:00:51. > :00:57.That moment of crossing the line and just having my family there in the

:00:58. > :01:01.crowd, just knowing that I had put all those events together, it had

:01:02. > :01:12.all gone all right, pure excitement, shock, an amazing feeling.

:01:13. > :01:29.Four years ago, London 2012 gave us a night we would never forget. And

:01:30. > :01:35.if we are very lucky, Rio could give as another night to remember in that

:01:36. > :01:39.stadium. Good afternoon. Welcome to day eight. Super Saturday was one of

:01:40. > :01:42.those, where will you? Moments. I was in London Hyde Park amongst

:01:43. > :01:47.thousands of complete strangers who in a matter of moments became best

:01:48. > :01:52.friends. Tonight could be that time for Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis-Hill to

:01:53. > :01:57.create even more memories. How special would that be? Right now,

:01:58. > :02:04.Great Britain are absolutely cracking up the medals. If we look

:02:05. > :02:09.at the medal table, we are up to 22, and third! That is a stunning sight.

:02:10. > :02:14.Actually, coming into day eight back in London, they were in exactly the

:02:15. > :02:19.same situation with 22 medals. They are doing all right, Team GB, and

:02:20. > :02:21.they are not done yet. Here is what is coming up this afternoon for you

:02:22. > :02:33.on day eight. We got water polo for you first up

:02:34. > :02:39.in London 2012 runners up Spain, going against China in the women's

:02:40. > :02:49.tournament. Beijing gold medallist Christine Ohuruogu makes her 2016

:02:50. > :02:53.bow. In the space of a couple of days, track cycling has given us

:02:54. > :02:58.world records, gold medals and memories we will never forget. We

:02:59. > :03:02.have more with Jason Kenny and the Great Britain women's team pursuit

:03:03. > :03:10.is taking to the track. Andy Murray is now just a couple of games away

:03:11. > :03:14.from attaining his Olympic gold medal -- retaining. He beat Steve

:03:15. > :03:22.Johnson. Next up for him, the Japanese. And then we will show you

:03:23. > :03:31.some badminton, as well. Chris Adcock and Gary Adcock hoping to end

:03:32. > :03:41.a 12 year wait for a British medal. -- Gabby Adcock. What have you got

:03:42. > :03:47.on BBC One? Before we tell you that, let's tell you what is on BBC Four.

:03:48. > :03:51.Just to remind you, the water polo coming up. China against Spain. Then

:03:52. > :03:55.we will be in the velodrome for track cycling. Athletics will

:03:56. > :04:02.feature Christine Ohuruogu. Back in the velodrome where the women's

:04:03. > :04:06.pursuit. Then tennis with Murray in action and badminton as well. I

:04:07. > :04:12.jumped the gun. I jumped the gun. What are you doing on BBC One? Let's

:04:13. > :04:18.see. They are right there in the real central Pavilion checking in on

:04:19. > :04:26.the badminton -- real central Pavilion. Next up, they are at the

:04:27. > :04:31.Lagoa Stadium checking in on the rowing. Both of the big cruise, the

:04:32. > :04:44.men's and women's eight taking to the water.

:04:45. > :05:04.Now, though, and BBC Four... We are going to the golf. Here's what

:05:05. > :05:13.happened yesterday. Marcus Fraser, Australia. Tries to take it in. This

:05:14. > :05:26.will be the first player up to ten under. That is a great shot.

:05:27. > :05:34.Magnificent shot from Marcus Fraser. You catch a guy who is playing like

:05:35. > :05:42.this? Fraser... Should be enough, though, for the birdie. He should

:05:43. > :05:50.stick that away a round of 69. I'm playing well, similar to yesterday.

:05:51. > :05:54.Didn't make as many putts. Got up to the hole and decided to go the other

:05:55. > :05:59.way instead of going in. Yesterday, they all went in. It felt really

:06:00. > :06:10.comfortable and I felt good about things.

:06:11. > :06:26.What a fabulous putt. Henrik Stenson, birdie at the first. A firm

:06:27. > :06:38.stroke. Oh, no. Perfect. Birdie, birdie start for Henrik Stenson.

:06:39. > :06:43.Wonderful shot from the Swede. Henrik Stenson finishes three under

:06:44. > :06:49.for the day and eight under, he is now. A couple of tired swings on the

:06:50. > :06:54.back nine, but I made some birdies and three under is never a bad

:06:55. > :07:05.score. We are right where we need to be at halfway.

:07:06. > :07:19.Straight in the whole! Bubba Watson, what a way to make eagle. Out of the

:07:20. > :07:24.bunker, it has a fair way to go up. Look at that for a second birdie

:07:25. > :07:37.opportunity. Birdie putt here. Very good-looking putt.

:07:38. > :07:47.Peters, 5-under, 9-under for the Championship. 6th hole, Britain's

:07:48. > :08:01.Justin Rose. Birdie gets to 6-under par.

:08:02. > :08:13.That will do nicely. He knew it was going in. 69 today, keeps pace,

:08:14. > :08:17.keeps me feeling good about things and gives me a good chance on the

:08:18. > :08:23.weekend. ORE ODUBA: The Australian Fraser

:08:24. > :08:31.still leading, as he has done from day one. Just after three o'clock

:08:32. > :08:37.your time, Thomas Peters, one behind. Henrik Stenson two behind

:08:38. > :08:42.the top dog. Justin Rose going just before 3pm your time. Four shots

:08:43. > :08:47.behind the leaders, he will try to close that gap later this afternoon.

:08:48. > :08:51.Let's go live to the maria pending reserve and check-in on conditions

:08:52. > :08:59.there. Plenty better than they were yesterday. The leaders are going off

:09:00. > :09:03.in a couple of hours. If golf is your thing, make sure you head over

:09:04. > :09:06.to the BBC Red Button. You can also watch it on the app and also the BBC

:09:07. > :09:24.sport website. To help you make even more of your

:09:25. > :09:29.real Olympic Games we got it all covered on the BBC. Alongside

:09:40. > :09:41.application or via connected TVs and game consoles. The best will be

:09:42. > :09:49.available on the Red Button via satellite, cable or your TV

:09:50. > :09:54.receiver. If that is not enough, you can download the BBC sport app,

:09:55. > :09:56.where you can set news and medal alerts and live event reminders so

:09:57. > :10:02.you can follow all your favourite sports. Loads of ways you can watch

:10:03. > :10:07.the action. Let's get things going on BBC Four, shall we? We are moving

:10:08. > :10:15.into the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre here. We like to think that BBC Four

:10:16. > :10:19.has been the home of water polo. 12 teams, two pools of six with the top

:10:20. > :10:24.four moving into the last eight, that is the men's. In the women's,

:10:25. > :10:28.they have eight teams, in two pools of four which means they all

:10:29. > :10:32.progress into the quarterfinal. Effectively, it is a seeding round

:10:33. > :10:40.for the quarterfinal. USA have won medals at every game is -- every

:10:41. > :10:46.Games since the games were introduced. They beat 's been Lowe

:10:47. > :10:51.Spain in the final. The two have already met in group B. The USA won

:10:52. > :10:59.by 11-4. They are in the last tie of the groups. It is against China, who

:11:00. > :11:00.are yet to register a point. Before we get into the water, here is your

:11:01. > :11:14.water Polo guide. Water polo has been an Olympic sport

:11:15. > :11:20.since 1900 in Paris. There are seven players in a team, six so outfield

:11:21. > :11:23.players and a goalkeeper. They are allowed six reserves and unlimited

:11:24. > :11:27.substitutions. Substitutes are crucial because of the gruelling

:11:28. > :11:30.nature of the sport. Players are not allowed to touch the bottom of the

:11:31. > :11:34.pool at any point during a match. The best way to stay upright and

:11:35. > :11:38.ready is to keep the legs moving alternately backwards and forwards,

:11:39. > :11:43.in what is known as the egg beater motion. There are two important

:11:44. > :11:46.lines in water polo. The two metre line and five metre line. The two

:11:47. > :11:50.metre line is two metres from the goal and the attacking team are not

:11:51. > :11:53.allowed to pass this line unless they have possession of the ball or

:11:54. > :11:58.the ball is already in that area. If an attacking player is filed within

:11:59. > :12:02.five metres of the goal, the referee can award a penalty shot from the

:12:03. > :12:05.five metre line. If a file is committed further out than five

:12:06. > :12:09.metres, a free throw is awarded. Goalkeepers are allowed to use two

:12:10. > :12:13.hands at once during play, but outfield players can only use one

:12:14. > :12:17.hand at a time. The game is split into four quarters of eight minutes,

:12:18. > :12:21.but although the total playing time is only 32 minutes, a game usually

:12:22. > :12:24.lasts for over an hour because it is stopped and started regularly. Each

:12:25. > :12:28.quarter begins with the two teams lined up on their goal lines, and

:12:29. > :12:32.when the referee blows the whistle, the team sprint towards the ball in

:12:33. > :12:39.the of the pool. A shot clock controls the time for shooting in

:12:40. > :12:43.water polo, because when possession, teams only have 30 seconds to shoot

:12:44. > :12:46.at goal. And into the Maria Lenk Aquatics

:12:47. > :12:51.Centre we go. Spain are going to want to finish as high in the group

:12:52. > :12:56.is possible with a win. China just want a win. Let's get to the action.

:12:57. > :13:05.Water polo time. Watch out for the sprint.

:13:06. > :13:13.Underway. You are looking at the blue caps of Spain. It is the battle

:13:14. > :13:20.for opening possession and Spain will take control with the yellow

:13:21. > :13:24.trim on those blue caps. That is the signature of water polo, one side

:13:25. > :13:26.wearing white and blue always. A bit of different styling depending on

:13:27. > :13:36.your nation's colour. An exclusion to the Chinese defender

:13:37. > :13:42.for taking the arms away from the Spanish player, not going up to

:13:43. > :13:43.receive that pass. With the extra play upfront, you expect Spain to

:13:44. > :14:05.threaten the goal. Yang takes the benefit of the

:14:06. > :14:09.inaccurate shot. She wouldn't have been able to defend that. Spain with

:14:10. > :14:30.the benefit of a reset shot clock. Another exclusion for China. Getting

:14:31. > :14:49.a bit aggressive in pace. It is developing slowly. This time,

:14:50. > :14:57.they get it in. A score from the outside. The threat was imminent and

:14:58. > :15:00.Lopez Ventosa scores. The 28-year-old. Well slotted under the

:15:01. > :15:35.arm. The Spanish take the lead. That is her second goal of these

:15:36. > :15:47.Olympics, participating in her second games. London was the first.

:15:48. > :15:54.China will need to treat now, again. -- retreat. Both teams are smarting

:15:55. > :15:58.from the loss to the Americans and know how important it is to get

:15:59. > :16:07.going on the board. Keep the scoreboard ticking over. That, for

:16:08. > :16:13.Spain, leads to a turnover, coming out and directing traffic,

:16:14. > :16:21.immediately, Yang, getting the ball forward. China in the whitecaps. You

:16:22. > :16:36.see the injury sustained on the right eye of Zhang. No doubt she is

:16:37. > :16:39.smarting. And the biggest challenge will be visually, whether she is

:16:40. > :16:43.seeing everything is clear as she might. Does not seem to be much

:16:44. > :16:51.swelling, more of an impact brews from contact. To be expected during

:16:52. > :16:57.the course of these games. It is a brutal sport, it can be, water polo,

:16:58. > :17:03.without doubt. And the most challenging part is that a lot of

:17:04. > :17:11.it, you don't see. It is all going on in those areas, particularly, in

:17:12. > :17:23.front of goal. Into a position, the backhand, slicing delivery. Almost

:17:24. > :17:29.look like a last gasp effort. It is Garcia Godoy who takes it, just

:17:30. > :17:36.unleashes it. And you see the frustration of Yang, looking

:17:37. > :17:46.skyward. Another Spanish goal, they will take it, they are up by two.

:17:47. > :17:51.Great shooting percentage, five goals from the six shots taken thus

:17:52. > :18:02.far in this tournament. That was her first of the day.

:18:03. > :18:11.China with the benefit of an extra player. The exclusion coming to the

:18:12. > :18:20.Spanish number ten. She makes her way out of the pool. And by the time

:18:21. > :18:24.she gets out she has got to return and get back in because China have

:18:25. > :18:29.been blocked and prevented from any further control, now we are back to

:18:30. > :18:33.a full continent they respond both sides. Sometimes they go from the

:18:34. > :18:39.scene of the crime, swimmer all the way over to the sin bin area, and

:18:40. > :18:44.then sometimes have got to go through the middle of the possession

:18:45. > :18:53.of the opposing team. It really seems a long journey, just to go

:18:54. > :18:56.somewhere, tag up, and return. China would love the confidence of getting

:18:57. > :19:07.a first goal in this match with this possession. That is a safe though.

:19:08. > :19:14.Taking quite well. -- save. The Spanish keeper, Esther Ramos, great

:19:15. > :19:21.experience, her second Olympic Games, she already has a silver

:19:22. > :19:30.medal in her pocket from the games in London 2012. Time-out called. And

:19:31. > :19:35.the Chinese need to have a little think about how they want to

:19:36. > :19:41.approach things. It is the Spaniards who call this one. There you see the

:19:42. > :19:45.coach coming across, his body language at the moment is not quite

:19:46. > :19:49.as strong as we have seen at other times. Just a little bit frustrated

:19:50. > :20:06.about how his team has started. His story began as a Brazilian water

:20:07. > :20:10.polo player in the 1970s. Then spent a lot of time in America during

:20:11. > :20:15.Collegiate days. Getting into the coaching field. He has really been

:20:16. > :20:23.an ambassador for the sport, globally. You will see that, it is

:20:24. > :20:26.such a specialist sport, water polo, that the coaches who move around,

:20:27. > :20:31.they end up coaching a number of national programmes. They choose and

:20:32. > :20:37.elect to have the best, and he is one of them. China, poised with an

:20:38. > :20:45.opportunity. They have the extra player. That pass was a little too

:20:46. > :20:48.lofted. The and of the range. And you spend more time just trying to

:20:49. > :20:55.get the ball back into a good shooting position again... There it

:20:56. > :21:01.is! Off the crossbar. Not a bad attempt. And Esther Ramos will take

:21:02. > :21:07.that, just the slightest of pictures with the left hand before it hit off

:21:08. > :21:16.the bar. She is only too pleased, the clenched fist. And Spain with

:21:17. > :21:25.some pretty aggressive defence. Maybe that is why there is a black

:21:26. > :21:29.eye on the right eye of Zhang. Just kind of a flailing defence of

:21:30. > :21:39.approach, they hopeful shot from the distance. And the whistle-blowers,

:21:40. > :21:45.bringing it back. -- the whistle blows. Spain will take it one more

:21:46. > :21:53.time. Not sure just how that was returned to Spain but nevertheless

:21:54. > :21:57.they take control. It is difficult, when you watch all of these

:21:58. > :22:04.different battles. Six of them going on. Turnover file again. Spain are

:22:05. > :22:09.poised. They have had the lions share of the offence and it is more

:22:10. > :22:14.tiring, spending time swimming and marshalling the other team's attack.

:22:15. > :22:22.Having to worry about counteracting everything they are looking to

:22:23. > :22:25.execute in the pool. China, we saw it from the body language of their

:22:26. > :22:31.coach, they really need to get going to get some of the pressure off now.

:22:32. > :22:40.You can see their body language, looking to retreat. A Spanish

:22:41. > :22:45.exclusion. Each time the call comes in you see just what it is that the

:22:46. > :22:58.referees are isolating. And China will take that! A little bit of

:22:59. > :23:05.triumph for the number eight,, slotting past the keeper. She will

:23:06. > :23:17.take that, in this, her first Olympic Games. Of the water and into

:23:18. > :23:23.the far corner. Got a couple of books at it. It looks more cosmetic,

:23:24. > :23:35.really. Just the surface of the injury. -- couple of looks at it.

:23:36. > :23:41.China, again, giving up the advantage to Spain. They have the

:23:42. > :23:48.striker numbers. What position will be short run from? That is the only

:23:49. > :23:54.question. China swimming back and unable to get the arms up. Rate

:23:55. > :24:01.defending teams get the arms of. There it is! And a rebound. Spain

:24:02. > :24:11.are really let that opportunity slip through their fingers. Almost like a

:24:12. > :24:19.volleyball spike. Trying to get it down and into the goal but once

:24:20. > :24:23.again the crossbar, unrelenting. That is where they have scored

:24:24. > :24:28.already, from the outside right wing position. And there is a one minute

:24:29. > :24:36.exactly remaining in this opening period play. There they go, China!

:24:37. > :24:44.Unleashing again. And it is that lady. Dare we say it, she just needs

:24:45. > :24:52.the one eyed to locate the far side of goal. Zhang, finding her mark,

:24:53. > :25:01.her second goal. She is providing all of their offence so far. And

:25:02. > :25:11.that pleases them. So maybe the approach from the coach Azevedo,

:25:12. > :25:15.just a bit annoyed with how his team started, maybe it was just the

:25:16. > :25:20.kick-start they needed. This is better from China. They are right

:25:21. > :25:23.against the Spanish players, not giving them the room they were

:25:24. > :25:31.afforded in the opening minutes of this period. Spain no further away

:25:32. > :25:37.from goal. Looking a bit uncertain as to what their game plan is. That

:25:38. > :25:43.really is aggressive from China. A scrapping approach. Just to force

:25:44. > :25:47.the issue. It will lead to an exclusion. And you can see the

:25:48. > :25:54.Chinese players making their way all the way across in front. She got

:25:55. > :25:59.the, but the whistle had blown and play did not continue. There he is.

:26:00. > :26:07.The gold medallist of 1996 in Atlanta. Still a young coach, only

:26:08. > :26:13.46 years old. You can see him on bended knee. He is giving firm

:26:14. > :26:21.instructions to his side. As you saw a moment ago from Azevedo and the

:26:22. > :26:38.Chinese side of the pool. This is an opportunity, with 32

:26:39. > :26:45.seconds remaining, to take the lead at quarter time. You will often see

:26:46. > :26:49.this. Trying to manage the last passages of play, maximising them,

:26:50. > :27:03.in order to go into the quarter breaks, or have time, in control on

:27:04. > :27:14.the scoreboard. Look at this! The Spaniard with the lightning left arm

:27:15. > :27:21.attack. In her first Olympic Games as well. Her third overall in the

:27:22. > :27:25.competition so far. Well taken, to the delight of her team-mates. It

:27:26. > :27:40.was measured and extremely well executed.

:27:41. > :27:52.You can see the shooting percentage of both teams, just operating at two

:27:53. > :27:55.thirds. A struggle going on, and that'll be the end of the first

:27:56. > :28:04.eight minutes of play in this matchup. This is much number nine in

:28:05. > :28:12.group B, and at the moment, it is China who trailed by one, 2-3.

:28:13. > :28:29.There it is. The opening sprint. The whole weight, sitting in its holder.

:28:30. > :28:33.-- the ball awaits. It looks like Spain had it but it was under the

:28:34. > :28:47.water. So the referee just wants to take control again. They allow a

:28:48. > :28:51.restart, effectively a jump ball, as you might see in basketball. It is

:28:52. > :29:01.the first we have seen it in the tournament so far, it is generally a

:29:02. > :29:06.clear win at the centre line. We saw the second goal from Spain from that

:29:07. > :29:12.facing backwards to the goal position, whipping it around. That

:29:13. > :29:15.is also a short technique generally use from that area, when you are

:29:16. > :29:20.disgusting smothered, and you just do not have an option. You can see

:29:21. > :29:25.in the men's water polo, they will shoot from just at the side of the

:29:26. > :29:30.defender. Maybe not entirely the intention. That will lead to an

:29:31. > :29:35.exclusion for the Chinese player. Right in the middle of it. This is

:29:36. > :29:45.going to be a penalty shot for Spain now. It has been taken cleanly. And

:29:46. > :29:55.it is on the board. Number ten, the 23-year-old with the right arm

:29:56. > :29:59.delivery. And this is the struggle and frustration of the Chinese

:30:00. > :30:06.defender. She guessed right, coming across. But again, it just hit the

:30:07. > :30:13.surface of the water for that left arm and skipped up into the goal.

:30:14. > :30:29.Spain lead 4-2. Her first of the day. Well taken from the penalty

:30:30. > :30:41.China need a response and momentum would certainly take a bit of

:30:42. > :30:53.generating. That wasn't the most forceful of shots.

:30:54. > :31:09.She will have a seat and watch proceedings for the moment, Mei. She

:31:10. > :31:25.is early doors. Looking from the outside in on the sidelines.

:31:26. > :31:35.Laura Lopez Ventosa scorers, perfectly placed into the corner.

:31:36. > :31:43.That is Lopez Ventosa's second goal of this matchup. This is her second

:31:44. > :31:53.Games. She is already a silver medallist.

:31:54. > :32:00.Consistent strike. I think that may have crossed the line. There will

:32:01. > :32:05.need to be a closer look at this. They will count it, it is on the

:32:06. > :32:12.board, there is no debate. It has two fully crossed the line. It goes

:32:13. > :32:16.off of the goal frame, the crossbar, and goes down. It is the angle side

:32:17. > :32:24.on that is really going to be most telling. From here, it is tough.

:32:25. > :32:27.Otherwise, it was pretty clear. The referee didn't hesitate and there

:32:28. > :32:43.wasn't a whole lot of debate about it. A third goal for China.

:32:44. > :33:02.The chance again to keep this tight. Zhang gets the credit again. An

:33:03. > :33:09.action goal, the third one, number eight for China. She came forward

:33:10. > :33:13.and picked up all three of the goals so far. You talk about coming

:33:14. > :33:17.forward offensively and keeping your team in it. Spain will lose a

:33:18. > :33:27.player. China are now encouraged by the last

:33:28. > :33:38.goal. They will take their chances when they come.

:33:39. > :33:48.One more time, the save was good. Rising up at just the right time.

:33:49. > :33:58.Ester Ramos makes that and you saw her chatting with herself there.

:33:59. > :34:06.Zhang has three goals she is being credit for -- being given credit

:34:07. > :34:14.for, but I think that will be adjusted.

:34:15. > :34:20.A mad dash, almost looks panicked. The urgency to get back into

:34:21. > :34:32.position and also for China to see if they can't get an advantage.

:34:33. > :34:43.The shooting has been great from the outside, and one more time, this

:34:44. > :34:49.time a new scorer. This time it is Ma. You saw her turn and fist pump.

:34:50. > :34:53.This is her third Olympic Games and she leads this site by some margin

:34:54. > :35:04.over all in her Olympic scoring. This is her 39th goal, and her

:35:05. > :35:07.fourth at these games. She would probably like a better return on her

:35:08. > :35:15.scoring efficiency from there. She has shown herself extremely capable

:35:16. > :35:21.with the 38 goals prior to that one. She will need to really kind of get

:35:22. > :35:28.going for her side. They are back within one, though, that is the most

:35:29. > :35:35.important bit. At times, it looked as though Spain would start to run

:35:36. > :35:43.away with it. What a play that is. Skilfully delivered into goal. It is

:35:44. > :35:51.patient, measured, and Lopez Ventosa scores her fourth goal for Spain.

:35:52. > :36:00.She can collect it, control it, out weight the keeper and locked it in.

:36:01. > :36:24.-- outwait. One more time. She gets another one.

:36:25. > :36:28.That is most definitely her hat-trick, her third on the day. I

:36:29. > :36:34.felt as though one of those would get reassigned elsewhere.

:36:35. > :36:40.Nevertheless, it is in the back of the Spanish goal. You see the look

:36:41. > :36:44.from the keeper, Ester Ramos. They don't have an answer for number

:36:45. > :36:50.three of China. She has been dominant. You see there is nothing

:36:51. > :36:52.about that injury that she suffered that is preventing her from being

:36:53. > :37:12.effective in this matchup. China, as a result of that last

:37:13. > :37:18.goal, have possession and can level at six. It really is impressive to

:37:19. > :37:24.see how Zhang has just been able to keep her team in it. Other than her,

:37:25. > :37:29.they have looked a little bit unaware. There has been great

:37:30. > :37:35.balance of scoring. Four different goal-scorers from Spain. Three of

:37:36. > :37:38.them belonging to Lopez Ventosa, but otherwise, the majority of the

:37:39. > :37:46.offence from China has been coming from the number eight, Zhang Cong.

:37:47. > :37:47.This will be a golden opportunity here in penalty throw for the

:37:48. > :38:05.Chinese. Oh, the save is made. The left-hand

:38:06. > :38:19.gets to it. She looks quite calm about it. Not overly flummoxed. And

:38:20. > :38:23.that lady there, Zhao, I think she deserves one of those goals from

:38:24. > :38:30.Zhang, it was Ms assigned. Nevertheless, she had the chance

:38:31. > :38:34.there and couldn't make it count. There it is, another save and a

:38:35. > :38:39.beauty, a world-class delivery there from the Spanish keeper. She really

:38:40. > :38:51.looked to be in charge. Nothing really fazes her. Another outward

:38:52. > :38:53.shot from Zhao, but she could not get into the back of the Spanish

:38:54. > :39:15.goal this time. It has got to be such hard work.

:39:16. > :39:25.Look at this from the Chinese! They have a different scoring threat and

:39:26. > :39:30.it is Niu who will take that, the number five. Step up and take your

:39:31. > :39:37.turn and it was made to look quite easy from well outside of nine

:39:38. > :39:45.metres. There, the Chinese bench, everyone gets up to celebrate that

:39:46. > :39:54.moment. Even Azevedo, the veteran coach. Niu, well worked. Executed to

:39:55. > :40:02.perfection and this is now level at six. Ortiz Reyes with a couple of

:40:03. > :40:05.major fowls already. She will have to wait her turn to return to the

:40:06. > :40:10.match. That is a coaching decision, nothing as far as the protocol. Just

:40:11. > :40:21.trained not to get her removed and she has already collected a couple

:40:22. > :40:23.of major fowls. That was Garcia Godoy, her second of the game and

:40:24. > :40:33.sixth of these Olympic Games. Again, that is quite a comfortable

:40:34. > :40:39.score. Almost looks as though she just tosses it in from that slow

:40:40. > :40:45.motion replay. Six goals over all in this tournament and 13 now in her

:40:46. > :41:02.second Olympic Games. That is 13 goals over those two

:41:03. > :41:07.games. A part of the silver medal for Spain in London. They were also

:41:08. > :41:13.world champions in 2013, when the games were held in Barcelona, but in

:41:14. > :41:19.Kazan, not quite the same in 2015 when the World Championships were

:41:20. > :41:24.held. They were seven. This now is a chance to peek at the right time for

:41:25. > :41:30.Spain. They are in a grudge match as they both score comfortably when

:41:31. > :41:37.given the opportunity in this opening half of play. This could

:41:38. > :41:46.easily be a scoreline at the end of full-time. Right now, it will be

:41:47. > :41:50.China in the last minute of the first half with a chance once again

:41:51. > :41:57.just to get level. They have never been in front in this match so far.

:41:58. > :42:04.It will be a time-out called. Exclusion to the Spanish players as

:42:05. > :42:07.well. A perfect moment for China to try to take advantage. They will

:42:08. > :42:50.reassess their options with this time-out.

:42:51. > :42:59.Spain with a couple of players just watching in the sin bin. They will

:43:00. > :43:17.be one removed from the action in this possession.

:43:18. > :43:27.Quickly, a time-out being taken by Spain now. They will want to

:43:28. > :43:31.maximise this opportunity. Oca Gaia is their coach. He is down and

:43:32. > :43:38.showing a bit more passion, I would say, so far, in the way he is

:43:39. > :43:43.communicating with his team. Azevedo enough last time out seemed more

:43:44. > :43:45.worried about the water splashing on his pants than he was about getting

:43:46. > :44:08.the message across to his team. Spain are happy. 25 seconds now

:44:09. > :44:14.remain in this first half. It doesn't mean that they will need to

:44:15. > :44:19.use all of it, though. They could score quite quickly and that is

:44:20. > :44:22.always the debate of tactics. Do you wait to the end? You might not have

:44:23. > :44:27.the same option that presented itself quicker.

:44:28. > :44:37.throw can they get into an area where they are in courage to shoot?

:44:38. > :44:48.They are struggling just to get control at this range. China get an

:44:49. > :44:57.arm on that. Two seconds. It will be a change of position. And time in

:44:58. > :45:01.fact runs out for the first half. Difficult to say where this game

:45:02. > :45:05.will end up but at the moment it is Spain, who led first with the

:45:06. > :45:13.opening goal, and now have the lead at half-time. The ladies will take a

:45:14. > :45:14.break, Spain leading China 7-6 in group the action in the preliminary

:45:15. > :45:39.round. -- group B. All of the same. They battle for the

:45:40. > :45:52.opening, that was actually a toss in by the referee to restart things.

:45:53. > :45:58.For both, the final match in the group. It will determine their

:45:59. > :46:08.position in the quarterfinal round. Those are the knockout stages. China

:46:09. > :46:12.will take control. It is measured, again, and thoughtful. We have not

:46:13. > :46:18.seen much careless play from either side. This lady is the one who has

:46:19. > :46:30.really been counted on. Providing the offence. She has the ball again.

:46:31. > :46:35.Zhang. The feed inside. Immediately, a couple of Spanish defenders right

:46:36. > :46:48.on top of it. It proves to be elusive for the Chinese. Coming

:46:49. > :46:53.across towards it. Not going to be able to get it. Spain are

:46:54. > :47:00.threatening, and Spain score, again. They will take it into an area where

:47:01. > :47:08.they can constantly score through Garcia Godoy. A couple of players

:47:09. > :47:15.for Spain with hat tricks. They take that and they make short work of it.

:47:16. > :47:21.In front, up and over. No time wasted, really ambitious for the

:47:22. > :47:27.Chinese keeper Yang to come out and think she could have a crack at

:47:28. > :47:40.that. She is operating at 20% save percentage. The save percentage for

:47:41. > :47:48.her opposite number, the Spanish keeper, 40%, so far, for Esther

:47:49. > :47:55.Ramos. So that'll be a deciding part, equally. They have got to do

:47:56. > :48:00.their job, as best as possible, either for the rebound, and also

:48:01. > :48:05.collect the loose balls. Make of those good decisions. Make it more

:48:06. > :48:12.difficult for the attacking team. It is not always about making a save,

:48:13. > :48:16.just sometimes being in the position that forces the shooter to be over

:48:17. > :48:22.perfect, and they end up missing by overcooking it. Spain looked as

:48:23. > :48:27.though they would shoot from there. Feeding it in once again, as we have

:48:28. > :48:31.seen, you do not need to turn and face goal, equally with a back to

:48:32. > :48:38.goal they have been able to be effective, both sides have done that

:48:39. > :48:45.so far. China now working to get back within one. There is contact.

:48:46. > :48:49.And it looks like there's a problem. The Spanish player, whether it was

:48:50. > :48:55.incidental, head on head... She is just going down to try to crew

:48:56. > :49:01.herself of a little bit. It looks like a bomb on the head, is it?

:49:02. > :49:10.There it is. Right there. That will get your attention. From the

:49:11. > :49:14.outside, Spain now without her services, having to find a different

:49:15. > :49:21.option. They have got a few. They have pretty good balanced scoring as

:49:22. > :49:29.we have seen so far. Four different scorers. And now they have the

:49:30. > :49:37.player advantage. It will be China to take it back. This is a quiet

:49:38. > :49:42.spell in the game, either side can really take things forward. They

:49:43. > :49:51.give it up so quick, China. The referee has spotted something off

:49:52. > :50:02.the ball, he was not happy with it, it leads to a change of possession.

:50:03. > :50:09.Substitutions happen all the time. Wang, coming out. China committing

:50:10. > :50:16.ten of the turnover fouls. Need to be careful, that is just getting

:50:17. > :50:23.close toward the net. And almost desperate shot, get it away while

:50:24. > :50:28.you are dealing with the defending player. Not entirely sure where it

:50:29. > :50:39.is going, but you have a pretty good idea. It did not have enough power

:50:40. > :50:43.behind it to cross the line though. Spain will lose a player now. China

:50:44. > :50:51.with as good a chance as they have had in the second half so far to try

:50:52. > :50:56.to strike. A little delayed in taking it. Sometimes they have not

:50:57. > :51:04.quite got it in the position... But they do now. They score again. This

:51:05. > :51:12.time it is the number two. Her second of the game. Overall, the

:51:13. > :51:24.fifth of the tournament. She really is a talisman for this site. The

:51:25. > :51:28.most goals to her credit of any Chinese lawyers at Olympic Games.

:51:29. > :51:34.And she is just keeping tabs on the leading score at the moment of this

:51:35. > :51:44.tournament, the number eight, Zhang. And that would be a second of the

:51:45. > :51:51.game for Ma, and again, it is within range. They need to stand firm. Arms

:51:52. > :51:56.up. Taking away the shooting pains. It is difficult to keep yourself

:51:57. > :52:06.aloft and keep your arms in the air at the same time. That comes off the

:52:07. > :52:15.post. The crossbar. Just a touch on it. From credit to the Chinese

:52:16. > :52:22.keeper, Yang, she gets an arm on it to touch it onto the crossbar and it

:52:23. > :52:27.stays out. They will have to swim and work to get it back under their

:52:28. > :52:40.control. Seven seconds on the shot clock. The referee is unhappy. He

:52:41. > :52:50.blows the whistle. Oca Gaia, keeping a watchful eye. He knows they have

:52:51. > :52:57.been a little wasteful. What a save! A massive moment, a tremendous save

:52:58. > :53:01.from Yang and then Chinese recovery of the ball. This is encouraging for

:53:02. > :53:06.them as they tried to go forward and level it. The left arm delivery is

:53:07. > :53:22.often a little more deceptive. But the save is dynamic. It was Forca

:53:23. > :53:28.Ariza with the short, she has four so far today, just one goal, she

:53:29. > :53:52.would have a lot to cash that in. -- would have loved to.

:53:53. > :54:06.China to retain control. The intensity, you have got to love it.

:54:07. > :54:13.Zhang, with this ball. 191 international matches. This is just

:54:14. > :54:25.her first Olympic Games. So a journey to get to this stage. The

:54:26. > :54:31.short goes off the frame. You could see the hitching. About five

:54:32. > :54:34.different looks in preparation for that final delivery toward goal.

:54:35. > :54:44.Probably a couple of inches it needed to be, just underneath. Those

:54:45. > :54:49.of square posts do not give favour, generally, to the offence of side of

:54:50. > :54:53.the ball. It generally bounces straight back, down, or out. That is

:54:54. > :54:59.a lobbed effort. It looked like a pass but the intention was to go

:55:00. > :55:04.over the keeper, hoping she maybe had committed. And about timing

:55:05. > :55:12.also. Sometimes they rise up and you are going to have to fall. Look at

:55:13. > :55:19.that easy take. The Chinese are not allowed... We are waiting to see.

:55:20. > :55:28.The whistle had already blown. They will not count that one. Spain, with

:55:29. > :55:37.the next attempt in a good position. They will work further away from

:55:38. > :55:45.goal. Spain, just trying to get themselves in an offence of rhythm.

:55:46. > :55:52.In this third period. The scoring has started to dry up a little bit.

:55:53. > :56:06.Quite an easy effort, not a whole lot of pace on it either. That was

:56:07. > :56:17.going to be wide of goal. The most important part, a two metre throw

:56:18. > :56:24.in. Spain keep the possession going. It is getting closer. They can

:56:25. > :56:29.threaten. This time the shot... A battle for control, they win it

:56:30. > :56:36.back. And it is thrown into an area where they can start to throw away.

:56:37. > :56:42.An open area. Right off the post. And as I say, the posts, generally,

:56:43. > :56:46.uncompromising. That was a little careless from the Chinese team to

:56:47. > :57:01.give that up. Quite an ambitious pass. Spain read it like a book. We

:57:02. > :57:06.see the steel. That was one of them. It seemed as though they had full

:57:07. > :57:12.control. Then Spain just really grasped it right from them. That

:57:13. > :57:20.will generally lead to a penalty throw. At the moment we are just

:57:21. > :57:31.waiting to see what will be called. And it is a major file against Song,

:57:32. > :57:39.meaning an opportunity against the Chinese keeper for Spain to increase

:57:40. > :57:45.the margin. They take it with ease. Tarrago Aymerich, with her second

:57:46. > :57:51.goal, from the penalty shot position. It was because it was from

:57:52. > :57:53.behind. Leading to the major file. And from the penalty area she has

:57:54. > :58:08.been on the mark. She does it again. That is how the third quarter ended.

:58:09. > :58:15.We can now go live. Six minutes 53 seconds to go. Can China bagged a

:58:16. > :58:21.win in this tournament? Or will it be Spain?

:58:22. > :58:28.Things have slowed down extensively in the second half. Spain are again

:58:29. > :58:34.poised to take the sting out of the game. China will need to push

:58:35. > :58:40.things. They have been waiting for things to happen which they can ill

:58:41. > :58:49.afford any longer. That is an exclusion, the Chinese player, and

:58:50. > :58:54.Spain just trying some games on. -- gamesmanship. Trying to force a

:58:55. > :58:58.mistake from the opposition. Try to take advantage. They have done well

:58:59. > :59:11.with the player advantage. Another one! They score into the bottom left

:59:12. > :59:18.side. An easy effort in the end. Ortiz?Munoz, her first off this

:59:19. > :59:29.match. The opportunity was very fruitful indeed.

:59:30. > :59:41.Three from five from that range. Her fourth goal of the tournament so

:59:42. > :59:47.far. They converted and 60% of those chances when they had the extra

:59:48. > :59:56.player. That 3-goal margin is as big a lead as they have had in this

:59:57. > :00:05.match. The hand is up. And they read it pretty comfortably. Their

:00:06. > :00:09.goalkeeper, Ester Ramos, her second Olympics, already a silver

:00:10. > :00:17.medallist, 152 international matches, she takes it with ease.

:00:18. > :00:24.Can they in fact continue their scoring right now?

:00:25. > :00:33.They really built that up to get the extra player. The shot went wide,

:00:34. > :00:43.but they controlled the opening 2.5 minutes of this fourth period.

:00:44. > :00:48.Pushing China back and forcing mistakes.

:00:49. > :00:53.This is maybe not the prettiest way to play, but it is effective for

:00:54. > :01:20.Spain. Well engaged is Miguel Oca Gaia. He

:01:21. > :01:34.has great pedigree in the sport as a player and equally as a coach. That

:01:35. > :01:40.save was made quite comfortably by Ester Ramos.

:01:41. > :01:48.China really now a long way from being threatening. They have to swim

:01:49. > :01:50.into an area that will be more dangerous than they have enjoyed for

:01:51. > :02:03.the majority of the second half. That shot was meek from that range.

:02:04. > :02:13.It didn't have much on it, and certainly the accuracy... If it hits

:02:14. > :02:23.the crossbar, it will more than likely come out.

:02:24. > :02:41.The whistle really peppering in. Spain poised to score and 11.

:02:42. > :02:56.Shot could have come in notably at any point, but there it was. Just

:02:57. > :02:58.under the arm again. This time, the sharpshooting of Lopez Ventosa. She

:02:59. > :03:03.was out with what looked to be an injury in the first round of play

:03:04. > :03:09.and she got wrapped up with the Chinese player. She is back, good to

:03:10. > :03:18.see. She gets another goal. This is her fourth of the game.

:03:19. > :03:27.Just a little too much force. Any Olympic goal is a sweet one, and she

:03:28. > :03:43.will take it. She is back out again, just needing

:03:44. > :03:49.some attention there on the sidelines. Not sure if she wears

:03:50. > :03:53.contact lenses or not, but just making sure that she is settled, but

:03:54. > :04:01.she did well to come back in this game and score again. Often, you

:04:02. > :04:13.will see those substitutions right after a player scores. They will in

:04:14. > :04:22.fact, out. China had the best position they have had. The strike

:04:23. > :04:29.came in from Zhang. Her first of the game. The left hand of the number

:04:30. > :04:37.12, eight Dorrit to the top of goal. No wasting time. That was her first.

:04:38. > :04:54.Limited time, she has only played 3.20 three. -- three .23.

:04:55. > :05:00.They thought about it from distance, Spain. That's probably beyond their

:05:01. > :05:25.comfort range. They looked like they were going to

:05:26. > :05:31.go for the rebound, but they realised it would probably be extra

:05:32. > :05:35.effort that would not be fruitful. There is their threat offensively,

:05:36. > :05:40.Zhang, who has four goal to her credit in this match. She has been

:05:41. > :05:44.the force. They have made that correction. She just has the three.

:05:45. > :05:55.That has been levelled out, but she has a hat-trick nevertheless. I

:05:56. > :05:59.thought it was going to go to Zhao, and it has. It is all about the team

:06:00. > :06:03.scoring right now, and Spain with two minutes to go are enjoying the

:06:04. > :06:12.3-goal lead and really look in firm control. It will take a serious

:06:13. > :06:14.change of events by China. They haven't really shown to be a threat

:06:15. > :06:29.from the current range. That shot didn't make a difference

:06:30. > :06:37.in the scoreline. They need to push down. There has been an exclusion,

:06:38. > :06:44.Bach Pascual is now off. And even dozen for Spain. That's left-handed

:06:45. > :06:56.delivery that we have seen a number of times. Forca Ariza, with her

:06:57. > :07:00.second goal of the match. This is her first Olympic Games and her

:07:01. > :07:04.fourth goal over all in this tournament so far. That is her

:07:05. > :07:11.second is today. She had a penalty shot saved on her earlier in the

:07:12. > :07:12.match. She will be glad to get back and feeling it with that strike

:07:13. > :07:39.there. Whistle blows in favour of China.

:07:40. > :07:44.The exclusion for the European player. Off they go. Precious

:07:45. > :07:45.moments now with the player advantage, China needs something. It

:07:46. > :07:56.is about confidence. They will be into the quarterfinal

:07:57. > :08:06.stage. Can they execute live in play? Now inside the last minute.

:08:07. > :08:15.That shot clock now working against them.

:08:16. > :08:30.Spain really have been the stronger of the two sides. They have had more

:08:31. > :08:37.attacking presence, more balance in their scoring. They have been able

:08:38. > :08:46.to just control those soft areas of the game.

:08:47. > :08:54.Spain happy just to keep the ball in control, electing not to shoot one

:08:55. > :08:58.last time. And there it is, full-time. Quite a tidy day's work

:08:59. > :09:02.for Spain, the reigning silver medallists from London have, and

:09:03. > :09:05.finished their preliminary round. This time against the People's

:09:06. > :09:12.Republic of China, they get themselves a victory. It is a 12-8

:09:13. > :09:16.victory at full-time. Both coaches have great respect for one another,

:09:17. > :09:20.acknowledging each other with a hug. That is the second victory for Spain

:09:21. > :09:25.in this preliminary round. They will take the victory and put it in their

:09:26. > :09:31.pocket. Now the seedings for the group we will see in a moment.

:09:32. > :09:44.The Chinese were pretty good. Spain were in great position most of the

:09:45. > :09:48.day. They were tidier on the penalty shots, as well. They converted two

:09:49. > :09:52.from cue. Great spirit amongst the Spanish ladies. They are happy with

:09:53. > :09:58.the work that has been done. Still lots more to come in this water polo

:09:59. > :10:04.tournament. ORE ODUBA: Well played to Spain.

:10:05. > :10:10.They make it three wins out of three. A 100% record in the women's

:10:11. > :10:14.water polo so far. Their quest to go one better than the London 2012

:10:15. > :10:23.silver Bay won four years ago continues. For China, there are

:10:24. > :10:25.still work to be done. Did you see how aggressive the sport was

:10:26. > :10:31.postmarked the Chinese player with the huge black eye. It is physical,

:10:32. > :10:34.aggressive and sometimes dirty. Congratulations to Spain who

:10:35. > :10:38.progress with a 100% record into the knockout stages. We will stay with

:10:39. > :10:42.the watery theme, into a sport that is less violent and talk about

:10:43. > :10:47.growing. Yesterday it was quite sensational. We have tears at the

:10:48. > :10:53.stadium as Heather Stanning and Helen Glover made it two Olympic

:10:54. > :10:58.gold medals out of two. Also there was huge success for the men's four,

:10:59. > :11:02.as well. Let's get down to the Lagoa Stadium and two guys who had their

:11:03. > :11:08.eyes all over it. Sir Steve Redgrave and John Inverdale. I'm surprised

:11:09. > :11:12.you won't feel emotional. Or maybe you were. It was sensational. It was

:11:13. > :11:16.the kind of day you wanted to be out on the water because it was pouring

:11:17. > :11:21.with rain. Watching the action yesterday was just miserable until

:11:22. > :11:25.the sun came out in time for the men's four. Today, you want to be

:11:26. > :11:29.out. It is nice being in the stands, but what a great day to mess about

:11:30. > :11:34.on the river. Isn't this the kind of day as a competitor when you think,

:11:35. > :11:38.this is what I do it for? This is a special day. The men's and women's

:11:39. > :11:44.eights which are coming up in the finals later. It is a serious day,

:11:45. > :11:49.the biggest day of their career. There is a lot at stake. They are in

:11:50. > :11:53.pretty good form. We have various groups of broadcasters here,

:11:54. > :11:58.including ours German neighbours and the Kiwis. They're all talking about

:11:59. > :12:08.gold medals for their boats today, but we are confident with a small C.

:12:09. > :12:12.The Germans asked as a couple of minutes ago and we were cagey, but a

:12:13. > :12:17.little grin. The three lots we have been talking about, that John has

:12:18. > :12:22.talked about, any of those three. The Kiwis, the Germans or ourselves

:12:23. > :12:26.could lead the rowing medal table. We have done it for the last two

:12:27. > :12:31.Olympics and it could come down to the men's eights. It is likely to be

:12:32. > :12:36.between us and Germany. The Kiwis are in all four remaining finals and

:12:37. > :12:40.have great chances in both singles, men and women. This is the schedule.

:12:41. > :12:46.The two single sculls finals to come first of all.

:12:47. > :12:55.They could win both of the first two. New Zealanders might end up

:12:56. > :13:01.with no gold medals, but could get two. We are very optimistic about

:13:02. > :13:07.the women's eight final of a medal, despite the trials and tribulations.

:13:08. > :13:11.Don't think anyone can beat the Americans, they are outstanding in

:13:12. > :13:17.the women's eight. But we could win the silver. The men's eight final is

:13:18. > :13:25.essentially a two horse race between Germany and Great Britain. The thing

:13:26. > :13:31.about the men's eight is it is such a spectacular sight. A great event

:13:32. > :13:35.to finish with. The Dutch came into the regatta, didn't perform well in

:13:36. > :13:39.the heat and didn't improve much in their semifinal. You cannot rule

:13:40. > :13:44.them out. It will be between the Brits and the Germans. There are two

:13:45. > :13:48.people in that men's eight, Hodge and Read, going for their third gold

:13:49. > :13:51.medal. That would put them just behind you and Matthew in the list

:13:52. > :13:58.of all-time meddling greats for Great Britain. That is a great

:13:59. > :14:02.incentive. That want to be at the top of their mind, going for a gold

:14:03. > :14:06.medal that they don't have. It doesn't matter what they have or

:14:07. > :14:09.haven't won in the past, but once it is all over and they have that gold

:14:10. > :14:14.medal round their necks, they will be very satisfied. I think both of

:14:15. > :14:17.them will retire after this, but you can never say never. As Katherine

:14:18. > :14:22.Grainger proved to such great effect. All those medallists

:14:23. > :14:26.yesterday, the obvious question to ask was, Tokyo? They said they

:14:27. > :14:29.weren't sure. We will see how we feel in a few months. For more

:14:30. > :14:36.finals to show you and you can see them all on BBC One in the course of

:14:37. > :14:42.the next 20 minutes. Beautifully set up. Thank you, John and Steve.

:14:43. > :14:47.Listening off the water, the sun. It has warmed up here and it is really

:14:48. > :14:52.rather hot. They have one already three medals at the rowing lake. Not

:14:53. > :14:55.bad considering the minor they won at London 2012. Another very

:14:56. > :15:02.successful arena back four years ago was the other velodrome. Already

:15:03. > :15:06.after a couple of days, this venue has brought huge success for Great

:15:07. > :15:15.Britain. We have seen medals, world records. It is simply stunning.

:15:16. > :15:23.I believe in the group. You find yourself surrounded by the best,

:15:24. > :15:31.most underrated athlete in the world. Without those guys I would

:15:32. > :15:36.not be able to win Olympic gold. You just think, how can we lose? Man for

:15:37. > :15:53.man, nobody else around the world can read my team.

:15:54. > :16:03.There is nothing else for it but a sharp, strong start. New Zealand,

:16:04. > :16:12.fighting hard. Britain, on course for the final. We can see them

:16:13. > :16:20.working hard. So far so good. Bradley Wiggins has done another

:16:21. > :16:24.mammoth turn. World record pace, we are about to find out as they

:16:25. > :16:30.crossed the line... And they have broken the world record! Sensational

:16:31. > :16:39.cycling, brilliant, brilliant stuff. The Olympic final, men's team

:16:40. > :16:55.pursuit. The race for gold, and Australia

:16:56. > :17:03.versus Great Britain. Australia, world champions. A good start for

:17:04. > :17:06.Edmondson on behalf of Australia. They are really trying to put

:17:07. > :17:11.Britain and the pressure now. Great Britain have work to do. At the

:17:12. > :17:16.halfway mark it is nearly seven tenths of a second. At the moment

:17:17. > :17:23.Australia are in the box seat. Great Britain are coming back. Australia

:17:24. > :17:28.are down to three already. Bradley Wiggins hands over to Ed Clancy.

:17:29. > :17:34.Down to three, they are in the lead, but only just. It goes right down to

:17:35. > :17:39.the wire, the last lap... Will it be Great Britain or Australia? It is

:17:40. > :17:48.great Britain, in a world record time!

:17:49. > :17:56.The last 12 months we have pretty much done everything together. It

:17:57. > :18:04.was incredible. All for this. We have done it. Absolutely amazing.

:18:05. > :18:06.When you are with guys like that it makes your job a hell of a lot

:18:07. > :18:27.easier. You may have noticed an emotional

:18:28. > :18:31.Jill Douglas in that piece. She has wiped away the tears. But it could

:18:32. > :18:43.be another emotional day, couldn't it?

:18:44. > :18:51.JILL: We will find out. Becky James is appearing at her first Olympic

:18:52. > :18:58.Games in the women's kierin, let's see how she gets on.

:18:59. > :19:10.Steph Morton, Anna Mears, fourth place in the team sprint. Rebecca

:19:11. > :19:19.James, and at the end of the field, the Canadian, O'Brien. First Olympic

:19:20. > :19:25.Games for Rebecca James. A troubled few years. So many injuries and

:19:26. > :19:31.illnesses. But Great Britain have answered all the questions about

:19:32. > :19:37.peaking for the Olympics. She will hope she has hit good form. She is

:19:38. > :19:43.not in any other events, it is all or nothing for her in this. The

:19:44. > :19:53.speed increases with four laps to go.

:19:54. > :20:02.James moves up. Sullivan goes with her. Nicely positioned, James,

:20:03. > :20:11.Natasha Hanson responds. The racing is on. Sullivan on the outside. O

:20:12. > :20:21.Brien of Canada. Rebecca James, to the front. She sees the front is a

:20:22. > :20:25.safe place to be. The other race is between New Zealand and Australia

:20:26. > :20:32.for second place, to go through. It will be a drag race to the finish.

:20:33. > :20:38.Hansen now, and the hip of games. The first two go through. Can Morton

:20:39. > :20:45.come through? James has been on the front for a long time. It is ever so

:20:46. > :20:53.close. Hansen, and a strong finish from the Korean rider. Rebecca James

:20:54. > :20:57.with a very strong ride but it looks like the Korean may have slipped in

:20:58. > :21:06.for second. The final push to the line was so close. Confirmation...

:21:07. > :21:12.We await confirmation, in fact. It has not come up yet. This is the

:21:13. > :21:18.start. Quite relaxed compared to other heats. Rebecca James was very

:21:19. > :21:25.controlled, got into the front, a long way to go, but she held on to

:21:26. > :21:30.do just enough to go through. The New Zealander and the Korean, we

:21:31. > :21:36.want to see who was second. The Korean comes home so fast, but we

:21:37. > :21:41.will need to wait for confirmation. Rebecca James was at the front a

:21:42. > :21:45.long time and paid off but Natasha Hansen, a really strong finish,

:21:46. > :21:53.going the long way around... It looks like it could be the New

:21:54. > :21:57.Zealander, Hansen, who goes through. Rebecca James, relief, she goes

:21:58. > :22:10.straight through. She will take a world of confidence from that.

:22:11. > :22:15.Joining her is Lee Hye-Jin, the Korean, so that charge around the

:22:16. > :22:19.outside really paid off. Very close on the line for her to go through.

:22:20. > :22:25.The New Zealander will now have to come back through the repecharge

:22:26. > :22:36.rounds. A reflection on that from Rebecca

:22:37. > :22:39.James? She took control of the race, and stayed out of trouble. She

:22:40. > :22:47.dictated the pace and had enough in reserve to hold off the Kiwi and the

:22:48. > :22:52.Korean. A perfect start, fantastic. You do not want to have to go

:22:53. > :22:57.through the repecharge, it is just more work for your legs. Yes, and

:22:58. > :23:02.anything can happen, you could have a crash. You just get out in front

:23:03. > :23:07.and dictate the tactics to everyone else and she did that. She will take

:23:08. > :23:11.real confidence from getting back out of her legs, she can now go back

:23:12. > :23:15.to the village, chill out, and she has two rides between her and an

:23:16. > :23:21.Olympic medal. How much will being in front of her own take out of her?

:23:22. > :23:25.It takes out a lot in the short-term but she will be fine by this

:23:26. > :23:29.evening. If you have two ride again straightaway it is physically the

:23:30. > :23:32.toughest way of doing it. Let's see the last of these Kieren opening

:23:33. > :23:53.heats. Immediately the French rider, Sandie

:23:54. > :23:59.Clair... She moved fast off the line, wants to be behind the pacing

:24:00. > :24:09.motorbike. Two to qualify, and the remaining riders into the repecharge

:24:10. > :24:20.round. Fascinating battle of mental strength and physical ability.

:24:21. > :24:44.Clair, Ismayilova, and the Irish rider McCurley, then Cuba was Mac

:24:45. > :24:50.Guerra, and the Dutch rider, European champion, right on the back

:24:51. > :24:53.of the field. She looks comfortable. She has an interesting story. At the

:24:54. > :25:02.age of seven she was riding cyclo-cross then aged 11 moved into

:25:03. > :25:06.BMX. She was identified racing BMX, they saw potential, she was not

:25:07. > :25:15.really happy with the development of p.m. -- BMX, the technical aspect,

:25:16. > :25:18.so she crossed over to the track is a track sprinter. She looks very

:25:19. > :25:31.comfortable just sitting on the back. They wind up and it is Clair,

:25:32. > :25:51.followed by Krupeckaite, then McCurley, then Cuba's Guerra, as

:25:52. > :25:58.they come around. Krupeckaite, giving herself a little space. Very

:25:59. > :26:05.cagey. And there comes Ligtlee from deep. She has a long way to go. She

:26:06. > :26:12.has been put on the hip by the experienced Krupeckaite. Clare,

:26:13. > :26:26.tried to hold down the bottom of the track. Krupeckaite, coming on the

:26:27. > :26:32.outside. Ismayilova, and Ligtlee on the inside, but it will be

:26:33. > :26:43.Krupeckaite and Ligtlee battling it out, Ligtlee takes it, Krupeckaite

:26:44. > :26:52.second, the rest go into the repecharge round. They were the two

:26:53. > :27:05.we thought would go through. Ligtlee Had to come from the back and made

:27:06. > :27:21.the first aggressive move. Staying out of trouble. Down the bottom of

:27:22. > :27:29.the track, the Cuban, Guerra, in fourth place, going through to the

:27:30. > :27:37.repecharge round. It is Ligtlee and Krupeckaite.

:27:38. > :27:45.I spoke to Rebecca James after that effort. I was having a few words

:27:46. > :27:48.with Chris Hoyt, a few tactical suggestions, but you must be

:27:49. > :27:56.delighted. I am over the moon. The hardest ride

:27:57. > :28:00.is the first. It will always hurt. I was not sure how I would go compared

:28:01. > :28:05.to everybody else, and I could feel them on the outside of me, I thought

:28:06. > :28:11.they would all pile over. But I had the legs and managed to hold them

:28:12. > :28:16.off until the finish line. Now you have the chance to go rest and come

:28:17. > :28:22.back fighting. Yes, I will put my feet up for a few hours then come

:28:23. > :28:26.back for the semifinals. Rebecca James just making her way to the

:28:27. > :28:32.village, a chance to lay up, head of the next round. Next stop, the men's

:28:33. > :28:40.sprint. A huge opportunity for Jason Kenny and Calum Skinner. Yes, the

:28:41. > :28:44.last 12, so they go up against the seeds, the gaps between them and

:28:45. > :28:50.their opponents get smaller and smaller. So far they have not been

:28:51. > :28:55.challenged, they are head and shoulders above the rest. Fingers

:28:56. > :29:02.crossed they can do it. What will be going through the mind of Kenny? A

:29:03. > :29:07.line for the front and a line for behind. He will dictate the race,

:29:08. > :29:10.how he wants it to pan out, if it does not go that way, he will

:29:11. > :29:16.hopefully have enough gas in the tank to address the balance. At the

:29:17. > :29:21.moment I cannot see him losing. Touch wood. He is so confident,

:29:22. > :29:26.relaxed, and fast. It is just so great to see both of them up there.

:29:27. > :29:32.Let's watch them in action, Jason Kenny, in the men's sprint.

:29:33. > :29:39.Jason Kenny breaking world records already in the flying 200 metres. He

:29:40. > :29:44.knows his form is on, he has speed in his legs. Already competed on the

:29:45. > :29:47.track here quite a few times, but he also has that experience and

:29:48. > :29:51.endurance of having to compete in a few events in the one championship.

:29:52. > :29:57.Down onto the bottom of the track. The winner of each quarterfinal goes

:29:58. > :30:03.through to the quarterfinals -- each of these heats go through to the

:30:04. > :30:12.quarterfinals and the losers go through to a last eights repechage

:30:13. > :30:17.round. Kenny starts grinding it up -- winding it up. Kenny is

:30:18. > :30:21.comfortable riding from the front or the back. He's trying to push the

:30:22. > :30:27.speed here. We have seen him in the past to wait to the home straight.

:30:28. > :30:35.He has the speed. He will take this one comfortably. He does so. When

:30:36. > :30:39.you look at it, it perhaps looks initially that he has too much work

:30:40. > :30:46.to do, but my word, this man is a real powerhouse. He is the world

:30:47. > :30:49.champion. It has so much to do with confidence and backing yourself and

:30:50. > :30:56.he knows he is on good form. He doesn't need to panic. Chris Hoy,

:30:57. > :31:02.you were applauding that effort from Jason Kenny. He looks super strong

:31:03. > :31:06.today. He had so much spare in the tank. He waited until half a lap to

:31:07. > :31:12.go, turned on the taps and cruised past him in the home straight. 10.3

:31:13. > :31:18.for the last 200 metres. Not hanging around. What message does this send

:31:19. > :31:21.to the rest of the field? You try to get through the rounds without

:31:22. > :31:27.wasting too much energy. Jason didn't waste any more than he had

:31:28. > :31:30.to. Gets a bit of a break before coming back. Once we get to the

:31:31. > :31:34.quarterfinals, it is the best of three will stop at this stage, it is

:31:35. > :31:38.one straight sprint and the rest go through to the rapid charge.

:31:39. > :31:44.Correct, two Bobby George winners to make up the eight. Jason will be one

:31:45. > :31:50.of those in the quarterfinal. It will be interesting to see. The

:31:51. > :31:56.fifth and six will be interesting to watch, because they will be the

:31:57. > :32:00.closest matches. It is shaping up well for the Brits. We have seen

:32:01. > :32:05.such progress from Callum Skinner in the last few months. He comes in

:32:06. > :32:10.here with huge morale and he has nothing to lose. Jason has all the

:32:11. > :32:14.expectation, the pressure. He could spring a surprise. We are a long way

:32:15. > :32:22.off the metal, but he takes it one race at a time and the clinical with

:32:23. > :32:25.how he approaches each race. COMMENTATOR: A little bit more

:32:26. > :32:30.confidence. The team of Great Britain have been absolutely on

:32:31. > :32:37.fire, lifting the morale of the whole team. This man has come into

:32:38. > :32:41.the championship in fine form. The enviable task of taking over Chris

:32:42. > :32:49.Hoy's position in the team sprint. No problem with that. Defended their

:32:50. > :32:55.team sprint title here in Rio. Constable was part of the Australian

:32:56. > :33:00.team sprint squad. It looks like constable wants to ride it from the

:33:01. > :33:08.front. Skin is Abbey derived from the back. His only team-mate win

:33:09. > :33:18.from the back. -- he saw his team-mate win from the back.

:33:19. > :33:27.Just sneaking in, Callum Skinner. So, so close. He had to do a whole

:33:28. > :33:32.lot of work on the last bend. Callum Skinner just gets home ahead of

:33:33. > :33:37.Patrick Constable. Nearly spoke too soon. Constable had a bit of kit

:33:38. > :33:40.coming out of the last bend. As to make skin work for it. That was a

:33:41. > :33:45.brilliant ride by the young Australian.

:33:46. > :33:50.Let's take a look at the closing stages. He had to work for it, but

:33:51. > :33:53.you called it that half a lap to go, he's got this. It wasn't quite as

:33:54. > :34:04.close as it looked. Constable wrote that well. He kept the pace high,

:34:05. > :34:09.but didn't commit too soon. Callum didn't panic. You can see the pace

:34:10. > :34:14.he had in the last corner. A win by half a wheel is all you need at this

:34:15. > :34:18.stage. Constable tried everything there, he thought he would try a bit

:34:19. > :34:21.of a long one. Stretch it out, because sometimes when you realise

:34:22. > :34:26.you are up against someone who has quicker speed, that is the only way

:34:27. > :34:30.you can go. If you are up against someone a lot quicker, that swings

:34:31. > :34:36.and situations. Among goes straight from the gun for a three lap

:34:37. > :34:40.stunning start that rare. Callum wasn't really tested there, but it

:34:41. > :34:46.is always good to get a good hard race out of your legs before you get

:34:47. > :34:48.to the later stages. He has avoided the repecharge, as well. Callum

:34:49. > :34:59.Skinner the second fastest qualifier. Matthew Glaetzer was

:35:00. > :35:14.third fastest. He goes up against the German, Maximilian Levy.

:35:15. > :35:41.COMMENTATOR:. The third Olympic Games for the German.

:35:42. > :35:48.Repecharge has a long, strong sprint. That is one of his real

:35:49. > :35:55.advantage and he is very aerodynamic, as well. See his

:35:56. > :35:58.position, ye is low at the front, which maximises his aerodynamics and

:35:59. > :36:02.he gets a lot of power in that position. He won't mind along

:36:03. > :36:10.sprint. He is comfortable at the back, but will he wants to take the

:36:11. > :36:15.front? Max Levy just keeping an eye on Glaetzer. We have seen in

:36:16. > :36:18.previous rounds how you take your eye off your opponent for one split

:36:19. > :36:30.second, and it can be very, very costly. The Frenchman in the

:36:31. > :36:46.repecharge just looked away and was jumped. You see the determination on

:36:47. > :36:52.ten won's face. Ready to react. He's keeping his eye on Glaetzer all the

:36:53. > :36:59.time. Could be waiting for the second that Max Levy looks away.

:37:00. > :37:06.Levy going hi, looking to use the bank. Now he's trying to pick up the

:37:07. > :37:12.pace of Max Levy by putting pressure on him. He wants to go to the front,

:37:13. > :37:18.put pressure on Max Levy. Very close. He is going to go to the

:37:19. > :37:23.front. A lot of work. Levy has to dig deep to pull it back. He is

:37:24. > :37:28.gaining ground all the time. Repecharge is holding strong.

:37:29. > :37:35.Glaetzer of Australia is going to go through. That is his strength,

:37:36. > :37:39.riding from the front. He has that along sprint in him, he will be

:37:40. > :37:46.happy about this right. JILL DOUGLAS: Chris, what do you

:37:47. > :37:52.make of Glaetzer? Third fastest man in qualifying. A real threat. He is

:37:53. > :38:00.a real powerhouse, very efficient. He gets himself into a aerodynamic

:38:01. > :38:03.position. He has pace. His one weakness is his tactical awareness.

:38:04. > :38:08.He makes mistakes. Not all the time. Slight hesitation in that right.

:38:09. > :38:13.Almost went up the inside of Levy, but went round the outside. 10.1,

:38:14. > :38:21.having gone, backed off and gone again. He will be a threat in the

:38:22. > :38:23.later rounds. Levy now back into the repecharge, another opportunity for

:38:24. > :38:27.him to make it into the quarterfinals. It gives you an

:38:28. > :38:35.advantage if you can avoid that extra run. Absolutely. You look at

:38:36. > :38:39.the number of rides at the end of the six days, these guys are riding

:38:40. > :38:43.all the events, any extra race you don't have to do, you try to avoid

:38:44. > :38:45.it at all costs. For your confidence, you want to win every

:38:46. > :39:15.race. COMMENTATOR: Denis Dmitriev beat the

:39:16. > :39:18.Australian. He has had a good run in the World Championships. Third,

:39:19. > :39:26.second, third and second over the last four Championships. Sam Webster

:39:27. > :39:29.already eight silver medallist at the Rio Olympic Games in the team

:39:30. > :39:34.sprint. He has been through all the processes of warm-ups, once down,

:39:35. > :39:42.wins, losses. Silver medal already at the Rio Olympic Games. Dmitriev

:39:43. > :39:45.is putting everything into the sprint opposition. Can be an

:39:46. > :39:56.advantage or disadvantage, not being through the process of the team

:39:57. > :40:00.sprint. Webster beat Dawkins in the previous round. Very disappointing

:40:01. > :40:06.for the New Zealanders to come up against each other in a round of the

:40:07. > :40:11.sprint. Tactically difference to our previous one. More speed. Webster

:40:12. > :40:16.stays high on the track, wants to get some speed. There is the bell,

:40:17. > :40:23.Webster high, Dmitriev will go to the front. Webster is going the long

:40:24. > :40:26.way round, but going very well. Sam Webster digging deep, Dmitriev on

:40:27. > :40:34.the inside. Coming into the finish straight. Dmitriev goes through,

:40:35. > :40:39.Webster will go to the repecharge. Strong ride by Dmitriev. He rode

:40:40. > :40:48.really, really well. Sam Webster looks good coming around, but stuck.

:40:49. > :40:54.JILL DOUGLAS: Strong ride from the Russian. Yes, Dmitriev probably his

:40:55. > :40:58.favourite. He loves you to a false sense of security. You think he's at

:40:59. > :41:03.full pace and then finds a second gear. You see that drive in the

:41:04. > :41:07.saddle. Webster was coming round the outside, and him out to dry and

:41:08. > :41:12.Dmitriev opened up a gap. It was a great ride. He could be a severe

:41:13. > :41:17.threat later on, he will be up against Jason in the semifinals if

:41:18. > :41:23.the seedings continue as they are. Next up we have Gregory Bauge and

:41:24. > :41:28.Jeffrey Hoogland. The French have been a bit of the pace this time.

:41:29. > :41:32.They did it at the last two Olympic Games, to be honest. They haven't

:41:33. > :41:36.shown the same form as in intermittent years between the

:41:37. > :41:45.games. Gregory Bauge is maybe the exception. He might show some form,

:41:46. > :41:48.but he is so hot and cold. Every was a champion. We were tipping him for

:41:49. > :41:53.great things. He has not gone to the Olympics with the same form. I would

:41:54. > :41:57.expect Gregory Bauge to win this, but it will be close. There is

:41:58. > :42:03.nothing in it in terms of their horrifying times. Gregory Bauge used

:42:04. > :42:10.to strike fear into his opponents. He has lost that. He has. He has one

:42:11. > :42:13.more titles in the last few years, but doesn't have the same

:42:14. > :42:17.invincibility that he had perhaps four or five years ago. Still a

:42:18. > :42:30.classy rider. Let's see how he fares.

:42:31. > :42:36.COMMENTATOR: Been an absolute showman, seen some exciting racing

:42:37. > :42:42.from Gregory Bauge, the French man. So much experience and confidence.

:42:43. > :42:49.Really gets excited with the crowds. Jeffrey Hoogland also a former BMX

:42:50. > :42:51.racket, -- BMX rider, switched into track cycling. Wright right on his

:42:52. > :43:10.wheel, is Jeffrey Hoogland. Staying low at the moment, both of

:43:11. > :43:18.them. Gregory Bauge knows all the tricks, the tactics that go with

:43:19. > :43:21.winning at this level. Coming into the spring competitions, they have

:43:22. > :43:25.so many different tactics in their mind, but they will have one

:43:26. > :43:28.specific tactic of how they want to ride against their competition. They

:43:29. > :43:33.want to be open to anything happening. They have to be

:43:34. > :43:36.responsive to any moves, unexpected moves. Gregory Bauge trying to

:43:37. > :43:43.control things from the middle of the track, keeping an eye on the

:43:44. > :43:46.Dutchman. Gregory Bauge got over Callum Skinner at this phase of the

:43:47. > :43:59.condition in the European Championships.

:44:00. > :44:08.We saw a change again. This Frenchman taking the sprint line.

:44:09. > :44:13.Bauge likes to be at the front and control matters. He is going to come

:44:14. > :44:21.home. Interesting tactics from both riders. Bauge from France who

:44:22. > :44:29.advances to the quarterfinals. JILL DOUGLAS: Repecharge left the

:44:30. > :44:37.door wide open. Bauge will not turn that down. He left the door wide

:44:38. > :44:40.open and had the race there. He will look back and kick himself when he

:44:41. > :44:48.sees that. Bauge said, thank you very much, up the inside. 10.10, it

:44:49. > :44:50.shows the form he is in. He made the first mistake, but made up for it by

:44:51. > :45:01.staying vigilant. As you say, a multiple world

:45:02. > :45:05.champion, he may not have performed in the last couple of years but he

:45:06. > :45:11.will lay it out at an Olympic Games, nobody will want to face him in that

:45:12. > :45:17.form. One of the great races will be the quarterfinal between him and

:45:18. > :45:22.Dimitrov. They are very closely matched, similar riders. One heck of

:45:23. > :45:32.a battle. The next round, Joachim Eilers, more of a Kierin specialist,

:45:33. > :45:36.let's see if you can step up in the sprint. Heat six about to get under

:45:37. > :45:51.way. Xu Chao, only 21, very young,

:45:52. > :46:00.sprinters have a long career. Trying to bring the Chinese male sprinters

:46:01. > :46:03.onto the same level as their women's sprinters, they have some wonderful

:46:04. > :46:04.woman's sprinters as we saw in the team sprint, they won the gold

:46:05. > :46:18.medal. And Joachim Eilers taking the high

:46:19. > :46:24.line. Xu Chao, the youngster, keeping watch on front. They are

:46:25. > :46:42.winding up earlier than others. Here they go. Xu Chao, still holding

:46:43. > :46:47.the lead as they wind it up. He is going to go now. Very early. There

:46:48. > :46:57.is the bell. Joachim Eilers, taking a long run at him. Xu Chao His work

:46:58. > :47:03.to do, will Joachim Eilers be able to get there? He is coming with

:47:04. > :47:10.speed. Joachim Eilers His work to do, but he does it. Tactically

:47:11. > :47:20.astute. Very cleverly done. He takes the win over Xu Chao. He decided to

:47:21. > :47:28.come from the back and was 100% committed to staying relaxed,

:47:29. > :47:34.sticking to his tactics. JILL: That is the only seat where the lower

:47:35. > :47:37.ranked rider has prevailed. The difference was so small that it was

:47:38. > :47:49.always going to be the closest match. Joachim Eilers, he just has

:47:50. > :47:53.that length to his sprint. He is a Keirin specialist and played into

:47:54. > :47:58.his hands. Biding his time, cruised past him on the finish line. A

:47:59. > :48:07.really controlled ride from Joachim Eilers. We have still got the

:48:08. > :48:13.repechage two go, but of the main riders, who has impressed? The

:48:14. > :48:25.British, Jason and Calum have been impressive so far. And if Dmitriev

:48:26. > :48:34.controls the pace he is a hard rider to get around. And Bauge is

:48:35. > :48:35.definitely one to watch, he has the big temperament, can deal with the

:48:36. > :48:51.pressure. Glaetzer, could be the Joker in the

:48:52. > :48:57.pack. But at the moment Jason Kenny looks to be just a notch above

:48:58. > :49:01.everybody else. We will see him in action later on and Calum Skinner,

:49:02. > :49:12.the best-of-3. We can take a quick look back at the woman's Keirin and

:49:13. > :49:19.the crash in that earlier heat. Have you ever seen anything like it? It

:49:20. > :49:24.was the fault of the French rider who completely lost her balance. The

:49:25. > :49:28.Dutch rider is literally opt on the fence, sandwiched between the French

:49:29. > :49:34.rider and defence. I have seen people do it as a stunt, but never

:49:35. > :49:38.actually in a race. Thankfully she managed to stay upright because it

:49:39. > :49:41.could be really nasty. I have seen racers go over the barrier into the

:49:42. > :49:45.crowd and it is not great. We wondered how she managed to stay on

:49:46. > :49:53.her bike, it was some piece of handling. We will be back here on

:49:54. > :49:56.BBC Four at 3:25pm UK time to see the semifinals of the women's team

:49:57. > :50:01.pursuit. Great Britain are in that one. In the meantime, back to you,

:50:02. > :50:09.Ore. Yes, we look forward to that,

:50:10. > :50:13.because they are in world record form, the women's team pursuit team,

:50:14. > :50:19.so we will look to see if they can do just as the men did, get a world

:50:20. > :50:23.record and most importantly, gold medal in the velodrome. We are now

:50:24. > :50:26.going to talk athletics. You will remember that for years ago we

:50:27. > :50:32.enjoyed one of the greatest days in British sporting history. Four years

:50:33. > :50:38.later we are all set up to possibly do it again. If you are a Team GB

:50:39. > :50:44.fan, Saturdays will never be the same again. A whole host of things

:50:45. > :50:50.have happened ever since. The stadium erupts. Three gold medals

:50:51. > :50:59.for Great Britain. What a night. What a night. One never to be

:51:00. > :51:10.forgotten. But that was then, life moves on. The world keeps turning.

:51:11. > :51:13.So what came next? Just one year later at the World Championships in

:51:14. > :51:19.Moscow in the home comforts of London seemed a distant memory.

:51:20. > :51:25.Frustration for Greg Rutherford. Injured, and failing to make the

:51:26. > :51:33.long jump final. Jessica Ennis Hill. Also injured, did not even go to

:51:34. > :51:41.Moscow. All down to Mo Farah, the last of the golden trio. He is

:51:42. > :51:44.running for greatness. Great Britain's most decorated athlete in

:51:45. > :51:59.history, stretching out, forging ahead. This is world domination for

:52:00. > :52:02.Mo Farah. Until the following April and a new challenge, a different

:52:03. > :52:10.distance on the familiar London street. And not out in front. And

:52:11. > :52:18.when Glasgow welcomed the Commonwealth in the summer, Mo Farah

:52:19. > :52:21.missed out. His soon to be injured. Jessica was happier not to be in

:52:22. > :52:29.Glasgow, about to welcome her first son into the world. For Greg,

:52:30. > :52:34.Glasgow was a point of restart. Greg Rutherford is the Commonwealth

:52:35. > :52:41.champion. Before the year was out they added a European title to his

:52:42. > :52:46.collection. Also in Zurich, Mo Farah back on the track completing another

:52:47. > :52:52.double. Meanwhile, is the nights grew longer over Sheffield, Jessica

:52:53. > :53:02.returned to training, forging a steely athletic will. Time, ticking

:53:03. > :53:07.toward Rio. First, a stern test at the World Championships, in Beijing.

:53:08. > :53:16.Greg Rutherford, one jump away from joining a special band of buttons.

:53:17. > :53:22.He completes his Grand Slam. Olympic, European, Commonwealth, and

:53:23. > :53:30.world champion. Mo Farah, about to join an even more exclusive club. He

:53:31. > :53:38.is the only one in it. Mo Farah, world champion again. Jessica eased

:53:39. > :53:43.her way back into competition. She had nothing to prove, but she proved

:53:44. > :53:53.it anyway. She comes back to storm passed Canadian. Jessica Ennis Hill

:53:54. > :54:01.is back on top of the world. Three then, three now. That day is here

:54:02. > :54:05.again. Super Saturday. Time will move on. But might the world be

:54:06. > :54:16.stopped in its tracks again? We are privileged to have those

:54:17. > :54:21.three in the Team GB ranks and we know that so many of you are looking

:54:22. > :54:26.forward to seeing whether they can repeat Super Saturday tonight. Let's

:54:27. > :54:34.not delay. Let's move from the Olympic Park to the Maracana

:54:35. > :54:39.Stadium, where Gabby and the guys have the best seat in the house.

:54:40. > :54:47.Good afternoon to you in the UK. It is a gorgeous day today. Yesterday

:54:48. > :54:52.there was rain and cloud, the queues outside were about 20 people deep,

:54:53. > :54:56.we were very excited, and you have just a shot of a stand which is not

:54:57. > :55:02.many people in it but I assure you there are more people today, the

:55:03. > :55:08.samba and is out, and I don't want us to mention the less words. I

:55:09. > :55:17.don't want to jinx the feeling. -- the s words. Mo Farah, Greg

:55:18. > :55:22.Rutherford, and Jessica Ennis Hill, but there's a long way to go first,

:55:23. > :55:28.Michael and Denise are alongside me for what promises to be a fantastic

:55:29. > :55:35.session. It is not just about tonight. It kicks off shortly with

:55:36. > :55:38.the long jump, and Jessica Ennis Hill and Katarina Johnson Thompson

:55:39. > :55:43.are finely poised for medals, but there is a long way to go with a lot

:55:44. > :55:48.of competition out there. There is a lot of competition. The women are

:55:49. > :55:52.tired, it was a long schedule yesterday. But this is an event

:55:53. > :55:56.where Katarina can really turn things around. She is in fourth

:55:57. > :56:01.position at the moment, long jump is one of her best events. She will

:56:02. > :56:05.need to be there. She will need to be in that moment where she feels

:56:06. > :56:10.good. We saw a little bit of negative body language post the

:56:11. > :56:16.event yesterday. Hugely disappointed with her third shot. And also her

:56:17. > :56:21.200 metres, even though I thought it was not so bad. But this is where

:56:22. > :56:24.she must be strong, put to bed the Demons of last year with the three

:56:25. > :56:30.files on the long jump, and come out strong. It is almost tame economic

:56:31. > :56:35.way that Jessica goes about it, looking very steady old way through

:56:36. > :56:39.-- metronomic way. But the Katarina you are looking to see how she deals

:56:40. > :56:43.with the disappointment of Beijing and how she comes out today, will

:56:44. > :56:47.you know immediately from her body language what is in store? It is

:56:48. > :56:52.difficult, because when she is locked in she is not super high

:56:53. > :56:56.energy to begin with. Just baseline. But you can really tell when she

:56:57. > :57:00.gets down, then you can see it in the body language, her face, her

:57:01. > :57:04.disappointment, and she is not able to get herself out of it. The hope

:57:05. > :57:09.is that a nice rest and coming out on a fresh day will make the

:57:10. > :57:13.difference. We saw it yesterday, from event to event on the same day

:57:14. > :57:19.she does not have the ability to get out of it, put it aside and move on.

:57:20. > :57:28.If it is me, I just watching Jessica and doing what she does. Steely

:57:29. > :57:32.eyes, going about her thing. Do that as well, because it is effective, it

:57:33. > :57:38.works. Very briefly, the woman's 400. The seeds are about to begin.

:57:39. > :57:45.The USA has seven of the top nine times in the world this year, will

:57:46. > :57:52.you dominate? Again, a really difficult qualification system in

:57:53. > :57:57.the USA left out Courtney Okolo who had one of the best times in the

:57:58. > :58:03.world. You have a listen Felix, running well, but only the second

:58:04. > :58:10.fastest time in the world -- Alison. We will now a little bit more after

:58:11. > :58:15.the first round. : we will talk about the appearance of Usain Bolt

:58:16. > :58:25.later on, Colin Jackson, just say hello! Just so you know I am here!

:58:26. > :58:42.The first of the eight seats in the woman's 400 metres. Two go through

:58:43. > :59:04.automatically. Patience George, the Nigerian, Rubie, of Australia, and

:59:05. > :59:08.Latiseva-Cudare Latvia. The Jamaican, the winner of Commonwealth

:59:09. > :59:14.gold in Glasgow a fuse. Here we go, says the stadium announcer. -- in

:59:15. > :59:20.Glasgow a few years ago. They were queueing around the block today. We

:59:21. > :59:30.are told by our local Brazilian fixer that it is for Usain Bolt

:59:31. > :59:32.later on. Patients George, the Nigerian champion, twice a bronze

:59:33. > :59:41.medallist in the African Championships. 51. 06 this season.

:59:42. > :59:48.To give you another reference point, the quickest in the world is Miller

:59:49. > :59:51.of the Bahamas, 49.55. Five women have gone below 50 seconds,

:59:52. > :00:01.Stephanie and MacPherson is just outside that at 50.04.

:00:02. > :00:11.Eight seats in total. The first two go through automatically, with the

:00:12. > :00:22.eighth fastest losers. Patience George, Stephenie Ann

:00:23. > :00:27.McPherson, Anneliese Rubie, Iuliia Olishevska, Djenebou Dante, Gunta

:00:28. > :00:37.Latiseva-cudare Ari. Stephenie Ann McPherson taking it

:00:38. > :00:42.out at a fairly steady pace. Patients George moving up on her a

:00:43. > :00:48.little bit. Stephenie Ann McPherson not the most powerful runner but she

:00:49. > :00:54.moves along so briskly and beginning to make her presence felt. Strolling

:00:55. > :00:59.past Anneliese Rubie out. A good run from Iuliia Olishevska. And Patience

:01:00. > :01:03.George on the inside. It may well be Patience George and Stephenie Ann

:01:04. > :01:09.McPherson. She comes away, Stephenie Ann McPherson clear of the rest and

:01:10. > :01:14.two to go through automatically, and Patience George, perhaps a little

:01:15. > :01:18.look around, the others are closing quickly. Anneliese Rubie trying to

:01:19. > :01:23.get back. Patience George just going to run out of time on the line.

:01:24. > :01:28.Stephenie Ann McPherson takes it ahead of Patience George, who was

:01:29. > :01:32.pretty much spent at the end. Anneliese Rubie finishing quickly.

:01:33. > :01:37.Those are the two that go through automatically. 51.36. The name and

:01:38. > :01:45.MacPherson, well within her comfort zone. -- for Stephenie Ann

:01:46. > :01:49.McPherson. Stephenie Ann McPherson the anyone who looked comfortable.

:01:50. > :01:56.Patience George absolutely flat chases her around the first 200m.

:01:57. > :02:00.And then Anneliese Rubie finishes strongly. At this point, you think

:02:01. > :02:04.she has too much to do. A bit like the men, I am not too sure what to

:02:05. > :02:09.expect in round one. Only a handful of women have run under 50 this

:02:10. > :02:14.year. Stephenie Ann McPherson will fancy her chances of a medal,

:02:15. > :02:18.outside chances. Comfortable enough for her, but everyone else having to

:02:19. > :02:30.work a little bit harder. So a third place for Anneliese Rubie, 51.9% to.

:02:31. > :02:31.Only the fastest two will go through so a lot of the athletes will be

:02:32. > :02:42.looking at Michael, it went with form, really.

:02:43. > :02:45.Yes, and Stephenie Ann McPherson was the class of that field and one of

:02:46. > :02:48.the athletes who certainly should be in the final and as Andrew said,

:02:49. > :02:55.could figure into the medals as well. These early rounds, it is very

:02:56. > :02:59.difficult to see anything of significance, because you are going

:03:00. > :03:03.to have more races like that where you have Stephenie Ann McPherson,

:03:04. > :03:08.the class of the field, everyone else almost one second down from

:03:09. > :03:12.her. What we will find from those is not necessarily anything about the

:03:13. > :03:16.big ones like Allyson Felix and Shaunae Miller, we might find who

:03:17. > :03:21.else can get themselves into the final. How difficult is it as a 400m

:03:22. > :03:26.runner in these early rounds when you are running against people who

:03:27. > :03:30.are sometimes nowhere near world-class, like in the Diamond

:03:31. > :03:34.League? Sometimes you have to run those preliminary rounds like a

:03:35. > :03:39.final. The 400m is difficult and it can take a lot out of you. You are

:03:40. > :03:46.better off running it like a final, it will take a lot out, then focus

:03:47. > :03:50.on recovery. These athletes will run again tomorrow, they have more than

:03:51. > :03:54.a day, they run tomorrow night, very late, so they have 36 hours to get

:03:55. > :03:58.ready the next round, so that is plenty of time to recover. But it is

:03:59. > :04:03.tough to navigate the rounds, especially the first one. When she

:04:04. > :04:07.get into the semifinals, then it becomes a little bit more of the

:04:08. > :04:13.familiar faces and competition between the athletes. We are going

:04:14. > :04:19.to get on now with the second heat. Seren Bundy-davies in for Great

:04:20. > :04:24.Britain. A disappointing Anniversary Games. And Allyson Felix as well. Is

:04:25. > :04:29.it good for Seren Bundy-davies to have her inside her? It is, because

:04:30. > :04:35.Allyson Felix is going to run a good-quality raise. You need to stay

:04:36. > :04:40.close to Alysson and keep your eye on the rest of the field. The good

:04:41. > :04:46.thing for Seren is she is on the inside lane and can keep her eyes on

:04:47. > :04:52.the rest of the field. The key is that with 100m to go, you don't

:04:53. > :04:57.leave yourself too much to do, be right there in second position with

:04:58. > :05:04.100m to go. Her first Olympic Games, 21 years old. I imagine she is full

:05:05. > :05:09.of excitement. Unlike last night, her name tag is completely secure.

:05:10. > :05:13.Steve Cram will take this one for us.

:05:14. > :05:35.CRAM: before that, we have the result for you. A season best time.

:05:36. > :05:48.So lane one is empty, so Seren Bundy-Davis, the first name on the

:05:49. > :06:01.list. Allyson Felix outside her. Tamara sa Lasky -- Tamara Salaski

:06:02. > :06:06.from Serbia. A pretty even race, really, and Seren Bundy-Davis

:06:07. > :06:12.definitely can finish in the top to hear. On paper it she should, but

:06:13. > :06:18.that is another thing entirely, but as we look through the various

:06:19. > :06:25.heats, Christine Ohuruogu goes in four. Emily Diamond has a tough one

:06:26. > :06:39.in five. So Seren, big opportunity here. I'll is a lack will always be

:06:40. > :06:44.someone to content with -- Olha Zemlyak. I always love watching

:06:45. > :06:49.Allyson Felix run. Always an air of serenity about her. Three gold

:06:50. > :06:53.medals in London. Looking to add to that. 30 years of age now, still

:06:54. > :07:01.running well under 50 seconds and with Shaunae Miller, the two who are

:07:02. > :07:09.supposed to contender this gold medal. Can Seren Bundy-Davis make it

:07:10. > :07:14.through this first round? The first two, eight fastest louvres spots. --

:07:15. > :07:36.fastest losers' spots. Olha Zemlyak the last to settle in

:07:37. > :07:41.lane five. Cleanly away and Allyson Felix, that lovely action of hers,

:07:42. > :07:46.and the speed she possesses takes away quickly from Bundy Davis and

:07:47. > :07:52.she is hitting it hard through these first 200m, using the throttle a

:07:53. > :08:00.little bit. She has left Seren Bundy-Davies with a little bit of

:08:01. > :08:09.work to do. Olha Zemlyak going well. Showlah fellow deep going well. If

:08:10. > :08:14.she has two stay calm here and work her way round that in a curve. It is

:08:15. > :08:27.a long way and Seren Bundy Davis is going backwards now. Zemlyak pushes

:08:28. > :08:33.Herbert Alysson picks it up again. And Seren B may well have been last

:08:34. > :08:37.there. I am not sure, I have no idea. It wasn't a great performance,

:08:38. > :08:42.we mentioned, in the London Diamond League, but that is not what she

:08:43. > :08:47.would have expected. As expected from Allyson Felix and we will have

:08:48. > :08:50.a look at the two of them and I am a little bit lost for words. I think

:08:51. > :08:54.Seren Bundy-Davies will have do explain herself what happened there,

:08:55. > :09:01.but she must have been running about 54 seconds. OK, Michael, Allyson

:09:02. > :09:07.Felix, that is an easy one for you, but Seren Bundy-Davies? As I said,

:09:08. > :09:11.she didn't position herself early enough in the race to be in the race

:09:12. > :09:15.and in the competition. She will probably say I have got Allyson

:09:16. > :09:19.Felix, world-class athlete and Olympic champion at 200m, amazing

:09:20. > :09:23.speed, in front of me and I am not going to run with her but you need

:09:24. > :09:28.to, you need to use Allyson Felix in order to be in contention with the

:09:29. > :09:32.other athletes and you see, with 50m to go, she is in contention with

:09:33. > :09:37.her, so she did not use the fact that she had Allyson Felix out in

:09:38. > :09:42.front. She is going to get out quickly, she is a 200m Olympic and

:09:43. > :09:48.world champion. She is at last. Use that as a rabbit, use that and if

:09:49. > :09:53.you can follow a faster athlete, you run much more relaxed. But at this

:09:54. > :09:58.point, she has lost complete contact with Alison and so now, with all of

:09:59. > :10:01.the other athletes being far outside her, she doesn't have contact with

:10:02. > :10:06.anyone and she is basically running a time trial on her own with nothing

:10:07. > :10:09.to judge and that was a wasted opportunity, but this was all was

:10:10. > :10:14.going to be difficult, no doubt about it. As you see, she is

:10:15. > :10:18.starting to come into her own and use speed and power but you have to

:10:19. > :10:22.use that when it is fresh, in the first part of the race. She has left

:10:23. > :10:27.it when you are in their petite stage. It is backwards, the way she

:10:28. > :10:31.has tried to run it so unfortunately, that is not going to

:10:32. > :10:37.work out because of the way the first 200m went. Allyson Felix very

:10:38. > :10:40.relaxed, looking at the screen, checking her position. Great

:10:41. > :10:45.qualification from Alysson. This is her first Olympics as a 400m

:10:46. > :10:49.athlete, so I am sure she had some nerves coming into this but this is

:10:50. > :10:53.a good qualification for her, and easy qualification as well which

:10:54. > :10:58.will put her into good stead for tomorrow night's semifinal. Seren

:10:59. > :11:01.Bundy-Davies again, it was all was going to be tough but I agree with

:11:02. > :11:09.Steve, she will feel she got that one wrong and it was a missed

:11:10. > :11:14.opportunity. We will find out now. There is some puzzlement as to what

:11:15. > :11:17.happened out there. Yes, I am in a lot better shape than that and I

:11:18. > :11:21.have come to be been winning at times quicker than that. I will have

:11:22. > :11:24.to watch it back and see what happened, I really disappointed.

:11:25. > :11:30.Maybe I panicked around the top bend but I'm really disappointed. I think

:11:31. > :11:34.I am in PB shape. What about the Allyson Felix factor, on your

:11:35. > :11:40.outside and goes tearing off. Had that affect you at all? From the

:11:41. > :11:45.outset, I knew I had to run my own race, I knew she would go hard. I

:11:46. > :11:48.think I panicked a bit on the top bend when everyone was quite a head.

:11:49. > :11:52.I am really disappointed, I don't really know what happened so I need

:11:53. > :11:58.to go back and analyse but I am pretty gutted. We appreciate you

:11:59. > :12:04.talking to us, thank you. She said she would have to go back and look

:12:05. > :12:11.at it. 53.63 takes a little bit of explaining. It is a good two seconds

:12:12. > :12:15.slower than she is capable of. Anyway, Allyson Felix with a winning

:12:16. > :12:27.time and Zemlyak with a decent run. The others look a little slow for

:12:28. > :12:30.fastest losers spots. The men's discus final, Christoph Harting, the

:12:31. > :12:36.younger brother of the reigning Olympic champion Robert, who went

:12:37. > :12:46.out in qualification. It is a big throw. Opened with 62.30 eight. --

:12:47. > :12:54.62 when 38. The question was whether he had his championship temperament

:12:55. > :12:57.of his older brother, who threw 68.27 to win gold four years ago.

:12:58. > :13:04.Maybe his younger brother can take his place. Good technique. He is

:13:05. > :13:13.tall and slightly longer limbed and 66.34, into second place behind

:13:14. > :13:24.Pyotr Mallesh skee. -- Pyotr O'Malley Chomsky. Into heat three.

:13:25. > :13:28.There will be a big cheer for the Brazilian athlete Jailma De Lima.

:13:29. > :13:41.Phyllis Francis has gone below 50 seconds this season. There is

:13:42. > :13:46.Phyllis Francis, 49.94, it gave her second place at the US trials behind

:13:47. > :13:50.Allyson Felix. I mentioned earlier, one of five people to have gone

:13:51. > :14:00.below 50 seconds this season. Margaret Bamgbosa of Nigeria, former

:14:01. > :14:04.American, inside her. You might be looking at Phyllis Francis and

:14:05. > :14:10.Margaret Bamgbosa. Jailma De Lima in-line four. Oluwakemi Adekoya and

:14:11. > :14:22.five. Alicia Brown and six. Just been asked to stand up, a lot

:14:23. > :14:26.of noise, which we positively encourage, good atmosphere. But not

:14:27. > :14:33.necessarily at the start of the sprint. So a bit of Hersh has been

:14:34. > :14:36.called for. We had that last night in the 100m when the Brazilian was

:14:37. > :14:45.racing. If track petticoat has kind of reached the info you get as a

:14:46. > :14:49.spectator... They were getting a bit boisterous towards the end of the

:14:50. > :14:57.evening last night and why not # That was just the commentary box.

:14:58. > :15:01.Jailma De Lima has gone below 52 seconds, just, this season. Four

:15:02. > :15:04.times the Brazilian shambles over the hurdles, concentrating on the

:15:05. > :15:14.flat. Her younger sister is the record-holder in the javelin. So

:15:15. > :15:18.Bamgbosa, Phyllis Francis in three. Alicia Brown of Canada in six.

:15:19. > :15:33.Justine Palframan in lane eight. A door. That'll be Dave MacKenzie.

:15:34. > :15:39.Phyllis Francis making up ground already on the De Lima. Margaret

:15:40. > :15:45.Bamgbosa from Nigeria try to keep pace with Phyllis Francis. So too is

:15:46. > :15:50.Alicia Brown, the Canadian, not too long back from a drug baron. It is

:15:51. > :16:01.the athlete all Kami Adekoya that is looking strong. It is the

:16:02. > :16:08.athlete from Bahrain, Adekoya, looking powerful alongside Phyllis

:16:09. > :16:14.Francis. These two will go through automatically. France's stamps are

:16:15. > :16:30.authority and takes the victory ahead of Adekoya. 50 point 59

:16:31. > :16:35.seconds. -- 50 .59 seconds. We will get combination of that but that'll

:16:36. > :16:43.be a national record and personal best from Adekoya. Adekoya attacked

:16:44. > :16:47.the first 200 so Phyllis Francis had to really attack this bend, running

:16:48. > :16:51.harder than she wanted. She wants to win, you make the point of winning

:16:52. > :16:56.your heat and tactics they brought in the semifinal. If you feed in the

:16:57. > :17:01.home straight you have went too hard in the first 300. She had worked

:17:02. > :17:07.very hard all the way to the line and was rewarded with a fast time.

:17:08. > :17:12.It has been confirmed as a national record for the former Nigerian, now

:17:13. > :17:17.running Bahrain. You will hear me say that phrase a lot, now running

:17:18. > :17:21.for Bahrain. Lots of transfers. That is an issue of the sport needs to

:17:22. > :17:25.get to grips with, in my opinion. That is for another day. Phyllis

:17:26. > :17:31.Francis having to run harder than she would have liked. There is no

:17:32. > :17:34.national -- nationality qualifications in athletics are

:17:35. > :17:38.looser than other sports and the Middle East are taking lots of

:17:39. > :17:43.African athletes. Adekoya now running very well for Bahrain,

:17:44. > :17:51.national record. Those are the two that go through automatically.

:17:52. > :17:57.This is Peter Mallet Joss gave from Poland. He is in the lead and is the

:17:58. > :18:03.big favourite. -- Peter Mallet Kosky.

:18:04. > :18:17.And another from around 67 metres for the big man.

:18:18. > :18:24.Robert Harting did not make the final here in the Olympics. He went

:18:25. > :18:28.out yesterday in the first group when it rained and there was lots of

:18:29. > :18:36.casualties. Including the Commonwealth champion. Peter Mallet

:18:37. > :18:43.housekeeper of Poland looks set to take gold.

:18:44. > :18:47.We will not have any celebrations. They do not sit as well in the

:18:48. > :18:56.morning. Speaking of 2012, Colin Jackson,

:18:57. > :19:01.Christine Ohuruogu is in the next heat, she was a silver-medallist in

:19:02. > :19:08.London, the world champion the year after London. This year, her time

:19:09. > :19:11.means for 13 seasons in succession she is the quickest women over 400

:19:12. > :19:15.metres for Great Britain but there was controversy about selection. She

:19:16. > :19:22.was not the quickest at the trials. Some feel that history is what has

:19:23. > :19:26.got here. It would be a brave man to doubt what Christine can do at major

:19:27. > :19:30.championships. We can witness watching produces. When you have a

:19:31. > :19:34.precedent set in the trial circumstantial, it can be difficult

:19:35. > :19:41.to encourage younger athletes to do what is necessary to be selected.

:19:42. > :19:45.That is the athlete who had beaten her countless times and beaten her

:19:46. > :19:50.at the trials but was left out the individual event. We are sometimes

:19:51. > :19:54.giving messages that are not accurate for younger athletes to

:19:55. > :19:59.inspire them to get on the team. What we do know is that she can

:20:00. > :20:01.perform on the biggest age and she times higher seasons to perfection.

:20:02. > :20:07.Do you think this will add pressure to her here, with that selection

:20:08. > :20:12.quandary going on? Is she the tape of athlete that can cope with that

:20:13. > :20:15.and put it out her mind? She's the type of athlete that can get past

:20:16. > :20:20.that. She knows she was selected for a reason and that she is capable.

:20:21. > :20:23.But of the reason that she has performed so well at championships

:20:24. > :20:27.is because she deals with pressure, she handles it very well. I do not

:20:28. > :20:31.think that she will feel that pressure. She will do what you

:20:32. > :20:35.always does, she is a veteran and has done so many times and knows

:20:36. > :20:38.what to do. I would agree with Colin, I am not sure that they are

:20:39. > :20:47.sending the right message to the young athletes when Christine was

:20:48. > :20:53.selected. Steve Cram is the commentator.

:20:54. > :21:01.COMMENTATOR: I am sure this debate will continue after this race. I do

:21:02. > :21:09.think that Christine, most people will say, she deserves the chance.

:21:10. > :21:12.Given what we have seen from Seren Bundy-Davies and Emily Diamond to

:21:13. > :21:15.come in the next heat as well which is tough, Christine might be the

:21:16. > :21:20.only one that will go through. Emily will have something to say about

:21:21. > :21:24.that. Christine has to take care of business, in lane eight Mac. You

:21:25. > :21:29.sort Natasha Hastings, the two of them know each other well and have

:21:30. > :21:34.raced each other on countless occasions. Natasha Hastings is in

:21:35. > :21:40.better form, 51.17 seconds. She was ahead of Christine any diamond lead.

:21:41. > :21:49.Christine has been getting better. Has she moved on from that? The top

:21:50. > :21:59.two to go through. Christine Ohuruogu and Natasha Hastings other

:22:00. > :22:07.big names. Lydia Jele a is having a good season. You have to attack this

:22:08. > :22:11.first 200 metres. She has got through this first 200 pretty

:22:12. > :22:16.quickly, Christine Ohuruogu. Hastings Rasani lead. The Italian

:22:17. > :22:24.tried to bring the other three back into the race. The athlete from

:22:25. > :22:28.Botswana, Lydia Jele is doing well and so is Maria Benedicta Chigbolu.

:22:29. > :22:32.Christine are starting to come through. Get into second place and

:22:33. > :22:41.this looks like the old Christine. Hastings is going to win it. 51.32

:22:42. > :22:48.seconds. Christine will see it was hard work. All of that experience

:22:49. > :22:51.coming into play, did not panic, got out well through the first 200

:22:52. > :22:56.metres and gave a cell that chance. We know that she is running well and

:22:57. > :23:02.she finishes strongly. She had to pick up a little bit on the home

:23:03. > :23:05.straight. Michael, Natasha Hastings attacks the first 200 very hard

:23:06. > :23:09.pitch Christine did enough to give herself a chance in the home

:23:10. > :23:13.straight, she did. This was always going to be a little bit difficult

:23:14. > :23:17.in out in lane eight Mac known that Hastings was on the inside and would

:23:18. > :23:21.run quickly through the first 200 metres as she always does. This is

:23:22. > :23:26.where Christine comes into her own. It looks like the Christine of old.

:23:27. > :23:30.Able to come off the bend and perfect position and in contention

:23:31. > :23:35.for second. Reading Hastings out of it and she only needs to finish top

:23:36. > :23:39.two. She uses that strength. Christina is a very strong 400-metre

:23:40. > :23:42.runner. She is able to use that strength coming down the home

:23:43. > :23:48.stretch. And finish in second position. This team is never going

:23:49. > :23:51.to be blazing out of the blocks like you saw with Hastings or you might

:23:52. > :24:01.see with Allyson Felix or Shaunae Miller. She was nice and lacks down

:24:02. > :24:06.the back stretch. -- relaxed. There are some activity on the inside,

:24:07. > :24:09.Hastings the race favourite for this particular heat, coming up and

:24:10. > :24:14.making up the stagger. Christine Still running her own race. She does

:24:15. > :24:19.not respond to Hastings and now she has in her sights. This is veteran

:24:20. > :24:23.running. Making sure you stay in contact and do not lose contact. She

:24:24. > :24:28.is now in great position. Starting to pick it up. Using perform, great

:24:29. > :24:33.technique. What you want to look for is not a lot of wasted motion, her

:24:34. > :24:39.shoulders are nice and even. She is believing relaxed. You are very

:24:40. > :24:42.fatigued at this point but to try harder at this point only makes it

:24:43. > :24:46.worse. They keep doing what you're doing, keeping your form. That is

:24:47. > :24:51.something that Christine will have known from years of racing at this

:24:52. > :24:55.level and as we talked about several times this morning, that experience

:24:56. > :24:59.as an Olympic champion and world champion, and a great performer at

:25:00. > :25:05.that level pays off to get the second place and qualification. Well

:25:06. > :25:11.done, mission accomplished. You have done it so many times before, it any

:25:12. > :25:16.easier or any less nervous? I wish it died. Doesn't. About how you

:25:17. > :25:26.perform, that looked impressive. I wanted a comfortable run. So I could

:25:27. > :25:28.come back for tomorrow. And you have been growing in influence through

:25:29. > :25:35.the season to get this point, are you where you need to be? Good

:25:36. > :25:40.question. Nothing has been ideal. I just have to roll with it and make

:25:41. > :25:48.the best that you can. Thank you for talking to us.

:25:49. > :25:54.COMMENTATOR: She seemed to be tired from that but probably expecting,

:25:55. > :26:01.there has to be more to come if she is to get out of the semifinal. She

:26:02. > :26:04.is through 51.4 seconds. 52.06 seconds is pretty quick from Maria

:26:05. > :26:16.Benedicta Chigbolu. Christine does look great for me.

:26:17. > :26:19.She has had a big journey. She cocoons herself in a position where

:26:20. > :26:23.she is unaffected by others around her. She is at these championships

:26:24. > :26:27.because she knows there's an opportunity. We have seen her

:26:28. > :26:32.comeback from being out of sorts to being a contender medals. Thank you

:26:33. > :26:36.for the moment. We're going to enjoy the rest of the 400-metre heats and

:26:37. > :26:40.we will bring you up to speed. You are going back to the cycling.

:26:41. > :26:50.But first, great British medal alert. It has come in the rolling.

:26:51. > :26:55.This is the women's race. Great Britain have won a medal in the

:26:56. > :26:59.women's eight Mac. It is the fourth of the rowing regatta so far. They

:27:00. > :27:06.have just been edged out on the line by the USA. Great Britain coming

:27:07. > :27:13.away with the Silver Medal to add to the Silver for Kath Grainger and the

:27:14. > :27:19.women's pair and the men's four. The USA taking the title. Moving this

:27:20. > :27:20.way because it is time to get into the velodrome and here comes the

:27:21. > :27:31.girls. The women's team pursuit. We are adding to the first round but

:27:32. > :27:35.effectively it is the semifinal and Great Britain will ride. The winner

:27:36. > :27:43.of the arrest will go into the Gold Medal race this afternoon. We are

:27:44. > :27:46.tidying up some of the lesser placings. A wonderful opportunity

:27:47. > :27:59.for the British girls, the defending champions to get into the. The

:28:00. > :28:03.Americans are the biggest threat. We do not see them at their best in

:28:04. > :28:05.qualifying. The next about winning about winning and winning

:28:06. > :28:13.comfortably and saving energy for the Gold Medal. Great Britain

:28:14. > :28:18.against Canada. They qualified quicker than the Canadians. What is

:28:19. > :28:22.the strategy? Do you rate as hard as you can to make sure you can get

:28:23. > :28:26.into the Gold Medal or do you want some back for later? You always want

:28:27. > :28:29.energy but you do not want to make mistakes. It is about being clinical

:28:30. > :28:35.and efficient. If you change too much it can upset your rhythm. When

:28:36. > :28:42.you do not go flat out, problems can arise. The girls will try to focus

:28:43. > :28:45.on being 99% effort. They will be nearly world record and perhaps

:28:46. > :28:49.quicker than the world record. The big rival company final and we

:28:50. > :28:53.expected to be against the Americans. America take on Australia

:28:54. > :28:57.in the other semifinal. The Australians disappointed as far as

:28:58. > :29:01.the member concerned last night, settling for silver. The women's

:29:02. > :29:05.team will be very happy if they can make it into this final because the

:29:06. > :29:09.Americans, as world champions, have been the team to beat. They have.

:29:10. > :29:13.There's been a lot said about the new technology on their bikes. They

:29:14. > :29:24.have left-hand side drive change cranks. -- chain. The students had

:29:25. > :29:28.the terrible accident in training, Mel Hoskins crashed into the entire

:29:29. > :29:32.team down. She was in a bad way but she was able to write. They were not

:29:33. > :29:39.at the best. They need everything to be working in favour the articles to

:29:40. > :29:43.the Americans. The Dutch rider that we saw doing that spectacular rate

:29:44. > :29:47.of the advertising hoardings, she went into the repechage round she

:29:48. > :29:53.won. We will see her later with her magical bike handling skills. Let us

:29:54. > :29:56.go to the women's team pursuit. This is the second of four heats. After

:29:57. > :30:05.this hit will be the first effectively of the two semifinals.

:30:06. > :30:18.COMMENTATOR: The lead is just below half a second. Poland are driving

:30:19. > :30:25.around, on the front for Poland is Natalia Rutkowska.

:30:26. > :30:31.Leaving gaps between the wheels, which means they are under more

:30:32. > :30:35.pressure than some of the riders. Bigger gaps than the New Zealand

:30:36. > :30:41.team. They have done a lot of training together, looking very

:30:42. > :30:46.smooth. Racquel Sheath will take over for New Zealand. Riding fit

:30:47. > :30:52.here at the Olympic Games, they would have loved to have been in

:30:53. > :30:56.contention for the medals -- fifth. Over two seconds for New Zealand,

:30:57. > :31:04.this is looking to be a really good ride from the Kiwis, looking strong

:31:05. > :31:11.and very cohesive at the moment. Edyta Jasinska swings off for

:31:12. > :31:17.Poland. Two seconds between them, New Zealand looking very nice out

:31:18. > :31:23.there, very controlled. In control at the moment, the Kiwis. Good ride

:31:24. > :31:31.by New Zealand. The lead is getting bigger and bigger all the time now.

:31:32. > :31:37.The polls have lost one rider. -- the Polish. New Zealand have Poland

:31:38. > :31:42.in their sights now, that will be helpful for a good time and a good

:31:43. > :31:45.time is what they would like to have, to finish fifth. They are

:31:46. > :31:58.racing against the other teams, we have seen China out already. Natalia

:31:59. > :32:03.Rutkowska out for Poland. The team looking strong, New Zealand, for a

:32:04. > :32:08.good time. This will help them, having the Polish inside. Lauren

:32:09. > :32:12.Ellis, Racquel Sheath and Jamie Wilson for New Zealand. Poland have

:32:13. > :32:18.almost fallen apart there. And here come New Zealand, they really are on

:32:19. > :32:25.a power ride here. Poland are going to be caught. The New Zealanders

:32:26. > :32:31.will now have to do a pass, that will cost them a little bit of time.

:32:32. > :32:35.They will have to be very careful, New Zealand lost a bit of time.

:32:36. > :32:42.Poland are going to be passed. New Zealand are trying to post a time,

:32:43. > :32:50.they have to get passed as quickly as possible. It is very hard for the

:32:51. > :32:54.third rider of the New Zealand team to get past but they have done it, a

:32:55. > :33:03.superb ride. This is going to be a nice time. A very good ride. A very,

:33:04. > :33:12.very impressive ride by New Zealand. They went new merit -- they went

:33:13. > :33:17.better than in qualifying and this will be good enough to put them in

:33:18. > :33:21.at least fifth place in the Olympic Games. They will be delighted with

:33:22. > :33:28.that right. Pitt Place, unfortunately they did not have such

:33:29. > :33:30.a good ride in the round is to be in medal contention but that is the

:33:31. > :33:41.best they can do today -- fifth place. Poland, once they lost a

:33:42. > :33:48.rider, they started to crack and New Zealand were able to make the catch.

:33:49. > :33:53.And a very tricky negotiation around the corner. They got round safely

:33:54. > :34:08.and Lauren Ellis, Racquel Sheath, Jamie Wilson -- Nilsson, a very

:34:09. > :34:17.impressive ride. The women's team pursuit, this is the first round and

:34:18. > :34:28.this is going to be a race that is going to be fascinating, because it

:34:29. > :34:40.is Australia and the United States. The winners of heats three and four,

:34:41. > :34:48.this is a straight semifinal. Australia, Annette Edmondson, Amy

:34:49. > :34:50.Cure, Melissa Hoskins. This is a very experienced team, the

:34:51. > :34:55.Australians. They have spent so much time together. They did have a very

:34:56. > :34:59.nasty accident in training a few days before the competition started,

:35:00. > :35:02.where each of the team members fell quite hard except for Annette

:35:03. > :35:06.Edmondson, but they have pulled themselves back together and now

:35:07. > :35:10.racing this ground against the Americans to see if they can get

:35:11. > :35:15.into the gold medal ride. The Americans, of course being the world

:35:16. > :35:24.champions. Extremely hard to beat in this round. So the United States,

:35:25. > :35:24.who won the world title in London earlier this year, against

:35:25. > :35:39.Australia. The United States and Australia in

:35:40. > :35:44.the first round of the women's team pursuit, the winner goes through to

:35:45. > :35:51.race off for gold and silver. The loser will battle it out for bronze.

:35:52. > :35:55.For the United States, Sarah Hammer, Kelly Catlin, Chloe Dygert and

:35:56. > :36:02.Jennifer Valente. For Australia, Georgia Baker, Annette Edmondson,

:36:03. > :36:05.Amy Cure and Melissa Hoskins. Welcome at the Americans coming in

:36:06. > :36:10.as the favourites and the world champions, they will be the

:36:11. > :36:18.favourites -- well, the Americans coming in. They will see the fight

:36:19. > :36:21.the Australians put up against Great Britain last night, the Australians.

:36:22. > :36:27.Both teams have looked to come out very, very fast. Australia on the

:36:28. > :36:32.front, with Melissa Hoskins at the moment. The united states driving

:36:33. > :36:38.through young Chloe Dygert, a rich talent, she has brought her own

:36:39. > :36:41.talents to the track. The Australian coach Gary Sutton on the inside of

:36:42. > :36:47.the track indicating to the team that they have gone of above

:36:48. > :36:52.schedule. It has been said that they are riding to a schedule, not

:36:53. > :36:58.specifically against a team on the other side of the track, but what

:36:59. > :37:06.they are capable of. The United States are up by 0.744. The United

:37:07. > :37:10.States have the advantage, I think we are going to see a great time by

:37:11. > :37:14.the Americans. They really want this gold medal at the Olympic Games. The

:37:15. > :37:27.big competition will come from the Great Britain team. 1.339 as they go

:37:28. > :37:36.through 1650. Australia driving it with Georgia Baker. The USA are

:37:37. > :37:41.going superbly well, driving them is Sarah Hammer. This is impressive

:37:42. > :37:45.from the USA team. They have been so strong in the last 12 months. Chloe

:37:46. > :37:48.Dygert won the junior World Championships last year in the road

:37:49. > :37:56.and time trial double in Richmond. Very new to the track but so strong,

:37:57. > :38:02.a new addition to this pursuit team. They have their chains on the inside

:38:03. > :38:06.of the track, the United States, little innovation they have brought

:38:07. > :38:11.to the sport in their search for perfection. They are the first to do

:38:12. > :38:14.it, they have the drive chain on the inside to place the weight on the

:38:15. > :38:20.left side as they go through the left terms. Melissa Hoskins out for

:38:21. > :38:29.Australia. The United States still have four together. The Americans

:38:30. > :38:34.are absolutely flying. Melissa Hoskins dropped out of the

:38:35. > :38:37.Australians, she was the heaviest to fall in training, stretcher to

:38:38. > :38:41.hospital. The Americans are down to three and look like they will do a

:38:42. > :38:45.very fast time. The Australians and a little bit of trouble. Kelly

:38:46. > :38:53.Catlin on the one to drop out for the United States. Jennifer Valente

:38:54. > :38:59.just swinging off and back in. They are riding for a time, they want to

:39:00. > :39:06.be sure to be in the gold medal ride. Absolutely. The United

:39:07. > :39:09.States... They now have Australia in the same straight, that will give

:39:10. > :39:12.them a boost coming into the finish but the Australians are keeping it

:39:13. > :39:19.together with three. The Americans have them in the same straight, they

:39:20. > :39:24.have them inside. Baker swings off. The Americans are driving through

:39:25. > :39:28.Chloe Dygert. Australia just starting to lose their third rider,

:39:29. > :39:33.getting a little ragged as the United States closing on them on the

:39:34. > :39:39.bell. Australia finding it very tough, it could be the effect of the

:39:40. > :39:45.heavy fall, taking its toll. The Americans are absolutely flying.

:39:46. > :39:51.They are charging through, the United States, they have posted an

:39:52. > :39:56.incredible time. A world record! That is a phenomenal ride by the

:39:57. > :40:01.world champions here in Rio, the United States have put a serious

:40:02. > :40:07.marker down for the final. They have broken the world record of Great

:40:08. > :40:12.Britain in this round and that is amazing.

:40:13. > :40:16.What a performance by the Americans, we will see them ride for gold later

:40:17. > :40:19.and we will see the Great Britain team in action shortly against

:40:20. > :40:23.Canada, aiming to make it into that gold medal race later on but now

:40:24. > :40:29.let's get back to RE, who has more good news from the rowing.

:40:30. > :40:33.We do, we will be back in the velodrome shortly, but the bell of

:40:34. > :40:38.British golden moments has just rung again, ding, ding. It has happened

:40:39. > :40:42.in the rowing, it is the men's eight. They streaked ahead of

:40:43. > :40:46.Germany and the Netherlands and hot off the heels of the great British

:40:47. > :40:52.women's eight winning a silver, it is gold for Great Britain. That is

:40:53. > :40:57.now five medals they are up two, three of them gold, so they are

:40:58. > :41:03.celebrating and why wouldn't they? A beautiful day and a golden moment

:41:04. > :41:06.for Great Britain. Fantastic stuff. So a few moments ago in the

:41:07. > :41:11.velodrome, we saw the runners-up from 2012 in the women's team

:41:12. > :41:15.pursuit, USA, hitting a world record. What about the gold medal

:41:16. > :41:19.winners from four years ago? Gill, is it nearly time for the great

:41:20. > :41:23.British women? The British team are just out on the

:41:24. > :41:26.track. They have seen the Americans break the world record, what a

:41:27. > :41:30.gauntlet of throw-down at this stage of the game. It is, but the British

:41:31. > :41:34.team will not be paying attention to that. They will be aware that the

:41:35. > :41:37.record has gone but they will be focusing on their job individually

:41:38. > :41:41.and within the team. They will be very close to that but I wouldn't be

:41:42. > :41:44.too fazed if they don't break the world record in this particular

:41:45. > :41:48.ride, I think they will save it all for the final. All they have to do

:41:49. > :41:52.is be the winners of this eat with a reasonably fast time and it will all

:41:53. > :41:56.be down to the final. What a final it is going to be. But we have this

:41:57. > :42:03.race to go and I am sure the girls will do a fantastic job. Let's get

:42:04. > :42:04.to the action. At tight knit team, they know each

:42:05. > :42:19.other so well. The last heat in the first round of

:42:20. > :42:22.the women's team pursuit, the winner of this heat goes through to the

:42:23. > :42:29.gold medal race. It is Great Britain against Canada. For Great Britain,

:42:30. > :42:37.Katie Archibald, Laura Trott, Elinor Barker and Joanna Rowsell-Shand. For

:42:38. > :42:41.Canada, Jasmin Glaesser, Laura Brown, Monique Sullivan and Georgia

:42:42. > :42:46.Simmerling. They have gone at first but I think we can expect something

:42:47. > :42:51.special from the British team. Not just the women's pursued, every

:42:52. > :42:56.member of the British team has been on their absolute best form. --

:42:57. > :43:03.women's pursuit. A good start from Canada, they take it out nice and

:43:04. > :43:14.smart. British team yet to settle into a rhythm. We could see Great

:43:15. > :43:16.Britain get Canada in the same straight after seeing how

:43:17. > :43:21.impressively the United States broke the world record. They will be

:43:22. > :43:29.feeling the pressure. The Canadian team looking control. Great Britain

:43:30. > :43:45.just edge ahead now. A wealth of experience here. All previous

:43:46. > :43:50.medallists. So... Three of these riders rode in 2012 when it was

:43:51. > :43:55.three riders. The additional rider was Dani King, who is not here, but

:43:56. > :44:00.two of these new to the Games. They are a team that has spent an immense

:44:01. > :44:07.amount of time together. Archibald drops into the back for Great

:44:08. > :44:19.Britain. And now half a second, the lead. Will we see Great Britain do

:44:20. > :44:25.just enough to get into the gold medal ride or will they and setback

:44:26. > :44:30.to the US team? They are gaining a significant lead over the Canadians.

:44:31. > :44:35.It is being driven by Laura Trott, the Olympic champion, driving hard

:44:36. > :44:40.on the front. She will do a long haul for Great Britain. She is an

:44:41. > :44:47.incredible rider, she is so, so small and has so much power but Alex

:44:48. > :44:53.exciting rider, everybody excited to see what she can do in the omnium.

:44:54. > :44:58.She is the driving force in the Britain Quartet. Now it is Elinor

:44:59. > :45:05.Barker, one of the new members of the squad for Great Britain. Canada

:45:06. > :45:11.try to limit their losses. 1.20 at the moment. Great Britain starting

:45:12. > :45:15.to apply the pressure. Canada is dropping down to three riders, their

:45:16. > :45:20.fourth rider is struggling on the back. The coach of the Great Britain

:45:21. > :45:24.team is indicating to his team that they are up on schedule, so he is

:45:25. > :45:28.happy with the time they are riding and as we said, it is a question of

:45:29. > :45:29.whether they are riding to get into gold medal contention or if they are

:45:30. > :45:44.going to get it... An is metres to go and the two

:45:45. > :45:55.seconds ahead. Katie Archibald swings onto the tail end. They are

:45:56. > :45:58.putting together a good rhyme. Britain are down to three. The

:45:59. > :46:04.British Kiltinney side of the track asking them for more. Joanna Rowsell

:46:05. > :46:11.Shand is the rider that has gone off. Now the coach indicates the

:46:12. > :46:20.other on schedule and happy with the ride. Let us see what time they will

:46:21. > :46:25.do. Great Britain have an sword at the bell. They are riding a quality

:46:26. > :46:33.right. Will it be good enough to break the world record? It is!. They

:46:34. > :46:36.have edged ahead. That looked to be superbly controlled from the great

:46:37. > :46:42.British team. An amazing ride. Everybody looked seriously under

:46:43. > :46:49.pressure. The coach was giving an indication they were on a good run.

:46:50. > :46:52.That is an amazing ride. Great Britain have any world-record in

:46:53. > :46:55.qualifying. The United States brokered in the previous race and

:46:56. > :47:01.the Great Britain have put their marker down. What a final in

:47:02. > :47:04.prospect with Great Britain against the United States for gold and

:47:05. > :47:08.Australia against Canada for the bronze medal.

:47:09. > :47:15.We can see so many British fans waving the union Jacks and the

:47:16. > :47:20.British team are delighted to see the world record go. The Americans

:47:21. > :47:24.threw down the court that and the British team picked it up and threw

:47:25. > :47:29.it back at them. Anything you can do, we can do better. That was a

:47:30. > :47:34.measure right. One second down after the first kilometre but they kept an

:47:35. > :47:37.even pace. For me, that was the perfect performance for the second

:47:38. > :47:42.round. They did not have to break the world record but they showed at

:47:43. > :47:46.the Americans, we're not at full gas yet but can still go faster than

:47:47. > :47:50.you. The British team kind of beautifully. We did not think they

:47:51. > :47:55.Red Hat world-record pace. It was only when we saw the court asking

:47:56. > :48:00.for more, we wondered, why is he asking for more? The world record

:48:01. > :48:05.was on but psychologically, to be the fastest team going into the

:48:06. > :48:08.final, to start in the home straight, all these little things

:48:09. > :48:13.can count. It will be a fantastic final, it'll be like the men's final

:48:14. > :48:18.against the Australians. It will be a nailbiter but that is what the

:48:19. > :48:23.crowd want. As long as the ladies can produce the goods, we do not

:48:24. > :48:26.care if they win by 1000th of a second. They will get a rub down and

:48:27. > :48:32.rest ahead of the final later tonight. Back to the athletics.

:48:33. > :48:41.We're going to catch up with the women's 400 metres heats.

:48:42. > :48:47.COMMENTATOR: The fifth heat and a first round of the women's 400

:48:48. > :48:50.metres and it is a difficult one for Emily Diamond, outside of Shaunae

:48:51. > :48:55.Miller, quickest and the world this year. And Morgan Mitchell from

:48:56. > :49:00.Australia. It'll be tough to get them to the top two automatic

:49:01. > :49:05.qualifiers but give yourself a chance and run close to your

:49:06. > :49:08.personal best. Anything around 52 seconds for Emily Diamond could give

:49:09. > :49:13.her a chance of going through as a fastest loser. She does not have to

:49:14. > :49:17.worry about Shaunae Miller, she already has the tall athlete from

:49:18. > :49:25.the Bahamas beside. Diamond must not panic. Morgan Mitchell has had

:49:26. > :49:29.similar times to Emily Diamond. Shaunae Miller is a long way clear,

:49:30. > :49:34.tall and elegant. She will have a great battle with Allyson Felix come

:49:35. > :49:39.time for the Gold Medal. She will go through automatically but it is a

:49:40. > :49:42.close race behind for the second automatic place. Emily Diamond and a

:49:43. > :49:49.good place, lying second coming off the bench. Emily Diamond beginning

:49:50. > :49:53.to struggle. Morgan Mitchell finishing strongly. It is against

:49:54. > :50:01.the clock. It is a victory for Shaunae Miller. 51.18 seconds. We

:50:02. > :50:05.will see how Emily Diamond has done. Shaunae Miller was a class above the

:50:06. > :50:14.others. It was a strong finish from Morgan Mitchell. The Australian,

:50:15. > :50:23.Emily Diamond, did everything she could. She did not have the final

:50:24. > :50:27.30-40 metres. Sitting down on the track, her work done for now. We

:50:28. > :50:33.will see if that time is quick enough to see her through. I think

:50:34. > :50:39.it might well be. Congratulations on a tremendous performance after the

:50:40. > :50:44.difficult 48 hours for you. I was in bed pretty much all day yesterday

:50:45. > :50:50.with food poisoning. The Team GB doctors have worked so hard to get

:50:51. > :50:53.me onto the start line today. I am just so grateful to them that I was

:50:54. > :50:59.able to make it to the start line run. When that happens, the worst

:51:00. > :51:07.timing imaginable, do you think you will not make it you today? When I

:51:08. > :51:12.started, I woke up at about 1am, horrendously selected. I was crying,

:51:13. > :51:16.thinking, why is this happening now? I have had such a good year. To come

:51:17. > :51:19.down with food poisoning one day before I compete in the Olympic

:51:20. > :51:25.Games, I could not believe it. I was devastated. I am glad I managed to

:51:26. > :51:30.make it out on the track today and run under 52 which was a bonus. It

:51:31. > :51:33.says a lot that you and your character because it virtue

:51:34. > :51:38.contention to make the next round. Will you have nothing new for the

:51:39. > :51:44.round gridlock people were asking if I would be able to run. There's no

:51:45. > :51:49.way I am not getting on a startling, even if I walk around. I am getting

:51:50. > :51:52.on that start line and competing. If I make it through tomorrow, I will

:51:53. > :52:00.come back and make -- tried to do the same. I hope you get 100% soon.

:52:01. > :52:05.Great effort. Thank you very much. COMMENTATOR: After the wretched

:52:06. > :52:08.season last year with injury, that is a decent run from Emily Diamond

:52:09. > :52:12.and gives it a good chance to get through as the third fastest loser.

:52:13. > :52:25.Shaunae Miller looking very strong and good finish for Morgan Mitchell,

:52:26. > :52:31.the Australian. In hit six, it was the athlete from Barry in the race.

:52:32. > :52:35.Sal Aida Nasa. The 18-year-old taking it online. The youngest

:52:36. > :52:42.competitor in the athletics in the world begins. And in second place

:52:43. > :52:51.was Libania Grenot from Italy. In hit seven, it was one of the

:52:52. > :52:57.strongest runners and the field, Shericka Jackson, who came through

:52:58. > :53:03.for a victory from the athlete from Zambia, Kabange Mupopo. Let us get

:53:04. > :53:09.into the final heat. After this we will know if Emily Diamond is one of

:53:10. > :53:15.the fastest. Over to Steve Cram. COMMENTATOR: Into the final heat.

:53:16. > :53:25.The bass athlete here in lean two is Christine Day. Fourth in the world

:53:26. > :53:31.Championships in Beijing. Her season 's best is not far off her personal

:53:32. > :53:37.best. Coutinho from Brazil will get a very big cheer in lane six. The

:53:38. > :53:41.top two will go through. Emily Diamond will be watching this

:53:42. > :53:45.anxiously. Unless six people go under hard time which I think it

:53:46. > :53:53.highly unlikely, then she will go through as a fastest loser. Carline

:53:54. > :54:02.Muir of Canada started quickly on the outside lane. Malgorzata Holub

:54:03. > :54:06.from Poland is going well. It is Christine Day round the top end. She

:54:07. > :54:14.looks to be in control and can afford to ease off in the home

:54:15. > :54:17.straight. Watching the Brazilian Coutinho finishing quickly. She is

:54:18. > :54:23.chasing a fastest loser spot. Christine Day is tying up. Carline

:54:24. > :54:30.Muir will get the second spot. And then Coutinho in third -- and forth.

:54:31. > :54:52.Malgorzata Holub was third. The winning time coming through is

:54:53. > :54:54.one that I can confirm, definitely, Emily Diamond will join Christine

:54:55. > :55:05.Ohuruogu in the semifinals as a fastest loser. Let us tidy up the

:55:06. > :55:09.entire qualification from those eight macro races. The top two went

:55:10. > :55:16.through, Phyllis Francis had a tough race against all Grammy Adekoya. Sal

:55:17. > :55:19.Aida Nasa was a surprise. Shaunae Miller is one of the favourites with

:55:20. > :55:26.Allyson Felix. Christine Ohuruogu looking pretty good. And then we get

:55:27. > :55:35.into the fastest loser spots. 51.43 seconds. Emily Diamond with 51.76

:55:36. > :55:45.seconds, she is confirmed as one of the fastest losers.

:55:46. > :55:51.Katarina Johnson-Thompson had a lifetime best first day yesterday.

:55:52. > :55:55.She is hopefully rested with the two of this heptathlon. She is in fourth

:55:56. > :56:04.place. The first event is the long jump. That is a decent jump for

:56:05. > :56:10.Katarina Johnson-Thompson. This is the event that went bad for her last

:56:11. > :56:16.year. She has a valid jump. This will bring confidence and optimism,

:56:17. > :56:18.and I am sure a sigh of relief for the tall Liverpudlian. This is an

:56:19. > :56:26.event where she can make some ground. Maybe even get back in

:56:27. > :56:32.contention. She is certainly in good shape for a medal, banning no other

:56:33. > :56:36.disasters. 6.51 metres in round one. That is good. It is not great and

:56:37. > :56:42.she is capable of better, two jumps remaining. This has been

:56:43. > :56:50.interesting. Christoph Harting is in fourth place. The desk is in perfect

:56:51. > :56:54.sunlight. The leaders with Piotr Malachowski of Poland. He is the

:56:55. > :56:58.younger brother of Robert Harting. He has produced a massive throw. He

:56:59. > :57:07.has gone beyond Piotr Malachowski, the world champion. It is not Robert

:57:08. > :57:10.Harting in front. It is his brother. The reigning Olympic champion --

:57:11. > :57:16.reigning Olympic champion did not make the final. We did not expect

:57:17. > :57:21.this. Christoph Harting, second on the world list, has produced

:57:22. > :57:27.something very special. That is in the last round of the discus and is

:57:28. > :57:32.close to 70 metres. Christoph Harting with the seasons best of

:57:33. > :57:38.68.37 metres. It is a lifetime best. He goes into the lead. What a time

:57:39. > :57:43.to produce the best tool of your life. We are going to build up to a

:57:44. > :57:48.fantastic battle in the heptathlon today and it could be a head-to-head

:57:49. > :57:50.in the long jump between Jessica Ennis-Hill and Katarina

:57:51. > :58:00.Johnson-Thompson. We will see you soon on BBC One.

:58:01. > :58:06.Every year that you do, it is all to what the Olympics. As a young

:58:07. > :58:10.athlete, everybody wanted to be an Olympic champ. If you can get it

:58:11. > :58:14.right, it is the most amazing and rewarding moment of your life. The

:58:15. > :58:22.pride of Sheffield and Great Britain, Jessica Ennis is the

:58:23. > :58:32.Olympic champion. I knew that is what I wanted to do. That was after

:58:33. > :58:34.Jessica one. Catalina is -- Thomson Johnston -- Katarina

:58:35. > :58:38.Johnson-Thompson Hassan three files, it is the end of Championships. When

:58:39. > :58:46.it happened, it changed me. I definitely underestimated how hard

:58:47. > :58:50.it would be to come back after having your first Child. Jessica

:58:51. > :59:02.Ennis-Hill is back on top of the world. My target is pink gold. -- is

:59:03. > :59:06.owned big gold. This is my last Olympics and I will give it

:59:07. > :59:10.everything. I think I am capable of doing it. I would love to defend my

:59:11. > :59:17.title and it is to see what the future holds.

:59:18. > :59:23.We cannot wait for that final. Katarina Johnson-Thompson against

:59:24. > :59:28.Jessica Ennis-Hill. We will see the continuation of the heptathlon this

:59:29. > :59:37.evening on the BBC. Let us see how you are watching Super Saturday.

:59:38. > :59:42.Lots of people looking forward to seeing Usain Bolt. Incredible he is

:59:43. > :59:47.going for the triple trouble. It all starts this evening when he gets

:59:48. > :59:53.involved in the 100 metres heats. Everybody wants to get their hands

:59:54. > :59:58.on Usain Bolt. That was the wrong picture. That trivialises the event.

:59:59. > :59:59.There you go, Usain Bolt, he has taken over this town.

:00:00. > :00:13.200m race, you and me, who wins that? Before you tell me who wins

:00:14. > :00:15.that, what is the
