:00:15. > :00:21.Welcome to Olympic Park if you weren't with us on BBC1 a moment

:00:21. > :00:28.ago, the news is Britain has another gold medal, their 17th at

:00:28. > :00:32.lopped 20 twelve. It was won by the team show jumping team in a

:00:32. > :00:42.thrilling jump off against the Netherlands and there was a bronze

:00:42. > :00:45.

:00:45. > :00:51.for Beth Tweddle in the gymnastics. Las bronze for Nicola Adams in the

:00:51. > :00:59.boxing. She won her quarter finals. So plenty of success and maybe more

:00:59. > :01:03.in the velodrome. Let's rejoin Jake. We're hoping for more success. One

:01:03. > :01:08.newspaper described this place as the medal factory. It may stamp out

:01:08. > :01:15.a new medal. We're going into what could be the final race for the

:01:15. > :01:21.men's sprint. It is Jason Kenny against Gregory Bauge. What would

:01:21. > :01:26.Jason be thinking about now? You can't have two riders who know each

:01:26. > :01:32.other better. Yes I guess it could come down to who is the most

:01:33. > :01:39.composed. I think Kenny has better legs than Bauge just now. We work a

:01:39. > :01:47.lot with the sigh Coll skrist, I did a lot. -- psychologist. You're

:01:47. > :01:51.not thinking about the podium and that medal. He is has -- he has one

:01:51. > :01:55.more race. He will be thinking one lap at a time and get this guy into

:01:56. > :02:00.the position I want him to be. You are not thinking about outcomes.

:02:00. > :02:04.Wen you do that, it puts pressure on you and you're not thinking what

:02:04. > :02:09.the world or Britain is thinking. You're thinking right here and

:02:09. > :02:14.right now. Whether its you against the best in the world on the tour,

:02:14. > :02:19.or whether in here when you're in an undue rans event, how much are

:02:19. > :02:27.you tailoring what you do to your specific opponent? A lot of people

:02:27. > :02:35.do look at the other opponents. But I don't. In unDee rans racing you

:02:35. > :02:39.shouldn't. -- endurance racing. Track sprinting a lot different. I

:02:39. > :02:47.have been one to say I don't understand why you base your

:02:47. > :02:53.tactics around beating somebody else. That is what happened in the

:02:53. > :03:00.road race. I have always been, we will have a plan and if we execute

:03:00. > :03:06.it we should win. You're wondering why the crowd are roaring, still

:03:06. > :03:11.work out who will make it through to the final of women's sprint. The

:03:11. > :03:16.men's sprint is a tiet that will Chris Hoy picked up in the last

:03:16. > :03:23.Olympics. How do you think Kenny has dealt with the pressure of

:03:23. > :03:33.being chosen ahead of Chris Hoy. is very laid back and calm. Even in

:03:33. > :03:37.Beijing, I was impressed with him. He wasn't faezed -- fazed. As a

:03:37. > :03:43.senior athlete, you have so much exposure to other events you start

:03:43. > :03:47.the build up emotional baggage. With Jason there is not that. He

:03:47. > :03:51.just shows up and rides his bike. He is very well compose and can get

:03:51. > :03:58.together and focus on what he needs to do. I don't think he worries

:03:58. > :04:04.about kwhra people say. Can I tell you a story about him in Beijing.

:04:04. > :04:10.We threw home and he lent me one of his medals so I could get an

:04:10. > :04:15.upgrade on the flight! Well they come in handy. So it is Kenny

:04:15. > :04:21.against Bauge. We have spoken about Bauge, now Bauge, he is a multiple

:04:21. > :04:26.world champion. He has the making of Kenny in this second heat?

:04:26. > :04:33.here today, don't think so. It will be close, but GB are good at

:04:33. > :04:37.perfecting what we call the taper, that final phase of training. They

:04:38. > :04:42.just seem, we always seem to get the edge. At the World Championship

:04:42. > :04:46.in the team sprint, France was half a second quicker than us. With

:04:46. > :04:50.turned that around half a second for the Olympics and it is

:04:50. > :04:54.reflected here with other performances by GB. Even myself I

:04:54. > :04:57.didn't predict anywhere near the performances that we have seen from

:04:57. > :05:03.Britain. So whatever they do and put in the water, it works. They

:05:03. > :05:07.have done well. To make it clear, the main course here is Jason Kenny

:05:07. > :05:14.against Gregory Bauge for the gold medal in the men's sprint. But

:05:14. > :05:21.before that, we will give you starter. This will be interesting.

:05:21. > :05:27.Phillip is taking on the Australia Perkins. A gutsy performance from

:05:27. > :05:34.Phillip in the first heat. Can he do something? I think so it was

:05:34. > :05:38.kind of close. He is being himself. He is brave. He is and again he is

:05:38. > :05:44.very talented. Some people have it and some people get it. Sprinting

:05:44. > :05:49.is very hard to learn and you either get it or you don't. Njisane

:05:49. > :05:58.got it and he is only 21 and he will develop and get better and

:05:58. > :06:03.faster. This is the fight for the bronze. The riders are preparing

:06:03. > :06:09.themselves. Now it is all about man versus man. In a moment Jason Kenny

:06:09. > :06:15.will go for gold. But first we will tpwiend out who will get the bronze.

:06:15. > :06:20.So over to your commentators. Top top Njisane Phillip with a problem.

:06:20. > :06:25.He has got to win this to take it He has got to win this to take it

:06:25. > :06:31.to a decider. Let's hope his coaching will reflect and he is not

:06:31. > :06:35.carrying a legacy of doubt, having been beaten by the Australian in

:06:35. > :06:43.race one. Best performance by far from the rider from Trinidad. He

:06:43. > :06:48.has mixed wit the best here and shown he is a worthy finalist. Per

:06:48. > :06:52.-- Perkins, very strong in that last round. He needs to try and

:06:52. > :07:00.control the Australian. But Perkins has so much experience. It is hard

:07:00. > :07:09.to know what he can do. Roger Gibbon was their great sprinter in

:07:09. > :07:18.the 60s. This man is a successor to those riders. Australia have won

:07:18. > :07:25.gold medal in the competition with Ryan A by a -- with Ryan Baillie in

:07:25. > :07:29.Athens. Can Perkins get a bronze here? They're not hanging around

:07:29. > :07:32.and Njisane Phillip looks like he wants to get on with this. And he

:07:33. > :07:39.caught hip napping there and Perkins saw the door open and the

:07:39. > :07:47.Australian has gone down the inside and committed himself. The man from

:07:47. > :07:55.Trinidad was caught. That gap won't be closed. Njisane cannot do it.

:07:55. > :07:58.Perkins salutes the crowd and the bronze is his. And in a quick time.

:07:59. > :08:05.Njisane Phillip has tired a bit as the competition has gone on.

:08:05. > :08:11.Consistency is a big part of it. Perkins rode well there. Totally

:08:11. > :08:17.commuted -- committed with three quarters of a lap to go. Even then

:08:17. > :08:27.he looked back and he wasn't going to let himself be used as a carrot.

:08:27. > :08:29.

:08:29. > :08:32.It was a great ride. Jason Kenny I can tell you is already out, being

:08:32. > :08:36.strapped in. Just in the well of the track, ready for race two.

:08:36. > :08:41.Bauge as well. So they will will be coming up to take their positions

:08:41. > :08:46.on the line as we just, that was where the victory was underpinned.

:08:46. > :08:52.The door opened and Perkins went for it and there was no man Njisane

:08:52. > :08:59.Phillip could close that gap down. The applause is ringing out now. As

:08:59. > :09:05.out on to the track come the two gladiators who will fight this out

:09:05. > :09:13.in race two. Bauge with a mountain to climb, because Kenny is brimming

:09:13. > :09:18.with confidence and he won race one comfortably. They will have to with

:09:18. > :09:23.wait for Shane Perkins to go. On the other side of the track, he is

:09:23. > :09:29.celebrating. Kenny, yes, he can win. Having seen him in the first race,

:09:29. > :09:36.I think that I'm inclined to agree. There is the face of Bauge. He must

:09:36. > :09:44.be thinking what a cheek to intrude on my turf, I'm the triple world

:09:44. > :09:47.champion. But he knows he is racing against a terrier, 24-year-old

:09:47. > :09:52.Kenny from Bolton.Less looking to continue the gold rush and the

:09:52. > :09:59.crowd, it is absolutely packed to capacity and on the banking

:09:59. > :10:04.everyone is standing to get a good view. I was going to say standing

:10:04. > :10:10.room only. But there is no standing room left. It has beeny night. But

:10:10. > :10:14.somehow we have more people here tonight. This is it. Doubt is not

:10:14. > :10:24.an option and they cannot have any doubt in their minds now. Kenny

:10:24. > :10:26.

:10:26. > :10:33.leading it off. If he can win this it is two strait and he is the

:10:33. > :10:39.Olympic champion. This is what makes the nerves jangle, believe me.

:10:39. > :10:46.Conditiony just keeping an eye out on -- Kenny just keeping an eye out

:10:46. > :10:51.on Bauge, this big Frenchman. certainly not out of it. He is

:10:51. > :10:56.still in fantastic form here. Kenny knows it. He will take some

:10:56. > :11:06.controlling. But that last round, I was surprised at the pace of Jason

:11:06. > :11:08.

:11:08. > :11:16.Kenny. Completed the final 200 metres at 70 kilometres an hour.

:11:16. > :11:22.Listen to the crowd. Skhr the coach just shouting something to Keny --

:11:22. > :11:27.to Keny I -- shouting something to Kenny. Now into the back straight.

:11:27. > :11:34.One and a half laps to go. Will Kenny take Bauge on from the front.

:11:34. > :11:40.Is his confidence that much? But a lap and Kenny with one lap to go.

:11:41. > :11:45.Standing between him and the gold. Bauge trying to come up. He is not

:11:45. > :11:52.going to do it. Kenny has got the head of race and Bauge won't take

:11:52. > :11:57.it. Hen erKenny is the champion and wins the gold and he won it in

:11:57. > :12:03.style with fantastic confidence. So lack at this, the celebrations

:12:03. > :12:13.unfolding and Bauge had no answer at all to Jason Kenny. Silver in

:12:13. > :12:13.

:12:13. > :12:19.Beijing, gold in London, what a handing over of the mantle. He is a

:12:19. > :12:25.triple Olympic gold medallist. That is his second gold medal here.

:12:25. > :12:35.Great Britain continue to hoover up the golds. A brilliant performance

:12:35. > :12:36.

:12:36. > :12:44.by Kenny. He salutes the crowd as he rolls around. But he rode with

:12:45. > :12:49.so much confidence. Here is a chance to see the images. Fan it is

:12:49. > :12:53.aically - fantastically powerful. Bauge had nothing. He had tired

:12:53. > :12:56.through competition and that is one thing you have got to be able to

:12:56. > :13:04.sprint time after time. Kenny just looks as sharp as he did when they

:13:04. > :13:12.came in. He knew he had got it there with 100 metres to go. There

:13:12. > :13:16.is the coach going wild! So Kenny moves and carves his name into

:13:16. > :13:22.sporting mystery. He becomes the second British man to win the gold

:13:22. > :13:27.medal in the Olympic games for the sprint. The first Sir Chris Hoy in

:13:27. > :13:37.Beijing. The second Jason Kenny. Here he is and the celebrations now

:13:37. > :13:38.

:13:38. > :13:42.begin to unfold. The sixth gold for the GB cycling team. Is they're

:13:42. > :13:45.following on from Beijing. They said it wouldn't be possible to

:13:45. > :13:53.replicate that kind of performance. Well Keir think British team wasn't

:13:53. > :14:02.listening. -- well clearly the British team wasn't listening.

:14:02. > :14:06.Bauge bemused by the speed of Kenny. He is on record as having ridden

:14:06. > :14:13.the fastest second lap ever in the team sprint. Here, my goodness me,

:14:13. > :14:18.Ken Yip at his best. I remember comebt Taiting on him when he was a

:14:18. > :14:23.world junior champion. Now he has got three Olympics golds. It was a

:14:23. > :14:30.huge margin on the line. Yes at this level. I thought he would have

:14:30. > :14:36.to fight hard with Bauge, but well, in the end he dominated. There we

:14:36. > :14:42.are. They acknowledge each other's sporting ability. And Gregory Bauge

:14:42. > :14:46.knows that he met a better man here in London. Celebrations will go on

:14:46. > :14:51.long into the night here. Every time they leave the arena, the

:14:51. > :14:58.masses of crowds are all carrying the flags and celebrating and the

:14:58. > :15:08.talk as you leave as well in the station is all about the cycling

:15:08. > :15:22.

:15:22. > :15:26.achievements. But Jason Kenny is talking with his legs. Clearly was

:15:26. > :15:36.talking with his legs. Clearly was looking a bit hot.

:15:36. > :15:46.Another gold medal for Team GB, the sixth gold medal for cycling. Jason

:15:46. > :16:03.

:16:03. > :16:08.Huge congratulation. That was a spectacular piece of sprinting. So

:16:08. > :16:14.much expectation coming into this - how does it feel to deliver? It is

:16:14. > :16:20.amazing. Like you say, I hadn't even thought about it until the

:16:20. > :16:24.final round, and then it suddenly dawned on me. Knowing you have

:16:24. > :16:30.someone on the sideline who definitely would not give that

:16:30. > :16:35.second sprint away. I was really pleased to deliver for the team.

:16:35. > :16:40.silver medal in Beijing, then after that ride Chris Hoy said this is

:16:40. > :16:49.the man who will win in London, and he also predicted he would set such

:16:49. > :16:53.a fast qualifier. Is he Mystic Meg? I am beginning to wonder. He is

:16:53. > :16:59.losing his touch on Usain Bolt, didn't give him a fast enough time.

:16:59. > :17:02.You look like you are in the form of your life. We always looked

:17:02. > :17:10.Gregory Bauge would be the man to beat but you didn't even need to

:17:10. > :17:14.take him to a third ride. We were really close once again, but in the

:17:14. > :17:20.world championships he has been a slightly faster rider for start of

:17:20. > :17:25.their I qualified, or three days ago I qualified quicker so I am

:17:25. > :17:31.pleased with that. I like racing against Gregory Bauge, it is always

:17:31. > :17:36.an exciting race so I am really pleased. I will let you go and

:17:36. > :17:42.collect your third gold medal. Congratulations to Jason Kenny, the

:17:42. > :17:48.third gold medal of his career. Jamie, you shed the team sprint

:17:48. > :17:54.with him four years ago - your emotions watching that unfolding?

:17:54. > :17:59.He deserves it. Just looking at his character, when you see him being

:17:59. > :18:04.interviewed he is quite laid-back, but when he puts the helmet on he

:18:04. > :18:08.turns into a different person and it is also under siege. He is a

:18:08. > :18:16.fighter on that track, and he will not give anything away. The time

:18:16. > :18:21.trial gives a lot away. Even two tenths difference between you and

:18:21. > :18:29.your opponents shows what is ahead and he was clearly faster. Gregory

:18:29. > :18:34.Bauge threw everything he had. you really believe he didn't think

:18:34. > :18:40.about becoming the Olympic champion until just before he got on the

:18:40. > :18:44.bike? I don't know, I actually believe him to be fair. You can

:18:44. > :18:49.imagine how much energy it took out of him just fighting for his

:18:49. > :18:54.position with Chris. If you start thinking about an event after the

:18:54. > :19:00.one you are going for any way - he had to do the team sprint - it will

:19:00. > :19:04.compromise that. You have to shift your focus, and the more nervous

:19:04. > :19:11.energy you have, the more you are thinking about it, the more energy

:19:11. > :19:16.you are losing. You have to shut off your emotions. We talked about

:19:16. > :19:23.the fact British cycling were back into a corner after their dominance

:19:23. > :19:27.in Beijing, the rules changed so you could only have one rider in

:19:27. > :19:33.each competition, and as we take a look at this final ride it is worth

:19:33. > :19:38.pointing out to people that it came down to the two best sprinters in

:19:39. > :19:47.the world. Gregory Bauge is so good at this event. If it had been the

:19:47. > :19:56.old rules, you would have seen Chris and Jason at it again, and he

:19:56. > :20:00.really deserves it. Gregory Bauge has been around quite a while,

:20:00. > :20:07.probably six or seven years at this level so he is very experienced and

:20:07. > :20:11.strong. Team GB just has a way of performing on the day. Already,

:20:11. > :20:15.other nations, Germany have started asking questions about where this

:20:15. > :20:19.has come from because we are dominating once again. We have

:20:19. > :20:23.picked up a medal in everything except one event in the Velodrome

:20:23. > :20:27.and it was not expected because Great Britain slipped back in the

:20:27. > :20:34.intervening years since Beijing but it is about having form at the

:20:34. > :20:38.right time. That's right, looking at the endurance rides we came back

:20:38. > :20:42.and it was close even at the World Championships this year. We came to

:20:42. > :20:47.the Olympic Games here in London and they have hit it on the head.

:20:47. > :20:54.They saved everything they can - all the equipment and everything

:20:54. > :20:59.has been saved to use here and they have performed. We know that Great

:20:59. > :21:03.Britain have superbly equipment, and Chris Boardman makes sure they

:21:03. > :21:09.keep one step ahead of the opposition, but this was as much

:21:09. > :21:15.about stunning riding on a bike as much as the equipment. Absolutely,

:21:15. > :21:21.it is probably frustrating because some of this equipment has not been

:21:21. > :21:29.out of the cupboard for four years, like these wheels. There has been

:21:29. > :21:36.some development recently with new handlebars, New cranks. We are

:21:36. > :21:41.talking about such minuscule gaining here, but it can help. If

:21:41. > :21:46.Jason can get on to that line knowing he has the best bike in the

:21:46. > :21:52.world, even if maybe it isn't, he thinks that. The equipment, the

:21:52. > :21:57.helmet, the clothing, you have so much confidence. Chris Hoy has been

:21:57. > :22:03.nicknamed Mystic Meg, and he said four years ago Jason Kenny would

:22:03. > :22:12.win this medal. His Olympic experience is far from over. Here's

:22:12. > :22:17.24 years old, he was 20 in Beijing. A lot of the guys here, they were

:22:17. > :22:23.younger than 27 but looking at Chris Hoy, you look at how many

:22:23. > :22:29.Olympics he has done and Jason can carry on and do that, I'm sure.

:22:29. > :22:34.you think this is the sweetest gold medal for him so far? I think so.

:22:34. > :22:38.He will be proud of that. Gregory Bauge said he would rather race

:22:38. > :22:45.Chris because he is a true champion so I know there was a bit of

:22:45. > :22:50.vengeance. Come on, he has three gold medals. You can't claim he is

:22:50. > :22:56.not a real-world champion. It is maybe a slightly bitter Gregory

:22:56. > :23:01.Bauge talking their because Great Britain have won a gold medal once

:23:01. > :23:07.again. This is dominance. We have had seven events and Great Britain

:23:07. > :23:14.have picked up medals in six of them, five gold medals and one

:23:15. > :23:18.bronze. It is far from over yet. We still have Chris Hoy to go in the

:23:18. > :23:25.keirin, Victoria Pendleton in the sprint, and the omnium with Laura

:23:25. > :23:28.Trott. If you are fresh to track cycling, the omnium is all about

:23:29. > :23:35.having six events and being consistent as possible. At the end

:23:35. > :23:41.of those events, having the fewest number of points. Laura Trott

:23:41. > :23:48.dropped behind Sarah Hammer of the USA, so this is the elimination. It

:23:48. > :23:53.is a real crowd-pleaser. For those new to this, what is it about?

:23:53. > :23:59.elimination race is as simple as it is an elimination race. He will

:23:59. > :24:04.have already done that joke once. Every two laps is a sprint, and the

:24:04. > :24:10.last person gets taken out of the race. They keep whittling them down

:24:10. > :24:15.until there are two girls left and they sprint for the wind. May have

:24:15. > :24:20.a little box on their handlebars that will light up when they are

:24:20. > :24:25.out of the race. It used to be in the old days it was a bit confusing,

:24:25. > :24:30.people wouldn't go out, and it affected the result but now they

:24:30. > :24:38.Arabic more on it. It is as simple as that. What now expecting from

:24:38. > :24:42.Laura Trott? She is good at this event so she enjoys it. She is

:24:42. > :24:46.light, she has good acceleration, so I think she will be fine. I

:24:46. > :24:49.would be surprised if she was not would be surprised if she was not

:24:49. > :24:54.left in the top three at the end of this race. On her way to becoming

:24:54. > :25:01.the world omnium champion. We have seen so much excitement in the

:25:01. > :25:07.Velodrome, but even after picking up the gold medal for Jason Kenny,

:25:07. > :25:12.I think there is more to come. Keep an eye out for Laura Trott.

:25:12. > :25:16.She is a real crowd-pleaser and she excels in the elimination race. You

:25:16. > :25:22.have to concentrate on the back of the race and not the front because

:25:22. > :25:27.it is the last rider over the line that is eliminated. The place not

:25:27. > :25:34.to ride in the event is at the back because you are expending too much

:25:34. > :25:38.energy. The place to ride is like Tara Whitten at the front. Gonzalez

:25:38. > :25:43.of Venezuela has the red light flashing, and that tells her that

:25:43. > :25:48.she is eliminated. Up they have only 30 seconds of riding between

:25:48. > :25:54.these eliminations and that is why it is fast. It is really hard for

:25:54. > :25:58.the riders at the back. They have got to come a long way round. The

:25:58. > :26:06.rider at the back is clearly carrying fatigue in her legs after

:26:06. > :26:16.the points race. I reckon she just about survive because it looked

:26:16. > :26:17.

:26:18. > :26:25.like Williams, No. 14, on that occasion. Williams is the

:26:25. > :26:30.representative from Colombia, 34 years of age. Laura Trott in the

:26:30. > :26:35.middle of the field can write this from the back or the front. She has

:26:35. > :26:41.very good tactical awareness. She really gave a fright at the World

:26:42. > :26:51.Championships. She did. This time on the line, it looked very much to

:26:52. > :26:54.

:26:55. > :27:00.me like Lee of China. She is out. We see a bunch of bodies, Laura

:27:00. > :27:04.Trott sees opportunities to move forward. She is in a comfortable

:27:04. > :27:09.position now. She went through gaps in Melbourne that were not there,

:27:09. > :27:16.and we were holding our breath. Sharakova is sitting at the back at

:27:16. > :27:22.the moment, and Laura Trott is comfortably in the wheels. The

:27:22. > :27:27.Colombian that I feel should have been eliminated... His showing on

:27:28. > :27:32.our images that she was but the judges have got 10 seconds to make

:27:32. > :27:41.a call. This happened in the race with Ed Clancy, and they made a

:27:41. > :27:44.couple of errors that affected the medals table. The Polish Rider it

:27:44. > :27:51.is still sitting at the back and she surely can't last much longer

:27:51. > :28:00.because her legs must be burning from the last race. The crowd are

:28:00. > :28:06.getting quite emanated here. I think she survived. -- other crowd

:28:06. > :28:11.are getting quite animated. She has still riding this race. Williams

:28:11. > :28:16.has been eliminated twice and she is stubbornly ignoring the line

:28:16. > :28:21.flashing that she should leave the race. This can cause a problem.

:28:21. > :28:26.one rider thinks they have another one behind them so they are saved,

:28:27. > :28:34.that could really alter things here. The Polish Rider is again at the

:28:34. > :28:41.back, and Garcia of Cuba is beside her. Number 14 retired of her own

:28:41. > :28:51.volition - oh, that was Williams. Yes, she eventually understood that.

:28:51. > :28:53.

:28:53. > :28:58.Number 20 is eliminated again, Sanchez of France. Laura Trott in a

:28:58. > :29:03.great position in third place. Sarah Hammer on the front. She

:29:04. > :29:10.likes to roam around almost like an individual pursuit on the front.

:29:10. > :29:20.Surely the Polish Rider will not survive again this time? I think it

:29:20. > :29:24.

:29:24. > :29:27.was the Spaniard, Olaberria Dorronso. Tara Whitten riding a

:29:28. > :29:34.perfect elimination race, just sitting on the inside, keeping the

:29:34. > :29:44.field on her shoulder. The New Zealand rider comes to the front,

:29:44. > :29:46.

:29:46. > :29:52.and the Polish Rider inevitably moving away from the back. So aware

:29:52. > :30:01.of what is going on behind her. she make it that time? Number 30 is

:30:01. > :30:06.out. Yes, she did! Laura Trott is now moving to the back, and she

:30:06. > :30:16.nearly gave us a heart attack, watching at the World Championship,

:30:16. > :30:22.

:30:22. > :30:27.but we realised it was actually her eliminated, Wojtyra. Every

:30:27. > :30:35.confidence there. She just makes her own holes hen she needs to. No

:30:35. > :30:41.panic, just eases through. She is not a big rider. Just 20 years of

:30:41. > :30:45.age and is a product from the Go Ride scheme, where the kids gain

:30:45. > :30:52.confidence in bike control. She is at the back again. Come on, Laura,

:30:52. > :30:59.you have got to find a way. Don't go underneath. Is she going to do

:30:59. > :31:04.it. No? Yes! She wins through again. It was Garcia. I think she does it

:31:04. > :31:10.to us on purpose. Now she is on the front. Did that door open or not.

:31:10. > :31:18.She has found her way through. Oh dear! Trott's gone through is now

:31:19. > :31:22.on the front. That was Garcia that was eliminated. Seven laps

:31:22. > :31:30.remaining now. Edmondson on the outside trying to move around. It

:31:30. > :31:35.is getting quicker. Trott having to sit there. Edmondson is one of the

:31:35. > :31:41.big danger. I think Whitten's gone. The Canadian. And joint leader in

:31:41. > :31:47.the competition. That is a real scalp. That is great for Laura

:31:47. > :31:53.Trott. There is the back wheel of Whitten. Whitten's gone out early

:31:53. > :31:59.and Laura Trott with profit from that. She is holding the field at

:31:59. > :32:04.bay. Whitten was fourth in this at the World Championships. D'Hoore of

:32:04. > :32:14.Belgium coming through. Whitten has been a world champion twice as well.

:32:14. > :32:14.

:32:14. > :32:20.Here is Laura. Well done. Kiesanowski is out this time.

:32:20. > :32:25.Hammer comes to the front. She is the other danger rider for Laura

:32:25. > :32:31.Trott. Ed monthson coming right under neath her. You have to be

:32:31. > :32:41.careful doing that with the judges. Six riders left and at the back it

:32:41. > :32:43.

:32:43. > :32:50.is the Russian. Roman -- Romanyuta is there. And there is D'Hoore.

:32:50. > :32:55.Here is Romanyuta. On the line that was close. Was it Wild or

:32:55. > :33:00.Romanyuta? I think it was the Belgian. Number seven it was.

:33:00. > :33:05.D'Hoore is out. And the field is thinning out. Laura Trott still in

:33:05. > :33:12.there. She has mved to the back of the field. She is in a great

:33:12. > :33:19.position. Loves this repeated sprints. Let's look at this one. At

:33:19. > :33:23.the back is Hammer. Cowl put her in a box here. Come on Laura, move

:33:23. > :33:31.around and Sara Hammer is in the hot seat. If Hammer goes out that

:33:31. > :33:39.will be to the advantage of Trott. Or Wild I think. Wild of

:33:39. > :33:46.Netherlands. It was Wild. But trot was in a dangerous position. That

:33:46. > :33:54.was a very strong ride from her in second. This is a dangerous lap for

:33:54. > :33:58.what you ra Trott. Hammer was driven by fear. Ed monthson is on

:33:58. > :34:03.the front. They're beginning to wind it up. Laura, you have got to

:34:03. > :34:10.find speed. Don't get put in a box. You have got to come outside. She

:34:10. > :34:18.does. Good riding there. The elimination was the Russian Roman

:34:18. > :34:23.Nuta. I thought we had called her out before. These three riders

:34:23. > :34:33.could rest tonight well clear of the rest after the first three

:34:33. > :34:39.disciplines. Here they come. Edmondson and then Hammer. And then

:34:39. > :34:48.it is Laura Trott. And you have to move up now. Don't let Ed monthson

:34:48. > :34:53.take this. Here is Laura Trott. It is a big sprint. Oh Laura Trott yes,

:34:53. > :34:58.Edmondson beaten there. If Laura Trott would win this, she has won

:34:58. > :35:03.two of the Three disciplines. A straight up sprint between these

:35:03. > :35:08.two now. She is showing she is one of the riders on form. I will give

:35:08. > :35:15.to it Laura Trott. They're riding it like a spript competition. It is

:35:15. > :35:22.almost like the event has changed. If Laura Trott wins this her points

:35:22. > :35:28.will be 12 and Hammer's will be less. Trott has got it. She comes

:35:28. > :35:32.over the top and she will win the race. The third event in the omnium.

:35:33. > :35:39.Great riding, Laura. She gets a point to that to add to her tally,

:35:39. > :35:46.so she has 12 and Hammer finishing second, she gets two and she has 12.

:35:46. > :35:52.But Trott has won two of the three events, so she is the leader.

:35:52. > :35:57.about consis tenty si. -- consistency. She is actually

:35:57. > :36:01.giggling as she goes around. She loves this event. She has won the

:36:01. > :36:06.test event, the World Championships and now she is leading at the

:36:06. > :36:16.midway point here in the Olympic Games. Laura Trott, you are a joy

:36:16. > :36:20.to watch. This for me is her speciality. She loves it. Just

:36:20. > :36:25.think, she will go to bed tonight and will be full of confidence.

:36:25. > :36:30.Tomorrow she will come out for the individual pursuit and she is good

:36:30. > :36:37.at that. Hammer has been a four- time world champion. But trot with

:36:37. > :36:41.the ride a good 3,000 as well. she was third at the World

:36:41. > :36:47.Championships. But the gap was less than a tenth of a second then. We

:36:47. > :36:52.expect a strong ride. But that was a dominant sprint. Laura Trott,

:36:52. > :36:56.here she goes, phenomenal. She was marooned at the back on several

:36:56. > :37:01.occasions. But well I don't know, with confidence she found herself

:37:01. > :37:06.through the wheels and put herself on the front. That young youthful

:37:06. > :37:13.face belies her strength and confidence. Laura Trott wins her

:37:13. > :37:17.second discipline. What a start. A nice wave to the crowd, who love

:37:18. > :37:27.her. She is such an entertainer. Hammer's pleased as well. She has

:37:27. > :37:32.had a good opening day. It is about consistency as well and that is

:37:32. > :37:42.what Hammer is about. Whitten will ride strongly tomorrow. But she had

:37:42. > :37:45.

:37:45. > :37:52.a shocker there. She was eighth. Already these riders will down the

:37:52. > :38:02.field here. Remember in the omnium, it is all about scoring the least

:38:02. > :38:07.points at the end of the six competitions. Now then I think

:38:08. > :38:14.Laura's arrived with Jill. Let's hear what she has to say. Wh a

:38:14. > :38:23.fantastic day at the office. That had the crowd on their feet.

:38:24. > :38:33.are they boog. That is not me is it? No not you. "O'I don't think. I

:38:34. > :38:34.

:38:34. > :38:41.think. We're just checking why ther booing. Oh. No unseems to know. You

:38:41. > :38:48.had a lovely smile on your face. Yes, I enjoyed it. I don't know

:38:48. > :38:53.what they're booing for. I don't know if I have been relegated.

:38:53. > :38:59.will have to go with the result. You looked strong. Yes I feel

:38:59. > :39:09.strong. I did a lot of work for the race. I can only hope for better

:39:09. > :39:13.

:39:13. > :39:21.Some confusion, we saw something that would lead to her being

:39:21. > :39:28.demoted. No she rode that perfectly. And she managed to break Sarah

:39:28. > :39:35.Hammer on the last sprint. She rode it perfectly. She was a joy to

:39:35. > :39:39.watch. It was exciting. Good bumps. She came from the back and took it

:39:39. > :39:44.up to the front. Where ever she wanted to be, she was in control.

:39:44. > :39:48.That was a beautiful race to watch. A couple of close moments. There

:39:48. > :39:55.were, but that is about thrilling the crowd. I think she is doing it

:39:55. > :39:59.for the crowd. This is that final sprint. She showed us strength in

:39:59. > :40:04.her legs. She has already picked up a gold at the games and she is

:40:04. > :40:12.still working hard. Sarah Hammer was five or ten laps before this,

:40:12. > :40:18.you could see a lot of girls were labouring. I thought Laura was.

:40:18. > :40:22.she was playing with you. She was. It is good way to do it to pick off

:40:22. > :40:27.the weaker riders at the start. You're not fighting for position

:40:27. > :40:33.and you get to the stronger riders at the finish and then you have to

:40:33. > :40:39.position yourself. But at the start you can pick them off one by one.

:40:39. > :40:44.Give us an idea how tough it is. I saw a quote where she said she

:40:44. > :40:52.likes it she rides so hard she tastes the pain in her mouth. How

:40:53. > :41:00.tough is that? It is horrible. It is a horrible vent. It builds up,

:41:00. > :41:06.but the speed gets slower and slower. And you're sprinty 30

:41:06. > :41:11.seconds. You don't want to hear that bell. But this is about

:41:11. > :41:15.consistency and not just your performance and Whitten of Canada

:41:15. > :41:18.struggling. Yes a big disappointment for Whitten. Nowhere

:41:18. > :41:26.near where she wanted to finish. That will push her down the tables.

:41:26. > :41:36.Still got the top three here. We're aiming for consistency and you need

:41:36. > :41:38.

:41:38. > :41:48.to finish top four or five to way these girls are setting off. So we

:41:48. > :41:58.

:41:58. > :42:03.are half way through. It finishes It is all about finishing the with

:42:03. > :42:10.the fewest points. Soon we will be live again and we will stand and

:42:10. > :42:16.hear the national anthem. We're not becoming overconfident. There is

:42:16. > :42:22.still a lot of medals up for grabs. And Laura Trott continues her quest

:42:22. > :42:32.for a medal. But we will see yoi shortly for that gold to be awarded

:42:32. > :42:37.to Jason Kenny. Sue. We will look for erforward to that. Jason Kenny

:42:37. > :42:45.winning Britain's 18th gold medal. If you're just come home. Here are

:42:45. > :42:52.If you're just come home. Here are the headlines. It was a stunning

:42:52. > :43:02.fifth gold for Britain as Jason Kenny beat Gregory Bauge to win

:43:02. > :43:04.

:43:04. > :43:11.sprint gold. And Britain has it first jumping gold in 60 years.

:43:11. > :43:18.Beth Tweddle is the first British woman to win an Olympic gymnastics

:43:18. > :43:25.with a bronze t. And British boxer Nicola Adams is assured of at least

:43:25. > :43:32.a bronze after winning her quarter- final. So it has been an amazing

:43:32. > :43:37.day and wonderful news for berth Tweddle, she has won world and

:43:37. > :43:44.European title, she has won her first Olympic medal. But now back

:43:44. > :43:54.to the velodrome and another victorious bri on the will stand on

:43:54. > :43:54.

:43:54. > :44:00.the podium. And well done to berth. Gymnastics are on a high. -- well

:44:00. > :44:06.done to Beth. Chris Boardman and Hugh Porter have been watching.

:44:06. > :44:09.Chris I have started to see in the papers, people are questioning how

:44:09. > :44:13.papers, people are questioning how Britain have found this form.

:44:13. > :44:19.have seen it before. I saw it in Beijing, there was a lot of success

:44:19. > :44:29.and everyone was looking for a reason. In London it is called

:44:29. > :44:32.peaking. It is to do with excellent they have done right. I heard talk

:44:32. > :44:38.of the French saying they have special wheels in bags. They put

:44:38. > :44:44.them in bags to keep them clean. It is the same wheels they used in

:44:44. > :44:48.Athens. The main thing about the wheels is they're round. And now

:44:48. > :44:53.another gold for Britain. For someone who has loved this sport,

:44:53. > :44:59.what have the last few years been like? I consider I'm a lucky person

:44:59. > :45:03.to sit here. I mean, I cannot believe ity time I come to an

:45:03. > :45:08.Olympic games, all the performance ps beat what I have seen before.

:45:08. > :45:15.Jason Kenny, I have always believed he would one day be the best

:45:15. > :45:21.sprinter in the world. I just hope that we can continue as we're doing.

:45:21. > :45:31.It is astonishing the gold rush, we are going to equal the performances

:45:31. > :45:32.

:45:32. > :45:39.They will let you take it away. A great big smile on the face of

:45:39. > :45:44.Jason Kenny, he is the Olympic champion in the men's sprint.

:45:44. > :45:47.This is the presentation of the medals for the men's sprint. The

:45:47. > :45:52.winner of the bronze medal representing Australia is Shane

:45:52. > :45:57.Perkins. He was a gold medal winner in the Commonwealth Games in this

:45:57. > :46:02.discipline, but it is silver he was after and he didn't make it through.

:46:03. > :46:11.He settles for a bronze medal. His father was a bronze medal-winner in

:46:11. > :46:18.the sprint in the Commonwealth Games the number of years ago. And

:46:18. > :46:24.the winner of the silver medal is Gregory Bauge from France. Two

:46:24. > :46:30.silver medals for him in the Olympic Games here in London. He

:46:30. > :46:40.got himself a silver in the team sprint, and now he has a silver in

:46:40. > :46:54.

:46:54. > :47:04.The Olympic champion and gold medal-winner, representing Great

:47:04. > :47:04.

:47:04. > :47:10.Britain, Jason Kenny! A silver medal-winner in Beijing takes the

:47:10. > :47:13.next step on the podium here, the top spot. He is the Olympic

:47:13. > :47:19.champion for the sprint and that is his second gold medal here in

:47:19. > :47:29.London. His tally of medals in the Olympic competition now moves to

:47:29. > :47:30.

:47:30. > :47:40.three. The battle he has had with Chris Hoy to get him here, I think

:47:40. > :48:16.

:48:16. > :48:23.that is what has made him. So emotional. The whole audience on

:48:23. > :48:33.their feet singing the national anthem. Jason Kenny, such a

:48:33. > :48:34.

:48:34. > :48:42.likeable quiet feller. Comes from Bolton, and there will be a few

:48:42. > :48:51.celebrations there. Jason Kenny, Olympic champion and golden medal

:48:51. > :48:56.winner. A silver going to Gregory Bauge of France and the bronze

:48:56. > :49:01.medal going to Shane Perkins of Australia. We have just seen

:49:01. > :49:07.confidence brimming over from Laura Trott so we could still win many,

:49:07. > :49:13.many more medals on the final day. We can look forward to Chris Hoy in

:49:13. > :49:19.the keirin. What a shot that is. Well done, you are the Olympic

:49:19. > :49:25.champion. How sweet that will feel to him.

:49:25. > :49:29.Three times he has now been crowned the Olympic champion, but that is

:49:29. > :49:36.the first medal that represents a victory in the solo event. There

:49:36. > :49:40.was so much talk about whether Richard B Jason Kenny or Chris Hoy

:49:40. > :49:46.riding, and they chose Jason Kenny - he didn't disappoint. The

:49:46. > :49:49.continuing success of Great Britain, and to his worth picking up on the

:49:49. > :49:55.discussion about other countries starting to question how Great

:49:55. > :49:58.Britain have picked up their form just up the right time for 2012.

:49:59. > :50:04.You work with the American sprinters. Are you looking at what

:50:04. > :50:09.Great Britain are doing? Are other things going on you are not aware

:50:09. > :50:17.of? I know what they have done. I was part of it, and I am trying to

:50:17. > :50:22.apply that to the USA team. We have made big advances. What they have

:50:22. > :50:26.done back home, it is a big undertaking and it is a lot of

:50:26. > :50:30.commitment from everyone. A lot of staff members don't see their

:50:31. > :50:38.family is four weeks. It is huge commitment and drive, so many

:50:38. > :50:43.different things. Obviously the equipment helps, but you can't take

:50:43. > :50:48.anything away from these athletes. I know you had a special road race

:50:48. > :50:52.bike for the Olympics and that is all to do with the Secret squirrel

:50:52. > :50:58.Club, but congratulations for everything you have done. We will

:50:58. > :51:03.see you here tomorrow in the Velodrome when there are another

:51:03. > :51:08.three big medals up for grabs. The boys were talking about peaking

:51:08. > :51:13.at the right time, what makes a champion. It is power and

:51:13. > :51:17.athleticism, but also about mental toughness and believe, and that is

:51:17. > :51:24.exactly what Dai Greene needs tonight in the 400m hurdles because

:51:24. > :51:34.he only scraped in as one of the fastest qualifiers. How much his

:51:34. > :51:34.

:51:34. > :51:39.talent, and how much is in the mind? We have been exploring.

:51:39. > :51:45.The ice is a place in the Olympic Park that very few people get to

:51:45. > :51:49.see. It is a dressing room very much like any other, but it is in

:51:49. > :51:56.places like this, the knocks and crannies of Olympic venues that

:51:56. > :52:01.gold medals will be won and lost. This is the inner sanctum, where

:52:01. > :52:04.the last few crucial moments are spent before stepping out into the

:52:04. > :52:10.megawatt lighting of the competition arena a few yards down

:52:10. > :52:15.the corridor. It is here athletes perform highly secret routines

:52:15. > :52:23.designed to take them into the zone. Here you will see some truly

:52:23. > :52:28.bizarre things. Some athletes in half trances pacing, others with

:52:28. > :52:32.their eyes closed visualising optimum performance. Some athletes

:52:32. > :52:37.en that bizarre superstitions, others offer a silent prayers. In

:52:37. > :52:45.many ways this is one of the most surreal places in sport, but also

:52:45. > :52:49.perhaps one of the most fascinating. Often the final few moments before

:52:49. > :52:54.competition are solitary. You are alone with your thoughts or perhaps

:52:54. > :52:58.your demons, but in many sports solitude is impossible. You are

:52:58. > :53:05.required to spend those final moments up close with your

:53:05. > :53:12.competitors and it is here in the call room that the mind games going

:53:12. > :53:16.to overdrive. From my perspective, these were the guys standing in my

:53:16. > :53:20.way of achieving my objective of a gold medal. I never thought it was

:53:20. > :53:25.personal. I never thought they were trying to destroy my dreams, they

:53:25. > :53:30.were simply trying to win. I did not own winning, I simply wanted to

:53:30. > :53:34.not own winning, I simply wanted to win. Champion athlete, gold-medal

:53:35. > :53:38.athletes, the gold medal mindset if you like, that type of athletes

:53:38. > :53:44.will not see pressure as a problem. They will perceive it as a

:53:44. > :53:49.privilege. I quite enjoyed it actually because the pressure is so

:53:49. > :53:54.high at that point, all other things being equal, so the person

:53:54. > :54:01.who handles that pressure best will have the best performers. There was

:54:01. > :54:07.one competitor, he asked us to pray together. I am not going to pray

:54:07. > :54:12.with you. Most of the guys did that. I am going to battle. There brutal

:54:12. > :54:17.irony is that however good you are, how many sacrifices you have made,

:54:17. > :54:22.it counts for nothing if you can't deliver when it really matters.

:54:22. > :54:32.Four years of preparation for just a few defining moments of action.

:54:32. > :54:33.

:54:33. > :54:37.This in many ways is the ultimate sliding Doors moment. The key

:54:37. > :54:43.question is do the psychological rituals that athletes used in the

:54:43. > :54:48.dressing room, and continue to use in the arena, actually work? In

:54:48. > :54:53.short, what do we really know about the dark art of performance

:54:53. > :54:56.psychology? You are already under tremendous pressure and the

:54:56. > :55:01.significance of the moment, and this is what you have been training

:55:01. > :55:06.for for so long, a dream come true to be there, and now you're just

:55:06. > :55:16.that close. You will always have an internal voice saying this is

:55:16. > :55:18.

:55:19. > :55:26.dangerous, run away. A psychologist will always say you control the

:55:26. > :55:30.controllables. You can only control how you perform. You narrowing down

:55:31. > :55:37.to something incredibly simple. Sort of ironic now as I have lost

:55:37. > :55:41.my faith, but my faith gave me perspective. It allowed me to

:55:41. > :55:46.disassociate myself from the outcome. You have to do the best

:55:46. > :55:52.you can and let the chips fall as they may. I can only be as good as

:55:52. > :55:56.I can be, and when I crossed the line, I will see where that got me.

:55:56. > :56:01.Performance psychology is to a large extent about the elimination

:56:01. > :56:06.of doubt. In many circumstances doubt is a sensible thing. If

:56:06. > :56:11.someone is trying to sell you an insurance policy, it makes sense to

:56:11. > :56:16.doubt whether what they are saying is true, but in sport doubt is

:56:16. > :56:20.catastrophic. If you do not believe, you are almost certain to fail.

:56:20. > :56:28.That is why visualising a good performance can help eliminate

:56:28. > :56:32.doubt. Superstitions provide reassurance and boost self- belief.

:56:32. > :56:41.Sue position is an interesting phenomenon, particularly in sports

:56:41. > :56:46.psychology because thoughts become things, and what we think there --

:56:46. > :56:50.what we think affects the way we feel. Does similar kind of thing

:56:50. > :56:56.happens in the field of medicine. The sugar pill with no Pharmacology

:56:56. > :57:01.whatsoever can have incredible effect, reducing pain and anxiety,

:57:01. > :57:05.even eliminating nausea so long as you believe it works. As Jonathan

:57:05. > :57:08.Edwards put it, in a different context, any belief can have

:57:08. > :57:14.astonishingly powerful effects providing it is held with

:57:14. > :57:20.sufficient conviction. Maybe that is the key. You need to find

:57:20. > :57:25.something that works for you. Every athlete is an individual. You can

:57:25. > :57:31.take out the sports psychology book and say Michael Johnson did this,

:57:31. > :57:35.Carl Lewis did this, and go on and on, but none of them are who you

:57:35. > :57:41.are and you have to find your own way. Delivering under pressure is a

:57:41. > :57:44.rather brutal thing, but also profoundly subjective one. Many

:57:44. > :57:49.athletes are overcome with nerves, others are afflicted with terrible

:57:49. > :57:55.self-doubt. Is there any wonder they reach for that particular

:57:55. > :58:01.ritual that makes sense to them? That provides reassurance and

:58:01. > :58:06.control. Prayer, superstition, visualisation, take your pick. That

:58:06. > :58:11.minute difference between victory and defeat on the biggest stage is

:58:11. > :58:20.often to be found not in scale or effort, but in the recesses of the

:58:20. > :58:25.mind. Fascinating piece by Matthew, but

:58:25. > :58:31.the British athletes have certainly got the mindset right here so far.

:58:31. > :58:35.A team gold medals, only one medal behind their total in Beijing with

:58:35. > :58:40.still six days to go. Will there be another gold medal tonight? Maybe

:58:40. > :58:45.because Dai Greene does in the final of the 400m hurdles. If he

:58:45. > :58:54.does believe, he could win another gold medal. That is what we are
