:00:26. > :00:29.Good morning. As you've been hearing, it was a gold rush for

:00:29. > :00:39.Great Britain yesterday, who are now sitting pretty in fifth on the

:00:39. > :00:42.

:00:42. > :00:51.medal table. There is plenty to After three Olympic silvers, could

:00:51. > :00:56.today be gold? Also three other of rowing finals at Eton Dorney,

:00:56. > :01:01.including Northern Ireland's Alan Campbell, hoping to grab a medal in

:01:01. > :01:04.the men's singles sculls. The athletics begins today, and we get

:01:04. > :01:10.our first glimpse of Jess Ennis on the track as the heptathlon starts

:01:10. > :01:15.in just over an hour's time. And Larry Godfrey is shooting for not

:01:15. > :01:23.remembered today. A tough last 16 encounter awaits against Malaysia's

:01:23. > :01:27.world number five. That is starting right now, so let's go to Lord's to

:01:27. > :01:34.see Great Britain's sole survivor in artery. Larry Godfrey is the

:01:34. > :01:44.world number 10, from Bristol. He is facing Malaysia's Khairul Anuar

:04:37. > :04:45.points. He is world ranked number five. He has been a serious

:04:45. > :04:51.competitor on the world circuit for year. -- all year. Their styles are

:04:51. > :04:57.incredibly different. Khairul Anuar Mohamad's is very relaxed, good

:04:57. > :05:01.timing. Larry is very powerful. Which means for him his timing

:05:01. > :05:06.isn't crucial because it can really hold his form together, but the

:05:06. > :05:10.better timing that we see Larry using, as in the timing it takes

:05:10. > :05:20.from the string to touch his face to release the more consistent, the

:05:20. > :05:27.

:05:27. > :05:32.better Larry is going to be away from the sun. Khairul Anuar

:05:32. > :05:42.Mohamad looks into the sun. But the sun is not out, it's not a factor

:07:48. > :07:54.

:08:01. > :08:06.international football stadium, 10 red London buses. It is a long,

:08:06. > :08:12.long wait. I know it doesn't look that far on your TV set. They are

:08:12. > :08:22.shooting at A 10, which has 12.2 centimetres in diameter, a little

:10:15. > :10:23.confirmation from the target end. Fantastic consistent shooting from

:10:23. > :10:28.both of these Archers. Larry came fourth in the ranking event. The

:10:28. > :10:34.only people to beat him were the three Korean men. Korea dominate

:10:34. > :10:44.the sport of archery. He scored a huge 680 points, just one below the

:10:44. > :10:45.

:10:45. > :10:55.British record, compared to Cairo Ammar Mohammad -- Khairul Anuar

:10:55. > :10:55.

:13:10. > :13:15.Anuar Mohamad has to win the fifth set and then we go into the very

:13:16. > :13:25.tense one arrow to shoot off. The women's final was decided, the gold

:13:43. > :13:47.had two seconds left on the clock when he released. Archer's only

:13:47. > :13:51.have 20 seconds to draw up and execute their shot, which seems

:13:51. > :13:56.plenty of time, but I noticed the wind had started to swirl when he

:13:56. > :14:06.was on the line. You've got to be lucky. One little gust of wind and

:14:06. > :14:06.

:14:06. > :15:37.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 91 seconds

:15:37. > :15:43.has gone down as an eight with an doesn't matter if Khairul Anuar

:15:43. > :15:53.Mohamad, he has already taken the two points. Five set points off.

:15:53. > :16:02.

:16:02. > :16:07.And we have it, first thing in the competitors are really high-class

:16:07. > :16:17.shooters. Carol and one Mohammed is the current Asian champion in the

:16:17. > :16:18.

:16:18. > :16:22.individual and team event. -- Khairul Anuar Mohamad. Larry really

:16:22. > :16:32.needs to get his a role in the 10th. Sometimes we found out that is not

:16:32. > :16:53.

:16:53. > :17:00.good enough, it really has to be at archers hangs on one arrow. Those

:17:00. > :17:10.targets will be replaced. If they have to go for the ruler, they have

:17:10. > :17:10.

:17:10. > :18:15.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 91 seconds

:18:15. > :18:25.to run the ruler over an unruffled through to the quarter-finals, and

:18:25. > :18:32.

:18:32. > :18:42.Britain's last archer left in the a full house, 5,000 spectators here,

:18:42. > :18:44.

:18:44. > :18:48.in front of the pavilion at Lord's, Mohamad, issued that 10 in this

:18:48. > :18:55.stadium, in front of the home crowd was really incredible, so well done

:18:55. > :18:58.indeed, Mohamad. Larry, of course, he will be disappointed not to go

:18:59. > :19:04.through, but he should be proud of the game that he brought to the

:19:04. > :19:08.stadium today. He shot well, good timing, we are really proud of you,

:19:09. > :19:14.Larry, thank you for representing the country. 15 arrows were not

:19:14. > :19:18.enough, the 16th was everything. It hit the gold, but he knew at that

:19:18. > :19:28.the one arrow that counted it was not going to be enough, the nine

:19:28. > :19:32.

:19:32. > :19:36.was beaten by this 10. Mohamad goes Just one arrow made the difference

:19:36. > :19:46.between being emanated all staying in the competition, malacia goes

:19:46. > :19:50.through. -- Malaysia. He was the last surviving British athlete in

:19:50. > :19:55.the artery competition, and Larry Godfrey is with Sonali Shah. Tough

:19:55. > :20:00.luck, all down to one arrow in the end. That is what archery is about!

:20:00. > :20:03.I woke up this morning feeling good, the same as I did on Monday, I went

:20:03. > :20:11.out and did my best with the feeling that if it was met Bibi, it

:20:11. > :20:18.was meant to be. It was close. was your toughest match on paper.

:20:18. > :20:21.Yeah, all the Archers are of a great standard, so what can you do?

:20:22. > :20:25.You have really loved the crowd here, you have been entertaining

:20:25. > :20:30.them not just for the shooting, with your antics, the imitation

:20:30. > :20:36.cover-drive. Do you know, this is the best arena I have ever shot in.

:20:36. > :20:42.The lanes only come round once every four years, it is fun, the

:20:42. > :20:46.crowd have been great. -- the Olympics. It is a great atmosphere,

:20:46. > :20:51.I am really happy and thankful for all the public to get behind me,

:20:51. > :20:56.you know. Your third Olympic Games, not the result he would have wanted,

:20:56. > :20:59.but does it rate right at there? Definitely, archery is a funny

:20:59. > :21:05.sport, you have got to believe that you can win it, but anything can

:21:05. > :21:10.happen. I took it down to one arrow and he smashed it, didn't he?

:21:11. > :21:17.certainly enjoyed watching you, thank you. Larry Godfrey, who said

:21:17. > :21:22.artery is a funny spot, a dramatic way to start today. -- archery.

:21:22. > :21:25.Great Britain are out, but the medals matches will be taking place

:21:25. > :21:30.at 3:20pm this afternoon. Plenty more on offer this morning, live

:21:30. > :21:35.sport including badminton at Wembley, that is on BBC Three,

:21:35. > :21:38.Indonesia against Denmark in the mixed doubles bronze medal matches.

:21:39. > :21:48.Meanwhile, down to the last 16 in a beach volleyball, disappoint but

:21:49. > :21:49.

:21:49. > :21:54.yesterday Paul Great Britain, but a Later on we will have all the

:21:54. > :21:57.build-up to at athletics that is going to be starting in the stadium,

:21:57. > :22:00.the Olympic Stadium behind me. Also we are going to be showing you the

:22:00. > :22:06.build-up to the rowing finals and hearing from Katherine Grainger,

:22:06. > :22:09.but today it is the first sporting action inside the stadium, because

:22:09. > :22:12.the athletics will start, and right at the beginning of the schedule is

:22:12. > :22:19.the heptathlon, the gruelling women's events which will take

:22:19. > :22:23.place over the next two days. The star attraction is the one Jessica

:22:23. > :22:33.Ennis, so can the poster girl for London 2012 deliver on the bigger

:22:33. > :22:50.

:22:50. > :22:54.What is it like being one of the faces of the Games? Yeah, it is

:22:54. > :22:59.definitely a unique experience. It has been a man here, but really

:22:59. > :23:03.exciting, and it is just crazy, seeing all the campaigns, the

:23:03. > :23:07.things that have been up around the country and in London, but I feel

:23:07. > :23:10.very privileged to be part of the home games in a big way, and I just

:23:10. > :23:16.want to make sure I perform and have a great couple of days out on

:23:16. > :23:20.the track. With privilege comes pressure. For me personally, it is

:23:20. > :23:25.nice pressure. I have said before that it is not so much, I don't

:23:25. > :23:28.know, the negativity that you feel, you feel the positive side of it,

:23:28. > :23:32.people supporting you, everyone is going to be cheering for you and

:23:32. > :23:36.wishing for you to do well. Having the crowd behind you in the stadium

:23:36. > :23:42.really lifts you, so it is a massive advantage for the GB

:23:42. > :23:48.athletes. The girl from the city of steel came to Berlin hunting for

:23:48. > :23:55.gold, and she has done it! He won the world title in Berlin, and

:23:55. > :23:58.there was a peeling that people were putting the London 2012 medal

:23:58. > :24:03.around your neck three years out. Yes! Just one sub-par showing with

:24:03. > :24:10.the Javelin last year and she lost the world title to that Anna Church

:24:10. > :24:15.ever. I think that it changed the way that people look at heptathlon,

:24:15. > :24:19.how difficult it is going to be. Things happen for a reason, you

:24:19. > :24:24.have got to look at the events in that way, and Daegu, although I

:24:24. > :24:29.really wanted to win, I came out on top, in a way it was a blessing in

:24:29. > :24:32.disguise, and it gave me the fuel in my stomach to really keep

:24:32. > :24:37.driving hard and make sure that everything is in the right place

:24:37. > :24:39.for London. Last year, I came away really frustrated with Javelin,

:24:40. > :24:44.knowing that I needed to make some changes in that event, so being

:24:44. > :24:50.able to go back to Sheffield and work with Michel and address those

:24:50. > :24:53.problems, and then come out knowing that I need to get a good throw in

:24:53. > :24:57.to prove to myself and two other people that it is not a major

:24:57. > :25:01.problem, throwing 47 was a brilliant start, so I was really

:25:01. > :25:11.pleased at that. I'm glad I have been able to work on it to make a

:25:11. > :25:12.

:25:12. > :25:18.lot stronger this year. She beat her rivals with a new record four

:25:18. > :25:22.years after a serious foot injury cruel to her -- cruelly robbed her

:25:22. > :25:26.in Beijing. It has been such a long build up, and I know more than

:25:26. > :25:29.anyone that things can go wrong, with what happened in 2008 before

:25:30. > :25:34.Beijing, and I just want to make sure that every session goes right

:25:34. > :25:38.and that there are no major problems. To actually be here now,

:25:38. > :25:42.in the position that I am in, healthy, looking forward to it, I

:25:42. > :25:46.feel really privilege, and I cannot believe how difficult -- different

:25:46. > :25:53.it is four years down the line. Olympic history beckons. Kelly

:25:53. > :25:59.Sotherton was our last heptathlon medallist in 2004. Four years

:25:59. > :26:07.earlier, Denise Lewis heroically hobbled to gold. And in 1972, there

:26:07. > :26:10.was Mary. Come on, Mary, you need the run of your life! Peters, the

:26:10. > :26:15.Northern Irish treasure. Now it is for Jessica Ennis to further enrich

:26:15. > :26:21.this tradition, and she is first up. It is nice to be on at the

:26:21. > :26:24.beginning, we fly in a few days before, so it is nice to get it out

:26:24. > :26:29.of the way and then support the team and enjoy watching everybody

:26:29. > :26:34.else compete. I hope to go out on Friday and put some good

:26:34. > :26:39.performances down and see what I can do. Is it one of those things

:26:39. > :26:44.that he will only appreciate after the events? Yeah, I think so,

:26:44. > :26:47.because it is such a busy leader, there is a lot going on, the nerves

:26:47. > :26:53.and adrenalin and everything kicks in. -- lead-up. Definitely after

:26:53. > :26:56.that will be the time you look back and realise how big it was, you

:26:56. > :27:02.know, you go back and see how you felt. It will be amazing to look

:27:02. > :27:09.back on. How amazing Major's depend on the colour of Jessica's medal.

:27:09. > :27:14.Bath made just a pen. Whatever happens, it will be the intense

:27:14. > :27:18.couple of days. In Sydney, the poster girl for the heptathlon was

:27:18. > :27:21.Denise Lewis, who is here with me now. How do you think that Jess

:27:21. > :27:25.Ennis is going to cope with the expectation that is on her this

:27:25. > :27:31.time? I think she will cope very well, I really do. In the lead-up,

:27:31. > :27:34.there has been so much attention on her, which she has taken in her

:27:34. > :27:38.stride, because at the end of the day she is profiling herself,

:27:38. > :27:43.profiling the event, but when it comes down to what will happen in

:27:43. > :27:46.the Olympic Stadium, she will be very businesslike, and I have a lot

:27:46. > :27:52.of confidence in her and her ability. She has progressed nicely

:27:53. > :27:56.the last couple of years. She has a steely determination that we see

:27:56. > :28:00.are often when the chips are down, and I think it is going to be

:28:00. > :28:03.fantastic. Of all the events happening in the stadium over the

:28:03. > :28:07.next few days, the heptathlon is right up there in terms of how

:28:07. > :28:11.gruelling it is, seven different disciplines. Seven different

:28:11. > :28:15.disciplines, two very long days of competition. The girls will have

:28:15. > :28:19.been away from 6am this morning, going through breakfast,

:28:19. > :28:22.visualising what they need to do, and you know, it is how you manage

:28:22. > :28:27.yourself between the events that really makes the difference,

:28:27. > :28:30.keeping your mind focused on the job, but at the same time allowing

:28:30. > :28:35.yourself to switch off and just relax and take the tension out of

:28:35. > :28:40.the body. The first we will see is the 100m hurdles and the high jump,

:28:40. > :28:44.how does she bear in knows? Great events for Jess, she is one of the

:28:44. > :28:48.strongest hurdlers in the field, and she will be going in the last

:28:48. > :28:52.heat. She will want to get up to a good start, get rid of all that

:28:52. > :28:56.nervous tension, but it is a great event for her. She will get such a

:28:56. > :29:02.roar from the crowd, and that will really spur her on. The high jump

:29:02. > :29:05.equally has proven to be one of the best events. She holds the equal

:29:05. > :29:10.record for the high jump, the British record for the high jump,

:29:10. > :29:13.and she will want to make sure that is a good advent for her.

:29:13. > :29:16.Psychologically it will really help. The pressure is tricky, because

:29:16. > :29:22.some people think that all she needs to do is turn up and waved to

:29:22. > :29:26.get a gold medal, but there is some really tough competition at there.

:29:26. > :29:32.Yes, Tatyana Chernova is the reigning world champion from last

:29:32. > :29:37.year in Daegu, who beat Jess, and I think that Falk Jess was a real

:29:37. > :29:42.wake-up call. There's also Nataliya Dobrynska, who was the reigning

:29:42. > :29:48.Olympic champion. She has had its trials and tribulations, lost their

:29:48. > :29:53.coach and husband this year in March. So she has got a point to

:29:53. > :29:56.prove. But I think Jess, she has the edge, there is something about

:29:56. > :30:00.consistency in heptathlon which she has proved time and again that she

:30:01. > :30:08.can deliver. But let's not forget the two other heptathletes that you

:30:08. > :30:12.mentioned earlier, Katarina Johnson-Thompson... Very young, 19.

:30:12. > :30:17.19, and she did an amazing personal best to qualify for the Games, so

:30:17. > :30:22.watch out for her, because she is likely in the next few years to

:30:22. > :30:27.take over Jess's mantle. And Louise Hazel as well, fellow Birchfield

:30:27. > :30:32.Harrier. We will be seen or three inaction very soon. The first event

:30:32. > :30:36.is the 100m hurdles, and it begins within the hour. What about the

:30:36. > :30:40.bigger picture with the athletics team? Charles van Commenee is

:30:40. > :30:50.targeting eight medals, double the total from Beijing, so who are the

:30:50. > :31:27.

:31:27. > :31:35.Mo Farah takes the gold for Great Britain, and Thompson makes it in

:31:35. > :31:45.second. Greene get the gold! Perri Shakes-Drayton has taken this field

:31:45. > :31:45.

:31:45. > :32:27.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 91 seconds

:32:27. > :32:32.Great Britain has found another Just some of the faces you will be

:32:32. > :32:38.seen in action in the next few days, Kiwayu looking out for? Where do we

:32:38. > :32:42.start?! The brats of events, where we could possibly do well, is so

:32:43. > :32:46.great now compared to Beijing. -- the breadth. Robbie Grabarz in the

:32:46. > :32:51.men's high jump has had a remarkable season, breaking the

:32:51. > :32:57.British record, sorry, breaking his own personal record four times. He

:32:57. > :33:01.has a great opportunity to get a medal. There has not been an ideal

:33:01. > :33:10.situation for Phillips Idowu to be in, this row with Charles van

:33:10. > :33:15.Commenee, what you make about that? It is one of those things were two

:33:15. > :33:19.people just collided. Their personalities just clash. Phillips

:33:19. > :33:27.likes to do things his own way. In this instance, we know he has got a

:33:27. > :33:31.slight injury... He's been kind of under the radar a little bit. For

:33:31. > :33:35.me, personally, when an athlete chooses how to prepare for an event

:33:35. > :33:38.like this, I think it has to be his decision on how he'd like to

:33:38. > :33:41.prepare in his run-up to the Olympics. Charles is very

:33:42. > :33:46.headstrong. He sets a very high standard and he expects the

:33:46. > :33:51.athletes to fall in line. And no- nonsense Dutchman. Of Bury. But

:33:51. > :33:55.it's one of those things. We just have to be careful that it doesn't

:33:55. > :33:58.overshadow everything else that's happening. We've got some great

:33:58. > :34:02.athletics to look forward to, and let's hope Phillips is fit and

:34:02. > :34:09.healthy and ready to go. Let's have a look inside the stadium, because

:34:09. > :34:15.the stage is set. This is what it looks like inside. Lots of British

:34:15. > :34:23.interest throughout these athletics events. How important will an early

:34:23. > :34:27.medal before the whole team's morale? It will give them a huge

:34:27. > :34:31.lift. Jess Ennis is a huge figure in that team. It's important she

:34:31. > :34:35.does do well because it will galvanise everyone else to believe

:34:35. > :34:40.that they have their moment and it's a possibility that they could

:34:40. > :34:45.equal her achievements. It's great that one of our senior members is

:34:45. > :34:49.up there. It is a fantastic setting for them. We will have to let you

:34:49. > :34:53.get over there because you need to get there before everything gets

:34:53. > :34:56.under way. High hopes in the Olympic Stadium, and the same goes

:34:57. > :35:00.for Eton Dorney today. That's because the Robling finals include

:35:00. > :35:05.the women's double sculls with Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins.

:35:05. > :35:07.The race is just after midday, and there won't be a dry eye in the

:35:08. > :35:12.house if they won gold in the women's double sculls. And that's

:35:12. > :35:16.just the BBC Presentation Team I'm talking about! After silver medals

:35:16. > :35:24.in Sydney, Athens and Beijing, surely it is time for a London gold

:35:24. > :35:29.for Katherine Grainger. When I started rowing at university, I was

:35:29. > :35:39.really not very good at it at all. I loved it, great fun, but it was

:35:39. > :35:42.never, while, she is destined for I didn't start rowing thinking I

:35:42. > :35:49.would be an Olympic athlete. I just started because it was a great

:35:49. > :35:52.thing to do, very sociable, great bunch of people and I loved it.

:35:52. > :36:00.There were all these constant gold settings and moving on and moving

:36:00. > :36:06.on. I've probably learnt that everyone is capable of so much more

:36:06. > :36:09.than they know. How much people can set the high, ambitious goals, and

:36:09. > :36:13.just going on that journey to achieve them, they will learn so

:36:13. > :36:18.much about themselves and do things that they never thought was

:36:18. > :36:22.possible. We've been in a good place city - that pretty much since

:36:23. > :36:26.we got the boat together. It's very exciting to be in. We've been

:36:26. > :36:31.hugely successful, never been beaten. We are the lead crew to go

:36:31. > :36:36.out and beat. Especially on your home soil, everyone is going to

:36:36. > :36:41.want that. They have always been role-models and people to look up

:36:41. > :36:46.to. I don't think anyone sets out to be that successful person, but

:36:46. > :36:49.in pursuit of excellence in other ways you realise you are then at

:36:49. > :36:54.that standard that to become someone who can show people how it

:36:54. > :36:59.can be done. It is just a great journey to be on. It has been an

:36:59. > :37:04.incredible journey. And hopefully it is one that will have a happy

:37:04. > :37:07.ending. A big moment for Katherine Grainger, and a big day for all the

:37:07. > :37:10.finalists that will be racing in the next couple of hours. Let's see

:37:11. > :37:14.how Eton Dorney is looking this morning.

:37:14. > :37:18.It's looking much as it has done for the past few days, the sun

:37:19. > :37:23.glinting down, shining off the water, the crowds absolutely packed

:37:24. > :37:27.out, its impact since 9am. The first few races of minimal

:37:27. > :37:31.consequence to everyone who's come here to watch. They hope for

:37:31. > :37:36.British gold and may be even more than that. Steve, there is a danger

:37:36. > :37:40.of all of us laugh -- lapsing into hyperbole over the last few hours,

:37:40. > :37:46.but it is an immense favour Catherine get -- Katherine Grainger.

:37:46. > :37:49.Not least that Jessica Ennis has been the poster girl for British

:37:49. > :37:54.athletics, Katherine Grainger has been a poster girl for rowing for a

:37:54. > :37:59.decade. Everybody wants her to win today. It's not just within the

:37:59. > :38:04.sport, it's outside the sport. I was with Denise Lewis back in the

:38:04. > :38:09.studio. She was talking about it. She knows Katherine Grainger very

:38:09. > :38:14.well. What ever sport, this could be the moment for the British team.

:38:14. > :38:20.A fantastic story of all these silver medals. Six times world

:38:20. > :38:24.champion. It is this coming to be the date? And Anna Watkins as well.

:38:24. > :38:27.The performance between the two girls, they take it in terms of

:38:27. > :38:31.trials of who actually wins. There's not that much difference

:38:31. > :38:34.between the two of them when they have to race each other in single

:38:34. > :38:41.sculls. They are outstanding athletes. We will have more chance

:38:41. > :38:43.to talk about Catherine as we get closer to the race. Jeff Ennis is

:38:43. > :38:47.and the monumental pressure, but she was saying it is how you

:38:47. > :38:52.respond to that pressure that determines how successful you are.

:38:52. > :38:55.You can take energy from it and perform as a consequence. Catherine

:38:55. > :39:00.says the same thing. She's taking the positives out of the fact that

:39:00. > :39:04.everybody is looking at that, as opposed to regarding it as an

:39:04. > :39:07.albatross around her neck. Very much so. It's how you cope with

:39:07. > :39:13.that pressure that makes the difference. That is what makes the

:39:13. > :39:15.Olympics so special, is that they have won the last to mark Road

:39:15. > :39:19.World Championships, they have won every time they've gone in double

:39:19. > :39:22.sculls together, but it counts for nothing if they don't win here.

:39:22. > :39:27.There is that expectation of pressure. One little bit of

:39:27. > :39:30.pressure that has been taken of his they are not now the first women's

:39:30. > :39:34.crew to win eight Olympic gold medal. But that is what makes great

:39:34. > :39:38.champions, how you cope with the situation. I used to love it in

:39:38. > :39:41.some ways. Sitting here thinking about it, I'm thinking, how did I

:39:42. > :39:47.used to do that? But it's how you cope with it. You've got to get a

:39:47. > :39:51.good performance out. There is a helluva lot of pressure on. The

:39:51. > :39:55.next couple of hours will be sheer hell for them, but they will

:39:55. > :39:59.remember this day for the rest of their lives. There is an extra buzz

:39:59. > :40:03.around Eton Dorney today, not just because of Kath Grainger and Anna

:40:03. > :40:06.Watkins, because we have four finals. We have the men's quad, who

:40:06. > :40:13.have an outside chance of a metal, the men's pair, who have a

:40:13. > :40:18.reasonable chance of a medal, and then the single sculls at -- this

:40:18. > :40:24.afternoon. Alan's regime is no different to everybody else. It is:,

:40:24. > :40:34.relentless, a commitment to have to make 24/7. Even when it is

:40:34. > :40:37.

:40:37. > :40:44.It is mentally very hard and very tough. I have given up a

:40:44. > :40:49.comfortable Christmas. I've dreamed that final race a 1000 times. I've

:40:49. > :40:55.won it every single one, thankfully. Hopefully the sacrifice as well add

:40:55. > :41:05.up to a gold. You do dream about standing up on that podium. It's at

:41:05. > :41:08.

:41:08. > :41:12.that point you think, I will be I'm quite a bit rocky fan. My

:41:12. > :41:17.favourite film would be Rocky four. That is why this would camp was

:41:17. > :41:21.born. The real purpose behind it was not only to toughen up Alan

:41:21. > :41:25.physically, but it was to give him that strength in the head, the

:41:25. > :41:30.mental willpower and determination you need in this sport which is so

:41:31. > :41:34.hard, especially for in the final in that last 500m for a guy who

:41:34. > :41:42.really wants it, the guy who can draw on something, be it from Court

:41:42. > :41:45.or from his girlfriend or from some thought, in Alan's case that the be

:41:45. > :41:51.all of those things. He can think, I did that would camp at Christmas,

:41:51. > :41:55.I'm tougher than they are. He can go that extra fruit -- few strokes

:41:55. > :42:00.and that beat them all. This is a rare occurrence, I'm in the kitchen.

:42:00. > :42:04.I'm usually treated like a prince when I'm at home, but I just want

:42:04. > :42:11.to get them out early so they aren't too hard. I've already had

:42:11. > :42:15.porridge this morning. My mum was up at 6am making it. I just cannot

:42:15. > :42:18.keep this lad fed. The supermarket bill has gone through the roof. The

:42:18. > :42:24.whole business of his Christmas training, out on Christmas Day.

:42:24. > :42:28.This year was a pleasure. That was in 12 degrees. Last year it was

:42:28. > :42:38.miners 14, but he is going for this. He is not leaving any Stone

:42:38. > :42:43.

:42:43. > :42:48.He has had glandular fever, he's had operations, he's ridden a bike

:42:48. > :42:52.to tried to beat Chris Hoy but fell off, he had concussion. We dream --

:42:52. > :42:57.we've been through a lot of trials and tribulations. There is no one

:42:58. > :43:02.more determined and committed than Allen. It was the old man Steve

:43:02. > :43:07.Redgrave holding up the young boy at the championships. I feel like

:43:07. > :43:12.someone has cut my legs off, it really hurts. That's what you call

:43:12. > :43:19.giving your all, isn't it? The gold, what does it mean, what is it

:43:19. > :43:25.worth? For me, part of it will be an apology for all the times I've

:43:25. > :43:30.annoyed bail and cursed at him and been a prima donna and all that.

:43:30. > :43:35.For Jules, any time I've made her feel second-best. For my parents,

:43:35. > :43:39.for the adviser may have squandered. And to friends and family, for the

:43:39. > :43:42.times I've missed. To sponsors as well, for the times I've said, I

:43:42. > :43:47.can't come in and do that event or come in and see you because I've

:43:47. > :43:50.got to do my training. Hopefully, they will accept that gold as an

:43:50. > :43:55.apology and hopefully... And because they will have played a

:43:55. > :43:59.part in winning that gold for me. Regardless of what happens, I want

:43:59. > :44:04.to be able to stand up, be proud and know that I did everything I

:44:04. > :44:07.can do and couldn't have taken another stroke. On a glorious,

:44:07. > :44:12.sunny Friday morning at Eton Dorney, Alan Campbell will be remembering

:44:12. > :44:16.Christmas Day back in Coleraine. Do you know how he does that? On his

:44:16. > :44:21.iPod, which he has with his head bones, he has Christmas songs, even

:44:21. > :44:24.in July and August he is listening to stop the cavalry and things like

:44:24. > :44:28.that. That gets him back into thinking what it was like in

:44:28. > :44:32.Northern Ireland in December. a real character. Globally the hard

:44:32. > :44:36.work will come to fruition today. Realistically his prospects are

:44:36. > :44:41.bat? To win, I wouldn't have thought so. To win a bronze medal,

:44:41. > :44:46.yes, I would be so. Chris Hoy, equalling the number of gold medals

:44:46. > :44:50.yesterday. He is a phenomenon. just equalling, he's got a silver,

:44:50. > :44:55.I've only got a bronze. He is at the top of that list now. He's a

:44:55. > :45:01.great guy, a great competitor. I watched it last night, it was

:45:01. > :45:06.fantastic. Seeing his demotion of what it meant to him - Maxine his

:45:06. > :45:13.demotion of what it meant to him, it was very special. Now to a man

:45:13. > :45:18.who has been the embodiment of the Olympic Games so far. This man has

:45:18. > :45:21.become a cult figure at Eton Dorney. Here he is finishing his last race,

:45:21. > :45:26.finishing in last position, as he has done throughout the week. He

:45:26. > :45:31.has been a real character. Everybody has been enamoured with

:45:31. > :45:34.his engaging personality. I don't know if he gets a ticker-tape

:45:35. > :45:43.reception when he goes back home, but he deserves it because he has

:45:43. > :45:47.been an integral part of the past Steve will be back with you later.

:45:47. > :45:51.It is one of those Olympic days to say that. Top-class action on the

:45:51. > :45:54.lakes, the track and in the pool. Last night in the Aquatics Centre,

:45:54. > :46:04.anyone who thought that Michael Phelps was ready to watch

:46:04. > :46:08.

:46:08. > :46:16.gracefully the changing of the individual medley. A good starting

:46:16. > :46:20.three from Phelps. Lochte second. Lochte looking to make the move on

:46:20. > :46:26.this but he's not. Phelps is very good and determined here. Look at

:46:26. > :46:32.that. If Lochte is going to get this, he's got to go now would make

:46:32. > :46:38.a really big move. But look at felt skull. This is an awesome final.

:46:38. > :46:43.Lochte is coming back but I think it's going to be Phelps. It is

:46:43. > :46:47.Lochte's world record and is still Lochte's world record, but the

:46:47. > :46:53.winner goes to Phelps. Three in a row. The great Michael Phelps has

:46:53. > :46:57.just won his 20th Olympic medal. Finally, he's won an individual

:46:57. > :47:05.gold medal. For I wanted to try and be forced the front half as much as

:47:05. > :47:09.I could. I'm pretty pleased. It's a gold medal. Someone special run you

:47:09. > :47:15.yesterday, didn't they? Yes, the President called me yesterday. It

:47:15. > :47:20.was pretty cool. Somebody called and asked for me. They said, hold

:47:20. > :47:26.pleas for the President of the United States. I was, like, OK!

:47:26. > :47:34.Michael Phelps, the first ever Olympian to reach 20 medals, an

:47:34. > :47:38.At the Aquatics Centre tonight, we will have everything crossed for a

:47:38. > :47:43.first British gold. I imagine Phelps isn't taking many calls at

:47:43. > :47:46.the moment, but I'm glad you made that exception for the President. I

:47:46. > :47:49.misunderstood the way he said it. Somebody called from the White

:47:50. > :47:55.House and said, Mr Phelps, we have the President for you, Will you

:47:55. > :47:59.hold? Straightaway Obama comes through and says, well done. He was

:47:59. > :48:03.immense. Better than I've ever seen him last night in terms of the

:48:03. > :48:06.amount he gave in that race. Yes, it was one of those situations

:48:06. > :48:11.where Ryan Lochte helped him out. Ryan Lochte Hadaway's 30 minutes

:48:11. > :48:19.before. I think locked would have been a handful, but it played into

:48:19. > :48:24.Michael Phelps' hands. Out of all these events, to do the treble, --

:48:24. > :48:27.to do the treble. He hadn't done it. This meant so much to him. He's

:48:27. > :48:31.given so much time to people simply because he realises this is it,

:48:31. > :48:35.he's not going to raise any any more. We've seen a lovely sight to

:48:35. > :48:38.Michael Phelps, everybody appreciating demand understanding

:48:38. > :48:42.him more. Because he's more Honourable this year and these

:48:42. > :48:46.younger swimmers are coming up, you can't bat quite believe that we've

:48:46. > :48:49.seen it. Tonight, we are focusing on the greatest female British

:48:50. > :48:53.swimmer there's ever been, the greatest British swimmer, Becky

:48:53. > :49:00.Adlington. Two gold medals from Beijing, a bronze from London

:49:00. > :49:05.already. Tonight is the 800m. She's qualified fastest, but only just.

:49:05. > :49:09.We all know and the swimming world, it is her and Lotte Friis together.

:49:10. > :49:15.The two of them are side by side. This is set up for a classic race.

:49:15. > :49:19.I think Becky likes to dominate the race and take it out, Friis will be

:49:19. > :49:22.sat with her. I don't know how it's going to work. One thing but he

:49:22. > :49:31.does do, she's really soft and lovely outside the pool, but you

:49:31. > :49:36.Watching the piece and Katherine Grainger made me think of Becky,

:49:36. > :49:40.you are right, for all the talk of buying shoes honour killing Nas,

:49:40. > :49:49.she has a core of steel. She handles pressure, expectation, what

:49:49. > :49:58.every wants to call it. You hear all these stories, you see the

:49:58. > :50:03.athletes, to take them there, the sacrifices from the family.

:50:03. > :50:07.Athletes need to be selfish to get the best out of themselves, but I

:50:07. > :50:12.know her coach very well, and no- one pushes themselves as hard as

:50:12. > :50:19.she does, morning, Knight, everything is good enough for these

:50:19. > :50:23.moments. -- night. She is such a lovely person but she is a fighter.

:50:23. > :50:29.The other thing that swimming has in common with rowing and cycling,

:50:29. > :50:33.we are not talking about big money. They do not get any gold financial

:50:34. > :50:37.bonus, America does, but none of them are rich, and she lives a very

:50:37. > :50:42.simple life. She is the girl next door from Mansfield, it is not

:50:42. > :50:47.about money. It is not like getting into football because they see the

:50:47. > :50:52.flash cars, people do not get into swimming for that reason. They get

:50:52. > :50:55.into swimming because somebody goes, you know what, you are quite good,

:50:55. > :50:59.and then is determined athlete inside you, the competitor takes

:50:59. > :51:05.over. You go along to a swimming club, and the ones who make it,

:51:05. > :51:13.there is an element of... Mbeki is 6 ft tall, that helps, but you

:51:13. > :51:17.cannot put a natural competitor in someone. -- Becky. Someone needs to

:51:17. > :51:21.have the fight, the fire, the determination to wanted so much

:51:21. > :51:25.more than anybody else, that she has sacrificed so much for this

:51:26. > :51:33.moment. They're so much expectation on air, she will deliver, it is

:51:33. > :51:37.just what Lotte Friis does tonight. -- there is so much expectation on

:51:37. > :51:41.her. I promise you Rebecca Adlington is not doing it just for

:51:41. > :51:46.herself, she desperately wants to do this in the London Games, but

:51:46. > :51:50.gold or silver is a great result. 7:45pm, of course we are cheering

:51:50. > :51:56.her on, but we will accept whatever she can give us, because he will

:51:56. > :52:01.have put everything into it. 50m freestyle heats, tons of them,

:52:01. > :52:08.about 10! People from all sorts of countries, we will be showing you

:52:08. > :52:14.those on BBC Three. We have also got the heats for the 1,500m which

:52:14. > :52:20.is 30 lengths of the pool. And we have got relay heats, or on BBC,

:52:20. > :52:30.Fran Halsall and Amy Smith going in the 50m freestyle for Britain.

:52:30. > :52:54.

:52:54. > :52:57.David Davies at Daniel fog in a 7:45pm tonight for Rebecca

:52:57. > :53:01.Adlington's final, we will all be watching, and do not underestimate

:53:01. > :53:07.how hard it is for a champion Olympic swimmer to defend their

:53:07. > :53:11.title, very difficult indeed. In the sailing, we are approaching the

:53:11. > :53:21.end, Ben Ainslie is hoping for gold. He had an indifferent start down in

:53:21. > :53:24.

:53:24. > :53:28.Weymouth, but yesterday he had a The Dane has sailed quite possibly

:53:28. > :53:35.the best race of all. An incredible comeback, very frustrating for

:53:35. > :53:40.Ainslie. Ainslie beaten by Hogh- Christensen in every race. Race

:53:40. > :53:49.seven, and finally Ben Ainslie had a chance, forcing the Great Dane to

:53:49. > :53:53.attack. Britain versus Denmark, Ainslie has to beat the Danish

:53:53. > :54:03.sailor for the first time at these Olympic Games. O Christensen was

:54:03. > :54:03.

:54:03. > :54:12.Danish sailor, home Christensen has capsized and is on his side. -- O

:54:12. > :54:16.Chris Stimpson. Ben Ainslie seized the opportunity. There it is, Ben

:54:16. > :54:21.Ainslie has beat in the Danish, come on, you can see him, he

:54:21. > :54:26.believes it! But the Dane is a fierce competitor. In the second

:54:26. > :54:30.race of the day, Ainslie was forced to chase them once again.

:54:30. > :54:35.Ainslie has rounded the mark, chasing the Danish sailor. There is

:54:35. > :54:41.an exchange between them. Ben Ainslie is doing a penalty turn.

:54:41. > :54:48.All I can imagine is that he is telling Ainslie, you hit the mark.

:54:48. > :54:53.To us explain a little bit about the altercation of the conversation

:54:53. > :55:00.from the Dutch sailor. Was he saying you had hit the mark? Yes,

:55:00. > :55:05.both him and the Danish guy, basically they teamed up on me. I

:55:05. > :55:09.am seriously unhappy with that. But you know, they made a mistake, I am

:55:09. > :55:14.angry, they don't want to make me angry. From where I was sailing, it

:55:14. > :55:17.looked very much like Ben hit the mark. If he was sure he didn't, he

:55:17. > :55:23.should not have done the penalty turn. I had no choice, because if

:55:23. > :55:27.it goes with protest, two against one, you are going to lose. Despite

:55:27. > :55:31.the paddle people something he believed he had not done, Ainslie

:55:31. > :55:38.took two wins over his rival in just one day. With three races left,

:55:38. > :55:44.there is nothing it. Beware, Great Dane, Ainslie's in animal is

:55:44. > :55:49.awakened. It is that, you know, really bad. I am not happy with

:55:49. > :55:57.that. It has happened to me a lot in the Olympics before. Now I am

:55:57. > :56:02.older and wiser now not to fall for Ben Ainslie is back on the water

:56:02. > :56:06.today, the sailing starts again at midday. Beyond the 16 days of sport,

:56:06. > :56:09.the hope is of a sporting legacy from these games, and one medal

:56:09. > :56:13.winner after another has been talking about who they watched in

:56:13. > :56:23.the past and who inspired them, so if you think that athletics might

:56:23. > :56:26.

:56:26. > :56:30.be for you, this is the story of Growing up in Jarrow, South

:56:30. > :56:36.Tyneside, was not... I don't know, it did not seem to be the best

:56:36. > :56:41.place in the world at the time. A lot of unemployment, shipyards

:56:41. > :56:44.closing. Having said that, I think as a kid, you cannot ride through a

:56:44. > :56:51.lot of that and you concentrate on your own little environment, which

:56:51. > :56:55.was great. I run my first race, 400m, for the school. I remember

:56:55. > :57:00.the guy came up to me afterwards, he said, you are not Tabar little

:57:00. > :57:06.runner. He said, you should come down the Athletic Club. That was

:57:06. > :57:11.the first time I met Jimmy Hedley, I came down the club a week later.

:57:11. > :57:19.A lot of kids come to the athletics club, they try it out and then go...

:57:19. > :57:24.For mane, it was the friends I made, the atmosphere. -- me. We used to

:57:24. > :57:28.play football, table tennis, go for a run, it was great fun, like a

:57:28. > :57:33.youth club. I do not know what I thought it was, but it seemed like

:57:33. > :57:38.a fun place to go two nights a week. And then there were girls as well,

:57:38. > :57:41.which always help. I did a lot of my training right up until I was

:57:41. > :57:46.almost a world champion on this here, and he would not get athletes

:57:46. > :57:51.doing that this day's. They would think it was not good enough. --

:57:51. > :57:55.these days. I ran my first race and came second, and I was kind of book.

:57:56. > :58:03.Jimmy was really good at getting me to realise that this was something

:58:03. > :58:08.I could be quite good at. A lot of times I remember racing here, it

:58:08. > :58:13.was not a proper race. I had been pre-selected for the Olympics in

:58:13. > :58:17.1984, I was injured running up to it, and I needed one race to decide

:58:17. > :58:21.whether I would go to Los Angeles. I had not realised this, because I

:58:21. > :58:25.just turned up and Jimmy had sorted out, but he rang you to come down

:58:25. > :58:30.and help out. Jimmy was on the phone, I can remember about 9

:58:30. > :58:35.o'clock on Thursday night, can you get some Lansdowne, Steve is doing

:58:35. > :58:40.a time-trial. I said, right, a bit short notice, see what I will do. I

:58:40. > :58:45.made a few phone calls, and every one of the lads said they would

:58:45. > :58:48.take time off work or college and come down at 12 o'clock on Saturday

:58:48. > :58:54.afternoon to come down to try to help Steve, because you were well

:58:54. > :58:59.respected. I am glad I did, because obviously I had a silver medal, and

:59:00. > :59:03.I would not have done otherwise. People do not realise that top-

:59:03. > :59:11.level and Indians, what you are doing behind closed doors, as it

:59:11. > :59:17.were. -- Olympians. People say it must be a great feeling, and it is

:59:17. > :59:22.a great feeling, but it is also great when you are 16 and you break

:59:22. > :59:27.four minutes for the 1,500m for the first time. Stephen Grahm of Jarrow

:59:27. > :59:37.has had the race of his life, and he has not only beaten four minutes,

:59:37. > :59:43.

:59:43. > :59:48.If he would like to get involved in Olympic sports, go to the website.

:59:48. > :59:52.The fantastic story of Steve Cram, the pinnacle of that career is

:59:52. > :59:55.being in the BBC commentary box! How strong do you think the

:59:56. > :00:00.potential is here to inspire a generation? If they cannot be

:00:00. > :00:04.inspired here, I do not know where they can be. This is a fantastic

:00:04. > :00:08.venue, and the noise has been phenomenal already. I know that has

:00:08. > :00:11.been said at a lot of the venues, but we are hoping that our athletes

:00:11. > :00:17.are going to rise to the occasion here and do very well. I think we

:00:17. > :00:21.will do, I think we were when -- I think we will win lots of medals.

:00:21. > :00:26.Who knows what the youngsters at home will think, who they will be

:00:27. > :00:29.inspired by. And he's said it was a good way to meet girls! There is

:00:29. > :00:35.that as well. We like to think of athletics as a sport that has

:00:35. > :00:39.something for everybody, fast, slow, endurance, throwing, jumping, boys

:00:39. > :00:43.and girls as well. Do you think there is something especially

:00:43. > :00:49.motivating about seeing a British athlete he does fantastically well?

:00:49. > :00:52.Does that have added power? I think it does. I'm not sure that I

:00:52. > :00:56.mentioned how much have an influence Brendan Foster was. He

:00:56. > :00:59.lived half a mile down the road, and when I was 12 or 13, watching

:00:59. > :01:04.him at the Munich and Index on television, running around the

:01:04. > :01:09.world, you think, hang on, he talks the same as I do, he is doing these

:01:10. > :01:14.great things. I think role-models are incredibly important. How much

:01:14. > :01:17.has athletics changed since your time? The basics are the same. You

:01:17. > :01:21.have still got to train hard and have a lot of belief, certainly at

:01:21. > :01:25.this level. There is a lot more help and support around the

:01:25. > :01:29.athletes. I have just been with our team in Portugal earlier in the

:01:29. > :01:33.week, and the support systems for them are immense. They are probably

:01:33. > :01:37.as good as anyone else in the world at getting the athletes ready for

:01:37. > :01:40.the big day. But once they get out, it is still the same, you have got

:01:40. > :01:44.to believe in your own ability, believe in the hard work that you

:01:45. > :01:48.have done, go out and executes in a way... They know they have the

:01:48. > :01:53.potential to do well, they have just got to deliver and hopefully

:01:53. > :01:57.deliver better than ever before. good to have them out of the

:01:57. > :02:00.Olympic excitement in Portugal, they have just come back to London.

:02:00. > :02:04.They are coming in three days before the competition, so there

:02:04. > :02:08.are still athletes in Portugal who will be watching us and getting

:02:08. > :02:12.nervous today. The idea was to allow them to prepare in an intense

:02:12. > :02:16.environment, which it always is, but in a quiet way, if you like,

:02:16. > :02:20.not living in the village, and with the other sports starting before

:02:20. > :02:24.they did, not getting too excited, if you like. They are as good as I

:02:24. > :02:28.have seen the British athletics team in terms of preparation, very

:02:28. > :02:31.relaxed, I am sure they are raring to go, and we are looking forward

:02:31. > :02:34.to seeing them getting going this morning. It is going to be a very

:02:35. > :02:38.busy morning, we will hear lots from you, Steve, thank you very

:02:38. > :02:42.much. Let's take our first trip inside the stadium and see how

:02:42. > :02:47.everything is gearing up. Within half an hour, everything will get

:02:47. > :02:50.under way, so we can join John Arthur Edwards, Michael Johnson and

:02:50. > :02:56.Colin Jackson. Let me tell you, the excitement is

:02:56. > :03:00.palpable. We have had the countdown, it is really rocking, we have got a

:03:00. > :03:10.massive morning, Jessica Ennis, Christine Ohuruogu and Dai Greene.

:03:10. > :03:13.

:03:13. > :03:17.So many people have texted me, can't way for athletics to start,

:03:17. > :03:21.today is the real start of the Olympic, all of that sort of thing,

:03:21. > :03:26.it is incredible. I think we will be in for some great athletic, this

:03:26. > :03:31.is one of the most exciting Olympic athletic sessions I have ever seen,

:03:31. > :03:37.I mean there is so many great stories coming in, a lot of talk

:03:37. > :03:40.about the men's 100 metres, the women's 100m is going to be an

:03:40. > :03:45.incredible competition. The heptathlon. One of the great things

:03:45. > :03:49.about this, this Olympics, as far as athletics is concerned, there is

:03:49. > :03:52.less this talk about records, more talk about who is going to win the

:03:52. > :03:58.medals. That is what is exciting, the competition between the athlete,

:03:58. > :04:03.when you have got, five or six who can all contend for the medals. It

:04:03. > :04:06.creates great races and a lot of buzz, which we are feeling already.

:04:06. > :04:11.We are. Colin, Charles van Commenee said this is the strongest British

:04:11. > :04:15.team for 30 years, would you agree with that? I would. We have so many

:04:15. > :04:19.medal shots and genuine shots which makes it very great find. Remember,

:04:19. > :04:23.four years ago, the team were very young, they were getting uses to

:04:24. > :04:28.competition. Now they have gone through their process, they have

:04:28. > :04:33.won medals at European level and world level. Now it is time for the

:04:33. > :04:36.Olympic games to deliver something special. Amazing atmosphere. Jess

:04:36. > :04:41.Ennis will be out in a few minutes type. You know what it is like to

:04:41. > :04:46.come out in front of a home crowd. How do you think she will respond?

:04:46. > :04:49.Incredibly well, because she has that type of personality, that is,

:04:49. > :04:55.much more conducive to being very focused. She is not a very emotion

:04:55. > :05:00.a, you know, type of person, she is very even in terms of demeanour, I

:05:00. > :05:03.think she will get into a serious focus mind set when she comes out

:05:03. > :05:07.here. She won't be affected by the crowd. We always here about people

:05:07. > :05:12.talking about the home crowd, and the home team, home crowd advantage,

:05:13. > :05:16.there are disadvantages because you walk into the stadium, you are

:05:16. > :05:21.reminded of the grandeur of the situation and how most of the

:05:21. > :05:26.people in this stadium will be behind Jess, that is an incredible

:05:26. > :05:29.amount of pressure to put on one self. She will be able to block all

:05:29. > :05:33.of that and focus on the event. She has four events today. She knows

:05:33. > :05:37.she will have to get off to a flying start. Because of that, she

:05:37. > :05:41.knows that today is the day, it is the first day but today is her best

:05:41. > :05:45.day and her best opportunity to win this competition. She has to get a

:05:45. > :05:50.lead going today because she has strong events. She has, hurdles.

:05:50. > :05:56.Crucial, isn't it. She has to run 13. She does. She will have to get

:05:56. > :06:02.close to her best, in all these first four events, as Michael said,

:06:02. > :06:06.she has to high jump very well, she has to throw the shot put very well

:06:06. > :06:10.and the hurdle, the biggest jeopardy, you are rusty, you

:06:10. > :06:15.haven't done any competition yet, to me this is the most intense

:06:15. > :06:18.competition she will be under. She has a heat where she isn't even the

:06:19. > :06:24.fastest, even though she has a world class personal best. This is

:06:24. > :06:28.what makes it exciting. Let us hope she keep hers head and delivering

:06:28. > :06:32.what we hope for her. The long jump and the javelin are the two where

:06:32. > :06:38.she is shaky. She will have a lot more confidence going into those

:06:38. > :06:44.two event, based on the fact that she has done so well in her other

:06:44. > :06:48.event, she has set personal bests, that takes pressure off. She will

:06:48. > :06:53.never become great at those events and she knows it. It takes a bit of

:06:53. > :06:56.the pressure off knowing she can run a good hurdle race, a great 200

:06:56. > :07:00.metres tonight that. Will take some of the pressure off. When she is

:07:00. > :07:07.under less pressure, she will compete better tomorrow in the long

:07:07. > :07:17.jump, afterLynn. We are yesterdayy to go for the first track event, in

:07:17. > :07:40.

:07:40. > :07:44.the crowd go crazy. There is the line up for the first event. Three

:07:44. > :07:54.athletes wearing the British colours, Katarina Johnson-Thompson

:07:54. > :07:54.

:07:54. > :08:02.goes in heat number four. And Louise Hazel goes in heat three.

:08:02. > :08:10.Austra Skujyte, Lithuania Olympic silver medallist, back in 2004. And

:08:10. > :08:20.Marcussen, the Norwegian record holder. Wonderful to see the

:08:20. > :08:34.

:08:34. > :08:39.stadium so, so busy and so alive. sprint races where a false start

:08:39. > :08:43.would mean instant disqualification for one athletes. It is back to the

:08:43. > :08:49.old rule of track and field, which means if an athlete is responsible

:08:49. > :08:52.for a second false start, that looked as though it was Marcussen

:08:52. > :08:59.of Norway, there would be a disqualification, but not unusual,

:08:59. > :09:02.in multi-events, Steve, is it, to see a few nervous people. Some non-

:09:02. > :09:07.specialist sprinters getting a false start. I am sure there are a

:09:07. > :09:15.few nerves as well, Paul, even for the experienced athletes, first

:09:15. > :09:19.morning of the Olympic Games, first event. Huge crowd. Maybe excused,

:09:19. > :09:29.lane three, don't forget there are nine lanes here, often lane one

:09:29. > :09:29.

:09:29. > :09:38.will be empty. Well that was Marcussen being warned. The line up

:09:38. > :09:42.once more mar kas, Marcussen, Austra Skujyte, Machtig, Yana

:09:42. > :09:45.Maksimava, Dadic and Karolina Tyminska. The athlete nearest the

:09:45. > :09:49.camera, Karolina Tyminska, should figure in the overall standings at

:09:49. > :09:54.the top of the table, in this heptathlon. She finished seventh in

:09:54. > :10:00.the Olympic games if 2008. She is a brilliant 800 metre runners, that

:10:00. > :10:04.is the last event. They get away and Marcussen gets away well, so

:10:04. > :10:10.does Karolina Tyminska nearest the camera the Polish champion is

:10:10. > :10:13.flying. And all of her time will be converted into points, this is a

:10:14. > :10:19.brilliant performance by Karolina Tyminska. And Yana Maksimava and

:10:19. > :10:22.Austra Skujyte crossing the line virtually together. 13 .22. Just a

:10:22. > :10:26.tenth of a second outside of her lifetime best performance for

:10:26. > :10:32.Karolina Tyminska. So the Polish champion who is well-known to all

:10:32. > :10:38.of the British athletes gets away to a good start. Very good start

:10:38. > :10:41.indeed, considering the false start, she was well out of the block,, you

:10:41. > :10:47.were saying these 100 hurdles are seeded. Karolina Tyminska maybe

:10:47. > :10:52.could have been in a couple of races higher. A personal best going

:10:52. > :10:56.back, not far off that, and Austra Skujyte struggling a bit. A

:10:56. > :10:59.disappointing start for her, hitting that last hurdle. So we are

:10:59. > :11:03.hitting that last hurdle. So we are off and running here. Jess Ennis

:11:03. > :11:07.coming up in heat fivement one person who knows about winning

:11:07. > :11:17.Olympic Gold is Denise Lewis, she has been analysing what it will

:11:17. > :11:22.

:11:22. > :11:27.take for Jess Ennis to take the -- Jess Ennis has never had a chance

:11:27. > :11:31.to prove herself on the biggest stage. A fractured foot meant she

:11:31. > :11:36.couldn't compete in Beijing and in intervening yearss she has had to

:11:36. > :11:41.work hard to attain world indoor and outdoor success. So, can she

:11:41. > :11:47.pull it off? Here is our guide to our strengths and weaknesses. In

:11:47. > :11:50.May, Jess beat my British heptathlon record in Austria. And,

:11:50. > :11:57.made some significant improvements to some events that will make the

:11:57. > :12:02.difference here in London. In the 200m she set a new personal best of

:12:02. > :12:06.22.88, compare that with her season east best times over the past three

:12:06. > :12:12.year and you can see she has knocked nearly half a second off

:12:12. > :12:15.since 2009. That time is looking good when compared with the PBs of

:12:16. > :12:19.her two main competitors, Tatyana Chernova, who is nearly three-

:12:19. > :12:26.quarters of a second slower and Natalia Dobrynska, who is almost a

:12:26. > :12:33.second and a-and-a-half behind her pace P The 200m looks a safe bet

:12:33. > :12:38.but the javelin is where she will have to be at her best. She is 5' 5

:12:38. > :12:47.in height compared with Tatyana Chernova and Natalia Dobrynska who

:12:47. > :12:52.are taller. In Austria Jess through a Berneal best of 47.11. A good

:12:52. > :12:55.through considering she only posted 39.95 in Daegu which cost her the

:12:55. > :12:59.gold medal. It is unlikely she will beat Natalia Dobrynska and Tatyana

:12:59. > :13:04.Chernova here. Their personal bests dwarf hers, especially Tatyana

:13:04. > :13:08.Chernova, who excels in this event. Her best throw is over seven metres

:13:09. > :13:14.further. So Jess needs to stay as close as possible to her

:13:14. > :13:20.competitors, in the javelin, and the long jump. Again, in Austria

:13:20. > :13:26.she posted her best ever jump of 6.51 but that was still way off the

:13:26. > :13:32.other two. Tatyana Chernova leads the way with 6.82, although she

:13:32. > :13:36.only managed 6.05 at the Russian championships. It is important to

:13:36. > :13:40.remember that Jess does excel in the high jump, hurdles and the 200

:13:40. > :13:50.meters and if she match hers personal best in the long jump and

:13:50. > :14:00.

:14:00. > :14:10.javelin it maybe enough to secure first 100m hurdles. Karolina

:14:10. > :14:19.

:14:19. > :14:29.have a non-starter on the inside, that is Margaret Simpson, former

:14:29. > :14:38.

:14:38. > :14:42.bronze medallist at the World defending Olympic champion. Tragedy

:14:42. > :14:46.struck her when her husband and coach died earlier in the year, but,

:14:46. > :14:56.by all accounts starting to get back-in to pretty good form, and

:14:56. > :14:57.

:14:57. > :15:03.she should not be written off. Eliska Klucinova. Pretty good

:15:03. > :15:08.javelin thrower. This nail thing is very popular, we are getting the

:15:08. > :15:13.flag nail paints. They are available all over the village.

:15:13. > :15:21.Your national flag very popular. Broersen, there is a Dutch high

:15:21. > :15:31.jump champion. Car poe have a. Not one of her bests, dipped under 14

:15:31. > :15:38.

:15:38. > :15:47.seconds this year. The French number two. Natalia Dobrynska, has

:15:47. > :15:56.had a lot to contend with, but she is a redoubtable competitor. Very

:15:56. > :16:01.strong. She doesn't always join the hurdle, she has a best of 13.4 but

:16:01. > :16:05.this year only one 13.9. Conditions really good. Conducive to the

:16:05. > :16:15.athletes running quick, which has to be good news for Jess Ennis,

:16:15. > :16:33.

:16:33. > :16:37.this is the event she wants to kick four. They get away safely. Natalia

:16:37. > :16:41.Dobrynska, say it reasonable start, she is leading this one. Broersen

:16:41. > :16:45.going with her from Netherlands. Natalia Dobrynska holds it together

:16:45. > :16:50.here, say it good performance, fading a bit. She gets it from

:16:50. > :16:55.Broersen. 13.58. That is a big improvement, and I said you should

:16:55. > :17:03.never write this lady off. Wasn't that far outside her personal best

:17:03. > :17:05.to be Monday nest, so that is a good start for her. Colin? That was

:17:05. > :17:10.an excellent start by Natalia Dobrynska, I don't think anybody

:17:10. > :17:14.was expecting that. She has gone four tenths of a second faster than

:17:14. > :17:18.se has run all season, all her opponents will be watching her

:17:18. > :17:22.carefully. He is in lane two for us. She gets away to a really good

:17:22. > :17:26.explosive start. Of course, she is the power athlete. Her second day

:17:26. > :17:33.is very strong indeed. But this is an exceptional performance for her.

:17:34. > :17:37.And she obviously wants to hang on to this title. Out the block,

:17:37. > :17:44.drives hard into the first hurdle. Gets up right very well indeed.

:17:44. > :17:49.What she does then, is focus on the barrier, she keeps her head level,

:17:49. > :17:54.flat and straight. She makes room beautifully for the barriers, as

:17:54. > :17:58.far as I am concerned this is a very good strong powerful start for

:17:59. > :18:08.Natalia Dobrynska. Everybody is sur pruesed with this, the wind speed,

:18:09. > :18:18.

:18:18. > :18:24.well within the allowable limit. A aggressive out of the blocks. You

:18:24. > :18:31.can see how her head level stays the same. She runs into the line,

:18:31. > :18:37.and I think she will be happy with that.

:18:37. > :18:47.The defending Olympic champion of Poland, traditional linear

:18:47. > :18:49.

:18:49. > :18:57.technique. And over that qualifier in line, said at 20 metres 65. A

:18:57. > :19:04.very steady start for him. We have just seen two rotational throws,

:19:04. > :19:14.but this is the technique that won the Olympic title for many years.

:19:14. > :19:23.This man won the Olympic title in Beijing four years ago. A solid

:19:23. > :19:28.start. These guys know each other very well, and that is 21 metres

:19:28. > :19:36.and three centimetres, the longest throw we have seen this morning.

:19:36. > :19:46.very good run from the Dobrynska, that is a good start to the defence

:19:46. > :20:04.

:20:04. > :20:14.heptathlete from Birchfield Harriers, going in heat No. 3,

:20:14. > :20:19.

:20:19. > :20:25.running in lane five. Jennifer Oeser running next to her, very

:20:25. > :20:30.tall, a pretty good high jumper. Louise Hazel has come from a long

:20:30. > :20:40.line of tremendous multi-eventer as from Birchfield Harriers. Denise

:20:40. > :21:05.

:21:05. > :21:14.Lewis, Kelly Sotherton, Judy through these heats, will get

:21:14. > :21:23.tougher. Louise Hazel, a season's best of 13.421. A Commonwealth

:21:23. > :21:33.Games gold medallist in New Delhi. Totally focusing on the turn

:21:33. > :21:35.

:21:35. > :21:41.barriers that lay ahead of her. Goodness only knows what the

:21:41. > :21:51.reception of Jessica Ennis will be like. That was staggering on this

:21:51. > :21:54.

:21:54. > :22:04.first of track and field athletics. Jennifer Oeser of Germany, the

:22:04. > :22:12.

:22:12. > :22:22.season's best of 13.4 this season. Grabuste, European Under 23

:22:22. > :22:34.

:22:34. > :22:44.champion. Louise Hazel, anxious to get off to a confident start here.

:22:44. > :22:52.

:22:52. > :23:02.On paper, her season's best is the best of any of these athletes, 13.

:23:02. > :23:03.

:23:03. > :23:09.22, the best time of Tyminska would be worth 1000 points. Louise Hazel

:23:09. > :23:19.into the set position very smartly, and she and Samuel Cern are getting

:23:19. > :23:25.

:23:25. > :23:29.away nicely. Louise Hazel has just been caught a little bit, Sprunger

:23:29. > :23:35.coming through on the inside. She was leading, but she started to

:23:35. > :23:41.fade a little bit as the race went on. Interesting to see what her

:23:41. > :23:49.time is, Colin? I think everyone will be interested, especially

:23:49. > :23:54.herself. It was a competent run by the winner, ultimately. A time of

:23:54. > :24:00.13.31. Following the trail led through as she moves away, the

:24:00. > :24:06.Ukrainian. Set a time just outside her personal best so it is a great

:24:06. > :24:11.start, but Louise just fading into fourth place. I think she will be a

:24:11. > :24:15.little bit disappointed with that. Another great angle - you can see

:24:15. > :24:20.how the ladies explode off the blocks and work hard into the

:24:20. > :24:30.barrier. It is early morning for these ladies to be out there

:24:30. > :24:34.hurdling. They know what they have to do but sometimes it can be

:24:35. > :24:39.difficult for different athlete. Head-on with Louise Hazel. Remember,

:24:39. > :24:49.she is a competent hurdler, fourth in the UK Championships so she

:24:49. > :24:51.

:24:51. > :24:55.knows the event very well indeed. There was a massive roar that came

:24:55. > :25:05.from the crowd as she appeared on the track, I hope that didn't put

:25:05. > :25:18.

:25:18. > :25:27.her off. A season's best and personal best for Melnychenko. That

:25:27. > :25:30.gives Louise Hazel 1053 points, the best time she has run this year.

:25:30. > :25:37.Louise Hazel has the honour of being the first British athlete on

:25:37. > :25:42.the track here in 2012. Am delighted to say Denise Lewis has

:25:42. > :25:48.brought some much-needed glamour to the studio. The nervous Denise

:25:48. > :25:58.Lewis, I think it is fair to say? didn't sleep a wink. I have waited

:25:58. > :25:59.

:25:59. > :26:04.for this day. It is so exciting to see three British heptathletes. It

:26:04. > :26:09.is so exciting, a great day and hopefully Jessica Ennis will have a

:26:09. > :26:19.great hurdles. A very dispassionate analysis we saw on the videotape,

:26:19. > :26:27.it is different when you step into the stadium. This place will erupt.

:26:27. > :26:31.Everyone knows what this day means to Jessica, her friends, her family.

:26:31. > :26:37.The British supporters want to see her doing well so the roof will

:26:37. > :26:43.literally be blown off. There is nothing you can really do to

:26:43. > :26:48.prepare yourself, Michael. The journey into the unknown. If I

:26:48. > :26:55.think you can actually. Jessica will have that attitude... You know,

:26:55. > :27:01.there has been so much talk about her. There will be all of this

:27:01. > :27:06.support and an athlete can prepare themselves for that. You know what,

:27:06. > :27:11.I have got to come in here and not let that affect me, not even

:27:11. > :27:17.attempt to soak that in. I have got to be focused on the events I am

:27:17. > :27:21.going to take part in and focus on the execution, and spend that time

:27:21. > :27:26.visualising myself executing to perfection. That is what Jessica

:27:26. > :27:30.will be focused on. On the other hand, Louise Hazel is the type of

:27:30. > :27:35.athlete who will soak that all and perform well because of that

:27:35. > :27:40.because that is the type of personality she has. An athlete

:27:40. > :27:47.will perform depending on how best they respond to the pressure and

:27:47. > :27:56.the crowd. Next, a big moment for Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Paul

:27:56. > :28:06.Dickenson describing this one. The fourth heat, and the line-up

:28:06. > :28:11.

:28:11. > :28:21.looks like this. Katarina Johnson- Thompson, the 19 year-old former

:28:21. > :28:25.

:28:25. > :28:32.Great Britain in ninth May. -- in lane nine. She has already had a

:28:32. > :28:38.stellar junior career and who knows what the future holds for her. The

:28:38. > :28:43.world junior champion in the long jump. Full of talent, ability, and

:28:43. > :28:50.confidence. She has a lovely character and I think she is made

:28:50. > :29:00.for this sort of Arena. Unbelievable. It makes their hairs

:29:00. > :29:00.

:29:01. > :29:10.stand on the back of your neck. Then a moment of quiet just to

:29:11. > :29:17.

:29:17. > :29:27.focus on the job at hand. Katarina Johnson-Thompson's best is 13.48.

:29:27. > :29:35.

:29:35. > :29:45.Ukrainian in main five picked up a medal in Helsinki. -- in lane five.

:29:45. > :29:46.

:29:46. > :29:51.That is a false start. It looked like the Estonian in lane six. Get

:29:51. > :29:57.used to this on the first morning, because we have the preliminary

:29:58. > :30:01.round of the women's 100m which will certainly see a lot if

:30:01. > :30:06.inexperience athletes. In that event they will not be allowed to

:30:06. > :30:16.have a false start, it is a straightforward disqualification.

:30:16. > :30:21.

:30:21. > :30:31.Not in the heptathlon though, it will be a warning. She looks a

:30:31. > :30:34.

:30:34. > :30:39.little nervous, but so you should be. 19 years old. This experience

:30:39. > :30:49.will stand her in such good stead for the future, but she wants to

:30:49. > :31:09.

:31:09. > :31:14.Thompson get a reasonable start. She is now going a little bit

:31:14. > :31:24.better, and it will be close on the line. It is the Ukrainian who wins

:31:24. > :31:28.it. She had a very good European Championships, the Ukrainian. It is

:31:28. > :31:36.a decent start from Johnson- Thompson, might be a little bit

:31:36. > :31:46.down on her personal best. Very tight on the line, just one

:31:46. > :31:50.

:31:50. > :31:55.hundredth between first and second. Yosypenko, a big new personal best.

:31:55. > :32:04.Let's have a look at this. stores are very interesting race

:32:04. > :32:09.because people exploded out of the blocks. Mistakes, they clipped them,

:32:09. > :32:19.but overall the Ukrainian held her head together and took the dip

:32:19. > :32:19.

:32:19. > :32:24.right at the end. This young lady has a massive, massive future it

:32:24. > :32:29.indeed. We mentioned this clearly right at the top that we thought

:32:29. > :32:33.Jessica was great as a junior, but Johnson-Thompson is an exceptional

:32:33. > :32:38.junior athlete and she will only get better and better. A very

:32:38. > :32:48.competent hurdler, a beautiful room, and she ends up with a personal

:32:48. > :32:58.best - 13.48. She will be pleased with that. What a start that would

:32:58. > :33:03.

:33:03. > :33:08.be for Jessica Ennis, of course. perfect in the stadium. Jess

:33:08. > :33:16.looking very sharp. But all of her main rival, well all of her main

:33:16. > :33:20.rivals bar one, I think, are in this particular heat. You saw

:33:20. > :33:29.Karolina Tyminska, to be fair Jennifer Oeser the German as well.

:33:29. > :33:34.In this final heat of heptathlon we have Fountain. Number one American.

:33:34. > :33:39.We have Jessica Zelinka, the fastest hurdler on display here

:33:39. > :33:42.this morning. Canadian who has entered in the sprint hurdles but

:33:42. > :33:52.she has had one or two injury problem, we will be going on the

:33:52. > :33:52.

:33:52. > :33:56.inside. Former European champion Nana Djimou Ida, from France.

:33:56. > :34:05.Jessica's nearest rival in heptathlon terms Tatyana Chernova,

:34:06. > :34:11.the Russian. Only three men have so far gone beyond the qualifying line.

:34:11. > :34:16.Three of the biggest names, what can Colin Myerscough do here? Giant

:34:16. > :34:26.of a man, doesn't always produce his best in major championships

:34:26. > :34:27.

:34:27. > :34:34.though and not on this occasion either. Well, he doesn't portray

:34:34. > :34:40.much emotion, Colin Myerscough. But he may well just to find something

:34:41. > :34:44.a little bit extra here. So far, 12 best throw also go through to the

:34:44. > :34:53.final, if there aren't 12 beyond that qualifying line, which at the

:34:53. > :35:01.minute that is not looking likely, he prove. That is not good at all.

:35:01. > :35:10.18.75 and then 18.95. So much expectation on the slender

:35:10. > :35:20.shoulders of Jessica Ennis from the city of Sheffield club. Here is the

:35:20. > :35:38.

:35:38. > :35:44.start list for the final heat of Zelinka. She won the Canadian

:35:44. > :35:51.individual hurdles title this years beating some superb opposition,

:35:51. > :35:55.12.68. Lifetime best set this year. Nana Djimou Ida. She is a 13.11

:35:55. > :36:05.performer, had a birthday yesterday. And she is a former European

:36:05. > :36:08.

:36:08. > :36:18.outdoor champion. Brianne Theisen. Number two Canadian. Number two to

:36:18. > :36:26.Jessica Zelinka. Uhunoma Osazuwa. The Nigerian record holder. Does

:36:26. > :36:29.most of her training and competing in the United States. A very tall

:36:29. > :36:39.figure of Tatyana Chernova. World World Champion and Olympic bronze

:36:39. > :36:43.

:36:44. > :36:48.hamstring injury in the European Championships last year but she is

:36:48. > :36:58.a useful all rounder. But the biggest cheer of all will be

:36:58. > :37:04.

:37:04. > :37:09.reserved for this lady. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Jessica Ennis has got

:37:10. > :37:14.the potential to set this stadium alight. Hyleas Fountain, 12.86,

:37:14. > :37:21.lifetime best, and the Olympic silver medallist four years ago, so

:37:21. > :37:31.set a personal best in the hurdles, actually in that Bird's Nest

:37:31. > :37:42.

:37:42. > :37:52.Stadium. But for Jess Ennis, her and this is one of her favourite

:37:52. > :38:08.

:38:08. > :38:11.hopes it stars Jess Ennis of Great Jessica Ennis has been closed down

:38:11. > :38:16.by Sara Aerts. Now she is beginning to pull away on the inside. Jessica

:38:16. > :38:26.Zelinka is going well this is a tremendous run, by Jessica Ennis.

:38:26. > :38:29.

:38:29. > :38:36.Oh my goodness. Wow! The fastest time ever. By a he want Leith any

:38:36. > :38:42.multi-eventer, a new British record. It is legal. 1.3 metres a second.

:38:42. > :38:48.Oh! The power of the crowd carried Jess Ennis through to that time.

:38:48. > :38:56.And the rest of her come pelt fors must be in despair, seeing how fast

:38:56. > :39:01.the British athlete has just run. - - competitors. My goodness, Colin.

:39:01. > :39:05.That is an understatement. She drove out the blocks, she has a

:39:05. > :39:10.real understanding of this. runs a lot on the circuit. She

:39:10. > :39:15.knows the distance, what it is like getting close to the barrier, she

:39:15. > :39:21.no what it is like to compete against the best, that time of

:39:21. > :39:26.12.54 second would put her in the piedge. I tell you what Colin, the

:39:26. > :39:29.greatest heptathlete in history the world record holder and the Olympic

:39:29. > :39:35.record holder is in the stadium and even she would have been very very

:39:35. > :39:39.impressed with that run. G It was incredible. It was more than

:39:39. > :39:44.outstanding. You are talking about she setting a British record during

:39:44. > :39:48.a heptathlon event. She was strong, she was aggressive, she was focused.

:39:48. > :39:55.She was fast, she was deliberate in every movement over those barrier,

:39:55. > :40:01.and this is what happens when you get all those elements right. Fast

:40:01. > :40:05.time, a British record, and of course, sets her up beautifully for

:40:05. > :40:09.this Olympic title. Wonderful wonderful Jess Ennis, watch this.

:40:09. > :40:14.Explodes out the block, she knows as he comes into the straights, he

:40:14. > :40:17.is not the fastest on paper, she knows there are women who have run

:40:18. > :40:23.quicker but no messing about. She grabs the lead, and about half way,

:40:23. > :40:29.and believes in herself, she pushes on and drives to that line and gets

:40:29. > :40:39.rewarded with a phenomenal, and I can't underestimate when I say a

:40:39. > :40:39.

:40:39. > :40:42.phenomenal personal best. Look at that. Two hundredths of a second

:40:42. > :40:50.off the national record set by Tiffany Porter. Jessica Zelinka was

:40:50. > :40:54.one of the fastest of all time. Hyleas Fountain the Olympic silver

:40:54. > :40:59.medallist, and where is Tatyana Chernova, she is down in eighth

:40:59. > :41:09.place. That is almost a full second behind Jessica Ennis what a start

:41:09. > :41:13.

:41:13. > :41:19.start, this is the result of the previous heat. Yosypenko, good

:41:19. > :41:23.beginning for her competition. Katarina Johnson-Thompson as we

:41:23. > :41:28.mentioned earlier equaling her personal best in fourth place so a

:41:28. > :41:32.brilliant start for the British heptathletes. There is still a buzz

:41:32. > :41:37.going round this stadium, because of what has happened here over the

:41:37. > :41:46.last five minutes. If Jess Ennis can continue in that sort of form,

:41:46. > :41:52.nobody will touch her for the gold medal. Early days yet. But what a

:41:52. > :41:59.start by the Briton. Jessica Ennis leads. That is a huge, huge points

:41:59. > :42:06.total for Jess. Jess number two, Jessica Zelinka from Canada.

:42:07. > :42:11.Tatyana Chernova is well done the Tatyana Chernova is well done the

:42:11. > :42:16.table. -- down the table. Steve Cram has calmed down. -- Steve

:42:16. > :42:20.Cram's calm down might fall on deaf ears in the studio. That was

:42:20. > :42:25.incredible. We talked about pressure, an event like hurdles is

:42:25. > :42:30.so conducive to having that energy, you can use it, it translates in,

:42:30. > :42:35.your attack out of the block, and I am just blown away by that time. We

:42:35. > :42:40.knew Jessica had more in her, we have felt she has underperformed in

:42:40. > :42:46.hurdles what a day, what a day to show the world just exactly what

:42:46. > :42:50.she is capable of. Great start. Fantastic start. A fantastic start.

:42:50. > :42:56.And what an incredible time Mike. I mean, two tenth faster than

:42:56. > :43:00.anything we could have thought. More than two tenths off her

:43:00. > :43:04.personal best. She is ready to go, understanding what is ahead of her,

:43:04. > :43:11.knowing she would have to got off to a great start this is incredible.

:43:11. > :43:15.This is the most solid race I have serve seen run, she got a little

:43:15. > :43:20.competition but she responded incredibly well, a solid race from

:43:20. > :43:25.start to finish. A great, unbelievable start from her here

:43:25. > :43:29.and just really crisp, solid over each barrier. The start that she

:43:29. > :43:33.needed to get this going, as I said before, today is the day for her,

:43:34. > :43:37.she has to get a huge lead. She has put incredible pressure on the rest

:43:38. > :43:43.of the girls. We know she has been desperately trying to get that

:43:43. > :43:47.first foot down out of block, to maximum effect. So far we haven't

:43:47. > :43:51.quite seen it. But daid she delivered it. She has had a

:43:51. > :43:56.fantastic training camp. Everyone has gone as well as can be expected

:43:56. > :44:00.and she has turned up here in shape. First class hurdling technique,

:44:00. > :44:04.great solid mind, you know, the mind she must have, to be able to

:44:04. > :44:08.deliver that on day like this is sensational. Only one event of

:44:08. > :44:13.seven. What advice do you give her now, she has done something which I

:44:13. > :44:17.am sure has shocked her. That is the challenge for all the

:44:17. > :44:21.heptathletes, almost to leave the baggage behind. Whether it has been

:44:21. > :44:27.fantastic or bad, you have to leave it behind. You have to refocus for

:44:27. > :44:33.the high jump and use the energy of the crowd for that event. Michael,

:44:33. > :44:38.she does need to calm down a bit as Crammy said. Get it into context.

:44:38. > :44:41.The celebrations can come after if she gets the gold medalment Jess

:44:42. > :44:46.will handle it well. She will go on to the next event. What she will do

:44:46. > :44:51.is take that as a huge positive. Now she has a huge lead already

:44:51. > :44:55.after one event. I think she will take that into the next event,

:44:55. > :44:57.understanding this was a great performance, she will want the keep

:44:57. > :45:01.that lead, especially to the end of today, because tomorrow is going to

:45:02. > :45:11.be a bit more of a challenge. a start, now back to the

:45:12. > :45:17.

:45:17. > :45:22.triple jump qualifying has starreded. A terrific start for the

:45:22. > :45:31.British number one. 14 metres 40 is what is required to take them

:45:31. > :45:41.through to the final on Sunday. Nobody has got to grips with the

:45:41. > :45:48.

:45:48. > :45:57.conditions yet. Leading jump so far the Ukraine and she has the leading

:45:57. > :46:00.jump so far. Yamile Aldama, she is in the final. Plenty more tho come

:46:00. > :46:03.from the stadium. What an amazing start, but for the moment it is

:46:03. > :46:07.start, but for the moment it is back to Michelle in the studio.

:46:07. > :46:10.Thank you very much. Yamile Aldama nearly 40 years old, mother of two

:46:10. > :46:15.and what a great performance from Jessica Ennis, now we see why she

:46:15. > :46:20.has become known as the Golden Girl of British athletic, she delivered

:46:20. > :46:25.that event, the 100m hurdle is one of her favourite events, what a way

:46:25. > :46:28.to go on to the next bit of the the heptathlon. It looked perfect in

:46:28. > :46:32.the stadium this morning, not just the sport but the conditions. Let

:46:32. > :46:37.us see what it is like at Eton Dorney, because we have a crucial

:46:37. > :46:41.couple of hours in the rowing coming up. So let us join John and

:46:41. > :46:45.Steve. The sun they have got in the stadium has deserted us here. These

:46:45. > :46:49.are shots from a few moment ago, now we have cloud cover and strong

:46:49. > :46:55.cross winds, as you can see, which has meant at the draw for the lane

:46:55. > :47:00.draw, for the finals that is coming up, including Katherine Grainger

:47:00. > :47:05.and Anna Watkins in the women's double scull has been redrawn. I

:47:05. > :47:11.have David Tainer with me. What are the conditions like? How bad is

:47:11. > :47:15.that wind? It is pretty strong. It is blowing diagonally across the

:47:15. > :47:18.course, and so you have half a head wind and half a cross wind. The

:47:18. > :47:22.side of the course we are stood on now, is likely to be favoured,

:47:22. > :47:27.sheltered from the wind and with less waves as well. This was the

:47:27. > :47:32.issue yesterday, that caused a lot of controversy with the men's

:47:32. > :47:37.lightweight four who felt they had a bit of a rough deal. Is this the

:47:37. > :47:41.organising body bolting the door after the horse has gone. Yesterday

:47:41. > :47:45.was different. The wind was more directly across and fluctuating

:47:45. > :47:49.between the tail and head wine. Do you put them on this side for a

:47:49. > :47:53.head wind or the other for a tail wind? That is the dilemma, what

:47:53. > :47:59.they should have done is say we don't know what it is going to be,

:47:59. > :48:03.it is unfair. So we will delay racing, today it is a bit more of

:48:03. > :48:06.head wind so it is more oven it is this side, it is not fluctuating as

:48:06. > :48:16.much so that is why they feel they can allocate the lanes from that

:48:16. > :48:19.

:48:19. > :48:22.They have delayed racing by half- an-hour, so many of the races are

:48:22. > :48:28.on in half-an-hour behind schedule but we think the main finals will

:48:28. > :48:35.be on time. David, we will speak more in the second but let's go

:48:35. > :48:45.over to Matthew Pinsent. I have the lane drawer. The finals are

:48:45. > :49:01.

:49:01. > :49:11.unchanged. 11:30am, the men -- men's quad. That moves from here

:49:11. > :49:17.over to lane two. The men's pair goes into lane five, a big

:49:17. > :49:24.improvement from them. The women's double moves into lane five, so one

:49:24. > :49:29.closer to their main opposition. The best lane will be Australia.

:49:29. > :49:39.Men's single, Alan Campbell, goes the wrong way into lane three so

:49:39. > :49:41.

:49:41. > :49:48.they are definitely accepting the quickest lanes are on this side.

:49:48. > :49:54.Matthew was going through the redraws. Alan Campbell will be

:49:54. > :50:00.disappointed to have been moved into lane three, would you agree

:50:00. > :50:05.with that? He will be. He was second in the semi-final, so he has

:50:06. > :50:13.come the wrong side of that, if you like. On the previous draw he could

:50:13. > :50:17.have been in lane two, which he would have been less happy with.

:50:17. > :50:22.purely technical terms, it is a bit like Horseracing being drawn on the

:50:22. > :50:29.wrong side of the course. On one side of the course you have no

:50:29. > :50:34.chance, on the other side you have. What margins are we talking about?

:50:34. > :50:43.From one lane to the next you are talking about probably a couple of

:50:43. > :50:48.feet difference. From lane one to lane six, you are probably talking

:50:48. > :50:55.about a length difference. The ones who have qualified best and next to

:50:55. > :50:59.each other, so likely there is not much difference from one lane to

:50:59. > :51:08.another, but it is how you approach it mentally which is the problem.

:51:08. > :51:13.Some people will think "o god, I am in the wrong lane". He can't see

:51:13. > :51:19.this as a disadvantage. He has got to think about trying harder, if he

:51:19. > :51:29.can, because you know what he is like! If you feel like you have the

:51:29. > :51:30.

:51:30. > :51:36.disadvantage, you will go slower because of it. Does it affect

:51:36. > :51:42.Katherine Grainger and Anna Watson? I am certain it will not faze them

:51:42. > :51:46.in any way. They will be pleased that if people feel it is less fair

:51:46. > :51:52.on the other side and they are in the right place, they will be fine.

:51:52. > :51:59.At the end of the day, it is an outdoor sport. I believe they make

:51:59. > :52:04.the right judgement and am sure they will be positive whatever lane

:52:04. > :52:09.they are in. How were they at breakfast this morning? I was out

:52:09. > :52:15.jogging when I have my breakfast so I didn't see them but they were in

:52:15. > :52:18.a great place last night when I saw them. They will be good to go, no-

:52:18. > :52:25.holds-barred and determined to win the gold medal. Were you will be

:52:25. > :52:31.back with you in... I always look at the clock on the boat house, it

:52:31. > :52:38.is so big - we will be back with you in about 30 minutes.

:52:38. > :52:46.Don't forget, there was another one of the early lunch times required

:52:46. > :52:50.because the race is at 10 past 12. We are concentrating on athletics

:52:50. > :52:56.at the moment because it has been a fantastic start of the day inside

:52:56. > :53:00.the stadium. Let's get back in there. What a great start, Jonathan,

:53:00. > :53:07.from Jessica Ennis. That time was the same as the gold medal-winning

:53:07. > :53:12.performance in Beijing in the 100m women's hurdles.

:53:12. > :53:19.We are amazed here. As you say, that statistic from Beijing, and I

:53:19. > :53:24.don't think any of us can't quite believe what she did. It was beyond

:53:24. > :53:30.the stuff of dreams really, in terms of the start for the golden

:53:30. > :53:35.girl of these Olympic Games. Absolutely, and I couldn't agree

:53:35. > :53:40.more. To come here and deliver a performance of that colour other,

:53:40. > :53:45.it just puts it into perspective why she is so popular and why we

:53:45. > :53:48.have every confidence that she can deliver in this stadium because she

:53:48. > :53:56.has to have nerves of steel to be able to cope with everything that

:53:56. > :54:05.has been put in front of her. It was an excellent performance.

:54:05. > :54:09.happens now? High jump at 11:15am, although Jessica will not come in

:54:10. > :54:15.until a little later than that, but it is a quick turnaround, isn't it?

:54:15. > :54:20.Yes, any baggage has to be put to bed. She doesn't want to carry that

:54:20. > :54:24.excitement into the high jump. She needs to refocus, think of the

:54:24. > :54:29.technical aspects and what she needs to do for that event. It is

:54:29. > :54:34.one of her best events, and what she wants to do is to lay down a

:54:34. > :54:40.big offer between herself and her next competitiveness and Chernova

:54:40. > :54:45.did not look good at all, as we saw. Dobrynska or started reasonably

:54:45. > :54:52.well, but they will have looked at that and thought... What would they

:54:52. > :55:02.have thought? Pack our shoes and let's go home. It is disheartening.

:55:02. > :55:04.

:55:04. > :55:09.Both of those competitors are tough. They will be focusing on their own

:55:09. > :55:15.personal bests. A word about Katarina Johnson-Thompson, she

:55:15. > :55:21.looked a bit nervous, didn't she? Before she looked nervous, she

:55:21. > :55:27.looked overwhelmed. Her reaction to the crowd was really cute, but then

:55:27. > :55:32.she almost went into, oh, I need to get focused here. It is great for

:55:32. > :55:39.her to get that type of support. She is trying to come here and have

:55:39. > :55:43.her best performance, whatever that may be. She will be happy as long

:55:43. > :55:49.as she can walk away feeling like she did a great performance. At the

:55:49. > :55:59.other great performance was in the women's triple jump and it is an

:55:59. > :56:02.amazing story. It is a heart- warming story. Jamil Has been

:56:02. > :56:07.through so much and she has been desperate to have an opportunity

:56:07. > :56:11.like this, to compete in the stadium and qualifying comfortably

:56:11. > :56:17.on her first jump. We have not spoken much about her in the lead-

:56:17. > :56:22.up to these games, but she is someone to watch. She was world

:56:22. > :56:26.indoor champion. She jumped way further than she had done for a lot

:56:26. > :56:33.of years. I think many people thought her career was petering out.

:56:33. > :56:39.She jumped 14.89 I think to win those world indoors. She has done

:56:39. > :56:43.the business, got the qualifying out of the way. She made automatic

:56:43. > :56:49.qualification with her first jump, and afterwards she spoke to Phil

:56:49. > :56:55.Jones. A fantastic for four months, the crowd amazing.

:56:55. > :57:01.How was the experience? This is my fifth Olympic Games and I have

:57:01. > :57:09.never experienced this crowd in the qualifying round. It is amazing.

:57:09. > :57:18.Normally it is not empty, but not like this. It is great. And euros

:57:18. > :57:23.to the occasion. A fine jump, and a safe jumper. Yes, I was not running

:57:23. > :57:30.as fast. I was a bit concerned because we had head wind, and the

:57:30. > :57:39.wind was changing, so I wanted to make sure. Are you feeling good?

:57:39. > :57:44.Yes, absolutely. And you also ran a fourth placed finish at the

:57:44. > :57:49.Olympics, a fifth place, now something better I hope? Well, we

:57:49. > :57:58.have to change that. We are going out on the track now for the

:57:58. > :58:03.women's 100m first round. The first ever female athlete from Qatar, a

:58:04. > :58:07.bit of history now. Yes, just 17 bit of history now. Yes, just 17

:58:07. > :58:13.years old and what an honour for her and her country. These

:58:13. > :58:23.preliminary rounds before the big guns, out, getting them to qualify

:58:23. > :58:28.

:58:28. > :58:33.for this evening. Just six teenagers in here. One of the

:58:34. > :58:40.athlete has pulled a hamstring, that is a tragic situation for her.

:58:40. > :58:46.Winning the race in 11 point 87. After being given the opportunity

:58:46. > :58:52.to come here and represent her country, it is a sad way for that

:58:52. > :58:56.to end. She did look rather nervous on the start line. She may be new

:58:56. > :59:06.she was carrying an injury coming into this and you could understand

:59:06. > :59:06.

:59:06. > :59:11.why she would want to at least give it a try. The tears now come for

:59:11. > :59:21.the youngster. What a pity. You could see from the start whatever

:59:21. > :59:23.

:59:23. > :59:28.injury she has been carrying, she wanted to give it a go and why not.

:59:28. > :59:31.Qatar athletics is growing and building, and they have been

:59:31. > :59:36.bidding for various championships including the World Championships

:59:36. > :59:45.and the Olympic Games. Obviously trying to encourage their female

:59:45. > :59:50.athletes to take part. A sad sight to see. Our Prime Minister has got

:59:50. > :59:55.a couple of great guest alongside him - Sally Gunnell. I saw her

:59:55. > :59:59.earlier in the week, and she was looking forward to the athletics of

:59:59. > :00:09.course. She is looking forward to Perri Shakes-Drayton and her

:00:09. > :00:37.

:00:37. > :00:42.attempt. Everyone is looking It cost Jessica Ennis, Katarina

:00:42. > :00:52.Johnson-Thompson, but it has not been going very well so far in the

:00:52. > :00:53.

:00:53. > :00:59.shot put. Carl Myerscough did not have a good first two rounds.

:00:59. > :01:04.Plenty of British support for him, who was off balance on that one.

:01:04. > :01:14.Needed to go beyond 20 metres at least, as he walked out on that

:01:14. > :01:15.

:01:15. > :01:25.third qualifying round. We will have no presence in the men's shot

:01:25. > :01:35.

:01:35. > :01:42.put final, which takes place this put is the next event for her. What

:01:42. > :01:46.the start for both of those athletes, and I am sure we will

:01:46. > :01:53.enjoy the experience of watching how she copes with the pressure. So

:01:53. > :02:03.far, so good. Just finding some shade. It is quite warm in the

:02:03. > :02:06.

:02:06. > :02:16.arena this morning. The men's shot put qualifying has already finished.

:02:16. > :02:16.

:02:16. > :03:02.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 91 seconds

:03:02. > :03:09.Reese Hoffa, who we saw earlier so full for the first morning of an

:03:09. > :03:19.athletics programme. There is the line up for the heat four of the

:03:19. > :03:35.

:03:35. > :03:45.we have a record for -- athlete is Wisil of papaya new gippy. There is

:03:45. > :03:48.

:03:48. > :03:55.she is. 11.49. -- guinea. That is a life, once in 2010 and once in this

:03:55. > :04:05.year as well. Alatoa there, 23 - year-old. Don't have any figures on

:04:05. > :04:11.her whatsoever. The slowest athlete in the field, who we do have

:04:11. > :04:21.figures for, Gezah, of Libya, just one lane outside of Alatoa, she is

:04:21. > :04:27.

:04:27. > :04:32.will make it through the first round this evening. Very slow start

:04:32. > :04:39.from some of athletes. Colley is going well. Look at this Wisil,

:04:39. > :04:46.racing away, so the second qualifying position goes to Colley

:04:46. > :04:50.of Gambia. Winning time 11.59, just a tenth of a second outside of a

:04:50. > :04:55.lifetime best. Any lessons to be learned for some of these athletes?

:04:55. > :04:58.It is, loads of lessons they are picking up from here. Just running

:04:58. > :05:07.in this stadium, a capacity crowd, most of these athletes would have

:05:07. > :05:11.never experienced that in their life, I am hopely are enjoying it.

:05:11. > :05:17.Wisil didn't get the best of the starts. She kept powering away from

:05:17. > :05:27.the field once she started. It was a nice performance from her. 11.6

:05:27. > :05:31.

:05:31. > :05:36.the winning time. She will be excellent first attempt, going

:05:36. > :05:42.through, straight away. Not having to worry about qualifying in the

:05:42. > :05:44.top 12 position. Got well over the distance required. That is an

:05:44. > :05:50.excellent performance from Kimberley Williams from Jamaica.

:05:50. > :05:55.That is the green light. 14.40 or mo gets you straight into the final.

:05:55. > :06:02.That is very much into her sort of personal best territory. He is a

:06:02. > :06:12.14.52 at best. That is a good -- she. That is a good really first

:06:12. > :06:12.

:06:12. > :06:17.round effort for Williams. Jamaica the most expensed of Trisha Smith

:06:17. > :06:26.as well. She joins Yamile Aldama. 14.53. That is a new personal best

:06:26. > :06:30.by a centimetres, that is a little surprising, but well done to her.

:06:30. > :06:33.But we saw Colin Myerscough finishing in 29th place in the shot

:06:33. > :06:39.put. Now he is downstairs with Phil put. Now he is downstairs with Phil

:06:39. > :06:42.Jones. I know you had set ou a lot of Olympics and waiting for in bun

:06:42. > :06:47.able to seize it this morning. Obviously a massive disappointment.

:06:47. > :06:51.I felt great out there. The crowd was amazing, I have never probably

:06:51. > :06:56.felt better going into a competition, but each throw I maybe

:06:56. > :07:00.tried a little too hard. I didn't connect with each one, something

:07:00. > :07:06.slightly went wrong and I didn't get one good one out I was capable,

:07:06. > :07:11.and you know, no words to describe the dispointment, but it was

:07:11. > :07:17.fantastic to be here. Amazing experience, you know, to compete

:07:17. > :07:21.here. You know, what can I say? is packed for a morning session. We

:07:21. > :07:27.have never experienced anything like it. Were the nefs greater than

:07:27. > :07:31.yuebl for you? -- nerves? Yes, the adrenaline is enormous I think that

:07:31. > :07:36.was, I didn't just quite relax enough and get it to click, you

:07:37. > :07:41.know, I probably just tried a bit too hard and it didn't come off.

:07:41. > :07:46.know how tough it was for do you get here to go from the European

:07:47. > :07:51.Championships in Estonia, were you trying to tap into that kind of

:07:51. > :07:56.energy? Yes, the energy was there, the power was there, so it is

:07:56. > :08:03.frustrating, you know, I felt like, I had something big in me, but I

:08:03. > :08:06.didn't, it didn't click. Thank you for talking to us. Disappointment

:08:06. > :08:15.there for Colin Myerscough. There is uninterrupted coverage on the

:08:15. > :08:19.red button. We are going to take a short break. For a moment, back to

:08:19. > :08:22.you. What an exciting start to the morning. One of the athletics

:08:22. > :08:26.highlights later on will be more of the heptathlon, Jessica Ennis will

:08:26. > :08:31.be in the high jump later on. The heats get under way in the next

:08:31. > :08:35.couple of minutes, ten minutes or so. Because she traditionally does

:08:35. > :08:39.well she will go a bit later on. Overon BBC Three there is live

:08:39. > :08:45.swimming for you right now, with Beijing bronze medallist David

:08:45. > :08:50.Davis, he is about to go in the 1500 metres heat. Now, some

:08:50. > :08:54.Morrowing and we have seen some famous fai -- faces, no shortage of

:08:54. > :09:00.celebrating royalty today, but as Eton Dorney, there is a doctor in

:09:00. > :09:07.the house, who has new found love of life on the water. Why don't we

:09:07. > :09:17.give it a quick burst to start off with? Blow the cobwebs away. Fine.

:09:17. > :09:33.

:09:33. > :09:38.Of all the thousands of rowing fans who have come to Dorney today, I

:09:38. > :09:44.think it is fair to say that Matt Smith and Sam Haul perhaps among

:09:44. > :09:47.the most passionate. Come on guy, or should I say Bert and Dickie.

:09:47. > :09:54.are among the most passionate. have a lot of excitement to see how

:09:54. > :10:00.it should really be done, after our... Butchering it. The reviews

:10:00. > :10:05.from the rowing fans of your efforts. Pitiful. I wasn't going to

:10:05. > :10:10.be that harsh. It was, even the boys down at leerpbd, trying to

:10:10. > :10:14.scull in hose old boats was a blooming nightmare. You did well

:10:14. > :10:18.there, language! It is harder than it look, I can say that. I thought

:10:18. > :10:23.rowing was about stamina and strength, but there is technique

:10:23. > :10:27.and balance, and we had about five days to try and emulate Olympic

:10:27. > :10:34.champions, which as I am sure you will know probably not quite enough

:10:34. > :10:39.time. Deeply unconvincing. Deeply. What I said is it's a lot easier to

:10:39. > :10:43.teach A&E actors to row than to teach rowers to act. We may have

:10:43. > :10:48.disproved that theory. I think the rowing community would disagree.

:10:48. > :10:53.What are you looking forward to today? The double sculling pair,

:10:53. > :10:57.Katherine Grainger and the single as well, because... Alan Campbell.

:10:57. > :11:01.We had brief times in single sculls and both of us made it about 20

:11:01. > :11:07.feet before we fell in, so I am very impressed to see how anyone

:11:07. > :11:12.can row a single scull down a 2,000 metre course without falling in,

:11:12. > :11:16.let alone at the pace. Are you ready for the Dorney roar? I am

:11:16. > :11:21.excited. It is strange. I don't know what to expect. Because it is

:11:21. > :11:25.such an unknown enty in an him pib final to me. Once in a lifetime. So

:11:25. > :11:33.yeah. A lot of noise. A lot of noise. Hopefully that should be

:11:33. > :11:37.something we can contribute to at least. Enjoy the day. Bert and

:11:37. > :11:42.Dickie! We will take you to dorn in a moment, because the first of the

:11:42. > :11:45.rogue finals four in all are happening, including that one

:11:46. > :11:50.involving Katherine Grainger. This is the day that the stadium has

:11:50. > :11:54.really come into its own. We have seen it burst into life. It is

:11:54. > :11:59.packed in there and they have had good reason to cheer. We have seen

:12:00. > :12:07.fantastic form from Jessica Ennis and lots more to come. What is next

:12:07. > :12:10.Jonathan? It is Dai Greene in the 400m hurtles. We will have an

:12:10. > :12:20.Olympic Stadium roar for him. He is the World Champion, I think he

:12:20. > :12:27.comes to London with one thing on his mind. Pride myself on hard work.

:12:27. > :12:37.Green will rise first time. Strong survival at the end. Doing

:12:37. > :12:37.

:12:37. > :12:42.everything I can to come away with the gold medal. I have to set my

:12:42. > :12:46.standards high. Dai Greene takes Britain's first gold of the

:12:47. > :12:51.championships P The vast majority of people will be cheering for any

:12:51. > :12:55.British athlete in there. It will be a scenario no-one has

:12:55. > :12:58.experienced before. It is going to be superb, it s and I think all the

:12:59. > :13:04.athletes are excited and they see it as a an opportunity, not

:13:04. > :13:10.something that is, you know, nerve- wracking or daunting, it is a

:13:10. > :13:14.massive opportunity for all athletes. As for you and your own

:13:14. > :13:18.personal preparations, you have had a tremendous last few race, you

:13:18. > :13:23.pleased where you are at? Yes, run very well on my last two outings, I

:13:23. > :13:27.have. I feel I have more to give. I seem to be moving forward, and I am

:13:27. > :13:31.fitter and stronger than three or four weeks' ago, I am eager to get

:13:31. > :13:36.on with thing, I will find my rhythm in three or four days. I

:13:36. > :13:41.pride myself on my hard work, I do. It shows, it does, when you have

:13:42. > :13:48.those rounds, the strong survive at the end and it was the case in day

:13:48. > :13:53.-- Daegu. Here is the chance for Green to seize the moment. Green

:13:53. > :13:57.wins for Britain P Hopefully it will be a similar result in London,

:13:57. > :14:02.I certainly feel as though there is nothing else I could have done to

:14:02. > :14:07.prepare, so that makes me happy. You when you look back on the year,

:14:07. > :14:11.you kept quiet about the knee problem you had and the surgery.

:14:11. > :14:16.How much of a worry was that and how pleased were you with the way

:14:16. > :14:22.you were able to rebound from it? It was difficult at the time, it

:14:22. > :14:26.was. Not being able to train when you wanted to. Having to start two-

:14:26. > :14:30.and-a-half months later. It was a similar tame frame I had last year

:14:30. > :14:34.from the Commonwealths to the start of the season. I knew if I could

:14:34. > :14:38.get into shape. Everything had to go well, it did. I couldn't allow

:14:38. > :14:40.for another lay off. There was a lot of pressure on the support

:14:40. > :14:44.staff. They did a fantastic job with me. I believed I could get

:14:44. > :14:48.there, but you know, you do have some harder days and the days when

:14:48. > :14:53.your knees hurt. It can be difficult, but it helps build your

:14:53. > :14:59.character as well, and I am happy to come through it and I have run a

:14:59. > :15:09.person al best in the last few week, if you had given me that a few

:15:09. > :15:12.

:15:12. > :15:17.moneys ago I would have taken your hand off. There is the matter of

:15:17. > :15:21.his puert Raikkonen rivalry friend, my enemy I call you out. You, you

:15:21. > :15:26.there with the bad thorn in your side. You there my friend with the

:15:26. > :15:30.winning air. Dai hasn't defeated Coulson all summer long but he is

:15:30. > :15:34.getting nearer. He has run especially all season. He hasn't

:15:34. > :15:38.improved too much but he hasn't dropped off. He has found a level

:15:38. > :15:42.and he is consistent. I know he will have noticed I have been

:15:42. > :15:46.chipping away at him, getting closer, but in the last few World

:15:46. > :15:49.Championships he has picked up a couple of silvers. I know he will

:15:49. > :15:53.be desperate to get the gold in London. I will be able to do my

:15:53. > :16:02.best. I have a lot of respect for him. Hopefully I can turn the

:16:02. > :16:05.tables on him. You want that gold again? Yes, in the winter you don't

:16:05. > :16:10.think I am going to run thup hill to get that blons. Being World

:16:10. > :16:14.Champion last year I have to set my standards high. I am number two in

:16:14. > :16:18.the world this year at the moment, I am doing everything I can to come

:16:18. > :16:26.away with a gold medal. That has been my aim. You will have to ask

:16:26. > :16:29.me later on if I am happy. One thing is you are guaranteed you

:16:29. > :16:33.will get everything on the track he will produce when it matters. I

:16:33. > :16:37.don't think there is any real concern he won't respond. He will

:16:37. > :16:43.respond. I think he will have a great merfor -- performance, I

:16:43. > :16:48.think he will have his personal best. His problem will be Coulson.

:16:48. > :16:52.Disclaimer, I represent Coulson. You have a vested interest. But he

:16:52. > :16:55.has been so consistent over the last few year, silver medallist in

:16:55. > :17:00.Berlin, last year behind Dai. This year, I think the biggest problem

:17:00. > :17:03.for Dai is going to be that he ran his personal best and lost to

:17:03. > :17:08.Coulson, that is tough when you have your personal best, because

:17:08. > :17:13.then you are saying what do I have to do? On the other hand he is such

:17:13. > :17:16.a tough competitor, he trains hard, he has unbelievable confidence.

:17:16. > :17:21.Believes he can compete against anyone he won't be intimidated by

:17:21. > :17:24.Coulson, he will come out focused today, ready to go and work on his

:17:24. > :17:29.race through each round. He will be in the mix in the finals but the

:17:29. > :17:36.hurdles is one of the toughest events in athletics right now.

:17:36. > :17:40.Entered in the 400 hurdles is Angelo Taylor. Two times World

:17:40. > :17:44.Champion Clement. The South African. Commonwealth Games champion. Gordon

:17:44. > :17:49.from Trinidad. There is so many great athletes. So many champions

:17:49. > :17:52.in this race, that it will be tough just to get a medal. OK. You

:17:52. > :17:57.represent Coulson as you said. Give me an objective answer. He hasn't

:17:57. > :18:01.won a big title before, how well will he respond to the pressure?

:18:01. > :18:06.will respond really well, because he, he has been so close so many

:18:06. > :18:10.time, he has been silver medallist two times, and now he has been

:18:10. > :18:16.undediabetes -- defeated this year. He has beaten everybody. So he is

:18:16. > :18:20.very confident. It is funy I saw a little Jedi mind trick I was trying

:18:20. > :18:24.to play, Coulson has the pressure on him, I don't have the pressure,

:18:24. > :18:29.his country, no-one has won an Olympic gold medal, so he has that

:18:29. > :18:32.pressure, I was thinking "That is pretty good." At the end of the day

:18:32. > :18:37.both guys will feel the pressure because they want to win. I think

:18:37. > :18:40.that Coulson is in a great position, because he is, you know, he has won

:18:40. > :18:43.everything, he has beaten everybody, he comes in here with a tremendous

:18:43. > :18:53.amount of confidence but nobody is going to give him anything. We are

:18:53. > :18:59.

:18:59. > :19:03.talking about those two guys, but That is coming up on BBC Three, but

:19:03. > :19:08.for the moment, back to you, Michelle.

:19:08. > :19:12.We haven't shown you swimming yet today and to his time to show you a

:19:12. > :19:17.glimpse of what is happening in the aquatic centre right now because

:19:17. > :19:27.David Davies is going in the 1,500m so let's see how that is going for

:19:27. > :19:45.

:19:45. > :19:55.medals and he is amongst the best. He will be shooting for the gold,

:19:55. > :20:09.

:20:09. > :20:15.but not many people in the swimming fraternity can see be on him.

:20:15. > :20:25.turning third, and he looks tired. If he tires any more, that will be

:20:25. > :20:36.

:20:36. > :20:46.very useful. two lengths to go in this 1,500m freestyle. Ryan

:20:46. > :20:49.

:20:50. > :20:59.Cochrane now about 15 metres ahead, and it looks like Great Britain's

:21:00. > :21:08.

:21:08. > :21:18.Dan Fogg is on pace. He tried the 100m last year, didn't do it, just

:21:18. > :21:19.

:21:19. > :21:28.stick to what you are good at - the 200m, the 400m. Park is coming back

:21:28. > :21:38.very fast indeed. Look at that! Park of Korea finishing in second

:21:38. > :22:02.

:22:02. > :22:12.place, and his time is 14:56.89. What a great swim. Surely six

:22:12. > :22:24.

:22:24. > :22:30.people won't beat him in the next heat. Dan Fogg lying In a very good

:22:30. > :22:35.place indeed. Rapping on David Davies' career is quite important

:22:35. > :22:43.because I imagine that will be his last race. He has had a fantastic

:22:43. > :22:51.career. All way through Athens, to hear, three Olympic Games, and he

:22:51. > :22:58.should be very proud of what he has achieved. He has been inspirational.

:22:58. > :23:05.Ryan Cochrane winning the men's 1,500m freestyle. David Davies, if

:23:05. > :23:11.that is his last swim, he has been an inspiration for British swimmers.

:23:11. > :23:21.To watch more swimming, press the red button. We can hear from David

:23:21. > :23:23.

:23:23. > :23:28.Coming up in just a moment. David, no one has worked harder

:23:28. > :23:37.than you over the last 12 years. This is such a tough race, isn't

:23:37. > :23:42.it? Yes, I feel like an old man now, the kids have moved it on. I do the

:23:42. > :23:49.hardest events in the programme and I have from we tried a bit too hard

:23:49. > :23:52.over the last four years. I have given everything I had, and to his

:23:52. > :23:58.great to be here. I would love to be in the final but I can on this

:23:58. > :24:02.to say I have given it everything. Tell us about your London

:24:02. > :24:10.experience because you have obviously been to two previously.

:24:10. > :24:16.How does it compare? The biggest factor is the crowd. The venues are

:24:16. > :24:20.brilliant, the villages brilliant. It has been fantastic so far and

:24:21. > :24:25.hopefully we will have more medals. What does the future hold for David

:24:26. > :24:31.Davies now? I think that is probably my last race. I would like

:24:31. > :24:36.to have gone out on a better note, but this is my third Olympics. If

:24:36. > :24:44.someone had said to me when I was a boy you will win two Olympic medals

:24:44. > :24:50.and a Commonwealth medals, I would have been very pleased. Whether I

:24:50. > :24:56.carried on is another thing. have a lot of fans in here who are

:24:56. > :25:01.very proud of you, so well done. These swimmers have been so

:25:01. > :25:06.incredibly articulate in these interviews, one after another.

:25:06. > :25:11.get straight out the pool, amazing. They have really risen to the

:25:11. > :25:15.occasion. There has been drama at the archery, and a fantastic
