:00:41. > :00:47.Hello and welcome to the Queen's Club in the heart of West London.

:00:48. > :00:50.This prodigious tournament signals the start of the grass court season,

:00:51. > :00:56.and that means Wimbledon isn't far-away. But these a gone

:00:57. > :01:00.Championships shouldn't be considered just a warm up for S W

:01:01. > :01:06.19. Winning here is a highlight in any one's career. It is also one of

:01:07. > :01:10.the best loved tournament by the players, well organised and with the

:01:11. > :01:16.courts just about perfect. So no great surprise that we have another

:01:17. > :01:30.exceptional line-up in 2017. These players are here and ready to play.

:01:31. > :01:48.# Here comes the summer # Here comes the summer

:01:49. > :02:01.COMMENTATOR: That is a beautiful shot. What a shot from Cilic.

:02:02. > :02:09.# Here comes the summer COMMENTATOR: The supreme

:02:10. > :02:16.performance. A first-class tournament.

:02:17. > :02:23.What a line-up, a truly international field. But someone is

:02:24. > :02:27.missing, I hear you say. It is our very own King of Queen's, Andy

:02:28. > :02:31.Murray. I'm pleased to say he is back here as defending champion,

:02:32. > :02:33.world number one, and has his sights firmly on lifting that famous trophy

:02:34. > :02:54.for a record extending sixth time. UMPIRE: Game, set and match, Murray.

:02:55. > :02:59.COMMENTATOR: The first British winner at Queen's in 71 years. A

:03:00. > :03:02.brilliant winner of Andy Murray, he is the champion here again. His

:03:03. > :03:25.third title at the Queen's Club. Title number four Bex and a bit of

:03:26. > :03:32.history here in West London. Five Championships at the Queen's Club

:03:33. > :03:37.for Andy Murray. What a record he has, and what a few years it has

:03:38. > :03:44.been, starting in 2009, how he has changed over the years. Here he is

:03:45. > :03:49.just before, practising today, going through the motions with his fitness

:03:50. > :03:55.trainer Matt Little, building up the strength, going for those returns of

:03:56. > :04:00.serve. It was a wonderful final last year when he beat Milos Raonic, and

:04:01. > :04:06.he went on three weeks later to win Wimbledon. Will history repeat

:04:07. > :04:10.itself again? He is not the only person who is back here at the

:04:11. > :04:17.Queen's Club, John Lloyd and Andrew Castle are with me once again. How

:04:18. > :04:25.he has changed since 2009, not just a haircut, but he has toned himself

:04:26. > :04:30.up, he is this complete athlete now. He is so powerful, you look at him

:04:31. > :04:33.on court and think he will never get tired, and you can see that in the

:04:34. > :04:38.fifth set, his opponent starts wilting and he is still as strong as

:04:39. > :04:42.he was in the first set, he just looks like he can go on forever.

:04:43. > :04:46.Perfect preparation he has had coming into the grass court season,

:04:47. > :04:50.he looks amazing. And he wasn't looking so amazing before the French

:04:51. > :04:54.Open, it was considered at the end of last year when he won five

:04:55. > :04:58.tournament in a row and ended up as world number one, that effort

:04:59. > :05:02.drained him, a new baby at home, life changes, and then at the

:05:03. > :05:05.beginning of this year, some illness, perhaps not quite the

:05:06. > :05:12.physicality. Use say illness, Shingles drains you for a long time,

:05:13. > :05:17.even when you recover. So going into the French Open, he had to get some

:05:18. > :05:22.wins and grind some matches out and feel the heat of competition, which

:05:23. > :05:25.he did. A couple of wins at the beginning, they were not the best

:05:26. > :05:30.Andy Murray, but he got the winning habit, so he is ready now to go

:05:31. > :05:34.ahead and try to defend here and Wimbledon, and who's to say he is

:05:35. > :05:41.not the favourite? And just one of those sessions with Matt Little,

:05:42. > :05:45.watching him. It was practising his return of serve. Just don't go near

:05:46. > :05:48.these guys were now training, they give off an aero physicality that

:05:49. > :05:56.even in the old days few of them did. Ilie Nastase was supreme, Ivan

:05:57. > :06:02.Lendl had bad air, and Andy Murray certainly one of them. And showing

:06:03. > :06:06.how difficult it is to move from the clay onto the grass and what is

:06:07. > :06:10.needed to succeed on grass, it is a different game. It is a different

:06:11. > :06:15.game, but we have that extra week of play now. Before we had that two

:06:16. > :06:22.weeks, it was the most ridiculous thing in our sport that we had that

:06:23. > :06:26.Grand Slam, the French, then two weeks and you are Wimbledon, but it

:06:27. > :06:30.is totally different now that you have that extra week, even though

:06:31. > :06:33.the grass bounces higher, it is still different than any other

:06:34. > :06:37.surface, and the players appreciate it, but you have to do different

:06:38. > :06:48.training for grass, it is a totally different surface than the others.

:06:49. > :06:53.Borg never had any trouble going from clay to grass! Here is what

:06:54. > :06:59.Andy had to say. I have played some of my best tennis here over the

:07:00. > :07:02.years. They have made some changes this year, the Centre Court is

:07:03. > :07:06.bigger, looks great, the courts are always in perfect condition, so it

:07:07. > :07:09.is a great way to kick off the grass court season and it has helped me

:07:10. > :07:15.prepare for Wimbledon every year in my career. Winning any tournament is

:07:16. > :07:22.great, but one as historical as this and as strong as this as well, the

:07:23. > :07:29.field this year is top-quality. Unfortunately a couple of late

:07:30. > :07:33.withdrawals with Rafa and Del Potro, but Saddam is here, he beat me in

:07:34. > :07:43.the French and made the final there. -- Stan is here and he beat me in

:07:44. > :07:46.the French, and Dimitrov. This is always a big boost going into

:07:47. > :07:49.Wimbledon. There is a lot of pressure at this time of the year, a

:07:50. > :07:55.lot of pressure and attention, but we also have the scope of being able

:07:56. > :08:01.to get home and sleep in my own bed and have the support of friends and

:08:02. > :08:05.family at all of my matches, so that is the best part about this period

:08:06. > :08:08.of the year, it is nice to be home for a few weeks.

:08:09. > :08:13.We will talk a little more about Andy Murray, but we are going to

:08:14. > :08:19.head out to Centre Court right now where Adrian Mannarino and

:08:20. > :08:22.Jo-Wilfried Tsonga battle. Nick Kyrgios is always one to watch, and

:08:23. > :08:26.then Kyle Edmund finishes the line-up on Centre Court today, we

:08:27. > :08:32.will finish the chat in a moment, but this is going a bit quicker than

:08:33. > :08:35.we were thinking, there is a back injury, we hear, from Adrian

:08:36. > :08:38.Mannarino, so let's join this match live. To bring us up to date, Peter

:08:39. > :08:51.Fleming and Andrew Cotter. ANDREW COTTER: He is serving all

:08:52. > :08:55.right here, Manna Reno, but he hasn't been looking too comfortable,

:08:56. > :09:00.and he has had that treatment for what looked like an upper back

:09:01. > :09:16.injury. Seems to be moving OK. A couple of service games now for

:09:17. > :09:21.Mannarino where he has held to love. PETER FLEMING: And often when you do

:09:22. > :09:29.have an upper back issue, the muscles are in spasm, you can move,

:09:30. > :09:33.but fast, jerky movements are not at all comfortable, so it inhibits your

:09:34. > :09:40.shotmaking sometimes, and inhibits your self belief, and that is what

:09:41. > :09:45.seems to have taken the biggest hit for Mannarino today, he doesn't seem

:09:46. > :09:59.to believe that he can make inroads into Tsonga's defences.

:10:00. > :10:12.It is just wide. It was right on the line. I heard a call. That is

:10:13. > :10:17.beautiful from Mannarino. One of the best points on the match, which has

:10:18. > :10:19.been a little bit hit and miss. Tsonga is in control, but he hasn't

:10:20. > :10:47.had to be at his very best. And I think that is an aspect of

:10:48. > :10:53.grass court tennis that suits Tsonga. Because his service so

:10:54. > :10:58.dominant and he can end points so quickly as he did there, he can

:10:59. > :11:05.often just relax during an opponent's service game, not get too

:11:06. > :11:32.wound up. And it doesn't really hurt him.

:11:33. > :11:52.He is consistently up over 130 mph now with his Serbs. -- serves.

:11:53. > :12:01.And again, stringing together a good few points, Tsonga, in the first set

:12:02. > :12:06.in particular there were some good from Tsonga, but a lot of loose

:12:07. > :12:10.stuff as well, just feeling his way into his grass court season. Second

:12:11. > :12:13.set he is much more consistent, and he is not too far away, you suspect,

:12:14. > :12:29.from a place in the next round. Of course, Tsonga is in the top

:12:30. > :12:37.quarter, so that is a potentially very difficult quarterfinal matchup

:12:38. > :12:45.for Andy Murray should both of those win their first two matches. This

:12:46. > :12:48.event has had a couple of late call office that Andy Murray was

:12:49. > :12:55.highlighting in particular, of Nadal, Del Potro, but there is still

:12:56. > :13:02.verdict, the Rinker, Milos Raonic, Nick Kyrgios. He plays today on

:13:03. > :13:08.Centre Court against Donald Young, and since it became a 500 event, it

:13:09. > :13:20.was always a great event, but it does attract great yet in the field.

:13:21. > :13:30.Didn't even mention Marin Cilic, John Isner, Sam Querrey in there as

:13:31. > :13:38.well. Mannarino serving to stay in it.

:13:39. > :13:50.Sam Querrey, if he beats the British wild card Cameron Norrie in the

:13:51. > :13:57.first round, you can assume he would be Murray's second-round opponent,

:13:58. > :15:29.where Murray plays Aljaz Bedene in his first match.

:15:30. > :15:33.Tsonga seems to be hitting at things here casually, he knows he has got a

:15:34. > :16:08.service game to come in any case. But he might still do it early. Yes,

:16:09. > :16:12.and as relaxed as he looks, there is no question that he would far prefer

:16:13. > :16:14.to win it right here rather than having to go through the ordeal of

:16:15. > :16:35.serving for it. Mannarino was in a position of some

:16:36. > :16:54.strength in this service game, but Tsonga now with match point.

:16:55. > :17:03.And there it is, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga the first winner on Centre Court at

:17:04. > :17:07.these Aegon championships, and untroubled, unruffled moves into the

:17:08. > :17:10.next round. The number five seed will be given tougher tests than he

:17:11. > :17:16.has faced today from Adrian Mannarino. A smile from Jo-Wilfried

:17:17. > :17:26.Tsonga, a very popular winner here on Centre Court, to get us under

:17:27. > :17:33.way. Really good start from Joe Tsonga. Adrian Mannarino just didn't

:17:34. > :17:38.quite have it today, didn't have the belief that he could challenge

:17:39. > :17:44.Tsonga. Yes, Mannarino has better than that, and perhaps the injury

:17:45. > :17:49.for which he was treated was more than a factor than we thought,

:17:50. > :17:52.because that is a bit of a thumping from Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, through to

:17:53. > :18:06.the second round. He will face either Gilles Muller or as a

:18:07. > :18:21.-- Basilashvili of Georgia. Andy Murray is looking to make it six

:18:22. > :18:24.wins here at Queen's Club, but Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, finalist here in

:18:25. > :18:29.the past, is through to the next round, and again, he will be very

:18:30. > :18:33.happy that he hasn't spent too much time, he has had a run out, got some

:18:34. > :18:36.grass under his feet, hasn't built up too much of a sweat, save a bit

:18:37. > :18:53.of energy. Still very, very popular, the

:18:54. > :18:58.32-year-old Jo-Wilfried Tsonga enjoying himself here at the Queen's

:18:59. > :19:02.Club, playing here for the first time since 2014, he has given it a

:19:03. > :19:09.miss the last couple of years. The man who reached the final five years

:19:10. > :19:16.ago where he lost to Andy Murray, and every chance of going that far

:19:17. > :19:21.again this year. So, safely through to the next round after that win

:19:22. > :19:27.over Adrian Mannarino, and ready now to share his thoughts with John

:19:28. > :19:31.Inverdale. Many congratulations, how was that

:19:32. > :19:39.for a first go on the grass this year? It was a good match, I played

:19:40. > :19:43.pretty well. I started well, but he came back and played strong, and I

:19:44. > :19:48.had to play my best tennis to go over him, so yes I am really happy

:19:49. > :19:52.today, happy to be here in London, when the weather is like this it is

:19:53. > :19:56.just an amazing city, so I will enjoy it. Everybody in the crowd,

:19:57. > :19:59.and a bigger crowd this year, bigger Centre Court, everybody was aware of

:20:00. > :20:06.the need for them. What was it like on the court itself? As you can see,

:20:07. > :20:11.I sweat a lot, but yes of course, the most important when it is hot

:20:12. > :20:17.like this to drink a lot, so I give you advice! Free advice from

:20:18. > :20:22.Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, hydrate! One of the big differences, the weather on

:20:23. > :20:26.the first day last year was terrible, and year ago, in the last

:20:27. > :20:30.you, you have become a dad of course, so your life is changed. Are

:20:31. > :20:35.they travelling with you? How has that changed for you? They are not

:20:36. > :20:39.travelling with me this week, but most of the time they are with me.

:20:40. > :20:44.It is difficult to be far from home, far from my wife and my kid, it is

:20:45. > :20:49.not easy, but I deal with it, and I hope I will be able to play good

:20:50. > :20:53.tennis this week to get back the trophy. It is a good start, well

:20:54. > :20:58.done, good to see you back here. Thank you.

:20:59. > :21:02.SUE BARKER: Great entertainers, great to see him back here at the

:21:03. > :21:06.Queen's Club, a comfortable win for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, seeded five East

:21:07. > :21:10.championship, and more I'd attended to come, Grigor Dimitrov with his

:21:11. > :21:14.ninth straight appearance here up against Ryan Harrison from the

:21:15. > :21:17.United States. Then Donald Young up against another great entertainer,

:21:18. > :21:22.who knows what will happen in that match with Nick Kyrgios. And Kyle

:21:23. > :21:34.Edmund finishes the line-up up against Denis Shapovalov. The last

:21:35. > :21:43.time they met was at that Davis Cup, the deciding rubber with that

:21:44. > :21:49.terrible accident when Shapovalov hit the ball in temp and hit the

:21:50. > :21:54.umpire in the eye. And they are now friends. Yes, he learned a painful

:21:55. > :21:58.lesson there, he is a very talented player, and grass is going to be

:21:59. > :22:03.different, he will be dangerous on this surface. That was a tough

:22:04. > :22:06.lesson for him to learn, but he's a young kid and he busy didn't mean

:22:07. > :22:16.it, he meant to hit the ball up into the air, he got his trajectory

:22:17. > :22:21.wrong, ... I was speaking to him, they are laughing about it now, but

:22:22. > :22:25.of all the players, if you are a silly young boy, which every young

:22:26. > :22:30.boy who plays tennis is of course one point, smack it somewhere where

:22:31. > :22:38.there is definitely no body, which is up in the air. You can't bear to

:22:39. > :22:41.watch it, actually. It was quite a serious injury and I think it

:22:42. > :22:47.requires surgery, but I'm glad he has recovered. The Davis Cup coach

:22:48. > :22:51.from Canada still looking after Shapovalov, but that was definitely

:22:52. > :22:58.a very poor moment. Dear member when Tim Henman hit the line girl,

:22:59. > :23:01.literally just a terrible mistake. Just an accident, one of those

:23:02. > :23:07.horrendous accidents. He is a great guy. And a great talent. He learned

:23:08. > :23:13.a big lesson possibly out there, didn't he? He did, and potentially a

:23:14. > :23:17.great player. He is one of these players that you look at and you see

:23:18. > :23:20.particularly on grass, he won Junior Wimbledon and you see the talent he

:23:21. > :23:24.has in his game, and if he learns to harness that power and not go for

:23:25. > :23:28.winners on every ball which he tends to do at the moment, he will be a

:23:29. > :23:30.future top ten, and on this surface, a very dangerous player. Not quite

:23:31. > :23:40.yet but he will be. And looking at the players here, we

:23:41. > :23:49.have talked about Andy Murray, Kyle Edmund will play Denis Shapovalov at

:23:50. > :24:04.the bottom of the draw. Are we saying Shapovalov? Shapovalov. We

:24:05. > :24:10.will take our cues from Sue! Nicholas Malouf, he can play a

:24:11. > :24:16.little as well! If you look at this draw here, he got match point

:24:17. > :24:20.against Andy Roddick that day, said the tournament staff here have put

:24:21. > :24:24.together an unbelievable tournament, and the tournament and its

:24:25. > :24:28.reputation. I looked at the standard of the qualifying which was

:24:29. > :24:31.absolutely amazing. Jeremy Chardy is a qualifier here in this tournament,

:24:32. > :24:37.normally you wouldn't be far off being seeded. And Herbert who he

:24:38. > :24:46.plays against is an incredibly gifted player, so a 32 draw. And the

:24:47. > :24:54.Julien Benneteau, a good doubles player. Great matches right from the

:24:55. > :24:56.word go, and I can't remember a first day like this before when you

:24:57. > :25:00.look at the order of play anything, they could all be semifinals and

:25:01. > :25:05.finals as far as I'm concerned. This is the top half, and equally, where

:25:06. > :25:09.do we start? Andy Murray will play Aljaz Bedene, and then Sam Querrey,

:25:10. > :25:15.former champion here. Talk about danger men that Murray has got to

:25:16. > :25:21.face. You have Gilles Muller, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Cilic and Isner,

:25:22. > :25:26.that could go on all night, nobody will lose serve there! Johnson is a

:25:27. > :25:28.good player, and then at the bottom you have Nick here is who is

:25:29. > :25:34.starting to show the maturity that in some ways we hope he will do.

:25:35. > :25:50.That top half is unbelievable. And that tricky Tipsarevic against

:25:51. > :26:01.Troicki, he elected to go pro a year early, he is the singles champion,

:26:02. > :26:07.21 years of age, a good player. This is Norrie, he hasn't spent a lot of

:26:08. > :26:09.time is out there, he went to college, he was stagnating here

:26:10. > :26:13.because he was at the National Tennis Centre, it didn't suit him,

:26:14. > :26:19.went to America, great move, and now he is the NCAA singles champion,

:26:20. > :26:26.side anything Sam Querrey will have it all his own way by any means. And

:26:27. > :26:31.Harrison, he is your player. He came in the last minute, he won the

:26:32. > :26:36.singles on the doubles, and he just won the French Open doubles last

:26:37. > :26:42.week, and he is now top 40 I believe, he was the Americas they

:26:43. > :26:46.cope, the pressure was a bit much on him, now he has come back, loves the

:26:47. > :26:51.game, he has matured and he is dangerous, that will be a dangerous

:26:52. > :26:55.match today. And he was the player of team tennis, the most valuable

:26:56. > :27:00.player? He won the singles, doubles, was most by label player. Dan Evans

:27:01. > :27:09.poll that, he was in my team, and Ryan Harrison kept my job for

:27:10. > :27:18.another year! He just fell into your lap! He won it for me. Dealer who

:27:19. > :27:23.most valuable coach of the year was? That is just inherited, isn't it? I

:27:24. > :27:29.have a huge ring, but it is said Bakic can't even get on my finger, I

:27:30. > :27:32.will show it you next time. Speaking about rings on fingers, Ryan is

:27:33. > :27:36.newly married this year, married to Lauren, I have just been speaking to

:27:37. > :27:48.her. Talk about a great influence on him. I used to play his old man in

:27:49. > :27:51.college, Harrison's auld. That old? We can hear some applause from

:27:52. > :27:57.behind here on Centre Court, the players are making their way out,

:27:58. > :28:04.and there is your man, and many fans here at Queen's Club.

:28:05. > :28:11.He was always the favourite player. It was wonderful, at the beginning

:28:12. > :28:14.of the year, you felt he made a breakthrough, winning Brisbane and

:28:15. > :28:20.getting to the Australian Open semis but it has not quite been built on.

:28:21. > :28:24.Every year you just keep thinking it is going to be his year and he is

:28:25. > :28:28.going to find the missing pieces to win that Grand Slam and you keep

:28:29. > :28:33.having false hopes. I hope he does win one, I love his game, one of the

:28:34. > :28:38.most elegant players on tour and one of the nicest guys. How great for

:28:39. > :28:43.the sport if he won a Grand Slam and you keep thinking if it is his year.

:28:44. > :28:52.Players mature at different ages, you can't say they are done by the

:28:53. > :28:54.age of 25, we can see with Wawrinka and Federer still going strong. This

:28:55. > :28:59.might be his year. He certainly has the weapons. When he smacked Andy

:29:00. > :29:05.Murray out of Wimbledon in three straight sets, I thought he would do

:29:06. > :29:10.that in that year in 2014 but he lost a semifinal to Djokovic on a

:29:11. > :29:13.very windy day which made good tennis difficult. But when

:29:14. > :29:21.conditions are right, he can be unplayable. He came on the next-door

:29:22. > :29:25.court the other day with Jamie Baker and it was fabulous. We have plenty

:29:26. > :29:29.to talk about, we haven't even touched on the fact that Rafael

:29:30. > :29:35.Nadal is not here, injured after the French Open. And Juan Martin Del

:29:36. > :29:40.Potro also not here but they will be back at Wimbledon. Still a wonderful

:29:41. > :29:44.line-up and I am sure the tournament director is absolutely delighted,

:29:45. > :29:47.Stephen Farrow is with John Inverdale. You can't guarantee this

:29:48. > :29:51.year 's tournament is going to be better than ever but it is bigger

:29:52. > :29:57.and we can see the new Centre Court. How proud I view of the changes you

:29:58. > :30:01.have done? Incredibly proud, with the weather like this, looking out

:30:02. > :30:08.at Centre Court and it looks fantastic. We have added 2600 seats

:30:09. > :30:12.and gone up to a capacity of 9500 and added a lot of extra facilities

:30:13. > :30:17.around the site for the public and hospitality and sponsors and it

:30:18. > :30:22.looks tremendous. Much more of a stadium the link. One of the great

:30:23. > :30:26.things about Queen's was the homely feel. How hard is to keep that

:30:27. > :30:30.balance? If you look at Centre Court right now we still have the

:30:31. > :30:34.clubhouse as a centrepiece. There are very few if any thoughts on the

:30:35. > :30:38.tennis calendar anywhere in the world which would match this for its

:30:39. > :30:43.beauty and intimacy. What has been interesting with the reaction of a

:30:44. > :30:48.lot of players, they have said, wow, it looks amazing. Some players have

:30:49. > :30:52.come in and I've pointed it out that we've expanded and they have said,

:30:53. > :30:54.have you? As far as they are concerned we still have the same

:30:55. > :30:59.atmosphere so we are pleased with how it looks. They were living in

:31:00. > :31:04.that zone! The one thing you have done this year is improving the

:31:05. > :31:08.weather! After last year, that was the big thing we had to improve on!

:31:09. > :31:16.Before we did the stand we made sure we cleared that up! Joking aside

:31:17. > :31:20.from in 34 degrees of heat there are health concerns for some of the

:31:21. > :31:24.crowd. That is absolutely right and we have been quite clear on the

:31:25. > :31:29.messages we are put out inside the ground and before spectators come,

:31:30. > :31:33.things like wearing sunscreen, our hat, drinking plenty of water. We

:31:34. > :31:36.installed more public taps yesterday so people could fill up their water

:31:37. > :31:39.bottles and we urge everybody to take precautions but having said

:31:40. > :31:44.that, we would much rather have it like this than how it was this time

:31:45. > :31:50.last year! And somebody I must mention who is not here to take

:31:51. > :31:57.advantage, to is about Ian and what he meant to Queen's Club. He was the

:31:58. > :32:00.tournament director from 95 until 2007 and this tournament gets better

:32:01. > :32:05.and bigger every year but we are very cognisant of the tournament

:32:06. > :32:09.that we are standing on the shoulders of the great work done by

:32:10. > :32:14.people for us and he did great work in establishing the reputation of

:32:15. > :32:18.this event and our thoughts are very much with him and his family and

:32:19. > :32:22.friends. We have his wife and daughters with us on final stake and

:32:23. > :32:28.we are very proud of Ian and are very proud to have them with us. And

:32:29. > :32:33.a final question come up to over 9000 now, is that the limit or can

:32:34. > :32:39.Queen's get bigger? Currently our site limit is 10,500 this league

:32:40. > :32:45.health and safety and emergency evacuation, we had to be cognisant

:32:46. > :32:51.of those. At the moment certainly this is as big as we can take it but

:32:52. > :32:55.9500, we are the biggest Centre Court for the ATP 500 tournaments,

:32:56. > :32:59.one of the biggest ones outside the Masters Series so we are big enough

:33:00. > :33:06.for now. And maybe some keep shining. I hope so! Indeed, a

:33:07. > :33:10.tournament loved by the players and much of that is down to Stephen

:33:11. > :33:18.Farrow and his team who do such a great job. We are here until 6pm

:33:19. > :33:23.every weekday on BBC Two. Covered on the BBC sport website and on the red

:33:24. > :33:30.button starts earlier every day at 12pm. And then from Monday the

:33:31. > :33:39.following week we are at Eastbourne for the Aegon International. Also

:33:40. > :33:43.next week and new for this year we have coverage of the qualifying

:33:44. > :33:48.rounds for Wimbledon on the BBC sport's website like events service.

:33:49. > :33:52.We will have key matches from each day and they will also be available

:33:53. > :33:58.to watch on your television via the red button depending on your digital

:33:59. > :34:01.and satellite provider and then from Monday July the 3rd, the 2017

:34:02. > :34:06.Wimbledon Championships get underway in all their glory and we will have

:34:07. > :34:11.full coverage on all the BBC formats. A lot of tennis coming up,

:34:12. > :34:16.what they four weeks we have and let's hope the sun shined all the

:34:17. > :34:23.way through! The players will be loving it, I hope the fans brought

:34:24. > :34:26.their fans with them! And plenty of water as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga said,

:34:27. > :34:33.maybe not what they are serving in the hospitality tent! You know this

:34:34. > :34:39.young man very well, how is his game going to match up against Dimitrov?

:34:40. > :34:43.He has a lot in his game, Ryan Harrison, a big serve and a big

:34:44. > :34:48.forehand and he moves well. He is defending better than he used to, at

:34:49. > :34:56.one stage he was a bit one paced but he has changed his game a lot and

:34:57. > :35:03.tidied up his volleying. He has worked on that a lot and he won the

:35:04. > :35:10.French Open only last week in the men's doubles. The pressure is off

:35:11. > :35:13.on him now. He took a bit too much about being the next big hope of

:35:14. > :35:17.American tennis and they put a lot of pressure on you when you get that

:35:18. > :35:22.sort of reputation and if you don't live up to it they give you a lot of

:35:23. > :35:25.stick in the press. He has become his own man now, he is married, and

:35:26. > :35:29.he just wants to be the best he can and I think there is a good future

:35:30. > :35:35.and he can move up the rankings a lot. He is very talented. I don't

:35:36. > :35:41.know what he has done with his short! He obviously doesn't own an

:35:42. > :35:48.iron! But he is quite a fiery player as well, how many racket did he

:35:49. > :35:55.break at Indian Wells? Four and he did the same thing a few times at

:35:56. > :36:00.Team Tennis! I am hoping he did not hit me with one! He gets very fired

:36:01. > :36:05.up but he is a good fellow and he's confident, almost cocky but not in a

:36:06. > :36:10.bad way. He is very short in himself and you have to be that if you're

:36:11. > :36:16.going to be in the world's top 50. He has that in him and this is not

:36:17. > :36:20.an easy match for Dimitrov. Looking at the draw, what we have seen and

:36:21. > :36:25.how strong it is and how difficult it is to break through in the men's

:36:26. > :36:31.game now. It is absolutely brutal. Even watching the challengers, let

:36:32. > :36:35.alone the lower ranked tournaments, you can see the standard. You talked

:36:36. > :36:40.about Wimbledon qualifying, go and watch that and you can see the

:36:41. > :36:44.players there fighting to get into the draw, the standard is

:36:45. > :36:49.unbelievable in the men's game now. You will have to make your way, a

:36:50. > :36:52.quick dash for John to the commentary box where Andrew is

:36:53. > :36:54.already there and we're looking forward to this, it should be a bit

:36:55. > :37:04.closer than the last. All yours. Thank you, Sue, bright sunshine for

:37:05. > :39:32.the first round and then the trough serving. -- Dimitrov serving.

:39:33. > :39:42.A dead net cord to start this match for Ryan Harrison but Dimitrov being

:39:43. > :39:43.tested in the first game. He has gained a point to get his nose in

:39:44. > :39:58.front. -- game point. And that is nicely

:39:59. > :40:05.done. With the tournament, John Lloyd, being a 32 draw, there is no

:40:06. > :40:09.easing into it. Slightly longer time between the French Open and

:40:10. > :40:13.Wimbledon but the players know exactly where they stand when they

:40:14. > :40:19.look at draw like this, no chance of coming in and coasting. No. That

:40:20. > :40:29.extra week practising on the grass has been so good. Well over six foot

:40:30. > :40:34.tall, Grigor Dimitrov, just a really well conditioned athlete, superb

:40:35. > :40:41.flexibility. Ryan Harrison, slightly stockier athlete himself. He has got

:40:42. > :40:45.with the most natural service actions imaginable, sort of pigeon

:40:46. > :40:50.toed and loose wrist and rolled around the place but a very gifted

:40:51. > :41:03.player and I am so glad he is finally achieving his potential.

:41:04. > :41:14.He looks in good shape as well. He has a younger brother, Christian

:41:15. > :41:16.Harrison, every bit as talented. He has had six surgeries but he is 350

:41:17. > :41:41.in the world. Grigor Dimitrov, a lot of players

:41:42. > :41:47.will say I love going here or there, wherever they have to be but for

:41:48. > :41:51.Dimitrov, because of the chances that Chris Kermode, the then

:41:52. > :42:05.tournament director, gave him, he really does love coming here.

:42:06. > :42:14.I remember Chris commode being given a fair amount of grief for the

:42:15. > :42:23.wildcard he gave to Dimitrov -- Chris Kermode. And when the

:42:24. > :42:27.Bulgarian did win the tournament, he went over and gave Chris his racket

:42:28. > :42:29.at the end. He is back for another tilt at this title and is looking

:42:30. > :42:49.fantastic already, I can tell you. That didn't look so fantastic! Got

:42:50. > :42:55.the timing wrong on that one a bit! It is the noise of the racket as

:42:56. > :42:59.much as anything else. I enjoy watching Ryan Harrison but when

:43:00. > :43:06.Grigor is in full flow there is hardly a better site in the game. I

:43:07. > :43:11.agree. And the women in my house enjoy watching him play, and Nick

:43:12. > :43:14.Kyrgios another later on. Certainly some exciting tennis to be played on

:43:15. > :43:37.the first day of these championships.

:43:38. > :43:45.You look at the way he plays, just in this short period, when he is in

:43:46. > :43:52.full flow, you just think, why hasn't he won a Grand Slam? Does he

:43:53. > :44:00.believe in himself enough? I think that is the big key. He hit 60

:44:01. > :44:04.winners past Nadal in that five-hour semifinal in Australia to start the

:44:05. > :44:13.year and still lost it, one of the great matches.

:44:14. > :44:20.It was rather overshadowed by the final between Federer and Nadal but

:44:21. > :44:24.the semifinal between it Dimitrov and Nadal was one of the most

:44:25. > :44:28.captivating matches I have ever seen. Unusual to get two matches in

:44:29. > :44:33.one tournament that you could say were probably in the top ten matches

:44:34. > :44:42.of all time, back-to-back matches, incredible. That is not nice when

:44:43. > :44:45.you serve and you don't have any time to get ready for the next shot.

:44:46. > :44:57.That was a big forehand from Harrison. 100 mph return. Is that

:44:58. > :45:12.what it was? Hawk-Eye coming up with all this stuff.

:45:13. > :45:19.Practising next door to this bloke, he was playing with Jamie Baker at

:45:20. > :45:22.Wimbledon, a beautiful day and we were trying to put the ball back to

:45:23. > :45:30.each other. It's frightening, isn't it! It is intimidating, it is the

:45:31. > :45:35.noise of the racket. If somebody was coming up, you would think, that

:45:36. > :45:43.court, OK, the other court is slow motion! I play there as well and you

:45:44. > :45:48.watch them and you just go, really?! They hit it that hard?! And the

:45:49. > :45:53.answer is yes and they do not miss. It is unbelievable tennis these

:45:54. > :45:57.days. I young man you will enjoy watching later, Shapovalov, who will

:45:58. > :46:04.be playing Kyle Edmund fourth match on. He was watching Dominic Thiem

:46:05. > :46:09.against Rafael Nadal and he defeated, is this tennis?! It is

:46:10. > :46:16.almost like table tennis! -- he tweeted. Exactly. Not much wind

:46:17. > :46:21.today, plenty of heat for the spectators, it is a beautiful day

:46:22. > :46:26.and the big East stand, as the sun goes down in the West behind the

:46:27. > :46:32.clubhouse, they really are going to feel the heat in that stand. But

:46:33. > :46:39.9500 people, totally different. Fantastic stadium. And this whole

:46:40. > :46:46.arena is not very big. You look at it when it is lying fallow. It has

:46:47. > :46:50.always been a very picturesque court but the people who built this

:46:51. > :46:55.beautiful club originally, if they could come back and see this now

:46:56. > :47:00.they would be amazed. They would also go, what's that? It's an

:47:01. > :47:06.aeroplane! Heathrow is just down the M4.

:47:07. > :47:14.There is Chris Kermode, ATP boss and former tournament director here.

:47:15. > :48:05.Doing another big deal! That is so good. A bit lucky,

:48:06. > :48:12.really, a good lunch from Dimitrov -- lunge. There was not much Ryan

:48:13. > :48:16.Harrison could do about that, he'd just had to bump it up and what

:48:17. > :48:28.happens next is the big forehand crosscourt.

:48:29. > :48:38.How well they see moving? It is so good. Is it my imagination or does

:48:39. > :48:44.he look the player to beat? It is day one. He is gliding, I love the

:48:45. > :48:48.way he snuck into the net, Harrison going to hit a ground stroke and he

:48:49. > :48:52.was onto the net and hit that up in Vietnam's sleek and an easy volley

:48:53. > :49:04.to put away. Trouble here already for Harrison. -- hit that up in the

:49:05. > :49:11.air. He did not play a bad game, either, Harrison, and he lost his

:49:12. > :49:13.serve to 15. He looks hungry for success, carrying himself with the

:49:14. > :49:19.air of a man who deserves it as well. A clenched fist to Dani

:49:20. > :49:24.Vallverdu, fought so long coach to Andy Murray and still great friends

:49:25. > :49:29.-- for so long. He went over to Tomas Berdych's camp which caused

:49:30. > :49:30.some consternation but has been with Grigor Dimitrov now for about a year

:49:31. > :50:04.or so. There is Dani Vallverdu. Alongside

:50:05. > :50:11.Andy Murray for so many years including at the Academy in Spain.

:50:12. > :50:19.He was number three college player in the United States at one point.

:50:20. > :50:23.Mr Dimitrov is challenging the call on the right baseline, the ball was

:50:24. > :51:22.called in. Open racket face, crosscourt

:51:23. > :51:26.half-volley drop attempt! Of a sliding ball! This time Ryan

:51:27. > :51:30.Harrison saw him coming in so he had enough time to get that chip and

:51:31. > :51:31.nice and low and that is a tough shots to make from that area of the

:51:32. > :52:54.court. Dimitrov backs up the break of serve

:52:55. > :52:58.with a hold, 4-1. Things are going well for the last man other than

:52:59. > :53:11.Andy Murray to win here, that was back in 2014 when he beat Feliciano

:53:12. > :53:17.Lopez 6-7, 7-6, 7-6. They have a great history of matches here,

:53:18. > :53:23.Raonic had the final on his racket last year. I can't remember the

:53:24. > :53:30.details in the second set. Dimitrov 4-1 up here. Ryan Harrison certainly

:53:31. > :53:37.not out of it. On the right-hand side there is Lauren Harrison,

:53:38. > :53:44.Ryan's wife. They got married in Austin, Texas where they make their

:53:45. > :53:48.home now. A wonderful day. And a rather beautiful wedding ring which

:53:49. > :53:56.Ryan chose himself and he got it right, according to Lauren! Did he?

:53:57. > :54:07.She is a trained journalist from New Jersey.

:54:08. > :54:25.There you go. Shape, weight, size and cut, it is all there! She was a

:54:26. > :54:30.tennis player at the University of North Carolina as well. On the road

:54:31. > :54:32.now quite a lot of the time. Her sister is on the tour, isn't she?

:54:33. > :54:54.Yes. She is from New Jersey but she has

:54:55. > :54:57.never watched The Sopranos. That is very odd, you have to be worried

:54:58. > :55:10.about someone who hasn't watched The Sopranos!

:55:11. > :55:25.That is impressive. He is not giving Ryan Harrison any time to

:55:26. > :55:40.That was good serve and volley, he had to change something up. Just to

:55:41. > :55:42.change it up, he's not playing badly but he is coming up against someone

:55:43. > :56:57.in Dimitrov that looks so sharp. Whoops. He's OK. The first few days

:56:58. > :57:02.on grass are always a little nerve-racking, especially towards

:57:03. > :57:19.the end of the day when a little dew gets on the court, moisture in the

:57:20. > :57:28.top surface there. Good hold. A bit of tennis history for Ryan Harrison

:57:29. > :57:31.this year, actually. After winning a challenger, he then won in Memphis,

:57:32. > :57:36.the first player ever to win a challenge and then a tour event in

:57:37. > :57:39.successive event, that is a tremendous effort, as well as

:57:40. > :58:40.winning the French Open doubles, as you were saying, John.

:58:41. > :59:33.It has changed a bit over the years, Queen's Club. How old were you when

:59:34. > :59:37.you first came here? This was very much the centre of British tennis,

:59:38. > :59:42.the LTA was in one corner from while, then the other corner. For

:59:43. > :59:45.this tournament, it has always grown, with stands going in, but to

:59:46. > :59:50.fit nine and a half thousand people around this, it is a remarkable

:59:51. > :59:59.construction job, and it takes many, many weeks to put it up. A little

:00:00. > :00:02.quicker to take it all down. Queen's had a position, when you are two

:00:03. > :00:05.weeks before a Grand Slam, which have a Grand Slam it is the perfect

:00:06. > :00:10.position to have a tournament, because the players want practice.

:00:11. > :00:15.But rather than sit on that fact and go about their way, they have

:00:16. > :00:19.improved every year, and they have had to. There are so many great

:00:20. > :00:25.tournament is now in the world that the facilities are so fantastic, the

:00:26. > :00:29.players and spectators now expected, quite rightly so. You look at Indian

:00:30. > :00:33.Wells, it is staggering, the building and the Centre Courts and

:00:34. > :00:36.stadiums that they have there, and Queen's, you have to keep with the

:00:37. > :00:40.times, and that is what they have done, they have done above that, and

:00:41. > :00:43.that is why the players think it is the best tournament on the circuit

:00:44. > :00:46.at this level, it is because they listen to what the players want on

:00:47. > :00:50.the spectators, and every year they do something to add to that

:00:51. > :01:11.pleasure. These days, entertainment pounds, dollars, they are hard to

:01:12. > :01:13.come by, so you have to make this a great occasion the players and

:01:14. > :01:15.spectators. 9500 in this Centre Court, so plenty of room to walk

:01:16. > :01:22.around on the outside courts with everything that that has to offer.

:01:23. > :01:38.Speaking of doubles, Benneteau and Roger-Vasselin have just defeated

:01:39. > :01:44.the Canadian pair of Nestor Abad -- and Raonic. Raonic the runner-up

:01:45. > :01:52.here and at Wimbledon last year Tandy are, he is in the single straw

:01:53. > :01:54.here, too, of course. There you go, it is going to be an excellent

:01:55. > :02:09.afternoon! We shall continue to monitor that

:02:10. > :04:18.gentleman's all over the course of the day. That is right in the sun!

:04:19. > :04:30.Harrison did well there to hang in. He has got a lot of pace coming at

:04:31. > :04:35.him. Not easy, but he did his job and held serve. He needs to somehow

:04:36. > :04:42.find a way to get more of these serves back in play of the Dimitrov

:04:43. > :04:44.serve, but he is doing well, finding the lines on first and second serve,

:04:45. > :05:18.has been awesome so far. That was a missed opportunity, he

:05:19. > :05:19.just sort of cut the legs from under that shot rather than going through

:05:20. > :06:06.it. Impressive in all regards from

:06:07. > :06:11.Grigor Dimitrov, a former champion here and playing like it, tricky

:06:12. > :06:16.first round draw, at least it is supposed to be, but he has won it

:06:17. > :06:21.6-3, I wonder if the American has any answer to this onslaught. This

:06:22. > :06:24.is the first day of many wonderful days of tennis ahead which will

:06:25. > :06:32.culminate in Wimbledon. If you want to get involved, here is how. Get

:06:47. > :06:59.activity finder to help you find something to try near you. Just get

:07:00. > :07:06.up, get inspired and get active. S so, there we are. Wonderful tennis

:07:07. > :07:12.ahead. Take your Wimbledon winner, men and women? The men is easier,

:07:13. > :07:16.you can shuffle it down to five or six, and I will go for Andy Murray.

:07:17. > :07:22.He has got better as the year has gone on, the French championship,

:07:23. > :07:29.getting to the semifinals the way he has, I think for media is slight

:07:30. > :07:35.favourite. The women? It is going to be exciting, because there are 15

:07:36. > :07:41.women at least that can win it. I honestly have no idea who I'd pick.

:07:42. > :07:46.Not a bad thing. Wait to see who is playing well on grass. Johanna

:07:47. > :07:51.Konta, there are so many women could win Wimbledon this year, it is so

:07:52. > :07:54.wide open. She had a tremendous final yesterday in Nottingham,

:07:55. > :07:58.perhaps should have won it against Donna Vekic, but ended up losing in

:07:59. > :08:03.keeping to a third set, excellent final, Upton seven in the world. I

:08:04. > :08:07.don't think she has got the past the second round of Wimbledon. I don't

:08:08. > :08:12.think she has. She is certainly capable of some interest there. Mrs

:08:13. > :08:19.Harris in the middle, Frazer Wright, representing Ryan for IMG. Everybody

:08:20. > :08:21.getting settled into houses in Wimbledon and around south-west

:08:22. > :08:24.London, which is another reason why people love to play here, because

:08:25. > :08:32.they can settle the whole team into these rented houses nearby both

:08:33. > :08:38.these tournaments. Local residents fetch some pretty high rents.

:08:39. > :08:47.Just deal with that pace. It is almost like he's waiting for the

:08:48. > :08:51.ball, when the ball comes at you at that speed, the racket has got to be

:08:52. > :08:58.back so early and you have to stay so low on the ball. Now, this is a

:08:59. > :09:01.dangerous moment, isn't it? Because the ball is coming out of the centre

:09:02. > :09:07.of Grigor Dimitrov's racket right from the word go, and Harrison has

:09:08. > :09:11.not had a chance to settle. And you can see now he is trying to force

:09:12. > :09:14.the action on that forehand, and got way off balance on the forehand

:09:15. > :10:08.side. He needs to play some good points here.

:10:09. > :10:19.Chances armour bit, Dimitrov, didn't he, coming in on that. I like that

:10:20. > :10:24.message here sending back, that he is going to come in a lot if he gets

:10:25. > :10:31.the chance. In these rallies, he is just looking.

:10:32. > :10:40.You can't miss those. He is trying to throw one right over the top, he

:10:41. > :10:47.has got an excellent arm. Good catch! I'm not too sure he had much

:10:48. > :10:53.left in that arm, he didn't even get halfway up there. He has a wonderful

:10:54. > :11:03.arm, the forehand let him down, he went ahead and pick the racket up.

:11:04. > :11:08.All the Americans, they play baseball when they are growing up,

:11:09. > :11:12.they have a great throwing arm. If you want to learn how to develop the

:11:13. > :11:41.technique on the serve, go and throw. Yes.

:11:42. > :11:49.He can do no wrong, the sky. That looked like Ryan Harrison's point

:11:50. > :11:53.the whole way. Played it perfectly, we thought this was an excellent

:11:54. > :11:59.shot, that is good racket head control to get that one back. You

:12:00. > :12:24.can see where they used to call him baby fed.

:12:25. > :12:29.Trouble is on grass when it is not five sets as well, and you are

:12:30. > :12:32.playing somebody hitting winners all over the place, it can go so quick.

:12:33. > :15:09.You just don't have time to settle. The British summer of tennis well

:15:10. > :15:19.under way, tournaments of already taken place in a lung but -- a

:15:20. > :15:30.number of locations. Ilkley for the men's challenger. Both players

:15:31. > :15:35.having a look at the serve on the line, but no challenge from either.

:15:36. > :15:40.Ilkley is an excellent men's tournament, and Edgbaston Priory

:15:41. > :15:51.could always use your support as well. Excellent draw there, led by

:15:52. > :15:58.Dominika Cibulkova who plays Lucie Safarova in the first round. Petra

:15:59. > :16:08.Kvitova has accept today wildcard there, and we wish her Welwyn

:16:09. > :16:31.Hatfield back. -- we wish her well in her comeback. Petra Kvitova

:16:32. > :16:37.suffering a knife wound to her hands defending herself and her property

:16:38. > :16:51.at home in the Czech Republic. So many things that have been hard

:16:52. > :16:56.to bear recently, a minute's silence for those affected by the Finsbury

:16:57. > :16:57.Park attack in the early hours of this morning, and nearby the

:16:58. > :17:09.Grenfell Tower disaster last week. UMPIRE: Mr Harrison is challenging

:17:10. > :17:20.the call on the right baseline, the ball was called out.

:17:21. > :17:45.UMPIRE: The call stands. Mr Harrison has two challenges remaining.

:17:46. > :17:55.Still in the match. Tremendous schedule on day one, this is the

:17:56. > :18:00.second of four matches that we are going to enjoy from Queen's Club.

:18:01. > :18:04.SUE BARKER: Everyone enjoying the warm weather here, lovely match on

:18:05. > :18:08.Centre Court and so much to look forward to later on in the day,

:18:09. > :18:12.including this man. You never know what to expect when Nick Kyrgios

:18:13. > :18:18.gets on the court. What a year he has had, watching him play in Miami,

:18:19. > :18:20.that magical semifinal against Roger Federer, three tie-break sets it

:18:21. > :18:26.was, Andy rally was playing some super tennis. Such a great talent,

:18:27. > :18:30.so much promise, so much potential. Willie Rennie lies it over the next

:18:31. > :18:36.year so? He is certainly a Grand Slam champion in the making. He is

:18:37. > :18:42.playing Donald Young, one of the very talented Americans. Nick

:18:43. > :18:46.Kyrgios against Donald Young, that won't be far away. That is the third

:18:47. > :18:57.match of the day here at the Aegon Championships. Sue, thank you very

:18:58. > :19:05.much. I expect the bar will get a little bit of a hammering later on

:19:06. > :19:08.from the members. It is already quite full, but the weather is set

:19:09. > :19:10.fair all week, it just takes the pressure of the organisers and

:19:11. > :19:12.everybody, in fact. It is beautiful when it is like this, perhaps a bit

:19:13. > :19:18.too hot for the spectators, for the players, is this fine? Not too many

:19:19. > :19:22.players would like this at Wimbledon with the best of five, but herewith

:19:23. > :19:31.best of three it is OK. 31 Celsius at the moment. No problem for these

:19:32. > :19:32.players? It is not too bad compare to other places in the world.

:19:33. > :19:55.Exactly. 31 Celsius, double it, 62, take away

:19:56. > :20:02.the amount of ten Zenit, that is sick six, and then add... What is

:20:03. > :20:17.that? 88 degrees! Harrison at the moment, he is not

:20:18. > :20:30.reading this serve at all. It is not easy, that's for sure, but...

:20:31. > :20:41.Oh dear. That didn't take too much energy at a Ryan Harrison, he was

:20:42. > :20:45.just walking side to side there for four points. Just playing space

:20:46. > :20:53.invaders along the back line. Was that four aces in a row? Didn't

:20:54. > :22:16.Roddick do that once against Agassi on this very court?

:22:17. > :22:27.He had the "Bear. He had time to move onto it and hit it, didn't he,

:22:28. > :22:36.and then it checked of it, didn't it? He just slightly overran it in

:22:37. > :22:52.the end. Once again, it is a mistake. It is

:22:53. > :22:58.straightforward stuff from Dimitrov, he is just sending it back to the

:22:59. > :23:02.Harrison backhand when he can. Harrison's ground strokes have been

:23:03. > :23:08.too many short mid-court balls which Dimitrov has just got on top of, and

:23:09. > :23:11.there, he overhit it, I don't think he has been able to get a rhythm,

:23:12. > :23:23.that is the story of the match so far.

:23:24. > :23:34.And that is the end, probably of the racket. And tell you what, you can

:23:35. > :23:38.pop a metatarsal out very quickly, don't worry about the frame. If you

:23:39. > :23:44.are going to swipe your foot with that, make sure the aim is right,

:23:45. > :23:47.you could cause some serious damage. So, Dimitrov cruising here, and to

:23:48. > :23:55.you know what he does? He does what Roger Federer does.

:23:56. > :23:59.UMPIRE: Warning, Mr Harrison. It makes it difficult for his

:24:00. > :24:01.opponent when he chips it back off the edge. Against Ryan Harrison I

:24:02. > :24:06.guess it is straightforward, this is the illustration from Hawk-Eye. Just

:24:07. > :24:11.on returning the first and second serve, he is just aiming for the

:24:12. > :24:15.backhand side. He is staying off the forehand which is the strength, his

:24:16. > :24:18.return has been excellent. But for me, it has all come down to the

:24:19. > :24:23.serve of Dimitrov but the depth of ground strokes. Ryan Harrison has

:24:24. > :24:29.been hitting too short, he has never been able to put Dimitrov at all on

:24:30. > :24:34.the defensive side, it has been all one-way traffic so far. Harrison

:24:35. > :24:40.just cannot get into, he wants to battle it out and get into a few

:24:41. > :24:53.rallies, but he is not getting any time. Richard Haig felt the need to

:24:54. > :24:59.give Ryan Harrison a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct a minute

:25:00. > :25:05.ago. That is a bit soft for me. It may be the rules. It is a stupid

:25:06. > :25:10.rule. He is only doing himself harm, his foot. If he wants to do that,

:25:11. > :25:16.what problem is it? Does it affect the spectators? Richard is a great

:25:17. > :25:17.guy, but if you are not going to call it in a Wimbledon semifinal,

:25:18. > :25:28.then don't call it here. Ryan Harrison probably saying

:25:29. > :25:34.Dimitrov ought to be called for unsportsmanlike conduct from playing

:25:35. > :25:36.so well in the first round! He is bringing his A-game straight to the

:25:37. > :25:48.court on day one. I think what you just said, his

:25:49. > :25:53.grass court game, I think that having that extra week now, I think

:25:54. > :25:57.you will see, and as soon as I have said that, he will lose today, but

:25:58. > :25:59.generally thinking there will be less upsets in the early round of

:26:00. > :26:16.grass court tournament like Queen's. I just love that move. He doesn't do

:26:17. > :26:23.it as much as he used to, Dimitrov. You do lose a bit of flexibility.

:26:24. > :27:12.But look at this here. Straight to the physio! A few bones cracking.

:27:13. > :27:26.That is so good. Brilliant, isn't it? Wonderful to watch. Full is

:27:27. > :27:31.trekked drop volley. Rounded off with a little controlling slide. You

:27:32. > :27:34.don't want to be hitting volleys from that deep in the court, but

:27:35. > :27:36.when you have control like that, you can get away with it. Beautifully

:27:37. > :27:56.done. And his finish with Dimitrov, that

:27:57. > :27:58.drop volley, very much like a golfer who knows that he has hit the

:27:59. > :28:07.perfect shot, he just holds the pose! He has got a sense of

:28:08. > :28:13.flamboyance about him, you can't take your eyes off him when he is

:28:14. > :28:21.playing well, it is a stunning thing, and he's playing well today.

:28:22. > :29:21.This was a dangerous draw. On paper it was.

:29:22. > :29:30.That is unbelievable defence, one of the tough things to do moving to a

:29:31. > :29:37.new surface is get your feet sorted out and your movement. Dimitrov is

:29:38. > :29:39.seeing the ball like a balloon but even when he had to make ground to

:29:40. > :30:06.it he is lightning. His head has dropped a little bit,

:30:07. > :30:13.Ryan Harrison, and you can see why. Even his best tennis has been thrown

:30:14. > :30:26.back at him. A quick match, 6-3 and 5-1 in less than an hour.

:30:27. > :31:07.It is an absolute drubbing for Ryan Harrison at the hands of the former

:31:08. > :31:10.champion, Grigor Dimitrov, who is through in straight sets in less

:31:11. > :31:15.than an hour and his game is in perfect working order.

:31:16. > :31:33.The crowd really will feel they have only just settled in. And yet they

:31:34. > :31:39.have witnessed Grigor Dimitrov... That is not far off his A-game also

:31:40. > :31:45.be is the number six seed for this tournament. We remember fondly 2014

:31:46. > :31:51.on this very court after beating Wawrinka in the semifinals and Lopez

:31:52. > :31:57.in those three tie-breaks to win the title. This year, such a great start

:31:58. > :32:01.to the year for Dimitrov, only losing one of his first 17 matches,

:32:02. > :32:05.making that Australian Open semifinal before losing to Nadal in

:32:06. > :32:09.five sets which was almost five hours of brilliance. You know he is

:32:10. > :32:14.capable of going the distance here and perhaps even at Wimbledon. It is

:32:15. > :32:20.early days but in terms of form horse as he looks to have it. A long

:32:21. > :32:23.way to go. There will be better days for Ryan Harrison who had had a

:32:24. > :32:28.spectacular year in self and we enjoyed watching him play when he

:32:29. > :32:33.was allowed to against the Bulgarian. Nick Kyrgios is underway

:32:34. > :32:36.against a former world junior champion, Donald Young and to close

:32:37. > :32:44.out the day, Kyle Edmund against the Wimbledon junior champion of last

:32:45. > :32:49.year, Denis Shapovalov of Canada. A fine schedule but the first two

:32:50. > :32:54.matches have gone past in quite a hurry, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga already a

:32:55. > :32:58.winner today and he will probably play Gilles Muller in the second

:32:59. > :33:05.round. Dimitrov will play the winner of James Ward and the qualifier,

:33:06. > :33:11.Julien Benneteau. Grigor Dimitrov through to the second round and

:33:12. > :33:15.really looking team and up for a long week here. Let's hope so, he is

:33:16. > :33:21.talking with Andrew Cotter. As comfortable as one can be in that

:33:22. > :33:26.heat, how did you enjoy it? Yes, just pleased to see everybody out

:33:27. > :33:31.here on a beautiful Monday. It is always very special for me to come

:33:32. > :33:34.out and play in front of you guys. The crowd has been tremendous

:33:35. > :33:39.through all the years and am always excited to step on the court. I'm

:33:40. > :33:43.very happy to finish the match in that style. Since you won here in 21

:33:44. > :33:48.team you have had some downs but have come back to form this season

:33:49. > :33:51.with victories in Brisbane and Sophia soapie lingered coming into

:33:52. > :34:00.the grass court season? I'm always positive. -- so you must feel

:34:01. > :34:04.positive coming in. I am just trying to give 100% every day on the

:34:05. > :34:08.practice court and also in the matches because you never know how

:34:09. > :34:13.many you will play on grass. Every moment counts, every practice and

:34:14. > :34:18.every match. I am very happy with the performance so far. It looks a

:34:19. > :34:23.bit different since you won here, how do you enjoy the new look Centre

:34:24. > :34:28.Court? A lot of familiar faces but now even more, especially when the

:34:29. > :34:33.stadium looks spectacular. The first time I walked on the ground a few

:34:34. > :34:37.days ago I was very surprised, pleasantly of course. And I'm

:34:38. > :34:42.looking forward to play a few more matches here. And the Bulgarian

:34:43. > :34:49.flags, good start and enjoy the rest of the tournament. Thank you.

:34:50. > :34:56.Looking very comfortable on the grass, so much expected of them at

:34:57. > :35:01.-- Grigor Dimitrov as is the next person on court, Nick Kyrgios who

:35:02. > :35:07.will be facing Donald Young. He makes the game look so easy, Grigor

:35:08. > :35:12.Dimitrov. He sort of glides through the court and he has that amazing

:35:13. > :35:15.power when he gets in position. Ryan Harrison could never get him in a

:35:16. > :35:19.defensive position, he was always being pushed back. If he hit

:35:20. > :35:25.anything short Dimitrov pounced on it and I liked how he was sneaking

:35:26. > :35:28.into the net in rallies and his serve was awesome. You look back at

:35:29. > :35:33.the Australian Open and you think, he is getting there, maybe this is

:35:34. > :35:38.his year because when he plays like that, you think, how do players stay

:35:39. > :35:42.with him? Ryan Harrison tried hard but you got to get your racket on

:35:43. > :35:47.the ball! That did not really happy so much in the fourth game of the

:35:48. > :35:53.second set. He was struggling. He didn't know what to do. This was

:35:54. > :35:59.awesome and he could not read it. You see somebody like Andy Murray

:36:00. > :36:04.who somehow find a way to at least get his racket on it and you realise

:36:05. > :36:10.how good these returners are. But Harrison could not get on the ball,

:36:11. > :36:16.he was just rushed. Superb. It shows what a weapon the serve is on this

:36:17. > :36:24.surface. And Grigor loves it. He gets mad Bull to slide out wide --

:36:25. > :36:29.he gets that ball to slide. He has so many options and it is difficult

:36:30. > :36:33.to pick where he is going to serve with the ball toss exactly the same

:36:34. > :36:37.every time. He has a good rhythm already at the start of the

:36:38. > :36:40.tournament and he will be a major threat here and at Wimbledon if he

:36:41. > :36:46.continues. Looking so comfortable and we talked about his movement on

:36:47. > :36:51.the grass court and how it is different from other surfaces but he

:36:52. > :36:55.has got it, so fast off the clay. The stay is so low to the ground and

:36:56. > :37:03.when he is stretching out wide and he looks in Alan Spavin time,

:37:04. > :37:10.gliding on the court. -- he looks in balance. He get it back in and the

:37:11. > :37:16.big forehand and his feet, small steps the whole time. And now he

:37:17. > :37:23.charges and that is what I loved when he comes into the net like

:37:24. > :37:27.that. That is natural grass court instinct to do that. A lot of

:37:28. > :37:32.players would have waited but he came in. This is what you want when

:37:33. > :37:38.you come to Queen's, the talent he has, it is all down to finding that

:37:39. > :37:42.winning formula that can take him to be a Grand Slam champion. He has

:37:43. > :37:46.everything in his game and it is just why it has not happened before

:37:47. > :37:50.and sometimes it just takes some players longer than others. I still

:37:51. > :37:55.think he will win a Grand Slam, he is too good not to. Maybe this is

:37:56. > :37:59.his year. So stylish and it would be great for the game if he won one all

:38:00. > :38:03.stop he is so charismatic on the court and a great guy and it would

:38:04. > :38:08.do a lot for the sport. Peter Fleming has joined us. You would

:38:09. > :38:15.have to wonder why it has not happened, certainly on grass. He is

:38:16. > :38:22.a gem. He does everything well and he moves so gracefully. You think,

:38:23. > :38:25.OK, if it beliefs, does he not believe it himself in the big

:38:26. > :38:34.moments? Is his game not quite big enough? He seems powerful enough. He

:38:35. > :38:40.has those runs, one at Wimbledon when he got right the way through

:38:41. > :38:45.and at the Australian Open this year to the semifinal but he doesn't seem

:38:46. > :38:51.to be able to sustain it. I guess it is a belief thing. The serial

:38:52. > :38:57.winners just always believe they were going to win. It did not matter

:38:58. > :39:05.almost what the obstacles were also up then you have the next level of

:39:06. > :39:09.guys who can -- whose belief can be shaken once in awhile and I guess

:39:10. > :39:14.Dimitrov is in that category at the moment. He is in the bottom half of

:39:15. > :39:17.the draw and next up on centre is Nick Kyrgios against Donald Young

:39:18. > :39:21.but there is plenty to talk about here at the Aegon Championships and

:39:22. > :39:24.some potential rule changes and everything that is changing in

:39:25. > :39:30.tennis all the time. John Inverdale has been put into the main man of

:39:31. > :39:34.the ATP, Chris Kermode. With Roger win in Australia and Rafa in front

:39:35. > :39:38.it is a funny old world, men's tennis. It is the most exciting time

:39:39. > :39:44.I have ever seen in men's professional tennis in my lifetime.

:39:45. > :39:48.People were talking about the end of Rafa and Roger and there was a

:39:49. > :39:51.gradual decline but who would have thought they would play that epic

:39:52. > :39:56.final at the Australian Open, probably the highest standard of

:39:57. > :40:01.tennis I have seen for a long time. And then Rafa destroying everybody

:40:02. > :40:04.at Roland Garros was extraordinary. Going into Wimbledon it will be the

:40:05. > :40:09.most open Championships probably for the last ten years. And when you

:40:10. > :40:13.consider that wearing Turgott the league final in Paris, Novak and

:40:14. > :40:20.Andy, I think the third of the draw in Paris over 30 -- that Wawrinka

:40:21. > :40:24.got to the final. What message is it sending out of the men's game as a

:40:25. > :40:28.whole question is a question I get asked a lot and nobody seems to have

:40:29. > :40:32.the answer as to why the players are hanging around. The general trend of

:40:33. > :40:39.answers is that the top guys are so professional with their teams,

:40:40. > :40:44.dieticians and trainers and physios, that they can play longer. They are

:40:45. > :40:49.playing smarter, choosing tournaments well and which surfaces

:40:50. > :40:52.to play on carefully. But we have the next generation coming up who

:40:53. > :40:58.are knocking on the door and we will see when they can knock off the old

:40:59. > :41:04.guard. You mention the next generation and one of the most

:41:05. > :41:11.interesting developments is the NextGen series, sets to four,

:41:12. > :41:15.fundamental changes to the rules of the game. Are you concerned about

:41:16. > :41:19.elements of the sport on the wider scale in terms of television

:41:20. > :41:23.interest and public interest? Interestingly, I thought about this

:41:24. > :41:28.about two years ago, we were doing research on general trends of sport

:41:29. > :41:33.and you look at the ageing demographic of all sport attendees

:41:34. > :41:37.come on site and on TV, and we are in the best place we have ever been

:41:38. > :41:42.in men's professional tennis. All the numbers and attendant and

:41:43. > :41:46.eyeballs watching the sport, commercial revenues, they are the

:41:47. > :41:51.best they have been and we have an obligation to look out what the game

:41:52. > :41:55.is in such good health to go, what are the pitfalls and roadblocks in

:41:56. > :41:59.ten years' time? Then we can start experimenting and this is just a way

:42:00. > :42:05.of having a look at these rule changes. Will any of them happen in

:42:06. > :42:09.my lifetime in the job? Or even watching the sport? I don't know,

:42:10. > :42:15.but we certainly won't be rushing into anything. But tennis needs to

:42:16. > :42:19.look ahead, we need to look at the next generation of fans. We talk

:42:20. > :42:25.about the next generation of players but the next generation of fans from

:42:26. > :42:29.all sport has to look at it. My kids are in their 20s, how they consume

:42:30. > :42:34.any entertainment product including sports, watching it on different

:42:35. > :42:38.platforms. We have to be ahead of the game and that is what we are

:42:39. > :42:42.doing with this event. In the round, a great five said Grand Slam match

:42:43. > :42:45.is one of the greatest sporting events, the way it swings, but if

:42:46. > :42:50.that also one of the great weaknesses of tennis? When people

:42:51. > :42:55.could meet the greatest matches of all time they will always be one of

:42:56. > :43:00.those six-hour epic five set castles. When they are like that,

:43:01. > :43:05.glad at Oriol and dynamic, it is phenomenal, but that is maybe one in

:43:06. > :43:09.the year -- gladiatorial. There is a lot of content to go through that is

:43:10. > :43:13.not that. And maybe they can be a way that both forms can be addressed

:43:14. > :43:19.with a short form, a middle form and may be a long form. It sounds quite

:43:20. > :43:23.complicated! But you do have to think about the fans and kids

:43:24. > :43:27.wanting everything so quickly, they don't want to sit for hours

:43:28. > :43:37.watching. I think it is an issue. We have also come to a era where the

:43:38. > :43:41.bat is so physical, especially on clay courts or slow hard courts,

:43:42. > :43:47.that the guys had to take 30 seconds in between points, it seems. The

:43:48. > :43:54.warnings they get for time violations... They are just

:43:55. > :43:58.nonsensical. They get one warning a match but the average time between

:43:59. > :44:05.points is a 32 seconds so how is that when the rule says 25? Either

:44:06. > :44:11.idea to the rule or make it redundant -- stick to the rule. I

:44:12. > :44:15.think that if we could speed the game up it would help. You do need a

:44:16. > :44:22.clock to actually put that into place. Interesting at the first to

:44:23. > :44:27.four with the tie-break at 3-3? That might be a bit radical but as Chris

:44:28. > :44:33.said, they are looking at things. I applaud him for looking ahead. Don't

:44:34. > :44:38.wait. It is like the Davis Cup, we have been talking about the rules

:44:39. > :44:41.for 20 years and the ITF frankly did not pay attention until they almost

:44:42. > :44:45.had no choice because the players were not playing. This is great

:44:46. > :44:50.stuff to hear, that they are looking at it and he is right, attention

:44:51. > :44:55.span is shorter. Will the grandstands be the best of three set

:44:56. > :44:59.in the end? Maybe. Why is that a big problem? There are great 3-set

:45:00. > :45:04.matches as well. There are amazing five set matches as well but they

:45:05. > :45:11.can also be boring. I think a lot of the ideas he talked about were very

:45:12. > :45:16.good, positive thinking about the future and not waiting for things. I

:45:17. > :45:22.think that are some potentially great rule changes and I applaud it.

:45:23. > :45:28.I don't understand why the first to four grates on people. If you think

:45:29. > :45:32.about it, sometimes the dog days of a set are just waiting for them to

:45:33. > :45:38.get to 3-3 and then the good stuff happens. If you played first to four

:45:39. > :45:45.then the good stuff is from the start. That might make matches more

:45:46. > :45:50.consistently exciting. It will take away what we have been talking about

:45:51. > :45:53.with Marie, Djokovic, Federer and Nadal about the physicality because

:45:54. > :46:01.it will not be an issue so much -- Murray. Yes and no, if you have

:46:02. > :46:08.those four going at it with the power they have fought three sets it

:46:09. > :46:12.can still be a great match. With first of four, that might go away so

:46:13. > :46:16.that might be a bit too radical but if that is what it takes then that

:46:17. > :46:20.is what it takes but I think the shortening of matches at some stage

:46:21. > :46:25.will happen. No let, that has been talked about for a long time. Why

:46:26. > :46:30.should it not happen on serve if it happens in a rally? Anyway, that is

:46:31. > :46:35.a big talking point and if you want to get involved, please get into on

:46:36. > :46:39.social media. We are here at the Queen's Club on the opening day of

:46:40. > :46:43.the Aegon Championships and this young man, 22 years of age, Nick

:46:44. > :46:46.Kyrgios is on court at the moment, another with such potential and a

:46:47. > :46:51.bright future and a possible Grand Slam winner and I'm sure he would

:46:52. > :46:54.embrace the changes and he certainly embraces this service, he loves

:46:55. > :46:59.playing on grass. He has been talking to Kathryn Whittaker.

:47:00. > :47:04.Looking at the grass at Queen's Club can it get me excited and a lot of

:47:05. > :47:08.people, coming off the clay, it makes everybody refreshed and ready

:47:09. > :47:12.to go also I guess might serve set up everything on the cross but I

:47:13. > :47:16.have played a long time on grass. On Australia we have a couple of grass

:47:17. > :47:20.court tournament when we were young. I learned what to do on the grass

:47:21. > :47:25.and we tried a lot on it. I feel comfortable and have had some good

:47:26. > :47:28.success. I have tried to make the whole year important, have more

:47:29. > :47:32.consistency at each tournament but the grass is a bit more of a focus.

:47:33. > :47:38.Wimbledon is my favourite Grand Slam so I would like to do well there. I

:47:39. > :47:42.feel healthy. During the clay court season I had some injuries but I

:47:43. > :47:46.have been doing a lot of rehab and I feel good. And in terms of renting a

:47:47. > :47:50.slightly easier first-round draw that in the past with Donald Young

:47:51. > :47:56.who you have beaten twice. Happy with that? Yes but he is a tricky

:47:57. > :48:01.player and a lefty and he can play some sneaky tennis on grass so I

:48:02. > :48:05.will not taken lightly. He does not have the best record here at Queen's

:48:06. > :48:10.Club but this is a match that you would expect him to come through

:48:11. > :48:15.comfortably. You would think so. You mentioned earlier about his match

:48:16. > :48:19.against Federer, I watched that and to meet the discipline he had and

:48:20. > :48:23.that, even though he lost it, the standard of tennis was ridiculous.

:48:24. > :48:27.That is these other potential have and if the can sustain it during

:48:28. > :48:32.Queen's and at Wimbledon, he is another like Dimitrov who is a

:48:33. > :48:35.potential Grand Slam winner if he can sustain the brilliant he showed

:48:36. > :48:39.in that type of match and keep his game for another hour or so. He

:48:40. > :48:46.could be awesome. He talked about his injury, hip and shoulder and now

:48:47. > :48:50.he has got his knee bandaged so that is a bit of worry. He has been

:48:51. > :48:54.talking to a sports psychologist and doing some work with Sebastien Gros

:48:55. > :49:01.on, making the right moves. -- Sebastien Grosjean. It is good to

:49:02. > :49:08.see Casillas so much talent and has there been so dynamic server? -- it

:49:09. > :49:15.is good to see because he had so much talent. When he is on, his

:49:16. > :49:20.serve might be the most dominant shot in the game. And his opponent

:49:21. > :49:25.today, Donald Young, does not come in on much, a five match losing

:49:26. > :49:30.streak. He has only won ten matches on grass in his career. He came onto

:49:31. > :49:34.the circuit and everybody predicted great things for him but it did not

:49:35. > :49:38.happen. He was an American big hope a few years back and got these

:49:39. > :49:42.endorsements at a young age that never made the breakthrough that

:49:43. > :49:47.everybody expected. He has not played well in singles for a while.

:49:48. > :49:51.Getting to the final of the French Open doubles, that will do him some

:49:52. > :49:55.good with his confidence but this is tough on this surface against

:49:56. > :50:00.Kyrgios. Donald Young can play sneaky tennis as Kyrgios said that

:50:01. > :50:04.you would have to favourite Kyrgios. There was so much hype about Donald

:50:05. > :50:08.Young, difficult to deal with when you are young and we put a lot of

:50:09. > :50:12.pressure on the young players. He was 15 years old and head and

:50:13. > :50:19.shoulders above everybody else skill wise but he did not grow much and

:50:20. > :50:23.tennis is a big man's game. Does he have enough power to trouble

:50:24. > :50:27.Kyrgios? I'm not sure. We will see. Peter is on his way to join Andrew

:50:28. > :50:35.Cotter. All yours, Andrew. COMMENTATOR: Certain players in

:50:36. > :50:38.tennis and all sport to generate excitement and Kyrgios is one of

:50:39. > :50:56.those but what can Donald Young do today, serving to get as going?

:50:57. > :51:06.APPLAUSE We talk about the pulling power and

:51:07. > :51:10.Federer and Nadal and Djokovic and Andy Murray do it through their

:51:11. > :51:13.sheer brilliance and draw the crowds but Kyrgios has that exciting

:51:14. > :51:18.combination, you don't know what he's going to do with his racket and

:51:19. > :52:42.his temperament. But brilliant to watch.

:52:43. > :53:02.Early pressure on the Donald Young serve.

:53:03. > :54:20.And beautifully worked out, inside out.

:54:21. > :54:29.James Keothavong stepping in from the chair. Unlucky for Kyrgios

:54:30. > :54:31.because of course he was in the rally and had hit quite an effective

:54:32. > :54:49.backhand. Start again. You feel that if Young is to have

:54:50. > :54:53.much of a chance in this match he needs to convert points like that

:54:54. > :55:38.one, serve and volley point that allow him to take the offensive.

:55:39. > :55:57.It was rather wasted by Kyrgios. He had Donald Young court in a few

:55:58. > :56:08.mines there. -- caught in a few minds.

:56:09. > :56:19.APPLAUSE A very protracted opening games come

:56:20. > :56:24.to an end in favour of Donald Young. And he will be the happiest guy in

:56:25. > :56:33.this place right now because that was a shaky opening game. But having

:56:34. > :56:40.won it, I think Young will settle in just a little more. There is a lot

:56:41. > :56:53.of support on the knee of Nick Kyrgios.

:56:54. > :57:05.He is taking the scenic route to his end of the court, Donald Young.

:57:06. > :57:13.Highlighted the serve of Kyrgios before this match. When it is going,

:57:14. > :57:24.really flowing, it is as good as it gets.

:57:25. > :57:27.And it's not just the first serve, his second delivery may be the best

:57:28. > :58:19.in the game. What an opening service came from

:58:20. > :58:23.Nick Kyrgios. It will be difficult for Donald Young to find his way

:58:24. > :58:33.past that. We mentioned Sebastien Grosjean, in the box of Kyrgios.

:58:34. > :58:42.There he is, in the white cap. I thought it was, maybe it's not.

:58:43. > :58:46.Hidden beneath the cap. I'm sure it is.

:58:47. > :59:03.Donald Young's parents are here, his coaches.

:59:04. > :59:22.Yes, that is Grosjean, semifinalist at Wimbledon.

:59:23. > :59:40.Did Young leave this one, or was it too good? I think he could have

:59:41. > :00:25.reached it. There were a lot of very good grass

:00:26. > :00:31.court players back in my day, that played just as Donald Young does

:00:32. > :00:35.now. Had sort of a snaking left-handed serve, that took you out

:00:36. > :00:42.of the court, moved around the court really well. Donald Young, really

:00:43. > :00:47.quick over the court surface. But they serve and volley every ball.

:00:48. > :00:58.And they were really good at it. Donald might be better than a lot of

:00:59. > :01:01.pros today at covering the net and playing volley shots, but perhaps he

:01:02. > :01:06.doesn't do it enough. Let's face it, this is the only surface where a guy

:01:07. > :01:09.can even think about serving and volleying every ball. Otherwise it

:01:10. > :01:17.is lambs to the slaughter, really. The players today return served so

:01:18. > :01:26.well, the court surfaces are much slower, and grass courts must be

:01:27. > :01:31.much truer. He is ambitiously listed as six feet, I think he is a shade

:01:32. > :01:37.below that. He is getting the most out of his physical shortcomings,

:01:38. > :01:41.perhaps. Kyrgios possesses a bit more snap and power. It is a

:01:42. > :01:45.different game. Let's face it, look at some other great players of all

:01:46. > :01:49.time, roared labour, five foot nine. Bjorn Borg, five foot nine.

:01:50. > :02:19.Now if you're not 6-foot two, you are up against it.

:02:20. > :02:32.What a return. He stuck out his racket in hope and it fizzed back.

:02:33. > :03:22.That serve went down at 138, and came back not much slower.

:03:23. > :03:42.A little puff of white. 121 mph wide.

:03:43. > :03:50.After that first game, moving through at a pretty brisk pace. Says

:03:51. > :03:55.he is paying free in his left hip for the first time in months now. He

:03:56. > :03:59.has had injections and he has been troubled by that for a while. And

:04:00. > :04:01.his right shoulder. But he seems to be free of injury and full of

:04:02. > :04:16.confidence. It can be so demoralising when your

:04:17. > :06:00.body hurts. Another hold serve for Donald Young,

:06:01. > :06:04.keeping his nose in front in this first set.

:06:05. > :06:13.Some interesting interviews that Nick Kyrgios has given recently,

:06:14. > :06:17.where he admitted, and I think people knew anyway, that he has

:06:18. > :06:22.probably tanked at eight tournaments in his professional career. He has

:06:23. > :06:26.kind of thrown in the towel a little bit. But he also said that some days

:06:27. > :06:29.he would rather be doing anything else other than playing tennis. A

:06:30. > :06:32.lot of it comes down to being homesick. One of the reasons he

:06:33. > :06:35.loves this time of the year is not just because he's playing on grass,

:06:36. > :06:44.but because when he is in London or the UK, he feels at home. It feels

:06:45. > :06:50.not unlike Australia and he feels pretty comfortable. That is a big

:06:51. > :06:56.factor, if you feel homesick on tour, it will be difficult from the

:06:57. > :07:04.start. No question. And travelling is not easy. It seems glamorous, but

:07:05. > :07:10.often it's not. So often, it can be just about being comfortable in your

:07:11. > :07:17.surroundings, being happy, being contented. That is when players are

:07:18. > :07:23.able to work hard for extended periods consistently. If your

:07:24. > :07:27.personality is a bit up and down, you get emotional and sometimes

:07:28. > :07:35.things get you down, that can be a real challenge. For a professional,

:07:36. > :07:48.tried to play at the level that he is.

:07:49. > :07:55.The one thing Kyrgios has going for him is that he has bags of talent. I

:07:56. > :09:10.don't think he actually needs to practice that much.

:09:11. > :10:24.You didn't even flinch for that serve. Just by him in an instant.

:10:25. > :10:31.Again, fairly comfortable, or made to look fairly comfortable by

:10:32. > :10:34.Kyrgios on his serve. And what a brutal second serve that was, almost

:10:35. > :10:42.impossible for Young to put that back into play. A hard slice,

:10:43. > :10:44.skidding into his left hip. Just not enough time for him to get out of

:10:45. > :10:53.the way of the ball. Young, in a different manner,

:10:54. > :11:33.leading with Kyrgios at the moment. That is Donald Young's mother, a

:11:34. > :11:54.tennis professional herself. Coached by both of his parents,

:11:55. > :12:13.Illona Young and Donald Young senior.

:12:14. > :12:28.Again, a pretty robust service came from Donald Young.

:12:29. > :12:34.We have a match on our hands Centre Court, on opening day. If you're

:12:35. > :12:38.joining us this afternoon, you have missed a couple of matches. First,

:12:39. > :12:48.the fifth seed, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, in impressive form against his

:12:49. > :12:52.fellow Frenchman. Didn't play his best tennis today, but he looked

:12:53. > :12:57.very comfortable on the grass, going through 6-2, 6-2. Starting well at

:12:58. > :13:11.Queen's Club. Former champion Grigor Dimitrov made

:13:12. > :13:13.grass court tennis look very easy in his straight sets win against

:13:14. > :13:23.American Ryan Harrison. The former champion winning in 2014, went on to

:13:24. > :13:25.reach the Wimbledon semifinals. So much potential, certainly looking

:13:26. > :13:32.good on the grass and looking like he will go deep into the tournament,

:13:33. > :13:37.in a very comfortable 6-3, 6-1 win. And we are looking ahead to later on

:13:38. > :13:45.today, when Kyle Edmund will be on court. He plays well on the grass.

:13:46. > :13:56.That matches still to come this afternoon. -- the match against

:13:57. > :15:01.Denis Shapovalov is coming later this afternoon.

:15:02. > :15:33.He is reminiscent of Andy Roddick, the way he plays his service games.

:15:34. > :15:51.Boom, boom, your turn. Donald Young gets his second on the

:15:52. > :16:13.board. Ouch. Oh, dear. A man that has had

:16:14. > :16:20.hip problems for the last few months, and has his knee strapped.

:16:21. > :16:25.We know how awkward these can be. Just the change of direction. It's

:16:26. > :16:45.on very new grass. Ouch, that hurts. I bet he is all

:16:46. > :16:50.right, but any time you have a chronic hip problem, as Kyrgios

:16:51. > :16:54.clearly does, that will have forced it to move in a way that it just

:16:55. > :17:05.doesn't like doing. He is in a lot of pain right now. Just clutching at

:17:06. > :17:12.his left hip. I bet he is all right. I hope he is all right, anyway.

:17:13. > :17:24.It's just frightening, when you have been out for months with an injury

:17:25. > :17:26.and you feel sharp pain. You think, is this going to be another few

:17:27. > :17:41.months, or worse? Again, it is the change of

:17:42. > :17:43.direction. The physio comes on and will administer the treatment. This

:17:44. > :17:53.is how it happened. Quite often, as we were talking

:17:54. > :17:59.about earlier, the damage can be in the inside of the thigh. He has had

:18:00. > :18:05.a problem for a while with his left hip. He does also have that stocking

:18:06. > :18:19.on his right knee. I would say that the hip area has very little range

:18:20. > :18:28.of motion. You watch a guy like Dimitrov, Djokovic, they are very

:18:29. > :18:34.flexible. They can take a tumble like that and just spring back up.

:18:35. > :18:41.Ladies and gentlemen, Mr Kyrgios is now receiving medical treatment.

:18:42. > :18:51.It is almost the shock that he will get, because he is so concerned

:18:52. > :18:55.about it. It looks like he has pulled something. Also, thinking

:18:56. > :18:59.I've been struggling with this for months, I've just got it right, this

:19:00. > :19:05.will be a shock to his system. It will have heard a lot. More so for

:19:06. > :19:14.Kyrgios than for someone else who is more flexible. -- it will have hurt

:19:15. > :19:20.a lot. I hope he hasn't injured it. As you say, I think it's just a

:19:21. > :19:31.shock. He might be sore tomorrow, but hopefully he can continue today.

:19:32. > :19:42.Shall I go on to the different ligaments? Or If you like.

:19:43. > :19:53.The hip flexes are the most overused muscles for tennis players.

:19:54. > :19:59.Everything a tennis player does is based on moving forward. Tennis

:20:00. > :20:07.players, habitually, are a bit lax in trying to strengthen the opposing

:20:08. > :20:13.muscles, the hamstrings. The joints become out of balance. That is when

:20:14. > :20:24.chronic things can appear. I think that is the case with Kyrgios. You

:20:25. > :20:27.know, his hip flexers are very strong and tight, and I would

:20:28. > :20:36.venture to say that the opposing muscles are quite weak.

:20:37. > :20:55.The work continues, Donald Young is sitting down at the moment.

:20:56. > :21:02.Of course, Kyrgios will not just be thinking of this tournament, but

:21:03. > :21:07.tournaments to come, when he has just been back playing pain-free,

:21:08. > :21:15.and with Wimbledon coming up in a couple of weeks' time. Absolutely.

:21:16. > :21:20.He will be thinking a lot more about Wimbledon than he is the rest of

:21:21. > :21:49.this. It is the elephant in the room for every guy that plays here.

:21:50. > :21:55.Once he has had this treatment, he will try to carry on. But it will be

:21:56. > :21:58.in the back of his mind, when you're moving around the court.

:21:59. > :22:14.The Centre Court voicing their support for Nick Kyrgios. And guys

:22:15. > :22:16.are so used to powering out of their split step, the first step is very

:22:17. > :22:41.strong. Didn't feel like changing direction,

:22:42. > :22:47.though. Wrong footing him. They don't play many weeks on grass,

:22:48. > :22:52.maybe two or three a year. Guys just automatically think they can power

:22:53. > :23:01.out of that first step, and it gets them into trouble sometimes.

:23:02. > :23:09.Donald Young has to remain unaffected by this. You've got to be

:23:10. > :23:13.fairly ruthless. While feeling a little bit of simply for your

:23:14. > :23:17.opponent, you know it is not really your concern and you have to carry

:23:18. > :23:23.on doing your job. Absolutely. In fact, he has to guard against

:23:24. > :23:28.thinking anything about his opponent. He needs to just keep

:23:29. > :23:35.playing the way he has been playing. The more aggressive you are against

:23:36. > :23:38.an ailing opponent, the more you test their quickness, their

:23:39. > :23:44.explosive movement, if you just patty cake the ball back and put it

:23:45. > :23:50.in and say, well, I'll make him run around, you are not testing.

:23:51. > :23:53.Wants to just test things out a little bit more, taking the time

:23:54. > :24:06.that he is allowed. He cuts an unmistakable figure

:24:07. > :24:13.around the tennis court, Kyrgios, with his rounded shoulders. He hits

:24:14. > :24:51.the ball into submission. Interesting game to watch now.

:24:52. > :25:49.Of course, the service all from the left hip. If he is feeling pain,

:25:50. > :26:23.that will not be so enjoyable. Just hoping to get through a couple

:26:24. > :26:56.of games and see if it eases at all. It might have been the most

:26:57. > :27:01.dangerous point of view from Kyrgios' point of view, and he

:27:02. > :27:02.survived it. He still looks far from comfortable, although he does often

:27:03. > :28:21.wear a grimace. APPLAUSE

:28:22. > :28:52.Sweetly struck. That was a good, deep return, dispatched.

:28:53. > :29:43.And suddenly it is Young whose body language is a little bit downbeat.

:29:44. > :29:53.Nicely put away. And after all his troubles in this first set, Nick

:29:54. > :31:20.Kyrgios is close to a breakthrough. The two hander can often be a very

:31:21. > :31:26.effective shot for Kyrgios. He hits it very flat but today he has erred

:31:27. > :31:35.with it, more often than I'm sure he would have liked. Well done, Donald

:31:36. > :31:44.Young. Digging himself out of trouble there, facing down two break

:31:45. > :31:50.points. He knows that, at the very least, he is going to have a

:31:51. > :31:56.tie-break. Kyrgios is soldiering on but he does appear to have a bit of

:31:57. > :32:05.a woe is me countenance to him right now. So often the way. The physio

:32:06. > :32:13.lurking in the background. And Kyrgios talking to no one but

:32:14. > :32:16.himself. Interesting, saying that he was being asked about the fact that

:32:17. > :32:22.guys like Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev are perhaps the

:32:23. > :32:27.more likely of the younger group to crack the top of the game now.

:32:28. > :32:33.Somebody brave after him -- asked him that question. And he said, when

:32:34. > :32:39.an injury free, I have got the talent, they have been to Grand Slam

:32:40. > :32:44.quarterfinal is. And there is no doubt, there never has been, that

:32:45. > :32:49.once he gets a good run injury free and when he is up for it and feeling

:32:50. > :32:56.good, he is as good as anybody in the game. And one of the challenges

:32:57. > :33:03.he has is to understand that injuries are something that he can

:33:04. > :33:09.effect. With how he lives, how the trains. Sometimes plays think, I

:33:10. > :33:18.have just got terrible luck, I'm always injured. But guy like Dominic

:33:19. > :33:25.Thiem works day and night and is very rarely injured.

:33:26. > :33:34.You talk about him as being talented but having mental talent is all part

:33:35. > :34:27.of the package. Exactly right. You have got to have it all.

:34:28. > :34:42.Love the way Kyrgios flattened out that forehand. Often he hits it with

:34:43. > :34:50.a lot of top-spin but that one really sings through the court. --

:34:51. > :35:52.zinged through the court. APPLAUSE

:35:53. > :36:00.Kyrgios holds and holds on. And no doubt they are chattering

:36:01. > :37:30.back. A second double fault from Kyrgios

:37:31. > :39:04.and a gift for Young. What do you think the odds are if

:39:05. > :39:33.Young wins this tie-breaker that the match is over? A possibility.

:39:34. > :39:37.And the body language, the contrast is fascinating. Kyrgios with so much

:39:38. > :40:36.to do here. And Young edging closer to this

:40:37. > :41:25.first set. He has done what he has had to do,

:41:26. > :41:27.remain consistent and ask the questions of Kyrgios and now three

:41:28. > :41:49.set points for Donald Young. He gave Donald Young the opportunity

:41:50. > :41:55.and he took it and Donald Young claims the first set against a

:41:56. > :42:01.rather beaten already looking Nick Kyrgios. Still some way to go but so

:42:02. > :42:08.much happened in the first set and so much classic Kyrgios. Some great

:42:09. > :42:23.stuff but fragility and there was of course no doubt an injury. I think

:42:24. > :42:28.we are done. Nick Kyrgios at is going to offer his hand to Donald

:42:29. > :42:32.Young. Ladies and gentlemen, unfortunately due to injury Mr

:42:33. > :42:37.Kyrgios can no longer play. A few groans from the crowd but Nick

:42:38. > :42:40.Kyrgios, Peter Fleming called it, the tie-break loss and I think

:42:41. > :42:45.thinking events down the road at Wimbledon in a couple of weeks.

:42:46. > :42:50.Protecting himself and some will say, could he have dug a little bit

:42:51. > :42:54.deeper, but he knows how he feels. You have to say that for him the

:42:55. > :42:59.right decision. He was clearly in a lot of pain and you get out and you

:43:00. > :43:03.hope that things will loosen up over the next four or five games and

:43:04. > :43:08.clearly they did not. He looked to be in a lot of pain throughout that

:43:09. > :43:16.first set. Probably a wise decision for him to let it go. Donald Young

:43:17. > :43:20.will go through to face one of the two Serbians, Victor Troicki or

:43:21. > :43:23.Janko Tipsarevic. I was going to say, not the way he would want to

:43:24. > :43:28.win but players will take a victory however they've done because

:43:29. > :43:32.everybody has been in that position in that time. Kyrgios, and his many

:43:33. > :43:37.supporters, will hope that he is fine and I am sure he will be to

:43:38. > :43:43.play again and get ready for Wimbledon. But a shame he will not

:43:44. > :43:47.be seen further here at the Aegon Championships. Donald Young, a good

:43:48. > :43:52.win for him, however it came. I think he did the right thing,

:43:53. > :43:56.Kyrgios was in trouble and he kept on asking those questions of him

:43:57. > :44:05.which the Australian was unable to answer. Things moving along very

:44:06. > :44:09.briskly on this opening day, two straight set matches and a

:44:10. > :44:14.retirement after the tie-break win in the first set for Donald Young

:44:15. > :44:17.and the reminder if you have joined us, Nick Kyrgios have had a hip

:44:18. > :44:22.problem for some time and had an awkward fall and had treatment. He

:44:23. > :44:27.continued to struggle and lost the tie-break and eventually conceded

:44:28. > :44:31.the match. Kyrgios is outcome of Donald Young is safely through to

:44:32. > :44:38.the next round and we can hear from him. Many congratulations but not

:44:39. > :44:45.the way you would would have wanted to go through. Definitely not. Nick

:44:46. > :44:50.is a good guy and I like him a lot. It is rough to see him go home like

:44:51. > :44:56.that, especially on services like grass and clay, it is not certain

:44:57. > :45:00.footing, but at the end I'm not happy to get through in that way but

:45:01. > :45:06.I'm happy to be true to the second round. You almost got your Grand

:45:07. > :45:10.Slam first victory in Paris in the doubles, agonisingly close, how much

:45:11. > :45:13.has given you an incentive to go into the grass court season? A lot,

:45:14. > :45:17.it was really exciting if you had told me I would be in the final I

:45:18. > :45:22.would have taken it. The final sucked but to get there was a great

:45:23. > :45:25.experience and I took a tonne of confidence going forward to this

:45:26. > :45:29.grass court season. And in terms of how difficult the game is over

:45:30. > :45:35.transferring from clay to grass, how was today for you in the first

:45:36. > :45:39.competitive test? It was good, I'm a lefty so I get a few more free

:45:40. > :45:45.points, and vice versa with the other guys. I have played it a lot,

:45:46. > :45:52.I kind of know how to get used to it. A good start, well done. Thank

:45:53. > :45:56.you. STUDIO: What a shame, so looking forward to that Matt and the

:45:57. > :46:00.first eight games looked to be competitive but what a shame that

:46:01. > :46:05.Nick Kyrgios had to default -- to that match. We hope that he will be

:46:06. > :46:11.back well in time for Wimbledon. Andrew and John with me, one of the

:46:12. > :46:15.great characters and a big blow to the tournament. It is, he pulled out

:46:16. > :46:18.of the Italian Open and a number of other tournaments so I don't quite

:46:19. > :46:25.know what is going on. You can only guess but to be 22 years of age and

:46:26. > :46:29.have an injury is one thing but if it is the generative then it is a

:46:30. > :46:36.big issue. He will have to think about that. -- degenerative. He has

:46:37. > :46:40.so much talent, but to be consistent, you think of the

:46:41. > :46:45.physical work that the likes of Federer and Nadal and Djokovic and

:46:46. > :46:49.Murray and Wawrinka do, Kyrgios, to join them at the top of the game

:46:50. > :46:53.which is what we have thought he could achieve, you have got to put

:46:54. > :46:58.in consistent, hard physical training. Whether he has done that

:46:59. > :47:02.or not over the last few years as Peter alluded to, whether that is

:47:03. > :47:08.the reason this keeps on recurring, you don't know. But at 22 there is

:47:09. > :47:11.still time to recover. But you have got to get stronger otherwise it

:47:12. > :47:15.will keep on happening. So many tournaments but little time to get

:47:16. > :47:21.an injury right and build it up before you are back on court. You

:47:22. > :47:24.see some body like Federer, how he has managed his career so

:47:25. > :47:29.brilliantly, the amount he has played and where he has played and

:47:30. > :47:32.he is still going strong. This is a big loss for Kyrgios and a great

:47:33. > :47:37.pity to into Wimbledon, they have got to get to the bottom of it and

:47:38. > :47:43.find out why it is recurring. I don't know the situation, but you

:47:44. > :47:45.have got to be strong these days to play on the circuit. And with the

:47:46. > :47:49.amount of tournaments and the physicality of the game Comey can't

:47:50. > :47:56.keep breaking down. You say breaking down but it was a horrendous fall.

:47:57. > :48:03.And we see it so often on the first day on the first few days of the

:48:04. > :48:07.grass court season. It is very nerve-racking, especially when they

:48:08. > :48:11.change direction. The forehand from Donald Young could have gone to the

:48:12. > :48:16.forehand, he had to push up and come back the other way. And if it was

:48:17. > :48:20.not bad enough, from this angle am a he is just stealing to his right a

:48:21. > :48:24.bit and we have seen it so many times. Juan Martin Del Potro has had

:48:25. > :48:30.a couple of these and it looks like a giraffe going down. And this is

:48:31. > :48:35.not like grass at the local club, this is hard and you can take a big

:48:36. > :48:39.fall. It is not very long at any moisture makes it extremely

:48:40. > :48:42.slippery. Just the way that it goes but hopefully he will be OK for

:48:43. > :48:47.Wimbledon because nobody wants to see a young man's career curtailed

:48:48. > :48:51.by things like this. It is early days, they have not had a medical

:48:52. > :48:57.diagnosis but he clearly does not feel he has got another hour and a

:48:58. > :49:01.half of tennis. He was at least able to run a little bit in the

:49:02. > :49:05.tie-break. And you could feel in that tie-break that he had to win

:49:06. > :49:12.it, he knew he could not go three sets so no great surprise he decide

:49:13. > :49:18.if to call it a day. Queen's is a big tournament, no doubt, but when

:49:19. > :49:23.you have Wimbledon or any Grand Slam looming, any type of injury, you

:49:24. > :49:28.don't hang in there. I am not saying by any means this was not a bad

:49:29. > :49:34.injury, but if this was Wimbledon, would he have defaulted in the first

:49:35. > :49:39.round? He might have tried to carry on, I don't know. But you can't take

:49:40. > :49:42.any chances. I was going to say, with Wimbledon coming, that has to

:49:43. > :49:45.be your priority even though you might have felt you could have got

:49:46. > :49:49.back into it. It was obvious he could not move, particularly in the

:49:50. > :49:54.tie-break, there were times when he was trying to pick a winner. I have

:49:55. > :49:59.seen him fully fit moving like that as well, this guy is impossible to

:50:00. > :50:04.predict. I know he has hurt himself. But trying to get inside the mind of

:50:05. > :50:09.Nick Kyrgios is very difficult. One moment he is doing that and the next

:50:10. > :50:12.he is hitting five winners. This was the first point after and you could

:50:13. > :50:16.see that his movement was not right. And when that gets in your head and

:50:17. > :50:20.you are feeling pain, it is very difficult. Donald Young did the

:50:21. > :50:25.right thing by making him move. That is what you have to do, side to side

:50:26. > :50:31.and make him move all over the court. Donald Young is one of the

:50:32. > :50:36.most mobile players and has a brilliant record in third sets and

:50:37. > :50:40.tie-breaks. He has learned how to compete. Obviously extremely aware

:50:41. > :50:47.of Kyrgios being in trouble and pulled out wide on the fifth point

:50:48. > :50:51.but John is right that Kyrgios is the rink on the side of caution. But

:50:52. > :50:58.it would not surprise me if he was fit and ready to go at Wimbledon. --

:50:59. > :51:05.you can never guess what is going on with Nick Kyrgios. No doubt this is

:51:06. > :51:09.a genuine injury. Absolutely and the last thing he did, yes come here and

:51:10. > :51:13.prepared and has been here for almost a week and wanted to have a

:51:14. > :51:18.good tournament. He knows this is his service to do well on. He is

:51:19. > :51:23.another like Dimitrov, you want to see him do well because he is such

:51:24. > :51:28.an exciting player. When he is on, he can beat anybody, no doubt. And

:51:29. > :51:33.you look for players like that in their personality. You never know

:51:34. > :51:41.what he's going to do. And they are fun, you need more players like that

:51:42. > :51:44.on the circuit and I hope he keeps on improving. If he gets a bit

:51:45. > :51:48.stronger mentally and physically he can win Grand Slams. There's always

:51:49. > :51:53.something to talk about with him, drama with Nick. The other day

:51:54. > :51:58.before Quincy was interviewed he had said how McEnroe had said in

:51:59. > :52:03.commentary at the French Open, John said that of all the people that

:52:04. > :52:08.would have me back into a coaching situation, it would be Nick Kyrgios

:52:09. > :52:13.and his response was, he's dreaming! That would have been a dream

:52:14. > :52:20.matchup, forget Agassi and Djokovic! Most people would be so complemented

:52:21. > :52:29.if John said that! He says forget it! And he has gone for Sebastien

:52:30. > :52:34.Grosjean who is so polar opposite. Yes, he never says boo to a dos,

:52:35. > :52:40.charming and everything. But he does put in the work, he gets in the

:52:41. > :52:45.academy is four or five of the juniors and he wears them out, one

:52:46. > :52:49.after another. I think he's putting in the hours and he proved it in

:52:50. > :52:53.Miami with that magnificent match against Roger Federer. The pudding

:52:54. > :53:00.in the work but it is the consistency. Some of us still

:53:01. > :53:05.waiting to grow up. We are 53. It takes a long time for some people to

:53:06. > :53:08.get it and it Nick Kyrgios is now getting it and understanding the

:53:09. > :53:12.work he has to-do to be at the top of the game and achieve his

:53:13. > :53:20.potential, that is fantastic. And his results speak for them self. He

:53:21. > :53:26.has seen the likes of Alexander Zverev and sashes are having great

:53:27. > :53:35.success, Dominic Thiem, Shapovalov -- Sasha Zverev. All of these things

:53:36. > :53:39.serve to remind him that you don't have for ever out there and you have

:53:40. > :53:43.to make the most of it so if it is the case that he is training hard,

:53:44. > :53:50.brilliant. Sports psychologist on board, he's heading in the right

:53:51. > :53:57.direction. Ten minute until Denis Shapovalov. Just a word on Donald

:53:58. > :54:02.Young, we have say that he did all the right things. He is going

:54:03. > :54:08.through and he played a good match. Or a good set. He is somebody who

:54:09. > :54:12.manoeuvres the ball around the court well and when somebody is injured

:54:13. > :54:16.that is perfect because he is not a huge hit but he creates angles and

:54:17. > :54:19.get a lot of balls back and is nasty to play and he did the job.

:54:20. > :54:26.Sometimes you look across the court and with Nick Kyrgios, he can be

:54:27. > :54:32.walking around but then hit three winners. He stuck to his task and

:54:33. > :54:36.got enough balls in and got to the win. He is happy with himself at the

:54:37. > :54:39.moment. Absolutely but it means that the players who were scheduled for

:54:40. > :54:44.the fourth match who thought they might be playing late into the

:54:45. > :54:48.evening, Kyle Edmund and Denis Shapovalov, they will be on court in

:54:49. > :54:52.the next few minutes. But we can bring you up-to-date with results so

:54:53. > :54:55.far on the first day of the Aegon Championships and on Centre Court it

:54:56. > :54:59.was Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who made it look easy against fellow Frenchman

:55:00. > :55:03.Adrian Mannarino who had suffered a back injury. We will see quite a few

:55:04. > :55:08.injuries this route, it is difficult for the players to come onto the

:55:09. > :55:11.grass. It was a back injury that effected Mannarino and song that

:55:12. > :55:19.went through for the loss of just four games. And also making it look

:55:20. > :55:26.easy was Grigor Dimitrov who was facing the American, Ryan Harrison,

:55:27. > :55:31.again losing just four games. Former champion and Wimbledon semifinalist

:55:32. > :55:32.and always one to watch. Talented player and safely through to the

:55:33. > :55:44.second round. That was on Centre Court and on

:55:45. > :55:49.Court Number One, Tomas Berdych was in action against Steve Darcis,

:55:50. > :55:54.broken in both sets and Darcis served for the first but Berdych

:55:55. > :56:02.came through in straight sets, 7-56-3. That is the result so far

:56:03. > :56:10.and we now know that Nick Kyrgios is out. We can have a look at the draw

:56:11. > :56:15.because it has opened things up. As far as Kyrgios going out is

:56:16. > :56:19.concerned, that was in the half that Andy Murray was in and we talked at

:56:20. > :56:24.the top of the programme about how dangerous that was and it is still

:56:25. > :56:29.dangerous with some big servers and tall players in there. Suddenly

:56:30. > :56:34.Kyrgios, most of them would be happy to see him exiting. People will be

:56:35. > :56:36.interesting to see if he turned up in the Wimbledon draw after his

:56:37. > :56:41.injury because you don't want your name anywhere near. We expect him to

:56:42. > :56:46.make a quarter or semi at that level sooner rather than later but

:56:47. > :56:50.strength all the way down. I feel a bit sorry for Aljaz Bedene who to

:56:51. > :56:54.play Andy Murray for the second year in a row. That is tomorrow afternoon

:56:55. > :57:00.with the weather set fair, looking forward to it. But strength all the

:57:01. > :57:04.way down, Tsonga who Murray beat in the 2013 Wimbledon semifinal, he has

:57:05. > :57:09.blown Federer off the court on grass before. And he wants to play Marin

:57:10. > :57:11.Cilic or John Isner bastion that he has formally, Isner more perverse

:57:12. > :57:25.the clay -- spillage I still think that the match between

:57:26. > :57:26.Isner and Cilic might go through to the semifinals in that half. I think

:57:27. > :57:51.you are right and that is the Last year's finalist here and at

:57:52. > :58:00.Wimbledon, Raonic. Left-hander on the grass, Wawrinka coming down

:58:01. > :58:04.after the final. Wawrinka had a great run. I see that as a 50-50

:58:05. > :58:13.match, against Lopez. It is interesting that that they have

:58:14. > :58:21.brought in a coach just for the grass, which was very admirable.

:58:22. > :58:28.Not suggesting that he is going to be charging the net, but different

:58:29. > :58:32.coach for grass. He writes himself off on the grass. He is not one of

:58:33. > :58:37.the players that comes out and says, I'm really going to do well at

:58:38. > :58:41.Wimbledon. Some people just don't like the limelight, and he is one of

:58:42. > :58:46.them. He gets on with his job. It's very odd. You can't hide, when you

:58:47. > :58:51.are as good as that. I'm sorry, but the semifinal against Murray was

:58:52. > :58:54.fantastic. There is often a reaction, even though there is more

:58:55. > :59:02.of a break between the French Open and Queen's Club. Stan cannot afford

:59:03. > :59:06.to start slowly. Of all of these services you play on, grass is the

:59:07. > :59:09.one, ask Ryan Harrison, you can't find your way in. If you are blown

:59:10. > :59:14.off the court, you are blown off the court. You have to start with

:59:15. > :59:21.urgency. Stan cannot start slowly against Lopez. He said he likes to

:59:22. > :59:24.be set for his shots, and grass you don't get the time to do that? Yes,

:59:25. > :59:28.these are some of the drills they are going to be using about that

:59:29. > :59:33.movement, see what his thoughts are about certain things. You are right,

:59:34. > :59:39.it is the movement. Stan does not defend well on grass. He seems to be

:59:40. > :59:42.late, doesn't get the ball back into playing of times. But he's got

:59:43. > :59:46.weapons. These days, the grass courts are so good. In the past,

:59:47. > :59:51.they use to bounce so low. There is no reason why he couldn't play

:59:52. > :59:55.better on grass. One thing must be the return, on the backhand and also

:59:56. > :59:59.on the forehand. If you look at what Federer has done to people, he

:00:00. > :00:03.nullifies the big serve straightaway by knocking it back. Just knock it

:00:04. > :00:06.back. You know nobody is going to serve and volley against you

:00:07. > :00:10.nowadays. Knock it back on and then you are at least 50-50, Stan

:00:11. > :00:16.Wawrinka, from the back of the court, in every rally. I think he

:00:17. > :00:19.will be moving forward and being more aggressive than he has been

:00:20. > :00:24.before. The next match, and they will be racing down to the court,

:00:25. > :00:31.they expected to be later, it is Kyle Edmund against Denis

:00:32. > :00:39.Shapovalov. They matter in -- they met in the deciding rubber, this

:00:40. > :00:42.incident, in a fit of temper, bashing the ball out of the court

:00:43. > :00:48.and into the eye socket of the umpire. It was such a shocking

:00:49. > :00:53.moment for this young man, teenager, first Davis Cup. Such a big moment.

:00:54. > :00:58.To end like that, it was absolutely shocking. It was awful, that was a

:00:59. > :01:03.lesson he will learn. That was terrible. The umpire could have lost

:01:04. > :01:10.his eyesight easily. He didn't get the racket the right way. He smacked

:01:11. > :01:13.it straight at him. If it hadn't hit the umpire, it could have done

:01:14. > :01:22.serious damage to a spectator as well. He had surgery, it fractured

:01:23. > :01:26.the eye socket. But he is OK. It is a sign of how well we are designed,

:01:27. > :01:33.that is what they are therefore, the eye socket. He was hugely

:01:34. > :01:36.embarrassed. In a Davis Cup, you know? He kept in touch with the

:01:37. > :01:43.umpire, they get on really well now. It was a lesson learned. Don't do it

:01:44. > :01:46.again, though! We are laughing about it this morning, he will be OK now.

:01:47. > :01:54.Another talented player that was tipped for the top. Let's see what

:01:55. > :01:58.he had to say. Seriously one practising today? It

:01:59. > :02:03.is great to be in London with such great weather, the past couple of

:02:04. > :02:07.weeks it has been really raining. You have come through qualifying,

:02:08. > :02:11.one really tough match in a tie-break decider. You must be

:02:12. > :02:16.feeling in pretty good nick? Yes, saved much point in the first match,

:02:17. > :02:20.and have a battle with Liam. Happy to have qualified and have a chance

:02:21. > :02:24.to play Kyle Edmund again. I expect a good match and I will go out there

:02:25. > :02:27.and have fun. When you say play him again, everybody talks about the

:02:28. > :02:34.previous meeting. Is that behind you now, is it time to move on? Yes, you

:02:35. > :02:38.know, what happened happened. Like you said, it is behind me. I have

:02:39. > :02:42.learned from it, it is a new match, nothing to do with the last one. I

:02:43. > :02:45.think it will be a fun battle. Best of luck.

:02:46. > :02:52.Very good to do an interview and get a feel for it. We talk about the

:02:53. > :02:56.weather, it is perfect for the players of grass courts, they are

:02:57. > :03:00.used to this weather and play in it all year round. Doesn't reflect the

:03:01. > :03:05.heat, so that is nice. Some of the places they have been at over the

:03:06. > :03:11.years, Malaysia, the middle of the day, with the humidity. I'm more

:03:12. > :03:14.worried about the spectators. Not necessarily those two, but some of

:03:15. > :03:18.them in the East stand, as the sun goes down behind me, the clubhouse

:03:19. > :03:22.are going to get it right in the face. I assumed they knew that when

:03:23. > :03:28.they bought their tickets. A day for umbrellas for the right reasons. A

:03:29. > :03:32.beautiful day for tennis. And in the member area, you have to get in

:03:33. > :03:40.early, because there are no tickets. They get early and they have to make

:03:41. > :03:41.it through to early evening. There is a bar, less than a pitching wedge

:03:42. > :03:51.away. Let's hear from Kyle. You have had ten days since leaving

:03:52. > :03:57.France. How much work can be done on the grass? Pretty much... Well, I

:03:58. > :04:02.took a couple of days off after the French Open and went home for a bit,

:04:03. > :04:07.which was nice. I got going on Friday of last week. I have been on

:04:08. > :04:13.it nine or ten days, which is nice. You know, we have that extra week in

:04:14. > :04:16.the calendar now, and it makes a huge difference. All of the practice

:04:17. > :04:20.you have done has been in glorious weather, so it's been great? Yes,

:04:21. > :04:27.it's been really hot, hot than anybody expected for England. I

:04:28. > :04:33.think it helps the grass in terms of movement, it doesn't have that, when

:04:34. > :04:37.it is so fresh, during the mornings it can be slippy. I think it helps

:04:38. > :04:41.the movement and the ball speed will be quicker than previous years. One

:04:42. > :04:45.quick question about your opponent, people will make a big deal about

:04:46. > :04:49.what happened when you met in the Davis Cup tie. You worthy innocent

:04:50. > :04:53.bystander, if you like. What was your abiding memory, just winning

:04:54. > :05:01.it? Just the incident, the way it unfolded. Not many matches end in

:05:02. > :05:08.that way. It is very much like a worn in a million incident -- one in

:05:09. > :05:16.a million. I think people have moved on. He will have learned from it and

:05:17. > :05:24.there was no malicious intent, it was just the wrong decision at that

:05:25. > :05:28.time. I've moved on, he has moved on. Just get on with it. Because we

:05:29. > :05:32.are so young, I am sure we will play a few more times in the future. I am

:05:33. > :05:36.sure you will. Best of luck today. It's going to be an interesting

:05:37. > :05:42.match between two very talented players. Kyle's game has improved so

:05:43. > :05:48.much, in so many departments. But Denis has a big shot, big service?

:05:49. > :05:52.He is dangerous, and we always say in tennis to beware of a qualifier.

:05:53. > :05:57.The matches he has won, tough matches, he is ready to go. He's got

:05:58. > :06:00.dangerous weapons. On a day like today, it is fast. If he gets the

:06:01. > :06:04.server cranking, it will be interesting. A lot of power out

:06:05. > :06:08.there. Kyle Edmund, one of the biggest forehands in the game,

:06:09. > :06:12.without question. He has improved his backhand and movement and that

:06:13. > :06:18.has to keep improving, if he is to make the next step. He has made some

:06:19. > :06:23.big steps in the last couple of years. Who knows where he can go?

:06:24. > :06:24.The players will be out in a moment. I don't think people quite

:06:25. > :06:30.understand the difference between playing matches and just practising.

:06:31. > :06:36.It is that match mentality that I such a difference, which is why

:06:37. > :06:43.qualifiers are so dangerous? We are talking about Shapovalov...

:06:44. > :06:49.Shapovalov? Tyre by the time we start, dating, that will be fine.

:06:50. > :06:56.The first round of qualifying as a dirty match. You get the job done

:06:57. > :06:59.anyway you can. He's just turned 18. All of these matches go in the tank

:07:00. > :07:07.and you call upon them. We will not see the best of Denis until he is

:07:08. > :07:12.22, 23. This is a chance to see the junior Wimbledon champion from last

:07:13. > :07:16.year developing. In front of this crowd, this is a big moment for him.

:07:17. > :07:22.He's 18. He hasn't done anything yet. He struggled a little bit being

:07:23. > :07:26.away from home. As any 17, 18, 19-year-old will do. It is all part

:07:27. > :07:30.of the adjustment. Putting these matches in the tank, in the

:07:31. > :07:33.sunshine, a wonderful tournament, against a home favourite. It is a

:07:34. > :07:45.tough match for Kyle Edmund, absolutely right. He has already

:07:46. > :07:47.played his way in. The weather was good over the weekend. Certainly a

:07:48. > :07:50.dangerous one. Kyle's grass court game is not quite his clay-court

:07:51. > :07:56.game or hard court game yet. It may yet be. He is desperate to win

:07:57. > :08:01.matches at Wimbledon. It was interesting when you are talking

:08:02. > :08:04.about teenagers, if we will see another immense teenage talent like

:08:05. > :08:11.we did with Boris Becker, Bjorn Borg, Rafa Nadal. The game has

:08:12. > :08:15.changed, hasn't it? It is difficult for kids to have the physicality as

:08:16. > :08:19.well as the match experience to be right at the top of the game.

:08:20. > :08:23.Absolutely, you could get some flash in the pan good results, here and

:08:24. > :08:31.there. Nowadays, to jump from a 17-year-old into winning slams, it

:08:32. > :08:34.is tough. The men's game in particular, there are such amazing

:08:35. > :08:37.physical specimens out there. Earlier than they would have

:08:38. > :08:41.expected, that is why we had the delay after the last match. Nobody

:08:42. > :08:51.expecting Kyrgios to default after the first step. He was having a good

:08:52. > :08:56.match, looking at the TV. Then they said, are you ready to play? He is a

:08:57. > :09:00.very laid-back bloke, Kyle Edmund. It is helpful to be out on the tour,

:09:01. > :09:13.we were talking about the adjustment that Shapovalov has. Shapovalov!

:09:14. > :09:16.That he had to make. It is about knowing how to get the best out of

:09:17. > :09:21.yourself. You can only find the way to get the best out of yourself over

:09:22. > :09:25.time, through trial and error. Massive match for this young man. We

:09:26. > :09:29.will talk more about the players in a moment. We are going to look ahead

:09:30. > :09:33.to tomorrow. A wonderful order of play today. A shame the matches were

:09:34. > :09:52.a little bit one-sided. Stars galore on Centre Court.

:09:53. > :09:58.Some big serves there. Also, we will be keeping an eye on Court Number

:09:59. > :10:01.One. James Ward has been given a wildcard as he tries to make his way

:10:02. > :10:12.back in the game, against Julien Benneteau.

:10:13. > :10:22.We will be on air at one o'clock on BBC Two. Of course, the red button

:10:23. > :10:25.starts at 12 class -- 12 o'clock. Let's talk about Kyle and what he

:10:26. > :10:31.learned from the likes of spending time with Andy Murray. He has really

:10:32. > :10:35.taken him under his wing? He is a great practice partner. Kyle is as

:10:36. > :10:41.well. He hits his forehand as hard as anybody in the game. He had the

:10:42. > :10:45.same forehand at 16, 17, 18 years of age. That was natural power. He

:10:46. > :10:49.continued to develop it. His body has changed completely in the last

:10:50. > :10:58.couple of years. Physically, he is so strong. He has the air of

:10:59. > :11:05.somebody that believes that. That is a nervous umpire! I joke. To have

:11:06. > :11:11.somebody like Andy Murray, all about work ethic, maximising talent, to

:11:12. > :11:15.have him in your country and have him invite you to his place to

:11:16. > :11:21.train, to be around every aspect and detail of what Andy does from

:11:22. > :11:30.training, food, rest, it is invaluable. That is one of the

:11:31. > :11:36.reasons why Andy, Judy, well done on her OBE. This expertise must not be

:11:37. > :11:41.lost. Even if you are only 80 in the world, you have been a pro, don't

:11:42. > :11:43.let former players leave the game in any shape. They bring huge

:11:44. > :11:49.experience within that can be learned from. He is very lucky to

:11:50. > :11:52.have Murray around. And Andy has done so much in the Davis Cup,

:11:53. > :11:59.bringing the younger players in. Spending time with him really helps.

:12:00. > :12:03.If you are a professional player, hang around with the winners. That

:12:04. > :12:09.is the way to do it. If you get a chance to hang around with the

:12:10. > :12:12.winners, that is where you learn everything, the mentality, what they

:12:13. > :12:15.put in to win these matches, the physicality of it all. He is so

:12:16. > :12:19.lucky to be involved with somebody like Andy Murray to pass on that

:12:20. > :12:23.stuff. But then you've got to be prepared to do the work like Andy

:12:24. > :12:27.Murray has, Kyle Edmund does. It's all right saying, he does this, but

:12:28. > :12:31.you go out and do what they do. The work rate they put in is

:12:32. > :12:35.unbelievable, Kyle Edmund apparently gets in there and is as good as all

:12:36. > :12:39.of them. He has improved very quickly in his game. They are by no

:12:40. > :12:42.means the finished product, there is a lot of work he has to do, the

:12:43. > :12:52.volleys, the movement, the defending, even the backhand. But he

:12:53. > :12:55.has weapons. He has a big serve. You have those weapons in your game,

:12:56. > :13:00.there is a lot to build on. What a platform that is. Also, he loves

:13:01. > :13:05.clay courts. He reached the third round of Roland Garros. He took Rafa

:13:06. > :13:17.Nadal the Nick the distance. This is his worst surface, but he

:13:18. > :13:24.didn't play last year well at Queen's. He is starting to learn the

:13:25. > :13:28.service. I expect him to do well. And I expect to have a good

:13:29. > :13:31.Wimbledon. He hasn't had one before, but no reason why not. He just has

:13:32. > :13:38.to improve on grass, and he will do. A lot of it is about the. Even Milos

:13:39. > :13:45.Raonic said it was a big issue for him. Drill after drill. You just

:13:46. > :13:51.have to keep working on it. You have to watch how the top players defend.

:13:52. > :13:54.It is a learning curve, when to come into the net, when not to. He has

:13:55. > :14:06.definitely improved his technique on the volley a long way. For Denis, it

:14:07. > :14:10.was his Davis Cup debut when that unfortunate event happened, but what

:14:11. > :14:13.an incredible Davis Cup debut Kyle Edmund had, going into the final,

:14:14. > :14:18.how well he played against David Goffin. It just shows he is not

:14:19. > :14:22.frightened of a big crowd. That was a big sign for me. He could have

:14:23. > :14:25.easily hid under the covers in that match, going out in the finals,

:14:26. > :14:28.being thrown in writing to a match like that, for the first two sets he

:14:29. > :14:33.was playing like he was number one in the world. He eventually ran out

:14:34. > :14:39.of steam. But if he puts on self out there, he has won two Davis Cup

:14:40. > :14:42.matches on his own. There are a lot of positives about his game. I sense

:14:43. > :14:46.that this fellow in the picture right now will be talked about a lot

:14:47. > :14:50.in the next four or five years. Probably in through a four weeks,

:14:51. > :14:58.because he has a game that is built for grass. That big lefty serve,

:14:59. > :15:03.that will be playing into his weaker wing, the backhand. He is going to

:15:04. > :15:08.try to attack the backhand. Also, the movement, particularly in the

:15:09. > :15:14.left court, it is a double whammy. The court they played on in Canada

:15:15. > :15:20.indoors is very quick. Shapovalov may have enough game to not allow

:15:21. > :15:28.Kyle Edmund to dominate like he did in the rallies. He was manoeuvring

:15:29. > :15:35.around a bit. I have a feeling that Shapovalov will keep the points a

:15:36. > :15:40.lot shorter than in that match. The problem with Shapovalov, he sees the

:15:41. > :15:43.ball and thinks he's going to hit a winner. He doesn't know how to

:15:44. > :15:48.create points, to walk the ball around. He goes for winners, he has

:15:49. > :15:52.such faith in his ability. A certain Boris Becker was like that at one

:15:53. > :15:56.stage. Then out of the blue he harnessed it together and won

:15:57. > :15:59.Wimbledon. In a month and a half, I saw him at the Italian open in a few

:16:00. > :16:08.weeks before that and practised with him. He looked like this player

:16:09. > :16:13.where you would go, OK, I few weeks later he wins Wimbledon. The way

:16:14. > :16:19.Boris won here, the style of play, it is the confidence, isn't it? More

:16:20. > :16:22.than anything else? Very similar. I don't know Shapovalov, but I have a

:16:23. > :16:26.feeling that he has absolute faith in his ability to hit winners

:16:27. > :16:31.whenever he sees the ball. It is great, it could be great, and if he

:16:32. > :16:35.could just sometimes look at it and say, the percentage of winning that

:16:36. > :16:39.point, that shot, that is two out of ten, I will wait for the next ball

:16:40. > :16:42.before I go for the huge winner. At the moment, he doesn't have it. If

:16:43. > :16:46.he learns to harness that power, watch out, he will be very

:16:47. > :16:54.dangerous. It was interesting, listening to Chris talking about the

:16:55. > :16:56.next generation, watching the game, and you think about the next

:16:57. > :17:04.generation of players. There seems to have been a few, including

:17:05. > :17:09.Shapovalov. Kyrgios, we have always been talking about him. There are a

:17:10. > :17:21.lot of good players. I don't think we have so much to worry about. Andy

:17:22. > :17:24.Murray was in the papers the other day, maybe in two or three years,

:17:25. > :17:27.the physicality of this game, we have a good generation coming

:17:28. > :17:32.behind. We have no worries about men's tennis in the next five or six

:17:33. > :17:36.years, even if the top stars decide it is time for them to leave. We

:17:37. > :17:40.have a lot of players coming in that I that I think I going to be big

:17:41. > :17:44.stars. It will be interesting to see this. A real test against the body

:17:45. > :17:47.who really proved himself in qualifying. An exciting match to

:17:48. > :17:54.look forward to. Time for you to head to the commentary box.

:17:55. > :18:00.This is going to be one of those matches were you think you might be

:18:01. > :18:11.watching the development of a future star player. Denis Shapovalov

:18:12. > :18:18.against Kyle Edmund, which is a lot easier to say. One is in the top 50,

:18:19. > :18:23.one is in the top 100 for the first time. Last year's Wimbledon junior

:18:24. > :18:24.champion at the near end, receiving serve from Kyle Edmund, the British

:18:25. > :19:05.number two. Kyle Edmund starts the match with

:19:06. > :19:52.two points of his own, can he make it three?

:19:53. > :19:59.Very tidy start for the British player. Already a Davis Cup winner

:20:00. > :20:06.for Great Britain, when they beat Belgium in the final.

:20:07. > :20:13.We talk about the influence of Andy Murray, practising with him. That is

:20:14. > :20:17.Leon Smith, the Davis Cup captain, who led the team that year. You talk

:20:18. > :20:21.about the influences, it is not just practising with them in the

:20:22. > :20:25.off-season, but to watch him close up, competing that year, was quite

:20:26. > :20:26.something. Andy Murray is in action tomorrow, the top seed, five-time

:20:27. > :21:45.champion of the event. This is undoubtedly an exciting

:21:46. > :21:54.player. The service motion, Lucy -- loose, is look at this delivery.

:21:55. > :22:09.This sort of age, you can play five sets, take and how off and play five

:22:10. > :22:27.more. Decent hold from 0-15. Always nice

:22:28. > :22:34.to get a settler, playing on a big court for the first time.

:22:35. > :22:39.Gorgeous, looking back to this clubhouse. They have had

:22:40. > :22:41.international rugby matches, international football matches and

:22:42. > :22:51.great events aside. I am sure John Inverdale will keep

:22:52. > :22:59.us up to speed with the history of the club throughout the week.

:23:00. > :23:06.I am sure property developers have flown into Heathrow, looked down at

:23:07. > :23:20.this patch of ground and thought, I wouldn't mind some of that.

:23:21. > :23:26.That is the sort of shot I was talking about, with his thought

:23:27. > :23:31.process. Going for a clean winner from four feet behind the baseline.

:23:32. > :23:36.Your percentage chance on that was probably one or two out of ten to

:23:37. > :23:37.make it. He sees a little space and thinks, I'll have some of that, I'll

:23:38. > :23:58.go for a winner. There are not too many players who

:23:59. > :24:07.have this sort of rocket speed through the ball as Kyle Edmund has

:24:08. > :24:31.on that forehand. No take-back, just bang.

:24:32. > :25:01.He made his tour level debut here in 2015.

:25:02. > :25:08.Since 2013, Kyle Edmund has made his way quite quickly into the top 50.

:25:09. > :25:12.Down to 47 now, but hovering around a point in the rankings where if he

:25:13. > :25:15.goes up a little bit more and wins a few matches he could get seeded at

:25:16. > :25:20.the Grand Slam championships, not just get into them. That would make

:25:21. > :25:28.a big difference to him. It certainly would. You always want

:25:29. > :25:32.that. The improvement is there to say in his game. He looks a more

:25:33. > :25:36.polished player. There is no real weakness. Certainly his ground

:25:37. > :25:40.strokes have improved. Just the movement, still, but that will

:25:41. > :25:46.improve. Are you talking defensive movement? Defensive movement. When

:25:47. > :25:50.he is out wide, he doesn't have that sort of flexibility like Murray or

:25:51. > :25:54.Djokovic, where they come out wide and can still punch the ball back,

:25:55. > :25:58.sometimes come over it and get it deep into the court, neutralise and

:25:59. > :26:06.immediately make the point a 50-50 proposition. Kyle Edmund, when he is

:26:07. > :26:11.out wide, you think it is 80-20 for his opponent. Is the racket head

:26:12. > :26:15.control a natural ability? That also comes into it, of course. But I do

:26:16. > :26:18.also believe it is getting their quick enough, where you have enough

:26:19. > :26:22.time to hit the ground strokes. I don't think he does not quite as

:26:23. > :27:08.well. Not as well as the big guys. That can be improved on.

:27:09. > :27:16.Soft hands. Not too many players can hit the ball as clearly and as hard

:27:17. > :27:22.as he does. Very few players have everything.

:27:23. > :27:48.I'm very excited about Shapovalov. I think he's good.

:27:49. > :27:56.He is a box of chocolate is on the tennis court. He does remind me a

:27:57. > :28:00.bit of Boris Becker. In terms of the way he plays. And his mindset the

:28:01. > :30:04.court. I wonder... Definitely has a problem

:30:05. > :30:12.with the equipment. Not quite sure if one of the Knox might have

:30:13. > :30:17.slipped. -- Notts. I'm not sure what he's talking to the umpire about it.

:30:18. > :30:19.He looks over to Martin Laurendeau, his coach and the Canada Davis Cup

:30:20. > :31:03.captain. Kyle Edmund, twice a quarter

:31:04. > :31:09.finalist this year, in Brisbane which is before the Australian Open,

:31:10. > :31:14.early in the year, always curtails a good New Year's Eve! And Delray

:31:15. > :31:19.Beach where he lost to Raonic having lost to Wawrinka in Brisbane. It is

:31:20. > :31:23.taking fine players to beat him. Could finalist at Queen's Club last

:31:24. > :31:28.year but at the French Open he beat Renzo Olivo who were beaten

:31:29. > :31:32.Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the first round and that was to reach the

:31:33. > :31:37.third round. He was in good form going into the match with Kevin

:31:38. > :31:41.Anderson and had a two sets to one lead to match his performance with

:31:42. > :31:45.the US Open from the year before and make the fourth round of a Grand

:31:46. > :31:51.Slam so that consistency at the big event is becoming a factor in what

:31:52. > :32:07.he's doing. Yes. Whereas it is all new for this man. Only 18 years of

:32:08. > :32:14.age two weeks ago. Really a juvenile in terms of his experience. And he

:32:15. > :34:06.will not know how to get the best out of his game for a while.

:34:07. > :34:17.APPLAUSE That return just landing a little

:34:18. > :34:21.bit short. It gets the treatment! He throws himself at it, he comes from

:34:22. > :34:28.a very athletic background and you can see it all. His mother, Tessa,

:34:29. > :34:34.was a tennis coach and his father, Victor, was involved in volleyball.

:34:35. > :35:15.Born in Tel Aviv. Started playing when he was five with mum.

:35:16. > :35:30.That is good tennis, very good depth on those ground strokes from Kyle

:35:31. > :35:33.Edmund. A lot of pace as well. Always in command on that baseline,

:35:34. > :35:51.just manoeuvring his opponent around.

:35:52. > :36:41.113 mph second serve with work on it. To an opponent's strength. This

:36:42. > :36:43.is the nice way to change the view and not be predictable. His coach

:36:44. > :37:09.has a lot to deal with. Very nice, really nice change-up and

:37:10. > :37:14.change of pace, that one slipping out wide at 120 mph. It does not

:37:15. > :37:19.feel that fast but it is a lazy power. It is, it does not look like

:37:20. > :37:26.he is putting in a lot of effort but the great servers always have that

:37:27. > :37:32.ability. He won his first Challenger this year in Diamondville which is

:37:33. > :37:39.in Canada. The next week he went to Guadalajara and was runner-up.

:37:40. > :37:44.Including Futures tournaments he has had a winning streak of 17 matches.

:37:45. > :37:46.Martin Laurendeau organising the schedule properly. You have to get

:37:47. > :38:14.matches at this age. That winning streak was ended by

:38:15. > :38:21.Manchester's Liam Brodie. Who he actually beat in the first round of

:38:22. > :38:27.qualifying here, 6-4, six were on -- 6-4, 6-4.

:38:28. > :38:41.That volley was a case of waiting for the ball to come to you instead

:38:42. > :39:12.of going to meet it. Strong second. Not many rallies so

:39:13. > :39:20.far. No. This is very quick tennis, not messing around. If anything goes

:39:21. > :39:45.past about three or four shots it is a surprise.

:39:46. > :40:03.He worked this well, this was a really good backhand and that was

:40:04. > :40:08.the one where he opened up the court. He looks pretty comfortable

:40:09. > :40:13.at the net. That is the coaching, physio,

:40:14. > :40:47.dietician setup, agents. APPLAUSE

:40:48. > :40:57.That volley Ms on the second point of this game has put Kyle Edmund in

:40:58. > :41:00.this position -- miss. Both players aware of where the last serve on

:41:01. > :41:36.this side went which was down the middle for an ace.

:41:37. > :41:48.A slight miss it. -- mis-hit. He thought it was actually in and

:41:49. > :42:13.apologised for the mis-hit. I thought it's drifted wide.

:42:14. > :42:20.APPLAUSE Absolute bread and butter, first

:42:21. > :42:27.serve and amid mid-court ball dispatched by Kyle Edmund to lead

:42:28. > :42:31.4-3. Not too many players travel by themselves any more unless they are

:42:32. > :42:36.between coaches and now with the teams, especially in home countries,

:42:37. > :42:40.it can be quite sizeable. A number of people in the box for Kyle

:42:41. > :42:46.Edmund, Leon Smith on the left-hand side with the dieticians, Frazer

:42:47. > :42:49.Wright, his management, for those of you familiar with the Lamancha club,

:42:50. > :42:55.former director of tennis in Spain there. Ryan Jones with the Black Hat

:42:56. > :43:00.looking away from us, he is the coach and he has done a fabulous job

:43:01. > :43:04.with Kyle Edmund, adding what needs to be added, getting him playing the

:43:05. > :43:08.right tournaments. And looking ahead, you said earlier talking to

:43:09. > :43:13.Sue Barker, that he has made progress quicker than you thought?

:43:14. > :43:18.Yes, I think he has. When I was first aware of him three or four

:43:19. > :43:24.years ago to me he looked as if he had a lot of gaps in his game. But

:43:25. > :43:27.he has certainly improved a lot. He has a good team around him and I'm

:43:28. > :43:36.glad they make a lot of money these days otherwise they would go broke!

:43:37. > :43:43.This time last year he got himself a two bed flat during the tournament,

:43:44. > :43:44.during Wimbledon, they were delivering fridges! Real life goes

:43:45. > :43:56.on! I remember when he bought his first

:43:57. > :44:00.car as well, he was so proud of that. We look at tennis players who

:44:01. > :44:07.go out there and expect them to just switch it on, but real life as well

:44:08. > :44:12.as the life of a professional tennis player. Kyle Edmund settled into the

:44:13. > :44:22.top 50 and looks comfortable. 4-3 to him, new balls. 132 there. That is a

:44:23. > :44:25.big serve and he still looks to me like he has plenty more power, that

:44:26. > :44:48.is the scary part. Absolutely. He has got the John Isner bounce

:44:49. > :45:24.beforehand, just between the legs. He has got a lot better serve than

:45:25. > :45:55.his coach ever had! There is an example, just a sort of

:45:56. > :46:02.sloppy point, 30-15 up, a good return from Kyle Edmund but totally

:46:03. > :46:05.off-balance from Shapovalov, didn't get his feet right and went for an

:46:06. > :47:20.unnecessary shot and has now put himself in some trouble.

:47:21. > :47:28.He is using that wide serve, the server that left-handers often don't

:47:29. > :47:34.use enough, out to the forehand of the right-hander. It almost looks

:47:35. > :47:40.like that is his favourite serve on that forehand side, he has used it a

:47:41. > :47:50.lot. Well held. And very nicely done. A very close relationship he

:47:51. > :47:57.has with Martin Laurendeau, I think they are both in good hands here. He

:47:58. > :48:08.was a very considered player, got to about 90 in the world, fourth round

:48:09. > :48:11.of a US Open, Laurendeau. He has Milos Raonic and Vasek Pospisil to

:48:12. > :48:29.choose from now for Canada. And now this talented young man.

:48:30. > :48:43.This is a worrying match for Kyle Edmund. He is capable of stringing

:48:44. > :50:18.some big winners together. But it is risky.

:50:19. > :50:25.That was a very important shot from Kyle Edmund, that forehand he looked

:50:26. > :50:30.like he was in a bit of trouble but he hooked it back having been pretty

:50:31. > :50:34.deep and that was a big forehand at 15-30 will stop Shapovalov thought

:50:35. > :50:35.he was in the drivers seat to go up two break points but an excellent

:50:36. > :50:53.recovery. He kept himself in nicely. And now

:50:54. > :50:59.Kyle Edmund facing a break point against this 18-year-old Canadian.

:51:00. > :51:14.Junior Wimbledon champion last year. Always an indicator of talent.

:51:15. > :51:31.Line ball. 107 mph, a big serve, break point down.

:51:32. > :51:35.Shapovalov perhaps could have pushed it back in, he was committed to

:51:36. > :52:01.taking a big swing. Break point saved by Kyle Edmund,

:52:02. > :52:09.showing a little bit of courage out on the court to keep his nose in

:52:10. > :52:18.front. He did well. That was a bit shaky but he came up with some big

:52:19. > :52:24.serves and a big forehand at 15-30. Shapovalov is not an easy guy to

:52:25. > :52:30.play. He is this raw talent. He comes at you and if you don't hit

:52:31. > :52:36.the ball deep, he will go for winners on almost every ball. They

:52:37. > :52:42.can string together a lot of aces, tough to return against. -- he can

:52:43. > :53:05.string together. A hot day here, the players being

:53:06. > :53:10.shielded from the sun. 33 Celsius, 88 degrees Fahrenheit in old money.

:53:11. > :53:14.It will not bother these players. No, and the French Open was toasty

:53:15. > :53:18.as well, it was not like they came from a cold one. They are used to

:53:19. > :53:22.the hot weather. Best of three sets as well. Best of five sets, it might

:53:23. > :53:43.be a different matter. Perfect playing surface. Day one,

:53:44. > :53:46.this is the fourth match, sadly Nick Kyrgios pad to retire. Sue Barker

:53:47. > :53:51.will get you up to speed with all of that later on.

:53:52. > :54:04.Very good. Looking for signs of this match awareness in the expression of

:54:05. > :54:07.the ability which she has and this was beautifully done. -- which he

:54:08. > :55:20.has. Well played, Kyle Edmund, because

:55:21. > :55:31.that was a big serve as well. He managed to stretch out his poor and

:55:32. > :55:36.knock it back deep. -- his paw. It came as a bit of a surprise to Denis

:55:37. > :55:53.. Here is a moment in the first set. And once again Edmund does well bite

:55:54. > :55:54.knocking it back into play. A very heavy forehand from Kyle Edmund,

:55:55. > :56:08.deep. Where does Shapovalov serve? Where

:56:09. > :56:17.does he like to serve on these big points because here is one. Set

:56:18. > :56:24.point. And not surprisingly he goes out wide. Slightly slower, making

:56:25. > :56:31.sure he got it in. Some decent match play. This forehand was not as easy

:56:32. > :56:42.as it looked, it stayed pretty low. Good forehand.

:56:43. > :57:27.Remember, Kyle Edmund has the second serve onto the line in the previous

:57:28. > :57:32.game, break point down. This is some of the most competitive tennis we

:57:33. > :57:38.have seen on day one on Centre Court. 9500 people, the capacity.

:57:39. > :57:44.Increased by 2000 since last year. Quite a spectacle. It is the biggest

:57:45. > :59:48.stadium used in these ATP 500 tournaments.

:59:49. > :00:18.Kyle Edmund is from Yorkshire, and there is a tournament up there.

:00:19. > :00:27.Lovely place. The Ilkley Challenger. Edgbaston Priory is another place, a

:00:28. > :00:31.very relaxed atmosphere but a great facility. Well done to the community

:00:32. > :00:43.up there and the chairman. First-class venue. I have seen Kyle

:00:44. > :00:49.Edmund's dad there. He likes to watch the tennis. They don't get

:00:50. > :00:58.many chances to watch it. His mum gets nervous. He has had a number of

:00:59. > :01:10.coaches over time. Ryan Jones has done an excellent job. He had

:01:11. > :01:23.Richard Clews, John Black. Now you see a fully fledged top 50 player.

:01:24. > :01:27.Given his age, you would think his success will be comparable with Andy

:01:28. > :02:22.Murray. What a serve. Was that a second

:02:23. > :02:24.serve!? That was a second serve. He just rose it up and goes for it. No

:02:25. > :03:06.fear in his game. A lot of pace on that ball. Kyle

:03:07. > :03:10.Edmund will be disappointed with that return. In the service line

:03:11. > :03:32.area, that is going to get punished. He likes that shot, too. Sliced

:03:33. > :03:33.backhand. Didn't try to much, made sure he got a deep with a little bit

:03:34. > :04:15.of side spin. This could be an interesting tie.

:04:16. > :04:17.Shapovalov, you don't know with him, he could string five together in a

:04:18. > :05:48.row or hit it five feet out. No returns in play yet in this

:05:49. > :06:36.tie-breaker. Three errors. Just wide. There is the mini-break.

:06:37. > :06:41.Gorgeous backhands. Pulled wide a couple of times. Didn't think he

:06:42. > :07:12.could get that kind of pace at full stretch, but he did.

:07:13. > :07:20.Down! I don't believe he won that point!

:07:21. > :07:30.He popped up like he had springs in his behind, didn't he? Just played a

:07:31. > :07:38.little table tennis shot, bunted it back. Kyle played him back in.

:07:39. > :07:40.Didn't have to move. Exactly. Too bad for him, but certainly a break

:07:41. > :08:05.for Shapovalov. That is the mixture. A couple of

:08:06. > :08:18.brilliant points, and then the error, a sloppy point.

:08:19. > :08:25.I must find out what he says to him in these situations, or about these

:08:26. > :08:30.situations. You are for - one up, you have got a great break, played

:08:31. > :08:36.well, 4-1. And then use market ten foot wide. Do you want him to keep

:08:37. > :08:54.on going for that? That's the whole thing.

:08:55. > :09:02.Having a little discussion about whether he is going to challenge

:09:03. > :09:07.that. He has elected not to. I would love to know if that was in. It is a

:09:08. > :09:14.challenge. He took his time. It wasn't immediate. That is long.

:09:15. > :09:28.Second serve, after a delay. There is a bird on the court now,

:09:29. > :09:53.looking for an early tea. That is one of the worst serves that

:09:54. > :10:19.Shapovalov has hit. Bad error from Kyle Edmund not to make a return.

:10:20. > :10:25.Sounds like somebody is getting rid of their MPs underneath the main

:10:26. > :11:19.stand. There is going to be a few of them today.

:11:20. > :11:29.That's exciting, when you see a player that can hit shots from that

:11:30. > :11:33.far deep, with the power and accuracy. Awesome forehand. Kyle

:11:34. > :11:42.Edmund could have used a first serve there. Now, three set points, the

:11:43. > :12:05.first two will be the Shapovalov server.

:12:06. > :12:12.It will be interesting to see where he hits this next serve. He has had

:12:13. > :12:23.a lot success going to the Edmund forehand, which is his strength.

:12:24. > :12:50.The let really helped him. It brought it back in. First serve.

:12:51. > :13:04.Oh! Well, that is impressive indeed. Tight first set. There could be a

:13:05. > :13:05.lot of tennis to come. In terms of a mini battle, it was Shapovalov that

:13:06. > :13:18.won that one. First set to him. What a match we have here. So close.

:13:19. > :13:22.What a prospect Shapovalov assuring us. 18 years old, but very much at

:13:23. > :13:26.home on Centre Court. Kyle Edmund, the British and but too, in action

:13:27. > :13:55.at the moment. Tomorrow it is this man, Britainnumber one.

:13:56. > :14:03.He will be third on Centre Court. That will be about four o'clock in

:14:04. > :14:28.the afternoon. He is taking on fellow Brit Aljaz Bedene.

:14:29. > :14:35.That is Centre Court tomorrow. Play starts at 12 o'clock and you can

:14:36. > :14:38.watch on the red button. We will be on BBC Two from one o'clock until

:14:39. > :14:43.six o'clock. Just over 40 minutes to go and a real battle for Kyle Edmund

:14:44. > :14:45.as he takes on this man, who is very much in charge, winning the first

:14:46. > :14:58.set on a tie-break. Denis Shapovalov, it is a name that

:14:59. > :15:02.we are going to have to get used to saying. It really does look like he

:15:03. > :15:09.will be around for awhile. Just 18 years of age, just 18 years of age.

:15:10. > :15:12.Junior Wimbledon champion last year. Another young Canadian player at the

:15:13. > :15:17.moment that has just won a challenge at the age of 16, who is every bit

:15:18. > :15:20.the talents this young man is. They happen to be best friends as well.

:15:21. > :15:31.They are going to be an absolute handful.

:15:32. > :15:36.His name is Felix. Felix and Denis are going to be difficult to play

:15:37. > :16:45.against. When you celebrate a young player,

:16:46. > :16:52.they have done great, these are the moments when you repeat them many

:16:53. > :16:54.times, you know, do not let it down in the first five minutes of the

:16:55. > :18:09.second set. Amazing, the end of a set like that.

:18:10. > :18:13.Dumps his serve to love. That would have gone down in the coach's

:18:14. > :18:21.Brooke, if he has got a book. That was an awful game. Very interesting.

:18:22. > :18:29.Shapovalov has not been holding back, shall we say. Look at how

:18:30. > :18:34.close he is. Nothing down the middle, nothing without function.

:18:35. > :18:40.If they are rallying, they are going to be good and strong, but the

:18:41. > :18:45.winners, he just goes for it. Interesting, more of the winners are

:18:46. > :18:46.going out to Kyle Edmund's forehand, which is the strength. But that is

:18:47. > :19:08.where the room is. His coach will be telling him at the

:19:09. > :19:12.end of the match, whether he wins or loses, loses that point, where did

:19:13. > :19:16.that come from? Forehand error, backhand error, four points in a

:19:17. > :19:21.row. After working so hard to win the first set, looks like he is

:19:22. > :19:24.writing notes. You cannot do that. You might get away with it today,

:19:25. > :19:29.but if you are playing against someone in the top ten and you just

:19:30. > :19:29.give away a break, you can't do that. That's just the learning

:19:30. > :19:53.curve. On the women's two, many of you will

:19:54. > :19:57.have enjoyed Johanna Konta's match. Coaches coming on the court and

:19:58. > :20:02.talking to players. I don't like that.

:20:03. > :20:10.You a Davis Cup captain, and you were able to. You do you're talking

:20:11. > :20:12.there, it helps the players, but you don't like it. You have to do it

:20:13. > :21:42.yourself. Excellent response from the now

:21:43. > :21:44.experienced, seasoned veteran, Kyle Edmund. Well, compared to his

:21:45. > :24:41.opponent, anyway. 22 years of age. I wonder how many college coaches

:24:42. > :24:45.were looking at this young man and thinking, would you like to come and

:24:46. > :24:50.play for a year or two interstates? We can certainly offer you a full

:24:51. > :24:51.scholarship. Elected to go professional, and this is an

:24:52. > :25:05.exciting prospect. So beautiful, that I can't. -- that

:25:06. > :25:16.backhand. He hit it so hard and so wide. The

:25:17. > :25:51.whirling dervish, isn't he? Just that forehand miss from Edmund

:25:52. > :25:55.Burke would have given him 0-30. Certainly, that would have been

:25:56. > :26:02.enough, you would have thought. That Felix fellow, the Canadian one,

:26:03. > :26:09.playing last week, 16 years of age, Canadian, a real prospect as we look

:26:10. > :26:14.at Canadian tennis. Auger Aliassime. 16 years old. Last year he won the

:26:15. > :26:20.US Open juniors to go along with this man's Wimbledon junior title.

:26:21. > :26:25.Now he has broken into the top 250 by becoming the seventh youngest

:26:26. > :26:31.player to win a challenger. The youngest player to break into the

:26:32. > :26:36.top 200 and 50 cents Del Potro. Gasquet was 15, when he broke into

:26:37. > :26:43.the top 250. And they are best friends, these two.

:26:44. > :26:50.It has been fascinating to watch one of the practice sessions with

:26:51. > :26:54.Shapovalov and his coach, to see what drills they do. It's one of

:26:55. > :27:00.those things, to work with somebody with that amount of talent, it must

:27:01. > :27:04.be fantastic. On the other hand, you must feel like pulling your hair

:27:05. > :27:08.out. The simple things, sometimes, simple shot selection, doesn't seem

:27:09. > :27:13.to exist in his game plan at the moment. Do you push him to not make

:27:14. > :27:17.mistakes and sort of curve that? Does it take away from the

:27:18. > :27:22.exuberance of going for winners all the time? There is a balance there.

:27:23. > :27:38.He has an experienced coach with him. It's not easy.

:27:39. > :27:48.As we look at this teenager, I think back to another one we saw in 2005,

:27:49. > :27:50.making his debut. Andy Murray. The difference with Andy Murray, even at

:27:51. > :27:56.that age, you can see that he thought ahead. He had two or three

:27:57. > :28:00.game plans. Even at that age, he knew what to do. The instinct was

:28:01. > :28:06.there. Shapovalov seems to just have an A. If it works, watch out. If it

:28:07. > :28:25.doesn't, I'll see you next week. It was a Davies hot when he Tommy

:28:26. > :28:29.Johannson. In the third set he keeled over from cramp. How exciting

:28:30. > :31:19.that was to see his arrival. He's not getting first serves in in

:31:20. > :31:26.this set so far. The first of these service games to love, having won

:31:27. > :31:45.the first set. Shapovalov. That will do.

:31:46. > :31:58.It is not a service motion that's going to go away for a long time,

:31:59. > :32:00.John. Might have a few minutes where he will find the mark but it's

:32:01. > :33:39.always going to come back. He has had his chances, Kyle Edmund,

:33:40. > :33:46.to extend the lead, he still a break up.

:33:47. > :33:50.Yes, Kyle Edmund with a break of serve and we will be right back with

:33:51. > :33:54.this much. We still have 20 minutes to go before we move to the red

:33:55. > :33:59.button on BBC Two so let's show you what has been happening on the

:34:00. > :34:08.opening day of the Aegon Championships. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

:34:09. > :34:17.was not on court for very long. Mannarino had a back injury, and

:34:18. > :34:22.Jo-Wilfried Tsonga cruised through. Grigor Dimitrov also only lost for

:34:23. > :34:26.micro-games in his match against the talented Ryan Harrison who defends

:34:27. > :34:31.the ball so well. It was beautiful striking from dimmer

:34:32. > :34:42.-- Grigor Dimitrov, who moves so well. But the big story today, you

:34:43. > :34:49.will be reading about this man tomorrow, Nick Kyrgios. This

:34:50. > :34:55.happened... And he has already had a hip injury in the clay court season.

:34:56. > :35:01.He lost that set and the tie-break and decided he wanted to concentrate

:35:02. > :35:06.on Wimbledon and didn't feel the injury was good enough to carry on

:35:07. > :35:14.three sets. We hope he will be OK for Wimbledon and a couple of weeks.

:35:15. > :35:22.Tomas Berdych went through against Darcis. Tomas Berdych through,

:35:23. > :35:27.although he dropped his serve in both sets. That's what's been

:35:28. > :35:29.happening earlier today. Now back to this one, and still about 20 minutes

:35:30. > :35:52.to go here on BBC Two. COMMENTATOR: We are not likely to

:35:53. > :35:53.get any delays for rain this year, temperatures touching 90 degrees

:35:54. > :36:49.today. 32, 30 three Celsius. He has had his chances to push ahead

:36:50. > :36:50.and get a second break, and suddenly you find yourself under a bit of

:36:51. > :38:30.pressure on your own delivery. Some good serving there from Kyle

:38:31. > :39:05.Edmund, particularly that last serve. Good kick out wide.

:39:06. > :39:21.Where did that come from? Would slice there, really kept low and I

:39:22. > :39:29.thought this was a winner. Not sure how he did that. I'm not sure

:39:30. > :39:41.either. It was an aggressive punch shot below the level of the net. I

:39:42. > :39:46.mean his forehand is the headline shot. He's going to run around the

:39:47. > :39:50.backhand all day long to play beforehand, but the backhand... It

:39:51. > :39:54.looks beautifully produced and very flexible with a slice, you can come

:39:55. > :40:20.over it nicely. Slice and moving behind that. Volleys OK.

:40:21. > :40:42.What a second serve that was! Decent cake. -- decent kick. That's the

:40:43. > :40:45.best game he has played for a while. His coach will be thinking, why

:40:46. > :40:50.didn't you play that sort of service game at the beginning of the second

:40:51. > :40:57.set? Because he was still thinking about the end of the first set.

:40:58. > :41:08.Exactly. This time last year Kyle Edmund was beating Simon. He

:41:09. > :41:13.eventually lost to Andy Murray, took one set of him. He is no newcomer

:41:14. > :41:20.any more. I suppose the highlight of his career was the US Open last

:41:21. > :41:28.year, he beat Richard Gasquet in the first round and played John Isner.

:41:29. > :41:32.Tremendous effort. He looked flat and tired against Novak Djokovic in

:41:33. > :41:37.round four but that is the calibre of player Kyle Edmund has become

:41:38. > :41:41.now. He feels like a top 50 player and he is. I think his match against

:41:42. > :41:47.Andy Murray last year was certainly the best grass court match he's ever

:41:48. > :41:52.played, and although he lost there was some brilliant ground strokes

:41:53. > :41:59.coming from both players. But he's not at that level today at the

:42:00. > :42:03.moment. The first round of the tournament, adjusting after the clay

:42:04. > :42:04.court season, not easy. Still got a lot of work to do to get through

:42:05. > :43:37.this one. It's good serving in that game, very

:43:38. > :45:14.good serving. Just that one service game, one

:45:15. > :45:22.little piece of lost concentration in the very first game of this set.

:45:23. > :45:28.From Shapovalov, who lost his opening service game to love having

:45:29. > :45:55.won the opening tie-break. Small margins.

:45:56. > :46:04.That hold means Kyle Edmund will have to serve for the second set.

:46:05. > :46:08.And we will be back for that because Kyle Edmund showing what a great

:46:09. > :46:12.match player he is, dropping the first set and then breaking

:46:13. > :46:17.straightaway which has given him a cushion in the second set. Looking

:46:18. > :46:22.ahead to tomorrow, and we will see this man. This was Andy Murray

:46:23. > :46:29.earlier today in training with his training partner there, Matt little.

:46:30. > :46:35.This is what athletes do, working on getting on the mark quickly for the

:46:36. > :46:38.return of serve. How the warm up sessions have trained, you practice

:46:39. > :46:41.so different from what it was years ago, but that was Andy Murray

:46:42. > :46:55.earlier today and tomorrow he will be on the Centre Court to play Aljaz

:46:56. > :47:16.Bedene. Just about ten minutes of our time

:47:17. > :47:19.on BBC Two before we move our coverage to the red button. So here

:47:20. > :47:25.is Kyle Edmund serving for the second set.

:47:26. > :47:29.COMMENTATOR: Shapovalov has run to his baseline, Kyle Edmund won't mind

:47:30. > :47:46.that too much. Serving for one set all.

:47:47. > :49:14.A first-class reaction from Kyle Edmund after he saw that forehand

:49:15. > :49:23.flash past him on the first point. No panic. One hour and 30 played in

:49:24. > :49:34.the match. Set point to go three sets. Two set points. And Kyle

:49:35. > :49:40.Edmund levels at one set all in this first round match. It's the first

:49:41. > :49:50.match we have seen go the distance on this court today. Jo-Wilfried

:49:51. > :49:56.Tsonga, too good for Adrian Mannarino, who was injured in his

:49:57. > :50:00.match. And Grigor Dimitrov way too good for Ryan Harrison. And we saw

:50:01. > :50:12.Nick Kyrgios unable to continue in his match. Who did he play? Donald

:50:13. > :50:19.Young. Donald, of course. Some of the numbers, John. 33% first serves

:50:20. > :50:25.in is not what you need, down the right-hand side. It is the same in

:50:26. > :50:33.the unforced errors to the winners. Edmund made more unforced errors,

:50:34. > :50:42.double, than Shapovalov, which was a bit of a surprise, but Shapovalov

:50:43. > :50:48.still made the winners. If that -- it was that one bad game he played.

:50:49. > :50:53.I don't think he will be so generous in this third set. Some of you may

:50:54. > :50:58.have heard this name before or heard the story about how at the beginning

:50:59. > :51:01.of February Shapovalov was playing Davis Cup against his opponent

:51:02. > :51:07.today, it was great Britain versus Canada and he smacked the ball when

:51:08. > :51:12.it was two set, he smacked the ball in temper and it hit the umpire and

:51:13. > :51:19.fractured his eye socket. Of course it was instant disqualification. The

:51:20. > :51:24.umpire after an operation was OK, but it was really shocking moment

:51:25. > :51:34.for him and a moment of reflection for him as he came under an enormous

:51:35. > :51:40.amount of criticism. It was a humbling moment, he won't do that

:51:41. > :51:46.again. Is a great kid, it was just one of those mistakes. You might

:51:47. > :51:53.have read about that. It was a big story all around the world for a

:51:54. > :51:57.while. So here we are, he is serving again, Denis Shapovalov, and at this

:51:58. > :52:01.point in the second set having won the first to put in the worst game

:52:02. > :52:06.of the match service will be an interesting reaction as he continues

:52:07. > :52:14.to learn at this level. He's only 18. It is already a start. -- a

:52:15. > :52:48.better start. That's amazing! What a kick on that.

:52:49. > :52:53.That was a John Isner serve. Grigor Dimitrov served a game of aces

:52:54. > :53:01.earlier. Here is for a fourth here. You would go for it on the second,

:53:02. > :53:50.wouldn't you? Down the middle. Exactly!

:53:51. > :54:01.Nicely done. Three aces. Strong start to the second set. That left

:54:02. > :54:07.the serve out wide to them right-hander's forehand, it's got an

:54:08. > :54:13.enormous amount of work on it. And when it hits the line, and digs in

:54:14. > :54:22.on this surface... Imagine receiving this! Doink! There's no way. Because

:54:23. > :54:30.you have to cover the middle with the left hand, because that is the

:54:31. > :55:23.standard serve. He is all fired up once again.

:55:24. > :55:31.SUE BARKER: Sadly we have to leave this match on BBC Two but it

:55:32. > :55:36.continues now on the red button on the BBC sport website, so if you

:55:37. > :55:42.want to continue to watch it, you can by pressing the red button or by

:55:43. > :55:49.logging onto the BBC sport website. Tomorrow we are on at midday on the

:55:50. > :55:51.red button. We come onto BBC Two at one o'clock, and we will see Andy

:55:52. > :56:24.Murray begin his grass court season. # Work it harder

:56:25. > :56:27.Make it better
