:00:53. > :00:57.Welcome back to the opening day of London's Olympic games. You can

:00:57. > :01:03.still pinch yourself when you say that. Everybody is still riding the

:01:03. > :01:08.quest of a wave after the beating spectacle of last night's spectacle

:01:08. > :01:15.-- Cresta away. Congratulations to Danny Boyle and his volunteer cast,

:01:15. > :01:21.boy, did you pull it off last night! 26.9 million of you at home

:01:21. > :01:25.stayed at home to watch it happen, which has given that the 541

:01:25. > :01:35.athletes the best possible send-off as they are of competition. Many of

:01:35. > :01:47.

:01:47. > :01:54.the athletes are in action on this cyclist return from Beijing without

:01:54. > :01:57.a medal, but now he has returned can he start a British gold rush?

:01:57. > :02:03.Ashley Mackenzie is the first judo competitor at the games, and we

:02:03. > :02:10.will see him later. And as ever, plenty of options about how to

:02:10. > :02:16.If you want to be immersed in the road race, they are three hours

:02:16. > :02:22.into it, it is on BBC Three that life, but our priority is to head

:02:23. > :02:27.back to Eton Dorney for more of the rowing events. Down there is a

:02:27. > :02:31.gentleman who was involved in the opening ceremony last night, and,

:02:31. > :02:36.Steve, I don't know if you have come down yet? We are all a little

:02:36. > :02:40.bit high last -- after last night. It was interesting to see you

:02:40. > :02:46.around. And a little bird told me that you'd have not taken no

:02:46. > :02:52.special trainers off since. Is that true? I got back to the hotel late

:02:52. > :02:56.last night and rumour has it I have not got them off my feet, but they

:02:56. > :03:01.did for a couple of hours, and my eyes did close a bit. It was a

:03:01. > :03:04.great night, a lot of fun. To wear the shoes tonight with the gold

:03:04. > :03:09.lace is, everyone has told me I have to wear for -- wear them for

:03:09. > :03:15.the finals day, so they make make another appearance later this week.

:03:15. > :03:21.You obviously got the call quite late. I actually knew about two and

:03:21. > :03:24.a half weeks before. Unusually for me, I kept a good secret. I was

:03:24. > :03:30.able to have a bit of running banter with Daley Thompson, which

:03:30. > :03:34.was quite a lot of fun. And Gary took it up in the studio last night

:03:34. > :03:40.as well. It was an elegant solution to who would like to the cauldron

:03:40. > :03:44.that so many of the best Olympians of all time were there at the

:03:45. > :03:48.moment of truth. It was very much that handing the bat on over. That

:03:48. > :03:53.was what the bid in Singapore was about. Just to be able to pass it

:03:53. > :03:58.on to the next generation, and that summed it up fantastically. Some of

:03:58. > :04:01.our greatest Olympic athlete literally handing on the baton to

:04:01. > :04:06.the next generation, and hopefully some of those athletes will produce

:04:07. > :04:14.the same sort of results as their mentors have. You can crack on, and

:04:14. > :04:18.I will hand the baton of presenting You were talking about Alan

:04:19. > :04:27.Campbell, and his races coming up, but for the single sculls, it has

:04:27. > :04:31.been a competitive division. We have seen the men earlier today in

:04:31. > :04:38.the double sculls, who are probably the flagship there is for the New

:04:38. > :04:44.Zealand team. But Drysdale is not far behind. In the Cox is a pair,

:04:44. > :04:48.the guys from New Zealand, but Mahe was favourite to win at four years

:04:48. > :04:54.ago and ended up with the bronze medal. So the last four years have

:04:55. > :04:59.been about getting it right. The Czech athlete has won the World

:04:59. > :05:01.Championships a couple of times, but Mahe is the main guy and want

:05:01. > :05:05.the championships last year and is desperate to have this Olympic

:05:05. > :05:15.title. He has been thinking about this for four years, and here is

:05:15. > :05:38.

:05:38. > :05:44.men's singles sculls, and what a Drysdale. A couple of weeks ago he

:05:44. > :05:47.was knocked off a bike in training, so he had 10 days out and his

:05:48. > :05:52.shoulder was strapped up, and unfortunately as he went round a

:05:52. > :05:58.roundabout, not particularly quickly, but he has had an unlucky

:05:58. > :06:03.run into the Olympic games. In 2080 got food poisoning while he was in

:06:03. > :06:07.the Olympic Village -- in 2008 he got food poisoning. He was very

:06:07. > :06:11.disappointed on that occasion not to get the gold medal that everyone

:06:11. > :06:17.was anticipating, and with the road accident this time round, the world

:06:17. > :06:21.was on the edge of its seat to see how he would do. He has come back,

:06:21. > :06:26.and what amiss that - statement he is making. The romance of all of

:06:26. > :06:31.this would be if the Norwegian defended his title again, as he did

:06:31. > :06:36.four years ago in Beijing. It is not going to happen. He is not the

:06:36. > :06:41.man he was. I think he is just glad to be here, and if he can make the

:06:41. > :06:48.final, he will be happy. But at the moment he is trailing a long way

:06:48. > :06:53.back. He has got past Egypt, but he has got past. Mahe is not easing up.

:06:53. > :07:01.He is sculling better than I have ever seen him do. He is really well

:07:01. > :07:11.with his connection. Only 500 metres remaining, and a sensational

:07:11. > :07:11.

:07:11. > :07:16.gap. The defending champion after in this event from Norway. This

:07:16. > :07:20.would be a good opener. It will open up the lungs of Mahe Drysdale.

:07:20. > :07:25.He will know he has to qualify a direct into the quarter-final, but

:07:25. > :07:30.he has plenty of time to use this almost as a training peace. He can

:07:30. > :07:38.put his body under pressure, both in terms of pain and what his

:07:38. > :07:41.shoulder can really sustain while keeping good technique. He will

:07:41. > :07:45.note that the pairs went and wrote the world's best time by four

:07:45. > :07:48.seconds, and he is probably thinking at the back of his mind

:07:48. > :07:54.that it is great conditions, and he can have a go at this. He is not

:07:54. > :08:02.letting up at all. He's pushing very hard. He is sculling well,

:08:02. > :08:05.much better connection. He has corrected the problem with his

:08:05. > :08:10.technique, and he is connecting much better with his lower back. He

:08:10. > :08:17.is coming up to the grandstand, going very well indeed. He seems to

:08:17. > :08:21.have eased off a little bit. Long, sweeping strokes. 150 metres from

:08:21. > :08:26.the line. I don't think it will be a world best, but if it is he will

:08:26. > :08:30.have done exceptionally well. He has done a job over the Norwegian,

:08:30. > :08:35.the defending Olympic champion. But he will know that his shoulder is

:08:35. > :08:41.in pretty good stead. A little look to the left for the line that he

:08:41. > :08:48.will sense he is coming up to. And he comes right down, mate Drysdale,

:08:48. > :08:51.he is back, and in what style he has done in -- Mahe Drysdale! He

:08:51. > :08:58.waits for the Olympic champion to come up to the line, and over he

:08:58. > :09:08.goes now. Getting the second qualification spot. For the

:09:08. > :09:11.

:09:11. > :09:17.their feet, and they are delighted with that performance from Mahe

:09:17. > :09:21.Drysdale. Perhaps relief, really, that he is back and looking good

:09:22. > :09:31.and the New Zealand crowds out there know that they have a strong

:09:32. > :09:32.

:09:32. > :09:36.men's coxless pair and may have an The Olympic qualification rules

:09:36. > :09:44.have changed over the years, so the days of Eddie the Eagle have gone

:09:44. > :09:51.forever, and it is not really fair, but the Nigerian, who came here an

:09:51. > :09:56.awful long time after the rest. Maybe it is the winning, not the

:09:56. > :10:00.taking part. The 35-year-old from Nigeria. I don't imagine the entire

:10:00. > :10:08.budget of the Nigerian Rowing Federation amounts to a great male

:10:08. > :10:12.-- great deal, but good on him to be here. If anybody wants to talk

:10:12. > :10:17.about the sport being elitist, there is the proof that it is not.

:10:17. > :10:21.It is good to see him in some way. But that is a long way back. Mahe

:10:21. > :10:28.1-over the reigning Olympic champion and then obviously a very

:10:28. > :10:32.long way back to Nigeria. Would you allow him in? I would like to see

:10:32. > :10:37.open entries. They should not be restrictions in some ways. I know

:10:37. > :10:39.why there are, because being involved in trying to bring the

:10:39. > :10:43.games to the country is the organisers need to know how many

:10:43. > :10:49.beds they are catering for, how much food to get in, and the

:10:49. > :10:54.Transport and all that side of it. You have got to be encouraging more

:10:54. > :10:57.countries to get involved, but there are better scholars from

:10:57. > :11:02.different countries not allowed to compete because of the limited

:11:02. > :11:06.numbers you have got. We can perhaps return to that at some

:11:06. > :11:11.point over the next week. Mahe dry cell looking hugely impressive in

:11:11. > :11:15.his seat and now we will see Alan Campbell's race after a word from

:11:15. > :11:21.the man himself. A lot of things going on this season. There is a

:11:21. > :11:26.lot of things in terms of pressure with it being the Olympics, but I

:11:26. > :11:34.spent seven years doing the singles and will have a sudden I had to

:11:34. > :11:39.look at a double, and in some ways it was an opportunity. But when I

:11:39. > :11:43.said I wanted to stick with the singles it did not come out as the

:11:43. > :11:48.most popular decision. I got a bit rough up and things were going on

:11:48. > :11:54.outside of the boat instead of me being focused on the technique and

:11:54. > :12:01.everything else. I thought I really had to prove myself every time I

:12:01. > :12:06.went out to race. It really took its toll, during those World Cups.

:12:06. > :12:14.But now I've brought it back inside the boat and focused on myself or

:12:14. > :12:18.how I am at moving the boat and on what makes me feel good. We have

:12:18. > :12:24.had a very good camp at altitude here, and I definitely feel much,

:12:24. > :12:28.much better. If anything I feel more energetic and I have all year.

:12:28. > :12:34.What I have got to do is keep my mind focused on getting into that

:12:34. > :12:38.final. As soon as I am in that final, not in an arrogant way, a

:12:38. > :12:42.lot of it will take care of itself. There is nothing else that you can

:12:42. > :12:52.do. There is no more training to be done. There are no more

:12:52. > :13:00.

:13:00. > :13:10.conversations to be had. It is just races for the final will be intense

:13:10. > :13:45.

:13:45. > :13:55.the start four years ago at the go. He knows he faces the biggest

:13:55. > :14:08.

:14:08. > :14:18.task of his athletic career -- Alan Only three will go through to the

:14:18. > :14:26.

:14:26. > :14:32.quarter-final. Oh real big event for Alan Campbell.

:14:32. > :14:41.He got the silver medal in the world championships and in the last

:14:42. > :14:51.few years he has got bronze medals. He finished 4th at Lucerne this

:14:52. > :14:56.

:14:56. > :15:01.year. Pushed out by the Cuban sculler on that occasion.

:15:01. > :15:08.He had a bad performance at Munich when he got pushed back into third

:15:08. > :15:17.position. He approached that race without his usual attack and got a

:15:17. > :15:23.bit caught out. He is by far the fastest sculler in this heat. And

:15:23. > :15:32.he will now be relaxing, just powering along. Preparing for the

:15:32. > :15:39.quarter-finals. He will qualify for the quarter-finals in as strong a

:15:39. > :15:49.condition as he possibly can. There was no expectation that he

:15:49. > :15:52.

:15:52. > :16:02.would do anything but go clear in the first 500.

:16:02. > :16:02.

:16:02. > :16:09.This one will be just about getting the nerves out of the way.

:16:09. > :16:16.The team arrived last Tuesday. This is the home course, they are well

:16:16. > :16:24.acquainted with it. Alan Campbell is a man on a mission. He can be

:16:24. > :16:30.somewhat erratic. It is whether it psychologically he can really keep

:16:30. > :16:35.it together. He has worked really hard on getting the middle section

:16:35. > :16:45.powerful and effective Sophie does not expend quite so much in the

:16:45. > :16:52.first part of the race. -- so he does not. But he has not paced

:16:53. > :17:00.himself all Motherwell. Here he does not have to worry, he can just

:17:00. > :17:10.practice. Steady, powerful sculling. What do you think of his technique

:17:10. > :17:19.

:17:20. > :17:29.since you last saw him in Munich? Compared to when we saw him? Mahe

:17:29. > :17:39.has improved his technique. Alan Campbell is sitting nice and low in

:17:39. > :17:55.

:17:55. > :18:00.medallist in this event. He was disappointed with his fifth-place

:18:00. > :18:10.finish in Beijing. He is trying to put it right. He is coached by Bill

:18:10. > :18:10.

:18:10. > :18:19.Barry. And that partnership will hopefully come to fruition here at

:18:19. > :18:25.Eton Dorney. It has been a long journey for them. Bill Barry has

:18:25. > :18:31.had his sights set on a gold medal for his sculler and they had just

:18:31. > :18:37.been focused on this. Team officials were at one stage trying

:18:37. > :18:44.to put Alan Campbell into a double scull with Bill Lucas. But this did

:18:44. > :18:54.firm against that. He wanted to continue in this project. So they

:18:54. > :19:06.

:19:06. > :19:16.stayed in the Single Scull right gets his Olympic Games well under

:19:16. > :19:17.

:19:18. > :19:27.way. No surprises. He is doing all that has been asked of him. China

:19:28. > :19:35.

:19:35. > :19:41.in the second, of Poland in third position. Sloma of Poland, faster

:19:41. > :19:46.than the scullers making up the Polish Olympic Quad. And the

:19:46. > :19:56.Chinese sculler, he will carry on all the way to the line. So Alan

:19:56. > :20:01.

:20:01. > :20:11.knows he will have to keep going hard. The Chinese contender failed

:20:11. > :20:14.

:20:14. > :20:20.to turn up for the heat in Beijing so this is his first Olympics.

:20:20. > :20:30.Alan Campbell just keeping an eye on his right hand side. It is going

:20:30. > :20:32.

:20:32. > :20:42.to the Great Britain, China and Poland. Alan looking very strong.

:20:42. > :20:46.

:20:46. > :20:56.Niceley of fried in the boat. -- a is in fine form as he winds down to

:20:56. > :21:10.

:21:10. > :21:15.the line. China in second place. A solid start. Solid and strong. He

:21:15. > :21:23.did not really have to extend himself too hard. He went out very

:21:23. > :21:28.fast which is how he likes to do it. But I just want to see him making

:21:28. > :21:33.sure his boat is travelling well in the middle 1000. What do we read

:21:33. > :21:40.into that? I think it is a good start. The interview he gave before

:21:41. > :21:47.was honest about this season. He was going well and then lost his

:21:47. > :21:52.way as little bit. I'm pleased that he has mentally seen that. And the

:21:52. > :22:02.way that he rowed there, he was getting back to grips with it. He

:22:02. > :22:02.

:22:03. > :22:12.was actually took seconds faster than Mahe. It is always difficult

:22:13. > :22:13.

:22:13. > :22:22.in the single sculls. They have to do four rounds. So it is a very

:22:22. > :22:32.good start and shows he is back to where he has been before. If we

:22:32. > :22:32.

:22:32. > :22:42.show you the closing stages now of heat six, five athletes in this.

:22:42. > :22:45.

:22:45. > :22:51.The Czech Republic in something of a class of their own. Croatia there

:22:51. > :23:01.in second place. But it is something of the usual suspects for

:23:01. > :23:02.

:23:02. > :23:07.the single sculls. It is the same characters. There are around 20

:23:07. > :23:16.people in the singles and there is a big gap between the best. It is

:23:16. > :23:21.going to come down to around five scullers. That is just about it

:23:21. > :23:27.from us at Eton Dorney today. Three British crews winning their various

:23:27. > :23:32.seats today. Helen Glover and Heather Stanning were imperious in

:23:32. > :23:42.the Women's Pair. The sun shone, the venue works and team GB have

:23:42. > :23:46.the venue works and team GB have performed.

:23:46. > :23:52.Well another Olympic sport to get going to date was cycling and the

:23:52. > :24:02.road race. That has around two-and- a-half hours to go. That is

:24:02. > :24:08.uninterrupted on BBC Three if you want to follow that.

:24:08. > :24:16.And plenty happening as well, the second bite of Wimbledon tennis

:24:16. > :24:21.this summer. We have Roger Federer and Serena Williams. Jamie Murray

:24:21. > :24:31.and Andy Murray all involved on the opening day. And that is available

:24:31. > :24:32.

:24:32. > :24:40.for you on the red button. We're getting into head to head

:24:40. > :24:50.combat in judo. For all the Olympic success of Great Britain, judo has

:24:50. > :24:52.

:24:52. > :24:56.struggled to keep pace. Just one medal since 1992 and that was the

:24:56. > :25:06.silver in Sydney. So what has gone wrong and can be put it right this

:25:06. > :25:12.

:25:12. > :25:18.wrong and can be put it right this covered Matt. It has a 10 metres

:25:18. > :25:24.square contest area surrounded by as safety area. The referee remains

:25:24. > :25:30.in the combat area throughout the contest. Line judges stay outside

:25:30. > :25:40.to confirm the decision of the referee if necessary. There are a

:25:40. > :25:40.

:25:40. > :25:47.variety of techniques used. The ultimate aim is to execute the

:25:47. > :25:55.Ippon. It can be achieved by throwing your opponent flat on

:25:55. > :26:05.their back, gaining submission with alarm clock or a strangle. -- arm

:26:05. > :26:18.

:26:18. > :26:25.the opponent does not land on their the opponent does not land on their

:26:25. > :26:35.back. Well ASH Lee Mackenzie is up for

:26:35. > :26:36.

:26:36. > :26:42.Great Britain in the lightest of the categories. The men's 60 kilos.

:26:42. > :26:52.Against the Japanese contender, a Against the Japanese contender, a

:26:52. > :26:55.

:26:55. > :27:01.for the first time in these Olympics at the XL Santa. And we

:27:01. > :27:11.have the British contender, Ashley McKenzie.

:27:11. > :27:12.

:27:12. > :27:16.Just turned 23. A Londoner in his home time at his home a Olympics.

:27:16. > :27:26.Everyone has a story to tell but few have a story quite like Ashley

:27:26. > :28:05.

:28:05. > :28:15.blue. A brilliant start. He has opponent moving. He is an all

:28:15. > :28:18.

:28:18. > :28:22.action fighter, you can't see him on his toes. He was diagnosed as a

:28:22. > :28:29.hyperactive child when he was aged 11 and he discovered judo not long

:28:29. > :28:38.afterwards. He got into a fight and he said sport gave him a chance to

:28:38. > :28:48.feel good about life, to walk on the pavement instead of the road.

:28:48. > :28:51.

:28:51. > :29:01.And now he is here competing at the London Olympics. Hiroaka doing his

:29:01. > :29:31.

:29:31. > :29:35.Really putting in the attacks. He is still acknowledges that he has

:29:35. > :29:40.problems keeping on the straight and narrow. He has been banned for

:29:40. > :29:46.four times for getting into scrapes, drinking too much. He is a

:29:47. > :29:56.character and we are seeing the best of that character on the mat.

:29:57. > :29:59.

:29:59. > :30:09.How did he get himself out of that? That is one of Hiroaka's strongest

:30:09. > :30:09.

:30:09. > :30:58.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 48 seconds

:30:58. > :31:08.Award, for the yuko that puts you on your side -- the lowest level of

:31:08. > :31:37.

:52:27. > :52:33.ago about sharing the pagoda in Beijing. Remember doing the road

:52:33. > :52:38.races. Happily it is still to be tested, but no rain so far in the

:52:38. > :52:43.London Games. It is almost surreal, you pinch yourself when you look at

:52:43. > :52:48.this, it is happening four years on. We have been here a few days

:52:48. > :52:51.gearing up for today and to see all the people down there, the park is

:52:51. > :52:56.finally full and it is being used for what it is here to do and the

:52:56. > :53:04.atmosphere out there is lovely. The volunteers are doing their bit.

:53:04. > :53:10.Crack on. To bed? Yes. anticipation is building on the

:53:10. > :53:16.park, but also out on the streets of the capital as Team GB closes in

:53:16. > :53:21.on that first medal of London 2012. After all the hours of training,

:54:00. > :54:13.

:54:13. > :54:18.Mark Cavendish is the world champion! There may be a team

:54:18. > :54:23.competing, but it is all about one died. Just before I came here I

:54:23. > :54:28.read a quote that the plant is just to get Mark Cavendish to victory

:54:28. > :54:38.and it is set up for a Grand Slam finish. If you have been with us

:54:38. > :54:39.

:54:39. > :54:44.throughout the day, it has been far from easy. We are expecting the

:54:44. > :54:48.riders to enter The Mall in about an hour-and-a-half's time. Team GB

:54:49. > :54:54.were working so hard, all of them trying to drag Mark Cavendish up

:54:54. > :54:59.Box Hill. We can see them working hard. The aim is to keep as much

:54:59. > :55:03.energy in his legs as possible for the sprint back into London and in

:55:03. > :55:08.the sprint down The Mall to help him pick up that gold medal. How

:55:08. > :55:14.wonderful to see the shots. Box Hill is incredibly narrow and very

:55:14. > :55:19.tight and it is about a 5% gradient. Nothing is stopping Great Britain

:55:19. > :55:27.from working hard. You can see how hard they are working to keep Mark

:55:27. > :55:32.Cavendish in the hunt. Tanni Grey- Thompson has been there for us all

:55:32. > :55:38.day long. So far, it has seen about 20 seconds of absent today, but if

:55:38. > :55:42.the peloton can carry on reeling in the leaders you are going to see a

:55:42. > :55:47.thing is to remember down there this afternoon. We can feel the

:55:47. > :55:52.tension building because everybody is flocking back for the finish. We

:55:52. > :55:58.still have a break away at the front with 11 guys in there. We

:55:58. > :56:02.have a chasing group of 11 and you have got Philippe Gilbert in there

:56:02. > :56:07.who is trying to make a break to the leading group. You have got the

:56:07. > :56:11.peloton behind still being led by the British guys. They are sticking

:56:11. > :56:16.to their team tactics and not letting anyone get away. They are

:56:16. > :56:23.not panicking. Everyone thinks this is the perfect position for them to

:56:23. > :56:27.be end. We are seeing live shots. Give us an idea of the atmosphere.

:56:27. > :56:31.The gap was very bake at one point and we were wondering if there was

:56:31. > :56:37.a tactical error from Great Britain. Was it now is down there with

:56:37. > :56:44.everybody watching? I was told not to panic if it was over six minutes

:56:44. > :56:49.and it got over six minutes, and it is now less. There is still time

:56:49. > :56:57.for them to put it in, but the spectators, everybody wants to seek

:56:57. > :57:02.Team GB at the front and in control. We have not seen anything of Andre

:57:02. > :57:05.Greipel or Peter Sagan, some of the threats. The British team have been

:57:05. > :57:12.leading the peloton all the way and they have got the pressure of

:57:16. > :57:20.Wiggins brought some food back to the team, but they must be feeling

:57:20. > :57:26.some pressure. You were told not to panic if it was over six minutes

:57:27. > :57:34.and it was bought a time, but it is less now. I feel much better, but I

:57:34. > :57:40.would love to see Bradley Wiggins on the front of the whole lot.

:57:40. > :57:47.can see Mark Cavendish at the front. We will come back to you a little

:09:25. > :09:31.of emotion. Just over come up with the support and the relief in what

:09:31. > :09:36.he has achieved. 15.8, Smith is in the Olympic bomb or Horse Final.

:09:36. > :09:46.And he has a chance to go better than the bronze he got in Beijing -

:09:46. > :09:47.

:09:47. > :09:51.Mitch said it perfectly, wonderful stuff. The gymnast, in tears, so

:09:51. > :09:55.much emotion and gymnastics were wonderful in Beijing for the men,

:09:56. > :10:01.and they are looking to do the same thing. That performance from Luis

:10:01. > :10:05.was remarkable, but not only that, Great Britain finished above China.

:10:05. > :10:09.In 2011 when China were crowned world champions, Britain did not

:10:09. > :10:13.even make the final. That is how impressive the performance was

:10:13. > :10:18.today. Will it be enough to win a medal? We will find out later. Time

:10:18. > :10:22.for some boxing. It is the largest competition venue being used for

:10:22. > :10:31.the games, on the banks of the Thames, hosting seven Olympic

:10:31. > :10:37.sports. But today, let's focus on the fighters. It is Irish

:10:37. > :10:47.bantamweight fighter Jonjo Nevin aged just 18. And now he wants to

:10:47. > :10:48.

:10:48. > :10:54.be challenging for a medal. Let's very interesting bantamweight

:10:54. > :11:01.contest. The most experienced Olympic competition member of the

:11:02. > :11:09.Irish side, Jonjo Nevin, the 30 three-year-old from central island.

:11:09. > :11:15.-- the 20 three-year-old. His opponent is also 23. The first

:11:15. > :11:19.Danish boxer to get into the Olympics since Atlanta in 1996.

:11:19. > :11:23.Jonjo Nevin got through having got a bronze medal in the world

:11:23. > :11:30.championships back in Azerbaijan a year to go -- a year ago, when he

:11:30. > :11:34.lost narrowly on a countback after 12 rounds against Luke Campbell

:11:34. > :11:40.from Great Britain. Not getting it all his own way, but Nevin is

:11:40. > :11:44.taking his time. Solid, dependable competitor, Nevin. I think he is

:11:44. > :11:49.boxing well on the back foot and keeping his range and boxing the

:11:49. > :11:54.distances very well. He's bringing his opponents on to have no punches.

:11:54. > :11:58.The Danish boxing is on the front foot, orthodox and he can be

:11:58. > :12:05.erratic and the Open when he comes forward. That right hand seems to

:12:05. > :12:09.be finding the right distance. years ago he lost in the opening

:12:09. > :12:13.contest against the Nigerian and then lost 9-2 against the excellent

:12:13. > :12:18.Mongolian, and that was the closest contest that the Mongolian had to

:12:18. > :12:23.endure on his way to the gold medal. Nevin has really learn from that.

:12:23. > :12:29.Since then, a couple of bronze medals. A good, solid right hand

:12:29. > :12:33.from the Irishman, taking his time. If you're wondering what has

:12:33. > :12:39.happened to the running scores on the screen, they don't exist any

:12:39. > :12:44.more. But at the end of the round the scores will be coming up. Five

:12:44. > :12:49.judges at ringside. They have red and blue keypads to press if they

:12:49. > :12:54.think a man has landed a clean punch on the target area. This time

:12:54. > :12:58.the top and bottom scores are discounted. The computer works it

:12:58. > :13:02.out, you don't have to have a degree in matt-black -- mathematics.

:13:02. > :13:06.But nothing comes up any more, so you have to wait and see what

:13:06. > :13:11.happens at the end of the round. It is getting us back to the old days.

:13:11. > :13:14.Good work here, and he is counter- attacking and waiting for his

:13:14. > :13:19.opponent are coming into punching range, then stepping in and beating

:13:19. > :13:29.him to the punch. Very well timed boxing from Nevin. The timing is

:13:29. > :13:35.very good. At the moment he is very much winning this round. Good,

:13:35. > :13:38.economical style. And he is landing accurately. A good effort at the

:13:38. > :13:44.body. He got caught and he must not leave that she now. But a good

:13:44. > :13:54.finish in the end by the Irishman - - you must not leave it that she no

:13:54. > :13:58.

:13:58. > :14:03.doubt. A packed house here. 10,000 people. Not a seat to be had.

:14:03. > :14:07.good work here from Nevin. Leading well with the right hand. Towards

:14:07. > :14:11.the end of the round the Danish boxer came back with a good shot,

:14:11. > :14:17.just reminding Nevin he is still in the contest, but he dominated with

:14:17. > :14:27.the one to combination. Well-timed boxing from Nevin, and a clear

:14:27. > :14:36.

:14:36. > :14:42.winner in that round. He does have five men as boxers and one female

:14:42. > :14:52.boxer. The five-time gold champion. But at the moment it is all eyes on

:14:52. > :15:07.

:15:07. > :15:12.handles the ring space very well indeed. He boxes from the centre of

:15:12. > :15:17.the ring and he boxes in the spaces. Rarely do you see him back on the

:15:18. > :15:27.ropes because he knows that is where his opponents can get to him.

:15:28. > :15:28.

:15:28. > :15:36.So he controls centering. A good left again. The referee seems to

:15:36. > :15:46.think he hit with the open part of the glove. Stop, brake and box.

:15:46. > :15:57.

:15:57. > :16:01.Everything else is done by the it Uzbekistan and then had a very

:16:01. > :16:07.narrow defeat to Luke Campbell. problem Dennis Ceylan has got is

:16:07. > :16:11.that his feet are far too slow. He has got to start pushing Nevin back

:16:12. > :16:16.onto the ropes. He is too flat footed. He is coming forward and he

:16:17. > :16:26.is easy to hit. And he has got a low left hand, and that is why he

:16:26. > :16:31.keeps walking on to the right hand. Nevin probably needs to be tested a

:16:31. > :16:37.little bit more, but that will come as this tournament unfolds in this

:16:37. > :16:41.very competitive division. I think this is the perfect contest to

:16:41. > :16:47.break into the tournament with. This is starting to become a target

:16:47. > :16:53.practice. That is no disrespect to Dennis Ceylan. He is being

:16:53. > :16:57.outgunned and there is better quality coming from the Irishman.

:16:57. > :17:03.For the very first time in an Olympic boxing tournament we have

:17:03. > :17:13.men who are seeded. The number one goes to the top and the numbered

:17:13. > :17:26.

:17:26. > :17:36.of Nevin. I still think he is boxing within himself. Definitely

:17:36. > :17:36.

:17:36. > :17:46.and those body shots are starting to hurt his opponent. I think Nevin

:17:46. > :17:49.

:17:50. > :17:56.might be capable of winning this contest with -- within the distance.

:17:56. > :18:02.Another good round and he has opened up a gap. 10,000 people can

:18:03. > :18:10.see the big screen. It is 13-4 to the Irishman. That was a very good

:18:10. > :18:16.second round. Super work from Nevin with that right hand. Look how he

:18:16. > :18:21.got out of the way of that left hook. Then he switches downstairs

:18:21. > :18:27.and then back upstairs. Great boxing from Nevin in this round and

:18:27. > :18:35.he upped the tempo a little bit. Dennis Ceylan has got no answer to

:18:35. > :18:39.those punches. It is only when you look at slow-motion like that,

:18:39. > :18:49.because the action is done in double quick time, that you realise

:18:49. > :19:07.

:19:07. > :19:13.second Olympic Games, John Joe Nevin. His opponent is from Denmark.

:19:13. > :19:18.It is the accuracy that is causing all the problems for the Dane.

:19:18. > :19:22.pace has suited Nevin and he has dictated it. I liked the way he

:19:22. > :19:32.moves around his opponent, rather than moving back and going on to

:19:32. > :19:55.

:19:55. > :20:01.the ropes. It is great ring craft apart. The quality work has

:20:01. > :20:10.definitely come from him. Too much for the referee. The referee said

:20:10. > :20:14.that was a low blow. The vests have to be tucked well in so the

:20:14. > :20:20.waistband is visible to give the referee an idea whether the blow is

:20:20. > :20:30.legal or illegal. If it goes south of the border and is illegal, it

:20:30. > :20:45.

:20:46. > :20:52.straight lines, no sidesteps. Boxing with very flat feet and

:20:52. > :20:59.standing in front of his opponent. Irish boxers down the years have

:20:59. > :21:09.done their country proud. They have won more medals in this sport than

:21:09. > :21:36.

:21:36. > :21:46.really turned it on in the second and opened up a huge gap. Now he

:21:46. > :21:54.

:21:54. > :22:01.is hugely important. He did that four years ago in Beijing. There is

:22:01. > :22:09.no doubt about who won that one. That is a great boost for the Auris

:22:09. > :22:16.team. Jo Ward lost his appeal a couple of days ago. The Olympic

:22:16. > :22:22.circuit will be poorer without Jo Ward. No doubt who was dominating

:22:22. > :22:25.the contest all the way through. Quality work throughout the contest,

:22:25. > :22:35.especially the second and third round. That will settle the nerves

:22:35. > :22:39.

:22:39. > :22:47.for the whole Irish team. A good display. He was cool all the way

:22:47. > :22:55.through, John Joe Nevin. Now it is a matter of the margin. He may well

:22:55. > :23:05.have got himself past the 20 mark. A considerable haircut he has got

:23:05. > :23:07.

:23:07. > :23:13.This is a bit like the old days. In the previous system when the scores

:23:13. > :23:22.came up on the screens, you would have known who had one. It adds to

:23:22. > :23:32.the whole thing. It adds to the atmosphere. Ladies and gentlemen,

:23:32. > :23:35.

:23:35. > :23:45.the winner with a score of 21-6, in the red corner, John Joe Nevin.

:23:45. > :23:45.

:23:45. > :23:50.gets past the 20 Mark, the first boxer to do so far. A good

:23:50. > :23:58.performance by John Joe never end. 21-6 over his opponent from Denmark.

:23:58. > :24:03.A good start by the Irish. enjoyed that dramatic pause before

:24:03. > :24:09.the RIM went up in the air. You can see how in control he was in that

:24:09. > :24:17.about. His second taste of Olympic Games and just like in Beijing he

:24:17. > :24:23.wins his opening round. The boxing continues on the red button with

:24:23. > :24:29.Britain's Anthony Ogogo. He is a real pinup boy for boxing. He is on

:24:29. > :24:33.in half-an-hour on BBC Three. Now we are turning our attention to the

:24:33. > :24:40.men's road race. Four years ago Mark Cavendish was devastated to

:24:40. > :24:44.leave Beijing without a medal. Can you believe the biggest name in

:24:44. > :24:53.cycling, you either winner of the Tour de France? Bigger than

:24:53. > :25:00.Cavendish? A big part of spending his confidence and he has got

:25:00. > :25:06.bucket loads of it. He tastes victory and it is sweet. He is an

:25:06. > :25:10.all or nothing kind of guy and it is something I strive to be.

:25:10. > :25:16.raised his incredibly well and whether you and I would see a mass

:25:16. > :25:20.of bodies in a peloton, he just sees that the gaps. He is genius

:25:20. > :25:25.and ability is to stay completely rational and Ice Cold in what is

:25:25. > :25:31.the most hectic and uncontrollable murmured in cycling. People see the

:25:31. > :25:35.last 500m of a state, but you have had to ride for five hours to get

:25:35. > :25:43.to that point and he is able to unleash that amazing energy at the

:25:43. > :25:49.end. I would not even be at the finish. Mark Cavendish wins for the

:25:49. > :25:54.4th year running. It is making calculators, making decisions in an

:25:54. > :26:02.instant, it is as close to instinct as you can get from learning to

:26:02. > :26:07.ride a bicycle. Somehow he sees everything happening in slow motion.

:26:07. > :26:11.He sees things happen that other people are not seeing, making

:26:11. > :26:16.decisions that other people are panicking about. He is the only guy

:26:16. > :26:22.who is not losing his cool. But the moment he crosses that finishing

:26:22. > :26:30.line it all comes out at once. Cavendish has won the world title

:26:30. > :26:36.for Great Britain. To represent my country and to beat in the team, to

:26:36. > :26:43.do it for work your country and not for at a wage, it is a big, big

:26:43. > :26:47.thing. To us he is just Mark and even now in the last few days you

:26:47. > :26:52.can see he is getting jittery and excited and he is approaching the

:26:52. > :26:56.thing he has been looking at for the last few months and we have to

:26:56. > :27:03.calm him down. He is going through the full spectrum, he makes himself

:27:03. > :27:09.angry, nervous, confident. He is calm one moment and terrified the

:27:09. > :27:13.next. He is a wonderful personality. He is super excited, he is getting

:27:13. > :27:18.his shoes ready and the glasses and he is ready to go and he is as fit

:27:18. > :27:23.as I have ever seen him. He was complaining on the road today that

:27:23. > :27:29.we were going too hard. I said, it is your fault, you asked us to be

:27:29. > :27:37.here. We have got patriotic guys in the team, they really want to do

:27:37. > :27:41.this. We were out training and I was thinking, this is a Dream Team.

:27:41. > :27:46.It is a big thing to have guys who can win in their own right

:27:46. > :27:51.dedicating themselves to a cause. I cannot let the guys down, I cannot

:27:51. > :27:57.let the team down, that is it, that is the biggest thing.

:27:57. > :28:02.It is now time for Mark and Team GB to deliver it. Let's go live to the

:28:02. > :28:09.streets of Surrey for an hour of cycling. It might just deliver the

:28:09. > :28:19.first medal of the 2012 Games. We are with Stuart Broad man and Chris

:28:19. > :28:25.

:28:25. > :28:35.group. One man is ahead, Philippe Gilbert, the Belgian. But I think

:28:35. > :28:41.he has gone too early. The first group went away very early on and

:28:41. > :28:51.established lead of almost six minutes. Then they were joined by a

:28:51. > :28:53.

:28:53. > :28:57.chasing group of 12. That contained a huge amount of talent. Then they

:28:57. > :29:03.came together and the residue of that group has gone through and one

:29:03. > :29:10.man is ahead of them and that is Philippe Gilbert. They are on the

:29:10. > :29:13.final ascent of Box Hill, so it is far too long for him to stay away.

:29:13. > :29:19.But then used his Great Britain have been in control throughout and

:29:19. > :29:24.they have never panic. They have kept the tempo Hythe. They have

:29:24. > :29:32.kept the rhythm up. Nobody of danger has got away and it means

:29:32. > :29:42.that Mark Cavendish has got good legs and it is all building nicely

:29:42. > :29:47.

:29:47. > :29:51.for the game-plan of delivering him plan could not have gone better for

:29:51. > :29:59.the Great Britain team. They have let the group's goal weight on the

:29:59. > :30:05.climbing, ridden together, nursing Mark Cavendish. They have done a

:30:05. > :30:10.fantastic job. And it looks like the run into London, just 50

:30:10. > :30:17.kilometres of, they will be able to bring the race under control.

:30:17. > :30:27.Hopefully for Mark Cavendish they will have a sprint. The head of the

:30:27. > :30:29.

:30:29. > :30:33.breakaway group which is chasing down Gilbert. Still in there is

:30:33. > :30:39.O'Grady. We have an attack forming here. This is exactly what we

:30:39. > :30:46.expected on the final ascent of Box Hill. The riders will try to jump

:30:46. > :30:49.clear between them and the peloton being led by the Great Britain team.

:30:49. > :30:53.About 20 guys ahead of them, so they are just bridging between the

:30:53. > :30:57.groups. It is quite difficult for them to know what to do. You can

:30:57. > :31:02.see the British team look like they are ignoring the rest of the

:31:02. > :31:06.peloton. They have one script, one plan, Riding for Mark Cavendish.

:31:06. > :31:09.They are letting all of these riders go and once they get over

:31:09. > :31:14.the top of the climb they will drive back towards London to try to

:31:14. > :31:18.pull everything back together. well-drilled unit, the British team,

:31:18. > :31:24.they have never panicked or tried to jump clear. They have just

:31:24. > :31:30.relentlessly kept the tempo up as we go back to the leading rider,

:31:30. > :31:34.and BT's Philippe Gilbert, getting a tremendous ovation. He is a

:31:34. > :31:38.talented rider with a list of classic victories to his credit.

:31:38. > :31:43.There were some doubts about him riding after he took a heavy tumble

:31:43. > :31:47.in the Tour de France, but fortunately nothing was broken,

:31:47. > :31:53.although he heavily bruised his shoulder. Gilbert is having a crack.

:31:53. > :31:59.Denmark at the front of what is left of the group. They are driving

:31:59. > :32:05.around heart. I am sure the days of the group are numbered. Just 43

:32:05. > :32:08.seconds behind Philippe Gilbert, and soon we will see the peloton

:32:08. > :32:11.coming into view. It will not be the Great Britain team at the head

:32:11. > :32:16.of the peloton, it will be those few people who have been attacking

:32:16. > :32:21.on the climb and then the British team will drive hard to pull it

:32:21. > :32:31.back together. This is literally as they planned the race. The group

:32:31. > :32:31.

:32:31. > :32:38.trying to chase Gill but down, who has left the group -- Gilbert.

:32:38. > :32:45.There are some talented riders and O'Grady looked like he took a hand

:32:45. > :32:49.sling. That is one minute and 21 seconds, the gap. So I think the

:32:49. > :32:52.British team do have this under control. They have one hour of

:32:52. > :32:57.racing, a little more than that to go. I think they can control it for

:32:57. > :33:01.that. They must be very confident. Mark Cavendish must be relieved he

:33:01. > :33:07.has passed those nine Tests and he can look forward to the sprint

:33:07. > :33:11.finish. It is looking very good indeed. The game plan is working

:33:11. > :33:17.well. Just to reiterate the earlier comment, they have never faltered

:33:17. > :33:26.and panicked, so great Britain working with this one aim, to

:33:26. > :33:30.deliver the Express to the mal -- were more. Gilbert making a real

:33:30. > :33:35.feast of this. He did this in 2010 when the championships took place

:33:35. > :33:39.in Belgium. The Belgian flags supporting him. He went off with

:33:39. > :33:44.about 10 miles to go but faded within a kilometre or of the line.

:33:44. > :33:50.This is classic Gilbert. But he has gone far too early. Has he read the

:33:50. > :33:56.manual? I think he was hoping someone else would come along with

:33:56. > :34:00.him. A group of 22 is far too big for them to stay away. He thought

:34:00. > :34:04.he would attack early and maybe bring the group down to a smaller

:34:04. > :34:07.number that would work well together. Gilbert, the man of the

:34:07. > :34:11.moment, taking the race to the rest of them. There is Timothy Duggan,

:34:11. > :34:15.the national champion with the USA and he has been in the thick of the

:34:15. > :34:22.action. He was in the little group that developed after 20 kilometres

:34:22. > :34:28.and built up the lead of six minutes. Berkovic, Menchov,

:34:28. > :34:38.Kristoff, to or maim some of the group. There are still some of them.

:34:38. > :34:40.

:34:40. > :34:50.Bracken which is still there -- here, but there are still one or

:34:50. > :34:52.

:34:52. > :34:55.two smart operators not figuring yet. The biggest danger for Mark

:34:55. > :35:00.Cavendish is the German at the finish. He did beat him in the

:35:00. > :35:04.sprint at the Tour de France, so that is the person that will be

:35:04. > :35:13.more worrying for the British team. But it could also work for them.

:35:13. > :35:17.The Germans have not really contributed to the chase. The

:35:17. > :35:21.German team have still got some bodies to use in the final. Mark

:35:21. > :35:26.Cavendish might be up to make use of that. A big injection of pace at

:35:26. > :35:31.the front. Spain beginning to turn the screw, or is in Holland? Yes,

:35:31. > :35:39.Holland having a crack. One or two other sprinters, Tom Bowman, we

:35:39. > :35:43.haven't seen anything of him, and there are other names to conjure

:35:43. > :35:47.with when it comes to the spring. There will be a few names in play

:35:47. > :35:51.but there is only one we think can win this if it comes down to a

:35:51. > :35:57.bunch sprint, and that is obviously what the British team thing. Mark

:35:57. > :36:07.Cavendish waiting, and how to wait till he can do his thing and then

:36:07. > :36:07.

:36:07. > :36:12.congratulate the team for the work they have done to this point.

:36:12. > :36:15.are getting very little information in the time splits, and it is just

:36:15. > :36:19.our memory being tested here really at the moment but we are looking at

:36:20. > :36:24.this incredible effort by Philippe Gill but who has now totally

:36:24. > :36:28.committed himself -- Philippe Gilbert. If he fails, he will have

:36:28. > :36:32.to go to the back of the peloton because he will have nothing left

:36:32. > :36:37.in his legs. If you look at the amount of action, he has been

:36:37. > :36:41.holding them over the last lap of the course, one minute and 20

:36:41. > :36:46.seconds over the peloton which is quite something, but with an hour

:36:46. > :36:51.left to right on flat roads, which are great roads or chasing, that is

:36:51. > :36:59.too much to us from one rider alone. You are right, but he is attacking

:36:59. > :37:06.the task with unbridled passion. I mentioned earlier, but let me tell

:37:06. > :37:11.you, the last medal won by a Belgian in the Olympic games came

:37:11. > :37:18.in the searing Athenian of the sun down on the tough circuit in Athens.

:37:18. > :37:28.Their last gold medal, you have to go a long way back. It was 1952, in

:37:28. > :37:30.

:37:30. > :37:35.Helsinki. The attacking these coming thick and fast behind.

:37:35. > :37:38.Everybody psychologically things after getting to just one hour left

:37:38. > :37:43.there is not a lot of time left. They really are coming thick and

:37:43. > :37:48.fast. This is where Great Britain have to be extra vigilant and look

:37:48. > :37:52.for the moves and stamp them out. It is HS on wheels scenario.

:37:52. > :38:02.Somebody makes a move, and you have to make a move to counter at -- it

:38:02. > :38:05.he's a chess on wheels. They have come off the elbow of the Duke of

:38:05. > :38:14.Wellington Place in to constitution Hill, that is where Cavendish needs

:38:14. > :38:18.to be there before he relaunches his sprint. A lot of activity from

:38:18. > :38:22.the group behind, but surely it is all in vain. My eye is drawn back

:38:22. > :38:27.down the road to see what is happening behind and how close is

:38:27. > :38:30.the peloton from catching the group. Italy has decided that they will

:38:30. > :38:33.have to do something with this. They have spent a lot of energy

:38:33. > :38:41.getting the men into the group, so they will have to make the most of

:38:41. > :38:45.it. Now they are driving to what purpose, I'm not sure. If you are

:38:45. > :38:50.just turning on to watch the concluding stages, and you are a

:38:50. > :38:54.cycling fan, you are probably asking, Italy? They have not wound

:38:54. > :38:59.up in their famous blue colours, they are in their new car lot of

:38:59. > :39:04.weight and I do not nullify like it or not -- then you come up of white

:39:04. > :39:12.and I do not know if I like that or not. -- their new colour up of

:39:12. > :39:18.white. It is Italy not happy with the development of Gilbert been

:39:18. > :39:26.clear. They have the good sprinter who chased Cavendish home in the

:39:26. > :39:36.test event and Cavendish was held to one it will buy them. -- one

:39:36. > :39:43.of the Italians as they start to come through. But look at Gilbert.

:39:43. > :39:49.He is really driving on for this one. That is a fully committed bike

:39:49. > :39:53.rider, isn't it? Absolutely everything here. We have not really

:39:53. > :39:57.seen him today, but that could be the case with any winner of this

:39:57. > :40:00.race. We probably will not have even seen their face, because it is

:40:00. > :40:10.all about the final hour and the positioning and spotting an

:40:10. > :40:43.

:40:43. > :40:47.the mix, the bronze medallist from Beijing, he is another man to look

:40:47. > :40:52.out for at the finish. Italy of a country that has had the most

:40:52. > :40:57.victories in this event. -- Italy are the country. They have five

:40:57. > :41:03.gold medal victories to their credit. Russia and France have

:41:03. > :41:09.celebrated two wins each. We are not going to get a situation like

:41:09. > :41:16.the one at the end of the race in Rome, in 1960, when the Russian

:41:16. > :41:21.beat the Italian. They had to sprint twice, and then they had to

:41:21. > :41:28.do another lap and sprint again, but it was the same result. They

:41:28. > :41:31.certainly would not like that. Look at this determination on the face

:41:31. > :41:41.of the Norwegian trying to get away. And it is not the man I thought I

:41:41. > :41:43.

:41:43. > :41:46.would see. The real man for Norway has got to be Hagen. We have not

:41:47. > :41:51.seen much of him, but he was in great shape last week in the Tour

:41:51. > :41:57.de France. He can release print well, so we could see him trying to

:41:57. > :42:02.get into move -- he can really sprint well. There will be a lot of

:42:02. > :42:06.people doing it. It might mean that there is the potential to succeed.

:42:06. > :42:11.But failing that, if he goes down to the final sprint, he has a good

:42:11. > :42:16.possibility of getting a medal. Gilbert has been caught. The race

:42:17. > :42:23.seems to be getting itself together. They are starting to work, but I

:42:23. > :42:32.think it will be a bit late. Spain all their riding as a group.

:42:32. > :42:38.Castroviejo Nicolas has been away all day. I think they're big strong

:42:38. > :42:42.man today has got to be Sanchez, the stage winner in the Tour de

:42:42. > :42:46.France. He is not a big sprinter but if he can establish a gap in a

:42:46. > :42:50.good time trial will take a lot of pulling back. I would have thought

:42:50. > :42:55.Sanchez would have been a good bet on the circuit, but now we are off

:42:55. > :43:00.it I'm not so sure. They are an excellent position though now.

:43:00. > :43:04.Three men, meaning they have at least one who can do some work.

:43:04. > :43:10.They really are motoring down this flat road as they head towards

:43:10. > :43:16.London. Where are the Great Britain team? They are still on the nose of

:43:16. > :43:21.the chasers, where they have been all day. That is quite a gap. Look

:43:21. > :43:26.at this. Still going back, further. There we are. What would you say

:43:26. > :43:31.the time gap is? I think it is deceptive because they are moving

:43:31. > :43:35.so fast that the gaps are bigger for the same amount of time.

:43:35. > :43:39.Reaching speeds of 55 kilometres per hour, which means they will be

:43:39. > :43:43.with us in about 50 minutes time if they carried on with that average.

:43:43. > :43:53.The wind is behind them, so it is feasible that they could average

:43:53. > :43:57.

:43:57. > :44:05.those kinds of speeds and move a group. Everybody but something to

:44:05. > :44:15.play for. -- with something to play for. A lot of passengers in the

:44:15. > :44:32.

:44:32. > :44:39.group, but some Major players as that Gilbert has made today and he

:44:39. > :44:47.has not profited from either. As we look down the field, at the head,

:44:47. > :44:51.Great Britain ploughing along at the front. Where is Mark Cavendish?

:44:51. > :44:56.He is back one or two wheels. He needs to get a bit more shelter and

:44:56. > :45:01.make the most of the work that his team is doing for him. We will see

:45:01. > :45:07.how much easier it is when it is 10 riders back, literally freewheeling

:45:07. > :45:17.at the front, and riding as hard as they can. It is going to be a fast

:45:17. > :45:39.

:45:39. > :45:43.run in it now. Five hours of racing is Bradley Wiggins on the front.

:45:43. > :45:49.You can see the bunching of the peloton and then pushing over the

:45:49. > :45:55.top. They are getting so close now they really do need to start

:45:55. > :46:03.reeling in the group. They have not got long to reach that gap. It

:46:03. > :46:13.looked like it was fragmenting. They are a dangerous group to let

:46:13. > :46:18.

:46:18. > :46:23.stay away. The pressure is being applied and it is hurting. We have

:46:23. > :46:29.about 24 miles of racing left. That is less than an hour before we

:46:29. > :46:36.crown the Olympic gold medallist in London. The 30th Olympiad taking

:46:36. > :46:41.place. Bradley Wiggins is on the front, but they have to work now

:46:41. > :46:45.and use up the effort. They wanted to save it for the sprint, but the

:46:45. > :46:50.group further up the road is way too dangerous and they need to get

:46:50. > :46:56.on top of it as quickly as possible and get fresh light breathe into it.

:46:56. > :47:02.They have to bring it back now. traditional flick of the elbow from

:47:03. > :47:10.Wiggins. He is saying, I have done my turn and the next rider needs to

:47:10. > :47:14.come through. We have not seen Fabian Cancellara at all to date.

:47:14. > :47:18.This is why, he has been waiting for the opportunity. He waited

:47:18. > :47:22.until that final climb and he managed to get across to this group

:47:22. > :47:28.and that is what is making the difference. They are not worried

:47:28. > :47:34.about the amount of passengers in this group. Sanchez is also in this

:47:34. > :47:38.group. Yes, he is a dangerous man, but Fabian Cancellara is worrying

:47:38. > :47:43.me. He will be happy with the development. It is a big group and

:47:44. > :47:49.it is a massive split. It changes think dramatically, and it is

:47:49. > :47:54.frustrating we are not getting any time differences. Despite the size

:47:54. > :47:59.of his group, it is about the key names in there. Those are the teams

:47:59. > :48:03.that are doing all of the driving. If the Germans do not help the

:48:03. > :48:08.British team, they are not going to be there for them. They really need

:48:08. > :48:13.to start to commit and help the British steam. This is by no means

:48:13. > :48:18.a done deal. The it is a dangerous mood and the Great Britain team

:48:18. > :48:21.will be aware of this. Whether they are aware of the composition of the

:48:21. > :48:29.group and whether they know that Fabian Cancellara is in there, I do

:48:30. > :48:35.not know. It is going to become dangerous. It is not good for

:48:35. > :48:42.Germany, but it is not good for at Mark Cavendish and Great Britain.

:48:43. > :48:45.Where is Tom Boonen? I have not seen him in the race. Now they are

:48:46. > :48:53.getting a hand. It is Germany and Great Britain pulling the field

:48:53. > :48:57.along. Germany is committing one rider at the time and they are

:48:58. > :49:07.playing a dangerous game. They should be pushing all of their

:49:08. > :49:14.

:49:14. > :49:18.troops behind him. There is Mark Cavendish touched on the wheel.

:49:18. > :49:28.That is the kind of situation you see all that time in the Tour de

:49:28. > :49:29.

:49:29. > :49:34.France. The lead is round about 30 seconds. Now it comes up on the

:49:34. > :49:40.screen and it is 57 seconds and there is a group of 32 in the front.

:49:40. > :49:44.It really is a big group. Let's hope the British team have

:49:44. > :49:50.calculated this right. It really is a nail-biting last three-quarters

:49:50. > :49:53.of an hour. We are not getting any information and we are not being

:49:53. > :49:59.told the position and the composition of the group on the

:49:59. > :50:04.computer. We are just hearing the odd name here and there, but we

:50:05. > :50:10.know Fabian Cancellara is in there. There is Tom Boonen. He is happy.

:50:11. > :50:15.The Germans are lining up as well. They are perfectly happy to let the

:50:15. > :50:20.British team do the work. I am not convinced with a gap of nearly a

:50:20. > :50:26.minute, I think it is a dangerous game. They really need to start

:50:26. > :50:31.driving, but these are experienced professionals. Ian Stannard is

:50:31. > :50:38.doing the work now and we have to trust in their ability to judge the

:50:38. > :50:45.gap, but it is nerve-racking to watch. One minute, it is confirmed

:50:45. > :50:51.34 kilometres to go. Hopefully we will get some shots of the front

:50:51. > :50:57.group so we can confirm the danger men. We know Fabian Cancellara is

:50:58. > :51:04.in this group, the silver medal- winner from Beijing. Spartacus is

:51:04. > :51:09.his nickname. He pulled out of the Tour de France after just over a

:51:10. > :51:16.week because his wife gave birth to their second child. But he has been

:51:16. > :51:21.keeping his form in perfect condition. I make it 42 minutes of

:51:21. > :51:26.racing left in this Olympic men's road race before the gold medal is

:51:26. > :51:31.settled. It really is a nail-biter with this group having a minute's

:51:31. > :51:37.advantage. The teams have got their work cut out if they want to bring

:51:37. > :51:46.this back together. The do not have Samuel Sanchez here because of

:51:46. > :51:56.injury, but they have got three riders in this front group. It is

:51:56. > :52:00.

:52:00. > :52:05.pretty good indeed. At the moment Great Britain are on the back foot.

:52:05. > :52:08.Those riders are all good sprinters, but they are not the best sprinters,

:52:08. > :52:18.but the best sprinters are a minute behind and that would be a good

:52:18. > :52:35.

:52:35. > :52:40.specialist at the front is powering his way on. He is trying to pull

:52:40. > :52:46.the group back. But this group is being driven by Spain and they have

:52:46. > :52:55.got a good at move on. The Spanish and the Swiss know they have got an

:52:55. > :53:00.opportunity. They fought for it on that climb. There is a huge amount

:53:00. > :53:04.of hangers on. They may not be the very best riders on paper, but they

:53:04. > :53:09.have had a free ride all the way into London and they have had an

:53:09. > :53:14.opportunity here and they may be able to use it by attacking in the

:53:14. > :53:18.final five or 10 kilometres. The speed with which the Spanish are

:53:18. > :53:24.driving that group at the moment, it is hard to think that anybody

:53:24. > :53:31.can be attacking them. They are on towards Hampton court way and then

:53:31. > :53:37.they will swing right up to Queen's Road. They are almost sniffing at

:53:37. > :53:44.the finish. This is a mood of immense proportions. This is very

:53:45. > :53:50.important and Spain are absolutely spot-on. They are fully committed.

:53:50. > :53:57.Nobody it's trying to wave anybody else on. They are committed to the

:53:57. > :54:07.work. If they let the speed drop for a minute, there are others

:54:07. > :54:10.

:54:10. > :54:16.behind them. One more try to have a go off the front. After all the

:54:16. > :54:19.hard work of Great Britain, are they now going to lose out? I find

:54:19. > :54:24.that really hard to believe. They know what they are doing and they

:54:24. > :54:31.do this as a day-job all the time. They get a feel for it and they

:54:31. > :54:41.know that time gaps and they know what it will take to bring a break

:54:41. > :54:45.

:54:45. > :54:55.back. But this looks dangerous to me. By Verdi had a podium finish in

:54:55. > :55:00.

:55:00. > :55:10.the Tour de France. Leon Sanchez with very good form, from Spain.

:55:10. > :55:26.

:55:26. > :55:30.There are a lot of people driving is very dangerous for the British

:55:30. > :55:36.team after all the hard work they have done. They are totally

:55:36. > :55:41.committed on the front. They know it is the Olympic Games. This is

:55:41. > :55:47.the responsibility of Ian Stannard. He is driving as fast as he cancels

:55:47. > :55:57.stock he will peel off after his work is done, but he is trying

:55:57. > :55:58.

:55:58. > :56:08.single-handedly to pull this break pack away. Every little paws and

:56:08. > :56:24.

:56:24. > :56:29.Ian Stannard claws back a second or There is not much time to go now.

:56:29. > :56:39.They need some help. Leaving Ian Stannard on the front it might not

:56:39. > :56:43.

:56:44. > :56:51.be enough. That Australian is there as well. We are getting no numbers

:56:51. > :56:59.or feet or captions. Is that Matthew Goss? I think it is Stuart

:56:59. > :57:04.O'Grady. He is still in the next, he has been in it all day. He has

:57:04. > :57:10.done plenty just to be in this position in the race. It shows you

:57:10. > :57:15.how you can read a race. He is not the peak strength he had before.

:57:15. > :57:25.But he has got the experience and he knows how to be in the right

:57:25. > :57:29.

:57:29. > :57:39.place. The wells have we got? That is Philippe Gilbert. Surely he has

:57:39. > :57:58.

:57:58. > :58:02.got to have had his form dented by They are ringing at their loudest

:58:02. > :58:07.because this is very, very dangerous for Great Britain. They

:58:07. > :58:12.are running out of distance. They realise it and they are on the

:58:12. > :58:17.front. They have got to find something here. They could do with

:58:17. > :58:20.some allies to come through and help with the work. Mark

:58:20. > :58:26.Cavendish's gold medal chances are slipping away on the approach to

:58:26. > :58:31.the finish. This is Bradley Wiggins. This is earlier than they would

:58:32. > :58:37.have wanted to be used, but they have got to do the job. His time-

:58:37. > :58:42.trial ability is going to be tested to the fault. The German team are

:58:42. > :58:47.starting to contribute now, but it might be too late. They are going

:58:47. > :58:54.to have to drive flat out now. You have got to be there for the sprint

:58:54. > :59:01.in the first place. You certainly have. Just look at the way that

:59:01. > :59:05.long, thin line has formed. The crowd are loving it. They are

:59:05. > :59:15.getting the British team as much support as they can, but is it

:59:15. > :59:18.

:59:18. > :59:23.Froome, actually. I'm surprised we haven't seen more work from him.

:59:23. > :59:29.He's decided that it bore the day. A generous round of applause at the

:59:29. > :59:34.finishing straight. It is job done for Chris Froome but he's a strong

:59:34. > :59:39.man to lose. We are down to three men now to help Mark Cavendish.

:59:39. > :59:43.Only three riders to help him now and look up the pace at the front.

:59:43. > :59:50.Switzerland right at the front, beginning to raise the tempo.

:59:50. > :59:58.have got a great opportunity, with a group like this, Fabien

:59:58. > :00:02.Cantillaro, he can sprint well. We are starting to see some fractures

:00:02. > :00:12.in this group. They are starting to think about the finish. It could be

:00:12. > :00:23.

:00:23. > :00:28.are the favourites. Slipping back into the group now. It is there one

:00:28. > :00:36.minute now, Chris. This is very, very bad. Great Britain are, with

:00:36. > :00:40.one rider down, from the chasing squad. He wants to save his legs

:00:40. > :00:45.for the sprint, Chris Froome, so there is only three men now to help

:00:45. > :00:55.Mark Cavendish. They have to lay down now. It's all about closing

:00:55. > :01:22.

:01:22. > :01:27.this gap. It's a quality group. No solid sprinter. They all have a

:01:27. > :01:37.chance. He will be after a medal as well. I don't think he's got quite

:01:37. > :01:43.the speed. Philip Gill but I feel sure he won't be better spent after

:01:43. > :01:49.the efforts he has made in this race -- Philip Gilbert. I remember

:01:49. > :01:55.him in Sydney. They realise the danger and are getting involved now.

:01:55. > :01:59.It really is close now. They are not making any inroads and indeed

:01:59. > :02:03.every metre of road to tried to close the gap. Bradley Wiggins

:02:03. > :02:07.involved in the chase now. We thought he might stop and save his

:02:07. > :02:14.legs for the time trial but has laid it all down for Mark Cavendish,

:02:14. > :02:17.for this road race. Let's hope it's a sacrifice which is not in vain.

:02:17. > :02:21.Such a blistering pace that front, and nobody is coming through and

:02:22. > :02:27.they have got to come through and start working out. Belgium are

:02:27. > :02:35.there but they don't need to contribute. They will look after

:02:35. > :02:40.the interests of the Belgians who are clear. The gap is a 57 seconds,

:02:40. > :02:44.so it has come down a little bit. It was just over one minute, but

:02:44. > :02:54.that's not enough. They will start to mess around at the front as they

:02:54. > :02:57.

:02:57. > :03:01.go for the victory. Over 30 riders, 33, as our camera pans out, we're

:03:01. > :03:05.almost praying our time checks are correct because that's a big, big

:03:05. > :03:09.gap with less than 20 kilometres left to raise now. They go past

:03:09. > :03:14.Hampton Court. A glorious shot at Hampton Court Palace, the scene of

:03:14. > :03:19.the action for the men's and women's time-trial next Wednesday.

:03:19. > :03:25.Spain here doing the driving. 55 seconds, it has come back another

:03:25. > :03:32.three seconds, so they are nibbling away all the time. 23 kilometres to

:03:32. > :03:38.go. They have got a 3.5 Extra: it has to try to close this gap. It

:03:38. > :03:45.really is going to be difficult. As they start to think about attacking,

:03:45. > :03:49.but will drop her speed but their speed and give an opportunity to

:03:49. > :03:56.the riders behind to close up. A sizable gap but there were

:03:56. > :04:02.relatively small distance remaining. The Russian is also in this group,

:04:02. > :04:06.the bronze medal winner in Beijing. He's very powerful in the finishing

:04:06. > :04:12.charge. Several people all other similar sprinting ability, road

:04:13. > :04:15.riders, hard men, not top sprinters but good in groups. There are

:04:16. > :04:21.several of them who could take this race. The British team cannot bring

:04:21. > :04:26.it back. That's exactly what they are trying to do. Driving is hard

:04:26. > :04:30.as they can. They controlled this raised all day, just four guys have

:04:30. > :04:36.managed to keep this race as close as it is now, and for the rest of

:04:36. > :04:39.the world, they are somewhat taken aback by the work the two British

:04:40. > :04:44.riders did in the Tour de France and at last year's world

:04:44. > :04:54.championship. They are placed too much confidence in a British team.

:04:54. > :05:02.They have let them to it. That bluff might end up not working out.

:05:03. > :05:12.Grabsch is still there. They need to drive through. Mark Cavendish is

:05:13. > :05:19.

:05:19. > :05:29.on front, number 13. No, Arts still do it. One big injection of

:05:29. > :05:32.

:05:32. > :05:42.pace. Austria are now getting involved as well. Daniel Schorn. Is

:05:42. > :05:50.

:05:50. > :05:55.there's a thing for him to do. If he tries to help, he will have

:05:55. > :06:02.nothing left for the Sprint and then it will be in vain. So many

:06:02. > :06:12.Union Jacks on the Fabian Cancellara. -- so many Union Jacks

:06:12. > :06:12.

:06:13. > :06:20.on The Mall. Was that the capture of one of the big sprinters of

:06:20. > :06:25.Germany, as is Andre Greipel, and it looks like he will come to the

:06:26. > :06:28.front to try to raise the pace. They need to do it soon. I feel a

:06:28. > :06:33.lot of people are waiting for a sprint and if they don't commit

:06:33. > :06:37.themselves now there won't be one. There is no point saving lead out

:06:37. > :06:41.men to come in in third or 4th position. There certainly isn't.

:06:41. > :06:46.Once again Great Britain on the front powering along trying to lift

:06:46. > :06:52.the tempo a little bit more. Ian Stannard again on the front. As

:06:52. > :06:57.strong as he is, he cannot do this alone. Everyone is leaving him

:06:57. > :07:00.alone at the front to do this work. They need half a dozen riders

:07:00. > :07:05.driving through giving everything they have got in these final

:07:05. > :07:09.kilometres. Yes, Iain Stannard with his race face on their, grimacing

:07:09. > :07:14.and gritting his teeth. Is under so much pressure as he tries to help

:07:14. > :07:20.the British team along the front. He's trying to pull the leading

:07:20. > :07:27.group back to no avail. Well, the Swiss are driving here and now they

:07:27. > :07:32.have their opportunity. Fabien Cantillaro, will hear attack? Will

:07:32. > :07:36.he wait for the sprint? We don't know. The last few metres are going

:07:36. > :07:42.to be electrifying. So Spain have three men in this group and that is

:07:42. > :07:46.a first class situation. O'Grady is still in there. He has been away at

:07:46. > :07:52.the front of the race ever since the first 20 kilometres when he

:07:52. > :07:56.instigated the first move of the race. He's not too comfortable on

:07:56. > :08:02.the wheels. We saw him shaking his muscles out 100 kilometres to go

:08:02. > :08:08.now. He doesn't do any responsibility to ride here. If he

:08:08. > :08:16.can find opportunity, well, he will take it. Then Stuart O'Grady can

:08:16. > :08:24.take advantage. The commentary team beside us realise they have gone in

:08:24. > :08:29.trouble as well here. About 22 minutes of racing at this speed to

:08:29. > :08:35.go. This Olympic road race. There's all to play for. 51 seconds, the

:08:35. > :08:43.gap, so it's coming down. It is still possible, isn't it? They are

:08:43. > :08:51.coming up to Richmond Park. It's coming down but achingly slow. Its

:08:51. > :08:56.15 seconds of that time when they start to mess around. That will be

:08:56. > :09:00.there to close, at least 30 seconds now. Dear, dear, this is nail-

:09:00. > :09:07.biting stuff, isn't it? Great Britain on the front, Germany,

:09:07. > :09:11.second, Great Britain third, Germany, 4th. It's a mix of the two

:09:11. > :09:17.most powerful squads would this printers. Bradley Wiggins at the

:09:17. > :09:22.front driving. He has to do it now. He can't save it. At the world

:09:22. > :09:25.championship last year, he lasted until last, an aide, to turn up.

:09:25. > :09:30.Mark Cavendish on the final bend, but he won't be able to do that

:09:30. > :09:34.this year. He is the person who's got to use his ability now. He's

:09:34. > :09:39.got the gold medal to race for on Wednesday and this will not help

:09:39. > :09:49.his chances in that event. If he manages to pull this off, well, he

:09:49. > :09:53.

:09:53. > :09:56.will owe Bradley Wiggins a rather ticking away, the distance to the

:09:56. > :10:00.finish. The distance between these groups, as we switch to a

:10:00. > :10:07.helicopter shot, it shows us the actual beautiful countryside which

:10:07. > :10:12.Cwm-parc. I was filming here yesterday. -- Richmond Park.

:10:12. > :10:17.certainly is beautiful, scenic, and is providing us with a perfect

:10:17. > :10:21.arena for the closing stages here of the Olympic Games road race, and

:10:21. > :10:26.to the two groups are slugging it out. There has been an attack at

:10:26. > :10:33.the front. Why they are roaring, I don't know, because not all Great

:10:33. > :10:39.Britain. A rider has gone away here, and I think he's from Norway. He

:10:39. > :10:49.could be the lone leader here trying to go away. There's an awful

:10:49. > :10:58.

:10:58. > :11:03.the final climb. Clearly, his form is absolutely fantastic. He must

:11:03. > :11:08.have a lot of confidence to go this far out. 20 kilometres to go with

:11:08. > :11:12.the group behind you, there's an awful lot to do. Why didn't he wait

:11:12. > :11:17.a bit longer? And then spring a surprise? He is being pulled back

:11:17. > :11:23.now by the rest of the riders. He has had some good performances, to

:11:23. > :11:28.his credit, over the years. And it looks as if he's going to get swept

:11:28. > :11:33.up here. Is about we pulled back but it was a valiant effort and it

:11:33. > :11:43.certainly put the rest on the back foot. It's the right thing to do

:11:43. > :11:53.but unfortunate, at the wrong time. A former silver medal or. --

:11:53. > :11:58.meddler. Is it pretty tough at this stage? No, it isn't. It is pretty

:11:58. > :12:02.much flat all the way back. The roads get bigger and bigger as they

:12:02. > :12:08.come out of the park. Up nothing they can't cope with. No problem at

:12:08. > :12:15.all. Literally, this flat is all they have got between this and The

:12:15. > :12:18.Mall. It is go and to be close now. We desperately need another time

:12:18. > :12:28.check now for the Bradley Wiggins and Ian Stannard were closing this

:12:28. > :12:33.gap but were they doing enough? The gap is more than 30 seconds. The

:12:33. > :12:37.impetus has gone out. What is happening here, instead of a long

:12:37. > :12:40.thin are working line, they are bunching up a little bit. But the

:12:40. > :12:45.perfect scenario for Great Britain because riders are looking at each

:12:45. > :12:49.other to say, I'm not going to carry on, help me. That could be

:12:49. > :12:54.done to the advantage of Great Britain. Already coming to the

:12:54. > :13:00.front now is the rider from the Netherlands. He things, we are not

:13:00. > :13:05.going to lose this. He is now beginning to raise the tempo.

:13:05. > :13:09.has cost them dearly. That was probably 10-15 seconds they have

:13:10. > :13:14.lost, a precious advantage, while they looked at it to that. Yes, you

:13:14. > :13:19.want to win the Olympic road race, and yes, you want to use tactics

:13:19. > :13:25.but it's way too early. This 17 kilometres to go and it's too early.

:13:25. > :13:29.If they start to do that now, for sure, they will not stay awake.

:13:29. > :13:39.1972, the Netherlands were victorious there. That was in

:13:39. > :13:45.

:13:45. > :13:48.the front. A strong man. He's trying to kick the impetus here in

:13:48. > :13:55.the group. Conches other fact, every time they he's back, he's

:13:55. > :13:59.going to lose out. -- conscious of the fact. Well, there was a crash

:13:59. > :14:04.there! Some body has gone into the barriers. We will get another look

:14:04. > :14:09.at that, I hope. What a thing to happen. How many of the papers were

:14:09. > :14:14.involved there? Gilbert was not involved. He missed out on the

:14:14. > :14:20.crash. They are not sure what to do. They are going to carry on riding.

:14:20. > :14:22.I think they have no choice at this stage. It's not the Tour de France

:14:22. > :14:26.were you wait for will come Patriots to have issues, because if

:14:26. > :14:34.you wait for them now, you may as well not bother because the peloton

:14:34. > :14:41.has almost upon you. Has that lost them more time? Italy are going

:14:41. > :14:51.away. Is it Russia? The colours of Russia and Italy are very similar.

:14:51. > :14:58.

:14:58. > :15:04.Italy are in the next year. They taking this opportunity, but it is

:15:04. > :15:13.not going to happen. They are already starting to chase behind.

:15:13. > :15:17.think it is a rider from Norway. Didn't he go down questing Mikey

:15:17. > :15:26.overran the corner and went straight into the barriers. I think

:15:26. > :15:33.it was an Italian. A momentary loss of concentration. We are being told

:15:33. > :15:38.it was Fabian Cancellara. Surely not. He is a superb bike handler.

:15:38. > :15:45.Maybe he had a problem with a puncture. That would be devastating

:15:45. > :15:51.for them. He was their big hope. And it was. And he is holding his

:15:51. > :15:56.arm. He has definitely hurt himself. One of the big favourites has gone

:15:56. > :16:01.out. This is exactly what happened in the world championships 12

:16:01. > :16:07.months ago and he crashed there and was forced down into the bronze

:16:07. > :16:11.medal position. He has had a serious injury to his right arm.

:16:11. > :16:16.This is the Olympic Games, but I think it is fair to say he is out

:16:16. > :16:22.of this race. Possibly the favourite rider in that group. He

:16:22. > :16:26.is being passed by the peloton, so they are not far behind. I think

:16:26. > :16:32.that is David Mellor on the group driving them at the front. He is

:16:32. > :16:37.nicely placed. That was a back wheel slide and a front wheel slide.

:16:37. > :16:42.He goes down very hard into the barrier. That could be the end of

:16:42. > :16:47.his chances for the time-trial on Wednesday as well. That was a

:16:47. > :16:52.terrible crash for him. Looking at the possibility of an Olympic medal

:16:52. > :16:55.in the road race and to be taken out by such men so unnecessary. He

:16:55. > :17:01.locked the back wheel and over- compensated with the front wheel

:17:01. > :17:06.and was too far into the corner to recover that one. Once your front

:17:06. > :17:11.wheel goes, that is it. That has whittled down this front group and

:17:11. > :17:18.that will change the course of the race. Would you believe it, the

:17:18. > :17:26.luck changes with every pedal revolution of this race. Still

:17:26. > :17:36.plenty of Fridays there. We will try and confirm to you who is in it.

:17:36. > :17:46.Fabian Cancellara very upset. confirm Sanchez and Valverde are

:17:46. > :17:49.

:17:50. > :17:59.there. Power Lee of Italy is there. Philippe Gilbert is still up there.

:17:59. > :18:04.Stuart O'Grady is still in there as well, of Australia. There might be

:18:04. > :18:10.the rider from Uzbekistan. I am sorry we cannot be more positive,

:18:10. > :18:15.but we are getting very little information. This is the most

:18:15. > :18:20.important break away in the last four years and we need a time check.

:18:20. > :18:25.We need to see pictures of the race ahead. What is the gap between

:18:25. > :18:30.these two groups. We have seen Bradley Wiggins driving on the

:18:30. > :18:35.front. Surely it is coming down. We have seen Ian Stannard pouring his

:18:35. > :18:44.heart out to bring it back. The crash would have taken the impetus

:18:44. > :18:50.out of the break. We can only assume it has got to be close.

:18:50. > :18:55.kilometres of racing, that is six miles to go. If they do not give us

:18:55. > :19:02.eight-times split, it is as nerve- racking to us as well. They are

:19:02. > :19:08.approaching Putney High Street. Then they will be coming over

:19:09. > :19:15.Putney Bridge for the final time. Just 12 minutes of racing left in

:19:15. > :19:19.this Olympic road race. It is still all for grabs. We have to believe

:19:19. > :19:27.that the work the GB team has put in all day, they have written their

:19:27. > :19:33.heart out for Mark Cavendish, surely it is going to be close now?

:19:33. > :19:40.I thought that was the same corner! They have got to be close now. I

:19:41. > :19:46.have got to believe, we have not seen that time check. It is 56

:19:46. > :19:51.seconds. It is still the same time. If that is the case, then the

:19:51. > :19:58.leader will come from this front group. If that is the gap, then the

:19:58. > :20:02.race is over it. A lot of work being put in by Bradley Wiggins.

:20:02. > :20:08.That is the first time we have seen him in the race and he has a

:20:08. > :20:15.problem. There is a gasp in the stands behind us. Which group is he

:20:15. > :20:22.in? Is he in the group that is chasing? I think he was in the lead

:20:22. > :20:26.group. If that is the case, he will be chasing to get into that group.

:20:26. > :20:32.The winner will come from this group. Unless they start doing

:20:32. > :20:38.theirs. If they start to mess around now, they could lose all the

:20:38. > :20:48.advantage. This is a big attack, the kind of conclusion we expect

:20:48. > :20:49.

:20:49. > :20:59.from this race. That is an attack from Denmark. That was a good move,

:20:59. > :20:59.

:20:59. > :21:06.but straight away it has been regulated. Third from the front is

:21:06. > :21:11.the Kazakhstan rider, he is in the mix here as well. They sweep around

:21:11. > :21:19.these corners and the race has lost two serious players. Look at this

:21:19. > :21:25.for an attack on the leg. A downhill attack. Full of confidence.

:21:25. > :21:35.It looks like an attack from New Zealand. In fact, I think that is

:21:35. > :21:35.

:21:35. > :21:40.the Russian Kolobnev. Those two are going away beautifully. This race

:21:40. > :21:44.is going to come down to chicken and a bit of flak because there are

:21:44. > :21:52.going to be so many attacks you cannot follow all of them. Only one

:21:52. > :21:55.of them is going to get some leeway. When the group behind fault has

:21:55. > :22:02.momentarily and the gap is established, somebody has got to

:22:02. > :22:06.commit to chase. This is a good move. Seven kilometres remaining

:22:06. > :22:12.bust up these two have got to form a temporary alliance. They have got

:22:12. > :22:17.to work together if they want to see the attack. They have got

:22:17. > :22:22.enough to yo-yo a little bit. They can afford to withstand some of the

:22:22. > :22:32.attacks behind, but they cannot take any pressure off. This is

:22:32. > :22:40.

:22:40. > :22:45.their opportunity will start the Colombian is clear. I do not know

:22:45. > :22:52.too much about his sprinting ability. They are starting to look

:22:52. > :22:56.behind and that is the wrong thing to do. They have got a gap off four

:22:56. > :23:00.seconds and that is significant with seven kilometres to go. They

:23:00. > :23:10.can do it if they work together and fully commit, but if they start to

:23:10. > :23:14.

:23:14. > :23:19.look at each other, it is not going to happen. That really is a great

:23:19. > :23:23.move. We come back to the peloton desperately trying to get back on

:23:23. > :23:33.terms, but I fear it might be too late. They are doing everything

:23:33. > :23:45.

:23:45. > :23:54.they possibly can. These two are cannot recall a medal of any colour,

:23:54. > :24:04.Surrey I can, he got sulphur in Sydney. The caption confirming who

:24:04. > :24:08.

:24:08. > :24:14.these two are. -- silver. Kazakhstan rider will be happy if

:24:14. > :24:24.he gets a medal in theirs. They have got to establish that break if

:24:24. > :24:28.

:24:28. > :24:35.they want to take the prize. Fully committed. Bradley Wiggins worked

:24:35. > :24:40.incredibly hard for his team, did everything that he can. He is spent,

:24:40. > :24:47.that is his job done. We will see him on Wednesday on the Olympic

:24:47. > :24:57.time-trial. Hopefully this has not dented his form for that event.

:24:57. > :25:00.

:25:00. > :25:05.is Colombia verses Kazakhstan for the gold and silver medal. Just a

:25:05. > :25:13.handful of moments to go in this race. They have still got a slender

:25:13. > :25:18.advantage. Maybe two seconds ended with just a few kilometres

:25:18. > :25:26.remaining. They are working well together. If they start to think

:25:26. > :25:36.about the race for themselves, surely it is all over? Yes, this is

:25:36. > :25:47.

:25:47. > :25:51.the better sprinter of these two. Those behind have still not given

:25:51. > :25:57.up, and they are trying to work hard for Mark Cavendish, but there

:25:57. > :26:05.is no let up in front. I cannot believe they can come back now, not

:26:06. > :26:11.after the last time check of over 50 seconds. It is beginning to look

:26:11. > :26:20.promising for them. We are waiting to see if there is going to be a

:26:20. > :26:24.reaction from the front. It is a rider from Kazakhstan and a

:26:24. > :26:34.Colombian. At the moment they are going to contest the gold and

:26:34. > :26:34.

:26:35. > :26:38.silver medals. They are heading towards Brompton Road. The final

:26:39. > :26:44.kilometre will bring them on to Constitution Hill. Another attack,

:26:44. > :26:49.there are some tired legs in this group. But the sad news is that

:26:49. > :26:54.Great Britain team are going to miss out. They are not going to be

:26:54. > :27:00.in with a chance of a medal. Everybody else was expecting them

:27:00. > :27:05.to do all the work and left it to them. It was not going to be. There

:27:05. > :27:11.was too much work for them to do it. They are still trying as hard as

:27:11. > :27:16.they can to bring this end. This is Ian Stannard still on the front

:27:16. > :27:20.driving away. Even though we do not know what they that is, just the

:27:20. > :27:26.fact we cannot see them, six kilometres from the finish, surely

:27:26. > :27:32.that means the chance has gone now. They cannot bring that grew back.

:27:32. > :27:35.After all that work and they controlled the race, probably apart

:27:35. > :27:41.from the last three-quarters of an hour, and they have not been able

:27:41. > :27:46.to pull that grew back. They still continue to work hard, but here are

:27:46. > :27:50.the two leaders. The finishing sprint is not going to be far away

:27:50. > :27:56.now. That gap has increased significantly and that is a nice

:27:56. > :28:00.advantage. It is up to them now to be honest. Are they prepared to

:28:00. > :28:10.keep working and to keep going? If they start to think about waiting

:29:55. > :30:03.of a gap to stay away. These two, a looks across to say, who is going

:32:40. > :32:45.to get himself in shape but he blew it there by leading the work all

:32:45. > :32:49.the way to the British team. He has threatened retirement for so many

:34:21. > :34:26.they were not going to the reached. They got their head down and got

:35:52. > :35:57.What a moment for Alexander and for Kazakhstan and you could see the

:35:57. > :36:00.emotion after he crossed the line. Its day one of the Olympics and is

:36:00. > :36:05.not the first person we've seen in tears. They could be some tears

:36:05. > :36:09.from Mark Cavendish this evening. Four years ago, he was the only

:36:09. > :36:13.track cyclist not to pick up a medal at the Games and the team had

:36:13. > :36:17.spent the last two years gearing up for today, and have been up and

:36:17. > :36:22.down that hill. Mark Cavendish said he's been up and down that hill 20

:36:22. > :36:26.times. The aim was to get Mark Cavendish to the finish so he its

:36:27. > :36:30.print for gold but sadly it was not to be. Real exhausting be sought

:36:30. > :36:34.including from Bradley Wiggins and now has to race on Wednesday in the

:36:38. > :36:45.enough information on screen about the peloton attack and the leaders,

:36:45. > :36:49.so I do apologise for that but it was out of our control. There was a

:36:49. > :36:52.chance today to raise for gold in the Olympics and this is a man who

:36:52. > :36:56.has thought long and hard about retiring in the past couple of

:36:56. > :37:03.seasons. How happy he will be that he didn't. We saw in there with

:37:04. > :37:07.Jill Douglas. Let's hear what he had to say. Congratulations. This

:37:07. > :37:12.was not may be what the British public wanted but a fantastic

:37:22. > :37:30.

:37:30. > :37:40.Unbelievable. Yes, I'm tired. OK, today's race was unbelievable.

:37:40. > :37:49.

:37:49. > :37:59.Dangerous. OK, I followed the group and then attacked on the sprint. It

:37:59. > :37:59.

:37:59. > :38:09.was hot. A victory at the finish of my career. It felt like everybody

:38:09. > :38:12.

:38:12. > :38:17.was writing against Great Britain today. Yes. OK, no chance. It was

:38:17. > :38:20.quite aware all the way through a race that Team GB were left to

:38:20. > :38:27.their own devices and nobody wanted Mark Cavendish at the end because,

:38:27. > :38:32.in a sprint, he is deadly. He was not there but this man was. I don't

:38:32. > :38:38.blame him for telling Jill Douglas he was tired. He was in the saddle

:38:38. > :38:42.for five hours and 45 minutes. Tanni Grey Thompson was there and

:38:42. > :38:47.we'll be there for the women's race tomorrow. Give us some kind of

:38:47. > :38:53.sense of the atmosphere down there. We have seen a very popular winner

:38:53. > :38:57.but fair disappointment as well. mixed reaction now. There's

:38:57. > :39:00.thousands of people, everybody is elbowing their way to get to the

:39:00. > :39:04.front and you can tell how much British support there was. There

:39:04. > :39:08.was a big screen behind us and are sinners there was the final shot

:39:08. > :39:13.Bradley Wiggins, there was a massive cheer from the crowd. It's

:39:13. > :39:17.been amazing, a very exciting race. There is a sense of disappointment

:39:17. > :39:22.because, I think we were expecting Mark Cavendish to win. Even when

:39:22. > :39:26.the gap got to six minutes, nobody was panicking. But they just left

:39:26. > :39:31.the British guys to do all the work and nobody was going to help him to

:39:32. > :39:36.the gold medal. One thing we must mention about Mark Cavendish, the

:39:36. > :39:40.Games have been so good to you. For Mark, they had been so cruel,

:39:40. > :39:44.haven't they? He struggled so much in Beijing leaving without a medal

:39:44. > :39:48.and the same today. There doesn't seem to be a love affair between

:39:48. > :39:52.him and the Olympic movement. very hard and it doesn't make it

:39:52. > :39:56.any better when you say these things sometimes happen. It was

:39:56. > :40:00.very hard in Beijing, the only guide to come back without a medal.

:40:00. > :40:03.I think also, with the world championships last year, the rest

:40:03. > :40:08.of the world was watching how the British performed in the Tour. They

:40:08. > :40:12.knew that the weakness was actually just to leave them to do all the

:40:12. > :40:19.work. There was a tiny bit of help from Tony Martin in the German team.

:40:19. > :40:23.They had Andre Greipel, who they want to get to the finish line so

:40:23. > :40:30.it was down to the boys. Ian Stannard was great, Chris Froome,

:40:30. > :40:35.Bradley Wiggins, but they needed more guys to help mark. We must say

:40:35. > :40:40.congratulations to Alexander. The good news is, your top has

:40:40. > :40:45.brightened up everybody's mood. We will see you tomorrow. A thank

:40:45. > :40:49.you very much. What a strange race that was in many ways and the drama

:40:49. > :40:59.is part of a busy day one as the Games begin right across the

:40:59. > :41:03.country. As we have seen, two years in the planning, not even the

:41:03. > :41:10.presence of the winner of the Tour de France could propel him to glory.

:41:10. > :41:15.Well done Kazakhstan. Well-earned and well deserved gold Medal. It's

:41:15. > :41:17.been a busy day in the pool as well. Hannah Miley is a plea through to

:41:17. > :41:26.the final of the 400 metres individual medley. The Commonwealth

:41:26. > :41:29.champion will be trying to get an Olympic medal at 8:10pm tonight.

:41:35. > :41:41.of 400 metres. He will be in the outside lane for tonight's final

:41:41. > :41:44.and his rival is the great Ryan Lochte. It's also been a good day

:41:49. > :41:57.Team GB ahead of the Olympic champions, China, and that is no

:13:18. > :13:22.match points but now it is going to go the distance and we will be back

:13:22. > :13:25.on Centre Court very soon. But we are going to go back to the big

:13:25. > :13:29.story of the day. Halve mav was hoping to claim Britain's first

:13:29. > :13:35.gold medal of these games but it wasn't the dream start for kav and

:13:35. > :13:42.his fans, because the British team, they couldn't keep one the leading

:13:42. > :13:45.pack and Cavendish finished out of the medals. The gold went to

:13:45. > :13:50.Vinokurov. Let us hear from Mark Vinokurov. Let us hear from Mark

:13:50. > :13:54.Cavendish. I know, how bitterly disappointed you are, your team

:13:54. > :13:59.could do no more for you, at times it seemed the rest of the world was

:13:59. > :14:04.up against Great Britain. We knew it was going to be like that,

:14:04. > :14:10.coming into it. We said we will do our race as we want to do it. See

:14:10. > :14:15.what happens, like you said it seems like most teams, they are

:14:15. > :14:19.happy not to win ass long as we don't win. That is the story of our

:14:19. > :14:25.life in cycling. It show what is a strong nation we are, we have to

:14:25. > :14:31.take positives from that and take it as a compliment. But it is

:14:31. > :14:35.disappointing. We couldn't, 70 guys in there, in our group at the

:14:35. > :14:39.finish. I don't understand why there is three guys riding. It

:14:39. > :14:44.donth don't make sense. Well done your team-mate, they looked like

:14:44. > :14:49.they had left it out on the road. Incredible. I couldn't be more

:14:49. > :14:56.proud. They are spent. They are still sat in the tent. They are

:14:56. > :15:00.just absolutely spent. Just rode 250k, going 60k an hour for the

:15:00. > :15:04.last hour. I am so proud. What about the crowd on the road there,

:15:04. > :15:09.so many people have Mark Cavendish masks on, the Union Jack is flying,

:15:09. > :15:13.near on one million people, it must have been emotional. All our ears

:15:13. > :15:18.are ringing, we don't pick up on individuals, we hear a noise all

:15:18. > :15:23.the way here, that was tremendous, the whole way round, it was, it was

:15:23. > :15:26.something I will remember for ever. Everybody knew you are the best

:15:26. > :15:30.sprinter in the world. When it came to here, you were the most likely

:15:30. > :15:35.winner, are we victims of the British cycling team success?

:15:35. > :15:40.Absolutely. That is all we can put it down to, no-one wants to help us,

:15:40. > :15:45.the Australians sit there, they always just ride negatively as well,

:15:45. > :15:50.you know. They had one guy who wasn't going to win but they sat

:15:50. > :15:54.there and didn't want to sprint. I would like to say that is how it

:15:54. > :16:00.goes but it is disappointing. We did everything, like, it is one of

:16:00. > :16:03.those things, we can't make kphuest excuse, we did everything, all the

:16:03. > :16:09.guys, the guys, they were incredible, to see the guys with

:16:09. > :16:19.the calibre they have got, just riding like that for me, it is

:16:19. > :16:21.

:16:21. > :16:28.just... Olympics and Mark Cavendish We will see, you know. We don't

:16:28. > :16:33.know. I tell you, it is ironic, I looked on the team pursuit this

:16:33. > :16:38.year and could not do it because I have not done it at the World Cup,

:16:38. > :16:47.yet fans were able to enter a track sprinter for the road race who has

:16:47. > :16:53.never done a road race in his life. Something has messed up there. But,

:16:53. > :16:58.we haven't got a medal. I am completely proud of my team and

:16:58. > :17:03.proud of my country for the support if we had. A team pursuit sometime

:17:03. > :17:08.in the future? I am getting too old for it. It is my last chance.

:17:08. > :17:11.you for your time, cheers, Mark. Such disappointment for Mark

:17:11. > :17:15.Cavendish. He talked about his team-mates giving their all,

:17:15. > :17:18.including Bradley Wiggins, who will be back on when stake. It is the

:17:19. > :17:24.women's race tomorrow with Lizzie Armitstead and Nicole Cooke going,

:17:24. > :17:27.but tomorrow. That was the news from The Mall earlier today. We are

:17:28. > :17:34.heading back to Wimbledon, Centre Court. Roger Federer looked like he

:17:34. > :17:40.was saving through his earlier round with Alejandro Falla, but he

:17:40. > :17:47.has dropped the second set. It is the first game of the final set.

:17:47. > :17:57.Nuts rejoined John Lydon and Andrew Cassell. -- let's rejoin John Lloyd

:17:57. > :18:10.

:18:10. > :18:15.It is wide, it is going to be a challenge but Federer is walking

:18:15. > :18:23.towards the umpire's chair. He thinks the ball is out and it is in

:18:23. > :18:32.fact a break. It has been cracked wide. Federer gets the break of

:18:32. > :18:39.John Lloyd, any explanation as to what happened at the end of the

:18:39. > :18:45.second set? Obviously totally unexpected. Roger was one step into

:18:45. > :18:50.the locker room mentally himself, thought it was all over at love-40

:18:50. > :18:55.and Falla came back and after that it was not Federer's fault. Falla

:18:55. > :18:59.just did not miss and Roger got tight at the end of the set, missed

:18:59. > :19:03.a couple of balls and unfortunately for Falla, after winning the second

:19:03. > :19:13.set he got over-excited in the first service game and was a bit

:19:13. > :19:23.

:19:23. > :19:26.But it has been an excellent mixture of pace and spin from Falla.

:19:26. > :19:36.He has been giving so many different looks to Federer. He has

:19:36. > :20:03.

:20:03. > :20:09.come in now and again, got a high The second time we have seen that,

:20:09. > :20:19.Federer has had to volley on the baseline. The ground stroke pace of

:20:19. > :20:37.

:20:37. > :20:47.Just left enough down the line that Falla had to go there. Federer is

:24:25. > :24:29.That keeps the match alive. If Falla had dropped that service game

:24:29. > :24:35.he could have been out of the tournament but he is still in it.
