:00:34. > :00:38.Welcome to the penultimate day of action from London 2012. It is the

:00:38. > :00:44.day with more medals up for grabs than any other. And this is where

:00:44. > :00:54.they can be won. We are heading to the Essex countryside as the bikes

:00:54. > :00:55.

:00:55. > :01:01.head for the hills. Annie Last goes for Team GB at 12:30pm.

:01:01. > :01:07.Can Brazil win their first Olympic medal? It is a 3pm kick-off at

:01:07. > :01:14.Wembley as they take on Mexico. You can see that on BBC One.

:01:14. > :01:19.Great Britain's men need to pick themselves up, they are playing for

:01:19. > :01:27.the bronze today. But it will be tough against Australia. That is on

:01:27. > :01:33.BBC Three at 3:30pm. At 7:30pm, Mo Farah will become the

:01:33. > :01:40.first man to try and win the 10,000m and the 5,000-metre there

:01:40. > :01:44.at the same Olympic Games. Ken Usain Bolt make it a triple to

:01:44. > :01:49.make a fitting finale to the athletics competition.

:01:49. > :01:58.Let's get it you up-to-date with what has been going on. A fantastic

:01:58. > :02:03.day 15. The headlines: it all got off to a perfect start for a gold

:02:03. > :02:10.medal for Ed McKeever in the sprint can move. It is now 26 gold medals

:02:10. > :02:14.for Great Britain. It was a bronze for Britain

:02:14. > :02:21.indicate to race, Liam Heath and Jon Schofield finishing third

:02:21. > :02:26.behind an impressive Russian crew. Tom Daley is through to the ten-

:02:26. > :02:32.metre platform diving final after an excellent performance in the

:02:32. > :02:36.aquatic centre. He qualified in fourth place.

:02:36. > :02:43.The men's modern pentathlon is under way, Samuel Weale and Nick

:02:43. > :02:48.Woodbridge are both in 14th place. Next will be the 200m freestyle

:02:48. > :02:52.swim. What a morning, and with a total of

:02:52. > :02:57.11 medals on wheels, Great Britain have had more success than any

:02:57. > :03:04.other nation at these Olympics. After glory on the track and road,

:03:04. > :03:10.will the momentum continue? It is time to go Wrobel crunching.

:03:11. > :03:16.Mountain bike. Mountain biking was developed in California in the

:03:16. > :03:20.1970s and made its Olympic debut in 1996. The Olympic event is a cross-

:03:20. > :03:25.country discipline in which riders won the goes CA's a rough and hilly

:03:25. > :03:30.course with obstacles and technical challenges. Bikes are built for

:03:30. > :03:37.speed, durability and comfort with either full suspension or front

:03:37. > :03:42.suspension. In total, 80 athletes will compete for two gold medals.

:03:42. > :03:48.And there are 50 riders in the men's event and 30 in the women's.

:03:48. > :03:52.Each event begins with a mass start with starting positions been

:03:52. > :03:59.predetermined by world ranking. The first across the line wins the gold

:04:00. > :04:05.medal. Each lap of the course is 4.7 kilometres long, with each race

:04:05. > :04:09.taking a minimum of 90 minutes to complete. During the race, the

:04:09. > :04:19.riders are presented with optional routes. The more direct and

:04:19. > :04:26.dangerous, or the safer but slower the route. In total, riders will

:04:26. > :04:29.climb 1204 metres in the men's race, and 1032 metres in the MEN --

:04:29. > :04:36.women's. If you have liked to get involved

:04:36. > :04:42.in a Olympic sport. Today it is the women's race. There

:04:42. > :04:46.are no heats are semi-finals, it is the first one over the line. 21-

:04:46. > :04:54.year-old Annie Last is the first British woman to qualify for 12

:04:54. > :04:58.years. Let's find out more about her.

:04:58. > :05:04.This is the hardest cycling discipline for me. You have to have

:05:04. > :05:08.the ability to focus for one hour and 45 minutes, beat yourself up

:05:08. > :05:13.for an extended period of time and have the technical skill not to

:05:13. > :05:19.make a mistake. You have to have the physical skill of the track

:05:19. > :05:29.athletes. Then you have to put it all together in the race and cope

:05:29. > :05:30.

:05:30. > :05:39.with the Olympic Games. Is it true you on this bike because of a dare

:05:39. > :05:44.with your brother? Yes. My brother always used to do crossed races. I

:05:44. > :05:50.used to get dragged along to his races, but I liked horse riding. He

:05:50. > :05:56.said to me, if you do a cross race, I will ride a horse. I said, OK

:05:56. > :06:03.then. It was a 10 minute race, then you get a good deed bag, some

:06:03. > :06:13.freebies. I thought, I will do this again. Who are you looking out bar?

:06:13. > :06:15.

:06:15. > :06:20.He will you be thinking you need to beat? You have Catherine Pendle.

:06:20. > :06:27.And the winner of the last World Cup. The she is in her Fortes isn't

:06:27. > :06:34.she? Yes, quite a bit older than me. You are 21, so this is a sport

:06:34. > :06:38.where you can spend years picking up skill and nerve? Especially in

:06:38. > :06:45.the women's field, there are a few older athletes who are exceptional.

:06:45. > :06:52.The last a Olympic champion, Sabine Spitz was 37 when she won in

:06:52. > :06:56.Beijing. You are going in on good form? He has come I will be on the

:06:56. > :07:00.front line. The it is an advantage, but you have to keep up there?

:07:00. > :07:08.has come here get placed according to your world ranking. I and 4th on

:07:08. > :07:15.the grid. But then, you have to look after your position and go

:07:15. > :07:25.around this loop to get onto the single track. It is going to be

:07:25. > :07:28.

:07:28. > :07:32.hard for everyone. Come on, you can do it. I believe in you! It is a

:07:32. > :07:38.massive victory she has made in the Olympics. It is the first British

:07:38. > :07:43.woman to be placed in 12 years. Not only has she qualified, she has

:07:43. > :07:47.worked the hardest I have ever seen in the last 12 months, and she is

:07:47. > :07:51.in a great place. We have come to one of the trickiest parts, the

:07:51. > :07:57.rock garden. It is a key part of the course, it could make or break

:07:57. > :08:04.you raise? It is technical exception and it is moving into a

:08:04. > :08:10.long climb, which is towards the back end of the course as well. If

:08:10. > :08:14.you are behind someone, you might overtake them, so in this narrow

:08:14. > :08:22.section you are in front of them. So to overtake on that, it is

:08:22. > :08:28.tricky? It is. She is a phenomenal athlete, she is on form, she is fit,

:08:28. > :08:33.will she be on the podium? My guess is, she will do the best she can do

:08:33. > :08:40.and get the country behind her. Everybody who has seen on met her,

:08:40. > :08:44.will be rooting for her. From the Olympic Park, we're off to

:08:44. > :08:52.a rare breeds farm, run by the Salvation Army to see how the mind

:08:52. > :08:57.to in biker can cope with the Essex coast. -- mountain biker. Helen

:08:57. > :09:02.Skelton is down with Chris Boardman. Someone else who is handy on a bike.

:09:02. > :09:08.I am concerned about the offshore wind, you can see how close it is

:09:08. > :09:13.to the course. We heard the canoeists talking about the extra

:09:13. > :09:17.challenge of the head wind. Will this be an issue? It shouldn't be,

:09:17. > :09:23.because it is different. The canoeists are going in one

:09:23. > :09:28.direction. On this course, riders are constantly changing position,

:09:28. > :09:32.on they Chris? It is unusual, but because it is a natural

:09:32. > :09:37.amphitheatre, and they are constantly changing direction, it

:09:37. > :09:42.shouldn't have a bearing on the race. Essex is not known for its

:09:42. > :09:48.gradients, but this course does take all the boxes... The guys have

:09:49. > :09:53.done a fantastic job. It is an interesting course, it is a new

:09:53. > :09:58.style and made it much smaller. Five kilometres in length so the

:09:58. > :10:02.spectators get to see more. Because it is open, it is great for the

:10:02. > :10:07.spectators because you can see right across the course. Annie Last,

:10:07. > :10:11.it is not unrealistic to say she might be on the podium is it?

:10:12. > :10:19.just a couple of weeks ago she was third in the World Cup and that is

:10:19. > :10:24.her best result. She was only just behind the French goal, but it is

:10:24. > :10:30.will be about the start, she needs to get off quick. She needs to

:10:30. > :10:35.master the technical bits. The only way I can compare it is it is like

:10:35. > :10:45.a staircase made of rocks. That is my mitigation and bear to mind as I

:10:45. > :10:52.

:10:52. > :11:02.try to prove to you how tricky it That is its, pedal, pedal, pedal.

:11:02. > :11:12.Just go over there, and stop. It is quite a drop. It is unbelievable.

:11:12. > :11:13.

:11:13. > :11:21.You have a bit of a jump up on your left. It is horrendous. I dine out

:11:21. > :11:27.on the fact I am hard. It is a fear factor. You start to shake a little

:11:27. > :11:34.bit. They are scary obstacles, it is a tough sport. A imagine that is

:11:34. > :11:39.why it is addictive, because of the agenda run? You do get a kick.

:11:39. > :11:49.adrenalin. Come and aim towards the outside of this. Are you

:11:49. > :11:54.comfortable? I am going off this bit, this sharp rock. The feeling

:11:54. > :11:59.you have got now is nothing towards what the athletes are feeling. You

:11:59. > :12:07.need to let that the bike ride. Imagine a roller-coaster, it never

:12:07. > :12:17.quite stops, it is always flowing. Oh OK, let's do this. Poor your

:12:17. > :12:22.

:12:22. > :12:28.brakes a bit. -- Paul your brakes. Let it roll in. I you're OK? Yes.

:12:28. > :12:34.Are you sure? Yes, we got over it. I want to do it again because I

:12:34. > :12:44.want to get it right. I am my own worst enemy. Get your sleeves down,

:12:44. > :12:46.

:12:46. > :12:56.to protect your arms. Are you all right? I am, yes. What am I doing?!

:12:56. > :12:56.

:12:56. > :13:02.Relax. Does that count as a success? A counts as finished.

:13:02. > :13:11.you just saying that to stop me? it counts. You have done well, it

:13:11. > :13:17.really well. I have been in the velodrome, I have ridden a road

:13:17. > :13:27.bike plenty of times, and I have done things similar to that. I say

:13:27. > :13:32.similar, never as intimidating as that. Prospector! Well done. --

:13:32. > :13:37.respect. I wanted to carry on but Phil was on the verge of a heart

:13:37. > :13:42.attack. He said, you have done your best. Hopefully we won't see any

:13:42. > :13:46.accidents, there are plenty of medics around the course. It is

:13:46. > :13:53.almost time for Annie Last to go for the gold medal. The first woman

:13:53. > :14:03.to qualify for this mountain bike events the 12 years. It is time to

:14:03. > :14:16.

:14:16. > :14:21.just seen the reigning Olympic champion. Julia press-out, who is

:14:21. > :14:27.tipped to do well. Annie Last of Great Britain. How do you rate her

:14:27. > :14:32.chances, Chris? She has a great chance, she was third in the World

:14:32. > :14:38.Cup. She is looking to improve. She has ridden this course more than

:14:38. > :14:43.any other rider, she has done more than 100 laps in training. We are

:14:43. > :14:49.expecting good things. If it is a very close field here at Hadleigh

:14:49. > :14:54.Farm. The start will be important. Technically Annie Last is great,

:14:54. > :15:00.but she needs to get literally into the first corner first. If she can

:15:00. > :15:10.do that she will have a great shot up at getting a medal. Three rows

:15:10. > :15:25.

:15:25. > :15:31.watch? She managed to get into the first corner, they will do this

:15:31. > :15:36.start a look before they go ensued the technical sections. Her coach,

:15:36. > :15:46.Phil Dixon said he is expecting some crashes on the first technical

:15:46. > :15:55.

:15:55. > :16:04.unforgiving. Most of them are using carbon fibre, which is the super-

:16:04. > :16:14.strong, but if it falls sideways on to prop, it will crack. Annie, just

:16:14. > :16:20.

:16:20. > :16:25.as they hit the first climb. Annie Last will be happy, this is exactly

:16:25. > :16:33.the start she wanted, to get into this technical section, probably

:16:33. > :16:43.the best technical Rivett in this field. Not physically the best. She

:16:43. > :16:45.

:16:45. > :16:49.will expect to get caught back on the climb. The first crash there in

:16:49. > :16:59.the middle section. She has survived getting hit by anybody

:16:59. > :17:01.

:17:01. > :17:07.else. You can see how nasty it is. The field is spaced out so nicely.

:17:07. > :17:15.You can see how they control does crashers, pushing the weight on to

:17:15. > :17:25.the back wheel, trying to control it. Annie Last in front, looking

:17:25. > :17:36.

:17:36. > :17:45.comfortable. The more technical, went down. There are several routes,

:17:45. > :17:55.and easier route which is harder -- longer. The harder it is not for

:17:55. > :18:01.

:18:01. > :18:11.the paint -- the paint heart it. That was the Polish Rider.

:18:11. > :18:13.

:18:13. > :18:17.Dawidowicz. Straight back up. of different choices. You have to

:18:18. > :18:21.hit that with speed, if you do not commit, it will be messy. All of

:18:21. > :18:31.these riders will have trained harder on this course, it is so

:18:31. > :18:41.quick and fast, these technical, hard sections, then a hard climb.

:18:41. > :18:48.Just over one minute and 15, that will be the toughest part. They

:18:48. > :18:53.will do almost one chronometer. It should be about one hour and 45

:18:53. > :18:58.minutes. Some of the hardest raising you'll see in the mountain

:18:58. > :19:03.bike. Some of the heart rate profiles go up to the threshold and

:19:04. > :19:10.it stays there. It is not like a road race where you rest in the

:19:10. > :19:17.slipstream. All the resistance from a mountain bike race is from the

:19:17. > :19:27.ground. We have perfect weather, looking out over the Thames estuary.

:19:27. > :19:28.

:19:28. > :19:33.But we have quite a lot of wind, 6.1 metres per second. It is easily

:19:33. > :19:40.18 miles an hour, will that make a lot of difference? The nice thing

:19:40. > :19:47.about this course, it is exposed, because it is set in this

:19:47. > :19:51.amphitheatre, you thought the winds might allow a bit of a slipstream.

:19:51. > :19:57.They are constantly changing direction. I don't they it will

:19:57. > :20:07.have as much an effect as in a time trial or road race. Let us run

:20:07. > :20:13.through the format. They have the six laps. One technical section.

:20:13. > :20:18.One feed station. If they get a puncture, even 20 metres past the

:20:18. > :20:22.technical section, they cannot turn round and go back. They have to do

:20:22. > :20:28.another half a lap to get back there. Whether they run their bike

:20:28. > :20:35.or ride it with a flat tyre, that is the rule. That is the only place

:20:35. > :20:42.you can get technical help. They carry with them a small canister to

:20:42. > :20:47.inflate tyres if they had a puncture, that will get them to the

:20:47. > :20:54.finish area. Fundamentally, they have to sort it out themselves.

:20:54. > :21:03.They are running the suspension four very hard today because of the

:21:03. > :21:07.very rocky nature of this course. Such hard impact. You can be thrown

:21:07. > :21:15.overt the top so they are running them harder than normally. They

:21:15. > :21:20.Arif few people are running for suspension bikes.

:21:20. > :21:28.It is a hard, compact race with obstacles. Despite those nasty

:21:29. > :21:38.technical sections, it will be fast. A little bit of they pile up on one

:21:39. > :21:46.

:21:46. > :21:51.of the switchbacks. A decent amount paper, is Catharine Pendrel. She is

:21:51. > :21:56.having a good race at the moment. World champion and World Cup

:21:56. > :22:03.champion, forced back in Beijing. She was bitterly disappointed,

:22:03. > :22:11.desperately wants to win today. So, I think we will be watching her in

:22:11. > :22:16.the mix. Annie still holding on to that lead at the moment. We can

:22:16. > :22:26.expect them to take a little under 20 minutes for these lapse. The

:22:26. > :22:28.

:22:28. > :22:33.first lap a bit longer because of this stopped loop. -- start loop.

:22:33. > :22:43.Going through the feed sown. Starting to stretch out a lot.

:22:43. > :22:44.

:22:44. > :22:54.Annie. Just behind Julie Bresset who leads. A group of six forming,

:22:54. > :22:55.

:22:55. > :23:02.it was predicted it would quickly break. There is a little bit of

:23:02. > :23:10.shelter. We just saw Catharine Pendrel down in about 10th position

:23:10. > :23:15.coming through the first half lap split. Catharine Pendrel, right

:23:15. > :23:20.down intend position at the moment. She has got herself caught up.

:23:20. > :23:28.think she is getting back in touch with this group. The problem is in

:23:28. > :23:33.passing. There are sections of this course which are narrow. Passing on

:23:33. > :23:41.a climb, as we can see, it is energy expensive. Once you lose

:23:41. > :23:49.your place, or make a mistake, it can be extremely costly. Beautiful

:23:49. > :23:59.shops from out aerial camera. bunching up a little bit. --

:23:59. > :24:04.beautiful shots. Julie Bresset was one of the favourites. Having a

:24:04. > :24:10.chat with the British coach to see who is on form. She was second at

:24:10. > :24:20.the recent World Cup, just in front of Annie Last. It is interesting to

:24:20. > :24:26.see the age come down. Both very young. Put that in comparison with

:24:26. > :24:34.Sabine Spitz who is 40 years old. This is the leap of faith they're

:24:34. > :24:39.coming down here. That is a nasty section, you cannot believe

:24:39. > :24:47.somebody will write down it. If you think the rocks don't look native

:24:47. > :24:53.to Essex, they have imported 500 tons of Derbyshire of grit stone

:24:53. > :24:59.and 3,000 tonnes of crushed rock to build this course. There are no

:24:59. > :25:05.boggy sections, it is a hard and quick draining course. It is mostly

:25:05. > :25:10.gravel and rock. This is not what Annie Last was expecting, she is

:25:10. > :25:15.stretching them out on the physical section. That is a real surprise.

:25:15. > :25:25.She was expected to excel in the technical section and be overhauled

:25:25. > :25:26.

:25:26. > :25:33.on the climb. You can see here, we have a problem. Julie Bresset, she

:25:33. > :25:39.just swerved over. Julie Bresset has got back on her bike. She knew

:25:39. > :25:46.that Annie Last had a chance to get away. You can see what it costs on

:25:46. > :25:50.that Klein, physically very demanding. This need is paying off.

:25:50. > :25:55.She is staying clear of the traffic. Not getting caught up with any of

:25:55. > :26:00.the other riders. Her technical ability is well suited to Racal's

:26:00. > :26:05.matches, she has ridden well over 100 laps of this circuit in

:26:05. > :26:13.training, in all weathers. She knows this course better than the

:26:13. > :26:20.back of her hand and it is paying off. It is only early days. Annie

:26:20. > :26:29.Last will be happy with this start. An hour and a half of racing is

:26:30. > :26:38.long. Julie Bresset getting caught on a fence and cutting everyone off

:26:38. > :26:44.by -- there. They had a test event here last

:26:44. > :26:50.year and a lot of the riders asked for the course to be widened.

:26:50. > :26:54.they did change the course and made it wider in sections. They also

:26:54. > :27:04.gave more options on the technical section because everyone was

:27:04. > :27:04.

:27:04. > :27:14.following the same line. These two are clear. There are some trials

:27:14. > :27:16.

:27:16. > :27:26.bikes tracking them up hill. child's bike with the green

:27:26. > :27:35.

:27:35. > :27:41.indicates how many laps far left. - the trials bike.

:27:41. > :27:49.You can see the experience of those three. Nobody ready to push on,

:27:49. > :27:52.working hard up this climb, happy to hold position. Nobody will go

:27:52. > :27:59.around this course faster than Annie Last, she has already created

:27:59. > :28:08.a gap. That is her strategy, forced the others to catch up. There isn't

:28:08. > :28:15.really any slipstream. They have to concentrate so hard. Lose rock,

:28:15. > :28:18.gravel, in the turns. The body is constantly taking a pummelling.

:28:18. > :28:24.They are basing their muscles against the vibration all of the

:28:25. > :28:31.time. They are so demanding. You can see it in the pulse rate. It

:28:31. > :28:35.stays high it all of the way. You can see now the latter riders

:28:35. > :28:42.struggling through those technical sections. This field is really

:28:42. > :28:47.stretching out now. Well into their first lap as they go through the

:28:47. > :28:51.technical zone for the second time. They will start to take bottles on

:28:51. > :28:58.the next lap rather than carried it because weight is so important in

:28:58. > :29:02.mountain-biking. Their air resistance is such a small part but

:29:02. > :29:09.wait is critical. They will do anything including not putting

:29:09. > :29:15.paint on the frame, to save weight. How much weight would you really

:29:15. > :29:24.save without paint? It is about 60 grams. It depends on your colour

:29:24. > :29:31.scheme, but Red Ed is heavier! Coming up, this is the final major

:29:31. > :29:41.climb. Quite a short one, but it is a very steep descent which will

:29:41. > :29:42.

:29:42. > :29:51.carry them round in to a very tight chicane littered with rocks.

:29:52. > :29:57.usually goes according to the gridding. It becomes very clear who

:29:57. > :30:02.is on top. Reflective of who is on form at the moment. Catharine

:30:02. > :30:08.Pendrel just coming through. Annie Last has led. Apart from the end of

:30:08. > :30:13.the start, where Julie Bresset came back on. That is a reasonable

:30:13. > :30:18.margin. Catharine Pendrel, maybe 100 metres, she can close this gap,

:30:18. > :30:23.the Canadian, desperately wants a result here. But how many times can

:30:23. > :30:33.she keep closing the gap? Annie Last is not as physically capable

:30:33. > :30:38.

:30:38. > :30:45.as the Canadian, but technically these gaps, physically? Sprinting

:30:45. > :30:54.into that it will kill her, she needs to develop a rhythm. It means

:30:55. > :31:02.they are not fully recovered at all when they climb. Coming through...

:31:02. > :31:12.Starting the second lap, Julie Bresset Ertel in front. Catherine

:31:12. > :31:14.

:31:14. > :31:19.Pendrel, and Sabine Spitz. Very little, separating the top five.

:31:19. > :31:26.Sabine Spitz is the defending Olympic champion. She knows how to

:31:26. > :31:31.deal with those pressures. It is a select group forming. There are

:31:31. > :31:36.some others trying to get on terms. Unless they can get in front, which

:31:36. > :31:44.I don't think is possible, eventually they will peel away from

:31:44. > :31:54.the front group. It will swell on to this part of the course, about

:31:54. > :31:54.

:31:54. > :31:59.10 riders keeping in touch. Annie Last taking matter very nicely.

:31:59. > :32:05.was a fast first lap as well, considering they have the start

:32:05. > :32:10.loop in there. They will and force the 80% rules. They don't want back

:32:10. > :32:16.markers interfering with the race. After the first lap, they time it.

:32:16. > :32:21.If anybody gets 80% behind, they will take them out as they come

:32:21. > :32:29.through the finish area. If it takes 10 minutes to do a lap, as

:32:29. > :32:39.soon as they are doing... Eight minutes back, they are out. I am

:32:39. > :32:40.

:32:40. > :32:44.good at mathematics. Not really, I am glad you chose 10 minutes. They

:32:44. > :32:52.know how important positioning is so they go into the red in the

:32:52. > :32:58.first lap to get themselves in the right place on the course. You can

:32:58. > :33:08.see the arms working down. So technical. The riders can get up on

:33:08. > :33:14.the rocks if they want to a round the corner. It is Julie Bresset

:33:14. > :33:19.still leading. In second we have Catherine Pendrel and Annie Last is

:33:19. > :33:26.in third. Sabine Spitz, reigning a lot -- Olympic champion, opting to

:33:26. > :33:31.go round the outside of the tree rather than the jump. The cameraman

:33:31. > :33:39.could not decide which way to go. They are coming thick and fast

:33:39. > :33:45.either side of him. This is a great course. What I like about it, and

:33:45. > :33:49.risky sections of the course will reward with speed. If you are

:33:50. > :33:55.prepared to take the jump over the rocks, it is faster than going

:33:55. > :34:01.round the outside of the hill. risk, reward ratio, there is a

:34:01. > :34:08.couple of options on every technical section. The higher skill

:34:08. > :34:18.factor, the riskiest way is the shortest. Some of the big news at

:34:18. > :34:23.the moment is one of the favourites, 39-year-old Norwegian, Dahle is in

:34:23. > :34:29.20th place. She could have moved up a little bit, but that is the kind

:34:29. > :34:35.of deficit you cannot get back against talent like this. It is so

:34:35. > :34:41.costly to have to get back. There is no let up. Those graphics are

:34:41. > :34:47.wrong, and the last is back out in front. Followed by Julie Bresset.

:34:47. > :34:55.Catherine Pendrel just behind. Sabine Spitz coming into the frame.

:34:55. > :35:02.Most of the favourites are where we expected them to beat. Katerina

:35:02. > :35:09.Nash is giving a great ride. But they are closing up. A lot of

:35:09. > :35:13.people had speculated it would form into tight groups early on. They

:35:13. > :35:19.are basically stretching out and then coming back, stretching out

:35:19. > :35:26.and coming back. But it is the same names. We are having to use the

:35:26. > :35:30.same sections the from group are using to break a -- take a breather.

:35:30. > :35:35.Then they get the next hard section they are out of breath. It will

:35:35. > :35:42.catch up with you. You'll probably get away with it once or twice.

:35:42. > :35:49.That is probably about 10 seconds now. Just coming to the bottom of

:35:49. > :35:54.snake Hill. An evil little section of the course. Lots of switchbacks.

:35:54. > :36:01.The rock across the course, forcing the riders to concentrate and think

:36:01. > :36:07.about it were they are breaking. One set of rocks at just ice sex at

:36:07. > :36:11.the middle of the course, so you have to go five-a-side of it. It

:36:11. > :36:16.was one of the things they added, a couple of good over taking

:36:16. > :36:26.positions. What a shot that is as they go up this long as climb on

:36:26. > :36:28.

:36:28. > :36:34.the course. Just over a minute long. These four are stretching away.

:36:34. > :36:39.Riders could physically bridge back up, then lose it again on the

:36:39. > :36:45.descent. I think we are seeing the four riders who will be fighting it

:36:45. > :36:50.out. You will be certain are one of them has gone off too hard and well

:36:50. > :36:57.paid the price. Heat will be a factor today as well. The winds

:36:57. > :37:03.keeping the temperature down slightly. 21 degrees already.

:37:03. > :37:10.Another piece of information on the British rider, Annie Last. They

:37:10. > :37:14.have just been in the Alps and have been doing a lot of downhill

:37:14. > :37:23.training on a mountain bike with no rear suspension, to put the body

:37:23. > :37:28.through its paces the the kind of battering they get off these rocks.

:37:28. > :37:34.It may pay dividends later. There is a lot of pressure on these

:37:34. > :37:39.riders. In this group, they cannot afford to make a mistake. The

:37:39. > :37:43.smallest mistake will cost them so dearly if they dropped back. They

:37:43. > :37:50.are all together at the front, the ones we expected, Annie Last is

:37:50. > :37:56.still in touch. Catherine Pendrel is where she needs to be. They

:37:56. > :38:01.won't be making a break, they will be happy to stay in this group. You

:38:01. > :38:06.saw them take a bottle through the technical zone. They will take

:38:06. > :38:10.maybe half a bottle. Because they go through it so frequently, they

:38:10. > :38:15.will keep it on the bike and then drink it over the top of the small

:38:15. > :38:21.climb. They will constantly take on bottles so they are not carrying

:38:21. > :38:25.the weight of the water with them. We have a little game of mountain

:38:25. > :38:31.bike musical chairs. Another group of three have just pulled

:38:31. > :38:36.themselves up. One person makes a mistake and you can see the damage

:38:36. > :38:41.will stop suddenly losing 30 metres. The second group of three riders

:38:41. > :38:51.decided to sprint up and almost piled into the back of the leading

:38:51. > :38:56.group. And what happens at the back, they will catch up, but we did see

:38:56. > :39:00.before when Julie Bresset tried to pass. It is too narrow. They will

:39:00. > :39:06.be happy to stay on the wheel. And they are not technically as good,

:39:06. > :39:11.and they will lose the distance. Eventually they would just fall a

:39:11. > :39:18.way. Every time a very hard training when they do those sprints.

:39:18. > :39:24.They get you out of your comfort zone. That looks like Julie Bresset

:39:24. > :39:30.Air France pushing. She was the favourite of the British coach when

:39:30. > :39:40.I was talking to him yesterday. He said she is the one pushing at the

:39:40. > :39:44.

:39:44. > :39:54.moment. It look slight Sabine Spitz, Catherine Pendrel and then followed

:39:54. > :39:55.

:39:55. > :40:03.very closely by Katerina Nash and then the Russians. Rather than any

:40:03. > :40:10.long, driving climbs they are very short climbs. It keeps their heart

:40:10. > :40:16.rate absolutely Max out for the duration. Julie Bresset out in

:40:16. > :40:22.front. Sabine Spitz is there. Be looks like Catherine Pendrel going

:40:23. > :40:29.round the outside. She wants her taste of the lead. The Russian is

:40:29. > :40:37.getting back on terms as well, she is a former bronze-medallist. Also

:40:37. > :40:44.flag as an outsider. Paying a price for the very hard opening lap. But

:40:44. > :40:50.she is still in touch. Sabine Spitz has taken the lead. And the last is

:40:50. > :40:55.in 4th. They come down this a very, deceptively fast section 4 how

:40:55. > :41:02.rough it is. You cannot afford to make a single mistake on surfaces

:41:02. > :41:09.like this. So impressive. Sabine Spitz are opting to go round the

:41:09. > :41:14.outside of the Little Rock Garden. Would you say, climbing is not

:41:14. > :41:23.Annie Last's strong point? I was out on the bike with her this year,

:41:23. > :41:28.and it was bad for my ego. Technically, she made me cry! She

:41:28. > :41:34.is phenomenal. Technically she is good, there are stronger riders on

:41:34. > :41:39.the climbs and it will be one skill verses another. Sabine Spitz wants

:41:39. > :41:44.to thin this out as quickly as possible. She was looking for the

:41:44. > :41:50.easiest sections through the rocks. A couple of times we saw Julie

:41:50. > :41:55.Bresset on her tail while Sabine Spitz was looking around the side.

:41:55. > :42:01.That is the choice you make. The technical sections are harder on

:42:01. > :42:07.the body. You can see the tyre pressure being used. Catherine

:42:07. > :42:13.Pendrel has opted for a softer pressure. It is slightly smoother

:42:13. > :42:20.over the rocks. They cannot have them too soft or they can suffer an

:42:20. > :42:28.impact punctured. What pressure, in range? Probably around five bar

:42:28. > :42:32.maximum here, but more likely 3.5. It is a tubular tyres so there is

:42:32. > :42:39.no in the Tube, it is encased in a circular section and they are glued

:42:39. > :42:47.on to the rim. It gives you a faster ride. It is a very good view

:42:47. > :42:54.of how soft it is. Annie Last is in 4th position, just in touch. She is

:42:54. > :42:58.about to come into one of the sections that plays to her stance.

:42:58. > :43:06.Catherine Pendrel and Sabine Spitz the leading down this section.

:43:07. > :43:16.There is no let up at all. technical section again for the

:43:16. > :43:21.second time on this lap. Then they have won, short, steep climb after

:43:21. > :43:27.this and then they will come through for their second lap. Very,

:43:27. > :43:36.very interesting race so far. will also see a difference in their

:43:36. > :43:42.bikes. Some of them are using 29 inch wheels and the standard is 26.

:43:42. > :43:49.The larger wheels roll faster and smooth out a lot of bumps, but

:43:49. > :43:55.there is a higher rate penalty. They also added a rotational rates,

:43:55. > :44:01.which is a disadvantage. So the bigger wheel does not get caught in

:44:01. > :44:06.the small gaps? Riders can roll over the top of them. Does it

:44:06. > :44:15.change manoeuvrability? It slows the handlebars down, I have been

:44:15. > :44:25.out on both types. For you and I, 29 Inch would smooth it out. It

:44:25. > :44:28.

:44:28. > :44:35.depends on your size as well. Also they have very small head tubes and

:44:35. > :44:40.sloping down stems that to get over the fact the wheels are so big.

:44:40. > :44:50.that to do with your riding position? Yes, they are still

:44:50. > :44:58.

:44:58. > :45:04.deciding at the moment. Julie Bresset has signed a two year

:45:04. > :45:11.contract with an elite sporting programme. France only give 10 of

:45:11. > :45:17.those out a year. Under 23 champion last year. She is one of the

:45:17. > :45:23.youngest. She is pulling away. Julie best setter with almost 30

:45:23. > :45:33.metres gap, back down to Catherine Pendrel. Sabine Spitz is right on

:45:33. > :45:41.

:45:41. > :45:47.through that section. She did what she needed to do, on that opening

:45:47. > :45:52.lap. Perhaps paying a price that as everyone settles into their place.

:45:53. > :45:59.The American, Georgia Gould, making a play here. I think she may have

:45:59. > :46:09.come up, past Annie. Julie Bresset comes through first. Sabine Spitz

:46:09. > :46:12.

:46:12. > :46:22.in the second,... She has really come through. Annie Last his 5th. -

:46:22. > :46:23.

:46:23. > :46:30.- is fifth. A definite group of six which has broken out. Apart from

:46:30. > :46:36.Dahle Flesjaa, all of the favourites are there. Everybody

:46:36. > :46:40.taking a drink as they come through. You feel you need to keep the

:46:40. > :46:47.pressure on but if you neglect taking a drink, you'll pay a

:46:47. > :46:54.serious price later on. The slower speed is they don't get the cooling

:46:54. > :47:04.effect of a road race. Russell temperature is so high in this race.

:47:04. > :47:12.-- muscle temperature. She needs to take a breather. She

:47:12. > :47:22.had a great start. Punchy slightly above her weight on the climb. --

:47:22. > :47:29.

:47:29. > :47:37.Annie Last, straight down the middle. Kalentieva doing the same.

:47:37. > :47:46.It is a lot easier following. But if the rider in front has a problem,

:47:46. > :47:52.there is no way to stop. Georgia Gould, taking Catharine Pendrel.

:47:52. > :47:58.Julie Bresset, in control. Sabine Spitz going with her. She has

:47:58. > :48:08.certainly stretch the lead in those technical sections. Georgia Gould,

:48:08. > :48:21.

:48:21. > :48:28.back in 5th. Julie Bresset is the key very comfortable in front.

:48:28. > :48:32.is a very open course, unusual for him mountain-bike course. For the

:48:32. > :48:40.spectators and out aerial cameras, it is making a difference. We can

:48:40. > :48:48.follow all of the action in this race. A fantastic design. The site

:48:48. > :48:55.is 122 years old. First bought by William Booth, the founder of the

:48:55. > :49:00.Salvation Army, he turned 900 acres into his vision, helping unemployed

:49:00. > :49:04.and marginalised people, getting back into the work force. It still

:49:04. > :49:10.trains to hundred people a week out here. A beautiful piece of

:49:10. > :49:20.countryside, been put to good use. I understand this will be open to

:49:20. > :49:22.

:49:22. > :49:29.the public after the Olympics. idea is to add an awful lot more of

:49:29. > :49:39.bike trails. It will be something to ride on the mountain bike

:49:39. > :49:40.

:49:40. > :49:45.Olympic course. A definite bunching again of the top four. Julie

:49:45. > :49:50.Bresset. Sabine Spitz. Georgia Gould has had a fantastic charge

:49:50. > :49:57.from the end of the second lapse macro, now pushing hard. Catharine

:49:57. > :50:05.Pendrel pushing hard. Annie Last has dropped back to sit position.

:50:05. > :50:10.We have seen this group changing positions. In the next 10 minutes,

:50:10. > :50:16.we will see the group which will contest the medals. Not necessarily

:50:16. > :50:23.the ones who have been strong so far, it is about pacing your effort.

:50:23. > :50:28.Sabine Spitz. She looks like she is in a good position. You can see it

:50:28. > :50:33.in the body language, who is working harder. Who is waiting.

:50:33. > :50:38.Sabine Spitz is not leading the race but she is constantly in touch.

:50:38. > :50:45.She seems to have a little bit left in reserve. Julie Bresset will know

:50:45. > :50:53.that. She looks good, the French rider. Riding with a lot of

:50:53. > :50:58.experience for someone of such a young age. It comes with confidence.

:50:58. > :51:04.With such a consistent season under your belt, she knows on paper she

:51:04. > :51:10.has this in about, if she can write to her strengths. Sabine Spitz is

:51:10. > :51:16.in her 4th Olympics. Georgia Gould has done a good job, benefiting

:51:16. > :51:22.from being careful at the start, not going with that early charge

:51:22. > :51:28.led by Annie Last. Riding her own race. She has bought herself up. It

:51:28. > :51:35.is like a time trial, you are constantly on the limit. If you

:51:35. > :51:40.overcook it, there is no way to recover. If you did go up harder on

:51:40. > :51:47.the first lap, it will take a long time to recover the effort made.

:51:47. > :51:52.Those six are pulling away. Two groups of three. Georgia Gould was

:51:52. > :51:59.8th in Beijing, a little bit of the Olympic experience. Basic Olympic

:51:59. > :52:09.disappointment goes a long way, a good motivator. Stretching out.

:52:09. > :52:15.

:52:15. > :52:20.Julie Bresset of France seems to be Quebec this year. She got a third

:52:20. > :52:28.place, just after that. She certainly has form, not the same we

:52:28. > :52:38.have seen from Julie Bresset. She is looking comfortable. A long way

:52:38. > :52:43.to go at the moment. The Julie Bresset, from France. I had a nasty

:52:43. > :52:46.crash in the Tour de France. have seen physically mountain

:52:46. > :52:54.bikers crossing over to road racing, it isn't something that will become

:52:55. > :53:01.more prevalent? They tend to be very goodbye handlers when they

:53:01. > :53:08.come across to the road. They often use it as a way of getting physical

:53:08. > :53:14.conditioning, without actually doing the damage. Stretching out

:53:14. > :53:23.now. Annie Last of Great Britain was leading for all of the first

:53:23. > :53:33.lap, now 40 seconds in arrears. A good shot of Julie Bresset. On

:53:33. > :53:40.

:53:40. > :53:47.Annie Last is sitting in 6th, at the end of that top group. Suddenly,

:53:47. > :53:54.it's not just Sabine Spitz put in the pressure on Julie Bresset. More

:53:54. > :53:58.pressure from Georgia Gould behind her. There bunching up on the climb,

:53:58. > :54:06.Julie Bresset staying in charge in the technical section. Just to go

:54:06. > :54:14.back, she is the dark horse, she hasn't been put dissipating in a

:54:15. > :54:21.lot of the World Cups. Form is there. Starting to see those first

:54:21. > :54:29.three stretch out. As we look at the aerial view. A good 10 seconds

:54:29. > :54:39.to the next three. Still plenty of racing to go. Probably about 45

:54:39. > :54:42.

:54:42. > :54:52.the right lines, it is different about race pace. You can train and

:54:52. > :54:53.

:54:53. > :55:02.Chen but, when racing, it is not always the same. You can see them

:55:02. > :55:08.slide the rear wheel, to line it up. To use the groove that is

:55:08. > :55:13.developing on the course. Using the bombs to slow down and control

:55:13. > :55:17.their descent. Very difficult for their road rider to come across to

:55:17. > :55:22.mountain-biking. If you slide on a road bike it normally means it is

:55:22. > :55:30.over. Here, it is a matter of course, for the wheels to be

:55:30. > :55:39.constantly moving on the descent. Grinding their way. Another of

:55:39. > :55:45.these punishing a sense -- ascents. Julie Bresset, reluctant to let

:55:45. > :55:53.anyone else take the lead. Interestingly, these are very

:55:53. > :55:57.slight riders because the power to rate is -- weight, is critical. But

:55:57. > :56:07.they are on a par with track sprinters who are about power. They

:56:07. > :56:10.

:56:10. > :56:20.don't have the sprint -- sustainability. Some of these girls

:56:20. > :56:22.

:56:22. > :56:28.are 5 ft 3, 46: -- 46 kgs. They have to mix so many abilities. The

:56:28. > :56:36.technical aspect of a motocross rider. Super efficient. The front

:56:36. > :56:44.of a climber to get themselves over these climbs. It is like coming out

:56:44. > :56:54.of the blocks as a 100-metre runner. An incredible mix of abilities.

:56:54. > :56:56.

:56:56. > :57:00.Some beautiful slow-motion showing how hard these bikes are working.

:57:00. > :57:10.full suspension but would give them a lot more control, but it soaks up

:57:10. > :57:16.

:57:16. > :57:26.looking very smooth, and still very comfortable, she is not puffing at

:57:26. > :57:26.

:57:27. > :57:35.all. Sabine Spitz is on Hotel, that group of three you can see -- on

:57:35. > :57:39.her tail. Annie Last is back up into 4th place. She drove back

:57:39. > :57:43.first lap so she didn't get caught in the traffic. She said she wanted

:57:43. > :57:49.to be into the first bend, technically superb, leading the

:57:49. > :57:55.field. She paid the price. She has had the confidence to back off and

:57:55. > :58:03.let herself get back on terms. Now, starting to ride effectively a time

:58:03. > :58:07.trial, moving back towards this front group. That is great, some

:58:07. > :58:11.experienced choices. She will make it up on the technical sections.

:58:11. > :58:18.She is on the back foot now, rather than resting on the flatter

:58:18. > :58:28.sections, she will have to keep the pressure on, to close that gap.

:58:28. > :58:48.

:58:48. > :58:55.Just coming round into the incredible pace. She has eased off

:58:56. > :59:00.slightly, settling into the middle of the race. That puts them on the

:59:00. > :59:04.front foot, if anyone is coming back, they have to drive hard,

:59:04. > :59:14.whereas they have had a rest. It will be difficult for anybody, even

:59:14. > :59:18.if they can make contact with these three. Julie Bresset keeps

:59:18. > :59:22.producing daylight all the time, not technically a good climber.

:59:22. > :59:28.Keeping a self in control. The others are using their slightly

:59:28. > :59:33.superior physical ability to close gaps rather than make gaps. This

:59:33. > :59:42.last vicious little climb before they drop down into the finish

:59:42. > :59:47.arena. A short steep climb, then dropping off the back, on to the

:59:47. > :59:53.rocks. Then, a little climb. And back through the finish. Julie

:59:53. > :00:00.Bresset is making more of a gap now, pushing on again. She has sensed a

:00:00. > :00:06.bit of daylight. They have a 20 one-second gap between the chasing

:00:06. > :00:15.group, stretching it out. Georgia Gould is having a great ride.

:00:15. > :00:25.timed that perfectly. Not one of the favourites here. But she has

:00:25. > :00:41.

:00:41. > :00:45.ridden a very canny race. Not going Sabine Spitz closing it down. If

:00:45. > :00:50.they get to the next technical section she might be able to

:00:50. > :00:57.stretch that out a bit. She isn't puffing that much, she looks so

:00:58. > :01:05.comfortable at the moment. Five or six seconds, we will get a clear

:01:05. > :01:15.look enough. There is proper daylight. Julie Bresset, 45.46 is

:01:15. > :01:27.

:01:27. > :01:37.her time. Then Sabine Spitz. Georgia Gould, the American. A big

:01:37. > :01:48.

:01:48. > :01:57.gap going to Irina Kalentieva. An average of 30 miles an hour.

:01:57. > :02:05.wall of attrition is taking its toll. We are an a hard way. -- war

:02:05. > :02:10.of attrition. If Julie Bresset can hold this pace, it will be a very

:02:10. > :02:20.fast time. It is a brutal first half of the race for stomp we can

:02:20. > :02:23.

:02:23. > :02:33.expect them to back off slightly. Their bodies have taken such a

:02:33. > :02:43.

:02:43. > :02:50.pounding over this time. So they're just coming through Deanes Drop.

:02:50. > :03:00.Julie Bresset enjoying the isolation of being in front. Most

:03:00. > :03:01.

:03:01. > :03:07.of these riders choosing two chain rings. We have a crash. She has

:03:07. > :03:13.block Georgia Gould. We talked about this by the fact that Sabine

:03:13. > :03:18.Spitz was not comfortable on the technical sections. Whilst it is in

:03:18. > :03:26.great news for Sabine Spitz or Georgia Gould. It is no soft

:03:26. > :03:32.landing. Georgia Gould did not try to pass or push on, she waited.

:03:32. > :03:37.Dahle having a terrible ride, already in trouble. She has a

:03:37. > :03:42.puncture and she has to get the bike round to the technical section.

:03:42. > :03:50.They do carry a self inflating canister on their bikes. If she has

:03:50. > :03:54.had more than one puncture, she may have used it. She might have to

:03:54. > :03:59.abandon the race, she will be so disappointed. Be to is so sad to

:03:59. > :04:05.see this legendary rider because it will probably be her last. She was

:04:05. > :04:09.one of the favourites, she has just won the World Cup. She rode it on

:04:09. > :04:17.experience, but she will be disappointed. She won the gold

:04:17. > :04:23.medal in Athens in 2004, but missed out in Atlanta by one place. But

:04:23. > :04:30.Sabine Spitz, she has got a lot of work to do now. She has got to

:04:30. > :04:35.catch up. Close the gap on Julie Bresset. Georgia Gould, she is

:04:35. > :04:39.having a fantastic day out. She was not one of the names, you spoke to

:04:39. > :04:44.anyone around here, any of the pundits and people in the know, she

:04:44. > :04:49.was not a name that it was mentioned. If you are going to

:04:49. > :04:55.produce personal best performances, this is the time to do it. She is

:04:55. > :04:59.driving on, she wants to go through. Sabine Spitz is slowing down.

:04:59. > :05:07.think she knows she is not that good at the technical sections and

:05:07. > :05:13.does not want to end up over the handlebars again. A lot of the

:05:13. > :05:19.riders running harder pressure. They can press by about three to

:05:19. > :05:25.four macro inches. If you are hitting some of those rocks, that

:05:25. > :05:30.could be enough to see you go over the tops. And the last did a great

:05:30. > :05:40.ride earlier on, but perhaps paying the price now. She is still in

:05:40. > :05:42.

:05:42. > :05:47.touch. They will know that Sabine Spitz is there for the taking.

:05:47. > :05:56.Esther Suss from Switzerland. What has happened to Catherine Pendrel,

:05:56. > :06:02.she has dropped away? In such a hot day, and no cover, if you go off

:06:02. > :06:05.really hard, you pay a terrible price. And I think that is what has

:06:06. > :06:13.happened to Catherine Pendrel. It has not happened to Julie Bresset,

:06:13. > :06:18.she is away. And driving home that advantage. She now has a very clear

:06:18. > :06:24.view, backed down these switchbacks, just how much of the lead she has

:06:24. > :06:31.extended. Georgia Gould almost a mirroring her. And then Sabine

:06:31. > :06:37.Spitz coming round the switch back now. I think she is starting to

:06:37. > :06:45.slow down, losing pace all of the time. Just starting the bottom of

:06:45. > :06:51.this Snake Hill, you can see and there last -- Annie Last. Then you

:06:51. > :07:01.have Sabine Spitz and Georgia Gould. Be Julie Bresset exiting the top of

:07:01. > :07:01.

:07:01. > :07:08.Snake Hill. The first six or seven riders spread over an entire

:07:08. > :07:13.hillside. I think we can expect in the next lap or so, they will apply

:07:13. > :07:16.the 80% rule and start to take out the back markers. It will be

:07:16. > :07:22.between three and four minutes, I will have to go to a calculator to

:07:22. > :07:26.tell exactly. But three of four minutes behind the leading rider,

:07:26. > :07:32.you will be pulled out of this race. The don't want any interference

:07:33. > :07:37.from the back markers, they don't want them getting in the way. A

:07:37. > :07:42.little bit more over the top, and throw the bottle away. A great

:07:42. > :07:47.souvenir for a spectator. It will be three minutes, I think, looking

:07:47. > :07:57.at it. It is not much when you see the gaps appearing between the

:07:57. > :07:57.

:07:57. > :08:00.front riders will stop I can see less than 15 riders being able to

:08:00. > :08:10.complete this race. You can see the pounding on the muscles as they

:08:10. > :08:20.come down these rocky sections. Georgia Gould in second place.

:08:20. > :08:23.

:08:23. > :08:29.Going underneath the track. Over into the rabbit hole, as it is

:08:29. > :08:34.known. If you have just joined us, this is the women's Olympic

:08:34. > :08:44.mountain bike cross-country. Six laps, and we are just over halfway

:08:44. > :08:54.through. Using the bankers -- banking root for start keeping the

:08:54. > :08:55.

:08:55. > :09:01.momentum, it is much more important. Sabine Spitz is not giving up.

:09:01. > :09:09.Sabine Spitz is in third place. The reigning Olympic champion, almost

:09:09. > :09:13.41 years old. She is clinging to Georgia Gould, the American, who

:09:13. > :09:17.was sat in the middle of the pack and caught up in traffic on the

:09:17. > :09:24.first lap. But made a fantastic stride forward towards the end of

:09:24. > :09:28.the second lap. She has been slowly reeling in Julie Bresset. But Julie

:09:28. > :09:35.Bresset, making this looked very easy at the moment, looking very

:09:35. > :09:42.comfortable. Very good, consistent all rounder. There is not one

:09:42. > :09:49.section of her race which is weaker at the moment. The tyre choice, no

:09:49. > :09:55.big knobbly tyres, you need more surface contact. They go for the

:09:55. > :10:02.finer tread pattern to dig into the gravel. This course would have been

:10:02. > :10:07.absolutely treacherous in the rain. You can see and bandage on Julie

:10:07. > :10:15.Bresset's left-arm. Both of the French riders went down in practice

:10:15. > :10:25.yesterday. So reminder of how treacherous it is. You can get skin

:10:25. > :10:26.

:10:27. > :10:33.suits, it is a lighter way of of using clothing. No use for pockets

:10:33. > :10:39.because they get regular feeding zones. And also there is

:10:39. > :10:45.aerodynamics. Another great view of one of the technical sections as

:10:45. > :10:53.Julie Bresset it drops into that. Picking her way through these it

:10:53. > :10:58.may ease of boulders. Such sharp edges. If you go too hard, you miss

:10:58. > :11:03.your line or put your tyre into one of those rocks, suddenly they huge

:11:03. > :11:08.lead that Julie Bresset has extended, could be gone. You have

:11:08. > :11:15.to remember, talking about Georgia Gould, she was second in the test

:11:15. > :11:21.events on this course some time ago. Has been a little bit quiet since.

:11:21. > :11:29.Competing largely in the US. That is why we have not seen too much of

:11:29. > :11:35.her. Finishing very high in all of those events. As we go back to the

:11:35. > :11:41.leader. How do you pick a line through that? Total commitment in

:11:41. > :11:46.mountain biking. No hesitation. There is a line through the rocky

:11:46. > :11:52.sections, but a few inches either side and you would be down. And if

:11:52. > :11:56.you go down on there, the chances of the breaking bones is very high.

:11:56. > :12:01.With Julie Bresset, you used to see a lot of riders getting over the

:12:01. > :12:07.back wheel in those sections, but she committed a lot of her weight

:12:07. > :12:14.forward to get the speed up? Yes, confidence, leaning forwards. They

:12:14. > :12:22.are mock desperately steep, just a very rocky. -- not desperately

:12:22. > :12:28.steep. Sabine Spitz has got back on terms. You can see in the styles,

:12:28. > :12:32.Georgia Gould working hard just to stay in the wheel. It is not over,

:12:32. > :12:39.you do see riders blowing in this race as you come to the second

:12:39. > :12:44.third. Julie Bresset has set such an incredible pace. Without any one

:12:44. > :12:52.pushing behind her, can she sustain it? Even when she was leading, she

:12:52. > :12:56.was leading with maybe 5%, 10% left in the bank. Georgia Gould tried to

:12:56. > :13:02.force on. She looks like she is puffing now. They is no where to

:13:02. > :13:05.recover, there is no where to sit in the wheels. It is a visible

:13:05. > :13:12.marker, the wheel in front but no shelter. She is struggling to stay

:13:12. > :13:17.in touch. The heat will have an effect, they are sheltered in this

:13:18. > :13:23.bit here. But such a low speeds, once you overheat, it is difficult

:13:23. > :13:29.to recover. I think we will see some riders close to having heat

:13:29. > :13:34.stroke before the day is out. Just over half-an-hour of racing. If you

:13:34. > :13:41.are wearing lighter all whiter outfits. New talked about it with

:13:41. > :13:46.some of the Italians are choosing to wear white instead of a

:13:46. > :13:56.traditional blue-collar? The s, the simple white garment on a hot day

:13:56. > :13:59.

:13:59. > :14:03.like this has got to be something of an advantage. Not much movement

:14:03. > :14:09.at the top at the moment. Julie Bresset leads from Sabine Spitz.

:14:09. > :14:19.Georgia Gould has had at fantastic couple of laps, but she is starting

:14:19. > :14:20.

:14:20. > :14:24.to get tired. Camp Irina Kalentieva and Annie Last draw her in

:14:24. > :14:28.question-marks Annie Last is nearly a minute behind Julie Bresset now.

:14:28. > :14:34.I cannot see her getting back on terms. Julie Bresset looks in

:14:34. > :14:41.control, her body language says, I am working hard but I am choosing

:14:41. > :14:46.the pace I am riding at. We see Sabine Spitz, experienced rider,

:14:46. > :14:54.did not panic or go with Georgia Gould, she just let the American

:14:54. > :15:00.come back to her. Georgia Gould the dropping away, as the quadruple

:15:00. > :15:07.Olympian, now she has made it to this London 2012 event. Sabine

:15:07. > :15:12.Spitz is pulling away, a bit of a second wind for her. Julie Bresset,

:15:12. > :15:18.coming down into this last little climb that carries her into the

:15:18. > :15:28.finish straight. There is two laps to go from here and she has

:15:28. > :15:41.

:15:41. > :15:48.reeled this in a little. She has been going OK in the World Cup. 6th

:15:48. > :15:58.at Val d'Isere. In defending champion, she knows about pressure.

:15:58. > :16:05.You can see Julie Bresset. At the top of the picture. I think Julie

:16:05. > :16:14.Bresset is getting quicker. Another super-fast lapped. She is not

:16:14. > :16:19.slowing at all. This gap is now becoming very serious. Sabine Spitz

:16:19. > :16:25.is the most experienced defending champion, she knows about pressure.

:16:25. > :16:33.There is nothing she can do about the young French woman. Over 30

:16:33. > :16:43.seconds behind now. That is a big gap. Just over one hour and 40

:16:43. > :16:44.

:16:44. > :16:54.seconds. Georgia Gould is tarring all the time. Kalentieva, she will

:16:54. > :16:56.

:16:57. > :17:02.come through in 4th place. Sheikh is almost one minute off the pace.

:17:02. > :17:11.Here is Annie Last entering the frame, really working hard. Gasping

:17:11. > :17:21.for air. Esther Suss starting to close the gap, using Annie as a

:17:21. > :17:30.

:17:30. > :17:35.marker. She has been during her in. pulling away. This course has found

:17:35. > :17:41.everybody's their will. This one was a surprise, Catharine Pendrel

:17:41. > :17:49.was the favourite for the event. She looked so dangers on the first

:17:49. > :17:55.lap, then she has gently fallen down the pack. Unbelievably,

:17:55. > :18:02.Dawidowicz, from Poland, who fell quite badly on the first lap in an

:18:02. > :18:08.early section, has pulled herself back ahead of Catharine Pendrel.

:18:08. > :18:11.She will be bitterly disappointed, reigning world champion. Recently

:18:11. > :18:19.crowned 2012 World Cup champion. The favourite for the gold, well

:18:19. > :18:29.down for a pack. Very wary of that section where she

:18:29. > :18:37.fell. Nobody wants to go the easy but slower route. A lot of courage

:18:37. > :18:41.to fall like that and persevere. In Russia and dealing with this level

:18:41. > :18:45.of technical requirement on this descend with so much fatigue in

:18:45. > :18:50.your legs, with more than one hour of racing behind you.

:18:50. > :18:58.Your ability to concentrate as you become dehydrated becomes harder

:18:58. > :19:02.and harder. Keeping your focus is a challenge. I don't think people

:19:02. > :19:08.realise the demand on the muscles, it takes days to recover from a

:19:08. > :19:18.race. The body takes such a pounding, as you try to hold the

:19:18. > :19:19.

:19:19. > :19:24.bike rigid through all of those Rock Garden so. -- rock gardens.

:19:24. > :19:31.Julie Bresset has had plenty of opportunity to see how much of a

:19:31. > :19:36.lead she has stretched out over Sabine Spitz and Georgia Gould.

:19:36. > :19:42.That second place in the World Cup in Val d'Isere, she was on the way

:19:42. > :19:50.to form, it wasn't her peak. A performance of her lifetime here,

:19:50. > :19:57.riding with the charity, she has paced her effort -- riding with

:19:57. > :20:03.maturity. Waiting for some daylight to appear, she hasn't pushed

:20:03. > :20:10.herself into the red at all. Technically, she has been good.

:20:10. > :20:17.Physically, I think she seems to have the endurance. Sabine Spitz

:20:17. > :20:27.and Georgia Gould had the edge in the opening three laps, but she

:20:27. > :20:32.

:20:32. > :20:40.hasn't slowed done. Kalentieva. Very composed and focused, as she

:20:41. > :20:46.drives up here. We really didn't know, having skipped several World

:20:46. > :20:51.Cups, how the Russian would perform here. It is a solid performance.

:20:51. > :21:01.Some big gaps are forming now. waiting to see if Annie Last has

:21:01. > :21:08.held off Esther Suss. Esther Suss has come through. A fantastic start

:21:08. > :21:14.from Annie. She is young. She has chosen to compete in all of the

:21:14. > :21:19.senior World Cups to get experience. She could have ridden as an under

:21:19. > :21:24.23. And walked away with that. She has ridden with the best in the

:21:24. > :21:29.world. She doesn't want to be compared with the younger riders.

:21:29. > :21:33.Ranked 5th in the world at the moment. Plenty of time for her to

:21:33. > :21:39.develop. Technically, she is already possibly the best in the

:21:39. > :21:49.world. She just needs to bring that physical ability up. Julie Bresset,

:21:49. > :21:51.

:21:51. > :21:55.23, is all there. Then 40, 32, 34. Not a young woman's game.

:21:55. > :22:02.endurance side of it, the physical aspect of mountain biking is what

:22:02. > :22:10.you can see now, this wonderful shot we have of the climb. It takes

:22:10. > :22:19.years to build up the muscle mass. Technical skill is the first thing.

:22:19. > :22:26.Endurance, that comes with time. Julie Bresset is ahead of her time.

:22:26. > :22:35.Just 23 years of age. Annie Last is the youngest rider in the top 15 by

:22:35. > :22:42.some margin. Julie Bresset takes a bottle from her team. She makes her

:22:42. > :22:51.way out of the technical station. She is going through the rabbit

:22:51. > :23:00.hole, the track goes underneath itself.

:23:00. > :23:10.Sabine Spitz is chasing had done. Is the deficit to great? I think

:23:10. > :23:17.

:23:17. > :23:21.the results are solidifying now. That is the split time. If Julie

:23:21. > :23:26.Bresset does that at all, the German will be on top of her. This

:23:26. > :23:32.race isn't over. We have seen with one mistake how much time you can

:23:32. > :23:38.lose. I have seen it in World Cups this year. The lead changing hands

:23:38. > :23:44.at the last moment, because of a crash. Even if it is not a mistake

:23:44. > :23:51.from Julie Bresset. Mechanical malfunction, a puncture, anything.

:23:51. > :23:55.Absolutely. Julie Bresset does have a good cushion. Potentially, to

:23:55. > :24:05.deal with something like that. is exactly what she wants. She

:24:05. > :24:06.

:24:24. > :24:24.

:24:24. > :24:33.selecting the right sprocket at the back. Most of choosing to go with

:24:33. > :24:38.tulle -- dual chain rings. It saves on weight. It makes for faster

:24:38. > :24:43.changes as well. And you are getting rid of an extra bit of

:24:43. > :24:53.equipment. There's less debate about. One hand to change gear.

:24:53. > :24:54.

:24:54. > :24:59.That is it. She is well into the closing stages of this race.

:24:59. > :25:03.Probably about 20 minutes to go. You can see from her attacking

:25:03. > :25:11.style, she is sensing, I can become Olympic champion, I can start to

:25:11. > :25:21.push it home. That is a huge lead. A glimpse of that aerial view, she

:25:22. > :25:27.is starting to drive that right. -- bike. There is hardly any rest

:25:27. > :25:32.on this course. You are bouncing off the rocks, sticking to the line

:25:32. > :25:42.you have seen in training. Or you are climbing hard up the banks. You

:25:42. > :25:46.can see the wind in the grass. That is probably quite well from --

:25:46. > :25:54.welcome. She is not slowing down, look how

:25:54. > :26:00.quickly she has taken that on. great line through the rocks. You

:26:00. > :26:05.cannot see unless you have a head on shot, there is a correct line

:26:05. > :26:14.through, you have to be millimetre perfect or you get in trouble.

:26:14. > :26:18.Using the berms which have built up on the corners. So far, close to

:26:18. > :26:27.immaculate performance from Julie Bresset of France. The battle is

:26:27. > :26:33.still not finished behind. Silver and bronze. Sabine Spitz. She hates,

:26:33. > :26:40.she is not as comfortable on these sections as his Julie Bresset or

:26:40. > :26:46.Georgia Gould just behind her. Quite unusual on this course. That

:26:46. > :26:50.is a great shot taking the line through the rocks. A lot of this

:26:50. > :26:56.course, you can see how open it is. There are pink tassels at the end

:26:56. > :27:01.of the road, they must stay within them. Normally there are barriers

:27:01. > :27:06.or tape but they wanted to keep it open for these 20,000 spectators.

:27:06. > :27:10.They decided to mark the edge of the course, they cannot pass

:27:10. > :27:15.outside or they will be disqualified. Here is Sabine Spitz

:27:15. > :27:20.going through the leap of faith, that big downhill section letters

:27:20. > :27:30.with rocks. We have seen their take some would-be easy routes come up

:27:30. > :27:30.

:27:30. > :27:40.on the side of the course -- some of the easy routes. She is using

:27:40. > :27:52.

:27:52. > :28:01.traditional 26 inch wheels, sharing that the jury is still out between

:28:01. > :28:07.the 29th and 26 inch wheels. It is all about the legs.

:28:07. > :28:17.Will we get a glimpse of the Russian, Kalentieva? She is behind

:28:17. > :28:17.

:28:17. > :28:22.these two. Has she managed to reel them in at all? A battle for the

:28:22. > :28:29.bronze medal. At the moment, certainly, the top three are very

:28:29. > :28:34.settled. Just a glimpse, at the very back, Kalentieva of Russia.

:28:34. > :28:44.Who knows now how far away she is from a medal. Sabine Spitz,

:28:44. > :28:49.

:28:49. > :28:53.comfortably in silver. There is the New Zealand SAT test, Karen Hanlen,

:28:53. > :29:03.stopping to jump off her bike and running through that section.

:29:03. > :29:12.

:29:12. > :29:16.specifically this year. It is all about this one. Nothing about World

:29:16. > :29:23.Cup, she has focused all her efforts on these Olympic Games, her

:29:24. > :29:28.very first Olympic Games. It is not a bad one, really, is it? As good a

:29:28. > :29:38.debut as you can get. You start to get the sensation now that it would

:29:38. > :29:39.

:29:39. > :29:49.take an awful lot of bad luck to be able to slow her down even down to

:29:49. > :29:59.

:29:59. > :30:08.arms and her knees. She has come so far since the bronze medal in the

:30:08. > :30:12.under 23 race in 2009! She has romped through the field, what such

:30:12. > :30:20.a mature experience, you would think she had been doing it for 20

:30:20. > :30:23.years. There is an experienced rider, Emily Batty. And other rider

:30:23. > :30:33.expected to become testing at least the top five and we have not seen

:30:33. > :30:37.

:30:37. > :30:44.an awful lot of her. At the moment she is one of the few riders who

:30:44. > :30:49.might have got into some technical difficulty at the start. She is in

:30:49. > :30:59.25th out of the 30 that started. The judge shows you how hard this

:30:59. > :31:03.

:31:03. > :31:10.course is. We have been looking at this woman here. Julie Bresset, lap

:31:11. > :31:17.No. 5 and she is flying, one hour and 15 minutes, 45 seconds. She is

:31:17. > :31:24.doing well. Holding the pace at 15 minutes a lap. She looks like she

:31:24. > :31:30.is working harder, but that fatigue. It is affecting everybody. It is

:31:30. > :31:37.all about consistency, mountain biking. She is maintaining the pace,

:31:37. > :31:44.that is the incredible thing. waiting for Georgia Gould to

:31:44. > :31:49.explode. She won't give in. An experienced Sabine Spitz in front

:31:49. > :31:59.of her. I am wondering if it will come down to a sprint between those

:31:59. > :32:05.two. Julie Bresset will have around a minute's lead. Julia best set is

:32:05. > :32:09.out of the lead. The battle now is for bronze and silver as Irina

:32:09. > :32:16.Kalentieva makes her way down. Not too far off the pace but she does

:32:16. > :32:20.have a lot of work to do. She is finishing well. As she comes round

:32:20. > :32:25.this corner she will be able to seize Sabine Spitz and Georgia

:32:25. > :32:31.Gould on the hill in front of her. That is not an insurmountable

:32:32. > :32:35.challenge. It will depend on Sabine Spitz and Georgia Gould, maybe the

:32:35. > :32:42.fight between them will take its toll and allow the Russians to get

:32:42. > :32:51.back on terms. But she will have to do something special with just over

:32:51. > :33:01.15 minutes of racing left. Esther Suss coming round that corner. One

:33:01. > :33:06.

:33:06. > :33:16.lap remains. And the bell is ringing. Esther Suss, has taken the

:33:16. > :33:16.

:33:16. > :33:21.5th. Julie Bresset already on the descent. A welcome bit of shade in

:33:21. > :33:29.the trees. Just a few minutes, if she can keep it together, between

:33:29. > :33:33.her and the Olympic title. Struggling a little bit on these

:33:33. > :33:41.technical sessions and then grinding her way back to the German.

:33:41. > :33:51.She will have to find something special. Julia prese leading,

:33:51. > :33:51.

:33:51. > :33:57.Sabine Spitz, over a minute off the pace. Georgia Gould in third, Irina

:33:57. > :34:07.Kalentieva enforced. Annie Last is in 7th. Alexandra Engen from Sweden

:34:07. > :34:17.has made a huge surge at the last four Stock and then Tanja Zac will

:34:17. > :34:28.

:34:28. > :34:36.-- coasting along the top of the rich as they drop into the trees.

:34:36. > :34:43.It is almost 75% of this course is open. It is very different to

:34:43. > :34:48.normal cross-country courses. is the leader, still looking well

:34:48. > :34:54.on top a bit, showing no signs of cracking. Working hard but very

:34:54. > :35:02.much in control. The cameraman and looking hopefully for another rider

:35:02. > :35:06.behind her and then realising nobody was in sight. Georgia Gould,

:35:06. > :35:11.such a good challenge for start she has to make the decision - that

:35:11. > :35:18.does she have it in her to catch Sabine Spitz? I think if anything,

:35:18. > :35:21.for the last few hundred metres, Georgia Gould has started to real

:35:21. > :35:27.Sabine Spitz in false start she can smell a silver medal here at

:35:27. > :35:33.Hadleigh Farm. I think it will come down to a sprint, perhaps? Working

:35:33. > :35:39.hard now. They are both suffering, everybody is suffering at this

:35:39. > :35:45.stage. Just a few minutes left. Can the American, Georgia Gould changed

:35:45. > :35:50.the colour of the medal she is on course for. She is trying, she is

:35:50. > :35:56.on the wheel of the American. driving so hard, you can see the

:35:56. > :36:01.pain and determination on her face. Has been racing in America mostly

:36:01. > :36:08.this year. But she wasn't on the list of favourites, so she is

:36:08. > :36:13.excelling. You get the sense Sabine Spitz probably heard her breathing

:36:13. > :36:18.down her neck and decided it was time to dig in and get going again?

:36:19. > :36:23.A lot of the riders will have people from their country around

:36:23. > :36:33.the course telling them what is going on. You will see boards at

:36:33. > :36:34.

:36:34. > :36:44.the side of the track, showing them the information they need to know.

:36:44. > :36:46.

:36:46. > :36:51.So, Georgia Gould is desperately trying to reel in Sabine Spitz. She

:36:51. > :36:56.is making this look easy, isn't she? Nobody is going to touch this

:36:56. > :37:02.23-year-old now. She stayed with the group and did not do anything

:37:02. > :37:08.clever. Went to the front, took control and got the measure of them.

:37:08. > :37:13.And then waited until it was the right time. Tested them a couple of

:37:13. > :37:18.times up this climb. Sensed there was daylight and pushed on a bit

:37:18. > :37:28.harder and nobody could respond. She just eased away, metronomic

:37:28. > :37:30.

:37:30. > :37:36.lead. She has been so even paced on such a hard to rain. Such an

:37:36. > :37:41.incredible skill. Julie Bresset concentrating, keeping her focus.

:37:41. > :37:48.Dropping one bottle and keeping up the next. -- picking up the next.

:37:48. > :37:54.She has had an almost perfect race, this 23-year-old? She has made no

:37:54. > :37:59.mistakes we have been able to see. The battle for the bronze medal is

:37:59. > :38:04.more in contention, but it is stretching out now. It has always

:38:05. > :38:11.been Sabine Spitz putting the pressure on. Georgia Gould tried it

:38:12. > :38:16.two laps to make a charge, but the German real had back in. Georgia

:38:16. > :38:24.Gould will have to try something special if she wants that silver

:38:24. > :38:29.medal. I think we saw they used her last reserves in that last lap.

:38:29. > :38:33.Sabine Spitz sensed it coming and you don't do three Olympics and not

:38:33. > :38:39.know how to deal with the pressure. She gritted her teeth, strengthened

:38:39. > :38:47.her resolve and got stuck in. I think Sabine Spitz is desperate to

:38:47. > :38:51.claim the silver medal. They are at the same pace for travelling, just

:38:51. > :38:57.a 15 second gap between them. Sabine Spitz is putting on the

:38:57. > :39:03.pressure. She does not want this to come down to a sprint. This is the

:39:03. > :39:07.moment she is choosing to drive on. It is working. Georgia Gould will

:39:07. > :39:13.know eight minutes of pain could be the difference for her between

:39:13. > :39:21.bronze and silver. Mentally, she has got to dig deep and start

:39:21. > :39:25.driving on these climbs. Been some real surprises, with Dahle not

:39:25. > :39:33.being in the running, Catherine Pendrel, the favourites, not here

:39:33. > :39:38.at all. She is the way down at the moment. And it wasn't through any

:39:38. > :39:44.kind of mechanical problem, just off the pace. That was the surprise

:39:44. > :39:52.for everybody. Irina Kalentieva almost 30 seconds off Georgia Gould

:39:52. > :39:55.now. The medals seems safe, we know who is going to be in there. We are

:39:55. > :40:04.just deciding who will take the silver and who will take the bronze

:40:04. > :40:11.medal. Because this woman, has been emphatic. For almost an hour and a

:40:11. > :40:17.half now, she has dominated this race. She let Annie Last set the

:40:17. > :40:23.pace for the first lap. And then slowly started to assert herself,

:40:23. > :40:29.pulling these three riders away. This Sabine Spitz and Georgia Gould

:40:29. > :40:35.and then just a relentless pace she set at the front has seen her

:40:35. > :40:42.extend. The last real, hard climb for her now. She knows when she

:40:42. > :40:49.gets on the top, it is mostly running down to the finish. She can

:40:49. > :40:54.afford to be careful and not take any chances. She can choose any way

:40:54. > :41:00.through now, if she wants for star we can see a few of the coaches in

:41:00. > :41:07.the finish area. A couple of them are starting to dance. Looking a

:41:07. > :41:13.little bit nervous. It is going to be a charge for the minor places.

:41:13. > :41:19.Everyone has enjoyed the day out. Beautiful Sunshine, a cool breeze

:41:19. > :41:29.off the sea. Fantastic scenery. And in means you can see almost all the

:41:29. > :41:31.

:41:31. > :41:41.way round for the five kilometres of this course. I imagine there

:41:41. > :41:44.

:41:44. > :41:51.will be a large party preparing to get going in France. A two year

:41:51. > :41:57.elite contract for Julie Bresset, and they will be immensely proud

:41:57. > :42:02.with what she has done. Georgia Gould choosing be easier line, and

:42:02. > :42:07.then switching back. I think she has conceded a shot at the silver

:42:07. > :42:16.medal by making that choice. Not happy to take the hardest route,

:42:16. > :42:21.and that probably cost two seconds which could be critical. The shot

:42:22. > :42:27.of the rail camera, set up on the climb. We have had some fantastic

:42:27. > :42:32.imagery. This is the best imagery we have seen off a mountain bike

:42:32. > :42:41.race. Tracking the riders through the most critical climbs and

:42:41. > :42:46.descents false start here is Julie Bresset, up the Breath Taker. She

:42:46. > :42:51.is just going to Crest, then she has a winding descent that leads

:42:51. > :42:59.her down through the technical zone for the last time. She will be

:42:59. > :43:04.sensing of there is only two climbs to go. Coasting down 4 star Kishi

:43:04. > :43:08.is still pushing on, you can see the wheels sliding into these

:43:08. > :43:13.grooves false start you almost sense she is enjoying the descent.

:43:13. > :43:18.For me, don't take any risks, you have got this in the bag. But she

:43:18. > :43:24.is not taking her thoughts of the pressure. Georgia Gould a thumping

:43:24. > :43:29.at the pedals. I think she has done the right of her life, the young

:43:29. > :43:34.American. She just refuses to give in. Made a mistake when she chose

:43:34. > :43:44.the easier line through the last rock section. Considering the form

:43:44. > :43:48.

:43:49. > :43:57.she came in here on, she has done fantastically well. At 40 years old,

:43:58. > :44:07.Sabine Spitz is an inspiration. To anyone who thought her elite level

:44:08. > :44:08.

:44:08. > :44:16.sport was confined to people in their 20s and 30s! Julie Bresset

:44:16. > :44:22.coming round. This is the last climb, a short, steep climb. Very

:44:22. > :44:31.technical, those hairpin bends. It is a tight circle on which to turn

:44:31. > :44:34.the bike. Some very evil tree roots. They are treacherous when it is wet.

:44:35. > :44:44.They forced Samuel Weale to slide sideways. In these dry conditions,

:44:44. > :44:49.not too bad. -- your wheel. This would have been different in the

:44:49. > :44:54.rain forced on she has not let up, look how hard she is driving.

:44:54. > :44:59.promise of an Olympic gold medal spurring her arm up this hill.

:44:59. > :45:03.Along with the crowds at Hadleigh Farm. Already celebrating, a little

:45:03. > :45:07.wave to the camera. She knows she has a big gap, she will have been

:45:07. > :45:17.told by her team at the side of the road. How could that would have

:45:17. > :45:27.

:45:27. > :45:32.helped. She is coming into the now. What a ride for the 23-year-

:45:32. > :45:38.old, her first Olympic Games, and she will get a gold medal, that is

:45:38. > :45:46.about as good as it gets. Enjoying this lap, effectively a lap of

:45:46. > :45:52.honour, waving to the crowd. She knows she has time to spare.

:45:52. > :45:57.Tactically and physically, the perfect race for Julie Bresset.

:45:57. > :46:07.Around this last corner in front of the 20,000 strong crowd. She is

:46:07. > :46:14.

:46:14. > :46:20.Bresset of France the gold medal. Here, at the mountain bike cross-

:46:20. > :46:28.country. She is absolutely delighted. Such a consistent ride,

:46:28. > :46:36.she didn't put a foot wrong the entire day. Moving up to the big

:46:36. > :46:44.league. Watching her here, she barely looks like she is heaving.

:46:44. > :46:54.Just behind, the silver and bronze medal race has been settled. Sabine

:46:54. > :46:55.

:46:55. > :47:01.Spitz, the defending champion, showing as decency -- consistency.

:47:01. > :47:07.Georgia Gould had pressured her but Sabine Spitz responded and got

:47:07. > :47:15.stuck into this flat. She is happy with that, she knows she couldn't

:47:15. > :47:20.have done anything else. Georgia Gould, also, she excelled today.

:47:20. > :47:30.She showed real spirit. She didn't settle for a bronze medal, she

:47:30. > :47:30.

:47:30. > :47:36.tried for silver. Worthy medalists, all three, well clear of the field.

:47:36. > :47:39.A fantastic performance from Julie Bresset, Sabine Spitz and Georgia

:47:39. > :47:49.Gould. The other riders are starting to make their way around

:47:49. > :47:57.

:47:57. > :48:03.now. The Russian, colander macro, taking 4th position. And a

:48:03. > :48:08.fantastic race from Esther Suss. She didn't start that well. She did

:48:08. > :48:15.ever so well in the middle of that race, she reeled in back-to-front

:48:15. > :48:20.pack. You can hear from the cheers that British rider Annie Last is in

:48:20. > :48:30.the finishing area as well. Not quite getting herself into 6th

:48:30. > :48:41.

:48:41. > :48:47.position. That goes to the Swedish everybody saluting the crowd. In

:48:47. > :48:53.road racing, it is only the weather. They have been through such a

:48:53. > :48:59.gladiatorial experience. Annie Last, coming into the finishing straight.

:48:59. > :49:09.The first British rider since Caroline Alexander to qualify for

:49:09. > :49:09.

:49:09. > :49:14.an Olympic spot. A fantastic race for the 21-year-old. She could have

:49:14. > :49:18.stuck in the under 23 category but she stepped up. Riding with the

:49:18. > :49:24.best in the world in the senior category to gain experience and

:49:24. > :49:32.stretch herself. We will be hearing a lot more about Annie Last.

:49:32. > :49:41.fantastic course. If you have enjoyed watching this, then

:49:41. > :49:49.Hadleigh Farm will be open to the public, so make your way down here

:49:49. > :49:54.and enjoy some mountain biking. 9th place for the Canadian.

:49:54. > :50:04.favourite, finishing 3 1/2 minutes in arrears. One of the most

:50:04. > :50:13.

:50:13. > :50:17.weather. The wind has kept it caught enough but the summer has

:50:17. > :50:23.brought out the crowds. The atmosphere has been absolutely

:50:23. > :50:29.fantastic. If it had gone the other way, it would have been a rough day.

:50:29. > :50:34.20,000 tickets were sold, sold out. What a day out, largely because of

:50:34. > :50:44.the weather, fantastic competition, a beautiful course they can see in

:50:44. > :51:14.

:51:14. > :51:20.all directions. Davison takes 11th Annie, you powered through that

:51:20. > :51:30.first lap, how much did that affect the rest of the race? I wanted to

:51:30. > :51:30.

:51:30. > :51:40.get a good start, to make sure I got here on the first lap. -- got

:51:40. > :51:44.

:51:44. > :51:50.clear. So that I didn't get stuck. Towards the end of the race, I

:51:50. > :51:56.started to slip back a little bit. But I came today to get the best

:51:56. > :52:01.out of myself. That is what I have done, I am really happy. Great to

:52:01. > :52:11.finish smiling. How do feel when you see the field opening up, at

:52:11. > :52:13.

:52:13. > :52:20.the end? There is so much to think about. You are thinking about where

:52:20. > :52:25.you are putting your wheels, power, you are racing, try to stay with

:00:35. > :00:42.He had swum under that Olympic time in the last 12 months, so it was on

:00:42. > :00:46.the cards. We have seen an Olympic record equalled in the fencing and

:00:46. > :00:55.beaten in the swimming. The Egyptian. He has broken his own

:00:55. > :01:05.Olympic record he set in Beijing in 2008. A good start off the blocks

:01:26. > :01:33.This was always on the cards that the Olympic record would be broken

:01:33. > :01:39.and that is the man who has done it. Interestingly, there are only three

:02:34. > :02:39.equestrian. With the show jumping they have never seen the horse they

:02:39. > :02:45.are about to jump on. They draw lots, so it will be interesting to

:02:45. > :02:48.see what happens after the next round. With one more day to go of

:02:48. > :02:52.these Olympic Games, it seems incredible how they have flown back.

:02:52. > :03:01.But sometimes you have to slow things down to get a snapshot of

:03:01. > :03:06.the iconic moments we have all witnessed.

:03:06. > :03:16.What makes television at what it is, is its mastery of the moving

:03:28. > :03:28.

:03:28. > :04:47.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 41 seconds

:04:47. > :04:57.And again, the connection between the moving and the still. The

:04:57. > :04:59.

:04:59. > :05:05.fastest mover of them all taking the still. The captured instinct.

:05:05. > :05:11.Wasn't that beautiful? First thing this morning, just after 9:30am, Ed

:05:11. > :05:16.McKeever was poised in the Kayak single 200m final. He was in search

:05:16. > :05:22.of Great Britain's 26 gold medal of the Games. As the fastest qualifier,

:05:22. > :05:32.he was in a great position to propel himself ahead of the rest of

:05:32. > :05:42.

:05:42. > :05:52.tension. Miklos Dudas, the giant Hungarian. Hungary have brought an

:05:52. > :05:53.

:05:53. > :06:00.army of fans. And they have been so successful in this sport. There

:06:00. > :06:05.will be the customary during for the shortest man in the field. Ed

:06:05. > :06:15.McKeever. He won his heat, won his semi-final but what a challenge he

:06:15. > :06:19.

:06:19. > :06:27.will face from the Canadian. Quickest in the semi-finals. Then

:06:27. > :06:37.we have the Surbean, the European champion. You know it is a good

:06:37. > :06:46.

:06:46. > :06:52.race when Ronald rock only just tension. The waters of Eton Dorney

:06:52. > :06:58.rippling gently but about to be churned up by the quickest paddlers.

:06:58. > :07:01.The men's 200m individual kayak. The and as it is wonderful. Heavy

:07:02. > :07:11.with hope for Ed McKeever. Britain might have a gold medal to

:07:12. > :07:31.

:07:31. > :07:37.is powering on. He has such great strength. Ed McKeever holding on at

:07:37. > :07:46.the moment as they come into the final 50m. He will have to work

:07:46. > :07:55.hard. Still holding on, it is gold for Ed McKeever and Great Britain.

:07:55. > :08:02.He becomes the Olympic champion. He went out fast and held on strong,

:08:02. > :08:08.he was uncatchable. He has the gold medal. Absolutely fantastic, he

:08:08. > :08:14.blew them away from the start as he powered away. Getting his stroke

:08:14. > :08:19.rate a nice and height. He left everybody else waiting to catch up.

:08:19. > :08:26.He will be absolutely delighted to top of what has been a fantastic

:08:26. > :08:32.three years of competition since this 200m race has come in.

:08:32. > :08:38.takes the acclaim from the crowd. Mark de Jonge comes home for the

:08:38. > :08:41.bronze medal. The man who thought he wouldn't be here in the Olympic

:08:41. > :08:47.Games after breaking his finger earlier this year. He takes the

:08:47. > :08:53.bronze for Canada. Max Beaumont just missing out for France. But

:08:53. > :09:01.they could not get near Ed McKeever. He had a comfortable lead and

:09:01. > :09:06.maintained it. It was incredible. This is the start he is renowned

:09:06. > :09:12.for, he just gets his top speed, arms propelling and using his

:09:12. > :09:16.upper-body. You can see the rotation through his shoulders. He

:09:16. > :09:22.uses his strength to drive those blades into the water. The focus

:09:22. > :09:28.this man has is incredible and the has not been fazed by anything

:09:28. > :09:33.during this Olympic competition. did not need a little surge because

:09:33. > :09:43.often these races are settled by inches and not feet. But that was a

:09:43. > :09:46.

:09:46. > :09:52.Hansen victory. That is what it means to become Olympic champion. -

:09:52. > :10:02.- Hansen victory. What a performance from Ed McKeever. The

:10:25. > :10:27.

:10:27. > :10:31.bronze for Canada. Saul Rivero That is what is is all about, Ed

:10:31. > :10:35.McKeever, you have just been part of the medal ceremony, what was it

:10:36. > :10:40.like? You almost don't believe it into a you had your hands on it. I

:10:40. > :10:47.am not sure I will sleep tonight. When the anthem is being played,

:10:47. > :10:52.what things are you thinking about? Just trying to remember the words!

:10:52. > :10:57.An enormous sense of pride, so thankful I could do it in front of

:10:57. > :11:03.my home crowd. I imagine when an athlete is enjoying a moment like

:11:03. > :11:09.that they imagine all the things that made it happen. The fact he

:11:09. > :11:14.moved house, your parents support to do, your fiancee supporting you,

:11:14. > :11:19.and you moving house to be near the training centre. I don't want to

:11:19. > :11:23.disappoint you, I was just in the moment and enjoying it. You have

:11:23. > :11:27.been called the Usain Bolt of canoeing, he has got gold medals,

:11:27. > :11:33.you have got gold medals, what do you think of that? Just pleased I

:11:33. > :11:37.could follow him in that respect. What does the future hold? We be

:11:37. > :11:43.going to Rio? That is four years of training and pain. We will wait and

:11:43. > :11:50.see. I will take a break now for the next few weeks, probably six

:11:50. > :11:56.weeks up until my wedding. And then I will see how I feel. Some

:11:56. > :12:03.exciting times, you had just won the gold medal, your birthday in a

:12:03. > :12:06.couple of weeks and then your wedding. I am getting too old to

:12:07. > :12:13.celebrate birthdays, but the wedding will be a good one. I love

:12:13. > :12:17.the way you just keep touching it. I am making sure it is real. It is

:12:17. > :12:23.out of this world, all well done. I'm sure it will dawn on him very

:12:23. > :12:30.soon. Ed Nicky the getting the second Olympic gold medal in

:12:30. > :12:35.history, the first was Tim Brabants. Now we have Liam Heath and Jon

:12:35. > :12:39.Schofield pedaling over the same distance. Going into this race,

:12:39. > :12:49.they had picked up a medal in every final they have been in this year.

:12:49. > :13:23.

:13:24. > :13:33.today. We are ready for the final the customary British Rohr. 5th

:13:34. > :13:38.

:13:38. > :13:41.quickest coming into the final. This is the per to beat.

:13:41. > :13:51.Astonishingly powerful winning both the heat and semi-final by almost a

:13:51. > :14:15.

:14:15. > :14:20.race in the 200m. It is very rare, might we have it here. In the heats

:14:20. > :14:28.and the semi-finals suggested the Russians are the strong favourites.

:14:28. > :14:33.Perhaps Belarus party fear as well. The lighter crew of Liam Heath and

:14:33. > :14:43.Jon Schofield. The French pair, the world champions in lane two. The

:14:43. > :15:12.

:15:12. > :15:18.No one is going to catch them. It is Postrigay and Dyachenko. Heath

:15:18. > :15:27.and Schofield are just hanging on to silver. Great Britain get the

:15:27. > :15:32.bronze medal. A fine effort, but Postrigay and Dyachenko dominated

:15:32. > :15:39.the heats and a semi-final, and they have blown away the field in

:15:39. > :15:45.the final. Bella a skip the silver medal and Great Britain get the

:15:45. > :15:52.bronze. -- Belarus. They dominated through the heats and semi-finals,

:15:52. > :16:02.and I said they had more to give, which they'd just demonstrated.

:16:02. > :16:03.

:16:03. > :16:13.What a fantastic result for Great Britain. Jonnie Schofield's paddle

:16:13. > :16:22.

:16:22. > :16:31.has given up the ghost. But Russia, imperious. Just a few feet between

:16:31. > :16:35.Belarus and Great Britain. A great race from Heath and Schofield, we

:16:35. > :16:40.could not have expected much more than that. They executed the start

:16:40. > :16:48.really well, but here is the Russian crew. So powerful working

:16:48. > :16:56.so well together. They did not give away anything. They dominated it

:16:56. > :17:00.and they're really made sure the title was theirs. They have

:17:00. > :17:09.dominated the World Cup events, they have won two out of the last

:17:09. > :17:16.three. They were working in unison, they had a look across, then

:17:16. > :17:22.celebrated crossing the line. I think perhaps it is the most

:17:22. > :17:30.comprehensive victory we have seen in the can as sprinting. Absolutely.

:17:30. > :17:38.We kind of half-expected it during the early stages at Eton Dorney,

:17:38. > :17:48.but they did not give anyone else a chance. This is the confirmation of

:17:48. > :17:51.

:17:51. > :17:56.Huge congratulations to Liam Heath and Jon Schofield, wrapping things

:17:56. > :18:00.a beautifully at Eton Dorney. That takes her medal tally to 59. On to

:18:00. > :18:04.diving, and Tom Daley struggled in the prelims last night. He had a

:18:04. > :18:14.good night's sleep because this morning it was the 10m platform

:18:14. > :18:18.

:18:18. > :18:28.finals -- semi-finals. His aim was open better than he did last night.

:18:28. > :18:34.

:18:34. > :18:42.start we were hoping for, he was marginally short of vertical, but

:18:42. > :18:49.it is a step up from last night. He may get over 80 points. It depends

:18:49. > :18:59.how mean that judges are feeling. This is the second round dive. A

:18:59. > :19:07.

:19:07. > :19:17.nice solid start, as opposed to shout about! Beautiful entry into

:19:17. > :19:29.

:19:29. > :19:32.the water. There is still more to two and. -- two rounds. That is

:19:32. > :19:37.another good one for him. A little bit loose as he entered the water,

:19:37. > :19:47.but he keeps the splash down. Moving away from the diving board,

:19:47. > :19:56.

:19:57. > :20:03.sneaking into the paid shape, -- bit low on the water, but he plays

:20:03. > :20:13.the waiting game. This was good last night and it is better today.

:20:13. > :20:13.

:20:13. > :20:23.He has been consistent. 81, 86, 84, this will be told that 85. -- will

:20:23. > :20:26.

:20:26. > :20:36.Daley, the dive of the competition so far for this young man. This is

:20:36. > :20:38.

:20:38. > :20:44.question! Make no mistake, he has responded in exactly the way he

:20:44. > :20:51.needed to today. He went to bed last night, thinking, oh, My

:20:51. > :20:56.goodness, what is it like? Now he has responded. He will definitely

:20:56. > :21:00.be in the top five. It was a lot better than last night. I am

:21:00. > :21:03.getting sharper, and it is hard to compete in the pre-lunch and the

:21:03. > :21:07.semi-final when you know it does not count towards the medals, but

:21:07. > :21:17.you need to do enough to qualify. That is the hardest part done, and

:21:17. > :21:19.

:21:19. > :21:27.now I have done that I will give it Jake Humphrey has arrived. You

:21:27. > :21:31.followed him yesterday, and he was looking shaky. Yes, it was strange

:21:31. > :21:35.because he was really struggling. Before he went off, Leon Taylor

:21:35. > :21:39.said he looks nervous up there. I am hoping that the fact he has had
