:13:29. > :13:54.his coach. -- Craig Boynton. Again, Steve Johnson just working
:13:55. > :14:26.the slice. Those two so often. Beautiful. He proves too good
:14:27. > :14:31.against Johnson. This deal of Cilic. A lot of bite on that slice and it
:14:32. > :14:36.stays low. Cilic did well to get the racket underneath the ball. That
:14:37. > :15:17.whips right across his shoulder there.
:15:18. > :15:31.That is a good server, the wide forehand but it must be wider than
:15:32. > :15:48.that. That is more likely Cilic we know.
:15:49. > :16:04.5-2 now. He did think after losing the first
:16:05. > :16:11.set in the tie-break that he might come roaring back, and so it has
:16:12. > :16:19.proved. Marin Cilic, world number of the Cuban -- 13. Used to work with
:16:20. > :16:25.Bob Brett, a great course before super coaches came along and took
:16:26. > :16:33.all of the plum jobs. Bob Brett had coached Ivanisevic. A great talents
:16:34. > :16:42.to work with. I think he also worked with a Young John Morley. Yes, he
:16:43. > :16:47.upgraded after that. Again, I US Open winner from a few years ago.
:16:48. > :16:54.Quarterfinalist at Wimbledon in the last two years.
:16:55. > :16:58.The time of year that he loves heading to grass and beyond that
:16:59. > :17:04.come to the US Open. As we have mentioned, very fond of
:17:05. > :17:18.this tournament as well. So, to Steve Johnson, trying to
:17:19. > :18:16.remain in this second set. He did not do enough on the return
:18:17. > :18:19.but at least he is figuring out the body serve and make that return
:18:20. > :18:30.back, nice, solid volley from Steve Johnson. Pretty comfortable. Little
:18:31. > :18:39.mutterings of appreciation again from Steve Johnson, the return of
:18:40. > :18:40.Cilic. Has certainly got better than in the first set. Cilic was really
:18:41. > :18:46.struggling then. Johnson moves along, it was just
:18:47. > :19:04.that one blip earlier in the set. Cilic now with a chance to level
:19:05. > :19:46.things up. This is the first of the quarterfinals.
:19:47. > :19:59.That has got going. I can't believe it. -- to go in. Steve Johnson
:20:00. > :20:26.nearly off court. That must be the highest lob.
:20:27. > :20:32.The forehand has been good in this set. Let him down in the
:20:33. > :20:48.tie-breaker, which he ultimately lost. But spot on.
:20:49. > :21:00.He takes it as moves briskly and impressively through the second set,
:21:01. > :21:04.Marin Cilic, and level things up. I say level things up, but this, all
:21:05. > :21:12.the momentum is now with Marin Cilic, a far stronger player. We
:21:13. > :21:16.know how things can change, because Steve Johnson looked strong after
:21:17. > :21:20.the first set and off he went for a bathroom break, Cilic gave himself
:21:21. > :21:24.talking to and it was so different. He looks conservative in the first
:21:25. > :21:30.set, Cilic, like he wasn't confident of himself, he wasn't returning
:21:31. > :21:34.well, Mr couple of forehands in the tie-breaker and was not quite there.
:21:35. > :21:38.Did not play badly, but had not raised his game like you would
:21:39. > :21:44.expect a player of his class to do, but when the match got close since
:21:45. > :21:50.that second set started he has gone up a level come as sharper and more
:21:51. > :21:53.aggressive. Seeing the ball earlier and has been much more impressive.
:21:54. > :22:00.Let's look at Cilic and where he has put his serves. The yellow balls are
:22:01. > :22:06.the first serve, the blue second serve. He gets plenty of all width
:22:07. > :22:12.on it. A few in the middle as well. It is a good variation and he is at
:22:13. > :22:17.one out to the backhand side that we see, he uses the power serve that
:22:18. > :22:22.time and the amazing kick that he has where he jumps up it up so high,
:22:23. > :22:26.not as high on the grass as other services but on the hard courts when
:22:27. > :22:29.he won the US Open that is a particularly effective serve because
:22:30. > :22:32.it is not easy to get on top of the ball and directed back into court
:22:33. > :22:37.without giving yourself too much space to cover on the next shot. He
:22:38. > :22:42.uses that very well. It is not always about pace, it is placement.
:22:43. > :22:46.It is not a monster servers, it is big enough but from a guy his size
:22:47. > :22:53.you might think he has a sizzler that gets over 130. It is a
:22:54. > :22:56.placement serve but very good. The second serve is extremely good, and
:22:57. > :23:00.again, you don't always measure serves on the peas of the first
:23:01. > :23:09.serve, it is the combination of the first and second and in that regard
:23:10. > :23:16.he is one of the best stock -- of the best. Johnson just checking the
:23:17. > :24:03.sun, starting his third set. That might have taken out will Young.
:24:04. > :24:13.A lot of passions in this match when Johnson's serve gets returned it
:24:14. > :24:17.comes down to Cilic hitting the forehand and Johnson trying to work
:24:18. > :24:26.that slice and defend and occasionally attack and come in
:24:27. > :24:32.behind it. Trying to avoid what feels him at the start of the second
:24:33. > :24:43.set, Steve Johnson. He has broken early on.
:24:44. > :24:57.Good ball. That is class. To be able to feel that drop shot off forehand
:24:58. > :25:06.with that much pace. That is fantastic, one of the best we will
:25:07. > :25:16.see in this entire week. It is a nice way to hold serve. What a shock
:25:17. > :25:25.that was. Just for a moment in that service you feared for him.
:25:26. > :25:31.Responded very well. But this shot here, most players would have been
:25:32. > :25:35.happy to have hit that back into court, but he could see it early
:25:36. > :25:38.enough and somehow had the confidence to feel the ball for a
:25:39. > :25:42.drop shot and take the pace of a ball that was coming at him with an
:25:43. > :25:50.immense pace and drop it just over the net. It was fantastic. Not the
:25:51. > :26:05.sort of shot you work on in practice either.
:26:06. > :26:23.I challenge, I think, from Steve Johnson.
:26:24. > :26:33.Rights to challenge. That is wide. We are all having a good time. It
:26:34. > :26:41.just touched the line. That is too he has got wrong.
:26:42. > :26:52.It is all happening now. Another one coming in.
:26:53. > :27:25.He is not giving his opinion on this one. Call stands.
:27:26. > :27:34.He did that purposely, brought Cilic in with the short backhand.
:27:35. > :27:40.He made that dramatic. We know this is a big point, the umpire just
:27:41. > :28:17.confirmed that. Mr Cilic has two challenges
:28:18. > :28:22.remaining. This is more likely Steve Johnson we saw in the first set,
:28:23. > :28:26.very impressive and Marin Cilic is letting himself slip away for a
:28:27. > :28:45.moment. Three break points for the American.
:28:46. > :29:07.Chased this one down so hard. Almost away.
:29:08. > :29:23.One of the three remains for Johnson.
:29:24. > :30:14.Deuce. So aggressive on these break points, Cilic.
:30:15. > :30:27.What an answer that is from Marin Cilic, 0- 40 in the deciding set.
:30:28. > :30:32.Reels off the next five points. Yes, that was nothing to do with Steve
:30:33. > :30:36.Johnson, he couldn't do anything about that, it was pinpoint service
:30:37. > :32:09.accuracy. Five superb points from Cilic.
:32:10. > :32:19.That is great play. Great service game from Steve Johnson, keeps his
:32:20. > :32:25.nose just in front in this deciding set. All to play for.
:32:26. > :32:34.I did think once Cilic had worked so hard to hold his own serve, he might
:32:35. > :32:40.be have a real go at Johnson's serve. But Johnson just not giving
:32:41. > :32:45.him a chance. No, he started off this set really well, Johnson. Got
:32:46. > :32:50.batted around a bit towards the end of the second set, but came out here
:32:51. > :32:56.and re-established himself. Add that 0- 40 chance, and Cilic reeled off
:32:57. > :33:01.five quick points. But one set, anything could happen on a grass
:33:02. > :33:06.court now. Johnson looks pretty confident. Looking to go further
:33:07. > :33:12.than he has before in an ATP Tour event. In terms of the majors, Steve
:33:13. > :33:16.Johnson's breakthrough within 2012 at the US Open when you reached the
:33:17. > :33:20.third round. He lost to Richard Gasquet. He has also been to the
:33:21. > :33:27.third round at the Australian Open three times. But that is just about
:33:28. > :33:32.his level. But you can see he could move beyond that. I think the big
:33:33. > :33:36.result was his first round here, where he beat Richard Gasquet. That
:33:37. > :33:43.is the first top ten player he has beaten in his career.
:33:44. > :33:47.Psychologically that would be a nice one to remove, having had it weighed
:33:48. > :33:50.on his mind. Now he will believe he can go up against the top guys and
:33:51. > :33:57.go through. That meant a big difference to him. Just like him to
:33:58. > :34:00.come over his backhand a bit more. A good slice, but it puts you in a
:34:01. > :34:09.defensive position a bit too many times.
:34:10. > :35:06.Too far away from the ball, that one, got down so low.
:35:07. > :35:18.Once again the number five seed is going to have to find something.
:35:19. > :35:40.Staring down some rate points and now 0- 30. -- break points.
:35:41. > :36:09.Too accurate and powerful from the Croatian.
:36:10. > :36:46.And again, success in that corner for Cilic.
:36:47. > :37:17.Again, he has had some scares in this serve. 0- 40 down in his
:37:18. > :37:23.previous service game and 0- 30 down in this one. I did say Steve Johnson
:37:24. > :37:29.was looking to reach his first semifinal. He did reach the
:37:30. > :37:33.semifinal in Valencia, where he lost to Roberto Bautista Agut. This his
:37:34. > :37:35.first appearance at Queen's and enjoying the experience. 2-1, the
:37:36. > :37:51.decider. Pinpoint accuracy. Big forehand. Hit
:37:52. > :37:58.that one, looks like it was going to go wide, but a lot of width, 90
:37:59. > :38:38.miles an hour. You could see the extreme spin.
:38:39. > :38:53.Again, has to be so accurate to work the drop shot against Johnson, but
:38:54. > :38:57.it wasn't there. He's so quick. If it had been on a hard court and it
:38:58. > :39:03.had bounced up a little higher, would have got it. He made it, but
:39:04. > :39:19.it was too low. A good effort to even get his racket to the ball.
:39:20. > :39:52.Just wide, and again Johnson holds fairly comfortably. Still worrying
:39:53. > :39:59.times for the number five seed. Marin Cilic on serve in this
:40:00. > :40:02.deciding set. SUE BARKER: The crowd enjoying the quality of tennis on
:40:03. > :40:07.display in this quarter final and no doubt looking forward to the next
:40:08. > :40:11.quarterfinal as well, as Andy Murray takes on Kyle Edmund. Andy and Kyle
:40:12. > :40:16.were both out practising today. Andrew Castle is with me. He has the
:40:17. > :40:20.practice in and has been looking good in both his opening matches,
:40:21. > :40:25.hasn't he? He looks like he's doing just enough to get through. This has
:40:26. > :40:31.been the big story this week. I have really felt Andy has been playing
:40:32. > :40:36.knowing Ivan Lendl is over there. Kyle, probably not the biggest match
:40:37. > :40:41.of his career, but his biggest one. The Davis Cup final debut last year
:40:42. > :40:45.was enormous, but another good step for him today. It doesn't matter it
:40:46. > :40:49.was a walkover last time, this time nothing to lose against Andy Murray
:40:50. > :40:53.and he will go for it. When I say nothing to lose, it doesn't mean he
:40:54. > :40:57.won't care, but go ahead and throw the firepower. Practising his serve,
:40:58. > :41:03.that will be key, winning his service games? If he doesn't get
:41:04. > :41:06.points on his serve, he has no chance of winning. He only has two
:41:07. > :41:11.or 3% chance of winning anyway. But it will be good to watch his
:41:12. > :41:14.progress. Good forehand and backhand as well. We saw some rather dark
:41:15. > :41:20.clouds, I am pleased to say they have gone past. Let's go back and
:41:21. > :41:24.continue to enjoy this first quarterfinal. COMMENTATOR: The sun
:41:25. > :41:33.is shining down. On this famous old court. It has seen some champions,
:41:34. > :41:40.and again, four-time winners, a few of them are around, Boris Becker,
:41:41. > :43:00.Lleyton Hewitt. Marin Cilic has won it once. Still in a bit of trouble.
:43:01. > :43:28.Frustration, he knew he was well in that rally.
:43:29. > :43:38.It was a great get, the first one, but just lost his connection on the
:43:39. > :43:43.way back in. Don't you love it when players fling themselves? Not giving
:43:44. > :44:38.this one up. A full-length dive there.
:44:39. > :44:48.An easier service game for Marin Cilic.
:44:49. > :44:57.Getting towards the business end of the set and match. This is where you
:44:58. > :45:11.expected Cilic to have the ability to up his game a little bit.
:45:12. > :45:59.Wide from Cilic. A lovely touch again from Steve Johnson. It really
:46:00. > :46:02.is, another gorgeous shot. The last one, when a forehand came at him he
:46:03. > :46:09.hit a forehand drop shot and this time a backhand drop shot. And sure
:46:10. > :46:14.enough, it was successful. A superb game he is playing here.
:46:15. > :46:25.Again, that variation with the Serbs. -- serves.
:46:26. > :46:31.At that stage, the business end of things, this is when the tension
:46:32. > :46:40.does creep in, but no sign of it from Johnson. He handcuffed Cilic
:46:41. > :46:45.with the serves, so accurate, didn't give Cilic a chance to get into the
:46:46. > :46:49.game. A very good service game. He looks so confident. I think that win
:46:50. > :46:57.against Richard Gasquet in the first round, we go back to his college
:46:58. > :47:01.career, which was in which he was the champion for two years, he had
:47:02. > :47:04.an astounding record of winning 72 matches in a row. That is pretty
:47:05. > :47:12.remarkable, there are some pretty good players at college level. They
:47:13. > :47:18.play a no ad system as well, which makes it risky. Matches day after
:47:19. > :47:22.day, to win 72 matches in a row and win two titles in a row, that is
:47:23. > :47:27.pretty special. A good match player under pressure. And again, off the
:47:28. > :47:31.two, perhaps look slightly more comfortable at the moment. We did
:47:32. > :47:34.think when we saw that second set and Cilic moving through it so well,
:47:35. > :47:41.maybe Johnson's days were numbered, but again the ebb and flow of the
:47:42. > :47:46.tennis match, the force was with Johnson in the first set and seems
:47:47. > :47:52.to be with him again. Still with serve, but Cilic always chasing
:47:53. > :47:55.things slightly, serving second in this Teesside inset. Seats are
:47:56. > :48:01.filling up in the sunshine here. Andy Murray against Kyle Edmund to
:48:02. > :48:40.come. They will play the winner of this match.
:48:41. > :48:46.Again, the noise of appreciation from Steve Johnson.
:48:47. > :49:29.That would have been outrageous, if he'd made that shot.
:49:30. > :49:37.Again, solid from Cilic. Pick a winner. Match now on a knife edge,
:49:38. > :49:51.as we get to 4-4 in the decider. Not easy serving from this end, with
:49:52. > :50:32.the sun. Late, late call and Cilic
:50:33. > :50:40.immediately challenged. The ball is called out.
:50:41. > :50:45.No umpire enjoys it as much as he does.
:50:46. > :51:10.It was a good call eventually, though. The call stands.
:51:11. > :51:18.Touch of the net from Steve Johnson. Rarely seen. The umpire steps in.
:51:19. > :51:50.Wow, what time this to happen. Any part of the body... Mr Cilic has
:51:51. > :51:52.one challenge remaining. We couldn't really see from here. The umpire
:51:53. > :52:20.saying it was his foot. Maybe just moved on as we lose the
:52:21. > :52:21.shot. We have to trust the umpire, very good umpire. Big moments, break
:52:22. > :52:51.points. What an effort, but it's wide and
:52:52. > :52:59.Johnson is broken. What a game. Cilic moving through to the
:53:00. > :53:04.semifinals an Steve Johnson and on. So had to put something like that
:53:05. > :53:08.behind you. Very difficult. Interesting of the talks to the
:53:09. > :53:14.umpire or not, because he is a very fair player, Steve Johnson. His
:53:15. > :53:19.reputation is impeccable. Let's see... He doesn't seem to be. You
:53:20. > :53:23.know if you've done it, obviously you will feel it as a player. I
:53:24. > :53:28.don't think he's too annoyed about it. Probably annoyed more at himself
:53:29. > :53:34.than anything. If he for sure new in his mind he hadn't touched it with
:53:35. > :53:41.his feet he would be up at the net disputing it. As you said, a very
:53:42. > :53:46.fair player, Johnson. A few players would be haranguing the umpire. He
:53:47. > :53:52.is going to have to try and break Cilic now. It definitely affected
:53:53. > :53:56.him on the next point, his mind was rattled. It is a pity, because he
:53:57. > :54:00.has played a heck of a match here and it will be sad if it comes down
:54:01. > :54:05.to that point, which it may well do in the end, because that was a big
:54:06. > :54:10.point. If his foot did slide, it must have slipped that the last
:54:11. > :54:14.fraction and hit the net. Very unlucky. This would be enormous the
:54:15. > :54:19.Steve Johnson to get into the semifinal. Marin Cilic has been many
:54:20. > :54:23.times before and won the US Open. I think it matters slightly more to
:54:24. > :54:28.Steve Johnson band Cilic, but Cilic did enough to be there himself. And
:54:29. > :54:37.now he is serving for a place in the semifinals.
:54:38. > :54:49.Mr Johnson is challenging the call, the ball is called in. A look at
:54:50. > :54:51.this call, one born of frustration, not entirely backed up by belief. On
:54:52. > :55:28.the line. The call stands. And suddenly the world is against
:55:29. > :55:53.you. Mr Johnson has two challenges remaining.
:55:54. > :56:30.Just came out of that forehand there.
:56:31. > :56:39.So, Marin Cilic, champion in 2012, with two match points.
:56:40. > :56:46.Takes it at the very first attempt, and the number five seed moves
:56:47. > :56:52.through, after a good few problems against Steve Johnson. Who couldn't
:56:53. > :56:55.repeat his efforts after seeing the number four seed, Richard Gasquet,
:56:56. > :57:01.couldn't do it against the number five. Cilic goes through. A hard
:57:02. > :57:08.earned victory indeed for the Croatian.
:57:09. > :57:16.What a way for it to end the Steve Johnson. Not saying he would have
:57:17. > :57:22.won that game in any case, but the little touch on the net possibly a
:57:23. > :57:27.turning point. After those good wins, he was undone by Marin Cilic
:57:28. > :57:31.today. It is Cilic who will go through to play the winner of their
:57:32. > :57:36.next match on Court, which everyone is excited about. Andy Murray
:57:37. > :57:45.against Kyle Edmund. Steve Johnson moves on. With thoughts of what
:57:46. > :58:02.might have been... And Cilic mentioned he won in 2012 against now
:58:03. > :58:09.banding -- Nalbandian. Kyle Edmund with other plans. This is the
:58:10. > :58:26.winning moment for Marin Cilic. Cries of celebration. Marin Cilic is
:58:27. > :58:30.safely through to the semifinals, the first man through to the last
:58:31. > :58:35.four after that 3-set victory over Steve Johnson. Let's get the
:58:36. > :58:40.thoughts of Cilic, talking to John. Many congratulations, a tough old
:58:41. > :58:44.contacts? Very tough, I think Steve was playing pretty good today and
:58:45. > :58:50.serving well. Unfortunately I played a little bit bad in that first set
:58:51. > :58:55.tie-break. I had to dig out this match from the second and third set.
:58:56. > :59:01.It wasn't easy. The first game in the third set 0- 40 down and in the
:59:02. > :59:03.second zero to 30 down. But generally I am happy with the way
:59:04. > :59:08.I'm playing and hopefully I can continue. Have you ever played a
:59:09. > :59:12.match where perhaps the key turning point, right towards the end of the
:59:13. > :59:19.game, was a decision by an umpire about a player touching the net?
:59:20. > :59:24.Well, I haven't. I had a few times in my career where I was touching
:59:25. > :59:28.the net and it wasn't good. Obviously it can turn around the
:59:29. > :59:33.condition of the court. But sometimes it can happen, its grass,
:59:34. > :59:38.and you can't really stop close to the net. I think it was a pretty
:59:39. > :59:41.good match today. You won here four years ago, got the final beer after.
:59:42. > :59:46.It must be one of your favourite events on the circuit? Absolutely, I
:59:47. > :59:50.really enjoy to play here. Grass suits my game and when I am in good
:59:51. > :59:56.form I cannot wait play really well. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's
:59:57. > :00:00.match. I will play either Andy or Kyle, so it will probably be a bit
:00:01. > :00:04.of a crowd against me, but I'm going to enjoy that. I always enjoy the
:00:05. > :00:08.atmosphere here and thanks to everyone for their support. Good
:00:09. > :00:12.luck tomorrow, a bit, on behalf of the crowd. Marin Cilic, through to
:00:13. > :00:16.another semifinal here at Queen's Club. If I could ask you all to stay
:00:17. > :00:20.in your seats pleased, because we are going to have a presentation in
:00:21. > :00:24.a few moments with four of the greatest champions ever to play here
:00:25. > :01:49.at Queen's and four of the absolute giants in the history of tennis.
:01:50. > :02:13.So, for the fourth time, McEnroe holds up the cup.
:02:14. > :02:18.As I'm sure you're aware, Andy Murray is trying to win the Queens
:02:19. > :02:20.this year for the fifth time but a lot of great players have won it
:02:21. > :02:26.four times and we will have a special presentation to four of the
:02:27. > :02:29.legends of Queen's Club. In no particular order, but because I'm
:02:30. > :02:39.looking at him just now, please welcome the one and only Mr Boris
:02:40. > :02:48.Becker. And then in order of seniority, John McEnroe. And another
:02:49. > :02:57.special presentation to him last year, Lleyton Hewitt. And for some
:02:58. > :03:00.of you who are steeped in the history of tennis from the era when
:03:01. > :03:07.Australia really did rule the tennis world, Roy Emerson.
:03:08. > :03:13.If I can have a quick word with all of you, Boris, this was the
:03:14. > :03:16.tournament that launched you in the tennis world because three weeks
:03:17. > :03:21.after winning here he won Wimbledon for the first time. It was my very
:03:22. > :03:26.first tennis tournament I have one and obviously I went on to win
:03:27. > :03:30.another two or three. It is a place I'll remember for the rest of my
:03:31. > :03:36.life because of the winning are members like an here and it is a
:03:37. > :03:38.wonderful place. When you look at pictures of you as a 17-year-old
:03:39. > :03:45.does it feel like it to someone else? It was. I was going to say it
:03:46. > :03:51.is my younger brother. But I don't have one. Eventually I have to admit
:03:52. > :03:56.it was me. What is your favourite memory of playing here? One match
:03:57. > :04:01.that sticks in your mind? My first professional tournament was at
:04:02. > :04:07.Queens and I played a guy, I lost in the finals to Tony Roach. I thought
:04:08. > :04:13.to myself, I want to somehow, somewhere, learn how to volley like
:04:14. > :04:20.this guy. So I think I got somewhere near his level and the only other
:04:21. > :04:23.thing I want to say now is why didn't they have a challenge system
:04:24. > :04:30.when I played? I would have been proven right. What is interesting
:04:31. > :04:36.now is your coaching Brimelow is Routledge and you're sitting there
:04:37. > :04:40.in the box -- meals round which. You're now in line with the service
:04:41. > :04:47.line and realise what a hard job it is. I realised it then, I did have a
:04:48. > :04:52.strange way of showing it. Lleyton, your youngster in comparison to
:04:53. > :04:57.these guys. You're full -- year for titles, is the one that sticks out?
:04:58. > :05:01.Public my first final at the time. Makes Aburas was one of the best
:05:02. > :05:06.grass court players and a guy I idolised and looked up to. To be out
:05:07. > :05:11.here on these grass court bundled up the trophy after beating him the
:05:12. > :05:16.finals was special. Given the value of your generation, when you have
:05:17. > :05:20.this man on your right from the era of Newcombe and Road, what is he
:05:21. > :05:25.need to tennis in Australia? All of those guys mean so much. They fought
:05:26. > :05:29.so hard to give us the great opportunity to be professionals and
:05:30. > :05:33.set up the ATP Tour and we all these guys so much. It is a great honour
:05:34. > :05:38.standing alongside not just ride with these other two champions here
:05:39. > :05:49.today. Roy, you are the wily one who won this title four years a row. It
:05:50. > :06:00.is incredible. What was Queen's Club like in the early 60s? I played here
:06:01. > :06:07.in 54. He were winning it in the 60s though. Well, nine years later. I
:06:08. > :06:15.love Queens because we did not have any practice courts out of Wimbledon
:06:16. > :06:20.at that time. Our warm up was here and I played indoors a lot here
:06:21. > :06:26.because when it rained and moved indoors and trained indoors. It used
:06:27. > :06:33.to render as well? Yes. I have fond memories of Queens. Tell us, these
:06:34. > :06:38.cute stands that were used to, what was the attendance like in those
:06:39. > :06:46.days? Nothing like this. This is magnificent. But we still had a lot
:06:47. > :06:53.of fun back in those years. As I said, I would not have won Wimbledon
:06:54. > :07:04.without the end all courts here, which I trained on. -- indoor. I had
:07:05. > :07:13.the good fortune of winning, I think I lost a Labour lav in 62. Not a bad
:07:14. > :07:22.man to lose two. He was a bit of a pain to play against. It is just a
:07:23. > :07:26.great place. Fantastic to have you here and Lleyton and John and Boris
:07:27. > :07:29.and the reason we are doing this is I had a quick word with Stephen
:07:30. > :07:34.Farrell and you will make some special presentations to these guys.
:07:35. > :07:37.Tell us about these. Last year Andy Murray joined the ranks of the
:07:38. > :07:41.legendary players we have an court today and a couple of others in
:07:42. > :07:46.winning this title for a times and this year we wanted to celebrate our
:07:47. > :07:50.814 champions Castle around the site you can see pictures of the fall
:07:51. > :07:54.great players we would have with us on court and Anthony Wilding and
:07:55. > :07:58.Major Ritchie and Andy, so we invited Roy to be a special guest of
:07:59. > :08:03.the tournament this year and we were delighted when John and Boris and
:08:04. > :08:09.Leighton could also join us today. This is a tournament with fantastic
:08:10. > :08:12.champions and we are proud to have this presentation. Jim has been the
:08:13. > :08:17.tournament referee here for a 30 minute and agree the groundsman I
:08:18. > :08:23.going to present trophies. Lleyton obviously has won but we have three
:08:24. > :08:29.here. David Law, Leighton will present this to Roy Emerson. He read
:08:30. > :08:37.-- here we are, two giants of Antipodean tennis. Roy Emerson,
:08:38. > :08:51.fantastic. And Jim, would you like to give that to John.
:08:52. > :09:08.And Graham, to Boris, if you would. So, ladies and gentlemen, for
:09:09. > :09:11.legends, genuine legends of tennis, Lleyton Hewitt, Roy Emerson, John
:09:12. > :09:23.McEnroe and Boris Becker. Wonderful scenes on Centre Court and
:09:24. > :09:28.wonderful to recognise the legends on court who have entertained the
:09:29. > :09:32.crowds over the years. And all smiles on Centre Court. Four of the
:09:33. > :09:34.game's greatest. They have won this title four times but next on court
:09:35. > :10:15.is a man who is aiming for five. And he's playing well. Andy Murray
:10:16. > :10:18.will be facing fellow Brit Kyle Edmund in our next quarterfinal.
:10:19. > :10:25.John Lloyd is with me in the studio. That was so much fun. Rate senses of
:10:26. > :10:29.humour. They are all great, Roy Emerson told me some stories about
:10:30. > :10:32.Queens come played on the wood and he was the fittest in his
:10:33. > :10:38.generation. The equivalent of Dokovic or Nadal. He would come out
:10:39. > :10:41.of the wood and play for two hours and do Juan want and in the
:10:42. > :10:45.afternoon he would play five sets of singles every day for a week and
:10:46. > :10:48.would tire out all the practice partners. They were treated them in
:10:49. > :10:52.because he would exhaust them because he was so fit. He always
:10:53. > :10:56.believed that you have to play a fifth set better than your first
:10:57. > :11:00.set. That was his motto. Such a great era for Australian tennis. And
:11:01. > :11:07.also listening to Boris, you forget he was only 17 when he came here,
:11:08. > :11:10.unseeded at Wimbledon. It was an incredible storage. I don't think
:11:11. > :11:16.that will happen again. Never. After he won it I remember, people said,
:11:17. > :11:19.can you win Wimbledon? I don't know what the odds were but it was
:11:20. > :11:25.ridiculous and he went and won Wimbledon. I had practised with him
:11:26. > :11:29.about a month previously on clay and I was practising with him and Bob
:11:30. > :11:35.Brett and we looked at him and thought, he's a good player but at
:11:36. > :11:39.the -- a bitter role. 60s led to his old and the trophies here at
:11:40. > :11:43.Wimbledon. OK, we know that we are clocking about. As for back at
:11:44. > :11:48.Wimbledon, handmade times does he mention the challenge system? He
:11:49. > :11:54.loves it! It would have been funny if he had been here. Would it have
:11:55. > :12:01.been the same McEnroe? In some way, yes. He would have questioned the
:12:02. > :12:06.Hawk-Eye. Exactly! We have Andy Murray coming up next and four
:12:07. > :12:10.titles he has one, incredible achievement, and going for five. We
:12:11. > :12:13.have had Soomin Lee great players playing here come as bees and is
:12:14. > :12:19.amazing players along the journey as he mixes well to court behind Kyle
:12:20. > :12:22.Edmund, it is an incredible record. He just keeps on these records are
:12:23. > :12:31.astounding, these Grand Slam records. Ten finals and two wins in
:12:32. > :12:35.slams in an era where we have seen some ridiculous players at this top
:12:36. > :12:38.level to compete with them. Coming into Queens if he has a chance of
:12:39. > :12:41.winning five with the standards drop has had in the last few years when
:12:42. > :12:48.he has played and company French Open on the grass, it is
:12:49. > :12:52.magnificent. All these players, every player you speak to loves
:12:53. > :12:56.records, they love beating records and holding records and Andy Murray
:12:57. > :13:00.wants to win this tournament but don't go onto five, that will mean a
:13:01. > :13:04.lot to him. It is interesting, in tennis people think about world
:13:05. > :13:08.rankings but to players, the rankings don't mean it, it is about
:13:09. > :13:14.titles. The play. Obviously Andy would like to be number one in the
:13:15. > :13:20.world at some stage, which surely it will be. It is all about titles,
:13:21. > :13:25.winning tournaments and slams, that is what you are for and they fight
:13:26. > :13:28.for a new work hard for. As far as Kyle Edmund goes, he's speaking
:13:29. > :13:33.yesterday about how much he has looked up to Andy and admired him
:13:34. > :13:39.and has gone and trained with him. It is always difficult when you play
:13:40. > :13:42.one of your heroes. I don't knew if you will remember who you please
:13:43. > :13:46.come to intimidating to see them at the other end. It is right, the good
:13:47. > :13:49.thing is he has practised with him so many times and been a key member
:13:50. > :13:53.of the Davis Cup, so that will certainly help. He will have got
:13:54. > :14:02.used to that, which is something great. It is a great match for Kyle.
:14:03. > :14:06.What a chance to go up against the man, Andy Murray. And all of these
:14:07. > :14:10.practice sessions they've had and gone play against him to see where
:14:11. > :14:14.he is that in his level, when you play like Kyle Edmonds, hang around
:14:15. > :14:17.the top players. Not just on the cord come off the court, learn what
:14:18. > :14:22.they say and do and how they go about their game. You can only get
:14:23. > :14:26.better when you do that. Murray has changed so much over the years
:14:27. > :14:34.physically. He has taken it to a new level. He, Djokovic, Nadal and
:14:35. > :14:39.there. Sometimes 10-hour days, not just on the court, in the gym,
:14:40. > :14:44.Pilates, stretching. There is more to it than just hitting tennis
:14:45. > :14:49.balls. Yes, people do not understand what goes into it at this level. I
:14:50. > :14:56.know it is all sport but at the top, it is ridiculous. Let's face it,
:14:57. > :15:00.that is the only site of the tennis court that you are in complete
:15:01. > :15:03.control is your physical ability, so when he goes on the court Andy
:15:04. > :15:08.Murray knows there's basically in his mind he feels he is fitter than
:15:09. > :15:11.anyone else. Novak Djokovic to argue about that but in his mind he does
:15:12. > :15:15.not think there is anyone he plays that can run as many balls down as
:15:16. > :15:21.he can't, particularly over five sets. It is a great weapon when you
:15:22. > :15:23.go on court. Speaking of weapons, two different matches, using
:15:24. > :15:29.different weapons in both. Yesterday against Bedene, it was a super game
:15:30. > :15:34.from him and raised his level when it mattered, towards the latter
:15:35. > :15:38.stage of the match. I thought he played very well, complete contrast
:15:39. > :15:41.to playing Mahut in the first round, who was covering the net and giving
:15:42. > :15:47.him a target. He had to work the ball around and Bedene played very
:15:48. > :15:53.well. I loved his attitude since he came on the court. He has been very
:15:54. > :15:59.sharp, he is focused and once this. He has had a couple of niggles, but
:16:00. > :16:03.it has been positive and I think he's playing very well. For this
:16:04. > :16:07.tournament and Wimbledon looking ahead, he cannot be in better shape
:16:08. > :16:12.than right now after the French Open. Such a variety of shops on
:16:13. > :16:17.display. The choices and as every turn the ball comes over to him. The
:16:18. > :16:22.thing with Murray as we streak about him here, a British treasure. But
:16:23. > :16:25.overseas the public love him because he brings to the court something so
:16:26. > :16:31.different. People say today that a lot of tennis is a bit the same in
:16:32. > :16:37.some ways, but not Murray. He has so much variation. Every shot in the
:16:38. > :16:41.book. He is so quick, he has it all and people love that, they love his
:16:42. > :16:47.style. The drop shots, the logs, a death touch. He has so much feel.
:16:48. > :16:51.The service, the weapon, he has improved his second serve in the
:16:52. > :16:55.last two months. He changed it. He has made alterations and that is
:16:56. > :17:01.brave when you are already world number two. Guess why? He is not
:17:02. > :17:05.number one. He wants to be number one. Everything there is to get that
:17:06. > :17:10.level he will do that, which is why this man, a Van Ligman, is back in
:17:11. > :17:13.the picture. Alongside Jamie Delgado, that seems to be a dream
:17:14. > :17:18.team for him, really good friends with Jamie, so nice to have a friend
:17:19. > :17:24.as well. He's also a college coach with Gillies Miller, he raised him
:17:25. > :17:29.up the rankings as well. A bit of a worry yesterday with the right
:17:30. > :17:33.shoulder. We hope that is OK. But as the Kyle Edmund, we saw him standing
:17:34. > :17:38.next of Murray, he has physically changed as well. He is strong. No
:17:39. > :17:43.bad that -- no doubt about that. Using very good shape. We all speak
:17:44. > :17:47.that weapons in the game, big first serve and forehand. His backhand
:17:48. > :17:52.definitely improved. The thing he has to work on is his defending is
:17:53. > :17:56.not quite as good. The quick movements, he is not quite there
:17:57. > :18:00.yet. But he will improve, he is a good match player and loves a
:18:01. > :18:04.challenge and I cannot wait dizzy how he reacts to this. I hope Yumbis
:18:05. > :18:09.is the occasion, think he will and he will go out and put everything on
:18:10. > :18:11.the mark and see where he is at the level of Andy Murray. I think he
:18:12. > :18:17.will have learned a lot from playing in the Davis Cup tie. Making your
:18:18. > :18:21.debut in the final, it cannot get bigger and he thrive. He just ran
:18:22. > :18:24.out of gas because nerves and everything else, but the first two
:18:25. > :18:30.sets he was making golfing look like an average. Was brilliant. Should
:18:31. > :18:35.embrace this occasion. He had his first win over a top player against
:18:36. > :18:40.Gillies Simon, and some points from that, speak about weapons. His
:18:41. > :18:44.forehand is world-class. It is big. You busy the backhand has improved.
:18:45. > :18:48.It is a weakness but I don't think so any more. You cannot press on
:18:49. > :18:53.that side, the forehand, you can see the whip, not afraid to go into the
:18:54. > :19:00.net, which is good. He is becoming an all-round player and for British
:19:01. > :19:03.tennis and Davis Cup, his best surface is probably clay, which we
:19:04. > :19:09.haven't had from any years. He is coming in as a number two and if
:19:10. > :19:14.Andy doesn't play he will be a solid number one. It is looking good. And
:19:15. > :19:18.he was asked yesterday and said he is a potentially top 20 player. That
:19:19. > :19:25.is pretty good. Sadly top 50, will not disagree with top 20. Andy knows
:19:26. > :19:28.better. He has been around him so he will know, these players don't say
:19:29. > :19:32.things like that unless they mean it. He must make things happen
:19:33. > :19:36.today, like he did against Gillies Simon. He has to use his weapons and
:19:37. > :19:41.not get too much involved in the long rallies because he would win
:19:42. > :19:44.them. No, it is a dividing line when you go up against a player above you
:19:45. > :19:48.because you have to go slightly outside your comfort zone. You'd
:19:49. > :19:52.want to go too far ready areas, all over the place but if you go and
:19:53. > :19:56.play like a normal match he has no short so as to be aggressive and
:19:57. > :20:00.when he sees an opening there be no visitation. He may be has to make
:20:01. > :20:04.some more errors, even on the second serve or have to go more than
:20:05. > :20:08.normal. Maybe a few more double faults but he has to gamble. If he
:20:09. > :20:12.goes out and displays his game, that will not be enough. The Maastricht
:20:13. > :20:17.extra. He was speaking about how he has learned so much from Andy,
:20:18. > :20:21.including dealing with life on tour. He has added to his team,
:20:22. > :20:27.nutritionist, there is more to it than just having to get the diet
:20:28. > :20:31.fight and training right, all the injuries sorted. It is one of the
:20:32. > :20:36.great regret I have from when I played. I learned too late, hang
:20:37. > :20:39.around with the winners, the real winners. If you can hang around them
:20:40. > :20:42.and be around them in practice sessions and learn what they do of
:20:43. > :20:46.the court and had to get prepared, you will do pretty well. I ran the
:20:47. > :20:50.top guys whenever you get a chance because you will be a better player
:20:51. > :20:55.if you do that. Thank you. We know what to expect from Andy but this
:20:56. > :21:00.will be a test of nerve and belief for the 21-year-old Kyle Edmund.
:21:01. > :21:01.Let's sit back and enjoy this with Peter Fleming and Andrew Carson.
:21:02. > :21:06.COMMENTATOR: Thank you. You were married to
:21:07. > :21:14.Chrissy, that was hang around with the winner. We will contact you at
:21:15. > :21:19.the end of the set. Or whatever. This will be fun. The sun is
:21:20. > :21:26.shining, to quarterfinal day here. Two Brits playing each other, a very
:21:27. > :21:47.good Young one serving to a legendary middle-aged Andy Murray.
:21:48. > :21:55.Good to hear Andy Murray turned as middle-aged. Which makes us one foot
:21:56. > :22:23.in the grave! -- termed. On the first page of the Kyle Edmund
:22:24. > :22:28.playbook you will see this, big first serve, short reply, good
:22:29. > :22:29.footwork and then this wonderful, natural Rakitic speed through the
:22:30. > :22:35.ball. Very explosive. A settling start. 40-0 in the first
:22:36. > :23:10.game. Nice settler. Big crowd, this. A big
:23:11. > :23:13.arena to play in, the Davis Cup final. Peter Fleming has played, how
:23:14. > :23:23.many? Three. What was the biggest one? They were all pretty big. In
:23:24. > :23:26.terms of people watching? I guess, Cincinnati against Argentina. How
:23:27. > :23:31.does it affect you? When you play in front of a big crowd can get under
:23:32. > :23:35.the skin. It is exciting, it is always exciting. I'm sure Kyle is
:23:36. > :23:41.very nervous for this match, good that he first to got the first game
:23:42. > :24:10.-- that he got the first game under his belt.
:24:11. > :24:21.That is the Kyle Edmund supporting roles. They have obviously been had
:24:22. > :24:47.shopping together. Friends, coaches, agents, physios.
:24:48. > :24:50.There is a nutritionist somewhere called Glen as well. He works with
:24:51. > :25:11.both of these players. He will be neutral today.
:25:12. > :25:26.Tough ball for Andy Murray to deal with. A nice opportunity here early
:25:27. > :25:28.for the man from Beverley. He has won six of the first seven points
:25:29. > :26:30.here. Great start. Interesting in these early stages to
:26:31. > :26:33.see how Murray plays and where he plays against Kyle Edmund. If you
:26:34. > :26:36.want to look at an opponent and dissecting, look at the way Andy
:26:37. > :26:41.Murray plays against him on the three big points from 1530, Murray
:26:42. > :26:51.going to the Edmund forehand side each time on serve.
:26:52. > :27:00.The slide serve as such an important asset, especially on a grass court.
:27:01. > :27:06.In the dos court -- deuce court because it takes the opponent well
:27:07. > :27:09.out of court, stays low, sits through, difficult to return. Maybe
:27:10. > :27:30.steadier on the backhand return than the forehand? Perhaps.
:27:31. > :27:38.The old Daisy Cutter on the backhand side. No daisies here. But he will
:27:39. > :27:41.have taken a couple of millimetres of the grass, look at this one, that
:27:42. > :27:45.was the one from Edmund, sideways across. I really probing a short
:27:46. > :27:57.ball. It is the overhead, the missed one
:27:58. > :28:17.on the first point has caused this trouble as much as anything.
:28:18. > :28:25.That time the serve jamming Murray in the body, did not really get the
:28:26. > :29:00.strings on the ball as he would have liked.
:29:01. > :29:08.He doesn't miss many of those. He normally goes cross-court. Did not
:29:09. > :29:15.have quite enough time to go crosscourt, the approach just enough
:29:16. > :29:20.bite. Two break points saved. The sun to the first time a bit of a
:29:21. > :29:27.factor this week from the end Edmund is serving from.
:29:28. > :29:33.That is well done, three are wrote for the youngster.
:29:34. > :30:55.On a grass court you have two volley behind people, if you volley into
:30:56. > :31:01.the "People are running on so well these days and Murray won't miss a
:31:02. > :31:05.passing shot like that. Not enough time to cover those, is there,
:31:06. > :31:09.Peter? No question. Interesting tactic from Kyle Edmund. I'm sure on
:31:10. > :31:15.paper it sounds like a great idea, are mixed things up, serve and
:31:16. > :31:22.volley occasionally, but on break point down, Andy Murray is perhaps
:31:23. > :31:28.the last guy that that strategy will work against, simply because he is
:31:29. > :31:31.such an effective return. Puts the ball back into play almost every
:31:32. > :31:38.time, and often into awkward positions. Took five days off after
:31:39. > :31:41.completing his set of Grand Slam finals by making the French Open
:31:42. > :31:47.final where he lost to Novak Djokovic. Five days off to recover
:31:48. > :31:57.physically and emotionally. A fine clay court season he had. The
:31:58. > :32:01.weather, so far so good today. And despite all the rain we have had
:32:02. > :32:07.this week, the court appears to have dried out quite a bit. The footing
:32:08. > :32:12.looks a lot more secure than it did in the first couple of days. Yes,
:32:13. > :32:21.the corporate guests are making their way in, after dining. People
:32:22. > :32:25.always like to have a pop at the prawns amateurs, but it is much
:32:26. > :32:30.better than prom damages here, superb stuff. These corporate
:32:31. > :32:34.sponsors pay the bills and provide the field and stadium we are all
:32:35. > :33:00.enjoying, so we will show a little bit of patience - this time!
:33:01. > :33:10.That is a difficult shot to attempt, Murray's backhand screaming for
:33:11. > :33:15.Edmund to change to rich in on it. That is about the most difficult
:33:16. > :33:49.direction he could have picked. In change direction.
:33:50. > :33:56.And that perhaps is the area of the game Kyle Edmund has improved the
:33:57. > :33:59.most in, over the last six months or so. The backhand has become a
:34:00. > :34:21.weapon. Not all good news for the Murray
:34:22. > :34:24.family today on the tennis court. Jamie Murray, the world number one
:34:25. > :34:37.and a moment in the doubles, with his partner Bruno Soares, have lost
:34:38. > :35:10.in a final set tie-break to Chris Guccione and Andre Sa.
:35:11. > :35:14.The most keenly anticipated match, I would say, at the tournament so far,
:35:15. > :35:59.this all British quarterfinal. Murray's forehand was an absolute
:36:00. > :36:01.rocket, the one prior to that forehand up the line from Edmund. He
:36:02. > :36:23.did well to steer it into the court. Every big point Murray is serving to
:36:24. > :36:29.Kyle Edmund's forehand. Kyle needs to adjust to that and take away the
:36:30. > :36:33.slice serve, it is clearly Andy's favourite serve. An big points, move
:36:34. > :36:43.over a few inches, don't give it to him.
:36:44. > :36:47.Wouldn't be surprised if he changed the direction on this one, now he's
:36:48. > :37:26.up. Really got a lot of explosive, fast
:37:27. > :37:43.twitch fibres, Kyle Edmund. His forehand is an absolute weapon.
:37:44. > :38:24.A bit nervy. Certainly a serve that Murray was shocked with.
:38:25. > :38:48.A couple of donations, the last one particularly, when he missed double
:38:49. > :38:51.fault in the second set. A superbly played game by Edmund, that
:38:52. > :38:53.certainly will raise his spirits. Certainly not the case, though, the
:38:54. > :40:15.Andy Murray. Edmund making good use of the first
:40:16. > :40:41.ball. Watching Kyle played the other day
:40:42. > :40:47.in his first match, it was the first time I've been able to see him live
:40:48. > :40:51.in a while. To think it me, first as backhand has improved. Secondly, he
:40:52. > :40:56.moves up from the back of the court so much better than he previously
:40:57. > :41:00.did. Clearly he has been working on his first step into the court,
:41:01. > :41:30.taking the ball early, giving opponents a little time to react.
:41:31. > :41:46.Here at Queen's Club, a quarterfinal between two British players, Kyle
:41:47. > :41:51.Edmund from Beverley in Yorkshire. He benefited from the withdrawal of
:41:52. > :41:54.Paul Henry Matthew, the French player, in the second round, having
:41:55. > :42:00.beaten another Frenchman, Gilles Simon. Better introduce you to some
:42:01. > :42:04.of the people in his box. I think we will see a lot of Kyle Edmund in
:42:05. > :42:11.years to come. In the blue T-shirt is Ryan Jones. Alan Jones, many of
:42:12. > :42:17.you will remember, that is his son. On the right, Fraser Wright, a
:42:18. > :42:22.friend of Kyle's, as well as looking after some of his business aspects.
:42:23. > :42:27.Ian on the left, a physiotherapist, in the white T-shirt. He has his own
:42:28. > :42:33.practice in north London and will be spending more time on the road. They
:42:34. > :42:38.are interesting, it's good. 21 years old, spending his prize-money in the
:42:39. > :42:43.right way. And Tom Davis, just out of shot. A fine player himself, a
:42:44. > :42:52.coach. He is from Beverley as well, and a good player himself. So the
:42:53. > :42:56.support group are in there. Also a young lad who has a brain tumour
:42:57. > :43:00.wanted to spend time with Kyle this week and see some tennis. They have
:43:01. > :43:09.become friends. That is the professional setup. Mum Denise and
:43:10. > :43:10.dad Stephen sit elsewhere, they separate the personal and
:43:11. > :44:07.professional. This forehand of Kyle Edmund's...
:44:08. > :44:11.This can do damage. This kid packs a punch, both with the serve and the
:44:12. > :44:27.forehand. Backhand improving as well.
:44:28. > :44:34.Average forehand speed of Kyle Edmund, 84, that is filled with
:44:35. > :45:20.adrenaline. Average, 84. That is big.
:45:21. > :45:27.Interesting comment from Andy there, you're over thinking on your serve
:45:28. > :45:31.again. Good point. The goal really is to think as little as possible
:45:32. > :45:37.out on the court, at least while the ball is in play. In between points,
:45:38. > :45:39.OK, fine, think about tactics. But when it in play, just react and hit
:45:40. > :45:58.it to the target. Lots of forehand return Mrs from
:45:59. > :46:01.Kyle Edmund so far and still at 3-3 and playing well. -- forehand
:46:02. > :46:15.misses. Yes, it is starting to appear that
:46:16. > :46:19.Andy is not just hitting his favourite serve, the slice, but
:46:20. > :46:38.targeting a perceived weakness in Edmund.
:46:39. > :46:45.And that's the problem with the body serve, if you miss the target, was
:46:46. > :46:51.trying to slide this intermarry's left hip, but if you missed the
:46:52. > :47:07.target it is in the hitting zone, punished. -- into Murray's.
:47:08. > :47:12.Dear oh dear, that's horrible, that's two of those. Playing it a
:47:13. > :47:17.little bit too quick. Perhaps looking up into the sun as well from
:47:18. > :47:21.this side. That right hip coming through a little early, and that
:47:22. > :48:11.chest as well, maybe, getting sideways map. A big one, 0- 30.
:48:12. > :48:18.You can count those misses. On one hand. A cardinal error for a player
:48:19. > :48:58.of his standard. Oh, yes! Good work there from Andy
:48:59. > :49:11.Murray. Well, that's how well he's moving,
:49:12. > :49:17.goodness me. That was passed in, if he didn't dive... He had to. Well
:49:18. > :49:25.handled from Edmund there. Good work. We had Begovic here the other
:49:26. > :49:30.day, the Chelsea goalkeeper. He would be pleased with this one. Look
:49:31. > :49:34.at this. Plays it well, Kyle Edmund, just plays it across court. Looks
:49:35. > :49:42.like it might have got past him. He did well. Good split step. You can
:49:43. > :49:48.see him here, land Carroll, he can go either way. Virtually the whole
:49:49. > :49:56.net covered. At what age do you have to stop doing that, because you lose
:49:57. > :50:02.all sense of grace and poise? The moment you finish. Well, I think
:50:03. > :50:08.that age gets higher and higher each year, when these players come more
:50:09. > :50:14.and more astute as to how to remain fit, how to rehab injuries. I think
:50:15. > :50:21.the days of players thought of being over the hill in their late 20s are
:50:22. > :50:28.over. All these guys seem so fit going into their 30s. What was it,
:50:29. > :50:34.50 players in the French Open draw were 30 or over? Amazing stat. Kyle
:50:35. > :50:39.Edmund one of the good young and is, for sure. People are still filtering
:50:40. > :50:45.in here. There are narrow walkways. And quite narrow seat is, as well.
:50:46. > :51:03.With a break of serve, Andy Murray. And serving with the new balls. That
:51:04. > :52:42.one seemed to get to the fence very quickly.
:52:43. > :52:52.Forehand again. You are right, every big point Murray is serving to
:52:53. > :52:54.Edmund's forehand. It would be noticed by other players, in
:52:55. > :53:19.particular other players' coaches. You get to a certain age and certain
:53:20. > :53:23.position, certain ranking in the game, and at that point your game is
:53:24. > :53:27.well-known in the locker room and other coaches who talk all the time,
:53:28. > :53:32.and are around the game. It's their job to notice these things, where to
:53:33. > :53:54.serve, what strengths and weaknesses has. -- somebody has.
:53:55. > :54:04.We talked about how Murray makes so many returns, and yet in the last
:54:05. > :54:06.year especially, he hits seconds serve returns with a great deal of
:54:07. > :55:25.power. Murray seems in a state of shock,
:55:26. > :55:27.really. Especially when hitting passing shots. So deadly accurate
:55:28. > :56:00.most of the time. He is big but he is pretty mobile,
:56:01. > :57:00.as well. Pretty interesting set, this. There
:57:01. > :57:05.have been breaks of serve. Andy Murray not really troubled, playing
:57:06. > :57:09.50-60% of what we know he can. Looks completely in control, like it was
:57:10. > :57:14.against the British number two, Aljaz Bedene in the second round,
:57:15. > :57:20.played yesterday. Ivan Lendl, big news that he is back on board. That
:57:21. > :57:25.is the coaching set up talking with Judy. It is interesting, to bring
:57:26. > :57:32.somebody else like that in and it is the talking point of the week. He is
:57:33. > :57:35.the man who was at the helm of Murray's game when he had all his
:57:36. > :57:40.greatest successes. So it has to be a great idea that Murray brings him
:57:41. > :57:46.back. I was surprised, but delighted. If we want to see the
:57:47. > :57:51.best out of Andy Murray, and that means beating Novak Djokovic, Ivan
:57:52. > :57:54.Lendl has to be the man. No question, Ivan Wendell has a
:57:55. > :58:00.straightforward approach to the game, a no-nonsense approach, if you
:58:01. > :58:03.will. -- Ivan Lendl. I think Andy respects it, respects just about
:58:04. > :58:21.everything out of his mouth. Just having to wait as people
:58:22. > :58:23.settle. And Andy Murray serving for the first set of this quarterfinal
:58:24. > :58:56.here at Queen's. That was a mental error, Murray
:58:57. > :58:57.expecting the return of serve to land beyond the baseline. With
:58:58. > :00:05.unprepared when it didn't. Comfortable hold. Murray cruising
:00:06. > :00:08.along in third gear. One setup in this quarterfinal. The British and
:00:09. > :00:12.one looking very good on Centre Court. Well they change ends let's
:00:13. > :00:16.look at a few results. The Egon Championships, earlier this morning
:00:17. > :00:22.Roberto Bautista Agut came on to complete his match with Young. It
:00:23. > :00:26.was suspended because of rain yesterday and he raced through the
:00:27. > :00:29.second set 6-2. Straight sets victory and he will be back on
:00:30. > :00:38.course to face Milos Raonic to later. A busy day for him and it was
:00:39. > :00:45.a busy day for Marin Cilic. A longer 3-set match against Steve Johnson,
:00:46. > :00:48.former champion. Came through in three sets, 6-4 in the third and
:00:49. > :00:58.Cilic will face the winner of Murray and Edmund. Alexander the highest
:00:59. > :01:06.ranked teenager in the men's game plans reach the semifinals. Marcos
:01:07. > :01:13.Baghdatis 76-63 that makes 7-6, 6-3. Roger Federer, when threes first set
:01:14. > :01:25.really quickly against David Goffin. The informed dollar ATM -- Dummett
:01:26. > :01:28.time. And in the ladies Egon classic, the Australian Open
:01:29. > :01:36.champion Angelique Kerber dropped the first set in her second match
:01:37. > :01:42.but came through. Disappointment for the British players left in the
:01:43. > :01:50.draw. Heather Watson went down the world over 40 and Joel -- Johanna
:01:51. > :01:54.Konta last two Wickmayer, player ranked 30 places below her. That is
:01:55. > :02:01.what is happening in tennis around the world. All eyes on Murray and
:02:02. > :02:03.Edmund. Second set, Edmund deserved. COMMENTATOR:
:02:04. > :02:12.Just done a challenger level there is a tournament is going on in Kyle
:02:13. > :02:14.Edmund home county of Yorkshire. Bright and climb remaining in the
:02:15. > :02:21.quarterfinals and playing Ryan Harris as the challenger. The last
:02:22. > :02:32.GB interest as far as I know around the place.
:02:33. > :02:37.Interesting spectators today come including Michael Parkinson, who was
:02:38. > :02:42.his sport. Some lovely words to say about Muhammad Ali, his passing
:02:43. > :02:48.recently. It was Anna that smack it was a highlight when they spoke with
:02:49. > :04:00.each other. -- it was always a highlight.
:04:01. > :04:11.I don't believe it! That is terrible. That is the easy choccy
:04:12. > :04:14.will miss this week. That's a shot he will. He has missed three from
:04:15. > :04:20.that end, that was the bounced smash but missed to come out of the area.
:04:21. > :04:21.Lost complete Lee on the overhead. The sun went behind the cloud as
:04:22. > :04:44.well. That is away. It is a match full of
:04:45. > :04:53.errors just now. Sometimes it just worked out that way.
:04:54. > :04:59.You true bowler Dusanova, Andy Murray, making a few mistakes. --
:05:00. > :05:02.not too bothered. How Edmund is doing well considering they try to
:05:03. > :05:08.deliver his washing machine this morning, where they did this --
:05:09. > :05:17.delivered, at 6:30am. He has a nice new to bed flat in south-west
:05:18. > :05:21.London. And they arrived early. I believe his mother has to be in
:05:22. > :05:27.between two and six tomorrow to take another delivery but the entire
:05:28. > :05:29.places boxes as he moves in onto the property ladder with his tennis
:05:30. > :06:03.winnings. I will tell you his real passion,
:06:04. > :06:05.cast. He is a petrol head. He was thrilled that Jeremy Clarkson was
:06:06. > :06:08.watching him the other day against Gilles Simon. His ambition is to get
:06:09. > :06:26.on that programme of his. I'm sure he would take an invitation
:06:27. > :07:19.from the Chris Evans version as well.
:07:20. > :07:46.He is cruising along quite comfortably, Andy Murray.
:07:47. > :07:55.101 mile are second serve. Complete control of the ball. That particular
:07:56. > :08:00.serve, not much rhythm on the first. He is cruising, there is no chance
:08:01. > :08:03.at this point of there being any result other than Andy Murray
:08:04. > :08:07.winning. This is interesting, can Kyle Edmund do anything about it?
:08:08. > :08:12.This is what the top guys are able to do, he is controlling affairs.
:08:13. > :08:36.Interesting to see how Edmund reacts.
:08:37. > :09:30.Wow. Did it catch the line? It certainly appears as though it did.
:09:31. > :09:35.Any disparity between these two, sadly does not appear to be on the
:09:36. > :09:40.Edmund serve. He has played well behind it today. It is to somehow
:09:41. > :10:04.figure out a way to put some more returns in play an big points.
:10:05. > :10:15.Edmund leads to- one. 2016, and even year for this championship. In even
:10:16. > :10:21.years Andy Murray has won six matches and lost four at Queen's
:10:22. > :10:29.Club. In old years, he has won 21 matches and lost one. That is pretty
:10:30. > :10:34.weird. He is an old guy, clearly. It is interesting how Edmund is able to
:10:35. > :10:39.rush his opponent today, one of the quickest men on the court. His
:10:40. > :10:43.forehand is his weapon. 94 Mallon are was one of them that he hit in
:10:44. > :10:49.the previous game that is rushed Andy Murray, even though he was a
:10:50. > :10:53.good 15-18 feet by the baseline and over the years as he learns how to
:10:54. > :10:58.control this, is number one weapon in his game. He will certainly take
:10:59. > :11:06.some scouts but everyone is playing the game, what can he get to in the
:11:07. > :11:11.rankings? Have you see it? It all depends how long he continues to
:11:12. > :11:14.grow. He could be a top 20 player, I did not think so a year ago but he
:11:15. > :11:26.has certainly improved so much in the last year that the ceiling
:11:27. > :11:27.appears to be rising. Top 20. Yes. Talk is cheap. We will have to wait
:11:28. > :12:11.and see. If not higher. The sky is the limit.
:12:12. > :12:19.So much depends on what the guy believes he can do. With a forehand
:12:20. > :12:22.like that, we spoke about the forehand come makes a lot of balls
:12:23. > :12:24.because he seems to understand when to hit it flat and when to hit it
:12:25. > :13:13.with more spin and keep it in. That is the sort of error that we
:13:14. > :14:42.don't normally associate with Andy Murray.
:14:43. > :14:51.Edmund leads 3-1. An unhappy Andy Murray, he will have to get going.
:14:52. > :15:00.Not going through the motions,. He is unsettled. He is definitely
:15:01. > :15:08.either overthinking it or just not feeling the ball. Now he has very
:15:09. > :15:13.excited 21 at the other end who is six foot one and full of muscles
:15:14. > :15:32.with nothing to lose in this match. He has the wind in his sales now.
:15:33. > :15:40.Go! Fire up. Just lacking a bit of adrenaline. Nothing like the threat
:15:41. > :15:42.of losing a set or a match to get you going, bit of greatest -- crisis
:15:43. > :16:02.motivation. That looked wide on the baseline. Is
:16:03. > :16:09.he checking? Mr Edmonds challenging the call. It has certainly got some
:16:10. > :16:19.chalk on it, where that came from will be interesting. Was it on the
:16:20. > :16:24.baseline white? Just out. Call stands. Good overall. -- good
:16:25. > :17:09.overrule. Fantastic return of serve. Just lent
:17:10. > :17:16.on the backhand, straight down the middle, deep. Come on Andy! Just
:17:17. > :17:45.wants to break that. Deuce Mr Edmund with two challenges
:17:46. > :17:49.remaining. It is interesting, it appears that Andy is just a little
:17:50. > :17:51.flat, almost like he's trying to keep the governor on so he does not
:17:52. > :18:13.explode. Anything over the net would have
:18:14. > :18:22.been good. Just enough to return of serve. And then he turned defence
:18:23. > :18:27.into attack. There is the return. Talk about Novak Djokovic. Murray
:18:28. > :18:33.problem probably number two in the world as well. -- Murray, probably.
:18:34. > :18:46.Sometimes number one. I think you can make a good argument
:18:47. > :18:48.for calling Andy Murray the best return in the game. He certainly is
:18:49. > :19:16.very aggressive at times. Even the boys are having a laugh he
:19:17. > :19:36.has missed so many overheads. Childhood friend.
:19:37. > :19:47.You can't miss that. Deuce. Interesting choice, it appeared like
:19:48. > :19:48.that was the perfect time to go behind Murray, he was sprinting to
:19:49. > :20:23.the". -- open court. That is the second serve return that
:20:24. > :20:27.Murray has utilised so often this year, stands inside the baseline,
:20:28. > :20:45.takes it early and returns it with interest. Very aggressive.
:20:46. > :21:03.Murray has such a great match player, he strikes back and breaks
:21:04. > :21:08.back, it is 3-2 in the second set. We'll be right back with this match
:21:09. > :21:12.but another of the super coaches as lender watches Murray on Centre
:21:13. > :21:15.Court, John Maccarone has been on court with his charge, Milos Raonic,
:21:16. > :21:21.the big serving Canadian and he will be next on court to face Roberto
:21:22. > :21:25.Bautista Agut. There is McEnroe and already the McEnroe effect on he's
:21:26. > :21:29.being more aggressive, Milos Raonic, this week and Machenaud encouraging
:21:30. > :21:35.him to come forward and really attack the play. That is the next of
:21:36. > :21:39.the quarterfinals. McEnroe will take seat, probably the same on Evander
:21:40. > :21:46.Lendl is in. I wonder if they'll have words on the way they are or
:21:47. > :21:55.not. What you think? They will fake it. How big a rivalry was it? There
:21:56. > :22:02.was no love lost between the two of those. Obviously now they have a
:22:03. > :22:06.great mutual respect. But when they were doing battle, they were not
:22:07. > :22:20.many niceties exchanged. Ravage Murray -- Raonic, Murray. I
:22:21. > :22:44.wonder that will be the final. We will find out.
:22:45. > :24:56.Mr Edmund challenging the call. No challenge.
:24:57. > :25:03.There is no question that is moving forward, Kyle Edmund is a force. To
:25:04. > :25:10.answer your question as to how high he can go, I think it depends on how
:25:11. > :25:11.he developed his defensive skills. His ability to put returns into
:25:12. > :25:25.play. I hope the noise was worse than any
:25:26. > :25:39.injury he might have. It's always a shock. Those abductor muscles can
:25:40. > :25:46.often take a beating on this surface. Just try to change
:25:47. > :25:55.correction, Edmund does well to play the ball, pushes off the right foot
:25:56. > :26:00.and it goes. He will have definitely strained a few sinews in that
:26:01. > :26:07.muscle. The question is how many and how badly. He seems to be all right.
:26:08. > :26:45.The cameras will be checking if they got that.
:26:46. > :26:56.And I think that bitter frustration is the thought of the next few weeks
:26:57. > :26:58.coming up. It is something that will be on the go. Will it disappear in a
:26:59. > :27:39.day or two? Yes. Looking for that opportunity.
:27:40. > :27:42.Fantastic footwork from Kyle Edmund. Murray is very disappointed to have
:27:43. > :27:51.dropped serve for a third time in this match. Talk about a big-time
:27:52. > :27:57.conversion of a break point. Good, deep ball. Edmund, edging his way
:27:58. > :28:04.into that corner, hoping to see a forehand. The timing of that move
:28:05. > :28:08.when you run around your backhand is absolutely everything because if
:28:09. > :28:12.Murray had seen him moving to hit a forehand he might have slipped the
:28:13. > :28:15.backhand down the line and got the point. Excellent work from Kyle
:28:16. > :30:31.Edmund, 96 mile are forehand to finish the job for- two.
:30:32. > :30:51.Kyle Edmund, looking extremely at ease at the moment.
:30:52. > :31:20.Murray, on the other hand, distracted.
:31:21. > :31:45.Just holding off on this one. Kyle Edmund off to the forehand side.
:31:46. > :32:00.Four aces this match, Kyle Edmund, all of them in the second set.
:32:01. > :32:25.He's doing himself prowled here. --, my. Andy Murray is just trying to
:32:26. > :32:31.get through the day, he is a class above, may be two classes above his
:32:32. > :32:35.opponent, but Kyle is doing well. Things like this don't help. Kyle
:32:36. > :32:43.did well to dig this one out of the corner. The backhand pass, Murray
:32:44. > :32:47.tried to change direction, a worrying scream, but he appears to
:32:48. > :32:50.be fine. It is always a surprise under shock when that happens, but I
:32:51. > :32:54.don't think we are seeing any lasting damage, or we hope that is
:32:55. > :33:00.the case. What's been interesting, look at this, when you look at the
:33:01. > :33:06.return placements, Murray returned pretty safe, middle of the court
:33:07. > :33:10.most of the time or short, not going to deep. Then you look at Edmund's
:33:11. > :33:15.return placement, a lot deeper and harder, he is going for it more,
:33:16. > :33:26.would you agree with that? I think Murray perhaps it's hard to read
:33:27. > :33:33.that much into it. We have seen Andy return, edible quite hard, going for
:33:34. > :33:38.more conservative targets perhaps. -- hit the ball quite hard. Higher
:33:39. > :33:56.ranked man Andy Murray in trouble here.
:33:57. > :34:11.I think the yelp we heard from Andy when he fell was born of fear,
:34:12. > :34:12.really. That hurts, I hope it's not bad. Thankfully, it doesn't appear
:34:13. > :34:46.to be. Mr Murray is challenging the call.
:34:47. > :35:45.The ball was called out. Mr Murray has one challenge
:35:46. > :35:59.remaining. Don't say this guy doesn't have any hands.
:36:00. > :36:10.Here is the game coming up, this will be interesting. Kyle Edmund in
:36:11. > :36:13.the top 100 of the world last summer, tremendous challenge a
:36:14. > :36:19.player. Right on the verge of leaving challengers behind for quite
:36:20. > :36:25.some time at the moment. Really getting established at this level
:36:26. > :36:26.now, serving for a set against Andy Murray. That would be great news for
:36:27. > :36:45.him. Line ball. That was unlucky, the ball checked
:36:46. > :36:49.on the line. Edmonds was well off balance when he hit the next return,
:36:50. > :37:04.which landed short and he was punished.
:37:05. > :37:10.He made that look incredibly easy. I promise you, it wasn't! That is a
:37:11. > :38:31.tough shot. So what is that man's belief like
:38:32. > :38:59.right now? Can he put down two big serves?
:39:00. > :39:06.That shot's going to make a lot of money. Already has. Plenty more to
:39:07. > :39:28.come. Well, what a fascinating moment that
:39:29. > :39:33.was and great presence of mind from Kyle Edmund. Lovely kick-serve out
:39:34. > :39:42.wide and moving behind it, it took Murray onto that still moist grass,
:39:43. > :39:47.outside the normal playing surface. Murray slipping, but it was the
:39:48. > :39:55.serve, it was the serve from Kyle Edmund that deserved the credit in
:39:56. > :39:58.that game. Of course, we focus on Andy Murray. But some high-level
:39:59. > :40:32.matchplay from Kyle Edmund. A lovely backhand from Murray, it
:40:33. > :40:36.really was. When he stamps that front foot down and lets the
:40:37. > :40:44.backhand fly, it arrives with the opponent which such weight to it.
:40:45. > :41:49.He just held back, Kyle Edmund, on that fearsome forehand on the last
:41:50. > :41:57.one and elected to play with a little more caution. Reaping the
:41:58. > :42:01.reward. Very good game. It's all going into the computer, this, a
:42:02. > :42:26.chance to take Murray to a third set.
:42:27. > :42:39.Wow, that is a tremendous effort. Well done Kyle Edmund! He has
:42:40. > :42:52.levelled it. And he showed us a very clean, match playing brain there.
:42:53. > :42:58.Absolutely. And Kyle will be thrilled with how he came back from
:42:59. > :43:05.15-40 in that game, played a couple of really savvy points. Backhand
:43:06. > :43:11.down the line. He played that last set point as though he were the
:43:12. > :43:18.favourite to win this match. Brushed aside Murray. The question is, for
:43:19. > :43:23.how much longer can he maintained that attitude? A great effort,
:43:24. > :43:26.though. Murray was certainly in control of the match. He was
:43:27. > :43:32.dictating what was happening out there and it just seemed to be a
:43:33. > :43:37.matter of time. We did pose the question, what could Edmund do to
:43:38. > :43:42.turn it around? Just finding the court a bit more, settled in. An
:43:43. > :43:46.hour and 22 and he looks completely at home. What a useful match this is
:43:47. > :43:52.going forward for him, and he may yet win it. Yes, he may. Obviously
:43:53. > :43:59.that would be a major shock, but he has shown us a lot, especially in
:44:00. > :44:03.his abilities to attack the Murray defence. Murray so well known for
:44:04. > :44:08.his ability to counterpunch and fend off opponents. And not an easy
:44:09. > :44:12.situation for Andy Murray. Playing this young man who has stayed at his
:44:13. > :44:18.house and has always been this young kid growing up. Now the kid tries to
:44:19. > :44:24.repay him by knocking him off his perch. This is not easy in front of
:44:25. > :44:29.this crowd and TV audience. Perhaps Andy came into this thinking, I'd
:44:30. > :44:37.like to work on this on this and this, and stay calm. And to desire
:44:38. > :44:43.off the ball, just for a moment. Will have to dig just a little
:44:44. > :44:47.deeper now. Sue Barker was telling us know joy today for Heather Watson
:44:48. > :45:08.or Johanna Konta. This would be a very interesting
:45:09. > :46:24.set. Murray needs to respond to this challenge.
:46:25. > :46:33.Perhaps just a bit of a let down for Edmund here. Can't afford to allow
:46:34. > :46:34.this to last any longer. His first couple of games so important to set
:46:35. > :47:24.the stage for this decider. The value of making your opponent
:47:25. > :47:28.playing one more ball, it doesn't have to be beautiful, just get it
:47:29. > :47:32.in. I'm not sure how well he hit that ball. Murray might initially
:47:33. > :47:47.have thought it was going long. No mistaking that one. It was a
:47:48. > :47:54.winner the moment it touched his strings. Didn't touch them for very
:47:55. > :48:01.long. That short take-back as well. That's natural power. Yeah. If I was
:48:02. > :48:06.his coaches I would say, jettisoned that attempt at a forehand chip
:48:07. > :48:13.return, just hit it like that one. Scared the life out of opponents.
:48:14. > :48:20.Even if you miss balls, if you make errors, as he did their... The
:48:21. > :48:55.threat of winner returns will scare a lot of opponents off.
:48:56. > :49:08.He can hit forehands as well. As if we didn't know! So, this match is
:49:09. > :49:14.certainly living up to its billings its billing as what they called the
:49:15. > :49:24.Battle of Britain, which may be a bit dramatic. Then, and Aljaz Bedene
:49:25. > :49:31.yesterday. The under 12 Great Britain players have taken the girls
:49:32. > :49:38.and Boys' Doubles titles this week. That's good news. Sue Westwood is
:49:39. > :49:45.listening to us from Redditch in Worcestershire. As we look at
:49:46. > :49:49.Michael Parkinson. She has got a question about John McEnroe, which
:49:50. > :50:16.we will get two in a second. Sue says now that John is an team
:50:17. > :50:21.Raonic, doesn't mean you won't be commentating at Wimbledon? No, it
:50:22. > :51:34.doesn't mean that, we just have to get our timing right.
:51:35. > :51:46.Oh, he's missed it and... A challenge. The ball was called out.
:51:47. > :51:50.It's a big point, this one. Murray has upped the intensity, hasn't he?
:51:51. > :51:57.A little bit of weight to each of the balls he is heading. The volley
:51:58. > :52:15.popped up on Edmund. That was a bad miss.
:52:16. > :52:31.A break to love. CNET so many times. -- seen it so many times. Saw it
:52:32. > :52:37.most recently, two sets down to Radek Stepanek in the French Open,
:52:38. > :52:42.he came back. 2-1 down against Borg in the second round of the French
:52:43. > :53:01.Open, wins it in five. Murray never beaten.
:53:02. > :53:07.The question remains, did those five set match is physically derail Andy
:53:08. > :53:13.Murray and cost him the final, perhaps? He played Karlovic and John
:53:14. > :53:16.Isner after that, a lot easier in terms of physical demands.
:53:17. > :53:49.Different, anyway. Kyle has done really well to reach
:53:50. > :53:56.this point, but it appears he is going through a 5-10 minute lull,
:53:57. > :53:58.where mentally he is fatigued, making more unforced errors than he
:53:59. > :55:08.has in quite some time. So, the memento and shift that we
:55:09. > :55:13.may have expected, seems to have happened. The question is, what can
:55:14. > :55:20.Kyle Edmund do about it? He responded very well in the second
:55:21. > :55:23.set to win it 6-3. The difference perhaps is that he is facing a
:55:24. > :55:31.different Andy Murray from the one he played in the early stages of set
:55:32. > :55:35.number two. Murray now fully engaged. You get the feeling he's
:55:36. > :55:38.not likely to donate as many unforced errors as he did an hour or
:55:39. > :55:51.so ago. Kyle Edmund to do what, in terms of
:55:52. > :55:59.British players, what only Tim Henman has done, beat Andy Murray.
:56:00. > :56:07.He beat him three times. Murray beat Henman three times, Henman just got
:56:08. > :56:12.him the once, in Bangkok. This is a different generation. Tim Henman
:56:13. > :56:17.beat Andy Murray? How did he do that? By getting to the net and
:56:18. > :56:26.volleying like a genius, I can only assume.
:56:27. > :56:37.Certainly caught my be picking up a bit of moisture at this point. --
:56:38. > :56:45.the court. Just spitting rain a little, that's all.
:56:46. > :56:57.Interesting that Kyle wants to talk about the state of the court rather
:56:58. > :57:03.than Andy. He is losing, so it would be a good
:57:04. > :57:13.idea to get off at this point. He's done well, got the umpire off the
:57:14. > :57:23.chair. Well, the crowd want more... But Kyle perfectly entitled to fight
:57:24. > :57:26.his corner there. This kid just got jeered. Everyone is having a good
:57:27. > :57:45.time watching the match. When it comes to jeering, Queen's
:57:46. > :58:05.Club has a very polite jeer. I don't know, I think they can rise
:58:06. > :58:12.to the occasion from time to time. Not the rowdiest sports ground. --
:58:13. > :58:20.sports crowd. I don't think we need water cannon
:58:21. > :58:41.here today! Beautiful shot. Putting young Kyle
:58:42. > :58:48.to the sword here, isn't he? He most certainly is. Edmonds needs to
:58:49. > :59:23.answer the bell now or this match will very quickly be done.
:59:24. > :59:32.Yeah, you go into that forehand at your peril. Murray I'm sure, thought
:59:33. > :59:55.he'd hit it, a pretty demanding shot came back again. At twice the speed.
:59:56. > :00:03.The second serve, perhaps a little bit fine. Not at least especially
:00:04. > :00:36.well. Murray manhandled it. This match will go into the vault of
:00:37. > :00:42.Kyle Edmonds and give him something to think about, because mentally he
:00:43. > :01:24.appeared to hit the wall. Right at the start of this third set.
:01:25. > :01:42.Let's get out one as well. Thank you.
:01:43. > :01:49.Fabulous, isn't it? This demonstration of top-class tennis
:01:50. > :03:22.from Andy Murray. The last 17 minutes of this set.
:03:23. > :03:28.Every time you going to his forehand, that is the one he had to
:03:29. > :03:31.guard against. You almost have to hit the ball and put your racket out
:03:32. > :03:40.and move in that direction is it away. He is deadly on the crosscourt
:03:41. > :03:47.pass. And that is 5-0 and a first for those games in this decider were
:03:48. > :03:54.over in 15 minutes. Only 20 minutes played in this set. When that last
:03:55. > :03:58.game at Wimbledon when he served out against Novak Djokovic alone was 12
:03:59. > :04:07.minutes long. He has put this one away pretty quickly. Yes, I think he
:04:08. > :04:11.will be pleased to win and to win decisively in this final set and get
:04:12. > :04:22.off the court before any possible rain delays. It remains to be seen
:04:23. > :04:27.if he does that. I was just thinking that he hasn't won a match at
:04:28. > :04:30.Wimbledon yet, Kyle Edmund, he has had three world card in the past,
:04:31. > :04:35.unable to get through the first round. He has seen enough action
:04:36. > :04:39.this week even though the second one was a walkover. Certainly the
:04:40. > :04:44.confidence will have raised this afternoon and he will be looking for
:04:45. > :04:50.a trip. Absolutely, this match will be a thrill for him because he has
:04:51. > :04:54.only won two matches on grass on the tour and his entire career. The
:04:55. > :05:06.second one being against Seymour on Monday. To come out and play as well
:05:07. > :05:12.as he did in both matches here will help show how much he has improved.
:05:13. > :05:31.And how much he can expect to improve in the future.
:05:32. > :05:47.He is locked in now. 95 miles an hour on the forehand side.
:05:48. > :05:55.I was just thinking Kyle Edmund has played is now at the French Open,
:05:56. > :06:00.just recently. Having won around their come big Novak Djokovic in
:06:01. > :07:25.Miami. Murray here. It strengthens you.
:07:26. > :07:30.At least that is something in this deciding set for Kyle Edmund,
:07:31. > :07:32.although Andy Murray is now serving for a place in the semifinal against
:07:33. > :07:39.Marin Cilic. With new tennis balls, which will be
:07:40. > :09:47.helpful. Well. It is fascinating. That is the
:09:48. > :09:51.steer that Lendl gave Andy Murray when Andy was looking over their
:09:52. > :10:15.come giving it words. He's looking over again. He will never react.
:10:16. > :10:50.COMMENTATOR: That will do! Deuce. The slice
:10:51. > :10:54.backhand puts opponents in all kinds of trouble. Not easy to drive it. It
:10:55. > :11:34.opens up the court. That is it. Andy Murray is through
:11:35. > :11:39.to the semifinal here in the sunshine of Queen's Club. Respect
:11:40. > :11:46.for his younger Davis Cup team-mate, who took a set of him, about an hour
:11:47. > :11:53.and 50 played, one-way traffic. 6-1 in the third. Very much the senior
:11:54. > :11:58.role taken in the decider. Great know-how and expertise at the
:11:59. > :12:03.beginning. He really accelerated through Kyle Edmund and took the
:12:04. > :12:08.first four games in the first 15 minutes of the third set. If Kyle
:12:09. > :12:15.wanted a passage of play back it would certainly be back. Murray is
:12:16. > :12:19.through to play Marin Cilic in the semifinal. We still have 2/4-finals
:12:20. > :12:26.to be played here and hopefully under sunny skies here at Queen's
:12:27. > :12:32.Club. Miller versus Tomic and Bautista-Agut versus Raonic. Should
:12:33. > :12:43.be very proud of his effort here, Edmund. It was very good indeed.
:12:44. > :12:47.Murray has a 10-2 head-to-head, could be Murray in the final. Must
:12:48. > :12:52.get through Cilic first. For the moment he has beaten Kyle Edmund and
:12:53. > :12:56.is talking with John Nvidia. We will speak to both players on court
:12:57. > :13:00.because it is the first quarterfinal between two British players in the
:13:01. > :13:09.history of professional tennis. That is in 50 years, huge testimony to
:13:10. > :13:15.both players. Andy, congratulations. Was that tougher than you might have
:13:16. > :13:21.expected? No, I mean. I obviously train with Kyle a lot. I know how
:13:22. > :13:28.good he is. He is a big, strong guy, very powerful game and when he is on
:13:29. > :13:33.he is very tough to play against at practice and I felt it in the match
:13:34. > :13:38.as well today. I expected it to be hard. What were your thoughts at
:13:39. > :13:45.1-1? I was obviously disappointed with the second, I lost serve at
:13:46. > :13:50.40-0 and then had a couple of break back chances just after that and
:13:51. > :13:55.Kyle served extremely well there and I just try to up my intensity and be
:13:56. > :13:59.more aggressive at the beginning of the set and it worked. You fell a
:14:00. > :14:04.couple of times, obviously it was slippery and mildly amusing with the
:14:05. > :14:09.umpire exchange about that. Are you a cause I'm fine, but obviously it's
:14:10. > :14:18.a shock at first. You don't expect it, it comes out of nowhere. And
:14:19. > :14:21.near fine. Ten years ago you plays Tim Henman and we made a point
:14:22. > :14:25.yesterday about the fact you're playing Aljaz Bedene a comedy first
:14:26. > :14:29.time you played a bridge player for ten years. This last Tim Henman ten
:14:30. > :14:33.years ago is the future in a British tennis is in good hands about you he
:14:34. > :14:36.would have said safe hands, what is your impression of the future of
:14:37. > :14:41.British tennis in however many years when you decide to do something
:14:42. > :14:51.else? Obviously Kyle is the future of the game in this country.
:14:52. > :14:56.APPLAUSE It is important to give him time to
:14:57. > :15:01.develop at his all right, not too much pressure is put on him and he's
:15:02. > :15:06.doing great, he's improving every year and has a really good team
:15:07. > :15:11.behind him, they spent a lot of time with him and they working very hard
:15:12. > :15:16.and they are good guys. If he is given time and space just to keep
:15:17. > :15:23.developing and not too much pressure on the results at this stage, then
:15:24. > :15:26.he can go very far. Many congratulations, you the semifinal
:15:27. > :15:30.against Marin Cilic, repeat of the final three years ago, to prepare
:15:31. > :15:38.for. Thank you. Andy Murray, through another semifinal. And we will move
:15:39. > :15:53.over here. A big hand for Kyle Edmund, who played such a fantastic
:15:54. > :15:56.part in that match! And you are hugely professional athlete and will
:15:57. > :16:00.be disappointed by the result but I hope you are proud of how you
:16:01. > :16:06.played? Yes. I'm pleased with the way I played today, as you said. No
:16:07. > :16:10.one likes losing, but you need time to reflect and it's important you
:16:11. > :16:15.take away the positives. It has been a very positive week from me.
:16:16. > :16:19.Obviously unfortunate with the withdrawal yesterday, but I did well
:16:20. > :16:23.to come to my first round and I thought I played well today. Andy
:16:24. > :16:28.showed why he has been so tough to beat and why he has been at the top
:16:29. > :16:32.of the game for so many years, because he always makes it tough
:16:33. > :16:34.when everything matters. One of the big positives for you must be
:16:35. > :16:39.breaking his serve three times. Not many players do that?
:16:40. > :16:42.APPLAUSE They don't. You don't think about
:16:43. > :16:45.that in the match will concentrate on every point and that is what you
:16:46. > :16:53.try to do, you can't find little ways to break him. It is tricky, but
:16:54. > :16:59.especially on grass, if you do break and you will take your opportunities
:17:00. > :17:04.and luckily I thought at 3-1 when I lost my serve I felt I should have
:17:05. > :17:09.held. But as Andy said from 0- 40, that was a game you don't expect to
:17:10. > :17:12.win but you take it and try and serve it out. I asked what he was
:17:13. > :17:19.thinking at one stage, what were you thinking it 1-1? You just try and
:17:20. > :17:24.think, it is a 0-0, you start again from you haven't got a lead or any
:17:25. > :17:31.breaks. It is one set shoot out and ultimately the first two sets go out
:17:32. > :17:35.and go away because it is one set and Andy, I felt, stepped up a bit
:17:36. > :17:40.and maybe I dropped off a bit but I don't think I dropped off a huge
:17:41. > :17:47.amount. Very positive week and for me to play Andy, here's been so good
:17:48. > :17:54.to me. He has lost three preset -- the last three pre-season is I spend
:17:55. > :17:59.with him come gives me an insight into his professional life and it
:18:00. > :18:03.has benefited me. So, it is a bit strange that I had to play him on
:18:04. > :18:07.the mat because I'm so used to playing on the practice court with
:18:08. > :18:11.him. It is a bit weird how you are looking up to someone and they have
:18:12. > :18:16.to almost hear them as your enemy on the court. Andy has been really good
:18:17. > :18:23.to me, so. One final point. APPLAUSE
:18:24. > :18:26.It was a huge occasion today. Everyone who is seasoned watchers
:18:27. > :18:31.say they could not remember a crowd being so engrossed and engaged in a
:18:32. > :18:35.game for ages. What did it feel like for you being here on Centre Court
:18:36. > :18:40.at Greens playing your idol and the second best player in the world. At
:18:41. > :18:45.one point you had him on the ropes? Yes, the entire occasion of it, I've
:18:46. > :18:51.never played on this court until I played on Wednesday and I loved it.
:18:52. > :18:54.Even though I got the withdrawal yesterday, I was disappointed
:18:55. > :18:57.because I could not come on and play, which is what I wanted to do.
:18:58. > :19:04.Luckily I had a great opportunity today, again -- to come on again.
:19:05. > :19:09.The crowd is great, it is great because the crowd was a port every
:19:10. > :19:12.point. Definitely a week I will remember. You're certainly seize the
:19:13. > :19:18.moment and everyone is on your side. And a big wave going forward at
:19:19. > :19:25.Wimbledon. Kyle Edmund. Well done. We said it would be a test of his
:19:26. > :19:30.nerve and his belief against Andy Murray, he has passed that test and
:19:31. > :19:33.a lovely glimpse into the future of British tennis. Kyle Edmund,
:19:34. > :19:37.certainly want to improve but Andy Murray is going through. He was
:19:38. > :19:39.tested, wouldn't have wanted to be out for three sets but was very
:19:40. > :19:43.impressed by the aggression from Kyle Edmund. Andy Murray's
:19:44. > :19:47.experience and great matchplay brought him through the third and
:19:48. > :19:53.final set. He is through to the semifinal, quite a cut from Jimmy
:19:54. > :19:59.Del Gardai. Not much matter from Ivan Lendl but he will be happy he
:20:00. > :20:41.is to the semifinal. Let's whet your appetite for an event not far away.
:20:42. > :20:59.What a great reaction. You simply cannot give more.
:21:00. > :21:13.That was tense. It is over. This is way too good.
:21:14. > :21:21.He has done it! The Queen of the Centre Court. Unbelievable. He will
:21:22. > :21:43.be walking on water. That really has got us in the mood,
:21:44. > :21:47.what a wonderful team I have here in the studio. Peter Fleming and Boris
:21:48. > :21:53.Becker. Seeing you shuffling your feet when the Championships, great
:21:54. > :21:56.memories, Wimbledon, not far away. No, it always brings back great
:21:57. > :22:02.memories. For me is the important tournament of the year as a player
:22:03. > :22:06.and now as a coach. I look forward to it. What about being here? You
:22:07. > :22:09.were honoured at an court as a four-time champion. This is a
:22:10. > :22:14.special tournament for you. Yes, this is the first one I have one as
:22:15. > :22:20.a player, even know I was a teenager. So this will always be the
:22:21. > :22:26.first one. I've played here for many years. I am a member of the club
:22:27. > :22:31.have come here between tournaments. It was a great day to see the other
:22:32. > :22:38.champions. John and Leighton and Roy. It just shows, it is tough to
:22:39. > :22:45.win that many events because it is always such a good field. Yes, it is
:22:46. > :22:49.very short, you don't have many tournaments to play anyway in the
:22:50. > :22:52.grass court season. This is probably the biggest one for women and so
:22:53. > :23:00.everyone must come here, the courts are good and the weather is always a
:23:01. > :23:04.bit shaky. -- the biggest one before Wimbledon. We saw you on court with
:23:05. > :23:09.the great champions and we had a little conversation with one of
:23:10. > :23:15.them. What were are discussing? I wanted to know how it felt being
:23:16. > :23:24.back on the sidelines. John is coaching row which -- Raonic and I
:23:25. > :23:28.wanted to know, what was his impression from the first practice
:23:29. > :23:36.and so forth? We are friends, by now, we meet each other of the court
:23:37. > :23:41.as well. I do want to get some feedback,. How has the tour changed
:23:42. > :23:45.from when you were champion to now, what the players have to go through?
:23:46. > :23:53.What changes are there? I think obviously because of the world of
:23:54. > :23:57.media were living and the internet, players have to be more careful
:23:58. > :24:02.about whatever they do. Speak about John McEnroe of all people. He was
:24:03. > :24:08.one of these, not best behaved players on the court. With Hawk-Eye
:24:09. > :24:12.today, we spoke about that. He wanted Hawk-Eye in his day, I
:24:13. > :24:17.probably would have argued with the computer as well. That is that way
:24:18. > :24:23.what I said! It would have made him really boring. I think mentality
:24:24. > :24:27.wisely champions will always be the champions, they have the same
:24:28. > :24:32.mindset. It has changed a little bit, the rackets has improved, the
:24:33. > :24:37.shoes have improved, the styles have changed. You seem my baseline now,
:24:38. > :24:42.especially in the grass we come in. Having said that, is to have some
:24:43. > :24:46.feel players around and offensive players and question is how do you
:24:47. > :24:50.pick and choose? But the best players have to play well on all
:24:51. > :24:55.surfaces and be able to be comfortable at the net and serving
:24:56. > :25:01.as well. The ultimate question will always be, who is better on grass?
:25:02. > :25:09.McEnroe Federer? Becker Djokovic? No one can answer that. It is
:25:10. > :25:12.impossible. The role of the super cultures, is it more the mental
:25:13. > :25:16.side? We will ask Boris in a moment, but someone who has been there and
:25:17. > :25:21.done it and knows what England's big points? The match-winning points? I
:25:22. > :25:26.think primarily, Boris said it before, the great champions were
:25:27. > :25:30.always rain regardless of the rules -- will always win. Or the
:25:31. > :25:36.conditions. Sin-bin because of the way they approach every day, every
:25:37. > :25:42.ball, every practice. -- especially because. If a great champion can
:25:43. > :25:48.come and show a few insights to a player and help them reach that
:25:49. > :25:55.level of awareness cover version has done his job. With Novak, does he
:25:56. > :26:00.ask a lot of questions or do you speak to him about tactics? What is
:26:01. > :26:05.your relationship? I think, first of all, he listens. That is not the
:26:06. > :26:11.one. I think it is easier if you have won the Grand Slam. It is
:26:12. > :26:16.easier for John Ivan or me to speak to some of these great players
:26:17. > :26:21.because we have also won something. But that we see -- says the
:26:22. > :26:25.different from the other coaches but it comes from a Wimbledon champion
:26:26. > :26:28.to another champion. We speak about strategy, a little bit about how you
:26:29. > :26:33.have to have a certain mentality and mindset in approach to a semifinal
:26:34. > :26:38.or final because honestly in the first round they don't need us. They
:26:39. > :26:42.would play without anyone. Once you get to the second week of a Grand
:26:43. > :26:47.Slam your inner zone. You live another time clock and unless you've
:26:48. > :26:53.been near you would not understand the time clock. Everything focuses
:26:54. > :26:58.on the next match. That is the understanding and the conversations
:26:59. > :27:03.we have. What has changed with him? He has got better and better over
:27:04. > :27:07.the past couple of years. What do you think, how has he moved from two
:27:08. > :27:14.years ago to now? I think it starts and ends with him. He is the
:27:15. > :27:19.director, the owner, the CEO of a company called Dokovic Inc. He
:27:20. > :27:23.brings it out. If you have a player like that, it is much easier to
:27:24. > :27:29.coach because he wants to get better. And then is easy to work
:27:30. > :27:33.with. I think the trouble is when you speak with people who are happy
:27:34. > :27:39.with being 15 in the world or ten in the world. Then you might as well do
:27:40. > :27:43.something else. To give credit where credit is due, he wants to get
:27:44. > :27:47.better and break records and he wants to be better now than he was
:27:48. > :27:51.last year. What does he want to make better? There are many aspects of
:27:52. > :27:56.his game that has improved the last two or three years. I will not give
:27:57. > :28:01.you many details, but he has gotten better and of course, there is still
:28:02. > :28:07.thinks he needs to improve on. It is endless with him. He doesn't want to
:28:08. > :28:11.improve, nobody can make him. The discipline, speak about that and the
:28:12. > :28:20.commitment he does physically and mentally to improve his game? That
:28:21. > :28:25.is for me, always, I don't know him or Andy or Roger or Rafa, how the
:28:26. > :28:31.year after year believe me they are worth it. They have beautiful homes
:28:32. > :28:37.and families but they work more than 99% of the other players. And they
:28:38. > :28:41.don't have to. I admire that mindset. They are role models for
:28:42. > :28:45.everyone else because they would have all the arguments and say I've
:28:46. > :28:51.had enough. I've won this tournament three times, I have some big minute
:28:52. > :28:54.in the back, no, it want to do it even more. When we are looking at
:28:55. > :28:58.the world rankings, Djokovic is so far ahead in the world rankings, he
:28:59. > :29:06.is so dominant. Is there something wrong with that? You're doing your
:29:07. > :29:09.job very well Boris. Well done. But Boris will not say he's made
:29:10. > :29:16.changes, have you seen any difference in Dragovic? I think he
:29:17. > :29:20.has taken the spot to another level of athleticism. He's like a gymnast
:29:21. > :29:24.out there. It weakens like me is the first I've seen to slide into this
:29:25. > :29:29.two-handed backhand with his slide on his left leg so that he hits it
:29:30. > :29:34.with an open stance and can hit the passing shot either way and can get
:29:35. > :29:40.back into record very quickly that everyone else would have to slice
:29:41. > :29:43.backhand in that situation. -- back into the court. Things like that
:29:44. > :29:50.come is much more aggressive of the forehand and for five years ago is
:29:51. > :29:54.he can attack and defend. He is, in my eyes, I've never seen anyone play
:29:55. > :30:00.better tennis than he is playing right now. He's a bit like Bjorn.
:30:01. > :30:05.Way back when, in the early 70s. I remember hearing Don box, the first
:30:06. > :30:08.guy to ever win the grandson, Donna buds sitting behind me watching
:30:09. > :30:13.Bjorn play. He will never make it. Look at how short the ball is going,
:30:14. > :30:17.he will have tennis elbow in three years. Five years, ten years later,
:30:18. > :30:20.everyone plays like him. He rewrote the book. Novak is doing a bit of
:30:21. > :30:31.that. Is that a fair assessment? When we
:30:32. > :30:35.talk about the greats of the game ap probably that includes everybody, I
:30:36. > :30:39.have never seen a player that plays defence better than Novak. Some of
:30:40. > :30:44.the balls he gets, how he puts defence to offence, it's second to
:30:45. > :30:49.none. That's his core. That's how he was raised upon. What he has added
:30:50. > :30:53.is a bit of aggressiveness, a bit of going for the winners. It's a bit of
:30:54. > :30:58.improvement on the serve. A bit of understanding also that if you win
:30:59. > :31:00.the first couple of matches in a Grand Slam quicker, you still have
:31:01. > :31:05.more energy in a semifinal and final. Don't go always to the -
:31:06. > :31:09.sometimes you have no choice but if you can finish quicker, it saves you
:31:10. > :31:16.at the backhand. It's about winning Grand Slams. You can see what it
:31:17. > :31:20.means. He has - what it means to win a Grand Slam event. He has won now
:31:21. > :31:24.on the clay. I am sure that was a huge relief. He was saying he wanted
:31:25. > :31:29.to win that. It must have been immense pressure in the last few
:31:30. > :31:33.days in Paris? Everybody since the day after the Australian Open asks
:31:34. > :31:43.us about it, naturally. What's the next big one? The next big one is
:31:44. > :31:49.Roland Garos. Every press conference it's pretty much what would it mean
:31:50. > :31:52.to win the French Open? Naturally, the pressure and attention was
:31:53. > :31:56.always on Paris. Yet, you have to get there first. You have to play
:31:57. > :32:00.well in February, in March, in April and May, not to get injured, win a
:32:01. > :32:03.couple of tournaments in between and put yourself in a position as you
:32:04. > :32:08.were last year so when the tournament actually started, I said,
:32:09. > :32:13.oh! Half the journey is done, we have survived pretty good, let's get
:32:14. > :32:17.the real party started. You go match by match in round by round then the
:32:18. > :32:21.weather is difficult, the second week it was unfortunate we always
:32:22. > :32:25.had to play catch-up. Those are the rules. We can't change it now. The
:32:26. > :32:29.weather didn't work in his favour. The weather didn't work in his
:32:30. > :32:33.favour, and then the scheduling for the semifinal, they put him on court
:32:34. > :32:38.number one. Again you have to move it around to say it's an advantage,
:32:39. > :32:41.at least you get to play. I remember last year's semifinal he had to play
:32:42. > :32:45.after Stan and finish on the Saturday. They didn't give him an
:32:46. > :32:50.extra day off. You have to take these odds nobody can change and
:32:51. > :32:54.make them to your advantage and he had Saturday free and practice was
:32:55. > :32:59.good and isn'ted r Sunday morning was good and I had a good sentiment
:33:00. > :33:02.that today would be the day. They were talking to you ever since the
:33:03. > :33:06.Australian Open about the French Open and now everyone is going to
:33:07. > :33:11.ask you, including me, the Grand Slam possibly is on now and everyone
:33:12. > :33:15.is talking about it could be achieved. You look in history at how
:33:16. > :33:20.few have achieved the Grand Slam, that's what everyone is talking
:33:21. > :33:24.about. Technically speaking he has won four Majors in a row that you
:33:25. > :33:28.could call a Grand Slam. For the conservatives, and I am one of
:33:29. > :33:35.them... The calendar Grand Slam. You want to win the four in one year. I
:33:36. > :33:41.could tell you 50% we are there, but that's not the approach. The honest
:33:42. > :33:45.approach is to draw before Wimbledon, he at least knows when he
:33:46. > :33:50.starts on the Monday, that's the one advantage. That's it. That's as far
:33:51. > :33:53.as we look. Then hopefully the match goes on and then hopefully the
:33:54. > :33:57.weather, so we really take it match by match and step by step because
:33:58. > :34:00.otherwise you get carried away. You can't possibly win today, if you
:34:01. > :34:06.think about something you want to do tomorrow. How does he prepare?
:34:07. > :34:11.Everyone is different, he has gone the Bjorg way of not playing an
:34:12. > :34:16.event and it's worked, it must be right, what does he do and where
:34:17. > :34:21.does he go? We do what we have done the last couple of years. He's
:34:22. > :34:27.arriving in London at the weekend but has played already in Monte
:34:28. > :34:32.Carlo and back home. Play a couple of exhibitions in the week prior but
:34:33. > :34:38.very intense practice sessions. I think there's no secret to it. You
:34:39. > :34:42.can only get better once you give yourself chances in practice. Then
:34:43. > :34:48.you should come to some of the practices, I have talk to some of
:34:49. > :34:51.the other players, I think the reason he is consistently good over
:34:52. > :34:57.the years has been he puts everything in the practice. There is
:34:58. > :35:04.no practice that is not intense. He gets frustrated when - no, I want
:35:05. > :35:08.to, even win in the practice! That's mentality becomes reality for him.
:35:09. > :35:12.That's why the practice sessions are so important. Everyone loves
:35:13. > :35:17.history. We saw the numbers, the 12 Grand Slams, potentially he has many
:35:18. > :35:25.more in him. Is that something that drives him, do you think? I think it
:35:26. > :35:32.would be a lie to say that he wouldn't watch the history of
:35:33. > :35:38.tennis. He is away Rafa and Sampras won 14 and he is aware he is
:35:39. > :35:42.passing, does he talk about it every day, absolutely not. He is a student
:35:43. > :35:46.of the game. He wants to be part of the all-time greats. Therefore, he
:35:47. > :35:52.knows who won and how many times. He has set the bar, but Murray is
:35:53. > :35:57.moving up, as well. They've almost become the big two now. Yeah, I
:35:58. > :36:02.would never disrespect Rafa and... No. For a number of reasons you are
:36:03. > :36:07.right. They played the last couple of matches against each other. They
:36:08. > :36:13.played actually the last three tournaments they played against each
:36:14. > :36:16.other in the final. They are one and two in the rankings, naturally they
:36:17. > :36:21.follow each other and I think it's good. The game needs rivalries like
:36:22. > :36:25.that. The game needs strong number one and two for everybody else to
:36:26. > :36:30.look up to. And maybe to learn something from it. But the
:36:31. > :36:33.difference is very close, there isn't much, yes you can see the
:36:34. > :36:36.ranking points but the matches themselves, the difference wasn't
:36:37. > :36:40.that big. Do you think Ivan Lendl back in his corner will make a
:36:41. > :36:45.difference? I was surprised, I must say. I thought Jamie and the whole
:36:46. > :36:50.coaching team did an excellent job. I think he has never played better
:36:51. > :36:58.but something must have happened between the final of Roland Garros
:36:59. > :37:04.and beginning of Queens. Ivan knows a thing or two about winning Majors.
:37:05. > :37:08.They have a great history together. He won Majors with his in his
:37:09. > :37:13.corner. He brings something to the team nobody else has. Before this
:37:14. > :37:16.interview I had a nice chat with Ivan and John together and it was
:37:17. > :37:22.nice that the three of us are back in the locker room talking about the
:37:23. > :37:27.past! It's great for the game. Stars like Ivan and John are back in it.
:37:28. > :37:33.It's good for the quality of tennis. Let's face it, we do understand the
:37:34. > :37:39.game, probably better than most and to talk to Andy and Raonic and Novak
:37:40. > :37:45.about it everybody benefits. It's great rivalries, you want that, the
:37:46. > :37:50.great ones. With Boris and Stefan and Pete and Andre and now hopefully
:37:51. > :37:55.we will see many more Andy and Novak? That's the hope. Boris needs
:37:56. > :38:03.to contribute to that, perhaps so that Andy can win a few more times!
:38:04. > :38:06.So tennis wins! His dedication, we talked about what he does on the
:38:07. > :38:11.court, but off the court the training must be immense but the
:38:12. > :38:15.diet, every part of his life is just about being number one. You don't
:38:16. > :38:20.become number one by accident and don't stay there for years, it's a
:38:21. > :38:27.lifestyle. You don't just wake up and say I want to practise,
:38:28. > :38:32.everything that he does it's in regard to his performance on the
:38:33. > :38:36.court. I think his wife understands that, I think his son is part of
:38:37. > :38:42.that. The rest of his family. We are part of it, whatever he does for as
:38:43. > :38:46.long as he wants to play professional tennis is a dedicated
:38:47. > :38:50.to tennis and that's the only way. I don't see it any other possibility
:38:51. > :38:56.that you can become one or two or five if there is many more important
:38:57. > :39:00.things off the court. That goes for the best football players and best
:39:01. > :39:05.basketball players, it's not an easy job. If it was anybody could do it.
:39:06. > :39:10.But it's a well paid job. To do your passion and call it a job is a
:39:11. > :39:17.dream. I think these boys put a lot of time and effort under. He has
:39:18. > :39:19.made changes in his diet. Gluten-free and now vegetarian with
:39:20. > :39:24.a little bit of fish. Do you follow the diet with him? Well, when I
:39:25. > :39:27.first joined him three years ago I was eating pretty much what I wanted
:39:28. > :39:32.to eat but it felt uncomfortable having a big piece of meat and
:39:33. > :39:37.nobody at the table has... So I started to adjust. I lost a couple
:39:38. > :39:42.of pounds. Now I wouldn't say I do the same diet, but I try to eat
:39:43. > :39:47.better and healthier. It's done me good. What about him? Is that
:39:48. > :39:52.because he was getting the ailments that he went gluten-free, what was
:39:53. > :39:56.the reason? He wanted to feel better. He had trouble with his eyes
:39:57. > :40:01.and that seemed to go once he changed his diet. I think we
:40:02. > :40:06.underestimate the food we take in. We are what we eat. I am not going
:40:07. > :40:13.to give you ten minutes of speech now about good foods but a lot
:40:14. > :40:18.reflects on... We have skrus had chocolate here, we have done all
:40:19. > :40:23.right! On the court playing for hours it does show what you have
:40:24. > :40:29.eaten or drunk the night before. Is he superstitious? Not crazy. I think
:40:30. > :40:35.he has a routine. He has his rhythm. I wouldn't call it a superstition.
:40:36. > :40:39.It's wonderful listening to the insight and how the game has changed
:40:40. > :40:43.over the years. Before it was on practice and on court. Now you have
:40:44. > :40:50.to do everything. The diet, the training. The flexibility. It's
:40:51. > :40:55.become more physical. Because, let's face it, every sport over the years,
:40:56. > :40:59.over decades, improves. The sprinters will be faster than 30
:41:00. > :41:08.years ago, the same with tennis players. These guys are seeking out
:41:09. > :41:14.every little edge. What they know about their performance that just
:41:15. > :41:19.went right over my head and other people of my generation's head is
:41:20. > :41:23.incredible. They are really experts in just about everything. We talked
:41:24. > :41:28.about it already, the mental side of it, you look at players in the top
:41:29. > :41:33.100 they all strike the ball so well. The difference between them,
:41:34. > :41:36.well, you answer it! If it would be just hitting the ball, you would
:41:37. > :41:39.have 1,000 number ones. In the qualifying sometimes I am amazed how
:41:40. > :41:44.quickly these guys play. You put them in front of 1,000 people, they
:41:45. > :41:51.don't know what their name is any more. You know, at a certain level,
:41:52. > :41:57.once you get to the top 100 it's added to the mentality, 75, 80% and
:41:58. > :42:01.then a bit of fitness and this but it's so much what you are willing to
:42:02. > :42:05.do, what is your sacrifice in order to win. You know him so well. If I
:42:06. > :42:10.was going to ask what's the one thing and the most important thing
:42:11. > :42:14.that makes him better than the others what would it be? I think he
:42:15. > :42:18.wants it more, deep down, the heritage he is from. The family
:42:19. > :42:27.background. He suffered a lot. He went through hell and back when he
:42:28. > :42:30.was ten, 12, 14 and I think when the core comes out in a Wimbledon final,
:42:31. > :42:34.he goes further every time. Brilliant. It's been lovely talking
:42:35. > :42:37.to you, Boris. Thank you very much for coming up and good luck over the
:42:38. > :42:43.next few weeks. You are going to be busy. Peter, thank you very much.
:42:44. > :42:49.Going from Boris, we will go to John McEnroe's charges on court at the
:42:50. > :42:53.moment, Milos Raonic and there he is, the big serving Canadian and
:42:54. > :42:59.John has been trying to get him to attack more. We will see whether it
:43:00. > :43:05.happens in this match. He is playing Roberto Bautista-Agut. It's 3-0 up.
:43:06. > :43:14.Let's join our comentators John Lloyd and Andrew Kroter. -- Cotter.
:43:15. > :43:21.Great listening to Boris there. A good start by Raonic, breaking
:43:22. > :43:26.Bautista in the last service game. Raonic had a Rocky start, as well in
:43:27. > :43:31.his first service game. He came through.
:43:32. > :43:52.Everyone is just about in their seats now.
:43:53. > :44:02.Nicely done. Bautista, who is already in action today, was
:44:03. > :44:06.completing his second round match against Donald Young, wrapping it up
:44:07. > :44:07.in the second set very quickly and played one set yesterday and one
:44:08. > :45:34.this morning. Beautifully finished off by Roberto
:45:35. > :45:39.Bautista. He has joined the match, Bautista.
:45:40. > :45:42.He was a little bit out of sorts at the beginning there. Played a poor
:45:43. > :45:48.game to lose his serve. Looked a little bit flat. Maybe playing a
:45:49. > :45:53.second match, hasn't got fired up yet, but unfortunately with when you
:45:54. > :45:58.lose an early break to Milos Raonic you can almost certainly have lost
:45:59. > :46:05.the first set, or a set, it's not 100%, but it's right up there. He
:46:06. > :46:19.has not been broken in these Championships yet.
:46:20. > :46:25.It's something that Sue mentioned that he has said, Raonic, what he is
:46:26. > :46:31.looking for and what McEnroe wants him to do is to be more aggressive
:46:32. > :46:54.earlier in points, make his presence felt and impose himself.
:46:55. > :47:00.Not sure if he meant that. Shuffled it over. We will give him the
:47:01. > :47:06.benefit of the doubt and say it was an exceptional shot. Don't think he
:47:07. > :47:19.meant that to be the angle, that extreme.
:47:20. > :47:31.That's the big weapon right there, that forehand of his. He gets good
:47:32. > :47:36.pace off it. That doesn't look healthy. There is little drizzle
:47:37. > :47:50.forecast but it's not meant to last too long.
:47:51. > :47:58.Backs up that break of serve. He is keen to extend his partnership with
:47:59. > :48:05.McEnroe beyond the end of Wimbledon and the grass court season but he
:48:06. > :48:10.knows that McEnroe is a busy man and has other commitments and that's the
:48:11. > :48:14.problem with these super court chasers, they are busy and have
:48:15. > :48:20.limited time. They can't be a coach with you for the whole season, week
:48:21. > :48:23.in, week out. No, I was talking about John Mac today about Raonic
:48:24. > :48:29.and he was saying that he is enjoying it but it's more of a
:48:30. > :48:35.mental side, rather than actual technique of hitting the ball. It's
:48:36. > :48:42.just about what he needs to do. About being more aggressive. A few
:48:43. > :48:52.spots of rain on our commentary box window and Raonic is perhaps using
:48:53. > :48:59.the word drizzle in there somewhere. Fergus Murphy studying the skies
:49:00. > :49:04.with the rest of us. Definitely comes from up there! They
:49:05. > :49:09.can play through a bit of drizzle as we stressed before, it just is
:49:10. > :49:15.holding the players at the moment, I think. Certainly a few brollies are
:49:16. > :49:23.sprouting. The head groundsman doesn't look too bored.
:49:24. > :49:34.It's getting heavier now. Stand by your beds!
:49:35. > :49:43.We have been fortunate to get as much tennis as we have without any
:49:44. > :49:48.interruptions with the forecast. You want these quarter-finals to get
:49:49. > :49:51.through so the tournament can get back to being on schedule. UMPIRE:
:49:52. > :49:55.Ladies and gentlemen, play is suspended. There we are the words we
:49:56. > :49:58.have heard many times over the years here and at Wimbledon. We are
:49:59. > :50:01.rattling through the matches. We are perhaps making more progress today
:50:02. > :50:08.than we thought. I am sure we will again after this shower. It's not
:50:09. > :50:12.supposed to last too long. Mac is a man on a mission. The nets coming
:50:13. > :50:16.down. The players are staying out there
:50:17. > :50:22.just now. Maybe being kept in a holding pattern.
:50:23. > :50:30.The covers are coming on. The players are off. He is staying out
:50:31. > :50:34.there. Raonic is leaving. The umpire is leaving. It might just
:50:35. > :50:39.be Bautista on the court on his own in a few minutes. He is a break
:50:40. > :50:43.down. Might be of benefit for him to go
:50:44. > :50:46.off because he started off slowly in this match and didn't look like he
:50:47. > :50:52.was a part of it until he held that one service game. Until then he
:50:53. > :50:56.looked out of sorts. Maybe he will go into the locker room and get
:50:57. > :51:00.reenergised and fired up a little bit more. What do you do? You think
:51:01. > :51:06.this is not going to be a long delay so what do you do? Go to the lounge
:51:07. > :51:09.or the locker room and keep loose? It depends, they'll be told right
:51:10. > :51:14.away about how long they're expected. If it's over a certain
:51:15. > :51:17.time they'll go in the locker room at the start, maybe change shirts
:51:18. > :51:21.and have their coach with them and talk about what's happened at the
:51:22. > :51:26.start and have a drink or whatever and not a hard drink, obviously! And
:51:27. > :51:30.then just depends, then you have to judge how long it's going to be,
:51:31. > :51:35.whether you get food again, all that kind of stuff comes into it. At the
:51:36. > :51:39.beginning it will be just going in there and listening to the coach a
:51:40. > :51:42.little bit and refocussing. Raonic obviously didn't want to come off
:51:43. > :51:46.court. He doesn't want it to be raining, obviously, but he was in a
:51:47. > :51:52.good position there and was playing well. Momentum was with him. We have
:51:53. > :51:58.two quarter-finals remaining. This one with Bautista and Raonic. Then
:51:59. > :52:02.Muller from Luxembourg and Tomic, the Australian, that's supposed to
:52:03. > :52:06.be the last match up. They may move that. I am still optimistic they'll
:52:07. > :52:12.get to play. It's raining more heavily now. We will leave you and
:52:13. > :52:17.return when the players return with Raonic a break up on Bautista-Agut.
:52:18. > :52:21.Thank you very much, Andrew. Looking at the weather that's coming when
:52:22. > :52:25.this big cloud does finally go over us there will be some more play
:52:26. > :52:28.today. Hopefully more live tennis to come
:52:29. > :52:34.particularly here on BBC Two before we head off to the red button.
:52:35. > :52:38.Andrew has joined Peter and I here. The happiest person probably in the
:52:39. > :52:43.locker room right now is Andy Murray seeing this rain. He has got the job
:52:44. > :52:48.done before the rain. That's. What a first 15 minutes of the deciding
:52:49. > :52:52.set. You can't just decide to hit fourth or fifth gear but he knows
:52:53. > :53:02.how to do it because he is vastly experienced. He stamped his
:53:03. > :53:08.authority on the match. It was a - he got through it. Kyle did very
:53:09. > :53:15.well. When Andy elevates, it's like a hovercraft taking off. He is very
:53:16. > :53:17.hard to play up the pace, made lesserers and showed Kyle where he
:53:18. > :53:23.is still. Interesting match for a lot of reasons. Murray had his
:53:24. > :53:28.moments. Some brilliant points that just made the difference. How many
:53:29. > :53:34.times have we seen Andy Murray hitting passing shots, forehand down
:53:35. > :53:40.the line, cross-court. Puts so many returns into play. Oh!
:53:41. > :53:45.He got the break of serve with that one. We should have shown that to
:53:46. > :53:50.Boris, he would have been proud of that. He would have been more in the
:53:51. > :53:57.air. 17 you can do that, 29 maybe not. Great effort from Murray. Kyle
:53:58. > :54:01.did well on the attack and starts eking off on the forehand. That was
:54:02. > :54:05.from the deciding set, I believe. This is where Andy stamps his
:54:06. > :54:09.authority. It's about a willpower and presence. 29-year-old against a
:54:10. > :54:14.21-year-old, there is a Gulf in terms of the authority they bring to
:54:15. > :54:21.the court. Perfect litmus test for where Kyle is in the game. He is
:54:22. > :54:27.going places, for sure. He had his moments too. Big forehand. Huge
:54:28. > :54:35.forehand. It's world-class, his forehand. His backhand has improved
:54:36. > :54:41.immensely. The further improvement in Kyle, and the first serve was
:54:42. > :54:48.quite good, maybe not as effective as it could be. He is a big guy. The
:54:49. > :54:53.improvement in Kyle, here is him attacking.
:54:54. > :54:57.So many good things in the attacking side of the game. He wasn't afraid
:54:58. > :55:02.to have a go. He knew he had to have a go. He had to attack Murray. This
:55:03. > :55:06.is exactly the time in his career, 21 years of age, when he has to take
:55:07. > :55:11.it on and square up to these guys and say I am ready for it. That's
:55:12. > :55:16.what he is doing. His progress, if you look at it, is steady. He's come
:55:17. > :55:23.through the challengers and won a lot of them. That forehand, at this
:55:24. > :55:25.level the margins are more slight. You have to be better but he is
:55:26. > :55:32.making improvements and doing the work. He has so many people in his
:55:33. > :55:35.camp now that take care of every single bit of his existence but he
:55:36. > :55:40.is the one who has to do the work and he is not afraid of that. He is
:55:41. > :55:45.a big strong lad. Much bigger in real life than he looks on the
:55:46. > :55:47.tennis court. He enjoyed the big occasion, to produce your best on
:55:48. > :55:52.the stage like this against one of the world's best. He did enjoy it.
:55:53. > :55:59.It was telling at the start of the third set as and drew was saying
:56:00. > :56:05.when Andy raised it up a gear, Kyle kind of shrunk a little bit and
:56:06. > :56:09.couldn't match him. Not many can. Interesting, our conversation with
:56:10. > :56:16.Boris earlier, when he said I believe that Djokovic wants it more
:56:17. > :56:23.than anyone else. I think there is also an intangible there that people
:56:24. > :56:29.don't quite realise and I remember when Boris first played his first
:56:30. > :56:34.Wimbledon final, aged 17. The moment is indelible in my mind, when
:56:35. > :56:38.someone threw him the ball and he played keepy-uppy with it on the
:56:39. > :56:43.Centre Court. 17 years old, are you kidding me! It was like his living
:56:44. > :56:48.room. This is me, this is where I live! That's what the great
:56:49. > :56:53.champions have. They have this self-belief, this feeling of
:56:54. > :56:59.belonging, of what's the big deal? Wimbledon final, so what? And that's
:57:00. > :57:03.where players like Kyle have to somehow manage to bridge that gap.
:57:04. > :57:07.Off camera I asked Boris what he thought of Kyle Edmund and he said
:57:08. > :57:13.he has to change the serve. You agree? Well, his serve is quite
:57:14. > :57:19.good. It's a powerful serve. There is something in the action that robs
:57:20. > :57:24.him of a bit of power. I don't think it's as accurate as it will be, as
:57:25. > :57:27.it needs to be, because that's interesting when we used to serve
:57:28. > :57:32.and volley you knew you had to hit the lines or hit close to the lines,
:57:33. > :57:37.because then if you didn't you would be in trouble. Now because everyone
:57:38. > :57:45.stays back they don't necessarily hit the lines as often. Because they
:57:46. > :57:51.hit a big serve and stand back and hit huge forehands and yet if you
:57:52. > :57:57.are going to be a great, the - one of the reasons Djokovic has improved
:57:58. > :58:02.so much is his first serve, it's so accurate and powerful enough he wins
:58:03. > :58:06.a lot of free points. Kyle's not going to be a great. I don't see him
:58:07. > :58:09.as a Grand Slam winner. He can certainly make himself a part of the
:58:10. > :58:15.argument into round three, four, maybe a quarter-final. Let me ask
:58:16. > :58:21.you something. What did you think Ferrer would be, the first four,
:58:22. > :58:25.five years he came on tour? Ranked 40, 50, 60. He was always going to
:58:26. > :58:29.be a journeyman player and suddenly, oh! How good is he? I know.
:58:30. > :58:33.Absolutely. Good point. Because it's raining we are going to come off air
:58:34. > :58:37.for a while here on BBC Two. We will be back later, hopefully, to bring
:58:38. > :58:40.you some more live tennis. It is looking brighter over there. We will
:58:41. > :58:45.bring you an update in about half an hour's time. The headlines here
:58:46. > :58:49.today, we have been talking about Andy Murray, he went through against
:58:50. > :58:55.Britain's 21-year-old Kyle Edmund in three sets. He will be on court
:58:56. > :58:57.tomorrow in the semifinals to face former champion Marin Cilic. That's
:58:58. > :59:01.tomorrow. Hopefully we will have more tennis for you later this
:59:02. > :59:02.evening. If so, do join us. We will be back in about half
