:00:49. > :00:56.Good afternoon to you. Hello. A front has rumbled in off the
:00:57. > :01:02.Atlantic this morning here in Rio. It looks OK but I am afraid winter
:01:03. > :01:08.has hit. There is the proof. It is too windy I am afraid for rowing.
:01:09. > :01:13.For the second time, rowing is off will stop all the more of a shame
:01:14. > :01:17.because we were due to see the first two finals today. They will have to
:01:18. > :01:22.reschedule that. We will get a firm idea of how it will look in the next
:01:23. > :01:27.hour or so. That is when the new schedule will be out for the rowing,
:01:28. > :01:32.but it is off today. However, there is plenty of live sport going on.
:01:33. > :01:37.Not least, we are back in the saddle again for the time trials. We offer
:01:38. > :01:42.round Rio's rather treacherous roads again and yes, they will tackle some
:01:43. > :01:49.of those hills again. It is hard enough going up, but it is pretty
:01:50. > :01:54.treacherous going down again. But Britain's Emma Pooley cannot wait to
:01:55. > :01:57.tackle those hills. A renowned climber she has come out of
:01:58. > :02:04.professional cycling retirement for another crack at a medal. Olympic
:02:05. > :02:08.silver four years ago. Chris Froome is going to try and win the Tour de
:02:09. > :02:14.France and Olympic gold in the same summer. He will be joined by Geraint
:02:15. > :02:20.Thomas today. And whilst the rowing is delayed, we will still be on the
:02:21. > :02:24.water in canoe slalom with Joe Clarke in semifinal action this
:02:25. > :02:31.afternoon in the kayak single. That is his semifinal this afternoon. And
:02:32. > :02:35.this is our rather reject timetable between now and seven o'clock. Three
:02:36. > :03:00.items on it but they do take a fairly long time, it has to be said!
:03:01. > :03:08.The key moments, there are plenty of those our on programme. One of the
:03:09. > :03:13.great events in any Olympic Games, thoroughly looking forward to this
:03:14. > :03:18.one. After a bit of a taster in the gymnastics, it is the men's
:03:19. > :03:35.individual all-around gymnastics. Uchimura is the champion since 2009.
:03:36. > :03:40.Matt -- Max Whitlock and Nile Wilson will try and challenge him. And
:03:41. > :03:45.swimming with the individual medley, Michael Phelps having won 22nd gold
:03:46. > :03:53.medal last night, I note with interest he has taken over in the
:03:54. > :03:58.overall medal taken ill -- table in the Olympics to overtake Argentina.
:03:59. > :04:04.He is now only two medals behind Brazil on the overall countries
:04:05. > :04:09.list. That is extraordinary! He is up to 39th overall. Amazing! Final
:04:10. > :04:13.preparations are on going ahead of the road race this morning. I know
:04:14. > :04:18.Jill Douglas and Chris Boardman have bagged their place down there. It is
:04:19. > :04:22.a little bit blowy, windy and slicked on the roads. Tell us about
:04:23. > :04:28.the difference between the course they will tackle today versus the
:04:29. > :04:32.one they did at the weekend. There are some subtle differences. Good
:04:33. > :04:39.morning from a blowy coastal route this morning. One thing the cyclists
:04:40. > :04:42.would not have wanted to see when they look out of the window is rain.
:04:43. > :04:49.It is the enemy of the cyclist and wind, they do not like that either.
:04:50. > :04:55.We don't like anything! We like Sunny, smooth, calm and gentle but
:04:56. > :04:59.it is not like that today. Hazel was just asking about the difference on
:05:00. > :05:04.what we can expect on the course today compared with what we saw on
:05:05. > :05:10.the road race. Obviously, it is a significantly shorter route? It goes
:05:11. > :05:16.around the shorter circuit with a slight spare on the end to get them
:05:17. > :05:22.to and from it. They will face a slight headwind today. They are in
:05:23. > :05:28.jungle canopy for most of it. They go alongside the cobbled section we
:05:29. > :05:32.saw in the road race. There is a section of smooth tarmac. It is a
:05:33. > :05:36.bit sticky and there are some stones so we may see some punctures. Then
:05:37. > :05:42.there is the climb which is incredibly steep. That will take
:05:43. > :05:47.three or four minutes to cover. Then they tip over into a really steep
:05:48. > :05:52.descent with hairpins so they will have to be so careful today. Once
:05:53. > :05:59.they are either that, a big chunk of flat. A big road and a big descent
:06:00. > :06:07.as well. All in all, there is a bit less climbing than I was expecting.
:06:08. > :06:11.About 15% of the whole race is spent climbing. Not too technical either.
:06:12. > :06:21.Some of the bigger ride as you would think would not perform to well may
:06:22. > :06:26.actually claw back on the two rain. What will be teams and riders think
:06:27. > :06:34.this morning? What will they be doing to cope with the conditions?
:06:35. > :06:39.One of the things I would do, we saw the weather forecast, and I would
:06:40. > :06:43.have a set of wheels with road tyres on, not slick, direction or I can
:06:44. > :06:49.stay safe on the descent and make sure I can have the confidence to
:06:50. > :06:54.push hard on the steepest descent. Other than that, the setup will
:06:55. > :06:59.remain the same. A lot of caution called for specifically on that
:07:00. > :07:02.descent. The one thing you want is a level playing field for the
:07:03. > :07:09.cyclists. You don't want the conditions to change because it can
:07:10. > :07:12.have a huge influence on where the medals will go. You almost feel if
:07:13. > :07:17.it should rain, you want it to be damp for the whole race. It is
:07:18. > :07:20.cloudy and we have had rain overnight. I think it will probably
:07:21. > :07:25.stay wet. The wind might take it off a little bit. By and large, I think
:07:26. > :07:29.it will be the same conditions. It doesn't matter if it is raining, if
:07:30. > :07:36.the surface is wet, everyone will have to treat it the same way. We
:07:37. > :07:40.will see Chris Froome later in the men's race and Geraint Thomas. We
:07:41. > :07:46.have the women's race taking off reasonably soon. Emma Pooley riding
:07:47. > :07:50.for Great Britain. She has come out of retirement. She likes this
:07:51. > :07:55.course. The term dark horse has been used a lot for her. She has been
:07:56. > :08:00.doing some work with Lizzie Armistead. Climbing well, little bit
:08:01. > :08:04.less climbing than Emma would possibly have hoped for. I think we
:08:05. > :08:10.can assume that her form will be good. Not a big racing background
:08:11. > :08:17.this year. We haven't got lots of indicators but her pedigree says she
:08:18. > :08:21.is an outside bet for at least a medal. Some great names amongst the
:08:22. > :08:29.start list. Kristin Armstrong going for a third gold medal. The women's
:08:30. > :08:34.race will get going at around half past eight Rio time. You mentioned
:08:35. > :08:38.Kristin Armstrong, she will turn 43 tomorrow. She is aiming to win this
:08:39. > :08:42.time trial three times in Olympic history. Plenty of big names about
:08:43. > :08:47.to start pushing down that ramp shortly. I'm afraid the news is not
:08:48. > :08:54.so good. There is not much happening at label. I am not sure what our two
:08:55. > :08:59.Bond villains will be doing. Actually, Bond heroes, gentlemen! It
:09:00. > :09:03.is not a great day for sightseeing, John is that it is pretty mournful
:09:04. > :09:08.and grey down here. The only thing that brightens the horizon, isn't
:09:09. > :09:11.that classic timing, there were about 50 boats with bright yellow
:09:12. > :09:17.cagoule is behind us but they have now vanished. It is a mournful
:09:18. > :09:23.sight. Grey everywhere and we are not going to have any racing today.
:09:24. > :09:27.Understandably so, by the way, because they must have got a pretty
:09:28. > :09:31.austere weather forecast going forward. You can see what the
:09:32. > :09:36.conditions are like. Occasionally, you get these massive gusts of wind
:09:37. > :09:41.which almost blow you off your feet. I suspect this was a no-brainer.
:09:42. > :09:51.They inspected the course at 7:30am and at 7:31am they knew what the
:09:52. > :09:56.answer was. Be sailors will be happy today. When you look at those
:09:57. > :10:01.pictures, it is pretty obvious why it has been delayed again. It has
:10:02. > :10:07.been delayed twice, four more days to go, all final days. It will be
:10:08. > :10:11.interesting to see if we can get through the next few days. Do we
:10:12. > :10:16.assume we will be racing on Sunday and they will knock the schedule by
:10:17. > :10:22.one day? I don't think they will like to do that. We have lost two
:10:23. > :10:27.days in four. They would like to catch up and have the spare morning
:10:28. > :10:32.on Sunday. I gather they are talking about having a double hit on Friday,
:10:33. > :10:37.we are just hearing that in the last ten seconds or so, so presumably,
:10:38. > :10:41.they will move today's programme to tomorrow and then on Friday have a
:10:42. > :10:48.morning and an afternoon session. There were two finals today, men and
:10:49. > :10:54.women's wants and four finals for the last three days. They could be
:10:55. > :10:59.mixed and matching -- men and women's quods. I have no idea for
:11:00. > :11:04.the weather forecast for the rest of the week. It seems to vacillate. But
:11:05. > :11:09.the bottom line is, there ain't nothing happening here today. Thank
:11:10. > :11:16.you, gentlemen, that is a shame. A second day of rowing has been lost
:11:17. > :11:21.so we are in catch-up mode at Lego. We have heard about Emma Pooley
:11:22. > :11:25.coming out of professional cycling retirement to take part in this
:11:26. > :11:30.race. It is not as if she has been sitting with a cigar and her feet up
:11:31. > :11:35.on a lounger. She has been working hard because she is a professional
:11:36. > :11:41.triathlete and due at one rider. She has been busy since we last saw her
:11:42. > :11:45.at the Commonwealth Games. She is a renowned climber and was tipped the
:11:46. > :11:49.wink about this particular course and was persuaded to come out of
:11:50. > :11:55.retirement and she is very much looking forward to add to this
:11:56. > :12:04.silver event -- this event which she won in Beijing eight years ago. This
:12:05. > :12:08.is very different from London in terms of location and the course.
:12:09. > :12:14.And also because I left cycling for a bit to do long distance triathlon,
:12:15. > :12:21.I was not expecting to do this so I am really looking forward to it. In
:12:22. > :12:26.2014, after the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, I decided I wanted to
:12:27. > :12:32.try and have a serious go at long distance triathlon. It is difficult
:12:33. > :12:37.to combine them and do two sports at the top level is not easy, but
:12:38. > :12:41.actually, I always had at the back of my mind, the possibility of
:12:42. > :12:45.trying for Rio. I was quite careful to never say never. The thing that
:12:46. > :12:50.brought me back to cycling and to try for the Olympic team in Rio is I
:12:51. > :12:56.saw the course details and profile. It is released tough and it has some
:12:57. > :13:00.decent climbs in. That suits me as a rider. Having done more cycling this
:13:01. > :13:05.year, I have really enjoyed it. That might sound silly, I enjoy cycling
:13:06. > :13:08.but I enjoy racing and two years ago I was getting quite stressed about
:13:09. > :13:14.it and putting myself under the wrong kind of pressure. I have
:13:15. > :13:18.really enjoyed seeing old friends in the cycling world again. I have a
:13:19. > :13:22.very clear goal which is to go out there and give it everything and be
:13:23. > :13:27.the absolute best I can and that is all you can do in a time trial.
:13:28. > :13:32.There is no tactic, there is no one to interact with, you just do your
:13:33. > :13:37.best. Part of the preparation for me for a time trial is trying to
:13:38. > :13:41.exclude results orientated thinking. I cannot influence how the other
:13:42. > :13:45.riders go and obviously, they are very, very good. Worrying about that
:13:46. > :13:51.impacts negatively on performance so I am trying to focus on being the
:13:52. > :13:54.best I can, which is all any athlete can do.
:13:55. > :14:03.And this is the scene as we look down on the beautiful coastline on
:14:04. > :14:08.this wonderful part of Brazil. This is the situation, a few spots of
:14:09. > :14:12.rain on the lens. We are very close to these riders rolling down the
:14:13. > :14:19.ramp and the start of the women's time trial. They have about 30
:14:20. > :14:23.kilometres to ride and there are two very significant ascents and
:14:24. > :14:26.descents. The first rider ready to rock. Chris Boardman and Simon
:14:27. > :14:33.Brotherton looking forward to this one.
:14:34. > :14:41.Thanks, Hazel. We came to look at the course yesterday on a beautiful
:14:42. > :14:49.hot, sunny day. 24 hours later we are sitting on the finishing line
:14:50. > :15:01.under a large sheet of plastic on a dark, damp, stormy morning. It is
:15:02. > :15:05.damp at the moment. Anna Plichta is the first rider off from Poland. She
:15:06. > :15:10.rode in the road race at the weekend. The interesting thing is,
:15:11. > :15:17.Chris, the weather makes such a difference. Absolutely. Everybody
:15:18. > :15:22.has reviewed the course. We have seen this coming for about a week
:15:23. > :15:32.but ultimately, there is nothing you can do. You can see the first corner
:15:33. > :15:39.is extremely slippery. Everyone will have to take it cautiously.
:15:40. > :15:48.The majority of the course, I have to say, is quite nontechnical, good
:15:49. > :15:54.surface roads. The majority of the time the climbers will be safe.
:15:55. > :15:57.After the majority of the climb, there is a very steep and technical
:15:58. > :16:05.descent. Everyone will have to be very cautious. Three minutes, a very
:16:06. > :16:10.hard climb and sections with a one in four gradient. And then it tips
:16:11. > :16:22.over in media to the into that this went, taking them down into a good
:16:23. > :16:29.relatively straight road. This is Lotte Kepechy of Belgium. She is the
:16:30. > :16:33.national road trial champion of Belgium. She finished ninth in the
:16:34. > :16:38.big race on the Champs-Elysees in Paris which coincided with the end
:16:39. > :16:45.of the Tour de France. Good track rider as well, European junior
:16:46. > :16:50.champion. Lotte Kepecky now out on the wet roads around this circuit.
:16:51. > :16:55.Many of you may be wondering whether the descent which caused so many
:16:56. > :17:00.problems is on this circuit again today and the answer is no it's not.
:17:01. > :17:05.You may member there were two -- kits within the road race course
:17:06. > :17:10.which were linked by the coastal road. This is the first of the two
:17:11. > :17:17.circuits, so it's tough but actually not as treacherous as the other one
:17:18. > :17:21.was. No, it's actually very safe. Good service and good roads for the
:17:22. > :17:36.majority, probably about 50% of the entire race is climbing and
:17:37. > :17:45.descending, so the second descent of the climb is very fast. Grota Funda.
:17:46. > :17:50.Some of the riders will have they can road tyres for the course today.
:17:51. > :17:54.Road tyres would help to give confidence on some of these wet
:17:55. > :18:01.descents. This is a rider who we have seen do well on the roads of
:18:02. > :18:04.Britain. Nine times the national champion of Luxembourg in this
:18:05. > :18:11.particular discipline. She is a stage winner in the women's tour.
:18:12. > :18:14.She crashed out of the women's Giro earlier this summer, but a team-mate
:18:15. > :18:24.of Lizzie Armitstead during the season. The women, by the way, doing
:18:25. > :18:30.one lap of this circuit for a distance of 29.7 kilometres, safely
:18:31. > :18:40.negotiating that first corner. This is a little run out from the course.
:18:41. > :18:45.They go effectively in a sort of a sending order. In theory you have
:18:46. > :18:50.those fighting for the medals going out last. There is a first seed of
:18:51. > :18:53.what was the result in the last Olympic Games by country. In this
:18:54. > :19:02.case, Christine Armstrong was the winner, so she is at last. Also the
:19:03. > :19:07.commissars have the dispensation to fiddle with the start a bit or make
:19:08. > :19:13.sure the people go off towards the back. They try to leave the ride is
:19:14. > :19:23.very much alone on this race, racing against the clock. The Japanese
:19:24. > :19:31.rider the next to leave the start, Eri Yonamine. Not too long to wait
:19:32. > :19:35.for Emma Pooley. She is halfway through the field having come back
:19:36. > :19:39.to work in the Games, having retired from cycling after that silver medal
:19:40. > :19:45.in the time trial after the come on wealth games in Glasgow two years
:19:46. > :19:50.ago. Duathlon, triathlon, running, she's just an athlete to the court,
:19:51. > :19:55.Emma Pooley. That fitness has been while she has been away from the
:19:56. > :20:04.sport of cycling. I think Emma, as has been said several times, she is
:20:05. > :20:11.the dark horse for today. Not that a lot of racing to judge because she
:20:12. > :20:16.has been away from competition. Were you surprised with the amount of
:20:17. > :20:21.fairly flat road on this circuit as well? The vast majority is time
:20:22. > :20:26.trial territory. We just saw a picture, you can see that the roads
:20:27. > :20:36.are good and wide and very short as they go around the headland on the
:20:37. > :20:43.Atlantic coast. Still very steep but 150 metres long. This time they
:20:44. > :20:50.don't ride over the cobbles, a two metre wide tarmac section which they
:20:51. > :20:53.will use. There are some great and stones on it, I don't know if it has
:20:54. > :21:03.been swept. These conditions lubricated by water. The Norwegian,
:21:04. > :21:08.born in Latvia and spent a year in Norway at the age of 18, met her
:21:09. > :21:16.future husband, moved that and obtain citizenship. Only really
:21:17. > :21:20.began cycling at the age of 25, she is 31 now and here she is in the
:21:21. > :21:23.Olympic Games. Quite blustery for the riders out there, look at the
:21:24. > :21:29.Palm trees in the distance. Steadily taking that corner. They have to
:21:30. > :21:37.deal with the wind for a very short portion of the day's outing. It is
:21:38. > :21:42.the section where the cobbles are that you are really exposed to some
:21:43. > :21:48.potential crosswind and after that they are into jungle canopy a lot of
:21:49. > :21:52.the time. The foliage at the side of the road is giving adequate shelter
:21:53. > :22:01.to the riders. There's no getting away from it, is there, Chris, the
:22:02. > :22:05.fact that it is raining. It is dramatic conditions and certainly
:22:06. > :22:08.adds something to us for sure. But I rode quite a few races in these
:22:09. > :22:14.conditions and it's no fun as a rider because it's a sheer judgment
:22:15. > :22:21.call, you don't know whether there is any these along the road can you
:22:22. > :22:24.don't know what the conditions are. She is more of a sprinter actually,
:22:25. > :22:37.second on the course on the Chantilly Z -- on the Champs Elysees
:22:38. > :22:46.yard week. The only rider from Finland here riding on the road. So,
:22:47. > :22:54.half a dozen riders out on the course right now. Just over this
:22:55. > :22:58.band of cobbles which they are all being very careful about. The yellow
:22:59. > :23:04.flags are out, just to take them across to the main road which will
:23:05. > :23:12.see them out on the two kilometres to the circuit where Lotte Kepecky
:23:13. > :23:18.is now. Familiar sight, she was raiding an -- riding on her own on
:23:19. > :23:21.this circuit in the other race, having made the breakaway, putting
:23:22. > :23:30.up stubborn resistance until they caught up. Plichta, You can see the
:23:31. > :23:34.gradient is really starting to kick in here. It's only about 200 metres
:23:35. > :23:39.long and then they drop down to the cobbled section. But as we said,
:23:40. > :23:43.they are not going over the stones in this particular event. The one
:23:44. > :23:53.part of the circuit that concerns me today given the weather conditions
:23:54. > :24:01.is the first if -- first descent. Separated by two reasonably straight
:24:02. > :24:08.sections. Encouraging to let the speed build-up and then suddenly
:24:09. > :24:12.you're into another hairpin. Probably chastened somewhat by the
:24:13. > :24:19.amount of crashes we saw in the road race on that final descent. It's
:24:20. > :24:34.also earlier in the race than it was for the road race final as well. On
:24:35. > :24:36.the road now, the High-5 rider. She has looked far more comfortable than
:24:37. > :24:56.the others. Somebody who rides well in the rain
:24:57. > :25:01.makes a big difference. Not known for technical skill but form wife
:25:02. > :25:08.she is in great shape the moment. Now, Tara Whitten, the final few
:25:09. > :25:12.seconds before she heads off. A pretty rough time when she came out
:25:13. > :25:17.to Rio earlier in the year two recce the road racecourse and ended up
:25:18. > :25:23.riding into the back of a bus. Quite a serious injury act -- Syria's
:25:24. > :25:29.injury actually, a fracture to the skull. Two operations but she
:25:30. > :25:33.recovered well enough to be here. She took a break for almost three
:25:34. > :25:38.years after the London Olympic Games, she pursued a doctoral degree
:25:39. > :25:47.and came back and has made it into the Olympic Games once more. The
:25:48. > :25:52.national champion of Canada. We will be able to give you some information
:25:53. > :26:00.as the riders go around the course. We have got time checks, assuming
:26:01. > :26:03.everything is working well, ten kilometres, 19.7 kilometres, and of
:26:04. > :26:12.course at the finish. We will be able to get an idea of who is doing
:26:13. > :26:24.what. Just back with the rider from Luxembourg at the moment, Christine
:26:25. > :26:29.Majerus. A real course of extremes, this one. Those big wide roads for
:26:30. > :26:35.the time trialist, interspersed with these short, sharp lines. It's going
:26:36. > :26:39.to be a real all-rounder who wins today. I think to be honest the best
:26:40. > :26:43.place to look if you want to know who are the favourites is the road
:26:44. > :26:49.race result, because it is by and large a course for road racers. It
:26:50. > :26:53.is a good course and we will have a good winner, I reckon, as we follow
:26:54. > :26:57.Tara Whitten here as she splashes along the first couple of kilometres
:26:58. > :27:08.before heading to the first climb, which goes out on the headland.
:27:09. > :27:12.Katarzyna Niewiadoma from Poland, really exciting young talent. Silver
:27:13. > :27:21.medal in the European games and the best young rider of the last couple
:27:22. > :27:25.of years at the women's Giro. Six at the weekend in the road race. How
:27:26. > :27:30.will she fare in this different discipline? You can see the
:27:31. > :27:37.different riders going around, comfortable in the wet and maybe
:27:38. > :27:51.half a second in a single turn, that will add up to about 20 or 25
:27:52. > :27:56.seconds. It's interesting, we saw Audrey Cordon come around and a lot
:27:57. > :28:01.of her good results have been when the weather has not been great and
:28:02. > :28:06.the wind can be a factor. The wind is certainly getting up a bit here
:28:07. > :28:09.at the finish line at the moment. It is gusting up and down. I was
:28:10. > :28:15.interested to see whether every rider would opt to use rear disc
:28:16. > :28:22.wheels for this event but some have opted to go spoke front and back.
:28:23. > :28:28.There is an aerodynamic disadvantage for that but you would gain in
:28:29. > :28:31.confidence. The 20 seconds you may lose on aerodynamics, you could gain
:28:32. > :28:37.that back in the ability to handle the bike cannot get pushed around by
:28:38. > :28:51.the wind. The women's Road race champion from last year, lives in
:28:52. > :29:02.Italy, from Belarus. Form good going into these Olympic Games. Such a
:29:03. > :29:10.shame that they can't go more into this time trial today because of the
:29:11. > :29:16.treacherous conditions. The pacing strategy is quite interesting. The
:29:17. > :29:21.climbs are followed immediately by a descent which means you can ride
:29:22. > :29:25.into the red and really push hard on the climbs because you can't keep
:29:26. > :29:33.the pressure on the pedals for the descent. Getting round the corners
:29:34. > :29:38.in an upright position, you're flying on the seat of your pants
:29:39. > :29:43.because of the treacherous nature of the roads. It may be a case of get
:29:44. > :29:49.the power down while you can today. Steady rhythm here from Tara
:29:50. > :29:54.Whitten. And here now is Emma Pooley. It looks as if they're
:29:55. > :29:58.struggling to hold her up. The wind is blowing strongly where she is.
:29:59. > :30:02.There is the face of somebody who's going to go for it here. You can see
:30:03. > :30:06.the pent-up aggression, just ready to get this thing under way and a
:30:07. > :30:10.bit of a steady start there. A problem with gears by the look of
:30:11. > :30:14.it, straight out of the gate. Took her a few seconds to get sorted. Not
:30:15. > :30:15.quite the start she was looking for but Emma Pooley is away and on the
:30:16. > :30:26.road in her bid for Olympic glory. she was the silver medallist in
:30:27. > :30:32.Beijing eight years ago in the women's time trial. Can she go one
:30:33. > :30:38.better this year? She was also here to work for Lizzie Armistead at the
:30:39. > :30:42.weekend in the road race. That was possibly the steadiest corner we
:30:43. > :30:45.have seen so far in this event. A look there to see what is the
:30:46. > :31:07.problem with Emma's bike. That is Eri Yonamine from Japan. She
:31:08. > :31:11.is able to avoid the cobbled section. There is a corner which is
:31:12. > :31:17.quite sharp and the narrowness of the road does have an impact on the
:31:18. > :31:29.riders' styles because they do not have much room to manoeuvre.
:31:30. > :31:35.Karol-ann Canuel of Canada. Away she goes from the start of's ramp. A
:31:36. > :31:43.decent record as a time trialist. The third in a race last year. She
:31:44. > :31:48.will do well to trouble the top of the leaderboard come race end today.
:31:49. > :31:53.Some of the favourites are still warming up, getting ready. Anna van
:31:54. > :31:57.der Breggen, already with a gold medal in her pocket from the
:31:58. > :32:03.weekend, from that very dramatic road race. And here is Emma Pooley
:32:04. > :32:08.of Great Britain. Certainly in her stride now. This is a fast section
:32:09. > :32:16.of the course. There is a slight left in a few hundred metres time
:32:17. > :32:21.which takes them into the circuit. Emma Pooley has a great pedigree. It
:32:22. > :32:27.is not just the Olympic silver medal from eight years ago. She was the
:32:28. > :32:36.world champion in Australia in 2010. The second of the Dutch riders now,
:32:37. > :32:41.Ann-sophie Duyck was about to head off into the wind. A very Shari
:32:42. > :32:47.morning now. I don't think it is raining at the moment. It is hard to
:32:48. > :32:58.tell under our plastic sheet. She is covered in droplets of water.
:32:59. > :33:13.She has won a couple of time trials this year on the women's calendar.
:33:14. > :33:26.And the national champion of Belgium. Anna Plichta meanwhile, the
:33:27. > :33:34.first rider out on the course. Starting the climb of Grota Funda.
:33:35. > :33:44.It is one in four, 20 5% for a few seconds. Quite remarkable. Then a
:33:45. > :33:50.dip and back up again here. Actually, she is over the top. Now
:33:51. > :33:57.then, this is a very technical descent. It would be nice to stay
:33:58. > :34:03.with her to see how she is able to handle the descent, but instead, we
:34:04. > :34:08.go back to the wide, windswept area where Christine Majerus from
:34:09. > :34:14.Luxembourg is. There is no protection from the elements on this
:34:15. > :34:22.stretch, the other flat part of the course. The wind is blowing off the
:34:23. > :34:31.Atlantic stop the wind is not having too much of an impact. Trixi Worrack
:34:32. > :34:36.of Germany. She was a silver medallist in the World Championship
:34:37. > :34:43.a decade ago. Quite a major player in the women's road race at the
:34:44. > :34:47.weekend, riding very, very strongly. It is great to see Trixi Worrack
:34:48. > :34:52.racing again. She had a horrible crash in one of the World Cup
:34:53. > :35:00.matches in the spring. She needed emergency surgery and lost a kidney.
:35:01. > :35:01.She began racing again in June. Clearly riding well from what we saw
:35:02. > :35:16.at the weekend. Lotte Kopecky from Belgium. It is
:35:17. > :35:21.hard to tell how these riders are going because they have not gone
:35:22. > :35:26.through any time checks out the moment. Anna Plichta was the only
:35:27. > :35:29.one. With yesterday's conditions I thought it would take 45 minutes to
:35:30. > :35:37.complete this course, for the good riders. Foot out. That is a
:35:38. > :35:44.standard, I've overcooked it slightly. Get the foot out to try
:35:45. > :35:49.and mitigate things if it does happen. Already, you can see the
:35:50. > :35:53.conditions here have changed things completely. It would be great to
:35:54. > :36:00.stay with one or two of the riders on that dissent because it would be
:36:01. > :36:07.important. I would not like to be a motorcycle cameraman, would you? No.
:36:08. > :36:26.Katrin Garfoot from Australia. Our makeshift tent is threatening to
:36:27. > :36:34.take off here. If you hear some flapping in the background, that is
:36:35. > :36:38.what it is. She was a bronze medallist in the Commonwealth Games,
:36:39. > :36:53.Katrin Garfoot. We are now riding with Tara Whitten. Riding strongly.
:36:54. > :36:59.We are not seeing any weaving across the road, there is no buffeting. I
:37:00. > :37:12.think they have largely a headwind on that section, the wind has come
:37:13. > :37:17.around. Christine Majerus is noticeably slower than Anna Plichta
:37:18. > :37:23.on this part of the course. It encourages you to let the speed
:37:24. > :37:35.build and suddenly, there is a stronger bend. It looks like the
:37:36. > :37:41.rider from Finland is being caught by Tara Whitten. I would say she
:37:42. > :37:47.must have had a problem to be caught so quickly. Actually, it is Audrey
:37:48. > :37:50.Cordon. She must have had a problem. There is no reason for her to have
:37:51. > :37:57.been caught by Tara Whitten so quickly. It is a lonely place, the
:37:58. > :38:03.time trial. You would know that, Chris. Being anti-social, it was my
:38:04. > :38:15.favourite place to be, on my own! They call it the race of truth for a
:38:16. > :38:21.reason. No hiding place. If it was a mechanical crash or some sort of
:38:22. > :38:26.incident, we will be able to see shortly, because Audrey Cordon now
:38:27. > :38:35.has Tara Whitten as an incentive. At the moment Whitten is riding away
:38:36. > :38:44.here. That is very surprising. It does not look as if Audrey Cordon
:38:45. > :38:51.has had a crash. We missed the rider from South Africa entering the
:38:52. > :38:56.course. This is Elisa Longo Borghini from Italy. She was third in the
:38:57. > :39:01.time trial in the Gia Roe and that was a hilly one so I think we could
:39:02. > :39:06.expect something from her -- G a row. She comes from a sporting
:39:07. > :39:17.family. Her mother competed in cross-country skiing at the Olympic
:39:18. > :39:23.Games three times. And her brother was a professional cyclist as well
:39:24. > :39:29.for a number of years. But a really good rider in her own right. The
:39:30. > :39:33.winner of the tour of Flanders last year and the Philadelphia classic.
:39:34. > :39:38.One of the best riders in the women's peloton. And back with Tara
:39:39. > :39:43.Whitten who is really powering around the circuit. She has moved
:39:44. > :39:48.away from the coast and is rolling towards the bottom of that Grumari
:39:49. > :39:52.climb. 1.2 kilometres in length. Hopefully we will be able to stay
:39:53. > :39:58.with it so we can give you an indication of the severity of the
:39:59. > :40:04.climb. About four minutes of climbing in total because of its
:40:05. > :40:06.severity. And followed by the biggest challenge of the day, the
:40:07. > :40:22.technical descent. Waiting to get going. She is a
:40:23. > :40:25.former Commonwealth champion. She went well at the weekend. She rode
:40:26. > :40:55.well in the time -- road race. Hanna Solovey is capable of doing a
:40:56. > :40:59.good race. She lost her job with her team last year, with the Cadillac
:41:00. > :41:05.team and Ukraine federation claimed it was because she did not want to
:41:06. > :41:09.switch to her nationality of Kazakhstan for the Olympic Games,
:41:10. > :41:15.but she found herself another team. Now we're riding behind Emma Pooley.
:41:16. > :41:21.I don't think she will be enjoying this particular bit of the course. A
:41:22. > :41:29.very high style of riding since the start, Emma Pooley. Probably about
:41:30. > :41:34.110 rpm which is very high therefore a time trialist. I am wondering if
:41:35. > :41:42.anything has forced that or is it is a chosen style. Quite unusual. The
:41:43. > :41:47.fastest rider so far, as we watch the former world champion Ellen Van
:41:48. > :41:54.Dijk preparing to leave the start behind and head off to cover the
:41:55. > :42:03.29.7 kilometre course. Not one of the best climbers in the world but
:42:04. > :42:08.on great form at the moment. I think she is going to sniff the potential
:42:09. > :42:14.for a win. She will go well on the flat road. She does not mind these
:42:15. > :42:20.conditions. No problems with cobbles. I think she could do
:42:21. > :42:26.something today. She won the time trial stage in a big stage race
:42:27. > :42:31.recently. She finished third overall in that. But showed her form coming
:42:32. > :42:37.into the Olympic Games. We saw how strong she was in the Olympic Games
:42:38. > :42:44.-- at the weekend as well. And here is Tara Whitten coming up to the
:42:45. > :42:49.first time check. She will be the fastest rider. That is no surprise.
:42:50. > :42:53.We thought she would be the early leader. Healthy lead it is as well,
:42:54. > :43:04.one minute and nine seconds to the good. Wisely taking it cautiously as
:43:05. > :43:09.the road tips over. Let's hope the camera stays with her and we can
:43:10. > :43:14.give you an idea of just how treacherous a descent it is. Forced
:43:15. > :43:19.to cross these lines in the centre of the road. Trying hard not to
:43:20. > :43:31.cross them. Evelyn Stevens now from the United States.
:43:32. > :43:38.She is another major player in the women's peloton. With three stages
:43:39. > :43:50.and second overall and the King of the Mountains Crown earlier this
:43:51. > :43:59.year. Another team mate of Lizzie Armistead. She was 12 in the road
:44:00. > :44:10.race and I think she will be disappointed with that. Audrey
:44:11. > :44:25.Cordle and not having a great time so far.
:44:26. > :44:31.Well, this is the footage of Tara Whitten that we've just seen,
:44:32. > :44:37.actually. Another shot of her going over the top. Here is Emma Pooley,
:44:38. > :44:41.approaching the climb. The area of the cause she will feel most at home
:44:42. > :44:43.at. One or two parts of the course where she will really need to press
:44:44. > :44:58.home any advantage. Olga Zabelinskaya from Russia.
:44:59. > :45:12.Bronze medallist in London four years ago, in this event and in the
:45:13. > :45:30.road race, actually. 36 years of age now.
:45:31. > :45:36.Here is Katarzyna Niewiadoma. You can push on here. Already taken off
:45:37. > :45:45.the glasses, folded up on the helmet, finding it tough. Slower
:45:46. > :45:48.than her team-mate, Anna Plichta. Considerably so. Considerably slower
:45:49. > :45:55.than Tara Whitten, the fastest so far.
:45:56. > :46:06.Here is Elisa Longo Borghini from Italy. Still early days for her.
:46:07. > :46:10.She's still on the Coast Road, has got to the cobbled section yet.
:46:11. > :46:14.We're going to keep referring to it as bad just as an identifier,
:46:15. > :46:18.despite the fact that they don't actually touch the stones
:46:19. > :46:22.themselves. What a difference a day makes. Yesterday those beaches
:46:23. > :46:25.looked absolutely spectacular. Lisa Brennauer, the world champion from a
:46:26. > :46:29.couple of seasons ago and had a great season last year, won the
:46:30. > :46:34.women's tour in the UK. Not quite so strong in terms of results this year
:46:35. > :46:41.but showed her face at the front of the peloton in the road race at the
:46:42. > :46:53.weekend. She's not at her best, 19th I think in the road race. Not on top
:46:54. > :47:00.of her form. Yes, she was... Here is Emma Pooley once more come on one of
:47:01. > :47:05.the Stieber sections. -- steeper sections. Just dancing away there,
:47:06. > :47:15.one of the lighter riders in this race, not the lightest, but climbing
:47:16. > :47:18.out of the saddle. You can see here, even when you are a very good rider
:47:19. > :47:23.like Emma Pooley, it's slow progress. When she retired, she was
:47:24. > :47:29.widely thought of as the best climber in the world, so this is the
:47:30. > :47:37.section of the course where she will feel most at home. The second climb
:47:38. > :47:47.of the two is longer, nearly twice as long, but the radiant is not as
:47:48. > :47:56.steep. We saw the clock just ticking away, not the fastest time for Emma
:47:57. > :48:01.Pooley, she will be disappointed by that because this is the area where
:48:02. > :48:05.she should have the advantage. Most of the favourites are still haven't
:48:06. > :48:09.gone through the first time check. Turned into that very early and
:48:10. > :48:12.everybody trying to avoid the white line, or in this case, the yellow
:48:13. > :48:20.line in the centre of the road but inevitably it needs to be crossed if
:48:21. > :48:25.you want to use the full width. Looking for the next rider on the
:48:26. > :48:31.road which should be Karol-Ann Canuel from Canada. It may be a
:48:32. > :48:36.while before we get a sight of her. Tara Whitten once more, our leader
:48:37. > :48:42.on the road at the moment. A strong ride if she has put 33 seconds in
:48:43. > :48:47.the first chunk of this course into a rider of Emma Pooley's calibre,
:48:48. > :48:52.who was here hunting for a medal, a sizeable gap at this level. Tara
:48:53. > :48:56.Whitten we're seeing, Commonwealth Games champion in 2010 in Delhi, she
:48:57. > :49:04.won the silver medal in this event in the Pan American Games last year
:49:05. > :49:08.in Toronto as well. Not the lowest oppositions but certainly looks
:49:09. > :49:11.comfortable. Good cadence, there. These roads ever so slightly wind
:49:12. > :49:17.back and forward for seven kilometres between the two climbs.
:49:18. > :49:25.Good that this all the way. Staying on those bars for the inside time
:49:26. > :49:36.between the climbs. Here is the world champion from New Zealand,
:49:37. > :49:40.Linda Williams all -- lender will Helmes. Her form looked very good,
:49:41. > :49:47.she looked very comfortable in that road race at the weekend, I thought.
:49:48. > :49:51.-- Linda Villumsen. Her performance in the road race, she is not known
:49:52. > :49:57.as a climber but she performed extremely well in the road race.
:49:58. > :50:00.Secondly, when I actually saw the course yesterday and saw not the
:50:01. > :50:07.climbs but the terrain between them, I thought they were perfectly suited
:50:08. > :50:12.to Linda Villumsen. Is aiming today to become only the second woman to
:50:13. > :50:18.add an Olympic title to her world crown, as a reigning world champion.
:50:19. > :50:22.She stepped away from riding in Europe and she is largely based in
:50:23. > :50:26.America right now. We don't have a lot of indicators, she has not
:50:27. > :50:28.ridden against a knot of the riders here. That 23rd in the road race
:50:29. > :50:45.shows that she can hold her own. Anna Plichta through the second
:50:46. > :50:50.check now, at 19.7 kilometres. She has set the mark to beat. It looks
:50:51. > :50:54.like it will be running a bit slower than we estimated in the conditions
:50:55. > :51:00.yesterday. Kristin Armstrong, looking for a hat-trick of Olympic
:51:01. > :51:08.titles. Back-to-back in this event. A winner in both Beijing and London.
:51:09. > :51:13.42 now, she will be 43 tomorrow. The most experienced rider in the field,
:51:14. > :51:17.isn't she? Both men and women. She retired from cycling a couple of
:51:18. > :51:21.times but came back last year and certainly again was able to pull the
:51:22. > :51:28.peloton along in the women's Road race at the weekend. Saw Armstrong
:51:29. > :51:33.out on the course yesterday. It looked like hot, hard work for her
:51:34. > :51:39.on the Grota Funda climb at the time. Conditions could hardly be
:51:40. > :51:42.more different at the moment. Fifth in last year's time trial in the
:51:43. > :51:46.World Championships but with a pedigree like hers, she cannot be
:51:47. > :51:57.ruled out for a podium position today. Ellis Longo Baldini is still
:51:58. > :52:01.some way away from that first time check but 13 riders from the field
:52:02. > :52:09.have gone through and Tara Whitten is still the fastest. At the moment,
:52:10. > :52:10.Emma Pooley went through half a minute behind. -- Elisa Longo
:52:11. > :52:27.Borghini. Back with the second of the Belgian
:52:28. > :52:36.riders, Ann-Sophie Duyck. Just come down the dissent off the Grumari
:52:37. > :52:43.climb. With her experience, she spotted something was trying not to
:52:44. > :52:50.touch painted surface. That is what the road looks like, you can see a
:52:51. > :52:58.head Fred leased seven kilometres. We're looking at Ann-Sophie Duyck..
:52:59. > :53:09.Lotte Kopecky is further along the road.
:53:10. > :53:21.The road surface is good throughout on this time trial course. Clearly
:53:22. > :53:29.relayed for it and very smooth. I liked the fact that we have a little
:53:30. > :53:31.bit of everything. Technical skill but also pure physical ability
:53:32. > :53:47.required today. Well, Ann-Sophie Duyck was well
:53:48. > :53:51.down, three quarters of a minute slower than Tara Whitten, going
:53:52. > :53:58.through the first time check. I don't think she's going to be a
:53:59. > :54:13.factor today. Here is pristine matcher is -- here is Christine
:54:14. > :54:22.Majerus, a bit slower than Anna Plichta but the same time as Lotte
:54:23. > :54:25.Kopecky in front of her. Eri Yonamine of Japan, sets the second
:54:26. > :54:33.fastest time for the moment. Back on the climb now with Elisa Longo
:54:34. > :54:38.Borghini. If ever there was a course favouring the road rider, I think
:54:39. > :54:44.this is it and she will like this terrain. Already a medallist here.
:54:45. > :54:52.In the road race. Driving up this climb. Ellen van Dijk. She looked
:54:53. > :54:55.really fired up for this and I know you would expect her to with it
:54:56. > :55:01.being the Olympic Games, but sometimes you can see it on their
:55:02. > :55:05.faces and I think van Dyck really set on performing here. This is the
:55:06. > :55:11.part of the course where she needs to take every advantage. There is a
:55:12. > :55:16.lot of road here that is well suited to Ellen van Dijk and I think she
:55:17. > :55:21.spotted the opportunity. Everyone talks about it being a climber's
:55:22. > :55:24.course but only about 50% of this race is spent climbing and
:55:25. > :55:34.descending. She's good on the downhill parts, for sure, one of the
:55:35. > :55:41.best in the world. Ashleigh Moolman from South Africa, a really good
:55:42. > :55:45.rider herself. The closest so far to Tara Whitten. Roughly a third of the
:55:46. > :55:51.way through the course now. Very much in touch and pushed over the
:55:52. > :55:54.top there, probably one of the quickest if not the quickest rider
:55:55. > :56:01.we have seen starting on the dissent. That could make a
:56:02. > :56:06.difference today, technical skill. This will be interesting, how close
:56:07. > :56:12.to the top is Elisa Longo Borghini here? That little lump in the back
:56:13. > :56:16.of the skin suit as you can see is a radio, they are getting time checks.
:56:17. > :56:21.They will know she has been the fastest rider and she is, six
:56:22. > :56:27.seconds ahead of Tara Whitten at the moment. Excellent start from Elisa
:56:28. > :56:33.Longo Borghini of Italy. She will need to take it a little more
:56:34. > :56:37.cautiously along -- the longer this dissent runs, because it does get
:56:38. > :56:42.tighter. Braving the line in the centre of the road by trying as hard
:56:43. > :56:46.as possible to take it on a sharp angle, spending the minimum amount
:56:47. > :56:51.of time on it on gaining the width of the road. Switching back to Ellen
:56:52. > :57:00.van Dijk, who is now well into that climb. It will be addressing to see
:57:01. > :57:05.where she is at... Oh! A momentary lapse in attention and off the edge
:57:06. > :57:12.of the road. Well, what a disaster there. Just missed it, just wasn't
:57:13. > :57:24.looking. Tried to keep it an ace -- as tight a line as possible. She was
:57:25. > :57:26.into the scrub there. It looked so innocuous for Ellen van Dijk, that
:57:27. > :57:31.was the last place you would expect her to a problem. If you're going to
:57:32. > :57:35.come a cropper on this course can do it on the climbs, that is for sure.
:57:36. > :57:41.But that has broken her rhythm and just as she gets to the foot of the
:57:42. > :57:45.climb... Well, what a surprise. Just a slight wobble, found herself too
:57:46. > :57:57.close to the edge and couldn't correct wait to police to. I to you
:57:58. > :58:02.-- to pull it back. An unexpected stop at the side of the road for
:58:03. > :58:06.Ellen van Dijk. If she has to climb not her favourite terrain but this
:58:07. > :58:12.would be what she would choose, short and sharp, get it out of the
:58:13. > :58:16.way, power up most of it. That was a real shocker, there. You don't see
:58:17. > :58:20.those very often. Sticking towards the centre of the road now. She
:58:21. > :58:25.certainly fared well enough on those short couple climbs in Belgium
:58:26. > :58:30.during her career. Elisa Longo Borghini is the fastest rider so far
:58:31. > :58:37.to have gone through the first time check. Only six riders have gone
:58:38. > :58:43.through the second time check, and Eri Yonamine... Tara Whitten has
:58:44. > :58:49.just gone through, miles quicker than the other six who have gone
:58:50. > :58:57.through. And I mean she's a long way ahead in terms of time, the second
:58:58. > :59:01.fastest of the seven who have gone through. Armstrong looking good on
:59:02. > :59:08.the coastal road. She comes to the first little blip, 200 metres of 15%
:59:09. > :59:13.and then straight down alongside the cobbled section for the Grumari
:59:14. > :59:21.climb. Ellen van Dijk doing her best to power her way over the top, she
:59:22. > :59:25.is catching someone here. Cars and motorbike taken out, Ellen van
:59:26. > :59:31.Dijk... I tell you what, if she is within 20
:59:32. > :59:37.seconds and you consider that she spent that time off the bike, she is
:59:38. > :59:43.on a par with the other riders. That may end up at the end of the day
:59:44. > :59:47.costing her very dearly. But she has quite a long, fairly flat section to
:59:48. > :59:54.come once she gets to the bottom of this dissent.
:59:55. > :00:02.This is evil in Stevens from the United States. Not known to be a
:00:03. > :00:03.good descender but known to be one of the best climbers -- Evelyn
:00:04. > :00:17.Stevens. Really pushing hard. Some of these
:00:18. > :00:29.corners, as I mentioned earlier, 24%, 25% for a few metres, averaging
:00:30. > :00:34.about 13 for a lot of this climb. They are very familiar with this
:00:35. > :00:43.course as they covered a couple of laps as part of the road race at the
:00:44. > :00:48.weekend. No nasty surprises. But it is says the pier at the bottom.
:00:49. > :00:56.Stephen is fighting her way up the climb. Luckily, the rain staying
:00:57. > :01:02.away at the moment. It is still a greasy road surface. Another factor
:01:03. > :01:07.to take into account is some of these riders choose to bail early or
:01:08. > :01:13.ride into the finish on the final climb in the road race, others like
:01:14. > :01:23.Evelyn Stevens fought all the way to the line. Well, she is off the pace
:01:24. > :01:28.now, that is the shore. That is a little bit surprised when. I thought
:01:29. > :01:35.she would be closer to Elisa Longo Borghini than this. She is quite a
:01:36. > :01:41.way off the pace, especially when you consider she has not been in the
:01:42. > :01:49.saddle for long. Evelyn Stevens' time will be a minute slower than
:01:50. > :01:57.the Italian rider. What a ride by Elisa Longo Borghini. An interesting
:01:58. > :02:05.character, Evelyn Stevens. She used to work as an investment banker at
:02:06. > :02:11.Lehman Brothers. She left before the crash to work on her cycling career.
:02:12. > :02:17.She has certainly had considerable success on two wheels. She turned
:02:18. > :02:22.into that bend very early there. The ride is just getting down this
:02:23. > :02:25.descent as best they can as we switch back to Ellen Van Dijk, who
:02:26. > :02:39.is back on the two rain that she loves back. I presume that must be
:02:40. > :02:45.Hanna Solovey she is closing on. Hanna Solovey is a former silver
:02:46. > :02:50.medallist in this race. Here is an Plichta from Poland coming into the
:02:51. > :02:57.finish. The first out on the course and the first over the line. Here
:02:58. > :03:05.she comes, with 100 metres to go. The first to put her time up on the
:03:06. > :03:11.leaderboard, 47 minutes and 59.66 seconds, the time for the rider from
:03:12. > :03:15.Poland. She will forever be able to say to children and grandchildren, I
:03:16. > :03:22.remember when I led the Olympic time trial. They have a little area where
:03:23. > :03:27.the top 36. They have some nice beach lounging chairs under a cover
:03:28. > :03:34.and a little marquee, and they sit in the hot seat until bedtime is
:03:35. > :03:38.beaten. Plichta may just about have time to sit down, but she shouldn't
:03:39. > :03:47.get too comfortable. Ellen Van Dijk about to catch Hanna Solovey.
:03:48. > :03:52.Driving along, making the most of every metre of this part of the
:03:53. > :03:58.course which suits her so well. It is quite a long stretch between
:03:59. > :04:04.these two climbs. Going through on the inside. Everything to take the
:04:05. > :04:08.shorter route. She is taking it to the limit. I hope she is able to put
:04:09. > :04:17.that stumble behind her. And Napoleon from Great Britain. -- Emma
:04:18. > :04:23.Pooley from Great Britain. She is nearly 40 seconds down on the best
:04:24. > :04:28.time from the first check. Lotte Kopecky from Belgium. The second
:04:29. > :04:33.rider to reach the finish at the 20-year-old. I think we will hear
:04:34. > :04:39.more of her in the years to come if she keeps going with her cycling. A
:04:40. > :04:45.very talented rider. Emma Pooley is nearly a minute in arrears now. I
:04:46. > :04:50.think it is fair to say she is out of the running today. Not going as
:04:51. > :05:06.Emma Pooley would have liked at all. The first shot we have seen all day
:05:07. > :05:13.from the gold medallist from the road race, Anna van der Breggen. She
:05:14. > :05:20.has a chance of doubling up. It will be close. She is very close to Elisa
:05:21. > :05:26.Longo Borghini's time. She is over a second down. I would have put her as
:05:27. > :05:31.the favourite for the day. Good at going uphill, very good at going
:05:32. > :05:39.downhill. Elisa Longo Borghini is the time trial champion from Italy.
:05:40. > :05:45.We got a glimpse of her form, she took a medal in the road race. I
:05:46. > :05:57.think she is in a hunt for a win here. Zabelinskaya. Eri Yonamine
:05:58. > :06:03.comes in. I think she has set the fastest time so far, of the early
:06:04. > :06:11.finishers. I think she has caught Christine Majerus. Eri Yonamine from
:06:12. > :06:18.Japan, by some distance, will set the time to beat, a minute and a
:06:19. > :06:22.quarter quick than Plichta of Poland. Christine Majerus comes over
:06:23. > :06:32.the line as well. We have a new leader. We know Tara Whitten is the
:06:33. > :06:37.fastest time out on the course. Her lead, a minute over Emma Pooley. And
:06:38. > :06:48.nearly three minutes over Christine Majerus. Even faster again than we
:06:49. > :07:01.had anticipated. Zabelinskaya was 17 seconds down at the first time
:07:02. > :07:06.check. Here is Linda Villumsen. Still in contact, but lost some
:07:07. > :07:11.ground. 13 seconds is quite a lot in a time trial of this length. She
:07:12. > :07:17.will not be happy with that starting position. She has got time to
:07:18. > :07:22.rectify things. We switch back to Zabelinskaya. She is already down on
:07:23. > :07:29.the flat lands between the two climbs. She is from a real cycling
:07:30. > :07:36.family. Her father won a gold medal in the road race in the Olympics in
:07:37. > :07:41.Moscow in 1980. She is a rider who was only included in the last
:07:42. > :07:44.minute, of Friday, as a Russian athlete who has previously tested
:07:45. > :07:54.positive. We thought she would not be able to compete. Ellen Van Dijk,
:07:55. > :08:03.an open road in front of her now. And Kristin Armstrong. That is an
:08:04. > :08:08.extremely fast time for Armstrong. She is still approaching the summit,
:08:09. > :08:13.but this would not be Herath live favourite part of the course, but
:08:14. > :08:20.nevertheless, she has gone five seconds in front now. Armstrong, the
:08:21. > :08:26.fastest on the course at the first time check. Looks like she has got a
:08:27. > :08:32.nosebleed there. But it does not look as if she has fallen off and
:08:33. > :08:37.the time doesn't suggest that either. She has a nose dilating
:08:38. > :08:43.clip. You wonder if that has nicked something. Once the blood vessels
:08:44. > :08:50.start to dilate, as blood is pumping around the body, the slightest nick
:08:51. > :08:57.can look quite dramatic. Here is Ellen Van Dijk. She is going up to
:08:58. > :09:02.the Grota Funda Road. The camera motorbike is staying with her which
:09:03. > :09:08.is good so we get an idea of this part of the course. It is a very
:09:09. > :09:13.different part of the course. The descent is of a similar nature as
:09:14. > :09:16.well. A real judgment call for the riders but plenty of space to ride
:09:17. > :09:30.about. Lepisto of Finland now, coming
:09:31. > :09:35.towards the finish. We have not seen much of her. We are right on the
:09:36. > :09:42.seafront here but you would not know it on a day like this. And Lepisto
:09:43. > :09:46.with the second fastest time. Among the early finishers. Eri Yonamine is
:09:47. > :09:55.still the early leader, in the clubhouse, as it were. She will be
:09:56. > :10:00.sitting in the hot seat. And Lepisto, judging by the look on her
:10:01. > :10:05.face, will be glad it is over. Armstrong will be pleased with her
:10:06. > :10:12.start. She was something of an unknown coming into this. She is now
:10:13. > :10:19.on the Touraine that she likes. She has the potential to build a buffer
:10:20. > :10:24.now. Tara Whitten is coming in now. She has produced an excellent ride.
:10:25. > :10:30.She will have to fight for a medal. Fourth fastest at the first cheque.
:10:31. > :10:36.She will set the fastest time by far. Some considerable margin. Tara
:10:37. > :10:43.Whitten from Canada, the former Commonwealth Games champion, set the
:10:44. > :10:55.new fastest time. That Mark will stand for sometime, I think. The
:10:56. > :11:00.next riders are not particularly close. We are looking at Katrin
:11:01. > :11:07.Garfoot from Australia. She is not having such a good day to diva. She
:11:08. > :11:22.was 11 at the first cheque. Not ideal for her stop Anna van der
:11:23. > :11:26.Breggen briefly we saw. And Heine from Norway, way down today. Anna
:11:27. > :11:40.van der Breggen is in bronze medal position after the first cheque. The
:11:41. > :11:55.first three riders are separated by 6.3 seconds. It is all to play for.
:11:56. > :11:59.It was close in Richmond last in the women's World Championship. Very
:12:00. > :12:05.close between the top four riders. Just ten seconds separating the top
:12:06. > :12:08.four in Richmond. It shows you what a momentary lapse of attention might
:12:09. > :12:14.have cost Ellen Van Dijk who was very much in the running, but
:12:15. > :12:20.probably lost 20 seconds extricating herself from the foliage and getting
:12:21. > :12:24.back under way on the first climb. Anna van der Breggen riding well.
:12:25. > :12:29.Definitely a contender for a medal. Shows you how close it will be. You
:12:30. > :12:35.mentioned Ellen Van Dijk and whether she will pay for the slight mistake
:12:36. > :12:43.she made. In London four years ago, Linda Villumsen missed out on a
:12:44. > :12:48.medal by 1.83 seconds. Elisa Longo Borghini has just gone through the
:12:49. > :12:55.check in the fastest time. She is better than Tara Whitten by 20
:12:56. > :13:00.seconds. Not much gain. Nine seconds gain on the intervening seven or
:13:01. > :13:07.eight kilometres. Here we are with the world champion, Linda Villumsen.
:13:08. > :13:11.New Zealand have never won a road Olympic gold. She was on the podium
:13:12. > :13:20.five times in a row but has not quite pushed it over the line, as it
:13:21. > :13:23.were. They finally got a gold medal last year, you did wonder if she
:13:24. > :13:40.would forever be on the podium but not the top step. Karol-Ann
:13:41. > :13:48.if you're wondering what the small boxes are on the back of the riders,
:13:49. > :13:52.they are not allowed radios for the road race but they are for the time
:13:53. > :13:58.trial so they can get real-time checks. This woman, Kirsten
:13:59. > :14:03.Armstrong, a former Olympic champion, she will know exactly
:14:04. > :14:07.where she is on the road now and will take real motivation from that.
:14:08. > :14:14.What an extraordinary athlete she is. If she is able to win this race
:14:15. > :14:19.today, she would equal the all-time record of three gold medals in
:14:20. > :14:33.women's cycling, a record from the Netherlands. Amialiusik coming up to
:14:34. > :14:40.the line. She will set the second fastest time that's far, going ahead
:14:41. > :14:52.of the rider from Japan. Amialiusik of Belarus is in. And over the line
:14:53. > :15:07.comes Niewiadoma. She is way down. Who I think will be another star
:15:08. > :15:15.over the next few years. This is Ellen van Dijk, the former world
:15:16. > :15:22.champion. Second fastest of those who have gone through. 17 seconds
:15:23. > :15:27.slower at 20k. She is pushing the edge of the road again here to try
:15:28. > :15:33.to take the fastest line. All or nothing strategy from Ellen van Dijk
:15:34. > :15:37.here. It has to be, doesn't it? She's managed to claw back a couple
:15:38. > :15:40.of seconds from that first checkpoint, but she gave away an
:15:41. > :15:44.enormous amount in a race of this calibre. Without that unexpected
:15:45. > :15:47.detour into the scrub she would be right there with Elisa Longo
:15:48. > :15:52.Borghini in terms of time at this point.
:15:53. > :16:06.One of the best descenders in the field, Ellen van Dijk. The first we
:16:07. > :16:11.have seen of Lisa Brennauer since she left the start. Let's see how
:16:12. > :16:20.she is and how she's going overall. A minute in areas. Here comes Emma
:16:21. > :16:24.Pooley coming down towards the finish. Her face a picture of
:16:25. > :16:30.determination, she is eating out every second she possibly can but
:16:31. > :16:36.it's not going to be hurt they -- her day-to-day. Emma Pooley over the
:16:37. > :16:39.line in 46 minutes and 31 seconds, a minute and a half slower than the
:16:40. > :16:44.current leader, Tara Whitten. Emma Pooley will be some way short of the
:16:45. > :16:52.medals today. Yes, she will be disappointed with that, I imagine.
:16:53. > :17:02.Back now with Anna van der Breggen, nicely settled into a top position,
:17:03. > :17:17.isn't she? Anna van der Breggen was going very well at that first time
:17:18. > :17:23.check. Third fastest. Just six seconds in arrears. Definitely means
:17:24. > :17:36.it's still possible to win this race, absolutely. The fastest in
:17:37. > :17:50.this race still Ellis along their Borini. Evelyn Stevens will not be
:17:51. > :17:58.in the reckoning. Olga Zabelinskaya is on her tail. Karol-Ann Canuel the
:17:59. > :18:05.second of the two riders from Canada, over the line. 46.30.9
:18:06. > :18:13.three. A minute and they have shy of her compatriot and team-mate. --
:18:14. > :18:17.minute and a half. So, half of the riders are in and restart to get to
:18:18. > :18:23.the real business end of the race. With so many of the big names still
:18:24. > :18:28.out on the course, including this woman here, the world champion,
:18:29. > :18:34.Linda Villumsen. She competed for Denmark in the Olympic Games in
:18:35. > :18:43.Beijing and now a citizen of New Zealand. Lisa Brennauer just hasn't
:18:44. > :18:52.found that form this year that she had last year. Just one stage win
:18:53. > :18:58.for her during the come current season amid all the races she has
:18:59. > :19:09.written. A minute in Harriers, she is definitely out of the hunt for
:19:10. > :19:14.medals today. Lisa Brennauer, not her day, I don't think. A little bit
:19:15. > :19:24.laboured, perhaps, here, as she tackles this climb. She's not far
:19:25. > :19:33.the hind that all. Lisa Brennauer makes her way up the climb.
:19:34. > :19:41.Steady written but it won't take her anywhere near the podium today. --
:19:42. > :19:45.steady rhythm. So I think we need to see some of the other riders, to be
:19:46. > :19:49.perfectly honest with you. There you can see the nature of this climb,
:19:50. > :19:55.completely different to the other one. Big, wide, open expansive road
:19:56. > :20:06.and no sharp, steep sections of it at all. Twice the length of the
:20:07. > :20:14.previous climb to two kilometres, doesn't sound like much but it all
:20:15. > :20:29.adds up. Lost a little bit more time.
:20:30. > :20:41.Tips over into the descent. Fast descent, similar to what we've just
:20:42. > :20:44.seen on the way up, low, wide sweeping bends and curves, they will
:20:45. > :20:52.have to keep an eye on the speed but by and large a lot easier to
:20:53. > :21:03.negotiate. Olga Zabelinskaya is just behind her, not in front of her. As
:21:04. > :21:08.Duyck of Belgium is ringing out every last second that she possibly
:21:09. > :21:18.can. Just to let you know, and Anna van der Breggen goes through in
:21:19. > :21:33.third position, 16 seconds in arreas. She certainly gave her best,
:21:34. > :21:38.as Trixi Worrack comes in as well. Petrina Garfoot, the medallist in
:21:39. > :21:43.the come on wealth games, 83 seconds down on the time of Tara Whitten. It
:21:44. > :21:56.will not be a ride that will put her on the podium today.
:21:57. > :22:06.That's a replay of a point I've just made, 16 seconds in arrears.
:22:07. > :22:14.Understandable that she may just be carrying a bit of fatigue, after her
:22:15. > :22:18.gold medal success at the weekend. This gold medal descent is fast and
:22:19. > :22:25.encourages you to go quickly. Lulling you into a false sense of
:22:26. > :22:29.security. Thankfully the rain has mostly stayed away and the sky does
:22:30. > :22:36.look a little clearer than earlier. The cloud is certainly higher in the
:22:37. > :22:41.sky and it was earlier and it's a bit brighter. It was very dark when
:22:42. > :22:49.the riders set off. Linda Villumsen, now 24 seconds in arrears. Fort
:22:50. > :22:54.fastest, just outside the medals. Kristin Armstrong is behind her on
:22:55. > :23:03.the road as well. Kristin Armstrong going very, very well so far today.
:23:04. > :23:06.She's going to be challenged by Van Duyck and Armstrong. She may slip
:23:07. > :23:24.off the podium this year. Van Dijk just the hind her. 20
:23:25. > :23:28.seconds in arrears. As we watch Armstrong powering up this final
:23:29. > :23:37.climb. Remarkable athlete, as we've mentioned several times, twice the
:23:38. > :23:42.world champion. Ellis along their Baldini comes into wards the finish.
:23:43. > :23:47.I think we will have a fastest time here, the way Longo Borghini has
:23:48. > :23:53.been riding, and we most certainly are, as Longo Borghini sprints up
:23:54. > :23:58.towards the line. Very, very close! And she has beaten the time of Tara
:23:59. > :24:08.Whitten by just under ten seconds and is followed rapidly over the
:24:09. > :24:18.line by Ashleigh Moolman-Paso South Africa. In the meantime, Armstrong
:24:19. > :24:24.has gone through in second position. We are being shown the second check.
:24:25. > :24:30.That is a bit of a surprise. Less than three seconds in it? Just three
:24:31. > :24:37.seconds behind. That's something of a surprise, there. So, Olga
:24:38. > :24:46.Zabelinskaya going very well. She was 22 seconds adrift at the first
:24:47. > :24:52.cheque and has come crawling back. Something of a surprise but she's
:24:53. > :24:55.very much back in the hunt. Here we are with Ellen van Dijk, we haven't
:24:56. > :24:59.seen her for a little while, still powering her way around the course
:25:00. > :25:03.and she's still powering her way to the finish line. Just a minute or
:25:04. > :25:13.two away from reaching the finishing line. Heading back towards the
:25:14. > :25:17.beach. Can she eke out another second or two to try to make up for
:25:18. > :25:28.that minor little detour on the side of the road earlier on? Some quotes
:25:29. > :25:33.coming in from Emma Pooley, saying she was disappointed but she doesn't
:25:34. > :25:39.regret giving it a go today. Wasn't her day, she said, same conditions
:25:40. > :25:48.for all, so can't blame the weather, but" it just wasn't my day, I gave
:25:49. > :25:53.it my all". Can she hold it all the way to the finish? Headwind all the
:25:54. > :25:59.way today. Meanwhile, back on the course is Anna van der Breggen.
:26:00. > :26:06.Fourth fastest, Anna van der Breggen. The 19.7 kilometre mark.
:26:07. > :26:12.She too has slipped off the podium thanks to a fantastic middle section
:26:13. > :26:20.by Olga Zabelinskaya. There is Linda Villumsen from New Zealand. Fifth
:26:21. > :26:30.position for her at the intermediate check. Still in the hunt, but here
:26:31. > :26:36.comes Ellen van Dijk from the Netherlands powering along the road
:26:37. > :26:43.and looking to eke out any little extra second that she possibly can
:26:44. > :26:48.now. The Sprint for the line is on for Ellen van Dijk, and she will
:26:49. > :26:57.just finish inside the time of Elisa Longo Borghini, by just over three
:26:58. > :27:00.seconds. Van Dijk is the new leader. Longo Borghini of Italy down into
:27:01. > :27:03.the silver medal position and Tara Whitten of Canada down in third.
:27:04. > :27:16.Katrin Garfoot of Australia down now. She was six
:27:17. > :27:20.at the middle cheque, so that 20 second loss by riding off the side
:27:21. > :27:26.of the road could end up costing her very dearly. She will be very
:27:27. > :27:30.disappointed as we switch back to her team-mates, Anna van der
:27:31. > :27:38.Breggen, who is supposedly on the road 12 seconds to the good. How
:27:39. > :27:45.will she finish? This is the race for the medals now. It's very much
:27:46. > :27:47.an, not just in terms of her speed or time compared with Ellen van
:27:48. > :27:52.Dijk, but other riders including this one here, Kristin Armstrong,
:27:53. > :27:59.going very well out on the course and Olga Zabelinskaya of Russia too.
:28:00. > :28:04.Anna van der Breggen was quite a way off at the last check, fourth at the
:28:05. > :28:22.last check. Armstrong just under three seconds behind Olga
:28:23. > :28:27.Zabelinskaya. This looks like Hanna Solovey -- Solovei of Ukraine. Olga
:28:28. > :28:31.Zabelinskaya has taken everybody by surprise. That's why we haven't seen
:28:32. > :28:37.many images but she has had a storming middle section. The race
:28:38. > :28:41.for the medal is very much on here but Britain's Emma Pooley will not
:28:42. > :28:48.be on the podium today. It's not her day. Solovei comes across the line
:28:49. > :28:52.and now we're just waiting for the big favourites, the fastest riders
:28:53. > :28:58.on the course to come to the line and decide the medals.
:28:59. > :29:05.STUDIO And we would like to welcome viewers
