:00:58. > :01:01.live at Aintree. We have fabulous conditions for the first day of
:01:01. > :01:09.this three-day Festival. It's a chilly day, but it's clear and it's
:01:09. > :01:16.sunny. We haven't had any rain here on the course at least for 48 hours
:01:16. > :01:21.or so, that's that's Becher's Brook. It's been modified. The canal turn,
:01:21. > :01:26.the challenge there is to turn sharp left as you jump it. The
:01:26. > :01:29.runners angle out to take the corner on the corner. Look at the
:01:29. > :01:33.course, it looks in perfect condition. The biggest fence is
:01:33. > :01:37.still The Chair. It looks even bigger because it's narrower and
:01:37. > :01:42.after that they stream past the grandstand which will be packed
:01:42. > :01:45.today. It's Liverpool Day and thousands have been pouring in from
:01:45. > :01:48.train stations, bus stations, from cars, all over the place to
:01:48. > :01:52.celebrate everything that is good about jump racing and also is good
:01:52. > :01:56.about this part of the world. And they have a real chance to
:01:56. > :01:59.celebrate a hero in our opening race, because Big Buck's is in the
:01:59. > :02:04.paddock here and people crowding around the outside of the paddock
:02:04. > :02:08.to get a close look at a horse who is completely unflappable. He is so
:02:08. > :02:13.cool and he has run up a consecutive run of 16 wins on the
:02:13. > :02:19.trot. He is going for his 17th today, that will be in our opening
:02:19. > :02:23.race. He is like Roger Federer, he is so cool, taking it all in,
:02:23. > :02:27.looking at people saying hello, are you here for me? Today they are. We
:02:27. > :02:36.have three days of fabulous racing, culminating in the most famous
:02:36. > :02:44.jumps race in the world. I cannot remember a better day for
:02:44. > :02:54.the Grand National... At the line... Marvellous, marvellous.
:02:54. > :03:04.They come to the Elbow, it's still wide open! Ballabriggs at 14 hrf 1.
:03:04. > :03:16.
:03:16. > :03:24.National history. Absolutely unbelievable. I think I am dreaming,
:03:24. > :03:31.I really do. Red Rum wins The National! What do
:03:31. > :03:41.you think about it now? I think it's bloody marvellous!
:03:41. > :03:46.
:03:46. > :03:49.without Ginger McCain, he sadly died last year in September. His
:03:49. > :03:54.son Donald trying to do what only his father has managed to do with
:03:54. > :04:02.Red Rum and Ballabriggs, bidding to become the first horse horse since
:04:02. > :04:06.Red Rum to win back-to-back Grand Nationals, the bust was unveiled
:04:06. > :04:14.today and Mick alongside me, he would be very excited about today.
:04:14. > :04:19.When I got on the M62 goosebumps all over, the memories come
:04:19. > :04:22.flooding back. Devon Loch, Red Rum and luckily for me a winner in The
:04:22. > :04:27.National as well. The jockeys who are riding today and tomorrow will
:04:27. > :04:31.be full of excitement as well. The coolest of the lot is AP McCoy and
:04:31. > :04:37.he is here for probably the 17th year in a row I should think. He is
:04:37. > :04:41.heading for his 17th championship and he will be riding Synchronised
:04:41. > :04:44.in the Grand National, bidding to become the first horse since Golden
:04:44. > :04:53.Miller to win the Gold Cup and Grand National. The festival was
:04:53. > :04:58.kicked off in great style by the three-times world champion gymnast
:04:58. > :05:02.Beth Tweddle. She took a break from her training to cut the ribbon with
:05:02. > :05:06.Ian Bartlet and the meeting starts in good style because over here is
:05:06. > :05:14.Big Buck's, I was taupbging -- talking about him earlier, saying
:05:14. > :05:18.he is like Roger Federer. I wonder if that's the secret to himself.
:05:18. > :05:22.His lazy style of racing, it makes everybody think they have a chance
:05:22. > :05:26.to beat him. He has beaten off every challenge foreare the last 16
:05:26. > :05:32.times. He is so beautiful. He is the perfect outline for a racehorse.
:05:32. > :05:35.He looks gleaming in his coat. He is trying to beat a record that he
:05:35. > :05:41.equalled at the Cheltenham when he won The World Hurdle for the fourth
:05:41. > :05:44.time, a record set in the 50s by Sir Ken. I think he deserves to be,
:05:44. > :05:49.because with this horse he has raced in the top grade against the
:05:49. > :05:54.best there is. Everything, every young horse that's tried to beat
:05:54. > :05:58.him they've failed. He's laughed at them. We saw him last year, he
:05:58. > :06:08.loves the track. A reminder of the Grand National news this morning,
:06:08. > :06:11.
:06:11. > :06:17.and that's that Always Waning and Lebo Bay. Hello Bud gets in, and
:06:17. > :06:21.Neptune As well. Lots of jockeys who will be wishing they were on
:06:21. > :06:24.something. There's lots of rain around but it's not enough for Lebo
:06:24. > :06:27.Bay. You were in Liverpool yesterday and it fell in the city
:06:27. > :06:34.but not here at the course. Let's look at what we have lined up for
:06:34. > :06:39.you this afternoon. Big Buck's has won 16 races in a
:06:39. > :06:43.row. Today he goes for the all-time record of consecutive wins. We
:06:43. > :06:48.could see him in the winners' enclosure for a 17th straight time.
:06:48. > :06:54.We will be behind the scenes at the yard of Nicky Henderson. Could he
:06:54. > :06:58.win the Grand National for the first time?
:06:58. > :07:02.After the fatalities last year in the Grand National the course has
:07:02. > :07:11.been modified and all attempts are being made to make it safer. We
:07:11. > :07:17.will be reviewing the review. We have Burton Port, Riverside Theatre,
:07:17. > :07:25.What A Friend for Sir Alex Ferguson in there, too. We head over the
:07:25. > :07:29.fences for the John Smith's Foxhunter chase, restricted to to
:07:29. > :07:39.amateur riders. A huge crowd here at Aintree. This is what they will
:07:39. > :08:01.
:08:01. > :08:10.be enjoying and you can too from at non-runners to tell you about. Both
:08:10. > :08:13.of them in our second race. Ruby Walsh switches to Dodging
:08:13. > :08:16.Bullets. Let's head up to the commentary box
:08:16. > :08:24.and have a word with Jim McGrath who can give us the runners and
:08:24. > :08:29.riders for this opening race. Yes, can he do it, that's the big
:08:29. > :08:33.question? Big Buck's this afternoon. He is going for his 17th
:08:33. > :08:36.consecutive victory. He will beat Sir Ken's record if he can do that.
:08:36. > :08:40.Let's look at the runners and riders for our first race, the
:08:40. > :08:50.three-miler. Big Buck's is one of the -- has won the last three years
:08:50. > :08:54.
:08:54. > :09:01.in a row. Number one, Across The Bay. Big Buck's, Crack Away Jack,
:09:01. > :09:11.Poungach, Restless Harry, Smad Place, Tidal Bay, and Won In The
:09:11. > :09:13.
:09:13. > :09:16.will be the sort of price that actually it's not even worth having
:09:16. > :09:20.a bet, although we have heard this morning that one punter has
:09:20. > :09:25.invested an awful lot of money and believes that Big Buck's is a
:09:25. > :09:29.certainty. Let's find out what's going on in the betting ring with
:09:29. > :09:33.John and Gary fantastic day down in the ring and
:09:33. > :09:40.the next three days we are going to be keeping people up to date. We
:09:40. > :09:44.also have a treat, we have Tom Segal, who is he? I call him the
:09:44. > :09:48.governor, whatever selection he puts up usually it gets smashed in
:09:48. > :09:51.odds, he is going to give us a winner for today and please God the
:09:51. > :09:55.winner of the Grand National. This is all about records at Aintree
:09:55. > :10:02.this year. Look at this bet in the firs race that William Hill have
:10:02. > :10:07.laid, Big Buck's, 500,000 at 1-5 to win 100,000. That's half a
:10:07. > :10:15.million. It's a cash bet. Somebody's gone in and had 500,000
:10:15. > :10:25.to win 100,000. He has won his last 16 races. 17 we hope for the punter.
:10:25. > :10:28.
:10:29. > :10:32.500,000 reasons why he wants it to certainty. But I think Restless
:10:32. > :10:35.Harry will run a big race here. Anybody playing eachway at home
:10:35. > :10:38.don't forget it's the first three places here. We have eight runners,
:10:38. > :10:44.I think they'll have a run for their money with Restless Harry,
:10:44. > :10:51.but the favourite looks a good thing. But 500,000!
:10:51. > :11:00.Joining us to review this first race is the champion jockey AP
:11:00. > :11:03.McCoy who rides Synchronised on Saturday. The big one would be nice.
:11:03. > :11:06.Most exciting the Gold Cup and I remember that day at Cheltenham you
:11:06. > :11:11.were keen on his chances the evening evening before and that day
:11:11. > :11:14.as well. You really fancied him. Yeah, he's bulls been a good stayer
:11:15. > :11:19.-- he's always been a good stayer and to win National races proved
:11:19. > :11:24.that and I am glad that he won the Gold Cup. The Gold Cup is the
:11:24. > :11:28.pinnacle of our sport. Obviously he has a big task on Saturday. No
:11:28. > :11:32.horse has won both since Golden Miller but records are there to be
:11:32. > :11:35.broken and why shouldn't he do it? We were talking about the buzz we
:11:35. > :11:39.get coming here and he was feeling it driving here, do you still get
:11:39. > :11:47.excited about coming to Aintree? You do, it's one of our biggest
:11:47. > :11:51.meetings. The The Grand National is probably the biggest horse race in
:11:51. > :11:57.the world. Let's look at the horse that actually would have been good
:11:57. > :12:00.enough to run in a Gold Cup but after he unSaturdayed Sam --
:12:00. > :12:03.unseated Sam Thomas he went back to hurdling and has been unbeaten
:12:03. > :12:08.since. And you are part of that record-setting trend. You have won
:12:08. > :12:15.on him how many times? I rode him twice when Ruby was injured and won
:12:15. > :12:21.on him both times at Newbury. An amazing horse, obviously with 16
:12:21. > :12:25.wins in a row it's obvious to say that, but got a great cruising
:12:25. > :12:32.speed. Does as Ruby says, what good stayers do, comes alive when you
:12:32. > :12:35.want him. Doesn't seem to have any flaws. Probably the best staying
:12:35. > :12:40.hurdler definitely of my time and I have seen a few good ones.
:12:40. > :12:43.horse of a lifetime for Ruby Walsh to ride and for Paul Nicholls to
:12:43. > :12:47.train, he is blessed with a wealth of good horses but this boy is
:12:47. > :12:50.exceptional, Big Buck's. It's very, very hard to see him getting beaten,
:12:50. > :12:54.Mick, but he is interesting to watch in a race. He doesn't always
:12:54. > :12:57.make it look easy. He doesn't. There is sa lot of guys at home who
:12:57. > :13:00.play in running betting and they've made a lot of money off this horse,
:13:00. > :13:03.at times he looks beaten but it's almost like he is playing with
:13:03. > :13:08.everybody, just keeping them interested. You know, what an
:13:08. > :13:12.amazing horse this fella is. I want to be able to say I was there when
:13:12. > :13:17.he broke the record. Let's have a word with the family that own him,
:13:17. > :13:22.the Stewart family. And how much they adore him, they're with Ian.
:13:22. > :13:27.Thank you, Clare. Yes, how big is your mantelpiece? I don't know,
:13:28. > :13:32.it's a couple of mantelpieces, but it's a reasonable size, Ian. Let's
:13:32. > :13:36.see if we can make it bigger today. 16 so far, he is an amazing horse.
:13:37. > :13:41.He is a horse of a lifetime and probably a fluke I would have
:13:41. > :13:43.thought. How nervous are you? How nervous do you get every time and
:13:43. > :13:48.are you now you have got to this record, is it more nerve-racking
:13:48. > :13:52.for you? I think so. You have to respect his achievements and in the
:13:52. > :13:55.game and you don't get twitchy when something like this, one of the
:13:55. > :14:05.greatest race tracks in the world, there would be something wrong with
:14:05. > :14:09.
:14:09. > :14:15.you. And at home... He came up here this morning, arrived about about
:14:15. > :14:25.6.00, walked the box and now he is walking in the ring. A quick
:14:25. > :14:27.
:14:27. > :14:31.question, later in the fox hunters. We brought him back on the
:14:31. > :14:35.Foxhunters, young James 17 years of age takes the ride. We think as
:14:35. > :14:39.long as he jumps around he will be there or thereabouts. Good luck
:14:39. > :14:42.with both of them. We are all going to be shouting this first one home.
:14:42. > :14:46.Good luck. Thank you very much. Exciting day for Andy Stewart. If
:14:46. > :14:50.there's a horse that might upset him today, could it be Smad Place?
:14:51. > :14:55.He finished third in The World Hurdle. The bell is going to tell
:14:55. > :14:59.the jockeys to get on. They've only walked into the paddock, not a lot
:14:59. > :15:02.of time to get instructions. He was very much ridden to be placed, and
:15:02. > :15:06.if you do that in a race like this you have every chance of being so.
:15:06. > :15:10.He is a smart horse, he is an improver. Again he is a great
:15:11. > :15:16.advertisement. Alan King's horses are very much in a richer vein of
:15:16. > :15:19.form this year than last. Alan King was the last treupber to win this -
:15:19. > :15:24.- trainer to win this race. Big Buck's has dominated but in 2008 he
:15:24. > :15:27.won it with Blazing Bailey who has recently been retired. Alan having
:15:27. > :15:36.a quick chat with Robert Thornton who doesn't have a ride in the
:15:36. > :15:40.Grand National. I find that unbelievable. Things can change and
:15:40. > :15:50.you want to make sure you are here on Saturday and available just in
:15:50. > :15:51.
:15:51. > :15:59.the paddock. He didn't go to the Cheltenham Festival. No, but this
:15:59. > :16:03.horse really catches my eye in the paddock. He is almost like a mirror.
:16:03. > :16:09.If you are looking to back something that finishes placed, he
:16:09. > :16:19.stands out for me. And he does go well fresh. He hasn't run for 102
:16:19. > :16:26.days. The jockey has filled in well when
:16:26. > :16:30.Ruby hasn't been around. I think Big Buck's will win and Smad Place
:16:31. > :16:34.be second. Pretty boring but I think Big
:16:34. > :16:42.Buck's and Smad Place are going to have it pretty much between them.
:16:42. > :16:48.This is a frustrating horse, Tidal Bay. Oh, my word, does he have
:16:48. > :16:52.talent? He races with his head held very high, so he looks awkward.
:16:52. > :16:59.Sometimes his jumping leave as bit to be desired. He throws races away
:16:59. > :17:04.by putting in a few sloppy jumps. There is no his ability though.
:17:04. > :17:08.Paul Nicholls has a strangled hold on the race, apart from Smad Place.
:17:08. > :17:14.He trains Tidal Bay, Big Buck's and puenpuefpblt Ruby is on board Big
:17:15. > :17:24.Buck's and that's the -- Big Buck's and Poungach. Ruby is on board Big
:17:25. > :17:32.
:17:32. > :17:37.Buck's and that's the best place to you, he goes through what they call
:17:37. > :17:43.a flat spot, does he feel like he's not going to pick up or is it
:17:43. > :17:48.deceptive ive on the eye? He is the ultimate there. Cheltenham, he
:17:48. > :17:54.wanted to make sure it was a test of stamina. He comes alive as soon
:17:54. > :18:01.as you grab hold of him properly. He's the sign of a pure horse, when
:18:01. > :18:06.you grab hold of them he's there. And you can see suddenly he comes
:18:06. > :18:09.awake, his ears are pricked. What are the conditions like out there?
:18:09. > :18:15.Rishi Persad and Richard Pitman are on the course. How is it looking
:18:15. > :18:21.the It is beautiful out here, Clare. Bit of a headwind into the faces of
:18:21. > :18:28.the horse as they come up the home straight. We are at the one of the
:18:28. > :18:32.most formidable fences in the world, The Chair. It is good to soft in
:18:32. > :18:37.places. It is good ground, in my estimation. Remember they weigh
:18:37. > :18:42.half a tonne, so we'll see how they open it up. I will be surprised if
:18:42. > :18:50.they don't have to water. official description is good to
:18:50. > :18:55.soft, good in places. Let's wander on to the hurdles course. It is
:18:55. > :18:59.officially good to soft but there's a lovely covering of grass. But
:18:59. > :19:02.underneath it there's quite good ground. There is, but to get
:19:02. > :19:07.through this carpet, it is there to take the concussion out of it. This
:19:07. > :19:13.is perfect, good ground. But the dilemma is, do they water and then
:19:13. > :19:16.the heavens open? Or do they not and it drys out until Saturday?
:19:16. > :19:21.forecast for the three days of the might it was that we might get the
:19:21. > :19:24.odd shower, which would take away the need to water. If we don't get
:19:24. > :19:28.the odd shower before the Grand National, will they need to water?
:19:28. > :19:34.I would say without a doubt. That's health and safety policy, slow them
:19:34. > :19:40.down a bit. The amateurs' race today over the big fences the, they
:19:40. > :19:46.will go lickety-split. They will. We hope that Big Buck's will go
:19:46. > :19:51.lickety-split in the opening race. This is the shot from the
:19:51. > :19:56.helicopter coming down to the start of this three mile one furlong
:19:56. > :20:00.hurdle race. How will the race pan out, in terms of tactics? Restless
:20:00. > :20:04.Harry probably ruined his chances of finishing second or third. I see
:20:04. > :20:11.no reason for them to change tactics. I think Restless Harry
:20:11. > :20:18.will (Inaudible) just ride him so he is handy enough so he can press
:20:18. > :20:22.on when the other horses quicken up. He will quicken away. Ruby will
:20:22. > :20:27.keep flopping him up and down on the straight. He will probably do
:20:27. > :20:34.the same, be handy enough and close enough so if the others quicken a
:20:34. > :20:40.bit he can go them. He looks a slow horse but he really goes.
:20:40. > :20:46.amount of Mickey taking you and Ruby do... He is probably better at
:20:46. > :20:51.it than I am. He will ride Big Buck's the handy way. He's not a
:20:51. > :21:00.slow horse. The easiest way is to keep it as simple as possible.
:21:00. > :21:06.is it going to take to get him beat? Someone running out and rug
:21:06. > :21:12.being -- rugby tackling him. It is a horse race and these things can
:21:12. > :21:18.happen. On all known form he is going to win again. You saw a shot
:21:18. > :21:24.there after Won In The Dark. Andrew Lynch is on board, who had a very
:21:24. > :21:30.good Cheltenham Festival. Let's head to the commentary box. Jim
:21:30. > :21:33.McGrath is joined by Richard Dunwoody. It's interesting, Big
:21:33. > :21:37.Buck's, they've tried everything to get him beaten. They thought if he
:21:37. > :21:45.waited and they kicked they could be able to catch him out. Last time
:21:45. > :21:48.he was closer. They don't seem to be able to get a tactic to him.
:21:48. > :21:54.Reviewingy is riding him. The main thing is he sits handy and doesn't
:21:54. > :22:01.give them too much to do. He looks a picture. Is there any conceivable
:22:01. > :22:05.way he can get beaten today? There's a few flights of hurdles,
:22:05. > :22:12.Jim. Generally, Ruby has been quoted as saying he would be good
:22:12. > :22:19.enough to be there in a Champion Hurdle. Given he jumps be, he has
:22:19. > :22:24.his own style of jumping, Jim. You know... It's a hurdle race. It's
:22:24. > :22:29.over obstacles. Something like that could happen and I'm touching wood
:22:29. > :22:34.that it doesn't. You've ridden many great horses in the past. You know
:22:34. > :22:38.the pressures are on and you have to jump them. As long as he's able
:22:38. > :22:43.to measure them and get into a rhythm. Ruby will get him into a
:22:43. > :22:51.rhythm quick enough. And they are off and running. Three miles and
:22:51. > :22:55.half a furlong, jumping a total of 13 flights in this BGC Partners

:23:33. > :23:37.straight on the first occasion. Across The Bay with the noseband
:23:37. > :23:42.just lobbing along. A good, even pace in this staying contest. Leads
:23:42. > :23:48.by two-and-a-half, three lengths or so to up on the outside Poungach in
:23:48. > :23:52.the spotted sleefts. Tucked behind them is Big Buck's. Getting into
:23:52. > :23:56.that rhythmic style as they head down the back. Further back in the
:23:56. > :24:00.field as they come to the third is Restless Harry. Followed by Smad
:24:00. > :24:06.Place on the inside. Then Won In The Dark and back towards the rear

:24:18. > :24:22.Two away to Big Buck's on the inside as he gets over that in good,
:24:22. > :24:27.fluent style. Travelling well on the inside for Ruby Walsh. A half
:24:27. > :24:30.length on the outer is Restless Harry. They continue their journey
:24:30. > :24:35.to the fourth. Smad Place tucked away on the inside. Further back
:24:35. > :24:39.Won In The Dark, out wider then is Tidal Bay, and two or three lengths
:24:39. > :24:42.away is Crack Away Jack. To the far corner of the course and the
:24:42. > :24:49.favourite is exactly where you would want him to be. Travelling
:24:49. > :24:57.kindly as well Richard. That's right, Jim. Ruby is there, where he
:24:57. > :25:02.wants to be, sat third. It is where I would want to be in the race. So
:25:02. > :25:04.far they are all jumping well and everything is travelling well.
:25:05. > :25:09.they swing towards the entrance to the home straight on the first
:25:09. > :25:13.occasion, just under two miles to travel. Across The Bay the leader
:25:13. > :25:18.by a length, to on the outside Poungach. Half a length away tucked
:25:18. > :25:21.away is Big Buck's, just lobbing along behind these two pace-setters.
:25:21. > :25:25.Further back is Restless Harry on the outside. Then Smad Place as
:25:25. > :25:30.they come to the fifth. They are followed by Won In The Dark and
:25:30. > :25:37.Tidal Bay, and last is Crack Away Jack. Getting up towards flight
:25:37. > :25:41.number six. On the far side Across The Bay draws towards it. He jumps
:25:41. > :25:45.it clean in spectacular style. A half length in front of Poungach as
:25:45. > :25:50.they get up the straight towards flight number seven. Across The Bay
:25:50. > :25:54.on the far side leads to it from Poungach and Big Buck's. Just in
:25:55. > :25:58.behind them as they get over seven in good style. Two lengths to Smad
:25:58. > :26:04.Place, who is cracking the favourite. Restless Harry, a length
:26:04. > :26:11.to Won In The Dark, followed by Tidal Bay. Crack Away Jack. They
:26:11. > :26:16.still no change. Not much change so far, Jim. He got a little bit tight
:26:16. > :26:21.to the last hurdle. He is travelling well. Everything is
:26:21. > :26:24.going to plan. We'll see what unfold as they go into the final
:26:24. > :26:29.circuit. Across The Bay leads comfortably bay length to Poungach
:26:29. > :26:32.on the outside. Then Big Buck's tucked away third on the inner.
:26:32. > :26:36.Further back is Restless Harry, travelling on the outside of Smad
:26:36. > :26:40.Place. A length-and-a-half to Crack Away Jack. On the inside of Won In
:26:40. > :26:45.The Dark, two lengths to Tidal Bay at the tail of the field. They head
:26:45. > :26:51.into the back for the final time, towards flight number 8. Across The
:26:51. > :26:55.Bay leans over it from Poungach... And rest vest a faller! He's
:26:55. > :26:59.brought down Won In The Dark. There is two gone down the back. At
:26:59. > :27:03.flight number 8. They continue their journey down the far side.
:27:03. > :27:09.Across The Bay the leader from Poungach and Big Buck's. Just
:27:09. > :27:14.behind them is Smad Place. They are clear of Crack Away Jack. Both
:27:14. > :27:18.jockeys are sitting up OK. Tidal Bay is tailed off as they head
:27:18. > :27:23.towards four out. It is Across The Bay on the inside. It is getting
:27:23. > :27:29.low and Smad Place has gone! A faller. They head now towards the
:27:29. > :27:32.exit from the back. It is Across The Bay being joined and being
:27:32. > :27:36.challenged by Poungach on the outside. Two lengths away is Big
:27:36. > :27:39.Buck's. They swing around that turn and make their way across the too
:27:39. > :27:44.many of the track. In fourth position Crack Away Jack. They are
:27:44. > :27:48.the only ones in contention. Forget about Tidal Bay, who has tailed
:27:48. > :27:55.right off. They head towards ten trance of the home straight. Three
:27:55. > :28:00.left to jump. It is Across The Bay, but here comes the champ on the
:28:00. > :28:06.outside. Big Buck's. Bidding for his 17th consecutive hurdle victory.
:28:06. > :28:11.Ruby Walsh stealing a chicy peek. They were fold by Crack Away Jack
:28:11. > :28:14.and Poungach. Big Buck's moves up on the outside. Across The Bay and
:28:14. > :28:19.Big Buck's together. Big Buck's now powers into the lead followed by
:28:19. > :28:24.Crack Away Jack and then Poungach. They've got two left to jump. Big
:28:24. > :28:29.Buck's in front. Draws towards the second last. Over it clear. Three
:28:29. > :28:33.in front, Crack Away Jack, who is giving Chase, followed by Across
:28:33. > :28:38.The Bay. But the champion is making a supreme effort, with one left to
:28:38. > :28:44.jump, Big Buck's comes towards the last. He's over in immaculate style,
:28:44. > :28:48.five lengths in front. He is going to break Sir Ken's record.Th
:28:48. > :28:53.consecutive victories over hurdles. What a horse he is! A true champion.
:28:53. > :28:58.He comes up to the line now. The warm applause of his appreciative
:28:58. > :29:02.crowd at Liverpool. Up to the line, Big Buck's wins it by seven lengths.
:29:02. > :29:07.In second is Crack Away Jack. Third was Across The Bay. Followed by
:29:07. > :29:13.with Tidal Bay and Poungach is the last of the finishers. What a horse
:29:13. > :29:17.he is. What a horse, Jim. That was fantastic for racing, to see him do
:29:17. > :29:22.that. Broken the record. Couldn't have done it any easier today.
:29:22. > :29:28.Jumped superb all the way. He really switched on. Then two horses
:29:28. > :29:32.fell and that set the race up for him with Smad Place falling as well.
:29:32. > :29:37.Crack Away Jack, I thought he looked to be travelling nicely. But
:29:37. > :29:40.didn't have a lot to give him a straight. He's done a grate job,
:29:40. > :29:46.the champion. Ruby Walsh riding with supreme confidence throughout.
:29:46. > :29:51.He knows this horse so well. A 17th consecutive victory over hurdles.
:29:51. > :29:57.Absolutely unbelievable. He hasn't been beaten since New Year's Day
:29:57. > :30:07.2009. It all came about because he actually made a mess of that last
:30:07. > :30:11.
:30:11. > :30:18.jump. He got rid of Sam Thomas in Three and a quarter lengths between
:30:18. > :30:24.second and third. First, Big Buck's. Second Crack Away Jack, and third
:30:24. > :30:28.Across The Bay and fourth Tidal Bay. Those are just beautiful shots.
:30:28. > :30:32.That's a horse that's happy in what he is doing and a jockey that all
:30:32. > :30:38.he wants to do is pat him and say well done, you are on your own a
:30:38. > :30:42.record-setter, a record-breaker and an amazing horse, iconic horse.
:30:42. > :30:47.It's a thrill to be here to watch him and AP, for you to have been
:30:47. > :30:52.part of that story, as well, it may hurt to stand on the side and watch
:30:52. > :30:56.but it's an amazing thing. I was privileged to be allowed to ride
:30:56. > :31:00.him when Ruby was injured, amazing horse. That record of 17 wins in a
:31:00. > :31:03.row, amazing training performance as well to keep a horse that right
:31:03. > :31:08.for 17 starts. Fair play to Paul Nicholls for that. The horse
:31:08. > :31:13.deserves all the credit. He went around there, done as we thought
:31:13. > :31:23.and he is as a lot of people say, a cash machine, just collect your
:31:23. > :31:29.money every time he runs. Will we see another one like him, who knows.
:31:29. > :31:39.Andy Stewart is with Rishi now. At what point did you stop being
:31:39. > :31:40.
:31:40. > :31:45.nervous? When he went over the line. He seemed to be idling in front.
:31:45. > :31:49.Alan King's horse was behind us. Just take every horse as it comes.
:31:50. > :31:54.Can you tell me what emotions you go through as he goes over the line,
:31:54. > :31:59.a lot of professionals who have fall nonlove with this horse,
:31:59. > :32:07.they've become emotional. It's so flattering of the people today here,
:32:07. > :32:13.coming up and asking for autographs, mine, not the horse's, and he is
:32:13. > :32:19.more newsworthy than I am, but it's a privilege. Will there be new
:32:19. > :32:23.challenges next season? I would have thought if he is that much
:32:23. > :32:30.older it will be five next year. record-breaker in the first race at
:32:30. > :32:35.Aintree. It's a pleasure to be here. Thank you.
:32:35. > :32:43.So, here he is, have a look at him, a true champion.
:32:43. > :32:49.He has such a relaxed presence really. We just see the way he is
:32:49. > :32:55.able to arch his neck and just go along in that rhythmic style. It's
:32:55. > :33:02.characteristic of him. He is very relaxed. Just as soon as he turned
:33:02. > :33:05.down the back the second time he looked to grab hold of the bit and
:33:05. > :33:09.then turning into the strait the race was all over. This is a
:33:09. > :33:14.perfect start to the meeting for Ruby. He comes here with high
:33:14. > :33:19.exceptions, as ever, and some great rides. Yeah, smashing rides over
:33:19. > :33:24.the few days. Lovely to get a pressure ride like this, you know
:33:24. > :33:29.it should win, so you want everything to go right and that's -
:33:29. > :33:33.he goes back into confidence with the rest of the meeting now. Just
:33:33. > :33:36.confirmation that the three horses who fell, Restless Harry, who
:33:36. > :33:40.brought down Won In The Dark and Smad Place who fell at the fourth
:33:40. > :33:45.last, all are fine and so are their jockeys, which is a big relief. But
:33:45. > :33:49.Big Buck's there receiving the plaudits of the crowd and Judy in
:33:49. > :33:54.the red, just wanting to love him, because this is what he does. He
:33:54. > :33:58.does it with so little bother. OK, the race was reduced to pretty much
:33:58. > :34:03.nothing when the main dangers - certainly when Smad Place fell. You
:34:03. > :34:06.still have to jump the hurdles. have. Look at his ears, straight
:34:06. > :34:09.ahead. He is looking at the obstacles ahead. He almost knows
:34:09. > :34:13.where he is at this stage. He has been here a few times now. Just
:34:13. > :34:18.watch, when he lands over this Ruby has to shake him up a little bit.
:34:18. > :34:25.You said it in commentary, he is only playing with him. Obviously a
:34:25. > :34:28.worry he could maybe pull himself up a little bit in front. He was
:34:28. > :34:33.impress - shows you how much luck you need and a good horse they're
:34:33. > :34:36.easy to ride and you can keep things simple on them. They're
:34:36. > :34:42.uncomplicated. This horse might need to be dropped in, could have
:34:42. > :34:45.got brought down by the horse that fell. Good horses make the job easy
:34:46. > :34:51.for you. You can keep them out of trouble, keep it simple on him. He
:34:51. > :34:55.is an amazing horse. There is a lot of pressure riding him. There is
:34:55. > :34:58.Paul nick olts -- Nichols, almost couldn't bear to watch. Let's hear
:34:58. > :35:03.what he thought of it. It's always a joy after they cross
:35:03. > :35:08.the line, Paul. Yeah, it was straightforward today. Travelled,
:35:08. > :35:12.did everything right. Very happy with him. Great ride again. I could
:35:12. > :35:21.have ridden him today! A lot of people here would have fancied
:35:21. > :35:30.being aboard today. The hardest bit is getting on, it was as
:35:30. > :35:38.competitive as Cheltenham. He boated in -- bolted in today.
:35:38. > :35:42.had a harder race than usual at Cheltenham, to see him fresh.
:35:42. > :35:45.are lucky we never gotten to the bottom of how good he really is.
:35:46. > :35:51.He's never really been extended over hurdles. I would say there is
:35:51. > :35:56.more there. Would there be a new new challenge for him. Andy was
:35:56. > :36:02.saying same four races. The same routine. Now he has got older, pays
:36:02. > :36:06.to give him a run in between The Long Walk and Cheltenham. He's come
:36:06. > :36:09.here in good form to follow the same route. What a joy it is to
:36:09. > :36:12.have ridden all these great horses. People try and squeeze some words
:36:12. > :36:18.out of jockeys and say this is the best I have ever sat on. I suppose
:36:18. > :36:21.you will be close to saying that? Yeah, I did also ride Kauto Star
:36:21. > :36:27.and it's hard to compare one over the other. They're different horses,
:36:27. > :36:31.one is a hurdler, one a chaser. Two incredible horses. We have both
:36:31. > :36:38.been incredibly lucky to have been involved. God willing he will stay
:36:38. > :36:46.sound and nice if we can go on and will be tough and saupbd as --
:36:46. > :36:56.sound as Kauto has been. Well done to the team. Thank you.
:36:56. > :37:06.
:37:06. > :37:10.It was never really in doubt, Big punter who laid out 500,000 to win
:37:10. > :37:16.100,000, it took him about six six minutes to win the money, I don't
:37:16. > :37:22.think any building society will give you 100,000 for nothing. A
:37:22. > :37:32.great horse, isn't it, John. 7-4 to win The World Hurdle next year, the
:37:32. > :37:35.best price we have so far, that's with - and even money with Coral,
:37:35. > :37:39.seven William Hill. Sounds generous at the moment. There are the
:37:39. > :37:49.jockeys coming back after their falls. Good to see them up and
:37:49. > :37:51.
:37:51. > :37:56.walking around. And there is Chuck Thornton,
:37:56. > :37:59.already weighing out for the next. Ruby Walsh getting congratulated by
:37:59. > :38:03.everybody. A wonderful thing to be associated with a horse like that.
:38:03. > :38:07.A record has been set here. What a thrill in the opening race of the
:38:07. > :38:10.Aintree Festival. AP is with us, because he is not in the first two
:38:10. > :38:13.races, you are in the third on Burton Port. It's an intriguing
:38:13. > :38:20.race, what do you think of it? much so. Obviously a lot of these
:38:20. > :38:30.horses have been to Cheltenham. Burton Port ran well in the Gold
:38:30. > :38:33.
:38:33. > :38:38.Cup. Nacarat, Hunt Ball has improved, still about 16lbs to find
:38:38. > :38:44.but he is an improver. Very open race. Hopefully Burton Port can
:38:44. > :38:48.outstay the best arest. -- rest. Hunt Ball is owned by a farmer, you
:38:48. > :38:55.never know anybody make more noise when the horse wins. He says he won
:38:55. > :39:02.half a million at the Cheltenham Festival. Crazy sorts of money. You
:39:02. > :39:06.are not doing it with any punting allowed, you are doing it for
:39:06. > :39:11.winners. We wish you well. Lovely way to start the meeting by hearing
:39:11. > :39:15.from him. Let's look to the Grand National and get the latest betting
:39:15. > :39:20.news. We know who line up and the reserves who were allowed to come
:39:20. > :39:24.in until tomorrow morning. Let's go down to the betting ring and rejoin
:39:24. > :39:27.Gary and John. We are with Tom from The Racing
:39:27. > :39:31.Post. You have had a good look, what's the initial thing looking at
:39:31. > :39:34.the race? It's very, very difficult this year, as you can imagine. 40
:39:34. > :39:38.runners. The ground, we are not sure how it's going to be. More
:39:38. > :39:45.More showers will make it an interesting list. There is
:39:45. > :39:49.shortlist I have, I have to start with Synchronised. He is coming
:39:49. > :39:53.back after an impressive performance. He needs soft ground.
:39:53. > :40:00.If it doesn't rain before the National he will get too far back,
:40:00. > :40:04.that's not a good thing. 5-1, is that value? It's not, terrible
:40:04. > :40:10.price. The other thing is there's been 17 horses have won a Gold Cup
:40:10. > :40:14.and come here and only one horse has won, Golden Miller. That's a
:40:14. > :40:18.big ask. The stats are against him. He has a better chance than some
:40:18. > :40:24.that have tried. He is the strongest stayer I have seen for
:40:24. > :40:30.many a year. The Welsh National, that form. If he can jump around
:40:30. > :40:36.which is the issue, because it's a different to the we will -- Welsh
:40:36. > :40:40.National. Here if you you get too far behind too early. We want
:40:40. > :40:47.outsiders for my nan and grandad. have backed a horse called Treacle
:40:47. > :40:52.from Ireland. He was third in the Lexus Chase. I backed him a few
:40:52. > :41:00.weeks back. Organised Confusion, he won the Fairy House Irish Grand
:41:00. > :41:06.National last year. Because I Couldn't See. Jumps brilliantly.
:41:06. > :41:09.Can't forget Ballabriggs and if the rain comes West End Rocker. What
:41:09. > :41:15.about today, what's the pearl of wisdom for today? I would suggest
:41:15. > :41:20.having a few quid in the Red Rum Chase, 4.15 on Free World. He was a
:41:20. > :41:25.very good horse a few years back for Paul Nicholls. Rated I think
:41:25. > :41:29.about 20lbs higher than now. He's come back to a good mark. Ground is
:41:29. > :41:32.right. I think he will go well today. The major football match of
:41:32. > :41:36.the weekend? Southampton and Reading on Friday, that's the big
:41:36. > :41:44.one. You can't be serious! That's the crucial one for promotion. As
:41:44. > :41:53.for your game, we all know what you want to win. I haven't forgiven you
:41:53. > :41:59.for putting in the Racing Post. bookies hate you every week because
:41:59. > :42:09.you are the governor. But he is a nice fella. He is a nice fella and
:42:09. > :42:09.
:42:09. > :43:15.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 66 seconds
:43:15. > :43:19.a held of a tipster. These are the see Nicky.
:43:19. > :43:22.I had 15 years a stable jockey here with Nicky Henderson. This is my
:43:22. > :43:26.first time back as a reporter with the BBC and it feels a little bit
:43:27. > :43:31.weird. But, in national hunt racing at the moment, whether you are a
:43:31. > :43:40.reporter, member of the public, jockey or trainer, this is the
:43:40. > :43:48.hottest place to be. If we can just have one winner on the firs day it
:43:48. > :43:51.takes the pressure off. The second day was ridiculous. It was an
:43:51. > :43:57.amazing week. The horses were great throughout the week. The jockeys
:43:57. > :44:02.were good too. Riverside Theatre just won it! What
:44:02. > :44:08.an unbelievable week for Nicky Henderson. Five days later it's all
:44:08. > :44:12.over, but it seems a long time ago now. It's all sort of all roads
:44:12. > :44:20.lead to Aintree. And Nicky and Aintree go back a long way. After
:44:20. > :44:25.tpeuf inish -- finishing five teenth as a jockey, he won the
:44:25. > :44:29.following year. Two years later in his first
:44:29. > :44:35.attempt as a trainer he was second. Since then another second, a third,
:44:35. > :44:38.a fourth and two fifths. I rode for him seven times. Nicky has had the
:44:39. > :44:43.whole National experience, except a win. I had about six consecutive
:44:43. > :44:48.fallers at the first. I rode a few! You remember them better than I
:44:48. > :44:55.would. Then we had a lot of years when I couldn't even have a winner
:44:55. > :44:59.at the meeting. It was terrible. I think if it was a Test match it
:44:59. > :45:06.would have been very good, I think I got to 63-0 or something. There
:45:06. > :45:16.is a National winner here and he has been here for 34 years. Cork
:45:16. > :45:25.
:45:25. > :45:32.skwreu Brown landed the big one to lead the winner... Did you back
:45:32. > :45:37.it? I had 10 each way and foregoat to draw it I was so excited. This
:45:37. > :45:43.year there are two prizes - the National itself and the trainer's
:45:43. > :45:48.title. Shakalakaboomboom has already ran at Aintree, in last
:45:48. > :45:54.year's Topham, and has been prepared for the National.
:45:54. > :45:58.everything has gone to plan, he seems to be well fresh, so we
:45:58. > :46:06.haven't done a lot with him. Shakalakaboomboom trips off the
:46:06. > :46:13.Grand National winner has a good ring to it too. Gradually most
:46:13. > :46:16.things have come our way at the end of the day. You've won a Gold Cup.
:46:16. > :46:21.Umpteen Champion Hurdles. That's the only race that's missing now.
:46:21. > :46:29.So do you think you will hang on until you get it? Um... Yeah,
:46:29. > :46:35.probably. It would just be nice to do it once.
:46:35. > :46:40.And there is Nicky Henderson in the paddock. He has Lyvius running in
:46:40. > :46:45.the next, and he's got Riverside Theatre coming up, and Burton Port
:46:45. > :46:50.in our third race. Riverside Theatre completed the five-timer
:46:50. > :46:55.that Conor Murphy, one of the lads in the yard, had backed as an
:46:55. > :47:00.accumulator and won 1 million. should have been 3 million. What
:47:00. > :47:04.an amazing story. Barry didn't know how much pressure was on him to win
:47:04. > :47:08.that race. Oh, I think he did. It was a brilliant ride. Over the
:47:08. > :47:12.course of the next three days we are going to be showing you
:47:12. > :47:22.historic moments from Grand Nationals past, as chosen and told
:47:22. > :47:23.
:47:23. > :47:29.by this man, the voice of racing, Sir Peter O'Sullivan.
:47:29. > :47:34.1960 was the first time the race was televised is live, and the BBC
:47:34. > :47:39.deployed 16 cameras to tell the story. As presenter, David Coleman
:47:39. > :47:43.told the country it was a piece of television history. Things were
:47:43. > :47:48.rather chaotic on the outside broadcast. My nerves of being in
:47:48. > :47:53.the hot seat for the first time were amplified by a restricted view
:47:53. > :47:57.from my commentary position and an unreleebl TV monitor. But somehow
:47:57. > :48:05.we got through and told the story of the victory, the first clear
:48:05. > :48:15.favourite to win for 33 years. For jockey Gerry Scott it was quite a
:48:15. > :48:17.
:48:17. > :48:25.feat, having broken his collarbone a fortnight earlier. 25 yards to go.
:48:25. > :48:31.Merriment is the winner of the National.
:48:31. > :48:41.And we've got a fair few more of the memories of Sir Peter over
:48:41. > :48:45.
:48:45. > :48:51.Sullivan to come. 1960s, JP McManus said it was the first bet he had
:48:51. > :48:57.ever had, at nine years old. We are ready for the next race, the
:48:57. > :49:07.four-year-old Juvenile Hurdle. A total of 11 runners here. 8 and
:49:07. > :49:07.
:49:07. > :50:07.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 66 seconds
:50:07. > :50:13.betting race this. Hinterland is well backed, 8s into 7. But the
:50:13. > :50:18.National is two days away. I've had a text, if you want to bet each way
:50:18. > :50:23.Bet Victor are going the first six places on the Grand National.
:50:23. > :50:28.That's with Victor Chandler on Saturday.
:50:28. > :50:33.The key form for this race comes from the Triumph Hurdle at the
:50:33. > :50:38.Cheltenham festival. This horse was favourite. This is Grumeti. Robert
:50:38. > :50:43.Thornton in the saddle. Finished a close third behind the winner,
:50:43. > :50:47.Countrywide Flame, who runs in this race. Explain why Grumeti is
:50:47. > :50:57.favourite ahead of Countrywide Flame? I don't know. He made a
:50:57. > :50:58.
:50:58. > :51:02.mistake in the last. I just think maybe John Quinn is a higher ro
:51:02. > :51:08.file trainer and they've latched on to this way. But Countrywide Flame
:51:08. > :51:18.I think was a worthy winner on the day. Alan King won this race in
:51:18. > :51:28.
:51:28. > :51:32.2007 with Catch Tammy - Katchit. Dougie is a very good pilot. This
:51:32. > :51:36.horse has travelled to Ireland, finished third in a big novice
:51:36. > :51:41.hurdle over there. Maybe that's why punters have been put off by this.
:51:41. > :51:45.He looks well. This is Dodging Bullets, now with Ruby Walsh in the
:51:45. > :51:49.saddle because Pearl Swan doesn't run. He was progressive on the flat
:51:49. > :51:53.last year, second to Grumeti at Kempton and fourth in the Triumph
:51:53. > :51:58.Hurdle last time. He was beaten four lengths. Do you think he could
:51:58. > :52:03.turn that form around, it is a different course here. Flat track
:52:03. > :52:08.will play to in horse's strengths. A good jumper and a good traveller.
:52:08. > :52:14.Very often Cheltenham form is not fold up here at Aintree but there's
:52:14. > :52:18.been an extra week's gap, so that trend could be broken. Sadler's
:52:18. > :52:27.Risk was at one time favourite for the Triumph Hurdle after he won on
:52:27. > :52:34.his hurdles debut at temp. Finished sixth. He was fancied by the team
:52:34. > :52:38.on that occasion. A lot of people remembered that good win at Kempton.
:52:38. > :52:45.He looked very good there. I think Hinterland is very interesting.
:52:45. > :52:51.They think a lot of Hinterland at the Paul Nicholls's yard. He's been
:52:51. > :52:56.compared to Le Duc. This horse I think is the one that
:52:56. > :53:01.could be the one to take the race. A good strong type. A real chaser
:53:01. > :53:08.for the future, this fellla. I like the look of this horse. The fact he
:53:08. > :53:12.hasn't been to Cheltenham shouldn't harm him here. Gottany O's was
:53:12. > :53:16.picked up by Tom Segal in the Racing Post this morning.
:53:16. > :53:21.Disappointing in his first two starts. He's got to come back to
:53:22. > :53:27.form, but keep on eye on Gottany O's. I'm sure he will have been a
:53:28. > :53:35.mover in the markets. He is 16-1, a decent enough price. Let's head up
:53:35. > :53:41.to Jim McGrath. Very interesting. Bradbury's rider
:53:41. > :53:48.is out of the saddle. Just adjuthing the tack. Grumeti, the 5-
:53:48. > :53:58.2 favourite. Countrywide Flame 4-1. Dodging Bullets the same place.
:53:58. > :54:01.Sadler's Risk 9-2 and 15 -1 Hinterland. You were asking why
:54:01. > :54:07.should Grumeti be favourite ahead of Countrywide Flame. I think he
:54:07. > :54:12.had an interrupted preparation before Cheltenham. He stepped on a
:54:12. > :54:18.nail I think at a crucial stage of his preparation. I'm not saying
:54:18. > :54:26.that it cost him victory there but it couldn't have helped. He's such
:54:26. > :54:32.a gutsy performer, Grumeti. That's him there in the maroon sleeve.
:54:32. > :54:37.He's a real tough performer off the flat. He is a horse that can really
:54:37. > :54:42.go close here, that's for sure. They are starting to walk in at the
:54:42. > :54:47.two mile and half a furlong start. Gottany O's is leading them up.
:54:47. > :54:51.They walk in very sensibly, very calmly. It won't be like this on
:54:51. > :54:56.national day in the Grand National, I can assure you. They come towards
:54:56. > :55:01.the starting point now. All very organised. All very calm. And there
:55:01. > :55:06.is the starter. That's it, they are off and running. Setting off on
:55:06. > :55:11.this two miles and half a furlong journey. Gottany O's goes on in the
:55:11. > :55:17.early stages from Countrywide Flame. On the outside Eagle Rock. Tucked
:55:17. > :55:22.in behind them is Beyeh. Sadler's Risk is further back in the field.
:55:22. > :55:26.They swing around the home straight on the first occasion. Lyvius
:55:26. > :55:35.behind. Grumeti on the inside. Bradbury is further back with
:55:36. > :55:40.Hinterland. They wereed by Dodging Bullets, who is -- they are held
:55:40. > :55:47.there by Dodging Bullets. In second Countrywide Flame on the nearside.
:55:48. > :55:52.Further back in the field behind them is Bradbury in 7th or 8
:55:52. > :55:58.position in that white cap as they continue their journey up the home
:55:58. > :56:03.straight. Beyeh tucked in behind them in third. Out wide is Eagle
:56:03. > :56:07.Rock. Sadler's Risk is further back in the field. Lyvius out wide. They
:56:07. > :56:16.are followed next by Hinterland, and in the centre Bradbury.
:56:16. > :56:22.Followed by Grumeti, who is on the inside of others. Two lengths last
:56:22. > :56:27.is Zarzal. Six to jump. The leader is Gottany O's by a length to
:56:27. > :56:30.country country. Out wide ser Eagle Rock. They swing past the judge now.
:56:30. > :56:38.Back in fourth position on the inside Beyeh, into Sadler's Risk.
:56:38. > :56:41.Half a length on the inside of Lyvius. Two lengths further back
:56:41. > :56:46.Bradbury, from Hinterland, Dodging Bullets and tsar zafrplt heading
:56:46. > :56:50.into the back. Three flights awaiting them. Gottany O's shows
:56:50. > :56:55.the way. Blazing the trail here. Tempo is good. A length-and-a-
:56:55. > :57:03.half... He's stumbled, the leader has stumbled and he's gone. Gottany
:57:03. > :57:07.O's has broken down and the rider has dismounted immediately.
:57:07. > :57:11.Unfortunate there he took a false step and broken down badly. They
:57:11. > :57:15.head towards the fifth. On the outside Eagle Rock has taken up a
:57:15. > :57:21.narrow lead from Countrywide Flame. Just behind them Lyvius in third.
:57:22. > :57:25.There's a faller! Hinterland has gone! They continue their journey
:57:25. > :57:29.towards flight number six is. Hinterland is on his feet and
:57:30. > :57:35.galloping up the field. Just looking back down the track there
:57:35. > :57:42.Noel Fehily looks as if he may be winded. Attendants are rushing over
:57:42. > :57:45.to him. He's on his knees. They head now towards the side of the
:57:45. > :57:52.track. Countrywide Flame shows the way from on the outside Eagle Rock.
:57:52. > :57:55.Two way Lyvius from Sadler's Risk, two lengths then to Grumeti. A gap
:57:55. > :57:59.to Bradbury, followed by Dodging Bullets, who hasn't picked up.
:57:59. > :58:04.Zarzal is well back. Beyeh has gone back through the field. Heading
:58:04. > :58:06.towards the entrance of the home straight. It is the Triumph Hurdle
:58:06. > :58:10.winner Countrywide Flame who shows the way. Half a length to Eagle
:58:10. > :58:15.Rock on the outside. On the outside looming up now is Lyvius for the
:58:15. > :58:20.Henderson stable. Just in behind them is Sadler's Risk, followed by
:58:20. > :58:26.Grumeti, who is three out and it is on the far side Countrywide Flame,
:58:26. > :58:30.who land in the lead. Grumeti, in behind them is Eagle Rock, followed
:58:30. > :58:35.by Sadler's Risk at the second last. Countrywide Flame got through the
:58:35. > :58:38.top of that OK. Landed running but here's Grumeti, challenging on the
:58:38. > :58:41.nearside. They are four or five lengths clear now. They come over
:58:41. > :58:45.to gallop together towards the last. Grumeti on the nearside from
:58:45. > :58:48.Countrywide Flame. They take take it together. They touchdown
:58:48. > :58:52.together. Grumeti on the near side. Countrywide Flame on the far side.
:58:52. > :58:58.8 lengths to Eagle Rock. It is Grumeti and Countrywide Flame who
:58:58. > :59:02.settle down to fight it out. Grumeti showing a bit more. Grumeti
:59:02. > :59:07.pilling it out as they come towards the line. Grumeti wins in dogged
:59:07. > :59:12.style. Three parts of a length to Countrywide Flame. About 25 lengths
:59:12. > :59:17.then to Sadler's Risk in third. On the outside in fourth is Eagle Rock
:59:17. > :59:21.from Zarzal, who made up some good ground. Further back in the field
:59:21. > :59:28.was Dodging Bullets, Lyvius, Beyeh and then Bradbury. They are the
:59:28. > :59:33.only finishers. Alan King, the winning trainer, and choc Thornton
:59:33. > :59:38.the winning rider on number six Grumeti, owned by the McNeill
:59:38. > :59:42.family. Third in the triumph and today with a trouble-free run
:59:42. > :59:47.throughout. Ridden patiently by Robert Thornton. Second is number
:59:47. > :59:51.two, Countrywide Flame. Ran with honour, but not quite good enough.
:59:51. > :59:57.Dougie Costello. Third number 11, Sadler's Risk, ridden by Dicky
:59:57. > :00:04.Johnson. Fourth is number 4, Eagle Rock, James Reveley. Grumeti. What
:00:04. > :00:12.a tougher he is. He's a horse who made... There was a little blip
:00:12. > :00:22.earlier in his career when he fell at Newbury. But after that he's
:00:22. > :00:26.
:00:26. > :00:30.really come along, proven himself Countrywide Flame. Grumeti getting
:00:30. > :00:40.home from Countrywide Flame. Punters had it right, they sorted
:00:40. > :00:41.
:00:41. > :00:46.it out. Third, Sadler's Swan at 9 - - Saddlary's Risk.
:00:47. > :00:49.The faith of pubters rewarded there, a battling win from Grumeti beating
:00:49. > :00:54.Countrywide Flame who's run brilliantly. Went for home a long
:00:54. > :00:59.way out and got collared in the last sort of quarter of a furlong.
:00:59. > :01:03.A horrible accident there for Gottany O's on the flat, not at a
:01:03. > :01:07.hurdle. I am afraid that's bad news for them and awful day for Donald
:01:07. > :01:11.McCain and Jason Maguire and all those involved with Gottany O's. A
:01:11. > :01:17.fall as well for Hinterland as he was coming up to challenge. These
:01:17. > :01:21.front two pulled a long way clear. They're two good horses. It was an
:01:21. > :01:25.odd race, Gottany O's was not firing and when Chuck brought him
:01:25. > :01:30.through he was tough. But Dougie brought Countrywide Flame over from
:01:30. > :01:34.way off him, to go and challenge him. That may have helped Grumeti
:01:34. > :01:39.because it made him challenge. Some horses if they're wide apart don't
:01:39. > :01:43.fight as well. Together they fight. Well done to Alan King. He had a
:01:43. > :01:47.winnerless Cheltenham but lots of placed horses. The stables are in
:01:47. > :01:51.good form. If you were fancying West End Rocker for the Grand
:01:51. > :01:54.National, that also trained by Alan King. We can have another look at
:01:54. > :01:58.these two battling up the finishing strait. Countrywide Flame was a bit
:01:58. > :02:01.awkward at the second last hurdle. That didn't help him. I am not sure
:02:01. > :02:11.it would have made a difference if he had winged it, but who knows, in
:02:11. > :02:13.
:02:13. > :02:20.the end it looks like a length between the two of them. The winner
:02:20. > :02:27.by Sacki. I don't know if you notice, Dodging Bullets is bred by
:02:27. > :02:34.Eldetori. I did know that. I am sure looking at that ground that it
:02:34. > :02:38.is good. Yeah, and sometimes the accidents that can happen with
:02:38. > :02:42.horses during a race, no fault. That's just within of those things.
:02:42. > :02:52.That could have happened on the gallops at home and it's not a
:02:52. > :02:53.
:02:53. > :03:00.fault of the ground. Those Noel, who had a fall on Hinterland.
:03:00. > :03:05.think he was winded at the time and that was a picture of the owner.
:03:05. > :03:09.Let's hear from the winning trainer Alan King with Ian.
:03:09. > :03:13.We are going to have a quick word before the horse comes back. You
:03:13. > :03:16.have made a habit of winning this race. Is that three? Yeah, I was
:03:16. > :03:20.worried leaving and turning in, I think he was travelling well. He is
:03:20. > :03:23.a horse that shows a lot of pace at home but don't know where he went
:03:23. > :03:29.to today. He battled on well and that's the right horse, triumph
:03:29. > :03:32.winner and they've a long way clear. They have and the Aintree surface,
:03:32. > :03:35.the track would be better for him than Cheltenham? Possibly. I was
:03:36. > :03:40.surprised he didn't travel better than he did really. He is a horse
:03:40. > :03:44.that shows a lot of speed at home. I am still getting to know him.
:03:44. > :03:51.Here is your winner, go and get him. Thank you very much.
:03:51. > :04:00.Distance there were one length and 21 lengths, so so they were a long
:04:00. > :04:05.way ahead of Sadler's Risk. His two previous winners, Alan King, Catch
:04:05. > :04:14.It and Walk On, who raced in these colours as well, the McNeil family.
:04:14. > :04:17.That was only three years ago, 2009. Chuck Thornton in the saddle on
:04:17. > :04:21.that occasion. I think this horse even has more potential than those
:04:22. > :04:31.horses. I think he is tougher. I think he is a really good
:04:32. > :04:46.
:04:46. > :04:56.constitution. A real fighter. So, winner, Grumeti for the champion
:04:56. > :04:58.
:04:58. > :05:04.hurdle next year with Ladbrokes, as lows as 16-1 and 14, William Hill.
:05:04. > :05:07.The first two favourites have obliged here at the Aintree Grand
:05:08. > :05:12.National festival. Big Buck's winning the first and Grumeti
:05:12. > :05:18.winning the second. He is a tough horse this. He is, but interesting
:05:18. > :05:21.to see Chuck Thornton's long hair, because he shaved it all off, had
:05:21. > :05:26.no luck. So he has grown it and here he is in the winners'
:05:26. > :05:30.enclosure. It's working so far. And this - the horse is being washed
:05:30. > :05:34.down immediately the races are finished. There have been various
:05:34. > :05:38.improvements here to the post-race care of horses. Rishi can explain
:05:38. > :05:41.more about that. Indeed, that's right. After last
:05:41. > :05:46.year's Grand National a number of new safety measures were
:05:46. > :05:50.incorporated. One is this new fantastic washdown areas where the
:05:50. > :05:53.horses are then given water to drink and also there is a spray
:05:53. > :05:58.here, a cooling spray similar to what's used in the world of
:05:58. > :06:00.eventing and showjumping where horses' body temperatures are
:06:00. > :06:04.cooled down with this spray. It's not going to be needed I imagine
:06:04. > :06:09.for the next three days because it's cool already. But you can see
:06:09. > :06:13.the horses here. Some of the trainers saying what a great idea,
:06:13. > :06:23.great facility. But there are also changes to the course itself as
:06:23. > :06:29.
:06:29. > :06:32.fence which has been raised which is in keeping with all the fences
:06:32. > :06:36.on the course. Is this a good move? I think it's a very good move.
:06:37. > :06:41.Probably one of the best changes to raise that board. It helps riders
:06:41. > :06:44.and horses judge their stride and I think it's a good thing.
:06:44. > :06:48.The main point to make that a specific to the first fence is the
:06:48. > :06:52.fact the landing area has been levelled and raised fractionally.
:06:52. > :06:56.It's been raised a little bit. It's more level here. I don't really
:06:56. > :07:06.think it's going to make too much difference. Speed here that gets
:07:06. > :07:08.
:07:08. > :07:12.horses in trouble and gets them on statistically one of the most
:07:12. > :07:16.difficult to tpherblt - 4th fence. They've lowered the fence by two
:07:16. > :07:20.inches, it's four foot ten, is that going to make a difference? I don't
:07:20. > :07:23.think it will make that much a difference. These These fences,
:07:23. > :07:27.four and five, I always thought the last couple of years they look a
:07:27. > :07:31.fair bit bigger, but they've taken a couple of inches off it. Looks
:07:31. > :07:41.lovely fence now. It's well presented. Hopefully shouldn't
:07:41. > :07:41.
:07:41. > :07:45.cause too many problems on Saturday. Now we are here at Becher's Brook,
:07:45. > :07:48.it has had landing area raised, what effect is this going to have
:07:48. > :07:52.on what is the most famous fence in the world? It's going to make it a
:07:52. > :07:55.easier jump. You can't get away from it. The ground's been raised a
:07:55. > :08:00.good four or five inches. The drop is not going to catch as many
:08:00. > :08:04.horses out. But down there over in the corner there's still a
:08:04. > :08:07.significant drop. On the inside? Yeah the inside. I can see on
:08:07. > :08:12.Saturday more of the lads will probably be just looking towards
:08:12. > :08:16.it's middle of the fence to be on the safe side probably.
:08:16. > :08:20.We have seen some of the changes out on the course. There are also
:08:20. > :08:24.some procedural changes. All the horses must pass a vet's inspection
:08:24. > :08:27.before competing and new criteria for horses and jockeys to meet.
:08:27. > :08:31.Richard, have there been good changes made here for you? There
:08:31. > :08:35.have. I think one or two are good changes. I think raising of those
:08:35. > :08:41.kick boards is sa good thing for both horse and rider. I am worried
:08:41. > :08:44.about the race, just how much tinkering can it take? They've
:08:44. > :08:50.changed Becher's Brook massively, it's not the fence I used to ride
:08:50. > :08:53.over and I worry about the race now. Well, I have been joined by Mick,
:08:53. > :08:58.another Grand National-winning jockey and Chris, advisory to
:08:58. > :09:02.Aintree. We heard from Richard saying he is still concerned about
:09:02. > :09:05.the quality of this race and what the changes mean to the actual
:09:06. > :09:10.status of the Grand National. What are your thoughts? The thing is I
:09:10. > :09:13.don't want anything to detract from the race as it is. As far as I am
:09:13. > :09:17.concerned it is the world's greatest steeplechase, that's the
:09:17. > :09:24.way I want it to remain. You can see why they've made changes, but
:09:24. > :09:27.it takes away a little bit of the allure. Now you don't have to be
:09:28. > :09:33.that brave any more, they're all going to pack together. They all
:09:33. > :09:42.will not want to give away any ground. Chris, we chatted earlier
:09:42. > :09:46.about how many measures Aintree and the BHA have put in place. We saw -
:09:46. > :09:49.Gottany O's was sadly put down after that fall. There is an
:09:49. > :09:53.element of risk that will never be taken away from the sport.
:09:53. > :09:56.course there is. Racing is a competitive sport. Just as in any
:09:56. > :10:00.competitive sport Formula One racing, athletics, football, which
:10:00. > :10:05.ever sport you care to look at, there's risk attached to it. What
:10:05. > :10:08.Aintree is absolutely passionate about, in conjunction with the BHA,
:10:08. > :10:12.the authority that look after the regulations of the sport, they're
:10:12. > :10:15.very, very keen to make this as safe as possible. We can identify
:10:15. > :10:20.risks, if we can identify them we can mitigate them and make it as
:10:20. > :10:25.safe as possible for horses to compete. And the challenge is doing
:10:25. > :10:31.that without detracking from what Mick -- detract from what Mick
:10:31. > :10:34.described as the allure. We want to make it a safe challenge. We were
:10:34. > :10:37.watching the the conditions here and lots of different measures and
:10:37. > :10:40.a lot of trainers are saying how great this particular facility is.
:10:40. > :10:43.What are your thoughts on what you have seen? I am really pleased.
:10:43. > :10:47.It's a very impressive structure. The fact they've a dedicated area
:10:47. > :10:50.where the horses can come and get treated as well. What I would like
:10:50. > :10:54.to know is when we see a horse fall outside there on the track, where
:10:54. > :10:58.does it go because the viewers at home see the horse fall and where
:10:58. > :11:03.does it go to get aftercare? have a fleet of horse ambulances
:11:03. > :11:07.out there who are able to bring the horses back in a safe fashion. The
:11:07. > :11:10.vet surgeons in the field will put bandages on or suitable support or
:11:11. > :11:16.even administer medication so that the trip back to the course stables
:11:16. > :11:22.is safe. We then have a team of three vets working in the stables
:11:23. > :11:27.who will then assess that horse and treat the horse as necessary. If it
:11:27. > :11:33.needs specialist diagnostics done we can X-ray, if it needs more or
:11:33. > :11:39.surgery, for example, it can be transported to the University of
:11:39. > :11:42.Liverpool Equine Hospital. One of the best facilities in the country,
:11:42. > :11:47.if not the world. What we have here for horse and rider in terms of
:11:47. > :11:52.safety measures is as good as there And every improvement is hugely
:11:52. > :11:57.welcomed. Grumeti there having a good shake. Look at those ears go,
:11:57. > :12:01.after winning the juvenile hurdle. Owned by the McNeil family. And his
:12:01. > :12:06.wife and his daughter are there to receive the trophy. It was
:12:06. > :12:10.presented by John Mills, the chairman of Matalan.
:12:10. > :12:13.For the jockeys who are here over the three days it's a working day
:12:13. > :12:18.for them, so it's very hard for them to reveal their personality
:12:18. > :12:23.and joke around or laugh because they've serious jobs to do in there,
:12:23. > :12:26.in terms of riding horses and up to six in the one day. There is AP
:12:26. > :12:30.preparing for the first ride of the day on Burton Port. We thought we
:12:30. > :12:40.would take the opportunity of asking them key questions, really
:12:40. > :12:40.
:12:40. > :12:48.important questions to see if we could spark a little fun.
:12:48. > :12:53.Austin Powers. Mr Bean. People say I look like him. Colin Farrell.
:12:53. > :12:58.John Wayne. Dustin Hoffman. Brad Pitt, for obvious reasons. George
:12:58. > :13:07.Clooney looks most like like me with the hair. Tom cruise. Rowan
:13:07. > :13:14.Atkinson. Tom Cruise. Someone very small. Boring person I would think.
:13:14. > :13:21.Adam, Ian Beale in EastEnders. definitely. Starring as himself.
:13:21. > :13:28.is not short of confidence, Matt bachelor. Already his goggles down.
:13:28. > :13:34.He is on board Carruthers in the next race. Also today on the first
:13:34. > :13:38.day of this Festival a new initiative - a continuation of last
:13:38. > :13:43.year, a Hall of Fame to celebrate people who have added to the
:13:43. > :13:50.success of the Grand National. The nominations were the people of
:13:50. > :13:54.Liverpool, John Burgess, a vet here for 38 years and Maureen, a devoted
:13:54. > :13:58.fan. Two of them up there, John and Maureen next to him and the people
:13:58. > :14:02.of Liverpool, everybody here from the city, recognised as well. They
:14:02. > :14:07.were nominated by Mick Fitzgerald. The runners for the next making
:14:08. > :14:13.their way to the paddock. It's a quality race. Here is Jim with the
:14:13. > :14:17.full list. Here are the runners and riders:
:14:17. > :14:23.Burton Port, fourth in the Gold Cup last time and AP McCoy in the
:14:23. > :14:30.saddle on this Nicky Henderson- trained chaser.
:14:30. > :14:34.Carruthers, great favourite. Won the Hennessy last November.
:14:34. > :14:42.Blinkered for the first time. Diamond Harry, very lightly raced.
:14:42. > :14:51.He's not won for 16 months. Follow The Plan, over from Ireland.
:14:51. > :15:00.A grade one winner at at Punchtown. Hunt Ball, won seven race this is
:15:00. > :15:04.season and gone up 85lb in the handicap.
:15:04. > :15:09.Master Of The Hall, this horse likes small fields.
:15:09. > :15:14.Medermit, he has promised plenty over the years. Third in the
:15:14. > :15:24.Ryanair. Nacarat, the grey, he loves bowling
:15:24. > :15:30.along and won the race in First Chase last time. Riverside Theatre,
:15:30. > :15:40.winner of the Ryanair. Barry Geraghty in the saddle. Roberto
:15:40. > :15:40.
:15:40. > :15:50.Goldback, second in the Irish Hennessy last time. And What A
:15:50. > :16:10.
:16:10. > :16:17.Friend, Ruby Walsh takes the ride remarkable this year, won at
:16:17. > :16:24.Folkestone off 69, he's got a colourful owner. Hunt Ball. It is
:16:24. > :16:29.right what you said about Tilt of the ring. Usually they've got
:16:29. > :16:35.minimum Stakes up. They've all got pictures of Anthony, not the owner.
:16:35. > :16:41.What a fantastic story, Hunt Ball. Kite win today. Only 11-2. There's
:16:41. > :16:45.money for it. The most extraordinary horse in this race is
:16:45. > :16:50.Hunt Ball. He has improved more than any other jumps horse ever in
:16:50. > :16:55.training, by a total of 6 stone and 1 pound. All horses are rated and
:16:55. > :17:01.that equals a Handicap race. This horse has gone up and up if
:17:01. > :17:07.Handicap. Now running in the highest quality race he has ever
:17:07. > :17:13.contested. Rear Ron Burke has the rare accolade of training and
:17:13. > :17:17.running a festival winner with this horse. He is owned by this man,
:17:17. > :17:23.Anthony Knot. Explain what this horse means to you and the fun
:17:23. > :17:27.you've had this year. It is undescribable what's happened. We
:17:27. > :17:35.started off at Folkestone and the rest is history. He's taken off.
:17:35. > :17:39.When we went to Cheltenham, it was, well, I still can't come to grips
:17:39. > :17:43.with it. I'm getting a bit emotional about it. It is getting
:17:43. > :17:48.to me a little bit. I hope he doesn't fall, comes back in one
:17:48. > :17:54.piece. We believe he can do it today. He's changed your life,
:17:54. > :17:58.emotionally but financially as well? Yes, he has. I'm a dairy
:17:58. > :18:04.farmer and the farming hasn't been very good. He's literally turned
:18:04. > :18:09.the whole job around for me. only did you pick up the prize
:18:10. > :18:16.money but you back him with big cash? I put my money where my mouth
:18:16. > :18:22.is. We've backed him last week at 10-1. We believe he can go and do
:18:22. > :18:26.it in style. You really think he can win this, what going from home
:18:26. > :18:31.from a long way out? A lot of the horses today aren't going to stay.
:18:31. > :18:36.We are going to try to take it four out and take the sting out of them
:18:36. > :18:42.and coast home. It can't be that easy can it? We believe he can do
:18:42. > :18:48.it. Your celebrations have been a bit superb. You got a 100 fine for
:18:48. > :18:52.jumping on his back earlier in the year. You didn't jump on him at
:18:52. > :18:57.Cheltenham but you were revving up the crowd. It's a pleasure. I
:18:57. > :19:02.really enjoy it. I got a bit carried away at Wincanton but
:19:02. > :19:05.that's what it's all about at the end of the day. Hopefully we'll
:19:05. > :19:14.have another celebration. It doesn't matter what he does today.
:19:14. > :19:19.We've had a whale of a time. If he wins today we are talking
:19:19. > :19:24.about a serious Gold Cup horse for next year. Very much so. I've
:19:24. > :19:31.backed him 50-1 for the Gold Cup next year. He's here today to see
:19:31. > :19:38.if we can check the trip out. We believe he is going to keep the
:19:38. > :19:47.trip today. Big credit to rear Ron Burke and the Nick. And to you
:19:47. > :19:53.Anthony. Thank you very much indeed. Fabulous. Rishi is up there with
:19:53. > :19:59.his eagle I on the paddock. -- eye on the paddock.
:19:59. > :20:07.Horse number 8, Nacarat, the grey. He is a past winner of this race.
:20:07. > :20:12.He's been in tremendous form and won at Wincanton. He won the Racing
:20:12. > :20:16.Post Cup there. He's going greyer every year but he looks well and
:20:16. > :20:22.fit. Another horse who looks well and fit is number 3, Diamond Harry,
:20:22. > :20:31.who ran in the Gold Cup. He was pulled up earlier in the season. He
:20:31. > :20:38.ran behind Kauto Star and long run. Had Hennessy 2012. He's on his toes
:20:38. > :20:44.and is in good form. They are all looking in top form. Let's talk
:20:44. > :20:53.about number nine, Riverside Theatre. He is owned by actor James
:20:53. > :20:59.Nesbitt. He ran a courageous race in the Ryanair. It may have
:20:59. > :21:04.something to do with the bounce factor. I like Burton Port. I
:21:05. > :21:11.thought he looked very well. Certainly AP's horse could take a
:21:11. > :21:17.bit of beating. We are going to join clarity.
:21:17. > :21:25.One of the most recognisable colours at Aintree is this man.
:21:25. > :21:30.This must be your favourite meeting of the year. It is. It is one of my
:21:30. > :21:37.favourite holidays. The final finale. Burton Port, your horse, is
:21:37. > :21:40.a high class steeplechaser. Yes. It's his third run today isn't it?
:21:40. > :21:45.Yes. He had 400 days off through a strain on the leg. He's coming back.
:21:45. > :21:51.He should be a lot better today. He ran a little bit flat in the middle
:21:51. > :21:54.of the Gold Cup, which would be unusual for him. But that's what
:21:54. > :22:01.happens with horses. A top class horse. On Saturday Ballabriggs
:22:01. > :22:11.going for a second. Your third and his second Grand National! He is a
:22:11. > :22:27.
:22:27. > :22:32.Burton Port in this. Thank you very much indeed. Alex Ferguson, a joint
:22:32. > :22:42.owner of What A Friend in this line-up of talented horses. They
:22:42. > :22:42.
:22:42. > :23:31.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 66 seconds
:23:31. > :23:41.bit, who is away filming at the close-up shot of him. Barry
:23:41. > :24:08.
:24:08. > :24:18.Geraghty getting him sorted and Diamond Harry won it in 2010 from
:24:18. > :24:27.
:24:27. > :24:32.Burton Port. He's got to get back but he has a bit to find. This is
:24:32. > :24:40.Hunt Ball. He's been beaten just once in seven starts and unbeaten
:24:40. > :24:50.in his last four. Behind them the red colours of mast mast. Ridden by
:24:50. > :24:54.
:24:54. > :25:04.Andrew Tinkler. He went to Kelso without actually managing to win.
:25:04. > :25:25.
:25:25. > :25:35.He was only beaten a length the the horse who managed the win the
:25:35. > :25:36.
:25:36. > :27:05.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 66 seconds
:27:06. > :27:15.Goldblack, this horse only has one Henderson, because Nicholls always
:27:16. > :27:16.
:27:16. > :28:30.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 66 seconds
:28:30. > :28:35.has Big Buck's in first. In terms The fences at this meeting. It is a
:28:35. > :28:40.tight course at Aintree. Very flat. Very different to Cheltenham.
:28:40. > :28:44.That's why the form can turn around. Medermit, who was third behind
:28:44. > :28:47.Riverside Theatre, you were talking about Alan King, how close he got
:28:47. > :28:53.to having a winner at the Cheltenham festival without doing
:28:53. > :28:56.it. This is a lovely horse, run sog well. His last two runs behind
:28:56. > :29:04.Riverside Theatre. This is a flatter track to Cheltenham. The
:29:04. > :29:14.track is different. That could make a different result. Those are the
:29:14. > :29:16.
:29:16. > :29:20.colours of the... Look at Carruthers in between. That's
:29:20. > :29:24.interesting. Carruthers is wearing blinkers, not because he isn't a
:29:24. > :29:34.genuine horse but they are worried about him losing his nerve a bit.
:29:34. > :29:34.
:29:34. > :29:42.They've put the blinkers on to help him feel for secure. He schools at
:29:42. > :29:50.my school. Sarah rides him twice a day, sometimes three times a day.
:29:50. > :30:00.So he is as fit as anything. He rode such a good race in the
:30:00. > :30:02.
:30:02. > :30:07.Hennessy. A wonderful moment. blifpbgers are kite open --
:30:07. > :30:12.blinkers are quite open Cups. A Friend wears them because they do
:30:12. > :30:22.want him to concentrate a little harder. He is a little like Tidal
:30:22. > :30:25.
:30:25. > :30:28.Bay in that he doesn't always look fantastic value afterwards.
:30:28. > :30:32.Riverside Theatre going through. They look as if they're getting
:30:32. > :30:37.ready to make their way to the start. Let's join Jim McGrath.
:30:37. > :30:47.Thank you, Clare. Down at the start, let's look at
:30:47. > :30:49.
:30:49. > :30:57.the betting just as they're taking a final turn. Riverside Theatre 7-2.
:30:57. > :31:01.Mick joining me here. And Sir Alex Ferguson. He will be cheering home
:31:01. > :31:06.what -- What A Friend. A few Liverpool fans jeering there as
:31:06. > :31:09.they saw his image on the big screen. Away they go for this
:31:09. > :31:14.Betfred Bowl. Three miles and a furlong. Nacarat took them over the
:31:14. > :31:18.first and landed in good style from Hunt Ball up there. On the far side
:31:18. > :31:22.Carruthers and just settling behind them Medermit. They head towards
:31:22. > :31:27.the second. An open ditch. It's Nacarat who goes to it and jumps
:31:27. > :31:30.well, from Carruthers. Up in third place on the outside is Hunt Ball.
:31:30. > :31:34.They come up the strait on the first occasion. Well over two
:31:34. > :31:38.circuits to go. Burton Port in the centre. Medermit on the far side.
:31:38. > :31:41.Behind them Diamond Harry, followed by What A Friend. They're followed
:31:41. > :31:47.by Follow The Plan, from Roberto Goldback, and on the near side is
:31:47. > :31:52.Riverside Theatre. All over safely. Master Of The Hall is last. Two
:31:52. > :31:56.circuits to go. Carruthers gets through on the inside to take a
:31:56. > :32:00.narrow lead now, from Nacarat. A length and a half to Hunt Ball,
:32:00. > :32:05.travelling in the centre. Pace is good. On the outside Diamond Harry.
:32:05. > :32:09.In the centre Burton Port, followed by Medermit. Followed further back
:32:09. > :32:18.then by What A Friend on the outside of Follow The Plan. Then
:32:18. > :32:21.Roberto Goldback, and towards the rear Riverside Theatre. Last is
:32:21. > :32:26.Master Of The Hall. Into the back now. Heading towards fence number
:32:26. > :32:30.four. Carruthers on the inside, draws towards it, has a good look
:32:30. > :32:34.and got over it in spectacular style. All over safely. Nacarat
:32:34. > :32:40.jumped second. Third then Burton Port on the outside. Half a length
:32:40. > :32:43.further back is Hunt Ball, followed further back on the outside by
:32:43. > :32:47.Diamond Harry. They come to the fifth. Further back is What A
:32:47. > :32:52.Friend, from Follow The Plan, Roberto Goldback, further back then
:32:52. > :32:58.is Riverside Theatre. Two lengths last is Master Of The Hall. Second
:32:58. > :33:03.open ditch. Carruthers jumped it well. Lands over it in good style,
:33:03. > :33:07.from Nacarat. In third is Medermit, followed by Burton Port. Out wide
:33:07. > :33:13.are Hunt Ball, who is very handy as they go over the sendth. They all
:33:13. > :33:16.jump it well. Preparing to lead the back. The pace is good, Mick.
:33:16. > :33:21.Carruthers enjoying himself there. The first time he has had things
:33:21. > :33:24.his own way this way. Riverside Theatre on the outside, about 7th,
:33:24. > :33:31.Barry Geraghty having to work hard on this horse. He did at Cheltenham
:33:31. > :33:36.but it looks like he is not that comfortable. He is on the outside.
:33:36. > :33:40.Over the 8th. Carruthers sailed over it. Jumping extravagantly.
:33:40. > :33:44.Last is Master Of The Hall. Carruthers on the inside, from
:33:44. > :33:48.Nacarat and Burton Port, then Medermit on the inside rail. Hunt
:33:48. > :33:52.Ball is very handy. Further back then is Diamond Harry. Followed by
:33:52. > :33:58.Follow The Plan, and What A Friend. Further back in the field Riverside
:33:58. > :34:02.Theatre. They go over the 9th. Master Of The Hall jumps really
:34:03. > :34:07.stickily in last position. Up towards the open ditch number ten.
:34:07. > :34:10.Carruthers on the inside who blazes the trail, with Nacarat on his
:34:10. > :34:15.outside. On the outside joining in as well Hunt Ball, who is

:34:31. > :34:34.side. They come to the 11th now. They jump that in about third or
:34:34. > :34:39.fourth last position. Barry Geraghty getting to work on
:34:39. > :34:43.Riverside Theatre. Not getting a response. Last is Master Of The
:34:43. > :34:46.Hall. The alarm bells are ringing for Riverside Theatre. And ringing
:34:47. > :34:50.very loudly as well because he goes into this bend on the outside here
:34:50. > :34:54.and if you are not travelling here at Aintree it's very difficult to
:34:54. > :34:58.make up any ground because the horses don't come back to you. We
:34:58. > :35:02.can see Barry Geraghty, you know he won't give up. Master Of The Hall
:35:02. > :35:05.just nipped past him travelling well. Medermit has been eye-
:35:05. > :35:08.catching too. Into the back now. Diamond Harry Diamond Harry has
:35:08. > :35:12.lost ground and dropped back through the field. Might be pulled
:35:12. > :35:15.up as they go - in fact he has been pulled up. The leaders over the
:35:15. > :35:19.12th. A mistake by Roberto Goldback, very lucky to survive that. Down
:35:19. > :35:23.the back and Nacarat has slipped the field, gone three in front now
:35:23. > :35:27.of Carruthers. Then Medermit on the inside and Riverside Theatre has
:35:27. > :35:33.been pulled up. Never travelling well at all, has been pulled up now.
:35:33. > :35:37.They head down the back. So, heading towards the second last
:35:37. > :35:42.open ditch. Nacarat by three lengths, Medermit, on the outside
:35:42. > :35:45.Hunt Ball running a great race and jumped up into second now. Behind
:35:45. > :35:49.them is Follow The Plan. Followed by Carruthers, dropping back
:35:49. > :35:54.through the field. They come to five out. Burton Port is there out
:35:54. > :35:57.wide. A mistake there by What A Friend. Roberto Goldback is not
:35:57. > :36:01.jumping well. They prepare to leave the back now with four left to jump.
:36:01. > :36:06.The leader is Nacarat on the inside by three lengths. Hunt Ball is
:36:06. > :36:09.looming up now. Followed by Burton Port. Behind them Medermit. Three
:36:09. > :36:14.lengths to Follow The Plan. Followed by Carruthers and further
:36:14. > :36:20.back in the field as they come towards the crossed fence is
:36:20. > :36:28.Carruthers, four out. Roberto Goldback got right into that. Hunt
:36:28. > :36:32.Ball is looming up. The dream is still alive. Hunt Ball travelling
:36:32. > :36:36.well. Tom crept into this race. Three left to jump now. They
:36:36. > :36:39.straighten up for home. Nacarat in the centre. Hunt Ball on the near
:36:39. > :36:45.side the red cap coming into it. Followed by Follow The Plan. A gap
:36:45. > :36:49.then to Medermit. Burton Port. And raising an effort. They come to the
:36:49. > :36:55.last ditch, two out. Nacarat and Hunt Ball. Hunt Ball on the near
:36:55. > :36:59.side. Nacarat a clear leader over it. Followed then by Follow The
:36:59. > :37:03.Plan. Nacarat in front. Follow The Plan. The underrated Irish
:37:03. > :37:08.challenger, Follow The Plan takes it up clearly with one left to jump.
:37:08. > :37:13.Follow The Plan has gone three or four in front. Burton Port coming
:37:13. > :37:17.late. Follow The Plan comes towards it, he jumped well. He has away
:37:17. > :37:21.from it four lengths in front. Burton Port goes into second.
:37:21. > :37:27.Followed by Hunt Ball. Up towards the line it's Follow The Plan. He
:37:27. > :37:30.is going to go on and win well for Tom Tom Doyle. Second Burton Port,
:37:30. > :37:34.close third, Hunt Ball far side, Medermit near side. Followed then
:37:35. > :37:39.by Nacarat, further back is Master Of The Hall. Then What A Friend,
:37:39. > :37:49.followed by Roberto Goldback. Last to finish is Carruthers.
:37:49. > :37:50.
:37:50. > :37:55.Well, Follow The Plan, Tom Doyle. Trained by Oliver McKiernan. He has
:37:55. > :38:02.won the money. When this horse won a grade one victory last season, a
:38:02. > :38:07.lot of people saying a lucky win, but he he has proven himself high-
:38:07. > :38:11.class today. Great for Tom and Oliver. A small stable. Tom is not
:38:12. > :38:15.a bit-part jockey, but he is a journeyman. He was in Ireland for a
:38:15. > :38:21.long time and came to England, tried his luck and went back to
:38:21. > :38:25.Ireland and I am delighted for him. He took it up I think two out there.
:38:25. > :38:29.Suppose you were worried when you saw AP on Burton Port, wondering
:38:29. > :38:32.did he go too early? He definitely didn't. The winning post came in
:38:32. > :38:37.time. You can see the celebration here. For these guys to ride
:38:37. > :38:42.winners at this Festival, this is a huge prize. It's a huge race and
:38:42. > :38:52.definitely a trophy that will have pride of place on his mantelpiece.
:38:52. > :38:53.
:38:54. > :38:58.Let's check the placings: Follow The Plan a 50-1 winner of
:38:58. > :39:02.the Betfred Bowl. As they turned into the strait here
:39:02. > :39:08.at Aintree it looked as if Hunt Ball was going well enough to make
:39:08. > :39:10.the dream come true for Anthony but he started to get tired and this
:39:11. > :39:19.horse Follow The Plan was absolutely swinging for Tom Doyle
:39:19. > :39:23.and came through like he had just been turbo-boosted. Bear in mind,
:39:23. > :39:28.Follow The Plan was third behind Nacarat last year and he is going
:39:28. > :39:32.to come up alongside the grey horse and almost make it look as if he
:39:32. > :39:40.has joined him in the race, Richard. A lovely run as well. Nacarat going
:39:40. > :39:46.a little bit right. Tom has a lovely ride. What a great race Hunt
:39:46. > :39:50.Ball has run. AP's horse has stayed on very well, Burton Port. So has
:39:50. > :39:53.Medermit. Makes up a lot of ground. You can see how much Nacarat fades
:39:53. > :40:00.in the closing stages and Medermit is going to come past him. Follow
:40:00. > :40:04.The Plan in front, sees a real long one there. Given a real good ride
:40:04. > :40:12.into the last there. The horse is brave. Just pushed him out to the
:40:12. > :40:22.line and AP's horse has got tired near the post funny sort of race
:40:22. > :40:22.
:40:22. > :40:30.really. He certainly has the trip. You can see the cheekpieces there,
:40:30. > :40:34.not as well as blinkers. And toyy - - Anthony there watching, believing
:40:34. > :40:38.it might happen. But they will be thrilled with finishing third in
:40:38. > :40:47.the first grade one and you can see there he now knows that he has got
:40:47. > :40:52.a horse of real quality in the yard. This is the horse who has collected
:40:52. > :40:59.the spoils and greeted with almost silence by the punters because none
:40:59. > :41:02.of them picked him, Jim. A worthy winner just the same. Follow The
:41:02. > :41:05.Plan, Tom Doyle, run out a very comfortable winner. Riverside
:41:05. > :41:09.Theatre pulled up, never travelling. As Mick was saying, never
:41:09. > :41:14.travelling at all. The other one who was pulled up, Diamond Harry.
:41:14. > :41:19.Pulled up a long way out and both of them were struggling a long way
:41:20. > :41:25.from home. This winner, Follow The Plan, always going well. Tom Doyle
:41:25. > :41:35.is coming back here in triumph after winning the big grade one
:41:35. > :41:40.here today, the bed--- Betfred Bowl Chase. Ladies and gentlemen, he was
:41:40. > :41:44.a 50-1 shot but he has belied those odds, jumped superbly and stayed on
:41:44. > :41:50.well to take the Betfred Bowl, please show your appreciation for
:41:50. > :42:00.Follow The Plan, owned by Oliver McKiernan - trained by Oliver and
:42:00. > :42:01.
:42:01. > :42:06.ridden by Tom Doyle. So, a great triumph for Ireland. Ireland have
:42:06. > :42:13.the biggest representation in Saturday's Grand National that I
:42:13. > :42:22.think they've had in modern times. Something like 18 runners. 50-1
:42:22. > :42:26.Follow The Plan. Well, has his run come to an end? 85lb he had gone up
:42:26. > :42:31.in the ratings, which is staggering for any horse to improve that much.
:42:31. > :42:38.Hunt Ball when he loomed up there he was just starting to feel it,
:42:38. > :42:44.wasn't he, in the home strait? Starting to struggle a bit. It was
:42:44. > :42:47.obvious that just in this higher grade, although he has run
:42:47. > :42:51.creditably, he's been found out. There might be improvement in it,
:42:51. > :42:56.he has had a long season and he is certainly well up to the standard,
:42:56. > :43:03.that's for sure. Here is Tom Doyle. Let's look at him. Hands and heels
:43:03. > :43:07.now. He has put the whip down. He is over the last, I presume that is.
:43:07. > :43:11.Let's see him, there he is. Looks at the screen now. He knows he is
:43:11. > :43:19.well clear. He has just to keep this horse going, and he's done
:43:19. > :43:23.that really well. Really good ride and a great win for Ireland.
:43:23. > :43:27.It is a great win for Ireland and the trainer is on the other side of
:43:27. > :43:31.Follow The Plan. Tom Doyle and connections having photos taken and
:43:31. > :43:37.I am going to pop around the other side, don't want to disturb the
:43:37. > :43:45.photo, of course, I don't even want to be in the photo! There we go.
:43:45. > :43:55.Let's grab a word with Oliver. Photos are still taking place. This
:43:55. > :43:55.
:43:56. > :44:00.is a big moment for the team. 50-1, let's find out what Oliver -
:44:00. > :44:02.can I grab you for a quick word. Many congratulations, the punters
:44:02. > :44:07.didn't think he had a massive chance. What did you think going
:44:07. > :44:12.into the race? Well, I mean, we followed the same plan as last year.
:44:12. > :44:17.We came here before, more or less said we might do the same again
:44:17. > :44:21.this year. That was it. I tell now, the ground drying out a lot helped
:44:21. > :44:25.our horse. He is not a horse that goes that well on soft ground. So,
:44:25. > :44:29.the race then probably materialised out of it or whatever, that you
:44:29. > :44:33.know, he is not a horse that can hit the front too soon and he needs
:44:33. > :44:36.to be aiming at something all the way. So, in general, you know, we
:44:36. > :44:43.are very happy. Could you imagine how well he travelled up to what
:44:43. > :44:47.was a high quality race? He had about 18lbs to make up? The way the
:44:47. > :44:50.horse was working at home and that, we had no real reason to believe he
:44:50. > :44:54.wouldn't be in with a shout and that's part of the reason he was
:44:54. > :44:58.here. But you have to say also early on in the race he was sticky
:44:58. > :45:02.at the fences, I just wasn't sure. Tom will tell you more about that.
:45:02. > :45:07.But Tom gave him a superb ride anyway and we are delighted.
:45:07. > :45:10.won the Guinness Gold Cup, where does this victory rank. Guinness
:45:10. > :45:14.Gold Cup is ten minutes down the road. It's a home track and that.
:45:14. > :45:20.But we are delighted and delighted that he was fit to do it here today.
:45:20. > :45:29.Well done. A word with your jockey now. A few sticky jumps, were you
:45:29. > :45:35.at the first but after the first he jumped great, travelled really well.
:45:35. > :45:40.I couldn't believe how well he was travelling across the bottom. I
:45:40. > :45:44.probably ended up being in front too soon, but I had to drive on. He
:45:44. > :45:47.jumped the last well. He's been a very good horse to me. I think
:45:47. > :45:53.that's three grade ones he's won now. He probably hasn't got the
:45:53. > :45:59.credit he deserves really. Could you believe how well you were going
:45:59. > :46:05.when you turned into the straight? No. I couldn't believe how easy he
:46:05. > :46:08.was finding it in jumping. From there you are just trying not to do
:46:08. > :46:12.anything wrong and do the simple things right. Is it great to be
:46:13. > :46:18.back in England with a big race winner? Yes, it is. I was here for
:46:18. > :46:28.nine years and have great friends. It is lovely to come back and ride
:46:28. > :46:40.
:46:40. > :46:47.is going back to Betfred. Definitely a bookies' race. This is
:46:47. > :46:53.not the face of a loser, because Anthony Knott, the owner of Hunt
:46:53. > :46:58.Ball, you are thrilled? Yes, he ran his little heart out. He came round
:46:58. > :47:04.the home bend and we thought he was going to take off it is a grade one
:47:04. > :47:14.at the end of the day. He's seriously done us proud. You got a
:47:14. > :47:15.
:47:15. > :47:21.bit excited didn't you? Yes. I just thought he was going to do it. He
:47:21. > :47:26.had quite a few races and he will come back a good, strong horse next
:47:26. > :47:31.year. And full steam ahead for the Gold Cup next year? Yes. Nick says
:47:31. > :47:35.he got the trip alright. Where he couldn't get a breather into him
:47:35. > :47:40.like on a flat track, but no problem with the trip. So full
:47:40. > :47:50.steam ahead for that. I'm so pleased for you. Thank you. Thank
:47:50. > :47:53.
:47:53. > :47:56.you. That was Anthony Knot, the owner of Hunt Ball. We'll be
:47:56. > :48:03.bringing you wonderful memories of the Grand National. Here is the
:48:03. > :48:09.second of them. The story of Red Rum is the
:48:09. > :48:15.ultimate fairy-tale. A triumph of sheer brilliance over adversity.
:48:15. > :48:20.Rummy had had three different trainers before ending up at Ginger
:48:20. > :48:24.McCain's Southport yard.. He had bad feet and was leading an
:48:24. > :48:28.uncomfortable life, but twist of fate led him to the man who trained
:48:28. > :48:36.on the sands of Southport beach. The transformation was remarkable.
:48:36. > :48:41.What happened next was pure Aintree magic. And so began his Grand
:48:41. > :48:51.National love affair. COMMENTATOR: At the line Red Rum has just
:48:51. > :48:51.
:48:52. > :48:57.scotched it. Red Rum is the winner. Be by ta time 1977 came around, Red
:48:58. > :49:02.Rum's legend was assured, but what followed catapulted him beyond his
:49:02. > :49:08.already iconic state us to become part of the fabric of the British
:49:08. > :49:11.nation. The hairs stood up on the back of my neck and I called out
:49:11. > :49:17.words that are as true now as they were on the famous day.
:49:17. > :49:27.COMMENTATOR: The 12 -year-old Red Rum being precede only by loose

:49:29. > :49:35.horses, Chased by Church town Boy. Red Rum wins the Grand National!
:49:35. > :49:42.Ginger McCain, may I congratulate you. What do you think of it snow
:49:42. > :49:45.think it's bloody marvellous. Super. Hear, hear, Ginger. The
:49:45. > :49:51.extraordinary record of Red Rum, who won the race three times and
:49:51. > :49:54.was second in it twice. He would have come here a sixth year but a
:49:54. > :50:00.minute injury prevented him from running. He lived a long and very
:50:00. > :50:05.happy life and opened shopping centres and was made guest
:50:05. > :50:10.appearances, turned the lights on at Blackpool Tower, and his grave
:50:10. > :50:17.is here at the winning line at Aintree. We lost Ginger in
:50:17. > :50:25.September last year. Earlier today a wust was -- bust was unveiled of
:50:25. > :50:29.Ginger McCain. His widow asked for it to be placed next to the
:50:29. > :50:35.winners' enclosure. It captures the character of the man. Part of the
:50:35. > :50:42.Red Rum legend, you finish second the first year Red Rum won in 1973.
:50:42. > :50:49.A word about that statue. It is one-and-a-half lifetime sizes which
:50:49. > :50:56.is what Ginger was. Red Rum and Ginger came along at a time when
:50:56. > :51:02.Aintree needed saving. He injected so much passion and character. And
:51:02. > :51:06.a great trainer. Amberleigh House and Ballabriggs, who lines up on
:51:06. > :51:11.Saturday. Ginger is greatly missed but will always be remembered at
:51:11. > :51:19.Aintree. We are going to have a another look at the jockeys. They
:51:19. > :51:29.don't eat a lot of food but they love to talk about it. Steak and

:52:04. > :52:08.fox-hunt fox-hunt, a report about Frankel. He's picked up a
:52:08. > :52:13.superficial injury. Henry Cecil is saying he's such an extravagant
:52:13. > :52:17.mover at home he may have knocked himself. We will monitor that and
:52:17. > :52:23.give you news as we hear it. Frankel unbeaten so far in nine
:52:23. > :52:28.races. An absolute machine. This next race is strictly forage
:52:28. > :52:32.tures only. It is their chance to take on the Grand National course
:52:32. > :52:36.and those amazing fences. Mick Fitzgerald is in the jockeys' room.
:52:36. > :52:41.We are here in the jockeys' radio. These lads are getting ready for
:52:41. > :52:51.one of the highlights of their season. This is the amateurs Grand
:52:51. > :52:54.
:52:55. > :53:04.National novices. They are all ready to go. Young James is 17. He
:53:05. > :53:05.
:53:05. > :53:12.is running on Gwanako. Sam Paint ising on The Polomoche.
:53:12. > :53:18.Launde has had a couple of golds here hasn't he? Yes, and this is
:53:18. > :53:23.third time lucky. Are you looking forward to it or nervous? Divine
:53:23. > :53:33.intervention would be great but I'm looking forward to it. The best of

:55:19. > :55:24.Smith's Fox Hunters' Chase. Cloudy Lane. This is the amateur's
:55:24. > :55:28.Grand National. Cloudy Lane is a genuine horse, full of connection.
:55:28. > :55:31.I reform think Cloudy Lane, there'll be a big cheer here.
:55:31. > :55:35.Cloudy Lane is a really good price at 6-1.
:55:35. > :55:45.There's Cloudy Lane, who started favourite for the Grand National a
:55:45. > :55:45.
:55:45. > :55:50.few years ago. How does he look to you today? He is looking well Rishi.
:55:50. > :55:56.He finished sixth in the Cheltenham. He has prove himself over the
:55:57. > :56:01.fences hasn't he, finishing sixth and eighth. One of the Irish
:56:01. > :56:08.contenders is Boxer Georg from Willie Mullins' stable.
:56:08. > :56:16.A horse who ran pretty well. Ran a crack race. Only beaten three
:56:17. > :56:21.quarters of a length. Patrick rode him. He is Chase clipped. Hopefully
:56:21. > :56:25.he'll put in another good run today. There are a few others coming
:56:25. > :56:31.around. Anything that took your eye? Having compared them with
:56:31. > :56:37.horses in the last race, there are one or two who aren't quite as hard
:56:37. > :56:47.trained as they may be. I want to look at horse number 19, Roulez
:56:47. > :56:53.
:56:53. > :56:59.Cool, with Kona Coast cone on board. - with Waley-Cohen on board.
:56:59. > :57:09.He's got a good record. Placed in the Grand National last year.
:57:09. > :57:10.
:57:10. > :57:16.24, The Polomoche. He's now trained by Marcus toly. This horse used to
:57:16. > :57:24.be at Nicky's as. He's looking well. Perhaps carrying a bit of condition,
:57:24. > :57:29.but he's been running well. I hope he handles these fence and put in a
:57:29. > :57:34.nice run. Let's look at the grey. Number 21. Silver Adonis, a past
:57:35. > :57:40.winner of this. He didn't run as well last year. He finished 7th
:57:40. > :57:44.last year. Won it the year before. He's had better preparation this
:57:44. > :57:50.year. Certainly looking well. One to consider. Just one playing up
:57:51. > :57:56.here, horse number two, this is Bow School. He backed into a couple of
:57:56. > :58:02.the other runners. He's had to be dismounted land be led out on to
:58:02. > :58:08.the course. Looking a bit on his it's. He beat Silver Adonis at
:58:08. > :58:13.Wetherby in May. He won a Handicap Hurdle to put him right for this.
:58:13. > :58:18.But he is certainly on his toes. are going to join Clare with Donald
:58:18. > :58:22.McCain. At least you have a horse you know likes the course. He's
:58:22. > :58:29.been around two or three times. He's my first good horse. I'm
:58:29. > :58:32.panicking a bit well, but he's been running well all year. The place is
:58:32. > :58:37.in terrific condition. Desperately unfortunate that your horse,
:58:37. > :58:41.Gottany O's, suffered a fatal injury. A crying shame, he did it
:58:41. > :58:45.on the bend, on the flat. It is an unfortunate circumstances of the
:58:45. > :58:51.job we do. The owners are devastated. They've come here for a
:58:51. > :58:54.fantastic day and look what happened. He has not suffered. It's
:58:54. > :58:58.been dealt. It is nobody's fault. Part of dealing with livestock I'm
:58:58. > :59:03.afraid. You had to deal with the ups and downs. Cloudy Lane could
:59:03. > :59:09.pick up the day hugely for you here. He's got an outstanding chance
:59:09. > :59:14.half. If he can get out over the first three or four and be in the
:59:14. > :59:20.first half dozen he could run an maidsing horse. He's won he some
:59:20. > :59:25.fantastic races. I hope he is is home in one piece. All good for
:59:25. > :59:35.Ballabriggs on Saturday? Yes. Looking forward to it. Thank you
:59:35. > :59:55.
:59:55. > :59:58.Donald. Thank you clarity. for the John Smith's Fox Hunters'
:59:58. > :00:03.Chase. They've just over a circuit of the Grand National course ahead
:00:03. > :00:08.of them. The Chair is the third fence. Then they make their way
:00:08. > :00:12.past the grand and out into the country. All the way down over
:00:12. > :00:18.Becher's Brook the other famous fences.
:00:18. > :00:28.Began there making his way out. James, only 17 years old, riding
:00:28. > :00:30.
:00:30. > :00:33.fences and they are different to what you would normally be jumping,
:00:33. > :00:37.the normal dark browned brush fences. These with all the green
:00:37. > :00:42.spruce. The spruce spruce does kick out, so you can jump the fence low
:00:42. > :00:47.and still kick out the top and get the other side. You can see in the
:00:48. > :00:54.background Sam Waley Cohen, riding that horse for his father who
:00:54. > :01:04.trains it and My Way De Solzen, used to be a cracking horse and has
:01:04. > :01:07.
:01:07. > :01:14.now gone hunter chasing. My Way De Solzen, a very good horse.
:01:14. > :01:18.Then lost his way and rejuvenated really by the hunter chase game.
:01:18. > :01:26.This is an interesting and difficult test this for horses
:01:26. > :01:31.because they go pretty fast down to the first fence. And Rishi, who
:01:31. > :01:39.have you got? Marcus with me, Clare, a guy who
:01:39. > :01:46.used to ride for Nicky Henderson and now training in his own right.
:01:46. > :01:51.This horse has always had ability. My ex-boss and the head lad, Corky,
:01:51. > :01:56.he has always thought a lot of him. He had a bad accident, broke his
:01:56. > :02:02.pelvis and we had him to recoup rate, it was whether he would ever
:02:02. > :02:06.come back to racing. Luckily, he has. The owner has been good to me
:02:06. > :02:09.and let me have him for pointing and hunter chasing, because it was
:02:10. > :02:13.a lower grade. He's come back and thriving. He's done well for us.
:02:13. > :02:17.And Marcus, why the switch from being a jockey to training, because
:02:17. > :02:22.you were a successful jockey, you were doing very well? It was the
:02:22. > :02:27.first time I walked that course today and thought they were small.
:02:27. > :02:31.Typical! Exactly, I think the timing was right. I had a - I
:02:31. > :02:34.wouldn't have changed what I did as a jockey and had a great career for
:02:34. > :02:38.Nicky. This was always something I wanted to do and when the
:02:38. > :02:41.opportunity came up I grabbed it and it's gone well. The Polomoche
:02:42. > :02:48.going to win? Safe around, I would like to see him there or
:02:48. > :02:52.thereabouts. Good luck. Cheers. Could go well in this., the The
:02:52. > :02:57.Polomoche. The horses are at the start and also there is Richard
:02:57. > :03:01.Pitman, have you got the old buzz down there with them? It's getting
:03:01. > :03:05.very excited. You can see in the star the orange colours, Lizzie
:03:05. > :03:10.Kelly riding for her mum. The way the riders are all grouping as they
:03:10. > :03:17.are, shows they're going to go off very fast. Now, what was amazing
:03:17. > :03:20.was that Sam Waly-Coen was going to run in the National, the horse
:03:20. > :03:24.jumped the white line by the start on the way down so he should have
:03:24. > :03:27.no trouble. The thing to tell you is the third fence is The Chair and
:03:27. > :03:32.the sun is right into their eyes going that way. It's not serious,
:03:32. > :03:37.but it's certainly going to make them think. The way they're all
:03:37. > :03:40.trotting here means it's going to be very, very fast indeed. Clare,
:03:40. > :03:45.down here I can assure you they may be amateurs, there's no money for
:03:45. > :03:48.them, but they are keen, Clare. We have our full team of
:03:48. > :03:53.commentators in place, Darren, Ian, but starting things off, of course
:03:53. > :03:58.will be Jim McGrath. And they jump a total of 18 fences
:03:58. > :04:01.here in this Fox Hunters. They're come come almost coming in. Lizzie
:04:01. > :04:06.Kelly there on Blackstaff, she wants to make a run at the tapes
:04:06. > :04:13.there. The starter has told her to take another turn.
:04:13. > :04:16.Cloudy Lane, a veteran over these fences. Emergency Cover. They're
:04:16. > :04:22.coming in now. That's it. They're ready. They're off. No, it's a
:04:22. > :04:26.false start. A false start. Very quickly the amateurs have responded.
:04:26. > :04:35.They've avoided the first fence and they have pulled up very quickly.
:04:35. > :04:38.So, no damage done. Just very, very awkward and unnecessary really.
:04:38. > :04:45.Everybody so anxious, they're all trying to get an early position.
:04:45. > :04:48.They all want to be up there. They take a real dive at it. That's
:04:48. > :04:58.Harps Counsel there in the white colours. Let's have another look at
:04:58. > :04:58.
:04:58. > :05:03.them. This is the heli-telly shot. There is a few stragglers at the
:05:03. > :05:06.back. Even some out of camera shot. The starter did the right thing. He
:05:06. > :05:12.couldn't start them when they were so far back, those others. There he
:05:12. > :05:20.is, waving the flag there. The man at the first jump waves his flag
:05:20. > :05:25.and it's a false start. We could see what was going to
:05:25. > :05:30.happen, because I am afraid Gina Andrews was flying almost out of
:05:30. > :05:35.control way before the starter was ready. That shows you she's going
:05:35. > :05:45.to have to really keep hold of this horse. The first comes very early
:05:45. > :05:47.
:05:47. > :05:57.up in the race. They're asking them all to come back. I can see Sizing
:05:57. > :05:57.
:05:58. > :06:02.America. They're all shouting at each other to try and get straight!
:06:02. > :06:08.That's it, a better line this time. The starter has got them there. He
:06:08. > :06:16.holds them. Emergency Cover, who caused that problem is now with his
:06:16. > :06:20.back to the tape. Now he turns around. A couple of them - that's
:06:20. > :06:25.it, I think they're just about ready.
:06:25. > :06:33.The starter is holding them. Harps Counsel is now the one who is
:06:33. > :06:37.giving a problem near the inside. The others stand well. Emergency
:06:37. > :06:45.Cover standing well this time. Harps Counsel is straightened up.
:06:45. > :06:49.That's it, I reckon. They're off and running in the John Smith's Fox
:06:49. > :06:54.Hunters and Gwanako away well. Offshore Account there as well. Out
:06:54. > :06:59.wide as they head over the first. All over safely. Sheriff Hutton
:06:59. > :07:05.towards the rear. On settling down and Cloudy Lane has through on the
:07:05. > :07:09.inside now. Herons Well. A mistake out wide by Launde. But he landed
:07:09. > :07:15.safely and all over the second. Up now towards The Chair. Cloudy Lane
:07:15. > :07:17.the leader from Launde and behind them is My Way De Solzen from The
:07:17. > :07:22.Polomoche. Herons Well behind them, followed by Harps Counsel. They
:07:22. > :07:26.head over The Chair. Further back is Silver Adonis. They're all over
:07:26. > :07:31.that safely. Kildonnan jumped last. Up to the water now. Launde the
:07:31. > :07:37.leader, from in second Cloudy Lane. My Way De Solzen, followed by
:07:37. > :07:40.Launde up there as well. Gwanako handy. They're followed next by
:07:40. > :07:46.Presentandcorrect and further back is Herons Well. They swing past the
:07:46. > :07:50.judge. Followed by Harps Counsel, from Unowatimeen. Silver Adonis
:07:50. > :07:54.further back. Roulez Cool in the centre. Followed by Sizing America.
:07:54. > :08:00.The Polomoche. Two lengths further back then is Island Life. Further
:08:00. > :08:07.back by Bow School, Fresh Air And Fun and further back is Emergency
:08:07. > :08:12.Cover. Keenan's Future giving them a start. William Butler out the
:08:12. > :08:16.back from Eleazar. They head now towards fence number five. We join
:08:16. > :08:20.Ian. Cloudy Lane is the first to rise there. They come over this
:08:20. > :08:25.fifth obstacle. Right at the back of the field Kildonnan unseated
:08:25. > :08:30.rider at that, the first one to go. Cloudy Lane from Presentandcorrect,
:08:30. > :08:34.My Way De Solzen, Gwanako. Unowatimeen behind those. King Of
:08:34. > :08:39.The Road a faller at that next plain fence. Here is the ditch. My
:08:39. > :08:42.Way De Solzen leads, to Cloudy Lane. Gwanako. Presentandcorrect, behind
:08:42. > :08:45.those The Polomoche and Silver Adonis. Unowatimeen and Roulez Cool.
:08:46. > :08:49.Herons Well behind those from Harps Counsel and then Blackstaff in the
:08:49. > :08:52.orange jacket, furtherest from us as they come to another plain
:08:52. > :08:55.obstacle. My Way De Solzen, just the leader. The Polomoche I think
:08:55. > :08:59.was a faller further back in the field. Boxer Georg is going in the
:08:59. > :09:04.rear of the field. Still going Launde. I think the saddle might
:09:04. > :09:07.have slipped there. He has problems here is Darren. Jumping the one
:09:07. > :09:10.before Becher's Brook. They touch down safely. Blackstaff is down.
:09:11. > :09:15.Offshore Account has gone as well. It's Roulez Cool who leads followed
:09:15. > :09:19.by My Way De Solzen. Gwanako. Then Presentandcorrect, Unowatimeen,
:09:19. > :09:22.Silver Adonis, Harps Counsel, chased by Cloudy Lane. Further back
:09:22. > :09:26.to Keenan's Future and Bow School. They jump Becher's Brook.
:09:26. > :09:31.Presentandcorrect is down. William Butler is out of the race. Sheriff
:09:31. > :09:37.Hutton is also gone. Towards the fence. Roulez Cool the leader, by
:09:37. > :09:42.about a half length. Gwanako to the outside. Harps Counsel is down
:09:42. > :09:46.there. Nowed run down towards the canal turn. Roulez Cool who has the
:09:46. > :09:50.lead up on the inside of Gwanako. Then Unowatimeen, followed by My
:09:50. > :09:55.Way De Solzen. Silver Adonis. Cloudy Lane, Keenan's Future,
:09:55. > :09:59.followed by Bow School. Island Life. Then comes Fresh Air And Fun and
:09:59. > :10:03.now the leaders straighten up for Valentine's Brook and Roulez Cool
:10:03. > :10:07.being followed to the outside by Gwanako. Unowatimeen, My Way De
:10:07. > :10:14.Solzen, further back to Silver Adonis. Five to jump, here is Ian.
:10:14. > :10:16.The orange sleeves, Roulez Cool. Gwanako has gone there. My Way De
:10:16. > :10:19.Solzen is now over in second position. These are followed by
:10:19. > :10:24.Silver Adonis and then Keenan's Future and Cloudy Lane. They come
:10:24. > :10:28.to four from the finish. Roulez Cool is over it OK. My Way De
:10:28. > :10:32.Solzen second from Silver Adonis and Cloudy Lane. Keenan's Future
:10:32. > :10:37.and Island Life has unseated the rider. Fresh Air And Fun just in
:10:37. > :10:41.behind the leading group of runners. Teddy's Reflection. The third last.
:10:41. > :10:45.Cloudy Lane is moving into second. Silver Adonis the grey, from the
:10:45. > :10:48.dark jacket of My Way De Solzen. Keenan's Future behind those. Then
:10:48. > :10:51.Fresh Air And Fun and behind that is Bow School. They're followed by
:10:51. > :10:55.Herons Well and further back to Sizing America. Teddy's Reflection
:10:55. > :11:00.is still going. Boxer Georg is also still there. A few other stragglers.
:11:00. > :11:06.But for the finish here is Jim. Roulez Cool has the lead for Sam.
:11:06. > :11:09.Clear here of Cloudy Lane. They're followed by Silver Adonis. A gap to
:11:09. > :11:17.My Way De Solzen. Then Keenan's Future. They run up now with two
:11:17. > :11:20.fences left to jump in the John Smith's Fox Hunters Chase. Roulez
:11:20. > :11:24.Cool, Sam has a wonderful record over these fences, he leads by four
:11:24. > :11:27.lengths. They come to the second last. In second is Cloudy Lane.
:11:27. > :11:31.They come towards it now. They sail over it. Silver Adonis is running
:11:31. > :11:36.on very well. They're followed next in the field by Keenan's Future.
:11:36. > :11:40.Further back then Fresh Air And Fun. They've one left to jump. They come
:11:40. > :11:44.towards the last. Roulez Cool grabbed now by Cloudy Lane. They're
:11:44. > :11:48.clear of Keenan's Future. A long gap Fresh Air And Fun who is
:11:48. > :11:52.running on, followed by Silver Adonis. They race up towards The
:11:52. > :11:56.Elbow. Cloudy Lane on the outside is the leader. Cloudy Lane by a
:11:56. > :11:59.length. Roulez Cool is not done with. Followed then by Keenan's
:11:59. > :12:04.Future behind them. They're on the run-in for home. Cloudy Lane trying
:12:04. > :12:07.to hold on in the Fox Hunters. Cloudy Lane for Richard Harding.
:12:07. > :12:12.Three lengths in front. Roulez Cool is raising another effort. They
:12:12. > :12:16.race up towards the line Cloudy Lane in the colours of Trevor
:12:16. > :12:20.Hemmings comes home a clear winner of the Fox Hunters, by three
:12:20. > :12:25.lengths. Roulez Cool in second. Third then on the outside is Herons
:12:25. > :12:32.Well. Followed by Keenan's Future. They were followed by Sizing
:12:32. > :12:39.America who ran on well. Followed then by Fresh Air And Fun. Further
:12:39. > :12:43.back then is Boxer Georg, finished off well. So too did Teddy's
:12:43. > :12:49.Reflection and My Way De Solzen. Then further back is Eleazar,
:12:49. > :12:55.followed by Bow School. But as they cross the line the winner of the
:12:55. > :12:59.John Smith's Fox Hunters' Chase of 2012 is number four, Cloudy Lane,
:12:59. > :13:03.ridden by Mr Richard Harding, trained by Donald McCain and in the
:13:03. > :13:13.colours of Trevor Hemmings. Second is number 19, Roulez Cool, ridden
:13:13. > :13:17.
:13:17. > :13:24.by Sam Waley Cohen: Third Herons Well. Fourth Keenan's Future. Early
:13:24. > :13:30.estimates are that 13 horses have finished the course here in the Fox
:13:30. > :13:36.Hunters' Chase. 13, we believe have completed the course. Half the
:13:36. > :13:42.field have got home. Rishi is with the winning team after Cloudy Lane
:13:42. > :13:45.has won. Richard, you know this horse very
:13:45. > :13:50.well, fourth time you have ridden this season, but you must be amazed
:13:50. > :14:00.by how well he went around today? Yeah, he's been around here before.
:14:00. > :14:01.
:14:01. > :14:04.A brilliant spin. Jumped, travelled well. Loved it. Tackically you must
:14:04. > :14:08.be delighted by the way things went in the race because you didn't have
:14:08. > :14:15.to do too much early on, you were able to creep in and Roulez Cool
:14:15. > :14:21.set a good gallop early on. Yeah, got a great break. Able to make up
:14:21. > :14:29.the first four. Take it up maybe turn in two out, went to plan.
:14:29. > :14:32.does a victory like this in front of an awesome crowd mean? I wanted
:14:32. > :14:36.to win this race, it's great to win it. Well done, you have done it.
:14:36. > :14:41.Thank you. A terrific win there for Cloudy
:14:41. > :14:44.Lane. He was sent off the 4-1 joint favourite and the faith in him
:14:45. > :14:50.based on his two runs in the Grand National and the fact that he was
:14:50. > :14:54.sent off favourite for the Grand National in 2008, he finished six
:14:54. > :14:59.6th that time. Look at his ears, saying I have been here before, I
:14:59. > :15:04.know what this is about. He was clever over those fences, there was
:15:04. > :15:09.a point he seemed to drop out and came back into it. As Richard was
:15:09. > :15:14.saying, back from Valentine's and filled the tanks up. As it probably
:15:14. > :15:20.turned out he hit the front soon and he idled up the run-in and only
:15:20. > :15:23.doing enough on him. He has given him a lovely ride. A great run from
:15:23. > :15:28.Roulez Cool, Sam finished second in the Grand National last year and
:15:28. > :15:33.has won this race twice, finishing second this time on Roulez Cool.
:15:33. > :15:36.The celebrations for Richard Harding and Donald McCain, we
:15:36. > :15:39.talked to him before the race, he always had such affection for this
:15:39. > :15:44.horse, Cloudy Lane was his first really good horse when he took over
:15:44. > :15:54.from his father, Ginger and Ginger McCain's statue will look down on
:15:54. > :15:59.
:15:59. > :16:05.his son's horse coming back into horses are alright. We haven't got
:16:05. > :16:11.confirmation on all of the jockeys yet, but the horses are OK.
:16:11. > :16:18.Cloudy Lane knows his way around here, that's for sure. He has run
:16:18. > :16:25.in three Grand Nationals. In 2008 he was joint favourite. The next
:16:25. > :16:34.year he unseated his rider. A 50-1 chance. In 2010 he finished 8th
:16:35. > :16:38.behind Don't Push It. Today restricted to amateurs Mr Richard
:16:38. > :16:48.Harding took the ride and capitalised on the opportunity.
:16:48. > :17:01.
:17:01. > :17:06.Trevor Hemmings. He is represented by Ballabriggs,
:17:06. > :17:14.who is attempting back to back wins in the Grand National on Saturday.
:17:14. > :17:18.It will be interesting to see how he gets on.
:17:18. > :17:26.A lot stiffer task at the handicap this year.
:17:26. > :17:36.The winner is trained by Donald McCain, the son of the legendry
:17:36. > :17:37.
:17:37. > :17:40.Ginger McCain. There he is looking down on us over the winners'
:17:40. > :17:46.enclosure, from above. And delighted I'm sure with this
:17:46. > :17:53.outcome. A great tradition, the McCain family, their connection
:17:53. > :18:00.with Liverpool and Aintree. So close. From the days of Red Rum to
:18:00. > :18:09.the days of Ballabriggs. This horse, Cloudy Lane, is a big part of that.
:18:09. > :18:19.He did start joint favourite. After a 15-1 winner the previous race
:18:19. > :18:37.
:18:37. > :18:42.free drinks tonight? The Tower. We said there would be money for
:18:42. > :18:47.Cloudy Lane. 6-1 into 4-1. The gamble landed. The McCain factor
:18:47. > :18:53.once again at Liverpool. The way Cloudy Lane finished is
:18:53. > :19:03.even more remarkable. If you look at his hind shoe, he has twisted it
:19:03. > :19:07.and it is rather unkufpblt they'll get the farrier to -- it is rather
:19:07. > :19:14.uncomfortable. They'll get the farrier to remover it soon.
:19:14. > :19:20.This is your first Fox Hunters'' victory. It's lovely isn't it. This
:19:20. > :19:26.is the one that we bred ourselves. The family are over there. Cloudy
:19:26. > :19:31.Lane was with them at the time and are now in partial ownership. We
:19:31. > :19:35.not only had the mare but the son at the same time. Watch out,
:19:35. > :19:44.because he keeps kick out because of his shoe. I think it will have
:19:44. > :19:48.to be pulled off. It is bothering him a bit. Donald; his back shoe.
:19:48. > :19:55.Yes, it's marvellous. A great feeling. Especially going over the
:19:55. > :20:01.big fences. He's been over them before in the Grand National. As
:20:01. > :20:06.small as he is, he jumped them fences superbly. You get such a
:20:06. > :20:10.thrill out of having winners don't you? I love it. This is the place
:20:10. > :20:14.for you and the place that your dream was the win the Grand
:20:14. > :20:19.National. You managed that with Hedgehunter and with Ballabriggs.
:20:19. > :20:27.Somebody's got to take over from ginger. I'm helping out with the
:20:27. > :20:37.young son. If he needs telling off he rings me now. And he is some
:20:37. > :20:38.
:20:38. > :20:41.trainer. Super. What a lovely man. I know Beryl is here as well. Thank
:20:41. > :20:48.you Trevor. Donald McCain is surrounded by journalists, all
:20:48. > :20:53.getting a line from him. A reaction. He's the nicest man in the world.
:20:53. > :20:59.There is not many who would say, "Do you want me?" Fabulous. It's
:20:59. > :21:08.wonderful. When you have a first horse for Trevor Hemmings, the big
:21:08. > :21:13.race he won us, it's been endless. Every race he wants to win he's won.
:21:13. > :21:18.We missed last season. He had a problem. We didn't know what to do.
:21:18. > :21:23.He's 12 years old, what do you do? He loves his job. He's like a four-
:21:23. > :21:28.year-old at home. We weren't going to run him. The head girl has made
:21:28. > :21:33.a fantastic job. His blood was wrong and everything. She sorted
:21:33. > :21:39.him out. How good is it to come into the winner's enclosure with a
:21:39. > :21:46.statue of your father looking down on it? An tree is special to us as
:21:46. > :21:50.a family anyway. Mr Hemmings from the first season supported me to.
:21:50. > :21:58.Repay people like him, it is magic. To to see him watching is special.
:21:58. > :22:06.It is indeed. Well done. Thank you Clare. Two men just cooling down in
:22:06. > :22:10.the jockeys' room after the Fox Hunters', Sam Waley-Cohen. Sam,
:22:10. > :22:15.there must have been a moment jumping out of the back straight
:22:15. > :22:20.you thought you had the rest of the field in trouble? Yes, sitting
:22:20. > :22:25.outside of Gwanako, he was starting to get into a good rhythm. He was
:22:25. > :22:29.forcing me to be more positive at the fences than I wanted to be.
:22:29. > :22:32.He's won over further, so I thought he's probably got the stamina for
:22:33. > :22:37.this. He's only had a couple of run this is season and he ran out of
:22:37. > :22:41.petrol. You are building up good record around the fences. If you
:22:41. > :22:45.have a good horse it is a lot of fun. But if you have the wrong
:22:45. > :22:50.horse it is a horror show. Josh, for a moment I thought you might
:22:50. > :22:55.not get placed, but your horse really picked up in the closing
:22:55. > :22:58.stages. He did. He wasn't jumping himself there. Got out of pace in
:22:58. > :23:08.the start, fell behind in a few place. But then coming into the
:23:08. > :23:13.home straight he started passing a hue horses and started liking it --
:23:13. > :23:22.passing a few horses and started liking it. Can you tell us what the
:23:22. > :23:27.ground was like on the National course today? It is fair. Safe.
:23:27. > :23:33.Josh, if I stays dry, what's going to happen on Saturday? Fit goes
:23:33. > :23:37.well I don't see a lot of horses making it around. Dry will make it
:23:37. > :23:42.an interesting contest now. Hopefully it goes alright now.
:23:42. > :23:46.Thank you very much for talking to us. Thank you. Cloudy Lane, the
:23:46. > :23:52.emergency was to get that hind shoe off him. It was twisted. You can
:23:52. > :23:57.see the nails start to stick in in place where is they shouldn't. The
:23:57. > :24:01.horse was trying to kick it off. The farrier has pulled that shoe
:24:01. > :24:05.off. The presentation has been made in the John Smith's Fox Hunters'
:24:05. > :24:13.Chase. Karen Crowley of John Smith's making the presentation.
:24:13. > :24:22.Also up there, Philip Hemmings and Mick, the racing manager. Robert
:24:22. > :24:26.Waley-Cohen who ran and trained the second horse. The look that says it
:24:26. > :24:32.all. A win that means more than they can ever put into words. Let's
:24:32. > :24:42.go through exactly what happened in the Fox Hunters' with Ian Bartlett
:24:42. > :24:44.
:24:44. > :24:48.and Mick Fitzgerald. We knew it was going to be a fast
:24:49. > :24:58.gallop to the first, because this is the second attempt at the start.
:24:59. > :24:59.
:24:59. > :25:06.Sheriff Hutton, he a visor on the first time. Herons Well jumped off
:25:06. > :25:12.handy with Cloudy Lane on the inside. And Herons Well. We see in
:25:12. > :25:22.the centre, dark blue and yellow, that's King Fontaine. He was down
:25:22. > :25:29.on his nose and his hind quarters went there. Launde, pitched up his
:25:29. > :25:34.neck. In the red and white on the outside. He has almost gone out
:25:34. > :25:39.over the top. And Kildonnan is at the back. Here is the biggest fence
:25:39. > :25:44.on the course, the Chair. Launde in front and Cloudy Lane in second
:25:44. > :25:51.place. This is the biggest fence. We'll have several looks at this.
:25:51. > :25:56.Cloudy Lane on the far side. Look at the horse in orange. Blackstaff.
:25:56. > :26:01.The jockey did well to stay on. will also see a mistake from
:26:01. > :26:08.Sheriff Hutton. He is just coming now, in mid air, the red sleeves at
:26:08. > :26:17.the back. Nods a bit on landing. This view you get, should you be
:26:17. > :26:23.able to, sit down in the ditch. Gwanako. There's Gina Andrews.
:26:23. > :26:29.Watch Robert Hodges. The horse ran a blinder. You will see in a
:26:29. > :26:36.second... This is the water jump. Fence number four. We have Launde,
:26:36. > :26:43.who is a leader. My Way De Solzen and Cloudy Lane.
:26:43. > :26:48.You can see Gwanako in the red and white and black, in the Andy Stuart
:26:48. > :26:53.colours. James Cowley had a great spin. Look at Cloudy Lane, cut
:26:53. > :26:57.every corner. Give an great ride. On the far side of the course, this
:26:57. > :27:03.is the fifth. The dark blue of My Way De Solzen. Just come through to
:27:03. > :27:10.be the leader. There's seven or eight of them snapping at his heels.
:27:10. > :27:13.He jumps a bit slow. He does. They are almost in a perfect line here.
:27:13. > :27:18.They've quite sensible. It's good to see these amateurs riding with
:27:18. > :27:23.plenty of brains. A great leap from Gwanako. He almost took the lead
:27:23. > :27:28.and there at the back is our first out of the race, which is Kildonnan.
:27:28. > :27:32.He shifts off violently right. His pilot had no chance No chance. When
:27:32. > :27:37.they duck out from underneath like that it is like falling out of the
:27:37. > :27:44.car with the doors open. Cloudy Lane, the western. The
:27:44. > :27:48.runner up, number 19, Roulez Cool. We'll see him in the brown and
:27:48. > :27:53.orange jacket. These are the first and second. My Way De Solzen is
:27:53. > :27:58.just in the front at the moment. Gwanako and My Way De Solzen. They
:27:58. > :28:03.are jumping brilliant here. The horse in blue in front. A dream
:28:03. > :28:08.ride on this horse. You can see in the brown colours, three off the
:28:08. > :28:13.rail, this horse was travelling very well. Samantha Drake having a
:28:13. > :28:19.dream ride on this horse. This is the open ditch. We see My Way De
:28:19. > :28:25.Solzen. Whorl Thomas is pitched up on the neck. Did well to maintain
:28:25. > :28:32.the partnership. At the back of the. He is struggling to keep this
:28:32. > :28:37.partnership in fence. The Polomoche was the faller at fence number 8.
:28:37. > :28:44.No chance. They are making their way to the
:28:44. > :28:48.bottom end of the course. Another plain one, fence 9. On theite of
:28:48. > :28:58.picture, four horses from the right, against the rails. Not getting on
:28:58. > :28:58.
:28:58. > :29:02.with it just yet. We'll see well back in the field William Butler
:29:02. > :29:08.comes down. Nick Sutton had no chance there. Offshore Account
:29:08. > :29:18.ducked to avoid the stricken rider. Becher's Brook. Presentandcorrect
:29:18. > :29:22.
:29:22. > :29:28.goes. On his nose was... Foinavon coming up. Roulez Cool shortens
:29:28. > :29:35.into that. Even though it is the smallest fence, horses pitch a bit.
:29:35. > :29:41.Harps Counsel goes here. He hits the top. Shifts to his right and
:29:41. > :29:47.under the rider is nothing but fresh air. Cutting the corner. A
:29:47. > :29:53.great jump again from Gwanako. We've stween or three leaps from
:29:53. > :30:00.him where he's made good ground. must be getting very excite. Cloudy
:30:00. > :30:08.Lane down the inside. Ritchie hardy cut the corner. This is the second
:30:08. > :30:12.look of the canal. Cloudy Lane, you wouldn't have picked him out at the
:30:12. > :30:19.winner there. Here we come to Valentine's. These horses have
:30:19. > :30:23.skipped over this. Cloudy Lane back in sixth. The tail enders are
:30:23. > :30:33.getting through. You see a hairy leap from Emergency Cover. Quite
:30:33. > :30:38.
:30:38. > :30:42.close to us in the yellow colours here. Look at both of them go there.
:30:42. > :30:51.Just got too low. Watch this horse here in front on the left. Just
:30:51. > :30:54.hits the fence too low down. Poor old Samantha, she was having a
:30:54. > :30:57.great ride on Unowatimeen. Roulez Cool out in front at this open
:30:57. > :31:01.ditch. My Way De Solzen four or five lengths behind in fourth place,
:31:01. > :31:04.behind the grey, which is Silver Adonis, Cloudy Lane. And then
:31:04. > :31:13.Keenan's Future, the pale blue towards the left getting over it
:31:13. > :31:18.now. You can see one there skipping out the side door. Island Life is
:31:18. > :31:23.the fall at that open ditch. Way back Herons Well, this is a horse
:31:23. > :31:26.to pay close attention to because he makes a lot of ground up.
:31:26. > :31:34.can hardly see him here. You can see My Way De Solzen just being
:31:34. > :31:37.very careful over these obstacles. A late finisher. A slow jump from
:31:37. > :31:40.Teddy's Reflection further back. We are into the home strait. Roulez
:31:40. > :31:44.Cool in front and now only two lengths behind is Cloudy Lane and
:31:44. > :31:48.after that fence the second last, he is only a length behind. Sam
:31:48. > :31:52.must be able to tell he is coming now. You can feel them when you
:31:52. > :32:02.ride. Your horse senses there's another horse there and Richard
:32:02. > :32:04.Harding knows this horse stays. the last he has just taken the lead,
:32:04. > :32:12.Cloudy Lane. Roulez Cool behind in second. Keenan's Future the light
:32:12. > :32:18.blue in third. Look to the right of the fence, maroon and white colours.
:32:18. > :32:21.He's made a lot of ground up. has. He's finished to real good
:32:21. > :32:25.effect. Richard Harding can almost smell the victory. He is desperate
:32:26. > :32:30.for that line to come to him. Sam on the other hand, Roulez Cool, he
:32:30. > :32:36.has had another brilliant ride over the National fences and Josh will
:32:36. > :32:40.be delighted with the ride he has had. He's certainly given it his
:32:40. > :32:50.everything. I am impressed on that ride. Some of them are getting
:32:50. > :32:54.getting tired. He has has - Trevor Hemmings love this is racecourse
:32:54. > :32:58.and these fences, two Grand Nationals already and now Cloudy
:32:58. > :33:02.Lane has given him this winner of this John Smith's Fox Hunters'
:33:02. > :33:12.Chase and another one, of course, from the Donald McCain stables. Our
:33:12. > :33:21.
:33:21. > :33:26.4-1. A tremendous success for Trevor
:33:26. > :33:34.Hemmings who has given so much to this sport of horseracing. He is
:33:34. > :33:40.going to give David a kiss! He says don't you care! Richard Harding
:33:40. > :33:47.there heading back to the famous jockeys' changing room here. We are
:33:47. > :33:51.fast approaching the start time of our final live race. The horses are
:33:51. > :33:57.down at the start. Nine of the 13 met last time at the Cheltenham
:33:57. > :34:01.Festival in the grand annual chase. Here is Jim to tell us about them.
:34:01. > :34:11.They're at the post. Let's check them quickly. Tanks For That, Barry
:34:11. > :34:11.
:34:11. > :34:57.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 66 seconds
:34:57. > :35:00.Sol is the favourite. Gary? Cassidy into six and a half.
:35:00. > :35:03.Interesting head-to-head this race with the trainers Paul Nicholls and
:35:03. > :35:09.Nicky Henderson, could be crucial in the race to be champion trainer
:35:09. > :35:13.because it's worth 34,000 to the winner. This horse Edgardo Sol,
:35:13. > :35:19.this is just his third run over fences in this country because he
:35:19. > :35:24.has been running over hurdles, Richard. Went to Cheltenham and ran
:35:24. > :35:28.well in the County Hurdle, that was a hot race as well, over 17
:35:28. > :35:34.furlongs and this is a furlong less today. But fences a huge difference.
:35:34. > :35:39.Here is where the money is, Kid Cassidy. McCoy gives nothing away.
:35:39. > :35:42.He is so serious. He was sent off favourite last time but it was too
:35:42. > :35:47.keen in the race and beaten from a long way out to be honest and maybe
:35:47. > :35:51.it will suit him better and they'll need to go fast so he can relax.
:35:51. > :35:56.doesn't jump that well, so if they go fast it might force him into
:35:56. > :36:06.mistakes. If anyone's going to upset the Nichols-Henderson party,
:36:06. > :36:11.
:36:11. > :36:17.it will be Alan King. He runs Kumbeshwar. The blinkers are on.
:36:17. > :36:21.Jockeys getting horsed revved up. It will be fast. Tanks For That
:36:21. > :36:24.likes to make it. Kid Cassidy is always up there. You can see from
:36:24. > :36:28.the tightness of that group none of them want to get a lead. They'll be
:36:28. > :36:33.tightly packed. Let's head over to Jim McGrath.
:36:33. > :36:38.They're coming out now for this Red Rum Handicap Chase, celebrating the
:36:38. > :36:44.greatest hero of them all. They're off. In the centre the first away
:36:44. > :36:47.is Silk Drum. Out wide Echo Bob and behind them Tanks For That.
:36:47. > :36:55.Astracad in the centre and Kid Cassidy, a mistake at the first, a
:36:55. > :36:59.bad one, too. He is last. On settling down, it's Silk Drum on
:36:59. > :37:04.the inside the leader from Echo Bob. Tanks For That over on the far side.
:37:04. > :37:10.Astracad in the centre. Followed by Kumbeshwar and further back is Tara
:37:10. > :37:13.Royal and the leader got in too close at that. Silk Drum paid the
:37:13. > :37:16.penalty, and dropped back. Echo Bob is the leader up the home strait
:37:16. > :37:22.towards number three, the first of the ditches. Echo Bob the leader
:37:22. > :37:27.over it. They all got over it in good style. Second, Silk Drum,
:37:27. > :37:35.third Kumbeshwar, followed by Tanks For That. They head up now towards
:37:35. > :37:44.fence number 4. Further back Tara Royal, Astracad and Edgardo Sol.
:37:44. > :37:47.They sail over the next. Further back Free World on the inside of
:37:47. > :37:52.Oiseau de Nuit. Song Sung Blue. A circuit to go. Kid Cassidy second
:37:52. > :38:02.last and De Boitron last as they go out now. Under a happen of the
:38:02. > :38:05.track to go on this course. Out in front it's Echo Bob. In second the
:38:05. > :38:14.grey Silk Drum, two away is Kumbeshwar, a length and a half on
:38:14. > :38:19.the inside Tanks For That, from Astracad, followed by Edgardo Sol
:38:19. > :38:25.and Tara Royal. They come to the 5th. Further back on the inside
:38:25. > :38:30.Free World, who got into that, he hit it hard and lost ground.
:38:30. > :38:35.Followed by De Boitron. Still last is Kid Cassidy. The best part of 15
:38:35. > :38:39.lengths off the leader. The leader goes to the 6th, Echo Bob. Lands
:38:39. > :38:43.over it clear by three lengths, to in second Silk Drum. Tanks For That
:38:43. > :38:48.coming up in the centre. They come to the second open ditch. Then
:38:48. > :38:53.Kumbeshwar is out very wide. Edgardo Sol going well. Followed
:38:53. > :38:59.further back in the field by Takeroc, who is just preceded there
:38:59. > :39:04.as they head towards the next, the 8th. This one we see Echo Bob who
:39:04. > :39:08.led over it. Echo Bob by two to three lengths, from in second. They
:39:08. > :39:12.go to the far corner Kumbeshwar, followed then by Silk Drum. Tanks
:39:12. > :39:18.For That on the inside of Edgardo Sol, now starting to make some
:39:18. > :39:21.ground around the outside. Tara Royal behind them. Takeroc the
:39:21. > :39:27.inside. Astracad there as well. Towards four out. Echo Bob led over
:39:27. > :39:35.it, from Kumbeshwar and Edgardo Sol, who is going particularly well.
:39:35. > :39:38.Behind them at this stage Tanks For That, then Astracad. Oiseau de Nuit
:39:38. > :39:42.looming up. Followed by Tara Royal, a gap to Silk Drum who has dropped
:39:42. > :39:47.back. Echo Bob the leader. They come towards three out. Edgardo Sol
:39:47. > :39:51.is closing. Spring-heeled at that as well. Followed by Astracad
:39:51. > :39:56.running on fairly well. Followed then by Kumbeshwar. Tara Royal.
:39:56. > :40:02.They come to the last ditch. Two out. Echo Bob the far side. Grabbed
:40:02. > :40:05.now by Edgardo Sol. Takes a narrow lead. Six lengths in advance now of
:40:05. > :40:10.Astracad followed by Kumbeshwar. Edgardo Sol has skipped four, five
:40:10. > :40:14.lengths in front with one left to jump. It's Edgardo Sol careering
:40:14. > :40:21.away. They head towards the lucky last now. It's Edgardo Sol towards
:40:21. > :40:24.it, went through spring-heeled and bounding clear. Edgardo Sol and
:40:24. > :40:29.Ruby Walsh coming home a clear winner and and valuable winner for
:40:29. > :40:34.Paul nick opls in the race -- Paul Nicholls in the race for the
:40:34. > :40:39.trainers' title. Third Echo Bob, followed by Astracad, Kid Cassidy
:40:39. > :40:49.never in it. Followed by Oiseau de Nuit, then Takeroc, back towards
:40:49. > :41:02.
:41:02. > :41:12.and has won for the syndicate and Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh.
:41:12. > :41:13.
:41:13. > :41:17.Second, number 6, Astracad, third Echo Bob, and fourth number 3,
:41:17. > :41:21.Kumbeshwar. Edgardo Sol in the run the one you wanted to be on,
:41:21. > :41:26.especially after Kid Cassidy made that bad blunder at the first. He
:41:26. > :41:31.lost so much ground and was never really travelling. Edgardo Sol,
:41:31. > :41:36.Ruby Walsh day here at Aintree. The double for Paul Nicholls, Big
:41:36. > :41:40.Buck's and Edgardo Sol, adds about 100,000 to his prize money, about
:41:40. > :41:50.90,000 actually. Stretches his lead ahead of Nicky Henderson
:41:50. > :41:50.
:41:50. > :41:58.tomorrow in the big race, Nicky Henderson has Finian's Rainbow in
:41:58. > :42:02.it. Andrew Lynch's horse makes a mistake there. The second last is a
:42:02. > :42:06.ditch there. He clattered into it. Edgardo Sol, only a little horse,
:42:06. > :42:09.but he fairly skips over the obstacles and you could see Ruby
:42:09. > :42:13.decisive move here. He made his mind up and said come on, he
:42:13. > :42:15.squeezed him all the way down to this last fence and made it running.
:42:16. > :42:19.Lovely shot of him winging that last fence. As a jockey, that's
:42:19. > :42:22.what you want. You are desperate for that last fence to come in a
:42:22. > :42:26.nice stride so you can clear it and hot foot it up the running. This
:42:26. > :42:32.was the reaction of Paul as he was watching on the big screen here in
:42:32. > :42:35.the paddock. Really roaring him home. He gets - he is very - you
:42:35. > :42:39.know, emotional Paul and very highly strung at moments like this.
:42:39. > :42:42.He loves it and celebrates. Go on my son, he is saying! Let's hear
:42:42. > :42:46.from him now. Congratulations, the last time this
:42:46. > :42:49.horse ran over fences was here. Controversially Ruby won the race
:42:49. > :42:58.and got a ban. Was it always the plan to leave him over hurdles
:42:58. > :43:04.until this meeting? I mean, amazingly got beat over fences in
:43:04. > :43:08.Newton abbot. We went back over hurdles. He was unlucky in the
:43:08. > :43:12.County. I thought the novices were a bit hot and one of the hurdle
:43:12. > :43:16.races he was going to have 11, 12, I thought this was the right race.
:43:16. > :43:23.I didn't have worry about switching back. He is a real improver. He is
:43:23. > :43:26.going to go back for the Scottish champion champion hurdle. The plan
:43:27. > :43:31.was to run here and there next Saturday. The fact he has done well
:43:31. > :43:37.over both hurdles and offences means there's many options open to
:43:37. > :43:42.you. It's difficult to thick ahead, the way way -- think ahead. Next
:43:42. > :43:46.season you must be excited about? It's astounded how well he done,
:43:46. > :43:52.that's not going to do his handicap good over fences, next year will be
:43:53. > :43:56.a lot harder. You think he's gone from 117, probably 150 plus now, we
:43:56. > :43:59.will have to go down a different route. He is owned by a syndicate
:43:59. > :44:05.of people and they've had amazing fun with him. He has been brilliant.
:44:06. > :44:12.You would have to say a great buy. He has took them to great places,
:44:12. > :44:16.Cheltenham and here and hopefully Ayr. Congratulations. Thank you.
:44:16. > :44:22.Ruby Walsh coming into the winners' enclosure. And he will be hoping to
:44:22. > :44:28.be here on Saturday, of course. He has had a great day. Big Buck's
:44:28. > :44:35.winning the first and now Edgardo Sol. The distances, 14 lengths and
:44:35. > :44:40.seven. Now here are the horses in the washdown area. -- this has
:44:40. > :44:49.worked particularly well today. One of them getting a nice refreshing
:44:49. > :44:53.shower after his run here today. It's not that hot at all, but a
:44:53. > :44:56.hosedown works wonders. Here is the winner who can probably look
:44:56. > :45:03.forward to something similar in the next half hour or so.
:45:03. > :45:06.Coming back in there. A valuable winner for Paul Nicholls, whose
:45:06. > :45:10.fightback continues. He lost the lead to Nicky Henderson in the
:45:10. > :45:20.trainers battle, but has regained it and has come back with a
:45:20. > :45:30.
:45:30. > :45:39.vengeance today. He is now bounded Chase.
:45:39. > :45:48.Edgardo Sol, it was a rout. It was easy. Four favourites to be
:45:48. > :45:53.-- on the first day. Paul Nichol has had a winner at
:45:53. > :45:57.Newton Abbot today, so his prize money total is ratcheting up.
:45:58. > :46:07.That's how the trainers Championship is decided. Paul
:46:08. > :46:10.
:46:10. > :46:19.Nicholls now on 2,382,118 and Nicky Henderson on 2,299,129. If
:46:19. > :46:26.Nicky were to win the Grand National on Shakalakaboomboom... A
:46:26. > :46:36.couple of injuries in the Fox Hunters'. Greenall has a suspected
:46:36. > :46:36.
:46:36. > :46:39.fractured ankle. All the horses are A terrific first day here of the
:46:39. > :46:44.John Smith's Grand National festival. Highlighted by the win of
:46:44. > :46:51.Big Buck's in our first race. This extraordinary horse surpassing the
:46:51. > :46:54.record set in the 1950 s by Sir Ken, and standing out on his own with 17
:46:54. > :47:00.consecutive wins. It is an unbeaten record that stretches back to 2008
:47:00. > :47:05.for this horse. He was ridden by Ruby Walsh, who has just ridden his
:47:05. > :47:09.second winner of the day on Edgardo Sol. The last time Ruby Walsh was
:47:09. > :47:14.successful over fences here, it wasn't the best circumstances but
:47:14. > :47:17.it is one you can enjoy today. last day was dead and buried. The
:47:17. > :47:22.rules are much better than they were now than then. That's in the
:47:22. > :47:27.past. He's an improved horse. His run in Cheltenham was a great run.
:47:27. > :47:33.Every run has been a better run for him. He's improving all the time.
:47:33. > :47:38.Jumped super today and will go further, if the truth is told. He
:47:38. > :47:43.travelled extremely well. He is a novice. He was brilliant. Well done.
:47:43. > :47:48.Cheers. That completes our racing coverage
:47:48. > :47:54.here from Aintree on day one of this three-day festival. We're back
:47:54. > :48:04.tomorrow at 1.45 pm. Highlights include Fenians rainbow and the
:48:04. > :48:16.
:48:16. > :48:19.to the centre of Liverpool, not to go out on the town but to do a
:48:19. > :48:25.preview programme on Five Live which starts at 8 o'clock. We'll
:48:25. > :48:32.bring you latest news on the Grand National. Rich Dunwoody, a great
:48:32. > :48:35.first day. It was great. Cloudy Lane, Big Buck's. Something for
:48:35. > :48:40.everyone. Has it made you think anything with the Grand National in
:48:41. > :48:49.mind? I can't help but think Ginger is overlooking the parade. Is he
:48:49. > :48:54.trying to tell us something with Ballabriggs? So many good stories
:48:54. > :48:58.on Saturday. We'll be examining some of those on the road tonight
:48:58. > :49:04.and as we continue our coverage tomorrow and Saturday. I hope
:49:04. > :49:09.you've enjoyed the racing from Aintree. Congratulations to Paul
:49:09. > :49:17.Nicholls and to Donald McCain with their success in the Fox Hunters'.
:49:17. > :49:21.We'll see you tomorrow afternoon. Bye-bye.
:49:21. > :49:30.This is Liverpool day and thousands of people have been pouring in. Big
:49:30. > :49:35.Buck's, 500,000 at 1-5. Is this a cash bet? And they are off and
:49:35. > :49:45.running. Big Buck's now powers into the lead. 17 consecutive victories
:49:45. > :49:46.
:49:46. > :49:54.over hurdles. What a horse he is. They touchdown together. Grumeti
