:00:52. > :01:02.Canon Chris Froome emulate Bradley Wiggins and turn bronze from four
:01:03. > :01:17.years ago into gold today? The first out of the box. Fabian Cancellara,
:01:18. > :01:23.one last shot at Olympic glory. He just makes it look effortless,
:01:24. > :01:28.doesn't he? Work to do, 20 seconds slower than Fabian Cancellara. A
:01:29. > :01:33.masterclass from one of the greats of the sport. He could become the
:01:34. > :01:42.Olympic champion for the second time in his career. Into the silver medal
:01:43. > :01:49.position, Tom Dumoulin. Chris Froome pulled it out at the end, he really
:01:50. > :01:52.dug deep. Sprinting to the line. The winner of the Tour de France hung
:01:53. > :01:59.onto his form to make sure he could get an Olympic medal. We all love
:02:00. > :02:04.Rio, but it feels a bit like London today. It is a doubt, great, drizzly
:02:05. > :02:11.day, but that did not stop them going all out in the time trial. We
:02:12. > :02:15.will reflect on Chris Froome's medal with Chris Boardman. Have you known
:02:16. > :02:20.the time trial as tough as that in terms of conditions on the road?
:02:21. > :02:24.Certainly a bit of everything. There was rain and when you put technical
:02:25. > :02:28.descent on a course like that with the rain it gets pretty hard
:02:29. > :02:33.watching them coming down. How impressed are you with the way Chris
:02:34. > :02:37.Froome made up time later on to snatch a medal? We all wanted him to
:02:38. > :02:43.win the Olympic time trial. It was too much to ask. He has only had a
:02:44. > :02:47.couple of weeks. I think a bronze medal was an excellent performance
:02:48. > :02:51.and he fought hard for it and paste the ride well to come back at the
:02:52. > :02:56.end. Let's hear from Chris Froome. This is what he said.
:02:57. > :02:59.Congratulations, it has been a momentous few weeks for you and you
:03:00. > :03:05.bought every inch of the way to get onto the podium. I did, I cannot be
:03:06. > :03:10.disappointed with that. Of course, I would have loved to have been in
:03:11. > :03:15.with a chance for a gold medal, but I gave it everything I had today and
:03:16. > :03:20.I cannot be any happier than that. And you gave it everything, but the
:03:21. > :03:23.course suited the strongmen, the likes of Fabian Cancellara, who is
:03:24. > :03:30.so strong in the descent particularly. He was the clear
:03:31. > :03:36.winner today, more than a minute ahead of me. If I had lost by maybe
:03:37. > :03:42.five or six seconds, I would have been disappointed with myself, but
:03:43. > :03:50.he was clearly the strongest guy today. Yes, I don't know what else
:03:51. > :03:55.to say. I gave it everything I had and I tried to hold back a little
:03:56. > :04:00.bit for the last lap knowing how hard the chorus was. But I just did
:04:01. > :04:05.not have any more. You paste it well to get onto the podium, but if you
:04:06. > :04:08.look back at the year, your third Tour de France victory, a medal at
:04:09. > :04:13.the Olympic Games, you would have settled for that at the start of the
:04:14. > :04:18.season? It is an amazing feeling, the year I have had. The third to
:04:19. > :04:22.win and to come and medal for the second time in an Olympics is
:04:23. > :04:28.incredible, an incredible feeling. I just want to thank everyone who has
:04:29. > :04:32.been a part of this and most notably David Roseman who has been looking
:04:33. > :04:39.after me out here, my coat, and Team GB. You have done us proud as
:04:40. > :04:44.always. Enjoy the bronze medal. Thank you very much. Every time I
:04:45. > :04:49.see Chris Froome and hear him speak I think he is so quiet and gentle
:04:50. > :04:55.and polite. The kind of boy you would take home to meet your
:04:56. > :04:59.parents. And yet he has got that killer instinct. Like boxers when
:05:00. > :05:02.you get into competition that is when it all comes out. Incredibly
:05:03. > :05:04.consistent, and he has got that killer instinct. Like boxers when
:05:05. > :05:07.you get into competition that is when it all comes out. Incredibly
:05:08. > :05:12.consistent, and he hath that to be very aggressive to come out front.
:05:13. > :05:16.Today he had to dig deep, and it came out in the end. Fabian
:05:17. > :05:23.Cancellara seems to be in a league of his own. We hardly saw him in the
:05:24. > :05:27.race in the road race. He was climbing at the front with some of
:05:28. > :05:31.the best and we thought maybe there was a glimmer. You cannot write
:05:32. > :05:35.somebody off who has got a history like he has and he knows how to ride
:05:36. > :05:41.a course like that. He made up so much time on the descent. Wonderful
:05:42. > :05:47.shots, his second Olympic title, having won in Beijing. The Swiss
:05:48. > :05:52.will be thrilled with that. As for British cycling, we moved into our
:05:53. > :05:57.traditionally successful area, on the track, and cycling in the
:05:58. > :06:01.velodrome starts tomorrow. Bradley Wiggins is getting a lot of
:06:02. > :06:06.attention. Is there a fallout between him and Mark Cavendish? I
:06:07. > :06:10.have heard that, but that is part of what they do, they are always
:06:11. > :06:15.squabbling like a married couple. They probably did and it is a normal
:06:16. > :06:18.way they do things. Mark Cavendish came early because he thought he
:06:19. > :06:26.would get a shot at the team pursuit, but that is not happening
:06:27. > :06:33.now. No, it is such a specialist pursuit. He will focus on the
:06:34. > :06:41.Armenian. -- omnium. We have got Laura Trott and Becky James. As an
:06:42. > :06:45.overall prediction, how many gold medals are you thinking? We only
:06:46. > :06:51.deal in golds. I said two years ago that I thought three gold medals,
:06:52. > :06:55.four if they do exceptionally well, and that was including the road
:06:56. > :06:59.events. But having watched how they have developed on the track I would
:07:00. > :07:04.say that is still about right. And the time trial in the women's race,
:07:05. > :07:09.Emma Pooley finished 14th. Were you disappointed in that or was it as
:07:10. > :07:14.good as she could do? Having said that, when I looked at the cause it
:07:15. > :07:18.was not what I expected. The climb was really short, only 15 minutes of
:07:19. > :07:24.the entire race and there was an awful lot of nontechnical flat
:07:25. > :07:32.roads, so it is not her cause, so not surprising. And in terms of the
:07:33. > :07:36.winner, a wonderful story. To have retired twice, had a family and come
:07:37. > :07:43.back and to still be able to do this is quite remarkable. It shows what
:07:44. > :07:48.an athlete she is. She was a pure time trialist and she enjoyed the
:07:49. > :07:56.hills and the flat roads. 42 years old, is that right? 41 or 42. There
:07:57. > :08:05.is hope for us all. Kristin Armstrong. We are turning our
:08:06. > :08:09.attention to judo were Great Britain one two medals in London. But it is
:08:10. > :08:15.a sport in which we have never won a gold medal. Sally Conway is going
:08:16. > :08:20.really well. Could there be a chance for us today? She already has three
:08:21. > :08:28.ippons to her name. This is her knocking out the world champion from
:08:29. > :08:32.France and that took her into a quarterfinal. We are going to see
:08:33. > :08:39.the best of that with commentary from Ollie Williams.
:08:40. > :08:47.This is already an improvement from London 2012. She will feel she can
:08:48. > :08:57.go forward having beaten the world champion in the second round.
:08:58. > :09:06.Bolder is searching for that grip around Sally Conway's neck.
:09:07. > :09:18.Sally Conway has the pain. The clock is ticking off and an ippon has been
:09:19. > :09:26.awarded to Sally Conway. An Olympic semifinal awaits Britain's Sally
:09:27. > :09:32.Conway. A third ippon in a row. Daylight etched on her face, the
:09:33. > :09:36.29-year-old. She came here with a world ranking of number ten and she
:09:37. > :09:44.is punching well above that already, into the final four. Sally Conway
:09:45. > :09:49.that Rio 2016. And three ippons in a row is the
:09:50. > :09:53.equivalent of three knockouts in a row and it has been stunning for
:09:54. > :10:01.Sally Conway. We will see if she can get herself into the gold medal
:10:02. > :10:05.fight, match, bout. We will do our best to be with that as soon as we
:10:06. > :10:12.can. This is what is coming up this evening.
:10:13. > :10:20.We will be kayaking with Joe Clarke, one of the sport's new faces. His
:10:21. > :10:28.hero growing up was Sir Steve Redgrave who signed photo for him
:10:29. > :10:32.when he was kid. We will be heading to the diving pool to see if it is
:10:33. > :10:40.still green for the men's three metres incredible. Jack locker and
:10:41. > :10:44.Chris Mears won bronze at the World Championships. They have got a new
:10:45. > :10:56.dive in their repertoire. They say it is world changing. Britain's
:10:57. > :11:02.Sally Conway is in the medal mix in judo. If she wins her next bout, she
:11:03. > :11:14.will be guaranteed at least a silver medal. In gymnastics today it is the
:11:15. > :11:22.men's all-around competition, Max Whitlock is in this. The favourite
:11:23. > :11:30.is Carly Fujimori of Japan. That is the scene across to Sugarloaf
:11:31. > :11:40.Mountain. It could be any time after 8pm for Sally Conway. Judo can ask
:11:41. > :11:44.either ten seconds or ten minutes. On BBC Four Stephen Scott is into
:11:45. > :11:53.the semifinals of the double trap shooting. That is live on BBC Four.
:11:54. > :12:00.He won gold in that at London. You can access up to 24 streams live and
:12:01. > :12:06.online and on the BBC sport app. There is the BBC Red Button as well.
:12:07. > :12:15.Lots of ways to follow the Olympics. Here are the headlines on day five.
:12:16. > :12:21.In Rugby sevens Great Britain booked their spot in the knockout stages by
:12:22. > :12:28.beating the powerhouse of New Zealand. They will face Argentina in
:12:29. > :12:32.the quarterfinals. The boxing has not been going so well and
:12:33. > :12:39.bantamweight Qais Ashfaq lost his opening bout to Thailand's Chatchai
:12:40. > :12:47.Butdee. He was the fifth boxer eliminated today. And we had a
:12:48. > :12:52.strong storm this morning with wind and rain as well and it meant that
:12:53. > :12:59.the rowing was a casualty. The entire schedule was cancelled for
:13:00. > :13:05.the day due to the weather. But in hockey they can certainly play on in
:13:06. > :13:08.the rain and Great Britain's women continued their 100% record at Rio
:13:09. > :13:19.by beating the 2012 silver medallists Argentina 3-2. They have
:13:20. > :13:24.now won three out of three. Let's have a look at the medals table at
:13:25. > :13:30.this stage. The United States are out in front, Michael Phelps
:13:31. > :13:38.contributing hugely to that. Great Britain had two medals from the
:13:39. > :13:40.swimming pool last night. Just one goal so far for Adam Peaty. Seven
:13:41. > :13:50.medals in total. We are going to head off to
:13:51. > :13:57.whitewater kayaking. David Florence was disappointed yesterday. But with
:13:58. > :14:03.kayaking they sit in the boat rather than kneeling in it. Either
:14:04. > :14:07.conditions all right for kayaking and what can you tell us about Joe
:14:08. > :14:12.Clarke? Of all the sport that you can do in the rain slalom canoe is
:14:13. > :14:17.high on the list where they would not care if it was raining or not.
:14:18. > :14:23.Water will be flying all over the place for this final. We are excited
:14:24. > :14:28.about the prospects for Joe Clarke. He qualified third fastest from the
:14:29. > :14:33.semifinal. But all those times get swept away and it is just the
:14:34. > :14:36.running order. He will go eight out of the ten finalists we are about to
:14:37. > :14:42.see now and we are very excited about his prospects. He is ranked in
:14:43. > :14:48.the top ten in the world, what else can you tell us about him? It is his
:14:49. > :14:54.first Olympics and like any Olympian he has been training for many years
:14:55. > :14:58.for this moment. He is very calm and calculated, but he is also
:14:59. > :15:04.incredibly keen. I hope the pressure does not get to him. I have no
:15:05. > :15:08.reason to believe it would. But slalom canoe can turn in an instant
:15:09. > :15:13.in a good way, and as we saw yesterday in a bad way. Your chances
:15:14. > :15:19.can go very quickly wrong. If you hit a gate, that is a two second
:15:20. > :15:25.penalty. If you miss a gate completely, that is the 52nd
:15:26. > :15:30.penalty. Even a two second penalty at this level means your medal
:15:31. > :15:36.chance is gone. In terms of his qualification in the semifinal, how
:15:37. > :15:42.fast was he? He was very close. He was within a second or two of the
:15:43. > :15:49.leader. 1.83 behind the quickest. It is a nice thing to have a clean run,
:15:50. > :15:54.which aid of the qualifiers did. All those times are swept away, so it is
:15:55. > :15:58.just the ranking, just the running order that that set up. It all
:15:59. > :16:02.starts again and his Olympics will be decided in 100 seconds when he
:16:03. > :16:07.comes down this course in a few minutes' time.
:16:08. > :16:13.As you can see, the Brazilian fans are very excited about this. Let us
:16:14. > :16:19.join the commentators, Patrick Winterton and Helen Reeves.
:16:20. > :16:25.Thank you, the final under way, the last few men in the K1 competition
:16:26. > :16:30.and it is De Silva of Brazil who will light the crowd up. They have
:16:31. > :16:33.been so enthusiastic about their performances. The run for the
:16:34. > :16:38.semifinal counts for nothing now, it is all about this last run and this
:16:39. > :16:42.man knows the course better than anyone, Helen. He is looking very
:16:43. > :16:48.good at the moment, looking faster than he did on his first run. Tight
:16:49. > :16:53.around his upstream. A bit sticky on the exit, two strokes to get out.
:16:54. > :16:58.This is the key, you have to keep the boat downstream, a bit of tail
:16:59. > :17:04.action, the reverse stroke. It won't be as quick as some of the runs we
:17:05. > :17:09.saw in the semifinal. We saw one penalty on 18 in the first run but
:17:10. > :17:14.Pedro Da Silva is safely through. Now the upstream to 19, requires a
:17:15. > :17:19.spin before he gets onto the wave. Not as clean as he was in the first
:17:20. > :17:31.round. Pedro Da Silva, who is without a doubt Brazil's best slalom
:17:32. > :17:39.Adler. -- paddler. Through 22, 78 is the time, we saw times around 76,
:17:40. > :17:44.77, so it is not bad at all, a very respectable mark. No penalties at
:17:45. > :17:50.all. 91.54, we will see just how good that is, but we should tell you
:17:51. > :17:54.the winning time in the semifinal, 88.84, but it is not unusual for the
:17:55. > :18:02.winning time in the semifinal to be quicker than the best in the final.
:18:03. > :18:05.Absolutely, it is a tricky course and the paddlers have to come out
:18:06. > :18:09.and replicate what they did on the first run, it is very tricky. Pepe
:18:10. > :18:15.will be very happy with that. Really clean, a really good target to set.
:18:16. > :18:20.As you watch the Slo Mo who macro of Pedro Da Silva, talking of the
:18:21. > :18:25.options for Joe Clarke, we have four competitions here with British boats
:18:26. > :18:29.in each of the semifinals. The more often you make the final, the better
:18:30. > :18:32.the chances of coming away with a medal eventually. Everyone knows
:18:33. > :18:37.there is a lot of good fortune and bad fortune in this game. The other
:18:38. > :18:42.thing is that the Joe Clarke, we are hearing, was under strict orders to
:18:43. > :18:45.hold back. Yes, he certainly was. I think it is all about playing the
:18:46. > :18:52.game, he needs to get into the final and he did it very well. This will
:18:53. > :18:56.be interesting, Italy's Giovanni De Gennaro, the fastest in the heats
:18:57. > :19:05.three days ago. It did not go his way in the semifinal, but he
:19:06. > :19:09.incurred a two second penalty on 18, which really shouldn't produce
:19:10. > :19:15.problems for a man of his quality. Once again, we will use Gate seven
:19:16. > :19:21.as an indicator of how he starts. He wants to be around 21 seconds to set
:19:22. > :19:25.a realistic target. Pointing left and right to keep it pointing
:19:26. > :19:31.downstream whenever you can. This is Gate seven and it is good. Yes, he
:19:32. > :19:35.is looking sharp. Going for the spin, that is what he chose to do.
:19:36. > :19:43.Not the quickest of moves, you don't want to spend too much time going
:19:44. > :19:47.backwards. Interesting decision to have done that. Obviously slightly
:19:48. > :19:52.unnerved. He whips the tail down, uses the stern of the boat, not sure
:19:53. > :19:57.it was that intentional. Now he needs to settle into the run, using
:19:58. > :20:02.unnecessary energy of that sequence -- in that sequence of seven, eight
:20:03. > :20:09.and nine. Back into the flow again. He is going to be looking to set up
:20:10. > :20:15.the spin, he is losing more time. Not great speed from the exit at 19.
:20:16. > :20:20.Now it is a drive, he wants as clean a line as possible coming out of the
:20:21. > :20:25.downstream. Through 21 and now we want to see him turn, on the spot
:20:26. > :20:33.but keep the momentum on the exit. A tough line, having to pick up to get
:20:34. > :20:41.the speed and momentum. The first time set by Pedro Da Silva. Will
:20:42. > :20:47.Brazil stay top? Just outside, so close between the first two. The
:20:48. > :20:52.fact that he hasn't beaten Pedro Da Silva obviously upsetting him. He
:20:53. > :20:56.came here for gold and it is not going to happen. Italians took the
:20:57. > :21:06.gold in 2012, he is bitterly disappointed but I am not sure this
:21:07. > :21:12.is a course for the powerhouse paddler. You have to work with water
:21:13. > :21:17.and he made some bizarre choices. The tail going down at 13, trying to
:21:18. > :21:20.use power and I think it is not the right move. You have to use the
:21:21. > :21:27.water, usual technical skills, rather than brute force. 13, the
:21:28. > :21:32.gate that gave Ben Florence trouble yesterday as well and it just seems
:21:33. > :21:36.the harder you try on that date, the harder it becomes. You have do flow,
:21:37. > :21:41.this is all about a fluent run and De Gennaro hasn't managed it. Still
:21:42. > :21:45.in second position but we have another eight paddlers to come. Just
:21:46. > :21:48.a reminder, Joe Clarke, after a tremendous first run in the
:21:49. > :22:06.semifinals, will be number eight on the start sheet. And then just purse
:22:07. > :22:14.converge and Smolen after him. Sebastien Combot now, after taking
:22:15. > :22:20.gold in the men's see one. The French are one of the top nations.
:22:21. > :22:26.We want to see the canoe darting on top of the water, direct lines. Like
:22:27. > :22:32.you can draw with a ruler between the gates. The wind has picked up a
:22:33. > :22:38.little bit, just tacking through, it was quite straight but down on that
:22:39. > :22:43.spit. He is really going to have to pick up, take the tight lines around
:22:44. > :22:49.the upper streams. Pedro Da Silva made no mistakes on the course. Keep
:22:50. > :22:54.an eye out for the next splitter. If he remains behind, it will be very
:22:55. > :23:00.encouraging for the Brazilian fans. Combot should be capable of taking
:23:01. > :23:05.the lead. 17, goes for a big punt off the wall. That seems to be
:23:06. > :23:12.affected, but 19 - 20 is a tricky section.
:23:13. > :23:15.CLARE BALDING: will we leave the K1 briefly because here is Steven Scott
:23:16. > :23:54.shooting for a bronze medal in the double trap.
:23:55. > :24:01.Pull!. This is an all British class for the bronze medal, Steven Scott
:24:02. > :24:05.against Tim Kneale. And Richard Drew is the commentator. As you can see,
:24:06. > :24:16.Tim Kneale against Steven Scott. The pressure back on Scott. It is
:24:17. > :24:24.not sudden death but you want to go toe to toe with your a opponents.
:24:25. > :24:28.Scott the 2004 Commonwealth and European champion, got a world
:24:29. > :24:34.championship bronze as well. One World Cup final in 2015. So he has
:24:35. > :24:42.been in a good vein of form. Six apiece. After the first section.
:24:43. > :24:54.Pull! The light getting just a little bit better here.
:24:55. > :25:03.If nothing else, the two British shooters are used to touch of rain
:25:04. > :25:08.and a bit of breeze. Tim Kneale shoots at the North Hamstead
:25:09. > :25:14.shooting club in Hartford. And there is the first miss. The second one
:25:15. > :25:23.off to the left. And an opportunity for Steven Scott. Perhaps a bit more
:25:24. > :25:25.relaxed than they might be, the British contingent, knowing that
:25:26. > :25:32.somebody will get a medal for Great Britain. Kevin Hill, the national
:25:33. > :25:36.coach, will be satisfied with a job well done.
:25:37. > :25:54.Second bronze for the shotgun events for Great Britain after the trap. --
:25:55. > :25:57.Ed Ling in the trap. Tim Kneale has a slight disadvantage here, trailing
:25:58. > :26:16.11-12. This competition in the future of
:26:17. > :26:21.the Olympics is in doubt. The IAAF pondering whether to have a mixed
:26:22. > :26:25.skeet trap competition instead. I know the double trap shooters have
:26:26. > :26:34.been passionate about this sport and keeping it here at the Olympics.
:26:35. > :26:43.And he has recovered well from that one miss, Steven Scott. It is down
:26:44. > :26:45.to him, if he keeps shooting perfectly, he will take the bronze
:26:46. > :27:01.medal. This is the man who works in
:27:02. > :27:08.Langport, in Somerset. Very much and Isle of Man person. Another miss
:27:09. > :27:13.there, so two shot dropped for Tim Kneale. And Steven Scott is looking
:27:14. > :27:17.very strong at the moment, a two shot advantage, 18-16. Nine out of
:27:18. > :27:31.15 double shot now. So six doubles left, it could all
:27:32. > :27:32.still turn around here. This man has to keep concentrating and you can
:27:33. > :27:45.just see the focus on the athlete. Still that two shot advantage, those
:27:46. > :28:04.two misses from Tim Kneale. Nasty riser through the middle
:28:05. > :28:09.there, but did well to sort it out. Just a hand going up there from
:28:10. > :28:13.Steven Scott. They have not many seconds to get the shot away. Just
:28:14. > :28:27.wanted to sort himself out there, let the referee no. -- know. Hasn't
:28:28. > :28:29.affected his concentration, 22-20. Tim Kneale just has to keep hitting
:28:30. > :28:47.the doubles and hope for the best. He has hit the last three doubles,
:28:48. > :28:51.he is back in the groove, this man so far hasn't missed and carries on,
:28:52. > :29:00.24 out of 24. Three more doubles to go and Steve Scott is very, very
:29:01. > :29:05.close to taking this bronze medal. There is still time for this to
:29:06. > :29:11.change around, you know. He won't be taking anything for granted. Just
:29:12. > :29:12.look how gloomy the weather is. It has been a really wet and damp day
:29:13. > :29:24.in Rio today, very wintry. Nice from Tim Kneale, that is the
:29:25. > :29:29.fourth double in a row that he has nailed, but it is all in Steven
:29:30. > :29:35.Scott's hands. And he edges closer to this bronze medal. Four more
:29:36. > :29:44.shops, two doubles, for these athletes. -- shots. Unless something
:29:45. > :29:48.happens, which we will then go to shoot off. Tim Kneale is keeping
:29:49. > :29:55.going, hoping for a wobble from this man. Looking good, though. And just
:29:56. > :29:59.needs to nailed the next two. Tim Kneale knows that if he misses one
:30:00. > :30:09.of these, then he misses out on the bronze medal. Last pair, then. Last
:30:10. > :30:16.44 Tim Kneale of Great Britain. -- last pair four. And he nails them
:30:17. > :30:23.but one out of two will do it for Steven Scott. And he gets a perfect
:30:24. > :30:28.30 in this bronze model match -- bronze medal match. And Steven
:30:29. > :30:34.Scott, the 31-year-old world ranked at Number Ten, takes the bronze
:30:35. > :30:42.medal in a double trap competition. It feels good, I am sure it does.
:30:43. > :30:47.And look at the relief. Not quite sure, was that a lucky cartridge he
:30:48. > :30:52.had in his pocket? It has worked for him. You have to feel for Tim
:30:53. > :30:54.Kneale, so, so far along the line but couldn't quite convert it into a
:30:55. > :31:07.medal. the British coach is congratulating
:31:08. > :31:17.his two charges. This is the moment. Look at that smile.
:31:18. > :31:21.That is the second bronze medal for shooters at the Olympics. He is a
:31:22. > :31:27.friend of Peter Wilson who won gold medal in the trap in London. But we
:31:28. > :31:38.are heading back to the K-1 because Joe Clarke is very shortly to go in
:31:39. > :31:46.this final. Let's rejoin Patrick Winterton and Helen Reeves. Mike
:31:47. > :31:53.Dawson has produced very fast time indeed. The leader is Hannes Aigner
:31:54. > :32:04.of Germany. Dawson will be followed by Peter Kauzer and then it is Joe
:32:05. > :32:16.Clarke. Then after him it is Jiri Prskavec and Jakub Grigar. He is
:32:17. > :32:21.1.68 behind. It is not over, that Hannes Aigner was better than anyone
:32:22. > :32:26.we have seen so far. He certainly was, he has this power to drive
:32:27. > :32:36.through the last part. We are going to see a big spin and now is the
:32:37. > :32:42.power to accelerate the boat. He is a second and a half, if not 2.5
:32:43. > :32:48.seconds behind Hannes Aigner. It is a painful lactose inducing drives.
:32:49. > :32:54.That shows you how good the German was on his run. That puts Dawson in
:32:55. > :33:02.sixth position, having been up going through gates 13 and 14. Yes, he had
:33:03. > :33:08.to work very hard across the river from 16 into 17, but above that he
:33:09. > :33:12.was superb. He did not nail that section. Leading into the bottom
:33:13. > :33:19.section he did not get the lines that Hannes Aigner got. Can anybody
:33:20. > :33:24.match them? And that real brute power out of the last gate and into
:33:25. > :33:29.the finish. We may have already seen the gold medal performance, but we
:33:30. > :33:33.do not know because we have got four kayakers to go. Peter Kauzer is
:33:34. > :33:55.waiting to go, for Slovenia. Now, this is Peter Kauzer's chance.
:33:56. > :34:05.From Slovenia, a huge paddling nation. The world champion from
:34:06. > :34:12.2011. Finished fourth in the World Championships last year. It was only
:34:13. > :34:21.0.7 of the second of the time for a bronze medal. He knows he is capable
:34:22. > :34:31.of meddling here. But has got to be careful throughout. That is a better
:34:32. > :34:37.start from him. He lost time in the semifinals upstream. But gate seven
:34:38. > :34:45.is nailed. Hannes Aigner was quick through gate seven. But this is
:34:46. > :34:54.looking sharp from Peter Kauzer. A little knock on the tail in 13, but
:34:55. > :35:00.he is back out in the flow. Nice and straight showing a smooth style.
:35:01. > :35:07.Patient and then out of the upstream gate. 26 years of paddling
:35:08. > :35:13.experience. He is only 32 and he has still got the green light. He has
:35:14. > :35:15.got to be good, he has got to do something special on this lower
:35:16. > :35:26.section because Hannes Aigner was sensational. He drops just a
:35:27. > :35:32.fraction too low and that could be half a second gone and now he has to
:35:33. > :35:42.produce the best of his life. Going for gold at Diadora. He has made it!
:35:43. > :35:45.One third of a second on each of the splits all the way down and Hannes
:35:46. > :35:52.Aigner has been pushed down into a silver medal position. Pedro De
:35:53. > :35:57.Silva is pushed down into third. Joe Clarke is next. I hope he has not
:35:58. > :36:07.been watching because he will be a bag of nerves. What are the
:36:08. > :36:12.preparations like? You are pumping yourself up and just getting ready.
:36:13. > :36:16.You know when the bars in the stadium gets like this it is because
:36:17. > :36:24.it is getting exciting and that helps. But you have to stay in your
:36:25. > :36:29.own thoughts and execute your plan. That is how it should be done. Peter
:36:30. > :36:36.Kauzer withstanding the Olympic pressure. Is it going to be his day?
:36:37. > :36:45.He was the world champion five years ago. A fantastic run from him. He
:36:46. > :36:51.won the semifinal in 2012 and then completely flunked the final. Will
:36:52. > :36:56.it be the opposite this time around? Nothing he can do about it. He just
:36:57. > :37:05.has to sit and watch the last three paddlers. It would be sensational if
:37:06. > :37:10.he could crack that time of 88.7. In the semifinals he was under orders
:37:11. > :37:16.to hold back we believe. The 23-year-old from Stoke on Trent.
:37:17. > :37:20.Stafford Canoe club will be packed today watching his progress. He
:37:21. > :37:26.needs to be calm and settle into the rhythm early. He wants to keep his
:37:27. > :37:32.bow to tracking down stream. He has got a nice open style. Seven is
:37:33. > :37:44.tight and it is all about the line. Keep in control. This is sharp. It
:37:45. > :37:50.is sharper than sharp. This man has only been on the British senior team
:37:51. > :37:56.for four years. He nails number 13 and got the spin on the back. One
:37:57. > :38:04.selection for the Olympics back in October and he has had four months
:38:05. > :38:10.to prepare for this one run. He is clean and he is getting faster and
:38:11. > :38:15.faster as the run goes on, but that was very tight and he found himself
:38:16. > :38:24.broadside, but he gets across. Great power to keep himself online. A
:38:25. > :38:30.slight cold and stop on 19. A little reverse and a tight pull-out and
:38:31. > :38:36.that is looking good and fast. Two gates to go for Joe Clarke as he
:38:37. > :38:43.drives towards the line. The time of 88.7 could be beaten. Sensational!
:38:44. > :38:56.Joe Clarke has secured himself a medal. It is definitely going to be
:38:57. > :39:06.bronze. Jiri Prskavec and Jakub Grigar are still to come. Do not
:39:07. > :39:12.celebrate yet. But give Joe Clarke credit, 23 years old, he has pulled
:39:13. > :39:19.out the run of his life on the race of his life. Absolutely. In the
:39:20. > :39:26.semifinal he showed maturity. Then he build on it just there. Amazing,
:39:27. > :39:34.the pressure was high. He had to make 19 work, it was a quick spin.
:39:35. > :39:39.It was superb. It was really great. They are all building on their runs.
:39:40. > :39:48.What a wonderful final this is turning out to be. On 19 he spun a
:39:49. > :39:56.bit too early, but it did not stop him. It turned out to his advantage.
:39:57. > :40:00.Joe Clarke has pulled out a storm. Nice to see all the paddlers coming
:40:01. > :40:07.through to congratulate him. Bad news for Brazil who are out of the
:40:08. > :40:12.medals. Do not move for six and a half, seven minutes. Jiri Prskavec
:40:13. > :40:18.from the Czech Republic is on his way. The split has to be good all
:40:19. > :40:22.the way down. Very little opportunity to make up if you are
:40:23. > :40:31.half seconds down on the first split. This is the first tricky
:40:32. > :40:38.upstream gate. A quick turn and out into the flow. This is where Joe
:40:39. > :40:47.Clarke was good, eight, nine and ten. But this is lightning quick.
:40:48. > :40:55.And a touch. That could be so expensive. We have only got 0.49 of
:40:56. > :41:01.a second between gold, silver and bronze and to add two seconds, that
:41:02. > :41:07.can be damaging for your hopes. Jiri Prskavec is pushing extra hard at
:41:08. > :41:14.the moment. He is still in touch with the medals, so he will have to
:41:15. > :41:16.nailed this bottom section. But you have to bear in mind, having been
:41:17. > :41:40.given to second company. He is outside and that little
:41:41. > :41:47.mistake between 22 and 23 cost him the gold, but he is into bronze
:41:48. > :41:58.medal. Peter Kauzer is sitting in silver at the moment. The quickest
:41:59. > :42:04.run we have seen from anyone by far from Jiri Prskavec, but it does not
:42:05. > :42:09.matter because the penalties count. They are having to push these lines,
:42:10. > :42:14.there is no option. They have to make sure they do not give away
:42:15. > :42:21.anything at all. He was really going for it and he worked really hard
:42:22. > :42:24.because things were not ideal. Ever since the Junior World Championships
:42:25. > :42:30.when he took the run conservatively and it all went horribly wrong, he
:42:31. > :42:36.is a man who goes 100%. That he has to sit and wait. This will be the
:42:37. > :42:48.longest three minutes of his life. Jakub Grigar could deny him a medal.
:42:49. > :42:58.If Jakub Grigar produces a run quicker than 88.9, the Slovakian
:42:59. > :43:05.will be on the podium and the Czech Slovakian will miss out.
:43:06. > :43:18.Here we go. Jakub Grigar of Slovakia. He is only 19 years of
:43:19. > :43:25.age. Surely the pressure could be too much? Joe Clarke is sitting in
:43:26. > :43:30.gold medal position. He will be having his fingers crossed, not that
:43:31. > :43:41.it goes wrong, but that it does not go brilliantly well for Jakub
:43:42. > :43:46.Grigar. Very quick. He threw his head inside seven and eight, taking
:43:47. > :43:53.all the risks in the world. He got a bit too far into the wave and was
:43:54. > :43:56.held for a fraction of a second. Fractions are separating the top
:43:57. > :44:02.four at the moment. I cannot remember a time it has been that
:44:03. > :44:09.close. He nailed 17 and it is all about the spin. A little bit slow on
:44:10. > :44:19.the hold across and held in the wave. Wide at 20. This is going to
:44:20. > :44:26.be extremely tight. Watch the time on 22, he has to be well under 77
:44:27. > :44:30.seconds. This is going to be desperately close. He needs a
:44:31. > :44:41.perfect line into the finish. That could be the move that costs him.
:44:42. > :44:47.And it is Joe Clarke of Great Britain, the 23-year-old, who is the
:44:48. > :44:54.Olympic champion for 2016. Helen, you were saying yesterday if the
:44:55. > :45:01.youngest one in the British team were to get a gold medal. That is
:45:02. > :45:07.security for the future of men's paddling. It is such a tight
:45:08. > :45:11.discipline. We have had some very good juniors. But for him to come
:45:12. > :45:17.out today on the biggest platform in the world and to perform that way is
:45:18. > :45:24.phenomenal. He should be so proud of himself. His coach Mark Ratcliffe,
:45:25. > :45:30.they have worked very hard. Weeks of work have come to fruition. A
:45:31. > :45:35.fantastic performance. Congratulations to Peter Kauzer and
:45:36. > :45:41.Jiri Prskavec who have taken the silver and a bronze medal. But the
:45:42. > :45:46.news stories will all be about Joe Clarke. Three days ago, in his first
:45:47. > :45:52.run in the heat, he picks up a 50 and we said this would be the test
:45:53. > :45:58.of the man. His semifinal run particularly was so mature.
:45:59. > :46:04.Absolutely, he was under orders to hold back and that is what he did,
:46:05. > :46:08.he made it happen. It is difficult to say, keep control of your nerves,
:46:09. > :46:13.it is one part of the game. This is where it can sound where it mattered
:46:14. > :46:16.and he did it, he delivered and that shows incredible maturity and
:46:17. > :46:26.incredible slalom skills. What a talented Pat Lam. Wonderful moments
:46:27. > :46:32.for Joe Clarke -- talented Pat Lam. That is just run down the order of
:46:33. > :46:42.the sheet. Can't see any problem with the top three. Cazeaux was the
:46:43. > :46:49.quickest man on the water and will live and sleep with the penalties --
:46:50. > :46:55.Peter Kauzer. Grigar has finished down in that position. Once again,
:46:56. > :46:58.the curse of winning the semifinal. There are the results and yes, Joe
:46:59. > :47:06.Clarke Great Britain is the new Olympic champion in K1. He has done
:47:07. > :47:18.it here at Diadora, Peter Kauzer in silver, Jiri Perce Gurevich in
:47:19. > :47:24.bronze. Look outside it is -- Perce Quebec. In Boulder macro Great
:47:25. > :47:33.Britain has their second Olympic champion of Rio 2016. -- CLARE
:47:34. > :47:39.BALDING: think I it is fair to say, Matthew Pinsent, that that is not a
:47:40. > :47:42.gold medal but had been anticipated, because he didn't make the final of
:47:43. > :47:47.the World Championships. No, he has been on the team for four
:47:48. > :47:53.years, his results have been steady but undramatic, you could say, so to
:47:54. > :47:55.become Olympic champion of the back-up that and beat some of the
:47:56. > :48:00.names he has just beaten is an extraordinary achievement and a huge
:48:01. > :48:03.tribute to him. Everyone who has seen that for the first time will
:48:04. > :48:07.see how tense that is, even to watch, so you can imagine the
:48:08. > :48:11.feeling that is rushing through your brain while you are sitting at the
:48:12. > :48:18.top, trying to compress four years of training in 280 or 90 seconds of
:48:19. > :48:22.action and the incredibly powerful and incredibly precise at the same
:48:23. > :48:27.time, because as soon as it begins to unravel, it is gone, your medal
:48:28. > :48:31.chance will disappear very quickly, and Joe has eyes in his veins.
:48:32. > :48:38.Absolutely superb final run. -- has ice. I know you were excited
:48:39. > :48:42.watching that. It is wonderful to be there to witness these moments. It
:48:43. > :48:46.is great and what is so tense, of course, is that you know even with
:48:47. > :48:52.him putting in that time, there were two fantastic paddlers to come after
:48:53. > :48:57.him so in the nicest possible way, you are hoping everyone can do well
:48:58. > :49:01.in the competition but also, as a Brit, you want Joe to do well and as
:49:02. > :49:06.soon as he crossed the line first with two paddlers left, it was
:49:07. > :49:13.obvious he had won a medal and of course, elevated Da Silva and then
:49:14. > :49:16.Olympic champion in the last few seconds of Olympic action was
:49:17. > :49:21.brilliant. And you know, because you have been part of these teams, the
:49:22. > :49:24.effect it has when your team-mates win medals. That is Britain's third
:49:25. > :49:29.medal today but when it get back to the camp that there is another
:49:30. > :49:33.Olympic champion, it gives everyone a lift. There will be a notice board
:49:34. > :49:39.in the Team GB headquarters, at the bottom of that block in the village.
:49:40. > :49:45.We have a great big area, whiteboard, and people's names will
:49:46. > :49:48.go up when they win their medals, so it will be someone's job who will be
:49:49. > :49:52.running over now and putting Joe Clarke in the gold column and it
:49:53. > :49:56.will be a huge fillip to the team. We are doing fine but there are some
:49:57. > :50:00.mutterings about not doing as well as we thought, some painful fourth
:50:01. > :50:04.places in the last few days, we have all felt those, but to do that is
:50:05. > :50:07.absolutely fantastic. I keep looking behind in case the new Olympic
:50:08. > :50:12.champion from Great Britain Joe Clarke is with us. He is not yet,
:50:13. > :50:16.the protocol is he will go and get his medal and we will get to talk to
:50:17. > :50:21.him after he gets his medal on. We can't wait to hear from him, it is a
:50:22. > :50:26.fantastic story you have brought us, live coverage of the men's K1, Joe
:50:27. > :50:31.Clarke winning a gold medal for Great Britain and that was 15
:50:32. > :50:35.minutes after Steven Scott took bronze in the double trap shooting.
:50:36. > :50:40.It was an all British affair, he was up against Tim Kneale and it was
:50:41. > :50:47.perfect shooting from Steve Scott. And that was his response. He is a
:50:48. > :50:51.very good friend of Peter Wilson, who won the gold medal in this event
:50:52. > :51:01.in London 2012 and they are coached by the same man, Sheikh Maktoum of
:51:02. > :51:04.Dubai. And that is not a bad way to start our entertainment, in the
:51:05. > :51:09.space of 15 minutes, a bronze medal and a gold medal, both brought to
:51:10. > :51:12.you live on the BBC. We will switch our attention to gymnastics, and I
:51:13. > :51:17.will welcome Brynn Bevan, the youngest member of our team out
:51:18. > :51:21.here. Have some shelter from the rain. You are part of the team and
:51:22. > :51:25.the team did pretty well but now we move to the men's all-around
:51:26. > :51:30.competition, we have Max Whitlock and Nile Wilson. How are they this
:51:31. > :51:35.morning? Are they excited about this? They are both in a really
:51:36. > :51:38.positive mindset, both in a strong position and putting up high medal
:51:39. > :51:43.contention, so hopefully everything goes to plan, but gymnastics comes
:51:44. > :51:48.down to what happens on the day and anything can happen. Now, Nile
:51:49. > :51:55.Wilson qualified really well for this, he was fit. Yes, he was fit
:51:56. > :52:05.and Max was 12, so Nile Wilson art on the floor and Max on the pommel
:52:06. > :52:09.horse. -- will start. So they are feeling really pumped. What is the
:52:10. > :52:14.general atmosphere like among the gymnasts? It is a case of nearly,
:52:15. > :52:17.not quite so far in terms of medals. We are also proud of each other, we
:52:18. > :52:23.have gone out there and giving it our best shot. We did happen to have
:52:24. > :52:28.one mistake in the team final, but it was such a close final, such a
:52:29. > :52:33.high standard and we had to go or nothing, so Max and Lewis both
:52:34. > :52:37.decided to go for the highest value routines, which involves more risk
:52:38. > :52:42.but it could have paid off. But looking back at the scores, even if
:52:43. > :52:46.Lewis and Max had gone through a perfect routine, we wouldn't have
:52:47. > :52:53.got the bronze medal -- Louise and Max. They will be going head-to-head
:52:54. > :53:01.on Sunday. It is Sunday, the pommel and floor, so hopeful we will look
:53:02. > :53:07.at one and two for GB. The USA are way out in front in the women's and
:53:08. > :53:12.for the men, it is Japan and Kohei Uchimura. Is it certain that he will
:53:13. > :53:15.win a gold medal? I don't know if it is certain in the men's. The women,
:53:16. > :53:21.they are so fine front but in the men, they are close and there is not
:53:22. > :53:25.so much margin. I don't think Uchimura even qualified in first
:53:26. > :53:31.position, so there will be a fight for this gold medal. If I had to ask
:53:32. > :53:36.you to predict if Max or Nile could win a medal, what would you say? I
:53:37. > :53:40.think they are both in strong contention and from qualifications,
:53:41. > :53:47.Max has 88, 89 and he had a couple of mistakes, so he is looking at 91,
:53:48. > :53:50.possible gold medal. Nile had a very clean competition, a couple of
:53:51. > :53:54.errors and came away with 89 and he has repeated that score a lot this
:53:55. > :54:02.year. They are both in very strong contention, I wouldn't like to
:54:03. > :54:05.predicted but I wish the best of luck for both of them. I will let
:54:06. > :54:07.you head off to the Olympic Arena to enjoy and support them while we look
:54:08. > :54:10.at the medal table, because Great Britain have gone storming up. The
:54:11. > :54:14.last time we showed you, they were in 11th place and now they are in
:54:15. > :54:20.ninth, two gold medals. Thanks to Adam Peaty and Joe Clarke. Three
:54:21. > :54:26.silver medals and now four bronze medals, two of them coming today.
:54:27. > :54:31.And potentially more to come. So here is the timetable as it stands,
:54:32. > :54:36.and we are going to be going next to the men's 3m Synchro, that is Jack
:54:37. > :54:40.Laugher and Chris Meares going in that. We will also try and bring you
:54:41. > :54:47.live Sally Conway trying to get into the gold medal fight in the 70 K
:54:48. > :54:55.judo. And the gymnastics, we will be bringing you that at nine o'clock,
:54:56. > :54:59.the men's all-around, on BBC Four, I think that is live right now, so if
:55:00. > :55:08.you want to watch the very early stages, you can do so on that
:55:09. > :55:13.channel. In terms of the diving, already, we have seen a bronze medal
:55:14. > :55:18.come from Tom Daley and from Dan Goodfellow and their response when
:55:19. > :55:22.the scores came up and they realised they had finished third. This is Tom
:55:23. > :55:27.waiting and waiting. He realises, Dan is not quite so sure but he sees
:55:28. > :55:31.the number three and realises they have got the bronze medal and this
:55:32. > :55:36.was his reaction. He didn't intend to but he managed to bundle Dan
:55:37. > :55:43.strayed into the pool, which was blue two days ago. It turned a shade
:55:44. > :55:49.of green yesterday and is probably still green today. So it is a three
:55:50. > :55:51.metres springboard today and our two contenders are Jack Laugher and
:55:52. > :55:55.Chris Mears. Let's find out more about them.
:55:56. > :55:59.Yorkshire has become a real hotbed of diving talents recently. From
:56:00. > :56:04.this pool alone, five divers are going to represent Team GB in Rio
:56:05. > :56:15.and I have come to meet two of them who are set to be real medal
:56:16. > :56:21.prospects. OK, training over for the day, how was it? How are you
:56:22. > :56:27.feeling? It was really good. Are you a king? As always, pretty tired, but
:56:28. > :56:31.it is part of the crime. -- achy. And a scrambled egg lunch, which
:56:32. > :56:39.went down well. So let's head back to yours, see what the pad is like.
:56:40. > :56:46.See you later! Indicator! Brilliant. So this is the bachelor pad. Very
:56:47. > :56:49.nice, very swish. You train together, you come home to this
:56:50. > :56:54.together, you are always together. Does that not drive you mad
:56:55. > :57:00.sometimes? Not at all, me and Chris, we both have our individual rooms,
:57:01. > :57:06.obviously. You are not like Bert and Ernie! He has his musical his Xbox,
:57:07. > :57:12.we come back here, we cook together sometimes, sometimes I will cook, it
:57:13. > :57:16.is one of those things, we don't want to spend time together
:57:17. > :57:20.constantly. You guys are the next diving pin-ups, coming up behind Tom
:57:21. > :57:25.Daley, really. How do you feel about that? It is cool, what Tom did the
:57:26. > :57:30.diving is brilliant, he brought a lot of attention to it and I guess
:57:31. > :57:35.we kind of fed off that. Yes, it is really nice to have the attention
:57:36. > :57:38.from the media, diving being reported about and when me and Chris
:57:39. > :57:43.get stories out there of how well we are doing, we get that appreciation
:57:44. > :57:47.from the fans and stuff like that and people following diving, it
:57:48. > :57:53.feels really nice. Wow. They are meant to be all hung up. What is
:57:54. > :58:00.that? World Championships medal from last year. Cool boxes as well.
:58:01. > :58:03.Really cool. You have been through a lot together, not just in terms of
:58:04. > :58:09.diving but you came close to not surviving. Yes, it wasn't great. I
:58:10. > :58:13.basically was suffering from glandular fever but I didn't really
:58:14. > :58:17.know that that was a thing, I didn't really know what it was. The glands
:58:18. > :58:22.in my stomach swelled up to a really large size and put a lot of pressure
:58:23. > :58:31.on my organs and my spleen ruptured and blew up. So I had the operation
:58:32. > :58:35.in theatre, I was in Australia and my parents were pretty much told it
:58:36. > :58:40.might the endgame. Will you to be rooming together in Rio? We roomed
:58:41. > :58:46.together in every competition, no point in making an adjustment now. I
:58:47. > :58:50.am not sick of him yet. Spending time with Jack Laugher and
:58:51. > :58:56.Chris Mears and Jack Laugher was a star of the Commonwealth Games, he
:58:57. > :58:59.won two gold medals there and a silver medal and he and Chris have
:59:00. > :59:04.introduced a new dive into their repertoire and they say it could be
:59:05. > :59:09.world changing. That will have to come off perfectly and then they can
:59:10. > :59:14.contest for a major medal in this 3m Synchro. At some stage during the
:59:15. > :59:19.diving, we will try and get live to Sally Conway in the judo. Her
:59:20. > :59:24.semifinal. If she wins it, she would be into a gold medal fight. Let's
:59:25. > :59:27.and you over to the diving, it is very wet there, the pool is still
:59:28. > :59:42.green, Leon Taylor and Bob Ballard. Hello and welcome to the diving
:59:43. > :59:49.centre here in Rio. We are about to get under way with the men's 3m
:59:50. > :59:53.Synchro, the fourth of the synchronised diving events here at
:59:54. > :00:00.Rio 2016. We have seen the women go of three and ten. We saw Tom Daley
:00:01. > :00:04.and Dan Goodfellow get a bronze medal in their ten metres a few days
:00:05. > :00:09.ago. Hopes and expectations are high that we might just... We don't want
:00:10. > :00:13.to put anything around their necks just yet but we might just see Jack
:00:14. > :00:20.Laugher and Chris Mears emulate or even better what we saw from Tom and
:00:21. > :00:23.ban the other day. Alongside me as ever is 2004 Olympic silver
:00:24. > :00:28.medallist in the ten metre Synchro Leon Taylor. Before we get under
:00:29. > :00:33.way, have we got an update on the green pool? Everyone seems to be
:00:34. > :00:37.captivated by it. The update is that the pool is still very much green
:00:38. > :00:43.and the good news is the chemical levels in their are safe and the
:00:44. > :00:47.divers do not care. In fact, if anything, the green water makes it a
:00:48. > :00:51.little bit easier to spot when you are rotating around many, many
:00:52. > :00:55.times, which is exactly what we are going to see here this afternoon as
:00:56. > :01:02.our boys Jack and Chris take on the rest of the world. Top eight only,
:01:03. > :01:04.the qualification took place at last year's World Championships, where
:01:05. > :01:09.our boys won a bronze medal behind China and Russia. Both of those are
:01:10. > :01:14.in it today. Jack and Chris diving fifth and they will be putting the
:01:15. > :01:15.pressure firmly on the Russians, who directed follow them and the Chinese
:01:16. > :01:31.at that. I am sure that you will know by now
:01:32. > :01:44.that the first two Browns are all 2.0. All eight pairs are doing
:01:45. > :01:50.exactly the same died. -- the first two rounds. We start off with the
:01:51. > :01:56.Germans. Beautiful synchronisation from a relatively new German pair.
:01:57. > :02:01.They won the World Cup event in this very pool a few months ago back in
:02:02. > :02:05.February. They will be looking to emulate that here. Some of the best
:02:06. > :02:12.teams were not competing in that World Cup, opting to concentrate on
:02:13. > :02:19.the individual events. The Germans opening up with a fantastic dive. I
:02:20. > :02:27.will explain the scores, anything with a line through it does not
:02:28. > :02:37.count. They are multiplied by the 2.0 of difficulty to give the total
:02:38. > :02:51.mark. Anything 50 plus is very good indeed. Now the Mexicans. They did
:02:52. > :03:09.very well in Barcelona in the World Championships before last.
:03:10. > :03:20.Well, rain or no rain, green swimming pool or no green swimming
:03:21. > :03:23.pool, the divers will dive. In synchronisation it is looking to be
:03:24. > :03:30.a complete mirror image of each other. Any discrepancies and the
:03:31. > :03:34.judges will take marks away. A perfect ten means they were exactly
:03:35. > :03:42.in time from start to finish until they disappear into the water. The
:03:43. > :03:57.Mexican pair are pretty much like the German pair. I think we will see
:03:58. > :04:03.a .5 and nine. Almost identical. All the competitions have been like this
:04:04. > :04:07.so far, we go right down to the final dives until we know the full
:04:08. > :04:14.extent of where the medals are going to go to. We had torrential rain
:04:15. > :04:20.earlier on. It has eased off and it comes back in little bursts. But the
:04:21. > :04:34.divers will not care too much about it. In comes another relatively new
:04:35. > :04:41.American pairing. You will see the back dive from all eight pairs in
:04:42. > :04:46.the first round. Beautiful from the American pair. They are very new to
:04:47. > :04:53.this, winning the Olympic trials in fine fashion. Interesting that all
:04:54. > :05:02.diapers are opening with a back dive in the pike position. No matter what
:05:03. > :05:13.died you do in these opening two rounds, they are the required dives.
:05:14. > :05:31.-- dives. The Americans getting themselves into the mix. A high
:05:32. > :05:43.standard of competition so far. After the required dives they will
:05:44. > :05:44.go into the optional dives. Later on Jack and Chris will do the highest
:05:45. > :06:05.tariff dive. These are the Italians. Very nice,
:06:06. > :06:09.much better execution. There are six execution judges. Three on one side
:06:10. > :06:17.of the swimming pool and three on the other side. The ones on the
:06:18. > :06:25.fireside judge a diver closest to them and then vice versa. The
:06:26. > :06:31.remainder of the judges judge the synchronisation only. The left-hand
:06:32. > :06:35.side of the screen is execution and on the right-hand side it is
:06:36. > :06:42.synchronisation. The lines through the score do not count. Multiply
:06:43. > :06:48.that by the difficulty. Then you get the total score. It is much more
:06:49. > :06:59.straightforward in the individual. It is. Here come the Brits. They are
:07:00. > :07:05.going to go with the back dive with pike. The score to be at the moment
:07:06. > :07:22.is 52.8 zero. Beautifully composed, precise and
:07:23. > :07:29.bang on the money. Look at the support. Their families are out
:07:30. > :07:35.here, friends from all over are watching wherever they are in the
:07:36. > :07:41.world. This pair are gunning for a medal today. Nice and steady, not
:07:42. > :07:52.getting too excited. Keeping their composure and mailing the opening
:07:53. > :08:03.round. Still three pairs to go. The slow motion shows you just are
:08:04. > :08:08.synchronised it was. They join Germany and Italy at this stage. Do
:08:09. > :08:15.remind me to bring a waterproof pen the next time. I need one of those
:08:16. > :08:21.poncho is that the judges are wearing, which you will see when we
:08:22. > :08:25.move to the side shot. Everything I have written is dribbling down the
:08:26. > :08:34.page! Anyway, they are my problems and not yours. These have so often
:08:35. > :08:39.been the silver medallists. It has been interesting to watch both Jack
:08:40. > :08:49.and Chris next to this pair and they have been in the same training group
:08:50. > :08:53.will stop they have just been flexing their muscles every training
:08:54. > :08:58.session. Our boys would do a dive and then the Russians would match
:08:59. > :09:05.it. This is like for like. I think the battle for the medals will come
:09:06. > :09:09.from Russia, GB and China. That might be fractionally better than
:09:10. > :09:19.our boys. It is. But still really close. The optional dives are still
:09:20. > :09:23.to come. Do not panic, stay in your seats, this will be a
:09:24. > :09:28.roller-coaster. Marginally better than any of the others we have seen
:09:29. > :09:33.so far. We are talking about getting towards 400 for the winners. It is
:09:34. > :09:38.very much early stages. But these are the boys to beat. The Chinese
:09:39. > :09:40.have had a different combination over the years. But there has been
:09:41. > :10:00.one constant. I beautiful opening-round died from
:10:01. > :10:11.the Chinese pair. This will be really interesting because our boys
:10:12. > :10:17.get to build and build the pressure. CLARE BALDING: We are going back to
:10:18. > :10:23.the diving shortly, but let's take you live to the judo because Sally
:10:24. > :10:30.Conway on the right is about to fight her semifinal against Yuri
:10:31. > :10:35.Alvear of Colombia. She is having a sensational Olympics. She knocked
:10:36. > :10:42.out the world champion. She started judo aged ten, having chosen it over
:10:43. > :10:53.hockey. Kate Howey and Euan Burton have been very influential in her
:10:54. > :10:55.career so far. Judo has traditionally been very strong in
:10:56. > :11:03.Scotland which is where Sally Conway comes from. If she wins this, she is
:11:04. > :11:05.guaranteed at least a silver medal. Neal Adams is in the commentary box
:11:06. > :11:23.with Margie rant. She beat the world champion to get
:11:24. > :11:30.here and she beat her well. Turn from a hold down into a hold down.
:11:31. > :11:38.But with this she knows she has got her work cut out against the very
:11:39. > :11:44.strong Yuri Alvear. She is more like a boxer, she has got a completely
:11:45. > :11:47.different style. She has got great ground where, Sally Conway. She
:11:48. > :11:54.really has and that is where she is going to try and take Yuri Alvear.
:11:55. > :12:00.She knows that is her big chance. But Yuri Alvear is physically so
:12:01. > :12:09.strong. She has got unusual technique. She has a massive,
:12:10. > :12:25.winding throw which Sally Conway has got to stay away from. She can go
:12:26. > :12:29.left and right as well, Yuri Alvear. Sally Conway sacrifices and she has
:12:30. > :12:35.got to break balance when she does that. Yuri Alvear was also in
:12:36. > :12:41.Beijing and finished in the top seven. She tried volleyball, water
:12:42. > :12:48.polo, handball and athletics before deciding to have a go at judo. What
:12:49. > :12:51.an athlete she is. She looked to me as if she was ready for retirement
:12:52. > :12:59.after the London Olympic Games, but here she is now fighting to get
:13:00. > :13:05.through to the final. Can Conway latch onto an arm? She is looking
:13:06. > :13:13.for the ground, looking to try and go onto her arm. Now she is on her
:13:14. > :13:17.arm. Can she get it. Yuri Alvear is in trouble. If Sally Conway can
:13:18. > :13:23.straighten beers, she has got a medal. Yuri Alvear hold on. How long
:13:24. > :13:29.is the referee going to let her hold on? This is taking a lot out of them
:13:30. > :13:34.both. Sally Conway had to decide whether she was going to expend a
:13:35. > :13:40.lot of energy. Look at the power from the Colombian. She held onto
:13:41. > :13:48.that arm. Sally Conway, nine times out of ten gets that arm out. You
:13:49. > :13:53.have done so much and then you get up and you start to look at the
:13:54. > :13:57.scoreboard. This crowd is very respectful of every athlete out
:13:58. > :14:03.here, but perhaps they are on the Colombian side. Brazil have been
:14:04. > :14:07.excellent and have been involved in medal matches throughout. Not always
:14:08. > :14:15.winning them, but certainly a gold medal on the board for Brazil early
:14:16. > :14:19.on. This match will present a medal of some description to the victor.
:14:20. > :14:30.Conway was taken down and she tries to counter attack. Now all of a
:14:31. > :14:37.sudden she is on the arm. Yuri Alvear needs to stay there. The
:14:38. > :14:42.referee will let her carry on, as long as it is progressive. Yuri
:14:43. > :14:45.Alvear nearly scored, but there is still no score on the board and they
:14:46. > :14:53.are both going for it. What a semifinal. They are trading blows at
:14:54. > :14:58.a rate of knots. This time Yuri Alvear goes to ground in defence and
:14:59. > :15:03.tries to cover up Sally Conway has had one goal and could not quite get
:15:04. > :15:10.there. The referee was not having much of that one. Less than a minute
:15:11. > :15:19.remaining, a clean scoresheet. What a match. She has caught her! No, she
:15:20. > :15:27.just landed on her backside. It was not quite a score. Sally Conway
:15:28. > :15:35.nearly with just 35 seconds to go, it nearly surprised the Colombian.
:15:36. > :15:42.Yuri Alvear is still in this match. What a semifinal this is!
:15:43. > :15:53.She is ready to attack. Sally Conway is defending. Sally Conway is
:15:54. > :16:00.waiting. Now then, Sally Conway almost catches, is she on the arm?
:16:01. > :16:08.My goodness me. That is amazing stuff. It is going to go into golden
:16:09. > :16:12.score. Sally Conway has almost won this match three times. If it was a
:16:13. > :16:19.boxing bout and you were scoring each attack, she would be over the
:16:20. > :16:24.line. She would be in the final but that is not the way it works, we
:16:25. > :16:33.need a score on the board. Golden score, anybody's match. GB in the
:16:34. > :16:38.blue. Alvear going for it, she is not letting up and she is giving it
:16:39. > :16:46.everything. Sally Conway is as well. She can't stay there, Conway. Now
:16:47. > :16:52.the coaches shout their instructions. Now is the time on the
:16:53. > :17:04.mat A. Can either get a grip? Taken down,
:17:05. > :17:10.she has been taken down, Sally Conway. Great work from the
:17:11. > :17:18.Colombian, Yuri Alvear. She is the victor. She is an Olympic medallist.
:17:19. > :17:23.She already has a bronze now, at least a silver medal. She looks up
:17:24. > :17:29.to the heavens, thinking and praying for a little bit of assistance to
:17:30. > :17:33.convert here into a gold. It is over for Sally Conway in terms of the
:17:34. > :17:37.gold medal match. She will go down as a beaten semifinalist in the
:17:38. > :17:44.battle for bronze and Yuri Alvear, the winner of this semifinal. How
:17:45. > :17:49.close can you get without winning the match? Three times, she had
:17:50. > :17:54.Alvear. Three times, she nearly scored, and she attacked on the
:17:55. > :18:00.ground as well. She had the armlock ready to straighten the arm out,
:18:01. > :18:04.Alvear held on. I have to say, though, that Alvear, the great
:18:05. > :18:08.champion that she is, she held on there and she never stopped coming
:18:09. > :18:11.forwards. She was never going to give up, she wasn't afraid, but
:18:12. > :18:18.Sally Conway, that was brilliant, it really was.
:18:19. > :18:23.CLARE BALDING: Neil Adams giving his assessment. It was brilliant, but it
:18:24. > :18:26.wasn't good enough. This is back live to the diving, the second dive
:18:27. > :18:36.for Jack Laugher and Chris Mears. Two out of two in the bag for Jack
:18:37. > :18:41.and Chris. Keeping composed, doing whatever they need to do at the back
:18:42. > :18:47.of the board, clearing their minds and just letting the dives happen.
:18:48. > :18:51.This is excellent synchronisation. They are going to be top of the
:18:52. > :18:55.leaderboard after this as well. That is exactly the first two rounds they
:18:56. > :18:59.would have been looking for. Now it starts to get interesting as you
:19:00. > :19:08.move into rounds three, four, five and six, where we upped the ante.
:19:09. > :19:16.Good marks. That is the best mark they have achieved so far. In fact,
:19:17. > :19:20.it matches the Russians' first-round and for the time being, looking all
:19:21. > :19:27.right for the likely lads as they think the bigger dives, the much
:19:28. > :19:31.bigger dives to come from round three onwards. We talked about the
:19:32. > :19:37.Russians following in the British weight in terms of practice and
:19:38. > :19:47.training -- wake. We will see if they can match score wise with an
:19:48. > :19:53.inward one and a harp pike. -- one and a half somersault with pike. You
:19:54. > :19:57.can see the execution of the Russian dives are super-sharp. Beautiful
:19:58. > :20:06.vertical entries into the water from both divers. Of course, Ilya
:20:07. > :20:09.Zakharov, closest to us, is the 2012 Olympic champion in this event. So
:20:10. > :20:13.the first Marc Shuh will see on the left-hand side of the screen is the
:20:14. > :20:20.execution, the highest and lowest are taken away to leave two marks.
:20:21. > :20:25.Synchronisation is on the right hand side. Highest and lowest are taken
:20:26. > :20:27.off to leave the synchronisation marks -- the first Marc Shuh will
:20:28. > :20:37.see on the side of the screen. So they slot in behind Great
:20:38. > :20:42.Britain, they were leading, they are ahead after round one but not any
:20:43. > :20:48.more, slightly in behind, Great Britain in first place and Russia in
:20:49. > :20:58.second. So on to the Chinese we go, here comes Cao Yuan and Qin Kai,
:20:59. > :21:04.another variant for you to watch, a forward one and a half somersault
:21:05. > :21:08.with pike. It is superb, as you would expect, but it isn't as good
:21:09. > :21:15.as I have seen from them, or expect from them in many ways. You can see
:21:16. > :21:18.Qin Kai, closest to us, landing back from the end of the diving board,
:21:19. > :21:23.not very much spring back there. It throws up a marginal difference
:21:24. > :21:28.between the distance from the diving board. Only slightly. The judges
:21:29. > :21:32.don't get to see the replay, this is only for our enjoyment. You can see,
:21:33. > :21:38.marginally different distances from the diving board. Super slow motion.
:21:39. > :21:46.They are a little bit off from what we have seen. The marks awarded are
:21:47. > :21:51.generous. They are, aren't they? It annoys me, it does and you have
:21:52. > :21:55.heard me say it before, I don't want to labour the point, but when you
:21:56. > :22:03.don't land in the same part of the pool, how can that be
:22:04. > :22:08.synchronisation? China move into a lead that is only a marginal one,
:22:09. > :22:14.over Great Britain, with Russia in third. Now Matos and Outerelo for
:22:15. > :22:16.Brazil in their reverse dive, and then we will be into the really big
:22:17. > :22:33.stuff from here on in. Oh, dear. There you go. It was a bit
:22:34. > :22:37.of a mix-up, wasn't it? So the Brazilian crowd, polite applause, I
:22:38. > :22:42.think you would call it. Just getting stuck, having to bend his
:22:43. > :22:48.legs. Looks like he turned into a frog on his way out of it. He almost
:22:49. > :22:53.did and Adam Peaty breaststroke kick on his way round. Averted a near
:22:54. > :22:57.disaster of landing on his back but the judges were penalised heavily,
:22:58. > :23:02.so the execution marks will probably be... The coach's expression says it
:23:03. > :23:10.all. These are the easiest dives as well. What an absolute shame. I
:23:11. > :23:16.really feel for him, he didn't hurt himself, he just feels terrible. He
:23:17. > :23:26.needs to compose and get over that. The most important dive is the next
:23:27. > :23:32.dive. Let it go. 28.80, sadly. As you say, he has to compose himself,
:23:33. > :23:40.because they have bigger dives to come. I am a little bit concerned
:23:41. > :23:42.about their welfare for the rest of the competition. We will see,
:23:43. > :23:48.hopefully they will get back contract and the end of round one
:23:49. > :23:53.has China, Great Britain and Russia as one, two, three -- they will get
:23:54. > :23:59.back on track. Forget what has gone before, this is the big stuff now
:24:00. > :24:06.and we can tee up that Great Britain have dives in tariff terms worth
:24:07. > :24:19.three points nine and 3.8. Russia go with their 3.9 in round four. We go
:24:20. > :24:26.up in twos. China with that marginal lead, I think, slightly marked up on
:24:27. > :24:32.both rounds. But that is where they are and that is what they have got.
:24:33. > :24:36.We move on to the Germans. Around three starts with Stephan Feck and
:24:37. > :24:42.Patrick Hausding. By far the biggest we have seen so far, reversed two
:24:43. > :24:48.and a half with one and a half twists. This is where the
:24:49. > :24:50.competition really starts, this is an example of the most complicated
:24:51. > :24:59.dives humanly possible from the three metre springboard. You see the
:25:00. > :25:04.one one half twists, the remainder of the dive is executed very well
:25:05. > :25:08.indeed. Marvellous synchronisation throughout, twisting at the same
:25:09. > :25:13.time, folding into that pike shape all the way through. If this gets 80
:25:14. > :25:17.points, this is a hell of a start for the German pair and it will
:25:18. > :25:20.certainly set the tone as we move into the business end of the
:25:21. > :25:26.competition. This is where we will see the movers and shakers making
:25:27. > :25:30.their moves. It is experience for you. They have been around a long
:25:31. > :25:34.time these two and they know what they are about. The old
:25:35. > :25:41.multiplication working with that degree of difficulty, a big marker
:25:42. > :25:58.for the Germans early on. Now onto the Mexicans, three point for --
:25:59. > :26:01.3.4. Rommel Pacheco furthest from us absolutely world-class in the
:26:02. > :26:05.execution of his dive but then we start to look at the
:26:06. > :26:10.synchronisation. The lion's share of the marks for synchronisation and
:26:11. > :26:15.they are rout. Differing distances from the diving board, twisting at
:26:16. > :26:18.fractionally different times. Ocampo is quite large for a diver, he looks
:26:19. > :26:24.like he would go well in the weightlifting. The super slow motion
:26:25. > :26:28.quite clearly showing you different angles of entry. We are only talking
:26:29. > :26:37.fractions, so the marks for synchronisation are still good but
:26:38. > :26:42.not the nines that we saw. Slightly higher tariff, compensated for that.
:26:43. > :26:47.They move in behind Germany. They don't overtake them. Germany,
:26:48. > :26:53.Mexico, one, two in the early stages. The USA, Sam Dorman and Mike
:26:54. > :27:00.Hixon, same dive we will see the Italians do as well, coming up next.
:27:01. > :27:03.Forward two and a half somersault with two twists with pike. The
:27:04. > :27:10.Americans have a little bit of ground to make up, not too far
:27:11. > :27:18.adrift after the first two rounds. Seventh after round two. Wow, that
:27:19. > :27:24.is remarkable from our US contingent here. For a new pairing, these guys
:27:25. > :27:28.have really got it together. Not that much international experience,
:27:29. > :27:33.but they are on form and this is beautiful. This is better than the
:27:34. > :27:37.Mexicans. The synchronisation is better, twisting at the same time,
:27:38. > :27:49.same distance from the diving board. They showed good a .5s and nines for
:27:50. > :27:54.synchronisation. -- they should get 8.5s. This competition is on. It may
:27:55. > :27:58.be a case pass the parcel in terms of the leaders. We have the Germans
:27:59. > :28:04.in front, the Mexicans slotted in behind them and now the USA have
:28:05. > :28:08.taken over from the Germans. It is so tight, as we expected to be
:28:09. > :28:12.through the whole of this campaign. It is always good when you have a
:28:13. > :28:16.little cluster of the same dive that you get a chance to look at. Great
:28:17. > :28:22.Britain will be doing exactly the same dive and the Chinese as well in
:28:23. > :28:27.round three. Forward two and a half with two twists. The best mark so
:28:28. > :28:33.far on this dive for the USA with 85.60 eight.
:28:34. > :28:46.Well, the Italians join the party as well. Welcome to the three metre
:28:47. > :28:51.synchro. Like-for-like, two and a half somersault, two twists. Flashy
:28:52. > :28:59.choice of swimwear and backing it up with their third effort. So this
:29:00. > :29:03.will get over 80 points as well. Not quite as good as our American pair
:29:04. > :29:09.just before. You can see quite clearly the judges in their ponchos.
:29:10. > :29:12.The rain has subsided now but the pool is still green. Yes, I don't
:29:13. > :29:19.think that is going to change for a while and the score for the
:29:20. > :29:26.Italians, 80.58. Everyone in and around the 80s in the first four
:29:27. > :29:29.dives. Incredible. That sets the standard which will hopefully be
:29:30. > :29:36.carried on in a similar vein by these two. Far side, on the left as
:29:37. > :29:42.you look at that angle, Chris Mears, Jack Law. -- Jack Laugher. Same
:29:43. > :29:56.dive, hopefully better consequences. Yes, tremendous! Beautiful
:29:57. > :30:02.synchronisation. The union Jacks get waived by the friends and family.
:30:03. > :30:06.Look at this. The judges don't get to see this angle but it is
:30:07. > :30:10.beautiful to see for us how synchronised our boys were all the
:30:11. > :30:15.way through that. Christmas like league throwing up a bit too much
:30:16. > :30:20.splash -- Chris closes to us. It will keep them in the mix, probably
:30:21. > :30:25.low 80s for this dive. I have seen them do it a little bit better from
:30:26. > :30:28.an execution point of view but the all-important synchronisation was
:30:29. > :30:35.there. Our boys are still in the running. Does put them in first
:30:36. > :30:41.place for the time being, with the Chinese and the Russian still to
:30:42. > :30:44.come. I think we can discount the Brazilians, unfortunately, but two
:30:45. > :30:50.of the big hitters to come, the gold and silver medallists from last
:30:51. > :30:54.year. Here come the silver medallists, Kuznetsov and Zakharov.
:30:55. > :31:12.They are going for something a little bit different.
:31:13. > :31:21.It is a game of tactics. The Russians opted for a different
:31:22. > :31:27.order. We are going to see this dive from most of the pairs here. The
:31:28. > :31:33.degree of difficulty was the same as the one that the British boys have
:31:34. > :31:39.just nailed. I was going to say they have fluffed it, but they have not.
:31:40. > :31:47.But they are not as good as I have seen from them. Their execution has
:31:48. > :31:51.let them down. They will be mid-70s, which is ten points down on what our
:31:52. > :31:58.boys did. It will not keep them in the mix at the top at the time
:31:59. > :32:03.being. They have a 3.9 to come, as do the Brits. There are 3.9 comes in
:32:04. > :32:10.the next round where they can play catch up. At the moment Great
:32:11. > :32:34.Britain currently lead. Well, that was not as top-notch as
:32:35. > :32:39.we have seen. Let's have a look. Forward to and half somersault, two
:32:40. > :32:44.twists. The synchronisation is not a mirror image. I think
:32:45. > :32:51.synchronisation will be around eight. If they go higher than eight,
:32:52. > :32:57.I will have to go out on a limb and disagree. You can see on the slow
:32:58. > :33:02.motion, which the judges do not get to see, that they are marginally out
:33:03. > :33:11.of time. All I want to see is the maximum of eight. In my opinion they
:33:12. > :33:21.have got that right. Only 79 points for China. Interesting. The
:33:22. > :33:28.Brazilians have still to come yet. Great Britain are in first place.
:33:29. > :33:35.Come on, Brazil. Get your heads on this one.
:33:36. > :33:40.This sometimes happens when you have had something that has gone
:33:41. > :33:47.disastrously wrong in diving times, you have to shake it off and compose
:33:48. > :33:59.your state. That is what the Brazilians had to do. You can see
:34:00. > :34:04.the differing spinning speed. Moving sideways on the diving board, there
:34:05. > :34:11.is so much going on they have not had time to put it all together. The
:34:12. > :34:21.judges did not really know what to make of it. So, that is Brazil ban
:34:22. > :34:33.and dusted. Look at this. Half down. Three to go. A slender lead over
:34:34. > :34:38.China. The others are all still very much in the mix.
:34:39. > :34:43.CLARE BALDING: Great Britain leading at the halfway stage. We will be
:34:44. > :34:48.back there very shortly, but just to remind you Great Britain has a new
:34:49. > :34:54.Olympic champion. Joe Clarke won a gold medal in the kayak K-1.
:34:55. > :34:58.Campbell Walsh took silver in 2004. By Joe Clarke is an Olympic champion
:34:59. > :35:06.and we will be hearing from him a little later on. This was him onto
:35:07. > :35:11.the podium. A huge leap forward, a wonderful moment for Joe Klein in
:35:12. > :35:24.the K-1 kayaking. And also within the last hour and a quarter a bronze
:35:25. > :35:33.medal in the double track shooting. A perfect bronze medal play-off,
:35:34. > :35:39.where his shooting was absolutely spot on. He was against fellow Brit
:35:40. > :35:44.Tim Kneale. A bronze this morning for Chris Froome, a bronze for him
:35:45. > :35:48.and a gold in the kayaking. Are we looking at a potential gold medal
:35:49. > :35:55.here in the synchronised three metre diving?
:35:56. > :36:01.I watched them do this in training and they were all over the shop.
:36:02. > :36:08.They pulled it out of the bag when they needed it the most. This is 3.5
:36:09. > :36:14.difficulty. You need to jump away from the board and spin backwards
:36:15. > :36:21.towards, leaving yourself enough room to avoid it. The
:36:22. > :36:31.synchronisation is good. Execution is marginally short of vertical. I
:36:32. > :36:37.think that is a bit harsh to be honest. But they will have to take
:36:38. > :36:43.what the judges have handed out. They were hoping for 80 on that. The
:36:44. > :36:59.rain starts again. It is a bit heavy at the moment.
:37:00. > :37:15.They are currently in sixth place. Ocampo let the team down a little
:37:16. > :37:22.bit with his execution. He is closest to us. He seems to be OK
:37:23. > :37:29.until he let's go too early. Then he was short of vertical. His marks
:37:30. > :37:35.will only be around 5.5 or six. Pacheco does a good job on his
:37:36. > :37:38.execution. It will mean the synchronisation marks are affected
:37:39. > :37:44.because they were not doing the same thing at the same time. Our papers
:37:45. > :37:49.are getting blown everywhere and you can hear the wind whistling through.
:37:50. > :37:57.Cracks are starting to appear in a few of these performances now. That
:37:58. > :38:05.was the faulty washing machine going completely wrong on the spin! Yes.
:38:06. > :38:10.You can see the rain on the screen, which is now blowing across the
:38:11. > :38:18.diving board. Not the most clement of conditions here in Rio. 24 hours
:38:19. > :38:25.ago it was baking hot with sunshine. Now it is more like Manchester in
:38:26. > :38:32.November! The Americans have started very well.
:38:33. > :38:39.It is back to the old school. This used to be the dive of choice in the
:38:40. > :38:45.90s and then the formula changed ever so slightly in the late 90s and
:38:46. > :38:51.there were less twists and more somersaults. Now they have revised
:38:52. > :38:57.the difficulty and it is 3.5, so it is well worth the effort. The
:38:58. > :39:02.American pair were my dark horses. At the moment it is the Americans
:39:03. > :39:07.putting pressure on our boys and the Chinese. That is a fantastic dive
:39:08. > :39:18.from the Americans. They have done fantastic so far. America are doing
:39:19. > :39:23.particularly well here so far. Probably achieving beyond what they
:39:24. > :39:36.expected. They go into an early lead in round four. We welcome the
:39:37. > :39:40.Italians onto the board. Giovanni Tocci and Andrea Chiarabini. The
:39:41. > :39:59.first of the 3.8s. It is the first one of many. It is
:40:00. > :40:06.frustrating when you bet big. It is 3.8 and if you get it right, it
:40:07. > :40:10.comes home, but it is so easy to falter on this diet. Forward four
:40:11. > :40:14.and a half somersaults, there is hardly enough space to get it all
:40:15. > :40:29.in. The Italians made a bit of a meal of that. They landed short of
:40:30. > :40:35.vertical. Only 65. Again like the Mexicans it is nowhere near what
:40:36. > :40:45.they wanted. 64 for them and 69 for the Mexicans. The Brits are not
:40:46. > :40:46.going for 3.8 or 3.9, it is a fairly low tariff in comparison to what is
:40:47. > :41:18.to come next. Yes! So good. This is their bogey
:41:19. > :41:24.dive. I am out of my seat. If they have got this one, they firmly put
:41:25. > :41:32.pressure on their counterparts. This is excellent work from our boys. And
:41:33. > :41:40.in word three and a half. Eights on execution. Maybe even and nine on
:41:41. > :41:52.synchronisation. If they have got that, they are in the mid-80s.
:41:53. > :42:00.Well, the Americans didn't do very well, but the Brits have done a
:42:01. > :42:08.little bit better to edge themselves back into first place. CLARE
:42:09. > :42:15.BALDING: It really is a filthy day in Rio. The rain is pouring down.
:42:16. > :42:18.The tennis has been delayed, the rowing has been cancelled. The
:42:19. > :42:29.indoor sports are very much the way to go. Sally Conway is in bronze
:42:30. > :42:35.medal action in the judo. We are showing you this with a slight
:42:36. > :42:53.delay, but she is up against Austria's Bernadette Craft.
:42:54. > :43:02.Sally Conway will look to get it to ground as fast as she she can to as
:43:03. > :43:07.well. Bernadette Graf is very awkward, left stance. Conway will
:43:08. > :43:13.have to be very careful, she just needs to work on the grips. She
:43:14. > :43:18.needs to dominate the grips. She needs to stop that big left arm of
:43:19. > :43:27.Graf. She will realise that, she will know that. Our coaches will
:43:28. > :43:33.have told her that. And she went down there. It was Sally Conway who
:43:34. > :43:35.initiated that throat. As she went down Graf did not quite turn it, so
:43:36. > :43:59.no score given. Graf is trying to control the head
:44:00. > :44:04.of Conway. Both of them have to attack. If you get a grip, you have
:44:05. > :44:13.to attack of it, otherwise it is a penalty. The penalties will be shown
:44:14. > :44:19.by a little yellow flag. Four of those and it is disqualification, so
:44:20. > :44:26.they cannot afford that. Graf tries the foot sweep. I think they will
:44:27. > :44:35.both get penalised. Just Conway. Now she has got to come forward. It
:44:36. > :44:39.might be time for Sally to look down to her right forearm, that is where
:44:40. > :44:47.she wears a car to. A motivational quote that simply says believe. When
:44:48. > :44:52.things are tough it is good to have a little reminder when I look down,
:44:53. > :44:57.she says. She cannot see it either, but she knows it is better. She has
:44:58. > :45:03.done it all the way through this event. She has to believe she can
:45:04. > :45:09.get out of this and we know she can. And she has great belief, she really
:45:10. > :45:15.has. She trains hard. She is one of the hardest trainers and she has got
:45:16. > :45:19.some great training partners in Scotland and they are all behind her
:45:20. > :45:29.right now. They are listening as we are commentating. They might not be
:45:30. > :45:33.able to hear you, but they are jumping up and down because the girl
:45:34. > :45:40.from Edinburgh has the lead against Bernadette Graf. A silver medal from
:45:41. > :45:44.the world Masters, world number four, has a great pedigree. She has
:45:45. > :45:49.an opponent who is taking it to her at the moment.
:45:50. > :45:55.Graf is going to come forward, she will not let that slide. Sally
:45:56. > :46:00.Conway can't afford to run away. She will get a second penalty here,
:46:01. > :46:05.Sally Conway, for blocking out. Sally Conway has to go forwards,
:46:06. > :46:09.needs to start as if the contest has already started, because she needs
:46:10. > :46:16.to start to attack. Attack is the best form of defence. And she can't
:46:17. > :46:22.afford another penalty. Into the last-minute here. Graf pushing
:46:23. > :46:28.forward all the time, putting her under pressure. Her coach, all he is
:46:29. > :46:34.doing is shouting instructions for her to go forwards. Played hockey
:46:35. > :46:38.before concentrating on judo. Penalties were good in that game,
:46:39. > :46:43.she doesn't want that here. She wants to maintain the lead or push
:46:44. > :46:46.on. The penalties mean she has two. How does the Austrian handle this?
:46:47. > :46:53.Does she sit and wait or have one more crack? This is an intriguing 40
:46:54. > :46:57.seconds coming up. She has got to come forward all the time. Sally
:46:58. > :47:02.Conway, we need a couple of good attacks from her and she could block
:47:03. > :47:06.out. She could get another penalty but she doesn't want it. Another
:47:07. > :47:12.good attack from Conway, that got her out of trouble. 21 seconds away
:47:13. > :47:18.from a medal for Conway of Great Britain. Graf of Austria, the same
:47:19. > :47:24.time, she needs to find something in that time. Can she get it back? I
:47:25. > :47:29.think she is pushing forwards now. Nothing silly from Sally Conway. She
:47:30. > :47:34.stops it and blocks it. Eight seconds. She is going to try and get
:47:35. > :47:39.round the legs. As long as it is progressive, the referee will allow
:47:40. > :47:45.it. Sally Conway get the medal. Bronze medal for Conway and I have
:47:46. > :47:51.to say that she fully deserved that. Absolute brilliance. She took out
:47:52. > :47:56.the current world champion by ippon in the early rounds. She almost beat
:47:57. > :48:01.the Colombian two-time world champion, that was so close, it went
:48:02. > :48:07.to Golden score. She lost only just. And for bronze medal, she beats
:48:08. > :48:13.Bernadette Graf by yuko, that was amazing. She believed and that she
:48:14. > :48:18.has achieved. Bronze medallist in Rio, Sally Conway of Great Britain
:48:19. > :48:23.and the wonderful hug these two, you would expect to see it. Good
:48:24. > :48:27.friends. Bernadette Graf obviously very disappointed, so close yet so
:48:28. > :48:32.far. Second Olympic Games, first Olympic medal.
:48:33. > :48:37.CLARE BALDING: and you can see how much it means to Sally Conway, Great
:48:38. > :48:42.Britain's the battle in less than two hours, fourth of the day in
:48:43. > :48:46.total. Joe Clarke won gold in the kayak K1, Chris Froome took bronze
:48:47. > :48:51.in the time trial, Steve Scott took bronze in the double trap and Sally
:48:52. > :48:55.Conway taking bronze in the judo. Fabulous stuff from her. Let's head
:48:56. > :48:59.back to the diving, where Jack Laugher and Chris Mears are in the
:49:00. > :49:03.lead in the three metre synchro. Those are the conditions, they are
:49:04. > :49:07.pretty filthy, a lot of people won't enjoy them, but Chris and Jack are
:49:08. > :49:14.coping brilliantly. We have just seen the Mexicans do
:49:15. > :49:20.the 74.46 to put them into second with the Germans faltering. So at
:49:21. > :49:24.the moment, around Chris and Jack, the others are not putting the
:49:25. > :49:28.pressure on. It is only the US and China keeping them in range. These
:49:29. > :49:30.two most definitely are diving pretty much above what we would have
:49:31. > :49:45.expected from them. Have we seen the first little
:49:46. > :49:52.mistake there from despair? Synchronisation is first class
:49:53. > :49:57.through and through -- from despair? The execution from both divers, over
:49:58. > :50:02.rotating. You won't see from this angle, you will see the excellent
:50:03. > :50:06.synchronisation. When we see it from this angle, the angle the judges
:50:07. > :50:12.see, inward, three and a half in the tuck position, it is all good and
:50:13. > :50:16.then over rotation from both divers. So that isn't, by any stretch, a
:50:17. > :50:22.disaster for despair but it is a slight error and means they will not
:50:23. > :50:28.get over 80 points -- a disaster for this pair. Mike Hixon's expression
:50:29. > :50:40.tells you quite a bit as they see the scores come up before you do.
:50:41. > :50:43.78.50 four. They will move into the 350 territory as we see the
:50:44. > :50:54.Italians, sixth after round four. 3.5, it might be a slightly shaky
:50:55. > :51:09.one. They have done a OK. I took a little
:51:10. > :51:15.inhale of breath as Tocci came into the end, he didn't have the best
:51:16. > :51:19.hurdle step, you could see both divers a little bit back from the
:51:20. > :51:25.end of the diving board, there isn't as much a spring there. You need to
:51:26. > :51:30.jump away and spin around. We are just looking at the rain. Here is
:51:31. > :51:34.some diving. Reverse three and a half, going for broke, putting all
:51:35. > :51:39.of their most difficult dives in. They have done really well to
:51:40. > :51:44.qualify outright for this Olympic final. It isn't going their way but
:51:45. > :51:47.they are all guns blazing. The diving experts in here, the
:51:48. > :51:59.Brazilian audience think that isn't very fair, but it is actually fair
:52:00. > :52:04.from the judges. 70.35 for them. Now, I think it is fair to say that
:52:05. > :52:08.if Jack and Chris nailed this, or get close to Nayland it, it is
:52:09. > :52:14.definitely a medal of some description because the tariff is so
:52:15. > :52:18.high, it can be stratospheric in terms of marks. 3.9. Forward, two
:52:19. > :52:31.and a half somersaults. Yes! It is good enough! It is good
:52:32. > :52:35.enough! Yes, yes, yes! Marginally different distances from the diving
:52:36. > :52:40.board but both Jack and Chris have absolutely nailed this. This is
:52:41. > :52:44.huge, it is a dive that needed to be really good. They can drive a car
:52:45. > :52:49.through that gap, the judges will not give them very big marks for
:52:50. > :52:54.synchronisation. I think they will get eights on synchro. Execution was
:52:55. > :52:59.spot on but because of the degree of difficulty, they will get way over
:53:00. > :53:02.80 points. If only they were exactly the same distance from the diving
:53:03. > :53:11.board, we would be looking at 100 points. But it is 86. Are we getting
:53:12. > :53:17.excited or what here? They now have an 11 point advantage over the USA,
:53:18. > :53:21.but we have the Russians to come. Maybe we can discount them now. And
:53:22. > :53:33.of course, the Chinese in this round as well. Their 3.9 didn't work out.
:53:34. > :53:39.Now the Russians. They are out of it. Wow. You have just seen the
:53:40. > :53:45.Olympic silver medallists from four years ago fall out of the back door
:53:46. > :53:50.in this competition. That is two huge errors from this very
:53:51. > :53:54.experienced pair. We are looking at the Olympic champion going surfing
:53:55. > :53:58.there as he over rotates massively on his reverse three and a half. The
:53:59. > :54:03.Russians will be way outside the medals. His coach, that is
:54:04. > :54:10.disbelief. Our coaching team with their poker faces, one with a wry
:54:11. > :54:15.smile. What a great expression on his face, just wandered off. One of
:54:16. > :54:22.those faces that just tells every single story that you want from that
:54:23. > :54:29.kind of dive. Goodbye rusher. Most definitely now. Obviously, it is
:54:30. > :54:32.hello, China. -- goodbye, rusher. What they need to get above Great
:54:33. > :54:51.Britain is nines across-the-board. It is a supersonic effort, my
:54:52. > :54:57.goodness me! I would love to be saying that wasn't excellent but
:54:58. > :55:00.that was superior. What a dive. Reverse three and a half, we saw how
:55:01. > :55:04.easy it is to make a mistake with the Russian pair. They are
:55:05. > :55:10.marginally different on the spin speeds but look at that smooth entry
:55:11. > :55:15.into the water from both athletes. Execution is going to be nines.
:55:16. > :55:23.Synchronisation is going to be a .5s and nines. China not giving up, as
:55:24. > :55:28.expected, they are putting up a fight. Not leading, though, that is
:55:29. > :55:34.the crucial point. It takes them within three points of Great
:55:35. > :55:39.Britain. So they are still in the lead and will take a lead into round
:55:40. > :55:43.six, but only three points between Great Britain and China and the USA
:55:44. > :55:46.a further eight points back. It looks like it will be those three
:55:47. > :55:53.for the medals. In what order, who can tell? All will be revealed in
:55:54. > :56:00.round six. The Brazilians, who have had a rather torrid time, certainly
:56:01. > :56:09.with that second round dive, have got it back together to a certain
:56:10. > :56:10.extent. And this will be 3.4. It is their joint biggest dive of the
:56:11. > :56:22.competition. They are making up the numbers now.
:56:23. > :56:27.Well, the Brazilians are stepping up to the mark as well. This is still
:56:28. > :56:30.three point for degree of difficulty, we have seen this from
:56:31. > :56:36.most of the pairs, forward, two and a half a twist. This is the best
:56:37. > :56:40.synchro we have seen from the Brazilians. Same distance from the
:56:41. > :56:44.diving board. I hope the judges go with them because the crowd are
:56:45. > :56:51.going to boo like a crazy if there are not any eights in there. -- boo
:56:52. > :57:00.like crazy. I think that is very, very fair. The super slow motion.
:57:01. > :57:04.They only made seven is! The crowd were kind of lukewarm, they didn't
:57:05. > :57:10.want to boo, they thought it was OK but they weren't overly enthusiastic
:57:11. > :57:18.about the marks. So, where are we, how is it looking? End of round five
:57:19. > :57:26.and the standings make very good watching and looking for Great
:57:27. > :57:29.Britain eyes. Jack Laugher and Chris Mears have a slender lead over China
:57:30. > :57:33.and they have an 8-point advantage over USA and it does look very much
:57:34. > :57:38.like it is going to be those three competing for the medals.
:57:39. > :57:43.CLARE BALDING: Britain Great has never won a gold medal in diving.
:57:44. > :57:48.Could we be on the verge of something special? Meanwhile, at the
:57:49. > :57:53.gymnastics, the men's all-around final and Max Whitlock lies in
:57:54. > :58:00.second place after two advance. That is live on BBC Four, we will be
:58:01. > :58:05.joining it after the diving on BBC One. An amazing day, Joe Clarke
:58:06. > :58:09.winning gold in the kayak K1 and three bronze medals. It looks like
:58:10. > :58:15.another medal is coming, could it be another gold at the diving? Let's
:58:16. > :58:20.rejoin Bob and Leon. Here we go, then. The last round. We
:58:21. > :58:24.can't yet categorically say that Jack Laugher and Chris Mears have a
:58:25. > :58:28.medal, because mathematically it is not the case, but it is starting to
:58:29. > :58:31.look very much like Great Britain, China and USA will be fighting it
:58:32. > :58:36.out amongst themselves for the medals, because these two don't have
:58:37. > :58:39.a tariff big enough to get them in the mix, unless all three of the
:58:40. > :58:46.leaders falter, of course, but that looks unlikely.
:58:47. > :58:54.The German pair have been slightly under part today. Well, the Germans
:58:55. > :59:00.are playing safe. Everyone else is going all guns blazing on this last
:59:01. > :59:05.round. Anyone else who is in the mix, that is. A forward four and a
:59:06. > :59:10.half from the Americans, Team GB, the Russians and the Chinese. The
:59:11. > :59:15.Germans are playing a game of tactics. They are relying on other
:59:16. > :59:19.pairs to falter to get into the medals, they have put down the
:59:20. > :59:28.market there. This is the score to beat. What is the score to beat?
:59:29. > :59:33.410, not a bad mark at all, that is good for the Germans and they had a
:59:34. > :59:38.great round three and a great round six, but a couple of wobbles along
:59:39. > :59:44.the way mean they probably won't be in the top three come the end of the
:59:45. > :59:49.competition. Fifth going into the last round and a forward four and a
:59:50. > :59:55.half, as Leon mentioned, will be Mexico, USA, Great Britain, Russian
:59:56. > :59:59.and China. All doing this very, very tough dive. We have seen the 3.9
:00:00. > :00:03.pretty well executed by Great Britain. Pretty much everybody in
:00:04. > :00:19.the top edge along does this 3-.8. -- top Patchell on. That is weird,
:00:20. > :00:25.the light came on as they did that. They have got to do that again. He
:00:26. > :00:29.is putting his hand up, that means, Ocampo, he was put off by something
:00:30. > :00:34.that happened outside of his control. As I was walking, the
:00:35. > :00:38.lights came on, that spun me out, can we dive again, please? That is
:00:39. > :00:44.my best guess. The referee will decide whether that happen. Remember
:00:45. > :00:49.Tom Daley in London? The flashes went off and he asked for another
:00:50. > :00:55.and he was awarded one. The Mexican Ocampo has just made a request to
:00:56. > :01:00.the diving officials to see if they can get another dive. By the way,
:01:01. > :01:04.Petch Echo is diving unbelievably well. He has nailed every single one
:01:05. > :01:11.of his dives and it is Ocampo who has asked.
:01:12. > :01:19.He is right. I mention it in commentary. Just as they were about
:01:20. > :01:25.to dive, the lights came on. They have got to give it, surely. He is
:01:26. > :01:30.having a decent conversation here. Surely they have to give it to them.
:01:31. > :01:45.He was in preparation when the lights came on. He does not look
:01:46. > :01:50.very happy. Watch this. There. He has pushed his luck a little bit. It
:01:51. > :01:59.came on before he started moving, that the rules are the rules. Look
:02:00. > :02:05.at Pacheco's dive. It gives us a good idea of what is to come. It is
:02:06. > :02:12.super complicated. Are they going right or not? Let's have a look.
:02:13. > :02:20.They are going to go back again. Let's wait and see. Yes, they are
:02:21. > :02:27.doing it again. Drama in the swimming pool. I think that is fair.
:02:28. > :02:34.I thought why are those lights coming on like this? They may be on
:02:35. > :02:38.a timer. What will be interesting is how the Americans and deal with the
:02:39. > :02:42.delay. It is all very disruptive. We know what happened the last time
:02:43. > :02:49.with this event in 2004 when there was disruption. With the Greeks,
:02:50. > :02:55.with people jumping into the swimming pool. And the results were
:02:56. > :03:01.chaotic after that. Let's settle things down and see what the Mexican
:03:02. > :03:09.pair have got. Are the Americans protesting about that? No, I do not
:03:10. > :03:15.think so. They will be up next. They are obviously preparing, or on their
:03:16. > :03:20.way up to get involved on the board, and then they get sent down again to
:03:21. > :03:25.allow the Mexicans to have another dive. Let's see. There are still
:03:26. > :03:32.some conversations going on and the music is still playing. There are a
:03:33. > :03:40.lot of people walking around shaking their heads. The referee has made
:03:41. > :03:50.the decision to allow them to dive again. They are now being held up.
:03:51. > :04:00.Look at it again. Yes, the lights came on and it changes drastically.
:04:01. > :04:04.Now, I don't know. If they get a re-dive, Ocampo needs to do better
:04:05. > :04:18.than he did and Pacheco needs to do the same. They are reading out
:04:19. > :04:31.scores. There is confusion. I agree with you. What is going on here?
:04:32. > :04:40.Have we been given a re-dive or not? You can tell what the crowd thing.
:04:41. > :04:48.Yes or no? Stand down, stand up? They are being told to stand down.
:04:49. > :04:53.Goodbye. That is your mark. Well, that is an absolute farce. That is
:04:54. > :04:57.ridiculous. Having been told they can have the re-dive, they are now
:04:58. > :05:09.being told they have not got a re-dive. Here come the marks. I am
:05:10. > :05:13.confused, Leon. You tell me. We cannot ever tell what went on
:05:14. > :05:18.because we are mute to the conversations that were going on. It
:05:19. > :05:22.looked like they were awarded a re-dive and it looked like it was
:05:23. > :05:28.overturned by the rest of the officials. There is a process they
:05:29. > :05:33.would have gone through. Now the Mexican divers are making their way
:05:34. > :05:38.back towards the officials' table to speak once again to the referee and
:05:39. > :05:43.what is really interesting for me is how the rest of the competitors deal
:05:44. > :05:50.with it. Obviously the Mexicans are going to be completely... Highs and
:05:51. > :05:55.lows and adrenaline already running through their system. The Americans
:05:56. > :05:58.are in the running for a medal and they are on the board and they are
:05:59. > :06:04.not sure whether they are going to go. They are standing there, it is
:06:05. > :06:09.cold, the lights are on, the swimming pool is green. I do not
:06:10. > :06:18.know what is going on. It will be having an effect on our guys. They
:06:19. > :06:22.are waiting, they will be at the back, staying warm. The divers are
:06:23. > :06:31.walking away from the officials and the announcement is being made for
:06:32. > :06:35.the next pair. Here you go, OK. I feel very sorry for them, I think
:06:36. > :06:40.they have been badly treated. We saw it with our own eyes, the lights
:06:41. > :06:46.came on as they were preparing. Anyway, that is now history, we move
:06:47. > :06:55.on. These boys are in middle position at the moment.
:06:56. > :07:03.Oh, my word, a sensational effort from this US pair. High-fives by
:07:04. > :07:08.Stephen Foley, the National performance director. He is on his
:07:09. > :07:16.feet and so am I. This is remarkable. Four and a half forward
:07:17. > :07:20.somersault in the tuck position. They are Olympic medallists and
:07:21. > :07:25.quite right as well. What colour medal it will be I have no idea.
:07:26. > :07:34.This is excellent stuff. Yes, I agree. What a time to do it as well.
:07:35. > :07:40.We have seen the whole gamut of emotions from Michael Hixton. You
:07:41. > :07:50.will now see the marks on the screen, the crowd have seen them.
:07:51. > :07:58.That is astonishing. 450 is now the target score. Great Britain are on
:07:59. > :08:05.the 363. They need 84 to win it, if they are in that position. This is
:08:06. > :08:13.really tight now, isn't it? Do you agree with me on 84? I do not know.
:08:14. > :08:19.I am looking up, because again we are not getting the actual marks
:08:20. > :08:20.needed for the last dive. I hope my calculations are right. Yes, 84 does
:08:21. > :08:47.it. 86 does it. A huge score anyway. They are not in the mix for the
:08:48. > :08:54.medals, but they will want to finish as high as they possibly can. A
:08:55. > :08:58.great dive to finish on. The Italians have been magnificent out
:08:59. > :09:04.there today. They have gone all out with their biggest dives. They have
:09:05. > :09:10.been working hard these past few months since qualifying. They have
:09:11. > :09:14.not ended up on the podium today, but they set out with that
:09:15. > :09:21.intention. They have thrown it all at this competition. I young
:09:22. > :09:25.pairing. Both 21 years old, we are going to see a lot more of this
:09:26. > :09:34.fantastic Italian pair. Will they break 400? They will be quite close.
:09:35. > :09:43.The scores come out now. It leaves them slightly shy of 400. Kisses all
:09:44. > :09:52.round. OK, deep breath from the commentators. Even deeper breaths
:09:53. > :10:02.from the divers because next up... The Italians make their way off the
:10:03. > :10:13.deck. This is the moment for Jack and Chris. They know if they do a
:10:14. > :10:14.3.8 forward four and a half to their very best extent, it is a gold
:10:15. > :10:19.medal. It has to be as good as they have
:10:20. > :10:38.ever done. Yes! Come on! That is an Olympic
:10:39. > :10:45.medal for sure. At least a silver medal. Just the Chinese to follow.
:10:46. > :10:50.They have done it when it counts. The eyes of the world are on them.
:10:51. > :10:57.They are looking at the scoreboard. This is what I hoped it would be.
:10:58. > :11:04.Bang on Synchro. Chris Mears marginally over rotating.
:11:05. > :11:10.Synchronisation is bang on. That was 3.8 degrees of difficulty. It will
:11:11. > :11:18.be over 90 points. If it is, they top the US. Only just. Enough is
:11:19. > :11:30.enough. It is four points better than the US. They are on 454. The
:11:31. > :11:35.Chinese are on 360. So it is mid-90s. We are all doing
:11:36. > :11:51.calculations as if it was going out of fashion. You may be ahead of us
:11:52. > :11:57.at home. 95? Yes, 95. Thank you everybody for doing the
:11:58. > :12:01.calculations. The Chinese are coming soon, but we reckon 95 for the
:12:02. > :12:10.Chinese to win it. And they can do it. There is enough marks for them.
:12:11. > :12:17.We saw 98 from the US. The Russians have faulted too many times to be in
:12:18. > :12:25.the mix with this one. Very good finish from the Russians, but they
:12:26. > :12:30.have left it too late. Too many errors in rounds four and five. It
:12:31. > :12:34.leaves them way off the pace. The Olympic silver medallist from four
:12:35. > :12:38.years ago, the World Championship silver medallists from last year
:12:39. > :12:48.will not be anywhere near the podium. They have been out dived and
:12:49. > :12:55.outclassed today. The results are inconsequential to the results.
:12:56. > :12:59.Thank you, Russia, for coming. But as it happens, today it is not your
:13:00. > :13:05.day. We are getting goose bumps up here. We went through this with Tom
:13:06. > :13:10.and Dan the other day when the last dive in. We waited and waited for
:13:11. > :13:16.the score and we might be in a similar position here. It will be a
:13:17. > :13:25.difficult one to call, but 95 wins it for China. 94 and below it is a
:13:26. > :13:30.Great Britain gold medal for Jack Laugher and Chris Mears. It is worth
:13:31. > :13:37.a lot of points. It could be worth 100 points. Quinn Khai is going for
:13:38. > :13:43.his third consecutive three metres Synchro gold medal. This is the dive
:13:44. > :13:46.that stands between him doing that or getting a silver medal or maybe
:13:47. > :14:02.even a bronze. No, I do not think that is good
:14:03. > :14:06.enough. The Chinese may find themselves in a bronze medal
:14:07. > :14:12.position. Both divers were short into the water. I do not know what
:14:13. > :14:21.to do, stand up, sit down, watch the replay. This could be a gold medal
:14:22. > :14:29.for GB. It will get nowhere near 95. I am pretty sure it is gold for Team
:14:30. > :14:35.GB. Will China split them? Again we have an agonising wait. The marks
:14:36. > :14:43.have not come. Come on, put us out of our misery. Look at their faces.
:14:44. > :14:51.That tells you. Come on, get those marks on the screen. They have done
:14:52. > :14:57.it, oh, my word. It is not even silver for China, it is bronze for
:14:58. > :15:04.China. That means it is pure gold for Jack and Chris. They have done
:15:05. > :15:09.it. They came in with medal expectations. We thought they could
:15:10. > :15:17.get a medal. They have done the ultimate, the best ever. What a
:15:18. > :15:25.performance. 454, it is gold for Great Britain. The boys are in
:15:26. > :15:31.tears, absolutely in bits. The emotion has taken over. There is
:15:32. > :15:36.still one more dive to go, you will have to wait, boys. Still the
:15:37. > :15:43.Brazilians to go. It will all come out in a moment.
:15:44. > :15:48.Matos and Aotearoa low. Then we will back to get some more reaction from
:15:49. > :15:56.the boys -- Outerelo. This hasn't meant anything to the
:15:57. > :15:58.Brazilians for a long, long time, but they will get a good sendoff
:15:59. > :16:09.from the home crowd in Rio. Well, that completes the competition
:16:10. > :16:18.and what a competition it was. Brazil finishing off there, but the
:16:19. > :16:21.diving had already been done. This is their most complicated dive but I
:16:22. > :16:27.have completely lost concentration no. That is the first gold ever for
:16:28. > :16:32.British diving at an Olympic Games, it goes to Jack Laugher and Chris
:16:33. > :16:35.Mears. I am so proud of those boys. All of the coaches that have worked
:16:36. > :16:41.so hard over the years with both of those divers. Olympic champions,
:16:42. > :16:44.well, I am so pleased to be saying that. The Brazilians receive their
:16:45. > :16:52.marks, they have done a great job today but the big news is that Team
:16:53. > :16:56.GB are Olympic champions. Now the cameras can be trained fully on our
:16:57. > :17:02.gold medallists as we say thank you to Brazil for their contribution.
:17:03. > :17:07.But it has not been about them today. It has not been about the
:17:08. > :17:10.Chinese. To the certain extent, it has been about the Americans,
:17:11. > :17:16.because they have done better than anybody would have thought they have
:17:17. > :17:24.made second place. But those are the scenes downstairs as we focus in on
:17:25. > :17:29.the likely lads from Leeds and credit must be given to the job that
:17:30. > :17:35.has been done in Leeds, the job has been done with Jack before by
:17:36. > :17:43.Lindsey Fraser, what a job she did to get Chris to a certain standard.
:17:44. > :17:47.Jack Welby back for the individual. Still compensation is going on about
:17:48. > :17:52.that re-dive, it is still happening down there but it is all history.
:17:53. > :17:57.Eight minutes, that took to resolve. This is not really what we want to
:17:58. > :18:02.see, this is history now, it really doesn't matter. What matters from
:18:03. > :18:10.our point of view is that we have Olympic gold. Silver from... Sorry,
:18:11. > :18:19.bronze from Goodfellow and the Tom Daley the other day in the two metre
:18:20. > :18:25.synchro and three metres, we have gone better, by two notches. What a
:18:26. > :18:32.terrific performance. 434. In the end, they only beat the USA by four
:18:33. > :18:40.points. China, 443. But there you go, they are all getting in there,
:18:41. > :18:45.getting in on the act. That is the team downstairs, all wanting to say
:18:46. > :18:48.their piece and they actually now look very calm, very composed and
:18:49. > :18:53.collected after the initial emotion, the wave of emotion. The Americans
:18:54. > :18:58.are having their own celebrations because they didn't expect a silver
:18:59. > :19:07.medal and China, well, China third. Look at this, Eddie Hinchcliffe in
:19:08. > :19:11.there and that is Tom Daley's coach in there. Everybody just getting
:19:12. > :19:17.involved and the conversation is still going on about that re-dive.
:19:18. > :19:23.Let it go. Let it go. He is going to have to do now. There will be a
:19:24. > :19:27.protest vote in but it won't have any effect on the standings, I
:19:28. > :19:32.wouldn't worry about that too much. Just to put it into perspective
:19:33. > :19:37.Leon, I think we are still waiting for the standings, what this means
:19:38. > :19:40.for British diving. Well, incredible. The first ever Olympic
:19:41. > :19:53.gold medal and it goes to Jack and Chris. Jack and Chris, Laugher and
:19:54. > :19:58.Chris Mears. China, you don't see that too often, in third place, Cao
:19:59. > :20:03.Yuan and Qin Kai going for three in a row, not able to do it on this
:20:04. > :20:07.day. Great Britain at the very top of this file.
:20:08. > :20:11.CLARE BALDING: 21-year-old Jack Laugher and 23-year-old Chris Mears,
:20:12. > :20:16.the first ever British diving champions. They went and then's
:20:17. > :20:22.synchronised 3m Springboard and when you think that Chris Mears in
:20:23. > :20:26.January 2009 was only given a 5% chance of surviving a horrible
:20:27. > :20:30.binders. He collapsed with a ruptured spleen, he lost five pints
:20:31. > :20:35.of blood and when his spleen was removed, he had a series of seizures
:20:36. > :20:39.and a month-long stay in hospital. Jack Laugher with the blonde hair,
:20:40. > :20:43.he has had a sensational run. He was a star at the Commonwealth Games in
:20:44. > :20:48.Glasgow two years ago and those conditions at the diving, wet,
:20:49. > :20:53.blustery winds, freezing cold - very British. And it has come out with a
:20:54. > :20:57.British victory. Sensational stuff. And if you are wondering about the
:20:58. > :21:01.jackets, they look like little medals hanging down, Tom Daley says
:21:02. > :21:07.you get one for every Olympics you go to, so he has three, but for Jack
:21:08. > :21:11.and Chris, this is their first. Disappointment for the Chinese,
:21:12. > :21:15.great result for the Americans. And this is where you find me, I am in a
:21:16. > :21:21.tunnel sheltering from the rain. It is a very overcast night, very cold.
:21:22. > :21:26.The fans around me are waiting to go into the evening events but were
:21:27. > :21:29.gathered around here watching the British divers and earlier were
:21:30. > :21:33.celebrating with all of you at home and me hear the gold medal in the
:21:34. > :21:38.kayaking. This is what happened with Joe Clarke.
:21:39. > :21:48.Here is Joe Clarke. It would be sensational if he can crack that
:21:49. > :21:56.time of 88.87. His time in the semifinal, he was under orders to
:21:57. > :22:00.hold back, we believe. The man from Stoke-on-Trent, the club will be
:22:01. > :22:06.packed today watching his progress. He needs to be calm, settle into
:22:07. > :22:13.that rhythm early. Good upstream on Gega three. Tracking down stream. He
:22:14. > :22:18.has a Nice Open style, once to dive in at seven. Tight and out now, it
:22:19. > :22:23.is all about this line. Keeping control, composure, weight and bang,
:22:24. > :22:30.then back. This look sharp. It is sharper than sharp. Joe Clarke has
:22:31. > :22:36.only been on the British senior team for four years. He nailed 13, the
:22:37. > :22:41.spin on the back of the tale. One Maka de Laet won selection for the
:22:42. > :22:45.Olympics back in October -- he won selection to the Olympics. Prepared
:22:46. > :22:49.specifically for this one run. Breaks back into the flow through
:22:50. > :22:55.18. He is clean and getting faster and faster as the run goes on. Calls
:22:56. > :22:59.it very tight and finds himself broadside on the big wave but he
:23:00. > :23:05.gets across, great power to keep himself online. Slide holder and
:23:06. > :23:10.stop on the exit of 19. Now he is up and running. Can he get the spin on
:23:11. > :23:15.gate 22? That is looking good, it is looking fast. Two gates to go for
:23:16. > :23:20.Joe Clarke as he drives towards the line. He was up on the clock. The
:23:21. > :23:28.time of 88.87 could be beaten. It is! Sensational. Joe Clarke has
:23:29. > :23:36.secured himself a medal here. It is definitely going to be bronze,
:23:37. > :23:39.unless he beats the two men to come. Can't celebrate in terms of gold
:23:40. > :23:43.just yet. CLARE BALDING: and his father Shaun
:23:44. > :23:48.and his mother Mandy were there as well to support him. His girlfriend
:23:49. > :23:53.Charlotte. And Joe Clarke, this was his moment, Olympic champion in the
:23:54. > :23:54.men's K1. Fabulous result for the man from Stafford and afterwards, he
:23:55. > :24:10.spoke to Matthew Pinsent. Joe Clarke, Olympic champion. That
:24:11. > :24:14.sounds good, doesn't it? Oh, my God, I am absolutely made up, can't quite
:24:15. > :24:18.believe it. My words are probably going to come out in a big blur, so
:24:19. > :24:25.bear with me. It is an amazing feeling. There was a rumour about
:24:26. > :24:31.you in the semifinal, your coach had said hold back and get a steady run,
:24:32. > :24:39.was that right? Yes, I was on the pace all the way, just do an 85 run
:24:40. > :24:44.to get into the top ten. Just Fowler 50 in the first round, pushing a bit
:24:45. > :24:53.too hard. So held back and then push on for the medals. And for the
:24:54. > :24:58.final, it was something else again. Yeah, it was leave a little bit in
:24:59. > :25:05.the tank, but wow. What was it like waiting at the bottom of the run
:25:06. > :25:09.with two paddlers to come? It is nerve wracking, almost hoping they
:25:10. > :25:13.don't perform to their potential or just slot in behind you and do well.
:25:14. > :25:19.I can't control their performances, I just do my job and I did that and
:25:20. > :25:22.it was enough for the gold medal. There are dozens of people on the
:25:23. > :25:27.Lee Valley Centre watching on the big screen, a message for them?
:25:28. > :25:31.Cheers, guys, you are amazing, I will see you soon and we will have a
:25:32. > :25:36.big party. Congratulations, everyone at home is very proud of your
:25:37. > :25:42.achievement today. Thanks, everybody. Joe Clarke, another one
:25:43. > :25:47.who has recovered from a serious illness. Chris Froome, in a rain
:25:48. > :25:51.sodden time trial, he took bronze for the second Olympics in a row.
:25:52. > :25:55.The gold going to Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland. So Chris Froome with
:25:56. > :25:59.a bronze medal in the morning and little did we know when that
:26:00. > :26:04.happened that it would be the start of a medal rush and what has turned
:26:05. > :26:08.into a gold rush for Great Britain, and the double trap, a blondes medal
:26:09. > :26:12.for Steve Scott. He was absolutely perfect in his bronze medal shoot
:26:13. > :26:19.off against his team-mate Tim Kneale. And he is following in the
:26:20. > :26:27.tradition of Peter Wilson, who took gold in this event in the double
:26:28. > :26:32.trap in London. And not long after that, fantastic shot there from
:26:33. > :26:38.Steve Scott am not long after that, Sally Conway took a bronze medal in
:26:39. > :26:43.the judo. She had lost a very tight, tense semifinal but came back. She
:26:44. > :26:48.was determined to leave Rio with a medal and she does so, a bronze
:26:49. > :26:52.medal. Bronze fourth room, bronze for Scott and bronze for Conway and
:26:53. > :27:01.gold for Joe Clarke and also gold for Chris Mears and for Jack
:27:02. > :27:06.Laugher. -- bronze for Chris Froome. We will see the medal ceremony and
:27:07. > :27:09.hear from them both later in the programme. Let's see what that has
:27:10. > :27:16.done to Great Britain's position in the medal table. And it means that
:27:17. > :27:21.Great Britain life in ninth, level on three gold medals with Russia and
:27:22. > :27:26.Italy with three silvers. Two of them coming in the pool overnight.
:27:27. > :27:31.11 medals in total. It is getting towards a very healthy tally. And
:27:32. > :27:35.who knows, there could be more to come, because right at the moment,
:27:36. > :27:40.the men's all-around final in gymnastics is going on. It features
:27:41. > :27:45.Max Whitlock and Nile Wilson and this is what has happened so far.
:27:46. > :27:55.That was exciting stuff. We are going to start on floor with Nile
:27:56. > :28:02.Wilson. Here comes the power, double twist from full twist. In second at
:28:03. > :28:12.the moment. These gymnasts will be nervous and excited. Uchimura
:28:13. > :28:16.looking to retain this title. Max Whitlock with his first of six
:28:17. > :28:23.pieces of apparatus. He has done really well there. He goes into the
:28:24. > :28:28.lead. This is a gymnast who can certainly make it onto the podium.
:28:29. > :28:37.Made that bold statement that he would be the man to beat Uchimura.
:28:38. > :28:45.Absolutely vital this bolt. -- vault. Finishes off quite nicely. He
:28:46. > :28:52.has played safe. How impressive. You can see how much he has matured.
:28:53. > :28:57.What a find that was. Max Whitlock looks to be relaxed, looks to be
:28:58. > :29:03.enjoying himself. I was impressed with that. Nile Wilson did
:29:04. > :29:09.everything he could to stay on and stay in contention. Uchimura is
:29:10. > :29:19.ahead of Max Whitlock by a hair's-breadth. Lovely double twist
:29:20. > :29:23.and double back and when we say no deductions, that is what we mean.
:29:24. > :29:28.Beautifully performed, that was one of the best vaults I have seen him
:29:29. > :29:33.do for a while. CLARE BALDING: so there is all to
:29:34. > :29:37.play for. Max lead after the first rotation, he was second at the
:29:38. > :29:41.second rotation. He is still in medal contention, let's find out how
:29:42. > :29:49.he has been getting on and who is in the lead. Their to join Matt Baker,
:29:50. > :29:54.Christine still and Dan Keating is. MATT BAKER: We are waiting for a
:29:55. > :30:00.score from Uchimura, he has just done an incredible vault and now ban
:30:01. > :30:05.IVF is getting ready to go -- than I have.
:30:06. > :30:18.Uchimura goes ahead of Whitlock. What has Oleg Verniaiev got to
:30:19. > :30:24.offer? Uchimura, Whitlock and Oleg Verniaiev battling it out. He has
:30:25. > :30:31.two absolutely perform this perfectly to stay in contention. And
:30:32. > :30:38.he does, what a vault! What a tremendous performance. We have seen
:30:39. > :30:44.routine for routine, Uchimura does an absolute beauty and then of what
:30:45. > :30:52.a belter from Oleg Verniaiev. So difficult to land a vault like that.
:30:53. > :31:00.Uchimura this is unbelievable, the level of gymnastics going on here.
:31:01. > :31:07.This is perfect. Look at the height he gets. He spotted the landing.
:31:08. > :31:13.Where do you deduct from with the vault like that. In the air his
:31:14. > :31:20.knees are slightly apart and he is a little bit to the side, but he has
:31:21. > :31:29.managed to stay inside the lines. Will he go ahead of Uchimura? The
:31:30. > :31:40.tariff is 0.2 lower. He will need a little bit more. He does go ahead of
:31:41. > :31:46.Uchimura. Max Whitlock is over on parallel bars. He has not gone yet,
:31:47. > :32:02.so we will have to wait and see how things pan out as we go across to
:32:03. > :32:03.the high bar. Or stay on vault. He was in fourth, just outside of the
:32:04. > :32:22.medals going into this rotation. It is very close indeed. With the
:32:23. > :32:28.vault being so highly scored it makes such a difference. And another
:32:29. > :32:37.very high tariff add another triple twist. A stepped to the side, but
:32:38. > :32:41.really straight down the line. It was quite untidy in the air. He had
:32:42. > :32:49.bent legs coming into the landing, so he will not score as high as the
:32:50. > :32:53.others. Moreno was also in contention going into this piece.
:32:54. > :32:59.All gymnasts work every single one of the six pieces of apparatus and
:33:00. > :33:04.at the end it is the gymnast with the biggest score that counts. Keep
:33:05. > :33:09.your eye on difficulty because these days gymnasts get extra marks for
:33:10. > :33:15.doing harder routines and that is added to the execution. He is a very
:33:16. > :33:28.classy gymnast. Very nicely to hands down.
:33:29. > :33:58.Very well controlled. He makes it look easy. Pirouette skills.
:33:59. > :34:05.Two twists, really wonderful work we are seeing today. Look at that, a
:34:06. > :34:13.little clap of the hands and he is moving on. Two more pieces of
:34:14. > :34:23.apparatus for Calvo Moreno. He will go onto the floor and then finish on
:34:24. > :34:28.the pommel horse. The idea is to try and get every score over 15 if you
:34:29. > :34:33.want to be in the top flight. I know it seems obvious to say, but all of
:34:34. > :34:40.these gymnasts are right at the top of their game. We have seen them at
:34:41. > :34:47.World Championships six months ago and they have really lifted their
:34:48. > :34:53.performances. They only get a chance once every four years and they are
:34:54. > :34:58.not going to waste it. That is where the added pressure can come from as
:34:59. > :35:04.well. It is your one chance in four years and you have to perform right
:35:05. > :35:10.there, right then. That can be hard for some gymnasts to deal with. And
:35:11. > :35:16.with a piece like the vault, it is all over so quickly. As we saw
:35:17. > :35:25.earlier, if you overcook it, it is all over. He has been in and around
:35:26. > :35:34.the fifth spot for most of the competition. Another very good
:35:35. > :35:41.start. In the main the gymnasts are electing skills they can perform
:35:42. > :35:46.well. Most of them can probably do more difficult skills, but the
:35:47. > :35:51.secret is to be able to link them all together without loss of
:35:52. > :35:59.deductions. That was a lovely double twisting, double back somersault.
:36:00. > :36:13.That is the first step we have seen on landing.
:36:14. > :36:21.Choreographed to land rights in the corner so he can use the whole
:36:22. > :36:30.diagonal. A super 00 Arabian with a half turn in. He needs to finish
:36:31. > :36:37.well. Double twisting double back. A beautiful landing. He is really
:36:38. > :36:47.pushing himself up the ranks. That was a solid floor routine. And so we
:36:48. > :36:56.go to parallel bars and Max Whitlock who, as it stands, is 15.2 to four
:36:57. > :37:02.behind Uchimura. He has the potential to score around that kind
:37:03. > :37:20.of mark. Max Whitlock to stay in the medals. 15.220 four.
:37:21. > :37:27.A nice upper arms somersault with half turn. Another big double back
:37:28. > :37:41.between the bars. Into the front somersault to upper
:37:42. > :38:10.arms. A huge double pike. Oh! That was
:38:11. > :38:14.good, that was really nice. He has got an all-around Olympic medal in
:38:15. > :38:20.his sights. He has got two more pieces to go. That was a really
:38:21. > :38:25.controlled performance. You could see he gave everything, just enough.
:38:26. > :38:33.There was not much wrong with that. He kicked out on every move. Just
:38:34. > :38:43.the small step on the landing. It is one of the better bar routines I
:38:44. > :38:50.have seen him do. Up into that this man. A slight deduction on landing,
:38:51. > :38:55.but he is through. Well, 6.4 difficulty in qualification, so that
:38:56. > :39:04.means the maximum he could get would be 16.4. The deduction is of that.
:39:05. > :39:10.He has still got the very high-scoring flora to come. And a
:39:11. > :39:17.high bar routine to come. He is down just a little bit at 15. He is still
:39:18. > :39:25.in with a shout. I think he is roundabout third. If he is up there
:39:26. > :39:35.when it comes to his last piece, the floor, he has got a chance. Uchimura
:39:36. > :39:42.is in second place at the moment. There has been a lot of talk about
:39:43. > :39:46.whether he could retain this title. A lot of athletes look up to him so
:39:47. > :39:52.much and Max Whitlock is one of them. I am sure you are the same,
:39:53. > :39:59.Dan. Yes, he has changed gymnastics in my era. It is really good to see
:40:00. > :40:02.people get close to him now. I think the pressure is on in this
:40:03. > :40:08.competition, especially from Oleg Verniaiev. If you go to the high bar
:40:09. > :40:16.it is Uchimura's best and he will have to score big to try and take
:40:17. > :40:20.it. If Max Whitlock can manage to stay up there in the medals, it will
:40:21. > :40:27.be the first time that Great Britain have had an all-around medal for 108
:40:28. > :40:34.years. The gymnast called Walter Tysoe took silver in the all-round.
:40:35. > :40:45.I think it is fair to say that gymnastics has moved on quite a lot
:40:46. > :40:53.in 109 years. Max Whitlock is in that third placed spot. Oleg
:40:54. > :41:03.Verniaiev's lead will lift when he goes on to parallel bars. He can do
:41:04. > :41:09.a good 16.1. Right now he is trying to increase the gap to give him as
:41:10. > :41:15.much chance as possible. You can seem really trying to focus. He
:41:16. > :41:21.usually waves to the cameras, thumbs up, you can see he is really trying
:41:22. > :41:27.to maintain his focus, do his job. The hours of work that have gone
:41:28. > :41:32.into this, the sacrifice. We are talking over 35 hours training a
:41:33. > :41:37.week, just pounding your body. The all-around is very different to
:41:38. > :41:42.being a specialist, Dan. Pieces of apparatus and you have to focus on
:41:43. > :41:49.each individual apparatus all day, every day. If you slip up on one,
:41:50. > :41:59.you will not be a great all-round gymnast. Stand by for some fireworks
:42:00. > :42:08.with Chris Brooks from the USA. A lovely one armoured start.
:42:09. > :42:19.Lovely height, but he stalled slightly. It is the somersaults and
:42:20. > :42:29.the releases over the bar. These gymnasts catch so well on straight
:42:30. > :42:36.arms. That one was with a half turn. We have had somersaults overturned.
:42:37. > :42:42.A lovely dismount. He is really pumped for this. What a feeling that
:42:43. > :42:49.must be to nail a dismount after a routine like that. Yes, that is
:42:50. > :42:53.everything you want. If you hit your routine perfect, all you want to do
:42:54. > :43:00.is open up your dismount and stick it and that is what he did. Such a
:43:01. > :43:09.great feeling. A former world champion on parallel bars next ago
:43:10. > :43:11.in this all-around Olympic final. A huge under bar, just slightly off a
:43:12. > :43:36.handstand. Really controlled. A slight loss of
:43:37. > :43:43.form in his back in the handstand. Moving from one end to the other.
:43:44. > :43:44.Having a little rest with the half lever, making sure he composes
:43:45. > :44:04.himself for the rest of the routine. A double pike dismount. That is a
:44:05. > :44:13.really high start score and there was not much to do that. He is a
:44:14. > :44:15.class act. That turn into handstand where he just timed perfectly was so
:44:16. > :44:40.good. A lovely style with the somersaults
:44:41. > :44:54.between the rails. Super extension through the shoulders. That was in
:44:55. > :45:03.all the handstand phases. Flying through the area really, isn't it?
:45:04. > :45:15.There is that beautiful handstand shape. And because he is so high on
:45:16. > :45:20.the dismount he can land perfectly. Outside of the top three the next
:45:21. > :45:26.eight gymnasts are within a mark of each other. That is a big score for
:45:27. > :45:46.the high by. -- high bar. Chaopan Lin you've just waiting for
:45:47. > :45:57.his score on parallel bars. -- just waiting. Seems to be a little bit
:45:58. > :46:06.low. I thought it would have been up towards the 16 Mark but I guess they
:46:07. > :46:10.have deducted quite heavily. Kuksenkov, the Russian champion, had
:46:11. > :46:36.a shaky start on pommel horse. There is an under bark with half
:46:37. > :46:50.term and then a handstand -- under bark with half turn. Huge straddle
:46:51. > :46:58.front. He's through the main part of his routine now. Just managed to
:46:59. > :47:04.save that, looked slightly off-balance.
:47:05. > :47:15.Ready for a big this man. Huge double front half turn. Little bit
:47:16. > :47:22.of a wobble but overall, nicely done routine. Well, because of the fall
:47:23. > :47:28.that he had on pommel horse, he will not threaten, so as it stands, it is
:47:29. > :47:32.Oleg Verniaiev from Ukraine in the lead, head of Uchimura and Max
:47:33. > :47:36.Whitlock from Great Britain is in third with two pieces of apparatus
:47:37. > :47:43.to go in this men's all-around final. Every gymnast has six pieces.
:47:44. > :47:49.Total score decides who is the Olympic champion. This is going to
:47:50. > :47:56.be close, it is going to come down to the wire, it really is. It is
:47:57. > :48:03.unbelievable to see Uchimura being challenged, it is this close.
:48:04. > :48:09.And it really isn't that he has become weaker, Uchimura, it is the
:48:10. > :48:15.others have really pushed themselves up, isn't it? He is still going to
:48:16. > :48:21.score his 91. Like he has scored before, maybe a 92, but they have
:48:22. > :48:24.made the steps. And a perfect example is Max Whitlock on parallel
:48:25. > :48:30.bars and how he has been working in the gym, how to work on that
:48:31. > :48:35.difficulty in that routine. And he has added in quite a few double
:48:36. > :48:41.somersaults, which as of the difficulty. And this is one piece of
:48:42. > :48:46.apparatus where a lot of gymnasts score quite highly, so he has upped
:48:47. > :48:51.the difficulty and made sure he has stayed around the 50 mark. I mean,
:48:52. > :48:57.the plan for this Olympic final, when would that have started? Hold
:48:58. > :49:04.that thought, let's have a look at Nile Wilson on the ball. We know he
:49:05. > :49:10.has the power, does he have the execution -- on the vault. Goes
:49:11. > :49:27.double twist, beautifully performed. He needs it to be nearly perfect.
:49:28. > :49:36.This is Samuel Mikulak from the USA. Really good start. It is a big
:49:37. > :49:40.combination and he is the only one at this Olympic Games to do that
:49:41. > :49:46.move, the straddle front to catch underneath the bars.
:49:47. > :50:09.Ready for his dismount. That was really good. And that was a key
:50:10. > :50:15.routine for the US. It was key for them to help with that chose for the
:50:16. > :50:17.bronze medal in the team final, but it wasn't to be, so this is how
:50:18. > :50:30.things look at the moment. Chaopan Lin trying to get up into
:50:31. > :50:33.the medals. Samuel Mikulak, after that parallel bars routine, coming
:50:34. > :50:42.until 11. Nile Wilson after the vault is 14. -- into 11th.
:50:43. > :50:50.Kuksenkov, the Russian champion, in 16th at the moment.
:50:51. > :50:59.The Cuban and Cypriot gymnasts are no longer competing. So two pieces
:51:00. > :51:04.to go. It is a big one for Max Whitlock, he will be over on the
:51:05. > :51:07.high bar. As far as building the score is concerned for Oleg
:51:08. > :51:11.Verniaiev, parallel bars is absolutely vital. You can see Max
:51:12. > :51:16.Whitlock, currently in third, just getting a feel for the bar, making
:51:17. > :51:20.sure everything is absolutely right. We have talked about the amount of
:51:21. > :51:24.routines Max has been doing here in Rio and although they must be
:51:25. > :51:28.exhausting, he loves to get a feel for the kit. He does and training
:51:29. > :51:36.with Macs over the last few years, he is such a hard worker and he puts
:51:37. > :51:41.in one or two more goes than a lot of the other gymnasts in the gym. He
:51:42. > :51:46.loves to get a feel for it to make sure he is comfortable with the
:51:47. > :51:49.apparatus. And, Chris, Uchimura at the moment is in second, we are not
:51:50. > :51:55.used to seeing that but he has dealt with pressure in the past. He came
:51:56. > :51:57.off in the team final on the high bar for Japan at the last World
:51:58. > :52:02.Championships and did everything he could to get back in it. He has ups
:52:03. > :52:06.and downs that competitions and managers to put everything right by
:52:07. > :52:12.the finish. The high bar is the piece of apparatus we have seen him
:52:13. > :52:14.make mistakes on in the past and at this championships coming
:52:15. > :52:19.qualification, he fell from high bar, so he is vulnerable there, but
:52:20. > :52:24.it is interesting, we have never seen him under pressure like this,
:52:25. > :52:28.not where he has got to fight back. Well, not fight back, he hasn't done
:52:29. > :52:32.anything wrong but he knows he absolutely has to hit everything. He
:52:33. > :52:35.has always had a little bit to spare, it didn't matter if he made a
:52:36. > :52:40.little bit of an error or cut the difficulty back. He knows he can't
:52:41. > :52:45.do that tonight. I hate to say it, he was a little bit casual on pommel
:52:46. > :52:48.horse but maybe he will be kind of regretting the fact that he did and
:52:49. > :52:54.maybe go for it a little bit more in the early stages. Dan, what do you
:52:55. > :53:07.think? I think it is fine on pommel horse, he got a seven point to --
:53:08. > :53:11.with his easy routine, he got a 7.2. It was a wise choice. It was still a
:53:12. > :53:18.big score, huge score and I don't think he will regret that. How many
:53:19. > :53:24.options does he have on high bar with difficulty? He has just got to
:53:25. > :53:27.go for it on high bar. I think he has a start value of 6.7 and has to
:53:28. > :53:35.do everything in that routine to make sure he hits it. Well, on high
:53:36. > :53:38.bar, I am going to have a look and see what the order is going to be,
:53:39. > :53:47.because that is going to be vital. I will bring that to you at the Pablo
:53:48. > :53:56.Braegger on pommel horse. -- after. A slide stall on the middle. --
:53:57. > :54:03.slide stall. He has a nice swing. Moving from Handel to handle. Draws
:54:04. > :54:14.into the handstand, down to the scissor. Looks like he is struggling
:54:15. > :54:22.a little bit with his momentum. Into the dismount. Fell the wrong side.
:54:23. > :54:29.There will be a deduction there. He has tried to cover it up. A little
:54:30. > :54:33.wry smile and get a quick before anybody notices! I think the Swiss
:54:34. > :54:39.guys will be pleased to be in this top 24, to have two of them in the
:54:40. > :54:43.top 24 and, you know, they are very much a rising nation, wouldn't you
:54:44. > :54:47.say? They are, over the past few years, you have seen them getting
:54:48. > :54:51.better and better, more difficult routines. They are really becoming
:54:52. > :55:01.quite a good team, a good nation in gymnastics.
:55:02. > :55:13.Well, we are waiting for the score. Samuel Mikulak is over on the high
:55:14. > :55:17.bar at the moment, Max Whitlock will be after him. All eyes are on Oleg
:55:18. > :55:21.Verniaiev, we know he can score really highly on this piece of
:55:22. > :55:27.apparatus. He has had a couple of 16s here already, which is huge.
:55:28. > :55:32.This will be a vital, vital parallel bars routine for him, the most
:55:33. > :55:36.important of his career so far. Definitely. He needs to increase
:55:37. > :55:41.that gap going into high bar because he knows Uchimura can score big on
:55:42. > :55:48.the high bar. Well, after this piece, that's where they go and
:55:49. > :55:52.Uchimura will go before Verniaiev. So Verniaiev will finish off this
:55:53. > :55:58.meant's all-around final, but first, he has a job to do on parallel bars.
:55:59. > :56:03.And although he is a bit of an expert here, he obviously has a bit
:56:04. > :56:08.of risk as well. Two times European champion, former world champion,
:56:09. > :56:13.current European silver medallist. Well, he needs every tenth here.
:56:14. > :56:22.Verniaiev with his fifth piece of apparatus of six. There his is -- is
:56:23. > :56:29.his upper arm requirement, settling into his handstand. Nice under bar.
:56:30. > :56:32.He has managed the combination, that is the big part of his routine, to
:56:33. > :56:41.make sure he hits that for his difficulty on his score. Big tip out
:56:42. > :56:53.towards the end of the bars. Moving from one end to the other.
:56:54. > :57:06.Here comes the dismount. Can he now let? -- nail it? Almost perfect. The
:57:07. > :57:11.routine itself was flawless. Flawless. It is going to be very
:57:12. > :57:17.close to 16, if not over it, but that was your leader, at the moment.
:57:18. > :57:21.And he shows such virtuosity on parallel bars. Such confidence,
:57:22. > :57:27.really. I think I've felt more nervous than he looked. He just was
:57:28. > :57:31.so cool there. Yes, routine that difficult, he never seems to mess
:57:32. > :57:35.up. It is crazy how consistent he is on this piece of apparatus. It is
:57:36. > :57:43.the piece he really feels, doesn't he, from a youngster? Max Whitlock
:57:44. > :57:53.is chalked up and ready to go on high bar. In third position at the
:57:54. > :57:55.moment. Max Whitlock, on high bar. And this, a very big challenge for
:57:56. > :58:06.Max. First pirouetting element through.
:58:07. > :58:15.And the Mark Ilott with the half turn, swings out of it beautifully.
:58:16. > :58:20.Makes the join of the squad dislocation, needs to be precise on
:58:21. > :58:24.these pirouetting elements. Needs to get the hand cleanly and firmly on
:58:25. > :58:41.the bar. Another one and a half turn. Full
:58:42. > :58:49.macro turn. Here comes the dismount. Lifts, twists. Oh, yes! Well done,
:58:50. > :58:53.Max, what a performance! He is through, he is through with one more
:58:54. > :59:02.piece to go and the Olympic podium is not far away for Max Whitlock. A
:59:03. > :59:06.16.1 for Verniaiev going on too high bar. It is huge. Goodness me, how
:59:07. > :59:10.close this is going to be, Max Whitlock, with floor left to do,
:59:11. > :59:16.that high bar was the fifth of six pieces. And you know, some pieces,
:59:17. > :59:21.you are really at home on and Max, I won't say he has struggled but he
:59:22. > :59:27.has had to work very hard on high bar and you always wonder whether it
:59:28. > :59:31.is that peace where it will become unravelled under pressure but not at
:59:32. > :59:37.all, he was sensational under pressure there. Sensationally is the
:59:38. > :59:42.word. This was the piece I was most nervous for him. He fell in
:59:43. > :59:45.qualifications, he fell last year at the World Championships. As soon as
:59:46. > :59:54.he got through those release catch moves... Well, the focus now, he...
:59:55. > :59:59.His mind has been all over the place, when you think where he
:00:00. > :00:03.started, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars, the high bar done.
:00:04. > :00:16.Now he just has to focus on one routine and it is a good one for
:00:17. > :00:21.him. Look at that, 14.7. That is a good scar. -- score. He just has to
:00:22. > :00:26.stay composed, the floor is one of his best piece of apparatus. Just a
:00:27. > :00:32.focused. Uchimura will be the last gymnast to go on parallel bars.
:00:33. > :00:34.Verniaiev has done his job. All of his attention is now turned to high
:00:35. > :00:53.bar. Well, we are going to come off air
