:00:00. > :00:00.of the coaching staff, what was their response? And how tight was

:00:00. > :00:00.the race? They were on schedule the whole way, that is what they were

:00:00. > :00:09.riding too, they had no idea what the Australians would deliver, they

:00:10. > :00:13.trusted the process and stuck to the schedule they were riding. They were

:00:14. > :00:17.so cool, the British team, all of them, from the management, doctors,

:00:18. > :00:22.everybody, they stick to what they do. They were nervous but they stuck

:00:23. > :00:25.to what they do best, the Australians, I spoke afterwards,

:00:26. > :00:31.they gave it everything. They had no answer to it. What do you suspect

:00:32. > :00:36.Bradley, Ed, Stephen and Owain will be up to now? Right now they are

:00:37. > :00:40.still in there talking to the press and international broadcasters. I

:00:41. > :00:43.can guess what they'll be doing in a short space of time. I won't expect

:00:44. > :00:47.them to be up early tomorrow morning. Mark Cavendish their

:00:48. > :00:52.team-mate, riding the Army, said he would struggle to get any sleep

:00:53. > :00:55.tonight. Hopefully they won't come back at all. -- riding the Omnium.

:00:56. > :01:05.An Callum The individual sprinters looked

:01:06. > :01:10.great. Everybody will be looking at them and know how strong they are

:01:11. > :01:14.and that, you know, meddles with the opponents' minds. So they've not put

:01:15. > :01:19.a foot wrong. They are on course if everything keeps going well to meet

:01:20. > :01:25.in the gold medal race. Let's have a look at the medal table.

:01:26. > :01:30.For British fans, it makes for good reading.

:01:31. > :01:36.Obviously Michael Phelps is the star of the show but the United States

:01:37. > :01:40.are having a very, very good Games. So too are China. Great Britain in

:01:41. > :01:45.third, level on golds with Japan but more in terms of... Actually, no,

:01:46. > :01:49.more silvers. That's what it is. Republic of Korea, South Korea, in

:01:50. > :01:53.fifth. And Germany, Australia, France, Hungary and Russia coming up

:01:54. > :01:58.behind. Could there be more medals to come, if not later tonight then

:01:59. > :02:08.certainly tomorrow? The heptathlon will continue later tonight, the

:02:09. > :02:11.shot put and the 200m. Jason Mohammad will take over at

:02:12. > :02:17.midnight. He'll have live swimming. More Michael Phelps tonight. He was

:02:18. > :02:22.really emotional yesterday. His 22nd gold medal. Nobody has ever seen him

:02:23. > :02:27.react like that. And the first person ever to defend a title for

:02:28. > :02:30.four Olympics in a row. He's beaten four generations of other swimmers.

:02:31. > :02:33.He's going to continue that tonight. And Jason will have the first

:02:34. > :03:11.evening session of track and field. He's going to be the Olympic

:03:12. > :03:17.Champion! Usain Bolt is pulling away! He's

:03:18. > :03:38.going to win the gold! The champion becomes a legend!

:03:39. > :03:43.He's the double Olympic Champion! Have you ever seen anything like

:03:44. > :03:50.that? Thanks to Claire and the team.

:03:51. > :03:54.Hello. A very good evening to you. Day seven of the Olympic Games, and

:03:55. > :03:58.the biggest and fittest sports stars on the planet are in Rio. The

:03:59. > :04:04.athletics is under way. Four years of hard work, of blood, of sweat and

:04:05. > :04:10.tears, and this, now, is the time of ruther Ford, of Jessica Ennis-Hill

:04:11. > :04:11.and, of course, Usain Bolt. This is what's coming up

:04:12. > :04:19.tonight: The defending champion, Jessica

:04:20. > :04:23.Ennis-Hill in bronze position after a thrilling first morning of the

:04:24. > :04:37.heptathlon. Tonight it's the shot put and 200m. But Great Britain's

:04:38. > :04:42.Katarina Johnson-Thompson is in gold medal position in the high jump.

:04:43. > :04:48.Rio-ready for ruther Ford. The Olympic champ gets his Games up and

:04:49. > :04:52.running in the long jump. On the track, Laura Muir broke Kelly

:04:53. > :04:58.Holmes British record in the anniversary Games. She goes in the

:04:59. > :05:05.1,500m shortly. But we shall also see another Laura

:05:06. > :05:13.in the 1,500m before that, Laura Weightman, European bronze

:05:14. > :05:22.medallist, going very, very soon. Wayde van Niekerk begins his quest

:05:23. > :05:28.for Olympic glory in the 400m. And GB's Matthew Hudson-Smith from

:05:29. > :05:35.wolf Hamilton goes in heat six up against the Olympic champ.

:05:36. > :05:40.But also, what a few days we've had in the Olympic Aquatic Stadium. This

:05:41. > :05:44.is the scene in Baja. If you've been with us over the last couple of

:05:45. > :05:48.evenings on BBC One, you will have enjoyed every single moment. Four

:05:49. > :05:53.gold medals to be won this evening and this wonderful venue could yet

:05:54. > :06:06.again witness history. You-know-who is back in the water.

:06:07. > :06:17.A huge gold medal to Michael Phelps! A new world record! I wonder if we

:06:18. > :06:21.have someone who will replace Spitz as the greatest swimmer ever.

:06:22. > :06:23.# Maybe I'm foolish # Maybe I'm blind

:06:24. > :06:28.# Thinking I can see through this and see what's behind. Can Phelps go

:06:29. > :06:33.eight golds in eight days. # But I'm only human after all...

:06:34. > :06:38.He's trying to set Olympic history. He's trying to set swimming history!

:06:39. > :06:47.Eight days, eight gold medals, Michael Phelps is the greatest.

:06:48. > :06:53.These are his last Olympics. He will go out as the best ever.

:06:54. > :07:01.# I'm only human after all... The biggest Olympic medallist in

:07:02. > :07:05.history! No-one has won more! # Oh, some people got real problems

:07:06. > :07:11.# Some people got to love... Michael Phelps is back. Swimming legend

:07:12. > :07:15.Michael Phelps is coming out of retirement. US Olympic swimmer

:07:16. > :07:18.Michael Phelps has been arrested for driving under the influence. Michael

:07:19. > :07:22.Phelps has been arrested. He will not be allowed to represent the

:07:23. > :07:24.United States. Banned from competing for the United States for six

:07:25. > :07:30.months. # I'm only human after all...

:07:31. > :07:36.Michael Phelps is heading to Rio... A showdown in Rio looms ahead.

:07:37. > :07:41.Unbelievable from Phelps. That's his 22nd Olympic gold medal.

:07:42. > :07:44.It has been amazing over the past couple of evenings. It's not just

:07:45. > :07:54.about America's man of steel, though, this evening. Plenty of

:07:55. > :07:59.other stars in action too. She's also won a silver medal in the

:08:00. > :08:05.400m freestyle and now Jazz Carlin goes for gold in the 800m.

:08:06. > :08:13.But USA's Katie Ledecky is going for her fourth gold of Rio 2016 in the

:08:14. > :08:20.final in about two hours' time. There's also the final of the 50m

:08:21. > :08:25.freestyle. France's Florent Manaudou is the reigning Olympic and World

:08:26. > :08:29.Champion. And Great Britain need Ben Proud to recreate the form which saw

:08:30. > :08:37.him when Commonwealth gold back in 2014. And you will also remember

:08:38. > :08:46.Great Britain's Fran Halsall won gold in Glasgow. She's looking to

:08:47. > :08:50.seal a place in the final. It is a packed night at the

:08:51. > :08:57.Olympics. Day one of track and field continues with heptathlon and a

:08:58. > :09:00.battle between Jessica Ennis-Hill and Katarina Johnson-Thompson. We'll

:09:01. > :09:05.update that shortly and also the heats in the men's 400m and the

:09:06. > :09:08.women's 100m. Reigning Olympic Champion Greg ruther Ford against

:09:09. > :09:13.his long jump defence under way in qualifying. Four golds will be

:09:14. > :09:17.decided in the pool. Michael Phelps looking for Olympic title 23. Jazz

:09:18. > :09:22.Carlin is a great medal chance in the 800m freestyle and there's the

:09:23. > :09:25.finals in the women's 200m backstroke and the men's 50m

:09:26. > :09:31.freestyle. How can you even think of going to bed? You have to stay with

:09:32. > :09:34.us. On the Freeview red button there

:09:35. > :09:37.will be uninterrupted coverage of track and field so if you want to

:09:38. > :09:41.watch athletics all night and nothing else, press the red button.

:09:42. > :09:45.Also if you want to watch the tennis, that's also available this

:09:46. > :09:50.evening. Men's doubles, gold medal match, Spain against Romania. Rafah

:09:51. > :09:54.Nadal in action tonight. And also on the -- Rafa Nadal in action tonight.

:09:55. > :09:59.And also on Freeview there's live coverage of Brazil against Australia

:10:00. > :10:03.in the quarterfinal from 2:00am. So we are going to be ducking and

:10:04. > :10:07.diving in between the swimming and the athletics all evening. Do stay

:10:08. > :10:12.with us. I'm delighted to say, though, let's now talk to the legend

:10:13. > :10:15.who has joined us for the BBC team for these Rio Olympics, Mr Michael

:10:16. > :10:18.Johnson joins us once again. Michael, hello. A very good evening.

:10:19. > :10:22.It's great to see you. Listen, what have you made of the Games so far?

:10:23. > :10:26.Yeah, it's been great so far. You know, once the athletics starts, the

:10:27. > :10:30.events in the pool and then in the gym with the gymnastics and all of

:10:31. > :10:35.the other events, archery and all of that sort of thing, all of the talk

:10:36. > :10:38.about Rio's preparations and the Russians and whether or not they're

:10:39. > :10:41.banned or should be or shouldn't be, all of that sort of fades into the

:10:42. > :10:44.background and then it's all about the competition and when it's the

:10:45. > :10:48.Olympic Games, it really doesn't matter where it is. You've got the

:10:49. > :10:51.greatest athletes at their best and it's always compelling watching.

:10:52. > :10:54.Michael, how do you feel about the ticket sales. Organisers are saying

:10:55. > :10:58.that ticket sales would be pretty good ahead of the Games and yet on

:10:59. > :11:02.the opening morning of the track and field, we see empty seats. Does that

:11:03. > :11:07.bother you? I think this morning the weather was a mess and that may have

:11:08. > :11:11.affected things a little bit. But look, this has been the case all

:11:12. > :11:15.along that there was fears that the Brazilian public would not support

:11:16. > :11:18.the Games as much as we've seen in the past, certainly in comparison to

:11:19. > :11:23.London, um... And that was always going to be the case, I believe.

:11:24. > :11:26.That you wouldn't see as many people turning up and coming out for the

:11:27. > :11:30.events. I know that lots of Americans - I think the number of

:11:31. > :11:35.Americans that were, um, planned... Or expected to come down for the

:11:36. > :11:39.Games ended up halved in the end, about half of the people who were

:11:40. > :11:43.supposed to come came so, you know, we could well see that over the next

:11:44. > :11:45.few days, you know, a stadium that's not completely full and that's

:11:46. > :11:50.unfortunate. Well, Michael, it's their loss

:11:51. > :11:58.because they missed a world record today.

:11:59. > :12:02.Was that a surprise for you? It was a record from 1993. Many people

:12:03. > :12:11.wanted to see that broken over the years and now we have it. It was an

:12:12. > :12:16.impressive race all the way through. But, you know, 14 seconds - that's

:12:17. > :12:23.just a massive amount, but a fantastic performance. I think the

:12:24. > :12:29.American winner won by 30 seconds I believe so it was an impressive

:12:30. > :12:34.race. The 10,000m was tactical -- less

:12:35. > :12:38.tactical for a change and it was impressive for the athletics. Given

:12:39. > :12:42.what's going on in the track and field, a sport you dearly love and

:12:43. > :12:45.we all love, is it a pretty sad state of affairs that there will be

:12:46. > :12:48.people who are looking at what's happening with a hint of suspicion?

:12:49. > :12:53.Absolutely. The credibility of the sport... And of the Olympic movement

:12:54. > :12:56.itself has been dramatically hindered with -- has been hit

:12:57. > :12:59.dramatically with all of the different allegations of recent

:13:00. > :13:03.times, with the Russian situation unfolding, particularly what has

:13:04. > :13:08.happened in athletics over the last year with the IAAF and allegations

:13:09. > :13:14.of the IAAF being complicit in covering up tests and taking... .

:13:15. > :13:18.Um... Taking bribes to cover up tests of athletes who have tested

:13:19. > :13:21.positive. It's going to take some time to restore credibility in the

:13:22. > :13:25.sport and I think that, um, you know, the recent banning of the

:13:26. > :13:31.entire Russian team from athletics here in Rio is a step in the right

:13:32. > :13:35.direction. But it's going to take a series of right decisions and puting

:13:36. > :13:39.the right foot in the right place and putting things right time and

:13:40. > :13:43.time and time again, that's what it's going to take to restore

:13:44. > :13:51.credibility. Transparency is going to be very, very important over the

:13:52. > :13:54.next few years. No amount of great performedances here in Rio and no

:13:55. > :13:58.one great decision will restore credibility. It is going to take

:13:59. > :14:01.some time and, until that time, until such time as credibility is

:14:02. > :14:05.completely restored, you're going to see situations where you're going to

:14:06. > :14:08.have fantastic performances and the first thing that's going to happen

:14:09. > :14:11.is going to be speculation as to whether or not it's real. That's

:14:12. > :14:14.unfortunate but that is the situation the sport is in as a

:14:15. > :14:19.result of all of the misdeeds over the last few years. Yes, absolutely,

:14:20. > :14:22.Michael. Let's concentrate on what's going on on the track. I'm urging

:14:23. > :14:30.people to stay up this evening because we've got a fantastic battle

:14:31. > :14:36.in the heptathlon. Who has the edge? Jess is such a tough competitor that

:14:37. > :14:39.you can never count her out and I'm sure that Katerina has learned from

:14:40. > :14:43.last year. She's off to a fantastic start already. As you see Jess

:14:44. > :14:47.there, she's such a tough competitor. When you get to the

:14:48. > :14:52.Olympic Games, the big stage, many times it's not so much what type of

:14:53. > :14:56.physical shape you're in - all of these and it's letes are in the best

:14:57. > :14:59.condition they could be in - but it is the athlete who is mentally tough

:15:00. > :15:02.enough to come out here and take their lumps and also understand the

:15:03. > :15:06.pressure that they're under and be able to balance that and deliver

:15:07. > :15:09.their best performance on the day and be consistent about that. Jess

:15:10. > :15:12.has proven that she can do that time and time again and, um, and so I

:15:13. > :15:19.think that you can just never count Jess out. Katerina certainly wants

:15:20. > :15:22.to bounce back from last year's performances and she's gotten off to

:15:23. > :15:26.a great start as well. I think this will be a very tough competition

:15:27. > :15:29.down to the end and it's going to be an exciting watch. These are live

:15:30. > :15:34.pictures right now. That was Jess talking to her coach. Can I ask you

:15:35. > :15:38.one final question, Michael, and that is Olympic experience, the fact

:15:39. > :15:42.that Jess has been there, seen it, done it, and like other sports, that

:15:43. > :15:46.experience counts for so much? It does count for a lot but I wouldn't

:15:47. > :15:50.say that Katerina because she doesn't have that sort of experience

:15:51. > :15:55.yet is an underdog. I think, that you know, the experience that

:15:56. > :15:59.Katarina had last year is a very rich experience and a learning

:16:00. > :16:03.opportunity and so we will see throughout this competition if she

:16:04. > :16:07.has learned from that and if she has been able to benefit from such a

:16:08. > :16:10.huge disappointment last year and by all accounts, so far, it appears

:16:11. > :16:14.that she has. Michael, great to talk to you. Thank you very much indeed.

:16:15. > :16:17.I could talk to you all night about track and field but I have some

:16:18. > :16:20.football to report on. Top man. That is Michael Johnson.

:16:21. > :16:23.Right, let's go and bring you right up to date with what's happening in

:16:24. > :16:28.the football because it's a massive tournament for Brazil's men and

:16:29. > :16:33.women. The women are taking on Australia later. You may remember in

:16:34. > :16:37.the Fifa World Cup it was in the same location where Germany battered

:16:38. > :16:39.Brazil 7-1 so they don't have good memories of playing there. The

:16:40. > :16:42.Olympic champions, the United States, were looking to book their

:16:43. > :16:49.semifinal place earlier today against Sweden.

:16:50. > :16:53.The first of the quarterfinals of the women's Olympic football

:16:54. > :16:57.tournament in 2016. All is set in Brasilia as the United States and

:16:58. > :17:06.Sweden meet for a place in the semifinals.

:17:07. > :17:08.Sweden might be in here. Is this the moment? Yes, it is!

:17:09. > :17:13.CHEERING Sweden go in front! The substitute

:17:14. > :17:19.has done it. It may be against the run of play but it could be an

:17:20. > :17:22.historic moment. It's an absolute classic counterattack, great

:17:23. > :17:26.first-time ball and she wanted it a little bit more and she won the race

:17:27. > :17:50.against the centrebacks. Can they hold on to it? Tucked in by Morgan!

:17:51. > :17:58.It's 1-1! The ace finisher comes up with another big goal!

:17:59. > :18:01.There'll be a certain amount of acrimony that Sweden were down to

:18:02. > :18:10.ten men but the United States went on and what a superb finish this is

:18:11. > :18:18.Done still looks the player most likely to cause trouble. It's gone

:18:19. > :18:22.in? Will it count? No. Karlie Lloyd knew, I think. She looked over her

:18:23. > :18:26.shoulder. She kept running and celebrating but she almost knew she

:18:27. > :18:29.would be called back. Is it offside or a pull-back on the shoulder of

:18:30. > :18:42.the defender here? Sweden get away with it and come the

:18:43. > :18:46.other way themselves. And they might be in? It's steered in! And that

:18:47. > :18:50.won't count either! What an extraordinary couple of minutes of

:18:51. > :18:52.play. The ball in the net at both ends within one minute and both

:18:53. > :18:58.goals ruled out. Back came Sweden. The spirit

:18:59. > :19:02.fantastic. She was on side there. Well, there's going to be some

:19:03. > :19:07.arguing over that one, I think. And after it all, it will be penalties.

:19:08. > :19:19.It will be a duel between the goalkeepers. And they relish it.

:19:20. > :19:26.Morgan on the left foot. Stopped. It wasn't Morgan's best

:19:27. > :19:30.ever penalty. It's an easy save and it's so important.

:19:31. > :19:35.Ands, lo comes up with a magazines enough sent save this time. United

:19:36. > :19:45.States have pegged Sweden back in the shoot-out. Solo

:19:46. > :19:56.She's put it over the top! Sweden have a kick to win it.

:19:57. > :19:58.The second miss by the USA. Are Sweden about to gate-crash the

:19:59. > :20:10.big time in women's football? She kisses the ball.

:20:11. > :20:18.She intones a prayer and she gets ready here against Solo.

:20:19. > :20:22.She wins it for Sweden! And the United States, the reigning Olympic

:20:23. > :20:29.champions and world champions, go out in the quarterfinals.

:20:30. > :20:35.They miss twice in the shoot-out, Press and Morgan, and Dalqvist had

:20:36. > :20:37.the chance, which she took, to write hear name into Swedish football

:20:38. > :20:47.history. That is a huge shock in the women's

:20:48. > :20:52.football tournament, USA out, between through and Hope Solo, the

:20:53. > :20:56.goalkeeper, has come in for criticism on social media. She

:20:57. > :20:59.decided to take off her gloves just before the final penalty and change

:21:00. > :21:03.them. She's had a lot of criticism over the past couple of hours or so.

:21:04. > :21:05.Let's bring you up to date with what's been happening in the

:21:06. > :21:10.tournament because Germany were looking to join Sweden in the last

:21:11. > :21:15.four. They took on China. Pretty tight game this one, but it's

:21:16. > :21:20.Germany who are through, the winner coming in the 76th minute, Melanie

:21:21. > :21:26.Behringer, with a fantastic goal, which sealings their place in the

:21:27. > :21:30.last four. What a strike! As we know, you can never write off

:21:31. > :21:33.the Germans in any international football tournament. So that's your

:21:34. > :21:41.football. You're completely up to date. Now it is time for athletics.

:21:42. > :21:44.I kind of just fell into the heptathlon, to be honest. I didn't

:21:45. > :21:49.really know what it was. I didn't know what I was doing. I just gave

:21:50. > :21:52.it a go. Nothing beats just going out and challenging yourself every

:21:53. > :21:56.day and just working towards something. I love how pure athletics

:21:57. > :22:00.is, especially with sprinting. Just run as fast as you can to the finish

:22:01. > :22:04.line and whoever is the fastest is the winner. I obviously do think

:22:05. > :22:08.with that moment of crossing the line in London. Hearing the National

:22:09. > :22:12.Anthem, being on the podium, knowing you're the champion. Once you get

:22:13. > :22:18.that feeling, it's just like... I won that. I want to be a successful

:22:19. > :22:22.athlete and I work incredibly hard to be a successful athlete and I

:22:23. > :22:28.live for the moments when the success is there. I would just love

:22:29. > :22:29.to get back on the podium, defend my title and come another with another

:22:30. > :22:42.medal. It's what we live for. Welcome to this, the first evening

:22:43. > :22:44.session of the 2016 Rio Olympic athletics programme and if it's

:22:45. > :22:50.anything as exciting as the morning programme was, then you are in for a

:22:51. > :22:53.real treat. Make sure you have snocks and hot drinks at the ready

:22:54. > :22:59.and whatever tickles your fancy - it is a Friday night - because I have

:23:00. > :23:03.electric athletics for you this evening alongside Paula Radcliffe,

:23:04. > :23:08.Denise Lewis and Michael Johnson is with us as well. Great to have you

:23:09. > :23:12.hear, Michael. Earlier on, the samba band was out, I know you were

:23:13. > :23:15.enjoying that. Now it feels like a Rio athletics meet. Yeah, it does.

:23:16. > :23:19.Hopefully we'll get a few more people in the stands but the energy

:23:20. > :23:21.is already pretty good in here so, um, hopefully we'll see some great

:23:22. > :23:25.athletics tonight. That was a fantastic start this morning to the

:23:26. > :23:30.first day of athletics, so, um, really looking forward to the 400m

:23:31. > :23:39.tonight, 100m women as well. Getting off to a great start. This morning

:23:40. > :23:43.we were discussing in David Rudisha's 800m meet how infrequent

:23:44. > :23:46.world records were. And bang, about 30 minutes later, there was another

:23:47. > :23:55.world record, but we really did not see it coming. Or in quite that

:23:56. > :23:58.style. We saw it coming half way through the race but before the

:23:59. > :24:01.race, no. We were talking about the finals and would the girls get up

:24:02. > :24:05.for T the conditions were perfect but the key thing was we don't often

:24:06. > :24:13.see everything come together like that, people in shape for a

:24:14. > :24:17.championship, straight final ten kilometres but Alice took out the

:24:18. > :24:21.pace in the first half. And she set it up for Ayana who blew the field

:24:22. > :24:29.apart. It was on world record pace with

:24:30. > :24:33.Alice Aprot Nawowuna but then she upped the piece. An impressive piece

:24:34. > :24:42.of distance running for a woman new to ten kilometres. Hugely impressive

:24:43. > :24:49.from Ayana. We had Vivian Cheruiyot one second outside of the old

:24:50. > :24:55.record. She comes out of it with a bronze medal, Dibaba and she had to

:24:56. > :25:00.fight. We had 18 PBs in the race out of 37 starters and some of the girls

:25:01. > :25:05.probably had no idea where they were positionwise in that race. Trying to

:25:06. > :25:08.keep track of were they running the right number of laps was

:25:09. > :25:12.complicated. While that was going on, it was the high jump in the

:25:13. > :25:15.heptathlon - because the race was so scattered, the girls were finding it

:25:16. > :25:20.difficult to weave in for the high jump but in the end it didn't matter

:25:21. > :25:26.because we had a spectacular high jump competition the likes of which,

:25:27. > :25:31.world-class high jumping outside of the heptathlon in the end and with

:25:32. > :25:35.Jess off to her usual good start in the hurdles, it's tantalising, the

:25:36. > :25:39.top three. It has. The pendulum is swinging in favour of Kat, it's

:25:40. > :25:42.swinging in favour of Jess, but, you know, the competition isn't over.

:25:43. > :25:47.Tonight is going to be interesting. As you know, we've got the shot put

:25:48. > :25:53.coming up, the 200m, both favour I would say a little bit of Jess for

:25:54. > :25:58.the shot, maybe we could see a duel in the 200 -- dual in the 200 but --

:25:59. > :26:01.duel in the 200m. A thrilling competition. The women's high

:26:02. > :26:05.jumpers would probably be completioned with that in

:26:06. > :26:09.qualifications. It was just -- pleased with that in qualifications.

:26:10. > :26:13.It was just tremendous. The things about these ladies is they're often

:26:14. > :26:17.smashing their PBs because they are so infrequently doing seven events

:26:18. > :26:22.together. Let's look, then, at the PBs of the two British contenders,

:26:23. > :26:28.KJT and Jessica Ennis because if they perform to their PBs, of

:26:29. > :26:33.course, the points they can acquire would be huge but at the moment,

:26:34. > :26:37.obviously, a PB for Johnson-Thompson, no so much for

:26:38. > :26:41.Ennis yet. That's how it's looking and you did so your predictions this

:26:42. > :26:47.morning, Denise, on the strength of their various events and it came to

:26:48. > :26:52.an 800m for you. I think it could, potentially, but a lot hinges on the

:26:53. > :26:56.two throws for Katarina. She needs to throw close to her personal best,

:26:57. > :27:06.you know. But we've seen her throw 11m in big competitions. That won't

:27:07. > :27:10.be good enough. She needs to be close to 13m or 14m for the shot

:27:11. > :27:13.put. There's nothing in it for the 200m at all but the cushion that

:27:14. > :27:19.Jess will have overnight is significant. We come back with the

:27:20. > :27:24.long jump tomorrow. That pendulum swings back to Kat and Jess has to

:27:25. > :27:31.be close to a PB. It's thrilling. It really is. And Thiam is a good shot

:27:32. > :27:35.putter. Don't be surprised if she's in the lead after the shot put but

:27:36. > :27:39.she's well off the pace for the 200m. Normal service should resume

:27:40. > :27:43.overnight with a Brit on top of the leaderboard. Let's get down to the

:27:44. > :27:47.track for the women's 1,500m heats that are about to get under way.

:27:48. > :27:51.Steve Cram is calling the first one of these. It's always intriguing the

:27:52. > :27:55.way the tactics go on the 1,500m. It's so difficult to get through the

:27:56. > :27:59.heats, isn't it, and how to navigate them and make sure you're not there

:28:00. > :28:04.running for a fastest time, a fastest loser's time. You have a

:28:05. > :28:10.vested interest in this. Well, yes, Gabi.

:28:11. > :28:13.Laura Weightman is going in heat two and Laura Muir, our two

:28:14. > :28:17.representatives, in heat three and the heats can be tricky at times

:28:18. > :28:21.even though on paper, you think OK, top six, but with 42 entrants and

:28:22. > :28:25.probably at least 30 of them thinking they're going to get to the

:28:26. > :28:31.final and we've got some big names in each of the heats. You've seen

:28:32. > :28:35.Dibaba. That's prendia Martinez who wanted to be in the 800m. Brenda

:28:36. > :28:39.Martinez who wanted to be in the 800m. She crossed the line in third

:28:40. > :28:45.in the trials and made this through in this event. Mageena recently won

:28:46. > :28:51.a medal at the European Championships for Ireland. And

:28:52. > :28:55.Genzebe Dibaba what an interesting it's year for her and what do we

:28:56. > :28:58.have in store from her? Not sure. The world record-holder last year

:28:59. > :29:04.who carried everything before her and this year she's had a troubled

:29:05. > :29:08.preparation. Here's a good young talent from

:29:09. > :29:12.Germany. She's the European junior cross country champion, third over

:29:13. > :29:17.3,000m at the world junior championships recently.

:29:18. > :29:21.Maureen Koster from the Netherlands, ran sub-four minutes, exclusive club

:29:22. > :29:25.to join. She did that last year. Hasn't been quite as quick this

:29:26. > :29:30.year. The Australian has made a big

:29:31. > :29:36.improve in 2016 but this is somebody who could be a big threat to Laura

:29:37. > :29:41.Muir's chances of a medal, from Poland, who has been in a great

:29:42. > :29:45.form. The Kenyans will always be difficult.

:29:46. > :29:50.The Serbian is a familiar figure on thele inside. There are 14 athletes

:29:51. > :29:53.in each of threat heats and the top six will go through. I would say

:29:54. > :30:00.probably heat two is the toughest to come. This one, not so easy.

:30:01. > :30:04.Laura Muir probably delighted to be in heat three. There are six fastest

:30:05. > :30:08.losers to advance as well so the athletes in heat three have a bit of

:30:09. > :30:12.an advantage in that sense. Away we go, then. 3.75 laps as

:30:13. > :30:17.normal. A few more people in the stadium tonight. A little bit of an

:30:18. > :30:20.atmosphere being created. It's a pity there aren't more. Paula

:30:21. > :30:26.Radcliffe has raced down from the studio to be alongside me.

:30:27. > :30:38.Let's talk about Di about, aba, Paula.

:30:39. > :30:45.She has not had the sort of preparation she would like. Picking

:30:46. > :30:51.up the toe injury which has prevented her making her debut.

:30:52. > :30:57.Coming back and actually just advancing. Definitely has to have

:30:58. > :31:08.been affected by all the turmoil that has gone down her. We will get

:31:09. > :31:12.an idea of how she is racing, we know her family is racing well and

:31:13. > :31:15.attract goes well for distance racing, we saw that in the 10,000

:31:16. > :31:24.metres this morning. This has gone out very pedestrian, 72 there for

:31:25. > :31:42.the first lap. Somebody you need to go to the front. Will it be someone

:31:43. > :31:49.like Klosterhalfen from Germany. The young German is very strong, had a

:31:50. > :32:12.big personal best in the 1500 this year. The Irish runner has a good

:32:13. > :32:20.kick, Dibaba comes through now. The Dutch runner comes up now. The

:32:21. > :32:28.Moroccan runner coming through as well. The danger of falling down and

:32:29. > :32:31.not being able to progress from this first-round heat becomes greater and

:32:32. > :32:36.greater, you have the likes of Brenda Martinez, we saw what

:32:37. > :32:45.happened in the 800 metres in the US trials. She really wants to stay out

:32:46. > :32:57.of trouble, Maureen Coster has decided she will start to move up.

:32:58. > :33:06.Klosterhalfen from Germany, the Australian just coming up on the

:33:07. > :33:23.inside. We will have a good last lap, the top six to go through.

:33:24. > :33:28.Klosterhalfen leading, still plenty with a chance to get in the top

:33:29. > :33:35.sticks -- top six. Dibaba changes gear, this will be to see what she

:33:36. > :33:41.can do. A big gap appears, very quickly, the Irish runner decides to

:33:42. > :33:49.just sit here and now goes back, 200 metres to go, Dibaba leading, Martin

:33:50. > :33:56.is coming through, they are all struggling, these top six places, --

:33:57. > :33:59.the Canadian and the Polish runner who I thought would really content

:34:00. > :34:10.here has a lot of people to get past in the home straight. Klosterhalfen

:34:11. > :34:30.trying to hang on. Martin as as well, -- Martinez. Four in a row,.

:34:31. > :34:37.Go on then, Genzebe Dibaba, the she did not go hard all the way into the

:34:38. > :34:41.last 300, what do you reckon? She does not look to me in the shape she

:34:42. > :34:45.was last year, she does not have that change of pace, which is

:34:46. > :34:49.setting her miles apart from the rest of the field. She reacted, the

:34:50. > :34:57.others were slower to react certainly, and she built up that

:34:58. > :35:02.gap. The Irish runner held it, and Klosterhalfen, she took it on and

:35:03. > :35:13.put the work in. It will be a bit of a nervous wait now for Hillary

:35:14. > :35:18.Stelling worth, should be with six but... Personally a class apart

:35:19. > :35:22.their, when you look at it from that pack. Is she doing what she needs to

:35:23. > :35:28.do, she has not raced that much humming in, she wants to probably

:35:29. > :35:40.get a little bit of a test out there. Ciara Mageean did not finish

:35:41. > :35:46.as quickly as she wanted to their, looking up at the screen there,

:35:47. > :35:50.looks pretty comfortable. I have seen her go quicker, on the last

:35:51. > :35:56.lap, but she is probably thinking ahead now, Ciara Mageean looking

:35:57. > :36:08.very good indeed, and a blanket finish for those four after that.

:36:09. > :36:11.The top six go through. Katarina Johnson-Thompson will go night in

:36:12. > :36:19.the shotput. The women get three goes each on the shop thought. --

:36:20. > :36:24.shotput. Of course these women are supreme athletes, but they threw a

:36:25. > :36:32.lot shorter distances with the elite shotput is. Valerie Adams is going

:36:33. > :36:42.for her third consecutive Olympic gold, and for that she will have two

:36:43. > :36:47.throw over 20 metres. How do you throw that big? Wake cannot throw

:36:48. > :36:52.that big? Explained to us. We are not specialists, there is only so

:36:53. > :37:00.much time in the week that you can train. With all her height, with all

:37:01. > :37:03.the power she exudes, we know she can high jump well and long jump

:37:04. > :37:08.well, but she does not knew her -- use her legs efficiently in the

:37:09. > :37:17.circle, and that results in just her not using that power. This is

:37:18. > :37:20.Valerie Adams from New Zealand. You see how she hits that shotput. It

:37:21. > :37:27.just catapulted out of hand. But at all comes from this action here.

:37:28. > :37:32.Driving back that leg, she stays back on that shot and tries to hold

:37:33. > :37:38.onto that shot as as possible, putting that weight behind the shot.

:37:39. > :37:42.Kateryna does not do that. She is almost upright, out of the back, so

:37:43. > :37:49.there for she is not able to use her legs. Is that physically possible?

:37:50. > :37:55.Obviously they are massively physically different people. Valerie

:37:56. > :38:01.Adams cannot hide jump as well as Katarina Johnson-Thompson and do

:38:02. > :38:04.other things. If you saw Valerie Adams over 20 metres you are the

:38:05. > :38:13.surprise, she would be pretty quick. It is a powerplay. And she can do

:38:14. > :38:16.it, but she learns those basic things, using those legs, keeping

:38:17. > :38:25.that shot behind her, she can easily find another 1.5 metres. Jessica is

:38:26. > :38:28.better, of course, she is up there as one of the stronger shotput is in

:38:29. > :38:33.the field, but still not anywhere near her best. Let's have a look at

:38:34. > :38:42.her and the difference in technique. Jessica is five foot five, what she

:38:43. > :38:48.does with her body, the mechanics, gives you great results, and we have

:38:49. > :38:55.said that, 14.79 is really good for her physique and power. She uses her

:38:56. > :39:00.legs. She uses her hips. It allows her to arrive in the correct

:39:01. > :39:07.position, hear the foot is underneath her hips, she uses her

:39:08. > :39:11.hips ), a little bit open, possibly, but she uses her legs effectively.

:39:12. > :39:19.She stays behind that shot and it gives her a better result. You

:39:20. > :39:20.worked really hard at the shotput, didn't you? It became one of your

:39:21. > :39:33.better events. I did. They are about to get off shortly,

:39:34. > :39:40.we will keep you up to speed with how they are doing. But don't expect

:39:41. > :39:46.this to be one of Katarina Johnson-Thompson's high-scoring

:39:47. > :39:54.events. Thank you, setting the shotput up nicely, third event of

:39:55. > :40:00.the heptathlon, Jessica Ennis-Hill waiting her chance to release the

:40:01. > :40:06.four kilograms shot. Her coach has cheered a lot of gum today. Some

:40:07. > :40:10.tense moments through the high jump. They have worked hard, trained in

:40:11. > :40:16.Barcelona, chose not to join the team here in Brazil until late on,

:40:17. > :40:22.spent time with her son, performed well so far, but boy has she got her

:40:23. > :40:32.hands full with her teammate Katarina Johnson-Thompson, she is a

:40:33. > :40:39.better shotput. -- shot putter. Something over 14 metres would be

:40:40. > :40:46.ideal. We will just separate on that, it is shy of 14, a tentative

:40:47. > :40:52.start. Somewhere around 13.50 maybe. But it is a mark, she gets three

:40:53. > :40:55.attempt. She goes one way, the shot goes the other, and there is a lot

:40:56. > :41:01.of force being wasted there, for mine. She can correct that now, she

:41:02. > :41:04.has got her mark in, slightly more tense hill -- slightly more tense

:41:05. > :41:18.look on the face of Jessica Ennis-Hill. She will want more. On

:41:19. > :41:25.to the second of three heats, in the first round of the 5000 metres. Not

:41:26. > :41:32.the easiest of the three heats, six go through automatically. Some big

:41:33. > :41:52.names in there as well, there is the lineup, Jenny Simpson is in their,

:41:53. > :41:57.there are those big names. Besu Sado as well. Six athletes go through

:41:58. > :42:10.automatically. There is the American, Jenny Simpson. World

:42:11. > :42:21.champion five years ago. Kipyegon, quickest in the world this year.

:42:22. > :42:29.Hassan, last year she looked outstanding, not quite as quick this

:42:30. > :42:41.year, but still very quick. A great change of years, there is Laura

:42:42. > :42:53.Weightman. Had that great spell in 2014, running strongly again. If she

:42:54. > :43:03.runs at her best she should move through comfortable in. There is an

:43:04. > :43:06.deal in a Lohalith, from the refugee team, fled the conflict in South

:43:07. > :43:18.Sudan and now training in can you. -- Kenya. The second heat of the

:43:19. > :43:22.women's 1500 metres. It was a slow start. The six fastest losers to go

:43:23. > :43:25.through as well over the three heats. If you make it briskly enough

:43:26. > :43:38.you have a far better chance, and Laura Weightman just checking

:43:39. > :43:41.behind. Jenny Simpson sitting in there, Sado a dangerous runner to

:43:42. > :43:49.get close to. There is talent in this race. A very strong first

:43:50. > :43:56.round. Sado of Ethiopia coming past Laura Weightman. She is very

:43:57. > :44:01.experienced these days. Eight the newly big games four years ago,

:44:02. > :44:06.European medallist, and unfortunate accident last year in the World

:44:07. > :44:09.Championship where she fell over the finish line and hit on the track,

:44:10. > :44:14.and was unable to continue. But here she is, in an opportunity for her to

:44:15. > :44:18.move through to the semi-final, and now the race is beginning to move a

:44:19. > :44:22.little, Laura Weightman stretching down the back straight, looking

:44:23. > :44:28.comfortable there, but she has got to be aware in this race, and Hassan

:44:29. > :44:33.in the orange vest of the Netherlands, right in the back, but

:44:34. > :44:39.watch her. Sado is going to be a bit of a danger, but Kipyegon is moving

:44:40. > :44:41.into third place, the Kenyan, the fastest in the world this year. It

:44:42. > :44:57.drifting towards the front. You can see that it looks a little

:44:58. > :45:09.bit more quick - we'll get confirmation - but it looks quicker

:45:10. > :45:14.than the first. Sado is doing well. She's in third or fourth. Watch

:45:15. > :45:19.Hassan at the back, staying out of all the danger - well, I say that

:45:20. > :45:22.but she had to stick out a paw to steady herself. She makes her move

:45:23. > :45:25.on the back straight. Then she'll begin to ease past everyone.

:45:26. > :45:28.Bunching up a little bit again and there are plenty of athletes in here

:45:29. > :45:33.who have run similar times this season. So it could be a fierce race

:45:34. > :45:36.come the latter stages. But six to go through automatically and

:45:37. > :45:39.Weightman is just moving into a good position. Laura Weightman just

:45:40. > :45:44.sitting on the outside, doing nicely, ready to move when she's got

:45:45. > :45:48.to be. And she's got hold this position, don't let anyone past on

:45:49. > :45:54.the outside if you can help it. Sado ahead of her. Kipyegon is in the

:45:55. > :45:58.leading and looking strong and comfortable but when you get those

:45:59. > :46:02.kinds of accidents, a little bump can cause a concertina effect and

:46:03. > :46:07.Laura is free of trouble, in a good place now, coming down the straight.

:46:08. > :46:15.All she has to do is run the last 400m as we know she can. Kipyegon is

:46:16. > :46:22.strong and good. And Jenny Simpson is the more experienced American

:46:23. > :46:26.ones outside. There's the bell. Weightman moving past the Coneo, the

:46:27. > :46:30.Colombian, who did much of the early running. Coneo is hanging on and

:46:31. > :46:35.Laura Weightman is trying to make her move. Hassan hasn't made a move

:46:36. > :46:40.at all yet. Moving right from the back as of now, coming down the back

:46:41. > :46:44.straight and starting to close and cut off people and Laura Weightman

:46:45. > :46:48.has a battle. There goes Hassan in the orange. Past Laura Weightman.

:46:49. > :46:53.Laura has too many in front of her. She's got to dig deep. She really

:46:54. > :46:57.does. Hassan coming through like a train. Six to go through. There are

:46:58. > :47:02.six or seven in front of her and Weightman begins to kick in. She

:47:03. > :47:15.might get Coneo and Jenny Simpson is having to work hard. Weightman is

:47:16. > :47:19.having to dig for a time. It's Kipyegon and there's Jenny Simpson.

:47:20. > :47:24.First four across the line and Laura Weightman in seventh place. A

:47:25. > :47:32.quicker heat than the first one. But it is all about now clock-watching

:47:33. > :47:37.for Laura Weightman. Certainly is. She struggled in the back straight

:47:38. > :47:41.for a moment. As Hassan came past her, I thought it was the chance to

:47:42. > :47:45.follow Hassan but that was a fast last lap. It was a strong and

:47:46. > :47:50.powerful run. Laura swapping notes with Jenny Simpson. Jenny Simpson

:47:51. > :47:54.qualified comfortably. Laura is the fastest loser on my calculation so

:47:55. > :47:59.far but we have to wait to see what happens in the last heat. First of

:48:00. > :48:04.the six fastest losers. And there they G Kipyegon looking strong. Sado

:48:05. > :48:08.on the outside. And here comes Hassan who hasn't been anywhere near

:48:09. > :48:12.it so far, there suddenly accelerating. This was when Laura

:48:13. > :48:16.should have tried to go with her but there wasn't any response. Into the

:48:17. > :48:21.home straight with six athletes ahead of Laura Weightman. There's

:48:22. > :48:24.Kipyegon looking good, Hassan getting better, Sado fading a

:48:25. > :48:29.little, Jenny Simpson in the blue vest from the United States on the

:48:30. > :48:36.outside and the Ethiopian athlete, Sado, drifting there. There's five

:48:37. > :48:42.athletes in the leading group. One of the surprising athletes was

:48:43. > :48:49.Akkaoui of Morocco coming through for the qualifying places. Weightman

:48:50. > :48:53.couldn't quite get through there. And there in seventh place, Laura

:48:54. > :48:59.Weightman closing down on Sado but we know at the moment she's the

:49:00. > :49:03.fastest of the losers. She'll have a nervous sweat but I think she'll be

:49:04. > :49:07.confident that there won't be six athletes who run faster than her in

:49:08. > :49:11.the last round. She's got to wait. A little bit off it, a little bit of

:49:12. > :49:16.strain in the back straight. I just thought she could have pulled it

:49:17. > :49:20.onto Hassan but she's now downstairs and will explain it to us.

:49:21. > :49:23.Thanks, Brendan. Laura, you said as you were coming off you felt you

:49:24. > :49:27.should have qualified from that race. It's a waiting game now,

:49:28. > :49:32.though. Fingers crossed, I should get through in that time. It's silly

:49:33. > :49:36.not to get automatic qualifying but it's messy, a messy, scrappy race. I

:49:37. > :49:40.put myself in a few bad positions so it's partly my own fault, getting in

:49:41. > :49:43.and out and pushed around but that's championship racing. Hopefully that

:49:44. > :49:48.puts me through. We saw you reach the final in 2012 and obviously

:49:49. > :49:51.since then you've won medals at Europeans, Commonwealths, what's the

:49:52. > :49:55.biggest difference between the Laura Weightman now and then? I'm four

:49:56. > :49:56.years stronger and four years more experienced and that's a massive

:49:57. > :50:01.difference coming through the rounds. You stay calm and not worry

:50:02. > :50:04.and hopefully I'll get in the semifinal and I'll be fine. What

:50:05. > :50:07.will you do now? Do you go and look at the next race? Do you keep your

:50:08. > :50:11.head down until you know the result? I'm looking at the semifinal and

:50:12. > :50:14.that should be enough to get me through. I won't stress and worry

:50:15. > :50:19.too much. A few silly mistakes in that race but I know I'm in good

:50:20. > :50:22.shape to run well. I probably made a 4:07 look a bit too hard there but

:50:23. > :50:26.everything is all right and hopefully I'll be in the semifinal.

:50:27. > :50:31.We hope to see you in the semis, all the best. Thank

:50:32. > :50:35.you: Well, sounds confident there, Laura Weightman. I think she's

:50:36. > :50:38.probably right. She's in prime position in the fastest losers at

:50:39. > :50:43.the moment. Six to go through automatically. Hassan did what she

:50:44. > :50:47.does, coming through to take it ahead of Kipyegon. And those who are

:50:48. > :50:49.are further down the running order but I think Laura Weightman should

:50:50. > :50:56.be OK. Back to the track we go for the

:50:57. > :51:02.third and final heat in Round 1 of the women's 1,500m. Well, confidence

:51:03. > :51:06.is based on the result of the first heat, in which they went off much

:51:07. > :51:11.slower. And therefore it was the fast last

:51:12. > :51:15.lap in that one which brought it down a bit but not as quick as the

:51:16. > :51:24.second heat. Certainly at the moment all of the fastest losers come from

:51:25. > :51:28.the second heat. We've seen Jess Ennis-Hill throw

:51:29. > :51:33.13.44. There's two pools and Katarina Johnson-Thompson is in the

:51:34. > :51:35.other pool. This is damage limitation time for

:51:36. > :51:40.Johnson-Thompson. She is needs to throw ideally somewhere beyond or at

:51:41. > :51:49.least close to 13m. That's what she's done this year. First round,

:51:50. > :51:54.though. Left foot never came down. Did she

:51:55. > :51:58.save it? No, that's way down. We saw her warm up quite nicely. That's a

:51:59. > :52:01.foul. She fell out of the front of that by the looks of it. It's a foul

:52:02. > :52:08.in the first round for Katarina Johnson-Thompson. Two throws

:52:09. > :52:13.remaining. Heat three, then. Laura Muir will

:52:14. > :52:16.have looked at the start list here and thought with the form she's in,

:52:17. > :52:30.it should be no problem whatsoever. We've got one non-starter in this

:52:31. > :52:40.from the United Arab Emirates. That's Betlhem Desalegn. We've got

:52:41. > :52:44.one from East Timor and -- in Nelia Martins so maybe Laura Weightman is

:52:45. > :52:50.more confident than me about fastest-loser spots. I think they're

:52:51. > :52:53.all fast here. Zoe Buckman, a fast Australian and

:52:54. > :52:58.Laura Muir is confident enough to sit on the back. Why not? She's in

:52:59. > :53:03.dominant farm. The coach has done a great job with Laura. Both laufrias

:53:04. > :53:08.have been part of the endurance squad who prepared with Moe Farah

:53:09. > :53:12.and everybody else. This is the biggest endurance squad we've had in

:53:13. > :53:15.the Olympic Games for a long time. That's good to see. Laura look to

:53:16. > :53:22.get through without problems. She'll be looking to keep out of trouble in

:53:23. > :53:26.the first couple of laps. We saw a marvellous performance by Laura Muir

:53:27. > :53:29.in the Anniversary Games when she beat Hassan, the world indoor

:53:30. > :53:35.champion in year. And Laura Muir comes into this event with new and

:53:36. > :53:40.renewed confidence and, not surprisingly, when she broke Kelly

:53:41. > :53:44.Holmes's record, she was staggered herself: And I spoke to Kelly last

:53:45. > :53:47.night who said she's looking forward to seeing Laura Muir, not lickty

:53:48. > :53:51.tonight because it's no more than a formality but it isn't. You've got

:53:52. > :53:54.to do it, get there, get in the first six to go through but she's

:53:55. > :53:58.running so confidently. When you're good and when you're strong and when

:53:59. > :54:03.you've just run personal bests, when you've just beaten the record by the

:54:04. > :54:07.great Kelly Holmes, then you can afford to run with confidence here

:54:08. > :54:10.and that means, you know, I'm the boss, I'm controlling this, you can

:54:11. > :54:14.do what you want to do but eventually I'll be joining you. Now

:54:15. > :54:21.they come down, two laps to go, Laura Muir is now going to start

:54:22. > :54:27.taking closer order. So Laura Muir content to be at the

:54:28. > :54:33.back. There are 11 people here in this group and the pace they're

:54:34. > :54:39.going, Bre, all 11 could qualify, which would -- Bren, all 11 sko

:54:40. > :54:44.qualify which would make Laura Weightman... Sorry... The pace

:54:45. > :54:48.they're goings. Oh, Bahta took a stumble there. All

:54:49. > :54:52.of these women could, if they worked together, all go through. So Laura

:54:53. > :55:01.Muir is not bothered about that. She's straight at the front.

:55:02. > :55:08.Seyaum, for me, is another threat. She's a very good Ethiopian runner.

:55:09. > :55:12.Well, the way Laura Muir strode down the back straight, the power she

:55:13. > :55:16.showed when she was doing that, the confidence she exudes today, it's a

:55:17. > :55:19.new Laura Muir. She was fifth in the World Championships last year and

:55:20. > :55:22.we're ready to see even better things from Laura Muir. As she comes

:55:23. > :55:25.down, she'll hear the bell and really, at this point now, it's

:55:26. > :55:30.about concentration. We know she's strong. We know she's fast enough.

:55:31. > :55:36.We know she's got the power to drive at any point here, but we know that

:55:37. > :55:44.any athlete, including Laura Muir, hat got to concentrate now, as she

:55:45. > :55:47.comes up with 300m to go, three laps, 320m, so they can keep going

:55:48. > :55:52.at this pace. It's a little threat to Laura Weightman but Laura Muir

:55:53. > :55:57.looks impressive. Laura Muir has to do something about that Ethiopian

:55:58. > :56:02.striding out. Seyaum kicks away. Top six to go through but all 11, even

:56:03. > :56:12.Magnani at the back, can go through here. Zoe Buckman, the Australian,

:56:13. > :56:17.tried to get around Arafi of Morocco. Bahta, a former Ethiopian

:56:18. > :56:23.now running for Sweden, is moving away. Laura Muir lets Seyaum move

:56:24. > :56:27.away. Top six are going through but anything under 4:08 and they'll all

:56:28. > :56:31.go through. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven... Well, one or two

:56:32. > :56:37.at the back will have to wait and see. No problems for Laura Muir and,

:56:38. > :56:41.in fact, we can confirm that both Lauras qualify, Laura Weightman is

:56:42. > :56:43.the fastest loser, Laura Muir qualifying by rights, both of them

:56:44. > :56:48.through to the semifinals. All the big names through. No real surprises

:56:49. > :56:53.there for me. Didn't really learn a lot, Bren, except that everybody,

:56:54. > :56:57.including coaches, get nervous in semifinals with people falling over.

:56:58. > :57:01.Seyaum kicked away but Laura let her do that. She certainly did. That was

:57:02. > :57:05.an impressive performance by Laura Muir. It's a new confidence that you

:57:06. > :57:11.get when you're running as well as she is. Allowing Seyaum to run away.

:57:12. > :57:15.She's just settling and relaxing. She's so, so impressive this year. I

:57:16. > :57:18.think she's going to have great chances in the next few days and

:57:19. > :57:25.Laura Weightman, as the coach has just said, he was more nervous than

:57:26. > :57:33.her R but Seyaum will be a bit of a threat. Arafi, Shannon Rowbury -

:57:34. > :57:39.that's the six. Laura Muir more impressive than any of them in that

:57:40. > :57:43.one. She's downstairs now with Phil. Brendan talking on commentary how

:57:44. > :57:47.good a season it's been, how good you looked out there, how in control

:57:48. > :57:52.you are. Yeah, no, I just wanted to get the job done basically, top six.

:57:53. > :57:56.A lot of girls wanted to be at the front. Make sure I didn't get boxed

:57:57. > :58:00.in and job done and rest up for the semis now. At the Anniversary Games,

:58:01. > :58:04.you were impressive. How high is your confidence? To finish that race

:58:05. > :58:07.you couldn't cope for anything better. I'm taking confidence from

:58:08. > :58:11.that and using it here. It's paying off. You can't get ahead of

:58:12. > :58:14.yourself. People are talking about you contending for a medal here but

:58:15. > :58:18.you've got to negotiate the rounds. What mind-set are you in? You take

:58:19. > :58:23.it one round at a time. Getting to the final is not easy. My focus is

:58:24. > :58:27.now on the semis and once I get to the final, I'll focus on that. It's

:58:28. > :58:31.the Olympics. Anything can happen. We wish you well for the semis.

:58:32. > :58:37.Thank you. Well done. Thank you very much.

:58:38. > :58:43.Two PBs in the first two events in the heptathlon for Thiam. First

:58:44. > :58:54.round of the shot put. It's a big throw! Wow! She's

:58:55. > :58:56.produced two fantastic performances in the hurdles and the high jump.

:58:57. > :59:01.She's matching Katarina Johnson-Thompson. You can see the

:59:02. > :59:05.look in her face. She got into that. We've seen Jess Ennis-Hill just

:59:06. > :59:08.under 14m. She can touch the front part of that board and nothing else.

:59:09. > :59:16.It's a valid throw. It will be measured. Thiam 14.41 fm. That could

:59:17. > :59:23.take her into the lead. Well! Theisen-Eaton, the Canadian

:59:24. > :59:29.has been solid so far, without being fantastic. Her first-round effort is

:59:30. > :59:33.justunder 13m. A lifetime best for her is 13.71m. So that's another

:59:34. > :59:39.decent performance. She is reliable, consistent. I just wonder whether

:59:40. > :59:44.she's got the firepower to challenge the Brits and indeed Thiam who is

:59:45. > :59:56.producing a great heptathlon at the early stages.

:59:57. > :00:09.Jessica Ennis-Hill in round two of the shotput. 13.44 was the opener.

:00:10. > :00:15.She can let loose now. She has thrown over 14 metres in the past.

:00:16. > :00:21.Just came away from that as well, elbow dropped, it is below 14 metres

:00:22. > :00:25.again. She threw 13.73 en route to her gold medal in the World

:00:26. > :00:30.Championship last year, she is just shy of that. You can just see it

:00:31. > :00:35.going out sideways from her neck. Once wrote to improve on that

:00:36. > :00:44.first-round effort. 13.44 her best so far. No improvement in the second

:00:45. > :00:50.round. Katarina Johnson-Thompson, round two after a foul. Has to get a

:00:51. > :00:55.mark in here, no messing about. She really went around that again, it

:00:56. > :01:02.looked as though it is going to be measured, maybe not quite even 12

:01:03. > :01:07.metres. She has produced a brilliant high jump, we saw earlier, a British

:01:08. > :01:12.record, she is in the lead, but she is going to get swallowed up if she

:01:13. > :01:18.does not improve on that market. -- that mark. As she waits for it to be

:01:19. > :01:23.measured, she will not be happy with that, but she will be happy that is

:01:24. > :01:32.a mark. 11.6 eight. Down on what she needs. -- 11.60 eight. We can tie up

:01:33. > :01:39.the 1500 metre qualifiers. The quickest heat was that last one,

:01:40. > :01:44.Seyaum winning it. The fastest losers came from heat to MP3, which

:01:45. > :01:51.means that Laura Weightman goes through as the fastest loser, also

:01:52. > :02:04.-- peaks two and three. 16 in total, those semifinals, as

:02:05. > :02:10.Laura Muir alluded to, will be difficult. But have a little look in

:02:11. > :02:18.close detail at this shotput is. Because you analysed both athletes,

:02:19. > :02:21.Jessica Ennis-Hill and Katarina Johnson-Thompson, and compare them

:02:22. > :02:25.to the very elite, the best of the best in Valerie Adams. What you

:02:26. > :02:29.showed earlier, Katarina Johnson-Thompson has thrown worse

:02:30. > :02:33.and her technique has been poorer. What you think is going on with her,

:02:34. > :02:38.she is down on her personal best and what she can do. I'm not sure what

:02:39. > :02:42.is going on, but I'm sure the break has something to do with it, I'm

:02:43. > :02:48.sure there is something just by misfiring, they are not particular

:02:49. > :02:51.tired, so that is hard, suggest is not brain what we normally would

:02:52. > :03:02.expect to see, she is a 14 metre throw at worst. So technically, she

:03:03. > :03:04.is just miss firing out of her hands, we talked about the

:03:05. > :03:11.separation between her body and the shot, at this point she is just not

:03:12. > :03:16.opening up -- she is just opening up our arm, and it is causing the shot

:03:17. > :03:22.to go out at an angle, shows she is losing distance. Let's have a look

:03:23. > :03:27.at this one again. This is her second attempt. That is is very

:03:28. > :03:34.flat. Really did not use her... No trajectory at all. But also she did

:03:35. > :03:39.not get her right leg underneath her, which you really do need to get

:03:40. > :03:42.the impetus through the shot. She will be really disappointed with

:03:43. > :03:47.that. Katarina Johnson-Thompson with a foul on her first throw, and then

:03:48. > :03:51.her body in her second throw, had technique appeared to be all over

:03:52. > :03:55.the place really, she did not seem to have any strength at all. At the

:03:56. > :04:00.moment you can imagine what is going through her head. I can't mess up,

:04:01. > :04:04.so easily she could have three fouls in the shotput and that would be a

:04:05. > :04:08.disaster. I think she was just very cautious about, she just needed to

:04:09. > :04:15.get one in, technically, it is not great, not great at all. 11.68, not

:04:16. > :04:19.using her legs again, throwing is about the legs, whether it is

:04:20. > :04:27.javelin, Hama, shot up they need to do that. -- shot. They have won

:04:28. > :04:33.three left, and hopefully they can give it all they have got. 400 metre

:04:34. > :04:38.hits coming up next on the track, Michael Johnson, are you excited

:04:39. > :04:40.about that? 400 was arguably the final of the World Championships

:04:41. > :04:47.last year, the most electrifying race. Yes, and it will live up to

:04:48. > :04:51.the same heights. This year has shaped up to be a fantastic year for

:04:52. > :04:56.the 400 metres, I know who is going to win the medals, I believe, but

:04:57. > :05:04.the order could be anyway, so when we get under way here today, the

:05:05. > :05:10.world champion in the last championships. Will we see a top

:05:11. > :05:14.three under 44 in the final? There are a couple of people who have run

:05:15. > :05:19.under 44 in the final. This is one we will see it, at this early round,

:05:20. > :05:22.it will get some of the kinks out, it has been a few weeks since they

:05:23. > :05:29.have race, it will be interesting to see. Let's see how they go. Fitzroy

:05:30. > :05:43.Dunkley, second in the Jamaican championships, just outside, was Gil

:05:44. > :05:52.Roberts, there is Cedenio of Trinidad Tobago, two hundredths

:05:53. > :06:04.inside the British record of Ewan Thomas. Alex Sampao in lane one,

:06:05. > :06:07.from Kenya. There is the European champion, he has a bit of an

:06:08. > :06:25.Achilles injury obviously something to be concerned about, the macro --

:06:26. > :06:36.the Borlee siblings will all be in these Olympics.

:06:37. > :06:44.The first of seven heats in the men's 400 metres.

:06:45. > :06:52.Cleanly away, three to go through automatically, plus the next fastest

:06:53. > :07:00.three to the semifinals. Roberts making great progress, pulling away

:07:01. > :07:04.from Fitzroy Dunkley at the moment. Roberts is a powerful runner, just

:07:05. > :07:08.settling back into things, things even in up a little bit more, it is

:07:09. > :07:20.quite even between five or six athletes. Dunkley going well. Bravo

:07:21. > :07:26.is going well from Venezuela. Cedenio looking strong and looking

:07:27. > :07:33.smooth. The Cuban is in third at the moment. Cedenio takes it, vowing to

:07:34. > :07:37.the line, 44.99, Roberts takes a second, inside 45 seconds, but I

:07:38. > :07:44.think he gave that pretty much everything, Cedenio, he was not

:07:45. > :07:48.easing up, he was tying up a little bit, Cedenio, I am Cedenio, and I

:07:49. > :07:52.have gone below 45 seconds. Roberts went out very quickly, but just

:07:53. > :07:55.eased through the middle of the race and had to work quite hard towards

:07:56. > :08:05.the end, but three to go through automatically, and Gill Roberts and

:08:06. > :08:15.Cedenio go through. He runs a very smart race, Roberts, the Kenyan goes

:08:16. > :08:19.quickly backwards in lane one, but Cedenio could see everybody, and

:08:20. > :08:25.really moves through, it is not always easy in lane two but the

:08:26. > :08:30.others have gone out quickly, you can see him just easing around this

:08:31. > :08:34.top end, and all of a sudden on the home straight years into half metre

:08:35. > :08:38.lead. He has had a great season so far, Cedenio, the big three other

:08:39. > :08:41.favourites to win the medals, and there are one of two really good new

:08:42. > :08:45.talent coming through, this guy is only 20 years of age, just

:08:46. > :08:48.struggling a little towards the end, reaching to the line, not like

:08:49. > :08:58.Roberts, Roberts looking across, and qualifies OK. Cedenio, it will see

:08:59. > :09:04.on the outside, but what do you make of Cedenio? When Cedenio stumbled

:09:05. > :09:09.badly out of the rocks, that this may be why he ran his first 200 so

:09:10. > :09:12.quickly, overcoming that stumble. This was not running by Roberts out

:09:13. > :09:20.in lane seven because he was effectively on the outside lane with

:09:21. > :09:25.the 17-year-old from new from Niger on the outside. Knowing that

:09:26. > :09:28.everybody else was on the inside, you see Dunkley coming up, it was

:09:29. > :09:33.smart to get out and run quickly through the first 200, and then just

:09:34. > :09:38.hold on, he does start to tie up at the end, but he manages it well, he

:09:39. > :09:44.is holding form and quite good form, leaning back a little bit as the

:09:45. > :09:48.fatigue starts to set in. It still able to hold, and that will hold him

:09:49. > :09:52.in good stead, that was a pretty good time under 45 seconds for the

:09:53. > :09:58.opening round, Cedenio, a great young talent, I have worked with him

:09:59. > :10:04.a little bit over the last couple of years, and he is a very studious

:10:05. > :10:10.runner, loves to study other 400 metre runners, and that has helped

:10:11. > :10:14.in to be very consistent this year, 44 seconds, so he has a very good

:10:15. > :10:20.chance here at these championships, and has a very good opening right

:10:21. > :10:26.there with a 45 second, under 45 seconds, going down a little bit of

:10:27. > :10:40.a marker. Machel Cedenio led them home, Roberts and Lescay from Cuba

:10:41. > :10:51.are the three fastest, Fitzroy Dunkley coming in fourth. Theisen

:10:52. > :10:57.Eaton then, 13.36 in the third round, she is the world leader, it

:10:58. > :11:00.is all going on around her. Looking to improve on her first-round throw,

:11:01. > :11:06.here in the second round, in the shot put. Quick with the feet as

:11:07. > :11:12.ever. Around the Simla sort of mark as her first-round throw. She just

:11:13. > :11:20.seems very consistent, but it does not convince me that she can really

:11:21. > :11:28.drop the Hama and punted out -- the hammer. You just wonder what she can

:11:29. > :11:36.do to fight off the British. A wonderful added so far for the

:11:37. > :11:43.Canadian, Brianne Theisen Eaton. Jessica Ennis-Hill has had two

:11:44. > :11:47.throws already in the 13 metres, she needs something beyond 14, she is

:11:48. > :11:54.capable of it, 14 metres plus, please, Jessica Ennis-Hill, it is on

:11:55. > :12:01.the 14 metre line, maybe just shy of it. It is an improvement, though.

:12:02. > :12:05.Her head in her hands, she knows that is not quite what she is

:12:06. > :12:16.capable of. Just unwound a little early there. Jedinak. The face tells

:12:17. > :12:20.a story. -- yeah. Her face tells the story. It is the best of her three

:12:21. > :12:35.attempts. But it is over for Jessica Ennis-Hill. And the attention turns

:12:36. > :12:42.to Thiam. That is better, that is very much better, that is close to

:12:43. > :12:49.15 metres, and Thiam is absolutely putting together a brilliant first

:12:50. > :12:57.day, it is going to be a huge first score, first-day score, her 200

:12:58. > :13:02.metres maybe not the likes of Anna 's Hill and Johnson Thomson, --

:13:03. > :13:11.Jessica Ennis-Hill, but look at her reaction. And what it means to her.

:13:12. > :13:20.14.91, that will take the lead over all after three events, foreshore.

:13:21. > :13:30.-- for sure. Look at the start list of this second heat, the British

:13:31. > :13:41.athlete had to withdraw, he will be in the relay, we are told, here is

:13:42. > :13:47.the starting this for heat two. The first three to go through, we

:13:48. > :14:09.have Cedenio do 44.99, it is the fastest

:14:10. > :14:33.three to go through. The 4-man if you like, Brenes, from Costa Rica,

:14:34. > :14:40.still producing fast times. That is Brenes, who will be with his

:14:41. > :14:53.teammate in the relay. Brenes has started very quickly in lane two.

:14:54. > :15:03.Look how much ground he's taken out from Taplin. The young runner from

:15:04. > :15:09.Botswana, Sibanda is a massive tal in. The 18-year-old is leading them

:15:10. > :15:13.but Tapli and Brenes - who might just pay for the fast start. At the

:15:14. > :15:20.moment the two big names are pulling away. Brenes is holding form but

:15:21. > :15:25.look at Taplin. The youngster, Sibanda, moving into the third spot,

:15:26. > :15:31.finishing well and easing over the line in 45.16. Brenes gives his

:15:32. > :15:37.thighs a slap and they are big thighs. You can't miss them. Taplin,

:15:38. > :15:44.easy winner there. No sub-45 clocking for him.

:15:45. > :15:49.He was very comfortable on the end. That's the look of a man at ease.

:15:50. > :15:53.Perhaps not quite the quality of some of the other heats but Taplin

:15:54. > :15:59.had did what he had to do and able to ease down and conserve vital

:16:00. > :16:05.energy. That was very, very comfortable from Bralon Taplin.

:16:06. > :16:10.Katarina Johnson-Thompson has one final attempt in this third event,

:16:11. > :16:16.the shot put. She may have seen Thiam in the consecutive pool just

:16:17. > :16:20.to her right, throw a huge effort, 14.91m.

:16:21. > :16:24.Johnson-Thompson's best so far is 11.68m. She needs something over 12m

:16:25. > :16:32.here. Oh, no. She pun out of that again.

:16:33. > :16:36.That's not good and she knows it. That's an absolute mess. She'd have

:16:37. > :16:43.better doing a standing throw. I have to say. She looks a completely

:16:44. > :16:48.different athlete to what we saw in the high jump. The look in her eyes

:16:49. > :16:53.- you can see it - she just is lost. And her third attempt has unravelled

:16:54. > :17:01.what was a really good start to this heptathlon. 11.19m, no improvement.

:17:02. > :17:08.Greg Rutherford is in the stadium. The men's long jump qualification is

:17:09. > :17:09.coming up in five minutes' time. The defending Olympic Champion, World

:17:10. > :17:14.Champion, European and Commonwealth Games champion. He's won it all in

:17:15. > :17:23.the last four years. We caught up with him earlier.

:17:24. > :17:27.It's a process of feelings. You get into a rhythm so as you accelerate

:17:28. > :17:32.down the runway, it's all by feel. Your mind is in a Zen area, if you

:17:33. > :17:36.like, of doing what needs to be done to jump as far as you possibly can.

:17:37. > :17:42.Can you ever have imagined that we would have a night like this? That

:17:43. > :17:44.gold medal changed everything. It definitely gave me that the believe

:17:45. > :17:49.that I can win major championships. Before that, I'd been under the

:17:50. > :17:54.assumption fa if anything went well, there was a chance. Greg Rutherford

:17:55. > :17:59.is the Olympic Champion. I went from somebody who nobody knew at all in

:18:00. > :18:03.my local town really to that ginger guy that won that gold medal. That's

:18:04. > :18:07.fantastic. I'm happy to be remembered as the ginger guy. That's

:18:08. > :18:10.great. What a picture. What a night. Still to this day, when I meet

:18:11. > :18:15.somebody for the first time, they'll tell me where they were on

:18:16. > :18:18.super-Saturday. Once you take off, generally, if

:18:19. > :18:22.it's a good jump, you feel it straightaway. That's probably what

:18:23. > :18:27.all field eventers chase, is that one feeling of, "I've got it right"

:18:28. > :18:39.and I had that in London on the fourth round when I jumped the 31. I

:18:40. > :18:42.had it in the 41 at the worlds. Rutherford completes the grand slam.

:18:43. > :18:46.Last year, I wasn't the longest jumper in the world but I was the

:18:47. > :18:49.most consistent. I take that into the Olympics with a lot of

:18:50. > :18:52.confidence because consistency wins medals. I've come here nothing but

:18:53. > :18:56.to win again. It comes down to doing it when it matters and that's all

:18:57. > :19:01.I'm focused on. It's all about what happens in the Majors. I'm always a

:19:02. > :19:06.massive advocate of being happy away from the track. That's the biggest

:19:07. > :19:10.influence of being good at the track. Yay! To have what I have now,

:19:11. > :19:13.a lovely little boy that I can sort of go home to after sessions that

:19:14. > :19:18.have gone wrong and a very understanding partner in Susie who

:19:19. > :19:23.gets the fact that I can probably be a selfish, angry so-and-so at times.

:19:24. > :19:27.Hello, Milo. I try and have two separate parts of me, the part at

:19:28. > :19:30.the track which is serious when I'm getting the work done and the part

:19:31. > :19:32.of me at home which is very different. I don't want to talk

:19:33. > :19:37.about or thinking about long jump. I want to have fun with my son and I

:19:38. > :19:40.do and I love that and that's one of the greatest things for me. I'm

:19:41. > :19:45.probably in a better place than I've ever been now because I've got a

:19:46. > :19:51.real reason to go out and perform. I want my son to look back when he's

:19:52. > :19:57.old err and say, "Yeah, my dad was pretty cool!"

:19:58. > :20:00.Very good indeed and as usual, Greg has a unique way of preparing

:20:01. > :20:04.himself at these events. He seems to take himself away from everybody

:20:05. > :20:08.else and has his own little set-up, gets his towel out, lies down and

:20:09. > :20:13.gets into the zone and when he comes in, he's one of those athletes,

:20:14. > :20:19.Michael Johnson, whose Game face visibly turns on, doesn't it? I

:20:20. > :20:24.think there's two sides to Greg but he lives in his game face to me.

:20:25. > :20:29.You've got to say, I mean, what a cute kid. All out of sight. He's as

:20:30. > :20:34.quite as I -- cute as I don't know what. He's done well with Milo. I

:20:35. > :20:39.know you're going to keep interested in track items now because Wayde van

:20:40. > :20:43.Niekerk is on the track and he is the World Champion at 400m and

:20:44. > :20:51.Andrew Carter is calling this one. There he is.

:20:52. > :20:55.Outstanding athletes across all sprints and Michael Johnson would

:20:56. > :20:58.appreciate that. He's an extraordinary talent, the

:20:59. > :21:04.man from South Africa. This is the full behind-up for the third of

:21:05. > :21:11.seven heats. Luguelin Santos is in there.

:21:12. > :21:15.Jonathan Borlee. Javon Francis, the Jamaican champion there as well.

:21:16. > :21:19.Santos might have to run a season's best to go through. Five men in

:21:20. > :21:24.these heat have gone quicker than him this year.

:21:25. > :21:27.You've got Kishoyian, the Kenyan champion, in there as well and Wayde

:21:28. > :21:34.van Niekerk two from the outside. Should be comfortable enough here.

:21:35. > :21:38.Set... So three to go through

:21:39. > :21:41.automatically. Plus three fastest losers over the seven heats and

:21:42. > :21:45.Wayde van Niekerk already strolling, it seems, past Javon Francis, the

:21:46. > :21:49.Jamaican champion, the 21-year-old, who will try and respond now but

:21:50. > :21:59.Wayde van Niekerk makes it look so easy. Jonathan Borlee is beginning

:22:00. > :22:03.to struggle a little bit with Brandon Valentine-Parri is from St

:22:04. > :22:05.Vincent and the Grenadines running well.

:22:06. > :22:09.Alonso Russell running sharply. Keerk keerk keerk and just about

:22:10. > :22:16.alongside and now beginning to pull away from the about Heyman Russell

:22:17. > :22:27.and on the inside, Luguelin Santos has responded and will take one of

:22:28. > :22:35.the three places. He started strongly.

:22:36. > :22:40.He responded when he had to towards the finish but Wayde van Niekerk is

:22:41. > :22:43.the third quickest the world this year and he's a real medal contender

:22:44. > :22:46.in the final. Coming through easily, Michael.

:22:47. > :22:50.Yeah, absolutely. You know, Wayde van Niekerk knows that this is going

:22:51. > :22:56.to be a tough championships. He's got to get through these rounds. He

:22:57. > :22:58.did this pretty easily here, very smooth throughout the enture 400m.

:22:59. > :23:02.This is how you run the early rounds. You see there he hasn't

:23:03. > :23:07.expended much energy at all. This is the end of the race and he is not

:23:08. > :23:16.struggling. You see Santos struggling on the inside. But Wayde

:23:17. > :23:20.van Niekerk, that sub-10-second 100m, sub-20-second 200m this year

:23:21. > :23:24.has really, um, sent a message to the rest of the 400m runners that he

:23:25. > :23:29.has the speed, an incredible weapon at 400m. A very long stride, as you

:23:30. > :23:33.so there, for such a short 400m runner. He's not quite six feet tall

:23:34. > :23:38.but very relaxed here on the back stretch. This is exactly what you

:23:39. > :23:43.want. This is textbook preliminary-round running, very nice

:23:44. > :23:48.and easy get up to speed quickly and then maintain that. So you see right

:23:49. > :23:51.here he never looks like he's struggling at all in this 45:27

:23:52. > :23:56.early round, very nice and relaxed. It will put him in good stead for

:23:57. > :24:01.the rest of the rounds. The 400m is a difficult race, tough race, so you

:24:02. > :24:07.want to conserve as much energy as you possibly can in these rounds. He

:24:08. > :24:10.was fortunate to be able to do that. Santos, silver medallist in the 2012

:24:11. > :24:17.Olympics, by the way, starting in good shape. He hasn't been in that

:24:18. > :24:25.sort of form lately but he gave no problems at all. Wayde van Niekerk

:24:26. > :24:30.is talking now to Phil. Michael Johnson says it's a great

:24:31. > :24:34.qualification. You gave a great performance at the worlds. What's it

:24:35. > :24:37.like on the Olympic stage? Starting from scratch now, going through the

:24:38. > :24:40.rounds and grateful I'm through the heats healthy and feeling good.

:24:41. > :24:44.Everyone is excited about this event. Three of you could go head to

:24:45. > :24:46.head to head in the final. What's it like for you having to kind of keep

:24:47. > :24:56.in the present and not get too ahead of yourself? I'm just enjoying the

:24:57. > :24:58.blessing and the opportunity. I'm inspired to compete against

:24:59. > :25:02.world-class athletes and it's a blessing to be here. It's always

:25:03. > :25:11.great to see you. We appreciate you stopping. Thank you. Thank you so

:25:12. > :25:14.much. Thank you. Here's the standings in the women's heptathlon

:25:15. > :25:17.and the news is that Katarina Johnson-Thompson, who was leading,

:25:18. > :25:23.has slipped to sixth place after a bit of a shocker in the shot put.

:25:24. > :25:28.Jessica Ennis-Hill is in second place. So the youngsters are doing

:25:29. > :25:32.well, especially Nafissatou Thiam. So watch out for Akela Jones of

:25:33. > :25:38.Barbados. She's a very good long-jumper. That's tomorrow

:25:39. > :25:44.morning. Only the 200m to come. Thank you, Steve. What a difference

:25:45. > :25:46.an evening can make. We were full of positivity and joy at the

:25:47. > :25:49.performances this morning from Katarina Johnson-Thompson in

:25:50. > :25:53.particular in the high jump. That was a really, really poor shot put

:25:54. > :25:57.for her. Um, I'm not sure - I know you were saying this morning that it

:25:58. > :26:01.didn't make too much difference, you didn't feel, the high jump

:26:02. > :26:06.competition went on a long time because she was going right up to

:26:07. > :26:11.2.01m. Would she be fatigued at all? This day is two hours longer than

:26:12. > :26:14.the first day in London. They started at 9:30 this morning and

:26:15. > :26:17.they'll push to 11 o'clock tonight, two hours longer than day one in

:26:18. > :26:21.2012. It's a long schedule. Regardless of what happened in the

:26:22. > :26:24.high jump, it's a long programme for the heptathletes, which is

:26:25. > :26:28.challenging because you never really switch off. You're always thinking

:26:29. > :26:33.about the event and what might you need to do next. The ability to

:26:34. > :26:37.switch off is what you need to do but it's not easy. So I think she is

:26:38. > :26:41.suffering a little bit but let's be clear that her shot put needs work.

:26:42. > :26:48.We know that and that's why she was affected today. This is why she's

:26:49. > :26:51.down in sixth place after being top after her high all-purpose. This is

:26:52. > :26:56.her third throw, Denise. What always bothers me is her body language. She

:26:57. > :27:00.knows she's not good at the event and I need to see her being a bit

:27:01. > :27:06.more dynamic. What she needs to do at this point is really drive that

:27:07. > :27:11.but she opens up to that left-hand side, which gives the right leg no

:27:12. > :27:17.work to do she can't push off it, it's enactive and that is why she's

:27:18. > :27:23.not able to get any purchase on that shot and Steve Backley called it.

:27:24. > :27:27.She might as well as have done a standing shot at that point.

:27:28. > :27:30.Contrast that with Thiam, who had an excellent high jump as well and has

:27:31. > :27:35.built on that with the shot put here. Two PBs already today. She is

:27:36. > :27:39.a good shot putter. She's a great thrower. You'll see that in the

:27:40. > :27:44.javelin tomorrow. She is dynamic. She uses her legs. She looks slight

:27:45. > :27:48.but she's nearly 6'. She's one of the tallest women in the high jump

:27:49. > :27:53.but she is excellent and you can see what that throw meant to her. She

:27:54. > :27:58.knows she's put herself right in contention. She's a good second or

:27:59. > :28:02.so slower than both Jess and Katarina in the 200m, though, so

:28:03. > :28:04.they have it get up some points there, don't they? They have to go

:28:05. > :28:08.eyeballs out in the 200m, which there, don't they? They have to go

:28:09. > :28:11.later on this evening. Next up on the track, the European champion,

:28:12. > :28:14.later on this evening. Next up on Martin Rooney, is out there and he's

:28:15. > :28:20.ready for his heat in the 400m. Steve cram.

:28:21. > :28:25.-- Cram. Martyn has not the easiest of heats

:28:26. > :28:32.and he has to be on his game here. He has two or three experienced guys

:28:33. > :28:38.in there, a couple of speernls guys with Lalonde Gordon of Trinidad and

:28:39. > :28:44.Tobago and Chris Brown inside him there. But the big new talent from

:28:45. > :28:51.Botswana, the man who - I watched him running in the world junior

:28:52. > :28:57.championships, Baboloki Thebe who ran excellently but was disqualified

:28:58. > :29:06.for not sticking in his lane. People from Botswana have got a good 4 x

:29:07. > :29:12.400m team as well. Chris Brown, Martyn Rooney and then James

:29:13. > :29:19.Chiengjiek, running for the Olympic refugee team, formally from South

:29:20. > :29:25.Sudan. Janezic from Slovenia, then Gordon, Thebe, Walsh from Japan and

:29:26. > :29:31.Cuesta from the dommin can republic. To be safe, Rooney needs to be in

:29:32. > :29:35.the mid-40s what we've seen so far, certainly 45.6, 45.7 at least if

:29:36. > :29:39.he's not in the top three but he's off to a good start.

:29:40. > :29:43.Not helping him is the fact that the Olympic refugee representative is in

:29:44. > :29:47.lane three. He's passed him already so he needs to set his sights on

:29:48. > :30:03.those outside him in lanes four and five.

:30:04. > :30:08.this at the moment. Gordon leading from Thebe, the Slovenian in third

:30:09. > :30:13.and Rooney is coming, and he is challenging, and so is Chris Brown,

:30:14. > :30:18.will it be enough? He is not going to do that, he will not even be

:30:19. > :30:23.fourth. Chris Brown gets fourth. 45.24 the winning time for Gordon,

:30:24. > :30:31.that was good, we saw Martin at the training track, he was trying to run

:30:32. > :30:36.his race as not going out too hard, well Martin has done well, coming

:30:37. > :30:39.back quickly, in days gone by, but that was not one of those. I don't

:30:40. > :30:44.think he was helped by that empty lane in lane three. Nonetheless, he

:30:45. > :30:49.let Chris Brown passed him right at the end, and that could be really,

:30:50. > :30:56.really critical to him. As you said, he had a long way to look at the

:30:57. > :31:01.Slovenian athlete, and for someone who tries to finish strongly it was

:31:02. > :31:08.a long way to come back. I'm not sure that time is going to be quick

:31:09. > :31:18.enough. Thebe the Botswanan, he seemed to be struggling. Lalonde

:31:19. > :31:24.Gordon and Martyn Rooney, again, it did not look too comfortable in the

:31:25. > :31:28.latter stages of the race. I think the mistake was made earlier in the,

:31:29. > :31:33.when you know you have got to run your outside the refugee runner who

:31:34. > :31:37.is not to provide you any sort of competition, you have most of the

:31:38. > :31:41.field farther up ahead, and this is where Martin Gordon loses it. He is

:31:42. > :31:45.not really pushing down that back straight, and he lost contact with

:31:46. > :31:48.the rest of the field, the athletes that he was going to need to compete

:31:49. > :31:53.with for those top three places, and what you will see now, he realises

:31:54. > :31:56.that, that they are gone, now you see him actually starting to

:31:57. > :32:01.accelerate. You should not be able to accelerate the last 100 metres or

:32:02. > :32:07.400 metres -- of a 400 metres. That is poor running by Martyn Rooney. He

:32:08. > :32:12.is a much more experienced athlete than that. He has been inconsistent

:32:13. > :32:16.of the last couple of years, false starting at the London games, those

:32:17. > :32:20.are the sort of things we get from Martyn Rooney. It is unfortunate,

:32:21. > :32:22.because he is in the shape to be able to get through to that next

:32:23. > :32:27.round, but it is now doubtful that he will it is a massive mistake here

:32:28. > :32:35.in terms of how he actually executed this race, and that is unfortunate.

:32:36. > :32:37.Understandable disappointment, Michael, from Martyn Rooney,

:32:38. > :32:40.realising you are the second fastest loser at the moment. Still have a

:32:41. > :32:51.chance with one race to go, but describe your frustration. ... You

:32:52. > :32:56.come to the Olympics to perform at your best, I feel like I am in PD

:32:57. > :33:01.shape, and I don't know what I was doing in the first 250 I thought I

:33:02. > :33:06.would come home or right, but I must have gone through 23 seconds, I

:33:07. > :33:12.don't know. I am just gutted for myself. Everybody supporting me,

:33:13. > :33:16.hopefully if I sneak through then I will sort it out tomorrow, and try

:33:17. > :33:19.and do some damage. But I am just gutted. We appreciate your talking

:33:20. > :33:42.to us, thanks a lot. His description was not that wrong.

:33:43. > :33:48.Pretty concise analysis. 45.60, he is in with a chance of qualifying, I

:33:49. > :33:57.think the fact that he let Chris Brown by him probably annoys him of

:33:58. > :34:10.anything else. Greg Rutherford is in the stadium, he is about to jump in

:34:11. > :34:18.the first round of the long jump qualification, 8.15 to progress to

:34:19. > :34:23.the final on Saturday. Geoffrey Henderson is a contender. He has one

:34:24. > :34:29.of the longest jumps in the world this year, was not great last year

:34:30. > :34:37.in Beijing. First attempt, 8.15 or better, which that is, which gets

:34:38. > :34:41.you into Saturday's final. Henderson has jumped a pretty good jump there,

:34:42. > :34:45.it would seem. He does not look happy with it. But that is how they

:34:46. > :34:50.do it. The first round qualification, go beyond auto

:34:51. > :34:56.qualifying, you can walk out of the stadium and let the others battle

:34:57. > :34:59.on. Greg Rutherford had not even started yet, and it looks like

:35:00. > :35:07.Henderson has already booked a place. It is 8.205 Henderson. Be on

:35:08. > :35:17.autopilot lying. -- beyond auto qualifying. Heat five of the men's

:35:18. > :35:41.400 metres. What a lineup, some big names here. Lashawn Merritt in this

:35:42. > :35:46.race. There is Lashawn Merritt, for Malaga champion, fastest man this

:35:47. > :35:57.year, the only man this year to have gone below 44 seconds, quickest over

:35:58. > :36:01.200 as well. Isaac Makwala, fifth in the World Championships, he had run

:36:02. > :36:16.faster in the semi-final and just dropped off a little bit the final.

:36:17. > :36:38.Harouni, from Qatar, formerly from Saddam. -- Saddam. -- Sudan.

:36:39. > :36:47.Estefani of Brazil is in lane seven, a bit of a buzz for him. Let's see

:36:48. > :36:50.how Lashawn Merritt runs this, on the outside, so they want to work

:36:51. > :37:07.off, but still should not present a problem for him. Away they go.

:37:08. > :37:15.Keeping an eye on Haroun, the world junior champion. On the outside,

:37:16. > :37:23.Lashawn Merritt ambling down the back straight, he looks to be

:37:24. > :37:32.building a decent lead. Makwala has to work a bit. Haroun in lane three

:37:33. > :37:37.with a lot to do. Another look to his left, nobody there, Lashawn

:37:38. > :37:44.Merritt looking straight and looking very comfortable, it is Makwala

:37:45. > :37:56.coming through, Haroun is struggling, finishing strongly was

:37:57. > :38:03.Butrym from Ukraine, for the third fastest place. Lashawn Merritt

:38:04. > :38:10.pretty comfortable, no one else but him in that race really. They were

:38:11. > :38:16.all chasing Lashawn Merritt, a lot of people not running particular

:38:17. > :38:22.well there, I know that Haroun finish quickly, Makwala has just

:38:23. > :38:34.held on, Lashawn Merritt looking good, the big three, he is one of

:38:35. > :38:37.them, he is looking very easy. Lashawn Merritt looking very good

:38:38. > :38:41.there through this early qualification. This is how you would

:38:42. > :38:46.want to run the early rounds, opposite to what we just saw with

:38:47. > :38:51.Martyn Rooney, you want to get up to speed, which is what he does very

:38:52. > :38:54.well, and then just relax. On the outside of the track year with no

:38:55. > :38:57.wonder what, he does have the benefit of the big screens at either

:38:58. > :39:00.end to see what his position is in relation to the other runners, which

:39:01. > :39:05.would allow him to run very relaxed, as you see here, just very relaxed

:39:06. > :39:11.running. He has got fantastic 200 metre speeds, fastest man in the

:39:12. > :39:15.world this year over 200 metres, and will contest that later. But right

:39:16. > :39:21.now just very relaxed in this early round of the 400 metres, 2008

:39:22. > :39:28.Olympic champion, will look to regain that from James who won that

:39:29. > :39:31.in 2012. Looking very consistent and healthy, and that bodes well for his

:39:32. > :39:36.chances of this fantastic 400 metres, that we will see here in Rio

:39:37. > :39:42.this week. Great qualification thereby Lashawn Merritt. Talking

:39:43. > :39:48.over that replay their, Michael Johnson saying how control you look.

:39:49. > :39:54.You come into dealing pigs as one of this favourite, had you feel about

:39:55. > :40:01.that? -- these Olympics. It felt so good. I was running as smooth as

:40:02. > :40:06.possible, 45.2 first round, it is good. You bring so much experience

:40:07. > :40:09.to these Olympic Games, you have been here before, you've done it

:40:10. > :40:14.before, is that some kind of benefit to you ahead of your other rivals

:40:15. > :40:20.here, do you think? It is. I was not able to compete in 2012, so I am

:40:21. > :40:28.here to win it. And not just this, you are going for a 200- 400 double.

:40:29. > :40:41.I will just focus on each round. Thank you for talking to us. We have

:40:42. > :40:46.seen two of the big three,, Lashawn Merritt there. The good news Martyn

:40:47. > :40:51.Rooney is that his 45.60 still leaves him with two heats to go,

:40:52. > :40:59.still leaves him one of the fastest loser places. Here is Greg

:41:00. > :41:04.Rutherford. Start his bid to retain his Allenby title, the first round

:41:05. > :41:11.of qualifying, the first step in that direction, 8.15 or better, is

:41:12. > :41:17.what is needed to get into Saturday's final. We have already

:41:18. > :41:24.seen Henderson, the American, go out to 8.2 zero. Rutherford, round one,

:41:25. > :41:30.he is fast on the approach, it is a big jump, just on that... On that

:41:31. > :41:39.8.20 mark, but it will not be measured. He was over the board. An

:41:40. > :41:43.uncharacteristic start, quite significantly beyond that red line,

:41:44. > :41:48.you can see the start of the plasticine, Rutherford, usually so

:41:49. > :41:58.meticulous, but he will need to adjust his run-up. Wang of China,

:41:59. > :42:07.bronze in Beijing, last year, the teenager, taking the bronze last

:42:08. > :42:16.year -- Huang. What can he do in this round of qualification? That is

:42:17. > :42:23.a big jump from Huang. That is quite a big statement to him. He is

:42:24. > :42:30.clearly up to this. It is going to be a really interesting final, we

:42:31. > :42:35.hope, fingers crossed, that Greg Rutherford will be involved, of

:42:36. > :42:39.course, but he has to go beyond that 8.20, or be in the top 12. Huang

:42:40. > :42:48.looks like he has booked a place, Henderson looks like he is in, 8.24

:42:49. > :42:51.to Huang. A good jump. There is great, he will need to move his

:42:52. > :42:55.checkmark back. The athletes have a mark on the runway, he will move it

:42:56. > :43:02.back, maybe just ten or 15 centimetres. Make that adjustment,

:43:03. > :43:11.and get ready for round two. Three attempts to make the final. Let's

:43:12. > :43:15.hope he makes adjustments, a view suggested there, and he can get

:43:16. > :43:20.through safely. I'm sure he will. Talking about getting through

:43:21. > :43:23.safely, Matt Hudson Smith with just two make heats to come, Martyn

:43:24. > :43:34.Rooney still hanging on by his fingertips, the two fastest losers,

:43:35. > :43:41.Matt Hudson Smith has Kirani James to content with. The UK champion,

:43:42. > :43:50.the man who burst onto the scene in 2014, it European silver-medallist,

:43:51. > :43:53.and has shown superb ability in big races, often, although it has to be

:43:54. > :43:56.said in the European Championships which were held just before these

:43:57. > :44:02.Olympic Games, on the final leg, it looked as though he did what he

:44:03. > :44:06.normally does, and he did fade rather and end up with the bronze.

:44:07. > :44:15.But he bounced back really well in the London Diamond league, good

:44:16. > :44:21.performance from him there. Kirani James, we talk about the big three,

:44:22. > :44:26.we have seen Lashawn Merritt, now it is Kirani James, the defending

:44:27. > :44:37.champion, looking to get his defence under way here. Verburg from the

:44:38. > :44:46.United States will be a good challenge for Matthew Hudson Smith.

:44:47. > :44:57.We have MacDonald from Jamaica, George of Guiana, the top three go

:44:58. > :45:02.through, and the three fastest loser spots available, I certainly hope

:45:03. > :45:17.that Matt Hudson Smith should be OK year. -- here.

:45:18. > :45:26.Season's best, personal bests, as ever, in the Olympic Games, that all

:45:27. > :45:29.goes out the window. But Matt Hudson-Smith is certainly

:45:30. > :45:35.in good enough form to contend with what's ahead of him here.

:45:36. > :45:46.So heat six. Hudson-Smith in lane two.

:45:47. > :45:53.Safely away, Kirani James ambles out of the blocks and gets that huge

:45:54. > :45:59.frame of his moving nicely. David Verburg has started quickly, as he

:46:00. > :46:03.often does. He needs to hang on to the American's shirt tails, Matt

:46:04. > :46:06.Hudson-Smith. Kirani James is watching Winston George of Guyana in

:46:07. > :46:13.the yellow going well. Now the long legs of Kirani James are starting to

:46:14. > :46:17.really move. Rusheen McDonald going well for Jamaica. Matt Hudson-Smith

:46:18. > :46:25.is running a good bend. The Brit looks strong here. He has to stay

:46:26. > :46:30.strong in the home straight because the Jamaican, Rusheen McDonald.

:46:31. > :46:32.Kirani James at a cannoter, then Rusheen McDonald and Matt

:46:33. > :46:37.Hudson-Smith safely through. That's the questioningest so far. Kirani

:46:38. > :46:41.James just dipped a few hundredths inside the fastest so far. He was

:46:42. > :46:46.easing back nicely, watching the times coming in and I think Martyn

:46:47. > :46:51.Rooney is still just about OK but we'll tidy all that up for you. A

:46:52. > :46:59.contrast of styles in there as well. Matthew Hudson-Smith is an elegant

:47:00. > :47:04.runner, working well off Verburg and Rusheen McDonald is ungayly, a

:47:05. > :47:07.muscular upper-body start. They were talking about Wayde van Niekerk,

:47:08. > :47:10.LaShawn Merritt and Kirani James, the big three, who looked so

:47:11. > :47:15.impressive this season and didn't Kirani James look so impressive,

:47:16. > :47:20.able to look all around him, take in his surroundings, well aware he's a

:47:21. > :47:29.long way clear. All the others were fighting so hard behind

:47:30. > :47:36.Well, Matthew Hudson-Smith here with the nice easy run here. He's gotten

:47:37. > :47:40.up to speed. He's a little bit... If you contrast him to what we saw with

:47:41. > :47:43.LaShawn Merritt and some of the others, he's a little bit tight in

:47:44. > :47:47.the upper body there, you see him kind of lurching ahead. He wants to

:47:48. > :47:51.relax that a little bit if he wants to get down below 45 seconds. That

:47:52. > :47:54.will have to happen. I thought he executed this race very well for the

:47:55. > :47:58.early rounds and did exactly what he needed to do to put himself into

:47:59. > :48:04.contention right here coming off of this bend. I see David Verburg from

:48:05. > :48:08.the USA starting to struggle again. Kirani James relaxed. It's tough to

:48:09. > :48:11.run the inside of the lane as well. He's not in contact with the likes

:48:12. > :48:14.of Kirani James on the outside. But Matthew looking a little bit relaxed

:48:15. > :48:19.here on the home stretch. That's good. That's a good sign that he's

:48:20. > :48:23.got a little bit left for the next round, which he will need, because

:48:24. > :48:27.the times will certainly drop and require him to run a little bit

:48:28. > :48:30.faster to get into that final but he certainly has the potential to get

:48:31. > :48:36.into that final. He's run consistent this year. He had a good race at the

:48:37. > :48:43.Anniversary Games and started his campaign here in Rio well also.

:48:44. > :48:47.Michael Johnson says you've got the potential to make the final. That

:48:48. > :48:54.run backs that off? It was difficult in lane two. Everyone told me to

:48:55. > :49:05.treat it like a time and I thought I had second. I made a radioingy

:49:06. > :49:11.mistake in the fact that the Ru -- Rusheen McDonald take second. I got

:49:12. > :49:15.through. That's all I could do. When you qualified for the team back in

:49:16. > :49:18.Birmingham, I remember the look on your face. You couldn't believe you

:49:19. > :49:22.were an Olympian. Now you're here, has it lived up to expectations? Um,

:49:23. > :49:30.yeah. It's very, um... Still very surreal. And... I'm just taking it

:49:31. > :49:33.round by round. The semifinals will be really tough and, you you've just

:49:34. > :49:36.got to take every round like a final really so I'm excited.

:49:37. > :49:40.I suppose it is the balance of being excited and enjoying the moment, but

:49:41. > :49:46.getting the job done, like you just have. Yeah, definitely. The first

:49:47. > :49:52.part's done now. Onto the next round. Everyone here is very close,

:49:53. > :49:56.as you can tell by this round. It's who wants it more, really. We wish

:49:57. > :50:02.you well for the semis, Matt. Thank you. Thank you.

:50:03. > :50:08.Well, Kirani James looking very, very good indeed. Matt Hudson-Smith

:50:09. > :50:13.just getting a congratulatory high-five from him. We'll just tidy

:50:14. > :50:22.the result up and, as I said, Martyn Rooney is still hanging on. David

:50:23. > :50:25.Verburg moves ahead of him but Winston George was not quicker than

:50:26. > :50:33.Rooney. Martline Rooney is currently third of the fastest losers with one

:50:34. > :50:36.more heat to come. This this is Manyonga of South

:50:37. > :50:44.Africa. Foul in the first round in the long jump qualification. Greg

:50:45. > :50:49.Rutherford also had a foul. It looks as though Manyonga has done

:50:50. > :50:59.something... Oh, actually, they'll look at. This he needs a white flag

:51:00. > :51:02.here and he's got one, so the runner-up from the African

:51:03. > :51:08.Championships he slightly chopped there, didn't he? Just shortened his

:51:09. > :51:14.stride, looking down at the distance boards. You can see that wonderful

:51:15. > :51:27.shot on the side of the pit. Wonderful shot and agility in the

:51:28. > :51:30.air, reaching as much as he can. His measurement is just shy of

:51:31. > :51:36.autoqualifying but it's likely to be enough.

:51:37. > :51:39.Rutherford is 13th to jump. I hope he's not superstitious. But it means

:51:40. > :51:46.he's got a long time to wait. And that's a tough thing in qualifying.

:51:47. > :51:52.He'll have a good - what? - maybe 15 to 20 minutes to wait. But he knows

:51:53. > :52:01.what to do. I'm sure he'll get it right next time. So the final heat -

:52:02. > :52:05.we've seen some outstanding athletes so far but it's perhaps not packed

:52:06. > :52:10.with the greatest talent, this one. Certainly some very quick men in

:52:11. > :52:20.there. Steven Gardnor in lane one, the young Bahamian, can go very,

:52:21. > :52:30.very quickly. Ali Khamis of Bahrain goes in lane

:52:31. > :52:36.seven. Pav yell Maslak and his familiar arm-conversation. El Maslak

:52:37. > :52:46.and his familiar arm-conversation. Pavel Maslak has been outstanding

:52:47. > :52:58.indoors this season. Steven Gardinor, not yet 21, ran 44.27 last

:52:59. > :53:06.year. Outside him, you've got Eraiyokan of

:53:07. > :53:12.Nigeria, Kanemaru of Japan in three, Maslak goes in four there, Rafal

:53:13. > :53:19.Omelko of Poland in lane five, Anas of India, the new Indian

:53:20. > :53:26.record-holder, in lane six, Khamis of Bahrain in lane seven and

:53:27. > :53:31.Liemarvin Bonevacia from the Netherlands here but imagine also a

:53:32. > :53:32.phantom Martyn Rooney, third of the fastest losers, going around this

:53:33. > :53:46.one too. This is the final Three to go through automatically

:53:47. > :53:50.and Steven Gardiner working from the sometimes-difficult lane one. He's

:53:51. > :53:59.got it all outside him but it's pretty tight as well. N Maslak-man

:54:00. > :54:04.gone off quickly, working off Omelko, the Polish athlete, who was

:54:05. > :54:08.bronze behind him in the European Championships last season when

:54:09. > :54:10.Maslak was so dominant, as he always is.

:54:11. > :54:17.Steven Gardiner is working well in lane one. Three to go through

:54:18. > :54:21.automatically and also going strongly is Liemarvin Bonevacia of

:54:22. > :54:26.the Netherlands on the outside. Abbas has done all he can now.

:54:27. > :54:34.Behind him it's a fierce battle for the other two places and Bonevacia

:54:35. > :54:38.and Gardiner will take it. 45.13m for -- for the winner and the rest

:54:39. > :54:42.some way behind so I think Martyn Rooney will be fine, absolutely

:54:43. > :54:49.fine, despite running poorly, as he put it.

:54:50. > :54:53.Certainly Ali Khamis Abbas of Bahrain went out pretty strongly

:54:54. > :54:57.there and was able to, again, look around and see that he'd done the

:54:58. > :55:01.job but actually I'm looking at the times now... You and I both looking.

:55:02. > :55:06.Sadly, you were right, it was right on it but it means Martyn Rooney is

:55:07. > :55:10.out and so is... Well, they're going to have to work this out because

:55:11. > :55:14.Maslak and Omelko have been given exactly the same time in fourth and

:55:15. > :55:18.fifth. Either way, whichever of those two get through, the news is

:55:19. > :55:24.that Rooney is not through because his time was 45.60. He runs well

:55:25. > :55:28.here, Khamis for Bahrain. He attacked this. I thought Gardiner

:55:29. > :55:31.would come certificate genely through. He just held it together

:55:32. > :55:37.nicely on the inside. Look at Maslak. He was coming and then just

:55:38. > :55:42.stopped. That's not normal for him. He normally comes nicely through and

:55:43. > :55:47.he finishes in fifth place. He's been given fifth, the same time as

:55:48. > :55:50.Omelko in fourth. We'll tidy it all up for you but sadly, the news is

:55:51. > :55:57.that Martyn Rooney will not go through to the semifinal. I thought

:55:58. > :56:04.that was enough of a gap back there but he's out by 0.06 seconds.

:56:05. > :56:15.Omelko and Maslak both go through as fastest losers. Ali KhamisAbbas goes

:56:16. > :56:20.through there. Well, this session not necessarily

:56:21. > :56:24.going quite the way we'd hoped, certainly for British athletes

:56:25. > :56:28.today. We've seen disappointing throws from Jessica Ennis-Hill and

:56:29. > :56:32.Katarina Johnson-Thompson in the heptathlon. The women's 200m is

:56:33. > :56:36.coming up but that, for Martyn Rooney, Michael, he obviously was

:56:37. > :56:40.really devastated with his performance and he's out. He's gone.

:56:41. > :56:44.As he should be, he should be disappointed in that because it

:56:45. > :56:48.wasn't the type of performance that he would have known he needed to put

:56:49. > :56:51.in. He didn't execute the race properly at all. But he's been in

:56:52. > :56:55.this position before. OK. We're going straight back to Steve Backley

:56:56. > :56:59.because maybe, Michael, we'll get some joy now. Greg Rutherford is out

:57:00. > :57:05.on the runway. Steve Backley. He's out. He looks keen in this second

:57:06. > :57:07.round. A foul in the first round. Just encroached on to the

:57:08. > :57:12.Plasticine. The jump wasn't measured.

:57:13. > :57:16.I've got to say no-one's setting the world alight out of all the 32

:57:17. > :57:21.competitors in this qualification round. Only 12 will advance to

:57:22. > :57:26.tomorrow's final. And at the moment, in the early

:57:27. > :57:41.stages - it's only the second round - but at the moment that's a jump of

:57:42. > :57:48.7.79m, that's the 12th place. Greg Rutherford looking to make

:57:49. > :57:52.small adjustments. He's moved his run-up back. You can see the check

:57:53. > :57:57.mark of exactly where he'll start. He'll have measured that to the

:57:58. > :57:59.millimetre. Rutherford, Olympic Champion, Round 2 of long jump

:58:00. > :58:05.qualification. Oh, he hit that board hard that

:58:06. > :58:13.time. He likes it. No. Another foul for Rutherford. So it wasn't - he

:58:14. > :58:19.knew he was over the wood... By the smallest of margins and the

:58:20. > :58:26.pressure's on for Rutherford. He did make an adjustment but it

:58:27. > :58:40.wasn't enough. Two fouls. Only one more attempt... Well, Rutherford

:58:41. > :58:44.under immense pressure now in this. He has another ten-minute or

:58:45. > :58:50.15-minute wait for his next attempt, one more remaining. All those hours

:58:51. > :58:55.and hours of hard work, of sweat and toil. He comes here to defend his

:58:56. > :58:58.Olympic title. He has one jump to salvage his Olympic Games. We're

:58:59. > :59:03.going to leave the stadium right now and hand you back to Jason Mohammad

:59:04. > :59:08.for some swimming action but we will be back here later.

:59:09. > :59:11.Thank you very much indeed. And don't forget - just go to the

:59:12. > :59:15.Freeview red button for uninterrupted coverage of the track

:59:16. > :59:19.and field programme so if you want to watch athletics all night and

:59:20. > :59:25.nothing else, press the red button now. We've had Great Britain's Round

:59:26. > :59:29.1 match against France there. Table tennis right now, continuous

:59:30. > :59:33.athletics and BBC Sport has 24 live streams available at the Games. You

:59:34. > :59:37.can watch it all. Don't forget the big Brazil v Australia women's

:59:38. > :59:40.football match is also available. So go to the BBC Sport website for

:59:41. > :59:44.further details. Right. Over the past couple of nights, we've had

:59:45. > :59:47.some fantastic moments in the Olympic swimming pool. We've had

:59:48. > :59:48.tears and we've had dancing. And that's just from the presenters.

:59:49. > :00:06.Evening, all! Olympians in the final site, the

:00:07. > :00:20.crowd is going to be out tonight. We have Michael Phelps, in a 100

:00:21. > :00:28.metre butterfly, last time there was a pretty serious stare off,. The

:00:29. > :00:38.whole box, Michael Phelps staring, there will probably a bit less of

:00:39. > :00:41.that, a lot of different athletes. Michael Phelps has such an army of

:00:42. > :00:47.fans that somebody got his face tattooed on their arm, that stare.

:00:48. > :00:51.If we can find that on Twitter, it is a woman from Canada who actually

:00:52. > :00:58.got his serious face tattooed onto her arm. It came out about two days

:00:59. > :01:04.ago, and someone has done that already? That is dedication. But

:01:05. > :01:12.plenty of people decide to get their idols tattooed on them, don't they.

:01:13. > :01:23.Not that kind of moody shot! Their idle? Like me? Laughing Mac.

:01:24. > :01:39.There is nothing wrong with a bit of love for your idle. (LAUGHS). She

:01:40. > :01:53.was going to draw it on me. I went "You'd better stick to picture on

:01:54. > :01:55.me." Talking of idols, the 200 metre backstroke is at first, Nowell

:01:56. > :02:05.champion, now a first, Nowell champion, Noarlunga champion Emma...

:02:06. > :02:13.-- no Olympic champion in this. It is going to be for the minor places.

:02:14. > :02:20.Just because... She won the 100 metre and just keeps going. The

:02:21. > :02:29.other girls have their work cut out. Keep your eye on Hosu.

:02:30. > :02:46.Is going to be interesting. I am slightly worried. I am missing Emily

:02:47. > :03:00.C bomb, with those two out -- Emily Seebohm. With them out, it will be

:03:01. > :03:04.up for anyone. A really historic night with Ledecky. With those two

:03:05. > :03:35.out, I can't... The final women's 200 metres

:03:36. > :03:43.backstroke, Hosszu straight up into, she looks very powerful already. She

:03:44. > :03:53.will attack it from the front, Caldwell does come back, she has a

:03:54. > :04:08.ready won the 400 medley, difficult to see past her in this 200. Hosszu

:04:09. > :04:13.had a stunning turn there. Dirado was with her for the first 50

:04:14. > :04:17.metres. She is just punishing, she blasted out and the rest of the

:04:18. > :04:24.field unable to live with this pace WriteNow. Look at that. Dirado

:04:25. > :04:29.actually beat Missy Franklin at the US finals, she is coming into this

:04:30. > :04:36.competition as fast as American. It is Hosszu of Hungary, Caldwell does

:04:37. > :04:40.come back, but she is really going to have to start making a move seen

:04:41. > :04:45.because Hosszu still swimming away from Caldwell, but not from Dirado.

:04:46. > :04:53.Interesting move. Dirado coming back strongly. Dirado three from the top

:04:54. > :04:59.with a black cap. I wonder if Dirado made her move to a early. It is when

:05:00. > :05:04.Hosszu is under pressure, we saw in the 200 metre medley, she struggled

:05:05. > :05:13.a little bit, but a bit of -- another beautiful turn. The fastest

:05:14. > :05:18.and so far has been Dirado with the best turn by miles is Hosszu. Coming

:05:19. > :05:24.back is Dirado. Is Hosszu going to be challenged, Dirado is coming

:05:25. > :05:29.back. She got the silver medal to Hosszu in the 400 metre medley, it

:05:30. > :05:36.is going to be very close, goodness me, it was Dirado! Dirado with the

:05:37. > :05:45.gold right on the finish. Goodness me, timed to perfection. It was the

:05:46. > :05:53.last stretch, gold to Dirado of the USA, Hosszu Da Silva, Caldwell the

:05:54. > :05:58.bronze. Goodness me. What a fantastic comeback for Dorado. --

:05:59. > :06:04.Dirado. She has her first individual gold here, she has an individual

:06:05. > :06:10.gold, silver and bronze. The guts and the courage to let Acree three

:06:11. > :06:14.do that and know that you have got something in the back end, I cannot

:06:15. > :06:20.wait to see the finish on the replay. Hosszu obviously

:06:21. > :06:24.disappointed, still trying to muster a smile with her three gold medals,

:06:25. > :06:30.but Dirado, here is the start, and Hosszu brilliant on the start and

:06:31. > :06:37.turns, but I cannot wait to see the finish. They are both empty, the

:06:38. > :06:48.energy was... He we go. Dirado hit first, and Oh! Show that again! Oh

:06:49. > :06:57.my goodness! Are you sure? Hosszu looking over, the second she had

:06:58. > :07:08.touched, looking over, and Dirado... She cannot believe it. That is quite

:07:09. > :07:11.special. What is even more amazing is that Katie Ledecky is going to

:07:12. > :07:18.join her at her club team. Well done. The defending a Libyan

:07:19. > :07:20.champion -- defending Olympic champion was not there, the

:07:21. > :07:27.defending world champion was not there, and that is what happens when

:07:28. > :07:32.you go for it. Brilliant. Have a look at the scoreboard again. That

:07:33. > :07:38.is what we need to see. There is the scoreboard, it shows that Dirado of

:07:39. > :07:42.the USA is the women's Olympic 200 metres backstroke champion, 61

:07:43. > :07:54.hundredths of a second a head of Hosszu from Hungary, she will have a

:07:55. > :08:03.silver in her pocket. Wow! I'm going to have to call a taxi. (LAUGHS).

:08:04. > :08:11.What a race! It was so stunning, so controlled, so perfect, Hosszu came

:08:12. > :08:14.out so strong, and Dirado, we have seen her in a lot of events this

:08:15. > :08:19.week, it was amazing for her to get that gold medal in an individual

:08:20. > :08:23.event, she was part of that medley team, the USA are just dominating.

:08:24. > :08:30.Absolutely amazing to see that comeback. Here is Michael Phelps in

:08:31. > :08:38.the room ahead of his metre butterfly final, he has had a

:08:39. > :08:45.phenomenal week. He is the oldest individual gold medal --

:08:46. > :08:51.gold-medallist in the pool. He still seems at the top of his game. I know

:08:52. > :08:54.a lot of things went on in that time, but he sort of reassessed

:08:55. > :09:01.things and came back, because he wanted to come back. He was doing it

:09:02. > :09:06.because he had to. Andy Jamison has had the privilege of commentating on

:09:07. > :09:12.every single Olympic medal that Michael Phelps has one, which sends

:09:13. > :09:19.into the top the commentator pack. You must really enjoy yourself, you

:09:20. > :09:25.must be running out of ways to describe Michael Phelps. To be quite

:09:26. > :09:35.frank I am running out of ways to describe 26 political so far, 22 of

:09:36. > :09:43.them gold. Two still was and two bronzes to go with those 22 golds.

:09:44. > :09:52.Here is Tom Shields in lane seven, and Michael Phelps is next to him.

:09:53. > :10:06.Let's listen to the crowd. Michael Phelps... APPLAUSE. There is his mum

:10:07. > :10:19.and his wife, and his little baby. Michael Phelps is in lane two. And

:10:20. > :10:29.this guy could win, the Hungarian. He switched events from the

:10:30. > :10:35.individual medley to the butterfly. Zhulao Li is next to Phelps from

:10:36. > :10:46.China. He had that difficult evening last night, straight after his

:10:47. > :10:55.victory. For a while, with about three strokes to go, he was not

:10:56. > :11:03.sure. There is chat Le Clos, the world champion, he won four years

:11:04. > :11:11.ago. Here is the fastest qualifier, he swum very quickly indeed, the

:11:12. > :11:24.Singaporean, schooling. -- Schooling. Le Clos went faster last

:11:25. > :11:35.year than Phelps. It will be a very close race, I think Michael Phelps

:11:36. > :11:39.knows that. Schooling went to school and did training in the United

:11:40. > :11:44.States, he has looked really good. I am not sure how the Hungarian is

:11:45. > :11:51.going to get on. They have all done a Michael Phelps to Michael Phelps.

:11:52. > :11:57.Everyone else still has their tops on, making him wait, while he is

:11:58. > :12:06.standing on the blocks. Add you make Michael Phelps weight. This will be

:12:07. > :12:10.covered with the biggest test of Michael Phelps' Olympic career. The

:12:11. > :12:17.final of the men's 100 metres butterfly, he is not nailed on for

:12:18. > :12:33.gold. Schooling in lane four of Singapore. Phelps up in lane two.

:12:34. > :12:53.Just asking the crowd to be silent at the start.

:12:54. > :13:02.Michael Phelps does not go out that quickly down the first 50, he always

:13:03. > :13:11.comes back very fast. I think he will... Checkout Schooling. Right on

:13:12. > :13:16.the world record line, ahead of Michael Phelps, and Schooling is

:13:17. > :13:23.ripping it apart down the first 50 metres. Nearly half a second faster

:13:24. > :13:29.than Michael Phelps. Phelps has massive amount of work to do here.

:13:30. > :13:36.Schooling just starting to break away, Phelps will start coming,

:13:37. > :13:42.Schooling is winning away from everybody. Phelps is charging, but

:13:43. > :13:46.it looks like it will be Schooling. Schooling, Joseph Schooling, D-Link

:13:47. > :13:59.champion, in the 100 metres butterfly, -- the Olympic champion.

:14:00. > :14:04.50.39, Le Clos equal second with Cseh, Michael Phelps also equal

:14:05. > :14:11.second. A 3-way tie this silver. Michael Phelps, Le Clos, Cseh, all

:14:12. > :14:15.got the silver medal, I have never seen that, I have never seen a 3-way

:14:16. > :14:20.tie this silver. All his protagonists, probably the last

:14:21. > :14:30.individual race, we will see him in, and he will stand on the podium

:14:31. > :14:33.alongside Le Clos and Laszlo Cseh. Joseph Schooling was absolutely

:14:34. > :14:39.brilliant from the word go, right here, 15 metres, he extended the

:14:40. > :14:46.lead and extended the lead, and he won by 0.8 seconds. He won by far

:14:47. > :14:52.too much, to be quite frank. That is Singapore's first ever Olympic gold

:14:53. > :14:56.medal. He won by miles. Schooling, that was utterly brilliant. I

:14:57. > :15:03.thought all the way through, every single round, faster and faster, we

:15:04. > :15:10.both thought he was a threat to Michael Phelps. Wow, butter, Shia,

:15:11. > :15:20.unadulterated delight. The newer Libby champion -- sheer delight. It

:15:21. > :15:23.is just that schooling -- Joseph Schooling from Singapore. He is the

:15:24. > :15:44.Libby champion. Singapore's first ever Olympic gold. -- Olympic.

:15:45. > :15:53.Three-way tie for silver. I wonder who they'll give it to? Phelps is

:15:54. > :15:58.there, Le Clos is there, Czeh is there. You'd be brave to go against

:15:59. > :16:04.Phelps. Three-way tie for silver, Phelps, Le Clos and Czeh.

:16:05. > :16:09.Cancel Mark Foster's taxi. To be fair, you've called it in the last

:16:10. > :16:12.couple of days, you say Joe Schooling was going to cause an

:16:13. > :16:16.upset. What just happened? Two races in a row... In the heat and the

:16:17. > :16:20.semi, he was could be sistent. Michael Phelps, you thought - you

:16:21. > :16:24.never bet against him but he obviously didn't have the speed.

:16:25. > :16:28.Next up, it's Britain's Jazz Carlin, chasing her second medal of this

:16:29. > :16:33.Games. She's already got a silver in the 400m earlier in the week. Let's

:16:34. > :16:39.relive that moment, because it was so, so good, wasn't it, to see Jazz

:16:40. > :16:43.get a silver medal and get on to the podium. There he she is in the call

:16:44. > :16:47.room. It's a difficult place to be because Ledecky is so, so far ahead

:16:48. > :16:50.of the rest of the field. Her times are incredible. Is it intimidating

:16:51. > :16:55.to be in there with Ledecky? No. She's already been up against her

:16:56. > :17:03.this week in the 400m and in that race, the great thing was that Jazz

:17:04. > :17:07.stuck to her own race plan. Ledecky will be so far ahead that

:17:08. > :17:11.hopefully she'll clock those girls. It's between those three for who

:17:12. > :17:22.gets silver and bronze. Can anybody... Kapas has beaten Jazz

:17:23. > :17:30.every time she's raced her this year. Will that play on her mind?

:17:31. > :17:34.Hopefully Jazz can get my British record tonight and post a huge time.

:17:35. > :17:38.She seemed confidence after the 400m and relaxed and that pleases you.

:17:39. > :17:43.Very much.So she was pleased to make the Olympics because of what

:17:44. > :17:46.happened last time. I think she's got more belief now. We all know

:17:47. > :17:53.she's good. She's great. She's posted the times but coming into the

:17:54. > :17:57.big meet is about deliveringy. Considering considering delivering

:17:58. > :18:07.it. Jazz Carlin is chasing a medal in the women's 800m freestyle.

:18:08. > :18:15.Adrian Moorhouse and Andy Jamieson. That was Lott Friis of Denmark.

:18:16. > :18:19.Leah Smith of the USA is in lane six, next to Boglarka Kapas of

:18:20. > :18:24.Hungary in lane five, the European champion. Here's Jazz Carlin. Well,

:18:25. > :18:28.she was Wales's sweetheart at the Commonwealth Games along with

:18:29. > :18:33.Georgia Davies. Won gold in the 800m freestyle but the silver medal on

:18:34. > :18:36.the 400m free has set her up for almost anything she wants - a

:18:37. > :19:05.British record, Beccy's British record. Wouldn't that be something.

:19:06. > :19:13.Talking of brilliance - here's Katie Ledecky. Ever since she won gold in

:19:14. > :19:19.2012, she is unbeaten on the international stage. The world

:19:20. > :19:33.record on the 400m, 800m and 1,500m, a World Championship event. That's

:19:34. > :19:38.not in the Olympics. She's enormously confident and if

:19:39. > :19:42.she wirches this, she'll be the first swimmer ever to successfully

:19:43. > :19:46.defend an Olympic title as a teenager, still only 19. Jazz Carlin

:19:47. > :19:50.of Great Britain is in three, three from the top of the shot, with that

:19:51. > :19:57.red hat that's already won her silver medal in the 400m free. Could

:19:58. > :20:08.she get another medal? Silver would be brilliant.

:20:09. > :20:11.Ledecky's coach says she swims as if it's a matter of rent and food.

:20:12. > :20:15.She's got a Fourie inside her. You've got to pay the rent and

:20:16. > :20:22.you've certainly got to eat... The final of the 800m freestyle for

:20:23. > :20:26.women in the Olympic Games and a very good start from Katie Ledecky

:20:27. > :20:35.and, well, from the gun, from the go, she's off. And I think that may

:20:36. > :20:38.well be the last time that we see Katie Ledecky, she's off and she

:20:39. > :20:40.looks really good already, Ade. She's comfortable and really making

:20:41. > :20:44.a confident move from the start. Absolutely. I think she's going for

:20:45. > :20:48.the world record, Andy. We'll talk about the splits because it's a

:20:49. > :20:52.longest race, eight minutes or so. Jazz Carlin in second place. First

:20:53. > :20:56.of all, let's talk about the lane draw because I think for Jazz it's

:20:57. > :21:00.interesting. She's left of Ledecky so one, two, three from your top of

:21:01. > :21:05.the picture now. But down below Ledecky this side you've got Kapas

:21:06. > :21:10.in five, European champion, Leah Smith is strong and Ashwood is

:21:11. > :21:14.strong in seven so I was a bit wary that Jazz Carlin might get stuck on

:21:15. > :21:20.that side with Ledecky going fast. She's got Lotte Friis, if you like,

:21:21. > :21:27.coming to the end of her career in two. Karl Karl is doing well.

:21:28. > :21:35.Carlin is doing well. -- Carlin is doing well.

:21:36. > :21:40.She's slotted into metronomic 61.3, 61.4, 61.4 and she repeated that.

:21:41. > :21:45.Her pacing on the first 100m is stronger and I like that, having

:21:46. > :21:48.talked about the position of the lanes, is that the race above

:21:49. > :22:12.Ledecky for second seems to be at the top of the pool, which is

:22:13. > :22:18.brilliant. If Jazz can keep this time, she'll

:22:19. > :22:24.win silver. Katie Ledecky is going to win gold. Ledecky is is 0.78 of a

:22:25. > :22:29.second below her own world record pace.

:22:30. > :22:36.Carlin is second. Belmonte normally goes out slowly and picks it up in

:22:37. > :22:40.the sected half. It's a different tactic from Belmonte. She's a bit of

:22:41. > :22:45.a threat. She had the last year off with an injury and has come back

:22:46. > :22:49.strongly here winning the 200m but three. She's the first Spanish woman

:22:50. > :22:51.to get a gold in the Commonwealth Games. She's no stranger to the

:22:52. > :23:00.podium. I think that will be the battle.

:23:01. > :23:04.Leah Smith... Well, she's up past Kapas, the European chafrpion. We'll

:23:05. > :23:09.check Ledecky's splits -- champion, but I wouldn't be surprised if

:23:10. > :23:13.Ledecky gets down to 8.4, you know. She'll blow this out of the water, I

:23:14. > :23:19.think. Ledecky leading by just about ten metres or so after 300m, five

:23:20. > :23:25.still to G that's ten lengths still to go at this turn. Ledecky over

:23:26. > :23:28.first. Jazz Carlin just outside of Ledecky's British-record pace at the

:23:29. > :23:32.moment. Going well. Starting to pick up the pace is Kapas of Hungary in

:23:33. > :23:39.the centre. Kapas in five. Belmonte in seven -

:23:40. > :23:42.excuse me, in eight - but look how smoothly and comfortably she's doing

:23:43. > :23:48.it. She's almost a body length ahead of her own world-record pace. It's

:23:49. > :23:53.interesting because she went nearly 0.75 seconds faster on the first

:23:54. > :23:58.100m. She's now slotted into pretty much 61.4s, 61.3. Actually, 61 flat

:23:59. > :24:03.there. So she's really dropping this down beyond where she was before. So

:24:04. > :24:06.every single 100m is eating away at the record and I know that's - I

:24:07. > :24:10.think she's going to knock a good 2.5 or 3 seconds off the world

:24:11. > :24:15.record. Right now when the camera shot comes out wide, you'll see Jazz

:24:16. > :24:19.Carlin, red cap, three from the top, for a three-way tie now for the

:24:20. > :24:25.silver and bronze. There's only two medals to be given out. Carlin and

:24:26. > :24:32.then you've got Kapas and at the bottom, Belmonte. That was the

:24:33. > :24:36.halfway turn in the final of the women's 2,800m free -- 800m

:24:37. > :24:40.freestyle. Katie Ledecky from the gun and at the halfway turn she's

:24:41. > :24:45.about 15m ahead but the great news for Britain is that Jazz Carlin is

:24:46. > :24:50.in second place, just holding off the European champion, Boglarka

:24:51. > :24:54.Kapas of Hungary, with the white hat, in the chasing group. At the

:24:55. > :24:56.bottom, we can't see it but Mireia Belmonte is close in fourth at the

:24:57. > :25:02.moment. It's fascinating. There are two

:25:03. > :25:05.stories at this race. One story of one of the best women swimmers in

:25:06. > :25:08.the world right now. You're watching a female Michael Phelps in the

:25:09. > :25:13.making I think. She's phenomenal. To be chasing four gold medals in her

:25:14. > :25:17.second Olympics at the age of 19 is just amazing and she's blowing this

:25:18. > :25:21.field away. She's going to blow the world record away. This second story

:25:22. > :25:28.is who is going to get the second medal. We've got Jazz Carlin,

:25:29. > :25:34.Bograrka Kapas and I think Belmonte maybe being dropped at the bottom

:25:35. > :25:39.there. Not by much, Ade. Ledecky is way out there. Kapas is starting to

:25:40. > :25:43.just take a small lead over Carlin. They this is how she swims. She goes

:25:44. > :25:50.out comfortably and then starts winding it up and that was the 500m

:25:51. > :25:54.turn. At this turn coming up, 250m to go, five lengths left, Ledecky

:25:55. > :25:57.leading by a good, good long way and still a full - over a full body

:25:58. > :26:02.length ahead of her own world record. Second, just, is Kapas of

:26:03. > :26:07.Hungary and three fints of a second behind her is Jazz Carlin of Great

:26:08. > :26:10.Britain, but they still haven't quite dropped Belmonte, Mireia

:26:11. > :26:15.Belmonte, of Spain. Katie Ledecky has dropped everybody,

:26:16. > :26:19.Andy and that's a great shot there. The empty pool of Katie Ledecky.

:26:20. > :26:23.She's faced this many times. It will be a solo effort for the world

:26:24. > :26:28.record. They've been having a train -- having her train with the men in

:26:29. > :26:31.training and Ryan Lochte says he sometimes can't keep up with her.

:26:32. > :26:35.Ryan Lochte, training with her in Colorado, has found it difficult.

:26:36. > :26:39.The men get out of the session and she keeps on going and going and

:26:40. > :26:44.going. She's not extending the lead over the world record. She's one

:26:45. > :26:48.body length ahead now. Just one body length ahead of the world record is

:26:49. > :26:53.not too bad and at this turn, three lengths to go in the final ever the

:26:54. > :26:56.women's 800m freestyle, three lengths left, Ledecky over first,

:26:57. > :27:00.Jazz Carlin picking up the pace again and that is good news. She was

:27:01. > :27:09.three-tenths behind at each of the last two turns and she's now right

:27:10. > :27:16.on it. Oh, goodness me, 0.03 seconds behind Boglarka Kapsa in the second

:27:17. > :27:20.medal. Gold, no doubt about that, Adrian, with 100m to go. But it's

:27:21. > :27:24.going to be a great scrap for silver and bronze.

:27:25. > :27:29.Absolutely. Ledecky now into the bell. Now for Katie Ledecky,

:27:30. > :27:34.dominant this this race. Look at the race for the silver medal. It's down

:27:35. > :27:45.to a sprint. Can Jazz Carlin get back to Kapas? Kapas has taken a

:27:46. > :27:51.lead there. Jazz Carlin needs to stay with her. She's got decent

:27:52. > :27:57.speed. Boglarka Kapas was fourth on the 400m. Jazz made a move. Great

:27:58. > :28:00.news for Great Britain. Katie Ledecky negotiation doubt about the

:28:01. > :28:03.champion. She's absolutely streets ahead.

:28:04. > :28:08.Here we go. Jazz Carlin going over now half a second ahead of the

:28:09. > :28:12.silver medal. So Carlin sprinting down for the back end. Katie

:28:13. > :28:16.Ledecky, though, one of the greatest women swimmers I've ever seen. It

:28:17. > :28:20.will be a massive new world record for Katie Ledecky. It's her own

:28:21. > :28:26.world record. She's set 12 world records since she won in London

:28:27. > :28:31.12012 and there it is, goodness me. 8:04.7, gold to Katie Ledecky of the

:28:32. > :28:37.USA, a massive world record and brilliant news for Great Britain,

:28:38. > :28:42.silver for Jazz Carlin! Yes, it is! Very close indeed and she wins the

:28:43. > :28:47.silver. Bronze to Kapas of Hungary. That's great news for Britain. Two

:28:48. > :28:52.silvers, Jazz Carlin, well done! Well, we couldn't have asked for

:28:53. > :28:55.#34er from Jazz there. I think Katie Ledecky gave everything, emptied her

:28:56. > :28:59.tank right at the end and you can see her sprinting in the last five

:29:00. > :29:03.metres. What a thank you to the crowd for supporting her, for

:29:04. > :29:07.cheering her on. And as you said, Andy, the first teenager to defend a

:29:08. > :29:12.title at the Olympic Games. Jazz Carlin did everything. And I'm so

:29:13. > :29:17.pleased for her. Two silver medals against the great Katie Ledecky. You

:29:18. > :29:21.have to be so pleased and proud with those results, absolutely. Well,

:29:22. > :29:26.it's absolutely outstanding for Jazz Carlin, it really is.

:29:27. > :29:30.But let's just focus, just for a moment, on Katie Ledecky.

:29:31. > :29:33.Gold on the 200m free. Gold on the 400m freestyle and a new world

:29:34. > :29:37.record, smashed her own world record there and she's done exactly the

:29:38. > :29:44.same again on this 800m freestyle. Also won the gold in the women's 4 x

:29:45. > :29:50.200m too for the USA and she's added silver in the 4 x 100m relay as

:29:51. > :29:54.well. Four golds and a silver, what a meet she's had. There's only four

:29:55. > :29:58.American women ever done that - sorry, two American women previous

:29:59. > :30:03.to her. Amy Van Dyken in the ninalt 96 Olympics in Atlanta and Missy

:30:04. > :30:06.Franklin, of course, in 2012 and Katie Ledecky joins the ranks, for

:30:07. > :30:11.me, of one of the greatest swimmers ever seen and I imagine a couple

:30:12. > :30:16.more Games, Andy. That has to put Jazz Carlin up there as one of the

:30:17. > :30:19.most skefrl British women as well behind Beccy. So gold, new world

:30:20. > :30:24.record as expected but the time was enormous. 8:04.7 and she's getting

:30:25. > :30:29.closer and closer to that eight-minute barrier. Katie Ledecky,

:30:30. > :30:36.her fourth gold, a brilliant second silver for Jazz Carlin of Great

:30:37. > :30:40.Britain. Kapas wins bronze. My hands are actually hurting I was

:30:41. > :30:44.clapping so hard then. We've witnessed something very special.

:30:45. > :30:50.Katie Ledecky, 19 years old. Put that time into context. I'm blown

:30:51. > :30:56.away. Think she's Dane Bowers... Another level! Another level. I saw

:30:57. > :31:00.Beccy in Beijing and I was gobsmacked when she broke the world

:31:01. > :31:04.record and that was 10 seconds faster than Beccy. I'm blown away.

:31:05. > :31:10.She was 12 seconds ahead of anyone else in the field. I did this Jazz

:31:11. > :31:14.and Kapas would go a little quicker than they did but who cares? Jazz

:31:15. > :31:18.got a silver medal. I'm so, so pleased for her. How difficult was

:31:19. > :31:21.it for Jazz because she couldn't see where the others were in the race in

:31:22. > :31:25.that position. Is it difficult? It is. But she wouldn't have know --

:31:26. > :31:29.would have known Belmonte would be it. She did the same thing to me in

:31:30. > :31:33.London and crept up on me. Jazz would have been aware of that going

:31:34. > :31:37.in. She knew it would be split like that but for Katie, that was just

:31:38. > :31:40.incredible and I... I genuinely believe this woman can go under

:31:41. > :31:44.eight minutes. I genuinely do. I know it didn't happen tonight but I

:31:45. > :31:48.do believe that. That was talked a lot about coming into this, you

:31:49. > :31:52.know. Do you think you can get close to eight. Close to the elusive eight

:31:53. > :31:58.minutes? And she sort of giggled but she's 19. I know. I just think

:31:59. > :32:02.it's... I mean ultimately, I suppose the thing is that she's completely

:32:03. > :32:05.raised the bar but ultimately, I suppose, for her, and where does

:32:06. > :32:09.that motivation come from? It's her best time and her motivation is

:32:10. > :32:14.every time she gets in the pool or trains, she wants to better her best

:32:15. > :32:17.time, ultimately. She's so good she has to train with the men. She

:32:18. > :32:20.trains with Ryan Lochte because there's no-one else to push her.

:32:21. > :32:23.That's the thing that's missing. No-one else has moved it on with her

:32:24. > :32:28.and that's the difficult thing. Katie has moved it on so much

:32:29. > :32:32.no-one's kind of chasing her back up and I think that's where Jazz needs

:32:33. > :32:36.to step up and some of the other girls do. Somebody who was chasing

:32:37. > :32:40.her tonight is Jazz Carlin, our silver medallist, and she's with

:32:41. > :32:48.shar Ron now. Where are your family? Up there? --

:32:49. > :32:52.Sharron now. Where are your family? Up there. It's so importantly that

:32:53. > :32:56.they're there because they're such a big support. Definitely. All those

:32:57. > :33:00.early mornings driving me to training when I was moody and didn't

:33:01. > :33:03.want to go training. You're moody? I mean at five o'clock in the morning,

:33:04. > :33:07.it's hard to be upbeat and happy. You know what? They've been in there

:33:08. > :33:12.from the start doing the tough times and the hard times and it's nice

:33:13. > :33:16.they can finally be here and to come away with two silver medals is an

:33:17. > :33:20.incredible feeling. We were chatting before and you were saying you can't

:33:21. > :33:23.believe it, two silver medals. It's been a tough road. Four years ago,

:33:24. > :33:29.it was really difficult. How much changes have you had to go through?

:33:30. > :33:34.How difficult has it been? Your lovely boyfriend Lewis lost his mum

:33:35. > :33:39.this year as well. It's been tough. Obviously, I relocated to the bault

:33:40. > :33:42.programme two years ago nearly so I've had to change coaches and

:33:43. > :33:46.change where I love for the Bath programme. I've got an amazing coach

:33:47. > :33:50.and support staff at Bath. Finally believing in myself. I've been work

:33:51. > :33:53.being a sports psychologist to stick with my race plan and be confident

:33:54. > :33:57.and working on those sides of things as well, not just the physical side.

:33:58. > :34:00.It's amazing racing with these girls because even though we race against

:34:01. > :34:04.each other, I'm great friends with a lot of those girls so it's nice to

:34:05. > :34:08.race against each other at the top. Did you know it was basically a

:34:09. > :34:13.three-horse race for the silver medal. Could you see them? Yeah, I

:34:14. > :34:17.mean. I've got great goggles so I could see around. I could see Katie

:34:18. > :34:21.was far ahead. I've been feeling a bit rough for a couple of days so I

:34:22. > :34:23.thought I'd just go out there and to come away with a silver is

:34:24. > :34:27.incredible. What happens now? Are you having a nice break? I don't

:34:28. > :34:30.even know. I haven't even thought about it. I need to go on holiday

:34:31. > :34:34.somewhere. I need to hopefully go away with my mum and dad to chill

:34:35. > :34:39.out with them and see them, sort of, relax with me because they get a bit

:34:40. > :34:44.stressed watching poolside. And painting a new house. I know! I've

:34:45. > :34:47.got a lot of work to do. I'm slowly getting there. I'm more of a Project

:34:48. > :34:51.Manager rather than the person who is actually doing it. Ah, I see! I

:34:52. > :34:55.like watching people do it. But yeah, on to the new things and I'll

:34:56. > :35:00.have some time away from the pool and see what's next really.

:35:01. > :35:04.Fantastic. Well done, darling. Oh, thank you.

:35:05. > :35:11.We talk so often about swimmers and their four-year plan and how, you

:35:12. > :35:14.know, that's what they're working towards. For Jazz, things have been

:35:15. > :35:18.up and down. She missed the home Olympics because of illness, big

:35:19. > :35:21.changes with the coach. So how impressive is what she's done over

:35:22. > :35:25.this Olympics? I think coming into this she kind of had a funny Olympic

:35:26. > :35:31.trials, where she didn't actually swim her best that she can do in the

:35:32. > :35:36.800m and her 400m was so much better. So to come back to two

:35:37. > :35:39.silver medals at Olympic Games is just fantastic. I think she'll be

:35:40. > :35:44.over with the moon with this week and it's amazing she's put it right.

:35:45. > :35:48.She's fallen fourth a few times. She missed out on London but she's

:35:49. > :35:52.written it off and gone does it matter. This is the medal ceremony

:35:53. > :35:56.for the women's 200m backstroke. There was a big shock in this one

:35:57. > :36:03.because we all expected to see Katinka Hosszu on the top of the

:36:04. > :36:07.podium. She is of course in silver medal

:36:08. > :36:17.position but it wasn't how we expected it to be. A lot of punters

:36:18. > :36:20.will be unhappy. After we saw her in the first race, winning the

:36:21. > :36:24.backstroke in the IM by a margin, people thought she had the speed and

:36:25. > :36:30.the endurance. Everyone thought she'd win it. She thought she'd win

:36:31. > :36:38.it but the iron lady got beaten tonight. She's built this image as

:36:39. > :36:44.the iron lady. Chinese TV called her the iron lady and she's played up to

:36:45. > :36:49.it. I've been to swimming meets where you can buy hats with

:36:50. > :36:54.#ironlady on, she makes the most of it and rightly so. We talked a lot

:36:55. > :37:00.about her and her coach and her husband and it was actually really

:37:01. > :37:04.sweet. He cheered. He smiled. She walked over to him after and they

:37:05. > :37:08.had a big hug, smiled and congratulated each other. It was

:37:09. > :37:11.nice to see. Because we've talked a lot about their dynamic and how

:37:12. > :37:16.passionate he gets when she's racing and it was so nice they celebrated

:37:17. > :37:22.the silver medal just as if it was a gold medal. She said the interesting

:37:23. > :37:26.thing is she trains in America and she said they dream in rainbows and

:37:27. > :37:34.in Hungary they dream in black and white. Listen to the crowd! Huge

:37:35. > :37:39.congratulations for the American swimmer. A lot of Americans are in

:37:40. > :37:44.here tonight and they may forgive us for saying that a lot of Americans

:37:45. > :37:47.in here tonight didn't necessarily come to cheer her on but they're

:37:48. > :37:53.very, very proud nonetheless. A lot of people are out here for Phelps of

:37:54. > :37:59.course. It's her fourth medal of the week. She's certainly having a good

:38:00. > :38:03.Olympics games. That's her third individual medal. She's gone bronze,

:38:04. > :38:24.silver and now a gold one. The whole set. She can go home now!

:38:25. > :39:31.AMERICAN NATIONAL ANTHEM PLAYS

:39:32. > :39:39.CHEERING Huge emotion and what a wonderful

:39:40. > :39:45.smile of the new Olympic Champion in the women's 200m backstroke. It's

:39:46. > :39:50.Dirado of the USA with silver to Hosszu of Hungary and the bronze to

:39:51. > :39:58.Caldwell of Canada. Emotional scenes there. Naya Dirado

:39:59. > :40:02.taking gold in the women's 200m backstroke, Katinka Hosszu of

:40:03. > :40:06.Hungary in silver medal position and Hilary Caldwell of Canada in bronze.

:40:07. > :40:10.Mark Foster, we were quite impressed with Naya there. She's one of the

:40:11. > :40:15.only Americans to sing the anthem. It's one of the things we noticed

:40:16. > :40:21.the other night. I went... Michael Phelps has won 22 gold medals and

:40:22. > :40:25.I've not seen him sing the National Anthem once. You'd think he'd know

:40:26. > :40:30.it once. You'd think, "I know I'm going to be there so I'll sing it."

:40:31. > :40:35.It was lovely to see the tear in her eye and these will the enotional

:40:36. > :40:37.scenes, where the... This is where Beccy Adlington and I lose it

:40:38. > :40:41.because we're proud parents and we love it when these young men and

:40:42. > :40:46.young women make the way up to their families for the emotional scenes.

:40:47. > :40:53.We heard Jazz Carlin saying to Sharron... Dirado just got a massive

:40:54. > :40:57.kiss off her boyfriend! We heard Jazz Carlin say how, as a swimmer,

:40:58. > :41:01.you rely on your parents so, so much. You cannot go to the early

:41:02. > :41:07.training sessions by yourself. You can't drive a car at 5:30 in the

:41:08. > :41:12.morning when you're 13 - or at any time of the day when you're 13. You

:41:13. > :41:15.do rely on them so much at the early ages and that's where your

:41:16. > :41:20.foundations are born and that's where your dreams start and without

:41:21. > :41:24.that support network... My sister, you know, had to give up an awful

:41:25. > :41:27.lot because mum was taking me to training and competitions at the

:41:28. > :41:31.weekend. It's not just your parents. It's everybody in the family. It

:41:32. > :41:36.revolves around you. I think we have to mention Hilary

:41:37. > :41:40.here. Canada have had a fantastic Olympic Games this time around.

:41:41. > :41:46.They've done absolutely incredibly. We saw Penny last night in the 100m

:41:47. > :41:49.last night in the freestyle. They've got six gold medals in this

:41:50. > :41:54.championships, which is incredible for Canada. Impressive three ladies

:41:55. > :41:59.there. As Mark Foster would say, the Canadian women have travelled well.

:42:00. > :42:03.They've turned up! It's been a huge transformation from where they were

:42:04. > :42:08.two years ago, four years ago. It shows when you get the right

:42:09. > :42:11.system in place and the right structure - I know a couple of

:42:12. > :42:15.British athletes have done that. It's down to them but theefl clearly

:42:16. > :42:21.looked at it and thought it was falling apart. In the mid-'80s and

:42:22. > :42:25.'90s they had a strong swimming team and now they've got a good system.

:42:26. > :42:29.It takes a long time to build it sometimes. I suspect this will win

:42:30. > :42:33.Katinka Hosszu even more fans because she's been so, so dominant.

:42:34. > :42:37.She's been so far out there that it's almost like she's superhuman,

:42:38. > :42:41.you know. What could she do wrong? This proves she is human. She does

:42:42. > :42:45.lose. She has dealt with an extraordinary amount of pressure.

:42:46. > :42:48.There's a lot of expectation on her shoulders. Everyone is staring at

:42:49. > :42:52.her and her coach, all eyes are on them. And that must be very, very

:42:53. > :42:56.intense and very serious and it's nice to see that she's happy from

:42:57. > :43:01.that result. The other day, after the 200 m medley where Siobhan

:43:02. > :43:05.rivalled her, it was like... It was a massive celebration so it's nice

:43:06. > :43:10.to see her celebrate and enjoy it tonight. Proving that she's so

:43:11. > :43:15.dominant is referring to silver as a loss. It's very impressive. You're

:43:16. > :43:19.like Piers Morgan! Let's talk about the men's 50m freestyle because Ben

:43:20. > :43:23.Proud is going in that one for Britain. Ben Proud - you've had a

:43:24. > :43:28.lot to do with Mark Foster. How do you rate his chances? I rate them. I

:43:29. > :43:34.think it's going to be clearly every final is a tough final. It's the

:43:35. > :43:36.Olympic Games. Manadou who won the worlds and is reigning Olympic

:43:37. > :43:40.Champion is probably half a head ahead of everybody else so I think

:43:41. > :43:45.from that point of view, I'm going to... Manadou will go down in my

:43:46. > :43:52.eyes as favourite for the race and he'll probably be a fingernail

:43:53. > :43:56.ahead. But between Ben, Irvine and Govarov, between two and six,

:43:57. > :44:01.there's 0.08 seconds between second and fifth. When it comes down to the

:44:02. > :44:05.final, you've got to react properly, get into the water properly, service

:44:06. > :44:10.properly, get into your stroke and don't Peter Reith from the start to

:44:11. > :44:14.the finish, 32 strokes and when they finish - I always remember thinking

:44:15. > :44:18.in the finish to hurtier hand. A lot of people finish like this and

:44:19. > :44:23.that's a bit close to the wall. Our end up - I hurt my fingers a lot. It

:44:24. > :44:27.never fails to amaze me that they don't take a single breath. The

:44:28. > :44:32.level of fitness... It's not long. Not for some people. It's 21

:44:33. > :44:35.seconds, right. The scary thing when Pembroke the British record he came

:44:36. > :44:41.out and said, "My start wasn't great." And we thought it was

:44:42. > :44:44.fantastic. It will be amazing if he gets the little things right. You

:44:45. > :44:48.talk a lot about it having to be a perfect race. If he does that and

:44:49. > :44:52.breaks the British record again, he could be the medals. I know - we've

:44:53. > :44:56.said it and I know you two love it when I say this - but if people try

:44:57. > :44:59.a little bit too hard and they snatch the water, they basically

:45:00. > :45:04.snatch it and miss it, they don't grab it and in the swimming pool, we

:45:05. > :45:08.sort of hold the water and you feel it and if you try sometimes too

:45:09. > :45:12.hard, you slip it. We practise and practise to hold it. If people start

:45:13. > :45:16.slipping the water, they don't hold it, so they start of -- sort of slip

:45:17. > :45:18.and spin on the wheels. Will nerves affect it? Definitely.

:45:19. > :45:43.Every time he stands up, he delivers. He should be, with Florent

:45:44. > :45:52.Manaudou, they have the best starts. This place could go mad. Watch the

:45:53. > :46:00.wash, the splash, how much of a wave they create. It is a field of

:46:01. > :46:07.phenomenal athlete and we are about to find out who's the fastest man on

:46:08. > :46:13.the planet in the pool is. COMMENTATOR: Quite difficult to see

:46:14. > :46:21.past the fastest qualifier, they provide, world, European champion,

:46:22. > :46:38.the French swimmer. Does not have the world record. It is difficult.

:46:39. > :46:57.Massive ovation. My word. My goodness me. If that does not send

:46:58. > :47:02.the shivers up your spine. Brilliant to see a British swimmer in the

:47:03. > :47:16.final, these fastest. He could get a medal. Absolutely. This morning he

:47:17. > :47:25.had a perfect dive, the first 10- 50 metres -- 15 metres it was

:47:26. > :47:32.brilliant. If this man does it, wouldn't it be fantastic? Anthony

:47:33. > :47:41.Ervin. He wanted the gold in the Sydney Olympics in the year 2000 he

:47:42. > :47:55.did an eight Yusof and has made the final, third fastest. He says to new

:47:56. > :48:06.Ukrainian records. The defending Olympic champion, Florent Manaudou.

:48:07. > :48:18.He likes to go faster from the heat to the semi-, to the final. He won

:48:19. > :48:24.in 2012. Being in lane four, it is a good place to be. What about the

:48:25. > :48:36.nation's last chance to get medals. Front had a fantastic 2012 but here,

:48:37. > :48:42.he is the best and only shine? They go silver in the relay and a lot of

:48:43. > :48:52.it was down to him. This is also Brazil, I think's last chance of a

:48:53. > :49:09.medal. Bruno Fratus. He certainly could medal but then so could Adrian

:49:10. > :49:17.and Andriy Govorov. It is so tide. The crowd chanting for Bruno Fratus

:49:18. > :49:25.stop we need complete silence, these guys are twitchy at the start.

:49:26. > :49:37.The fastest human beings in water, the final of the men's 50 metres

:49:38. > :49:46.freestyle. For the title of Olympic champion. Florent Manaudou, the

:49:47. > :49:57.fastest will fire in four. From Britain, Benjamin Proud in lane two.

:49:58. > :50:06.The fastest starter in the heat and SME has been of age and proud. But a

:50:07. > :50:16.really good start is the South African, Brad Candy. Can Anthony

:50:17. > :50:29.Ervin get the gold medal? Yes he can. Anthony Ervin has won the gold.

:50:30. > :50:38.The silver to Florent Manaudou the bronze to Nathan Adrian. What a

:50:39. > :50:51.race, Anthony Ervin! 35 years of age and the oldest Olympian to win this

:50:52. > :50:58.event. What a story! That was unbelievable. A twitch in the bottom

:50:59. > :51:05.from lane eight. A good start. Anthony Ervin, look at this. I am

:51:06. > :51:09.glad you are calling this race because I could not see what on

:51:10. > :51:16.earth was happening. You flagged him early. Look at this, I hope we see

:51:17. > :51:26.the celebrations because he goes and punches the water and nearly hits

:51:27. > :51:40.Florent Manaudou next to him. Sydney 2000 gold medal, 50 freestyle, Rio

:51:41. > :51:49.2016, gold medal, 50 freestyle. Regaining his title 16 years after

:51:50. > :51:58.he won it last. Benjamin Proud must be enormously proud with fourth.

:51:59. > :52:07.STUDIO: 35 years old and back on the top of the podium, there is every

:52:08. > :52:11.chance to make a comeback! I in shock. It has been such an amazing

:52:12. > :52:17.night. Even you did not call that one. Florent Manaudou has been

:52:18. > :52:27.dominating, for the last few years, he is an absolute specimen but I am

:52:28. > :52:33.really pleased for Anthony Ervin. He had a really hard time finding

:52:34. > :52:41.himself, he went off and did cross biking, tried to commit suicide,

:52:42. > :52:55.joined a band, really interesting stuff. Kill natural ability. Ben did

:52:56. > :53:01.a wonderful job, a tiny bit average, his 21, the youngest in that crowd.

:53:02. > :53:16.Benjamin Proud is with Sharon. You must be pleased, a great swim,

:53:17. > :53:23.three great times. Just missing all the time though. We are up against

:53:24. > :53:32.the toughest competition in the world. I chart with that. It was an

:53:33. > :53:40.awesome but, I mean, to be honest, to be honest seeing Anthony when it

:53:41. > :53:44.gave me goosebumps. Think of all the years you have in front of you. You

:53:45. > :53:52.are loving your sport and getting better every time you get in? It is

:53:53. > :53:58.a long time to work for the next one but my start has been good, I feel

:53:59. > :54:07.really motivated. In the next couple of years I will focus on the fifth

:54:08. > :54:16.E. -- 50. We will see what happens in the future. Fran is still

:54:17. > :54:25.improving and she has done really well. Well done to you. I shall we

:54:26. > :54:33.will see you at the worlds next year and at the Commonwealth Games a

:54:34. > :54:40.couple after that. STUDIO: The fastest man in the pool. Lane

:54:41. > :54:51.towards up with Florent Manaudou, that was a bend. A fast turn full

:54:52. > :54:59.Anthony Ervin. Hundreds of a second, you cannot spare. Am pleased that

:55:00. > :55:11.Anthony Ervin didn't win it, apart from Ben. -- did win it. After

:55:12. > :55:22.winning the Olympics 16 years ago, he got it right at the time. As good

:55:23. > :55:31.as Michael Phelps -- is, he is not the fastest man on the planet.

:55:32. > :55:39.Hugely motivational. We keep talking about age and strength. Look at the

:55:40. > :55:45.leap! Everything you do, in any event, it has to be specific to what

:55:46. > :55:52.you do. Everybody is taking on a straight arm tech and it, because it

:55:53. > :55:57.the arm comes straight over, it catches it straightaway. The event

:55:58. > :56:04.is getting faster and faster but also tighter and tighter. A

:56:05. > :56:13.fascinating night in the pool. We have had surprises, celebrations,

:56:14. > :56:17.Jazz Carlin did take a silver and we will enjoy her medals are remaining

:56:18. > :56:20.a little bit later on. The semifinals of the women's 50 metres

:56:21. > :56:31.freestyle coming up. Before I take you back to go before

:56:32. > :56:39.some athletics. Let me show you what is happening at Rouen. The Brazilian

:56:40. > :56:45.public demanding medals. -- happening at Belo Horizonte. At half

:56:46. > :56:52.time it is godless but it has been a fantastic game. If you want a bit of

:56:53. > :56:55.football, because let's face it, the Premier League is starting in a

:56:56. > :57:01.couple of hours that time so you might want to get into the mood.

:57:02. > :57:05.Brazil versus Australia at Belo Horizonte. Now we take you back to

:57:06. > :57:16.go before athletics. When he left, there was drama,

:57:17. > :57:22.Rutherford had had to no jumps in the qualifying. It was filled with

:57:23. > :57:29.jeopardy. If he wants to stay in these Olympic Games and go for glory

:57:30. > :57:36.again, he had to post a distance in his third jump to qualify him

:57:37. > :57:44.through to tomorrow's final. We watched his third jump.

:57:45. > :57:59.COMMENTATOR: Movement is he is. In terms of what he needs at the moment

:58:00. > :58:13.is something around 7.85. The Czech republic in 12th place. Round three.

:58:14. > :58:22.Well, I think it is a valid jump. It is. The white flag is raised. It

:58:23. > :58:34.looks around 7.90. This will be close. Just miss timing that ever so

:58:35. > :58:42.slightly. 11 centimetres to spare so very good awareness, as you would

:58:43. > :58:50.expect. Well, hearts in our mouths. He is in 10th place, that should be

:58:51. > :58:57.enough. Two consecutive pools of 16 athletes. Let's have a look. We have

:58:58. > :59:06.a few athletes capable of pushing him the rankings. He is in 10th

:59:07. > :59:15.place but we need no more than one or to Macs. Only 12 will progress

:59:16. > :59:22.for tomorrow's final. Talk about doing it by the skin of your teeth.

:59:23. > :59:32.Great Rutherford was asked a few questions. LAUGHTER You gave us a

:59:33. > :59:37.few palpitations. I think I need to apologise to my mum and dad at home.

:59:38. > :59:43.Qualifications can go either way. They come be fantastic all be a

:59:44. > :59:52.nightmare like it was today. I was fighting it slightly. Today, I

:59:53. > :59:56.struggled in the first two. In the last one, I knew I had to get a half

:59:57. > :00:02.decent one. I took a lot of confidence from the first two. I

:00:03. > :00:11.knew I was in a good place to jump and as long as I was conservative I

:00:12. > :00:18.could get through and I and that his domain thing. There is always a lot

:00:19. > :00:23.of pressure. I did that to myself in my first Olympics. I now have the

:00:24. > :00:29.experience to come back from that. I have been in this environment many

:00:30. > :00:35.times and I generally fairly good at getting through. I took a very, very

:00:36. > :00:41.safe approach. Tomorrow will be a very different game. I know where to

:00:42. > :00:45.start from the runway properly and I will be getting hopefully the first

:00:46. > :00:52.couple in an we might see something good tomorrow. Another Super

:00:53. > :01:00.Saturday? That would be lovely. To see how Jess has done... It should

:01:01. > :01:06.be a special evening. I feel really happy and I know I can really good

:01:07. > :01:10.shape so I am excited for tomorrow. Again, sorry, Mum and dad, I do

:01:11. > :01:24.apologise! He alluded to his experience and how

:01:25. > :01:29.he knows he can do it. He took positives from the second no-jump.

:01:30. > :01:33.Are you worried at all that he can't put that to bed tonight or, with his

:01:34. > :01:37.experience, does he start tomorrow fresh? I'm more confident hearing

:01:38. > :01:41.his interview. I was nervous for him. You see athletes mess up really

:01:42. > :01:44.badly on that third attempt after two fouls, you know. But his

:01:45. > :01:48.experience comes into play there. He didn't panic. He knew he felt good

:01:49. > :01:53.and he was running well. Greg always runs well. We don't normally see him

:01:54. > :01:58.make fouls like that and so, mentally, it sounds to me like he's

:01:59. > :02:02.in a good place. So that's - rest assured he'll iron out those

:02:03. > :02:06.problems. 10th out of 12th and nothing gets carried forward and

:02:07. > :02:11.it's a fresh competition tomorrow. He alloweded there as well to the

:02:12. > :02:16.heptathlon and what a Saturday it could be. Let's go and visit that

:02:17. > :02:20.fourth heat of the 200m. It was a really important race for Jess and

:02:21. > :02:26.Kat to put big points on the board to carry overnight to the second

:02:27. > :02:32.day. Five of the top six in the overall

:02:33. > :02:36.standings go in here. Only two women in this field have been below 23

:02:37. > :02:40.seconds and they are Jessica Ennis-Hill and Katarina

:02:41. > :02:43.Johnson-Thompson. Katarina Johnson-Thompson has done it this

:02:44. > :02:52.season, though. Jessica Ennis-Hill is down a little bit. Final of the

:02:53. > :02:57.200m in the heptathlon. Good start by Jessica Ennis-Hill,

:02:58. > :03:01.working well off Akela Jones outside her. Katarina Johnson-Thompson

:03:02. > :03:03.working nicely too. Look at the speed of Katarina Johnson-Thompson.

:03:04. > :03:07.She leads around the bend and Jessica Ennis-Hill is trying to get

:03:08. > :03:11.back. It is the two Britons coming away at the moment. Katarina

:03:12. > :03:16.Johnson-Thompson is chasing down the line, chasing down a time and the

:03:17. > :03:20.clock will stop at 23.27, some way outside her season's best, her

:03:21. > :03:23.personal best, Jessica Ennis-Hill coming through in -- through in

:03:24. > :03:27.second place but that reiterates it's not a flying track for the

:03:28. > :03:31.sprinters. Jessica Ennis-Hill will take the lead with that time. We'll

:03:32. > :03:35.confirm what it is and confirm her position but she will move ahead of

:03:36. > :03:39.Nafissatou Thiam back to the top of the board after the first day but

:03:40. > :03:43.it's not a flying track, perhaps not flying conditions or tired athletes

:03:44. > :03:46.out there. They were not necessarily the quickest times. Negotiation they

:03:47. > :03:51.weren't and the real speed merchants will be on the track shortly in the

:03:52. > :03:55.women's 100m qualifying but, yes, we've just seen Katarina there run

:03:56. > :03:59.disappointingly for herself, time-wise. Her race itself was run

:04:00. > :04:04.very well indeed. She's got this good rhythm. She's got a really nice

:04:05. > :04:08.groove about her running, Kat, really fluid. But Jess, she's really

:04:09. > :04:11.always telling us that she is the champion and hanging on to her

:04:12. > :04:15.title. She says if someone is going to take it from her, they're going

:04:16. > :04:20.to battle her to do that. She's always working hard towards that

:04:21. > :04:22.line and she will go to bed tonight feeling pretty confident that things

:04:23. > :04:34.are going her way. So a good run there from Kat. She

:04:35. > :04:36.didn't look super pleased with herself, did she, but perhaps she

:04:37. > :04:39.can't put the disappointment from the shot put behind her for the

:04:40. > :04:45.moment but Jessica Ennis-Hill will be happy. Let's hear from her. She

:04:46. > :04:49.spoke to Phil Jones. Well, mission accomplished from

:04:50. > :04:53.Jess. We're used to this from you. Top of the leaderboard going into

:04:54. > :04:58.day two. How would you assess the performance? It's been a mixed day.

:04:59. > :05:02.Really happy with my hurdles and so happy with my high jump because I've

:05:03. > :05:06.not jumped that kind of height for a few years now. Disappointed in my

:05:07. > :05:12.shot put, obviously. It's hard and frustrating and a little bit down on

:05:13. > :05:15.the 200m but generally pretty happy. This last race, one of your

:05:16. > :05:19.strongest events. Are you looking at the points situation going you want

:05:20. > :05:23.to be on top of the leaderboard and you know you can be. I'm trying to

:05:24. > :05:27.better what I've done, basically, and measure myself against what I've

:05:28. > :05:30.done so far this season and just put all the events together and seeing

:05:31. > :05:34.what I come out with in the end. You've been in this situation many

:05:35. > :05:37.times before and you've come through with a gold medal each and every

:05:38. > :05:41.time. What's in your mind-set that allows you to do that really? I'm

:05:42. > :05:45.not sure, to be honest. I think definitely experience. I've been in

:05:46. > :05:48.lots of championships and competitions like this. They're

:05:49. > :05:52.under my belt. But, yeah, it's always different. The emotions are

:05:53. > :05:57.always different. Physically it's so demanding. To go away, I'll rest up

:05:58. > :06:01.and hopefully come back strong tomorrow. Is it different because

:06:02. > :06:05.you're coming in as defending Olympic Champion? It just feels

:06:06. > :06:09.amazing, to be honest, to have those two titles and be here at my second

:06:10. > :06:13.Olympics is really special. I'm frying to ensure it. But it is very

:06:14. > :06:18.stressful. But, yeah -- enjoy it. But it is very stressful. We wish

:06:19. > :06:23.you well tour tomorrow. Thank you. Cheers! She should go to bed with a

:06:24. > :06:28.bigger smile on her face because she's back into top spot after that

:06:29. > :06:31.run in the 200m. Thiam, who has had a brilliant day with her field

:06:32. > :06:35.events in particular, her shot put and her high jump is in second

:06:36. > :06:39.place. Jones, who looks like she's got enormous potential in the

:06:40. > :06:42.heptathlon, had a really good high jump in third and Katarina

:06:43. > :06:48.Johnson-Thompson in fourth place tonight and she spoke to Phil Jones

:06:49. > :06:53.too. Kat, I've heard you day it's a day

:06:54. > :06:57.of mixed emotions. A fan tacit high jump, not so good shot put. How

:06:58. > :07:02.would you assess the day? You're bang in medal contention? I feel

:07:03. > :07:05.with the high jump I was in really good shape. I was in better shape

:07:06. > :07:10.for the 200m. I was really disappointed with that time. I'm

:07:11. > :07:14.used to being disappointed with the shot put so not so much but the

:07:15. > :07:18.200m, I'm a bit down at the minute. Tell me the emotions. You've cleared

:07:19. > :07:22.1.98, a new British record in the high jump. And at that point, what

:07:23. > :07:28.are you thinking you need to do - the shot put is not one of your

:07:29. > :07:33.strongest events. I wasn't expecting to push it up to 13m or anything. So

:07:34. > :07:39.just over 12m and try and stay consistent and not lose as much

:07:40. > :07:42.points as I did going into the two. It doesn't seem a particularly

:07:43. > :07:46.fast-track. They weren't exit rating times so the time was still a decent

:07:47. > :07:51.one. Does it give you any kind of impetus into day two? Not really. It

:07:52. > :07:56.was one of my strongest events. I really wanted to dip under 23. It's

:07:57. > :08:01.hard at this time of night and you've been out in the cold for no

:08:02. > :08:04.time but it's no excuse. Everybody's in the same boat. That's maybe why

:08:05. > :08:09.we're not running as fast as we can. Day two tomorrow. How will you sleep

:08:10. > :08:13.tonight? Very well. I'm knackered. And tomorrow, we saw what happened

:08:14. > :08:17.last year, you learned a lot, I know, from what happened last year.

:08:18. > :08:21.So you're going to go in with confidence? Yeah, I'm going to try

:08:22. > :08:24.and jump in the first round and go on from there. We wish you well for

:08:25. > :08:30.tomorrow. Thank you for that. Thanks. Thanks a lot, Kat. That was

:08:31. > :08:36.about 20 minutes ago. I hope she's asleep already because it's been a

:08:37. > :08:41.long, long day. They started at 9:30 with the hurdles and local time it's

:08:42. > :08:45.11.05. She's going to bed down with herself. She shouldn't. She's got to

:08:46. > :08:50.learn not to do that. Let's get back out because it's the women's heats

:08:51. > :09:06.for 100m and we're on heat five already.

:09:07. > :09:15.Ewa Swoboda won silver in the world juniors in Poland last month. She's

:09:16. > :09:24.in lane eight just inside Tianna Bartoletta.

:09:25. > :09:31.Two to go through automatically and Tianna Bartoletta. Swoboda leading

:09:32. > :09:35.at the moment, Bartoletta gets back. Good run by those two. Two to go

:09:36. > :09:39.through and it will be them. The camera focused on Swobod, a, who

:09:40. > :09:43.runs so well. What a talent she is. So, so quick out of the blocks. She

:09:44. > :09:48.always has been. She's just turned 19. I think that Bartoletta might

:09:49. > :09:55.just have got that. It's very closed. Anyway, they were the two to

:09:56. > :09:59.go through. Ewa Swoboda, yeah, second place, 11.24. She's smiling

:10:00. > :10:05.because she's safely through. We know she starts very, very quickly.

:10:06. > :10:08.Very good indoors, Swoboda. And Bartoletta had a bit of work to do

:10:09. > :10:15.here. Absolutely right. Does it look like somebody who has

:10:16. > :10:20.run 10.78 this year? Not at all. Swoboda put it out there to her.

:10:21. > :10:24.You would think somebody with a season's best of 10.78 would claw it

:10:25. > :10:27.back quickly but she was right to the line before she did anything.

:10:28. > :10:31.She's working hard, driving well, putting herself into a lovely

:10:32. > :10:36.upright position but now look at Swoboda, keeping her form, holding

:10:37. > :10:41.everything together, making sure if Bartoletta is going to come past

:10:42. > :10:47.her, she'll have to work to make the magic happen. Just about made it. It

:10:48. > :10:51.was a dip at the line. Question marks for Bartoletta. Things have

:10:52. > :10:55.pretty much gone according to plan and to form so far. Desiree Hendy

:10:56. > :11:04.with a good run. The two quickest times so far by a distance coming

:11:05. > :11:09.into the previous heat were Shelley Ann Fraser Price and Bartoletta and

:11:10. > :11:18.Swoboda are through automatically here. Let's go back to heat one,

:11:19. > :11:23.which included Desiree Henry. We have more to come. The 100m gets

:11:24. > :11:27.under way. It's late in the night here and very late in the night at

:11:28. > :11:30.home. Stay with us. You might be watching this in bed, which we

:11:31. > :11:33.positively encourage. A lot of people have televisions in the

:11:34. > :11:38.bedroom in this day and age. It's the modern world. I don't quite

:11:39. > :11:41.understand it myself but... It doesn't encourage good sleep

:11:42. > :11:45.patterns, watching electronic devices before a snooze.

:11:46. > :11:49.Rambling now. The first of eight heats f-of-in -- first of eight

:11:50. > :11:54.heats. We had some preliminaries this morning to just firm things up

:11:55. > :12:01.for the line -ups this evening. And in this first of eight, we have

:12:02. > :12:05.Murielle Hahoure who was very proud to carry the Fleadhing for the Ivory

:12:06. > :12:10.Coast in the Opening Ceremony. She ran 10.78 in Florida in June, which

:12:11. > :12:15.is the joint third quickest time in the world this year behind Alain

:12:16. > :12:30.Thompson and English Gardiner. World silver medallist in the 100m and

:12:31. > :12:34.200m in Moscow three years ago. Always a smile from her. There is

:12:35. > :12:40.Desiree Henry, Britain's fastest woman this year with an 11.06 in

:12:41. > :12:45.California in April. Three other runs below 11.10 but actually

:12:46. > :12:48.finished behind Asha Phillip and one other runner in the UK

:12:49. > :12:52.championships. I suppose the journey is complete now for Desiree Henry

:12:53. > :13:07.from lighting the flame four years ago to the start line here. There's

:13:08. > :13:21.Natalia Pohrebryak from Ukraine. So the line-up is Bazolo of Portugal in

:13:22. > :13:29.lane two, Wei Yongli of China, Alkhaldi from Bahrain, Seavula from

:13:30. > :13:34.Fiji. Desiree Henry is in lane eight and Pohrebnyak from Ukraine is in

:13:35. > :13:37.lane nine. Two go through automatically and eight fastest

:13:38. > :13:44.losers over the eight heats and Desiree Henry will be looking to

:13:45. > :13:46.keep pace with Murielle Ahoure here. First of the women's 100m

:13:47. > :13:57.first-round heats. And cleanly away and Desiree Henry

:13:58. > :14:01.left a little bit by Murielle Ahoure. Here comes Desiree Henry.

:14:02. > :14:07.Running quickly, running strongly. She comes through to take it 11.09!

:14:08. > :14:11.Well, we talked about it being perhaps not the quickest track but

:14:12. > :14:18.there's another sub-11.10 from Desiree Henry. Not overfazed by

:14:19. > :14:21.Murielle Ahoure. That was a mightily strong run from Desiree Henry.

:14:22. > :15:02.Congratulations, you are lighting up the track? ISIL my lineup and went

:15:03. > :15:10.out and executed, have fun, execute. --I saw. Enjoy your first Olympics

:15:11. > :15:18.is what my coach told me. Go out and have fun. Could you soak it up?

:15:19. > :15:25.Absolutely. Behind the scenes is lots of fun but once I on the track

:15:26. > :15:31.I focus, I do not want to throw all the hard work away. It has been

:15:32. > :15:35.going good. You are consistently running that kind of time. You are

:15:36. > :15:41.going to be in the mix tomorrow? Most definitely. Today's

:15:42. > :15:47.performances were terrific. The pressure is on tomorrow and the

:15:48. > :15:53.things could happen. And thank you everyone for staying up at home.

:15:54. > :15:59.Have a good night. Thank you, then. Her enthusiasm is infectious. One

:16:00. > :16:05.o'clock in the UK for the final tomorrow. We had a really good

:16:06. > :16:16.shotput final here this evening. Let's show you how it panned out.

:16:17. > :16:23.COMMENTATOR: It was a dramatic and to a fantastic competition. On the

:16:24. > :16:30.brink of making history and taking her dad Olympic title until Michelle

:16:31. > :16:37.Carter took to the circuit. She had not thrown beyond 20 metres this

:16:38. > :16:44.year. In fact, she ran feet in the world. But a new national record

:16:45. > :16:51.after that throw. . No American woman has won the shotput fought 50

:16:52. > :17:04.years as she went on to the lead with that effort of 20.60 three. The

:17:05. > :17:14.big Kiwi had a chance to respond. You can see Adams 20.63 in the last

:17:15. > :17:24.round, as she did in the indoors, taking the title in Portland,

:17:25. > :17:33.Oregon. And this was Adams response. Well, it was over 20 metres but,

:17:34. > :17:39.amazingly, it was not enough and for the majority of the competition,

:17:40. > :17:48.Adams had the competition one. She thought she had done enough about

:17:49. > :17:55.right at the final round, with two throws remaining, Michelle Carter of

:17:56. > :18:01.the US snatched the gold away from the Kiwi. Deprived of her third

:18:02. > :18:07.consecutive gold medal and an amazing, will you do, wonderful

:18:08. > :18:14.performance from Michelle Carter and a gold medal. Congratulations all

:18:15. > :18:22.round. A good throw the last one from Adams are only good enough for

:18:23. > :18:33.silver. An amazing competition. That is your confirmation. Marton, season

:18:34. > :18:39.best for her and she gets bronze. Michelle Carter, in the very last

:18:40. > :18:54.round, an American record and a gold medal. So the hitch in, in the

:18:55. > :19:02.hammer qualification. -- Hotchon. She stepped in for this second round

:19:03. > :19:15.effort, looking to qualify. It was over the 70 metre line. At the time

:19:16. > :19:25.that took her into 10th place. And it was... Sophie not quite firing as

:19:26. > :19:33.she did in Beijing, yet. Monday morning is the final for the women's

:19:34. > :19:46.final and so Hitchon will be involved. That was her best throw.

:19:47. > :20:02.70 point 37. 12 to qualify. She is in 11th place. A resounding

:20:03. > :20:10.favourite, the Polish athlete. Hitchon made it into the top 12 and

:20:11. > :20:19.is in the finals. She spoke to Phil Jones. Well done on reaching yet

:20:20. > :20:26.another Olympic final. How nerve racking was it? Such a close

:20:27. > :20:32.competition. Yes, I made it a bit difficult for myself which I could

:20:33. > :20:37.have done better. Waiting in the end to see how the other girls throw is

:20:38. > :20:47.not what I want to be doing but hopefully I can put it together in

:20:48. > :20:52.the final. Rutherford had two fails and then just made it through, what

:20:53. > :20:56.is it like to go through that? You need to negotiate that tricky

:20:57. > :21:03.period. Qualification is always the hardest thing stops people can get

:21:04. > :21:09.carried away and focus on the final but you have to get there first. The

:21:10. > :21:17.great thing is you can tap into the memories, setting British records,

:21:18. > :21:20.pushing full medal? Anything can happen when you get in the final.

:21:21. > :21:27.Hopefully my technique will be better and I will perform better in

:21:28. > :21:33.the finals at does it feel massively different being here from the one in

:21:34. > :21:38.London? Obviously, I feel like I have more experience. In London, I

:21:39. > :21:43.did not really know what was going on and I just learning on each

:21:44. > :21:55.thing. We wish you well for that. Well done. STUDIO: Hitchon into the

:21:56. > :22:02.hammer final. Now join Desiree Henry, who has really gone through.

:22:03. > :22:16.Ash has got a slightly more difficult hit in terms of the times

:22:17. > :22:27.and experience. Ahye right next to her. Watch out for Williams. She has

:22:28. > :22:34.gone under 11 seconds this year. Ash gets a top start. The Jamaican,

:22:35. > :22:42.coming through. That will have to hang on to the fastest losers spot.

:22:43. > :22:49.If you look down at the least, I have not been able to do that, Ash

:22:50. > :23:02.only needs to run 11.4 which I think she did safely. Around 11 point 13 I

:23:03. > :23:06.should think. Just to come, she is OK at the minute and I suspect with

:23:07. > :23:13.only two more hits she will go through. I think you are right. She

:23:14. > :23:19.took on this race very well indeed. She kept her eyes focus, did not get

:23:20. > :23:27.distracted by other things going on around her, especially when Ahye

:23:28. > :23:34.started moving. I think she could get to the semifinals. At the blocks

:23:35. > :23:40.she was very assertive stop she took a lot of ground out to the other

:23:41. > :23:51.runners around her but Ahye was the real class in the field. Quite

:23:52. > :24:02.comfortable. I just wonder now, we obviously... The rest of the times,

:24:03. > :24:08.11.4 going to get you into the semi-final? That is not that quick.

:24:09. > :24:15.If you look at Desiree Henry, she was close to the personal best. It

:24:16. > :24:21.is about the athletes performing at the next heat to come is I think

:24:22. > :24:30.were the favourite is. It could be Elaine Thompson from Jamaica. As you

:24:31. > :24:39.watched the replay, the isolated shot, we are pleased? Not really,

:24:40. > :24:50.no. If I reached the second round, I will be happy. I know my body is in

:24:51. > :24:55.good shape. Injury free. I happy to be here and I proud of myself but as

:24:56. > :24:59.they get to the second round I can only progress and get better. It is

:25:00. > :25:07.looking for you at the moment to progress. Tomorrow, it goes up

:25:08. > :25:15.another notch. Definitely. That isn't a good thing, getting into the

:25:16. > :25:18.semis, racing at midnight, tried to get used to the weather, I have had

:25:19. > :25:25.to challenge myself and I always good at challenging myself. I know I

:25:26. > :25:33.can do it. I can do better. How strange is running so late? It is

:25:34. > :25:39.not right for athletes to do, we should be asleep, we are human. But

:25:40. > :25:44.I will just try my best and that is what I hear to do. We wish you well

:25:45. > :25:50.for tomorrow and well done. Thank you very much. STUDIO: Let's just

:25:51. > :26:04.clarify the results. You have heard Asha Philip's

:26:05. > :26:12.analysis of it. She looks pretty safe at the moment in terms of her

:26:13. > :26:26.getting through to the semifinals. On to hit seven. Late into the

:26:27. > :26:34.night, 11:30pm here. Elaine Thompson, she is the quickest in the

:26:35. > :26:41.world this year and she is accepting their chairs and adulation of the

:26:42. > :26:50.crowd inside the stadium. It is certainly not a full stadium. A lot

:26:51. > :27:05.of support also for the Brazilian athlete, Santos. The athlete from

:27:06. > :27:31.Kazakhstan is also very quick. The starter, the man in the hat...

:27:32. > :27:37.Not the starter, one of the officials, not happy. Perhaps he had

:27:38. > :27:43.a quiet evening and wanted to do something. Maybe the crowd had

:27:44. > :27:50.something to do with it. Maybe they have just come in from a late-night.

:27:51. > :27:59.And huge number of Jamaican fans but Santos, asking for a little bit of

:28:00. > :28:05.harsh. The Brazilians, the Jamaicans, lot of yellow and gold in

:28:06. > :28:17.the stadium tonight. It was getting a bit boisterous down there. It is

:28:18. > :28:18.the Santos Faddes. Once again, the penultimate heat in the first round

:28:19. > :28:47.of the women's 100 metres. Elaine Thompson moving through. Suit

:28:48. > :28:55.to go through automatically. A good run by Santos in second place. A

:28:56. > :29:01.hint of a breeze in their faces. Just behind Elaine Thompson, Santos.

:29:02. > :29:11.Elaine Thompson has got deep below 11 seconds, running only 11 point

:29:12. > :29:19.21. The only woman to go below 11 is her fellow country person. That is

:29:20. > :29:25.the strongest headwind we have seen all day, -1, which is not

:29:26. > :29:31.particularly strong. I will like to see how Elaine Thompson runs this

:29:32. > :29:38.race head-on. She absolutely rocketed out of the blocks earlier

:29:39. > :29:48.this year. She'd just had a little more of a lack of approach, is a

:29:49. > :29:53.word I would like to use, you can see how relaxed she is. She is just

:29:54. > :30:02.cantering, not even noticing how close everybody is to her and

:30:03. > :30:07.probably takes a look and realises how close it is. She works hard and

:30:08. > :30:20.gets herself into that beautiful, long stride. Remember, this lady has

:30:21. > :30:25.gone sub 21 .7. In the 200 metres. Look at how she is now totally at

:30:26. > :30:33.ease. Not putting any effort whatsoever to dot running into a -1

:30:34. > :30:41.headwind and taking that heat. I think there is much more to come

:30:42. > :30:46.tomorrow. She goes safely through. Confirmations of the two automatic

:30:47. > :30:56.qualifiers that Elaine Thompson and Santos.

:30:57. > :31:06.Asha Philip still hanging on in the fastest loser, I think now, she

:31:07. > :31:15.Well, a slightly surreal, this, 11::30. I can remember a race in

:31:16. > :31:19.Florence, in Italy, and a dream mile at a quarter to immediate midnight,

:31:20. > :31:23.but this must be, difficult. I've been reading one or two comments

:31:24. > :31:28.from people saying it's got chilly, it was cold. So no-one is going to

:31:29. > :31:34.take any risks, apart from anything else. The temperature is dropping

:31:35. > :31:41.quite quickly. You mention the head wind. For young 19-year-old Darryl

:31:42. > :31:47.Neita, I'm not sure she thought she'd be running past her bedtime.

:31:48. > :31:52.They worked hard already and they have been relaxing. They have got to

:31:53. > :31:56.do the complete opposite. They need to raise their game to compete.

:31:57. > :32:02.These rounds aren't easy. When you get rid of that easy first round

:32:03. > :32:08.race, and things change up. This is pretty tough. I'm sorry, Colin, he

:32:09. > :32:13.is finding pinning that jumper on pretty tough. And he's gone... Well,

:32:14. > :32:19.it's a bit fingers and thumbs, isn't he? Yeah, I will do it myself.

:32:20. > :32:25."That's fine, I will do it myself." Bashful, he is. When you're looking

:32:26. > :32:35.down at it, it's never so easy. It's upside down. Oh, careful. And I've

:32:36. > :32:38.always said, how hasn't anybody invented anything better than safety

:32:39. > :32:43.pins? Soon as you start to sweat, they start to roll up. There's the

:32:44. > :32:49.safety pins that will matter! She's been challenged on the basis of, I

:32:50. > :32:53.think, she said, I haven't got that. That means a photo finish number.

:32:54. > :33:01.She should have one of those as well, bless her. Let's see what she

:33:02. > :33:06.has in store. Not an easy one. English Gardner right next to her.

:33:07. > :33:14.The American champion. Carina Horn has been in good form, from South

:33:15. > :33:22.Africa. And we've got Rebekha Haase of Germany well, right on the far

:33:23. > :33:29.side, lane two. And incredibly experienced. Fourth in the Olympics

:33:30. > :33:35.all the way back in Athens in 2004. And picked up a silver medal at the

:33:36. > :33:40.European Championships recently in Amsterdam. Carina Horn didn't make

:33:41. > :33:44.it through to the London Diamond League final. She was pretty close

:33:45. > :33:58.to her own national record this year. And English Gardner, 10:44.

:33:59. > :34:00.Superbly fast time. Jump seventh on the all-time list. And 19-year-old

:34:01. > :34:11.Darryl Neita. There she is. What a superb year

:34:12. > :34:17.he's having, really. And qualified by right, finishing the top 2 at the

:34:18. > :34:26.trials, having already run 2 qualification times. 11.23, her

:34:27. > :34:30.personal best. An opportunity for her, despite the chill and

:34:31. > :34:33.everything else, here at the Olympics, first time, first round.

:34:34. > :34:54.The American champion, next to Gardner gets out well. So does the

:34:55. > :34:59.far side. Horn trying to get up there. But English Gardner going

:35:00. > :35:08.well. It's going to be English Gardner. Carina Horn will second

:35:09. > :35:13.second place. Neita was fourth. There are 8 fastest lower spots.

:35:14. > :35:23.She's a bit distance distant off there. Still 11.367 will get you

:35:24. > :35:27.through. Let's wait and see. An incredible experience for Darryl

:35:28. > :35:30.Neita, running this time of night. English Gardner looking pretty good,

:35:31. > :35:36.pretty solid. What an experience. You're right. I hope that she's

:35:37. > :35:38.enjoyed this whole experience. Shed qualified in the trials in the

:35:39. > :35:46.second position. Surprised many people. So for me, it's great to see

:35:47. > :35:52.her here, getting experience. What you gain from being in the warm up

:35:53. > :35:56.area with the best athletes in the world in your event, you watch you

:35:57. > :36:04.how they are prepare for the big races. It makes a huge difference in

:36:05. > :36:11.the learning curve. I'm pleased he's here and doing what she's doing. I

:36:12. > :36:17.suspect the fact that Lalova may get a qualifying stop. She may have tied

:36:18. > :36:29.for the eighth spot. I'm counting now. No, she's out. She will be

:36:30. > :36:34.joint ninth fastest, sadly. Still, it great relay team we've

:36:35. > :36:40.got, of course. And she's a big part of that. Stheel be definitely in

:36:41. > :36:46.that squad. Preparing well to go out there. Go under 43 seconds in the

:36:47. > :36:58.relay team. But hopefully, she's gained a lot of experience along the

:36:59. > :37:05.way. So just confirmation then. Sadly, Darryl Neita, that's the

:37:06. > :37:10.joint ninth fastest. Only the top 8 fastest lose go through. I missed

:37:11. > :37:16.out on qualifying for the next round by 1 place. Why was it awful?

:37:17. > :37:23.Unfortunately, my pins all came off at the beginning of the race. I

:37:24. > :37:28.didn't get a chance to do a run-up. But I tried to stay focused. The run

:37:29. > :37:32.just wasn't great. But I'm happy to be at the Olympic Games. My first

:37:33. > :37:37.one. I would have liked to have done better at that. At the age of 19, so

:37:38. > :37:42.much you can take from an experience like that. What will be the lasting

:37:43. > :37:49.memory, the build-up, the preparation, being in the call room?

:37:50. > :37:54.Hopefully, I got the relay. It's not all over yet. I have learned an

:37:55. > :38:05.awful lot already. Tell me about this. The official was trying to...

:38:06. > :38:14.Did you lose focus at the point? When do your pings ever come off? I

:38:15. > :38:19.was fry trying to put them on. The pins were quite rubbish. I couldn't

:38:20. > :38:24.get them on. You got the relay to come. That's the positive thing. And

:38:25. > :38:29.you've been part of such a successful squad and team this year,

:38:30. > :38:35.breaking the British record. You can switch focus now. Definitely, going

:38:36. > :38:42.to do that. Can you just feel, can't you, the

:38:43. > :38:47.sadness there in her whole experience, it has come down, her

:38:48. > :38:53.distraction going on her number and the pins, and having a run-out. But

:38:54. > :39:01.perhaps people saying she needs to be bigger than that. It's her first

:39:02. > :39:07.Olympics. Things can throw you. I wish she had taken the pins from

:39:08. > :39:12.that guy. He was fumbling about with it. She was just like, give it to me

:39:13. > :39:18.and let me do it. It's unfortunate. It was very close for her, getting

:39:19. > :39:23.into that next round. And it's a different thing to watch because you

:39:24. > :39:29.know, you know she wanted this, she is in great shape, had a fantastic

:39:30. > :39:35.season. At 19, something like that can throw you off. A veteran, you

:39:36. > :39:44.may say, come on, you should know better. But a 19-year-old, it's a

:39:45. > :39:51.tough 1. And she is waited around all day. Even if you wake up and go

:39:52. > :39:56.back for a nap, it's all you're thinking about. "I'm 19, at the

:39:57. > :40:03.Olympics, and I'm running at midnight." Exactly. These guys just

:40:04. > :40:07.want to get out there. And she has to understand all this experience,

:40:08. > :40:13.competing at this late hour, you know, is all good for her. She'll

:40:14. > :40:19.learn how to manage herself better as she progresses through her

:40:20. > :40:23.career. And we'll debate at length what the alternative is to those

:40:24. > :40:28.blinking numbers and those pins. Maybe it's lasers on the heads,

:40:29. > :40:38.tattoos. Must be something better. Let's go back to heat 2. We'll take

:40:39. > :40:44.you through the 100m heat 2 to 5. So Dafne Schippers, lines up in lane

:40:45. > :40:51.9. Her first race in what is going to be a very busy schedule. First

:40:52. > :40:58.two to go through. She's also got the quick Pinto of Germany in lane 5

:40:59. > :41:03.to contend with here. And not such a good start from Pinto or Schippers

:41:04. > :41:07.either. The Colombian got away very, very quickly. And Pinto finally gets

:41:08. > :41:13.going. Dafne Schippers cannoters through. Not the, not in greatest of

:41:14. > :41:18.starters. That is what holds her back. That wasn't one of her best

:41:19. > :41:21.but she's playing it a little bit safe in this early round. But very,

:41:22. > :41:32.very safely through there. It was a safe run, Steve. Spot on,

:41:33. > :41:39.there. She must have studied the form before she came here. You know

:41:40. > :41:43.what? It's late in the evening. As soon as I feel myself picking up the

:41:44. > :41:57.pace, a little glance to the left-hand side, and just edged away.

:41:58. > :42:03.Perfectly qualified. Pinto, as expected, the only one to join her

:42:04. > :42:08.as the automatic qualifier. Heat 3 of the women's 100m. Heat 3 of 8.

:42:09. > :42:17.Tori Bowie going here. Blessing Okagbare as well. And cleanly away.

:42:18. > :42:21.And Bowie with that great 200m speed will start to come through. Okagbare

:42:22. > :42:25.is struggling a little bit. But then she comes through as well. And a

:42:26. > :42:32.look across to Tori Bowie, lck side by side, they cross the line. Tori

:42:33. > :42:37.Bowie taking it. Takes it just from Blessing Okagbare. And the former

:42:38. > :42:41.double Commonwealth champion, the great long jumper as well, Okagbare,

:42:42. > :42:45.came through. A couple of sprinters who may take a little bit more time

:42:46. > :42:52.to get going, but once they get moving, very, very quick indeed. And

:42:53. > :42:58.Bowie in lane eight is one of those athletes, once she gets that

:42:59. > :43:08.movement of herself up and running, at maximum pelt, well, she produces

:43:09. > :43:13.a 10.708. There's a fluent runner when she has to press. Safely

:43:14. > :43:17.through the heats. Going according to form at the moment. Just ahead of

:43:18. > :43:27.Blessing Okagbare. And they are the 2 automatic qualifiers.

:43:28. > :43:34.Not the best start from... And other on the far side, Switzerland going

:43:35. > :43:43.well. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce now. Will just about take this. And she

:43:44. > :43:50.does. Whoa! 10.96. Into a very, very slight head wind. No wonder she

:43:51. > :43:54.smiles. That's about as good as I've seen. She's run a tad quicker than

:43:55. > :44:00.that, but at the looked pretty comfortable. Not a blistering start,

:44:01. > :44:08.but pretty impressive. I was really surprised. The clock actually

:44:09. > :44:14.stopped at 10.96. She had a very controlled start. She didn't haumer

:44:15. > :44:18.out of the blocks -- hammer it out of the blocks. An incredible amount

:44:19. > :44:22.of turnover to put herself yards in front of the field and leaves it

:44:23. > :44:28.there. Tells people, if you want this, come and get me. Very few

:44:29. > :44:33.occasions they come back to her. Here, a lovely controlled 1 from the

:44:34. > :44:42.blocks. And she ended up just switching down and coasting through.

:44:43. > :44:48.A very strong performance. That will raise one or two eyebrows.

:44:49. > :44:56.Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce finishing very strongly and relaxed.

:44:57. > :45:14.Silver in the world juniors in Poland, she goes in lane 8.

:45:15. > :45:20.Two to go true automatically. And Bartoletta with a little bit of work

:45:21. > :45:25.to do. Swoboda leading at the moment. Bartoletta trying to get

:45:26. > :45:30.back. And it will be those two. Good run by Swoboda. I think that

:45:31. > :45:36.Bartoletta just took it on the line. The camera focuses on Swoboda. She

:45:37. > :45:40.ran so well. What a talent she is. So, so quick out of the blocks. Has

:45:41. > :45:45.just turned 19. I think that Bartoletta may have just got that.

:45:46. > :45:52.Very, very close indeed. They were the two to go through. Swoboda,

:45:53. > :45:57.second place. Smiling because she is safely through. We know she starts

:45:58. > :46:02.very, very quickly. And Bartoletta, again, a bit of work to do here.

:46:03. > :46:09.Absolutely right. I was thinking, does that really look like something

:46:10. > :46:14.who has run 10.78? Not at all. Desiree Henry with a very good run.

:46:15. > :46:25.The WHO quickest times by a distance coming in the previous heat. With

:46:26. > :46:28.Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Talu. Bartoletta and Swoboda coming

:46:29. > :46:32.through. We got there in the end. And of course, tomorrow, the

:46:33. > :46:37.semi-finals and final in the evening. Is there anything you've

:46:38. > :46:42.seen today to make you think that Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce can't be the

:46:43. > :46:48.first athlete ever to win 3 consecutive gold Olympic medals? She

:46:49. > :46:53.hasn't been as smooth and dominant in the past few years. She suffered

:46:54. > :46:58.with a toe injury most of the year. And she is starting to run into

:46:59. > :47:08.shape. That's going in the right direction. But if Thompson can get

:47:09. > :47:10.back to the form she displayed, the Americans, English Gardner,

:47:11. > :47:14.Bartoletta, and Tori Bowie, all of them are capable of running really

:47:15. > :47:20.fast. I think, those times weren't impressive. Everyone is getting used

:47:21. > :47:26.to running at midnight. That's taking a bit of adjustment. It only

:47:27. > :47:29.takes one time for veterans, I think we'll see faster times from then,

:47:30. > :47:33.and start to see the field come together. It will be tough for

:47:34. > :47:40.Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. It's not impossible. She's the best of the

:47:41. > :47:46.field, but her preparation hasn't got to her. We have seen Valerie

:47:47. > :47:51.Adams failed to be the first to do that. And there could be an

:47:52. > :47:59.athlete... It will be interesting to see whether they of them pull them

:48:00. > :48:05.off. It's spg to say "fail" when you are talking about 3 Olympic gold. I

:48:06. > :48:12.said failed to pull it off. Don't get started on me! I'm so fragile at

:48:13. > :48:18.this time of night. Let's talk about the help at that time long. At the

:48:19. > :48:24.end, it's fair to say that Jess has come out smiling and. And Kath

:48:25. > :48:29.looked like she had it and lost it. You have to approach the heptathlon

:48:30. > :48:34.for the long game. It's 2 days of competition. You can't be down on

:48:35. > :48:39.yourself after day one. The ability to reflect, put it in a box and

:48:40. > :48:46.leave it behind and what you need to do. Kat still needs to learn that.

:48:47. > :48:53.Everyone was done down on their best. She has to put that into

:48:54. > :49:00.perspective and move on. She's got 2 good events. She can turn around her

:49:01. > :49:05.fortunes very easy indeed. And looking back to last year, when she

:49:06. > :49:13.crashed out. How are you feel being her progress in 12 months? Ifg

:49:14. > :49:19.hoping for more of what densese talked about. More of an improved

:49:20. > :49:24.ability to put a poor performance behind her. She hasn't been able to

:49:25. > :49:28.do that. She hasn't learned that lesson from last year. I'm not very

:49:29. > :49:32.confident, based on the body language that I saw at the

:49:33. > :49:38.interview, the very flat affect that I saw from her after that event.

:49:39. > :49:42.She's got great events coming up. But I don't know if she can take

:49:43. > :49:48.advantage of that because of the attitude. She has a night to sleep

:49:49. > :49:54.on it. And it starts with long jump, one of her strongest. It is. But I

:49:55. > :49:59.don't know if that's the issue. I don't expect a good long jump if she

:50:00. > :50:05.doesn't get the attitude right. And just to remind you of the PBs that

:50:06. > :50:12.they both hold going into their final 3 events. Johnson-Thompson

:50:13. > :50:18.with that 6.93. At the anniversary games, she was fantastic. She's a

:50:19. > :50:24.world class long jumper in her day. Jess is also one of the strongest.

:50:25. > :50:29.She can pull out big jumps. The javelin, pretty even? It is what it

:50:30. > :50:34.is. Ennis-Hill is capable of throwing very far. What we've

:50:35. > :50:38.highlighted here, she's able to take the disappointments on the chin and

:50:39. > :50:44.that won't affect her performance greatly. She'll bounce back, she'll

:50:45. > :50:49.be fighting to the bitter end and Kat needs to be there to fight until

:50:50. > :50:59.the end. We want the 800m to be one heck of a head to head, don't we?

:51:00. > :51:05.Absolutely. All it takes is for her to jump 6.80 plus. She needs to put

:51:06. > :51:09.the demons to bed. I'm going to let you go. I think the lights are going

:51:10. > :51:15.to go out. We are the only people left in here. And let's be honest,

:51:16. > :51:21.we got the point where there weren't that many people left. Let's sleep

:51:22. > :51:28.on the idea that tomorrow maybe a repeat of super Saturday. The

:51:29. > :51:30.atmosphere was incredible. Something I have never experienced. I won't

:51:31. > :51:50.experience that again in my It would be a real super Saturday.

:51:51. > :51:54.It may not be a super Saturday for Brazil, because I just want to show

:51:55. > :52:01.you some pictures. I've been watching the swimming and the track

:52:02. > :52:05.and field, but I can't take my eyes off this match. Martha has gone

:52:06. > :52:10.close for Brazil. It's goalless after 90 minutes. We are heading

:52:11. > :52:16.into extra time. Brazil had 20 shots to Australia's 7. All the

:52:17. > :52:23.possession, many chances, but not in opportunity to put the ball into the

:52:24. > :52:27.back of the net. This would be an incredible upset for the hosts if

:52:28. > :52:31.they were to go out to Australia. Let's go back to the swimming. It's

:52:32. > :52:39.been another brilliant night in the pool. It's quiet in here. There's at

:52:40. > :52:46.fantastic DJ, that drops tunes. I can't get away with that phrase,

:52:47. > :52:52.drops tunes. Jazz Carlin had her second medal of the Olympics. Let's

:52:53. > :52:58.relive the final stages of her race. Ready to go now for Katie Ledecky.

:52:59. > :53:05.Dominant in this race. Look at the race for silver. Can Jazz Carlin get

:53:06. > :53:10.back? Taking a bit of a lead there. Sheds back to 3 tens of a second

:53:11. > :53:19.here. And Jazz Carlin just needs to stay with her. She's got decent

:53:20. > :53:23.speed. But she was fourth in the400. Jazz Carlin was the silver

:53:24. > :53:29.medallist. Great news for Great Britain. 50m to go. And Katie

:53:30. > :53:34.Ledecky, no doubt about the champion, she's absolutely streets

:53:35. > :53:41.ahead. Jazz Carlin going over now. Half a second ahead on the silver

:53:42. > :53:46.medal. Carlin sprinting down. But Katie Ledecky, one of the greatest

:53:47. > :53:51.women's swimmers I have seen. It will be a massive world record for

:53:52. > :53:57.Katie Ledecky. It's her own world record. Goodness me! The gold to

:53:58. > :54:04.Katie Ledecky of the USA. A massive world record, and brilliant news for

:54:05. > :54:14.Great Britain. A second sild for Carlin! She wins the silver! The

:54:15. > :54:27.bronze to Kapas of Hungary. That's great news for Britain. 2 silvers.

:54:28. > :54:32.And Jazz Carlin's first Olympics but her second Olympics. No doubt with a

:54:33. > :54:38.tear in their eye, watching on. She did this at the last 2 Olympics. You

:54:39. > :54:43.were as nervous for Jazz. Missing out, but she had such a good meet

:54:44. > :54:49.and rightly so. She's been fantastic, the past couple of years.

:54:50. > :54:55.And coming into this meet, more geared towards the 400 than the 800.

:54:56. > :55:01.And stepping into this race, you kind of know that Katie was going to

:55:02. > :55:09.get the gold. It must have been really tough for her. She didn't see

:55:10. > :55:15.Belmonty either. She swam her own race. I couldn't be happier for her.

:55:16. > :55:23.I love her. She certainly has an army of fans, and at the risk of

:55:24. > :55:30.having a -- sounding a bit like a mum, which I am, it's so nice to see

:55:31. > :55:36.her smile. We all get curve balls in our life. But she had a few curve

:55:37. > :55:40.balls and upsets because she's kept fighting. All the early mornings and

:55:41. > :55:47.the sacrifice she made is worth it. You love it. It's the most amazing.

:55:48. > :55:51.She's one of those people, I've got a soft spot for distance swimmers.

:55:52. > :55:56.You spend a lot of time following that line. Do you? I have become

:55:57. > :56:04.soft! Congratulations to Jazz Carlin. She can relax now. Fran

:56:05. > :56:11.hassal is still in the fight for a medal. Where are they? And it turns

:56:12. > :56:15.out, can you believe this, at an Olympics, the bus driver bringing

:56:16. > :56:21.fran and 3 other athletes got lost on the way here! I don't think they

:56:22. > :56:26.got lost, the bus headed to a different venue. The stadium is not

:56:27. > :56:34.near here. For the people at home, took a wrong turn and went the other

:56:35. > :56:38.way. I know that Fran handles anything coming her way. Fran has

:56:39. > :56:43.been through everything as an athlete. I know she looked fantastic

:56:44. > :56:50.this morning. She'll want to get the job done. Another challenge to add

:56:51. > :56:57.to the list, the bus driver that takes you to the driest venue.

:56:58. > :57:14.Right, let's see Fran in heat one of the women's 50 free. The first

:57:15. > :57:20.semifinal, and Fran Halsall of Great Britain is in lane 4. And five,

:57:21. > :57:22.Bronte Campbell-Brown of Australia, the world champion. -- Bronte

:57:23. > :57:32.Campbell of Australia. So goes into this, the first

:57:33. > :57:34.semifinal fastest. Great lane. Just do it again, Fran. The time this

:57:35. > :57:55.morning was wonderful. Good reaction. Very good under

:57:56. > :58:02.water, she's going to come up maybe second. Very good start from

:58:03. > :58:10.Denmark. But the red Halsall, holding well. It looks like it may

:58:11. > :58:16.be may deeros at the moment. It looks good. See how he gets the

:58:17. > :58:22.touch. She's got the touch! And she gets first. A huge cheer from the

:58:23. > :58:32.crowd because the Brazilian swimmer has come third, and she can well

:58:33. > :58:40.make the final with that. Halsall wins it by 2-100ths. What a great

:58:41. > :58:44.swim from Halsall. She had a good reaction from the gun. Not as good

:58:45. > :58:49.as this morning, but a brilliant swim. And the crowd that stayed

:58:50. > :58:54.behind, really witnessed something special there. I'm pretty sure

:58:55. > :58:57.she'll make it, Andy. But Fran Halsall, we are going to see what

:58:58. > :59:06.the second one does. The second semifinal. But Halsall will get and

:59:07. > :59:13.draw some significant confidence from that, tipping out Bronte

:59:14. > :59:18.Campbell, brilliant. If you walk watch the finish, didn't finish on

:59:19. > :59:23.the end of her stroke. A little bit short. The right arm in, a little

:59:24. > :59:25.bit short. Wasn't on the stretch. She can go faster than that. Great

:59:26. > :59:36.news. Well, again, the Brazilians are

:59:37. > :59:39.having somebody to here for the tomorrow's finals session. They have

:59:40. > :59:42.been putting them in. Great semifinal. For Great Britain's Fran

:59:43. > :59:59.Halsall. Wins it. Quite a story to tell us about

:00:00. > :00:05.tonight, haven't you? The whole Olympics had to be stopped for me

:00:06. > :00:13.tonight. We got on our bus, 2 hours before start of our race, come down

:00:14. > :00:18.to the pool. It took us to the Olympic stadium, 40 minutes in the

:00:19. > :00:23.opposite direction. 40 minutes back to the village, and back to the pool

:00:24. > :00:28.for warm-up. My emotions and adrenaline were all over the place.

:00:29. > :00:32.For god's sake, the one thing I've been trying to do was keep my

:00:33. > :00:37.emotions in check for tomorrow night. I know I'm in good shape. If

:00:38. > :00:42.I can win my semi, yeah, I'm happy with that. That's where all the

:00:43. > :00:48.experience of all the years of competing came so useful. I was

:00:49. > :00:52.trying to work it out. 10, 12 years. You have medals of every colour from

:00:53. > :00:58.every competition going. Except for this one. Yeah, except for this one.

:00:59. > :01:02.Hopefully, I have earned myself the right to compete in the final

:01:03. > :01:07.tomorrow. And see what these girls do now. I'll give it everything

:01:08. > :01:12.tomorrow. And this morning was so easy but tonight, a bit more rushed,

:01:13. > :01:17.a bit more forced. If I get on the right bus tomorrow... Please do

:01:18. > :01:23.that! We are so much looking forward to seeing you. And you know you're

:01:24. > :01:27.capable of it. All our very best. Now, fran has said so many times for

:01:28. > :01:32.her, it's all about being in the right head space. Do you think she's

:01:33. > :01:38.in the right head space to get a medal? That smile and that laugh,

:01:39. > :01:42.that's Fran in the right place. She goes into that final, fourth

:01:43. > :01:56.fastest. Let's see who she's going to be taking on in the second heat.

:01:57. > :02:03.The fastest after the heats. Cate Campbell in sixth.

:02:04. > :02:10.Second semifinal, women's 50m freestyle. Campbell in sixth,

:02:11. > :02:19.defending champion Fran Halsall swam a really great

:02:20. > :02:25.first semifinal. An interesting start. She went 13m underwater. The

:02:26. > :02:31.defending champion from Holland up in two. It's really close, Cate

:02:32. > :02:35.Campbell now starting to come through. The yellow hat of Australia

:02:36. > :02:43.through from the bottom. She may take it. It will be tight. Oh! Blume

:02:44. > :02:50.got it! She the worst start by a decent amount. She wins the second

:02:51. > :02:57.semifinal. She'll go into the final fastest. Campbell second, the

:02:58. > :03:01.defending champion third. So the top 3 beating Fran's time. Fran will go

:03:02. > :03:12.into the final fourth fastest. That's a really good place to be,

:03:13. > :03:17.fourth. In the yellow lanes in the left, Blume took a long time under

:03:18. > :03:21.water. And surprisingly getting the touch of that one. I think, look

:03:22. > :03:28.that video again. The race video, analyse that with your coach and get

:03:29. > :03:32.up and on it. Well, going to be an interesting final. The pressure is

:03:33. > :03:44.off in a lot of ways. Down in fourth. She'll have a good lane,

:03:45. > :03:52.next to Cate Campbell. So the second semifinal of the women's 50m,

:03:53. > :03:57.another shock swim. Campbell second. The world record holder, and

:03:58. > :04:00.defending champion third. So Blume of Denmark will go into the final

:04:01. > :04:20.fastest. Let's have a look at the seeds. Here we go. Cate Campbell

:04:21. > :04:24.second. And Fran Halsall will be between Cate Campbell and Simone

:04:25. > :04:30.Manuel. Some of those ladies are looking so impressive. Who is going

:04:31. > :04:38.to push it the most? They are all going to push it. Only a quarter of

:04:39. > :04:45.the second separating all 8. Blume is a bit of a surprise. It's one of

:04:46. > :04:51.those things, we saw it in the men's with err vin. And Fran is in there

:04:52. > :04:57.with a shout. We'll have that final for you tomorrow night. We are a bit

:04:58. > :05:05.getty with excitement. We are so pleased with Roger's shirt. Jazz

:05:06. > :05:12.Carlin's dad and mum Mary. You look like a different woman. Has tonight

:05:13. > :05:19.been enjoyable? Really inenjoyed it. I'm over the moon. Roger, this

:05:20. > :05:26.shirt. Talk us through it. It's my lucky shirt. Jazz doesn't think it's

:05:27. > :05:34.a lucky shirt. She just thinks she's swimming well. Where have you worn

:05:35. > :05:41.this? All the big events. The Olympics, British champs. It's not

:05:42. > :05:47.years old I have only worn it 4 times. Do not wash that shirt! I

:05:48. > :05:52.have washed it. Can you bring it tomorrow and does it work for other

:05:53. > :06:00.members of the going to be team? I'm going to use it with Jazz swims. It

:06:01. > :06:04.would fit you! Don't do that. It's a treasured possession now.

:06:05. > :06:11.Congratulations. Thanks for all the support. Well, we back Jazz. And you

:06:12. > :06:16.know what? Never mind Bill, it's all about the shirt. This is what is

:06:17. > :06:22.going right! Definitely wear that shirt tomorrow night. So Team GB, a

:06:23. > :06:25.great night for them tomorrow. The boys are going in fastest in the

:06:26. > :06:33.relay. Fran up, going to be a good night. What are you most looking for

:06:34. > :06:38.forward to, and can you see the boys getting on the podium? Fran first of

:06:39. > :06:42.all, and she's won medals and everything else, but not done it at

:06:43. > :06:51.the Olympics. We find the fastest woman on the planet to travel

:06:52. > :06:56.through water. The 4 X 100 medley relay is going to be exciting. We

:06:57. > :07:03.have a chance to push the Americans. It's so bizarre. Especially if Roger

:07:04. > :07:09.wears that shirt. This place is normally rocking but everybody has

:07:10. > :07:14.gone. It's like tumbleweed is here. When the Brazilians are out, it's

:07:15. > :07:20.like a football crowd. When Phelps is out, people go bananas. Tonight,

:07:21. > :07:25.we saw something very, very bizarre in the 100 fly. Singapore's first

:07:26. > :07:30.gold medal in the pool. We saw history in the making. How unusual

:07:31. > :07:37.to see 3 guys in silver, joint silver. I have never seen that.

:07:38. > :07:48.These flee have been through so many together. You got the Phelps and the

:07:49. > :07:54.Chad battle, but Csah has been there. And he's fallen short of

:07:55. > :07:58.Phelps. So nice. They all held hands behind the podium, so lovely. And

:07:59. > :08:04.they are all really happy for one another. No kind of disappointment

:08:05. > :08:12.they got silver. It was really nice. It was a nice ending: The 3 of them

:08:13. > :08:18.together. Lost the race in the end but a nice finish. We made so much

:08:19. > :08:23.of the shadow boxing and the trash talking between Chad and Phelps. In

:08:24. > :08:30.honour of them, come on, let's do what they did. What are you doing?

:08:31. > :08:41.That middle hand! Jason, can I say, can you give us a moment next time

:08:42. > :08:48.for the toga party? Wow! Her head is going to explode. Jason... Thank you

:08:49. > :08:55.very much indeed. I quite like Roger's shirt. Can he loan it to me

:08:56. > :08:59.tomorrow. One of the big gold medal matches today, of course, was the

:09:00. > :09:06.tennis gold medal in the men's singles. Let's show you what

:09:07. > :09:14.happened. Rafael Nadal and mark Lopez. We are going to join it with

:09:15. > :09:32.Spain 5-4 up. The Romanians are serving to stay in the match.

:09:33. > :09:38.He was trying to guide it through and he did!

:09:39. > :09:47.That time, a lot of height on the lob. It's dropping on the... Which

:09:48. > :09:55.makes it a very tough shot to hit in this pressure cooker situation. Up

:09:56. > :10:19.on their feet once more. Third championship point.

:10:20. > :10:42.They celebrate with a huge hug. This classic context, what a spectacle in

:10:43. > :10:43.this men's doubles gold medal encounter. Great respect between the

:10:44. > :10:54.players. Such an amazing battle, great tennis

:10:55. > :11:01.out there. And the emotions, the drama... Had it all. And what a

:11:02. > :11:14.reaction from Mark and Rafa. They dropped to the court. Look at him!

:11:15. > :11:20.He has won 14 grand slam titles, Olympic singles gold. This is right

:11:21. > :11:29.up for them. Doing it with his buddy and doing it for Spain. All the

:11:30. > :11:32.injuries Nadal has had. The Brazilian crowd absolutely love the

:11:33. > :11:39.Spanish team. And that is what it means. The medal table. The United

:11:40. > :11:42.States lead the way. China 13 gold medals, but look at Great Britain,

:11:43. > :11:54.up the 7 after a terrific day. We are just going to show you what

:11:55. > :12:02.is happening at the soccer. I said at the start of the show, you may

:12:03. > :12:07.remember this ground, because it was the 1 where Brazil was beaten 7-1.

:12:08. > :12:14.Brazil are struggling to get past Australia. This as quarterfinal

:12:15. > :12:20.match. The Brazilian public want gold medals for Brazil's men and

:12:21. > :12:24.women's team. And Australia are sgifrt minutes away from forcing a

:12:25. > :12:31.penalty shoot out. It's live on the red button. So another golden day

:12:32. > :12:38.for Great Britain, but the last word goes to Bradley Wiggins. Britain's

:12:39. > :12:42.most detention decorated Olympian. Thank you so much for watching.

:12:43. > :12:50.We'll see you on day 8. Whatever happens now, I can always say, I got

:12:51. > :12:57.an Olympic medal. Great Britain will win the bronze medal. Great stuff by

:12:58. > :13:05.Wiggins! Come on Bradley! The wenter of the bronze medal -- the winner of

:13:06. > :13:12.the bronze medal. And Great Britain win the silver medal. This is the

:13:13. > :13:17.one. There it is! Bradley Wiggins wins the gold medal! The British

:13:18. > :13:31.quartet really the Olympic champions. Bradley Wiggins is a gold

:13:32. > :13:33.medal winner and Olympic champion. It's golden gold
