:01:53. > :01:58.there. With 541 Team GB athletes in action, there's a lot to keep an

:01:58. > :02:08.eye on over the next 14 days. This is what we've got coming up for you

:02:08. > :02:17.

:02:17. > :02:22.over the course of day three of the time to lose the top hat and tails

:02:22. > :02:28.and put on something a little more racy, as are eventers take on

:02:28. > :02:31.Greenwich Park. The weight of the country's expectations are on your

:02:31. > :02:38.shoulders, it's nice to have somebody to share it with. Tom

:02:38. > :02:42.Daley and Pete Waterfield in the ten-metre synchro at 3pm. If Louis

:02:42. > :02:46.Smith can cry like this when he's just made it into a final, imagine

:02:46. > :02:56.the reaction of the British men were to win eight gymnastics medal

:02:56. > :02:57.

:02:57. > :03:01.today. The team competition starts The groundsman at Wimbledon have

:03:01. > :03:04.had just 20 days instead of their usual year to turn those dusty,

:03:04. > :03:08.Brown baselines into the glorious green that we expect to see at

:03:08. > :03:12.Wimbledon. If you ask me, the groundsman deserve to have the

:03:12. > :03:14.first Olympic tennis medal of the Games. But as we all know, the

:03:14. > :03:18.Olympics will have a character and they don't come much colourful than

:03:18. > :03:24.Lleyton Hewitt. He thinks that he can win gold but he's got to get

:03:24. > :03:34.past the first round. So let's head out to wait very pink court. Andrew

:03:34. > :03:35.

:03:35. > :03:44.Castle and Tim Henman are waiting court Four for the Olympic tennis

:03:44. > :03:54.wearing coloured shirts, lots of adjustments made for this Olympic

:03:54. > :04:07.

:04:07. > :04:16.Bratislava, Stakhovsky. The son of two university lecturers in Kiev

:04:16. > :04:22.and. He knows how to play the game. He hasn't had a great year, he

:04:22. > :04:32.didn't win two rounds in a tournament until eight challenger,

:04:32. > :04:36.

:04:36. > :04:40.Hewitt before, but I'm sitting alongside a man who has, Tim Henman.

:04:40. > :04:50.What is it like to play against Lleyton Hewitt? For me, not much

:04:50. > :04:57.

:04:57. > :05:07.fun. I think we played nine times to do. -- so I could tell

:05:07. > :05:12.

:05:12. > :05:16.against Lleyton Hewitt, especially not when he's wearing the green and

:05:16. > :05:26.gold. He has put in some of the finest Davis Cup performances of

:05:26. > :05:36.

:05:36. > :05:41.start. It's an interesting match-up because you've got Lleyton Hewitt,

:05:41. > :05:44.who is the great returner, the great counterpuncher, and

:05:44. > :05:48.Stakhovsky, who is very much looking to take the net away. He's

:05:48. > :05:52.got a good first serve, he likes to move forward. If he's going to play

:05:52. > :05:57.that style of game against Lleyton Hewitt, he's going to have been

:05:57. > :05:59.very clean, keep his unforced error count low, he's going to have to

:05:59. > :06:02.keep his first serve percentage height. It will be interesting to

:06:02. > :06:07.see because he doesn't really have a great deal of confidence. He

:06:07. > :06:17.hasn't played his best tennis this year. His ranking down to 94,

:06:17. > :06:25.

:06:25. > :06:28.it isn't the biggest event the players play. But everybody has

:06:28. > :06:38.entered, everybody has prepared and everybody has been talking

:06:38. > :06:49.

:06:49. > :06:54.positively about tennis in the meat of this match, I should say it

:06:54. > :06:59.was part of the modern Olympiad from the word go, it was in the

:06:59. > :07:09.Olympic Games all the way until Paris in 24. This is the 14th of

:07:09. > :07:16.

:07:16. > :07:22.time this has been a medley event, I think it is fantastic how much

:07:22. > :07:26.momentum it has gained. In 1984 it was a test event, in 1988 it became

:07:26. > :07:30.an official Olympic event and in those years there were a few people

:07:30. > :07:40.that did not play, a few top players gave it a miss, but now

:07:40. > :07:43.

:07:43. > :07:47.Fiona Paterson not here is the defending gold medallist from

:07:48. > :07:54.Beijing, Rafa Nadal. -- the only one not here. He elected to pull

:07:54. > :07:59.out the week before. That will give him some rest ahead of the US Open,

:07:59. > :08:09.which is only a few weeks away. He has got his gold medal. But he is

:08:09. > :08:34.

:08:35. > :08:38.the only person missing from the You feel that when Stakhovski

:08:38. > :08:48.misses that first serve and they get into baseline exchanges, that

:08:48. > :09:11.

:09:11. > :09:21.is when things will play Intuit's He had to apologise twice for this!

:09:34. > :09:39.Double net cord. You should get two Roger Federer is in action on

:09:39. > :09:43.Centre Court in just a few minutes' time. That is against Julien

:09:43. > :09:50.Benneteau, who was two sets up against Federer at Wimbledon. No

:09:50. > :09:56.Andy Murray today, he won yesterday against Stanislav Wawrinka. Later

:09:56. > :10:01.on this court, Elena Baltacha will play. The long-time British No. 1.

:10:01. > :10:11.Down to number four at the moment, but she won her first round match.

:10:11. > :10:22.

:10:22. > :10:27.A 64 draw, rather than Wimbledon's 128. To win gold, six matches to

:10:27. > :10:37.win. There's a third and fourth place play-off for the bronze medal

:10:37. > :11:05.

:11:05. > :11:10.Lleyton Hewitt was out here late last night supporting Bernard Tomic,

:11:10. > :11:15.the Australian No. 1 who lost his match to Nishikori of Japan. Only

:11:15. > :11:25.one match played all day yesterday, badly affected by rain on the

:11:25. > :11:39.

:11:39. > :11:45.outside courts. Better conditions Greg Norman is with us, a former

:11:45. > :11:48.world number one golfer. He has won some majors before. Lleyton Hewitt

:11:48. > :11:58.has Cadee took for Greg Norman before at the Australian PGA one

:11:58. > :12:09.

:12:09. > :12:14.First break of serve for the man they affectionately called the

:12:14. > :12:21.mongrel. Well, Pat Rafter did once! You can say somebody is a mongrel

:12:21. > :12:25.with affection, can't you? You just did! Pat Rafter did. He is like a

:12:25. > :12:29.dog with a bone. You saw in some of those baseline exchanges, once he

:12:29. > :12:36.was able to get into the rally, he is putting Stakhovski under

:12:36. > :12:41.pressure. I think they had four baseline exchanges in that game and

:12:41. > :12:46.Hewitt won al four. That is his strategy. He is trying to get as

:12:46. > :12:49.many first serves back into play. He is looking to be more often sit

:12:49. > :12:55.on the second serve. One of the good science is that his movement

:12:55. > :13:00.looks better. He struggled with that having had two hit surgeries.

:13:00. > :13:06.His game relies so much on his speed. Surgery on his big toe as

:13:06. > :13:13.well. When he was 15 years old, he started. He has put himself under

:13:13. > :13:18.such strain. He qualified for the Australian Open in 1997 as a 15-

:13:18. > :13:27.year-old. He had a good win in the last round of qualities. Who did he

:13:27. > :13:37.beat? Mark Petchey? Or did Pengxi get him? Not shock, but he won

:13:37. > :13:45.

:13:45. > :13:53.Adderley -- allayed as a 16-year- Per when he won in 1998 as a 16-

:13:53. > :13:57.year-old, he beat Michael Chang. He also beat Andy Agassi. As a 16-

:13:57. > :14:07.year-old in front of home fans. You can understand what they got hot

:14:07. > :14:07.

:14:07. > :14:47.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:14:47. > :14:51.under the collar about that Down By it is going to be a very

:14:51. > :14:55.interesting if Lleyton Hewitt get stuck into this tournament. When he

:14:55. > :15:01.plays for his country, he just goes mad for it. Absolutely loves it.

:15:01. > :15:08.Todd Woodbridge on the right hand side, doubles gold and silver

:15:08. > :15:12.medallist. He is talking to Greg Norman. Todd Woodbridge won gold in

:15:12. > :15:21.the doubles with Woodford in 1996 when they beat a couple of duffers

:15:21. > :15:31.in the final. Tim Ward was unable to carry Tim Henman be more in the

:15:31. > :15:58.

:15:58. > :16:03.For a well-constructed point from Stakhovski. He came in on a very

:16:03. > :16:09.deep backhand volley. That is the type of Tennessee has to play to

:16:09. > :16:19.have an impact against Stewart. -- the type of tennis he had to play

:16:19. > :16:19.

:16:19. > :17:49.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:17:49. > :17:59.What a relief it would have been for Lleyton Hewitt to win some

:17:59. > :18:01.

:18:01. > :18:07.matches. There was at Rhode Island on grass. The one in Newport was

:18:07. > :18:11.pretty historic. He lost to John Isner in the final. He has only

:18:11. > :18:15.played six tournaments this year. He is woefully short of match

:18:15. > :18:25.practice coming in, but seems to be flowing very well around the court

:18:25. > :18:32.

:18:32. > :18:37.Stakhovski is on a pretty Brault -- poor run. After Wimbledon and

:18:37. > :18:43.Queen's Club, where he retired with injury, he lost in the first round

:18:43. > :18:53.pinched it cot and -- at, both on Claye. -- instant carte blanche dad,

:18:53. > :18:53.

:18:53. > :20:42.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:20:42. > :20:51.Not an easy shot, the deft half Roger Federer is the world number

:20:51. > :20:55.one and top seed. He won his first- round game in three sets. He has

:20:55. > :20:59.got history with that opponent, say he was pleased to come through that

:20:59. > :21:05.match. He now plays Benneteau, they are second on Centre Court today.

:21:05. > :21:14.Djokovic had a tough one on Court 1 yesterday. He beat Fellaini of

:21:14. > :21:19.Italy in three sets. He was a set down. Andy Murray beat Wawrinka 6-3,

:21:19. > :21:25.6-3, and now plays Jarkko Nieminen from Finland. He is expected to

:21:25. > :21:30.play Richard Gasquet after that. In his section, Tomas Berdych went out

:21:30. > :21:36.in the first round to Steve Darcis. Once you get to the medal winning

:21:36. > :21:44.stages, there will be some tremendous matches. Federer must be

:21:44. > :21:51.favourite. High I think so. He will obviously bring so much confidence

:21:51. > :21:54.to the court. He is so comfortable in the surroundings. Having got

:21:54. > :22:01.that 17th Grand Slam title under his belt, he has to feel pretty

:22:01. > :22:05.good about his chances for Olympic First round match at the Olympic

:22:05. > :22:15.tennis event, Lleyton Hewitt with a break of serve in his first round

:22:15. > :22:37.

:22:37. > :22:47.Did and miss by much, but could play from Hewitt. He's very

:22:47. > :23:09.

:23:09. > :23:19.Who did Lleyton Hewitt partnered the victory in Grand Slam doubles?

:23:19. > :23:19.

:23:19. > :24:48.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:24:48. > :24:58.That was the year that Safin beat That was a very nicely controlled

:24:58. > :24:58.

:24:58. > :25:45.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:25:45. > :25:55.You've got to Love Hewitt's Stakhovsky is one of the finest at

:25:55. > :25:55.

:25:55. > :28:29.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:28:29. > :28:39.He made up his mind pretty early he was going to have a go at the

:28:39. > :28:40.

:28:40. > :29:22.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:29:22. > :29:25.fourth and here. -- at the forehand Not an easy shot, the off backhand

:29:26. > :29:31.from the middle of the court, but you would really timing the ball

:29:31. > :29:41.fantastically well. -- but you would really timing the ball

:29:41. > :29:42.

:29:42. > :29:52.You've got to make sure you have a long, hard look at the court after

:29:52. > :29:52.

:29:52. > :30:49.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:30:49. > :30:55.Here is a question for you, what is best - to be bright when you are

:30:55. > :31:00.playing professional sport ought to be not so bright? Because

:31:00. > :31:05.Stakhovsky is a very bright man. Both his parents are university

:31:05. > :31:10.lecturers. Professors. He has a brother who has a doctor. You

:31:11. > :31:16.engage him in conversation, he is full of intellect and wit. Do you

:31:16. > :31:24.think that the life lends itself to that sort of person, or do you

:31:24. > :31:31.think it helps to be... Fake? most important aspect is you've got

:31:31. > :31:34.a clear understanding of your game style and the way you want to play.

:31:34. > :31:40.Whether you are intelligent or not or intellectual or not or

:31:40. > :31:43.streetwise or not. If you are going out on the road 36 to 40 weeks of

:31:43. > :31:48.the year, you are grinding it out, and some events like this are

:31:48. > :31:53.special, but does the actual lifestyle suits somebody who thinks

:31:53. > :32:03.a lot or a little? Everybody is different. Tipsarevic is a very

:32:03. > :32:16.

:32:16. > :32:20.deep thinker. He seems to be doing One thing that is a prerequisite is

:32:20. > :32:23.to love the game, and Lleyton Hewitt loves playing and competing.

:32:23. > :32:33.Federer is the same. Federer has already talked about the

:32:33. > :32:49.

:32:49. > :32:53.possibility of playing the next Any time you can call your job your

:32:53. > :33:03.hobby, you are probably going to be in a pretty good spot. That is the

:33:03. > :33:26.

:33:26. > :33:29.It's a really different atmosphere here than during the championships.

:33:29. > :33:33.A different sort of crowd, different people. People taking the

:33:33. > :33:43.opportunity to get in, where perhaps at the championships you

:33:43. > :33:43.

:33:43. > :34:31.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:34:31. > :34:35.We were told not to call it Henman So many aspects of Lleyton Hewitt's

:34:35. > :34:45.game to be impressed with. His ball-striking, really timing the

:34:45. > :34:45.

:34:45. > :35:54.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:35:54. > :36:04.ball well, getting into position He executed that particular place

:36:04. > :36:04.

:36:04. > :36:48.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:36:48. > :36:52.in the previous game. He thought Lleyton Hewitt it certainly having

:36:52. > :36:55.a happier time in his Olympic first round than he did in the first

:36:55. > :37:00.round of Wimbledon. If you want to see the rest of this match, you can

:37:00. > :37:03.continue watching it on lino on the red button. We have just heard in

:37:03. > :37:07.the last 10 minutes that the cauldron has been moved inside of

:37:07. > :37:11.the Olympic Stadium. We can see that it has moved from the centre

:37:11. > :37:16.of the Olympic Stadium to where Bradley Wiggins was ringing that

:37:16. > :37:26.Bell in the Opening Ceremony. That is where it will stay for the next

:37:26. > :37:33.

:37:33. > :37:36.Due for one member of the British three-day eventing team, it is on

:37:37. > :37:40.home turf. It is time for Zara Phillips and the rest of the

:37:40. > :37:50.British team to let off some steam as we go cross-country at Greenwich

:37:50. > :37:53.

:37:53. > :37:57.Park. The oldest part in London. -- Park. A beautiful setting.

:37:57. > :38:00.Traditionally the equestrian events have been held well away from the

:38:00. > :38:05.Olympic Park. Rishi Persad and Ian Stark have got their walking boots

:38:05. > :38:11.on for us and they will give us an idea of what lies in store for the

:38:11. > :38:16.horses at Greenwich Park. Key cross-country after two days of

:38:16. > :38:20.dressage. A word about the venue. We are looking down on the arena

:38:20. > :38:24.where the show jumping and dressage takes place. I remember in --

:38:24. > :38:29.remember the diving at Barcelona being one of the iconic images of

:38:29. > :38:34.the Olympics. I think this is more than enough competition for that.

:38:34. > :38:38.think it has to be. It is the most incredible setting. People walk in

:38:38. > :38:45.and can't believe it. Sitting on top of the hill by the Observer

:38:45. > :38:49.tree overlooking the city. What more could you want? The

:38:49. > :38:52.photographs will be for its spectacular. The fact we are up

:38:53. > :39:01.pate gives you an idea of what the horses will face. The hilly terrain

:39:01. > :39:04.will make this a test. I think so. The course is beautiful. Potential

:39:04. > :39:12.-- attention to beautiful -- attention to detail, the fences

:39:12. > :39:16.look beautiful. It is perfect. Some of the top riders walked the course

:39:16. > :39:22.and felt it was perhaps a little bit lacking in technical difficulty.

:39:22. > :39:26.But when you take into account the twists and turns, I think people

:39:26. > :39:33.will be struggling to get inside the time. That will create the

:39:33. > :39:38.difficulty. That time is 10 minutes, three seconds. Riders have to

:39:38. > :39:42.negotiate 28 obstacles. A lot of three-day eventing in the

:39:42. > :39:45.UK has been cancelled due to bad weather. Surely this can't have

:39:45. > :39:50.helped the preparations of the Great Britain team. Our showpiece

:39:50. > :39:56.event is badminton and that was cancelled because of the weather.

:39:56. > :40:00.It hasn't been the easiest lead-up to the Olympics for our team.

:40:00. > :40:04.wasn't. Badminton was a big blow. A week later it was Chatsworth and we

:40:04. > :40:08.thought that would be perfect for the potential team of riders

:40:08. > :40:11.because it is quite hilly and we would have similar terrain so it

:40:11. > :40:16.would give us an idea of what horses could cope, but that was

:40:16. > :40:20.also cancelled. But the riders have been very willing to go whether we

:40:20. > :40:25.have asked them. They are all desperate to get on the team. They

:40:25. > :40:29.do what they have to. Even though some major events were cancelled,

:40:29. > :40:34.they have been charging around the country to get some practice.

:40:34. > :40:39.the run-up to the Olympics, the British team have lost Peggy French

:40:39. > :40:42.after an injury to her horse, but Nicola Wilson is dubbed as the

:40:42. > :40:47.pathfinder for top tell us what that means and how we will play out

:40:47. > :40:52.in the team. For pathfinder will be first to go and will give the rest

:40:52. > :40:59.of the riders an idea of what they will encounter. And some advice on

:40:59. > :41:04.where they can use certain strategies. Nicola Wilson, for the

:41:04. > :41:08.last three years, has been the pathfinder for the team. The horse

:41:08. > :41:13.is probably the world's best cross- country horse. I don't want to jinx

:41:13. > :41:19.her! He is phenomenal across country. She normally goes up fast

:41:19. > :41:25.and clear. If she can do the time, people will have a go. If she can't

:41:25. > :41:29.do the time, the other riders will know how difficult it is. Our worry

:41:30. > :41:33.is that riders start chasing the clock and make stupid mistakes. But

:41:33. > :41:39.Nicola will come back Guillaume of the information we need. She will

:41:39. > :41:44.be first off and that is at 1:02pm. Hopefully there will be time for

:41:44. > :41:49.them all to get some understanding of the course. Hoping for a flying

:41:49. > :41:53.start. Great Britain currently in third. Is that what they expected?

:41:53. > :41:57.It might be better than what we were expecting. Being in third

:41:58. > :42:02.place at the moment. After the dressage, we were expecting to be

:42:02. > :42:06.off the lead. Germany are very strong in dressage. It is very

:42:06. > :42:09.tight at the top and I think we are much closer than we thought we

:42:09. > :42:14.would become at least to the Germans. We all fought the Germans

:42:14. > :42:20.would storm the lead in the dressage. We were only about 7 1/2

:42:20. > :42:24.points behind them. That is nothing, really. We are in a good position.

:42:24. > :42:30.It is pretty tight. There are six or seven teams at the top and any

:42:31. > :42:36.one of them could win gold. It makes it a great competition.

:42:36. > :42:44.Nicola is first off at 1:02pm. Zara Phillips does offer three-year six

:42:44. > :42:48.p and. The last rider, William Fox- Pitt, is due off at 5:14pm. By a

:42:48. > :42:56.with five partnerships involved in the team, Clare Balding has for

:42:56. > :43:01.about there are so many stories to If keep Britain wins the team gold

:43:01. > :43:05.for the third time in five attempts. 40 years ago in Munich, Great

:43:05. > :43:12.Britain won two gold medals in eventing for the team and for

:43:12. > :43:17.Richard need as an individual. In the subsequent years, it was a case

:43:17. > :43:21.of nearly but not quite, a string of civil medals until Athens and a

:43:21. > :43:25.delayed and controversial gold medals for Lesley Law. Fast forward

:43:25. > :43:29.to Beijing and Great Britain's won team and individual bronze. In

:43:29. > :43:32.London, they will be right back in the heart of things with the cross-

:43:32. > :43:35.country course in Greenwich and a group of five very talented

:43:35. > :43:45.individuals and their horses are determined to bring home team gold

:43:45. > :43:56.

:43:56. > :44:01.again. P this is the line-up. Mary You are all riding against each

:44:01. > :44:05.other, but you also riding for each other. How much can you do to help

:44:05. > :44:10.other members of the team? For we have to produce personal bests, but

:44:10. > :44:15.at the same time it is important that our team mates go well. If you

:44:15. > :44:19.see something, none of us hold back. It will just come out. We are

:44:19. > :44:24.always bouncing ideas off each other. This is your six Olympic

:44:24. > :44:30.Games. By can't believe it. Barcelona 20 years ago, it doesn't

:44:30. > :44:36.seem 20 years. I love it. I'm still really keen and eager. I'm dying to

:44:36. > :44:38.be even more successful. Does it still make you nervous? Yes. It is

:44:38. > :44:43.apprehension, the wary of let -- making a mistake and letting

:44:43. > :44:47.everybody down. You were the latest call up because greedy French was

:44:47. > :44:53.originally selected and Vinci at two pull-out because her horse was

:44:53. > :44:57.lame. What was your feeling? could not have been more unhappy,

:44:57. > :45:04.really. That sounds strange because this is a chance of a lifetime. PD

:45:04. > :45:08.has become a very close friend. It is very, very sad. So many people

:45:08. > :45:15.are supportive of you, but they adore opposition bars. He has his

:45:15. > :45:19.own fan club. He is such a character, he loves it. I am so

:45:19. > :45:26.pleased that we've now been given this opportunity. You came out of

:45:26. > :45:31.Beijing with so many honours. Does it give you more confidence?

:45:31. > :45:35.don't know if I came out like that! It does give you massive confidence

:45:35. > :45:39.and the fact I was able to pull out that result on a horse I had no

:45:39. > :45:44.idea if he was going to cope with the atmosphere, it gave me more

:45:44. > :45:49.drive to be going for London. you, it has been a traumatic ride.

:45:49. > :45:54.What happened a year ago? This time last year the horse was very ill

:45:54. > :45:58.and the vets said he could die overnight. The Olympics could not

:45:58. > :46:04.have been any further because he was my any chance to get here. He

:46:04. > :46:10.is a miracle. For you it has been a case of building a new relationship

:46:10. > :46:14.with the new horse. Toytown got injured before Beijing. I had a

:46:14. > :46:20.great relationship with him, I had some huge successes and he was the

:46:20. > :46:25.horse of a lifetime. Piat had this one since he was five. -- I've had.

:46:25. > :46:30.He is quick and nippy. We've had long enough to get to know each

:46:30. > :46:37.other. In terms of your experience of riding in World Championship

:46:37. > :46:42.teams, European teams, Olympic teams, how could a team is this?

:46:42. > :46:48.That is the meanest question of the afternoon! I believe we have a very

:46:48. > :46:55.strong team. Core we are hoping the cross country will be difficult

:46:55. > :47:05.enough. We are praying we can do better than that in London in front

:47:05. > :47:06.

:47:06. > :47:10.What a wonderful insight that was. Everything you would want in a team,

:47:10. > :47:14.all of the characters. This is the second stage of the competition,

:47:14. > :47:18.the dressage took place over the last two days and this is how the

:47:18. > :47:23.British team got on. On day one of the eventing dressage,

:47:23. > :47:32.the first British rider to take to the arena was Nicola Wilson,

:47:32. > :47:38.recording a score of 51.7. That is a good start. This lovely Yorkshire

:47:38. > :47:43.girl, a great favourite. Such a bubbly character and this

:47:43. > :47:50.combination is something to behold. Next to ride for Team GB was the

:47:50. > :47:57.six-time Olympian Mary King. Her impressive round of 14.9 securing

:47:57. > :48:04.Great Britain the bronze medal position overnight. -- 14.9. The

:48:04. > :48:10.51-year-old paid tribute to her supporters. It is absolutely

:48:10. > :48:14.fantastic. I am quite tearful! To have the home crowd behind you and

:48:14. > :48:20.they are brilliant. When I came in, they were amazing how they kept

:48:20. > :48:27.quiet. They were dying to clap! They all responded to what I asked.

:48:27. > :48:31.Thrilled to bits. I am not usually tearful! On day two, it was the

:48:31. > :48:35.turn of the remaining three team members to compete. First up was

:48:35. > :48:42.Olympic debutant Zara Phillips. Love fully extended canter --

:48:42. > :48:46.canter. Very well balanced. Cheered on by her family and the packed out

:48:46. > :48:52.stance, she produced a solid performance, recording a score of

:48:52. > :48:56.46.1. As the weather took a turn for the worse, Tina Cook had more

:48:56. > :49:02.than nerves to contend with, but she did not let the conditions rain

:49:02. > :49:10.on her parade. She racked up an impressive score of 42. The last

:49:10. > :49:13.British rider to compete was well number-one William Fox-Pitt. His

:49:13. > :49:23.44.1 ensuring Team GB maintained the bronze medal position going

:49:23. > :49:23.

:49:23. > :49:31.into day three. So after the first phase of the competition, the

:49:31. > :49:41.In the individual competition, the surprise leader is the Japanese

:49:41. > :49:45.

:49:45. > :49:49.With the British riders currently lying in 12th, 14th, 17th, 24th and

:49:49. > :49:54.39th position overall, we are all set for an exciting cross-country

:49:54. > :50:00.competition today. Indeed we are. Before we crossover

:50:00. > :50:05.to Greenwich Park, we've had some cycling used. Fading can Schiller

:50:05. > :50:09.has been passed fit to defend his Olympic time-trial title on

:50:09. > :50:15.Wednesday. He crushed up badly in the men's road race, injuring his

:50:15. > :50:20.shoulder. -- crashed out badly. But we've heard from the Swiss Olympic

:50:20. > :50:25.Association and they say he will be on the finish line. Bradley Wiggins

:50:25. > :50:30.starts as favourite. As we've heard from William Fox-Pitt, Great

:50:30. > :50:40.Britain are relying on the cross- country stage to give them the edge.

:50:40. > :50:44.

:50:44. > :50:47.I'm delighted to say that we have a nice cool breeze. Ideal for the

:50:47. > :50:57.horses and the first horse and rider for the United States of

:50:57. > :51:02.America. They will be counted down very shortly. It is Boyd Martin, on

:51:02. > :51:08.Australian who relocated to the USA in 2007. He is an integral part of

:51:08. > :51:12.what is a very strong American team. They might be down the order at the

:51:12. > :51:19.moment, but they are still very much in touch. You can certainly

:51:19. > :51:24.say that anyone out of the top eight nations, although they might

:51:24. > :51:29.be a little disappointed to be in 8th place, the team are not out of

:51:29. > :51:33.the hunt in any way, shape or form, the Americans. I would not be too

:51:33. > :51:41.disappointed about being in 8th place. It is so tight at the top.

:51:41. > :51:51.Anything can happen on this course. It will be all about the time. And

:51:51. > :52:01.

:52:01. > :52:10.trying not to make silly mistakes. jumping stallions in the world. He

:52:10. > :52:15.is a horse that has already been very successful. Away he goes. 5728

:52:15. > :52:20.metres. Look at this course because it is beautifully made, beautifully

:52:20. > :52:30.presented. A chance to get going quite quickly. A combination coming

:52:30. > :52:43.

:52:43. > :52:48.strict board. The -- first fence. That Forest questing here, he is

:52:48. > :52:56.taking the inside line. He makes nothing of it. I do not think they

:52:56. > :53:01.will all be as plain sailing as he made it look. We had several very

:53:01. > :53:05.professional and very capable riders getting a way only. That

:53:05. > :53:10.will give a to a very good indication. Not just how the fences

:53:10. > :53:17.will jump but how difficult the time will be to get no penalty

:53:17. > :53:23.points. 10.03 minutes, to get inside that client without any time

:53:23. > :53:33.penalties. The privet hedging is built into

:53:33. > :53:35.

:53:35. > :53:45.that dents. Next, areas routes into this combination, it will be

:53:45. > :53:49.

:53:49. > :53:59.interesting to see what the There are lots of different options,

:53:59. > :54:04.

:54:04. > :54:14.we will see them as the day towards the the victory with the

:54:14. > :54:14.

:54:14. > :56:45.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:56:45. > :56:48.gathering crowd in the arena. They are round the course with the

:56:48. > :56:54.stands acting as a wonderful viewing point as well with the

:56:54. > :57:02.screen, too. My word. He nearly overcooked that. He was going so

:57:02. > :57:06.fast there was not sure that he was going to make the turn. -- I was

:57:06. > :57:11.not sure. Riders have got to take these risks to be inside the time,

:57:11. > :57:18.I think. He is coming to the second water behind the grandstands. That

:57:18. > :57:27.will be a very good check time. Christopher Burton coming to the

:57:27. > :57:37.third. In fact he is farther round the course than that. Fence five, I

:57:37. > :57:47.

:57:47. > :57:57.make nothing of that. It will be interesting to see Boyd Martin on

:57:57. > :58:06.

:58:06. > :58:15.through the water, which is a crucial fence on this course. He is

:58:15. > :58:20.now on that serious climb up to the Greenwich fence. Big drop here. He

:58:20. > :58:30.needs to be well up on the clock. He managed that drop so easily.

:58:30. > :58:33.These days the riders train for those narrow fences. He will be an

:58:33. > :58:40.interesting indicator of the time on the course. He did not waste any

:58:40. > :58:44.time and he is still galloping strongly. The Australian,

:58:44. > :58:48.Christopher Burton, very experienced and going very well. He

:58:48. > :58:58.is not travelling at the same pace as the American, Boyd Martin, by

:58:58. > :59:01.

:59:01. > :59:05.Martin was going much faster than this but it is always deceptive. He

:59:05. > :59:11.is wasting more time setting up for the fences but he is a thoroughbred

:59:11. > :59:15.horse, and he has probably got a good turn of speed and a big stride.

:59:15. > :59:23.Plenty of fuel in the tank towards the end could make it up. That is

:59:23. > :59:33.the interesting part. Eight fences in four minutes. 20 fences in the

:59:33. > :00:00.

:00:00. > :00:07.course before, a very experienced corner and any strong horse will

:00:07. > :00:17.waste time preparing for the turns. Still not the same time as Boyd

:00:17. > :00:22.

:00:22. > :00:32.will go down that in three. The second part is so narrow that it is

:00:32. > :00:36.

:00:36. > :00:39.easy to gallop past it. I think Australia for the first time in

:00:39. > :00:43.Kentucky in the World Championships. He has been based in England for

:00:43. > :00:48.more than a year and he is showing what he can do. He is quickening up

:00:48. > :00:52.now. He was much faster through that combination. He had a much

:00:52. > :01:02.better line than Boyd Martin and he took a stride extra by going too

:01:02. > :01:11.

:01:11. > :01:21.first on the course. He is over the time fence. All the nations

:01:21. > :01:27.

:01:27. > :01:37.represented here. Now he is going round to the Observer to return. --

:01:37. > :01:44.

:01:44. > :01:53.the observatory. I wonder what his time is? Certainly not going so

:01:53. > :01:57.quickly and the horse looking a bit tired. He jumped that on exactly

:01:57. > :02:05.the line that his plan, three strides. The horse is beginning to

:02:05. > :02:09.look a bit tired. And this is France, who have been disappointing

:02:09. > :02:16.after dressage in 9th place. They are going to have to have three

:02:16. > :02:20.good clear rounds to get them back in it. Even so, the French, only a

:02:20. > :02:30.matter of 20 marks behind the leaders. And they do ride very fast

:02:30. > :02:40.across the country. They sometimes throw caution to the wind. He tried

:02:40. > :02:42.

:02:42. > :02:50.to get the angle and he runs out! The first penalty on the court. --

:02:50. > :03:00.course. 20 penalties at the third for France. And this is the

:03:00. > :03:01.

:03:01. > :03:07.American, Boyd Martin. 10 minutes 11.74. 3.6 time, which is very

:03:07. > :03:12.interesting. This course would look to me in the very early stages that

:03:12. > :03:16.not many will be inside the time. do not think many will go faster

:03:16. > :03:20.than Boyd Martin. It is a question of who dares go round the turns

:03:20. > :03:26.more quickly and down the hills faster. Any horse that has stamina

:03:26. > :03:36.at the end to go down the course. Boyd Martin's horse was tiring at

:03:36. > :03:42.

:03:42. > :03:52.the end, so we may have lost time for each team when they come back

:03:52. > :03:52.

:03:52. > :04:00.and pass on the words of the right to know exactly how it is ridden. -

:04:00. > :04:10.- the words of the ride. That was an unfortunate stop at fence three

:04:10. > :04:18.for Dennis. He did not quite have his horse facing on to the right

:04:18. > :04:26.line. And away we go with her new starter, the first for Germany,

:04:26. > :04:36.Peter Thomsen. He was in a gold medal team for Germany in Hong Kong.

:04:36. > :04:37.

:04:37. > :04:47.The German team are leading on 11 9.10. He will be an extremely good

:04:47. > :04:48.

:04:48. > :04:51.indicator of the Germans and the rest of the teams and individuals.

:04:51. > :04:55.The important thing is, yes, they want to go round as quickly as

:04:55. > :05:05.possible, but they want to bring back information for the others. It

:05:05. > :05:14.

:05:14. > :05:22.is not the be-all and end-all that Australia. Interestingly, he set

:05:22. > :05:29.out much slower than Boyd Martin. He did not get around in 11, he was

:05:29. > :05:35.eight seconds over. Beautifully through the second to last,

:05:35. > :05:38.checking the clock. This looks to me to be much better. He has judged

:05:38. > :05:47.it, built up his speed, and made time over the latter part of the

:05:47. > :05:49.course. To you agree? -- do you agree? Yes, and he is a

:05:49. > :05:59.thoroughbred horse so he has not tired and he could make the time

:05:59. > :06:01.

:06:01. > :06:11.rather easily. He is well inside the time! He stays on his dressage

:06:11. > :06:13.

:06:13. > :06:18.score. The dressage score for Australia was 46.1. I sort of feel

:06:18. > :06:26.disappointed that he made that time so easily, but on the other hand,

:06:26. > :06:30.he is an experienced rider. And a very fast horse. I am not too sure

:06:30. > :06:34.that we will see that many inside the time. Before the day started I

:06:34. > :06:41.was not sure that anybody would, but there we go, the second horse

:06:41. > :06:51.out. Boyd Martin looked to be in a hurry all the way and not making it.

:06:51. > :06:56.

:06:56. > :07:06.He obviously was not covering the but he has that only 20 that he

:07:06. > :07:11.

:07:11. > :07:18.medal team. If you are in the winning team, you still get a medal,

:07:18. > :07:23.even if you are not part of the winning score. The market place

:07:23. > :07:33.looks like a gymnastic exercise. does. The riders are not taking it

:07:33. > :07:59.

:07:59. > :08:06.too seriously and the horses are the bottom of a steep hill and

:08:06. > :08:16.sharp turn. Waiting in the box is Michael Ryan for Ireland. Ireland

:08:16. > :08:30.

:08:30. > :08:40.are in 10th place at the moment. Sue Benson, the course designer.

:08:40. > :08:47.

:08:47. > :08:57.Peter Thomsen coming into the arena, Jo May have got a rider very

:08:57. > :09:02.

:09:02. > :09:08.experienced at cross-country. -- the horse helped him out! He took a

:09:08. > :09:11.stride out. Previous horses have gone on four. He realised it was a

:09:11. > :09:21.long way off and kicked for it but the horse made it even though it

:09:21. > :09:26.was scary. Peter Thomsen 13 seconds behind Christopher Burton who has

:09:26. > :09:34.gone inside the time. This is Denis Mesples for France now. Coming

:09:34. > :09:44.towards the end of the course. All of the riders getting huge support

:09:44. > :09:57.

:09:57. > :09:59.second quarter, up the steep climb. -- second water. Quite a

:09:59. > :10:09.straightforward fence towards the steep climb and now he starts,

:10:09. > :10:12.

:10:12. > :10:21.got the stamina or not if they can gallop up this hill, get down the

:10:21. > :10:30.big drop and then recover. Did talk about it in human terms, they could

:10:30. > :10:33.be jelly elect. -- they could have jelly legs. Yes, they could

:10:33. > :10:40.collapse in a heap! But actually they are all making pretty light

:10:40. > :10:48.work of it. This is the French one coming home, Denis Mesples. 49

:10:48. > :10:57.years old. He is already well over the time and remember he has got 20

:10:57. > :11:03.jumping penalties in that. His time penalties are clocking up as well.

:11:03. > :11:08.0.4 of a penalty for every second over 10.03. He will be almost one

:11:08. > :11:13.minute over the time. He does not seem into much of a hurry either.

:11:13. > :11:18.He is not chasing the latter part. I think the horse has looked quite

:11:18. > :11:26.tired. He was not very high through that brush fence. I think the horse

:11:26. > :11:35.will be relieved that the finish is in sight. Over a minute. Yes, 46

:11:35. > :11:40.penalties to add 4 Denis Mesples. 61.5 after the dressage. This is

:11:40. > :11:44.the Irish rider, Michael Ryan, very experienced. Never been to an

:11:44. > :11:54.Olympic Games before, but he has done several championships and

:11:54. > :12:00.

:12:00. > :12:08.Europeans. He went to the World because he did not hurry there was

:12:08. > :12:18.down that hill and he did not waste any time either. -- he did not

:12:18. > :12:27.

:12:27. > :12:32.hurry the horse. At now Canada. -- despite their silver medal at the

:12:33. > :12:42.worlds. In 11th place, but not that many miles behind if the cross

:12:43. > :12:51.

:12:51. > :12:58.thought to be one of the influential fences and it is the

:12:58. > :13:06.first time we have seen it. It comes in the last leg of the cause.

:13:06. > :13:09.-- the course. Michael Ryan jumped the two fences in the arena very

:13:09. > :13:15.well and the crowd beginning to realise they have got a very good

:13:15. > :13:20.vantage point. Lots of cheering. 20 seconds slower than Burton. He ran

:13:20. > :13:25.inside the time, so that gives a good indication. Christopher

:13:25. > :13:29.Burton's round was so well judged for Australia. But he is a class

:13:29. > :13:37.rider. He is not very well known over here yet, but he is winning

:13:37. > :13:40.all the time on the circuit. As I said earlier, I don't think we can

:13:40. > :13:50.take it for granted that lots of them will go inside the time that

:13:50. > :14:11.

:14:11. > :14:20.going to make it, I don't think. The Germans have only got the lead

:14:20. > :14:30.over Australia of just under three points. The penalty points are

:14:30. > :14:41.

:14:41. > :14:45.clocking up. That was the last. He fastest riders for Germany. He has

:14:45. > :14:55.always been a very good cross- country rider. A very good judge of

:14:55. > :15:18.

:15:18. > :15:27.pace and that will be the secret many on this course. 48 years old.

:15:27. > :15:37.She has competed a lot in Lexington. Just coming to the ancient

:15:37. > :15:40.

:15:40. > :15:46.marketplace. Incorrect fence. is Michael Ryan in the beautifully

:15:46. > :15:56.laid-out gardens. A beautiful part of the park. You can see crowds all

:15:56. > :15:56.

:15:56. > :16:02.the way around. Huge support for the various teams. Now it is

:16:02. > :16:09.Michelle Miller on and a stabbed. A sharp turn left and cunning defence

:16:09. > :16:16.No. 13. She is going downhill very slowly. She is going to be way over

:16:16. > :16:25.the time. Experience and judgment of pace will be two grip of the

:16:25. > :16:35.crucial factors. Michelle jumping fences well, but not in a big hurry.

:16:35. > :16:55.

:16:55. > :16:59.sensible pace, not flat out, but opening out the horse. A little bit

:16:59. > :17:07.of light into dark, but there's plenty of chance to adjust to the

:17:07. > :17:11.bright sunlight on his all-weather arena. Hanging a little bit. It is

:17:11. > :17:21.great when they come into the Syrian and hear the crowds cheering.

:17:21. > :17:25.

:17:25. > :17:31.Big is the riders such a buzz. penalty points. That was a silly

:17:31. > :17:34.mistake. She jumped the first brush a little bit left to right and

:17:34. > :17:39.drifted out wide and didn't make a quick enough decision to make the

:17:39. > :17:45.turn. Judgment of pace also important? Yes, she would have got

:17:45. > :17:50.away with it if she had been quicker in her reactions. The horse

:17:50. > :18:00.did not totally help Iraq, but he was not given much incentive. --

:18:00. > :18:06.

:18:06. > :18:13.helper out. Michael Ryan, second to disappointment. Michael is very

:18:13. > :18:21.experienced. For a horse was just a little weary, I suspect. There

:18:21. > :18:26.wasn't a great stride can do think he waited for another one. It

:18:26. > :18:30.wasn't there and the horse was running out of power. The horse

:18:30. > :18:36.doesn't look that tired. He looks like he still has plenty of running

:18:36. > :18:43.in him. He will be sick. Certainly will. That is a disappointing start

:18:43. > :18:52.for Ireland. It means that the next four riders for Ireland have... At

:18:52. > :18:58.least three of them have to get round. Wasn't one of their county

:18:58. > :19:04.combinations after dressage, but it doesn't give you confidence when

:19:04. > :19:08.your first rider doesn't get home. This is the crucial Pole on the

:19:08. > :19:18.course. She is not really pushing. She will be conserving energy, but

:19:18. > :19:19.

:19:19. > :19:24.she is losing time. 20 in the arena. They really are making that look

:19:24. > :19:27.ridiculously easy. What was interesting with Michelle is that

:19:27. > :19:33.her horse is so full of running because he has gone quite slowly.

:19:33. > :19:41.He landed and accelerated. The rest are landing a little bit weary and

:19:41. > :19:45.then they recover afterwards. the first for Japan. Japan did show

:19:45. > :19:55.what they were capable of and surprised everyone in the dressage

:19:55. > :20:04.

:20:04. > :20:10.is relatively inexperienced compared to a lot of the horses and

:20:10. > :20:13.combinations we have seen. But the Japanese have spent a lot of time

:20:13. > :20:17.training with some professional set-ups and they have really

:20:17. > :20:27.pleased everyone with their efforts so far. Will they succeed cross-
