:01:19. > :01:28.COMMENTATOR: Victoria Pendleton Great Britain deliver, Katherine

:01:28. > :01:32.Day seven was another golden one to enjoy. But could today deliver a

:01:32. > :01:36.first track and field medal for Team GB? High hopes for Mo Farah

:01:36. > :01:46.and Jessica Ennis. But, either way, sit back and enjoy a Super Saturday

:01:46. > :01:46.

:01:46. > :02:48.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 61 seconds

:02:48. > :02:52.So much to look forward to today. Here's how it all pans out across

:02:52. > :02:55.the day. We'll be live with the triathlon in

:02:55. > :03:02.Hyde Park at 9am this morning. Great hopes there for Britain's

:03:02. > :03:07.begin here on BBC One, from 11.30am. A chance of British medals again,

:03:07. > :03:10.as the men's four look to make it four in a row for the flagship boat.

:03:11. > :03:14.This morning, it's athletics on BBC Three, at 10am. Usain Bolt will be

:03:14. > :03:17.on the track just after 12.30. Jess Ennis leads in the heptathlon,

:03:17. > :03:23.she'll have the long jump and javelin to negotiate this morning.

:03:23. > :03:27.Cycling has already delivered two British golds. Now, Ed Clancy will

:03:27. > :03:29.hope to add omnium gold to the men's team pursuit title he won on

:03:29. > :03:32.Friday. And then, later tonight, there's

:03:32. > :03:39.the all important 800 metres for Jess Ennis, just after 8.30pm. And

:03:39. > :03:42.Mo Farah goes in the men's 10,000 First for us, it's the women's

:03:42. > :03:45.triathlon, where Helen Jenkins enters the race as the reigning

:03:45. > :03:48.world champion. With Britain's Brownlee brothers also top

:03:48. > :03:52.contenders in the men's event on Tuesday, it's well worth brushing

:03:52. > :04:02.up on the ins and outs of what could be a successful sport for

:04:02. > :04:03.

:04:03. > :04:10.Triathlon. A triathlon in a race divided into three different

:04:10. > :04:17.disciplines. This third element is a 1,500m open

:04:17. > :04:22.water swim. Contact is accepted unless it is considered to be

:04:22. > :04:27.unfair for a deliberate attempt to impede. Competitors will look to

:04:27. > :04:32.use slipstream to conserve energy. It can significantly improve

:04:32. > :04:39.performance in this discipline and in the other disciplines.

:04:39. > :04:46.A cycling, the transition period is he, in the hope of gaining an

:04:46. > :04:52.advantage before a 40 kilometre bike ride. Specialist bicycles are

:04:52. > :04:58.used, strong and extremely light, particularly important as any fault

:04:58. > :05:03.in the equipment can finish the challenge. Athletes can cycle as a

:05:03. > :05:09.large group and conserve energy with riders reaching speeds of over

:05:09. > :05:14.30 miles per hour. Some riders may form a breakaway to get a head

:05:14. > :05:19.start in the next phase. For the race is won and lost been

:05:19. > :05:24.his final discipline, a 10 kilometre run. The first three to

:05:24. > :05:28.cross the line will claim the medals.

:05:28. > :05:35.Do if you would like to get involved in a live exports, more

:05:35. > :05:38.information is on our website. That's how it all works. And here,

:05:39. > :05:40.to help guide us through the race in the studio, is British

:05:41. > :05:44.triathlete and four-time World Ironman champion, Chrissie

:05:44. > :05:52.Wellington. It is an endurance event, what does

:05:52. > :05:57.it take to win a gold medal? Triathlon is a demanding event, it

:05:57. > :06:03.takes a considerable amount of time spent training and preparing.

:06:03. > :06:11.Fortunately, Britain has really high medal hopes in both the

:06:11. > :06:18.women's and men's. We are focusing on Helen Jenkins but it is a strong

:06:18. > :06:26.team. Definitely. Helen has shown great ability to cope under high

:06:26. > :06:35.pressure situations. She is double world champion and has shown great

:06:35. > :06:45.form. A strong medal contender. does the team work. Vicky Holland

:06:45. > :06:49.

:06:49. > :06:56.and Lucy Hall. Vicky is a strong athlete in her own right. Lucy Hall

:06:56. > :07:04.is extremely fast, she will try to aim to get to the front of the

:07:04. > :07:14.swimming pack, to help Helen go with her. Her role is that to have

:07:14. > :07:19.

:07:19. > :07:28.a strong swimmer -- swim. Here they are, getting ready, at the side of

:07:28. > :07:33.the Serpentine. They are in wet suits. The temperature in the

:07:33. > :07:40.Serpentine has been fluctuating. In a triathlon, Olympic distance,

:07:40. > :07:48.anything below 20 degrees mean they should wear wet suits. They give

:07:48. > :07:54.added buoyancy. We will see a faster swim, but slower transition

:07:54. > :08:04.because they need to take the wet suit off. It will also help the

:08:04. > :08:06.

:08:06. > :08:10.weaker for Ms -- swimmers. Only another five minutes before

:08:10. > :08:20.the race gets underway. So let's hear from Helen Jenkins herself.

:08:20. > :08:36.

:08:36. > :08:41.How does the best triathlete in the world prepare herself for the

:08:41. > :08:46.biggest race of her life? You want to treat it like any other race.

:08:46. > :08:51.But there is a lot more going on around it, it is a lot more

:08:51. > :08:57.important. But, it comes down to the same amount of distance, so

:08:57. > :09:02.that is what I have to focus on. It is the same every race. She has

:09:02. > :09:08.been here before, as Helen Tucker, she was reigning world champion

:09:08. > :09:15.going into the Beijing Olympics but finished outside the top 20.

:09:15. > :09:21.COMMENTATOR: Helen Tucker, disappointed, 21st position. Going

:09:21. > :09:25.into Beijing, I was so happy to be there, and hadn't raced in the

:09:25. > :09:30.previous year because of injury. I didn't have my best performance.

:09:30. > :09:40.This time, it is different. I really want to win a medal, to

:09:40. > :09:42.

:09:42. > :09:51.achieve what I think I can do. COMMENTATOR: Helen Jenkins will go

:09:51. > :09:58.into the Olympics on a monster high. This time, they have built a team

:09:58. > :10:05.around Helen, who can protect her before the run. Other teams have

:10:05. > :10:09.used it in the past. I am confident we have prepared individually and

:10:09. > :10:17.can execute a great race. Having that time together has helped and

:10:17. > :10:22.motivated us. If it happens to be made crossing the line, they will

:10:22. > :10:27.have helped me. The three of us are trying to win a medal for the

:10:27. > :10:33.British triathlon. The 4th member of the team will be the huge crowd

:10:33. > :10:43.cheering them on every inch of the way.

:10:43. > :10:44.

:10:44. > :10:48.COMMENTATOR: Jenkins, cruising home, It is important to use the support

:10:48. > :10:58.and carry us forward. We have to appreciate it. Let's make the most

:10:58. > :10:59.

:10:59. > :11:03.of it. A beautiful setting in Hyde Park.

:11:03. > :11:12.Helen Jenkins goes into this Olympic triathlon in a strong

:11:12. > :11:19.position. She has had a string of great races, she won the test event

:11:19. > :11:24.here in London last year, in front of an amazing home crowd. She had a

:11:24. > :11:29.great race, she showed her incredible consistency across the

:11:29. > :11:37.three disciplines. A very fast run. She has had a couple of strong

:11:37. > :11:42.races this year including a win in San Diego in a packed field. She is

:11:42. > :11:46.the one the others will be looking out for. There are 54 other

:11:46. > :11:54.competitors. She is not the only athlete we want to watch. They will

:11:54. > :11:58.all have different strengths at different stages of the triathlon.

:11:58. > :12:07.The best triathlete, the most successful, are consistent across

:12:07. > :12:14.all three disciplines. Definitely, there are other athletes who

:12:14. > :12:22.excelled in swimming. You might not see them feature so strongly in the

:12:22. > :12:29.bike. Because they can sit in packs, you might see some conserving their

:12:29. > :12:35.energy, especially the faster runners. You might see stronger

:12:35. > :12:44.cyclists making a break a way which will be exciting. Given it is a

:12:44. > :12:54.technical course, seven laps. The breakaways could happen, you could

:12:54. > :12:59.

:12:59. > :13:03.see packs of cyclists emerge. Thanks, Chrissie. A rainy start to

:13:03. > :13:13.the day but hopefully it will be bright for the triathletes. They

:13:13. > :13:13.

:13:13. > :13:23.begin with a 1,500m swim, then a 40 kilometre or cycle. Coming back

:13:23. > :13:31.

:13:32. > :13:40.into the park for that 10 come at a run. -- 10km run.

:13:40. > :13:46.Welcome to Hyde Park. It is packed here. He triathletes have just

:13:46. > :13:53.walked past, lining up, almost ready to start. Today, we are

:13:53. > :13:56.looking at Helen Jenkins, she has a great chance. A brilliant chance.

:13:56. > :14:06.There are half a dozen other competitors who have a real chance

:14:06. > :14:09.

:14:09. > :14:19.of beating her. There is no defending champion. The Australian

:14:19. > :14:25.

:14:25. > :14:33.we should manage our expectations. We have good team tactics. The

:14:33. > :14:40.plant is to push it as hard as possible on the swim, to get rid of

:14:40. > :14:50.some of the really good runners. We have to make sure that the pack

:14:50. > :14:50.

:14:50. > :14:57.A real test of endurance. Speaking to all three earlier this week,

:14:57. > :15:05.they were saying, if anybody wants to get past Helen, they will have

:15:05. > :15:11.to get past the other two. Lucy will swim as fast as she can. She

:15:11. > :15:21.swims so fast. I fully expect to see her driving on and said bring

:15:21. > :15:30.

:15:30. > :15:36.on. We will try to pick out some of the main players as they tackle

:15:36. > :15:41.this 1.5 kilometre course. Chilly water in the Serpentine after a

:15:41. > :15:46.miserable summer in England. It hasn't had a chance to warm up. We

:15:46. > :15:51.have three distinct groups starting to form. They will not leave the

:15:51. > :15:55.lake. It is a single lap swim. They will head in this direction before

:15:55. > :16:00.turning back and then going back behind a pontoon where they started

:16:01. > :16:08.before coming back out of the water on a ramp that takes them straight

:16:08. > :16:15.into transition. From the USA, one of the Americans leading the way.

:16:15. > :16:22.There are three Americans in the competition. They are wearing 52,

:16:22. > :16:28.Bennett, 53, Croft, 54, Jorgensen. I think Sarah Groff will be up

:16:28. > :16:33.there. And Jorgensen coming in with a tremendous run. The swim it will

:16:33. > :16:38.be critical for her. Looking at these early stages, there is really

:16:38. > :16:44.quite a big spread. I'm very, very surprised that the pack not being

:16:44. > :16:48.closer together. That is Nicola Spirig, she is a real threat. She

:16:48. > :16:54.has won two of the World Championship Series races over the

:16:54. > :17:02.summer. She won in Austria and again in Madrid. She is one of the

:17:02. > :17:08.big threats to Helen Jenkins's quest to win Olympic gold. The

:17:08. > :17:12.swimming arrowhead begins to form. You can see it from the helicopter

:17:12. > :17:17.shot. Nicola Spirig appears to be at the tip of that arrowhead at the

:17:17. > :17:23.moment. I think we have got Lucy Hall from Great Britain coming

:17:23. > :17:29.through. Lucy Hall has been put in as a domestic. Her running is not

:17:29. > :17:32.the strongest, the British team appreciate that, but she is there

:17:32. > :17:38.to help Helen Jenkins particularly and Vicky Holland through on the

:17:39. > :17:43.swim and a bike. To help and protect. Lucy Hall is the youngest

:17:43. > :17:51.competitor in the race. One of the oldest, Laura Bennett, is near the

:17:51. > :17:59.front of this swim. She is from the USA. We do seem to have a big

:17:59. > :18:04.spread already and it does surprise me. With wetsuits, they call it the

:18:04. > :18:07.equaliser because of the buoyancy. That makes it a little bit easier

:18:07. > :18:12.for the swimmers who are not quite so good to stay up with a top-class

:18:12. > :18:17.winners. We have a breakaway of three athletes looking to forge

:18:17. > :18:21.their way. It is very early and I just wonder if that sort of league

:18:21. > :18:25.is going to be held or if the athletes chasing through are

:18:25. > :18:31.prepared to let them go. Lucy Hall is leading them through, the

:18:31. > :18:38.youngest competitor in the race, from Great Britain. 20 years, five

:18:38. > :18:48.months and 15 days. 19 is there as well, lane eight Janssen from

:18:48. > :18:56.

:18:56. > :19:02.Denmark. I think third places one off the back of an international

:19:02. > :19:06.swimming career. No surprise to see her up there. Lucy Hall has been

:19:06. > :19:11.told, let's take the swimmer out really fast and see if we can

:19:11. > :19:16.stretch the pack. If we can do that, we will have a strong -- the strong

:19:16. > :19:21.bikers and runners, hopefully the bridge a strategy may be to get

:19:22. > :19:29.them disconnected early on. -- British strategy. Fay have rounded

:19:30. > :19:35.the yellow inflatables on the far side of the lake. Do you can see

:19:35. > :19:45.how many have come into the park to enjoy this competition. You can see

:19:45. > :19:45.

:19:45. > :19:53.the Diana memorial fountain as well. 28 acres in total, the Serpentine.

:19:54. > :19:59.Created in 1730. At some points it is 12 metres deep. We have a

:19:59. > :20:05.breakaway group of four athletes. We know Lucy Hall is there. Lisa

:20:05. > :20:15.Jensen as well. We are trying to get an identification for you. We

:20:15. > :20:20.wonder if Lucy has been told... Number 49 is Pamela Oliveira. That

:20:20. > :20:24.surprises me a little bit. We need an identification on the fourth

:20:24. > :20:28.swimmer. The coaches talk about the critical distance going into

:20:28. > :20:32.transition on to the bike of being around seven seconds. If you get a

:20:32. > :20:36.small pack who can get away, if they work together, that seems to

:20:36. > :20:41.be the critical time. With such a small group moving away and a huge

:20:41. > :20:51.pack behind, that remains to be seen. Lucy Hall of Great Britain

:20:51. > :20:56.leads the Olympic triathlon. There's a huge pack. This is where

:20:56. > :21:02.injuries can happen. Accidents can happen. They can get hit by elbows

:21:03. > :21:05.going around the tight turns. Everybody needs to watch out. The

:21:05. > :21:15.swimmers in fourth and 5th are well positioned, they have clean water

:21:15. > :21:17.

:21:17. > :21:21.and nobody around to trouble them. I think we are looking... If the

:21:21. > :21:25.5th swimmer can make contact to get on the feet of the swimmer in front,

:21:25. > :21:30.that will be drafting and that gives a significant benefit,

:21:30. > :21:35.perhaps 15 or 20% less effort just to maintain the same speed with

:21:35. > :21:39.somebody just creating that break in front. They are coming past and

:21:39. > :21:44.in front of the Lansbury lido, which is a public swimming area. It

:21:44. > :21:49.is close today, but people swim there every day every year. There

:21:49. > :21:57.is a regular Christmas Day swim where some of the hardy members

:21:57. > :22:04.dive in on December 25th every year. Claudia Rivas from Mexico is up

:22:04. > :22:08.with the leaders and in good shape. They are going past the pontoon

:22:08. > :22:12.where they dived to start the competition. They will head off in

:22:12. > :22:21.the opposite direction before heading back towards the pontoon

:22:21. > :22:26.for the exit. A fantastic sight. really is quite a dynamic swim.

:22:26. > :22:32.There's obviously going to be no prisoners at all. A huge effort at

:22:32. > :22:38.the front. We haven't yet got a tag on Helen Jenkins or Vicky Holland

:22:38. > :22:43.from Great Britain, but equally, with his speed, even with the wet

:22:43. > :22:47.suits, some delight Nicola Spirig, who has not had the greatest swims,

:22:47. > :22:51.will be having a few thoughts about trying to close the gap. That will

:22:51. > :22:55.make the start of the cycling section very, very interesting. We

:22:55. > :23:01.will see a lot of positive effort as the chasers try to re-establish

:23:01. > :23:10.contact. He coming pass the pontoon where it all began eight minutes to

:23:10. > :23:16.go. -- ago. Starting to tackle the second half of this 1.5, to swim.

:23:16. > :23:22.They will leave the park in today's Olympic triathlon. The Olympic test

:23:22. > :23:28.it then was won by Helen Jenkins and Alistair Brownlee. They will go

:23:28. > :23:33.down constitution Hill towards Buckingham Palace to complete seven

:23:34. > :23:38.laps of 6.1 kilometres each. A slightly longer ride than normal.

:23:38. > :23:43.43 kilometres in total. We now have seven swimmers who have gone away

:23:43. > :23:46.from the main pack. I keep emphasising this, but his is

:23:46. > :23:50.significant. One of the other things we need to take into account

:23:50. > :23:55.is one of these huge difference between triathlon swimming and

:23:55. > :24:00.open-water swimming and a pool swimming, the need to look up.

:24:01. > :24:08.Coming past the red boil a few seconds ago, one of the sinners, I

:24:08. > :24:13.think Sarah Groff, she's one right into the water boy. -- she swum.

:24:13. > :24:18.The cat the crowds in Hyde Park. 10 deep in places. Hoon everybody

:24:18. > :24:23.trying to get a viewpoint. No tickets required to take position

:24:23. > :24:27.in the park to watch this event. The Serpentine will also be used

:24:27. > :24:32.for the open-water swimming. That is on Thursday and Friday this week.

:24:32. > :24:37.The women's on Thursday and the men's on Friday. A good chance for

:24:37. > :24:40.Great Britain with Kerri-Anne Payne. I think this has almost gone back a

:24:40. > :24:46.few years where we have people absolutely committed to getting

:24:46. > :24:52.away early. So often now, since triathlon at became draft legal, 18

:24:52. > :24:56.years ago, we have seen groups establish themselves early on and

:24:56. > :25:03.almost a reluctance to lead. This is the Olympics and things are

:25:03. > :25:09.different. People are prepared to put themselves on the line. He

:25:09. > :25:14.three in front -- 5 in front and a chase pack coming back. They have

:25:14. > :25:18.created a significant gap already between themselves, the seven

:25:18. > :25:24.leaders, and the chasing pack. It looks like we are beginning to get

:25:24. > :25:34.the seven leaders coming together rather than two Yeading groups.

:25:34. > :25:51.

:25:51. > :25:55.inflatable. Coming through his No. 15, Noriko Adachi of Japan. She has

:25:55. > :26:05.done very well on the Asian series of eight races, but hasn't

:26:05. > :26:06.

:26:06. > :26:13.established herself at world level. Every race is so different. No. 19

:26:13. > :26:17.is Lisa Jensen, still working hard. Good news for Great Britain, Lucy

:26:17. > :26:27.Hall, No. 8, the crowd is getting behind her. She is in for her

:26:27. > :26:37.

:26:37. > :26:42.swimming and cycling strings. -- be holding second place. Number 49.

:26:42. > :26:46.Pamela Oliveira. The early leaders still there. Still waiting for a

:26:46. > :26:49.sign of Helen Jenkins and Vicky Holland. Several of the other big

:26:49. > :26:56.names we would expect to be fighting haven't really made a

:26:56. > :27:06.position yet. Lucy Hall from Great Britain leads the way, the youngest

:27:06. > :27:10.

:27:10. > :27:14.competitor in the field. She is swim that opens the women's

:27:14. > :27:19.triathlon in Hyde Park. Watching in the studio with Nige is Chrissie

:27:19. > :27:25.Wellington. Explain what we are seeing in the opening stage. It is

:27:25. > :27:32.quite interesting. Lucy was brought into the team as what we call a

:27:32. > :27:38.domestic. Her role was to work for Helen Jenkins. We expected her to

:27:38. > :27:43.lead the swim, but we would have hoped that Helen would have gone

:27:43. > :27:48.with her so that she would have been at in the first pack and then

:27:48. > :27:53.have an advantage on the bike. I can't see that Helen has made it

:27:53. > :27:58.into the first pack. Off although Lucy Hall is right up there, she is

:27:58. > :28:04.not looking to win this triathlon? I don't expect that she has any

:28:04. > :28:09.ambitions of trying to win the race. She was brought into the team as

:28:09. > :28:14.someone to assist Helen and getting her into a good position in the

:28:14. > :28:19.swim and then onto the bike. To set the pace? Yes, and set Helen up for

:28:19. > :28:24.a strong bike and a strong run. is setting the pace, but not

:28:24. > :28:28.knowing whether Helen is anywhere near her. Absolutely. You are

:28:28. > :28:32.relatively anonymous in a wet suit. Because she is leading, she will

:28:32. > :28:36.not know who is behind her. She will be hoping she has been able to

:28:36. > :28:46.take Helen wither, but it doesn't look like she is in that lead pack.

:28:46. > :28:49.Let's go back to the commentators. The closing stages of the swim. 1.5

:28:49. > :28:57.kilometres in the Serpentine. They are heading back towards that

:28:57. > :29:00.pontoon. Lucy Hall is leading the way. There are plenty of others

:29:00. > :29:08.battling for position. Jessica Harrison has just gone around the

:29:08. > :29:12.yellow inflatable. No. 8, Lucy Hall, in front. What we tend to see if we

:29:12. > :29:19.can have a group of three off-fore first out of the water, but as the

:29:19. > :29:28.bike develops, we tend to see a big pack forming. We do, but I just

:29:28. > :29:33.think this is a very, very different race. To have a loose

:29:33. > :29:38.group, a leading group, getting away by a hugely significant margin

:29:38. > :29:44.puts a totally doomed -- a new dimension on the race. We spoke

:29:45. > :29:48.about Lucy Hall being in the British team as a domestic. It is a

:29:48. > :29:52.modern sport and Malcolm Brown, the Olympic performers director, was

:29:52. > :29:57.talking about this earlier this week. We are looking to get medals

:29:57. > :30:02.for Great Britain. This is going to put Lucy Hall in an invidious

:30:02. > :30:07.position. If Helen Jenkins were to beat them back in the lead group,

:30:07. > :30:11.that is fantastic. Lucy will have to make a huge decision if Helen is

:30:11. > :30:18.in the second group. What does she do? Does she try to slow down the

:30:18. > :30:23.leading pack or is she going to be forced along if the other athletes

:30:23. > :30:29.are working hard. She has to make a huge decision about whether to drop

:30:29. > :30:33.back and get with Helen or to slow down the pack, or possibly stay

:30:33. > :30:38.with the leading group and put herself into medal contention.

:30:38. > :30:48.would be very surprised if Helen Jenkins isn't in that leading dozen.

:30:48. > :30:54.

:30:54. > :31:00.seen her yet. A group of seven, chasing Lucy Hall. We haven't had

:31:00. > :31:07.confirmation that Helen is without front group but we will get a full

:31:07. > :31:16.check on the positions. You can see the exit ramp taking them onto the

:31:16. > :31:25.transition area. We will get a full check of positions, as they exit

:31:25. > :31:33.the water. You will be able to spot the contenders. No number 13 in the

:31:33. > :31:43.triathlon, a total of 55, numbers 1-56 and the competition today.

:31:43. > :31:44.

:31:45. > :31:54.We have had confirmation, it leads to possibly three we are not sure

:31:55. > :32:04.

:32:04. > :32:14.disciplines. The transition is critical. A race has been on -- 1

:32:14. > :32:37.

:32:37. > :32:41.makes the first transition or difficult. -- more difficult.

:32:41. > :32:51.Difficult it adds an extra element today, the fact that the water end

:32:51. > :33:08.

:33:08. > :33:17.the serpent 10 -- in the Serpentine the temperature has gone down to 19.

:33:17. > :33:25.These women is almost over, 18 minutes. Lucy Hall, of Great

:33:25. > :33:30.Britain, has led from the start. She will be first to exit the water.

:33:30. > :33:40.Coming up to the ramp now. She starts to undo her wet suit,

:33:40. > :33:41.

:33:42. > :33:51.getting ready, first out of water. Followed closely by Line Jensen.

:33:52. > :34:02.

:34:02. > :34:10.competition. Jessica Harrison, now racing for France. Lucy Hall has

:34:10. > :34:20.already arrived at her bike, her helmet is on, the issues are

:34:20. > :34:23.

:34:23. > :34:31.already kit into the pedals. until they get to that line. Helen

:34:31. > :34:41.Jenkins is at the front of the chasing pack. No, it is not Jenkins,

:34:41. > :34:43.

:34:43. > :34:53.it is Lisa Norden from Sweden. Jenkins is in 10th position, in the

:34:53. > :35:14.

:35:14. > :35:24.Helen Jenkins. Nicola Spirig. And Gwen Jorgensen, one of the

:35:24. > :35:24.

:35:24. > :35:34.strongest runners. That gap between the lead pack, it puts a different

:35:34. > :35:50.

:35:50. > :35:59.injuries, still finding her way Nice to see that Vicky Holland is

:35:59. > :36:07.there as well. Both working hard, at the top end of this pack. They

:36:07. > :36:12.have to close the gap. The first few led out of water by Lucy Hall.

:36:12. > :36:17.We will join the leaders now. They are on their way through the park,

:36:17. > :36:24.they will exit at Hyde Park Corner for the first time, head down

:36:24. > :36:31.Constitution Hill, by the war memorials. Around the Victoria

:36:31. > :36:37.Memorial, then head back to the park. A total of 43 kilometres.

:36:37. > :36:45.Helen Jenkins, leading the chase pack. There is someone committed to

:36:45. > :36:52.getting back on to the front end. Some people still coming out of

:36:52. > :36:59.transition. Helen Jenkins, with Vicky Holland

:36:59. > :37:05.from Great Britain, alongside her, at the top end of the big chase

:37:05. > :37:11.pack. A group of four at the front. I think we are going to see some

:37:11. > :37:20.hard work at the front end, they want to stay away. One of the

:37:20. > :37:30.Italians making the running at the front of the field. Anna Maria

:37:30. > :37:32.

:37:32. > :37:42.Maaetti from Italy. Lucy Hall, in that lead pack. Content to stay at

:37:42. > :37:43.

:37:43. > :37:49.the back. She hasn't gone to the front yet. There we are. She is

:37:49. > :37:57.checking to see where Helen is. She has made a commitment clear, she is

:37:57. > :38:02.there to help the other two. She has stated, I am not chasing at the

:38:02. > :38:12.front. One of the big dangers is Bent, she may be the oldest

:38:12. > :38:13.

:38:14. > :38:18.competitor but she has had medals at world level 3 or four times.

:38:18. > :38:28.Going out through the memorial gates. Spending some time on Park

:38:28. > :38:30.

:38:30. > :38:35.lane. Dozens of expensive cars lined up in front of the hotels.

:38:35. > :38:45.Some of our wealthy guests from the Middle East liked to spend summer

:38:45. > :38:54.

:38:54. > :39:03.first time, the leading group. Under the Wellington Arch, planned

:39:03. > :39:07.in 1825, to commemorate Britain's victories in the Napoleonic wars.

:39:07. > :39:17.Constitution Hill. Buckingham Palace gardens on the right.

:39:17. > :39:26.

:39:26. > :39:32.Jessica Harrison, France, is on largest private gardens are on the

:39:32. > :39:42.right. They will come down towards the memorial, that is the distance

:39:42. > :39:42.

:39:42. > :39:47.between the leaders and the chasing pack.

:39:47. > :39:57.22 in the chasing group. Lucy Hall not doing any work at the front,

:39:57. > :39:57.

:39:57. > :40:07.checking behind. Is that Flora Duffy? It looks like it. Out in

:40:07. > :40:15.

:40:15. > :40:20.front, Lucy Hall of Great Britain We saw Lucy Hall come up first,

:40:20. > :40:27.from transition. She was very hesitant, she kept looking at the

:40:27. > :40:32.big screen to find Helen, she was very hesitant. That is her job, she

:40:32. > :40:40.is there as a domestique, to push the swim as hard as she could and

:40:41. > :40:50.bring Helen with her. Helen hadn't made the lead group. She has done

:40:51. > :40:54.

:40:54. > :41:02.half her job, to make the swim as way through. We have had a

:41:02. > :41:08.Brazilian faller. This lead group will get caught. The riders will

:41:08. > :41:14.have to ride hard. Lucy will not work, she wants the other athletes

:41:14. > :41:20.to push on as hard as they can. keeps checking to find where Helen

:41:20. > :41:27.is, she wants Helen to catch her. There are some very fast runners in

:41:27. > :41:34.the field. Gwen Jorgensen from the USA it is a fast runner. If it is

:41:34. > :41:44.an easy race were they run, a ride around together, Gwen Jorgensen has

:41:44. > :41:45.

:41:45. > :41:55.a good chance of winning. She needs to come off the bike in pieces.

:41:55. > :42:07.

:42:07. > :42:15.The lap one of the seven on the On the wake up this slight incline,

:42:15. > :42:25.returning to the park, back up constitutional Hill. --

:42:25. > :42:41.

:42:41. > :42:47.this. It looks as if that early lead group is being caught. However,

:42:47. > :42:52.we haven't got a huge group chasing up together. The speed of the first

:42:52. > :42:58.part of the chasing group is very fast indeed. They are dropping

:42:58. > :43:05.people off the back. We have seen a split in this field. This is the

:43:05. > :43:11.Olympic Games. They are forcing some of the athletes to drop. Line

:43:11. > :43:16.Jensen has been working very hard. We seem to have that working group

:43:17. > :43:26.at the front. We haven't yet seen Lucy Hall going at the front, we

:43:26. > :43:30.know why. Laura Bennett for the United States. We need to see a

:43:30. > :43:40.concerted Chase by the big group behind to close up. These early

:43:40. > :43:45.leaders will not give in easily. can confirm that Oliveira has

:43:45. > :43:54.fallen, the only Brazilian in the field. She was clearly shaken as

:43:54. > :44:04.she attempted to get back on to her bike. Harrison macro of France on

:44:04. > :44:29.

:44:29. > :44:38.the righthand side. No sign behind Andrea Hewitt from New Zealand. Two

:44:38. > :44:48.of the pre-race favourites working hard. We have to remember, it is

:44:48. > :44:48.

:44:48. > :44:54.still early days. We are almost putting pressure on the athletes.

:44:54. > :45:04.At field has spread right the way across. They have all come through

:45:04. > :45:28.

:45:28. > :45:33.between the leaders and the chasing for the Republic of Ireland.

:45:33. > :45:42.Ireland's number one. We mentioned Flora Duffy earlier. She is in that

:45:42. > :45:46.group as well. She is looking down at her bike. Such discipline from

:45:46. > :45:52.Lucy Hall. The pressure from the other four to get her to do work at

:45:52. > :45:57.the front must be huge and she is sticking to her guns. It is the

:45:57. > :46:02.programme that has been set out for her. She is there to help Helen

:46:02. > :46:09.Jenkins. Lucy is sitting and hoping that Helen will be coming through.

:46:09. > :46:14.I am surprised that Vicky Holland was a minute through. We have got a

:46:14. > :46:20.mechanical failure for Duffy of Bermuda. She is in trouble and her

:46:20. > :46:27.chance of a medal has gone. That is a great shame. I was talking to her

:46:27. > :46:31.team manager earlier this week. She had a bad race in Beijing and she

:46:31. > :46:39.has worked so hard to get back. To be forced out with mechanical

:46:39. > :46:44.problems will be absolutely huge for her. The chasing group. About

:46:44. > :46:48.12 or 15 of them. Helen Jenkins is at the front, shouting instructions

:46:48. > :46:53.to the others, giving them encouragement. She knows there's a

:46:53. > :46:57.time difference to close. Now they have to start working as a team to

:46:57. > :47:01.try to close it. Jackson of Australia lingering at the back of

:47:01. > :47:07.the group. At the back of the chasing group is Lucy Ball from

:47:07. > :47:15.Great Britain. She was first out of the water. They are approaching

:47:15. > :47:21.Hyde Park Corner. Lucy Hall is the youngest athlete in the race.

:47:21. > :47:25.Jackson is just a few days older than Lucy. You can't rule her out,

:47:25. > :47:34.Jackson is such a strong runner. She has done amazingly well in the

:47:34. > :47:44.junior ranks. Now they will head out once again through the Queen

:47:44. > :47:45.

:47:45. > :47:50.Mother memorial gates. They turn right onto Hyde Park. A little bit

:47:50. > :47:58.of time spent on the main roads of central London, down towards the

:47:58. > :48:04.palace and Constitution Hill. Heading that way it for the second

:48:04. > :48:09.time to set up the halfway stage of this second lap of seven on the

:48:10. > :48:14.bike. Three things came through. Laura Bennett is gesticulating to

:48:14. > :48:19.the others, let's do some work. On the chasing pack, Helen Jenkins

:48:19. > :48:26.doing exactly the same. The third thing that caught my eye, Emma

:48:26. > :48:31.Jackson... Very, very happy to sit at the back of that pack. If she

:48:31. > :48:35.can get through, if they can take her through, she feels she has a

:48:35. > :48:40.big chance going into the final discipline. You can see the

:48:40. > :48:44.magnificent statue on top of the Wellington Arch, Place there in

:48:44. > :48:49.1912, designed by Adrian Jones based on a similar original that

:48:49. > :48:59.caught the eye it of Edward the Seventh at the Royal Academy

:48:59. > :49:06.

:49:06. > :49:12.exhibition. It is a magnificent Olympic triathlon. Without Helen

:49:12. > :49:22.Jenkins, that is unexpected. They can't pass the Victoria Memorial,

:49:22. > :49:26.

:49:26. > :49:33.in front of Buckingham Palace. -- London. Within the park itself, it

:49:33. > :49:37.was solid. Dozens of dozens of people who wanted to be there. I

:49:37. > :49:43.think triathlon has caught the imagination of the British public,

:49:43. > :49:47.with Helen Jenkins and Alastair and Jonathan Brownlee, the two

:49:47. > :49:50.Yorkshire-based boys who have absolutely taking the World

:49:50. > :49:55.Triathlon Series by storm. Both world champions in their own right

:49:55. > :50:00.and both hot favourites in the men's field. But still that Packer

:50:00. > :50:06.five staying away. The discipline shown by Rebecca -- Lucy Hall,

:50:06. > :50:15.there must be huge pressure on her. Another crash! We talked about the

:50:15. > :50:25.dampness. The Polish Rider has gone down. Was that the same place?

:50:25. > :50:31.Chiswick of Poland has gone down. Goodness me. Jackson had to bypass

:50:31. > :50:35.the faller. That is no coincidence. You don't have two athletes of this

:50:35. > :50:43.calibre crashing in the same place. There has to be Greece on the

:50:43. > :50:46.ground. If that gets fed back to the pack, we will have to do

:50:46. > :50:53.something. I'm not sure if the marshals are able to put something

:50:53. > :51:00.down. That is significant and that is very, very unfortunate for the

:51:00. > :51:05.athletes concerned. The leading group, which contains Vicky Hall, I

:51:05. > :51:11.now just the handful of seconds clear of the chasers. Lisa Norden

:51:11. > :51:17.is leading through, Nicola Spirig as well. Is that a sigh of relief

:51:17. > :51:23.on Helen's face? Sarah Groff and Emma Jackson, we've seen Sarah

:51:23. > :51:28.Groff duelling with Vemic -- Helen Jenkins many times before. I still

:51:28. > :51:33.feel that Emma Jackson will be a threat. She's a tremendous runner,

:51:33. > :51:39.cross country, five kilometres, 10 kilometres. If she has saved her

:51:39. > :51:44.legs on this middle disciplined, she could be a player. Up into Park

:51:44. > :51:51.lane again, passing the Dorchester Hotel at the end of Park lane. But

:51:51. > :51:55.they will go back into the park via the Queen Mother memorial gates. It

:51:55. > :52:02.will not be long before the group of five at the front becomes a much

:52:02. > :52:08.larger entity with the chasers closing in. Lucy Hall, Jensen,

:52:08. > :52:18.Adachi, Oliveira and Rivas. We have another one down. It looks like the

:52:18. > :52:20.

:52:20. > :52:27.same point. No. 6 is Sophia Kovacs from hungry. -- Hungary. More of a

:52:27. > :52:37.problem for Kathy Tremblay of Canada. Payback will skit from

:52:37. > :52:48.

:52:48. > :52:54.Kovacs. -- A back wheel skid. More she had some issues with her chain.

:52:54. > :53:04.Whether she will be able to get back on the bike, I don't know.

:53:04. > :53:14.

:53:14. > :53:18.group is now coming together. The early leaders had what I thought

:53:18. > :53:25.was a significant gap of 30 seconds. That is Gillian Sanders from South

:53:25. > :53:29.Africa. As a youth she was tremendous. She left the sport and

:53:29. > :53:33.qualified as a lawyer and has been working in London. The Olympics

:53:33. > :53:41.caught her imagination and she made a comeback three years ago and has

:53:41. > :53:46.made the South African team. Nicola Spirig featuring again, so strong.

:53:46. > :53:52.Two weeks ago she did a 17.3 event. Almost double this Olympic distance

:53:52. > :53:57.event. She won there. You sometimes wonder if that is the right thing

:53:57. > :54:01.to do, just two weeks before, but it is obviously working for her.

:54:01. > :54:10.Helen Jenkins is taking a breather for the first time. Lucy Hall looks

:54:10. > :54:14.back. Now I'm going to do my job. I'm sure we will see those two

:54:14. > :54:19.getting together. They have just crossed the bridge over the

:54:19. > :54:24.Serpentine. Lucy Hall is constantly looking over her shoulder,

:54:24. > :54:31.searching out Helen Jenkins. She is employed as a domestique, debt aid

:54:31. > :54:35.Helens quest to win a first Olympic medal of any colour in triathlon.

:54:35. > :54:40.Looking back over the history of the three Olympics, the early

:54:40. > :54:45.favourite that has won was Emma Snowsill four years ago. It has

:54:45. > :54:49.always been a surprise in the men's and women's. Simon Whitfield, going

:54:49. > :54:53.into Sydney, one of the younger athletes, and got disconnected on

:54:53. > :54:58.the bike and the run, but close that gap brilliantly. I think he

:54:58. > :55:04.will be the oldest man in the men's race in a couple of days. Her Len

:55:04. > :55:14.Jenkins is wearing Number Ten. That is the number we need to look for.

:55:14. > :55:24.

:55:24. > :55:28.She also has Jenkins emblazoned Ireland, hard work for her as she

:55:28. > :55:31.comes through transition for the second time. She is in the little

:55:31. > :55:36.group of five trying to get involved with the leading players.

:55:36. > :55:43.The other non- -- the other one we need to look at his Daniela Ryf

:55:43. > :55:47.from Switzerland. Lucy Hall has got her head down. Let's see what we

:55:47. > :55:54.can do to make the first British medal in Olympic triathlon history.

:55:54. > :56:02.We have a big group formed as expected. Lucy Hall has encouraged

:56:02. > :56:09.Jenkins to pull up alongside her. You will see 43 on her shoulder,

:56:09. > :56:19.Nicola Spirig. The swifts -- Swiss athlete has won two World

:56:19. > :56:23.

:56:23. > :56:27.Championship Series events. Number 31 goes to the front, Vodickova. He

:56:27. > :56:33.Spirig will be happy to sit behind and absorb the little slipstream

:56:33. > :56:39.she has been provided with by the Czech rider. Nicola Spirig does now

:56:39. > :56:44.moved to the front of the field and the two British riders are keeping

:56:44. > :56:48.out of trouble, tucked in behind the leaders. I think we have to

:56:48. > :56:53.look at one of the similarities between Spirig and Jenkins. They

:56:53. > :56:59.are both capable of a tremendous run after a hard by exception. At

:56:59. > :57:03.the moment we are looking at the bike, an opportunity for the legs

:57:03. > :57:07.to get refreshed. I think Helen and Nicola Spirig will be more than

:57:07. > :57:13.happy if the pace picks up. I can even see them both being prepared

:57:13. > :57:18.to put the hammer down at the front. She has been prepared to do it

:57:18. > :57:27.before. I'm convinced she has the running strength to run well after

:57:27. > :57:33.the bike. Gillian Sanders is now up in the lead. The Polish Rider has

:57:33. > :57:39.done well to pick herself up. Oliveira, another one who has got a

:57:39. > :57:43.little bit of road rash as well. Holland is the third of the British

:57:43. > :57:50.triathletes involved today. Vicky Holland from Great Britain has some

:57:50. > :57:58.work to do. Another look and one or two casualties. Number 27 Going

:57:58. > :58:04.Down, Emma Moffatt of Australia. Joined by another 24. One of the

:58:04. > :58:09.Italians skidding across the tarmac. Kitties carnage on the wet roads of

:58:09. > :58:19.West London this morning. -- it is carnage. You can almost see the

:58:19. > :58:25.sense of resignation. We expected Anne Haug to be up there. Gillian

:58:25. > :58:30.Sanders as well. Helen Jenkins, yellow helmet, in 5th or 6th

:58:30. > :58:36.position at the moment. They are coming in front of the Victoria

:58:36. > :58:40.Memorial, in front of the palace, unveiled in 1911 by George V, who

:58:40. > :58:47.apparently was knighted on the spot as soon as the King saw his work.

:58:47. > :58:52.We have a problem for one of the Americans. That is going Jorgensen.

:58:52. > :58:56.I thought she was going to be a big feature on the run. She is going to

:58:56. > :59:03.have to work so hard to re- establish contact. How many crashes

:59:03. > :59:07.have we seen? It seems the most ever. They have gone down lap after

:59:07. > :59:13.lap. I am not sure if she had a crash or a mechanical problem of

:59:13. > :59:21.some kind. Either way, she lost her place and now she is working very

:59:21. > :59:26.hard to regain it. She is a very, very lean athlete. This weir might

:59:26. > :59:30.have been tough for her. A look inside the inner courtyard of

:59:30. > :59:37.Buckingham Palace with its magnificent gardens stretching

:59:37. > :59:40.behind the palace. The front of the Palace was built with Portland

:59:41. > :59:50.stone from Dorset, where the Olympic sailing events are

:59:51. > :59:57.

:59:57. > :00:02.Sanders hasn't taken the lead yet, but seems very happy in second or

:00:02. > :00:07.third place. Spirig looking over her shoulder to see if anybody is

:00:07. > :00:13.going to come through. There's a whole tactical element in triathlon.

:00:13. > :00:16.They try to get away on the swim, that didn't work. Now they are back

:00:16. > :00:24.together. Lovely to see Helen Jenkins there. They are climbing

:00:25. > :00:34.the hill going past the Wellington Arch. The British pair of Hall and

:00:35. > :00:54.

:00:54. > :01:01.gone so far? The chase pack has caught the front pack from the swim.

:01:01. > :01:06.I think we will civvy medal contenders in this front pack. This

:01:06. > :01:12.will favour of the strong cyclists. They are talking to one another, to

:01:12. > :01:17.push the pace. The strong sightless will know they will still have a

:01:17. > :01:24.fast ride and a good, strong run afterwards. Helen Jenkins has

:01:24. > :01:33.caught up. She is in a great position. Lucy Hall will be hoping

:01:33. > :01:38.to shelter her a little bit. So that Helen can take a breather. It

:01:38. > :01:44.is interesting how many crashes we have seen, slightly worrying on a

:01:44. > :01:50.technical course, so it was to be expected. With the complicating

:01:50. > :01:56.factor of the rain, it makes for difficult conditions. The athletes

:01:56. > :02:01.will be acutely aware of bike handling. It is not difficult in

:02:01. > :02:07.terms of terrain, it has a lot of sharp turns. This is not

:02:07. > :02:15.challenging in terms of the fact they are not too many hills, it is

:02:15. > :02:22.definitely technically challenging, over 100 corners. In Athens, it was

:02:22. > :02:26.an extremely difficult course, with a very tough Hill. Another crash

:02:26. > :02:32.happening there. It is really unfortunate. Once you have gone

:02:32. > :02:38.down, it is very difficult to stay in contention. Overall, the British

:02:38. > :02:46.riders, particularly Helen Jenkins, in a good place. She is in a good

:02:46. > :02:56.position at the moment, exactly where she would want to be. We also

:02:56. > :02:58.

:02:58. > :03:06.have the rowing finals coming up. 11:30am, including the men's four.

:03:06. > :03:11.Athletics, up on BBC Three, right now. That includes Jessica Ennis in

:03:11. > :03:16.the heptathlon. Usain Bolt will be on the track inside the Olympic

:03:16. > :03:22.Stadium later on. Back now to the commentary team for

:03:22. > :03:27.the Women's Triathlon. Lucy Hall, Lisa Norden. Helen

:03:27. > :03:36.Jenkins is also with the leading pack, wearing the helmet, the

:03:36. > :03:46.yellow helmet. The world champion, the winner of the test event. This

:03:46. > :03:56.

:03:56. > :04:03.haven't seen her feature much. For the first time, we have seen her

:04:03. > :04:13.beginning to move up, in the middle of the lead pack. Roberts, from

:04:13. > :04:17.

:04:17. > :04:22.South Africa. She seems to be covered in blood. There are huge

:04:22. > :04:30.issues, because of the road conditions.

:04:30. > :04:35.The chasers have just gone through transition. Svenja Bazlen of

:04:35. > :04:45.Germany could be a threat today, at the front of this group, trying to

:04:45. > :04:52.

:04:52. > :05:02.front to try to lead out Anne Haug. She is saying, OK, we have seen

:05:02. > :05:04.

:05:04. > :05:09.Lucy Hall, coming up. She is there to do a job. Working 100% for Helen

:05:09. > :05:18.Jenkins to get into medal contention. I wonder if this is the

:05:18. > :05:28.chairman's job, to bring Anne Haug up, who will feature. -- the

:05:28. > :05:37.

:05:37. > :05:47.domestique, she has tracked the German, now she is looking for

:05:47. > :05:55.

:05:55. > :06:02.Jenkins. Svenja Bazlen is trying to this, she is covering everything.

:06:02. > :06:07.She will do 100% for the British team. This is a fascinating race.

:06:07. > :06:17.With triathlon, we look at the three disciplines, the different

:06:17. > :06:19.

:06:19. > :06:26.circumstances. But this race, a new dimension. This race is totally

:06:26. > :06:32.open at the moment. The leaders, leaving the park for the third time,

:06:32. > :06:38.down to Wellington Arch. Down the hill, past Buckingham Palace

:06:38. > :06:43.Gardens, around the Victoria Memorial again. The crowds have

:06:43. > :06:48.come out in force, Union Jacks everywhere, everyone taking care

:06:48. > :06:58.with the terms. The leaders come through the Wellington Arch for the

:06:58. > :07:05.

:07:05. > :07:14.third time, to be greeted by I wasn't sure if that 32nd gap

:07:14. > :07:23.would be closed but it has come together really quickly. We have

:07:23. > :07:29.the attacks at the front. Svenja Bazlen looks to be going again, I

:07:30. > :07:39.have to question the tactics. A third time but she hasn't managed

:07:39. > :07:46.to get away. What will this achieved? Is this tuatara -- to

:07:46. > :07:52.tire them out? The interesting battle will be between Nicola

:07:52. > :08:02.Spirig and Jenkins on the run. Jenkins is the world champion. She

:08:02. > :08:05.

:08:05. > :08:11.didn't race in Madrid, which Nicola Spirig won.

:08:11. > :08:21.You have to bring Lisa Norden into contention, the Swedish athlete,

:08:21. > :08:27.who has shown her capability of running strongly. This section,

:08:27. > :08:31.attacks at the front, backing off, it seems to be covered every time.

:08:31. > :08:41.You have to think about the frustration of individuals, teams

:08:41. > :08:51.

:08:51. > :09:00.who have a plan. We are halfway a terrific place to watch the race.

:09:00. > :09:08.You can go up and watch the race unfold. You can see Big Ben in the

:09:08. > :09:18.background, St Stephen's Tower as it is officially called. The

:09:18. > :09:34.

:09:34. > :09:41.leaders, going one way. We will Jenkins, with that yellow helmet.

:09:41. > :09:44.Bright sunshine now above this park in west London. The roads are dried

:09:44. > :09:54.out but they are still dangers. We have seen so many crashes in the

:09:54. > :09:55.

:09:55. > :10:00.early stages here. They have come back up towards the park.

:10:00. > :10:05.Nicola Spirig, in second position, for Switzerland. The pace is being

:10:05. > :10:13.generated by one of the New Zealanders, taking her turn at the

:10:13. > :10:20.front. Lucy Hall and Helen Jenkins are playing it safe in 7th and 8th

:10:20. > :10:24.position. A great position to be. Able to

:10:24. > :10:29.cover anything if there is a surprise attack but staying out of

:10:29. > :10:34.trouble and conserving energy. Helen did a vast amount of work

:10:34. > :10:40.early on. They were 30 seconds down, Lucy wasn't the lead pack, trying

:10:40. > :10:48.to slow things down. The other form acrobatics wasn't having any of

:10:48. > :10:54.that. A huge amount of work done by Helen Jenkins. Roberts, Juri Ide,

:10:54. > :10:59.Vicky Holland. This has to be the chase pack coming through. We are

:10:59. > :11:05.not making any inroads coming into this.

:11:05. > :11:11.Back with the leaders and another injection of pace from Svenja

:11:11. > :11:21.Bazlen from Germany. Svenja Bazlen is the king behind as if to say,

:11:21. > :11:22.

:11:22. > :11:26.does anybody want to have a go? Her first move was covered by Lucy Hall.

:11:26. > :11:34.Trying to protect Helen Jenkins. Nicola Spirig currently in second

:11:34. > :11:39.position, one of the big favourites. The winner of two World

:11:39. > :11:45.Championship series events. One racer we haven't seen his Erin

:11:45. > :11:50.Densham, who won in Hamburg and at the start of the world Gebbie sheet

:11:50. > :12:00.series. She might just be covering up, keeping out of trouble, waiting

:12:00. > :12:17.

:12:17. > :12:25.for a chance to strike. As they early on, but she has established

:12:25. > :12:30.herself in the leading pack. She is conserving her energy for the run.

:12:30. > :12:37.She has a tremendous pedigree, she came through as a leading junior.

:12:37. > :12:42.She had some issues with health and injury but has fought her way back.

:12:42. > :12:51.I would put her in the top medal contenders. Andrea Hewitt from

:12:51. > :13:00.using and, I haven't seen her at the front of his pack. The lady who

:13:00. > :13:06.has done a lot of work, Nicola Spirig, she is very tough. She is

:13:06. > :13:16.put in a self on the line. Whether she is trying to force the pace. I

:13:16. > :13:25.

:13:25. > :13:31.am not sure. She is making a huge One of the main contenders. She

:13:31. > :13:41.beat Jenkins into second, in Sydney. In Santiago, the result was

:13:41. > :13:55.

:13:55. > :14:00.reversed. Jenkins came first. -- She had a surprising swim. I would

:14:00. > :14:10.have expected her to be in the top 10. I wonder if it was colder than

:14:10. > :14:20.

:14:20. > :14:27.it appeared and maybe the athletes the chasers is almost two minutes.

:14:27. > :14:34.The extraordinary thing is that the Brazilian, Oliveira, the first of

:14:34. > :14:39.the fallers, with the scars of battle to show, is with that chase

:14:39. > :14:49.group. The camera mounted on the front

:14:49. > :14:51.

:14:51. > :14:56.wheel of Roberts, the south African. Darren Smith has five athletes,

:14:56. > :15:00.Roberts is another one. Each of those athletes from a different

:15:01. > :15:07.country. They are having a great impact, they work and travel

:15:07. > :15:17.together. A great impact on this particular race. These are the

:15:17. > :15:22.

:15:22. > :15:30.first out of the water, and has ridden well, protecting Helen

:15:30. > :15:35.Jenkins through the first half of his ride. She has done brilliantly.

:15:35. > :15:40.She was in that invidious position, coming out with the lead pack, and

:15:40. > :15:46.made herself known that she was not doing any work. Lucy Hall goes to

:15:46. > :15:53.the front. Who covers her? At Nicola Spirig once again. Helen

:15:53. > :15:59.Jenkins in fourth place. This is interesting. Has Lucy been told if

:15:59. > :16:05.there's a fairly big gap, maybe her work ethic has to be to try to take

:16:05. > :16:11.the speed up, give Helen a loose ride coming in. Helen can run well

:16:11. > :16:18.from a tough bike section. As can Nicola Spirig. The Wellington Arch

:16:18. > :16:25.with the four horses on top. Wonderful piece of architecture.

:16:25. > :16:29.Down Constitution Hill again. That obtained its name in the 17th

:16:29. > :16:35.century from King Charles's habit of taking a constitutional walk on

:16:35. > :16:44.the hill. It was the scene of three and -- assassination attempts

:16:44. > :16:49.against Queen Victoria in 1840, 1842 and 1849. In 1850, the former

:16:49. > :16:57.Conservative prime minister Robert Peel was thrown from his horse on

:16:57. > :17:00.Constitution Hill, by hard Park corner. He died a few days later.

:17:00. > :17:05.Sarah Groff and Emma Jackson sitting very comfortably at the

:17:05. > :17:10.rear end of this lead pack. Conserving their legs. We've seen

:17:10. > :17:14.Sarah Groff at World Championship level, we know how strongly she can

:17:14. > :17:18.run, particularly in tough conditions. The weather seems to be

:17:18. > :17:24.getting better now, the rudest drying out. I think this is an open

:17:24. > :17:29.race at the moment. The road hasn't dried up very well up here, it is

:17:29. > :17:33.shaded by the trees and it is still damp in places. We have seen a

:17:33. > :17:38.number of fallers at this stage of the race and they are taking extra

:17:38. > :17:46.care coming towards the Victoria Memorial. The gold figure on top

:17:46. > :17:49.signifiers victory. Another 25 minutes on the bike and then we are

:17:49. > :17:53.going into the third discipline. We are going to have a lot of athletes

:17:53. > :18:00.in contention unless we see a really big attack on the last three

:18:00. > :18:09.laps. I think we will have 20 athletes in conjecture and.

:18:09. > :18:13.contention. The chasing group making their way towards the palace.

:18:13. > :18:22.Going through Duke of Wellington -- Duke of Wellington Place. Nice to

:18:22. > :18:26.see it free of traffic. So many people enjoying this Olympic event.

:18:26. > :18:33.Almost a slowing down with the athletes saying OK, we've got our

:18:33. > :18:37.position, is anybody prepared? Emma Jackson, one of the younger

:18:37. > :18:43.athletes, second youngest, but a tremendous runner. Back with the

:18:43. > :18:47.leaders. There's Helen Jenkins wearing Number Ten. Two in front of

:18:47. > :18:56.her is Lucy Hall. They are both wearing yellow helmets. Nicola

:18:56. > :19:03.Spirig is just left of screen. The German is still pushing hard at the

:19:03. > :19:09.front of the field. She is trying to increase the pace generated by

:19:09. > :19:17.the front group as they come around, heading back towards the park. Back

:19:17. > :19:24.towards transition. The 43 kilometres of this bike course come

:19:24. > :19:30.and go quickly. On this middle Saturday of the London 2012 Olympic

:19:30. > :19:34.Games. The men's triathlon will follow the same course on Tuesday.

:19:34. > :19:38.Another athlete having a strong race is Gillian Sanders. We

:19:38. > :19:43.mentioned her earlier, she was a great junior and then stopped and

:19:43. > :19:47.pursued her profession, qualifying as a lawyer and based in London.

:19:47. > :19:52.When London got the Olympic Games, it focused her imagination and

:19:52. > :19:56.dedication and she decided to go for it. We get used to some British

:19:56. > :20:00.athletes going to tough South Africa to train and the Sun, and we

:20:00. > :20:06.have a South African athlete coming to work in London. She said she

:20:06. > :20:09.trains here because it is tougher. She has proved that today. She has

:20:09. > :20:19.been holding 5th or 6th place and right the way through the by

:20:19. > :20:30.

:20:30. > :20:36.in Beijing, she was fourth. Helen Jenkins, on this last lap and a

:20:36. > :20:42.half, she seems to have been very content to back off a little, back

:20:42. > :20:47.in 6th of 7th place. Maybe she's thinking that she needs to back off

:20:47. > :20:56.a little bit. Back in the park, bright sunshine. It is hotting up

:20:56. > :21:02.in the Olympic triathlon. STUDIO: We've been keeping an eye

:21:02. > :21:06.on the triathletes. I've just been speaking to Todd Leckie, the

:21:06. > :21:10.reserve for the men's race on Tuesday. What we have noticed is

:21:10. > :21:15.the cheeky girls sitting at the back of the lead group.

:21:15. > :21:20.literally the cheeky girls! Emma Jackson is a particularly good

:21:20. > :21:26.runner. Sarah Groff is sitting in the back. The risk you run by

:21:26. > :21:30.sitting at the back is if there's a crash, you get held up or you might

:21:30. > :21:36.even get taken down. Not a safe place to sit. But they are

:21:36. > :21:43.conserving energy. A lot of energy. I would watch out for her and

:21:43. > :21:47.Densham. And Nicola Spirig. Even Andrea Hewitt. When they get on to

:21:47. > :21:53.the run, that is what we will really notice, which ones will go

:21:53. > :21:58.out hard. It is a hard and fast run, it will be somebody like Dench and

:21:58. > :22:03.he will be Helen's biggest threat. If there it -- if it is a slow run,

:22:03. > :22:10.Lisa Norden is a very good sprint finisher. All of the medals will

:22:10. > :22:14.come from that lead pack. We have been talking for while and the

:22:14. > :22:21.chasing pack are not there. Vicky Holland, her races over.

:22:21. > :22:26.Pretty much. She will not feature at the front. As soon as they get

:22:26. > :22:31.at the running, we will have an idea of how it will go. I imagine

:22:31. > :22:37.they will push it as hard as they can out of transition. Lucy Hall's

:22:37. > :22:42.job with two laps to go... She has done a fantastic job. She will have

:22:42. > :22:52.to bring Helen in safely into the second transition. Yes, Helen will

:22:52. > :22:55.

:22:55. > :23:03.try to get to the front. Two laps according to plan for the British

:23:03. > :23:11.triathletes. Lucy Hall, No. 8. Number 43, and Nicola Spirig. 31 is

:23:11. > :23:17.Vodickova of the Czech Republic. We are back with the chasing group.

:23:17. > :23:27.There's Vicky Holland with the chasing group. They are coming

:23:27. > :23:30.

:23:30. > :23:34.through transition now. About 2:15 behind the leaders. We've really

:23:34. > :23:39.are getting towards the end, just over 15 minutes to go on the bike.

:23:39. > :23:45.The way the race has developed, I think we are going to have a war of

:23:45. > :23:50.contention on the run. It is the Olympics, the athletes will be

:23:50. > :23:56.prepared to put themselves on the line right from the start. Nicola

:23:56. > :23:58.Spirig will go out hard. Helen Jenkins will cover everything. Emma

:23:58. > :24:02.Jackson and Erin Densham from Australia will be prepared to

:24:02. > :24:07.follow everything. We know just Harrison will go for it,

:24:07. > :24:13.particularly on the first part of the hunt -- run. If she can make a

:24:13. > :24:18.breakaway, I think she could be a feature. There's the lady who I

:24:18. > :24:22.think will make a huge impact, Nicola Spirig from Switzerland. So

:24:22. > :24:27.strong. As a junior, her weakness was swimming, but she has worked on

:24:28. > :24:33.that. She has worked with a new coach and come on. I think she will

:24:33. > :24:37.be a real threat to Helen Jenkins. We said it was an open race, but

:24:37. > :24:42.there's half a dozen athletes in this lead group, or who have the

:24:42. > :24:52.potential to take gold. 42 is Daniela Ryf from Switzerland, on

:24:52. > :24:54.

:24:54. > :25:00.her own. Lucy Hall has just kicked away at the front of the main group.

:25:00. > :25:05.Daniela Ryf was selected by Switzerland to do exactly the same

:25:06. > :25:11.job as Lucy Hall. Her job was to protect Nicola. We've seen with

:25:11. > :25:20.both teams that things have not panned out as they would have

:25:20. > :25:28.thought. Just coming past at the house, top of your screen, and then

:25:28. > :25:31.they had left underneath the archer on the right. There's the Royal

:25:31. > :25:37.Artillery Memorial. Further to the right is the Australian War

:25:37. > :25:42.Memorial. The New Zealand war memorial is also in this park. On

:25:42. > :25:48.the left is the memorial to Bomber Command, which was unveiled in June

:25:48. > :25:52.this year by Her Majesty the Queen commemorating lives of more than

:25:53. > :25:58.50,000 Allied airmen. In the lead pack we have single lining.

:25:58. > :26:05.Somebody has gone to the front and we are now beginning to chase. We

:26:05. > :26:13.knew Lucy Hall was up there. She is looking behind. We will start

:26:13. > :26:18.getting some pace going into this. Densham, Emma Jackson from

:26:18. > :26:22.Australia. Both very happy to sit back. It looks like we have an

:26:23. > :26:28.attack from one of the Slovakians on the left-hand side. That has

:26:28. > :26:32.gone awry. We still have this big pack together. They are now three

:26:32. > :26:36.or four abreast again and people will now be very, very reluctant to

:26:36. > :26:39.go to the front and make a lone break. If they do that, their legs

:26:39. > :26:45.will be tired and they will not be able to carry on into the 10

:26:45. > :26:54.kilometre run. They are in front of a palace again. We are back with

:26:54. > :27:03.the chasing group. These are the leaders. Hall and Jenkins. McIlroy

:27:03. > :27:06.of New Zealand. For leaders are beginning to stretch slightly.

:27:06. > :27:12.Taking care on this left-hander which has seen a number of

:27:12. > :27:16.casualties. Laura Bennett is back at the front now. She did so much

:27:16. > :27:22.work earlier on the bike after a tremendous swim, then seemed to

:27:22. > :27:27.back off a little bit. Now, with less than two laps to go, just

:27:27. > :27:32.prepared to go to the front again. Laura is a very, very strong run-up.

:27:32. > :27:40.I'm not sure if she can maintain this sort of pace over 14

:27:40. > :27:45.kilometres of a hard bike ride. First five kilometres, she will be

:27:45. > :27:50.there. Maybe as the race progresses, it is going to be quite tough for

:27:50. > :27:55.her. We will have to wait and see. A great athlete, a long career,

:27:56. > :28:01.still in contention. The leaders will once again spot the chasers as

:28:02. > :28:11.they go in opposite directions. The leaders going up Constitution Hill,

:28:12. > :28:17.

:28:17. > :28:21.for chasers going in the opposite of Gillian Sanders. Andrea Hewitt

:28:21. > :28:25.on the right hand side. I think the leading contenders are beginning to

:28:25. > :28:31.look around at each other, checking out who's there, has anybody

:28:31. > :28:35.dropped off? We thought Johnson would be a very, very strong runner,

:28:35. > :28:39.but with that mechanical problem, she's no longer in the leading pack.

:28:39. > :28:43.The athletes will be very, very aware of that and they will know,

:28:43. > :28:53.almost within the second, the capabilities of the athletes around

:28:53. > :28:55.

:28:55. > :29:04.them. Back towards the park. Now Fortes -- their thoughts are on the

:29:04. > :29:12.arrival in transition. In a little while, the change from the bike to

:29:12. > :29:19.the run. They have a 10 kilometre run coming up. Four 2.5 kilometre

:29:20. > :29:26.loops around the park. They don't leave the park during the run.

:29:26. > :29:29.Jackson and Sarah Groff seem to have taken out a season ticket on

:29:29. > :29:35.these positions in the pack, following everybody through.

:29:35. > :29:41.Reluctant to take the lead and why should they. Lucy Hall, off the

:29:42. > :29:47.front, it seems to be picking up the pace a little bit, I'm

:29:47. > :29:52.wondering if this is pre-planned by the British team. The amount of

:29:52. > :29:56.time isn't important in transition. What is important is giving

:29:56. > :30:04.yourself that little bit of room so you will not be hindered by the

:30:04. > :30:09.other athletes. It gets very, very busy in there. The foot will be

:30:09. > :30:14.taken out of the shoes, they will be cycling the last couple of

:30:14. > :30:24.hundred barefoot. There's Helen Jenkins. Are we going to seek a

:30:24. > :30:37.

:30:37. > :30:43.over, huge discussions. Over one lap to go but we seem to have an

:30:43. > :30:52.injection of pace. Erin Densham covering. Gilly Sanders, what a

:30:52. > :30:57.race she is having. There are plans being hatched. Lucy saying, what

:30:57. > :31:05.you want me to do? Do you want me to lead you up or do you want me to

:31:05. > :31:11.protect you? If you are joining us, a recap. Lucy Hall of Great Britain

:31:11. > :31:17.was first out of the water after 1,500m in the Serpentine. She, and

:31:17. > :31:23.five others, set off with about 30 seconds advantage over the chasing

:31:23. > :31:26.group out of the water. That small group then group into a sizable

:31:26. > :31:33.group who you are now seeing crossing the bridge over the

:31:33. > :31:38.Serpentine, heading on their way back out on lap six. Within that

:31:38. > :31:46.group are the main contenders, Helen Jenkins, Nicola Spirig, Erin

:31:46. > :31:54.Densham, Mariko Adachi, Lisa Norden of Sweden, Sarah Groff of America.

:31:54. > :32:02.Emma Jackson also, one of the contenders. Nicola Spirig is the

:32:02. > :32:10.winner of two competitions at World Championship level. She is one of

:32:10. > :32:15.the main threat to Helen Jenkins. There are an awful lot of variables.

:32:15. > :32:22.One of the main things has been the wet surface which has claimed a

:32:22. > :32:31.number of casualties. It is wide open. Nothing has been decided. We

:32:31. > :32:39.have lost a few with mechanical figures -- problems, and crashes.

:32:39. > :32:49.Helen Jenkins is in contention. 7th position. Nicola Spirig coming out

:32:49. > :33:01.

:33:01. > :33:11.of that corner. Looking to see if Haug. Still with a time gap of over

:33:11. > :33:15.

:33:15. > :33:25.Holland among them, the third of the British contenders. Lucy Hall

:33:25. > :33:32.is still at the top of the leader board. She is the youngest

:33:32. > :33:41.competitor in the race today. Also in that lead group, Laura Bennett,

:33:41. > :33:49.one of the oldest competitors. There was huge controversy end this

:33:49. > :33:53.selection process and M playing -- of employing a domestique. We have

:33:53. > :34:03.seen this in the French road race. A relatively new thing in the

:34:03. > :34:06.

:34:06. > :34:12.triathlon. We saw it in Beijing in the men's triathlon. Tactics well

:34:12. > :34:18.employed to work. It is relatively new, still some uncertainty. A lack

:34:19. > :34:27.of knowledge among athletes, a sense of unfairness. But, it seems

:34:27. > :34:37.to be working. Lucy Hall has done a magnificent job for Great Britain

:34:37. > :34:50.

:34:50. > :34:56.the women. Nicola Spirig, after that initial push, has backed off.

:34:56. > :35:06.Andrea Hewitt has been content to stay near the back, Gilly Sanders,

:35:06. > :35:11.shadowing Erin Densham. Vendula Frintova, a consistent performer.

:35:11. > :35:21.She has been happy to stay at the back. Bent has done an enormous

:35:21. > :35:31.

:35:31. > :35:41.sure of these left and right-handed turns. Under the arch again, down

:35:41. > :36:01.

:36:02. > :36:08.hill, but it is an incline. The only climb of any description in

:36:08. > :36:17.the competition. Just beginning to approach Hyde

:36:17. > :36:21.Park, on to serpent heard -- Serpentine Road, then into the

:36:21. > :36:25.transition and the final discipline where we will seek an explosion.

:36:25. > :36:29.There will be a fast read-out on the run, everybody will be trying

:36:29. > :36:36.to cover it. In the first couple of kilometres, we will see people

:36:36. > :36:46.trying to break the other athletes and get a way, to get into a real,

:36:46. > :36:51.

:36:51. > :36:57.honest foot race. In this six Olympic races, we have had one Prix

:36:57. > :37:02.race favourite to win. Is that going to happen again? Everyone has

:37:02. > :37:09.been saying Helen Jenkins. She is one of the pre-race favourites. The

:37:09. > :37:19.pressure is there. It is an open race, ladies and gentlemen, and we

:37:19. > :37:23.

:37:23. > :37:33.will see something very special on Buckingham Palace, the building

:37:33. > :37:40.

:37:41. > :37:50.visitors' most want to see when opportunity to get some liquid in.

:37:51. > :37:52.

:37:52. > :37:59.Looking over. No huge injection of pace. A red flag going up, to be

:37:59. > :38:03.aware that the road becomes narrower. People reluctant to take

:38:03. > :38:08.the lead. But they don't want to stay at the back, so we are seeing

:38:08. > :38:14.that spread. People changing direction, juggling for position.

:38:14. > :38:19.Nicola Spirig does not want to get away. Svenja Bazlen has been

:38:19. > :38:23.aggressive on this ride. Getting herself into a good position.

:38:23. > :38:33.Everyone at still in contention. No one making a serious move to get

:38:33. > :38:44.

:38:44. > :38:54.group. 22 with ideas of taking an Olympic medal, as they come past

:38:54. > :39:09.

:39:09. > :39:13.Olympic transportation system. Around that left hand corner, you

:39:13. > :39:19.can see the athletes spreading, no one wants to take the risk of

:39:19. > :39:28.crashing out on one of the last bid terms. Looking for some space in

:39:28. > :39:38.front. By acting into the park. -- Back

:39:38. > :39:43.

:39:43. > :39:49.competitor is with the chase group. Another burst of speed from the

:39:49. > :39:57.front, courtesy of Svenja Bazlen, of Germany, she has done this a

:39:57. > :40:02.dozen times, trying to move the pace forward.

:40:02. > :40:08.Looking for some open space in transition. It won't make a huge

:40:08. > :40:13.difference but it may give her more space. You can see the athletes

:40:13. > :40:22.bending down, very shortly, they will be getting their feet out of

:40:22. > :40:27.the shoes, it saves time in transition. The rules, they have to

:40:27. > :40:37.make sure all of their equipment goes into that little box, to keep

:40:37. > :40:42.

:40:42. > :40:52.a clean field of play. Then it will ride. And Nicola Spirig is leading

:40:52. > :41:21.

:41:21. > :41:29.-- red line. They get a rapturous goes out of transition. Now they

:41:29. > :41:38.have 10 kilometres, 10,000m, to run, to decide the Olympic medals, in

:41:38. > :41:43.the London Triathlon, 2012. A group of 23 will shortly begin to spread,

:41:43. > :41:53.as the stronger runners come to the front. And the weaker of runners

:41:53. > :41:53.

:41:53. > :42:01.get left behind, it is all about to be decided, we then Hyde Park. --

:42:01. > :42:07.within Hyde Park. Helen Jenkins is in 6th position at this stage. Now,

:42:07. > :42:14.she moves on to the shoulder of Andrea Hewitt with Lisa Norden in

:42:14. > :42:20.front. Getting herself in the perfect position.

:42:20. > :42:29.Lucy Hall, great job for Great Britain. You told me not to get

:42:29. > :42:39.emotional! Anja Dittmer, in her 4th Olympic Games for Germany. Now we

:42:39. > :42:55.

:42:55. > :43:02.winner from the chase group make her way up the field. And a

:43:02. > :43:06.challenge for a top ten position. Riveros Diaz it is a strong

:43:06. > :43:12.contender, she has finished in their position in the Madrid World

:43:12. > :43:18.Championship series. She has a lot of work to do. We will keep an eye

:43:18. > :43:24.on her progress. Leaving transition with an awful lot of work to do, to

:43:25. > :43:34.challenge for Olympic success today. An indication of how much the speed

:43:35. > :43:54.

:43:54. > :43:58.Jenkins, Nicola Spirig, Lisa Norden. Is that Erin Densham? Lucy Hall has

:43:58. > :44:03.been a solid worker for Helen Jenkins. She was first out of the

:44:03. > :44:08.water, she did an awful lot of hard work on the bike. But her running

:44:08. > :44:18.straight will let her down today. Helen Jenkins of Great Britain

:44:18. > :44:24.

:44:24. > :44:29.stage of the Olympic triathlon. Helen Jenkins in front. How is this

:44:29. > :44:35.looking to you, it is this the team like a gold medal?

:44:35. > :44:41.CHRISSIE WELLINGTON: I would have expected her to push the pace early

:44:41. > :44:46.on. She hasn't got the strongest finishing kick, so she will look to

:44:46. > :44:51.go out fast. There are a lot of strong runners. Nicola Spirig

:44:51. > :44:57.worked very hard on the bike but is capable of a fast run. Andrea

:44:57. > :45:07.Hewitt, at a phenomenal run there, Lisa Norden as well. Erin Densham

:45:07. > :45:17.recently run -- won a fast race in Hamburg. Helen is in a great

:45:17. > :45:21.

:45:21. > :45:27.and training has gone into this. These athletes will have been

:45:27. > :45:30.training for six hours a day. Also doing strength and conditioning

:45:30. > :45:35.work, nutrition is incredibly important, of course. They will

:45:35. > :45:40.have prepared long and hard. Will they have been round this course

:45:40. > :45:44.before? They would have done the practice swim in the week. The

:45:44. > :45:49.majority of the athletes also would have done that Test event in London

:45:49. > :45:56.last year, which was run over the same course. They would not have

:45:56. > :46:02.had an opportunity to bike for a course this week. I assumed the

:46:02. > :46:06.majority will also have run part or all of this four lap course. As far

:46:06. > :46:12.as Jenkins is concerned, she will want a steady race at this point.

:46:12. > :46:17.If it ends up being a sprint, that doesn't favour. She will want to go

:46:17. > :46:23.out very, very fast, which she is doing, but she has not managed to

:46:23. > :46:27.put any time between herself and some of the other strong runners. A

:46:27. > :46:31.sprint finish probably would not favour higher, but I'm sure that is

:46:31. > :46:35.something she has been working on an practising. I would not counter

:46:35. > :46:41.out if there was a sprint finish. It looks beautiful, the way they

:46:41. > :46:46.are running through Hyde Park. There's a grandstand for ticket-

:46:46. > :46:50.holders to this event, but also people have just turned up on the

:46:50. > :46:56.day to watch the triathletes go past. If you're wondering about the

:46:56. > :47:03.athletics, that is under way on BBC Three. Jessica Ennis has been in

:47:03. > :47:07.action in the long jump. She is just about to start the long jump.

:47:07. > :47:12.This is an exciting last 30 minutes or so of this women's triathlon.

:47:12. > :47:22.Will it be a gold medal for Helen Jenkins? She has been helped along

:47:22. > :47:24.

:47:24. > :47:29.the way by Lucy Hall. Let's get Triathlon at the front of the

:47:29. > :47:34.Olympic field. Erin Densham of Australia, Elin Jenkins from Great

:47:34. > :47:39.Britain, Nicola Spirig from Switzerland. -- Helen Jenkins. All

:47:39. > :47:47.of those athletes have One World Championship Series events so far

:47:47. > :47:55.this season. Spirit has won two, Densham has won two. Jenkins won

:47:55. > :48:03.the Olympic test event in Hyde Park. That was 12 months ago when they

:48:03. > :48:07.tested the Olympic route. Jenkins with Densham alongside, and spirit.

:48:07. > :48:12.-- Spirig. The three best triathletes in the world at the

:48:12. > :48:18.moment. Lisa Norden is with them as well. They are starting to drop a

:48:18. > :48:25.few of the weaker runners. Jenkins balls water over her head in an

:48:25. > :48:29.attempt to keep cool. -- Paul's water. We are beginning to lose

:48:30. > :48:34.some of the less able runners. Rivas was right up there on the

:48:34. > :48:44.bike, but she has been dropped. This is one of the chasing groups,

:48:44. > :48:51.

:48:51. > :48:56.a group of five. Adachi, four Roy, There are one or two runners which

:48:56. > :49:01.include Lucy Hall. I think she is next along the road along the

:49:01. > :49:06.second time. That is the group where we will keep our focus.

:49:06. > :49:09.Densham alongside Densham, with Norden and Spirig. And Degner and

:49:09. > :49:15.Laura Bennett have both been dropped off the leading group. We

:49:15. > :49:21.are down to nine at the front. The row of Spain is still there, as is

:49:21. > :49:27.Harrison. Sarah Groff from the USA is still there. Wearyingly, Andrea

:49:27. > :49:34.Hewitt. -- wearyingly. She had a good swim, she was happy to stay on

:49:34. > :49:39.the bike and take as much pace as she could. Clap one has gone

:49:39. > :49:43.already. The pace of this is very fast indeed. We saw Gillian Sanders,

:49:43. > :49:51.who was right at the front of this group as they came onto the run,

:49:51. > :49:59.she has dropped off. That lead group of 20 is now down to nine.

:49:59. > :50:05.Eight. Laura Bennett was dropped off. Who else has gone? Is Harrison

:50:05. > :50:10.still there? She was in the lead group. I can't see her. The

:50:10. > :50:15.Spaniard is there. If there's any surprise, it could be her. She has

:50:15. > :50:18.been very, very consistent. Don't Groff and she would look good? I

:50:18. > :50:24.don't think Emma Jackson has moved from the last position in any pack

:50:24. > :50:32.so far. Nicola Spirig is taking in water. Maybe she is feeling the

:50:32. > :50:37.effects. Beginning to really make an impact, Helen Jenkins. She wants

:50:37. > :50:41.a hard run, she doesn't want to leave it to a sprint. If she does,

:50:41. > :50:47.Nicola Spirig and Lisa Norden could be very, very threatening. Sarah

:50:47. > :50:50.Groff is a great run and if Helen keeps pushing the pace, we may well

:50:50. > :51:00.see Andrea Hewitt, Nicola Spirig and Sarah Groff moving up to join

:51:00. > :51:05.her. Anne Haug looks exhausted. Roberts running nicely. Riveros

:51:05. > :51:11.from Chile is surprisingly a long way back in the field. Vicky

:51:11. > :51:18.Holland, the third of the British entries today, on her shoulder.

:51:18. > :51:24.That is the scene in triathlon -- transition. Some of the stragglers

:51:24. > :51:29.coming through. Looking at Riveros Diaz, she needed to be in the swim

:51:29. > :51:34.pack. She has always acknowledged she needed to work hard. She will

:51:34. > :51:39.not be able to get in contention. Far too far down to be able to

:51:39. > :51:43.cover this sort of break. I'm sure the winner will come from that

:51:43. > :51:53.leading -- those leading a people. We think Harrison and then it

:51:53. > :52:02.

:52:02. > :52:07.dropped off. We still have. -- we Jackson were anonymous during the

:52:07. > :52:13.43: at a bike. They kept themselves clear of danger. Sat quietly at the

:52:13. > :52:17.back of the pack. Laura Bennett was in contention, but now the fourth-

:52:17. > :52:23.placed finisher from Beijing in 2008 has been dropped by the

:52:23. > :52:28.leaders, along with an your dinner. There's Harrison, born in Sheffield,

:52:28. > :52:31.racing for France. Her running skills are not up to the mark at

:52:31. > :52:36.this Olympics. Bennett is the oldest in the field, still going

:52:36. > :52:42.strong, but out of medal contention. Densham leads the way with Jenkins

:52:42. > :52:52.and Spirig in second and third. Norden is just behind her, then the

:52:52. > :52:54.

:52:54. > :52:59.ruler of Spain. Then it is Groff of the USA followed by Hewitt. Jackson

:52:59. > :53:06.is losing touch with the leaders. Jackson is coming off the back. She

:53:06. > :53:12.will have to make a huge effort to get back on. I think Andrea Hewitt

:53:12. > :53:17.just appears to be struggling a little bit to hold contention.

:53:17. > :53:23.Andrea Hewitt has got her back in. Sarah Groff from the USA look so

:53:23. > :53:27.before the first time. She looks to be in a tiny bit of difficulty.

:53:27. > :53:33.Densham, Nicola Spirig in second place, then Lisa Norden, then Helen

:53:33. > :53:40.Jenkins. Hewitt and Groff have both got themselves back. Jackson is now

:53:40. > :53:47.working extremely hard. Second youngest athlete in the field.

:53:47. > :53:52.Desperately trying to hold on to the leading pack. And you did much

:53:52. > :53:59.of Germany running with Jess Harrison of France. Not in

:53:59. > :54:06.contention for medals now. Bennett from the USA trying to keep contact

:54:07. > :54:13.with the two in front of her. Back with the leaders. Densham forcing

:54:13. > :54:18.the pace at the front. Norden to her left. Spirig just behind. Then

:54:18. > :54:28.Jenkins. Hewitt looked like she might be losing contact, but she

:54:28. > :54:29.

:54:29. > :54:37.has managed to maintain the pace. Groff has been chopped. -- dropped.

:54:37. > :54:40.He absolutely essential for Andrea Hewitt to regain contact. The 20

:54:40. > :54:46.became eight and six and it is now down to five. Laura Bennett is

:54:46. > :54:56.trying to hold on to the two in front. It looks like we are down to

:54:56. > :55:06.

:55:06. > :55:10.five in front. It looks like Emma Spirig is third at the moment.

:55:10. > :55:18.Norden looks calm and composed as well. Just sitting in behind his

:55:18. > :55:21.Helen Jenkins could -- who moves to her right. Groff and Jackson are

:55:21. > :55:27.watching the leaders go away from them on the final stage of the

:55:27. > :55:31.Olympic triathlon. The leading group is six, but it might be about

:55:31. > :55:36.to become just four as the Spaniard and Hewitt are beginning to

:55:36. > :55:42.struggle with the pace. Absolutely right. The intensity of this place

:55:42. > :55:48.is not easy to realise how tough it is. There's been no easing off

:55:48. > :55:51.whatsoever. Andrea lost contact, she came back, she almost lost

:55:51. > :55:56.contact again on the downhill section, but she has re-established

:55:56. > :56:06.as. If that happens for a third time, that leading six will be down

:56:06. > :56:08.

:56:08. > :56:16.to four. They are on their second lap. The leaders clocked 8.23 for

:56:17. > :56:23.the first two and a half kilometres. Sarah Groff is having to go it

:56:23. > :56:28.alone. She is in 7th or 8th position. She finished the swim in

:56:28. > :56:34.a tough, 7th after the pipe, out of the medals towards the end of the

:56:34. > :56:38.Olympic triathlon. The toughest position to be in. Worked so hard,

:56:38. > :56:44.knew she was there. The six is down to five, the Spaniard has dropped

:56:44. > :56:48.back. Hewitt has stayed in contact, but there's no easing off. Co

:56:48. > :56:57.almost to stumble by Helen Jenkins. She seems to be tracking Nicola

:56:57. > :57:02.Spirig. The Spaniard trying desperately to get back. 55 started

:57:02. > :57:12.the triathlon. There's now a group of five going for the Olympic

:57:12. > :57:15.

:57:15. > :57:20.women go along the course. They are just about to come into transition.

:57:20. > :57:24.Graham Bell and myself have been watching them. Helen is in a really

:57:24. > :57:29.great position, but if you are supporting her for gold, you can't

:57:29. > :57:34.relax. There are some very, very dangerous girls with her. For one

:57:34. > :57:41.thing they need to do is drop Nicola Spirig. You are being

:57:41. > :57:45.champion. A Lisa Norden has a great sprint. Andrea Hewitt last year

:57:45. > :57:51.would have been a big threat, but this year she doesn't look quite as

:57:51. > :57:56.strong. I think the main threat will be Densham. She has had some

:57:56. > :58:01.real problems over the last few years. She had a heart operation in

:58:01. > :58:05.2009, had to be pulled out of the water into more in. She has come

:58:05. > :58:10.back to form this year and this is the Australia and that knocked out

:58:10. > :58:18.Emma Snowsill, the reigning Olympic champion, from the Australian team.

:58:18. > :58:23.The grandstand is going crazy as they come through transition. Real

:58:23. > :58:28.threats to Helen. Nicola Spirig and Erin Densham, those would be my

:58:28. > :58:33.medal contenders. Those of the three. Lisa Norden not quite so

:58:33. > :58:41.much. They will ramp up the pace towards the end. If they drop Lisa

:58:41. > :58:46.Norden, the medals will come from those three. She is on her way.

:58:46. > :58:50.one of the previous Test events, she had that magnificent break

:58:50. > :58:56.through and did so well. She must be thinking back on that and

:58:56. > :59:00.wondering what if. Andrea Hewitt is still in 5th position, but she

:59:00. > :59:07.hasn't lost contact. For front-five as the stragglers come through

:59:07. > :59:13.transition. Generous and sympathetic applause for some of

:59:13. > :59:17.these competitors. I'm looking at the pace splits on the first and

:59:17. > :59:22.second lap. The first five athletes, the pace has remained exactly the

:59:22. > :59:28.same throughout the first and second lap. It hasn't been an

:59:28. > :59:36.increase, but it is just that constant pressure and the other

:59:36. > :59:40.athletes haven't been able to stay with that sort of pace. Those

:59:40. > :59:50.leading 5 are away. If Sarah Groff can get back, that would be

:59:50. > :59:51.

:59:51. > :59:57.sensational. Behind the leading group of five. Riveros making a

:59:57. > :00:03.move through the field. She was third in Madrid. She was fourth in

:00:03. > :00:07.Kitsbuehel. She's a good runner, but there's an awful lot of work to

:00:07. > :00:17.do for Riveros deals. She did not get things right on the water on

:00:17. > :00:22.

:00:22. > :00:26.back through the field. Round the split term. Andrea Hewitt stays in

:00:26. > :00:33.fifth place. Lisa Norden is in fourth but seems to be covering

:00:33. > :00:37.everything. It is Nicola Spirig, Helen Jenkins and Erin Densham.

:00:37. > :00:41.saw Paula in trouble on her bike with a mechanical problem. But a

:00:41. > :00:45.couple of years ago, she was the bright new thing for world

:00:45. > :00:50.triathlon, but here she is being lapped in the Olympic event in Hyde

:00:50. > :00:55.Park. Now there's been an injection of pace from Erin Densham. Nicola

:00:55. > :00:59.Spirig, Lisa Norden and Jenkins have all responded. Sometimes when

:00:59. > :01:04.they go round a turn in triathlon, one of the leading contenders might

:01:04. > :01:09.look for a slingshot out of the turn and kick away from the field.

:01:09. > :01:15.Densham is trying to stretch them. Jenkins so far has recovered.

:01:15. > :01:20.Norden is there. Nicola Spirig, from Switzerland, is starting to

:01:20. > :01:30.fade slightly. Densham has the lead for Australia, with Helen Jenkins

:01:30. > :01:42.

:01:42. > :01:47.Dench and -- Densham... Jenkins has lost a little bit of ground. That

:01:47. > :01:51.slingshot effect reworked. We saw Andrea Hewitt working herself back

:01:51. > :01:56.twice there when she lost contact. With the injection of pace that

:01:56. > :02:00.Densham put in, that seems to have pushed Andrea back by 25 metres. It

:02:00. > :02:04.looked like Helen Jenkins didn't cover immediately, but credit to

:02:05. > :02:13.Helen, she tried to cover it in a couple of steps. She eased herself

:02:13. > :02:18.back in. Just three medals to play for, that's going to be going

:02:18. > :02:23.through the athletes heads. Erin Densham has put at pace in nice and

:02:23. > :02:27.early. Is that a show of strength or is it may be just a little bit

:02:27. > :02:31.of a hint of vulnerability, that she does not want to leave it down

:02:31. > :02:41.to a sprint finish? Everything is covered. Alan Jenkins is in fourth

:02:41. > :02:45.

:02:45. > :02:48.place but she is covering, covering, enormous amount of noise. Helen

:02:48. > :02:52.Jenkins will take some encouragement from the fact that

:02:52. > :03:02.thousands have come out to watch her compete in this Olympic

:03:02. > :03:03.

:03:03. > :03:07.triathlon. Densham officially the leader, but Norden, Nicola Spirig

:03:07. > :03:10.and Jenkins are right up there as well. I think Helen Jenkins will be

:03:10. > :03:15.happy to be in this fourth position. She can see the other athletes,

:03:15. > :03:20.she's covering everything. She has that half a pace distance between

:03:20. > :03:24.herself and Lisa Norden. She knows the strengths and weaknesses of

:03:24. > :03:28.these athletes, she's raced against them are so many times. Andrea

:03:28. > :03:35.Hewitt dropped it off. You've got to give credit to Sarah Groff, who

:03:35. > :03:40.despite that early losing position, has just continued to work and work.

:03:40. > :03:44.Even with just that gap, you've got to say, well, maybe there is just a

:03:44. > :03:54.possibility that she might come back. Nicola Spirig looks very

:03:54. > :03:55.

:03:55. > :04:05.leaders after the Second transition when they parked up their bikes,

:04:05. > :04:11.

:04:11. > :04:16.but now she's battling for one of Olympic triathlon in Hyde Park.

:04:16. > :04:23.They are well on their way now. Almost completing the third lap of

:04:23. > :04:29.four. 10,000m in total on foot to finish off this Olympic distance

:04:29. > :04:34.triathlon. As we approach the last lap, they have eight-and-a-half

:04:34. > :04:40.minutes of pure agony and suffering to go through. Is it going to be a

:04:40. > :04:43.question of who wants it burst... Next time they are on the straight

:04:43. > :04:47.way, they will be sensing victory or sensing they can't stay with it.

:04:47. > :04:51.They can't leave it too late. Helen cannot afford to leave it too late.

:04:51. > :04:56.She knows how powerful Nicola Spirig and Lisa Norden can be on

:04:57. > :05:02.the sprint. If anything, we will hope that Helen Jenkins would look

:05:02. > :05:05.to inject some pace, perhaps as they come towards the end of lap

:05:05. > :05:11.number three. Andrea Hewitt has worked so hard but has lost her

:05:11. > :05:15.position in that lead four. Helen Jenkins begins to move to the front.

:05:15. > :05:21.Jenkins leads the Olympic triathlon. She's looking for water to cool

:05:21. > :05:28.herself down. Now she has injected a modicum of pace into the end of

:05:28. > :05:31.this third lap. Lisa Norden, in fourth place, as soon as Helen it

:05:31. > :05:37.started making a move, there was just that lengthening of stride,

:05:37. > :05:42.the elbows just pushed that little bit harder. It it was an attempt by

:05:42. > :05:46.Helen to get away, but perhaps she just wanted more space to take her

:05:46. > :05:51.drink cleanly, it was covered by Norden. Sarah Groff, what a

:05:51. > :05:56.tremendous second half of this when she has had. Coming towards the end

:05:56. > :06:00.of lap three. Helen Jenkins of Great Britain leads the Olympic

:06:00. > :06:05.triathlon, with Nicola Spirig of Switzerland in 2nd and Erin Densham

:06:05. > :06:08.of Australia in third. Norden is off, Sarah Groff is further off the

:06:08. > :06:15.pace than a camera angle may suggest, but she hasn't lost total

:06:15. > :06:20.contact. There is an outside chance of a medal here for Sarah Groff. If

:06:20. > :06:24.one of the leading group starts to fade. That really would be

:06:24. > :06:29.sensational. How has Sarah Groff done that? She is still just that

:06:29. > :06:33.little bit loose, but that was 25 to 30 metres on the previous lap.

:06:34. > :06:43.She is now to within just 10m of it. She is running by herself. She

:06:44. > :06:50.

:06:50. > :06:56.looks very confident. This is where three of four. All eyes in the park

:06:56. > :07:03.on Helen Jenkins of Great Britain, born in Scotland, lives in Bridgend

:07:03. > :07:08.in South Wales. The double world champion in 2008 and in 2010 --

:07:08. > :07:15.2011. We had a tiny bit of dropping off in place on matt-black but it

:07:15. > :07:19.really was just tiny. -- on that lap. Perhaps that is just what

:07:19. > :07:23.Sarah Groff needed if she was maintaining her early pace. She's

:07:23. > :07:29.almost back in with that leading four. That would be very surprising.

:07:29. > :07:33.That is almost going back to the days of Australian superstar Greg

:07:33. > :07:43.Welch. He would get completely lost on the bike and have the ability to

:07:43. > :07:52.

:07:52. > :07:56.close in the run. A fabulous run Extraordinary work from the

:07:56. > :08:03.American triathletes. It is Densham who takes her time as they cross

:08:03. > :08:09.the Serpentine, where it all began and around 53 minutes ago, as they

:08:09. > :08:13.died from that blue pontoon to start this London 2012 Olympic

:08:13. > :08:17.triathlon. It was introduced to the Olympic programme in Sydney 2000.

:08:17. > :08:24.There has never been a British Olympic triathlon medallist. Maybe

:08:25. > :08:32.today, maybe Helen Jenkins as kept enough in reserve to make her mark.

:08:32. > :08:36.They continue with this final lap on the run. Where does the power

:08:36. > :08:42.lie? Sarah Groff has come from behind. She had the fastest split

:08:42. > :08:48.on lap three by about seven seconds. If she is feeling supremely

:08:48. > :08:52.confident, she knows she can cover everything. They go towards the out

:08:52. > :08:59.and back. No one of them try and slingshot of this term and kick

:08:59. > :09:03.away? Densham comes around in first and she makes a burst. She is being

:09:03. > :09:07.followed by the remaining four. They didn't let her get away.

:09:07. > :09:17.Densham tried it but it didn't succeed. The Australian was covered

:09:17. > :09:23.

:09:23. > :09:29.shoulder barge with a Sarah Groff. Sarah Groff wants to fight to win

:09:29. > :09:35.through towards the front. Now Jenkins trails in fifth. She is

:09:35. > :09:40.very handily placed. She is in fifth, a slight loss there, almost

:09:40. > :09:45.getting caught up on the feet of Sarah Groff as she comes through.

:09:45. > :09:50.We are getting closer and closer, into the final two: it has now.

:09:50. > :09:54.Densham has done so much work but, ominously, Nicola Spirig, who we

:09:54. > :10:04.know can sprint, has been happy to cover absolutely everything, as

:10:04. > :10:08.

:10:08. > :10:18.space on the left-hand side of the course. Hewitt is down in a six,

:10:18. > :10:21.

:10:21. > :10:31.been a couple of attempts by Erin Densham. The pace has been raced

:10:31. > :10:33.

:10:33. > :10:36.again. -- has been increased again. Jenkins has let Amy de Grote two

:10:37. > :10:41.two macro metres. The front four have moved clear of Helen Jenkins

:10:41. > :10:46.on the final lap. Can the British number one respond? She is digging

:10:46. > :10:51.deep. She is trying hard. Is there anything left for Helen Jenkins to

:10:51. > :11:00.offer here? The crowd doing their best to encourage her. An uphill

:11:00. > :11:06.stage there. She tries to kick and close the gap. Each lap is two-and-

:11:06. > :11:10.a-half kilometres. Just over a kilometre to go now. Credit to

:11:10. > :11:14.Helen Jenkins, that injection of pace. She's tried to re-establish.

:11:14. > :11:18.She really does have to dig him very deeply and see if there's

:11:18. > :11:22.anything left as she turns at the end of the Serpentine back into the

:11:22. > :11:27.home straight. At the moment, the two athletes who have covered

:11:27. > :11:32.everything, Nicola Spirig and Lisa Norden, are looking very strong.

:11:32. > :11:36.Erin Densham has done so much work. Sarah Groff, who has come from way

:11:36. > :11:43.back, we didn't think she was going to re-establish that she has done.

:11:43. > :11:46.She's got to be seen as somebody who is in contention. At the moment

:11:47. > :11:56.it is heartbreak for Helen Jenkins and the thousands in Hyde Park

:11:57. > :12:06.

:12:06. > :12:10.watching her race. She's been position. That is just so tough.

:12:10. > :12:15.She worked so hard for it. All the pressure of a home Olympics, the

:12:15. > :12:21.pressure of the British media and the British public wanting and

:12:21. > :12:25.willing her to win. Just losing contact on that final mile.

:12:26. > :12:30.Meanwhile, re-establishing huge contact, one of Helen's biggest

:12:30. > :12:38.rivals, Sarah Groff. She really closed everything. It looks like an

:12:38. > :12:45.injection of pace. Norden, if anything, looks the easiest of the

:12:45. > :12:48.front four. Norden has just tucked in behind throughout, happy to sit

:12:48. > :12:58.in third or fourth position. We know she's got a decent sprint

:12:58. > :13:06.

:13:06. > :13:16.finish. Will that be what clinches of those metal map -- metal

:13:16. > :13:17.

:13:17. > :13:24.to will have forward to produce something to finish amongst the

:13:24. > :13:34.medals. It looks as if the three medals will go to three of this

:13:34. > :13:43.

:13:43. > :13:49.Spirig instigated that one. Densham covered. Sarah Groff has moved on.

:13:49. > :13:54.She is so full of running. Lisa Norden is in fourth, but if

:13:54. > :13:59.anything, it's the slowest of the leading four. She must believe she

:13:59. > :14:09.has the capability to cover everything and out sprint. Nicola

:14:09. > :14:14.

:14:14. > :14:23.Spirig right the way through. Nicola Spirig is really going for

:14:23. > :14:28.the line. Nicola Spirig leads the Olympic triathlon for Switzerland.

:14:28. > :14:34.The 30-year-old was 6th in Beijing, second in the world championships

:14:34. > :14:40.in 2010. One of the oldest in the competition today. She is being

:14:40. > :14:50.tracked by Lisa Norden of Sweden. Erin Densham's head is starting to

:14:50. > :15:00.

:15:00. > :15:06.shake. The three of them come for a Nicola Spirig. What a photo finish

:15:06. > :15:11.in the Olympic triathlon! Absolutely extraordinary! Nicola

:15:11. > :15:17.Spirig and Lisa Norden hit the line together. Densham will take the

:15:17. > :15:26.bronze. It is officially a dead heat. It is a dead heat. Nicola

:15:26. > :15:32.Spirig and Lisa Norden. Officially first and second, but the times

:15:32. > :15:42.says 0.00. We watch Helen Jenkins finish. Jenkins is out of the

:15:42. > :15:49.

:15:49. > :15:56.finishes I think I have ever seen, that was hurt, guts, determination,

:15:56. > :16:02.the whole of the final lap, and Lisa Norden held her hands high,

:16:02. > :16:08.she has been given second place. Quite rightly, with the same time,

:16:08. > :16:18.and we are waiting to hear if it is the Swiss athlete in first and Lisa

:16:18. > :16:27.

:16:27. > :16:37.Norden in second, or if they are Sarah Groff, Helen Jenkins, and she

:16:37. > :16:38.

:16:38. > :16:46.wept. -- Andrea Hewitt. Two seconds between first place and third place,

:16:46. > :16:54.the closest Olympic triathlon finish I have ever seen. It is

:16:54. > :16:57.going to be a photo finish, which means, officially, if we are to

:16:58. > :17:07.believe the results graphic, it will be a gold medal for the Swiss

:17:08. > :17:12.

:17:12. > :17:16.We knew it was going to be the race of your life, and it looked like

:17:16. > :17:23.you gave it your all. I gave it everything, I could not hang in

:17:23. > :17:28.there. This has been the hardest 10 weeks of my career. I had an injury.

:17:28. > :17:32.It is really hard to get to the start line. I am amazed I was in

:17:32. > :17:39.contention for that long. I have not been able to get all of my

:17:39. > :17:43.running him. I gave it everything, and the crowd helped so much. My

:17:43. > :17:49.team have got me to the start line, and everybody shouting, I gave it

:17:49. > :17:56.everything. The crowd were willing due on, they will be so proud of

:17:56. > :18:00.how well you have done and how hard you for it. I was so grateful, it

:18:00. > :18:05.was a shame that Vicky crashed, and Lucy kept the pace on and make sure

:18:05. > :18:09.they did not get caught, so the team have been amazing. We did

:18:09. > :18:16.everything right, and I have not been able to get all of the

:18:16. > :18:22.training in. Everything else was right cover just my running legs.

:18:22. > :18:27.You could not keep up with them to was the end, he could see it that

:18:27. > :18:32.you were thinking you could not believe you were out. When I get

:18:32. > :18:37.tired, my head drops and my legs were going up. Congratulations to

:18:37. > :18:46.the top three girls, they fought for that, well deserved winners.

:18:46. > :18:50.Bad luck. Thank you. It was a thrilling finish to the

:18:50. > :18:55.triathlon. It looked like a dead heat, but we have heard that the

:18:55. > :19:01.Swiss athlete has won the gold medal. Have you ever seen a finish

:19:01. > :19:10.like that? It is unprecedented, amazing to watcher. I was jumping

:19:10. > :19:15.up and down. Then we had the four, and then Sarah Groff... She was

:19:15. > :19:19.incredible, she came up like a rocket. That would have hired her,

:19:20. > :19:27.so I am not surprised she did not make the podium, but she showed

:19:27. > :19:33.great tenacity. A phenomenal Finnish. This is how they came up.

:19:33. > :19:41.For a few moments, we did not know who had won. A two hour race, and

:19:41. > :19:46.it comes down to the wire. Milliseconds that split them. But a

:19:46. > :19:51.great racer by those two athletes. You can see the determination on

:19:51. > :19:56.their faces. It was phenomenal to say. A great result for Nicola, I

:19:56. > :20:03.have trained with her, I know her very well, and I am pleased to see

:20:03. > :20:08.that her hard work over the past 10 years has paid off. It was not the

:20:08. > :20:12.case for Helen Jenkins, she did well until the last kilometre.

:20:12. > :20:17.she said in the interview, you never know what an athlete has had

:20:17. > :20:21.to contend with, coming in. Her form was great, but she has been

:20:21. > :20:26.carrying any injury, so she did well to stay in contention until

:20:26. > :20:31.the third lap, but she did not quite have the running speed to be

:20:31. > :20:35.able to stay with the leaders towards the end. But a tremendous

:20:35. > :20:41.performance, a gutsy performance, and it affects you mentally, going

:20:41. > :20:44.into a race, when you know you are not in peak condition, said to

:20:44. > :20:49.overcome those nerves, it shows great determination. I am sure it

:20:49. > :20:55.is not the last we have seen of her. Also in the Great Britain team,

:20:56. > :21:00.Vicky Holland. I have got Vicky Holland, Helen

:21:00. > :21:07.Jenkins and Lucy Hall. You were a start, you did exactly what you

:21:07. > :21:14.were supposed to do, and you showed why you were selected. In hindsight,

:21:14. > :21:23.I should have come back a bit more. We were spread out, and I assumed

:21:23. > :21:27.that they were there. Apologies. worked well, because the pack had

:21:27. > :21:32.to work hard, and it meant the group behind did not get on to our

:21:32. > :21:39.group. It worked out well in the end, and Lucy kept the pace of, and

:21:39. > :21:43.Vicky was in the crash. We did not realise, that you were involved in

:21:43. > :21:48.the crash. It was the Emma Moffatt crash, the first lap around

:21:48. > :21:52.Buckingham Palace, one of the white lines were a bit wet from the rain.

:21:52. > :21:58.I saw her go down a couple of metres in front of May, I was

:21:58. > :22:04.taking a wide line, and I got taken out from behind. I think somebody

:22:04. > :22:10.else to cut my back wheel. I got up pretty quick, only a minor bit of

:22:10. > :22:15.damage. But I could not get on to the pack. I could not hunt down

:22:15. > :22:19.these girls, because there were some fast runners in my pack, so it

:22:19. > :22:26.was just a case of cruising round at the back. I run quicker than I

:22:26. > :22:34.thought I would. Enjoying Buckingham Palace each lap!

:22:34. > :22:40.were talking about being injured. Just after San Diego, I had a

:22:40. > :22:45.problem with my knee. Since then, it has been a battle to get here.

:22:45. > :22:51.It has not really gone away, I have been training to a lot of pain for

:22:51. > :22:56.10 weeks. We have had a lot of tears, a lot of emotion. But I have

:22:56. > :23:01.had a great team around me, and we were confident from San Diego that

:23:01. > :23:06.I would still be close, but unfortunately, it was not 100% on

:23:07. > :23:12.the run. The good thing is, we have three Sport, so I could focus on

:23:12. > :23:16.the other two. I did not have enough today. If the race had been

:23:17. > :23:24.a few months ago, I would have been all right! You felt the injury on

:23:24. > :23:30.the run? I did not feel the injury at all. It is just I have not got

:23:30. > :23:36.enough training in. I did 80% of what I would have liked to. It was

:23:36. > :23:42.close to enough, but not quite. But I gave it everything, and those

:23:42. > :23:46.girls did really well. All three of you did us proud, you showed us

:23:46. > :23:54.what a team really can do. I know you have not been together longed.

:23:54. > :24:02.We hope for better luck on Tuesday for the prize. Definitely. I reckon

:24:02. > :24:07.we have two or some chances. -- two fantastic chances.

:24:07. > :24:12.A reference to the men's event, it takes place on the same course on

:24:12. > :24:15.Tuesday. Judging by the crowds, lots of interest in this event.

:24:15. > :24:22.That was one of the things he loved to watch, the number of people that

:24:22. > :24:28.turned out. It was amazing to see, the numbers of people that came to

:24:28. > :24:32.support and watched each have on. It is a testament to the growth of

:24:32. > :24:35.the sport in this country and around the world, it is the fastest

:24:35. > :24:39.growing sport, it offers an opportunity for everybody,

:24:39. > :24:45.regardless of ability, to get involved, there is a plethora of

:24:45. > :24:52.clubs that offer being Office a cocoon of support to get involved.

:24:52. > :24:57.It was great to see. The crowds were five or six deep in places,

:24:57. > :25:03.going around these iconic landmarks. We followed them every step of the

:25:03. > :25:09.way, so let's have a look at the final moments of this race. This is

:25:09. > :25:14.just coming up to the finish. That is the moment, you can see why it

:25:15. > :25:22.ended up being a photo finish. Absolutely, I would not have wanted

:25:22. > :25:28.to be the person that decided the medals! It is unprecedented, I have

:25:28. > :25:33.never seen a finish like that. To see them sprinting to down the

:25:33. > :25:39.finish line was phenomenal. Is it unprecedented? Normally you see

:25:39. > :25:44.people ageing forwards and back, but once you get into the final

:25:44. > :25:51.park, do you know how it is going to end? Not always. The people that

:25:51. > :25:54.make the break often do so with 100 metres to go, and they sustain it.

:25:54. > :26:03.But they remained a head-to-head all the way down that finishing

:26:03. > :26:08.straight. It showed that, despite it being a two hour endurance race,

:26:08. > :26:14.you still need a strong sprint finish. It has been fabulous,

:26:14. > :26:20.watching it with you, and being encouraged. I am sure people will

:26:20. > :26:23.that add to the interest in triathlon in this country.

:26:23. > :26:28.Commiserations to Great Britain, it was not the finished that they were

:26:28. > :26:32.hoping for, it was not the medal, but the men's race takes place on

:26:32. > :26:38.Tuesday, so if you have been watching on TV, there is a chance

:26:38. > :26:44.for you to get around there, if you would like to. We have been talking

:26:44. > :26:49.about the triathlon, but it is a big day at Eton Dorney, they are

:26:49. > :26:53.gearing up for more rowing finals. A glorious moment yesterday for

:26:53. > :27:01.Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins, and today, it is the immense four

:27:01. > :27:06.in the spotlight. Another glorious morning at Eton

:27:06. > :27:10.Dorney. If you had joined us at any point earlier than today, talk

:27:10. > :27:18.about a deluge, there was more water coming down at than in the

:27:18. > :27:23.lake. But it has relented in time for the big race. We have teams in

:27:23. > :27:28.three of the four finals. The last event of the whole regatta is the

:27:28. > :27:35.women's single sculls, we do not have representation, but we have

:27:35. > :27:42.three genuine medal contenders. The coxless four will be the focus of

:27:42. > :27:47.most of our attention, and they have redrawn the lanes. Why, and

:27:47. > :27:57.how does it benefit them? In the last two days, the wind has been

:27:57. > :28:06.

:28:06. > :28:10.blowing across, and they wait -- they've redraw the Laser. They say

:28:10. > :28:14.that lane five and 6 of the better lanes, so the two semi-final

:28:14. > :28:19.winners will be in those lanes, instead of being in the middle of

:28:19. > :28:24.three and four. Whoever came second in the semi-final will get three

:28:24. > :28:29.and four, and the slowest will be on 1 and 2. All week, we have

:28:29. > :28:34.talked about how much you benefit from being one lane in the red the

:28:34. > :28:40.open banks, how many lanes away are the Australians from the British?

:28:40. > :28:45.The worst scenario, we would have been in lane six, which we are, and

:28:45. > :28:51.they could have been in lane three, but they are in lane four. That is

:28:51. > :28:57.what what to the British team? Half-a-length? Not even that. Half-

:28:57. > :29:06.a-length in your mind, probably a few feet in reality. It is how

:29:06. > :29:11.mentally few focus on it. -- you focus on it. Lasix is fantastic.

:29:11. > :29:18.The Australians could come out with more determination, or their heads

:29:19. > :29:23.could drop. Normally, when you get the two best teams racing each

:29:23. > :29:31.other in the semi-finals, the winner normally wins the final.

:29:31. > :29:36.spent some time with some Australian journalists watching the

:29:36. > :29:40.triathlon, the Australians are very downbeat, where it did you go, with

:29:40. > :29:44.the exceptions of Ian Thorpe, they are downbeat, the medal tally is

:29:44. > :29:50.falling through the floor. That does make a big difference. They

:29:50. > :29:56.are desperate to win this race. had that in Atlanta, we had morsel

:29:56. > :30:06.for medals than ever before, but only one gold medal, -- we had more

:30:06. > :30:07.

:30:07. > :30:10.silver medals than ever before. This warm-up area is a completely

:30:10. > :30:15.different area to the racing body of the lake. You can see the

:30:15. > :30:20.coxless fours are doing some of their laps Paul Stout that is the

:30:21. > :30:24.British coxless four doing a racing start away from us. Can you and

:30:24. > :30:30.kayak race next week, but rowing has the last of their finals today.

:30:30. > :30:35.A chat about the wind. The racing direction of the lake and finish

:30:35. > :30:39.line is in that direction. The wind is coming from over there. That is

:30:39. > :30:43.the advantage Great Britain have been in lane six, because they get

:30:43. > :30:48.the shelter of this Bankia. It I was warming up with Great Britain,

:30:48. > :30:55.of course I'd be nervous, but they definitely have the best of the

:30:55. > :31:04.lanes in lane six. Australia are in We are at the end of the course.

:31:04. > :31:09.All will be revealed in 14 minutes time. 11:30am that final. Now let's

:31:09. > :31:11.talk about athletics. The heptathlon is continuing in the

:31:11. > :31:15.stadium behind me. Jessica Ennis has been back in action today,

:31:15. > :31:19.focusing particularly on the long jump, the next of the seven events

:31:19. > :31:22.she's going to be doing. Let's check in with Jonathan Edwards and

:31:22. > :31:26.see how she got on. Very good news from the Olympic

:31:26. > :31:30.Stadium. Jess has jumped extremely well after a rather dodgy first

:31:30. > :31:36.round. She got it right in the second round. Denise, huge relief

:31:36. > :31:42.all round, wasn't there? Absolutely. We know about her character and how

:31:42. > :31:47.she is able to fight for position. Not a good first round jump, but

:31:47. > :31:51.absolutely nailed it on the second. A job well done by her. You got a

:31:51. > :31:54.sense she was under real pressure, she had a poor first jump, and a

:31:54. > :31:57.six metres. She saw Chernova produce a good jumper and she

:31:57. > :32:01.needed to get it right. She came in under pressure this morning, she

:32:01. > :32:06.looked tense, knowing that she had her work cut out for her. But at

:32:06. > :32:09.the same time, Jess is confident in her ability, so she know she can go

:32:09. > :32:13.out there and perform at her best when she doesn't get caught up in

:32:13. > :32:18.the crowd and understands what lies ahead, what she needs to do. She is

:32:18. > :32:23.able to produce that. I how close are we to celebrate in a gold medal

:32:23. > :32:28.for Jess? Should we even mention it? I don't things up. The next

:32:28. > :32:31.event is javelin. We know she has inconsistencies with that event. I

:32:31. > :32:35.think she just has to be saved at this moment in time. I don't think

:32:35. > :32:39.she needs to go all out, she doesn't need a personal best, she

:32:39. > :32:44.just needs to make sure her throws are solid. We know what she can do

:32:44. > :32:49.in the 800. Inside, I'm dancing. Great news for Jess. We will see

:32:49. > :32:53.Usain Bolt a little later on. We saw the second most famous athlete

:32:53. > :32:56.come out and run, Oscar Pistorius. He looked very good. You, he's

:32:56. > :33:01.coming into form at the right time both the most of what we talk about

:33:01. > :33:04.about Oscar Pistorius are his prosthetics and whether or not...

:33:04. > :33:11.Or whether he should be year competing. He is here competing,

:33:11. > :33:15.the rules allow him to compete. Now let's talk about how well he is

:33:15. > :33:19.running. He did break this morning. He's coming into form at the right

:33:19. > :33:22.time will stop that bodes well for him, he's in the semi-final. It's

:33:22. > :33:27.an outside chance that you could possibly see him in the final.

:33:27. > :33:30.Indeed. The 400m has been mixed so far this season. Nobody has really

:33:30. > :33:33.come along and taken hold of it. LaShawn Merritt, the defending

:33:33. > :33:37.champion, looked like he might but he's got an injury problem, so

:33:37. > :33:41.there's a real opportunity for him to make the final. There is an

:33:41. > :33:49.opportunity. We thought after last year it was set up for a great

:33:49. > :33:54.battle between James and Merritt. James has the ability to run it,

:33:54. > :34:02.Merritt has run it. Globally we will see Oscar Pistorius there as

:34:02. > :34:05.well. -- hopefully we will see Oscar Pistorius. We will see

:34:05. > :34:09.Jessica Ennis later on in the javelin and the 800m. The

:34:09. > :34:14.heptathlon will all be over by the end of the day. Fingers crossed for

:34:14. > :34:16.Jess. And it's all over for me this morning. The medal table is going

:34:17. > :34:21.to look very different by the end of the day, because this is the
