:00:31. > :00:37.Hello, welcome to an afternoon of gymnastics from the North Greenwich
:00:37. > :00:42.Arena. We have had a couple of days off, but today is about the
:00:42. > :00:46.individual apparatus finals. Behind me, we have got the floor and the
:00:46. > :00:51.men's pommel horse and the women's fault. It is all about the
:00:51. > :00:57.specialists. Louis Smith has been all over the news. Can he do what
:00:57. > :01:01.seems to be the impossible? No British gymnast has ever across any
:01:01. > :01:05.of the gymnastic events got a gold medal at the Olympic Games,
:01:05. > :01:13.including artistic gymnastics, trampoline, rhythmic gymnastics,
:01:13. > :01:17.all of the different events. Over the last few days, British gymnasts
:01:17. > :01:21.have done wonders for British Gymnastics, really putting it on
:01:21. > :01:31.the map, not least the men, they got the first team medal the men
:01:31. > :01:31.
:01:31. > :02:25.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 53 seconds
:02:25. > :02:35.the job! Look at the reaction in A massive fruiting. Surely, a
:02:35. > :02:59.
:02:59. > :03:06.massive score. A very solid from Daniel Purvis. Printed on home,
:03:07. > :03:16.young man. This is down to you. That is just what was needed!
:03:17. > :03:22.
:03:22. > :03:27.It was just the most unbelievable competition to witness, and to have
:03:27. > :03:32.the privilege of commentating on. There is the strangest atmosphere,
:03:32. > :03:36.everybody is hoping that that bronze-medal can help Louis Smith
:03:36. > :03:45.to was the Olympic Cauldon. It is an emotional time for everybody
:03:45. > :03:49.involved, not least his mother. This could shape up to be the
:03:49. > :03:55.biggest day in Louis Smith's life, he is bound to be feeling the
:03:55. > :04:00.nerves. That is your little boy, he could make history today. At the
:04:00. > :04:04.moment, I am feeling really good. But in a little while, I will be
:04:04. > :04:09.really nervous, when I see him in there and it is nearly his turn to
:04:09. > :04:14.get on the pommel horse, I will be feeling it. How are you during his
:04:14. > :04:19.routine? I am really nervous, I feel sorry for the person sitting
:04:19. > :04:25.next to me, because my legs and hands are going! It was really
:04:25. > :04:34.scary. I will be really scared. Does he realise how massive this
:04:34. > :04:40.is? Yes. But I think he probably will not be thinking about that, he
:04:40. > :04:42.will be thinking about going out and doing what he is trained to do.
:04:43. > :04:49.He has dreamed about being an Olympic champion ever since he was
:04:49. > :04:52.a little boy. Have you treat about it? Yes. I have seen how hard he
:04:52. > :05:02.has worked and the effort he has put in and the sacrifices he has
:05:02. > :05:04.
:05:04. > :05:09.made. I just really wanted for him, so badly. He deserves it. I will
:05:09. > :05:15.love him if anything goes wrong still the same. He is a lovely boy.
:05:15. > :05:19.But he has worked really hard for this. I really hope he gets it.
:05:20. > :05:23.Fingers crossed dreams come true by the end of the day. You will do him
:05:23. > :05:31.proud, because he is very particular about how are you appear
:05:31. > :05:37.on camera. He does not like to see me shiny, because of HDTV!
:05:37. > :05:43.How is he feeling? I saw him this morning, he is feeling good, a
:05:43. > :05:47.relaxed. He is looking forward to it. Last Monday took a bit of the
:05:47. > :05:53.pressure off, he has been working for this for four years, so he will
:05:53. > :05:58.be nervous, but he will enjoy the experience. How is life with that
:05:58. > :06:04.Olympic bronze medal? It is so hard to believe. Every night, you think
:06:04. > :06:09.about that moment when it came up on the scoreboard. It is fantastic,
:06:09. > :06:13.there is such a buzz around the team. There are quite a few options
:06:13. > :06:20.for Le Reece Smith, depending what happens with the other competitors.
:06:20. > :06:26.They will have a look. Talk us through the different options.
:06:26. > :06:32.starts his routine with a handstand. Then, he goes straight into the
:06:32. > :06:39.other handstands. That is quite a difficult part. Then, a flop
:06:39. > :06:44.sequence, he has been doing this for 10 years. It is quite hard up.
:06:44. > :06:50.It is very hard when you are nervous to keep your legs together.
:06:50. > :06:54.Then, the spindle. This is where he split his legs in Beijing, but it
:06:54. > :06:59.has been solid in the last few years. Hopefully, that will not be
:06:59. > :07:07.a problem today. He has been given the Troubles since he was 10 years
:07:07. > :07:12.old. Finishing off with the dismount. He is in eighth position,
:07:12. > :07:18.which is really good, in a final. You can see what work he is going
:07:18. > :07:22.to do, and make a decision on what routine he is going to do. Produce
:07:22. > :07:28.surprised to see him in that emotional state of mind, with all
:07:28. > :07:33.of his tears, and how it affected him? A little bit. One minute, we
:07:33. > :07:37.were happy, the next minute, he burst into tears, but it is the
:07:37. > :07:45.emotion over the years, thereby so much pressure on him. Fair play to
:07:45. > :07:49.him. So much respect to the guy. It is unexpected that he cried, but it
:07:49. > :07:53.shows BOP this means to him. would have helped him if the final
:07:53. > :07:57.was closer to the qualification, because you do not want the
:07:57. > :08:02.thoughts to dawn on you. You want to stay relaxed. He listens to
:08:02. > :08:08.reggae to keep calm! As we were getting ready, his music was
:08:08. > :08:13.blasting. The whole of our apartment was shaking. He likes to
:08:13. > :08:18.keep relaxed, that is his normal routine. At the end of the day, it
:08:18. > :08:24.is just another routine. The situation is on an incredible scale,
:08:24. > :08:27.there is pressure on, but he has done this so many times, if he can
:08:27. > :08:32.keep focused and treated as another routine, hopefully he will go
:08:32. > :08:39.through. We will talk more as the final get closer, but first, it is
:08:39. > :08:46.the men's floor. Daniel Purvis, very well qualified to talk about
:08:46. > :08:50.this. It is interesting how you can use the area. There are two schools,
:08:50. > :09:00.the execution and the difficulty, and you can build the difficulty in
:09:00. > :09:03.
:09:03. > :09:06.two ways. Denis Ablyazin uses a different technique from Kai Zou.
:09:06. > :09:14.Look at the power that Denis Ablyazin can put in. How difficult
:09:14. > :09:21.is it to contain all of that power within that Square? Like you saw
:09:21. > :09:26.them, he is pretty special, he can do seven tumbles in a routine. It
:09:26. > :09:31.is amazing. It is going to be a really good final, a lot of good
:09:31. > :09:38.gymnasts. It is worth a mention that Kristian Thomas was the second
:09:38. > :09:42.reserve. He did a great routine in qualifying. His routine again in
:09:42. > :09:48.the team final was incredible, and he got better in the all-arounder.
:09:48. > :09:54.We have had great for workers. Right across the board, British
:09:54. > :09:59.Gymnastics is on a high. What do you put it down to? How are you
:09:59. > :10:03.competing at this level? It is a combination of a lot of things. We
:10:03. > :10:08.have got the right set-up, the coaching is amazing. We have been
:10:08. > :10:15.training together since... I have known them since I was eight years
:10:15. > :10:21.old. We are almost like family. We meet once or twice a month, so we
:10:21. > :10:24.are 18. The whole system, the medical system, the whole of
:10:24. > :10:30.British Gymnastics has improved over the last few years, and that
:10:30. > :10:40.has shown. We are just going down the line-up. Co height Roger Moore
:10:40. > :10:42.
:10:42. > :10:47.Road, Kai Zou, Denis Ablyazin. This is Flavius Koczi. He is the third
:10:47. > :10:55.highest qualifier. What about the next lap, Alexander Shatilov. He is
:10:55. > :11:01.enormous. I have competed against him, his consistency is amazing.
:11:01. > :11:06.Spectacular. He is a bit taller, he looks more graceful. He has a
:11:06. > :11:12.really good chance. Jacob Dalton and Marcel Nguyen. The seventh
:11:12. > :11:17.highest qualifier. Tomas Gonzalez- Sepulveda is worth a mention. A
:11:17. > :11:24.high skill level to get to this Olympic final. We are in for a
:11:24. > :11:29.treat. Cowhide Roger Moore has not looked as polished as normal.
:11:29. > :11:34.not his normal consistency, I do not know if it is because of the
:11:34. > :11:38.Olympic Games. He turned it on for the all-around final. But at the
:11:38. > :11:46.same time, I am sure he will perform today. We can hand to the
:11:46. > :11:52.commentary box. I will hot-footed there. We will be there for the
:11:52. > :12:02.first gymnast, the Japanese. The three-times world champion. He is
:12:02. > :12:15.
:12:15. > :12:20.the current world champion on the off. Who better? Hatred poor all-
:12:20. > :12:25.around world champion, the veining floor champion. -- triple world
:12:25. > :12:33.champion. He finished fifth place in Beijing, he will want to do
:12:33. > :12:43.better here. He has some tremendous work. No warm-up, they come
:12:43. > :12:43.
:12:43. > :12:51.straight out and perform. Will he do a big scale? Very nice, 3 1/2,
:12:51. > :13:01.into a half twist. It is an awful long way round. A great start. Two
:13:01. > :13:03.
:13:03. > :13:09.and a half twists. He is going well. There is a snap that was not there
:13:09. > :13:19.earlier in the week, he has found something special. Twisting his way
:13:19. > :13:20.
:13:20. > :13:30.to a very good routine. The triple Russian. They are very fond of
:13:30. > :13:37.
:13:37. > :13:45.that has not been there so far. One and a half twists. So far, he is
:13:45. > :13:53.very much in control. A triple twist, which is absolutely nailed.
:13:53. > :13:57.A fantastic start. He is back on song. He looks a bit calmer.
:13:57. > :14:00.Perhaps the weight of the gold was on his shoulders in the all-
:14:00. > :14:05.arounder. You would not have expected, the world champion,
:14:05. > :14:10.unbeaten since the last Olympics, it was considered he would stroll
:14:10. > :14:17.through this, but you are right, he looks like his confidence has come
:14:17. > :14:22.back, something that was lacking in the first couple of competitions.
:14:22. > :14:26.commission and performance. The twisting was immaculate. He has got
:14:26. > :14:33.more stuff in the locker as well. This was a very strong bid for a
:14:33. > :14:38.medal. It is interesting, at the World Championships at the end of
:14:38. > :14:43.2011, we saw him giving a multiple somersaults with multiple twists, a
:14:43. > :14:48.double straight with double twist, but here, he has not used any more
:14:48. > :14:54.to pull somersaults, he has built this routine about twisting, and
:14:54. > :15:03.what a fabulous triple twist to finish. This will be the benchmark,
:15:03. > :15:13.it will be a tough Scot to beat. He was the second-highest Wall of Fire.
:15:13. > :15:34.
:15:34. > :15:44.-- second highest qualifier. That beat him, it is this one. He scored
:15:44. > :15:59.
:15:59. > :16:09.15.833 in qualification. A double really is sticking his feet to that
:16:09. > :16:39.
:16:39. > :16:43.carpet. He just rockets round. He beautiful technique. Fantastic!
:16:43. > :16:50.Double twisting, double tuck to finish. He has risen to the
:16:50. > :16:56.challenge. I think he has got more difficulty as well. This will be
:16:56. > :17:02.very interesting. It will be close. And he is such a sparky little
:17:02. > :17:07.character. China won the team, but they did not have a gymnast qualify
:17:07. > :17:13.for the all-around. They have had eight he medal, but they have not
:17:13. > :17:20.had any individual medals. He was rocking on his heels a little bit,
:17:20. > :17:27.but he disguised it very nicely. What sets this routine apart is he
:17:27. > :17:34.shows a difference of more than one type of skill. He twists, but he
:17:34. > :17:44.also does very difficult multiple somersaults. That for me makes it a
:17:44. > :17:51.
:17:51. > :18:01.more interesting routine Dan Kohei Uchimura's. In my book he is the
:18:01. > :18:05.
:18:05. > :18:15.better floor worker on this day. is a huge score. They agreed with
:18:15. > :18:31.
:18:31. > :18:41.us. They gave him those extra as Kai Zou, two point nine. He is
:18:41. > :18:51.
:18:51. > :19:01.incredibly explicit. That big step forward will be very costly. That
:19:01. > :19:28.
:19:28. > :19:38.was fantastic. He is so dynamic as is right up there. Massive work and
:19:38. > :19:38.
:19:38. > :19:45.he keeps it going. He is working so fast and he crams another tumble in.
:19:45. > :19:52.He is a really exciting gymnast, I enjoy his work a lot. It is
:19:52. > :19:57.remarkably entertaining to watch. They are a very different styles.
:19:57. > :20:02.In terms of energy it was unbelievable how much he got into
:20:02. > :20:12.that routine with some superb work. It is more exciting than the other
:20:12. > :20:22.two, because he packs so much in, but it was not as accurate. That is
:20:22. > :20:26.the interesting thing of why this new scoring came in. People wanted
:20:26. > :20:35.this to be given more value and that is why you are seeing scores
:20:35. > :20:44.out of 16. He has gone for difficulty and it was exciting.
:20:45. > :20:51.is exciting, but the judging system did that more than a towards. The
:20:51. > :21:01.deduction for a step out ways the points for difficulty. I do not
:21:01. > :21:08.
:21:08. > :21:18.know where he has got that energy from. He is a very exciting gymnast.
:21:18. > :21:19.
:21:19. > :21:29.Down on execution. When it is tied, it goes on execution. But he went
:21:29. > :21:39.
:21:39. > :21:44.for broke. Flavius Koczi is a good twister. Another big twisting
:21:44. > :21:54.tumble, but it is crucial to break out of the twist at the right
:21:54. > :21:58.
:21:58. > :22:08.moment. Shows good balance on the fingers. Lovely extension through
:22:08. > :22:23.
:22:23. > :22:33.front with a half turn. They wrap these twists in so early. That gave
:22:33. > :22:34.
:22:34. > :22:40.himself a bit of a breather. Eight triple twist and he does it so
:22:40. > :22:46.easily. That is so full of complex twisting and tumbling, but no
:22:46. > :22:54.multiple somersaults, and that shows a slight lack of versatility.
:22:54. > :23:04.He is a twisting genius. He will be on the bald a little bit later, but
:23:04. > :23:05.
:23:05. > :23:15.not here today. -- vault. Again, not as accurate, but he loves to
:23:15. > :23:21.
:23:21. > :23:24.twist. He really went for that. Look at the effort, keep your head
:23:24. > :23:34.spinning and hope that your shoulders and hips follow and on
:23:34. > :23:41.
:23:41. > :23:51.this occasion they did. difficulty was 6.7 and his routine
:23:51. > :23:58.
:23:58. > :24:08.will be marked out of 16.7. And he scores 15.1. That puts him into 4th.
:24:08. > :24:10.
:24:10. > :24:18.Quite low on execution. The 5th gymnast is from Israel, Alexander
:24:18. > :24:25.Shatilov, 25 years old. The first Israeli gymnast ever to make the
:24:25. > :24:35.Olympics. And look at the way he handles this. Beautifully done at
:24:35. > :24:51.
:24:51. > :25:01.harp twists out. He is a poor man and he relies on twisting. -- tall
:25:01. > :25:29.
:25:30. > :25:37.That was complex. A full twist in the double. A full twist doubled to
:25:37. > :25:44.finish. What do we think? What a story it could be. He needs over
:25:44. > :25:53.15.8 to get into that top three. And it is a pretty exclusive club.
:25:53. > :25:57.A really wonderful group of routines. A different technique.
:25:57. > :26:03.That was into a double pike with two twists in, a different
:26:03. > :26:10.technique to many of the other gymnasts, but he is much taller and
:26:10. > :26:14.he has to adapt the gymnastics to suit him. But he had one deduction.
:26:15. > :26:24.The judges like to see the front of the Test up on the landing and see
:26:25. > :26:25.
:26:25. > :26:31.the front of the leotard and see the emblem on the leotard. There
:26:31. > :26:41.was another landing that was low as he came in. He showed the effort in
:26:41. > :26:45.making those rotations. A really big effort for a big man. He had a
:26:45. > :26:49.bronze at the World Championships on the floor last year. He is
:26:49. > :26:59.certainly capable. It is just the difficulty of the gymnasts that
:26:59. > :27:09.
:27:09. > :27:19.went before it was so high. That is quite remarkable. There is the
:27:19. > :27:26.
:27:26. > :27:34.leader. Three gymnasts to go. This lad can entertain on floor, Jacob
:27:34. > :27:38.Dalton. He is the USA floor champion. He got into the final at
:27:38. > :27:43.the world championships last year. USA were very disappointed with
:27:43. > :27:53.their performance in the team final. He will be desperate to get some
:27:53. > :28:00.
:28:00. > :28:10.medals here. I loved that tumble. He has got very nice lines. And he
:28:10. > :28:14.
:28:14. > :28:19.holds his body beautifully straight. He just did not absorb that landing.
:28:19. > :28:29.After all that explosive work he has to calm himself down. A
:28:29. > :28:40.
:28:40. > :28:50.beautiful extension right through twisting front. He had no landing
:28:50. > :28:51.
:28:51. > :28:57.penalties. A triple twist, a beautiful landing. That was a
:28:57. > :29:05.really excellent floor routine. Lots of variety and control, but
:29:05. > :29:15.there was one step in it that will be costly. To get into the top
:29:15. > :29:19.
:29:19. > :29:29.three for a bronze you need 15.8. fabulous floor worker. The half
:29:29. > :29:30.
:29:30. > :29:35.turn is very difficult to do. On that occasion he bounced back, but
:29:35. > :29:43.stayed in control, very good awareness. That will be expensive
:29:43. > :29:48.at this level. One of the nicest techniques we have seen on the
:29:48. > :29:56.triple. A lot of them wrap it in very early, which makes it
:29:56. > :30:03.efficient, but very scrappy. this one had so much time. That was
:30:03. > :30:11.one of the best triples I have seen in this competition. He qualified
:30:11. > :30:21.with the fourth-highest score. This is a good floor final. Exciting
:30:21. > :30:31.
:30:31. > :30:41.unbelievable. Denis Ablyazin, 20 years or, what does the future hold
:30:41. > :30:43.
:30:43. > :30:53.for him? He is also in giving us final as well as the fault. We have
:30:53. > :30:59.
:30:59. > :31:05.had two scores the St out of the four. Marcel Nguyen. This is a
:31:05. > :31:09.first for him, I have never seen him in a major flaw final. He got
:31:09. > :31:19.the all round silver. This is the first time for him in a major flaw
:31:19. > :31:19.
:31:19. > :31:28.final. He has to settle there. The pace is the difference at this
:31:28. > :31:38.higher level of competition. But he is a super gymnast, all round is
:31:38. > :31:38.
:31:38. > :31:48.his forte and the parallel bars, but he is making a good show of it.
:31:48. > :32:17.
:32:17. > :32:27.beautiful style. He is of fairly was on his feet, but he took a step
:32:27. > :32:28.
:32:28. > :32:31.forward on the disband. But he gave it the best shot. It is so
:32:31. > :32:36.difficult when you see the deduction come, you know they will
:32:36. > :32:46.not threaten the top three. It will be difficult for anybody to catch
:32:46. > :32:52.Kai Zou. Marcel and when is one of the few gymnasts that has done the
:32:52. > :32:57.qualification, the team final, the individual all-around. This is his
:32:57. > :33:02.fourth competition of this championships. In the individual or
:33:02. > :33:07.a round, he excelled to take a medal. He looked weary today. Some
:33:07. > :33:14.of these gymnasts only competed in qualification. They did their
:33:14. > :33:23.qualifying and they have had a rest, and this is their first, or second
:33:23. > :33:28.appearance. This looked tired. double twist at the start. You can
:33:28. > :33:32.forgive him, but he was a little bit jaded. He has had a fabulous
:33:32. > :33:42.championships. The German team have been a bit up-and-down, but he has
:33:42. > :33:44.
:33:44. > :33:51.held them together. He has emerged from the German team as their most
:33:51. > :33:57.consistent, sparkling performance. Kohei Uchimura is smiling, the
:33:57. > :34:05.relaxation is there. Kohei Uchimura and the qualified for one final,
:34:05. > :34:11.that is the problem if you do not work well. But others belted in on
:34:11. > :34:21.the first day and they have made a couple of finals. His coach, he
:34:21. > :34:34.
:34:34. > :34:43.should have been world champion in third place is because of the
:34:43. > :34:52.difference in executions call between him and Kohei Uchimura.
:34:52. > :34:58.Tomas Gonzalez-Sepulveda. He has made the world for final twice. He
:34:58. > :35:08.is a powerful lad. A real superstar. They look anxiously, they know that
:35:08. > :35:14.
:35:14. > :35:22.he could upset the standings. Snooze. -- smooth. Everything looks
:35:22. > :35:31.easy, great precision. He is showing us how supple and strong he
:35:31. > :35:41.is. How much control. Neatly choreographed, not too long in the
:35:41. > :35:46.corners. Very nice. He did not get the feeling of the floor hitting
:35:46. > :35:54.him that time. Not quite so wonderful on the next one, but not
:35:54. > :36:02.a big deduction. He has kept moving throughout the exercise. This is
:36:02. > :36:08.very important. A triple twist, he held back a bit. He did not get all
:36:08. > :36:13.the way around? There will be a bit of a deduction, which is a great
:36:13. > :36:19.shame. What a story for Kai Zou, he came here to retain his title, and
:36:19. > :36:23.he has done it. He has. But Tomas Gonzalez-Sepulveda is a good
:36:23. > :36:30.gymnast, and it took that final tumble to put him out of contention.
:36:30. > :36:35.He was looking so good. He had a skip to the side earlier on. Won
:36:35. > :36:40.eight of a twist lacking. That gave the judges' room for another
:36:40. > :36:49.reduction. Tomas Gonzalez-Sepulveda will not break in if the two judges
:36:49. > :36:56.do their job. But he is so impressive on the floor. Strong, he
:36:56. > :37:00.pulls hard from the flick. Double twisting, a good opener. A tiny
:37:00. > :37:04.shuffle of the feet, but he was pretty good all the way through. He
:37:04. > :37:12.would have put your money on him breaking into the medals. But he
:37:12. > :37:17.did not come around. The left leg stop at the twist being completed.
:37:18. > :37:22.A strange selection of skills, he is so naturally able to tumble the
:37:22. > :37:31.vocational skills, I would have expected him to finish with a
:37:31. > :37:38.double somersault. The judges are not feeling it is as cut and dried
:37:38. > :37:47.as all that. A great moment for a gymnast from Chile to be here,
:37:47. > :37:57.fighting it out. The gymnasts are anxiously looking on. Nobody is
:37:57. > :37:58.
:37:58. > :38:03.sure until they see it in writing. Tomas Gonzalez-Sepulveda with a 6.5
:38:03. > :38:09.difficulty, he is just outside the medals. Again, the Olympic champion,
:38:09. > :38:14.Kai Zou. A tremendous performance, and he pulled out something special
:38:14. > :38:18.today. It is quite a feat to be a double Olympic champion in
:38:18. > :38:28.gymnastics on the same piece of apparatus. Four years is a long
:38:28. > :38:32.time. Absolutely. He was the baby on the team back in Beijing. Kohei
:38:32. > :38:38.Uchimura gets a silver medal to go with his silver medal in the team
:38:38. > :38:43.competition. It is good to see him back on song. But I love this guy,
:38:43. > :38:49.Denis Ablyazin. Give him a gold medal for energy. Indeed. He looks
:38:49. > :38:55.delighted with a bronze medal. He was 0.4 down on that routine in
:38:55. > :39:02.qualification. He has pulled it out of the back. Russia's first medal
:39:02. > :39:06.in the men's gymnastics. They fell away in the team competition. They
:39:06. > :39:11.did not pose a strong thread in the individual or the round. It is
:39:11. > :39:18.their first medal, and very significant. That was a great final.
:39:18. > :39:22.It was. That is the first of the three finals. Great Britain's Louis
:39:22. > :39:28.Smith will be out here very shortly on the pommel horse. It makes us
:39:28. > :39:37.all feel nervous! All of these gymnasts have come out, it is just
:39:37. > :39:42.one piece of apparatus, and all eyes are on them. There is a lot of
:39:42. > :39:45.gymnastics going on beforehand, and you do not feel so exposed. It is
:39:45. > :39:49.unbelievable, how well the gymnasts are performing. This is the
:39:49. > :39:54.showcase, these are the guys that come through as the specialists,
:39:54. > :39:58.but a lot of them are all-arounders. When you come into this arena, you
:39:58. > :40:04.want to show off in the best possible way. They did that. That
:40:04. > :40:10.was a great final. It is heaving in here. From the bottom, all the way
:40:10. > :40:16.to the rafters. There are the three medallists, Kohei Uchimura takes
:40:16. > :40:20.the silver medal. That is a great reaction from Denis Ablyazin, he is
:40:20. > :40:28.delighted, and he is part of the new wave of Russians, more relaxed
:40:28. > :40:33.and friendly. Kai Zou has done it again. Everybody love in this arena.
:40:33. > :40:37.Having chatted to a few people who have come to watch for the first
:40:37. > :40:42.time, one of the things they have said, there is so much current one,
:40:42. > :40:50.you do not know where to watch. They will enjoy this one piece at a
:40:50. > :41:00.time, because they can focus their whole attention on it. Kai Zou
:41:00. > :41:01.
:41:01. > :41:10.retains his Olympic title on the floor. He looks a lot more relaxed,
:41:10. > :41:15.Kohei Uchimura. Absolutely. Three consecutive world titles, you are
:41:15. > :41:19.entitled to be relaxed! It was amazing, how effective he was by
:41:19. > :41:26.the pressure. You would not have expected it. He comes over as they
:41:26. > :41:31.called Guy, nothing ruffles him, and he had been so dominant, it had
:41:31. > :41:40.not looked as though anybody was close to him, but there was a big
:41:40. > :41:43.burden to carry. The point on how much it Denis Ablyazin is
:41:43. > :41:53.celebrating, it is a different style of gymnastics. Yes, it is
:41:53. > :42:15.
:42:15. > :42:19.another look at the spinning genius that is Kai Zou. There he goes.
:42:19. > :42:28.Phenomenal awareness. He pulled something extra out today. A super
:42:28. > :42:37.landing. The very difficult skills. He rotates really well. Two-and-a-
:42:37. > :42:45.half twists, easily done. He has found something as well. They all
:42:45. > :42:51.did today. In qualification, it seems like a long time ago, we were
:42:51. > :43:01.really disappointed by the Chinese, it did not seem to be there. And
:43:01. > :43:01.
:43:01. > :43:06.suddenly, in the finals, band. have nobody in the order round, he
:43:06. > :43:15.did not even get in the top 24. It was not a convincing Chinese
:43:15. > :43:18.performance. The first date is the qualification for here. Even though
:43:18. > :43:24.they won the second competition, they had lost their opportunity for
:43:24. > :43:30.some of the finals. That is typical of China, you can read nothing.
:43:30. > :43:39.They went into the team final, and I had thought, well they even get a
:43:39. > :43:45.bronze medal? To do what they did... You can see that Kai Zou carried
:43:45. > :43:50.that on. He saved his best for when it really mattered. The Olympic
:43:50. > :43:55.champion. He will be looking to retain the title. This is the first
:43:55. > :44:00.of three finals this afternoon. The next is the women's floor. There
:44:00. > :44:10.are some real characters in this. We have got to talk about Oksana
:44:10. > :44:12.
:44:12. > :44:17.Chusovitina. Her first Olympics in 1992, she phenomenal. Here she is
:44:17. > :44:26.in 1992. Look at her there! She has not changed a bit! Different
:44:26. > :44:31.haircut! A different type of fault! Very different. I first saw her in
:44:31. > :44:37.1991, when she emerged in the world championship. It is a super style,
:44:37. > :44:44.she holds her body shape. But to still be there are over 20 years of
:44:44. > :44:47.competing, that is phenomenal. a wonderful, inspiring story. She
:44:47. > :44:52.originally competed for Uzbekistan, then moved to Germany because her
:44:52. > :45:00.son got leukaemia and she moved for the treatment, and now she is part
:45:00. > :45:10.of the Uzbekistan coaching team. is a great story. Could she get a
:45:10. > :45:10.
:45:10. > :45:20.medal? It would be Super, but there are some great falters. There are.
:45:20. > :45:22.
:45:22. > :45:27.But I do think she could, actually. Kyle Amor Rowney. This is probably
:45:27. > :45:32.the best that you have seen. -- McKayla Maroney. You can be sure
:45:32. > :45:36.that all of the coaches around the world have this on their slow-
:45:36. > :45:46.motion, analysing how she achieves it. It is unbelievable, she is so
:45:46. > :46:01.
:46:01. > :46:07.interesting thing about calling it a launch pad, now it is a metre
:46:07. > :46:11.square. And it has opened up much greater possibilities. When you
:46:11. > :46:16.used to flick on to the small Bolt, the biggest worry was that them at
:46:16. > :46:20.missing the their hands. Now it is a big platform and it is sprung as
:46:20. > :46:27.well. If you hit with the right amount of momentum in the right
:46:27. > :46:37.shape, you can launch yourself and Mckayla Maroney does. Thinking of
:46:37. > :46:42.the days with a wooden box and a springboard in the gym! This event
:46:42. > :46:48.is contested by both men and women. The only difference is the height.
:46:48. > :46:58.The women's is 10 centimetres lower. The runway length is the same for
:46:58. > :46:59.
:46:59. > :47:03.everyone. Gymnasts reach speeds of up to 20 miles an hour, hitting the
:47:03. > :47:09.springboard of just 0.1 second before the pre-flight on to the
:47:09. > :47:18.Bolt. The more somersaults, twists and turns in the second flight, the
:47:18. > :47:28.higher the possible score. There are 100 recognised mousse, but this
:47:28. > :47:30.
:47:30. > :47:40.is the most popular when gymnasts perform a back sprint entry. This
:47:40. > :47:51.
:47:51. > :48:00.No excuse, get into the gym. Get that table up to the right height.
:48:00. > :48:07.You were talking about boxes and springboards. We had something that
:48:07. > :48:12.hurt you four feet. Was it stuffed with horsehair? Yes, it was and I
:48:12. > :48:16.used to feed it regularly. We had a teacher and you were a start if you
:48:17. > :48:23.got over it and a donkey if you did not. That is what it was like in
:48:23. > :48:33.those days. If you did not, you went into the corner. What you will
:48:33. > :48:35.
:48:35. > :48:40.see is the gymnasts will do two vaults. If you go on the normal
:48:40. > :48:46.style flipping on with a backwards entry, the next one has to be a
:48:46. > :48:51.forwards entries. Difficulty is also going to be the key here. You
:48:51. > :49:01.have got difficulty and execution, but the average is taken.
:49:01. > :49:04.
:49:04. > :49:09.gymnast with the two difficult vaults will be a tan vantage.
:49:09. > :49:19.are waiting for the boys to come out to receive their medals before
:49:19. > :49:29.
:49:29. > :49:35.we can move on. Back into this packed arena as the gymnasts re-
:49:36. > :49:45.enter. Kai Zou is to receive another Olympic gold medal. He got
:49:46. > :49:46.
:49:46. > :49:51.the team gold a few days ago. I am so pleased to see Denis Ablyazin.
:49:51. > :50:01.He is in the forefront of the Russian Revolution. They have got
:50:01. > :50:02.
:50:02. > :50:06.some fantastic gymnasts. They have this groundwork now. The Russian
:50:06. > :50:11.system of producing gymnasts for years and years has been in their
:50:11. > :50:15.educational programme. Every gymnast has wonderful basic
:50:15. > :50:20.technique and they are taught correctly from the word go. When
:50:20. > :50:24.the Soviet Union broke up many of the great coaches went to the west
:50:24. > :50:29.and earned their living in other countries, but quite a lot of
:50:29. > :50:33.coaches are starting to filter back into their homeland. It always
:50:33. > :50:38.seems great to travel, but there is nowhere like home. A lot of coaches
:50:38. > :50:42.are going back to Russia and they are working with the youngsters and
:50:42. > :50:47.rebuilding. We are seeing a team that is coming back, but a team
:50:47. > :50:57.that is doing it because it is what they want in a different style to
:50:57. > :51:34.
:51:34. > :51:39.the Russian teams of old. What a The first of the three medal
:51:39. > :51:43.ceremonies this afternoon. First the men's floor, then the women's
:51:43. > :51:53.vault, and then all eyes will be focused on the pommel horse and
:51:53. > :51:54.
:51:54. > :52:02.Britain's Louis Smith. No doubt he is less into reggae at the moment.
:52:02. > :52:08.The bronze medal in the men's four final goes to Denis Ablyazin. 15.8.
:52:08. > :52:18.The same score as a gymnast who got the silver, but his executions core
:52:18. > :52:18.
:52:18. > :52:24.was slightly lower. He will be happy with that. You can say that.
:52:24. > :52:29.A word again on the different styles within the routines. The
:52:29. > :52:37.power versus the Spain. Nobody worked as hard as he did to get on
:52:37. > :52:47.that podium. But you would also say in terms of control and precision,
:52:47. > :52:47.
:52:47. > :52:55.Kohei Uchimura was the best, but he did not choose such versatility.
:52:55. > :53:01.gold in the all-around, and a silver in the men's floor final. I
:53:01. > :53:09.was reading about him before the Olympics started and he said, I do
:53:09. > :53:15.not want silver, I am sick of silver all the time. Well, he got
:53:15. > :53:20.his gold, the individual all-around, so he got his gold. But this
:53:20. > :53:25.gymnast even in slow motion looks perfect. He is probably the only
:53:25. > :53:34.one that looks perfect in slow motion. He has got that wonderful
:53:34. > :53:44.natural style. But retaining his Olympic title on the floor, from
:53:44. > :53:59.
:53:59. > :54:05.He wasn't the second gymnast up. Kohei Uchimura set the benchmark.
:54:05. > :54:10.He knew exactly what he had to do to beat him. But it was technical
:54:10. > :54:16.flaw work. The thoroughly deserved it. People something extra out. He
:54:16. > :54:26.was accurate and it is a deserted gold medal. And he is not finished
:54:26. > :54:27.
:54:27. > :54:37.yet. How do you think he will get on in the high bar final? I think
:54:37. > :54:40.
:54:40. > :54:44.he will have a silver medal. I want him to get a silver medal. There is
:54:44. > :54:50.a certain gymnast going in the final and he is trained by Mitch
:54:50. > :55:00.Fenner and he has got a very good chance of gold. Now it is the
:55:00. > :55:00.
:55:00. > :55:49.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 53 seconds
:55:49. > :55:56.Servicemen's floor final and Kai Zou takes gold. Kohei Uchimura
:55:56. > :56:03.takes silver. What a taster that was as a final. If the rest are
:56:03. > :56:06.like that, we are in for so many thrills. Let's keep everything
:56:06. > :56:13.crossed for a Louis Smith going in the poor horse final after the
:56:13. > :56:19.women's floor. Tomorrow there is a certain Beth Tweddle who will be
:56:19. > :56:24.going on the uneven bars final. It is offered to talk about medals and
:56:24. > :56:30.keeping everything cross, but you have to wonder if best had got a
:56:30. > :56:36.medal in Beijing, which he still be doing gymnastics today? What she
:56:36. > :56:41.had Dick -- dedicated the last four years of her life today is? One of
:56:41. > :56:47.the things about her is she likes gymnastics and training. She is an
:56:47. > :56:52.active, busy person. Even though she intends to retire from this
:56:52. > :56:58.type of competition at the end of the Olympics, I said to her have
:56:58. > :57:04.you had your last training session? She said, no, I cannot stop just
:57:04. > :57:09.like that, I'm going to ease down gradually. It would not surprise me
:57:09. > :57:16.to see her doing the Grand Prix because she likes the sport and it
:57:16. > :57:23.is a bit of an addiction. She loves it. Maybe she would have given up,
:57:23. > :57:33.who knows? Were her that is what she wants to do each day, come to
:57:33. > :57:38.
:57:38. > :57:44.the gym. We could talk about her for hours. Here is the girl herself.
:57:44. > :57:52.Into the full twist, that was a cracker. An absolute start on this
:57:52. > :57:57.apparatus. It is a massive relief. The past 10 weeks have been up and
:57:57. > :58:06.down and quite hard work, but I have proved I am nearly back to
:58:06. > :58:11.full fitness. As soon as I was told I had surgery, my mum dropped
:58:12. > :58:16.everything and came down with me to the operation. My boyfriend has
:58:16. > :58:20.been their 100% to help me get through, anything I needed,
:58:20. > :58:30.whatever it was, they have done everything to help me achieve my
:58:30. > :58:33.
:58:33. > :58:38.dream. Fantastic work! She is very composed and boxes things off and
:58:38. > :58:45.she knows what she has to do and she is training hard. She had a bit
:58:45. > :58:51.of a setback, but she has got over that. She works as hard as anybody.
:58:51. > :58:58.She is a pretty determined lady. parents have missed about five
:58:58. > :59:04.competitions in my career, but in a 20 year career, that is impressive.
:59:04. > :59:10.It is the missing one, an Olympic medal. Yes, it is. As she said the
:59:10. > :59:14.other day, it she does not get it, she has got three world titles and
:59:14. > :59:19.six European titles, but it is the one she wants and she does not care
:59:19. > :59:29.what colour it is. I have worked really hard on it and I have
:59:29. > :59:37.
:59:37. > :59:42.changed a lot of things and I have As long as she comes awake feeling
:59:42. > :59:51.she has done her best, that is what we will be happy with. I just want
:59:51. > :59:57.her to be happy. If I can walk away knowing I have done the best
:59:57. > :00:07.routines, obviously I would love a medal, but I do not want to walk
:00:07. > :00:07.
:00:07. > :00:14.away thinking I have not achieved and not done my best. How does that
:00:14. > :00:18.make you feel, Chris? Very nervous for her. But she has done all the
:00:18. > :00:23.hard work and she has done all the routines and she knows she can do
:00:23. > :00:29.the work. The Bar has a final will be tomorrow afternoon and I hope
:00:29. > :00:39.you can join us for that. The next individual apparatus final is the
:00:39. > :00:39.
:00:39. > :00:49.women's vault. And here they come. We have got Brittany Rogers,
:00:49. > :00:57.
:00:57. > :01:03.Elsabeth Black. Oksana Chusovitina. Sandra Izbasa. Mckayla Maroney.
:01:03. > :01:08.it has to be her, she is the one with the two most difficult vaults.
:01:08. > :01:13.She generally has the least deductions. But we have seen
:01:13. > :01:18.favourites flounder. Yesterday on the trampoline we saw the absolute
:01:18. > :01:28.favourite for the women's title make that almost elementary mistake
:01:28. > :01:28.
:01:28. > :02:21.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 53 seconds
:02:21. > :02:27.at the end. Nothing is sure until champion. The first will be
:02:27. > :02:36.Brittany Rogers. There will be two Bolts. They have to be different.
:02:36. > :02:42.In the score the two are averaged. Keep an eye on the difficulty. That
:02:42. > :02:46.is on the left hand side of the scoreboard. No warm-up. There is a
:02:46. > :02:51.warm-up to him outside with the same apparatus. They will have
:02:51. > :02:58.warmed up out there. They had an opportunity about one hour before
:02:58. > :03:05.the competition to warm up on the podium as well. But it is in cold
:03:05. > :03:15.now. Ideally you want to be one of the first. It is not very reactive,
:03:15. > :03:30.
:03:30. > :03:40.it is incredibly explosive and you competition, so brace yourself for
:03:40. > :03:51.
:03:51. > :03:59.was safely away. Big deep in the locker for the second. But that was
:03:59. > :04:09.a good opener. It is nice to have eight team-mate involved as well.
:04:09. > :04:12.
:04:12. > :04:18.Eight gymnasts have made it through to these finals. 5.8 difficulty.
:04:18. > :04:24.This was very popular for that top gymnasts at these championships.
:04:24. > :04:32.Only a few did the three-and-a-half twists. But the top gymnasts did
:04:32. > :04:42.that double twist. Just waiting for the score to come in before she can
:04:42. > :04:54.
:04:54. > :04:56.go on to her second. A little reminder to herself to keep focused.
:04:57. > :05:06.A little bit better than qualification, so she will be
:05:07. > :05:29.
:05:29. > :05:39.pleased with that. This one is get back because it seemed to hang
:05:39. > :05:44.
:05:45. > :05:51.in the air a little bit. It was very clearly done indeed. 5.8 and
:05:51. > :05:57.5.6 difficulty is not a bad repertoire. That was a half turn on
:05:57. > :06:04.and the half turned to go with it. She was a bit deep on landing, but
:06:04. > :06:10.hop to the side after she landed. She just brushed the mat with her
:06:11. > :06:14.knuckles. That is a good view of how much the Matt depresses. That
:06:14. > :06:22.is one thing that has come a long way in the last few years, the
:06:22. > :06:28.apparatus, how it absorbs their weight as they land. Her Test is
:06:28. > :06:38.over. And she will be very pleased. A tremendous achievement to make
:06:38. > :07:12.
:07:12. > :07:18.with one-and-a-half twists, and she is really explosive. She could give
:07:18. > :07:22.Mckayla Maroney a run for her money. She took part last year in the
:07:22. > :07:30.European Youth Olympics, the major competition by juniors last year
:07:30. > :07:39.and I watched her do some amazing things. She lifted out of the
:07:39. > :07:42.camera view. A bit of a deduction on the landing. She was a bit
:07:42. > :07:52.surprised, but she is really powerful and someone who will
:07:52. > :07:54.
:07:55. > :08:01.develop very much for the future. She is going for a difficulty of
:08:01. > :08:11.6.0 for the next one. Her first one was 6.3. You have to do to
:08:11. > :08:45.
:08:45. > :08:52.different ones. It is very much of and turned on. That was efficient.
:08:52. > :08:59.That is a challenge for a medal. Her first Olympics at 16. What a
:08:59. > :09:05.story that would be if she could end up on to the medal podium.
:09:05. > :09:13.went forwards and backwards and they were totally different.
:09:13. > :09:20.same good style, and legs nice and tightly together. But the same lack

:09:30. > :09:39.
:09:39. > :09:49.knees. It was interesting seeing Oksana Chusovitina's face. Yes, she

:09:54. > :10:04.knows she has got a lot to do. That is to give you a perception of

:10:16. > :10:18.
:10:18. > :10:28.Brittany Rogers of Canada. A good team is full of different gymnasts

:12:04. > :12:13.gave them the very coveted fifth place. At it tireder today, another
:12:14. > :12:30.
:12:30. > :12:36.to do another vault? I know you want to show the world you can do
:12:36. > :12:46.your best but... She is going for it. She's going to attempt a 5.2
:12:46. > :12:54.
:12:54. > :13:01.more hurt than we thought. Obviously she under rotated,
:13:01. > :13:06.there's a problem with her instep and the ligaments or tendons there.
:13:06. > :13:16.The bravery. Common sense took over from bravery at that point. Yes, no
:13:16. > :13:23.
:13:23. > :13:28.point in making an injury worse for push came to shove, do I really
:13:28. > :13:32.want to risk this? Interestingly, she didn't actually hit the board.
:13:32. > :13:35.So you would be allowed another goal. As long as you don't touch
:13:35. > :13:39.the board, they take that as a false run and you would be allowed
:13:39. > :13:48.another goal. But I don't think she is in the right mental or physical
:13:48. > :13:57.state to do another vault. It would be dangerous. Mentally, apart from
:13:57. > :14:02.physically. And there are some rather dangerous vaulters to come.
:14:02. > :14:08.Abreu, who is next, she didn't land cleanly at all. An incredible
:14:08. > :14:12.difficulty, a 7.1, but because it was such a big difficulties for,
:14:12. > :14:16.the execution didn't really matter and she got into the Bolt final. I
:14:16. > :14:20.think is going to go for the handspring double front. If she
:14:20. > :14:24.hits it it will be phenomenal. Total respect. The platform is a
:14:24. > :14:29.little lower than the men. They are quite common for the men, but to do
:14:29. > :14:33.that from a platform which is 10 centimetres lower, it might not
:14:33. > :14:39.sound the loft, but it's a huge vault. If she hates it, this place
:14:39. > :14:42.will go crackers. Mind you, we are yet to see her land this fault
:14:42. > :14:47.macro, because she landed on her back with that when at the World
:14:47. > :14:57.Championships. A thing she did landed at the first qualification,
:14:57. > :15:34.
:15:34. > :15:44.Bolts. That's OK. Just not completely focused. She can do that.
:15:44. > :15:49.
:15:49. > :15:59.Maybe she will be a bit unsettled The approach, the ram, the Contact
:15:59. > :16:26.
:16:26. > :16:31.expensive. If her feet touched first, again it's the same formula.
:16:31. > :16:41.But I think she will lose their hallmark at least. I think the FT
:16:41. > :16:57.
:16:57. > :17:04.did touch first, that was my there's no margin for error for
:17:04. > :17:10.that. It is very big for the female gymnasts off a low platform. To be
:17:11. > :17:17.honest, she's a long way off landing that. We've seen it once in
:17:17. > :17:23.how many attempts minus five or six? But it is worth the risk. If
:17:23. > :17:29.she's close enough to take that chance. When you think about it,
:17:29. > :17:35.17.1, one hallmark of 16.1. There will be deductions for being in the
:17:35. > :17:38.air. She could find herself with a 15 for that. It's very important
:17:38. > :17:48.that the judges judged it responsibly. Because you don't want
:17:48. > :18:06.
:18:06. > :18:12.to see lots of gymnasts taking that courageous. The crowd appreciate
:18:12. > :18:17.what they are seeing. Phenomenal difficulty on the first one.
:18:17. > :18:25.Control on the second. She's not too happy with herself. The score
:18:25. > :18:35.to beat his 15.016. That is an average of the two. She could be up
:18:35. > :18:36.
:18:36. > :18:46.had to work hard to get it round. You really need to push up. Her
:18:46. > :18:46.
:18:46. > :19:29.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 53 seconds
:19:29. > :19:39.You can see she's furious with the got a silver in Beijing on this
:19:39. > :19:48.
:19:48. > :19:54.Handspring, like so many gymnasts do, up into wave front somersault,
:19:54. > :19:59.kick out with one 1/2 twists. But I think there were deductions their.
:19:59. > :20:09.She was quite deep on her landing. The leader looks on and I think she
:20:09. > :20:16.
:20:16. > :20:20.forwards, chest quite down. That was quite a lot lower than Janine
:20:20. > :20:26.Berger's vault. She is a phenomenal person that has been able to keep
:20:26. > :20:36.this level of training going for so many years. Such a strong physique
:20:36. > :20:39.
:20:39. > :20:49.to be able to take those years of Yes, it has been announced, but
:20:49. > :21:12.
:21:12. > :21:21.fact that she bounced up out of which shows how much the flight she
:21:21. > :21:30.had. That is it. Her Olympic career is over. What a superstar. What a
:21:30. > :21:40.swansong, too. She certainly will go from this arena covered with
:21:40. > :21:46.
:21:46. > :21:50.hold the body straight in the air. See the power of the springboard
:21:50. > :21:55.and off the platform. A little look over the shoulder to judge whether
:21:55. > :22:05.floor was. There will be a deduction for the bounce on landing.
:22:05. > :22:10.
:22:10. > :22:20.in the air. Beautiful style. Extended, wraps it in and there is
:22:20. > :22:47.
:22:47. > :22:57.these Olympics by the Russians purely for her vaulting ability. 17
:22:57. > :23:29.
:23:29. > :23:34.She's come all this way just to She had to plonk those feet down
:23:34. > :23:44.very quickly. Did she get round? I think she did. But she lost a
:23:44. > :23:54.
:23:54. > :23:57.challenge. All of them producing this two and a half twists.
:23:57. > :24:07.Everyone knew immediately if you were to be in with a shot you have
:24:07. > :24:07.
:24:07. > :25:26.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 53 seconds
:25:26. > :25:30.She smiles now because that was a real challenge from her. She could
:25:30. > :25:40.just find herself in a medal position. But there's so much to
:25:40. > :25:51.
:25:51. > :25:57.come still. It was a lovely, light with the shoulders on, and there's
:25:57. > :26:00.the half turn off. Very much in control. She always stays a shade
:26:00. > :26:10.too long on top of the platform, but she coped with it very well
:26:10. > :26:12.
:26:12. > :26:20.indeed. That is the score that she has to beat. She is in with a
:26:20. > :26:30.chance here. CHRISTINE STILL: Delight in the
:26:30. > :26:48.
:26:48. > :26:54.the lead, she is guaranteed a medal, with two gymnasts to go. But what
:26:54. > :27:04.colour will that medal ball? Kayla Maroney looking to make history for
:27:04. > :27:07.
:27:07. > :27:12.line, but it was so much higher, so much more powerful than any other
:27:12. > :27:22.gymnast we have seen. MATT BAKER: It was incredible. Just
:27:22. > :27:24.
:27:24. > :27:33.look at her face as she walked back to the end of the runway. Well, she
:27:33. > :27:39.just hits at the optimum moment. Her style is great, legs locked
:27:39. > :27:48.together, comes out of the two-and- a-half twist, arms breaking out to
:27:48. > :27:52.steady the landing, there was no squeezing. It was great.
:27:52. > :27:59.MITCH FENNER: She allowed herself a little smile, but soon got back
:27:59. > :28:09.into focus. Now, she has got to do it again, a different vault, but
:28:09. > :28:33.
:28:33. > :28:40.with the same accuracy - we hope. Olympic gold. It is one she does
:28:40. > :28:46.less often, but usually with great precision... Oh, my word! Usually
:28:46. > :28:51.with great precision, I said. Now, she was brought here also just for
:28:51. > :28:56.this piece. It was the only piece she did in the team final. And that
:28:56. > :29:02.is a major upset. Well, she got her feet down first, so she will be
:29:02. > :29:06.given the value of the move. front somersault with full twist,
:29:06. > :29:11.it is very blind. You cannot really see the floor. You have to assume
:29:11. > :29:20.you have gone high, but she just did not hit with that same contact
:29:20. > :29:26.that she is used to. Her first vault scored very high. So she will
:29:26. > :29:30.get a whole mark from that one. but there will be some more lack of
:29:30. > :29:33.rotation, which is really what she lost. Just like we said, you can
:29:33. > :29:39.never be completely sure about anything.
:29:39. > :29:43.MATT BAKER: She cannot believe it, can she? She cannot believe it.
:29:43. > :29:50.if there was one shoe-in for this Olympics, it was this one. We have
:29:50. > :29:56.all talk about her, the greatest we have ever seen at this discipline.
:29:56. > :29:59.She is into the lead. She has gone ahead of Maria Paseka. However,
:29:59. > :30:09.there's a certain Sandra Izbasa, the European vault champion, to
:30:09. > :30:14.
:30:14. > :30:20.come. But she has scraped into the lead. Interestingly, Sandra Izbasa
:30:20. > :30:24.does the same vault. She does, and she is vastly experienced, she has
:30:24. > :30:28.seen all of this kind of stuff happening before in front of her.
:30:28. > :30:34.You can feel the tension. Is she going to make it? She does! No
:30:34. > :30:44.danger there. She bent the legs just a little bit to make sure that
:30:44. > :30:48.she could bring the landing in, but she was not going to be thrown. In
:30:48. > :30:55.the last Olympics, she was the champion on the floor, so she knows
:30:55. > :31:04.what it takes. Steely determination. She is the one gymnast here who
:31:04. > :31:09.also did the all-around competition. She hit the platform beautifully.
:31:09. > :31:15.You could see how long her heels were in to guarantee the rotation -
:31:15. > :31:24.it was lovely technique. Well, what does the future hold for Sandra
:31:25. > :31:28.Izbasa? Let's keep calm about it! She does not have the two-and-a-
:31:28. > :31:37.half twist, she will probably only do a double twist for her second
:31:38. > :31:47.vault, so it needs to be almost perfect. So, it is all on execution.
:31:48. > :32:03.
:32:03. > :32:12.Look at that, legs locked together, Good precision, good control on the
:32:12. > :32:22.landing. Big bounce back, so it was not perfect, but it was pretty good
:32:22. > :32:25.
:32:25. > :32:35.vaulting. She also has great height. She needs more than 15.016 for a
:32:35. > :32:42.
:32:42. > :32:52.it is a 16 she needs... deserves to win this, because she
:32:52. > :32:54.
:32:54. > :33:00.has had two consistent, very nice vaults. In my book, she deserves it
:33:00. > :33:04.for that consistency. This young lady, you have to feel for her,
:33:04. > :33:14.because she is the best in the world. But you have to perform on
:33:14. > :33:23.
:33:23. > :33:27.the day, don't you? Well, Sandra Izbasa is absolutely overwhelmed.
:33:27. > :33:33.That was a great performance from her. She is the Olympic vault
:33:33. > :33:40.champion. CHRISTINE STILL: Well, the biggest
:33:40. > :33:44.surprise here, everybody thought the American would win this
:33:44. > :33:54.competition, but she opened the door, and there was no-one more
:33:54. > :33:56.
:33:56. > :34:01.experienced than Sandra Izbasa to take that opportunity. You have got
:34:01. > :34:07.to feel for Kayla Maroney, and you never would have predicted that.
:34:07. > :34:17.But fair play, Sandra Izbasa, she was consistent. Fantastic for
:34:17. > :34:23.
:34:23. > :34:28.Romania as well. Go away, she says, I cannot handle this yet! But she
:34:28. > :34:33.is delighted. What a superb gymnast she is. This is a very popular gold
:34:34. > :34:38.medal. Very popular. She worked the all-round competition as well. She
:34:38. > :34:41.came fifth in that. She was not able to challenge for the medals,
:34:41. > :34:46.because she is not very strong on the bars. But she does every
:34:46. > :34:52.apparatus. And she goes into the floor final at the end of the
:34:52. > :35:01.competition as well. From delight to dejection from this young lady,
:35:01. > :35:07.who must be so disappointed. Very much so. Gymnasts from the USA have
:35:07. > :35:17.been buzzing here. This is the first sign of a crack in their
:35:17. > :35:19.
:35:19. > :35:25.tremendous confidence. I am pleased for him, too. Yes, the great
:35:25. > :35:29.architect of Romanian gymnastics. He came back to help the team, as
:35:29. > :35:36.they were really struggling after they lost to Great Britain at the
:35:36. > :35:43.Europeans. He was persuaded back in. They did find here, they got a
:35:43. > :35:53.bronze medal, but they will be absolutely thrilled with this gold.
:35:53. > :35:58.Maria Paseka did well to take the bronze medal. And spare a thought
:35:58. > :36:08.for Berger, who just missed out on a medal, finishing fourth. Yes, she
:36:08. > :36:11.
:36:11. > :36:15.led for so long. 16 years old, she had her hopes raised. Yes, that was
:36:15. > :36:25.a surprise, but a delightful surprise. Very exciting final, we
:36:25. > :36:28.had it all. We had no vaults, great vaults. Yes, that's what it is all
:36:28. > :36:35.about. You have to perform on the day, and Sandra Izbasa did exactly
:36:35. > :36:45.that. She has won this vault gold medal. And she has done so in a
:36:45. > :36:58.
:36:58. > :37:08.She is very experienced a gymnast. She has been through injury, grown
:37:08. > :37:33.
:37:33. > :37:37.up a lot, decided to come back. She certainly is. It was lovely to
:37:37. > :37:44.see her give a kiss to the crowd as she left, that's it for her Olympic
:37:44. > :37:49.career. Did you think that Sandra Izbasa could do that in the end?
:37:49. > :37:56.you saw, it was an incredible final, there was so much going on. Kayla
:37:56. > :38:00.Maroney had it in the bag, is she had landed on her feet. But Sandra
:38:00. > :38:04.Izbasa, she won on the floor in the last Olympic Games, and she has
:38:04. > :38:09.come out of retirement, almost. She has done incredibly well, and she
:38:09. > :38:13.was last up as well, so she had all the pressure on her. This is the
:38:13. > :38:18.thing with her, we have seen her specialising on different pieces of
:38:18. > :38:24.apparatus during her career. She is now injecting all of that into the
:38:24. > :38:34.vault. She came here with vast experience, and she saw the
:38:34. > :38:39.
:38:39. > :38:49.American ahead of her, and she did the job. The Americans have had
:38:49. > :38:52.
:38:52. > :38:56.some shocks. Yes, in the team final. But it does not always work out.
:38:56. > :38:59.That was the case with John Orozco as well. It has been great to have
:39:00. > :39:04.your company this afternoon. And you would not be anywhere else this
:39:04. > :39:11.afternoon, because Louis Smith is about to come out into disarray
:39:11. > :39:15.near. -- into this arena. What will he have been doing for the last
:39:15. > :39:20.hour? He probably would have been in the gym, just sampling the
:39:20. > :39:28.atmosphere, listening to music, relaxing, getting in there zone,
:39:28. > :39:31.and then doing his usual warm up for the pommel horse. He will
:39:31. > :39:35.probably go out again and have another touch before he comes back
:39:35. > :39:41.in. Because obviously, you're not allowed to do that just before your
:39:41. > :39:46.routine. His coach will be with him, telling him just to relax. He has
:39:46. > :39:50.done the hard work. He is completely ready. It is all the
:39:50. > :39:55.psychology now. It is that thing of walking up to the pommel horse and
:39:55. > :39:59.saying, this is just a pommel horse routine, it is that simple. But in
:39:59. > :40:07.this arena, it is not that easy - what does it feel like to compete
:40:07. > :40:13.out there? You think of it as another routine, but there are so
:40:13. > :40:18.many things going on. Like what? You're trying to think how you do
:40:18. > :40:24.it all the time, like in training, but when you actually do it, your
:40:24. > :40:29.body stiffens up. But Louis Smith, he has got such great focus.
:40:29. > :40:39.the word on the crowd, they did not half lift you guys - did it feel
:40:39. > :40:46.
:40:46. > :40:49.comfortable, or was it a bit The audience really act as a sixth
:40:49. > :40:55.man on the team. The whole British public have got behind us. The
:40:55. > :41:00.support we've had is really amazing. The crowd is packed today and the
:41:00. > :41:06.atmosphere is a bit tense but hopefully the guys will do their
:41:06. > :41:12.job today. Thinking back to Beijing, it was all on Luiz - can I get a
:41:12. > :41:19.medal here? How much will that team bronze have helped him
:41:19. > :41:22.psychologically? Like you said, in Beijing he was our complete hope.
:41:22. > :41:28.The bronze we got on Monday definitely would have taken the
:41:28. > :41:32.pressure of a bit. Him being part of a team and smashing two pommel
:41:32. > :41:39.teams in a row will do him the world of good going into this
:41:39. > :41:45.competition. He's done so many routines. He's been hitting it all
:41:45. > :41:50.year. It's the most amazing feeling here. The it's going to be an
:41:50. > :41:54.incredible situation and experience for everyone here. Hopefully he can
:41:54. > :41:59.keep his cool. It's worth mentioning Max. Although he
:41:59. > :42:02.qualified eighth, he didn't hit his best routine. Recently he's been
:42:02. > :42:06.doing the World Cup circuit and has been in lots of finals. Honestly, I
:42:06. > :42:10.don't think there's anyone else in the world has done as many pommel
:42:10. > :42:15.routines as him this year. He does so many. And he can up his
:42:15. > :42:21.difficulty as well. I'm not sure what he will do today. His goal was
:42:21. > :42:25.down to a 49 in qualification. He can be around the 5455 mark if he
:42:25. > :42:30.hits his routine. It's all to play for really. We will talk about them
:42:30. > :42:35.a little more. If you haven't heard of Louis Smith, here is a word from
:42:35. > :42:45.the man who is about to walk out into this arena in a matter of
:42:45. > :42:47.
:42:47. > :42:57.going to come. Then the days dwindled down and you are here.
:42:57. > :43:06.
:43:06. > :43:13.here to write a new chapter in British Olympic history. What a
:43:13. > :43:17.moment for the 19-year-old from Peterborough! What a massive honour.
:43:17. > :43:27.The London Olympic Games, it's going to be a massive competition,
:43:27. > :43:31.
:43:31. > :43:35.especially with the Team GB squad is unbelievable. Compared to
:43:35. > :43:37.four years ago, this time around you have about eight or nine people
:43:37. > :43:43.fighting for just five places. But you have to look at the positive
:43:43. > :43:48.and say, look, that's how far and deeper the British men's team goes.
:43:48. > :43:53.Very smooth. And he's worked so hard on his style.
:43:53. > :43:58.I had to prove to the coaches and selection panel even more that I
:43:58. > :44:03.have a chance to win medals. Any slip and any mistake can be used
:44:03. > :44:08.against you. I've always tried to prepare in the right way. I put in
:44:08. > :44:11.the hours of training and made sure that when I go to these
:44:11. > :44:21.competitions that macro ultimately, if I'm proving I can win medals on
:44:21. > :44:24.
:44:24. > :44:27.a world stage than I think I mentally and physically. Mentally,
:44:27. > :44:32.I know what I need to do, I know what I have to do to produce the
:44:32. > :44:36.goods. It should be easier in front of a home crowd. The advantage of
:44:36. > :44:39.enjoying the competition as opposed to being nervous. Being in a team
:44:39. > :44:46.environment, having that extra support. All these things are in my
:44:46. > :44:50.favour. I said all along it's about having the routine and not needed,
:44:50. > :44:55.and he needed and not be prepared. Depending on where right and in the
:44:55. > :45:05.final, who is in the final, I'm practising that routine in training
:45:05. > :45:06.
:45:06. > :45:13.so I will have it in my locker if I routine, and he has been practising
:45:13. > :45:18.it time after time after time. like I said before, he's done so
:45:18. > :45:22.many routines. Hopefully he can do it like he's been doing it all week.
:45:22. > :45:25.He's been calm since the team final. Emotions were running high after
:45:25. > :45:29.that but the guys have brought themselves back down to earth and
:45:29. > :45:32.have been going to the training gym every day, hitting the routines and
:45:32. > :45:35.making sure they've done enough to keep themselves ticking over for
:45:35. > :45:41.this final. Let's have a word on how we think this final is going to
:45:41. > :45:47.play out. You mentioned Max before, and this is the key. Basically, Max
:45:47. > :45:51.is going to go up there, and I think he might unsettle Berki a
:45:51. > :45:55.little. He could force Berki and the door might be open for Louis
:45:55. > :45:58.Smith. We've got to keep an eye on that possibility of a bronze for
:45:58. > :46:02.Max Whitlock, because he is in the same position that Louis Smith was
:46:02. > :46:12.in four years ago. We are now going to pause for the gold-medallist in
:46:12. > :46:21.
:46:21. > :46:26.the women's vault final. Sandra Taking gold in what turned out to
:46:26. > :46:31.be the most incredible final. We all tipped Maroney. We thought she
:46:31. > :46:40.was going to come here and take the first gold for the USA in the
:46:40. > :46:50.history of the Olympics of the vault final. But Sandra Izbasa
:46:50. > :46:50.
:46:50. > :48:49.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 53 seconds
:48:49. > :48:56.Now the only final left is the pommel horse final. We are 10
:48:56. > :49:03.minutes away. Very shortly, Louis Smith will wander out into this
:49:03. > :49:06.arena. Let's hope that he is remaining as, as possible. --
:49:06. > :49:11.remaining as calm as possible. We were making a joke about the fact
:49:11. > :49:15.he does listen to reggae, he listens to music a lot and that
:49:15. > :49:19.keeps him nice and calm. He has a blasted out before we go out to
:49:19. > :49:23.compete, and it seems to have done the trick. Hopefully it will do the
:49:23. > :49:28.same today. That keeps him relaxed and calm. It's part of his usual
:49:28. > :49:32.routine. We don't really want to change that. Even when you come to
:49:32. > :49:36.major competitions, you want to do your normal routine and get in the
:49:36. > :49:40.zone. Try and treated as much as you can do played down as much as
:49:40. > :49:43.you can as if it's just a training session. A lot of you guys had to
:49:43. > :49:48.work all round in the team because Louis Smith was simply here for his
:49:48. > :49:51.pommel horse routine. So he got to experience this arena from kind of
:49:51. > :49:57.a Spectator's point of view. How much do you think that will have
:49:57. > :50:02.helped him to soak up this atmosphere? Because Louis Smith was
:50:02. > :50:06.doing the pommel horse, he is our head cheerleader. He's our team
:50:06. > :50:10.captain, so he gets us through. He's always there shouting us.
:50:10. > :50:13.That's the role of thing we have in the changing rooms as well. Yeah,
:50:13. > :50:17.it's very difficult for him, especially if we have pommel as
:50:17. > :50:23.last operators, he's got a Wade through the whole competition
:50:23. > :50:32.before he gets to compete. He did incredibly well in qualifying and
:50:32. > :50:37.then again in the team final to come out first on pommel horse. He
:50:37. > :50:42.has so much experience now. I'm hoping he can deal with the
:50:42. > :50:46.pressure today and go out there and do his thing. It's going to be a
:50:46. > :50:51.competition of difficulty first his execution. We keep talking about
:50:51. > :50:56.this guy, Berki. He is six-time European champion. This is his
:50:56. > :51:06.routine. He is remarkable with his execution. Just look at the legs.
:51:06. > :51:14.So beautiful. Again, he looks so tall and graceful. His difficulty
:51:14. > :51:22.is superb. Louis Smith did a fantastic routine but he nipped in.
:51:22. > :51:26.His routine was a class act. It's going to be a good fighter but if
:51:26. > :51:32.Louis Smith can do it, today will be the day he beats Berki. He was
:51:32. > :51:35.looking a bit shaky, not his usual confident self. You can see the
:51:35. > :51:40.break in execution there, he's played his legs a little bit but
:51:40. > :51:43.kept the swing bowling. We are expecting, Louis Smith has two
:51:43. > :51:51.different routines. One that is slightly easier than the other,
:51:51. > :51:54.both very, very difficult. If Berki scores in and around 15.7, we are
:51:54. > :51:58.then expecting Louis Smith to go for the harder style routine.
:51:58. > :52:03.not too sure. The first qualification day and the team
:52:03. > :52:11.final he's done his 6.9. It is not easy, but it is easier routine. He
:52:11. > :52:15.has hit 158 and 59. With the advantage of going last, he can see
:52:15. > :52:19.what Berki does. And Tommasone, you got to be careful of him. We were
:52:19. > :52:24.training with him before we came out here and he's been working on a
:52:24. > :52:27.couple of upgrades. Like you said, Berki is an incredible athlete.
:52:28. > :52:33.This is the one thing he hasn't got yet so he's going to be going for
:52:33. > :52:37.that just as much as our guide is. We will have to see how it pans out.
:52:37. > :52:41.I've been talking to Louis Smith for a long time about how hard do
:52:41. > :52:44.you go and do you go for it, what do you train, do you walk in and
:52:44. > :52:50.then react to the competition as it happens? Would you rather have a
:52:50. > :52:54.set plan in your mind, woke up and do it, or react to the competition
:52:54. > :52:58.and therefore you are kind of in two minds? I'd rather have
:52:58. > :53:01.everything planned out in my head. It doesn't always work out like
:53:01. > :53:05.that. Sometimes it's a mistake does have been you have to be quick on
:53:05. > :53:10.your feet and think of how to get out of it. But normally, yes, I
:53:10. > :53:14.like to rehearse it in my head before I put forward. The same sort
:53:14. > :53:19.of thing, the same as Daniel. You want to go out and do the routines
:53:19. > :53:23.you've trained for but that's the hard thing. He has trained at 7.1
:53:23. > :53:28.and has been hitting it in training. It's going to be a difficult
:53:28. > :53:30.decision for him, but one who will make with Paul Hall. It will be a
:53:30. > :53:34.joint decision. Something they probably will have decided before
:53:34. > :53:39.they walk out into the competition arena. We will have to wait and see
:53:39. > :53:49.which one he chooses. A you can sense the atmosphere here.
:53:49. > :53:54.
:53:54. > :54:01.pommel horse is just behind us. The gymnasts are just about to enter.
:54:01. > :54:06.There's Louis Smith. How is he looking? He looks good, he looks
:54:06. > :54:14.calm. He's got his gloves on still. I think you will be keeping in the
:54:14. > :54:16.zone. He's not looking up to the crowd or anything. He'll just be
:54:16. > :54:21.keeping calm and relaxed. He's ready. As well, Max looks calm and
:54:21. > :54:31.relaxed. It is a big occasion for him, he's only 19. The guys are
:54:31. > :54:48.
:54:48. > :54:58.does have the advantage of seeing everything good gymnast go ahead of
:54:58. > :55:03.
:55:03. > :55:13.him. This is the moment that Louis high score to start with. Busnari,
:55:13. > :55:23.the oldest member of this pommel horse competition at 33. Hidvegi,
:55:23. > :55:58.
:55:58. > :56:08.Belyavskiy. And standby, ladies and gentlemen...
:56:08. > :56:09.
:56:09. > :56:14.APPLAUSE AND CHEERING there we are, the stage is set for the final of
:56:14. > :56:24.the Men's Pommel Horse. We can go back to Mitch Fenner and
:56:24. > :56:25.
:56:25. > :56:31.Christine Still. MITCH FENNER: What a final is in
:56:31. > :56:41.store here. Cyril Tommasone will kick it all off, and he is no mean
:56:41. > :56:42.
:56:42. > :56:49.athlete. There's a lot of opposition for the British athletes
:56:49. > :56:53.here, Christine. CHRISTINE STILL: Indeed there is.
:56:53. > :56:58.And as we have already seen in these Olympics, it is very
:56:58. > :57:03.unpredictable. Cyril Tommasone has been the leader of the French team
:57:03. > :57:11.in this competition. I'm sure he will lay down a very strong
:57:11. > :57:21.challenge right from the beginning. Tommasone, of course, the perfect
:57:21. > :57:21.
:57:21. > :57:31.build for this apparatus, long and lean, very elegant. Very consistent
:57:31. > :57:32.
:57:32. > :57:35.as well, he scored exactly the same in qualification and in the round.
:57:35. > :57:45.MATT BAKER: And he did get a silver in the World Championships last
:57:45. > :57:46.
:57:46. > :57:53.year, so a dangerous man. And a very talented one. Very confident
:57:53. > :57:58.handstand to open. There's the second. Now, he is really strong
:57:58. > :58:05.off the blocks here, that's a good start. Good chest position to make
:58:05. > :58:15.sure of those Russian shapes. A very consistent here, Tommasone.
:58:15. > :58:17.
:58:17. > :58:22.This is difficult, that's three straight body turns. Very clean.
:58:22. > :58:28.There's the handstand dismount. Just a little pause at the end, but
:58:28. > :58:33.it was a cracking routine until the very end. Well, it was going so
:58:33. > :58:38.incredibly well for him, and Max Whitlock will have noticed that,
:58:39. > :58:46.and will be thinking, I could have a shout for a bronze. Absolutely,
:58:46. > :58:50.Matt - is there an opening?! It was strange, it seemed to stall. Well,
:58:50. > :59:00.it was a superb start. He came fast out of the blocks and looked really
:59:00. > :59:03.
:59:03. > :59:08.good. The Russians went well, but here, there is no doubt he will be
:59:08. > :59:14.marked down for that, but just that pause at the end, maybe he is
:59:14. > :59:22.facing the way he was not predicted to be facing at the end! He will
:59:22. > :59:27.get a few tenths off for that. he might have added an extra half
:59:28. > :59:32.twist to up the difficulty! There is a tiny strip of daylight.
:59:32. > :59:40.covered it very well, actually. It was more of a hesitation than
:59:40. > :59:50.anything else. More than anything, like you say, I would say that door
:59:50. > :00:03.
:00:03. > :00:08.qualifier. And of course, new judges today. If you have got
:00:08. > :00:16.gymnasts in the final, you cannot have judges from that country.
:00:16. > :00:26.Those are the marks. That is sharp judging. That's down on what he
:00:26. > :00:27.
:00:27. > :00:36.might have expected. The only clue to the age of this man is the
:00:36. > :00:46.construction of his routine. I wonder if he has adjusted it. These
:00:46. > :00:51.
:00:51. > :01:01.days, the routine is more dominated by circles than flowers. -- flares.
:01:01. > :01:11.
:01:11. > :01:17.There is good, he is on the one do that. He will come back again.
:01:18. > :01:24.That dates him a little, but boy, it is impressive. This boy has been
:01:24. > :01:28.around a long time, and he is circling very well. Hands together,
:01:28. > :01:34.coming towards the dismount, and a slight hesitation, but the
:01:34. > :01:38.handstand is clean. Give it to him, because that was a long, hard
:01:38. > :01:43.working routine! He has seen it all, he has been around almost as long
:01:43. > :01:52.as I have! He got a silver at the European Championships eight years
:01:52. > :01:58.ago! A real crowd-pleaser as well, that routine. Yes, a routine which
:01:58. > :02:08.shows, as you say, lots of flour. It really makes the pommel horse
:02:08. > :02:09.
:02:09. > :02:19.seem quite exciting. -- flare. is not easy, but it does not seem
:02:19. > :02:19.
:02:19. > :02:23.to get the credit it deserves. It is very impressive, but it is
:02:23. > :02:31.fractionally easier to do it than it is to circle. You do not get any
:02:31. > :02:35.credit these days. But that was a great effort from Busnari.
:02:36. > :02:40.CHRISTINE STILL: super control right at the end. You could see the
:02:40. > :02:50.slight difference between him and Tommasone. He almost elevated off
:02:50. > :02:52.
:02:52. > :02:58.the apparatus. MATT BAKER: He will have to have
:02:58. > :03:04.gone better than his qualifying score. It looks like he has got it.
:03:04. > :03:14.He has! He has gone into the lead! Well, that will throw the cat among
:03:14. > :03:22.
:03:22. > :03:32.the pigeons. Hats off to him, outside of the medals at the last
:03:32. > :03:33.
:03:33. > :03:43.World Championships. MITCH FENNER: Lovely handstand. He
:03:43. > :03:44.
:03:45. > :03:49.then goes into the circles... All made in Hungary. Very nicely done.
:03:49. > :03:59.That is such a difficult skill, the Russian, the straight body swing at
:03:59. > :03:59.
:03:59. > :04:02.the end. And it was very flat coming off from that. It is going
:04:02. > :04:07.to be a long way now until the end of the routine after that. Such a
:04:07. > :04:14.disappointment. Every gymnast who has qualified for these finals is
:04:14. > :04:19.keen to show their best. This is a big disappointment for him. A nice,
:04:19. > :04:29.clean, extended swing, not over- extended, but he is very sharp.
:04:29. > :04:40.
:04:40. > :04:46.Look at him on one handle. Very And the hamster and was also very
:04:46. > :04:52.effective. What a pity. He came to grief on the very difficult Russian
:04:52. > :04:55.combination, but that was class work. So, he loses a mark for
:04:55. > :05:01.falling off, and of course he loses the value of the element that he
:05:01. > :05:07.did not complete. And we have to say, Hidvegi was a real medal
:05:07. > :05:13.chance. He was indeed. Look at this. He is travelling forward and
:05:13. > :05:19.backwards with good style, lovely hand placement. This I believe is
:05:19. > :05:29.the Russian, which came to grief. His weight was behind his hands, no
:05:29. > :05:40.
:05:40. > :05:43.way he could clear that handle. Britain's Max Whitlock. Hidvegi was
:05:43. > :05:53.one of the gymnasts that was standing in the way of a potential
:05:53. > :05:57.medal for him, as was Tommasone. But of course, he is got to hit it.
:05:57. > :06:07.Yes, and the question is, will he go higher run his difficulty then
:06:07. > :06:10.
:06:10. > :06:18.he did in qualification? He posted a six-four, but he can do a six-six.
:06:18. > :06:22.He will do a six-six, I am pretty sure about that. Of course, we saw
:06:22. > :06:30.Max Whitlock cope fantastically well with the pressure in the team
:06:30. > :06:40.final. What now? Max Whitlock is ready to go in this Men's Pommel
:06:40. > :06:46.Horse final! The door is open for a medal. Now, this is important... He
:06:46. > :06:50.has got to keep his legs tight. It is when he starts travelling the
:06:50. > :06:57.length of the apparatus that sometimes, his form goes. But this
:06:57. > :07:05.is very impressive. Spindle, excellent, good extension. Can he
:07:05. > :07:12.keep his legs tight? He has kept it tight - this is looking very good.
:07:12. > :07:17.The triple Russian has gone well! Now, then... Into the hands dance
:07:17. > :07:22.sequence... That is a beautiful routine! Max Whitlock is
:07:22. > :07:26.challenging for a medal! That was super stuff!
:07:26. > :07:32.MATT BAKER: World class performance from the 19-year-old! That was
:07:32. > :07:37.first class! But has he done enough for bronze?
:07:37. > :07:45.CHRISTINE STILL: He always handles the pressure, and more! That time,
:07:45. > :07:53.he gave something a little bit special. We were worried about his
:07:53. > :07:58.travels, but he really did well this time. This is of the work, and
:07:58. > :08:08.boy, I don't know about a bronze, but this is a real challenge for a
:08:08. > :08:18.medal, even higher than that. Well, that is going to pile the
:08:18. > :08:30.
:08:30. > :08:35.shoot up to the sky with the announcement of the score!!
:08:35. > :08:42.could not have done a better job. What a fantastic platform he has
:08:42. > :08:52.built for the rest of this competition. Kristian Thomas,
:08:52. > :09:27.
:09:27. > :09:37.beautiful leg separation. Lovely in handstand. The Under-has gone well.
:09:37. > :09:38.
:09:38. > :09:48.Picking up into the circles. Very, very clean on one handle. Nice in
:09:48. > :09:49.
:09:49. > :09:57.the Russian. This is really, really good. He came out square from that
:09:57. > :10:05.spindle. There was a criticism of him... He is keeping his style very
:10:05. > :10:08.well indeed. A small hesitation, but Krisztian Berki, you have
:10:08. > :10:18.really risen to this challenge! That was a super routine from the
:10:18. > :10:26.
:10:26. > :10:34.down the gauntlet for the man who wandered in wearing headphones at
:10:34. > :10:39.the start of that routine. He's got fabulous style. He used it, that is
:10:39. > :10:43.big strength. His big strength is his execution. On the single their
:10:43. > :10:47.quirky stands alone, but here he has brought something out in double
:10:47. > :10:53.leg as well. The Russian he kept in style, which is very difficult to
:10:53. > :10:57.do when you are a long man. Boy, he really can swing! A tiny hesitation
:10:57. > :11:07.at the top of that can stand but it will be very little deduction. Look
:11:07. > :11:07.
:11:07. > :11:12.for a mammoth score from him. Good job, Mr Berki. Always great to see
:11:12. > :11:21.these gymnasts perform on the big stage. His first opportunity in the
:11:21. > :11:29.Olympic Games. Here without a team as a specialist. Louis is going to
:11:29. > :11:39.have to be at the top of his game here. It is an enormous score. A
:11:39. > :11:48.
:11:48. > :11:58.6.9 difficulty. Berki leaves. -- truly off to Krisztian Berki for
:11:58. > :12:29.
:12:29. > :12:33.Qualified with the sixth highest the one handle. There's the spindle,
:12:33. > :12:37.but he lost a bit of rhythm on that. You can't float the legs, you've
:12:37. > :12:44.got to keep them swinging. These are the Russian that swings which
:12:44. > :12:54.are such a challenge. Now he is travelling very nicely forwards and
:12:54. > :12:57.
:12:57. > :13:05.lost rhythm and a bit of shape at the end. What a final this is
:13:05. > :13:14.proving to be. Two gymnasts to go. Valeiev ski, of Russia and Great
:13:14. > :13:24.Britain's Louis Smith. Nakonechnyi is the oldest on the Ukrainian team.
:13:24. > :13:39.
:13:39. > :13:49.the name of the game for him. That is a clear three-tenths Paul's.
:13:49. > :13:57.
:13:57. > :14:07.Max Whitlock stay in contention He's trying his best to stay as
:14:07. > :14:38.
:14:38. > :14:48.young Russians. The Russian pommel horse champion. He will try and get
:14:48. > :15:02.
:15:02. > :15:08.circle but he rescued the swing. Got to keep as flat as you can. He
:15:08. > :15:18.lost the rhythm there. That will cost him. But he is not going to
:15:18. > :15:26.
:15:26. > :15:29.part company with that horse, he's That was very good. There was a
:15:29. > :15:34.moment when I thought he was going to part company but he wasn't
:15:34. > :15:40.having any of it. It was as quick as you like and he fought his way
:15:40. > :15:44.through it, but not without deduction. Good for him because in
:15:44. > :15:54.the team final he made a bit of a mess which cost his team Dili, so
:15:54. > :15:59.
:15:59. > :16:09.he will be delighted to have put Whitlock is guaranteed a medal.
:16:09. > :16:26.
:16:26. > :16:32.won't score 15.6, I can't see it break on the dismount. I think Max
:16:32. > :16:36.can hold on to a medal position. Max was so clean, his style. He was
:16:36. > :16:46.always a tatty gymnast as a youngster, and he's improved so
:16:46. > :16:52.
:16:52. > :17:02.Britain's Louis Smith. He has watched the competition unfold in
:17:02. > :17:13.
:17:13. > :17:23.front of him. He knows exactly what guarantees Max Whitlock a medal!
:17:23. > :18:03.
:18:03. > :18:09.routine in the locker if he needed handle... Going very well. He's
:18:10. > :18:19.done the second one. There is the spindle. This is going extremely
:18:20. > :18:39.
:18:39. > :18:44.that is superb! For my money, that's where the gold medal. Yes!
:18:44. > :18:51.Louis Smith delivered under pressure. All eyes were on him.
:18:51. > :18:55.Goodness me, he didn't let anybody down there. Wow, what a fantastic
:18:55. > :19:00.performance from Louis! Whatever the result, he gave it his best and
:19:00. > :19:04.nobody can do more than that. Absolutely not. That was terrific.
:19:04. > :19:09.It's very easy for us to sit here and call that routine, but it was
:19:09. > :19:17.immense. He kept his style and kept his head. He pushed in an extra
:19:17. > :19:23.ration. He really is worthy of a high, glossy medal. We hope it is
:19:23. > :19:28.cold but it certainly should be silver. His style is so improved.
:19:28. > :19:32.Really clean, legs locked together, those feet stretched. That was the
:19:32. > :19:37.criticism of his work previously. He's put it all right. Fabulous
:19:37. > :19:44.difficulty. Look at the control on that dismount. That is the focus he
:19:44. > :19:54.has shown all the way through. We are looking at 16.066 to make the
:19:54. > :20:17.
:20:17. > :20:24.the executions call was slightly lower than Berki's, Berki will take
:20:24. > :20:29.gold. It couldn't have gone any closer. Berki did not crumble under
:20:29. > :20:35.the pressure. Louis didn't crumble either. He went out there and gave
:20:35. > :20:40.it is very best shot. Well, what can you say? You can't say anything
:20:41. > :20:44.because there's no protest to be made. You can't protest on an
:20:44. > :20:51.execution score. These two know what it is like. And what a job he
:20:51. > :21:01.has done to take a bronze medal. Well, Great Britain two and three,
:21:01. > :21:07.
:21:07. > :21:14.but there is your Olympic pommel Great Britain with a silver and
:21:14. > :21:18.bronze. But the way Berki one that gold under extreme pressure was a
:21:18. > :21:28.very great salute to him for doing that. Berki, double world champion,
:21:28. > :21:40.
:21:40. > :21:48.European champion is now the was challenge enough, and then to
:21:48. > :21:53.set a target for Louis Smith to have to go for difficulty... He
:21:53. > :22:01.lost out on form, Louis, but you have to say congratulations to
:22:01. > :22:08.Krisztian Berki, who did not buckle under pressure. What a final and
:22:08. > :22:18.what a gymnast this man is. You are worth gold. Louis, a brave attempt
:22:18. > :22:26.
:22:26. > :22:31.to match his score, but they have little breath of relief. Max weblog,
:22:31. > :22:35.he finds himself with an Olympic bronze. Louis and Max between them,
:22:35. > :22:40.what the job they have done but Great Britain. Silver and bronze in
:22:40. > :22:45.what used to be their nemesis apparatus. Now we are most
:22:45. > :22:49.consistent and probably the best team on this apparatus, well, we
:22:49. > :22:54.are this best team on this apparatus, in the world. A silver
:22:54. > :22:59.and bronze medal is just reward for their brilliance. But this man,
:23:00. > :23:05.when the pressure came he did not buckle. He is a worthy gold
:23:05. > :23:15.medallist, Krisztian Berki. European, world and now Olympic
:23:15. > :23:20.
:23:20. > :23:26.champion. Max is still smiling - he of the Hungarians, going right back,
:23:26. > :23:34.they gave us these moves that are so common now. But they gave these
:23:34. > :23:39.moves over 40 years ago. So what a final that was. Gold de Berki and
:23:39. > :23:47.silver and bronze to Great Britain in the form of Louis Smith and Max
:23:47. > :23:52.Whitlock. How does that sound, Chris, to have two Olympic
:23:52. > :24:02.medalists? We have another chance to what Matt -- Max Whitlock's
:24:02. > :24:04.
:24:04. > :24:09.so high above the handles. His style, as a junior he was quite
:24:09. > :24:17.untidy but always had great flair. This last year he has really got
:24:17. > :24:21.the quality of work along with the up to the mark. Legs are absolutely
:24:21. > :24:25.glued together. He's such a cool guy. I felt confident in the team
:24:25. > :24:29.final when he approached the floor. I think I felt the same this time.
:24:29. > :24:33.We've seen so much a one in this pommel Horse Final beforehand with
:24:33. > :24:38.Hidvegi coming up before him and Tommasone as well struggling. Max
:24:38. > :24:43.knew there was a chance. I noticed, just when he was sacked their
:24:43. > :24:48.before he went up, he gave a wry smile. He knew that he was in with
:24:48. > :24:55.a brilliant chance. My word, he took that opportunity with both
:24:55. > :24:59.hands. He got himself an Olympic bronze medal. Yes, he is the guide
:24:59. > :25:03.to do it. They brought him because he is quite inexperienced but he is
:25:03. > :25:13.the junior that has risen to the challenge and shown that he likes
:25:13. > :25:16.
:25:16. > :25:21.Krisztian Berki. He was straight into those flairs, he didn't mess
:25:21. > :25:25.about. That was unbelievable work. He really did show his class. He
:25:25. > :25:29.kept his focus. What a challenge Max Whitlock set him. He knew he
:25:29. > :25:37.had to beat Max and then set a target that Louis would really have
:25:38. > :25:44.to work to achieve. The ultimate game of poker! Absolutely! And boy,
:25:44. > :25:50.he played a very strong hand. This was unbelievable from Berki. That
:25:50. > :25:56.little Hopper as he goes round. So Kouassi. When it boils down to the
:25:56. > :26:01.execution, can you argue with the judges there? No. The work he does
:26:01. > :26:07.on his single leg work is stratospheric - no one else swings
:26:07. > :26:11.single legs like him. There were very tiny problems perhaps in the
:26:11. > :26:16.shade on the Russians but apart from that, this guide, that was a
:26:16. > :26:20.performance that was unbelievable. Louis was always going to have to
:26:20. > :26:23.react to what happened in the competition. He came with two
:26:23. > :26:33.different routines in mind. The question was always going to be
:26:33. > :26:42.
:26:42. > :26:47.which one would he do? This was the both handstands. I thought at this
:26:47. > :26:54.point that he was a little bit under pressure. He can do three
:26:54. > :27:01.Russians here. There is the first Russian, then he put the second in,
:27:01. > :27:10.which made it seven, but he left the third out. And then he quickly
:27:10. > :27:18.got into the spindle. He really did give it his very, very best effort.
:27:18. > :27:23.CHRISTINE STILL: The crunch was really that he and Berki ended up
:27:23. > :27:28.with the same difficulties Cormack. Yes, but this was the measure of
:27:28. > :27:35.his performance, total control, right at the end. To get the same
:27:35. > :27:38.score as Berki is an achievement. MATT BAKER: And what a release.
:27:38. > :27:45.When you think back, do you think he would have been feeling under
:27:45. > :27:50.more pressure here the he was in qualification? Oh, yes, he was
:27:50. > :27:54.under a huge amount of pressure. He had to come up with the goods. He
:27:54. > :27:58.has been consistent all the way through. To be fair to him, he
:27:58. > :28:02.stepped up the difficulty by a tenth. He knew what he had to do,
:28:02. > :28:10.and when you get the same score as the Olympic champion, and it comes
:28:10. > :28:16.down to style in the end, I thought that was fantastic. There is
:28:16. > :28:24.confirmation. Krisztian Berki is the Olympic pommel horse jumping.
:28:24. > :28:27.Louis Smith takes the silver, Max Whitlock the bronze. To have two
:28:27. > :28:33.gymnasts on the Olympic podium in the men's pommel horse, I mean,
:28:33. > :28:37.goodness me. You remember, Matt, from your days, how far we have
:28:37. > :28:41.come in the pommel horse. We are now the strongest team in the world
:28:41. > :28:46.on the pommel horse. We have got two medals in an Olympic Games. I
:28:46. > :28:49.cannot believe what we have seen. No, it it's fantastic. I do not
:28:49. > :28:53.think there should be any disappointment with Louis Smith
:28:53. > :28:58.with his silver. He has stepped up, he got bronze last time, this time
:28:58. > :29:03.he has got silver. He has improved enormously during this past year in
:29:03. > :29:11.style, performance, and that was a great performance, much to be
:29:11. > :29:18.celebrated. And from a difficulty point-of-view, he matched Berki, it
:29:18. > :29:24.is the hardest routine out there in the world. Well, he out did Berki
:29:24. > :29:28.on difficulty, and just lost it on style. What does that say about Max
:29:28. > :29:33.Whitlock's execution? Down on difficulty, but still in the top
:29:33. > :29:37.three. He is 19 years old, add a few more years of difficulty on top
:29:37. > :29:42.of that... Oh, yes, he is huge for the future, not only as a
:29:42. > :29:49.specialist, but all round as well. Jeremy pretty decent on every
:29:49. > :29:54.apparatus. I think he is going to be our star in four years' time.
:29:54. > :29:59.has been a key part of the British team, how well the young gymnasts
:29:59. > :30:03.have performed. We know on a European level how strong the
:30:03. > :30:09.British juniors are. The next Olympic cycle is going to be very
:30:09. > :30:14.interesting. It will be. Max Whitlock himself was junior
:30:14. > :30:20.champion in Europe on the pommel horse. The bridge between junior
:30:20. > :30:25.and senior is not a small one. And he has achieved it. He is now an
:30:25. > :30:30.Olympic medallist. Incredible. At 19 years of age. What a future he
:30:30. > :30:35.has. And we saw Louis Smith getting bronze in the last Olympics, and
:30:35. > :30:38.then suddenly Max Whitlock gets carried along with it - that's how
:30:38. > :30:42.it works. CHRISTINE STILL: Yes, it is the
:30:42. > :30:46.belief, the belief that it is not impossible to go out and to win
:30:46. > :30:51.medals. Beth Tweddle showed us first, and Louis Smith carried it
:30:51. > :30:55.on. They have been the inspirations for the next generation, and now,
:30:55. > :31:02.to be honest, the next generation expect to achieve. It is not a
:31:02. > :31:06.wonderment. In the Junior Europeans, they were first and second in the
:31:06. > :31:11.all round, and they one plenty of medals in the individuals. It could
:31:11. > :31:15.not be more emphatic than that for our juniors. Just a first-class
:31:15. > :31:21.performance. Our British lads came out here in front of such an
:31:21. > :31:31.expectant crowd, and they have just delivered superbly.
:31:31. > :31:32.
:31:32. > :31:35.ANNOUNCER: Max Whitlock! MATT BAKER: And the home crowd
:31:35. > :31:45.applauds 19-year-old Max Whitlock, who steps up to the podium to
:31:45. > :31:49.receive his Olympic bronze medal. MITCH FENNER: We thought when Louis
:31:49. > :31:54.Smith got bronze in Beijing that it was tremendous, but it has been
:31:54. > :32:03.emulated in the next Games by a younger gymnast. Fair play, that is
:32:03. > :32:13.terrific for British gymnastics. From South Essex gymnastics club,
:32:13. > :32:14.
:32:14. > :32:17.not to millions of miles away from Huntingdon, where Louis trains.
:32:17. > :32:22.unassuming young man, but now, he is among the best in the world,
:32:22. > :32:32.with his Olympic bronze medal. ANNOUNCER: For Great Britain, Louis
:32:32. > :32:42.
:32:42. > :32:52.Smith! gave his very best, matched the
:32:52. > :32:54.
:32:54. > :33:03.score of Berki, but on the countback, he just missed out.
:33:03. > :33:13.Absolutely fantastic. Louis had his coach with him from Huntingdon
:33:13. > :33:17.
:33:17. > :33:22.gymnastics club, and he has done a tremendous job. A tremendous moment.
:33:22. > :33:32.Great Britain's Louis Smith gets a silver in the Olympic pommel horse
:33:32. > :33:40.
:33:40. > :33:48.Olympic champion, Krisztian Berki! World champion, European champion
:33:48. > :33:54.and now, Olympic champion. What a career this man has had. He has
:33:54. > :33:59.been at the top of his game for so long. And it is so fitting, because
:33:59. > :34:03.it was the Hungarians who started so many things on this apparatus,
:34:03. > :34:09.they transformed it, and that was 35 years ago, when they started
:34:09. > :34:18.twisting and turning. He has taken on that legacy, and now, he is
:34:18. > :34:24.Olympic champion. This, his first Olympics, he took that opportunity,
:34:24. > :34:27.and he nailed it, absolutely nailed it. He came out here with the crowd
:34:27. > :34:32.absolutely in full voice for the British boys, and he handled it
:34:32. > :34:39.really well. And the pressure that he must have been under, to come
:34:39. > :34:49.out here in front of his home crowd, he was certainly up against it.
:34:49. > :34:49.
:34:49. > :37:07.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 53 seconds
:37:07. > :37:16.Louis Smith takes silver croc Great Britain, and Max Whitlock, the
:37:16. > :37:20.bronze. It is always difficult, you're thinking, can they get gold?
:37:20. > :37:26.But Beth Tweddle summed it up, she said, if I leave that arena and I
:37:26. > :37:30.have done my best, I will be happy. Yes, and both of these two have to
:37:30. > :37:35.be delighted. They did not leave anything behind. No, they did
:37:35. > :37:38.everything that they could. To see Mark Hunter and Zac Purchase in the
:37:38. > :37:45.ruling yesterday, they gave absolutely everything, and they got
:37:45. > :37:50.silver. And to achieve exactly the same score, to lose it on the
:37:50. > :37:55.countback in the end, but I just go back to the performance of Berki,
:37:55. > :38:00.to stay calm in this arena, to produce what he produced, I mean...
:38:00. > :38:06.And then Louis steps up and he apps his difficulty, only by a tenth,
:38:06. > :38:13.but he did it. He knew what he had to do, and Berki is a worthy, were
:38:13. > :38:19.the Olympic champion. Louis gracious in taking his silver medal,
:38:20. > :38:25.really gracious. Once again, when you see the pictures of Berki, his
:38:25. > :38:30.leg extension, it is class. When you think of the pommel horse, you
:38:30. > :38:34.want to see the circling, it was absolutely textbook, really. You
:38:34. > :38:39.will always have the arguments about the execution versus the
:38:39. > :38:43.difficulty, but it has done a lot for British gymnastics. How would
:38:43. > :38:47.you describe our style of gymnastics, in Britain? It is
:38:47. > :38:50.immense. The standard for the future is guaranteed now. There
:38:50. > :38:56.will be hundreds of juniors coming through. A few of them will cross
:38:56. > :39:01.the bridge into senior level. They have now got a legacy to live up to.
:39:01. > :39:06.Smith and the team, the team bronze medal, and then to take two medals
:39:06. > :39:13.in this company, they have laid down a legacy for others to follow.
:39:13. > :39:23.And the future looks pretty good to me. Just the most incredible pommel
:39:23. > :39:33.horse Final. We have seen it all this afternoon. In the women's, we
:39:33. > :39:33.
