:00:00. > :00:10.away anything. The jump, slight pause before the free cartwheel.
:00:11. > :00:26.Just building up. Which dismount will she use? Double Arabian, oh...
:00:27. > :00:31.Just slightly over of -- overregulated it. Brand-new
:00:32. > :00:37.dismount, but she went for broke. That's a shame because it was a
:00:38. > :00:43.great beam routine. We are back on floor with Aly Raisman to see a few
:00:44. > :00:48.more of her tumbles and goodness me. You can see how much it meant to
:00:49. > :00:51.her. She took a couple of years away after London 2012 and then really
:00:52. > :00:55.fought back to get into that team and as soon as she landed that
:00:56. > :01:01.tumble, just the emotion flooded out. 15.433 is enough to push
:01:02. > :01:09.Mustafina down into that third position, with one gymnast left to
:01:10. > :01:12.go. So Simone Biles will wrap up this women's all-around final with
:01:13. > :01:27.fireworks. This am for gold in the women's
:01:28. > :01:29.all-around final. The smile says it all. She loves to perform. Double
:01:30. > :01:49.straight somersault with the twist. Not daunted, enjoying every minute
:01:50. > :02:08.of it. Double straight with half turn, immediate jump.
:02:09. > :02:20.Watch this for a third tumble, double twisting, double straight,
:02:21. > :02:41.only took half a run. One last tumble, to become Olympic
:02:42. > :02:47.champion. Here it is. Absolutely no doubting.
:02:48. > :02:58.And what a champion! Finishes with a flourish and there is gold number
:02:59. > :03:03.two for Simone Biles. Absolutely superb performance.
:03:04. > :03:07.CHEERING Wow, the adoration and the disbelief
:03:08. > :03:16.that is going around this arena right now, to witness this. To be
:03:17. > :03:22.here, to watch that! It was just something else. Well, to watch both
:03:23. > :03:36.the American gymnasts on floor, they were so positive, so well rehearsed.
:03:37. > :03:41.And the experience must have been to console said Tutkhalyan, she tried
:03:42. > :03:49.but it wasn't to be. So it's one and two to the USA and Mustafina will
:03:50. > :03:50.take the bronze. Which I think she will be highly delighted to come
:03:51. > :04:07.away with. Just 4'8", but full of power and
:04:08. > :04:11.it's almost confusing, isn't it, how she manages to do that. You were
:04:12. > :04:16.talking about that third tumble, Chris, and the power that she must
:04:17. > :04:20.have, and to keep it going. Yes, and she doesn't need to take long
:04:21. > :04:24.run-ins to things. She is by a long way the most powerful gymnast I have
:04:25. > :04:28.ever seen. And doing the most difficult work we have ever seen in
:04:29. > :04:41.women's gymnastics. To be honest, that floor routine would stand up in
:04:42. > :04:44.the men's flaws, it was really exceptional work. You can see the
:04:45. > :04:48.pop -- the disappointment in the eyes of several of the others. I
:04:49. > :04:53.think Mustafina will be very happy with the bronze medal. She has had
:04:54. > :04:57.an up-and-down year. She wins bronze here, Aly Raisman, just outside the
:04:58. > :05:04.all-around medals, the last Olympics but she is on the podium and its
:05:05. > :05:12.silver for her, and there is confirmation that Simone Biles, with
:05:13. > :05:20.a 15.933 is the women's all-around Olympic champion. It's USA one and
:05:21. > :05:26.two Russia bronze. And this is a moment that she will remember all
:05:27. > :05:31.her life. It's one thing to get gold in the individual apparatus finals,
:05:32. > :05:35.but quite another, Chris, to the Olympic champion all-around.
:05:36. > :05:40.Absolutely and not been done for a long time for the current world
:05:41. > :05:44.champion to then come and be Olympic champion, three times world
:05:45. > :05:49.champion, now Olympic champion. Really dominated women's gymnastics
:05:50. > :05:54.in a way we haven't seen for many, many years. And what a display. Aly
:05:55. > :05:58.Raisman didn't really make the impact she would have wanted earlier
:05:59. > :06:03.on in the competition, but what a second-half. Yes, she looked a bit
:06:04. > :06:08.edgy, Raisman, and although she is very well trained, she is very
:06:09. > :06:14.powerful, she showed she was a little bit human, whereas really
:06:15. > :06:22.Simone Biles doesn't show that frailty at all.
:06:23. > :06:29.It will just be huge relief for Simone Biles to come here with so
:06:30. > :06:33.much expectation on her shoulders. 19 years old. That's only going to
:06:34. > :06:38.build, Chris, because the media are talking about the fact she could get
:06:39. > :06:43.five gold medals at a single Olympics, so everybody is going to
:06:44. > :06:46.be on her back from now. This is two golds already, she can't win the
:06:47. > :06:51.bars but the other three pieces she could well win. She has posted the
:06:52. > :06:55.top score all the way around but Russia, they took the two in silver
:06:56. > :06:59.and now on individual bronze, that's a big success for them as well. And
:07:00. > :07:15.absolute delight in the USA camp. And really, as you were saying, the
:07:16. > :07:20.fact that only two gymnasts Donacien allowed in, you know, the
:07:21. > :07:24.third-place gymnast last night, Gavin Jim -- Gabby Douglas, the
:07:25. > :07:27.defending champion from the Olympic, she qualified third but couldn't
:07:28. > :07:33.take part because of the two gymnasts only per nation rule I will
:07:34. > :07:38.be think there's an argument to allow at least three so all the
:07:39. > :07:42.medals can be contested for. There was only something like 0.1 between
:07:43. > :07:47.Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas in that qualification, so it came right
:07:48. > :07:51.down to the wire, which other gymnasts from the USA was going to
:07:52. > :07:55.be given the opportunity to get a medal. Yes, absolutely, so I don't
:07:56. > :08:00.know whether it is something the federation might look at but we did
:08:01. > :08:04.at one time allow three in, but then it was a bigger competition with 36
:08:05. > :08:12.and it all round, here we've only got 24. And Beth, as a former world
:08:13. > :08:19.for champion yourself, you must have enjoyed that routine? It was, I mean
:08:20. > :08:27.the standard of the floor routines since London 2012 have dramatically
:08:28. > :08:32.increased, so I'm glad I'm not in this floor at all! I think the top
:08:33. > :08:36.two have increased but I'm not so sure that they have so dramatically
:08:37. > :08:42.increased after that. I mean in fact Ellie Downie did very similar
:08:43. > :08:50.tumbles that you did and I'm just having a little look, she was one of
:08:51. > :08:55.the highest scorers on floor, so I think the top two are in a league of
:08:56. > :08:59.their own on floor here, don't you think? They are, throughout the
:09:00. > :09:03.competition they showed that class and determination. It really shows
:09:04. > :09:11.how much preparation goes into it. I know that their preparation is very
:09:12. > :09:16.hard, they do lots of routines, there is no letup on it. Lots of
:09:17. > :09:21.results come from it, being able to ground -- being able to be crowned
:09:22. > :09:27.one and two at the Olympics Dane is. This is Ellie Downie's final
:09:28. > :09:32.routine, she did a really good performance on beam. She has worked
:09:33. > :09:36.very, very hard and improved fantastically. The front somersault
:09:37. > :09:41.linked to the jump gives those that 0.1 bonus and this is the skill that
:09:42. > :09:45.is very difficult and can sometimes be inconsistent but today, not at
:09:46. > :09:52.all. She held on to the standing half turn, into front somersault.
:09:53. > :10:03.Lovely split position in her leaps. And interestingly enough, this
:10:04. > :10:13.routine gave her a total that put her 13th. Her elder sister in
:10:14. > :10:18.Beijing was 12 DH macro. -- 12th. The very similar series, the
:10:19. > :10:23.backflip and the layout somersault. She had paused their before the free
:10:24. > :10:28.cart wheel, probably starting to think about the dismount. She has
:10:29. > :10:31.used the two and a half twisting dismount throughout the
:10:32. > :10:35.Championships, but she has been preparing this very difficult double
:10:36. > :10:41.Arabian and decided she might as well go for broke, so she did. Watch
:10:42. > :10:48.it, she just didn't come out with quite enough conviction to hold it.
:10:49. > :10:54.That was one hallmark deduction, but the actual routine was beautiful. --
:10:55. > :11:00.one hole mark. It seems, we talked about this, she is 17 years old and
:11:01. > :11:04.taking all of this experience, how do you think that will have affected
:11:05. > :11:08.her? Obviously she's disappointed because she could have made a real
:11:09. > :11:11.impact in that top ten especially with everything that was going on
:11:12. > :11:16.here, but will she be able to take the positives away? I think she
:11:17. > :11:19.will, the fact she got that new dismount on beam in such a big
:11:20. > :11:22.arena, she can use that for future competitions knowing she has now
:11:23. > :11:32.performed under that pressure and knowing how much to give it, how
:11:33. > :11:35.much not to give it, so every competition she has done she will
:11:36. > :11:40.learn something from it and then use it for future and she will hopefully
:11:41. > :11:43.be in Tokyo in 2020. Absolutely, David McDaid is going to put that
:11:44. > :11:49.question to her now. Let's hear from Ellie Downie. Just tell us your
:11:50. > :11:53.thoughts after that? Yes, I would be lying if I said I wasn't slightly
:11:54. > :11:59.disappointed with that. I had a really good start on floor and
:12:00. > :12:02.vault, and on the bars I have missed that dismount all week, it was a
:12:03. > :12:08.concentration thing, my dismount I have not been able to train it so
:12:09. > :12:12.much because I hurt my back in qualification. -- in training. I
:12:13. > :12:16.thought I would go all out today and try the dismount. I have been doing
:12:17. > :12:19.it for a couple of years but not many times in competition and it
:12:20. > :12:23.didn't come off today, but the rest of my beam was very good. I am happy
:12:24. > :12:28.but a little bit disappointed as well. That's your competition
:12:29. > :12:33.finished. Tellers how your first Olympics has gone? How happy are
:12:34. > :12:38.you? Mixed feelings, codification was difficult but I was proud of
:12:39. > :12:42.myself to be on the vault and that's why I'm in the final today, if I
:12:43. > :12:47.didn't fight then I wouldn't be here today. We didn't get the medal we
:12:48. > :12:52.were hoping for but it was still really good and today wasn't what I
:12:53. > :12:56.was hoping for a game but I'm only young, hopefully I have another
:12:57. > :13:02.Olympics in me and just looking forward to the future now. You and
:13:03. > :13:06.your family have brought something for your sister asked if she missed
:13:07. > :13:12.it on Monday, we won't need to buy one called Tokyo for you, you will
:13:13. > :13:16.be aiming for it already? I won't be giving up yet, I will go home, have
:13:17. > :13:22.a rest and get back in the gym macro training for next year. Thank you,
:13:23. > :13:26.goodbye. Thank you. What a well earned rest, but what an all-around
:13:27. > :13:32.competition it was. At one point Simone Biles was in second! It was
:13:33. > :13:35.quite surprising, wasn't it? Yes, it was and Mustafina had two strong
:13:36. > :13:41.pieces and fortunately didn't get the school she wanted which is what
:13:42. > :13:45.caused her to come third in the end -- she did not get the score she
:13:46. > :13:50.wanted. I'm confused with what happened with Mustafina on beam. She
:13:51. > :13:55.missed the first connection which they have to do, it's a set element.
:13:56. > :13:59.In qualification she had the same problem and on the second attempt
:14:00. > :14:03.that she tried it with the free walkover, in qualification she went
:14:04. > :14:06.for the free walk over and then put her hands down, so I don't think she
:14:07. > :14:13.wanted to make that same mistake again. The rest of the routine was
:14:14. > :14:21.nice. So it's a difficult decision, do you put that extra connection in
:14:22. > :14:24.and then missed the floor, or play safe? Was the right thing to do
:14:25. > :14:29.because in her mind do you think she was going for that silver, or do you
:14:30. > :14:34.think she knew Aly Raisman have this phenomenal floor? I think it's
:14:35. > :14:39.different, had she had a great beam she would have been going for the
:14:40. > :14:42.silver but once she had done beam she may have seen the scores and
:14:43. > :14:45.thought she could fight for the bronze because she looked quite
:14:46. > :14:48.dejected after beam but by the time she came out on the floor she had
:14:49. > :14:55.pulled herself together and knew she could fight for the bronze.
:14:56. > :15:04.The Americans finished the competition in real style. Aly
:15:05. > :15:11.Raisman set the bar as far as the expectation in the Rio Olympic arena
:15:12. > :15:15.was concerned. This tumble is incredible, a one and a half into a
:15:16. > :15:20.double Arabian and punches straightaway into the straight. Just
:15:21. > :15:26.the numbers they do, their precision, spatial awareness,
:15:27. > :15:31.landings, there is nothing for the judges to take off them. It set the
:15:32. > :15:37.boundaries for Simone Biles to come out afterwards. I watched her coach
:15:38. > :15:41.when she did this routine. He has worked so hard to get her fit to for
:15:42. > :15:47.these championships and when she landed the double pike he was
:15:48. > :15:52.jumping around everywhere. She was crying and he had tears in his eyes.
:15:53. > :15:58.It meant so much to them. She was just outside the medals last time.
:15:59. > :16:05.For years is a long time, a lot of effort goes into it and it has paid
:16:06. > :16:09.off, getting a silver medal. I could watch the floor routine of Simone
:16:10. > :16:17.Biles all day long. Talk us through this from a world champion's
:16:18. > :16:24.perspective. She loves performing. From the music starting she had the
:16:25. > :16:30.biggest smile on her face. How does she get that lift? ! I have no idea.
:16:31. > :16:37.She has far too much energy. She needs to share it out, to be honest!
:16:38. > :16:42.Her spatial awareness to do the second tumble with the half turn,
:16:43. > :16:49.straight into another jump. After she had done that it was like, OK, I
:16:50. > :16:54.have two more tumbles. This middle section, she is basically playing to
:16:55. > :17:00.the crowd, getting them involved. The smiles are there. She loves her
:17:01. > :17:06.gymnastics. She enjoys performing. Not just on the tumbles does she get
:17:07. > :17:14.the height, even on the jumps and the leaps, she gets height. For this
:17:15. > :17:22.tumble, double twist, double back. It is tough, anyway, and to get that
:17:23. > :17:26.height... I competed with that, my first tumble, having to save my
:17:27. > :17:35.energy for it and she does it in the middle. It shows how easy it is for
:17:36. > :17:41.her. Look at that! Again, plenty of time to have a look and see where
:17:42. > :17:49.she wants to put her feet. I'd love that finish. What a character. You
:17:50. > :17:54.can see the five gold medals glittering in her eyes. The
:17:55. > :18:02.appropriate leotard with the stars and stripes. Every single skill she
:18:03. > :18:09.does is textbook. Every coach will be looking out that saying, this is
:18:10. > :18:18.how we want you to perform it. Well, that just sums up what is to come
:18:19. > :18:23.here. Ten individual apparatus finals as far as men and women are
:18:24. > :18:30.concerned and we have great interest. We have the floor, beam
:18:31. > :18:36.finalists. Pommel horse finalists. This will be on Monday. Are we going
:18:37. > :18:41.to see the first ever Olympic champion for Great Britain in
:18:42. > :18:48.gymnastics? I hope so. Potentially we have a chance to create history.
:18:49. > :18:52.Wenger 's cross. We have a two pronged attack with Louis Smith and
:18:53. > :18:56.Max Whitlock. What will go one in the next few days as far as they are
:18:57. > :19:02.concerned? They will work on the routine. They will go for a harder
:19:03. > :19:06.routine. Making sure they get the extra element comfortable in
:19:07. > :19:11.training and then to go all out in the final. Join us on Monday to see
:19:12. > :19:18.what happens when they go all out. Let's keep everything crossed and
:19:19. > :19:25.hope for the first champion for Great Britain on pommel horse.
:19:26. > :19:30.Goodbye. We are still here. That was amazing. Incredible from Simone
:19:31. > :19:36.Biles and thanks for the texts and tweets. Justin says Simone Biles is
:19:37. > :19:46.the Queen. Another says what an amazing performance. Inspiration.
:19:47. > :19:52.Daisy says, wow. Marco says Simone Biles is fantastic. Congratulations
:19:53. > :19:57.to Simone Biles, the best gymnasts we will ever seen. That is probably
:19:58. > :20:01.up for discussion. We can show you more of her routine because it's
:20:02. > :20:08.worth recognising how good she has been. Since she became a senior
:20:09. > :20:14.gymnasts, let's look at the results. When she became a senior, second,
:20:15. > :20:27.first, second, first, first, first, first. First, first, first. First,
:20:28. > :20:34.first, first. Surprisingly, first, first, first, first. In her last 14
:20:35. > :20:38.all-around competitions she has finished top on every single
:20:39. > :20:44.occasion. That is why she is the best in the world. Two gold medals
:20:45. > :20:49.out of two. A lot of people watching are saying that is not the last gold
:20:50. > :20:54.medal we have seen from her at these Games or even across her career.
:20:55. > :20:58.Even if you are not particularly into the gymnastics, you have
:20:59. > :21:03.enjoyed watching one of the world's best this evening. Look at the
:21:04. > :21:08.photographers. These are the pictures you will watch and see on
:21:09. > :21:15.your TVs as newspapers tomorrow. Incredible. This floor routine, I
:21:16. > :21:20.will not joke with you, I do not know everything about gymnastics,
:21:21. > :21:26.but even I, as a Luddite, can look at this and say she is truly
:21:27. > :21:30.incredible. She is four foot eight. Her coach said yesterday she can
:21:31. > :21:35.learn in three days what it takes some people a year is to learn and
:21:36. > :21:40.that is other professional gymnasts. The final tumble, she is actually
:21:41. > :21:46.twice her own height off the floor before she lands it. I think we can
:21:47. > :21:54.see her getting her medal. We can go back to the Olympic arena. That is
:21:55. > :22:03.Simone Biles in the middle. About to receive the gold medal for team USA.
:22:04. > :22:08.They are already top of the medal table. Her coach said yesterday she
:22:09. > :22:14.is a pleasure to work with and she can learn so quickly what others
:22:15. > :22:19.take so long. Beth Tweddle said the beam is ten centimetres wide and on
:22:20. > :22:24.occasion she is performing tumbles off the beam that others perform on
:22:25. > :22:29.the floor. That is the extent to which she is better than some of
:22:30. > :22:33.those around her. The rest are top five, top ten in the world, and yet
:22:34. > :22:48.she is so far clear of others around her. She has finished well over 60
:22:49. > :22:54.points in the last five, taking gold medal on every occasion. She is the
:22:55. > :23:01.all-around champion. We can hear the national anthem of America. Ladies
:23:02. > :23:14.and gentlemen, the anthem of the United States of America.
:23:15. > :24:27.AMERICAN NATIONAL ANTHEM PLAYS. CHEERING.
:24:28. > :24:35.Simone Biles, Olympic champion in the women's individual all-around.
:24:36. > :24:40.Russia taking the bronze medal. And I will read from Matthew Pinsent,
:24:41. > :24:54.himself a four-time Olympic gold medallist. He says winning by
:24:55. > :24:57.country Biles! We have been on the gymnastics for quite some time. We
:24:58. > :25:08.can remind you what else has happened. These are the headlines.
:25:09. > :25:14.Silver medal for David Florence and Richard Hounslow, the same as they
:25:15. > :25:20.did in London in the canoe doubles. Also a silver medal for Katherine
:25:21. > :25:26.Grainger and Vicky Thornley in the double sculls. Hopefully they will
:25:27. > :25:33.join us later live on the beach. What a semifinal for Team GB's men.
:25:34. > :25:39.After beating South Africa we will see them take on Fiji at 11pm,
:25:40. > :25:45.probably on BBC One. We will keep you posted on that.
:25:46. > :25:51.Andy Murray is safely through to the quarters of the men's singles
:25:52. > :26:02.tennis. Johanna Konta is sadly out after losing to Angelique Kerber.
:26:03. > :26:10.GB women's team pursuit have set a new world record in qualifying for
:26:11. > :26:16.the semifinal. We are going straight to the boxing
:26:17. > :26:24.because Team GB Representative Pat McCormack, light welterweight, is in
:26:25. > :26:35.there. His first fight of the games. Taking on the boxer from Kazakhstan.
:26:36. > :26:41.Ablaikhan Zhussupov. This is the first round of preliminary action.
:26:42. > :26:46.The opening bout for these boxes. They have had a long wait to get
:26:47. > :26:52.their campaigns under way. The British representative who just
:26:53. > :26:58.landed a good left hook. Ranked 18th in the world, Pat McCormack. His
:26:59. > :27:02.opponent is an immensely talented 19-year-old, Ablaikhan Zhussupov of
:27:03. > :27:07.Kazakhstan. Not ranked in senior rankings but he brings a glittering
:27:08. > :27:18.set of credentials from the junior and youth ranks. Not a bad start for
:27:19. > :27:24.McCormack. He is against a Seung Ju -- a southpaw.
:27:25. > :27:30.It has been a good start for McCormack. Patient boxing from him.
:27:31. > :27:35.Against his opponent, he cannot afford to make mistakes. He is
:27:36. > :27:40.staying well balanced, patients. A good right hand. This is how he has
:27:41. > :27:51.to box in the first round. Plenty of thought in these forward forays from
:27:52. > :27:56.both boxers. McCormack just fell short. The reigning European
:27:57. > :28:01.Championship silver medallist coming away with second placed finish in
:28:02. > :28:05.the tournament in Bulgaria last summer.
:28:06. > :28:14.He qualified for this, his first Olympics. He gets tagged with a good
:28:15. > :28:19.southpaw left to the body by Ablaikhan Zhussupov, who qualified
:28:20. > :28:24.by coming first place in the global qualification event in June. A
:28:25. > :28:32.first-place finish in the Asian and O'Shea Arnie continental
:28:33. > :28:35.qualification event. A couple of choices when throwing the right
:28:36. > :28:42.hand, Pat McCormack, he has to get his Leeds leg into distance, find
:28:43. > :28:46.the rage, throw the shot, otherwise he falls short. Or he waits for his
:28:47. > :28:55.opponent come forward and close the gap. Bring him onto the shot as he
:28:56. > :28:59.comes forward. That was better. Ablaikhan Zhussupov made a mistake
:29:00. > :29:06.when he came forward and McCormack punished him. The left hook and when
:29:07. > :29:10.he got back into position, landing a right-hander. Suddenly, the boxing
:29:11. > :29:14.stance of Ablaikhan Zhussupov becoming dishevelled. A good
:29:15. > :29:18.conclusion to the round by the man in blue with Pat McCormack landing
:29:19. > :29:25.eye-catching punches at the end of the first round. A clever display
:29:26. > :29:35.from McCormack. We can listen to Dave Alloway. Maybe lead off a
:29:36. > :29:41.little bit more. Dave Alloway saying maybe lead off a
:29:42. > :29:48.little bit more, you are quicker than him. Dave Alloway wants him to
:29:49. > :29:58.beat him to the punch. He can lead off in the form of the feint. A good
:29:59. > :30:02.display from McCormack and he has got it, two scores to one. I agree
:30:03. > :30:15.with that. Round two. We move into the second
:30:16. > :30:20.round, a very good round of boxing in the opener, shaded by Pat
:30:21. > :30:25.McCormack. The man from Birtley boxing club, which is proving as be
:30:26. > :30:29.such a hotbed of talent for the GB squad at the English Institute of
:30:30. > :30:33.sport. His twin brother Luke started the programme, as is Cyrus
:30:34. > :30:39.Pattinson, an outstanding boxer at 69 kilograms he just missed out on
:30:40. > :30:44.an Olympic about it. Plenty more on what is becoming a conveyor belt
:30:45. > :30:51.from that club as well. All in the mix or on the cusp. Callum French
:30:52. > :30:57.another one. At crouching right hand, that was a wonderful lead
:30:58. > :31:04.right out of the Orthodox stands and the teenager was forced to retreat
:31:05. > :31:08.on unsteady legs. A super shot, playing it cool, McCormack but if
:31:09. > :31:13.you make a mistake he punishes you. Tremendous stuff, good boxing from
:31:14. > :31:18.McCormack but fast reactions. Mention a glittering career that
:31:19. > :31:25.Zhussupov has had at the junior and youth ranks, I was ringside to see
:31:26. > :31:28.him win his youth Olympic Games gold in 2014. That same year he took
:31:29. > :31:35.world youth championship gold, the year before that, world junior gold
:31:36. > :31:39.in Kiev. In the Ukraine. He has made a seamless transition through to
:31:40. > :31:43.senior boxing, but meeting a really accomplished operator here in the
:31:44. > :31:47.form of Pat McCormack and so far the man in blue is providing a puzzle
:31:48. > :31:53.that he's finding difficult to solve. Very good boxing so far from
:31:54. > :31:56.Pat McCormack. Excellent judgment of distance there from McCormack. He's
:31:57. > :32:00.edging in but he won't go over the front foot, because if he goes to
:32:01. > :32:04.close he will get caught but by moving forward the way he is an
:32:05. > :32:08.occasionally he is an occasionally he's making his opponents lead off
:32:09. > :32:11.and that's what he wants them to do. He's going forward and once
:32:12. > :32:15.Zhussupov to lead and he will come back with a counter. Clever boxing
:32:16. > :32:19.from McCormack, brilliant. Good right hand underneath from McCormack
:32:20. > :32:23.and a straight right hand to the body from the man in blue. Both
:32:24. > :32:25.these men part of the strongest boxing programmes in the world,
:32:26. > :32:29.that's the wonderful lead left hand by McCormack and getting to work
:32:30. > :32:33.with the right hand. Both men members of teams made up of
:32:34. > :32:37.identical compositions, a full condiment of men across all ten
:32:38. > :32:41.waits for both Kazakhstan and Great Britain and two women as well, good
:32:42. > :32:49.left-hand by McCormack before he pivoted off in the same direction.
:32:50. > :32:55.It's important he holds his ground and doesn't allow Zhussupov to push
:32:56. > :33:00.back. Finish on the left hook, and again, super punch, McCormack. Good
:33:01. > :33:03.boxing skills. Continuing to disrupt the attempted forward movement of
:33:04. > :33:06.Zhussupov is McCormack, that right-hand proving to be a
:33:07. > :33:11.particularly effective shot in that regard. There it is once again, the
:33:12. > :33:17.arcing variety and along left just before the bell. Another very good
:33:18. > :33:27.round and look at that, the Mackems on tour! The lead cheerleader behind
:33:28. > :33:30.that illustrative flag. Zhussupov coming forward but making mistakes.
:33:31. > :33:37.McCormack crashes that right-hand though. It's a clever display from
:33:38. > :33:41.the Birtley boxer. Because he is patient, he's bringing his opponent
:33:42. > :33:46.on to the punch and he is staying out of range. He gets caught there
:33:47. > :33:50.with a shot book would boxing skills, clever display. I'll be
:33:51. > :33:55.amazed if he hasn't won this. Across the board, there you go, rightly so,
:33:56. > :34:01.a perfect scoring for McCormack. As well as Richie Woodhall to my left
:34:02. > :34:04.we have the Olympic gold medallist, and Trophy winner from Italy,
:34:05. > :34:11.Patrice Oliver in front of us and he's liking what he's seeing from
:34:12. > :34:15.Pat McCormack. Round 3. Into the third and final round and Pat
:34:16. > :34:18.McCormack of Great Britain, the 18th ranked boxer in the world in a
:34:19. > :34:23.really commanding position. He's taken a second round across the
:34:24. > :34:27.board. He leads by two points on the court judges AMC, it's all square
:34:28. > :34:33.for Judge B after that observer gave the man in red the opening round --
:34:34. > :34:41.he leads by two points on the cards of judges a and C. Zhussupov needs a
:34:42. > :34:46.massive round to get back on terms. He needs to do something different,
:34:47. > :34:49.he has to up the tempo, his corner will have told him. He's a
:34:50. > :34:54.counterpuncher himself so he doesn't like going forward, the fellow in
:34:55. > :34:57.red, but he has done and will walk on Timor-Leste talks like that,
:34:58. > :35:05.again perfectly well timed shot from McCormack. A terrific display from
:35:06. > :35:07.Pat McCormack. These two boxers are so well skilled if you make the
:35:08. > :35:12.slightest mistake they punish you and that is what is happening here.
:35:13. > :35:16.Zhussupov is making the mistakes and its McCormack that is punishing him.
:35:17. > :35:21.Got through the good southpaw left a couple of moments ago, the same shot
:35:22. > :35:26.in evidence against Ron Zhussupov so McCormack will have to keep his wits
:35:27. > :35:29.about him here. He would love to do that to send a message to the rest
:35:30. > :35:33.of the light welterweight division, being very much a man in form has
:35:34. > :35:39.McCormack picking up the European Championships over last year. Lost a
:35:40. > :35:43.terrific content -- contest to Joe Cordina in the Commonwealth Games in
:35:44. > :35:48.the first preliminary round, a contest worthy and it was a
:35:49. > :35:54.right-hand success for McCormack and in World Series boxing for the
:35:55. > :35:59.British Lion Herts, with no vest, Pat McCormack was named the regular
:36:00. > :36:07.boxer of the regular season, so impressive were his displays. He
:36:08. > :36:11.made a mistake there, McCormack, coming forward. Missed with the
:36:12. > :36:15.right hand and walked onto the left. This contest is not over yet, just
:36:16. > :36:19.under a minute ago. He is winning it but he has to concentrate here. To
:36:20. > :36:24.get over the line. It's a good performance up to now, but he has to
:36:25. > :36:29.keep it going. He has to focus and concentrate, every second of every
:36:30. > :36:37.round, it is so important. We mentioned the underage success that
:36:38. > :36:39.Zhussupov has enjoyed. A good right hand from McCormack once again. Pat
:36:40. > :36:44.McCormack went over to Kazakhstan and came away with world junior gold
:36:45. > :36:47.in 2011 at 50 kilograms, that gives you an idea that this is an
:36:48. > :36:51.immensely talented individual. Graduated through to the senior
:36:52. > :36:54.ranks and what an impact he is making. Really impressive Olympic
:36:55. > :37:00.debut against a very published boxer. He has been composed, he has
:37:01. > :37:04.been controlled. These ten second clapper indicates he is on the cusp
:37:05. > :37:07.of going through to the second round of the 64 kilograms light
:37:08. > :37:14.welterweight tournament. There is the bell to conclude a terrific
:37:15. > :37:19.display from the man in blue. He led by two points for judges A and C,
:37:20. > :37:21.Callum French leading the cheers in the stands again but having
:37:22. > :37:25.progressed through we have to wait for initial confirmation of course,
:37:26. > :37:30.the 19-year-old Catholic boxer is disappointed but he has been beaten
:37:31. > :37:35.by an accomplished display from Pat McCormack but more about the second
:37:36. > :37:40.round at the moment. A fantastic display, look at that reverse 1-2,
:37:41. > :37:44.he follows through with a left hand. It was a clever and well disciplined
:37:45. > :37:51.display. I think that is the word, it was a disciplined display from
:37:52. > :37:55.McCormack. He stayed at range well, he he leads with the right hand and
:37:56. > :38:00.finishes with the left, he kept it going. He never came over his front
:38:01. > :38:03.foot. He boxed against a tricky southpaw but he didn't make mistakes
:38:04. > :38:07.and wasn't punished. McCormack stayed well balanced, a terrific
:38:08. > :38:09.performance. We had a great performance from Joshua Buatsi
:38:10. > :38:16.earlier today and that didn't equally because Buatsi knocked his
:38:17. > :38:21.opponent out but in many respects that was up there with it,
:38:22. > :38:25.tremendous stuff. Nice to see the handshake of respect between the two
:38:26. > :38:37.boxers. Let's get the official announcement. Ladies and gentlemen,
:38:38. > :38:50.the winner by a split decision... In the blue corner... Chery-macro Pat
:38:51. > :38:55.McCormack all smiles as he opens his Olympic campaign with a split
:38:56. > :39:01.decision victory over a really talented boxer from Kazakhstan, 2-1
:39:02. > :39:04.on the scorecards but it was a wonderfully impressive display,
:39:05. > :39:09.delight from the fans, the stands amongst the fans. That's how he did
:39:10. > :39:17.it, a 3-point margin of the advantage for judges A and C, a one
:39:18. > :39:21.point margin of advantage for Beat, but that McCormack are really
:39:22. > :39:24.impressive performance on it won't get any easier in the light weight
:39:25. > :39:29.well to tournament because waiting in the second round as the
:39:30. > :39:34.tournament number two seed and that is the Cuban, the tournament number
:39:35. > :39:36.two seed, former World Championship medallist and he is the man that
:39:37. > :39:43.awaits Pat McCormack after that terrific display.
:39:44. > :39:48.STUDIO: That shows you how things should
:39:49. > :39:53.work so Pat McCormack goes through and we will hopefully get reaction
:39:54. > :39:57.from him later. Still loads of texts and tweets for Simone Biles, we will
:39:58. > :40:01.hear from her as well, if you have just turned on your telly and you
:40:02. > :40:05.are watching back home now, Simone Biles is the new all-around Olympic
:40:06. > :40:09.champion and she was truly outstanding. We will get an
:40:10. > :40:13.interview with Simone Biles from gymnastics a little bit later as
:40:14. > :40:17.well. Let's show you exactly how things will pan out for the rest of
:40:18. > :40:20.the evening on BBC Four. We have some wonderful sport lined up for
:40:21. > :40:24.you including a bit of rugby sevens coming up very shortly. We will show
:40:25. > :40:28.you the bronze medal match between South Africa and Japan. Live on BBC
:40:29. > :40:33.at 11pm will be the gold medal match which we will seek Team GB take on
:40:34. > :40:37.Fiji. Fiji has not in their entire history won an Olympic medal, so
:40:38. > :40:44.they are guaranteed one, whether it's the silver or the gold, Team GB
:40:45. > :40:48.just squeezed past South Africa 7- -- 7-5, an amazing semifinal and the
:40:49. > :40:52.final should be cracking viewing as well. We will see Josh Kelly in the
:40:53. > :40:57.boxing ring at 11:15pm and plenty of badminton coming your way at 1130,
:40:58. > :41:03.including Chris and Gabby Adcock, probably Team GB's best bet for a
:41:04. > :41:07.medal and Kirsty Gilmour in the singles, and if you are watching
:41:08. > :41:11.last night we will show you the men's individual gold medal match in
:41:12. > :41:19.the table tennis. We saw the women's last night, we will see the men's at
:41:20. > :41:23.about 1:30pm -- at about 1:30am. On BBC One at the moment you can see
:41:24. > :41:26.the track cycling, it started today. The team pursuit, Team GB's women
:41:27. > :41:31.have broken the world record. The men's just missed out on the team
:41:32. > :41:34.pursuit world record in qualifying for the semifinal. The team pursuit
:41:35. > :41:43.codifying taking place now on BBC One. Over on the website and the app
:41:44. > :41:47.we have fencing for you. I'm sure many of you got into that the other
:41:48. > :41:52.day. A friend of mine said he was obsessed by fencing for at least 43
:41:53. > :41:54.minutes, when Richard Kruse was in action, live fencing on the Red
:41:55. > :42:09.Button and the sport app. Mentioning how many of you are
:42:10. > :42:12.talking about Simone Biles, it is getting windy down here on
:42:13. > :42:17.Copacabana. Gusts of around 55 miles an hour. If you see some paper
:42:18. > :42:21.disappearing, don't be perturbed! We have as much as we possibly can
:42:22. > :42:23.strapped down. Thankfully in the Rio Olympic Arena there was no wind in
:42:24. > :42:30.there because it was clearly covered over. Simone Biles in the same
:42:31. > :42:32.conditions for everybody else managed to produce some incredible
:42:33. > :42:40.performances to take the elliptic title in the all-around women's
:42:41. > :42:44.title -- the Olympic title. We saw yesterday Kohei Uchimura do it for
:42:45. > :42:49.the men, Simone Biles has dazzled us with her performance and we can hear
:42:50. > :42:54.from her now. Well, Simone, you are all smiles now
:42:55. > :42:58.but there were a few tears out there, as well, tell us what this
:42:59. > :43:01.all-around Olympic gold medal means to you? It means the world to me
:43:02. > :43:05.because I've been training so hard for this and even though I've been
:43:06. > :43:10.to World Championships I knew I had done it and to tonight I knew I had
:43:11. > :43:14.done it, but then I realised the importance of it and it got to me.
:43:15. > :43:19.People look at you once you make it look so easy but you do put a lot of
:43:20. > :43:24.work in, don't you? Yes, we do. We do have a day off tomorrow but then
:43:25. > :43:30.we go into training for individual events. Are you aware of how Biles
:43:31. > :43:33.mania is taking off because I know you have had tweets from Zac Efron
:43:34. > :43:42.and Taylor Smith, what it's been like for you? -- Taylor Swift. It's
:43:43. > :43:46.amazing, very cool. Will you be tweeting Zac Efron tonight? Only if
:43:47. > :43:51.he tweets me first. Thank you. Thank you. Are very happy Simone Biles,
:43:52. > :43:56.understandably. I promised we would get reaction from the boxing. Let's
:43:57. > :44:02.go back to the ring and hear from Mr McCormack, who was successful. What
:44:03. > :44:07.has he got to say for himself? A great fight, you dominated in the
:44:08. > :44:12.Olympic debut. Definitely, over the moon, I couldn't be more rugby. And
:44:13. > :44:15.through to the next round. What was the difference there? I saw a big
:44:16. > :44:21.right hand from you in the second round. Did you know you had it from
:44:22. > :44:25.there? I was catching big shots, I wasn't being caught with anything so
:44:26. > :44:30.I was buzzing. When you won that about the place here erupted. Why
:44:31. > :44:35.has your support come from? The atmosphere is unreal, I have my twin
:44:36. > :44:39.brother, Michael Mates, the full GB squad watching and supporting us.
:44:40. > :44:44.How much has it helps you question might over the moon, I can hear the
:44:45. > :44:50.voices come and shouting advice so that's good. The Cuban second seed
:44:51. > :44:54.next, how do you go about preparing for that? I will beat him again. I
:44:55. > :44:58.like boxing southpaws. He's one of the best in the world. I remember
:44:59. > :45:02.watching him at the last Olympics and thinking how good he was so I
:45:03. > :45:04.can't wait to get in there and beat him. All the best for the next
:45:05. > :45:15.round, see you soon. Off goes Pat McCormack. As
:45:16. > :45:25.promised... Stay there! We will do rugby sevens now. Team GB involved
:45:26. > :45:31.in a match against Fiji. Right now we will show you the bronze medal
:45:32. > :45:35.match between South Africa and Japan. We join it at kick-off and
:45:36. > :45:46.Sir Clive Woodward and Eddie Butler are your commentators.
:45:47. > :45:57.Can they now surprise one of the rugby world's giants. South Africa.
:45:58. > :46:01.Penalty advantage to South Africa. Their playmaker, Cecil Afrika gets
:46:02. > :46:18.through. A good off-load to Smith and Smith
:46:19. > :46:36.is away. John De Jong will score the first try of the semifinal. -- Juan
:46:37. > :46:40.de Jongh. An ominous start for South Africa. Very direct, very powerful.
:46:41. > :46:48.This came from Cecil Afrika with the clean break. Undoubtedly the
:46:49. > :46:56.strongest South African seven. It surprised me in a couple of games,
:46:57. > :47:03.including against Team GB when the coach takes everybody off. A good
:47:04. > :47:19.start by South Africa. This is a big game. Coming forth, there is nothing
:47:20. > :47:23.worse in the Olympic Games. I would be surprised if this seven do not
:47:24. > :47:29.stay longer than we have seen so far. Ten minutes each way in the
:47:30. > :47:41.final, as opposed to seven at every other stage.
:47:42. > :47:49.Lomano Lemeki. One of their playmakers. Goya. Japan have the
:47:50. > :48:17.put-in. Juan de Jongh and Rosko Specman. Not
:48:18. > :48:26.big players. But they were very physical side, South Africa. The
:48:27. > :48:42.backs, Juan de Jongh and Rosko Specman, causing a lot of trouble.
:48:43. > :48:52.-- Roscko Speckman. That is a big loss, the Jack -- Japan leading try
:48:53. > :48:56.scorer. A big loss to the Japanese team so
:48:57. > :49:24.Goya feeds, and quickly. Goya makes a few yards but this is a
:49:25. > :49:29.slowly -- slow-release for Japan. Speckman clear and a second try for
:49:30. > :49:34.South Africa. Japan have lost their playmaker and they are down by two
:49:35. > :49:44.drives. South Africa looking formidable. Speckman on a street.
:49:45. > :49:53.Wonderful footwork. Disappointing for Japan. Little chance when you
:49:54. > :49:58.have this fellow running down. A wonderful player. Cecil Afrika with
:49:59. > :50:04.the conversion, it should be a formality. South Africa will be
:50:05. > :50:09.disappointed, having played against Team GB. Surprised he did not keep
:50:10. > :50:14.his seven on longer. Played into the hands of the British men. So far,
:50:15. > :50:26.Japan have not really touched the ball, four minutes into the game.
:50:27. > :50:39.Cecil Afrika adding the simple conversion.
:50:40. > :50:51.Sending it towards Lomano Lemeki. A high tackle.
:50:52. > :51:15.Another penalty advantage. This is the captain.
:51:16. > :51:28.Another penalty advantage. Japan have a real chance.
:51:29. > :51:35.Great Britain when two dries up against Japan and then beat them by
:51:36. > :51:43.only two points. They will play and play. Their fitness levels are high.
:51:44. > :51:49.-- tries. South Africa just dropping off. Hope you get is not one game
:51:50. > :52:00.too far, the Japanese. A simple knock-on. Giving the ball
:52:01. > :52:11.to this very talented South African seven. Cecil Afrika in his preferred
:52:12. > :52:15.position. A sudden change of direction with Juan de Jongh outside
:52:16. > :52:26.him. Penalty to South Africa, this time.
:52:27. > :52:32.High tackle. Some of these high tackles...
:52:33. > :52:42.I really don't think that is... I am disappointed with this. They have
:52:43. > :52:51.been given strict rules but we are playing the same rules as 15 aside,
:52:52. > :53:03.and that would not have been given in 15 aside. I disagree with that
:53:04. > :53:14.decision. Speckman has had a great start, throwing the ball in here. Up
:53:15. > :53:21.goes Smith. It has gone a little wild. There is a strong wind. South
:53:22. > :53:28.Africa are playing into it. Japan with the kick, the penalty at the
:53:29. > :53:34.breakdown. A rare error by South Africa. They do compete so
:53:35. > :53:39.aggressively for the ball, when it goes to the floor after the tackle.
:53:40. > :53:44.Interesting, the Japanese in the last line-out, they did not seem to
:53:45. > :53:50.compete when the South Africans threw in the ball, which I hate to
:53:51. > :53:51.see. At this level you have every chance, in the abbreviated game, in
:53:52. > :54:18.completing the line-out. It will be Goya to throw in. Let's
:54:19. > :54:27.see the South Africans compete on the Japanese throw. They didn't! Won
:54:28. > :54:41.by Japan. Away comes Lomano Lemeki. A penalty advantage. A good angle.
:54:42. > :54:53.Kuwazuru scores Japan's first try. I am pleased to for Japan. Scoring
:54:54. > :54:59.absolutely brilliant, Kuwazuru. You have to go back to the line-out and
:55:00. > :55:03.South Africa did not compete. You have to compete in every part of the
:55:04. > :55:10.game. 30-year-old Kuwazuru, captain of Japan. How proud he must be the
:55:11. > :55:17.way his team have come to this Olympic Games. I am pleased for
:55:18. > :55:20.Japan. It would be great to see Japan do something special in this
:55:21. > :55:36.game. They have done amazingly well so far.
:55:37. > :55:43.Goya with the extra two. I would love the competition to
:55:44. > :55:49.restart. Lomano Lemeki, the Japanese playmaker has kicked well. Let's see
:55:50. > :55:57.if he can get onto the ball and win the ball back for Japan. The clock
:55:58. > :56:08.paused while Kuwazuru sorts out his boots.
:56:09. > :56:34.Dylan Sage. First chance, over half way. Players across the park for
:56:35. > :56:41.South Africa, including Speckman?. What a beautiful sight. Cecil Afrika
:56:42. > :56:54.adjusts sprinting onto that ball. Putting a beautiful pass into it.
:56:55. > :57:01.The Japanese do really well. Look at the speed of the ball coming back.
:57:02. > :57:09.This is what I love, forward, two hands. Textbook. Specman?,
:57:10. > :57:33.beautiful. A great conversion by Cecil Afrika.
:57:34. > :57:43.The half-time whistle has gone and a commanding lead for South Africa.
:57:44. > :57:48.Interesting watching these teams. Every team has a good starting
:57:49. > :57:52.seven, especially Team GB. We started our last three games with
:57:53. > :58:00.the same seven which is proving dividends. We seem to be better
:58:01. > :58:02.keeping the start team on the field. South Africa make a lot of changes
:58:03. > :59:04.and it has cost them. Specman, a beautiful pass. South
:59:05. > :59:11.Africa, 21-7 up. They look pretty pumped in the huddle. Keep your same
:59:12. > :59:34.team on, Coach Powell. They are the same for the moment. I
:59:35. > :59:38.wonder if they slightly underestimated Team GB this morning.
:59:39. > :59:44.It was a big mistake because it is a very talented British team. Put
:59:45. > :59:50.together by Simon Amor. I cannot wait to see them have a crack at
:59:51. > :00:00.Fiji in a few minutes. Cecil Afrika, downwind.
:00:01. > :00:14.And even cleaner break now, Kazuhiro Goya, Dylan Sage in hot pursuit but
:00:15. > :00:18.Goya scores for Japan. The South African As underestimated Japan in
:00:19. > :00:23.the first half. They won't now. Wow what a great try by Goya. This last
:00:24. > :00:36.week they have been amazing and Japan doing so, so well. He did
:00:37. > :00:42.really well, and this is brilliant. How good is this for Japanese rugby,
:00:43. > :00:49.knowing the next Olympic Games is in Japan and will be seen -- and we
:00:50. > :00:55.will see the seventh reach a new level and the next Championships is
:00:56. > :00:58.in Japan so to see them beating big teams like New Zealand, scoring
:00:59. > :01:02.tries like that against South Africa is wonderful to see. Game on, seven
:01:03. > :01:10.points and eight minutes to go. Nine minutes to go nearly. Will settle
:01:11. > :01:13.for eight and a half. One converted try separate the teams. South
:01:14. > :01:25.African captain Kyle Brown collects. Dylan Sage, back to Cecil Afrika,
:01:26. > :01:37.who lets Philippus Snyman take it. An excellent tackle by Yusaku
:01:38. > :01:40.Kuwazuru. Cheslin Kolbe is on, there is a change. Cecil Afrika clean
:01:41. > :01:49.through the middle and strolled it in.
:01:50. > :01:58.It say let's get on with it game. He's not a big man but his power is
:01:59. > :02:05.fantastic. What an athlete, what a credit to the Olympic Games. This
:02:06. > :02:08.guy can walk around the Olympic Village and compare himself with any
:02:09. > :02:17.athlete in any sport, just fantastic to watch. They needed that, Japan
:02:18. > :02:26.just coming back into the game. It puts them two clear scores ahead.
:02:27. > :02:34.South Africa 28, Japan half that number. I think this may belong to
:02:35. > :02:37.you, Cecil. You talk about the Olympic spirit and it is therein
:02:38. > :02:41.sport, I hope it's always there, it's certainly there in the rugby
:02:42. > :02:51.sevens, there's been hardly any incidents throughout the six days.
:02:52. > :02:54.Don't say that! There hasn't. Japan watch it bounce, I think they
:02:55. > :03:01.thought it was going out on the full. As it is, it will be a
:03:02. > :03:04.Japanese throw-in. There will be disappointed with that, let the ball
:03:05. > :03:20.land and then go out was a big error.
:03:21. > :03:34.Won by Soejima. It's gone forward. The South African doesn't play any
:03:35. > :03:39.less powerfully. What a wonderful sight this is on the screen, seeing
:03:40. > :03:49.these tremendous athletes at full tilt. Katsuyuki Sakai to feed the
:03:50. > :03:55.scrum. Those posts are not far away, they have a long distance to travel.
:03:56. > :04:04.Sakai held up by Cecil Afrika and then planted on the ground.
:04:05. > :04:16.Excellent pass, what a pass to Walker. From Hano.
:04:17. > :04:24.That's excellent wrestling work from Justin Geduld, he's won it back for
:04:25. > :04:32.South Africa and he's away again. Cecil Afrika. No sooner had Japan
:04:33. > :04:39.got themselves back into the game, then they see it go well away from
:04:40. > :04:48.them. Two tries by Cecil Afrika, South Africa over 30. You see the
:04:49. > :04:54.gap, it Speckman who is so good over the ball, the Japanese, that is why
:04:55. > :05:00.Cecil Afrika is so good he sees the space all the time and knows exactly
:05:01. > :05:04.what's going on there. I think it's amazing how they took this player
:05:05. > :05:09.off against Team GB, you see him play now and it's complete
:05:10. > :05:13.domination of the game with Speckman and putting the game out of sight
:05:14. > :05:18.with just four and a half minutes to go. What a kick. Brilliance by Cecil
:05:19. > :05:27.Afrika. Five tries, five conversions.
:05:28. > :05:36.Now you can load your bench, the game is won. The bronze medal is
:05:37. > :05:47.won. The bronze medal is one. Not definitively. That's better by
:05:48. > :05:52.Japan. Yusaku Kuwazuru saw him. That must have been high again on Kenki
:05:53. > :06:10.Fukuoka by Kwagga Smith. Japan work it across the field
:06:11. > :06:19.beyond the hands of Soejima. They have another penalty. The referee
:06:20. > :06:27.helping them out now. I don't think there was much in that contact.
:06:28. > :06:34.Right on halfway and Lemeki has come away again. Cecil Afrika outside
:06:35. > :06:58.him, try number six. A wonderful try. Cecil Afrika. A
:06:59. > :07:07.little bit forward, but the game is over here. South Africa are worthy
:07:08. > :07:11.of the bronze medal. Winners, ultimately they'll be disappointed
:07:12. > :07:19.not to be playing for the gold medal in a few minutes' time. Japan have
:07:20. > :07:24.to take great credit. For the last three days they've been tense seed
:07:25. > :07:35.and to make the last four is fantastic. -- tenth seed. Amazing
:07:36. > :07:46.how many kicks have hit the posts in the last three days. A change of
:07:47. > :07:54.kicker, Justin Geduld takes it because Cecil Afrika is off for a
:07:55. > :07:59.breather. What have Japan got left? It's been a long, hard final for
:08:00. > :08:05.them. That's an excellent pass out of the tackle although they couldn't
:08:06. > :08:12.quite get a pass off Soejima, not 11 that went backwards anyway. A
:08:13. > :08:18.straight sprint up the patch for Roscko Speckman, a hat-trick of
:08:19. > :08:23.tries for him. It's been a game too far for Japan. They have contributed
:08:24. > :08:29.hugely to this tournament, the best ever seven aside tournament but
:08:30. > :08:35.they've been taken apart by Speckman, Cecil Afrika. Again, I
:08:36. > :08:42.love seeing these guys run. Disappointing quarterfinal, you want
:08:43. > :08:46.close games. This match isn't. South Africa have been excellent but this
:08:47. > :08:56.has been a game too far for Japan. Justin Geduld adds the extra two two
:08:57. > :09:04.spec man's third try. -- Roscko Speckman. Is being the excellence of
:09:05. > :09:06.South Africa, I don't want to be harsh on Japan, the excellence
:09:07. > :09:12.especially of Cecil Afrika has been outstanding. You know, the number
:09:13. > :09:17.two team coming into the tournament and they are showing why. But they
:09:18. > :09:23.are playing for third place. Dylan Sage, back on. The hat-trick hero of
:09:24. > :09:44.the final, Roscko Speckman. Position for Goto. So close by
:09:45. > :09:55.Cheslin Kolbe. It might have been a try to go beyond 50. Have we seen 50
:09:56. > :09:59.in a game? We have once, haven't we? I don't know the answer! I don't
:10:00. > :10:15.think we have, I can't recall. That is so unlike Japan, they have
:10:16. > :10:24.been a little bit loose. Penalty to South Africa. They have one chance
:10:25. > :10:32.to hit the 50 mark. Deliberate knock-on by Teruya Goto. The French
:10:33. > :10:39.referee, just to make a long, hard final even more miserable. Sometimes
:10:40. > :10:44.a bit of sympathy from the referee, I don't think the spirit of what has
:10:45. > :10:52.been a great tournament, that that was necessary.
:10:53. > :11:03.Where is the gap? He can make them go wide, surely there must have an
:11:04. > :11:06.overlap somewhere. They do, it's Cheslin Kolbe and it's a
:11:07. > :11:15.half-century of points for South Africa. He's doing his best to make
:11:16. > :11:18.the conversion easier. Very impressive South Africa, well done,
:11:19. > :11:22.a little bit disappointing to be honest as the quarterfinal. You
:11:23. > :11:26.really want tight games and I promise you this next game, the
:11:27. > :11:34.final for the gold medal, will be a tight, close game. Cheslin Kolbe, a
:11:35. > :11:40.little bit of trickery to the very end, a little bit of deception.
:11:41. > :11:47.Justin Geduld, the very last act of this bronze medal final.
:11:48. > :11:58.52, or 54, 54 it is. The final whistle is blown by the referee and
:11:59. > :12:00.there is a somewhat muted celebrations by South Africa, so
:12:01. > :12:05.comprehensive has been their performance. Japan 14, South Africa
:12:06. > :12:15.54. Welcome back to a rather windy
:12:16. > :12:18.Copacabana on BBC Four. South Africa have won the bronze medal in the
:12:19. > :12:22.rugby sevens, beating Japan who I suppose provided the upset of the
:12:23. > :12:27.tournament back on day one, when they managed to see off New Zealand.
:12:28. > :12:31.South Africa take the bronze. The gold medal match is over on BBC One
:12:32. > :12:35.right now if you'd like to watch that, see if Team GB can get the
:12:36. > :12:39.better Fiji, who will win their first ever ever Olympic medal but
:12:40. > :12:42.will it be silver or gold? We will go elsewhere, to the National Tennis
:12:43. > :12:48.Center and bring you some live tennis once again. Andy Murray was
:12:49. > :12:52.in earlier -- in action earlier on, we showed him winning, seeing off
:12:53. > :12:56.Fabio Fognini and deciding set despite being a breakdown at one
:12:57. > :13:00.point. He hasn't had much of a rest, he is back on court with the mixed
:13:01. > :13:05.doubles alongside Heather Watson. They are taking on the Spanish pair
:13:06. > :13:08.of Carla Suarez Navarro on David Ferrer. We will join after Team GB
:13:09. > :13:17.are a setup, we will go back to Centre Court and your commentator is
:13:18. > :13:24.Simon Reed. Commentator macro three games all
:13:25. > :13:31.here, we have had four successive breaks of serve, two against the
:13:32. > :13:36.women, two against the guys. Andy Murray has just been broken, it is
:13:37. > :13:44.three games each, the first set was 6-3. Murray and Watson looking good.
:13:45. > :13:54.That good. They got into the draw because of the withdrawal of Monica
:13:55. > :13:59.Niculescu and the other Romanian, they got the chance, delight for
:14:00. > :14:09.both of them. So far, they are taking advantage.
:14:10. > :14:23.Ferrer had a disappointing singles when he lost in the second round.
:14:24. > :14:32.They are beginning to play really well in this second set.
:14:33. > :14:42.They have been onto the Soares Navarro serve consistently, have
:14:43. > :14:47.Watson and Murray. Watson finishing off there, good return from Murray.
:14:48. > :15:17.They have a chance to break again, 30-30.
:15:18. > :15:32.After the pressure she is under, this will feel like a break of serve
:15:33. > :15:57.if Carla can hold here. A bit of a brain freeze from Soares
:15:58. > :16:45.Navarro. -- Both of them got through to the
:16:46. > :16:57.Mixed Doubles draw on a single seeding.
:16:58. > :17:05.Murray rang two, Heather, 66. Which is why they had to wait for a
:17:06. > :17:11.withdrawal before they got their place. But eventually it came. Some
:17:12. > :17:30.powering home there. Murray knew what she was going to do
:17:31. > :18:00.and they have break point on her serve again.
:18:01. > :18:10.And there is the break. They have had five successive breaks of serve.
:18:11. > :18:22.Heather Watson's serve coming up is absolutely crucial. That is the
:18:23. > :18:26.British contingent. Over on Court number four, Jamie Murray is playing
:18:27. > :18:33.with Johanna Konta. She lost early today. That was in the match against
:18:34. > :18:39.Angelique Kerber. Quickly out in Mixed Doubles. It looks like they
:18:40. > :18:47.will be quickly out of the match. They trailed by a set in the second
:18:48. > :18:50.set. Jamie Wilby out. Remember, he and Andy lost early on to the
:18:51. > :19:01.Brazilians in the Men's Doubles. The pressure is on Heather. If she
:19:02. > :19:11.can hold here, they are very nearly through.
:19:12. > :19:26.Still very breezy. Not as windy as earlier on when Andy Murray played
:19:27. > :19:39.against Fognini. But still, pretty brisk.
:19:40. > :20:00.This, of course, her first mixed match since she won at Wimbledon.
:20:01. > :20:14.Wonderful for her. What a bonus this is.
:20:15. > :21:25.Great serve. No one enjoyed it more than Andy Murray.
:21:26. > :21:40.Really well played. Another terrific serve and backed it up well.
:21:41. > :21:50.Heather Watson and Andy Murray, they were unsure whether they would be in
:21:51. > :21:56.this Mixed Doubles and now one gave away from the second round. The
:21:57. > :22:30.second round in Mixed Doubles is the quarterfinal.
:22:31. > :22:59.Andy Murray racing in after his return.
:23:00. > :23:31.Close, but I think it did miss, and so does he.
:23:32. > :23:39.UMPIRE: The ball was good, replay the point. That is tough on the
:23:40. > :24:16.Spaniards. It was called out, overruled. Not challenged.
:24:17. > :24:26.Andy Murray was quickly in. A fine return from Watson.
:24:27. > :24:33.Murray was so alert, sniffing the chance. And this is match point.
:24:34. > :24:46.O! Some way to finish. What a day it has been for Andy Murray with a
:24:47. > :24:49.considerable win against Fognini and now he and Heather Watson are
:24:50. > :24:59.through to the quarterfinals of the Mixed Doubles. A terrific scrap.
:25:00. > :25:07.Look at the smile on Heather's face. They may have been late entries, but
:25:08. > :25:16.they could be important entries in the Mixed Doubles. Just an hour and
:25:17. > :25:23.six minutes it took. A number of breaks in the second set, but Watson
:25:24. > :25:30.and Murray are through. 6-3, 6-3. STUDIO: A great win in the
:25:31. > :25:36.Mixed Doubles. Earlier, we promised you boxing. Josh Kelly is involved
:25:37. > :25:40.in his second-round fight in the welterweight division. Let's go back
:25:41. > :25:52.and pick up with the commentary team of Richie Woodhall and big Ron
:25:53. > :25:53.McIntosh. We are in the 69
:25:54. > :26:02.kilograms welterweight division and this bout is between boxers from
:26:03. > :26:07.Great Britain and Kazakhstan. The man wearing red is Joshua Kelly, 22,
:26:08. > :26:14.from Sunderland, competing in his first Olympic Games. This is his
:26:15. > :26:16.second contest. His opponent is the number-1 ranked boxer the world. A
:26:17. > :26:40.hugely accomplished boxer. This is a
:26:41. > :26:53.slightly different type of southpaw. A little busier. The world number
:26:54. > :27:02.one. Poke some props in that jab. Mr Kelly cannot afford to make any
:27:03. > :27:23.mistakes. If he falls short is, he will catch him.
:27:24. > :27:30.He found his range immediately, despite having a lengthy wait to get
:27:31. > :27:47.his second Olympic campaign under way. Both boxers want each other to
:27:48. > :27:52.lead first. That was better from Daniyar Yeleussinov. Josh Kelly has
:27:53. > :28:00.fast feats. He has to work harder, throw some more shots, maybe lead
:28:01. > :28:12.off with the jab. Terrific use at the seat by Yeleussinov. Firing off
:28:13. > :28:17.punches of his own. Kelly was adept to evade many of them. A cracking
:28:18. > :28:23.right hand and Kelly forced a touchdown. That was a terrific right
:28:24. > :28:28.hand out of his southpaw stance. Kelly came back with a right hand of
:28:29. > :28:33.his own. Unfortunate not to have been given a count. The momentum
:28:34. > :28:40.took him down. He was on the front foot going forward.
:28:41. > :28:49.Kelly has to do more. We has to lead off a little bit more, faster,
:28:50. > :28:56.sharper. He will have to up the pace, Kelly. A very good round of
:28:57. > :29:09.boxing in the opening bout of Rio 2016. By Yeleussinov. Let's listen
:29:10. > :29:10.in. Relax yourself and trigger him off, will stop trigger him off,
:29:11. > :29:25.exactly. He wants the feint. Yeleussinov beating Kelly to
:29:26. > :29:43.the punch. That was not too bad. 10-9 across the board in favour of
:29:44. > :29:48.Yeleussinov. The number one in the world.
:29:49. > :29:57.Into the second round we go. It's a wrap rapid start by Daniyar
:29:58. > :30:04.Yeleussinov, who has helped himself to the most basic combination of the
:30:05. > :30:09.book, a 1- to out of the southpaw stance, and another moments after.
:30:10. > :30:13.He's going to be busy, busy, should I say, Kelly. You heard Dave Alloway
:30:14. > :30:19.sacred hymn off, so he wants the feint, he wants to try out to draw
:30:20. > :30:22.the lead of his opponent and go back with the fast counter, if not beat
:30:23. > :30:27.him to the punch. You mention the fact this is the second Olympic
:30:28. > :30:31.tournament for Danny Lai Yeleussinov, he was a
:30:32. > :30:36.quarterfinalist at 64 kilograms four years ago. The lead legs come
:30:37. > :30:40.tantalisingly close together. He lost to the opponent who took
:30:41. > :30:43.Olympic bronze and he followed a year later with World Championship
:30:44. > :30:48.gold in his homeland of Kazakhstan. A good left hand once again from
:30:49. > :30:53.Yeleussinov. A silver medallist from the most recent edition of the World
:30:54. > :30:59.Championships. A tangle on the inside, reflected just how dominant
:31:00. > :31:03.Yeleussinov has been. He has been the male elite boxer of the year in
:31:04. > :31:09.recent years twice, 2013 and 2014. He really is one of the very best in
:31:10. > :31:14.the business. A good left hand to the body from Kelly. But that gives
:31:15. > :31:17.you an idea of the size of the task in front of Josh Kelly, ranked
:31:18. > :31:21.number seven in the world, and he has to try to get itself back into
:31:22. > :31:31.this contest after conceding the opening round unanimously. He has to
:31:32. > :31:35.do a bit of work, Kelly, and at close quarters he has defined the
:31:36. > :31:40.room and the space. Yeleussinov is well 11 as you can see why. Very
:31:41. > :31:44.clever on the outside, working away with the jab. Fast with the counter
:31:45. > :31:49.also. Just stays a range, plans his attack and waits for you to come
:31:50. > :31:55.into punching range and then he will beat you to the punch. Occasionally
:31:56. > :32:03.this Counterattack. Just as you were about to throw a shot he beats you
:32:04. > :32:10.to it. He has fast reactions. He's a good kid, this fellow in blue. But
:32:11. > :32:13.this is the Olympics. This is the biggest stage of all for Kelly. He
:32:14. > :32:21.has to produce the performance of his career here.
:32:22. > :32:24.Ustinov looking to progress to the quarterfinals for the second time in
:32:25. > :32:30.his Olympic career. Wonderful right jab from Yeleussinov, stopped Kelly
:32:31. > :32:35.in his tracks. Kelly has to reset, regroup, and come again, but again
:32:36. > :32:39.he is made to pay a heavy price, a sharp right left combination
:32:40. > :32:44.knocking the man from Britain off-balance. He does his good and
:32:45. > :32:47.better work at mid range, Yeleussinov and when they come
:32:48. > :32:52.together, he holds on. It's a good round again, I think from the
:32:53. > :32:55.Cadillac boxer. That's why he raised his right hand and that's why
:32:56. > :32:59.there's the distinctive Kazakhstan flag being raised in celebration in
:33:00. > :33:08.the stands. A terrific round of boxing. From the number two seed.
:33:09. > :33:14.Fairly comfortable there, the pace has suited up. That's a long left
:33:15. > :33:19.hook from Kelly. That wasn't too bad at all, but we need more of them.
:33:20. > :33:24.Yeleussinov is more direct with his work, a great 1-2. Kelly comes back
:33:25. > :33:29.again with a shot but gets caught in at close quarters, look at
:33:30. > :33:34.Yeleussinov here with the laid-back just to ride the punch, take the
:33:35. > :33:38.power away. Again, Yeleussinov takes all the scores. So now, Kelly needs
:33:39. > :33:43.a 10-8 round across the board. He needs to put his man down, probably
:33:44. > :33:53.to knock him out to get the win here to be honest. Round 3. Going into
:33:54. > :33:56.the third and final round, the status of the scorecards means Josh
:33:57. > :34:01.Kelly needs a huge round or perhaps the punch of a lifetime, because he
:34:02. > :34:05.has conceded the opening two rounds unanimously against the number-1
:34:06. > :34:08.ranked boxer in the world, the reigning World Championship silver
:34:09. > :34:15.medallist, the man who took World Championship gold in 2013. So it's a
:34:16. > :34:20.two point margin of advantage for all three judges in favour of the
:34:21. > :34:28.man in blue. So Kelly has to pull something out of the bag here.
:34:29. > :34:34.Kelly is so talented. Qualifying for this, his first Olympic appearance,
:34:35. > :34:39.the world qualification event in Baku. His mouthpiece has come out so
:34:40. > :34:44.that will be rinsed and replaced. It's why Yeleussinov has retreated
:34:45. > :34:48.to the neutral corner. Yeleussinov clever there, you don't want the
:34:49. > :34:52.inside. Just holding on the blindside of the referee,
:34:53. > :34:53.experienced man indeed. He couldn't get his left arm free to work
:34:54. > :35:05.because of that. Good bright- left combination and
:35:06. > :35:10.Kelly is discombobulated once again, knocked off balance. As to resume
:35:11. > :35:13.his boxing stands and that left hand out of the southpaw stance has been
:35:14. > :35:23.a really profitable punch for Dan Li la Ustinov. -- Daniyar Yeleussinov.
:35:24. > :35:31.He has a fistful of domestic titles as well. Oh, my goodness, that is
:35:32. > :35:36.naughty from Yeleussinov. But it's Kelly who gets the ticking off for
:35:37. > :35:39.turning his back on his opponent. He is made to miss considerably here as
:35:40. > :35:44.he launches a speculative shot, Kelly. Now he needs a knockout
:35:45. > :35:49.punch. He has defined it in the second half of this round. He needs
:35:50. > :35:53.to pick himself up, Kelly, I think he is feeling the pace a bit as
:35:54. > :36:00.well. The zip has gone out of his work. It has with both of them, to
:36:01. > :36:03.be quite honest. From Kelly that's a bit better but he has defined a big
:36:04. > :36:06.shot, he has to plant his feet and whip one over, try to hit the
:36:07. > :36:11.target. It's difficult, Yeleussinov very clever on the back foot,
:36:12. > :36:16.difficult to land a clean power shot on this opponent. Most certainly,
:36:17. > :36:20.it's been such an arduous qualification routes through to this
:36:21. > :36:22.Olympic Games for Joshua Kelly, suffered a hand injury after the
:36:23. > :36:31.World Championships last year and while rehab from that injury was
:36:32. > :36:35.living the life of a regularly young man, out on the town with his
:36:36. > :36:39.friends, he had to work hard to get his weight back in check, there's a
:36:40. > :36:43.good left hand from Kelly, and here he is at the Olympic Games and the
:36:44. > :36:47.look of the draw, he has drawn a real threat for Olympic gold in the
:36:48. > :36:50.second round of this Olympic tournament after a terrific run in
:36:51. > :36:57.the first round against the Egyptian.
:36:58. > :37:08.Desperately trying to find that shot, with every punch. Back into
:37:09. > :37:11.the breach once more, good right hand on the bell but the punch
:37:12. > :37:19.resistance of Yeleussinov proving sturdy. And over in the red corner,
:37:20. > :37:24.well, experienced operators in Garry Hay land Day Valley Way, Josh Kelly
:37:25. > :37:28.will know he has been bested. By the number one ranked boxer in the
:37:29. > :37:31.world. But what an experience. He completed right up and all the final
:37:32. > :37:36.bell in pursuit of the knockout punch. Absolutely, you can't fault
:37:37. > :37:41.him for the effort he put in in the last round. He really went for it,
:37:42. > :37:45.caught Yeleussinov with some good shots, some good work, with this
:37:46. > :37:53.tricky Kazakhstan boxer. He was clever, a bit of lip service there
:37:54. > :38:02.from Josh Kelly. But Yeleussinov, lovely right up there. He gave it
:38:03. > :38:17.everything, Josh Kelly. Ladies and gentlemen, the winner by unanimous
:38:18. > :38:25.decision... In the blue corner... CHEERING
:38:26. > :38:30.The Kazakhstan supporters are absolutely delighted, because one of
:38:31. > :38:32.their strong contenders for Olympic gold, Daniyar Yeleussinov, the
:38:33. > :38:36.number one ranked boxer in the world, the tournament number two
:38:37. > :38:40.seed, has progressed through to the quarterfinals at the expense of
:38:41. > :38:44.Great Britain's Joshua Kelly, than -- the young man from Sunderland
:38:45. > :38:50.gave it absolutely amazing. He ran up against a man who hit the ground
:38:51. > :38:55.running and in his first rounding -- in his first outing in Rio in 2016
:38:56. > :38:57.but he has lost all three rounds from all three judges, 10-9 in each
:38:58. > :39:08.of those rounds, Josh Kelly. It was a bruising battle. What did
:39:09. > :39:15.you make of your performance? I enjoyed it, I performed better than
:39:16. > :39:19.I did the other day. I gave everything I could, that's all I can
:39:20. > :39:25.do. I have done everyone proud, hopefully. I can see you are still
:39:26. > :39:31.gasping for breath now, you left it all in the ring. It was a technical
:39:32. > :39:37.fight, you have to be switched on. It was a good fight, I can't
:39:38. > :39:40.complain. I have an won at the end of the day. What will you take away
:39:41. > :39:46.from this Olympic experience? Experience. Coming out and boxing in
:39:47. > :39:50.front of a crowd and stuff. The support has been amazing back home
:39:51. > :39:56.from everyone. Just like being with -- dealing with the pressure and
:39:57. > :40:03.stuff. I felt comfortable. What is next? I don't know, we will see what
:40:04. > :40:07.comes, see what happens. But hopefully I'll keep enjoying the
:40:08. > :40:13.sport and keep progressing keep going. Will we see you in Tokyo in
:40:14. > :40:17.2020? You never know, I will have turned 22 so plenty of time. You
:40:18. > :40:26.never know. All the best, Josh. Cheers.

:41:48. > :41:52.to produce the goods when it comes once every four years to the Olympic
:41:53. > :41:55.Games, a little shot of Jessica Ennis-Hill, could we see a repeat of

:42:00. > :42:03.Greg Rutherford, Mo Farah and so many opportunities for medals. There
:42:04. > :42:07.have been medals throughout the day for Team GB, we will update you on
:42:08. > :42:20.that, good success on the cycling for the team sprinters as well, we
:42:21. > :42:23.will bring you the headlines later on. In the wee small hours of the
:42:24. > :42:26.morning in the UK, 1:30am your time, we will show you the men's table
:42:27. > :42:28.tennis singles final. Last night we showed you the women's and tingling
:42:29. > :42:31.of China saw off her compatriot to win gold and the men's final will be
:42:32. > :42:38.between 2-macro Chinese, Ma Long and Zhang Jike. We have been to study
:42:39. > :42:45.China's long history in this event, this is a fascinating look at the
:42:46. > :42:49.politics of ping pong. Table tennis in China is more than
:42:50. > :42:53.just a sport, it's a national obsession. It is found everywhere,
:42:54. > :42:58.even in the vast rural hinterland or here, off and Main Street in
:42:59. > :43:06.downtown Beijing. The guys' technique is incredible. Think
:43:07. > :43:09.football, cricket, Dickens and the Beatles and add them together and
:43:10. > :43:16.you will have some idea of how central table tennis is to modern
:43:17. > :43:22.Chinese consciousness. It was here in Tiananmen Square in the mid-19
:43:23. > :43:26.50s that the little white ball first started rolling in red China.
:43:27. > :43:31.Chairman Mao decreed that table tennis was to be the sport of the
:43:32. > :43:34.masses. But this was not part of the public health programme but a
:43:35. > :43:38.straightforward political calculation. Chairman Mao reasoned
:43:39. > :43:41.that if hundreds of millions took up Batt-macro oddball, China would
:43:42. > :43:49.conquer the world, something that would bolster his leadership. He was
:43:50. > :43:53.right. In 1959, a Chinese man is astonished the world by becoming
:43:54. > :44:00.China's first world champion in any sport. He was succeeded by a man who
:44:01. > :44:04.won the next three titles. Chairman Mao hailed his players are icons of
:44:05. > :44:07.revolutionary virtue, making play-off the fact they used a
:44:08. > :44:11.distinctive pen holder grip where it is held between thumb and
:44:12. > :44:17.forefinger, a technique used to this day by the older generation. This
:44:18. > :44:20.was table tennis with Chinese characteristics and the masses were
:44:21. > :44:25.mesmerised. But then in 1967, something wholly unexpected happened
:44:26. > :44:31.when the white ball came to an abrupt halt.
:44:32. > :44:42.here at the national training centre the team received a letter saying
:44:43. > :44:49.the sport had become a Bastian of anti-Maoism. They were sent off to
:44:50. > :44:55.begin two years of hard labour. They were the lucky ones. The first world
:44:56. > :45:00.champion and two couches were put -- two coaches were put under house
:45:01. > :45:07.arrest and tortured. All three committed suicide. In 1971, Chairman
:45:08. > :45:11.Mao allowed table tennis bag of the world stage and again the
:45:12. > :45:19.consequences would be extraordinary. At the World Championships in Japan,
:45:20. > :45:26.a coach befriended a player from a Maracana and pictures of the
:45:27. > :45:31.handshake were printed in the press, leading -- from America. It led to
:45:32. > :45:35.an invitation. Richard Nixon called it the week that shook the world.
:45:36. > :45:41.Ten months later he followed in their footsteps. On behalf of the
:45:42. > :45:46.government of the people'srepublic of china has extended an invitation
:45:47. > :45:54.to President Nixon to visit China at an appropriate date. Ping-pong
:45:55. > :45:58.diplomacy mark the first step of china's re-engagement with the
:45:59. > :46:05.world. But the most curious episode in their table tennis history was
:46:06. > :46:10.yet to come. Once again China surrendered global domination, but
:46:11. > :46:15.not because of politics but because of this blonde Swede, who
:46:16. > :46:19.transformed the dynamics of table tennis with audacious spins. China,
:46:20. > :46:29.who still held to the pen holder technique, could not keep up. It
:46:30. > :46:37.took Deng Xiaoping to liberate table tennis. Allowing players to keep
:46:38. > :46:44.some prize money and to give up the pen holder style. This player, one
:46:45. > :46:48.of the new breed, revolutionised the technique when the ball was hit with
:46:49. > :46:55.the Riverside of the back. Perhaps the greatest irony was that Sydney
:46:56. > :46:59.Olympics, when this player defeated the ageing Swede to win one of the
:47:00. > :47:03.most hypnotic finals of the last half century and this ball will for
:47:04. > :47:08.ever define this extraordinary nation.
:47:09. > :47:15.I am sure you will agree it is a fascinating bit of telly, which sets
:47:16. > :47:23.us up nicely for the men's singles table tennis finals at 1:30am. We
:47:24. > :47:26.will not be able to bring queue all of it but you can continue to watch
:47:27. > :47:33.it on the Red Button. Guess who is back. They are there. The circuit
:47:34. > :47:37.trainers. Unfortunately, Antony Worrall Thompson is not with them.
:47:38. > :47:43.We have had an Antony Worrall Thompson lookalike the last few
:47:44. > :47:47.nights. Ladies jumping over the cones. A remarkable pair of
:47:48. > :47:54.trousers. I am not sure what she is doing. For those saying, go and join
:47:55. > :47:58.in, we are serious broadcasters on the BBC. We cannot partake of
:47:59. > :48:04.circuit training while bringing you the latest Olympic news. Which is
:48:05. > :48:11.what the Wii will do. A busy day. Day six in Rio.
:48:12. > :48:20.The headlines. We had a gold medal for Team GB in the team sprint in
:48:21. > :48:28.the Velodrome. A fourth Olympic title for Jason Kenny and a new
:48:29. > :48:33.Olympic record for the boys. Also an amazing performance from
:48:34. > :48:36.Simone Biles and team USA in the all-around gymnastics within's
:48:37. > :48:43.final. We showed it to you on BBC Four and she by some distance was
:48:44. > :48:51.top of the tree. Sadly it was not to be a gold medal
:48:52. > :48:56.for Team GB but Fiji have won their first Olympic medal. Gold medal for
:48:57. > :49:05.Fiji in the rugby sevens, beating Great Britain 43-7 will stop there
:49:06. > :49:08.was a silver medal earlier for David Florence and Richard Hounslow in the
:49:09. > :49:19.canoe double, as they did four years in London.
:49:20. > :49:23.Also silver for Katherine Grainger and Vicky Thornley in the double
:49:24. > :49:28.sculls. They just lost out to Poland. They were ahead with two
:49:29. > :49:36.metres to go but delighted with their silver medal after a difficult
:49:37. > :49:42.build-up to these Games. We also have seen a world record for
:49:43. > :49:54.the women in the team pursuit in qualifying for the semifinals.
:49:55. > :50:02.Normally at this part of the night we like to run through some of the
:50:03. > :50:08.tech and comments and questions you have sent. -- texts. We will do that
:50:09. > :50:14.later. We have badminton. The first time we have showed it to you on BBC
:50:15. > :50:22.Four. Time to have a guide to the wonderful sport.
:50:23. > :50:29.Badminton was included as an official Olympic sport in Barcelona
:50:30. > :50:34.in 1992. In singles and doubles the line nearest the net is called the
:50:35. > :50:39.short service line and if the server does not reach this line it is a no
:50:40. > :50:44.is served. Service in singles can be played as far as the back boundary
:50:45. > :50:48.line between doubles players can only serve as far as the long
:50:49. > :50:52.service line. There are five events at the Olympics of each match the
:50:53. > :50:58.best-of-3 games and the winner of the game is the personal pair who
:50:59. > :51:03.reaches 21 firsts. If the score is drawn at 20 points lead, the pair or
:51:04. > :51:10.person gaining a two point lead is the winner. If it reaches 29-29,
:51:11. > :51:15.whoever scores the next point wins. The server begins from the right
:51:16. > :51:19.service court, serving diagonally. If the server wins the point they
:51:20. > :51:26.will serve again but from the left. If they lose the point, service
:51:27. > :51:33.passes to the opponent. There are four main types of shots.
:51:34. > :51:39.The serve, the lob, the drop shot and the smash.
:51:40. > :51:47.Please can take many forms and can be played with the forehand or the
:51:48. > :51:52.backhand. The serve can be low, high, flicked, but must be played
:51:53. > :51:56.when the shuttlecock is below the player's waste. China is the most
:51:57. > :52:01.successful badminton playing nation at the Olympics and in London they
:52:02. > :52:07.won a gold medal in every competition. In fact, no other
:52:08. > :52:15.nation has won gold in the women's competition since 1996.
:52:16. > :52:20.This is where Chris and Gabby Adcock find themselves. They have been
:52:21. > :52:25.drawn in an incredibly tough group. We heard of the dominance of the
:52:26. > :52:32.Chinese. They are in with China, Denmark and Poland. And we will show
:52:33. > :52:43.you their first game. Taking on the top two from this group. It is a
:52:44. > :52:55.round robin. Taking on the pair who won silver. Team GB one set to the
:52:56. > :53:08.good. And your commentator is Simon Reid.
:53:09. > :53:59.Quickly in on the serve. A big guy. Six foot two. Quick to see his
:54:00. > :54:12.opportunity. More and more pressure from the
:54:13. > :54:50.Adcocks. A huge bit of luck. Probably feel
:54:51. > :54:58.they are due some. Nothing Chris Adcock could do about
:54:59. > :56:49.that. Good defence from Chris and Gabby.
:56:50. > :57:28.Once more seizing the moment and they are back in front.
:57:29. > :57:36.No wonder he clenched his fist, he was all over the court, was Chris.
:57:37. > :58:02.Forcing the mistake from Xu. Serving well. Few opportunities for
:58:03. > :58:20.the Chinese to attack the serve. Keeping it really tight.
:58:21. > :58:30.That was better from Ma. From the full force of Chris, a well
:58:31. > :59:08.manipulated reply. It is only the second point they
:59:09. > :59:12.have got on their serve. Getting a little frustrated with herself will
:59:13. > :59:31.stop but not long afterwards, the winning smile.
:59:32. > :00:13.So strong in the legs. So light on his feet.
:00:14. > :00:23.Again, precision play from Gabby Adcock. Keeping the serve tight.
:00:24. > :00:57.Very few opportunities to attack. This is a really good, healthy spell
:00:58. > :01:04.from the Brits. Quarterfinalists in the World Championships in Jakarta
:01:05. > :01:09.last year, Commonwealth Games gold medallists.
:01:10. > :02:10.Did really well, awkward shot. Xu Chen had no chance there. A 3-point
:02:11. > :02:30.lead restored. They were just looking at each other
:02:31. > :02:34.there, Xu Chen and Ma Jin. I think starting to look very promising for
:02:35. > :02:49.Chris and Gabby Adcock. Get shorter and we can go for a
:02:50. > :02:57.little bit, when they were picked in its fine, when they play a flat,
:02:58. > :03:00.come off, that's good. You are doing good. Take your time between points,
:03:01. > :03:07.keep pushing. Everything going according to plan
:03:08. > :03:21.for the Brits. Married three years now. They say
:03:22. > :03:33.their partnership on the court was long before their partnership of
:03:34. > :03:38.court. -- off court. So there is really any blame. A very fresh
:03:39. > :04:07.partnership on court. That was better from the Chinese,
:04:08. > :04:11.working much more as a team. Showing that they are not a spent force in
:04:12. > :04:22.this match. Still an awful lot to do to rescue it. They have been not
:04:23. > :04:23.comprehensively outplayed but definitely it's the Brits who have
:04:24. > :04:35.been on top. If that doesn't help their cause,
:04:36. > :05:24.the odd mistake from Xu Chen. They are working so well are the
:05:25. > :05:29.team are the Adcocks, probing for the opening. Chris just launching it
:05:30. > :05:39.at Ma Jin. This is their biggest lead. In the
:05:40. > :06:16.second game. Tricky to take, very well directed
:06:17. > :06:23.from the Crow one. -- from Xu Chen. There's going to be more of that. He
:06:24. > :06:38.has to take some sort of control now.
:06:39. > :06:44.That is a bad miss, a huge opportunity there. To restore that
:06:45. > :06:57.5-point advantage. They thought the shuttle was
:06:58. > :07:06.wobbling. The referee is not having it, so we
:07:07. > :07:36.continue, 10-13. That's well played. Starting to edge
:07:37. > :07:37.and nibble into this lead now. Ma Jin playing an awful lot better
:07:38. > :08:10.frontcourt. Shots that he wasn't missing in the
:08:11. > :09:07.opening game just starting to go astray, so the lead now down to one.
:09:08. > :09:22.Well, unfortunate, she played that rally so well did acrid to. -- did
:09:23. > :09:25.Ma Jin. Really homing in on it. She was there, the flick off the net but
:09:26. > :09:59.nothing doing. How quick he was, so light on his
:10:00. > :10:25.feet, then the devastating power to finish.
:10:26. > :10:53.Second time. Gaby has been called, the waist high serve.
:10:54. > :11:33.They are attacking the server. -- attacking the serve.
:11:34. > :11:45.Saw the opportunity. Crunch it down between them, but it didn't happen.
:11:46. > :11:47.This is a good recovery from the Chinese, who looked in a perilous
:11:48. > :12:16.position. It's now 15-15. Just being told that he is able to
:12:17. > :12:18.change the shuttle if he wants, but he has to let him know straightaway
:12:19. > :12:29.way to avoid any delay. It's nip and tuck in this second
:12:30. > :12:59.game. Ma Jin read that perfectly, on her
:13:00. > :13:04.way back as the serve was listed towards her. They came here on level
:13:05. > :13:21.terms. -- the game here on level terms.
:13:22. > :13:32.Miss read that, did Gabby. She wants a new shuttle as a result.
:13:33. > :13:52.The Chinese hit the front for this first time in this second game.
:13:53. > :13:57.There's a chance therefore Ma Jin, but in the end it wasn't close and
:13:58. > :14:30.it's back level. The Chinese are three points away.
:14:31. > :14:58.To take it into a deciding game. Xu was too quick. They really have
:14:59. > :15:14.worked better in the second game. Two points away now.
:15:15. > :15:20.A great return. They are not out of it. Taking this service point here
:15:21. > :15:52.will be a huge help. Such a clever shot. It was set up
:15:53. > :16:00.well. That smash. Lovely technique from Chris Adcock. They are level
:16:01. > :16:21.again. Now they are two points away from victory.
:16:22. > :16:34.Oh, yes! He had to twist his body to get to its. But brilliantly done
:16:35. > :17:00.from Chris Adcock. And it is match point.
:17:01. > :17:29.Ouch. The first to two points ahead, now.
:17:30. > :17:43.Yes. Could not release sees on the advantage they had. It is Xu who
:17:44. > :18:08.puts it away. -- could not really see.
:18:09. > :18:24.Just away. They fought valiantly, the Chinese. They looked out of it.
:18:25. > :18:33.They will change around in much better spirits now. That cued drop
:18:34. > :18:39.shot, but it did not work. It is one gay beach.
:18:40. > :18:59.-- it is one game each. Over on Court number one, the number four
:19:00. > :19:04.seeds, a point down, 18-17. Winning the first game 20 1-18. It is very
:19:05. > :19:14.close. All of the matches in this group will be close.
:19:15. > :19:24.But they really were getting their act together in the second game. One
:19:25. > :19:26.or two clumsy mistakes in the first, but out of the system in the end
:19:27. > :19:40.there. The sweeping of the court has
:19:41. > :19:47.finished and we are just about ready to go for this deciding game between
:19:48. > :19:55.Chris and Gabby Adcock. The world number sevens from Great Britain.
:19:56. > :20:16.And Xu and Ma. The Brits have led in both games so
:20:17. > :20:41.far. They will be hoping for the same here.
:20:42. > :21:11.No, not quite. Not quite working at the moment for Chris Adcock.
:21:12. > :21:35.This matches beginning to turn around now.
:21:36. > :21:40.The Brits have got to stop this little run. Momentum is switching to
:21:41. > :22:01.the Chinese. Two going through in each of the
:22:02. > :22:07.four groups, a different setup from 2012. The controversy, eight players
:22:08. > :22:13.disqualified after being accused of playing Toulouse to manipulate their
:22:14. > :22:22.place in the knockout stages and get favourable draws. They have reject
:22:23. > :22:25.things. -- to lose. There will be none of that here. Far from it.
:22:26. > :23:40.Super play. That was a terrific smash. Must've
:23:41. > :23:50.just got the line. There is a review system. Two challenges per game. The
:23:51. > :23:56.Adcocks choosing not to use one of theirs there. Strength from Gabby
:23:57. > :24:30.Adcock. A few more points they are picking
:24:31. > :25:04.up directly off the serve. The Chinese looking very healthy.
:25:05. > :25:24.Suddenly, Xu is controlling a lot of these rallies.
:25:25. > :25:44.The lead is stretching very quickly now.
:25:45. > :26:03.They just cannot get a run going these two.
:26:04. > :26:07.Gabby Adcock so sharp, quick to see the opportunity again. That
:26:08. > :26:25.dynamically. -- dynamic leap. She really was bossing things early
:26:26. > :26:35.on in the front court. But finding it difficult now.
:26:36. > :26:42.I think he was not sure whether it was going out or not. More concerned
:26:43. > :26:47.with the geography and getting the return in. -- van getting the return
:26:48. > :27:09.in. A huge smash. Shots like this
:27:10. > :27:26.measure faster than the Grand Prix. When it comes down from that height,
:27:27. > :28:01.almost impossible to deal with. Just doing enough to make it
:28:02. > :28:23.difficult. Did well here to recover. Just could
:28:24. > :28:42.not bury them early on in the point. Still four points adrift.
:28:43. > :28:54.The Chinese wanted a break but they were told to play.
:28:55. > :29:08.Really an impressive sight when he gets a high. So much spring in his
:29:09. > :29:48.step. The lead is down to three now. In panic when they went 8-2 down.
:29:49. > :30:17.Still very much in this match, Chris and Gabby Adcock.
:30:18. > :30:24.So, a new shuttle. A couple of points directly on serve would be a
:30:25. > :30:57.great Philip for them. Chris and Gaby have won just a
:30:58. > :31:05.couple of points behind their serve. We'll get back on that game, push
:31:06. > :31:10.too hard, they get flat and we'll react. The first movies get the
:31:11. > :31:18.block in first, down the sides then he starts with the new. A bit of a
:31:19. > :31:25.tight serving, compete for the shot, OK? Make sure we get right of the
:31:26. > :31:35.court this end when they press you. Type serving -- tight serving. First
:31:36. > :32:08.objective. Getting right tied up the court. Pressing as much as they can.
:32:09. > :32:19.Again, too much on it from Xu Chen Ford Gabby to be able to deal with.
:32:20. > :32:21.The lead goes to five. It's been as high as six. Looking very healthy
:32:22. > :32:46.again. Stranded there, nothing she could
:32:47. > :33:31.do. It's not a great return on the lead
:33:32. > :33:32.is back up to six now. It's going to need something monumental from these
:33:33. > :34:02.two to rescue this game. Gabby setting it up with that little
:34:03. > :34:11.short shot, then the athleticism of Chris comes into play.
:34:12. > :35:27.Chris will be disappointed with that one.
:35:28. > :35:58.The did that. A bit of fortune, can they capitalise on it? Get run going
:35:59. > :36:21.here. Put some real pressure on the Chinese number twos.
:36:22. > :36:37.It is tantalisingly close now for the Chinese.
:36:38. > :37:16.Just a few errors now creeping in to the Brits' game.
:37:17. > :37:31.That 5-point cushion restored. Very nearly home.
:37:32. > :37:44.Yes. If they are going to review it. It looked like it was going out, but
:37:45. > :37:48.it didn't really have the legs on it. This might well be in but they
:37:49. > :37:51.are using the review system for the first time. A review system that has
:37:52. > :38:05.been in play for three years now. A couple of challenges allowed each
:38:06. > :38:11.game. This was close enough for them to want to get involved. Have they
:38:12. > :38:21.been successful? It looked like it might have got the line. And it did.
:38:22. > :38:52.They really need a run of points on serve. It's just not happening.
:38:53. > :39:15.The energy seems to be going out of them. Has the chance come and gone?
:39:16. > :39:58.A sleight of hand, the movement there from Chris Adcock, and the
:39:59. > :40:35.lead down to three. So close. But now they are two
:40:36. > :41:05.points away from taking this opening match in the group.
:41:06. > :41:10.A bit of indecision and here are five match points. For the Chinese
:41:11. > :41:34.number twos. There it is! And they came back very
:41:35. > :41:36.strongly after a difficult first game, where they were
:41:37. > :41:45.comprehensively outplayed. But they got their act together.
:41:46. > :41:50.Disappointing start for Chris and Gabby Adcock. Still two more matches
:41:51. > :41:54.to be played, remember two from the group will go through to the
:41:55. > :41:59.quarterfinal, but that's not an auspicious beginning in what has
:42:00. > :42:03.been called the group of death. They are going to have to do very well
:42:04. > :42:08.now to survive, they have to win both their matches. Not beyond the
:42:09. > :42:17.realms of possibility, but the first much goes to Xu Chen and Ma Jin,
:42:18. > :42:27.13-21, 22-20, 20 1-15. I hope you enjoyed a bit of
:42:28. > :42:33.badminton on BBC Four. Do not forget we have table tennis coming up a
:42:34. > :42:36.little bit later. It's very strange to be down on Copacabana at this
:42:37. > :42:40.time of night because it's unbelievably windy for about two
:42:41. > :42:48.hours, then around about this time and it is, hold on what time is it
:42:49. > :42:51.here? It is 8:45pm here and the wind dies down at this time of night and
:42:52. > :42:55.the paper that was stopping around on the desk has gone very quiet.
:42:56. > :42:59.We'll bring you up-to-date with all the news here on day six of the Rio
:43:00. > :43:03.games. We have plenty of sport before I'll finish at 2am, but so
:43:04. > :43:10.much has happened today, so here are the day six headlines.
:43:11. > :43:16.Gold in the team sprint for Philip Hindes, Jason Kenny and Callum
:43:17. > :43:23.Skinner Team GB, a fourth Olympic title for Jason Kenny at the trio
:43:24. > :43:27.produced and new Olympic record. We have seen real magic from Simone
:43:28. > :43:31.Biles at the all-around gymnastic women's final, the American produced
:43:32. > :43:39.a gold medal winning performance. Britain's Ellie Downie was 13th.
:43:40. > :43:43.They are going wild in Fiji at the moment after their rugby side have
:43:44. > :43:47.won their first-ever Olympic medal in any sport, gold in the men's
:43:48. > :43:54.rugby sevens. Silver Ford Team GB, who were well beaten in the final
:43:55. > :44:01.43-7. Silver also in the canoe double Ford David Florence and
:44:02. > :44:08.Richard Hounslow, the same medal the 14-macro years ago in London.
:44:09. > :44:11.Katherine Grainger and Vicki Thornley won silver in the double
:44:12. > :44:19.sculls. They were not even meant to be at the Olympics a few months ago
:44:20. > :44:22.and now they are silver medallists. And there was a world record for
:44:23. > :44:27.Laura Trott, Joanna Rowsell Shand, Elinor Barker and Katie Archibald in
:44:28. > :44:27.the women's team pursuit qualifier. They sailed through into the
:44:28. > :44:41.semifinals. This is what you can watch at the
:44:42. > :44:53.moment. Team GB have scored in the hockey over on BBC One.
:44:54. > :45:04.0- 01. Team GB women unbeaten so far. And Japan taking on Belarus in
:45:05. > :45:12.the bronze medal match. We will take the gold medal match in the table
:45:13. > :45:18.tennis a little later. I'm just something about Katherine Grainger.
:45:19. > :45:23.An incredible story. She won a gold medal in London and silver medals in
:45:24. > :45:34.previous Games. She is now, if we were American we will say the most
:45:35. > :45:38.winningest. Five medals in total. On the negative side of these Olympic
:45:39. > :45:45.Games. Two stories to bring you up to date stop a Bulgarian
:45:46. > :45:59.steeplechaser who ran in London has tested positive for EPO today. A B
:46:00. > :46:04.sample is to be tested. And a Kenyan coach has been sent home after he
:46:05. > :46:11.posed as an athlete and gave a European athlete that the athlete.
:46:12. > :46:16.The retired sprinter was caught when his face did not match the
:46:17. > :46:26.photograph. The Kenyan athletics associations say they did not
:46:27. > :46:30.facilitate his travel. And a senior source says the unnamed athlete, who
:46:31. > :46:37.is shook up about this, apparently allowed the coach to use
:46:38. > :46:42.accreditation to get food in the athletes' village. When they said
:46:43. > :46:46.they have to test on a random drugs test, for fear of being exposed, the
:46:47. > :46:51.coach went along with that, they found out it was not the athlete,
:46:52. > :46:56.and he was thrown out of the game. We do not know what the truth is
:46:57. > :47:02.that we will try to get to the bottom of it. We will still receive
:47:03. > :47:09.your text messages and tweets. We will read some out before we finish
:47:10. > :47:13.at 2am. Just seeing a fellow jogging away in the distance. It is always
:47:14. > :47:19.busy on Copacabana Beach. Horrible weather yesterday. Much better
:47:20. > :47:25.tonight. The circuit trainers are back. Look at the lady in green,
:47:26. > :47:30.jiving away. Still no Antony Worrall Thompson. If he comes back, we will
:47:31. > :47:37.get to the bottom of why he wears that top. Maybe it is Antony Worrall
:47:38. > :47:43.Thompson on holiday. We can bring you up-to-date with sailing. There
:47:44. > :47:47.have been six classes. We can bring you up-to-date with everything that
:47:48. > :47:54.has happened with Shirley Robinson. A lot of action out today including
:47:55. > :47:57.three British sailors hoping to defend their gold medal spots
:47:58. > :48:07.including Nick Dempsey, the men's windsurfer. Dorian arrived early to
:48:08. > :48:11.set up for three races. The Dutch gold medallist would start the day a
:48:12. > :48:16.single point behind the British series leader. Dempsey arrived last
:48:17. > :48:24.minute, and when he got going, he was still on firing form.
:48:25. > :48:28.Race seven under way for the men's windsurfing. Nick Dempsey of Great
:48:29. > :48:41.Britain leading. Working hard to earn shout. Nick Dempsey approaching
:48:42. > :48:49.the windward mark. He has the breeze and he certainly has the speed. Nick
:48:50. > :48:56.Dempsey of Great Britain, he is on the right hand side. Wilhelm of
:48:57. > :49:13.Germany coming back from the left. There is the Netherlands
:49:14. > :49:20.sailor. Dorian van Rijsselberghe. This could add points to the buffer
:49:21. > :49:25.between first and second. Nick Dempsey of Great Britain working
:49:26. > :49:34.hard. He has closed the gap to Wilhelm of Germany. He, -- he feels
:49:35. > :49:40.the pressure from Dempsey. Look how close the race has become. Looking
:49:41. > :49:45.good for Nick Dempsey. I do not think the German counterattack. I
:49:46. > :49:53.think Nick Dempsey is pushing him out. More breeze coming down, the
:49:54. > :49:58.bottom of your screen, that is what Nick Dempsey is hoping for.
:49:59. > :50:02.Interesting tactical adjustment. You would never see a short tax putting
:50:03. > :50:09.like that that Nick Dempsey obviously saw that. And he thought,
:50:10. > :50:23.I will step up. He is screaming along at 14 knots. Fantastic sailing
:50:24. > :50:26.by Mick. Nick Dempsey takes the lead after a tactical move and
:50:27. > :50:37.overhauling the German. One small, down to the bottom. Germany finding
:50:38. > :50:46.good breeze. Wilhelm of Germany trying to roll over the top of Nick
:50:47. > :50:50.Dempsey. Great Britain answers with furious pumping, trying to keep the
:50:51. > :50:57.board going, trying to hold off the damage. Nick Dempsey working hard,
:50:58. > :51:03.trying to reel in the German sailor. Wilhelm answering, extending away.
:51:04. > :51:09.And now the jibe from the German sailor. Nick Dempsey does not let
:51:10. > :51:21.him cross ahead. On top of Germany to try to hold them off. Germany and
:51:22. > :51:25.Great Britain locks into a battle in the closing stages. Toni Wilhelm of
:51:26. > :51:32.Germany was leading. Nick Dempsey beat him on the up wind leg. But on
:51:33. > :51:37.the run, Germany getting their revenge. Toni Wilhelm working
:51:38. > :51:43.incredibly hard through the boom and managing to sail through the lead of
:51:44. > :51:49.Nick Dempsey. Toni Wilhelm snatching back the lead from Nick Dempsey, but
:51:50. > :51:54.Dempsey very close. Trying to position the board windward of the
:51:55. > :51:59.German. Toni Wilhelm is happy to say a low, working the red card. Nick
:52:00. > :52:07.Dempsey trying to work over the top. Both boards at the moment not quite
:52:08. > :52:13.laying the finish. Toni Wilhelm of Germany managing to pull away from
:52:14. > :52:16.the British sailor. Taking back the lead in race seven and Germany
:52:17. > :52:24.crosses the line. Great Britain in second. Nick
:52:25. > :52:29.Dempsey finishes race seven in second place. A fantastic final
:52:30. > :52:32.battle right to the line with the German and he has every right to
:52:33. > :52:37.feel happy. The tables turned in favour of the
:52:38. > :52:42.Dutchman as Dorian van Rijsselberghe row race eight. Nick Dempsey finish
:52:43. > :52:48.fifth. Advantage Dorian van Rijsselberghe for the first time in
:52:49. > :52:54.this Olympic Games. Nick Dempsey pumping his way, trying to get here,
:52:55. > :52:59.struggling to clear the back. Not a lot of breeze in his rate. Dorian
:53:00. > :53:03.van Rijsselberghe has done a superb job on the top breach, taking first
:53:04. > :53:16.place, while great British hopes with Nick Dempsey slip to nine.
:53:17. > :53:23.It would always come down to somebody and Dorian. He is the man
:53:24. > :53:28.to beat. Today I lost points on him, which was frustrating that it is
:53:29. > :53:33.brilliant to still be in the fight and tomorrow it will be a case of
:53:34. > :53:38.staying in touch. On the Ocean course, Giles Scott had a faltering
:53:39. > :53:44.start but recovered to finish his fifth race 11th and then slotted
:53:45. > :53:53.home a win to maintain the overall lead overnight. It looked like a
:53:54. > :53:56.mixed bag. I was frustrated with it. I have to be happy with coming back
:53:57. > :54:05.and winning the second race, which is great. Extended overall, but
:54:06. > :54:13.equally, you look at everything and analyse everything and it was a

:54:18. > :54:24.frustrating. That being said, I am in a good place. The British mixed

:54:53. > :54:58.Chris Grub are currently in sick. Thanks for that for getting in
:54:59. > :55:06.contact on BBC Four. I will get that bottle of water away! The wind is
:55:07. > :55:10.back. Steady on! Thanks for getting in contact to say you are staying up
:55:11. > :55:20.late to watch Olympics coverage on BBC Four. H says he is only watching
:55:21. > :55:25.to see if Antony Worrall Thompson turns up. Another says, I am sorry
:55:26. > :55:31.to say that Antony Worrall Thompson owns the pub round the corner from
:55:32. > :55:37.me so I am not sure he can be in Rio at the same time. Maybe that is why
:55:38. > :55:42.he is not on the beach, maybe he has gone back home to run the pub! Many
:55:43. > :55:48.questions need to be answered! Ben Eaton enjoyed the badminton, almost
:55:49. > :55:57.as much as watching Simone Biles in the gymnastics. Thanks for admin
:55:58. > :56:03.term after some idiot called it shuttler earlier on. What did
:56:04. > :56:23.Matthew Pinsent said when Simone Biles won? He said one by -- won by
:56:24. > :56:28.country Biles. We are going to pick up on some archery we showed you
:56:29. > :56:32.earlier. We showed you Naomi Folkard's earlier rounds are now we
:56:33. > :56:39.will show you a quarterfinal. A tough test for Naomi Folkard, taking
:56:40. > :56:45.on the South Korean, the second seed who has already won the team gold
:56:46. > :56:49.medal stop this is a sport in which the South Koreans are incredibly
:56:50. > :57:03.dominant. If it is the first time you have watched archery, we will
:57:04. > :57:12.show you all you need to know. Archery appeared on occasions before
:57:13. > :57:19.becoming a permanent event in 1972. The arrows reach speeds of around
:57:20. > :57:24.140 mph. During competition archers must stand 70 metres from the
:57:25. > :57:29.target, which is 1.2 metres in diameter with ten rings of values
:57:30. > :57:34.between one and ten points. The ten points ring is at the centre with a
:57:35. > :57:40.diameter of 12.2 centimetres. There are four event that the Olympics,
:57:41. > :57:45.individual and team competitions for men and women. It is split in two
:57:46. > :57:50.phases with the 70 metre ranking that determines your place for the
:57:51. > :57:53.head-to-head competition. For the individual, archers compete
:57:54. > :57:55.over five sets of three arrows The person with the highest score
:57:56. > :58:00.at the end of each set If scores are tied, each archer
:58:01. > :58:03.receives one point each. The first person to reach six points
:58:04. > :58:06.is the winner. In the team competition,
:58:07. > :58:08.there are three minutes to compete Six arrows per set,
:58:09. > :58:16.two per team member. They have two minutes to shoot
:58:17. > :58:19.all six arrows. The first team to reach five points
:58:20. > :58:22.wins and progresses to the next stage in their quest
:58:23. > :58:40.for Olympic medal places. Let's show you the quarterfinal.
:58:41. > :58:55.Commentary from the Sambodromo comes from Charlie Broome.
:58:56. > :59:18.For card the lowest ranked archer in this quarterfinal, seeded 23. And
:59:19. > :59:24.she has opened with a seven. She can ill afford any loose arrows like
:59:25. > :59:30.that. They need to be all in the gold, really, because if Chung does
:59:31. > :59:42.drop off, then she can take advantage. Here she needs a ten just
:59:43. > :59:47.to draw level. The number two seed has a 1-point advantage. Coming into
:59:48. > :00:00.the final arrow of the first set. So, there is a chance here for
:00:01. > :00:13.Folkard to tie it, but she needs a ten. So, Folkard behind in this
:00:14. > :00:29.quarterfinal already. She has lost the first set 26-25, and Chang
:00:30. > :00:37.Hye-jijn is two points to the good. She has had a lot of success in
:00:38. > :00:42.recent times, winning in the Asian games 2014, Asian champion 2015, a
:00:43. > :00:48.very tough competitor. Of course, a gold medallist in London already. A
:00:49. > :00:51.great opportunity for Folkard, though, isn't it? That is what you
:00:52. > :00:59.want to do, test yourself against the best.
:01:00. > :01:10.Of course, we meant Rio, we are living former years in the past! I
:01:11. > :01:16.don't think so. Let's see if Folkard can fire up here for. You have a
:01:17. > :01:25.great for years to come if you are! Well, a let off for Folkard now. Can
:01:26. > :02:04.she return to gold scoring ways? Chang finds the centre of the
:02:05. > :02:12.target, the first time either archer has scored ten. Folkard responds
:02:13. > :02:31.with a 10. 9, it is a tide set, and that is a
:02:32. > :02:38.good comeback from Folkard. Really good arrow, that last one from
:02:39. > :02:45.Folkard. That was needed. You can just see some British support here
:02:46. > :02:50.for her. That is exactly what Folkard did hear. It gives her a
:02:51. > :02:54.foothold in this match now. She knows it will go to at least four
:02:55. > :03:02.sets, because it is the first to six, remember. So it just puts a
:03:03. > :03:13.little question mark in Chang's mind.
:03:14. > :03:18.So, Folkard will shoot first, a gain on target one, because she is behind
:03:19. > :03:34.on the scoreboard. The two-time European silver
:03:35. > :03:35.medallist, Naomi Folkard. In the quarterfinals, on the biggest stage
:03:36. > :03:56.of them all for an archer. That is an excellent start to the
:03:57. > :04:02.third set. And that will just help her build a platform in this set.
:04:03. > :04:04.That is a great response from Chang, put the ball back into Folkard's
:04:05. > :04:19.court. A little grimace from Folkard as she
:04:20. > :04:31.released it, and that opens the door to Chang. 9.
:04:32. > :04:40.Even if Folkard finds the 10, it is still a gold score for Chang.
:04:41. > :04:44.Folkard needs to put as much pressure on her opponent as she can,
:04:45. > :04:50.and she does. It is a superb response from Folkard.
:04:51. > :05:04.So, 9 is enough, just on the bottom. But it will do for Chang Hye-jin,
:05:05. > :05:13.who moves into a 5-1 set point lead, so Folkard has to win sets for and
:05:14. > :05:17.five. Will we be seeing a similar performance from her as a couple of
:05:18. > :05:36.others in the quarterfinals? A loose arrow each set, eight 7, and 8.
:05:37. > :05:44.Consequently Chang has won outside the gold zone, but she has been the
:05:45. > :05:49.more consistent of the two in this match so far. So, Folkard in the
:05:50. > :06:25.must win set shoots first. This time, Chang can't reply, so
:06:26. > :06:26.Folkard with an opportunity to really put Chang under some
:06:27. > :06:51.pressure. Chang with the reply, yes,
:06:52. > :06:58.brilliant. That is just what the Korean fans wanted, Folkard knows
:06:59. > :07:13.that even a 10 might not be enough. It is eight 9. So, 8 will be enough,
:07:14. > :07:18.it is a 9, and Chang Hye-jin is through to the semifinals. It is a
:07:19. > :07:29.comfortable win over Naomi Folkard, the number 23 seed, by seven set
:07:30. > :07:34.points to one. And Chang just the two arrows outside of the gold,
:07:35. > :07:43.comfortably beating Naomi Folkard, goes through to the final four.
:07:44. > :07:50.Naomi, it wasn't quite to be, but it was a career-best. It is a long time
:07:51. > :07:56.since I finished in the top eight at an international event, and so I
:07:57. > :08:03.have had a really good week, and diarrhoea only proud of finishing so
:08:04. > :08:11.high. You were up against it in the previous ride with the crowd against
:08:12. > :08:14.the Brazilian. Yes, we had such big support in London, so it was
:08:15. > :08:22.interesting being on the other side. Being against someone in Brazil is
:08:23. > :08:25.good, I kept focus, I used it as motivation to keep shooting strong.
:08:26. > :08:33.How important was that result, not just for your sport but you? For the
:08:34. > :08:37.sport, it is very important. I think we will be more likely to get more
:08:38. > :08:44.funding for the sport now we have a top eight at the Olympics, and for
:08:45. > :08:52.me personally, it's... It is the result of 11 years of hard work. It
:08:53. > :09:03.hasn't been easy for you, has it? No, I nearly quit in October because
:09:04. > :09:08.I was just shooting... I had had a really fine season, the shooting
:09:09. > :09:11.wasn't good, but my coach, I started working with him and he turned it
:09:12. > :09:18.around, made things more positive. We didn't have to do a lot to my
:09:19. > :09:21.technique, just fine details, and I have turned it around and I am
:09:22. > :09:23.shooting a lot better now, so I am really happy to finish in the top
:09:24. > :09:28.eight, which I couldn't have dreams about a few weeks ago. You have
:09:29. > :09:35.spoken in the past about assessing your future after these games. I am
:09:36. > :09:39.ready for a new challenge. I might carry on shooting a little bit,
:09:40. > :09:46.maybe to compete against the up and coming kids. But I want a new
:09:47. > :09:52.challenge, get into coaching, or something like that. Very best of
:09:53. > :09:57.luck, well done. Thank you. Great to hear, very proud comments
:09:58. > :10:03.there from Naomi, her best performance in an Olympic Games.
:10:04. > :10:08.Over on BBC One, that is some masked! Team GB in the hockey
:10:09. > :10:13.involved against Japan, unbeaten in the tournament so far, Team GB, and
:10:14. > :10:16.they are going well, they are a goal of the moment, that was a penalty
:10:17. > :10:21.corner which didn't allow the Japanese to equalise. That is live
:10:22. > :10:24.on BBC One at the moment. Normally at this time of night we are showing
:10:25. > :10:28.you beach volleyball, that is available on the Red Button right
:10:29. > :10:36.now. You can see Germany against Italy, that is available on the Red
:10:37. > :10:41.Button and the app as well, and if you go to the BBC Sport app, you can
:10:42. > :10:44.find a full schedule of all the events throughout the day, and you
:10:45. > :10:50.can also plan exactly what you are going to watch, as well.
:10:51. > :10:57.Also available on the website, something I tried for the first time
:10:58. > :11:01.today. You can find the athlete that matches you at the Olympics. You
:11:02. > :11:05.putting your height, weight and age, anything else you need to put in,
:11:06. > :11:10.and it takes you through where you are any averages, so I am six foot
:11:11. > :11:14.six, I am in the 90th centile for my height when it comes to Olympians,
:11:15. > :11:21.and they have matched me to three current Olympians, Andreas for
:11:22. > :11:24.Uzbekistan, Nicolas Morata who plays volleyball for France, and Vladimir
:11:25. > :11:36.even off, it am into an star from Russia. We have a bit of badminton
:11:37. > :11:42.coming up a little later. We have seen Folkard making it through to
:11:43. > :11:47.the semifinals, she went all the way to the final, she had already won
:11:48. > :11:56.the team gold. We will see her now in that final, taking on lease Unruh
:11:57. > :12:11.from Germany. Germany have won medals, but Lisa
:12:12. > :12:17.Unruh will win their first-ever individual medal here, but can she
:12:18. > :12:21.get the better of the number six? Lisa Unruh is the world number 16,
:12:22. > :12:26.the underdog coming into this one, but we have seen the form book
:12:27. > :12:34.ripped up in this final day of action in the women's individual
:12:35. > :12:36.competition. Chang Hye-jin of Korea will get this final under way, and
:12:37. > :13:16.starts with eight 9. Just gets the line, and that is
:13:17. > :13:24.important for Unruh, just to keep her in this set.
:13:25. > :13:32.The other factor to bearing mind is the wind is inconsistent and can be
:13:33. > :13:35.unpredictable at various times, and we have seen even a good example of
:13:36. > :13:45.that happening right now, that wind going up to three metres per second
:13:46. > :13:46.all of a sudden. It is too wide, and Lisa Unruh can't take anything from
:13:47. > :14:06.the opening set. 26-27 to Chang. Huge expectation in
:14:07. > :14:14.the nation of the public of Korea. The expectation of gold success is
:14:15. > :14:24.routine in the country, and Chang here will be having to deal with
:14:25. > :14:28.that factor as well. Unruh has been super impressive so far in her
:14:29. > :14:32.matches. Even the shoot off to the world number two in the
:14:33. > :14:40.quarterfinals was really impressive. She is going to have to hold it
:14:41. > :14:44.together here. Chang blames the first set. So, will shoot first in
:14:45. > :14:55.this second set. Her composure has been super
:14:56. > :15:43.impressive. Unruh needs to find a ten if
:15:44. > :15:52.possible. She needs to get a foothold in this final. Ten! She
:15:53. > :16:02.gets it. She asks the question of Chang Hyejin. Which she can answer.
:16:03. > :16:08.And Lisa Unruh has levelled it up. She has taken the second set 28-26.
:16:09. > :16:16.It is two Sepp points apiece. That was superb from Unruh, absolutely
:16:17. > :16:23.outstanding. The whole idea is to keep your body on an even keel.
:16:24. > :16:28.Achieve what you want every time, which is a ten, then forget about
:16:29. > :16:34.it, move on and do it again. Chang has been super impressive as well.
:16:35. > :16:38.She is an Asian champion from 2015, one of the Korean archers that has
:16:39. > :16:42.been in and out of the Korean national side in recent years. Very
:16:43. > :16:48.hard to lock down a spot in the Korean national team. You mentioned
:16:49. > :16:54.she was the Asian champion in 2015 and a silver medallist in the Asian
:16:55. > :16:59.games in 2014. Unruh is the European bronze medallist from this year. The
:17:00. > :17:01.European Championships were held in Nottingham in England in the last
:17:02. > :17:26.weekend of May. Yeah, lovely rhythm. She didn't look
:17:27. > :17:52.flustered at all. That was almost perfection from Unruh. This is a
:17:53. > :18:04.small chance for Unruh. Oh, dear. Now, this is a big chance for Chang.
:18:05. > :18:13.A nine will win the set. Wow. Here is another chance for Unruh. She had
:18:14. > :18:18.a chance in the first set to tie it with a nine and win it with a ten.
:18:19. > :18:23.She scored an eight, and this time she can't take it either. Unruh has
:18:24. > :18:29.had chances in this match. She hasn't been able to take them, and
:18:30. > :18:35.as a result finds herself 4-2 down. She uses the third set 27-26 and now
:18:36. > :18:43.must get something from this fourth set to keep the gold medal match
:18:44. > :18:50.alive. She could be 5-1 up right now, but she is down 4-2. She won
:18:51. > :18:57.the second set and could have tied that set with a ten. But instead,
:18:58. > :19:09.she is 4-2 down. Those are the very small margins that can have big
:19:10. > :19:13.impacts in the sport of archery. Chang has been in superb form all
:19:14. > :19:21.the way through. She was terrific as well in the team's competition that
:19:22. > :19:23.career succeeded him as well. -- Korea succeeded in the team
:19:24. > :19:49.competition as well. That is mighty close to the ten
:19:50. > :19:55.line, but it just missed. Great start insert four. The momentum is
:19:56. > :20:15.with Chang. It is right on the lines for Unruh.
:20:16. > :20:28.Ten. That could be the gold medal right there. Unruh needs a ten, and
:20:29. > :20:36.even that might not be enough. Nine. 27. So a tour more will give Chang
:20:37. > :20:45.the medal. Is the gold medal heading to Korea? It is! It is an eight, and
:20:46. > :20:57.Chang Hyejin of Korea takes the gold medal. She wins the fourth set
:20:58. > :21:01.28-27. And Korea make it double gold in the women's competition. They won
:21:02. > :21:11.the team event, and they now win the individual. A wonderful picture of
:21:12. > :21:17.Chang, just taking in the moment. But Lisa Unruh will be disappointed,
:21:18. > :21:23.but she does win her country passed my first-ever female individual
:21:24. > :21:28.medal in archery -- her country's first individual medal. Delight for
:21:29. > :21:40.the Korean fans. Chang Hyejin is your Olympic champion.
:21:41. > :21:44.DAN WALKER: so Chang Hyejin wins not only the individual gold, but the
:21:45. > :21:49.team gold as well. You can see why South Korea are so dominant in that
:21:50. > :21:52.sport. Max sent in this comment on social media after watching Naomi
:21:53. > :21:57.Folkard and what she said after her defeat in the quarterfinal to Chang.
:21:58. > :22:01.Respect to Naomi in the archery. Shows that the Olympics is not all
:22:02. > :22:05.about the medals. She has done her sport the world of good. She was
:22:06. > :22:08.saying she wants to go into the coaching side now. That is it
:22:09. > :22:12.sometimes. I know the gold is the pinnacle of sport, and we have
:22:13. > :22:16.spoken tonight about a couple of silvers for Katherine Grainger and
:22:17. > :22:20.Vicky Thornley in the rowing. Silver sometimes can be a disappointment,
:22:21. > :22:36.and so can a bronze. But for others, sometimes it is just
:22:37. > :22:40.about being an Olympian, just about competing. Naomi Folkard came to
:22:41. > :22:42.these Games never thinking she would win the gold, but want to be an
:22:43. > :22:45.Olympian. At these Olympic Games, they are not her first, but she has
:22:46. > :22:48.done better here and progressed further than ever before. Max, thank
:22:49. > :22:52.you for that comment. We are running slightly behind in the badminton. We
:22:53. > :22:57.were hoping to bring you Kirsty Gilmour of Team GB in the women's
:22:58. > :23:00.singles badminton, a really tough competition. Only the top individual
:23:01. > :23:03.in each of the pools goes through to the knockout stages, but they are
:23:04. > :23:07.running behind in the badminton tonight, so we can't bring you that
:23:08. > :23:11.at the moment. It is at least 20 minutes behind schedule and we are
:23:12. > :23:15.only with you until two in the morning in the UK. So we are going
:23:16. > :23:26.to bring you some table tennis. Not the gold medal match, but the bronze
:23:27. > :23:29.medal match. It is Japan against Belarus. We join it with the
:23:30. > :23:48.Japanese ping-pong Star 2-1 up. COMMENTATOR: Mizutani still have to
:23:49. > :23:58.serve. Samsonov guided the return down the line with the flick, but
:23:59. > :24:13.has to put Mizutani under pressure. Easy to say from the commentary box.
:24:14. > :24:25.Much better return of serve there. Just can't switch off at any stage,
:24:26. > :24:32.can you, or you will be punished. He is going for that chop block, a very
:24:33. > :24:52.difficult shot. Keep it very low and tight over the net.
:24:53. > :25:26.A lot of backspin on the serve as he opened his racket, went under the
:25:27. > :25:36.ball. Samsonov didn't realise there was as much spin on the ball as
:25:37. > :25:44.there was. Lots of defensive work from Samsonov. Looked like he was
:25:45. > :25:55.going to lose that, but he kept at it.
:25:56. > :26:11.It looked like it went straight over the net. It didn't, just to clarify
:26:12. > :26:11.that in case you were confused. Samsonov
:26:12. > :26:27.Not quite enough room between his elbow and his body to get the swing
:26:28. > :27:06.he wanted. That was a wonderful recovery by
:27:07. > :27:12.Mizutani. When he caught the net, that changed the dynamics of the
:27:13. > :27:19.rally completely. Marvellous improvisation by young Mizutani. Not
:27:20. > :27:34.a lot of room for manoeuvre, was that? That came right into the body,
:27:35. > :27:38.swerving into Samsonov. Good top spin from Mizutani. Japan have had
:27:39. > :27:41.some great players over the years, but young Mizutani is the youngest
:27:42. > :27:50.player ever to win the Japanese Championships. There are other
:27:51. > :27:59.players who are household names to the table tennis fans. It is
:28:00. > :28:04.Mizutani who holds the record. He won that championship when he was
:28:05. > :28:15.17. He is now 27. Seven championships, a record. It is a 70%
:28:16. > :28:18.chance of him winning. He has brought the other young Japanese
:28:19. > :28:24.players through with him. In Tokyo in four years' time, I think Japan
:28:25. > :28:28.will be good contenders for quite a few table tennis medals. They are
:28:29. > :28:35.certainly hoping to get this one as well. The springboard to the home
:28:36. > :29:09.ground, with home support. He hold the bat very loose. That
:29:10. > :29:21.allows more wrist action to be put into the service action. You would
:29:22. > :29:34.not normally expect Samsonov to miss that. Just dipped on him. It was the
:29:35. > :29:36.topspin and the bounce of the ball. They are playing with plastic balls
:29:37. > :29:54.now. It used to be celluloid. To bring the Japanese of game point.
:29:55. > :30:03.He needs to win three more to be on level terms. Given the form of
:30:04. > :30:07.Mizutani... That is one of them. Good backhand return, a little side
:30:08. > :30:13.spin on that, it is a shot that has been developed by the players. You
:30:14. > :30:17.can see here it comes around the outside. They call it the banana
:30:18. > :30:23.return, it makes the ball curve a little like a banana. It is used to
:30:24. > :30:33.great effect from the forehand side when returning service. Couldn't
:30:34. > :30:42.repeat it a second time! And another point, just a point behind Mizutani,
:30:43. > :30:49.excellent execution from Vladimir Samsonov. A time-out has been called
:30:50. > :30:54.by Japan. The momentum was with Mizutani, but quite clearly Samsonov
:30:55. > :30:58.has put a run of points together, the momentum now with Brazil, and
:30:59. > :31:05.the Japanese bench knows how important this game is. A pivotal
:31:06. > :31:10.moment in this match, pivotal moment in this fourth game. And quite
:31:11. > :31:14.simply, there will be words of advice going on there underlying
:31:15. > :31:19.everything that is happening, Japan will be hoping to break them a
:31:20. > :31:24.mentor but quite clearly Samsonov had developed. And it is always
:31:25. > :31:39.interesting, the first point, there is a little bit of psychological.
:31:40. > :31:45.This will be significant, either fire Samsonov to pull it level, or
:31:46. > :31:51.there is a game point to make it 3-1 four Mizutani. Big point. Who is
:31:52. > :32:08.going to win it? We are just about find out?
:32:09. > :32:19.There is the answer to the question, Belarus's Samsonov. Cat and mouse,
:32:20. > :32:23.both players touching very tight, it hits the top of the net, a
:32:24. > :32:30.millimetre higher and it would have been a good backhand topspin. Nine
:32:31. > :32:36.points each, Samsonov serving, and therefore has to be the slight
:32:37. > :32:43.favourite to win. It is an advantage to serve in this game.
:32:44. > :32:48.Well, you are right, takes the point, and has a game point. Just
:32:49. > :33:16.the one. Vladi is the shout, that is his
:33:17. > :33:24.nickname. Oh, it is long! It is long, and it is ten apiece. So now
:33:25. > :33:29.we have alternate serving, and the first player to win two Clear
:33:30. > :33:35.points, but what a great rally. Tension of the highest order here.
:33:36. > :33:42.It is a tough game mentally. We have seen it is a tough game physically.
:33:43. > :33:48.Of the Olympic Games is the peak for these players. They will be
:33:49. > :33:55.desperate to take the bronze medal home with them. A great flick out
:33:56. > :34:01.wide to the left-handed forehand from Samsonov. Second game point.
:34:02. > :34:09.Perfect placement, you can see on the replay it was right in the
:34:10. > :34:12.corner. Another game point for Samsonov to make it two apiece in
:34:13. > :34:25.this bronze medal match. He wasn't able to get across quick
:34:26. > :34:30.enough, that was lightning quick from Mizutani. It is a really
:34:31. > :34:34.difficult shot, the backhand down the line, but look at that, under
:34:35. > :34:37.pressure, facing the game point, no hesitation. Very positive play by
:34:38. > :34:44.the 27-year-old. The number four seed against the
:34:45. > :35:08.number seven seed here. Air shot from the Japanese player,
:35:09. > :35:16.and once again, another game point. He is a battler, isn't he, the
:35:17. > :35:22.40-year-old? Never looks good in slow motion when that happens. The
:35:23. > :35:25.psychological advantage surely with Samsonov, third game point, but if
:35:26. > :35:32.he doesn't convert this, perhaps the doubts. To creep in. Third time
:35:33. > :35:45.lucky. Again, the backhand down the line,
:35:46. > :35:52.it was a great service there from Samsonov. Mizutani hesitated, he was
:35:53. > :35:56.going to play away from the table, then he hesitated and played over
:35:57. > :36:03.the table, but he still somehow regained control. There is that
:36:04. > :36:06.backhand down the line, Samsonov thought he was going to go on the
:36:07. > :36:16.diagonal, he made an educated guess, he guessed wrong. 12 apiece.
:36:17. > :36:36.Now it is the Japanese, Mizutani, who has the advantage of the serve.
:36:37. > :36:45.Having saved three-game points, Mizutani with a game point of his
:36:46. > :36:57.own. Heavy topspin on that backhand.
:36:58. > :37:03.Under pressure, then, the serve rotating every point, of course.
:37:04. > :37:27.First game point for Japan and Mizutani.
:37:28. > :37:37.Oh, it just took the edge of the table, and it is fortunate for
:37:38. > :37:43.Mizutani, he wraps up that game, and that gives him a real advantage in
:37:44. > :37:48.this match. You have to feel for Vladimir Samsonov, who had
:37:49. > :37:52.three-game points, played so positively in this match, and it
:37:53. > :37:58.just nibbled the edge of the table. Watch it from this angle here. What
:37:59. > :38:02.a great rally, top spin to topspin, and look at that, that was the
:38:03. > :38:07.finest of ages, a millimetre between winning and losing. And you know,
:38:08. > :38:14.for all the training and all the skill, you still need a slice of
:38:15. > :38:18.luck. So, that is how it looks, 3-1, and that was by far the best rally,
:38:19. > :38:22.by far the best game of the match so far.
:38:23. > :38:30.So that was quite clearly the key game in the match, Samsonov with the
:38:31. > :38:32.advantages, and we join it with the Japanese table tennis star on the
:38:33. > :38:42.verge of the win. You can see how much it means, that
:38:43. > :38:48.guarantees him the bronze medal, a 4-1 win over Vladimir Samsonov of
:38:49. > :38:55.Belarus. And coverage of the gold match continues uninterrupted on the
:38:56. > :39:13.Red Button, all the red buttons you can watch tonight. In the finals,
:39:14. > :39:25.Vladimir Samsonov will take on Zhang Jike, but
:39:26. > :39:38.it is Samsonov. We can go to the Badminton now. It is round robin,
:39:39. > :39:44.but only the group winners go through to the knockout stage, so
:39:45. > :39:45.every game is crucial. This is Gilmour, and Simon Reed is your
:39:46. > :39:50.commentator. Gilmour has made a really good start
:39:51. > :40:22.here, up against a lively contender, Jaquet from Switzerland.
:40:23. > :40:30.Kirsty Gilmour was a runner-up earlier this year.
:40:31. > :40:37.As you can see, she has moved out to a 2-point cushion. It is her first
:40:38. > :41:06.Olympics, Kirsty. S another fine rally. She is very
:41:07. > :41:10.sound overhead when putting in the smash. And dropping it short, as she
:41:11. > :41:38.did there. So, a 3-point cushion. Just long. They have a review system
:41:39. > :41:52.here. They are allowed two challenges each game.
:41:53. > :42:15.That was a good leave. So, the 3-point cushion re-established.
:42:16. > :42:25.Silver medallist at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, lost to
:42:26. > :42:32.Michelle-Lee Ahye of Canada in the gold-medal game.
:42:33. > :43:08.Jaquet starting to take the initiative a little more now.
:43:09. > :43:20.Really fine play, the behind the headshot, did really well to get
:43:21. > :43:22.that uncanny move across, and then a big smash to finish, so Gilmour with
:43:23. > :43:55.a 2-point cushion. Jaquet just starting to nibble into
:43:56. > :44:20.that lead now. First to 21 point each game, best-of-3 games.
:44:21. > :45:09.And she felt she had to win that points twice. Gilmour halfway
:45:10. > :45:18.through the rally thought the ball was going long, did well to get back
:45:19. > :45:29.with some effect. But Jaquet on a roll now.
:45:30. > :46:20.It's out. What a testing rally that was. 26 stroke rally. Plenty of
:46:21. > :46:21.variety. It was in the end comfortably out. You can see how
:46:22. > :46:51.happy she is. Nine points each. It is a pleasing match to watch, a
:46:52. > :46:54.lot of variety. It is warm in here. Already, the sweat is being mopped
:46:55. > :47:43.up. Just too much power for Jaquet.
:47:44. > :47:59.Gilmour, having held the lead, lost it and now retains it.
:48:00. > :48:25.A tricky shot to counterplay. Jaquet is doing well, staying with her.
:48:26. > :48:43.A little too wide. Jaquet looking very composed. There are three in
:48:44. > :48:46.this group D, these two, plus the Bulgarian. The winner of the group
:48:47. > :49:15.goes through to the last 16. Sorry, my Swiss German isn't up to
:49:16. > :49:17.translating that! But you can see that they are pleased with the way
:49:18. > :49:33.she started that. They certainly should be.
:49:34. > :49:52.A stern test in this opening game for Kirsty Gilmour.
:49:53. > :49:58.She is being pushed this way and that, Jaquet. But she is giving a
:49:59. > :50:24.very good account of herself. Again, a bit of indecision. Was it
:50:25. > :50:42.going in or out? But Jaquet has spent a good deal of
:50:43. > :51:06.the time on the wrong end of rallies. She has defended so well.
:51:07. > :51:24.Jaquet, with a 2-point cushion for the first time.
:51:25. > :52:04.Kirsty needed that to stop the momentum which was building.
:52:05. > :52:45.This is an impressive run of points now. Four in a row for Gilmour. She
:52:46. > :53:21.is back two points in front. Very difficult to pick a winner in
:53:22. > :53:53.this opening game. Once more, Gilmour quick to see the
:53:54. > :54:12.opportunity. Gilmour was winner of the world
:54:13. > :54:19.Grand Prix event in the Netherlands last year. And runner-up in two
:54:20. > :54:24.other Grand Prix events, so she's really sticking performances
:54:25. > :54:36.together, which is why her ranking is her best ever at 15.
:54:37. > :55:35.Plenty of time to towel down. It is particularly hot in here.
:55:36. > :55:39.Gilmour is doing a terrific job of manoeuvring Jaquet around, corner to
:55:40. > :56:30.corner, keeping her guessing. Should have made it. Nasty landing
:56:31. > :56:37.there. That was a super rally. But ungainly. And when she finished up,
:56:38. > :56:44.you can see she is favouring that right leg, which has a fair amount
:56:45. > :57:00.of strapping. And that was a horrible, jarring motion.
:57:01. > :57:29.She looks relatively unconcerned. Still with a 3-point cushion.
:57:30. > :57:38.Again, it was Gilmour asking the questions, but Jaquet has defended
:57:39. > :58:12.well. She is not out of this game. Beautiful net play.
:58:13. > :58:22.This is good rear guard action from the Swiss. Just a point behind now.
:58:23. > :58:52.New shuttle requested, and given. That is disappointing, after all the
:58:53. > :58:56.hard work she has put in, to make a mistake like that. Gilmour is two
:58:57. > :00:09.points away from this opening game. There is a challenge. Initially
:00:10. > :00:21.called in. She thought it was out. Looks all right.
:00:22. > :00:33.That is the game, all right. It looked for a while that Jaquet was
:00:34. > :00:39.coming back into that, defending so well. But Gilmour renewed her effort
:00:40. > :00:48.and knuckle down to business, and she is a game to be good here.
:00:49. > :00:51.So, first game to Kirsty Gilmour and that is where we are going to leave
:00:52. > :00:55.it on BBC Four because it's two o'clock in the morning and we have
:00:56. > :01:00.reached home time for us, at least. But badminton coverage continues on
:01:01. > :01:06.the Red Button. So does the table tennis final. Both of those will
:01:07. > :01:10.remain live on the Red Button, right until the conclusion of both those
:01:11. > :01:18.matches. The table tennis final is the men's gold medal match between
:01:19. > :01:22.the two Chinese players. Ma Long is doing particularly well at the
:01:23. > :01:29.moment. He is two games up. That is just about as for day number six of
:01:30. > :01:33.the Olympics here in Rio. What we always do, as I'm sure you know if
:01:34. > :01:37.you have stayed up until this point so far, is at the end of the day, we
:01:38. > :01:42.like to reflect away from Team GB and bring you three stories we think
:01:43. > :01:48.are worthy of your attention. This is our Rio Trio. We start with Fiji,
:01:49. > :01:51.who won their first ever Olympic medal. It was gold in the rugby
:01:52. > :01:58.sevens, beating Great Britain. They thumped them 43-7. Jubilant scenes
:01:59. > :02:07.not only in Rio, but also back home in Fiji.
:02:08. > :02:09.Miles wins the big one. Simone Biles with a jaw-dropping floor routine
:02:10. > :02:15.and virtually everything else as well. Success for her in the
:02:16. > :02:20.all-around gymnastic title. The 19-year-old is already the most
:02:21. > :02:25.decorated gymnast in history. And have a look at this for
:02:26. > :02:30.celebration of the day from Germany's Barbra in the women's 50
:02:31. > :02:40.metres rifle. She knows she has won it, she's off! Down on her knees.
:02:41. > :02:45.And she didn't just save it for when she was in her full kit, by the way.
:02:46. > :02:51.If you wait for a moment, you will see her on the podium. She is off
:02:52. > :02:55.again, and why not? She has won the gold. She finished sixth in 2012,
:02:56. > :03:01.and you can see how much that gold medal means to her.
:03:02. > :03:05.But David Team GB as well, won gold in three silvers -- great day for
:03:06. > :03:10.Team GB. If you stay up and switched to BBC One, you can see a man going
:03:11. > :03:14.for his 22nd gold all on his own. He had help with the relays, but we are
:03:15. > :03:18.talking about Michael Phelps. At three o'clock UK time, you can see
:03:19. > :03:24.him taking on fellow countryman Ryan Lochte in the 200 individual medley.
:03:25. > :03:29.That is in one hour on BBC One. Tomorrow, Friday, well, it is Friday
:03:30. > :03:33.already, but Jessica Ennis-Hill and Katarina Johnson-Thompson are in
:03:34. > :03:35.action from about 1.30 on day one of the women's heptathlon. Loads to
:03:36. > :03:38.look
