:00:46. > :00:52.Earlier this week the weather was hot, the competition was hot, the
:00:53. > :01:04.shops were hot. The seeds were sown, but they wilted in the heat. They
:01:05. > :01:09.wilted in the face of the next generation, a new strain cultivated
:01:10. > :01:10.to be more resistant, more durable, more productive than ever before in
:01:11. > :01:25.the face of aggressors. Today, Queen's is about to
:01:26. > :01:30.experience a climate change, so can be hardy perennials re-establish
:01:31. > :01:35.their pre-eminent or will be new super crops continue to bear fruit?
:01:36. > :01:38.It has been one major shock after another at the April Championships,
:01:39. > :01:44.that has been the big talking point along with the weather, which has
:01:45. > :01:47.been super hot. Today it is much cooler, and the 25 degrees expected,
:01:48. > :01:54.much more enjoyable for all of the fans arriving for today's matches as
:01:55. > :01:56.the players battle for a place in the last eight.
:01:57. > :02:02.This is the line-up on Centre Court at the moment. Marin Cilic on court
:02:03. > :02:07.at the moment, second set, up against Stefan Kozlov from America.
:02:08. > :02:11.Jordan Thompson, the conqueror of Andy Murray, text of the Court
:02:12. > :02:14.against former champion Sam Querrey. And then a little look into the
:02:15. > :02:21.future, Daniil Medvedev against Tennessee Kokkinakis, who took out
:02:22. > :02:25.Milos Raonic. And then Jeremy Chardy against Feliciano Lopez, three-time
:02:26. > :02:29.Wimbledon quarterfinalist. They played last week, three sets to
:02:30. > :02:34.Lopes. Lots to look forward to here today and I am delighted to say
:02:35. > :02:38.Peter and Andrew are with me again. It is such a wonderful tournament,
:02:39. > :02:41.this, some new names emerging and that is quite exciting, although we
:02:42. > :02:46.are disappointed the seeds have gone, it is exciting to see the new
:02:47. > :02:53.breed. We have officially entered the age of parody, there are so many
:02:54. > :02:58.good players that if you come on the grass, the first week on grass seems
:02:59. > :03:03.to be a great leveller, and really anybody can beat anyone. It has been
:03:04. > :03:08.a good tournament for the Aussies as well. It has, you are asking me to
:03:09. > :03:14.be pleased about that, and fair enough, when you deserve victory,
:03:15. > :03:19.you deserve it. The biggest shock we have seen this week, this is a guy
:03:20. > :03:23.who got through qualifying, but there was no lack of effort from
:03:24. > :03:34.Andy Murray, Jordan came up with the answers, he has had everything, and
:03:35. > :03:39.while we might not have the biggest names left today, we will see what
:03:40. > :03:43.the reaction is, and it is interesting, Benassi Kokkinakis back
:03:44. > :03:51.from injury, we will see where he can get to, probably top 20
:03:52. > :03:55.ultimately. Jordan Thomas was out practising today, I was so impressed
:03:56. > :04:00.against Andy Murray first of all how big his serve was, how inventive it
:04:01. > :04:05.was. I agree, and the other thing, probably his greatest asset is his
:04:06. > :04:09.athleticism, he gets around the court so well, ran down so many
:04:10. > :04:14.balls that I think Andy Murray might have thought would be winners and
:04:15. > :04:18.ultimately that probably undermined Murray's confident a bit knowing he
:04:19. > :04:24.had six, seven, eight shots every rally, just wasn't up to it. The
:04:25. > :04:28.attitude as well, wasn't it, would he get a double murders towards the
:04:29. > :04:32.end, he just got better and better. This is a guy who seems happy to
:04:33. > :04:35.grind it out in the qualifiers, a long way from home, a bit of Aussie
:04:36. > :04:39.grit, they have to travel from the word go, that is something to do
:04:40. > :04:44.with building that strength of character and we saw it out there,
:04:45. > :04:48.he has Des Tyson, a former player, who travels with him the whole time
:04:49. > :04:52.and keeps his feet on the ground. He is a man who expect success for the
:04:53. > :04:56.work he has done and now he is getting it. It was just one of those
:04:57. > :05:01.days the other day, no matter where he hit the ball it was the right
:05:02. > :05:20.place, in about a 15 minute period where Murray could have come back,
:05:21. > :05:25.Jordan Rhodes a little bit of luck, played great, I didn't realise he
:05:26. > :05:28.served as well that, so this is what you have to be to be a top 100
:05:29. > :05:31.player, that is the target, which makes it even more amazing that the
:05:32. > :05:33.guys at the top of the game have stayed there for so long, because
:05:34. > :05:36.they have to resist these blokes 35 weeks of the year. It was great to
:05:37. > :05:39.see Kokkinakis back, he was such a great talent when he burst on the
:05:40. > :05:41.scene and it is nice to have that style of tennis back here. Exactly
:05:42. > :05:44.right, he is an aggressive player with a really nice personality, you
:05:45. > :05:47.can see there is some depth to the guy and it will be interesting to
:05:48. > :05:49.see today how he recovers from that long match against Routledge, and
:05:50. > :05:54.with all of the niggling injuries he has had, who knows if any of them
:05:55. > :05:58.will be aggravated. And he is such a popular guy, Kokkinakis, he came off
:05:59. > :06:03.court and there were 200 text messages saying well done when he
:06:04. > :06:09.beat Raonic. In the live tennis now, Marin Cilic
:06:10. > :06:13.is in charge of this match. Break of serve up 4-3 and serving. Let's join
:06:14. > :06:19.our commentators, John Lloyd is alongside Andrew Cotter.
:06:20. > :06:27.Far from one-way traffic in the second set but Cilic just doing
:06:28. > :07:15.enough. The first set was chasing experience for that man.
:07:16. > :07:30.Cilic holds. Might well be his year again. A lot of big names going,
:07:31. > :07:35.still some serious contenders of course, Berdych and Dimmock Rob,
:07:36. > :07:41.Muller is such a dangerous player, Lopes of course. We talk of the big
:07:42. > :07:49.names that have fallen but because there is such depth in the
:07:50. > :08:01.tournament, that doesn't end it. Kozlov serving to stay in the match.
:08:02. > :08:04.You have to look at this scoreline, Kozlov has fed right into Cilic's
:08:05. > :08:16.pattern, it has been very comfortable for him. Having said
:08:17. > :08:22.that, the last two errors on his backhand, he has been awesome today,
:08:23. > :08:28.Cilic, particularly on the forehand side, it has been a devastating
:08:29. > :08:39.shot. He has been hitting winner after winner.
:08:40. > :08:43.We saw nothing to suggest Steve Johnson had not been operating at
:08:44. > :08:50.full capacity and yet this 19-year-old blew him away in the
:08:51. > :08:52.second and third sets but today he has had nothing to trouble Marin
:08:53. > :09:28.Cilic. One of those players, Kozlov, who is
:09:29. > :09:32.trying to make the transition from a very, very successful junior,
:09:33. > :09:37.reached a couple of boys grand slam juniors, two senior. The winner here
:09:38. > :10:19.will play the former world number one junior Donald Young.
:10:20. > :10:30.Another hold for Kozlov. Far better in this second set, it still
:10:31. > :10:34.probably will not be enough. Again, talking about the transition from
:10:35. > :10:38.junior to senior, a lot of it is the physical development as well. Kozlov
:10:39. > :10:42.still looks young, you look at pictures of him a couple of years
:10:43. > :10:46.ago, a little bit chubby and looked very, very young. He is now 19,
:10:47. > :10:50.playing on the senior tour but you can still see he will develop
:10:51. > :10:55.physically a whole lot more. At the moment he is operating on a power
:10:56. > :10:59.level below Cilic. This is the sort of match that, if he loses this next
:11:00. > :11:03.game and loses the match, it is the sort of thing that he will sit down
:11:04. > :11:07.with his coaching team, they will look at the tape and just to see the
:11:08. > :11:11.difference of pace, where his depth has not been good enough today, has
:11:12. > :11:18.not been able to keep Cilic pushed back at all, he has allowed Cilic to
:11:19. > :11:22.dominate the vast majority of these rallies, has not hurt Cilic in any
:11:23. > :11:26.way, and this is a learning experience for him. Marin Cilic, he
:11:27. > :11:32.is so aggressive, right from the first point. His coach I'm sure will
:11:33. > :11:35.just about give him ten out of ten, the only thing would be his first
:11:36. > :11:45.serve percentage that he would like to bump up a bit but other than that
:11:46. > :11:52.he has been absolutely awesome. And again we have been talking about it
:11:53. > :11:55.a little bit in this match, Bjorkman there in the black baseball cap,
:11:56. > :11:59.disguised as a camera, but who will be the contenders for the men's
:12:00. > :12:03.singles at Wimbledon, and Marin Cilic has to be up there, the way
:12:04. > :12:10.the men's draw is, pretty open this year with the way things are going.
:12:11. > :12:16.You have to put him in the mix. Just over an hour on court, the sun
:12:17. > :12:17.disappears for a moment, Marin Cilic serving for a place in the
:12:18. > :13:32.quarterfinals. You are right in what you say, John,
:13:33. > :13:36.as well, not much time to talk about it now, but he is the most
:13:37. > :13:42.overlooked grand slam champion, his US open victory a few years ago now.
:13:43. > :14:10.There it is, Victor Riu, short, sharp, ruthless display from Marin
:14:11. > :14:16.Cilic. Seeing off one of the future stars, perhaps, of the game, but you
:14:17. > :14:19.see the contrast across the net, a T-shaped perhaps but a man against a
:14:20. > :14:25.boy today on Centre Court, Marin Cilic the former champion here -- a
:14:26. > :14:30.cliche perhaps. Every chance he will go on and win this title again,
:14:31. > :14:41.Marin Cilic safely through to the quarterfinals. Cilic and his coach
:14:42. > :14:43.will have seen that performance that Kozlov produced against Steve
:14:44. > :14:47.Johnson in coming through and there will have been no complacency, he
:14:48. > :14:52.was very quickly out of the box, Marin Cilic and Kozlov, from the
:14:53. > :14:59.start, looked a bit uneasy. Did get things together a little bit more in
:15:00. > :15:06.the second set but, again, for Kozlov it is a step forward, all
:15:07. > :15:13.part of the development, to win a match here or there at ten 80p level
:15:14. > :15:24.event lifts the rankings. -- at an ATP level event. But in the first of
:15:25. > :15:31.the matches on centre court today, it has been a victory for Marin
:15:32. > :15:39.Cilic and what a victory, through to play Donald Young in the
:15:40. > :15:44.quarterfinals. Twice a finalist here, he won in 2012 in the final
:15:45. > :15:49.against David Nalbandian when it all went wrong for the Argentinian and
:15:50. > :15:52.he was disqualified, then in 2013 lost to Andy Murray. Very good
:15:53. > :15:55.chance he will go all the way to the final again, looked very, very
:15:56. > :16:06.impressive today, Marin Cilic. Through to the last eight. A fairly
:16:07. > :16:10.one-sided victory. Just started to miss a couple of shops in the second
:16:11. > :16:20.set but his forehand so impressive throughout. His coach, a little
:16:21. > :16:29.clench of the post, job done for his man. As we have been talking about,
:16:30. > :16:33.he is the highest seed left in the draw, Marin Cilic, seed number four
:16:34. > :16:38.but Murray, Wawrinka, Routledge, those men above them have gone. I
:16:39. > :16:43.wave and a smile and he is safely through and ready to give his
:16:44. > :16:48.thoughts to John Inverdale. Congratulations, that was a ruthless
:16:49. > :16:52.display. Yes, I felt good from the start of the match, I was returning
:16:53. > :16:58.well, I was making the most of the balls that were coming, obviously
:16:59. > :17:03.serving well is the key on grass and I was doing that well today. Is the
:17:04. > :17:07.talk in the locker room when you get a tournament like this where the big
:17:08. > :17:12.names keep falling day after day, is that a topic of conversation and you
:17:13. > :17:16.think, it could be me today? Not really, it happens quite often,
:17:17. > :17:21.especially as we play so many tournaments, it is very rare that
:17:22. > :17:26.always the top seed are going through, so it is not easy,
:17:27. > :17:30.especially in a tournament like this with so many great players, great
:17:31. > :17:36.grasp players, and one of the first weeks on grass, it is always very
:17:37. > :17:43.tricky, so I am trying to always focus a lot on players like Kozlov
:17:44. > :17:49.today, a very tricky young player, nothing to lose when he comes out
:17:50. > :17:53.and you have to be ready. He is obviously one of the young up and
:17:54. > :17:57.coming stars of the game, 11 years ago you were in that situation. When
:17:58. > :18:01.you walked on court here to play your first ever match here against
:18:02. > :18:07.Tim Henman. That was ten years ago, I was feeling quite old when you
:18:08. > :18:11.said 11, but it was an amazing experience, I learned a lot at those
:18:12. > :18:19.matches when I was playing here, especially with Tim. It was just an
:18:20. > :18:25.amazing experience for me and it helped me a lot for the upcoming
:18:26. > :18:29.weeks and the rest of my career. You are being modest, because you beat
:18:30. > :18:33.him! Of course, I was playing very well but day, grass suits me well.
:18:34. > :18:38.We will see you in a couple of days' time.
:18:39. > :18:43.Thank you. Through to the quarterfinals, former champion Marin
:18:44. > :18:46.Cilic. Look who is here, we are delighted to welcome Dennis, great
:18:47. > :18:50.match last night which Andrew watched against Tomas Berdych, sadly
:18:51. > :18:55.you lost in three sets but you must have been proud of the way you
:18:56. > :18:59.played? Yes, incredible match, disappointing to lose but it was fun
:19:00. > :19:06.to be out there, the crowd was so loud, it was a really fun match, toe
:19:07. > :19:10.to toe up until the end. Tomas Berdych DECC is a great player and
:19:11. > :19:15.it is a privilege to be competing with these guys. You looked at home
:19:16. > :19:19.on the big stage there. When I played against Kyle I was not sure
:19:20. > :19:29.what to expect with the crowd but I got pretty comfortable and my next
:19:30. > :19:35.match with Tomas so I was pretty comfortable. You have got a big
:19:36. > :19:42.game, haven't you? Yes, I grew up playing like this, my mum taught me
:19:43. > :19:46.to play like this. For me, I always want to be the aggressor, no matter
:19:47. > :19:51.who I am playing against, and that is what I try to do against Tomas
:19:52. > :19:54.yesterday. Your mum says you have to keep attacking, you kept getting
:19:55. > :19:59.logged by older kids but she kept saying keep going! Yes, especially
:20:00. > :20:02.when you are pretty small still and everyone back then was just lobbying
:20:03. > :20:07.me but she told me to just keep going and one day I would grow and
:20:08. > :20:11.they would not be able to pass me any more so it is really credit to
:20:12. > :20:15.her. Have you always had that serve you have got? Where did you learn
:20:16. > :20:22.that? That first serve you hit four and eight nearly went over his head,
:20:23. > :20:25.95 mph! The kick serve, I really have to give credit to Marty, we
:20:26. > :20:29.worked on that during the clay season, it was one of the main
:20:30. > :20:35.things we focused on so I think the clay season helped me place by serve
:20:36. > :20:39.a lot better and other aspects of my game, but I have been really
:20:40. > :20:44.focusing on my serve my whole career. Being a lefty it is one of
:20:45. > :20:47.my main aspects. Great to have that kick out wide to the deuce court
:20:48. > :20:56.because it keeps people honest, they expected to slide down the middle.
:20:57. > :21:00.You are only young still. 18? I turned 18 a couple of months ago. I
:21:01. > :21:04.am still learning about my game, still learning what I can do, what I
:21:05. > :21:08.can't do, it is new experiences for me and every day I am learning a
:21:09. > :21:14.little bit more about myself. Are you enjoying life on the tour? So
:21:15. > :21:19.far it has been really great, a lot of fun, a tough job but it has got
:21:20. > :21:25.its positives and I am really excited to have a chance to play
:21:26. > :21:30.well in the main draw. Yes, the wild card announced yesterday, when did
:21:31. > :21:36.you hear about that? Two days ago I heard, my manager called me and told
:21:37. > :21:41.me. I was really pumped, I am super excited to be back. For me, the
:21:42. > :21:45.dream is to lift the men's Wimbledon trophy so to be back on those courts
:21:46. > :21:49.and having a chance to play there is a dream come true for me. You
:21:50. > :21:53.already have a Wimbledon trophy, we were so impressed with the last
:21:54. > :22:06.year, here you are winning the boys' singles title. It was zero that
:22:07. > :22:09.game, he hit a second serve, he had another second serve, I missed in
:22:10. > :22:15.the bottom of the net, I was praying to God that he would double-fault!
:22:16. > :22:22.Lovely celebrations at the end, then you go and get your trophy, don't
:22:23. > :22:26.you? Exactly. So nice, happy memories. You have grown a bit since
:22:27. > :22:31.then, you have put on a few muscles since then! I grew physically, I
:22:32. > :22:35.have got a lot stronger, that is one of the reasons I can compete with
:22:36. > :22:39.guys like Kyle and Tomas this year, I tried to focus on improving
:22:40. > :22:47.physically and it has really helped me. Who did you add my growing up,
:22:48. > :22:52.Roger Federer? For sure, yeah, I always wanted to play like him,
:22:53. > :22:58.being aggressive, and also off the court he was such a gentleman, I
:22:59. > :23:02.always wanted to be just like him on and off the court, being a really
:23:03. > :23:11.nice guy and being so classy. Have you played him? I have practised
:23:12. > :23:17.with him a couple of times. Wow. I want to play him but hopefully not
:23:18. > :23:24.at Wimbledon! Agreed, he is pretty good on grass! He has got a couple
:23:25. > :23:29.of titles! He brought you in because he wanted someone to throw some
:23:30. > :23:32.lefty serves at him? Yes, a couple of years ago he played Feliciano
:23:33. > :23:37.Lopez in the semifinals, I warned him up and he won the match that
:23:38. > :23:43.day, lost in the finals but I didn't warm him up that day so it was OK! I
:23:44. > :23:46.know what he was doing, he wanted to take a close look at this serve so
:23:47. > :23:50.that in a couple of years' time, he has seen a few juniors come through
:23:51. > :23:55.in his time! Going back to the Rogers cup in Canada, you got a wild
:23:56. > :24:01.card for that, Marty was telling me that you wanted it, did you request
:24:02. > :24:05.to play? Wild card at 17 years old, you wanted to play, no matter who
:24:06. > :24:09.you played, you wanted to play the night match? I live to play for
:24:10. > :24:12.these moments on the big stage in front of so many people, I love
:24:13. > :24:19.playing in front of people and showing them so I wanted the shot to
:24:20. > :24:27.play on Centre Court... Which you got. I played Nick Kyrgios, I got
:24:28. > :24:33.two matches on centre court and it was a great time for me. I really
:24:34. > :24:36.had fun. It is our whole learning experience, but do you enjoyed
:24:37. > :24:42.travelling as well? It is difficult changing hotels every week, changing
:24:43. > :24:46.countries all the time, but if I didn't enjoy it I wouldn't be able
:24:47. > :24:50.to do it, it is part of the lifestyle and you have to accept it,
:24:51. > :24:55.I like visiting new cities, new tournaments, it is always
:24:56. > :25:06.fascinating. It is lovely to see you here and playing so well, we see
:25:07. > :25:10.such huge future and it is lovely for us to see such a different side
:25:11. > :25:12.because the last time we saw you was the Davis Cup, such a horrific
:25:13. > :25:16.accident... Here is a happy reminder! We know it is over but
:25:17. > :25:21.that moment there, you knew you had made a mistake, what were your
:25:22. > :25:26.feelings? To be honest, I thought I was done with tennis for a while. It
:25:27. > :25:30.is so difficult to bounce back from a moment like this and I had a lot
:25:31. > :25:33.of people helping me out, helping me through this, it was not only tough
:25:34. > :25:39.on me but on my family, on anyone that was close to me, but I really
:25:40. > :25:43.had people helping me get through this and locally he was very good
:25:44. > :25:48.about it as well. Ten minutes after in the locker room he was kind of
:25:49. > :25:53.joking about it, so he was really good about it and ironically we
:25:54. > :25:57.actually kind of became friends from that.
:25:58. > :26:01.I have heard that, which is nice. We text each other so it has been
:26:02. > :26:05.pretty good. A life changing experience to have to go through
:26:06. > :26:10.that for someone so young. Of course, it really hit me because I
:26:11. > :26:14.was just coming from juniors, just starting pros so I had to mature a
:26:15. > :26:18.lot faster than necessary but to be honest I think it has kind of help
:26:19. > :26:23.to me, it has really helped me improve, I stay much calmer on court
:26:24. > :26:29.now and I just feel like a much more mature person on and off the court
:26:30. > :26:34.now. So are your family coming over, are they here? I hope so, they are
:26:35. > :26:38.not here yet, I hope my mum will come, she has her own little club
:26:39. > :26:47.and she is running a summer camp and struggling to find coaches to
:26:48. > :26:53.replace during Wimbledon. Where is that, Toronto? Yes, but hopefully we
:26:54. > :26:57.can find someone to replace her and she can come and watch me, because I
:26:58. > :27:02.know it is a dream for her to come and watch me. Absolutely, to see you
:27:03. > :27:06.walking out at Wimbledon, imagine how special that will be from when
:27:07. > :27:20.she started you at such a young age. What are your plans now? I am going
:27:21. > :27:26.to sign up for a wild card, I requested a wild card into
:27:27. > :27:31.qualifying but I'm not expecting anything, I have already been
:27:32. > :27:34.privileged to have got two wild cards so I'm not pushing my luck and
:27:35. > :27:44.I'm really thankful for those wild cards but it is quite a gap so it is
:27:45. > :27:48.good to play another event before the big show. Such a big sport and
:27:49. > :27:52.it demands are lot on these players and it is lovely, Dennis, that you
:27:53. > :27:56.called the club today to say, I want to repay you for my wild card, if
:27:57. > :28:00.you want me to do some media work and promote the tournament, so hats
:28:01. > :28:04.off to you for doing that. I like that very much, he is not the only
:28:05. > :28:11.Canadian kid we will have to get used to over the next few years
:28:12. > :28:24.because your friend... I want you to say it! Shapovalov! I have been
:28:25. > :28:30.commentating this week, I have even been asking in the players' tent...
:28:31. > :28:37.Ie even played the ATP pronunciation to him! What is the name of your
:28:38. > :29:00.friend? Felix. He is 16 years old. He will
:29:01. > :29:06.be incredible, he will win a slam or two in his day. Honestly, I know he
:29:07. > :29:11.is my best friend, but I have never seen someone as talented as him, it
:29:12. > :29:16.is unbelievable how professional he is, how hard he works, he will be a
:29:17. > :29:21.great player one day so look out for him. We will indeed, and we will
:29:22. > :29:23.certainly keep our eyes on you as well, congratulations for a great
:29:24. > :29:28.tournament and all the best for Eastbourne and Wimbledon. Thank you,
:29:29. > :29:32.I appreciate that. You have got some work now to get into the commentary
:29:33. > :29:37.box! We are now ready for our next match out on Centre Court, Jordan
:29:38. > :29:41.Thompson, conqueror of Andy Murray, against Sam Querrey, so Andrew will
:29:42. > :29:46.head his way, Peter Fleming is there. This is certainly a very
:29:47. > :29:54.different match for Jordan Thompson from Andy Murray to Sam Querrey?
:29:55. > :30:01.COMMENTATOR: It certainly is. Jordan Thompson, 23 years of age, will play
:30:02. > :30:07.Sam Querrey, who one year, in 2010, Querrey now very much a veteran, 29
:30:08. > :30:12.years old, he has had his ups and downs over the years but seems to be
:30:13. > :30:17.on an upward path right now. He has played some terrific matches, he
:30:18. > :30:26.beat Nadal in a memorable final. Querrey, obviously a daunting figure
:30:27. > :30:48.on grass, will start it off. Interesting, very first point,
:30:49. > :30:52.Querrey challenging Thompson, going out wide with a second serve. It
:30:53. > :31:22.didn't pay off that time, but maybe down the road.
:31:23. > :31:29.Really savvy point played by the American. Thompson showing us some
:31:30. > :31:31.of the court coverage ability that paid off so well for him against
:31:32. > :32:14.Murray. Oh, well left. Terrific return of
:32:15. > :32:20.serve. Thompson appears to be seeing the ball beautifully. Of course,
:32:21. > :32:23.Querrey with one of the more dominant service in the game. A
:32:24. > :32:50.couple of break points for the Australian to start.
:32:51. > :33:08.Hello, Peter. Young Mr Castle has joined us. It is windy out there.
:33:09. > :33:13.Nice plan B from Querrey. Of course, his serve and forehand combination
:33:14. > :33:17.is as devastating as just about any in the game, so for him to be able
:33:18. > :33:54.to back that up with a drop shot now and again, so effective.
:33:55. > :34:01.Forgive me if you have already given this, Peter, but just looking at Sam
:34:02. > :34:08.Querrey putts-mac form this year, 28 in the world now, but looking pretty
:34:09. > :34:17.good having one a tournament earlier in the year, beating Nick Kyrgios
:34:18. > :34:23.and Rafael Nadal, as Sam Querrey did to win in Acapulco. He had that
:34:24. > :34:28.victory against Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon last year and a title
:34:29. > :34:33.here, yet we don't talk about him that much. He's not one of the
:34:34. > :34:41.glamour figures. Gets the job done. He's such a low key figure, isn't
:34:42. > :34:49.he? But hugely impressed with Jordan Thompson, the way he plays the game,
:34:50. > :35:09.the way he hustles. He will make an opponent's life difficult.
:35:10. > :35:15.It will be interesting to see if Thompson can serve as well all be as
:35:16. > :35:20.effective on serve today as he was against Murray the other day whether
:35:21. > :35:36.perhaps that was just an off returning day for Andy. We will see.
:35:37. > :35:43.Yes, that's the big change in Sam Querrey. His backhand always was a
:35:44. > :35:47.run-of-the-mill shot, something he would do in between hitting
:35:48. > :35:50.forehands. But it has become a weapon now. He really hits the two
:35:51. > :36:10.hander well and confidently. You can hear the noise of the
:36:11. > :36:11.flagpole ropes, the wires. And it affected that, certainly it
:36:12. > :36:41.effective that ball toss. That's a perfect reaction. Wow. Very
:36:42. > :36:53.sharp angle. He's not the tallest man. He's no John Isner.
:36:54. > :37:40.That's a tough way to play, against Sam Querrey, if you are just going
:37:41. > :37:45.to bump the ball back and try to defend. You have got your work cut
:37:46. > :37:52.out for you. Jordan Thompson hasn't won a point when he has missed his
:37:53. > :38:02.first serve. Picking up on what Peter Fleming is saying.
:38:03. > :38:05.This is very unhelpful for Jordan Thompson as he attempts to stave off
:38:06. > :38:22.another break point. You could have been watching this
:38:23. > :38:29.man and Denis Shapovalov playing each other in Surbiton just a couple
:38:30. > :38:36.of weeks ago. A Challenger, that one by Jordan Thompson. He made the
:38:37. > :38:43.final and lost their two a Japanese player with real ability, Yuichi
:38:44. > :38:58.Sugita. Oh, boy, that was a chance. Querrey
:38:59. > :39:40.just a little bit slow getting out of the way of the body serve.
:39:41. > :39:52.He's a tough man to pass, he's an even tougher man to lob. The old
:39:53. > :39:59.skyhook there. I thought you would like that, this was the shot of the
:40:00. > :40:03.old Los Angeles Laker 's, wasn't it? Jimmy Connors was the first man to
:40:04. > :40:17.popularise that in tennis, wasn't he?
:40:18. > :40:54.Tough conditions. A lot more blustery than it has been all week.
:40:55. > :41:02.Too tough service games, one for each player in this second round
:41:03. > :41:08.match. We have had hole matches where we have seen less break point
:41:09. > :41:15.than that but five in total have come gone. This is quite an
:41:16. > :41:18.intriguing match, Jordan Thompson versus Sam Querrey, the former
:41:19. > :41:27.champion here. Jordan Thompson he defeated Andy Murray in round one.
:41:28. > :41:31.Oh, and he has used the wind beautifully there. Hitting against
:41:32. > :41:32.the wind. Can afford to give it a little extra height. The ball
:41:33. > :41:51.stopped dead once it got up there. And you know, Andrew, understandable
:41:52. > :41:54.for those at home to think, well, we have seen five break points in the
:41:55. > :41:58.first two games. This could be great, we will see lots of breaks.
:41:59. > :42:06.Often it doesn't work out that well. A player says a couple of break
:42:07. > :42:07.points and grows in confidence then doesn't face any for quite some
:42:08. > :42:46.time. Let's see how that pans out. I enjoyed your tat with Shapovalov.
:42:47. > :42:52.Did you actually asking, is that how you pronounce your name? It sounds
:42:53. > :42:58.counterintuitive. It was a test, it was like being on mastermind but
:42:59. > :43:01.rather than Humphreys, it was Sue Barker the inquisitorial. Apparently
:43:02. > :43:11.I got it right, Howard said Shapovalov. That surely must be
:43:12. > :43:15.Anglicised in some way. When you have got four syllables in your
:43:16. > :43:20.second name, I'm sure you can pull it to whichever way you want. Nice
:43:21. > :43:24.guy, appreciative of his success, humble about his chances going
:43:25. > :43:30.forward, but I think realistically, I think he thinks of himself about
:43:31. > :43:34.-- as a future grand slam champion. There wasn't a hint of arrogance
:43:35. > :43:39.about it, but that is what he's going for. I was very happy to hear
:43:40. > :43:44.him talk way. Absolutely. It sounds like he has got a solid head on his
:43:45. > :43:51.shoulders. And that other guy he was talking about, his great friend,
:43:52. > :43:56.speaking generously about Felix Auger-Aliassime. He is from what I
:43:57. > :44:05.hear 16 years of age, just one challenger, those two could be the
:44:06. > :44:17.basis for a couple of Davis cup team wins. Raonic will become the doubles
:44:18. > :44:22.specialist. Yes, alongside their colleague who is now in his 40s. He
:44:23. > :44:26.is still playing beautifully. It's amazing. I guess, well, he never had
:44:27. > :44:31.any muscles in the first place, so he had none Tim Louise! -- he had
:44:32. > :44:55.none to lose! You are horrible. Oh, that is so irritating for Jordan
:44:56. > :45:03.Thompson. Good work from Sam Querrey. It just caught the end of
:45:04. > :45:13.the bracket here. You just think to yourself, should have died. --
:45:14. > :45:40.should have dived. He's got a really good serve for
:45:41. > :45:46.grass. Very quick motion, difficult to read for the opponent. He has
:45:47. > :45:52.shown already that he has a great slice serve out to Querrey's
:45:53. > :45:57.forehand. Could definitely cover that one more on big points. Yes, I
:45:58. > :46:01.agree with that and he has got the kick to be able to back up this
:46:02. > :46:09.life, that when they're reaching the high backhand side. Yes, so the hope
:46:10. > :46:16.is that the ball toss is slightly different for those two Serbs. If it
:46:17. > :47:00.is the same, then you are up against it, trying to return.
:47:01. > :47:07.And that's what a guy like Sam Querrey does to opponents. Even if
:47:08. > :47:13.he's not that comfortable heating bodies, he forces you to thread the
:47:14. > :47:18.needle. -- not that comfortable heating follies. Thompson probably
:47:19. > :47:31.had a couple of inches either side of Querrey to hit the winner.
:47:32. > :48:13.Everything that could have gone against him in this game has done.
:48:14. > :48:20.That was not a great error, especially when you consider that
:48:21. > :48:21.that was break point. Querrey had to do better putting that ball into
:48:22. > :48:51.play. He's doing a nice job of wrong
:48:52. > :49:42.footing the Aussie. He's had five break points in his
:49:43. > :49:50.opening two service games, Jordan Thompson. Yes, that is out to, so
:49:51. > :50:20.five have come and gone. It does give you a feeling of
:50:21. > :50:23.insecurity, then you come through break points surviving,
:50:24. > :51:10.strengthening. Nice adjustment. No need to over
:51:11. > :51:20.swing on that one because that was great improvisation, racquet face
:51:21. > :51:26.control. Adjustment, split step, just to push through the wall. And
:51:27. > :51:49.another game survived. He's a character, isn't he? A
:51:50. > :52:28.typical Aussie. -- he's a combative character, isn't he?
:52:29. > :52:37.Did Sam Querrey go to southern California college? I don't think he
:52:38. > :52:50.went to college. Did he go straight pro? I think he did. He was a great
:52:51. > :52:55.junior. Cameron Norrie was the number one player in college tennis.
:52:56. > :53:17.I'm not sure if he won the NCA is, but he was certainly favourite.
:53:18. > :53:25.The wind is kind from that direction, Westerly, coming Heathrow
:53:26. > :53:31.and blowing towards central London, and as soon as it gets up there, it
:53:32. > :53:32.picked up the window the clubhouse. It just disappears, left to right as
:53:33. > :54:00.you are looking, down the court. American College still a really good
:54:01. > :54:04.professional for some -- a really good option for some people. If you
:54:05. > :54:10.are not sure if you are good enough to be professional or you're not
:54:11. > :54:16.sure it's for you, a wonderful education and team spirit. Even if
:54:17. > :54:19.you have no education interests, it's a stable environment to
:54:20. > :54:24.training for the next four years. The number of players who are
:54:25. > :54:29.physically or emotionally mature enough to go straight out onto the
:54:30. > :54:39.two, where you get your brains beaten every week, is probably less
:54:40. > :54:42.1% of the players who aspire to one day become professional. So to go
:54:43. > :54:45.into a situation where you have a couple of coaches who are looking
:54:46. > :54:53.after you constantly and working on your game, it is, as you say, a
:54:54. > :54:58.great opportunity. A young man who elected not to go that route and to
:54:59. > :55:06.turn professional is J Clark from Derbyshire, from the city of Derby.
:55:07. > :55:19.He is playing in a challenger in Ilkley this week. He got his first
:55:20. > :55:26.challenger when in Ilkley and is playing against an experienced
:55:27. > :55:30.Ukrainian player now. We will continue to monitor him, as Jade
:55:31. > :55:39.tries to progress. Marcis Willis is playing Sam Groth in the second
:55:40. > :55:40.round. That is after beating the Australian Matt Ebdon. That is all
:55:41. > :56:24.taking place in Ebdon -- in Ilkley. Various dies at the far end with the
:56:25. > :56:55.dark glasses. -- there is Des at the far end in the dark glasses.
:56:56. > :57:04.Wow, that was amazing. That was a virtuoso point. It was slow to get
:57:05. > :57:11.both -- slow to get going, but that volley from Querrey was amazing. And
:57:12. > :57:13.that one, wow. He did that against Murray, didn't he? He'd be a good
:57:14. > :57:38.squash player. I suspect he'd like a game of paddle
:57:39. > :57:40.tennis as well. Old-fashioned skills he is demonstrating here with his
:57:41. > :57:56.racket. Not that time. But a very clever
:57:57. > :58:04.shot from Querrey, forcing him to almost half volley. Check this out,
:58:05. > :58:10.average service game duration, Thomson, 6.5 minutes. Just under
:58:11. > :58:34.pressure. Sam Querrey quicker, but not that easy.
:58:35. > :58:58.Again, Thompson badly needs a first serve or two in here.
:58:59. > :59:05.Oh, Thompson got away with won, because he put that in the middle of
:59:06. > :59:11.the court would not much on it. That is his sick break points saved. Yes,
:59:12. > :59:16.Sam Querrey would very much like to have that shot again. I am not sure
:59:17. > :59:22.if he has a sliced backhand but moving through this with a slice, he
:59:23. > :59:24.couldn't handle. Perhaps the wind moved it, because it was a bit of a
:59:25. > :59:39.mis-hit from him. So important to keep your feet
:59:40. > :59:41.moving when you play in the wind. That is not necessarily one of
:59:42. > :00:01.Querrey's strong points. He is pesky. Yes, if they play this
:00:02. > :00:06.cat and mouse type points, Thompson is going to win the vast majority of
:00:07. > :00:09.them. He is good at this. He moves about three inches off the ground,
:00:10. > :00:33.doesn't he. He is living with the ball.
:00:34. > :00:50.And that was the easiest of his service games! Oh, no, it wasn't!
:00:51. > :01:01.One of the longer ones! Eight minutes 38 seconds. Just seemed
:01:02. > :01:14.really quick because it was so much fun! Good match, this, isn't it? It
:01:15. > :01:26.has come back in. Not quite sure how, but he has done it.
:01:27. > :01:57.He has got the odds on the run. He is just a flat-out good player, Sam
:01:58. > :02:02.Querrey. You have to think, what is it? That is keeping him from being
:02:03. > :02:48.one of the game's best. He has got a great arm. His father
:02:49. > :03:02.was drafted into the major-league baseball. Wonderful service motion
:03:03. > :03:08.so many Americans have. That is one of the huge advantages of playing
:03:09. > :03:15.baseball as a little kid, it is the exact same action used to serve.
:03:16. > :03:25.Virtually every American kid plays baseball. Or at least everyone that
:03:26. > :03:33.like sports. Which is getting less and less. Probably so, probably so.
:03:34. > :03:40.The computer generation we live in, the LTA gave a presentation, the
:03:41. > :03:47.performance director at the LTA earlier this week, it was
:03:48. > :03:50.interesting, across all sports youngsters are playing less, they
:03:51. > :03:59.are less active than they were, a ten year decline we have taken
:04:00. > :04:03.through, and particularly female participation, youngsters playing
:04:04. > :04:06.sport, is going down, even though it is in the national curriculum, so it
:04:07. > :04:14.is a big issue. The computer generation. The LTA, I think, have a
:04:15. > :04:17.participation announcement next week, which I'm quite looking
:04:18. > :04:24.forward to. They are very aware of the problem and doing their best to
:04:25. > :04:26.get tennis racket into the hands of youngsters. Plenty of good work
:04:27. > :04:48.being done there. With a sense of foreboding, Jordan
:04:49. > :04:52.Thompson comes to the line once again. He is under pressure every
:04:53. > :04:56.time he serves. Perhaps the new balls will help him. And perhaps
:04:57. > :05:00.being from that direction as a right-hander, the wind direction is
:05:01. > :05:03.taking it to a place that you actually want to hit it. Nice
:05:04. > :05:45.theory. Again, an opportunity for Querrey to
:05:46. > :05:46.just put a little pressure on Thompson. Second serve was there to
:05:47. > :06:32.be hit. That was a low percentage attempt.
:06:33. > :06:36.Querrey has to believe that the longer the rally goes on he will get
:06:37. > :06:41.a shot to hit that is in the middle of the court, chest high. That time
:06:42. > :06:44.he was a little off-balance, the ball was about knee height, not one
:06:45. > :07:00.that he really wanted to go for a winner on.
:07:01. > :07:08.That one was of the perfect variety, one that was in the middle of the
:07:09. > :07:50.court, time to hit it and really put Thompson under pressure.
:07:51. > :07:54.Thompson's second serve can be awkward because it seems to come in
:07:55. > :07:59.with more action than a lot of players. That one skidded in towards
:08:00. > :08:17.Querrey where the second serve often skip the other way.
:08:18. > :08:28.A quick victory for Marin Cilic on this court today against Stefan
:08:29. > :08:40.Kozlov. The American number two, Sam Querrey, in action here. Strange,
:08:41. > :08:46.really, to talk about the American number two is ranked 28th in the
:08:47. > :08:48.world. Back in the day the Americans had six, seven, eight players in the
:08:49. > :09:08.top ten. I was saying American number two on
:09:09. > :09:17.this court, but I'm just checking the rankings now to see. Number one
:09:18. > :09:36.American at the moment, Jack Sock, number 18.
:09:37. > :09:46.Isner at 21, Steve Johnson 25. So, American number four. Isner, Johnson
:09:47. > :09:50.and Querrey have been near each other for the last... Well, months,
:09:51. > :10:04.anyway. That is why coaches say, don't
:10:05. > :10:06.approach crosscourt, because Querrey just didn't have time to get across
:10:07. > :10:54.to cover the down the line pats. Had his 30-30 opportunity. Sam
:10:55. > :10:58.Querrey advancing to a 5-4 lead after 14 minutes here. Looking
:10:59. > :11:12.forward to seeing Benassi Kokkinakis coming up later on trying to back up
:11:13. > :11:16.his victory over Raonic. He plays Daniil Medvedev of Russia who, I
:11:17. > :11:21.have to confess, I haven't seen played too much. This is the next
:11:22. > :11:25.generation that they like to talk about, they like to build up the
:11:26. > :11:29.next generation in the PR and press send but until they get a result it
:11:30. > :11:42.doesn't matter what campaign of awareness you have. But they are
:11:43. > :11:45.getting results now. And a couple of guys who are not technically next
:11:46. > :11:54.generation, Dominic Thiem and Nick Kyrgios, both 22 now a few young
:11:55. > :12:01.guys making their way into the upper echelons of the game but still no
:12:02. > :12:08.one yet to challenge the big four, if you will. Just turned 23 this
:12:09. > :12:12.year. Lucas Pouille is another one if we are going to get to 23.
:12:13. > :13:59.Looking forward to seeing him play at Wimbledon.
:14:00. > :14:08.So, the pressure squarely on the Aussie's shoulders right now. Two
:14:09. > :14:44.points away from dropping the first set.
:14:45. > :14:52.This will be so frustrating for Sam. Querrey has had so many
:14:53. > :15:01.opportunities, break points, in this set, six. Getting into these rallies
:15:02. > :15:02.and losing them, he will get a little hot between the ears. He is
:15:03. > :15:27.not one to panic on the court. It can become fatiguing, mentally,
:15:28. > :15:31.to have all these break points, frustrating, anyway, to have as many
:15:32. > :15:37.chances as Querrey has and failed to convert them. The good news is his
:15:38. > :16:02.serve has settled down. He is a real defender, Jordan
:16:03. > :16:49.Thompson. His lateral movement is excellent.
:16:50. > :18:13.A lot of firepower in this guy's arsenal.
:18:14. > :18:22.So, Kokkinakis versus Medvedev is our next offering, the third match
:18:23. > :18:24.on Centre Court. Jeremy Chardy, the qualifier, versus Feliciano Lopez,
:18:25. > :18:32.who beat Stan Wawrinka in the first round, that will be number four
:18:33. > :18:38.today but we might be on the red button for that one, all part of it.
:18:39. > :18:44.Two big servers for that, two guys who can power down the first
:18:45. > :18:48.delivery. This has become a tremendous event, hasn't it? It is
:18:49. > :18:56.not just a tennis tournament, they must be congratulated on being the
:18:57. > :19:02.ATP Tour 500 tournament of the year I believe for the fourth year in a
:19:03. > :19:08.row. The players' loud cheer is spectacular, takes up the space of
:19:09. > :19:09.two indoor courts. And Jones up there and John Barrett on the left,
:19:10. > :19:24.Angela Barrett as well. Cannot see what it in John's had
:19:25. > :19:32.there, must be a glass of champagne. Roger Taylor on the left-hand side,
:19:33. > :19:39.Paul Hutchins and Mark Cox. British royalty, isn't it?! Tennis royalty,
:19:40. > :19:43.anyway. And Jones and Angela Mortimer, of course, former
:19:44. > :19:47.Wimbledon champions. The All-England Club has a closed championship de
:19:48. > :19:51.Gea and everybody plays, it is great fun, and I saw a mixed doubles
:19:52. > :19:56.match, Roger playing against Mark Cox in the mixed doubles and they
:19:57. > :20:00.were chatting away, it was wonderful to see. I will not tell you who won,
:20:01. > :20:17.because it really does not matter. And I can't remember.
:20:18. > :20:33.Oh! How did he get away with that?! Thompson had... This is an easy put
:20:34. > :20:36.away that he just sort of dumped back at Querrey, and then won it the
:20:37. > :21:33.hard way. James Keeler performed in the chair
:21:34. > :22:16.like a great conductor before his audience.
:22:17. > :22:28.Right on the edge of the line! It looked like it was going out, it had
:22:29. > :22:34.so much side has been on it. And after it hit, took a dead left turn.
:22:35. > :22:53.Couldn't believe it, managed to get to a tie-break, almost.
:22:54. > :23:00.And it is a tie-break. Excellent set of tennis, 52 minutes played and it
:23:01. > :23:08.will be decided with a break-in. The crowd have enjoyed the tennis. Kind
:23:09. > :23:14.of a classic match, power play, Sam Querrey and the grafter, the
:23:15. > :23:33.grinder, Jordan Thompson, who has chased down so many balls already.
:23:34. > :23:39.UMPIRE: Mr Thompson is challenging a call on the service line. The ball
:23:40. > :23:49.was called in. It was a challenge, he still has four. The call stands.
:23:50. > :25:13.Mr Thompson has three challenges remaining.
:25:14. > :25:21.It has certainly appeared that Jordan Thompson has done most of the
:25:22. > :25:30.running and yet, look, only ten metres between them. Jordan Thompson
:25:31. > :25:53.seems to have been rushed more than Querrey.
:25:54. > :25:58.Well, that was a PowerPoint from Sam Querrey, chipped backhand and then
:25:59. > :26:32.the mistake -- poor point. Again, it is not easy out there. The
:26:33. > :26:34.wind is pretty blustery. You think you are in position to hit the ball,
:26:35. > :27:25.and then it moves. Haven't had any rain here today,
:27:26. > :27:32.there was always that possibility. It has been clouding over a little
:27:33. > :27:39.bit in the last hour or so. The wind picked up about an hour ago as well
:27:40. > :27:41.as this cold front has come through, mercifully. The first three days
:27:42. > :28:13.were boiling hot, much cooler today. Still tops 4% chance of rain or so
:28:14. > :28:14.so I think we are pretty safe in that regard. A lot more comfortable,
:28:15. > :28:35.23 degrees. Oh, of all the balls to miss! The
:28:36. > :28:39.lob was good and we remember the success he had in that direction
:28:40. > :28:50.with a lob early on but Querrey with enough know-how to get the job done.
:28:51. > :28:57.That will ease the tension. Seven aces for Sam Querrey and now a 6-3
:28:58. > :29:56.lead, three set points. Just under an hour of fascinating
:29:57. > :30:01.tennis in this second round match here at Queen's Club, Sam Querrey
:30:02. > :30:03.had the most break points, existing -- exerting the most pressure and it
:30:04. > :30:14.paid off in the end, 7-6. Thompson trying everything that Sam
:30:15. > :30:18.Querrey just too tough in that first set tie-break. We will be back with
:30:19. > :30:23.that match in a moment, but next on court, another Aussie out on Centre
:30:24. > :30:26.Court, Thanasi Kokkinakis, who put out Milos Raonic and he let out a
:30:27. > :30:30.massive roar when he won the match point because it meant so much to
:30:31. > :30:34.him to have a big win on the big stage after a torrid time with a
:30:35. > :30:38.spate of injuries. He has been off the tiller for 18 months but at the
:30:39. > :30:44.moment he is fit, well and playing super tennis. He is up against
:30:45. > :30:53.another next-generation player, Dana Medvedev, sixth at six, and they are
:30:54. > :30:58.playing in a special event just before the O2 at the end of this
:30:59. > :31:03.year in Milan. They will be a lot of rule changes, a lot of loud music, a
:31:04. > :31:09.very different style of tennis later this year in Milan. They are next on
:31:10. > :31:13.court, the 221-year-olds, we are looking forward to that, to seeing
:31:14. > :31:21.the new stars emerging, and then to be over 30s. Chardy against
:31:22. > :31:22.Feliciano Lopez. They meant just -- they met just last week in
:31:23. > :31:45.Stuttgart, with Lopez winning. Jordan Thompson as pesky as ever.
:31:46. > :31:52.Nearly, very nearly, but Sam Querrey, but ultimately you would
:31:53. > :32:04.have to say that Sam Querrey just a bit more game in the first set
:32:05. > :32:08.there. I must apologise to Sue Barker. I was just tucking into a
:32:09. > :32:17.lemon thyme and garlic chicken ciabatta, so you caught me unawares.
:32:18. > :32:24.What we have here is a lot less blue sky than we had earlier in the week.
:32:25. > :32:28.Windy conditions. People who had tickets for today would have been
:32:29. > :32:33.expecting bigger star names, but it is interesting to watch this group
:32:34. > :32:41.of youngsters play. We can add Bernard Tomic to that. He is about
:32:42. > :32:50.43 in the world at the moment. Kyle Edmund as well.
:32:51. > :32:54.The real thrill is to see if any of those guys are potential world
:32:55. > :33:40.number ones. The chances are, these next James
:33:41. > :33:46.Guy 's will outlast him. -- this next generation guys. That is what
:33:47. > :33:51.happens when you go out wide. The court is still greenish and here you
:33:52. > :34:11.can see Thompson just losing his footing.
:34:12. > :34:20.OK, so Sam Querrey continuing to exert this pressure here. And with
:34:21. > :34:22.the momentum from the first set tie-break win, there is a 15-30
:34:23. > :34:41.opportunity. Oh, he has played him back in again,
:34:42. > :34:44.just like you did with that volley. He fed the Querrey backhand and
:34:45. > :34:49.there's passing shot brings up to back points. Yes, and again, it
:34:50. > :34:55.looked as though the wind caught him out. He didn't quite adjust well
:34:56. > :35:20.enough and that perhaps was the only shot he could play.
:35:21. > :35:25.Well, we haven't seen him unleash on ground strokes too often today. That
:35:26. > :36:16.one certainly shows he can. Wow, he used the wind to perfection.
:36:17. > :37:04.Look where that ball bounced. CHEERING
:37:05. > :37:21.APPLAUSE So, to more break points saved.
:37:22. > :37:30.Sam Querrey has had eight break points that he has failed to
:37:31. > :37:33.convert. Jordan Thompson just had those two. At least he is set up
:37:34. > :37:41.otherwise he would be very frustrated. Yes, and because it has
:37:42. > :37:44.been such smooth sailing on Querrey's sir, I think he will be
:37:45. > :37:50.enjoying his position right now, knowing that, come on, keep the
:37:51. > :38:16.pressure on. You are bound to break through on one of these chances.
:38:17. > :38:19.Well, the drop shot was an ambitious attempt. He didn't quite pull it
:38:20. > :40:44.off. Interesting. The hit and charge
:40:45. > :41:20.employee from Querrey appeared to catch Thompson unawares.
:41:21. > :41:29.Well, problems here again. Just game after game after game on serve for
:41:30. > :42:16.Jordan Thompson. How will he fight his way out of this one.
:42:17. > :42:20.As he has done so often this week, a couple of first serves bailing
:42:21. > :43:17.Thompson out of trouble. Once again, he gets out of a
:43:18. > :43:28.difficult situation. Houdini. Great stuff. Well done, keeping the second
:43:29. > :43:35.set close. Nice and full here today. I've been up on the balcony. Some of
:43:36. > :43:38.the great former champions up there, dignitaries as well. It's sort of
:43:39. > :43:45.the main function room just behind them there. There's Angela Barrett,
:43:46. > :43:55.Angela Mortimer in the middleware. Stop yawning, John. Angela was the
:43:56. > :44:01.Wimbledon champion three times. And Jones, the 1969 Wimbledon champion
:44:02. > :44:08.as well. And Maria Bueno is there who won 71 singles titles. There is
:44:09. > :44:18.Mark Cox. Who else have we got? Ah, Roger. Mark still crunches his
:44:19. > :44:24.forehand, you know? He is keen. He plays tennis the whole time. He
:44:25. > :44:34.hasn't missed a backhand slice since 1975. With his wife, Sue. And
:44:35. > :44:41.whereas shall we go? Let's get into people's business around here. It's
:44:42. > :44:47.nice looking around the crowd. A great buzz here. Very, very active
:44:48. > :44:54.membership. Some years ago, they celebrated, was that their centenary
:44:55. > :44:58.or that at 70 bed? This club has been a multipurpose sports club for
:44:59. > :45:05.over a century. They used to hold England football multinationals and
:45:06. > :45:09.-- International and rugby internationals here as well.
:45:10. > :45:12.Athletics moved to white city. It was probably one of the first in the
:45:13. > :45:38.world. That's interesting, Jordan Thompson,
:45:39. > :45:46.the old-fashioned chip charge. What you did you play here first? 1976. I
:45:47. > :45:52.think I lost here in the qualifications -- in the qualifiers.
:45:53. > :46:14.77, I think, was my first time in the main draw.
:46:15. > :46:25.You must have won the doubles here? Never. It just never quite suited
:46:26. > :46:26.me. The court was faster, a faster grass court which I didn't like so
:46:27. > :46:58.much. Again, the approach shot, just too
:46:59. > :47:03.short. It's the single biggest change in the game, isn't it, the
:47:04. > :47:09.ability of these guys to pass? Yes, brought on by the strings, the new
:47:10. > :47:17.generation of strings that are used now. It allows players to hit the
:47:18. > :47:20.ball with a lot more spin, and so therefore they get a lot more power
:47:21. > :47:26.on the passing shots. Power with control. Two break points, Jordan
:47:27. > :47:55.Thompson. It's been awhile. Drifted wide. The crowd have loved
:47:56. > :48:00.to the effort and the way he plays. And the fact that if it wasn't for
:48:01. > :48:03.him, they would be watching Andy Murray play doesn't bother them.
:48:04. > :48:08.They are enjoying a good match. It's as well as it has been all week in
:48:09. > :48:15.here. There must be 8000 people in this arena. No, 9000... Oh, you'd
:48:16. > :48:22.think it is not entirely full? Not totally. I think probably 9000.
:48:23. > :48:48.9542, the capacity now. Just waiting for the ball to come
:48:49. > :49:14.back to him and that time it never did.
:49:15. > :49:29.Oh, Justin. -- oh, just in. How did he get away with that? He was
:49:30. > :49:32.looking at this one in the air after he played the drop shot. Sam could
:49:33. > :49:35.have gone down the line but he didn't. This one here, just, please
:49:36. > :50:29.land. Just starting to fray at the edges a
:50:30. > :51:30.little, isn't he, Querrey? And that's way and he is up a break
:51:31. > :51:38.of serve, 4-1 up in this second Set. We might be going the distance here.
:51:39. > :51:46.Well, this matches the second on Central Court today, and in the
:51:47. > :51:53.first, Marin Cilic went through in straight sets. Marin Cilic three to
:51:54. > :51:58.face Donald Young and it's quite interesting that both Stephan and
:51:59. > :52:09.Donald Young promised so much in the junior ranks, based such successful
:52:10. > :52:16.junior careers, hoping things will happen for young Stefan Kozlov. You
:52:17. > :52:21.feel like the likes of Zverev and Shapovalov really are making their
:52:22. > :52:28.mark on the men's game. We would like to hear your comments on any of
:52:29. > :52:36.the youngsters, any of the next generation who are coming through.
:52:37. > :52:45.Soup, thank you -- so, thank you very much indeed. My sandwiches and
:52:46. > :52:51.getting in the way this time. Incidentally, from Ilkley, J Clarke
:52:52. > :52:55.from Derby picked up his first challenge match when just a couple
:52:56. > :53:00.of days ago and in the second round, won the first set against Ilia
:53:01. > :53:05.Marchenko, a Ukrainian Davis cup player. Marchenko is up a break of
:53:06. > :53:19.serve in the second set. Ilkley, that must take you back?
:53:20. > :53:25.Loved it. Beautiful, beautiful part of the world. It's been awhile but
:53:26. > :53:34.isn't it was on the circuit, you will? Yes. There was one year, a lot
:53:35. > :53:37.of the players camp because it is in the bow of the river there, and a
:53:38. > :53:42.lot of the players were camping and it flooded. I had great sympathy for
:53:43. > :54:26.them from my hotel room. We should also mention the
:54:27. > :54:29.tournament taking place in Birmingham, the Edgbaston Priory
:54:30. > :55:05.event. A match under way at the moment in
:55:06. > :55:10.Birmingham if you want to have a look at that. Petra Kvitova coming
:55:11. > :56:12.back is the story of the week. Yes, so nice to have her back on tour.
:56:13. > :56:25.Starting to make just a view to many errors now, is Sam Querrey. --
:56:26. > :57:32.starting to make just a few too many errors now, is Sam Querrey.
:57:33. > :57:41.Two weeks away, well, less than that now, from the championships that
:57:42. > :57:45.Wimbledon. Novak Djokovic each said that he would very much like to
:57:46. > :57:51.accept a wild card down in Eastbourne. Didn't think that was
:57:52. > :58:01.likely to happen. Not at all. It's a big surprise for me. I don't know,
:58:02. > :58:05.how much does he have to gain from that? But obviously he wants to play
:58:06. > :58:13.matches on grass and I guess ree accustom himself to what it is to
:58:14. > :58:17.think properly on a grass court. Or maybe he just wants to go to
:58:18. > :58:21.Eastbourne, the sun trap of the South. It's lovely. From there, you
:58:22. > :58:27.can reach the Southdown 's, lovely pubs, go for a walk along Beachy
:58:28. > :58:33.head and see the lighthouse. It's glorious down there. Perhaps that is
:58:34. > :58:37.why he is going. And the peer is always worth a look. Used to play
:58:38. > :58:43.the national Junior Championships on the grass court that Eastbourne.
:58:44. > :58:47.Just loved it down there. And what do you think the chances are that in
:58:48. > :58:52.one up his matches, he will be playing through a stiff gale force
:58:53. > :58:58.wind? There is always that at Eastbourne. I haven't seen the
:58:59. > :59:03.forecast for next week. But certainly there is always a fair
:59:04. > :59:09.breeze down there and always you play with the backdrop of the sound
:59:10. > :59:15.of seagulls, which are the sound of dogs -- the size of dogs down there.
:59:16. > :59:16.Never, ever walk with a packet of chips along Eastbourne Pier. They
:59:17. > :00:23.will get you. Thompson has done that a view times
:00:24. > :00:28.today, where he has hit the setup pass very low, forcing Querrey to
:00:29. > :00:32.volley up and then tracks the one falling down. A really nice job.
:00:33. > :01:23.That's not an easy shot for Querrey to have to deal with.
:01:24. > :02:01.I saw him down there, hat and glasses.
:02:02. > :02:28.He did well to step up to the ball this time. Didn't allow Thompson to
:02:29. > :03:48.establish himself at the net. PETER FLEMING: Querrey gets him self
:03:49. > :04:22.into trouble sometimes going down the line, when he's forced to run.
:04:23. > :04:35.Oh, wow! That did catch the line, didn't it? Looks that way. He's got
:04:36. > :04:54.excellent footwork, you see that adjustment?
:04:55. > :05:00.The kick serve should have been enough, to set up the forehand.
:05:01. > :05:06.Yeah, and you think perhaps a short angle or a drop shot back behind
:05:07. > :05:46.Querrey is going to win the point easily. But hindsight, always 2020.
:05:47. > :06:02.He is a throwback of a player, the ability to control the ball and use
:06:03. > :06:33.the racquet head, he has all that. He moves well.
:06:34. > :06:47.And upset. Just the one break of serve. Into the third set we go.
:06:48. > :06:51.SUE BARKER: Yes, this one going the distance, and we will be right back
:06:52. > :06:56.with it, but our summer of tennis continues here at Queen's Club.
:06:57. > :07:02.Tomorrow, we will be on at one o'clock, and we go right through
:07:03. > :07:06.until Sunday. And then we will be in his own from Monday, our coverage
:07:07. > :07:13.starting at two o'clock on Monday. Eight of the world's top ten in
:07:14. > :07:18.action, including Simona Halep and Jo Konta. Also next week, the
:07:19. > :07:25.nerve-racking qualifying for Wimbledon, that will be on the red
:07:26. > :07:27.button. And also online. And of course, all building up to the big
:07:28. > :07:42.one, Wimbledon. And we will have a special
:07:43. > :07:45.documentary to look back at some of the great moments over the years. I
:07:46. > :07:50.have been travelling around for that to interview some of the great
:07:51. > :07:54.champions. Billie Jean King, Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, through to the
:07:55. > :08:04.present day with Andy and Roger. And that will be shown on BBC One, on
:08:05. > :08:08.Sunday. ANDREW CASTLE: So, two interested
:08:09. > :08:28.spectators, David Beckham and his son, 14-year-old
:08:29. > :08:42.Romeo. He's a very keen tennis player, isn't he? So they say!
:08:43. > :08:52.Big hum around this now 9500 seat Centre Court at Queen's Club. And
:08:53. > :08:54.I'm not sure if any tickets have gone on sold so far this week. It
:08:55. > :09:11.has looked packed everyday. It is all very well seeing the big
:09:12. > :09:16.stars of the gameplaying, but if they win three and one, so what?
:09:17. > :09:19.Personally, I would rather see a good, tight match, and that is what
:09:20. > :09:41.this is. STEVE HARMISON: He tries to keep it
:09:42. > :09:53.low so it wasn't in Sam Querrey's hitting zone. Just got it too fine.
:09:54. > :10:15.-- PETER FLEMING. CONNACHT WAY TO START, ADVANTAGE TO
:10:16. > :10:18.SERVE FIRST, FOR MOST PEOPLE. And mentally, Sam Querrey went away a
:10:19. > :10:22.little bit in the second set, but having dropped his serve early on,
:10:23. > :10:27.it is almost as though he was allowed to relax a little bit
:10:28. > :10:29.towards the end of that second set. And now, he's ready once again for a
:10:30. > :14:12.strong assault. It's a ninth break point after this
:14:13. > :14:25.forehand error. He has had some chances - will he take this one?
:14:26. > :14:47.Oh, he HAS got it! That ball just took off! Just an inspirational
:14:48. > :14:51.little bunt return down the line, 132mph first serve, and he got it
:14:52. > :15:00.back. You get an automatic warning for
:15:01. > :15:59.that. And suddenly, 0-30. Yeah, Sam
:16:00. > :16:39.Querrey just bunting that back very short in the court.
:16:40. > :16:56.He knocked Querrey back with the depth of the return. Now, two break
:16:57. > :17:20.points for him. And Sam Querrey is absolutely livid
:17:21. > :17:23.with the game that he played there. He will have been so disappointed
:17:24. > :17:28.with those couple of loose points, especially having just got the break
:17:29. > :17:41.of serve. Jordan Thompson, back in it. Old habits die hard. On that
:17:42. > :17:46.last point, Querrey we had a real good opportunity to take that ball
:17:47. > :17:50.out of the air, when Thompson was still trying to get back into
:17:51. > :17:55.position. But of course, Querrey allowed it to drop and gave Thompson
:17:56. > :18:03.chance to recover his position, and he was able to track down the
:18:04. > :18:09.forehand. His movement is such a major strength, isn't it? It is, he
:18:10. > :18:17.moves very well. Very good balance. He's quick, he anticipates well. And
:18:18. > :18:22.it is his ninth match on grass, Australians don't grow up on grass
:18:23. > :18:28.like they used to tickle he just seems very well-suited to. He played
:18:29. > :18:32.in the, Challenger, he played in the qualifiers here and lost in the
:18:33. > :18:39.final round, that would have been his second match. So, five in
:18:40. > :18:45.Surbiton, two in the qualifying, lost one, got in as a lucky loser,
:18:46. > :18:49.beat Andy Murray, so this is number nine. And he's in the main draw at
:18:50. > :18:55.Wimbledon. It's a big advantage to have played a week or two on this
:18:56. > :19:01.surface, if you're playing against a guy who is playing his first or
:19:02. > :20:16.second match on it. With new tennis balls, Jordan Thompson to serve.
:20:17. > :20:25.That was the shot that you noticed was Querrey's most improved right at
:20:26. > :20:32.the start. We haven't actually seen him using it to great effect today.
:20:33. > :20:46.He has hit a couple of good winners, but...
:20:47. > :21:00.Well worth a challenge buckle UMPIRE: The ball was called out. Is
:21:01. > :21:20.outside edge. If ever you need an illustration of
:21:21. > :21:55.the value of Hawk-Eye, that was absolutely crucial.
:21:56. > :22:50.He's entertaining to watch, he tracks down a lot of balls.
:22:51. > :22:59.Oh, Sam went over awkwardly, as did Kyrgios the other day, when he had
:23:00. > :23:09.to pull out. This was another example of the split step and push.
:23:10. > :23:16.Luckily for up Querrey, he landed more on his knee double the inside
:23:17. > :23:21.of his leg. That was what did Kyrgios in. Three breaks of serve in
:23:22. > :23:52.the first four game of this decider. Not sure he needed to play that.
:23:53. > :24:15.Perhaps he did. Yeah, it was going to be very close, wasn't it?
:24:16. > :25:00.This is one of the things which is going to go in the NextGen finals -
:25:01. > :26:20.there will be no nets. Two mis-hit shots in a row from
:26:21. > :26:41.Thompson, the first one somehow luckily made it in - not the second.
:26:42. > :26:53.From 0-40 back to deuce. Yeah, good tactic. It wasn't the most
:26:54. > :27:00.convincing first volley, but he got away with it.
:27:01. > :27:10.UMPIRE: Advantage, Querrey. ANDREW CASTLE: 14 of those, the
:27:11. > :27:27.first one in this deciding set. And that is a big game and a a cold,
:27:28. > :27:33.from 0-40 down to back up the break of serve. Now, Jordan Thompson, we
:27:34. > :27:38.know he's got the heart, but he's going to need it now. This would be
:27:39. > :27:44.a massive disappointment for him, having beaten Andy Murray in the
:27:45. > :28:00.first round, Andy does not lose on grass too much! But surely a
:28:01. > :28:04.different set of circumstances. The 2010 champion now has the chance to
:28:05. > :28:11.polish the game off, and you would expect him to go on from here.
:28:12. > :28:17.Absolutely. Querrey certainly has the game to finish things off here,
:28:18. > :28:33.but stranger things have happened. He beat Mardy Fish back in 2010 in
:28:34. > :28:37.the final. The average length of a professional tennis career, how long
:28:38. > :28:42.do you think that is? Well, it depends at what level. For a top-10
:28:43. > :28:50.player, he's there for 12 years or so. But if it is a top 100 player,
:28:51. > :28:58.it might be only three. What is it? Well, across the whole piece, it is
:28:59. > :29:01.one year. People have a go, have a look and realise that it's going to
:29:02. > :29:27.be impossible, or not available. It would be a more interesting stat
:29:28. > :29:33.if you said, any player that for one week was in the top 100, how long
:29:34. > :29:45.was their average career? I agree. looking at his phone thinking, how
:29:46. > :29:56.am I going to work that out? I would have thought it is probably two or
:29:57. > :30:02.three years on average. Now, this should be taken from the air. It
:30:03. > :30:26.won't be an easy catch. One hand, one bounce. Nicely done.
:30:27. > :30:41.Just sign is that it might be going away from Jordan Thompson at this
:30:42. > :30:55.point. So how much game does he have left in the tank here?
:30:56. > :30:59.It hit the net cord and with the natural spin, it looked like it had
:31:00. > :31:20.taken it wide. Second service. That was a good serve, right into
:31:21. > :31:24.the body. Nothing Querrey could do with it really, other than send it
:31:25. > :32:05.back. He ended it almost exactly in the
:32:06. > :32:40.corner. Given himself a lifeline. 15-30
:32:41. > :32:45.down, that shot that Peter Fleming was talking about. Nice way to
:32:46. > :32:47.finish the game. Not too many slicing shots on the ATP tour these
:32:48. > :33:18.days. He's not going to get many
:33:19. > :33:52.opportunities as it is. He can't afford to give any of them away.
:33:53. > :33:59.He's allowed to chase this ball if it does come back over the net. He
:34:00. > :35:11.certainly allowed to follow through over the net.
:35:12. > :35:21.Top tournament, Queen's Club. It's lost a lot of big names, Jo Wilfred
:35:22. > :35:26.Tsonga going out to Gilles Muller. Gilles Muller will play the winner
:35:27. > :35:33.of this. Queen's has probably led the way under their tournament
:35:34. > :35:37.directors on the tour, they even have a concierge for the players.
:35:38. > :35:41.Anything the players want, even a restaurant reservation or they want
:35:42. > :35:45.to see a West End show, he would organise that for them and make all
:35:46. > :35:51.those reservations. It sounds like a great life. It's not like this every
:35:52. > :35:55.week. This really does lead the way. There's a nice laundry service down
:35:56. > :36:02.there as well, so you can say, there you go. I mean, how nice is that?!
:36:03. > :36:08.To be honest, it's not as if I do the washing at home either. I'm
:36:09. > :36:12.lucky. It's not like stopping off at the launderette next Barons Court
:36:13. > :36:20.station like we used to do. Asking for a bundle wash. I did that once
:36:21. > :36:27.in New York and got stung the $250. They did each room and item at a
:36:28. > :36:31.time and then put it on the room bill. Travelling on the circuit. He
:36:32. > :37:05.wouldn't miss it. Not most of the time.
:37:06. > :37:15.People still so enjoy these exchanges. They become rare. They
:37:16. > :37:18.have certainly become rarer on this surface. Clay, we might see it a
:37:19. > :38:07.little more often. I don't believe it. He has done it
:38:08. > :38:09.again. He did this against Murray as well. Just cushioning the half
:38:10. > :38:40.volley. Yes, lovely. It looks like Jordan Thompson is
:38:41. > :38:49.going to have one last throw of the dice.
:38:50. > :39:06.Yes, indeed. Sam Querrey will serve for it. It doesn't matter who you
:39:07. > :39:12.are or whether you won the tournament seven years ago like Sam
:39:13. > :39:16.Querrey did, the sort of tension in this game, the first couple of
:39:17. > :39:30.points, so crucial. If he can get his nose ahead...
:39:31. > :39:46.Querrey did well with this. Got the ball back to a length. He really
:39:47. > :40:20.did. Nothing he could do about that. Oh, he took that ball on, Querrey.
:40:21. > :40:34.He deserves credit. I'm delighted to report that Jay clerk from Ilkley --
:40:35. > :40:37.from Derby has won his first challenger match in Ilkley, beating
:40:38. > :41:00.Marchenko. Well done. Oh, he had a text Mac oh, boy! That
:41:01. > :41:06.volley from Sam was pushed. Yes, pushed at best. What a chance for
:41:07. > :41:31.Jordan Thompson. Two hours and ten minutes. A really
:41:32. > :41:36.good match. Is it coming to a close? Yes, it is. Jordan Thompson has been
:41:37. > :41:41.spectacular in this tournament, a huge contribution, but it is Sam
:41:42. > :41:45.Querrey new advances after two hours and 11 minutes. Really, a
:41:46. > :41:51.first-class match. The former champion here in front of a full
:41:52. > :41:57.house. Yes, a good performance from Sam Querrey. Had a bit of a blip in
:41:58. > :42:02.the middle of the second set, but all in all, powerful serving, strong
:42:03. > :42:05.grand stroking, while Jordan Thompson gave it his all. Just
:42:06. > :42:21.didn't quite have enough ammunition today. It was that hold when he was
:42:22. > :42:23.3-1 up from 15-30. Good effort. Jordan Thompson, massive
:42:24. > :42:28.contribution to the event. Getting in as a lucky loser, having lost in
:42:29. > :42:33.qualifying, when someone pulled out, he got into the main draw to play
:42:34. > :42:41.Andy Murray and not for a moment was and imitated. -- was he intimidated.
:42:42. > :42:45.He played superbly to beat the two-time champion here. He went
:42:46. > :42:51.three to this match against Sam Querrey but not to be this time. Sam
:42:52. > :43:00.Querrey will play Gilles Muller in the next round. Next for us,
:43:01. > :43:08.Medvedev and then closing the day with Jeremy Chardy and Feliciano
:43:09. > :43:17.Lopez. He is the man who beat Jordan Thompson qualifying. This is how Sam
:43:18. > :43:22.the man got the job done. Striking the ball cleanly on the forehand as
:43:23. > :43:27.ever, and good on the back can do. He is talking to John in that. Many
:43:28. > :43:31.congratulations. How would you assess that performance? That was a
:43:32. > :43:35.long match for grass and it is tricky out here. It is windy and
:43:36. > :43:40.that makes things so much more difficult and Jordan is tough. He is
:43:41. > :43:43.playing well, coming off that win against Andy he is confident and I'm
:43:44. > :43:51.happy to get through it. However where are you in big moments,
:43:52. > :43:56.getting yourself out of it when you were 0- 40 down, do you think then,
:43:57. > :44:03.that is me now. I have got the momentum? That did give me the
:44:04. > :44:06.confidence to finish it up. I think that was the biggest moment of the
:44:07. > :44:15.match. This is one of my favourite places. I love coming back here. How
:44:16. > :44:18.do you view the rest of the week? It doesn't get any easier. I'm playing
:44:19. > :44:22.Gilles Muller next and he is coming off of a win last week and is never
:44:23. > :44:31.fun to play a lefty on the grass. See you tomorrow. Thank you. Most
:44:32. > :44:35.people would say it is not easy to play Sam Querrey. He was too good
:44:36. > :44:38.today for Jordan Thompson but the Aussie has won a lot of fans here at
:44:39. > :44:43.the Queen's Club, putting out Andy Murray, a wonderful performance and
:44:44. > :44:47.showing real spirit there today. Peter and John are with me. Jordan
:44:48. > :44:54.Thompson played well, didn't he? I think we will see a lot more of him.
:44:55. > :44:57.Sam Querrey is tough. We underestimate him, he won his seven
:44:58. > :45:02.years ago and he is dangerous. He looks like he has got his focus
:45:03. > :45:06.back. He has been up and down but when he is cranking his forehand on
:45:07. > :45:10.this surface, I was also impressed with his two-handed backhand,
:45:11. > :45:14.hitting winners, when he is serving well, he is not nice to play on the
:45:15. > :45:20.surface. He has more than just his serve, doesn't he? He really does.
:45:21. > :45:25.It is interesting watching Sam Querrey. OK, he has been top 20, won
:45:26. > :45:30.several tournaments before, but he still have a lot of upside from my
:45:31. > :45:37.viewpoint. He still does things that you would say, wow, fundamentally he
:45:38. > :45:41.could do that a lot better. He serves, his forehand is a great job,
:45:42. > :45:50.his backhand is a good shot. So he does a lot of things that really
:45:51. > :45:53.bother opponents. You know, just mentally, if he could just have a
:45:54. > :45:58.little more intensity at times, I think it would really help him. That
:45:59. > :46:03.last that was such a roller-coaster with so many breaks. We will take
:46:04. > :46:06.you through the break points, because bacteria Sam. He shows his
:46:07. > :46:13.Aussie spirit there, not very happy about it, then he breaks straight
:46:14. > :46:17.back. It was wonderful tennis at this point. It was a really good
:46:18. > :46:21.match. I wasn't sure about the matchup initially, whether it would
:46:22. > :46:30.create good tennis, but it was a fabulous match. Three in a row here.
:46:31. > :46:36.Great. Unbelievable. He had the". Sam was on the ground. Maybe he
:46:37. > :46:42.looked at Symantec his eye off the ball, -- maybe he looked at Sam and
:46:43. > :46:46.took his eye off the ball, because that was such an important moment.
:46:47. > :46:51.That's what Jordan thinks that. Here is Querrey, because he was down 0-
:46:52. > :46:55.40 in this game and he we are talking about it, when he has time
:46:56. > :47:00.to set up that forehand, it is a real weapon. It is a real weapon and
:47:01. > :47:06.with the courts as good as they are, he loves it. I think he moves pretty
:47:07. > :47:12.well for someone of his size. He does. Much better than people think.
:47:13. > :47:18.I agree totally with Peter. You feel like sometimes, you always -- almost
:47:19. > :47:22.want to say to him, open up your shoulders, look like more of a
:47:23. > :47:26.winner. He sometimes looks down too quickly for me. And sometimes, I
:47:27. > :47:30.think a lot of these players are so used to hitting the ball, hitting
:47:31. > :47:34.their way out of trouble that they go for shots on low percentage
:47:35. > :47:40.shots, they are off court or off balance, they go for the spectacular
:47:41. > :47:44.winner, when really, if they hit a short Nadal like angle to get
:47:45. > :47:50.themselves back into the rally, you could win quite be more points.
:47:51. > :47:58.Which I think Sam is guilty of occasionally. But then again, he can
:47:59. > :48:02.play like that tennis, as Nadal found out earlier this year. As
:48:03. > :48:08.Djokovic last year. He is a danger man. He is a danger man and is
:48:09. > :48:13.married found out earlier this week, Jordan Thompson is a bit of a danger
:48:14. > :48:20.man as well. He is ranked 90 in the wild but it looks like he is playing
:48:21. > :48:23.better than that on this surface. I thought he was fabulous. I know he
:48:24. > :48:26.loves this match but I loved his personality, he is fiery. We always
:48:27. > :48:32.look for personalities on the court and I like Kathy engages the crowd.
:48:33. > :48:37.If he is not happy, he hit the ball across. He got his angles right,
:48:38. > :48:42.thankfully. I like his attitude and his game. It's an all-round game. He
:48:43. > :48:49.moves so well, his serve is underrated. He has got a good feel.
:48:50. > :48:53.I think we will see him rapidly rise up the rankings. One thing I am sure
:48:54. > :48:58.we are not going to see too much tomorrow are too many rallies -- is
:48:59. > :49:02.too many rallies with Querrey and Gilles Muller. Next, we have
:49:03. > :49:06.Medvedev taking on Kokkinakis. We are thoroughly enjoying the tennis
:49:07. > :49:08.here and we will do to the next few weeks, but there is a lot more to
:49:09. > :49:24.look forward to on the BBC. # It's all in the air, you hear it
:49:25. > :49:32.everywhere, no matter what you do, it's going to grab hold on you.
:49:33. > :49:47.# California Soul. # California Soul.
:49:48. > :49:52.# Start to hear, it's in your ear. # From early in the morning to
:49:53. > :50:01.sunset. # It's in the air, it's in the
:50:02. > :50:08.air... # Spoiled for choice, aren't we?
:50:09. > :50:14.For the next couple of weeks, it is tennis, culminating in the big W as
:50:15. > :50:19.it's affectionately known, live on the BBC right the way through from
:50:20. > :50:22.the third to the 16th of July. We cannot wait. It's interesting seeing
:50:23. > :50:26.some of these new stars emerging because in the first rounds, people
:50:27. > :50:32.will know more of these players and they are proving that they are not
:50:33. > :50:36.afraid to take on these big names. There are so many good players now
:50:37. > :50:41.and especially when you consider the guys aren't grass court specialists.
:50:42. > :50:45.No one is a grass court specialist any more barring Roger Federer and
:50:46. > :50:50.Andy Murray comedy few players who have played a lot of matches on it.
:50:51. > :50:54.When you get a guy like Shapovalov who has got a big serve, a big game,
:50:55. > :51:01.a lot of guys have that, they are trouble. They are trouble and we
:51:02. > :51:04.have probably got a big serve coming out because 606 Daniil Medvedev
:51:05. > :51:10.coming out to take on the Kokkinakis. What a great serve --
:51:11. > :51:16.what a great story Kokkinakis this. So many injuries. He was listing the
:51:17. > :51:21.number of injuries over the last 18 months. His ranking dropped so low,
:51:22. > :51:27.he is now up to 698. It's an incredible story but he must live in
:51:28. > :51:31.fear, is the body going to hold up? I was just thinking as he said that,
:51:32. > :51:36.were their times in the multiple recoveries that he thought, you know
:51:37. > :51:39.what, maybe my career will never really get started. Are these things
:51:40. > :51:45.going to keep plaguing me? You have got to hand it to him, he is gutsy,
:51:46. > :51:50.he wanted to get back, obviously. We haven't seen him that much this week
:51:51. > :51:53.yet but you can see how good he is and how good he would have been. He
:51:54. > :51:57.has taken a step back because of these injuries but now he is ready
:51:58. > :52:02.to accelerate the words and he's another one who's ranking is only
:52:03. > :52:06.going to climb and climb fast. Just inside the top 700 but you know he
:52:07. > :52:12.will back be back in the top 100 very soon. He has been talking to
:52:13. > :52:16.John. He has done it. A roar from Kokkinakis who is back and winning
:52:17. > :52:26.again at the highest level. The Euro heroes growing up? When I was young,
:52:27. > :52:31.Lleyton Hewitt was my hero. As an Australian, it was lovely to see him
:52:32. > :52:37.do so well. I liked watching Marat Safin as well. He used to smash his
:52:38. > :52:43.rackets. Is that good? I don't know but it is good for the Spectator. I
:52:44. > :52:46.think it made for good viewing and I liked Baghdatis as well. With him
:52:47. > :52:51.being part Greek as well. Those unbelievable runs he at Melbourne
:52:52. > :52:58.Park will stop that was awesome. Do you feel part Greek? For sure. Both
:52:59. > :53:04.my parents are Greek. I speak Greek as well but I am Australian. I
:53:05. > :53:14.definitely build part Greek. The one, give us some Greek. Say the
:53:15. > :53:19.weather is very hot in Greek. To be there, you could say anything and I
:53:20. > :53:21.would know. I was just trying to think what Greek could play
:53:22. > :53:34.Australia at Andy Goode meet. He would you be cheering for that? --
:53:35. > :53:40.what Greece could play Australia at and they could meet. Who would you
:53:41. > :53:46.be cheering for? I would want it to be close. A draw. Was there a point
:53:47. > :53:52.over the last few months where you thought, this is not going to work?
:53:53. > :53:56.For sure. With my shoulder, I spent so much time in rehabilitation, I
:53:57. > :54:02.still wasn't ready after nine months. Then when I thought I was
:54:03. > :54:06.getting over that, I got a groin injury, I tore my pack, I have mad
:54:07. > :54:11.dominoes. There were a lot of times when I was losing my will to get
:54:12. > :54:18.back. What was it that made you get it back? I'm not sure, to be honest.
:54:19. > :54:22.It's what I have done since such a young age, it's what I know best. It
:54:23. > :54:27.sounds stupid but they were definite times when it was depressing out
:54:28. > :54:30.there, knowing I have done the same thing for so long and I haven't been
:54:31. > :54:35.able to progress what I am doing on court. Day by day, having my family
:54:36. > :54:40.there supporting me was huge and just a lot of will for myself,
:54:41. > :54:43.really. That first-round victory a couple of days ago, we could see on
:54:44. > :54:47.your face what it meant to you. Was there a moment in your mind where
:54:48. > :54:52.you are thinking about the bad times and that I kept going for moments
:54:53. > :54:56.like this? Definitely. At the start, it wasn't looking great. I wasn't
:54:57. > :55:01.too comfortable. I didn't go through all that hard work and rubbish to
:55:02. > :55:10.play like this, so I was happy divide my form. As I got towards the
:55:11. > :55:13.finish line, I still wasn't sure I would win, because obviously I had a
:55:14. > :55:15.lot of chances in the second set, but that last feeling is what it's
:55:16. > :55:20.for. Having the crowd roar like that and the emotion at the end. What do
:55:21. > :55:25.you think you can achieve now? I am not sure. I am hoping this ceiling.
:55:26. > :55:30.I will take it day by day. I think my game is good enough to be a very
:55:31. > :55:33.good player but I need to keep working, improve my weaknesses,
:55:34. > :55:38.continue my strengths and busy I want to be top ten. What is good
:55:39. > :55:48.luck in Greek? We will settle on that. Thank you. What a nice guy.
:55:49. > :55:52.His career hadn't even started when the injuries setting, had it,
:55:53. > :55:57.because he was such a great talent. We thought he was one for the
:55:58. > :56:01.future. He is only 21. It's difficult for a guy who have had a
:56:02. > :56:05.bunch of injuries. It's almost like you have two start again and not
:56:06. > :56:09.worry about rehabilitating your stomach or your groin or your
:56:10. > :56:14.shoulder. Just do the whole package, get your whole body working together
:56:15. > :56:19.so that you can maybe then get on a run of health. You know, if you do
:56:20. > :56:22.it piecemeal, you are always injured. Something is always going
:56:23. > :56:29.wrong. At least that was my experience back in the day. And so,
:56:30. > :56:34.at age 21, he maybe needs to not worry so much about results right
:56:35. > :56:38.now, just keep himself together. But also, anyone who's had a major
:56:39. > :56:43.injury and we have all had injuries, you do doubt your body after that,
:56:44. > :56:48.don't you? You doubt if you have had one serious injury, let alone ten
:56:49. > :56:52.like he has had. The amount of time spent in the treatment room and the
:56:53. > :56:58.rehab centre, back and forth, it must have been soul destroying at
:56:59. > :57:02.times and I think deep down, you sort of alluded to that, he is
:57:03. > :57:06.setting goals, he wants to be in the top ten, but I think right now he is
:57:07. > :57:10.thrilled to be back. Every week he played is almost like a bonus and I
:57:11. > :57:15.agree with Peter. He needs to make sure everything is in June and I bet
:57:16. > :57:18.he pays more attention now to making sure everything is OK off court than
:57:19. > :57:23.probably any other player on the tiller. Probably what happens is for
:57:24. > :57:28.overcooked takes you. What he needs to learn now is how his body works
:57:29. > :57:33.and how he can maintain it. That would be the greatest time spent for
:57:34. > :57:38.him. It was wonderful victory, wasn't it, over Raonic? Such a good
:57:39. > :57:44.victory with that huge roar at the end. I'm back! Because Raonic wasn't
:57:45. > :57:52.at his best but he had to hold his nerve. Anyone who can beat Raonic on
:57:53. > :57:56.grass as to play a very good match. Yes, Raonic didn't have a
:57:57. > :57:59.particularly good day but still you have to do battle against that
:58:00. > :58:04.served and Kokkinakis for me was mentally so good in this match. For
:58:05. > :58:12.someone who has been out for so long, has had so little play, he
:58:13. > :58:16.played a superb match. Yes, Milos Raonic growing out but Kokkinakis
:58:17. > :58:21.just proving what a variety he having his gang and it's great to
:58:22. > :58:27.see him back again. And Lleyton Hewitt, he has made such a great
:58:28. > :58:31.team effort, absentee, as far as the Aussies go with Kokkinakis, Thompson
:58:32. > :58:34.and Kyrgios. He wants them to become a team like the great Aussies were
:58:35. > :58:41.from the past. I think that really helps them to. Yes, especially when
:58:42. > :58:45.you are so far away from everything. You can't take a week off and go
:58:46. > :58:51.home. You have got to hang with your mates and pull together. Well, that
:58:52. > :58:58.was that big roar that signalled that when and what a great when it
:58:59. > :59:04.was for Kokkinakis. What about his opponent today, Peter? Six foot six,
:59:05. > :59:09.Daniil Medvedev. We have seen so many great juniors come through a
:59:10. > :59:12.successful junior career like Shapovalov has done well, likes
:59:13. > :59:20.thereafter and Kyrgios. He hasn't had that. He is thought of coming of
:59:21. > :59:25.age now. He is a big guy. I don't know his game that well, to be quite
:59:26. > :59:30.honest with you. He certainly hasn't played that much on grass. That is
:59:31. > :59:36.an advantage for Kokkinakis. As you say, he will have taken heart from
:59:37. > :59:44.the guys like Kyrgios, like Zverev who have really made a dent in the
:59:45. > :59:46.game and, you know, he is on the verge of really making a name for
:59:47. > :00:01.himself in the top 20, top 30. It is interesting, Medvedev beat
:00:02. > :00:06.Nicolas Mahut, and that is a big scalp on grass. Absolutely, one of
:00:07. > :00:09.the guys who serves on the volley is just about as well as anyone, and
:00:10. > :00:17.Willie knows his way around a grass court. So clearly, this guy can
:00:18. > :00:22.play. As you say, two 21-year-olds going head-to-head, I think we will
:00:23. > :00:26.enjoy this the Government we certainly will. And I hope this
:00:27. > :00:32.young man stays fit and healthy all the way through it as well.
:00:33. > :00:35.ANDREW COTTER: Many people will have seen the big names falling at
:00:36. > :00:39.Queen's Club and perhaps been dismayed, but when you look at those
:00:40. > :00:43.while left, they all have interesting stories to be told.
:00:44. > :00:51.Here, we have 221-year-olds have taken different routes to be here.
:00:52. > :00:57.Kokkinakis has been in the spotlight from a very young age. More study
:00:58. > :01:37.progress from Medvedev. It's Kokkinakis who gets us going.
:01:38. > :02:15.Certainly the most gloomy it has been on Centre Court this week.
:02:16. > :03:04.You can disregard the rankings, with all the injuries.
:03:05. > :03:59.Bit of a breeze coming in from the west as well today.
:04:00. > :04:12.JOHN LLOYD: Bit lucky to get away with that, Medvedev. One of the
:04:13. > :04:42.coaches of Medvedev, from the South of France, where Medvedev lives now.
:04:43. > :05:29.First service game, first break point for Daniil Medvedev.
:05:30. > :05:39.Medvedev has it, he stepped up the volume in the bag points, and he has
:05:40. > :05:45.broken serve. It is always interesting, he has had such a big
:05:46. > :05:48.win over Milos Raonic, Kokkinakis, and now he has to try and follow it
:05:49. > :05:53.up in the next match, against someone who on paper does not
:05:54. > :05:59.present same challenge? Yeah, it is a different type of match mentally,
:06:00. > :06:03.as you say. That was a sloppy game, really, from Kokkinakis. He just did
:06:04. > :06:09.not seem to be set in what he needed to do. He had a couple of
:06:10. > :06:13.opportunities, was loose with his groundstrokes, the first serve was a
:06:14. > :06:45.bit off. That break of serve was really handed to Medvedev.
:06:46. > :06:59.Both tall men, but different builds. Kokkinakis, much more powerful
:07:00. > :07:27.looking to fill Medvedev. -- more powerful looking than Medvedev.
:07:28. > :07:58.Medvedev moves well for someone of his size.
:07:59. > :08:07.Once more, mistakes from Kokkinakis, as much as anything else. Yeah, he
:08:08. > :08:11.needs to play a good service game here, just to settle down a little
:08:12. > :10:49.bit. He made a lot of errors in those first two game.
:10:50. > :10:58.That was strange. Medvedev gave it the old fake - I've given up on this
:10:59. > :11:14.point. Then he decided to move a little bit. Got away with it.
:11:15. > :11:28.First game on the board for Kokkinakis. We have spoken quite a
:11:29. > :11:35.bit about his injury problems, but it has been a more steady progress
:11:36. > :11:41.for Daniil Medvedev. Both 21, Medvedev, from Moscow, but as I've
:11:42. > :11:50.mentioned, now works and trains in the South of France. Made his first
:11:51. > :11:57.ATP final in Chennai in January, losing to Bautista Agut. At a
:11:58. > :12:02.struggle around March, with glandular fever. Had to miss a
:12:03. > :12:10.couple of events, in Miami and Marrakesh. His first appearance here
:12:11. > :12:17.at Queen's, but again he's making that steady progress. Have a bit of
:12:18. > :12:21.a breakthrough in Moscow last year, his home city, where he reached the
:12:22. > :12:30.quarterfinals, and that 50 is ranking a little bit. -- that lifted
:12:31. > :12:34.his ranking. By contrast, Kokkinakis was hitting the headlines from a
:12:35. > :12:41.younger age, because his talents. But he has had all sorts of problems
:12:42. > :12:43.with injury. And he was certainly thinking about giving it up, it was
:12:44. > :15:02.so frustrating for him. Not much to fault in the start of
:15:03. > :15:09.Daniil Medvedev. He just wanders around in calm fashion, going about
:15:10. > :15:14.his business. He does not have a really big serve, Medvedev, for
:15:15. > :15:17.someone of his size, but it's accurate. We have seen that three of
:15:18. > :15:47.four times already. In his first match against Milos
:15:48. > :15:54.Raonic, Kokkinakis started serving very badly, and got better as the
:15:55. > :16:24.match went on. He has not got too many first serves in yet.
:16:25. > :16:28.That's good from Kokkinakis, a little bit of help from the net
:16:29. > :18:34.along the way. He's hitting the ball well,
:18:35. > :18:40.Medvedev. He's avoiding too many errors as well. Accurate with those
:18:41. > :18:48.round strokes in that rally. Kokkinakis is on the defensive all
:18:49. > :19:01.the time. The way he hits that background, really good whip to it.
:19:02. > :19:06.Wild and wide from Kokkinakis. Medvedev now in complete control of
:19:07. > :19:21.this first set. He's just looked very composed,
:19:22. > :19:29.following his first-round win over Nicolas Mahut. He was pretty
:19:30. > :19:37.composed on eight points as well in that match, saving all five break
:19:38. > :19:42.points that he faced. It is a good win, to beat Nicolas Mahut on grass.
:19:43. > :19:47.And he had a solid tournament last year as well, getting to the
:19:48. > :19:55.quarterfinals. So, his form is very good at the moment. He's been very
:19:56. > :19:58.composed out here, as you said. On the other hand, Kokkinakis, to me,
:19:59. > :20:03.it looks like his feet aren't moving. He looks like he's just
:20:04. > :20:14.played a much the night before, and hasn't quite got his feet moving. He
:20:15. > :20:19.seems a bit leggy to me at the moment, not quite there yet.
:20:20. > :20:26.Unfortunately, he's just about given up this first set already after such
:20:27. > :20:32.a slow start. To put things in perspective, until his win over
:20:33. > :20:40.Raonic, he did beat Mikhail Youzhny last week, that was his first ATP
:20:41. > :20:43.Tour win in 21 months. So, yes, he's injury-free now, but you have still
:20:44. > :20:44.got to get matches under your belt in order to get comfortable after
:20:45. > :21:04.the injuries. Hop, step and a jump from Medvedev
:21:05. > :21:06.into that one. Yes, not quite sure he needed to do this, but it looks
:21:07. > :22:14.nice! He looked at his coaching team
:22:15. > :22:18.there. That's a regulation shot, big opportunity to get himself back into
:22:19. > :22:28.this set, and it was a regulation forehand.
:22:29. > :22:38.It's an unorthodox serve, not most flowing. But it does its job, he's
:22:39. > :23:00.swinging that serve out wide. And the set is slipping away from
:23:01. > :23:05.Thanasi Kokkinakis. Looks like he needs to hit one big winner and then
:23:06. > :23:32.just explode a little bit, get himself charged up.
:23:33. > :23:38.It has not been his day at the moment - 42% first serves he's made
:23:39. > :26:18.so far in this set. We mentioned, Kokkinakis is playing
:26:19. > :26:33.with a protected ranking, due to medical reasons.
:26:34. > :26:41.Certainly, if he can get very extended run, injury-free, thing you
:26:42. > :26:48.would expect him to get into the top 100, and higher again. He has the
:26:49. > :26:52.potential to be a top 50, top 20 player, if everything comes
:26:53. > :26:55.together. I agree. Today he's certainly not playing at that level.
:26:56. > :27:04.He's all over the place at the moment. His serve has been just off
:27:05. > :27:10.percentage-wise. Ground strokes in that it, footwork is not there. But
:27:11. > :27:15.he can get it back. In his first-round, his first serve was off
:27:16. > :27:24.and then he got the percentage up big-time. That's the first thing he
:27:25. > :27:33.needs to take care of. This Medvedev serve is not usually fast, but it's
:27:34. > :27:43.very effective. 122, it's not that big, but it's an inch from the line
:27:44. > :27:48.- that's what he does so well. That one was only 113. But he gets in a
:27:49. > :28:12.position where he can then attack on the next ball. And a 70% first serve
:28:13. > :28:17.ratio. Exactly! Did not know what he was going to do there. Thought he
:28:18. > :28:21.was going to do his hop and jump again. He took an awfully big swing
:28:22. > :28:43.on that! And there it is, and you would say
:28:44. > :28:50.that has been done with a minimum of fuss by Daniel Medvedev, who takes
:28:51. > :28:53.the first set in emphatic fashion. SUE BARKER: The young Russian very
:28:54. > :28:57.much in control in this match, and we will be right back with it. We
:28:58. > :29:02.can now round up a couple of results from earlier. Former champion and US
:29:03. > :29:07.Open champion Marin Cilic is through, the highest ranked player
:29:08. > :29:17.left in the draw. He beat his opponent from the United States 6-0,
:29:18. > :29:23.6-4. And Sam Querrey, another former champion, is also through. He beat
:29:24. > :29:31.Jordan Thompson in three sets, winning 6-3 in the final set. It was
:29:32. > :29:35.a very entertaining match. So, Sam Querrey and Marin Cilic, both
:29:36. > :29:48.through. And so, the draw as it stands...
:29:49. > :29:55.Another former champion in the bottom half, Grigor Dimitrov - he's
:29:56. > :29:57.looked very impressive, and he will face the winner of the match which
:29:58. > :30:06.is on right now. Feliciano Lopez against Jeremy
:30:07. > :30:22.Chardy still to come. COMMENTATOR: He will be experiencing
:30:23. > :30:26.an Wimbledon for the first time this year. Last year he lost to Marcus
:30:27. > :31:09.Willis who enjoyed himself greatly. Untidy start to this second set from
:31:10. > :32:02.Kokkinakis. His problems continue. Oh. Use all of the court. I don't
:32:03. > :32:41.think he meant to cut this as fine as he did.
:32:42. > :33:29.That last shot may have been the benefit of playing against
:33:30. > :33:34.Kokkinakis last week. He picked where this forehand was going. He
:33:35. > :33:51.read it early. He really won a point that he should have been out of.
:33:52. > :34:03.Again, a difference that a couple of first serves make. . We haven't
:34:04. > :34:11.talked about that much. They had that one meeting in the Netherlands
:34:12. > :34:14.last week. Medvedev winning 6-3, 7-6. Has that fresh in the memory
:34:15. > :35:09.banks. I can't hear what he said, but not
:35:10. > :36:37.pleased with his efforts so far, Kokkinakis.
:36:38. > :36:44.Just error after error. Just doesn't have any rhythm today at the moment,
:36:45. > :37:03.either side, forehand and backhand. Missing so many on both wings.
:37:04. > :37:12.Oh, dear. So Kokkinakis broken right at the start of this second set.
:37:13. > :37:17.Architect of his own demise as well. Medvedev had to do very little
:37:18. > :37:20.there. Actually, if we are looking at the serve of Kokkinakis, it has
:37:21. > :37:26.been loose and ragged. Medvedev, as you talked about John, the opposite.
:37:27. > :37:30.It's so accurate? It's so accurate. You can see where he's aiming those
:37:31. > :37:34.shots. They are so close to the line. Look at the ones down the
:37:35. > :37:38.middle. He has that serve just easy. The one out wide to the forehand,
:37:39. > :37:44.awesome. The one outside to the backhand there. He's just picking
:37:45. > :37:48.his spots. 119, it's an average serve by today's standards. If that.
:37:49. > :37:52.It's below-average. When you are that accurate, it's not all about
:37:53. > :37:56.speed. If you don't serve ha many aces with those type of serves it
:37:57. > :38:01.will enable you to get that first-strike ahead on the next shot.
:38:02. > :38:07.That's what he's within doing. If you are the height he is, even if
:38:08. > :39:04.lacking speed, it's coming down at awkward angles. Exactly.
:39:05. > :39:12.Another example of that, the way Medvedev, again, not a big striker
:39:13. > :39:17.of the ball. You wouldn't say - he's got a fearsome forehand or backhand,
:39:18. > :39:26.it's accurate, it's deep. A lot of good angles. He's one of those one
:39:27. > :39:28.that switches off the mute button during rallies and suddenly springs
:39:29. > :39:46.into noisy life. Not much for them to be concerned
:39:47. > :39:55.about at the moment. Medvedev playing very tidily.
:39:56. > :39:59.There's something for climate change. You can see the great reach
:40:00. > :40:47.that Medvedev has in defence. It's just so simple. He very rarely
:40:48. > :40:51.serve as body serve, he just goes for the lines, but he finds them or
:40:52. > :41:01.he gets very close to them. It's amazing. He's played well. Obviously
:41:02. > :41:06.with that score, Kokkinakis has played poorly in comparison with his
:41:07. > :41:10.first round match. He doesn't doesn't seem to be here today at the
:41:11. > :41:24.moment. He's trying. It's just not there.
:41:25. > :41:42.Unfortunately, they can't help you. Frantic chewing going on down there.
:41:43. > :41:51.I always think when you are playing this badly, just for maybe a game or
:41:52. > :41:57.two, you know, don't go for as many big shots, Kokkinakis. Hit it down
:41:58. > :41:59.the middle, but make your margins wider until you get your rhythm.
:42:00. > :42:26.Stop throwing so men errors in. A challenge with that one. Medvedev
:42:27. > :42:37.looks pretty confident that it was out.
:42:38. > :43:30.He's in danger now Kokkinakis of sinking fast. A couple of points for
:43:31. > :44:16.Medvedev for a double break. He needs something. It's almost like
:44:17. > :44:20.he needs a flash of brilliance. Something to get him going and get
:44:21. > :44:42.the crowd going and and change the course of the match.
:44:43. > :44:53.Oh, dear, oh, dear, Medvedev has the double break. Again, it is loose
:44:54. > :44:57.from Thanasis Kokkinakis. There's no way he is turning this round if he
:44:58. > :45:04.continues to play like this. Can't see it. He just looks flat today. It
:45:05. > :45:10.can happen. But, in comparison with his first round, when he was so
:45:11. > :45:15.animated and in every point, he just looks almost like he's resigned to
:45:16. > :45:18.his fate today and he's just going for so much instead of just trying
:45:19. > :45:23.to calm down a little bit. Make a few more balls in court before you
:45:24. > :45:29.go for the big shot. He's just off. His timing is off. Not moving well.
:45:30. > :45:33.I suppose, after you have a big win like he had, you've been out of the
:45:34. > :45:37.game for so long, really, I know he played last week in a couple of
:45:38. > :45:41.matches here and there, but he got a lot of attention, I'm sure, a lot of
:45:42. > :45:48.interviews, a lot of phone calls come his way. A lot of internet
:45:49. > :45:53.stuff. Sometimes you just... You, sort of, you are so up for a while
:45:54. > :45:57.on it and then you can't get that energy level up the next day or the
:45:58. > :46:04.day after when you play again. It's just not quite there. We have six of
:46:05. > :46:14.the eight quarter-final places settled already. Sam Querrey is
:46:15. > :46:25.through and Marin Cilic. Dimitrov will play the winner of this match.
:46:26. > :46:32.Next up on court is Feliciano Lopez playing Jeremy Chardy. Autumn the
:46:33. > :46:42.indicators are that Daniil Medvedev will be the next to step into the
:46:43. > :46:43.last eight. Just waiting on the upper seats there. They are filing
:46:44. > :47:12.in. Medvedev is going to get going. The man threatening the Top 50 with
:47:13. > :47:25.this run, Medvedev. The composure, the control he's shown suggests he
:47:26. > :47:30.can go further. That's his worst error he's made today, Medvedev. Set
:47:31. > :47:32.him up for it. He doesn't play like a 21-year-old. He's a very season
:47:33. > :47:50.gamer. A very tidy game. It's not based on power, is it,
:47:51. > :47:52.that's for sure. It's more accuracy. Difficult to beat. Making his
:47:53. > :48:09.opponent play one more ball. The way he plays as well. Slowly
:48:10. > :48:12.between points here. Just ambles around, very calm, very measured.
:48:13. > :48:21.Once he steps up to the line he take nos time at all. A couple of
:48:22. > :48:26.bounces, perhaps. It doesn't look good that serve. It's not very
:48:27. > :48:38.powerful, but it is good. It's so accurate. He's racing through this
:48:39. > :48:44.now. They have been on court for short of 50 minutes. Very, very
:48:45. > :48:52.difficult to see a way back for Thanasis Kokkinakis. 48 minutes on
:48:53. > :49:08.court. Kokkinakis trying to find something.
:49:09. > :51:27.Good from Medvedev. That is about as much emotion as you see from him.
:51:28. > :51:55.Again, got himself out of the way and stepped into it.
:51:56. > :52:07.Glad to get something up there in this second set.
:52:08. > :52:17.Not too much for the crowd to get their teeth into it in this match.
:52:18. > :52:21.No. Some good matches, but a few have been quite one-sided and they
:52:22. > :52:29.need a few good rallies to get them going. He's puzzled. He's not
:52:30. > :52:31.working this out. He is not working out the problem he has in front of
:52:32. > :52:35.him. He's just sort of settled on his
:52:36. > :52:39.plan A. It's not working and it's not going to plan B, to try and do
:52:40. > :52:43.something different, that's the problem. It's almost like he's
:52:44. > :52:50.trying to find his way by hitting harder and it's not working. Not
:52:51. > :53:01.having a good afternoon so far. Jordan Thompson losing to Sam
:53:02. > :53:21.Querrey. Kokkinakis in a bit of bother.
:53:22. > :53:36.He's elsewhere now prepare for Wimbledon. Medvedev double break
:53:37. > :53:49.serving 4-1. Just a hint of a smile on his face.
:53:50. > :54:15.Finding such a rhythm now. 75% first serves. Relentless.
:54:16. > :54:26.Only just. Looking for the 45 second game. Might still beat a minute. Ah.
:54:27. > :54:35.Is the second serve ace. There we are, 53 second. Impressive John? It
:54:36. > :54:39.is, it is. He's unorthodox. He's not a fluid sort of player. He doesn't
:54:40. > :54:45.have any really sort of big, big shots in terms of speed and yet the
:54:46. > :54:50.package is good. It's awkward. It's tough to beat. It's accurate.
:54:51. > :54:53.Defends well and moves well for someone who is 6 foot 6. Serving
:54:54. > :55:20.then to stay in this match. A few players, he will come up
:55:21. > :55:26.against some players who will meet him for the first time, they might
:55:27. > :55:30.be taken aback. Might get used to him when they play him a few times.
:55:31. > :55:39.That is what happens as players rise up through the rankings.
:55:40. > :56:14.Oh. I thought he had that for a second.
:56:15. > :56:39.Changing pace of there. The forehand an then he had the backhand. Then a
:56:40. > :57:21.nice little angle. Not much pace on it.
:57:22. > :57:33.Frustration in everything he does now, Kokkinakis, but he has another
:57:34. > :57:37.game. Wele talked about just before the match it was an event in Moscow
:57:38. > :57:43.last year, towards the end of the year, October, that he had a decent
:57:44. > :57:49.run. He got to the quarter-finals. He
:57:50. > :57:53.eventually lost. We saw what he could do. That was the result which
:57:54. > :57:59.gave him a bit of a boost up the rankings. It's hard to make progress
:58:00. > :58:04.when you are playing challenger events and accumulate the points you
:58:05. > :58:07.need one event toive go you the crucial lift upping the rankings.
:58:08. > :58:12.Gives you confidence and access to more events. Once you get
:58:13. > :58:15.established, that's the easier part done, barring injuries. Impressive
:58:16. > :58:23.the way that Medvedev has done things. He has had a steady move up
:58:24. > :58:31.the rankings. He's not a flashy player. No, not at Apart from that
:58:32. > :58:35.all. One bit into the volley which was positively exuberant. There is a
:58:36. > :58:46.man who barely wants to get out of his chair, though. Still just shy of
:58:47. > :58:48.an hour on court. Daniil Medvedev ready to serve for a place in the
:58:49. > :59:49.quarter-finals. And taken on the first attempt by
:59:50. > :59:55.Daniil Medvedev. Not necessarily a match to stir the soul here at the
:59:56. > :00:00.Queen's Club that is a deeply impressive performance from the
:00:01. > :00:03.Russian. This 21-year-old has overpowered and outclassed the
:00:04. > :00:07.21-year-old on the other side of the net, Thanasis Kokkinakis. Well, well
:00:08. > :00:11.beaten by Daniil Medvedev, who moves through to the quarter-finals and
:00:12. > :00:14.continues his rise up the rankings in this sport. What a win.
:00:15. > :00:22.Comprehensive. Thanasis Kokkinakis he had looked so
:00:23. > :00:28.good against Milos Raonic. Different character today. Cuts a sorry figure
:00:29. > :00:34.as he takes his leave. You hope that his recovery from injury and getting
:00:35. > :00:37.back into the game, he needs more regular matches, getting victories,
:00:38. > :00:45.and he too will climb back up the rankings. He is too talented not if
:00:46. > :00:46.he stays injury-free. Today was a wretched performance from
:00:47. > :01:09.Kokkinakis. Not necessarily a showman, Daniil
:01:10. > :01:19.Medvedev, but that was clinical. Doesn't have to reach out too by two
:01:20. > :01:22.class a few hands. He will go through to play Grigor Dimitrov, and
:01:23. > :01:29.it will be very interesting to see how Dimitrov handles him. That was
:01:30. > :01:38.as straightforward as it gets for Daniel Medvedev. We can hear from
:01:39. > :01:42.him now. Well played today. You played last week and it was a lot
:01:43. > :01:49.closer than that - how do you explain the difference? Well,
:01:50. > :01:54.honestly, I think Kokkinakis did not play his best today, because he's a
:01:55. > :01:59.great player, with a huge serve. I was pleased that I managed to have a
:02:00. > :02:05.solid game, I was serving amazing and I am happy. 13 aces, and one
:02:06. > :02:11.game took only 50 seconds - have you got a personal record? I actually
:02:12. > :02:18.don't know if I ever did four aces, I did three today. Most people here
:02:19. > :02:22.today in the arena probably don't know too much about you, so give us
:02:23. > :02:26.some background on when you started playing, you're from Moscow, when
:02:27. > :02:32.you moved to France, things like that? I started to play when I was
:02:33. > :02:39.six. Accidentally, I went into a tennis group, and I'm sure I'm
:02:40. > :02:44.happy! I moved to France when I was 18 because at one point in Russia it
:02:45. > :02:47.is hard to improve, and I'm happy with where I am now. We are
:02:48. > :02:53.discussing, are there any grass courts in Russia? There are actually
:02:54. > :02:58.indoors, synthetic grass. But they're not easy to play, and even
:02:59. > :03:03.much faster than here. There are no outdoor grass courts. Well done.
:03:04. > :03:09.Thank you very much. SUE BARKER: Yes, very well played.
:03:10. > :03:16.Finishing up with another big serve, that was the key to the match. Not a
:03:17. > :03:24.big serve but so effective. He goes through to face Grigor Dimitrov
:03:25. > :03:28.tomorrow. So, that is Centre Court today. And John has made his way
:03:29. > :03:33.here. Peter, we were talking about that serve of his, and John was
:03:34. > :03:38.saying in the commentary, it is not a fast serve, but the placement is
:03:39. > :03:45.so good? First of all, he made over 70% of his first serves. And he
:03:46. > :03:51.lost, what, one point on his first serve? He was placing it amazingly
:03:52. > :03:56.well. It is an awkward looking action, he tosses the ball well out
:03:57. > :04:00.to his right so he gets a lot of slice on it. But it is clearly if it
:04:01. > :04:04.had on this surface. When he's hitting it in as often as he was
:04:05. > :04:11.today, he's a rough customer to break the McCourty how is -- rough
:04:12. > :04:21.customer to break, Kokkinakis did not even get close. Today, he looked
:04:22. > :04:25.totally flat to me today. He was trying, and we were thinking, get a
:04:26. > :04:30.few balls back, make the margins bigger, do something. Decried the
:04:31. > :04:34.opposite, to hit his way out of trouble, and he kept making error
:04:35. > :04:39.after error, looking at his box, wouldn't know what was going on. His
:04:40. > :04:44.serve was bad today, so different from his previous match. But when he
:04:45. > :04:47.has played so little recently, maybe we should have expected that. And
:04:48. > :04:52.also perhaps, because his match was so long against Raonic, perhaps he's
:04:53. > :04:57.woken up the next few days a little sore. The second day after you have
:04:58. > :05:02.a hard work-out is often the most difficult. So this morning maybe he
:05:03. > :05:06.just wasn't feeling that great. And then the panic strikes you, when
:05:07. > :05:10.something's not working properly and you know you can't move, and you
:05:11. > :05:16.think you have to hit a winner on every ball. And it goes from bad to
:05:17. > :05:21.worse. And it is cooler today, there's a strong wind, and sometimes
:05:22. > :05:24.that can put you off as well? And I thought Medvedev handled that so
:05:25. > :05:31.well. Even his groundstrokes, they're not big. But he's so
:05:32. > :05:37.accurate. He soaks up the pace and hits these awkward looking shots.
:05:38. > :05:40.The thing which surprised me a little bit, Kokkinakis having played
:05:41. > :05:45.him just a week ago, I thought he would have at least read some of the
:05:46. > :05:50.serves, or got a feel for them, but he didn't - he had no idea.
:05:51. > :05:55.Medvedev, hitting the ball so close to the lines, making Kokkinakis move
:05:56. > :06:02.all over the place, it is an effortless style? Bernard Tomic, a
:06:03. > :06:07.little bit? Does not seem to hit it hard but he does the job. He will be
:06:08. > :06:11.playing Grigor Dimitrov tomorrow, so it's going to be a very different
:06:12. > :06:15.kind of match, he's not going to have the time that he had out there
:06:16. > :06:21.today. Well, perhaps. But if he serves the way he did today, then he
:06:22. > :06:29.is going to hold serve. And that takes a lot of pressure off the rest
:06:30. > :06:35.of his game. He can then play the kind of match he likes to play. But
:06:36. > :06:41.as you say, Dimitrov is going to be an entirely different proposition
:06:42. > :06:47.tomorrow. Only 21 years of age, and ranked 60 at the moment, you can see
:06:48. > :06:51.he's another one of these youngsters that's going to be moving up the
:06:52. > :06:55.rankings? He plays a mature game. He looks like he knows the court, he
:06:56. > :07:00.knows when to hit the ball at the right time, he makes you win the
:07:01. > :07:04.point of. And when he gets the chance, he finds angles, not a big
:07:05. > :07:09.hitter, but accurate, centage is good. You're going to have to play a
:07:10. > :07:16.good game to beat him. You're going to have to overpower him, or you're
:07:17. > :07:19.going to have to stay with him, because he's not going to go away.
:07:20. > :07:24.One thing you know is that he will be watched by Dani Valverdu,. 'S
:07:25. > :07:34.coach. They're third on Centre Court tomorrow. First up it is Sam Querrey
:07:35. > :07:45.against Gilles Muller, the battle of the big servers.
:07:46. > :07:57.And we will be on the air on BBC Two at the usual time, at one o'clock.
:07:58. > :08:02.Some interesting matchups, with three former champions are people
:08:03. > :08:07.who know their way around this court, and nobody talking about
:08:08. > :08:17.Tomas Berdych? Exactly. He is quite a silent great player! Former
:08:18. > :08:24.Wimbledon finalist! So, I don't know, is he the favourite here? I
:08:25. > :08:30.don't think so. Maybe Cilic, maybe Dimitrov. But he's certainly a
:08:31. > :08:34.dangerous floater. Just before we go to Jeremy Chardy against Lopez, John
:08:35. > :08:39.Inverdale has been getting out and about behind-the-scenes to meet some
:08:40. > :08:42.of the characters who make this tournament work. Today, he takes a
:08:43. > :08:47.look at how the Centre Court seating has changed this year. The year is a
:08:48. > :08:54.long time in tennis. 12 months ago here at Queen's, beneath me was the
:08:55. > :08:58.number one court. Now, this is a magnificent new construction which
:08:59. > :09:02.houses an extra 3000 seats. This whole operation has been
:09:03. > :09:06.masterminded by a man who spends four months year here at Queen's to
:09:07. > :09:12.make sure that everything is fine when it comes to the first day of
:09:13. > :09:16.played. John, tell us about your four months here in the glamorous
:09:17. > :09:21.car park at Queen's Club? Lovely, you can't beat it, can you? I'm
:09:22. > :09:26.usually the first man on site and the last man off. We tend to work
:09:27. > :09:32.with the ground staff to take out all the grass courts, all the clay
:09:33. > :09:37.courts, and cover them, ready for building the marquees and the
:09:38. > :09:41.seating. And how much more of an operation has that been this year
:09:42. > :09:45.because of the expanded Grandstand? It has been quite a bit tougher this
:09:46. > :09:49.year, actually, with more equipment and men coming onto the site.
:09:50. > :09:54.Transport getting in and out of London, as everybody knows, is
:09:55. > :09:58.pretty horrendous. We have had 50 trailers coming in, and 50 going
:09:59. > :10:03.back out again, it is a lot of kit coming on site. You have been
:10:04. > :10:07.working here for 30-odd years, in charge for 26 - what are the biggest
:10:08. > :10:13.changes in that time? Obviously, the size of it, it has just increased
:10:14. > :10:19.every year. I would say we have kept up the standard as it has gone on,
:10:20. > :10:24.it's been good, can't complain. What is the single gift challenge for you
:10:25. > :10:31.year on year? Probably managing the site and managing the men that's on
:10:32. > :10:35.site. It starts off with a small number of men, and then up to 200,
:10:36. > :10:44.maybe more. Challenges, probably getting the kit in and out safely.
:10:45. > :10:48.On the last day of July, or whenever it is, when you get home to Glasgow,
:10:49. > :10:52.what is the first thing you do? When I get home? Probably have a cold
:10:53. > :10:58.beer, because it takes me ten hours to tow the caravan back to Scotland.
:10:59. > :11:03.Have a cold beer and relax. And so on Monday, John and his 200 strong
:11:04. > :11:07.team will begin the arduous process of dismantling this massive
:11:08. > :11:10.operation. And then, 36 weeks after that, they will start all over
:11:11. > :11:14.again. It is incredible, isn't it? We just walked in here on Monday
:11:15. > :11:24.morning and think, it all looks very nice! Can you imagine?! Coming into
:11:25. > :11:29.Queen's, the roads are not built for cars, a lot of cars, anyway! To
:11:30. > :11:34.think they have got to get those huge things in, it must be a
:11:35. > :11:40.nightmare. Good luck, he's still doing the job so he must love it!
:11:41. > :11:44.And also the crowd love it as well, it's such a popular tournament, and
:11:45. > :11:47.now with increased seating, it has given even more people a chance,
:11:48. > :11:52.because so many people can't get their hands on a Wimbledon ticket.
:11:53. > :11:56.And a lot of people say they prefer coming here to Wimbledon, sacrilege,
:11:57. > :12:01.but it is such intimate venue! And they know how to put on a party.
:12:02. > :12:05.They certainly do, it's wonderful entertainment and hospitality here
:12:06. > :12:07.at the Queen's Club. Our final Match Of The Day, the players are already
:12:08. > :12:16.on court, Feliciano Lopez against Jeremy Chardy. Feliciano Lopez, he
:12:17. > :12:24.was so impressive in beating Stan Wawrinka. Well, this surface is made
:12:25. > :12:28.for him. If he can get through this one, he certainly could win this
:12:29. > :12:33.title, he's that good on this surface, he just loves it. He just
:12:34. > :12:36.glides around the court, he's wonderful to watch on this surface.
:12:37. > :12:42.We can look at a couple of shots that he played against Wawrinka.
:12:43. > :12:46.He's got a perfect grass court game, hasn't he? He has gummy reminds me
:12:47. > :12:50.of Roger Taylor. He has a similar sort of playing style, very
:12:51. > :13:01.classical. He understands where to hit the ball... The different spins,
:13:02. > :13:05.he's got the slice, his serve is so effective, and the results prove it
:13:06. > :13:09.as well, three times in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. Playing
:13:10. > :13:15.in Stuttgart, getting through to the final as well, so he's got a lot of
:13:16. > :13:19.matches under his belt. And he's in amazing shape as well. When he comes
:13:20. > :13:23.into this grass court season, knows is a chance for him to do something
:13:24. > :13:27.special. He always feels like on this surface, he's as good as
:13:28. > :13:33.anybody. Some of the shots. The field, with the racket? Yeah, he
:13:34. > :13:44.loves it. He knows when to come in, when the slide serve out. He's an
:13:45. > :13:49.all-round grass court player. As far as Jeremy Chardy is concerned, well,
:13:50. > :13:54.which Jeremy Chardy is going to turn up? He can be a bit unpredictable?
:13:55. > :14:00.Exactly right. He's got a big first serve, so he's going to be dangerous
:14:01. > :14:03.on serve. He also has powerful groundstrokes, but that's about
:14:04. > :14:08.where it ends. We don't always know if those groundstrokes are going to
:14:09. > :14:12.find the mark. And that's the question - is it a day when he's
:14:13. > :14:18.feeling it and he can be almost unplayable? Or will he sprayed it
:14:19. > :14:23.around a little bit? But these players are always dangerous to play
:14:24. > :14:27.but only always dangerous. It would not surprise me if there were some
:14:28. > :14:37.tie-breakers in this match, to be honest. I can't see Chardy breaking
:14:38. > :14:41.Lopez, but I can see him hold in -- I can see him hold in his own serve
:14:42. > :14:45.as well. We are actually on the air for another 45 minutes on BBC Two.
:14:46. > :14:49.After that, coverage will be moving on to the red button. We could be in
:14:50. > :14:54.for a long one. Feliciano Lopez, that left-handed typically, it's
:14:55. > :15:00.such a weapon on grass, more than any other surface? Yeah, because he
:15:01. > :15:05.has the flight one, -- he has the flat serve and the sliced serve. On
:15:06. > :15:17.this surface especially, it stays very low, and so it's difficult to
:15:18. > :15:22.attack. But really, on a slow hard court, for instance, I don't know if
:15:23. > :15:26.guys can get it back into play more often, he gets so many more cheap
:15:27. > :15:32.points with it on this surface, it is a devastating weapon. Got through
:15:33. > :15:37.last year, losing to Lucas Pouille, another of the danger men on the
:15:38. > :15:40.grass courts? I was just thinking that we have had all of these upsets
:15:41. > :15:44.here, and you look at someone like Lucas Pouille, you think how many
:15:45. > :15:49.dangerous floater there are at Wimbledon. There's so many of them
:15:50. > :15:54.that could do well. It's going to be a fascinating, well, the rest of
:15:55. > :15:57.this tournament, and also Wimbledon, because there are a lot of danger
:15:58. > :16:02.men out there now, more so than for many years. And you talk about the
:16:03. > :16:07.training. Feliciano Lopez is 35 years of age, it is the trend in the
:16:08. > :16:14.men's game now, that the players are going on, and actually improving as
:16:15. > :16:18.they get into their mid-30s. The work they do now, with the diet and
:16:19. > :16:23.the physicality of the training sessions, the people they travel
:16:24. > :16:29.with, there's no questions any more, they know exactly what they have to
:16:30. > :16:32.do. Everything is meticulous in their recovery, what they do before
:16:33. > :16:38.and after the match, how much to practise, how much not to. They keep
:16:39. > :16:42.themselves in immaculate shape. The pin-up man for me is Roger Federer,
:16:43. > :16:50.and I think everybody is following. And they think, why not, we can keep
:16:51. > :16:54.on going! It is incredible, six months out, comes back and playing
:16:55. > :17:00.better than ever. He could be the Wimbledon favourite, in many
:17:01. > :17:07.people's eyes. And from any, you would have to say that. He's playing
:17:08. > :17:10.on a grass court in Halle this week. Peter is now on his way to join
:17:11. > :17:15.Andrew Castle for this one. ANDREW CASTLE: Thank you. And such
:17:16. > :17:22.is Peter's athleticism, he's already here! Just settling into position
:17:23. > :17:31.here, as we all are, for what could be a very entertaining match. Having
:17:32. > :17:35.a look at the French rankings, he's ranked number 80 in the world,
:17:36. > :17:40.Jeremy Chardy, a Davis Cup stalwart over the years and former Wimbledon
:17:41. > :17:47.junior champion, somebody who has always played well on grass. Looking
:17:48. > :17:55.at where he ranks in France, with a world ranking of number 80, he is
:17:56. > :18:05.number ten in France. Such is the depth in French tennis. And the same
:18:06. > :18:16.can be said of Spain as well. So, it's Lopez to serve. The last of the
:18:17. > :18:44.quarterfinal positions to be filled, the winner of this, to play Berdych.
:18:45. > :18:56.I did not actually see who that hit, was it a ball girl? They're a pretty
:18:57. > :19:07.tough breed! Did you go to that school? You mention them every day,
:19:08. > :19:13.it seems! They're great! It is a girls school, so no. I thought you
:19:14. > :19:28.might have gone BEFORE the sex change! Andy Lopez has opened up
:19:29. > :20:23.serving big, serving firmly. Settled into his rhythm straightaway.
:20:24. > :20:33.Jeremy Chardy has just really been a spectator in this game. It is a
:20:34. > :20:35.premium, against the big servers, to maintain concentration on your own
:20:36. > :21:05.serve. Jeremy Chardy is a man known for
:21:06. > :21:20.hitting winners and losers on that forehand side. Nobody in France,
:21:21. > :21:25.including Guy Forget, really knows if the forehand is going to go in on
:21:26. > :21:33.that day, but if it does, it is a devastating weapon. He beat Jordan
:21:34. > :21:37.Thompson in the second round of qualifying, so Jordan Thompson was a
:21:38. > :21:46.lucky loser before coming in and beating Andy Murray. He beat Liam
:21:47. > :22:04.Broady of Britain in the first round proper, Jeremy Chardy.
:22:05. > :22:10.PETER FLEMING: And he will be just a little tight in this first game. So,
:22:11. > :22:37.it's fought with danger for him. ANDREW CASTLE: Three of their five
:22:38. > :23:53.matches have gone the distance. A couple of errant ball tosses from
:23:54. > :24:10.Jeremy Chardy already, so something not entirely right at this moment.
:24:11. > :24:23.Well, that was quite deep in the court, a reasonable defensive lob,
:24:24. > :24:59.but dispatched. Yeah, very athletically.
:25:00. > :25:11.Inconsistency is something which has always characterised Shami Chardy's
:25:12. > :25:13.game, but dropping serve so early against Feliciano Lopez could be
:25:14. > :26:11.serious. That's a big first serve, especially
:26:12. > :26:16.when you consider it hit the line. No chance at all on the return.
:26:17. > :26:47.Slowing it down by about 20%. If Lopez can keep the pace on his
:26:48. > :26:54.serve, he can make it very difficult for Lula Chardy to return. The
:26:55. > :27:00.Frenchman has long groundstrokes, long take-backs. So it often makes
:27:01. > :27:03.it difficult for him to time the shot. But when he DOES time it well,
:27:04. > :27:21.he can really power it down. Yes, a couple of double faults, but
:27:22. > :27:33.the pace is impressive. No particular footwork from Chardy
:27:34. > :28:11.there. . If you want to get in touch about
:28:12. > :28:23.anything, any observations, plenty of ways to get in touch. John says -
:28:24. > :28:28.interested to know your thoughts on the tennis ball, is it too quick now
:28:29. > :28:31.with the latest rackets? A slightly softer ball could make the game more
:28:32. > :28:37.enjoyable to watch, Peter Fleming? Well, the balls are hard but they're
:28:38. > :28:43.not light. I think essentially it is the same ball which has been played
:28:44. > :28:47.with for 50 years, ever since they started coming out of a can, which
:28:48. > :28:53.was about 30 five and 40 years ago. A softer ball, by the way, the
:28:54. > :29:00.players would not go for that, it would wear out pretty quickly. But I
:29:01. > :29:06.understand, grass court tennis is very different. Simon says - my son
:29:07. > :29:11.is a budding county player, why do so many juniors go abroad to reach
:29:12. > :29:17.the next level, what can GB tennis do about it? It is a good question
:29:18. > :29:22.but there are so many good academies around the world now. You've got to
:29:23. > :29:26.specialise now at an earlier age than before. Rafael Nadal is opening
:29:27. > :29:31.his Academy full-time from September. It is tough to resist the
:29:32. > :29:46.best in the world. It's the French club system which
:29:47. > :29:52.has produced all of these players, places to go to socialise, families
:29:53. > :29:59.go, tournaments as well. You've got to play. And they have millions of
:30:00. > :30:15.people who play in tournaments, the French.
:30:16. > :30:22.Lopez is putting this set to bed. That slice backhand is more
:30:23. > :30:28.effective on this surface because it skids through and stays low. It
:30:29. > :30:30.becomes an attacking shot. On a clay-court or a slow hard court it's
:30:31. > :31:20.very much a neutral shot. This is a horror, very poor. Well,
:31:21. > :31:25.in a strange sort of way, it's the good news, bad news, for Jeremy
:31:26. > :31:29.Chardy. The bad news is he lost the fist set. The good news, he has a
:31:30. > :31:34.couple of games now to kind of pull himself together. To see if he can't
:31:35. > :31:41.start off on good terms in the second set. He's got to just write
:31:42. > :32:06.this set off now and say - all right, let's try and find a rhythm.
:32:07. > :32:16.Wow. He just hit that right through him.
:32:17. > :32:41.Chardy is standing right there, just couldn't react quickly enough.
:32:42. > :32:51.His arm is just, it's well-oiled and ready to do damage. Lopez, 5-0.
:32:52. > :32:55.That's not much in the way of entertainment, unless you really
:32:56. > :32:58.enjoy a one way spectacle. Like Peter Fleming says, it could change
:32:59. > :33:03.into the second set. 14 minutes played in this second round match at
:33:04. > :33:09.Queen's Club. It has been a tournament full of surprises with
:33:10. > :33:15.Jordan Thompson beating Andy Murray. Tsonga losing second round to Gilles
:33:16. > :33:22.Muller. Wawrinka going out in the fist round to the man we are
:33:23. > :33:27.enjoying here, Feliciano Lopez. Raonic lost. Who knows what will
:33:28. > :33:32.happen next or who your favourite is. I think personally Grigor
:33:33. > :33:37.Dimitrov. It's the manner he's going about his business, others will
:33:38. > :33:45.differ. Yeah. It's hard to bet against Marin Cilic the way he
:33:46. > :33:51.played in fills first matches here. Former champion here. Still plenty
:33:52. > :34:04.to play for. Chardy is ready to playwright now. It looks like he's
:34:05. > :34:08.got a bus to catch. Most odd this. He's having trouble with that.
:34:09. > :35:46.Perhaps nerves have got to him just a tad.
:35:47. > :35:52.Feliciano Lopez support box. Plenty of them in there. That's Mark Lopez
:35:53. > :36:08.there, you see, in the middle. Fabulous doubles player.
:36:09. > :36:23.Mark Lopez, a great doubles player. The stylish hat, naturally, David
:36:24. > :36:27.Beckham. Is I believe that's little Romeo with him, the second of his
:36:28. > :36:43.four children. He's a very keen tennis player.
:36:44. > :37:16.David Beckham due at Glastonbury this weekend. Clamping, no doubt.
:37:17. > :37:28.6-1 in double quick time. I'd be surprised if there's been a quicker
:37:29. > :37:33.set this week. 19 minutes. A little confusing. Now on the women's tour,
:37:34. > :37:37.the WTA Tour, coaches are allowed to come out and say a few words.
:37:38. > :37:41.On the Men's Tour that is not something that is allowed. In Davis
:37:42. > :37:47.Cup you have your coach sitting alongside you. You will have Lyon
:37:48. > :37:50.Smith, talking away. If you were coaching Jeremy Chardy now, Peter
:37:51. > :37:54.Fleming, you would have to be honest with him, wouldn't you? It depends
:37:55. > :38:03.on him, I guess, what would it be - move your feet? Well, yes. Move your
:38:04. > :38:09.feet. But, first things first, relax on your ball toss. Try and settle
:38:10. > :38:14.down so that you can put the ball toss in the same spot twice in a
:38:15. > :38:18.row. And you've got to serve. You've got to be aggressive with your
:38:19. > :38:26.serve. If you miss the first, even go for a few big seconds. Get a few
:38:27. > :38:29.holes and then you can start to assert yourself. Put a bit of
:38:30. > :38:33.scoreboard pressure on your opponent. Don't be afraid to show a
:38:34. > :38:37.little bit of animation. Show the crowd. Use the energy of the crowd
:38:38. > :38:43.by showing you are enthusiastic to be out there. You are keen to play.
:38:44. > :38:46.We could send him an espresso, a single shot to get him going? That
:38:47. > :38:53.is a good point. Sometimes when you are playing in front of a big crowd
:38:54. > :38:58.and you aren on wrong end of one way traffic, it becomes very inhibiting
:38:59. > :39:07.and you start to go into your shell because you are embarrassed. That is
:39:08. > :39:11.probably the wrong reaction. So a very important service game with new
:39:12. > :39:38.tennis balls for Jeremy Chardy. Oh, oh. This is definitely into
:39:39. > :39:44.yipish territory. It's difficult to share anything with the crowd at
:39:45. > :39:52.that point, apart from - somebody come and take me away. I speak with
:39:53. > :39:57.bitter experience! Lopez, on the other hand, knows, put every ball
:39:58. > :39:59.back into play now. Just see if you can't scrape a break here and, he
:40:00. > :41:41.might just break. Chardy keeps hoping his timing might
:41:42. > :41:48.come good. Had doesn't appear to have done.
:41:49. > :41:54.You know he can hit the ball safely into Lopez's sliced backhand just
:41:55. > :42:45.about any time he wants. COMMENTATOR: In fact, it hasn't been
:42:46. > :42:52.a great game from Lopez, this game. It's almost as though he knows, all
:42:53. > :43:01.he needs to do is get one more break of serve and his opponent is done.
:43:02. > :43:07.That is always a terrible mind-set to have. All you have to do
:43:08. > :43:24.mind-set. Well done. Not having an easy time
:43:25. > :43:28.out there, the Frenchman. Mind you, there is enough French players
:43:29. > :43:32.who've made everyone else's life a misery over the last few years, such
:43:33. > :43:35.is their depth. You can hardly win a tournament these days without having
:43:36. > :43:41.to get through a couple of Frenchmen, there are so many good
:43:42. > :43:52.players. Led still by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Do keep your eyes peeled for
:43:53. > :43:54.an upcoming player, 23 years of aged, 15th in the world. A winner
:43:55. > :44:06.last week. He beat Lopez in the final. Had a
:44:07. > :44:10.great run last year at the US Open. Beat Rafael Nadal. Next French man
:44:11. > :44:36.perhaps to make a Grand Slam final. Has he made a
:44:37. > :44:50.massive improvement over the tennis he showed last year, I'm not sure
:44:51. > :45:56.Practiced in the off season in Dubai with Roger Federer. That will help.
:45:57. > :46:02.Lopez continues his dominance on the first serve. He's only lost one
:46:03. > :46:04.point when he's put the fist serve into play. In fact only lost five
:46:05. > :47:23.points on his serve in all. They're coming for you, Peter. Away
:47:24. > :47:28.it goes. Chardy has settled into this match a little. That's a third
:47:29. > :47:34.service hold for him. He's 2-1 up, second set.
:47:35. > :47:39.Chardy 2-1 up. More competitive set. We will be right back with this. We
:47:40. > :47:43.can remind you what happened today. Marin Cilic, too good for the
:47:44. > :47:50.19-year-old American. The former champion and US Open champion goes
:47:51. > :48:02.through 6-0, 6-4. Another former champion through, this was a really
:48:03. > :48:13.competitive match, going three sets. Jordan Thompson won the crowd over
:48:14. > :48:18.but Sam Querrey winning. Thanasis Kokkinakis is not the same player
:48:19. > :48:21.that put out Raonic earlier in the champion, Medvedev winning that one.
:48:22. > :48:33.We are back tomorrow: Just about ten minutes to go before
:48:34. > :48:38.we go to the Red Button today. Sit back and enjoy this one.
:48:39. > :48:42.COMMENTATOR: Thank you for this update. Waiting to see if it become
:48:43. > :48:55.as more competitive match. Half an hour played. Over in Germany, Roger
:48:56. > :49:01.Federer 7-6 up, 2-2, against the left hander. He had a good season,
:49:02. > :49:05.not but not as good as his younger brother who maded it through to the
:49:06. > :49:07.quarter-final of that tournament as we head towards Wimbledon, a
:49:08. > :49:27.week-and-a-half away. He said, I'm OK. My brother is
:49:28. > :49:41.special. I can't compare with him. Like Veus and
:49:42. > :50:06.Serena. Her younger player just happens to be "the greatest."
:50:07. > :50:48.That is an error, suspect it? 15-30. In a rally against one of the great
:50:49. > :50:55.servers. Very disappointed with that. Three or four rows back in
:50:56. > :50:57.front of the members' pavilion. How ungentlemanly. Snagged it out of
:50:58. > :51:13.that gentleman in front. You get the feeling, had the ball
:51:14. > :51:17.been a foot shorter he would have dove on top of the guy to catch it.
:51:18. > :51:29.He should have done it. He should have opened up a pocket and watch
:51:30. > :51:36.the baldies appear in. Pretty good hold from 0-30 down.
:51:37. > :51:44.Doubles taking place here. I was telling you about how entertaining
:51:45. > :51:47.Mark Lopez is as a doubles player with Feliciano Lopez. Watching from
:51:48. > :51:54.the players box, supporting his friend. They lost in the first
:51:55. > :52:07.round, to the recent French Open champions.
:52:08. > :52:40.The American kiwi pair. I beg your pardon.
:52:41. > :52:48.Now Chardy's starting to settle in. It will will be his fourth service
:52:49. > :52:50.hold in a row. An entirely different proposition now than he was in set
:52:51. > :53:31.number one. This is funny # BBC tennis. Bonnie
:53:32. > :53:39.saying. I was one 20 years ago. Best week of my life even though I was
:53:40. > :53:43.hit with a serve. Glad you recovered OK. They get together at 8. 30am at
:53:44. > :53:49.their two schools and get bussed in together. They do each other's hair.
:53:50. > :53:58.As I said, did you go to the same place. It's plaited and crossed
:53:59. > :54:04.over. GCSEs next year or a couple of years away. They are doing a great
:54:05. > :54:08.job here. Tony says. Why don't players play serve and volley on
:54:09. > :54:13.grass? Because the game has changed and guys return serve so well. They
:54:14. > :54:17.are adept at hitting passing shots with the new springs that put more
:54:18. > :54:24.spin on the ball and allow the ball to dip. It's almost taking on a life
:54:25. > :54:28.of its own. Guys haven't served and volleyed on other surfaces. They are
:54:29. > :54:34.not as good as it. Were it still might work on this surface, they
:54:35. > :54:41.just don't like to do it. So it's almost left the game. Lopez is
:54:42. > :54:45.something of a throwback, but he doesn't serve volley too much. His
:54:46. > :54:49.passing shots go past so quickly now, you can't move more than a
:54:50. > :54:52.foot. It's like a well taken penalty in football. You can't save it, even
:54:53. > :55:16.with perfect technique. Sdwrous add one final piece to that
:55:17. > :55:21.puzzle. The courts are so good. I mean, it's like playing on a hard
:55:22. > :55:25.court, virtually. So the returner knows that he's got a decent bounce
:55:26. > :55:45.on every return. This's a dive bomber. Got the best
:55:46. > :55:47.seat in the house there. -- That's a dive bomber. Got the best seat in
:55:48. > :56:04.the house there. Well Chardy's done well changing his
:56:05. > :56:14.serving form around. He still needs a bit of work on the returns.
:56:15. > :56:21.Of course, hasn't had a lot of opportunities to practice it.
:56:22. > :57:29.Struggling to touch the ball. Landing gear down. About 35 seconds
:57:30. > :57:41.away or so for landing. It's a line ball. Seriously, is that how long it
:57:42. > :57:45.takes to get to Heathrow from here? No, I'm just guessing. How far is
:57:46. > :57:52.it, another 10 miles. Probably. Travelling at 180 miles an hour.
:57:53. > :57:56.Still three minutes. No. It's three miles a minute. Right, so. Another
:57:57. > :58:08.three minutes. We are coming off air in about a
:58:09. > :58:12.minute. It will take me a long time to work the maths out. We will
:58:13. > :58:16.continue this match on the Red Button all the way to the end. Back
:58:17. > :58:35.tomorrow with the quarter-final action.
:58:36. > :58:46.Fabulous. 4-3. He has second the settled set, it's a lot closer than
:58:47. > :58:58.the first. We come to the end of our tran
:58:59. > :59:02.mission here on BBC Two. As Andrew said, if you want to continue
:59:03. > :59:05.watching, you can, it's available on the Red Button. We will
