:00:37. > :00:46.Andy Murray in action, going for number five title at Queen's. Andy
:00:47. > :00:54.Murray, the world number two against Nicolas Mahut, quite an intriguing
:00:55. > :00:57.contest. What a swerve on that serve, evidence of how dangerous
:00:58. > :01:05.this is for Andy Murray. Break point.
:01:06. > :01:29.Oh, yes, that is in. Oh, boy, set point.
:01:30. > :01:35.First set to Andy Murray, excellent match.
:01:36. > :01:58.A magnificent game. Mahut breaks first.
:01:59. > :02:08.Fantastic first round match from both players. The four time champion
:02:09. > :02:15.has opened his account with a wonderful performance here.
:02:16. > :02:24.SUE BARKER: the drive for a record five titles is still on for Andy
:02:25. > :02:29.Murray as he came through a tough opener yesterday, saving set points
:02:30. > :02:34.in both sets, the perfect welcome back gift for coach Ivan Lendl. The
:02:35. > :02:39.weather is the perfect gift for fans arriving today. It is not that warm
:02:40. > :02:43.but at least it is dry. Welcome to the Aegon Championships. It is a
:02:44. > :02:49.drier day-to-day but some showers are forecast later in the day. I
:02:50. > :02:53.spoke to tournament director who say they are only three and a half
:02:54. > :02:56.matches behind schedule. Another wonderful schedule on today but it
:02:57. > :03:00.does not feature Andy Murray, who has a day off and he will be back
:03:01. > :03:05.tomorrow when the British number one will face the British number two.
:03:06. > :03:10.And Aljaz Bedene is out on court late last night where he put out
:03:11. > :03:15.Benoit Paire of France, a player ranked 30 for places above him. A
:03:16. > :03:21.wonderful battle out in the twilight. He had a wonderful French
:03:22. > :03:25.Open, getting through to the third-round where he lost to Novak
:03:26. > :03:26.Djokovic but he booked himself a place on Centre Court to face Andy
:03:27. > :04:05.Murray. Dan Evans is battling on Court
:04:06. > :04:09.Number One against Paul-Henri Mathieu. He has had a number of set
:04:10. > :04:18.points in that tie-break and he has taken it 10-8, Paul-Henri Mathieu
:04:19. > :04:22.has taken that. Steve Johnson defeated Richard Gasquet and he
:04:23. > :04:25.takes on Adrian Mannarino. We will join a match between Kyle Edmund and
:04:26. > :04:31.Gilles Simon and this was a short time ago.
:04:32. > :04:40.This could be a huge upset and he looks supremely confident during the
:04:41. > :04:44.first set. He broke serve twice and broke Simon's served in the first
:04:45. > :04:48.game of the second set but then had his broken. Are we in for another
:04:49. > :04:53.British victory on Centre Court? Let's find out and join our
:04:54. > :05:04.commentators, John Lloyd and Andrew Castells.
:05:05. > :05:19.COMMENTATOR: he is a resilient competitor.
:05:20. > :05:39.He was a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon last year.
:05:40. > :05:44.Simon has bounced his racket several times during the course of this
:05:45. > :05:48.match. It is almost like he has to decide whether he wants to be part
:05:49. > :05:54.of this thing or not. Devilish competitor. He has looked in this
:05:55. > :05:57.first set at times, he was wandering around muttering and he looked like
:05:58. > :06:02.he would rather be anywhere else. But he has done that before
:06:03. > :06:06.anti-comes back. Fortunately for Kyle Edmund, he had that break in
:06:07. > :06:11.the second set. He had a couple of chances to go up couple-mac- zero
:06:12. > :06:20.and plays a couple of loose errors and a couple of deuces where he had
:06:21. > :06:24.shots that weren't really on. He is sort of winning ugly, Simon, to get
:06:25. > :06:30.back in this match at the moment. Evans very impressive, and a lot of
:06:31. > :06:33.errors from Simon, you keep thinking he will tighten up his game at some
:06:34. > :06:42.point and get a lot more balls in play. His coaches loving it. He has
:06:43. > :06:48.been getting stick from Gilles Simon for quite a bit of the match. But he
:06:49. > :06:53.has a good sense of humour about it. He always looks a bit dishevelled,
:06:54. > :07:00.Simon, he was has this careworn, threadbare look about him. He does!
:07:01. > :07:10.He has decided to give the rays are a break this year. 31 years of age.
:07:11. > :07:13.Number 18 in the world, perennially, there or thereabouts. He hits the
:07:14. > :07:19.ball in the right place, it is a much heavier ball than you think. He
:07:20. > :07:25.is a man who looks to Michael Channing as his inspiration when he
:07:26. > :07:29.was growing up. Chang showed me you don't have to be tall to be a great
:07:30. > :07:43.player. You have to maximise what you have got.
:07:44. > :07:52.Kyle Edmund back on serve now. 21 years old. He comes from Beverley in
:07:53. > :07:57.the east riding of Yorkshire. Number 80 to what is highest, got into the
:07:58. > :08:01.top hundred last year playing a challenger in California and won
:08:02. > :08:16.semifinal there. That was a big milestone. The progress is steady.
:08:17. > :08:26.He is known for that big, whipping forehand. He has had one today at 97
:08:27. > :08:30.mph and that is a big weapon. His serve can be pretty dangerous as
:08:31. > :08:34.well and his backhand is impressive today also. Goes from deep into the
:08:35. > :09:15.baseline. It is not easy. That is an excellent hold off the
:09:16. > :09:20.disappointment of losing that break. He has got back into this game. That
:09:21. > :09:42.was one of his better holes for a while. Looked very confident.
:09:43. > :09:56.He won three challengers last year, this has been a progression. He is
:09:57. > :10:02.out of the challenger is now, on the cusp of getting out of that
:10:03. > :10:19.second-tier. He won three challengers last year in Hong Kong.
:10:20. > :10:23.New York also and when says -- Buenos Aires. And those challenges
:10:24. > :10:32.are not easy to win. This year, he won challenger titles in Dallas and
:10:33. > :10:37.Rome also. Also runner-up in Maui. That is my sort of challenger. Do
:10:38. > :10:45.they have anything in the Maldives? LAUGHTER
:10:46. > :10:58.That is the back and I was talking about. It is better. Taking
:10:59. > :11:02.advantage of the Simon second set in the first set and running with the
:11:03. > :11:06.big forehand to it, it is a good tactic, get his opponent off balance
:11:07. > :11:35.right from the start. Let's see if he does it here.
:11:36. > :11:46.This is the ATP Tour tournament of the year at this level, and ATP
:11:47. > :11:51.World Tour 500 tournament. 30 to draw this year which we are thankful
:11:52. > :11:52.for because it has come down in size from 56. Celeste matches in a 30 to
:11:53. > :12:11.draw. Bos so less matches. Look at that selection, Roger Taylor
:12:12. > :12:21.on the left-hand side. Three times semifinalist. Wonderful player. We
:12:22. > :12:27.can see John Barrett, Mark Cox, and Jones.
:12:28. > :12:37.It is a British day in the... What you call that box? The upmarket box?
:12:38. > :12:42.It is the President's sweet. I have made it up but I have a recollection
:12:43. > :12:51.it might be called that. It is the best ticket, that is for sure. Mark
:12:52. > :12:55.Cox, that slice account he had on this surface, that didn't get up
:12:56. > :13:10.very high. Roger Taylor wasn't bad either. Angela Mortimer and Anne
:13:11. > :13:20.Jones, doesn't get much better than that.
:13:21. > :13:23.Anne Jones, a world table tennis champion as well, amazing. Fred
:13:24. > :13:46.Perry was as well. That is one of the better returns we
:13:47. > :13:49.have seen from the Frenchman today. He has not been striking the ball as
:13:50. > :13:54.well as he would have liked Andy has been a bit hesitant but that one, he
:13:55. > :14:02.leaned into it. He got the second serve and Kyle Edmund needs a bit of
:14:03. > :14:16.big serves now. It is looking like a dangerous game.
:14:17. > :14:24.A bit casual there, did not bend low enough. He doesn't have a lot of the
:14:25. > :14:28.little stuff yet. He has a lot of the big kit like this serve,
:14:29. > :14:34.forehand, but the stuffy doesn't have, you can work on quite easily.
:14:35. > :14:40.I don't know if you will ever have good touch but that stuff at the
:14:41. > :14:47.back of the court, that can definitely come. That was a poor
:14:48. > :14:54.game. He was set and a break up and now is for- two down. -- 4- two
:14:55. > :15:05.down. He looks a little miserable but he
:15:06. > :15:09.has got the break back and he has not really started playing well yet.
:15:10. > :15:15.He does that, he you is you in into a trap and you think he doesn't want
:15:16. > :15:20.to be out there but then all of a sudden, winners start going past.
:15:21. > :15:28.His poor coach! He doesn't know what is going on!
:15:29. > :15:36.Leon Smith, the British Davis Cup captain expressed surprise last
:15:37. > :15:42.year, observing what happened last year in the Davis Cup quarterfinal.
:15:43. > :15:48.Gilles Simon was picked ahead of Richard Gasquet to play Andy Murray.
:15:49. > :15:53.Simon can make you play an awful lot worse than you should. He is a very
:15:54. > :16:04.difficult fellow to play. That was a bit unlucky. Leon Smith
:16:05. > :16:09.is pulling double duty today. He watched the first one and then he
:16:10. > :16:12.has probably nipped off to see Dan Evans on the other court because
:16:13. > :16:18.there are a few players coming into this reckoning for the Davis Cup
:16:19. > :16:20.match. There are some openings, depending on whether Andy Murray
:16:21. > :16:47.will play. Hopefully he will. The first hour of this match, it was
:16:48. > :16:55.a lot better for Kyle Edmund than the second hour. We were over on the
:16:56. > :16:58.red button with the first hour, it was good. As soon as we come over to
:16:59. > :17:29.BBC Two... Really, this is not good, the last
:17:30. > :17:35.few minutes, too many errors from Edmund. That game when he was 1-0
:17:36. > :17:40.up, he had the momentum and he shouldn't make mistakes. Exactly,
:17:41. > :17:45.this is a learning curve for him because the top-level very rarely,
:17:46. > :17:50.do they play those sort of bunches of games where they play badly. They
:17:51. > :17:55.may play a couple of points here and there but they get back and play
:17:56. > :18:01.solidly. Kyle Edmund, that has been a group of about 15 minutes where
:18:02. > :18:04.game went from extremely well to dropping to really poorly and you
:18:05. > :18:13.cannot do that at this level. But he has played... That is Jones on the
:18:14. > :18:20.right who looks after him, he is the son of Aled Jones. He has played a
:18:21. > :18:26.fair amount of tall level tennis now, got his first ATP thousand
:18:27. > :18:30.Masters in Miami. Then he shared the court would never Djokovic and did
:18:31. > :18:33.not disgrace himself at all. He reached the second round of Roland
:18:34. > :18:39.Garros as well. He is putting it in the bank. He is not a rookie but he
:18:40. > :18:44.is still a long way off in terms of experience, a long way down. He has
:18:45. > :18:49.to play challengers but now you are with the big guys, week in, week
:18:50. > :18:53.out. You cannot afford big dips in your form during a match. You cannot
:18:54. > :19:19.get away with it at this level like you can in challengers.
:19:20. > :20:43.That is certainly what we were seeing in the first set. Forehand of
:20:44. > :20:47.Kyle Edmund was really taking over a lot of the rallies but it has gone
:20:48. > :20:52.off the boil a bit but that was much better. The one thing about playing
:20:53. > :20:55.Gilles Simon, you always feel you have a chance against his service
:20:56. > :21:08.games, he doesn't generally serves many aces.
:21:09. > :21:18.Take that at the start of the game. Simon hit a filthy little forehand
:21:19. > :21:21.down the line, and that is pure luck. Love it. From a British point
:21:22. > :22:08.of view, of course. You are joking. That was a huge
:22:09. > :22:18.point. That has caused a bit of a murmur. This one, he could... He
:22:19. > :22:19.will make that 99 times out of 100. Someone to run the other side of the
:22:20. > :22:38.court. Calmly done after the disappointment
:22:39. > :23:55.of the previous point. That has been called good by the
:23:56. > :24:00.lines person and I tell you what, they have had a change of crew here
:24:01. > :24:05.and the first crew had one of those sessions... Perhaps it was time for
:24:06. > :24:10.lunch but they missed several calls. And this call is spot on. Sharp as a
:24:11. > :24:18.tack. UMPIRE: Mr Simon with one challenge
:24:19. > :25:03.remaining. And that is the way he has turned it
:25:04. > :25:19.round. He is a wily old bird, Gilles Simon,
:25:20. > :25:24.he absolutely look out of it. But not a bit of it. 12 career titles
:25:25. > :25:29.and a high of world number six, you just don't go away. A wonderful
:25:30. > :25:38.Davis Cup record as well. He gave Murray everything we all expected in
:25:39. > :25:41.a four set match here last year. He is a really tough guy to get through
:25:42. > :25:46.and it looks like he is doing virtually nothing. He does. He soaks
:25:47. > :25:51.it all up. Have a quick look at this. Where they are hitting the
:25:52. > :25:55.ball, the rally hit point comparison. Kyle Edmund is inside
:25:56. > :26:03.the baseline trying to make it happen. He does not want to be
:26:04. > :26:08.defending. Contrast that with ill Simon who against anybody, have this
:26:09. > :26:14.exact pattern. One in ten balls will hit inside, he is not interested in
:26:15. > :26:19.that, what is interesting is hanging around the baseline or hitting the
:26:20. > :26:22.ball from way back at making it difficult for an opponent and then
:26:23. > :26:27.accelerating. He is a wonderful player to watch. He feeds off
:26:28. > :26:32.people's pace. He has got that very good timing on the ball and short
:26:33. > :26:39.swings and he can't throw that right back at you. He moves well. He is an
:26:40. > :26:45.orthodox, nasty to play against. Andy Murray has always said he is a
:26:46. > :26:49.tough opponent. He is just awkward, sometimes you look when he wanders
:26:50. > :26:54.around and his second serve looked so poor and you think, how can he be
:26:55. > :26:59.ranked this high? Because he is nasty to play against and doesn't
:27:00. > :27:02.look good on the court but he is. We just lost the great sportsman, the
:27:03. > :28:45.great ambassador, Muhammad Ali. The weather is looking good for now,
:28:46. > :28:49.temperature 18 or 19 Celsius today. A bit of a gust of wind suggesting
:28:50. > :28:56.worse weather to come possibly, we hope not. Supposed to be about ten
:28:57. > :29:01.or 11 mph, it feels firmer than that from the south west. Some fairly
:29:02. > :29:11.sizeable showers later. It feels a bit more autumnal than
:29:12. > :29:25.summary. LAUGHTER
:29:26. > :29:31.That sort of typical Simon point, he just seemed so casual, it looks like
:29:32. > :29:36.it was definitely Kyle Edmund's point and he just rolls over. What
:29:37. > :29:52.sort of technique was that? But he wins the point.
:29:53. > :30:02.Just wide, he might have a look at that. UMPIRE: Mr Simon challenging a
:30:03. > :30:11.call. Right underneath the linesman's knows. He didn't feel he
:30:12. > :30:22.could overrule the linesman. Did it just slipped wide? Yes, it did.
:30:23. > :30:38.This is a good start from Kyle Eastmond. -- Edmund. Needs to more
:30:39. > :30:48.on the sign second serve. Impose yourself a bit. Simon, to me, miss
:30:49. > :30:57.hitting, hitting a lot of shortfalls. This match is winnable.
:30:58. > :30:58.Simon nowhere near his best. A chance for a nice gal for Kyle
:30:59. > :32:18.Edmund. It is a one set shooter now. They will be looking forward to the
:32:19. > :32:25.next match, Milos Raonic, against Nick Kyrgios. One set all. John
:32:26. > :32:38.McEnroe will be here. Coaching Milos Raonic. Kyrgios, another
:32:39. > :32:43.21-year-old, like Kyle here. That is the forehand, what you want to see
:32:44. > :32:52.on the second serve. Get around it. Just sitting there. Gets around,
:32:53. > :32:56.setting up. Then he can hit the big forehand. That second serve is so
:32:57. > :33:15.vulnerable. Those areas, in the corners,
:33:16. > :33:21.defending, absolutely need to be worked on. Already topped 100, going
:33:22. > :33:29.up nicely through the ranks, some people think he can be top 30, but
:33:30. > :33:35.not without and hands at the moment. That is the end of that opportunity.
:33:36. > :33:40.It was that pushy forehand. Not a bad bounce, but even if it was, you
:33:41. > :33:47.have to adjust. Things to work on. If he does, can look ahead to a
:33:48. > :33:49.fruitful career at this level. Quite difficult to soft and hands. Not
:33:50. > :34:51.easy. -- Yes, come on. Here we go. Simon is
:34:52. > :34:56.where you want him, terribly irritated, wonderful anticipation,
:34:57. > :35:08.that is a point Kyle Edmund should have one. Exactly. Danger here, 0-
:35:09. > :35:13.30. That is away, see how quickly it happens against the serve,
:35:14. > :35:19.world-class player. This is obviously what he has to work on.
:35:20. > :35:25.Top-class players very rarely play three bed weights in a row. Just
:35:26. > :35:59.does not happen. -- play three bad points in a row.
:36:00. > :36:16.Father and son, nothing after these courts for millennia. -- looking
:36:17. > :36:33.after. What a great job they have done. Great Court.
:36:34. > :36:38.This would be issued for use for Kyle Edmund, if he can somehow get
:36:39. > :37:40.himself out of this game from 0- 40. Putting in a next step to the
:37:41. > :37:54.volley, not just reaching a hand-out to it.
:37:55. > :38:05.Good effort. Really good effort. Well done. Critic uncivil coming
:38:06. > :38:09.forward on big forehand. That is five straight points for Kyle
:38:10. > :38:14.Edmund. The man drafted into the British Davis Cup number two
:38:15. > :38:20.position for the final last year against Belgium in front of a huge
:38:21. > :38:24.crowd. Davis Cup final one of the big occasions in our sport.
:38:25. > :38:29.Acquitted himself very well winning the first two sets against David
:38:30. > :38:32.Goffin, before running out of energy. Others have made their debut
:38:33. > :39:02.in the Davis Cup final. The Frenchman losing after being two
:39:03. > :39:12.sets up, I thought he would never play again. Brent
:39:13. > :39:23.-- we have some rain coming, unfortunately. We had an hour, 30 of
:39:24. > :39:31.action. So much more to look forward to. Get that net down, fixed out
:39:32. > :39:36.later on. They did that yesterday, missing a torrential downpour.
:39:37. > :39:40.Getting the covers on just-in-time. Would have taken another hour to
:39:41. > :39:44.drive the court. It is coming from the south and South West will stop
:39:45. > :39:50.getting rid of all the equipment. Throwing it anywhere. They cost a
:39:51. > :39:59.lot of money, Graham! We will build him for it if it breaks. They don't
:40:00. > :40:07.want to be caught. -- we will bill him. Don't want any water to get
:40:08. > :40:23.under the covers, like yesterday. They are ready, as and when.
:40:24. > :40:33.He normally times it right. His old man is in the corner, saying I would
:40:34. > :40:42.not have gone on. Of course not, you mess that up. Dave is in the corner.
:40:43. > :40:52.I trained him as best I could, sorry! Dave is retired. He spends a
:40:53. > :40:55.bit of time down in the West Country, a couple of vintage
:40:56. > :41:08.motorcycles. One of them, a classic, he said, I had never heard of it. A
:41:09. > :41:13.staff of 25 on the site of Queen's Club during the tournament, a bit
:41:14. > :41:18.less at other times. Grass is a ridiculous surface will stop in the
:41:19. > :41:23.old days, you were on record, John is saying the All-England Club
:41:24. > :41:31.itself should not be played on grass, so. And difficult to maintain
:41:32. > :41:36.for such a small amount of time. Remember, the grass was different in
:41:37. > :41:43.those days. I am giving myself a bit of a break. Not mean walking
:41:44. > :41:48.backwards? The grass in the old days, it was lower bouncing, we had
:41:49. > :41:53.those fast serving players, no rallies. In comparison with now, not
:41:54. > :41:59.even in the same league. Now it is like hard court. You can still only
:42:00. > :42:03.play on them for a few months. It is a luxury surface. So many clubs
:42:04. > :42:07.getting rid of it, it does not make sense stop it is fun to play on

:42:39. > :42:54.He has some very interesting stories. The order of play for later
:42:55. > :42:59.on, impressive. We have Murray and Stanislas Wawrinka. After this
:43:00. > :43:07.match, Milos Raonic against Nick Kyrgios. I was sitting courtside for
:43:08. > :43:10.the first six, eight games, you cannot believe how hard they were
:43:11. > :43:15.getting the ball. John McEnroe sitting in the box, he was amazed.
:43:16. > :43:20.They were both something it. The ground strokes, unbelievable. The

:43:29. > :43:37.ridiculous. Really long game that row Anic .co break. -- row
:43:38. > :43:50.Milos Raonic got to break. Marin Cilic against Janko Tipsarevic. He
:43:51. > :43:56.had a tremendous win against Grigor Dimitrov. Yet again to fire this
:43:57. > :44:04.year. I'm willing into play well, get up the rankings. 36 now, better
:44:05. > :44:14.than that. A big win, the inventive Saric has not won to -- very much
:44:15. > :44:20.since coming back with that protective ranking. He will be in
:44:21. > :44:25.the Davis Cup thoughts. Serbia against Great Britain, on clay in
:44:26. > :44:29.Serbia. I think it is on clay. We don't know whether Novak Djokovic
:44:30. > :44:36.will play. Andy Murray certainly does. You can see it across the BBC.
:44:37. > :44:41.Looking forward to that. Quite a surface change. Once again, to go
:44:42. > :44:49.straight back onto clay after the grass. Eastbourne next week. The

:45:24. > :45:25.sound of the seagulls. Simon will certainly have something to think
:45:26. > :45:29.about heading back to the locker room. Peter Fleming and I want to
:45:30. > :45:37.talk about the tennis and the weather. Looking up to the skies, we
:45:38. > :45:42.have the app, with the radar, going either side of Queen's Club. Very
:45:43. > :45:47.little falling on the court, which is why the grand staff decided not
:45:48. > :45:52.to cover it. That is a good move, once you cover it, a lot of
:45:53. > :45:56.moisture, and the court gets wetter. Interesting, could have played for
:45:57. > :46:01.the last five minutes stop the rain has not started, they expected it.
:46:02. > :46:08.It is right here, pitch black. A little bit grey. We were having a
:46:09. > :46:14.conversation with John Lloyd earlier, we used to play in the
:46:15. > :46:19.rain, putting socks over the shoes. Very different game now, Dan the
:46:20. > :46:27.more genteel one we play. I hated playing on the wet, I'm like a
:46:28. > :46:32.giraffe. I was terrible. I needed the dry conditions for better
:46:33. > :46:44.footing. Maybe I was born, no, not the wrong time. I would not make the
:46:45. > :46:47.Futures Tour. Wonderful contrast between these two, Simon getting
:46:48. > :46:54.everything back, Kyle has the weapons. He has really improved over
:46:55. > :46:58.the last six months, one year. So much more effective at taking the
:46:59. > :47:03.ball early, coming into the net, being the aggressor. The backhand
:47:04. > :47:10.becoming a very solid shot. Hitting a lot of winners with it. His team,
:47:11. > :47:15.everybody should be really excited at the improvements. That is the
:47:16. > :47:19.thing, not afraid to come forward. He did seem a little
:47:20. > :47:24.one-dimensional. Like all the players, you have two add to your
:47:25. > :47:29.game. You do. You cannot sit back, the top players setting the bar so
:47:30. > :47:36.high. Unless you can defend like Andy Murray or Novak Djokovic. Yes,
:47:37. > :47:41.you will struggle. Kyle still has a cute challenges in that part of the
:47:42. > :47:48.game. He's crazy if he stays back and allows people to come at him.
:47:49. > :47:53.The attacking style play, it is a lot more difficult to perfect, then
:47:54. > :48:02.just ground strokes after ground stroke, which they have done since
:48:03. > :48:06.they were this five. -- this high. 30 years as proficient as he is,
:48:07. > :48:14.very impressive. The forehand is the big weapon. The back and not doing
:48:15. > :48:19.too bad. Really improving that. The works, trains with Andy Murray,
:48:20. > :48:25.spending time with Andy Murray. That can only be a good thing, to see how
:48:26. > :48:30.the players train and believe, going forward in matches. Also the work
:48:31. > :48:37.ethic. Kyle has never been afraid of hard work. Inset number two, he lost
:48:38. > :48:43.his way. I don't know whether that was physical or mental. His level of
:48:44. > :48:51.play dropped. I remember talking to someone in his team. Six months ago.
:48:52. > :48:57.Saying his diet was not the best. He may take a leaf out of Novak is
:48:58. > :49:04.MacBook, try to become a bit more disciplined in how he eats. That may
:49:05. > :49:08.allow him, even if his mentally, stay sharper. -- take a leaf out of
:49:09. > :49:23.Novak is Mac book. That was a crucial game, every game
:49:24. > :49:31.is vital. He played a few loose points to go down to 0-40. You are
:49:32. > :49:45.thinking he has lost it. He dug deep, played five really good points
:49:46. > :49:54.in a row. Beautiful forehand. His forehand... Whether that be. It will
:49:55. > :50:06.continue to improve, big shots, up with Kyrgios' forehand, Raonic. May
:50:07. > :50:13.not be Federer or Nadal, but very good. This is his game point. Such a
:50:14. > :50:17.big thing, knowing the rain was beginning to fall, the umbrella
:50:18. > :50:22.theme going up, that will give Simon a lot to think about. The missed
:50:23. > :50:27.opportunities. Not so happy sitting in the locker room. They have put
:50:28. > :50:33.the net up already, players will be making their way back out in five or
:50:34. > :50:42.six minutes. Very different feel in the locker room. More important for
:50:43. > :50:50.Kyle Dan Simon. Simon has been there, done it a thousand times. He
:50:51. > :50:57.gets to for- four, 5-5, third set tie-break, not going to phase in.
:50:58. > :51:07.For Kyle, to know he does held serve, puts him on a proper footing.
:51:08. > :51:13.He knows he can start this set again. Never easy coming out,
:51:14. > :51:20.knowing you have two breaks serve first. Dan Evans is playing against
:51:21. > :51:45.Henry Matteo -- Matthieu. Good to see him back.
:51:46. > :51:50.It is a journey for tennis players, some have more of a roller-coaster
:51:51. > :51:58.than others. Dan struggled with motivation, who knows what this and
:51:59. > :52:03.a lot of pitfalls can be out there waiting for you as a player. He's on
:52:04. > :52:07.roll, confident, ego, motivated, fit and playing well. Absolutely. Kallio
:52:08. > :52:22.spatter Bedene with a big victory yesterday
:52:23. > :52:28.as well. He's at a career-high ranking. Huge serve. Not played a
:52:29. > :52:36.lot on grass, you would think he would adjust well. Very graceful,
:52:37. > :52:42.tall, six foot five, on the clay slides around beautifully. With
:52:43. > :52:48.great balance. I thought he made just to the grass well. Did not see
:52:49. > :52:57.the match. Certainly he must've played well. He is up in the 60s.
:52:58. > :53:03.Becoming a top player. Winning the third and final set, real battle for
:53:04. > :53:09.him, match point at 5-4 in the third. Wonderful victory for him. He
:53:10. > :53:15.is involved in a quest to play Davis Cup for Great Britain. The ITF says
:53:16. > :53:24.he is on -- illegible because of three
:53:25. > :53:28.matches he played for Slovenia. Because he put in the application
:53:29. > :53:37.before the change to rules, that is the appeal. He has huge support from
:53:38. > :53:41.the lawn tennis Federation. Good luck to him, I don't know the ins
:53:42. > :53:48.and outs of tennis politics, who would want to? He would be a welcome
:53:49. > :53:55.addition. At the French Open, winning a couple of rounds, facing
:53:56. > :53:59.Djokovic. I don't know who was the first major play you played on a
:54:00. > :54:04.major stage, when you go out against the world number one on a major
:54:05. > :54:11.stage, you realise this is what I have to do. How far ahead they are.
:54:12. > :54:19.Exactly. Is he going to be a top five player? Probably not. They do
:54:20. > :54:28.not grow on trees. Who is to say he cannot be a top 20 player, top 30?
:54:29. > :54:33.That is a heck of an achievement. As far as British players are
:54:34. > :54:38.concerned. Kyle Edmund, one of the few. We have always said where are
:54:39. > :54:45.they, so many of them, Andy Murray going to Spain, and going to
:54:46. > :54:48.America. He is British-based, coming through the British system, the Lawn
:54:49. > :54:57.Tennis Association producing a top player. It is difficult to have a
:54:58. > :55:05.centralised programme. To create a lots of competition. So the cream
:55:06. > :55:13.will rise to the top. Kyle has done well to come through. Hopefully, the
:55:14. > :55:17.base will widen, and we will see a few more coming through. At least it
:55:18. > :55:23.gives them some sort of hope. They had Bisham Abbey, the tennis centre.
:55:24. > :55:29.There is a tennis restructure going on. Everybody saying it looks
:55:30. > :55:34.positive, the way the LTA is changing, trying to get more people
:55:35. > :55:40.playing the game. Let's face it, that is the role they should have.
:55:41. > :55:45.Grow the game of tennis. If the pool of players is much wider, look at
:55:46. > :55:52.France was that they have so many millions of people playing tennis,
:55:53. > :55:57.but of course some are going to come through. The base is pretty narrow
:55:58. > :56:02.in this country. The more people you can have playing at any level, the
:56:03. > :56:06.talented kids will come through. Even during the French Open, looking
:56:07. > :56:11.at the drop, littered with French players. They were saying, they
:56:12. > :56:17.would give those away to have one Andy Murray 's top to have a grand
:56:18. > :56:22.slam champion. It is being remembered as a grand slam champion.
:56:23. > :56:36.Yes, exactly. The grass is always greener. The whole question, how do
:56:37. > :56:41.you create a player? Is the developed or born? It is a tough
:56:42. > :56:50.one. Unless you have the Midas touch. Do not bother. It has to be a
:56:51. > :56:54.bit of both, the likes of Djokovic or Andy Murray, when situations get
:56:55. > :56:59.tough, they are the most incredible match players. Where do you learn
:57:00. > :57:08.that? Instinct, and desire within you. There are some environments,
:57:09. > :57:13.Andy and Jamie's mother, highly competitive player. She was tough.
:57:14. > :57:25.They learned that just by being around her. It is hard to legislate
:57:26. > :57:32.for that. One in a million. To try and say, OK we are going to create
:57:33. > :57:37.that. I don't think it works, do you? I don't. We were talking about
:57:38. > :57:44.the young players coming through, the Next generation, Nishikori,
:57:45. > :57:58.Milos Raonic. They could still make it. Almost the younger ones, Kyle
:57:59. > :58:08.Edmund's age, and younger. Coric, Taylor Fritz. Kyrgios. It requires
:58:09. > :58:15.something extra. I remember when McEnroe first burst on the scene, 18
:58:16. > :58:19.years old. We were sitting in a restaurant, the players' restaurant
:58:20. > :58:25.in Wimbledon. He had just gone through to the third round. Playing
:58:26. > :58:34.Carl Myler. Good solid German player. Third round. Someone said,
:58:35. > :58:39.you are playing Kyle Myler. 18, wet behind the years, just qualifying.
:58:40. > :58:45.He said, if I am losing to Carl Myler, I am quitting the game. I was
:58:46. > :58:58.ranked 45 in the world. Carl Myler was 60. I wouldn't be so keen on
:58:59. > :59:01.playing him. He drilled him. It requires that perspective on the
:59:02. > :59:10.world that not many people have. Kyrgios looks as if he might. A
:59:11. > :59:15.three minute warm up. While they do. More news to bring you today. The
:59:16. > :59:19.Wimbledon wildcard is have been announced, or some of them. This is
:59:20. > :59:33.for the Men's Singles. Dustin Brown, what a match he had
:59:34. > :59:38.against Rafa Nadal last year. The won dementias the tournament. Just
:59:39. > :59:42.before the wildcards were announced. They have given him the wildcard
:59:43. > :59:48.after last year's performance, real crowd pleaser. Highly entertaining
:59:49. > :59:53.player, go and watch him if you get the chance. Radek Stepanek took
:59:54. > :00:01.Murray to five sets at the French Open. 37 years of age. In the
:00:02. > :00:09.quarterfinals in 2006. Nobody will want to meet him in the first round.
:00:10. > :00:10.37, incredibly athletic. The two British players rewarded with the
:00:11. > :00:48.wildcard. As for the ladies. is is Laura Robson back from a top
:00:49. > :00:51.injury -- a wrist injury. Katie Swan, another talented young Briton,
:00:52. > :00:58.they have all been given the wildcards. That is the story. Peter
:00:59. > :01:05.and I will sit back and enjoy this one. What is the weather looking
:01:06. > :01:10.like, Peter? Oh, beautiful! OK, we believe you. Let's hope we can
:01:11. > :01:15.complete this one. COMMENTATOR: Yes, we have a bit of blue sky. That is a
:01:16. > :01:19.little bit over to the right. That has been over the top of us. It is
:01:20. > :01:26.exactly going according to plan, as far as the forecast is concerned.
:01:27. > :01:29.Heavy showers later on. It has been bubbling up since 8:30am. Gorgeous
:01:30. > :01:36.it was, outside, a bit more cloudy now. We hope to blue this match, and
:01:37. > :01:39.Krygios and Raonic to play a decider. In the present of John
:01:40. > :01:42.McEnroe, who was the subject of some chat just a few minutes ago. 23
:01:43. > :01:57.minutes in the last played here. The court surface hasn't taken on
:01:58. > :02:03.any moisture today, so with a bit of luck they will be able to keep their
:02:04. > :02:12.feet. Kyle Edmund has been on the ground once. I tell you what, he
:02:13. > :02:16.would do some doughnuts out there, Jeremy Clarkson, if we let him. A
:02:17. > :02:19.very keen tennis player. One of the worst tennis players I have ever
:02:20. > :02:24.seen, but really, really keen. He does what all tennis players ought
:02:25. > :02:28.to do, don't pick their partners very well. He was playing against
:02:29. > :02:32.Rachel Johnson, Boris Johnson for success to the other day, and she
:02:33. > :02:39.plays particularly well, especially on the forehand side. Does he do
:02:40. > :02:45.anything right, a forehand, a Serb, anything? I saw less footwork from
:02:46. > :02:50.Jeremy Clarkson Darren any other player I have seen at any time. When
:02:51. > :02:56.the ball came to him, he found the middle of the bat. Just decided not
:02:57. > :03:01.to move ever. Just doesn't move to it. Moments later, having concluded
:03:02. > :03:04.the match, he was pulling on a cigarette and having something or
:03:05. > :03:14.other to drink afterwards. He looked just happy, calm and relaxed. Nice
:03:15. > :03:17.to see the new Top Gear's ratings. Dear oh dear, what politics he has
:03:18. > :03:23.been involved in, but he loves the game and good to see him here. Jose
:03:24. > :03:27.Mourinho last year, alongside a mere Begovic, who used to play for Yeovil
:03:28. > :03:33.town. That was the big move he made when he was playing for Yeovil town
:03:34. > :03:41.at Ipswich. Of course now with Chelsea. A lot of faces. Nick
:03:42. > :03:46.Matthew is here today, former three-time world open Squash
:03:47. > :03:51.championship a another man from Yorkshire today,
:03:52. > :04:28.Kyle Edmund, playing Gilles Simon. Disappointing for Simon not to have
:04:29. > :04:32.broken in the previous game. He would have thought about that during
:04:33. > :04:35.the break. He had all of those break points against Edmund, and didn't
:04:36. > :04:49.take them. Kyle Edmund was running round that
:04:50. > :04:52.forehand, which is what he has to do on that second serve. Really half
:04:53. > :04:58.the time it is sitting in the middle of the box, just waiting to be
:04:59. > :05:14.really attacked. Let's see if he can get around this one.
:05:15. > :05:21.Therein lies the problem with that tactic, though. If you don't do
:05:22. > :05:23.enough with it, and you run round into the tramlines, you are
:05:24. > :05:26.vulnerable for the next backhand down the line. You have too much
:05:27. > :06:19.court to cover, which is what happened in that case.
:06:20. > :06:27.That was a very bad double fault, and he was moaning earlier in this
:06:28. > :06:40.match about a number of things. One of them seemed to be the ball toss
:06:41. > :06:53.not going quite where he wanted it to. This could be an interesting
:06:54. > :07:06.second serve. Amazing, three sloppy points in a row. 0- 40 down on the
:07:07. > :07:12.previous service game, Kyle Edmund, and managed to hold. And now... That
:07:13. > :07:31.is a bit I'm not sure that came off the
:07:32. > :07:38.middle. I don't think so either. Ended up with a good angled forehand
:07:39. > :07:45.but it did not hit the middle of the strings. With one of those old
:07:46. > :07:52.wooden rackets, it would have hit the handle. He has got a good
:07:53. > :07:56.attitude, his coach, hasn't he? Smiles a lot of time, he has a lot
:07:57. > :08:07.of stick coming at him but he doesn't care.
:08:08. > :08:15.We have never seen this before with Gilles Simon. 31 years of age. These
:08:16. > :08:21.things tend to happen to the older tennis player, as it happens to the
:08:22. > :08:28.older golfers as well. A touch of the nerves. Yes, he can't toss the
:08:29. > :08:49.ball at all. That's big hitting from Kyle Edmund,
:08:50. > :08:55.and he takes an important lead in this deciding set. Coach Ryan Jones
:08:56. > :09:04.delighted with that. He took that forehand on. Just fair, four or five
:09:05. > :09:08.shots in a row, that rally, where Simon just hit the ball mid-court.
:09:09. > :09:11.No authority in his ground strokes, no-confidence, just hoping that Kyle
:09:12. > :10:17.Edmund was going to miss, rather than doing something.
:10:18. > :10:25.That is a good shot there. For someone who has been struggling,
:10:26. > :10:31.like he has, to go for this shot. He tried to use that forehand. He
:10:32. > :10:32.thought he had done enough, but that was just such good balance from
:10:33. > :11:29.Simon. Just perfect. What a 15 minutes or so worth of
:11:30. > :11:34.play this has been for Kyle Edmund. It would be an important victory for
:11:35. > :11:40.him if he could get over the finish line. A long way to go. A big point
:11:41. > :12:02.here. Yes, that was the shout from the support camp.
:12:03. > :12:20.That's the way. Great hold. The British number three, Kyle Edmund,
:12:21. > :12:26.behind Andy Murray and Aljaz Bedene. He has moved up since then, a
:12:27. > :12:36.regular member of the top hundred now. Good job, a break-up. Now, we
:12:37. > :12:41.have been talking about the yips, the nerves on serve, you look for a
:12:42. > :12:46.nice consistent ball toss. I think that would have been illustrated by
:12:47. > :12:51.the second serve contact points piled Kyle Edmund on the left and
:12:52. > :13:01.the right. Everyone goes about it in a different way but that looks very
:13:02. > :13:07.consistent to me. Yes, well grouped. If you look like Gilles Simon, it
:13:08. > :13:14.looks like a bunch of spaghetti on the left-hand side, which is
:13:15. > :13:21.probably what his left arm feels like. If you ever go to do clinics
:13:22. > :13:25.with club players, they always say that is the most difficult thing,
:13:26. > :13:30.throwing the ball toss. You think that pros have got it down. Still
:13:31. > :13:35.practising it now. He has been playing this game fronted years and
:13:36. > :13:45.he still can't get it right. It is not about getting it right so, it is
:13:46. > :13:48.about a nervous twitch. He is flipping it, not just placing the
:13:49. > :13:53.ball up. What you just saw there was the closest thing to panic you will
:13:54. > :14:04.see on Gilles Simon's face on a tennis court, and it is an awful,
:14:05. > :14:14.awful feeling. You just want the ground to swallow you up. Over, he
:14:15. > :14:21.has done it again. I hesitate to even draw attention, but you have
:14:22. > :14:24.to. To be honest, in the last five or six years there has been
:14:25. > :14:26.something of that but it has been more often on the women's tour. If
:14:27. > :14:38.you look back at Ana Ivanovic. Medvedev. Exactly. Further back than
:14:39. > :14:42.that, Anna Kournikova, were literally the ball toss was going
:14:43. > :14:46.all over the place was almost catching it. I haven't seen it on
:14:47. > :14:55.the men's tour, that I can think of, like that. UMPIRE: Simon is
:14:56. > :14:59.challenging the call. It leads to a real fog. But I have been there. You
:15:00. > :15:04.feel a commendation of embarrassment, you make bad
:15:05. > :15:08.decisions like challenging calls when you shouldn't. You literally
:15:09. > :15:13.want to walk off, and you can't. The problem is, that is the only part of
:15:14. > :15:20.the game that you are in total control of, the serve. Everything
:15:21. > :15:31.else you have to react, and he can't even throw the ball up into the air
:15:32. > :15:34.now. This is a worry. Apart from this match. And everyone tries to
:15:35. > :15:38.help you and there is no way out, you just have to go out there and do
:15:39. > :15:42.it yourself. And then you do it a thousand times, and you get a set
:15:43. > :15:53.point on the thousand first, it hits again, and you never know when it is
:15:54. > :15:58.going to surface. The rest of the game now is completely wiped out. Of
:15:59. > :16:02.course. Because of the mental fog. They go. Still has to get the job
:16:03. > :16:38.done here. He is in great shape. He came strolling in there. He has
:16:39. > :16:48.been handed a gift, but he has still got to finish it. We are certainly
:16:49. > :16:51.focusing on Gilles Simon, with good reason here, but Kyle Edmund is on
:16:52. > :17:00.the verge of an important victory for him. It is a big court. He has
:17:01. > :17:04.played in the Davis Cup finals, so he has been in the situations want
:17:05. > :17:08.or twice before. He played Novak Djokovic in Miami this year. That
:17:09. > :17:15.was superb. He has won matches at slam level already. He has not won
:17:16. > :17:51.one at Wimbledon yet. He is away. Yes, that was a forehand
:17:52. > :18:30.that said get me off this court as quickly as possible.
:18:31. > :19:52.Done yet. APPLAUSE A big win for Kyle Edmund. 6-1 in
:19:53. > :19:56.the decider against Gilles Simon, a world-class player with a
:19:57. > :20:01.world-class dose of the yips, I'm afraid. I haven't seen a set like
:20:02. > :20:05.that for a long time, to watch someone disintegrate like that
:20:06. > :20:08.through a technical issue. The last one I can remember, and this is a
:20:09. > :20:12.wonderful win, don't take anything away from Kyle Edmund, but the last
:20:13. > :20:20.time I can remember someone with the trouble in the men's side was Novak
:20:21. > :20:26.Djokovic, when he changed his service motion and was serving
:20:27. > :20:41.double faults left, right and centre. That what they fabulous win.
:20:42. > :20:50.It really is, and he plays the winner of the evidence- Mathieu
:20:51. > :20:56.match, another British French encounter taking place, into a
:20:57. > :21:02.second set breaker. 21 years of age, Kyle Edmund, I wonder how long we
:21:03. > :21:05.will see a 31-year-old who has made an awful lot of money in the
:21:06. > :21:08.tournament. Not sure how much longer he will want to go through that but
:21:09. > :21:10.he will have to deal with that. But Kyle Edmund, his progression
:21:11. > :21:15.continues. Victories left right and centre last year, the same thing
:21:16. > :21:21.this year, climbing into the top hundred and staying there. He is in
:21:22. > :21:28.the 80s in the rankings. Maybe top 50 would be the goal this year. He
:21:29. > :21:32.said to me yesterday it is about step-by-step. His progress has been
:21:33. > :21:35.one step at a time. He doesn't leap up, he tends to be consistent. If
:21:36. > :21:38.you can consistently beat people in the top 20 of the world, you are
:21:39. > :21:41.going to fly up the rankings. Kyle Edmund, a British victory to begin
:21:42. > :21:44.our programme. On Centre Court, Kyrgios and Raonic to go but let's
:21:45. > :21:46.speak to Kyle Edmund. Kyle, many congratulations. That must feel
:21:47. > :21:49.good. Absolutely. It is the first time I have played on this court.
:21:50. > :21:52.You get asked lots of questions, what is it like to play in Britain,
:21:53. > :21:55.and it is just the home support I really like. Yes, it is something
:21:56. > :21:58.you never get to experience throughout the whole year because
:21:59. > :22:06.you are playing abroad, but it is nice to come here, and the support I
:22:07. > :22:10.got was really good, so thank you. Obviously a fantastic start for you
:22:11. > :22:14.today, came out playing really well from the start. Gilles played well
:22:15. > :22:17.and then the rain came. What were you saying to your coach when he
:22:18. > :22:21.went off the court? Just more of the same. I thought in the back end of
:22:22. > :22:24.the second set, I had a bit of a mental lapse. I played a sloppy game
:22:25. > :22:32.to get broken. So it was just trying to concentrate on what I was doing
:22:33. > :23:34.so forth. I really got my game on court and took my game to
:23:35. > :23:42.him so I was you did some training in the off-season with Andy Murray,
:23:43. > :23:45.didn't you? How much an impact is he on your tennis? It has been great to
:23:46. > :23:51.train with him the last three seasons I have spent with him. So I
:23:52. > :23:55.have been very fortunate to do that. He put in the work. It is good for
:23:56. > :23:59.me to see. If I want to get to the top of the game, that is what I need
:24:00. > :24:02.to do. He seems all right with me. Mini graduations. A terrific
:24:03. > :24:05.performance by Kyle Edmund. A semifinalist last year, holding his
:24:06. > :24:07.nerve when it mattered, and not being distracted by the problems
:24:08. > :24:10.Simon was having down the other end. It is a 3-set victory and through to
:24:11. > :24:12.the second round here at a major tournament, and that is going to
:24:13. > :24:15.improve not only his bank balance but his ranking, as well. Well done
:24:16. > :24:17.to Kyle Edmund. First of all, let's address Gilles Simon. We can
:24:18. > :24:20.identify it. Everybody knows how difficult it becomes when the left
:24:21. > :24:23.arm can't get the ball up in the right place. Yes, and who knows why
:24:24. > :24:25.that happens. But when it does, and it happens badly, as it certainly
:24:26. > :24:28.did to Gilles there, it is debilitating, and it saps all of
:24:29. > :24:32.your confidence, all of your self belief. Knowing the way he is, the
:24:33. > :24:38.sort of personality he is, I have a feeling that he will address that,
:24:39. > :24:44.and overcome it pretty quickly. That will be the hope. Because if he
:24:45. > :24:49.still has those issues come Wimbledon, yes, that is going to be
:24:50. > :24:52.difficult. It is just a horrible feeling, isn't it, and there is
:24:53. > :24:56.nothing you can do. As John was saying, it is the one shot you have
:24:57. > :25:02.full control of, and most of the time the serve is something that
:25:03. > :25:05.will set up the point. And we take it for granted that the ball toss is
:25:06. > :25:11.such an easy thing, just like throwing something in the bin. It is
:25:12. > :25:17.or is going to be right. But it has to be perfect, because if it isn't,
:25:18. > :25:23.then you adjust your service swing, and then all kinds of things can go
:25:24. > :25:26.wrong. As you say, especially in today's game, the first serve is so
:25:27. > :25:31.important in setting up the next shot. And suddenly, if you have to
:25:32. > :25:38.roll in the serve, just to make sure it goes in, then you are ceding the
:25:39. > :25:42.advantage. Just allowing the return to attack you. That is what happened
:25:43. > :25:47.today in the third set. Kyle Edmund, we talked about it, too one up he
:25:48. > :25:52.came back in the third set and didn't put a foot wrong after that.
:25:53. > :25:58.He really did a great job of closing it out. In the second set, he did
:25:59. > :26:03.lose his way badly. It looked like, where is he going? He played well so
:26:04. > :26:11.well the 11 or 12 games and then disappeared. That's ten minute break
:26:12. > :26:19.at the start of the third was incredibly beneficial for him. That
:26:20. > :26:25.when will help his bank balance, his ranking. I meant to put the ranking
:26:26. > :26:31.before the bank balance! They are both pretty nice! But most
:26:32. > :26:38.importantly, that will help his self-confidence, because, let's face
:26:39. > :26:41.it, to become a top player, perhaps the most difficult obstacle to
:26:42. > :26:47.overcome is just that self belief thing. Am I actually good enough to
:26:48. > :26:51.beat these guys? These guys were my heroes growing up. How do I fit in
:26:52. > :26:57.there? You beat a top 20 player, know what -- no matter what the
:26:58. > :27:01.circumstances are, it really does help you grow that much more
:27:02. > :27:06.quickly. We can see match point again and the celebration as well.
:27:07. > :27:11.That is the belief. You talk about the confidence he will have. He will
:27:12. > :27:15.now believe he can go out, particularly on this surface, where
:27:16. > :27:20.he has got the weapons, you can pull off another big upset. Let's not
:27:21. > :27:30.forget coming into this match he was one in seven on grass. So, yes, it
:27:31. > :27:39.is a well timed win, shall we say. It is so good for him. To have next
:27:40. > :27:44.Dan Evans or Paul-Henri Mathieu, it is a huge opportunity to improve the
:27:45. > :27:48.balance and the points again. Yes. You look down the draw as a player,
:27:49. > :27:52.you think would final is a semi-points, and this is a good
:27:53. > :28:00.thing. Usually you would have to be the seed to reach that stage. He has
:28:01. > :28:05.done that. It is not a bad draw, to be honest with you. It is a good
:28:06. > :28:12.draw for everybody. The winner of Evans and Mathieu, that is a great
:28:13. > :28:18.draw too. But it puts a bit of pressure on all concerned. And also,
:28:19. > :28:22.the next match coming up on court is one that was not completed
:28:23. > :28:29.yesterday. Nick Kyrgios against Milos Raonic, and Raonic has John
:28:30. > :28:33.McEnroe as his coach, courtside. They are back here today for a one
:28:34. > :28:39.set aside, because bad light stopped play, and it was honours even after
:28:40. > :28:44.two hard-fought sets. COMMENTATOR: What a cracker we have in store here
:28:45. > :28:49.for the Centre Court crowd, this man Nick Kyrgios, the Australian, young
:28:50. > :28:54.firebrand, against the Australian, Milos Raonic. Really looking forward
:28:55. > :29:06.to this match. John McEnroe is in the team of Milos Raonic. Raonic to
:29:07. > :29:11.serve. Ready, play. 15-0. The break points in the match both so far
:29:12. > :29:20.squandered by Raonic. So it is a tie-break in this first set.
:29:21. > :29:26.There it is for Krygios. Raonic has lost just four points on his serve
:29:27. > :29:37.in that first set, and he loses the set.
:29:38. > :30:17.That is wide. It is wide and it's wasted again by Raonic.
:30:18. > :30:25.OK, that's the best big point that Raonic has played today. We are
:30:26. > :30:37.getting to the point where we start to think of how much light there is
:30:38. > :30:42.remaining. There it is. Ladies and gentlemen, due to bad light, play
:30:43. > :30:46.suspended. It was a late finish last night. Delighted to say there is
:30:47. > :30:50.blue sky around the Queen's Club at the moment to allow them to complete
:30:51. > :30:54.this match. Nick Kyrgios, both players on court. You were in the
:30:55. > :30:58.box calling that one. We are going to get used to seeing this one a
:30:59. > :31:00.lot. The future of the game. Especially on this surface. On most
:31:01. > :31:12.surfaces really. They are, as you say, beyond the big
:31:13. > :31:19.four, they are two guys knocking on the door. To make personalities.
:31:20. > :31:25.Kyrgios such a big match player. He seems like a loose cannon, that he
:31:26. > :31:32.has something, the X Factor, which allows him to play really well on
:31:33. > :31:40.the big occasions. Always a danger. We saw him at Wimbledon, both
:31:41. > :31:47.playing well at Wimbledon. Raonic with the big serve, 30 does have
:31:48. > :31:52.things he needs to work on. One thing that John could help him the
:31:53. > :31:59.most with, moving around the court. When he gets from point a, to point
:32:00. > :32:05.the committee gets their athletically, but changing
:32:06. > :32:15.directions, not his forte. He needs to become more disciplined with his
:32:16. > :32:20.lips that. -- with his split step. John has three weeks, what does he
:32:21. > :32:25.try to address? If you do too much, drive the go crazy. Cannot think of
:32:26. > :32:30.that too many changes out there. Needs the basic game in place. All
:32:31. > :32:37.about moving forward, coming forward, winning points at the net.
:32:38. > :32:44.Finishing them. Returning serve, the backhand return, his backhand has
:32:45. > :32:50.improved in the last six months, such a better shot than it was.
:32:51. > :32:54.Still looks tentative on the return. Is that why he brought McEnroe in?
:32:55. > :33:00.To be more aggressive around the court? Ostensibly, to help him come
:33:01. > :33:06.forward. No question about that. He wants to learn that. Other things
:33:07. > :33:12.that are probably more important that should be addressed first.
:33:13. > :33:19.Movement. You cannot do that in three weeks? Yes, sometimes it is a
:33:20. > :33:29.matter, taking a split step. This is when you do it. So often he hits the
:33:30. > :33:35.ball and runs. If someone hits behind him, he's dead in the water.
:33:36. > :33:39.All very well for Rafa to do that, he can change directions on a dime.
:33:40. > :33:45.This guy is a tanker, does not change directions easily. That size
:33:46. > :33:51.giving him the huge serve, only losing four out of 39 firsts serve
:33:52. > :34:01.points yesterday. He is a six foot five version of Pete Sampras. Not
:34:02. > :34:11.this man, Raonic? Who is that, Woody Allen or someone. You rate is serve
:34:12. > :34:18.like Sampras? Yes, his body moves much the way Sampras used to.
:34:19. > :34:27.Amazing serve. The slice, the kicker, the flat one, 140 five. It
:34:28. > :34:35.is a bomb. What will Mac tell him coming out here? You have to get out
:34:36. > :34:40.of the blocks quick? John McEnroe, he had a skill for making his
:34:41. > :34:45.doubles partners play well. In tight situations, you would think they
:34:46. > :34:50.would be arguing, but that never happened. He had a good feel for
:34:51. > :34:57.saying the right thing to calm his people down. I am sure he had a
:34:58. > :35:03.quiet word with Milos to help him relax. He did mess up the few
:35:04. > :35:09.opportunities in the first set and a half, because he was a little tight.
:35:10. > :35:16.First match, he wants to impress Junior. Missing a feud because of
:35:17. > :35:20.that. Towards the end of the second set he started to come good. Let's
:35:21. > :35:26.talk a bit about Nick Kyrgios. Everybody talks about how
:35:27. > :35:35.unpredictable and volatile fees. Incredible talent, he has the big
:35:36. > :35:40.weapons as well. Great serve. Really solid ground strokes, and moves very
:35:41. > :35:46.well. Big guy, six foot four, gets around the court well. His
:35:47. > :35:52.personality both AIDS in and hurts him a little bit. He has this self
:35:53. > :35:59.belief and almost arrogance, allowing him to play against anybody
:36:00. > :36:10.and compete head to head. And yet, he chunters away, that works against
:36:11. > :36:18.them. We have seen him ahead, with evil people, this is Nick Kyrgios
:36:19. > :36:21.with tennis kids, a tennis initiative just before the
:36:22. > :36:26.tournament started. A chance for them to meet their heroes. Nick
:36:27. > :36:30.Kyrgios, they will be looking up to him, he makes you want to play
:36:31. > :36:36.tennis. Exciting to watch, different. Some things, maybe you
:36:37. > :36:42.should not have done that, said things about people, umpires, ball
:36:43. > :36:48.boys at the French Open. In some ways, that is part of his DNA. You
:36:49. > :36:54.never know what will happen next. That is fun to watch a guy like
:36:55. > :37:03.that. He has a lot of charm, as well. Not this brazen guy, that some
:37:04. > :37:08.people like to portray. When he is out on the court, in press
:37:09. > :37:18.conferences, not when he shines the most. Nick just about ready, Milos
:37:19. > :37:24.putting some of those big serves down. We will see how fast Peter
:37:25. > :37:32.Kenyon down to the commentary. Could be a long wait where Andrew Cotter.
:37:33. > :37:38.COMMENTATOR: We will hear from him in a moment. Only Andrew
:37:39. > :37:48.-- Peter Fleming can refer to John McEnroe as Woody Allen. He was
:37:49. > :37:53.getting a bit more animated last night, when the first set went to a
:37:54. > :37:57.tie-break. Kyrgios winning it after winning any four points on the
:37:58. > :38:07.Raonic serve in the set. Both these players used to finding themselves
:38:08. > :38:15.in tie-break. Kyrgios with the first set on the tie-break, Raonic taking
:38:16. > :38:33.the second. Here they are in the decider, Kyrgios Irving. -- serving.
:38:34. > :38:38.Yesterday, at the start of the match, Kyrgios, in his first two
:38:39. > :39:05.service games, a bit shaky. And again. The problem for Raonic,
:39:06. > :39:17.when he gets a break point, you have not converted many up to now. -- he
:39:18. > :39:23.has not. We talked about Raonic's splits that, moving up to the net.
:39:24. > :39:27.That time licking solid, perfect passing shot. Would have landed
:39:28. > :40:45.right on the line. I am impressed with the way Raonic
:40:46. > :40:50.has hit is ground strokes, they've yesterday and today. The better
:40:51. > :41:00.player from the back of the court, just not converting. Not converting
:41:01. > :41:02.break points when he has had them. Kyrgios just about keeping pace with
:41:03. > :41:52.Raonic in the ace count. 14-12. What a great second serve. Raonic
:41:53. > :42:14.had no time to get out of the way. Hold for Kyrgios, to get the
:42:15. > :42:33.deciding set under way. That is his elder brother, with the
:42:34. > :42:37.bald head. His agent alongside him. Nick Kyrgios always something to say
:42:38. > :42:52.on court. Barking away to his box there. Suncream is important!
:42:53. > :43:40.Beautifully done. Now, you see, that was not opt for movement from
:43:41. > :43:44.Raonic. The split step was miles late, still moving when Kyrgios hit
:43:45. > :43:50.the ball. Not actually on the ground. Soon enough to move to the
:43:51. > :44:21.ball. Up in the air, you can't go anywhere up in the air.
:44:22. > :44:27.On the previous point, having a conversation yesterday about some
:44:28. > :44:34.players having a natural instinct how to come to the net. It can be
:44:35. > :44:42.improved upon. That is something that McEnroe will look to do with
:44:43. > :44:48.Raonic. Absolutely. A bit of bother, 15-30.
:44:49. > :44:57.In fact if he helps him with nothing else in these next three weeks, he
:44:58. > :45:01.will have done him a huge favour, just impressing upon him the
:45:02. > :45:06.importance of getting a more important split step, executing it
:45:07. > :45:50.properly. He will have improved this guy a tonne.
:45:51. > :46:03.Honours even at the start of this deciding set. The winner of this one
:46:04. > :46:21.playing Jiri Vesely for the Czech Republic, a lucky loser having lost
:46:22. > :46:26.in the first round. Raonic trying to play at his own speed yesterday,
:46:27. > :46:31.keep Kyrgios waiting. Kyrgios has a lot of fast switching, like Andre
:46:32. > :46:34.Agassi, does not like to hang around. Andy Roddick, another guy
:46:35. > :46:45.really quick. Little talking to, from Raonic, to
:46:46. > :48:19.himself. Still a few unforced errors from
:48:20. > :48:25.both players at the moment. Typical approach shot to try and execute
:48:26. > :48:28.well, from that position. Crosscourt approach, meaning you have to get
:48:29. > :49:15.very quickly to the other side of the court.
:49:16. > :49:23.That is a perfect example of the power of intimidation. Did not put a
:49:24. > :49:28.lot on the approach shot. It is deep because on grass the bounce is not
:49:29. > :49:32.always perfect. The guy hitting the passing shots not that thrilled to
:49:33. > :49:56.be in that position. We talked about the scarcity of
:49:57. > :50:09.break points completed by Raonic, just the one. That was converted
:50:10. > :50:18.from nine. This is his tent. -- 10th. Unfortunately for Raonic, that
:50:19. > :50:19.was the result of times yesterday on break point, failing to put the
:50:20. > :51:00.break point, failing to put the returning to play.
:51:01. > :51:29.Fees it out well, survives another break points care. -- sees.
:51:30. > :51:36.That was the failing of Raonic yesterday, we talked about all the
:51:37. > :51:42.break point opportunities we have. Unable to take his first opportunity
:51:43. > :51:47.to day. We were always mentioning yesterday during the match, almost
:51:48. > :51:52.as if Kyrgios is becoming a very deep layer for Raonic. They have met
:51:53. > :51:59.five times, Raonic taking the first two, but the last three have gone to
:52:00. > :52:03.Kyrgios. Whether it is the style of play, they are chalk and cheese,
:52:04. > :52:10.pace of play, personalities, can get into your head. And a few occasions
:52:11. > :52:18.he got under Raonic's in. Raonic likes to be even tempered. Perhaps
:52:19. > :52:24.internalise with his emotions, a little too much. One of the things
:52:25. > :52:31.that Johnny McEnroe was talking and mulling over. Easy comfortable and
:52:32. > :52:39.willing getting into the guide's face. How best to deal with a
:52:40. > :52:44.personality like that. John McEnroe thinks the cameras are for him, but
:52:45. > :52:52.it is for David O'Leary, sitting behind him. Get out of the way,
:52:53. > :53:06.John. In the deciding set, for use latecomers. There he is. -- for use
:53:07. > :53:07.latecomers. Nick Kyrgios taking it upon himself to ask people to sit
:53:08. > :53:28.down. Have a word. That seat, that will do. As you
:53:29. > :53:33.would be, coming back from the hospitality tents. Denis
:53:34. > :55:10.That is unnecessary. That sort of error is born out of under
:55:11. > :55:17.confidence in his ability to cover the net. He tries to hit winners,
:55:18. > :55:22.rather than say I am going to put it the, put you in an awkward position,
:55:23. > :55:28.you are not going to pass me. That is the way Stefan Edberg would've
:55:29. > :55:50.played that. Not trying to play a winner.
:55:51. > :55:54.He thought he was going to kill off the service came briskly, but
:55:55. > :56:53.Kyrgios coming back into the fight. Great defensive work from Raonic.
:56:54. > :57:34.Not even the quick hands of Kyrgios can save that one.
:57:35. > :58:03.lob over this guy, so he can move better side to side, absolute
:58:04. > :58:11.nightmare to play. Absolutely vicious swerving serve. White flies
:58:12. > :58:35.up for another one. Great surfing, to close it out for
:58:36. > :58:46.Kyrgios. The match is following the pattern. Beautiful conditions. The
:58:47. > :58:56.sun is a rare and welcome sight at Queen's Club. The first two days
:58:57. > :59:00.have been pretty grim. First time we have had a prolonged period of play
:59:01. > :59:11.in. Summer Rae's forecast is pretty good now. Still impossible to pick a
:59:12. > :59:20.winner here. A pretty nice place to be when the sun is shining. A great
:59:21. > :59:26.venue. We mentioned how often it has been voted the tournament of the
:59:27. > :59:31.year when it was a 250 event. Now a 500 event. Attracting a good feel.
:59:32. > :59:50.Losing the Dell -- Nadal, Richard Gasquet before the
:59:51. > :59:56.tournament. The way the tour is, you have to play a certain number event.
:59:57. > :00:00.Certain players entering because they have two Fairfield the quota.
:00:01. > :00:08.And because they have table tennis in the players' Lounge. Just waiting
:00:09. > :00:13.again. How would you know that? Because I've been by people like you
:00:14. > :01:50.with the requisite pass to get in there.
:01:51. > :01:58.That's a good catch. A dreadful throw. She has just had shoulder
:01:59. > :02:14.surgery, I think. UMPIRE: Game, Raonic. Raonic finding
:02:15. > :02:23.his first serve largely in that game again, which is almost unreturnable.
:02:24. > :04:23.Is he a big Yankees fan, McEnroe? He's a New York fan.
:04:24. > :04:37.So in this deciding set... It is a tie-break as well, so a little bit
:04:38. > :04:53.of money on that. The crowd are enjoying it today. JC,
:04:54. > :05:01.Clarky. That's got to be his son to his right isn't it? It's his
:05:02. > :05:06.spitting image. Yes, he said, semi confidently. Yes, that is definitely
:05:07. > :05:16.his son. I'm going to stick my neck out there. Talk about irascible
:05:17. > :05:24.personalities. Oh, hello! Two tickets for the guns show. We were
:05:25. > :05:30.talking yesterday about how McEnroe I think would have loved to, I'm
:05:31. > :05:36.sure he loves coaching runnish as well, but he wee have loved to have
:05:37. > :05:42.been able to work with the likes of Kyrgios, as I'm sure he sees a
:05:43. > :05:47.little bit of himself in him. If Kyrgios doesn't really believe, he
:05:48. > :05:53.said recently, in supercoaches. He has done a bit himself with Lleyton
:05:54. > :05:57.Hewitt, but McEnroe-Kyrgios, what a team. Perhaps, yes. Or perhaps too
:05:58. > :06:28.much for everyone. Perhaps if Kyrgios and McEnroe
:06:29. > :06:29.spent, say, a week together they might spontaneously combust or
:06:30. > :07:22.something. Now you're talking! That forehand
:07:23. > :08:03.cross-court was hit well. Not a lot of room.
:08:04. > :08:14.That volley was hit with a good amount of pace. Skippeded it right
:08:15. > :08:17.through the court surface. Ppeded it right through the court surface.
:08:18. > :08:37.-- skidded it through the court surface.
:08:38. > :08:47.Fooled Raonic, fooled Kyrgios with that serve. Because it bounds off
:08:48. > :08:50.the court with the kick-spin, it's very difficult to time and to strike
:08:51. > :09:01.in the middle of strings. A Raonic special leads us to four
:09:02. > :09:29.games apiece. Kyrgios is keen to get on with
:09:30. > :09:46.things. I haven't seen him fidgeting away.
:09:47. > :10:53.That was Ed burg-like. Such is the precarious nature of tennis scoring,
:10:54. > :11:14.Kyrgios very close to the edge here. Raonic's serve to come.
:11:15. > :11:18.Well, a rare double fault brings us to two break points for Raonic. It
:11:19. > :11:36.may as well be match points. What has happened to Nick Kyrgios?!
:11:37. > :11:40.Two successive double faults. An angry waft of the racket and Raonic
:11:41. > :11:46.in a minute will serve for a place in the second round. And Kyrgios has
:11:47. > :11:52.disappeared. The first double fault appeared to be rather tentative. He
:11:53. > :11:56.rolled it into the net. I guess his way of dealing with that is OK, on
:11:57. > :12:03.the second one I'm going to go for it. And that also failed to
:12:04. > :12:08.materialise. So he's got his work cut out for him right now. But that
:12:09. > :12:12.came out of a clear blue sky, because he had been serving welling.
:12:13. > :12:16.We thought we were heading for a tie-break and ak and suddenly he's
:12:17. > :12:21.in a... Yeah, but I think that the pressure of the moment actually
:12:22. > :12:25.impacted him. Those couple of approach shots that Raonic played
:12:26. > :12:35.that forced Kyrgios to hit passing shots, neither of which he executed,
:12:36. > :12:45.put him in a hole at 15-30 and just didn't deal with it well. Nick
:12:46. > :12:51.Kyrgios has not managed to fashion one break point in the Raonic serve.
:12:52. > :13:07.Milos Raonic is serving for a place in the second round.
:13:08. > :13:18.UMPIRE: The ball is called out. I think this is pretty clearly out.
:13:19. > :13:23.He's thinking, well, I've got some challenges, got some time, play at
:13:24. > :13:39.my pace, slow things down, take a moment.
:13:40. > :14:04.UMPIRE: Mr Raonic has two challenges remaining.
:14:05. > :14:13.Kyrgios, it's all or bust here. Something that he is better than
:14:14. > :14:31.most at. He gets moment of inspiration.
:14:32. > :14:38.Plays with his opponents slightly. He is shaking his head slightly,
:14:39. > :14:42.Kyrgios. You think it's the last flicker of a dying man and then back
:14:43. > :14:47.to life he comes. Absolutely. He seems to do it naturally. It's a
:14:48. > :14:58.skill he's learned. He is good at putting opponents off.
:14:59. > :15:05.This match has gone a little bit mad. No break points for Kyrgios
:15:06. > :15:34.until this point, and now two of them.
:15:35. > :15:40.UMPIRE: Mr Kyrgios, the ball is called in. He's got no hope with
:15:41. > :15:44.this one. UMPIRE: The call stands. And one
:15:45. > :16:03.break point disappears. That's the way to respond to such
:16:04. > :16:06.danger. UMPIRE: Mr Kyrgios has two
:16:07. > :16:25.challenges remaining. Kyrgios moved early on that one,
:16:26. > :16:32.trying to guess. UMPIRE: Advantage Raonic. Just over
:16:33. > :16:49.a couple of hours, two days. Match Point Milos Raonic.
:16:50. > :17:01.Milos Raonic, the number three seed, is through to the second round. A
:17:02. > :17:04.match which disappeared from Nick Kyrgios in that deciding set, but
:17:05. > :17:12.Milos Raonic, it has taken him two days but he is safely through to
:17:13. > :17:18.round two. We'll see more of his big serving. Job done, coach happy. As
:17:19. > :17:22.happy as he can be. Milos Raonic is through to play Jiri Vesely of the
:17:23. > :17:27.Czech Republic in the second round. In not quite the way we expect that
:17:28. > :17:31.deciding set to unfold. It changed in that moment. That service game
:17:32. > :17:34.from Nick Kyrgios. No question, I think that Milos Raonic should be
:17:35. > :17:39.pleased with how he grafted that break in the final set, because he
:17:40. > :17:43.didn't really do a lot apart from hit a couple of approach shots to
:17:44. > :17:48.the net that were decent, forcing errors out of Kyrgios. And then
:17:49. > :17:52.Kyrgios didn't quite answer the bell the way he would like, with a couple
:17:53. > :17:56.of double faults. But that's how matches are won on this surface so
:17:57. > :18:04.often. If Raonic can gain the self belief that he can win matches in
:18:05. > :18:18.that fashion, then what an imposing opponent he will be over the next
:18:19. > :18:22.three or four weeks. Kyrgios is Leifing but Milos Raonic is getting
:18:23. > :18:30.ready for us to have a word with him. Raonic taking the second and
:18:31. > :18:34.it's decider today 26-4, 6-4. He plays Jiri Vesely of the Czech
:18:35. > :18:39.Republic. Let's get the thoughts of Milos Raonic, who is talking to
:18:40. > :18:47.Andrew castle. Congratulations. Nice to get back on the grass? It is.
:18:48. > :18:51.It's fun to be back here. This is my second year at Queen's. Nick Kyrgios
:18:52. > :18:57.a tough man to play but it sharpened you up. Yeah, it's a great way to
:18:58. > :19:02.start a tournament. There's many challenges ahead of me. My focus is
:19:03. > :19:06.on doubles. And holding serve from 15-40 in the last game, no wonder
:19:07. > :19:10.you are smiling. That always helps. I was serving pretty well all the
:19:11. > :19:17.way through. I knew I could find my way. We heard John McEnroe, always
:19:18. > :19:21.vocal as a player, in the commentary box and as a coach. Did you hear
:19:22. > :19:25.him? You couldn't miss him. How much have you practised with him here so
:19:26. > :19:29.far? Has he let anybody else practise with you? No, he's been on
:19:30. > :19:33.the court the whole time. I was hoping to hit some but he wants to
:19:34. > :19:36.keep playing. It's a lot of fun and he is very competitive. It's
:19:37. > :19:40.obviously benefitting me as well. And what did he say overnight, when
:19:41. > :19:45.it was one set all, overnight with Nick here. Was there any specific
:19:46. > :19:51.advice, apart from win? I think that was the main word. The second thing
:19:52. > :19:56.was really to keep going after my game and don't get passed down the
:19:57. > :20:00.line. OK. You've got to play a leftie now, so finally you can use
:20:01. > :20:05.John for some practise properly. Vesely, have you played him before?
:20:06. > :20:09.I played him on clay at the French Open two years ago. It's going to be
:20:10. > :20:15.a difficult match. He's been playing well, had some good wins, so I will
:20:16. > :20:19.have to play well. Good talking to you, Milos. Congratulations, Milos
:20:20. > :20:24.Raonic. STUDIO: So little between those two.
:20:25. > :20:29.Double faults so costly for Nick Kyrgios. But what a wonderful
:20:30. > :20:33.performance, particularly from Milos Raonic, and coach McEnroe will with
:20:34. > :20:38.delighted. That's the way to start, and come through a tough match, John
:20:39. > :20:43.Lloyd. That was a tricky one wasn't it? Very tricky. It throws
:20:44. > :20:50.everything into chaos with the practise and matches. If he lost
:20:51. > :20:55.first round today, do they go the tournament next week? He knew that
:20:56. > :20:59.Kyrgios would be tough, and it was, but to come through that? Those two,
:21:00. > :21:04.do they hit the ball hard? Hard? Staggering. And Raonic is dangerous.
:21:05. > :21:10.If he can keep this level up for five sets and improve on a couple of
:21:11. > :21:15.things, he's picked a good one there. The split step and moving in
:21:16. > :21:21.and finishing points on the volley, he does have a game. He has never
:21:22. > :21:26.believed, although he has done well at Wimbledon, believed head could
:21:27. > :21:30.win at Wimbledon. That's why you have someone like McEnroe in your
:21:31. > :21:35.Connor, a Grand Slam champion, and it will give him the confidence.
:21:36. > :21:38.Players do suffer from self doubts, even the top ones, but someone who
:21:39. > :21:42.has never won a slam before, you want to be going into a tournament
:21:43. > :21:46.like this and to Wimbledon where you've got to belief you can win it
:21:47. > :21:50.with. Or don't even play. Raonic is level. He's got in it with. Or don't
:21:51. > :21:53.even play. Raonic is level. He's got to win he -- he's got to believe he
:21:54. > :21:59.can win a tournament like Wimbledon, and there is no reason he can't.
:22:00. > :22:07.With someone like McEnroe focusing the right way, he is dangerous. He's
:22:08. > :22:12.gone up the rankings. Even McEnroe believes he can win Wimbledon. When
:22:13. > :22:16.you look at Djokovic and Murray you think wow, that's tough. But we've
:22:17. > :22:21.been talking about Raonic for a few years now. You think he now has the
:22:22. > :22:26.belief that he can break through? Yeah, he's got weapons, obviously,
:22:27. > :22:31.we can see how hard he can play. It is the subtle things here and there.
:22:32. > :22:36.The again I think it is the mental side, the belief in his side. Johnny
:22:37. > :22:41.McEnroe wouldn't have taken him on if he didn't think he couldn't win
:22:42. > :22:47.Wimbledon. He believes he can win it. I think it was a masterpiece to
:22:48. > :22:51.pick him. Absolutely. A really good choice. McEnroe, as we know, will
:22:52. > :22:57.not be shy in coming forward with his views as such. That was a
:22:58. > :23:01.tricky, he got himself into trouble in that last game, but when you've
:23:02. > :23:07.got a serve like that, technically how beautiful is that serve of
:23:08. > :23:15.Raonic? It is a marvellous serve. The great servers, the Samprases,
:23:16. > :23:19.the Ivanisevics, the motion is so fluid, and they serve 140 miles an
:23:20. > :23:23.hour every serve. You are watching at 15-40 and you are thinking, hold
:23:24. > :23:29.on a minute, but they don't doubt they are still going to win from
:23:30. > :23:33.15-40. They know the chances is if they get a point, they can pick the
:23:34. > :23:39.corners on vital points and they do it, by and large, all the time. How
:23:40. > :23:46.many times with did we see Sampras on a serve and then he will throw in
:23:47. > :23:52.a serve at 120 miles an hour. We do have the battle of the giants. There
:23:53. > :23:57.he is, 6 foot 10, John Isner up against 6 foot 6 Del Potro.
:23:58. > :24:02.Wonderful to see some blue sky overhead as well. Hopefully that
:24:03. > :24:06.will stay for some time. I believe John Inverdale has a special guest
:24:07. > :24:11.with him. I do. You are talking about the giants of tennis. I have a
:24:12. > :24:16.giant of broadcasting here. Jeremy Clarkson, how are you? I'm very
:24:17. > :24:22.well, how are you. You are a big tennis fan aren't you? I love it.
:24:23. > :24:27.You were watching Kyrgios. Two huge men are going to hit the ball hard
:24:28. > :24:35.over the next hour-and-a-half. Are you a fan of the beauty and the
:24:36. > :24:41.subtlety of the game, or do you like the brutality? Brutality?. I like
:24:42. > :24:44.all of it. You see a ball drop over the nets and you think there is no
:24:45. > :24:49.way you can get that back and they are there! It is a fantastic game to
:24:50. > :24:54.watch close up, life. Are you a Murray fan? His mum was in the
:24:55. > :24:59.papers today saying she didn't think he had the claim and adulation he
:25:00. > :25:03.deserves. Would you go along with that? I think he does it on purpose.
:25:04. > :25:08.I admire the way he doesn't court tumble opinion. He plays his game,
:25:09. > :25:15.brilliantly. Did well against Djokovic for the first set at least,
:25:16. > :25:19.and then he doesn't do that smiley PR Instagramy thing. That's to be
:25:20. > :25:23.applauded really. And in mark contrast to Lewis Hamilton. Exactly.
:25:24. > :25:27.There's Lewis posing every 15 minutes in some new idiotic outfit
:25:28. > :25:33.he's bought, and peace and love, brother. You think, oh come on,
:25:34. > :25:39.Lewis, just drive your car fast and ram each other off the track, that's
:25:40. > :25:42.what we want to see. So if you had the deciding vote in Sports
:25:43. > :25:49.Personality of the Year and Lewis Hamilton was world champion and Andy
:25:50. > :25:56.Murray had won, who would get your vote? Oh, God, could it be neither?!
:25:57. > :26:00.I wish we had longer to talk about the referendum and something like
:26:01. > :26:04.television... I spent the last 24 hours talking about that. It is
:26:05. > :26:08.extraordinary. It has captivated the imagination more than sport. It is
:26:09. > :26:13.amazing. Tell us what you're doing in your new venture? We are getting
:26:14. > :26:17.the films back from the edit and they are looking extremely good...
:26:18. > :26:21.If you say so yourself! We've got a name for it, it has a theme tune. We
:26:22. > :26:27.are extremely pleased. And the name is? The Grand Tour. And what's in
:26:28. > :26:33.the frame to be a potential theme tune then? We are having it
:26:34. > :26:38.specially done. Are you? It's the same crew as before, the same
:26:39. > :26:42.producer, same everything, but it is just a fresh start, a few little
:26:43. > :26:47.changes here and there, keep the IP lawyers happy. And away we go. No,
:26:48. > :26:53.it's great. Everyone is extremely happy. Tell me, I was talking to one
:26:54. > :26:58.of the players here earlier on who was saying, coming to grass gives
:26:59. > :27:02.them renewed enthusiasm, because they've been on the clay circuit for
:27:03. > :27:06.months on end. He said by the nature of the sport, the repetitive job,
:27:07. > :27:12.doing the same thing over and over again, you can get a bit jaded. And
:27:13. > :27:15.coming to a new environment, a new surface, reinvigorates them for a
:27:16. > :27:21.few months. Do you ever get tired getting behind the wheel of a car
:27:22. > :27:26.and thinking, here we go again? No, the now we've started with Amazon,
:27:27. > :27:29.ostensibly it is the same thing, we are wearing the same clothes and
:27:30. > :27:34.holding the same bat, it is different, because you are playing
:27:35. > :27:40.to an Amazon audience. It is not different, and yet it is. We are all
:27:41. > :27:44.completely invigorated. We look forward to going to work every day.
:27:45. > :27:48.Given that the world hangs on every word that you utter, who wins wibble
:27:49. > :27:53.dob this year? No idea. Djokovic properly. Seems to be winning with
:27:54. > :27:59.everything else, and that is great. I love watch him. A great, great
:28:00. > :28:10.player. Unless you were talking about women's tennis and I have no
:28:11. > :28:17.idea. Who will win this year? I think Garbine Muguruza. Thaw.
:28:18. > :28:22.STUDIO: Always sets on the fence, Jeremy. Interesting views there
:28:23. > :28:28.about that. What about views on this match here? Battle of the giants.
:28:29. > :28:33.Big servers here. Wonderful to see Del Potro bat. He's been off the
:28:34. > :28:37.tour with a wrist injury. Right-handed it is the left wrist
:28:38. > :28:42.but it is the double handed backhander that's been affected. It
:28:43. > :28:47.is such a pity when you see Del Potro. I'm convinced he would have
:28:48. > :28:51.won more Grand Slams without these injuries. He was brilliant in the US
:28:52. > :28:58.Open. You looked at him then and thought, he is going to be the guy
:28:59. > :29:03.or in the top three or four, and it's been injury after injury. This
:29:04. > :29:08.wrist injury, and can he get back to where he was? Unlikely, but he is
:29:09. > :29:12.still a threat. I'm so pleased he is out here playing, because he's just
:29:13. > :29:16.been unlucky. You worry whether the body will hold out for him. Exactly.
:29:17. > :29:21.If you look back at some of the wonderful matches. Djokovic, the
:29:22. > :29:25.semifinal back in 2013, that five-setter, it was one of the best
:29:26. > :29:29.ever. And the Olympics when he played that ridiculous match that
:29:30. > :29:35.went on forever. He is a classy player. You feel sorry for someone
:29:36. > :29:41.who's had the luck he's had. Hopefully he'll have some success in
:29:42. > :29:45.his career. He deserves it. He certainly does, and these are nice
:29:46. > :29:53.guys. I love interviewing John Isner. He has done so well. He has
:29:54. > :29:58.got a great game. He beat Federer on a clay court on a match in
:29:59. > :30:04.Switzerland. He's got a big serve and a big forehand. I would put his
:30:05. > :30:10.serve in the top four or five of all time I have ever seen. It is a
:30:11. > :30:14.motorist weapon. He worked a lot last year with Justin, but they've
:30:15. > :30:19.finished now. I think his game improved a lot. Justin worked with
:30:20. > :30:22.him a lot on strategy, the physicality of the game. He is a
:30:23. > :30:27.tough player. I would guarantee you that we are not going to see many
:30:28. > :30:32.rallies in this match, but we will see some two players that on their
:30:33. > :30:38.day are dangerous. These are two what you would call floaters coming
:30:39. > :30:43.up. Either one could do well here and at Wimbledon. Beth nice guys.
:30:44. > :30:46.You ul think with John Isner he should do better, but his ground
:30:47. > :30:51.strokes, he can't win easy matches. The problem is when he gets these
:30:52. > :30:55.Grand Slams he is always playing seven sixes in the fifth and fourth
:30:56. > :30:58.or whatever. By the time he's in the third or fourth round he is
:30:59. > :31:09.exhausted. Movement is key on grass and when
:31:10. > :31:15.you are so tall it is a long way to move and turn on grass. There are
:31:16. > :31:19.advantages and disadvantages. With the serve, it should be illegal, it
:31:20. > :31:25.is like serving with somebody on a ladder. But then those subtle
:31:26. > :31:30.movements on grass he struggles and he does not defend very well. His
:31:31. > :31:34.game is to try and get into that area upfront as quick as he can. If
:31:35. > :31:41.the rallies go any length of time, he struggles with his movement. I
:31:42. > :31:48.know he won a wonderful match at Wimbledon, but he does not embrace
:31:49. > :31:54.grass, he likes clay. Yes, because he gets a bit more time. But still
:31:55. > :31:59.when you look at that serve, he should always get to a tie-break in
:32:00. > :32:04.almost every set with that serve because it is one of the truly great
:32:05. > :32:08.shots in the game today of all time. The second serve is frightening.
:32:09. > :32:13.That was the one that made Tim Henman retired. He played him in
:32:14. > :32:20.Washington and the second serve was going over his head and he said, I
:32:21. > :32:25.have had enough! Good luck to those calling the service lies today if he
:32:26. > :32:26.is hitting them that hard. You are heading to the commentary box to
:32:27. > :32:56.join Andrew Castle. That will not be the last. Number
:32:57. > :33:17.seven seed serving here to Juan Martin Del Potro.
:33:18. > :34:45.He has got an unbelievable wingspan, an incredible forehand. That is what
:34:46. > :34:52.took him to the USA big title in 2009. It has been a long time since
:34:53. > :35:24.we have been able to say that. When you are as tall as this, it is
:35:25. > :37:25.pretty hazardous. That is not even read it. The slippery bit.
:37:26. > :37:35.That is a bad one down from John Isner. Had a chance to get into the
:37:36. > :37:38.net and a possible 30-30. The transition from the back to the
:37:39. > :37:58.front is always what John has tried to work on.
:37:59. > :38:06.Of all the tall guys, Juan Martin Del Potro amazes me more than any
:38:07. > :38:12.other. The standard of his movement and the quality of it and the
:38:13. > :38:15.ability to recover from the wings, the forehand and backhand side,
:38:16. > :38:26.always marked him out as the best of the tall players.
:38:27. > :38:37.And perhaps not surprising that team moved so well, he grew up on the
:38:38. > :38:46.clay courts of Buenos Aires and Clay requires you to construct the
:38:47. > :38:51.rallies and to hit ten, 12, 15 shots, and tests your technique like
:38:52. > :38:54.no other surface. It gives you a technical base that is so solid and
:38:55. > :39:16.can transfer to every surface. Only in service game. It must make
:39:17. > :39:24.him feel so uncomfortable. Six foot ten. It starts throwing down in your
:39:25. > :39:31.mind about when the ball is slightly wide. Do I feel like I am going to
:39:32. > :39:33.fall? You lose all your balance around the net and everything gets
:39:34. > :39:51.affected when that happens. Excellent technique on the backhand
:39:52. > :40:14.volley. That was a dipping ground stroke. He did well there.
:40:15. > :40:46.While the players change and, let's update you on what happened earlier
:40:47. > :40:51.today involving two British players. Not good news for Dan Evans on Court
:40:52. > :40:57.Number One. He had chances. The first two sets were split with a
:40:58. > :41:02.tie-break, but he eventually lost and then three in the third set. A
:41:03. > :41:11.real puzzle out on Court Number One, but that ends in disappointment for
:41:12. > :41:17.Dan Adams. Kyle Edmund pulled off a wonderful upset on Centre Court up
:41:18. > :41:23.against world number 18 who had all sorts of problems on his serve. He
:41:24. > :41:27.lost confidence, there were false and double faults and Kyle Edmund
:41:28. > :41:32.took advantage and pulled off a massive win against one of the top
:41:33. > :41:37.players in the world. So Kyle Edmund is through to the next round. That
:41:38. > :41:43.was earlier today. Sue, thank you very much. These are
:41:44. > :41:51.issues that the company sent out, the ones with the pimples on. They
:41:52. > :41:59.know what the rules and regulations are, otherwise you could end up with
:42:00. > :42:04.football studs. There have to be regulations, otherwise they would
:42:05. > :42:12.rip up the court. These two players here are playing in the first round
:42:13. > :42:19.match. The spectators are down at core level and getting an idea of
:42:20. > :42:25.how huge these guys are. They are not your regular Club players. The
:42:26. > :42:31.corporates are all in and enjoying themselves with a good lunch. But
:42:32. > :42:34.the umbrellas are going up. We are expecting heavy showers here later
:42:35. > :43:06.today, but they have held off so far.
:43:07. > :43:14.Sue Barker mentioned Dan Evans losing a close match. I was looking
:43:15. > :43:21.down the Wimbledon wild card lists expecting to see Dan's name, but
:43:22. > :43:26.this year he is a direct acceptance. I was going to say it is a
:43:27. > :43:31.consolation he got a wildcard, but he is inside the top 100. It is
:43:32. > :43:34.great for his confidence to have made it on his own without help. He
:43:35. > :44:07.has had a good year. I think cameraman just put those
:44:08. > :44:15.sprinkles on. I think it is cheating. Oh, no, fair enough. How
:44:16. > :44:20.could it in the integrity of this fine body of men and women who man
:44:21. > :44:23.the cameras to bring you these pictures. This looks like a
:44:24. > :44:31.reasonably quick piece of work from the ground staff. The membership I
:44:32. > :44:41.certainly moving as quick as they have done today as well. Do you
:44:42. > :44:54.drink your drink first and save that first and then your wife second? It
:44:55. > :45:00.was a bit of a false alarm earlier on in the Kyle Edmund match. It is
:45:01. > :45:07.not raining very hard now, it is just a slight drizzle. Again they
:45:08. > :45:16.are waiting. There is a gentleman again. Sue Barker ensures me that it
:45:17. > :45:22.is a garment. A poncho. What do they call those things? A poncho. I
:45:23. > :45:40.thought it was a bit of clingfilm. REFEREE: We are leaving the court
:45:41. > :45:53.for a couple of minutes to see what the weather is going to do. Nobody
:45:54. > :45:58.likes this. John is has already slipped two times. He is not a huge
:45:59. > :46:05.fan of the grass court and he is probably thinking, no more rain,
:46:06. > :46:08.please. Do you remember bigmouth Billy base, that fish that you
:46:09. > :46:19.mounted on a piece of wood and it sang. John Isner looks like he has
:46:20. > :46:28.got that on his hat. Wimbledon wild card Liam Brady. He was really close
:46:29. > :46:34.to winning the second round match. It was a rerun of the Wimbledon
:46:35. > :46:41.junior final a few years ago. Dustin Brown who beat Rafael Nadal having
:46:42. > :46:45.qualified last year. What a performance to beat him in the
:46:46. > :46:50.second round. Radek Stepanek who twice has had the honour of playing
:46:51. > :46:55.a fifth and decisive match in the Davis Cup for the Czech Republic in
:46:56. > :47:01.the Davis Cup final. He is a great competitor. Recently in the French
:47:02. > :47:05.Open he was two sets up on Andy Murray and he did the right thing
:47:06. > :47:14.and lost the next three. James Ward has lost in the first round here. He
:47:15. > :47:18.has been the Davis Cup storewide. People forgot about him a little bit
:47:19. > :47:26.during the Davis Cup win last year, but he won that match against John
:47:27. > :47:30.Isner that quite conceivably was the start of us winning it. If he had
:47:31. > :47:34.lost that match, it would have come down to the fifth match and it would
:47:35. > :47:41.have been him against Donald Young, which would have been a 50-50 match.
:47:42. > :47:47.But once he won that, we ended up winning the Davis Cup and James Ward
:47:48. > :48:02.pulled off an amazing result. These are the Women's Singles wildcards.
:48:03. > :48:08.Marina Malik over one the ITF 50 K and is 27 years of age. That must
:48:09. > :48:14.have been an agreement in place before the tournament. Tara Moore is
:48:15. > :48:22.playing extremely well. Katie Swan is American -based. She is a real
:48:23. > :48:32.talent and a great girl. We wish her the very best in her first senior
:48:33. > :48:42.Wimbledon. She received a grant from a charity called Tennis First Dustup
:48:43. > :48:46.Tara played well in Nottingham. We were talking about Del Potro, but
:48:47. > :48:54.Laura Robson has had a terrible wrist problem and what a talent she
:48:55. > :49:00.is. Hopefully she will get more confidence. She had to go back to
:49:01. > :49:06.the lower ranked events and she is prepared for it and she is ready for
:49:07. > :49:10.it and I hope that wrist is 100% and psychologically she can get back to
:49:11. > :49:17.the way she was playing because she was a talent. I have got a horrible
:49:18. > :49:25.feeling, and I do not want to say this, but you have to ask at the age
:49:26. > :49:32.of 29 for Rafael Nadal with a wrist injury, you have to wonder. If you
:49:33. > :49:39.pull out of the French, and Wimbledon, it is a very serious
:49:40. > :49:42.injury. I hope we have not seen the last of Rafael Nadal. Arguably one
:49:43. > :49:47.of the most glamorous figures in the game. His injury is ongoing. Juan
:49:48. > :49:53.Martin Del Potro has had surgery, three on the left wrist and one on
:49:54. > :50:00.the right. It is really tough to come back from that surgery. Good
:50:01. > :50:06.luck to Laura Robson. You can get through it. I remember Jimmy Connors
:50:07. > :50:12.was out for about six months with his wrist injury and he came back.
:50:13. > :50:19.He had that great run at the US Open at the age of 39 and he made it
:50:20. > :50:24.back. Who was that? Jimmy Connors. I know he had wrist surgery, I do not
:50:25. > :50:29.know exactly what it was, but he was out for a number of months and came
:50:30. > :50:39.back. You can do it. It depends on the surgery. Of course. I have had
:50:40. > :50:47.two surgeries this year and I want to thank the doctors. Do not ever
:50:48. > :50:52.get on a hover board. Believe me, that will never happen. You can go
:50:53. > :51:06.down like a tonne of bricks like I did. Here we go. Number one. The
:51:07. > :51:09.second one was a little bit more worrying because he is coming in for
:51:10. > :51:14.the split step which is where he needs to be. That movement is not
:51:15. > :51:21.good and that will beg his confidence a bit. It looks like
:51:22. > :51:28.everything is going back again, we are getting the net up. There were a
:51:29. > :51:34.few spots, so it will not have got any dryer. I am sure John Isner is
:51:35. > :51:38.concerned about this. It is not easy on the grass. Let's top tennis,
:51:39. > :51:45.Maria Sharapova banned for two years for a doping offence for taking
:51:46. > :51:49.meldonium. She took it for ten years under her own admission and in
:51:50. > :51:57.January when it became a substance listed under banned substances, it
:51:58. > :52:01.was banned on January one, all the warnings went out and yet she
:52:02. > :52:07.carried on taking it. As to why, who knows? That does not matter, it is
:52:08. > :52:14.in your system, so it is a positive doping test. I believe the ITF were
:52:15. > :52:20.looking for a four-year ban. She has appealed her two-year ban to the
:52:21. > :52:24.Court of Arbitration for Sport. Whether or not a lesson that will be
:52:25. > :52:30.up to them. These things do not tend to happen very quickly. A very
:52:31. > :52:34.important figure in the game, a great revenue generator and the
:52:35. > :52:40.woman who has won four Grand Slams. If I can offer a personal opinion,
:52:41. > :52:44.John, it is all very well talking about Sharapova and her revenue and
:52:45. > :52:49.what a glamorous figure she is, and she certainly is, and is positive
:52:50. > :52:57.for the game, but what about all the people she has beaten? People who
:52:58. > :53:01.have been denied the opportunity of glory and she has had a positive
:53:02. > :53:08.test. I always think about the people in athletics the same way.
:53:09. > :53:12.What about the lives that would have changed from pure and clean and
:53:13. > :53:17.honest athletes, a lot of them British over the years? What do you
:53:18. > :53:25.say? I think the ban is absolutely justified. She had the chances, she
:53:26. > :53:31.did not read the e-mails. Supposedly her group behind her did not warn
:53:32. > :53:35.her. But at this level with the multi million dollars in this sport
:53:36. > :53:38.and somebody of that stardom, it is tough to believe she did not know
:53:39. > :53:44.about it. It seems extraordinary to me. The rule is the rule and it
:53:45. > :53:49.sends out an amazing message to anybody who would be thinking about
:53:50. > :53:58.anything like that in the future. I think you have got to, if somebody
:53:59. > :54:02.gets found guilty, a top player or whatever, you have to impose the
:54:03. > :54:10.strictest punishment. Only illegal since January. She got caught up in
:54:11. > :54:16.that somehow. What on earth was somebody thinking in that team? You
:54:17. > :54:22.would have thought heads would have rolled. She is one of the most
:54:23. > :54:28.professional athlete I have ever witnessed in terms of training and
:54:29. > :54:34.preparation. I find it inconceivable that a mistake was made. What an
:54:35. > :54:39.oversight. Amazing. She is the most commercially endorsed female athlete
:54:40. > :54:46.in ten of the last 11 years. Serena Williams overtook this year with
:54:47. > :54:50.this pending I guess. And you have got the companies who are going to
:54:51. > :54:55.go forward and partner her still despite this. I think they have got
:54:56. > :54:57.something to answer for as well. That is one of the big talking
:54:58. > :55:16.points whilst we have a moment. Ten is coming up under quite night
:55:17. > :55:40.skies in a few minutes. This is what we have got coming up.
:55:41. > :55:49.We extend the British tennis season on the BBC. The Davis Cup is a
:55:50. > :55:53.quarterfinal and Britain are in defence of the Crown. Who knows
:55:54. > :56:01.whether Novak Djokovic will play or not. Andy Murray has told me he is
:56:02. > :56:11.keen to play. Unless something changes, but we hope it does not.
:56:12. > :56:27.Kyle Edmund is pretty sure to fill one of the spots.
:56:28. > :56:35.Stephen Farrar, the tournament director here, is a solicitor has
:56:36. > :56:42.been representing one of our other players, but the ITF are having
:56:43. > :56:47.nothing of it and he will make a very big difference going forward.
:56:48. > :56:53.He and Edmund with the double skies are still a formidable team. But
:56:54. > :57:01.Kyle Edmund with someone else is not the same sort of team. Especially
:57:02. > :57:08.not on clay. You have to think that sometimes Andy Murray will not be
:57:09. > :57:15.playing some of these matches. I am not a lawyer, but I am not sure they
:57:16. > :57:19.got the ruling right on that one. He played the three dead rubbers and I
:57:20. > :57:24.think he deserves a spot and I hope it gets reversed. He has got a
:57:25. > :57:29.British passport and there are international laws around this,
:57:30. > :57:40.restraint of trade. All of this has been looked at. In the middle of the
:57:41. > :57:44.night he had to get up and call in. It is a tough one for him and he is
:57:45. > :57:48.playing well and he is doing OK and he has got his British passport and
:57:49. > :57:54.he is delighted to be here, so it is not the end of the world.
:57:55. > :58:01.Fergus Murphy is in the middle there. He is quite a handy tennis
:58:02. > :58:10.player himself. He looks in good shape. He has been working on his
:58:11. > :58:15.fitness. He has been taking care of the input, John, trying to eat well.
:58:16. > :58:25.Look at that, that is a fine athlete. You can see Del Potro at
:58:26. > :58:32.the back. He is not convinced. He is sliding his foot. That is the
:58:33. > :58:37.problem. Grass is fun and great to watch, but any moisture in it is
:58:38. > :58:43.nasty. We have got to get big John and Ferguson in the same shot. No,
:58:44. > :58:50.he has walked away. He looks even bigger now! Fergus is a figure of
:58:51. > :59:11.authority, though. Here we go, go back. Oh! Did you ever mark out all
:59:12. > :59:22.your children got? UMPIRE: Seats quickly, please.
:59:23. > :00:55.We are going to get cracking straightaway. No warm up at all.
:00:56. > :01:06.That was close. Water challenge? You might at this
:01:07. > :01:35.stage, 30-30. It is always worth taking the chance on the challenge.
:01:36. > :01:44.Picking up your messages on Twitter and various other bits and bobs on
:01:45. > :01:53.social media, certainly we appreciate it. Somebody was
:01:54. > :01:58.suggesting, a horrible tanking from Simon against Kyle Edmund, who could
:01:59. > :02:03.not have cared less. I don't think that is accurate, to be honest with
:02:04. > :02:07.you. Having real trouble with the ball post in that match and Kyle was
:02:08. > :02:12.good enough to take advantage but his concentration rather fell apart.
:02:13. > :02:18.He could not get the ball up in the air to serve it properly. But you
:02:19. > :02:23.still got to win the points and Kyle Edmund didn't get too involved with
:02:24. > :02:27.what was going on on the other side of the net, you just took our
:02:28. > :02:36.business on his side of the court. It was a very good win. How would
:02:37. > :02:40.you not be if you had not been able to throw the ball to make serve, all
:02:41. > :03:21.of a sudden the ball toss goes. It is definitely worrying.
:03:22. > :03:29.Even though he missed out forehand, he has to take command early in the
:03:30. > :03:39.rally, if he gets a chance. John Isner. The movement on this court is
:03:40. > :03:51.not great by any means. You have got to get an early strike in, if you
:03:52. > :03:53.are to win this match. That has gone on to the other court, Court Number
:03:54. > :04:13.One. Adrian Maneiro and Steve Johnson
:04:14. > :04:19.walked in combat about other court. And the ball has come over, they
:04:20. > :04:21.have hit the back. They were probably in the middle of a rally,
:04:22. > :06:17.and they were annoyed! There is a bit of anticipation up
:06:18. > :08:05.there. Trying to keep the wind off. APPLAUSE
:08:06. > :08:11.UMPIRE: Isner leads 4-3, new balls, please.
:08:12. > :08:18.No breaks of serve. You will not see too many in this match with Isner
:08:19. > :08:23.against Del Potro, a pretty slippery court and two of the biggest players
:08:24. > :08:29.out there in the game. This is the comparison between the service. Look
:08:30. > :08:36.at that height. That is receiving it. That is what Del Potro is
:08:37. > :08:40.seeing, that ball going that height. And Del Potro gets the ball pretty
:08:41. > :08:46.high. Look at the difference. And throw into the mix, I think that
:08:47. > :08:50.John Isner 's second serve and comes in, this is his second so that he
:08:51. > :08:58.had in the last game, his second serve, remember, that one there,
:08:59. > :09:02.that was one of and 21 miles an hour on the second serve, so when you
:09:03. > :09:09.talk about the great serves of the game it is a great combination,
:09:10. > :09:12.first and second. And Isner, to me, that second serve backing up the
:09:13. > :09:17.first, it is one of the great serves of all time. It is about being
:09:18. > :09:24.unpredictable in the way that you serve, not just the speed but
:09:25. > :09:27.direction. Roger Federer did not have one of the biggest serves...
:09:28. > :09:34.But one of the best because he got the job done with out so many aces.
:09:35. > :09:43.But Isner is in the top four or five that I have ever seen. Harry Weddell
:09:44. > :09:52.says whilst we are reading tweets, questions for John Lloyd. Is tennis
:09:53. > :09:56.getting smaller in fact with Nishikori, David Ferrer, Kei
:09:57. > :10:03.Nishikori proving that speed can be helpful over height. It is good that
:10:04. > :10:09.we have a combination. I am not sure that 6-foot ten is the ideal height
:10:10. > :10:13.but I would still rather be 6-foot two, six foot three, rather than
:10:14. > :10:18.five foot eight, five foot nine. It shows that you can do both in this
:10:19. > :10:27.game. Dorothy Langley enjoys Devonshire Park as a venue. That is
:10:28. > :10:33.next week for the women's event. Jo Konta playing at home. And you play
:10:34. > :10:40.the nationals down their? I did, in those days, the spectators were
:10:41. > :10:44.sitting in deckchairs. It is a much nicer stadium than it used to be.
:10:45. > :10:51.Good venue. Very good grass court. We played lots of Davis Cup matches
:10:52. > :10:54.there. But it was always windy. Then he played against these other
:10:55. > :10:58.countries and it was a force nine gale coming off the sea. It was
:10:59. > :11:06.lovely. They didn't like it, we did. Joanne says, I don't want to worry
:11:07. > :11:10.you, Andrew, but a thunderstorm started here in Abingdon. Another
:11:11. > :11:16.viewer says can you give a mention to the boys and girls at the tennis
:11:17. > :11:21.Europe event at Holton tennis club. They have just stopped for a
:11:22. > :11:29.thunderstorm. The first time I went was to play a quadrangle match at
:11:30. > :11:31.Devonshire Park. So the very best of luck to the under 12 is boys and
:11:32. > :11:50.girls. @Bbctennis, #bbctennis, that is the
:11:51. > :11:59.way to get in touch. It doesn't look like it is raining, hardly, but it
:12:00. > :12:07.must be one of those timing issues. Is it fair to question the
:12:08. > :12:20.legitimacy of wins over opponents when Meldonium was not banned by
:12:21. > :12:26.Wada? Did I? If something is not banned, then fine. If something is
:12:27. > :12:33.banned, then not fine. That is fairly simple. She admitted taking
:12:34. > :12:38.this substance for ten years. Why wasn't it the band before? Some
:12:39. > :12:43.other Russian athletes have been found out. Thank you for your
:12:44. > :12:51.contribution to the debate. I will have a think about that.
:12:52. > :12:59.Very patient crowd here. They love their tennis and they are prepared
:13:00. > :13:03.to stick it out. We have had enough rain the past few days, but they are
:13:04. > :13:11.always here, ready, just in case we get some matches on.
:13:12. > :13:17.Andrew and John, watching from the comfort of the studio, it is hard
:13:18. > :13:21.for these big guys. You cannot make them sit on the court. Once there
:13:22. > :13:23.was enough moisture wonder, you could see that they were unhappy
:13:24. > :13:30.about Lane. They don't move as well on the grass because it is a long
:13:31. > :13:34.way to fall, and it is a wise move, taking them off. It is an important
:13:35. > :13:37.tournament but it is important preparation for Wimbledon just
:13:38. > :13:44.around the corner. Spectators understand that. You don't see them
:13:45. > :13:47.slow hand clapping because they cannot understand why the players
:13:48. > :13:52.are not out. They are knowledgeable. They know that grass is one of those
:13:53. > :13:57.services, and with two big fellows like this, if they were slipping and
:13:58. > :14:01.sliding around, they did not want to play any more. It is the right thing
:14:02. > :14:07.to do. The umbrellas are still up, but it is bathed in sunshine at the
:14:08. > :14:13.moment. We can see some raindrops on the camera lens, but it is a brave
:14:14. > :14:19.decision as it was before not to put the cover on. He's looking to the
:14:20. > :14:23.direction the weather is coming from and there is lots of blue sky out
:14:24. > :14:29.there. The sunshine will dry the court out better than covering it.
:14:30. > :14:33.It looks like a cat ready to pounce on an injured bird. He looks ready
:14:34. > :14:40.to leap into action. You are quite right. To get some warm sunshine on
:14:41. > :14:43.the court is great. Isn't it funny, Sue, every time this has happened it
:14:44. > :14:48.has been bright sunshine at about two minutes later. You have one of
:14:49. > :14:53.those weather apps. What is the story? It looks like we could have
:14:54. > :14:57.quite a dry spell. It is looking good later in the evening, when we
:14:58. > :15:02.go off air from 6pm. They will get the matches played today, but it is
:15:03. > :15:07.going to be a bit tricky. Maybe one more shower while we are on air,
:15:08. > :15:11.before we moved to the Red Button. Whilst waiting for the players to
:15:12. > :15:15.come on, we will give you some more news and get back to you on another
:15:16. > :15:18.couple of talking points. We would like to give you some news of what
:15:19. > :15:24.is happening to the British women at Edgbaston this week. Laura Robson
:15:25. > :15:29.went out in the court of -- qualifying. She had her first win
:15:30. > :15:32.over a player in the top hundred, good news for Laura Robson who is
:15:33. > :15:42.fighting back from a wrist injury. On Monday, Heather Watson won her
:15:43. > :15:47.first round against Giorgi of Italy. Terrific result. Disappointment for
:15:48. > :15:56.Naomi and Paramore, who finished their matches today, finally. Brady
:15:57. > :16:06.went down to Gavrilova of Australia. And Tara Moore, that was a marathon,
:16:07. > :16:16.2.5 hours on court against Pazsek. Great news for Robson and for Moore
:16:17. > :16:19.getting wildcards for Wimbledon the others have gone through the main
:16:20. > :16:28.draw. Also some news from the grass court tournament in Halle were Roger
:16:29. > :16:34.Federer has won 6-4, 7-5 against Jan-Lennard Struff. As appointing
:16:35. > :16:41.news involving Kei Nishikori. He's had to withdraw because of a rib
:16:42. > :16:47.injury. Now it is a rib injury that is affecting Kei Nishikori. That is
:16:48. > :16:55.a real worry. I guess that you have still got another week and a half
:16:56. > :16:58.before Wimbledon. It might be before the biggest championship in the
:16:59. > :17:03.world, and that is always a bit strange. He has had some injury
:17:04. > :17:07.problems in the last year, but hopefully, you will be OK, because
:17:08. > :17:14.he can be a threat at Wimbledon. Just to correct one thing, you go
:17:15. > :17:19.home at 6pm, I do say that the Red Button is on, we are going to stay
:17:20. > :17:25.right until the end. I was watching. I will stay and watch Mr Murray.
:17:26. > :17:32.Absolutely. They need to get these matches played. I was talking to
:17:33. > :17:36.Stephen Parry, only 3.5 matches behind. As appointing for the fans
:17:37. > :17:41.hoping to see Andy Murray on every day. He will be back tomorrow for
:17:42. > :17:53.his match. That'll be an interesting one, won't it? I was reading this
:17:54. > :18:01.morning. It passed me by. Andy Murray has not played a British
:18:02. > :18:07.player in ten years. Any British player, apart from Tim Henman, Andy
:18:08. > :18:13.Murray. It is amazing. It takes one that came over from Slovenia for him
:18:14. > :18:17.to play them at tour level. I thought that was amazing. Andy
:18:18. > :18:22.Murray will be keen to get back on court. He was very impressive
:18:23. > :18:31.yesterday. He will be trying to improve on that tough opener against
:18:32. > :18:36.Mahut. He was very sharp considering he had those five days of. The court
:18:37. > :18:43.was a little bit damp and playing against a class player, Mahut, who
:18:44. > :18:48.had just won a tournament, he was down, a break point, and all that,
:18:49. > :18:52.but his attitude was good. He looked sharp and eager. He looked alert. It
:18:53. > :18:58.was a fine performance. It was a tough first-round draw. He was
:18:59. > :19:01.showing proper, due respect for a superb opponent and also for the
:19:02. > :19:07.fact that Ivan Lendl was sitting over in his box. Incredibly intense
:19:08. > :19:15.performance from Andy Murray. It was not until the third round last year
:19:16. > :19:19.against Muller when he went on a second set tie-break and was a
:19:20. > :19:23.moment when, OK, you really want to be here, and he powered his way to a
:19:24. > :19:29.fourth title. That match suddenly got incredibly intense. I thought we
:19:30. > :19:33.saw that yesterday. The signs are good for Andy Murray going forward.
:19:34. > :19:37.I still think Novak Djokovic has to be considered favourite to retain
:19:38. > :19:42.the championship at Wimbledon but it has to be and Murray in the final,
:19:43. > :19:46.by a long way, the most likely final. With respect to Roger
:19:47. > :19:51.Federer, of course. We may be showing some of that Andy Murray
:19:52. > :19:54.match in just a moment. The tournament directors looking at his
:19:55. > :20:00.weather app. There is a dark cloud looming. That is the one that,
:20:01. > :20:06.again, we're hoping that it will miss Queen's Club but some worrying
:20:07. > :20:14.glances from the tournament director on the Centre Court at the moment.
:20:15. > :20:17.While we have a little bit of time, let's just remind people what
:20:18. > :20:25.happened earlier today. Kyle Edmund, the 21-year-old from great written
:20:26. > :20:28.put out the world number 18, Gilles Simon. Wonderful performance from
:20:29. > :20:32.Kyle Edmund against a player who lost all the red and the ball toss
:20:33. > :20:40.on his serve in the third set. It was one-way traffic in the final
:20:41. > :20:45.set, Edmund winning 6-1. What a performance from Kyle Edmund.
:20:46. > :20:49.Wonderful celebration. One of the biggest wins of his career. And he
:20:50. > :20:57.is through to the second round. Let's hear what he had to say to
:20:58. > :21:01.David Lloyd. Congratulations, that must be all good. Absolutely. The
:21:02. > :21:06.first time I have played on this court. You get asked questions what
:21:07. > :21:12.it is like to play in Britain and the home support, I really like it.
:21:13. > :21:15.It is something you never get to experience throughout the year
:21:16. > :21:23.because you're playing abroad. It is nice to come here, and as I got was
:21:24. > :21:27.good, so thank you. Obviously, fantastic start. You came out
:21:28. > :21:32.playing well from the start. Gilles Simon came back into it then the
:21:33. > :21:36.rain came. What did you say to your coach when you came off the court?
:21:37. > :21:42.Just more of the same, really. At the back end of the second set I had
:21:43. > :21:46.a bit of a mental lapse and I had up sloppy game, they get broken. I was
:21:47. > :21:53.just trying to concentrate on what I was doing. Coming out on the
:21:54. > :21:57.changing rooms for the second time, I got my game on court and I took my
:21:58. > :22:02.game to him. So I was pleased with that. You did some training in the
:22:03. > :22:07.off-season with Andy Murray. How big an impact is he on your tennis? It
:22:08. > :22:15.has been great, to be able to train with him, the last three pre-season
:22:16. > :22:20.is I have spent with him so I have been very fortunate to do that. You
:22:21. > :22:25.speak to him, you get looking at what he does on court, of course,
:22:26. > :22:29.how professional he is, and he deserves every success he gets,
:22:30. > :22:33.because he puts in the work. He trains at the very high intensity.
:22:34. > :22:37.That is good for me to see, and it shows that if I want to reach the
:22:38. > :22:41.top of the game that is what I need to do. You beat him in the Royal
:22:42. > :22:46.Albert Hall tournament. Has he given -- for giving you the Mac? I don't
:22:47. > :22:51.know, you should ask him! He seems all right, so yes. Congratulations
:22:52. > :23:03.and good luck to the next one. Thank you. And the next one, he will be up
:23:04. > :23:07.against Mathieu of France. Another all British affair in the second.
:23:08. > :23:11.But it was Mathieu came through on the third and final set.
:23:12. > :23:16.Disappointment for Dan Evans who had a terrific year, winning on the
:23:17. > :23:21.Challenger Tour, and moving back into the top 100. But coming up,
:23:22. > :23:27.Mathieu against Kyle Edmund. Dark clouds around, difficult for
:23:28. > :23:32.everybody, players, spectators, but we are hearing that the players will
:23:33. > :23:38.be coming out in 15 minutes. We were talking about Andy Murray and his
:23:39. > :23:41.tough opener against Nicolas Mahut of France. We can show you the first
:23:42. > :23:50.set tie-breaker with Andy Murray to serve.
:23:51. > :24:15.Seventh ace and no double faults for Murray. One break apiece. Mahut
:24:16. > :24:27.might think back to the game when he was up 40-0, but lost.
:24:28. > :24:34.My first taught was he was doing to hit that as a slice coming down the
:24:35. > :24:44.line. He smacked that ball away. He gets over the top of that really
:24:45. > :24:48.well. That is the ball you measure him on. If he is not confident, he
:24:49. > :25:17.can't hit that ball. So quick to get up to that one. That
:25:18. > :25:23.is what you like to see. The instinct to go forward after the
:25:24. > :25:28.serve. He gets up to it so early. That ball was nice and high. If he
:25:29. > :25:31.had reacted slower that would have been lower, and much more difficult
:25:32. > :25:40.shot, but he was so quick to get up to that ball.
:25:41. > :26:02.Haven't seen a lot of tennis over the first two days, but of the
:26:03. > :26:22.tennis we have seen this is the finest game by a long way.
:26:23. > :26:46.Ten times a Grand Slam finalist. Two of those Grand Slam finals this
:26:47. > :26:57.year, Andy Murray. Winning two, losing eight, doesn't
:26:58. > :26:59.sound like a great percentage, but he has been in ten. That is the
:27:00. > :27:11.number to focus in on. UMPIRE: Mr Murray challenging the
:27:12. > :27:24.call. Call stands. Mr Murray has three
:27:25. > :27:54.challenges remaining. Surprised he went for that. It was a
:27:55. > :27:59.risky shot. It was so deep to go down the line here. Looked like he
:28:00. > :28:03.was almost going for a winner. Nice and clean, got himself back into the
:28:04. > :28:13.central area of the court. And he was beaten for them. -- length.
:28:14. > :28:25.APPLAUSE One of these next two points would
:28:26. > :28:29.be good, two of them would bring him the set. Mahut serving for the next
:28:30. > :28:57.two points. That is in. He's off. Didn't like
:28:58. > :29:03.the look of that when he was charging there. That umpires chair
:29:04. > :29:09.'s a bit of an obstacle. What a magnificent half-volley. Incredible
:29:10. > :29:21.shot. From Mahut. And what a shot from Andy Murray. I'm not sure if
:29:22. > :29:26.the umpire could have suddenly moved the chair! It is a big point, this
:29:27. > :29:46.one. So good, so good. The lob, running
:29:47. > :30:03.from the baseline, looked like he was out at that point. So good. This
:30:04. > :30:06.was the lob. We don't see that very often, Ivan Lendl clapping! Set
:30:07. > :30:28.point. Oh, what a return! UMPIRE: Mr Murray
:30:29. > :30:31.challenging the point. I think Murray was surprised at the return
:30:32. > :30:38.coming that fast. I don't think he react. It was neither a block nor a
:30:39. > :30:42.full swing. He pulled it out wide, it arrived so quickly. It was a
:30:43. > :30:48.great serve. It came at him so quickly. And just pulled that wide,
:30:49. > :31:01.what a return of serve. Dragged it from behind. UMPIRE: Take your seats
:31:02. > :31:11.or standstill. Lake Ontario 's. -- play continues. They have gone a bit
:31:12. > :31:12.prematurely in the old stands. The stands are quite narrow. The
:31:13. > :31:46.walkways. Taking time, just visualising where
:31:47. > :33:13.this serve is going to go. Crouch come on, Andy! -- CROWD: Come
:33:14. > :33:14.Andy! COMMENTATOR: Having had opportunities himself, he has to
:33:15. > :33:40.fight off a Mahut set point. APPLAUSE
:33:41. > :33:49.Didn't fancy serving to Mahut's study aside, the backhand slice.
:33:50. > :34:06.Digging that second serve in. Getting the reward.
:34:07. > :34:16.And another serve to the forehand side of Mahut. Some presence of mind
:34:17. > :34:17.from Andy Murray to perceive to -- to serve to what he perceives to be
:34:18. > :34:45.the weaker side of his opponent. First set to Andy Murray. Excellent
:34:46. > :34:50.match. Excellent tie-break. Murray's composter, as well as his play,
:34:51. > :34:53.getting him through that. SUE BARKER: That was Murray taking the
:34:54. > :34:59.first set yesterday. We will not show you how it finished, this is
:35:00. > :35:03.how it looks at the Queen's Club. Dark clouds all around, so we may go
:35:04. > :35:11.back to that match, but there is sunshine now, so back we go once
:35:12. > :35:14.again to John Isner and Juan Martin Del Potro, with John and Andy.
:35:15. > :35:21.COMMENTATOR: The sky looks rather dramatic. But the court is still
:35:22. > :35:28.bathed in sunshine. It is 4- three to John Isner, they will be playing
:35:29. > :35:33.with brand-new tennis balls. Big John Isner, who went through the
:35:34. > :35:38.college system. He was at the University of Georgia, the Georgia
:35:39. > :35:42.Bulldogs, runner-up in the singles, won the doubles and took his
:35:43. > :35:47.university to the table. That was his route through. Juan Martin Del
:35:48. > :35:53.Potro came through and was a force pretty early, the 2009 U.S. Open
:35:54. > :35:56.champion. He has endured four wrist surgery is, but he is back and
:35:57. > :36:06.better, it is a pleasure to see. The lay-offs really affected him.
:36:07. > :36:54.Great start. It is one of the great sights in
:36:55. > :36:55.tennis when Del Potro starts toe-tapping around the backhand side
:36:56. > :37:26.and winding up that forehand. He has not lost a single point in
:37:27. > :37:34.this matter should when he has got his first serve in, 12 out of 12 --
:37:35. > :37:42.a single point in this match. Isn't that absolutely typical?! It
:37:43. > :37:45.had to be! Testing the commentary curse live! A weird scientific
:37:46. > :38:19.experiment on BBC Two! Mentioned that 2009 U.S. Open
:38:20. > :38:25.victory, only four majors in the year. It is the club to join. The
:38:26. > :38:30.year that Del Potro won the U.S. Open, he defeated Federer in the
:38:31. > :38:36.tournament match. A five set final. It was fantastic. It started a 14
:38:37. > :38:40.match winning streak at the U.S. Open for Roger Federer -- it snapped
:38:41. > :38:56.a 40 match winning streak. Of course, he beat Nadal in the
:38:57. > :39:06.semifinal of that same tournament. The first Argentine to win the U.S.
:39:07. > :39:37.Open since Vilas in 1977. I bet you played that one, John? Yes.
:39:38. > :39:42.Del Potro is getting pinned a little bit too far back, the length is not

:41:10. > :41:13.He is from North Carolina, that's his basketball. You would think that

:41:19. > :41:22.you a believer in playing lots of different sports growing up, or
:41:23. > :41:27.specialising young? I think multiple sports is a good idea up until about
:41:28. > :41:31.11 or 12, then if you have one, from then onwards I think you have to
:41:32. > :41:35.start to see Roe in. I don't think playing a couple of other sports is
:41:36. > :41:43.a bad idea. Don't go crazy, what do they call the sports where you go up
:41:44. > :41:49.and down the ramps and stuff? Skateboarding! Stay away from that
:41:50. > :41:55.if you are playing tennis. But other sports, I think it is good. I think

:42:13. > :42:17.the three-time world champion and squash, legendary Yorkshireman.
:42:18. > :42:50.There is nobody fitter in this whole place. Unless Andy Murray is here!
:42:51. > :43:00.Good move. He has to do that more often. He has a tendency of staying
:43:01. > :43:05.back on the baseline, getting a few nights ground strokes are not
:43:06. > :43:10.getting into this area. From this area, use the height. It is much
:43:11. > :43:34.easier to pass. His wingspan is amazing.
:43:35. > :43:42.In Stuttgart last week, Del Potro made a semifinal, the first grass
:43:43. > :43:54.court semifinal since Wimbledon in the Murray year of 2013.
:43:55. > :43:59.Beat Grigor Dimitrov last week. Millman of Australia and Gilles

:44:02. > :44:22.that. Did you like that sound from the
:44:23. > :44:26.crowd with that big crosscourt forehand? It was a lovely murmur
:44:27. > :44:29.from the crowd. They loved that. I think one of them was Jeremy
:44:30. > :44:38.Clarkson. He is still giggling about it. It was one of the great
:44:39. > :44:41.forehands. Jeremy, bless him, he did a lovely interview with John
:44:42. > :44:45.Inverdale. He is the first thing I read on a Sunday morning, I think it
:44:46. > :44:53.is lovely, that is tennis is hopeless. He was happy to admit as
:44:54. > :44:59.much. -- but his tennis is hopeless. Del Potro smiling, mentally, when
:45:00. > :45:03.you place an view like Isner, sometimes you know you will just be
:45:04. > :45:07.walking back and forth like windscreen wipers, you will not hits
:45:08. > :45:14.the ball for three or four points at a time. You have got to mentally
:45:15. > :45:18.stay ready in case you somehow get an opportunity, but it might be in
:45:19. > :45:23.the tie-break, which most of Isner pits matches tend to go to. But you

:46:03. > :46:08.Suddenly back to 30-30, and a forehand from John Isner on the 30-
:46:09. > :46:12.0.4. We have the information from
:46:13. > :46:16.Hawk-Eye that it was in. Did he challenge it? He asked the umpire, I
:46:17. > :46:22.can't believe he did not challenge it. It looked on from here when he
:46:23. > :46:27.hits it. This is where the case normally comes, let's see if Del
:46:28. > :46:35.Potro can get his racket on it. -- where the ace macro normally comes.
:46:36. > :46:41.30-30 to a server like Isner, that is just bread and butter. Who cares?
:46:42. > :47:10.You does not think he is ever going to lose a service game.
:47:11. > :47:22.Had to work for it. A stronghold, we are really getting to the money end
:47:23. > :47:26.of this first round match. There was a moment in that rally when you
:47:27. > :47:32.thought, Isner, Gethin. That is the one thing that a succession of
:47:33. > :47:35.coaches and advisers have said. He finished his last year at number 11
:47:36. > :47:41.in the world, he is doing lots of things right. At sometimes using
:47:42. > :47:47.colleges get in there, use your height, your wingspan. -- but
:47:48. > :47:52.sometimes you think, get in there. At least he will have got confidence
:47:53. > :47:56.in that last service game, he made three or four really good returns,
:47:57. > :48:01.got the ball back in play. Do that once or twice in the tie-breaker,
:48:02. > :48:07.maybe you can take this? It looked like he finally read a couple of
:48:08. > :48:12.Serbs. Anticipating a tie-breaker? I sometimes wonder, should this be
:48:13. > :48:16.best off five or best of seven? We will play up to three games all and
:48:17. > :48:21.then a tie-break. It has been proven by research that people watch close
:48:22. > :48:27.at the end of a set, and more people watch at the end of a set. Best of
:48:28. > :48:33.seven, tie-break at 3-3 in each set, discussed? That would change the
:48:34. > :48:36.face of tennis a bit exclamation the first 35 for 40 minutes between
:48:37. > :48:51.these guys on a quick surface is predict double. It really is. That's
:48:52. > :49:00.-- is predictable. She is a former Grand Slam winner, Anne Jones.
:49:01. > :49:06.Normally she would be at Edgbaston, they have done so much there to
:49:07. > :49:09.build up. It is a wonderful club at Edgbaston Priory, regards to Nicky
:49:10. > :49:16.Fallows and the team up there. They have done so which to improve it
:49:17. > :49:17.over the. Great venue now. -- done so much to improve it over the
:49:18. > :49:56.years. Was a point. You can see that Isner
:49:57. > :50:07.was trying to get in there, but Del Potro's length in that rally was
:50:08. > :50:10.fantastic. -- what a point. Del Potro is much more comfortable at
:50:11. > :50:24.the back of the courts than the front. Much happier there.
:50:25. > :50:34.I went to work tension John Isner has in his racket? It is like a
:50:35. > :50:36.hammock. -- I wonder what tension. It sounds so soft, it is like a
:50:37. > :50:58.trampoline, unbelievable. I was talking to a string of the
:50:59. > :51:08.other day and they said that tensions are coming down and the
:51:09. > :51:12.rackets. -- I was talking to a stringer. The players want a higher
:51:13. > :51:29.launch angle, which you get if it is strong more loosely.
:51:30. > :51:35.Polyester strings are so powerful these days, but you have to hits it

:51:54. > :52:04.Very nicely done. Good technique. A very nice volley. Shot a couple of
:52:05. > :52:10.backhand volleys earlier. I thought he was going to get passed on this
:52:11. > :52:14.one, Del Potro is perhaps still not really comfortable. Good technique.
:52:15. > :52:40.Very nice volley. Nothing wrong with that.
:52:41. > :52:46.Would have liked to have made that one. Anything over the net might
:52:47. > :52:52.have tested Del Potro, but it is not to be. It is a tie-break. UMPIRE:
:52:53. > :52:57.Both players will receive one additional challenge. They have
:52:58. > :53:02.played four tie-breaks in the five previous matches, three have been
:53:03. > :53:06.won by Del Potro. 4-1 is the head-to-head between them. They have
:53:07. > :54:01.not played since 2013, Del Potro has been out.
:54:02. > :54:50.Mis-hits return. Del Potro really not working well at the baseline.
:54:51. > :55:00.Did you see how high that bounced?! The ball girls saw it, it was about
:55:01. > :55:03.head height, maybe over. That is a dangerous position when Isner is
:55:04. > :55:11.playing. You have to pay attention, for sure. Just so relaxing and
:55:12. > :55:23.fluid. You could serve like that for hours and I was not get tired. --
:55:24. > :55:25.for hours and hours. Just the forehand error of the mis-hit return
:55:26. > :56:17.from Del Potro the difference. That was an important point for Del
:56:18. > :56:22.Potro to win. 5-1 would have been way to ambient far comeback against
:56:23. > :56:31.John Isner with that big serve. -- would have been away too far.
:56:32. > :56:39.What a fine career John Isner has had. Started a bit later than some
:56:40. > :56:40.because of his college education in the States. But over 300 wins on
:56:41. > :57:24.tour. Two forehand errors in this
:57:25. > :57:29.tie-breaker. But is his banker shot, and they were both comfortable.
:57:30. > :57:33.Can't afford to do that against Isner, not against anybody, but
:57:34. > :57:39.certainly when you are unlikely to get too many point is from the Isner
:57:40. > :58:13.serve. And our plate. Isner closing in. -- an hou -- an hour played.
:58:14. > :58:23.UMPIRE: Game and first set, Isner. John Isner brings a lot of know-how
:58:24. > :58:29.to the court, especially in tie-breaks. He gets to a tie-break,
:58:30. > :58:37.it turns to a shoot out. He knows he is likely to get two or three free
:58:38. > :58:45.points. 333 tie-break victories to 202 losses Isner. 115 tie-break wins
:58:46. > :58:48.and 92 losses for Del Potro, excluding Davis Cup. But those
:58:49. > :58:54.ratios, I think it might be the best in the game for John Isner. He
:58:55. > :58:58.definitely plays the most in the game, he plays tie-break as almost
:58:59. > :59:02.every Sethi plays. He is so used about, because his record breaking
:59:03. > :59:07.serve is not good. You think you must just get used to tie breakers
:59:08. > :59:10.and it is no big deal. It is almost just like he does not get any more
:59:11. > :59:16.nervous in a tie-breaker, he plays them all the time, he is used to it,
:59:17. > :59:20.bread-and-butter for him. He has the longest fingers I have ever seen. He
:59:21. > :59:27.must have an enormous grip. Those strings he is using are very, very
:59:28. > :59:32.follow-up power. The level of string tension, the more power, perhaps the
:59:33. > :59:36.less control. But the lower you string these strings, the more spin
:59:37. > :59:42.you get. That is presumably if you have enough racket speed to dip. If
:59:43. > :59:48.I hits that it would go in the back fence. That is the difference. But
:59:49. > :59:52.when you sit and watch it, particularly Derek Courtside, the
:59:53. > :59:57.amount of these forehands, so many times you think it has to go out, it
:59:58. > :00:03.does not, it rips at the last moment. Roger Federer, so many times
:00:04. > :00:06.you think it will go out and it dips six inches in, no problem. It is
:00:07. > :00:15.amazing what they have done with the string technique, what they have
:00:16. > :00:18.done with the technology. Amazing. We hope to see Rafa Nadal throwing
:00:19. > :00:25.his enormous top-spin around the court again. But we will see about
:00:26. > :00:44.that. He has had to pull out of this event, and Wimbledon as well.
:00:45. > :00:57.These are temporary stands here. I have to be honest. I like that, too.
:00:58. > :01:00.The stuff about maybe we should sit down, people wander around all the
:01:01. > :01:10.time when you practice, and you don't complain. Spectators are going
:01:11. > :01:13.to move around. So what? People might be shuffling in and out a
:01:14. > :01:15.little bit slower at this time in the afternoon, because lunch was
:01:16. > :02:21.good! Added lucky there with the mis-hit
:02:22. > :03:08.forehand return. -- a bit lucky. Can't believe that. That was one
:03:09. > :03:14.opportunity to get a break point, finally, in this match. Just picked
:03:15. > :03:20.the wrong option. You can see where Cole Porter is standing. He had all
:03:21. > :03:25.of that "On the other side. He is so annoyed at himself. -- all of that
:03:26. > :03:56.open court. I always enjoy Andy Murray lobbing
:03:57. > :03:58.John Isner when they play. It's like someone standing on a stepladder. It
:03:59. > :04:17.always amuses the crowd. Angela Mortimer of air in the back.
:04:18. > :04:23.Ed Jones, Mark Ochs, Roger Taylor. -- Mark Cox. Angela had also won the

:05:59. > :06:04.game that John Isner got, just a few points ago, but you see how quickly
:06:05. > :06:14.it turns. Now Del Porto with three break points. I wonder what the odds
:06:15. > :06:18.would be that still being 0- 40. Still probably 50-50 for him to
:06:19. > :06:44.hold. It could not be much certainly now. Certainly now at 15-40.
:06:45. > :06:50.He is collecting himself now. He has done thousands of targets. Use
:06:51. > :07:05.thinking, where is this one going to go? Just visualising it. He gets to
:07:06. > :07:12.0-40, works so hard, then basically doesn't touch the ball. Ridiculous.
:07:13. > :07:22.We don't actually have a speed reading on that. That was quick.
:07:23. > :07:28.Come off it! Are you having fun? Club members back here, casual
:07:29. > :07:40.players. Just off at a smaller target.
:07:41. > :08:17.Isner is thinking don't get involved in any of this fun and games. Just
:08:18. > :08:28.put his man off, there. Good work. Try anything! Now, break points
:08:29. > :09:15.again. I don't think big John is going to be too pleased about this.
:09:16. > :09:24.That is unbelievable. If you studied this and just knew exactly what the
:09:25. > :09:28.percentage was worth Isner 's favoured side was when he serves to
:09:29. > :09:32.the outside, he must have a slight favourite on one side, you would
:09:33. > :10:22.have to lean one way, and take a chance.
:10:23. > :10:34.That was nice. Lovely to watch, that. Nice change up. Very good
:10:35. > :10:44.chip, that was, from there. Not much he can do about that, Isner. Not a
:10:45. > :10:49.great deal of subtlety in this match and if there is any around, Del
:10:50. > :11:13.Potro will probably find it. And he has to.
:11:14. > :11:19.For the second time in this match, John Isner failing to challenge. Del
:11:20. > :11:27.Potro put his finger up to indicate he thought the first serve was out.
:11:28. > :11:37.It would have been ace number 18, ace number six on the game. Still
:11:38. > :11:44.can't get out of it. That's wonderful. Half a dozen aces in the
:11:45. > :11:49.game and he holds it, having saved for a points. Good game. 18 aces in
:11:50. > :11:58.the match. Where does he served his aces, where do you lean? This is
:11:59. > :12:03.just with you, John. On deuce and advantage points you have got a lean
:12:04. > :12:07.out of the backhand side and on the forehand, you go out wide. That is
:12:08. > :12:14.the majority of where he serves. Just a slight fraction early, just
:12:15. > :12:20.take a chance. Good luck. You would not have your coach in your year
:12:21. > :12:21.telling you that was the percentage, unless he is a mathematician and
:12:22. > :14:08.counting. -- in your ear. He has played very well today,
:14:09. > :14:12.Isner. He has not had many of them, but four or five, on both wings.
:14:13. > :14:53.Good work. Just trying to push off with a right

:17:00. > :17:05.spectator movement, John Lloyd says so what, but it disturbs the
:17:06. > :17:11.enjoyment of those of us who want to watch. I was a yesterday, people
:17:12. > :17:17.moving all the time during Andy Murray 's tie-breaks. Very
:17:18. > :17:20.distracting and rude. In an ideal world, people would get to their
:17:21. > :17:23.seats quickly, but when people are getting through and not getting to
:17:24. > :17:28.seats quickly enough, you should play on while they wait. The other

:17:34. > :17:39.you have to wait for three games before spectators are allowed in.

:17:43. > :17:47.is hot, sometimes you have got to wait 20 minutes before you can get
:17:48. > :17:51.your seats, and you are standing out in the sweltering sun. It is
:17:52. > :17:55.ridiculous. I had the same experience at Twickenham. England
:17:56. > :18:02.against France at the rugby. People were so busy walking across, so many
:18:03. > :18:06.people having so much to drink, I just went, forget about it. With
:18:07. > :18:13.about 20 minutes to go. It was just impossible. Slopping beer all over
:18:14. > :18:21.you. I could not keep a straight view of the game. Quite right, Liz,
:18:22. > :18:28.you keep John Luiten account. -- John Lloyd to account. His Twitter
:18:29. > :18:52.account, so that she can have a go at you directly, John. No thanks.
:18:53. > :19:35.Lost his concentration a bit there, Isner. Crowd reacted. This would be

:19:43. > :20:07.crowd and then he missed an easy forehand.
:20:08. > :20:13.That is a costly double four to go along with the forehand error. It

:26:13. > :26:29.Jonathan ERlich. ERlich and Fleming are 4-1 up in the final set.
:26:30. > :27:04.Saving face there, Colin, he will enjoy that, being a doubles man.
:27:05. > :27:13.Adrian Maneiro is playing Steve Johnson and Johnson is 1-0 up and
:27:14. > :28:17.into the final set. UMPIRE: game, Isner. 3-3. Memories
:28:18. > :28:23.of our form finally, Andy Roddick against Ivo Karlovic. That went the
:28:24. > :28:28.distance. -- of a former final here. We thought we would have a couple
:28:29. > :28:36.more rallies and that is all we would have. Some clean aces but some
:28:37. > :28:38.decent points, just a lot of, obviously, just one shot points,
:28:39. > :29:23.with the serve. David O'Leary down there with Jeremy
:29:24. > :29:25.Clarkson. I hardly noticed him. From one of the great arsenal team. What
:29:26. > :30:35.am I thinking? -- Arsenal teams. A poor shot. I don't quite know what
:30:36. > :30:42.he was trying, just to slide down the line, I suppose. It was not a
:30:43. > :30:53.percentage shot, for sure. And 15-30 you do not want to have one treble
:30:54. > :31:34.of your racket. -- have one dribble off.
:31:35. > :31:43.Andrew, occasionally you see glimpses of that Del Potro forehand.
:31:44. > :31:49.When he won that US Open it could perhaps have been the most feared
:31:50. > :31:52.shot in the game at that stage. It was just immense. He could hit eight
:31:53. > :32:00.for any part of the court, he would hit winner after winner. It was a
:32:01. > :32:07.frightening forehand. Look at that, quite a big backswing, but he has a
:32:08. > :32:11.beautiful hip rotation and the follow-through extends through. It
:32:12. > :32:15.was an awesome shot. Still very good now, but I don't know if it has lost
:32:16. > :32:18.a bit of pace or maybe his confidence, but you do not think of
:32:19. > :32:24.it as much, maybe because we have not seen him as much, but it was
:32:25. > :32:28.amazing in his time. Abel forget he was a semifinalist at the French
:32:29. > :32:33.Open of the same year, 2009 -- people forget. That was the year
:32:34. > :32:38.that Federer finally completed his set of Grand Slam championships. Rob
:32:39. > :32:45.so dimming defeated Rafa Nadal for the first loss ever the French Open.
:32:46. > :32:50.-- Robin so dimming defeated. He lost to Djokovic in a magnificent
:32:51. > :32:58.five set semifinal at Wimbledon. Andy played an amazing match in the
:32:59. > :33:06.Olympics against Federer. 24-22. Something like that, incredible. He
:33:07. > :33:11.does not mind going the distance. He had all four of these wrist
:33:12. > :33:15.surgeries at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Three on the
:33:16. > :33:16.left, one on the right and back on tour. He still has some tennis left
:33:17. > :33:37.in him. Too good, that left forehand.
:33:38. > :33:42.It looked like Isner was decently placed. Down the middle of the
:33:43. > :33:47.court. Did not give him a jungle to work with, but he just hit that
:33:48. > :34:51.around the edge of the ball. -- did not give him much to work with.
:34:52. > :35:03.How did he squeeze that one?! Awesome shot. He keeps giving
:35:04. > :35:04.himself these chances. Back at 30-30 again. Fantastic shot from this
:35:05. > :35:25.position. That is the area where Isner went
:35:26. > :35:32.over as well. I hope he is just having a rest. He is not moving at
:35:33. > :35:37.all. Hopefully he is OK. I saw him extend his knee at the back of the
:35:38. > :35:42.Centre Court one-year. That looked very uncomfortable. This one, the
:35:43. > :35:53.left side, hip? APPLAUSE
:35:54. > :35:59.Hip flexor? He has done a lot of chasing on that
:36:00. > :36:17.line green grass at the back. Internal abductor, maybe?
:36:18. > :36:27.Del Potro had a look at that forehands and went, I am not chasing
:36:28. > :36:33.bad. He is definitely feeling it. -- I am not chasing fast.
:36:34. > :36:41.It is all very well letting a return game go while you recover, but you
:36:42. > :36:45.certainly can't let your service game go. 4-4 in the second set.
:36:46. > :37:00.First game to Isner. First one of the day and verse one
:37:01. > :37:43.of this match, the drop shot. The first double faults can
:37:44. > :37:46.sometimes be an indicator of injury, not really pushing up on that leg.
:37:47. > :38:29.We will keep an eye on that. A little opening here, possibly, for
:38:30. > :39:03.Isner. He will have to get a second serve to go out here.
:39:04. > :39:19.Not again! What a point for that to happen! Had to volley into the open
:39:20. > :39:24.court, too. Not that much luck going for him in this match. It is virtual
:39:25. > :39:29.match point. The first break point he has faced.
:39:30. > :39:48.He has had them all this set. Great stretch from John Isner, who
:39:49. > :39:54.gets the break at his first opportunity. Isn't that ironic?
:39:55. > :39:58.Untypical. Del Potro had all the chances up until that point, John
:39:59. > :40:06.Isner will serve for the match. I might have misled you with talking
:40:07. > :40:11.about one of those doubles matches, I thought my computer said it was
:40:12. > :40:17.deep into the third set, it is actually one set all. The trainer
:40:18. > :40:27.comes on to look at Del Potro, who at 30-32-macro games ago tried to
:40:28. > :40:33.change direction -- at 30-30 two games ago. He did not do the splits,
:40:34. > :40:48.but it was unexpected. Deciding not to take treatment. No need to assess
:40:49. > :40:56.at this point. Might just take the view that he could be four points
:40:57. > :41:02.away from going out. Doesn't want to get cold while it gets treated. Del
:41:03. > :41:08.Potro has played well in this match, both have played well. It has been
:41:09. > :41:12.an exceptional match. This style of tennis, which is very powerful and
:41:13. > :41:20.lots of big shots, but both players in good form. Del Potro has been a
:41:21. > :41:25.bit unlucky to be in this position. But when you play against John
:41:26. > :41:29.Isner, you may get one chance a set, if you are lucky. If you don't take
:41:30. > :41:53.it, not that you have much chance, that you do not end up winning.
:41:54. > :42:05.You could observe itch versus Marin Cilic, Serbia versus Croatia, the
:42:06. > :42:12.match that follows -- yank the Tipsarevic versus Marin Cilic.
:42:13. > :42:35.Number 25 seals it for John Isner. Excellent first set tie-breaker, the
:42:36. > :42:40.big man is through. And we hope very much that Juan Martin Del Potro is
:42:41. > :42:50.not injured, because it is great to have this champion back in the game.
:42:51. > :42:53.Hitting the ball pretty cleanly. Isner versus Giles Miller, who put a
:42:54. > :43:04.James Ward of Britain in the first round, that'll be the second-round
:43:05. > :43:10.match. -- Isner versus Gilles Muller. Isner is so dangerous, Del
:43:11. > :43:13.Potro played well but it got its rackets on the ball two times out of
:43:14. > :43:19.seven break points and barely touched it. What else can you do? He
:43:20. > :43:25.is dangerous, takes chances, comes in, service like that. A nasty
:43:26. > :43:31.person to play against on this surface or any, for that matter.
:43:32. > :43:37.Good quality tennis, very good standard from both players. 31 years
:43:38. > :43:44.of age now. Understanding his game, I feel, as well now as ever, and how
:43:45. > :43:47.to get the best out of it. Fourth round at the Australian Open this
:43:48. > :43:56.year and at Roland Garros, where he lost to Andy Murray. Playing Gilles
:43:57. > :44:03.Muller next. More tennis to come on Centre Court. Murray tomorrow. Janko
:44:04. > :44:08.Tipsarevic versus Marin Cilic coming up on this court.
:44:09. > :44:12.Let's catch up with our winner with John Inverdale.
:44:13. > :44:18.Many congratulations. Do you ever feel sorry for the guys who have to
:44:19. > :44:21.phase your serve? No, I can't feel sorry, if I start feeling sorry for
:44:22. > :44:26.them it will not be a good thing for me. Obviously my serve is without a
:44:27. > :44:32.doubt my best weapon, it gets me out of a lot of jams, it's got me out of
:44:33. > :44:38.a lot of jams today. I am very happy to get through on such a nice day
:44:39. > :44:42.year, moving on. 25 aces in two sets, a phenomenal tally. Is that
:44:43. > :44:48.what you aim for when you head out at the start of play? Yeah. When I
:44:49. > :44:54.hit a serve, I don't want it to come back. Luckily for me, I am able to
:44:55. > :44:58.hit lots of aces. I did that today. It is my first match since the
:44:59. > :45:02.French Open, very happy. You got to the fourth round in Australia and
:45:03. > :45:05.did well at Roland Garros, do you feel you are coming to a point where
:45:06. > :45:13.we knew will be in the very late stages of the Grand Slams now? --
:45:14. > :45:17.where you will be? I have made the late stages of my last few Grand
:45:18. > :45:23.Slams. I am playing less event 's and focus on Picton stop this one is
:45:24. > :45:28.obviously very big, the one NA few weeks is pretty big well, I will be
:45:29. > :45:34.ready for it. You look in good shape, thank you for talking to us.
:45:35. > :45:39.SUE BARKER: Well played, this shot won this match for him, big on a big
:45:40. > :45:44.serving from the big man from America, too much for Juan Martin
:45:45. > :45:47.Del Potro. We hope there are no injuries for him after all the
:45:48. > :45:52.scares over the last couple. John Isner goes to his opening match at
:45:53. > :45:59.the Eagle to the. We have a few minutes left on BBC Two, there is
:46:00. > :46:02.one more match to go, Marin Cilic against Janko Tipsarevic, are the
:46:03. > :46:06.red button. Before we go, we can round up some
:46:07. > :46:10.of the stories of the day, including a big win for Kyle Edmund on Centre
:46:11. > :46:15.Court up against Gilles Simon, ranked number 18 in the world. Kyle
:46:16. > :46:20.just relished his time at Centre Court. It was a very disturbing
:46:21. > :46:25.setting display from Gilles Simon, who could not serve at all, double
:46:26. > :46:32.faults all over the place. Edmonds took advantage, a great win for him
:46:33. > :46:37.is it - one in the third set. -- Edmund took advantage. He faces Paul
:46:38. > :46:41.Henry Matthew, who puts out Dan Evans of Britain on court but one.
:46:42. > :46:49.Some wonderful rallies enjoyed by the fans on Court One. Evans lost it
:46:50. > :46:55.in three. 6-3 in the third set. Mathieu goes through and will face
:46:56. > :47:00.Kyle Edmund tomorrow. This match was to be completed and
:47:01. > :47:07.it went to Milos Raonic, the Canadian who put out Snicko gears.
:47:08. > :47:12.Courteous through in two double faults to lose his serve at four
:47:13. > :47:18.games all, Raonic took advantage. He is through, to the delight of his
:47:19. > :47:23.coach John McEnroe, who is courtside with him for the next three weeks.
:47:24. > :47:30.There he is, he will be delighted to see Raonic go through. He did not
:47:31. > :47:38.look delighted! It was a good win for Raonic. That was probably the
:47:39. > :47:43.trickiest open of all? Absolutely, Kyrgios is a threat to win Wimbledon
:47:44. > :47:49.or read least go very deep. That is the sort of match that John would
:47:50. > :47:56.like to see Raonic win more often. It was serve, serve, serve. He
:47:57. > :48:03.played a couple of good approach shots to get up 15-30, Kyrgios
:48:04. > :48:09.inexplicably capitulated, including two doubles, thank you very much.
:48:10. > :48:13.Often you don't necessarily want to have to beat an opponent by playing
:48:14. > :48:20.better than them, you just intimidate them mentally, getting
:48:21. > :48:24.their head stop -- get in their heads, and have them give you an
:48:25. > :48:29.forced errors. That is almost the most satisfying way to win. Looking
:48:30. > :48:35.back to Kyle Edmund's victory against Gilles Simon, he could not
:48:36. > :48:41.seem to serve and his game fell apart, it is when you do not serve,
:48:42. > :48:44.it is the key shot? It has been pretty windy today, which perhaps
:48:45. > :48:53.exacerbated any problems that Simon has had recently. The ball toss does
:48:54. > :48:57.not go in the proper place every time, if it does not you lose
:48:58. > :49:04.confidence in your serve and you are in big trouble. We have a few
:49:05. > :49:06.minutes left, there is one more match to come, Janko Tipsarevic
:49:07. > :49:11.against the former champion, Marin Cilic, that'll be on the red. For
:49:12. > :49:14.the last few minutes we will look back to yesterday, Andy Murray and
:49:15. > :49:21.some of his play against Nicolas Mahut.
:49:22. > :49:26.Lovely sunshine for a start yesterday, he said that this would
:49:27. > :49:33.be a tough match for him because Mahut comes at you, he had so many
:49:34. > :49:38.chances and he had a break-up serve in the second set, so Murray had to
:49:39. > :49:41.work very hard. This was a great win for Andy, because Mahut has won a
:49:42. > :49:49.whole bunch of doubles tournaments this year. And he won the event on
:49:50. > :49:56.Monday in Holland. He is at the top of his game, as confident as he can
:49:57. > :50:06.be, was hitting backhands and forehands, winners all over the
:50:07. > :50:11.place. He was a real threat. Mahut makes you work hard, he has played
:50:12. > :50:16.so well on the grass courts, he has won four titles playing on grass.
:50:17. > :50:20.With Mahut being 4-1 up in the second set, it proves what a good
:50:21. > :50:26.match player Murray is, he switches into another gear when it matters,
:50:27. > :50:34.wins the big points. No question. Here's a great competitor. He has
:50:35. > :50:38.maybe the best return of serve in tennis, certainly on this surface,
:50:39. > :50:44.his return of serve is better than anyone else. He put so many balls
:50:45. > :50:50.into play and you think, well, 130 mph, balls skidding off the court,
:50:51. > :50:55.sometimes kicking, yet still he puts 80 or 90% into play. It is a
:50:56. > :51:01.testament to his hand eye coordination and quickness. Nobody
:51:02. > :51:10.wants to play a Andy Murray on this surface. And having Lendl back, they
:51:11. > :51:15.work so well, they have a great sense of humour, they enjoy working
:51:16. > :51:18.together and he has great respect for Lendl? It is always great to
:51:19. > :51:23.have a great champion in your corner, someone who you can depend
:51:24. > :51:31.on to say something that is important, not just chattering,
:51:32. > :51:35.saying everything they know. This is pertinent to Andy's particular
:51:36. > :51:42.situation, so I think it will give him a lot of confidence. We talked
:51:43. > :51:44.about the serve yesterday, anti-change some things technically
:51:45. > :51:51.and it was effective at crucial times. -- Andy changed some things.
:51:52. > :51:57.He spoke to coaches and it is the shot we have been talking about,
:51:58. > :52:01.particularly the second serve. The first serve has always been a
:52:02. > :52:06.weapon, the great champions are always trying to improve and they
:52:07. > :52:14.never stop learning? That is the hope. Andy is a perfectionist and
:52:15. > :52:18.always tries to improve little areas, and the serve is still
:52:19. > :52:23.imported in today puts back row game, especially on the servers.
:52:24. > :52:27.This is what it means as far as matches being completed. We finally
:52:28. > :52:33.got so matches completed after the first two days. Murray against
:52:34. > :52:36.Alijaz Bedene, the British number one against the British number two.
:52:37. > :52:40.That will be on Centre Court tomorrow, it is the first Britain
:52:41. > :52:47.since Murray -- that Murray has played since he met Tim Henman ten
:52:48. > :52:50.years ago. Mathieu macro against Edmonds, we help that'll be back on
:52:51. > :52:55.Centre Court. Yet quoted Sarah Vega against Marin Gilligan is denied.
:52:56. > :53:01.Onto the bottom half of the draw, we have lost Wawrinka, that is a big
:53:02. > :53:10.loss, but Raonic is looking very dangerous. A chance for Tomic,
:53:11. > :53:17.maybe? Tomic and Verdasco, tough to call. Tomic enjoys playing on grass.
:53:18. > :53:25.Gilles Muller, another player nobody wants to play on this surface.
:53:26. > :53:29.Vesely, a big server. Thank you very much to Peter. We
:53:30. > :53:34.will be on the red button in just a moment for that other match. The
:53:35. > :53:40.highlights of the year rose is on now, and then tonight at 7:35pm and
:53:41. > :53:45.tomorrow at 1pm it is the Aegon Championships, I think we are
:53:46. > :53:47.actually on it 1:30pm tomorrow. That is it from us, what a day for Kyle
:53:48. > :53:52.Edmund. Goodbye.
