:03:47. > :03:53.think it laid a nice foundation for him to come to this surface and get
:03:54. > :03:57.some more confidence. He moves so well on this surface that it gives
:03:58. > :04:02.him an advantage over most guys simply because a lot of players find

:04:34. > :04:36.Australians, but either way, if you see your name opposite Andy Murray
:04:37. > :04:43.on a grass court, it is a tough draw. But he has already had plenty
:04:44. > :04:47.of matches on this surface, and even Andy Murray, nobody plays their
:04:48. > :04:55.first match with complete and utter comfort, I say that, he will
:04:56. > :05:02.probably be well up in a few sets games. The order of play has
:05:03. > :05:05.slightly changed, because that third match now is Andy Murray taking on
:05:06. > :05:13.Jordan Thompson, but what a line-up we have. Thanasi Kokkinakis has had
:05:14. > :05:17.18 months off the tour with a variety of injuries, he has been
:05:18. > :05:21.given a wildcard, lovely to see him back on the tour. He is playing last

:05:36. > :05:41.the Rincon says he doesn't like the grass too much, but who knows what
:05:42. > :05:48.we will see from him today. On the last match, that could be a great
:05:49. > :05:53.finish, Marin Cilic against a John Isner. They went 12-10 in the fifth
:05:54. > :05:57.the last time they met. And on Court Number One, two of Britain's

:06:12. > :06:18.takes on big server Sam Querrey. I had a word with Paul Annacone, he
:06:19. > :06:24.has worked with some of the greatest players, so what you think you can
:06:25. > :06:30.add? Stan comes onto grass and says, I don't want to be here, so things
:06:31. > :06:33.get him down during matches, whereas on a clay court or hard court, he
:06:34. > :06:39.might let those negatives wash over him, so I think Paul, having worked

:06:54. > :06:55.will bring a bit of calm to Stan and say, this isn't rocket science, you
:06:56. > :06:58.don't have to be unbelievable, you have a great serve so just use it
:06:59. > :07:03.and see if you can't break once a set. We will talk more variety
:07:04. > :07:06.afternoon, but we are going to head life to Centre Court, because it is
:07:07. > :07:14.heading to a tie-break in the opening set between Kokkinakis and
:07:15. > :07:15.Raonic, and there it is, and we can join our commentators for the match,
:07:16. > :07:28.it is John Lloyd and Andrew Cotter. ANDREW COTTER: Kokkinakis really
:07:29. > :07:30.having to grapple every time on his eight break points he has seen off,
:07:31. > :08:29.how will he fair in the tie-break? It is such an impressive weapon, the
:08:30. > :08:35.second serve of Raonic, let alone the first.
:08:36. > :08:43.JOHN LLOYD: Yes, he had won second serve at 138 in this second -- this
:08:44. > :08:49.set, so he might even start going higher than his top 140 first serve.
:08:50. > :08:54.That has to be quick. UMPIRE: This to Kokkinakis is
:08:55. > :08:59.challenging the call, the right service line. The ball was called
:09:00. > :09:03.in. That might have broken the Hawk-Eye,
:09:04. > :09:14.that serve! It looked to be right on the line, and lo and behold. S
:09:15. > :09:31.UMPIRE: Mr Kokkinakis has three challenges remaining.
:09:32. > :09:38.Just towards the end of the set, Kokkinakis has lifted his first
:09:39. > :09:48.serve percentage considerably. Struggling early on.
:09:49. > :10:00.You are right. In the early part of the first set, he was pulling down a
:10:01. > :10:04.lot on his first serve, hit a lot of serves in the middle of the net, but
:10:05. > :10:07.he has correct it that in the last two or three service games, and so
:10:08. > :10:18.far in this tie-breaker as well. It helps a lot when you are up against
:10:19. > :11:01.it. That was any chance there,
:11:02. > :11:05.Kokkinakis should not have missed that forehand. When you are in a
:11:06. > :11:13.rally, you need to make sure you don't make errors like that. Just a
:11:14. > :11:19.reminder, he played in the Netherlands, and his win their over
:11:20. > :11:23.Mikhail Youzhny was his first singles win in 21 months. So that is
:11:24. > :11:36.the size of the task and achievement if he were to beat Raonic today.
:11:37. > :11:42.There you go, just blocked it back, he didn't do much with it, and that
:11:43. > :11:48.was a poor performance from Raonic, he snatched at it. That has piqued
:11:49. > :12:14.the interest of Kyrgios. It is amazing, the main body of the
:12:15. > :12:19.set was dominated by Raonic even though he couldn't make the
:12:20. > :12:22.breakthrough, he was challenging the serve of Kokkinakis all the time and
:12:23. > :12:37.racing through his own service games, but he is up against it here.
:12:38. > :12:44.Amazing, eight break points saved, you wouldn't have thought he had any
:12:45. > :12:49.chance of winning this set, and now he has three set points. I still
:12:50. > :12:53.think Raonic even if he loses a set will find a way to come through this
:12:54. > :12:54.match, but he will be disappointed with not converting any of those
:12:55. > :13:09.break points. One of those three set points is
:13:10. > :13:44.saved. Kokkinakis fixing the line with a
:13:45. > :13:47.stare. Not just that one mini-break behind him, but enough to give
:13:48. > :14:27.Kokkinakis set point on serve. And he takes it, Kokkinakis against
:14:28. > :14:32.another three seed, up against it for so much of that set, but he
:14:33. > :14:40.still manages to claim it in a tie-break, and much from Raonic to
:14:41. > :14:44.ponder. As John was saying, every chance that Raonic will still take
:14:45. > :14:48.this match, but it is going to be a long afternoon's work than he
:14:49. > :14:51.intended or many of us expected, having watched that first set, you
:14:52. > :14:56.would think surely at some point Raonic is going to make the
:14:57. > :15:01.breakthrough, eight break points. You go into a tie-breaker, anything
:15:02. > :15:05.can happen, and Raonic at the end of this day when he sits down with his
:15:06. > :15:10.coaches coming he will going through that, those chances to win it. It
:15:11. > :15:13.was a loose set from Raonic, it looked like he was almost
:15:14. > :15:19.experimenting on shots, of course he wasn't but it looked like that way.
:15:20. > :15:25.Mixing up serve - volley, ground strokes good times but very erratic,
:15:26. > :15:28.it was an iffy kind of set. A lot of people will be joining us midway
:15:29. > :15:34.through the match to state again just where he has been with injury,
:15:35. > :15:38.Kokkinakis. Problems with his shoulder, he had a shoulder
:15:39. > :15:43.operation, last year, he struggled towards the end of 2015, the whole
:15:44. > :15:47.of 2016, and this year right after Brisbane at the start of the year,
:15:48. > :15:51.he was out for pretty much for months with an abdominal strain, and
:15:52. > :16:01.that's why, when he beat Mikhail Youzhny last week, that was his
:16:02. > :16:08.first tour level win in 21 months. And Nick Kyrgios watching as
:16:09. > :16:11.Kokkinakis was watching his match yesterday, they are very good
:16:12. > :16:15.friends, and again, they help each other when they are out on tour, in
:16:16. > :16:24.terms of friendship and company, Kyrgios talking about how homesick
:16:25. > :16:31.he has been at times. He is well wrapped up against the inclement
:16:32. > :16:38.weather! It is very, very warm down there. And Raonic, finalist last
:16:39. > :16:46.year, Wimbledon finalist last year, has his work cut out to make the
:16:47. > :16:52.second round. But no matter how dominant he was on serve throughout
:16:53. > :16:55.much of the first set, suffered in the tie-break, just that one little
:16:56. > :17:27.slip, and Kokkinakis a set to the good.
:17:28. > :18:24.Well, the net provides the perfect drop shot.
:18:25. > :18:58.Kokkinakis giving himself a sarcastic thumbs up there.
:18:59. > :19:06.He doesn't serve a huge number of double faults, that is two now from
:19:07. > :19:24.Raonic. So, Raonic up and running in the
:19:25. > :19:39.second set. A man who has not been without his
:19:40. > :19:46.injury problems, either. Talking about his hamstring injury, he
:19:47. > :19:48.persistently rushed back to the hard court season because he knows that
:19:49. > :19:55.is the surface that really favours him, and he had to withdraw from
:19:56. > :20:01.Delray Beach, and also the following tournament as well. Didn't rush back
:20:02. > :20:06.for the clay-court season, didn't feel that was necessary. But keen to
:20:07. > :20:08.get going on the grass court again, and by all accounts, fighting fit,
:20:09. > :20:28.Raonic. He has used this shot three times
:20:29. > :20:31.now in this match, and they have all been successful. The backhand found
:20:32. > :20:47.the line behind his opponent. It is just the consistency, really
:20:48. > :20:50.good first return where he stayed with that backhand, that one, and
:20:51. > :20:59.just pulled the forehand into the top of the net. Just can't seem to
:21:00. > :21:10.string two in a row. There you go. In the first set, he now missed this
:21:11. > :21:24.return. Beautiful, really, that one, so compact, short backswing.
:21:25. > :21:30.Kokkinakis, no doubt about it, he is actually serving well now, and he
:21:31. > :21:37.started very inconsistently, he was struggling with his first serve,
:21:38. > :21:38.very low ones. He has made some adjustments, and his first serve
:21:39. > :22:30.percentage is rising all the time. That ball, Kokkinakis, it just
:22:31. > :22:31.checked on the line and he wasn't in the right position to hit the decent
:22:32. > :22:55.shot. Wanted Raonic to come in. That is a dozen bases for
:22:56. > :23:48.Kokkinakis. -- aces. So, hold for the 21-year-old from
:23:49. > :23:52.Adelaide, one of the bright young things, along with the man in his
:23:53. > :23:55.support box, Nick Kyrgios, who is supposed to be bringing along the
:23:56. > :24:09.next wave of Australian men's tennis talent.
:24:10. > :24:45.The new coaching setup, Mark Knowles in the green top is a new addition
:24:46. > :25:33.to the team. And that is well done, one of the
:25:34. > :25:35.better points of the match, as well. There have been short and long
:25:36. > :26:47.rallies. It is just enough to encourage
:26:48. > :26:52.Kokkinakis, it is another game from Raonic.
:26:53. > :26:56.UMPIRE: New balls, please. Raonic inconsistent today, just in
:26:57. > :27:05.few loose things which Kokkinakis can take advantage of.
:27:06. > :27:11.Extraordinary on the return of serve with Raonic, he just doesn't seem to
:27:12. > :27:17.have that rhythm. We have seen some brilliant ones, but then ones where
:27:18. > :27:22.he should be able to get the ball back in play at least, and he hasn't
:27:23. > :27:29.done so enough, not anywhere near enough. Should have broken serve
:27:30. > :27:38.quite a few times in that first set, and didn't do it. That is Ricardo
:27:39. > :27:45.Piatti who is the constant in the Milos Raonic coaching setup, but the
:27:46. > :27:52.man on his flankers changed, through McEnroe and Krajicek and now Mark
:27:53. > :27:56.Knowles, a great double play in his time. He has been chopping and
:27:57. > :27:59.changing his coaching setup a little bit and struggling with fitness, so
:28:00. > :28:04.at this point last year and going into Wimbledon and beyond that, we
:28:05. > :28:08.thought he had cracked it, he would be bedded in the top of the game,
:28:09. > :28:15.but a few issues have come in, as can happen. I was thinking with
:28:16. > :28:18.Piatti there, he must be very confident himself, because in the
:28:19. > :28:23.last for five years, he has had about five other coaches brought in,
:28:24. > :28:28.he is still there, but it is almost like, why do you keep needing to
:28:29. > :28:32.bring someone else in? You have got me. But I suppose that is the solid
:28:33. > :28:38.person in his career, and then he want someone else just to sort of
:28:39. > :28:44.come in and help out on bits and pieces, I suppose, but it seems a
:28:45. > :28:45.bit strange. The higher up the ranking you go, the bigger your
:28:46. > :30:46.coaching resumes become. A different feel about the match
:30:47. > :30:50.now. In that first set Raonic was dominant, even if he couldn't break,
:30:51. > :31:10.he was in control of the match. That's part of the reason as well,
:31:11. > :31:20.again we draw attention to it, Kokkinakis's serve has vastly
:31:21. > :31:25.improved as the match has gone on. I am sure Nick Krygios's phone bill
:31:26. > :31:29.must be enormous! Whatever happens to Kokkinakis today, whether he wins
:31:30. > :31:33.or loses this match, he has justified the wildcard spot that he
:31:34. > :31:42.got, right that he was given one. You can see the talent he has. Yes,
:31:43. > :31:45.he was very grateful to Steven far reand expressed his gratitude on
:31:46. > :31:50.social media. He is exactly the kind of case that wildcards are for,
:31:51. > :31:53.someone who is talented but has had a bad run of injuries, otherwise
:31:54. > :33:00.would be higher up the rankings. I haven't seen any monster serves
:33:01. > :33:06.from Raonic, we have seen a couple at 140. I think his opening serve
:33:07. > :33:13.was 140. We thought we were in for fear some ones today. He has been
:33:14. > :33:21.steady enough in the 130s. There we are again. Hold for Raonic. With the
:33:22. > :33:26.hamstring problems he has had you wonder if it hasn't quite got the
:33:27. > :33:31.same snap. Perhaps just still thinking about it in the back of his
:33:32. > :33:36.mind. It's taken a while to shake off. He came back perhaps a little
:33:37. > :33:43.bit too early for the hard court season and it flared up again and
:33:44. > :33:51.shut it down until later on. Didn't have a bad run at the French. On a
:33:52. > :34:08.surface that's not suited to him. Lost in the last 16 there. But this
:34:09. > :34:13.is where he thrives as well. It really is an amphitheatre now with
:34:14. > :34:20.the north stand there. 9500 spectators at its capacity which I
:34:21. > :34:37.am sure it will be close to it for the third match with Andy Murray and
:34:38. > :34:50.Aljaz Bedene, well, he has gone. It's Andy Murray against Jordan
:34:51. > :34:54.Thompson. The next match on Centre Court is Feliciano Lopez against
:34:55. > :35:04.Stan Wawrinka. When that will be, we don't know. The gumshield goes in
:35:05. > :36:21.again for Milos Raonic. Still on serve in the second set.
:36:22. > :36:31.Well played. Nice to watch that. A good rally. There hasn't been too
:36:32. > :36:37.much of it. Raonic plays short points. A well structured point from
:36:38. > :36:45.the Aussie. Nice feel on that drop volley to finish, good point. Seems
:36:46. > :37:09.to be growing as this match goes on, Kokkinakis.
:37:10. > :37:15.Even at the end of a tie-break we said, and we thought that Raonic
:37:16. > :37:22.would still have enough to come through. But not quite so sure now.
:37:23. > :37:24.You are right about the stature, the first set Raonic's body language and
:37:25. > :37:27.facial gestures, almost looked like he was thinking it's a matter of
:37:28. > :37:33.time before I break and win this set. He looked comfortable almost.
:37:34. > :37:39.Kokkinakis on the other hand was nervous and getting agitated. The
:37:40. > :37:44.tables are turning, best of three sets, don't have much time to
:37:45. > :37:45.breathe and the match can be over. Raonic has to start returning
:37:46. > :38:57.belter. Different proposition now,
:38:58. > :39:05.Kokkinakis. Again you have to stress the lack of match time he has had
:39:06. > :39:38.the past few months. Every minute on court will be helping him.
:39:39. > :39:44.There is Aljaz Bedene, a wrist injury forcing him out of the match
:39:45. > :39:49.against Andy Murray. Jordan Thompson the Australian taking his place.
:39:50. > :40:02.That's the third match on Centre Court.
:40:03. > :40:10.For Bedene you hope it's just cautionary. It would have to be
:40:11. > :40:11.serious enough to keep him out of a big match against Murray on Centre
:40:12. > :40:48.Court. That's a good volley to finish that
:40:49. > :40:54.game. Needed something like that to get himself going here. Will be
:40:55. > :40:58.disappointed with his return of serve in this match, Raonic. He is
:40:59. > :41:02.not known for his return to serve, that's for sure, but he hasn't been
:41:03. > :41:06.able to string anything together. Agitated, looking at his box a bit,
:41:07. > :41:10.muttering. He's just not quite there. It's always difficult the
:41:11. > :41:14.first match on grass, but he knows, like anybody else, this tournament
:41:15. > :41:18.is so important for so many reasons. It's a big tournament in its own
:41:19. > :41:23.right but you need matches before Wimbledon and you get down a set and
:41:24. > :41:35.not timing the ball right, playing against an Pope - the first set he
:41:36. > :41:39.had all those chances and get break points and didn't convert one. If
:41:40. > :41:44.you had converted one you could easily have seen this match going
:41:45. > :41:48.away from Kokkinakis. Kokkinakis out of practice and getting blown off
:41:49. > :41:53.court. As Raonic grows in strength. But instead it's been the opposite.
:41:54. > :42:02.Exactly what Kokkinakis needed. Interesting to see if he gets close
:42:03. > :42:10.to taking this match, he said that he tightened up in his match. This
:42:11. > :42:42.would be a far bigger scalp on his return to more regular tennis.
:42:43. > :42:51.Sneaks ahead in the ace count. That's not in the shade, we would
:42:52. > :44:19.stress, but near enough 40 degrees, though.
:44:20. > :44:28.Second serve, took advantage of, finally. A big forehand. Now a
:44:29. > :44:35.slight opening here. But in the first set these big points,
:44:36. > :44:45.Kokkinakis got his serve working well.
:44:46. > :44:53.Again did it so well in the first set. He did respond. He found an
:44:54. > :45:22.answer when he was right up against it. Not really paying attention!
:45:23. > :46:23.Oh-oh! Well, denied and it gives Raonic an opportunity.
:46:24. > :46:29.Again he can not convert Raonic. Nine break points have come. Nine
:46:30. > :47:43.break points have gone. That was the sort of return he
:47:44. > :47:47.should have made. It was in his strike zone on the forehand. Overhit
:47:48. > :48:23.it by a long way. That's well played. Dominating the
:48:24. > :48:40.point, Raonic. He was always on the back foot in
:48:41. > :48:47.that rally. Kokkinakis couldn't quite get ahead in the point. Brutal
:48:48. > :49:39.ground strokes from Raonic. He just keeps doing it. Raonic
:49:40. > :50:02.cannot find a way through. Just a bit more belief in... That
:50:03. > :50:06.box of friends and followers and indeed in Kokkinakis himself, that
:50:07. > :52:10.this is very possible. Kokkinakis asking the crowd whether
:52:11. > :52:30.that ball was in or out. It was out. So another hold for Raonic. He moves
:52:31. > :52:37.on. Still on serve in this second set, though. I wonder if a tie-break
:52:38. > :52:41.might be calling again. STUDIO: It looks likely. We will be
:52:42. > :52:44.back with this match in a moment. One match that's finished on court
:52:45. > :53:05.number one. Julian Benneteau came through
:53:06. > :53:13.against Ward. He is back in training. He has gone through. But
:53:14. > :53:16.good to see James Ward back on a tennis court and hopefully all the
:53:17. > :53:25.injury problems with that knee has gone away but Julian Benneteau is
:53:26. > :53:29.through to the next round. Andy Murray has been practising today. He
:53:30. > :53:33.is third match on Centre Court, not against Bedene, but now he faces
:53:34. > :53:39.Jordan Thompson of Australia who has had some big wins. He has beaten
:53:40. > :53:42.David Ferrer. So a different match for Andy. He is third on Centre
:53:43. > :53:54.Court today. We have a lot to look forward to as
:53:55. > :53:57.well because after this match Feliciano Lopez is against Stan
:53:58. > :54:10.Wawrinka who got through to the final beating Murray in the
:54:11. > :54:14.semifinal at Roland Garos. And Marin Cilic against John Isner. That could
:54:15. > :54:17.be a long match later. We could have long matches on Centre Court today.
:54:18. > :54:26.We certainly are enjoying this one. Let's go back to it.
:54:27. > :54:36.Yeah, finely balanced. Kokkinakis serving to stay in the set. Bedene
:54:37. > :54:38.is not serving at all today. He was standing up in the balcony watching
:54:39. > :54:57.on. It's impressive the way Kokkinakis
:54:58. > :55:01.has changed that first serve percentage. First three, four
:55:02. > :55:07.service games the first set it was pretty poor. First serves in the
:55:08. > :55:08.middle of the net. Since then he's really improved his percentage.
:55:09. > :56:08.Apart from that one! Again impressive from Kokkinakis.
:56:09. > :56:17.The second time he has held to love in this match. The balance has
:56:18. > :56:46.certainly shifted. I think that serve might have been
:56:47. > :57:00.good looking at the benefit of seeing Hauk-eye. Doesn't matter.
:57:01. > :57:13.Really has two first serves when it comes down to it.
:57:14. > :57:20.He looks like he could hold serve all day long if a match was going on
:57:21. > :57:27.ten, 12 sets but the problem is it also looks like he can't break
:57:28. > :57:31.serve, or hasn't so far. As long as there are tie-breaks others will
:57:32. > :58:19.have a chance against Raonic. That's a demonstration really in
:58:20. > :58:25.there of the second serve. Remarkable. 128 and 129 serve,
:58:26. > :58:33.second serve in that game. That's just ridiculous.
:58:34. > :58:38.You wonder how much he practises that serve. I imagine still a lot
:58:39. > :58:43.even though you would think he can serve like that in his sleep. The
:58:44. > :58:50.returns of serve he needs to work on. You talk about consistencies, he
:58:51. > :58:54.wraps himself in an ice towel. The consistency hasn't quite been there
:58:55. > :59:00.for Raonic but again he is also out of match practice. Certainly hasn't
:59:01. > :59:04.been playing a huge amount this year because of the hamstring problems.
:59:05. > :59:13.Did get a decent enough run at the French Open. But he needs a good run
:59:14. > :59:14.here. He needs to get the confidence ahead of Wimbledon, as much as
:59:15. > :59:48.anything else. Trying to encourage his man as he
:59:49. > :59:54.gets back to his feet. Here it will be Kokkinakis serving to try to take
:59:55. > :59:58.it to a tie-break. He knows just about his only chance really, so
:59:59. > :00:30.difficult to break Raonic. That was poor shot selection. From
:00:31. > :00:33.that position on the court, pushed back four, five feet deep behind the
:00:34. > :00:37.baseline and goes for a shot down the line. That's the one you have to
:00:38. > :00:41.hoist back cross-court and get back into a neutral position in the
:00:42. > :01:15.middle of the court. No sign at the moment of any
:01:16. > :01:54.tightening. Well, can't do better than that,
:01:55. > :02:02.another hold to love for Kokkinakis, and into the tie-break we go. The
:02:03. > :02:09.man whose victory over Mikhail Youzhny in 's-Hertogenbosch, his
:02:10. > :02:12.previous win before that was 2015 on the tour, and here he is a tie-break
:02:13. > :02:44.away from knocking out Milos Raonic. He has annoyed himself there,
:02:45. > :02:46.Kokkinakis, because that was an easy second serve, only 104, he had a
:02:47. > :03:16.good chance to make that return. I was going to ask the question, I
:03:17. > :03:22.wonder how that serve has improved, certainly got better in the first
:03:23. > :03:24.half, I wondered how that would stand up to the tie-break. Good
:03:25. > :03:42.signs so far. A mini-break in the hands of Raonic
:03:43. > :04:46.is significant. Well, he nibbles back. Just trying
:04:47. > :04:49.to get anything on that serve to return it, trying to give himself an
:04:50. > :04:59.opportunity to get into the rally. That was a brilliant one-two punch
:05:00. > :05:01.there, the pace of the Raonic serve, but he directed it beautifully. Back
:05:02. > :05:20.on serve. He dealt with that one well, as
:05:21. > :05:23.well, he missed two of those in the first set almost from the same
:05:24. > :05:27.position, Kokkinakis, where he sort of stayed up on the ball and drag
:05:28. > :05:36.the ball into the net, but that one, stayed with it perfectly. I don't
:05:37. > :05:40.think we can take a third set. His problem is he is not wearing
:05:41. > :05:41.anything underneath the fleadh, so he can't go down to any fewer layers
:05:42. > :05:56.Alex So, we are on serve in this
:05:57. > :06:16.tie-break. And loose again. Something about the
:06:17. > :06:30.bounce. Once more, momentum shifts back to
:06:31. > :07:25.Raonic. That is beautifully done. Kokkinakis
:07:26. > :07:33.through everything at him, but reaction, soft hands.
:07:34. > :07:38.Marvellous volley that was, lunge volley, the approach shot was good,
:07:39. > :07:44.stayed down low, you can see the good finish there. That is a
:07:45. > :08:04.fabulous volley, and it brings about three set points.
:08:05. > :08:09.Carbon copy in reverse of the first set, three set points were there,
:08:10. > :08:36.but still just that one mini-break. Puts the pressure back on Raonic at
:08:37. > :08:38.least. But now one of the best service in the game to try and close
:08:39. > :09:29.it out. Not yet! Not yet for Raonic. A
:09:30. > :09:38.spring in the step again of Kokkinakis, and now it's down to the
:09:39. > :09:42.nerve. He looked like a player there, Raonic, that is not
:09:43. > :09:47.confident, a bit rusty. Two opportunities on forehand to do
:09:48. > :09:52.damage, the first one he didn't do anything with, and the second one, a
:09:53. > :10:41.poor miss. Oh, the technique there, he didn't
:10:42. > :10:42.get his feet right on that at all. So, Raonic falters, and Kokkinakis
:10:43. > :10:54.to match point. A man who has had one tour level win
:10:55. > :10:57.since 2015, a man who has been wracked by injury, on the brink of
:10:58. > :11:29.knocking out the number three seed. Cannot quite do it, it was a decent
:11:30. > :11:52.second serve, but the return from Raonic to -- too good.
:11:53. > :12:02.Yes, came the cry from Kyrgios, and Kokkinakis once again will have his
:12:03. > :12:53.opportunity, this time on the serve of Raonic.
:12:54. > :13:04.He has done it again, Kokkinakis, a roar from the Australian. Brought it
:13:05. > :13:12.right back to him there, Raonic. A nervous looking shocked, that was.
:13:13. > :13:38.So, a third opportunity, a third match point for Thanasi Kokkinakis.
:13:39. > :13:50.And he has done it! A roar from Kokkinakis, who is back and winning
:13:51. > :13:57.at the highest level, he has seen off last year's finalist, the world
:13:58. > :14:02.number three seed, Raonic, is gone, and Kokkinakis is through, and all
:14:03. > :14:05.his injuries fade into memory. What a win for Thanasi Kokkinakis here at
:14:06. > :14:16.Queen's. And he has got something to try and
:14:17. > :14:27.find before Wimbledon celebrations continue. A smile from Nick Arias,
:14:28. > :14:34.who cruelly robbed of his win by injury. Milos Raonic so close to
:14:35. > :14:39.winning here last year against Andy Murray, and went almost all the way
:14:40. > :14:46.at Wimbledon as well, but not quite himself, and Kokkinakis can't really
:14:47. > :14:52.overstate what a very impressive victory that is, bearing in mind
:14:53. > :15:00.where he's been. 2016 was pretty much a write-off, even much of this
:15:01. > :15:08.year has been the affected by injury. Two tie-breaks it took,
:15:09. > :15:13.often the way against Milos Raonic, but under pressure he was solid, and
:15:14. > :15:15.Thanasi Kokkinakis grew in stature as the match went on, and this is
:15:16. > :15:33.how he saw it out. And that is what it means to make it
:15:34. > :15:40.through against Milos Raonic, a great win for Thanasi Kokkinakis.
:15:41. > :15:49.Nick Kyrgios among those who couldn't take their eyes away on
:15:50. > :15:57.that final point, but the reaction said it all. A great win for his
:15:58. > :16:04.great friend. Almost got out of his seat! But what a win for Thanasi
:16:05. > :16:07.Kokkinakis, two tie-breaks against Milos Raonic, very interested to get
:16:08. > :16:12.his thoughts, and he is talking to John Inverdale.
:16:13. > :16:20.Many congratulations. How much does that match mean to you? Thank you.
:16:21. > :16:24.It is everything, it is huge for me. Obviously being out of the game so
:16:25. > :16:27.long, and then first top ten when, to do it on the court like this,
:16:28. > :16:32.massive thanks to the tournament director, Stephen Farrow, I wouldn't
:16:33. > :16:35.be on the court if it wasn't for him, my ranking is nearly outside
:16:36. > :16:41.1000, so I wouldn't have a chance to be hit if it wasn't for him, so I am
:16:42. > :16:44.so excited, thank you. A lot of people watching here and at home may
:16:45. > :16:47.not be aware of the litany of injuries you have had over the last
:16:48. > :16:51.18 months, so give us a medical rundown of what's been going wrong.
:16:52. > :16:56.You don't want it, it's too extensive! No, it's crazy, there is
:16:57. > :17:00.no point about that. I'm trying to look forward now. It is brutal but
:17:01. > :17:06.I'm trying to get myself going week by week. I was 22 months out of the
:17:07. > :17:11.game, something crazy like that, but I can't wait to play my next rounds,
:17:12. > :17:16.this Centre Court is unreal, such an unbelievable club, and the support
:17:17. > :17:20.was unreal, sorry for the first set, it was a bit ugly there. Ann
:17:21. > :17:25.Travers, you have been out of the game for so long, you are not that
:17:26. > :17:29.tight, you showed no nerves at all, it seemed like you were just
:17:30. > :17:34.relishing the challenge. I was shaking in my boots! I had the
:17:35. > :17:42.chance, got a bit lucky, something like that it is usually game over
:17:43. > :17:47.when he is serving to win, but I thought, I am going for it! And you
:17:48. > :17:51.did, many congratulations, see you in the next round. Thank you very
:17:52. > :17:57.much, everyone. SUE BARKER: What an incredible
:17:58. > :18:01.story, and he is brutally honest. Nick Kyrgios was saying he is
:18:02. > :18:04.hitting the ball great in practice, he just hasn't had the matches, but
:18:05. > :18:09.he looks right back to his best, and we look forward to seeing him. I get
:18:10. > :18:13.the feeling Milos Raonic might be checking out the trains to
:18:14. > :18:18.Eastbourne. He needs to, he was rusty today. He served well as he
:18:19. > :18:22.always does, but his ground strokes, he didn't return serve at all, he
:18:23. > :18:26.couldn't string two points together, one good one and then three bad
:18:27. > :18:30.ones, and he was so tight in the tie-breaker, for someone who is just
:18:31. > :18:35.not confident at the moment, but a great performance by the young
:18:36. > :18:37.Aussie. To save eight break points in the first set, for someone who
:18:38. > :18:44.hasn't played he played the big points unbelievably well. Until you
:18:45. > :18:48.go out there and win a couple of those big points, you don't know you
:18:49. > :18:53.can do it, when you have been out, so he is a really strong player, and
:18:54. > :18:58.on a grass court, the physicality he brings, and he has a nice touch. He
:18:59. > :19:08.is a dangerous man. Mind you, that train goes through Polegate, Lewis,
:19:09. > :19:12.about two hours on the train! Tennis is the most credible scoring
:19:13. > :19:16.system, because Raonic won more points than Kokkinakis, he had nine
:19:17. > :19:20.break points and didn't convert any of them, you can't do that and get
:19:21. > :19:25.away with it. I remember once arguing with my dad when he said
:19:26. > :19:28.there are big points and there are points which are less important, you
:19:29. > :19:32.have to win the big points, and that is the name of the game. Agonising
:19:33. > :19:36.when those points are and what to do on is the difference between
:19:37. > :19:39.somebody that has played a lot of tennis and that hasn't, which is
:19:40. > :19:42.great news for Kokkinakis here, he has got the job done despite
:19:43. > :19:47.everything, he won the that mattered. That last backhand down
:19:48. > :19:51.the line, a feeling. You think your career is over before it has really
:19:52. > :19:56.begun, but he is back, and Raonic no good at all ahead of Wimbledon
:19:57. > :20:00.defence, and quite a few computer points dropping off here as well.
:20:01. > :20:04.That he was saying he learned so much from last year, Teresa, I
:20:05. > :20:08.bottled it up inside, I have to be aggressive on court, and that is
:20:09. > :20:11.what he wasn't. We can look at some of the key points, that is what you
:20:12. > :20:19.wanted him to do and he just didn't do it, did he? Know, there was a
:20:20. > :20:23.hesitation, that was the problem. That was Kokkinakis being a little
:20:24. > :20:27.nervous there on his match point. So many serves he got his racket on,
:20:28. > :20:32.Raonic, but just couldn't take the ball back in court, it was very
:20:33. > :20:37.erratic. And this one, why did he hit it back to him? That was
:20:38. > :20:43.extraordinary, an awful first volley. But for someone of his
:20:44. > :20:49.class. He almost slips here, I think. If he had gone down, they
:20:50. > :20:52.would still be out there playing the first set, but he had the courage of
:20:53. > :20:56.his conviction on the backhand side, and that is what it means. Delighted
:20:57. > :21:01.to see Kyrgios cheering him on as well, you need teamwork when you are
:21:02. > :21:04.a long way from home. They have an incredible team spirit but I think
:21:05. > :21:10.is important when you are on the tour. Always have been, the Aussies,
:21:11. > :21:15.in the old days, you had Roy Emerson and Fred Stolle staying in the same
:21:16. > :21:22.apartment, and Roy made Fred breakfast before the Wimbledon
:21:23. > :21:24.final, so they have always have a closeness, and out on the tour it
:21:25. > :21:28.can be a lonely existence, especially when you are losing, and
:21:29. > :21:34.they all get together and cheery job, they generally want the players
:21:35. > :21:38.to win, it is a good team spirit. Yes, there used to tip the team out,
:21:39. > :21:46.and the youngsters in my generation, slightly after you, Stoltenberg,
:21:47. > :21:50.Woodbridge, Woodford, Darren Cahill and others as well, a number of
:21:51. > :21:56.them, they travelled under the BP banner as was. It is a great system,
:21:57. > :22:01.they worked hard, and you could tell they were going to get the max out
:22:02. > :22:05.of their tennis. I wish Kyrgios would get the max out of his tennis.
:22:06. > :22:09.He does at times, he did in Miami and he is beginning to look as
:22:10. > :22:13.though he is getting together. But as far as Milos Raonic is concerned,
:22:14. > :22:18.he has got to find some matches before Wimbledon. I would have
:22:19. > :22:21.thought so, I'd be surprised if he doesn't go and play next week and
:22:22. > :22:26.there, because there is a decent gap now, and he didn't want that gap.
:22:27. > :22:31.You could see it in his game, there was hesitation. OK, he didn't lose
:22:32. > :22:35.his serve, what's new? But on the big point when it mattered, you
:22:36. > :22:39.could see him go to the ball and wonder if he was going to make it,
:22:40. > :22:44.instead of which when you're winning playing matches, it is natural. It
:22:45. > :22:48.was a stop start sort of match for him today and he needs play. As
:22:49. > :22:55.Djokovic possibly down in Eastbourne as well, Raonic. There doesn't seem
:22:56. > :22:59.to have been confirmed so far. Do we have any facts on that? Only that
:23:00. > :23:05.allegedly a member of his team said would there be a wildcard available
:23:06. > :23:10.for Novak? You can't imagine the tournament director saying no! That
:23:11. > :23:19.depends on the negotiation that goes with it. Yes, there is a wildcard,
:23:20. > :23:22.how much do you want it? It is a different negotiation we have five
:23:23. > :23:27.or six games, and they do negotiate the big ones. And there is no
:23:28. > :23:31.substitute for having matches, you can go and practice for as many
:23:32. > :23:39.hours as you want, but it is totally different out there, isn't it? Yes,
:23:40. > :23:41.that is what I was so impressed by Kokkinakis, his first service
:23:42. > :23:45.percentage was awful in the first three games, and then all of a
:23:46. > :23:50.sudden he realised what he was doing technically, he was dropping his
:23:51. > :23:52.left shoulder, corrected it and his first serve percentage went up and
:23:53. > :23:58.he corrected himself in the match, and on the big points, almost no
:23:59. > :24:01.hesitation. He got a bit tight in the tie-breaker couple of points,
:24:02. > :24:06.but you expect that. When it came down to it, he converted his match
:24:07. > :24:14.point well. And not always at the end, I was on the balcony watching,
:24:15. > :24:20.it is hot down there, too - three, 15-40 and she got through that, and
:24:21. > :24:25.this is where you have to be careful because if Raonic wins that, he will
:24:26. > :24:28.win the set. There is a real buzz going around here, and Stephen Farah
:24:29. > :24:33.must be thinking, I could do this guy a favour and then he comes in
:24:34. > :24:36.and beats one of my superstars! I remember when Dimitrov was a
:24:37. > :24:41.wildcard here, so don't worry, we want to see more of Kokkinakis. They
:24:42. > :24:46.like his tennis at his personality. And they will Mike this tennis as
:24:47. > :24:55.well. Feliciano Lopez leading out Stan Wawrinka, a wonderful clash of
:24:56. > :25:00.styles. Lopez knows his way around a grass court, amazing serve, great
:25:01. > :25:05.touch, it will be interesting to see what Paul Annacone has encouraged
:25:06. > :25:10.Stan Wawrinka to do. I would've thought that this is the one round
:25:11. > :25:15.that Stan Wawrinka would rather not have had. No one would want it! Yes,
:25:16. > :25:20.Paul Annacone, in the limited amount of time he has had, if he has added
:25:21. > :25:25.new answers to his game, this is a tough first round. But again, Stan
:25:26. > :25:29.Wawrinka could be good on grass, better than he is, he is already
:25:30. > :25:35.good, but at the top level, if you believed in himself, he has got the
:25:36. > :25:39.game. He is one of the best one-two strikers in the game, there is no
:25:40. > :25:42.reason why he can't win more matches. It is pretty
:25:43. > :25:45.straightforward what Paul Annacone is going to say to him, if you are
:25:46. > :25:50.going to chip the ball back into play to neutralise your opponent's
:25:51. > :25:55.serve, nobody is serve-volleying nowadays, do it as clearly as you
:25:56. > :25:58.can, and then it is 50-50, get the first strike in, and Paul has been
:25:59. > :26:05.speaking to Magnus Norman who is still his regular coach much more
:26:06. > :26:09.than he has been speaking to Stan, so he has to easy jobs now, one to
:26:10. > :26:12.be a commentator which he does a lot of the time, and the other is to
:26:13. > :26:16.coach Stan Wawrinka, which I think he is relishing being back in
:26:17. > :26:23.amongst it, in the player lounge and feeling the tennis again. It was
:26:24. > :26:29.very wise indeed. So, Stan Wawrinka on Centre Court, and he spoke to us
:26:30. > :26:32.a couple of days ago. This is the surface perhaps that you
:26:33. > :26:38.need to master more than the other three, do you feel? For sure. It is
:26:39. > :26:44.quick, the change, but it is the same for any player, so it is always
:26:45. > :26:47.interesting to come back on grass. I love to play on grass, I still need
:26:48. > :26:52.to improve a few things to play my best tennis, and I'm trying to do
:26:53. > :26:54.that. I love to come back here at Queen's, it is an amazing
:26:55. > :26:59.tournament, and hopefully this year I can makes a better results. The
:27:00. > :27:06.one Grand Slam you haven't won is Wimbledon, and it is on grass. Does
:27:07. > :27:13.it prey on your mind at all? Not at all. For me what is important is to
:27:14. > :27:18.keep trying to improve my game in general, my game on grass, trying to
:27:19. > :27:22.find the right we had to play my best tennis on grass, and then we
:27:23. > :27:26.will see what happens. You say you are far from winning Northern, I
:27:27. > :27:31.take it back at Queen's this year you will be wanted to get some time
:27:32. > :27:35.on the grass this week? Yes, I want to play a good tournament here, that
:27:36. > :27:41.is my goal, and foreshore, to practice you, it is amazing, I have
:27:42. > :27:45.been here for a few days, it is perfect to practice and get a lot of
:27:46. > :27:48.time on a grass court, and I want try my best to play the best tennis
:27:49. > :27:54.here. Magnus Norman still your coach, but you have brought an Paul
:27:55. > :28:00.Annacone, is that to try to help you master the surface? I think it is
:28:01. > :28:06.many reasons. In general it is to improve my game or have someone else
:28:07. > :28:12.to keep improving my game. Not only on the grass, but also in general. I
:28:13. > :28:15.think he has a lot of experience, he is a great car and great coach, so
:28:16. > :28:19.I'm looking forward to having him on the team. Do you really feel you are
:28:20. > :28:24.far away from winning Wimbledon? You are the third best player in the
:28:25. > :28:27.world. You have a second seeding at Queen's, you will have a high
:28:28. > :28:35.ceiling at Wimbledon. People will fear you, Stan. I know, and I know
:28:36. > :28:39.when I play my best tennis I can play beat every player, but I am far
:28:40. > :28:42.away from winning Wimbledon the same way that I'm far away from winning
:28:43. > :28:50.the next US Open. I know how difficult it is to win a Grand Slam.
:28:51. > :28:54.Everything has to be great. So I'm not thinking about that, I am not
:28:55. > :28:57.focusing on that, as I said firmly it is more important what I'm doing
:28:58. > :29:02.day by day and giving myself the maximum chance to play my best
:29:03. > :29:11.tennis. How many years ahead you feel you still have a in new, with
:29:12. > :29:18.players like Federer still going into their late thirties? I think I
:29:19. > :29:21.have a few years left. He is so brutally honest, writing himself off
:29:22. > :29:25.about Wimbledon, what is going wrong? You can understand he hasn't
:29:26. > :29:30.got past the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, so you can ask yourself
:29:31. > :29:35.questions. It is refreshing to have someone just being so honest. It is,
:29:36. > :29:40.not to the party line, but having said that, it would be nice just for
:29:41. > :29:44.one time for him to say, I feel I can win Wimbledon, rather than
:29:45. > :29:48.saying, I feel I can win it. It is always a little bit, you feel that
:29:49. > :29:53.he just doesn't think that he can win this tournament, Queen's or
:29:54. > :30:01.Wimbledon. But I do believe that he has got the game to, but if he
:30:02. > :30:05.doesn't believe it, then that is that. The courts are playing, they
:30:06. > :30:08.bounce higher than they used to and they are slower than they used to
:30:09. > :30:16.be, maybe not here but certainly at Wimbledon.
:30:17. > :30:26.You have to look at nadal. Wawrinka has weapons that on this surface are
:30:27. > :30:29.so pure. In the old days when the bounces were down by the ankles it
:30:30. > :30:34.was a different matter. Now it's playing like a hard court and there
:30:35. > :30:38.is no reason why he can't play well on this surface. He is going to need
:30:39. > :30:50.to play well today, up against Three-times quarter-finalist at
:30:51. > :30:56.Wimbledon. Huge serve, had an amazing tournament in Stuttgart. He
:30:57. > :31:04.is a man in form. And used to this surface. He is a class player on a
:31:05. > :31:08.lot of surfaces but this surface, he is Spanish but it's almost like he
:31:09. > :31:12.was born here. It's made for his game. Beautiful volleyer. Glides
:31:13. > :31:18.around the court. Good slice approach shot when he needs it. Big
:31:19. > :31:24.forehand. This is a... It's a 50-50 match. Absolutely. Having a weapon
:31:25. > :31:33.and serve and well left-handed. Stan is going to be doing a bit of
:31:34. > :31:39.running. It is going to open up the court. Absolutely right. In some
:31:40. > :31:42.ways you you have to put Lopez as a slight favourite. It's very close.
:31:43. > :31:48.This is going to - should be, if they both play well, could be the
:31:49. > :31:50.best Match of the Day. Absolutely. On grass, movement is so key in the
:31:51. > :31:55.first few matches when you have moved from the clay to the grass.
:31:56. > :32:00.That's what you worry for Stan, taken so wide into those green areas
:32:01. > :32:04.and then being able to recover and get back. If you had a camera on
:32:05. > :32:09.both and see their footwork you will see Lopez is a better mover on
:32:10. > :32:13.grass. He glides on the grass. Stan is sort of, takes two big strides
:32:14. > :32:16.and doesn't bend as well. Lopez is a better grass court mover than Stan
:32:17. > :32:20.Wawrinka. We are seeing Paul there. We know he is going to be wanting
:32:21. > :32:25.him to be more aggressive, to use the weapons and not be afraid to
:32:26. > :32:28.come forward. All those things but I also believe it's mentally. Paul's
:32:29. > :32:34.been with some of the great champions of all time. Just little
:32:35. > :32:37.things that he can say to him before matches, the night before, even one
:32:38. > :32:45.like Stan Wawrinka, they have doubts and we have seen this, he has doubts
:32:46. > :32:49.on grass. I think Paul in some ways, Magnus was never a grass court
:32:50. > :32:52.player, I think they've brought him in to give extra expertise on this
:32:53. > :32:58.surface. I think it's a very good move. It seems to be the done thing
:32:59. > :33:03.now. You bring in someone, even if it's on a part-time basis, but it is
:33:04. > :33:05.important that it is almost like a sponge, you absorb information that
:33:06. > :33:09.you can get from these players. Absolutely. Again a lot of people
:33:10. > :33:11.don't realise, they see these players and they look calm and you
:33:12. > :33:16.think they don't get nervous. They do. Even the great ones get nervous
:33:17. > :33:20.and to have someone in your camp that's been there and done it as a
:33:21. > :33:23.coach or player adds that extra little dimension, the difference
:33:24. > :33:29.between a couple of points here and there, it can make the difference of
:33:30. > :33:34.winning or losing. Thanks. John has said Lopez the favourite. We have
:33:35. > :33:43.already seen Milos Raonic go out. Andy Murray is next on court and he
:33:44. > :33:47.will be facing Jordan Thompson, not Aljaz Bedene. He is out with an
:33:48. > :33:55.injury. John is on his way now to join Andrew.
:33:56. > :34:06.Sue, thank very much. With all the matches Lopez had in Stuttgart,
:34:07. > :34:11.three 3-set victories those were all in three sets before losing in the
:34:12. > :34:14.final. This match has had matches. He has had wins and has had success.
:34:15. > :34:19.Stan Wawrinka has been having success on the clay but it's nothing
:34:20. > :34:27.like this surface. The first 20, 25 minutes or so are going to be
:34:28. > :34:29.interesting to see if there is a honeymoon period for Wawrinka on
:34:30. > :34:39.this surface. Quite an intriguing match.
:34:40. > :34:42.Temperature is 30 degrees. Well up into the 80s here in west London.
:34:43. > :34:46.Everyone settling in. The third Match of the Day. Murray to come.
:34:47. > :34:56.But a corker coming up here. Maybe.
:34:57. > :35:08.It's almost as though Wawrinka just needs to get a feel for how dominant
:35:09. > :35:14.he could be on this surface. And get comfortable with that and settle
:35:15. > :35:18.into it. Because he does have a powerful first serve. That one
:35:19. > :35:35.coming in at 132mph. He has his Wimbledon whites out
:35:36. > :35:44.already. Some players going for that look, even now. You are allowed to
:35:45. > :35:49.wear coloured clothing here. A tidy start.
:35:50. > :35:59.Somebody like Wawrinka and Lopez, they'll have a new suitcase worth of
:36:00. > :36:07.equipment delivered. New frames. New rackets. Certainly new tensions in
:36:08. > :36:15.the strings for a different surface. Yes, I always strung my rackets
:36:16. > :36:25.looser on grass, just because you would get those mis-hits. Not sure
:36:26. > :36:28.if that's the way most players do. So you thought an off centre hit,
:36:29. > :36:35.you are more likely to get on the grass courts of old, you would
:36:36. > :36:39.prefer a slacker racket? Also because you have so many bad bounces
:36:40. > :36:46.back in the day. You couldn't take a long swing at the ball. By stringing
:36:47. > :36:54.the rackets looser you could get more power with a shorter swing.
:36:55. > :37:02.Wow. 131mph. Up and almost hit the ball girl back there. She will need
:37:03. > :38:04.to pay attention. The return, the chipped return deep
:38:05. > :38:06.was something that Paul was talking about this morning. Nullify your
:38:07. > :38:15.opponent but make it firm. You can't just drop it in the middle of the
:38:16. > :38:17.court. He will have been pleased with what he saw there from
:38:18. > :38:35.Wawrinka. That's really strong. That's a solid
:38:36. > :38:56.return on a grass court. Former coach to Federer, Sampras,
:38:57. > :38:59.Henman. Came out of Tennessee University, quarter-final of
:39:00. > :39:23.Wimbledon that year, 1984. He came as the number one college
:39:24. > :39:29.ranked player, he was a real star, had a fine career himself. He came
:39:30. > :39:35.to Wichita because that was the mecca of college tennis, that was
:39:36. > :39:42.where everyone wanted to go! East coast, West Coast superiority you
:39:43. > :39:45.have got, because you only ever flew over Kansas!
:39:46. > :40:15.It's boiling hot here! 36 degrees. 65 plus 32... This will take all
:40:16. > :40:22.night! Take away the... About 94, something like that, in the sun, of
:40:23. > :40:26.course. Take away the square root of the length of the grass... 97.
:40:27. > :40:33.The car park at the back where they have metal grating on the floor got
:40:34. > :40:40.to 43 degrees yesterday. A nice tan on the net from the
:40:41. > :41:58.reflection, so it's all worth it. Getting the ball very cleanly, both
:41:59. > :42:02.players hitting the ball cleanly. Impressed with Wawrinka so far. No
:42:03. > :42:08.breaks of serve. Andy Murray coming up later. We will look forward to
:42:09. > :42:12.that. We have already seen a shock today really with Kokkinakis beating
:42:13. > :42:18.Milos Raonic. Spare a thought as the temperatures push up to the mid 30s
:42:19. > :42:26.and beyond, for the security gentlemen at the side of the court
:42:27. > :42:28.here, wearing a heavy dark suit. Neatly done up tie. Right to the
:42:29. > :42:56.top. That must be a size 20 I agree, it's quite comfortable,
:42:57. > :43:05.certainly what they're used to. However, the sun is hot. If this
:43:06. > :43:10.match goes into the two-and-a-half, three-hour range, then guys will
:43:11. > :43:19.struggle. Not too much humidity compared to some places they play.
:43:20. > :43:23.Exactly. The grass court tennis I think is more onerous on players in
:43:24. > :43:31.the regard they have to bend their knees more. The ball stays lower. To
:43:32. > :43:39.move properly on this surface you do have to get down. The rallies are so
:43:40. > :43:43.short I don't think we are going to see many guys struggling
:43:44. > :44:07.stamina-wise. Some great news actually for British
:44:08. > :44:19.tennis today, specifically for Liam Brody who had a good result here in
:44:20. > :44:26.the qualifying. He beat an American player in the first round. He is
:44:27. > :44:34.going to get into the draw as a lucky loser.
:44:35. > :44:47.He is going to be playing Jeremy Chardy later on.
:44:48. > :44:55.So Herbert, who was a lucky loser himself, which is the highest ranked
:44:56. > :44:59.person who lost in the final round of qualifying, it's getting to the
:45:00. > :45:03.point now, three lucky losers, so if you won one round in qualifying you
:45:04. > :45:05.were virtually assured a place in the main draw, as it turns out.
:45:06. > :45:21.Anyway, Brody is in, which is good. We are sitting near that side line,
:45:22. > :45:27.that looked like it was worth a challenge.
:45:28. > :46:01.This is why he is an horrific draw. Wonderful record. Four Davis Cup
:46:02. > :46:07.finals. 13 years in the top 50 consistently.
:46:08. > :46:21.Thank you very much! Two wins on the grass courts in Eastbourne. . So
:46:22. > :46:28.comfortable on the grass. Has had the same coach for a while. Remember
:46:29. > :46:35.that match the final here in 2014 I believe it was, I am certain he had
:46:36. > :46:39.a match point against Dimitrov. Ultimately losing that in three
:46:40. > :47:00.tie-breaks. He also beat raffle Nadal here in
:47:01. > :47:10.2010. So that's the pedestrian Gray. I like it when he holds the finish.
:47:11. > :47:40.A statuesque tennis player. There is a bit of glamour about Lopez.
:47:41. > :47:48.Yeah, he clearly looks after his body very well. Still gets around
:47:49. > :48:32.the court beautifully aged 35. His forehand side is the weakest.
:48:33. > :48:35.Will miss on that side where he can go a whole match without missing on
:48:36. > :48:40.the backhand, as long as he doesn't come over the backhand. It's a
:48:41. > :48:46.sliced backhand which is his strength.
:48:47. > :48:54.So no breaks of serve. Pretty intriguing match. Just under a
:48:55. > :48:59.quarter of April hour played. Round one with Stan Wawrinka 3-2 up on
:49:00. > :49:02.Feliciano Lopez. STUDIO: We will be back with this
:49:03. > :49:10.match. A couple of results to bring you. A big upset here, Thanasi
:49:11. > :49:14.Kokkinakis has put out Milos Raonic, last year's runner-up. He has had 18
:49:15. > :49:19.months out with a variety of injuries and needed a wildcard to
:49:20. > :49:23.come back. He was such a talented player a couple of years ago. It's
:49:24. > :49:26.great to see him back at his best. Worrying times for Milos Raonic.
:49:27. > :49:31.Finalist here and at Wimbledon. He looked out of sorts. Far too many
:49:32. > :49:35.errors. Well, he may need to play down at Eastbourne to get match
:49:36. > :49:45.play. But this young man, wonderful celebration from him and well
:49:46. > :49:50.deserved. On court number one Julian Benneteau has put out James Ward of
:49:51. > :49:53.Great Britain. Ward took a while away from the tour. He was beaten
:49:54. > :50:00.soundly. It's great to see James back on a tennis court. We wish him
:50:01. > :50:05.well. Just too good, Julian Benneteau today. We are watching
:50:06. > :50:09.Stan Wawrinka at the moment. Andy Murray will be next on court, he
:50:10. > :50:12.will be playing Jordan Thompson because Bedene has been forced to
:50:13. > :50:17.withdraw with a wrist injury. But the defending champion will be on
:50:18. > :50:30.Centre Court this afternoon. A couple of quick results from
:50:31. > :50:41.Edgbaston. Johanna Konta has gone through.
:50:42. > :50:47.Sue, thank you for the round-up and the update. No breaks here. First
:50:48. > :51:27.round match. As we get ready to enjoy Andy Murray
:51:28. > :51:30.after this match, news emerging this morning that he is going to donate
:51:31. > :51:34.his winnings from this championship to the families of the victims of
:51:35. > :51:39.the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy which took place no more than two
:51:40. > :51:44.miles away from here. Good for him. Yeah.
:51:45. > :52:02.First prize here, he has won it five times, first prize is ?350,000.
:52:03. > :52:09.In fact, at the French Open when he finished one of the matches, the
:52:10. > :52:13.first thing he said was about the London Bridge and Borough Market
:52:14. > :52:18.Tower attacks, he was quick to talk about that. He has become a fine
:52:19. > :52:23.spokesman for all these issues, showing he is not just thinking
:52:24. > :52:38.about tennis, it's been good to watch.
:52:39. > :52:48.Lopez is so much more solid off the ground than he ever has been in his
:52:49. > :52:55.career. Aged 35 and he hits the ball better than he ever has. I suppose
:52:56. > :53:01.there's nothing unusual about that. Guys always improve their shots as
:53:02. > :54:41.they go on. The problem becomes just getting to the ball! No doubt.
:54:42. > :54:48.UMPIRE: New balls, please. Somebody has just walked past the commentary
:54:49. > :54:53.box with a whole load of iced coffees. That would be nice,
:54:54. > :55:04.wouldn't it? You are and American, you would like an iced coffee? In
:55:05. > :55:09.fact, they might have been Baileys. Yeah, that makes more sense! It
:55:10. > :55:14.would also be most welcome. A stretchy band there to loosen off
:55:15. > :55:17.the hip flex or perhaps warm the tendon up in the knee? That's
:55:18. > :55:24.unusual to see that being mobilised in the middle of a match, Peter.
:55:25. > :55:35.Yeah, it is. Interesting. He must have some sort of a knee issue.
:55:36. > :55:42.Because it's not the sort of thing that if you have... Tennis players
:55:43. > :55:48.ordinarily do so much strengthening of their quads and hip flexors.
:55:49. > :55:58.Usually if they're having an issue it's that those muscles are too
:55:59. > :56:01.strong, too tight. You really wouldn't want to try to strengthen
:56:02. > :56:22.them more. Towards the end of this first set
:56:23. > :56:23.now. Probably 6,000 people in this wonderful Centre Court at Queen's
:56:24. > :56:40.Club. Yeah six or seven was the capacity
:56:41. > :57:06.here previously. Really difficult serve, isn't it?
:57:07. > :57:12.Lopez is so effective with the slice out wide that if he gets the flat
:57:13. > :57:17.one working up the middle he is virtually unplayable. You almost

:01:27. > :01:33.contentedly right now. I miss last Wawrinka has maintained a nice calm,
:01:34. > :01:39.and held serve routinely every time. He hasn't got to upset by the fact
:01:40. > :01:47.he's not won a whole lot of return points. That's how you have to be,
:01:48. > :01:58.you have to be very easy going to do well on this surface.
:01:59. > :02:24.There have been 32 points played on the first serve and only three times
:02:25. > :02:43.has the receiver won the point. That was a very tidy game, just when
:02:44. > :02:53.the pressure might have been on, you would have thought. Just one minute,
:02:54. > :02:58.13 aces between these two. So we haven't had any periods of play, and
:02:59. > :03:12.the episodes of play where both have played well together yet, not
:03:13. > :03:18.really. Both just playing well. And what a difference in the pace of

:04:33. > :04:40.that one checked, and the slice backhand off low -- Lopez skidded
:04:41. > :04:45.through the court, so the Frink are not coming to terms with how the

:05:47. > :06:03.finds his range on this beautiful single-handed backhand. Looks pretty
:06:04. > :06:44.comfortable. That's not the short low wanted Wawrinka to settle on.
:06:45. > :06:55.Lovely play. Really superb volley, back behind Feliciano Lopez. Left
:06:56. > :07:03.with very few choices after that volley. That is a volley of
:07:04. > :07:22.know-how. Lopez forced him to work for that point.
:07:23. > :07:30.Strangely enough, these to haven't played since 2014, considering Lopez

:08:58. > :08:59.for an hour or so, then see you later, so we might get lucky this
:09:00. > :09:55.week. There is only one place that's
:09:56. > :10:30.going. Take cover! You can see Wawrinka working on this
:10:31. > :10:32.push, chip, shove, whatever it is. Naturally Roger Federer does it
:10:33. > :10:55.better than anyone in the game, I would say.
:10:56. > :11:06.The Lopez forehand does make some errors but it was -- it is the shot
:11:07. > :11:19.he likes to go after more than any other. Very aggressive. Tie-break it
:11:20. > :11:33.is. This was always on the cards, wasn't it? Absolutely, no break
:11:34. > :11:35.points in this first set. 36 minutes played, plenty of aces. High quality
:11:36. > :12:28.tennis, simple as that. It is a heavy second serve. You will
:12:29. > :12:34.see quicker speeds, but that's not everything. It's the way it comes
:12:35. > :12:42.off the surface, sliding. And Wawrinka tried to slice that, rather
:12:43. > :12:45.than just block it back. A far more difficult shot. There you go, there
:12:46. > :13:04.is some speed, 128 out wide. Wawrinka has won 18 out of the 19
:13:05. > :13:24.points when he got his first serve in. Very impressive so far.
:13:25. > :13:28.Just long and Lopez was in the rally, which will have delighted
:13:29. > :13:59.him. That's going to fall wide. Just
:14:00. > :14:06.fought for a moment Wawrinka might have over the backhand, after the
:14:07. > :14:10.slip. Yes, he did really well to recover so quickly. Very strong
:14:11. > :14:44.legs. That has been noted. Prowls around the court sometimes,
:14:45. > :14:53.Lopez. When he moves well, he moves even slower. It's been a first-class
:14:54. > :14:54.professional match in every regard so far, just very little given away
:14:55. > :15:18.by either player. Not quite... That was the moment of
:15:19. > :15:44.inspiration Wawrinka was looking for. As you say, he struck it well.
:15:45. > :16:01.UMPIRE: Mr Wawrinka has three challenges remaining.
:16:02. > :16:07.Now then, how about that? He misses the backhand crosscourt, but now the
:16:08. > :16:38.first double fault of the match. That was an unforced error from
:16:39. > :16:45.Lopez. Exactly right. Second serve, on his more favoured chip backhand,
:16:46. > :16:52.you would expect him to make the -- that most times. It does get just a
:16:53. > :17:05.little tight in these situations. So strong, 116 mph. He was not going
:17:06. > :17:33.to miss that first serve. Superb point. Excellent set of
:17:34. > :17:38.tennis as well. The Spanish are happy. Stand Wawrinka, the number
:17:39. > :17:48.two seed. He will have looked at this draw, known it was difficult,
:17:49. > :17:55.and it is. First set, Lopez. What a point to finish on, and
:17:56. > :17:59.incredible return, and what a shot from Feliciano Lopez. So the number
:18:00. > :18:05.two seed is in trouble out on the Centre Court, but Lopez, who moves
:18:06. > :18:10.so well around the court, wonderful improvisation there, and he is one
:18:11. > :18:14.set up against Stanislas Wawrinka. We have won three times Grand Slam

:19:23. > :19:28.number two seed to do right now. COMMENTATOR: Thank you. Yes, a lucky
:19:29. > :19:37.loser in Acapulco, Jordan Thompson, beating the man we are watching play

:20:11. > :20:15.week, that is Monday to Thursday. Also, the Eastbourne women's tennis
:20:16. > :20:20.on BBC television as well before the Championships begin, so there is a
:20:21. > :20:30.lot to look forward to. There is the thermometer here, soaring above 100
:20:31. > :20:35.degrees. Another boiling hot day, in this huge new stand at Queen's Club
:20:36. > :21:23.just serving to increase that sense of pressure.
:21:24. > :21:32.Another of those forehands, keeping his eye on the ball as he did. The
:21:33. > :21:52.last point went over his head. And that is the body serve which he
:21:53. > :21:57.plays for into the right-hander on the left side, so he's got three big
:21:58. > :22:05.serves down the middle on the left side into the body, and out wide.
:22:06. > :22:11.Just to illustrate the accuracy of Feliciano Lopez's serving in the
:22:12. > :22:15.first set, nine aces and no double faults. It is the direction and when
:22:16. > :22:22.you served them that is important. You can see the percentage of
:22:23. > :22:27.unreturned serves. A lot of balls in the green sections. And on the left
:22:28. > :23:57.more, into the body. When these guys are serving as
:23:58. > :24:02.powerfully as they are, it is difficult to get any purchase on the

:26:23. > :27:52.Unplayable. Wonderful demonstration of serving. Still no breaks. It is
:27:53. > :27:58.one set to Lopez and still in trouble here.
:27:59. > :28:09.SUE BARKER: He certainly is and we have already had one upset today

:28:33. > :28:36.How does this affect your preparations for Wimbledon? It is a

:33:37. > :33:40.And he has been playing with that left knee a bit. Then it'll feel
:33:41. > :33:46.worse playing Lopez and being down a set. Absolutely and if he does have
:33:47. > :33:54.any issue, the fact he will need to bend more on this surface just might
:33:55. > :33:59.exacerbate it. Players tend to get Patelia tendon issues when they come
:34:00. > :34:04.from the clay court to grass because you spend most of the time, just
:34:05. > :34:07.slightly more crouched. You have to use the knees for suspension a bit
:34:08. > :34:11.more, you have to live with it. Venus Williams has had that. In

:35:39. > :36:06.those has he hit over his career? Still looks like he has the appetite
:36:07. > :36:19.for the fight here. He just carved that one. What a
:36:20. > :37:11.beautiful volley. It is quite a late takeback, didn't
:37:12. > :37:13.he? Or he did that time. Sometimes on grass the ball just skids through
:37:14. > :37:30.and catches you out. The alarm bells must be ringing
:37:31. > :37:47.right now. Just slightly overplayed. He went
:37:48. > :37:52.behind Lopez which was the right thing to do. Yes it was a great
:37:53. > :37:57.first serve. Look at the return. Able it get it back to Wawrinka's

:43:31. > :43:38.He wouldn't mind having that one back. Yeah, just couldn't quite get

:43:58. > :44:21.Yeah, he had so much time to hit that ball. It was almost like - wh,

:46:07. > :46:13.37% of people start playing in local parks, tennis for free is a big deal
:46:14. > :46:20.nowadays, the LTA starting up with them, that was started by the
:46:21. > :46:22.comedian, Tony Hawkes, so a real push towards grassroots

:46:28. > :46:31.numbers, it is so difficult it get people playing sport now, isn't it?
:46:32. > :46:38.I suppose it is. Which is a shame, of course. Female participation in

:50:13. > :50:14.You can stand by for a pretty big announcement, I think probably next

:51:43. > :51:45.five-set victory over Andy Murray at the French Open, on the clay of
:51:46. > :51:49.Roland Garros and he made the final of the Australian Open, loss to

:52:26. > :52:32.In slams, Wawrinka is 4-4 against number 1s in the world. Outside of
:52:33. > :52:37.slams he is 0-16. Is that right? So he gets inspired on the bigger
:52:38. > :52:44.stages? Yeah. Not a bad trait. No question about that. When he retires
:52:45. > :52:50.people will say - you were good when it mattered most. He has been
:52:51. > :52:55.Olympic gold medal as well with Federer from Beijing in the doubles.
:52:56. > :53:01.It was when he took nag news Norm on as a coach in Portugal. He lost the

:53:26. > :53:40.the ages of 28-32. What a great coach Magnus Norman is.
:53:41. > :53:49.He had all that success with Soderling, prior to Wawrinka.
:53:50. > :53:57.Soderling a French Open finalist. Yes, if you can coach somebody to a
:53:58. > :54:00.victory over Nadal at the French Open, really a massive achievement.
:54:01. > :54:34.Only two people have achieved it. Terrific half-volley lob, to no
:54:35. > :56:02.avail. Oh-oh. Ordinarily that's one of his
:56:03. > :56:05.favourite second serves, the kicker out wide. Of course, it went into
:56:06. > :57:52.Lopez's forehand. That's quite testing of the knee,
:57:53. > :57:53.isn't it? Pushing off to come low and forward for Wawrinka. Smart
:57:54. > :58:05.play. Yeah, but curious tactic from
:58:06. > :59:03.Wawrinka, again kicking the second serve out to Lopez's forehand. #r
:59:04. > :59:10.5-5, second set and some pressure resisted.
:59:11. > :00:12.As you mentioned earlier, Andrew, it's the first serves that come on
:00:13. > :00:16.to Wawrinka's racket that he needs to put into play more often.
:00:17. > :00:23.Because, of course, he is going to be aced.
:00:24. > :00:28.He doesn't put the ones he can reach back into play. He is just not going
:00:29. > :00:43.to break too often. He is struggling to move, Wawrinka,
:00:44. > :00:50.at the back of the court. Certainly didn't move up well to drop shot in
:00:51. > :01:01.the previous game. This one nowhere near, well inside the court here,
:01:02. > :01:04.Lopez. And that is a frustration for Wawrinka as he sees another one
:01:05. > :01:14.disappear past him, but he's hanging in. Lopez is bringing his form
:01:15. > :01:24.straight onto the grass here. Incidentally the other player to
:01:25. > :01:37.beat Rafael Nadal at the US Open was Novak Djokovic. So two weeks away
:01:38. > :01:42.from the next Grand Slam, Wimbledon. Andy Murray will be defending once
:01:43. > :01:49.again the title he won last year with the victory over Milos Raonic.
:01:50. > :01:54.Andy Murray next on court here. That match eagerly anticipated, the
:01:55. > :01:58.return of arguably Britain's finest sportsmen to this arena where he has
:01:59. > :02:07.enjoyed so much success himself, with five championships, and two
:02:08. > :02:14.Wimbledons and the Olympic gold. And Davis Cup victories as well. He said
:02:15. > :02:16.the other day, I have only got a couple of years left may be at the
:02:17. > :02:26.top, Nick Kyrgios came out straightaway and said "Bluffing!".
:02:27. > :02:31.I'm sure he would love to play another five or six years, but
:02:32. > :02:37.sometimes your body does not obey. And of course on those serial
:02:38. > :02:43.winners enjoyed playing once the skills start to wane, once they
:02:44. > :02:48.start to lose more often. It just becomes no fun at all. So that's the
:02:49. > :02:56.challenge, to see if he can stay fit and healthy for as long as possible.
:02:57. > :03:06.Maybe he can take some lessons from Roger Federer because what a master
:03:07. > :03:07.he is at remaining healthy, seemingly in the best shape of his
:03:08. > :03:36.life. Can you understand why he's hitting
:03:37. > :03:44.that serve so often? And punished on it numerous times.
:03:45. > :03:50.Maybe that heavy weighted slice backhand from Lopez is wearing him
:03:51. > :03:58.down, he's getting chiselled down by that. Like that one. You know you
:03:59. > :04:04.are definitely going to have to play the ball and it's likely to be
:04:05. > :04:10.difficult, against Lopez's backhand side. Two points from defeat here,
:04:11. > :04:27.Wawrinka. That's a great play. And it is a
:04:28. > :04:34.play that we have seen him use over the years on any surface, but it can
:04:35. > :04:49.be very effective on a regular basis against a guy like Lopez.
:04:50. > :04:56.This time Lopez elects to go right at his opponents, and Andy Murray
:04:57. > :05:04.could be on court within 15 minutes or so because that piercing passing
:05:05. > :05:19.shot right at Wawrinka has brought up much point. -- match point.
:05:20. > :05:30.UMPIRE: Game, set and match, Lopez. It is the second big shock on Dave
:05:31. > :05:36.two at the Queen's Club, great fortune for Lopez, and the first
:05:37. > :05:40.break of serve brings the match. The number two seed is out, as well as
:05:41. > :05:45.the number three seed earlier in the day. We thought it was going to be a
:05:46. > :05:52.very difficult proposition for Stanislas Wawrinka, coming into this
:05:53. > :05:56.match with Feliciano Lopez in great form, certainly with great grass
:05:57. > :06:00.court pedigree, and we most certainly were right. Lopez played
:06:01. > :06:05.his part, Wawrinka suffering perhaps a little bit with that neat and in
:06:06. > :06:07.the end it was all about the Spaniard. -- suffering with his
:06:08. > :06:19.knee. That was a good effort from
:06:20. > :06:25.Stanislas Wawrinka. Clearly there is a bit of an issue with his left
:06:26. > :06:34.knee. He was exercising that throughout the course of the match.
:06:35. > :06:40.Tiny margins. It was that net call from Lopez, the chip return that
:06:41. > :06:44.brought the break. He's free to soak up the sunshine and the adulation
:06:45. > :06:48.here and we will have a word with him in just a second. Andy Murray
:06:49. > :06:54.will be going through his final few moments of preparation as he returns
:06:55. > :06:58.to British soil. And what a year of tennis in London he enjoyed last
:06:59. > :07:06.year by winning the ATP Tour finals at the O2, as well as winning this
:07:07. > :07:10.title and the Championships themselves at Wimbledon. So Jordan
:07:11. > :07:17.Thompson, the Australian with the chance of having a go at Andy
:07:18. > :07:23.Murray. So Feliciano Lopez has put out Stanislas Wawrinka. Let's get
:07:24. > :07:27.the Spaniard's thoughts now. He's with John Inverdale.
:07:28. > :07:31.Many congratulations, that was a tremendous performance and you are
:07:32. > :07:36.playing really well at the moment, aren't you? Yes, last week was a
:07:37. > :07:41.great week for me. I reached the finals in Stuttgart. Even though I
:07:42. > :07:46.lost the match, I played well the whole week so I came here with a lot
:07:47. > :07:50.of confidence. Tennis is about confidence and right now I'm playing
:07:51. > :07:55.well. I knew it would be tough against Stanislas because he is one
:07:56. > :07:58.of the greatest players in the world. What is it about tennis
:07:59. > :08:08.players in the men's game at the moment in the mid-30s, they are
:08:09. > :08:13.almost on -- unbeatable. Nearly 40 now! I can be considered one of the
:08:14. > :08:17.oldest guys on the tour right now but I feel healthy and competitive
:08:18. > :08:22.to go for a little bit more. Do you think you are better player now than
:08:23. > :08:26.when you first came here a decade ago? Probably because I know the
:08:27. > :08:31.game better, I read the game better, and I know myself also better. I
:08:32. > :08:36.know the way I have to play and this is something you achieve with the
:08:37. > :08:40.years, playing tennis, and this is something very important. Experience
:08:41. > :08:49.means a lot in the game. You got to the final three years ago, do you
:08:50. > :08:52.think you can replicate that this year and maybe go one better? I hope
:08:53. > :08:54.so, it is one of my favourite tournaments to play in front of this
:08:55. > :08:59.beautiful crowd, it is so special for me. It would be great to reach
:09:00. > :09:03.the final but still a long way to go there. It is great to see you back,
:09:04. > :09:10.congratulations. SUE BARKER: He certainly played a
:09:11. > :09:16.great match. Probably not the way Stanislas would have wanted that to
:09:17. > :09:21.end, not for Feliciano Lopez either, but a win is a win and he played the
:09:22. > :09:25.match so well. A wonderful deft touch, so many wonderful disguised
:09:26. > :09:30.shots, great slice and he really knows his way around the grass
:09:31. > :09:36.courts. No great surprise he has caused another big shock here today.
:09:37. > :09:43.Feliciano Lopez is putting out Stanislas Wawrinka. So it is the
:09:44. > :09:51.second upset of the day because earlier Milos Raonic went out, he
:09:52. > :09:56.was beaten in two tie-breaks by Kokkinakis. He made his way back
:09:57. > :10:00.after injuries, but he was such a talent and it's great to see him
:10:01. > :10:08.back. So many people talking about him as one of the big future stars.
:10:09. > :10:14.So Kokkinakis putting out Milos Raonic, and Luciano Lowe as putting
:10:15. > :10:17.out Stanislas Wawrinka. He loves entertaining and he really did
:10:18. > :10:23.entertain the fans out on Queen's Centre Court today. So we have had
:10:24. > :10:27.two big upsets and will we have a third? Because the next is Andy
:10:28. > :10:33.Murray against Jordan Thompson. First let's reflect on what we have
:10:34. > :10:39.seen. This policy are no Lopez makes the game look so easy, the disguise
:10:40. > :10:44.he puts on shots. When you watch him play in a match like that, we say if
:10:45. > :10:50.grass was consistent through the whole year he would be top ten. This
:10:51. > :10:54.surface is made for him. His serve is a joke how good it is, not as
:10:55. > :10:58.powerful as some of the big hitters but the way he manoeuvres it, and he
:10:59. > :11:04.said in the interview he is serving better, he knows what to do with it.
:11:05. > :11:09.Over the years he has realised it is all about placement and his
:11:10. > :11:14.fantastic on this surface. So effective that serve. Interesting
:11:15. > :11:18.with Wawrinka he was flexing mini but movement seems to be his issue
:11:19. > :11:24.on this surface, it is the only surface he hasn't conquered. I
:11:25. > :11:43.cannot imagine a worse drawer for him, is coming off world-class form
:11:44. > :11:51.last week. Lopez misses nothing. You can see that's where it happened and
:11:52. > :11:54.this is such and forgiving surface -- and unforgiving surface. After
:11:55. > :12:00.playing on the clay, to get down to the ball, you have to spend more
:12:01. > :12:04.time getting down low. It is difficult, whether it is the
:12:05. > :12:08.adjustment to the grass or it accumulated through the clay court
:12:09. > :12:17.season, who knows. Another one we will stick on the train to
:12:18. > :12:22.Eastbourne. Milos said he's not going. Whether you can create a
:12:23. > :12:26.match situation on the practice court... He probably needs a rest
:12:27. > :12:31.more than anything else. We saw his partner in Nottingham last week as
:12:32. > :12:35.well so they've enjoyed some great success. He was committed to playing
:12:36. > :12:48.here, and committed to it when he walked out on court. I love how
:12:49. > :12:53.Feliciano described it as like playing on a carpet! It's wonderful
:12:54. > :12:58.how he can produce so many great shots which are effective on this
:12:59. > :13:06.court. And when you are really good crosscourt player, this into her
:13:07. > :13:15.plenty of time on the ball -- grass court player. He did an ace but it
:13:16. > :13:20.opens up the court and that is brilliant. And how he moves forward
:13:21. > :13:26.all the time, he's always looking to disguise that shot. You cannot read
:13:27. > :13:31.that, can you? He knows when to come in, when players are stretching for
:13:32. > :13:35.the ball, he has that deft drop shot when he needs it. He's just an
:13:36. > :13:45.all-round fabulous grass court player. Uses his game. That is
:13:46. > :13:50.something... Who is this? A lot of people have left the stands to get
:13:51. > :13:55.some shade, they will be coming back now as the applause rings out, Andy
:13:56. > :13:58.Murray coming onslaught against Jordan Thompson of Australia and
:13:59. > :14:06.they will be hoping he studies the ship after these big upsets. We
:14:07. > :14:10.wouldn't mind seeing a good match, Jordan Thompson knows his way around
:14:11. > :14:14.a grass court and can play well so it's not a straightforward match to
:14:15. > :14:19.play, new surface but you are talking about someone who has won
:14:20. > :14:26.Wimbledon two of the last four years. And this tournament just the
:14:27. > :14:32.five times! He steps onto this court so different. It was 2005 when we
:14:33. > :14:37.first saw him, gangly thing, and we think about how his life has altered
:14:38. > :14:44.unchanged over the years and watched his development... How his body has
:14:45. > :14:46.changed the years. Who was such a fledgling, now absolutely the
:14:47. > :14:52.finished article and we should enjoy every minute of him because he's an
:14:53. > :14:58.unbelievable player. As a man, to watch that development from boy to
:14:59. > :15:02.man has been brilliant. He's now a real spokesman. On any issue he will
:15:03. > :15:08.give you an intelligent comment on it now, and that includes this prize
:15:09. > :15:18.money donation. Yes, the Grenfell Tower fund. All of his money going
:15:19. > :15:29.to that. And that could be 350,000. Very good he has done that. And this
:15:30. > :15:33.match... He certainly knows his way around the grass court, and for Andy
:15:34. > :15:37.Murray this is a new opponent because he expected to see Aljaz
:15:38. > :15:46.Bedene of Great Britain who pulled out because of a wrist injury, but
:15:47. > :15:51.this guy has beaten David Ferrer, Jack Sock, and he will not be
:15:52. > :15:54.intimidated. I'm not sure how much Andy Murray knows about his
:15:55. > :15:58.opponent. He will know he's a good player but this is where they will
:15:59. > :16:01.have done the scouting and had to readjust because the game plan would
:16:02. > :16:06.have been for a different player, now they have got to readjust. The
:16:07. > :16:11.thing with Andy Murray is it's what he brings on court, his presence. If
:16:12. > :16:14.you are going to get him in a tournament, today is the day in the
:16:15. > :16:20.first round when he's feeling his way on the grass. I shouldn't say
:16:21. > :16:24.that after the two upsets, we don't want another one, but this is the
:16:25. > :16:30.time to get him because once he gets into his groove, he's majestic. What
:16:31. > :16:37.do we think of the red, white and blue? Sensational. I think the
:16:38. > :16:41.shorts will make it through to Wimbledon. Definitely not
:16:42. > :16:47.predominantly white top but he looks the part in every way. Off the
:16:48. > :16:53.court, we don't always have cameras, but the preparation and totality of
:16:54. > :16:56.it and the thoroughness of it. You don't get to world number one
:16:57. > :17:01.without putting in the work and he demonstrates that every time he
:17:02. > :17:06.walks on court. It is a tough ask to walk on court against him and think
:17:07. > :17:12.you will beat him so it will be intimidating for Jordan Thompson. He
:17:13. > :17:17.came here and won his title, then went on to win Wimbledon. He had an
:17:18. > :17:23.incredible close to the season and finishing as world number ones which
:17:24. > :17:27.is something he always dream about. 2017, it hasn't happened for him. He
:17:28. > :17:33.has had shingles injuries as well and that is why his results haven't
:17:34. > :17:42.really been up to it yet. Yes, runner-up in Doha, the Australian
:17:43. > :17:51.Open he didn't really get anything going there, fourth round. We are
:17:52. > :17:58.used to seeing win, win, win down the right-hand side. He played an
:17:59. > :18:03.excellent match against Stanislas Wawrinka and that was readmission.
:18:04. > :18:08.Because he was unwell, especially when there is a youngster in the
:18:09. > :18:13.house, you do catch everything! Little Sofia, we are not blaming
:18:14. > :18:18.her, but you do change, adjustments happen. A quietly difficult, bumpy
:18:19. > :18:23.six months is now out of the way. You can understand it because of the
:18:24. > :18:26.amount of effort he put in playing every tournament because he had the
:18:27. > :18:35.goal of being world number one and it takes it out of you. Then he goes
:18:36. > :18:41.on and has a really hard training session with Ivan Lendl. It is
:18:42. > :18:46.understandable the body can break down. You won't be the first or the
:18:47. > :18:51.last player who has reached number one and had this great year, and for
:18:52. > :18:55.the next year mentally they are just not... It is not that the hunger is
:18:56. > :19:02.not there but they are physically and mentally tired. The work ethic
:19:03. > :19:08.he put in, it takes its toll, then you throw in the illnesses, which
:19:09. > :19:12.may be came because physically he was not quite 100%, and now he has
:19:13. > :19:17.opened up and the French Open to me was the first time we have seen Andy
:19:18. > :19:24.Murray of last year. That's why I make him the favourite for Wimbledon
:19:25. > :19:28.because he is black to his best, very close to beating Stanislas
:19:29. > :19:34.Wawrinka at the French. His preparation will be perfect and I
:19:35. > :19:42.make him favourite for Wimbledon. He has got a lot of points to defend.
:19:43. > :19:48.When you look at the stats, unbeaten in 14 matches on the grass, unbeaten
:19:49. > :19:53.in 17 matches in London, he can just drive home and he's comfortable
:19:54. > :19:57.here. You know he produces his best. We used to talk about how it was a
:19:58. > :20:02.pressure filled situation for British players to play at home but
:20:03. > :20:06.he's well beyond that and it was the final at Wimbledon where he lost and
:20:07. > :20:12.threw off the yoke I think, when he did the interview with you keep
:20:13. > :20:17.showed that emotion. That was such a big moment, everyone fell in love
:20:18. > :20:24.with him, rightly so. Then he won the Olympic gold and he changed.
:20:25. > :20:29.It's interesting, I'm going to do a documentary and I spoke to Andy, he
:20:30. > :20:34.said after that final at Wimbledon he doubted himself and if he would
:20:35. > :20:38.ever win a Grand Slam. What a reaction to beat Roger Federer on
:20:39. > :20:42.the same court a few weeks later in the Olympics, then go on to win the
:20:43. > :20:48.US Open. It just shows you how much of this game is in the mind. It
:20:49. > :20:53.wasn't great then, it was pretty good! But he had doubts over whether
:20:54. > :21:02.he would win a Grand Slam, then Ivan Lendl came along and helped
:21:03. > :21:07.big-time. He also lost four Grand Slams in a row before he won one so
:21:08. > :21:11.he had been there and done that and I think he was a huge instrument in
:21:12. > :21:16.him getting the monkey off his back and winning the first Grand Slam.
:21:17. > :21:22.Now he thinks he can win any time he wants. Absolutely, a great team he
:21:23. > :21:27.has in place. For Jordan Thompson it is tough to come in and do this but
:21:28. > :21:38.he has proven himself. He has come in as unlucky loser, but he won't be
:21:39. > :21:42.an easy opponent. The first match on grass is always tricky. Anyone in
:21:43. > :21:49.the top 100 in the world knows how to play the game, he has won plenty
:21:50. > :21:57.of challenges as well. Started off well in Australia at the start of
:21:58. > :22:02.the year. He is outmatched here but he might just get inspired. This is
:22:03. > :22:08.a surface he knows about, he can move on this surface. Maybe if he
:22:09. > :22:18.can take a set or make a quick start, as John Lloyd was saying, the
:22:19. > :22:26.opportunity is there. Also, he has beaten Shapovalov, and he put out
:22:27. > :22:31.Kyle Edmund. If you are going to put out a high ranked player, you want
:22:32. > :22:36.to put them out in the first round or two. You never know, Andy might
:22:37. > :22:43.start slowly but I doubt it! John has made his way to the
:22:44. > :22:46.commentary box to join Andrew. COMMENTATOR: A glorious day here,
:22:47. > :22:51.and it might not be the opponent Andy Murray was expecting to face
:22:52. > :22:54.but for many today, and it is just about capacity now, it was never
:22:55. > :23:00.really about the opponent, it is about seeing the Wimbledon, Olympic
:23:01. > :23:05.champion. A real shame for Aljaz Bedene that he couldn't be part of
:23:06. > :23:16.it but a real opportunity for Jordan Thompson now. Just a couple of hours
:23:17. > :23:20.ago, perhaps more than that, he was still a losing qualifier, now a
:23:21. > :23:24.lucky loser facing the champion, going for his sixth title at the
:23:25. > :23:33.Queen's, and it will be for Jordan Thompson to get us going.
:23:34. > :23:40.If there is any time to play Andy Murray, it's already been pointed
:23:41. > :23:42.out it might be in the first round at Queen's, just when he's getting
:23:43. > :24:43.used to things a little bit. You won't see a better defensive lob
:24:44. > :26:37.than that this week, I will tell you right now. Brilliant.
:26:38. > :26:56.So, a settler for Jordan Thompson, up and running here. His coach, says
:26:57. > :27:03.Tyson -- Des Tyson. A decent enough player back in the 1980s. A rather
:27:04. > :28:44.empty support box for Thompson than Andy Murray, who has a full house.
:28:45. > :28:58.Brilliant. I think the theory here from Andy Murray was to hit straight
:28:59. > :29:04.down the middle so his opponent wouldn't get any angle. Well, he
:29:05. > :29:07.found an angle. Excellent passing shot from Thompson. He certainly
:29:08. > :29:18.embracing this, doesn't look nervous at all.
:29:19. > :29:25.Just a couple of wild early ones from Murray, and facing a couple of
:29:26. > :31:08.break points. Excellent technique on that volley.
:31:09. > :31:15.That was a very tough shot. Forehand dipping so low. Not only did he get
:31:16. > :32:23.it well but he managed to redirect it so deep.
:32:24. > :33:33.That's unusual. Didn't really commit to that backhand, middle of the net.
:33:34. > :33:40.He is making heavy weather of this. Another opportunity for Jordon
:33:41. > :33:46.Thompson. Two strange errors from Murray. You don't see that very
:33:47. > :34:11.often. One in the middle of the net and the next, about eight feet long.
:34:12. > :34:20.Frustration for Thompson. A real opportunity on second serves. That
:34:21. > :34:24.is That's a good sign for Murray on the second serve. The previous
:34:25. > :34:28.couple were 80 miles per hour. Pretty slow. That was break point
:34:29. > :35:16.down and he hit it at 99 miles per hour. Good pace.
:35:17. > :35:26.A wild swipe and worry saw it out veriually. -- and Murray saw it out
:35:27. > :35:30.eventually. With you we have seen him before, sometimes he can be a
:35:31. > :35:46.slow start in the grass court season and then he gets better and beaten.
:35:47. > :35:57.He is unbeaten in 17 matches. David O'Leary is quite often here
:35:58. > :36:42.watching. Not sure he's part of Thompson's coaching set up.
:36:43. > :37:05.He settled into things quite quickly, Thompson.
:37:06. > :37:17.Beautifully done. Beautifully done. The young man from Sydney, just
:37:18. > :37:22.feeling something there. A brilliant point. Defended so well there. He
:37:23. > :37:30.saw Murray come in. Dropped it as low as he could, but he still had a
:37:31. > :37:33.lot of work to do and flipped that topspin lob over the back of the
:37:34. > :38:23.ball there. Good disguise. Not that many people has as much
:38:24. > :39:08.grass practice under his feet this season.
:39:09. > :39:39.Up over 130 miles per hour for his first ace.
:39:40. > :39:51.Well-played. Well-played indeed Jordan Thompson, another hold of
:39:52. > :39:56.serve.m you ary just briefly looks a bit exasperated -- Murray. He might
:39:57. > :40:02.not know too much about Jordan Thompson. He we'll fill you in. 90th
:40:03. > :40:17.in the world at the moment. He had a decent run in Brisbane where he
:40:18. > :40:21.reached the quarter-final, and he got through to the second round of
:40:22. > :40:25.the Australian Open where he lost in four sets to Dominic Thiem. We
:40:26. > :40:30.mentioned he played the challenger event in Surbiton a couple of weeks
:40:31. > :40:39.ago and reached the final. He lost to a Japanese player. He beat Dustin
:40:40. > :40:45.Brown on the way. He has games. He is at that level where he is just
:40:46. > :40:49.below getting regular ATP events. He plays a bit of challenger stuff as
:40:50. > :40:53.well. So he is mixing and matching. A level certainly way below Andy
:40:54. > :40:58.miles per houry. Not a bad time to play him. When you come in as a
:40:59. > :41:03.lucky lose anticipate you don't know this morning you are playing, you
:41:04. > :41:07.think - what do I have to lose? Exactly. He is a tidy player. He
:41:08. > :41:10.does everything well. Looking at his ground strokes, not a huge weapon on
:41:11. > :41:18.both sides but he makes a lot of balls. His serve is a good, solid
:41:19. > :41:24.serve. We saw one at 130. He is not afraid to come in. Moves well. He is
:41:25. > :41:27.a solid player. He doesn't look in anyway intimidated by who he's
:41:28. > :41:31.playing which sometimes can be difficult in playing in a stadium
:41:32. > :41:36.like this. He is not used to doing that very often. He has played Davis
:41:37. > :41:41.Cup for Australia, which is pretty intimidating in any sort of arena
:41:42. > :41:43.but he is doing very well so far. Andy Murray just not quite there yet
:41:44. > :42:21.but feeling his way into the match. That's twice now he has done that,
:42:22. > :42:26.which is not a tactic you see many players do against Andy Murray but
:42:27. > :42:28.when an 85 miles per hour serve comes in like that and sort of sits,
:42:29. > :43:57.sits up, why not. Well, the anticipation there and the
:43:58. > :44:09.rally. 37 shots, the longest rally of the
:44:10. > :44:16.match. The longest rally of queences, probably in the history of
:44:17. > :44:17.tennis. On grass. Slightly longer than what we saw in the Raonic
:44:18. > :46:00.Kokkinakis match. Instant challenge from Murray. He
:46:01. > :46:03.thinks this is an ace. At least he hopes it is.
:46:04. > :46:23.UMPIRE: Mr Murray has two challenges remaining. A couple of early double
:46:24. > :47:21.faults from Murray. Another service game that dragged
:47:22. > :49:09.out a little bit longer than he would've liked but it is a hold.
:49:10. > :49:17.UMPIRE: Mr Murray is challenging the call.
:49:18. > :49:25.It might be wide, but, no, straight down the middle.
:49:26. > :49:48.UMPIRE: Mr Murray has one challenge remaining.
:49:49. > :49:54.Well, we just saw Jordan Thompson there rocking back for a moment,
:49:55. > :49:59.decided to try the drop shot but execution not ideal. He does look
:50:00. > :50:15.comfortable and relaxed, Jordan Thompson.
:50:16. > :50:21.So another hold and quite a comfortable one for Jordan Thompson
:50:22. > :50:25.who has settled in very quickly to this match. Murray with a few things
:50:26. > :50:33.to ponder. SUE BARKER: Back with this match in
:50:34. > :50:38.a moment but while the men are playing at the Queen's Club the
:50:39. > :50:46.women are playing at Edgbaston. Fist up the two time winner, Petra
:50:47. > :50:53.Kvitova, who is making her return after being stabbed in the hand by
:50:54. > :51:00.an intruder in her home, she beat Smitkova and Jo Konta is through
:51:01. > :51:03.against Tsurenko. They'll head from Edgbaston next week to the south
:51:04. > :51:08.coast, Eastbourne and you will be able to see live coverage from
:51:09. > :51:13.Monday at 2.00pm on BBC Two. We are watching Britain's number one
:51:14. > :51:22.man on court at the moment. You can hear a programme about Britain's
:51:23. > :51:33.number one woman, Jo Konta. That's called The Real Juania Konta,
:51:34. > :51:43.tonight on 5 Live at 9.00pm. Now back to Spencer.
:51:44. > :51:51.You can't help but impressed by Jordan Thompson the way he has taken
:51:52. > :51:56.to this match. A reminder, in case he needed it, that Julien Benneteau
:51:57. > :52:00.had to full out with a wrist injury, so fairly late and Jordan Thompson
:52:01. > :52:09.would've been hanging around as lucky loser. Now the celeb spotting
:52:10. > :52:10.continues at Queen's Club. That is, somewhere in there, Kevin Spicy,
:52:11. > :53:02.under the hat. Well, he has improsed himself,
:53:03. > :53:03.Murray. -- imposed himself. Pinpoint accuracy there from Murray from both
:53:04. > :53:23.the backhand and the forehand side. Well Thompson wants to see the ball.
:53:24. > :53:58.It looked to have clipped the line and swinging away from him.
:53:59. > :55:16.A good deal of variety from Jordan Thompson as well.
:55:17. > :55:23.Ivan Lendl back with Andy miles per houry. Touring with him. He spends
:55:24. > :55:28.about 18 weeks of year with Murray. -- Andy Murray. He was back for the
:55:29. > :55:34.French. Was supposed to be with him in Miami but Murray had to pull out
:55:35. > :55:38.with a right elbow injury. So by no means a permanent fixture but they
:55:39. > :55:52.talk a couple of times a week on the phone.
:55:53. > :57:04.Saw nothing of the ball, so asked the question.
:57:05. > :57:13.Good rally again. Jordan Thompson is hanging in with him in these
:57:14. > :57:33.rallies. That's a nice view, isn't it? A lot of cameras there.
:57:34. > :57:58.Well a hold to love for Jordan Thompson. You would say he looks the
:57:59. > :58:08.better player at the moment, fractionally. Goodness me a few
:58:09. > :58:16.beers have been tucked away there. Not in the ultra--professional
:58:17. > :58:19.coaches' box. You will see Ivan Lendl and Jamie Delgado
:58:20. > :58:25.alonghoodside him there and his trainer. Delgado is with him all the
:58:26. > :58:30.time and Lendl appears for the big occasions, the grass court season
:58:31. > :58:34.and there is a lot of speculation between Murray's success and whether
:58:35. > :58:38.Lendl is actually on site. Murray says - well, it's not that important
:58:39. > :58:42.but people look at the results and wonder if he would do better if
:58:43. > :58:48.Lendl was there all the time? That's never going to happen, though? No,
:58:49. > :58:52.we could certainly say Lendl is a good reason why Murray won his Grand
:58:53. > :58:57.Slams at the beginning, to get him over that hump. He is an important
:58:58. > :59:04.part of the team but Jamie Delgado has come in well and Andy Murray, he
:59:05. > :59:09.knows what he has to do now. He has a good team around him, physios,
:59:10. > :59:12.trainers and so on and it is just ticking over and to bring it in
:59:13. > :59:23.sometime, now and then. As I say, we were talking about this
:59:24. > :59:29.earlier with Milos Raonic, the higher up the game you go, the
:59:30. > :59:35.bigger your support team because you can afford to have the very best and
:59:36. > :59:43.have a large team travelling with you. Yes. And that will make a big,
:59:44. > :59:50.big difference as well. But Murray serving. New balls. We are just
:59:51. > :59:52.waiting at the moment for a few near the commentary box here to sit down,
:59:53. > :00:04.settle, settle, settle. Murray still waits. Right behind
:00:05. > :00:19.Jordan Thompson. A comedy run does not get you out of
:00:20. > :01:30.it. Well, it almost did. Andy Murray is ready. New balls. 3-4.
:01:31. > :01:36.Tough shot to make, very shrewd shot for Murray, just dropping that slice
:01:37. > :02:03.backhand well enough. -- low enough. Better from the world number one, a
:02:04. > :02:08.hold to love. It had been an interesting season to say the least
:02:09. > :02:11.up to the French Open, a worrying lack of form on the clay court but
:02:12. > :02:43.he definitely found something at Roland Garros.
:02:44. > :02:50.The wild mis-hit return there from Murray.
:02:51. > :02:54.Here is the interesting point, at 4-4, where the best players in the
:02:55. > :03:33.world just find something. Or not. That error there. It was a
:03:34. > :04:02.very makeable forehand, slapped the top of the net.
:04:03. > :04:07.If Thompson's level dips at all, Murray will pounce. This was a
:04:08. > :05:07.slight miscue. He closed that one out very
:05:08. > :05:15.impressively. Look to be stumbling slightly, Jordan Thompson. Again, a
:05:16. > :05:20.reminder of the season Murray had, we talked about his dip in form to
:05:21. > :05:26.say the least. He won in Dubai in February beating the dust go, but
:05:27. > :05:32.the list of players who lost to in the clay court season, as we do our
:05:33. > :05:39.very best to lip read, Dominik team, Alberto Ramos, but not just on the
:05:40. > :05:48.clay, he lost in Indian Wells. It's almost as if, and again they were
:05:49. > :05:55.talking about this in the studio beforehand, when he reached number
:05:56. > :05:58.one in the world and won the Olympic gold, to follow that up is
:05:59. > :06:08.difficult. There is not much break in the calendar year. Then you have
:06:09. > :06:13.got put in a training block to get ready for the Australian Open. It
:06:14. > :06:18.comes around quick, and when you put the sort of intensity and work Andy
:06:19. > :06:22.Murray did, and the success week after week, reaching most of the
:06:23. > :06:27.finals, it takes its toll and I just think combined with the illness, the
:06:28. > :06:32.injury, it was a natural reaction and wasn't that surprising, but I
:06:33. > :06:36.think he has now planned his year well. Losing some of those matches
:06:37. > :06:41.earlier than he hoped, I think he's actually well rested now and the
:06:42. > :06:45.French was a fabulous event for him. That was when he was back to his
:06:46. > :06:49.best, good preparation for the grass when you have such a good run on
:06:50. > :07:19.clay, it gives you a lot of matches in the tank.
:07:20. > :07:26.You can see there Thompson wanted to hit that and come in. His doormat
:07:27. > :07:40.couple of times but the second serve was deep enough that he couldn't
:07:41. > :07:46.convert the approach shot. You can see Murray trying to lift himself,
:07:47. > :08:27.it is a familiar sight sometimes when he feels he's just not firing.
:08:28. > :08:38.A little bounce off his legs. As crew will try to lift him as well.
:08:39. > :08:43.Not a huge amount of energy in the crowd, you are not going to ride off
:08:44. > :08:49.the back of that, you have to generate something yourself. Find
:08:50. > :09:03.people though they are. I think a lot of them have got sunstroke! Not
:09:04. > :09:29.much energy. Correction from the umpire and the line judge.
:09:30. > :09:40.He is serving well too, 70% of first serves in now. When he gets his
:09:41. > :09:42.first serve in, he has won 17 out of 22 points. Against someone like
:09:43. > :11:04.Murray, that is very good. -- not a smile of joy at the moment
:11:05. > :12:26.from Andy Murray. Thompson moves on. At the very least
:12:27. > :12:31.a tie-break to him, and Murray gave a long look to his box after that
:12:32. > :12:37.one. It just shows the standard of tennis these days on the men's side,
:12:38. > :12:43.the women's is strong, but when you think that Thompson is a lucky loser
:12:44. > :12:48.coming up against the number one in the world. Not intimidated by whom
:12:49. > :12:52.he is playing. He is coming out and showing the variety in his game,
:12:53. > :13:02.taking Andy Murray on. He's not scared, he has been coming in behind
:13:03. > :13:06.Andy Murray's serve sometimes. It's an impressive performance. I wonder
:13:07. > :13:11.how many hours before the match he knew he would be playing, whether he
:13:12. > :13:19.had heard rumours about Aljaz Bedene or not, whether he was surprised by
:13:20. > :13:25.coming into this match. Yet -- yes, we found out about midday. He has
:13:26. > :13:29.never been beyond a second round of the Grand Slam event, that is the
:13:30. > :13:35.level he's out, still fairly young at 23. But it shows the strength and
:13:36. > :13:59.depth in tennis. You contrast that with Andy Murray's
:14:00. > :14:02.Grand Slam level. It is in itself an astonishing record consistency at
:14:03. > :14:22.the highest level. It is cooling now. Hot enough.
:14:23. > :14:26.When I think about it a little bit more, it is probably the same
:14:27. > :15:23.thermometer but the sun has moved. Jordan Thompson has had some good
:15:24. > :16:19.rallies in this match. He senses an opportunity now. A
:16:20. > :16:40.couple of points away from this first set.
:16:41. > :16:52.What a backhand that was. From Jordan Thompson, it was a heck of a
:16:53. > :17:09.return he hit. This return was excellent.
:17:10. > :17:12.Jordan Thompson willing that to be wide. I think he's going to
:17:13. > :18:01.challenge. No? No. Really extended. That backhand, who
:18:02. > :18:03.was high, a little bit of balance but managed to redirect it so well
:18:04. > :18:41.down the line. Again, that backhand to the corner
:18:42. > :19:18.pays dividends for Murray. It is tie-break time. UMPIRE: Each
:19:19. > :19:28.player receives one additional challenge. What does Murray need to
:19:29. > :19:33.improve? I don't think he's playing badly, just a little bit
:19:34. > :19:38.inconsistent. His shot selection has been off at times. Not quite bearing
:19:39. > :19:42.down enough, a little bit distracted at times but I think you will be
:19:43. > :19:46.surprised at how well his opponent is playing as well. These days
:19:47. > :19:54.there's not many easy matches on the tour.
:19:55. > :20:06.A confident start to the tie-break. He would like to get his first serve
:20:07. > :20:08.percentage up a little bit higher, 53% now. He would like that in the
:20:09. > :21:12.60s. Thompson's mistake. A cry of
:21:13. > :22:01.encouragement from Murray. The first double fault of the match
:22:02. > :22:12.for Jordan Thompson. At rather in opportune moment.
:22:13. > :22:31.See how quick he got in after that serve, he was way outside the
:22:32. > :22:59.service box when he hit that volley. Murray can do it as well. Time for a
:23:00. > :24:13.chat with the coaching box. Just wide. So Thompson with the
:24:14. > :24:18.advantage. Sloppy shot there. His footwork was all wrong, it was the
:24:19. > :24:23.wrong shot anyway but his balance was not right. He is not 100% of the
:24:24. > :24:28.moment I don't think mentally, as well as the way he's hitting the
:24:29. > :24:32.ball. Seems to give cheap points away in the tie-breaker. He needs to
:24:33. > :25:23.get his mind back pretty quick now. Another very impressive serve and it
:25:24. > :25:24.brings Jordan Thompson, the lucky loser, the late replacement for
:25:25. > :26:34.Aljaz Bedene, to three set points. John Thompson has it now, Murray
:26:35. > :26:37.falters again and the world number one, the defending champion, the
:26:38. > :26:42.five-time champion up against it here in the first round at Queen's.
:26:43. > :26:52.Isn't this man taking his chance well. Well, to say that was a
:26:53. > :26:57.surprise is an understatement. I did not see that happening at all, but
:26:58. > :27:02.you have to give credit to Jordan Thompson here. He has come out on
:27:03. > :27:07.court, came as a lucky loser, not intimidated at all by playing the
:27:08. > :27:13.number one in the world. He has served and volleyed, mixed it up,
:27:14. > :27:19.come in behind Murray's serve. Mixed it up with him from the back, drop
:27:20. > :27:25.shots, hasn't seen faced at all by this occasion. He's loving it in
:27:26. > :27:30.other words, which is great to see someone, out and loving it. Murray
:27:31. > :27:36.is not at the races mentally. That tie-break was not characteristic of
:27:37. > :27:41.the way he plays. He played three or four very cheap shots, giveaway
:27:42. > :27:48.errors. It is quite often the statistic we go to with Murray the
:27:49. > :27:53.first serve. If he is down in the 50s, he will struggle a little bit
:27:54. > :28:05.more. When he's in the 60s, he's a very hard man to beat. Less winners,
:28:06. > :28:18.we weren't expecting that. Jordan has handled his serve so well.
:28:19. > :28:23.That's what I'm surprised that. Thompson has a good serve and has
:28:24. > :28:27.very it well today. We were talking about Jordan Thompson going in with
:28:28. > :28:37.nothing to lose, there comes a point in the match when you think, crikey,
:28:38. > :28:43.I could win. We should just concentrate on David O'Leary eating
:28:44. > :28:48.a Magnum at the moment, or perhaps just a supermarket own brand ice
:28:49. > :28:57.cream. I want one of those. But anyway, the man in front of David
:28:58. > :29:02.O'Leary is a very happy coach at the moment, Des Tyson, the coach of
:29:03. > :29:05.Jordan Thompson. It is a dream for a coach. They had a game plan, and his
:29:06. > :30:32.pupil has perfected it so far. Thompson just living with Murray and
:30:33. > :32:12.hanging with him and drawing out the mistake.
:32:13. > :32:21.Well applause. Jordan Thompson thought he had that point. I have
:32:22. > :32:26.seen it so often from Murray. Look to be on the ropes then returns to
:32:27. > :32:32.www. Avengeance and takes the first game of the second set. Let's look
:32:33. > :32:38.at the way Jordan Thompson has been playing, some of his serve placement
:32:39. > :32:43.He is going out for the wings. He is not serving any to the body which
:32:44. > :32:48.you would expect him a little bit but his serve is very strong. A high
:32:49. > :32:52.percentage of first serves. He backs it up. You can see with the one-two
:32:53. > :32:56.strike he goes out to the wings and hardly any balls down the middle. He
:32:57. > :33:00.is going for big shots out to the backhandside and forehand where he
:33:01. > :33:04.is taking advantage of the high percentage first serve and getting
:33:05. > :33:33.ahead in the rally, right afterwards on the first ball.
:33:34. > :33:44.Well, put away over head backhand. Made it look so easy. It's not so
:33:45. > :33:49.easy there to snap that ball shoulder high, like he does on this
:33:50. > :34:30.backhand. He got a really good wrist snap on that one.
:34:31. > :35:03.Oh, Murray a little bit lucky there. Lucky that the net call went over,
:35:04. > :35:09.firstly. That wasn't a very good forehand. He mis-hit it from this
:35:10. > :35:14.position here. He can't be missing those type of shots. He is annoyed
:35:15. > :35:23.at the net calls. That's two or three. Not a single break point in
:35:24. > :36:32.the first set, Murray and now he has three of them.
:36:33. > :36:45.I can't believe that. He really should have made one of those
:36:46. > :36:50.forehand returns 40-0 and 40-15 was on to both and missed them. That
:36:51. > :36:53.forehand was wild. This to me is all sort of mental. He is not quite
:36:54. > :37:27.focussed in at the moment. Again, from 0-40, Jordan Thompson.
:37:28. > :37:29.There has been a couple of mistakes from Murray but he has responded
:37:30. > :38:07.very well. Come on, come on. That's what you
:38:08. > :38:10.like to hear when he does that. That's the positive verbal stuff
:38:11. > :38:15.where he is trying to get himself going. It's the negative stuff that
:38:16. > :38:19.sort of pulls him down a bit. But when he's like that, getting charged
:38:20. > :38:48.up, that's normally when he starts playing his best tennis.
:38:49. > :38:53.Far, far too many - most of the errors are coming off the forehand
:38:54. > :39:42.side. And so it is. What a hold that is
:39:43. > :40:11.from Jordan Thompson, having faced three break points.
:40:12. > :42:44.Lets others do the actual cheering. Sits there, unmoved.
:42:45. > :42:52.Well, another game in the bag but Murray continues to flatter to
:42:53. > :42:57.receive the occasional good stuff. A few wayward ones as well. It's far
:42:58. > :43:01.from convincing at the moment. No, there are a couple of points and you
:43:02. > :43:06.think - OK, now he's really focussed back and then all of a sudden he
:43:07. > :43:11.plays a sloppy point and starts getting negative and he gees himself
:43:12. > :43:19.up. It's almost like he is batting himself a little bit today. Now he
:43:20. > :43:25.looks almost - flat. That's not the right word but almost not quite
:43:26. > :43:29.there. Sometimes, you know, somehow, as his ex-coach Brad Gilbert used to
:43:30. > :43:34.say - you win ugly and sometimes you have to get through. He is by no
:43:35. > :43:38.means playing his best but having said, that his opponent is making
:43:39. > :43:42.life very difficult. He is playing superbly.
:43:43. > :43:51.The winner of this one will play either Cameron Norrie, the wildcard
:43:52. > :43:56.or more likely Sam Querrey who has taken the first set in their match.
:43:57. > :44:09.Sam Querrey, even if Murray were to get through and then it ramps up,
:44:10. > :44:13.you look at poliers the calibre of Querrey and Tsonga and beyond. But
:44:14. > :44:15.sometimes he does that. He loses a set or two and then just gathers
:44:16. > :44:38.momentum. UMPIRE: Be seated quickly, the
:44:39. > :45:32.players are ready. Just a bit of a pause for the late comers.
:45:33. > :45:38.Just stretching out. There was a little bit of Dash few slips. Is it
:45:39. > :46:37.something? No, just felt something. Again, a fairly robust service game
:46:38. > :46:40.from Jordan Thompson. Not too impressive from Murray and just
:46:41. > :46:51.feeling his groin a little bit as well. I notice that Roger Federer no
:46:52. > :46:58.signs of him coming back, after resting out the clay court season.
:46:59. > :47:30.He has beaten a Japanese player in Halle.
:47:31. > :47:37.And Federer will be chomping at the bit, raring to go, because the men's
:47:38. > :47:43.singles in Wimbledon this year are pretty open. I agree. Nadal is
:47:44. > :47:49.playing pretty well but he doesn't do so well as Wimbledon. And
:47:50. > :48:00.Djokovic, not the man he was. Murray, who knows?
:48:01. > :48:08.If gets through this match, I think they'll be spending some time
:48:09. > :48:39.working on the forehand today. The forehand has been awful.
:48:40. > :48:50.Oh, outstanding. Outstanding. He surprised even himself there!
:48:51. > :48:56.The ball was behind him. That is classy. For a moment it was almost a
:48:57. > :49:14.double hit here. Bu just beautiful. They are not just missing, they are
:49:15. > :49:30.going out by miles. I hope you don't think we're
:49:31. > :49:33.focussing on negative play. Thompson has played well but Murray is
:49:34. > :50:10.certainly out of sorts. Facing a break point.
:50:11. > :50:19.It's long. The break is there for Thompson and Murray is a set down
:50:20. > :50:26.and a break down to Jordan Thompson and really up against it now.
:50:27. > :50:37.Well, didn't see this coming at all. Yes, Murray's certainly not playing
:50:38. > :50:41.his best by any means but you have to give a lot of credit for Jordan
:50:42. > :50:46.Thompson there, his game plan - he's staying with Murray in these
:50:47. > :50:50.rallies. He is moving so well. Murray is moving him side-to-side.
:50:51. > :50:57.He is chipping him back and when he gets the chance, he is not afraid to
:50:58. > :51:04.come in. Putting pressure on Murray the whole time Serve has been very
:51:05. > :51:12.good today. A superb performance so far but still a long way to go yet.
:51:13. > :51:18.And all the thoughts racing through his head. Making the transition from
:51:19. > :51:22.the guy, lucky loser - I'll give this a go and now he is thinking -
:51:23. > :51:27.well, I'm on the cusp of something really special here. There's still a
:51:28. > :51:31.long way to go, 3-2 and in matter how Murray is playing, he is still
:51:32. > :51:34.one of the very best returners in the game. So to see it out from here
:51:35. > :51:44.is still a tall order indeed. Now the crowd will come to life a
:51:45. > :51:49.little bit and try enencourage Murray. It's been a quiet afternoon,
:51:50. > :51:55.early evening here at the Queen's Club. But there's been gasps and
:51:56. > :52:01.murmurs around court when Murray was broken there. Because they realise -
:52:02. > :52:05.this is quite serious now. Jordan Thompson, lucky loser, late
:52:06. > :52:20.replacement, is a set-up and a break-up.
:52:21. > :52:25.I mean, you see how far that was out? He has no feel on that side.
:52:26. > :52:46.The forehand side. Jordan top of son will somehow have
:52:47. > :53:07.to control the adrenaline coursing around now.
:53:08. > :53:15.Beautifully done. Beautiful play by Jordan Thompson. I wonder if he
:53:16. > :53:20.might be able to back up that break and so far this service game,
:53:21. > :53:26.flawless. World class. Again keeping with Murray the whole time. Good
:53:27. > :53:30.depth. Very good approach shot. This was not an easy volley. Look at the
:53:31. > :53:35.way he took the speed off there. Just dropped it short. A hold to
:53:36. > :53:38.love after that break of serve. That's as good as it gets from
:53:39. > :53:50.Jordan Thompson. A few hopeful cries around Centre
:53:51. > :54:36.Court of -- come on Andy! And again, again, again on the
:54:37. > :54:41.forehand. Just looks like he's got no confidence on that side and
:54:42. > :54:43.Jordan Thompson is going at that side a will the with those slices.
:54:44. > :56:00.Keeping it low. And Thompson here saw this, knew
:56:01. > :56:02.that Murray was going to come in and just punched that ball low and this
:56:03. > :56:53.is a very difficult shot. Snr no, he has called it out. What
:56:54. > :56:58.play from Jordan Thompson. So Murray will challenge. But what play. Oh,
:56:59. > :57:13.no wonder he is breathing like that. And it is wide. Oh. So, now, Andy
:57:14. > :57:31.Murray facing two break points. To be a double break down.
:57:32. > :58:20.The defiant cry from Murray, trying to clamber out of this hole. Two
:58:21. > :59:06.breaks and it would near enough be over.
:59:07. > :59:15.That's the best trio of forehands we have seen for a long while from Andy
:59:16. > :59:50.Murray there. And boy does he need it.
:59:51. > :59:59.A smile at the silliness of it all. His own form. It's deserted him a
:00:00. > :00:13.little bit today. And again, that forehand fails and
:00:14. > :00:31.Thompson will have another chance. And it's taken a situation like this
:00:32. > :00:40.to bring the crowd to light here at the Queen's Club. . It's surprising,
:00:41. > :00:42.he looks at times, tired. Now they shout. Murray facing break point
:00:43. > :01:23.again. And this one, wide as well. Thompson
:01:24. > :01:31.has it, two breaks to the good in the second set and Murray so close
:01:32. > :01:41.to an early farewell. Now can he find his way back from this. -- how
:01:42. > :01:44.can he find his way back from this? Quite an extraordinary match that
:01:45. > :01:53.Jordan Thompson is playing here. He is hardly missing. Just pushing
:01:54. > :02:03.Murray over and over again in these rallies. Let's look at one of the
:02:04. > :02:12.points in there that really got us going from Jordan Thompson, has been
:02:13. > :02:22.so, so impressive throughout. This rather summed up his play, his
:02:23. > :02:28.attitude. SUE BARKER: Wellheading here for a
:02:29. > :02:32.real shock at the Queen's' club, we're going stay here with the
:02:33. > :02:42.tennis. Eggheads will follow the tennis.
:02:43. > :02:48.If you are coming in and switching on, and expected Julien Benneteau.
:02:49. > :02:54.It was a late change, Benneteau it was supposed to be an all-British
:02:55. > :02:58.affair but Benneteau with a wrist injury, and this man, the world
:02:59. > :03:03.number 90 took his place, he last flost qualifying but a lucky loser
:03:04. > :03:17.and taking full advantage at the moment of his good fortune.
:03:18. > :03:20.Serving now for a victory over the world number 1, the defending
:03:21. > :03:52.champion. And with all the signs we have seen
:03:53. > :03:58.so far from Jordan Thompson, when he has had a little bit of pressure on
:03:59. > :03:59.in the match, he has risen to the occasion. Just felt the greatest
:04:00. > :04:03.pressure. He would not be human, Jordan
:04:04. > :05:15.Thompson if he were not tight now. That was a bit tight on that
:05:16. > :06:01.forehand. It'll take us to matchpoint, which
:06:02. > :06:03.it is. And Jordan Thompson so close now to the greatest win of his
:06:04. > :06:20.career. And he does it with an ace! What a
:06:21. > :06:27.win for Jordan Thompson, but what a shock. One of the greatest upsets
:06:28. > :06:35.Queen's has seen. Five times champion, the world number one, the
:06:36. > :06:39.Wimbledon champion, the Olympic champion, and it's gone. And the
:06:40. > :06:49.hands of Jordan Thompson, the lucky loser, world number 90... What a
:06:50. > :06:54.shock for the crowd. And what a shock for Andy Murray. This is not
:06:55. > :07:07.how it was supposed to be, not how his summer of tennis was supposed to
:07:08. > :07:20.begin. Stunning. The crowd applauds Jordan Thompson, and rightly so.
:07:21. > :07:25.And now the muttering and the gasps and the chat afterwards around this
:07:26. > :07:38.court and Jordan Thompson I'm sure can't believe it. You can see in his
:07:39. > :07:49.face that he can't believe it. A reminder again, he came here via the
:07:50. > :07:54.Netherlands, where he lost, and played the Challenger Event the week
:07:55. > :07:58.before that. Didn't know until this morning that he was going to be
:07:59. > :08:05.playing today, and that's how you take an opportunity. What a victory
:08:06. > :08:09.for Jordan Thompson, but what a shock that Andy Murray is gone so
:08:10. > :08:13.let's get the thoughts of the winner, Jordan Thompson talking to
:08:14. > :08:18.John Inverdale. Jordan, many congratulations. You
:08:19. > :08:24.are not enormously popular here but I'm sure you don't care about that.
:08:25. > :08:29.Is it the biggest win of your career? Definitely, Andy is world
:08:30. > :08:34.number one, I have looked up to him so to play him on Centre Court at
:08:35. > :08:39.Queen's is definitely the biggest win of my career. When you walked on
:08:40. > :08:46.court today, did you walk on thinking I will be happy with four
:08:47. > :08:49.on four or I will be happy taking down the world number one? I
:08:50. > :08:55.certainly didn't expect to win in straight sets, but I wanted to stay
:08:56. > :08:58.calm and I did that pretty well. You lost in qualifying so you probably
:08:59. > :09:04.thought you would go and do some shopping in London for a while.
:09:05. > :09:08.Where you literally hanging around Queen's when somebody said there is
:09:09. > :09:14.an injury and you are in? I was hoping to get a game. I was always
:09:15. > :09:19.coming in, going to try and sign in and here I am, I got in the jaw so
:09:20. > :09:24.lucky. And when you heard you were playing Andy, what were your
:09:25. > :09:31.immediate thoughts? I don't know if I can say that. What a great day for
:09:32. > :09:40.Australian tennis because two upsets... And all Aussie final
:09:41. > :09:44.perhaps? I don't know that, after today's performance anything can
:09:45. > :09:48.happen but I'm not counting on it. It was a fantastic performance and
:09:49. > :09:58.many congratulations. SUE BARKER: What a huge upset, but
:09:59. > :10:01.take nothing away from this man. He think he will re-evaluate the
:10:02. > :10:05.biggest win of his career because today he has put out the world
:10:06. > :10:10.number one, the biggest shock we have seen at these championships for
:10:11. > :10:15.many years. He has played the match of his life and Andy Murray has a
:10:16. > :10:19.lot of soul-searching to do. The forehand particularly wasn't working
:10:20. > :10:23.for him today, just error after error, Jordan and his team
:10:24. > :10:29.celebrating that victory on Centre Court. What a huge shock we have had
:10:30. > :10:42.today, we have lost the number three seed, Milos Raonic, Stanislas
:10:43. > :10:45.Wawrinka, and now this man has put out the world number one, Andy
:10:46. > :10:46.Murray. What a day we have had on the second day of the Aegon
:10:47. > :10:50.Championships. Just say coming up at 6:30pm we will
:10:51. > :10:56.have a chat at that and look back at some of the big so eggheads will
:10:57. > :11:00.follow in about 20 minutes. Peter, we were watching this and you just
:11:01. > :11:05.kept thinking will Andy find his way into the match and it just didn't
:11:06. > :11:11.happen for him. So often in the five years he has won this tournament, he
:11:12. > :11:15.has come out in his first match and not played well. Just looked unsure
:11:16. > :11:24.of himself, and somehow managed to squeeze through. But today it was
:11:25. > :11:28.almost shocking how he fell away in the second set. I don't know if he
:11:29. > :11:43.was physically feeling not well or whatever. He hit the drop shot about
:11:44. > :11:48.a foot wide, it was a terrible shot. It's almost started reeling from
:11:49. > :11:53.there. It's almost like that forehand. We have never seen him
:11:54. > :11:58.play beforehand as badly as he did today. I can't remember, it has been
:11:59. > :12:04.many years. The forehand always used to be his weaker shot. It has
:12:05. > :12:10.improved and now it is a huge weapon. I have never seen him make
:12:11. > :12:16.that many errors. He was missing them sometimes by miles. It was
:12:17. > :12:22.just... I have never... He was really playing off the backhand. On
:12:23. > :12:26.the grass he tends to be more proactive. But when things are going
:12:27. > :12:33.wrong it is so difficult to try to find a way. Huge expectation on him.
:12:34. > :12:52.Exactly. Clearly being the world number one and now having to defend
:12:53. > :12:53.all of these points from tournaments he won last year. Think about it, he
:12:54. > :12:54.won nine tournaments from May until the end of the year. He has a lot of
:12:55. > :13:03.points to defend and he has got to figure out a way to block that out.
:13:04. > :13:04.As you said, he wasn't aggressive. He looked very under par. I don't
:13:05. > :13:09.know if anything is wrong but he never really got himself fired up.
:13:10. > :13:15.You have to say well done to Jordan Thompson. What a match he made Andy
:13:16. > :13:20.Murray play so many balls. Sometimes you look at these players and say
:13:21. > :13:25.how come the ranking be so low? If you look at his game, where was his
:13:26. > :13:31.weakness today? His variation was so good, and big serves. His speed
:13:32. > :13:38.around the baseline on the way he moved, he stayed so low to get back
:13:39. > :13:44.these sliced balls. That punch shot. He was not afraid to come in and
:13:45. > :13:49.rush Murray. It's like every part of his game was working and I thought
:13:50. > :13:56.it was a superb performance. A low percentage of first serves in for
:13:57. > :14:03.Andy, way less than he would have... And first serve points won,
:14:04. > :14:07.Thompson's is so much higher. He had the break points, but wasn't able to
:14:08. > :14:14.win any of them and you forgot to win those points. Yes, what Thompson
:14:15. > :14:21.did so well is chase balls down, and forcing... He made very few unforced
:14:22. > :14:27.errors so he actually forced Murray to try to win the points. Andy,
:14:28. > :14:34.after a few unforced errors, really just didn't want to do it. We have
:14:35. > :14:37.just picked out a few of the shots. Look how well he moves on the court
:14:38. > :14:42.but this is what we have seen so many times in this first week on the
:14:43. > :14:47.grass. The players who have played on the grass, and he has a couple of
:14:48. > :14:52.tournaments behind him, just move so much more confident and you can see
:14:53. > :14:57.Murray wasn't confident in his movement today. I agree, he looked
:14:58. > :15:03.unsure. He wasn't springing off the court and getting the low ones. He
:15:04. > :15:09.looked off-balance a lot, he was all over the place. This goes my theory
:15:10. > :15:15.that with the extra week's practice on grass, we would see less upsets.
:15:16. > :15:19.We lost three today, it just shows if you place on tournaments on it
:15:20. > :15:23.you have that confidence, and Andy today was looking at his box as
:15:24. > :15:28.well, getting very negative the whole time. It was a poor
:15:29. > :15:36.performance by his standards really. There was no physical presence out
:15:37. > :15:37.there. I am the number one in the world, you are not beating me. It's
:15:38. > :15:42.almost like he knew his fate was coming after he lost the first set.
:15:43. > :15:58.No. Just didn't. The French Open, dating back, the good five setter.
:15:59. > :16:06.Has commentary on the marchers, I won, but played garbage. But
:16:07. > :16:12.compared to results earleir in the year... Was coming through those
:16:13. > :16:17.marchers, was not able to against Wawrinka but Wawrinka had played an
:16:18. > :16:24.unbelievable match. Exactly. I think that we all thought maybe he did not
:16:25. > :16:29.play the best in Paris, but getting to the semi finals has got to give
:16:30. > :16:36.him confidence. Where is he now? Clearly, does not feel good hitting
:16:37. > :16:42.the tennis ball. Scary thing. That is what he has been great that,
:16:43. > :16:49.throughout his career. We had this debate, when Raonic went out, would
:16:50. > :16:56.he go to Eastbourne? Wawrinka, no. I do not think Murray will? What do
:16:57. > :17:00.you think Lendl wants? I think the bottom line, it is about him any
:17:01. > :17:05.matches you have had under your belt. The semifinals of the French
:17:06. > :17:11.Open, plenty of matches. He does not need to. It is just a question of
:17:12. > :17:16.getting this correct, the movement, and I think he is going to be
:17:17. > :17:21.absolutely fine. No reason to panic. He has got another couple of weeks,
:17:22. > :17:25.but you worry about the mental side. Going to be on the practice court,
:17:26. > :17:31.drilling himself, getting right mentally. But it is one thing to do
:17:32. > :17:38.that on the practice court. The biggest worry, we do not get to moan
:17:39. > :17:47.about him for the next five days! He'll be home, chilling! We'll miss
:17:48. > :17:55.him! What you want to be out, we're matches? Of course. But he has lost
:17:56. > :18:02.here, early before, done well at Wimbledon. I am pretty certain about
:18:03. > :18:08.that. That is the goal again. It seems to be the case, even Rafael
:18:09. > :18:16.Nadal when he pulled out of Queens, the said I feel awful. It does sort
:18:17. > :18:24.of that springboard. Definitely. No doubt this is hurting preparation.
:18:25. > :18:29.For all three... This is the worst thing that could have happened. You
:18:30. > :18:34.have got the long break without any matches. Andy Murray has done this
:18:35. > :18:39.before. You have got to be lucky to have a bad draw at Wimbledon, first
:18:40. > :18:43.round, threaten you across the best of five sets. Three is different.
:18:44. > :19:00.This guy was ranked 90. 80, 90 can't play on this surface.
:19:01. > :19:04.He is one who can. But even with Andy Murray undercooked, it is not
:19:05. > :19:13.going to be dangerous. Totally different competition. First Monday,
:19:14. > :19:20.walking out... It is different from Queens club. Yes. And we are
:19:21. > :19:25.assuming that Andy Murray will be that Andy Murray that we usually see
:19:26. > :19:29.at Wimbledon. We are going to take a look at the draw in just a moment.
:19:30. > :19:44.We have been talking about Andy Murray going out. Not the only big
:19:45. > :19:52.name to exit. Restarted with Kokkinakis who put out Raonic. Two
:19:53. > :19:59.tie break sets. Incredible story. Such a good talent when he got onto
:20:00. > :20:07.the scene. Almost every part of his body has been aching. But you would
:20:08. > :20:16.not have known that today. Tremendous performance. What did
:20:17. > :20:20.Raonic have to say? The nature of the beast? Some things are going to
:20:21. > :20:25.go against you? You try to accept these things as well as you can.
:20:26. > :20:29.Just deal with it as best as you can. Try to put it behind you. Try
:20:30. > :20:37.to learn from that and be better. How much of an irritant is this, in
:20:38. > :20:42.terms of preparation for Wimbledon? In the bigger picture, not really.
:20:43. > :20:46.Today, it is a frustration, and obviously it would have been easy
:20:47. > :20:50.scheduling everything if I was going to be here, having many more matches
:20:51. > :20:57.ahead of me. That is not the case. But thankfully, I work hard in the
:20:58. > :21:02.gym, on court, put in time. What are you going to do over the course of
:21:03. > :21:08.the next ten days? It is going to be a lot of time on court, get used to
:21:09. > :21:15.grass. Imitating match practice. Spend time in the gym. Get sharper
:21:16. > :21:22.physically. After that, another name crashing out. Lopez was just too
:21:23. > :21:29.good for Wawrinka, the runner-up at the French Open. He was the better
:21:30. > :21:33.player on court. Lopez, fresh from the final at Stuttgart last week.
:21:34. > :21:38.Looking at home on the grass. Always dangerous year, the former finalist.
:21:39. > :21:43.Wawrinka does not have a great record year. He has talked about he
:21:44. > :21:50.does not like the movement on the grass court. Settlement, also had
:21:51. > :21:54.that niggling knee injury. Wawrinka also heading to the practice courts,
:21:55. > :22:01.Lopez going to the second-rate. That amazed moment. We can hear from
:22:02. > :22:11.Stan. With everything that goes by, does losing get easier to deal with?
:22:12. > :22:18.John McEnroe hates it! It is the opposite. It is getting worse with
:22:19. > :22:25.age. I am older, and on the tour... It is never easy to lose. In terms
:22:26. > :22:31.of your plans, US and that you would probably be here until Friday, what
:22:32. > :22:38.do you do for the next ten days? Rearrange the schedule? When I
:22:39. > :22:43.arrived here, I never expected that I would be here for one week. I was
:22:44. > :22:49.just going to try my best, play as well as I could. But what is going
:22:50. > :22:58.to happen, now, I have just finished so it is going to be tough to think
:22:59. > :23:03.about that. Especially after losing. I will meet with my team. We will
:23:04. > :23:07.think a bit. Everybody is going to see what they think about the plans.
:23:08. > :23:13.I am going to need to spend a lot of time on the practice courts, grass
:23:14. > :23:17.courts, getting used to that and getting ready for Wimbledon. We need
:23:18. > :23:23.to do that. I am going to spend a lot of time on that, but not getting
:23:24. > :23:26.tired. Anybody who watched the French Open must have thought that
:23:27. > :23:30.you were physically and mentally almost exhausted. It was an
:23:31. > :23:35.extraordinary fortnight. How difficult to suddenly make the
:23:36. > :23:40.transition from that, the emotional high and maybe low, getting back to
:23:41. > :23:47.the routine, another competition, just getting on with that? It was a
:23:48. > :24:00.Grand Slam. And when I went so far, making the final, it was tough but I
:24:01. > :24:04.was low in energy. Dead, mentally, physically. I needed a few days to
:24:05. > :24:10.relax. But at the same time, Wimbledon is coming, Queens, and I
:24:11. > :24:14.have got so much time to get ready so you just need to push yourself.
:24:15. > :24:22.We decided to come over one day earlier this year to get the best
:24:23. > :24:27.preparation for Queens. I came early with my team. It was not enough for
:24:28. > :24:32.today but hopefully it can pay off for the rest. We will see you at
:24:33. > :24:40.Wimbledon. Peter, you did that match. How was that knee injury
:24:41. > :24:48.affecting his movement? He was not happy, to be staying low. On grass,
:24:49. > :24:52.you have to get down. Bounces are lower. And it looked as though he is
:24:53. > :24:58.probably going to need two, three days off. Probably not much more
:24:59. > :25:08.than that. It did hamper him a little. But again, Lopez was a very
:25:09. > :25:12.difficult first round draw. I do not think Stan is going to be that
:25:13. > :25:20.crushed, losing today. Set back, but... I think he can pull himself
:25:21. > :25:24.together. Against Lopez, we sort of suspected the opposite, but as far
:25:25. > :25:32.as Raonic is concerned, that is a big shock. I could not say that one
:25:33. > :25:35.coming at all. Raonic was not sharp. That was always going to happen.
:25:36. > :25:48.Returns of serve, poor. Not taking any of his chances. He was looking
:25:49. > :25:57.rusty on grass. And he has that sort of player. Not a natural mover, he
:25:58. > :26:05.has only got to break serve once and then it is sick over. He is going to
:26:06. > :26:11.be fine at Wimbledon. It is interesting, Wawrinka out in round
:26:12. > :26:22.one. Roger Federer won over in Halle. One more, top four. Seeded in
:26:23. > :26:30.the top four. Avoiding the big players to the quarterfinals. We
:26:31. > :26:35.have lost some of the seeds today. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga find Dimitrov
:26:36. > :26:45.will be happy. But still so many good players. Isner. Cilic. Still
:26:46. > :26:52.some big players? Absolutely. So many good players. We talk about the
:26:53. > :27:00.big four. Parity is becoming a greater issue. So many guys play
:27:01. > :27:10.great tennis. I do not know who is going to win, Simon, Muller, tough
:27:11. > :27:21.for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Dimitrov on center Court tomorrow. Mahut
:27:22. > :27:26.possibly playing next round. You have got Tomas Berdych, nobody ever
:27:27. > :27:32.talks about him. Former finalist at Wimbledon. He is going to fancy his
:27:33. > :27:35.chances. A lot of very good players. Absolutely. That is the draw. We
:27:36. > :27:43.will be back tomorrow, for day three. Just a little bit later on
:27:44. > :27:48.ABC two. Also on the red button, from 12 o'clock. Final thoughts,
:27:49. > :27:58.about Andy Murray? He has just gotten pick himself up? Class grass
:27:59. > :28:04.court player. Bad day. Rest, back to business. I think he will be fine
:28:05. > :28:10.for Wimbledon. No need to panic. Thank you. Still more tennis!
:28:11. > :28:21.Believe it or not, but it is on the red button. Cilic against Isner, met
:28:22. > :28:28.in 2015 at Wimbledon, 12-10 in the fifth! It could be another late
:28:29. > :28:37.finish. Peter, you're in the chair. What a date has been. We lost the
:28:38. > :28:40.three seed, Raonic, two, Wawrinka, and then the biggest shock of all,
:28:41. > :28:53.Andy Murray is out. Bye bye.
