:00:06. > :00:12.me some time! That would be something!

:00:12. > :00:17.Let us get on with our most successful games for 140 years. By

:00:17. > :00:21.Sunday 2000 athletes will have competed in the Olympic Stadium

:00:21. > :00:31.across 47 events in the athletics. Now it is the turn of the women in

:00:31. > :00:32.

:00:32. > :00:37.the 800m. Here is good to look out Caster Semenya makes her first

:00:37. > :00:43.appearance at the Games, after a difficult 18 months. The Olympic

:00:43. > :00:53.champion over 800m is back. Pamela Jim Neil Lowe was just 18 when she

:00:53. > :00:53.

:00:53. > :00:57.one the title in Beijing -- Pamela Jelimo. A controversial selection

:00:57. > :01:04.means that Lynsey Sharp needs a good performance here, despite

:01:04. > :01:10.taking silver in the world championships. Individual medals on

:01:10. > :01:14.offer in the showjumping. Not even a broken neck and a hip replacement.

:01:14. > :01:21.54-year-old Nick Skelton. Nicola Adams is already guaranteed a medal

:01:21. > :01:29.in boxing. At 1:45pm, she faces five-time world lightweight

:01:29. > :01:33.champion at Mary Kom. The capacity crowd at the Olympic Stadium has

:01:33. > :01:39.had a lot to cheer about this morning. Sophie Hitchon got a new

:01:39. > :01:47.British record, Daniel Awde ran a personal best in the 100m, and Mo

:01:47. > :01:51.Farah has qualified for the 5,000m. Get in. Let's go to the track. Is

:01:51. > :01:59.there time before the heats of the 800m to talk about the

:01:59. > :02:03.extraordinary events in the pole vault? It does look very dramatic,

:02:03. > :02:13.but I imagine there is not an athlete out there who has not had

:02:13. > :02:14.

:02:14. > :02:20.one of their polls snap at some point. It is a dangerous event.

:02:20. > :02:25.Thankfully, the Cuban athlete is OK. That could cause a nasty injury.

:02:25. > :02:34.can be quite off-putting as well. Now they have to get a brand new

:02:34. > :02:41.pole vault and start off again. It is a difficult thing. The women's

:02:41. > :02:47.800m is up next. Caster Semenya, cast our mind back to 2009, all the

:02:47. > :02:53.issues around her, whether she could compete as a woman or not.

:02:53. > :02:58.Obviously she can but she has not been the same athlete since then.

:02:58. > :03:02.Something about global humiliation has affected her. I think it has

:03:02. > :03:07.affected her state of mind and her performance, but it is good to see

:03:07. > :03:17.her here. She has not been in good form but let's see what she is able

:03:17. > :03:39.

:03:39. > :03:46.to do. Brendan Foster and Paul Caster Semenya from South Africa in

:03:46. > :03:53.lane eight. One of the most talked about athletes in recent years.

:03:53. > :04:02.World champion in 2009. She has had a couple of lean years since then.

:04:02. > :04:10.She is back in shape. She has run under two minutes this year. She

:04:10. > :04:17.carried the South African flag during the opening ceremony.

:04:17. > :04:22.Montano, 26 years old. Her last appearance was at the Monaco

:04:22. > :04:32.Diamond League, where she finished in third place in a very quick race,

:04:32. > :04:39.

:04:39. > :04:43.and she is the American champion over the last 40 minutes, maybe a

:04:43. > :04:49.degree less than it was, but good conditions for track and field this

:04:49. > :04:59.morning. Once again, we have a packed stadium. A lot of them will

:04:59. > :05:14.

:05:14. > :05:24.be watching Caster Semenya for the right for once. Here we go. Heat

:05:24. > :05:51.

:05:51. > :05:57.ahead of everybody. She is going too quickly, and she is especially

:05:57. > :06:07.going too quickly in a heat. The first three to qualify and the

:06:07. > :06:18.

:06:18. > :06:25.three fastest losers. She should as strong as it was. -- Caster

:06:25. > :06:32.Semenya. That was far too quick for Montano. I would not be surprised

:06:32. > :06:39.if that was too fast even for a final. I am not sure I have ever

:06:39. > :06:49.seen a lead of 400m in an 800m race ever as big as that. She is now

:06:49. > :07:09.

:07:10. > :07:19.group as well, Almanza, just 20 years old. Caster Semenya using her

:07:20. > :07:34.

:07:34. > :07:43.Goodness only knows what she was doing. Caster Semenya ran well. But

:07:43. > :07:50.the winner, 64 seconds for the second lap, 64.9. This is how not

:07:50. > :07:55.to run an 800m race. You set off, go quickly, and from this point on,

:07:55. > :08:05.you slow down. That is a silly tactic because it makes you more

:08:05. > :08:17.

:08:17. > :08:27.tired than you need to be. Caster setting a pace. -- the 800m. Caster

:08:27. > :08:34.

:08:34. > :08:39.third have had a much easier ride than the Montano from the United

:08:39. > :08:48.States. I think her coach needs to talk to her. That is not the way to

:08:48. > :08:53.run 800m. The American is more tired now then Caster Semenya. She

:08:53. > :09:03.really punished herself in that first heat. Caster Semenya looked

:09:03. > :09:08.wonderful in second place. We will have to see if Almanza can go

:09:08. > :09:18.through as the fastest loser. Ashdon eating, under eight metres

:09:18. > :09:24.

:09:24. > :09:33.eight metres but it is a red flag. Daniel Awde pacing around in the

:09:33. > :09:40.background. He got a foul in the first round. Frustration for Ashton

:09:40. > :09:50.Eton but certainly in the lead in the decathlon at the moment. A good

:09:50. > :10:02.

:10:02. > :10:09.100m in the first round. Daniel experienced this sort of support in

:10:09. > :10:16.the past. He has got another foul. Under all sorts of pressure, after

:10:16. > :10:23.such a fantastic start earlier on this morning in the 100m. I am

:10:23. > :10:33.wondering if he is hurting. Daniel Awde has got it all to do in the

:10:33. > :10:38.

:10:38. > :10:48.third round. He must get a mark on are really out of sorts for most of

:10:48. > :11:00.

:11:00. > :11:06.this year, but that was much better. Lewis, having gone clear at 5.50

:11:06. > :11:15.first time. You saw what a good sprinter Damian Warner was earlier

:11:15. > :11:23.on. He ran well under 11 seconds. What has he got in the long jump?

:11:24. > :11:30.Could effort. He likes it. The crowd like it -- good effort. There

:11:30. > :11:37.are two at swimming pools in this decathlon -- two Paul's in this

:11:37. > :11:47.decathlon. One started a good well after. That is why we have seen two

:11:47. > :12:17.

:12:17. > :12:21.chums from Daniel Awde. -- John year and she won more easily than

:12:21. > :12:28.anybody expected, the world champion. She has raced fairly

:12:28. > :12:32.lightly this year. We have only seen her once on the circuit in the

:12:32. > :12:42.Diamond League. She has raced in Russia once since then, working on

:12:42. > :13:09.

:13:09. > :13:14.hair but it was a special one on this occasion. It was in honour of

:13:14. > :13:24.her grandmother's one hundredth birthday. And beautiful it looks,

:13:24. > :13:30.

:13:30. > :13:36.too. Happy birthday to her little bit more vigour! And why not.

:13:36. > :13:46.I was just chatting to Brendan, when you compare these heats to the

:13:46. > :13:53.

:13:53. > :14:02.first round in the men's, the Schmitt of the USA. Top three will

:14:02. > :14:07.go through. There are two or three decent athletes in each race and

:14:07. > :14:17.qualification, as you probably saw for the first heat, for the better

:14:17. > :14:19.

:14:19. > :14:22.athletes is fairly comfortable. This lady, Nemra, carried the flag

:14:22. > :14:32.for the Marshall Islands in the opening ceremony, but this will be

:14:32. > :14:42.

:14:42. > :14:52.Marshall Islands? I think somewhere in the southern oceans... LAUGHTER.

:14:52. > :14:56.

:14:56. > :15:02.As opposed to the northern oceans. Marshall Islands in the Olympic

:15:02. > :15:12.Games, which will come to me at one point. I am being told near micron

:15:12. > :15:41.

:15:41. > :15:51.just pulling up injured. It is quite an easy qualification. Aydin

:15:51. > :15:51.

:15:51. > :15:59.injured. We will be interested just to get a bit of a guide as to who

:15:59. > :16:09.is in good form. It is good for the athletes just to get used to the

:16:09. > :16:12.

:16:12. > :16:22.arena and get used to the crowd. Savinova looks comfortable, looks

:16:22. > :16:37.

:16:37. > :16:47.strong. Tintu Luka, I think she did it! There are just six fastest

:16:47. > :16:55.

:16:55. > :17:05.loser spots. And that was quite a slow heat. Akkaoui might have been

:17:05. > :17:06.

:17:06. > :17:16.run out of it there. Schmidt looking good. Luka coming down the

:17:16. > :17:22.

:17:22. > :17:32.outside. This is a good finish from Luka. Does she get their? I think

:17:32. > :17:42.

:17:42. > :17:46.she does. Akkaoui in pain all the way round.

:17:46. > :17:51.She came to the Olympic Games and she wanted to finish and fair play

:17:51. > :18:01.to her. She is in tears but she has been through her Olympic experience

:18:01. > :18:08.

:18:08. > :18:18.and no one can deny you that. Savinova looking comfortable.

:18:18. > :18:20.

:18:20. > :18:30.Schmidt comfortable in second place. Then Luka coming through with a

:18:30. > :18:36.

:18:36. > :18:41.good run eventually. It was pretty good run eventually. It was pretty

:18:41. > :18:47.easy as a qualification run. Well as you saw their it is not

:18:47. > :18:52.just about the winning but about the taking part. A bit of a

:18:52. > :18:56.surprise from Sophie Hitchon earlier. Rhys says surprise but she

:18:56. > :19:02.has been throwing very well. She has been consistent and is a great

:19:02. > :19:11.technician. Look at that reaction, she knows the hammer has gone out

:19:11. > :19:15.to what end up being her best throat ever. The surprise, we do

:19:15. > :19:21.seek athletes come to Championships with a great personal best and they

:19:21. > :19:25.never produce it when they come here. It is difficult and first

:19:25. > :19:28.thing in the morning as well, if you think about it. Even when you

:19:28. > :19:34.train in the morning you do not really have to do a personal best,

:19:34. > :19:40.it is just about preparation. So to see British records at this time of

:19:40. > :19:46.the day is a wonderful thing. actually lies in its 5th place and

:19:46. > :19:51.if she is in the top 12, she will make the final.

:19:51. > :19:55.We are certainly enjoying the British records. Now Greenwich Park

:19:55. > :20:05.has been wonderful for our equestrian team in the past week.

:20:05. > :20:15.Two gold medals and a silver. Today it is every horse and rider for

:20:15. > :20:18.

:20:18. > :20:22.themselves. Clare Balding is therefore as now.

:20:22. > :20:27.I'm here with 20,000 people in the stands at Greenwich. All waiting

:20:27. > :20:31.for the start of the individual competition at 12 o'clock. We have

:20:31. > :20:36.37 riders going through to the first round. They all start again

:20:36. > :20:40.from scratch. Those that are leading after the first round, the

:20:41. > :20:44.top 20 go through to another jumping round this afternoon. Then

:20:44. > :20:54.if there is untidy goal against the clock in a jump off. The course is

:20:54. > :20:55.

:20:55. > :21:05.enormous. This is a big start. And off they go, 12 fences in total. A

:21:05. > :21:09.

:21:09. > :21:12.maximum height of 5 ft 3. It really is going to take a lot of jumping.

:21:12. > :21:18.The British course designer, Ben Ellis, has just made sure that

:21:18. > :21:24.these have got bigger and bigger. Nick Skelton, who would be our

:21:24. > :21:30.leading chance, and he is going to jump right towards the end. He said

:21:30. > :21:36.his force makes them feel as if he is a little boy again. He says the

:21:36. > :21:41.animal can do anything, he can stretch out, reached over fences.

:21:41. > :21:48.He is not fazed by the crowd. He has got so much energy and he is

:21:48. > :21:53.relatively young at nine years old. Nick Skelton just has massive

:21:53. > :21:59.belief in him. So that combination, they are not many sports that would

:21:59. > :22:03.give you that as a team. So and think Nick Skelton is coming out

:22:03. > :22:08.here thinking he could win an individual gold medal. There's just

:22:08. > :22:13.a bit of a sense that he needs to put something right. In Athens he

:22:13. > :22:22.went into the final round believing he could win the gold medal and for

:22:22. > :22:31.the first time in the whole week, he had fences down. But he now

:22:31. > :22:36.thinks this is his moment to put that right. Anti is riding for gold.

:22:36. > :22:41.What an update that was. And there's a 65 year-old Canadian

:22:41. > :22:46.riding. All eyes on Greenwich park shortly. We now head over to the

:22:46. > :22:53.Olympic Stadium for the third heat Olympic Stadium for the third heat

:22:53. > :22:58.of the women's 800m. We have three athletes who have not

:22:58. > :23:08.turned up for this third heat. And three of the fastest athletes who

:23:08. > :23:15.

:23:15. > :23:25.were going to run this morning. The first three well qualified for

:23:25. > :23:26.

:23:26. > :23:36.the semi-finals tomorrow. The athlete on the inside, and she had

:23:36. > :23:41.

:23:41. > :23:51.her lead leg right over at the start line. It was not a false

:23:51. > :24:13.

:24:13. > :24:19.start, just inexperience. A green card for Bakhit. Magiso of Ethiopia

:24:19. > :24:29.is not there, which is a disappointment. Me Atkinson, her

:24:29. > :24:29.

:24:29. > :25:15.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 45 seconds

:25:15. > :25:25.her life at the moment. And this is really good to see. Shumi is

:25:25. > :25:33.

:25:33. > :25:38.leading. Niyonsaba, her fifth ever race. She is not experienced but

:25:38. > :25:47.she is a real talent. Look at the way she just accelerated. But she

:25:47. > :25:53.is running a little bit like a novice. Let us see it that young

:25:54. > :26:03.talent... Look at her, all over the place. They do not need to fight

:26:04. > :26:13.

:26:13. > :26:22.for the finish. Shumi there. And what an experience for Amy Atkinson.

:26:22. > :26:28.That is a personal best for her. Over on the far side of the arena,

:26:28. > :26:34.the decathlon Long jump continues with Daniel Awde. The emotions must

:26:34. > :26:42.be racing around in his head at the moment. A big personal best

:26:42. > :26:51.performance in the 100m. Then he started his first round jump and

:26:51. > :27:00.got a foul. Same with the second. So does he now plays Safer? Or does

:27:00. > :27:09.he go flat out? To try to stay in the hunt for what would be an

:27:09. > :27:19.amazing performance this morning after two events. His coach, a very

:27:19. > :27:19.

:27:19. > :27:29.experienced multi- events coach. And the next man up on the runway

:27:29. > :27:30.

:27:31. > :27:40.is Daniel Order of Great Britain. - - Daniel Awde. Maybe he is going to

:27:41. > :27:44.

:27:44. > :27:54.go for it. He is a decent long jumper. Well behind the board on

:27:54. > :28:17.

:28:18. > :28:23.this occasion. He has suffered in looks of it. That is about 60

:28:24. > :28:33.points altogether that he has lost with that last round jump. But we

:28:34. > :28:37.

:28:37. > :28:44.will have to get an update on his knee.

:28:44. > :28:54.Ashton Eaton, such a good long jumper when he gets it right. That

:28:54. > :28:57.

:28:57. > :29:07.is a great effort. It looked OK. White flag. Spot on, that could not

:29:07. > :29:11.

:29:11. > :29:17.have been any better. And that is a good second event for

:29:17. > :29:27.him after a solid start in the 100m. Eight metres and three. Good points

:29:27. > :29:41.

:29:41. > :29:46.for the American. Niyonsaba getting heat number three.

:29:46. > :29:56.Goodness knows what is wrong with Daniel Ord. Obviously a problem

:29:56. > :30:01.

:30:01. > :30:11.with his left knee. It is a tough first day. The pole vault looked

:30:11. > :30:18.

:30:18. > :30:28.wonderful. 5.70 required to go through to the final. Looking good.

:30:28. > :30:40.

:30:40. > :30:45.He is just working out, seeing how Sharp of Edinburgh, selected on a B

:30:45. > :30:48.standard of athletes who had the A standard, but they didn't win the

:30:48. > :30:53.trials and go to the European Championships and win a medal. So

:30:53. > :30:57.Lynsey Sharp is our sole representative in the first round

:30:57. > :31:02.of the 800. They have been varied heats. I think she can get through

:31:02. > :31:12.this one, but she might have to run one of the best races she has ever

:31:12. > :31:37.

:31:37. > :31:43.run. She has a good pace, and that these athletes. But then you have

:31:43. > :31:52.the experience of others. The Ukrainian is pretty good at getting

:31:53. > :32:00.through rounds. She made it to the final four years ago. She is 31 now,

:32:00. > :32:08.though. But none will be tougher than this

:32:08. > :32:15.young lady here, number-one in the world and the defending champion.

:32:15. > :32:19.She became Kenya's first Olympic champion four years ago, and was

:32:19. > :32:24.somebody who -- she will be somebody who Lynsey Sharp will be

:32:24. > :32:30.watching carefully. Looks a little nervous, and she is bound to be.

:32:30. > :32:36.First three to go through. There are fastest loser spots available.

:32:36. > :32:43.If things do not go right, she will be hoping Pamela Jelimo takes it at

:32:43. > :32:50.a steady pace. Lynsey Sharp has a chance of going through to fastest

:32:50. > :33:00.loser if she does not finish in the top three. The overall standard has

:33:00. > :33:02.

:33:02. > :33:07.not been great. Pamela Jelimo heads them out. Lynsey Sharp will follow.

:33:07. > :33:13.She will be happy that it is slow, because she has got pace to burn.

:33:13. > :33:16.Our am delighted to see Lynsey Sharp in these Olympic Games. She

:33:16. > :33:20.got a silver medal in the European Championships, as her father did,

:33:20. > :33:29.Cameron Sharp, 30 years earlier. She was selected because of what

:33:29. > :33:36.she did in the trials. That European run was a good one. The

:33:36. > :33:43.Olympic champion, Pamela Jelimo, behind the front-runner. It is

:33:43. > :33:47.quick in the front. Lynsey Sharp is just over 60 seconds. She is in a

:33:47. > :33:57.qualifying position already. She has taken up an interesting

:33:57. > :34:05.position. One of her big rivals has stepped off the track. That means

:34:05. > :34:12.the top three are pulling away. The second from the American trials is

:34:12. > :34:16.way off the pace. Lynsey Sharp is running very well. These three can

:34:16. > :34:23.pretty much take it easy from here. The crowd are doing a great job,

:34:23. > :34:27.lifting Lynsey Sharp. They are enjoying this. She just has a

:34:27. > :34:32.little glance at the screen at the far end and maybe realises there is

:34:32. > :34:36.no point in trying to run with Pamela Jelimo. It is an easy win

:34:36. > :34:44.for the Kenyan, as you would expect, but a solid performance for Lynsey

:34:44. > :34:53.Sharp in second place. This is exactly what Lynsey Sharp would

:34:53. > :34:55.have wanted. Very good indeed. The American was very poor. In the end,

:34:55. > :34:59.qualification was fairly straightforward. She would have

:34:59. > :35:04.been nervous when she looked at the start list, but she had no need to

:35:04. > :35:09.be. She acquitted herself extremely well. That was an impressive

:35:09. > :35:12.performance. It was good for her to come on to the Olympic stage with

:35:12. > :35:18.an opportunity like that. She must have been nervous about the other

:35:18. > :35:25.runners. The American is a much better athlete than she showed

:35:25. > :35:29.today. But Lynsey Sharp, coming round the bend, was looking

:35:29. > :35:35.comfortable and strong. She has a good style. She is strong in the

:35:35. > :35:40.finishing straight. She was working at it and every bit at home on the

:35:40. > :35:46.Olympic stage. Having gone through the performance of going through

:35:46. > :35:52.the systems here and learning what it is about, she handled herself

:35:52. > :35:57.very well. It will be great for her to look forward with confidence to

:35:57. > :36:02.the semi-final. She is our only representative in the 800m. Let's

:36:02. > :36:12.hope we can see her work her way into the semi-final and maybe into

:36:12. > :36:13.

:36:13. > :36:17.That was an accomplished performance. Massive crowd cheering

:36:17. > :36:22.you on. How did you keep your nurse in check at the Stade? I came to

:36:22. > :36:26.watch a couple of nights ago to get used to it. But I don't think you

:36:26. > :36:30.can be ready for when you are on the track. When I was running, I

:36:30. > :36:34.had this ringing in my left ear because the crowd were so loud it.

:36:34. > :36:39.It was good, because it made me forget everything and just get to

:36:39. > :36:44.the finish. Obviously, the whole selection process added pressure on

:36:44. > :36:47.you. Did you feel that today? have said all along that I have

:36:47. > :36:52.tried to block it out and not take it as added pressure. The media

:36:52. > :36:57.hasn't helped, but I tried to concentrate on my race. I have had

:36:57. > :37:01.some good training in the last month. All along, you have had a

:37:01. > :37:06.tremendous season, despite the furore around you. Silver medal at

:37:06. > :37:11.the European Championships and then coming here. You are only 22 and

:37:11. > :37:16.dealing with all that. Yeah, I would not be here without my coach.

:37:16. > :37:26.I have rarely grown as an athlete in the past year. I trust him

:37:26. > :37:28.

:37:28. > :37:38.implicitly. You looked like you ringing in her ear is Brendan

:37:38. > :37:45.

:37:45. > :37:49.Foster. She needs to answer it next distressed and limping a bit as

:37:49. > :37:53.well after that long jump competition. After such a promising

:37:53. > :37:59.start in the 100m, he is still in there and we will update you on his

:37:59. > :38:03.fitness as soon as we can. It is certainly a worry. We hope he can

:38:03. > :38:11.get to the physios and they can sort that out and he can carry on.

:38:11. > :38:15.It would be a shame if he had to Lynsey Sharp got through

:38:15. > :38:19.comfortably, but you got an idea from that interview of the pressure

:38:19. > :38:24.when on her mind? She has had a lot to contend with. A lot of

:38:24. > :38:29.discussion about whether she should or should not be in. But her

:38:29. > :38:35.interview was very measured. She ran brilliantly. She put herself in

:38:35. > :38:40.the right position at the right time and was able to strike. She

:38:40. > :38:45.got a very good time. She will grow from this experience. She will

:38:45. > :38:49.learn what it takes to deal with these types of early-morning starts

:38:49. > :38:53.and go from strength to strength. column, it was a strong statement

:38:53. > :38:59.by Charles van Commenee and the selection panel to say we will take

:38:59. > :39:03.a B standard athlete when we have four with an A standard. Ind Justin

:39:03. > :39:09.decision, but it seems to have paid off -- it was an interesting

:39:09. > :39:14.decision, but it has paid off. We have faith silver medallist here,

:39:14. > :39:18.so she has a just place in this team. Her mother and father were

:39:18. > :39:24.international athletes. One was an 800m runner, her mother, and

:39:24. > :39:29.Cameron was a sprinter. She can tap into that as a resource. She is in

:39:29. > :39:33.a luxurious position anyway, and she is carrying that forward. She

:39:33. > :39:37.seems very comfortable in this environment. I don't think anything

:39:37. > :39:42.challenged her there. We know Pamela Jelimo is out there on her

:39:43. > :39:47.own, but Lynsey Sharp did well. did it. It shows that Charles had

:39:47. > :39:52.faith in her. He knew she was able to deal with this. The way she ran

:39:52. > :39:56.in the trials, backed up with the European silver medal, he said, you

:39:56. > :40:00.deserve your place. The other girls didn't do enough to impress me.

:40:00. > :40:04.saw Daniel Awde walking off to see the physio after struggling with

:40:04. > :40:10.the long jump. He brilliantly started the 100m with a personal

:40:10. > :40:17.best, but clearly has a problem. had both his knees taped, so that

:40:17. > :40:22.suggests some tendonitis or something brought about by jumping.

:40:22. > :40:29.Demotion of being here, the crowd supporting him, maybe cost him

:40:29. > :40:39.those two fouls on the first two jumps. It does not look good, but

:40:39. > :40:39.

:40:39. > :41:35.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 45 seconds

:41:35. > :41:45.indoors. This will be a real battle for her. Show the green card,

:41:45. > :41:49.

:41:49. > :41:59.please. That just means, don't do it again. Heat five of the women's

:41:59. > :42:00.

:42:00. > :42:10.800m. The Russian, as you would expect, she has gone off quite

:42:10. > :42:19.

:42:19. > :42:23.quickly. She has already rocketed because the athlete from Kenya is a

:42:23. > :42:28.young lady, 19 years of age. She was sixth in the Kenyan trials,

:42:28. > :42:32.which would normally not select your, but because the second person

:42:32. > :42:36.had not done the qualifying time, they put her in and gave her the

:42:36. > :42:40.chance of running on the world stage. She was the 2009 world youth

:42:40. > :42:46.champion. The young Kenyan athletes these days can often be very good.

:42:46. > :42:52.We will see if she has the same talent that we think she has. Elena

:42:52. > :42:58.Arzhakova of Russia is leading. She will be dangerous in this race. It

:42:58. > :43:01.is a very slow opening 400m. Presumably, the reason Elena

:43:01. > :43:11.Arzhakova got to the front quickly was because she wanted to control

:43:11. > :43:17.

:43:17. > :43:21.it. 68.7 for the first lap. Now the pace will wind up just a little bit.

:43:21. > :43:31.There are six athletes at the front at the moment, still being led by

:43:31. > :43:34.

:43:34. > :43:43.Elena Arzhakova of Russia. Detour Ukrainian -- the tall Ukrainian is

:43:43. > :43:50.in fifth place. Not looking too good. Then you have got Bishop of

:43:50. > :43:59.Canada. Elena Arzhakova struggling a bit, but finds a gap on their

:43:59. > :44:09.inside and sprints to the front. The front three will probably make

:44:09. > :44:16.

:44:16. > :44:24.it through. After a very slow start. That is another way of not running

:44:24. > :44:34.the 800m. We saw earlier, and now we can see the Palestinian

:44:34. > :44:36.

:44:36. > :44:43.finishing. I don't think she was close to her best time. Elena

:44:43. > :44:53.Arzhakova of Russia help but inside position. -- she held that inside

:44:53. > :45:03.position. It looked as though the three would qualify quickly, but

:45:03. > :45:06.

:45:06. > :45:13.then the young Kenyan faded. But the three athletes crossed the line.

:45:13. > :45:16.68 for the first lap, just under 60 seconds for the second lap. I don't

:45:16. > :45:21.think the final will be run anything like that. Sometimes it is

:45:21. > :45:24.difficult when you go to slow in the first lap. Some of these

:45:24. > :45:28.athletes are much better at the longer distance than the shorter

:45:28. > :45:38.distance. But Elena Arzhakova would think herself fortunate to get

:45:38. > :46:01.

:46:01. > :46:08.through this. The gap opened on the for some while. -- a new lifetime

:46:08. > :46:17.best for Sawalha. Let's listen to this conversation. There are five

:46:17. > :46:21.of us. If the Spanish guy doesn't jump... The trade union of pole

:46:21. > :46:26.vaulters has got together, the meeting has been convened. Steve

:46:26. > :46:31.Walker, the general secretary, has decided that enough might be enough.

:46:31. > :46:37.These guys, with their first-time clearances at 5.50, Steve Lewis

:46:37. > :46:42.included, are trying to persuade the powers that be that enough is

:46:42. > :46:46.enough. I would have thought Steve Hooker would at least have been the

:46:46. > :46:52.chairman, not just to the Secretary. Isn't the general secretary more

:46:52. > :46:58.important? I think he was the shop steward. Steve Lewis, the British

:46:59. > :47:02.record holder, strolling around in the background. He will be happy to

:47:02. > :47:12.get out of the stadium and get mentally prepared for Friday's

:47:12. > :47:20.

:47:20. > :47:26.could push Sophie Hitchon down to 6th place, and she has done it. The

:47:26. > :47:33.Asian record holder, a very fine athlete indeed. That is one of the

:47:33. > :47:43.longest throws we have seen this morning. In the previous pool,

:47:43. > :47:54.

:47:54. > :48:03.Flora chip was the best -- of our a new British record, 71.98. Zhang,

:48:03. > :48:09.74.53. Sophie Hitchon is down in 6th position. We haven't seen too

:48:09. > :48:15.much. She accelerates quite nicely, a bit of balance at the end.

:48:15. > :48:19.Another athlete that puts one over the 73 metres mark. I think the 73

:48:20. > :48:27.metres that the organisers asking for qualification is the longest

:48:27. > :48:36.qualifying distance I have ever seen. Bending that left leg, but

:48:36. > :48:42.staying nicely on balance. That is another athlete who would push

:48:42. > :48:47.Sophie Hitchon down a place. It will only be the top wolf who will

:48:47. > :48:57.go through to the final. Sophie is hanging on in their -- only the top

:48:57. > :49:05.

:49:05. > :49:15.13 have gone Claire. Seven and then another six your tide -- have gone

:49:15. > :49:16.

:49:16. > :49:19.clear. It would make a total of 13. Another six who are tied. They are

:49:20. > :49:28.saying, surely we don't need to carry on, take 13 through to the

:49:28. > :49:38.final. The long jump in the decathlon is concluded. Ashdon Eton

:49:38. > :49:56.

:49:56. > :50:06.He was in 7th place in -- Daniel Awde in 19th, he was in 7th after

:50:06. > :50:09.

:50:09. > :50:19.the 100 metres. The into the final heat of it when its 800m. -- the

:50:19. > :50:41.

:50:41. > :50:48.go through. The overall quality in this first round has been average.

:50:48. > :50:54.It certainly has been. We are talking about the men's standard...

:50:54. > :51:03.Look at the back straight, Attar in the green clothing. Way behind the

:51:03. > :51:08.leaders. She is the first athlete to represent Saudi Arabia. There

:51:08. > :51:14.she is, making a move down the back straight. Well behind the others.

:51:14. > :51:19.She is based in San Diego in California. She was allowed to take

:51:19. > :51:26.part in this race when the King said you needed to wear suitable

:51:26. > :51:30.clothing, you could represent Saudi Arabia. She is a long way behind at

:51:30. > :51:35.the moment, but making a bit of history, the first track and field

:51:35. > :51:42.woman from Saudi Arabia. They also had a judo player who took part

:51:42. > :51:52.last Friday. Sarah Attar, I am sure she is very proud to be

:51:52. > :52:04.

:52:04. > :52:11.representing their country. At the wonder why the athletes don't

:52:12. > :52:18.switch off, but it is good running. It is the run-up -- the Russian I

:52:18. > :52:24.am interested in. The youngster from Romania, pushing to get around

:52:24. > :52:30.Garcia. Poistogova is looking comfortable. The top three will

:52:30. > :52:39.have to put their foot down. Garcia stretches. Lavric will try to get

:52:39. > :52:49.in. They will qualify easily because it was a quicker heat. I

:52:49. > :52:50.

:52:50. > :52:53.reckon to, maybe three will go through behind the top three. Sarah

:52:53. > :52:58.Attar from Saudi Arabia, getting a big reception. I think they have

:52:58. > :53:02.been made aware of the situation. An historic moment for Saudi

:53:02. > :53:07.Arabian women. Into the finishing straight. Time is of little

:53:07. > :53:15.consequence. The crowd are responding famously to this effort

:53:15. > :53:22.by Sarah Attar. Really generous response, that's fantastic. That is

:53:23. > :53:31.a step forward for women's athletics. A bit of history being

:53:31. > :53:36.made there. The first Saudi Arabian female athlete on the track. Let's

:53:36. > :53:41.tidy this up. No problems for Busienei, but there was a bit of a

:53:41. > :53:46.sprint at the end. They probably didn't realise they did not need to

:53:46. > :53:49.because of the way the other kids had gone. It was a race for the

:53:49. > :53:55.first three and the fastest qualifiers were going to come from

:53:55. > :54:00.this race anyway. Busienei posted onto the scene in 2007, I think she

:54:00. > :54:04.is as strong as she was then -- burst onto the scene. She was so

:54:04. > :54:11.impressive in 2007, she was beaten in the Olympic Games by her team-

:54:11. > :54:18.mate the following year. Poistogova of Russia in second place. Garcia

:54:18. > :54:22.of Colombia, coming through, running smoothly. Those three,

:54:22. > :54:28.comfortably through to the semi- final. Fairly easy run for all

:54:28. > :54:34.three of them. The next round, we will find out. A draw for the semi-

:54:34. > :54:44.final will pitch some of the good athletes. A fairly sedate opening

:54:44. > :55:15.

:55:15. > :55:20.but we will step up a notch in the made it through to the final. The

:55:20. > :55:26.shop steward, the rest of the pole vaulters' union have got their way

:55:26. > :55:31.with the officials. Steve Lewis and the rest of those guys at 5.50 and

:55:31. > :55:41.5.60, 5.50 at the first attempt, will have qualified for the final,

:55:41. > :56:07.

:56:07. > :56:10.which takes place on Friday. Steve draw, the overall standard is not

:56:10. > :56:20.what it has been before at the Olympic Games, she might have a

:56:20. > :56:23.good chance if she gets a good draw A pretty satisfactory morning,

:56:24. > :56:26.Steve Lewis is through, Lynsey Sharp is through, Mo Farah got

:56:27. > :56:31.through in the 5,000 metres and fingers crossed for Sophie Hitchon

:56:31. > :56:35.in the hammer qualifying. She got a British record and was 5th. We can

:56:35. > :56:39.look forward to this evening's semi-finals and finals, an exciting

:56:39. > :56:46.evening in prospect. Not least because it is the 110 metres

:56:46. > :56:50.hurdles. It is the semi-final and final, two athletes in the semi-

:56:50. > :57:00.finals. Still hope for Great Britain, but they are tough races,

:57:00. > :57:02.

:57:02. > :57:06.no doubt about it. The United States champion is looking so

:57:06. > :57:11.strong and fluent, Aries Merritt. It is those performances which make

:57:11. > :57:15.him out standing. The question over him his will he be able to do it on

:57:15. > :57:19.the biggest stage? He has never won a major championship outdoors

:57:19. > :57:25.before. It will be a tough challenge for him. He will have

:57:25. > :57:28.stiff opposition, but he has got the ability. And it is the Blake

:57:28. > :57:34.and Bolt show in the semi-finals of the 200 metres, they will have to

:57:34. > :57:38.run this time. Yes, I don't think we will see cruising or jogging. It

:57:38. > :57:43.is going to be exciting. We know that Usain Bolt has the potential

:57:43. > :57:49.to take this 200 out, but we don't know about Blake. The run in

:57:49. > :57:55.Brussels, it was incredible. He likes speed endurance, he thinks it

:57:55. > :58:01.is his better event, so let's see. We also have what might be the race

:58:01. > :58:08.of the championship, Alison Phoenix in the 200 metres for women. To me,

:58:08. > :58:14.she is the outstanding female athlete. There were two clear

:58:14. > :58:20.favourite, Rudisha and Alison Phoenix. She is going to win this

:58:20. > :58:25.race by a huge margin. I am looking for her getting close to around

:58:25. > :58:29.21.05, she is in that great a showed. If that wasn't enough,

:58:29. > :58:34.maybe a double in the long jump, Shara Proctor goes in the final. I

:58:34. > :58:40.don't want to jinx aid. It is such a fiercely contest -- contested

:58:40. > :58:45.competition. She will need to get another British record to get the

:58:45. > :58:49.medal, I think. Thank you very much indeed. If you want to continue

:58:49. > :58:55.watching the athletics, it is on the red button. For the moment,

:58:55. > :59:05.back to you, Matt. Thank you very much indeed. The 800

:59:05. > :59:05.

:59:05. > :59:56.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 45 seconds

:59:56. > :00:00.Let's hope that Daniel Awde's leg holds out. We are moving from two

:00:00. > :00:04.legs to four. We have already had two goals and a silver from

:00:04. > :00:14.Greenwich Park, it has been a happy hunting ground for the British team

:00:14. > :00:34.

:00:34. > :00:44.That was a great start. That is Zara Phillips absolutely screaming

:00:44. > :00:56.

:00:56. > :01:06.Over the last! Silver for Great It is going to be a jump-off for

:01:06. > :01:07.

:01:07. > :01:13.the gold. Nick Skelton at his very best! Oh, it is a wait-and-see game

:01:13. > :01:21.now. This could be the first gold for Britain since 1952! And Britain

:01:21. > :01:31.have got gold! Will they be here to see Britain win their first ever

:01:31. > :01:34.

:01:34. > :01:40.dressage medal? This is gold about A medal in every equestrian event

:01:40. > :01:43.so far. Incredible. Before we hand back to Greenwich Park and Clare,

:01:43. > :01:47.who is at -- here is all you need to know about the art of

:01:47. > :01:54.showjumping. Equestrian jumping. The jumping

:01:54. > :02:01.course consists of a mixture of spread obstacles, and straight,

:02:01. > :02:06.vertical obstacles. A water jump may also be included. The jumps are

:02:06. > :02:16.designed so that if the horse hits them, part or all of the fence will

:02:16. > :02:17.

:02:17. > :02:24.fall. Penalties are incurred for mistakes. The horse rider with the

:02:24. > :02:27.fewest wins. Four point and it is are imposed for a first refusal.

:02:27. > :02:33.There is a one point penalty for every four seconds over the

:02:33. > :02:37.allotted time spent on the course. A second refusal or a fall results

:02:37. > :02:42.in disqualification. In the event of a tie, riders will contest a

:02:42. > :02:47.jump-off against the clock. If you would like to get involved in

:02:47. > :02:52.Olympic sports, go to our website for more information.

:02:53. > :02:59.The jumping has already started, so let's cross to Greenwich Park to a

:02:59. > :03:04.very interested spectator. There is Nick Skelton who, at 54, has his

:03:04. > :03:08.first and only Olympic medal. So he is using every moment to prepare

:03:08. > :03:13.for his first round. We can talk to Clare, because we saw a guy there,

:03:13. > :03:18.but nothing was mentioned about the distances between the fences, and

:03:18. > :03:23.that is the crucial thing. It is really advantageous for Nick,

:03:23. > :03:29.because he will go third-last in this field of 37 riders. One pulled

:03:29. > :03:38.out this morning because the horse did not pass the vet inspection.

:03:38. > :03:43.That has let in a competitor from Ireland. The Irishman jumped clear.

:03:43. > :03:53.He won the gold medal in 2004, but had it taken away from him when his

:03:53. > :03:53.

:03:53. > :03:58.horse tested positive for inadequate so -- a banned substance.

:03:58. > :04:01.He is one of only two riders to jump clear, the other being the

:04:01. > :04:05.Olivier Guillon of France. Nick, watching the riders go round this

:04:05. > :04:09.course to see where the problems are being caused, to have a look at

:04:09. > :04:12.what we call related distances, where there are a set number of
