:01:34. > :01:44.Greg Rutherford is the Olympic champion.

:01:45. > :01:56.Jessica Ennis is the Olympic champion. The first all-round

:01:57. > :02:03.athlete in the world. He is a double Olympic champion. Have you ever seen

:02:04. > :02:07.anything like that? Hello, a very good evening. Day seven of the

:02:08. > :02:11.Olympic Games of the biggest and fittest sports stars on the planet

:02:12. > :02:17.are in Rio. The athletics is underway. Four years of hard work,

:02:18. > :02:20.blood, sweat and tears. This is the time of Rutherford, Jessica

:02:21. > :02:22.Ennis-Hill and of course, Usain Bolt. This is what is coming up

:02:23. > :02:32.tonight. The defending champion, Jessica

:02:33. > :02:36.Ennis-Hill in bronze position after a thrilling first morning of the

:02:37. > :02:45.heptathlon. Tonight it is the shot put and 200 metres. But it is great

:02:46. > :02:54.Britain's Katarina Johnson-Thompson, in gold medal position, breaking the

:02:55. > :02:57.British record in the high jump. Rio ready for Rutherford, the Olympic

:02:58. > :03:03.champion gets his Games up and running in the long jump. On the

:03:04. > :03:09.track, Laura Muir broke Kelly Holmes' British record in the

:03:10. > :03:16.anniversary Games. She goes in the 1500 metre shortly. But we shall

:03:17. > :03:21.also see another Lauret in the 1500, Laura Weightman going very soon.

:03:22. > :03:29.South Africa's world champ begins his quest for Olympic glory in just

:03:30. > :03:39.over an hour. That is in the 400 metres. GB's Matthew Hudson-Smith

:03:40. > :03:46.from Wolverhampton goes in heat six and is up against the Olympic

:03:47. > :03:53.champion Kirani James. But also, what a few days we have had in the

:03:54. > :03:57.Olympic aquatic stadium. This is the scene in Baja. If you have been with

:03:58. > :04:01.us, you will have enjoyed every single moment. Four gold medals to

:04:02. > :04:05.be won this evening and this wonderful venue could yet again

:04:06. > :04:20.witness history. You know who is back in the water.

:04:21. > :04:28.The huge gold medal to Michael Phelps, a new world record. I wonder

:04:29. > :04:39.whether we have here someone who will replace it as the greatest

:04:40. > :04:45.swimmer ever. Can Michael Phelps go eight golds in eight days? He is

:04:46. > :04:51.trying to use set swimming and Olympic history. Eight days, eight

:04:52. > :04:58.gold medals, Michael Phelps is the greatest.

:04:59. > :05:07.These are his last Olympics. He will go out as the best ever. The biggest

:05:08. > :05:22.number of Olympic medals in history. Michael Phelps is back. Swimming

:05:23. > :05:29.legend Michael Phelps is coming out of retirement. US Olympic swimmer

:05:30. > :05:34.Michael Phelps has been arrested for driving... He will not be allowed to

:05:35. > :05:41.represent the United States. He has been banned for competing from the

:05:42. > :05:47.United States that six months. Michael Phelps is heading to Rio.

:05:48. > :05:54.Rio looms ahead. Unbelievable for Michael Phelps, his 22nd Olympic

:05:55. > :05:59.gold medal. It has been amazing, over the past couple of evenings,

:06:00. > :06:00.not just about the man of steel from America but plenty of other stars in

:06:01. > :06:11.action as well. She has already won a silver medal

:06:12. > :06:18.in the 400-metre freestyle, now Jazz Carlin goes for gold in the 800

:06:19. > :06:26.metres. USA's Katie Ledecky going for her fourth gold of Rio 2016 in

:06:27. > :06:32.the final in about two hours' time. It is also the final of the 15-metre

:06:33. > :06:38.freestyle, Florent Manaudou is the reigning Olympic and world champion.

:06:39. > :06:43.Great Britain need Ben Proud to recreate the form we saw him with

:06:44. > :06:50.Commonwealth gold in 2014. You will also remember Great Britain's Fran

:06:51. > :06:56.Halsall won gold in Glasgow in the 1500 metre freestyle.

:06:57. > :07:03.Here we go, this is how we line up tonight, it is packed night at the

:07:04. > :07:07.Olympics, day one of track and field begins with the heptathlon and the

:07:08. > :07:10.battle between Jessica Ennis-Hill and Katarina Johnson-Thompson. We

:07:11. > :07:16.shall update that shortly before we see the shot put and 200 metres.

:07:17. > :07:22.Also the heat in the one men's 400 metres the women's 100 metres.

:07:23. > :07:30.Four gold medals will be decided in the pool. Jazz Carlin has made a

:07:31. > :07:34.great medal chance in the 800-metre freestyle and there is also the

:07:35. > :07:39.finals in the women's 200-metre backstroke at the men's 50-metre

:07:40. > :07:43.freestyle. How can you even be thinking of going to bed? You have

:07:44. > :07:48.to stay with us. Before the swimming action, it is now time for

:07:49. > :07:53.athletics. I kind of just fell into the heptathlon to be honest. I

:07:54. > :07:58.didn't know what it was or what I was doing but I just gave it a go.

:07:59. > :08:02.Nothing beats going out and challenging yourself every working

:08:03. > :08:06.towards something. I love how pure athletics is, especially the

:08:07. > :08:10.sprinting, just run as fast as you can to the finish line and whoever

:08:11. > :08:16.is the fastest is the winner. I often think about that moment in

:08:17. > :08:22.London. Being on the podium, knowing you are the champion, once you have

:08:23. > :08:26.got that feeling, on the podium, you want that. I want to be a successful

:08:27. > :08:31.athlete and I worked incredibly hard to believe that and I live for those

:08:32. > :08:35.moments when success is there. I just love to get back on the podium,

:08:36. > :08:37.I would love to defend my title and come away with another medal. It is

:08:38. > :08:50.what we live for. Welcome to this, the first evening

:08:51. > :08:53.session of the 2016 Rio Olympic athletics programme and if it is

:08:54. > :08:57.anything as exciting as the morning programme was, you are in for a real

:08:58. > :09:03.treat. Make sure you have your snacks, hot drinks at the ready or

:09:04. > :09:07.whatever else you fancy, it is a Friday night. Hopefully some

:09:08. > :09:15.electric athletics alongside my esteemed colleague, Paula Radcliffe,

:09:16. > :09:21.Michael Johnson and Denise... I know you were enjoying the drums and the

:09:22. > :09:25.band, it feels like this is a real athletics meet. Hopefully we will

:09:26. > :09:29.get a few more people in the stands but the energy is already pretty

:09:30. > :09:34.good. Hopefully we will see some great athletics tonight and a

:09:35. > :09:37.fantastic start to the first day of athletics. Really looking forward to

:09:38. > :09:44.the 400 metres tonight and the 100 metres women. This morning, we were

:09:45. > :09:51.discussing in David Rudisha the's 800 metres, how infrequently these

:09:52. > :09:55.days, world records come by. About 30 minutes after I said that, there

:09:56. > :10:00.was another world record. We did not see that coming. I think we saw it

:10:01. > :10:04.coming from halfway through the race but before the race, we did not

:10:05. > :10:07.because we were talking about finals in the morning and whether the girls

:10:08. > :10:11.would be able to get up for it and they certainly did that. Conditions

:10:12. > :10:15.were perfect. The real key thing was, we don't often see everyone

:10:16. > :10:23.together like that, people in shape for a Championship.

:10:24. > :10:30.It was perfect pacemaking and set it up for Almaz Ayana who blew the

:10:31. > :10:37.field apart. It was already at world-record pace at that moment and

:10:38. > :10:41.they decided to up the pace. An impressive piece of distance running

:10:42. > :10:51.will stop not just from Ayana either. We had Vivian chariot, one

:10:52. > :11:00.second out and one that had not been got at 523 years. She had to fight

:11:01. > :11:05.to get that bronze medal. I think we have something like 18 personal

:11:06. > :11:09.bests. 37 athlete starting the race. Some of the girls had no idea where

:11:10. > :11:13.they were a position wise because just trying to keep track of whether

:11:14. > :11:20.they were running the right number of laps was really complicated.

:11:21. > :11:24.Because the race also scattered, the girls were finding it difficult week

:11:25. > :11:28.into the high jump. In the end, it didn't matter because we had a

:11:29. > :11:32.spectacular high jump competition, the likes of which, world-class high

:11:33. > :11:40.jumping out the heptathlon in the end, with Jess is getting off to her

:11:41. > :11:46.usual start in the hurdles, the top three is so tantalising. The

:11:47. > :11:48.pendulum is swinging in favour of Katarina Johnson-Thompson and

:11:49. > :11:53.Jessica Ennis-Hill but the competition is over. Tonight will be

:11:54. > :11:59.interesting. We have the shot put coming up, the 200 metres, both

:12:00. > :12:03.favour, I would say Jess for the shot, maybe we could see a duel in

:12:04. > :12:10.that 200. A thrilling high jump competition. Those high jumpers of

:12:11. > :12:15.the women would probably be pleased with that in their qualifications.

:12:16. > :12:19.It was tremendous. The thing about these ladies, they often are

:12:20. > :12:23.smashing the personal bests in competition because they are so

:12:24. > :12:30.frequently doing events together. Let's have a look at the personal

:12:31. > :12:33.best of the two British contenders KJT and Jessica Ennis-Hill because

:12:34. > :12:40.if they performed the PBs, the points they required would be huge.

:12:41. > :12:46.But at the moment, APB for Johnson-Thompson, not so much for

:12:47. > :12:50.Ennis-Hill yet. Denise did predictions this morning on the

:12:51. > :12:54.basis of the strength of the various events and it really came down to an

:12:55. > :12:59.800 for you? I think it could potentially but a lot hinges on the

:13:00. > :13:06.two throws the Katarina. She needs to throw close to her personal best.

:13:07. > :13:10.We have seen her throw 11 metres in big competitions. That is not going

:13:11. > :13:16.to be good enough. She needs to be up there, close to that 13, 14-metre

:13:17. > :13:21.shot put. There's nothing in it for the 200 metres at all but that

:13:22. > :13:24.caution that I think Jessica will have overnight is really significant

:13:25. > :13:29.because then we come back with the Longdon tomorrow and that pendulum

:13:30. > :13:31.swings back to Katarina and Jess has to be back to her personal best. It

:13:32. > :13:46.is thrilling. Normal service should resume

:13:47. > :13:49.overnight and it should be Brits on top of that leaderboard overnight.

:13:50. > :13:54.Let's go down to the track because it is a 1500 metres women's eats

:13:55. > :14:00.about to get underway and Steve Cram is calling the first of these. It is

:14:01. > :14:04.always intriguing the way the tactics go on the 1500 metres, it is

:14:05. > :14:07.so difficult to get through the heat and to navigate them and make sure

:14:08. > :14:12.you are not the running for a fastest time or fastest loser's time

:14:13. > :14:23.and you have vested interest in this? Steve Cram : Laura Weightman

:14:24. > :14:28.will be going. The heat can be tricky at times even know you think

:14:29. > :14:32.on paper OK, top six. 42 entrance and I think at least 30 of them

:14:33. > :14:34.think they will get to the final and we have the big names in each of

:14:35. > :14:43.these. Brenda Martinez wanted to be in the

:14:44. > :14:54.800 metres but didn't make it through the American trials.

:14:55. > :15:01.Google talk about her in the second. What an interesting year it has been

:15:02. > :15:05.for her. What we have in store from her? Not sure, the world record

:15:06. > :15:11.holder last carried everything before her. This year, she has had a

:15:12. > :15:16.troubled preparation which I will come back to. That is a very good

:15:17. > :15:25.young talent, the European junior cross-country champion from Germany,

:15:26. > :15:31.Maureen Koster. -- Maureen Koster from the Netherlands.

:15:32. > :15:39.Linden Hall of Australia has made a big improvement in 2016. But this is

:15:40. > :15:44.somebody who could well be a threat, certainly the Laura Muir's chances

:15:45. > :15:47.of a medal, the Polish athlete, who has been in great form on the

:15:48. > :15:54.circuit. The Kenyans also have always been difficult. A familiar

:15:55. > :15:58.figure from Serbia on the inside. There are 14 athletes in each of the

:15:59. > :16:04.three heats. The top six will go through. I would say probably heat

:16:05. > :16:09.two is the toughest. This one is not so easy. And the Laura Muir is

:16:10. > :16:12.probably delighted, because apart from anything else, there are six

:16:13. > :16:19.fastest losers to advance as well. They have a bit of an advantage.

:16:20. > :16:24.Away we go, three and three quarters laps as normal. A few more people in

:16:25. > :16:29.the stadium tonight, and atmosphere being created. Paula Radcliffe has

:16:30. > :16:36.raised down from the studio to be alongside me. In Debbie Dibaba,

:16:37. > :16:40.let's talk about her. Her coach is caught up in an investigation, was

:16:41. > :16:46.arrested in Spain, he is not here in Brazil, but she has had her own

:16:47. > :16:51.problems, she has only raced once in 1500s. It hasn't been the sort of

:16:52. > :16:55.preparation she would have liked. No it hasn't, on any front, she picked

:16:56. > :17:01.up a toe injury which prevented her making a debut and raising the

:17:02. > :17:05.10,000 metres earlier in the year, but she came back and front 359. She

:17:06. > :17:11.definitely has been affected by the turmoil that has gone on. I think it

:17:12. > :17:20.was in the coach's route that the drugs were found, he did not come

:17:21. > :17:23.out. -- room. We know that the track goes well for distance racing, we

:17:24. > :17:32.saw that in the 10,000 metres this morning. But so far, this has gone

:17:33. > :17:38.out very, very pedestrian. Somebody in here needs to get up front and

:17:39. > :17:43.take this on. Is it going to be somebody like the world junior

:17:44. > :17:48.champion, of 3000 metres, who really took the race apart and worked hard

:17:49. > :17:52.to get a bronze medal. Very slow with three of 400 metres, really

:17:53. > :18:00.picked up a bit now. The young German is very strong. Her best is

:18:01. > :18:06.1500 this year, 406, many people are much quicker than that. Carol

:18:07. > :18:13.McGiffin has got a good kick, she won't be too disappointed. Brenda

:18:14. > :18:20.Martinez has got a very good kick. The barber comes through. Two laps

:18:21. > :18:27.to go. -- in Debbie Dibaba. Costa moves out in the orange. Dibaba is

:18:28. > :18:31.just checking there, she is pushing and shoving in the red of Morocco.

:18:32. > :18:36.They are all panicking now. They will start to panic. If you give

:18:37. > :18:41.people the danger of falling down on not being able to progress, it

:18:42. > :18:44.becomes greater and greater. The likes of Brenda Martinez in there,

:18:45. > :18:49.we saw what happened in the 800 metres in the US trials, she had to

:18:50. > :18:54.come back and read the 1500 metres here, she really wants to be out of

:18:55. > :18:59.trouble. -- and race in the 1500 metres. Costa has started to move

:19:00. > :19:06.up. The pace needs to string out to get the race running more safely.

:19:07. > :19:11.Costa, the 19-year-old from Germany. Linden Hall of Australia tucked on

:19:12. > :19:24.the inside. Stelling worth following Koser. -- Koster. Six to go through.

:19:25. > :19:26.Koster moving up on the outside, very quick over the last 400 metres.

:19:27. > :19:37.She gets back inside as well. Still plenty in with a chance of

:19:38. > :19:42.getting in the top six. Goes there be Dibaba changes gear with 300

:19:43. > :19:49.metres to go. This will be a side to see what she can do. A gap appears

:19:50. > :20:01.very, very quickly. They decided not to chase it. 200m to go. Dibaba

:20:02. > :20:08.reading, they are scrapping for the top six places. Stelling worth, the

:20:09. > :20:14.Canadian, is in seventh place. A lot of people passing in the home

:20:15. > :20:20.straight. Dibaba easing away here. Koster trying to hang on, Brenda

:20:21. > :20:25.Martinez on the outside. It is going to be close for the top six.

:20:26. > :20:34.Four in a row, Stelling worth loses out. A time of 410. Stelling worth

:20:35. > :20:43.412. The others don't know what to do. Go on, Dibaba, she stretched

:20:44. > :20:47.out, she didn't go hard all of the last hundred but it was enough. She

:20:48. > :20:52.doesn't look to me like she was in the shape she was when we saw the

:20:53. > :20:55.350 in Monaco last year, she doesn't have the change of pace which was

:20:56. > :20:59.setting her miles apart from the rest of the field. She reacted, the

:21:00. > :21:05.others were slower to react and cheap bulk up the gap. McGinn held

:21:06. > :21:09.it for a little while -- to build up the gap. I was glad to see that

:21:10. > :21:12.Koster made it because she was the only one prepared to take that and

:21:13. > :21:16.put that working. It is going to be a bit of a nervous wait now for

:21:17. > :21:23.Hillary Stelling worth, finishing the first of the fastest losers. She

:21:24. > :21:27.should be with six. The advantage definitely goes to the leaders.

:21:28. > :21:32.Definitely a class apart, Dibaba, when you look at it from that angle.

:21:33. > :21:37.Is she doing more what she needed to do? She hasn't raced that much going

:21:38. > :21:41.in, she probably wants to get a bit of a test out there. McGinn

:21:42. > :21:46.finishing well behind, she didn't need to finish as fast as she did,

:21:47. > :21:49.but given the band of four quickly closing on her she was keeping

:21:50. > :21:54.herself out of trouble, jacking up at the screen looks pretty

:21:55. > :22:02.comfortable. -- checking up. She looked comfortable enough. I've seen

:22:03. > :22:06.her go quicker, but she's thinking, why bother now? It is just the

:22:07. > :22:08.heats. McGinn is looking good indeed. A blanket finish for the

:22:09. > :22:22.four. Katarina Johnson-Thompson will go

:22:23. > :22:26.ninth in the shot putt. The women heptathlete get three goes on the

:22:27. > :22:32.shot put. Jessica Ennis-Hill is in a different pool to KJT. Of course,

:22:33. > :22:36.these women are supreme athletes, but they throw a lot shorter

:22:37. > :22:39.distances than the elite shot putters, who we will see later on in

:22:40. > :22:43.the women's final, one of whom, Valerie Adams, is going for her

:22:44. > :22:46.third consecutive Olympic gold. To do that, she will have to throw

:22:47. > :22:53.something over 20 metres. And obviously we will be thinking, hang

:22:54. > :23:00.on a minute, these girls offering, 13, 14, 15, why can't they not show

:23:01. > :23:02.that bit? -- are throwing. They are not there specialists, is only so

:23:03. > :23:09.much time in the week that you can train. Cat, with all her height and

:23:10. > :23:14.power that she does include, you know, she can hide long jump well,

:23:15. > :23:21.she doesn't use her legs efficiently in the circle. And that results in

:23:22. > :23:28.just higher not using that power. She's a 13, 14, PB. This is Valerie

:23:29. > :23:30.Adams of New Zealand. You have to be exclusive to expose of

:23:31. > :23:36.out-of-the-box. It catapults out of her hand. But all comes from this

:23:37. > :23:40.action -- you have to be explosive out-of-the-box. She drives back the

:23:41. > :23:45.leg, she tries to hold onto it as long as possible, keeping the weight

:23:46. > :23:50.behind the shot. The launch it out, Katarina does not do that. She is

:23:51. > :23:55.almost upright out of the back. Therefore she is not able to use her

:23:56. > :23:59.legs and more important hips. I would say she learns those basic

:24:00. > :24:01.things using those legs, keeping that shot behind her, she can find

:24:02. > :24:11.easily another 1.5 metres. Go Jess of course is better, she is up

:24:12. > :24:16.there as one of the stronger shot put us in the field but still not

:24:17. > :24:20.anywhere near her best event. -- shot putters. Let's look at the

:24:21. > :24:26.difference in technique. Jessica is five foot five. You know, what she

:24:27. > :24:32.does with her body, the good mechanics, gives you great results.

:24:33. > :24:39.We've said that, 1479, that is really, really good for her. For her

:24:40. > :24:44.physique and power. Yes, but she uses her legs and hips. That allows

:24:45. > :24:48.her to arrive in the correct position here. The foot is

:24:49. > :24:52.underneath her hips, she uses her hips right there, a little bit, you

:24:53. > :24:58.know, little bit open, possibly, but she uses her legs effectively and

:24:59. > :25:02.stays behind the shot and it gives her a better result. We will keep

:25:03. > :25:06.you up to speed with how they are doing. But don't expect this to be

:25:07. > :25:12.one of Katarina Johnson-Thompson's high-scoring events. Steve?

:25:13. > :25:18.Thanks, Gaby. Setting up nicely this shot put, the third event of the

:25:19. > :25:26.heptathlon. Jessica Ennis-Hill waiting for her turn. First chance

:25:27. > :25:32.to release the four kilo shot. He has chewed a lot of gum today! Tense

:25:33. > :25:36.moments through the high jump. Giving nothing away. They've worked

:25:37. > :25:42.hard, trained in Barcelona, chose not to join the team. Here in Brazil

:25:43. > :25:50.until late on. Spent time with her son, Reggie. Performed well so far,

:25:51. > :25:52.but, boy, has she got her hands full with her team-mate Katarina

:25:53. > :25:58.Johnson-Thompson, she is a better shot putter. The reigning champion

:25:59. > :25:59.settles in this, the first round of the shot put. Something over 40

:26:00. > :26:11.metres would be ideal. -- 14. Just separate on that, shy of 14, a

:26:12. > :26:18.tentative start from Jess Ennis, somewhere around 1350, maybe. But it

:26:19. > :26:23.is a mark. Athletes get three attempts. She goes one way, the shot

:26:24. > :26:27.goes another, and there is a lot of force but wasted that for me. She

:26:28. > :26:35.can correct that thou, she has got a marking. Slightly tense look on her

:26:36. > :26:44.face. 1344. OK. That is a start. She will want more, though.

:26:45. > :26:51.So, onto the second of three heats. The first round of the women's 1500

:26:52. > :26:57.metres. Not the easiest certainly of the three heats. Six go through

:26:58. > :27:00.automatically, three have quicker times this season, three or four

:27:01. > :27:01.under not due far away, some big names in there. There is the

:27:02. > :27:08.line-up. Jenny Simpson is in there. There are

:27:09. > :27:22.those big names. Jenny Blundell, the fast improving

:27:23. > :27:26.Australian. Very, very quick athletes in there. There is Jenny

:27:27. > :27:32.Simpson, the US champion this year, while champion five years ago. --

:27:33. > :27:37.world champion. A few seconds down on her best. The quickest in the

:27:38. > :27:47.world this year, unbeaten this season, won Diamond league races in

:27:48. > :27:51.Shanghai and Oslo. Hassan last year looks outstanding, maybe not quite

:27:52. > :27:56.as quick this year, but still superb and good enough to take the indoor

:27:57. > :28:00.title. She came second to Laura Muir in London in that great race. A

:28:01. > :28:05.great change of gears, she might sit at the back earlier on and ease her

:28:06. > :28:10.way through. Nicky Hamlin, born and raised in Dorset. There is Laura

:28:11. > :28:14.Weightman. Had a great spell in 2014, took silver in the

:28:15. > :28:20.Commonwealth Games, bronze in the Europeans. And running strongly

:28:21. > :28:26.again. And she runs at her bust. She should move through Constable Ian.

:28:27. > :28:31.There is one of the Olympic refugee team, she fled the conflict in South

:28:32. > :28:37.Sudan and now training in Kenya. But wait until the line, three and three

:28:38. > :28:41.quarters laps of the track, the second of the heats of the women's

:28:42. > :28:45.1600 metres. Laura Muir to come in the next eight. The first teams,

:28:46. > :28:50.crucially, they will have seen that it was slow. Six fastest losers to

:28:51. > :28:54.go through over the three heats. If they make it brisk enough they have

:28:55. > :29:01.got a far, far better chance. Laura Weightman just checking. It can be a

:29:02. > :29:05.little bit ragged -- she can be a little bit ragged, the talented

:29:06. > :29:12.Ethiopian. Jenny Simpson sitting in second or third place at the moment

:29:13. > :29:17.behind Blundell. There is great talent in this race. A very strong

:29:18. > :29:23.third round. Laura Weightman put herself in a good position. You

:29:24. > :29:27.forget it with Laura, but she is very experienced these days, eight

:29:28. > :29:31.in the Olympic Games four years ago, Commonwealth Games medallist,

:29:32. > :29:34.European games medals. Unfortunate accident last year at the World

:29:35. > :29:39.Championships when she fell over the finish line and hit her head on the

:29:40. > :29:43.track, she wasn't able to continue. Here she is back in an opportunity

:29:44. > :29:46.for her to move into the semifinal. And now the race is beginning to

:29:47. > :29:49.move a little. Laura Weightman stretching down the back straight,

:29:50. > :29:54.looking comfortable but she has got to be aware from this race. Hassan

:29:55. > :29:58.in the orange vest of the Netherlands, right at the back.

:29:59. > :29:59.Watch her get ready to make a move. Saddo is going to be a bit of a

:30:00. > :30:09.danger. -- Saddam. The Kenyan, the fastest in the

:30:10. > :30:13.world, just drifting towards the front. She will find has of

:30:14. > :30:19.alongside the leaders very soon. Laura running a very sensible race.

:30:20. > :30:22.You can always see that it looks quicker, it looks a little bit

:30:23. > :30:31.quicker than the first, the women in a good position.

:30:32. > :30:36.Kipyegon got clipped a little bit and moves her way out around

:30:37. > :30:40.Blundell and moves to the front out of danger. Saddou is there. Hassan

:30:41. > :30:46.is at the backs, staying out of danger. She is steadying herself,

:30:47. > :30:50.but she will make a move, usually in the back straight she will begin to

:30:51. > :30:55.ease past everyone. But she got past a little bit again. There are plenty

:30:56. > :30:59.of athletes in here who have run very similar times this season. It

:31:00. > :31:03.could be a fierce race, the latter stages. Six to go through

:31:04. > :31:06.automatically, Weightman moving into a good position. Laura Weightman

:31:07. > :31:11.sitting on the outside, doing nicely, ready to move, and she's got

:31:12. > :31:14.to be. She's now got to hold this position, don't let anybody pass on

:31:15. > :31:20.the outside if you can possibly help it. Kipyegon in the lead looking

:31:21. > :31:25.strong and comfortable. But still, when you get those kind accidents

:31:26. > :31:29.there, a little bit a bump can cause a concertina effect. Laura is free

:31:30. > :31:32.of trouble in a good place, coming down the straight, all you've got to

:31:33. > :31:37.do Laura is run the last 300 metres as we know you can. Kipyegon is

:31:38. > :31:40.strong and good, Jenny Simpson, the more experienced American coming

:31:41. > :31:44.down the outside, now they are going to start raising. The pace begins to

:31:45. > :31:50.lift at the sound of the bell. Weightman in fifth place moving past

:31:51. > :31:55.the athlete from Colombia. Kipyegon is out in front, Saddou and Jenny

:31:56. > :31:58.Simson moving around the outside. Kipyegon hanging on. Laura Weightman

:31:59. > :32:03.trying to make a move. Hassan hasn't made a move at all yet, moving from

:32:04. > :32:08.the back as of now, coming down the back straight, starting the close.

:32:09. > :32:13.Laura Weightman really has a battle. There goes Hassan in the orange

:32:14. > :32:14.vest. Past Laura Weightman. Laura has got too many in front of her,

:32:15. > :32:25.she has got to dig deep. the second the six, seven in front

:32:26. > :32:36.of her and Laura Weightman starts kick in. Hassan making her move.

:32:37. > :32:43.There are six, seven there, Laura Weightman having to dig for her

:32:44. > :32:48.time. Jenny Simpson." Row across the line and Laura Weightman down in

:32:49. > :32:56.seventh place. A quicker heat than previously. It is all about clock

:32:57. > :33:00.watching for Laura Weightman. It certainly is. She struggled in the

:33:01. > :33:05.back straight for a moment and Hassan came flying past and thought

:33:06. > :33:14.that was the chance for her before that but that was a fast last lap. A

:33:15. > :33:20.strong, powerful run. Jenny Simpson qualified strongly. We will have to

:33:21. > :33:30.wait to see what happens in the last heat. First of six fastest losers

:33:31. > :33:35.and there they go. Here comes Hassan who hasn't been anywhere near it so

:33:36. > :33:39.far. Sadly accelerating. This was the point when I thought Laura

:33:40. > :33:43.should try to go with her but there wasn't any response. Into the home

:33:44. > :33:48.straight, six athletes ahead of Laura Weightman. As I'm getting

:33:49. > :34:02.better. Jenny Simpson coming strongly. The Ethiopian athletes,

:34:03. > :34:06.drifting. The Moroccan runner, running a big season's best to take

:34:07. > :34:07.one of the automatic qualifying places. Weightman couldn't quite get

:34:08. > :34:20.there. Laura Weightman closing down the

:34:21. > :34:36.onside to but we know at the moment, she is the fastest of the losers.

:34:37. > :34:41.She has to wait, a little bit off it, a little bit of strain in the

:34:42. > :34:44.back straight. She could have pulled it on to Hassan but she's now

:34:45. > :34:49.downstairs and will explain it to us.

:34:50. > :34:55.Laura, you said you felt you should have qualified for that race but it

:34:56. > :35:02.is a waiting game. I should get through in that time. It is a messy

:35:03. > :35:06.race. I put myself in a few bad position so it is partly my own

:35:07. > :35:12.fault. Got pushed around a bit. Hopefully that puts me through. We

:35:13. > :35:17.saw you reach the final in 2012 and since then, you have won medals.

:35:18. > :35:21.What is the biggest difference between you now and then? I am four

:35:22. > :35:26.you stronger and more experienced and that is a massive difference

:35:27. > :35:31.coming through the rounds. I am staying confident I will get in that

:35:32. > :35:36.semifinal. Do you go and look at that next race or keep your head

:35:37. > :35:39.down until you know the result? I think it should be enough to get me

:35:40. > :35:46.through, I'm not going to stress too much. I know I am in good shape. I

:35:47. > :35:49.probably made it look a bit too hard but everything is all right and

:35:50. > :35:53.fingers crossed I will be all right and move on to the semifinal. All

:35:54. > :36:00.the best. We hope we see you in the semis.

:36:01. > :36:06.Katarina Johnson-Thompson is in the other pool to Jessica Ennis-Hill.

:36:07. > :36:11.This is damage limitation time for her now. She needs a throw ideally

:36:12. > :36:22.beyond or close to 30 metres. This is what she has done this year. Add

:36:23. > :36:28.a dreadful shot before. Left foot never came down. That is way down.

:36:29. > :36:33.We saw her warm up quite nicely. That is a foul, she fell out of the

:36:34. > :36:36.front by the look of it. It is a foul in the first round for Katarina

:36:37. > :36:51.Johnson-Thompson. Two those remaining.

:36:52. > :36:59.We have one nonstarter in this from the United Arab Emirates. Not sure

:37:00. > :37:03.all 13 of these are good enough. We have one from east Timor and a

:37:04. > :37:12.couple of others who would struggle to run. Round about 4.7, 4.8. I

:37:13. > :37:15.think Laura Weightman is more confident than me about fastest

:37:16. > :37:31.losers. We have an early leader. Laura Muir content to sit at the

:37:32. > :37:38.back. She has been in dominant form. Both Laura s have been up preparing

:37:39. > :37:42.part of the injury squad. Biggest endurance squad we have ever had in

:37:43. > :37:47.the Olympic Games, certainly for a long time, so it has been good to

:37:48. > :37:50.see. Lauro looking to get through there. She will be looking to keep

:37:51. > :37:55.out of trouble in these first few laps. We saw a marvellous

:37:56. > :38:00.performance by Laura Muir in the anniversary games. She won that

:38:01. > :38:05.event. Hassan was the world indoor champion this year and Laura Muir

:38:06. > :38:10.coming to this event was renewed confidence. When she broke Kelly

:38:11. > :38:14.Holmes' record, she was staggered herself. Kelly said last night she

:38:15. > :38:18.is looking forward to seeing Laura Muir, not particularly tonight

:38:19. > :38:24.because she thinks this is no more than a formality, but it isn't. You

:38:25. > :38:28.have to go and get there and get in the first six. She is running so

:38:29. > :38:31.confidently. When you are good and strong and you have just run a

:38:32. > :38:35.personal best, when you are just beating the record by the great

:38:36. > :38:40.Kelly Holmes, you can afford to run with confidence here at the back of

:38:41. > :38:44.the group and that means, I am controlling this, you can do what

:38:45. > :38:49.you want to do but eventually, I will be joining you. Two laps to go,

:38:50. > :38:59.Laura Bjork will now start taking closer order. Fasth Laura Muir.

:39:00. > :39:05.There are 11 people in this group and the pace they are going, all 11

:39:06. > :39:12.could qualify which would make Laura Weightman the 12th qualifier...

:39:13. > :39:18.Sorry we have six fastest losers, it is just the pace they are going.

:39:19. > :39:24.Barter took a bit of a stumble. All these could go through if they work

:39:25. > :39:33.together but Laura Muir is not bothered about that, she has gone

:39:34. > :39:40.straight to the front. A good young Ethiopian youngster following Laura

:39:41. > :39:44.Muir. The way she strode down the back straight, the power she showed

:39:45. > :39:50.when she was doing that, the confidence she exudes today, it is a

:39:51. > :39:54.new Laura Muir. I think we are ready to see even better things from her.

:39:55. > :39:59.She will come down and hear the bell and at this point, it is about

:40:00. > :40:03.concentration. We know she is strong and fast enough and she has got the

:40:04. > :40:11.power to drive at any point but we know that any athlete has to

:40:12. > :40:17.concentrate now. 300 metres to go, three laps. They can keep going at

:40:18. > :40:27.this pace but they will be a bit of a threat to Laura Weightman but

:40:28. > :40:35.Laura Muir looks impressive. Top six to go through but all 11 can

:40:36. > :40:38.actually go through. Zoe Buchmann trying to come ready outside, the

:40:39. > :40:48.Australian trying to get round the Moroccan. Barter coming wide as

:40:49. > :40:54.well. Laura Muir let's Sion move away. Top six definitely going

:40:55. > :41:02.through but given the clock, anything under 4.8 and they will all

:41:03. > :41:07.go through. A couple of others at the back will have to wait and see

:41:08. > :41:17.but no problems for Laura Muir. Both Laura Muir and Laura Weightman

:41:18. > :41:23.qualifying. All of the big names through. No real surprises there for

:41:24. > :41:27.me. Didn't really learn a lot but everyone gets nervous in semifinals

:41:28. > :41:34.of people falling over. Laura let her do that. She did but that was

:41:35. > :41:38.impressive by Laura Muir. It is a new confidence when you are running

:41:39. > :41:45.as well as she is. Allowing the race to run away. Obviously, you would

:41:46. > :41:48.like to be next to her but Laura Muir is just relaxing. She so

:41:49. > :41:53.impressive this year, I think she will have great chances in the next

:41:54. > :42:04.few days. The coach said she was Mowatt nervous than her. -- more

:42:05. > :42:06.nervous than her. That is the six but Laura Muir more impressive than

:42:07. > :42:17.any other in that one. Brendan talking commentary about how

:42:18. > :42:22.good a season you have had and how in control you are? I just wanted to

:42:23. > :42:26.get the job done. To be at the front, I wanted to make sure I

:42:27. > :42:33.wasn't boxed in and I will just rest up ahead of the semis. How high is

:42:34. > :42:39.your confidence? To finish on that race, you couldn't have hoped to

:42:40. > :42:42.anything better. I suppose you can't get ahead of yourself, people are

:42:43. > :42:46.talking about you contending for a medal but you have to negotiate

:42:47. > :42:52.these rounds so what kind of mindset you have to get in? Just taking it

:42:53. > :42:57.one round as it comes. My focus is now on the semis and once I get to

:42:58. > :43:09.the final, I will focus on that. We wish you well, well done.

:43:10. > :43:24.Nafissatou Thiam. That is a big throw. She has produced two

:43:25. > :43:29.fantastic performances so far in the hurdles and the high jump. She

:43:30. > :43:36.really got on to that, you can see the look on her face, it is over 14

:43:37. > :43:40.metres. Jessica Ennis-Hill was just under 14 metres. It will be

:43:41. > :43:54.measured. That could take her into the lead.

:43:55. > :43:58.Eaton, the Canadian has been solid so far without being fantastic. The

:43:59. > :44:06.first round effort, just beyond 30 metres. Her lifetime best, 13.7 one.

:44:07. > :44:12.She is reliable, consistent. I wonder whether she has got the

:44:13. > :44:32.firepower to challenge the Brits and Nafissatou Thiam. Waiting for her

:44:33. > :44:40.measurements, it is 13.36. Jessica Ennis-Hill in round two of the shot

:44:41. > :44:46.put. 13.44 was her opener. She can let loose now. She has thrown over

:44:47. > :44:51.14 metres in the past. Just came away from that as well, elbow

:44:52. > :44:58.dropped, it is below 40 metres again. She threw 13.73 en Route 28

:44:59. > :45:02.gold medal at the World Championships last year. You just

:45:03. > :45:09.see it going out sideways from her neck there. One throw to improve on

:45:10. > :45:17.that first round effort. No improvement in the second round.

:45:18. > :45:20.Katarina Johnson-Thompson. Round two after a foul, has to get mark here,

:45:21. > :45:40.no messing about. She has, well, produced a beautiful

:45:41. > :45:51.high jump. She is in the lead, but she is going to get swallowed up if

:45:52. > :45:55.she doesn't improve on that mark. She will be happy it is a market 11,

:45:56. > :46:06.down on what she needs. Warner throw remaining. -- Warner throw.

:46:07. > :46:15.16 through to the semifinals, the quickest team with Rhodri and Niwa.

:46:16. > :46:18.The fastest losers came from heat two and three. Laura Weightman goes

:46:19. > :46:36.through as the fastest loser. 16 in total, those semifinals, as

:46:37. > :46:44.Laura Muir alluded to, will be difficult.

:46:45. > :46:46.STUDIO: Let's have a look at close detail, you and the ways both

:46:47. > :47:03.athletes. But have a little look in close

:47:04. > :47:06.detail at this shotput is. Because you analysed both athletes,

:47:07. > :47:08.Jessica Ennis-Hill and Katarina Johnson-Thompson,

:47:09. > :47:10.and compare them to the very elite, the best of the best

:47:11. > :47:12.in Valerie Adams. What you showed earlier,

:47:13. > :47:14.Katarina Johnson-Thompson has thrown worse and her

:47:15. > :47:16.technique has been poorer. What you think is going on with her,

:47:17. > :47:19.she is down on her personal best I'm not sure what is going on,

:47:20. > :47:24.but I'm sure the break has something to do with it,

:47:25. > :47:26.I'm sure there is something just by misfiring, they are not

:47:27. > :47:29.particular tired, so that is hard, Jess is not throwing

:47:30. > :47:31.what we normally would expect to see, she is a 14-metre

:47:32. > :47:36.throw at worst. So technically, she is just

:47:37. > :47:38.mis-firing out of her hands, we talked about the separation

:47:39. > :47:47.between her body and the shot, at this point she is just

:47:48. > :47:49.opening up our arm, to go out at an angle,

:47:50. > :47:53.shows she is losing distance. But also she did not get her right

:47:54. > :48:09.leg underneath her, which you really do need to get

:48:10. > :48:12.the impetus through the shot. She will be really

:48:13. > :48:14.disappointed with that. Katarina Johnson-Thompson

:48:15. > :48:16.with a foul on her first throw, and then her body in her second

:48:17. > :48:19.throw, had technique appeared to be all over the place really,

:48:20. > :48:21.she did not seem to have At the moment you can imagine

:48:22. > :48:28.what is going through her head. I can't mess up, so easily

:48:29. > :48:33.she could have three fouls in the shotput, and that

:48:34. > :48:39.would be a disaster. I think she was just

:48:40. > :48:43.very cautious there, she just needed to get one in,

:48:44. > :48:46.technically it is not 11.68, not using her legs again,

:48:47. > :48:56.throwing is about the legs, whether it is javelin,

:48:57. > :48:58.hammer or shot, they need They have got three left,

:48:59. > :49:04.and hopefully they can give it 400 metre heats coming

:49:05. > :49:09.up next on the track, Michael Johnson, are

:49:10. > :49:10.you excited about that? 400 was arguably the final

:49:11. > :49:13.of the World Championships last Yes, and it will live up

:49:14. > :49:18.to the same heights. This year has shaped up to be

:49:19. > :49:22.a fantastic year for the 400 metres, I know who is going to win

:49:23. > :49:28.the medals, I believe, but the order could be any way,

:49:29. > :49:31.so when we get under way here today, the world champion

:49:32. > :49:36.in the last championships. Will we see a top three

:49:37. > :49:40.under 44 in the final? I think we could, we very well

:49:41. > :49:48.covered. -- well covered. There are a couple of people

:49:49. > :49:51.who have run -- well covered. This is one we will see it,

:49:52. > :49:55.at this early round, it will get some of the kinks out,

:49:56. > :49:58.it has been a few weeks since they have race,

:49:59. > :50:00.it will be interesting to see. Fitzroy Dunkley, second

:50:01. > :50:04.in the Jamaican championships, just outside, was Gil Roberts,

:50:05. > :50:07.there is Cedenio of Trinidad Tobago, two hundredths

:50:08. > :50:13.inside the British He ran a personal best behind Wayde

:50:14. > :50:27.van Niekerk. There is the European champion,

:50:28. > :50:42.he has a bit of an Achilles injury obviously something to be

:50:43. > :50:46.concerned about. The Borlee siblings will all

:50:47. > :51:08.be in these Olympics. The first of seven heats

:51:09. > :51:15.in the men's 400 metres. Cleanly away, three to go

:51:16. > :51:17.through automatically, plus the next fastest

:51:18. > :51:22.three to the semifinals. Roberts making great

:51:23. > :51:23.progress, pulling away Roberts is a powerful runner,

:51:24. > :51:33.just settling back into things, things even in up a little bit more,

:51:34. > :51:36.it is quite even between Cedenio looking strong

:51:37. > :51:59.and looking smooth. Roberts using all the power on the

:52:00. > :52:00.outside. Three to go through automatically.

:52:01. > :52:07.Cedenio takes it, bowing to the line, 44.99, Roberts takes

:52:08. > :52:09.second, inside 45 seconds, but I think he gave that

:52:10. > :52:15.pretty much everything, Cedenio, he was not easing up,

:52:16. > :52:18.he was tying up a little bit, Cedenio, I am Cedenio,

:52:19. > :52:22.Roberts went out very quickly, but just eased through the middle

:52:23. > :52:25.of the race and had to work quite hard towards the end, but three

:52:26. > :52:27.to go through automatically, and Gill Roberts and

:52:28. > :52:38.He runs a very smart race, Cedenio, the Kenyan goes quickly

:52:39. > :52:48.backwards in lane one, but Cedenio could see everybody,

:52:49. > :52:52.and really moves through, it is not always easy in lane two

:52:53. > :52:59.but the others have gone out quickly, you can see him just easing

:53:00. > :53:05.around this top bend, and all of a sudden on the home

:53:06. > :53:10.He has had a great season so far, Cedenio, the big three other

:53:11. > :53:14.favourites to win the medals, and there are one of two really good

:53:15. > :53:17.new talents coming through - this guy is only 20 years of age,

:53:18. > :53:19.just struggling a little towards the end, reaching

:53:20. > :53:21.to the line, not like Roberts, Roberts looking across,

:53:22. > :53:39.Only three fastest losers over the seven heats. Kevin Bony may

:53:40. > :53:58.struggle. -- Olly. It is all going on around her at the

:53:59. > :54:05.moment. Looking to improve on that first round from hearing the second

:54:06. > :54:16.round. Quick with the feet, as ever. Around a similar sort of mark.

:54:17. > :54:22.She seemed very consistent, but didn't convince me that she can drop

:54:23. > :54:28.the hammer and out there. It is all she can do to fight off the Brits.

:54:29. > :54:38.Thiam, wonderful effort so far. A slight improvement, 13-45.

:54:39. > :54:41.Jessica Ennis-Hill has had two throws already in the 13 metres,

:54:42. > :54:46.she needs something beyond 14, she is capable of it,

:54:47. > :54:49.14 metres plus, please, Jessica Ennis-Hill, it is on the 14

:54:50. > :54:59.Her head in her hands, she knows that is not quite

:55:00. > :55:18.It is the best of her three attempts.

:55:19. > :55:20.But it is over for Jessica Ennis-Hill.

:55:21. > :55:34.14-41 in that first round, carrying those two lifetime bests in the

:55:35. > :55:35.first two events. That is better, that is very much

:55:36. > :55:40.better, that is close to 15 metres, and Thiam is absolutely putting

:55:41. > :55:45.together a brilliant first day, it is going to be a huge first

:55:46. > :55:58.score, first-day score, her 200 metres maybe not the likes

:55:59. > :56:02.of Enniss Hill and Johnson-Thomson, But look at her reaction. And what

:56:03. > :56:11.it means to her. 14.91, that will take

:56:12. > :56:15.the lead overall after Look at the start list

:56:16. > :56:23.of this second heat, the British athlete had to withdraw,

:56:24. > :56:30.he will be in the relay, we are told, here is

:56:31. > :56:36.the starting this for heat two. Only Mark Rooney and Matt

:56:37. > :56:56.Hudson-Smith to go in this round. Laying two has started very quickly.

:56:57. > :57:20.-- lane two. The 18-year-old from Botswana is a

:57:21. > :57:24.massive talent, he is leading. This only is the top three Mac, don't

:57:25. > :57:32.forget. At the moment, the top two big names. Taplin is gliding

:57:33. > :57:36.through. The youngster moving through into the third spot,

:57:37. > :57:42.finishing well. Just easing up off the line. He gives his guys a slap,

:57:43. > :58:01.they are big fives. Very comfortable in the end, the

:58:02. > :58:06.look of a man at ease. Not quite the quality of some of the other heats,

:58:07. > :58:10.but Taplin did what he had to do and eased down, conserved vital energy,

:58:11. > :58:16.that was very, very comfortable from Taplin.

:58:17. > :58:27.Katarina Johnson-Thompson has won the final attempt in this third

:58:28. > :58:33.event, the shot put. She has Thiam in the consecutive pole to her

:58:34. > :58:37.right, through that huge effort, 14-91. Johnson-Thompson's best so

:58:38. > :58:43.far, she needs something over 12 metres here. Oh, no, she has spun

:58:44. > :58:49.out of that again. That was not good, and she knows it. That is an

:58:50. > :58:54.absolute mess. She would be better doing a standing throw. I have to

:58:55. > :58:58.say, she just does look a completely different athlete to what we saw in

:58:59. > :59:04.the high dump. The look in her eyes, she is just lost. -- high jump. Her

:59:05. > :59:05.third attempt has unravelled what was a really good start to this

:59:06. > :59:15.heptathlon. No improvement. STUDIO: Greg Rutherford is in the

:59:16. > :59:19.stadium, the men's long jump qualification coming up in five

:59:20. > :59:22.minutes time also. The defending Olympic champion, world champion,

:59:23. > :59:30.European Commonwealth Games champion, he has won it all.

:59:31. > :59:38.It is a process of feelings as opposed to mental processes. You get

:59:39. > :59:43.into a rhythm, as you are accelerating down the runway, it is

:59:44. > :59:49.all up here. Your mind is just doing what needs to be done in order to

:59:50. > :59:54.jump as high as you possibly can. Could you ever have imagined that we

:59:55. > :59:57.would have a night like this? That gold medal changed everything, it

:59:58. > :00:02.gave me that belief that actually yes I can win championships, if

:00:03. > :00:07.everything went well I thought there was a chance. Greg Rutherford is the

:00:08. > :00:15.Olympic champion. Going from somebody new nobody knew at all to

:00:16. > :00:19.the guys who won the gold medal, it is fantastic, I'm very happy to be

:00:20. > :00:24.remembered as the ginger guy, that's great! Whateley night! When I meet

:00:25. > :00:29.somebody for the first time, a lot of people tell me where they were

:00:30. > :00:32.when I won. So what a night. Once you've taken gold, generally it is a

:00:33. > :00:39.good job of feeling straightaway. All through an event, you chase that

:00:40. > :00:44.one feeling of, I've got it right. I have that in London on the fourth

:00:45. > :00:49.round when I jumped 30 one. I had it in Wales. Rutherford complete his

:00:50. > :00:55.Grand Slam. Olympic Committee European, Commonwealth and world

:00:56. > :00:59.champion. Last year I was not the longest jump in the world but I was

:01:00. > :01:10.the most consistent. Consistency wins you medals.

:01:11. > :01:18.It is all about what happens in the majors. I am a massive advocate of

:01:19. > :01:23.being happy away from the track. It is the biggest thing for being good

:01:24. > :01:28.at the track. To have what I have now, a lovely little boy that I can

:01:29. > :01:33.go to after sessions and a very understanding partner who gets the

:01:34. > :01:37.fact that I'd probably have to be a selfish, angry so-and-so at times! I

:01:38. > :01:42.try to have two separate parts of me, the part of me on the track

:01:43. > :01:45.which is very serious when I'm getting the work done and are part

:01:46. > :01:52.of me at home, it is very different, I don't want to think about it, I

:01:53. > :01:55.just want to have fun with son. I am probably in a much better place than

:01:56. > :02:00.I have ever been because I have a real reason to go out there and

:02:01. > :02:10.perform. I want my son to look back and say, my dad was pretty good.

:02:11. > :02:14.Very good indeed and as usual, Greg has a unique way of preparing

:02:15. > :02:19.himself at these events. He seems to take himself away from everyone else

:02:20. > :02:24.and have his own little setup. He gets his towel out and lives down

:02:25. > :02:31.and gets into the zone. He is one of those athlete whose game face

:02:32. > :02:36.visibly turns on. MICHAEL JOHNSON: There are two sides to Greg

:02:37. > :03:00.Rutherford. He lives in this game. And what a cute kid!

:03:01. > :03:13.The Kenyan champion in lane three. Van Nierkerk two from the outside,

:03:14. > :03:20.should be comfortable enough. Three to go through automatically. Plus

:03:21. > :03:27.three fastest losers over all of the heats.

:03:28. > :03:33.Wayde van Niekerk makes it look so easy. Jonathan Borlee is in there as

:03:34. > :03:41.well, beginning to struggle a little bit. Brandon Valentine Paris from

:03:42. > :03:44.the Grenadines looking strong. Russell of the Bahamas running

:03:45. > :03:53.powerfully. The Kenyan champion also in there.

:03:54. > :04:00.Santos has responded and lifted his form and will take one of the three

:04:01. > :04:07.places. Wayde van Niekerk and Francis Cummins through, they were

:04:08. > :04:10.the three automatic qualifiers. 45.27 four Wayde van Niekerk. He

:04:11. > :04:15.started strongly and sing to save some energy in the middle of the

:04:16. > :04:21.race and then responded when he had to. Wayde van Niekerk the third

:04:22. > :04:28.quickest in the world this year and he will be a real contender for

:04:29. > :04:33.medals. Wayde van Niekerk knows this will be a tough Championship. He has

:04:34. > :04:38.got to get through these rounds. He did this pretty easily. Very smooth

:04:39. > :04:46.throughout the entire 400 metres. This is how he ran the early hours,

:04:47. > :04:51.not expending much energy. You can see Santos struggling a little on

:04:52. > :04:58.the inside. Wayde van Niekerk, that's ten second 100 metres, this

:04:59. > :05:02.year, it has really sent a message to the rest of the 400-metre runner

:05:03. > :05:09.is that he has the speed, and incredible weapon for 400 metres. A

:05:10. > :05:14.very long stride for such a short 400-metre runner, he is not quite

:05:15. > :05:24.six feet tall. Very relaxed, exactly what you want. This is a textbook

:05:25. > :05:29.preliminary round running. You can see, he never looks like you're

:05:30. > :05:37.struggling at all in this early round. Just nice and relaxed. That

:05:38. > :05:42.will put him in good stead for the further rounds. You want to conserve

:05:43. > :05:48.as much energy as you possibly can. He is fortunate to be able to do

:05:49. > :05:54.that today. Santos, silver-medallist from the 2012 Olympics. He hasn't

:05:55. > :05:58.been in that sort of form lately. But he gave no problems at all to

:05:59. > :06:04.Wayde van Niekerk today. Great qualification by Van Nierkerk.

:06:05. > :06:10.Michael Johnson no less saying a great qualification by you, what is

:06:11. > :06:14.it like trying to replicate this on the Olympic stage? Starting from

:06:15. > :06:20.scratch now, going through the rounds, I am grateful I could come

:06:21. > :06:24.through the heat healthy and feeling good. Everyone excited about this

:06:25. > :06:29.event, there are three of you who could go head-to-head. How is it not

:06:30. > :06:34.trying to get too ahead of yourself? It is just an opportunity. I am

:06:35. > :06:39.being inspired each and everyday competing it. It is a blessing to

:06:40. > :06:47.just be here. It is or was great to see you. We appreciate you stopping.

:06:48. > :06:58.These are the standings and the women's heptathlon.

:06:59. > :07:07.Katarina Johnson-Thompson has slipped down to sixth place after

:07:08. > :07:14.that shocker in the shot put. The youngsters doing well, especially

:07:15. > :07:20.Nafissatou Thiam. Only the 200 metres to come.

:07:21. > :07:27.What a difference an evening can make. We were follow-up positivity

:07:28. > :07:29.and joy at the performance from Katarina Johnson-Thompson in

:07:30. > :07:34.particular in the high jump this morning, but that was a poor shot

:07:35. > :07:39.put for her. You said this morning, didn't make too much difference, you

:07:40. > :07:44.felt, that her high jump competition went on for a long time because she

:07:45. > :07:49.was going right up to 2.01. Will she be tired at all because this day is

:07:50. > :07:55.long? They started at 9:30am and they will finish at 11pm, two days

:07:56. > :08:01.longer than day one in 2012. It is a long schedule. It is a long

:08:02. > :08:05.programme for the heptathletes. It is challenging because you never

:08:06. > :08:10.really switch off, you are always thinking about the event, what might

:08:11. > :08:15.you need to do next. The ability to switch off is what you need but it

:08:16. > :08:19.isn't easy. I think she is suffering a little bit. But let's be clear,

:08:20. > :08:26.the shot put needs work and she knows that. This is why she is down

:08:27. > :08:31.in sixth place. She was top after her high jump. This was his third

:08:32. > :08:36.throw. What bothers me is her body language. She knows she is not good

:08:37. > :08:41.at the event and I need to see her being a bit more dynamic. What she

:08:42. > :08:46.needs to do at this point is really drive back but she opens up to the

:08:47. > :08:51.left-hand side which gives the right leg no work to do. She cannot push

:08:52. > :08:56.off it, it is inactive and that is why she's not able to get any

:08:57. > :09:01.purchase on that shot. Steve Backley called it, she might as well have

:09:02. > :09:08.done a standing throw at that point. Contrast that with Thiam, who had an

:09:09. > :09:13.excellent high jump competition and has built on it with her shot put.

:09:14. > :09:17.She has had two personal-best already today. She is a great

:09:18. > :09:23.thrower and we will see that in the javelin. She is dynamic, she uses

:09:24. > :09:26.her legs. She looks like, she is only six foot, she is one of the

:09:27. > :09:31.tallest women in this high jump but she is excellent. You can see what

:09:32. > :09:37.that meant to her. She knows she has put herself right in contention. She

:09:38. > :09:40.is a good second also slower than Jessica Ennis-Hill and Katarina

:09:41. > :09:45.Johnson-Thompson in the 200 so they have to get up some points there and

:09:46. > :09:50.go eyeballs out in the 200 metres which is later evening. Martyn

:09:51. > :09:52.Rooney is the European champion, he is out there and ready for his heat

:09:53. > :10:04.in the 400 metres. Steve Cram. He doesn't have the easiest of

:10:05. > :10:12.heats. He will have to be on his game. He has a couple of experienced

:10:13. > :10:19.guys in there with Chris Brown on his inside. There is Chris Brown

:10:20. > :10:25.inside him. All these three have got the big new talent from Botswana,

:10:26. > :10:31.the man who watched him running in the world junior Championships and

:10:32. > :10:33.he was disqualified from running out of his lane but that didn't take

:10:34. > :10:39.anything away from the huge talent he had. The people from Botswana,

:10:40. > :11:01.they have cut a pretty good for by 14 as well.

:11:02. > :11:05.There are three fastest loser spots and I reckon to be safe, Rooney

:11:06. > :11:21.needs to be in the mid 45 's. He gets off to a good start. They

:11:22. > :11:26.are not helping him, the Olympic refugee has gone past him already.

:11:27. > :11:39.Gordon started well. The youngster now starts to get

:11:40. > :11:51.moving, Thebe. Thebe coming back on Gordon. Gordon leading. Rooney is

:11:52. > :11:55.coming and he is charging but so is Chris Brown. Will this be enough? He

:11:56. > :12:04.has to get in the top three, he won't do that, he won't even be

:12:05. > :12:08.forth, Chris Brown gets fourth. That was so good. Martyn Rooney at the

:12:09. > :12:12.training track said he felt good and he was trying to run his race is a

:12:13. > :12:18.bit more... Not going out too hard. He has done well coming back quick

:12:19. > :12:23.in days gone by but that certainly wasn't one of those. I don't helped

:12:24. > :12:26.by that empty lane in lane three but nonetheless, he let Chris Brown pass

:12:27. > :12:35.him and that could be really critical for him. Yes, he had a long

:12:36. > :12:40.way to look at the Slovenian athlete and for someone who tries to finish

:12:41. > :12:43.strongly, it was a lot to make up perhaps mentally but also physically

:12:44. > :12:47.and Chris Brown took him on the line. I'm not sure that time will be

:12:48. > :12:52.quick enough. Interesting to watch the Botswanan Thebe, he seems to

:12:53. > :13:00.have a lot of strapping on his left leg but those were the three to go

:13:01. > :13:05.through automatically. It didn't look too comfortable for him in the

:13:06. > :13:09.latter stages of the race. It did not but the mistake was made earlier

:13:10. > :13:15.in the race, when you know you have to run on your outside and the

:13:16. > :13:20.runner won't provide you any competition, you have most of the

:13:21. > :13:24.field further up ahead and Martyn Rooney is really pushing down the

:13:25. > :13:28.back stretch. He lost contact with the rest of the field. The athlete

:13:29. > :13:33.he was going to need to compete with for the top three places. What you

:13:34. > :13:37.will see now, he realises they are gone and now you see him starting to

:13:38. > :13:42.accelerate. You should not be able to accelerate the last 100 metres

:13:43. > :13:46.over 400 metres, that was poor running by Martyn Rooney. He is a

:13:47. > :13:50.much more experienced athlete than that and I would expect better. At

:13:51. > :13:55.the same time, we have seen him inconsistent over the past couple of

:13:56. > :14:03.years. Those are the sorts of things we get from Martyn Rooney and I

:14:04. > :14:06.believe it is a shame because he is in the shape to get through to the

:14:07. > :14:07.next round but I doubt he will because of a massive mistake in

:14:08. > :14:22.terms of how he executed that race. I don't know what I was doing, the

:14:23. > :14:28.first 250, I thought I would come home with the guys but I must have

:14:29. > :14:33.gone through in 23 seconds, I don't know. I am gutted for myself. For

:14:34. > :14:38.everyone supporting me. Hopefully if I sneak through, it is all out

:14:39. > :14:44.tomorrow and try to do some damage, but I am just gutted.

:14:45. > :14:51.He is still in with a chance of qualifying. I think the fact he let

:14:52. > :14:57.Chris Brown past him probably annoys him more than anything else. Heat

:14:58. > :15:10.five of the men's 400 metres. What a line-up. Isaac Makwala and lush on

:15:11. > :15:15.merit is in this one as well. Some very quick men.

:15:16. > :15:25.Away they go. Keep your eye on the world junior champion and see how he

:15:26. > :15:33.runs. Makwala also with the bleach blonde hair. Lashawn Merritt ambling

:15:34. > :15:36.down the back straight and already looks to be building a huge lead.

:15:37. > :15:49.Makwala has to work a bit. How has he judged it? Three to go

:15:50. > :15:56.through. Merritt running blind. LaShawn

:15:57. > :16:06.Merritt looking there. It is Makwala coming through.

:16:07. > :16:12.Also finishing strongly was Butrym for the third place. But LaShawn

:16:13. > :16:17.Merritt doing as we expected. Running, he saw nobody but himself

:16:18. > :16:24.in the race. Out in front from lane eight. Looking comfortable.

:16:25. > :16:28.Yeah, LaShawn Merritt looking good through the early qualification.

:16:29. > :16:33.This is how you would want to run the early rounds. Opposite to what

:16:34. > :16:38.we saw with Martyn Rooney. To get up to speed. That is what LaShawn

:16:39. > :16:43.Merritt does well. Then to relax. On the outside of the track with no-one

:16:44. > :16:47.to watch he has the benefit of the big screens either end to see the

:16:48. > :16:53.position in relation to the other runners that allows him to run very

:16:54. > :16:57.relaxed. Very relaxed running. He has a fantastic 200 metre speed. The

:16:58. > :17:03.fastest time in the world of the 200m and he will contest that later.

:17:04. > :17:10.But right now, just very relaxed in the early rounds of the 400m. 2008

:17:11. > :17:16.Olympic champion, looking to regain it from Kirani James who won it in

:17:17. > :17:21.2012. Running well. Consistent and healthy. That bodes well for the

:17:22. > :17:30.chances of this fantastic 400m that we will see here in Rio this week. A

:17:31. > :17:33.great qualification by Merritt. Michael Johnson talking over the

:17:34. > :17:37.replay. How controlled you look. What a great season. You come into

:17:38. > :17:43.the Olympics as a big favourite the. How did you feel out there? I felt

:17:44. > :17:51.good. In lane eight. It felt good. I wanted to run it as

:17:52. > :17:55.smooth as poshly. 45.2, the first round it is good.

:17:56. > :17:59.You bring so much experience to the Olympic Games. You have done it

:18:00. > :18:05.before. Is it a benefit to you ahead of the other rivals? It is. I was

:18:06. > :18:09.unable to compete in 2012. So I'm here now to win it.

:18:10. > :18:14.And not just this. You are going for the 200? I am.

:18:15. > :18:18.I am taking the 400 a round at a time to focus on each round.

:18:19. > :18:21.We wish you well. Thank you for talking to us.

:18:22. > :18:30.Thank you. So two of the big three in LaShawn

:18:31. > :18:37.Merritt and Wayde van Niekerk. Haroun qualifying. And for Martyn

:18:38. > :18:44.Rooney, his 45.60 leaves him with two heats to go, so one of the

:18:45. > :18:47.fastest loser places. Well, here is Greg Rutherford. He

:18:48. > :18:52.starts his bid to retain his Olympic title. The first round of

:18:53. > :18:58.qualifying. The first step in that direction.

:18:59. > :19:05.8.15 or better. That is what is needed to get into Saturday's final.

:19:06. > :19:11.We have seen Henderson, the American, go out to 8.20.

:19:12. > :19:16.Rutherford. Round one. He's fast on the approach... Oh, it's a big jump.

:19:17. > :19:25.Just on that 8.20 mark. But it will not be measured.

:19:26. > :19:30.It was over the board. So, an un-Charles Kennedistic start.

:19:31. > :19:38.Quite significantly beyond the red line.

:19:39. > :19:43.Rutherford is normally so meticulous -- so uncharacteristic. He will have

:19:44. > :19:49.to adjust the run-up. Wang of China.

:19:50. > :19:53.Bronze in Beijing. The young man, the teenager, taking the bronze last

:19:54. > :19:59.year. He performed brilliantly. What can he do in the first round of

:20:00. > :20:05.qualification? He stuttered slightly but that is a big jump from Wang.

:20:06. > :20:12.Well, that is a big statement from him. He is clearly up for this.

:20:13. > :20:21.It's going to be a really interesting final.

:20:22. > :20:28.We hope, fingers crossed, that Greg Rutherford will be involved. But he

:20:29. > :20:35.has to go beyond the 8.20. Wang looks like he has booked a place.

:20:36. > :20:40.Henderson is in. Wang, a good jump. There is Greg. He

:20:41. > :20:46.just has to move the check mark back. The athletes have a mark on

:20:47. > :20:53.the runway. He will move it back 10 or 15 cm. To make the adjustment and

:20:54. > :20:58.get ready for round two. There are three attempts to make the final.

:20:59. > :21:17.So, while he makes the ajustments. Talking about getting through

:21:18. > :21:22.safely, Matthew Hudson-Smith has Kirani James to worry about here. He

:21:23. > :21:28.is right on the inside. Not lane one though.

:21:29. > :21:36.Hudson-Smith, the UK champion. A man who burst on to the scene in 2014. A

:21:37. > :21:41.European Silver Medallist. He has shown superb ability in the big

:21:42. > :21:45.race, often. Although at the European Championships, held before

:21:46. > :21:51.the Olympic Games on the final leg, it looked like he would to what he

:21:52. > :21:57.normally does but he did fade and got the bronze. But he bounced back

:21:58. > :22:04.really well at the London Diamond League. A good performance there.

:22:05. > :22:13.The 21-year-old, I am sure, full of confidence. And Kirani James. We

:22:14. > :22:19.talk about the big three. We have seen van Niekerk, and LaShawn

:22:20. > :22:25.Merritt but now it is time for Kirani to prepare his defence.

:22:26. > :22:27.Verburg is a good target for him to work off. Probably pleased he is

:22:28. > :22:56.there. We have Abubakar and McDonald and

:22:57. > :23:07.then Winston George and Diego Palomeoli.

:23:08. > :23:10.Hudson-Smith should be OK here. Hudson-Smith has shown this season,

:23:11. > :23:22.good enough form to contend with what is ahead of him here.

:23:23. > :23:32.So, heat six and Hudson-Smith is in lain two.

:23:33. > :23:37.-- lane two. Safely away, Kirani James ambles out

:23:38. > :23:42.of the blocks to move that huge frame of his nicely. Hudson-Smith

:23:43. > :23:47.moves up quickly. Hanging on to the American shirt

:23:48. > :23:53.tails in the first 200, then working off him around the bend. Kirani

:23:54. > :23:59.James is watching Winston George. Now the long legs of Kirani James is

:24:00. > :24:02.starting to move. McDonald is going well. But

:24:03. > :24:07.Hudson-Smith going well. In second place. He is looking strong.

:24:08. > :24:14.He must stay strong in the home straight.

:24:15. > :24:19.Verburg cannot get Hudson-Smith before.

:24:20. > :24:25.That is the quickest we have seen. We saw a 44.98 in the first heats.

:24:26. > :24:30.Kirani James dipping inside of that. Easing back nicely. Watching the

:24:31. > :24:35.times coming in. I think that Martyn Rooney will still be just about OK.

:24:36. > :24:46.We will tidy that up for you. . Yes, Matthew Hudson-Smith is an

:24:47. > :24:55.elegant runner. Verbug tied up at the end.

:24:56. > :25:03.They were talking about Wayde van Niekerk and Kirani James and LaShawn

:25:04. > :25:07.Merritt looking strong and Kirani James looked strong.

:25:08. > :25:18.. All of the others fighting so hard behind him.

:25:19. > :25:26.Well, Matthew Hudson-Smith with a nice, easy run. He has gotten up to

:25:27. > :25:32.speed. If you contrast him to what we saw with LaShawn Merritt and some

:25:33. > :25:38.of the others he is a little tight. Tight in the upper body. He wants to

:25:39. > :25:43.relax that a bit to get down before 44 seconds. That will have to

:25:44. > :25:48.happen. But I thought he did what he needed to do to put himself in

:25:49. > :25:56.contention right here coming off the bend. Verburg coming round the lane

:25:57. > :26:02.but slowing down. He is not in contact with Kirani

:26:03. > :26:08.James but Matthew looking relaxed on the home stretch. That is a good

:26:09. > :26:13.sign he has a little left for the next round. He will need it. The

:26:14. > :26:17.times with ill drop and require him to be faster to get into the final.

:26:18. > :26:24.But he has the potential to get into the final. He has been consistent. A

:26:25. > :26:28.very good race at the Anniversary Games, and he started well here in

:26:29. > :26:32.Rio also. Michael Johnson saying that you have

:26:33. > :26:41.the potential to make the final. That backs that up? Yes.

:26:42. > :26:48.It was what I thought I would experience.

:26:49. > :26:53.The Jamaican, McDonald, I thought would take second. But I was closer

:26:54. > :26:57.than I thought. I negotiated the round and got through. That is all I

:26:58. > :27:02.could do. When you qualified in Birmingham,

:27:03. > :27:08.there was a look of disbelief on your face, you are an Olympian. Now

:27:09. > :27:14.you are here, has it lived up to expectations? Yes, it is still very

:27:15. > :27:19.surreal! I am taking it round by round. The semi-finals will be

:27:20. > :27:22.tough. You just have to take every round to the final, really. So I'm

:27:23. > :27:27.excited. It is the balance of being excited

:27:28. > :27:31.and enjoying the moment but getting the job done, like you just have?

:27:32. > :27:36.Yes, definitely. The first part is done. Now on to the next round.

:27:37. > :27:41.Everyone here is very close as you can tell by the rounds. So it is

:27:42. > :27:43.about who wants it more, really. We wish you well for the semis,

:27:44. > :27:48.Matt. Thank you.

:27:49. > :27:55.And tidying up the results, Martyn Rooney still hanging on. There is

:27:56. > :28:02.one more race to come. Verburg is ahead of him.

:28:03. > :28:10.There is one more heat to come, Rooney is at the moment the third of

:28:11. > :28:13.the fastest losers. This is Manyonga of South Africa.

:28:14. > :28:26.This is in the long jump qualification. He had a foul. Greg

:28:27. > :28:30.Rutherford did. But it looks as though Manyonga... Well, let's have

:28:31. > :28:41.a look at this. He needs a white flag. He has one.

:28:42. > :28:45.He just shortened his stride. Looking down at the distance boards.

:28:46. > :28:52.You can see on the side of the pit a wonderful shot, that.

:28:53. > :28:58.The agility, in the air. Reaching as much has he can. Cutting the sand.

:28:59. > :29:07.A decent jump. He is waiting for the measurement. 8.12. Just shy of auto

:29:08. > :29:12.qualifying. But likely to be enough. Rutherford is 13th to jump. I hope

:29:13. > :29:18.he is not superstitious. But he has a long time to wait. It's a tough

:29:19. > :29:26.thing in qualifying, that. He will have about 15 to 20 minutes to wait.

:29:27. > :29:34.But he know what is to do. I'm sure he will get it right the next time.

:29:35. > :29:36.So the final heat. We have seen outstanding athletes. But perhaps

:29:37. > :30:15.not packed with the greatest talent. El Masslak with his familiar arm

:30:16. > :30:22.coverings. -- Pavel Maslak.

:30:23. > :30:26.There is Steven Gardiner. The quickest in the field.

:30:27. > :30:40.Still not yet 21. 44.7 last year.

:30:41. > :30:53.And outside of him you have from Nigeria, Eraiyokan.

:30:54. > :31:11.Rafal Omelko of Poland. And Bonevacia of the Netherlands and

:31:12. > :31:12.from lane eight. This is the final heat in the first

:31:13. > :31:26.round. Three to go through automatically

:31:27. > :31:32.and Steven Gardiner working from the sometimes difficult lane number one.

:31:33. > :31:43.The Polish athlete outside him, the man who was bronze in the European

:31:44. > :31:47.indoors in Prague last year. Pavel Maslak dominating in that as he so

:31:48. > :32:02.often does. Three to go through automatically. Also going strongly,

:32:03. > :32:06.Liemarvin Bonvevacia. Liemarvin Bonvevacia and Gardiner will take

:32:07. > :32:12.it. Liemarvin Bonvevacia just holding on the third. 45.13 for the

:32:13. > :32:17.winner and the rest some way behind. I think Martyn Rooney will be

:32:18. > :32:28.absolutely fine despite running poorly.

:32:29. > :32:36.The runner from Bahrain able to look around and see that he had done the

:32:37. > :32:40.job... We were both looking sadly, it was right on it but it means

:32:41. > :32:46.Martyn Rooney is out. They will have to work this out because Pavel

:32:47. > :32:51.Maslak and Rafal Omelko have been given exactly the same time in

:32:52. > :33:02.fourth and fifth. Whichever of those two get through, the news is, Rooney

:33:03. > :33:05.is not true. I thought Gardiner would come supremely through but he

:33:06. > :33:11.held it together nicely on the inside. Pavel Maslak looked like he

:33:12. > :33:17.was coming and then he just stopped. He normally keeps coming nicely

:33:18. > :33:23.through. He finishes in fifth place. He has been given this, the same as

:33:24. > :33:27.Rafal Omelko in fourth. Sadly, the news is Martyn Rooney will not be

:33:28. > :33:37.going through to the semifinal. Ali Khamis winning that one.

:33:38. > :33:47.GABBY LOGAN: This session not going quite the way we hoped for British

:33:48. > :33:50.athletes. We have seen some disappointing throws from Jessica

:33:51. > :33:56.Ennis-Hill and Katarina Johnson-Thompson and the women's 200

:33:57. > :34:01.metres coming through next. Martyn Rooney was obviously very devastated

:34:02. > :34:05.with that performance and he is out. As he should be, he should be

:34:06. > :34:08.disappointed because that wasn't the type of performance that he would

:34:09. > :34:13.have known he would need to put in. He didn't execute that race properly

:34:14. > :34:17.at all. We have seen this from him, he has been in this position before.

:34:18. > :34:21.We are going back to Steve Backley because maybe we will get some joy

:34:22. > :34:27.now. Greg Rutherford is out on the runway.

:34:28. > :34:39.Steve Backley : no one is setting the world alight at all the 32

:34:40. > :34:45.competitors in this qualification round, only 12 will advance to

:34:46. > :34:52.tomorrow's final. And at the moment, early stages, only the second round

:34:53. > :35:04.but at the moment, it is a jump of around seven... 79 is 12th placed

:35:05. > :35:10.sham. -- Chang. Greg Rutherford looking to make small adjustments.

:35:11. > :35:14.He moved his run-up back and he will have a little Cech and his foot to

:35:15. > :35:22.those acting where he would start. -- have a little checkmark.

:35:23. > :35:32.He hit that board hard that time, he likes it. No, another foul the

:35:33. > :35:40.Rutherford. He knew he was over the wood. By the smallest of margins.

:35:41. > :35:46.The pressure is on for Rutherford. He did make an adjustment but it

:35:47. > :35:56.wasn't enough. Two fouls. Only one more attempt.

:35:57. > :36:03.Rutherford under immense pressure now. He will have another ten or 15

:36:04. > :36:10.minute wait before his third attempt. One more remaining.

:36:11. > :36:16.All those hours and hours of hard work, sweat and toil and he comes

:36:17. > :36:21.here to defend his Olympic title and he has one jump to salvage his

:36:22. > :36:25.Olympic Games. We will leave the stadium right now and hand you back

:36:26. > :36:26.to Jason Mohammad for some swimming action but we will be back here

:36:27. > :36:38.later. Thank you, Gabby. We have had some fantastic moments

:36:39. > :36:44.in the Olympic swimming pool, tears and dancing, and that is just from

:36:45. > :36:48.the presenters! Hopefully there will be plenty of dancing tonight because

:36:49. > :36:53.we have two Brits in the final tonight. We have got Jazz Carlin in

:36:54. > :36:59.his second medal of this Olympic Games. She has a real chance. The

:37:00. > :37:06.crowd will be out tonight and very loud because we have got Michael

:37:07. > :37:11.Phelps, round two of Phelps. 100-metre butterfly. Last time,

:37:12. > :37:30.there was a pretty serious day off. We were loving it.

:37:31. > :37:35.Michael Phelps has just such an army of fans, someone has got the face

:37:36. > :37:55.tattooed on the arm. I heard that was you, Helen Skelton

:37:56. > :38:01.(!) that is dedication. When people decide to get their idols tattooed

:38:02. > :38:02.on them... Not that moody shot to! You would get something a bit

:38:03. > :38:14.better. LAUGHTER

:38:15. > :38:21.There is nothing wrong with a bit of love for your idle.

:38:22. > :38:28.We had a Blue Peter moment earlier. She was going to draw it on me and I

:38:29. > :38:31.said, how good are you and she said, I will try to trace it and we

:38:32. > :38:40.thought we had better put a picture on it. Twitter will explode again

:38:41. > :38:45.now you have your chest out! Hosszu going for her fourth goal. No world

:38:46. > :38:49.champion or Olympic champion in this. How does anybody call it and

:38:50. > :38:56.cause an upset? I don't think she will have a crack

:38:57. > :39:41.at the world record. She won 100. I am missing Emily Seebohm

:39:42. > :39:44.and Missy Franklin. With them out, it will be

:39:45. > :39:53.up for anyone. Who is going to get this.

:39:54. > :40:13.With those two out, I can't... The final women's 200 metres

:40:14. > :40:21.backstroke, Hosszu straight up into, She will attack it from the front,

:40:22. > :40:31.Caldwell does come back, she has a ready won the 400 medley,

:40:32. > :40:48.difficult to see The only other woman who has been on

:40:49. > :40:51.the podium is Dorado. Gold, silver, bronze already.

:40:52. > :41:00.Dorado was with her for the first 50 metres.

:41:01. > :41:05.She is just punishing, she blasted out and the rest

:41:06. > :41:08.of the field unable to live with this pace right now.

:41:09. > :41:22.Dirado actually beat Missy Franklin at the US finals,

:41:23. > :41:24.she is coming into this competition as the fastest American.

:41:25. > :41:26.It is Hosszu of Hungary, Caldwell does come back,

:41:27. > :41:30.but she is really going to have to start making a move seen

:41:31. > :41:32.because Hosszu still swimming away from Caldwell, but not from Dirado.

:41:33. > :41:40.Interesting move. Dirado coming back strongly.

:41:41. > :41:47.Dirado three from the top with a black cap.

:41:48. > :41:49.I wonder if Dirado made her move too early.

:41:50. > :41:58.It is when Hosszu is under pressure, we saw in the 200 metre medley,

:41:59. > :42:02.she struggled a little bit, another beautiful turn.

:42:03. > :42:05.The fastest so far has been Dirado with the best

:42:06. > :42:19.Is Hosszu going to be challenged, Dirado is coming back.

:42:20. > :42:21.She got the silver medal to Hosszu in the 400 metre medley,

:42:22. > :42:24.it is going to be very close, goodness me, it was Dirado!

:42:25. > :42:27.Dirado with the gold right on the finish.

:42:28. > :42:39.It was the last stretch, gold to Dirado of the USA,

:42:40. > :42:40.Hosszu the silver, Caldwell the bronze.

:42:41. > :42:48.What a fantastic comeback for Dirado.

:42:49. > :42:50.She has her first individual gold here, she has an individual gold,

:42:51. > :43:09.The guts and the courage to let her do that and know that

:43:10. > :43:12.you have got something in the back end, I cannot wait to see

:43:13. > :43:15.Hosszu obviously disappointed, still trying to muster a smile

:43:16. > :43:18.with her three gold medals, but Dirado, here is the start,

:43:19. > :43:20.and Hosszu brilliant on the start and turns,

:43:21. > :43:32.They were both empty, the energy was...

:43:33. > :43:35.Here we go. Dirado hit first, and...

:43:36. > :43:37.Oh! Show that again!

:43:38. > :43:39.Oh my goodness! Are you sure?

:43:40. > :43:43.Hosszu looking over, the second she had touched,

:43:44. > :43:48.looking over, and Dirado... She cannot believe it.

:43:49. > :43:54.What is even more amazing is that Katie Ledecky is going to join

:43:55. > :44:10.The defending Olympic champion was not

:44:11. > :44:13.there, the defending world champion was not there, and that is what

:44:14. > :44:17.happens when you go for it. Brilliant.

:44:18. > :44:24.Just stand there and don't let her brush you are.

:44:25. > :44:27.Have a look at the scoreboard again. That is what we need to see.

:44:28. > :44:30.There is the scoreboard, it shows that Dirado of the USA

:44:31. > :44:32.is the women's Olympic 200 metres backstroke champion,

:44:33. > :44:35.61 hundredths of a second ahead of Hosszu from Hungary, she will

:44:36. > :44:55.Wow! I'm going to have to call a taxi.

:44:56. > :45:18.Absolutely amazing to see that comeback.

:45:19. > :45:21.Here is Michael Phelps in the room ahead of his metre butterfly final,

:45:22. > :45:31.He is the oldest individual gold-medallist in the pool.

:45:32. > :45:36.He still seems at the top of his game.

:45:37. > :45:40.I know a lot of things went on in that time, but he sort

:45:41. > :45:43.of reassessed things and came back, because he wanted to come back.

:45:44. > :45:51.Andy Jamison has had the privilege of commentating on every single

:45:52. > :46:02.Olympic medal that Michael Phelps has one, which sends into the top

:46:03. > :46:15.You must really be enjoying yourself, you must be

:46:16. > :46:32.To be quite frank I am running out of ways to describe him.

:46:33. > :46:37.Two still was and two bronzes to go with those 22 golds.

:46:38. > :46:40.Here is Tom Shields in lane seven, and Michael Phelps is next to him.

:46:41. > :46:54.There is his mum and his wife, and his little baby.

:46:55. > :47:21.And this guy could win, the Hungarian.

:47:22. > :47:25.He switched events from the individual medley to the butterfly.

:47:26. > :47:26.Zhulao Li is next to Phelps from China.

:47:27. > :47:33.He had that difficult evening last night, straight after his victory.

:47:34. > :47:42.For a while, with about three strokes to go, he was not sure.

:47:43. > :47:45.There is Chad Le Clos, the world champion,

:47:46. > :48:09.Here is the fastest qualifier, he swam very quickly indeed,

:48:10. > :48:15.Le Clos went faster last year than Phelps.

:48:16. > :48:20.It will be a very close race, I think Michael Phelps knows that.

:48:21. > :48:22.Schooling went to school and did training in the United States,

:48:23. > :48:32.I am not sure how the Hungarian is going to get on.

:48:33. > :48:37.They have all done a Michael Phelps to Michael Phelps.

:48:38. > :48:41.Everyone else still has their tops on, making him wait,

:48:42. > :49:14.This will be covered with the biggest test

:49:15. > :49:23.The final of the men's 100 metres butterfly,

:49:24. > :49:44.Just asking the crowd to be silent at the start.

:49:45. > :50:01.Right on the world record line, ahead of Michael Phelps,

:50:02. > :50:09.and Schooling is ripping it apart down the first 50 metres.

:50:10. > :50:40.Schooling, Joseph Schooling, the champion, in the 100

:50:41. > :50:43.metres butterfly, the Olympic champion.

:50:44. > :50:46.50.39, Le Clos equal second with Cseh, Michael Phelps

:50:47. > :50:58.Michael Phelps, Le Clos, Cseh, all got the silver medal,

:50:59. > :51:00.I have never seen that, I have never seen

:51:01. > :51:05.All his protagonists, probably the last individual race,

:51:06. > :51:08.we will see him in, and he will stand on the podium

:51:09. > :51:21.Mirek Topoloanek top There is something fitting about that. But

:51:22. > :51:34.Joseph Schooling was brilliant. From the very word go. Right here. He

:51:35. > :51:41.extended the lead and he won by nearly 0.89 of a second.

:51:42. > :51:47.And that is Singapore's first ever Olympic medal. That was utterly

:51:48. > :51:51.brilliant. I thought every round. Faster and

:51:52. > :51:53.faster. We both thought he was the threat to

:51:54. > :52:16.Michael Phelps. Have Utter sheer delight. Look at

:52:17. > :52:23.It is just that Joseph Schooling from Singapore.

:52:24. > :52:33.The first ever Olympic champion for Singapore.

:52:34. > :52:39.Phelps is there, Le Clos is there, Czeh is there.

:52:40. > :52:46.Three-way tie for silver, Phelps, Le Clos and Czeh.

:52:47. > :52:56.To be fair, you've called it in the last couple of days,

:52:57. > :52:59.you said Joe Schooling was going to cause an upset.

:53:00. > :53:13.In the heat and the semi, he was coonsistent.

:53:14. > :53:15.Michael Phelps, you thought - you never bet against him

:53:16. > :53:17.but he obviously didn't have the speed.

:53:18. > :53:19.Next up, it's Britain's Jazz Carlin, chasing her second

:53:20. > :53:23.She's already got a silver in the 400m earlier in the week.

:53:24. > :53:26.Let's relive that moment, because it was so, so good,

:53:27. > :53:38.wasn't it, to see Jazz get a silver medal and get on to the podium.

:53:39. > :53:48.Here she is, Jazz Carlin. Fantastic. She will have to get

:53:49. > :53:49.against Tapas, though. -- Kapas.

:53:50. > :54:03.Ledecky will be so far ahead that hopefully she'll clock those girls.

:54:04. > :54:05.It's between those three for who gets silver and bronze.

:54:06. > :54:09.Kapas has beaten Jazz every time she's raced her this year.

:54:10. > :54:43.There is Ledecky. She looks confident.

:54:44. > :54:48.Still only 19. So, Jazz Carlin of Great Britain is

:54:49. > :54:54.in three from the top of the shot. With that red hat.

:54:55. > :55:04.She has already won her silver medal in the free. Could she get another

:55:05. > :55:09.medal? A silver would be brilliant. Ledecky very focussed. Her coach

:55:10. > :55:15.says of her that she swims as if it is a matter of rent and food. She

:55:16. > :55:23.has a fury inside of her. If you have to pay the rent, and you

:55:24. > :55:28.certainly have to eat! The 800m freestyle for the women's in the

:55:29. > :55:34.Olympic Games. A good start for Ledecky from the gun, on the go. She

:55:35. > :55:40.is off. That may be the last time we see Ledecky, she is off. She looks

:55:41. > :55:43.really, really good. Comfortable but really making a confident move from

:55:44. > :55:46.the start. I think she is going for the world

:55:47. > :55:52.record, Andy. We talk about the splits. It is a longer race.

:55:53. > :55:57.Jazz Carlin in second place. I was going to talk about the lane draw.

:55:58. > :56:04.For Jazz it is interesting. Left of Ledecky. So three from the top of

:56:05. > :56:15.the picture now. But below Ledecky, there is Kappas in five. And Smith

:56:16. > :56:35.is strong. And Ashwood in seven. I was weary of her lane.

:56:36. > :56:38.She's slotted into metronomic 61.3, 61.4, 61.4 and she repeated that.

:56:39. > :56:42.Her pacing on the first 100m is stronger and I like that,

:56:43. > :56:49.having talked about the position of the lanes, is that the race

:56:50. > :56:52.above Ledecky for second seems to be at the top of the pool,

:56:53. > :57:04.If Jazz can keep this time, she'll win silver.

:57:05. > :57:10.The good news for Britain is that Jazz Carlin is looking strong and

:57:11. > :57:14.comfortable. If she can go that time, I think she will win the

:57:15. > :57:23.silver. In second place with the red hat of Great Britain in lane three.

:57:24. > :57:24.Ledecky is 0 /* Ledecky is is 0.78 of a second

:57:25. > :57:27.below her own world record pace. Belmonte normally goes

:57:28. > :57:30.out slowly and picks it It's a different

:57:31. > :57:36.tactic from Belmonte. She had the last year off

:57:37. > :57:48.with an injury and has come back strongly here winning

:57:49. > :57:49.the 200m butterfly. She's the first Spanish woman to get

:57:50. > :57:52.a gold in the Commonwealth Games. Well, she's up past Kapas,

:57:53. > :58:13.the European champion. We'll check Ledecky's

:58:14. > :58:15.splits but I wouldn't be surprised if Ledecky gets

:58:16. > :58:17.down to 8.4, you know. She'll blow this out of the water,

:58:18. > :58:19.I think. Ledecky leading by just about ten

:58:20. > :58:28.metres or so after 300m, That's ten lengths still

:58:29. > :58:35.to go at this turn. Jazz Carlin just outside

:58:36. > :58:38.of Ledecky's British-record Starting to pick up the pace

:58:39. > :58:43.is Kapas of Hungary in the centre. Belmonte in seven -

:58:44. > :58:46.excuse me, in eight - but look how smoothly

:58:47. > :58:48.and comfortably she's doing it. She's almost a body length ahead

:58:49. > :58:51.of her own world-record pace. It's interesting because she went

:58:52. > :58:53.nearly 0.75 seconds faster She's now slotted into

:58:54. > :58:56.pretty much 61.4s, 61.3. So she's really dropping this down

:58:57. > :58:59.beyond where she was before. So every single 100m is eating away

:59:00. > :59:03.at the record and I know that's - I think she's going to knock a good

:59:04. > :59:06.2.5 or 3 seconds off Right now when the camera shot comes

:59:07. > :59:10.out wide, you'll see Jazz Carlin, red cap, three from the top,

:59:11. > :59:13.for a three-way tie now There's only two medals

:59:14. > :59:20.to be given out. Carlin and then you've got Kapas

:59:21. > :59:30.and at the bottom, Belmonte. That was the halfway turn

:59:31. > :59:44.in the final of the women's 800m Katie Ledecky from the gun

:59:45. > :59:49.and at the halfway turn she's about 15m ahead but the great news

:59:50. > :59:52.for Britain is that Jazz Carlin is in second place, just holding off

:59:53. > :59:54.the European champion, Boglarka Kapas of Hungary,

:59:55. > :59:56.with the white hat, At the bottom, we can't see it

:59:57. > :00:00.but Mireia Belmonte is close One story of one of the best women

:00:01. > :00:07.swimmers in the world right now. You're watching a female Michael

:00:08. > :00:10.Phelps in the making I think. To be chasing four gold medals

:00:11. > :00:14.in her second Olympics at the age of 19 is just amazing and she's

:00:15. > :00:19.blowing this field away. This second story is who is going

:00:20. > :00:34.to get the second medal. We've got Jazz Carlin,

:00:35. > :00:36.Bograrka Kapas and I think Belmonte maybe being dropped

:00:37. > :01:07.at the bottom there. At this turn coming up, 250 metres

:01:08. > :01:15.left. Ledecky leading. They still haven't quite dropped.

:01:16. > :01:22.Katie Ledecky has dropped everyone. That is a great shot, of Katie

:01:23. > :01:30.Ledecky, she has faced this many times and it will be a solo effort

:01:31. > :01:34.for that world record. She said Ryan Lochte could sometimes not keep up

:01:35. > :01:40.with her when she was training with the men! She just keeps going and

:01:41. > :01:46.going. She is not extending the world record, she is just going

:01:47. > :01:50.head-to-head now. Just the one body length ahead of the world record, it

:01:51. > :01:55.is not too bad and that this turn, three lengths to go in this final of

:01:56. > :02:07.the women's 800 metres freestyle. Three lengths left.

:02:08. > :02:10.Second, just, is Kapas of Hungary and three fints of a second behind

:02:11. > :02:13.her is Jazz Carlin of Great Britain, but they still haven't quite dropped

:02:14. > :02:23.She was three-tenths behind at each of the last two turns

:02:24. > :02:27.Oh, goodness me, 0.03 seconds behind Boglarka Kapsa in the second medal.

:02:28. > :02:30.Gold, no doubt about that, Adrian, with 100m to go.

:02:31. > :02:32.But it's going to be a great scrap for

:02:33. > :02:33.silver and bronze. Absolutely.

:02:34. > :02:36.Now for Katie Ledecky, dominant this this race.

:02:37. > :02:38.Look at the race for the silver medal.

:02:39. > :02:41.It's down to a sprint. Can Jazz Carlin get back to Kapas?

:02:42. > :02:44.Kapas has taken a lead there. Jazz Carlin needs to stay with her.

:02:45. > :02:50.Boglarka Kapas was fourth on the 400m.

:02:51. > :02:57.Jazz made a move. Great news for Great Britain.

:02:58. > :03:06.Katie Ledecky, no doubt about the champion.

:03:07. > :03:10.She's absolutely streets ahead. Here we go.

:03:11. > :03:13.Jazz Carlin going over now half a second ahead of the silver medal.

:03:14. > :03:15.So Carlin sprinting down for the back end.

:03:16. > :03:17.Katie Ledecky, though, one of the greatest women swimmers

:03:18. > :03:22.It will be a massive new world record for Katie Ledecky.

:03:23. > :03:27.She's set 12 world records since she won in London 12012

:03:28. > :03:32.8:04.7, gold to Katie Ledecky of the USA, a massive world

:03:33. > :03:35.record and brilliant news for Great Britain, silver for

:03:36. > :03:37.Jazz Carlin! Yes, it is!

:03:38. > :03:41.Very close indeed and she wins the silver.

:03:42. > :03:44.Bronze to Kapas of Hungary. That's great news for Britain.

:03:45. > :03:51.Well, we couldn't have asked for more from Jazz there.

:03:52. > :03:54.I think Katie Ledecky gave everything, emptied her tank right

:03:55. > :03:58.at the end and you can see her sprinting in the last five metres.

:03:59. > :04:01.What a thank you to the crowd for supporting her,

:04:02. > :04:07.And as you said, Andy, the first teenager to defend a title

:04:08. > :04:09.at the Olympic Games. Jazz Carlin did everything.

:04:10. > :04:15.Two silver medals against the great Katie Ledecky.

:04:16. > :04:18.You have to be so pleased and proud with those results, absolutely.

:04:19. > :04:22.Well, it's absolutely outstanding for Jazz Carlin, it really is.

:04:23. > :04:27.But let's just focus, just for a moment, on Katie Ledecky.

:04:28. > :04:33.Gold on the 400m freestyle and a new world record,

:04:34. > :04:36.smashed her own world record there and she's done exactly

:04:37. > :04:45.the same again on this 800m freestyle.

:04:46. > :04:48.Also won the gold in the women's 4 x 200 for the USA and she's added

:04:49. > :04:51.silver in the 4 x 100m relay as well.

:04:52. > :04:53.Four golds and a silver, what a meet she's had.

:04:54. > :04:55.There's only four American women ever done that - sorry,

:04:56. > :05:02.Amy Van Dyken in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta

:05:03. > :05:08.and Missy Franklin, of course, in 2012 and Katie Ledecky joins

:05:09. > :05:10.the ranks, for me, of one of the greatest swimmers I've seen

:05:11. > :05:16.and I imagine a couple more Games, Andy.

:05:17. > :05:20.That has to put Jazz Carlin up there as one of the most successful

:05:21. > :05:27.So gold, a new world record as expected but the time was enormous.

:05:28. > :05:30.8:04.7 and she's getting closer and closer to that

:05:31. > :05:34.Katie Ledecky, her fourth gold, a brilliant second silver

:05:35. > :05:45.for Jazz Carlin of Great Britain. Kapas wins bronze.

:05:46. > :05:48.My hands are actually hurting I was clapping so hard then.

:05:49. > :05:51.We've witnessed something very special.

:05:52. > :05:55.Katie Ledecky, 19 years old. Put that time into context.

:05:56. > :05:58.I'm blown away. Think she's Dane Bowers...

:05:59. > :06:01.Another level! Another level.

:06:02. > :06:04.I saw Beccy in Beijing and I was gobsmacked when she broke

:06:05. > :06:06.the world record and that was 10 seconds faster than Beccy.

:06:07. > :06:12.She was 12 seconds ahead of anyone else in the field.

:06:13. > :06:15.than they did but who cares? Jazz got a silver medal.

:06:16. > :06:19.How difficult was it for Jazz because she couldn't

:06:20. > :06:23.see where the others were in the race in that position.

:06:24. > :06:35.Is it difficult? It is.

:06:36. > :06:39.But she would have known Belmonte would be it.

:06:40. > :06:42.She did the same thing to me in London and crept up on me.

:06:43. > :06:44.Jazz would have been aware of that going in.

:06:45. > :06:47.She knew it would be split like that but for Katie,

:06:48. > :06:50.I genuinely believe this woman can go

:06:51. > :06:52.under eight minutes. I genuinely do.

:06:53. > :06:57.I know it didn't happen tonight but I do believe that.

:06:58. > :07:05.That was talked a lot about coming into this, you know.

:07:06. > :07:07.Do you think you can get close to eight?

:07:08. > :07:09.Close to the elusive eight minutes?

:07:10. > :07:11.And she sort of giggled but she's 19.

:07:12. > :07:12.I know. I just think it's...

:07:13. > :07:14.I mean ultimately, I suppose the thing is that she's

:07:15. > :07:16.completely raised the bar but ultimately, I suppose,

:07:17. > :07:18.for her, and where does that motivation come from?

:07:19. > :07:21.It's her best time and her motivation is every time she gets

:07:22. > :07:24.in the pool or trains, she wants to better her

:07:25. > :07:27.She's so good she has to train with the men.

:07:28. > :07:29.She trains with Ryan Lochte because there's no-one

:07:30. > :07:34.No-one else has moved it on with her and that's

:07:35. > :07:39.Katie has moved it on so much no-one's kind of chasing her back up

:07:40. > :07:41.and I think that's where Jazz needs to step up and some

:07:42. > :07:51.Somebody who was chasing her tonight is Jazz Carlin, our silver

:07:52. > :08:00.Where are your family? Up there?

:08:01. > :08:02.It's so importantly that they're there because they're

:08:03. > :08:04.such a big support. Definitely.

:08:05. > :08:12.All those early mornings driving me to training when I was moody

:08:13. > :08:13.and didn't want to go training. You're moody?

:08:14. > :08:17.I mean at five o'clock in the morning, it's hard to be

:08:18. > :08:18.upbeat and happy. You know what?

:08:19. > :08:22.They've been in there from the start doing the tough times and the hard

:08:23. > :08:25.times and it's nice they can finally be here and to come away

:08:26. > :08:27.with two silver medals is an incredible feeling.

:08:28. > :08:29.We were chatting before and you were saying you can't

:08:30. > :08:32.believe it, two silver medals. It's been a tough road.

:08:33. > :08:33.Four years ago, it was really difficult.

:08:34. > :08:35.How much changes have you had to go through?

:08:36. > :08:39.Your lovely boyfriend Lewis lost his mum this year as well.

:08:40. > :08:51.Obviously, I relocated to the Bath programme two years ago nearly

:08:52. > :08:54.so I've had to change coaches and change where I love

:08:55. > :08:58.I've got an amazing coach and support staff at Bath.

:08:59. > :09:02.I've been work being a sports psychologist to stick with my race

:09:03. > :09:05.plan and be confident and working on those sides of things as well,

:09:06. > :09:09.It's amazing racing with these girls because even though we race

:09:10. > :09:12.against each other, I'm great friends with a lot of those girls

:09:13. > :09:14.so it's nice to race against each other at the top.

:09:15. > :09:17.Did you know it was basically a three-horse race for

:09:18. > :09:23.the silver medal. Could you see them?

:09:24. > :09:26.I've got great goggles so I could see around.

:09:27. > :09:31.I've been feeling a bit rough for a couple of days so I thought

:09:32. > :09:35.I'd just go out there and to come away with a silver is incredible.

:09:36. > :09:37.What happens now? Are you having a nice break?

:09:38. > :09:39.I don't even know. I haven't even thought about it.

:09:40. > :09:44.I need to hopefully go away with my mum and dad to chill out

:09:45. > :09:48.with them and see them, sort of, relax with me because they get a bit

:09:49. > :09:50.stressed watching poolside. And painting a new house.

:09:51. > :09:52.I know! I've got a lot of work to do.

:09:53. > :09:59.I'm more of a project manager rather than the person who

:10:00. > :10:00.is actually doing it. Ah, I see!

:10:01. > :10:05.But yeah, on to the new things and I'll have some time away

:10:06. > :10:07.from the pool and see what's next really.

:10:08. > :10:08.Fantastic. Well done, darling.

:10:09. > :10:13.We talk so often about swimmers and their four-year plan

:10:14. > :10:15.and how, you know, that's what they're working towards.

:10:16. > :10:17.For Jazz, things have been up and down.

:10:18. > :10:19.She missed the home Olympics because of illness, big

:10:20. > :10:24.So how impressive is what she's done over this Olympics?

:10:25. > :10:27.I think coming into this she kind of had a funny Olympic trials,

:10:28. > :10:29.where she didn't actually swim her best that she can do

:10:30. > :10:32.in the 800m and her 400m was so much better.

:10:33. > :10:35.So to come back to two silver medals at Olympic Games is just fantastic.

:10:36. > :10:38.I think she'll be over with the moon with this week and it's

:10:39. > :10:41.amazing she's put it right. She's fallen fourth a few times.

:10:42. > :10:47.She missed out on London but she's written it off

:10:48. > :10:52.This is the medal ceremony for the women's 200m backstroke.

:10:53. > :10:55.There was a big shock in this one because we all expected

:10:56. > :10:59.to see Katinka Hosszu on the top of the podium.

:11:00. > :11:04.She is of course in silver medal position but it wasn't how

:11:05. > :11:14.we expected it to be. A lot of punters will be unhappy.

:11:15. > :11:17.After we saw her in the first race, winning the backstroke in the IM

:11:18. > :11:20.by a margin, people thought she had the speed and the endurance.

:11:21. > :11:27.She thought she'd win it but the iron lady

:11:28. > :11:34.She's built this image as the iron lady.

:11:35. > :11:40.Chinese TV called her the iron lady and she's played up to it.

:11:41. > :11:44.I've been to swimming meets where you can buy hats

:11:45. > :11:50.with #ironlady on, she makes the most of it and rightly so.

:11:51. > :11:53.We talked a lot about her and her coach and her husband

:11:54. > :11:56.and it was actually really sweet.

:11:57. > :11:59.He cheered. He smiled.

:12:00. > :12:02.She walked over to him after and they had a big hug,

:12:03. > :12:06.smiled and congratulated each other. It was nice to see.

:12:07. > :12:09.Because we've talked a lot about their dynamic and how

:12:10. > :12:12.passionate he gets when she's racing and it was so nice they celebrated

:12:13. > :12:16.the silver medal just as if it was a gold medal.

:12:17. > :12:20.She said the interesting thing is she trains in America

:12:21. > :12:23.and she said they dream in rainbows and in Hungary they dream

:12:24. > :12:34.Huge congratulations for the American swimmer.

:12:35. > :12:37.A lot of Americans are in here tonight and they may forgive us

:12:38. > :12:41.for saying that a lot of Americans in here tonight didn't necessarily

:12:42. > :12:45.come to cheer her on but they're very, very proud nonetheless.

:12:46. > :12:49.A lot of people are out here for Phelps of course.

:12:50. > :12:56.She's certainly having a good Olympics games.

:12:57. > :13:03.She's gone bronze, silver and now a gold one.

:13:04. > :13:17.The whole set. She can go home now!

:13:18. > :13:24.It is quite hard to see past Florent Manaudou. It is a difficult one to

:13:25. > :13:47.get. Massive evasion, my word. --

:13:48. > :13:52.ovation. If that doesn't send goose bumps up your spine, nothing will.

:13:53. > :13:58.This might be a huge opportunity for Brazil to get a medal and here is

:13:59. > :14:01.Ben Proud in link two. He set in the semifinal and new British record.

:14:02. > :14:07.Brilliant to see a British swimmer in the final. He could get a medal,

:14:08. > :14:15.only 81 hundredths of a second outside bronze medal position. He

:14:16. > :14:20.had a perfect dive this morning. He has put himself in a great position.

:14:21. > :14:24.I see him edging to the front. Nathan Adrian, somehow, he managed

:14:25. > :14:30.to get his hand in top three positions all the time. If this man

:14:31. > :14:34.does, wouldn't that be fantastic? That is Anthony Ervin coming he won

:14:35. > :14:38.the gold in the 1500 metres freestyle in the Sydney Olympics in

:14:39. > :14:46.2000. He then took eight years off and came back from London 2012 and

:14:47. > :14:53.he made the final and he is the third fastest qualifier for the

:14:54. > :15:00.final. . Cover Robin set two Ukrainian records. This guy is the

:15:01. > :15:06.defending Olympic champion, Florent Manaudou. He likes to go faster from

:15:07. > :15:10.the heat to the semi, the semi to the final. He improved by whole

:15:11. > :15:14.second last time out. If you does that, you will break the world

:15:15. > :15:20.record. Not sure about that but he will go faster, you are right. He is

:15:21. > :15:28.Elaine four, the fastest qualifier, is a good place name to be. He will

:15:29. > :15:32.be happier with that. France had a fantastic 2012 with four gold

:15:33. > :15:46.medals. I think he is the best and only shot, isn't he?

:15:47. > :15:56.Bortolami There is Brazil. I think their last hast of a medal in this

:15:57. > :16:04.Olympic Games. Fratus. He could medal. But then so could Adrian,

:16:05. > :16:11.Govorov, and Manaudou and Proud. It is so tight.

:16:12. > :16:17.OK the crowd now, Bruno, Bruno! This is great. We need complete silence

:16:18. > :16:24.for the start of this. These guys are twitchy at the beginning.

:16:25. > :16:32.It's like a boxing match. Well, when they shout Bruno, it is!

:16:33. > :16:39.The fastest human beings in water. The final of the men's 50m

:16:40. > :16:45.freestyle. For the title Olympic champion.

:16:46. > :16:49.Manaudou of France, the fastest qualifier in four. Great Britain's

:16:50. > :16:59.Ben Proud up in lane two with the red hat.

:17:00. > :17:05.Well, the piecest starter in the heats and the semis has been Ben

:17:06. > :17:11.Proud. He had another good start. But a really good start is Bradley

:17:12. > :17:15.Tandy of South Africa. They are all in a good line.

:17:16. > :17:22.Ervin is going well. Can he get the gold medal 16 years after getting it

:17:23. > :17:29.in 2000? Yes, he can. Ervin has won the gold. The silver to Manaudou and

:17:30. > :17:38.the bronze to Nathan Adrian. Fourth, Ben Proud. What a swim from him!

:17:39. > :17:44.What a race! Anthony Ervin! 35 years of age. The oldest ever Olympic

:17:45. > :17:51.champion in the swimming pool! Wow! Well, what a story! What a story.

:17:52. > :17:58.I tell you what, that was unbelievable. 1100ths of a second. I

:17:59. > :18:04.know what that feels like. And a real twitch at the bottom of lane

:18:05. > :18:11.eight, Tandy. Ben Proud having a good start. But Anthony Ervin. I am

:18:12. > :18:16.glad you were calling the race. I could not she what was happening.

:18:17. > :18:22.You knee he would get it. He got it. Look at this. I hope we see the

:18:23. > :18:28.celebrations. He punches the water and nearly hits Manaudou in the lane

:18:29. > :18:36.next to him. Sydney 2000. Gold medal, 50

:18:37. > :18:42.freestyle, Rio, 2016, gold medal, 50 freestyle. Regaining his Olympic

:18:43. > :18:48.title 16 years after he won it last. Anthony Ervin of the USA,

:18:49. > :18:53.phenomenal. The Olympic champion. Manaudou with a silver. Nathan

:18:54. > :19:03.Adrian with a second bronze and Ben Proud must be so proud with fourth.

:19:04. > :19:07.Well den to Ben Proud. He is with Sharron now.

:19:08. > :19:14.Ben, you must be pleased. A great swim. You put together three great

:19:15. > :19:20.times. That is our sixth fourth in the pool. Brilliant but just

:19:21. > :19:25.missing. We are up against the toughest

:19:26. > :19:31.competition in the world. I am chuffed with that. I would have

:19:32. > :19:36.liked to have swam faster and get in the medals but to see Anthony Ervin

:19:37. > :19:42.it gave me goose bumps. Absolutely. Think of the years in

:19:43. > :19:47.front of you. You are 21, he is 35. You are loving the sport every time

:19:48. > :19:51.you get in? Yes. Definitely. It is a long time to wait for the next one.

:19:52. > :19:56.But I feel motivated. The starts have been good. It shows great

:19:57. > :20:02.signs. I am really going to focus on the 50. Duncan Scott is leaving the

:20:03. > :20:05.100. So it takes the weight off my shoulders. See what happens in the

:20:06. > :20:12.future. And let's see what Fran is going to

:20:13. > :20:16.do. She has done well. She is still improving. Looking

:20:17. > :20:22.forward to see what she does here. Hopefully to bring back a medal.

:20:23. > :20:25.Well done. I'm sure we will see you at the worlds next year and the

:20:26. > :20:30.Commonwealth Games in a month's time.

:20:31. > :20:33.Thank you very much. The 50 metres freestyle, and the

:20:34. > :20:38.fastest man on the planet in the pool.

:20:39. > :20:45.Look at this. Yes, up with Manaudou in lane four.

:20:46. > :20:51.But Ervin's arm turn over. Basically keeping the head down. When it comes

:20:52. > :20:57.to the wall. It is out of a 100th of a second. It is hard to split. But

:20:58. > :21:03.pleased that Ervin did win it because of his story. But it is such

:21:04. > :21:08.a short race. It must go right. Anthony Ervin, whether it comes to

:21:09. > :21:12.it, after winning the Olympics 16 years ago, he got it right.

:21:13. > :21:19.As good as Michael Phelps is, he is not the fastest man on the planet.

:21:20. > :21:27.You have been it, though? A couple of times! That is hugely

:21:28. > :21:31.motivational for Ben Proud. We keep talking about age, strength, look at

:21:32. > :21:36.the leap?! I know. The thing is that everything you do

:21:37. > :21:40.in your training for a 50 sprint, any of it, really, it is specific to

:21:41. > :21:45.what you do. Everyone is taking on a straight arm

:21:46. > :21:50.technique. The reason is that when the arm comes over they catch

:21:51. > :21:54.straight away, rather than a bent arm stretching forward. Everyone is

:21:55. > :21:59.doing it now. The event is getting faster and faster and it is tighter

:22:00. > :22:04.and tighter. Well, a fascinating night in the

:22:05. > :22:08.pool. We have had surprises, celebration, hard lines for Ben

:22:09. > :22:13.Proud finishing fourth but Jazz Carlin took the silver medal in the

:22:14. > :22:19.800m freestyle. We enjoy her ceremony later on. And then the

:22:20. > :22:26.semi-finals in the 50m free. But now back to Jason. Well, an interesting

:22:27. > :22:31.night in the first evening night in the Olympics sessions, let's catch

:22:32. > :22:36.up with the events with Gabby. When you left us there was real

:22:37. > :22:41.drama. Greg Rutherford, the Olympic champion had had two no jumps. Talk

:22:42. > :22:46.about the third jump being a jump filled with jeopardy. It was a do or

:22:47. > :22:51.die to stay in the Olympic Games. If he wants to go for glory again in

:22:52. > :22:57.what could be another Super Saturday tomorrow he had to post a distance

:22:58. > :23:01.in the third jump to qualify him through to tomorrow's long jump

:23:02. > :23:08.final. Steve Backley watched his third jump.

:23:09. > :23:16.He needs something around 7.85. It is actually 7.84. The Czech Republic

:23:17. > :23:20.is in 12th place. It isle.15 auto qualifying or top 12.

:23:21. > :23:25.He will take either. Greg Rutherford. Round three of the long

:23:26. > :23:31.jump qualification. Well, I think it is a value countryside is jump. The

:23:32. > :23:40.thumbs up from Colin Jackson. It is. The white flag is raised. It looks

:23:41. > :23:45.about 7.90. This is close. He just missed timed that ever so

:23:46. > :23:54.slightly. 11 centimetres to spare. So good air wearness. As you expect.

:23:55. > :24:01.Well, hearts in our mouths. He wants to know where he is on the board.

:24:02. > :24:05.7.90. That should be enough. Two consecutive pulls of 16

:24:06. > :24:12.athletes. But if anyone... Let's have a look. There are a few

:24:13. > :24:18.athletes capable of pushing Greg Rutherford down the rankings. He is

:24:19. > :24:24.in 10th place. We need no more of one or two max. 12 progress to

:24:25. > :24:30.tomorrow's final. At the moment Greg Rutherford is in it.

:24:31. > :24:35.Talk about doing it by the skin of your teeth. Greg Rutherford was

:24:36. > :24:42.asked a few questions about that by Phil Jones after.

:24:43. > :24:46.Well, Greg, you gave us a few pap Iations.

:24:47. > :24:50.I have to apologise to mum and dad. I have probably caused a few less

:24:51. > :24:55.hairs. Qualifications can go either way. Fantastic or a nightmare. I did

:24:56. > :25:00.not get it right on the first two approaches on the warm up. It is a

:25:01. > :25:05.fast runway. Last year I got it in, it was perfect. Today I struggled.

:25:06. > :25:09.The last one I knew I had to get a half decent one to qualify. I took a

:25:10. > :25:15.lot of confidence from the first two. The second, a marginal foul was

:25:16. > :25:20.a good jump. So I knew I was in a good place to jump. If I was

:25:21. > :25:24.conservative I would be through. I am through. That is the main

:25:25. > :25:27.concern. So after the second jump, not

:25:28. > :25:32.feeling the pressure? There is always a lot of pressure. I have not

:25:33. > :25:37.been in that position for a while. Maybe the first Olympics. I drew on

:25:38. > :25:42.everything I have had before. I have been in this environment many times.

:25:43. > :25:47.I am generally pretty good at getting through. I took a safety

:25:48. > :25:51.approach to the last one. I did what I needed to do. Tomorrow will be a

:25:52. > :25:56.different game. After the first two I will be confident. Now I know

:25:57. > :25:59.where to start on the runway properly. We hopefully will see

:26:00. > :26:06.something good tomorrow. We hope so. Another Super Saturday.

:26:07. > :26:12.Yes, hopefully, seeing how Jess has done. And Kat bringing up the rear.

:26:13. > :26:17.A special evening. As much as it may look ridiculous, I

:26:18. > :26:23.have gone through on 7.90. I am happy and in good shape. Again,

:26:24. > :26:27.sorry, mum and dad, I do apologise. Is that for putting them through it?

:26:28. > :26:33.It is not a case of how you get there but getting there. He alluded

:26:34. > :26:38.to his experience, and that is how he got through the third jump,

:26:39. > :26:43.taking positives from the second no-jump. Are you worried he will not

:26:44. > :26:47.put it to bed? Or with the experience he starts fresh? I am

:26:48. > :26:53.more confident hearing the interview. I was nervous for him.

:26:54. > :26:58.You see athletes mess up badly on the third attempt. But his

:26:59. > :27:03.experience comes into play. He did not panic. He felt good. He was

:27:04. > :27:08.running well. He always runs well. We don't see him make fouls like

:27:09. > :27:14.that. So it sounds like he is in a good place mentally. So rest assured

:27:15. > :27:18.he will iron out the problems. It is a fresh competition tomorrow.

:27:19. > :27:24.OK, he alluded there to the heptathlon. What a Saturday it could

:27:25. > :27:29.be. Let's go and visit the fourth heat of the 200m. A really important

:27:30. > :27:34.race for Jess and Kat to put a big score on the board to put points to

:27:35. > :27:39.carry through overnight to the second day. Andrew Cotter is your

:27:40. > :27:46.commentator. Five of the six going through. Two

:27:47. > :27:49.women in the field have been below 23 seconds, they are Jessica

:27:50. > :27:53.Ennis-Hill and Katrina Johnson-Thompson. Johnson-Thompson

:27:54. > :27:57.has done it but Ennis-Hill is a little down on that.

:27:58. > :28:05.The final to the 200m in the heptathlon.

:28:06. > :28:10.So away they go cleanly. A good start by Jessica Ennis-Hill. Working

:28:11. > :28:13.well off Akela Jones. Katrina Johnson-Thompson moving nicely.

:28:14. > :28:17.Look at the speed of Johnson-Thompson. She is around the

:28:18. > :28:21.bend. Jessica Ennis-Hill trying to get back. The two Britons.

:28:22. > :28:28.Johnson-Thompson chasing down the line, chasing a time. The clock

:28:29. > :28:31.stops at 23.27. Some way outside of her personal best, the season best.

:28:32. > :28:36.Jessica Ennis-Hill coming through in second. But that reiterates it is

:28:37. > :28:40.perhaps not a flying track for the sprinters. Jessica Ennis-Hill will

:28:41. > :28:45.take the lead with that time. We will confirm what it is and confirm

:28:46. > :28:50.her position. But moving ahead of Nafissatou Thiam back to the top of

:28:51. > :28:54.the board. But not a flying track. Perhaps not flying conditions or

:28:55. > :28:58.tired athletes. But not necessarily the quickest times, Colin? No, they

:28:59. > :29:06.were not. The speed merchants will be on the track shortly in the

:29:07. > :29:10.women's 100m qualifying. But we saw Katrina running disappointedly for

:29:11. > :29:15.herself. The race was run very well. She has this good rhythm a really

:29:16. > :29:20.nice groove about her run, Kat. Fluid. But Jess, is always telling

:29:21. > :29:25.us she is the champion. Hanging tonne the title. If someone is to

:29:26. > :29:30.take it from her, they will have to battle with her to do that. Always

:29:31. > :29:39.working hard to the line. She will go to bed feeling confident that

:29:40. > :29:42.things are going her way. Well, what an accomplished first day

:29:43. > :29:49.from Jess. We are used to seeing this from you. The top of the

:29:50. > :29:56.leaderboard going into day two. How do you assess the performances? A

:29:57. > :29:59.mixed day. Happy with the hurdles, a little mixed with the high jump.

:30:00. > :30:03.Obviously disappointed with the shot put. Throwing better than that, so

:30:04. > :30:07.that is hard and frustrating. A little down on the 200 but generally

:30:08. > :30:12.happy. And the last race, a stronger event,

:30:13. > :30:16.are you looking at the points thinking you want to be on top of

:30:17. > :30:21.the leaderboard, now you can be? I am trying to better myself against

:30:22. > :30:24.what I have done so far this season. Putting the events together and

:30:25. > :30:27.seeing what I come out with. You have been in the situation many

:30:28. > :30:33.times before and coming through with a gold medal. What is it in your

:30:34. > :30:36.mindset that allows you to do that? I'm not sure.

:30:37. > :30:40.I think, definitely the experience of having lots of championships and

:30:41. > :30:44.competitions like this under my belt. But it is always different.

:30:45. > :30:49.The emotions are always different. It is so demanding. So I have to go

:30:50. > :30:54.away, rest up and come back strong tomorrow.

:30:55. > :30:59.Dpus it feel different coming in as a defending Olympic champion? It

:31:00. > :31:04.feels amazing, to be honest, to have the titles, to be here at the second

:31:05. > :31:08.Olympics. It is very special. Trying to enjoy it, although it is

:31:09. > :31:11.stressful. But amazing to be here. Great stuff. We wish you well for

:31:12. > :31:24.tomorrow. Thank you. Cheers.

:31:25. > :31:27.Katarina Johnson-Thompson in fourth place tonight. She spoke to Phil

:31:28. > :31:37.Jones as well. A day of mixed emotions, that

:31:38. > :31:43.fantastic high jump, not so good shot put. How would you assess the

:31:44. > :31:48.day? I feel like my high jump, I was in really good shape. I felt in

:31:49. > :31:56.better shape for my 200. Really disappointed with my shot put. They

:31:57. > :32:00.bit down at the minute. Tell me the emotions first of all, you cleared

:32:01. > :32:06.198, a new British record in the high jump. At that point, what are

:32:07. > :32:12.you thinking you need to do? The shot put not one of your strongest

:32:13. > :32:20.events. I was not expecting it to put it at 30 metres or anything, but

:32:21. > :32:25.just over 12. It seems a particularly fast track. They were

:32:26. > :32:30.not exhilarating times but your time still a decent one. Does give that

:32:31. > :32:35.-- does that give you any kind of impetus going forward? Not really,

:32:36. > :32:40.it is one of my strongest events. It is hard at this time of night.

:32:41. > :32:45.Keeping you out in the cold at this time of night but it is no excuse

:32:46. > :32:50.because we are all in the same boat. Second day tomorrow, how will you

:32:51. > :32:56.sleep tonight? Very well, I am tired! Tomorrow, we saw what

:32:57. > :33:00.happened last year, you learned a lot from what happened last year so

:33:01. > :33:05.you will go in with confidence? I will try to jump in the first round

:33:06. > :33:11.and go on from there. We wish you well tomorrow.

:33:12. > :33:18.That was about 20 minutes ago, I hope she is asleep already because

:33:19. > :33:22.it has been a long day. It is 11:05pm local time here and she is

:33:23. > :33:28.going to bed a bit down on herself. She shouldn't, she has to learn not

:33:29. > :33:30.to do that. It is the heats for the 100 metres and we are in heat five

:33:31. > :34:05.already. Two to go through automatically and

:34:06. > :34:14.bustle over with a bit of work to do. Swoboda leading at the moment.

:34:15. > :34:19.Good run by Swoboda. I think Bata Laner just took it on the line. The

:34:20. > :34:25.camera focuses on Swoboda who ran so well. What a talent she is, so quick

:34:26. > :34:30.out of the block. She always has been. She has just turned 19. I

:34:31. > :34:42.think by the letter might have just got that, they were the two to go

:34:43. > :34:49.through. We know Swoboda starts very quickly and as good indoors. She did

:34:50. > :34:54.have some work to do. I was thinking, does that look like

:34:55. > :35:02.someone who has run 10.7 this year? Not at all. You would think she

:35:03. > :35:08.would be to claw it back quite quickly. She took it right on the

:35:09. > :35:14.line before she did anything. You can see she is working hard and

:35:15. > :35:21.driving well. Now, look at Swoboda, still keeping her form, holding

:35:22. > :35:29.everything together. If after letter is going to come past, she has to

:35:30. > :35:31.work to make that happen. Good run from the 19-year-old, questions from

:35:32. > :35:45.Bafta letter. -- Bartoletta. Bartoletta and Swoboda going through

:35:46. > :35:57.automatically. That was heat five, let's go back to

:35:58. > :36:04.heat one and Andrew Cotter was calling this one as well.

:36:05. > :36:11.You might be watching this in bed which we positively encourage! A lot

:36:12. > :36:15.of people have televisions in the bedroom this day and age, this

:36:16. > :36:19.modern world. I don't quite understand it myself. I don't did it

:36:20. > :36:26.encourages good sleep patterns, watching electronic devices before

:36:27. > :36:30.snoozing. The first of the whirring's 100 metres. Some

:36:31. > :36:37.preliminaries this morning. The just firm things up for the line-ups this

:36:38. > :36:51.evening. In this first of eight, we have a Ahoure. She ran the joint

:36:52. > :36:56.third quickest time this year behind Thompson and Gardiner. World

:36:57. > :37:12.silver-medallist in Moscow three years ago. The Ivory Coast has two

:37:13. > :37:16.very quick women. Always a smile. There is Desiree Henry, Britain's

:37:17. > :37:23.fastest woman this year with 11.06 in California in April. She finished

:37:24. > :37:30.behind Asha Philip in the UK Championships. I suppose the journey

:37:31. > :37:35.is complete for Desiree Henry from lighting the flame four years ago to

:37:36. > :37:42.the start line here. Natalia Pohrebnyak of the Ukraine. Winner of

:37:43. > :37:47.the seventh Ukrainian national title this year. Way Longley of China in

:37:48. > :38:10.name three. Desiree Henry goes in lane eight.

:38:11. > :38:15.Apple go through automatically. Eight fastest losers over the eight

:38:16. > :38:19.heats. -- two go through automatically. Desiree Henry will be

:38:20. > :38:36.looking to keep pace with Ahoure. Cleanly away and Desiree Henry left

:38:37. > :38:40.a little bit by Ahoure. Here comes Desiree Henry running quickly and

:38:41. > :38:46.strongly. An impressive run for Desiree Henry who comes through to

:38:47. > :38:49.take it. 11.09. We talked about it not being perhaps the greatest track

:38:50. > :38:57.but very impressive from Desiree Henry. Ahoure went very smartly.

:38:58. > :39:03.That was a strong run from Desiree Henry. She spoke to feel afterwards.

:39:04. > :39:14.-- Phil. Desiree Henry getting off to a

:39:15. > :39:22.fantastic start and Phil Jones was waiting to chat to her as he always

:39:23. > :39:26.is afterwards. Congratulations, tremendous performance. Four years

:39:27. > :39:32.ago, you help to light the cauldron, now you are lighting up the track.

:39:33. > :39:36.It is unreal. I'm not taking this experience for granted. I saw my

:39:37. > :39:40.line-up and I thought every round towns, go out and execute and have

:39:41. > :39:47.fun. My coach has done an amazing job. There is no pressure, I am 20

:39:48. > :39:53.years old, I am enjoying my first Olympics and having some fun. Would

:39:54. > :39:57.you enjoy it and soak it up? Definitely, behind-the-scenes, it is

:39:58. > :40:01.nice and relaxed but once I get on the track I know I have a job to do

:40:02. > :40:05.and I had been working so hard and I don't want to throw it away by not

:40:06. > :40:12.being focused. Focus is how I got myself here. It has been going good.

:40:13. > :40:18.You are running around 11. You will be in the mix tomorrow. Most

:40:19. > :40:22.definitely, the performance today was amazing. 11 felt nice and

:40:23. > :40:27.relaxed and the pressure is really an tomorrow and things could

:40:28. > :40:33.definitely happen. Thank you. And thank you for staying up at home.

:40:34. > :40:38.Have a good night. Her enthusiasm is infectious. That semifinal is

:40:39. > :40:43.tomorrow night, 9pm local time, one o'clock in the UK. Good run from

:40:44. > :40:47.Desiree Henry. We have had a really good shot put final this evening so

:40:48. > :40:55.let's show you how it all panned out. Steve Backley was across this.

:40:56. > :41:02.A dramatic end to a fantastic competition. Valerie Adams in the

:41:03. > :41:06.lead at this point. In the last round, was on the brink of making

:41:07. > :41:10.history and taking his third Olympic title until Michelle Carter of the

:41:11. > :41:14.United States took to the circle. She hadn't thrown beyond 20 metres

:41:15. > :41:20.this year. She ranked fifth in the world down the left sector popped it

:41:21. > :41:28.over 20 metres for a new national record. No American women has won

:41:29. > :41:36.the women's shot put the 56 years. As she went into the lead with that

:41:37. > :41:44.effort of 20.6 three. Valerie Adams watching on, having nearly snatched

:41:45. > :41:55.away from her. The big Kiwi had a chance to respond. You can see Adams

:41:56. > :41:58.there, 20.63. She took the title in Portland, Oregon earlier this year.

:41:59. > :42:12.This was Adams' response. It was over 20 metres. But

:42:13. > :42:18.amazingly, it wasn't enough. For the majority of the competition, Adams

:42:19. > :42:22.had the competition won. 20.42, her best in the second round and she

:42:23. > :42:28.thought she had done enough but right at the very final round, with

:42:29. > :42:35.just two throws remaining, Michelle Carter of the United States snatched

:42:36. > :42:41.the gold away from the big Kiwi. Deprived her of that third

:42:42. > :42:44.consecutive Olympic gold medal. In an amazing and brilliant

:42:45. > :42:50.performance, a wonderful performance from Michelle Carter. And an Olympic

:42:51. > :42:54.gold medal. Congratulations all round. A good throw in the last

:42:55. > :43:02.throw for Adams but only enough for silver. An amazing performance and a

:43:03. > :43:11.great competition. There is your confirmation of the medals. Anita

:43:12. > :43:18.Martin also competed very well. Michelle Carter in the very last

:43:19. > :43:27.round, 20.63. An American record and a gold medal. Sophie Hitchon in the

:43:28. > :43:34.hammer qualification. She was fourth in the world Championships last

:43:35. > :43:38.year. She carried a foul in the first round and she stepped into for

:43:39. > :43:46.this second-round effort, looking to go beyond 72 metres. It wasn't quite

:43:47. > :43:56.that, it was over 70 metres. At the time, that took her into tenth

:43:57. > :44:04.place. And it was enough to win it. Not quite firing as she did last

:44:05. > :44:11.year in Beijing. Yet. It is a mooring final for that women's

:44:12. > :44:16.hammer and Sophie Hitchon will be involved. Good balance, that was her

:44:17. > :44:21.best throw. She didn't quite get past that in the first round. 11th

:44:22. > :44:28.place, 12 to qualify. So, there is a need to -- Anita

:44:29. > :44:59.Wlodarcyzk of Poland. Well done on reaching yet another

:45:00. > :45:05.Olympic final. How nerve wracking was it, such a close competition in

:45:06. > :45:08.qualifying? I made it a little bit difficult for myself which I could

:45:09. > :45:13.have done better. I could have been in better shape but waiting at the

:45:14. > :45:18.end to see if the other girls through well, wasn't what I wanted

:45:19. > :45:21.to be doing. But I am through and hopefully I will pull it together in

:45:22. > :45:27.the final. Qualifying can go either way. Greg Rutherford had two fouls

:45:28. > :45:32.and just made it through so what is it like to go through that? You want

:45:33. > :45:36.some focus on the final but you have to negotiate that tricky period

:45:37. > :45:40.first. Qualification is always the hardest thing and some people can

:45:41. > :45:44.get carried away and focus on the final but you have to get there

:45:45. > :45:48.first. Now I have done that out of the way, I will focus on that now.

:45:49. > :45:53.And you can tap into those memories of when you have reached the final

:45:54. > :45:57.before, last year for example? Setting British records and pushing

:45:58. > :46:01.for a medal. Anything can happen when you get in the final. Hopefully

:46:02. > :46:07.my technique will be better and I will perform better in the final.

:46:08. > :46:13.Does it feel massively different different in this Olympics compared

:46:14. > :46:18.to London? I feel I have more experience now. I didn't really know

:46:19. > :46:22.what was going on then! But now I do and I am learning from each thing. I

:46:23. > :46:30.hope you can take that experience forward into the final.

:46:31. > :46:40.Ship So, Sophie Hitchin into the hammer final.

:46:41. > :46:46.Asha Phillip, along with Desiree Henry has gone through.

:46:47. > :46:53.This may be a slightly more difficult heat here for Asha

:46:54. > :46:57.Phillip. Asha has been running so well.

:46:58. > :47:02.Watch out for William, the Jamaican who has gone under 11 seconds this

:47:03. > :47:08.year. But Asha has gotten a blistering

:47:09. > :47:15.start. Only the top two go through. Asha

:47:16. > :47:20.will have to hang on for the fastest loser spot. 11 seconds flat. I

:47:21. > :47:27.suspected this may be the case. But looking down the list of the fastest

:47:28. > :47:32.losers, I have the benefit of doing that, then, Asha has to run well

:47:33. > :47:39.under 11.4. I think she did that safely. So far

:47:40. > :47:47.with two heats to come, well, she is coming through as 11734. -- 11.34,

:47:48. > :47:52.so OK at the minute. I suspect she will go through.

:47:53. > :47:59.I think you are right. She took on the race well indeed. Came out of

:48:00. > :48:04.the blocks well. Did not get distracted by those around her. So a

:48:05. > :48:10.really good start to do what she has dawned I think she could get through

:48:11. > :48:15.to the semi-finals. Out of the blocks assertive, wasn't

:48:16. > :48:23.she? She took a lot of ground to the other runners around her. But Ayi

:48:24. > :48:32.was the class of the field. 11 dead. Comfortable and chilling

:48:33. > :48:39.down. I was wondering, we know Shelly-Ann

:48:40. > :48:45.Fraser-Pryce is looking quick without trying but is 11.4, 11.8

:48:46. > :48:51.getting you into the final? It is not that quick? But think of Desiree

:48:52. > :48:57.Henry, close to the personal best. It is what they are capable of. But

:48:58. > :49:05.the next seat to come is where the favourite is. It could be Elaine

:49:06. > :49:10.Thompson from Jamaica. Well, as we watched that replay

:49:11. > :49:16.back. The isolated shot of you. Were you pleased with what you saw? With

:49:17. > :49:25.your form? Not really, no. You want to keep progressing.

:49:26. > :49:30.Carmen Belo is great. But I know that my body is great. This is the

:49:31. > :49:34.best I am moving. Happy to be here. Proud of myself for getting this

:49:35. > :49:39.far. But as long as I can get to the second round. I can progress and get

:49:40. > :49:42.better. So looking well. Obviously tomorrow

:49:43. > :49:48.it goes up another notch? Definitely. That is the good thing

:49:49. > :49:52.for me to get into the semis. It is different racing at midnight. Trying

:49:53. > :49:57.to get used to the timing and the weather but I'm British. This is

:49:58. > :50:02.nothing to us. But I have had to challenge myself and I am good at

:50:03. > :50:05.challenges. I know that I can do better.

:50:06. > :50:11.How strange is it running so late? I don't think it is right for us

:50:12. > :50:18.athletes to do it. We are human too. We should be asleep. But it is the

:50:19. > :50:22.Olympics, so to do it at 1.00am, you only get one shot at these things, I

:50:23. > :50:28.am here to do my best. That's what I'm going to do.

:50:29. > :50:55.Thank you very much, Asha. Let's clarify the results there.

:50:56. > :51:05.On to heat seven. Late into the night. 11. .30pm. Elaine Thompson is

:51:06. > :51:11.lane nine. Fourth all time in the 100m after 10.70 this season. She is

:51:12. > :51:16.the quickest in the world this year. She's accepting the cheers and the

:51:17. > :51:20.adulation and the appreciation of the crowd in the stadium. A good bit

:51:21. > :51:25.of noise. Certainly not a full Stadium. But

:51:26. > :51:35.Elaine Thompson is going in nine. A lot of support for the Brazilian

:51:36. > :51:45.athlete. Santos in lane three. Semoy Hackett in lane three. Melissa Bre,

:51:46. > :52:03.nn in lane four. -- Breen.

:52:04. > :52:12.The starter there, the man in the hat is not happy. The official.

:52:13. > :52:17.He felt had had a quiet evening and wanted to do something.

:52:18. > :52:22.The crowd are being noisy. It is 11.30 local time. Maybe they have

:52:23. > :52:30.come in from a night out and popped into the athletics. You are welcome!

:52:31. > :52:33.A huge number of Jamaican fans. But Santos, the Brazilian, asking for a

:52:34. > :52:39.little bit of hush as the Brazilians are making noise for her.

:52:40. > :52:46.And the Brazilians, a lot of yellow and gold in the Stadium tonight.

:52:47. > :52:56.Yes, getting a bit boisterous down there.

:52:57. > :53:09.Ah, it's the Santos fans. So once again. The penultimate heat of the

:53:10. > :53:16.100m for the women. We do need some quiet... It gets

:53:17. > :53:21.them away and away cleanly for Santos. Elaine Thompson on the

:53:22. > :53:24.outside moving through. Semoy Hackett through.

:53:25. > :53:30.A good run by Santos in second place. 11.21 again. A hint of a

:53:31. > :53:36.breeze in their faces. But that is why the crowd was roaring. Santos

:53:37. > :53:43.through behind Elaine Thompson. But once again, Elaine Thompson. Below

:53:44. > :53:50.11 seconds. Running 11.21. So, the only woman to have gone below 11

:53:51. > :53:54.seconds is her fellow country woman, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce with her

:53:55. > :53:58.10.96. So sluggish times for women who have gone quickly.

:53:59. > :54:03.But that is the strongest head wind we have seen.

:54:04. > :54:08.-1, not so strong, I must admit. But interesting. I would like to see how

:54:09. > :54:14.Elaine Thompson runs the race with the heads on.

:54:15. > :54:19.I remember her running that race under 11, she rocketed out of the

:54:20. > :54:23.blocks. Here I think she has had a little more of a relaxed approach.

:54:24. > :54:28.The word that I would use in this competition. No real drive. Ambling

:54:29. > :54:32.down there. She is relaxed. Cantering down there. I don't think

:54:33. > :54:37.she is noticing how close everybody is to her. She probably looks to the

:54:38. > :54:45.right at the end and thinks, oh, that was close.

:54:46. > :54:56.Watch her from the blocks, bank, the gun goes. Works hard. Remember this

:54:57. > :55:03.lady has gone a sub-21.7. Then faster over the 100m flat. With

:55:04. > :55:09.the magical 10.70. But now totally at ease. Bouncing down the track. No

:55:10. > :55:16.effort. Running into a-1 head wind. Taking that heat in 11.21. I think

:55:17. > :55:21.there is more to come tomorrow. She goes safely through.

:55:22. > :55:32.Confirmation of the two automatic qualifiers ahead.

:55:33. > :55:42.Elaine Thompson. Rosangela Santos and Semoy Hackett.

:55:43. > :55:46.Ashha Phillip I think should be pretty safe.

:55:47. > :55:54.He is finding pinning that number on tough! He is a bit fingers and

:55:55. > :56:06.thumbs. She will do it herself! Bashful, is

:56:07. > :56:11.what it is! It is never that easy, it is upsidedown! Careful. I always

:56:12. > :56:12.said, how has nobody invented anything better than safety pins

:56:13. > :56:57.after all of these years. Carina Horn has been in good form.

:56:58. > :57:07.Then we have Rebekka Haase. That is in lane two. And there is Lalova,

:57:08. > :57:11.very experienced in lane one. She picked up a silver medal at the

:57:12. > :57:17.European Championships recently in Amsterdam. Carina Horn made it

:57:18. > :57:22.through to the London Diamond League final in her last race preparing for

:57:23. > :57:39.the Olympics. She has been close to her own national record. English

:57:40. > :57:44.Gardiner, 10.74. And 19-year-old Daryll Neita from

:57:45. > :57:52.Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers. There she is. What a superb year

:57:53. > :57:59.she's having. Qualified by right. Finishing top two at the trials,

:58:00. > :58:03.having run two qualification times. 11.23 is her personal best. Surely

:58:04. > :58:09.an opportunity for her despite the chill and everything else here in

:58:10. > :58:12.the Olympics. The first time, the first round.

:58:13. > :58:27.And the American champion is next to her.

:58:28. > :58:35.Gardiner gets out well. So does Lalova.

:58:36. > :58:42.Darryl Neita with lots of work to do to get close. Carina Horn to get

:58:43. > :58:49.second place. Ahead of Lalova. Neita was fourth.

:58:50. > :58:55.There are faster spots. She is distant of that. Somewhere

:58:56. > :59:00.around 11. .36. It could still get her through. Let's wait and see,

:59:01. > :59:06.Colin. An incredible experience for Daryll

:59:07. > :59:14.Neita. Running well. But what an experience.

:59:15. > :59:17.No, you're right. Neita, I hope she enjoyed that experience. Qualifying

:59:18. > :59:22.in the trials in the second position. It surprised many people.

:59:23. > :59:27.So it is great to see her here getting the experience. What you

:59:28. > :59:31.gain from being in the warm-up period with the best athletes,

:59:32. > :59:35.watching what they do, seeing how they prepare for the big races it

:59:36. > :59:39.majors a huge difference in the learning curve. So I am pleased that

:59:40. > :59:54.she is here and doing what she is doing.

:59:55. > :00:02.And there could be a tie for the 8th spot. No, sadly she is out.

:00:03. > :00:10.She will be joint ninth fastest, sadly.

:00:11. > :00:13.Still, a great relay team we have got, Colin. She is a big part of

:00:14. > :00:17.that. Absolutely. Definitely in the squad.

:00:18. > :00:24.They have been preparing well to go out there, to go under 42 seconds.

:00:25. > :00:27.That relay is a good team. She will be bitterly disappointed not to

:00:28. > :00:30.progress but hopefully gaining the experience along the way.

:00:31. > :00:55.So, confirmation, then. Unfortunately, my pins all came off

:00:56. > :00:57.at the beginning of the race. I didn't get a chance

:00:58. > :01:00.to do a run-up. But I'm happy to be at the Olympic

:01:01. > :01:06.Games. I would have liked to have

:01:07. > :01:10.done better at that. At the age of 19, so much you can

:01:11. > :01:15.take from an experience like that. What will be the lasting memory,

:01:16. > :01:18.the build-up, the preparation, And you've been part of such

:01:19. > :02:02.a successful squad and team this Can you just feel, can't you,

:02:03. > :02:20.the sadness there in her whole experience, it has come down,

:02:21. > :02:23.her distraction going on her number But perhaps people saying she needs

:02:24. > :02:28.to be bigger than that. I wish she had taken

:02:29. > :02:38.the pins from that guy. She was just like, give it

:02:39. > :02:48.to me and let me do it. It was very close for her,

:02:49. > :03:01.getting into that next round. And it's a diffiicult thing

:03:02. > :03:04.to watch because you know, you know she wanted this,

:03:05. > :03:06.she is in great shape, At 19, something like that can

:03:07. > :03:09.throw you off. A veteran, you may say, come on,

:03:10. > :03:15.you should know better. Even if you wake up and go back

:03:16. > :03:25.for a nap, it's all "I'm 19, at the Olympics,

:03:26. > :03:28.and I'm running These guys just want

:03:29. > :03:39.to get out there. And she has to understand

:03:40. > :03:43.all this experience, competing at this late hour,

:03:44. > :03:46.you know, is all good for her. She'll learn how to manage herself

:03:47. > :03:49.better as she progresses And we'll debate at length

:03:50. > :03:54.what the alternative is to those Maybe it's lasers

:03:55. > :03:58.on the heads, tattoos. So Dafne Schippers,

:03:59. > :04:18.lines up in lane 9. Her first race in what is going

:04:19. > :04:22.to be a very busy schedule. She's also got the quick Pinto

:04:23. > :04:25.of Germany in lane 5 And not such a good start from Pinto

:04:26. > :04:29.or Schippers either. The Colombian got away

:04:30. > :04:31.very, very quickly. Not the, not in greatest

:04:32. > :04:36.of starters. That wasn't one of her best

:04:37. > :04:42.but she's playing it a little bit She must have studied the form

:04:43. > :04:58.before she came here. As soon as I feel myself picking up

:04:59. > :05:05.the pace, a little glance to the left-hand side,

:05:06. > :05:07.and just edged away. Pinto, as expected,

:05:08. > :05:19.the only one to join her This

:05:20. > :06:19.She had a very controlled start. She didn't hammer it

:06:20. > :06:22.out of the blocks. An incredible amount of turnover

:06:23. > :06:25.to put herself yards in front Tells people, if you want

:06:26. > :06:29.this, come and get me. Very few occasions

:06:30. > :06:33.they come back to her. Here, a lovely controlled

:06:34. > :06:35.one from the blocks. And she ended up just switching down

:06:36. > :06:37.and coasting through. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce finishing

:06:38. > :07:04.very strongly and relaxed. Is there anything you've seen today

:07:05. > :07:06.to make you think that Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce can't be

:07:07. > :07:09.the first athlete ever to win 3 She hasn't been as smooth

:07:10. > :07:13.and dominant in the past few years. She suffered with a toe

:07:14. > :07:15.injury most of the year. And she is starting

:07:16. > :07:17.to run into shape. But if Thompson can get back

:07:18. > :07:23.to the form she displayed, the Americans, English Gardner,

:07:24. > :07:25.Bartoletta, and Tori Bowie, all of them are capable

:07:26. > :07:31.of running really fast. I think, those times

:07:32. > :07:33.weren't impressive. Everyone is getting used

:07:34. > :07:35.to running at midnight. It only takes one time for veterans,

:07:36. > :07:44.I think we'll see faster times from then, and start to see

:07:45. > :07:48.the field come together. It will be tough for

:07:49. > :07:50.Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. She's the best of the field,

:07:51. > :07:55.but her preparation hasn't We have seen Valerie Adams fail

:07:56. > :08:08.to be the first to do that. It will be interesting to see

:08:09. > :08:16.whether they of them pull them off. I'm so fragile at

:08:17. > :08:34.this time of night. At the end, it's fair to say that

:08:35. > :08:43.Jess has come out smiling. And Kat looked like

:08:44. > :08:46.she had it and lost it. You have to approach

:08:47. > :08:50.the heptathlon for the long game. You can't be down on

:08:51. > :08:54.yourself after day one. The ability to reflect,

:08:55. > :08:57.put it in a box and leave it behind She has to put that into perspective

:08:58. > :09:09.and move on. She can turn around her fortunes

:09:10. > :09:15.very easy indeed. And looking back to last year,

:09:16. > :09:21.when she crashed out. How are you feel being her

:09:22. > :09:32.progress in 12 months? More of an improved ability to put

:09:33. > :09:37.a poor performance behind her. She hasn't learned that

:09:38. > :09:42.lesson from last year. I'm not very confident,

:09:43. > :09:48.based on the body language that I saw at the interview,

:09:49. > :09:51.the very flat affect that I saw But I don't know if she can

:09:52. > :09:56.take advantage of that And it starts with long jump,

:09:57. > :10:05.one of her strongest. But I don't know

:10:06. > :10:09.if that's the issue. I don't expect a good

:10:10. > :10:12.long jump if she doesn't And just to remind you of the PBs

:10:13. > :10:23.that they both hold going At the Anniversary Games,

:10:24. > :10:39.she was fantastic. She's a world class

:10:40. > :10:42.long jumper in her day. Ennis-Hill is capable

:10:43. > :10:51.of throwing very far. What we've highlighted here,

:10:52. > :10:53.she's able to take the disappointments on the chin

:10:54. > :10:55.and that won't affect She'll bounce back, she'll be

:10:56. > :11:02.fighting to the bitter end and Kat needs to be there to fight

:11:03. > :11:04.until the end. We want the 800m to be one heck

:11:05. > :11:08.of a head to head, don't we? All it takes is for her

:11:09. > :11:15.to jump 6.80 plus. I think the lights are going

:11:16. > :11:28.to go out. And let's be honest,

:11:29. > :11:33.we got the point where there weren't Let's sleep on the idea that

:11:34. > :11:45.tomorrow maybe a repeat of Super It may not be a Super Saturday

:11:46. > :12:08.for Brazil, because I just I've been watching the swimming

:12:09. > :12:16.and the track and field, but I can't Brazil had 20 shots

:12:17. > :12:35.to Australia's 7. All the possession, many chances,

:12:36. > :12:37.but not an opportunity to put This would be an incredible

:12:38. > :12:42.upset for the hosts Jazz Carlin had her second medal

:12:43. > :13:16.of the Olympics. She's been fantastic,

:13:17. > :13:18.the past couple of years. And coming into this meet,

:13:19. > :13:20.more geared towards And stepping into this race,

:13:21. > :13:24.you kind of know that Katie It must have been really

:13:25. > :13:30.tough for her. She certainly has an army of fans,

:13:31. > :13:48.and at the risk of sounding a bit like a mum, which I

:13:49. > :13:57.am, it's so nice to see her smile. But she had a few curve balls and

:13:58. > :14:03.upsets because she's kept fighting. All the early mornings

:14:04. > :14:06.and the sacrifice She's one of those people,

:14:07. > :14:18.I've got a soft spot You spend a lot of time

:14:19. > :14:21.following that line. Fran is still in the

:14:22. > :14:34.fight for a medal. And it turns out, can you believe

:14:35. > :14:46.this, at an Olympics, the bus driver bringing Fran

:14:47. > :14:48.and 3 other athletes got I don't think they got lost,

:14:49. > :14:52.the bus headed to a different venue. For the people at home,

:14:53. > :14:57.took a wrong turn and I know that Fran handles anything

:14:58. > :15:01.coming her way. Fran has been through

:15:02. > :15:06.everything as an athlete. I know she looked

:15:07. > :15:08.fantastic this morning. Another challenge to add

:15:09. > :15:15.to the list, the bus driver that Right, let's see Fran in heat one

:15:16. > :15:32.of the women's 50 free. The first semifinal,

:15:33. > :15:33.and Fran Halsall of And five, Bronte Campbell-Brown

:15:34. > :15:56.of Australia, the world champion. So goes into this,

:15:57. > :15:58.the first semifinal fastest. The red hat of Fran

:15:59. > :16:27.hal Saul in lane four. Very good under water,

:16:28. > :16:30.she's going to come up maybe second. But the red hat of

:16:31. > :16:40.Halsall, holding well. It looks like it may be may

:16:41. > :16:42.deeros at the moment. A huge cheer from the crowd

:16:43. > :16:49.because the Brazilian swimmer has come third,

:16:50. > :16:51.and she can well make She had a good

:16:52. > :17:10.reaction from the gun. Not as good as this morning,

:17:11. > :17:13.but a brilliant swim. And the crowd that stayed behind,

:17:14. > :17:15.really witnessed I'm pretty sure she'll make it,

:17:16. > :17:22.Andy. But Fran Halsall, we are going

:17:23. > :17:25.to see what the second one does. But Halsall will get

:17:26. > :17:31.and draw some significant confidence from that,

:17:32. > :17:33.tipping out Bronte If you watch the finish, didn't

:17:34. > :17:46.finish on the end of her stroke. The right arm in,

:17:47. > :17:51.a little bit short. Well, again, the Brazilians

:17:52. > :18:04.are having somebody to here Quite a story to tell us

:18:05. > :18:25.about tonight, haven't you? The whole Olympics had to be

:18:26. > :18:37.stopped for me tonight. We got on our bus, two hours

:18:38. > :18:40.before start of our race, It took us to the Olympic Stadium,

:18:41. > :18:47.40 minutes in the 40 minutes back to the village,

:18:48. > :18:51.and back to the pool for warm-up. My emotions and adrenaline

:18:52. > :18:58.were all over the place. For God's sake, the one thing

:18:59. > :19:01.I've been trying to do was keep my emotions

:19:02. > :19:03.in check for tomorrow night. If I can win my semi, yeah,

:19:04. > :19:10.I'm happy with that. That's where all the experience

:19:11. > :19:12.of all the years of You have medals of every colour

:19:13. > :19:19.from every competition going. Hopefully, I have earned myself

:19:20. > :19:24.the right to compete And this morning was so easy

:19:25. > :19:36.but tonight, a bit more rushed, If I get on the right

:19:37. > :19:41.bus tomorrow... We are so much looking

:19:42. > :19:45.forward to seeing you. Now, Fran has said so many times

:19:46. > :19:58.for her, it's all about being Do you think she's in the right head

:19:59. > :20:02.space to get a medal? That smile and that laugh,

:20:03. > :20:06.that's Fran in the right place. She goes into that

:20:07. > :20:10.final, fourth fastest. Let's see who she's going to be

:20:11. > :20:32.taking on in the second heat. Blume of Denmark.

:20:33. > :20:41.The fastest after the heats. Second semifinal,

:20:42. > :20:46.women's 50m freestyle. Campbell in sixth, defending

:20:47. > :20:48.champion Fran Halsall swam a really The defending champion

:20:49. > :20:56.from Holland up in two. It's really close, Cate Campbell now

:20:57. > :21:00.starting to come through. The yellow hat of Australia

:21:01. > :21:02.through from the bottom. She had the worst start

:21:03. > :21:16.by a decent amount. Campbell second, the defending

:21:17. > :21:24.champion third. So the top three

:21:25. > :21:26.beating Fran's time. Fran will go into the final fourth

:21:27. > :21:28.fastest. That's a really good

:21:29. > :21:35.place to be, fourth. In the yellow lanes in the left,

:21:36. > :21:42.Blume took a long time under water. And surprisingly getting

:21:43. > :21:46.the touch of that one. The race video, analyse that

:21:47. > :21:54.with your coach and get up Well, going to be

:21:55. > :21:57.an interesting final. The pressure is off

:21:58. > :21:59.in a lot of ways. She'll have a good lane,

:22:00. > :22:08.next to Cate Campbell. So the second semifinal

:22:09. > :22:09.of the women's 50m, So Blume of Denmark will go

:22:10. > :22:35.into the final fastest. And Fran Halsall will be

:22:36. > :22:41.between Cate Campbell and Simone Some of those ladies

:22:42. > :22:56.are looking so impressive. Only a quarter of the second

:22:57. > :23:06.separating all 8. It's one of those things,

:23:07. > :23:11.we saw it in the men's with err vin. We'll have that final

:23:12. > :23:25.for you tomorrow night. We are so pleased

:23:26. > :23:33.with Roger's shirt. Jazz doesn't think it's

:23:34. > :23:58.a lucky shirt. It's not years old I have

:23:59. > :24:07.only worn it 4 times. Can you bring it tomorrow and does

:24:08. > :24:53.it work for other members Brilliant guys. One of the big

:24:54. > :25:00.matches today was the tennis for the men's.

:25:01. > :25:07.Let's have a look at Rafael Nadal in the doubles. We join it with Spain.

:25:08. > :25:23.5-4 up. The Romanians are serving to stay in the match.

:25:24. > :25:34.He was trying to guide it through and he did.

:25:35. > :25:38.It took a lot of height on the lob. So it is dropping. It make it is a

:25:39. > :25:48.very tough shot to hit in this pressure cooker situation.

:25:49. > :26:15.Up on their feet once more. Third championship point.

:26:16. > :26:30.Third time! They celebrate with a huge hug.

:26:31. > :26:35.To end this classic contest. What a spectacle in this men's doubles,

:26:36. > :26:42.gold medal encounter. Great respect between the players.

:26:43. > :26:45.Phenomenal stuff. Well, such an amazing battle. Great

:26:46. > :26:51.tennis out there and the emotions, the drama.

:26:52. > :27:00.It had it all. And what a reaction from Mark and

:27:01. > :27:09.Rafa. They dropped to the court! Look at them... This is right up

:27:10. > :27:17.there. No question for Rafael Nadal. Do it with his buddy.

:27:18. > :27:21.And doing it for Spain. All the injuries that Rafael Nadal

:27:22. > :27:26.has had. The brasses illian crowd absolutely love the Spanish team and

:27:27. > :27:31.that is what it means. The medal table. There it is.

:27:32. > :27:41.Look at Great Britain. Up to seven golds. A terrific day at the 2016

:27:42. > :27:47.Olympic Games. So another golden day for Great Britain. But the last word

:27:48. > :27:51.goes to Bradley Wiggins, Britain's most decorated Olympian. Thank you

:27:52. > :27:55.very much indeed for watching. We shall she raiyokan see you on day

:27:56. > :28:00.eight. From all of us here, goodbye for now.

:28:01. > :28:06.Whatever happens now, I can always say I have got an Olympic medal.

:28:07. > :28:15.Great Britain, and it means that Great Britain wins the bronze medal.

:28:16. > :28:19.Come on, Bradley. The winner of the Britons medals, Bradley Wiggins for

:28:20. > :28:25.Great Britain. And Great Britain win the silver medal. This is the one.

:28:26. > :28:32.There it is, then. Bradley Wiggins wins the gold medal. The British

:28:33. > :28:41.quartet are the Olympic champions! Bradley Wiggins, he's a gold medal

:28:42. > :28:43.winner and an Olympic champion. It's gold and gold for Bradley

:28:44. > :28:50.Wiggins!
