:01:21. > :01:26.the challenge there is to turn sharp left as you jump it. The

:01:26. > :01:29.runners angle out to take the corner on the corner. Look at the

:01:29. > :01:33.course, it looks in perfect condition. The biggest fence is

:01:33. > :01:37.still The Chair. It looks even bigger because it's narrower and

:01:37. > :01:42.after that they stream past the grandstand which will be packed

:01:42. > :01:45.today. It's Liverpool Day and thousands have been pouring in from

:01:45. > :01:48.train stations, bus stations, from cars, all over the place to

:01:48. > :01:52.celebrate everything that is good about jump racing and also is good

:01:52. > :01:56.about this part of the world. And they have a real chance to

:01:56. > :01:59.celebrate a hero in our opening race, because Big Buck's is in the

:01:59. > :02:04.paddock here and people crowding around the outside of the paddock

:02:04. > :02:08.to get a close look at a horse who is completely unflappable. He is so

:02:08. > :02:13.cool and he has run up a consecutive run of 16 wins on the

:02:13. > :02:19.trot. He is going for his 17th today, that will be in our opening

:02:19. > :02:23.race. He is like Roger Federer, he is so cool, taking it all in,

:02:23. > :02:27.looking at people saying hello, are you here for me? Today they are. We

:02:27. > :02:36.have three days of fabulous racing, culminating in the most famous

:02:36. > :02:44.jumps race in the world. I cannot remember a better day for

:04:31. > :04:37.he is here for probably the 17th year in a row I should think. He is

:04:37. > :04:41.heading for his 17th championship and he will be riding Synchronised

:04:41. > :04:44.in the Grand National, bidding to become the first horse since Golden

:04:44. > :04:53.Miller to win the Gold Cup and Grand National. The festival was

:04:53. > :04:58.kicked off in great style by the three-times world champion gymnast

:04:58. > :05:02.Beth Tweddle. She took a break from her training to cut the ribbon with

:05:02. > :05:06.Ian Bartlet and the meeting starts in good style because over here is

:05:06. > :05:14.Big Buck's, I was taupbging -- talking about him earlier, saying

:05:14. > :05:18.he is like Roger Federer. I wonder if that's the secret to himself.

:05:18. > :05:22.His lazy style of racing, it makes everybody think they have a chance

:05:22. > :05:26.to beat him. He has beaten off every challenge foreare the last 16

:05:26. > :05:32.times. He is so beautiful. He is the perfect outline for a racehorse.

:05:32. > :05:35.He looks gleaming in his coat. He is trying to beat a record that he

:05:35. > :05:41.equalled at the Cheltenham when he won The World Hurdle for the fourth

:05:41. > :05:44.time, a record set in the 50s by Sir Ken. I think he deserves to be,

:05:49. > :05:54.best there is. Everything, every young horse that's tried to beat

:05:54. > :05:58.him they've failed. He's laughed at them. We saw him last year, he

:12:54. > :12:57.make it look easy. He doesn't. There is sa lot of guys at home who

:12:57. > :13:00.play in running betting and they've made a lot of money off this horse,

:13:00. > :13:03.at times he looks beaten but it's almost like he is playing with

:13:03. > :13:08.everybody, just keeping them interested. You know, what an

:20:46. > :20:51.it than I am. He will ride Big Buck's the handy way. He's not a

:20:51. > :21:00.slow horse. The easiest way is to keep it as simple as possible.

:22:51. > :22:55.half a furlong, jumping a total of 13 flights in this BGC Partners

:22:55. > :23:01.Liverpool Hurdle. Won for the last three years by Big Buck's.

:23:01. > :23:07.Big Buck's jumps it in third position. The leader is Across The

:23:07. > :23:12.Bay, by two lengths to Poungach in second, to Big Buck's in third.

:24:06. > :24:09.of the field is Tidal Bay. He is second last. A gap then to at the

:24:09. > :24:13.rear of the field Crack Away Jack. Heading towards flight number three

:24:13. > :24:18.and the leader on the inside Across The Bay, two lengths to Poungach.

:24:18. > :24:22.Two away to Big Buck's on the inside as he gets over that in good,

:24:22. > :24:27.fluent style. Travelling well on the inside for Ruby Walsh. A half

:24:27. > :24:30.length on the outer is Restless Harry. They continue their journey

:24:30. > :24:35.to the fourth. Smad Place tucked away on the inside. Further back

:24:35. > :24:39.Won In The Dark, out wider then is Tidal Bay, and two or three lengths

:24:42. > :24:49.favourite is exactly where you would want him to be. Travelling

:24:57. > :25:02.wants to be, sat third. It is where I would want to be in the race. So

:25:02. > :25:04.far they are all jumping well and everything is travelling well.

:25:05. > :25:09.they swing towards the entrance to the home straight on the first

:25:09. > :25:13.occasion, just under two miles to travel. Across The Bay the leader

:25:13. > :25:18.by a length, to on the outside Poungach. Half a length away tucked

:25:18. > :25:21.away is Big Buck's, just lobbing along behind these two pace-setters.

:25:21. > :25:25.Further back is Restless Harry on the outside. Then Smad Place as

:25:25. > :25:30.they come to the fifth. They are followed by Won In The Dark and

:25:30. > :25:37.Tidal Bay, and last is Crack Away Jack. Getting up towards flight

:25:37. > :25:41.number six. On the far side Across The Bay draws towards it. He jumps

:25:41. > :25:45.it clean in spectacular style. A half length in front of Poungach as

:25:45. > :25:50.they get up the straight towards flight number seven. Across The Bay

:25:55. > :25:58.behind them as they get over seven in good style. Two lengths to Smad

:25:58. > :26:04.Place, who is cracking the favourite. Restless Harry, a length

:27:09. > :27:14.behind them is Smad Place. They are clear of Crack Away Jack. Both

:27:14. > :27:18.jockeys are sitting up OK. Tidal Bay is tailed off as they head

:08:44. > :08:50.changed Becher's Brook massively, it's not the fence I used to ride

:08:50. > :08:53.over and I worry about the race now. Well, I have been joined by Mick,

:08:53. > :08:58.another Grand National-winning jockey and Chris, advisory to

:08:58. > :09:02.Aintree. We heard from Richard saying he is still concerned about

:09:02. > :09:05.the quality of this race and what the changes mean to the actual

:09:06. > :09:10.status of the Grand National. What are your thoughts? The thing is I

:09:10. > :09:13.don't want anything to detract from the race as it is. As far as I am

:09:13. > :09:17.concerned it is the world's greatest steeplechase, that's the

:09:17. > :09:24.way I want it to remain. You can see why they've made changes, but

:09:24. > :09:27.it takes away a little bit of the allure. Now you don't have to be

:09:28. > :09:33.that brave any more, they're all going to pack together. They all

:09:33. > :09:42.will not want to give away any ground. Chris, we chatted earlier

:09:42. > :09:46.about how many measures Aintree and the BHA have put in place. We saw -

:09:46. > :09:49.Gottany O's was sadly put down after that fall. There is an

:09:49. > :09:53.element of risk that will never be taken away from the sport.

:09:53. > :09:56.course there is. Racing is a competitive sport. Just as in any

:09:56. > :10:00.competitive sport Formula One racing, athletics, football, which

:10:00. > :10:05.ever sport you care to look at, there's risk attached to it. What

:10:05. > :10:08.Aintree is absolutely passionate about, in conjunction with the BHA,

:10:08. > :10:12.the authority that look after the regulations of the sport, they're

:10:12. > :10:15.very, very keen to make this as safe as possible. We can identify

:10:15. > :10:20.risks, if we can identify them we can mitigate them and make it as

:10:20. > :10:25.safe as possible for horses to compete. And the challenge is doing

:10:25. > :10:31.that without detracking from what Mick -- detract from what Mick

:10:31. > :10:34.described as the allure. We want to make it a safe challenge. We were

:10:34. > :10:37.watching the the conditions here and lots of different measures and

:10:37. > :10:40.a lot of trainers are saying how great this particular facility is.

:10:40. > :10:43.What are your thoughts on what you have seen? I am really pleased.

:10:43. > :10:47.It's a very impressive structure. The fact they've a dedicated area

:10:47. > :10:50.where the horses can come and get treated as well. What I would like

:10:50. > :10:54.to know is when we see a horse fall outside there on the track, where

:10:54. > :10:58.does it go because the viewers at home see the horse fall and where

:10:58. > :11:03.does it go to get aftercare? have a fleet of horse ambulances

:11:03. > :11:07.out there who are able to bring the horses back in a safe fashion. The

:11:07. > :11:10.vet surgeons in the field will put bandages on or suitable support or

:11:11. > :11:16.even administer medication so that the trip back to the course stables

:11:16. > :11:22.is safe. We then have a team of three vets working in the stables

:11:23. > :11:27.who will then assess that horse and treat the horse as necessary. If it

:11:27. > :11:33.needs specialist diagnostics done we can X-ray, if it needs more or

:11:33. > :11:39.surgery, for example, it can be transported to the University of

:11:39. > :11:42.Liverpool Equine Hospital. One of the best facilities in the country,

:11:42. > :11:47.if not the world. What we have here for horse and rider in terms of

:11:47. > :11:52.safety measures is as good as there And every improvement is hugely

:11:52. > :11:57.welcomed. Grumeti there having a good shake. Look at those ears go,

:39:46. > :39:50.Ball has run. AP's horse has stayed on very well, Burton Port. So has

:44:50. > :44:54.wouldn't be in with a shout and that's part of the reason he was

:44:54. > :44:58.here. But you have to say also early on in the race he was sticky

:44:58. > :45:02.at the fences, I just wasn't sure. Tom will tell you more about that.

:45:02. > :45:07.But Tom gave him a superb ride anyway and we are delighted.

:15:20. > :15:23.doing enough on him. He has given him a lovely ride. A great run from
