:00:00. > :00:00.On the other hand, he might have been so shattered that he stopped

:00:00. > :00:16.sleeping! That was a good, deep serve. Murray

:00:17. > :00:46.was after it. That's what he did on the set point,

:00:47. > :00:49.that kind of forehand return. He could do with another one right now.

:00:50. > :01:36.Break back point for Murray. BOOING

:01:37. > :01:48.What is this? Is it a time violation again?

:01:49. > :01:55.No harm done. Maybe a lack of communication.

:01:56. > :02:01.We couldn't see what the problem was. Maybe you picked something up

:02:02. > :02:33.at home, but it is so noisy here. The miss timed forehand from Murray

:02:34. > :02:39.brought Del Potro in, but didn't Murray squeeze them? Yes, Del Potro

:02:40. > :02:42.unable to stabilise the wrist and make the volley. Look at this, he

:02:43. > :03:40.gets down and secures it, well done. Oh, gorgeous! A mouthwatering shop

:03:41. > :03:51.to break back there from Andy Murray. Such fine hand skills.

:03:52. > :03:58.Look at this, just perfectly weighted, it was carving underneath

:03:59. > :04:05.the ball, beautiful to watch. And he has broken Del Potro three times in

:04:06. > :04:11.a row. Quite something. When you think that Del Potro is serving

:04:12. > :04:38.still at 74% of first serves in. Huge effort from Murray.

:04:39. > :05:03.Sorry for the lip readers amongst you! Four doubles now.

:05:04. > :05:14.Well, he did it in the game prior, didn't he? Not so now, but he still

:05:15. > :05:24.finds himself 0-30 down. Looking tired, but he still seems as

:05:25. > :05:36.if he has got plenty left. How much longer?

:05:37. > :05:51.If he can break here, he will be given a big lift.

:05:52. > :06:25.He has got it! It's landed on the line. Del Potro can't believe it, he

:06:26. > :06:29.looks across but he knows it was in. And he is a very fair man, Del

:06:30. > :06:33.Potro, just acknowledging that nicely. It was a beautiful height

:06:34. > :07:00.and weight from Andy Murray, landed plum on the line.

:07:01. > :07:16.Just when he's trying to close the door on the Argentinian, he offers

:07:17. > :08:01.him another lifeline. Well, it wasn't cleanly hit from Del

:08:02. > :08:05.Potro, and Murray actually had a more difficult task, to dig that one

:08:06. > :08:11.up, then he might have. But let's give him credit. Del Potro gets the

:08:12. > :08:16.break, three successive breaks, he leads to- one.

:08:17. > :08:25.STUDIO: So, we are staying with this match. Andy Murray looking to defend

:08:26. > :08:29.the title he won in London 2012, but that is the scene at the athletics

:08:30. > :08:36.stadium, because it is such a big night. Usain Bolt aiming for the

:08:37. > :08:46.trouble trouble here in Rio, following a double treble success in

:08:47. > :08:56.London. Tonight the eyes of the world will be watching to see if he

:08:57. > :09:05.can deliver again. -- treble treble. The 100 metres, the big one. It has

:09:06. > :09:12.got its own distinct rhythm. Before the start, measured, composed,

:09:13. > :09:15.ready, set, and then bang. That overwhelming tension is broken in an

:09:16. > :09:21.explosion of action. Blink and you'll miss it. Don't miss it.

:09:22. > :09:32.To 20 5am, set your alarm, stay with us. His main rival for gold is

:09:33. > :09:34.Justin Gatlin, some casting him as track and field's archvillain,

:09:35. > :09:43.having served two doping suspensions. He will be lining up,

:09:44. > :09:48.and one thing is for certain, they will have their work cut out. Back

:09:49. > :09:53.to the gold medal match, Andy Murray taking on Juan Martin Del Potro for

:09:54. > :09:57.the gold medal. COMMENTATOR: Who is going to hold

:09:58. > :10:48.serve first in this set? No one has yet.

:10:49. > :10:56.Yes, the change of the point of attack worked a treat. We appreciate

:10:57. > :11:04.it is gone midnight at home, coming up to quarter past 12. Well done for

:11:05. > :11:05.staying with us. Those of you working tomorrow, hope you've got an

:11:06. > :11:43.understanding boss! It has been a familiar pattern in

:11:44. > :11:48.this set, the 0-30. Now, can Del Potro wriggle out of jail? They are

:11:49. > :12:32.both terrific servers, they just haven't been in this set.

:12:33. > :12:45.And exhausting rally for Del Potro. And he is struggling now. He is

:12:46. > :12:49.rubbing his left by like it just might be beginning to cramp up.

:12:50. > :12:55.There is a lot of grimacing going down, and doubling over. Murray

:12:56. > :13:01.looking right down the court at him, and saw all of that, and that will

:13:02. > :13:21.be like manner from heaven. Three break back points.

:13:22. > :13:28.To the credit of Andy Murray, he gets the forehand through the court

:13:29. > :13:59.a lot faster over the last 18 months or so, that was a positive miss.

:14:00. > :14:05.The torture is increasing on Del Potro. Murray breaks but it was not

:14:06. > :14:12.just the break, it was that kind of body language. Murray is using the

:14:13. > :14:15.slice effectively, the ball staying low and Del Potro hating getting

:14:16. > :14:35.down low and it all became too much. Well, he looks close to exhaustion,

:14:36. > :15:23.he is difficult to read but when he was massaging his leg, that told us.

:15:24. > :15:31.Their hammer blows are not having the same effect at the moment and he

:15:32. > :15:36.is extended slightly out of his comfort zone, he is struggling and

:15:37. > :15:38.buckling physically. Losing control of that end range volley, earlier on

:15:39. > :16:25.he would have made that. A much-needed rally from Del Potro,

:16:26. > :16:31.but it took a lot out of him. That right arm is working pretty well. He

:16:32. > :16:36.keeps an ever menacing presence in the set, there is a nonchalance

:16:37. > :17:12.about it but he's still presses for a winner.

:17:13. > :17:16.They have been flowing thick and fast, the errors, from the man in

:17:17. > :17:33.the light blue shirt. Murray moves in front in this fourth

:17:34. > :17:49.set for the first time. Murray is a keen boxing fan and in

:17:50. > :17:58.the boxing parlance, this is like a fighter going into the tenth or 11th

:17:59. > :18:04.round and he has taken most of the blows and sees his opponent welding.

:18:05. > :18:14.It seems that way now, we will see, he leads 3-2. Can he land a knockout

:18:15. > :18:19.blow on Del Potro. You're watching the men's singles gold medal match.

:18:20. > :18:28.Andy Murray looking to defend the title that he won in 2016. Very hot

:18:29. > :18:33.day here in Rio and you can see what it is doing to Juan Martin Del Potro

:18:34. > :18:36.who has been terrific in this competition. Straight after this

:18:37. > :18:41.gold medal match, he is loving it, we will be crossing live to the

:18:42. > :18:47.Olympic Stadium because it is a massive night, 2:25 a.m., 100 metre

:18:48. > :18:54.final, Usain Bolt versus Justin Gatlin and on BBC Four, if you want

:18:55. > :18:58.the build-up, look at that scene, beautiful stadium, cross to BBC for

:18:59. > :19:03.now if you want to hear from Gabby Logan and Michael Johnson and the

:19:04. > :19:09.team. Here on BBC One, we are staying with his gold medal match.

:19:10. > :19:16.Let us rejoin our commentators. How much has he got left? He had the

:19:17. > :19:21.physio on rubbing his leg, he is not allowed to have a time-out for cramp

:19:22. > :19:23.but he is allowed to have the physio one in a normal change of ends. He

:19:24. > :19:49.was rubbing his legs furiously. 2-3. You wonder what else the physio gave

:19:50. > :20:31.him! An injection of energy from Del Potro.

:20:32. > :20:39.Still given the short ball, and invariably good night, but he is

:20:40. > :21:34.getting less and less short balls. Mesmerising when he plays like this.

:21:35. > :21:46.Murray challenging him, that is a huge game for Del Potro. A love

:21:47. > :21:56.service game, it is three all and the crowd again getting animated.

:21:57. > :22:03.Thunderous simplicity. He is trying to dance on his feet, Del Potro, as

:22:04. > :22:51.the crowd get even more animated. Hears in one of those lights out

:22:52. > :22:57.unplayable phases right now. -- he is in. They sensed they can help

:22:58. > :23:36.carry him home here. Well, it was interesting that point,

:23:37. > :23:47.Murray played it well but Del Potro was surprisingly quick. He was.

:23:48. > :23:56.Still got some fuel in the tank. Murray Carvin around the outside of

:23:57. > :24:16.bowel and beautifully -- carving around the outside of the angle.

:24:17. > :24:27.Murray is challenging. I think he suspects that it was out. He has

:24:28. > :24:33.already lost one challenge. There is a second gone. He has got one

:24:34. > :24:40.challenge left for the rest of this set. He will be feeling a little but

:24:41. > :25:21.more vulnerable. -- a little bit. Down the line looked the better

:25:22. > :25:32.option, but not to be. Two break points for Del Potro.

:25:33. > :26:10.The atmosphere has become raucous again. Trying to lift their man.

:26:11. > :26:14.The lob nowhere near good enough and out of nowhere, Del Potro breaks

:26:15. > :26:34.once more. He is an enigma, Murray. When you

:26:35. > :26:40.least expect it, and that is part of the problem, when he least expects

:26:41. > :26:46.it, suddenly, sometimes it goes addressed and that is how it seemed

:26:47. > :26:52.there. Full credit to Del Potro, he was smacking it, but Murray was not

:26:53. > :26:56.having it. The untimely double fault makes you wonder about where his

:26:57. > :27:03.mind was that. Simultaneously coupled with the fact that Del Potro

:27:04. > :27:07.made some good ball there and another break of serve on Murray and

:27:08. > :27:17.it is frustrating for British fans because he has looked in control and

:27:18. > :27:21.suddenly relinquishes that grip. We had that analogy about petrol and it

:27:22. > :27:24.seems he is running out of petrol and if you looked at the petrol

:27:25. > :27:28.gauge, it would not have looked pretty, but that gives him more

:27:29. > :27:36.fuel, what happened in that last game. A little pit stop for him,

:27:37. > :27:38.favourably. It has certainly buoyed, concern for those men, in the Murray

:27:39. > :27:53.camp. It was a huge effort for Del Potro.

:27:54. > :28:00.Whether or not he wins or loses this, because it was a titanic

:28:01. > :28:11.effort yesterday, full of emotion. Dad, what have you done to me? We

:28:12. > :28:22.have seen some great wigs and masks! Del Potro them, 4-3. Every time he

:28:23. > :29:01.has broken in the set, Murray has broken straight back. -- this set.

:29:02. > :29:10.Sure enough, he is on his case a game. The tactic that has become

:29:11. > :29:15.prevalent for Murray is the drop shot but also the heavy Bush lies,

:29:16. > :29:29.staying very low to Del Potro, does not want to bend his knees.

:29:30. > :29:37.Great return, maybe earlier in the match, Del Potro would have gotten

:29:38. > :29:40.that. He was a step slow, did not quite get his legs behind that. Snap

:29:41. > :30:11.of the wrist too strong. He has served so well tonight, Del

:30:12. > :30:14.Potro. 73% first serves in. Andy Murray only 50%. It has kept him

:30:15. > :30:46.afloat or certainly helped him. At this juncture, that is not the

:30:47. > :30:50.shot you would expect from Murray. They are normally a bit more

:30:51. > :31:03.conservative in nature and a steadier type of choice.

:31:04. > :31:07.CHEERING Well, he picked to serve! He

:31:08. > :31:38.couldn't make it happen. No!

:31:39. > :31:50.CHEERING Superb from Del Potro. What a lion

:31:51. > :31:55.heart he is. Murray will have to serve now to stay in the set. Yeah,

:31:56. > :32:00.you would have to take your hat off to Del Potro's fighting spirit. It

:32:01. > :32:03.has been so commendable. He's shown such attitude and application and

:32:04. > :32:17.she's been physically up against the wall. -- he's been physically up

:32:18. > :32:24.against the wall. Certainly there are Argentines everywhere.

:32:25. > :32:55.UMPIRE: Thank you. Quiet, please. Thank you.

:32:56. > :33:08.Yep! Terrific injection of pace there from Murray.

:33:09. > :33:12.He is desperate to ask to serve it out question of Del Potro and hold

:33:13. > :33:43.onto his own serve here prior. Again, a stop slow. We are losing it

:33:44. > :33:47.more and more, but still anything within range, he is playing

:33:48. > :33:51.remarkably well. I think he would be foolish to step off the pedal as

:33:52. > :34:09.regards going after the forehand because it has served him so well.

:34:10. > :34:14.That shot has normally been a gimmefor Murray, but not totally

:34:15. > :34:48.this evening. That drifted way out. Murray holds

:34:49. > :34:58.and Del Potro will have to serve out for this fourth set. Getting a few

:34:59. > :35:05.tweets in saying, "Hurry up, Murray. I want to go to bed." Believe me, it

:35:06. > :35:10.is not for want of trying. You can understand. It is very late back

:35:11. > :35:16.home. What a great side it is. A privilege to be here. -- what a

:35:17. > :35:22.great site it is. It is a privilege to be here. Very rarely in matches

:35:23. > :35:27.that are not Davis Cup do you get an atmosphere like this. Yes, they have

:35:28. > :35:39.been so vocal throughout, haven't they? Any opportunity just jumping

:35:40. > :35:44.around. Fun. It doesn't seem alcohol-fuelled either, does it? No.

:35:45. > :35:46.Just fun-loving, really encouraging their man on and enjoying the whole

:35:47. > :36:00.atmosphere. Murray is probably thinking about

:36:01. > :36:02.the next point, the first point off the Del Potro serve that he wants to

:36:03. > :36:33.get his teeth into. So after three hours and 25 minutes

:36:34. > :37:07.Del Potro serves to take us into a deciding set.

:37:08. > :37:18.A great defence from Murray! And how often you heard Andy Murray's

:37:19. > :37:22.racquet clattering on the floor, almost as a stabiliser to regain his

:37:23. > :37:29.balance in the point. But it served him well.

:37:30. > :38:06.UMPIRE: Thank you. Thank you. Quiet please. Thank you.

:38:07. > :38:15.That looked tired. I may have been looking too closely at it, but it

:38:16. > :38:19.was a very tired shot. It was a lazy address to the ball, wasn't it? Far

:38:20. > :39:11.the too relaxed. So the pressure quadrupled now.

:39:12. > :39:23.Oh, well played! CHEERING

:39:24. > :39:29.Yes, it was the sledgehammer forehand approach that came to his

:39:30. > :39:33.rescue. Great timing over head. A couple of those lobs went up so high

:39:34. > :39:34.they needed Air Traffic Control from Murray. They are always tough to

:39:35. > :39:58.take out of the air. That is where he is scoring now.

:39:59. > :40:03.CHEERING Pinning him on the backhand side and

:40:04. > :40:06.then playing down the forehand. That was supreme from Murray. Two

:40:07. > :40:33.breakback points. Oh, so good from Del Potro!

:40:34. > :40:38.CHEERING The serve was crunched in at 200kph.

:40:39. > :41:09.Just a giant strike to his right. CHEERING

:41:10. > :43:06.Oh! Unreal! Take a bow, both of you. Del Potro was hanging onto the net

:43:07. > :43:07.as if it was supporting him. Robust Andy Murray all the hard yards run

:43:08. > :44:21.serving him well. Again, it was amazing that Del Potro

:44:22. > :44:25.got to that drop shot, but Murray stayed composed and just having the

:44:26. > :44:29.foresight to move forward on that was just brilliant for Murray. It

:44:30. > :44:35.was an exquisitely waited drop shot but Del Potro will be saying, "How

:44:36. > :44:57.did he get that?" Murray backing up well, though. He closed the door.

:44:58. > :45:42.There is the break back. CHEERING

:45:43. > :46:01.Well, it has been drama to the full, unfolding incredibly.

:46:02. > :46:06.Murray had to work so hard for the break and now he's got it. Is he in

:46:07. > :46:38.the home straight? CHEERING

:46:39. > :46:45.Oh, it's still there! Everyone at home would have winced. It just went

:46:46. > :46:48.off like a gun. Wow! Great to see him smile, too. What an engaging

:46:49. > :47:23.character he is, Del Potro. CHEERING

:47:24. > :48:18.There we go again. I thought it was long. Murray should

:48:19. > :48:24.challenge here. It is interesting, if he misses this, he is out of

:48:25. > :48:34.challenges. It is a long way down, but - it is in. So Murray is out of

:48:35. > :48:37.challenges. Until and if we go for a tie break where he gets one more,

:48:38. > :48:47.but right now he's got to rely on the officials. A credit to pass

:48:48. > :48:54.Queensland Maria then for intervening. -- Pasquel Maria then

:48:55. > :49:18.for intervening. Murray stealing in. The brain is

:49:19. > :50:02.still working. Woah! Wondrous. It looked a fair

:50:03. > :50:06.decision for Murray to come in on that. A split-second later, it

:50:07. > :50:14.didn't. Two break points. Two more break points. For the Argentine. It

:50:15. > :50:19.was a wonderful approach from Andy Murray. He actually hit it very,

:50:20. > :50:20.very well, reasonable depth. Terrific, inspired range from Del

:50:21. > :51:35.Potro. Ha!

:51:36. > :51:36.CHEERING His ninth ace. None were as

:51:37. > :52:04.important as that one. CHEERING

:52:05. > :52:14.Suddenly the rabbit becomes a wand. LAUGHS

:52:15. > :52:16.. Yes. Well said. -- Suddenly the racquet becomes a wand.

:52:17. > :52:27.LAUGHS Yes, well said.

:52:28. > :53:26.CHEERING What a huge hold.

:53:27. > :53:38.He is a game away from the gold medal. I understand in Andy's home

:53:39. > :53:44.he's got this stair machine. You know the ones that just go on and on

:53:45. > :53:49.up the stairs and he drives himself to these almost -- he drives himself

:53:50. > :53:52.until he is almost ill. He is almost falling off it. It is for moments

:53:53. > :54:11.like this that he does that. Absolutely stairway to heaven.

:54:12. > :54:48.Over on BBC Four the athletics is starting. It should be a momentous

:54:49. > :54:56.night. I think in about an hour and 25 minutes Usain Bolt will be going.

:54:57. > :55:04.So a fantastic night of athletics coming up. But, he will stay right

:55:05. > :55:06.here with this gold medal match and Andy Murray is a game away from his

:55:07. > :55:16.second Olympic title. Relentless power. It is still there.

:55:17. > :56:56.It is just incessant, isn't it? Oh, he got away with it. Didn't do

:56:57. > :57:05.quite enough, really, with the overhead. Always strikes me as quite

:57:06. > :57:11.remarkable how this man can live at this tempo when he is quite tired as

:57:12. > :57:28.well. It is a high-octane match. Still crushing big shots.

:57:29. > :57:35.Murray is furious with himself. He is shaking his head because he was

:57:36. > :57:52.onto his serve. He really fancied that return.

:57:53. > :58:44.CHEERING Oh! Well, he is claiming someone in

:58:45. > :58:48.the crowd put him off. A lot of booing. Some for the person who

:58:49. > :59:22.might have done that and some for Murray's reaction.

:59:23. > :59:27.Wouldn't Murray love to finish it right here, rather than having to go

:59:28. > :59:50.through the torture of the tie break?

:59:51. > :00:00.It's getting very noisy. And security is being called.

:00:01. > :00:06.I think that someone's been asked to leave. One of Argentine supporters.

:00:07. > :00:19.This guy. Are they booing because he's a hero

:00:20. > :01:02.or because he's a villain? Well, he's happy he made an impact.

:01:03. > :01:44.After 4 hours exactly it's the gold medal point for Murray.

:01:45. > :02:27.It was on, his racket. That was as tension-riddled forehand return.

:02:28. > :03:29.CHEERING Andy Murray is a double Olympic gold

:03:30. > :04:01.medallist. They have already achieved so much.

:04:02. > :04:02.But they'll have a special bond after what's happened in the last

:04:03. > :04:32.four hours. You have to feel for Del Potro.

:04:33. > :04:38.Could a man have given any more? It's almost the same as 4 years ago

:04:39. > :04:51.in the semifinal against Federer. What can you say to him? It's been a

:04:52. > :04:58.fantastic evening. Words can barely contextualise what is happening over

:04:59. > :05:05.here. It's overwhelmingly emotional, but another landmark moment in the

:05:06. > :05:12.career of both, frankly. And now, both Argentines and Brazilians, the

:05:13. > :05:22.honourable rar Brits joining in unison.

:05:23. > :05:30.He could not have given more. I'm amazed he last at the level he was

:05:31. > :05:39.going for. As long as he did. And now it's beginning to sink in. Tears

:05:40. > :05:45.of joy last night. But after last night, 3 and a quarter hours against

:05:46. > :05:50.Nadal, the tennis of the unbelievable standard, to produce

:05:51. > :05:56.what he did here, is mind-boggling. Having gone through the trenches,

:05:57. > :05:59.all the years with the wrist issues, the multiple surgeries, and that

:06:00. > :06:04.gives him time to think about himself and what he wants to do and

:06:05. > :06:11.just to be out here, he feels blessed. It means so much to him,

:06:12. > :06:24.and for Andy... Murray comes over to a little band of English supporters

:06:25. > :06:28.that he noticed earlier on. And he's going to do an interview for the

:06:29. > :06:33.host broadcaster. We'll be talking to Andy later on, that's for sure.

:06:34. > :06:58.Off goes Del Potro. A true gladiator. Even the

:06:59. > :07:00.Brazilians are waving him goodbye. He played arguably better than when

:07:01. > :07:15.he was fourth in the world. We are going to stay with the tennis

:07:16. > :07:21.here, leading up to the medal ceremony. Is may be a few minutes'

:07:22. > :07:23.time, but over on BBC four, Usain Bolt is going in the semifinal right

:07:24. > :07:37.now. Forged 9 breaks of the Del Potro

:07:38. > :07:43.serve, remarkably. And it was crunched down at 200kph, quite

:07:44. > :07:47.often. A really watchable contest. Winners to unforced errors, Murray

:07:48. > :07:54.really tempering that ratio so well. And I think that people just feel

:07:55. > :08:00.spent after such an emotional roller coaster. I'm sure you do at home

:08:01. > :08:07.too. You stayed up, it's 10 past 1. You deserve a medal. I hope you feel

:08:08. > :08:12.it's worth it. I have to say, they take a little bit of time getting

:08:13. > :08:20.the medal ceremonies together. You need to wait a bit longer, but it

:08:21. > :08:23.will be great to see Andy on top of the podium, crowned as gold

:08:24. > :08:29.medallist for the second time. It's interesting, his attitude towards it

:08:30. > :08:34.all. 4 years ago, he won in London. And he said, I don't file like I'm

:08:35. > :08:37.defending anything here, I'm just going for another gold medal. He's

:08:38. > :08:44.got it now. Some of the images from the match.

:08:45. > :08:55.And whenever he came to the net, he had great success, all night,

:08:56. > :08:59.really. Winning 71% of those points. Returning so well to engineer 9

:09:00. > :09:06.breaks of the big serve of Del Potro. But that was quite

:09:07. > :09:12.insightful, that shot there. The beads of sweat flying off of his

:09:13. > :09:19.wristband. Testament to the work that he put in throughout the night.

:09:20. > :09:25.They talk about an Olympic cycle in swimming, and athletics, all the big

:09:26. > :09:28.Olympic sports. Tennis is getting stronger and stronger in stature, as

:09:29. > :09:39.far as the Olympics is concerned. But the four year cycle for Murray

:09:40. > :09:46.began in London, and it was lift-off after that. And then Wimbledon next

:09:47. > :09:51.year, not going to sigh the Olympics are going to finish it off, but he's

:09:52. > :09:56.probably the favourite going into New York, because of Novak

:09:57. > :10:02.Djokovic's maybe only temporary demise? It's been some cycle the

:10:03. > :10:15.last 4 years. It really has. Gorgeous scenes, watching Murray.

:10:16. > :10:22.From that sort of slightly embryotic form and then it came together for

:10:23. > :10:27.him. There was the odd blip, at the beginning of sets, and he lost a

:10:28. > :10:33.little bit of concentration. But every time he dropped his guard, he

:10:34. > :10:40.came back. It's different over the course of 4 sets to sustain through

:10:41. > :10:50.the entirety of that, some top level tennis. It was very high level

:10:51. > :10:55.throughout. Well, we have had quite, the most extraordinary event. And

:10:56. > :11:00.it's meant a heck of a lot to the gladiators of the sport, to Novak

:11:01. > :11:06.Djokovic, who went out in the opening round, to Del Potro, to

:11:07. > :11:13.Rafa, who Del Potro beat yesterday. Del Potro himself, and you saw

:11:14. > :11:18.Murray in tears. A lot of athletes talk so much, the Olympic medals

:11:19. > :11:22.mean more to him. And Djokovic, tearful after his loss to Del Potro

:11:23. > :11:27.in the opening round. You could see what it meant to him. We talked

:11:28. > :11:33.about the tears earlier on, didn't we? Tennis now seems, well it seems

:11:34. > :11:38.the lid has come off now, and if you win a big match, you're allowed to

:11:39. > :11:45.cry. Is started with Roger, didn't it? Then was Andy. Then we had

:11:46. > :11:50.Djokovic crying, Del Potro crying. We had macho tennis but not macho

:11:51. > :11:55.response, right? Interestingly as well, I wonder if they are still

:11:56. > :12:01.trying to catch the flight tonight. It won't 9 o'clock, that's for sure.

:12:02. > :12:11.As we said, I don't think that Andy has his own jet, but a share of one.

:12:12. > :12:14.So the pilot will wait. A few going, but a lot staying to see the

:12:15. > :12:27.coronation of Andy Murray. I myself wondered when Andy got

:12:28. > :12:31.married and had the child, and I just wondered if the intensity would

:12:32. > :12:38.still burn as fiercely as it has done. Well, I need not have worried.

:12:39. > :12:44.Those sleepless nights with the young one. You know, the competitive

:12:45. > :12:51.fever still burning strong in the pit of his stomach. You can see it

:12:52. > :12:56.in his eyes, the way he conducts his business on the court, ever

:12:57. > :13:02.tenacious. Even when he relinquishes on his own serve, he fighting back

:13:03. > :13:10.constantly. He really is a believer now. He is knocking on the door of

:13:11. > :13:18.number one, quite shortly, really. Djokovic suddenly looking that

:13:19. > :13:24.little bit more fragile now. And his CV looks so impressive. Double

:13:25. > :13:28.Olympic champion, double Wimbledon champion, US Open champion, Davis

:13:29. > :13:35.Cup champion. Twice BBC sports personality of the year! Surely, he

:13:36. > :13:38.has to be favourite this year. And runner-up in all the other Slams as

:13:39. > :13:49.well. He's done it all. Quite something. 18 successive wins he's

:13:50. > :13:54.had, but none of them more important than that. Andy Murray, double

:13:55. > :13:58.Olympic champion. Paufl and Simon, thank you very much indeed. What a

:13:59. > :14:04.day this is turning out to be for Great Britain. You have to say, Juan

:14:05. > :14:09.Martin del Potro, has had a fantastic Olympics. Bronze medallist

:14:10. > :14:18.in London, and now a silver medal. Well done, Andy Murray. I'm bet

:14:19. > :14:20.you're glad you stayed up. We have the 100m final, company coming up

:14:21. > :14:27.right now. A very good evening the Gabi Logan. Not the final quite yet.

:14:28. > :14:33.We still have one more semifinal to go.

:14:34. > :14:38.You will see the first 2 heats that did feature Usain Bolt, amongst

:14:39. > :14:43.others, in just a moment. And yes, Bolt safely through.

:14:44. > :14:47.Sensationally through with his almost his quickest ever semifinal.

:14:48. > :14:53.So what response will we see from Justin Gatlin? One non-starter.

:14:54. > :14:56.Daniel Bailey is not there. We do have James Dasaolu going for Great

:14:57. > :15:02.Britain, right on the far side in lane 2. The first 2 through to the

:15:03. > :15:05.semifinal, sorry, to the spinal, of course, later tonight, and 2 of the

:15:06. > :15:16.fastest losers. Watch out for Yohan Blake, Kemarley

:15:17. > :15:33.Brown. Gatlin in six. Gatlin gets a powerful start.

:15:34. > :15:41.Dasaolu away well. As is Su of China many only the top 2 to go through.

:15:42. > :15:47.It's 9.95. Not as quick as Bolt but it's pretty good. Away he goes. He's

:15:48. > :15:54.not going to hang around. Get ready for the final. Gatlin versus Bolt.

:15:55. > :15:59.It's all bubbling up very, very nicely. That was actually the slower

:16:00. > :16:05.of the 3 semi-finals. And I don't know whether we can read too much

:16:06. > :16:11.into that. Dasaolu got out pretty quick, really couldn't maintain

:16:12. > :16:16.through there. Gatlin, with a 9.94. He's been talking about keeping

:16:17. > :16:23.things simple all year. He is very methodical with in the way he runs.

:16:24. > :16:27.He is so accurate with every strike. I mention this about Justin Gatlin.

:16:28. > :16:35.He is nearly flawless. He's so powerful. Every time he strikes the

:16:36. > :16:42.floor, pushes him forward. That's why you have got so much power. 994,

:16:43. > :16:49.it looks pretty comfortable. He needed to find 2 more metres if he

:16:50. > :16:55.truly wants to challenge later on. Yeah, you know, the semis can always

:16:56. > :17:00.be a great indicator, but you think last year, Gatlin looked great in

:17:01. > :17:05.the semi, Bolt looked not so good, but this time almost the other way

:17:06. > :17:10.around. Bolt looks so good. And Gatlin isn't flat out here. He backs

:17:11. > :17:17.off from this point down. He is also looking at the clock. Dasaolu ran

:17:18. > :17:25.10.16. So no British sprinters in the final. But Gatlin is there, so

:17:26. > :17:37.is Bolt, so is Yohan Blake. Tidy all of that up. 9.94, the winning time.

:17:38. > :17:44.Both of the 2 qualifiers by rights went under 10 seconds but not this

:17:45. > :17:49.time. I can tell you that in terms of fastest losers, it will mean that

:17:50. > :17:53.Trayvon Bromell and Karabo Sibanda will just edge Chijindu Ujah. They

:17:54. > :17:59.are going to edge him as a fastest loser. A really shame. He was the

:18:00. > :18:05.future. He was the person we were looking to. A bit of a shame for

:18:06. > :18:11.him. You know what? It will make him hungry. I had a look at Robbie,

:18:12. > :18:17.getting ready for his first attempt in the high jump. The qualification

:18:18. > :18:33.is under way. Chris Baker joins him. 12 to go through to the finals.

:18:34. > :18:47.We'll see him jump in just a moment. Reds take you back 2 of the

:18:48. > :18:48.semi-finals, featuring Usain Bolt. Oh, it's a false start. Andrew

:18:49. > :18:59.Fisher is gone. Even with the ten metres start, Bolt

:19:00. > :19:07.may have hunted him down. But he niece. We know. Yeah, this is very

:19:08. > :19:13.clear for everyone to see. Fisher, well before the gun. As you

:19:14. > :19:16.mentioned, he wants to fill his ambition and be great. But

:19:17. > :19:31.unfortunately, he'll be out of his race, I believe.

:19:32. > :19:40.Clearly away this time. Not a bad start from Usain Bolt. Already

:19:41. > :19:50.beginning to move away from Chijindu Ujah. And 9.84. 9.84 and an easy

:19:51. > :19:56.night for Usain Bolt. I think it's going to be quick, very quick. In

:19:57. > :20:04.the final. And Usain Bolt will be there. What makes you think he'll be

:20:05. > :20:10.quick, Andrew? No idea! A real majestic performance. We knew he was

:20:11. > :20:13.going to work hard for 30 or 40m, the talent in the field alongside

:20:14. > :20:22.him can produce that winning time themselves. So he had to get out

:20:23. > :20:27.very well indeed, and work hard. But once he unleashes that massive

:20:28. > :20:31.strike, not only long, it's fast. Then he just pulls the gap so

:20:32. > :20:35.easily. And once that happens, you can see right now, boom! He moves

:20:36. > :20:43.away and he starts to look around. Shut down, and look at the clock,

:20:44. > :20:50.9.86. We can look forward to something really sensational. He'll

:20:51. > :20:56.go back into the warm room, have a quick chat with his coach. They'll

:20:57. > :21:03.discuss what they think he needs to improve now. Glen will tell him to

:21:04. > :21:12.keep his eyes forward and for forward. What a great run for

:21:13. > :21:18.Chijindu Ujah as well. Usain Bolt was rounded up to 9.86. In terms of

:21:19. > :21:26.semi-finals, that is as quick as he has ever run in a semifinal. In

:21:27. > :21:32.Beijing, the raun 9.85. A very even start. Ashmeade got out well. Just

:21:33. > :21:37.leading this at the moment. Finishing very, very quickly. But

:21:38. > :21:42.Jimmy hangs on for the win. That is better. He only came through as a

:21:43. > :21:48.fastest loser, the Frenchman. Very tight for second. Not going to call

:21:49. > :21:53.that. Very close on the line. Ashmeade is looking anxiously.

:21:54. > :22:00.Lemaitre is there as well. Ashmeade got the better start. Got that half

:22:01. > :22:05.a yard, Colin, and then stayed strong. He didn't look good at all

:22:06. > :22:12.in the heats yesterday. Much much better here. He switched himself on

:22:13. > :22:19.for this race guaranteed in the top 2 positions. This is where he can

:22:20. > :22:24.really shine. It was an even field. He did what was necessary. He got

:22:25. > :22:28.out of the blocks well. The help was gained by Ashmeade getting out

:22:29. > :22:37.strongly. And Jimmy just tapped in on him. A very strong finisher. Good

:22:38. > :22:44.frequency on the floor. Held his form to the line. A great

:22:45. > :22:51.performance. Brilliant performance. Well, that the men's race. You join

:22:52. > :22:51.us just as the medal ceremony is taking place for Elaine Thompson's

:22:52. > :23:52.gold. Congratulations to Elaine Thompson,

:23:53. > :23:57.Tori Bowie of the United States, and of course, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce,

:23:58. > :24:06.still looking for that elusive woman who can win 3 consecutive gold

:24:07. > :24:09.medals at the Olympics. We have seen de-Barba not do it. We Shelly-Ann

:24:10. > :24:17.Fraser-Pryce didn't manage it either. Here is a man who can take 3

:24:18. > :24:21.consecutive 100m gold medals. He'll do it tonight, you think, on the

:24:22. > :24:27.form he showed. These are the finalists for this evening. Usain

:24:28. > :24:29.Bolt qualifying fastest. That involved a couple of head turns and

:24:30. > :24:47.very relaxed running from him. And that goes at 2:25 in the

:24:48. > :24:52.morning. What did you make of those? And what do you make of that

:24:53. > :24:57.line-up? The line-up isn't as good as it was last year. Justin Gatlin

:24:58. > :25:05.isn't running as fast as he was last year. Trayvon Bromell barely got

:25:06. > :25:11.into this. The other American. Andre De Grasse, from Canada, he did step

:25:12. > :25:18.up. He was a bronze medallist from last year. Yohan Blake, interesting,

:25:19. > :25:23.is back. He was one of those athletes, another Jamaican, who has

:25:24. > :25:31.just won a World Championship back in 2009, sorry. But I thought that

:25:32. > :25:36.bolt there just looked like what we expected from him. When he's

:25:37. > :25:41.healthy, and he hasn't had all the injuries issues, when he is healthy,

:25:42. > :25:48.he is unbeatable. No doubt about that. I don't expect any hiccups.

:25:49. > :25:53.He'll do what he does. Let's talk about the 1,500m. Qualifying for

:25:54. > :26:00.these middle distance events is so tough. It is. Hopefully, it won't

:26:01. > :26:09.involve hiccups and hopefully, it will be smooth running. Semis for

:26:10. > :26:16.both of the girls. Possibly slightly easy semi, the second. The form

:26:17. > :26:22.she's showing, she does have gene Simpson in there. She is up again,

:26:23. > :26:27.she has got Shannon robbery in there. How does she want this race

:26:28. > :26:37.to go? The ideal way for it to be run? Ideal for her, she's beaten a

:26:38. > :26:43.lot of the people in the semifinal, that it gots out fast. I think she's

:26:44. > :26:49.pretty comfortable there. We don't want to see it messy. She wants to

:26:50. > :26:55.walk off knowing she's given it her best shot. She got through a one of

:26:56. > :27:00.the fastest losers. She'll want this race to be more straightforward for

:27:01. > :27:13.her. She's in great shape, according to her coach. We know that Laura

:27:14. > :27:15.Weightman is in good shape. There's some serious contenders. As we look

:27:16. > :27:54.at the full line-up. Let's look at the names. Some Kenyan

:27:55. > :28:04.champion, the Commonwealth champion. Still looking for a world title.

:28:05. > :28:15.Still just 22, mind you. Brons over 800m in Moscow, through years ago.

:28:16. > :28:19.At the world championships. Bronze at the worlds back in 2009. Running

:28:20. > :28:55.very quickly last year. Ze over Five to go through automatically.

:28:56. > :29:00.The next 2 fastest losers to Tuesday's final. They'll want to be

:29:01. > :29:04.quick, not knowing how the second semifinal is going to go. And

:29:05. > :29:08.already, a fairly brisk and taking it out. Buckman, the Australian.

:29:09. > :29:09.Always a bit of a surging to the front and then it tends to settle

:29:10. > :29:31.back a That is exactly what happens. They

:29:32. > :29:33.set off at a brisk place and then they settle down and concertina and

:29:34. > :29:39.then they have to be careful. They are jogging now. They are not

:29:40. > :29:47.invested in a fast time. Laura Weightman is definitely not having

:29:48. > :29:51.that. I spoke to her coach and if it goes slow, Laura will go to the

:29:52. > :29:54.front. She's brave enough to do that. She is a strong athlete. She

:29:55. > :29:58.needs a consistent rate. She is better when she is faster. I like to

:29:59. > :30:03.see an athlete on the big occasion see what is happening, realise it is

:30:04. > :30:08.not going her way and move to the front to do it herself. This is good

:30:09. > :30:14.running by Laura Weightman. She salvaged the fist lap as they jogged

:30:15. > :30:19.for the first few minutes. Shannon Rowberry, look out for the Moroccan

:30:20. > :30:25.athlete who sits in fifth place at the moment. The tall German comes

:30:26. > :30:31.running on the outside and still Laura Weightman is the pacemaker for

:30:32. > :30:39.others at the moment. At the back of the field we are looking for two

:30:40. > :30:46.athletes - the last time they ran in a semifinal was in the Ethiopian

:30:47. > :30:51.championships. She was fouled for punching her team mate for being so

:30:52. > :31:04.competitive. They are both very, very good, indeed. She is holding

:31:05. > :31:10.the kerb. Moving through now Shannon Rowberry on the outside, alongside

:31:11. > :31:13.McGan. Brenda Martinez is there, two Americans. Still out in front Laura

:31:14. > :31:20.Weightman and the pace is beginning to lift again. That was better. 65

:31:21. > :31:24.seconds. Laura can relax, don't get herself in a bad place. Stay

:31:25. > :31:29.competitive and in. She finds herself trapped in there. She was a

:31:30. > :31:33.finalist of the Olympic Games in London. She knows her way around and

:31:34. > :31:37.knows what to do. She is running strongly and competitively. If she

:31:38. > :31:41.just stays there and doesn't get too concerned about it, she will find

:31:42. > :31:48.herself in a reasonable position from the bell. It is still bunching

:31:49. > :31:56.and arms waving and a little bit of clipping and jostling going on

:31:57. > :32:06.there. The two eat -- Ethiopians go to the front. Laura Weightman is

:32:07. > :32:10.handing on the outside. Laura Weightman is in a good position as

:32:11. > :32:14.they come up with 300 metres to go and now it will be all the way over

:32:15. > :32:18.the last 300 metres. They are queuing up on the outside. McGann of

:32:19. > :32:23.Ireland is running well. Shannon Rowberry is running well on the

:32:24. > :32:27.outside. Still at this point it is about time for Laura to be

:32:28. > :32:32.competitive and she is doing so. She is hanging on in the inside but just

:32:33. > :32:39.hanging on. Five to go through automatically. Keira McGann - she is

:32:40. > :32:44.trying to get around Chiara. The effort on the face of Laura

:32:45. > :32:49.Weightman. Shannon Rowberry and Weightman just looking around and

:32:50. > :32:56.Arafi might be the danger. The Moroccan is coming in. Weightman is

:32:57. > :33:01.digging in. The fast-finishing - Weightman tried to hold on and just

:33:02. > :33:04.on the line she makes it for fifth and for qualification for the final

:33:05. > :33:08.she is through. What an effort. What a brave effort to take it out in

:33:09. > :33:11.front and then after doing all of the work for everyone else to hold

:33:12. > :33:17.on and make it through behind the others. Well, that was a very, very

:33:18. > :33:22.good performance by Laura Weightman. She really ran well. She's in some

:33:23. > :33:28.sort of distress. I am not exactly sure. Looks like she has got a spike

:33:29. > :33:32.down the front of your foot. You can live with that if it is only a

:33:33. > :33:35.spike. Well, it is a bad one. Let's be honest, it doesn't matter if it

:33:36. > :33:41.is only a scratch. She looks anxious, but I tell you what, that

:33:42. > :33:44.was a very good run by Laura Weightman. Her experience told there

:33:45. > :33:52.and what he did was absolutely right. She moves into fifth place

:33:53. > :33:55.but Seyaum is away. Shannon Rowberry running powerfully into the

:33:56. > :33:58.finishing straight. Sago hanging on. Here comes Laura Weightman and

:33:59. > :34:01.pressure on the outside but the fighter that she is and always has

:34:02. > :34:05.been, she's battling for that. She wants to be in the final. She is

:34:06. > :34:10.determined to be in the final. She battles on through and makes her way

:34:11. > :34:15.to the final. She is digging deep. You can see the blood pouring down

:34:16. > :34:21.her leg. Hopefully it is more a cosmetic problem than it is a real

:34:22. > :34:25.wound, but at the end of the day the fastest in the world will take some

:34:26. > :34:31.beating. Shannon Rowberry running well. Laura Weightman battling for

:34:32. > :34:35.it. That is what it means to be in the Olympic final and that is how

:34:36. > :34:40.much she wanted to be. It was an effort to get there. But you see the

:34:41. > :34:43.battle scars of Weightman. That is the confrontation of nature

:34:44. > :34:47.sometimes in middle-distance running. What an effort that was

:34:48. > :34:53.from Weightman to make it through and we can confirm that for you. The

:34:54. > :35:02.noise inside the stadium is enormous at the moment. Dawt Seyaum is

:35:03. > :35:03.through and Shannon Rowberry and Laura Weightman goes through in

:35:04. > :35:05.fifth place. She spoke Laura Weightman goes through in

:35:06. > :35:11.fifth place. She spoke to Phil afterwards. Laura, we have just seen

:35:12. > :35:17.you through. You have got a bad gash on your shin there. You will need

:35:18. > :35:21.stiches. Just your reaction to make the Olympic final? I am happy Was so

:35:22. > :35:27.nervous coming into this, I didn't think I would make that final. I am

:35:28. > :35:30.so happy I have. Nobody was going to stop you coming down the home

:35:31. > :35:33.straight? I took it on. I am pleased I took the chance and I am so happy

:35:34. > :35:44.to be in that final. Congratulations. Go and get seen to.

:35:45. > :35:51.Women's triple jump under way. A final with an athlete who is a huge

:35:52. > :35:53.favourite. She said she is only here to take gold. We are in the second

:35:54. > :35:57.round. The lead at to take gold. We are in the second

:35:58. > :36:03.round. The lead at the moment. That is beyond it. It has taken the lead

:36:04. > :36:21.for sure. That looks beyond 15 metres. The world lead is her own

:36:22. > :36:32.15.04. 59.3, one centimetre shy. She goes into the lead in the second

:36:33. > :36:39.round. There is Laura Muir who got herself an incredible British record

:36:40. > :36:46.at the Anniversary Games eclipsing the win by kely. What a run to do,

:36:47. > :36:51.her last race, heading into these Olympic Games. What a gutsy run from

:36:52. > :36:55.the other Laura. She was not going to be beaten into fifth place, was

:36:56. > :36:59.she? She was going to get herself in the final. She was definitely

:37:00. > :37:03.getting into the final. She went out there and she got badly spiked. I am

:37:04. > :37:07.not sure if that was at the bell or when she was boxed a little bit. She

:37:08. > :37:11.rallied from that and she fought hard. Not even in shot yet. The

:37:12. > :37:14.Polish girl finished really, really fast. Laura sensed that. She is

:37:15. > :37:19.giving absolutely everything. This is a girl who has a semifinal place

:37:20. > :37:21.ripped away from her last year when she tripped and crossed the line

:37:22. > :37:25.qualifying for the semifinal in Beijing. So to come back from all of

:37:26. > :37:28.the difficulties that she had getting over that concussion there

:37:29. > :37:33.and to get herself into the final here, she knows she's in good shape

:37:34. > :37:36.and I think that will give her the confidence boost to let the form

:37:37. > :37:40.she's in to come out a bit. She's been trying a little bit too hard so

:37:41. > :37:45.far this season. It didn't go the way she wanted early on. It was

:37:46. > :37:49.pedestrian slow, the first 250m and then she took it on and she wound it

:37:50. > :37:55.up from there and turned it into the race to suit her. Let's see how this

:37:56. > :37:59.one goes. Laura Muir, as I say, the new British record holder. Steve

:38:00. > :38:04.Cram congratulations on the other Laura and focusing on this Laura.

:38:05. > :38:09.How will she want this 1,500 metre race to be run? Will she want to go

:38:10. > :38:13.out hard? She is in the enviable position of not really minding, I

:38:14. > :38:17.don't think. She is in such good shape if it goes out hard she can

:38:18. > :38:21.cope with that. Her coach, Andy Young have done a great job. The two

:38:22. > :38:27.of them have got her in fantastic shape. She's run good 800s. She is

:38:28. > :38:33.confident. You see how she runs aggressively and attacks in races.

:38:34. > :38:40.She doesn't need to do that here. As you saw with Laura, Seyaum, the two

:38:41. > :38:44.Ethiopians, this one again, this is an event women's 1,500 metre full of

:38:45. > :38:53.talent including Jenny Simpson in this one. Bahta here did 5,000

:38:54. > :38:56.metres. Laura Muir can absolutely qualify here. Something with

:38:57. > :39:01.something to spare. She knows it won't be easy. She said, "I won't

:39:02. > :39:06.take anything for granted. I will treat it with respect." There is the

:39:07. > :39:23.medallist of 2013 senty Simpson of the USA. Around about 25.6 if you

:39:24. > :39:28.are not in the top five here. What do we expect from Dibaba? A troubled

:39:29. > :39:34.season for her that began so well, family well, with world records jip

:39:35. > :39:40.doctors and running so well indoors and then injury problems that her

:39:41. > :39:46.coach caught up in a controversy - his own controversy of his own

:39:47. > :39:49.making. The squad he looks after in Spain at the time that is where

:39:50. > :39:56.Dibaba trains when the coach was arrested. She's had a troubled

:39:57. > :40:00.season. She did run 3.599 in shoes because foot problems have caused

:40:01. > :40:05.her not to be able to wear spikes early on. We are expecting her to be

:40:06. > :40:16.a real contender. Dibaba in this one. Watch out for Laura Muir going

:40:17. > :40:20.for Great Britain. A word on Hassan, Brendon. She will go to the back as

:40:21. > :40:26.ever. She will be dangerous. She had real hamstring problems and after

:40:27. > :40:30.winning the world title she said she was in great shape and looking

:40:31. > :40:34.forward to Rio. She had 10 weeks out not being able to run. She could do

:40:35. > :40:39.cross training and then started to do normal running. She's really only

:40:40. > :40:43.been doing track work for six or seven weeks. She has got into good

:40:44. > :40:49.shape pretty quickly. You are looking at Hassan and Dibaba. Both

:40:50. > :40:53.we know what outstanding athletes they are. World-record holder and

:40:54. > :40:55.world champion. Like any athlete, you have got to transgress through

:40:56. > :41:01.the season and move forward. They are both here with difficulty, but

:41:02. > :41:07.let's see what happens. Jenny Simpson, former world champion, and

:41:08. > :41:12.in top of the them, the African athletes. Muirfield has gone

:41:13. > :41:16.perfectly well for Laura. Breaking Kelly's record was a huge boost

:41:17. > :41:20.psychologically and physically, but to do that at the Anniversary Games

:41:21. > :41:24.was a wonderful performance and the confidence she's got these days. You

:41:25. > :41:30.can see the confidence oozing from Laura Muir from the position that

:41:31. > :41:36.she takes up in the race. Her coach, Andy, will be nervously watching

:41:37. > :41:40.this. He's not the best spectator, as many of us aren't. I don't think

:41:41. > :41:43.she will have too much to worry about here. Laura is in a good

:41:44. > :41:47.position. She's moving up a little bit. Being in the second semifinal I

:41:48. > :41:52.amateur use as to why Jenny Simpson feels as though she wants to take

:41:53. > :41:55.this out. She's got good pace, Jenny Simpson, and she's decided to get

:41:56. > :42:00.this moving along. Not super fast. Blundell. Maybe she's thinking, a

:42:01. > :42:07.bit like Laura Weightman, let's make it steady and get it in the right

:42:08. > :42:11.zone. "If I do mess up, I have got a chance." I think you are exactly

:42:12. > :42:15.right. There is Laura Muir deciding she wants to be competitive there.

:42:16. > :42:20.Two minutes there and two laps to go in the women's 1,500 metre

:42:21. > :42:24.semifinal. Laura Muir has been outstanding this year. All year

:42:25. > :42:29.she's been threatening promising. This is the arena she wants to be

:42:30. > :42:33.in. She is in it. She is in the right police, perfectly poised at

:42:34. > :42:36.the top of the straight. She can prepared to be a brave runner and

:42:37. > :42:42.maybe she will run bravely here to show how good she is. She is doing

:42:43. > :42:45.it well. She is doing it convincingly and comfortably. She is

:42:46. > :42:49.not trying to break away from them. I don't know if she needs to do that

:42:50. > :42:59.today, but she looks good tonight. Dibaba just moving up a little bit

:43:00. > :43:07.in the green vessel and red shorts. Hassan is still at the back. The

:43:08. > :43:11.Polish athlete who won the European Final, giving even a head start. The

:43:12. > :43:17.two big names are coming in. Dibaba kicks hard. Muir reabouts. Hassan.

:43:18. > :43:22.Simpson has to try and pick up. The race is on. It will be a big burn on

:43:23. > :43:26.the last lap. The big three are away and gone. Simpson is trying to go

:43:27. > :43:33.with them. They are already opening up a gap here. She responded well,

:43:34. > :43:37.Laura Muir, when they came at her. Dibaba, Hassan stretching out. Both

:43:38. > :43:40.of them need the race. Both of them have been great athletes in the

:43:41. > :43:44.past. Look at Laura Muir matching them down the back straight. She

:43:45. > :43:48.looks equally classy as those two athletes - we know how good they are

:43:49. > :43:52.- but she could be the next star emerging. She is not giving up on

:43:53. > :43:57.this. She is running powerfully around the bend. But she doesn't

:43:58. > :44:02.need to. She might want to show them she can stay with them, but she can

:44:03. > :44:05.probably relax a bit. Hassan and Dibaba are having their own battle.

:44:06. > :44:11.She can stride down and it looks like she's got this well in control.

:44:12. > :44:17.Jenny Simpson moves clear into fourth place. Bahta will take fifth.

:44:18. > :44:22.That is probably the result we would have expected. A tad quicker than

:44:23. > :44:26.the first heat. Both fairly similar, to be fair. Simpson rewarded by

:44:27. > :44:30.going out hard. She got what she wanted. A big kick from the big

:44:31. > :44:34.three, if you like. If you had - for me before this, there were four

:44:35. > :44:41.people who have a chance of a medal here. We have seen three of them

:44:42. > :44:45.there. I will say five. Seyaum. Laura Muir has done nothing there to

:44:46. > :44:50.suggest she cannot attack these guys. I tell you'll what, you have

:44:51. > :44:53.got the world-record holder and world champion Dibaba and Hassan the

:44:54. > :44:57.world indoor champion and Laura Muir, who is not the champion yet,

:44:58. > :45:00.but I tell you what, she's absolutely in the same class as

:45:01. > :45:05.those two. She is matching them stride for stride. She matched them

:45:06. > :45:09.from the bell. They ran 57.5 for the last lap and I tell you she's got

:45:10. > :45:12.more in the tank. When you look at the way she is running, she is

:45:13. > :45:16.completely world-class and I can't wait for the final. I think Laura

:45:17. > :45:22.Muir is going to be a sensation in that final. Don't take it that the

:45:23. > :45:26.two that bet her today will beat her in the final. She is still in

:45:27. > :45:32.control. Dibaba is straining, Hassan is straining and Laura Muir, fer me,

:45:33. > :45:35.the temperature is rising, the confidence is rising. Her ability is

:45:36. > :45:39.without question. Her commitment has been seen before, but today that was

:45:40. > :45:43.a step in the real world-class by Laura Muir and I'll tell you the

:45:44. > :45:48.coach has done a great job. Laura has done a great job and the final

:45:49. > :45:51.is just going to be a fantastic opportunity for Laura Muir to move

:45:52. > :46:00.to the very, very highest levels in this sport. That was a tremendous

:46:01. > :46:05.performance, Laura. You are through to the Olympic final. Your reaction?

:46:06. > :46:08.That is very good. I just knew to stay out of trouble basically and

:46:09. > :46:13.come through and I didn't want to give up that spot. I saw I had quite

:46:14. > :46:18.a bit left there. I wanted to save everything for the final. We saw the

:46:19. > :46:21.three big medal favourites, yourself included there. Were you trying to

:46:22. > :46:28.make a point you could live with those girls? No, not really. I just

:46:29. > :46:35.wanted to qualify comfortably. I could see a gap. I just wanted to

:46:36. > :46:40.get to the final. There is in point using all my energy in the semi. It

:46:41. > :46:44.shows what sort of shape you are in and have been all year you are

:46:45. > :46:48.rubbing shoulders with these kind of people and come finals time, all of

:46:49. > :46:52.the talk of medals is not foolish. No. Anything can happen with the

:46:53. > :46:59.Olympic final. I know I have done as much as I can to get there and saved

:47:00. > :47:03.as much as I can to win. I am just excited. We are all behind you.

:47:04. > :47:10.Thank you very much. Yes, well done, Laura. So Dibaba, Hassan, Laura

:47:11. > :47:15.Muir, Jenny Simpson and Bahta all going through. That is probably the

:47:16. > :47:19.result we expected. Not any of the big names becoming a casualty in

:47:20. > :47:23.either of those semifinals. We can look at the qualifiers for the final

:47:24. > :47:29.and the good news for Great Britain is that both Lauras are through to

:47:30. > :47:32.the final. The two fastest winners will, indeed, come from the first

:47:33. > :47:36.semifinal - only just. There were bigger gaps in that semifinal. Here

:47:37. > :47:39.are all of the names, certainly five or six who will consider themselves

:47:40. > :47:47.in with a good chance. Laura Weightman off to get a couple of

:47:48. > :47:52.stiches in that injury. Arafi as well go through as fastest losers.

:47:53. > :48:01.Great support for this triple jump final because of the two athletes

:48:02. > :48:11.involved, South Americans. This is the third round. She is chasing the

:48:12. > :48:18.Columbian. She likes it. That lead of the Columbian 15.03. Rojas is

:48:19. > :48:24.from Venezuela. She is 20 years of age. She looks in good shape. She

:48:25. > :48:27.looks up for it, doesn't she? The two countries of course are

:48:28. > :48:39.bordering Brazil on the northern coast, south of the Caribbean sea.

:48:40. > :48:49.Good support. The young Rojas looking to stop the silver

:48:50. > :48:55.medallist. To their left at the top of the stadium, Murray Baker --

:48:56. > :49:00.Chris Baker eyeing up 2 metres 26. He was a bit nerve yes. Can he

:49:01. > :49:07.settle? Yes, he can. Slightest of wobbles, but Baker goes clear in

:49:08. > :49:15.qualification at 2.26. He will need 2.31 to be auto qualifying, but

:49:16. > :49:21.maybe 29 first attempt. Two pools of 22 athletes. It is taking forever

:49:22. > :49:27.this high jump competition. It has been on for over an hour already.

:49:28. > :49:31.Chris Baker is doing well. So Laura Weightman and Laura Muir through to

:49:32. > :49:35.the 1,500 metre final on Tuesday. Laura Muir the British record holder

:49:36. > :49:40.showing she can hack with the best in the world. Paula, you were saying

:49:41. > :49:46.she didn't need to run that hard. She didn't. That is just crazy. That

:49:47. > :49:50.is just Dibaba trying to throw down the challenge. Hassan getting caught

:49:51. > :49:55.up in racing. I was glass to see Laura look up at the screen finally.

:49:56. > :50:00.I would have liked her to do that down the back straight and ease off

:50:01. > :50:06.a bit. Jenny Simpson isn't in as good shape as Laura Muir, but she

:50:07. > :50:11.looked up that screen and knew she was clear and conserved a bit of

:50:12. > :50:14.energy. At the Anniversary Games, we know she's in fantastic form. She is

:50:15. > :50:19.clearly not afraid of anybody in that field. Is there a type of race

:50:20. > :50:20.that will suit her or will she go with whatever they throw down at

:50:21. > :50:23.her? Is she genuinely going to be with whatever they throw down at

:50:24. > :50:23.her? Is she genuinely going to be there

:50:24. > :50:26.with whatever they throw down at her? Is she genuinely going to be

:50:27. > :50:33.there or thereabouts in the end? When you take a step forward and

:50:34. > :50:38.beat a British record that stands to Kelly Holmes, you are coming set up.

:50:39. > :50:42.She knows whichever way the race goes she can handle it. Mentally,

:50:43. > :50:46.she's much, much stronger than the athlete we saw going out frustrated

:50:47. > :50:49.indoors or even falling? The Commonwealth Games. She's really

:50:50. > :50:54.moved on from that and she believes she can beat these girls I below she

:50:55. > :50:57.can as well. Even a year on from the Commonwealth Games, she was

:50:58. > :51:02.basically the first athlete after the African runners. She beat the

:51:03. > :51:06.Americans in Beijing which was a big psychologically step for her as

:51:07. > :51:10.well. I think when an athlete is in straight and can run a race any

:51:11. > :51:15.which way, and she has proved that, she takes her time and decides her

:51:16. > :51:19.tactics and how she can respond. I have loved watching her grow over

:51:20. > :51:23.the last few years and I think there is a sneaky chance, isn't there, it

:51:24. > :51:29.is tough. We have to underline it is tough. She's got Dibaba in there and

:51:30. > :51:33.Hassan, OK who had an injury, but is rapidly coming back the form. She

:51:34. > :51:37.has got Seyaum. It will be tough, but she can mix it with them and we

:51:38. > :51:40.saw there she has another gear yet. She didn't put it all out there

:51:41. > :51:46.tonight. Time is flying this evening. I can't believe we are only

:51:47. > :51:50.half an hour away from Usain Bolt entering the arena once more for the

:51:51. > :51:56.blue ribbon event, the 100 metre final. The highlight for athletics

:51:57. > :52:01.fans. You can so that as this stadium is packed. I won't say

:52:02. > :52:05.completely packed. There are a few seats up the top there spare.

:52:06. > :52:11.Obviously some people have to go to work in the morning. Boo-hoo to you.

:52:12. > :52:16.They really have become very vocal this crowd, haven't they, Michael

:52:17. > :52:22.Johnson? They have. They understand the Jamaican brand as well. We have

:52:23. > :52:26.seep that from the other Jamaican athletes. There is a huge upper

:52:27. > :52:31.deck. This is as full as it has been and it is good to see that and we

:52:32. > :52:35.will expect to hear that roar again when Usain Bolt comes out this

:52:36. > :52:41.evening for for the final. Before that we have the men's 400 metre

:52:42. > :52:45.final, Michael. That proms to be as equally exciting and was possibly

:52:46. > :52:49.the most exiting moment of last year's World Championship. The

:52:50. > :52:53.similar progress tagnists are on the podium and we expect them to be

:52:54. > :52:56.there or thereabouts. Lashawn Merritt was Olympic champion but

:52:57. > :53:00.then had a mibed few years since. Where do you see him fitting into

:53:01. > :53:03.this narrative tonight? I think many people might see him as the

:53:04. > :53:07.favourite because he's got the fastest time in the 400 metres this

:53:08. > :53:12.year and he has the fastest time in the 200m this year. That is

:53:13. > :53:21.impressive. He ran 19.74 in the semifinals of the US championships

:53:22. > :53:26.and he will be competing in the 200. I meant KKarani James when I say

:53:27. > :53:32.Olympic champion. Yes. I know you are a fan. I can't even get the name

:53:33. > :53:38.out. Let's talk about Karani James? He is the Olympic champion. After he

:53:39. > :53:44.won in 2012 Lashawn Merritt beat him in the World Championship in 2013

:53:45. > :53:49.and then James got it back in 2015 so those guys have been going back

:53:50. > :53:54.and forth and it is a true rivalry. The advantage that Karani James has

:53:55. > :53:59.is he is tall and rangey. He reminds me of Usain Bolt. Many people don't

:54:00. > :54:02.know that Usain Bolt held the world junior record and Karani James broke

:54:03. > :54:07.that, I believe, as a 1 #r5-year-old. That is when we first

:54:08. > :54:09.started to see him. He is long stride and rangey. Many of the times

:54:10. > :54:12.we see with him stride and rangey. Many of the times

:54:13. > :54:16.we see with him is at the end of his race he gets ragged. Arms and legs

:54:17. > :54:21.going everywhere and not holding that form as you would like and

:54:22. > :54:25.being symmetrical coming down the home stretch. People have asked

:54:26. > :54:29.could he back the world record? If he cleaned up his form it could be

:54:30. > :54:34.possible. You see him with Lashawn Merritt. Merritt is more composed

:54:35. > :54:39.and has upper-body strength and holds it together much more. What

:54:40. > :54:44.was impressive, this time in these championships in the semifinal

:54:45. > :54:49.yesterday I saw Becky James -- Karani James hold his loin. Maybe

:54:50. > :54:54.that has been worked on this year so that could bode well for his

:54:55. > :54:59.chances. This is not here. This is in the last few years. Legs coming

:55:00. > :55:03.out. You see that left foot continuing to come outside of the.

:55:04. > :55:06.Plain doing something completely different from what the right foot

:55:07. > :55:11.is doing. What that does is flicks you off balance. When you get off

:55:12. > :55:17.balance like, that that takes more energy than when everything is going

:55:18. > :55:22.symmetrical. Raids raze We spoke to him a year ago when he came into the

:55:23. > :55:27.studio. You gave him advice. He's done very well to get into this

:55:28. > :55:30.final? He has. He is a great athlete, a great young man who has

:55:31. > :55:34.started to study the sport a bit more. He had a great semifinal and

:55:35. > :55:37.he was so excited. What that has done is given him a lot of

:55:38. > :55:41.confidence. I think he was helped here by the fact he was running on

:55:42. > :55:48.the outside lane. He didn't have to worry about running with anyone else

:55:49. > :55:52.and whether I respond to the other athletes. I am sure his coach would

:55:53. > :55:58.have said, Matthew, go out and run the race and run it smartly. I am

:55:59. > :56:03.sure that is what he did. He made a mistake from 100 to 200, but made a

:56:04. > :56:07.great adjustment and that shows that he has studied test ven and figured

:56:08. > :56:11.out how to make the right adjustments and he put himself in

:56:12. > :56:16.position to come off with a lot left so he could look at how much he has

:56:17. > :56:19.to make up, but he has that ability to make that up because he didn't

:56:20. > :56:24.continue to push from 200 metres to 300 metres around the bend, which is

:56:25. > :56:30.what you would normally do. He will need to run this race tonight and

:56:31. > :56:34.he's in a great position. He is in lane 7. He won't want to be doing

:56:35. > :56:37.this because these guys will not come back to him like in the

:56:38. > :56:42.semifinal. They are fatigued and he is able to come through. Lashawn

:56:43. > :56:47.Merritt, Karani James, those guys will be moving away from himz. You

:56:48. > :56:51.see the reaction there. It is fantastic to see when you see an

:56:52. > :56:57.athlete with that sort of confidence. It is fantastic. He was

:56:58. > :57:01.injured, remember. He's come through that. He had stress fractures in his

:57:02. > :57:04.back. It is a big opportunity for him to take his career forward. We

:57:05. > :57:18.wish him all the best. Andrew Cotter. What a line-up, what a final

:57:19. > :57:27.to come. Eric Liddle in 1924 won from that lane. Inside him

:57:28. > :57:31.surrounded by some of the greatest runners there have ever been. A big

:57:32. > :57:39.perm best, took him not too far from the British record. Has he got more

:57:40. > :57:43.to give. The man inside him has seen the last two grand finals sin he won

:57:44. > :57:55.it again. Can he retain the Olympic title he won so famously? London?

:57:56. > :58:05.Unbeaten this season. Lashawn Merritt, the world champion in

:58:06. > :58:09.Moscow three years ago. Granada with a population of 200,000 two men.

:58:10. > :58:23.Taplin, don't rule him out. There is Machel Cedenio. He anchored

:58:24. > :58:42.Trinidad and Tobago to silver as a 19-year-old. Ali Khamis of Bahrain.

:58:43. > :58:46.And he only ran a couple of races in Bulgaria before an extraordinary

:58:47. > :58:51.performance in the previous rounds. And comfortably the youngest in this

:58:52. > :59:01.line-up. Hacked a huge chunk off his PB in his semifinal.

:59:02. > :59:07.They came in anywhere thousands to see Usain Bolt later on. But this

:59:08. > :59:11.race, promises to be one of the very best.

:59:12. > :59:20.Kirani James looks to the skies and LaShawn Merritt takes his position.

:59:21. > :59:25.Merritt and James and Van Niekerk in five, six and 8. Hudson-Smith sits

:59:26. > :59:32.between them in 7. Silence inside the stadium.

:59:33. > :59:37.Events going on elsewhere, but the ripple will die away. The final of

:59:38. > :59:50.the men's 400m. Away they go! So LaShawn Merritt

:59:51. > :59:55.will look at the men outside him. He'll sthear them down and hunt them

:59:56. > :00:00.down. And Kirani James with that loose limb style. Already, and Van

:00:01. > :00:04.Niekerk on the far extremes, no-one outside him except for the roar of

:00:05. > :00:09.the crowd. And LaShawn Merritt, LaShawn Merritt so close to Kirani

:00:10. > :00:17.James already. It's surely between these 3. Matthew Hudson-Smith at a

:00:18. > :00:20.long way back with the rest. But it's these 3 men, 3 abreast, Wayde

:00:21. > :00:24.van Niekerk gone out very quickly. Can he hold on! 3 men and the gold

:00:25. > :00:28.medal waiting for one. But Wayde van Niekerk is going further clear.

:00:29. > :00:38.Kirani James and Merritt tying up. Van Niekerk takes it! And it's a new

:00:39. > :00:43.world record! 43.03. Extraordinary! Inside the Olympic Stadium, in Rio

:00:44. > :00:52.de Janeiro, and Michael Johnson's record has gone! Olympic gold and

:00:53. > :00:58.the fastest 400m of all time! And the crowd realise it now and the

:00:59. > :01:03.roar gross. And Wayde van Niekerk has done something astonishing,

:01:04. > :01:08.incredible. He left the likes of LaShawn Merritt and Kirani James so

:01:09. > :01:13.far behind. He beats the best that history had to offer in Michael

:01:14. > :01:16.Johnson, and that was something, very, very special. One of the

:01:17. > :01:25.greatest runs you'll ever see. Oh, my god! From lane 8! World record!

:01:26. > :01:31.He took it out so quick! And I've never seen from 200 to 400, anything

:01:32. > :01:37.like that. What we want to see, is what his splits were. He could have

:01:38. > :01:42.well run negative splits, meaning he ran faster in the second 200 than he

:01:43. > :01:51.ran in the first 200, which would make this even more amazing. Well

:01:52. > :01:57.done to the youngster. This guy has gone under 10 second, under 20

:01:58. > :02:00.seconds. Under 44 seconds and now a world record. Kirani James, second

:02:01. > :02:08.place. That was a massacre from Wayde van Niekerk. I mean, he just

:02:09. > :02:13.put those guys away. Last year, he was dead at this point. He couldn't

:02:14. > :02:17.even get off the ground. LaShawn Merritt is shaking his head, going,

:02:18. > :02:28.I can't do anything with that. What can you do? 43.03. And he is so

:02:29. > :02:32.young. What else can he do? Can he go under 43 seconds? That is

:02:33. > :02:38.something that I thought I could do, didn't get a chance to do it, but

:02:39. > :02:47.this young man has done something truly, truly special. And you were

:02:48. > :02:52.saying, you were saying... Usain Bolt will be retiring out of this

:02:53. > :02:55.sport soon. Let's take a look at this and analyse it. He took a

:02:56. > :03:01.little bit out of Kirani James and LaShawn Merritt at the very

:03:02. > :03:06.beginning, as you see there. In the first part of this. Now coming into

:03:07. > :03:11.the home stretch, he's got a lead that he is just able to extend and

:03:12. > :03:16.extend and extend. Look at Van Niekerk in comparison to Merritt and

:03:17. > :03:21.James. He is just pulling away from them at this point. And I was

:03:22. > :03:25.saying, when I saw him about ten metres from the finish line, this is

:03:26. > :03:33.a world record, this is a world record. And sure enough, he breaks

:03:34. > :03:38.that world record. By 15 hundreds of a second. Perfect form coming into

:03:39. > :03:43.this. Not slowing down. Maybe he knew based on the way he finished

:03:44. > :03:49.that, so far ahead of them, maybe he knew that he actually was going to

:03:50. > :03:56.break that record. Well, I think he did know. He said, or he suspected,

:03:57. > :04:04.because, he said, that he had that in him tonight. I was chatting to

:04:05. > :04:10.Martin Rooney at the training track. He said, Van Niekerk told me, he is

:04:11. > :04:22.going to run 42 something. He almost did! A question back to Michael, he

:04:23. > :04:26.ran 43.03 the lane 8. Why should we knock him back for 43.03. An

:04:27. > :04:34.incredible performance. At least he is not lying on the ground this

:04:35. > :04:40.time. I wonder, had he been in another lane, he could have gone

:04:41. > :04:47.faster. But maybe lane 8 helped him. He had to go out hard. Yeah, being

:04:48. > :04:53.out in lane 8 actually helped him. He was able to run his race and run

:04:54. > :04:57.the race that he knew he had to run. Versus become in the middle of the

:04:58. > :05:02.track with Merritt and Kirani James in front of him. You got to win the

:05:03. > :05:07.gold medal first. You need to win the race. He would've been

:05:08. > :05:15.responding to them and maybe making as adjustments. Out in lane 8, there

:05:16. > :05:22.are no adjustments to make. You execute the ray how you feel you

:05:23. > :05:29.need to do it. And you produce your fastest time, regardless of what the

:05:30. > :05:35.other competitors are doing. This is unbelievable. The speed endurance,

:05:36. > :05:40.the ability to hold the speed that he took off, at the very beginning

:05:41. > :05:46.of the race, and what we would say, the long way around in lane 8. Far

:05:47. > :05:51.from a bad run from Matthew Hudson-Smith. A long way distant

:05:52. > :05:57.behind Wayde van Niekerk, about you that world record of Michael's goes

:05:58. > :06:06.back to Seville, 1999. It's been blown away. A big chunk taken off

:06:07. > :06:12.it. I was privileged enough to be in the stadium that night, commentating

:06:13. > :06:16.on Michael's race. But look at that. So close to breaking 43 seconds. But

:06:17. > :06:22.the Olympic golded is everything. For it to come with a world record,

:06:23. > :06:30.such as that, something very, very special. And Kirani James and

:06:31. > :06:34.LaShawn Merritt were so far behind. An extraordinary win tonight. A gold

:06:35. > :06:41.medal winning run and something extraordinary from Wayde van

:06:42. > :06:44.Niekerk. It was going to take something extraordinary to break

:06:45. > :06:49.Michael Johnson's record. And it did happen tonight. Wayde van Niekerk,

:06:50. > :06:53.he blew us all away last year in Beijing. We didn't know he had quite

:06:54. > :07:01.some magic in the locker for tonight. But that was an incredible

:07:02. > :07:07.run. He is coached by a 74-year-old great grandmother. She has something

:07:08. > :07:11.pretty impressive going on. I don't know what drills she is doing.

:07:12. > :07:16.Congratulations for holding it for so long. Commiserations it's no

:07:17. > :07:22.longer yours. But that was some style to break it. When I walked

:07:23. > :07:26.into the studio in Beijing when Usain Bolt breaking my world record.

:07:27. > :07:31.And I remember you asking me if I was OK. And I was OK for a few years

:07:32. > :07:38.and I'm still OK. Being a fan of the sport now, it's incredible to see,

:07:39. > :07:44.it's incredible to watch and I think I'll be OK tomorrow. I think I'll

:07:45. > :07:49.walk up again and life will go on. But he'll wake up tomorrow feeling

:07:50. > :07:54.that, wow, identify done it. I know what that feels like. Working on and

:07:55. > :08:01.how do you break the record. Where can I take off a little time here

:08:02. > :08:05.and there. Always knowing that your major opportunity to break a world

:08:06. > :08:08.record is going to come what you're under pressure and it's a major

:08:09. > :08:12.championship. He was under tremendous pressure and that helped

:08:13. > :08:16.him as well. Knowing that LaShawn Merritt, Kirani James, the big guys,

:08:17. > :08:20.Olympic champions, they were going to put him under a tremendous amount

:08:21. > :08:24.of pressure. Number 1, for him to win for his country, win the gold

:08:25. > :08:29.medal at the Olympic level, it was going to take a fast time. When we

:08:30. > :08:34.came into these championships, you know what, I wonder if this is going

:08:35. > :08:38.to be one of our greatest Olympics. But that performance for me was

:08:39. > :08:42.incredible. I was in Seville, I watched Michael run, and there were

:08:43. > :08:48.4 rounds back then. You did it the hard way. That world record, I never

:08:49. > :08:56.thought I would get -- it would get broken. And we had a record on day

:08:57. > :09:05.1, in the 10,000m. And this record has stood for a long time. And we've

:09:06. > :09:10.seen a rich crop of runners come. This was a generation that could

:09:11. > :09:16.challenge that. And that magic 43 second. He is just a breath away

:09:17. > :09:20.from it. He is going to get under the 43 second. That will be tough.

:09:21. > :09:25.Now he's the favourite. He goes in always as the guy with the target on

:09:26. > :09:31.his back. And he is going to want to protect that. Last year, when we saw

:09:32. > :09:36.all 3 medallists at the world championship it is go under 44

:09:37. > :09:40.second, this is now a crop of athletes that will create an

:09:41. > :09:48.environment that allows someone to break the world record. And we've

:09:49. > :09:53.seen that with Van Niekerk. I have a picture like that! Your picket still

:09:54. > :09:59.looks fantastic. He has a great pedigree. His step father was a

:10:00. > :10:06.runner. He comes from an athletics family. He's grown up and about

:10:07. > :10:10.around that environment. A 74-year-old great grandmother is

:10:11. > :10:15.coaching him. You got years left in the business, mate! Oh, dear. That's

:10:16. > :10:24.all I'm going to say about that! That's an incredible time. To run

:10:25. > :10:32.under that, you're running 10.5 all the way around. He switched from 200

:10:33. > :10:38.to 400. He wanted to ease the pressure on his hamstrings. Good

:10:39. > :10:45.decision. Good decision. He can go back to 200. He's not oworld record

:10:46. > :10:51.at 200. But he can go back to 200 and contest for championships once

:10:52. > :10:55.Bolt is out at 200m as well. Bolt, it's funny you mention him, he's

:10:56. > :11:00.done some training with him, and even Bolt said, this guy is

:11:01. > :11:06.seriously quick. It's such an incredible night. It's totally blown

:11:07. > :11:11.this stadium into a fit of hysteria. And that's before Usain Bolt comes

:11:12. > :11:17.out. What a starter to what we thought it was the main course. We

:11:18. > :11:27.may be our dinner in reverse tonight. This was his reaction when

:11:28. > :11:30.Wade went through with the world record. I don't think that's the

:11:31. > :11:36.reaction. That was a bit more animated. If that was your reaction,

:11:37. > :11:42.you weren't even watching him! We have got your reaction. You were

:11:43. > :11:46.full of joy. I glanced across and thought, this could be awkward! But

:11:47. > :11:52.you were all right. It was great to see, again. Just as a fan of the

:11:53. > :11:57.sport, you want to see this sort of thing. People ask all the time, how

:11:58. > :12:02.long do you think a record is going to last? That could last another 19

:12:03. > :12:05.years, 20 years, it could be broken next year by someone else. It could

:12:06. > :12:12.be broken again by him. You never know. You never know when you're

:12:13. > :12:15.going to get 1. Always a joy and a surprise to see a world record

:12:16. > :12:20.broken. In these championships, that was one that this atmosphere needed

:12:21. > :12:25.it. You know? To get people sort of going, get this championships really

:12:26. > :12:30.going. We saw the first day, the 10,000m world record, we saw a great

:12:31. > :12:39.long jump, and tonight, I said this was going to outshine the 100m. You

:12:40. > :12:46.can see on your screen, Jessica Ennis-Hill is out in the stadium and

:12:47. > :12:54.enjoying this atmosphere as she gets ready to receive her silver medal. A

:12:55. > :13:00.proud moment for you? It's a mixed. -- a bit mixed. She got very, very

:13:01. > :13:06.close to retaining her Olympic title. It's a bit mixed. As a coach,

:13:07. > :13:12.you think, could I have done a little bit more? Could I have

:13:13. > :13:17.supported her better? Really? You think about that about yourself?

:13:18. > :13:27.There's your job. We have seen a coach do an awesome job with an

:13:28. > :13:31.athlete. Her husband, Ashton Eaton, the current Olympic and world

:13:32. > :13:36.champion. He'll be going for his deck long later in the week. We

:13:37. > :13:39.thought she was going to be the interloper and challenge Jess last

:13:40. > :13:45.year. And again, her name was there this year. She had a bit a slow

:13:46. > :13:50.start but came out for the bronze medal.

:13:51. > :13:57.I enjoyed the 800m, but the man who called most of this was Steve

:13:58. > :14:03.backly. This is a special moment for Jessica Ennis-Hill. And there she

:14:04. > :14:09.is, Steve. Jessica Ennis-Hill, gold 4 years ago. Had to settle for

:14:10. > :14:18.silver yesterday. Didn't she give it everything. She really gave the

:14:19. > :14:24.Belgian a run for her money. Gave it everything she had. Said it's her

:14:25. > :14:28.last Olympics. A silver medal to came home to her son Reggie. Only

:14:29. > :14:30.Christine Ohuruogu has done the gold and silver. No-one as ever matched

:14:31. > :14:56.Jessica Ennis-Hill. A big roar for a wonderful

:14:57. > :15:01.performance. Five lifetime bests and what a performance from the

:15:02. > :15:07.21-year-old. Equalled the best ever in the high jump, 1.98. She said she

:15:08. > :15:15.came here, just happy to be in the top 8. But there she is, in the top

:15:16. > :15:16.spot, the young Belgian. Absolutely brilliant performance and an Olympic

:15:17. > :16:29.gold medal. APPLAUSE

:16:30. > :16:35.Tears from the youngster. And you have to think at 21 years of age,

:16:36. > :16:40.it's just the start of her journey, and maybe, many, many more titles to

:16:41. > :16:43.come. And a great performance and a fond farewell from an Olympic point

:16:44. > :16:54.of view, at least, for Jessica Ennis-Hill. What a birthday present

:16:55. > :16:59.for young Thiam, who will be celebrating her birthday in a couple

:17:00. > :17:05.of days' time. I don't think she would have believed this would be

:17:06. > :17:11.happening to her quite so soon. I can't help but look at Jess and

:17:12. > :17:16.wonder what she's thinking. I think she said to me she is satisfied with

:17:17. > :17:22.her performance. She wanted to come to an Olympics and get another

:17:23. > :17:27.medal. That's what we wanted to do. Leading into London, she was first

:17:28. > :17:35.and foremost an athlete, but after Reggie was born, she was first and

:17:36. > :17:43.fore most a mother first. You know her. If you had to put your money on

:17:44. > :17:48.it, will we see her next in London? I'm not going to enter that in that

:17:49. > :17:58.direct a fashion. And would you like to coach her in London? I think we

:17:59. > :18:04.both have to make decisions. To see if there's anything she wants to do.

:18:05. > :18:11.That will take her two months or so. Won't she get bored? She has a

:18:12. > :18:15.little boy. You don't get bored with a 2-year-old running around. It's up

:18:16. > :18:19.to her for making those decisions and search yourself as to what you

:18:20. > :18:27.want to do. She's at that point in her life. That's what you call

:18:28. > :18:32.non-committal in terms of an answer. We would love to see her in London.

:18:33. > :18:37.Steve, take it away! It's the big show! We thought this was the big

:18:38. > :18:44.show of the night. Been a fairly big one already. What a night and what

:18:45. > :18:52.more to come. The new introductions, introduced in Beijing. They are

:18:53. > :18:58.coming out one by one into the gladdatoral arena. They are not

:18:59. > :19:01.coming out in the lanes their in. Which is very confusing for

:19:02. > :19:08.commentators. Simbine will be lane 3. Trayvon Bromell in lane 2. He's

:19:09. > :19:14.the world indoor champion. Second to Justin Gatlin in the American

:19:15. > :19:22.championships. Having a saunter out here and seeing, which way do I go?

:19:23. > :19:27.Well, this place is packed to the rafters. De Grasse, 2 bronze medals

:19:28. > :19:30.at the world championships last year. Just 21 years of age. 9.92,

:19:31. > :19:48.his best. Queensland that this year. Just a word on Chijindu Ujah, he

:19:49. > :19:55.missed out by a couple of thousandths of a second. And a

:19:56. > :19:58.fastest loser, just outside 10 seconds, everyone else running

:19:59. > :20:09.sub-10 to make it through. Blake was just outside, actually. Oh. Well,

:20:10. > :20:14.audible boos for Justin Gatlin. I'm not sure the last time I heard that

:20:15. > :20:19.happen. Normally, he is reasonably well received. Certainly the bad boy

:20:20. > :20:24.of last year, probably the team of Russia have taken that spotlight

:20:25. > :20:29.away from him in 2016. Vicaut, the European or joint European record

:20:30. > :20:39.holder, in great form. Looked much better in the semifinal. He'll be in

:20:40. > :20:48.line five, here we go... Getting ready to rumble in Rio!

:20:49. > :21:06.Usain Bolt! He walks out into this Calderon. Of heat. Expectation, of

:21:07. > :21:13.light. As we look down at the dark of the Rio de Janeiro night. It's

:21:14. > :21:18.almost 10:30 here. But it feels as though the action is really just

:21:19. > :21:23.about to get going. But after Van Niekerk's world record, I'm sure

:21:24. > :21:29.that Usain Bolt will not want anybody to steal any of his thunder.

:21:30. > :21:38.When you think back to this man, he only ran his first 200m in 2011. Six

:21:39. > :21:45.foot 5 at the age of 15. He even ran the 400m. Maybe he thought he

:21:46. > :21:56.could've been the man. He asked Glen Mills if he could run the 100, and

:21:57. > :22:01.yep, they said, he's ready to go. He ran 10.03 in his first 100m race. He

:22:02. > :22:09.continued to get quicker and continued to rewrite the history

:22:10. > :22:15.books. That semifinal we saw, the quickest since Beijing in 2008 when

:22:16. > :22:17.he went on the break what was then the world record in the final and

:22:18. > :22:34.win his first Olympic gold medal. Usain Bolt lapping it up. It's

:22:35. > :22:39.incredible that he's in this moment, on in press of history, about to

:22:40. > :22:44.potentially win a third Olympic gold and he has time for all of this.

:22:45. > :22:50.It's what he does. It's part of his thick. This crowd has really gotten

:22:51. > :22:55.into it. He is lapping it up. This is a fantastic environment. They are

:22:56. > :23:01.excited after of that world record in the 400m. Bolt, unprecedented

:23:02. > :23:05.success up to this point. Darren Campbell asked me earlier if I

:23:06. > :23:10.thought that Bolt would get nervous about this, as his last Olympics.

:23:11. > :23:15.And I responded that I think that we'll expect even more. Because he's

:23:16. > :23:18.the type of person who will approach this from the same point. This is my

:23:19. > :23:23.last Olympics, I'm going to really put on a show and go out with a

:23:24. > :23:30.bang. And that's what he'll do. He showed us that. What he's healthy,

:23:31. > :23:34.he is basically unbeatable. You still got the run the race. The

:23:35. > :23:40.other guys will try to spoil it if they can. Nothing you can to do

:23:41. > :23:44.about Bolt. The smart thing for all the other competitors to do is to

:23:45. > :23:57.try and get a medal. Take gold out and let him have it.

:23:58. > :24:05.The world indoor champion, Trayvon Bromell. The South African record

:24:06. > :24:13.holder, 9.89. The former Olympic champion, more than a decade ago.

:24:14. > :24:19.Justin Gatlin. Still the bad boy. According to the crowd. Jimmy

:24:20. > :24:36.Vicaut, the European record holder. 9.86. Usain Bolt, the defending

:24:37. > :24:45.champion, trying to become the first athlete to win 3 consecutive medals

:24:46. > :24:51.in the same event. The African 100m champion, 9.97 this year. A new

:24:52. > :24:56.personal best. Set in the semifinal. And the return of Yohan Blake. Says

:24:57. > :25:01.he doesn't want to be known as the beast anymore, but he's still a

:25:02. > :25:10.formidable character and 1 who's coming back. But can anybody, can

:25:11. > :25:29.anybody stop Bolt? He's won six Olympic gold medals.

:25:30. > :25:48.Rebecca Gallantree... Is in lane 4. Bolt is in lane six. The Olympic

:25:49. > :25:55.Gatlin gets away well. And Bolt has left a little bit in the blocks.

:25:56. > :26:00.Gatlin is leadingment Gatlin is charging. Bolt is going to take it!

:26:01. > :26:04.Usain Bolt gets it! 9.80! A magnificent 7! The odyssey

:26:05. > :26:20.continues! Listen to the noise in Rio de

:26:21. > :26:32.Janeiro! Listen to the adulation. Look at the love for this man.

:26:33. > :26:38.Gatlin got out. He always gets out. And then, Bolt, as ever, gets those

:26:39. > :26:51.legs moving. And you cannot stop him. Irrisable force -- irresistible

:26:52. > :26:56.force. The talent recognised at such a young age, still in the legs,

:26:57. > :27:00.still in those bones. He delivers once more. I said last year at the

:27:01. > :27:05.world championships, he may have saved his sport. Well, I thought,

:27:06. > :27:10.many of us thought, coming into these Olympics, he may have to give

:27:11. > :27:19.it the kiss of life. But we've had a fantastic night in the stadium. And

:27:20. > :27:24.Bolt has just added to it in his own inintimable style. No world records,

:27:25. > :27:34.no superfast times. Just another Olympic gold medal. The triple,

:27:35. > :27:40.triple is on. What a magnificent moment for him. Of course, it was

:27:41. > :27:49.9.69 in Beijing. Many of us will remember that. 9.63 in London. The

:27:50. > :27:53.Olympic record as it stands. And today, first place with 9.81.

:27:54. > :27:58.Pleasing this whole stadium with the incredible performance. Not the best

:27:59. > :28:06.of starts. But you know what? Nobody is going to campaign. They wanted to

:28:07. > :28:12.see this man take the victory. How many times has Gatlin been running

:28:13. > :28:18.up to Usain Bolt? I think he'll be happen happy with that performance.

:28:19. > :28:21.But this whole stadium is ecstatic that this man has taken the victory.

:28:22. > :28:30.Steve, what do you think is left for him? Well, he got 2 more gold medals

:28:31. > :28:35.to win, for sure. And what I love with him is he is still looks like

:28:36. > :28:39.he really enjoys this. You could excuse a man who's doing everything,

:28:40. > :28:43.thinking, I can get myself in the best shape I can. This is his arena.

:28:44. > :28:51.This is this stage. This is what he does. He lives and breathes

:28:52. > :28:56.competing at a level which nobody else has ever done before. Winning

:28:57. > :29:01.Olympic titles, gathering them up, as though they were daisies in a

:29:02. > :29:06.field. Unbelievable and you know, for me, we often say this, Colin, I

:29:07. > :29:12.said it, I used the words earlier on about privilege to sit and watch.

:29:13. > :29:18.Sport has a lot of critics. Our sport is in some dark times. When

:29:19. > :29:22.it's at its purest, you see a talented young person, who at the

:29:23. > :29:26.age of 15 was running great times, and the physicality that this man

:29:27. > :29:31.has, coupled with the attitude, and this is the fruition of that. And

:29:32. > :29:36.this is what the sport can still deliver. And we shouldn't forget

:29:37. > :29:42.that. We shouldn't forget this is what can be done. This is what can

:29:43. > :29:47.be achieved and look at the impact it has here, and look automatic

:29:48. > :29:53.around the world. You mention around the world, this man is just a

:29:54. > :29:57.Jamaican. And making 3 million people on the island of Jamaica so

:29:58. > :30:01.proud in this moment in time. As a nation, they truly believe they are

:30:02. > :30:03.the fastest. And I can assure you, once again, here at these

:30:04. > :30:20.championships, people. There are Olympians who are

:30:21. > :30:27.heroic. I am struggling for words for him. He is almost God-like. They

:30:28. > :30:32.would name him the God of Speed or something. It is difficult to

:30:33. > :30:37.explain to people. Colin, he does carry the expectations on his

:30:38. > :30:42.shoulder of everybody. We are sitting here and it is rammed

:30:43. > :30:46.because even sometimes the media, we can be cynical about things. They

:30:47. > :30:49.all want to come and watch and be here tonight because this is what

:30:50. > :30:53.the Olympics is about. He pit mices it more than anything else. I love

:30:54. > :30:58.it. I love being here. I love watching him. He mess mer is the

:30:59. > :31:02.crowd, doesn't he? On and off the track, he is the main man. As you

:31:03. > :31:07.said, this crowd gets pleased with everything that he does. What ever

:31:08. > :31:14.he chooses to do, he has followers. We are so lucky in this world to

:31:15. > :31:18.have this man who transcends our sport and pulls in fans that you

:31:19. > :31:24.never ever believe would love our sport. This man manages to do that.

:31:25. > :31:28.Every time he steps on that track, he proves it time and time and time

:31:29. > :31:34.again that he is great for many reasons, but this is certainly the

:31:35. > :31:38.one. Out of the blocks and not as sharp as in the semifinal. He keeps

:31:39. > :31:43.a cool head all the way. He hauls himself through and he takes that

:31:44. > :31:48.victory with, I think, what is a very iconically, when he touches his

:31:49. > :31:53.chest, that kind of says, "All right, guys. You try. You work hard.

:31:54. > :31:58.I am still your main man." He crosses that line and that little

:31:59. > :32:02.pat on his chest. "Boom, that is me. You still have some time to take me

:32:03. > :32:08.out." Brilliant. Here he is, Steve. What are you thinking? I was going

:32:09. > :32:13.to ask you a question. Do you think at any point Gatlin thought he was

:32:14. > :32:18.going to win this. You know that he knows what is happening and he ran

:32:19. > :32:21.9.8 which is what he ran in the American trials. It would have been

:32:22. > :32:27.even closer than this. In the end, it wasn't that close. I think now if

:32:28. > :32:31.I am honest he doesn't believe he can boat Usain any more. There was a

:32:32. > :32:37.time when he thought he could just have it on him but not anymore. You

:32:38. > :32:43.sane has proved time and time again. In the warm-up zone, the runners are

:32:44. > :32:47.like peacocks. They are always showing their waves and this man

:32:48. > :32:50.will be the biggest peacock there. He will be showing absolutely

:32:51. > :32:57.everything and saying to everybody, "No way is it going to be yours."

:32:58. > :33:03.Michael Johnson is upstairs and I am sure you appreciate this man's

:33:04. > :33:08.performance? Absolutely, Steve. That was a fantastic performance by Usain

:33:09. > :33:14.Bolt. He slowed down and said, "I have got this." It is not about the

:33:15. > :33:19.time. It is only about winning his third consecutive Olympic 100 metre

:33:20. > :33:23.crown and going out on top, finishing off my 100 metre Olympic

:33:24. > :33:28.career three times gold medallist. I thought as well that I didn't expect

:33:29. > :33:35.the race to unfold the way that it did. Bolt, I expected to see a bit

:33:36. > :33:40.of the older Bolt which by 30-40 metres have already caught up and he

:33:41. > :33:45.was down significantly. Gatlin got a great start but it was always within

:33:46. > :33:47.his reach because this wasn't the injured Bolt coming in to these

:33:48. > :33:51.championships like last year. This is a healthy Usain Bolt. When he is

:33:52. > :33:56.healthy, he can do what ever he needs to do. He got out of his drive

:33:57. > :34:00.and said, "That wasn't very good. My start wasn't great. My drive wasn't

:34:01. > :34:05.good. I can still catch anybody within a metre or two metres of me."

:34:06. > :34:10.That is exactly what he did. I have to agree with you completely, Steve.

:34:11. > :34:15.This guy has been amazing for the sport. When he first came inin 2008

:34:16. > :34:20.people said all of the antics, he is not a gracious champion, but I said

:34:21. > :34:26.then, it is authentic. It is who he is. He loves to entertain and I

:34:27. > :34:30.think that over these last eight years people have really seen that

:34:31. > :34:34.he is fantastic for the sport. He loves the sport. He loves the fans

:34:35. > :34:38.and he loves the crowd and he loves to perform for them. He has just

:34:39. > :34:43.been fantastic for the sport, as you said, Steve. The sport has been

:34:44. > :34:48.through some significant challenges of late, but Usain Bolt has been an

:34:49. > :34:52.amazing ambassador for this sport, drawing in fans from around the

:34:53. > :34:56.world and really creating not only for himself, but a brand for the

:34:57. > :35:01.Jamaican track athletes. Any time one of them comes out into the

:35:02. > :35:08.stadium, the crowds just go wild and they go crazy for the green and

:35:09. > :35:14.yellow. He has inspired an amazing amount of young Jamaican sprinters

:35:15. > :35:19.that we see now. Elaine won the 100m, I am sure inspired by Usain

:35:20. > :35:22.Bolt. This has been amazing. We have seen over the years young ja nay can

:35:23. > :35:27.athletes with a tremendous amount of talent but never able to get to the

:35:28. > :35:30.championship level and they had been inspired and motivated by Usain Bolt

:35:31. > :35:36.and what he has done in this sport and now we have so many other

:35:37. > :35:38.Jamaican champions. There he is with his iconic pose and the crowd goes

:35:39. > :35:54.wild! Amazing stuff from Usain Bolt! Yes, Michael, while you were talking

:35:55. > :36:00.there, we were watching those great pictures and selfie with the

:36:01. > :36:04.heptathletes. I am panicking. I am thinking, "Get off there. Don't

:36:05. > :36:09.fall. You have got the 200 and the relay." But, as you were saying, he

:36:10. > :36:13.can help himself. I agree wholeheartedly, as I said before,

:36:14. > :36:20.this is his stage. This is what he loves doing. It is his way of doing

:36:21. > :36:28.it and we are all thankful for it. Let's clear up. Gatlin was second.

:36:29. > :36:35.The winning time 9.81, Justin Gatlin the silver medallist. He has a full

:36:36. > :36:41.set. Bronze, silver and gold. 9.89 and Andre De Grasse getting on the

:36:42. > :36:47.Ross stram again 9.91, a bronze medal for Canada. What an incredible

:36:48. > :36:54.30 minutes of athletics we have all been treated to. If you have stayed

:36:55. > :36:59.up for it, well done, you. You have lived through history. This is the

:37:00. > :37:03.end of an era. This is the last time we will see him at an Olympic Games.

:37:04. > :37:07.H looks as fresh and motivated and as energetic and as joyous as he

:37:08. > :37:11.ever does. There is nothingvaded about this man and nothing fake

:37:12. > :37:16.about this man. This is for real. This comes from inside. He

:37:17. > :37:16.absolutely adores what he due. He loves being the showman.

:37:17. > :37:20.LAUGHS .

:37:21. > :37:24.CHEERING Listen, I know Steve was worried

:37:25. > :37:28.about him getting hurt over there. He got taken out by a segway in

:37:29. > :37:33.Beijing. Nothing could be worse than that. He thinks it is safer to walk

:37:34. > :37:39.on the outer ring, Denise, than spend time on the track. He is

:37:40. > :37:43.loving it. He is loving it. I am sure people are loving it. People

:37:44. > :37:52.have stayed up just solely for this man. They are chanting. It is almost

:37:53. > :37:56.like ancient Rome, they have been chanting for the star, the main

:37:57. > :37:59.Prague tagnist, as you call him. I think she's been so incredible and

:38:00. > :38:03.it has been a privilege just watching how he's grown through the

:38:04. > :38:10.sport and the people that he's brought along with him. Being there

:38:11. > :38:15.for his big mopes and your girl got a tasty selfie there. Jessica

:38:16. > :38:20.Ennis-Hill and Kim Brennan managed to collar him and get that picture.

:38:21. > :38:25.She may be a hero and goddess herself but she is a Usain fan. The

:38:26. > :38:32.fact that they switched the medal ceremony to today, she never gets to

:38:33. > :38:38.see that. The fact she has got a front-row seat. The crowd should be

:38:39. > :38:43.shouting "four more years". Why can't Bolt? You seem to be accepting

:38:44. > :38:47.his retirement and saying that Jess shouldn't sort of thing. We need to

:38:48. > :38:52.be pushing this man. I think we will see him in London. He hasn't said he

:38:53. > :38:57.has retired yet. He said it is the last Olympics. Here we go, though.

:38:58. > :39:01.The start from Warren Gatland was impressive, Michael? Gatlin did get

:39:02. > :39:06.a great start. He knew he would have to. He got a great start last year

:39:07. > :39:11.and then made the mistake. I think that Gatlin knew, though, that this

:39:12. > :39:15.was not going - it wasn't going to happen when Usain is healthy. When

:39:16. > :39:19.he is healthy, he is unbeatable. Ghat got did the smart thing and

:39:20. > :39:23.wept out there to run the best he could and make sure he got himself a

:39:24. > :39:27.silver medal and at the end of the day when he looks back at his career

:39:28. > :39:31.having competed at the same times a Usain Bolt, that is as good as it

:39:32. > :39:35.was ever going to get. He wasn't ever going to be able to beat Usain

:39:36. > :39:39.Bolt. I don't think he felt he could ever beat a healthy Usain Bolt.

:39:40. > :39:44.There were opportunities when Bolt wasn't at his bestor the years and

:39:45. > :39:51.he could beat him. He could dance on the stage but never be the prima

:39:52. > :39:56.ballerina, Denise. Yes. He was worried last year, being not as

:39:57. > :39:59.healthy as we have seen him, maybe he's taken his training more

:40:00. > :40:03.seriously going through the off season, the winter months, the

:40:04. > :40:09.preparation of getting himself ready because the margins have got close

:40:10. > :40:14.over the years. They are only closer because he hasn't been as healthy.

:40:15. > :40:19.As he's got older he has had to make adjustments in his training. His

:40:20. > :40:23.back is worse. He's got a slight scoliosis and he's always had to

:40:24. > :40:27.manage that. He said he had to manage that much better, he told me

:40:28. > :40:31.a few weeks ago. That is what happens when you get older as a

:40:32. > :40:35.sprinter, you stop focusing on how can I push the training today to be

:40:36. > :40:40.better and faster and you focus on, how can I manage the training better

:40:41. > :40:43.and get a good training session in but remain healthy? When that starts

:40:44. > :40:50.to happen, it is not as much fun anymore. I think he feels, hey, I

:40:51. > :40:54.want to finish it up. He has said he would go to 2016, maybe 2017, but

:40:55. > :40:58.that would be it. Because managing that body is so, so tough. I want to

:40:59. > :41:04.talk to you about his - look at that. A beautiful moment with Wayde

:41:05. > :41:10.Van Niekerk. You said they trained together. He knew how fast the 200

:41:11. > :41:14.metre was. He is giving him the seal of approval. Fantastic work. We have

:41:15. > :41:20.got excited fans outside the studio. I don't know if you can hear them. I

:41:21. > :41:23.don't know if they are fans of Tony Minichiello or Michael Johnson or

:41:24. > :41:28.Usain Bolt. They will storm the studio soon if we are not careful.

:41:29. > :41:33.The make-up of Usain Bolt - I have respond to doctors and scientists

:41:34. > :41:37.and as far as we can go as human beings and they said he is perfectly

:41:38. > :41:42.proportions and there is something unique about his make-up that has

:41:43. > :41:46.allowed him to dominate and, Steve mentioned it, the constant stream

:41:47. > :41:51.that started as a young kid. He didn't just burst in to the scene at

:41:52. > :41:56.22. When he did come onto the scene initially we saw that he was

:41:57. > :42:00.special. He is 6ft 6 inches tall, which ordinarily is not great for

:42:01. > :42:04.100m sprinting because the start has become so important in that race.

:42:05. > :42:09.The powerful, quick start out of the blocks. Once you can get up into

:42:10. > :42:17.your running, that long stride can be an advantage if you go back to

:42:18. > :42:21.Carl Lewis 6' 3 and Linford Christie around 6' 3. Those athletes would

:42:22. > :42:24.come through in the end. Usain Bolt being even taller, you would think

:42:25. > :42:29.he would need 120 metres to come into his own. What he is able to do

:42:30. > :42:33.that most of his height can't do is he is able to cycle through from the

:42:34. > :42:39.beginning in such a way that it is almost like he cycles like he is

:42:40. > :42:44.fifth 9 but he is 6' 6 so he can take advantage of both. He want

:42:45. > :42:48.erget a great start but he is not as far down -- The start has gotten

:42:49. > :42:53.better, though. It has got better. Remember it used to be all over his

:42:54. > :42:58.place. It never will be the best because of his height. He doesn't

:42:59. > :43:01.have the give up as much grounder the first 30 metres as normally

:43:02. > :43:03.someone that height would be. He takes advantage of the long stride

:43:04. > :43:05.later, but he is very quick takes advantage of the long stride

:43:06. > :43:05.later, but he is very quick for someone

:43:06. > :43:08.takes advantage of the long stride later, but he is very quick for

:43:09. > :43:12.someone with long limbs. A big gear is always slower, but he is able to

:43:13. > :43:17.take the big gear and use it as a big gear when you need the big gear

:43:18. > :43:20.and use it like a small gear when you need the small gear. That is

:43:21. > :43:24.amazing. Nobody can do that. He ask with all of the other athletes

:43:25. > :43:29.except for Warren Gatlandnt normally for someone 6ft 6 I would expect him

:43:30. > :43:33.to be behind everyone else at the start. He doesn't give up much at

:43:34. > :43:37.the beginning of the race and that is his advantage. He is just very

:43:38. > :43:43.quick. Simply it, he is very quick for someone who is very tall and

:43:44. > :43:48.that is odd. That is not normal, in terms of the history of the event.

:43:49. > :43:53.100m or 200m. At what point then do you think as a kid, somebody -

:43:54. > :43:57.coaches presumably know all of that and they see a tall kid and think

:43:58. > :44:05.maybe 400 or 800. Somebody said, "No, we can make you a 100 kneer

:44:06. > :44:09.runner." After 20o 8, we train athletes that Michael Johnson

:44:10. > :44:15.Performance and All Sports, after 2008 we started to get calls from

:44:16. > :44:20.people saying, "I got a 6ft 6 inch sprinter." Just because you are 6ft

:44:21. > :44:24.6 doesn't mean you can sprint like Usain Bolt. He is very unique. He's

:44:25. > :44:28.in a unique position and a unique individual and those people come

:44:29. > :44:32.along every new and then and there will be another one who will be you

:44:33. > :44:37.neck in a different sort of way that calls into question what all of the

:44:38. > :44:41.historians of athletics and historians of sport thought they

:44:42. > :44:46.knew and then we have to start all over again like Usain Bolt made us

:44:47. > :44:50.do. The next 6ft 6 sprinter hasn't yet emerged. Shall we take a trip

:44:51. > :44:55.down memory lane, Denise, and remind ourself from 28008. This is his

:44:56. > :45:04.third Olympic gold medal. Let's relieve the great man in Beijing in

:45:05. > :45:08.2008. They get away at first time. Powell has got a good start. Here

:45:09. > :45:13.comes Usain Bolt. Bolt streaking away from the field. It will be gold

:45:14. > :45:19.for Jamaica. That is superb. It is a new world record!

:45:20. > :45:26.Bolt not very quickly out of the blocks. Bolt is getting into his

:45:27. > :45:33.stride alongside Gatlin. Usain Bolt is pulling away and he will win the

:45:34. > :45:40.gold. 9.64. The champion becomes a legend!

:45:41. > :45:45.Gatlin gets away well and Bolt left a little bit in the blocks. Gatlin

:45:46. > :45:50.is leading at the moment. Warren Gatland is charging, but here comes

:45:51. > :45:54.Usain Bolt and Bolt will take it. Usain Bolt gets it 9.80. A

:45:55. > :46:03.magnificent 7. The odyssey continues. How do you even begin to

:46:04. > :46:06.put a night like tonight into words. The crowd chanting your name, a gold

:46:07. > :46:10.medal, another piece of history. It was brilliant. I am really happy. I

:46:11. > :46:15.expected to go foster, but I think the time was so quick to come back

:46:16. > :46:20.out. As soon as we got in I had to come back out so I think that is why

:46:21. > :46:23.I didn't run faster. I am happy I won and that is the key thing. Tell

:46:24. > :46:29.me about the start. Justin Gatlin coming out being booed. We don't

:46:30. > :46:35.normally hear that and euphoric cheers for you. I was surprised. It

:46:36. > :46:39.is the first time I have ever heard boosting. It was shocking for me,

:46:40. > :46:44.but I didn't care about. That I was here to do what I had to de. Now you

:46:45. > :46:50.have done it. You don't get nervous for the 100 but more for the 200.

:46:51. > :46:54.You seemed nervous? After the semifinals I felt extremely good. As

:46:55. > :46:58.I said, I wanted to run faster, the turn around time they gave us. We

:46:59. > :47:03.only got an hour and 20 minutes. Usually we get two hours. We didn't

:47:04. > :47:07.get any time to rest and get our feet up and the lactic acid. I had

:47:08. > :47:11.to come back out. This is why it is challenging but this is what we

:47:12. > :47:16.train for. The triple treble still on? Of course. I know that London

:47:17. > :47:19.means a lot to you and Britain means a lot to you. Stanawayford

:47:20. > :47:24.supporter, I total you I would do it. Stay tuned. Two more to go.

:47:25. > :47:29.Thank you. Thank you very much. His media commitments will go on and on

:47:30. > :47:32.and on. He will be probably interviewed well into tomorrow's

:47:33. > :47:38.breakfast. He is so in demand and this is why. Steve Cram said it in

:47:39. > :47:43.commentary, the magnificent seven and, wow. They are the Olympic

:47:44. > :47:48.medals. You can add a load more from World Championships. He's on for 9

:47:49. > :47:56.here. It would be some feat, Denise, and probably never in our lifetime

:47:57. > :48:00.to be matched. I don't think so. The trouble trouble is on. Is it

:48:01. > :48:04.possible that someone can sound even more confident? We have heard him

:48:05. > :48:08.talk before, but this year it has been staggering how you just believe

:48:09. > :48:13.that he's going to get that triple. It is just incredible. I have no

:48:14. > :48:18.doubt that he is going to achieve it. None whatsoever. Anybody's

:48:19. > :48:23.challenging him in the 200 for you? No, no-one will challenge him. That

:48:24. > :48:27.would be the biggest challenge, the 100m. In the 200m, no-one can run

:48:28. > :48:32.with him. He doesn't have the fastest time. Lashawn Merritt has a

:48:33. > :48:36.very fast time 19.74, but I don't think that anyone can run with him.

:48:37. > :48:41.That will have given him a lot more confidence as well. He ran 19.89 at

:48:42. > :48:45.the Anniversary Games. He was ragged at that point and admittedly so

:48:46. > :48:51.after coming off the injury and a break in training. He is probably

:48:52. > :48:57.good for 19.6, 19.5. Maybe even 19.4 and no-one el in this field can run

:48:58. > :49:01.that fast. It is a few days in but it feels like a very special

:49:02. > :49:08.athletics meet within these Olympic Games and feels like an end of an

:49:09. > :49:17.era for many people because with Bolt, end of an Olympic era for

:49:18. > :49:21.Jess. How did she say it? The pumpkin is going to turn into the

:49:22. > :49:27.Vin KAREN: Or was it the other way around. The Vin table car was

:49:28. > :49:31.turning into the pumpkin. That sounds much better this does feel

:49:32. > :49:35.very, very nostalgic being here, Tony? I think the 2016, as we are

:49:36. > :49:36.seeing as we go through the calendar, is a year of

:49:37. > :49:37.seeing as we go through the calendar, is a year of great change.

:49:38. > :49:42.seeing as we go through the calendar, is a year of great change.

:49:43. > :49:45.In every walk of life. Maybe it is that watershed moment. We are going

:49:46. > :49:50.to see some changes here. There are now, we have seen from the men's 400

:49:51. > :49:53.metres, we are starting to see new people emerge. New personalities and

:49:54. > :50:00.the public will get interested in those people and find out more. And

:50:01. > :50:01.it was the end of an era for one long-standing world record tonight

:50:02. > :50:13.as well. Off they go. Lashawn Merritt will

:50:14. > :50:20.staur them down and hunt them down. Kirani James with that loose-limited

:50:21. > :50:25.style carrying up to the shoulder of Hudson-Smith. No-one outside except

:50:26. > :50:30.for the roar of the crowd. Lashawn Merritt so close to Kirani James

:50:31. > :50:34.already. It surely is between these three. Matthew Hudson-Smith a long

:50:35. > :50:41.way back with the rest. Cedenio is trying to get there. It is these

:50:42. > :50:45.three men. Van Niekerk has gone out quickly. Can he hold on? Three men

:50:46. > :50:48.and the gold medal is waiting for one, but Van Niekerk is going

:50:49. > :50:58.further clear. Kirani James and Merritt tied up. Van Niekerk takes

:50:59. > :51:02.it and it is a new world record! 43.03 extraordinary inside the

:51:03. > :51:07.Olympic Stadium in Rio de Janeiro! Michael Johnson's record has gone.

:51:08. > :51:21.Olympic gold and the fastest 400 metres of all time. Bad timing. You

:51:22. > :51:25.are winding me up. It is ironic that I sat next to you when your 200

:51:26. > :51:31.metre record was broken by Usain Bolt in Beijing. You are bad luck

:51:32. > :51:35.for me. I am feeling that. For all of the cynicism and cbt cynicism

:51:36. > :51:39.when it comes to mass doping and institutionalised doping and we have

:51:40. > :51:42.got other issues going on in the sport and one we will talk about

:51:43. > :51:47.this week, this trading of athletes to countries, they are being bought

:51:48. > :51:52.by countries. The nuts and bolts of this sport is who can run the

:51:53. > :51:56.fastest? Who can jump the highest? It is the most simple beautiful

:51:57. > :51:59.sport in that respect. Children are attracted to that when they enter

:52:00. > :52:03.into sport because it is straightforward and simple to do.

:52:04. > :52:07.Adults want to look and say, who is the fastest? Tonight we have seen

:52:08. > :52:13.the beautiful element of athletics at it purest almost. We have. As

:52:14. > :52:16.Tony said, it is a fantastic time for the sport from a performance

:52:17. > :52:20.stand point. Unfortunately, on the other side of that, the sport has a

:52:21. > :52:25.huge credibility problem. I mean, I was just speaking with someone the

:52:26. > :52:28.other day and they were talking about world records and someone

:52:29. > :52:33.breaks the world record is there is doubt. The objective of the sport is

:52:34. > :52:38.to run faster. The only way to keep people from suspecting you is to run

:52:39. > :52:42.slower, the sport has a huge problem. That is not the objective

:52:43. > :52:46.of the sport. That is a problem. The IAAF will have to get a handle on

:52:47. > :52:49.this and restore credibility in the sport otherwise people like Wayde

:52:50. > :52:53.Van Niekerk and all of these new kids that we have coming up that are

:52:54. > :52:59.producing fantastic competitions for us, are - it is an injustice to them

:53:00. > :53:04.that they cannot the tloi and not have people question -- thrive and

:53:05. > :53:06.not have people question when they go and deliver a fantastic

:53:07. > :53:10.performance and people can't celebrate that and say, you, that

:53:11. > :53:13.was fantastic to see. When the question marks come up, that is not

:53:14. > :53:17.the fault of the athletes, it is the fault of the sport in federation

:53:18. > :53:21.that are not doing the job they need to do to keep this work clean and

:53:22. > :53:24.keep credibility in the sport. It is really sad for the athletes when

:53:25. > :53:27.they happens. And you mentioned Wayde Van Niekerk. There is a pobtty

:53:28. > :53:32.for the sport, a man who could fill some very big shoes. Usain Bolt will

:53:33. > :53:36.be leaving centre stage soon. They need to build the characters around

:53:37. > :53:42.the sport who can hope to fill those very, very large shoes. You know,

:53:43. > :53:45.when I looked Ativan van earlier this year and even before he broke

:53:46. > :53:51.the world record, I thought this is a guy with talent at 100, 200 and

:53:52. > :53:56.400. We saw that with Allison Felix. I so wanted her to run the 400.

:53:57. > :54:01.Double up. I want to see Wayde Van Niekerk. He has broken a world

:54:02. > :54:05.record in the 400 metres. Let's see some 200m at the championship level.

:54:06. > :54:07.You can't be the first person to win the championship -- Who did that? I

:54:08. > :54:07.have forgotten. LAUGHS

:54:08. > :54:13.. LAUGHS

:54:14. > :54:17.. That will allow him to emerge as the next star of the sport which the

:54:18. > :54:21.sport needs and that feels like a guy who will fill those shoes and it

:54:22. > :54:27.seems like a grat guy who people will love and love to rally around.

:54:28. > :54:30.Phil caught up with him after his incredible gold medal

:54:31. > :54:35.world-record-winning performance. Wayde you carried the flag into the

:54:36. > :54:40.opening ceremony for South Africa and you have got a gold medal in

:54:41. > :54:43.world record time. Life can't get any better than this? I have dreamed

:54:44. > :54:49.of this since I was a little kid. The only thing I can do right now is

:54:50. > :54:54.give God praise. I went on my knees each and every day and I told the

:54:55. > :54:59.Lord to take care of me. I wrote it on my spikes tonight. I asked the

:55:00. > :55:02.Lord to carry me through. I am blessed and grateful for this

:55:03. > :55:08.opportunity. Did you honestly believe a world record was within

:55:09. > :55:11.you? I believed it, yes. It was very challenging competition and anything

:55:12. > :55:16.was possible. I am just glad things went my way tonight. We have Michael

:55:17. > :55:20.Johnson in our studio up there. Do you have a message for Michael, as I

:55:21. > :55:23.am sure - he sends his congratulations back down to you. I

:55:24. > :55:28.thank him for leading the example for each and every one of us and for

:55:29. > :55:32.setting out such a great example for us and I just went out there and did

:55:33. > :55:37.my best tonight. Finally, let me ask you, you have stayed around to watch

:55:38. > :55:42.Usain Bolt win his gold medal and we are wondering in the sport, who is

:55:43. > :55:46.next? Who is the next star to take on the mantle from Bolt when he

:55:47. > :55:51.retires? The mantle Mitt fall on your shoulders. Are you comfortable

:55:52. > :55:54.with it? I am blessed to be surrounded by such great sports

:55:55. > :55:57.people of my generation. I am guessed to be where I am today.

:55:58. > :56:02.Thank you. A truly wonderful performance. Thank you. They are big

:56:03. > :56:06.shoes to fill. What a lovely reaction to what he said about you

:56:07. > :56:10.and the kind of gauntlet you have threaten down for everybody to

:56:11. > :56:16.chase. We had a bit of a Twitter exchange over the last couple of

:56:17. > :56:19.years and he's been very appreciative and obviously a good

:56:20. > :56:23.kid there who deserves that with all of the hard work he's put in. It is

:56:24. > :56:27.tough. When you talk about people who have amazing talent and

:56:28. > :56:31.potential and he's had that, it is tough for realise that and even

:56:32. > :56:35.does. Realise it. As an athlete you always know that I could end up not

:56:36. > :56:39.ever realising this potential and that would be a shame. I am sure he

:56:40. > :56:43.will over the next few days be ecstatic about the fact that people

:56:44. > :56:48.have told him over the years that "you have the ability and the talent

:56:49. > :56:51.to be an Olympic champion and possibly a world-record holder" and

:56:52. > :56:54.to actually go out and do that. That is what is special. Myself, it is my

:56:55. > :56:59.world record that he broke and people always said about the 200

:57:00. > :57:04.metre world record, it is a shame. Did it hurt? Was it sad when your

:57:05. > :57:09.record was broken? It is not because you always have the memory of all of

:57:10. > :57:13.the work that you did. My strength coach, my physio, all of the people

:57:14. > :57:17.who worked with me and believed I could and supported me, we worked

:57:18. > :57:22.really hard and when we finally accomplished it, it was the

:57:23. > :57:27.accomplishment that was special. I will never forget that. I will

:57:28. > :57:31.always have the memory for the 200m as well as the 400 metres having

:57:32. > :57:34.worked for years and having accomplished it. It is the

:57:35. > :57:41.accomplishment, not holding it forever that you appreciate. It is

:57:42. > :57:44.the accomplishment. Had I still been competing and someone broke my world

:57:45. > :57:47.record I would have been disappointed and wanted to get out

:57:48. > :57:52.there to get it back. Once you retire. There is nothing you can do.

:57:53. > :57:56.Nothing you can do. 74 years old, she might be taking Clints on. She

:57:57. > :58:00.sounds like a pretty special lady. There she is obviously going through

:58:01. > :58:04.some of the sessions she's got planned for Wayd erk at some point

:58:05. > :58:11.there. What a lady, Denise! What an amazing image. That is a fantastic

:58:12. > :58:17.image. We don't have enough women in the sport coaching in all around the

:58:18. > :58:21.world, but what a shining example she is. 74 years of age with an

:58:22. > :58:25.Olympic champion. And world-record holder, Tony. Wonderful to see.

:58:26. > :58:29.Across all sport, there are not enough women coaching machine, I

:58:30. > :58:32.think. That is the kind of - the crossover that we need to get. It is

:58:33. > :58:36.slightly different, I know. The critical thing is finding a coach

:58:37. > :58:39.and working with a coach where you have this relationship as you did

:58:40. > :58:43.with your coach, as in this situation as well. It is somebody

:58:44. > :58:47.who stimulates thought and who can think about the event and move on.

:58:48. > :58:52.The great thing about this young man is that the whole event, 400 metres,

:58:53. > :58:56.will probably take a step forwards. Everybody will go into this winter

:58:57. > :59:00.training and think, "I need to run 42. How am I going to do that? How

:59:01. > :59:04.will I put my training together?" You see that? You are stimulated by

:59:05. > :59:10.the athletes you see in the end and you see the move. That's why at this

:59:11. > :59:14.stage in the long jump you had Powell and Larry, they had to jump

:59:15. > :59:18.far to compete against each other. We saw that with Jonathan Edwards

:59:19. > :59:21.and the young man from Sweden at the same time. You stimulate each other.

:59:22. > :59:26.All right, the 100m might take a little step back, but the 400 people

:59:27. > :59:31.will have to find a way and coaches will have to think that little bit

:59:32. > :59:36.smarter. There have been some iconic and fantastic coaching

:59:37. > :59:41.relationships. O'Connell who coached her athlete to a world record and

:59:42. > :59:45.still coaches a plethora of athletes. Do you fancy being a

:59:46. > :59:50.coach, Denise? I could see you doing it. I do. She is inspired.

:59:51. > :59:55.LAUGHS . Let's get out and hear from Steve

:59:56. > :59:58.Backley. He is rounding up what happens in the field tonight.

:59:59. > :00:02.Understandably, we didn't get as much as we might have done because

:00:03. > :00:08.of world records being broken. Understandable, Gabby. It was great

:00:09. > :00:15.on the track. On the field, the women's triple jump came to a head

:00:16. > :00:21.in the fourth round. Rojas, 40.87 the best at this point. She did

:00:22. > :00:27.this! A big, big effort. Her second best leap of her life for the young

:00:28. > :00:29.20-year-old Venuzuelan. She's jumped over 15 metres. She did that in

:00:30. > :00:40.20-year-old Venuzuelan. She's jumped over 15 metres. She did that in

:00:41. > :00:44.Madrid earlier this year. Just short of the 15 metres was Rojas. Quick on

:00:45. > :00:47.the approach. Long of limb, used it to good effect to go a long way into

:00:48. > :01:02.the sand pit there. But it was this jump who is very

:01:03. > :01:06.vocal pre-comp saying she has only come here for the gold medal.

:01:07. > :01:16.Columbia never taken a gold before. It was silver four years ago. Na

:01:17. > :01:19.jump was enough to hold on for gold. No more improvements throughout the

:01:20. > :01:34.rest of the competition. Rojas in the last round maybe. Mind you, I

:01:35. > :01:41.should say shy of 15 metres. The world leading jump of 2016. Very

:01:42. > :01:46.authoritative. So there is the medallists. Ibarguen, the new

:01:47. > :01:57.champion. Silver converted to gold. Rojas the newcomer. Great support

:01:58. > :02:00.from the Colombians, border to the international of Brazil. A lot have

:02:01. > :02:03.travelled. It was busy and noisy down that back straight. What an

:02:04. > :02:12.evening of athletics. It was gold for Caterine Ibarguen. Here is a

:02:13. > :02:18.little look back at what happened in men's qualifying in high jump. The

:02:19. > :02:26.recently crowned silver medallist to add to his world indoor silver from

:02:27. > :02:38.2012. Grabarz going at 2.29 here. That was enough. He went into the

:02:39. > :02:47.final. He eyes it up well, stays focus and gave it the slightest of

:02:48. > :02:51.brushes on the way past. Robert Grabarz booked a place in Tuesday's

:02:52. > :02:57.final with that first-time clearance. Murray Baker, however,

:02:58. > :03:01.left it -- Chris Baker, however, left it. This is his third attempt

:03:02. > :03:06.at 2.29 to make that final. It wasn't meant to be for Chris. Chris

:03:07. > :03:09.Baker, however, left it -- Chris Baker, however, left it. This is his

:03:10. > :03:12.third attempt at 2.29 to make that final. It wasn't meant to be for

:03:13. > :03:14.Chris. Desperately disappointing for him. The bronze medallist from the

:03:15. > :03:22.European championships. So the finalists, there they are. Grabarz

:03:23. > :03:30.in amongst it. He will challenge for the medals on Tuesday in that high

:03:31. > :03:34.jump final. No major catastrophes other than disappointment for Chris

:03:35. > :03:41.Baker, but it would have been a big ask for him maybe under pressure

:03:42. > :03:47.there. Difficult competition. A lot of athletes so Chris Baker will take

:03:48. > :03:50.no part in Tuesday's final. Bronze medallist from London Robert Grabarz

:03:51. > :03:53.so that will be interesting. Is he going the be punching amongst the

:03:54. > :03:55.big jumps on Tuesday? We will see. We are just about finished here.

:03:56. > :04:01.big jumps on Tuesday? We will see. We are just about finished here. I

:04:02. > :04:05.think we have had a fairly full set. World records, history made from

:04:06. > :04:10.Usain Bolt. Tony Minichiello, when are you off? When are you leaving

:04:11. > :04:14.the Olympic party? Just a couple of days' time. I am heading back to my

:04:15. > :04:20.little girl and I will go back with Jess when she heads back for her

:04:21. > :04:23.little boy. I am sure both of you will be very emotional, the time you

:04:24. > :04:27.spent together getting ready for this. We will see what the future

:04:28. > :04:32.holds. Good luck. Thank you for coming in. You are asking a

:04:33. > :04:36.question, aren't you? Kind of. I thought I would give it one more

:04:37. > :04:42.shot. As you should. As you should. You have done a great job so far,

:04:43. > :04:46.can't you? Yeah. Answers on a postcard or something like that. We

:04:47. > :04:51.will see how we go. Denise, can you pick a highlight from tonight? Is

:04:52. > :04:56.there one, is it you sane or is it the world record? I felt comfortable

:04:57. > :05:00.that Usain was going to win. Van Niekerk for me was amazing. Really

:05:01. > :05:06.sensational. Michael? That is a tough one. That is a really tough

:05:07. > :05:10.one. I have got to go with the world record. Like Denise, I knew that

:05:11. > :05:14.Bolt would win it and it is great to see that, but to witness that world

:05:15. > :05:19.record - that was amazing to see. He is such a good kid and the way that

:05:20. > :05:23.he ran it. Real quick, as a 400 metre specialist, you want to see

:05:24. > :05:27.amazing execution and that was just unbelieve age. It was a joy to be

:05:28. > :05:32.here. I always suspected it would be tonight to see Usain Bolt run and

:05:33. > :05:35.win his last 100 metre gold medal here, three Olympics. What an

:05:36. > :05:40.incredible achievement for him. That world record has capped off what has

:05:41. > :05:43.been a phenomenal evening. Jason Mohammad over to you. Thank you,

:05:44. > :05:48.Gabby Logan. What an incredible night. Thank you for the wonderful

:05:49. > :05:52.work from our track and field team. On Usain Bolt, quickly, many sport

:05:53. > :05:58.stars after a match or event, they head down the tunnel. Not Usain

:05:59. > :06:01.Bolt. What an ambassador he is to Jamaica and to his sport. Many

:06:02. > :06:06.congratulations to the main man. Let's bring you up-to-date with what

:06:07. > :06:12.has been happening this evening. A British sports star has lit up 2016

:06:13. > :06:16.this evening, Andy Murray retaining his men's singles Olympic crown

:06:17. > :06:18.beating Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro in a four-hour, four-set

:06:19. > :06:23.thriller. Absolutely brilliant tennis. The perfect way to cap off

:06:24. > :06:28.what has been a phenomenal few weeks for the Wimbledon champion. Gold for

:06:29. > :06:34.Andy Murray. Silver to Del Potro. Bronze for Japan's Kei Nishikori who

:06:35. > :06:41.beat Rafael Nadal by the way by 2-1. It is Andy Murray who retained his

:06:42. > :06:47.Olympic crown. Wonderful scenes. Look at that embrace. They gave

:06:48. > :06:50.absolutely everything - sportsmanship at its very best.

:06:51. > :06:54.Don't forget Juan Martin del Potro has just recovered from an injury

:06:55. > :06:56.and has had a magnificent Olympics. Look at that. That is what it means.

:06:57. > :07:02.Just listen to this. CHEERING

:07:03. > :07:06.Some people say that tennis don't have a place in the Olympic Games.

:07:07. > :07:15.How wrong they are. That is what it means to be the Olympic champ.

:07:16. > :07:25.Utterly shattering for Del Potro. Of course Murray's win coming five

:07:26. > :07:30.weeks after claiming his second Wimbledon title and four years after

:07:31. > :07:35.London 2012, both men looked absolutely exhausted in that fourth

:07:36. > :07:39.set. It was a growling four-hour contest and Murray breaking down in

:07:40. > :07:53.tears, finishing off a gritty and determined Del Potro.

:07:54. > :08:24.NATIONAL ANTHEM OF GREAT BRITAIN PLAYS

:08:25. > :08:35.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Yes, Mr Murray! Gold very much suits

:08:36. > :08:40.you? Looking good, my man! And shortly after Andy Murray spoke

:08:41. > :08:47.to us. Carried flag, one flag - Josh done!

:08:48. > :08:54.Yeah -- job done! An amazing 10 days really, 10-12 days. Yeah. I was very

:08:55. > :09:01.emotionally and physically draining, that match. So, sort of... I feel a

:09:02. > :09:05.lot of just relief and - I am just tired. Tired right now! But

:09:06. > :09:10.obviously very proud to have won at gold medal. It was a partisan crowd,

:09:11. > :09:15.almost more like a Davis Cup tie? Yeah, it was amazing! He obviously -

:09:16. > :09:20.a lot of the Argentinians were here supporting him, and there was a

:09:21. > :09:27.bunch of Brits and the Brazilians were supporting me. It was very,

:09:28. > :09:31.very split. Yeah. I mean, I don't know what it was like to watch, but

:09:32. > :09:37.it felt like at the end some of the points - and the games - were really

:09:38. > :09:39.good, high quality, and - yeah. That was fitting, I think, for an

:09:40. > :09:42.Olympics final. It was exhausting to watch! I can't imagine how

:09:43. > :09:46.exhausting it was to play. At the end, was that just an outpouring of

:09:47. > :09:50.relief, of everything that's happened, over the last couple of

:09:51. > :09:56.months almost? . I don't know. I don't know exactly what it was. It

:09:57. > :10:01.was how I felt at the time. It was obviously very proud to have done

:10:02. > :10:08.it. It was a brutal match obviously. Four hours or so, and a lot of ups

:10:09. > :10:12.and downs, as well. Yeah. It's been a great few moss for me. I'm very

:10:13. > :10:16.happy with how my tennis is going obviously. Not bad to have won

:10:17. > :10:19.another gold medal. Your the first person ever to win two Olympic

:10:20. > :10:28.tennis gold medals. That is an extraordinary feat, isn't it? Um, to

:10:29. > :10:34.defend the tennis title, I think Venus and Serena have done it. It

:10:35. > :10:39.isn't an easy thing to do. I had to fight unbelievably hard to get it

:10:40. > :10:42.tonight as well. Yeah. I will enjoy this one for the next coming of

:10:43. > :10:45.days, but I am supposed to be playing in Cincinnati on

:10:46. > :10:52.Wednesday... It never stops! Yeah. Unfortunately. So, I will try and

:10:53. > :10:55.get there as early as I can, and hopefully recover a little bit over

:10:56. > :10:59.the next couple of days. Good luck in the US Open and the Davis Cup.

:11:00. > :11:04.Tonight, you were magnificent. Well done. Xeros. It was brilliant. Well

:11:05. > :11:07.done. We heard the anthem many times today. Let's remind you who the

:11:08. > :11:20.winners were. At the start of today Great Britain

:11:21. > :11:28.had never won an Olympic gymnastics gold. Now we have and Max Whitlock

:11:29. > :11:32.have one after we saw the Brit takes victory in the men's floor and

:11:33. > :11:36.pommal. He was joined on the podium by his establish team-mate for the

:11:37. > :11:45.podium Lewis Smith. A fourth Olympic medal for an emotional lad. At the

:11:46. > :11:48.velodrome, Jason Kenny took victory against Callum Skinner, an

:11:49. > :11:54.incredible fifth gold medal for the quiet man of the GB Team. That gold

:11:55. > :12:00.waits him one -- puts him one shy of Chris Hoy's record tally of six.

:12:01. > :12:08.Another chance still to come. Skinner's silver, his second medal.

:12:09. > :12:15.# use tins Rose -- Justin Rose became the first Olympic golf

:12:16. > :12:21.champion for 112 years. Then we got Nick Dempsey with the first sailing

:12:22. > :12:24.regatta, sill very, in the wind surfer. Silver surfer - a great

:12:25. > :12:32.headline! And there is another establish medal

:12:33. > :12:36.on the way in the water as Joel Scott is guaranteed gold in the

:12:37. > :12:44.men's fin. That will be confirmed in the medal race on Tuesday. And the

:12:45. > :12:51.British light heavyweight also guaranteed himself at least a

:12:52. > :12:57.bronze. The unanimous decision in tonight's quarterfinal.

:12:58. > :13:08.What an incredible day for Great Britain! What an incredible

:13:09. > :13:12.paparazzi! Andy Murray, Justin Rose, Jason Kenny, mat Whitlock. A day we

:13:13. > :13:19.will never forget - super-Saturday in 2012, how about we go for

:13:20. > :13:24.stupendous Saturday in Brazil? So... Amazing day. Five gold medals for

:13:25. > :13:28.Great Britain, but another big G for the big B. From all of us here,

:13:29. > :13:36.goodnight. Gate lain is charging. Here comes
