:00:36. > :00:38.feeling of a grand journey around Europe. Come with me on a

:00:39. > :00:45.feeling of a grand journey around Europe. Come with fantastic tennis

:00:46. > :00:49.tour. From here in London, we go to the Balkans and the first stop is

:00:50. > :00:54.Bulgaria. Grigor Dimitrov seen by many as the future of men's tennis

:00:55. > :00:59.will be sure to get the pulse is rising on and off the court. From

:01:00. > :01:04.there, it is a quick jaunt to the Czech Republic where we find number

:01:05. > :01:07.two seed Tomas Berdych, the hard-hitting man who is always a

:01:08. > :01:13.danger on grass. Our whistle-stop tour takes us to Croatia were Marin

:01:14. > :01:19.Cilic is waiting. The 2012 champion won by default when David Nalbandian

:01:20. > :01:24.was disqualified. He would love to prove he is a worthy champion.

:01:25. > :01:26.Finally we come back to swinging London where James Ward will be

:01:27. > :01:33.hoping the home crowd can carry him into round three. And the great

:01:34. > :01:37.thing about this tour, you do not have to leave the comfort of your

:01:38. > :01:42.own home. We bring it all to you live from the Queen's Club. You do

:01:43. > :01:47.not have to travel far when you have weather like this either. It is set

:01:48. > :01:48.fair of the week. Very attractive matches on Centre Court at the

:01:49. > :02:01.moment. Rain stopped play yesterday so there

:02:02. > :02:09.is one match to be completed. Dan Evans came to a thrilling match

:02:10. > :02:13.yesterday beating Jurgen Melzer. The rising star of the game, Grigor

:02:14. > :02:19.Dimitrov, is up against James Ward. We are looking forward to that. We

:02:20. > :02:26.are not there on BBC Two until 6pm. Then we are on the red button.

:02:27. > :02:33.Andy Murray has been here today. I spotted his team as I arrived at

:02:34. > :02:38.9am. He was here early, getting another couple of practices in. No

:02:39. > :02:48.sign of his new coach, Amelie Mauresmo. Leon Smith is there. He

:02:49. > :02:54.has been out practising with the player who started the process to

:02:55. > :03:02.become a British citizen. He is looking to become a British citizen

:03:03. > :03:11.from Slovenia, Aljaz Bedene. Just to let you know, behind us, it has gone

:03:12. > :03:17.1-1. John and Peter are with me. No sign of Amelie Mauresmo. She said, I

:03:18. > :03:22.am travelling on Tuesday morning. Her first appearance is going to be

:03:23. > :03:28.on match day. Leaving it a bit tight. Very casual, strolling. It is

:03:29. > :03:33.going to be lots of photographers. Do you think she has any idea what

:03:34. > :03:38.she is in for? She has no idea. It is going to be very interesting. It

:03:39. > :03:43.is amazing it has become such an international story. We make a big

:03:44. > :03:47.thing of it because Andy is the first British men's champion at

:03:48. > :03:53.Wimbledon for so long. It is a big international story. It is. It is

:03:54. > :03:57.the first time one of the very best players has chosen a woman as his

:03:58. > :04:01.coach. It will be interesting to see. I guess what they have just

:04:02. > :04:08.said is that it is just through Wimbledon for the moment. The

:04:09. > :04:15.pressure is on. Yeah X no kidding. How do you follow what happened last

:04:16. > :04:18.year? We have got great matches. Grigor Dimitrov is the rising star

:04:19. > :04:25.of the game. He has been talked about for so long. This is his

:04:26. > :04:30.little warm up routine. His new coach, we know he is a very tough

:04:31. > :04:36.task master. He will get him fit and ready for matches. He will. We were

:04:37. > :04:41.chatting yesterday about the French Open. Disappointing loss to Ivo

:04:42. > :04:47.Karlovic. He said he was served off the court. They did not panic about

:04:48. > :04:51.it too much. Having said that, he is desperate for matches this week.

:04:52. > :04:58.First round loss at the French. He needs to do very well at Queen's.

:04:59. > :05:03.This was last year. He proved he can play on the. He is a natural grass

:05:04. > :05:11.court player. He is a good bloke. -- on the grass. He is very

:05:12. > :05:16.charismatic. He is one heck of a player. Absolutely. We have been

:05:17. > :05:19.waiting for this breakthrough. He was world junior champion and

:05:20. > :05:26.everyone thought he was the next coming. It has taken a little while.

:05:27. > :05:33.Baby Federer. I do not think he liked that. He has improved a lot.

:05:34. > :05:38.It was right about the period when he reached the semifinals here that

:05:39. > :05:43.he made the big jump. That is a heck of a rise. His highest has been 12.

:05:44. > :05:48.He is the youngest player in the world's top 20. When we talk about

:05:49. > :05:57.the big four who are now with Federer in his 30s, Rafa, Novak

:05:58. > :06:02.Djokovic in their 30s. We're waiting for the next players to emerge. He

:06:03. > :06:05.is leading the way. You have got to have consistency to catch the big

:06:06. > :06:10.guns. The disappointing French Open, disappointing Wimbledon last

:06:11. > :06:14.year, Grigor Dimitrov. You want to see him getting to the quarterfinals

:06:15. > :06:18.consistently because he is good enough to do that. Mentally, he has

:06:19. > :06:22.lapses. They are working on that. He has had a good year this year other

:06:23. > :06:26.than the French Open and I think he is a potential grand slam winner and

:06:27. > :06:30.I think it will happen sooner rather than later. On young players, there

:06:31. > :06:38.is a young player, Dominic Thiem, from Austria. Fine work here is a

:06:39. > :06:43.very good shotmaker. He is more raw, a year or two behind Grigor

:06:44. > :06:53.Dimitrov. He has a huge serve. Good athlete. Has a lot of potential. You

:06:54. > :06:57.do not want to use it too often, potential, because it puts a lot of

:06:58. > :07:04.pressure on people. Of course, let us face it, your ability to hit a

:07:05. > :07:10.forehand or a backhand really pales in importance when you compare it to

:07:11. > :07:14.how you think. What goes on between the ears? That is what determines

:07:15. > :07:17.whether these guys are champions. Grigor Dimitrov, probably the most

:07:18. > :07:24.charismatic of the young guys coming up, but perhaps that makes him a

:07:25. > :07:29.little more emotional. That would give rise to some up Sundance. Great

:07:30. > :07:35.to watch, Grigor Dimitrov. His opponent today, James Ward. He had a

:07:36. > :07:38.good win yesterday. Very good. He has played good matches recently.

:07:39. > :07:42.Qualified at the French Open which was fabulous and played well. He is

:07:43. > :07:46.maturing. As he said in the papers, he said, it does not matter what age

:07:47. > :07:52.you finally get it, every player is different. He is now getting what it

:07:53. > :07:57.is like to start going for these tournaments. He played a very good

:07:58. > :08:00.match yesterday. This is not an easy first match for Grigor Dimitrov to

:08:01. > :08:04.come in again someone who has played a lot of matches recently.

:08:05. > :08:08.Qualifying the French Open and coming here and he has a match under

:08:09. > :08:15.his belt, he is a confident player. He has a big serve, he has weapons,

:08:16. > :08:19.James Ward. Against a guy who does not quite know his way around a

:08:20. > :08:24.grass court, James Ward is very dangerous. Grigor Dimitrov though is

:08:25. > :08:28.another matter because he is so comfortable on the surface and he

:08:29. > :08:39.makes a lot of balls and it will put more owners on James Ward to attack.

:08:40. > :08:44.-- bonus. He has pulled off big victories. He has proved he can pull

:08:45. > :08:49.off the surprises. Dan Evans yesterday, talk about James Ward's

:08:50. > :08:53.victory. Against Jurgen Melzer, a very experienced player. He finished

:08:54. > :08:57.it off in style, didn't he? The tie-breaker in the third set, no

:08:58. > :09:02.sign of nerves. He raised the level of his game. It was very impressive

:09:03. > :09:06.because he had a wobble in the tie-break in the second. He went on

:09:07. > :09:10.a break in the third. You would have thought he was going away. Jurgen

:09:11. > :09:13.Melzer was getting into his head. But he did not. It was so impressive

:09:14. > :09:20.to come back. Jurgen Melzer was giving him the mind games and the

:09:21. > :09:26.stair. Dan Evans was doing his stuff and getting on with it. Very

:09:27. > :09:33.talented. Talented, he can pull off great shots from nowhere. He is

:09:34. > :09:45.appearing more involved harm. He is very silky stroke maker -- appearing

:09:46. > :09:50.more harm. He is a rough customer. He has got to play Kevin Anderson.

:09:51. > :09:56.It is not easy. Get a racket on the ball! He is a real pro. He does his

:09:57. > :10:03.stuff every week. Very consistent. Very hard wake. Not going to make it

:10:04. > :10:07.easy, as he shouldn't. It is another look at down to see how we can go up

:10:08. > :10:13.against another top-class player. It will be interesting to see how he

:10:14. > :10:17.reacts to see whether he goes out there and is physically OK and

:10:18. > :10:20.mentally not satisfied with what he did yesterday. He has got to look at

:10:21. > :10:26.it as another match to prove what he can do. He proved it at the U.S.

:10:27. > :10:29.Open. He certainly can do it. Marin Cilic, first appearance at these

:10:30. > :10:32.championships. He won it in controversial style two years ago

:10:33. > :10:40.when David Nalbandian got disqualified from the final. Every

:10:41. > :10:48.time I see it it hurts more and more. But move is worthy of the

:10:49. > :10:54.World Cup. But was a good dive after the fact! It was a sad way to be

:10:55. > :11:03.handed the trophy. He wants to prove he was a worthy winner. He loves the

:11:04. > :11:06.service chilly surface. He has a very tough draw. His whole section

:11:07. > :11:12.is the toughest -- he loves this surface. He is so good on this. He

:11:13. > :11:18.loves it at Queen's. Dangerous player. Really enjoying working with

:11:19. > :11:27.Goran He has had a very good year. He will look at having a chance at

:11:28. > :11:31.it. There we go. There is Amelie Mauresmo! We were told she was not

:11:32. > :11:35.going to be here but yet she is. I'm sure she will be asked for numerous

:11:36. > :11:39.interviews during the day. Hopefully we will be able to talk to her at

:11:40. > :11:43.some point as well. She gave a fascinating press conference in

:11:44. > :11:50.Paris when it was announced and she is such a good thinker of the game

:11:51. > :11:53.and I think... Andy does not do anything without thinking it through

:11:54. > :11:58.and planning and knowing what will work for him. She mentioned that it

:11:59. > :12:01.happened weeks ago that they had phone conversations. Obviously he

:12:02. > :12:06.likes what she is talking about. That is what you need sometimes. He

:12:07. > :12:10.knows his going backwards. He needs someone to talk him through when

:12:11. > :12:15.things get difficult. I agree. So much of being a coach these days is

:12:16. > :12:20.not about strategy or teaching them technique. It is about making a

:12:21. > :12:22.player comfortable and Andy needs to find someone he is comfortable

:12:23. > :12:29.spending time with and also discussing things with. She was a

:12:30. > :12:35.great player. She worked things out. She came through and won Wimbledon.

:12:36. > :12:40.She has proven herself on the big occasions. With the top players, it

:12:41. > :12:43.is like Novak Djokovic with Boris Becker. Top players always looked

:12:44. > :12:47.like they are completely confident about themselves the whole time.

:12:48. > :12:50.Even the top players have doubts occasionally. When you are in Grand

:12:51. > :12:54.Slam is, to have someone who has been there and done it in your

:12:55. > :12:58.corner that might be able to give you a little bit of extra confidence

:12:59. > :13:05.before big matches, I think it is key. That is a nice scene there.

:13:06. > :13:10.Talking to the coach who took her to the Grand Slam 's. If Andy thought

:13:11. > :13:15.about her first, if someone suggested her... ? He said he had

:13:16. > :13:19.made a short list of female coaches and she was obviously on the list.

:13:20. > :13:29.We would love to know who the rest were and how long the list was. You

:13:30. > :13:34.were on the list, right? Of course! Someone like Martina Navratilova

:13:35. > :13:40.maybe. Who knows. That was the decision Andy made. She will be out

:13:41. > :13:45.on the practice court. He is out on court at 2pm. I am sure we will have

:13:46. > :13:49.our cameras there to see her in action with Andy. Interesting

:13:50. > :13:56.appointment. One other person to talk about, Tomas Berdych. He is a

:13:57. > :14:05.danger, Wimbledon finalist. But he can worry anyone on a given day. He

:14:06. > :14:09.was out with Andy yesterday. He is the sort of player no one talks

:14:10. > :14:13.about. You should talk about him because he got to the finals of

:14:14. > :14:16.Wimbledon. He got to the quarters of the French Open. Did not play

:14:17. > :14:22.particular well in the quarters. But he is a whizz around and dangerous.

:14:23. > :14:26.No one ever really puts him in the mix -- he is always around. He has

:14:27. > :14:31.all of the game and he is quietly plodding along and he is a danger

:14:32. > :14:36.here and at Wimbledon. Apart from that year when he got to the semis

:14:37. > :14:44.in Paris and the finals in Wimbledon, he has almost become one

:14:45. > :14:49.of these guys who is Mr Consistent. When he first came on the tour, he

:14:50. > :14:53.was wild and would win a tournament and then lose early. Now he is

:14:54. > :14:58.completely the opposite. He is just a machine. Those ahead and gets

:14:59. > :15:12.through to the quarters, semis, but has struggled to beat the big four.

:15:13. > :15:16.who hasn't! Such an interest -- interesting draw. If they all come

:15:17. > :15:22.through, fascinating matchups. The top quarter is phenomenal. Stanislas

:15:23. > :15:30.Wawrinka, Marin Cilic, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Sam Querrey. Then you have

:15:31. > :15:34.Andy. A lot of world-class players who want to do well and win the

:15:35. > :15:38.title and get ready for Wimbledon. You look at them and you go, there

:15:39. > :15:42.are a number of players, they could all do serious damage at Wimbledon.

:15:43. > :15:46.If you want to make your comments about who you think might do well

:15:47. > :15:54.here or if you have any questions you want to ask John, Peter or Andy,

:15:55. > :15:59.contact the team. #bbctennis. That is how you can contact the team. We

:16:00. > :16:04.are looking forward to some great tennis. Not far away, it is the big

:16:05. > :16:10.one. Here they come. So much pressure, so

:16:11. > :16:14.much expectation. It is the title all of the players want to win. A

:16:15. > :16:23.lot of the guys are friends off the court. The moment they step out by,

:16:24. > :16:28.forget it. Hugely exciting. Wimbledon is absolutely incredible.

:16:29. > :16:32.Wimbledon, 2014. It is anyone's game. Starts on the 23rd of June

:16:33. > :16:39.across the BBC. A week on Monday. I hope the weather

:16:40. > :16:42.holds right the way through. We are enjoying looking back at some

:16:43. > :16:47.Wimbledon classics each Saturday. Coming up on BBC Two at 11:15am this

:16:48. > :16:58.Saturday, two of the great ladies finals. From 1978 and 1993. Those

:16:59. > :17:09.are the two classic finals that we are looking back on this Saturday.

:17:10. > :17:12.So, my thanks to John and Peter. Peter is heading off to the

:17:13. > :17:18.commentary box. We will join this match live because it is 2-0-G in

:17:19. > :17:28.the third and final set. Andy Castle has been watching this one. -- 2-0.

:17:29. > :18:00.It did not look like it would be good, but it is.

:18:01. > :18:09.Take on the net position. Did so well to get a racket on the return

:18:10. > :18:18.and to make Lopez play a few balls. Last year it was called off at 640

:18:19. > :18:26.can -- last night. Moisture got under the surface and it started to

:18:27. > :18:34.rain. Kukushkin looked in control and served but Lajovic broke. --

:18:35. > :18:54.Lopez. Not only did Lopez serve for the

:18:55. > :19:00.set, but he was up a break early on and played a very loose game. Played

:19:01. > :19:09.really safe short volleys. The Spaniard has done well to recover

:19:10. > :19:13.his composure. I never saw him as angry as at the end of the second

:19:14. > :19:21.set tie-break. A lot of it was to do with the way Lajovic was playing. A

:19:22. > :19:27.lot of players would have gone away against Lopez, even in the first

:19:28. > :19:31.game of this resumption at 12:10pm, Lajovic was close to going to

:19:32. > :19:35.ground. Really not got his footing and all, but he has worked his way

:19:36. > :19:42.into the match. He strikes me as a player who will stick around. He has

:19:43. > :19:51.won eight matches at all levels C. It is his arrival time now. He is

:19:52. > :19:55.23. Dan Evans is 24. Slightly younger generation to the guys at

:19:56. > :20:00.the top of the game. I don't know how high Lajovic can go, but he

:20:01. > :20:06.looks to have the stickability. It is difficult to judge how good a

:20:07. > :20:14.player is going to be watching them on a grass court. He will have

:20:15. > :20:23.played so few matches on the surface. Very steep learning curve

:20:24. > :20:27.for him. Quite an enjoyment, to see players that you would not otherwise

:20:28. > :20:32.see. The first two or three days here always interesting. Great

:20:33. > :20:37.victories for James Ward and Dan Evans yesterday. They are back

:20:38. > :20:43.today. Evan Anderson versus Dan Evans follows this match. Then Marin

:20:44. > :22:04.Cilic and Marinko Matosevic. Back in the day, that is why players

:22:05. > :22:13.used Continental grips, eastern grips, more than the heavy Western

:22:14. > :22:20.grips Lajovic is using now. So often, the balls and low as that

:22:21. > :22:21.did. But those days are over. The courts are so hard it bounces well

:22:22. > :22:41.up. Picked him off right in the corner.

:22:42. > :22:46.Keeps himself in the game. For those who learned with what we used to

:22:47. > :22:47.call the chopper grip, it takes a lifetime to get rid of it. Still

:22:48. > :23:06.trying! The Serbian is in this set. I am

:23:07. > :23:11.glad to see that. One break of serve which is the only thing he is done

:23:12. > :23:17.by, it is not a lot against him. He is a man who has played in the Davis

:23:18. > :23:22.Cup final in Belgrade last year. Lost to Stefan Stepanek in the fifth

:23:23. > :23:26.and deciding match. Tough loss. Invaluable experience. -- Marek

:23:27. > :23:40.Stech and it -- Radek Stepanek. He has become a difficult man to

:23:41. > :23:45.serve two. In the tie-break of the second set, he hit two winners at

:23:46. > :23:49.the point at which he is returning from now. One out wide and one down

:23:50. > :23:57.the middle. He is beginning to pick up the Lopez serve on occasion. Not

:23:58. > :24:04.a good delivery. The slice into the body is always a good delivery. So

:24:05. > :26:06.often it takes away the return's ability to take a full swing.

:26:07. > :26:13.Lopez, one of the harder men to beat on a grass court. He will certainly

:26:14. > :26:18.be a player who will show up in the draw and the bigger players will

:26:19. > :26:21.note to the -- where he is. Struggling to get rid of Lajovic

:26:22. > :26:39.here. Had that one. You have to question why it was he

:26:40. > :26:43.misted by such a long way. -- why he missed it. What was he trying to do

:26:44. > :26:58.with that ball? It is a valuable hold for the

:26:59. > :27:17.Spaniard. You are talking about how the game

:27:18. > :27:22.has changed, the grass mixture has changed the playing characteristics

:27:23. > :27:27.of grass courts over the years. But with that slice, it is like a

:27:28. > :27:35.frisbee. Just carving through. They did not look like a bounce. Also I

:27:36. > :27:40.think the wind grabbed that ball and stopped it, if you will. A

:27:41. > :27:49.combination perhaps of bad bounce, heavy slice and wind. A week ago, at

:27:50. > :27:56.Roland Garros, big match, Nadal against Lajovic. Just a week later,

:27:57. > :28:01.change of country, change of surface, less than two weeks away

:28:02. > :28:07.from Wimbledon, that is the adjustment the players have to wait.

:28:08. > :28:10.-- make. The way your game has to change and the body has to change,

:28:11. > :28:17.your perception and the way you concentrate on the court. The points

:28:18. > :28:22.are less long. It is a staccato feel to a grass court match. Anglais, it

:28:23. > :28:37.is more of a construction, if you will. -- on clay. It requires a cool

:28:38. > :28:41.head. 20 degrees at the moment, rising to 22, 23 this afternoon.

:28:42. > :28:42.Gentle south-westerly breeze. Beautiful weather for the rest of

:28:43. > :29:16.the week. Players will certainly adjust their

:29:17. > :29:21.ball toss if the sun is in the wrong place. They move it back over the

:29:22. > :29:27.head a little bit, perhaps throw a bit more kick on the ball. But it

:29:28. > :29:28.makes it very difficult if you have a big first serve and you have to

:29:29. > :29:44.alter it. This will be interesting. Hold on.

:29:45. > :29:54.He touched the net before the ball bounced twice. You reckon? Yeah.

:29:55. > :30:03.Great effort. Memories of Djokovic hitting the net against Nadal when

:30:04. > :30:08.he could have been 5-3 up. The ball has to bounce twice which would mean

:30:09. > :30:16.the end of the point of course. He hit it before it had even bounced

:30:17. > :31:29.once. Djokovic last year in the French in the semi. Unbelievable.

:31:30. > :31:33.of the members' heads. I do not think anybody got injured but it

:31:34. > :31:48.came off the head of the racket and whipped up into the bar area.

:31:49. > :31:56.Fumbled in the second row. Great control of the tennis ball by Lopez,

:31:57. > :32:25.good strength. UMPIRE: Game, Lopez. Deliberate,

:32:26. > :32:30.measured, controlled. And that will be that, I'm sure. 5-1, two breaks,

:32:31. > :33:48.serving from this end for the Mac. Pretty at -- pretty tame approach

:33:49. > :34:50.shot from Lopez. Whichever way you look at it, that

:34:51. > :35:15.is a beautiful delivery. Slice, power, control.

:35:16. > :35:59.break. He served for the match in the second set.

:36:00. > :36:18.UMPIRE: Game, set and match, Lopez. The scoreline comfortable in the

:36:19. > :36:26.end, 6-1 in the third. It is a credit to him for making it

:36:27. > :36:30.competitive on a Lajovic. Lopez will perhaps look back on the second set

:36:31. > :36:40.and say, I could have done that better, but perhaps playing another

:36:41. > :36:46.set has helped him. Three times he has been a

:36:47. > :36:51.quarterfinalist and he is through, Feliciano Lopez. Next up it is

:36:52. > :36:56.Britain's Dan Evans up against the big serving South African Kevin

:36:57. > :37:02.Anderson. Marin Cilic later, the number nine seed, up against that

:37:03. > :37:10.loss of itch -- up against Matosevic. And James Duckworth

:37:11. > :37:18.against Tomas Berdych, we will be covering that.

:37:19. > :37:27.Many congratulations, how good is it to get the first win in the way? It

:37:28. > :37:30.is a nice feeling. We have only two or three weeks on grass during the

:37:31. > :37:35.season so for everybody it is tough and I have to be proud of my first

:37:36. > :37:42.win today. It is a very different game from last week, 15, 20 shot

:37:43. > :37:49.rallies. It was five or six in that the longest. It is a completely

:37:50. > :37:55.different game, even though the grass is not as fast as it used to

:37:56. > :38:01.be. You need to adjust your game, be a bit more aggressive. For me it is

:38:02. > :38:07.a bit easier and I am happy to be back again and to win today. I am

:38:08. > :38:15.looking forward to the next few days. You got to the semifinal four

:38:16. > :38:20.years ago so big -- so did that give you the taste for being here on

:38:21. > :38:37.Sunday? I hope so. There was a lot of work to do. -- there is. The

:38:38. > :38:40.match at a time. -- one match. Did you know that the chairman of your

:38:41. > :38:47.fan club is Sue Barker, who presents programmes on the BBC? I did not

:38:48. > :39:01.know that. Thank you, I can have -- I hope I can make her happy.

:39:02. > :39:08.Feliciano Lopez, congratulations. What really separates the great from

:39:09. > :39:20.the good? Style, of course. Flair, obviously. Passion, that is a

:39:21. > :39:25.given. Learn from your mistakes. Always think about what you missed.

:39:26. > :39:35.Never be satisfied with what you have done. Whatever you do, do it

:39:36. > :39:46.with your heart. I never thought about what I could get out of

:39:47. > :39:50.football, I just wanted to play. It all gets under way on Thursday,

:39:51. > :39:57.that is when the tournament kicks off. A lot to look forward to before

:39:58. > :40:04.that. Tonight, Gary Lineker in Brazil, talking to Ronaldo, the

:40:05. > :40:11.legend. And a special preview tomorrow evening on BBC1. The

:40:12. > :40:19.tournament kicking off on Thursday, England play Italy on Saturday.

:40:20. > :40:23.Amelie Mauresmo has arrived in London, she will have her first day

:40:24. > :40:30.working as Andy Murray's coach. There is a practice session at 2pm

:40:31. > :40:34.today so we will be courtside to see them as they start their grasscourt

:40:35. > :40:40.season together. A lot to look forward to on the Centre Court had a

:40:41. > :40:50.lot to look forward to later in the week. Ernests Gulbis had an amazing

:40:51. > :41:00.run at the French Open. Let's meet this colourful character, with John.

:41:01. > :41:05.Ernests Gulbis from Latvia, when you wake up in the morning, now you have

:41:06. > :41:10.reached the last four of a major championship do you feel a bit

:41:11. > :41:13.better about yourself? I have proved to myself I can be in the semifinal

:41:14. > :41:20.but I need to make that extra step. To lose to four sets to Djokovic is

:41:21. > :41:28.no disgrace but when you went to bed that you think you could have won

:41:29. > :41:33.it? Five sets against Djokovic in a semifinal would have been tough

:41:34. > :41:40.anyway. I need to have some more semifinals, maybe a final under my

:41:41. > :41:46.belt. In practical terms, what are the big differences on grass?

:41:47. > :41:58.Definitely the movement, I did not move a lot since my last match. I

:41:59. > :42:04.just went... Party? No, I just gambled away a percentage of my

:42:05. > :42:17.winnings. Word you a winner or a loser? -- were you. A big loser! I

:42:18. > :42:27.like the way you are presenting as this big maverick on the tour. Once

:42:28. > :42:36.you have mastered the casino, how do you master the grass? Is it just

:42:37. > :42:42.about practice? I am practising in a couple of hours and tomorrow is

:42:43. > :42:48.going to be the singles. I take this tournament as really good

:42:49. > :42:57.preparation. I will have a lot of hours and running and hopefully by

:42:58. > :43:01.Wimbledon I will be close to 100%. We were almost disappointed in the

:43:02. > :43:08.semifinal last week in Paris that you did not smash your racket, is

:43:09. > :43:18.this the new Gulbis? I have not ruled it out. Good to see you.

:43:19. > :43:23.He always provides a talking point. Some of his interviews at the French

:43:24. > :43:28.Open were memorable. He was asked about Mauresmo, about women's

:43:29. > :43:38.coaching, the question you have to ask everybody. He was saying, yes, I

:43:39. > :43:41.am going to take a list of all the good-looking female players and

:43:42. > :43:45.am going to take a list of all the good-looking female players ask if

:43:46. > :43:51.they want to coach me. He was talking about Ivanovic and so on, so

:43:52. > :43:55.the media flock to him. He has not had a shave and a haircut since last

:43:56. > :43:57.week, but the substance to his game, the fact he wants to be out there

:43:58. > :44:00.and win, week, but the substance to his game,

:44:01. > :44:04.the fact he wants to be he won't be satisfied until he has done

:44:05. > :44:10.something big. Nobody would be interested if he was not winning

:44:11. > :44:14.matches, but he is a threat. He is certainly moving up the rankings

:44:15. > :44:25.into the world top ten. Some good names their emerging. -- there

:44:26. > :44:30.emerging. Gulbis, when you look at his history, he has come from a very

:44:31. > :44:35.wealthy family and everybody said, maybe he does not have the

:44:36. > :44:42.motivation. We knew he had the talent, but he seems to have found

:44:43. > :44:45.the desire. I remember seeing him at the French Open when he beat Tim

:44:46. > :44:53.Henman years ago and seeing the ability he had. He has a very

:44:54. > :44:56.privileged background, he goes around in a private plane, and his

:44:57. > :45:02.motivation has perhaps gone up and down a bit. You ask whether he is

:45:03. > :45:06.ever going to get the hunger, but he has answered that. He is

:45:07. > :45:13.unorthodox, a difficult player to read and I don't think the players

:45:14. > :45:18.like to play him. He does his own thing of the court as well and he is

:45:19. > :45:24.fun to watch and to listen to the press conferences, he is a breath of

:45:25. > :45:28.fresh air. He had a few words to say about Novak Djokovic chip because

:45:29. > :45:37.they grew up together at a tennis academy. -- Novak Djokovic. He said

:45:38. > :45:46.they did not get on and they still don't. He was asked, Andy Murray was

:45:47. > :45:52.asked, what are the other players saying about you having a woman

:45:53. > :45:59.coach. He said, I don't care what they are saying. It is not boxing

:46:00. > :46:06.but it is a combat sport in a way, one person's intellect and wit as

:46:07. > :46:13.well as the game, and he has presence on court. The sort of game

:46:14. > :46:22.that he brings, he serves an average of 126 mph. He can belt the ball

:46:23. > :46:28.past you, a major threat. of 126 mph. He can belt the ball

:46:29. > :46:34.past you, a major Grigor Dimitrov is just outside the top ten. Let's see

:46:35. > :46:39.how he is looking forward to this year's Championships.

:46:40. > :46:44.Welcome back to the Queen's Club. This is a place where you have some

:46:45. > :46:51.pretty happy memories. Indeed. I am excited to come here. It is always

:46:52. > :46:55.something special and it is good preparation before Wimbledon. I am a

:46:56. > :47:01.happy every time I am here so hopefully I can have a good run out.

:47:02. > :47:05.You have had plenty of appearances here and you had a wild card very

:47:06. > :47:12.early on. I suppose that builds an affinity. Yes, it was one of the

:47:13. > :47:17.first tournaments where I played really good. I had a wild card early

:47:18. > :47:24.on and that was a big step for me, even though I had to come out and

:47:25. > :47:33.play against the seeded guys, but I am one of them now. I feel quite

:47:34. > :47:40.confident at the moment and it can be like a happy story for me and my

:47:41. > :47:45.goal is to win. You have already reached the semifinals here, you

:47:46. > :47:51.were pretty emotional. How can I forget it? I was on Centre Court

:47:52. > :48:01.right here and my father was here so that meant a lot to me. The next

:48:02. > :48:10.step is winning it. I remember the reaction of not only the fans...

:48:11. > :48:17.When you won your first round match they were all waiting for you off

:48:18. > :48:22.the court. I think I have a really good relationship with all of them,

:48:23. > :48:30.the whole team that sets up the tournament. A couple of years ago I

:48:31. > :48:35.was down a set or so and I was sitting down on the changeover and

:48:36. > :48:40.one of the ball girls sat next to me and I started asking her some random

:48:41. > :48:46.questions, she was really happy with that. That changed my mood a bit and

:48:47. > :48:51.I came back and won the match. You are massively dedicated to your

:48:52. > :48:59.tennis but you also seem to enjoy other aspects of life. Yes, for me,

:49:00. > :49:03.I think, of course tennis is a priority, this is what I do and what

:49:04. > :49:11.I love, and of course it will be number one for me, but at some

:49:12. > :49:18.stage, throughout my career, I have come to the conclusion that of

:49:19. > :49:21.course tennis is something you are going to do for a period of time but

:49:22. > :49:29.after that other things are coming into play. There are things that are

:49:30. > :49:35.bit more important at times, so I just have to look forward to it and

:49:36. > :49:48.of course do my best, because my goal is to be number one and when

:49:49. > :50:06.Grand Slams. -- and win. You tweeted, outstanding champion, when

:50:07. > :50:12.Maria Sharapova won. She is a true champion and maybe everybody can get

:50:13. > :50:19.something out of that. Yes, they are dating, and she was

:50:20. > :50:28.watching him last year. And it was about -40. If she is there in that

:50:29. > :50:35.kind of weather, watching him, they are together. She did not mention

:50:36. > :50:38.him in her speech, she just said, there are some people who can't be

:50:39. > :50:47.here and I would like to thank them for their support. He talks about as

:50:48. > :50:53.well as he plays, because he is beautiful to watch on court, but he

:50:54. > :50:59.gets the whole package. It is about like the first time you see Raphael

:51:00. > :51:14.on play live, you see the ball come off the racket. -- Rafa Nadal. With

:51:15. > :51:18.respect, he is better than bulbous and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, better than

:51:19. > :51:26.all of these guys. -- better than Gulbis. Those guys have something

:51:27. > :51:34.different from him, maybe they can grind no, but in terms of the racket

:51:35. > :51:45.ability I have not seen anybody like him for some time. -- maybe they can

:51:46. > :51:50.grind more. It takes time to put it all together and use the right shot

:51:51. > :51:59.at the right time. He is an artist on the court, he has so much

:52:00. > :52:04.ability, he reminds me of Ilha Nastase, he has 20 options on the

:52:05. > :52:14.barrel and sometimes he was picking the wrong one. -- on the ball. He is

:52:15. > :52:22.learning that you have to play solidly at times as well as going

:52:23. > :52:28.for the special shots. His coach deserves a lot of credit for that,

:52:29. > :52:34.Peter is not coaching him now that he got him to narrow the focus, hit

:52:35. > :52:39.the right shot. Federer struggled with it, he had every shot in the

:52:40. > :52:43.book and it was not until he was 20, 21, 22 that he settled into his

:52:44. > :52:53.winning game plan. If this guy does the same, personally I feel he will

:52:54. > :53:00.win this year. The best-of-3 sets I would give him a better chance, the

:53:01. > :53:08.best of five it is more tough. Dan Evans, the Briton, down this end. We

:53:09. > :53:15.were told Andy Murray would practice at two o'clock, but we have heard he

:53:16. > :53:21.has cancelled that, he is probably going elsewhere, because now he is

:53:22. > :53:26.with Mauresmo there will be a media storm, so perhaps he wants to go

:53:27. > :53:34.somewhere more private. I wonder where he could possibly be going!

:53:35. > :53:42.Just a few miles further south, perhaps! He is a member. So is she,

:53:43. > :53:52.as winners of that tournament, they are both members of SW19. I would

:53:53. > :53:57.like to go and watch that! This will be interesting for Dan Evans against

:53:58. > :54:15.a very tall opponent, and he will have some Berlitz thrown at him. --

:54:16. > :54:21.will it -- bullets. He is arriving now, we have seen the talent, we

:54:22. > :54:29.have seen it in the Davis Cup. If you can win in the fifth rubber, you

:54:30. > :54:34.have something upstairs. He knows what he has to do now, his work

:54:35. > :54:40.ethic has been a bit shaky in the past but I think he is getting it

:54:41. > :54:51.now. With Evans at the US Open, beating Tomic... He has to make up a

:54:52. > :54:56.lot of points here and this is an opportunity where you can cover

:54:57. > :55:02.those points at some stage. When you are outside the top 100, if you get

:55:03. > :55:11.a lot of points coming off, as he has in the summer, this time last

:55:12. > :55:21.year he won two matches. He beat Jurgen Melzer yesterday,

:55:22. > :55:33.demonstrated a pretty loose, Carmen Cole at -- calm and collected mind.

:55:34. > :55:41.He is a tough professional, week in, week out he is a quarterfinal,

:55:42. > :55:50.semifinal man, Kevin Anderson. Coming up against Dan Evans, who

:55:51. > :55:56.gets a lot of spin Low, gets the ball low, I think you would have to

:55:57. > :56:09.put Anderson as a reasonably strong favourite but it is winnable for

:56:10. > :56:12.Dan. Anderson is always a dangerous player but it is always tough, the

:56:13. > :56:20.first match coming off the clay onto the grass, and Dan has had a lot

:56:21. > :56:25.more time to get used to it. For Dan, the first 20 minutes, half an

:56:26. > :56:33.hour of this, maybe he can get himself in front, maybe nick a break

:56:34. > :56:38.and steal the first set. Anderson's forehand is not as strong as his

:56:39. > :56:44.backhand. He might want to be directing some serves to the middle

:56:45. > :56:54.or body. A very sound professional, it will not take Anderson long to

:56:55. > :56:58.find the ball, it will take him a few minutes, and maybe we can hope

:56:59. > :57:05.for Dan Evans to sneak in on the backhand. The way he finished off

:57:06. > :57:11.that match yesterday, coming back in the third set, would have given him

:57:12. > :57:19.some confidence. Peter Fleming and Andrew Cotter are the commentators.

:57:20. > :57:34.A good day for the Britons yesterday, I win for Ward and for

:57:35. > :57:37.Dan Evans over Jurgen Melzer. Dan Evans does feed off these days

:57:38. > :57:48.sometimes and this would be a big scalp, Anderson. He offers plenty of

:57:49. > :57:59.creativity, Dan Evans, he has plenty of game about him.

:58:00. > :59:06.It is Kevin Anderson who will get us under way, the South African.

:59:07. > :59:28.Anderson serving into the sun from the far end.

:59:29. > :59:48.That serve, 144 mph, certainly had some zip about it.

:59:49. > :00:09.We had another reading of 129 for that one which was 144.

:00:10. > :00:56.of 126 mph. He can belt the ball past you, a major

:00:57. > :01:12.He has every chance. Yeah, this is what Evans brings to the table. He

:01:13. > :01:14.is a shot maker. He likes to go after any ball inside the baseline,

:01:15. > :01:36.he will take it on. That one broke the speed gun! The

:01:37. > :01:45.speed gun is now keeping its counsel.

:01:46. > :01:54.Two impressive serves to close it out and hold the opening game. That

:01:55. > :02:02.is essentially what Dan Evans is up against. Anderson has become such a

:02:03. > :02:12.consistent player. He is six foot eight tall and has a very consistent

:02:13. > :02:19.service action. Very rarely will we see Anderson throw in bad service

:02:20. > :02:23.games. It is going to be a very difficult man to break. Puts a lot

:02:24. > :02:30.of balls into play. Constant pressure. Opponents have to maintain

:02:31. > :02:37.their mental... Pressure already on the Evans

:02:38. > :04:11.serve. Two break points very early in this

:04:12. > :04:28.match. It is quite blowy and there. The

:04:29. > :05:02.trees are dancing. Survived. Two break points have come

:05:03. > :05:09.and gone. Anderson will be really disappointed with how he played that

:05:10. > :05:12.point. Early on, Evans certainly feeling the pressure. You have got

:05:13. > :05:27.to put the ball on the court, force him to hit a winner.

:05:28. > :05:38.Another one white. -- wide. Unforced error from the South African. Dan

:05:39. > :06:07.Evans clambering out of the hole. No challenge from Evans. We have the

:06:08. > :06:33.benefit from Hawk-Eye. It was wide. Yes! Instant challenge from Dan

:06:34. > :06:43.Evans. It certainly hit the baseline. I think it also fit the

:06:44. > :06:53.sideline. Which? the white flew up. -- the white flew up. Break point

:06:54. > :07:05.began. -- again. Frustrating for Dan Evans. That game, a pretty good

:07:06. > :07:12.illustration of what Dan Evans is up against, playing against a big-time

:07:13. > :07:17.player like Kevin Anderson. Evans's serve is not as powerful as a lot of

:07:18. > :07:24.players. Certainly not possible to get it out

:07:25. > :08:58.wide. Interesting how Anderson is mixing

:08:59. > :09:13.speeds up on his second delivery. A double fault at 30-0 hit mark six.

:09:14. > :09:21.The last one spun more heavily. Three aces and one to close out the

:09:22. > :09:26.game. Anderson looking impressive. It is a step up for Dan Evans. He

:09:27. > :09:31.has had good wins over top 50 players. This is a top 20 player

:09:32. > :09:39.now, Kevin Anderson. He has got the weaponry on grass as well. Yeah. I

:09:40. > :09:50.suppose the question is, can Evans try and outmanoeuvre Anderson? Just

:09:51. > :09:57.a little bit. Can he is hit short angles and deep slices and do

:09:58. > :10:01.something to put Anderson off-balance question that it is a

:10:02. > :10:13.tall order. They have met once before. It was eight Challenger

:10:14. > :10:19.Event. Five years ago. -- it was the Challenger Event. Three close sets.

:10:20. > :10:22.We were talking yesterday about guys coming through the American

:10:23. > :10:29.collegiate system and whether it is a good idea. Blaz Rola had done

:10:30. > :10:35.that. Given that that -- Kevin Anderson and other South Africans do

:10:36. > :10:41.that. Your prime is delayed by two or three years. No question that

:10:42. > :10:52.going to college in America helped Kevin Anderson I think make the

:10:53. > :10:59.transition from junior to now, well, top pro. There speaks a Wolverine.

:11:00. > :11:16.Evans serving. Kevin Anderson of course went to the

:11:17. > :11:24.University of Illinois and I believe won the NCAs as well. What creature

:11:25. > :11:31.are they? I do not think they are a creature. Badgers? No, that is

:11:32. > :11:56.Wisconsin. That is quite a good passing shot.

:11:57. > :12:03.Layers are not perhaps quite as adept at hitting low awkward

:12:04. > :12:22.volleys -- players. What a great return of serve that

:12:23. > :12:25.was. Very short take-back and short follow-through. Struck the return so

:12:26. > :13:10.solidly. Good defensive work from Dan Evans.

:13:11. > :13:13.Once again testing Anderson. The strain going through the news of

:13:14. > :13:16.Kevin Anderson as he tries to get down for the ground strokes. -- the

:13:17. > :13:30.knees. The crowd appreciate that. Settle

:13:31. > :13:55.his nerves. Time for Anderson to pile down the

:13:56. > :13:57.serves as well. A little bit trickier with the sun position at

:13:58. > :14:43.the moment. Not much to be done about that. No,

:14:44. > :14:45.if Anderson makes a high percentage of first serves in this match, Evans

:14:46. > :15:14.is going to struggle to break. It is interesting watching Dan Evans

:15:15. > :15:23.waiting to receive a lot of movement... Was much closer in and

:15:24. > :15:27.then perhaps giving Anderson something to think about. Trying to

:15:28. > :15:49.get in his head and distract him anyway possible.

:15:50. > :16:09.Evans, for a change, able to get onto the front foot. Has not been

:16:10. > :16:12.able to do it too often thus far. Watch Evans and see if he dances

:16:13. > :16:43.around more than usual. He has done well here, Evans. He

:16:44. > :16:48.will certainly have more doubt in his mind, Kevin Anderson. His serve

:16:49. > :17:11.creaking a little bit. Break point. Reading the serve and the reaction

:17:12. > :17:17.time, you do not have much time to do anything. He felt he got that one

:17:18. > :17:24.but he could not quite executed. Evans got the serve he was hoping

:17:25. > :17:35.for, but he was unable to time it properly. And others, you just hear

:17:36. > :17:40.whizzing by. That serve speed on the gun has been read at 78mph. I am not

:17:41. > :17:53.sure that is correct! Good hold in the end from Kevin

:17:54. > :18:00.Anderson. Just a little opening for Dan Evans. Did not take the game,

:18:01. > :18:12.but we'll take a little bit of encouragement that he got the break

:18:13. > :18:15.point. Yes. And no. While, the fact Evans managed to get into

:18:16. > :18:22.Anderson's had a little bit was the good news. However, I am not sure he

:18:23. > :18:30.will be able to succeed with that tactic again. -- Anderson's head.

:18:31. > :18:39.Anderson will be ready for it next time and more composed. The progress

:18:40. > :18:50.of Kevin Anderson, the last top 20 player from South Africa, Ferreira.

:18:51. > :18:54.We always look ahead to the All England Club and everything that

:18:55. > :18:58.might unfold there and you think Kevin Anderson is the kind of layer

:18:59. > :19:08.who could have a great championship at Wimbledon -- the kind of player.

:19:09. > :19:14.Well, it is certainly a possibility. As you say, he has a big game, big

:19:15. > :19:23.serve. Very compact ground strokes that can adapt to adverse

:19:24. > :19:29.conditions, bad bounces, let's say. He has a sound mind. So often at

:19:30. > :19:35.Wimbledon, you have to be able to come back after rain delays. He is

:19:36. > :19:45.probably better prepared to do that done a lot. -- than a lot. Well

:19:46. > :19:50.ahead of ourselves here. He has a match on his hands here and Dan

:19:51. > :19:56.Evans... I would thought that was one of Tim Henman's greatest assets.

:19:57. > :19:57.He was so easy going and able to deal with all of the rain delays and

:19:58. > :20:17.things. Of course, the one that got away was

:20:18. > :20:19.the semifinal loss to Goran after the rain delay. Maybe that was the

:20:20. > :20:44.match that proves the rule. Anderson's forehand, not quite as

:20:45. > :21:35.strong perhaps as his backhand. Nicely done. He has got a lot of

:21:36. > :21:42.shots at his disposal. That was clever. Anderson with no answer.

:21:43. > :21:56.See how gracefully and comfortably he slides on the surface.

:21:57. > :22:13.Good hold. Reasonably comfortable hold. Just a break adrift. Dan Evans

:22:14. > :22:15.has set the record for the longest slide. You can see the mark in the

:22:16. > :22:43.service box. Anderson serving. It certainly appears as though both

:22:44. > :22:51.players will attempt, or their best chances of breaking serve will be

:22:52. > :22:59.when their opponent is serving into the sun. That is not this end. Let

:23:00. > :23:49.us see if Anderson can comfortably hold this service game.

:23:50. > :23:58.That was not a good time for Evans to move over. Probably Anderson saw

:23:59. > :24:04.that out of the corner of his eye. Because the score was 30-0, he

:24:05. > :24:11.thought, let's go for it. That is the sort of play you want to make it

:24:12. > :24:21.30-30 or 15-30 when the pressure is on the server.

:24:22. > :24:34.Lovely passing shot. Sixth at eight and full stretch and still Anderson

:24:35. > :25:01.could not get there -- 6ft eight and at full stretch. Nicely played.

:25:02. > :25:38.But eventually Anderson holds. UMPIRE: New balls, please. There is

:25:39. > :25:45.still just the one break of serve that came early on separating the

:25:46. > :25:50.two. We talked about Kevin Anderson, the progress he is making up the

:25:51. > :25:58.rankings, but at the macro Dan Evans this year at Zagreb, he had a very

:25:59. > :26:09.good run there to the semifinals -- but Dan Evans. He beat Carl --

:26:10. > :26:13.Philipp Kohlschreiber. He eventually lost to Tommy Haas. It showed he is

:26:14. > :26:24.more than capable of mixing it with some of the best. It has not been a

:26:25. > :26:38.long match in terms of duration. Done quickly.

:26:39. > :26:47.UMPIRE: Take your seats quickly, please. Time.

:26:48. > :26:52.A reminder of what is coming up on court here today. Marin Cilic

:26:53. > :27:00.against Marinko Matosevic. Then Grigor Dimitrov against James Ward,

:27:01. > :27:03.James Duckworth against Tomas Berdych. Dan Evans serving to stay

:27:04. > :27:19.in the first set. Cracking second serve. He is going

:27:20. > :27:21.to have to take risks like that, I think, Evans, if he is going to hold

:27:22. > :28:23.serve consistently today. Beautifully done. This is his

:28:24. > :28:25.strength, his backhand. Evans has to somehow get Anderson a little more

:28:26. > :28:38.off-balance. Suddenly Anderson just a couple of

:28:39. > :28:57.points away... Half an hour gone in this match and

:28:58. > :29:41.set point for Kevin Anderson. Not a good time for a double fault.

:29:42. > :30:06.Bringing up another set point. Kevin Anderson takes the set.

:30:07. > :30:12.Doesn't he look good written mark it as a long way back now perhaps for

:30:13. > :30:13.Dan Evans -- doesn't he look good? The frustration is clear for all to

:30:14. > :30:51.see. does not live. The difference is

:30:52. > :31:03.that Melzer, while a former top ten player, is a bit more up and

:31:04. > :31:10.Anderson. -- a bit more up and down, a bit more emotional. Anderson

:31:11. > :31:19.is turning into a rock. It is amazing that at such a late age he

:31:20. > :31:26.made his way into the top 20, but he looks like staying there for quite

:31:27. > :31:33.some time. He beat Stanislav Wawrinka earlier this year, ended a

:31:34. > :31:40.13 match winning streak for Wawrinka. He lost to Federer in the

:31:41. > :31:45.quarterfinals that he is a player who mixes it with the very best.

:31:46. > :32:02.Last to Davitt for rare in the fourth round of the French Open. --

:32:03. > :32:09.lost to David Ferrer. Kevin Anderson has been struggling with his knees

:32:10. > :32:42.but I know that an Evans has had knee problems as well.

:32:43. > :32:54.There we are. He sailed it over the mountain. Anderson was completely

:32:55. > :33:09.fooled. Perhaps he expected another one of those dinked passing shots.

:33:10. > :33:19.You rightly spoke about the strength of the Anderson two hander, but his

:33:20. > :33:23.forehand is no slouch as well. He will make a few more unforced errors

:33:24. > :33:37.off it but it is a pretty good weapon.

:33:38. > :34:02.A shame. Working so hard just to get the serves back in.

:34:03. > :34:14.I'm par -- UMPIRE: Mr Evans challenging the call.

:34:15. > :34:29.It has been a while since we have had a challenge. The ball stands.

:34:30. > :34:47.UMPIRE: Game, Anderson. Very, very impressive from Anderson. Now it is

:34:48. > :34:53.Evans' turn to serve into the sun. We talked about an Evans feeding off

:34:54. > :34:57.the noise of the crowd but there was no noise for him to feed off at the

:34:58. > :35:02.moment because it is all going the way of Anderson and it is quite

:35:03. > :35:12.short rallies as well, quite brutal to watch. Yeah, they only sing when

:35:13. > :35:15.they are winning! Dan Evans needs to get a few holds of serve to get the

:35:16. > :36:18.crowd into the match. Dan Evans is serving well in this

:36:19. > :36:57.game. First ace of the match. First for Evans.

:36:58. > :37:03.on the line. Run, big man. You can see that he is vulnerable to the lob

:37:04. > :37:36.because he stands very close to the net when he does come forward.

:37:37. > :37:56.And again. What a game from Evans. Come on, he is going to remember

:37:57. > :39:06.that shot. It was on the slide, he knew it was good.

:39:07. > :39:17.such an effective play on this surface, it takes away the chip,

:39:18. > :39:19.returns the chip deep. You can't employ it at every point but once in

:39:20. > :39:40.a while it is a great play. In two minds as he approached that

:39:41. > :40:21.one. Cries of encouragement, just a hint

:40:22. > :41:17.of an opening here. UMPIRE: Game, Anderson. Anderson

:41:18. > :41:23.quickly closes that opening. It is hard to see what Evans might be able

:41:24. > :41:29.to do here. He does not feel he is playing well by his standards but

:41:30. > :41:37.anything you could suggest? He is not being allowed to play well,

:41:38. > :41:38.let's face it. It is more that Anderson has not

:41:39. > :41:41.let's face it. It is more that Anderson has given him much to hit,

:41:42. > :41:51.dominant on serve and on the return as well. This is the direction of

:41:52. > :42:03.Anderson's first serves. A lot of them unreturned. Yes, he is mixing

:42:04. > :42:12.it up well. By contrast, Dan Evans, his first serves thus far. 26%

:42:13. > :42:20.unreturned as compared to 56%, a big, big difference. That is the

:42:21. > :42:25.challenge that Evans has. He is relatively diminutive when you

:42:26. > :42:32.compare him especially to a guy like Anderson, so it is difficult for him

:42:33. > :42:39.just to hit through opponents. You do not get the cheap and easy

:42:40. > :42:48.points, the quick points. He has to work for every point he gets.

:42:49. > :42:56.UMPIRE: Ladies and the men, if you are behind either of the players,

:42:57. > :43:27.please sit down. -- ladies and gentlemen.

:43:28. > :43:41.The other thing about Dan Evans, he is still young, 24, a lot of tennis

:43:42. > :43:50.left in him. Well, yes and no. If he decides to continue playing. He is

:43:51. > :43:55.ranked in the 100s, he is not making a lot of money. So therefore it

:43:56. > :44:04.becomes a test of whether he can stick it out.

:44:05. > :44:06.UMPIRE: Game, Evans. A very impressive game to love brings the

:44:07. > :44:23.court to life. People talk about being in the top

:44:24. > :44:25.100 as being the holy Grail, but if you are at the bottom and you are

:44:26. > :44:35.still not swimming in money. It is not until you reach the top 50

:44:36. > :45:09.where the big money is. I am not suggesting that Nadal and

:45:10. > :45:16.Federer actually swim in money at some grotesque pool party. But it is

:45:17. > :45:24.a much easier life once you make it into that top 50, there are

:45:25. > :45:25.tournaments that you can get into. It becomes a virtuous circle as

:45:26. > :46:08.well. Again, just a hint here that Evans

:46:09. > :46:35.can do some damage on the Anderson serve.

:46:36. > :46:47.That is just cruel. 30-30, second serve, Evans undoubtedly was

:46:48. > :46:50.thinking, right, this is the one I am going to take control of. Didn't

:46:51. > :47:45.even touch it. pays off. And those are not the kind

:47:46. > :47:51.of points that Anderson wants to play against Evans. A lot of shots

:47:52. > :48:20.at his disposal. Frustration again from Evans, a

:48:21. > :48:55.second serve that he thought he should have done much better with.

:48:56. > :49:26.He just can't kill Evans off in this service game.

:49:27. > :49:35.A rueful look at the surface, a little slip from Evans. Evans is now

:49:36. > :49:56.getting into a lot more points than he was in the first set.

:49:57. > :50:04.Anderson holds. The hardest he has had to work for his serve so far but

:50:05. > :50:13.still it looks very good on the board. There has been nothing

:50:14. > :50:24.between the two in this set so still some hope for Dan Evans. He did not

:50:25. > :50:37.play here last year, he played in 2012, lost to Grigor Dimitrov in the

:50:38. > :50:43.quarterfinals. Players have different reparations for Wimbledon,

:50:44. > :50:51.some play in Germany, some in Russia. Things are changing next

:50:52. > :51:01.season, the week of Wimbledon is being shunted back. A bit more space

:51:02. > :51:09.in the grasscourt season, it is getting a bit more room to breathe.

:51:10. > :51:19.A huge improvement, a great improvement to the schedule, no

:51:20. > :51:32.doubt about that. It will make Queen's a lot more meaningful. Dan

:51:33. > :52:34.Evans still worried a bit by the sun on his serve, there.

:52:35. > :52:45.He goes to it again, once more Anderson can't quite deal with it.

:52:46. > :52:49.Ten out of ten for Evans on this ball, he has hit everything right.

:52:50. > :53:00.He was in big trouble but that shot bailed him out. Both players when

:53:01. > :53:18.they have struggled on their serve it has been at that end.

:53:19. > :54:09.Trouble for Evans. Just bullying Evans in this game.

:54:10. > :54:59.UMPIRE: Game, Anderson. Anderson imposes himself there and perhaps

:55:00. > :55:07.now a bridge too far for Dan Evans in this match. There has not been

:55:08. > :55:33.too much to chew on on the Anderson serve.

:55:34. > :55:44.Very decent second serve. When Anderson is serving with the wind,

:55:45. > :56:00.as he is a bit from this side, the second delivery is overpowering.

:56:01. > :57:02.UMPIRE: Game, Anderson. And fat hold to love for Kevin Anderson. --

:57:03. > :57:06.emphatic. It has been a chastening experience for Dan Evans because he

:57:07. > :57:15.must have come in with hopes and dreams of taking it to Anderson but

:57:16. > :57:22.Anderson was a very different player when he went close to beating him in

:57:23. > :57:29.the past. Big guys take longer to develop their games than do smaller

:57:30. > :57:34.characters. Anderson I think for a long time really struggled to grow

:57:35. > :57:43.into his body. You can see he has a slight build to start with, so it

:57:44. > :57:51.has taken him a while to become as consistent as he is now. Once he is

:57:52. > :58:03.here, he is an imposing figure. And improving every year. The winner of

:58:04. > :58:05.this will play Sergiy Stakhovsky or prosper deal from Canada, the number

:58:06. > :59:07.11 seed. -- crosspiece that second serve, too short, not

:59:08. > :59:28.placed well enough into the corners, is punished.

:59:29. > :59:55.Moments like that have been all too rare in this match.

:59:56. > :00:01.dying light, perhaps, but still lovely to watch. Last flicker of the

:00:02. > :00:16.dying light? I like that. There we are. They gave, you saw in

:00:17. > :00:22.that game all that he can do, and the variety in there. He just hasn't

:00:23. > :00:26.been allowed to do it all that often enough.

:00:27. > :00:35.Third round last year, it looks as if he's

:00:36. > :00:41.Third round last year, it going to fail to reach that stage this year.

:00:42. > :00:48.A player who really has dedicated himself, though, Dan Evans, to his

:00:49. > :00:53.game perhaps after, as a young man, being seen as something less than

:00:54. > :00:54.professional. Something he has always denied. A very dedicated

:00:55. > :01:00.player now. Serving for the match, serving with

:01:01. > :01:40.new balls. Well remembered. Of course, Evans

:01:41. > :01:46.with the wind at his back, so it made the Sevenstone just a little

:01:47. > :02:28.easier to execute. -- it made the lob.

:02:29. > :03:21.A brutal ending to a harsh match for Dan Evans, but Kevin Anderson, a

:03:22. > :03:25.very, very impressive winner. He moves through to the third round and

:03:26. > :03:29.as much as Dan Evans enjoyed yesterday, he talked about what a

:03:30. > :03:34.wonderful day it had been, not today. This day belongs to Kevin

:03:35. > :03:39.Anderson and he may well be hard to beat in this championship. Yes, a

:03:40. > :03:45.Bridge too far for Dan Evans, really. Kevin Anderson is a step up

:03:46. > :03:49.in class, served too well, powerful off the ground and returned well. A

:03:50. > :03:52.deserved winner. Anderson moves through in straight sets,

:03:53. > :03:59.comfortable. SUE BARKER: So the number seven seed

:04:00. > :04:04.goes through in straight sets and he is in Andy Murray's quarter of the

:04:05. > :04:10.draw, so a potential future opponent for Andy Murray if they both reach

:04:11. > :04:12.the last eight. Two matches completed on Centre Court,

:04:13. > :04:17.disappointment for Dan Evans, but James Ward will be playing this

:04:18. > :04:22.afternoon against the very talented Grigor Dimitrov. Coming up next, the

:04:23. > :04:35.champion two years ago, marriage village, up against a mad dog from

:04:36. > :04:43.Australia, Matosevic. -- Maren Cilic. The red button will have play

:04:44. > :04:48.through till the end of play, you can see James Duckworth take on

:04:49. > :04:48.Tomas Berdych, the former Wimbledon runner-up.

:04:49. > :04:49.can see James Duckworth take on Tomas Berdych, the former Wimbledon

:04:50. > :04:55.runner-up. Let's hear from Kevin Anderson.

:04:56. > :05:03.Just the ten aces today, is that pretty standard for you? It is

:05:04. > :05:09.always nice to get the ace count up. I felt I hit my spots well and I

:05:10. > :05:12.could have hit a few more, but when you are winning points, it doesn't

:05:13. > :05:17.matter if it is an ace or if the ball is coming back and you are able

:05:18. > :05:21.to finish it on the next one. Your first service such a huge weapon, I

:05:22. > :05:29.am sure you look at the percentages, 59%. It's that good for

:05:30. > :05:32.you? I would like to get it a little bit higher, my average is around the

:05:33. > :05:37.high 60s and it makes life a little bit easier but I am happy with the

:05:38. > :05:41.way I've played, coming forward a bit more, getting my footing on the

:05:42. > :05:46.grass. Dan Evans is a tricky player, especially on the grass and I am

:05:47. > :05:50.very pleased with the win. I am sure people watching today thought it was

:05:51. > :05:56.physically impossible to lob you and Dan did it half a dozen times. Yes,

:05:57. > :06:01.the prep the last few days, a lot of movement and not enough going back,

:06:02. > :06:05.so that is a lesson. You try to come forward and get close to the net and

:06:06. > :06:11.he hit some good lobs. Hopefully, it is the last time. It was too shady

:06:12. > :06:16.you, because you landed one in the last game. -- touche. You are in

:06:17. > :06:22.Andy Murray's quarter, will you look ahead to that? That is the first I

:06:23. > :06:25.know about that, I don't look too far, just one match at a time, that

:06:26. > :06:31.is how I approach every match, doing everything I can to be as prepared

:06:32. > :06:36.as possible. Each match, you face different conditions and obstacles,

:06:37. > :06:41.so it is great to get through today and I will be ready for the next

:06:42. > :06:46.one. If I do play and, it would be great, it is a fantastic tournament

:06:47. > :06:49.and he is a great player -- if I do play Andy. It is always a great

:06:50. > :06:52.experience. Many congratulations, Kevin

:06:53. > :06:57.Anderson. SUE BARKER: A player in form, he

:06:58. > :07:01.reached the fourth round of the French Open. That is Pippa

:07:02. > :07:06.Middleton, she loves tennis, she his here at the Queen's Club to enjoy

:07:07. > :07:10.the tennis and the weather, we are in for a treat this afternoon with

:07:11. > :07:16.some great matches coming up. Some matches being completed on some of

:07:17. > :07:23.the outside courts. David Goffin is through to plague Jo-Wilfried

:07:24. > :07:27.Tsonga. Dmitry Tursunov was a quarterfinalist here some years

:07:28. > :07:34.ago, 2006, he is through in straight sets and he will face Jarkko

:07:35. > :07:40.Niemenen, who came through in the final set against Benoit Paire.

:07:41. > :07:47.Other results from the classic that is taking place, the ladies'

:07:48. > :07:51.championship. A great win for Johanna Konta, a bit of a thumping.

:07:52. > :07:57.But disappointment for Heather Watson, who had three match points

:07:58. > :08:00.in the second set against the Canadian qualifier, Wozniacki, so a

:08:01. > :08:06.disappointment for the newly crowned British number one. She became that

:08:07. > :08:15.because Laura Watson is recovering from wrist surgery. And a brave

:08:16. > :08:23.battle from Naomi Broady, a brave, brave battle from Naomi. Well, we

:08:24. > :08:27.are here in the studio, and we are going to talk a little bit about

:08:28. > :08:31.British tennis, but British tennis with a bit of a difference. Russell

:08:32. > :08:51.Fuller is with us. The big story is developing with bed and a comma he

:08:52. > :08:54.wants to become a British citizen. We first started reporting a few

:08:55. > :08:57.weeks ago. He has been living permanently in Hertfordshire since

:08:58. > :09:02.2011, more recently with his girlfriend, a Slovenian singing

:09:03. > :09:07.star, and now he is trying to make sure he puts all of the ducks in a

:09:08. > :09:15.row so he qualifies to play for the great British Davis Cup team is

:09:16. > :09:19.selected. He last played for Slovenia in February 2012, so he

:09:20. > :09:27.will be eligible come next February for Great Britain's first match of

:09:28. > :09:30.next year. He fulfils the residency requirements and the crucial

:09:31. > :09:35.document he is missing is the British passport and he is trying to

:09:36. > :09:42.convince the Home Office that he has been in this country long enough to

:09:43. > :09:49.fulfil the residency requirements. Normally, you have do prove you have

:09:50. > :09:54.been living permanently in the country for five years. He has

:09:55. > :09:59.certainly been here for three, but before that it is a bit sketchy. It

:10:00. > :10:03.is 50-50 as to whether it proves successful. We will talk more on it,

:10:04. > :10:04.but let's hear Russell's interview with Aljaz Bedene.

:10:05. > :10:07.You are currently applying for British citizenship with a view to

:10:08. > :10:12.switching nationality from Slovenia. Why do you feel so strongly about

:10:13. > :10:20.that? Many things. I really love living here, I love British people.

:10:21. > :10:27.I think, just the nation, living here brings everything out of me,

:10:28. > :10:34.bringing the best out of me. I don't know, I just really feel like I am

:10:35. > :10:39.at home, I feel like I have been living here longer than six years

:10:40. > :10:47.and I just want to give back to Great Britain. How easy is it going

:10:48. > :10:53.to be to get your hands on a British passport? I think I have a strong

:10:54. > :10:59.case. I really want this success. And the end goal is to play Davis

:11:00. > :11:06.Cup for Great Britain? Yes, that is why big quest. I am supporting them

:11:07. > :11:11.in the Davis Cup previously, so I am confident and I am looking forward

:11:12. > :11:14.to it. Even though you have played for Savini, even though it is nearly

:11:15. > :11:19.three years, and you will be qualified under the rules of the

:11:20. > :11:23.competition in 2015, do you think there is an issue if you have played

:11:24. > :11:27.for one country, is it fair to play for another? There were a few

:11:28. > :11:36.negative comments about it but I just played dead rubbers, I never

:11:37. > :11:42.played a competitive match, so I wasn't really fighting for a country

:11:43. > :11:46.in the way I wanted to. So I want to play for Great Britain in a live

:11:47. > :11:50.rubber if I get a chance, and I think there is nothing wrong with

:11:51. > :11:55.that. And it would be exciting to play in the World Group, which is a

:11:56. > :11:58.possibility if the passport comes through in time, with Great Britain

:11:59. > :12:04.in the World Group, potentially alongside Andy Murray. Yes, I am

:12:05. > :12:11.looking forward to it. If this goes through, I will be happy. And you

:12:12. > :12:16.are good on clay? It is my favourite surface. I can play on hard courts,

:12:17. > :12:22.but I was born and raised on clay, so I can help with that.

:12:23. > :12:29.He seems a very gentle personality. It is not a new thing, is it? It has

:12:30. > :12:34.happened before. It has happened in tennis, we have seen a lot of

:12:35. > :12:37.players from Kazakhstan, emerging players who were initially with

:12:38. > :12:41.Russia or, if you go back far enough, baby born in the soggy at

:12:42. > :12:48.union. It happens a lot in other sports with athletes switching to

:12:49. > :12:54.Bahrain or rugby players playing for more than one country -- born in the

:12:55. > :13:00.soviet union. There was a reference to that that there had been a little

:13:01. > :13:03.bit of dissent when the news came out. Dan Evans, his position

:13:04. > :13:12.potentially under threat, said he didn't think it was right if you

:13:13. > :13:16.play for one country to play through another. It is hard to define, for

:13:17. > :13:20.one person, if you have grown up in one country and spent the first 18

:13:21. > :13:24.years there, you will feel nothing other than that nationality but

:13:25. > :13:28.others will feel differently, which is why the rules are in place. He

:13:29. > :13:33.was practising today with Andy Murray, so he has obviously got

:13:34. > :13:38.support from him. I don't think Andy is trying to make a point either

:13:39. > :13:45.way. Just looking for a practice partner. Does he have any other

:13:46. > :13:49.claim than he does fans is it? Is it coming from a mature tennis market,

:13:50. > :13:56.looking for a Grand Slam? You look at the motivation. And if he comes

:13:57. > :14:00.over here, I can understand why Dan Evans and James Ward, the others who

:14:01. > :14:04.have had to cope and deal with our system, this guy pulled seizing and

:14:05. > :14:12.is affecting our commercial operation as individual players --

:14:13. > :14:17.this guy comes in. I am actually ambivalent towards it. It happens in

:14:18. > :14:21.all sorts of other sports, cricket, athletics, people have changed

:14:22. > :14:26.nationality and competed at the Olympics. We had this with Greg

:14:27. > :14:31.Rusedski in the early 90s. It is a similar story, he was living over

:14:32. > :14:35.here and wanted to stay. I think the parallels are very obvious and at

:14:36. > :14:39.the time, there was a great deal of cynicism. We have since come to know

:14:40. > :14:44.Greg Rusedski and we have seen his devotion to the Davis Cup, and this

:14:45. > :14:48.country and to Lucy, which is the greatest emotion, to the wife. So I

:14:49. > :14:55.think he has demonstrated loyalty over time. Mo Farah, didn't he come

:14:56. > :15:01.over here with immigrant parents who were escaping a war-torn country for

:15:02. > :15:06.a better life? That you can sort of understand more than this. He

:15:07. > :15:10.appears to be a nice guy but just to fancy coming over here because he

:15:11. > :15:15.feels British. But they were a number of people prior to the

:15:16. > :15:18.Olympics who came into the British athletics team, they hadn't been

:15:19. > :15:23.living over here. At least he has been living here for a number of

:15:24. > :15:29.years and has made his home here. I don't doubt what he says about that.

:15:30. > :15:33.There has to be a hint about that, doesn't there? Playing in the World

:15:34. > :15:41.Group is a huge thing. It would be very naive. To remind people of the

:15:42. > :15:47.commercial advantages associated with it. The Davis Cup, your

:15:48. > :15:53.rankings depend on how much you get paid for playing that week. You can

:15:54. > :15:56.play more on grass, there are more commercial spin offs. He says he is

:15:57. > :16:00.not here for the money. I think he is very genuine about wanting to

:16:01. > :16:05.make Britain his home, I think he feels very settled here. Who

:16:06. > :16:10.wouldn't? The sun is shining, this is probably the number one city in

:16:11. > :16:16.the world right now, but are there greater things at play? Does he need

:16:17. > :16:18.the LTA support, does he need the people's support? The Home Office

:16:19. > :16:24.rules are probably stronger than ours. That is where he slots in, you

:16:25. > :16:29.can see how it affects the others. Andy is there and it doesn't matter

:16:30. > :16:34.but Dan Evans has a lot of points to defend coming up. He is going to be

:16:35. > :16:40.the English number one after Scottish independence. I thought you

:16:41. > :16:43.were going to bring that up. That ranking is potentially a bit

:16:44. > :16:48.misleading, in that he has been out for six weeks with a wrist injury

:16:49. > :16:51.and has had all sorts of problems over the last 15 months, throughout

:16:52. > :16:57.his career it has been a problem. He was 71 in the world last year,

:16:58. > :17:03.direct entry into the Grand Slam is, got to an ATP final in Chennai, so

:17:04. > :17:08.he has potential. Whether he realises that remains to be seen. He

:17:09. > :17:12.is very good on clay, which is the default surface of choice for any

:17:13. > :17:18.nation that has choice of service against Britain in the Davis Cup and

:17:19. > :17:22.he is good on hard surfaces as well. But will he ultimately persuade

:17:23. > :17:26.those in British tennis that it is good for the team? It is not that

:17:27. > :17:30.Andy Murray calls the shots, but if I was Liam Smith and my star player

:17:31. > :17:37.was uncomfortable... Do you know what I mean? He is not strutting

:17:38. > :17:42.around saying this man plays this man and this and that, but because

:17:43. > :17:47.of his position in the game, he has to clarify his position. Would it be

:17:48. > :17:52.five years and then the choice is taken out of anybody's hands except

:17:53. > :17:58.the Home Office and it is rushed through? I think the rules have

:17:59. > :18:02.changed and the way they look a passport since 2012 has changed. I

:18:03. > :18:07.think you have to prove that you have a permanent residency in the UK

:18:08. > :18:10.for five years, but that is where the high paid lawyers coming, there

:18:11. > :18:16.are often grey areas and I am told it is 50-50 as to whether he gets it

:18:17. > :18:20.this time around. If not now, it might be in a year or two, but he is

:18:21. > :18:26.absolutely determined that he will go ahead with it and played for the

:18:27. > :18:32.Davis Cup team is selected. We will talk more, but stay there, the

:18:33. > :18:35.matches just getting underway. John Lloyd is watching this. John, you

:18:36. > :18:43.have been a Davis Cup captain, how difficult is it? You have to look at

:18:44. > :18:48.your star player, don't you? I would say, yes, that is the most important

:18:49. > :18:51.thing. When you have a team where the number one player is

:18:52. > :18:55.world-class, like Andy Murray, you want to keep him happy, but I don't

:18:56. > :18:59.think it will be a problem. In regards to the rest of the team, the

:19:00. > :19:03.rules are the rules and if it gets to there, we have had the situation

:19:04. > :19:08.with Greg Rusedski and other players in the past and I see no problem

:19:09. > :19:12.with it. If he is accepted as a British citizen, I think the rest of

:19:13. > :19:17.the players will be fine with it eventually. Eventually, but it will

:19:18. > :19:23.cause a few problems at the moment. It is a huge moneyspinner to get the

:19:24. > :19:29.wildcards, Davis Cup exposure, it is going to cost those behind, isn't

:19:30. > :19:33.it? It is, and there are always problems at the beginning, but

:19:34. > :19:37.again, the rules are the rules and if it comes through, then you have

:19:38. > :19:41.just got to get on with it. With all due respect, other than Andy, the

:19:42. > :19:46.rest of the players are not ranked high enough where they can make any

:19:47. > :19:50.real demands and if a player comes in that baby ranked above them, then

:19:51. > :20:00.they have got to accept it. -- that may be. And, Russell, he is a good

:20:01. > :20:04.player, he has a lot to offer, so you have to hope he is the real deal

:20:05. > :20:08.and will be here for many years to come. It could change Britain's

:20:09. > :20:13.Davis Cup chances dramatically, that was the feeling we all left Naples

:20:14. > :20:17.with. Despite fabulous performances by James Ward this year and Dan

:20:18. > :20:20.Evans last year and the supporting cast over the last two or three

:20:21. > :20:26.years, the doubles players like Colin Fleming and Jamie Murray and

:20:27. > :20:31.all those who have contributed, Ross Hutchings, of course, Britain are

:20:32. > :20:36.extremely unlikely to win the Davis Cup without two players who are at

:20:37. > :20:40.least in the top 50. It is going to be an interesting time ahead. We

:20:41. > :20:45.were on Murray watch earlier and we were anticipating a 2pm practice

:20:46. > :20:49.session, when we saw Amelie Mauresmo appear on the balcony. Do you know

:20:50. > :20:54.where they have gone? My sources won't reveal where they have gone,

:20:55. > :20:58.but I don't think they will be practising this afternoon, they will

:20:59. > :21:03.be talking about what is to come. They haven't had a great deal of

:21:04. > :21:07.time together, they met just before the French Open, which is when Andy

:21:08. > :21:12.Murray decided he wanted to work with Amelie Mauresmo, giving it a

:21:13. > :21:17.try. The details were sorted out during the French Open, that was the

:21:18. > :21:23.final sign off from Andy once he was beaten by Rafael Nadal in the

:21:24. > :21:27.semifinals, so they have a bit of time to chat about how they want

:21:28. > :21:31.things to unfold. She is going to get a bit of airtime, maybe even

:21:32. > :21:36.more than Pippa Middleton. I don't think she knows what she has let

:21:37. > :21:40.herself in for, she is going to be chased all over London this weekend

:21:41. > :21:45.and at Wimbledon. But I think she has a lot to offer Andy Murray. That

:21:46. > :21:50.will be tomorrow, and it will be on Centre Court tomorrow when the top

:21:51. > :21:53.seeds get underway. We have Stanislaus Wawrinka as the top seed,

:21:54. > :22:08.but this man is the defending champion.

:22:09. > :22:31.He won here at Queen's and Wimbledon afterwards and he will start his

:22:32. > :22:38.defence against Paul-Henri Mathieu tomorrow. This one, the former

:22:39. > :22:40.champion, Cilic against Matosevic. Let's hand over to our commentators,

:22:41. > :22:50.it is John Lloyd and Andy. Thank you very much indeed,

:22:51. > :22:51.Matosevic, the Australian, just coming off a first victory at Grand

:22:52. > :23:07.Slam level, having last 12. Cilic knows his way around a grass

:23:08. > :23:12.court, that is the shore, a finalist in the last two years and a champion

:23:13. > :23:23.when David Bell Bundy and let himself down a bit. -- Nalbandian.

:23:24. > :23:25.Third round at the French Open, lost to Djokovic. Pushed him for an hour

:23:26. > :23:50.or so. Mark Woodward, working with

:23:51. > :24:34.Wawrinka. It is interesting, him working with

:24:35. > :24:40.someone like Matosevic, because it is so different to the way Mark

:24:41. > :24:46.Woodward played. Polly, sliced backhand. Matosevic is a completely

:24:47. > :24:51.different player -- volley. It makes it an interesting combination. The

:24:52. > :24:55.French Open, when he won his first match, he did 13 rolls on the clay

:24:56. > :25:00.court, fabulous scenes and all of the Australian players came out to

:25:01. > :25:02.see him watch that first match at a -- win that first match at Grand

:25:03. > :25:29.Slam. You say that about Mark Woodforde,

:25:30. > :25:38.the style of play not fitting with Matosevic so well, but Mark

:25:39. > :25:43.Woodforde could compete well from the back of the court. A very

:25:44. > :25:48.thoughtful player. The drills are tremendous, the practice routines.

:25:49. > :25:51.He was coached by a very good Australian coach, a lefty, and he

:25:52. > :28:17.learned a lot from him. Early days in this match. Day two at

:28:18. > :28:22.Queen's Club and the conditions are perfect. The clubhouse with the

:28:23. > :28:29.clock tower there, one of the most familiar sights in tennis. It is

:28:30. > :28:37.only a 250 tournament. Thereafter to hundred and 50s, 500s, then Masters

:28:38. > :28:41.tournaments, 1,000s, then the big boys. We have just at the French

:28:42. > :28:46.Open, there is the Australian Open at the start of the year, then

:28:47. > :28:50.Wimbledon and the US Open. This is such a familiar scene. The clubhouse

:28:51. > :28:56.has not been purpose-built to stage a big international event, so from

:28:57. > :29:03.here until about eight o'clock, it gets a little bit noisy in the bar

:29:04. > :29:06.area and... But it was the first multisports complex in the world,

:29:07. > :29:12.Queen's Club. International football out of the front of here,

:29:13. > :29:17.international racket tournaments, Oxford versus Cambridge in the rugby

:29:18. > :29:21.as well, took place right here. Just not on this particular court. They

:29:22. > :29:27.used to have the polished wood chords in the old days and it was

:29:28. > :29:31.greased lightning on that court. During the winter, it would leak

:29:32. > :29:35.through the roof and you had to put sawdust on the wet wood. It was

:29:36. > :29:41.charming. And if you wanted a point, you would flip a wide serve out and

:29:42. > :29:50.it just wouldn't come back. You either slammed it for a winner or

:29:51. > :29:53.you put them in the wall. The members liked those fast courts, it

:29:54. > :29:57.made them look good. They served and they might get an ace.

:29:58. > :30:03.made them look good. They served Used to hold the under 18 indoor

:30:04. > :30:09.Championships here, I was 5-5 in a tie-break semifinal one year and the

:30:10. > :30:15.members came on and said "We have got the court booked."

:30:16. > :30:22.Mark Woodforde wouldn't like where he was hitting that volley. That was

:30:23. > :30:26.a strange sort of point. I think he liked the idea of the serve and

:30:27. > :30:27.volley but he got stuck behind the service line and didn't know quite

:30:28. > :32:27.what to do with it. That is a bit sloppy there. He

:32:28. > :32:31.looked a bit casual on that poorly, really. It was a brilliant server

:32:32. > :32:34.and he had so much time on this one, probably too much time. -- it was a

:32:35. > :33:08.brilliant serve. And on that point with Cilic, this

:33:09. > :33:13.is where I think he struggles, Cilic, at the high level, on his

:33:14. > :33:19.defensive play. That was not an easy shot, but the likes of Murray, they

:33:20. > :33:22.would have dog that one back, they are a bit more flexible and have

:33:23. > :33:27.more speed and would have dogged that ball back. He has certainly

:33:28. > :33:34.improved on moving around the court, but at the top, top level, it hurts

:33:35. > :33:47.a little bit. -- it hurts him a little bit.

:33:48. > :33:53.The correction came from the umpire, not questioned by Marin

:33:54. > :33:59.Cilic, because she could have challenged the overrule, but no.

:34:00. > :34:03.A lot of people have said, I know Hawk-Eye at the French Open? I

:34:04. > :34:10.agree. If you have got it, use it. It is perfect, just about.

:34:11. > :34:13.I suppose they don't think they need it because the clay leaves the

:34:14. > :34:16.marks. Yes, but those marks are open to

:34:17. > :34:19.interpretation. I absolutely agree with that. And

:34:20. > :34:58.they are slightly raised, as well. A big point.

:34:59. > :35:01.Cilic was a little bit short with a lot of those ground strokes, they

:35:02. > :35:11.were just past the service box area, and really we are waiting to

:35:12. > :36:14.be hit away, but Matosevic did not do enough with those chances.

:36:15. > :36:20.That is the second missed volley in this game. Perhaps after two or

:36:21. > :36:23.three matches on this surface you would not expect him to miss, and

:36:24. > :36:45.that was a big one, because it is now break point.

:36:46. > :36:51.And that is long, and that is the reward for the Australian, who is

:36:52. > :36:57.animated, as is his coach. Breakthrough, break serve.

:36:58. > :37:08.Of course, Matosevic has had quite a lot of tennis on the grass courts

:37:09. > :37:14.already. He made a final run at a challenger in Nottingham last week.

:37:15. > :37:18.He defeated Dan Evans en route to the final, lost to Marcos Baghdatis

:37:19. > :37:23.in that final. That is a quality challenger. Because of the placement

:37:24. > :37:26.in the calendar, that challenger has a draw to be proud of. Well done

:37:27. > :37:31.there. But Marcos Baghdatis was the winner.

:37:32. > :37:36.It is a bit like when you play a qualifier at Wimbledon. You come in

:37:37. > :37:40.and they have won three matches and they are match hardened. Sometimes

:37:41. > :37:45.they are nasty to play in the first round. Matosevic won his first Grand

:37:46. > :37:49.Slam winner at the French, so that is his confidence there, then he

:37:50. > :37:52.beat some good grasscourt players at the challenger, and Marin Cilic

:37:53. > :37:56.seems a little unsure of his fitting here. He does not seem to be moving

:37:57. > :37:59.that well and his second serve as a little unsure of his fitting here.

:38:00. > :38:01.He does not seem to be moving that well and his second serve is really

:38:02. > :38:04.getting attacked by Matosevic. He is really trying to get ahead of the

:38:05. > :38:15.rally and try to build it, which is a good tactic. -- he is a little

:38:16. > :38:44.unsure of his footing. A long way to go yet.

:38:45. > :38:51.Well, it is not easy to lob a giant. And not easy, actually, to hit

:38:52. > :38:53.overhead away in this particular arena.

:38:54. > :39:01.Of all the flags are saying one thing, the ball says another. --

:39:02. > :39:03.although the flags. It was swerving around all over the

:39:04. > :39:15.place. He is playing very aggressively, the

:39:16. > :40:34.Australian, he is taking the ball on and coming in a lot.

:40:35. > :40:40.Toogood, and he was absolutely right there.

:40:41. > :40:45.That was the Cilic that we have seen so often here at Queen's Club. Big

:40:46. > :41:09.ground strokes, slapping that forehand away.

:41:10. > :41:17.Very aggressive on the break point down, had to cover a lot of court to

:41:18. > :41:21.get over there and cut that forehand volley off. It was coming down the

:41:22. > :41:23.line and you can see, good footwork to get out of there and a little

:41:24. > :42:30.angled volley to finish the point. Matosevic's game is not a thing of

:42:31. > :42:33.beauty, is it? It is not watching someone flow around the court, but

:42:34. > :42:37.you get the feeling he knows how to get the best out of his game.

:42:38. > :42:41.Yes, there is a grinder. Six foot four, he may as well make the most

:42:42. > :42:45.of that physicality. Years of Croatian descent. -- he is of

:42:46. > :44:14.Croatian descent. Well, that was a reasonably big

:44:15. > :44:18.point here, really. He had mishit from Cilic, and really

:44:19. > :44:22.he should have put that ball away and just sort of pushed it into the

:44:23. > :44:42.middle of the net. Strange from the Australian. -- strange shot.

:44:43. > :44:51.It is a gift, that kick serve that he has.

:44:52. > :44:57.When he gets it right it is so deadly, because you are so far off

:44:58. > :45:00.the court when you have no chance of chasing the ball down. Sometimes in

:45:01. > :45:07.the forehand court it sometimes gets in the middle of the box and it can

:45:08. > :45:13.be hit. Tidily done in the end.

:45:14. > :45:18.Trailing by a break of serve to the Australian number two, Matosevic.

:45:19. > :45:23.Lleyton Hewitt, number 43 in the WorldCom is the Australian number

:45:24. > :45:27.one. Matosevic is number 60 in the world,

:45:28. > :45:31.the Australian number two. Anatomic is 82nd rank in the world

:45:32. > :45:35.at the moment. They have for micro-guys in the top

:45:36. > :45:44.100. -- they have four guys. The world

:45:45. > :45:56.has joined the game of tennis, it has been turned into a global game.

:45:57. > :45:59.Would you have played Rod Laver? That generation?

:46:00. > :46:07.It was after, I did play them right at the end of their career. I played

:46:08. > :46:11.Gonzales, Emerson, all of them. My theory was, you had a chance if you

:46:12. > :46:18.got them when they were 40 years old. Why play them when they were

:46:19. > :46:23.younger? You had no chance! When you had fluffy hair, you would

:46:24. > :46:35.have been 17, 18, would you? Tony Roach, Phil Dent.

:46:36. > :46:38.I played all of those. Not a bad bunch of Aussies.

:46:39. > :46:43.One of the first places they would have come is here to Queen's Club,

:46:44. > :46:51.both to use as a practice base and to play, as well. You'll is one of

:46:52. > :46:52.the latest incarnations of Australian tennis, Matosevic. --

:46:53. > :47:10.here is one. He is just not timing the ball at

:47:11. > :47:14.the moment, Marin Cilic. Sometimes the first match on grass is always a

:47:15. > :47:23.bit dicey, but again, it is a big opportunity there to set up 0-15. A

:47:24. > :47:40.resident -- relatively easy ball, just did not finish the shot.

:47:41. > :47:46.You can get up at like that just by the tube station. -- you can get a

:47:47. > :48:38.packet. I bet Cilic is regretting that game

:48:39. > :48:42.where he missed those too easy volleys and lost his serve. Years

:48:43. > :48:45.trying to find his rhythm on what is turning into quite a blustery day

:48:46. > :48:49.here at Queen's Club. First thing is first for Cilic, he

:48:50. > :49:31.has to hold this then think about breaking.

:49:32. > :49:47.He just got put off his rhythm with this slip.

:49:48. > :50:25.At wasp was quite interested in his headband.

:50:26. > :50:30.I think he thought he had this one, Matosevic, and was a bit surprised

:50:31. > :51:51.when he missed it. Not a thrilling tennis matches so

:51:52. > :51:55.far, not much has happened here. At times there have been one or two

:51:56. > :52:00.mistakes in the match. I suppose the highlight for most people, for me as

:52:01. > :52:04.well, to be honest, would be the James Ward Grigor Dimitrov match,

:52:05. > :52:09.which is coming up next. I am really looking forwards to see an Dimitrov.

:52:10. > :52:14.But that is for a later time. Matosevic now just has to be good

:52:15. > :52:19.and professional on this game. He is getting a lot of first serves in, 14

:52:20. > :52:25.out of 18 for the match. Cilic will have to try and find some

:52:26. > :52:30.inspiration from somewhere. He has to keep being aggressive, so

:52:31. > :52:34.far he has been attacking whenever he can come and he has to make sure

:52:35. > :52:38.he does not ease off this game and almost hope for mistakes. He has to

:52:39. > :52:42.go after the ball like he has been and keep that acting. It has been

:52:43. > :52:46.very impressive committee has been coming in a lot and volleyed well

:52:47. > :52:52.when he has had the opportunity. They have played three times before

:52:53. > :53:00.and Cilic has won all of those encounters.

:53:01. > :53:05.If you see a two set lead either way overturned, as they did in their

:53:06. > :53:08.last game, it is an experience you remember for life.

:53:09. > :53:14.The Australian Open last year, first round, Cilic in straight sets, Monte

:53:15. > :53:19.Carlo earlier this year, Cilic in the first round in three sets.

:53:20. > :53:26.Matosevic has never beaten his opponent today.

:53:27. > :53:30.But he can take one of those big Australian steps towards it if he

:53:31. > :54:18.can maintain his first serve here. That is a mistake you just would not

:54:19. > :54:25.expect from Cilic there. The opponent serving for the set, down

:54:26. > :54:29.15-0, second serve, relic -- relatively comfortable backhand and

:54:30. > :54:34.then makes the error. He has another opportunity here.

:54:35. > :55:56.I will be surprised if he gives his opponent another freebie.

:55:57. > :56:05.Taken on his second set point, Matosevic of Australia won the set

:56:06. > :56:08.to the good playing against former champion here Marin Cilic, who has

:56:09. > :56:12.worked to do to try to find his rhythm.

:56:13. > :56:14.STUDIO: It shows what getting a few grasscourt matches under your belt

:59:25. > :59:29.or is that the Dutch version might I think they would have to be.

:59:30. > :59:36.But the Dutch are a big bunch. All I know is that Marin Cilic has

:59:37. > :59:40.to get his act in gear here. That was a poor first set, he did not

:59:41. > :59:44.look right at their com his movement, he was unsure of his

:59:45. > :59:49.footing, just there was no explosion in any of his shots or anything. He

:59:50. > :00:07.has to get going, his opponent has dug himself in here.

:00:08. > :00:15.The man who guided Marin Cilic too much of his success was Bob Brett,

:00:16. > :00:23.who has been employed by the Chief Executive of the LTA, to have a look

:00:24. > :01:16.at the performance set up in his country. More on that in a minute.

:01:17. > :01:19.a half-volley one moment and then plays that. He is a difficult man to

:01:20. > :01:24.play against, he doesn't give you much with them. What is coming next?

:01:25. > :02:15.-- much rhythm. We have a new chief executive of the

:02:16. > :02:21.Lawn Tennis Association, Michael Downey. One of the new things he did

:02:22. > :02:24.on taking up his appointment was to get Bob Brett, a vastly experienced

:02:25. > :02:29.coach, he has been out there for donkey's years with various

:02:30. > :02:34.players, including Marin Cilic, he got Bob Brett to do a 60 day review

:02:35. > :02:37.of the performance of tennis in the UK and I understand he will be

:02:38. > :02:41.interviewed here on Friday, and one of the things he is expected to say

:02:42. > :02:50.is the new boss of the performance side of things, or at least integral

:02:51. > :03:00.to it, is Bob Brett. Top-class man. Knows his stuff. We will see now.

:03:01. > :03:14.That is tremendous. That was a good return from Cilic. Improvising

:03:15. > :05:05.there, really short backswing, but directed it beautifully.

:05:06. > :05:19.Going well so far at the tournament. Tony Roach there,

:05:20. > :05:25.talking to Leighton. He dismantled Gimeno-Traver yesterday, four times

:05:26. > :05:29.champion here. They certainly support their players. That was

:05:30. > :05:34.certainly a feature over the years, when the Aussies were playing, and

:05:35. > :05:37.there was a bunch of them in the draw in those days, they would all

:05:38. > :05:45.go out and watch their fellow players play. Very close-knit. The

:05:46. > :05:53.generation which came after you was everything from Simon Newell, Dyke,

:05:54. > :06:02.Mark Woodforde, John was one of the older ones in that.

:06:03. > :06:10.They all travelled and Nails Carmichael would work with them.

:06:11. > :06:12.They worked harder than everyone else, I think, because they were a

:06:13. > :06:39.unit. Nice to watch. And then, of course,

:06:40. > :06:45.you had Pat Rafter afterwards, a fabulous player. The first time he

:06:46. > :06:50.came around, I had the misfortune to play him in Asia in a challenge. He

:06:51. > :06:54.was out with his mum, they didn't know how to get the practice balls,

:06:55. > :07:00.how to get a car organised, where the bus was, but timetables, where

:07:01. > :07:08.the food was. He was wonderful. He had no backhand, but what an

:07:09. > :07:14.athlete. Him and Tommy Hope played doubles together. Happy days.

:07:15. > :07:21.Well, you know, if an Australian is putting on suncream in London, we

:07:22. > :07:29.are doing something right. You would think he would be used to it, he

:07:30. > :07:33.lives in Palm Springs now. You need to be slapping on a lot of suntan

:07:34. > :07:43.lotion in Palm Springs, but his Wishaw. -- that is for sure. The

:07:44. > :07:51.weather forecast has favoured the tournament. Stephen Farrow is the

:07:52. > :07:55.director. They have been blessed with a forecast, they are getting

:07:56. > :08:01.all through the matches. Last year was a bit more difficult, that's for

:08:02. > :08:07.sure. I suspect that is a student on the right-hand side. Mid afternoon

:08:08. > :08:12.here at Queen's Club, bathed in sunshine, great tennis ahead, with

:08:13. > :08:20.Grigor Dimitrov, certainly known for his tennis, but a crossover star as

:08:21. > :08:24.well, Maria Sharapova's boyfriend to some, a brilliant tennis player to

:08:25. > :08:43.us. He is on against James Ward after this.

:08:44. > :08:48.It is like the wind held that a little bit. It is a bit blustery out

:08:49. > :08:55.there. You get the position right and then lose your balance.

:08:56. > :09:00.Finally, Cilic is ahead in a service game.

:09:01. > :10:01.He is mixing this serve and volley tactic at good times. Not doing it

:10:02. > :10:05.too often, not giving Cilic a target, but then throws one in 43 or

:10:06. > :10:08.four points, keeps his opponent off balance. A good tactical match so

:10:09. > :10:23.far from the Australian. Not a huge serve, but it is very

:10:24. > :10:26.accurate today, finding the corners. The last one was 123 but if you hit

:10:27. > :11:29.the lines, that is all you need. Matosevic there with a little

:11:30. > :11:35.gesture to his coach, with his hands, just saying, keep going

:11:36. > :11:38.forwards. That is what he has been doing successfully so far. He

:11:39. > :11:41.doesn't want to get out of that game plan, it has so far been very

:11:42. > :12:08.successful. That was definitely long.

:12:09. > :12:14.UMPIRE: Mr Matosevic is challenging the call. It felt miles long. No

:12:15. > :12:17.overrule, preferring the electronics to take care of it. It was quite a

:12:18. > :12:42.big miss. In the old days, before Hawker,

:12:43. > :12:45.there were some calls that were beyond belief. I mean come on you

:12:46. > :12:50.work hard, get yourself into a position and there were tennis balls

:12:51. > :12:51.that were eight or nine inches out that weren't called. So Hawk-eye,

:12:52. > :13:15.what a plus. That second serve, that is the serve

:13:16. > :13:19.I was talking about. If he gets it out wide on the backhand, it can be

:13:20. > :13:23.awesome, but when he doesn't get it right, it sits in the middle of the

:13:24. > :13:28.service box and gives you plenty of time to step round. I think he is

:13:29. > :13:31.managing his game extremely well. A lot of bad credit goes to Mark

:13:32. > :13:33.Woodforde. You can sense the game plan with Matosevic, playing with

:13:34. > :13:45.purpose and playing for his coach. I think suffice to say, I will be

:13:46. > :13:49.surprised if that wasn't the biggest forehand we have seen in the

:13:50. > :13:53.tournament so far. That was in the slot, wasn't it? He just cracked

:13:54. > :14:17.that. It is brilliant. He is having a

:14:18. > :14:21.lovely time. He has broken him and if he can hold from here, he will

:14:22. > :14:33.have his first victory over Marin Cilic. Playing with purpose, John.

:14:34. > :14:38.Absolutely. That last point, the Love 40, this was the Mark Woodforde

:14:39. > :14:42.influence. This was old school. If you look at this return, he hits

:14:43. > :14:50.that and then comes in right behind it. He took it early and then moved

:14:51. > :14:56.in, a little short backhand slice. He is following the ball in very

:14:57. > :15:01.well. He really is. There are elements of his game, having played

:15:02. > :15:05.Mark Woodforde for many years, there are elements of his game that are

:15:06. > :15:10.like an exact replica. Just getting into position and just asking the

:15:11. > :15:14.opponent the question, can you get the ball over me past me, on a grass

:15:15. > :15:19.court where the ball is bouncing low, your first match? I don't think

:15:20. > :15:25.he can. I think it is a very efficient performance so far. What

:15:26. > :15:29.he is doing is taking the time away from Cilic. Cilic looks very slow

:15:30. > :15:33.because he is being attacked from different angles with ground

:15:34. > :15:38.strokes, short ones, serve and volley, mixing it up, and Cilic

:15:39. > :15:42.hasn't been able to get a rhythm. He is feeling his way into this match

:15:43. > :15:46.but unfortunately there is a clock going and if he doesn't get his act

:15:47. > :15:50.together very quickly, he is going out of this tournament. He has still

:15:51. > :16:12.got time but he has to do some sort of damage on his opponent's serve.

:16:13. > :16:22.It is difficult to believe that Cilic won't break him once in this

:16:23. > :16:32.match, he is such a good return. -- returner.

:16:33. > :16:39.That was a good opportunity, it was not a good approach shot from

:16:40. > :17:44.Matosevic. It sat up and Cilic should have made it.

:17:45. > :18:11.Just a good mixture there of pace and spin.

:18:12. > :18:21.It is a hold with the old tennis balls and from zero 15 down. You are

:18:22. > :18:30.looking for signs of a lower ranked player cracking now and again, but

:18:31. > :18:37.nothing. Strong and solid. This is one of only five grass court events

:18:38. > :18:40.that are played on tour at the moment. Next year, between the

:18:41. > :18:41.French Open and Wimbledon, there will be an extra

:18:42. > :18:44.moment. Next year, between the French Open and week, so Nottingham

:18:45. > :18:49.will be back on as a two event, which is great. So each grass court

:18:50. > :18:52.match ahead of Wimbledon is important for these players. They

:18:53. > :18:57.need as many as they can before playing Wimbledon.

:18:58. > :19:07.When you think about it, the amazing tennis that we have seen, well,

:19:08. > :19:11.forever, at Wimbledon, but now, with an extra week, whether that is to

:19:12. > :19:12.rest or to play more tournaments or more matches, the standard is going

:19:13. > :19:34.to be even better. It is too long. No control at all.

:19:35. > :19:41.The approach shot was very cautious and the volley, again, very

:19:42. > :19:48.cautious. He just pushed that volley, there was no feel all

:19:49. > :20:56.confidence in that shot. -- feel all confidence.

:20:57. > :21:07.UMPIRE: Mr Matosevic is challenging the call.

:21:08. > :21:48.Two second serves. At 042, and then at 30-40 and didn't make a return.

:21:49. > :21:52.He's looking ahead to much here -- at zero -40. He is seeing the

:21:53. > :22:07.finishing flag, but he still has a lot of work to do.

:22:08. > :22:19.Just shows you how much of this game is psychological. It is match over

:22:20. > :22:24.at 5-2, serving for it. Exactly, thinking too far ahead. He has

:22:25. > :23:17.hardly missed a ball and this is the worst game he has played.

:23:18. > :23:30.Now we have an interesting game coming up. Seven time champion Roger

:23:31. > :23:45.Federer is playing doubles with an old friend from Switzerland today. A

:23:46. > :23:51.lot of them play doubles either here or at Halle, just getting some

:23:52. > :23:59.matches. I'm not sure he does that every year. You can put whatever you

:24:00. > :24:03.want to on a contract, it would affect him. He is looking to get his

:24:04. > :24:08.matches. Nadal is over there as well. We have Stan Wawrinka here,

:24:09. > :24:14.the Australian Open champion, he and Andy Murray will form the

:24:15. > :24:20.centrepiece of tomorrow's play. The match that she is looking forward

:24:21. > :24:29.to, and her mates... I say that, I may know what I'm talking about for

:24:30. > :24:34.once, Grigor Dimitrov, he is up next against James Ward. What is that

:24:35. > :24:41.fashion statement? I am a bit worried about that. Gets the job

:24:42. > :24:47.done. That is what Matosevic has to do after that awful game there, from

:24:48. > :24:51.zero -40. This one is all in the mind now, and Cilic suddenly has

:24:52. > :25:27.some hope. Zero -30, having had the match one

:25:28. > :27:37.previously, virtually. He is taking his time though,

:27:38. > :27:39.Matosevic, which is good. He hasn't served well this game. He needs a

:27:40. > :29:07.first serve here, big-time. He did well there, really, because

:29:08. > :29:11.he looked very shaky at the beginning of that game. Yes, there

:29:12. > :29:16.were a lot of glances over to the coach. You just thought for a moment

:29:17. > :29:22.that possibly he might be hoping the victory, instead of going after it.

:29:23. > :29:27.But he came back again. He has had 0-15 twice in this set, and a 0-30

:29:28. > :29:37.in that. Serving to say in the match, the

:29:38. > :32:18.former champion, Marin Cilic. -- stay.

:32:19. > :32:23.a capacity day in the crowd here. The West stand is what you are

:32:24. > :32:31.looking towards. Heathrow is around 11 miles away

:32:32. > :32:35.from the clubhouse. If you want to get here tomorrow, the cube is a

:32:36. > :32:44.really good idea, because I think there is a black cab strike. -- the

:32:45. > :32:49.Tube. I think they are complaining about

:32:50. > :32:54.those companies that use GPS. One of those taxi drivers is James

:32:55. > :33:00.Ward's dad. Murray is in action.

:33:01. > :33:05.But Dimitrov was next. Matosevic, what he would love this

:33:06. > :33:12.to get a start in this game. He was very shaky on the last game,

:33:13. > :33:17.but got through it. Luckily for him, Cilic is just off today and does not

:33:18. > :33:21.seem to be able to take advantage of that sort of gift he was almost

:33:22. > :33:26.given on the last service game. This will be an interesting service game

:33:27. > :33:27.here. Matosevic obviously hoping for a lot more first serves than he had

:33:28. > :33:48.in his last game. game, you are in it, and then you

:33:49. > :33:50.just swipe a forehand. It is very careless for someone of his

:33:51. > :33:55.standard. You just don't expect it from Cilic.

:33:56. > :34:02.He has played so well here and he should make those shots.

:34:03. > :34:10.That is just so wild, he is not giving his opponent a chance to

:34:11. > :34:15.choke. Admirable first serve percentage

:34:16. > :34:21.from the Australian. Seven out of ten first serves in

:34:22. > :35:04.over the match. A couple more and he could be out of here.

:35:05. > :35:14.Free gifts from a former champion and finalist for the last two years.

:35:15. > :35:25.Most unusual. We will be saying goodbye to Marin Cilic.

:35:26. > :35:37.That is tremendous work. He has fired one up into the stands

:35:38. > :35:45.and celebrates rightly for the first victory over Cilic. He is through to

:35:46. > :35:49.the next round. I mean, we were talking about Cilic,

:35:50. > :35:51.and he certainly was not at his best by any means, but I great

:35:52. > :36:07.performance by the Aussie. The number nine seed goes out, 6-4,

:36:08. > :36:13.6-4. STUDIO: A big name to fall, Marin

:36:14. > :36:16.Cilic, champion here in 2012, leaves Centre Court and indeed leaves the

:36:17. > :36:19.Queen's Club. He is out, and this is on Centre

:36:20. > :36:23.Court. We have seen Feliciano Lopez go

:36:24. > :36:28.through, that match held over from yesterday after the rain, then Kevin

:36:29. > :36:33.Anderson overpowered Dan Evans, the wildcard from Great Britain.

:36:34. > :36:36.Matosevic is through to the second round. Coming up next, what a treat,

:36:37. > :36:45.Grigor Dimitrov, the number four seed, with James Ward. We will be

:36:46. > :36:50.staying with that on BBC Two through until six o'clock, but we will be

:36:51. > :36:53.through on the red button to see James Duckworth against Tomas

:36:54. > :36:59.Berdych. Let's hear from the winner, Marinko

:37:00. > :37:02.Matosevic, of Australia. A good week last week in Nottingham, reaching

:37:03. > :37:04.the final, losing to Marcos Baghdatis.

:37:05. > :37:09.Mark Woodforde, his coach, will be delighted with that.

:37:10. > :37:13.A couple of terrific weeks, years through to the next round and has

:37:14. > :37:17.put out a proven man on the grass courts today.

:37:18. > :37:23.Name tab -- Matosevic through on straight sets on Centre Court.

:37:24. > :37:25.Let's hear from the winner. He is courtside speaking to John

:37:26. > :37:30.Inverdale. Congratulations, what a fantastic

:37:31. > :37:33.victory for. Yes, it was a good win over top ten

:37:34. > :37:37.finalists from last year. I just want to thank the crowd for

:37:38. > :37:45.their help and support today. They are uploading you in return.

:37:46. > :37:48.-- they are uploading you. And Aussie getting support from a

:37:49. > :37:51.British crowd pressure might yes, I think you guys feel sorry for us

:37:52. > :37:57.after getting beat in the Ashes. When you come to the grass, you must

:37:58. > :38:04.be feeling pretty optimistic? Yes, last week was great, in

:38:05. > :38:08.Nottingham, it will be up doing competition like it used to be and I

:38:09. > :38:13.feel more comfortable on the grass, it is probably my favourite surface.

:38:14. > :38:17.I don't want to accentuate the negative, but you played Andy Murray

:38:18. > :38:20.in the French Open a couple of weeks ago, what is it like playing against

:38:21. > :38:24.him? He is one of the best players in the

:38:25. > :38:29.world. I think he has the best skill level on tour, as good as Roger. He

:38:30. > :38:33.is one of the two-time Grand Slam champions and Olympic gold

:38:34. > :38:36.medallists, one of the best out there.

:38:37. > :38:39.I am sure you are heartily sick of this question, but the nickname mad

:38:40. > :38:44.dog that you have, what have you done to deserve that?

:38:45. > :38:54.I don't know, I think someone made it up, people keep referring to it.

:38:55. > :38:54.Many congratulations, good luck in the next round.

:38:55. > :39:12.Thank you, guys. And there is Arnold Palmer in the

:39:13. > :39:15.middle. The luck of the Irish!

:39:16. > :39:35.Greg Norman, the champion for 1986. Those call black eyes are burning.

:39:36. > :39:36.-- coal black eyes. Thompson puts finishing touch to the

:39:37. > :39:44.player. Would you believe that?

:39:45. > :39:52.The open Championships will be live from Royal Liverpool, last held

:39:53. > :39:56.there in 2006, won by Tiger Woods and we hope he will be fit enough to

:39:57. > :39:59.play there again this year. The Open Championship and other big

:40:00. > :40:03.event in this wonderful summer of sport.

:40:04. > :40:09.Over on Court Number One, Marcos Baghdatis has come through in his

:40:10. > :40:15.match against Bradley Klahn of the United States.

:40:16. > :40:19.He was in the Australian Open final in 2006, the same year he reached

:40:20. > :40:24.the Wimbledon semifinal. Marcos Baghdatis, one of the biggest

:40:25. > :40:28.characters on Court, coming through on Court Number One.

:40:29. > :40:31.After the match he spoke to John. You are playing well at the moment,

:40:32. > :40:35.you had your first tournament victory in years that the weekend,

:40:36. > :40:38.how are you feeling? I am feeling good, it is nice to be

:40:39. > :40:46.back, especially playing five matches in a week. It is good

:40:47. > :40:50.training. I am feeling great. I was happy with how I was playing last

:40:51. > :40:54.week, today was tricky conditions but I am pleased I got through.

:40:55. > :40:57.You said you have taken a couple of months out of tennis to spend time

:40:58. > :41:00.with your family, does that change your attitude to the game when you

:41:01. > :41:04.come back? A bit, you are fresher, you accept

:41:05. > :41:09.things a bit more than usual. When you travel so much you get so tired

:41:10. > :41:14.of the same things, watching the same people all the time.

:41:15. > :41:18.Do you forget sometimes why you play the game?

:41:19. > :41:23.Yes, for sure, it comes to the point where you start doubting why you are

:41:24. > :41:27.there, what am I doing here? That is not the way I want to play and for

:41:28. > :41:32.me it was a great mental recovery just to stop for two months, get my

:41:33. > :41:36.things together and spend a lot of time with family. That is very

:41:37. > :41:42.important and I am healthy, I am back, feeling motivated. It is good.

:41:43. > :41:45.A nice, easy match in the next ring for you.

:41:46. > :41:50.Yes, very easy! It will be a tough one, but I am feeling good. I will

:41:51. > :41:53.go out of their run to just try to play the way I have been playing in

:41:54. > :41:57.the last few weeks. I'm a bit tired mentally from last week, but I will

:41:58. > :42:02.give it my best, I will fight for every point and see what comes.

:42:03. > :42:06.At a theatre that match, you saluted the crowd and the crowd love you,

:42:07. > :42:09.they gave you a huge ovation. When you do not play, when you take

:42:10. > :42:14.months away from the circuit, do you like that are what you misquoted

:42:15. > :42:19.Mark I think that is the only moment you miss, the emotions the crowd

:42:20. > :42:22.give you and winning a point, the crowd clapping and looking at the

:42:23. > :42:28.crowd and they shall use much love and respect, that is the most

:42:29. > :42:32.important thing you miss. -- they sure you so much love.

:42:33. > :42:36.I hopefully I will get back and enjoy more times.

:42:37. > :42:40.It is good to see you back. When John posed the question about

:42:41. > :42:45.that next difficult match, he is up against Stan Wawrinka, the top seed.

:42:46. > :42:50.Marcos Baghdatis was a winner in three sets on Court Number One.

:42:51. > :42:53.Edouard Roger-Vasselin came through in three sets against Evgeny Donskoy

:42:54. > :42:57.of Russia. He will face Nicolas Mahut of the

:42:58. > :43:04.next round, the fellow Frenchman he has been a doubles partner of us.

:43:05. > :43:09.Also, Vasek Pospisil of Canada, the 11th seed, a winner in three sets on

:43:10. > :43:15.some of the outside courts today. Next up on Centre Court, the one we

:43:16. > :43:18.have really been looking forward to, James Ward coming on to, James Ward

:43:19. > :43:23.coming onto court against Grigor Dimitrov. There is a real stir here,

:43:24. > :43:26.a couple of years ago he reached the semifinals and he is the rising star

:43:27. > :43:36.of the game, ranked 13th in the world. Many people, including John

:43:37. > :43:42.Lloyd, thinks he could come through here and win it. We will be right

:43:43. > :43:50.back with that match in a moment. Tomorrow, Andy Murray will be on

:43:51. > :43:52.court against Paul Henri Matthieu, who was practising today with Stan

:43:53. > :43:58.Wawrinka. There is Stan, who is the top seed

:43:59. > :44:02.in the Championship. There is Andy Murray's up on it

:44:03. > :44:06.tomorrow, let us hear from him and how he is approaching the match.

:44:07. > :44:10.When you see that you have Andy Murray in the next round, what are

:44:11. > :44:15.your first thoughts? First of all, to try to win my first

:44:16. > :44:19.match! Every match is difficult, so I am happy with a victory in the

:44:20. > :44:23.first round. It is always interesting to play here on the

:44:24. > :44:25.grass, he is playing at home so it will be interesting.

:44:26. > :44:29.You have never played against him on grass.

:44:30. > :44:31.No, it is the first time and the first time I have played on Centre

:44:32. > :44:35.Court here. I have played on Centre Court

:44:36. > :44:39.everywhere in the world. As a player do you keep a list of

:44:40. > :44:43.the Centre Court you have not played on and tick them off question mark

:44:44. > :44:49.yes, I played on all of them. I I had not played on this one, so

:44:50. > :44:53.my list is not going to be empty. I do not want to raise a difficult

:44:54. > :44:58.subject, but you do not have a great record against Andy, do you?

:44:59. > :45:03.Honestly, if you say so, I think no. I don't know if I beat him once.

:45:04. > :45:10.You haven't. I remember once in Miami I was up and I lost that

:45:11. > :45:14.match. He is tough to play for me because

:45:15. > :45:17.he can mix it up really well and he is a really tough player. It will be

:45:18. > :45:19.difficult. Obviously you will be playing

:45:20. > :45:23.against the crowd, as well. Does that affect you at all or do

:45:24. > :45:32.you live in a bubble by yourself? I am used to it. I used to play the

:45:33. > :45:35.Davis Cup by what -- a lot and I am used to the crowd.

:45:36. > :45:37.Well, best of luck, maybe not too much.

:45:38. > :45:40.Thank you. The crowd will not faze him, he is

:45:41. > :45:45.an experienced competitor and he will be facing Andy Murray tomorrow.

:45:46. > :45:48.You saw the crowds of kids and spectators around the practice

:45:49. > :45:57.courts watching the tennis and getting the odd autograph or two.

:45:58. > :46:00.All Henri Mathieu... They are walking away thinking, who

:46:01. > :46:05.is that? I did not want him to sign that ball! There is John

:46:06. > :46:09.entertaining the crowds on the practice courts, as well. He is

:46:10. > :46:14.enjoying himself. Yes, it is his big moment. I hope

:46:15. > :46:22.you remembered who he is pretending to be. -- I hope he remembers.

:46:23. > :46:26.But here's an experienced camper, isn't he?

:46:27. > :46:30.John has been around for years. Not John Inverdale!

:46:31. > :46:34.Yes, he is tough. A player does not remember every match they have

:46:35. > :46:38.played, but if you have match point and then lose it stays with you for

:46:39. > :46:41.life. I bet you can remember that. Yes. Are you speaking from

:46:42. > :46:51.experience? Yes, I was playing a Frenchman, I

:46:52. > :46:55.was 6-1, 5-1 up and lost it. It is your last waking thought, you

:46:56. > :46:58.do remember. Of course, he has not beaten Andy

:46:59. > :47:02.and I don't expect him to this time. He is not the sort of player that

:47:03. > :47:06.will worry about the size of the crowd or any sense of occasion, he

:47:07. > :47:09.has been there and done that. Of course, Murray has to boot that

:47:10. > :47:15.semifinal defeat behind them because he got thumped by rough and about.

:47:16. > :47:21.-- Rafael Nadal. He did, I guess he was a little

:47:22. > :47:25.tired or just overrun by Nadal. It was not his greatest hour, but you

:47:26. > :47:29.look back and you think, that Nadal guy, he's pretty good, on clay

:47:30. > :47:34.especially. It was also a great run to the

:47:35. > :47:35.semifinals on clay for Andy, as well.

:47:36. > :47:39.A Grand Slam, especially when you are not supposed to be quite as

:47:40. > :47:42.strong on. It was only a few weeks ago we were wondering about surgery

:47:43. > :47:45.and the motivation of Andy Murray and all of these questions come up,

:47:46. > :47:50.but he is always the centre of attention because he is so good.

:47:51. > :47:54.The last couple of German tea has played that is the best clay-court

:47:55. > :47:58.tennis he has ever played. -- the last couple of tournaments. He must

:47:59. > :48:04.be thinking he is playing as good as ever and has a great shots. -- a

:48:05. > :48:07.great shot. Well, Amelie Mauresmo has arrived

:48:08. > :48:11.and they have gone to another practice, but he has also decided to

:48:12. > :48:15.get his hair cut. There he is having his hair cut. You have to look your

:48:16. > :48:20.best, he will be in the spotlight over the next few weeks, that is

:48:21. > :48:25.another box ticked. That is indeed players lounge.

:48:26. > :48:30.So he has been shaved. Yes, ready for the grasscourt season.

:48:31. > :48:35.I think he enjoys the cat and mouse with the press, the written press

:48:36. > :48:39.are wondering where he has gone, whether the BBC knows something

:48:40. > :48:42.everyone else doesn't. He is always the centre of

:48:43. > :48:46.attention. I wonder if Amelie Mauresmo is ready for all that over

:48:47. > :48:49.here. It will be quite something, because she is going to be

:48:50. > :48:53.fascinating for the next two or three weeks, as well.

:48:54. > :48:58.Yes, because Ivan Lendl refused to do anything and I wonder if that may

:48:59. > :49:00.be the best idea, to say no to everybody.

:49:01. > :49:06.His interviews were not exactly easy, you had to have ten question

:49:07. > :49:11.ready for Ivan Lendl. Privately he is funny as hell but to interview he

:49:12. > :49:13.is difficult. Our fascinating matchup on Centre

:49:14. > :49:19.Court, Grigor Dimitrov against James Ward. Grigor Dimitrov, we have been

:49:20. > :49:22.talking about him throughout the day, such an incredible talent, a

:49:23. > :49:27.wonderful ambassador for the game and could be the big future of the

:49:28. > :49:30.number one spot. It is certainly possible. He is

:49:31. > :49:35.coming along nicely, a steady progression.

:49:36. > :49:41.Obviously, perhaps the most charismatic of that generation. So,

:49:42. > :49:44.let us hope, for tennis's sake, that he does come through and challenges

:49:45. > :49:47.the top spot. He is the youngest guy in the top

:49:48. > :49:54.20. Even though he has been around for years he is the youngest man.

:49:55. > :49:59.I want James to play well today, he has been working with a guy called

:50:00. > :50:02.Darren from Australia, Darrin Tenby, and they have been working on the

:50:03. > :50:05.mindset they take out onto the court. With a bit of luck it will

:50:06. > :50:11.fortify him. Andrew Cotter is in position, all

:50:12. > :50:16.yours, Andrew. COMMENTATOR: Thank you, Grigor

:50:17. > :50:20.Dimitrov will get us under way as the cloud comes in.

:50:21. > :50:47.A big talent in the game, double fault to start.

:50:48. > :50:53.As Andrew was saying, you just want to James Ward to give a good account

:50:54. > :50:57.of himself on this stage, and he has been to the semifinal of this

:50:58. > :51:04.tournament before three years ago, but Dan Evans was rather overwhelmed

:51:05. > :51:05.by Kevin Anderson earlier... A similar disparity in the rankings

:51:06. > :52:01.here between these two. Easing himself in nicely, now,

:52:02. > :52:06.Dimitrov, after that initial double fault.

:52:07. > :52:14.And, ultimately, a good folder. -- hold.

:52:15. > :52:25.That was an impressive game, wasn't it? Dimitrov's showing that he has

:52:26. > :52:29.some pop. When the first serve as firing, he

:52:30. > :52:34.is a rough guide to fend off. Of course, the forehand is a very

:52:35. > :52:38.potent weapon. Yes, and we watched that match

:52:39. > :52:40.between Dan Evans at Kevin Anderson earlier, which on the day was a bit

:52:41. > :52:50.of a mismatch. This will be a slightly different

:52:51. > :53:03.affair to that. Two very different players.

:53:04. > :53:09.Nicely played. Of course, Dimitrov and Anderson are two entirely

:53:10. > :53:15.different styles. I think we will probably see some

:53:16. > :53:18.slightly longer points in this match than we did between Evans and

:53:19. > :53:23.Anderson. We have already seen from Dimitrov

:53:24. > :53:25.slices and angles and top-spin. There is a lot more variety than

:53:26. > :54:08.Anderson brought to the table. That backhand barely made it to the

:54:09. > :54:21.net. James Ward, equally impressive in

:54:22. > :54:53.his opening service game. The first ace of the match.

:54:54. > :54:55.That is a great serve. On that surface, when that serve as working,

:54:56. > :55:41.unreturnable. Athletic. Entertaining to watch,

:55:42. > :55:59.Dimitrov. Yes, you are not going to have a lot

:56:00. > :56:07.of joy trying to dig this guy around. He moves well.

:56:08. > :56:25.A good return brings Ward some success.

:56:26. > :56:38.A good service game for Dimitrov. Not a Goliath by modern tennis

:56:39. > :56:42.players' standards, but he has some real strength in that serve.

:56:43. > :56:48.Interestingly, when you see Dimitrov, it is almost as if talent

:56:49. > :56:53.is associated with him. He is starting to fulfil that. I

:56:54. > :56:57.suppose because he was labelled talented, it is a tag to carry

:56:58. > :57:00.around, but it was said he could be as good as Roger Federer.

:57:01. > :57:06.I am not sure that was the exact words, but he put him in that

:57:07. > :57:09.bracket and people let upon it. He won Wimbledon open juniors, so the

:57:10. > :57:14.pressure starts to bear down, but I think he has coped with it pretty

:57:15. > :57:16.well, his transition to a senior player.

:57:17. > :57:21.Absolutely, I think a lot of people then said he has as much talent as

:57:22. > :57:24.Roger Federer sobriquets he not as successful? Therefore, you obviously

:57:25. > :57:30.does not work hard enough comedy likes to party tonight and is just

:57:31. > :57:34.not dedicated. Of course, none of those comments are fair. The guy has

:57:35. > :57:41.really put in a lot of the hard yards over the last 12 months.

:57:42. > :57:45.Perhaps it has been the last year and a half that his attitude and

:57:46. > :57:53.maybe has become just a little more mature, because his fitness levels

:57:54. > :58:02.have improved immensely. It is Ward.

:58:03. > :58:24.Yes, he made it look so simple. But it takes some -- something a little

:58:25. > :58:29.special to take his foot off the pedal enough just to touch the ball

:58:30. > :58:55.over the net. A flexible young man, as well.

:58:56. > :59:05.Ward has settled quickly into this match, as well. The 3-set matches

:59:06. > :59:07.are a bit of a splint, you cannot let your opponent get to quick

:59:08. > :59:27.start. -- a bit of a sprint. That is beautifully done, wonderful

:59:28. > :00:01.points. covers the net very well. Ward seems

:00:02. > :00:10.to be landing his first serves pretty well in the early stages.

:00:11. > :00:18.That is a good hold. Plenty of pressure coming down from the

:00:19. > :00:24.talented Dimitrov there. At this stage, James Ward has done it

:00:25. > :00:27.before. He had the run to the semifinals three years ago and he

:00:28. > :00:29.beat the defending champion Sam Querrey. He will not be fazed by the

:00:30. > :00:47.challenge facing him. They do not hang about, these two. ?

:00:48. > :00:51.la macro he might be fazed by the shots coming his way though! He

:00:52. > :01:35.might be fazed. Always good to watch, Dimitrov.

:01:36. > :01:46.Sweet once again. Dimitrov just caressing the volley.

:01:47. > :01:55.It is a hold to love for the Bulgarian. A bit of a

:01:56. > :02:03.standard-bearer for Bulgarian tennis. Trying to think of Bulgarian

:02:04. > :02:08.tennis players. Certainly on the mend's side of things. When he won

:02:09. > :02:22.in Stockholm last year, that was the first time any barbarian had one the

:02:23. > :02:29.men's title -- the first time any bold -- Bulgarian had won the

:02:30. > :02:37.mend's title. He already is a big star in Bulgaria. Youngsters want to

:02:38. > :02:41.take up the game there and they need a hero to follow and Dimitrov is

:02:42. > :02:52.already that. He has made steady progress. That is the story, really.

:02:53. > :03:01.He has continued to improve and now has the scent of the very highest

:03:02. > :03:07.level of the game. Now he probably believes that becoming number one is

:03:08. > :03:12.within his grasp or that he has a chance to actually achieve that one

:03:13. > :03:18.day. It is a big hurdle to overcome because a lot of people never think

:03:19. > :03:21.that they have that opportunity. We are still on serve here in the first

:03:22. > :04:06.set. James Ward looks to be hitting the

:04:07. > :04:08.ball quite clearly so far. He has had a very confident start so far

:04:09. > :04:40.today. That is Ward's real strength. The

:04:41. > :04:49.two hander is his best shot, most confident and most secure.

:04:50. > :05:10.A very high percentage early on of first serves landing for Ward.

:05:11. > :05:30.Just did not quite get it out wide enough.

:05:31. > :05:43.That is good! It is a good hold for James Ward. Ward completely fooled

:05:44. > :05:46.Dimitrov with the amount of top-spin on that shot.

:05:47. > :05:48.Dimitrov with the amount of top-spin on that I think Dimitrov thought it

:05:49. > :06:47.was going long. At first, anyway. Good hitting again by Ward. His

:06:48. > :07:50.ground strokes were firing well. Very blustery out there. You can see

:07:51. > :07:53.the flags. It is not easy. Hunting for a tennis board under the

:07:54. > :08:13.scoreboard. Just delayed for a moment. -- a tennis ball.

:08:14. > :08:26.Explosive forehand. Ward would have liked to have done a lot more with

:08:27. > :08:28.that return of serve. Second serve. Set it up in the middle of the

:08:29. > :08:42.court. Half a chance there for James Ward

:08:43. > :08:51.but Dimitrov holds. We move on. On serve. They have played once before

:08:52. > :08:58.but Dimitrov was 23 and they met five years ago in a futures event.

:08:59. > :09:03.James Ward won that. Dimitrov was but a lad. Their first meeting at

:09:04. > :09:13.this level is now. A very precocious lad though. That is not to be

:09:14. > :09:20.entirely discounted. Both of these players love it here. We mentioned

:09:21. > :09:24.Ward's great run to the semifinals. Dimitrov is a regular here. This is

:09:25. > :09:29.his sixth appearance at the Queen's Club. They did to the semifinal a

:09:30. > :09:35.couple of years ago losing to David Nalbandian. Lost in the opening

:09:36. > :09:46.match last year to Lleyton Hewitt. No disgrace in that. It was two

:09:47. > :09:49.years ago that Dimitrov got through to the semifinals, was it? Last year

:09:50. > :09:57.he would have been nervous knowing he had so many points to defend.

:09:58. > :10:03.Clean slate this year. He can swing freely. New balls. James Ward

:10:04. > :10:22.serving. That was a mental error. New balls,

:10:23. > :11:19.you have to guard against the slice and wide -- out wide.

:11:20. > :11:30.Again, very, very impressive serving from James Ward. We are waxing

:11:31. > :11:39.lyrical about the talent and wonder of Grigor Dimitrov, but this first

:11:40. > :11:46.set is anybody's. James Ward showed as yesterday in his opening round

:11:47. > :11:53.when that he is matched tough -- he showed us yesterday in his opening

:11:54. > :12:01.round win. He knows how to compete. Dimitrov just starting to misfire a

:12:02. > :14:07.couple of loose ones. Another hold for Dimitrov. Really

:14:08. > :14:11.nicely played. Dimitrov showed us he has got a really good understanding

:14:12. > :14:16.of the court and how to take advantage of situations will stop

:14:17. > :14:24.his mishit forehand muso short -- landed so short that Ward could not

:14:25. > :14:36.do much but ship it back. Dimitrov said, the net is where I want to be.

:14:37. > :14:40.-- chip it back. Good point you made that James Ward is battle hardened.

:14:41. > :14:44.He did not play particular well in Nottingham last week, but won of

:14:45. > :14:49.course yesterday. Whereas Dimitrov has not played since disappointing

:14:50. > :14:57.first-round defeat at the French Open to Ivo Karlovic Rob volley. But

:14:58. > :15:03.he has played well on the clay this year -- Ivo Karlovic. I do not think

:15:04. > :15:09.the first-round loss in Paris will be anything more than just a blip in

:15:10. > :15:18.his year. The rest might indeed do him good. Perhaps. A very good

:15:19. > :15:30.season for Dimitrov. He won in an occult that Billy Maca -- in

:15:31. > :15:31.Acapulco. James Ward very much in this. Serving to stay in the first

:15:32. > :16:26.set. Very close. That would have been the

:16:27. > :16:33.shot of the week thus far. Look how far behind the baseline Dimitrov

:16:34. > :16:38.was. How did he generate that sort of power. Out by any much. -- an

:16:39. > :17:40.inch. How can he respond? So evenly

:17:41. > :17:45.matched throughout the set and then right at the end, the jitters. Set

:17:46. > :18:20.point. Relief from the crowd. Dimitrov

:18:21. > :18:27.throws his head back in frustration. That is not a forehand he would

:18:28. > :18:37.expect to miss too often. Perhaps the occasion got to him as well.

:18:38. > :19:17.Challenge from Grigor Dimitrov on that one. But if it is good, it is a

:19:18. > :19:26.hold of serve for James Ward. It is. Comfortably in. What they hold that

:19:27. > :19:33.is for James Ward. -- a whole. He was up against it, facing set point.

:19:34. > :20:06.He certainly was. That will boost him.

:20:07. > :20:51.Very strong service game from Grigor Dimitrov. A hold to love. Does not

:20:52. > :20:57.matter. It is who plays the big points well. James Ward as well, if

:20:58. > :21:05.you can get into the tie-break, every chance there. He has done

:21:06. > :21:14.well. Dimitrov has maybe not played his exhilarating best, but he has

:21:15. > :21:37.been solid. Ward has been with him every step of the way.

:21:38. > :21:41.He does have a loyal following, Grigor Dimitrov.

:21:42. > :22:04.UMPIRE: Time. Once more, it is up to James Ward to

:22:05. > :22:17.try and hold serve to stay in this set.

:22:18. > :22:31.Great play from Dimitrov. That was an imposing point. The drop volley

:22:32. > :22:36.from Ward was beautifully played. Graceful and athletic. The shot was

:22:37. > :23:09.perfectly placed. Thought one of the strokes from

:23:10. > :23:14.Dimitrov was long on the baseline. James Ward having a chat to the

:23:15. > :23:55.umpire. He made it look so easy. But it was

:23:56. > :24:03.anything but. That was a beautifully played point from James Ward. He is

:24:04. > :24:07.responding well, there is no doubt about that. The question was whether

:24:08. > :24:45.he would live up to the challenge. Once again, Ward trying to slide the

:24:46. > :24:51.ball out wide, not getting enough angle. Of course, if you hit it like

:24:52. > :25:02.that, you have opened up the court and you have given your opponent all

:25:03. > :25:09.of the ankles. -- angles. He is challenging, Ward. Everybody in here

:25:10. > :25:17.Sword Beach puff of white. -- everybody in here saw. Just in the

:25:18. > :25:26.hope or chi is misbehaving. Fancy that. Here is the real pressure on

:25:27. > :25:41.the Ward serve. UMPIRE: Advantage, Dimitrov. As in

:25:42. > :26:15.the last service game, set point. Overalls by the umpire. --

:26:16. > :26:19.overrules. It hangs on the decision of the umpire. It was called out by

:26:20. > :26:25.the line judge. It was a clean winner. What a shot it was as well.

:26:26. > :26:35.On the run, to win the set. There is nothing James Ward can do. Wonderful

:26:36. > :26:43.point by Dimitrov. It most certainly was. Well out of court, still

:26:44. > :26:50.managed to generate enough top-spin. Dropped it inside the baseline. His

:26:51. > :26:55.movement around the court is good. He has all of the shots. He is

:26:56. > :27:03.tremendously athletic. He hunts things down so well. What does

:27:04. > :27:07.Grigor Dimitrov do well? He does most things well. All things well.

:27:08. > :27:14.He has not got a standout weapon but he is good in all departments. Well,

:27:15. > :27:19.yes, that is fair. He is very athletic. Covers the court

:27:20. > :27:26.beautifully. Beforehand I think could develop into a Federer like

:27:27. > :27:32.forehand. It is a big shot. And the first serve again with just a little

:27:33. > :27:40.more consistency could also become a huge weapon. That was tough for

:27:41. > :27:46.Ward. He was so close to the tie-breaker, the penalty shoot out.

:27:47. > :27:51.Anything can really happen in that. He had done so well. He had played

:27:52. > :27:56.pretty solidly so far. He has done well and he continues to do well.

:27:57. > :28:05.This is a real test for him. The start of the second set. It is easy

:28:06. > :28:11.to just have a slight lapse. It is also... When you win a tight first

:28:12. > :28:16.set like that, it is easy for a guy like Dimitrov to just relax and know

:28:17. > :28:21.that he has a slight question, he can play a little more like he would

:28:22. > :28:26.in practice. The real danger is that Dimitrov just powers away. Plays the

:28:27. > :28:37.sort of tennis that we know he can play. That would be an imposing

:28:38. > :28:41.proposition for James Ward. There is nothing -- he is nothing if not

:28:42. > :28:47.psychologically strong, James Ward. He is a fighter. He will have to be

:28:48. > :28:48.now. This man is a set to the good and ready to serve to start the

:28:49. > :29:32.second. relax more and open his shoulders.

:29:33. > :30:18.It is not quite happening yet. We return to ace again. -- we return

:30:19. > :31:23.to Hawk-Eye again. It was wide. UMPIRE: Mr Dimitrov has two

:31:24. > :31:33.challenges remaining. COMMENTATOR: A bit of an opening

:31:34. > :32:30.here, perhaps, for Ward. Well, troubled for just a moment on

:32:31. > :32:48.his serve, but he sees himself through that service game.

:32:49. > :32:57.What a setting it is. I think the weather forecast is pretty good for

:32:58. > :33:25.the rest of the week, in contrast to last year, when we sat and shivered.

:33:26. > :33:37.In steps the umpire, again. Well, Cedric has been spot on and

:33:38. > :33:43.thus far. He is worried now, look at him. He

:33:44. > :33:56.is watching the big screen. You are right. He holed my wisdom.

:33:57. > :34:25.-- behold. It is a replay of the point.

:34:26. > :34:35.UMPIRE: Mr M5 back door has one challenge remaining.

:34:36. > :34:39.-- Mr Dimitrov as one challenge remaining. Ward's turning to find

:34:40. > :34:56.the lines. Great body serve, didn't give

:34:57. > :35:29.Dimitrov any chance to swing at the ball.

:35:30. > :35:31.James Ward. First service game and a very comfortable hold.

:35:32. > :36:59.That was an impressive game. That was a big serve.

:37:00. > :37:07.The speed gun on court says 136 mph. We stress again, it is a little

:37:08. > :37:15.bit generous, but still quick. And another one. And Dimitrov with

:37:16. > :37:19.hold to love. He is doing a good job of keeping

:37:20. > :37:26.the pressure on. I am just looking at Grigor

:37:27. > :37:34.Dimitrov's player box there. It is not your usual coaching team.

:37:35. > :37:45.French Open champion is in the house.

:37:46. > :37:57.What a couple. Imagine the children, the tennis genes, they would rival

:37:58. > :38:02.Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf. Maybe let us not go there yet.

:38:03. > :38:10.I am planning for the wedding, buying myself a hat.

:38:11. > :38:20.But, I see it again, a big, big talent. He is looking good so far,

:38:21. > :38:26.doing enough. Wrong serve in the second set, and

:38:27. > :38:31.James Ward still very much in this match.

:38:32. > :38:40.Just have to wait for everyone to settle down and find their seats.

:38:41. > :39:03.Very impressive how cool Ward has been in those little tight

:39:04. > :40:09.exchanges. Well, that was a surprising miss,

:40:10. > :40:16.really, because Dimitrov was in good position.

:40:17. > :40:43.Roger Rasheed, coaching Dimitrov now.

:40:44. > :40:51.Good coverage by Grigor Dimitrov. He has a gift for moving on a grass

:40:52. > :41:29.court, he really has. The way he slides around so confidently.

:41:30. > :41:37.And there it is, the break of serve in the second set.

:41:38. > :41:46.And he takes this match by the scruff of the neck.

:41:47. > :41:52.Roger Rasheed there, Grigor Dimitrov worked for a long time with another

:41:53. > :41:56.coach after going to the Academy in Paris.

:41:57. > :42:09.It is a bit chilly in the shade over there in the nice seats.

:42:10. > :42:15.He might just motor away with this one now. I hope for James Ward's

:42:16. > :42:45.sake that he does not. That is the way you want to

:42:46. > :43:13.consolidate the break. Well, there we are, Grigor Dimitrov

:43:14. > :43:17.with an emphatic hold moves closer to a place in the next round and it

:43:18. > :43:21.may be the end of the British challenge. We saw Dan Evans going to

:43:22. > :43:22.today, James Ward struggling year, Andy Murray makes his appearance

:43:23. > :43:55.tomorrow. STUDIO: He is the defending champion

:43:56. > :44:01.here and at Wimbledon. He makes his first appearance and

:44:02. > :44:04.this lady, Amelie Mauresmo, will be in his corner, making her first

:44:05. > :44:08.appearance here at the Queen's Club and her first official day working

:44:09. > :44:13.with Andy Murray. We will watch that match tomorrow

:44:14. > :44:20.against Henry Paul Matthew -- Henri Paul Matthew. -- Paul-Henri

:44:21. > :44:26.Mathieu. Coverage gets under way when play

:44:27. > :44:30.starts at 12:30pm. Stan Wawrinka, what a start he has

:44:31. > :44:36.come against Marcos Baghdatis, who won the Nottingham Challenger last

:44:37. > :44:41.week. Those games tomorrow afternoon, join

:44:42. > :44:43.for that. We will be here until 6pm on BBC

:44:44. > :44:53.Two. COMMENTATOR: Yes, as tough a defence

:44:54. > :44:54.of a title as can be for Andy Murray, a very strong line-up this

:44:55. > :45:06.year. Can James Ward find a way back into

:45:07. > :45:57.this match? First task, hold serve. That wonderful three backhand, the

:45:58. > :46:02.single-handed backhand of Dimitrov. It has got James Ward in a bit of

:46:03. > :46:08.trouble again. -- that wonderful free backhand.

:46:09. > :46:17.That will do. That is exactly what the doctor

:46:18. > :46:36.ordered, Ward needs a couple of more first service like that.

:46:37. > :46:41.Good anticipation by Dimitrov. He picked it right, just slightly

:46:42. > :47:10.mistimed the passing shot. That is wonderful, great reflexes,

:47:11. > :47:14.improvisation... Hard to take for Ward, but grand

:47:15. > :47:17.stuff from Dimitrov. We saw couple of times yesterday

:47:18. > :47:22.when James Ward went crosscourt in situations like that, the obvious

:47:23. > :47:51.choice, and Dimitrov picks it. Still in there.

:47:52. > :48:54.And the crowd appreciate that one. James Ward still trying to just

:48:55. > :49:16.picked himself up. A cry of, on. -- a cry of

:49:17. > :49:34.Again, just a suggestion of a chance for Ward.

:49:35. > :49:43.While! Wild on the second serve. And James Ward may have a couple of

:49:44. > :49:49.chances. Yes, hardly an impressive game here

:49:50. > :50:08.from Dimitrov. It is how the players play the

:50:09. > :50:16.points when their backs are against the wall. That is what makes the

:50:17. > :50:42.great players. Still a break point to face.

:50:43. > :50:52.Wonderful stuff! James Ward has the break back, and how he had to work

:50:53. > :50:56.for it. The defence of Dimitrov was superb,

:50:57. > :51:03.but eventually yields, and James Ward is back in there fighting.

:51:04. > :51:10.Well, that last point, a great illustration of why Grigor Dimitrov

:51:11. > :51:14.is such a fascinating guide to watch, so athletic, he can do so

:51:15. > :51:21.many things on the court, and yet James Ward managed to stay with him,

:51:22. > :51:29.and in fact outsmarted him. Huge point.

:51:30. > :51:36.Dimitrov failed to stay upright at least a couple of times in that

:51:37. > :51:46.rally. Ward had plenty of chances to lose

:51:47. > :51:54.his nerve. Dimitrov, of course, made things very awkward.

:51:55. > :52:17.In the end, Ward with full credit. This is the game, though, to

:52:18. > :52:29.consolidate that break back, Ward serving, 3-4.

:52:30. > :52:33.Sometimes you worked so hard for a break, come into the next game and

:52:34. > :52:46.you are not quite with it. Well, he is serving against the wind

:52:47. > :52:51.here at this end, so it is not going to be easy.

:52:52. > :52:56.Or it wouldn't be easy in any circumstances, especially not with

:52:57. > :53:04.the pressure on him as it is now. He works out, Roger Rasheed, doesn't

:53:05. > :53:42.he? And the loose one, straight onto the

:53:43. > :53:46.back foot again. Right up against it, three break points, and the

:53:47. > :53:47.crowd will try and lift him, but this will be mighty tough for James

:53:48. > :54:27.Ward. Again, another one bites the dust.

:54:28. > :54:46.Ward is doing everything he has to do here.

:54:47. > :55:00.Just one more to go, and he is taken by Dimitrov. He breaks back and he

:55:01. > :55:05.will serve for the match. It was Dimitrov's athleticism there,

:55:06. > :55:10.really, that put the pressure on Ward. He hit a perfect drop volley.

:55:11. > :55:47.Not up to the task. So, for a place in the next round.

:55:48. > :56:03.It is interesting how the court seems to get more slippery as it

:56:04. > :57:00.gets drier. It didn't ever used to be like that.

:57:01. > :57:17.It is remarkable how accurate guys like Dimitrov with that squash shot

:57:18. > :57:55.now. He hits it so confidently. On the brink, two match points.

:57:56. > :58:07.Finished with an ace, with a flourish, from one of the brightest

:58:08. > :58:11.talents in the game. He knocks out a James Ward, who was

:58:12. > :58:15.gallant, but just not quite good enough to beat this man, who will be

:58:16. > :58:21.tough to beat. Yes, a good performance from James

:58:22. > :58:23.Ward. Dimitrov, a real threat to win this title.

:58:24. > :58:28.James Ward is out, Dimitrov through in straight sets.

:58:29. > :58:34.STUDIO: The number four seed, Grigor Dimitrov, ranked 13 in the WorldCom

:58:35. > :58:42.is safely through, a semifinalist -- semifinalist here to year ago.

:58:43. > :58:46.This is the result so far on Centre Court, Feliciano Lopez, that match

:58:47. > :58:48.held over from last night, he is through.

:58:49. > :58:52.Kevin Anderson overpowered Dan Evans, the weld card of Great

:58:53. > :58:57.Britain. Mowing, toss if it's pulled off as a surprise bidding at Marin

:58:58. > :58:59.Cilic, and as you see Grigor Dimitrov is through. We are coming

:59:00. > :59:03.to the end of the coverage on BBC Two but there is still another match

:59:04. > :59:07.to come, James Duckworth against Tomas Berdych, and if you want to

:59:08. > :59:11.watch that it is on the BBC Red Button.

:59:12. > :59:14.David Goffin is through, Marcos Baghdatis plays Stan Wawrinka

:59:15. > :59:21.tomorrow, and Sam Querrey, another former champion, is through also.

:59:22. > :59:24.On the red button it starts at 12:30pm, but we will be year on BBC

:59:25. > :59:30.Two at 1pm. The big guns come out to -- on

:59:31. > :59:32.Centre Court tomorrow, Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka and Jo-Wilfried
