:00:13. > :00:17.Welcome to the 93 million Olympic velodrome here on the Olympic Park.

:00:17. > :00:20.It may have cost a lot to build, but the memories it is creating are

:00:21. > :00:24.priceless. Last night, Sir Chris Hoy was crowned our greatest

:00:24. > :00:28.Olympian ever after picking up yet another gold medal, and the anthems

:00:28. > :00:33.have continued to flow, the goals have continued to be won by Great

:00:33. > :00:39.Britain. On BBC Two moments ago, the men picked up the team's sprint

:00:39. > :00:43.gold medal. Congratulations to them. Meanwhile, on BBC One, the build-up

:00:43. > :00:53.to Victoria Pendleton. She now wants her chance to grab that gold

:00:53. > :01:24.

:01:24. > :01:30.She has been a fantastic ambassador for British cycling, but she has

:01:30. > :01:32.her work cut out. It is important to point out that the keirin is not

:01:32. > :01:38.Victoria and that an's specialist subject, but after the

:01:38. > :01:43.disappointment of last night, it has taken on huge importance.

:01:43. > :01:48.sure she was counting on a medal last night. That chance got taken

:01:48. > :01:54.away. She has a chance to win this today. The keirin is more of a

:01:54. > :01:59.lottery. There are many other riders in the race and some things

:01:59. > :02:06.are out of your control, so it is not all down to her, but she has

:02:06. > :02:10.the legs to win. It is one of the things we have spoken about. There

:02:10. > :02:13.are no variables in something like the team's sprint other than human

:02:13. > :02:19.nature, whereas in the keirin, your performance depends on what others

:02:19. > :02:23.do. That is the thing. You can predict your result before you

:02:23. > :02:31.going. But there are so many infinite variables for things that

:02:31. > :02:37.can happen. It is not just one person versus six. It is one to the

:02:37. > :02:41.power of six. It is one versus one versus one... There is a maths

:02:41. > :02:46.lesson for you! A maths genius as well as a cycling genius. Behind us,

:02:46. > :02:53.they are working out who will be placing 7th to 12th in the keirin.

:02:53. > :03:03.For people who are new to this, explain what they are about to see?

:03:03. > :03:04.

:03:04. > :03:07.It is going to be tactics. Some people like to take it on. Some

:03:07. > :03:16.riders like to take it from the front and move straight to the

:03:16. > :03:20.front. Some people will look like they are boxed in, but they can

:03:21. > :03:25.come round later. They can leave it and save their energies and then

:03:25. > :03:34.use that explosive effort to come round. The two should longest girls

:03:34. > :03:43.were both in the semi-finals, and a mayors and Pendleton. The women

:03:43. > :03:49.usually go when there is a lap to go. It shows their class. We can

:03:49. > :03:53.see that Mike loves his cycling, it can't take his eyes off the track.

:03:53. > :03:57.Date does inside the mind of Victoria Pendleton. You know her

:03:57. > :04:03.and the way she writes. What will she be looking to do? In depends

:04:03. > :04:07.what day it is. That is an important point. This is the key in

:04:07. > :04:12.the centre. I have not spoken to her personally on this trip so far,

:04:12. > :04:18.but I have spoken to the coaches, and they say she is in the right

:04:18. > :04:22.place, which is a good sign. She is highly emotional. The Olympics

:04:22. > :04:26.makes you emotional, but she is eager. She has waited four years

:04:26. > :04:35.for this opportunity. In Beijing, she did not have the option of

:04:35. > :04:40.doing the keirin or the team sprint. So she is eager to win this metal.

:04:40. > :04:47.There are a lot of deep thoughts going on, talking with the coach,

:04:47. > :04:52.talking about tactics. You have about five laps behind the

:04:52. > :04:55.motorbike before it pulls off, and that is a long time to be thinking.

:04:55. > :05:00.There was a remarkable documentary about Vicky recently which explain

:05:00. > :05:03.to us exactly what she's like as a rider. We hope she can pull out the

:05:03. > :05:12.performance we would all love to see, but it is not only did you

:05:12. > :05:21.riding for gold. Let's hear from We have another gold medal around

:05:21. > :05:30.your neck, a very special moment, Brian Thomas. How did it feel?

:05:30. > :05:35.is unbelievable, the sacrifices, it is unbelievable, the bond between

:05:35. > :05:42.the four. Tennant had to sit on the side and watch, he could have

:05:42. > :05:48.ridden. The unity of the team, I would miss the two any day to feel

:05:48. > :05:55.like that. The crowd were immense. I really struggled a after getting

:05:55. > :05:58.a bit ill. Mentally it has been really hard for me, without these

:05:58. > :06:04.boys and him picking me up and keeping me confident and stuff, I

:06:04. > :06:08.would not be stood here now. It is unbelievable, really. Ed Clancy, an

:06:08. > :06:12.official team captain of this pursuit team to set the world

:06:12. > :06:19.record and to win in this manner must be hugely satisfying for you?

:06:19. > :06:22.I just can't explain it. We had good vibes in the training camp

:06:22. > :06:28.through your four weeks ago, talking about the times we thought

:06:28. > :06:33.we could do if things happened well. Then Graham Thomas got food

:06:33. > :06:36.poisoning and we took a step backwards. By have spent so many

:06:36. > :06:41.years thinking about this moment. It is a mad explosion of emotion.

:06:41. > :06:44.It is out of this world. I can't say anything else. Peter Kennaugh,

:06:44. > :06:50.they must have been a time when you would if you would get here after

:06:50. > :06:53.injuring yourself? Yes, there were a few scary moments a couple of

:06:53. > :06:59.months back but I never stopped believing and all the support I

:06:59. > :07:05.have had has incredible. On my Twitter feed, my mates on Facebook,

:07:05. > :07:10.getting behind me 100%. That means the world to me. We have been

:07:10. > :07:15.talking about it since November. It feels like we have talked this to

:07:15. > :07:21.death and now it is done and we have one, it is this a real feeling.

:07:21. > :07:26.One that we will only come to terms with in time. It is incredible.

:07:26. > :07:31.Your friend Mark Cavendish is up there ran very pleased. Stephen, a

:07:31. > :07:36.gold medal to add to that bronze in Beijing. Back then, four years ago,

:07:36. > :07:41.this must have been your target? Definitely. It was four years ago.

:07:41. > :07:46.I was the Fifth man there and it was unfortunate but that is what

:07:46. > :07:51.spurred me on for the next four years. The last Vorm years have

:07:51. > :07:55.been hard for us and it has come together. -- the last four years

:07:55. > :08:05.have been hard for us. She will be inspired by those team

:08:05. > :08:06.

:08:06. > :08:15.pursued has and the crowd of 6,000 COMMENTATOR: They are away. This is

:08:15. > :08:20.the final of the women's Keirin. It is Guo Shuang of China who tucks in.

:08:20. > :08:27.We have Anna Meares, the current world champion, near the back and

:08:27. > :08:32.Victoria Pendleton's nemesis. Sullivan is in it for Canada. Twice

:08:32. > :08:35.the world champion, the French, and Lee of Hong Kong. This is the gold

:08:35. > :08:40.medal contest. This is one that Pendleton has said she would dearly

:08:40. > :08:44.love to win. Well, after the problems of yesterday she death --

:08:44. > :08:48.desperately would like to get a win here. She has two opportunities for

:08:48. > :08:52.a gold medal before she retires. She needs to take one. It would be

:08:52. > :09:00.a fantastic way to finish, in third position, happy to sit there.

:09:00. > :09:05.Everybody is waiting as the speed lifts. There is some talent in this

:09:05. > :09:10.line-up, Sanchez, Guo Shuang has been the world champion and

:09:10. > :09:14.Pendleton has pulled on the rainbow jersey for this as well. There is a

:09:14. > :09:20.clear gap in my mind. I think it is Anna Meares, Pendleton and Guo

:09:20. > :09:23.Shuang. Dust -- they are the ones on form. Lee had a fast time in

:09:23. > :09:29.qualification with possibly a chance but for me it is between

:09:29. > :09:34.those three. Well, the build up, it makes the hairs stand on the back

:09:34. > :09:40.of your neck because the tempo lifts and the derny bike gets

:09:40. > :09:43.louder. It will achieve the pace of 45 kilometres an hour. We are

:09:43. > :09:47.looking at Guo Shuang of China, who was relegated into silver medal

:09:47. > :09:53.position last night, having finished first in the team spent.

:09:53. > :09:59.That is history now. The coaches gesticulating to Pendleton, his

:09:59. > :10:03.arms were flailing away, saying late of the wheel to give yourself

:10:03. > :10:07.space to work in. Three more laps to go. That is what they do, they

:10:07. > :10:11.lay off. They have to stay within ten metres of the derny bike and

:10:11. > :10:16.ten metres of each other until the bike swings out of the way. We are

:10:16. > :10:20.getting towards the sharp end of business. Into the track goes the

:10:20. > :10:25.derny bike and the crowd are waiting for the first strike and it

:10:25. > :10:29.is Anna Meares, the defending, the world champion, I should say. She

:10:29. > :10:32.is looking to try to win the Keirin. It is the first time the Keirin has

:10:32. > :10:36.been in the Olympic Games for the women and she has gone to the front.

:10:36. > :10:39.There is work for Pendleton, here comes Pendleton and Anna Meares is

:10:40. > :10:43.looking for the challenge as they go into the finishing straight. It

:10:43. > :10:49.will be the bell, Victoria Pendleton has ignited the burners

:10:49. > :10:55.and she has gone ahead. Ana Mears it -- Anna Meares has washed away.

:10:55. > :11:01.Guo Shuang is trying. They are coming down the finishing straight.

:11:01. > :11:07.Oh, Victoria Pendleton takes the gold medal. She is the Olympic

:11:07. > :11:13.Keirin champion! Guo Shuang got the silver. The world champion, Anna

:11:13. > :11:18.Meares, was washed away. Well, I was really surprised to see her get

:11:18. > :11:22.swamped. Pendleton, had jumped to the front was incredible. I thought

:11:22. > :11:27.that Guo Shuang might challenge around the outside but no, Victoria

:11:27. > :11:32.Pendleton held her off. She has got a gold medal to finish her career.

:11:32. > :11:37.What a way to go out. What kind of bonus will that before her morale,

:11:37. > :11:42.for the competition still to come, Chris? It is a bonus. She has got

:11:42. > :11:48.one in the back. She has got what she has worked so hard to get. A

:11:48. > :11:53.personal best in training. judges are checking but Victoria

:11:53. > :11:57.Pendleton, no infringements, she was on the front. She is

:11:57. > :12:01.celebrating, she has the Union flag in her hand. That is her second

:12:01. > :12:05.Olympic gold medal. She won the gold in the sprint in Beijing, now

:12:05. > :12:09.the gold for the Keirin and the flags are waving here. That was a

:12:09. > :12:13.genius, a master class by Pendleton. We know she is in the form of her

:12:13. > :12:22.life and that reflected strongly. She hit the front and nobody would

:12:22. > :12:28.deny her. Guo Shuang of China gets silver, and Lee, Hong Kong, bronze.

:12:28. > :12:32.She posted a fast time in training. It should have been between Guo

:12:32. > :12:36.Shuang, Anna Meares and Pendleton, Butleigh has excelled and people do

:12:36. > :12:40.that at the Olympic Games, don't they? They do, it is the first

:12:40. > :12:45.medal I can recall going to a woman bike rider from Hong Kong.

:12:45. > :12:51.Fantastic, getting a bronze. There is the victor and she is putting

:12:51. > :12:58.her arms around the coach. Here is a chance to look at some images

:12:58. > :13:03.again. Well, Guo Shuang was first onto the motorbike there but she

:13:03. > :13:07.would be stinging after yesterday, being relegated to the silver medal

:13:07. > :13:12.position after she got a gold medal. It was not enough. Victoria

:13:12. > :13:16.Pendleton is so sharp. When Anna Meares made this move I thought it

:13:16. > :13:18.was massive. Victoria Pendleton tried to get on the wheel and

:13:18. > :13:22.missed it and went into 4th position and I thought it was a

:13:22. > :13:26.long way to come around but look at the acceleration, right around the

:13:26. > :13:29.outside, came the long way. That helped her out because they came

:13:29. > :13:33.into the straight and she was able to run down on to the line and

:13:33. > :13:37.nobody could come around. I tell you what, that turn of speed has

:13:37. > :13:42.made a statement of huge, huge proportions to the rest of the

:13:42. > :13:46.opposition ready for the sprint. Guo Shuang was coming back at home

:13:46. > :13:50.in the closing stages but it was all about Victoria Pinnow --

:13:50. > :13:55.Victoria Pendleton. Phenomenal, unbelievable. So, she has landed

:13:55. > :14:01.the gold medal for the women's's killing. It was interesting when

:14:01. > :14:06.they were lining -- for the women's Keirin. When they were lining up,

:14:06. > :14:11.Pendleton was focused. I think what she thought was OK, don't enter my

:14:11. > :14:15.territory, or, and at your own peril but she did enter and she

:14:15. > :14:20.watched the Australian away. Anna Meares ended up in 5th position, a

:14:20. > :14:23.real surprise. It certainly is. So, we will have another medal

:14:23. > :14:27.presentation and here the national anthem again but there is nobody

:14:27. > :14:32.more happy than that lady, there, Lee of Hong Kong, to take the

:14:32. > :14:36.bronze. Look at that for a smile. It is nice to see surprises like

:14:36. > :14:43.that at the Olympic Games. Pendleton celebrating here at the

:14:43. > :14:49.trackside. Look at the smile, a fantastic performance. You run out

:14:49. > :14:55.of superlatives. It is such an amazing time. You do, actually. The

:14:55. > :14:59.words have been used so often they have been diluted. An unprecedented

:14:59. > :15:03.time for British cycling. They don't jar, you have to Kuyt -- you

:15:03. > :15:09.have to keep using them. Queen Victoria, you have carried on again.

:15:09. > :15:14.You carried on where you left off in Beijing. I tell you what, she is

:15:14. > :15:17.back, molten hot. Well, she is not back for long, a few more days and

:15:17. > :15:21.she will have retired from the world of cycling and what a way to

:15:21. > :15:25.go out. Certainly, at the pinnacle of her career and it looks like

:15:25. > :15:30.with that kind of performance that she could end up with a brace of

:15:30. > :15:34.gold medals. No pressure, but that was very impressive. Guo Shuang may

:15:34. > :15:40.have to deal with a challenge when it comes to the sprint. She was no

:15:40. > :15:43.slouch. She came back twice during the Keirin to challenge tries. She

:15:43. > :15:48.tried to hold Victoria Pendleton up to to stop her coming around the

:15:48. > :15:51.outside and was only half a wheel down. We will see more of her run

:15:51. > :15:57.the sprint competition. meritorious performance by Victoria

:15:57. > :16:07.Pendleton. There she is, Stella in her delivery and no -- nobody had

:16:07. > :16:14.

:16:14. > :16:20.an answer. They tried to challenge celebrations keep going on and on.

:16:20. > :16:25.Everybody in the British camp, the mechanics are coming up. There is

:16:25. > :16:33.Paul Manning, who has had success with the women. I think we can join

:16:34. > :16:38.Many congratulations. What a what roller-coaster of emotions in 24

:16:38. > :16:43.hours. I can barely believe it right now. It was really hard, the

:16:43. > :16:47.excitement, what a great job the girls did in a world record and the

:16:47. > :16:53.guys won a world record and gold medal. I was just like, focus,

:16:53. > :16:57.focus. You still have a race to do. It was so hard. I can't believe it.

:16:57. > :17:02.Thank you so much to everybody who has helped me get here. The crowd

:17:02. > :17:06.has been fantastic and they really helped me today. Now a double

:17:06. > :17:09.Olympic champion. From a tactical point of the Duke you could not

:17:09. > :17:13.have ridden a more perfect race. think my coach might have something

:17:13. > :17:18.to say about that. He said to me, don't look for their race, just

:17:18. > :17:24.make your own. When it is your moment, go. My legs were good from

:17:24. > :17:28.last night. I wanted to really show what I have got. We worked out, --

:17:28. > :17:33.it worked out OK, I guess. It is not over yet. We can see the form

:17:33. > :17:35.you are in. I am looking forward to the sprint. I hope my time trial

:17:35. > :17:39.will be a little bit more special than it has been over the past

:17:39. > :17:45.couple of years. I have been working on it a lot and I am hoping

:17:45. > :17:49.to spend, I have a good chance there. -- I in the sprint I have a

:17:49. > :17:54.good chance. I want to come back with a vengeance. It is lovely to

:17:54. > :18:01.see you wrap yourself in there Union Jack. And to see your fiancee.

:18:01. > :18:07.I was searching and the crowd. Congratulations, enjoy the podium.

:18:07. > :18:12.Bengt you very much. Well, at -- I bet at home you have a sore throat

:18:12. > :18:16.but you can try your eyes. Congratulations, Victoria Pendleton.

:18:16. > :18:23.What are right, she has hide highs and lows emotionally and physically

:18:23. > :18:26.but she has told us she is an amazing form. She was right. It is

:18:26. > :18:29.a matter of if she could get her head together, lots of stuff going

:18:29. > :18:36.through her mind but she composed herself and performed the most

:18:36. > :18:40.perfect race. Respect, it was amazing. In 2004, you were the

:18:40. > :18:45.world champion. How impressed were you with that right, tactically and

:18:45. > :18:48.physically? Her coach said the perfect thing, do your right. Quite

:18:48. > :18:53.often in the Keirin you react to what others are doing in that race

:18:53. > :19:02.and you have to take it by the straps and get on with it and make

:19:02. > :19:06.it with your race. Perfect words. She did that. Yeah, I am speechless,

:19:06. > :19:12.emotional. It is great, I know Vicky -- Victoria well. I am happy

:19:12. > :19:16.for her. I had the feeling came across to you at home, it felt like

:19:16. > :19:23.60,000, not 6,000. Marc Mac -- a mark, you concentrated on the road

:19:23. > :19:27.because these guys are put through the mill so hard for the track team.

:19:27. > :19:31.What will it have been like for Victoria? Can you imagine, one

:19:31. > :19:36.thing on the horizon you are working towards? It is one thing.

:19:36. > :19:41.There is a lot of hours, just in dark rooms and gymnasiums and the

:19:41. > :19:45.track. There is no real sunshine -- there is no real sunlight. It can

:19:45. > :19:50.get quite depressing at times. You have that one goal, to lift the

:19:50. > :19:54.gold medal and that is what she has done out there. OK, they may not

:19:54. > :20:00.have been some light recently but now she is walking on cloud nine.

:20:00. > :20:04.She will feel on top of world, and she rides in the women's team

:20:04. > :20:08.sprint before long. The other headlines in the Velodrome, the

:20:08. > :20:12.women's team pursuit has went for gold and broke the world record,

:20:12. > :20:15.they will ride tomorrow. Jason Kenny has been chosen in the

:20:15. > :20:20.individual sprint. We will find out if that was a good decision by the

:20:20. > :20:23.selectors. Another special evening in the Velodrome. It has been hot

:20:24. > :20:33.but we don't mind. Gary, you have to get yourself down here if you

:20:34. > :20:44.

:20:44. > :20:50.As much as we would love to go to Gary Lineker, we couldn't. But it

:20:50. > :20:56.has been a special evening. Not just but -- not just for Victoria

:20:56. > :21:01.Pendleton, but it moves us up in the medal table. As well as the

:21:01. > :21:06.action in the velodrome tomorrow, we have the men's on the and, which

:21:07. > :21:15.is six disciplines over two days. Make sure you book a date with the

:21:15. > :21:22.velodrome. 6,000 people did that today and they weren't disappointed.

:21:22. > :21:28.That was immense. Quite something. Victoria Pendleton you are a star.

:21:28. > :21:32.If day six was a great one, the 7th day promised even more and it has

:21:32. > :21:42.and failed to deliver. We still have Rebecca Adlington's bid to

:21:42. > :22:02.

:22:02. > :22:12.There she is, double Olympic champion four years ago. This home

:22:12. > :22:13.

:22:13. > :22:19.crowd have all come to see her swim. I hope you can failed the

:22:19. > :22:28.atmosphere. It is extraordinary. It is a heat and the crowd is going

:22:28. > :22:38.absolutely not so. -- knots. Rebecca is really putting the

:27:24. > :27:30.finish the story! The crowd are going absolutely wild. And they are

:27:42. > :27:48.Olympic regatta. It has taken 12, long years, a ton of support and

:27:48. > :27:55.the crowd are on their feet. There is a cacophony of noise around her.

:27:55. > :28:05.We are applauding you Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins. What we

:28:05. > :28:06.

:28:06. > :28:16.are seeing right now is that dreams do come true! At long last,

:28:16. > :28:17.

:28:17. > :28:27.Katherine Grainger is the Olympic champion. Was it worth it? It was

:28:27. > :28:33.

:28:33. > :28:38.worth the wait. They are tears of I am delighted to say Katherine

:28:38. > :28:43.Grainger and Anna Watkins joined us alongside Sir Steve Redgrave. Three

:28:43. > :28:48.silver medals, you must be thrilled, you have finally done it?

:28:48. > :28:52.Absolutely. I am still trying to find the words. It is the most

:28:52. > :29:00.incredible feeling. Describe your emotions when you finally crossed

:29:00. > :29:04.the line and you you're going to win the gold medal? Ana was happy

:29:04. > :29:08.halfway through the race that we were going to win. It wasn't until

:29:08. > :29:13.we cross the line we were definitely Olympic champions. It

:29:13. > :29:20.has been a long wait and an incredible journey. The moment when

:29:20. > :29:25.it definitely happens, it is indescribable. It is pretty good to

:29:25. > :29:28.win 3 difference silver medals in three Olympics. But they must have

:29:28. > :29:36.been a moment in the race when you finally thought it was going to

:29:36. > :29:41.happen? Early at the start it was going how we wanted to go. When the

:29:41. > :29:46.boat feels like it is moving at its best, we knew early on that was

:29:46. > :29:52.happening. You do not know until you cross the finish line. There

:29:52. > :29:55.was not counting any chickens until the buzzer went. Anna Watkins, you

:29:55. > :30:00.were more confident? Did you have the inner belief all way you as

:30:00. > :30:06.equally as nervous? We were both very confident and said we can beat

:30:06. > :30:13.anybody. But you don't equate that to winning the Olympics. You don't

:30:13. > :30:17.dare make those two things the same. From a rational point of view in

:30:17. > :30:23.the race, before halfway I thought, we had a good start and we were

:30:23. > :30:27.moving away and I thought, there is no way they are going to beat us

:30:27. > :30:32.now. I did not dare to think about what it would be like crossing the

:30:32. > :30:39.line first. I still don't know where I am or what has happened to

:30:39. > :30:42.me today! You have won a gold medal and it is brilliant! Katherine

:30:42. > :30:47.Grainger gets more of the focus because it is an amazing story, but

:30:47. > :30:54.did you feel more pressure because he wanted it so much for her as

:30:54. > :30:59.well as yourself? I knew it was focused on us as a crew and her

:30:59. > :31:02.story. The pressure we were aware of came from ourselves. We knew

:31:02. > :31:10.from the first day we rode together it was special, and we should be

:31:10. > :31:15.able to win an Olympics. That was our motivation, the pressure. It

:31:15. > :31:20.has been nice for me because, Catherine has done most of the

:31:20. > :31:26.talking and I am happy with that. She is a superstar and a good role

:31:26. > :31:35.model for the sport. What was it about the crowd, did they get you

:31:35. > :31:39.home? The crowd were phenomenal. The atmosphere! The only

:31:39. > :31:45.disappointments is we don't get to do it again. We have never raced in

:31:45. > :31:49.anything like that, we never will again. It was like having an extra

:31:50. > :31:55.person in the boat. The tunnel of noise when we entered the last 500m,

:31:55. > :32:01.we knew it was for us. We knew it was a special, special day so many

:32:01. > :32:06.people wanted to be part of. We did have a strong finish anyway, but

:32:06. > :32:11.nobody was going to beat us with that support on a side. Steve, I

:32:11. > :32:16.saw from your reaction, you were hugging Catherine and I did not

:32:16. > :32:21.think you are going to let her go! What was going on with your

:32:21. > :32:27.emotions? No words were said. Both of us were trying to hold it

:32:27. > :32:33.together. Catherine is very special and there is a lot of emotion

:32:34. > :32:38.between us. I had more tears in my eyes hugging Anna Watkins than I

:32:38. > :32:45.did with Catherine. I made sure I wasn't blubbing when the cameras

:32:45. > :32:48.came back on to me. A word on their achievement? Outstanding. For the

:32:48. > :32:57.last three years we have dominated the whole circuit, nobody has come

:32:57. > :33:00.close to them. It is a fairy-tale story in some ways for Catherine.

:33:00. > :33:06.Ana has been an Olympic podium before. A great achievement by both

:33:06. > :33:11.of them. What is special about them is, they are very equal in their

:33:11. > :33:17.ability. Catherine is getting the attention, and rightly so. When

:33:17. > :33:22.they are racing in singles, it is very competitive. We never know

:33:22. > :33:32.which one wins, they take it in turns. You were both studying PhDs,

:33:32. > :33:34.

:33:34. > :33:42.one is in law, the other is in mathematics. How do you fit it in.

:33:42. > :33:48.We haven't done a lot of PhD work in recent weeks. We have wanted to

:33:48. > :33:52.do something alongside the rowing. It can become a unhealthily

:33:52. > :33:58.obsessive. Right now, it is all about this moment. Thanks for

:33:58. > :34:01.coming, we are so thrilled if for you. Congratulations. It is not

:34:01. > :34:06.just a gold medal here, it is another gold medal we can celebrate.

:34:06. > :34:16.The gold medal ceremony of gold medal number eight, Victoria

:34:16. > :34:26.

:34:26. > :34:30.Pendleton. What a brilliant effort from her. Great Britain are up to

:34:30. > :34:36.third place on the leaderboard behind China and the United States.

:34:37. > :34:40.We will be hoping for another one shortly been swimming. Now we had

:34:40. > :34:44.to the swimming pool to join Claire and Markov which will be hopefully

:34:44. > :34:49.an historic night for British swimming.

:34:49. > :34:56.I cried like a baby went Steve Redgrave was holding Katherine

:34:56. > :34:59.Grainger. What a fabulous day for sports women, Rebecca Adlington

:35:00. > :35:05.could and the cherry on top of the icing that we have on top of the

:35:05. > :35:10.kick already. Excitement has been building. I am nervous as if I am

:35:10. > :35:14.getting in there. There is so much expectation, this is the race we

:35:14. > :35:20.have been waiting for. It is a real gold medal opportunity. I don't

:35:20. > :35:23.know what is going through her mind at the moment. She would be the

:35:23. > :35:28.first British swimmer to successfully defend an Olympic

:35:28. > :35:32.title and the first British woman to win three gold medals. We have

:35:32. > :35:42.Lizzie Simmonds coming up in the Lizzie Simmonds coming up in the

:35:42. > :35:43.

:35:43. > :35:53.200m backstroke final. The men's 100m butterfly final. Here comes

:35:53. > :35:57.

:35:57. > :36:02.but she takes a positive from a negative, saying everybody

:36:02. > :36:07.struggles the sleeper before the final. She is worried if she gets

:36:07. > :36:12.her playlist the wrong way round, she will come out dozy. She is out

:36:12. > :36:16.in lane one, she will be out of the way. The action will be in the

:36:16. > :36:21.middle of the ball with Elizabeth Beisel and Missy Franklin, in four

:36:21. > :36:28.and five. -- in the Ball. Let's hand you over to Adrian Moorhouse

:36:28. > :36:33.and Andy Jameson. This is Elizabeth Beisel, of the

:36:33. > :36:37.USA, 19 years of age and fastest qualifier for the final of the

:36:37. > :36:42.Olympic Games. She has won silver on the 400m medley but he is the

:36:42. > :36:46.danger, the 17-year-old giant of a woman, six ft one, the world

:36:46. > :36:51.champion who won the 100 metres backstroke and she is going to be

:36:51. > :36:58.frightening. She has a great stroke, backstroke is her stride. Elizabeth

:36:58. > :37:03.Beisel coming down from the 400m to the 200m and Missy Franklin, she is

:37:03. > :37:09.a good 200m freestyle, so she is going up a bit. That is Anastasia

:37:09. > :37:15.Zueva of Russia, the European record holder. In seven, well, what

:37:15. > :37:23.a career she has had. She is now 28. I think this may be her swansong.

:37:23. > :37:27.The world champion from way back, way, way back, defending Olympic

:37:27. > :37:35.champion, the world record holder she is. In lane eight, Sinead

:37:35. > :37:41.Russell of Canada. A 19-year-old, 9th at the world, nine that the

:37:41. > :37:49.Commonwealth. Kirsty Coventry, having won in two dozen and four

:37:49. > :37:55.and 2008, it could be a step too far. -- in 2004. With Missy

:37:55. > :37:59.Franklin, I think it may be too much. There is Kirsty, 28 years of

:37:59. > :38:05.age. She trains in the States. She has gone back to her original

:38:05. > :38:09.training coach, and had injuries earlier in the year. Lizzie

:38:09. > :38:13.Simmonds is up there at the top for Great Britain, in lane one. She has

:38:13. > :38:23.improved through the rounds. She had an average heat and a good

:38:23. > :38:27.

:38:27. > :38:31.metres backstroke and a good start at the top from Lizzie Simmonds of

:38:31. > :38:36.Great Britain. The best start, very good indeed. Also going well, Missy

:38:36. > :38:40.Franklin. Lizzie Simmonds needs to control this first 50 metres and

:38:40. > :38:45.then why did it. She did this in the third -- in the semi-finals.

:38:45. > :38:49.She is in the same lane in the semi-finals, against the green. It

:38:49. > :38:53.is as if she is swimming her own race. A great start. Let's hope she

:38:53. > :38:58.has more to hold on. Missy Franklin turns first, going for the world

:38:58. > :39:02.record, I think. A very good turn from Missy Franklin, a super turn.

:39:02. > :39:08.Lizzie Simmonds turned second. She has been excitable at these Games,

:39:08. > :39:11.gone out quite quickly. The wheels have fallen off a little bit. Look

:39:11. > :39:16.at this for Missy Franklin, impressive. Right on the world

:39:16. > :39:22.record pace. It is Kirsty Coventry's record, from lane seven.

:39:22. > :39:28.Missy Franklin is going to turn under the world record pace. 60.5,

:39:28. > :39:31.over half a second underneath. In second place is limit -- is a

:39:31. > :39:36.Lizzie Simmonds, another great turn. A great turn, I wonder if she has

:39:36. > :39:40.gone quickly. The rest of the field, particularly in four and three,

:39:40. > :39:44.coming back on her. Missy Franklin, what are you doing? She is way

:39:44. > :39:48.ahead of the world record pace. It will be awesome if she can hold on

:39:48. > :39:55.to this. Lizzie Simmonds is in the medal hunt, let's see what she has

:39:55. > :39:58.got. She has to dig deep. It is over half a second under the world

:39:58. > :40:03.record. Lizzie Simmonds is in third place. The field is starting to

:40:03. > :40:07.come back at her. She has had a decent turn, but it looks like in

:40:07. > :40:11.lane six, Anastasia Zueva of Russia, is in a silver medal position. This

:40:11. > :40:15.is all about the gold and Missy Franklin, the 17-year-old from

:40:15. > :40:22.Colorado and surely she is going to break the world record. She is

:40:22. > :40:30.almost half a body length inside it. The world record is two minutes,

:40:30. > :40:34.4.81. It was Kirsty Coventry's, now it is Missy Franklin. The new

:40:34. > :40:39.Olympic champion is Missy Franklin of the USA. The silver, Anastasia

:40:39. > :40:43.Zueva of Russia. The bronze, Elizabeth Beisel of the USA. Lizzie

:40:43. > :40:47.Simmonds was in 4th. What a great win from out there in lane one.

:40:47. > :40:52.That was a gutsy swim from Lizzie Simmonds. I could not believe she

:40:52. > :40:56.would take it out in the same pace as she did in the semi-finals, but

:40:56. > :41:00.she hung on. She should be proud of herself with that. What we have

:41:00. > :41:06.seen here from Missy Franklin, Elizabeth Beisel is saying, I

:41:06. > :41:11.cannot believe what you just did. 17 years of age and she has wiped

:41:11. > :41:15.over half a second off a world record that was set three years ago.

:41:15. > :41:19.Missy Franklin, fulfilling the promise everyone has been talking

:41:19. > :41:26.about. Everyone has been thinking it is going to happen and it did.

:41:26. > :41:33.The first time she swam rested, look what happens. You wonder what

:41:33. > :41:37.would happen... Go on, Missy Franklin! It is great to see.

:41:37. > :41:42.as traumatic as a close race for the parents. I have seen parents

:41:42. > :41:48.worse than that, I tell you. You are right. A lot of Americans do

:41:48. > :41:55.multi- events, like Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps. Phelps started a

:41:55. > :42:03.trend. Maybe it is too much. Well, a wonderful new world record and

:42:03. > :42:10.gold for Missy Franklin. Anastasia Zueva, the silver for Russia.

:42:10. > :42:13.Elizabeth Beisel got the bronze. It Lizzie Simmonds got 4th. Super.

:42:13. > :42:18.Kirsty Coventry congratulating Missy Franklin, the former world

:42:18. > :42:24.record holder. I think she will be retiring now. She has done great

:42:24. > :42:29.service to sport. There is the new generation, saluting the crowd. A

:42:29. > :42:33.great night of finals. We have Phelps next and then Rebecca.

:42:33. > :42:37.Rebecca has just watched that and Lizzie Simmonds have a fantastic

:42:38. > :42:44.swim and I bet she is pumped, sitting there, ready to go. One

:42:44. > :42:54.more race before her and of course a little issue of the men's 100m

:42:54. > :42:56.

:42:56. > :43:01.Congratulations, a world record. You must be pleased? I am so happy.

:43:01. > :43:04.I will remember this moment the whole of my life. A fantastic week,

:43:04. > :43:09.particularly on back straight. have been working hard on my back

:43:09. > :43:12.straight. I am happy to come out and get the result I did. What

:43:12. > :43:16.about what this means to everybody at home? It has been a terrible

:43:16. > :43:20.time for everybody at home and you wanted to dedicate this to your

:43:20. > :43:27.home town? I didn't I do, I dedicate everything I have done to

:43:27. > :43:37.them. I have had so many supportive tweets and on Facebook, it means

:43:37. > :43:44.

:43:44. > :43:49.the word -- the world to me. Well metre butterfly final. There is a

:43:49. > :43:57.big chap. Verlinden of Holland, the world championship finalist last

:43:57. > :44:02.year. He works in Shanghai. In the next lane, it is USA, USA, then

:44:02. > :44:07.South Africa, then the Serb. The first of the Americans, McGill, a

:44:07. > :44:11.bronze medallist at the world's last year and I could see this guy

:44:11. > :44:15.pushing Phelps pretty hard here. think you are right. Look at

:44:15. > :44:21.Michael Phelps coming out now, almost as though the weight of the

:44:21. > :44:31.world has fallen off his shoulders since he got that multimodal record.

:44:31. > :44:31.

:44:31. > :44:36.He was devastating in that semi- final last night. Le Clos beat him

:44:36. > :44:41.marginally in the 200. He can't sprint, he leads the field go a bit,

:44:41. > :44:50.Le Clos. It will be fascinating to see how this pans out. He beat his

:44:50. > :44:55.superhero. Speaking of superheroes, here is a fascinating chap, Cavic,

:44:55. > :45:00.the European record holder. He lost the last Olympic Games by 11

:45:00. > :45:04.hundredth of a second, only to find that he touched the wall first, but

:45:04. > :45:09.he did not touch it hard enough. Michael Phelps did come as though

:45:09. > :45:13.he got the official result. Germany, day seven, no medals at all. 80

:45:13. > :45:20.years since they had a total shut- out in the swimming-pools at the

:45:20. > :45:26.Olympic Games. They have had a stinker. Korotyshkin of Russia, in

:45:26. > :45:32.eight. Michael Phelps, when he lost the one he sought -- we thought he

:45:32. > :45:38.would win, the butterfly, he lost the medley, came 4th, Le Clos has

:45:38. > :45:44.beaten him, McGill took him close that the file -- at the qualifying.

:45:44. > :45:48.He is rested. When he looks mean, I think he has got enough in him to

:45:48. > :45:53.get this medal, this gold medal. Le Clos will push him but he will not

:45:54. > :45:59.push him on the first 50. He will go out slow but come back like a

:46:00. > :46:08.train. Cavic will be fast. Le Clos will be slower but coming back. I

:46:08. > :46:13.think Phelps will try and Naila to the first 50m. -- will try to nail

:46:13. > :46:19.it in the first 50m. A very good start from McGill, quick off the

:46:19. > :46:27.box. A good one tenth of a second faster than everybody else. McGill,

:46:27. > :46:35.he looks good down this first 50. Cavic of Serbia has gone off like a

:46:35. > :46:40.shot. Phelps was behind at the moment. He is a bit behind, both

:46:40. > :46:47.him and Le Clos are strong finishers. A poor a turn for Phelps.

:46:47. > :46:52.He is coming through now. Lane seven, Deibler, did it in the semi-

:46:52. > :46:55.finals. Michael Phelps is coming strongly. He is coming back

:46:55. > :47:01.strongly but he needs to because he is not winning by about half a

:47:01. > :47:06.metre. Michael Phelps in lane four has a lot of work to do. His Cavic

:47:06. > :47:16.going to get it? Phelps has got it, he has won -- he has won. The gold

:47:16. > :47:20.medal goes to Michael Phelps of the USA. The silver, Korotyshkin Russia.

:47:20. > :47:27.Oh my goodness, it is all over the place here. Michael Phelps wins the

:47:27. > :47:32.gold and a tie for silver. Le Clos and Korotyshkin of Russia. What a

:47:32. > :47:37.meat Le Clos is having. That was so hard, the last 25 metres. Here is

:47:37. > :47:43.the start. I did not think Phelps look would let them go that far.

:47:43. > :47:50.That is surprising. Le Clos with him, that two at the back, 7th

:47:50. > :47:55.eight, and then first and second. There is Cavic with the pink suit.

:47:55. > :47:59.Phelps came out of the term. What happened there was the outside

:47:59. > :48:05.lanes was smoking, going really quickly, and Phelps came through. I

:48:05. > :48:10.thought Le Clos was out of it. How did he get the silver? His last

:48:10. > :48:17.five metres is incredible. His mum again. Don't put us through it.

:48:17. > :48:24.Kids put their parents through all sorts of grief, don't they? He has

:48:24. > :48:33.finished with his fingers up as well. I bet his head was going nuts.

:48:33. > :48:39.You are kidding me!, Michael Phelps has won his 17th gold medal at the

:48:39. > :48:44.Olympics Games. 21 in total. Michael Phelps, three-times in a

:48:44. > :48:50.row 100 metres medley champion at the Olympic Games. Le Clos

:48:50. > :48:55.Korotyshkin tied for silver and there was a tie for 4th as well.

:48:55. > :49:03.salutes the crowd. That is his third gold medal. You can't bet

:49:03. > :49:10.against them, he will get four gold medals this Games. Chad le plus has

:49:10. > :49:19.his goggles around his neck still. -- Le Clos. Phelps was relaxed,

:49:19. > :49:24.Michael, your poor pop Sharmila Kamaleswaran -- your poor mother's

:49:24. > :49:29.fingers must be chewed to bits. has come I did not have a good

:49:29. > :49:37.finish or a good turn, but I am not going to nitpick my race right now.

:49:37. > :49:42.I am happy to be able to defend that title. All of my 100-metre

:49:42. > :49:47.butterflies have been within ten -- within two tenths of a second, so

:49:47. > :49:52.it is a good way to finish my last individuals win ever. To be able to

:49:52. > :49:57.win it is pretty special. 17 gold medals, you have not enough yet?

:49:57. > :50:01.One more tomorrow, hopefully. you are basketball fan? The NBA

:50:01. > :50:07.guys are in tonight? Yes, a couple of them sent be text messages last

:50:07. > :50:11.night. They said they were coming in. They were going to come and

:50:11. > :50:16.supporters. It is good to have those guys here, supporting as

:50:16. > :50:19.watching us do what we do. special might, thank you. Thanks.

:50:20. > :50:23.As Michael Phelps alluded to, that is the last time we will see him

:50:23. > :50:28.swim in an individual race. He has one more to come, the relay, and he

:50:28. > :50:33.goes out on a gold. You can't give him enough credit, can you? No, you

:50:33. > :50:36.can't describe it. I saw him at the age of 15 at the Sydney Olympics,

:50:36. > :50:40.12 years ago and he keeps performing but that is the end of

:50:40. > :50:45.it. His last swim. Everybody appreciated seeing the greatest

:50:45. > :50:49.swimmer ever to grace the poor. Britain has been waiting for this

:50:49. > :50:59.race, the final of the women's 800 metres and the defending champion

:50:59. > :51:01.

:51:01. > :51:07.Lauren Boyle of New Zealand set alight time best to qualify for

:51:07. > :51:13.this. This could be a threat. She is only 15 and I am not sure she

:51:13. > :51:23.will know what she is doing yet. Her international debut. Katie

:51:23. > :51:30.

:51:30. > :51:34.Ledecky of the USA. they are going mad as well. Rebecca

:51:34. > :51:43.Adlington is about to create history, I am sure a bit. She looks

:51:43. > :51:48.so good. Lotte Friis of Denmark is another big threat. Thigh she

:51:48. > :51:53.already has her stuff of ready for the race. It is almost like she is

:51:53. > :52:00.setting herself up. There are routines at this point. You start

:52:00. > :52:06.to think of the next thing you can do, which will be a dive. She will

:52:06. > :52:10.be ignoring what is going on around her. She just been asked by the

:52:10. > :52:20.judge asking her which side she would like the marker indicating

:52:20. > :52:27.

:52:27. > :52:37.how many events she has left. The Hungarian is the European champion.

:52:37. > :52:38.

:52:39. > :52:46.Don't expect Coralie Balmy to be amongst the medals.

:52:46. > :52:56.I think it will be head-to-head between these two. It could be a

:52:56. > :53:09.

:53:09. > :53:19.quick race. Rebecca Adlington just fiddling around with her goggles.

:53:19. > :53:23.

:53:23. > :53:29.The crowd get quiet. Rebecca, it is time to create some serious history.

:53:29. > :53:35.What we have been waiting for, the final of the women's 800m freestyle.

:53:35. > :53:42.Rebecca Adlington has had a decent start. Control the first 50m, then

:53:42. > :53:51.her coach has a clear strategy. Absolutely, get this first 100, get

:53:51. > :53:56.into the rhythm. She has been doing some really good pacing work. When

:53:56. > :54:05.she set the world record in Beijing and broke the fantastic record, she

:54:05. > :54:15.was around 62, 62.5. But Katie Ledecky, the 15-year-old, playing

:54:15. > :54:31.

:54:31. > :54:37.the place we expected. I think Katie Ledecky in the black hat of

:54:37. > :54:42.the USA and Lotte Friis from Denmark have to force the pace. It

:54:42. > :54:52.is the only way they will win anything here. And Katie Ledecky is

:54:52. > :54:54.

:54:54. > :55:01.starting to go. She is under the world record pace. We talked about

:55:01. > :55:10.her being a danger, and if you are a British fan, Katie Ledecky has

:55:10. > :55:15.not got the pacing quite right and will be punished later on. Lotte

:55:15. > :55:22.Friis and Rebecca Adlington are just ahead of the world record. You

:55:22. > :55:32.are seeing the fastest 80 metres freestyle races. Katie Ledecky has

:55:32. > :55:35.

:55:35. > :55:42.gone off like a shot. -- 800m. Katie Ledecky, Rebecca Adlington is

:55:42. > :55:47.on her feet at the moment. Katie Ledecky is way out there. I don't

:55:47. > :55:53.think she can hold on but at 15 years of age, who knows what she

:55:53. > :55:59.can do? We have had 15 and 16-year- old spoilers in the women's events

:55:59. > :56:06.before now. Rebecca cannot be thrown by this. It is important

:56:06. > :56:11.that she keeps and maintains her own pace and strategies. If she

:56:11. > :56:20.ignores Katie Ledecky, she is right where she needs to be with Lotte

:56:20. > :56:25.Friis. If she goes off and catches up with Katie Ledecky, it might

:56:25. > :56:32.throw the race with Lotte Friis. This is interesting, Rebecca

:56:32. > :56:36.Adlington has made her move. I think she has decided that is

:56:36. > :56:40.enough and doesn't wants Katie Ledecky to far ahead. Look how much

:56:40. > :56:47.she has taken out of Lotte Friis from Denmark. It is very

:56:47. > :56:56.interesting. Katie Ledecky leading for the USA. Lotte Friis is trying

:56:56. > :57:01.to get back on terms. Rebecca knew this. Your strategy is one thing,

:57:01. > :57:06.but you need to be flexible. She cannot let Katie Ledecky get away

:57:06. > :57:10.too far. It is like all sports where tactics are involved and then

:57:10. > :57:14.its unfolds in a different way. She must have known a bit about Katie

:57:14. > :57:22.Ledecky, but not much because this is the first time she has raced for

:57:22. > :57:24.her country. Right now, there are 18,000 people in this particular

:57:24. > :57:32.building waiting for Rebecca Adlington and hoping she will keep

:57:32. > :57:38.going. At the halfway turn in this final of the women's 800m freestyle.

:57:38. > :57:43.And Katie Ledecky, the 15-year-old from the USA has gone up very fast

:57:43. > :57:51.indeed. Rebecca Adlington is second, right on her own world records.

:57:51. > :58:00.Lotte Friis of Denmark, just on the shoulder of Rebecca. I expected it

:58:00. > :58:10.did it -- expected it to be the other way around with those two.

:58:10. > :58:11.

:58:11. > :58:18.Rebecca has to start moving now. is not easy to do. Katie Ledecky is

:58:18. > :58:24.probably 0.2 other second faster than Becky and Lotte Friis. In the

:58:24. > :58:34.Beijing race we remember so well, the next two, 100 so Rebecca slowed

:58:34. > :58:34.

:58:34. > :58:37.down a little bit. The pace is punishing for her even. Just six

:58:37. > :58:43.lands the left and if they are going to start moving they will

:58:43. > :58:48.have to go now because Katie Ledecky is getting away. She is

:58:48. > :58:53.maybe about three metres ahead of Rebecca Adlington and Lotte Friis.

:58:53. > :58:59.They will have to move together. Maybe they will work together to

:58:59. > :59:04.catch up with Katie Ledecky. Rebecca is starting to move back in

:59:04. > :59:10.the field a bit. I am starting to get worried. Come a long, use the

:59:10. > :59:20.five metres underwater and go. think Rebecca Love de bit sluggish

:59:20. > :59:24.

:59:24. > :59:32.in that last 100m. -- looked a bit. The pace Katie Ledecky is swimming

:59:32. > :59:38.after is faster than it Rebecca Adlington and Lotte Friis.

:59:38. > :59:45.loans to go. Katie Ledecky still on record beating pace. -- four

:59:45. > :59:55.lengths to go. Coming back now is Belmont see. She has already won

:59:55. > :59:59.the 200m at but to my -- butterfly silver medal. She is moving. This

:59:59. > :00:05.is dangerous. Rebecca might slip into a different medal colour and

:00:05. > :00:15.position. Rebecca is looking at the Ford and knows where Katie Ledecky

:00:15. > :00:15.

:00:15. > :00:22.is. I think the dream might be over. Nearly three seconds down, she is

:00:22. > :00:32.now scrapping for silver. Belmont the is on fire. This race it may

:00:32. > :00:40.not be over. The pace she is going is extraordinary. 100m to go. Two

:00:40. > :00:50.lends left in the final of this 800m freestyle for women at the

:00:50. > :00:54.Olympic games and London. Come on Rebecca Adlington. The stroke rate

:00:54. > :01:00.between Belmont and Adlington is different. I think they will finish

:01:00. > :01:08.in this position. The question is whether Katie Ledecky can hold on.

:01:08. > :01:11.You have to take your hat off to her. No reputation is sacred. This

:01:11. > :01:19.teenager has taking it to them. I think she will hold the world

:01:19. > :01:23.record. Rebecca Adlington came fast when she set the world record.

:01:23. > :01:29.Katie Ledecky looks like she is on its at the moment, she is kicking

:01:29. > :01:33.hard. She still has a long way to go to catch up and I think it will

:01:33. > :01:38.be bronze for Rebecca Adlington, her second bronze medal. Katie

:01:38. > :01:46.Ledecky, a big shock will win the gold medal in the women's 800m

:01:46. > :01:51.freestyle. It isn't a world record but it is a very good swim. Rebecca

:01:51. > :01:59.Adlington, her second bronze. A bit of a shock. She worked very hard. I

:01:59. > :02:04.do feel for her. Magnanimous in defeat, Rebecca Adlington. She is

:02:04. > :02:12.giving a big hug to Katie Ledecky of the USA. A worthy champion and

:02:12. > :02:16.very rarely a world record. Look at Rebecca. Bit a bit shocked face,

:02:16. > :02:25.bit of a smile. She is a great person, a great competitor and this

:02:25. > :02:31.will hurt. Her swim wasn't even on her own best times. She cannot

:02:31. > :02:36.control Katie Ledecky, she was out so quickly. Lotte Friis, she burned

:02:36. > :02:43.out and came in 5th. Once Lotte Friis let go of Rebecca Adlington,

:02:43. > :02:52.it was all over. Maybe a bit too much concentration from Rebecca are

:02:52. > :02:57.Lotte Friis, and Lotte Friis on Rebecca. Let's not take anything

:02:57. > :03:02.away from this young lady. She very nearly broke the world world --

:03:02. > :03:12.world records. The new Olympic champion of the women's 800m

:03:12. > :03:18.

:03:18. > :03:25.You gave it everything you possibly could question mark it was so

:03:25. > :03:33.painful. More painful the older I get. She is incredible, I think she

:03:33. > :03:40.is only young like 15. Well done. It is one of those things, the 800

:03:40. > :03:45.was my event. The pressure and everything, expectation going into

:03:45. > :03:49.this neat, has been a battle. I am so pleased, I would have liked the

:03:49. > :03:55.time to be better. I have been that time all year and I don't know what

:03:55. > :04:05.happened. Everything has caught up on me but I gave it my absolute all,

:04:05. > :04:11.I'm sorry I did not get the gold medal everybody was expecting. I

:04:11. > :04:16.hate it when people say that silver or bronze is losing, you have not

:04:16. > :04:23.done my sport! I hope the public realise this week and they are

:04:23. > :04:29.proud of me forget in the bronze. It -- proud of me for getting the

:04:29. > :04:35.bronze. Paul Rebecca Adlington, I think it hurt from the first land?

:04:35. > :04:40.Victories always heard more when you lose. She has been all over the

:04:40. > :04:45.papers, everybody expected. She likes to dictate the race and Katie

:04:45. > :04:50.Ledecky took it out. She nearly broke the world record. On that

:04:50. > :04:54.through Rebecca off her pace. I am gutted, it really hurts her. We

:04:54. > :04:58.thought it would be Rebecca Adlington and Lotte Friis, and it

:04:58. > :05:04.shows how wrong we can be. I am sure a lot of people around the

:05:04. > :05:13.country will be shocked. But we have a number of very young

:05:13. > :05:19.swimmers, Shiwen Ye being one of them, and Katie Ledecky another.

:05:19. > :05:29.Let's hear from Katie Ledecky now. Congratulations. He just went for

:05:29. > :05:31.

:05:31. > :05:35.I went out, controlled, tried to get out there. You did a huge PB at

:05:35. > :05:42.the American trials, another huge PB. How much time have you knocked

:05:42. > :05:46.off this year? I think at the end of last August I was 8.35, so I

:05:46. > :05:51.have said some good short-term and long-term goals and have been

:05:51. > :05:57.putting in a lot in training. I have learned had to train hard and

:05:57. > :06:01.trained fast. It has paid off, incredibly. Age means that you come

:06:01. > :06:07.in with these big guys and they do not faze you, you have nothing to

:06:07. > :06:12.lose? This crowd was incredible here for Rebecca. I tried to calm

:06:12. > :06:16.myself. I was let's -- a lot less nervous for this race than previous

:06:16. > :06:21.ones. Being in a race with those great goals was incredible. Well

:06:21. > :06:31.done. Thank you. It is the first major championship

:06:31. > :06:37.

:06:37. > :06:47.that Katie Ledecky has this one, pool. The United States with ten

:06:47. > :06:47.

:06:47. > :06:56.more gold than China. This time, it is two bronzes for Becky Adlington

:06:56. > :07:00.We feel like our balloons have been popped, don't we? That is what the

:07:00. > :07:04.Olympics are about, new names, new stars. The young ones have made bit

:07:04. > :07:08.upset. It is another glory of victory and admitting that

:07:08. > :07:12.sometimes you are just not good enough. It is the contrast between

:07:12. > :07:15.victory and failure and it is only a bronze that we can offer you from

:07:15. > :07:19.Rebecca Adlington, but Supreme offer -- at that nonetheless. We

:07:19. > :07:26.will be back, we have more to come this evening.

:07:26. > :07:29.Thanks, it is not too bad. Two bronzes, a bit of perspective. I am

:07:29. > :07:35.joined by Ian Thorpe and Denise Lewis. A word on Rebecca Adlington.

:07:35. > :07:39.She was never really in it, was she? Ledecky Swan so well. The we

:07:39. > :07:44.all feel a bit deflated after that. We wanted to see the gold medal

:07:44. > :07:48.especially force British swimming in the pool. Rebecca swang -- swam

:07:48. > :07:51.well at the start of the race but the unpredictable factor was

:07:51. > :07:57.Ledecky from America. We did not know much about her coming into

:07:57. > :08:02.this competition. That speed at the front may have shocked Rebekka,

:08:02. > :08:07.knowing that her regular competitor Lotte Friis is on the other side,

:08:07. > :08:14.in control of that position but not in control of the American.

:08:14. > :08:16.couple of young swimmers, we saw the Chinese come we saw questions

:08:16. > :08:25.about her, I don't suppose the same questions will be asked about

:08:25. > :08:29.Ledecky? In a year she has dropped 20 seconds. Let's do it as a ten

:08:29. > :08:32.second drop and a comparison, it is a bigger improvement. This is why I

:08:32. > :08:36.do not think it is beneficial when we talk about people using their

:08:36. > :08:40.names or their nationality because we start doing and us and them

:08:40. > :08:42.think, it removes all points of perspective and we can't have an

:08:42. > :08:48.intelligent conversation about it. These are age groups winners that

:08:48. > :08:52.are making each group type improvement. The track and field

:08:52. > :08:55.events got under way this morning. The scene of the opening ceremony

:08:55. > :08:59.was clear and all set for a magnificent week of athletics. Out

:08:59. > :09:03.in front of a packed house was Jessica Ennis. The first two events

:09:03. > :09:13.in the heptathlon other 100 metres hurdles and the high jump. This is

:09:13. > :09:16.

:09:16. > :09:25.shoulders of Jessica Ennis. Jessica Ennis has got the potential to set

:09:25. > :09:30.this stadium alight. This is one of her favourite events. Jessica got

:09:30. > :09:40.away to a good start. Jessica Ennis is being closed down but she is

:09:40. > :09:48.beginning to pull away on the inside. This is a tremendous run.

:09:48. > :09:55.Oh, my goodness! Wow! The fastest time ever by a heptathlete any more

:09:55. > :09:58.tea event of. What a star of the British team. I am speechless, when

:09:58. > :10:03.I crossed the line I had to double- check. I could not believe it was

:10:03. > :10:09.that time. A temporary shower, don't worry. The sun is shining

:10:09. > :10:14.that the Olympics still. This would be a fantastic

:10:14. > :10:24.achievement for Jessica Ennis. 1.86. Her first attempt, listen to the

:10:24. > :10:29.

:10:29. > :10:33.crowd. She missed the take-off all my goodness. Well, within a split

:10:33. > :10:43.second the whole crowd thought she had cleared it and then a massive

:10:43. > :10:56.

:10:56. > :11:03.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE. Jessica Ennis leads the heptathlon

:11:03. > :11:11.competition by 25 points. 8.16 is not bad, it is not too bad, and I

:11:11. > :11:15.think I am a few points up so it is A terrific start, particularly in

:11:15. > :11:20.the hurdles. She would have dreamt of that. It was an incredible

:11:20. > :11:25.performance, just electrifying. Not only the crowd but her on the track,

:11:25. > :11:29.has start was sensational. She annihilated the field, basically. I

:11:29. > :11:33.don't think she would have imagined that she could run quite so fast,

:11:33. > :11:38.but the conditions were very favourable. The track is quick. She

:11:38. > :11:42.just put everything together. It was a dream start for her. The high

:11:42. > :11:49.jump, how would you evaluate that? Par for the cause? I am sure she

:11:49. > :11:53.would have liked to have done 1.8 denied but 1.86 is OK, it is steady.

:11:53. > :11:57.It is where she would like to be, going into the next event. It is

:11:57. > :12:02.where does that sit with that with her other competitors, that is the

:12:02. > :12:06.danger. The Lithuanian had a good high jump this morning, setting a

:12:06. > :12:10.new personal best at one point 92 and that is way you start to get a

:12:10. > :12:15.bit nervous and wonder what the future and the next few events hold.

:12:15. > :12:18.You mentioned the next event, let's get to it. The third of the seven

:12:18. > :12:28.disciplines is the shot put, currently taking place in the

:12:28. > :12:28.

:12:29. > :12:32.Olympic Stadium. Let's catch up She has thrown a couple of lifetime

:12:32. > :12:39.bests this year, so she should be confident of repeating that

:12:39. > :12:41.performance. She hits it. It certainly is a longer, that is

:12:41. > :12:51.thumbs up from everybody in the commentary box and the crowd like

:12:51. > :12:52.

:12:52. > :12:57.it as well. Toni Minichiello trying to get instant feedback. She sits

:12:57. > :13:01.low and drives up with her legs. She does not look strong, but I

:13:01. > :13:06.tell you what, she really packs a punch on that for guilt -- on that

:13:06. > :13:13.for kg shot. She has to stay as close as she can to the leaders in

:13:13. > :13:20.the shot put and she has done that, 14.28 is much better from Jessica.

:13:20. > :13:24.At crucial throw for Nataliya Dobrynska, the defending champion

:13:24. > :13:32.in danger of being eliminated. Oh, yes, it is, but far less distance

:13:32. > :13:37.than she would have hoped for. Nataliya Dobrynska, having problems

:13:37. > :13:44.with her shot. She is not driving her hit -- hip through or hitting

:13:44. > :13:50.it straight. She is slicing it to the right hand side. That is one of

:13:50. > :14:00.her strongest events and she has not performed well, 15.05 for

:14:00. > :14:03.

:14:03. > :14:09.round but had a long throw in the first round. She loses her balance.

:14:09. > :14:16.A composure at the back of the circle. A big effort. Oh, my

:14:16. > :14:22.goodness. She is a tall Lithuanian. Her coach likes that one. She did

:14:22. > :14:26.very well in the high jump this morning. She put everything into

:14:26. > :14:29.that and that is certainly going to close the gap on everybody,

:14:29. > :14:34.including Jessica Ennis. That is one of the longest throws I have

:14:35. > :14:39.ever seen in heptathlon. For me, she looks as though she has lost a

:14:39. > :14:46.bit of weight from previous years. Her high jump showed that. 17.31,

:14:46. > :14:53.it is coming at -- coming up as a world best. Chernova wants to win

:14:53. > :14:57.the Olympic title, she is going to have to blast this one out. 218

:14:57. > :15:00.points behind Jessica Ennis before this event and Jessica Ennis has

:15:00. > :15:10.extended the difference between herself and the big Russian. That

:15:10. > :15:15.

:15:15. > :15:19.there. That was a far better throws and the last one we saw, much

:15:20. > :15:24.better than her first two. As an indication of how this might go,

:15:24. > :15:27.our statistician added up their personal bests and Chernova was

:15:27. > :15:37.only 30 points behind, an improvement. Don't write the

:15:37. > :15:43.

:15:43. > :15:49.heptathlon, Scope what of Lithuania. -- Skujyte. Jessica Ennis is in the

:15:49. > :15:59.second place, for the first time in the heptathlon. Schwarzkopf has

:15:59. > :16:00.

:16:00. > :16:04.risen up the table, as has Well, Jessica Ennis has lost her

:16:04. > :16:10.lead. This is the moment you tell us, don't panic. Don't panic, it is

:16:10. > :16:16.expected. That was her best shot put ever? We expect her to throw

:16:16. > :16:21.big, the Lithuanian -- Lithuanian is a big girl, she in has a shot

:16:21. > :16:25.put background. What I wanted to see what does was Jessica Ennis

:16:25. > :16:31.clapped throw close to her personal best. It is damage limitation. She

:16:31. > :16:38.was down on what I expected. But fear not, her 200 metres is to come.

:16:38. > :16:43.Expect Jessica to court -- to claw that deficit back. But Skujyte

:16:43. > :16:48.looks in good shape. Just Jess Ennis need to lead overnight, if

:16:48. > :16:52.she is to win gold? Her best events are on the first day. I would

:16:52. > :16:58.prefer to see her leading. She needs that buffer. She may not,

:16:58. > :17:02.that is the danger. Her second day is inconsistent. She has been

:17:02. > :17:06.working on the javelin, but the long jump is the event that will

:17:06. > :17:13.really set this competition alight and we will know more tomorrow.

:17:13. > :17:17.need a good 200 metres. We do. let's go back inside the athletics

:17:17. > :17:21.stadium and join John Inverdale. He is hovering over my shoulder.

:17:21. > :17:24.Absolutely, beautiful blue sky, a packed house, an amazing others

:17:24. > :17:27.fear for the first night of athletics and over the next couple

:17:27. > :17:31.of hours we will round up what you have missed over the last hour or

:17:31. > :17:36.so. Whatever is happening in the pool and at Eton today, for a lot

:17:37. > :17:40.of people the abiding memories of Olympics past are of track and

:17:40. > :17:50.field events. What will happen in this stadium over the next nine

:17:50. > :17:56.

:17:56. > :18:06.nights that will find its way into effortless ease. It is a second

:18:06. > :18:07.

:18:07. > :18:12.gold. What a performance. History is being made. Carl Lewis, on his

:18:12. > :18:17.way to four gold medals. Sebastian Coe, back at his best, the Olympic

:18:17. > :18:23.champion away. Never stopping, coming up on the inside. Christine

:18:23. > :18:33.Ohuruogu takes the gold medal. Daley Thompson, the greatest all-

:18:33. > :18:40.round athlete in the world. I have got the big chief. -- the big gold.

:18:40. > :18:50.He wins it. Denise Lewis is the Olympic champion. El Guerrouj is

:18:50. > :18:51.

:18:51. > :19:01.going to get there, come on! He has got it! He has got it! It is

:19:01. > :19:02.

:19:02. > :19:09.Linford Christie! Good gracious me. Gold for freeman. The nation

:19:09. > :19:18.expected. Mark Lewis-Francis gets it, I think. I said, anything could

:19:18. > :19:25.happen. Tessa Sanderson, she knows, we know it, the gold medal is hers.

:19:25. > :19:33.And the world record has gone. This man surely is not a human! Good

:19:33. > :19:43.speed, good rhythm, and it is long, it is long. Edwards is number one.

:19:43. > :19:45.

:19:45. > :19:48.Great moments from Olympics past and with as is Colin Jackson and

:19:48. > :19:54.Michael Johnson, as ever, the single greatest moment in athletics

:19:54. > :20:00.Olympic history for you is? Beamon in the long jump, still the

:20:00. > :20:04.Olympic record, set in 1968. That is tough to beat. Jesse Owens.

:20:04. > :20:08.Hitler's Olympics, incredible pressure. Because of the pressure.

:20:08. > :20:14.He came through in four events, threw it into Hitler's face,

:20:14. > :20:18.incredible. I wasn't there! wasn't there either. We have seen

:20:18. > :20:21.it often enough. Let's move on, lots has happened here this evening.

:20:21. > :20:24.They had the preliminaries of the women's 100 metres this morning,

:20:24. > :20:28.which allowed a lot of people from the smaller nations to have their

:20:28. > :20:31.moment of fame in this fantastic stadium, but it got serious tonight.

:20:31. > :20:41.These are the heats of the women's 100 metres which began about seven

:20:41. > :20:44.

:20:44. > :20:54.round proper of the women's 100m. We have the preliminary is this

:20:54. > :21:17.

:21:17. > :21:27.The Trinidadian just eases away. That is a good start, it is the

:21:27. > :21:29.

:21:29. > :21:33.first round. 10.96, winning time the Kelly-Ann Baptiste. A quick

:21:33. > :21:43.start to this Round 1 in the women's 100.

:21:43. > :22:12.

:24:22. > :24:36.

:24:36. > :24:41.Never have so many heats in 100m being crime's -- crammed into such

:24:41. > :24:51.a brief time scale. Colin, from a British perspective, one through

:24:51. > :24:52.

:24:52. > :24:56.and one out? The good thing is to see Abi get through. We know she

:24:56. > :25:05.struggled through the trials with injury and we were wondering if she

:25:05. > :25:11.would get through these races. She has arrived here in very good shape.

:25:11. > :25:16.Laura is just off her a season's best. So that is a fair result.

:25:16. > :25:22.Michael, for the big guns it is sparring but nobody landing a

:25:22. > :25:27.knockout blow? They run incredibly fast for the first round. I'm not

:25:27. > :25:33.big on the fast track, slow track thing, but this track is obviously

:25:33. > :25:39.pretty quick. So many of them under 11 seconds, we are set up to a very

:25:39. > :25:46.fast final and semi-final. Carl Lewis was a guest a couple of

:25:46. > :25:54.nights ago saying, he is missing the fast track, slow track thing.

:25:54. > :26:03.He said there are fast athletes and slow athletes, we did dispute that?

:26:03. > :26:10.There are fast athletes on slow tracks. This is a minimal, what you

:26:10. > :26:15.would call a fast track and a slow track. Maybe the weather is helping

:26:15. > :26:25.because it is perfect condition tonight. We have the heats of the

:26:25. > :26:35.

:26:35. > :26:45.men's 1,500m. This is what happened Rosemarie step up to the plate? He

:26:45. > :26:49.

:26:49. > :26:56.has shown great composure. That -- Ross Murray. They are settling and

:26:56. > :27:06.there is a bit of pace early on, Brendan? They are going to slowly.

:27:06. > :27:14.They are concentrated in such a small area it is difficult. Kick

:27:14. > :27:20.proper is giving himself a clear run by going on the outside. If the

:27:20. > :27:30.pace keeps lifting, it is better. It is much better for these

:27:30. > :27:33.

:27:33. > :27:42.athletes when they are running closer to some 60 seconds.

:27:42. > :27:47.Russian lead them out. Then the youngster from Qatar following him.

:27:47. > :27:54.Ross Murray in a decent position. Don't be too put off if you think

:27:54. > :28:04.he is struggling a little bit. He cannot uncomfortable, but when he

:28:04. > :28:18.

:28:18. > :28:22.unleashes a bit of speed in the One of two tailing off. Then they

:28:22. > :28:30.are bunching, Brendan and this is a dangerous time because at Murray

:28:30. > :28:36.needs to get into a position to strike? MORI from Gateshead

:28:36. > :28:42.Harriers is finding himself in the middle of a pack of athletes. --

:28:42. > :28:49.Ross Murray. He has a dozen athletes in front of him at the

:28:49. > :28:57.moment and needs to find a way through. He is next to Gregson on

:28:57. > :29:02.the inside. He is making it harder for himself. He hasn't got to panic.

:29:02. > :29:12.He has to try and get as close as he can and be strong on the last

:29:12. > :29:15.

:29:15. > :29:25.lap. He is in a good position now so he can strike from there. First

:29:25. > :29:41.

:29:51. > :30:11.

:30:11. > :30:15.will qualify. It is the Algerian who wins it. Rosemarie goes through.

:30:15. > :30:21.-- Ross Murray. He didn't panic, things looked a bit messy in the

:30:21. > :30:25.middle of the race. He got himself into a couple of difficult

:30:25. > :30:35.positions, but he has so much pace and ability he got himself out of

:30:35. > :30:41.Overall, where does that rate? was up with the best. When I came

:30:41. > :30:46.out, everyone was cheering. I didn't know what to do, I didn't

:30:46. > :30:54.know whether to waive. I didn't do anything, I thought I would just

:30:54. > :31:04.embrace it. I was overwhelmed. Words cannot explain. How much did

:31:04. > :31:12.it inspires you in the race? When I went past someone, the crowd went

:31:12. > :31:21.mad. And I thought, this is a heat! It is the best I have ran. It felt

:31:21. > :31:27.good. There was a bit of bunching and barging? I clipped someone a

:31:27. > :31:34.few times. It is part of Championship racing. I bet that you

:31:34. > :31:40.are glad your mum persuaded to to carry on rather than be a holiday

:31:40. > :31:48.rep? Absolutely, nothing to stop me going off on holiday after the

:31:48. > :31:52.Olympics and enjoying myself. From one happy man, to Andy Murray.

:31:52. > :32:00.An extraordinary day at Wimbledon and semi-finals day in the Olympic

:32:05. > :32:11.set for the right to play Roger Federer in the final after his

:32:12. > :32:19.unbelievable victory against Del Potro. 19-17 in the third set. The

:32:25. > :32:30.longest ever three-set match. If you want to watch the quarter-final

:32:30. > :32:40.of the women's football against Canada it is on for review. We have

:32:40. > :32:54.

:32:54. > :33:04.seen the first heat of the men's goes in this heat. There is also a

:33:04. > :33:11.

:33:12. > :33:16.magnificent que Tahri athlete, 17 moment in red. Andrew Baddeley

:33:16. > :33:21.running for Great Britain. He was an Olympic finalist last time

:33:21. > :33:26.around. Had an indifferent year but I think he is ready for this one.

:33:26. > :33:29.We had just heard from Ross married that day's -- how exciting it is

:33:29. > :33:36.for these athletes to be cheered all the way around by this

:33:37. > :33:45.wonderful crowd of 80,000 people in the stadium. One thing is, they are

:33:45. > :33:52.all giving their best. It is a good steady opening. He has put himself

:33:52. > :33:57.there, keeping an eye on the other athletes. He just has to position

:33:57. > :34:02.himself, work out his position between now and the bell. Silas

:34:02. > :34:06.Kiplagat had a Tripp, but was fortunate. He has decided he wants

:34:06. > :34:12.to be away from it. And he is not happy with too many athletes around

:34:12. > :34:22.him. He has been outstanding this year. Andy Baddeley still not

:34:22. > :34:27.

:34:27. > :34:32.responding. Two laps to go in this second heat of the men's 1,500m.

:34:33. > :34:41.Silas Kiplagat, the Kenyan has ran the second-fastest time in the

:34:52. > :34:56.up the other young athlete from Qatar. The Oldfield is ahead of

:34:56. > :35:01.Andy Baddeley. He has to work his way now. He has to be careful he

:35:01. > :35:07.doesn't give them too much start when the bell sounds. The pace is

:35:07. > :35:13.quite strong but not strong enough yet. It is gathering now. The

:35:13. > :35:23.Ethiopian is running strongly. Silas Kiplagat coming up in third

:35:23. > :35:23.

:35:23. > :35:33.place. Andy Baddeley is on the outside and has a clear view ahead

:35:33. > :35:39.

:35:39. > :35:43.of him. When he gets going, he can Andrew Baddeley has seven athletes

:35:43. > :35:49.ahead of him. He needs to finish inside the first six. There he goes,

:35:49. > :35:54.moving up the outside. He needs to keep that move going. The Turkish

:35:54. > :36:01.athlete, we haven't mentioned him. He is getting ahead of everybody

:36:01. > :36:06.including Silas Kiplagat. Andrew Baddeley moving into 4th place.

:36:06. > :36:10.There is a fantastic teenager challenging false start he does not

:36:10. > :36:16.know how to lose at junior level. Will it be the same at senior

:36:16. > :36:23.level? Andrew Baddeley in 6th place. He will qualify automatically for

:36:23. > :36:31.the semi-finals. 3.39, slower than the first heat but Andrew Baddeley

:36:31. > :36:35.Impressions, the Olympic champion and world champion, what did you

:36:35. > :36:38.make of could prop? He is the champion. It will be easy to get

:36:38. > :36:42.through these first round sand into the final. He did not have any

:36:42. > :36:45.problems today. He will be the favoured going into the final and

:36:45. > :36:49.he will probably win it. It is not a really tough field for him,

:36:49. > :36:53.honestly. From a British perspective, postman safely

:36:53. > :37:00.through? That is the most important thing for us. -- both men safely

:37:00. > :37:06.through. A great run by Murray. Really passionate with the crowd,

:37:06. > :37:10.pushing as the past to prop of. The crowd are behind our team members

:37:10. > :37:13.and it is making a difference. Both are boys are through. We are

:37:13. > :37:18.looking forward to finding out what is happening with the other Murray

:37:18. > :37:25.in a minute. Here at the Olympic Stadium we have the women's 10,000-

:37:25. > :37:31.metre final coming up at the end of the evening, at 9:25pm. Jo Pavey

:37:31. > :37:35.and Bleasdale is in bad. You can watch the shot put Channel, any

:37:35. > :37:39.single final in the field, you can watch a big throw or jump during

:37:39. > :37:43.the course of these Games. The men's shot put is that traditional

:37:43. > :37:46.first gold medal awarded and you could watch that on one of our

:37:46. > :37:53.channels that you know all about. That is it from us for the moment.

:37:53. > :37:58.Back here in the stadium in a It has been a spectacular day for

:37:58. > :38:02.Team GB, with three more gold medal successes. One at Eton Dorney and

:38:03. > :38:09.two at the Velodrome. Andy Murray could win a gold medal as well.

:38:09. > :38:16.Because he has reached the final. He has beaten Novak Djokovic in two

:38:16. > :38:20.straight sets, 7-5 in the second, that was the Match Point and now he

:38:20. > :38:24.faces Roger Federer, a repeat of the Wimbledon final. A different

:38:24. > :38:29.result, I hope. The final will be over five sets. Every other game at

:38:29. > :38:32.the Olympics is over three. The best of three. The final is five

:38:32. > :38:38.sets. They are going to do it all again. Will it be a different

:38:38. > :38:44.result this time? Federer went through earlier, winning his final

:38:44. > :38:52.set by 19-17. Against Juan Martin Del Potro. It is Federer against

:38:52. > :39:02.Murray again, the sequel. Great scenes and emotion. That customary

:39:07. > :39:12.look up at this guy from Andy Team GB are up to 4th place. Things

:39:12. > :39:20.are going remarkably well. China are within hours sights and so are

:41:08. > :41:12.took the lead early, kept it going and held on for dear life. She

:41:12. > :41:17.wanted it so badly. Great emotion there, lovely to see her singing

:41:17. > :41:23.the national anthem. A triumph of Victoria Pendleton, yet again. More

:41:23. > :41:28.to come, maybe, we shall see. Lovely scenes there. Inside the

:41:28. > :41:32.Velodrome. A great atmosphere, one of the places to be, I think, in

:41:32. > :41:38.this fantastic Olympic Village that we have got here. Also we have seen

:41:38. > :41:42.some terrific races in the Aquatics Centre. Let's see 4-2 more with

:41:42. > :41:46.Clare Balding. I have to be sorry if I sounded

:41:46. > :41:50.negative about Rebekka's achievement, of course a bronze

:41:50. > :41:54.medal it fabulous and she is the most successful British swimmer

:41:54. > :42:00.ever with two golds in Beijing at two bronzes here in Britain. We

:42:00. > :42:05.felt disappointed for her because we hope to... We hoped for her.

:42:05. > :42:08.That was the thing. There was so much pressure on her. The fact it

:42:08. > :42:12.was down to Lotte Friis and herself, we were nervous. We were

:42:12. > :42:17.disappointed for her. If that had been two bronzes in Beijing the

:42:17. > :42:20.would have been over the moon. Let's put in reality. It is our

:42:20. > :42:24.expectation, that is what she said she had been battling with, the

:42:24. > :42:28.pressure coming from us coping and thinking, so I am sorry if it came

:42:28. > :42:35.from us. It was not intended. The race was on to be the fastest man

:42:35. > :42:39.in the Paul, the 50m freestyle. It is your event. It was. It is about

:42:39. > :42:42.getting the start right, the entry, getting into your stride properly

:42:43. > :42:47.and he to the finish. It will be fractions of seconds from the top

:42:47. > :42:52.to the bottom. There is a lot of world record holders and x world

:42:52. > :43:02.record holders. -- and ex-world record holders. There will be

:43:02. > :43:08.

:43:08. > :43:18.fractions separating the guys. water. The final of the men's 50-

:43:18. > :43:27.

:43:28. > :43:31.metre freestyle. I like the look of them go. I don't know what you do

:43:31. > :43:37.there, because he is not meant to bang the gun and tell everybody is

:43:37. > :43:42.still. Jones looking good, going well in seven. -- going well in

:43:42. > :43:49.seven is Manaudou in France. I think it is going to be Manaudou.

:43:49. > :43:55.By getting there, he has got it! The Olympic champion, Manaudou, in

:43:55. > :44:01.his first senior final and he has won it. Look! Oh my goodness me. Oh,

:44:01. > :44:09.my goodness me. You just would never have thought that. 21.34. You

:44:09. > :44:14.would never have thought that. Tell me? Oh, man, how did he win that?

:44:15. > :44:18.Well, he was winning pretty much all the way. Near the bottom of the

:44:18. > :44:22.picture, he stayed down longer than the rest of them, came up in the

:44:22. > :44:29.lead at 15 metres and never loses the race. He was in the lead all

:44:29. > :44:38.the way. That has stunned me, I am stunned. I am absolutely stunned.

:44:38. > :44:42.He has won by 0.2 of a second. Look at that. Not 0.2. That is huge.

:44:42. > :44:51.This is just amazing, the silver going to Jones of the USA and the

:44:52. > :44:56.world record holder only getting What a reaction from the big man,

:44:56. > :45:02.Manaudou. I know his coach quite well and he said he was on form.

:45:02. > :45:07.When you go through the heats and semis, you give it everything. He

:45:07. > :45:12.is the fastest man on the planet. What about the fastest woman on the

:45:12. > :45:17.planet? We have two semi-finals for the 50-metre freestyle. The first

:45:17. > :45:27.featured Great Britain's Amy Smith her, who got in after a swim off

:45:27. > :45:35.

:45:35. > :45:40.of that one, the first semi-final of the women's and 50-metre

:45:40. > :45:45.freestyle. Amy Smith on the left Thameside. She started well. She is

:45:45. > :45:49.leading with 25 metres to go. Amy Smith is leading. Come on, Amy

:45:49. > :45:56.Smith, wind it up. Wouldn't it be something she could make the final?

:45:56. > :46:06.Come on, a business. Everyone is coming back. -- come on, Amy Smith.

:46:06. > :46:18.

:46:18. > :46:23.Smith, I'm afraid to tell you, I think six, even though it would

:46:23. > :46:30.close, will not be enough. Well, about more 0.6 of a second

:46:30. > :46:40.separating that all those women. -- about 0.6 of a second separating

:46:40. > :46:54.

:46:54. > :46:59.all those women. Less than a second, very good heat this morning. Let's

:47:00. > :47:09.repeated. It would be good to see her go 24.5 or lower, just to be

:47:10. > :47:10.

:47:10. > :47:15.women's 50-metre freestyle at the Olympic Games and friend hands --

:47:15. > :47:22.and Fran Halsall had a good start. And really fast turnover. Ranomi

:47:22. > :47:28.Kromowidjojo is going well in four. Lane six is going fast. Ranomi

:47:28. > :47:36.Kromowidjojo looks good. Powering away. This looks very good indeed.

:47:36. > :47:46.24.0, Ranomi Kromowidjojo wins it. Second is the Belarus swimmer. Fran

:47:46. > :47:47.

:47:47. > :47:55.Halsall, third. 24.83, or set 24.63 -- or is that 24.63? That is as low

:47:55. > :47:59.a semi-final. It is a bit -- it is a bit slower. We have the

:47:59. > :48:03.aggravated -- the aggregated scores of both semi-finals. Ranomi

:48:03. > :48:13.Kromowidjojo is dominant. She is going to go into the final ahead of

:48:13. > :48:21.

:48:21. > :48:27.the field. Down at the bottom, lane she is into the final -- Fran

:48:27. > :48:35.Halsall. Really close. Amy Smith may have missed out. I think she

:48:35. > :48:39.has missed out by it 161 hundredth of a second. Imogen on the 100

:48:39. > :48:46.freestyle, the women going that fast as well, on the turn, the wave

:48:46. > :48:50.is there and it hits you. result of the second semi-final,

:48:50. > :48:57.Ranomi Kromowidjojo winning it. Fran Halsall was third. A solid

:48:57. > :49:05.swim. To get a medal, she will have to go 24.3, or 24.2, something like

:49:05. > :49:10.That final is going to be a blink between second and third? Yes, it

:49:10. > :49:15.is all to play for. I got in, I did that. I will rest and see what

:49:15. > :49:20.happens tomorrow. We need a big one. It would be fantastic. Rebecca has

:49:20. > :49:24.given as much as she can. She will be disappointed, won't she? I don't

:49:24. > :49:29.know what she will be disappointed about, she is the most successful

:49:29. > :49:32.swimmer of all time. I would two of my arm to get a bronze medal. She

:49:32. > :49:37.is inspirational. The rest of the team think she is inspirational.

:49:37. > :49:42.Amazing. A fantastic example, I know she has personal standards

:49:42. > :49:48.that are high, does she? Amy Smith, you have been unlucky today.

:49:48. > :49:51.don't know what it is, the 50 freestyle does not like be much. No

:49:51. > :49:56.swim off unfortunately this time. It is a good time, similar to what

:49:56. > :50:02.I did this morning. I can't complain. It is the right place,

:50:02. > :50:07.close to my best. What do you think is it going to take -- what do you

:50:07. > :50:12.think it is going to take? His time irrelevant? Is it just a race?

:50:12. > :50:20.is irrelevant. I saw in the 100, I thought it would be quicker. I know

:50:20. > :50:25.I can hopefully go back down and do it again. It is going to be quick.

:50:25. > :50:30.All eight girls are capable of swimming 24. Close your eyes and

:50:30. > :50:34.hope for the best on the finish. I will be pumped up for it tomorrow.

:50:34. > :50:44.It has to be my turn at some point. It must be your turn, I hope

:50:44. > :50:44.

:50:44. > :50:49.Fans saying the right thing about Rebecca Adlington. The medal

:50:49. > :50:53.ceremony has just happened and this was her reaction as she stepped up

:50:53. > :51:03.to receive her bronze medal and this reaction from the crowd.

:51:03. > :51:03.

:51:03. > :51:11.She is overcome with the emotion of it all. The pressure was so much

:51:11. > :51:18.and it is all coming out now. That support has meant so much. There is

:51:18. > :51:25.her mum and dad. She is so amazing. It is just awful to see her that

:51:25. > :51:32.upset and we feel for her. Michael Phelps extended his own extended --

:51:32. > :51:37.extraordinary record by winning the 100m butterfly. He becomes the

:51:37. > :51:46.first man to win two difference events in the pool, three Olympics

:51:46. > :51:54.running. And also on that podium was Chad le Clos. His dad has

:51:54. > :52:02.become a bit of a hit. You are almost as well-known, welcome back.

:52:02. > :52:12.Thanks very much. Your son, is the star of the Olympic games? It is

:52:12. > :52:14.

:52:14. > :52:20.unbelievable. How have you found London 20 told? British are the

:52:20. > :52:24.best. They are the best supporters, they are gentlemen. I have been

:52:24. > :52:33.around the world and I have never seen people like this in my life.

:52:33. > :52:38.It is unbelievable. The people who talk to you in the streets,

:52:38. > :52:48.unbelievable. That they are brilliant. I had a woman who said

:52:48. > :52:49.

:52:49. > :52:57.to me, can I have a photograph with you and my baby. I pick the baby up

:52:57. > :53:04.and I said your baby won't like my big phase. And the baby cried.

:53:04. > :53:06.is it from the swimming pool tonight. Congratulations to Missy

:53:06. > :53:14.Franklin and Michael Phelps and congratulations to Rebecca

:53:15. > :53:24.Adlington. Two bronze medals to add to her tally.

:53:25. > :53:27.

:53:27. > :53:32.He is brilliant isn't the. We seek Debbie Phelps, and Chad le Clos.

:53:32. > :53:38.Watching his reaction to his son winning the race. He was pipped

:53:38. > :53:42.again by Michael Phelps. We were talking, early on in the swimming

:53:42. > :53:49.he did not look at his best and we were worried we had seen the best

:53:49. > :53:54.of Michael Phelps. He has won more medals than any other man? We were

:53:54. > :54:01.stunned the first night when he came 4th. Everyone was in shock. He

:54:01. > :54:08.has been stronger over the shorter differences. His 200 was great and

:54:08. > :54:13.it set him up nicely for this final. He is the most successful this

:54:13. > :54:18.winner at this meat itself. It is still the best in the swimming pool,

:54:18. > :54:26.even though he has had a disappointing time. And also

:54:26. > :54:33.Manaudou, he won the freestyle? was out there. His sister was also

:54:33. > :54:38.an Olympic champion over longer distances. That was a great

:54:38. > :54:43.performance in front of the world record holder. The French have done

:54:43. > :54:49.well over all in the swimming pool. Let's go back to John Inverdale at

:54:49. > :54:56.the athletics. It is the 200m 4th discipline of the heptathlon.

:54:56. > :55:02.Denise Lewis has joined us in the studio here. This is the second of

:55:02. > :55:06.these heats. Jessica Ennis will be going in the last. You were talking

:55:06. > :55:11.about how confident you were, but do you have reservations of where

:55:11. > :55:17.she sits, second after three disciplines? The problem is, we

:55:18. > :55:27.have underestimated the opposition. We thought the danger women wells

:55:27. > :55:37.were. We just have to keep an eye on her. -- danger women were

:55:37. > :55:38.

:55:38. > :55:43.elsewhere. We are seeing Louise haver in the shot. How important is

:55:43. > :55:49.it, psychological for Jessica Ennis to lead going into Myra? She needs

:55:49. > :55:54.it, she absolutely does. She doesn't want to have to force

:55:54. > :55:58.yourself in the long jump. It is critical at the moment. The next 15

:55:58. > :56:08.minutes could be crucial for Jessica Ennis's gold medal

:56:08. > :56:11.

:56:12. > :56:21.ambitions. She is not running in result. But the leader, Austra

:56:22. > :56:25.

:56:25. > :56:35.Skujyte Sir, has a 64 point lead over Jessica Ennis. And scorch pop

:56:35. > :56:41.

:56:41. > :56:49.-- Lily score spot. There she is, Austra Skujyte sake, she finds

:56:49. > :56:58.herself in the second race. Jessica Ennis is in the final race. There

:56:58. > :57:04.is Louise hazel. Receiving rapturous applause. In 37th place,

:57:04. > :57:14.only one athlete behind her in the competition. She will want to hold

:57:14. > :57:15.

:57:15. > :57:21.her head up high in this 200m. But Austra Skujyte to an Natalia

:57:22. > :57:31.Dobrynska or in this heat. Athletes in contention for the medals in

:57:32. > :57:51.

:57:51. > :57:57.this race. Austra Skujyte To has a out of the blocks. This is a good

:57:57. > :58:04.performance from a British athlete. Natalia Dobrynska trying to get

:58:04. > :58:10.into second. It is all about Louise, this will give her a lift. Just

:58:10. > :58:16.outside her a season's best. That is better, it has been a

:58:16. > :58:21.disappointing first day but at least it finishes on a high. And

:58:21. > :58:30.Astra's Goethe, her time is not that impressive. Not building on

:58:30. > :58:35.the brilliant shot put from the Lithuanian. Louise hazel, it has

:58:35. > :58:40.been a difficult day, but that is a great way to finish it off. It will

:58:40. > :58:46.give her huge confidence going into the first event tomorrow. You have

:58:46. > :58:55.the defending champion, Natalia Dobrynska in there as well. Louise

:58:55. > :59:01.hazel absolutely blasted the first 100m. 24.4 th is not a bad time.

:59:01. > :59:06.Natalia Dobrynska or really gritting her teeth. Louise hazel,

:59:06. > :59:11.the Birchfield Harrier, fighting her way across the line. You cannot

:59:11. > :59:18.ask for more than that. Watch Natalia Dobrynska on the left hand

:59:18. > :59:25.side. Louise hazel looking comfortable. Just about at this

:59:25. > :59:31.point, then she began to tire a little bit. Three events tomorrow,

:59:31. > :59:35.long jump, javelin and 800m at the end. Total concentration and great

:59:35. > :59:41.focus from Louise hazel. Certainly looked a lot more comfortable in

:59:41. > :59:51.this event than she did in the shot put about an hour and a half ago.

:59:51. > :00:19.

:00:19. > :00:26.pace. She will fall a way after men's shot put final. This will be

:00:26. > :00:30.the first gold medal awarded in the track and field at London 2012. He

:00:30. > :00:40.started great are the German. A new personal best. It will take some

:00:40. > :00:44.

:00:44. > :00:54.beating. He responded brilliantly, and the Polish athlete in the

:00:54. > :00:54.

:00:54. > :01:37.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 110 seconds

:01:37. > :01:41.metres and a team in the first 200m heat. Looking far more

:01:41. > :01:51.comfortable. Better than she has looked all they've. It was a great

:01:51. > :01:53.

:01:53. > :01:57.Paul Dickenson St that is the best you looked all day in that race,

:01:57. > :02:04.and it is glad to finish a disappointing day and a high?

:02:04. > :02:09.always nice to go out and beat the reigning Olympic champion. Assess

:02:09. > :02:18.your day, it did not go as well as you wanted? I wanted to run a bit

:02:18. > :02:28.faster, but not a problem. My high jump was a disaster. Time to redeem

:02:28. > :02:28.

:02:28. > :02:33.myself and came out in the shot put. My coach was happy and smiling. And

:02:33. > :02:39.then a decent run in the 200. I wanted to show I am a fighter and I

:02:39. > :02:43.can come back from setbacks. It is the Olympic games so you always

:02:43. > :02:49.want to do well. But sometimes it is not always the way it goes, but

:02:49. > :02:54.we do have some more events. What is your sense of the overall

:02:54. > :02:59.competition and the kind of pressure Jessica is under? Everyone

:02:59. > :03:04.is doing great performances. You cannot tell who will pop up on the

:03:04. > :03:10.day, who will be in form and who will be off. It is still all to

:03:10. > :03:20.play for. Jessica has a really good medal hope. Especially the gold.

:03:20. > :03:20.

:03:20. > :04:02.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 110 seconds

:04:02. > :04:06.Louise hazel ran earlier. Of course, we will have to wait until heat

:04:06. > :04:14.five before we can give you the overall situation, once all the

:04:14. > :04:24.points have been tallied up. The athlete and in lane eight, the

:04:24. > :04:50.

:04:50. > :04:58.fastest time this year is the Latvian. 24.36, compared with that

:04:58. > :05:08.Jessica Ennis's best time and it shows the difference in class. Bits

:05:08. > :05:23.

:05:23. > :05:33.of a wobble at the start by the standings, she needed a good time.

:05:33. > :05:37.

:05:37. > :05:43.That is a massive, massive lifetime What a way to finish the first day

:05:43. > :05:49.of Olympic competition, absolutely spot on. And doing it the hard way,

:05:49. > :05:59.out there in lane nine, and nobody in eight. Just had to concentrate

:05:59. > :06:00.

:06:00. > :06:09.on her own efforts. Well done to her. Er so got third in the end,

:06:09. > :06:17.she was fighting to get through. Third round of this man's shot put.

:06:17. > :06:27.David store, just improved his lead by a couple of centimetres. Well,

:06:27. > :06:41.

:06:41. > :06:47.that is peppering the the D-Mark of at the end of the third round. 12

:06:47. > :06:52.go to eight, then they throw in reverse order. There is a great

:06:52. > :06:58.psychological advantage in being able to throw when someone else has

:06:58. > :07:02.finished. The Olympic champion is in the lead by one centimetre! So,

:07:02. > :07:12.Reese Hoffa, in bronze medal position at the moment. But still

:07:12. > :07:13.

:07:13. > :07:23.early days. At his best, 22.43. Oh the 21 metres for the first time in

:07:23. > :07:43.

:07:43. > :07:49.this competition, it won't is the world champion, one

:07:49. > :07:54.centimetre behind the Olympic champion. And of course he has

:07:54. > :08:03.already improved his personal best in this competition, with a 21.86.

:08:03. > :08:06.If he wants to become Olympic champion he has to do it again.

:08:06. > :08:12.Majewski went through a series of major championships, at every one

:08:12. > :08:15.he always through a personal best. If he does become the Olympic

:08:15. > :08:25.champion, I think he will become one of the youngest Olympic

:08:25. > :08:47.

:08:47. > :08:57.the men's long jump qualification. This is Greg Rutherford in the

:08:57. > :09:02.

:09:02. > :09:10.well behind the board, but really encouraging from the core British

:09:10. > :09:15.record holder. -- equalled British record holder. Tomlinson put

:09:15. > :09:22.himself under a bit of pressure, the athlete suffering from a

:09:23. > :09:29.swirling wind. 8.06, that put him safely through to the final, in 4th

:09:29. > :09:39.place. A little prayer. It is the defending Olympic champion,

:09:39. > :09:55.

:09:55. > :10:02.defending champion is out. A very, A little grin. What does the

:10:02. > :10:10.Olympic champion make of that? But good news for Britain, we will have

:10:10. > :10:15.two in the final, both, I think, with the chance of a medal. Only

:10:15. > :10:25.two athlete made that automatic qualification. Only six athletes

:10:25. > :10:31.

:10:31. > :10:39.went over eight metres, but the the outside in this 4th heat of the

:10:39. > :10:49.200 metres of the heptathlon. A good 200 he could push her right up

:10:49. > :11:02.

:11:02. > :11:12.to rankings, in fact it could push just seen the Swiss athlete in the

:11:12. > :11:27.

:11:27. > :11:33.Fountain is setting the pace. The Ukrainian, just putting some

:11:33. > :11:42.pressure on Fountain. The two of them, having a right battle. She

:11:42. > :11:46.might just win it, she would visit in 23.64, that is a season's best.

:11:46. > :11:51.A slide following wind, that will be enough to put her, temporarily,

:11:51. > :11:55.in the lead in this heptathlon. But of course, Jessica Ennis and others

:11:55. > :12:05.to come in the last 200 metres heat. A good run from the American,

:12:05. > :12:07.

:12:07. > :12:12.though. Another 1000 points score. This time from the American, 1016

:12:12. > :12:21.points. Fountain really afford for this one, because she was under a

:12:21. > :12:25.lot of that pressure. We have still got the fastest athlete to come,

:12:25. > :12:29.and the fastest of the more is still Jessica Ennis on paper. I

:12:29. > :12:32.have got the feeling she might fly round this track and produce

:12:32. > :12:36.something pretty special, in the same way she did in the hurdles

:12:37. > :12:46.this morning. Fountain, totally focused on the track in front of

:12:47. > :12:54.

:12:54. > :12:58.How would you assess the day it overall? Are started off really

:12:58. > :13:04.well, the hurdles and the high jump went pretty decent for me. I had a

:13:04. > :13:11.personal best in the hurdles. But the shock it always gets me. I am

:13:11. > :13:16.not a young cookie any more! I'm actually feeling it. But I've got

:13:16. > :13:21.tomorrow, so it two of my favourite events. What has it been like being

:13:21. > :13:24.part of this seething cauldron, everybody focused on Jessica Ennis?

:13:25. > :13:30.This is always an amazing experience, not many people can say

:13:30. > :13:34.they have hinted at two Olympics, and I'm just happy to be where I am.

:13:34. > :13:39.Do you think you can be in the mix of Tamara? Definitely. You never

:13:39. > :13:49.know what is going to happen. It is anyone's day. All the very best.

:13:49. > :14:15.

:14:15. > :14:21.focusing on in just a few moments time -- the athlete. Jessica Ennis

:14:21. > :14:29.Get Set. Her last event on day one of this enthralling heptathlon

:14:29. > :14:36.competition. On paper, she has the fastest time. But it is. That she

:14:36. > :14:42.will want added to her total, and she has already achieved 3062

:14:42. > :14:51.points, if she whizzes around the track fleet-footed, who knows how

:14:51. > :15:01.many points she could accumulate. If she can get under 23 seconds,

:15:01. > :15:11.

:15:11. > :15:21.she would get a massive 1079 points, learning curve of her life here, in

:15:21. > :15:23.

:15:23. > :15:33.front of so many people. She had a magnificent high jump early on

:15:33. > :15:48.

:15:48. > :15:58.of the best in the Commonwealth. Listen to the roar for Jessica

:15:58. > :16:11.

:16:11. > :16:21.finally, Johnson - Thompson of and such a talented all-around

:16:21. > :16:33.

:16:33. > :16:43.the Canadian. Jessica Ennis will want to finish on top of the table

:16:43. > :17:15.

:17:15. > :17:25.Belgian. Pretty nifty, 23.4 39 in this year, that was a lifetime best.

:17:25. > :17:31.

:17:31. > :17:37.heat. The world champion, inside and out, beat Jessica Ennis on both

:17:37. > :17:45.occasions. If she can run quickly, she will set up the perfect

:17:45. > :17:52.platform for a very strong second day. And the fastest woman in the

:17:53. > :17:57.field is this athlete in Elaine two, from the Netherlands. She actually

:17:57. > :18:07.beat Jessica Ennis went Jessica Ennis broker Denise Lewis's British

:18:07. > :18:12.

:18:12. > :18:20.superlative fashion. The fastest ever 100 metres hurdles in a

:18:20. > :18:27.naughty event competition by this woman. -- multi- event. Can she

:18:28. > :18:37.finish off in the same rich vein of form? Two British athletes in this

:18:38. > :18:52.

:18:52. > :18:56.driving around the bend. She is flying. The Canadian next to her is

:18:56. > :19:01.having a good run. Right on the inside, there Dutch athlete is

:19:01. > :19:07.flying as well. Jessica Ennis is closing it down, it is going to be

:19:07. > :19:15.a tiny gap. Jessica Ennis may have just nicked it on the line to make

:19:15. > :19:23.his past, as well. -- it is fast, as well. And the crowd carried her

:19:23. > :19:29.home. Pretty 2.83 is a fabulous time in the heptathlon. It could

:19:29. > :19:34.bring her, if she is confirmed as the winner, 1096 points. And that

:19:34. > :19:42.would be a marvellous, marvellous finish at today one, and it would

:19:42. > :19:50.be another lifetime best. You have to hand it to her, there was a bit

:19:50. > :19:53.of cut from her, it may be a personal best, it may be -- the

:19:53. > :19:59.Dutch after it wasn't too far away from the individual medals in the

:19:59. > :20:04.200 metre. But Jessica Ennis, storming down the home straight,

:20:04. > :20:11.with every metre, eating up into that lead, and right on the line,

:20:11. > :20:15.just about get there. They have been given the same time. It

:20:16. > :20:19.doesn't really matter, it is about the time, and it is a personal best.

:20:19. > :20:24.More points than she has ever had before in this event. That is what

:20:24. > :20:28.she needed. A little bit of a head wind in the home straight, but none

:20:28. > :20:38.the less, this is a good end to what has been a pretty good first

:20:38. > :20:40.

:20:40. > :20:49.spot, but it will be interesting to know if she thought she could go a

:20:49. > :20:54.bit quicker. You can never be disappointed with a personal best

:20:54. > :21:01.but she has been in such fine form. The time is exactly the same as

:21:01. > :21:11.Dafne Schippers, worth 1096 points. A personal best for her, and a

:21:11. > :21:20.

:21:20. > :21:28.personal best also for Katarina INAUDIBLE. Microphone problem...

:21:28. > :21:34.Wait a second. APPLAUSE. Let's start again! They are cheering

:21:34. > :21:40.because they have just seen that Jessica has gone into the lead, a

:21:40. > :21:44.tremendous day, and you finished with a personal best. I am so

:21:44. > :21:49.pleased to end the day with that, knowing it was a fast track with

:21:49. > :21:54.the hurdles, and running with Dafne Schippers, she is an amazing

:21:54. > :22:00.sprinter, so I am made up to get a personal best of stock and the

:22:00. > :22:07.date? I am still in shock about the hurdles. The high jump was a little

:22:07. > :22:11.bit disappointing, the shot put a bit disappointed, but solid

:22:11. > :22:17.performances and two personal bests is brilliant. And what do you think

:22:17. > :22:24.of this lady? She is amazing. I will have to retire before she gets

:22:24. > :22:28.really, really good! Jess Ennis is under so much pressure. I am so

:22:28. > :22:33.happy to be part of this alongside her because she has an amazing

:22:33. > :22:41.score and I am loving every second of it. You have done yourself proud.

:22:41. > :22:45.Tomorrow, all three events to come. Long jump, javelin, 800m. Give me

:22:45. > :22:51.your assessment. I will have to have a really strong day tomorrow

:22:51. > :22:58.and make sure I have strong performances, Follett. I am glad I

:22:58. > :23:03.have got a good score under my belt but I have a lot to do tomorrow. It

:23:03. > :23:06.has been amazing. I know it sounds really cheesy but the crowd really

:23:07. > :23:11.lift you, when you are running around the bend and you can hear

:23:11. > :23:17.them, it makes a difference. Sorry for the microphone problems but it

:23:17. > :23:27.was worth the wait. Congratulations, and all were best for tomorrow.

:23:27. > :23:30.

:23:30. > :23:36.crossing the line in perfect unison. Big points for both of them.

:23:36. > :23:40.Katarina Johnson-Thompson, what a way to finish. Let's not forget

:23:40. > :23:46.Tatyana Chernova finishing in fourth, a good school for the

:23:46. > :23:56.Russian. The overall position will be fascinating -- a good score. No

:23:56. > :23:56.

:23:56. > :24:02.doubt, Jessica Ennis from Great Britain, with 4158 points. If my

:24:02. > :24:08.arithmetic is right, that is 45 points higher than at the same

:24:08. > :24:18.stage at the meeting earlier this year, where she smashed the British

:24:18. > :24:29.

:24:29. > :24:38.third place, with 3903 points. Hyleas Fountain is in 5th place. I

:24:38. > :24:47.think Dobrynska is intent. Tatyana Chernova has moved up a long wait

:24:47. > :24:52.in fourth place. -- Dobrynska is in It is the most fantastic atmosphere

:24:52. > :24:57.tonight. They have a really good stadium announcer, keeping

:24:57. > :25:01.everybody in touch. There was a massive cheer about Victoria

:25:01. > :25:05.Pendleton and Andy Murray, but the biggest cheer of the night was four

:25:05. > :25:13.when the scoreboard went up to show that Jess Ennis was top of the

:25:13. > :25:18.leaderboard -- was four when. You are smiling, Denise! Yes. It is

:25:18. > :25:25.perfect. Just what she needed. It was really tense. You have to

:25:25. > :25:31.remember, these girls are very tired. The track is quick, and Jess

:25:31. > :25:36.Ennis knew exactly what she needed to do and she did it. Michael?

:25:36. > :25:40.is a little scary because she started out so well and at the end

:25:40. > :25:44.of the day, she is getting a personal best in the events that

:25:44. > :25:50.she is good at but she is a little bit inconsistent in the other

:25:50. > :25:56.events, so tomorrow, two that she is a bit inconsistent in, and

:25:56. > :26:00.another that she is good at, 800m, so it is a little bit scary. She

:26:00. > :26:06.finished where she needed to today but I am a little concerned about

:26:06. > :26:13.tomorrow. I don't think tomorrow is scary, by the way. You are here to

:26:13. > :26:17.talk about the 10,000m, but what about Jessica? It has been

:26:17. > :26:21.fantastic. This morning, unbelievable. To have 80,000 people

:26:22. > :26:28.in this stadium, and the cheering has been astounding. We should be

:26:28. > :26:34.proud of us. Seb Coe was a runner and we are claiming him back now.

:26:34. > :26:40.He has done a hell of a job. Two of the great women distance runners of

:26:40. > :26:44.all time in the 10,000m. Certainly, and she could be part of real

:26:44. > :26:51.history. Only six women have ever one three Olympic gold medals and

:26:51. > :26:55.tonight she could join that. Tirunesh Dibaba is the Jessica

:26:55. > :27:01.Ennis of Ethiopia, even though they do not have celebrities like we do

:27:01. > :27:07.in this country. Tirunesh Dibaba and Vivien Cherry yet. The latter

:27:07. > :27:13.is the world champion at 5,000m, 10,000m and Cross Country, and

:27:13. > :27:21.Tirunesh Dibaba is the reigning champion at the 5,000m and 10,000m

:27:21. > :27:24.in the Olympics. Vivian Cheruiyot qualified for the World Cross

:27:24. > :27:29.Country Championships at 13 and was not allowed to compete because she

:27:30. > :27:36.was too young, and then completed when she was 17 in Sydney. Is that

:27:36. > :27:41.innate talent? She has huge talent. The thing about distance runner,

:27:41. > :27:45.the distance running in Kenya, it is a factory. Thousands of them are

:27:45. > :27:51.training and the athletes are getting more and more refined, and

:27:51. > :28:01.it is a route to success. I think tonight will be a real classic.

:28:01. > :28:01.

:28:01. > :28:08.Tirunesh Dibaba is a fantastic lady. She has not won a championship race

:28:08. > :28:15.in four years, so let's see. McColgan one a silver medal in 1988

:28:15. > :28:20.in Seoul. -- Liz McColgan won. Pavey has done very well to get

:28:20. > :28:30.here. Not many distance runners do, so well done to Jo. Let's join the

:28:30. > :28:35.

:28:35. > :28:45.line with all of the other athletes waiting to get under way. Mouth-

:28:45. > :29:09.

:29:09. > :29:13.out on a medal in Helsinki. It is great to see Jo here. I was in

:29:13. > :29:17.Portugal for a few days with the British team, and I was chatting to

:29:17. > :29:22.Jo, and she says she has been waiting for this or quite a while

:29:22. > :29:27.of course. At one time she was hoping to come and run the marathon

:29:27. > :29:32.at the Olympic Games but it did not work out. She has been one of our

:29:32. > :29:41.most talented athletes, running everything from the 1,500m up to

:29:41. > :29:46.the marathon. She will be hoping to run the 5,000m as well, as well

:29:46. > :29:52.Julia Bleasdale. 25 laps. I have heard people on occasion say, you

:29:52. > :29:57.might get bored watching that. We won't and we hope you won't either.

:29:57. > :30:02.Even in the early laps, whether they are quick or slow, it can

:30:02. > :30:12.determine what happens in the end. Julia Bleasdale is having the

:30:12. > :30:29.

:30:29. > :30:39.Ethiopia, and that will be replicated tomorrow night for

:30:39. > :30:40.

:30:40. > :30:45.Bekele. I think Tirunesh Dibaba is in the same position as Bekele. If

:30:45. > :30:53.she wants to run the fastest, she might have to win this. She is only

:30:53. > :30:58.the reserves for the 5,000m, would you believe it! The real head to

:30:58. > :31:04.head, classic head-to-head, but with two women who, whatever

:31:04. > :31:09.happens tonight, will go down as a couple of the all-time greats, but

:31:09. > :31:19.particularly Tirunesh Dibaba. Four gold medals at this distance, world

:31:19. > :31:19.

:31:19. > :31:25.championships and Olympic Games. These last few nervous moments,

:31:25. > :31:32.even though it is 25 laps. They will be nervous and they were just

:31:32. > :31:39.want to get on with it now. -- and they will just want. Cool

:31:39. > :31:47.conditions, probably perfect running 10,000m. I wonder whether

:31:47. > :31:53.the injury it will have any plan in her mind -- whether Vivienne

:31:53. > :32:01.Cheruiyot will have any plans in her mind. She will hope she has a

:32:01. > :32:06.good sprint finish to beat Tirunesh Dibaba. We haven't seen Tirunesh

:32:06. > :32:14.Dibaba win in a few years, so this is an intriguing race in prospect

:32:14. > :32:20.for me. The supporting cast opposite of those athletes, perhaps

:32:20. > :32:30.not as strong as it has been in the past -- the supporting cast for

:32:30. > :32:39.both of those athletes. Brendan, we were chatting upstairs about those

:32:39. > :32:43.two. I was going to ask where your money lies but is it too close?

:32:43. > :32:53.would love to see Tirunesh Dibaba win this one. She has been a great

:32:53. > :33:01.

:33:01. > :33:10.and has had some injury troubles since then, but we have seen some

:33:10. > :33:19.signs this year that she is back to her best. She got married in 2008.

:33:19. > :33:25.He is the silver 2000 medallist in the 10,000m! 30,000 people arrived

:33:25. > :33:33.at the National Stadium in Addis Ababa were in Ethiopia to watch

:33:33. > :33:38.them being driven around in an open-top car! There is Cheruiyot.

:33:38. > :33:48.She has been unbeatable in the years since Tirunesh Dibaba's

:33:48. > :33:54.

:33:54. > :34:03.danger, too. She has a quick finish. She is coached by Mark Rowland in

:34:03. > :34:13.Oregon. I was on about the kind of support cast. Not one of the

:34:13. > :34:23.

:34:23. > :34:30.runner, 30 years of age, good on the track. Her best goes all the

:34:30. > :34:40.way back to 2003, 30 minutes and seven seconds. And there is Jo

:34:40. > :34:41.

:34:41. > :34:51.Pavey! She had Gavin, her husband, and young Jacob out with her in

:34:51. > :35:00.

:35:00. > :35:06.Portugal. Nice and relaxed and to get some more room! I am not

:35:06. > :35:11.sure that was necessary. The first track final of these Olympic Games.

:35:11. > :35:17.I am pleased to say that it is pretty much still a full house. I

:35:17. > :35:21.am sure they are going to be treated to a cracking race. I am

:35:21. > :35:27.sure. When these athletes get together and run on the circuit and

:35:27. > :35:30.come to run the big 10,000m, they are usually with pacemakers. No

:35:30. > :35:34.pacemakers declared before the race, but the Japanese have decided that

:35:34. > :35:39.since it was going to be an opportunity for them with these

:35:39. > :35:49.conditions, they are not going to hang around. They know about the

:35:49. > :35:55.finish of the African athletes, and the two stars, so they are seen

:35:55. > :36:02.what they can do, if they can get a decent time. You were talking about

:36:02. > :36:07.1988, the first four editions of these women's 10,000m finals, and

:36:07. > :36:12.there were fairly even races, but it was even paced all the way

:36:12. > :36:16.through until the last lap, but in the last couple of editions, people

:36:16. > :36:24.have been prepared not to wait until the last lap. It has been

:36:24. > :36:29.more like the men's races, where it is a slow first 5,000m but a much

:36:29. > :36:34.quicker second part, much like the men's. Yes, it is on a wing of the

:36:34. > :36:44.way, steady early pace, building and building -- it is following the

:36:44. > :36:52.

:36:52. > :37:02.from Ireland is following the Japanese athletes, quickly joining

:37:02. > :37:05.the group of the Japanese trio. But the talent is in the second group.

:37:05. > :37:10.I noticed Jo Pavey is making her way through to the front of the

:37:10. > :37:16.second group. These athletes don't get many chances to run top-class

:37:16. > :37:20.10,000 metres races, and Jo Pavey has decided, if I am going to go my

:37:20. > :37:26.way, I will finish as high as I possibly can, the best way to do it

:37:26. > :37:32.is to have a strong race. The three Kenyans are moving up alongside her,

:37:32. > :37:37.the race is starting to unfold and the tactics are being revealed. But

:37:37. > :37:46.the two stars of this event are both fantastic finishers, Tirunesh

:37:46. > :37:54.Dibaba are and Vivian Cheruiyot. Look, it has spread out very

:37:54. > :38:01.quickly now. Interesting, isn't it. Chepkurui, just putting her foot

:38:01. > :38:11.down a little bit. It is almost like the Kenyans are how riders for

:38:11. > :38:21.the Ethiopian sometimes. -- the Ethiopians. The whole field is now

:38:21. > :38:24.

:38:24. > :38:29.in touch with the leading grid. The first couple of laps were run at a

:38:29. > :38:35.pace of 31 minutes. That will be interesting, whether they keep

:38:35. > :38:42.running at this 31 minute pace for a couple of laps, or whether the

:38:43. > :38:46.second half will really speed up. Very early stages, just all running

:38:46. > :38:53.single file now, but interesting of the three Japanese athletes have

:38:53. > :38:58.come with a bit of a game plan. think their game plan is obvious,

:38:58. > :39:03.to run and get a decent time. At Leeds measured their performances

:39:03. > :39:13.in two factors, if they don't finish in the first three or four,

:39:13. > :39:13.

:39:13. > :39:17.you might at least get a decent time out of bed. -- out of it. The

:39:17. > :39:27.athletes are getting going, the pace is just beginning to lift a

:39:27. > :39:27.

:39:27. > :39:37.little. Now we go to the shot put. Just four athlete left to throw,

:39:37. > :39:47.

:39:47. > :39:50.this is the leader, the leading -- displaced Reese Hoffa from the

:39:50. > :40:00.bronze medal position? Whatever happens, Reese Hoffa has the chance

:40:00. > :40:28.

:40:28. > :40:38.to respond. So much St still leads. for the world No. 1. The only two

:40:38. > :41:07.

:41:07. > :41:15.men to be under -- over 22 metres pace, 3.06 per the first 1000

:41:15. > :41:22.metres. Still running just inside her 31 minute pace, and still we

:41:22. > :41:32.have the three Japanese after Leeds at the front. -- Japanese athletes

:41:32. > :41:37.

:41:37. > :41:44.Just one try stands between Tomasz Majewski retaining his Olympic

:41:44. > :41:53.title, and it is David store, his final throw. It is not good enough.

:41:53. > :41:59.He has got a silver medal. This man has retained his Olympic title. It

:41:59. > :42:09.has been quite a couple of years. He will have another go in Rio,

:42:09. > :42:22.

:42:22. > :42:28.without any question. Majewski is up. But still not much change in

:42:28. > :42:36.this 10,000 metres final. Tirunesh Dibaba has kept itself well away

:42:36. > :42:41.from the lead, which has been held right from the start by these three.

:42:41. > :42:48.It has been impressive, the fact that they have kicked on for about

:42:48. > :42:58.six laps, almost identical times. We said there were no pacemakers,

:42:58. > :42:58.

:42:59. > :43:08.they are doing a pretty good job of being pacemakers. It is good pace,

:43:09. > :43:33.

:43:33. > :43:40.season of transition, Finola a real go of this. Settling in

:43:40. > :43:48.nicely there. I can see the great Tirunesh Dibaba moving up,

:43:48. > :43:58.following her instantly. There she is, in the strip of Ethiopia, and

:43:58. > :43:59.

:43:59. > :44:03.inches behind her, Vivian Cheruiyot moves up. Dibaba, looking up at the

:44:03. > :44:06.big screen. At the moment she sees some Polish flags, but she hopes by

:44:06. > :44:10.the time she gets further round, the big screen will be revealing

:44:10. > :44:16.what is happening further down the field. That is important these days,

:44:16. > :44:20.the athletes can use the big screen to their advantage. Another 1000

:44:20. > :44:27.metres completed in three minutes and six seconds, the pace has been

:44:27. > :44:37.metronomic. That is why there has been no change it so far in this

:44:37. > :44:38.

:44:38. > :44:45.lovely feeling, he knows he has retained his Olympic title. -- the

:44:45. > :44:55.last throw. With a bit of a flourish, it measured at 21.89

:44:55. > :44:59.

:44:59. > :45:07.Olympic shot-put title. What a moment for the big man from Poland.

:45:07. > :45:10.This will be some lap of honour, I would imagine. I hope he doesn't

:45:10. > :45:17.run into any of the 10,000 metres runners! It would be like tenpin

:45:17. > :45:21.bowling. When he set off on his lap of honour, I was looking around to

:45:21. > :45:27.see where run the track he was, because the 10,000 metres runners

:45:27. > :45:32.were coming habit close to him! Jonathan is right, that isn't a

:45:32. > :45:42.collision that would have come off well for the distance runners!

:45:42. > :45:55.

:45:55. > :46:01.starts to drop off a little bed. -- a little bit. Chepkurui is moving

:46:01. > :46:07.up, we have got Dibaba on the outside, anywhere that she goes,

:46:07. > :46:14.Vivian Cheruiyot follows. Vivian Cheruiyot, never been more than two

:46:14. > :46:18.strides away, they are great rivals. I think this is warming up now, we

:46:18. > :46:27.can see one of the Japanese at Leeds now struggling to stay with

:46:27. > :46:32.this. A lot of these athletes, sub 31 is a bit of a push. The other

:46:32. > :46:37.Ethiopian athlete, the more experienced Ethiopian athlete, 30

:46:37. > :46:39.years of age, she has won 21 medals at the World cross-country

:46:39. > :46:45.Championships, she has been outstanding, moving through into

:46:45. > :46:53.third place. It is a bit like the cycling, when they look to see who

:46:53. > :46:58.it is at that is moving through, they decide whether to go with them.

:46:58. > :47:05.You say, OK, I'm not letting her get away with it. And here comes

:47:05. > :47:15.Tirunesh Dibaba, moving up, sees the gap opening, look at them, they

:47:15. > :47:25.

:47:25. > :47:28.are scampering behind her to get exactly 31 minute pace. And I know

:47:28. > :47:36.they will finish faster than that, because they are going to be racing

:47:36. > :47:42.in the second half of this race, building up nicely. Some of the

:47:42. > :47:48.athletes are tiring, I am delighted to see Jo Pavey down the back

:47:48. > :47:53.straight, Julia Bleasdale is running very, very well. I know Jo

:47:53. > :47:57.Pavey is following it Julia Bleasdale, she has progressed so

:47:57. > :48:07.much this season, she is in her element with world class athletes

:48:07. > :48:08.

:48:08. > :48:14.all around her, she is in the right place mentally. It looks as though

:48:14. > :48:24.she is going to a bit of a bad patch, the Irish runner. -- going

:48:24. > :48:27.

:48:28. > :48:37.through. Jo Pavey moves towards the taking away from Japan, and passes

:48:37. > :48:43.to Kenya. It was yet another 74 second lap. Now they are wanting to

:48:43. > :48:49.start to control things a bit. It is interesting that Cheruiyot has

:48:49. > :48:53.gone past Dibaba for the first time as well. I think many think her

:48:53. > :48:57.tactic would have been just to watch and wait and let the youth

:48:57. > :49:03.Europeans try and make something happen, it may well be -- led the

:49:03. > :49:08.Ethiopians are trying make something happen. They can be in a

:49:08. > :49:15.position to try and force it, Chepkurui is leading, they are

:49:15. > :49:22.starting to bunch again. Dibaba, not fazed by any of that. Just

:49:22. > :49:27.sitting comfortably in 6th place now. But there is nothing that has

:49:27. > :49:31.really happened yet, no change of pace, this might be a bit of a

:49:31. > :49:37.slower lap. I think the Kenyans are just trying to control this Addis

:49:37. > :49:43.point. I think that is exactly what they are doing. Divya Cheruiyot is

:49:43. > :49:49.looking for any evidence of tiredness, they conceded close-ups

:49:49. > :49:56.on that board, but at the end of the day, that was 76 seconds, we

:49:56. > :50:00.write, that was a slower lap. Here comes Kipyego, the other Kenyan,

:50:00. > :50:05.moving through. It is starting to become a familiar sight, three

:50:05. > :50:09.Kenyans at the front of the women's 10,000 metres. A race they have

:50:09. > :50:19.never won before, one of the few distance races the Kenyans have

:50:19. > :50:20.

:50:20. > :50:24.never won. At this time, I was talking to dip came out, there Bath,

:50:24. > :50:27.-- their boss, and he says he wants them to win more medals than they

:50:27. > :50:37.have ever won before. Maybe they are going to do that. Is this race

:50:37. > :50:51.

:50:51. > :51:01.Kenyan athlete who certainly hasn't been as part of the system, I

:51:01. > :51:04.

:51:04. > :51:14.hesitate to call it a system, Sally, coached by a Mark Rowland. A great

:51:14. > :51:18.

:51:18. > :51:27.British steeplechaser and, 1988. She is the first to put has it down.

:51:27. > :51:31.Kidane in second. Then Dibaba, then not far away Cheruiyot. That was

:51:31. > :51:37.the quickest lap by a good three seconds but it was five seconds

:51:37. > :51:41.quicker than the previous lap. An injection of pace. Jo Pavey is

:51:41. > :51:51.still there. Julie Ian Bleasdale having a cracking race in the

:51:51. > :51:55.Olympic final. -- Julia Bleasdale. They are in single file now. The

:51:55. > :52:05.last time I saw Dibaba, it is a memory they will be aware of, in

:52:05. > :52:06.

:52:06. > :52:12.New York earlier this season, Dibaba ran for minutes, 4.5 in the

:52:12. > :52:16.last 1,500m, and that is something you have to be scared of. It is not

:52:16. > :52:23.just the last lap, it is what she can do in the last three laps that

:52:23. > :52:29.is significant. A 71-second lap there. Three Kenyans in the leading

:52:29. > :52:35.group, three Ethiopians in the leading group, and the 7th athlete

:52:35. > :52:39.is from Bahrain, formerly an Ethiopian athlete as well, so the

:52:39. > :52:44.first seven are from that part of Africa. Julia Bleasdale is close-up

:52:44. > :52:50.behind, she is running well. The pace at the moment is strong but it

:52:50. > :52:55.is not too much for these athletes. For Julia and Jo, this is good for

:52:55. > :52:59.them, this pace, if they can live with it. It is not excessive. They

:52:59. > :53:04.have done really well to stay with it. When they come down the

:53:04. > :53:09.finishing straight, they are starting to look at a lap number

:53:09. > :53:15.that is more comfortable on the mind. When you see it 10 laps to go,

:53:15. > :53:20.you think, that is OK. It starts to feel as though you are in some sort

:53:20. > :53:25.of territory. The first seven athletes are breaking away from the

:53:25. > :53:35.Japanese athletes, who did so well in the early stages. That was the

:53:35. > :53:42.quickest kilometre of the race so far. Three minutes. 30 minutes, 55,

:53:42. > :53:51.that sort of pace. The pressure continues to be applied. Cheruiyot

:53:51. > :53:59.has a look to see who is behind her. His Dibaba there? And yes, she is.

:53:59. > :54:06.But so off three Kenyan athletes. - - but so of three. For the first

:54:06. > :54:11.time, the big gaps start to appear. Jo Pavey and Julie Ian Bleasdale, I

:54:11. > :54:15.am sure, will have their own British battle after this -- Julia

:54:15. > :54:24.Bleasdale. They will want to try to keep this pace but as it goes up

:54:24. > :54:31.and down and up and down, this is when it starts to get tough. Jo is

:54:31. > :54:36.working hard to stay with her team- mate. Jo working hard and running

:54:36. > :54:41.well, Julia has prepared for this brilliantly. She has come on

:54:41. > :54:46.strongly this year. She is in contention in the Olympic final and

:54:46. > :54:51.that is almost a dream that she is having come to realisation, and it

:54:51. > :54:57.is a really good position she has worked to. Can she get in amongst

:54:57. > :55:03.the athletes in front of her? She is leading the European challenge,

:55:03. > :55:08.as is Jo Pavey, but the Africans, the Kenyans are moving to the front.

:55:08. > :55:13.Cheruiyot is there. When you prepare for a race like this,

:55:13. > :55:17.Cheruiyot, a world champion at 10,000m and 5,000m and world cross

:55:17. > :55:23.country champion, and when she looks at Dibaba, coming back from

:55:23. > :55:28.injury, wondering whether she has any weakness, is there a chink in

:55:28. > :55:38.the armour? At this point, that is when you will be asking these

:55:38. > :55:52.

:55:52. > :55:56.prepared to do the same as Tirunesh Dibaba. They are beginning to run

:55:56. > :56:06.steadily. It is not given too quickly. That was a 76-second lap,

:56:06. > :56:06.

:56:06. > :56:10.and that is why she took over, Kidane. I think that is what she is

:56:10. > :56:16.there to do. I think Dibaba is probably a bit frightened about

:56:16. > :56:20.being slow in the latter stages, and Cheruiyot being able to unleash

:56:20. > :56:25.what is still a very good kick. They have not really been tested

:56:25. > :56:29.against each other in recent times so I think Dibaba wants to keep up

:56:29. > :56:39.a hard place. Cheruiyot for me is looking a bit more as though she is

:56:39. > :56:46.

:56:46. > :56:54.under pressure. But that is because we had everything from 71-76, and

:56:54. > :56:59.Kidane is really putting her foot down here. Yes, she is stretching

:56:59. > :57:05.them now. Tirunesh Dibaba is the first to respond. Cheruiyot

:57:05. > :57:14.responds very quickly. The 68- second lap, that is whether damages

:57:14. > :57:20.coming from. Julia Bleasdale is running a great race, in eighth

:57:20. > :57:30.place. Jo Pavey in 9th race. The two British athletes are having a

:57:30. > :57:31.

:57:31. > :57:36.fantastic run. The Kenyan athlete, Chebkerue, standing on the inside

:57:36. > :57:40.of the track. This is a real baptism now because the race is

:57:40. > :57:47.starting to motor and gaps are opening. The medals are being

:57:47. > :57:57.shaken down. There is a group of four athletes. Three of those are

:57:57. > :58:01.

:58:01. > :58:09.the ones we would have expected. She has had a great career, Kdane,

:58:09. > :58:16.and is working hard. Tirunesh Dibaba in fourth place. Is the

:58:16. > :58:20.pressure beginning to tell on her? This is really interesting. You

:58:20. > :58:25.feel as though Cheruiyot does not know whether to latch on the back

:58:25. > :58:30.of their leader. She is wondering where Dibaba is. I think Dibaba

:58:30. > :58:40.would have wanted to be a little closer. This is boiling up into

:58:40. > :58:44.exactly the final that we hoped to see. Kidane, with every metre, is

:58:44. > :58:48.turning the screws, and not allowing them to settle. All of the

:58:48. > :58:53.years of the cross country running we spoke about, that strength is

:58:53. > :59:00.beginning to tell. She does not have the pace of Cheruiyot or

:59:00. > :59:04.Dibaba. This is the battle for 5th and 6th place. Further back, Julia

:59:04. > :59:14.Bleasdale trying to contest 7th place and Jo Pavey, not too far

:59:14. > :59:14.

:59:14. > :59:22.behind. But it is about these four now. Kidane, looking under a little

:59:22. > :59:29.bit of pressure now, with five laps to go, 2,000m. This is tough

:59:29. > :59:34.territory. 20 laps behind, five laps ahead. 71-second lap again,

:59:34. > :59:40.she has slowed a little bit. That is why they are catching her and

:59:40. > :59:48.that is why Cheruiyot finds herself in second place. Now it is decision

:59:48. > :59:53.time. Five laps. Do you press on? Or do you wait? Two Ethiopians, two

:59:53. > :00:02.Kenyans, the tradition of world distance running is being presented

:00:02. > :00:07.before us, and who will win it? The world champion, Vivienne Cheruiyot?

:00:07. > :00:12.The silver medallist from the world championships last year, Sally? The

:00:12. > :00:22.reigning Olympic championship who has not won since she won in

:00:22. > :00:25.

:00:25. > :00:32.Beijing four years ago, Dibaba? Or Kdiane, who one in Birmingham, --

:00:32. > :00:36.who won in Birmingham with the 10,000m? If Dibaba has any weakness,

:00:36. > :00:41.you would expect it to show itself over the next two laps, because

:00:41. > :00:51.when she gets within 800m of the gold, her fearsome finish will

:00:51. > :01:19.

:01:19. > :01:24.probably be the top of her mind. At the back. Is it between the front

:01:24. > :01:32.two or de back two? Everybody says it was between Cheruiyot and Dibaba,

:01:32. > :01:37.but they have got company here! Dibaba still looks comfortable, but

:01:37. > :01:42.so does Cheruiyot. Dibaba is sensing it is the time to move to

:01:42. > :01:48.the front. This is the closest the four of them have been for a few

:01:48. > :01:56.laps. Dibaba does not know what it is like to lose at 10,000m. Three

:01:56. > :02:06.laps to go. It is hard now. Kidane Has put them all under pressure.

:02:06. > :02:08.

:02:08. > :02:13.Who will have the pace at the end? Kipyego, she is doing her best but

:02:13. > :02:19.is it enough to put them under pressure? She is trying to win this

:02:19. > :02:28.one, I am pretty sure. Tirunesh Dibaba is too stabbing her way from

:02:28. > :02:38.fourth place into second place. Cheruiyot now, in the position.

:02:38. > :02:42.Kidane, who do that hard work, is still trying. The champion from

:02:42. > :02:50.four years ago is in a good position. The world champion behind

:02:50. > :02:58.her is in a good position. Sally Kipyego is making them both work

:02:58. > :03:02.for this one. Two laps to go in the women's 10,000m. Tirunesh Dibaba,

:03:02. > :03:07.who has been injured for the last couple of years and we have not

:03:07. > :03:17.seen her outstanding since Beijing, the world champion, in third place,

:03:17. > :03:19.

:03:19. > :03:26.Cheruiyot, and Kidane, still in contention, and Kipyego, who trains

:03:26. > :03:36.in America. Jo and Juliet are running well in this Olympic final.

:03:36. > :03:39.

:03:39. > :03:42.Four becomes three. Dibaba, Cheruiyot and Kipyego. Cheruiyot

:03:42. > :03:48.and Dibaba have raced each other since they were teenagers, since

:03:48. > :03:54.they were 15, and now for the first time, Dibaba decides the time is

:03:54. > :03:58.right to strike. Is it too early? This reminds me of the great race

:03:58. > :04:04.in Sydney between the great Haile Gebrselassie and Paul Tergat, and

:04:04. > :04:08.this time the champion, Tirunesh Dibaba, has stolen a few yards! She

:04:08. > :04:13.has put Cheruiyot under pressure, the first time we have seen Vivian

:04:13. > :04:21.under pressure for a long time! And now the great Tirunesh Dibaba looks

:04:21. > :04:30.to be on her way to another Olympic gold medal! The great athlete,

:04:30. > :04:39.alongside Haile Gebrselassie! She is on her way to a third gold

:04:39. > :04:44.medal! Looking fantastic! Kipyego, moving to a third place position,

:04:44. > :04:52.behind a disconsolate and Cheruiyot, who can do nothing about the power,

:04:52. > :04:56.the speed, the talent of Tirunesh Dibaba! She won the double in 2008,

:04:56. > :05:02.she has been missing from these championships for the last three

:05:02. > :05:07.years, but now she is back! She will retain her title in the most

:05:07. > :05:17.splendid style! Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia is the Olympic champion

:05:17. > :05:20.

:05:20. > :05:24.again! Eight gold-medal run of epic proportion in the end, 62 second

:05:24. > :05:28.62-second last lap! The statistics are not important. What is

:05:28. > :05:33.important is there could never have been any doubt that this woman

:05:33. > :05:38.would come and pick this title again! It has been a battle between

:05:38. > :05:44.the two British athletes! And Jo Pavey still has the pace at the end.

:05:44. > :05:54.It has been a good race for her and her and Juliet will be very proud

:05:54. > :05:56.

:05:56. > :06:02.of their performances. -- Julia. that you are in the presence of

:06:02. > :06:12.greatness. She already was, coming into this, an all-time great, but

:06:12. > :06:17.

:06:17. > :06:25.she has just underlined that even has every reason to celebrate.

:06:25. > :06:30.Kipyego ran a great light race -- race, but Tirunesh Dibaba, the 7th

:06:30. > :06:33.Attlee to win three Olympic gold medals individually, on her way to

:06:33. > :06:41.a third Olympic gold medal. A fantastic performance, a brilliant

:06:41. > :06:49.run. She steps ahead of the great Haile Gebrselassie, ahead of me

:06:49. > :06:55.read you do, and a baby Bikila, to take three Olympic medals -- gold

:06:55. > :06:59.medals, and joined Kenenisa Bekele as the only other if European to

:06:59. > :07:09.win three Olympic gold medals, and she might even add another one in a

:07:09. > :07:10.

:07:10. > :07:19.few days' time! This is the great A great champion to grace the first

:07:19. > :07:29.track title to be decided at London 2012. I'm sure it is a great source

:07:29. > :07:34.of joy to Sebastian Coe. How proud are you of this? Incredibly proud.

:07:34. > :07:38.All avenues are rocking, but this one for me is clearly personal. I

:07:38. > :07:43.could almost hear the crowd this morning from the sailing. People

:07:43. > :07:48.were just a stunned to walk into the first morning of track and

:07:48. > :07:53.field and not see as seat in the house. Athletics is obviously your

:07:53. > :08:00.first love it, did you imagine the first night a of athletic in the

:08:00. > :08:07.Olympic stadium in London? Yes, we get track and field in this country,

:08:07. > :08:11.we have an unbelievable tradition, we get grade, grade crowds. I think

:08:11. > :08:16.there are a number of things that really stand out for me, one is the

:08:16. > :08:21.extraordinary respect and affection that a British athletics crowd has

:08:21. > :08:28.for Great performers from overseas. But the noise here has just been

:08:28. > :08:35.unbelievable. I'm sure we will talk once more before the end of play,

:08:35. > :08:40.Michael and Denise, a quick word on what we might see tomorrow? What

:08:40. > :08:44.position... Are you happy with Jessica Ennis's lead? I am, but she

:08:44. > :08:49.still needs to do a lot of work, the long jump as a crucial event.

:08:49. > :08:54.It could be a turning point. But perfect start for her, what we

:08:54. > :08:59.expected. As a veteran of many Olympic Games and Michael, what has

:08:59. > :09:04.been your overall impression? has been phenomenal. This crowd has

:09:04. > :09:11.been great. We see that the track is fast, regardless of what Carl

:09:11. > :09:16.Lewis says, I'm convinced this is a fast track. The women were
