:00:37. > :00:42.all stock -- welcome back to Olympic Park. It is another busy

:00:42. > :00:50.day on basics and Britain has four medals, two gold medals and two

:00:50. > :00:54.silver has already today. Go we have seen Victoria Pendleton and

:00:54. > :01:02.the Jess Varnish disqualified from the women's team sprint but it is

:01:02. > :01:06.We have had the excitement of the setting what records and the

:01:06. > :01:11.despair of seeing an elimination from the winning team's sprint --

:01:11. > :01:16.the excitement of setting world records. Mark Cavendish has been

:01:16. > :01:22.busy watching the action unfold and there is more action to come in the

:01:22. > :01:28.men's team sprint. If you were with us on BBC One, we were not able to

:01:28. > :01:33.bring you the Australian effort in the men's team sprint. The time to

:01:33. > :01:43.beat his impressive. Australia were looking to topple Great Britain,

:01:43. > :01:56.

:01:56. > :02:04.who have set the fastest time so arena, the countdown. Bobridge is

:02:04. > :02:08.the world record holder. It looks like he's going to go two today.

:02:08. > :02:12.The second position is the most difficult of the entire race, they

:02:12. > :02:16.get no aerodynamic assistance, there is no slipstream until at

:02:16. > :02:20.least half a lap. Then the first Mans wins out of the way and you

:02:20. > :02:28.have to raise the speed. I think they have put him go in second

:02:28. > :02:38.position, Bobridge will do the lion's work today. We will see

:02:38. > :02:46.

:02:46. > :02:51.whether that news is correct. The moment, they do tend to back in in

:02:51. > :02:54.the closing stages. Bobridge has already gone into doing massive

:02:54. > :02:58.turns from the start, taking on the second man job of raising the pace

:02:58. > :03:02.and starting with big turns, they are confident in his form. The

:03:02. > :03:07.coach at the side of the track showing them they are well up on

:03:07. > :03:13.the schedule and they are going to use at least the time of the

:03:13. > :03:17.British Board. It is not as quick as Great Britain. He -- the British

:03:17. > :03:23.squad. There is still a long way to go. It's certainly is, there may

:03:23. > :03:28.have chosen a different strategy, which is to do it enough to qualify

:03:28. > :03:32.in the place that they want to. top eight teams go through to round

:03:32. > :03:40.one tomorrow. We will go right through tomorrow to the crowning of

:03:40. > :03:45.the Olympic champion. Nice, smooth style by the Australians.

:03:45. > :03:50.slightly different pacing strategy, rather than choosing the time for

:03:50. > :03:56.each lap. The coach is showing them the cumulative amount by are up or

:03:56. > :04:06.down on their schedule. -- amount they are art. Just stepped back a

:04:06. > :04:09.

:04:09. > :04:13.champions and world champions on five occasions. They have not got

:04:13. > :04:20.the answer to Great Britain here. Not at the moment, it is all about

:04:20. > :04:23.the final. You have to be in the final first. The coaches were

:04:23. > :04:33.saying they felt they were over a second off the pace of Great

:04:33. > :04:42.

:04:42. > :04:48.Britain. That is the way it is It is, he has dropped out. How

:04:48. > :04:58.costly is that going to be? It is disastrous, they have over it, two

:04:58. > :05:00.

:05:00. > :05:03.to go. It looks like to protect O'Shea... He is going to struggle.

:05:03. > :05:10.They are not having a good time and a real surprise from the Australian

:05:10. > :05:13.team. They are aiming to but the time of New Zealand under pressure,

:05:13. > :05:17.and they are ragged, this is not fluid. They are not coping well at

:05:17. > :05:24.all. A real surprise. We expected they would be the big threat, they

:05:24. > :05:34.are going to struggle to get into the final at this rate. They are

:05:34. > :05:34.

:05:34. > :05:40.very close to the time of New Zealand. Who went 3:57.Six. Clearly

:05:40. > :05:48.they are not happy. They are at the end of the race and this cannot

:05:48. > :05:56.happen quickly enough. He they have got to keep it together, nearly 3.5

:05:56. > :06:06.seconds in arrears. They are going to be pretty close to New Zealand

:06:06. > :06:41.

:06:41. > :06:49.who went 3:57.6. They are second. Australia, they are just coming up

:06:49. > :06:59.to complete the a slap. -- it is China versus Australia,, they are

:06:59. > :07:10.

:07:10. > :07:17.coming up to complete the first going to be closed. Australia take

:07:17. > :07:20.it. -- they come up to the line, it is going to be close. It was a

:07:20. > :07:27.sharp right from the Australian three. They are going to be happy,

:07:27. > :07:37.they got out of the box well. -- sharp ride. They got out of the

:07:37. > :07:37.

:07:37. > :07:45.blocks well. There were no problems. Technically an excellent race.

:07:46. > :07:53.thousandth of a second quicker than the time they posted in Melbourne

:07:54. > :07:58.when they won the gold medal. He really does fight his bike around

:07:58. > :08:08.the concluding 250, a former junior world champion. This is a great

:08:08. > :08:35.

:08:35. > :08:45.champions many times, they have versus New Zealand. Bauge will lead

:08:45. > :08:56.

:08:56. > :09:03.off for France, Sydow will do the sprint title, that takes place

:09:03. > :09:10.later. New Zealand won and sells a bronze medal in the world

:09:10. > :09:20.championships begin it. -- themselves a bronze medal. There is

:09:20. > :09:20.

:09:20. > :09:30.no change to either squad from the previous round. On a book, -- on

:09:30. > :09:36.

:09:36. > :09:46.round one of the men's team sprint. Electric start from Bauge of France.

:09:46. > :09:46.

:09:46. > :09:50.His two team-mates... New Zealand are going to be on the rack, it

:09:50. > :09:55.will be interesting to see if they are OK and that they haven't broken

:09:55. > :10:01.any of the rules. It was a terrific start. It put them in front of

:10:01. > :10:07.France. We are on to the closing stages and France have settled down

:10:07. > :10:17.to the task in hand and they come back to the line. Here come France,

:10:17. > :10:18.

:10:18. > :10:25.up to the line. 42.991, a cracking time. It makes France the quickest

:10:25. > :10:35.so far in the contest. Mitchell started at 4 Australia, for New

:10:35. > :10:43.

:10:43. > :10:53.Zealand, rather -- Mitchell started world. Go -- fastest starter in the

:10:53. > :10:59.

:10:59. > :11:09.world. Go it is but Strinic quickly between Great Britain and Japan

:11:09. > :11:45.

:11:45. > :11:55.record that was posted in the 19 years of age. The noise is

:11:55. > :12:07.

:12:07. > :12:17.deafening. Then it will be jays and and Hoy are in fantastic form. It's

:12:17. > :12:32.

:12:32. > :12:41.not busts in training, it is bound Japan, what an opening lapped.

:12:42. > :12:49.they are already well ahead. Kenny releases Chris Hoy it. This is

:12:49. > :12:56.staggering. Japan are completely blown away. Here comes the big

:12:56. > :13:02.banner, up to the line. -- the big fellow, up to the line. A world

:13:02. > :13:08.record! There are celebrating trackside, the crowd cannot believe

:13:08. > :13:14.it. They are all standing up and waving the Union flag, what a ride.

:13:14. > :13:23.It was all set up by the staggering opening 250 by Hindes. Talk us

:13:23. > :13:32.through this. It is phenomenal. took zero. Sue of a second off his

:13:32. > :13:36.personal best, what a time to do it. best. It was a different man who

:13:36. > :13:42.came out of the blocks, a blistering start and what the other

:13:42. > :13:46.Dott did. It justified that form at the moment. -- what the other two

:13:46. > :13:53.did. If he can do that in the final, surely they are going to get a gold

:13:53. > :13:57.medal. Even the French team are not going to touch that. What it means

:13:57. > :14:06.now, it is the old battle, Great Britain versus bronze or the wide

:14:06. > :14:16.off for gold and silver. Look at the opening times. Go -- Great

:14:16. > :14:20.

:14:20. > :14:26.Britain versus France for the ride said, maybe 17.3. But is a long

:14:26. > :14:31.shot. He has gone and eclipsed that with his 17.2. A fantastic time. We

:14:31. > :14:41.just need him to do it again. pressure! That is what this event

:14:41. > :14:47.

:14:47. > :14:53.is all about. It certainly is. Well, track now. This is going to be the

:14:53. > :15:01.ride off for bronze in the women's team sprint. It is going to be

:15:01. > :15:05.between Australia and Ukraine. This could be a one-sided affair. Great

:15:05. > :15:10.Britain has been disqualified from the competition, sad little

:15:10. > :15:17.Australia will be starting in the home straight, they have been the

:15:17. > :15:22.world champions. On several occasions. The experienced pair of

:15:22. > :15:30.Anna Meares. Being held back as they repaired the finishing line

:15:30. > :15:40.taped. Not ideal in this event. Caley McCulloch, getting yourself

:15:40. > :15:47.

:15:47. > :15:51.it comes to completing the first 250. The Olympic champion from

:15:51. > :16:01.Athens or the 500 metres. The event that no longer takes place in the

:16:01. > :16:08.

:16:08. > :16:15.winners in the world championships in Melbourne, beaten by Germany,

:16:15. > :16:20.the world championships in 2011, 2010 and they are going to be the

:16:20. > :16:23.side to lookout for here, in this clash for the bronze medal. To the

:16:23. > :16:33.left of hours Greene is Australia, the right, starting in the back

:16:33. > :16:39.

:16:39. > :16:49.go to Australia, who were clearly quicker than Ukraine in the

:16:49. > :16:55.

:16:55. > :16:58.a second, country mile clear off Ukraine. The dust -- the bronze

:16:58. > :17:03.medal is destined to go to Australia because Ukraine will

:17:03. > :17:13.never catch 0. 7th of second. Australia up to the line, the

:17:13. > :17:18.

:17:18. > :17:21.Anna Meares, a great, strong opening lap, slightly lower -- slow

:17:21. > :17:25.on this occasion but it was enough to do the job. Kaarle McCulloch,

:17:25. > :17:30.she is not in the best form we have ever seen her but enough to secure

:17:30. > :17:36.a medal. It was not the medal they were here for. No, they were hoping

:17:36. > :17:41.to be in the final, that is for certain. Well, this is the first

:17:41. > :17:46.time this event has been held in the Olympic Games and it appeared

:17:46. > :17:50.in the world championships in 2007. China have never won a world We

:17:50. > :17:54.Shall Overcome but they have won bronze medals and silvers and their

:17:54. > :18:02.opponents here, Germany, are the current world champions and they

:18:02. > :18:07.were the world record holders. China now have set that new world

:18:08. > :18:13.record as we confirm the teams in the gold and silver medal Clash,

:18:13. > :18:16.China versus Germany and it will be China in the home straight and

:18:16. > :18:26.Germany, the world champions, in the back straight. It is close to

:18:26. > :18:28.

:18:28. > :18:33.call, this? Well, China have really got their act together. They have

:18:33. > :18:38.been scoring their way forwards. It is good to see her in this position.

:18:38. > :18:43.She has worked hard, she has been second many, many times. Now they

:18:43. > :18:53.have a great possibility here. They have their team to the right form

:18:53. > :19:00.

:19:00. > :19:07.the world record again? They stopped the clock twice inside the

:19:07. > :19:17.mark, 32.47 is the world record they have set. They raised to that

:19:17. > :19:45.

:19:45. > :19:49.something here because they are 0.3 of a second slower than China and

:19:49. > :19:54.it is all down to the first lap. China were not 0.3 faster than

:19:54. > :19:58.Germany. Germany have to try to hold China in the first 250m. The

:19:58. > :20:03.final of the women's team spent gets under way, the contest for

:20:03. > :20:11.gold and silver medals. The first split is 125 metres, you can see

:20:11. > :20:21.who comes come out of the gate better. China have gone quicker,

:20:21. > :20:23.

:20:23. > :20:28.five at one hundredths of a second. China are leading but it is very

:20:28. > :20:38.close. Here they come back to their starting station. China take the

:20:38. > :20:41.

:20:41. > :20:47.gold medal here, 32.619 and Germany get the silver. What a contest,

:20:47. > :20:53.very hot indeed. You could see from the instant the Chinese took the

:20:53. > :21:00.front, she was the better of the two. A very low gear she chose. It

:21:00. > :21:06.is good acceleration off that. The coach is delighted. They deserved

:21:06. > :21:11.that medal. It was a great ride by them. A polished performance by

:21:11. > :21:14.China, two world records and a gold medal. They have come through since

:21:14. > :21:18.the World Championships that took place in Melbourne earlier this

:21:18. > :21:22.year, when they ended the competition with the bronze medal.

:21:22. > :21:32.It was Germany, the world champions on that occasion, who are settling

:21:32. > :21:39.

:21:39. > :21:49.for silver here. It was Australia men's team sprint to look forward

:21:49. > :22:03.

:22:03. > :22:07.arena, the result, as the Chinese Olympic champions celebrate. You

:22:07. > :22:12.will hear more about these, they will ride well in the Keirin and

:22:12. > :22:22.the sprint. That is often the way, in these events, when you get form

:22:22. > :22:26.

:22:26. > :22:29.they will take it all the way The German team looking slightly

:22:29. > :22:34.rueful. They came in as the world champions and world record holders,

:22:34. > :22:37.that has been smashed by China. China have Olympic gold,

:22:37. > :22:41.congratulations to them. As soon as the race finished you said there

:22:41. > :22:45.was something may be slightly suspect about the Chinese?

:22:45. > :22:50.looked like one of the riders, behind ride at two, she had so much

:22:50. > :22:55.speed out of the last term, from our perspective it looked like she

:22:55. > :23:01.overlapped the rider in front. It definitely looked like it. He it is

:23:01. > :23:06.difficult. It is out of the picture, to be honest come on the left. From

:23:06. > :23:11.my perspective it looked like the pursuit line on the Medway, they

:23:11. > :23:17.were neck and neck but even at that point rider one is still a good

:23:17. > :23:23.point ahead of rider two, so I don't know. I'd -- it does not look

:23:23. > :23:28.like they is too much activity from the commissaire. Not too much fear

:23:28. > :23:33.from the Chinese riders. We can see the impromptu Mexican wave in the

:23:33. > :23:37.Valegro. They are still celebrating that stunning performance, not only

:23:37. > :23:40.by the Chinese women, who it has to be said people described them as a

:23:40. > :23:46.dark horse, you would not have said they were favourites for gold?

:23:46. > :23:50.I did not have them down as the gold medal contenders. They have

:23:50. > :23:55.their sums right and they have done well today. Perhaps part of the

:23:55. > :23:58.reason for the atmosphere in here and we will get into the specifics

:23:58. > :24:01.of the men's team sprint, but we have seen three performance from

:24:01. > :24:07.the freed British teams and all those China has obscured one of the

:24:07. > :24:10.world records, we have seen three world records broken by Team GB.

:24:10. > :24:16.is a fast track, first and foremost, but you need the legs and the

:24:16. > :24:20.desire to go fast. We saw in the World Championships how strong we

:24:20. > :24:26.are as a nation so to come to a home Games with technological

:24:26. > :24:31.advances, it was always going to be the case that it would be fast for

:24:31. > :24:34.tonight and for the rest of the track cycling. I imagine Chris Hoy

:24:35. > :24:44.and the boys are thinking, excellent, now we can go faster.

:24:45. > :24:46.

:24:46. > :24:50.This team is not just about Chris Get ready for this, there is going

:24:50. > :24:58.to be some fireworks. Beijing feels like a long time ago now.

:24:58. > :25:02.COMMENTATOR: They are away, Kenny has released Hoy. Great Britain are

:25:02. > :25:07.the Olympic team sprint champions. I could not be looking forward to

:25:07. > :25:12.it any more than I am. It is very exciting, great to be 36 years of

:25:12. > :25:16.age and feel full of the enthusiasm and the joys of the sport. We have

:25:17. > :25:22.not really hit the heights in the team spent since Beijing and part

:25:22. > :25:26.of that has been Jamie retiring, big shoes to fill, literate --

:25:26. > :25:31.literally and figuratively. He was a star and held the world record.

:25:31. > :25:38.We have been trying different people, Ross and go, that Crampton,

:25:38. > :25:43.but we find a settled on Philip Hindes. COMMENTATOR: Philip Hindes,

:25:43. > :25:48.19 years of age. A good start by young Philip Hindes. His age, he is

:25:48. > :25:52.making improvements all the time. We see him potentially pulling out

:25:52. > :25:57.something very special on the day. COMMENTATOR: A lifetime best.

:25:57. > :26:05.a great guy, he fits in, he has a great sense of humour. For a kid of

:26:06. > :26:09.his age, he is almost half my age, he is sitting in really well.

:26:09. > :26:15.a really good feeling, the sprint at the minute, the team spent.

:26:15. > :26:20.Everyone is pitching to go quicker. It is a race to get Chris across

:26:20. > :26:22.the line as quick as possible. There is no point being a hero.

:26:22. > :26:27.There is a good team spirit, keeping our fingers crossed it goes

:26:27. > :26:30.well. He is great, Jason Kenny, such a

:26:30. > :26:34.quiet guy but phenomenally talented. All the talk there was about the

:26:34. > :26:38.team spirit amongst these three guys. Give us an idea of what is

:26:38. > :26:42.going through their minds as they sit down and keep warm and go for

:26:42. > :26:48.gold again? As we saw, most of them have their heads bones on,

:26:48. > :26:52.listening to their favourite music. -- headphones. At this point four

:26:52. > :26:56.years ago after the second rider I got anxious, this is it, the gold

:26:56. > :27:01.medal, I had a quick chat with the psychologist who calmed me down and

:27:01. > :27:05.I was like, right, let's do it. I said, you had better be behind me,

:27:05. > :27:10.I am going. Hopefully Philip has the same attitude. That was an

:27:10. > :27:15.astonishing opening lap, 17.2, at far better than anything he has

:27:15. > :27:19.ever done. Where he got that from, I am not sure, probably the crowd.

:27:19. > :27:24.Chris Hoy dominates the headlines. What is he like as a team mate? Is

:27:24. > :27:29.he a man motivator? Does he bring guys with him? He is extremely

:27:29. > :27:35.funny. He is one of the most down to earth guys, a gentleman, but he

:27:35. > :27:39.will ever meet. He is a true gentleman. He is funny. He likes

:27:39. > :27:44.being centre-stage when you are training and warming up and stuff,

:27:44. > :27:50.he is putting out jokes. He is a good lad. I am so happy for what he

:27:50. > :27:54.has accomplished. He deserves every ounce of it. He works so hard. He

:27:54. > :27:58.used to blow my mind when I was training with him, how much he puts

:27:58. > :28:04.into every single effort. We're talking thousands of laps over four

:28:04. > :28:07.years. I hope he walks away from these events with medals, basically.

:28:07. > :28:11.Having stepped away from the trackside and focused on your road

:28:11. > :28:16.Korea, do you miss the camaraderie and training every day, being in

:28:16. > :28:23.developed Rome? To tell you the truth I don't mistake training. It

:28:23. > :28:28.is monotonous, compared to the road. I definitely miss that bonds with

:28:28. > :28:35.the guys. Whether it is the endurance guys, the spin guys, the

:28:35. > :28:41.women, everyone together has a good time. It is a good atmosphere. You

:28:41. > :28:45.need that to get through. You push yourself and I really do miss that.

:28:45. > :28:48.OK, while we are sitting here having this conversation there are

:28:48. > :28:53.discussions going on in the middle because they run doubt now about

:28:53. > :28:56.the Chinese performance as they fought for the gold medal. The

:28:56. > :28:59.question is whether that is going to stand. As we came into this

:28:59. > :29:03.tournament we know the sports governing body were trying to clamp

:29:03. > :29:07.down on this. GB had an issue with this in the World Championships.

:29:07. > :29:11.Explain what they are looking out for and why it is such a hot issue?

:29:11. > :29:16.It is in the rule book. You are not allowed to travel past the rider in

:29:17. > :29:21.front of you. They are looking at the rules, not being any stricter

:29:21. > :29:25.than they should have been. There is a new commissaire, hop on it.

:29:25. > :29:29.Three or four team has got disqualified at the World

:29:29. > :29:35.Championships. Everyone should be let's do this perfectly so there is

:29:35. > :29:40.no question. It is a mistake from GB. Let's go live to Jill Douglas.

:29:40. > :29:45.What is the latest down there? was one of the most bizarre moments

:29:45. > :29:48.of these Games. The German team were waiting to go to the medal

:29:49. > :29:53.ceremony, where they thought they would receive a silver medal and I

:29:53. > :29:56.said, did you know you have won the gold? They did not know. I showed

:29:56. > :30:02.them on the computer, the Chinese team has been relegated. It was

:30:02. > :30:05.amazing. They have skipped down there as high as kites, thrilled to

:30:05. > :30:11.have won the gold medal. Huge disappointment for China, your

:30:11. > :30:16.heart goes out to them. Germany are now the gold medallists. Breaking

:30:16. > :30:19.news are plenty of drama here this evening. Well done, Germany. Not

:30:19. > :30:23.only are you the world champions but the Olympic champions as well

:30:23. > :30:28.but not the way you want to win an Olympic We Shall Overcome, is it?

:30:28. > :30:31.It is not but how they made that mistake, I really don't know. It is

:30:31. > :30:35.hard technically from the perspective of the rider coming

:30:35. > :30:40.around the turn, when to change, it is extremely hard. There are so

:30:40. > :30:45.many things going through your mind. It was to accelerate as hard as she

:30:45. > :30:48.could and she looked a bit of balance to be honest. We have a

:30:48. > :30:52.good you here, she looked off- balance. She might have tried to

:30:52. > :30:58.back-pedal, who knows. Until we look at some slow-motion video, we

:30:58. > :31:08.will not know. A big mistake. That is the way it goes. Hopefully at

:31:08. > :31:10.

:31:10. > :31:15.super slow speed this will help you If you're up at the back wheel of

:31:16. > :31:20.the front rider and -- if you look at the back wheel of the front

:31:20. > :31:25.rider and different will of the back rider, they pass each other.

:31:25. > :31:31.She had -- and the front wheel of the back rider. But whether that is

:31:31. > :31:36.a genuine mistake, a technical error, or they are not aware of the

:31:36. > :31:40.rules... This is the pursuit line, the middle part of the track. You

:31:40. > :31:50.can be where they want at this point. It was 50 metres prior to

:31:50. > :31:52.

:31:52. > :31:55.Is this indicative of what happens in competition? Jess Varnish has

:31:55. > :32:00.gone out of the gates thousands of times, is gearing up for a big

:32:00. > :32:06.competition, so how do they make these mistakes? A lot of it can be

:32:06. > :32:10.nerves, we will deal with nerves in a different way. Jess is an

:32:10. > :32:15.extremely young athlete, even though it wasn't really her fault.

:32:15. > :32:22.These mistakes happen, it is the Olympic Games. That is why it is so

:32:22. > :32:27.hard and everyone is so anxious. is the same with the French. It

:32:27. > :32:37.looks like there is some conversation with the French, I

:32:37. > :32:37.

:32:37. > :32:41.don't know what that is about. made a comment to one of the, CS at

:32:41. > :32:48.the World Championships -- one of the commissaires at the World

:32:48. > :32:54.Championships, they said they need to mark that point more clearly.

:32:54. > :32:59.There needs to be a cone or something. They have put pats them

:32:59. > :33:05.out, I am not sure they were there early on. -- they have put pads

:33:05. > :33:13.down there. It was a clear error, whether she was not aware of the

:33:13. > :33:20.Rolls, she should have been after the fiasco of the world

:33:20. > :33:28.championships. -- aware of the rules. I'm sure the riders would

:33:28. > :33:31.let it stand but the commissaires are strict. It is a strange

:33:31. > :33:35.atmosphere at the moment. At the moment you could hear a pin drop,

:33:35. > :33:42.everybody focused on those two Chinese riders in the centre. Chris

:33:42. > :33:49.Boardman has been calling the racing for us. What is your take?

:33:49. > :33:51.Myself and Sue Porter were watching that and we did think, we said in

:33:51. > :33:57.commentary that Guo went through very quickly, but I thought it

:33:57. > :34:03.might have been just in. We have seen the photo and it is marginal

:34:03. > :34:07.at best. It could have been either way. But too little, too late.

:34:07. > :34:15.There is no right of appeal, the commissar's word is final and they

:34:15. > :34:18.won't go back on a decision. -- the commissaire's word is final. They

:34:18. > :34:22.said at the World Championships they would be very strict on the

:34:22. > :34:28.rules. The British team fell foul of it in Melbourne and here as well

:34:29. > :34:32.with Victoria Pendleton and Jess Varnish. We see the rather dejected

:34:32. > :34:36.Chinese riders and you have to feel for them. Years of hard effort and

:34:36. > :34:42.it has shown that what they have been doing is the right thing to do.

:34:42. > :34:44.Real frustration for them, to leave without the gold medal. Absolutely.

:34:44. > :34:50.When you look at how they have ridden the whole competition, they

:34:50. > :34:56.have broken the world record on two occasions. It is a huge improvement

:34:56. > :35:02.from the world championships. To be so marginal, it is very difficult

:35:02. > :35:06.to see the infringement. The commissaires are very strict. They

:35:06. > :35:12.have seen it, they have looked on the camera. As Chris rightly said,

:35:12. > :35:15.years ago you could appeal, now you can't, it has been wiped away.

:35:15. > :35:24.Germany won the world championships earlier India, they are now the

:35:24. > :35:31.Olympic champions. It is great disappointment for the Chinese.

:35:31. > :35:34.High -- earlier in the year. Everyone is smiling and cheering

:35:34. > :35:42.because they have gone all-American are at last, they have the kiss

:35:42. > :35:45.camera on the big screen. -- American on us. Not the way that

:35:45. > :35:50.Germany wanted to win the gold medal but they are what champions,

:35:50. > :35:54.they will be delighted. They will, imagine being Jill Douglas and

:35:54. > :35:59.getting to tell them as well, that was quite funny. I am going to

:35:59. > :36:04.focus on the Chinese. Imagine being told you are Olympic champion, and

:36:04. > :36:08.then you're not. It is desperately sad. The flipside is for the German

:36:08. > :36:13.team. They were great competitors, they would have been disappointed

:36:13. > :36:17.and then they got the bonus of a lifetime to say that it is a gold

:36:17. > :36:25.medal for your troubles. They have to put it behind them, ahead are

:36:25. > :36:32.five more days of competition. Guo, it looks like she is walking off,

:36:32. > :36:42.she is not going to do the medal STUDIO: It looks like she might be

:36:42. > :36:45.

:36:46. > :36:52.It is looking like one of the Chinese riders is leaving the

:36:52. > :36:55.Velodrome. Dejection for China, delight for Germany. This was the

:36:55. > :37:05.moment that Jill Douglas got the privilege of breaking the news that

:37:05. > :37:21.

:37:21. > :37:28.Apologies for any bad language but given the circumstances, we can

:37:28. > :37:36.forgive them. I think she said, we can't believe it, in German.

:37:36. > :37:39.drama of the Velodrome and the emotion, it is incredible. We have

:37:39. > :37:46.a British men's team pushing forward, going for a gold medal

:37:46. > :37:56.this evening. It has taken the British Cycling to four years to

:37:56. > :38:00.

:38:00. > :38:04.find a first manned hi-hat who they It I kept telling them to give me

:38:05. > :38:14.an offer to come back, I think I did do right thing four years ago.

:38:15. > :38:15.

:38:15. > :38:24.I was going to be 39 here. They have done the job by producing a

:38:24. > :38:33.replacement. Just explain what Philip did so well. We are not

:38:33. > :38:41.seeing Team GB here. Japan was why slower. He has gone up well over

:38:41. > :38:45.two tents. The blink of an eye is about three tenths of a second. On

:38:45. > :38:50.a track it is happening so fast. Whether he got out of the gate a

:38:50. > :38:56.bit better, he is able to compose himself, it is reassuring. Once you

:38:56. > :38:59.have the first ride out of the way, it is a huge relief, you know what

:38:59. > :39:05.you're capable of and he has shown the coaches and his team-mates what

:39:05. > :39:09.he is capable of. I feel calm. I feel I made the right decision, I

:39:09. > :39:14.am happy to stand down. Every time I see these coaches, they say, do

:39:14. > :39:18.you want to come back? Philip has been described as the find of the

:39:18. > :39:22.century. He wasn't involved in British cycling at the team level

:39:22. > :39:26.like this just months ago, here he is competing at the Olympics, it

:39:26. > :39:30.tells you about his mental strength, to pull out a personal best when

:39:30. > :39:38.the team have the chance to ride for a gold medal. At such a young

:39:38. > :39:44.age, to be in his first Olympic Games, he could have easily thought,

:39:44. > :39:50.what if I let these guys down? It is incredible, to do that. It is a

:39:50. > :39:55.true show of what he is worth and why he will hopefully get a medal.

:39:55. > :40:01.Explain why it has been so hard for Britain to find a new man to fill

:40:01. > :40:07.your boots. It is kind of a unique position, the first rider needs a

:40:07. > :40:15.lot of strength. I was a big fellow, I did a lot of weight training, up

:40:15. > :40:22.from my background in BMX. When I was first started doing track, I

:40:22. > :40:26.was a man two. I thought I was wasting my time trying to compete

:40:26. > :40:31.these guys and I needed to focus on the number one spot. There is a lot

:40:31. > :40:36.of dedicated training, a lot of starts and accelerations. He is

:40:36. > :40:40.still young and I have no doubt that in four years, if he is still

:40:40. > :40:48.interested in riding the bike, he will be going sub 17. It just takes

:40:48. > :40:57.a lot of strength, that was my strength. I was able to produce a

:40:57. > :41:03.lot of talk off the line, so just brute strength. He has the biggest

:41:03. > :41:13.calves of anyone you will ever see! This is going to be dramatic.

:41:13. > :41:16.I am excited. Gold or silver, hopefully they are calm or

:41:16. > :41:22.collected her and hopefully they can do the same again. They had a

:41:22. > :41:26.decent gap on France. The total time at the end of the three laps.

:41:26. > :41:31.They have a bit of give. I think they need to go out and do a good

:41:31. > :41:36.ride, they have to try nothing special, just go out and repeat.

:41:36. > :41:40.had the beating of the four years ago. We will bring you the men's

:41:40. > :41:43.team sprint riding for gold very shortly. After the discussion and

:41:43. > :41:48.conversation about China and whether they should get the right

:41:48. > :41:56.to pick up a gold medal, it seems it is not to bid. Germany have been

:41:57. > :42:06.promoted to a gold medal in the marching out, and ready for the

:42:07. > :42:07.

:42:07. > :42:13.medal ceremony. I am pleased that the riders from China are there. It

:42:13. > :42:21.appeared that Guo -- Gong was marching out of the arena, but they

:42:21. > :42:25.are back and present. It is a moment that my co-commentator

:42:26. > :42:30.alongside Mick has been a part of, he knows what it is like --

:42:30. > :42:38.commentator alongside me. I know what it is like to have it all

:42:38. > :42:41.going well. I feel sorry for the Chinese. Desperately sad, but the

:42:41. > :42:48.rules are the rules, they knew them when they came in, as did every

:42:48. > :42:58.other competitor. The IOC vice- president of Germany will present

:42:58. > :43:09.

:43:09. > :43:19.The flowers will be presented by In third place, and winners of the

:43:19. > :43:20.

:43:20. > :43:27.bronze medal, the team of Australia. Anna Meares and Kaarle McCulloch.

:43:27. > :43:30.Anna Meares won the gold in Athens in the 500 metres. She gets a

:43:30. > :43:40.bronze medal in the first ever women's team sprint being held in

:43:40. > :43:52.

:43:52. > :43:58.the Olympic Games. Now Kaarle The flowers, being handed out now,

:43:58. > :44:02.which is always the tradition. We are going to hear a lot more of

:44:02. > :44:12.Anna Meares during rest of this track cycling competitions. She

:44:12. > :44:22.will be one to look out for in the of the silver medal are the team of

:44:22. > :44:37.

:44:37. > :44:42.Gong, receiving her silver-medal And now Guo, who will be one of to

:44:42. > :44:52.be competitors in the women's sprint and the women's keirin. --

:44:52. > :45:02.

:45:02. > :45:11.Smiling, but there must be a great deal of disappointment underneath

:45:11. > :45:21.those smiles. The Olympic champions and the winners of the gold medal

:45:21. > :45:27.

:45:27. > :45:37.They at the Olympic We Shall Overcome to the world We Shall

:45:37. > :45:41.

:45:42. > :45:51.The first Olympic champions to be crowned here the Velodrome in

:45:52. > :46:12.

:46:12. > :46:16.Very, very happy indeed, Germany. The look on their faces when Jill

:46:16. > :46:26.Douglas actually broke the news to them that they had been promoted to

:46:26. > :46:26.

:46:26. > :47:31.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 65 seconds

:47:31. > :47:41.the number-one spot, well, all Two very, very happy ladies. They

:47:41. > :47:42.

:47:42. > :47:46.are the Olympic champions for the team spent. -- sprint. We have got

:47:47. > :47:52.one more team sprint final to go tonight and that of course is the

:47:52. > :48:01.contest for the gold and silver for the men. Great Britain versus

:48:01. > :48:06.France. If Chris Hoy can win the gold medal in that team sprint he

:48:06. > :48:11.will equal the record of Sir Steve Redgrave, five golds. At the moment

:48:11. > :48:21.he has four golds and one silver. The first silver Caimin the team

:48:21. > :48:25.spent in Sydney in 2000. I have already seen Bradley Wiggins set

:48:25. > :48:28.the unprecedented record of more medals in the Olympic Games

:48:28. > :48:34.competitions by a British competitor come when he won the

:48:34. > :48:39.gold in the time-trial the other day, raising his number to seven.

:48:39. > :48:45.It is astonishing. Running just a little late because we have had

:48:45. > :48:52.drama in the arena with relegations and false starts. Two more races

:48:52. > :49:02.here to tidy up day one. First on the track will be the team's of

:49:02. > :49:18.

:49:18. > :49:22.sprints we will see them riding for gold, silver and bronze but before

:49:22. > :49:25.we get into that, we will look at Twitter and everybody is saying,

:49:25. > :49:29.why would Great Britain thrown out of the competition completely

:49:29. > :49:34.because of the infringement that they incurred, however, China pick

:49:34. > :49:38.up a silver medal. Can you explain that? I am not able to quote the

:49:38. > :49:42.rule book. It is within the realm you are in. If you are within the

:49:42. > :49:48.realm of 14 you are relegated to the bottom of that role. If you are

:49:48. > :49:52.in the realm for one and two, you are relegated to two. That is what

:49:52. > :49:58.I make of it. I thought that for a second earlier on, wondering what

:49:58. > :50:02.would happen, but they get put down, that race, and the race was the

:50:02. > :50:06.gold and silver. China had earned the right have either a gold or

:50:06. > :50:11.silver. Sadly, for Great Britain, it put them race at the bottom of

:50:11. > :50:17.the time sheet, so they did not get a chance to write for a medal. Now,

:50:17. > :50:22.you can see Germany gearing up. They described this as their first

:50:22. > :50:26.priority at these Games. Do they have what it takes to beat the

:50:26. > :50:31.Australians? Now back issue Porter and Chris Boardman.

:50:31. > :50:35.Right on time, looking at Australia preparing for the contest against

:50:35. > :50:40.their opponents, Germany. This is the right off for the bronze medal.

:50:40. > :50:44.On the left, Germany, on the right, starting in the back straight, the

:50:44. > :50:49.team of Australia. I wake we go. Australia are the current world

:50:49. > :50:56.champions. These are the early stages, so important to get out of

:50:56. > :51:01.the gate and post at quick time for the first lap. Already Germany are

:51:01. > :51:07.ahead by 0.24 of a second. There is the first it's late, Australia are

:51:07. > :51:14.not 0.3 back. A staggering opening lap. Germany in charge of this

:51:14. > :51:18.contest. It is all the bronze medal. Germany are not 0.23 ahead.

:51:18. > :51:24.Australia have not got an answer to get back on terms and Australia,

:51:24. > :51:31.try as they might, with so last man, can he get back on terms? It is

:51:31. > :51:39.close. 0.14 is the difference. Germany take the bronze medal.

:51:39. > :51:44.was all about the first lap. 17.1 seconds. A fantastic opening lap.

:51:44. > :51:49.Australia were a couple of bike lengths down, too much to make up

:51:49. > :51:55.in a competition of three laps. were right, Chris. Getting out of

:51:55. > :52:00.that gate is so important. When you have a man like they do, who

:52:00. > :52:07.composed 17.136, it is almost impossible to peg back -- who can

:52:07. > :52:11.post. They have worked so hard for this event. It is almost a form of

:52:11. > :52:16.weight lifting, to drive out of the gate like this. You almost don't

:52:16. > :52:23.need to breeze for an effort of less than 20 seconds. A lot of

:52:23. > :52:28.muscle definition there. They release the final rider. Now, the

:52:28. > :52:33.raw is beginning to resonate around the arena because we are getting

:52:33. > :52:38.ready for the final of the men's team sprint. This is going to be an

:52:38. > :52:42.absolute cracker. It is Great Britain versus France. Great

:52:42. > :52:51.Britain in the right off that they just recorded went very quick

:52:51. > :52:56.indeed, to set a world record of 40 tip -- 47.... Listen to the raw.

:52:56. > :53:01.The crowd are standing up as they welcome the three representatives

:53:01. > :53:06.of Great Britain, Philip Hindes, the 19-year-old will lead-off. He

:53:06. > :53:13.blazed his way around the boards in 17.2 in the previous round. There

:53:13. > :53:18.is Chris Hoy, just preparing. In the middle, Jason Kenny. Kenny and

:53:18. > :53:28.Hoy have gold medals from four years ago. It will be a formidable

:53:28. > :53:29.

:53:29. > :53:34.trio of France in the back straight, led off by Gregory Bauge. Well,

:53:34. > :53:38.Gregory Bauge is the fastest starter in the world. The next

:53:38. > :53:42.fastest starter in the world is on the other side of the track, young

:53:42. > :53:48.Philip Hindes. He has to produce a personal best again here, if they

:53:48. > :53:54.are going to stay in contention. is going to be a thriller. Away we

:53:54. > :54:00.go! The final of the men's team sprint. Philip Hindes leads off, he

:54:00. > :54:06.has to post a 17.2 to contain the efforts of Gregory Bauge. France

:54:06. > :54:11.are behind already. Hines is rising to the challenge. Yes, Great

:54:11. > :54:17.Britain are leading. It is another 17.2 by Philip Hindes. Now it is

:54:17. > :54:22.Jason Kenny. Storming around the track. France are on the back but.

:54:22. > :54:27.It is not 0.2 behind. France are never going to Paul this back. Here

:54:27. > :54:34.comes Chris Hoy. Hoy is coming to the final turn, lining up. The

:54:34. > :54:39.crowd are going mad! Gold medal for Great Britain. The new world record,

:54:40. > :54:44.42.6. I don't believe what I am seeing here! They are going quicker

:54:44. > :54:52.and quicker and Great Britain have won the gold for the team sprint.

:54:52. > :54:58.Jason Hinds, -- Philip Hindes, Jason Kenny, Chris Hoy, the 5th

:54:58. > :55:03.gold medal for Sir Chris Hoy, equalling the record for Sir Steve

:55:03. > :55:10.Redgrave. Talk us through that, Chris. What a ride x to measure --

:55:10. > :55:14.what are right! Exciting, Philip Hindes had to do the right of his

:55:14. > :55:19.life there. He has been put in a high-pressure positions. To coming

:55:19. > :55:22.to a race like this, never been in a situation like this before,

:55:23. > :55:27.posted another 17.2 second lap. They desperately-needed that if

:55:27. > :55:31.they were going to defeat the might of France and it they did it, all

:55:31. > :55:36.three of them all the form of their lives. The coach there with days

:55:36. > :55:42.Brailsford, they can be rightly proud of themselves -- with dace

:55:42. > :55:48.Brailsford. A fantastic job, well done. What a performance. There is

:55:48. > :55:52.a VIPs, you won't get anybody more important than the assembled the

:55:52. > :55:55.the I P heirs. That tears are pouring down Jason Kenny, his

:55:55. > :55:59.second gold medal. He was in the team that won the gold medal in

:55:59. > :56:04.Beijing. Looking at the form he has got, he has a good chance of

:56:04. > :56:09.beating Gregory Bauge in the sprint later in these championships. The

:56:09. > :56:12.celebration is now beginning to unfold. Philip Hindes grabs the

:56:12. > :56:17.Union flag to do a lap of honour. When you think he had to dismiss

:56:17. > :56:23.the fall early on, Chris? It is dodgy, giving him the flab -- the

:56:23. > :56:30.flag. He was wobbly with both hands on the bars. They should pass it on

:56:30. > :56:35.to somebody more experienced. There is someone who is. Sir Chris Hoy,

:56:35. > :56:44.equal to so Steve Redgrave, five gold medals. He has a silver, six.

:56:44. > :56:50.You could get another one and you could be equal to Bradley Wiggins!

:56:50. > :56:54.He could be Sir, in a few months' time. Look at this, it isn't on up

:56:54. > :57:04.and a privilege to sit here in this fellow drome. You could cut the

:57:04. > :57:07.atmosphere with a knife and form. - - with a knife and fork. What a

:57:07. > :57:11.responsibility for Philip Hindes. He delivered everything he needed

:57:11. > :57:16.to. Sir Chris Hoy knows what this feels like. He can enjoy this

:57:16. > :57:22.experience. Young Philip Hindes has never been here before. He looks

:57:22. > :57:27.shocked at the moment. He has not sure what to do. To deliver that

:57:27. > :57:31.performance, to know it is down to you. The team behind you is lined

:57:31. > :57:36.up but you have to put them into the race at the right speed and he

:57:36. > :57:40.did it. All that hard work has paid off and Great Britain have won the

:57:40. > :57:50.gold medal here, successfully defending the We Shall Overcome

:57:50. > :57:57.

:57:57. > :58:02.break won four years ago in Beijing. France and Gregory Bauge, but like

:58:02. > :58:07.four years ago, Team GB pick up the medal. These are the scenes the

:58:07. > :58:12.people of this country were dreaming about. Sir Chris Hoy, the

:58:12. > :58:18.greatest Olympian, and winning goal. Jamie, you picked up the gold four

:58:18. > :58:25.years ago. How do you feel? I want to cry, it is awesome. Feel free to

:58:25. > :58:30.cry. Unbelievable. I am so happy, speechless. It is worth remembering

:58:30. > :58:37.this man is the elder statesman of the team. Young Philip Hindes, 19

:58:37. > :58:43.years old, kept his head and delivered the gold. It is

:58:43. > :58:47.incredible to see, every lap got faster. To hear the noise from the

:58:47. > :58:52.crowd and see Sir Chris Hoy going round, beautiful. I would not be
