:00:08. > :00:12.Every once in awhile sport throws up a fixture that fires the

:00:13. > :00:14.imagination. To day on BBC television, we have such a match.

:00:15. > :01:20.Are you ready? It is time to walk the walk. England

:01:21. > :01:28.versus Wales? No, Murray against Bedene, England's very own battle

:01:29. > :01:33.royal. We have our own Battle of Britain to look forward to. Just a

:01:34. > :01:41.few moments ago, Andy Murray, the British number one coming on to play

:01:42. > :01:47.Alianza Bedene. To the delight of the fans. We have had showers, and

:01:48. > :01:53.more are forecast. At the moment, the players are caught, hopefully,

:01:54. > :02:00.they will be on for some time. That was just a few moments ago, we have

:02:01. > :02:10.ready had dramatic news to day. Kyle Edmund, already through to the

:02:11. > :02:16.quarterfinals. His opponent Paul Henry Mathieu foldout. We are

:02:17. > :02:23.guaranteed a British quarterfinalist. Jiri Vesely, he

:02:24. > :02:31.lost in qualifying to Kevin Anderson can in after Alexandr Dolgopolov

:02:32. > :02:38.Phil Dowd. Here he is facing the third seed, Milos Raonic. Roberto

:02:39. > :02:43.Bautista Agut up against Donald Young. That is the order of play,

:02:44. > :02:45.weather permitting. The radar not looking too hopeful. Talking about

:02:46. > :02:52.England versus Wales in the football. A great sporting venue at

:02:53. > :02:56.Queen's Club, there was an international played between England

:02:57. > :03:06.and Wales played on the 18th of March, 1895. 1-1. 13,000 people in

:03:07. > :03:09.attendance. 1-1 is not good enough for England, not after the other

:03:10. > :03:15.night. I am with Andrew Castle and John Lloyd to watch Andy Murray. He

:03:16. > :03:19.will be pleased to be out on the court, with the forecast, don't want

:03:20. > :03:22.to be getting behind in matches. Extremely impressive the other day,

:03:23. > :03:28.footwork was urgent, look like was the turning back to the grass court

:03:29. > :03:34.after a fantastic clay-court season. When you go through the whole

:03:35. > :03:38.clay-court season, winning the Italian Open, the final of the

:03:39. > :03:45.French, semifinals in Monte Carlo. Only lost to Djokovic, and beats

:03:46. > :03:47.Novak. Coming in with a great deal of confidence. You would expect he

:03:48. > :03:53.would put the British number two away. You know something, not easy

:03:54. > :03:58.to play countrymen, even if he comes via Slovenia. Very supportive of

:03:59. > :04:03.Aljaz Bedene coming into the British game, playing Davis Cup, if that had

:04:04. > :04:08.been allowed, of course it isn't. I like that attitude, saying other

:04:09. > :04:13.guys at the respond, understand why they are threatened. No love lost on

:04:14. > :04:18.the court though. It happened in the past with Greg rejects key. He has

:04:19. > :04:22.lived in the UK since 2007. We know a lot about the British number one,

:04:23. > :04:27.what about the British never two? John Inverdale caught up with him

:04:28. > :04:30.before the match. British showdown, first time you

:04:31. > :04:36.played Andy Murray on a big stage like this? In front of a British

:04:37. > :04:41.audience. Great occasion. I hope the people enjoy it. I will give my

:04:42. > :04:46.best, see what happens. I would try to introduce myself to the British

:04:47. > :04:49.public. Let's see what happens. You have been on the circuit for a

:04:50. > :04:54.number of years, watching Andy achieved all he has achieved. What

:04:55. > :04:59.is your assessment of him as a player, also somebody carrying

:05:00. > :05:05.British tennis on his shoulders? I think we can all learn, really

:05:06. > :05:12.important to fight. Nothing is given, basically. He is one of the

:05:13. > :05:20.greatest fighters. We are lucky to have him. Are you excited about a

:05:21. > :05:25.match like Andy Murray at Queen's Club? Does that get you really

:05:26. > :05:32.excited? Every match, you go in, wanting to win. If you play someone

:05:33. > :05:38.like Andy, in a way, even more important to show your best. If you

:05:39. > :05:46.do not, he is one of the best players, likely to kill you. Going

:05:47. > :05:52.to be important, to play well. I am definitely going to be pumped. Play

:05:53. > :05:57.your best, looking forward to it. We are all looking forward to it. I

:05:58. > :06:01.agree with Aljaz, we are pleased to have Andy Murray at the top of the

:06:02. > :06:05.game, putting the pride back in British tennis. As far as Bedene is

:06:06. > :06:14.concerned, how can you at Murray? That is the problem. Compact player.

:06:15. > :06:18.Where are the weapons? -- how can you hurt Murray? He doesn't have a

:06:19. > :06:24.shot which is a weapon. Good matchplay player. I was in the

:06:25. > :06:27.players' lounge, he was having lunch, I think he thought it was

:06:28. > :06:34.going to be raining. Tucking into a decent portion of food. Last meal! I

:06:35. > :06:38.cannot see how he can hurt Murray. Particularly how Murray played in

:06:39. > :06:43.the first round, looking so good. He is a good competitor. He is, a good

:06:44. > :06:47.season, good run at the French Open, winning a couple of rounds. Should

:06:48. > :06:53.not hurt Djokovic, losing in straight sets. Has not beat a player

:06:54. > :06:58.in the top ten. His main weapon is the speed of the racket arm on his

:06:59. > :07:04.serve. Difficulties pick-up. Comes in at a low angle, he can do damage.

:07:05. > :07:08.Coming into the match with Andy Murray, nothing to lose. Enjoy

:07:09. > :07:15.yourself. Beat the Frenchman in the first round, in the 20s. Just go

:07:16. > :07:19.correct, win the first three or four service games. You never know. This

:07:20. > :07:24.guy is not here to make up the numbers, a proper player, 45 in the

:07:25. > :07:29.world last year. He does not think he has had a great year. Bounty 58

:07:30. > :07:35.in the rankings. He's not here to make up the numbers, he do damage.

:07:36. > :07:39.Quite cool, damp, more showers expected, could be on and off, a bit

:07:40. > :07:44.of a leveller. For top players, tough. Leveller ranked players do

:07:45. > :07:50.not mind situations like this. The court a little bit greasy. With the

:07:51. > :07:56.weather we had. Even though Andy won the last match, a couple of times

:07:57. > :07:59.I'm sure his footing. If Bedene gets off to a good start, you never know,

:08:00. > :08:03.you don't mind it if you are a leveller ranked player. We have seen

:08:04. > :08:10.the loss of Stan Wawrinka, Richard Gasquet. Murray serving well, be

:08:11. > :08:15.more aggressive. The Ivan Lendl factor, he was more aggressive with

:08:16. > :08:20.him. He may be again. Ivan Lendl will tell you what if you are

:08:21. > :08:25.naughty boy. You will listen. Interesting relationship. When you

:08:26. > :08:29.employ somebody who is an authority figure in your professional life,

:08:30. > :08:34.very peculiar. He will tell the truth, JB del Garda has done a good

:08:35. > :08:44.job. The new team in fashion, Murray is playing for them. -- Jamie

:08:45. > :08:50.Delgado. You know Tim free-macro very well, he has done really well.

:08:51. > :08:54.He has embraced the job. He will look forward to being next to Ivan

:08:55. > :08:59.Lendl, being a sponge. And what this man is about. Jamie Delgado will be

:09:00. > :09:04.around for a long time, what a person to learn from, Ivan Lendl.

:09:05. > :09:10.Talk about how long they will be together, could be 18 weeks. Ivan

:09:11. > :09:14.Lendl said, 18 weeks? Have not heard about that. Negotiating. At least

:09:15. > :09:18.they few successful weeks on the grass, at the least. John is on his

:09:19. > :09:23.way to the commentary box, to join Andrew Cotter.

:09:24. > :09:26.COMMENTATOR: Should be very exciting, Andy Murray against Aljaz

:09:27. > :09:41.Bedene. It is a balance, the coaching. Ivan Lendl, Jamie Delgado,

:09:42. > :09:42.his regular hitting partner. He will be the strong favourite, getting

:09:43. > :10:35.under way in this first set. The forecast, a bit of drizzle for

:10:36. > :10:36.the next hour. Nothing at the moment. Can play through a little

:10:37. > :11:03.bit of drizzle. Tight first round match, Murray had

:11:04. > :12:29.against Nicolas Metge. That is too easily put away. Murray

:12:30. > :12:47.just feelings shoulder, shake head. Four. First game, break point for

:12:48. > :13:22.Bedene. Everyone wondering what is up with

:13:23. > :14:25.the right shoulder. Certainly worth asking the question.

:14:26. > :15:03.Just wide. Does not look entirely comfortable,

:15:04. > :15:05.Murray. Bedene looks comfortable, footwork excellent. Preparation. OK

:15:06. > :15:31.going slice to slice with Murray. A bit more zip on serve. I was going

:15:32. > :15:51.to say, that is pretty good in these conditions.

:15:52. > :16:03.Murray eventually holds. He gets there in the end. Worrying signs for

:16:04. > :16:07.Bedene. One of the major talking points about Bedene over the last

:16:08. > :16:13.few years has been his citizenship. He successfully applied for the

:16:14. > :16:18.United Kingdom but unable to represent Great Britain in the Davis

:16:19. > :16:24.Cup. Also the Olympics. That process has been ongoing. His latest appeal

:16:25. > :16:31.failed in March. It has affected his season for the he says he is out of

:16:32. > :16:36.sorts. Just after the latest appeal failed. -- his season. He is talking

:16:37. > :16:39.about going to be Court of Arbitration for Sport but it is a

:16:40. > :16:47.very expensive procedure. He is in limbo at the moment. He has

:16:48. > :17:05.certainly made an impressive start to this match.

:17:06. > :17:17.Just reaction from Murray. Quite casual. He should have put that one

:17:18. > :17:22.away full to this one was such an easy overhead. He hits it straight

:17:23. > :18:04.down the middle. -- put that one away.

:18:05. > :18:11.Not massive firepower. Up against just about the best return in the

:18:12. > :18:39.game. A good, clean start by Bedene. It is

:18:40. > :18:41.impressive. Nice serving by him. He has not missed a first serve yet. In

:18:42. > :19:22.the corners. He is one of the very best in the

:19:23. > :19:28.game at that. He always disguises it so well. That is the thing. You

:19:29. > :19:29.cannot pick it. As soon as the ball left the racket, they knew that was

:19:30. > :20:27.over his head. A marvellous shot! Marry untroubled by that shoulder.

:20:28. > :20:39.His ground strokes might have adjusted. He might loosen up.

:20:40. > :21:31.You could see his reaction, Bedene. He hit a very good serve, a body

:21:32. > :21:35.serve. The ball comes back to him so quickly, he did not have time to

:21:36. > :21:43.take a swing. A good serve as he gets ready to prepare, right at his

:21:44. > :21:50.feet but he hardly moves. He is serving well. The problem is, he is

:21:51. > :21:52.still struggling to hold his serve. He has hardly missed a first serve

:21:53. > :22:37.and he is varying it 12. -- it well. So, Bedene, a lot of grafting but he

:22:38. > :22:44.eventually holds it. As you say, John, that was with 91% first serve

:22:45. > :22:52.landing. Just a demonstration of the size of the task that Bedene has.

:22:53. > :22:56.We will keep an eye on the freedom of movement of Murray and his

:22:57. > :23:08.service game now. It is all good now. No clutching of

:23:09. > :24:35.the shoulder. That was a wicked slice. He thought

:24:36. > :24:40.the first ball was out and did not play it till the last fraction. He

:24:41. > :24:47.managed to poke the ball back somehow. He thought he had already

:24:48. > :25:07.won the point. This is just vicious. That is horrible to play against.

:25:08. > :25:16.That was a more commanding service game from Andy Murray. Just talking

:25:17. > :25:22.about the state of affairs in British men's tennis. There are four

:25:23. > :25:27.inside the top 100 with Bedene the second of 58. He has slipped back in

:25:28. > :25:36.little bit this season. Kyle Edmonds is 85p will improve a bit. Dan Evans

:25:37. > :25:42.is 92. -- it is 85. He will improve a bit. That is why we have a chance

:25:43. > :25:52.with Andy Murray playing a British opponent. We go back to 2006 with

:25:53. > :25:59.Andy Murray playing Tim Henman. It seldom happens. It will happen in

:26:00. > :26:04.the next round as well. It is good to see. He has someone like Andy

:26:05. > :26:09.Murray to live up to. The bar is very high. The British players below

:26:10. > :26:13.him, the Davis Cup has been big as well. Fighting for places in the

:26:14. > :26:17.team was admitted as an exciting time right now for British tennis.

:26:18. > :26:23.The women's game is going well as well. The men's game with Andy

:26:24. > :26:27.Murray has been outstanding. It's sort of raises the bar. When you get

:26:28. > :26:31.that group, they are all pushing each other. That is when you get

:26:32. > :26:40.players starting to break through. It is competition. It is not France.

:26:41. > :26:46.We have to see what we had in the last few years. If we were France,

:26:47. > :26:53.we would be very happy. Or Spain for that matter.

:26:54. > :26:59.He must be sorely tempted to stand up and call for order, John Burke

:27:00. > :27:22.oh. -- Bercow. Again, Bedene court that once

:27:23. > :27:24.weekly. With the pace, it was 109. Not a bad serve. Look what he has to

:27:25. > :27:45.put up with. Anything that is in the right

:27:46. > :27:52.hitting area for Murray, he needs to big his serve up a bit. The accuracy

:27:53. > :28:07.is important, where you place the service. If it is in the Murray

:28:08. > :28:33.hitting zone, you can forget it. He was lucky to get away with that.

:28:34. > :28:49.That was an impressive point. Bedene had to deal with a lot of low shots,

:28:50. > :28:51.a lot of Spain. See how low he gets on this forehand. He whips the

:28:52. > :29:05.forehand through. From Bedene, the error count has to

:29:06. > :29:38.be at a bare minimum. There is that thing in tennis, just

:29:39. > :29:42.below the very top level. Bedene is very talented. You always need to

:29:43. > :29:47.hit a couple more shots and you are used to when you're up against the

:29:48. > :30:05.very best players. -- than you are used to.

:30:06. > :30:29.The on court school board has not quite caught up. -- scoreboard.

:30:30. > :30:37.Chasing the lines a bit more than you might do. When you are playing

:30:38. > :30:43.someone like Murray, you tend to go outside your normal comfort own and

:30:44. > :30:47.range. You have two. The likely is Bedene will make more errors, but

:30:48. > :30:57.you have to try and hit more winners to cataracts. -- to counter that.

:30:58. > :31:01.May serve more double faults, because you have to get bigger with

:31:02. > :31:11.the second serve. All things you have to try and get right.

:31:12. > :31:16.Remember how earlier in his career he hit so many drop shots. It was

:31:17. > :32:01.his trademark. Married with the hold. -- Murray.

:32:02. > :32:08.Looking stronger with every passing moment. We were talking about the

:32:09. > :32:12.national qualification for Bedene. Talking about the Davis Cup, and why

:32:13. > :32:15.can't he played. It was an international tennis Federation

:32:16. > :32:20.ruling, if you have represented one country at Davis Cup, you cannot

:32:21. > :32:26.represent another. He had played three times for Slovenia, dead

:32:27. > :32:30.rubbers back in 2010, 2000 12. If you have represented another

:32:31. > :32:35.country, you cannot. His point of view, he had a ready apply for a

:32:36. > :32:41.British passport, citizenship, before that ruling was brought in. I

:32:42. > :32:46.think he's a bit unlucky. Dead brothers should be banned. The match

:32:47. > :32:51.is over, you have played in three matches that did not count. It was

:32:52. > :32:57.the principle, the rules. He still was a bit unlucky. He's a great

:32:58. > :33:01.clay-court player, that is where strength lies. Sadly helping against

:33:02. > :33:06.the country that chooses that option. A good weapon to have. It

:33:07. > :33:11.applies to the Olympics as well, that ruling. Bedene cannot be

:33:12. > :33:16.considered for the British team at the Olympics.

:33:17. > :33:23.A good quality match so far. Andy Murray adjusting pretty well. He has

:33:24. > :33:29.to worry about his shoulder at the beginning. This is a totally

:33:30. > :33:36.different match, against Nicolas Mahut he had a target, someone

:33:37. > :33:40.moving in. This is baseline to baseline, he has to outmanoeuvre his

:33:41. > :34:50.opponent. Doing pretty well. So is Bedene. Pretty good match.

:34:51. > :35:37.Quickest serve of the match for Bedene. 124, if you were wondering.

:35:38. > :35:46.Not much Murray could do about those two serves, both right in the

:35:47. > :36:17.corner. Very accurate. Did well to get that one back into play.

:36:18. > :36:30.What a point. Murray seemed to be controlling it, but Bedene with the

:36:31. > :36:33.last word. Murray shaking his head, toward his box, not sure what else

:36:34. > :36:37.he could do. Came in at the right time, manoeuvred his opponent

:36:38. > :36:39.around. Lovely volley. Sometimes you have to say, a bit too good. Really

:36:40. > :37:04.was. Took Murray a long time to recover

:37:05. > :37:10.from the disappointment of that point! Stepping in, smacking that

:37:11. > :37:27.one away. Bedene may have to take more risks on the second serve.

:37:28. > :38:06.He has missed a couple of first serves, not many.

:38:07. > :38:21.Mistake from Murray, good hold from Bedene. He has done his job, a lot

:38:22. > :38:27.of pressure on him. On a couple of the service games, Murray throwing a

:38:28. > :38:36.lot at him, he has held on. Now in the middle of the set, really

:38:37. > :38:40.excellent game on the break. Did go down in any break, against a good

:38:41. > :38:42.front runner like Murray, don't want that to happen, but he has done

:38:43. > :39:34.well. Down to 52%, first serves landing,

:39:35. > :39:35.Andy Murray. Still early in the match, can be misleading. A little

:39:36. > :39:58.bit low. Tough shot, well executed by Murray.

:39:59. > :40:03.I love is instinct is to get into the net, did not do much with the

:40:04. > :40:15.first volley, but good recovery, tough shot, that one.

:40:16. > :40:29.Murray holding, to love. Bedene gingerly feeling something, seems to

:40:30. > :40:34.be OK. We were talking about watching Milos Raonic, sometimes he

:40:35. > :40:39.would not know when to come into the net. You see Murray, always picks

:40:40. > :40:49.the right moment, doing it in the right fashion. His instincts are so

:40:50. > :40:54.good. This is a quality match, and this point we saw in the previous

:40:55. > :40:59.game, Murray at his best. Bedene at his absolute best, how piquant game.

:41:00. > :41:05.Murray manoeuvres his opponent so well. One side and in other, the

:41:06. > :41:11.footwork, going back again. Then the wicked slice. Getting the chance to

:41:12. > :41:17.come in. Picking the right spot. Lovely fading volley. If you can

:41:18. > :41:21.keep doing points like that, your opponent hit winners, you say your

:41:22. > :41:26.opponent is too good. That was not gay to happen. Great play from both

:41:27. > :41:32.players. That is when you can see the potential of the lice Bedene --

:41:33. > :41:49.potential of Elisha . He has got into the 40s in the

:41:50. > :41:56.world. The GB into the top 20. Now and again coming up against the good

:41:57. > :42:00.guys, but to see where you are, purchase of against them, see where

:42:01. > :42:05.you are in the game. So far excellent seven games of tennis. You

:42:06. > :42:11.hope Bedene, can he keep this standard at? Murray will think, keep

:42:12. > :42:15.pushing him, he will wilt. At the moment, no sign of that. New balls,

:42:16. > :42:45.for Bedene. A moment from this set, you sense

:42:46. > :42:55.the better player, the bigger player will turn the screw. This that is

:42:56. > :43:06.what the form book will say, he will go up against it. At the moment,

:43:07. > :43:13.hanging in well. That is the Murray presents. Going up with a shot like

:43:14. > :43:35.that, special to get him on the run. Trying to do a little bit too much.

:43:36. > :43:46.This Bedene will be grateful for that. Second serve on 0-30. Let him

:43:47. > :44:24.off. Comfortable forehand, to do that, a rare error.

:44:25. > :44:32.Is a tough time to go for that, at 15-30. If he had got it over, would

:44:33. > :44:36.have been a winner, Murray was on the baseline. A long way back to go

:44:37. > :44:46.for a shot like that, on such an important point. Two break points

:44:47. > :44:49.for the number one seed. Mr Murray is challenging the call on the

:44:50. > :44:56.service line. The ball was called in. Trying to inspect the ball for

:44:57. > :45:09.little white markings. He thinks it is out. He is wrong. Just. We have

:45:10. > :45:13.not seen that in the crowd. It is 40-30. Sorry. Andy Murray convinced

:45:14. > :45:28.it was out. We have minor technical

:45:29. > :45:36.difficulties. The big screen showing England against Wales.

:45:37. > :45:53.Andy says, I want the evidence. We cannot show you the image on the big

:45:54. > :46:06.screen. I want to prove. Take my word for it, says the umpire.

:46:07. > :46:11.In the end, it matters not. Murray takes the break. He will serve for

:46:12. > :47:06.the first set. That is probably his weakest shot,

:47:07. > :47:12.his overhead. The same with Novak Djokovic.

:47:13. > :47:43.You cannot say, I'm going to play on that weakness.

:47:44. > :47:50.It was just a stumble in the set from Bedene. Three set points for

:47:51. > :48:34.Murray now. Andy Murray takes the first set. The

:48:35. > :48:42.world number two is looking pretty impressive. Some good tennis. Taking

:48:43. > :48:46.the first set 6-3. Really holding his service games very well indeed.

:48:47. > :48:51.The first set goes to the British number one. We are thrilled to be

:48:52. > :48:55.having tennis. There are showers around the Queen's Club but we are

:48:56. > :49:06.playing. More to look forward to this afternoon. The news from

:49:07. > :49:11.earlier today, we were expecting Andy Murray to be on later this

:49:12. > :49:17.afternoon but Kyle Edmonds is through to the quarterfinals. His

:49:18. > :49:21.opponent, who put out Dan Evans yesterday, has been forced to

:49:22. > :49:25.withdraw because of a serious wrist injury. Kyle Edmund is through to

:49:26. > :49:30.the quarterfinal to face the winner of this match. That will be the

:49:31. > :49:39.first time that two Britain's will meet in a quarterfinal in the open

:49:40. > :49:43.era. If you want to get in touch, please do. We would love to hear

:49:44. > :49:53.your thoughts for any questions you have two the team. Andy Murray in

:49:54. > :50:00.control. A bit of early concern with his shoulder. He has had a tiring

:50:01. > :50:05.clay-court season. He is a victim of his own success. A couple of five

:50:06. > :50:12.setters early on. He needed a bit of a rest. He looks pretty fresh. He

:50:13. > :50:19.looks good. He has played so well in the first round and he has played

:50:20. > :50:23.well here. Bedene played very well, only a couple of laps in the last

:50:24. > :50:26.game. That is the pressure that Murray puts on you. An excellent set

:50:27. > :51:24.of tennis. He did that well, Murray. A big game

:51:25. > :51:27.for Bedene after losing the first set. He does not want to go down an

:51:28. > :51:47.early break. These are dangerous times. A little

:51:48. > :52:33.belief evaporated. That was very impressive. What a

:52:34. > :53:24.response from Bedene. That was a pretty tidy serve from

:53:25. > :53:45.Bedene. Again, he sees off the break point

:53:46. > :54:21.well. That had to be near enough perfect

:54:22. > :54:39.to beat Andy Murray. That was 85 miles an hour that

:54:40. > :55:02.winner. It is just relentless. He plays so

:55:03. > :55:21.well. This game was 0- 40. The backhand comes right down its

:55:22. > :55:32.throat at you. It is amazing. Once small, working hard. -- once more.

:55:33. > :55:37.There is a challenge coming. Again, Murray wants to inspect. His own

:55:38. > :55:45.little investigation. Murray has a bit of height on the

:55:46. > :56:08.ball as well. Oh, dear! Bedene, from 0- 40, rouses

:56:09. > :56:14.himself. Everybody in here thought that Murray was going to break and

:56:15. > :56:18.move away with it. That was a good effort. He missed a couple of easy

:56:19. > :56:24.forehands. You'd think, maybe a bit down after losing the first set. He

:56:25. > :56:34.played a serve brilliantly. Came back from 0- 40.

:56:35. > :56:49.Maria Bueno up there as well. She is next to a former Swedish number one

:56:50. > :58:04.tennis there. He was expressing disbelief it was

:58:05. > :58:39.his own failings he was incredulous. I was about to say good, deep

:58:40. > :58:52.hitting from Bedene. That was too deep.

:58:53. > :59:05.A challenge from Bedene. A challenge and the ball was called in. Just

:59:06. > :59:11.before we put the game up on the board, we will have a look at it. It

:59:12. > :59:17.has just clipped the outside. Game, Murray. 1-1. Mr Bedene has two

:59:18. > :00:00.challenges remaining. He actually was punching the strings

:00:01. > :00:06.earlier, like the tension might be a bit wrong. Sometimes the conditions

:00:07. > :00:10.out there... May be the strings are strung to tight because it is too

:00:11. > :00:15.damp. It is heavier conditions than you expect. He has been complaining

:00:16. > :00:23.a little bit about it but has not been playing too badly.

:00:24. > :00:36.But, dear. They're to be put by Bedene. -- it was there to be put

:00:37. > :01:08.away by Bedene. Just amazing. To attack in a blink

:01:09. > :01:20.of an eye. Bedene thinks the point is over, hitting an amazing shot. At

:01:21. > :01:24.least an easy put away. That lob is one inch from the line, he can go on

:01:25. > :01:25.the attack. That is what he does, so difficult to put the ball away

:01:26. > :02:03.against. Andy Murray just checking. Every

:02:04. > :02:34.point won against him is a personal slight to Andy Murray.

:02:35. > :02:49.Cannot do to marry what Murray has done to him. -- cannot do to Murray.

:02:50. > :02:59.So low, that slice. Murray committed himself. Would not been a winner,

:03:00. > :03:00.just a couple of shorter. Another opportunity, big point again for

:03:01. > :03:20.Murray. He takes it this time. The crucial

:03:21. > :03:29.breakthrough in the second set, and the match. Andy Murray moving ahead.

:03:30. > :03:37.Murray looking to become the first five-time winner of this. In the

:03:38. > :03:53.Open Iraq, McEnroe, Leyton Hewitt, Roy Emerson. Looking at the past

:03:54. > :03:58.wins, winning in 2009, 11, 13, 15. What do you think is best surfaces?

:03:59. > :04:06.Seems to get better every season on the clay. The greater success in

:04:07. > :04:13.terms of winning the final, Australian Open. Won the US Open. I

:04:14. > :04:18.have always thought grass, in a lot of ways, his best. Some of the other

:04:19. > :04:24.top players do not move that well on grass. Less chance of losing on

:04:25. > :04:29.grass. Only a couple of players, not a couple, but if you seem to play

:04:30. > :04:36.that surface as well, they don't move as well. He is an expert at

:04:37. > :04:39.that. He is so good on everything. I still think grass is the best

:04:40. > :04:45.surface. The other players are not as good on it. Obviously, not Roger

:04:46. > :05:08.Federer, Djokovich, they are great and everything.

:05:09. > :05:15.The problem with the statistics for Bedene, losing half of those, the

:05:16. > :05:21.message, you have to shorten the points. Otherwise you are not going

:05:22. > :05:22.to win. He does not have that type of game, to take the ball on like

:05:23. > :06:05.that. That is the problem. Not his very best, getting a bit

:06:06. > :07:15.darker out here. That is a rare failing. Suddenly

:07:16. > :08:09.Murray has two face a break point. Most unexpected. The Danae hits

:08:10. > :08:19.back, drawing level in the second set. -- Bedene hits back. Architect

:08:20. > :08:26.of his own downfall, Murray. Very loose. Two backends in a row, down

:08:27. > :08:30.the line. Missing them both. One of his best shots. Bedene hanging in

:08:31. > :08:45.there, not going away. Casual, really casual. He had so

:08:46. > :10:19.many options, picking the wrong one. You do get a sense Murray has had a

:10:20. > :10:24.little blip. He wants to get this over with, obviously. His opponent

:10:25. > :10:30.becoming pretty tricky in this match. He's also aware of weather,

:10:31. > :10:34.as well. Does not want to mess around, dragged into a long second

:10:35. > :10:43.set, possibly tie-break and third set. He wants to get in, watching

:10:44. > :10:58.some reruns of Scotland in Euro 92. Of course, top of the menu. Most of

:10:59. > :11:23.all, those dark skies lingering. To the south, and the left.

:11:24. > :11:40.The art of getting your opponent out wide, one shot after another,

:11:41. > :12:03.pushing them off the court. Not much Murray could do about that.

:12:04. > :12:57.Frustration. That was clinical from Bedene.

:12:58. > :13:12.Opportunity for Murray. You have to applaud their Danae, hanging in

:13:13. > :13:17.there, will not go away. -- applaud their Danae.

:13:18. > :13:34.you try not to think about weather conditions, you think ahead, trying

:13:35. > :13:40.to play every point. Sometimes not very easy. The conditions we have

:13:41. > :13:45.had here, you want to get the match over. I think he rushed it little

:13:46. > :13:51.bit. He rushed it on that service game. I wonder what he will say

:13:52. > :13:59.after every performance. We were saying, how long was he meant to be

:14:00. > :14:04.out here? Ideally, 25-26 weeks. Always a compromise, even Lendl did

:14:05. > :14:09.not want to be on the tour that long. Might be around the slams,

:14:10. > :14:19.even around the summer, the grass court. They will be more selective,

:14:20. > :14:31.in his appearances, than last time as coach. Just a few spots of rain.

:14:32. > :14:44.Just a bit of He generated the pace of the Murray

:14:45. > :18:02.forehand. That is beautiful played by Bedene.

:18:03. > :18:11.Taking advantage of an uneven performance by Murray at the moment.

:18:12. > :18:17.He is playing so well. A classy point. Just ran Murray all around

:18:18. > :18:36.the place. Finished off. Soft hands at the net as well. Murray mattering

:18:37. > :19:00.away at himself. -- mattering. Muttering.

:19:01. > :19:08.That is a shame for Bedene. He was looking stronger. He is putting

:19:09. > :19:17.Murray under a lot of pressure in this game. Another awesome rally.

:19:18. > :19:18.Eventually it broke down. He had to dig himself out of some problem

:19:19. > :19:47.areas. Sometimes, after working so hard to

:19:48. > :20:16.hold serve, you have a go at your opponent's. -- opponent's serve.

:20:17. > :21:07.A clench of a fist. A is Number 10 for their Danae. He is ahead of

:21:08. > :22:21.Murray in that count. One small, it break point

:22:22. > :22:42.opportunity. Two converted so far from eight attempts.

:22:43. > :22:52.There it is. Bedene was a dead man walking from the moment he missed

:22:53. > :22:58.that first serve on break point. Murray again breakthrough. You sense

:22:59. > :23:06.this time, having broken, he will not so easily give it up. He seems

:23:07. > :23:15.to be really charged up now. Just lost his concentration a little bit.

:23:16. > :23:21.Bedene has hung in so well in this match. You have to give him credit.

:23:22. > :23:26.He has been very aggressive, perhaps more so than in other matches. To

:23:27. > :23:32.know he had to up his game, he has gone for it. Ten aces is an

:23:33. > :23:38.excellent start for someone like him against Murray. Sometimes you need

:23:39. > :23:47.to remind yourself what a great player Murray is. It is an amazing

:23:48. > :23:54.record. So difficult to beat him in a Grand Slam. He loses in some of

:23:55. > :23:59.the regular tournaments. It is a good effort to beat him. Best of

:24:00. > :24:06.three sets is such a different game. Best of five sets, the mental side

:24:07. > :24:14.comes into it so much more. Over the five sets he is almost unbeatable.

:24:15. > :24:19.He finds that against Djokovic. The problem last few times is he cannot

:24:20. > :24:24.stay with him for three, four hours. He can stay with him for a while.

:24:25. > :24:29.That is what they have to come up with a plan about. It is a

:24:30. > :24:37.combination probably of both. Now with Ivan Lendl back, it could make

:24:38. > :24:40.a big difference. We see. Serving 4-3.

:24:41. > :25:37.I would like to see that speed on the second serve from Murray, 90

:25:38. > :25:43.miles an hour. 90 miles an hour plus, not drifting back into the 70s

:25:44. > :25:50.and 80s sometimes. That is a website. -- rare sight. Serve and

:25:51. > :25:57.volley. He has very good technique on the

:25:58. > :26:24.volley. We work talking about the all

:26:25. > :26:31.British meetings on tour and how this was the first one since Tim

:26:32. > :26:36.Henman against Andy Murray back in Bangkok 2006. That would be the

:26:37. > :26:41.first British quarterfinal in the modern era. This one since Adelaide

:26:42. > :26:58.in 2002 when Henman beat requisite skill. -- Greg Rusedski. He expect

:26:59. > :27:01.it will be Andy Murray against Kyle Edmund, but you never know. -- you

:27:02. > :28:04.expect. That was a bit of frustration. He

:28:05. > :28:26.did not mess around with that one, did he?

:28:27. > :28:39.That is one of his more comfortable holds in the match.

:28:40. > :28:49.A reminder of that news is that Kyle Edmund moved through to the

:28:50. > :28:54.quarterfinals without having to do anything on the court. His opponent

:28:55. > :29:04.had a wrist injury so he is through. He will meet the winner of this one.

:29:05. > :29:21.Very encouragingly, he had a good win against jail Symons. -- Simon.

:29:22. > :29:26.There were mutterings of discontent from other British players. He said

:29:27. > :29:34.typical Murray words, it is up to them to respond and get better and

:29:35. > :29:42.tried to lift their game. The situation is ongoing. Bedene is

:29:43. > :29:48.still keen to play Davis Cup tennis but his appeal was unsuccessful back

:29:49. > :29:52.in March. He will need to go to a higher authority that is

:29:53. > :29:58.time-consuming and worrying and very expensive. He has other matters on

:29:59. > :31:02.his mind. Trying to stay in it, Murray is serving for the match.

:31:03. > :31:25.Concentrate on the loud instruction, second double fault.

:31:26. > :31:37.Murray winning that point. Here we are, the one he did not believe. Two

:31:38. > :32:08.cries of fault. Did not challenge. Once again marries steps in. --

:32:09. > :32:54.Murray steps in. Thankfully for all, test stage

:32:55. > :33:08.right. After that initial delayed start. Murray at match point. Just

:33:09. > :33:13.like that, Andy Murray moves through to the quarterfinals, looking for

:33:14. > :33:19.women number five. He takes another step to that target. All credit to

:33:20. > :33:29.Aljaz Bedene. Beating him in straight sets. At times, a little

:33:30. > :33:36.bit hard on himself. Again, that is the Murray way. Exactly, he's a

:33:37. > :33:41.perfectionist. A few balls he missed, got a bit sloppy, lost

:33:42. > :33:47.concentration. Complaining about his serve, serving mid 60s first serve

:33:48. > :33:55.percentage. Played a very good match indeed. Bedene pushed him hard. Good

:33:56. > :34:06.contrast from the first match, against Nicolas Mahut, coming in

:34:07. > :34:12.more, first serve was good. Good performance from Andy Murray, get

:34:13. > :34:28.through one like that. Certainly competed well enough.

:34:29. > :34:37.He will go through to another British meeting with Kyle Edmund in

:34:38. > :34:51.the quarterfinals. Andy Murray closing things out.

:34:52. > :34:57.First British man to win this five times. He's talking to us now. What

:34:58. > :35:02.will your thoughts on that performance? Not bad, difficult

:35:03. > :35:08.opponent, different to my first round, Nicolas Mahut comes to the

:35:09. > :35:16.net a lot. Aljaz plays mostly from the back. A few more rallies.

:35:17. > :35:19.Getting used to conditions of it. Ten years since he played a British

:35:20. > :35:26.person in a tennis tournament, Tim and then, feels longer than ten

:35:27. > :35:31.years ago, with respect to Tim. Did that have any bearing today? Not for

:35:32. > :35:39.me. All of the British players are doing well, I play Kyle in the next

:35:40. > :35:44.round. A long time, I'm happy there are more of them around. At the

:35:45. > :35:49.bigger events. I actually had a feeling I was going to play one

:35:50. > :35:56.here, speaking to my team. I thought I was going to get one. You wait

:35:57. > :36:01.years for one, two come along in a rush. Kyle Edmund speaking in

:36:02. > :36:08.glowing terms about what he owes you as an inspiration. What is your

:36:09. > :36:13.assessment of him as an upcoming star? He's improving all the time,

:36:14. > :36:20.steady progression for him. Not one massive leap. Getting better though.

:36:21. > :36:27.Very professional, works hard, good team around him. Going in the right

:36:28. > :36:33.direction. Hopefully this year, he can finish higher than last year.

:36:34. > :36:37.Keep progressing, nor the surfaces. Good for him to get to the latter

:36:38. > :36:42.stages of these events on the grass court. He has done well on the clay,

:36:43. > :36:48.he likes the hard. Doing well in all the surfaces, positive. We had

:36:49. > :36:52.forward to the match tomorrow. Andy Murray, congratulations, through to

:36:53. > :37:01.the quarterfinals. We can have a quick word with Aljaz Bedene. What

:37:02. > :37:09.was your take on how close it was? How much closer it might have been?

:37:10. > :37:13.Started pretty well. Congrats to envy, great match. Always a player

:37:14. > :37:18.playing someone like him. Losing in two sets never great. I hope I

:37:19. > :37:22.showed myself in a good light. Happy with my performance. You show

:37:23. > :37:27.yourself in a good light, the crowd enjoying your play. You felt at

:37:28. > :37:37.home, they enjoyed having you here. It was great, thank you from much.

:37:38. > :37:44.-- very much. It felt like home, playing in front of a home crowd.

:37:45. > :37:48.For the first time a club. Great. Onwards and upwards for Wimbledon.

:37:49. > :37:54.Hopefully the rapport between you and the British crowd will get

:37:55. > :38:03.closer and closer as the weeks go by. Hopefully. Hard lines. Aljaz

:38:04. > :38:06.Bedene. Certainly played his part. Andy Murray just too good, raising

:38:07. > :38:11.his game when it mattered. In both of those two sets will stop going

:38:12. > :38:16.home with a victory. The weather forecast was not too good. Through

:38:17. > :38:24.to the quarterfinals, guaranteed to play again tomorrow. He is through.

:38:25. > :38:27.Interesting, talking to John, Kyle talking about how much Andy Murray

:38:28. > :38:32.has helped. Training with him in Miami, hitting with him a lot. Most

:38:33. > :38:37.players give back when they quit the sport. Andy giving back when he's

:38:38. > :38:42.playing. Leading the Davis Cup team with Leon Smith. Would not have won

:38:43. > :38:47.without him, in singles and doubles, the talisman. If you want to see

:38:48. > :38:51.what work rate is, turning up for practice, how much you sleep, how

:38:52. > :38:56.much you eat, everything is a science for Andy. Leave no stone

:38:57. > :39:02.unturned in pursuit of perfection. We know only one black he's trying

:39:03. > :39:06.to get in front of, if he does that, he will win Grand Slams again. Great

:39:07. > :39:13.leader, great black to have around, to look up to. Bedene, very calm

:39:14. > :39:19.fella, still a whole lot of improvement. All the talk about

:39:20. > :39:24.this, this is a man with a British passport, it means something to

:39:25. > :39:28.them. He wept when he was not able to play in the British Davis Cup

:39:29. > :39:32.team. When the passport came through on the 31st of March, there were

:39:33. > :39:37.tears. I hope we get to know him better. Not a man of many words, but

:39:38. > :39:43.an absolute gem. My style, plays well. Did not match up well with

:39:44. > :39:48.Andy. When it mattered, he was going to move up a gear or two. Dominating

:39:49. > :39:52.the game. You cannot be passive against Andy Murray. If your game is

:39:53. > :39:58.at the back of the court, do you change? What does not necessarily

:39:59. > :40:01.come naturally? At the beginning of the match, some of these points,

:40:02. > :40:08.illustrative of what we could expect. The service motion buying

:40:09. > :40:15.him quite a lot of success. Quick serve, good on grass. If Murray

:40:16. > :40:21.comes for you, not much you can do about it. Same thing happened

:40:22. > :40:27.against Novak Djokovic, you know Bedene will get two, three, four

:40:28. > :40:30.games in the set. You are supposed to do something else, quite what, I

:40:31. > :40:36.not sure. That is where the coach comes in. When bed plays at the net,

:40:37. > :40:45.he does quite well. He can be more effective. -- when Bedene plays of

:40:46. > :40:50.the net. If he works hard on his fitness, explosion on the ball that

:40:51. > :40:57.can only help him. Like spec team to be back in the top 50 for sure. I

:40:58. > :41:00.think he will be looking for top 20. The Matt Wilcox development

:41:01. > :41:07.programme, fantastic programme, full of professionalism and excellence.

:41:08. > :41:12.He has been there for seven years. You mention the good lady had.

:41:13. > :41:17.Certainly had his moments. Beautiful rallies, striking the ball so well.

:41:18. > :41:22.He strikes it cleanly, lateral movement unbelievable. Pulling the

:41:23. > :41:27.trigger on the forehand side. His defence is very good. Not going to

:41:28. > :41:32.miss that one. All the time in the world, fine from the back of the

:41:33. > :41:41.court. Concerned about Andy Murray's shoulder, any pain he has got.

:41:42. > :41:44.Clearly worn off. Prefer to see Bedene on the attack on a grass

:41:45. > :41:48.court cannot afford to let the other people get the first striking. Moves

:41:49. > :41:54.well lead to the ground, plenty of power. Good service motion, low to

:41:55. > :42:01.the ground. Get something short, this is a guy, who will win

:42:02. > :42:07.regularly on the tour level. Not a man there to make up the numbers. He

:42:08. > :42:11.is hard to beat. Anyone has a slight off day, he will take advantage.

:42:12. > :42:18.Very consistent. The quality of the movement. That was at 30-30, 3-2,

:42:19. > :42:24.first set. Andy was upset, but nothing you could do against a shot

:42:25. > :42:30.like that. Slice from Andy Murray inside the baseline. He did that a

:42:31. > :42:36.lot, slice, keeping low, not giving Bedene muchly hit. When you do, he

:42:37. > :42:43.moves you out. Nice touch at the net. He has some very tidy volleys,

:42:44. > :42:50.like to see him coming forward more often. Imagine if those to were the

:42:51. > :42:58.-- those two worth the Davis Cup team. I understand why the other

:42:59. > :43:02.guys were upset. Extremely lucrative to be a member of winning Davis Cup

:43:03. > :43:08.team. When Aljaz Bedene was trying to get in the team by appealing the

:43:09. > :43:13.ruling, James Ward, be quiet, Dan Evans saying he does not prove too

:43:14. > :43:17.much. I can understand. Very much what happened with Greg Rusedski.

:43:18. > :43:23.The same sort of questions. What is his motivation? Commercial interest.

:43:24. > :43:33.There are bigger things than that consideration. He has lived here

:43:34. > :43:39.since 2007, training here. Bedene, yes. He's prepared to make the

:43:40. > :43:43.commitment, should be in the team, he has a British passport. The ITF

:43:44. > :43:47.changing the rules at a later date. Subsequently backing that up.

:43:48. > :43:54.Stephen Farrow, the lawyer acting for him, he paid some of those fees.

:43:55. > :44:01.Good of them to do so. He has a very good case. Talk of other federations

:44:02. > :44:06.doing the same, when people change their nationality, getting together,

:44:07. > :44:10.going to the ITF. That is what they said, if they do him, they will open

:44:11. > :44:17.up a can of worms. That is the argument. Why they threw it out. If

:44:18. > :44:22.somebody has a passport, Australian, they should be all to play for

:44:23. > :44:28.Australia, Canadian, Canada. Bedene of the British passport means so

:44:29. > :44:36.much to him. He considers himself British. I said, why are you ever

:44:37. > :44:40.hear? He said, I love this country. How nice to hear after all the

:44:41. > :44:43.nonsense in the debate over the goodness

:44:44. > :44:50.We will move on! Bedene can't play in the Davis Cup so the number two

:44:51. > :44:55.is Kyle Edmund. That is Andy Murray's next opponent, 21-year-old

:44:56. > :45:00.Kyle Edmund. John spoke to him earlier today. Three years ago if

:45:01. > :45:04.I'd offered you a quarterfinal at Queen's what would you have said,

:45:05. > :45:08.would you have said, don't be silly or, that's what I'm after?

:45:09. > :45:14.Absolutely would have been, that's what I'm after. Being a sportsman,

:45:15. > :45:18.individual player, you know, you have ambition, you want to do well,

:45:19. > :45:25.I think that's natural. You want to go as far as you can. Always

:45:26. > :45:29.improve. Yeah, I'm in the quarterfinals, but obviously, you

:45:30. > :45:33.know, by merit and a bit of luck. You take your luck, you have

:45:34. > :45:42.misfortune. I've had to pull out of matches. In Neath, I had to pull out

:45:43. > :45:47.after going over on my ankle, something you don't want to do. --

:45:48. > :45:54.in Nice. It works the other way, sometimes you get luck and you take

:45:55. > :45:58.it when you can. Yeah, it happened in the quarterfinals. -- happy to be

:45:59. > :46:04.in the quarterfinals. Whoever I play next will be a Brit. If it's Andy it

:46:05. > :46:09.will be on a scale of enormity in terms of playing in front of a

:46:10. > :46:19.British crowd with the world number two and global superstar, it's one

:46:20. > :46:23.of those wow moments. He's done so much for the game, for British

:46:24. > :46:28.tennis, but at the same time also having a relationship on and off the

:46:29. > :46:33.court with him, he's someone you respect. I've been fortunate to know

:46:34. > :46:39.him for 3-4 years, spending time with him, you know, socially. Off

:46:40. > :46:43.the court and in the professional environment. I've a lot of respect

:46:44. > :46:46.for him. The world changes very quickly, you go from being a

:46:47. > :46:52.promising junior who occasionally does the odd local radio interview,

:46:53. > :46:56.to having big press conferences and doing interviews of the national

:46:57. > :47:00.television, do you like that or are you finding it hard to come to terms

:47:01. > :47:05.with? I think it's part of it, that's the way I look at it, it's

:47:06. > :47:14.part of the job, as you go up through the rankings, a lot more, I

:47:15. > :47:19.don't know, demand comes with it. I think you have a choice as well, you

:47:20. > :47:25.can choose to put it off, either bit negative about it, or you can choose

:47:26. > :47:32.to embrace it and enjoy it. I certainly like to be honest and just

:47:33. > :47:36.say what I feel and stuff. Yeah, I think, as you said, it's something

:47:37. > :47:41.you don't do as a junior but as you become a senior you certainly watch

:47:42. > :47:45.TV and see professionals to it, the top guys do it, so as you can

:47:46. > :47:49.expect, when you go up the game, this is what's going to happen. You

:47:50. > :47:54.can see who does it well and who doesn't. Be honest, serious

:47:55. > :47:58.question, you are 40 grand better off no matter what happens in the

:47:59. > :48:03.quarterfinal and you are young guy, does it ever occur to you, the

:48:04. > :48:11.money? Yeah, it's obviously is a factor, you come up, you have bills

:48:12. > :48:17.to pay. You have a team. All those things. You need to travel. There is

:48:18. > :48:22.the point where you are a junior and maybe get funding and there is a

:48:23. > :48:25.point when you become a senior and have two provide for yourself. As

:48:26. > :48:30.you become older that becomes the case. I have a team that helps me,

:48:31. > :48:39.trainer, fitness coach, tennis coach. If you invest in your career,

:48:40. > :48:47.you will get back from it, that is the way I look at it. Travel and

:48:48. > :48:50.stuff. So, you know, that's also the benefit you get from putting in the

:48:51. > :48:55.work. If you do well you get financial benefit. It's not

:48:56. > :49:02.everything. I definitely don't think about, if I win this, I'll get this

:49:03. > :49:08.much. If your game improves and you get results, that's the benefit. So

:49:09. > :49:13.the Ferrari can wait? It can wait, exactly. I'm not sure my mum and dad

:49:14. > :49:19.would approve. I don't think they would, would they! This is the draw.

:49:20. > :49:22.It's right at the top where Kyle is through to face Andy Murray. In

:49:23. > :49:28.Steve Johnson, who came through against Mannarino yesterday will

:49:29. > :49:36.play Marin Cilic, who won here late last night. We'll see the bottom

:49:37. > :49:42.half of the draw. Still being played at the moment. Vesely against Raonic

:49:43. > :49:50.will be next on Centre Court. And after that Bautista Agut will play.

:49:51. > :49:57.And Tomic and Verdasco will be playing on Court One later stop Kyle

:49:58. > :50:03.and Andy are good friends. Kyle has improved so much, he has big weapons

:50:04. > :50:07.now. As is Andy Murray stick that in the middle of the court he knows

:50:08. > :50:10.Kyle will give it the treatment. Look at his development, Kyle has

:50:11. > :50:16.done so fantastically well, delighted for him. Also delighted

:50:17. > :50:19.that Dennis and Stephen his mum and dad are down-to-earth. He's not sure

:50:20. > :50:25.they would approve, he mentioned. It still matters to him, that approval,

:50:26. > :50:30.that family backing. This is important, it's a bit like Eric Dier

:50:31. > :50:34.in the England football team, level-headed, from a lovely family.

:50:35. > :50:38.Sometimes you can tell. I get the feeling with Kyle he's not going to

:50:39. > :50:45.get out of things, he's just bought a new Volkswagen. He has the R

:50:46. > :50:49.version, which was probably met with some disapproval, but it's not a

:50:50. > :50:54.Ferrari. He understands fully that there is more to come. We'll talk

:50:55. > :51:00.more about Kyle in a moment but here come the players for the next match.

:51:01. > :51:04.Milos Raonic leads the way. He put out Nick Kyrgios in three sets

:51:05. > :51:07.yesterday, that match taking three days to be completed because of the

:51:08. > :51:12.rain. Lovely to see one of the new stars of the game, Vesely of the

:51:13. > :51:17.Czech Republic. He lost in the qualifying but came in as a lucky

:51:18. > :51:21.loser. Before we talk about this one, because they've got the coin

:51:22. > :51:27.toss to do, and a warm up, a little bit more about Kyle and the weapons

:51:28. > :51:32.he had. We were talking about how he can hurt Murray, he has a big server

:51:33. > :51:35.as well as a big forehand. To be quite honest, that is a match that

:51:36. > :51:40.is a horror story in every department for Kyle, but a great

:51:41. > :51:48.indicator, litmus test if you like, of exactly where he is in the game.

:51:49. > :51:52.I would prefer to him to beat Paul-Henri Mathieu today. His

:51:53. > :51:59.backhand has improved greatly, reminds me of Jim careers in his

:52:00. > :52:03.pomp. Short jab half the time. His movement at the side and his

:52:04. > :52:08.defence, clearly something Ryan Jones his coach will have to work

:52:09. > :52:12.on. Well outside the tramlines to hit beforehand. Natural gift, the

:52:13. > :52:16.racket head speed. Sometimes looks comfortable at the net, happy to

:52:17. > :52:20.come forward. His game is big enough to trouble people. In some ways it's

:52:21. > :52:24.good you've got things you can work on and improve, there are quite an

:52:25. > :52:27.number of areas, you talk about the movement, more variety, a few more

:52:28. > :52:34.depth shots and drop shots, variety to add to the game not to be too

:52:35. > :52:37.one-dimensional. So he can improve and go up the rankings. Do you make

:52:38. > :52:42.the decision as a coach that he wants to work on the strength and

:52:43. > :52:46.say, I'm just going to do that, keep working on that, do you fiddle

:52:47. > :52:50.around ten or 20% of the time with the weaknesses? Or do you make a

:52:51. > :52:55.decision of really rounding his game out and working on the defence and

:52:56. > :52:57.the backhand, trying to get a real good all-round game. His forehand

:52:58. > :53:04.isn't going anywhere. Is world-class. Its playbook number

:53:05. > :53:09.one, T off on beforehand. They'll be working on stuff. He will invest in

:53:10. > :53:13.himself, he's a smart young man from his management is good, they make

:53:14. > :53:17.good decisions for him. I'm very impressed with him and if he goes

:53:18. > :53:21.top 60 this week even if he loses this match... I got that from

:53:22. > :53:28.Twitter, you can probably disregard that. But because this is ATP 500,

:53:29. > :53:32.that could be the case. Confidence going into Wimbledon, where he has

:53:33. > :53:36.had three wildcards and hasn't been able to progress. This is his year,

:53:37. > :53:41.this is his time. I think he's worked through the challengers.

:53:42. > :53:45.That's what you have to do, but the ranking high enough so you don't go

:53:46. > :53:50.back down there because it's hard to get back out again. Let's talk about

:53:51. > :53:54.the players on court at the moment. Milos Raonic we know a fair bit

:53:55. > :53:58.about him. But Vesely, I remember watching him in the juniors a few

:53:59. > :54:04.years ago, he was a big, strong junior. In a macro talk about

:54:05. > :54:10.Giants, Milos Raonic, 25, semifinalist in the Australian Open,

:54:11. > :54:14.if I list at Wimbledon. If you don't follow the game day in, day out, do

:54:15. > :54:18.you remember he was in those situations? He goes about his

:54:19. > :54:22.business in such a quiet and understated way. For a man who looks

:54:23. > :54:28.like a Tyrannosaurus rex, the power he has. He's actually a very shy,

:54:29. > :54:31.gentlemanly fellow, I don't think he likes the limelight particularly, I

:54:32. > :54:36.don't think he's particularly comfortable with that. With John

:54:37. > :54:42.McEnroe on board its interesting. What does he want McEnroe to bring

:54:43. > :54:46.to the game, is it personality? Is it the physical nature of playing

:54:47. > :54:52.the game on grass? I think there is certainly an element of both. He has

:54:53. > :54:57.the right man in the corner if he wants personality, that's for sure.

:54:58. > :55:01.Nick Kyrgios said how he attacked him, he said he didn't give him any

:55:02. > :55:04.time to think, right on top of him, always trying to move forward,

:55:05. > :55:09.always kept Kyrgios on the back foot. For three sets. He's very

:55:10. > :55:14.comfortable at the back of the court. When he has more time to hit

:55:15. > :55:18.the ball on the big forehand. It's a huge stroke, absolute haymaker. He's

:55:19. > :55:21.very comfortable at the back but you have to do some things where you are

:55:22. > :55:25.not comfortable but you know you will get the job done. If you are

:55:26. > :55:29.six foot five with that wingspan and a massive serve like that, and tidy

:55:30. > :55:34.technique on the volley, you can get to the net. John McEnroe's coaching

:55:35. > :55:38.advice is get to the net. Amongst other things. I think he sees the

:55:39. > :55:44.Royal materials with Milos Raonic. He's not going to work with just

:55:45. > :55:49.anybody, not going to waste his time. He's been knocking on the door

:55:50. > :55:53.of the Grand Slam semifinals at the Australian, been playing good

:55:54. > :55:58.matches. He maybe needs that push over the line and feels he can play

:55:59. > :56:03.well on the grass and come forward and volley. When I saw this guy

:56:04. > :56:09.playing in the juniors he was such a big, strong player at 16, 17 years

:56:10. > :56:12.of age. Looking at the record books this year only three players have

:56:13. > :56:19.beaten Djokovic and he is one of them. It was Lopez, Marianne Tim.

:56:20. > :56:26.Lopez was a default. -- it was Lopez, Murray and him. I'm not shown

:56:27. > :56:30.over was 100% engaged, he gets engaged generally when he's about to

:56:31. > :56:35.lose and Vesely knocked him off. He's probably. Whenever I see Jiri

:56:36. > :56:40.play I think about the guy he played against in the juniors as well,

:56:41. > :56:44.Oliver Golding. Who quit the game, the British player who had such

:56:45. > :56:49.wonderful Grand Slam success in the juniors. It is so sad we lost him

:56:50. > :56:55.and James Bailey who won the Australian Open, and a number of

:56:56. > :57:00.others. That transition is so hard, to go from top junior under the

:57:01. > :57:02.tour. We were talking about all the young players coming through, Kyle

:57:03. > :57:21.Edmund's era. There is an edge , Taylor Fritz... And the former

:57:22. > :57:24.Russian junior champion. Why quit, like Golding did? You have to

:57:25. > :57:31.understand you have three or four more years when you are not a big

:57:32. > :57:36.deal. He was a character. Vesely can definitely play the game and at 22

:57:37. > :57:40.he is a man, not the child. He's been at 35 in the world. This will

:57:41. > :57:44.be a tough match, he has a big left-handed serve. John McEnroe has

:57:45. > :57:48.been buzzing with Raonic, he has been key to the practice session,

:57:49. > :57:56.getting in those left Serbs. Look! We've only had about two minutes of

:57:57. > :58:02.sunshine, but Mac is prepared, he has the shades on. He has to look

:58:03. > :58:05.after that lovely skin of his. He will not thank us for showing this,

:58:06. > :58:11.I can tell you, I'll get the brunt of it, probably. Show it anyway.

:58:12. > :58:15.Ricardo Piatti on the right has coached great deal of super players

:58:16. > :58:20.over the years. He's a massive part of the team. You never get to hear

:58:21. > :58:26.about him but he has been there and done it. Great deal of experience in

:58:27. > :58:32.the Raonic camp. This is going to be a big hitting match, and bolts,

:58:33. > :58:36.left-handers always tough on grass. It's horrible. When you had a second

:58:37. > :58:40.chance like Vesely who lost in the qualifying and got lucky loser

:58:41. > :58:46.position because somebody in the main drop all out... Dog beloved

:58:47. > :58:57.pulled out, then he came in and beat Jeremy Chardy. -- to three macro

:58:58. > :59:04.pulled out. Gilles Muller came back winning the second set tie-break

:59:05. > :59:06.18-16 against John Isner. John Isner had ten match point in this. --

:59:07. > :59:20.Dolgopolov pulled out. He's at it again, well done Gilles

:59:21. > :59:26.Muller, who Delgado used to coach. That has been happening on Court

:59:27. > :59:31.Number One. He faces either Fernando Verdasco or Bernard Tomic. We're

:59:32. > :59:37.ready for this one, the sun has come out. Mac is prepared, I hope you

:59:38. > :59:41.are, too. Peter Fleming alongside John Inverdale in commentary.

:59:42. > :59:46.COMMENTATOR: Good afternoon everybody. That might be overstating

:59:47. > :59:49.it. Hello, both of you. I know that there are rival attractions

:59:50. > :59:54.elsewhere. Peter Fleming is here, I'm here. If there are two copy

:59:55. > :00:03.about there, we are a quorum and we can start. It is an interesting

:00:04. > :00:07.game. As Andrew and Sue were saying. Jiri Vesely can go to his grave

:00:08. > :00:10.saying he wants beat Novak Djokovic even if it never happens again, if

:00:11. > :00:14.Novak never loses another matching his career, Vesely did beat him at

:00:15. > :00:26.Monte Carlo this year and it is no mean feat.

:00:27. > :00:33.Exactly, Vesely with a big serve. This match will be quite different

:00:34. > :00:44.from the last match, rest assured, on this main court, a lot of aces.

:00:45. > :00:54.You're a genius. You must be psychic. How did I know ace must

:00:55. > :01:20.come sometime soon? That is the shot that has improved

:01:21. > :01:22.immensely. Used to be a huge hole in Raonic's game, the two handed

:01:23. > :01:34.backhand is improving every day. You talk about big serving, I was

:01:35. > :01:39.true on in a compulsive kind of way to that second set tie-break between

:01:40. > :01:44.Gilles Muller and John Isner on Court One, so I left Andy Murray and

:01:45. > :01:51.Aljaz Bedene for the duration of that.

:01:52. > :02:05.I thought that was going over shortly but it went on forever. It

:02:06. > :02:10.did feature a call of indescribably bad proportions. It is not often you

:02:11. > :02:16.see John Isner go berserk on a tennis court. Was that on match

:02:17. > :02:20.point? No, but it got molar back into the match. It was just one of

:02:21. > :02:24.those moments. I thought, if John Isner loses this match it will be a

:02:25. > :02:30.very interesting moment in the press conference afterwards, and he has

:02:31. > :02:36.now lost it. It is not often you see him, he's a big man, but very

:02:37. > :02:49.briefly he had a big temper. Just six foot six!

:02:50. > :02:57.I know we have been talking about Raonic wanting to come to the net

:02:58. > :03:02.more often. That time, though, possibly a little premature. Needs

:03:03. > :03:03.to work the rally may be a couple more shots, to get Vesely out of

:03:04. > :03:25.position. Obviously injury and illness are

:03:26. > :03:29.unfortunate for the individual concerned, but can often be a bonus

:03:30. > :03:33.for the people who are beneficiaries. When Dolgopolov

:03:34. > :03:39.pulled out, Vesely came in. And he has nothing to lose, he was wasn't

:03:40. > :03:44.expecting to be here so he can use every opportunity to say, this is a

:03:45. > :03:49.golden opportunity I didn't expect to have. That is one way of looking

:03:50. > :03:53.at it but I don't think anyone does look at it like that. There is an

:03:54. > :03:59.opportunity cost to losing this match. It is an opportunity to get

:04:00. > :04:04.to the quarterfinals, ranking points and still the chance to go further,

:04:05. > :04:12.so it's not the sort of match you enter into lightly.

:04:13. > :04:18.No, but the point I was making was he with out of the tournament and

:04:19. > :04:23.he's packed his bag and then someone suddenly says, come back, you get a

:04:24. > :04:28.second shot at it. And I'm saying, he won't look at it like that. I'm

:04:29. > :04:32.agreeing with you... You can look at it either way. There is always three

:04:33. > :05:00.sides to a Queen. -- to a coin. A couple of wild errors from Raonic

:05:01. > :05:04.fare. I'm not sure if Johnny Mac will be that concerned, though.

:05:05. > :05:10.Let's face it, when you hold serve as easily as he does, on a regular

:05:11. > :05:25.basis, roll the dice, give it a shot.

:05:26. > :05:35.Like a mouse on a string, Vesely. Your former friend Johnny Mac, looks

:05:36. > :05:36.like he is dressed as a cricket umpire today. Have you seen what he

:05:37. > :05:56.has on? It's gone from Woody Alan to Dickie

:05:57. > :06:01.Bird in a few hours. No, you told me he selected that outfit especially

:06:02. > :06:06.to honour all the umpires and referees of the world. Who he has

:06:07. > :06:27.had such respect for over the years. Exactly!

:06:28. > :06:35.I suspect Raonic, and we can maybe talk about this more when the

:06:36. > :06:40.inevitable point is won in the next couple of points and they change

:06:41. > :06:43.ends. I suspect Raonic will be delighted with the novelty of

:06:44. > :07:06.McEnroe being in his box gone. I don't know. I think that although

:07:07. > :07:11.he's a quiet guy, he wants to be number one in the world. So

:07:12. > :07:20.therefore I'm sure he's ready to embrace all that comes with that. So

:07:21. > :07:28.if John McEnroe creates a bit of a circus atmosphere, and let's face

:07:29. > :07:33.it, it's not a huge circus, because John, as much as he can, he's happy

:07:34. > :07:47.just to stay in the shadows little bit. That's a serious tattoo. He has

:07:48. > :07:51.a few of them. Decided he didn't want to have the cricket umpire's

:07:52. > :08:00.outfit any more. It was just a moment now, and he can get on with

:08:01. > :08:07.life. He is wearing a Rage Against The Machine T-shirt. Are you a fan?

:08:08. > :08:15.No, but he is a good friend of one of the members in LA, when he does

:08:16. > :08:24.go to LA. I don't suppose there are too sentence Rage Against The

:08:25. > :09:12.Machine fans at Queen's today. Maybe...

:09:13. > :09:20.That serve's never coming back. Hit it almost directly on the T. It

:09:21. > :09:52.won't be the last. So you were talking earlier on about

:09:53. > :10:00.Raonic going in at the right time. That was a well worked point. The

:10:01. > :10:04.sliced backhand often is quite effective at breaking up an

:10:05. > :10:07.opponent's rhythm. You have to play it back safely, put more top-spin on

:10:08. > :10:20.it than ordinarily you would like. That 1's not back either. The ball

:10:21. > :10:25.was called in. Did that look good to you, it looked it could have been

:10:26. > :10:28.wide? You are going wide? I am going in. Probably the edge of the line.

:10:29. > :10:52.The call stands. 40-30. Mr Raonic with two challenges

:10:53. > :10:57.remaining. There are a few things Johnny Mac would like to work on

:10:58. > :11:03.with Milos. His ability to put returns back in play could improve.

:11:04. > :11:05.And even that last one, where he was trying to just chip the ball back

:11:06. > :11:34.and it came off the frame almost. By the very nature of being six foot

:11:35. > :11:37.six, six foot seven, whatever it might be, players can often appear a

:11:38. > :11:44.bit rushed sometimes. But Vesely seems to have a lot of time on the

:11:45. > :11:49.ball, doesn't he? Yes, whatever that means. Never quite got that same. It

:11:50. > :12:00.means that they don't appear to ever be in a rush.

:12:01. > :12:16.Yes, well... It takes away the chip return or the floated chip return.

:12:17. > :12:20.Often players who just float it back to the base, then Raonic has to

:12:21. > :12:22.start again. If an opponent knows he cannot play that shot, he's going to

:12:23. > :13:07.miss a lot more returns. Happy with that? Beautiful. This

:13:08. > :13:13.game has grown immensely over the last two years or so. I remember the

:13:14. > :13:15.year he played Murray at the US Open and was trounced by him, like a fish

:13:16. > :13:36.out of water. Having predicted a ace fest and no

:13:37. > :13:37.rallies, we've actually had a lot of all court tennis is surprisingly in

:13:38. > :14:05.this first four and a half games. Raonic waited just long enough for

:14:06. > :14:21.Vesely to take off the other way. You heard John McEnroe say "Good

:14:22. > :14:35.serve". The voice cutting through the

:14:36. > :14:40.silence here on Centre Court. He's a good cheerleader, he always has

:14:41. > :14:45.been. Does he have it in him to sit with his hands clenched between his

:14:46. > :14:49.knees and to just watch a game in silence, or when it gets to the

:14:50. > :14:53.really big occasion, if we were talking about the final here on

:14:54. > :14:57.Sunday if Raonic got there, if a quarter or semi-final at Wimbledon,

:14:58. > :15:03.is he going to be really engaged vocally, emotionally, physically?

:15:04. > :15:08.No, I don't see it, I don't see that at all. It's not about him, it's

:15:09. > :15:15.about getting Milos to play as well as he can. No, he's not going to be

:15:16. > :15:20.jumping up and down, shouting, assist pumping. He's going to do

:15:21. > :15:24.what most other coaches do. They kind of meld into the background,

:15:25. > :15:30.say it's all you buddy, you're the greatest. Let's go!

:15:31. > :15:37.Sorry if you're disappointed by that. I'm not disappointed by that

:15:38. > :15:41.actually. I personally think there will be, in a Wimbledon final, I

:15:42. > :15:50.think there could be some fist pumping if Raonic is in there. OK.

:15:51. > :15:58.Of course, who is to say that he won't be?

:15:59. > :16:14.I think just the Vaughan factor raises Raonic into one of the top,

:16:15. > :16:23.if not the top outsider. -- the Johnny Mac factor. He's still got

:16:24. > :16:47.another 2-3 weeks to develop. I suppose the likelihood is he will

:16:48. > :16:52.be seeded eight at Wimbledon. Which effectively gives him a quarterfinal

:16:53. > :16:56.berth against somebody, at the moment when the draw comes out it'll

:16:57. > :16:59.be fascinating to see the permutations. People will want to

:17:00. > :17:04.avoid him, nobody will look forward to playing him three weeks down the

:17:05. > :17:41.road in another last eight match at Wimbledon.

:17:42. > :17:46.It is beat McEnroe factor that means you end up talking about Raonic the

:17:47. > :17:49.whole time in a match like this when it takes two to tango and we will be

:17:50. > :18:00.level pegging shortly, you suspect. He would have been happy until that

:18:01. > :18:52.moment. So, we are all square. A match yet

:18:53. > :18:57.to ignite, but some good play. And one or two moments where it tips

:18:58. > :19:29.below what we might expect. If you were watching that first

:19:30. > :19:33.serve from Raonic and thought it looked in, I, from up here, thought

:19:34. > :20:16.it looked in. Hawk-Eye has told us it was out actually.

:20:17. > :20:31.That was a great lob, it really was. Yeah. Nice feel. On the half-volley,

:20:32. > :20:47.too. Yeah, this is just dream on Hollywood. Also worth saying, that

:20:48. > :20:50.lob was over a man who is six foot six tall, it's like when Don is now

:20:51. > :20:55.gets logged and there is an element of comedy about that. That is the

:20:56. > :20:59.touch on the half-volley to get the ball that high, then get it down. To

:21:00. > :21:05.be fair, Vesely was charging pretty quickly. Again, with the grass just

:21:06. > :21:34.a little slippery. Hard to change directions quickly.

:21:35. > :21:40.Here, in two minds, wasn't he? Looked as though he wanted to leave

:21:41. > :21:52.it and at the last moment he dared not. Vesely feinted to go one way,

:21:53. > :22:04.went the other. Suddenly... Two break points for the Czech.

:22:05. > :22:11.That's a pretty solid way to save one of them. You look at the game

:22:12. > :22:19.like 15-40 and say, what a great opportunity. Get Raonic will say,

:22:20. > :22:23.OK, this game is about even now. I'm sure he wins at least as many games

:22:24. > :22:36.when he is behind 15-40 on his serve. As he loses.

:22:37. > :22:48.Vesely's looking at the baseline, hoping, he was yearling to hear a

:22:49. > :22:52.cry of" out" from the line judge. It was on the line which is perhaps why

:22:53. > :23:04.Vesely didn't hit the passing shot as cleanly as he would have liked.

:23:05. > :23:08.Checks that it hits the line. It's also worth saying, if sometimes you

:23:09. > :23:13.think line judges, for heaven 's sake, how can they get those things

:23:14. > :23:17.wrong? I actually went out and sat on the doubles match last night,

:23:18. > :23:21.Murray and Suarez, I sat on the service line pretending to be a line

:23:22. > :23:29.judge. Tell you what, sometimes very, very hard to tell, really is.

:23:30. > :23:36.The question is, what's wrong with them? Why would they want to be a

:23:37. > :23:40.line judge, it is a mug 's game, you can't possibly win in that role. You

:23:41. > :23:49.get 93 calls right and the one you get one if the one that counts. --

:23:50. > :23:55.the one you get wrong. On TV, the cameras are behind the court. It

:23:56. > :23:59.looks quite pedestrian, Raonic, what is the big deal, I could return

:24:00. > :24:06.that! Then you sit on the side of the court and get a feel for the

:24:07. > :24:12.speed being hit. Even I said, Whoa, I don't want to be anywhere near

:24:13. > :24:17.that serve. On the play, the ball makes a distinct mark. In a sense it

:24:18. > :24:22.makes it a bit easier to see. But on grass, especially with the whitewash

:24:23. > :24:26.happens to spread a bit around the line, the ball can scoot on it

:24:27. > :24:33.amusing, was it in the mouth, I'm not sure. You're just guessing.

:24:34. > :24:39.It's all about pretending like you know best. There is a man who should

:24:40. > :24:45.have made a career out of being a line judge. The number of times when

:24:46. > :24:48.he was serving and I was at the net and he would hit the serve six

:24:49. > :24:55.inches long and he would look at me like, what was that? Sometimes he

:24:56. > :25:00.would hit it on the line and say, what was that? I would say, that was

:25:01. > :25:07.long. I just don't want to deal with it. There were a lot of balls, he

:25:08. > :25:16.was 100% certain were in, that were out. He would have been a lousy

:25:17. > :25:21.linesman. Good job he stuck to playing. And coaching. 4-3. On

:25:22. > :25:34.serve. I probably ought to welcome viewers

:25:35. > :25:39.to BBC Two who may have been elsewhere. Good afternoon. Lovely to

:25:40. > :25:43.have you with us. As you were flicking around the channels and

:25:44. > :25:46.found us, here we are with tennis at Queen's and a hugely competitive

:25:47. > :25:48.match from Jiri Vesely from the Czech Republic and Milos Raonic of

:25:49. > :26:46.Canada. Exactly what you were talking about

:26:47. > :26:52.earlier, Raonic, getting the ball back into play on the return,

:26:53. > :26:57.whatever. Yeah, it's important, all the best players but a lot of

:26:58. > :27:11.returns in the play. Plain and simple. Give your opponent a chance

:27:12. > :27:18.to make an error. He makes up for it pretty emphatically. The fourth ace.

:27:19. > :27:22.It's more difficult, though, for Milos because he doesn't move as

:27:23. > :27:24.well as the very best players, doesn't get around the court

:27:25. > :27:32.anywhere near as well as Djokovic, Nadal, Federer. Murray.

:27:33. > :27:36.Subconsciously he will think I need to return this ball with a bit of

:27:37. > :27:42.interest so I can join the point with the other hand perhaps. That,

:27:43. > :27:54.of course, leads to more unforced errors.

:27:55. > :28:01.Am sure Andy Murray when he is returning serve just says, OK, get

:28:02. > :28:16.the ball back anywhere near the baseline and I'm good. I'm now 50-50

:28:17. > :28:20.in this round. Marries the most phenomenal athlete, he moves like a

:28:21. > :28:23.gazelle sometimes, which you would never, if looking for an animal to

:28:24. > :28:27.describe Raonic committee would never go down that route, would you?

:28:28. > :29:27.He's more of a bull rhino. If you hit any ball over shoulder

:29:28. > :29:32.height for Raonic... Kiss that point goodbye he is solid as a rock. Most

:29:33. > :29:40.of our viewers would have fancied put away, though. Yeah, but a lot of

:29:41. > :29:43.players on the previous smash would have hit high volleys on that one.

:29:44. > :30:01.And hit it ineffectually. Lovely touch from Vesely. You know,

:30:02. > :30:06.I'm sure you didn't mean to be disparaging to Milos Raonic, but

:30:07. > :30:11.from baseline to net and from side to side, he moves well. He got off

:30:12. > :30:16.the mark quickly, got up to that ball very quickly, where he needs a

:30:17. > :30:26.little bit of work perhaps is changing directions, whereas Murray

:30:27. > :30:32.changes direction on a diner. When you have a serve like that... --

:30:33. > :30:41.changes direction on a dime. Three aces to Raonic and four for Vesely.

:30:42. > :30:46.We have some interesting statistics on where Vesely is serving and what

:30:47. > :30:54.effect it has. Every time he goes wide, wins the point, on either

:30:55. > :31:00.flank. You can see the sliced out wide, here hasn't hit it that often,

:31:01. > :31:06.but it has quite a bit of spin on it, slides through the court and

:31:07. > :31:10.goes to Raonic's weaker link. On the deuce caught out wide, Vesely is

:31:11. > :31:17.hitting that ball very flat with a lot of power, and just bowling

:31:18. > :31:23.Raonic, really. Let's face it, he hasn't lost a lot of points on

:31:24. > :31:29.serve, has he? No. But he will certainly hope he can keep that run

:31:30. > :31:34.going here, because he's about to serve to stay in this first set. And

:31:35. > :31:38.you have to say, this one is a match in advance where you thought it

:31:39. > :31:43.would have at least one tie-break in it. The way things are going at the

:31:44. > :31:51.moment, we're not that far away from the first one. Every time Milos

:31:52. > :31:52.Raonic walks on the court, you think there has to be at least one

:31:53. > :32:07.tie-break in this match. That was in, from where we were

:32:08. > :32:18.sitting, that was definitely in. I'll take your word for it. Hawk-Eye

:32:19. > :32:47.says in. Not the most demonstrative of

:32:48. > :32:53.players, Vesely, you have to say. But he doesn't need to be when you

:32:54. > :33:05.are hammering the ball at a odd miles an hour like that. -- 120 odd

:33:06. > :33:12.miles an hour. That is a solid serving game, four first serves.

:33:13. > :33:18.None of them came back, did they? That game took barely a minute.

:33:19. > :33:27.That's what you want, when you're serving to stay in the set. So the

:33:28. > :33:30.pressure, such if there is any pressure when you have a serve as

:33:31. > :33:48.big as Raonic, is at the other end. If I'm not mistaken Raonic's

:33:49. > :33:58.percentage of service games won is 94% for the year. That is roughly 19

:33:59. > :34:02.out of 20 service games he holds. So, you play a long 3-set match on

:34:03. > :34:23.average he will lose his serve once. Good volley. That also impacts on

:34:24. > :34:27.how you approach playing against him, thinking if this goes three

:34:28. > :34:32.sets I am only going to get one chance of breaking his serve, so I

:34:33. > :34:39.have to take it. Yes, it puts immense pressure on opponents.

:34:40. > :34:55.That was beautifully executed. Not much room for manoeuvre at the end.

:34:56. > :35:00.And that's why I have a feeling that John McEnroe is going to say, roll

:35:01. > :35:04.the dice everyone's in a while. Play a game where you just ripped the

:35:05. > :35:11.ball, rip the ball four times, and if you happen to time it well,

:35:12. > :35:16.that's the break. And now you've got opponents scared to death, scared to

:35:17. > :35:20.death to play with you. I remember when I first turned pro, one of the

:35:21. > :35:27.veteran guys told me about the guy everyone hated to play most was

:35:28. > :35:31.Arthur Ashe. Arthur had a huge serve but also went for winners on the

:35:32. > :35:37.return. So guys never thought they were in control of their own

:35:38. > :35:42.destiny. They ways felt, if after gets a go in one game, he will break

:35:43. > :35:47.me, there is nothing I can do about that. It was a horrible feeling. I

:35:48. > :35:53.remember hearing and thinking, I like that. I took that to heart

:35:54. > :36:00.probably too much. But for a guy like Raonic, who virtually never

:36:01. > :36:04.loses his serve, give it a shot, come on, but the pressure on the

:36:05. > :36:11.guy, make him try and do more than he really would be comfortable

:36:12. > :36:12.doing. He can roll the dice here, really, because Vesely has to serve

:36:13. > :36:20.to stay in this set. And if he does that we have a

:36:21. > :36:30.tie-break and then it really is anybody's game.

:36:31. > :36:37.And there's always the slightly nervous moment at 5-6, where you

:36:38. > :36:41.think it's always good to get the first point in the bag and Vesely

:36:42. > :36:47.hasn't done that. A glimmer for Raonic. More than a glimmer of

:36:48. > :37:00.sunshine, by the way. This is unheard of.

:37:01. > :37:11.As predicted by Peter Fleming. Well, no, I think he played this pretty

:37:12. > :37:30.conservatively, Raonic. Defended well.

:37:31. > :37:42.Just reiterating the point we made earlier, if you have a serve as big

:37:43. > :37:51.as Vesely's, 0- 30 is not a giant hole, just a small manhole. Which

:37:52. > :37:53.suddenly is no hole at all. Yes, but you have to hold your nerve to get

:37:54. > :38:13.out of that little predicament. A shrug of the shoulders from

:38:14. > :38:25.Raonic, like, what can I do about that? Move over! 30-30, you have to

:38:26. > :38:27.take that serve away from him, because that has to be about his

:38:28. > :38:37.favourite serve. Well played, Raonic. In control of

:38:38. > :39:16.that from the word go. Well that time, because Raonic's

:39:17. > :39:21.return was a bit short, he guessed wrongly, as it was, that Vesely

:39:22. > :39:22.would hit a backhand crosscourt. By the time he backtracked, he was out

:39:23. > :40:28.of position. Well, Vesely somehow found himself

:40:29. > :40:38.at the net. Ghosted in, I don't think he took a split step which put

:40:39. > :40:39.him off balance. It was a nice dink by Raonic. Not sure it should have

:40:40. > :41:09.been listed as an error. That was not a percentage shot to

:41:10. > :41:16.play at 5-6 and deuce. You would have to call that a brain cramp. And

:41:17. > :41:19.so here we are, after 40 minutes of play, with the first set point of

:41:20. > :41:33.the afternoon to the number three seed, Milos Raonic.

:41:34. > :41:46.Well, an opportune time for a mis-hit. Exactly John, that is

:41:47. > :41:50.exactly the trajectory it went. Irrespective, it's not how but how

:41:51. > :41:58.many and it is the first set to Raonic. SUE BARKER: We will be back

:41:59. > :42:02.on Centre Court in a few moments, but if you are just joining us, a

:42:03. > :42:07.couple of results to bring you. Good news for Andy Murray, he is through,

:42:08. > :42:13.beating Briton's number two, Aljaz Bedene. He is through to the

:42:14. > :42:18.quarterfinal 2-faced Kyle Edmund of Great Britain. That will be their

:42:19. > :42:21.first meeting. An all British quarterfinal here tomorrow. And what

:42:22. > :42:27.a battle out on Court Number One, John Isner and Gilles Muller. This

:42:28. > :42:34.is match point to Gilles Muller. This is such a huge story, he saved

:42:35. > :42:38.ten match points against John Isner. 18-16 in their second tie-break, the

:42:39. > :42:44.longer since Wimbledon 2014, which also faced John Isner. Ten match

:42:45. > :42:51.points saved by Gilles Muller and put out the big serving American,

:42:52. > :42:57.John is now. That was a battle out on Court Number One. Goes a couple

:42:58. > :43:01.of results from earlier today, and now we go back to Centre Court under

:43:02. > :43:08.some beautiful blue sky, what a lovely change. COMMENTATOR: In case

:43:09. > :43:12.you're thinking that is computer graphically enhanced, it is the

:43:13. > :43:16.colour of the sky at the moment, almost the colour of those seats,

:43:17. > :43:23.which is remarkable. We came here today thinking we might barely see a

:43:24. > :43:27.set and a half but we have not seen rain interruptions and Andy and

:43:28. > :43:33.Bedene walked on earlier on. There is another match later on, Roberto

:43:34. > :43:40.Bautista Agut against Donald Young. And Bernard Tomic is playing

:43:41. > :43:47.Fernando Verdasco. Batman is for- four. -- that map she is for- four.

:43:48. > :44:12.-- that match is Raonic beginning the second set

:44:13. > :44:24.exactly the same as he began the first.

:44:25. > :44:32.I'm surprised he did not hit that on the smash. So confident. Just power

:44:33. > :44:57.it through the opponent. When you've got a big serve like

:44:58. > :45:06.this, when you have a big serve full stop, heating it straight at your

:45:07. > :45:13.opponent is quite a good call, isn't it? The body serve especially

:45:14. > :45:20.against the guy with a two hander or right-hander, slide it in. Slide it

:45:21. > :45:30.into the body. They can't take full swing and have to block it, almost

:45:31. > :45:34.like a shot. -- almost like a cricket shot. I do enjoy your

:45:35. > :45:42.cricket analogies. Thank you very much. APPLAUSE

:45:43. > :46:03.That was a very solid opening game. Technically quite sound. Maybe

:46:04. > :46:06.Stefan Edberg would have got the racket head through the ball just a

:46:07. > :46:17.little bit more, but we're rippling there, really. -- we're quibbling. I

:46:18. > :46:24.doubt there are not things going through Vesely's mind at the moment.

:46:25. > :46:29.Like, we should be at the tie-break at the moment, not serving in the

:46:30. > :46:43.second set. He has to banish those thoughts.

:46:44. > :47:34.I don't understand that attempt, the chances of Raonic actually executing

:47:35. > :47:41.this backhand are one in ten, if that. Throw it up, Miles in the air,

:47:42. > :47:43.let the winds take it, let's see if Vesely can handle that, make him put

:47:44. > :48:12.it away. Well... Or play it like this. Quite

:48:13. > :48:21.a similar attempt that time. Put the Czech in all kinds of problems.

:48:22. > :48:25.Worth repeating if you've just joined us that Vesely is one of only

:48:26. > :48:29.three men to beat Novak Djokovic this year, Andy Murray is one of

:48:30. > :48:33.them but Lopez is the other. He didn't beat Djokovic because

:48:34. > :48:38.Djokovic retired during the game. Vesely can say he is one of only two

:48:39. > :48:43.meant to have beaten Novak Djokovic in tennis this year. That was at

:48:44. > :48:46.Monte Carlo. He is no mean performer, 68 in the world at the

:48:47. > :49:14.moment and former world junior number one.

:49:15. > :49:26.Suddenly we're back where we were at the start of the first set with the

:49:27. > :49:41.Vesely serve under pressure. Lovely sight of Queen's, 4:20pm on Thursday

:49:42. > :49:43.afternoon, almost blue skies. They are not blue any more? Bits of them

:49:44. > :50:09.are blue. That's a great put away, great put

:50:10. > :50:16.away. OK, it was worth a shot. Maybe this is why he didn't hit the

:50:17. > :50:20.previous one up in the air. Again, let's see it. Secure overhead,

:50:21. > :50:52.though. Johnny Mac will be pleased with this

:50:53. > :51:31.movement up at the net. Mr Raonic challenging a call left me

:51:32. > :51:34.a line, ball is called in. This is a slightly abortive challenge. That

:51:35. > :51:38.was genuinely unplayable, wrapped serve, the angle it was going at.

:51:39. > :51:40.You would have had to be standing by the scoreboard to have bought that

:51:41. > :51:53.back. Advantage Vesely. That's the way to do it, two aces

:51:54. > :52:22.takes the tally up to ten now. The first time we've seen a bit of

:52:23. > :52:27.emotion from the Czech. Thought he was teetering a bit there, but he's

:52:28. > :52:39.back level pegging one apiece at the start of the second set.

:52:40. > :52:48.It's always interesting talking about junior superstars and whether

:52:49. > :52:52.they are going to make the transition. He was world number one

:52:53. > :52:56.and everybody saying he was going to be the next big thing. Looking at

:52:57. > :53:00.the record books, his doubles partner when he was number one

:53:01. > :53:04.junior singles player was Oliver Golding from Great Britain, they

:53:05. > :53:08.played together at the US Open and all that sort of stuff. Doing lots

:53:09. > :53:13.of interviews and features with Oliver when he played here to three

:53:14. > :53:19.years ago. He is now effectively given the game up. There are no

:53:20. > :53:22.gimmes, you can be the best in the world at 16, 70, it's a different

:53:23. > :53:26.world when you get into the adult environment. Some people make that

:53:27. > :53:33.transition as Kyle Edmund is doing at the moment, some people just

:53:34. > :53:40.don't. To win in the juniors requires largely different skills.

:53:41. > :53:45.Than winning on the men's tour. To develop a man's game takes a lot of

:53:46. > :53:51.time, a lot of patients. And you have to take lumps along the way,

:53:52. > :53:54.learning how to win. Is it too simplistic to say talent gets you

:53:55. > :53:59.buy in the junior, what you need more than that when you get to the

:54:00. > :54:11.adult game? I think that's true in some cases. In a lot of cases.

:54:12. > :54:20.And perhaps players that are serial winners in the juniors find it more

:54:21. > :54:36.difficult to change their styles. Big serving from the Canadian.

:54:37. > :54:42.Whereas if you are always losing in the juniors it's easy, no hardship.

:54:43. > :54:51.I'll jettison that style, it's not working. But the men's game is so

:54:52. > :54:58.athletic now, these guys are so fast and strong. You have to go 20, 30

:54:59. > :55:05.shots deep in the rally to open up the point sometimes. It's too

:55:06. > :55:09.arduous for 18-year-olds. In the domain. One or two superstars,

:55:10. > :55:31.through. Not many kids are mature enough to

:55:32. > :55:35.make a dent in the men's game. Was it 50 people in the menstrual at

:55:36. > :55:40.Roland Garros? 49 players, something like that, extraordinary, the sort

:55:41. > :55:52.of thing you wouldn't have expected a decade ago. Interesting to see the

:55:53. > :55:59.strapping on Vesely's shoulder. We were talking about the hugely

:56:00. > :56:04.promising young German player, Zverev. I was confused because he

:56:05. > :56:11.was educated in Germany, Vesely. Finding some way out of that! Is a

:56:12. > :57:03.fluent German speaker. The winner of this match will play

:57:04. > :57:07.the winner of the next match here on Centre Court between Roberto

:57:08. > :57:14.Bautista Agut of Spain, the sixth seed here, and Donald Young,

:57:15. > :57:20.qualifier from the USA. I'm looking forward to that match because two

:57:21. > :57:26.players with totally different styles from these two. There'll be a

:57:27. > :57:35.lot of baseline rallies in that game. Yeah, two guys who are very,

:57:36. > :57:38.very quick around the court, so it won't be especially easy to hit

:57:39. > :57:47.winners for either one of them, yet they are both attacking players.

:57:48. > :57:54.A lot of tactics, probably, on display.

:57:55. > :58:03.This match a little more straightforward. You will be able to

:58:04. > :58:08.watch that match on BBC Two and our coverage on the red button continues

:58:09. > :58:25.until close of play each day here at Queen's. I think his options were

:58:26. > :58:29.limited once he got there. Yeah, it's a case of, I'm out of the

:58:30. > :58:32.court, I'd better make this shot perfect. Perfect is not so easy to

:58:33. > :59:00.execute. 40-0 you are in control of the game,

:59:01. > :59:06.almost ready for the next one, then it is 40-15, then 40-30. Suddenly,

:59:07. > :59:20.you will need to win this point. Vesely needs a big serve here.

:59:21. > :59:41.His 11th ace. Makes us level. Water time. I wouldn't say it is warm out

:59:42. > :59:47.there, but it's pleasant. I would say, by the way, Johnny Mac has put

:59:48. > :59:48.an excessive amount of sun block on today for the amount of sunshine

:59:49. > :00:46.that we've had. Here's a question, if you were just

:00:47. > :00:51.listening whilst watching to this match, the sound of the ball off

:00:52. > :00:56.both these two brackets is very, very different, why is that? -- two

:00:57. > :01:09.rackets. Let me listen. That wasn't the best

:01:10. > :01:13.example, but when they were trading blows from the baseline in the

:01:14. > :01:18.previous rally... It could be one of two things, either their string

:01:19. > :01:23.tensions are slightly different or just the fact one is on the other

:01:24. > :01:24.side and one is on this side, so the sound is travelling in different

:01:25. > :01:46.directions. As a general rule of thumb, if you

:01:47. > :01:52.are a big hitting, big serving die like Raonic, do you string your

:01:53. > :01:57.bracket more tightly? If you are a power player, often players will

:01:58. > :02:12.string it tighter because it gives you more control.

:02:13. > :02:22.So conversely, if you are Baghdatis or a touch player, do you string it

:02:23. > :02:27.less tightly, because it gives you the ability to manoeuvre the ball

:02:28. > :02:33.more? It is personal preference, really. Tim Henman, who wasn't the

:02:34. > :02:39.most powerful player off the ground, strung his racket very tight. He had

:02:40. > :02:44.lots of feel around the net. He had a powerful serve, but the rest of

:02:45. > :02:49.his game was very much a touch game. He strung it tight. John McEnroe, on

:02:50. > :02:57.the other hand, also very much a touch player, strung it like a

:02:58. > :03:04.sieve. It was so loose. But that gave him the field that he liked.

:03:05. > :03:17.So, you know, it's hard to make hard and fast rules. Gave himself feel he

:03:18. > :03:23.liked. I think it is the dental reasons Raonic wears a gumshield. I

:03:24. > :03:27.think it is a relaxation thing, so you don't grit your teeth. Right on

:03:28. > :03:46.cue, thank you Milos. That's a big winner crosscourt there

:03:47. > :04:58.from Vesely. That's well played by Raonic, it

:04:59. > :05:07.really is. Absolutely. Beautiful set up pass, set it low, forcing Vesely

:05:08. > :05:10.to hit up into the open quart. And mopping up on the next ball. -- the

:05:11. > :05:22.open . He's always got that to get him

:05:23. > :05:33.out of bother. He's winning 12-8 on the ace count

:05:34. > :06:09.at the moment. Just coming back to the McEnroe

:06:10. > :06:13.influence on Raonic, how much of this is going to be about not just

:06:14. > :06:19.playing tennis, but about demeanour on court, attitude to tennis life

:06:20. > :06:24.generally? I gather they've been going to art galleries and things

:06:25. > :06:30.together. Is Raonic more relaxed? He smiled when he made an error on the

:06:31. > :06:35.panel to map art of that game. Is part of McEnroe's remit to make him

:06:36. > :06:55.a bit more chilled? No, just the opposite. I think Ricardo is happy

:06:56. > :07:02.to have a bit of back up. I think both of them would like to see Milos

:07:03. > :07:15.just be a little more emotive out on the court.

:07:16. > :07:20.That is beautiful. From both sides of the net. And suddenly... Vesely

:07:21. > :07:59.has a chance. What a crisp overhead that was.

:08:00. > :08:13.You'd have thought by now Vesely would have gotten the message.

:08:14. > :08:19.A lob over Raonic's head is not going to happen too often.

:08:20. > :08:32.And suddenly from 0- 30... I suppose if you are playing the odds long

:08:33. > :08:37.enough, you work on the basis, he's going to miss one some time. Yes...

:08:38. > :08:40.That's one way of looking at it, I'm not sure if that one is going to

:08:41. > :09:14.work out percentage-wise. A big fist pump their as Raonic

:09:15. > :09:17.served followed. -- serve and volleyed.

:09:18. > :09:32.A break point against the Raonic serve.

:09:33. > :09:44.That was four over long off, really, wasn't it?

:09:45. > :10:12.That's the problem, isn't it? You have a great point... Against

:10:13. > :10:16.somebody like Raonic, and we don't have the stats here to say what

:10:17. > :10:21.percentages of break points anyone ever takes against Raonic across the

:10:22. > :10:29.duration of his career, but it isn't many. That's why he wins 94% of his

:10:30. > :10:31.service games, because he is right up at the top of the list, in terms

:10:32. > :10:50.of saving break points. Not quite sure anybody knew what was

:10:51. > :10:59.happening there. He somehow extricated himself from that.

:11:00. > :11:09.He kept his cool. Miss charged the floating shot from Vesely, thought

:11:10. > :11:14.he could charge it and take it out of the air, and realised at the last

:11:15. > :11:19.moment... -- misjudged the floating shot to stop but kept it in play,

:11:20. > :11:27.and perhaps Vesely would have liked to have done a little more with the

:11:28. > :11:33.forehand pass. Kept his balance well, that's all you can do in that

:11:34. > :11:39.situation. What a stylish finish. Zero from three is Vesely from this

:11:40. > :11:45.match so far, break points on the Raonic serve.

:11:46. > :11:53.And at no point, actually, have you really felt that Raonic has been

:11:54. > :12:05.thinking "I'm in trouble here on my serve". Raonic is at 30, 40, always

:12:06. > :12:07.a chance, always a feeling that at some point Raonic might make the

:12:08. > :12:17.breakthrough on the serve of Vesely. A very low-flying helicopter goes

:12:18. > :13:16.overhead here on Centre Court. Not quite sure why the umpire asked

:13:17. > :13:25.for a delay, but anyway, this is first serve once again.

:13:26. > :13:33.If you're sitting down in the front row, you are in line of fire, you

:13:34. > :13:36.are sitting at second slip and you have to have your hands in front of

:13:37. > :13:39.your body... There is Annabel Croft at the back, and obviously someone

:13:40. > :13:54.took it in the pins. I think whoever it was got sacked

:13:55. > :14:00.from the England team, not playing in the slips again.

:14:01. > :14:32.Second double fault from the racket of Vesely.

:14:33. > :15:05.The ball shot away as it pitched near the baseline.

:15:06. > :15:48.Slightly ambitious shot from Vesely, don't you think? Yeah, perhaps.

:15:49. > :15:58.That's a lovely touch. Raonic thought it was in.

:15:59. > :16:06.Raonic did very well to ask the question. Because the approach once

:16:07. > :16:18.again was very deep, skidded through the court. Vesely showed a lot of

:16:19. > :16:33.feel with that finish. Getting to the serious stage now, four apiece.

:16:34. > :16:50.Is that the kind of Hooper helicopter you've got? Going to

:16:51. > :16:52.Battersea! -- Uber helicopter. That was a lovely pick-up by Raonic, made

:16:53. > :17:35.that look very, very simple. This looks like another very

:17:36. > :17:50.straightforward hold for the Canadian. Which means with that ace,

:17:51. > :17:55.number nine, Vesely will have to serve to stay in the match should.

:17:56. > :17:59.STUDIO: A tense changeover for Vesely, a lot to think about. We're

:18:00. > :18:03.going to bring you news from elsewhere in the ladies

:18:04. > :18:10.championship. The Aegon classic in Edgbaston. Johanna Konta now ranked

:18:11. > :18:20.18 in the world, got revenge for her defeat. Caroline Wozniacki has gone

:18:21. > :18:26.out, beaten by her opponent. Also a first-round. And the fifth seed,

:18:27. > :18:31.Petra Kvitova, has gone out, also in three sets. That is what's happening

:18:32. > :18:34.at Edgbaston, but plenty of tennis to look forward to over the next few

:18:35. > :18:39.weeks, we're at Eastbourne from Tuesday for the ladies championship,

:18:40. > :18:43.then the big one, Wimbledon, starting 27th of June. And the Davis

:18:44. > :18:49.Cup, Serbia against Great Britain, Djokovic against Murray. On the 15th

:18:50. > :18:52.of delight from L grade. A lot to look forward to. A lot to look

:18:53. > :19:00.forward to here with Vesely serving to stay in this match. If you were a

:19:01. > :19:09.betting man do you think Murray will be in Bucharest to play in that

:19:10. > :19:13.Davis Cup match? In Belgrade? If he's in Bucharest he will be playing

:19:14. > :19:19.in the wrong match. He'll have got on the wrong plane. It would greatly

:19:20. > :19:28.enhance Serbia's chances of getting through. I hadn't thought about that

:19:29. > :19:33.too much. Think about it in a minute. I think it depends how well

:19:34. > :19:38.it goes. If he thinks Novak is going to play, I'm not sure which way that

:19:39. > :20:00.swings it. Some solid hitting from the back of

:20:01. > :20:21.the court by the Czech. Just for a second he thought that

:20:22. > :21:00.might landing, but it drifted wide. More activity overhead. As we turn

:21:01. > :21:08.our eyes to Hawk-Eye and see where the ball landed. I think Raonic

:21:09. > :21:16.knows it was wide but it's a challenge to disrupt the flow. Of

:21:17. > :21:25.Vesely. He's got two points to square things up at five apiece. One

:21:26. > :21:35.will do. This is where we were in the first set. Everybody neatly

:21:36. > :21:38.holding their serve five apiece. Raonic held, then he broke Vesely to

:21:39. > :22:14.take the first game 7-5. You would say there is a not

:22:15. > :22:17.inconsiderable incentive for the winner of this match because this

:22:18. > :22:28.half of the draw has Vesely, Raonic, Bautista Agut, Young, Gilles Muller

:22:29. > :22:31.who has put out John is not already, Tomic and Verdasco. Raonic, I'm sure

:22:32. > :22:34.they won't have discussed it because they take each game as it comes,

:22:35. > :22:37.Raonic could be eyeing the final here. Yeah, he's the favourite to

:22:38. > :22:52.come through certainly. That's very solid. Classic serve and

:22:53. > :23:41.volley, did everything right. Good wrong footing approached shot.

:23:42. > :23:53.You would expect him to go up the line. It makes it easier to cover

:23:54. > :23:55.the net. On a slippery surface, a wrong footing approach is always

:23:56. > :24:18.pretty effective. A good return from Vesely.

:24:19. > :24:22.Reiterating what Peter was saying, Raonic was heading towards the

:24:23. > :24:27.centre of the court. Hard to get back and get a ball going so far to

:24:28. > :24:35.his forehand. He still has a point for a 6-5 lead. And there was a

:24:36. > :24:47.certain inevitability about that result. Ace number nine.

:24:48. > :24:58.And the Vesely will be hoping history doesn't repeat itself here.

:24:59. > :25:06.Mac is on his feet. Sending positive energy across the court to his

:25:07. > :25:11.charge. LAUGHTER Looking like he's in WWE or

:25:12. > :25:17.something, isn't it, just about to walk into the ring. Giving the evil

:25:18. > :25:24.eye to the mechanical camera. Don't even think about it! I've got my eye

:25:25. > :25:30.on you! There is the mechanical camera. It's what we call Mac camp,

:25:31. > :25:34.it just follows McEnroe wherever he goes, he doesn't know this, but he's

:25:35. > :25:42.under surveillance from the BBC 24-7. I think he's talking about it

:25:43. > :25:51.now, I know we are talking about you! Here's the moment of truth for

:25:52. > :25:55.Vesely. Because he fell at the last, effectively in the first set, and

:25:56. > :26:00.he's got to make sure it doesn't happen again here. Best case

:26:01. > :26:04.scenario for him is a second set tie-break but Raonic knows he can go

:26:05. > :26:06.for it now, this is almost a free game, really. Can he complete what

:26:07. > :26:51.happened in the first set? Raonic was cross about that, he

:26:52. > :27:06.thought he hit it just in the far corner.

:27:07. > :27:28.Just when he needs it most, Vesely's first serve has deserted him.

:27:29. > :27:41.You've probably heard a disgruntled Raonic going, come on! I could have

:27:42. > :28:06.done more with that. And he was right.

:28:07. > :28:15.I gather that previous ball was caught by Annabel Croft in the slips

:28:16. > :28:23.as it shot off. Into the first and second row. There she is. Or

:28:24. > :28:26.otherwise costume did she catch it? There was a smattering of applause,

:28:27. > :28:33.I don't know if we have video evidence of this. That's better for

:28:34. > :28:44.Vesely, that's what he wanted. Get into a tie-break.

:28:45. > :28:51.We had an 18-16 tie-break earlier today between Gilles Muller and John

:28:52. > :28:55.Isner. Which was the longest tie-break since Juan Mata Wimbledon

:28:56. > :29:00.a couple of years ago which also feature John Isner. There is no John

:29:01. > :29:03.Isner here but we have two big men who served 22 aces between them so

:29:04. > :29:26.far and we can expect a few more in the course of this tie-break.

:29:27. > :29:38.These guys have played one tie-break in their career. At Roland Garros on

:29:39. > :30:06.clay. Raonic won that one. Vesely was cross about that shot.

:30:07. > :30:15.Wow. I was about to say, that was a fabulous serve, fabulous drive into

:30:16. > :30:23.the corner, fabulously put away, until then. Come on! That's why you

:30:24. > :30:45.put the ball back into play whenever possible. Almost a miraculous miss.

:30:46. > :30:53.It's a mini-break, and given Raonic's serve, the pressure really

:30:54. > :31:11.is an Vesely now, to somehow get back to level pegging.

:31:12. > :31:21.But that was a lovely return, right at Raonic's feet. He was so adept

:31:22. > :31:27.previously, but on this occasion the ball goes long, so 2-2.

:31:28. > :31:33.Suddenly Vesely feels a bit better about that missed volley at the net,

:31:34. > :31:47.marginally. There's only one time he will

:31:48. > :31:50.marginally feel better, and that is if he gets to seven first in this

:31:51. > :31:56.tie-break. Raonic hit that forehand like he

:31:57. > :32:28.hated the ball. Taking no chances this time. And of

:32:29. > :32:35.course, they change ends. It was bizarre watching that match earlier

:32:36. > :32:40.on today between John is and Muller. It was 15-15 on Centre Court when

:32:41. > :32:49.dead Danae was playing Murray, and at the same time it was 15-15 in the

:32:50. > :32:55.tie-break on Court One. -- when Aljaz Bedene was playing Murray.

:32:56. > :33:18.You actually feel the crowd are really in gauge in this match, you

:33:19. > :33:25.feel they fancy a third set here. -- engaged.

:33:26. > :33:32.A couple of loan umbrellas up, which must be very irritating for the

:33:33. > :33:44.people sitting behind them when it's not raining. Another big serve.

:33:45. > :33:53.And just no margin for error here now. One mistake here from either

:33:54. > :34:02.men and you kind of feel it will hand it to the other.

:34:03. > :34:15.Another huge serve. You heard Johnny Mac shouting "Good serve". It was so

:34:16. > :34:17.quick, the speed serve machine at the end didn't actually register it,

:34:18. > :34:48.but it was very, very rapid. That was bold. It was bold, I liked

:34:49. > :34:51.the way he stepped into the court and allowed him to take the ball at

:34:52. > :35:20.the peak of the bounce. Put it back into play. That was just

:35:21. > :35:26.a loss of concentration, tennis the backhand off the line. And all of a

:35:27. > :35:31.sudden, it's a set point the Jiri Vesely to take us into a third and

:35:32. > :35:35.decisive set. Where does he go here, Raonic? I don't know! Down the

:35:36. > :35:57.middle. In the end it was a very

:35:58. > :36:02.conservative serve, landed about 2-macro-3 feet from the centre

:36:03. > :36:16.service line. Put it in play with power, and that was enough.

:36:17. > :36:22.Well, in the world of European Championships, this is effectively

:36:23. > :36:28.now a straightforward penalty shoot out. Miss and you're gone, as far as

:36:29. > :36:34.this second set is concerned. First up, Milos Raonic.

:36:35. > :36:52.And he went straight at the keeper, which is often a very good tactic.

:36:53. > :37:03.This is when the pressure swings 180 degrees straight to the other end of

:37:04. > :37:10.the court. It's match point to Milos Raonic.

:37:11. > :37:25.And he's got it! One opportunity was all he needed, and he hammered it

:37:26. > :37:32.down the sideline. Milos Raonic of Canada is through in straight sets

:37:33. > :37:39.against Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic, 7-5, 7-6. The crowd on

:37:40. > :37:44.their feet and Raonic's box are on their feet. He is through to a

:37:45. > :37:47.quarterfinal meeting against the winner of Roberto Bautista Agut and

:37:48. > :37:53.Donald Young, which is coming on here next. That was a pretty

:37:54. > :37:56.impressive performance. A high-quality match, both players

:37:57. > :38:00.served well. I think Raonic will be pleased with his performance. He did

:38:01. > :38:07.a number of things quite effectively. Vesely will rue a

:38:08. > :38:14.couple of easy balls he missed in that match, that allowed Raonic to

:38:15. > :38:23.either get back into it, or establish dominance. But such is the

:38:24. > :38:29.way matches are often won on this surface, it is just a point or two

:38:30. > :38:34.here or there. You cannot afford to give easy ones away. It's going to

:38:35. > :38:39.be a very different kind of match or Raonic, whether he plays in the next

:38:40. > :38:48.round, whether it be Donald Young or Bautista Agut. He won't be facing

:38:49. > :38:56.cannonball serves but a lot more all court kind of play. The light from

:38:57. > :39:01.his goal friend, as well. -- delight from his girlfriend, as well. I get

:39:02. > :39:08.the sense that Milos Raonic is benefiting from the Stardust that

:39:09. > :39:15.McEnroe is sprinkling. Yeah, it's always nice to be the focus of

:39:16. > :39:25.attention. OK, fine, everyone's looking over at the player box more

:39:26. > :39:33.than they normally might, but Milos is front and centre in that whole

:39:34. > :39:39.scene. I'm sure it's fun for him. There's the score, 7-5, 7-6.

:39:40. > :39:45.Doing lots of selfies and signing tennis balls on the grounds and all

:39:46. > :39:56.that sort of thing, which is one of the great things here at Queen.

:39:57. > :40:03.Two hard-fought sets, what was your verdict? I was fortunate, I was

:40:04. > :40:06.efficient coming forward. I'm feeling better and better as each

:40:07. > :40:10.match goes on for that I look forward to tomorrow's challenge. It

:40:11. > :40:14.is very early in your working relationship and everyone is asking

:40:15. > :40:17.you about it, but is there any particular part of your game John

:40:18. > :40:24.McEnroe has identified, that you're working an, that is beneficial? A

:40:25. > :40:30.little better coming forward and more vocal. Roberto Bautista Agut or

:40:31. > :40:34.Donald Young in the next round, what are your thoughts? Both difficult

:40:35. > :40:39.matches, both played well this week. I will have to play well, whoever it

:40:40. > :40:44.is. I will have to serve well, be efficient. Well done into the

:40:45. > :40:51.quarterfinals, Milos Raonic everybody. Thank you very much. SUE

:40:52. > :40:55.BARKER: Well done to Milos Raonic. He broke serve to win the first set

:40:56. > :41:01.and then came through a very tight second set, much to the delight of

:41:02. > :41:04.coach John McEnroe. He was coming forward, attacking, and what a way

:41:05. > :41:08.it was to finish with that blistering winner. McEnroe will be

:41:09. > :41:12.absolutely delighted. He will be working with Raonic right the way

:41:13. > :41:18.through Wimbledon. Raonic leads he can win on grass. McEnroe thinks he

:41:19. > :41:23.is one of those that can win Wimbledon. John Lloyd is with me. It

:41:24. > :41:29.seems like McEnroe will be very happy, won't he? He has come through

:41:30. > :41:33.two tough matches. A tough first round against Kyrgios and then this

:41:34. > :41:37.once. He came through some tough positions. I like the way he is

:41:38. > :41:41.playing. Let's face it, he could have lost a Kyrgios and all of a

:41:42. > :41:45.sudden John McEnroe... All this magic built up and all of a sudden

:41:46. > :41:48.loses the first round, where does he go from here? But now in the latter

:41:49. > :41:53.stages of the tournament and playing very well. Night he could play on a

:41:54. > :41:58.dry court. With Kyrgios it was delayed overnight and then bad

:41:59. > :42:04.conditions. Kyrgios said in his match that Raonic was not giving him

:42:05. > :42:08.any time on the ball. It seems like McEnroe's effect is to attack and

:42:09. > :42:14.that is what he was doing today. He is such a presence on court. The

:42:15. > :42:20.serve, we talked about that since he started. One of the great serves of

:42:21. > :42:26.all time. He is good at the net, so why not impose yourself? He is a big

:42:27. > :42:31.fellow, has a big reach. A good attacking shot to come in on. When

:42:32. > :42:35.you have someone of his athletic ability coming in, great forehand to

:42:36. > :42:42.finish the match... You want him in, you don't run in staying at the back

:42:43. > :42:46.of the court. He's not the best defender by any means, that is his

:42:47. > :42:52.weakness, so don't defend, attack. That's what he's doing. He's got the

:42:53. > :42:57.big weapon, the big serve. You just feel maybe it's the movement and the

:42:58. > :43:02.coming forward, and knowing how to finish off the points at the net he

:43:03. > :43:06.needs to add. He's never going to be the McEnroe kind of soft hands and

:43:07. > :43:10.all the subtle stuff, that is not his game. I think McEnroe can give

:43:11. > :43:14.him some short cuts to getting in their, be confident you can get in,

:43:15. > :43:19.rather than waiting. Maybe don't always wait until the perfect shot

:43:20. > :43:23.when you are on the baseline. The serve takes care of itself, and I'm

:43:24. > :43:27.sure they are even working on that. McEnroe will say that is the most

:43:28. > :43:31.important part. But the other stuff around it, if he can impose himself

:43:32. > :43:35.when he is returning serve and get that feeling he's coming at you the

:43:36. > :43:41.whole time, it's tough to break him, tough to pass him and I think as

:43:42. > :43:44.McEnroe said, he's definitely one of the six that can win Wimbledon and

:43:45. > :43:49.here as well. You would fancy him in that bottom half of the draw,

:43:50. > :43:54.Bautista Agut or Donald Young. That was Raonic going through and earlier

:43:55. > :43:58.today on Centre Court Andy Murray went through against Aljaz Bedene.

:43:59. > :44:03.This is how he finished it off, just 83 minutes. You were calling this

:44:04. > :44:07.much, how impressed were you with Andy today? Very impressed, very

:44:08. > :44:11.different match to the first round. Didn't have a target like you did

:44:12. > :44:17.against Nicolas Mahut. I think Aljaz Bedene played very well, kept him

:44:18. > :44:20.out there, is a very good rallies. Murray served well. Got a bit

:44:21. > :44:24.irritated on a couple of things, as he normally does, but more positive,

:44:25. > :44:28.channelled positively. I think it was a good, high-quality match and

:44:29. > :44:33.he will be delighted with the two matches he has played. Two very

:44:34. > :44:38.different styles. Aljaz Bedene added moments and played well, but you got

:44:39. > :44:45.the feeling when Murray got to 3-3, he raises the gives and that was the

:44:46. > :44:48.difference between the two? When you play against someone like Murray,

:44:49. > :44:54.you have to keep going outside your comfort zone, so you take chances.

:44:55. > :44:59.Sometimes you get away with it for awhile, but eventually Murray's

:45:00. > :45:04.depth is so good. He knows if he doesn't hit almost the perfect shot

:45:05. > :45:08.he will come back with interest. I thought he played very well, as

:45:09. > :45:12.well. He looks to me like he feels he belongs out there with the top

:45:13. > :45:15.players now. That is important. He lost, but are pretty close match,

:45:16. > :45:20.closer than the score indicated. It's moving up the rankings. While

:45:21. > :45:24.you were in the commentary box there was a marathon going on on Court

:45:25. > :45:30.Number One, this was match point for Muller putting out John is in. Had

:45:31. > :45:35.to save ten match points against the big American, and won it in the

:45:36. > :45:41.tie-break. The second tie-break was 18-16. How will John Isner feel

:45:42. > :45:47.tonight? He is used to it, isn't he! If there is one player used its him.

:45:48. > :45:50.Some of those match point were on his serve forced stop I thought it

:45:51. > :45:54.would be a close match but not that close. Muller is a very good grass

:45:55. > :46:01.court player. That was a nasty match for him to play.

:46:02. > :46:06.Those tie-breaks, in match play, it is exhausting to come through them.

:46:07. > :46:10.I know that it is a grass court tournament and it is not as bad as

:46:11. > :46:15.other services, but mentally, it will be really draining. After

:46:16. > :46:20.losing those match points, it will be devastating. John Isner is a good

:46:21. > :46:27.tie-break player because he plays them in every single match. He

:46:28. > :46:33.should have sneaked that with the pointy hat, but he has had another

:46:34. > :46:38.bad week. The tennis continues, and the players are on the court for the

:46:39. > :46:42.next match. The last one on the scheduled today with Roberto

:46:43. > :46:47.Bautista-Agut up against Donald Young of the United States. We are

:46:48. > :46:53.running for another 40 minutes or so. We will be showing you that one

:46:54. > :46:55.before we move the red. It is such a busy summer of sport on the BBC. The

:46:56. > :47:24.countdown to Rio is on. Jessica Ennis-Hill is back on top of

:47:25. > :47:35.the world. That is a huge jump. Laura Trott, world champion. The

:47:36. > :47:41.Olympic Games now just 50 days away. Andy Murray, defending the big

:47:42. > :47:47.champion. Roger Federer, Stan Wawrinka and Martina Hingis will

:47:48. > :47:52.represent Switzerland. So tennis will be there, but one sport that is

:47:53. > :47:56.tried and failed to get into the Olympics is squash. The man that has

:47:57. > :47:58.dominated it in recent years is Britain 's Nick Matthew, the

:47:59. > :48:08.three-time world champion. He's been near this week. And John bravely

:48:09. > :48:14.donned his whites to challenge him. You have played in heaven knows how

:48:15. > :48:21.many tennis courts and rackets courts. This is the first time you

:48:22. > :48:24.have set foot in a real tennis court, a singular and the curious

:48:25. > :48:31.port. What are your first impressions? It completes the set of

:48:32. > :48:36.racket sports. First impressions, little bit daunting, little bit

:48:37. > :48:42.Royal. We are decked out in all white. We have got the rackets.

:48:43. > :48:47.Funny little racket. It looks like a familiar weapon but it feels

:48:48. > :48:51.anything but familiar in my hands. I am nervous as to how I am going to

:48:52. > :48:57.get on. I should be OK but I know that it will not be as easy as that.

:48:58. > :49:02.This, dear viewer, is a first. The first time that Nick has ever picked

:49:03. > :49:07.a real tennis ball. It is like a cross between a tennis ball and a

:49:08. > :49:12.golf ball and it doesn't bounce. You have got to land it on the roof on

:49:13. > :49:16.the other side of the net when you serve and try to get the second

:49:17. > :49:24.round is to be as close to the back wall as is humanly possible. From a

:49:25. > :49:27.former will squash champion, three times, hitting a real tennis ball

:49:28. > :49:33.with a real tennis racket for the first time in his life. Is he any

:49:34. > :49:41.good? I remember being coached with the technique, hopefully I have got

:49:42. > :49:56.this. Too hard. Not hard enough, that time. You've cracked it. World

:49:57. > :50:00.champion in two years? You will have to teach me the rules first. Squash

:50:01. > :50:06.can be like chess but this is a different ball game. You often play

:50:07. > :50:11.matches that are more than two hours, you play rallies of 100 shots

:50:12. > :50:14.or more. How fit do you think you have to be to play squash in

:50:15. > :50:20.comparison to other sports like tennis, for example? The obvious

:50:21. > :50:26.difference with tennis is, sometimes those guys can be up there for five

:50:27. > :50:31.hours. Obviously you have got longer breaks between points, perhaps,

:50:32. > :50:37.slightly longer between sets, in squash, probably shorter, more

:50:38. > :50:42.intense periods, with a 60-70 shot rally then another one. So it is

:50:43. > :50:51.thick and fast, the pace of the game is just, it has grown so much in the

:50:52. > :50:54.10-15 years I've been on the tour. The court feels a lot bigger than it

:50:55. > :51:01.looks from this height. Especially a glass court. The ball stays into the

:51:02. > :51:08.corners a lot more. You how to run out all the corners a lot more. It

:51:09. > :51:13.is a tough sport on the body. People talk about Andy Murray 's Boot Camp

:51:14. > :51:16.he does in the winter to get himself ready for the Australian Open and

:51:17. > :51:20.the season beyond. Do you have a period when you are in the gym

:51:21. > :51:24.working yourself to oblivion? The off-season is crucial in any sport.

:51:25. > :51:27.That is what sets you up for the season and beyond. You might only

:51:28. > :51:33.get small windows when you can top things up. Those book camps are

:51:34. > :51:36.horrible, but you sort of love the pain in a weird sort of way because

:51:37. > :51:41.you know the confidence that it gives you. I can see in tennis there

:51:42. > :51:46.are some similarities with squash. You need that strength, that power,

:51:47. > :51:53.but also the stamina and flexibility to go alongside them and eight

:51:54. > :51:57.tactical, technical brain as well. You have got those challenges. It is

:51:58. > :52:09.impossible to get all those right. You feel like an all-rounder, and it

:52:10. > :52:15.is a tough balance to achieve. Do you have a lingering annoyance that

:52:16. > :52:22.squash has never permeated, if you like, the glass ceiling of public

:52:23. > :52:25.awareness? Absolutely. With Rio 2016 fast approaching, that hollow

:52:26. > :52:31.feeling hits me again, like it did in London 2012. You realise that you

:52:32. > :52:36.have forgotten that squash isn't an Olympic sport. People ask how your

:52:37. > :52:40.preparations are going. The general public awareness is that squash is

:52:41. > :52:45.an Olympic sport, so having to explain it over and over again that

:52:46. > :52:50.you are not, it can make you feel quite downbeat, downcast. The fight

:52:51. > :52:54.goes on. We feel like we deserve it, and that the sport has come so far

:52:55. > :53:06.in the last decade that we are ready to embrace the Olympics now. There

:53:07. > :53:10.we are. How far has it come in the last decade? What advances,

:53:11. > :53:17.specifically, as it made? Two things in particular, the first thing was

:53:18. > :53:21.the tour, which was very common wealth based and the prize money was

:53:22. > :53:32.way down on other sports, especially tennis. Since I have been competing,

:53:33. > :53:36.the tour, ten years ago, a $50,000 tournament and if you were 12 of the

:53:37. > :53:40.world you wouldn't even qualify and now that is the first prize for a

:53:41. > :53:44.lot of events. It has some way to go to reach tennis and now equal prize

:53:45. > :53:47.money on the men's and women's tour as well. The ladies tour as well.

:53:48. > :53:53.The ladies tour has taken off. The biggest thing is probably the TV.

:53:54. > :53:56.Squash will struggle as a televisual sport. It doesn't showcase is

:53:57. > :54:03.dynamic nature and the ball is sometimes hard to ik up in amongst

:54:04. > :54:10.the movement of the players and the walls, but with HDTV, the sport now

:54:11. > :54:13.looks fantastic on TV. Whereon the indoor tennis courts, but you have

:54:14. > :54:19.played squash in here. In here and on Centre Court. We have the World

:54:20. > :54:28.Series finals at Queen's for a few years. We were on Centre Court, we

:54:29. > :54:32.had a bubble. It is just a great club for racket sports. It has got

:54:33. > :54:37.to be one of the few places to have real tennis, tennis and squash as

:54:38. > :54:40.well. It just has a great deal. Coming in seeing the tennis, those

:54:41. > :54:45.familiar faces, it feels like an institution of racket sports in the

:54:46. > :54:51.UK. The great thing about squash, rain never stops play. We have some

:54:52. > :54:56.open-air venues around the world now, places like the pyramids in

:54:57. > :55:01.Cairo, one tournament in Hong Kong harbour they put the glass court out

:55:02. > :55:04.only for the semifinals and finals. It was the first time in a decade

:55:05. > :55:08.that I had made it out to the semifinals and during the first

:55:09. > :55:12.match, for the first time at that time of year in Hong Kong for 20

:55:13. > :55:18.years. I think I lost that match purely because of how much it meant

:55:19. > :55:25.to me. I was so desperate to play in that harbour, that setting. There we

:55:26. > :55:31.are, easy game. This is a rude question but I will ask anyway.

:55:32. > :55:33.Three-time world champion, you are the most unbelievable athlete, but

:55:34. > :55:39.are there are times when you think, I wish I'd done something else and I

:55:40. > :55:42.might have got more recognition? Certainly not real tennis. You have

:55:43. > :55:51.given me a lesson there, thanks for that. I will not lie, London 2012,

:55:52. > :55:55.that was the lowest for me. My one regret is an athlete was not being

:55:56. > :56:02.at London 2012. But squash has given me such a great life. It suits my

:56:03. > :56:08.personality, one-on-one, closed door, no prisoners. And I love that

:56:09. > :56:13.feeling, dynamic sport, 1 million miles an hour, you have to think

:56:14. > :56:17.your way round as well. I have seen some amazing locations and met

:56:18. > :56:22.amazing people, so I would not change it for a minute. Shame that

:56:23. > :56:26.he never got to experience the Olympic Games but certainly a career

:56:27. > :56:30.to be proud of. Lovely to see Nick enjoying the real tennis and other

:56:31. > :56:35.sports here at Queen's Club. A few spots of rain coming, I'm sorry to

:56:36. > :56:40.say, although the radar map looks clear. Hopefully more play to, and

:56:41. > :56:48.we are on the air until 6pm and after that on the Red Button. This

:56:49. > :56:55.is the opening game and we can join Peter Fleming and Andrew Cotter.

:56:56. > :57:01.Optimistic about the weather. It isn't going to be too bad. Quick

:57:02. > :57:35.double fault from Donald Young. I found a bit suspect, I don't know

:57:36. > :57:39.about you, that John Inverdale was telling everybody who would listen

:57:40. > :57:48.that he won that match just down to fitness alone. A very fit man

:57:49. > :57:53.indeed, John Inverdale! It is a bright start from Donald Young.

:57:54. > :58:01.Followers of tennis will know that he was the best in the world as a

:58:02. > :58:06.junior. Great talent. He turned pro very young. At 16. He found it a bit

:58:07. > :58:37.of a struggle. He has his hands full today against

:58:38. > :58:59.Roberto Bautista-Agut. The Spaniard, the world number 16 now.

:59:00. > :59:38.Already won twice this year, Bautista Agut. The Donald Young en

:59:39. > :00:40.route. And in Bulgaria, at the start of February, as well.

:00:41. > :00:53.Bautista Agut is a noisy fellow when he serves. Just operating at a

:00:54. > :00:57.slightly higher level than Donald Young in their careers at the

:00:58. > :01:02.moment. Donald Young down to 75th in the world, and you start to find

:01:03. > :01:15.yourself tougher draws and out of some tournaments.

:01:16. > :01:23.Yes, and Donald Young, in fact, would do well to try and just copy a

:01:24. > :01:26.bit of what Bautista Agut does. The Spaniard perhaps hits through the

:01:27. > :01:45.ball just a little more. I get the impression that Donald

:01:46. > :01:49.Young really doesn't understand grass well enough. Because

:01:50. > :01:55.physically, he has the sort of game that might just trouble some

:01:56. > :01:58.opponents. He moves very well. He can take the ball early, and is

:01:59. > :02:18.quite competent at the net. But he's throwing in an untidy

:02:19. > :02:35.service game. All sorts of danger for him.

:02:36. > :02:45.It was a clever return of serve. Bautista Agut moved out wide before

:02:46. > :02:47.Young even hit that ball. He was waiting for it, even though the

:02:48. > :03:01.serve was superbly placed. As was that. Two of those three

:03:02. > :03:23.break points disappeared. Job not yet done.

:03:24. > :03:26.Given away in the end by Donald Young. Bautista Agut has the first

:03:27. > :03:40.break. Another example of the calibre of

:03:41. > :03:46.Bautista Agut, beat the former champion Sam Querry in the first

:03:47. > :03:50.round. A big serving man and a real talent on this surface. Three

:03:51. > :03:54.tie-break. There is Donald Young. We talked about youngsters who have

:03:55. > :03:59.real talent and don't quite fulfil that or carry it into the senior

:04:00. > :04:05.ranks. He won the Australian Open as a very young man, a 15-year-old boy

:04:06. > :04:10.and then Wimbledon a couple of years later, in 2007, the junior title.

:04:11. > :04:16.Didn't really have any more worlds and conquer. Then he turned pro, and

:04:17. > :04:20.because he is not a big man, I think he had no power, and he found that a

:04:21. > :04:25.bit of a shock and couldn't live with the adults. Yes, he and his

:04:26. > :04:30.parents also, I think, were of listening believing the hype a bit

:04:31. > :04:37.too much. A lot of people thought he should be playing futures

:04:38. > :04:40.tournaments, because in a really important thing to remember with

:04:41. > :04:46.developing young players, winning is a habit. You have to develop that

:04:47. > :04:50.habit. Donald, at a very young age, just thought, I'll be the next Boris

:04:51. > :04:56.Becker or Michael Chang. I'm just going to take the tennis world by

:04:57. > :05:01.storm. He lost a lot of matches and lost his confidence. And from there,

:05:02. > :05:14.it's a very difficult road. It's something we've talked about at

:05:15. > :05:17.length, with the different approaches taken. It's happening in

:05:18. > :05:22.the United States, a lot of players will go to college and instead. But

:05:23. > :05:29.if you're winning, you maintain that confidence and you develop. Yes,

:05:30. > :05:37.because Donald was so good at such a young age, to go to college probably

:05:38. > :05:41.would have been a step backwards. Not backwards... It just might have

:05:42. > :05:45.been too long a progression. But he missed playing futures and

:05:46. > :05:49.challengers, that's where he should have been.

:05:50. > :06:20.Went straight to the big-time, and got knocked back.

:06:21. > :07:01.The umpire leaves no one in doubt as to who is in charge.

:07:02. > :07:09.It's a good response here from Young. It is getting darker again.

:07:10. > :07:42.Beautiful play by Young, having been broken, he's answering in the very

:07:43. > :07:47.best possible way. Did very well. This is the sort of point that

:07:48. > :07:54.Donald Young plays as well as most players, better than most. Takes the

:07:55. > :07:56.ball early, give his opponent very little time to react, defends the

:07:57. > :08:12.net. Crisis for now averted by Bautista

:08:13. > :09:27.Agut. A little bit of a battle for the

:09:28. > :09:48.Spaniard, but gets there in the end. Milos Raonic waiting for the winner

:09:49. > :11:15.of this one. He has just seen off Vesely.

:11:16. > :11:27.What a contrast, that service game to his last one.

:11:28. > :11:36.Mentioning the sort of progress of Donald Young. He is coached by his

:11:37. > :11:42.father, Donald Young Senior, and his mother. Almost classic... It

:11:43. > :11:47.happened so often, that their parents had a bit of a falling out

:11:48. > :11:51.with the authorities with the US tennis Association, because they

:11:52. > :11:58.said they thought Donald should be improving this, and his parents went

:11:59. > :12:02.a different way. One of the thing base said he needed to improve was

:12:03. > :12:06.his strength and conditioning. Last year in particular he really started

:12:07. > :12:09.to improve that area of things. Again, when you get into the

:12:10. > :12:14.professional ranks, you realise you can't just get by on the talent that

:12:15. > :12:19.got you there as a junior. There is far more to it than that.

:12:20. > :12:24.Yes, it wasn't a great situation. I think a lot of mistrust between the

:12:25. > :12:28.US tennis Association, who were trying to do well for Donald, and

:12:29. > :12:36.his parents, who didn't want to let go. I think the USTA... Each thought

:12:37. > :12:43.that each other were not handling him well.

:12:44. > :12:53.In the end I think Donald just wasn't ready, just wasn't ready to

:12:54. > :12:58.make that step up. He's maturing a lot over the last few years, and is

:12:59. > :13:16.now establishing himself in the top 100.

:13:17. > :13:25.Bautista Agut a very, very consistent player. What he does well

:13:26. > :13:31.is once he gains the upper hand in a rally, he maintains that. It's not

:13:32. > :13:36.as though he'd just punts the ball back into play and runs, he runs

:13:37. > :13:41.very well, but... He will press his advantage.

:13:42. > :13:48.Bautista Agut doubting it, but it was the machine that beeped in the

:13:49. > :14:36.ear of the umpire. Can just reaching for their coats as

:14:37. > :14:49.we watch that one, 80 six miles an hour from Donald Young. The are some

:14:50. > :15:02.drops of rain coming down. The head groundsman there.

:15:03. > :15:10.One thing to watch with Donald Young, you can easily show his

:15:11. > :15:14.frustration on court. That is just part of him. It has gone dead out

:15:15. > :16:48.here. The flags are limp. He keeps his nose in front, the

:16:49. > :16:56.Spaniard. We were talking about his consistency, Bautista-Agut, and his

:16:57. > :17:03.ranking of 16 in the world is pretty accurate. He has played well in the

:17:04. > :17:08.last four Grand Slam events. He is a proper player. Wasn't the cleanest

:17:09. > :18:03.strike, but it is good. Not quite on Peter Fleming 's humour

:18:04. > :18:04.wavelength there. I don't know quite what has happened. It has been a

:18:05. > :18:23.long day. No one is! He has been forceful, imposing

:18:24. > :18:37.himself in his last two service games. There we are. Just one break

:18:38. > :18:40.adrift for Donald Young, the qualifier, against Roberto

:18:41. > :18:49.Bautista-Agut, the number six seed. The Spaniard still just about in

:18:50. > :18:56.front. Healy to 4-3. -- he leads. You could say... Sorry, Peter, we

:18:57. > :18:59.will come back to you and a moment, whilst they are battling on Centre

:19:00. > :19:06.Court they have just finished on Court Number One, Bernard Tomic has

:19:07. > :19:10.defeated Fernando Verdasco 6-7, six - four, 6-4, the first time since

:19:11. > :19:21.February that the Australian has won back-to-back matches in a

:19:22. > :19:26.tournament. He goes through to face Gilles Muller, who has just beaten

:19:27. > :19:30.John Isner. So that there's Bernard Tomic against Gilles Muller

:19:31. > :19:38.tomorrow. Two matches complete, and still out on Court Number One, this

:19:39. > :19:43.one on going under dark skies. We will be heading off to the Red

:19:44. > :19:48.Button shortly where coverage continues from 6pm. If you want to

:19:49. > :19:55.continue watching, it will go on to the Red Button. Peter, what were you

:19:56. > :20:02.going to say? I can't remember! I believe I was going to say, Donald

:20:03. > :20:08.Young, a good example of the importance of the first serve in the

:20:09. > :20:11.tennis game today. So difficult to maintain a high level without a

:20:12. > :20:34.dominant first serve. On the baseline, the ball is called

:20:35. > :20:42.in. The first double four from Roberto

:20:43. > :22:30.Bautista-Agut. -- double fault. I think we might have overheard

:22:31. > :22:33.Donald Young seeing we haven't been going for that shot the whole time,

:22:34. > :22:41.meaning the whole weekend when he came through qualifying. Use so

:22:42. > :22:54.solid from the back of the court. And so quick. -- he is so solid.

:22:55. > :22:55.Donald Young will have two fine something. Serving to stay in this

:22:56. > :23:27.set. -- have to find something. Nicely disguised. Bautista-Agut (

:23:28. > :23:34.face and Donald Young bit on it. He thought he was going to hit a drop

:23:35. > :24:34.shot, he took a step in. -- opened the racket face. Nearly.

:24:35. > :25:03.Oh, dear. Bautista-Agut was on his way to his chair. Now back out.

:25:04. > :25:25.He's down, but he's OK. I think. That is a scary moment. I think he

:25:26. > :25:40.is all right, but if you really jah any part of the chain, right up to

:25:41. > :25:45.your hip... The Spaniard, fine to continue. It is a hold for Donald

:25:46. > :26:02.Young. Just that early break from Roberto

:26:03. > :26:06.Bautista-Agut, the number six seed, that sees him in front and in a

:26:07. > :26:13.moment, he will serve for the first set. He has just done enough,

:26:14. > :26:20.controlled it. A few early mistakes from Donald Young. This quarterfinal

:26:21. > :26:28.place against Milos Raonic is the price. At the moment things suggest

:26:29. > :26:49.it will be Roberto Bautista-Agut. That is a dubious prize, perhaps.

:26:50. > :26:59.Ouch! Which direction are those clouds blowing? I don't think that

:27:00. > :27:04.they are moving in any direction at the moment. Supposed to be coming up

:27:05. > :27:21.from the south today. Bautista-Agut serving for the set. Challenge from

:27:22. > :27:43.Roberto Bautista-Agut. The ball was called out.

:27:44. > :27:51.Well, that is out, and so are we. We are finishing our time on BBC Two.

:27:52. > :27:55.If you want to continue watching the tennis it continues on the Red

:27:56. > :28:01.Button. The news here is that Andy Murray is through, and he is

:28:02. > :28:06.through, eating the British number two, Aljaz Bedene. He won in

:28:07. > :28:13.straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. He hadn't played a British player on tour for

:28:14. > :28:17.ten years, now he has to face two because tomorrow, it will be Kyle

:28:18. > :28:23.Edmund in the quarterfinals. We will be on the air with BBC Two tomorrow

:28:24. > :28:27.at one o'clock but here at Queen's, Andy Murray one hour Battle of

:28:28. > :28:43.Britain to stay on course for title number five. Goodbye.

:28:44. > :28:49.The England Men's and the England Women's cricket teams
