:00:30. > :00:36.Hello, welcome to the Queen's Club and the 2014 Aegon Championships, as

:00:37. > :00:41.the grasscourt tennis season gets underway. 12 months ago, Andy Murray

:00:42. > :00:45.made sure he is -- his name was written on this board for a third

:00:46. > :00:46.time. After a third title that was the foundation for even greater

:00:47. > :00:58.glory. That is just a brilliantly worked

:00:59. > :01:06.point from Murray. That was a beautiful shot.

:01:07. > :01:07.That is a tidy game. That is it, third title at Queen's

:01:08. > :01:22.Club for Andy Murray. A couple more seconds before the

:01:23. > :01:29.drama unfolds. He is a brick wall! This is

:01:30. > :01:35.magnificent. Murray has the answer for

:01:36. > :01:39.everything. Just fabulous tennis. What point. What an afternoon,

:01:40. > :01:45.history in the making. Novak Djokovic is the heat.

:01:46. > :01:48.The waiting is over. Andy Murray is the Wimbledon champion! And you

:01:49. > :01:57.simply cannot give more. And if Andy is to win his fourth

:01:58. > :02:01.Queen's Club title to match the achievements of John McEnroe, Boris

:02:02. > :02:07.Becker, waiting you it, he will have to get past a top-class field.

:02:08. > :02:11.-- Leyton Hewitt. Stan Wawrinka is the top seed. The

:02:12. > :02:16.loser in the first round at the French Open, the Swiss number one

:02:17. > :02:22.wants plenty of grasscourt practice ahead of Wimbledon so accepted a

:02:23. > :02:26.wildcard to play here. Thomas Burdick, quarterfinalist last

:02:27. > :02:29.year and the 2010 Wimbledon Romberg -- runner-up.

:02:30. > :02:32.He will be a tough opponent for anyone.

:02:33. > :02:35.Ernests Gulbis is run to the semifinals of the French Open,

:02:36. > :02:38.including beating Roger Federer, and secured himself a place in the

:02:39. > :02:43.world's top ten. Will this month be the time we get

:02:44. > :02:47.to see the fiery Latvian realise his potential on grass?

:02:48. > :02:49.Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is another without the title to match his

:02:50. > :02:54.talent. He reached the final year in 2011.

:02:55. > :02:58.Can the Frenchman make the final step up to me -- become the

:02:59. > :03:02.champion? Winner two years ago, Marin Cilic

:03:03. > :03:06.has had a tough time in the past 12 months.

:03:07. > :03:13.Banned for drugs, but now back on tour, the lanky Croat will be trying

:03:14. > :03:16.to reclaim his crown. Grigor Dimitrov certainly made an

:03:17. > :03:22.impact on and off the court last year. Now to 13 in the world, can

:03:23. > :03:24.the Bulgarian break into the world's elite?

:03:25. > :03:28.And Lleyton Hewitt is at the other end of his tennis career, but is

:03:29. > :03:32.back for another crack at this title. And after rolling back the

:03:33. > :03:37.years 12 months ago he will be looking for another impressive run

:03:38. > :03:41.this week. A glorious line-up, and glorious

:03:42. > :03:45.weather to greet the opening day of the Championships here at the

:03:46. > :03:49.Queen's Club in Barons Court, West London. Plenty for the crowd to

:03:50. > :03:52.enjoy, let's hope the weather will last.

:03:53. > :03:57.On Centre Court today, the top seeds all have a chance, but first up it

:03:58. > :04:00.is James Ward, wildcard into the Championships, up against the

:04:01. > :04:05.Slovenian GB in the third round of the French qualifying.

:04:06. > :04:08.Then 33-year-old Jurgen Melzer, making his first appearance at

:04:09. > :04:13.Queen's for six years come up against another wildcard from

:04:14. > :04:21.Britain, Dan Evans. Another 33 old, Lleyton Hewitt, the

:04:22. > :04:24.four-time champion will take on Daniel Gimeno-Traver. Then Feliciano

:04:25. > :04:30.Lopez, the 10th seed completes the line-up on Centre Court today.

:04:31. > :04:35.You can watch on the red button from 12:30pm, or you can watch with us at

:04:36. > :04:40.1pm on BBC Two. This is the start of four weeks of

:04:41. > :04:45.tennis here, Queen's, Eastbourne and Wimbledon over 200 hours of coverage

:04:46. > :04:49.across BBC television alongside BBC Radio 5 Live and the excellent BBC

:04:50. > :04:55.Sport website. I am joined by the excellent John

:04:56. > :04:58.Lloyd and Andrew Castle. The grasscourt season is underway,

:04:59. > :05:03.what a glorious start. Yes, we are getting away with it

:05:04. > :05:07.today. The weather forecast is good, I think, most of the week, scattered

:05:08. > :05:10.showers. Maybe showers today and tomorrow but

:05:11. > :05:14.then better and better. Very warm conditions for the players, but that

:05:15. > :05:18.is perfect because last year was quite rainy and very slippery, and

:05:19. > :05:23.that is not ideal. No, we had all of those slips in the

:05:24. > :05:28.first few days, a bit dangerous, to be honest, at times. Now it is

:05:29. > :05:31.perfectly dry and hot conditions. This is perfect.

:05:32. > :05:35.The best of three sets, perfect preparation week.

:05:36. > :05:40.What a great line-up, too. The line-up is great, everyone wants

:05:41. > :05:45.to see Andy Murray, he has not lost on a grasscourt since 2012.

:05:46. > :05:48.He will be up on Wednesday, Stan Wawrinka, at the top of the draw, he

:05:49. > :05:51.has a nightmarish Rosso we will see how long he is in for.

:05:52. > :05:56.The tournament itself is all about getting a couple of hours on court

:05:57. > :06:00.for the guys. -- nightmarish draw.

:06:01. > :06:04.They have so little time between here and Wimbledon, it is a two-week

:06:05. > :06:06.grasscourt season then it is the third Grand Slam of the year.

:06:07. > :06:10.Every match is important, nothing to do with prize money, this is a

:06:11. > :06:15.stand-alone and very important week in the calendar, a tournament they

:06:16. > :06:18.love playing. Plenty to look forward to this week,

:06:19. > :06:23.but what a French Open we had. The final yesterday, history made, what

:06:24. > :06:26.an incredible record Rafael Nadal has.

:06:27. > :06:31.I must say, I thought that Novak Djokovic was going to be the title

:06:32. > :06:35.taker at the beginning. Then it came to the final and you realise that

:06:36. > :06:39.best-of-3 set tournament are so different than best of five.

:06:40. > :06:43.He loses occasionally in best-of-3 tournament, but best of five on

:06:44. > :06:47.clay, you could see Novak Djokovic looking at Boris Becker and it was

:06:48. > :06:50.like, what else can I do? The physicality of him, you cannot

:06:51. > :06:55.wear them down. As soon as the temperature went up

:06:56. > :07:00.or 29 on court, you just knew the top-spin was going to take effect.

:07:01. > :07:05.It is this conditions. This guy, Novak Djokovic, beat everyone else

:07:06. > :07:09.but cannot beat Rafael Nadal. And in Grand Slam finals coming year

:07:10. > :07:15.struggled before, the fifth one he has lost?

:07:16. > :07:19.The fifth in the last six. He was already a legend, for me.

:07:20. > :07:24.Technically I think he is as sound as everyone, but that was

:07:25. > :07:28.heartbreaking, and that idiot that called out between first and second

:07:29. > :07:34.serve lest a bad taste for a few minutes. He was gentleman enough not

:07:35. > :07:37.to suggest he would lose the match because of that, but the drama, the

:07:38. > :07:40.sheer level between these two committees frightening.

:07:41. > :07:45.The fact that Andy Murray has got in and won slams, this is an amazing

:07:46. > :07:52.generation. Last summer this was Murray's

:07:53. > :07:56.service, he won the title here then ended the 77 year wait for a men's

:07:57. > :08:00.Wimbledon champion, but after that it went horribly wrong.

:08:01. > :08:05.He had back surgery and split with his coach, Ivan Lendl, and just

:08:06. > :08:10.yesterday announced he will be working with Amelie Mauresmo for at

:08:11. > :08:15.least the grasscourt season. Andy, welcome back to the Queen's

:08:16. > :08:19.Club. The site of three titles year, including last year.

:08:20. > :08:25.Yes, it is always a nice place for me to come back to. I have some

:08:26. > :08:30.great memories from here. It is perfect preparation for Wimbledon,

:08:31. > :08:33.and I have actually played some of my best tennis here, one of my most

:08:34. > :08:41.consistent tournament 's throughout my career. It is also the place

:08:42. > :08:44.where I won my first ATP match. We have been waiting for a while to

:08:45. > :08:48.find out who your coaching choice would be after parting ways with

:08:49. > :08:50.Ivan Lendl. We now know it is Amelie Mauresmo, how did that come about?

:08:51. > :08:55.Mauresmo, how did that come The last times I have looked at

:08:56. > :09:01.cultures, I spoke to Darren Cave or quite a lot. I mentioned to him

:09:02. > :09:08.quite -- that I was thinking about possibly a female coach. I did not

:09:09. > :09:15.know a lot of the females that were playing around the last ten years --

:09:16. > :09:21.ten years or so. I know Kim Clijsters, obviously, Amelie

:09:22. > :09:26.Mauresmo a bit, so I just spoke to him a little bit about those players

:09:27. > :09:31.and he thought that Amelie would be a good fit. We also came up with a

:09:32. > :09:36.few other names, as well. Yes, after I spoke to her, I just had a good

:09:37. > :09:41.feeling about it. For me it doesn't feel so different, because when I

:09:42. > :09:48.was growing up obviously I had my mum working with me. I have always

:09:49. > :09:54.had quite strong female influences in my career. I have found that,

:09:55. > :10:00.with my mum especially, that she listened extremely well, and that is

:10:01. > :10:05.something that I felt right now that I needed. I have started to listen

:10:06. > :10:09.to my body a lot more, because over the years you start to pick up some

:10:10. > :10:12.things and I think it is important that the people you worked with

:10:13. > :10:17.respect and understand that and listen to how you are feeling, as

:10:18. > :10:20.well, because you cannot just be pushed extremely hard every single

:10:21. > :10:24.day. I need to pick my moments during the year when I really go for

:10:25. > :10:32.it and train. That was one of the reasons, but for me it did not feel

:10:33. > :10:38.like a strange thing to do, just because I grew up with a female

:10:39. > :10:40.coach. What has the reaction been like at Queen's?

:10:41. > :10:43.Have you spoken to the other players at all?

:10:44. > :10:48.Yes, couple of people have come up to me and asked, because in the last

:10:49. > :10:51.few weeks there have been a lot of different... You know, a lot of

:10:52. > :10:55.different names of people, they did not know if it was true, or if it

:10:56. > :11:03.was serious, so people were asking me if it was true or not.

:11:04. > :11:06.Yes, I told them it was. But from the other players' point of view, I

:11:07. > :11:11.don't really care whether they think it is a good or bad appointment, it

:11:12. > :11:16.is whether it works well for me and my team. Hopefully it will be a good

:11:17. > :11:19.move in my career. She has obviously been a Wimbledon champion.

:11:20. > :11:22.What do you hope she will bring in the next few weeks? There are a lot

:11:23. > :11:26.of things she can bring. I would not have thought it would be

:11:27. > :11:31.incredibly full on, because we are still getting to know each other.

:11:32. > :11:35.She obviously knows what it is like to play at our home slam, being

:11:36. > :11:38.French, she has played the French Open a lot of times, and I think she

:11:39. > :11:42.was quite open that she was struggling with the pressure. I

:11:43. > :11:47.think that can also help, someone that has been through those

:11:48. > :11:50.experiences themselves. She has won Wimbledon before herself and it will

:11:51. > :11:54.be interesting. Well, you know that Wimbledon is

:11:55. > :11:58.just a few weeks away, is it pretty exciting?

:11:59. > :12:01.Yes, it is very exciting. It is a period of the year I always look

:12:02. > :12:05.forward to, and I am not just saying this, but literally all of the

:12:06. > :12:09.players when they come on the grass everyone seems to be happy. Towards

:12:10. > :12:14.the end of the clay-court season everyone seems a bit tired and down,

:12:15. > :12:18.mentally fatigued, but when you see everyone on the grass everyone is

:12:19. > :12:23.smiling, everyone is happy, the sun is out just now, and it is a great

:12:24. > :12:27.period of the year, I just wish it was a bit longer.

:12:28. > :12:31.We are all very happy to be back and happy that the sun is still shining

:12:32. > :12:36.today. An interesting choice. Murray never does anything straightforward,

:12:37. > :12:39.does he? Ivan Lendl had never coached before and it worked. He is

:12:40. > :12:43.one of those players that he would not have taken this on without

:12:44. > :12:48.looking at what she could bring. Yes, he said he talked to Darren

:12:49. > :12:57.Cave hell about it, who he has a lot of respect for. -- Cahill.

:12:58. > :13:02.It will be the mental side, that is what Ivan Lendl brought to the

:13:03. > :13:05.table. The mental side, and the mental side, Andy cutting out some

:13:06. > :13:08.of those bits on the court where he would get angry with everyone and

:13:09. > :13:12.all that stuff. I think Amelie Mauresmo has been there, she has had

:13:13. > :13:20.the experience, it makes no difference whether you are a court

:13:21. > :13:24.is coach. I am surprised there are not more women's coaches. It went

:13:25. > :13:28.all back to Bobby Riggs with the women's coach. Why not? She is a

:13:29. > :13:33.fabulous creature, you know. She has been through a lot. At the

:13:34. > :13:39.age of 19 she declared, in her own way, she said at the time it was

:13:40. > :13:43.clumsy, her sexuality, she had to deal with that with her family. She

:13:44. > :13:47.had to deal with that in France and it was a big surprise and everything

:13:48. > :13:53.else, but of course times change, it means nothing, it meant nothing then

:13:54. > :13:56.because it is who you are, but she had to deal with that. Since then

:13:57. > :14:02.she went to number one in the world and won two slams. The way she did

:14:03. > :14:07.it was with this flair and expression. She found a way to win

:14:08. > :14:12.and, for me, I think Murray has an awful lot of that in him. He finds a

:14:13. > :14:17.way to win and looks to unlock an opponent. Andy has more game than

:14:18. > :14:21.anyone playing, for me, in terms of the way he can change things around

:14:22. > :14:25.at get under people's skin. But if this is only for the grasscourt

:14:26. > :14:29.season, I hope he wins a few matches because it could be over in two

:14:30. > :14:35.weeks. It is this week, next week and then Wimbledon he is first on

:14:36. > :14:37.Centre Court. It could be the shortest coaching relationship of

:14:38. > :14:42.all time. In the grasscourt season you go,

:14:43. > :14:46.what do you want me to achieve? I won Queen's last year and Wimbledon,

:14:47. > :14:51.so basically the same? I have not lost since 2012, good

:14:52. > :14:54.luck. It is exciting, you can top about it

:14:55. > :14:58.all day long and it is typical of Andy come it is very interesting.

:14:59. > :15:02.We have heard from Andy, let's hear from Amelie and she explained how

:15:03. > :15:07.this appointment came about. Andy contacted me a few weeks ago

:15:08. > :15:14.and we started talking about this possibility to be working together.

:15:15. > :15:23.It is not really something that I was thinking of doing when I stopped

:15:24. > :15:27.being a tennis player. And then we talked again a little bit more about

:15:28. > :15:35.how to do the things, maybe, about his game, about different things,

:15:36. > :15:41.and we came up with the wolves from both sides -- with the will from

:15:42. > :15:44.both sides to give it a shot. It will be a tough start, the rumours

:15:45. > :15:47.were circling in Paris because she was spotted watching his opening

:15:48. > :15:52.match. But that match he had, the semifinal

:15:53. > :15:57.where he was destroyed by Rafael Nadal, it will be tough for him to

:15:58. > :16:01.try and pick up from that. I think they will look at the

:16:02. > :16:05.positive side. Was there one? Well, he got to the

:16:06. > :16:08.semifinals at the French Open. He had gone in there one? Well, he got

:16:09. > :16:10.to the semifinals at the French Open. He had gone in their unsure

:16:11. > :16:13.about his form, and he got demolished by the greatest player of

:16:14. > :16:16.all-time. He did not play well, apart from Rafael Nadal, he looked

:16:17. > :16:20.physically and mentally like it was just one match to many, he looked

:16:21. > :16:25.tired. I think he will be positive, the grass is coming up now got to

:16:26. > :16:28.the semifinals and has plenty of matches under his belt.

:16:29. > :16:32.We have plenty of time to talk about this this and we will revisit this

:16:33. > :16:37.subject but we will head straight out to Centre Court now, because

:16:38. > :16:43.James Ward will be coming out. He is serving to stay in this opening set

:16:44. > :16:47.against Blaz Rola of Slovenia. He beat him in three sets in the French

:16:48. > :16:51.Open qualifying, but he is in a battle here. Let's join this one and

:16:52. > :16:56.in the commentary box for this one is Peter Fleming and Andrew Cotter.

:16:57. > :17:03.Good matches so far, close match. A strange match, really, Blaz Rola

:17:04. > :17:15.looked all at sea in his opening service game. He found his feet, he

:17:16. > :17:21.found his grass paws and has looked pretty impressive. But James Ward is

:17:22. > :17:28.hanging in this set. James Waters serving, 4-5. -- James

:17:29. > :17:33.Ward. Yes, really thus far it has been

:17:34. > :17:40.James Ward's experience, I think, of certainly playing on a grass court

:17:41. > :17:52.against the power and aggression of Rola.

:17:53. > :18:08.It perhaps was not a bad idea, but the execution was woeful.

:18:09. > :18:19.Very nicely done. And I believe that is the first time

:18:20. > :18:25.James Ward has served and volleyed today, we have seen it a few times

:18:26. > :18:27.today from Rola. Slicing it out wide, forcing the one-handed return,

:18:28. > :18:39.then a nicely played angled volley. There have been a couple of those

:18:40. > :19:06.from Ward. That'll do, a PC one down the

:19:07. > :19:11.middle. -- a speedy one down the middle.

:19:12. > :19:17.The speed gun -- I am not sure if the speed gun is absolutely on the

:19:18. > :20:21.money so far. 134 mph. It is impressive if it is!

:20:22. > :20:28.Ward holds a couple of big serves to see him safely home in that service

:20:29. > :20:35.game. Yes, you will look back on that game

:20:36. > :20:42.with fondness. Those were two great service to finish things off.

:20:43. > :20:47.A reminder of James Ward's pedigree, this is his seventh appearance in

:20:48. > :20:50.this Championships. He has five first-round exits but one glorious

:20:51. > :20:52.run to the semifinal in 2011, when he lost eventually to Jo-Wilfried

:20:53. > :21:04.Tsonga. There it is, you see? The pristine

:21:05. > :21:11.surface, but it can make you scramble around as if on ice.

:21:12. > :21:16.Yes, and I'm not sure if Rola's split step was that efficient. It

:21:17. > :21:17.looked as though he was just running in attempting to change directions,

:21:18. > :21:32.and that is not easy. You can see the marks being left by

:21:33. > :21:34.both players, some of them stretching out by a good few feet.

:21:35. > :21:48.It is slippery out there. Well, Ward thought that ball was

:21:49. > :21:52.perhaps long, but the lineswoman disagreed.

:21:53. > :23:11.Confirmation from the umpire. He did it all welcome except for the

:23:12. > :23:17.final piece of the jigsaw. -- he did it all well, except for.

:23:18. > :23:22.Yes, years not afraid to give it a rip, is he?

:23:23. > :24:06.Now Rola is going to have to fight hard on his serve.

:24:07. > :24:12.sometimes. That can be costly, and James Ward has his first chance.

:24:13. > :24:35.James Ward, not their, in any case. -- not there.

:24:36. > :24:39.Timely first serve from the Slovenian. And nice to see just a

:24:40. > :25:37.bit of touch, a bit of calm thought. him off.

:25:38. > :25:44.This was an inpatient attempt to approach. He was not even inside the

:25:45. > :25:45.baseline when he hit the backhand. He gave James Ward all sorts of time

:25:46. > :26:12.to line that one up. there it is, this time Ward has the

:26:13. > :26:31.breakthrough, so close now to this first set.

:26:32. > :26:39.Yes, nicely played by James Ward. An extraordinary service game, really,

:26:40. > :26:43.from Rola. He was up 40-15, appeared to be cruising, then was in control

:26:44. > :26:51.of that point, missed the backhand, overhit it, missed it by ripping it

:26:52. > :26:55.only an inch long, but did not need to be nearly as precise, then made

:26:56. > :26:59.another couple of errors and Ward was in the battle.

:27:00. > :27:04.Well, even though it is a different surface, of course, you can see why

:27:05. > :27:07.these two Michael had that epic struggle in the qualifiers for the

:27:08. > :27:12.French Open. Very evenly matched.

:27:13. > :27:16.-- you can see why these two. James Ward has plenty of support

:27:17. > :27:21.here, the majority of the crowd, and from those closer to him, Leon Smith

:27:22. > :27:32.watching on, the British Davis Cup captain. He is nearest to as --

:27:33. > :27:36.nearest to us. Sensibly applying lots of sun cream,

:27:37. > :27:41.with his Scottish skin. Yes, porcelain like!

:27:42. > :27:45.It is a nice day, even the threat of some rain later on, we are told, but

:27:46. > :28:54.James Ward in a good position. He will be a very happy man.

:28:55. > :29:33.He will just have to wait a little bit longer.

:29:34. > :29:39.And there is the rower from James Ward, the applause from the crowd,

:29:40. > :29:54.and the British number three has taken the first set, 7-5.

:29:55. > :30:03.COMMENTATOR: First set to James, 7-5, continuing his impressive form

:30:04. > :30:06.in Paris. A great line up here at the Queen's

:30:07. > :30:09.Club and you can have your say of who you think will win this year's

:30:10. > :30:14.title. You can vote for any of the names coming up on screen through

:30:15. > :30:17.the BBC Sport website or using the relative hash tag.

:30:18. > :30:21.The terms and conditions are on the BBC Sport website.

:30:22. > :30:25.Make your choice and the vote will close at two o'clock this afternoon,

:30:26. > :30:26.when we will bring you the results later.

:30:27. > :30:34.There will win this tournament? But let's go back to see who will

:30:35. > :30:37.win this match. COMMENTATOR: Hash tight knot

:30:38. > :30:45.Fleming. Do you tweet? Do you know Twitter?

:30:46. > :30:49.I am a Facebook kind of guy. James Ward, he started so well,

:30:50. > :30:52.rather his opponent started poorly, but then you would have thought it

:30:53. > :30:56.was the Slovenian who was looking stronger in that set, until the very

:30:57. > :30:56.end. Yes,

:30:57. > :30:58.stronger in that set, until the very end.

:30:59. > :31:03.Yes, this match has plenty more to go. It was pretty interesting, I

:31:04. > :31:08.think. Rola's corner will be disappointed with his shot selection

:31:09. > :31:12.in the last couple of games. He just missed balls because he overhit

:31:13. > :31:18.them. It is almost like his mindset is, I am hopeless if I don't hit a

:31:19. > :31:25.winner can find not being -- if I don't have a winner, if I'm not

:31:26. > :31:31.being aggressive. Ward is calmly slicing the ball back deep and

:31:32. > :31:34.allowing Rola to hit himself out. We top about James Ward being

:31:35. > :31:38.comfortable in this environment, he had a very good run here three years

:31:39. > :31:42.ago, Diaz loved playing for Great Britain in the big Davis Cup

:31:43. > :31:47.matches, as well, and his opponent, Blaz Rola, yes, he is on the way up,

:31:48. > :31:51.in the top 100, but there still young guy, playing the challengers

:31:52. > :31:54.and has such -- has had some success, but this will be an alien

:31:55. > :31:59.environment for him. It is, I think you are right, Rola

:32:00. > :32:03.has two things against him. He is a career ranking 91, so this

:32:04. > :32:09.is one of the few tournament see it straight in on the main tour, so

:32:10. > :32:13.just to play in front of this big crowd is a new experience, or

:32:14. > :32:17.somewhat newcomer anyway, and of course this being his first match

:32:18. > :32:23.ever, see is coming to grips with, what do I do out here?

:32:24. > :32:27.James Ward will hope that he does not come to grips with it too

:32:28. > :32:33.quickly, because he said I had some weaponry. He will serve to start the

:32:34. > :32:38.second set. -- he certainly has some weaponry.

:32:39. > :32:47.Yes, he has a lot of skills. Good first serve. Solid off of both

:32:48. > :33:09.wings. And he moves well. He puts it together, he is a scary opponent.

:33:10. > :33:10.will play Grigor Dimitrov, the number 4 seed, the Bulgarian, a

:33:11. > :33:59.very, very talented youngster. Beautifully done. Rola not afraid to

:34:00. > :34:08.come into the net, but Ward making a play. Yes, that of course is a very

:34:09. > :35:04.difficult shot on a blustery day like today.

:35:05. > :35:14.Wonderfully done. The longest rally of the match. Blaz Rola undone by

:35:15. > :35:29.Ward's backhand slice. I like that, Ward just... Old school. Very calm.

:35:30. > :35:31.That is almost new school, very few players will relax and just go with

:35:32. > :35:43.the flow. But despite Ward's best efforts,

:35:44. > :35:48.Blaz Rola holds. Yes, so little between these 2. We talked about

:35:49. > :35:53.James Ward believing he can crack the top 100, but that is some holy

:35:54. > :35:54.Grail in itself. I am sure he would rather go deeper into

:35:55. > :35:57.Grail in itself. I am sure he would rather go deeper tournaments and the

:35:58. > :36:03.rankings will take care of themselves. He is 27 now, he

:36:04. > :36:09.believes that in his late 20s, he can kick on and get inside the top

:36:10. > :36:13.100. 155th at the moment. Yes, and why not? He is certainly as

:36:14. > :36:19.physically fit as he has ever been. As long as your body doesn't give

:36:20. > :36:30.way, with each match you play, you gain a little more experience.

:36:31. > :36:40.And Ian Ward's case, a little more confidence. I think that is the

:36:41. > :36:44.thing that I think is crucial whether he gets into the top 100 --

:36:45. > :37:19.in Ward's case. What I love about the early-season

:37:20. > :37:24.grass courts is you have all sorts of wonderful technology now, you

:37:25. > :37:27.have a heat map that can show you where the players have been, but

:37:28. > :37:34.here you can see it in the scuffs on the court.

:37:35. > :37:43.That had the pace, not quite the touch.

:37:44. > :38:35.Exactly, it wasn't the greatest of drop shots.

:38:36. > :38:49.A sitter. He has had a few of those today, and really failed on most all

:38:50. > :39:05.of them. Yes, perhaps a little drop shot here would have done the trick.

:39:06. > :39:17.A late call, but I think the umpire was pretty certain it was out as

:39:18. > :39:31.well, but we are having a challenge from James Ward. It was a late call,

:39:32. > :39:47.but a good one. And from a position of 40-0, Ward is up against it.

:39:48. > :39:55.That return of serve, just slapped from Rola. Smooth that one back into

:39:56. > :40:18.play, put the pressure on Ward. So eventually, James Ward holds.

:40:19. > :40:27.Just lost his way a little bit in that game, but held his nerve.

:40:28. > :40:36.Yes, really the difference. -- the difference thus far is that Rola has

:40:37. > :41:17.become impatient at inopportune times.

:41:18. > :41:25.That looked like it might be worth a challenge. You have two challenge in

:41:26. > :41:33.a timely fashion, that was just about within the limit. -- you must

:41:34. > :41:35.challenge. Just long enough to look over at his camp! Yes, worth a

:41:36. > :41:46.challenge, but just long. Mr Rola has two challenges

:41:47. > :42:00.remaining. He has got, at times, a very, very

:42:01. > :42:33.gentle touch. He did well bear, had to improvise

:42:34. > :42:47.and get down for that. -- did well bear. That was like John McEnroe,

:42:48. > :42:56.James Ward trying to scrape the one-handed backhand into play. That

:42:57. > :43:00.is a good hold for Rola. Again, so little between these two. Ward with

:43:01. > :43:14.the first set in the bag. We talk about that match they had,

:43:15. > :43:18.but epic tussle, 12-10, in the final set in the French Open. He became

:43:19. > :43:25.the first British man to come through qualifying since... I don't

:43:26. > :43:33.have to tell you who it was. I am not sure if I know anybody who was

:43:34. > :43:41.old enough in 1973? Is it melon head? Is that your nickname for the

:43:42. > :43:49.esteemed John Lloyd? It might be. And then he gave Tommy Robredo,

:43:50. > :43:54.James Ward, gave Tommy Robredo a decent match. Of course, Tommy

:43:55. > :43:58.Robredo, took him to four sets. So he has certainly had his moments,

:43:59. > :44:03.James Ward. I mentioned the Davis Cup and what he has done here as

:44:04. > :44:09.well. He is just on the cusp, he just needs a couple of rounds in a

:44:10. > :44:13.Grand Slam and they really do start to accumulate the ranking points.

:44:14. > :44:18.But also, as you say, more importantly, the confidence. Yes,

:44:19. > :44:25.exactly, you have to get on a roll and perhaps Ward needs to play a few

:44:26. > :44:30.challenges, I mean, he does, he has too, but often you come up here and

:44:31. > :44:38.even though the rankings of the players are higher, the competition

:44:39. > :44:39.is not necessarily any sterner. And as you say, you win a lot more

:44:40. > :45:48.points for each match you win here. Just a bit of misdirection was good

:45:49. > :45:52.enough. Good play by Ward but watch Rola's footwork, doesn't take a

:45:53. > :46:03.split step, just keeps running. We didn't get a good shot of it.

:46:04. > :46:11.It is so crucial to take a split step, on every ball, really.

:46:12. > :46:19.Especially on a slick surface like this, because if you try and run and

:46:20. > :46:22.then grip and change directions, the chances are what happened to Rola

:46:23. > :46:24.there will happen time and again, you lose your footing. No traction,

:46:25. > :47:02.can't change direction. Ward. -- hold. Batman watching his

:47:03. > :47:09.lovely court being shredded -- that man. Yes, once again doing a

:47:10. > :47:14.beautiful job with the court. A beautiful court and a beautiful day.

:47:15. > :48:01.Still on top in the second set. Blaz Rola, from Slovenia. Serving.

:48:02. > :48:28.Then one to the body. Moving along nicely now, Rola.

:48:29. > :48:42.Found a good rhythm, lots of first serves carrying him on.

:48:43. > :48:48.James Ward, I know he wanted to make some real headway in this grass

:48:49. > :48:53.court season. He struggled a bit in Nottingham last week, although he

:48:54. > :48:58.was up against a decent player, the American Steve Johnson. Then he went

:48:59. > :49:04.down to Eastbourne as well to play in the Aegon International down

:49:05. > :49:13.there. The crowd is swelling all the time, a huge stand here behind the

:49:14. > :49:24.players' box, it stretches up. Up to a great height now. Yes, and it is a

:49:25. > :49:30.good order of play. Ward and Dan Evans have both generated quite a

:49:31. > :49:34.bit of interest from their Davis Cup exploits. Lleyton Hewitt, a

:49:35. > :49:42.four-time champion here, always a great draw. So often, the Monday

:49:43. > :49:49.orders of play are less than glamorous, but today it is nice. And

:49:50. > :49:50.if the spectators were here earlier today, they will have seen Andy

:49:51. > :50:05.Murray practising. So we are still on serve in the

:50:06. > :50:19.second set. James Ward with the service.

:50:20. > :50:26.That is where Rola, I think, let himself down a little bit. He

:50:27. > :50:37.doesn't get enough returns of serve into play.

:50:38. > :51:10.But when he does, he can be very good.

:51:11. > :51:27.Just a bit wasteful on the return sometimes.

:51:28. > :52:09.Perfectly placed. Not a lot of power on it.

:52:10. > :52:21.A lazy smash puts it away and James Ward holds. I think it is going to

:52:22. > :52:26.come down to a couple of crucial moments, who hold their nerve, who

:52:27. > :52:31.makes a tiny mistake towards the end of the set. And I think Rola should

:52:32. > :52:35.be thankful that Ward is a bit of a gentleman, because the crew took a

:52:36. > :52:48.couple of steps in. I know a few guys who might have just tagged him.

:52:49. > :53:47.Melon Head would have done it. Of course, it wouldn't have hurt.

:53:48. > :54:02.Yes, very nearly pulled it off. It wasn't an easy shot by any stretch.

:54:03. > :54:19.That is good. For a 136 mph serve... I think you might be

:54:20. > :54:25.right, the radar gun might not be as accurate as some we have seen. Maybe

:54:26. > :54:28.it needs a little fine tuning, because that was a slice serve. 136?

:54:29. > :54:41.I don't think so. That was an overrule.

:54:42. > :54:52.UMPIRE: Mr Rola challenging the call. I am not sure if this was a

:54:53. > :54:58.fault. Comfortably in. That is an ace. James Ward chuntering away, but

:54:59. > :55:22.he can't really complain. So Rola holds and moves on. We

:55:23. > :55:29.talked about him having that college career, which is not long finished.

:55:30. > :55:35.He was the NCAA singles champion last year at Ohio State. You are

:55:36. > :55:43.losing precious years that you could be learning on tour, maybe? Yes and

:55:44. > :55:47.no. There are pluses and minuses. If you go out onto the tour at 18 or

:55:48. > :55:54.19, and you are not really good enough, ranked 300 or 400, you lose

:55:55. > :55:57.a lot on a weekend, week out, and it takes a special kind of guy to work

:55:58. > :56:03.hard and improve and not get frustrated or downhearted. So often,

:56:04. > :56:06.if you go to a university and you have a good coach and a good

:56:07. > :56:14.programme and you get to train as much as the pros do, it is more

:56:15. > :56:20.nurturing environment. And so it often can be a great thing. I know

:56:21. > :56:25.that when I was 18, I could no more think about succeeding as a pro than

:56:26. > :56:30.fly. It was not close. Yet after a couple of years, I had improved

:56:31. > :56:36.enough to where I could compete. So I think it works for a lot of

:56:37. > :56:42.players. Did you have a college career? I did, I went to college for

:56:43. > :56:47.three years. In fact, the very first year, I went to the University of

:56:48. > :56:56.Michigan, Ohio State was our greatest rivals. We will talk more

:56:57. > :57:12.about your college career later. Oh, please.

:57:13. > :57:21.He has missed a lot of those balls. That is the sort of shot that we

:57:22. > :57:23.wouldn't see Djokovic, Murray, Nadal, those guys... They miss a few

:57:24. > :57:49.of them, but not dozens. What are those at the University of

:57:50. > :59:00.Michigan known as? The Wolverines. A little cry of self encouragement

:59:01. > :59:08.punches the air from Ward. He has his hold of serve. Comfortable

:59:09. > :59:15.there, or rather Blaz Rola looked uncomfortable. Too many unforced

:59:16. > :59:16.errors. Yes, it is pretty much a match of the boxer, James Ward, and

:59:17. > :59:27.the puncher, Rola. He is the skilled shotmaker but he

:59:28. > :59:40.is throwing in a few balls like that one, where you just think, huh?

:59:41. > :59:49.A bit ragged now, Rola, but Ward is pressurising him. We mere mortals

:59:50. > :59:52.have hit this serve a few times. You have to give Rola a bit of a break,

:59:53. > :00:02.it is breezy out there. A sense of an opportunity now for

:00:03. > :00:50.James Ward. He is certainly going to challenge

:00:51. > :01:02.that one. Yes, this is a hopeful challenge.

:01:03. > :01:27.Not 1 million miles away, but clear enough.

:01:28. > :01:39.Second serve right on the line, challenge from James Ward.

:01:40. > :01:44.That was clearly on the line, that is why Ward mis-timed the return so

:01:45. > :01:49.badly. Rather desperate challenges here

:01:50. > :01:55.from James Ward. It has got to Siegel-30 and he did not want his

:01:56. > :02:18.momentum faltered. -- it got to zero -30.

:02:19. > :02:31.That is worth a challenge. We are going challenge crazy here!

:02:32. > :02:36.A busy old Hawk-Eye. Right, let's have a look.

:02:37. > :03:14.Good challenge from Rola. And the cry, yes, from Ward, he will

:03:15. > :03:18.have the break point. Furious tactics, really, from the Slovenian.

:03:19. > :04:02.-- curious. Well, there it is, with a double

:04:03. > :04:05.fault, James Ward has the break, and it is just a single game away from a

:04:06. > :04:16.place in the second round. STUDIO: Just one game away from

:04:17. > :04:21.going through to the second round. We did ask you to cast your vote for

:04:22. > :04:24.who you thought might win this Championship.

:04:25. > :04:29.The voting is now closed and we will bring you the result of it at the

:04:30. > :04:35.end of this set or this match, which cover that is. James Ward will be

:04:36. > :04:35.coming out to serve for it in just want.

:04:36. > :04:48.Which ever is. COMMENTATOR: This would be a big

:04:49. > :04:51.result this James Ward can see his way through.

:04:52. > :04:56.Not necessarily in terms of ranking, Blaz Rola just 91st in the world,

:04:57. > :05:00.but that will run in 2011 was the only time in six previous attempts

:05:01. > :05:04.he has been passed the first round, so it would help in terms of ranking

:05:05. > :05:10.points and confidence. Any time you win a match on the main

:05:11. > :05:13.tour when you are ranked 155 is a great day. A real opportunity then

:05:14. > :05:19.to accumulate more points, because the points essentially double with

:05:20. > :05:21.each match you win. And you are not defending anything

:05:22. > :06:05.from last year. It all helps. That was poor shot selection,

:06:06. > :06:10.really, just tipped that one back crosscourt. A little nervous, play

:06:11. > :06:31.the safe shot. Especially under these

:06:32. > :06:37.circumstances, where Rola is just donating bolts left right and

:06:38. > :06:43.centre. -- donating balls. Yes, don't have to do too much, just

:06:44. > :06:49.keep the ball in play and wait for serve ice Rola mistake. -- wait for

:06:50. > :07:14.a serve mistake. If he is going down, Rola, he is

:07:15. > :07:37.going down slugging away. Some powerful ground strokes.

:07:38. > :07:45.He had a chance there, Rola. Yes, he was the beneficiary of the

:07:46. > :07:48.Winter fair, because the returns serve certainly looked as though it

:07:49. > :07:52.was going wide, the wind blew it back into court. -- the beneficiary

:07:53. > :07:59.of the wind. Just a couple of points required to

:08:00. > :08:27.see him home. James Ward looking for a win for the

:08:28. > :08:30.second time in all of his appearances here at Queen's to make

:08:31. > :08:44.it through to the second round. Match point.

:08:45. > :08:51.It is victory for James Ward in front of his hometown crowd. He

:08:52. > :08:58.moves through to the second round, and he does so in straight sets.

:08:59. > :09:07.Yes, a really professional performance from James Ward. He was

:09:08. > :09:11.calm, collected, he chose the right shots and fully deserving of his

:09:12. > :09:15.victory today. That gets us off to a nice start

:09:16. > :09:23.here on Centre Court at the Queen's Club, the first match on this court

:09:24. > :09:29.in this year's Aegon Championships, as the British wild card is through,

:09:30. > :09:33.James Ward come in straights sets, 7-5, 6-4.

:09:34. > :09:39.He moves on to a match with Grigor Dimitrov, the number four seed, who

:09:40. > :09:44.will be a very tall order indeed. The main thing is he is there to

:09:45. > :09:49.have another chance and another day here on Centre Court in front of

:09:50. > :09:53.another big crowd. We have talks about that long run he

:09:54. > :10:00.had to the semifinal three years ago. -- we have talked. Who knows if

:10:01. > :10:05.he can do that again this year, but he certainly has a chance with a

:10:06. > :10:11.victory over top 100 player. And look to the box to his father, who

:10:12. > :10:16.is watching on, and to Leon Smith, the Davis Cup captain. In the Davis

:10:17. > :10:20.Cup he has provided plenty of impressive performances, and another

:10:21. > :10:26.one here today. James Ward safely through to the second round.

:10:27. > :10:32.A straight sets victory in the end, let's see what James Ward thought of

:10:33. > :10:35.it, he is talking now to Andrew Castle.

:10:36. > :10:41.He is talking to me now readies. Good work, a British victory to

:10:42. > :10:44.start our coverage here, congratulations, James.

:10:45. > :10:49.How did that feel? Thank you. Never easy, first match

:10:50. > :10:53.on the grass, playing in front of a home crowd, a bit of added pressure

:10:54. > :10:57.but thank you for the support, it has been unbelievable, and I look

:10:58. > :11:00.forward to hopefully recreating memories of a couple of years ago.

:11:01. > :11:05.Indeed. You seem to play well here, what is

:11:06. > :11:07.it about this court that you like so much?

:11:08. > :11:12.I think it is the best grasscourt it is. I had the privilege to open up

:11:13. > :11:18.the tournament to date that Michael today.

:11:19. > :11:21.-- open up the tournament today. What about your next opponent,

:11:22. > :11:26.Grigor Dimitrov question might have you played him before?

:11:27. > :11:30.Yes, I played him a few years ago, maybe that doesn't count, but we

:11:31. > :11:35.practised recently together, we will see how it goes.

:11:36. > :11:39.Looking over your results over the first six or seven months of this

:11:40. > :11:43.year, it is not easy surviving at the ranking you are yet you are such

:11:44. > :11:47.a quality player. How do you keep going out there, is it days in the

:11:48. > :11:51.sun like this question might yes, of course, there is no better feeling

:11:52. > :11:55.than winning a match here at Queen's, winning at home, these are

:11:56. > :12:00.the times you play for. I will carry on and see where I can

:12:01. > :12:01.get to. Well done, mate, congratulations.

:12:02. > :12:06.Ladies and gentlemen, James Ward. What really separates the great from

:12:07. > :12:15.the good? Style? Of course.

:12:16. > :12:18.Flair? Obviously.

:12:19. > :12:26.Passion? That is a given.

:12:27. > :12:30.Learn from your mistakes. Always think about what you have

:12:31. > :12:33.missed. Never be satisfied with what you

:12:34. > :12:39.have done. Whatever you do, do it with your

:12:40. > :12:43.heart. I never thought about what I could

:12:44. > :12:51.get out of football. I just wanted to play.

:12:52. > :12:58.And the wait is almost over, the build-up to the World Cup continues

:12:59. > :13:02.tomorrow night as Gary Lineker presents a special documentary on

:13:03. > :13:06.the world's fascination with Brazil and the beautiful game, including

:13:07. > :13:11.meeting the legend, Ronaldo. That is 10:35pm tomorrow on BBC1 HD.

:13:12. > :13:15.The World Cup gets underway on Thursday, we will be back on

:13:16. > :13:21.Wednesday night with a full preview of the tournament on BBC1 HD at

:13:22. > :13:25.10:35pm on Wednesday. It is certainly tennis all the way

:13:26. > :13:28.here and James Ward has won his opening match.

:13:29. > :13:32.We asked you to vote on social media for who you thought would win the

:13:33. > :13:35.title here at the Queen's Club in west London.

:13:36. > :13:39.Those were the options and, surprise surprise, Mr Murray has come it on

:13:40. > :13:46.top, 71% of the vote. Stanislas Wawrinka, the top seed,

:13:47. > :13:52.has 11%, and going down to Grigor Dimitrov, 2% of the vote.

:13:53. > :13:56.I am sitting here with John Lloyd...

:13:57. > :14:02.Why is other above Marin Cilic? Anyway, I am here with John Lloyd.

:14:03. > :14:05.Looking at that obviously Murray is the big favourite having won it two

:14:06. > :14:09.or three times before, but outside of that who are the main

:14:10. > :14:14.contenders? I think Stan Wawrinka, obviously, we

:14:15. > :14:18.have seen what he can do and he is a good grasscourt player. He needs

:14:19. > :14:22.this tournament, big-time, because of his dismal showing in the French

:14:23. > :14:27.Open. He needs matches but he has the toughest draw by far coming

:14:28. > :14:32.year. He could play Marcos Baghdatis in the second round and that is not

:14:33. > :14:37.easy. I like the look of Grigor Dimitrov. That was amazing title run

:14:38. > :14:41.he had there. I like the look of Grigor Dimitrov, he is another one

:14:42. > :14:45.that needs matches because he lost in the first round of the French

:14:46. > :14:49.Open and he is in desperate need. He is a very good grasscourt player. I

:14:50. > :14:56.think Grigor Dimitrov may be the sneaky one, if you look beyond the

:14:57. > :14:59.top two. He has a great game can everyone is

:15:00. > :15:05.talking about him as the future of men's tennis.

:15:06. > :15:13.The little girls that were following him, they absolutely loved him, he

:15:14. > :15:16.got the number one vote in the all girls' department.

:15:17. > :15:20.A great talent, isn't he? He is, he is one of those guys that

:15:21. > :15:23.adapts well to the service because it is not easy to play on,

:15:24. > :15:30.especially when it is as slippery as it is today. He may be one of the

:15:31. > :15:34.top favourites, he may be second favourite, actually, for me, behind

:15:35. > :15:38.Andy. I think Marin Cilic, of course, former champion here, also a

:15:39. > :15:44.danger. And Thomas Burdick, as well. --

:15:45. > :15:50.Tomas Berdych. I think so much depends on home

:15:51. > :15:56.comfortable you are moving on this surface. I think Marin Cilic seems

:15:57. > :16:00.to do it very well. Tomas Berdych, less comfortable on this surface,

:16:01. > :16:03.and I think Stan Wawrinka, less comfortable than years on other

:16:04. > :16:12.surfaces. Although, at Wimbledon...

:16:13. > :16:14.Yes... That is fair to say, you did OK that year.

:16:15. > :16:19.What about the big talking point in France, Ernests Gulbis? What can we

:16:20. > :16:22.expect from him? He is so unpredictable, that is why

:16:23. > :16:27.I like watching him, universal but he is going to do, he doesn't know

:16:28. > :16:31.what he is going to do. He has the strangest forehand, and what a

:16:32. > :16:35.weapon it is. He has a great dramatic backhand, to come he dines

:16:36. > :16:39.around the place and is not afraid of anyone. He kept Roger Federer

:16:40. > :16:43.waiting, did not care about that. He did not have great things to say

:16:44. > :16:46.about Novak Djokovic, he grew up with demand was that the same

:16:47. > :16:51.academy as him. He got in trouble about what he said

:16:52. > :16:55.about the women, he said they should stay at home rather than being on

:16:56. > :16:58.the circuit. I'm looking forward to seeing him play, because he is

:16:59. > :17:03.dangerous. And he has also broken into the top ten for the first time.

:17:04. > :17:07.He is riding high, very confident and has a great serve and terrific

:17:08. > :17:12.backhand. Again, there is one of those guys you have to just wait and

:17:13. > :17:15.see. How well will hear just to playing on this surface? I think

:17:16. > :17:21.this year is a great year for Ernests Gulbis thinking, I do have a

:17:22. > :17:24.chance. In so many previous years I think we have seen him come in

:17:25. > :17:30.thinking, I am not playing very well, if it does not happen it

:17:31. > :17:33.doesn't happen, and he almost woks through the month on grass and

:17:34. > :17:42.hasn't really put in the best effort. -- the almost what this...

:17:43. > :17:45.-- waltzes through. His attitude seems to be so much

:17:46. > :17:49.better. These are some of the new names, what about the golden oldies

:17:50. > :17:55.version Mike Lleyton Hewitt did amazingly well last year.

:17:56. > :17:59.-- what about the golden oldies? Lleyton Hewitt did amazingly well

:18:00. > :18:04.last year and looking for a fifth title?

:18:05. > :18:08.He is amazing, he is one of those players that he gives 110% every

:18:09. > :18:12.time he plays, and this is the best surface for him now to have a chance

:18:13. > :18:17.to go deep into the tournament, grand slam or any other, because on

:18:18. > :18:20.grass he knows how to move, he can get quick points comedy is

:18:21. > :18:28.physically better for him. He could have run here. He is good on grass.

:18:29. > :18:30.Looking back briefly to James Ward, I was looking at some of the

:18:31. > :18:35.statistics, he played seven tournament this year and won less

:18:36. > :18:37.than ?5,000 because it is the Challenger circuit.

:18:38. > :18:44.He played before the French Open in Germany and reached the second round

:18:45. > :18:49.and won ?485 prize money. You are trying to travel, pay for

:18:50. > :18:51.your Hotel and keeper coach going, that match to qualify for the French

:18:52. > :18:57.Open was huge. He is living on the fringes of what

:18:58. > :19:02.is a very rich to. -- very rich tour.

:19:03. > :19:10.Yes, I think that is something the tourist trying to address. When the

:19:11. > :19:14.prize-money breakdowns were first brought up, they thought 150 players

:19:15. > :19:17.should be able to make a living. That is still not the case and when

:19:18. > :19:22.you consider how much more money is in the game now than there used to

:19:23. > :19:25.be. I mean, when you watch the qualifying of these tenements and

:19:26. > :19:28.when you see a guy ranked 200 against a guy ranked 300 and they

:19:29. > :19:34.are really awesome players, they are great, and the only difference

:19:35. > :19:39.between a guy ranked 200 and guy ranked 20 or 50, is just that the

:19:40. > :19:41.guy ranked 50 has won a few more matches, you understand what it

:19:42. > :19:49.takes to win and has more confidence. But the tour should be

:19:50. > :19:53.able to support more guys who can afford to go out and play

:19:54. > :19:56.full-time. All credit to James Ward, at age 27, to still keep on going

:19:57. > :20:01.and think, I am going to break through, I can do it.

:20:02. > :20:05.It is something the tour has to look at.

:20:06. > :20:08.Yes, it is and we will see the headlines when we come to Wimbledon

:20:09. > :20:14.if we see a British player losing in the first round, one of the things

:20:15. > :20:19.they always talk about is whatever prize-money V2 corn, but what they

:20:20. > :20:21.don't get is they have earned $7,000 in the first four months of the

:20:22. > :20:25.year. I am sure we will talk more about

:20:26. > :20:28.that through the week, but next is another Brit, the wild card Dan

:20:29. > :20:31.Evans. Dan, welcome back to the Queen's

:20:32. > :20:36.Club, somewhere you have good memories of from last year?

:20:37. > :20:43.Yes, last year was a very good year, made this the third round had very

:20:44. > :20:46.good matches and it set me up for the rest of the year. It was one of

:20:47. > :20:51.the platforms, wasn't it? In the summer you went on and had a

:20:52. > :20:54.great run in the Challengers below the main circuit and that led to the

:20:55. > :21:01.U.S. Open. What are your memories of that time?

:21:02. > :21:05.I got my game together out in America, on the hard courts, lost in

:21:06. > :21:12.the first round in Lexington, got some good training and went on and

:21:13. > :21:17.played to finals. It just went on from there, really.

:21:18. > :21:21.Then the third round in the U.S. Open and before I knew it I was

:21:22. > :21:28.playing really good, and it all just came together. What was that like?

:21:29. > :21:31.You're obviously playing in the wrong below the main circuit, you

:21:32. > :21:35.have played some qualifiers and had some success, but it must give you a

:21:36. > :21:39.heck of a taste for what life could be like, because you are just

:21:40. > :21:44.outside that top 100 and if you get inside it life changes.

:21:45. > :21:48.Yes, at the time I don't really know what is happening, I am just day by

:21:49. > :21:52.day playing the matches, and the more I look back I think it was a

:21:53. > :22:00.pretty good effort what I did. Definitely being in the top 100 live

:22:01. > :22:04.could change quite a bit, and that is why I am here this week, to get

:22:05. > :22:07.some more points and push towards the top 100.

:22:08. > :22:12.It is probably a maturing process, isn't it? As a tennis player and a

:22:13. > :22:15.person that you have gone through? Because I don't think you have

:22:16. > :22:20.always known hopes Ackley how much you want it -- I don't think you

:22:21. > :22:24.have always known exactly how much you want it until the last year, is

:22:25. > :22:31.that true? Yes, tennis and what it takes to get

:22:32. > :22:37.into the top 100, definitely being a little older than playing more of

:22:38. > :22:42.these events with the better guys around does definitely give you more

:22:43. > :22:45.of a taste of what it takes to get up there with those guys.

:22:46. > :22:50.I suppose hanging around with Andy Murray, as well, you're going to

:22:51. > :22:55.learn a lot. He seems to be in your corner, as well, there seems to be

:22:56. > :23:01.quite a lot of support from him. Yes, you do support me quite a lot

:23:02. > :23:07.-- he does support me, and that is something that is priceless, having

:23:08. > :23:10.him to ask a few questions. There are not many people around who have

:23:11. > :23:16.won Wimbledon and who are supporting me. That sort of thing is great, but

:23:17. > :23:23.ultimately it comes down to me having to win the matches, so that

:23:24. > :23:28.is what I need to do. Get the matches won and get the points in

:23:29. > :23:34.the bag. Well, big chance also hear today for Dan Evans to get some of

:23:35. > :23:36.those ranking points, get some of the prize-money here, a wild card in

:23:37. > :23:39.the Queen's Club. But there is a bit of a delay,

:23:40. > :23:48.because the umpire is having a bit of trouble with the chair.

:23:49. > :23:55.What is he asking for? I see...

:23:56. > :23:59.It is like the table is not quite where he wants it. Makeshift table,

:24:00. > :24:05.perfect! That is not going to work, he is not happy.

:24:06. > :24:09.Day one and I am afraid we have had a malfunction on Centre Court, and

:24:10. > :24:15.the umpire is not happy. The players are just seated at the moment and

:24:16. > :24:19.we're waiting for play, which is not ideal is it?

:24:20. > :24:24.No, especially Dan Evans, who I would have thought would be a bit

:24:25. > :24:27.nervous now, about to play his first match. This is the second most

:24:28. > :24:37.important tournament, probably, he will play this year. Emotionally, he

:24:38. > :24:40.wants to get out and get it on. Ross Hutchins, it is his first year

:24:41. > :24:44.here as tournament director and already a bit of a problem. I just

:24:45. > :24:48.wonder if Chris Kermode is going up there as former tournament director

:24:49. > :24:54.saying, this never happened when I was in charge!

:24:55. > :24:59.The umpire does not look ready. But, finally...

:25:00. > :25:04.The chair is going up, the table is set, and it looks like we could be

:25:05. > :25:07.in for the start. We are ready to go, Peter, thank you very much.

:25:08. > :25:12.Let's hope we will have no more trouble. Let's join our

:25:13. > :25:23.commentators, John and Andrew. Thank you very much indeed.

:25:24. > :26:12.Dan Evans is at our end. He will serve first.

:26:13. > :26:16.It looks like he has got a bit of beef on that south since we last saw

:26:17. > :26:48.him play. -- on that serve. That will do nicely, Evans opened

:26:49. > :26:53.his account. A tidy start. When you were Davis Cup captain, did you pick

:26:54. > :26:59.him, dropping? Fire him? No, I picked him a lot. He was

:27:00. > :27:03.pretty young when he got in the team, but he deserved his spot. But

:27:04. > :27:09.he was unlucky in some ways. He played a couple of fifth rubber

:27:10. > :27:13.there against players that were better than him at the time and lost

:27:14. > :27:17.a couple of them and I think it affected him for a while. It is a

:27:18. > :27:20.tough thing to go to a Davis Cup match and play the fifth rubber and

:27:21. > :27:25.lose. He was a very talented player, down, it is just the mental side he

:27:26. > :27:27.seems to have improved so much in in the last three -- in the last year

:27:28. > :28:06.or so. 33 years old, Jurgen Melzer. Next

:28:07. > :28:11.top ten, he was number eight once upon a time.

:28:12. > :28:18.Top ten in singles and doubles, this is a quality player from Austria.

:28:19. > :28:25.And he won Junior Wimbledon back in 1999, as well. So he knows his way

:28:26. > :28:28.around a grass court. He knows how difficult it is to adjust the first

:28:29. > :29:40.few days, especially the first match with grass under your feet.

:29:41. > :29:50.Good point. Dan Evans's favourite shot, the

:29:51. > :29:54.backhand slice, can be an offensive weapon as well as a defensive shot.

:29:55. > :29:58.It stays low on the grass. He was asking questions there of Melzer.

:29:59. > :30:13.Game point now. I think Evans would like that point

:30:14. > :30:25.back now, you probably should have unleashed one of those backhanders.

:30:26. > :30:29.7000 people here on the main court. A massive, temporary structures all

:30:30. > :30:37.the way around. -- massive temporary structures. Lovely.

:30:38. > :30:44.He has good technique on the volley, Dan Evans. This is perfect here,

:30:45. > :30:46.gets the racket out in front, nicely balanced when he hit this volley,

:30:47. > :30:59.there is the split step. All those times that he struggled in

:31:00. > :31:08.the Davis Cup, when you pick Tim, somebody else benefited -- picked

:31:09. > :31:15.him. Last week, he won a massive match -- last year, he won a massive

:31:16. > :31:22.match, the fifth match, against Russia, which laid the foundations

:31:23. > :31:26.for that wonderful run this year to the quarterfinals, beating America

:31:27. > :31:31.in America before losing to Italy. It takes time in the Davis Cup, it

:31:32. > :31:35.is not always easy when you are thrown in at 19 years old. You

:31:36. > :31:37.hopefully mature and learn from it, which is what he has done, and now

:31:38. > :32:53.he is a very good Davis Cup player. He is coming out of the chair, he is

:32:54. > :32:58.trying to figure it out. I think it is the wrong cushion. Mohammed has

:32:59. > :33:03.been off for a couple of weeks. He took the French Open off and went

:33:04. > :33:07.home to the family, because they do spend an awful lot of time on the

:33:08. > :33:14.road, 20 weeks plus, some of these umpires. And it is a long time the,

:33:15. > :33:21.-- a long time, because they never lose in the first round. They should

:33:22. > :33:25.have tried it my way, and they are only there to criticise, it is not

:33:26. > :33:29.often you come in and say how wonderful the umpire is. If he

:33:30. > :33:36.messes up, people are quick to say it is a lousy job. Shall we praise

:33:37. > :33:41.the umpires, this British grass court season? See how long it lasts.

:33:42. > :33:48.It is the most difficult surface to call on, that is visual, because

:33:49. > :33:52.there are no marks left. The umpires now are so much better than they

:33:53. > :33:57.used to be, they know only to get involved when they need to. In the

:33:58. > :34:01.old days, they used to overrule on a far line, ridiculous on grass courts

:34:02. > :34:05.where they can't see. They used to cause problems. They are pretty good

:34:06. > :34:10.now, by and large, very experienced, they know what they are doing. You

:34:11. > :34:14.know you have made it as an umpire when you have your own position with

:34:15. > :34:21.your own name on it. It is like Rafa with his shoes. He brings his own

:34:22. > :34:24.pillow, he is prepared with his back support. I think they virtually

:34:25. > :34:26.strapped him in. So he will be the umpire for the rest of the week! No

:34:27. > :34:53.brakes. -- breaks. It is an interesting matchup. It is

:34:54. > :34:59.a good match for Don Evans -- Dan Evans, he got the fourth round of

:35:00. > :35:06.Wimbledon last year, so he is no mug on surface.

:35:07. > :35:14.Beautiful. A sort of opponent that, now, you would feel at this stage of

:35:15. > :35:18.his career, Dan Evans on grass should certainly have a good shot at

:35:19. > :35:21.winning a match like this or certainly getting close. These are

:35:22. > :35:25.the sort of players now, you look at him and think he has a very good

:35:26. > :35:26.chance to win this match. He has certainly started off with a lot of

:35:27. > :35:44.confidence. Melzer, 9 million US dollars in his

:35:45. > :35:49.career in prize-money. ?6 million, probably add another million or two

:35:50. > :35:53.for bits and bobs. A lot more than that, he was a big name in Austria

:35:54. > :35:56.so he will have done very well with endorsements and things like that

:35:57. > :36:27.there. Yes, we don't have to worry about Melzer for his next few meals.

:36:28. > :36:35.A very well constructed point. As you pointed out about his slice

:36:36. > :36:39.backhand, he hits the heavy first forehand and then the extreme slice

:36:40. > :36:44.which Melzer hit up but couldn't do much with. He can't dig it up to do

:36:45. > :36:52.much damage with it and then the big forehand takes over.

:36:53. > :37:00.That one, though, there was not enough bite on.

:37:01. > :37:06.Good quality match, though, already. We have only just started but you

:37:07. > :37:08.can see right away, both players have no nerves and striking the ball

:37:09. > :37:34.well. A little slip there from Dan Evans.

:37:35. > :37:38.And he did very well and has such lovely hands and feel but he was

:37:39. > :37:53.able just to control the ball and get back in the rally.

:37:54. > :38:13.Admirable plan of action here. Very good. That first return, he just

:38:14. > :38:17.bunted it back, punched it back but the depth was good, about a foot

:38:18. > :38:22.from the baseline, Melzer couldn't do much with it and then the big

:38:23. > :38:30.forehand takes over. He is mixing it up well so far, Dan Evans.

:38:31. > :38:36.That was the body serve. First game, he just served big serves into

:38:37. > :40:14.the corners and there, a good variation.

:40:15. > :40:18.they make a bad error, generally speaking, they are much more solid

:40:19. > :41:35.on the next point, they don't do it again. Good way to respond, though.

:41:36. > :41:45.Four points in a row and Dan Evans confirms the break of serve. The

:41:46. > :41:51.Davis Cup captain is happy as one of his close for -1 up. I was just

:41:52. > :41:55.thinking, John, as we look at the scoreline, comfortable the Dan Evans

:41:56. > :42:05.so well, this time last year, he won two rounds, he played Nieminen and

:42:06. > :42:08.then lost to Del Potro, played a couple of rounds, and then was a

:42:09. > :42:14.quarterfinalist in the Nottingham Challenger and in the summer,

:42:15. > :42:21.quarterfinal into challenges, in the US, he qualified, he beat atomic.

:42:22. > :42:27.That is his ranking, isn't it? -- he beat Tomic. That is his computer

:42:28. > :42:31.points. Everything between now and September. Does that put pressure on

:42:32. > :42:36.a player or do you just have to hit the ball? It does, in the back of

:42:37. > :42:41.your mind. People pointed out to you, everyone knows where ranking

:42:42. > :42:46.points come from and it is a bit more pressure -- point it out.

:42:47. > :42:51.Looking at Dan Evans, he is so much more mature as a player and as you

:42:52. > :42:59.said about his serve, it has got more pace. He is actually getting

:43:00. > :43:02.aces and almost serves that cannot be returned, more pace about his

:43:03. > :43:08.game and he seems mentally a better player. I think he is going to be a

:43:09. > :43:12.top 100 player before long. He has certainly got the game to be there

:43:13. > :43:17.and I think he could be top 50 with his game, as long as he gives

:43:18. > :43:21.applying himself. He has made the jump when he realises the pro, with

:43:22. > :43:24.the sort of work you have to do consistently... Lets hope he keeps

:43:25. > :43:53.that up, because he is very talented.

:43:54. > :43:59.That is just class. Talk about variation, that point had

:44:00. > :44:04.everything. Sliced backhand is, the drive backhand, and then coming in

:44:05. > :44:07.there at around the service box and a brilliant disguise on the drop

:44:08. > :44:33.shot. No chance for Melzer to get in close.

:44:34. > :44:44.UMPIRE: Wait, please. Good shout, right on it. I certainly didn't spot

:44:45. > :45:08.it. 24 years of age, and Aston Villa fan

:45:09. > :45:37.against Bayern Munich fan. That was a poor flight. That was in

:45:38. > :46:00.the middle of the net. Quite a bit point as well.

:46:01. > :46:06.A couple of inches lower and it might have been interesting. Played

:46:07. > :46:27.quite safe here, but made him play. Slippery left-handed serve, isn't

:46:28. > :46:30.it? Out wide. It is horrible to try and defend against. I don't know

:46:31. > :46:36.why, but left-handers seem to have such an advantage compare to a

:46:37. > :46:37.right-hander serving to a left-hander. Probably just feels

:46:38. > :46:57.that way because I am right-handed. I can't believe he hit that ball on

:46:58. > :47:02.the overhead, it was close to going out and I thought he would let that

:47:03. > :47:08.one bounce. Then it it is this drop shot again from behind the baseline.

:47:09. > :47:11.Melzer is coming up against someone that is giving him a lot of

:47:12. > :47:25.different looks and he is not liking the looks that are coming at him.

:47:26. > :47:32.That is too bad. There is no danger of injury on those ones, both feet

:47:33. > :47:38.going at the same time, but he sets up and suddenly the feet are not

:47:39. > :47:40.there. At this point, he was in a good position to hit a winner as

:47:41. > :48:05.well. So depressing. baseline is cutting up a bit.

:48:06. > :48:13.UMPIRE: Mr Melzer is challenging the call. It looks like it floated long

:48:14. > :48:22.to the naked eye but we have big screens either end of the court.

:48:23. > :48:48.Having a look at Dan Evans' year so far and a bit like James Ward

:48:49. > :48:52.earlier on, who had a superb victory against Blaz Rola, the number one

:48:53. > :48:57.Slovenian on this caught a few minutes ago, the British Davis Cup

:48:58. > :49:02.team minus Andy Murray, if we didn't have him, we would have these two.

:49:03. > :49:05.Qualified in Joe Hart, qualified and made the semifinal in Zagreb,

:49:06. > :49:11.Qualified in Joe Hart, qualified and played seven matches on a tour event

:49:12. > :49:17.-- qualified in Joe Hart. He beat Kohlschreiber amongst others and

:49:18. > :49:23.loss to Tommy Haas. Qualified in Marseille. Just the second round in

:49:24. > :49:27.Nottingham last week. Lost to the Australian. But he doesn't play

:49:28. > :49:32.doubles. With a game like he has got, you would think he would play

:49:33. > :49:36.doubles but he has made zero money from doubles. He is a talented

:49:37. > :49:40.player and would be very good at doubles if he played consistently. I

:49:41. > :49:45.just wonder why he wouldn't do that, with a ranking of 139 in the world,

:49:46. > :49:51.you are not making a lot of money after you pay your expenses.

:49:52. > :49:56.When he is playing qualifying, he has to get to the next tournament.

:49:57. > :50:03.That is another factor to put you off. Hopefully his ranking, the way

:50:04. > :50:04.he's playing at the moment, he won't have to worry about qualifying

:50:05. > :50:21.anymore. It not that far away. That one was, to put it mildly, a

:50:22. > :50:59.difficult shot he tried there. thing here, he is just asking the

:51:00. > :51:07.question of Dan. He is holding serve and then he is going to ask Dan

:51:08. > :51:11.Evans whether he can serve out or not. The moment of truth in this

:51:12. > :51:24.set. Tension between the players just

:51:25. > :51:28.ratchets up a little bit. The players will certainly feel it,

:51:29. > :51:33.whether the crowd do or not. This is certainly a moment in this match. If

:51:34. > :51:38.he can take this set away, he will be in great shape.

:51:39. > :51:51.That one ended up at the tube station.

:51:52. > :51:59.Danger. He needs a first serves. It was a good second serve, but Melzer

:52:00. > :52:02.was so solid on the return and took charge of the rally early on. Evans

:52:03. > :52:49.always on the back foot. That is matchplay right there from

:52:50. > :52:51.Evans. Huge second serve, that was. We haven't got the speed gun at the

:52:52. > :53:20.moment. Evans selecting the newest ball,

:53:21. > :53:44.probably. That is a fabulous service game. Dan

:53:45. > :53:52.Evans, first set to him. 6-3 with that break of serve. Quality. Not

:53:53. > :53:59.trying to put a damper on anything, but you think he is a top 100 player

:54:00. > :54:03.in waiting, top 50. I have seen him play Davis Cup tennis up close, he

:54:04. > :54:06.can really play with quality. What is the difference between 100 player

:54:07. > :54:09.in waiting, top 50. I have seen him play Davis Cup tennis up close, he

:54:10. > :54:12.can really play with quality. What is the difference between the top

:54:13. > :54:18.hundred and that? What has he got to do and how many wins would you say

:54:19. > :54:22.it is? In terms of wins, obviously Grand Slams is where you accumulate

:54:23. > :54:26.the big points. If he can play well in Wimbledon, he has a grass court

:54:27. > :54:30.season coming up where you can make a big jump, but it is the

:54:31. > :54:37.consistency. That said there was as good as it gets from Dan Evans. --

:54:38. > :54:41.that set. He came on court and took charge against the vastly more

:54:42. > :54:48.experienced player. All of a sudden, the big first serves, the second

:54:49. > :54:52.serves... The problem sometimes with Dan is he doesn't keep that level up

:54:53. > :54:57.and that is the difference, the good players keep that level up. He has

:54:58. > :55:04.got to consistently play like this. Does he do the work of the Court Two

:55:05. > :55:10.get him there? He is now, but again, it is being consistent. You can't do

:55:11. > :55:15.it occasionally. It is a. You see Andy Murray, these training camps

:55:16. > :55:22.they go to, it is 52 weeks of the year -- it is a business. Sometimes

:55:23. > :55:27.Dan would get it together for a few odd weeks and then go off and enjoy

:55:28. > :55:33.himself. You have to have brakes now and again but this is a business and

:55:34. > :55:37.you have to treat it like that and I think he can be a top 50 player in

:55:38. > :55:43.the world. -- you have to have breaks. Some of the corporate

:55:44. > :55:47.hospitality here is second to none at the Queen's Club and people are

:55:48. > :55:49.just drifting in at around 3pm. That is when a good lunch comes to a

:55:50. > :56:01.close. Now, against someone like Melzer,

:56:02. > :56:04.you win the first set but you can't relax for one second because you

:56:05. > :56:07.know Melzer is going to come at you. He is not going to give you

:56:08. > :57:05.anything easily, that is for sure. Look at that. Beautiful. Literally,

:57:06. > :57:14.you can't get it any closer to the net than that. Little bit back spin

:57:15. > :57:18.just brings it back in. -- of back spin.

:57:19. > :57:25.That is three serve and volleys in a row, you don't see it very often

:57:26. > :57:26.from Melzer. You don't see it very often from anybody, to be honest,

:57:27. > :57:48.these days. Fine work. Five times he has been

:57:49. > :57:54.victorious on the ATP Tour. The last of those was the hard courts, in

:57:55. > :57:58.North America, leading up to the U.S. Open last year. So he is a

:57:59. > :58:07.winner quite recently, and an old one to, he's 33 now, he turned that

:58:08. > :58:14.last month. Eight career finals as well, so 13 times he has been in an

:58:15. > :58:16.ATP final. An experienced man. He is going to stick around in this, you

:58:17. > :58:24.would imagine. That is worthy of booing. Eight sets

:58:25. > :59:09.of hands were up on that one. We saw the technique on his forehand

:59:10. > :59:12.volley in the first set, now we are seeing the backhand volley. This is

:59:13. > :59:17.getting the ball out in front. Look how far in front he was, but

:59:18. > :00:35.perfectly balanced. Just punched that ball away. Beautifully done.

:00:36. > :00:40.serve, Jurgen Melzer. He has improved his second serve power too.

:00:41. > :02:42.He is crunching the seconds and they are about an inch from the line.

:02:43. > :02:50.The first day of wings club. We have got this and Eastbourne next week

:02:51. > :02:57.and then the Championships at Wimbledon -- Queen's Club. You look

:02:58. > :03:03.very well. It has gone quickly this year with Andy Murray as Wimbledon

:03:04. > :03:08.champion. The weather is better today. I do not think we had a day

:03:09. > :03:15.like this last year. It was dreadful. The amount of rain delays

:03:16. > :03:22.were amazing. The temperature, it was about 15 degrees less. Perfect

:03:23. > :03:29.at the moment. Andy Murray in action on Wednesday. We are lucky to have

:03:30. > :03:34.him. We certainly are. He is a class player. With the French Open, you

:03:35. > :03:39.are left with that last image. He got dumped by the greatest

:03:40. > :03:43.clay-court player of all-time. We have to not forget he got to the

:03:44. > :03:47.semifinals. Considering where he was with his injury and stuff he played

:03:48. > :03:55.tremendous matches. He looked tired in the semis. Unfortunately, coming

:03:56. > :03:59.up against Nadal who was on a different planet, that is obvious.

:04:00. > :04:03.Anybody who has ever had surgery knows it is not just a physical

:04:04. > :04:08.thing, mentally to come back from surgery takes a little bit of

:04:09. > :04:11.something. He certainly appears to be back in terms of his appetite for

:04:12. > :04:42.victory. No question. Another good sir. At the moment,

:04:43. > :04:47.Melzer is not sure where the ball is going -- another good serve. He is

:04:48. > :04:55.hitting wide, down the middle. He is not getting any rhythm. He is trying

:04:56. > :05:10.to changes position to put a different look in his mind.

:05:11. > :05:25.It is good, professional staff from Melzer. -- stuff. Got to do

:05:26. > :05:43.something. Big serves from Dan Evans.

:05:44. > :05:53.Two excellent returns of serves from Melzer on the forehand. Forcing

:05:54. > :06:03.Evans into errors. What is this about?

:06:04. > :06:58.It is going to be a long British season, Madame! She is getting

:06:59. > :07:08.worked up on behalf of Dan Evans already.

:07:09. > :07:16.Do you think it could have been that Evans was having a word with the

:07:17. > :07:22.umpire about Melzer leaping around on his first serve? It did not feel

:07:23. > :07:32.that way. Here's leaping around. All over the place. He has opened up his

:07:33. > :07:41.rack -- his racket. He is like a peacock saying, serve at me. Pulled

:07:42. > :07:44.the double fault out. This is legitimate gamesmanship, that is

:07:45. > :07:58.what this is. I think he is having a moan. Melzer

:07:59. > :08:03.saying, come on, lad. This is good! Good stuff.

:08:04. > :08:07.He has certainly not served as well. He has lost his first serve

:08:08. > :08:28.rhythm. That is going to irritate. It is

:08:29. > :08:37.going to be age Allan Johnston is. -- be a challenge upstairs. Melzer,

:08:38. > :08:41.by getting himself animated, by getting Evans to take his eye off

:08:42. > :08:48.the ball, I think he has got the break. Yes, he has. It is well

:08:49. > :09:02.played. Are you all right with that? Absolutely.

:09:03. > :09:17.It would not be OK if he was doing it to you! Of course not.

:09:18. > :09:27.When it comes to body banter and throwing a bit of cheeky stuff

:09:28. > :09:52.around, I think Dan would be able to hold his own.

:09:53. > :09:59.Now Evans knocks the ball over there knowing that the poor girl will not

:10:00. > :10:05.be able to pick it up. Makes Melzer weight. Never say you have got to

:10:06. > :10:08.play your game. You have got to play your opponent. That is what they are

:10:09. > :11:04.doing here. Got to be kidding! I don't know if

:11:05. > :11:11.we will see many misses like that in the World Cup! That was an open

:11:12. > :11:13.goal. That is unbelievable that he could miss by that much as well.

:11:14. > :11:40.Open court. A big point as well. Evans has got to be careful. He is

:11:41. > :11:44.getting pushed too far behind the baseline. The passing shots are not

:11:45. > :12:04.easy to hit a winner in that position.

:12:05. > :12:17.He is back in France again, Dan Evans, shouting! He has not adjusted

:12:18. > :12:22.his time clock. Held his ground and planted the foot and played the open

:12:23. > :12:31.stance back and. There is no time on a grass court. -- backhand. It shows

:12:32. > :12:39.a player and double on the surface. -- comfortable. He is still having a

:12:40. > :12:45.go at the umpire about the way Melzer is moving between the service

:12:46. > :12:50.motion. But he has got his own back on him there. As you quite rightly

:12:51. > :12:57.said. He time wasted a bit, legitimately again, but again that

:12:58. > :13:02.is sort of a bit of growing up from Dan Evans. Coming up against an

:13:03. > :13:11.established player and he is not afraid to impose himself. It is good

:13:12. > :13:16.to have a bit of fire on the court like this. You are slightly older

:13:17. > :13:26.than me. Who was your generation... ? Nastase. Jimmy Connors. I did not

:13:27. > :13:37.have many problems with him because he thrashed me a -- every time! He

:13:38. > :13:39.knew how to master the. Umpires, linesmen, the crowd, whatever it

:13:40. > :14:24.took to win, he would do it. He sort of hit the kicker there and

:14:25. > :14:30.slowed it down. He has been belting the seconds. He took a bit of a soft

:14:31. > :14:56.and clipped the top of the net. -- a bit of pace off.

:14:57. > :15:07.Such good racket head control. Melzer had him completely

:15:08. > :15:12.off-balance. He caught it late. He knew what he was doing with that

:15:13. > :15:18.ball and faded it out wide. Look how deep he got Melzer in. Impossible

:15:19. > :15:29.position. Followed it in as well. Good instincts. Great game.

:15:30. > :15:37.This is a real racket centre, this Queen's Club. They play real tennis

:15:38. > :15:39.and squash as well. They play racket long which is a mixture of four

:15:40. > :15:51.sports. That was great from Evans. Played a lot of squash as a junior,

:15:52. > :16:50.Dan. You can see it in his game. At 40-0, it might not be worth

:16:51. > :16:54.wasting a challenge on. UMPIRE: Mr Melzer challenging the

:16:55. > :17:19.call. He has lost his voice! Such a rich

:17:20. > :17:55.voice, but we are missing it. Interesting first-round match here

:17:56. > :18:03.at Queen's Club in West London. Day one of the main event. There was a

:18:04. > :18:09.Challenger last week in Nottingham that Marcos Baghdatis won. He is

:18:10. > :18:14.here. He is going to come in flying. A lot of matches already. He is

:18:15. > :18:22.playing Stanislas Wawrinka. That will be a tough match for Stan

:18:23. > :18:28.Wawrinka. Who do you expect to win? Well, presuming Marcos Baghdatis

:18:29. > :18:35.wins the first round, I would go with him. But it could be nasty. Not

:18:36. > :18:43.an easy match. The Australian Open champion, Stanislas Wawrinka. Myrdal

:18:44. > :18:49.injured his back in that. -- Nadal injured his back in that. It looked

:18:50. > :18:54.like his back was troubling him a little bit in the full set of the

:18:55. > :18:56.win over Djokovic. Not enough to hold him back. Unbelievable sporting

:18:57. > :18:59.achievement. win over Djokovic. Not enough to

:19:00. > :19:08.hold him back. Unbelievable I suppose winning eight French Opens.

:19:09. > :19:19.Nine! It is nonsense. It will never be beaten. It is impossible. Bjorn

:19:20. > :19:25.Borg won six with no losses. He will probably win another couple. I would

:19:26. > :19:27.equate that to somebody winning the football World Cup three times in a

:19:28. > :20:15.row. It has 135mph on the scoreboard at

:20:16. > :20:16.the end there. We are just recalibrating that. It was around

:20:17. > :20:30.about 120. We will figure it out. Some of the players that play at the

:20:31. > :20:35.Albert Hall in the senior invitation events would like that speed on the

:20:36. > :21:21.courts they are playing at! Generous.

:21:22. > :21:29.I would have expected Melzer to make that folly. No, I don't mechanise

:21:30. > :21:45.any of them! Average grass court players.

:21:46. > :21:54.So much tennis on the TV now. It is hard to remember what it was like

:21:55. > :21:57.when there was not much telly and McEnroe was scheduled. That was an

:21:58. > :22:15.appointment to view, it really was. Should have made that. Too many

:22:16. > :22:18.options. Could have lobbed, gone crosscourt. He picked the hardest,

:22:19. > :23:20.to go off backhand. We are going to have the poor umpire

:23:21. > :23:25.replaced. His voice has gone. He has had a lovely time with his family in

:23:26. > :23:28.Marbella for a couple of weeks, but he is really struggling to get the

:23:29. > :23:36.words out. That is not normally the case. This is from Jamie. On

:23:37. > :23:44.Twitter. Evans seems quite casual on court. Do you agree and is it good

:23:45. > :23:48.or bad? You can get in touch with us on Twitter. That is just the way he

:23:49. > :23:56.is. He has always been that way. It is fine. Every player has different

:23:57. > :24:00.mannerisms. You can act a certain way on court to please others which

:24:01. > :24:06.is not honest to yourself. You have to be who you are on the court. As

:24:07. > :24:10.long as it does not take on negative connotations where you are shaking

:24:11. > :24:18.your head and all of that stuff. He does not do that. Only

:24:19. > :24:23.occasionally. I think he is casual. The body works better if you are

:24:24. > :24:28.relaxed and casual. It is a boiling hot day here at Queen's Club. The

:24:29. > :24:43.hottest day of the year so far. Temperatures down there must be 27,

:24:44. > :25:07.20 8 degrees. Nearly air less. -- 27, 28 degrees.

:25:08. > :25:19.A controlled swipe from Melzer. He made sure the lines person was not

:25:20. > :25:49.there when he whacked it. You have to be careful.

:25:50. > :26:00.He got lucky! Just a little over a minute for that game. That is

:26:01. > :26:10.comfortable, isn't it? Getting into the heart of the match

:26:11. > :27:08.here after an hour of play. His first round matches at Queen's

:27:09. > :27:12.Club often dominated by errors. But this is a match between two players

:27:13. > :28:08.with great know-how on this surface. Day one that Queen's Club. Quality.

:28:09. > :28:15.Good move around there from Evans. He gambled. It is always dicey to

:28:16. > :28:20.move around on the second serve from a lefty because it is serving into

:28:21. > :28:28.your body. He got in nice and quick. He whacked the forehand. When you

:28:29. > :28:35.have a backhand like he has... Exactly. He can get more power on

:28:36. > :28:43.it. He knew exactly what he would do and he gambled and it was exactly

:28:44. > :28:49.the right tactic. That was a good serve. De go to serve for a lefty.

:28:50. > :28:52.If you try to cover it, they slip the serve down the middle. -- the go

:28:53. > :29:07.to serve. Right on that ball too. Here is

:29:08. > :29:57.playing a good match. Tried to come over and missed it.

:29:58. > :30:03.Good hold, Melzer. He was under pressure at 15-30. Did the right

:30:04. > :30:08.things. This is what you expect from him. Just outside the top 50 now.

:30:09. > :30:16.Started the year at number 60 and he did not start until Monte Carlo. He

:30:17. > :30:22.beat Marin Cilic and Dennis Isner in Rome. A couple of rounds of

:30:23. > :30:32.Dusseldorf. This is a quality player and a man with a doubles record to

:30:33. > :30:37.be proud of as well. He won the doubles at troubled and in 2010. The

:30:38. > :30:45.Mixed Doubles champion at Wimbledon in 2011. -- the doubles at

:30:46. > :30:51.Wimbledon. He married his doubles partner a year later. That was a

:30:52. > :30:58.good week! Did you ever think about playing with any ex-wives at all or

:30:59. > :31:06.anything like that it up you could have picked worse partners. Did you

:31:07. > :31:12.play mixed? We played a few matches. Not particularly well, I might add.

:31:13. > :32:00.You managed to win a couple of Mixed Doubles without her? Yeah.

:32:01. > :32:07.serve, Melzer. He did think about stopping. I wonder if it was in or

:32:08. > :32:08.out. It caught the back of the line, that second serve, so actually it

:32:09. > :33:44.was a brilliant second serve. He would like to take that point

:33:45. > :33:49.back because that was not a great serve from Melzer. He just sort of

:33:50. > :34:16.stabbed it back, he could have really hit that one.

:34:17. > :35:31.Very good half leave there from Melzer, but Evans just drilled the

:35:32. > :35:36.ball. Just got to keep that first serve the way it has been going. It

:35:37. > :36:00.is a mini-break now, still a long way to go in this tie-breaker.

:36:01. > :36:15.Live by the sword, die by the sword. You have just got to go for it. He

:36:16. > :36:19.is whacking that thing. It has kept Melzer from hurting him at all on

:36:20. > :36:26.his second serve, his statistics have been very good in that area.

:36:27. > :36:28.That was just buy one or two inches, it can happen. He has got to keep

:36:29. > :37:02.faith with it. Shame. This is when you have got to

:37:03. > :37:06.just calm it. No time now for that. That is bad news, two doubles in a

:37:07. > :37:25.row. They are a bit nervy, aren't they?

:37:26. > :39:02.Yes, that was a nice gift. He had the chance to come on in,

:39:03. > :39:08.early ball in the rally, after a pretty decent second serve. But as

:39:09. > :39:11.it is, Melzer took the net position and on a grass court, that is still

:39:12. > :39:44.the place to be. Just couldn't find the first serve,

:39:45. > :40:02.the last few points. I presume here that if Melzer does his serve out

:40:03. > :40:12.wide... Well closed, well played from a mini-break down. In that

:40:13. > :40:16.tie-break, Melzer wins you don't want to be harsh, you know it's not

:40:17. > :40:25.easy, but it's the difference between being 40, 50, 60 in the

:40:26. > :40:30.world, and what Dan Evans is, which is a player full of highlights,

:40:31. > :40:36.talent and work most of the time. The difference is so tiny. It is so

:40:37. > :40:40.tiny and you look at how well he has served in the match but

:40:41. > :40:51.unfortunately, when it counted, he missed the first -- the four first

:40:52. > :40:55.serves in a row. That was the difference in that tie-breaker when

:40:56. > :41:03.it really came down to it. Then he tried a top-spin lob on a huge

:41:04. > :41:08.point. There is a little dip there and it is enough for an experienced

:41:09. > :41:13.player to take command. If he were to lose this match, and he is by no

:41:14. > :41:18.means out of this, he will look back at it. That is what they have to

:41:19. > :41:23.analyse. You cannot do those sorts of things at crucial stages in the

:41:24. > :41:30.match, not if you are going to take that next level up in the game.

:41:31. > :41:34.Martin Stickley has e-mailed us - seeing the gamesmanship has got me

:41:35. > :41:43.thinking, has there ever been a big. Between players? Oh, yes, there are

:41:44. > :41:49.too many paragraphs to go into. Not so many these days. Plenty in the

:41:50. > :41:59.locker room. I saw a couple of classics in the old days, sometimes

:42:00. > :42:04.when players knew it was going to happen because we knew there was a

:42:05. > :42:07.navigation. On the match point everybody ran into the locker room

:42:08. > :42:17.and pretended we were getting ready for the next match that we didn't

:42:18. > :42:25.even have, and they got this player up against a wall and forgot he had

:42:26. > :42:38.a huge Italian bodyguard. That was the end of that but there were many

:42:39. > :42:49.of those occasions. There is a story about Bjorn Borg putting Ivan Lendl

:42:50. > :42:55.up against the wall. You think he was gentle and lovely all the

:42:56. > :44:33.time... The is! But I suppose it's the quiet ones, isn't it, John?

:44:34. > :44:41.Difficult moments now, trying to get over the disappointment. Dan Evans,

:44:42. > :44:47.British number two behind Andy Murray. Had a mini-break in the

:44:48. > :44:48.second set tie-breaker, having won the first. The game fell away a

:44:49. > :45:13.little bit. Look at that, Tony Roach in the

:45:14. > :45:19.white cap with Lleyton Hewitt. Lleyton Hewitt just loves this game,

:45:20. > :45:23.wants to play, loves the competition, refuses to accept that

:45:24. > :45:33.he hasn't got more to offer in the game. There was a little bit of talk

:45:34. > :45:35.around on Twitter about him coaching Andy Murray. That struck me as an

:45:36. > :46:24.interesting one. Right in the corner. We are seeing

:46:25. > :46:33.an exhibition of good, solid, professional matchplay here. It

:46:34. > :46:37.doesn't take a lot, when you are playing against someone who is that

:46:38. > :46:44.experienced, if you have a slight dip that is all it takes. That is

:46:45. > :46:49.what happened with Melzer, that tie-breaker, that slight glimmer of

:46:50. > :46:54.hope, the two double faults from Dan Evans got him ahead and after that

:46:55. > :47:00.he jumped on him. In that game, very aggressive with the returns, big

:47:01. > :47:03.forehand is taking over. Dan Evans has got to get his mind back. His

:47:04. > :49:12.game has dropped a little bit. Outstanding stretch from Evans. I

:49:13. > :49:18.thought he was out of this point. The slice just setting up a little

:49:19. > :49:24.bit, and it looks like he was gone on that forehand. Melzer did slip,

:49:25. > :49:56.but still, it was a fabulous recovery.

:49:57. > :50:04.Melzer will feel hard done by Bob Dan Evans is right back in it. To

:50:05. > :50:16.break back shows decent composure. Yes, a lot of credit therefore Dan

:50:17. > :50:19.Evans. -- there for Dan Evans. He could have easily lost some

:50:20. > :50:25.confidence after the tie-break but he bounced back and that was a well

:50:26. > :50:30.earned game. He has got to get his service back a little bit, it

:50:31. > :50:35.dropped off in that tie-breaker and the last game. He could do with a

:50:36. > :50:38.few body serves as well. He is not doing that as much as he was in the

:50:39. > :52:13.first part of the match. Well done! He has had two overheads

:52:14. > :52:18.in this match, both about one foot from the baseline and he has dealt

:52:19. > :52:29.with them both admirably. Pretty close to the baseline, that is a

:52:30. > :53:20.good overhead. Two first serves in a row as well, that's nice.

:53:21. > :53:26.That is an excellent two games. An excellent visit to that end of the

:53:27. > :53:34.court. Because when he turned up there, he was 1-0 down and a break.

:53:35. > :53:39.You have got to fight that feeling of satisfaction and keep the hunger,

:53:40. > :53:44.but I thought that was a very positive reaction to adversity. He

:53:45. > :53:52.is just getting this taping. It looks like talcum powder, maybe it

:53:53. > :54:16.is just pulling up a little bit. I assume that is just too help the

:54:17. > :54:30.tendon, John? What do you know about kinesio taping? Not much. Does he

:54:31. > :54:36.visit Andy Murray? I know Carl Edmund has spent time with Andy

:54:37. > :54:41.Murray in Miami around Christmas, New Year time. I think there will be

:54:42. > :54:44.a big queue for that. If you can train with Andy Murray for a few

:54:45. > :54:49.weeks in those conditions with his work ethic, you can only come out a

:54:50. > :54:55.better player. If he can somehow put himself to the front of that queue,

:54:56. > :54:59.it can do a lot for your game, that's for sure. He doesn't like it

:55:00. > :55:05.when people are late. It is the standards and value people ring. It

:55:06. > :55:12.is business, you are trained to play a certain amount of hours, rest

:55:13. > :55:16.periods, physical therapy. All of the input is fantastic, and you come

:55:17. > :55:29.out of their just knowing so much more about the game. --, out of

:55:30. > :56:18.there. I would like to see Evans on the

:56:19. > :56:22.backhand side coming over the ball a little bit. He doesn't want to

:56:23. > :56:29.become too reliant on slicing every ball. I think if he could flatten

:56:30. > :56:51.out the ball, he has a great backhand drive when he goes for it.

:56:52. > :57:01.I thought he had this folly, but the dip was just enough to beat him. He

:57:02. > :57:03.should have had that one. He snatched a little bit. The slight

:57:04. > :57:39.opening here for Evans. That is a poor volley. This is the

:57:40. > :57:45.height that you'd like a volley, right here. When you are in your

:57:46. > :58:40.zone, you shouldn't miss that one all day long. A big point too.

:58:41. > :58:49.Pretty smart hold. Melzer was not known for a very big serve, and that

:58:50. > :58:55.was a good base, but the ones before that were good serves, I think he

:58:56. > :58:59.got four in a row but it was the variation and accuracy. It doesn't

:59:00. > :59:03.have to be a big serve if it is in the corner, and that is what he did

:59:04. > :00:50.there. as a wildcard in 2008, quickly

:00:51. > :01:06.skinny slight teenager, Dan Evans. But there is some meet.

:01:07. > :01:13.That is the trouble again. So far behind the baseline. You have to hit

:01:14. > :01:45.an outright winner otherwise you are dead on the next shot.

:01:46. > :01:55.The 13th ace from Dan Evans. There was some question about whether if

:01:56. > :02:00.Scotland goes independent, would Andy Murray play for Scotland? And

:02:01. > :02:09.therefore, what would the Davis Cup team do? England would be James Ward

:02:10. > :02:14.and Dan Evans. What would they do in terms of... Where would you place

:02:15. > :02:20.the two teams Quetta not Britain are in the world group. They were

:02:21. > :02:26.quarterfinalists this year. -- where would you place the two teams? They

:02:27. > :02:31.cannot allow an extra space for Scotland and England. How would they

:02:32. > :02:41.do that? I don't know. But Scotland have a handy team. Leon Smith, the

:02:42. > :02:50.captain there. Edinburgh man. Colin Fleming in the doubles with Andy.

:02:51. > :03:00.That is all you need! That is a world group team right there. Sure

:03:01. > :03:09.is. England could have Jonny Marray, Ross Hutchins. Dan Evans and

:03:10. > :03:22.James Ward. Not bad. Home internationals would be good.

:03:23. > :03:30.He needs to take advantage of the second serves, Melzer. He is not

:03:31. > :04:32.getting many of them at the moment. Nice bonus.

:04:33. > :04:41.Two big chances there. Chance on the return and only passing shot. Club

:04:42. > :04:51.professional here at Queen's Club, Lee Childs. Good Somerset man.

:04:52. > :05:03.UMPIRE: Mr Evans challenging the call.

:05:04. > :05:16.Lee Childs can hit the ball hard. He played Nadal when he was 17.

:05:17. > :05:30.Good know-how. Just to finish that point on the home internationals,

:05:31. > :05:35.independence for Scotland, what would happen to the tennis teams,

:05:36. > :05:39.Wales and Northern Ireland, not sure who they will come up with. Where

:05:40. > :05:46.are they going to put all of these teams? Good luck to them figuring

:05:47. > :05:55.all of that out. We will cross that bridge when we get to it.

:05:56. > :07:02.I suppose they would have to do it on ranking.

:07:03. > :07:27.I just think that serve is not used enough, that body serve.

:07:28. > :07:45.This is certainly a moment in this match. 3-3, 30-30.

:07:46. > :07:51.Looks wide. UMPIRE: Mr Melzer challenging the

:07:52. > :07:59.call. The ball is called in. Did it catch

:08:00. > :08:30.a bit? They will be looking at these screens. It did.

:08:31. > :08:50.APPLAUSE Melzer, that is the death stare. He

:08:51. > :08:58.is very, very cross with our Dan. What is the cross about? Here's just

:08:59. > :09:04.demonstrating his passion to win. Do you think it is easy playing Melzer

:09:05. > :09:11.in Austria? Here's just cross about missing the return and perhaps an

:09:12. > :09:14.imagined disrespect. Here's just shouting to get himself going. I

:09:15. > :09:21.thought that was good reaction from Evans. I am not having a go at him,

:09:22. > :09:29.but I'm sure that is what Melzer is thinking. When you are a more

:09:30. > :09:33.experienced player, you give a look. But Dan did not even look at him. It

:09:34. > :09:40.is no good if the other person is not seeing it. That was all...

:09:41. > :09:53.Looked nice, camera wise. But it did not do too much. A wasted death

:09:54. > :09:59.stare! You can only summon up that sort of looked a couple of times

:10:00. > :10:02.over the course of the match. You will exhaust yourself. They have

:10:03. > :10:06.been at it for much of this match which is now an hour and three

:10:07. > :10:09.quarters old. Thoroughly entertaining. Lleyton Hewitt still

:10:10. > :10:29.to come. Good first day's play. Thought he might just smack one at

:10:30. > :10:56.him again and see if he gets another of those stares.

:10:57. > :11:02.If Melzer misses his first serve, Evans might try to get under his

:11:03. > :11:19.skin here a bit. Good play. Just that chip return, got to be a

:11:20. > :11:22.foot lower than that. Tough to fit that shot. Your timing has got to be

:11:23. > :11:36.precise. -- tough to hit. The East stand one. North stand now.

:11:37. > :13:15.Good catch. That is not the shot. Not good shot

:13:16. > :13:23.selection from that distance on the court. Or the drop shot too. Badly

:13:24. > :13:31.played point. Be careful now. This must end of the set and match. You

:13:32. > :13:36.cannot mess around. What a recovery. 15 aces from Dan Evans. That is

:13:37. > :13:41.tremendous serving. I would be surprised if he has ever served that

:13:42. > :13:59.many in a match. I might be wrong, but I doubt it.

:14:00. > :14:06.He has not passed very well on his backhand side. He has missed a lot

:14:07. > :14:07.of those opportunities. It is normally a really good part of his

:14:08. > :14:39.game. Memories of Jimmy Connors. He really

:14:40. > :14:45.got through that. Flat as a pancake. Hit the grass and shot through.

:14:46. > :15:07.Suddenly, it is a break point at 4-4. Decider.

:15:08. > :15:15.He has just hit the best backhand of the whole match. That was a slice

:15:16. > :15:22.shove. Five feet macro from the baseline. Look at that shot. -- 5ft

:15:23. > :15:48.from the baseline. That of chest beating from Melzer

:15:49. > :15:50.and no reward. He played a very fine break point. He will be disappointed

:15:51. > :16:20.if he loses this game. That is a tremendous escape from Dan

:16:21. > :16:31.Evans. He really hit maybe a one in ten backhand. Generous. One in 20?

:16:32. > :16:35.He was gone at that point. That could have saved him the whole

:16:36. > :16:40.match. That was basically match point against him. Tremendous

:16:41. > :16:44.effort. Did well to hang in on that game. If he can get through it, this

:16:45. > :16:50.match will be eight Amanda 's boost. Coming through a match like

:16:51. > :16:56.this against an experienced player who has thrown everything at him...

:16:57. > :17:04.-- this match will be a tremendous boost. These results are on a 12

:17:05. > :17:08.month basis. These computer points will drop off next Monday from last

:17:09. > :17:19.year. It will be replaced by this year. That is right. Jarko Nieminen

:17:20. > :17:28.and others. This will not be on his mind now. He is just playing the

:17:29. > :17:33.match. Tremendous. You get to see ropey stuff on day one. People are

:17:34. > :17:37.nervous about movement of them. But they have been diving around here.

:17:38. > :17:40.The quality has been excellent from the first point.

:17:41. > :18:30.He has not really unleashed this shot too many times. That one was

:18:31. > :18:57.beautifully struck. Had his man beat! What a pity.

:18:58. > :18:59.Melzer slipped. Anything in the court and it would have been a

:19:00. > :19:20.winner. Just drifted wide. Ninth ace for Melzer. 16 for Dan

:19:21. > :19:36.Evans. Double figures brings home the game

:19:37. > :19:44.and parity in the decider. -- brings him.

:19:45. > :19:52.James Ward, the British number three, already a winner on this

:19:53. > :19:56.court today. Blaz Rola was his victim. Dan Evans is 5-5 against

:19:57. > :20:11.Melzer of Austria. The winner of this match plays big

:20:12. > :20:13.Kevin Anderson, the South African, number seven seed. Demanding on a

:20:14. > :20:27.grass court, that one. Demanding on any surface! Kevin

:20:28. > :21:42.Anderson is a world-class player now. Always nasty to play against.

:21:43. > :22:01.This court has already been nicely scarred from the play and the

:22:02. > :22:07.sliding. This is mostly done. Right foot down. -- nicely done. Fluidity

:22:08. > :22:51.of movement has been a feature of his game today.

:22:52. > :23:00.UMPIRE: Mr Evans is challenging the call.

:23:01. > :23:07.The umpire was very quick to put his finger up and say he thought the

:23:08. > :23:10.ball is out and he is on it. His voice might not be 100%, but his

:23:11. > :23:26.eyes are. UMPIRE: Mr Evans has one challenge

:23:27. > :25:04.remaining. He has found some useful backhand returns, Melzer.

:25:05. > :25:14.The grand stroke from Evans on the forehand. -- the ground stroke. If

:25:15. > :25:21.you are not actually with it, he punishes you on the next ball. He

:25:22. > :25:23.hit the forehand OK, Dan Evans, but it was not in the right place. Comes

:25:24. > :25:35.belting back and he is in trouble. That is what has got him out of a

:25:36. > :25:53.troubled though, his first serve, aces. -- a lot of trouble.

:25:54. > :26:07.It is a six minute game and Dan Evans gets out of it. Did not face a

:26:08. > :26:13.break point in that game but it felt dangerous. He had 40-15 and Melzer

:26:14. > :26:22.came back and was threatening. It is a fine holdall serve. He will go to

:26:23. > :26:27.the tie-break. He needs to pick up a point or two. You have got to try

:26:28. > :26:35.and get into the game to start with on a grass court. That is absolutely

:26:36. > :26:40.right. One or two grimaces from Dan Evans around the strapping on his

:26:41. > :26:47.left knee. Not being attended to. No time for that. One more game and a

:26:48. > :26:50.tie-break, whatever happens. It has been an impressive performance

:26:51. > :26:58.because with 7000 people here and home fans and TV watching as well,

:26:59. > :27:06.it is a big match for Dan Evans. He loves playing on grass courts. It

:27:07. > :27:11.was impressive also in the second set tie-break when he served the two

:27:12. > :27:14.doubles and lost the set and lost the first game of the third. It was

:27:15. > :27:21.worrying. You thought he might go away easily. But he did not. He

:27:22. > :27:25.broke right back. He has held serve the whole way through. Melzer has

:27:26. > :28:06.been returning well too. Good effort.

:28:07. > :28:17.APPLAUSE That is a welcome structured point.

:28:18. > :28:24.-- welcome structured. Took charge on the return of serve. Then the

:28:25. > :28:26.drop shot. Moved up in the right position. Volleys into the open

:28:27. > :28:41.court. Had more time on that one. He was

:28:42. > :28:45.almost there too soon. Change of pace from Melzer. But of a bluff

:28:46. > :29:22.serve and he got away with it. Evans would have taken this

:29:23. > :30:02.position, 30-30, at the start of this game.

:30:03. > :30:12.He did well to get himself back into this rally. He was in trouble on a

:30:13. > :30:13.few occasions. He had a go at the highest point of the net, and didn't

:30:14. > :31:40.make it. That's going in! That could bring

:31:41. > :31:46.down rain, that lob! The approach to Heathrow is about 12 miles to the

:31:47. > :31:51.left. That one would have worried them temporarily. So it is a

:31:52. > :31:52.tie-break to see who goes through to play Kevin Anderson in the second

:31:53. > :33:07.round. He stood up to that second serve,

:33:08. > :33:27.didn't he? Just unable to find the right height.

:33:28. > :33:38.Oh, yes, this time. Threading the needle, Dan Evans with a mini-break.

:33:39. > :33:45.That was fine anticipation. The execution of the drop volley was not

:33:46. > :33:47.great, but Evans was on it. He had the wherewithal to find the right

:33:48. > :34:05.shot. That is talent. He did well to manoeuvre his feet,

:34:06. > :34:29.get out of the way of the ball. The ball came at him quickly.

:34:30. > :34:36.How different this from the second set breaker where Dan Evans got his

:34:37. > :34:38.nose in front and double-faulted twice. This time two good points on

:34:39. > :35:46.his own serve, in control. He has wrapped that around the

:35:47. > :35:53.frame. Dan Evans really is closing in on this victory against a much

:35:54. > :35:59.higher ranked man. Melzer has not been able to get a first serve, and

:36:00. > :36:22.looked the edgier one. That is very well handled.

:36:23. > :36:40.Tremendous half-volley, wasn't it? Unbelievable.

:36:41. > :36:57.It has been a grand day of day one at the Queen's Club. Dan Evans

:36:58. > :37:04.disposes of Jurgen Melzer, a proven performer at the highest level. What

:37:05. > :37:08.a start here. Another wildcard decision to be applauded. What a

:37:09. > :37:13.classy performance that was, what a fabulous first round match as well.

:37:14. > :37:19.That really was an outstanding effort, from blowing that second set

:37:20. > :37:24.in the tie-breaker, he got tight on those two double faults in a row.

:37:25. > :37:36.Goes down an early break in the third and you could easily imagine

:37:37. > :37:43.him... He kept his nerve, had 17 aces. I'm not sure he has had 17

:37:44. > :37:51.aces in a year, hasn't he? He stuck to his game plan, even after that

:37:52. > :37:59.break in the second set. He took risks, but it paid off. We have seen

:38:00. > :38:07.him perform at such a high level in the Australian Open last year.

:38:08. > :38:11.Earlier this year, a semifinalist as well, so it is not a surprise when

:38:12. > :38:17.he wins these sorts of matches but it is a delight. It is just further

:38:18. > :38:21.evidence of how good he can be. He doesn't need convincing, he knows he

:38:22. > :38:28.has a gift to play the game, and he is the root of the second round to

:38:29. > :38:30.play Anderson. Let's get his thoughts.

:38:31. > :38:38.Quite a victory, what were the keys to that one? Just staying... Holding

:38:39. > :38:43.my serve. The second set was tight, with both broke each other, as we

:38:44. > :38:50.did in the first so I had to keep holding on to my serve and trying to

:38:51. > :38:55.get the points on his serve. I always get the impression you love

:38:56. > :39:01.the big stage, do you enjoy playing here? Yes, days like today, playing

:39:02. > :39:06.a guy who has been as high is that in the world, you have to go out

:39:07. > :39:12.there and enjoy it. Obviously I want to win, and I have just got to enjoy

:39:13. > :39:19.it and go out there and fight. That's what I did, I got the win.

:39:20. > :39:23.You had a good run in Zagreb earlier this season, and it must give you

:39:24. > :39:29.the belief you can be a permanent fixture in the top 101-day? Yes,

:39:30. > :39:34.definitely, that is what all the Brits are trying to do and I think

:39:35. > :39:39.we are getting closer. I am here today to try and win and I will come

:39:40. > :39:43.out on Wednesday and do the same. What are you expecting from Kevin

:39:44. > :39:49.Anderson, apart from serves coming down from a great height. I have

:39:50. > :39:56.played him before and lost so it can only get better. Well done today.

:39:57. > :40:01.Thank you. Very well done, particularly that

:40:02. > :40:06.last tie-break, super from Dan Evans. He takes on Kevin Anderson

:40:07. > :40:13.tomorrow and it has been a terrific day for British tennis so far on

:40:14. > :40:21.Centre Court. Just before Dan Evans won, James Ward went through in

:40:22. > :40:27.straight sets against Blaz Rola. He will take on his next opponent

:40:28. > :40:38.tomorrow. Coming up next on the Centre Court, Lleyton Hewitt, always

:40:39. > :41:22.great to watch. Other results to bring you:

:41:23. > :41:30.The Frenchman will play Andy Murray on Wednesday, and it has been a busy

:41:31. > :41:41.day for him out this afternoon, practising with Tomas Berdych. I say

:41:42. > :41:44.a busy day, because he was out earlier with another player so he is

:41:45. > :41:48.making the most of the weather, trying to get used to the grass

:41:49. > :42:09.court. The big news is that our lamer as -- Amelie Mauresmo, his new

:42:10. > :42:16.coach, will be coming out tomorrow. Breaking with tradition, taking on a

:42:17. > :42:21.female coach. Andrew Castle has joined us here. He grind it out and

:42:22. > :42:31.played a really good tie-break, didn't he? Yes, to come back in that

:42:32. > :42:39.situation is not easy. We have said this a lot, he is 24 years old now.

:42:40. > :42:42.This guy is gifted. We saw the way he threaded that back down the line,

:42:43. > :42:47.I don't know what goes on in his head but I know that he is gifted,

:42:48. > :42:52.he has talent and can get the job done at the highest level. 50, 68 in

:42:53. > :43:00.the world, you can definitely see that. He proved it last year at the

:43:01. > :43:04.US Open. Exactly, will talk about potential, and intellectually I'm

:43:05. > :43:10.sure he looks at it and says I do this well and this well, and I guess

:43:11. > :43:14.so but so much of it comes down to self belief, in your subconscious

:43:15. > :43:22.almost, whether you believe that you should be at a certain level. I

:43:23. > :43:30.think that determines so much of what happens. It is a matter of just

:43:31. > :43:36.how many wins it takes for Dan Evans to see... Why not? Why not me in the

:43:37. > :43:38.top 70 of the world because as we said, he has so much physical

:43:39. > :43:41.talent. top 70 of the world because as we

:43:42. > :43:42.said, You have been reading out some questions from people and we do

:43:43. > :43:46.said, You have been reading out some questions from people and want you

:43:47. > :43:54.to get in touch with us while we are the this week. If you want to

:43:55. > :43:57.contact the team, just use the hashtag.

:43:58. > :44:00.the this week. If you want to contact the team, just use We do our

:44:01. > :44:04.best. In the studio we cannot hide, we look through the media guidance.

:44:05. > :44:11.Some of those questions are difficult! Keep them coming in, we

:44:12. > :44:15.love to hear from you. Let's look back to what was a glorious French

:44:16. > :44:21.Open for the men and women, but particularly that final four Rafael

:44:22. > :44:27.Nadal. We talked about him but how does Djokovic comeback from that? He

:44:28. > :44:32.has lost five of the last six Grand Slam finals that he has been in. He

:44:33. > :44:39.did everything, he gives everything to get into that position to win a

:44:40. > :44:43.Grand Slam, and somehow it is not happening for him. That is why Boris

:44:44. > :44:49.Becker was brought in to work on the big points. The trouble is for

:44:50. > :44:54.Djokovic, Rafael Nadal is the problem. He is the greatest I have

:44:55. > :45:00.ever seen on a clay court and may be the greatest player ever to play the

:45:01. > :45:08.game. I didn't recognise Djokovic there. Going into that match, he had

:45:09. > :45:13.won the last four on clay? I think he had Rafael Nadal's measure.

:45:14. > :45:19.Djokovic knows how to dismantle his game. We have seen it in number of

:45:20. > :45:24.times, but in the big arena, Djokovic has to look at himself and

:45:25. > :45:29.say, he has got me again and that is depressing, but Djokovic will be

:45:30. > :45:32.back. In some ways I feel he is possibly the favourite for

:45:33. > :45:39.Wimbledon, which Rafael Nadal has struggled with. Who is the

:45:40. > :45:45.favourite, do you think? I think Djokovic. I thought Rafael Nadal

:45:46. > :45:49.would be the favourite because he is playing so well again. He just

:45:50. > :45:54.didn't look at ease on the grass again. I don't know if there is an

:45:55. > :45:59.issue with his knees. Andy Murray hasn't lost on a grass court since

:46:00. > :46:06.2012, why don't we stick with the defending champion? You see it that

:46:07. > :46:11.way? It is really a difficult choice to pick a favourite between those

:46:12. > :46:22.three. It has got to be one of them, I think. Joint favourites. I

:46:23. > :46:26.think Grigor Dimitrov will search through this year. This is one of

:46:27. > :46:32.the old favourites back again, Lleyton Hewitt. 33 years of age now,

:46:33. > :46:38.but still enjoying being out there. He loves competing. Let's hear from

:46:39. > :46:44.him. I was looking earlier today, this is

:46:45. > :46:48.your 15th time here. It is extraordinary, isn't it? I have

:46:49. > :46:53.always enjoyed coming back here and I had a lot of success early in my

:46:54. > :46:59.career here as well so it is one of my favourite stops. When you arrive,

:47:00. > :47:04.everything seems to click. A lot has got to do with the surface and

:47:05. > :47:09.coming onto a grass court. I feel pretty comfortable, it is probably

:47:10. > :47:14.my favourite surface, especially now later in my career. I had a lot of

:47:15. > :47:22.success in the early stage of my career and won it four times. I was

:47:23. > :47:26.reading this morning that you have got metal in your foot from all of

:47:27. > :47:31.the surgeries you have hard and the repair work that has been required

:47:32. > :47:38.over the course of time you have been playing. What keeps you doing

:47:39. > :47:42.this? I still feel motivated. Obviously the majors are big part of

:47:43. > :47:49.it, especially Wimbledon and the Australian Open. Still knowing, I

:47:50. > :47:53.guess, to come through those surgeries, I wasn't sure if I would

:47:54. > :47:59.be able to come out and compete again, especially against the top

:48:00. > :48:06.guys in the world. I had a great time in Brisbane, a tournament I had

:48:07. > :48:12.never won before in Brisbane, and I won against Roger Federer so that

:48:13. > :48:18.gives me a lot of confidence. I suppose you are long-time retired,

:48:19. > :48:22.aren't you? I remember your sun coming out onto the court last year,

:48:23. > :48:23.you're getting a chance for them to enjoy

:48:24. > :48:27.coming out onto the court last year, you're getting a chance for your

:48:28. > :48:33.career as well. Yes, it is a lot of fun. My kids understand what I do.

:48:34. > :48:38.My little boy is five now, he loves all kinds of sport but he loves

:48:39. > :48:43.tennis, so having him come out onto the court is fun. As you said, you

:48:44. > :48:50.are retired for an awfully long time. Those few years where I had

:48:51. > :48:54.five surgeries within four years, I spent a lot of time on the sidelines

:48:55. > :49:00.and that freshens you up mentally. If I wasn't motivated to go out and

:49:01. > :49:05.do the hard work, I wouldn't be here. You are spanning generations.

:49:06. > :49:12.The first time I ever saw you playing was against Andre Agassi,

:49:13. > :49:17.going back 16 years. You have gone through Roger Federer's dominance,

:49:18. > :49:23.then you topped the rankings, then Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray. I expect

:49:24. > :49:28.you are in a position to compare the generations. Yes, I don't think it

:49:29. > :49:33.is an easy question for anyone. Roger Federer was so dominant for so

:49:34. > :49:42.long so to compare anyone to him is difficult because I saw him at his

:49:43. > :49:50.absolute best. He was amazing. Obviously his dominance in Grand

:49:51. > :49:54.Slam finals. Obviously I've played Peter and Andre Agassi, then Rafael

:49:55. > :49:59.Nadal and Roger Federer took the game to a new level. It has been

:50:00. > :50:07.amazing how consistent they have been. He was right at the top of his

:50:08. > :50:12.game in the early 2000s and he was a wonderful competitor. When you think

:50:13. > :50:16.he was playing against the likes of Pete Sampras and that lot, then he

:50:17. > :50:22.moved into the Roger Federer era and went through that, and still loves

:50:23. > :50:27.to play. That is the key. And we love to watch him, so let's join

:50:28. > :50:31.this match. We are going to stay with it through until six o'clock

:50:32. > :50:39.but after that it will go on to the red button.

:50:40. > :50:43.The ultimate competitor, I think is a good way of describing Lleyton

:50:44. > :50:46.Hewitt. Every single point in his long career he has fought for, no

:50:47. > :51:03.matter the state of the match. Didn't have to do too much fighting

:51:04. > :51:27.there. This may well be a tall order for Traver.

:51:28. > :51:48.Step into the unknown for both these two.

:51:49. > :52:14.Traver's first point, the gift. -- a gift. Lleyton Hewitt holds, no

:52:15. > :52:20.damage done to Traver, but it does happen on the first day. The court

:52:21. > :52:25.is so green and fresh that it is slippery. Exactly right, and this is

:52:26. > :52:31.a good example of a guy just trying to dig in and get back into court a

:52:32. > :52:38.little too quickly. Once your legs are out that far from your centre of

:52:39. > :52:44.gravity, you are history. I mentioned, he is a good clay court

:52:45. > :52:52.player, and he reached the semifinal in Portugal. This is a different

:52:53. > :52:53.thing on the grass against one of the great grass court players of all

:52:54. > :53:08.time. Even if he is not quite the beast of

:53:09. > :53:30.old, Lleyton Hewitt, he has found a good bit of his old form.

:53:31. > :53:39.Even when Lleyton Hewitt is not in good form, he is always a threat. He

:53:40. > :54:38.is one of these guys who can conjure good results out of thin air.

:54:39. > :55:03.A decent bit of poke in that serve, when it works.

:55:04. > :55:14.So, the first break point opportunity for Lleyton Hewitt.

:55:15. > :55:16.Yes, it wasn't a bad idea but Hewitt puts pressure on opponents to play

:55:17. > :55:33.close to the lines. A rather feeble looking shot from

:55:34. > :55:46.Traver, and the first break from Lleyton Hewitt. This is Lleyton

:55:47. > :55:52.Hewitt's 15th appearance at Queen's, a four-time champion. Yes, and way

:55:53. > :56:12.back when. Grass court tennis has emerged

:56:13. > :56:18.almost with clay court tennis, they are very similar animals now, and

:56:19. > :56:49.so... Well, there is no such thing as Bonnie -- bunnies on any surface

:56:50. > :57:19.now. Even Ivo Karlovi? wins matches on clay now!

:57:20. > :58:49.Traver will have three chances to break back.

:58:50. > :58:59.A cagey point, played from the baseline. A wasted chance for

:59:00. > :59:04.Traver. Yes, I'm not quite sure how he missed the ball from such a huge

:59:05. > :59:08.margin. Of course, he probably thought, how am I going to win this

:59:09. > :59:14.point because I'm certainly not going to do it by out slicing

:59:15. > :59:46.Hewitt. Still break point. Those break points have come and

:59:47. > :00:11.gone. Hewitt starting to land his first

:00:12. > :00:32.serve. It has been a scrappy old game so far.

:00:33. > :00:43.Very grateful for the hold, just as the sun comes out. Reinforces the

:00:44. > :00:53.break of serve. All is right in Hewitt's world. He has got his loyal

:00:54. > :01:02.band of followers with him. Looking down in the players' box. His wife

:01:03. > :01:15.is there. Tony Roach is there as well, in the cap. Long-time coach

:01:16. > :01:21.Tony Roach. A poem for you! What a great player he was. French Open

:01:22. > :01:26.champion in singles. Won the doubles at dozens of grand slam events. Won

:01:27. > :01:38.Wimbledon five times. The great coach. The coach of Ivan Lendl,

:01:39. > :01:44.Roger Federer. That is a decent stable. It is interesting to watch

:01:45. > :01:49.Lleyton Hewitt play because it was this tournament a couple of years

:01:50. > :01:59.ago when he came back after the operation. He has got a bionic left

:02:00. > :02:04.toe. It does not move. He has lost any mobility. But it now means he

:02:05. > :02:10.can play tennis. This is his second career, given another chance. I am

:02:11. > :02:19.large, he is taking it. -- by and large. Nicely done.

:02:20. > :02:29.It is difficult. I am sure it must be physically demanding on Hewitt

:02:30. > :02:30.when he gets deeper into an event, especially the best of five set

:02:31. > :02:35.events. But over three sets, he is still a

:02:36. > :03:04.rough customer. Let me rephrase that. Over five

:03:05. > :03:11.sets, he is still a rough customer. When you play two, three, four, five

:03:12. > :03:13.set matches, that is when the demands physically start to work on

:03:14. > :04:21.a guy like Hewitt. First game on the board for the

:04:22. > :04:27.Spaniard. An uncharacteristic unforced error from Hewitt off the

:04:28. > :04:31.two hander. That point showed us a little of why he has been so

:04:32. > :04:36.difficult to beat over the years. Make so many returns of serve. Like

:04:37. > :05:04.a backboard. Extraordinary sliding marks on the

:05:05. > :05:07.court. One has gone about 20ft. There is another one! A couple of

:05:08. > :05:15.times he has gone down in that corner. Yeah, the slice serve out

:05:16. > :05:18.wide is creating so much havoc. Again, Gimeno-Traver trying to put

:05:19. > :05:45.on the brakes too quickly. They were different shoes for the

:05:46. > :05:48.grass court season. He is not sure about his footing just yet -- they

:05:49. > :06:18.were different shoes. Of course, Andrew, we were talking

:06:19. > :06:26.earlier about the different skills required to be successful on each of

:06:27. > :06:30.the surfaces and how they have melded into an almost similar planes

:06:31. > :06:46.go daddy back -- playing style. But of course the one constant is

:06:47. > :06:51.that regardless of what surface you are playing on, you have to be able

:06:52. > :06:54.to get around the court. Gimeno-Traver, a guy who is

:06:55. > :07:00.certainly very quick and athletic, he has not played enough on this

:07:01. > :07:08.surface to know when to slide and when to stop. He is struggling

:07:09. > :07:16.because of it right now. Hewitt holds. It is interesting. You talk

:07:17. > :07:23.about the different surfaces becoming quite a lot closer compared

:07:24. > :07:27.to your day. But thinking about Bjorn Borg, going from the French to

:07:28. > :07:34.winning Wimbledon, it was extraordinary. It was such an

:07:35. > :07:40.incredible change, really, from the slow clay courts to the very fast

:07:41. > :07:48.grass courts. As Wimbledon wore on and still does, I think, the Centre

:07:49. > :07:52.Court got slower. As the tournament went on, things became a little bit

:07:53. > :08:03.easier for a baseliner like Bjorn Borg. But of course, the sort of

:08:04. > :08:10.sliding but we used to see all of the time has largely gone out of the

:08:11. > :08:14.game. We see a couple of really long skid marks here. I think it was

:08:15. > :08:18.Jurgen Melzer who laid down most of those tracks today. But it is only

:08:19. > :08:26.when the grass is still quite wet, quite damp, that is when you see

:08:27. > :08:31.guys sliding. They have covers over the court every night. You never

:08:32. > :08:39.show up to the courts and see, it has rained overnight, I will have to

:08:40. > :08:42.slide around. They are always dry. Heroes Gimeno-Traver serving. --

:08:43. > :10:32.here is. Australian. He will try to cut those

:10:33. > :10:41.out as the match goes on. But Ben is the service game, and ace. If you

:10:42. > :10:53.can consistently land the first serve, he has a chance. It is a hard

:10:54. > :10:57.serve to return. Yeah and generally speaking, that is the key to winning

:10:58. > :11:01.on just about any surface. If you can land your first serve, you have

:11:02. > :11:16.a great chance of holding. Gimeno-Traver certainly has to take

:11:17. > :11:21.the chances on Hewitt's second serve. He has been given a few of

:11:22. > :11:30.those that the moment. -- at the moment.

:11:31. > :11:39.He will know. He will get some chances. Hewitt has never been one

:11:40. > :11:45.of these guys that has made 65% of his first serves. He is often down

:11:46. > :11:47.around the 50% mark. When he does get his first serve in, it is very

:11:48. > :12:08.effective. Well done. First little cry of, come

:12:09. > :12:14.on! Hewitt perhaps allowed Gimeno-Traver to stay in the rally.

:12:15. > :12:18.Of course, the Aussie covers the net so well. Can just hit a defensive

:12:19. > :13:06.volley and say, all right, what are you going to do now?

:13:07. > :13:16.There is a hole for Hewitt. He is moving through the first set fairly

:13:17. > :13:21.comfortably. Not having to do too much at the moment. Not at his very

:13:22. > :13:37.best, but good enough to be keeping Gimeno-Traver at bay. He is 28 now,

:13:38. > :13:41.Gimeno-Traver. World ranking 99. Danger of slipping out of the top

:13:42. > :13:46.100. Four out of the five seasons, he has finished within the top 75. A

:13:47. > :13:53.player of some quality. The success has been built on the red surfaces.

:13:54. > :14:03.He has twice played here before and has twice lost in the first round. A

:14:04. > :14:11.shiny new racket will help. That is the hope, anyway.

:14:12. > :14:19.The tennis gods did not really looked down on Gimeno-Traver that

:14:20. > :14:28.favourably. It is a difficult first round match for him. Hewitt carries

:14:29. > :14:35.a lot of the things Gimeno-Traver does well. He is a power player, he

:14:36. > :14:48.likes to go for flashy winners. Of course, Hewitt is so great at

:14:49. > :14:52.defending. Knox a lot of them back. His greater experience on this

:14:53. > :14:57.surface allows him to outmanoeuvre him. New racket for the Spaniard and

:14:58. > :15:17.new balls. Done by the bounce. Once again,

:15:18. > :15:30.bounced off the service line and checked.

:15:31. > :15:36.We have put men on the moon, can't we come up with a substance, a white

:15:37. > :15:47.looking substance, something that does not make the ball stop on top

:15:48. > :15:52.of it? You are not a conspiracy theorist then? We made it look like

:15:53. > :16:00.we landed men on the moon. That is an achievement in itself.

:16:01. > :16:15.Lovely touch at the end. A well crafted point by Gimeno-Traver.

:16:16. > :16:58.He gives it a SWAT. The speed gun is coming and going. Sometimes it

:16:59. > :17:06.works, sometimes it doesn't. Two big serves. That was 131mph. Still got a

:17:07. > :17:15.chance in this first set, Gimeno-Traver. I think it was with

:17:16. > :17:22.Elliott Gould, the film about them faking it Chris at before my time

:17:23. > :17:31.sorry. That was the 70s! -- about them faking it? Hewitt serving for

:17:32. > :17:38.the first set. There are people at home screaming at the television

:17:39. > :18:12.set, stop rambling and that the name of the film was Capricorn 1.

:18:13. > :18:22.Wow. Now is the time. Lleyton Hewitt really I am sure is feeling just a

:18:23. > :18:25.bit of pressure. If he does not hold serve this game, Gimeno-Traver is

:18:26. > :18:56.starting to find his feet a little. Just giving Hewitt pause for thought

:18:57. > :19:33.here. The skies are darkening just a

:19:34. > :19:55.little bit. Playing these big points well.

:19:56. > :20:01.Gimeno-Traver, I don't think he challenged or clear now. The umpire

:20:02. > :20:13.is explaining that to him. UMPIRE: Gimeno-Traver is challenging

:20:14. > :20:17.the call. The ball was called in. Lleyton Hewitt is explaining that.

:20:18. > :20:21.He said, you have to challenge in a timely manner. Gimeno-Traver had a

:20:22. > :20:31.long look and a long think about things.

:20:32. > :20:37.Hewitt has the first set and he has said fairly comfortably. Signs that

:20:38. > :20:43.Gimeno-Traver was beginning to find his feet. Moving on fairly nicely,

:20:44. > :20:45.winning the first set 6-3. Looking ahead to the rest of the tournament

:20:46. > :21:00.and Wimbledon and the World Cup. What really separates the great from

:21:01. > :21:11.the blood? Style? Of course. -- from the good? Flare across a -- flare?

:21:12. > :21:16.Passion? Learn from your mistakes? Always think about what you missed.

:21:17. > :21:24.Never be satisfied with what you have done. Whatever you do, do it

:21:25. > :21:29.with your heart. Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard! I never thought

:21:30. > :21:39.about what I could get out of football, I just wanted to play.

:21:40. > :21:44.SUE BARKER: Gary Lineker will be here on Wednesday night with a full

:21:45. > :21:51.preview of the tournament. That is Wednesday night at 10:35pm on BBC

:21:52. > :21:56.One HD. Not long to wait. The preview on Wednesday, the tournament

:21:57. > :22:02.starts on Thursday. Are you excited about the US's

:22:03. > :22:09.chances in the World Cup? Not entirely. Thanks are asking. You are

:22:10. > :22:16.welcome. You must be very excited about England's chances of course!

:22:17. > :22:25.As a British citizen, right? Anyway, here we are. Hewitt and

:22:26. > :22:30.Gimeno-Traver. Let us leave this crazy football chat and move on.

:22:31. > :22:36.Hewitt took the first set with some comfort. But never really gave us

:22:37. > :22:42.the impression he was firing on all cylinders. Gimeno-Traver not

:22:43. > :23:33.offering an enormous amount of resistance.

:23:34. > :23:39.Hewitt, an enormous net cord. He will need fortune against

:23:40. > :23:50.Gimeno-Traver. Three break points at the start of

:23:51. > :24:09.the second set. And very, very easily taken. Lleyton

:24:10. > :24:19.Hewitt has the break at the start of the second set. This match may

:24:20. > :24:26.quickly slip away from Querrey. -- from Gimeno-Traver. The only thing

:24:27. > :24:32.that might stop Lleyton Hewitt's progress is rain. My friend says no

:24:33. > :24:38.rain until nine o'clock. You have to believe that, don't you? -- my

:24:39. > :24:49.phone. It is a little on the dreary side wall of a sudden. Still warm.

:24:50. > :24:57.The winner of this will play Feliciano Lopez. Or Lajovic. They

:24:58. > :25:22.are on court after this. It is funny. Gimeno-Traver appeared

:25:23. > :25:26.to be showing signs of getting into the match towards the end of the

:25:27. > :25:31.first set. Did not break through. Essentially, he donated the first

:25:32. > :26:02.service game in the second. Now he is in real trouble.

:26:03. > :26:44.You can see why he is comfortable on clay courts as well. He has got some

:26:45. > :27:58.power in that shoulder. Well played. The show pony finish.

:27:59. > :28:04.It was. I like this. Nice touch. Not quite the extraordinary shot of

:28:05. > :28:18.crime on fees. But getting there. -- shot of Gael Monfils.

:28:19. > :28:29.Just opened up the court. The wide serve has been money for Lleyton

:28:30. > :29:02.Hewitt today. So effective. The slice out on the deuce court.

:29:03. > :29:10.Hewitt holds. There was half a chance for Gimeno-Traver but he

:29:11. > :29:18.could not take it. I can see just a few umbrellas starting to go up. Not

:29:19. > :31:01.for the sun anymore. Don't say a word.

:31:02. > :31:09.An important hold for Gimeno-Traver, he had lost second service game and

:31:10. > :31:10.this set, it would near enough have been all over. I think the umbrellas

:31:11. > :31:17.have gone down again. What do you think Lleyton Hewitt is

:31:18. > :31:24.capable What do you think Lleyton Hewitt is

:31:25. > :31:28.of in tennis and Grand Slams, perhaps in Wimbledon as well? How

:31:29. > :31:34.deep can he go? He is a danger man. He gets a good

:31:35. > :31:41.draw, you can get through to the quarterfinals, thereabouts. I think

:31:42. > :31:52.perhaps any chances of him winning Wimbledon have probably escaped him.

:31:53. > :31:57.They do not look too concerned, not looking to the skies, gambling into

:31:58. > :32:01.walkie-talkies, it is all fine. Lleyton Hewitt, years 33, I always

:32:02. > :32:04.think of him as older. He has been around for such a long time, and

:32:05. > :32:08.there are players who play up to 35 with some success, but it seems to

:32:09. > :32:12.me because of injuries he has had three is quite an old 33.

:32:13. > :32:18.Well, he has said some very nice things about you, to!

:32:19. > :32:25.I am just saying! Well, you first started on tour at

:32:26. > :32:31.age 15, I think. -- he first started. He has been around quite a

:32:32. > :32:36.long while. As you say, ye has used his body, he is not the most

:32:37. > :32:43.powerful player, he does not have a big forehand, nor an especially big

:32:44. > :32:47.serve. He has had to win by grinding.

:32:48. > :32:56.You can always guarantee when you see someone does not have a massive

:32:57. > :33:02.serve that they will slam down a ace.

:33:03. > :33:05.He does have a very effective first serve when it does go in, he wins a

:33:06. > :33:14.huge percentage of the points, but he doesn't hit 60 or 65% of those

:33:15. > :33:20.bonds, so he has to often work. -- those bombs.

:33:21. > :33:27.But his court knowledge, his movement is very good. Gimeno-Traver

:33:28. > :33:31.down on the grass again. Hewitt's ability...

:33:32. > :33:34.That looks like me on a grass court, not having a really happy

:33:35. > :34:01.time. Nothing here for Gimeno-Traver, and

:34:02. > :34:31.I think he is just losing a bit of confidence in his footing.

:34:32. > :34:43.There we are, a hold to love for Lleyton Hewitt. You talking about

:34:44. > :34:49.his percentage of first serves, and as you said he has never been a guy

:34:50. > :34:56.in the 60s or 70s. 52% at the mode for Lleyton Hewitt, Gimeno-Traver is

:34:57. > :35:00.at 71%, but it is just a means of starting a rally, the first serve

:35:01. > :35:07.for Hewitt, once he is in a rally he is damaging.

:35:08. > :35:09.Yes, of the serves he has put into play, you has won 18 of those

:35:10. > :35:28.points, so he is dominant. That is such a typical late in

:35:29. > :35:34.Hewitt defensive point. He had no right to even think he was in that

:35:35. > :35:39.rally. Gimeno-Traver was jerking him all around the place, yet Hewitt

:35:40. > :35:42.just managed to put that slice into an awkward position.

:35:43. > :35:45.There is never an lost cause for Lleyton Hewitt.

:35:46. > :35:55.No, sir. And all things going against the

:35:56. > :36:27.Spaniard now. You know, the two major assets that

:36:28. > :36:32.Lleyton Hewitt has always had - incredible court speed and

:36:33. > :36:37.rock-solid competitiveness. Just focus, he almost never gives you a

:36:38. > :36:44.point. He might miss from time to time, but almost never will he give

:36:45. > :37:17.you mental errors where you can just see he has left the arena.

:37:18. > :37:45.Well, the lob was too good, and Gimeno-Traver hits the backboard.

:37:46. > :38:16.Even Lleyton Hewitt can't run that one down.

:38:17. > :38:26.That is a difficult shot. With the sort of grip that Gimeno-Traver uses

:38:27. > :38:29.on the forehand, the heavy western forehand, when the ball skips

:38:30. > :38:38.through the court like that it is very difficult to time it precisely.

:38:39. > :39:01.Yes, that was a nicely played poorly. -- volley.

:39:02. > :39:08.Just cannot see out of this game, any lingering hopes that

:39:09. > :39:44.Gimeno-Traver has. A beautiful angle from

:39:45. > :39:52.Gimeno-Traver, he has the holder, jets are Schmeichel still just one

:39:53. > :39:56.break of serve adrift. -- he has the hold, still just one break of serve

:39:57. > :40:13.adrift. Hanging in there, Gimeno-Traver. Just.

:40:14. > :40:29.Creating the angle... Yes, and that is not an easy shot to

:40:30. > :40:33.execute from that spot in the court. Not just on cloud watch, but there

:40:34. > :40:43.are some very dark ones appearing now.

:40:44. > :40:46.Atmospheric skies. Don't worry about things you have no

:40:47. > :41:00.control over, Andrew. I am a warrior. -- worrier.

:41:01. > :41:03.Well, stop! You have a sunny American's disposition. Your can do

:41:04. > :41:11.attitude. Hewitt, still with the break,

:41:12. > :41:41.serving, 3-2 in the second set. He will challenge that one. You

:41:42. > :41:47.know, of course, it is difficult, guys come here and they have hit on

:41:48. > :41:54.grass for three or four days, maybe.

:41:55. > :42:01.And, of course, we did have quite a bit of rain last week, so they may

:42:02. > :42:04.not even have hit that many times on grass.

:42:05. > :42:09.Thankfully, the calendar changes next year, I believe, where we have

:42:10. > :42:20.another week in between Paris and Wimbledon.

:42:21. > :42:28.Now, that did look painful, actually.

:42:29. > :42:43.In the hips, or the groin, the half splits.

:42:44. > :42:58.His right knee, actually. No, that is a hit thing. -- hip.

:42:59. > :43:04.Tennis players, by and large, have very tight hips, so if you make this

:43:05. > :43:09.step like that, they can really be vulnerable.

:43:10. > :43:12.-- if you make a misstep like that. I am not sure he is really enjoying

:43:13. > :43:41.this experience, Gimeno-Traver. Another hold for Lleyton Hewitt.

:43:42. > :43:46.Closer to the finish line. Again, he is giving Gimeno-Traver

:43:47. > :43:49.opportunities. He is not at his very best, but the Spaniard unable to

:43:50. > :44:52.take those chances. And Hewitt has the scent right now,

:44:53. > :44:58.doesn't he? Now is the time to get the second break.

:44:59. > :45:00.Yes, looking for a quick finish, get in before any possible threat of

:45:01. > :45:08.rain and get it done, get a rest. Again, the 1-2 works for

:45:09. > :45:36.Gimeno-Traver. Well, you had to improvise there,

:45:37. > :45:40.Lleyton Hewitt. The bones just got away from him. Yes, and it looked as

:45:41. > :45:51.though it got away from Gimeno-Traver on the following shot.

:45:52. > :45:59.-- the balance. -- bounce. It is a .4 double break.

:46:00. > :46:40.This time the net cord is less friendly to the Australian.

:46:41. > :47:31.Good return, some hard-hitting from Gimeno-Traver.

:47:32. > :47:44.Just wide. So, Gimeno-Traver keeps just about in touch.

:47:45. > :47:55.Yes, he has looked down and out so many times, hasn't he, throughout

:47:56. > :47:59.these first two sets? Yet he is still hanging around, like a bad

:48:00. > :48:05.smell. He spent a lot of time on the ground, as well, Gimeno-Traver.

:48:06. > :48:08.Let's see some of his favourites. He has not done himself any harm,

:48:09. > :48:15.which is the main thing, though -- which is the main thing, though he

:48:16. > :48:20.came close to it. These two were on the line, this one

:48:21. > :48:26.certainly not. This one was less... No, that one was routine.

:48:27. > :48:33.We missed out his finest. We are sparing his blushes. Again, it just

:48:34. > :48:38.stresses how difficult it is for players adjusting to this surface.

:48:39. > :48:43.We know that he is a very, very good clay-court player, Gimeno-Traver,

:48:44. > :48:48.but you come from the clay, where you are able to slide, it is part of

:48:49. > :48:54.the game, and here it sort of can be in the opening days, but it is not

:48:55. > :48:59.really. Gimeno-Traver is not able to find himself out of their in a

:49:00. > :49:04.comfortable way on his feet. Yes, today he is a completely different

:49:05. > :49:08.animal to the sort of tennis we will see four days from now, when the

:49:09. > :49:16.court will be dry. And the footing so much better.

:49:17. > :50:09.Lleyton Hewitt with new balls, serving, 4-3.

:50:10. > :50:17.This time he decides to cut it in behind Gimeno-Traver.

:50:18. > :50:25.The perfect play in these positions, go behind the player as much as

:50:26. > :50:29.possible. What an impressive service came that was from Lleyton Hewitt.

:50:30. > :50:36.He is just a game away, perhaps, from a place in the second round.

:50:37. > :50:37.Right on the one-hour mark. A fairly tidy performance from

:50:38. > :51:14.Lleyton Hewitt thus far. There is a bit of noise up there, a

:51:15. > :52:24.lot of people turning around, spectators. Some action in the bar.

:52:25. > :52:34.Cannot afford any of those. Yes, it has not been a good day thus

:52:35. > :52:40.far. Gimeno-Traver, unable to stand up, unable to time his ground

:52:41. > :52:44.strokes. Picked up nicely for Lleyton Hewitt

:52:45. > :52:46.and brings him to the edge of a place in the second round. That

:52:47. > :53:16.brings him to match point. And the end comes quickly, it comes

:53:17. > :53:19.to an Australian cry, come on! The Lleyton camp is happy and

:53:20. > :53:21.Lleyton Hewitt to a straightforward win in straight sets. Safely

:53:22. > :53:34.through. Four times champion here, and the

:53:35. > :53:42.appreciative veterans, as well. He always gives every effort. Nothing

:53:43. > :53:47.really to celebrate for Daniel Gimeno-Traver, not too comfortable

:53:48. > :53:52.on the grass and that was a brief stay. He will look ahead to the rest

:53:53. > :53:56.of the grasscourt season, perhaps go and find somewhere to work on his

:53:57. > :54:03.game. He could not adapt and threaten Lleyton Hewitt, who goes

:54:04. > :54:09.through to play Feliciano Lopez, next up on Centre Court here.

:54:10. > :54:16.Straightforward, 6-3, 6-3, the winner.

:54:17. > :54:26.STUDIO: Well, Lleyton may have seen what time our transmission ends

:54:27. > :54:28.because we are coming off the air in five minutes.

:54:29. > :54:33.It has been an entertaining day on the opening day of the Aegon

:54:34. > :54:36.Championships, good news for James Ward who came through against Blaz

:54:37. > :54:41.Rola Slovenia, a player he beat in the third round of the French Open.

:54:42. > :54:47.He was through in straight sets today. He is the root of the second

:54:48. > :54:53.round to face Grigor Dimitrov. -- he is through. He will be back on court

:54:54. > :54:57.against him, and Dan Evans came through a marathon match against the

:54:58. > :55:01.veteran Jurgen Melzer, winning a very impressive third set tie-break

:55:02. > :55:05.to go through to the second round to face Kevin Anderson. A good day for

:55:06. > :55:11.all of the Britons out on Centre Court today.

:55:12. > :55:14.Dan Evans and James Ward, both wildcards in the Championships, are

:55:15. > :55:18.safely through. And there is confirmation of the

:55:19. > :55:20.results and, indeed, Lleyton Hewitt's victory.

:55:21. > :55:23.We will hopefully you're from him in a moment.

:55:24. > :55:27.We have more tennis coming, Feliciano Lopez, that will be on the

:55:28. > :55:29.red button. Lleyton Hewitt is now with Andrew

:55:30. > :55:35.Castle. Congratulations, you said you like

:55:36. > :55:41.playing at this place? Yes, I love it, it is about my 15th time now.

:55:42. > :55:44.It is one of my favourite stops throughout the year, I love these

:55:45. > :55:47.grass courts, they are some of the best in the world and we are

:55:48. > :55:50.fortunate to play on them and it is a privilege to come out here.

:55:51. > :55:55.When are you going to start playing your age?

:55:56. > :55:59.I don't know, I have a few young kids now and I have to try and keep

:56:00. > :56:01.up with them, so that keeps me fit. What do you enjoy most about the

:56:02. > :56:06.game? Beating someone like that?

:56:07. > :56:10.Beating anyone, it doesn't matter who it is. Obviously I have come

:56:11. > :56:13.through quite a few injuries in the last seven years now, I am still

:56:14. > :56:18.motivated to go out and do the hard work and I enjoy this time of the

:56:19. > :56:24.year. This time in London is one of my favourite months. And many years

:56:25. > :56:28.do you think you have lost, you're really just 33, but do you think you

:56:29. > :56:31.are really a 27-year-old tennis player?

:56:32. > :56:36.I am not sure. Physically I did not pound myself into the ground in the

:56:37. > :56:38.last five or six years because I had surgery and I what I were tied to

:56:39. > :56:41.come back from that. Grass is one of my favourite

:56:42. > :56:46.surfaces and I am still motivated to come out here and it did hard not to

:56:47. > :56:51.be motivated to play tenants like this. If Lopez wins, do you have a

:56:52. > :56:55.game plan for him question might he is a big left-hander with a good

:56:56. > :56:58.serve and volley game for grass, and in the past I have matched up pretty

:56:59. > :57:02.well against him. I just have to go out and execute.

:57:03. > :57:05.This question is from left field, but I am sure you have had a good

:57:06. > :57:08.serve and volley game for grass, and in the past I have matched up pretty

:57:09. > :57:11.well against him. I just have to go out and execute. This question is

:57:12. > :57:13.from left-field, but I am sure you have had daft questions before. I

:57:14. > :57:15.have heard your name mentioned for the Andy Murray coaching role, is

:57:16. > :57:18.that nonsense? That is the first I have heard of

:57:19. > :57:20.it! I am still playing, that is for sure.

:57:21. > :57:23.Late in Hewitt, good to see you again, congratulations.

:57:24. > :57:26.It is great to see him fit and healthy again. He has had his

:57:27. > :57:31.struggles over the years, but Lleyton Hewitt is safely through.

:57:32. > :57:35.We are coming off the air in a moment on BBC Two, but a lot to look

:57:36. > :57:39.forward to tomorrow, Dan Evans on Centre Court at 12:30pm.

:57:40. > :57:45.You can watch the start of that on the BBC Red Button, we will be on

:57:46. > :57:50.the air at 1pm. Marin Cilic, then Grigor Dimitrov, the fourth seed, up

:57:51. > :57:57.against James Ward. Just very briefly, it has been a fantastic day

:57:58. > :57:59.as far as British tennis is concerned.

:58:00. > :58:03.Good performances from James Ward, and particularly Dan Evans to come

:58:04. > :58:08.back after losing that second set, break down in the third, and then

:58:09. > :58:13.coming back against a veteran like Melzer, great match.

:58:14. > :58:17.And looking forward against the Grigor Dimitrov match? Yes,

:58:18. > :58:20.absolutely, hopefully these guys can continue.

:58:21. > :58:27.Sometimes it is difficult to play two great matches in a row. Evans

:58:28. > :58:31.played terrific tennis. Amelie Mauresmo will be in town

:58:32. > :58:33.tomorrow, as well, with her first official day working with Andy

:58:34. > :58:38.Murray. We are back at 1pm on BBC Two

:58:39. > :58:41.tomorrow, it has been a good day for British tennis here. Goodbye.
