:04:40. > :04:43.Very warm, it's close in terms of temperature but occasionally a
:04:43. > :04:47.breeze comes across to ruffle the hair of Willie Carson, a man an
:04:47. > :04:51.expert at riding around this course. Used to be, Claire. You were. It
:04:51. > :04:57.provides such a challenge. What do you make of only nine runners for
:04:57. > :05:01.the Derby? The smallest field in 105 years. Camelot, who was
:05:01. > :05:06.champion two-year-old, superstar, came out and won the Guineas and

:05:09. > :05:14.get a place have stayed at home, because they've said to themselves
:05:14. > :05:21.it's a waste of time because Camelot is such a good horse. Don't
:05:21. > :05:25.forget we have other horses in the race, as well. Yes, yes. My brother
:05:25. > :05:28.trains the second favourite Bonfire and there is a pub not far from
:05:28. > :05:32.here and in the middle of the night a ghostly figure appears and writes
:05:32. > :05:37.the name of the horse they think will win in chalk above the wishing
:05:37. > :05:40.well. They've been right out of nine years. Eight out of the last
:05:41. > :05:46.13 they've been right. So it's a very good tipster. The name they
:05:46. > :05:49.have put in chalk this year... Bonfire. Let's see if there will be
:05:49. > :05:52.a bit of heat tomorrow! Exactly. There will be fireworks early. The
:05:52. > :05:57.last time everybody saw you was in the jungle. It's almost as warm
:05:57. > :06:02.here today as there. You did brilliantly, by the way.
:06:02. > :06:06.survived. You survived very well. Excel hrpbt. -- excellent. It's
:06:06. > :06:10.nice to be back here with you, Claire. It will be maybe our last
:06:10. > :06:20.Derby meeting but there we go. Let's look at what we have in store
:06:20. > :06:35.
:06:35. > :06:36.between now and 4.30pm this the world, the Queen, will be here
:06:36. > :06:39.tomorrow. Mick Fitzgerald and Willie Carson
:06:39. > :06:41.will take us through the totally unique course. We go up and down
:06:41. > :06:43.the Epsom Downs. We will be looking at Camelot, the
:06:43. > :06:47.horse named after a mythical kingdom, he comes into the Derby
:06:48. > :06:54.unbeaten and an odds-on favourite. Also, today we go behind the scenes
:06:54. > :06:57.in Newmarket to find out more about the trainer William Haggas who won
:06:57. > :07:07.The Oaks last year and could do this year with Vow. We have five
:07:07. > :07:40.
:07:40. > :07:46.way to the start for the Princess Elizabeth Stakes. This is our first
:07:46. > :07:53.live race and that's the favourite, Lay Time, ridden by Jimmy Fortune.
:07:53. > :07:58.Here is Jim with the full list. So, let's look at them for this
:07:58. > :08:08.first race at the Investec Derby Festival.
:08:08. > :08:26.
:08:26. > :08:34.where masses of money will be piling on both for tomorrow's races
:08:34. > :08:44.and today, we join John Parrot. Yes, an opening race here. Sees a
:08:44. > :08:52.
:08:53. > :08:58.well backed favourite, Lay Time now Lay Time.
:08:58. > :09:02.The favourite here, Lay Time, has been well backed, here is a lovely
:09:02. > :09:11.slow-motion start of her. This is her first start of the season.
:09:11. > :09:14.She's beautifully bred, by Gallileo. That's Lay Time on the way down to
:09:14. > :09:20.the start. She's been working well at home and looked progressive last
:09:20. > :09:24.year and they take quite a while to get down to the start and just
:09:24. > :09:28.steady themselves up. There's a saying, Claire, and the first horse
:09:28. > :09:32.you see usually wins. Well, she was the first to post and she was the
:09:32. > :09:37.first horse that we saw on the track today. So, if the old saying
:09:37. > :09:43.goes, the first horse you see will win, this filly will win. Six of
:09:43. > :09:46.the other stats to be aware of - six of the last eight eight
:09:46. > :09:54.favourites have won. She is the favourite. Barefoot Lady is a very
:09:54. > :09:58.useful filly and she is a four- year-old. She won a decent race on
:09:59. > :10:05.her re-appearance last year. That's over a year ago. But she is not
:10:05. > :10:14.very big. But she is a tough filly. You remember last year when she won
:10:14. > :10:18.the Nell Gyn. She ran at York last time and she's very, very brave. I
:10:18. > :10:24.would imagine if she handles this Epsom track she will run another
:10:24. > :10:27.very, very bold race today. Richard Fahey has had winners all
:10:27. > :10:37.over the place. He is a good trainer, especially when he brings
:10:37. > :10:37.
:10:37. > :10:43.his horses south. Here we are. The colours there of Princess Hai. Gave
:10:43. > :10:46.birth to a son a few months ago. Joviality here, out of interest, is
:10:46. > :10:51.a half-sister, the same mother as Bonfire who runs obviously tomorrow
:10:51. > :10:58.in the Derby. She and Barefoot Lady are closely linked on form because
:10:58. > :11:04.she just pipped Barefoot Lady at York last May. A lovely filly.
:11:04. > :11:10.She's a very nice filly and John Gosden started the season off very
:11:10. > :11:15.well. His horses are in top form. He was another nice filly that's
:11:15. > :11:19.going to give a very bold show for herself, but I believe this filly,
:11:19. > :11:22.she's actually... Clinical. She's going to prep for Ascot. Whatever
:11:22. > :11:31.she does today she's going to run at Ascot, so I would imagine she
:11:31. > :11:35.will run even better at Ascot. That's Clinical, trained by Sir
:11:35. > :11:38.Mark Prescott. Has Worthadd coming up later. Seb Sanders not riding.
:11:38. > :11:48.Wonder where he is today. He usually rides these horses. But he
:11:48. > :11:53.is not here today. Of course, Sir Mark Prescott's horse in the next
:11:53. > :11:56.race - he always rides the Italian horse. A glimpse there of Boastful.
:11:56. > :12:01.Lay Time our favourite at 13-8 ahead of Barefoot Lady and
:12:01. > :12:05.Joviality. Here is Jim. They're set to go. They're off and
:12:05. > :12:08.running. Away to a fair start, on the
:12:08. > :12:12.outside Navarra Queen jumped OK but Barefoot Lady driving through on
:12:12. > :12:17.the inside to take up the early running. On the outside the grey
:12:17. > :12:21.Clinical goes into second. Joviality behind them. That's
:12:22. > :12:25.Boastful fighting for a head early. They settle as the pace increases
:12:25. > :12:31.slightly. On the outside Lay Time, trapped three wide as they go to
:12:31. > :12:35.the highest point of the course. A length and a half to Night Lily.
:12:35. > :12:45.They swing left-handed now, about to freewheel downhill. Valencha is
:12:45. > :12:49.last. The leader is Barefoot Lady. He's put on the brakes slightly.
:12:49. > :12:54.The outside Lay Time, is trapped out wide. They run down the hill.
:12:54. > :12:58.They're followed further back on the inside by Night Lily. Then
:12:58. > :13:02.Navarra Queen and Valencha. Around the corner. The leader is Barefoot
:13:02. > :13:05.Lady, by a half length. On the outer Clinical, the grey. Tucked
:13:05. > :13:10.behind them in third the green jacket of Joviality. Followed out
:13:11. > :13:14.wider by Boastful. Then Lay Time moving up now on the outside. Has
:13:14. > :13:19.been wide throughout. Night Lily followed by Navarra Queen. Three
:13:19. > :13:22.lengths to Valencha. They set sail for the home strait. Clinical moved
:13:22. > :13:26.up to put a head in front. Goes a neck up. Barefoot Lady is fighting
:13:26. > :13:30.back as they pass the two. Here is Navarra Queen, launched from the
:13:30. > :13:34.rear. Now Joviality starting to get into the clear. But off balance.
:13:34. > :13:38.It's Clinical the leader as they race up with a furlong to go. Leads
:13:38. > :13:42.bay length to Barefoot Lady. Then Joviality starting to stride home
:13:42. > :13:46.now. In front is Clinical. Joviality absolutely flying down
:13:46. > :13:49.the outside. But Clinical has held on. Clinical
:13:49. > :13:58.beat Joviality. In third was Barefoot Lady. Followed by Navarra
:13:58. > :14:03.Queen, and then Lay Time. Behind them was Night Lily, Valencha and a
:14:03. > :14:12.last Boastful. Clinical, is the winner of the principle des --
:14:12. > :14:22.Princess Elizabeth Stakes. Trained by Sir Mark Prescott. In second is
:14:22. > :14:26.
:14:26. > :14:30.Joviality, ridden by will yap Buick Clinical. There she is on the
:14:30. > :14:35.inside. She sat up there, just poised behind Barefoot Lady all the
:14:35. > :14:40.way and she had enough in hand. Joviality just couldn't handle it,
:14:40. > :14:44.she was off balance in the final furlong. Still ran on very well for
:14:44. > :14:49.a creditible second. Barefoot Lady up there all the way. In fourth was
:14:49. > :14:53.Navarra Queen, who ran home well for the German stable. Lay Time,
:14:53. > :14:58.and trapped a little wide early and that's been against her. She was
:14:58. > :15:07.trapped three wide down the hill. We see them stride up towards the
:15:07. > :15:12.line now. The red, white and blue colours on the inside. Luke Morris
:15:12. > :15:18.winning on Clinical and getting the money well. So, a bright start to
:15:18. > :15:22.the meeting for chiefly Park and Luke Morris rides the first winner.
:15:22. > :15:32.Three quarters of a length and one length the distances and the time
:15:32. > :15:32.
:15:32. > :15:37.won three listed races in succession in Germany. And they
:15:37. > :15:43.thought OK, that is enough, let's send her off to stud. They decided
:15:43. > :15:53.to keep her in training and the owners have had a very good strike
:15:53. > :15:54.
:15:54. > :15:59.rate in this race. They won it in 2006 and 2007. Luke Morris, who has
:15:59. > :16:06.had a brilliant winter here in England, he finished second to Joe
:16:06. > :16:11.Fanning in the jockeys championship. He's been riding out of his skin.
:16:11. > :16:15.Of course, on the all-weather, you always get your horse up in the ban
:16:15. > :16:19.as it were! He's done that here. He's been in the right place at the
:16:19. > :16:24.right time. He didn't have to find too much. All he had to do was stay
:16:24. > :16:29.on at the finish and where the fourth horse here, he came from
:16:29. > :16:36.second last, that is Navarra Queen, who has ran a very good race, but
:16:36. > :16:41.just ran out of petrol. Here, Luke Morris - could this guy - he could
:16:41. > :16:46.be vying for Champion jockey one day. It is possible. I wonder
:16:46. > :16:50.whether also - she is not a big filly? Big enough! My point is on
:16:50. > :16:54.these undulations, compared to Joviality, I wonder if perhaps you
:16:54. > :17:02.are better off being a small, nimble sort? Of course, now if we
:17:02. > :17:07.go to the Winser Forest Stakes at Ascot, -- Windsor Forest Stakes at
:17:07. > :17:13.Ascot, which one would you prefer? Joviality. Yes. Let's not take
:17:13. > :17:19.nothing away from this filly today. This is her seventh win, you know.
:17:19. > :17:25.She is a good filly. Obviously, they will be thinking of maybe
:17:25. > :17:34.upgrading her maybe and try and win a Group 3 somewhere. She has been a
:17:34. > :17:40.very good servant to the Cheveley Park stud. Very well done. She is a
:17:40. > :17:49.daughter of Motivator, who won the Derby. There she is, too. She is
:17:49. > :17:59.bred to do the job at Epsom. Ridden by Luke Morris today. Sir Mark
:17:59. > :18:06.Prescott is one of Cheveley Park stud's long-standing trainers.
:18:06. > :18:13.Here's the posing for the photograph. A great moment winning
:18:13. > :18:17.here on Oaks day. That is the scene in the winner's enclosure. Let's
:18:17. > :18:20.join Rishi Persad. I'm going to grab a word with Luke
:18:20. > :18:30.Morris. Congratulations. Fantastic season and things seem to be
:18:30. > :18:34.
:18:34. > :18:39.getting better for you. A great ride? Things are going well. Sir
:18:39. > :18:45.Mark... She's a tough filly. They have gone a decent gallop. She was
:18:45. > :18:52.the one who was able to quicken up off it? I got a perfect sit and
:18:52. > :18:58.when I loosened her up, she stuck her head down to the line. What
:18:58. > :19:04.about the ground? We have had a dry spell in the south? It is on the
:19:04. > :19:09.quick side of good. Perfect ground, really. Well done. Thanks. If we
:19:09. > :19:12.can have a word with Sir Mark? He is having a chat with the
:19:12. > :19:16.successful Cheveley Park team. Congratulations. A filly who is
:19:16. > :19:21.proving game and ready for her first run of the season? Yeah, she
:19:21. > :19:24.was third in it last year, when she was a three-year-old - that was a
:19:24. > :19:29.good run. She won three listed races in the autumn. It was almost
:19:29. > :19:33.a bit of a disappointment because we couldn't get a Group win into
:19:33. > :19:37.her. Really, she can only justify staying in training another year,
:19:38. > :19:43.if she wins a Group race. Thank God she's done it. It is important to
:19:43. > :19:46.have a good year this year, she has such a tremendous pedigree. Her dam
:19:46. > :19:53.was also racing in the Cheveley Park colours? That's right. I have
:19:53. > :19:58.been lucky enough to have lots of them - Cupid's Glory - they are a
:19:58. > :20:08.straightforward family and they make training easy. Don't say that!
:20:08. > :20:10.
:20:11. > :20:20.What about Worthadd later on in the Investec Diomed Stakes? Everything
:20:20. > :20:25.he said about him has been spot on. Making your job easy again!
:20:25. > :20:31.partnership remains in act. The one thing I think - we wonder if the
:20:31. > :20:38.ground will be firm enough for him. Other than that, he has an
:20:38. > :20:45.excellent chance. Thank you. So the winner of the Princess
:20:45. > :20:50.Elizabeth Stakes was Clinical at 7- 1. It is one for the bookmakers.
:20:50. > :20:57.Fingers burnt with Lay Time. She is such a sweet filly, this. She keeps
:20:57. > :21:04.pricking her ears and looking at the camera going, "Oh, hello, is
:21:04. > :21:07.all the attention on me?" Let's take a full look at the race with
:21:07. > :21:13.Ian Bartlett and Mick Fitzgerald. Yes, let's look at the start of
:21:13. > :21:19.this race. One of them in the early part of the race, Boastful, she
:21:19. > :21:23.pulls too hard. There is the winner and there is Barefoot Lady. She
:21:23. > :21:28.sets the gallop. It is Boastful who ruins her chance in the early part
:21:28. > :21:34.of the race. She is an import from France. She was too fizzed up today.
:21:34. > :21:43.She was. You can see it's a bit of a job here. The start is very
:21:43. > :21:48.important. Willie Carson says it is important at this stage to be in a
:21:48. > :21:52.good slot. The eventual winner Clinical is next to Barefoot Lady.
:21:52. > :21:59.You can see Boastful in behind taking a real hold and fighting her
:21:59. > :22:05.rider. Let's move on to the half- way stage of the race. Here is the
:22:05. > :22:08.favourite, Lay Time. At this point, Mick, Jimmy Fortune decided to make
:22:08. > :22:12.his ground around the outside. She is in a beautiful position. She
:22:12. > :22:17.can't pick up in the closing stages? She can't. I have spoken to
:22:17. > :22:21.Jimmy and he said the ground is a bit loose. It won't suit every
:22:21. > :22:26.horse. This is where she's come through now into third position.
:22:26. > :22:31.She is only a length or so behind the eventual winner. There, three
:22:31. > :22:36.furlongs out, the warning signs are there. She will get brushed by
:22:36. > :22:41.Navarra Queen and Joviality. But her chance had already gone? Yes.
:22:41. > :22:46.The other horses are finishing well. Sir Mark Prescott will be delighted
:22:46. > :22:52.with his horse. He's done it the hard way. She was third in this
:22:52. > :22:56.race 12 months ago. Joviality, the green jacket, she would have gone
:22:56. > :23:01.closer if she had handled the course? I think so. She had every
:23:01. > :23:05.opportunity. If you ask William Buick, he said it wouldn't have
:23:05. > :23:13.mattered if he had gone round again, he probably wouldn't have got by
:23:13. > :23:17.her. Clinical is the first winner of the day. This was Mark Prescott
:23:17. > :23:21.watching Clinical move from second into first. He is a cool customer,
:23:21. > :23:28.Sir Mark. He doesn't show too much emotion. His horses get going -
:23:28. > :23:35.look at him! That is brilliant. His stable staff get more animated.
:23:35. > :23:43.That is head girl there. She does that very well. Sir Mark, with this
:23:43. > :23:52.filly, he has travelled her quite a lot. He has travelled her with
:23:52. > :24:02.success. He has been to Ireland. The presentation being made there.
:24:02. > :24:07.
:24:07. > :24:12.Investec, the sponsors of all our races. Sir Mark can be firm with
:24:12. > :24:18.his jockeys? He usually gives you a letter with the instructions in it.
:24:18. > :24:23.Does he? Oh yes! Always has done. I remember those. I have known him
:24:23. > :24:28.since and he said I was never able to do what I was told on the
:24:28. > :24:33.letters. Why? I don't know. That was his opinion. Interesting. I
:24:33. > :24:38.never knew that. He has his certain waips that he likes his horse --
:24:38. > :24:44.ways that he likes his horses to be ridden. The jockey gets a letter
:24:44. > :24:50.and is told how to ride it in that letter. We will find out whether he
:24:50. > :24:53.has written it in Italian! Today and tomorrow, the Diamond Jubilee
:24:53. > :24:56.Weekend starts early. The Queen will be here tomorrow. We thought
:24:56. > :25:00.we would take the opportunity to focus on some of the people who
:25:00. > :25:04.have either ridden for the Queen, or trained for the Queen, or been
:25:04. > :25:13.involved in her racing interests and what pleasure that has given
:25:13. > :25:19.them. To train for the Queen is a real
:25:19. > :25:23.honour. She could easily have been a trainer herself, I am sure, if
:25:23. > :25:27.she hadn't been the Queen. I find it incredibly easy dealing with her.
:25:27. > :25:32.She makes you extremely comfortable when you are talking to her. Part
:25:32. > :25:37.of the reason for that is she loves being with her horses. She has
:25:37. > :25:41.loved racing for such a long time. I think mainly because of her
:25:41. > :25:45.involvement through the breeding side. Breeders have I think a
:25:45. > :25:49.deeper passion for the sport than people who go and buy horses. You
:25:49. > :25:53.feel as though they are your children. Indeed, in the Queen's
:25:53. > :25:57.case, she's - some of these are fourth or 5th Generation, maybe
:25:57. > :26:02.more even. She has a wealth of knowledge and most incredible
:26:02. > :26:06.memory. She can reel off pedigrees going back generations. It is
:26:06. > :26:11.extraordinary. It is a handsome individual. Shows great promise.
:26:11. > :26:16.always talked about horses. She would talk for half an hour. Then
:26:16. > :26:21.one day, the date that Mrs Thatcher was elected Prime Minister, I was
:26:21. > :26:27.talking to her. She suddenly said, "Ian, what do you think about our
:26:27. > :26:34.new Prime Minister?" I said, "It is extraordinary to think we are going
:26:34. > :26:39.to be governed by a woman!" And there was silence at the other end
:26:39. > :26:49.of the phone. I thought, "Oh God, what have I said?" She laughed.
:26:49. > :26:52.
:26:52. > :26:58.She's always laughed about it. It was a bit of a slip. There is a
:26:58. > :27:07.lady getting in the mood for Diamond Jubilee Weekend. My father
:27:07. > :27:13.finishing off those tales. I always thought it was to the Queen's
:27:13. > :27:16.credit that (a) she laughed and (b) she kept horses with him! He will
:27:16. > :27:26.be here tomorrow. Very much soaking up the atmosphere, one member of
:27:26. > :27:30.our team who gets the job of talking to people is Sonali Shah.
:27:30. > :27:39.Thank you very much. I can confirm everything that you have been
:27:39. > :27:42.saying this morning. It really does feel like that Jubilee weekend has
:27:42. > :27:46.started early. This really does feel that extra bit special. It
:27:46. > :27:51.feels very different here, almost like everyone's on their best
:27:51. > :27:56.behaviour, like they know they are part of something bigger this year.
:27:56. > :28:02.Of course, it is Ladies' Day which means it is all about fashion and
:28:02. > :28:06.style and everyone has stepped it up a gear. I tried the patriotic
:28:06. > :28:10.vibe myself. There is a fashion competition going on. There are
:28:10. > :28:15.photographers and stylists going amongst the crowd to scout the
:28:15. > :28:20.best-dressed. I have scouted a few myself. Hello. You are all looking
:28:20. > :28:26.great. Thank you. What made you choose this outfit? I always knew I
:28:26. > :28:31.was going to wear this dress. I found the hat in a vintage shop.
:28:31. > :28:36.noticed your gloves. That is what Her Majesty does! You certainly
:28:36. > :28:42.have got the Royal theme. Thank you. Kate, does it feel good to be part
:28:42. > :28:47.of the Jubilee weekend? It is a day early. But everyone is in that
:28:47. > :28:52.holiday mood? Definitely. I work in London. I have been part of the
:28:52. > :28:57.Jubilee build-up. It feels great to be here. Lots of people have taken
:28:57. > :29:03.part in it. People seem to have made an effort this year. As soon
:29:03. > :29:07.as that race was on, everyone went crazy and they were misbehaving
:29:07. > :29:10.more! You girls have had a winner. You will enjoy your day. Thank you
:29:11. > :29:14.very much. Good luck in the competition. We are going to be
:29:14. > :29:18.speaking about the Queen's style later on in the show and just after
:29:18. > :29:26.3.00pm, we will be announcing the winner of that style competition
:29:26. > :29:29.live on BBC Two. We are talking about winners and
:29:29. > :29:34.Andy, your approach is slightly different. You are a speed ratings
:29:34. > :29:38.man? I spend a lot of time doing a lot of speed figures. I think it
:29:38. > :29:42.gives you an impression of how fast horses can run. Because those times
:29:42. > :29:47.aren't in the public domain, it does give you an edge. That is what
:29:47. > :29:57.you are looking for. If we look at the Oaks' bettering, what is your
:29:57. > :30:01.
:30:01. > :30:11.view? It is a very competitive race. On form, The Fugue is a worthy
:30:11. > :30:18.
:30:18. > :30:24.bigger prices to take your eye. Shirocco Star. Probably needed the
:30:24. > :30:29.run at Newbury. But with that run I am expecting a massive run out of
:30:29. > :30:36.that today. Tomorrow obviously the big race, the Derby. What is your
:30:36. > :30:39.views on that? It's Camelot's to lose. The opposition has been
:30:39. > :30:44.scared off. If you are a short price merchant he is the one for
:30:44. > :30:47.you. I am looking for value in the race. I probably go for Astrology.
:30:47. > :30:55.Ballydoyle have dominated the category this season. Another horse
:30:55. > :30:58.that did a good speed figure at Chester last time out. With Ryan
:30:58. > :31:02.Moore on board, he is probably the eachway angle in the race. There
:31:02. > :31:08.must be a stand out for you today somewhere. What have you come up
:31:08. > :31:13.with? Worthadd probably the one at a short price today. Sir Sir Mark
:31:13. > :31:18.Prescott had a winner already. The last race, Shohan, last time at
:31:18. > :31:24.volume ter Hampton. -- Wolverhampton. If he can translate
:31:24. > :31:27.that back to the turf. I think he is probably the one punters want to
:31:27. > :31:30.concentrate on in the last. have to do a lot of homework,
:31:30. > :31:37.haven't you? Certainly not frightened of that. I didn't like
:31:37. > :31:40.homework at school, but believe you me, it does work.
:31:40. > :31:44.Johnnie Murtagh is out there taking a good look at the course. He rides
:31:44. > :31:48.Vow in The Oaks and interestingly Stand To Reason in the next race
:31:48. > :31:54.has been withdrawn, because the trainer has decided the ground
:31:54. > :32:00.isn't suitable for him. We have heard reports from some jockeys
:32:00. > :32:03.that it's a bit loose. You talked to Jimmy Fortune. And a couple of
:32:03. > :32:06.the other lads that came in and Jimmy said it's not going to suit
:32:06. > :32:10.every horse and that's the thing you have got, when you have watered
:32:10. > :32:14.ground that's the worry. We will move on to the next race and see if
:32:14. > :32:18.we can get more clues as to which horses are suited by it and which
:32:18. > :32:25.are not. The fairground is in full swing. That will be packed tomorrow.
:32:25. > :32:30.How do you fancy that ride, Claire!? I hate those rides. That
:32:30. > :32:35.one is fine. More lady-like. Exactly. You don't want to have
:32:35. > :32:43.eaten anything before you have been on any of those. Jim can give us
:32:43. > :32:53.the full line-up for the Investec Wealth and Investment Handicap.
:32:53. > :32:54.
:32:54. > :34:01.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 67 seconds
:34:01. > :34:07.immensely well in the first race and he will have high hopes with
:34:07. > :34:13.Gatewood. The same colours that he will carry in the Derby tomorrow
:34:13. > :34:18.with Thought Worthy. Winner of two from four so far, and
:34:18. > :34:25.winning over this trip at York a fortnight ago and I think the
:34:25. > :34:28.important thing is that Goesden rates this horse and essentially he
:34:28. > :34:36.is pretty well handicapped so big chance for Gatewood. Let's hear
:34:36. > :34:40.from the trainer of Pekan Star. He doesn't run very often, is he
:34:40. > :34:44.fragile as a horse? Well, physically he is not fragile any
:34:44. > :34:49.more, he was as a young horse. He didn't run much as a young horse.
:34:49. > :34:55.But a good solid sound horse now, and I think the best time to catch
:34:55. > :34:59.this horse is fresh and I think he doesn't take a quick race so well.
:34:59. > :35:04.That's why he had his races spaced out last year. He won first time
:35:04. > :35:08.last year so we are hoping we might be able to replicate that today.
:35:08. > :35:13.won the year before as well. He had to wait to October that year. Out
:35:13. > :35:21.earlier this year. Do we take it that you have circled this race for
:35:21. > :35:26.him? I couldn't say he is anything less than a character. I think if
:35:26. > :35:33.he is going to win it might be a little bit up to him, than up to me.
:35:33. > :35:38.But not necessarily this race, I was keen to run him at a quirky
:35:38. > :35:42.track. I had actually declared to run him at Chester because I
:35:42. > :35:46.thought it might suit him, a tight track and he picked up an infection
:35:46. > :35:50.before, so I had to withdraw him. I have come here, whether he handles
:35:50. > :35:54.the track - I think he will, it will keep him interested up and
:35:54. > :35:58.around and down the hill and up the strait. Fresh and well. He is
:35:58. > :36:02.working well. He's got a ton of ability. It's just up to him if he
:36:02. > :36:10.wants to use it. We wish you well and hope he is in a good mood.
:36:10. > :36:20.Thank you very much. So the favourite is Gatewood. Now
:36:20. > :36:27.
:36:27. > :36:31.Gatewood and Borug. Amongst the jockeys on their way
:36:31. > :36:36.down to the start Frankie Dettori and Michael Barzalona riding
:36:36. > :36:39.against each other and interesting... Gatewood. Let's talk
:36:39. > :36:43.about Frankie Dettori and Michael. There's speculation this week,
:36:43. > :36:48.which was inaccurate, that Frankie might be about to retire. He
:36:48. > :36:52.doesn't have a ride in the Derby Derby tomorrow and Michael
:36:52. > :36:56.Barzalona takes a mount. There is Frankie as a young man. We know how
:36:56. > :37:01.much the public have grown to love him and he won the Derby on
:37:01. > :37:05.Unauthorised. This is his moment finally to win. We all enjoyed it
:37:05. > :37:10.with him that day. We did. Do you think that he is still every bit
:37:10. > :37:16.the top-class jockey or is - or people like Barzalona coming up to
:37:16. > :37:23.his quality and class? Claire, I am an owner of race horses and if it
:37:23. > :37:29.came to me having a very good horse, I would love Frankie to be riding
:37:29. > :37:34.my horse, in any top race, because he enjoys being the centre of
:37:34. > :37:39.attention. When he is, he is the best jockey in the weighing room.
:37:39. > :37:46.But there are days when he's not, like if he had a runner at
:37:46. > :37:49.Folkestone, I certainly wouldn't be putting him on board. But the big
:37:49. > :37:55.occasions, Frankie Dettori is the master. Last night there was a race
:37:55. > :38:02.which he won late on where Frankie didn't ride for the boys in blue,
:38:02. > :38:07.he rode for Brian Mehan and won the race and his understudy, Mr
:38:08. > :38:11.Barzalona, got in such a muddle on one of his other horses. So, it
:38:11. > :38:15.just showed that you Frankie is still the top dog. I know they're
:38:15. > :38:19.trying to bring on the young boys because it's the future, but on the
:38:19. > :38:24.big occasions that man you see in the picture is who you want on your
:38:24. > :38:28.side. It will be a very interesting test of his temperament, jest the
:38:28. > :38:32.rest of this -- just the rest of this season. It's not his fault he
:38:32. > :38:38.hasn't got a Derby ride. The other horses, only other one he might
:38:38. > :38:41.have been offered was trained by Aidan O'Brien and that's a no-no.
:38:42. > :38:47.They're setting him up for Haydock. They are important races. Look at
:38:47. > :38:51.him. He is animated and relaxed. is at Epsom. He's got the
:38:51. > :38:58.atmosphere. He is on top form and he is the guy that - I think this
:38:58. > :39:02.filly will run big because Frankie is buzzing.
:39:02. > :39:08.It's also worth remembering that Frankie Dettori, who when he took
:39:08. > :39:10.over as the main rider for Godolphin he did so in
:39:10. > :39:15.controversial circumstances. Walter Swinburne had won the Derby for the
:39:15. > :39:19.Godolphin team in 1995. Amazingly, he was replaced for the King George
:39:19. > :39:27.by Frankie Dettori. People couldn't believe that the jockey who rode
:39:27. > :39:31.the winner would be replaced. The That's what he is doing by bringing
:39:31. > :39:33.in Barzalona. They're spreading the pool of jockeys and things are
:39:33. > :39:37.changing. Frankie Dettori isn't going to be around forever so you
:39:37. > :39:41.can understand them planning. I would say Frankie is still the best
:39:41. > :39:45.of the three. As Willie said, he is still top dog. You have to think
:39:45. > :39:54.about it as a punter. If you have your last fiver in your pocket, you
:39:54. > :39:57.have a choice between Barzalona, Frankie Dettori or DeSouza. For me
:39:57. > :40:00.it would always be Frankie. Let's talk about the ground today. It's
:40:00. > :40:04.been dry as we all know in the south of England, I was here
:40:04. > :40:08.yesterday, there was water being put on, around parts of the course.
:40:08. > :40:11.A few experts walked it and thought there was no firm anywhere, do you
:40:11. > :40:14.agree? I do. You can tell by the colour of the grass. They've done a
:40:14. > :40:18.great job. It's in perfect condition. But it's not perfect for
:40:18. > :40:21.everybody. We haven't heard yet whether Kissed is going to take her
:40:22. > :40:26.chance later. We know she wants softer ground. Interesting to see
:40:26. > :40:33.what happens. Which horse will be suited in The Oaks? Maybe. I am
:40:33. > :40:39.going for Vow. The horses are at the start and
:40:39. > :40:43.there is Michael Barzalona, the new import, as it were, for Godolphin.
:40:43. > :40:47.The man we saw at the age of 19 last year winning the Investec
:40:47. > :40:52.Derby with the most thrilling late run down in the middle of the
:40:52. > :40:57.course and stood up to celebrate a full three or four strides before
:40:57. > :41:01.the line. Look at this. He stands up before the winning line. My
:41:01. > :41:07.goodness! And he said then I don't know what happened to me, it was a
:41:07. > :41:11.rush of blood to the head. Fast forward to the Dubai World Cup and
:41:11. > :41:15.here he is and even further back he stands up. He has since said I
:41:15. > :41:19.won't do it again. Thank goodness for that. We are all happy if he
:41:19. > :41:25.doesn't do that. One day he will fall off before the winning line
:41:25. > :41:30.and there will be a hoo-ha. He is still only 20, wonderfully talented
:41:30. > :41:36.rider. He is definitely the up and coming horse and we will get -- and
:41:36. > :41:43.he will get plenty of good rides for Godolphin.
:41:43. > :41:47.He is a horse that David has just acquired and he will be a bit
:41:47. > :41:52.better for the race here today. He is not 100%. But hopefully they'll
:41:52. > :41:58.be thinking he will run a good race. Let's look at Resurge who won this
:41:58. > :42:05.race last year. He is an absolute Epsom specialist. His form here
:42:05. > :42:10.reads one-two, one-two, one-50. He loves Epsom. Ran here six, seven
:42:10. > :42:14.times now. 2lbs lower than when he won this race last year and he won
:42:14. > :42:22.at Windsor last time out. So, they'll be very hopeful that he
:42:22. > :42:25.will run a big race. Stuart knows this horse really well.
:42:25. > :42:35.So your favourite remains Gatewood. All the money in the last few
:42:35. > :42:41.
:42:41. > :42:46.minutes has been a resurge for paddock before. We heard from Roger,
:42:46. > :42:49.the trainer of Pekan Star. You can see the runners down there at the
:42:49. > :42:53.start. Aidan O'Brien is about to walk the course and will make a
:42:53. > :43:03.decision on whether Kissed runs in The Oaks or not. That decision will
:43:03. > :43:05.
:43:05. > :43:13.be coming imminently. James Doyle, how good is he? He's really come to
:43:13. > :43:19.the fore, ever since Dubai this year. It was a Group 1 and he's
:43:19. > :43:29.been flying around the world now. Hong Kong and places. He has really
:43:29. > :43:32.
:43:32. > :43:36.filled his boots really big ly. He's cat a-- catapulted himself as
:43:36. > :43:41.being a Group one jockey. Aidan O'Brien, what a trainer that guy is.
:43:41. > :43:45.What a record. He's just gone in for a quickie. He's gone in to tell
:43:45. > :43:50.them whether Kissed runs or not, that's the media centre he was
:43:50. > :43:55.going into. Cry Fury, he hasn't run for quite a while. He's been gelded.
:43:55. > :43:59.He will have a chance. James Doyle riding for Roger Charlton. Steve
:43:59. > :44:05.Drown has been suffering from dizzy spells and the doctor won't let him
:44:05. > :44:09.ride again. There is a Derby- winning skwrpbg, -- jockey. Kieron
:44:10. > :44:14.Fallon. He's becoming one of the oldest boys in the weighing room.
:44:14. > :44:22.The grandad of the weighing room. He is a jockey that around Epsom
:44:22. > :44:32.you would want him on your side. Doesn't have a ride in the Derby.
:44:32. > :44:35.And doesn't in The Oaks either. Kieron Fallon going forward there
:44:35. > :44:39.on Borug. Very serious look on him, as well.
:44:39. > :44:45.Got a lovely draw. Here you always want that inside because this is
:44:45. > :44:49.not a place to be going three, four wide around it. If you get a low
:44:49. > :44:55.draw it does help your lot. Gatewood is going forward in the
:44:55. > :45:02.white colours, right in the middle. That's our favourite, Gatewood.
:45:02. > :45:12.Lovely looking horse, as well. I mentioned that George will carry
:45:12. > :45:18.
:45:18. > :45:25.those colours tomorrow. Lovely Resurge won here last year. He's
:45:25. > :45:33.now 6-1, just easing slightly. He's two pound lower in the handicap
:45:33. > :45:38.than he was last year. We will see how he gets on. They are ready,
:45:38. > :45:47.they are stet - and they are racing! -- set - and they are
:45:47. > :45:53.racing! A good level break, too. Pivotman one of the first away with
:45:53. > :46:00.Pekan Star and Creme Anglaise is DUP up there. Licence To Till is
:46:00. > :46:05.there in the centre, Rumh in eighth or ninth position. It is Creme
:46:05. > :46:10.Anglaise on the outside of Pivotman, a length-and-a-half to Licence To
:46:10. > :46:16.Till, on the outside of Pekan Star, just in behind them Ottoman Empire,
:46:16. > :46:25.they are followed by Resurge who takes up a rails position, inside
:46:25. > :46:32.Ramona Chase, then Black Spirit, trapped out wide is Haylaman,
:46:32. > :46:37.followed by Borug and further back in the field is Rumh. They charge
:46:37. > :46:40.downhill and Gatewood is last. The leader at this point is Pivotman
:46:40. > :46:48.from, on the outside, Creme Anglaise, a length-and-a-half
:46:48. > :46:57.further back Licence To Till, Pekan Star, Ottoman Empire, Black Spirit,
:46:57. > :47:01.racing outside Ramona Chase, on the inside is Resurge. They run down to
:47:01. > :47:04.Tattenham Corner. They are followed by Cry Fury, further back is Borug
:47:04. > :47:09.and they are followed by Gatewood with ten lengths to make up and
:47:09. > :47:14.Rumh is last. Into the home straight. On the inside Pivotman
:47:14. > :47:21.trying to get through is Ottoman Empire and Jamie Spencer has
:47:21. > :47:27.threaded the needle. He's a neck in front. Resurge is coming into the
:47:27. > :47:31.picture and also there is Creme Anglaise. It's Ottoman Empire, from
:47:31. > :47:36.Pivotman. Then Licence To Till who is joining in. Ottoman Empire
:47:36. > :47:39.drifting out towards the centre, Borug is coming from the clouds,
:47:39. > :47:45.Borug and Resurge, Borug takes the lead. Gatewood flying. Gatewood is
:47:45. > :47:50.going to beat them all! Gatewood got up to win from Ottoman Empire
:47:50. > :47:56.and Borug and just behind them Haylaman, they were followed by
:47:56. > :48:02.Black Spirit and Licence To Till and Cry Fury. Towards the rear, one
:48:02. > :48:09.of the last to pull up is Rumh and the absolute last past the line is
:48:09. > :48:14.Pekan Star. So the winner is Gatewood, swamped them down the
:48:14. > :48:19.outside, William Buick, gets up to win from Ottoman Empire, in third
:48:19. > :48:23.Borug and behind them in fourth place was Black Spirit. On the
:48:23. > :48:28.inside Licence To Till, on the near side Haylaman, three, four, five-
:48:28. > :48:31.deep most of the way, Mickael Barzalona. In behind them Resurge,
:48:31. > :48:37.who couldn't finish with the flourish today. They were followed
:48:37. > :48:47.by Cry Fury. In between them is Pivotman and Ramona Chase and then
:48:47. > :48:48.
:48:48. > :48:58.Creme Anglaise and then Rumh in the Godolphin Royal Blue. Let's check
:48:58. > :48:59.
:48:59. > :49:05.the one, two, three, four: First is 10 Gatewood, ridden by William
:49:06. > :49:15.Buick. In second Ottoman Empire, Jamie Spencer, third Borug ridden
:49:16. > :49:20.
:49:20. > :49:25.by Keiren Fallon and fourth was Black Spirit, Haylaman is there.
:49:25. > :49:31.This is why Epsom is such a thrilling racecourse. What a
:49:31. > :49:38.finish! William Buick sat second last - there's John Gosden. Horses
:49:38. > :49:42.are running really well for him. This horse has done this in
:49:42. > :49:46.stunning style. This is why flat- racing is so exciting to watch.
:49:46. > :49:56.Look here, William Buick for a second or two thinks, "Where am I
:49:56. > :50:01.going to go?" Mick Fitzgerald is standing
:50:01. > :50:06.alongside me. The gap comes. It is not very big. He is going to have
:50:06. > :50:09.to angle out here and go woosh! This is a split-second decision. It
:50:09. > :50:14.can go right or wrong. It's gone right for him. He waited for that
:50:14. > :50:18.gap to come. He needed an instant and he took it. Very, very exciting
:50:18. > :50:22.finish, this. You can see how good this horse must be because that is
:50:22. > :50:26.a difficult thing to do, to pick up and make up all of that ground.
:50:26. > :50:33.He's come to the middle of the track where the camber isn't as
:50:33. > :50:37.steep. There is an advantage to doing that. It was a nice, smooth,
:50:37. > :50:45.clean run. You can see the satisfaction on John Gosden's face.
:50:45. > :50:54.William Buick will think, "I got lucky there!" He is world-class as
:50:54. > :51:04.a jockey. William Buick coming back. The distance is a neck and the same.
:51:04. > :51:09.
:51:09. > :51:14.The time 2:07.19. Nothing like a win here on this Derby course.
:51:14. > :51:20.Particularly when you have the got the rides this young man has in the
:51:21. > :51:30.next 25/26 hours. He has The Fugue later on in the Oaks. He won so
:51:31. > :51:31.
:51:31. > :51:41.well at York. He's explaining to John Gosden, his retaining trainer,
:51:41. > :51:45.just what happened. The racing manager for George Strawbridge in
:51:45. > :51:53.the background. There is William Buick, a man for the big occasion.
:51:53. > :51:59.The time they ran there was 1.62 seconds slower than the Racing Post
:51:59. > :52:04.standard. It makes the win of Gatewood more meritorious. Here is
:52:04. > :52:07.the winning jockey. He could be set for a big weekend. Congratulations.
:52:07. > :52:12.A word about Gatewood, who I think has to be a good horse to have done
:52:12. > :52:17.what he did today? He got lost, he was slow away at York and slow away
:52:17. > :52:22.today. I left him alone. He got a bit lost. Frankie let me out. He
:52:22. > :52:29.done well to get there. For me, he was at the top of the straight,
:52:29. > :52:32.he's done well to win. He won despite the camber, the course and
:52:32. > :52:35.being slowly away He has quality. This could be a very good weekend
:52:35. > :52:44.for you. You want to keep your feet on the ground. The Fugue coming up,
:52:44. > :52:50.how will she enjoy the conditions? How will she go on this course?
:52:51. > :53:00.We will have to wait and see. will let you go. Well done.
:53:00. > :53:05.The punters equalise - Gatewood wins. The winner is Gatewood, your
:53:05. > :53:11.9-4 favourite. A very competitive handicap for our second race. A
:53:11. > :53:16.good performance from a horse. Black Spirit does well from here.
:53:16. > :53:23.Here is your winner and he will be at the back of the field. This
:53:23. > :53:28.horse, Borug, he breaks a bit awkwardly. He sits down as the
:53:28. > :53:35.gates opened. He sits down and he's just had to go out the back. You
:53:35. > :53:40.can see the winner and the third are in the last two after you have
:53:40. > :53:45.gone 200 yards. Yeah, the winner is almost in the all-white colours...
:53:45. > :53:50.And the second is up, a low draw, the second in the green colours
:53:50. > :53:54.with Spencer on board. He's got a very good draw, a very good start
:53:54. > :53:59.and got a good position in the race. Let's look at them coming into the
:53:59. > :54:04.home straight. There is the winner. A horse that we were talking about.
:54:04. > :54:07.Black Spirit has run OK here. He's been forced to be on the outside of
:54:07. > :54:11.the field. Yes. If you are going to pick a horse out of the race, you
:54:11. > :54:16.have to go for the winner. He's gone right round the whole field.
:54:16. > :54:19.He has travelled the furthest ground. And then the horse that
:54:19. > :54:23.finishes fourth, who was drawn right on the outside, he's had
:54:23. > :54:29.every chance there, but he ran out of petrol. He's ran a very, very
:54:29. > :54:33.good race to finish fourth. Where you see Jamie Spencer on the horse
:54:33. > :54:37.that was drawn one from the inside rail, he's had a free run, he's ran
:54:37. > :54:41.a good race as well. Why is he going towards the middle of the
:54:41. > :54:46.course? Is he getting tired? He's going up the hill and he is getting
:54:46. > :54:50.tired. Now he is starting to come down. He is getting even more tired.
:54:50. > :54:55.The camber is taking him down. But the - you see the third horse, the
:54:55. > :55:00.trainer was saying he is a quirky customer. Well, this racetrack, the
:55:00. > :55:04.going round and keeping turning, turning, turning, it makes the
:55:04. > :55:09.horses just - it keeps them alert. They always run their best races on
:55:09. > :55:13.a track like Epsom. It gets them excited because they don't know
:55:13. > :55:18.what is happening. They are going downhill, they are going up. That
:55:18. > :55:21.type of animal, you always get the best out of him at a racecourse
:55:21. > :55:26.like Epsom. Were you confident of him on the home turn? I was not, no.
:55:26. > :55:32.Were you not? No. He's come round the whole field and I would say
:55:32. > :55:36.that he has won there. He's only won by a neck there. If you ran
:55:36. > :55:40.that race again on a straight course, he would win by a lot
:55:40. > :55:44.further. Even you could ride it! Probably. After the race, William
:55:45. > :55:48.Buick was reluctant to talk about the chances of The Fugue. This man
:55:48. > :55:55.is the owner. Andrew Lloyd Webber joins me. You have the favourite
:55:55. > :56:00.for the Oaks? It is fantastic. The horse is a home-bred. We bred her
:56:00. > :56:06.mother. One of her famous ballets was The Fugue. It is a musical term.
:56:06. > :56:16.It was a well-known American ballet. The way she won at York, she won
:56:16. > :56:19.there - it was one of the most impressive things I have seen all
:56:19. > :56:22.year. It was rather extraordinary. How she will do today, I don't know.
:56:22. > :56:25.She has never done this distance before. It is longer than she has
:56:25. > :56:32.ever done. She hasn't got the greatest position. The biggest
:56:32. > :56:38.problem in my life is I am part of a fractured family. I have my wife
:56:38. > :56:44.and myself and our friends at one side of the restaurant, and the
:56:44. > :56:51.other side I have my mother-in-law because she has an interest in Vow.
:56:51. > :56:57.We are showing your reaction to The Fugue after she won. You said,
:56:57. > :57:04."Brav The Fugue!" What did your wife say after that? She said I
:57:04. > :57:09.shouldn't be so cocky. I think this whole Twitter thing is for a laugh
:57:09. > :57:18.anyway. You are great fun to follow. You don't follow anyone at all!
:57:18. > :57:22.Only you and the Dalai Lama do that. Does he race. No. You were
:57:22. > :57:27.explaining about your mother-in-law being in the syndicate who owns Vow.
:57:27. > :57:31.Is your wife with you or with her mother? With me! She's not talking
:57:31. > :57:36.to her mother at all. She seems to have got enough people. Madeleine's
:57:36. > :57:40.father is there supporting them. The family is not as it should be
:57:40. > :57:43.on a weekend when we should be celebrating. Hopefully, you will be
:57:43. > :57:48.back together, certainly if the two come to the line together... A dead
:57:48. > :57:52.heat is what I need! You will be together by Monday when we have the
:57:52. > :58:00.Diamond Jubilee Concert. You and Gary Barlow have written this
:58:00. > :58:03.fabulous song Sing which has been the video - the story goes out on
:58:03. > :58:07.Sunday? It does. Gary went around the Commonwealth to find an artist
:58:07. > :58:11.for the song. We have a chance it will go to number one, I think.
:58:11. > :58:16.That is not the point. It is just the joy of being involved in the
:58:16. > :58:23.whole thing. I shall play on Monday with gar ry. We will try not to
:58:23. > :58:27.make each -- Gary. We will try not to make each other laugh.
:58:27. > :58:31.played the song for the first time to the Queen on her birthday?
:58:31. > :58:36.That's true. We were supposed to have kept that quiet. It was going
:58:36. > :58:41.to leak out, I suppose. It was very exciting. She has said that we are
:58:41. > :58:46.allowed to say she is delighted with it. Good. That's really great.
:58:46. > :58:51.I think she was. A big weekend for you in many ways? Yes, it is. It is.
:58:51. > :58:57.I'm glad I'm not doing the song on the flotilla! That would be a worry.
:58:57. > :59:01.It is great. Really looking forward to it. Brilliant. Good luck with
:59:01. > :59:05.The Fugue. Thank you very much. Good luck on Monday as well. The
:59:05. > :59:08.owner of The Fugue. Out on the course, the track that she will
:59:08. > :59:12.have to negotiate and the other runners for the Oaks, there is
:59:12. > :59:17.Aidan O'Brien with his team of jockeys for the Oaks. The tallest
:59:17. > :59:27.is his son, Joseph, who will be on board Maybe. He will walk the whole
:59:27. > :59:28.
:59:28. > :59:31.way round and make a decision about whether Kissed can run or not.
:59:31. > :59:38.Let's take a look at this course and what the horses have to
:59:38. > :59:48.negotiate in today's Oaks and specifically in tomorrow's Derby
:59:48. > :59:55.
:59:55. > :59:59.with Willie Carson and Mick Derby winner. How important is the
:59:59. > :00:04.draw and to get a good start? the start is so important,
:00:04. > :00:08.especially in the Derby. There is usually a lot of runners. This year,
:00:08. > :00:12.there's only nine. It is important to get your horse away up this hill
:00:12. > :00:17.and across to the right-hand side. When you go up to the corner, the
:00:17. > :00:20.brow of the hill, that is where all the trouble is. That is when you
:00:21. > :00:30.get all the scrummaging. That is when you get in a lot of trouble.
:00:31. > :00:33.
:00:33. > :00:36.That is why you want to be drawn one of the most famous shots on the
:00:36. > :00:39.track. Underneath these trees. is the point you are going to think
:00:39. > :00:43.about going back across to the left side. When do you get back to the
:00:43. > :00:47.left side that is your position, it's going to be for nearly the
:00:47. > :00:50.whole of the race. You are hoping you get a good position, near the
:00:50. > :00:54.inside running rail and a bit of room to gallop in and you are
:00:54. > :01:00.hoping that you haven't used any petrol up from the start to that
:01:00. > :01:05.point. Willie, we have come to the top of
:01:05. > :01:11.the hill. Yes, it's 110 feet from the start to this point. This point
:01:11. > :01:14.here is a little plat tow, when the horses give out a big breath,
:01:14. > :01:19.because they've stopped climbing. Thank goodness we have stopped
:01:19. > :01:24.climbing! Then they start along this bit. The thing that surprised
:01:24. > :01:27.me is how much you turn. From the seven and a half, right around to
:01:27. > :01:32.Tattenham Corner into the strait, all that way you are you are
:01:32. > :01:36.turning all the time, that's why you don't want to be too wide.
:01:36. > :01:39.Coming down the hill to Tattenham Corner. The ground is still going
:01:39. > :01:44.away from you. The most important thing is not to be too wide. If you
:01:44. > :01:47.are here where we are now you are getting too wide. You want to be as
:01:47. > :01:53.close to the rail as you can, otherwise you are giving lengths
:01:53. > :01:57.away because the horse on the inside is going the shortest route.
:01:57. > :02:01.Willie Carson, you have grown. that's because I am on the slope at
:02:01. > :02:05.Epsom. You can see the ground keeps going towards the inside rail. It
:02:05. > :02:10.is quite a big slope. When you are two and a half furlongs from home,
:02:10. > :02:13.like we are now, this is when you are letting the horse off the
:02:13. > :02:17.bridle and ask it to stretch. Horses have a tendency to go
:02:17. > :02:20.towards the inside fence. You don't want that to happen. Two furlongs
:02:20. > :02:24.down there a little piece of history awaits. Nice piece of
:02:24. > :02:32.history. What happens is you have won the Epsom Derby, then you go
:02:32. > :02:41.and have a nice glass of champagne with Her Majesty the Queen. Perfect.
:02:41. > :02:45.Here at Epsom, only a handful of jockeys have really ExCelled and of
:02:45. > :02:49.the modern day riders, Johnny Murtagh has won the race three
:02:49. > :02:53.times. It's the most unique course in the world. The real test of a
:02:53. > :02:57.three-year-old colt. It is. It's the top race, they have to have
:02:57. > :03:00.everything balanced, speed, stamina. It tests every part of a horse.
:03:00. > :03:04.Some great horses win it. yourself had a spin here today,
:03:04. > :03:08.it's a test for you guys when you have to lose weight. It was nice
:03:08. > :03:12.and warm when I got here and I got here early. I ran the course. I
:03:12. > :03:16.like to try and get the race in your mind. I know how I would like
:03:16. > :03:20.to ride the race and when the gates open up I suppose a few other
:03:20. > :03:23.jockeys want to do the same but I have a plan. Hopefully I have a
:03:23. > :03:28.filly who can get me in a good position and do the job again today.
:03:28. > :03:34.Tell bus your filly, -- tell us about your filly, Vow. She's shown
:03:34. > :03:38.an enormous amount of ability in both her runs. She's so
:03:38. > :03:41.inexperienced, are you concerned by that given the atmosphere and
:03:41. > :03:45.unique nature of the course? think she will handle it. She has
:03:45. > :03:48.good balance. She has a bit of speed and should stay stay well.
:03:48. > :03:54.She's got a lot going for her. Only having her third run, which will be
:03:54. > :04:00.a disadvantage, but she's smart, quick learner and I know she hung
:04:00. > :04:06.across the last day, but she had an easy race and I said I think she
:04:06. > :04:11.will come out of the race well. People are hoping lightning can
:04:11. > :04:15.strike twice. Yourself and William teamed up last year This one is
:04:15. > :04:20.more prominent in betting, good profile. The race rode well in
:04:20. > :04:25.Lingfield. She handled the track downhill, left-handed. So, she has
:04:25. > :04:28.a lot going for her. There's a few of of them have a chance. But I am
:04:28. > :04:32.happy with her. I think she will improve from the last run and
:04:32. > :04:37.should be a live chance. Best of luck in The Oaks. Thank you.
:04:37. > :04:43.I do love my job because I have been having a good old goss with
:04:43. > :04:47.fashion historian Judith Watt. I would like to talk about the Queen,
:04:47. > :04:50.of course, because it's her weekend. She really does have her own sense
:04:50. > :04:55.of style. She always seems to know exactly what to wear. Well, she has
:04:55. > :04:59.done really for 60 years and she's fantastic at it. Remember, she was
:04:59. > :05:03.here four days after the Coronation looking beautiful in a blue coat
:05:03. > :05:07.and she's got a very, very fixed identity and she understands her
:05:07. > :05:12.role as a monarch and she's not fashionable, she's well dressed.
:05:12. > :05:16.Through that she's become iconic in her style. She's very stylish and
:05:16. > :05:20.always goes for gloves. Always wears gloves. Very formal, very
:05:20. > :05:25.old-fashioned. Always sensible shoes, block colours, fantastic
:05:25. > :05:30.pinks as she's got older. Obviously, a lot of yellow. She's become much
:05:30. > :05:36.more confident as she's got older. Tkoeu love the bright colours she
:05:36. > :05:42.wears. She always stands out. People have come a long way to see
:05:42. > :05:45.her. It must be like being an opera singer or actress, you have to
:05:45. > :05:51.stand out in a fabulous costume and that's her role. She came here just
:05:51. > :05:55.four days after her Coronation in 1953. We have some pictures to show
:05:55. > :06:01.everyone. What makes the Derby so special, how much has it changed?
:06:01. > :06:07.Well, the Investec Derby is the people's festival really, the
:06:07. > :06:16.people's fair. It's always been for the common people. We see the
:06:16. > :06:20.Pearly Kings here, the fair, it's for the people. She loves it.
:06:20. > :06:29.They're her people. Do you think it's still the same today? Yes, I
:06:29. > :06:33.do. You can look at everybody here, it's so mixed! It's so so raucous.
:06:33. > :06:41.Fashions have changed so, so much over 60 years. What are on trend at
:06:41. > :06:46.the moment? Well, what you see is a lot of hats. That's for sure.
:06:46. > :06:49.Particularly fascinaters, but also very short skirts. We have long
:06:49. > :06:54.skirts behind us but actually short skirts, that's the biggest change,
:06:55. > :06:58.is the knee, above the knee. Also women are much more confident about
:06:58. > :07:08.exposing flesh, as you can see today. That's one of the biggest
:07:08. > :07:09.
:07:09. > :07:13.changes. Thank you very much. Some fantastic shots of of Derbys
:07:13. > :07:19.in years gone by. I am sure many of you will know it was named the
:07:19. > :07:22.Derby because the Earl of Derby and Sir Charles tossed a coin and the
:07:22. > :07:26.winner would have the race named after himself and Derby won. But
:07:26. > :07:32.Sir Charles got the upper hand in the first running of the race
:07:32. > :07:42.because his horse won the first ever Derby in 1780 and it's after
:07:42. > :07:42.
:07:42. > :08:36.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 67 seconds
:08:36. > :08:46.Diomed that the next race is named. deserves to be on form. This is
:08:46. > :08:49.
:08:49. > :08:54.Worthadd. Good over shorter distances, he won an Italian Group
:08:54. > :08:57.2 over a mile as well and was back to form on his debut for his new
:08:57. > :09:02.yard winning a Group 3 two weeks ago.
:09:02. > :09:07.He looks the bit, Mick. certainly does. We are looking at

:17:55. > :17:59.He will be finding his way with this fellow. It's interesting that

:18:23. > :18:28.squashed. In between them? Yes. Myself and Jim Crowley and Dani. It
:18:28. > :18:33.was a bit unfortunate. It is just this track, the horses don't handle
:18:33. > :18:38.it. His horse ran up the camber instead of down it. It's just one

:18:51. > :18:54.England. He's got himself pretty warm. It is a very close day. It is
:18:54. > :18:59.conducive to sweating. It's no surprise to see any horse getting
:18:59. > :19:04.warm. There's a lot more going on here than just the heat. This horse

:19:09. > :19:14.race and I was roasting. I wouldn't be at all concerned about anything
:19:14. > :19:19.like that. Wearing a hood is a really good thing. James Fanshawe,
:19:19. > :19:23.who I ride for, wears them quite a lot. It sedates the horse is a
:19:23. > :19:30.little bit more. Henry Cecil uses them a lot at home, virtually all
:19:30. > :19:34.the fillies. He gets them imported from the Czech Republic. Another
:19:34. > :19:39.set of very bright colours, pink and purple this time. It's a very
:19:39. > :19:45.fluorescent field. That is St Moritz. Adrian Nicholls riding for
:19:45. > :19:51.his father. He won three of his first four starts last year. He was

:23:33. > :23:38.well all the way, but when he went for Worthadd, there wasn't a great

:24:29. > :24:31.Dover bat. Of all the runners today, and they were a bit disappointed
:24:31. > :24:40.that Lay Time ran disappointingly in the first, but that was the
:24:40. > :24:50.biggest test. My mother is there to the left. She bred Side Glance.
:24:50. > :24:51.
:24:51. > :24:55.Really pleased that has worked out as well. It didn't look as if it
:24:55. > :25:00.was on the cards. Worthadd was travelling so well, powering to the
:25:00. > :25:05.front. He will be twice the size of this little horse. He is a very big,
:25:05. > :25:11.heavy horse. I know he ran in Germany but that was a penalty kick
:25:11. > :25:16.he had in Germany. Today, he looked as though he was going to go on and
:25:16. > :25:20.win the race. But he absolutely found nothing there. He gives him a
:25:20. > :25:27.couple of taps, has a look at Side Glance, Side Glance keeps on coming
:25:27. > :25:30.with his run. Dance And Dance was running very well. Yes. But
:25:30. > :25:37.Worthadd, very disappointing. When you remember that this horse
:25:37. > :25:42.finished very strongly last year to our great Frankel at Newbury. He is
:25:42. > :25:48.a big, heavy horse. Maybe he needs this race. Going back to Side
:25:48. > :25:52.Glance, he didn't make life easy for Jimmy Fortune. He was pulling
:25:53. > :25:56.so hard, very difficult to get him into way with him because you are
:25:56. > :26:01.interrupting his stride by trying to hold him. I am amazed that he
:26:01. > :26:04.has managed to do this today. I'm thrilled for everyone involved.
:26:04. > :26:09.That is a tremendous boost for everybody. You don't want to be
:26:09. > :26:13.going into Derby day with the second favourite thinking, are the
:26:13. > :26:18.horses running all right? They are running all right. They are. The
:26:18. > :26:24.balding family are all high, including Clare Balding - she is
:26:24. > :26:34.shaking with excitement! Andrew will be able to go around Europe,
:26:34. > :26:52.
:26:52. > :26:57.Ireland and have a lot of fun with invested a small fortune. Just
:26:57. > :27:01.hearing that Kissed is out of The Oaks. Aidan O'Brien has walked the
:27:01. > :27:07.course and has decided that Kissed will not take her chance. He is
:27:07. > :27:14.down to five runners. Kissed is a non-runner. That is after Aden and
:27:14. > :27:24.his family walked the course. One to keep an eye on tonight is one of
:27:24. > :27:24.
:27:25. > :27:28.the horses at Pontefract, the 7.35. Rishi is down in the paddock now.
:27:28. > :27:33.I've got Jimmy Fortune with me. I thought Worthadd was getting away
:27:33. > :27:38.from you. I thought you showed great guts to stick it out. I run a
:27:38. > :27:44.bit keen early on. No fault of the horse. The horse ahead was running
:27:44. > :27:48.Keane and kept setting the alight. I wanted to hang on and not get
:27:48. > :27:55.there too early, because he used up a fair bit of energy before that.
:27:55. > :27:59.Were you aware of Dance And Dance coming on the outside as well?
:27:59. > :28:04.Well done. I'm going to try and grab a word with the winning
:28:04. > :28:08.trainer. If I could just disturb Andrew for a moment. I've been told
:28:08. > :28:15.by the boss of the show, Claire, your sister, to have a word with
:28:15. > :28:18.you. He had a big task gone against Worthadd on the official figures,
:28:18. > :28:23.but he has shown real guts and determination in the closing stages
:28:23. > :28:28.today. He is a talented horse on his day. He did plenty wrong today
:28:28. > :28:33.on the track, I thought, but he managed to get away with it. And it
:28:33. > :28:39.is a brace the family have won before, Passing Glance. Yes, a very
:28:39. > :28:42.underrated stallion. He is the best probably. He didn't get the
:28:42. > :28:48.greatest mares to cover and his done very well. Will we see Side
:28:48. > :28:53.Glance at the Royal meeting? would have thought so. We are
:28:53. > :28:57.discussing it now. It's lovely to have a winner today. I think we
:28:57. > :29:07.will run in the Queen Anne. Someone has to finish second or third.
:29:07. > :29:15.
:29:15. > :29:20.Things are looking up after a Lay Dance And Dance at 5-1. Mac Love
:29:20. > :29:27.was third at 25-1. For the punter who had 40,000 on Worthadd,
:29:27. > :29:32.there's only one word - ouch! We've heard all about the winner.
:29:32. > :29:36.Let's have a look at a couple of horses who got beat in this.
:29:36. > :29:41.Worthadd, you see him there with the noseband. St Moritz in the
:29:41. > :29:46.purple and pink jacket. He'd run very well by getting a soft lead in
:29:46. > :29:52.this race 12 months ago. Obviously, Adrian Nichols wanted exactly the
:29:52. > :29:58.same thing. He starts slowly but to get them up there. He has got into
:29:58. > :30:02.a decent enough position. Mirco Demuro is sitting behind him. I
:30:02. > :30:06.think Jimmy Fortune would have been delighted with the break he got.
:30:06. > :30:10.Both he in the yellow jacket and Worthadd, in the pink and green
:30:10. > :30:15.jacket, just moving through to second place. He did Tank a long,
:30:15. > :30:19.this horse, with the noseband. That was the start of the race. Let's go
:30:19. > :30:23.to the closing stages. Here is Worthadd with the noseband and then
:30:23. > :30:27.the eventual winner in behind him. I got the impression that the
:30:27. > :30:32.ground, which is perhaps a bit faster than Worthadd normally has
:30:32. > :30:35.won on, was his undoing to date. Looking at it, you can see where
:30:35. > :30:39.Mirco Demuro is sitting in and asking him to lend them here. But
:30:39. > :30:44.there is no real response. Maybe that is just down to the fact that
:30:44. > :30:48.there's not enough juice in the ground for him. The ground is just
:30:48. > :30:53.that little bit quicker, it doesn't suit them all. But it certainly
:30:53. > :30:57.suited Jimmy Fortune's course. If he is grabbing the ground. Dance
:30:57. > :31:02.And Dance in the blue-and-white, one from the left. Coming into
:31:02. > :31:05.second position. A good run from Side Glance. The trainer is saying
:31:05. > :31:10.he's after Royal Ascot, the first race of the meeting. But I would
:31:10. > :31:20.give Worthadd another chance when he is on softer ground. Without a
:31:20. > :31:31.
:31:31. > :31:36.shadow of a doubt. Don't ride off the Oaks. Kissed is out. The Aidan
:31:36. > :31:41.O'Brien team is down to five and Toptempo doesn't run.
:31:41. > :31:46.So, it's been a fabulous day so far. I think the crowds have turned out
:31:46. > :31:54.in full force for Ladies Day. Let's take you through the story of the
:31:54. > :31:58.day. The best thing about coming racing
:31:58. > :32:03.is the chance to relax, enjoy yourself. Andrew Lloyd Webber here
:32:03. > :32:09.with his wife. Sheikh Mohammed here and in between people backing
:32:09. > :32:14.winners and cheering home winners. Clinical took the first. And those
:32:14. > :32:17.who collected at 7-1 were laughing. Thrilling finish for the second
:32:17. > :32:21.race. William Buick coming from second last on Gatewood, the
:32:21. > :32:25.favourite, to snatch the race a couple of strides before the line.
:32:25. > :32:32.He looks a very, very promising and capable horse. Those who have
:32:32. > :32:37.studied the form were all on Worthadd for the Diomed stakes. But
:32:37. > :32:41.Side Glance came through to win the race for Andrew Balding and Jimmy
:32:41. > :32:46.Fortune and for the Sheikh who bought the horse last year. So far,
:32:46. > :32:54.two teams that we know will be together tomorrow for the Derby,
:32:54. > :33:00.William Buick and George and onGosden and Andrew Balding and
:33:00. > :33:04.Jimmy, Bonfire. It keeps the confidence here. We could see Aidan
:33:04. > :33:07.O'Brien win The Oaks. It's always nice to get a winner just before
:33:07. > :33:12.the big event, because it just helps your confidence and that's
:33:12. > :33:18.why we talk about Frankie Dettori and his confidence. Everybody is
:33:18. > :33:28.exactly the same. Big cheer rang out as Andrew Balding went forward
:33:28. > :33:31.
:33:31. > :33:37.to accept the award. Jimmy Fortune coming forward, as
:33:37. > :33:41.well. So Ryan Moore, who lines up
:33:41. > :33:46.tomorrow in the Derby as the only jockey who's won it before, no
:33:46. > :33:53.longer has a ride in The Oaks. Kissed is out. He will watch from
:33:53. > :33:57.the sidelines., but so will plenty of people. He rides Dunn'o in the
:33:57. > :34:02.next. 232 years of Derby history and never in all of that time have
:34:02. > :34:05.a father and son combined to win the Derby. It could happen tomorrow.
:34:05. > :34:12.The odds-on favourite is named after a mythical kingdom, he is
:34:12. > :34:22.ridden by Joseph O'Brien, who is only 19, for his father Aidan.
:34:22. > :34:28.Could Camelot write his equine name into legend?
:34:28. > :34:34.There's been a lot of history with Bally boil and Derby -- Ballydoyle
:34:34. > :34:43.and big race winners on the flat. You need a very balanced horse.
:34:43. > :34:50.Camelot does both of those things. He always does his work very easy,
:34:51. > :34:58.he is relaxed and lovely slick mover.
:34:58. > :35:01.Plenty of pressure and high expectations for the horse. Every
:35:01. > :35:11.jockey anywhere in the world, all they want to do is to ride a
:35:11. > :35:11.
:35:11. > :35:18.favourite in the Derby and to win the Derby. You always look like -
:35:18. > :35:26.he looks like a Derby horse. And Camelot has the chance to do
:35:26. > :35:30.what no colt has done since 1970, and no horse has done since 1985,
:35:30. > :35:33.if you look at the list of the five classics, and see of the three-
:35:33. > :35:41.year-olds only, all of the horses only get one shot at this. But if
:35:41. > :35:45.you win the 2000 Guineas, the Derby and St Leger or oaks and St Leger
:35:45. > :35:52.you complete the triple Crown and that's an elusive prize and it may
:35:52. > :36:02.be the ultimate target for calm rot. No -- Camelot. No colt has done it
:36:02. > :36:06.
:36:06. > :36:10.since 1970. You see the different you have speed to win the Guineas,
:36:10. > :36:16.and you need speed, balance and brilliance to win the Derby. Of
:36:16. > :36:21.course, you need the stamina to win the St Leger and it looks as though
:36:21. > :36:24.we have just might have a horse this year in Camelot to go and do
:36:24. > :36:29.all three. Of course, we are saying all three. He hasn't won the second
:36:29. > :36:34.one yet! But he is odds on to do so. He does look as though he might be
:36:34. > :36:39.one of the horses that will go and try for the triple Crown. It would
:36:39. > :36:45.be very, very nice for the whole of racing to see that happen. It's not
:36:45. > :36:51.so good for the horse himself, but... In terms of his stallion
:36:51. > :37:00.volume? -- value? People don't regard a horse who reupbs the St --
:37:00. > :37:05.wins a St Leger, they usually go on to be... It would be very, very
:37:05. > :37:11.nice for it to be done. Incidentally, this could nearly
:37:11. > :37:14.happen in America because we have the horse I Will Have Another who
:37:14. > :37:20.has won two and in a couple of weeks he might be going for the
:37:20. > :37:26.triple Crown. It happens in America more frequently than here.
:37:27. > :37:31.hasn't happened since Affirmed in America. They get closer, though.
:37:31. > :37:36.They've been - there have been a lot winning two. Does Camelot seem
:37:36. > :37:41.to you to have all the hallmarks? Is he a worthy odds-on favourite.
:37:41. > :37:46.Of course he is. We have had a few get beaten. He might not stay. But
:37:46. > :37:49.it's interesting. Let's look at the facts. As a two-year-old brilliant.
:37:49. > :37:55.He won over a mile, he became champion two-year-old. He was the
:37:55. > :38:02.best, highest rated two-year-old. There tough. He comes out and he
:38:02. > :38:06.doesn't have a race for the Guineas. He didn't get the best of rides in
:38:06. > :38:11.the Guineas and still won it. He got a lot to do. Ground was soft.
:38:11. > :38:16.He was asked to do a lot. That was a good performance to come from
:38:16. > :38:21.where he did to win the Guineas, that was a very good performance. I
:38:21. > :38:28.did watch him after the finish and after the finish he went further
:38:28. > :38:33.and further and further away. Couldn't pull him up. No. 2 hundred
:38:33. > :38:36.yards after the -- 200 yards after the winning post he was clear of
:38:36. > :38:41.the field, that told me tomorrow's mile and a half is not a problem.
:38:41. > :38:46.Let's put into context what a short price favourite he is and how odds-
:38:46. > :38:50.on favourites have done over the years. John is in the betting ring
:38:50. > :38:54.and a lot of everyday punters are not going to fancy backing him at
:38:54. > :38:58.the price he is. No, they're not and we look at the
:38:58. > :39:01.caption here, we have noticed over the years there's been - the four
:39:01. > :39:11.odds-on shots in the last few years that have run here, three of them
:39:11. > :39:23.
:39:23. > :39:26.Racing Post here with me. What a truffle track, very strange --
:39:26. > :39:30.wonderful track. Everyone ought to walk it because it's completely
:39:30. > :39:35.different. This hill up the back strait is much steeper than
:39:35. > :39:39.Cheltenham. The camber running from the top end to the bottom, up the
:39:39. > :39:45.strait, is much more severe than anywhere else on a flat track or
:39:45. > :39:49.jumping track. You don't get that. If a horse is to be racing flat up
:39:49. > :39:51.the strait they're going to roll down. Very hard test for any
:39:51. > :39:56.thoroughbred. Don't ever pretend it's going to be just a simple
:39:56. > :40:00.thing for Camelot to pass. You have been here for a few of these, were
:40:01. > :40:09.you here for 1953? With a little flag at Tattenham Corner. My
:40:09. > :40:12.memories are bathed in sunlight, I was actually in the mall at the
:40:12. > :40:16.corn Coronation on the Tuesday. It was sunshine here. The Queen came
:40:16. > :40:20.out on the track. You think she is waving at you. We waited and no
:40:20. > :40:23.commentary or anything and then the horses came flashing past. The
:40:23. > :40:29.Queen's colours were on the outside. That evening we thought she's bound
:40:29. > :40:33.to win it sometime and she still hasn't. Has it changed much here?
:40:33. > :40:36.Enormously and Britain's changed. Everything's changed. But what's
:40:36. > :40:41.interesting and it's a tribute to broadcasters amongst everything
:40:41. > :40:44.else, it's very alive still. This is a very alive scene. I was here
:40:44. > :40:49.times when it was beginning to die on its feet. The reason it stopped
:40:49. > :40:52.being on a Wednesday it was dying on its feet. I think it's very
:40:52. > :40:56.alive now. Race something alive, too. People should remember that.
:40:56. > :41:01.Going back to this year's race, we mentioned the odds-on shot. Camelot
:41:01. > :41:05.looks like he is going to go odds- on. What is your view on him?
:41:05. > :41:15.Smashing horse, hugely impressive in the Racing Post trophy. Won the
:41:15. > :41:17.
:41:17. > :41:21.Guineas, but he's been backed as if he had done what Sir Ivor or
:41:21. > :41:26.Nijinsky did. He just got home in the Guineas and so he may well win
:41:26. > :41:30.but he has to prove it to me. do you fancy then? A shot on
:41:31. > :41:34.Bonfire. If Bonfire wins we will need a big box of tissues for
:41:35. > :41:40.Claire, she won't stop crying. will do my best. The extraordinary
:41:40. > :41:43.thing is Bonfire and Camelot were reared in the same paddock at
:41:43. > :41:49.Highclere stud. This is the overview from the helicopter. Also
:41:49. > :41:56.there at the same time were Vow, Power, and Minimise Risk. If you
:41:56. > :41:59.zoom along the valley, that's Kingsclere and that's where Bonfire
:41:59. > :42:04.is trained and goes out on the gallops there, usually accompanied
:42:04. > :42:07.by somebody leading him because he can be difficult. He's caused a lot
:42:07. > :42:13.of thought for his trainer but these are the views of his jockey
:42:13. > :42:16.and what he is like on race day. I'd be worried if he was a horse
:42:16. > :42:24.that got to the start and he was shaking and worrying. He worries
:42:24. > :42:28.about nothing. He's as - he is just a monkey and that's - he is like a
:42:28. > :42:33.teenager. Wants to do the opposite of what you want. But as far as his
:42:33. > :42:39.temperament is concerned in a race he doesn't worry about anything.
:42:39. > :42:42.That's the main thing. And the spooky thing is that at the
:42:42. > :42:46.pub on the wishing well where they write the name of the horse they
:42:46. > :42:51.think will win the Derby they have written Bonfire and they've been
:42:51. > :42:55.right in eight of the last 13 years! Don't get excited, Claire.
:42:55. > :43:03.got to get excited now, my brother trains the second favourite for the
:43:03. > :43:08.Derby! You got to get excited about something. What you want it in, you
:43:08. > :43:11.want Bonfire written in stone. know. Only when it counts, written
:43:11. > :43:14.in chalk it doesn't count. Many women here have turned up looking
:43:14. > :43:20.as fine as they possibly can because there's a fabulous
:43:20. > :43:26.competition for Ladies Day and great prize to be won.
:43:26. > :43:29.Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the final of the What Best To Wear
:43:29. > :43:34.fashion competition. We have had photographers and stylists scouting
:43:34. > :43:38.the downs all day looking for the best-dressed. They had a shortlist
:43:38. > :43:43.of 20 and it's down to three. I would like to introduce you to
:43:43. > :43:46.three lovely ladies. On the right we have Susan Baxter from
:43:47. > :43:53.Manchester, who's decided to go mostly vintage today.
:43:53. > :44:00.In the middle Lisa Tan who lives in London, but is originally from
:44:00. > :44:04.Australia. And on the left we have Lea Bowman
:44:04. > :44:08.from Orange County in California. She's studying English at Oxford
:44:08. > :44:11.University. We are going to reveal the winner in a moment. First, I
:44:11. > :44:21.would like to introduce to you two of our judges for the competition
:44:21. > :44:21.
:44:21. > :44:26.today. Official jeweller of the Derby, TheO Fennell and official
:44:27. > :44:30.face, model and writer Laura Bailey. What were you looking for today?
:44:30. > :44:36.Elegant and chic and someone who stands out in a special way. Was it
:44:36. > :44:39.difficult? Difficult, but in a good way, spoilt for choice. Theo, not
:44:39. > :44:44.only are you a judge but you provided the first prize today, you
:44:44. > :44:52.designed a special necklace. Open the box. It has 60 diamonds. Tell
:44:52. > :44:58.us about it. It's 60 diamonds for each year of the Queen's Reign and
:44:58. > :45:04.at the back a horseshoe from the winners' enclosure here at Epsom. I
:45:04. > :45:07.am worried I thought thought I was the face of Investec! No. That's
:45:07. > :45:10.just what we told to you get you here. Fantastic prize. I do love
:45:10. > :45:14.the horseshoe at the back. Made from wood from this winners'
:45:14. > :45:24.enclosure. But it's time to announce the winner. I will let you
:45:24. > :45:31.
:45:31. > :45:36.stage and collect your prize and say a few words. Congratulations.
:45:36. > :45:44.I'm going to ask you about your outfit. What was the inspiration,
:45:44. > :45:48.what was the thought behind it? Sorry, what was the question?
:45:48. > :45:54.understand to being overwhelmed! Talk us through what was the
:45:54. > :45:56.inspiration behind your outfit. pieces I had in my wardrobe already,
:45:56. > :46:01.pieces I had in my wardrobe already, which was really lucky. I'm a
:46:01. > :46:04.milliner myself, so why had the hat. I wanted to wear the hat with
:46:04. > :46:07.something fun, and still really elegant. It all came together. I
:46:07. > :46:11.was going to wear something different last night but my
:46:11. > :46:16.boyfriend said I should go for the about it. I have to pay him banks
:46:16. > :46:26.as well for this. Con Vajdic relations. Ladies and gentlemen,
:46:26. > :46:32.
:46:32. > :46:36.can we have another round of Shirocco Star. Let's continue our
:46:36. > :46:40.Diamond Jubilee theme of the Queen and her passion for racing. Very
:46:40. > :46:50.much so. I and the question being, what is it like not just to ride
:46:50. > :46:50.
:46:50. > :47:00.for the Queen but to ride a winner for Her Majesty. Dick Hern trained
:47:00. > :47:04.her Classic winners. Dunfermline is the winner. I think probably the
:47:04. > :47:08.Queen winning in France with high clear was the best moment of her
:47:09. > :47:18.racing life of. She was a very good filly. We won the 1000 Guineas at
:47:19. > :47:19.
:47:19. > :47:24.Newmarket. She is the winner. decided to go to France. Sunday,
:47:24. > :47:33.16th June, 1974. The French gave Her Majesty such a welcome.
:47:33. > :47:38.Everything went to plan in the paddock. The filly duly obliged. It
:47:38. > :47:45.won most comfortably. Joe Mercer made it a day that the royal party
:47:45. > :47:49.will never forget. Her Majesty was over the moon. Over the course of
:47:49. > :47:53.the day she disappeared and we stayed behind and had a few bottles
:47:53. > :47:56.of champagne. Then we went to board our private aircraft, but the
:47:56. > :48:00.captain had a call on the radio to say that we were invited to have
:48:00. > :48:05.dinner with Her Majesty the Queen at Windsor Castle. There was a bit
:48:05. > :48:09.of a commotion, Dick said, I've got nothing to wear, I've been in these
:48:09. > :48:14.clothes since 6am! Then the message came, come as you are. We were
:48:14. > :48:17.picked up by the Royal cars, taken to Windsor Castle. We have the most
:48:17. > :48:27.wonderful dinner party with Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal
:48:27. > :48:31.
:48:31. > :48:40.Family. That was, for me, the most has ridden a Classic winner for the
:48:40. > :48:45.Queen, you did it here in The Oaks. Yes, 1977. Silver jubilee. A dream
:48:45. > :48:55.come true. Basically because, well, it was my first year with Major
:48:55. > :48:55.
:48:55. > :49:00.Dick Hern and Dunfermline. Here we are, Jubilee week, and we win the
:49:00. > :49:06.Epsom -- Epsom Oaks. It's basically a dream come true for all of us. I
:49:06. > :49:09.don't know how we did it but it happened. It says a lot for the
:49:09. > :49:14.Queen's respect for jockeys and her interest in jockeys that every year,
:49:14. > :49:18.whoever wins the Derby, the winning jockey goes up to the Royal Box
:49:18. > :49:22.because the Queen wants to talk to him or her, could be this year.
:49:22. > :49:27.for The Oaks as well. She's not here. She's got quite a busy
:49:27. > :49:32.weekend. Normally she could be here for The Oaks and we go up. She
:49:32. > :49:37.always likes... The winning connections are always presented to
:49:37. > :49:43.her in the Royal Box after the race. This time in an hour, we will know
:49:43. > :49:46.absolutely what has won the invest -- Investec Oaks this year. It
:49:46. > :49:51.could be one of Aidan O'Brien's five in the race. It could be
:49:52. > :50:01.anything, but we have a race to go before we get to The Oaks. Let's
:50:02. > :50:02.
:50:02. > :51:35.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 67 seconds
:51:35. > :51:42.take you through the runners and price, Highland Knight. Back in to
:51:42. > :51:48.7-1. Hayler night and Boogie Shoes are the horses for money. --
:51:48. > :51:51.Highland Knight. This is Boogie Shoes cantering down
:51:51. > :51:55.to the start in slow motion. You can see the length of the stride
:51:55. > :52:00.and how he covers the ground. A beautiful action he has got, and
:52:00. > :52:07.also the balance of the jockey on board. Boogie Shoes has a pretty
:52:07. > :52:13.decent chance of winning this. ran a second last time. This is the
:52:13. > :52:20.sort of race, it's a nice surprise, it's a nice race to win, but a lot
:52:20. > :52:24.of horses here today will be having a Hunt Cup in three weeks' time in
:52:24. > :52:30.the back up their minds. This will be a prep race for the Hunt Cup.
:52:30. > :52:35.But Boogie Shoes, quite a lot of the horses who run here today, at
:52:35. > :52:41.Newmarket last time. Obviously drawn in stall two, which is a very
:52:41. > :52:49.good draw. If you are drawn wide on the outside here, basically you
:52:49. > :52:52.cannot win. And he has one-third here at Epsom last year. Let's have
:52:52. > :52:59.a look at Highland Knight. There's been quite a lot of money for this
:52:59. > :53:03.horse. He's been back in from 14-1, now 13-2. Running in the second
:53:03. > :53:06.colours, the first colours are carried by Norse Blues. I suspect
:53:06. > :53:10.some of the money coming because Andrew Balding has already had a
:53:10. > :53:13.winner this afternoon. You should know all about the money! He's
:53:13. > :53:18.definitely got a good each-way chance. I think people have seen
:53:18. > :53:23.that at 14-1 and thought they will have a bit of that. The owner
:53:23. > :53:26.thinks Norse Blues might be his best chance. That is true in terms
:53:26. > :53:30.of the colours. They are drawn next to one another. They'll be easy
:53:30. > :53:40.enough to watch. On Highland Knight, in terms of the family, he finished
:53:40. > :53:45.second in this race last year. The family thing, Passing Glance has
:53:45. > :53:49.won, Side Glance today, maybe Highland Knight can make up for
:53:49. > :53:59.finishing second to Dance And Dance in this last year and winner today.
:53:59. > :54:04.
:54:04. > :54:09.Moon's my name, Jim Crowley riding riding now for his boss.
:54:09. > :54:14.trainer wants a good clip in this race, he wants him to go far.
:54:14. > :54:19.Blues won the Lincoln consolation race. Big shock, he was about 50-1.
:54:19. > :54:23.Yes. He is a horse, I would say he's got to run quite a big race
:54:23. > :54:28.here. You can see that cross noseband on there, just to keep his
:54:28. > :54:38.mouth closed. It gives the jockey a better chance with the bit in his
:54:38. > :54:47.
:54:47. > :54:52.John Gosden. His horses are in really good form. This horse,
:54:52. > :54:57.obviously he has drawn 12. It gives them a lot to do. He tends to start
:54:57. > :55:02.very slowly in his races. He is a horse that comes from behind. Here
:55:02. > :55:12.at Epsom, sometimes it's not an easy thing to do. It looks like
:55:12. > :55:12.
:55:12. > :55:22.Frankie will be one of the last weekend she has. She is looking
:55:22. > :55:30.
:55:30. > :55:40.forward to the Derby tomorrow. They Red cap. Boogie Shoes on the inside.
:55:40. > :55:45.
:55:45. > :55:53.Dunn'o has gone up into a prominent is right in the centre field. They
:55:53. > :56:03.are followed next by Forceful Appeal. Followed then by Capaill
:56:03. > :56:32.
:56:32. > :56:42.there and dropped back very sharply. Sticking to the inside, Diere Na
:56:42. > :56:45.
:56:45. > :56:53.Sli. Mawaakef is now looming large on the outside. They race up with
:56:53. > :56:59.100 yards left to go. Highland night in front with Mawaakef. He is
:57:00. > :57:05.just going to get there. Moquette was second. Unex El Greco finished
:57:05. > :57:11.fast with Diere Na Sli. They are followed by Norse Blues and
:57:11. > :57:17.Starwatch behind them. Further back in the field is Forceful Appeal for
:57:17. > :57:21.AGB. Behind them is Prince Jock, Moone's My Name, one of the last is
:57:21. > :57:31.Dunn'o in company with Axiom. The winner is number five, Highland
:57:31. > :57:36.
:57:36. > :57:41.Knight. 844 Andrew Balding. Ridden too. Unex El Greco has finished
:57:42. > :57:51.right down the outside. It makes it interesting their with Diere Na Sli.
:57:52. > :57:59.
:57:59. > :58:09.lengths there. Very tight here. But on the near side you'd favour Unex
:58:09. > :58:14.
:58:14. > :58:19.El Greco. Then follows in fifth, we see Norse Blues. 6th is * water. --
:58:19. > :58:27.Starwatch. Number 13 his Forceful Appeal. Then Prince Jock and Kay
:58:27. > :58:35.Gee Be. They are finishing at long intervals. A really good
:58:35. > :58:39.performance from Highland Knight. As Claire was saying beforehand,
:58:39. > :58:47.certainly has the bloodlines to make an impression here at Epsom
:58:47. > :58:50.today. Jeff Smith with two winners in the race. The Red cap it
:58:50. > :59:00.probably made you think it was the second choice, but they were both
:59:00. > :59:05.
:59:06. > :59:12.going on tour Hyland night, you would now have 42.50 pence in your
:59:12. > :59:17.hand. There is Jeff at Smith, the winning owner. How much did you
:59:17. > :59:23.get? I didn't have a penny on it. A brilliant ride from David Probert,
:59:23. > :59:26.who is one of the most improved jockeys. He gets rides for other
:59:26. > :59:32.trainers but not many high-class horses. I thought he did
:59:32. > :59:35.brilliantly there. You were sitting, he's going too fast. He wasn't!
:59:35. > :59:40.turned out that way. But at the time, the way he had that whole
:59:40. > :59:44.field strung out like that, I thought, how can he keep going?
:59:44. > :59:51.he gave the horse a breather coming down the hill. The horse that ran
:59:51. > :59:56.second was always up there. He had a very good draw. The two of them...
:59:56. > :00:03.Nothing came from behind. You were saying to me, something is going to
:00:03. > :00:08.come and colour them up. Something happened, we didn't actually see.
:00:08. > :00:12.He that might have helped. Look how the field is stretched out. It's
:00:12. > :00:20.not very often you see them that far apart from the leader in a mile
:00:20. > :00:25.race like that. They have gone a searching gallop. The horse in the
:00:25. > :00:30.red with the white cap is saying he's had enough of. Your horse,
:00:30. > :00:36.he's kept going, David has kept him sticking to the right hand. Really
:00:36. > :00:41.gutsy here. Hanging on to the rail. Mawaakef comes to challenge and
:00:41. > :00:47.Highland Knight just keeps pulling out a bit more. He was second last
:00:47. > :00:51.year in this race to Dance And Dance, Highland Knight. Good old
:00:51. > :00:56.hyaline night, really toughs it out in the closing stages. David
:00:56. > :01:03.Probert really keeps him moving forward. He always just shades
:01:03. > :01:09.Mawaakef. Mawaakef ran a great race. He ran at Newmarket last time and
:01:09. > :01:15.was in amongst some of these other horses, way behind on the day. His
:01:15. > :01:19.draw helped him, of course. mentioned to Freddie Tyler Key, who
:01:19. > :01:29.was riding Mawaakef, a good example of another young jockey who has
:01:29. > :01:36.
:01:36. > :01:43.stepped up from the apprentice coming through. There, we had
:01:44. > :01:48.horses going a very fast gallop and were not being caught. The last
:01:48. > :01:52.race, it was the opposite. So we don't know where we are at. Let's
:01:52. > :01:55.hear from the winning jockey. First of all, a good performance
:01:55. > :02:04.from your horse this afternoon. Last time, he was disappointing.
:02:04. > :02:09.Was that down to the ground? Yes, it was soft at Newbury. He likes to
:02:09. > :02:15.jump out and enjoy himself. He has done it well today. He's knuckled
:02:15. > :02:19.down. It's a good atmosphere out there, isn't it? There is.
:02:19. > :02:24.Especially the last two furlongs, you know, you get a right buzz.
:02:24. > :02:30.It's a great day. Well done. I will grab a word with the trainer,
:02:30. > :02:36.Andrew Balding. I think two interviews ago you were bemoaning
:02:36. > :02:41.your luck today. What do you know?! Nothing. The three of them worked
:02:41. > :02:46.together ten days ago and she was giving them all both Side Glance
:02:46. > :02:51.and him weight. She finished half a length up. You would have thought
:02:51. > :02:54.she was the obvious one. It can be misleading. The ground at Newbury
:02:54. > :02:58.last time would have been against him, and he enjoyed conditions
:02:58. > :03:02.today? I think he is better on a turning track as well. That is a
:03:02. > :03:06.factor. This was always, after he got beat at Newbury, this was the
:03:06. > :03:12.aim to come here. Delighted. His dam was second in the race. He was
:03:12. > :03:16.second in it last year. He is all heart. Well done, so far. Hopefully,
:03:16. > :03:25.there is more coming your way. hope so. Thanks.
:03:25. > :03:30.In the Hunt Cup, Highland Knight has 8 stone 11 but having won today
:03:30. > :03:35.he will pick up a five-pound penalty. That will take his weight
:03:35. > :03:43.to 9 stone 2. Highland Knight, a good, strong, resolute gap lopper.
:03:43. > :03:51.He has done it in good style today. -- galloper. He has done it in good
:03:51. > :03:57.tile today. Coming down Tattenham Hill there was a bit of an incident
:03:57. > :04:01.here. We will have a look and see if we can see. I thought it was
:04:01. > :04:05.Capaill Liath at the time. Let's look as they run down the Tattenham
:04:05. > :04:09.Hill. Capaill Liath taking a false step there and dropping back very
:04:09. > :04:18.sharply. That was the grey horseback in eighth or ninth
:04:18. > :04:23.position. And just a heart-stopping moment there for the rider, Amy
:04:23. > :04:33.Ryan. They were charging down there. There's the winner. Let's check the
:04:33. > :04:38.full details on this Investec Mile. Highland Knight wins at 13-2, going
:04:39. > :04:47.one better than last year. If you do fancy Highland Knight for the
:04:47. > :04:52.Royal Hunt Cup, he is 33s into 16s now, Highland Knight. Look who I
:04:52. > :04:58.have found, four fabulous ladies. This is Nicky, Alex and they have
:04:58. > :05:03.brought their mums here. Why do you love Epsom so much? I love coming
:05:03. > :05:08.here to see the people and the horses and the atmosphere. It is
:05:08. > :05:17.fantastic. Friday is the best day, better than Derby Day. You have
:05:17. > :05:27.picked a good spot. I don't know much about the horses. I looked at
:05:27. > :05:27.
:05:27. > :05:31.one and it looked very good. What are you going for in the Oaks?
:05:31. > :05:35.haven't decided! You can get help off Jane. It is Jane's first time
:05:35. > :05:40.here. You have had a winner in every race that you have had a bet
:05:40. > :05:48.on? Yes. Where is your inspiration? What are you doing so right? I just
:05:48. > :05:51.look at the form. LAUGHTER You are doing it the clever way. You have
:05:52. > :05:56.been watching the women parade, haven't you? Yes, it is good to
:05:56. > :06:06.watch the fashions. Very good. You have been the most successful lady
:06:06. > :06:06.
:06:06. > :06:14.on the table. So we need your tip for the Oaks. 5 Kailani. That is
:06:14. > :06:21.the one to go for. Thank you. Jeff Smith and his wife up on stage
:06:21. > :06:29.receiving the trophy for the Investec Mile Handicap. Jeff will
:06:29. > :06:34.be pleased because he is a home- bred horse. Be careful with the
:06:34. > :06:39.crystal! He is. So we move on now to the big one, the classic, the
:06:39. > :06:46.Investec Oaks. It is due off at 4.05pm. You can see the fillies are
:06:46. > :06:56.already in the paddock. There are 12 of them now. Toptempo and Kissed
:06:56. > :06:57.
:06:57. > :07:01.are non-runners. At the head of the betting we see The Fugue. Vow bids
:07:01. > :07:06.to continue an extraordinary record for William Haggas. He's only had
:07:06. > :07:14.two runners in Epsom classics. He has a 100% record. The other link
:07:15. > :07:24.is that his wife, who is the daughter of Lester Piggot, rode
:07:25. > :07:27.
:07:27. > :07:37.Dancing Rain. So we went behind- the-scenes - it's called At Home
:07:37. > :07:47.
:07:47. > :07:57.With The Haggases we will call it! That wasn't very graceful. And on
:07:57. > :07:58.
:07:59. > :08:08.the television! # All went down in Massachusetts! #
:08:09. > :08:09.
:08:09. > :08:18.William? Erm... What's William like? I realised I was singing!
:08:18. > :08:26.William is a great character. He is a Yorkshireman, a great cricketer.
:08:26. > :08:30.Phenomenal commitment to the job. Patience is a huge attribute. And
:08:30. > :08:36.also he doesn't waste runs, you know. He thinks very carefully
:08:36. > :08:42.about where the horses will run. Team Haggas, husband and wife are
:08:42. > :08:46.as good a time as you could possibly get in the industry.
:08:46. > :08:51.Horses is a way of life, not a job. We don't have a job. We work all
:08:51. > :08:57.day and some of the night as well. And Maureen's as heavily involved
:08:57. > :09:03.as I am. It's just our life. I can't think of doing anything else,
:09:03. > :09:09.thank God. A trainer for 25 years, Haggas's greatest moment came in
:09:09. > :09:13.1996 when he won the Derby. He was a very good horse. He would have
:09:13. > :09:18.been an even better horse if I had trained him now. When I think back,
:09:18. > :09:22.I think how talented he must have been. That was a golden time
:09:22. > :09:29.because we couldn't believe our luck, really. There was more
:09:29. > :09:34.classic success last year, this time in the Oaks with Dancing Rain.
:09:34. > :09:41.COMMENTARY: Dancing Rain is finding a bit more. Dancing Rain is going
:09:41. > :09:48.to get up! Dancing Rain wins the Oaks. What a ride by Johnny Murtagh.
:09:48. > :09:53.He got a fantastic ride from the front. A world-class ride. Actually,
:09:53. > :10:03.subsequently proved to be every bit as good as that. Haggas has teamed
:10:03. > :10:05.
:10:05. > :10:11.up with Johnny Murtagh again for this year's Oaks. Every time he
:10:11. > :10:16.tried to give her a Polo, she went to bite him. I said, "If you don't
:10:16. > :10:22.like her, sell her." He said, "She's no good, I can feel it." A
:10:22. > :10:26.top breeder of course! He said, "I think we ought to sell this filly."
:10:26. > :10:31.Harry kindly sent her to us. She's come back via a strange route.
:10:31. > :10:36.Thank God, I don't know how I would feel if she was doing this for
:10:36. > :10:44.someone else. She is not very keen on vets. Or anyone fiddling with
:10:44. > :10:48.her. She's pretty good, really. For - she is bossy and she is tough and
:10:48. > :10:55.she likes her own way. She's pretty straightforward, yeah. She's a
:10:55. > :11:00.beautiful mover. She's always just - she is always well-balanced and
:11:00. > :11:07.she's always felt nice. She is going the right way this filly.
:11:07. > :11:12.She's good mentally. Doing well physically and stays well and tries.
:11:12. > :11:19.Fairly good ingredients. And right behind me is William Haggas with
:11:19. > :11:24.his team of owners for Vow. He doesn't know we have seen him
:11:24. > :11:30.singing away on his hack! He might not be best pleased. There is Vow.
:11:30. > :11:33.She has a big chance in this race. You could argue it's a very open
:11:33. > :11:37.race and with Johnny Murtagh on board, she has the man who knows
:11:37. > :11:42.how to do it. It will be very interesting to see how this race
:11:42. > :11:50.pans out. Whether a couple of the Aidan O'Brien runners go off in
:11:50. > :11:56.front. Where will the placed horses come from? Will they be steaming
:11:56. > :12:00.later as we have seen? Let's check the full field. There are two non-
:12:00. > :12:07.runners in it now. 12 left in the Investec Oaks. The
:12:07. > :12:13.first of our classics here on the Downs this weekend. 1 is
:12:13. > :12:20.Betterbetterbetter. Three of these filly's sisters have been placed in
:12:20. > :12:28.the Oaks. 2 is Colima, trained by Raef
:12:28. > :12:35.Beckett. 3 is Coquet who won the listed race
:12:35. > :12:44.at Goodwood eight days ago. She is going the right way.
:12:44. > :12:51.4 is Devotion. One of the outsiders. She is ridden by Richard Hughes.
:12:51. > :12:54.Down to 5, that is Kailani. Godolphin's runner in the race.
:12:54. > :12:59.Mickael Barzalona, forever remembered for his dramatic Derby
:12:59. > :13:08.win last year. 7 is Maybe. She was unbeaten until
:13:08. > :13:15.she finished third in the 1000 Guineas last time.
:13:15. > :13:24.8 is Nayarra, ridden by Martin Dwyer.
:13:24. > :13:34.9 is Shirocco Star, well-bred filly from the family of Stagecraft.
:13:34. > :13:34.
:13:34. > :13:39.10, The Fugue, who was a very good fourth in the 1000 Guineas at
:13:39. > :13:48.Newmarket. Over to 12, the non-runners are
:13:48. > :13:52.Kissed and Toptempo. Twirl was second to The Fugue. 13 is Vow, the
:13:52. > :14:01.unbeaten filly trained by William Haggas. Johnny Murtagh, who knows
:14:01. > :14:08.this course so well. Finally, 14 is Was. Won a maiden at
:14:08. > :14:11.the Curragh. 12 runners. Down here in the paddock, it is
:14:11. > :14:15.pretty busy. With Aidan O'Brien training five of the runners, there
:14:15. > :14:25.is a bit more room to move around. The biggest group of owners are
:14:25. > :14:25.
:14:25. > :14:32.here. This is the team that own Vow and also have Bonfire in tomorrow's
:14:32. > :14:37.Derby. Let's have a quick word with Harry. Everybody excited? Really
:14:37. > :14:40.excited. Firing barrel one it is the Oaks! We have had a great
:14:40. > :14:45.build-up. Everyone was here good and early. It is the greatest
:14:45. > :14:51.thrill to have a filly running in this race. She looks fantastic.
:14:51. > :15:01.are having a look at her there. She is very relaxed. Among your team of
:15:01. > :15:02.
:15:02. > :15:08.20, we have Madeleine Lloyd Webber's mother. She is wearing two
:15:08. > :15:18.badges. I am pleased to say that Vow's badge has gone on top of The
:15:18. > :15:22.
:15:22. > :15:30.Fugue! She's wearing the pale blue. O'Brien has been saddling his
:15:30. > :15:35.runners. Here is Twirl. Who actually finished second to Vow and
:15:35. > :15:42.her last start. Getting a little bit wound-up. You can see her veins
:15:42. > :15:48.popping out, because it is such a warm, close day. If we wander over
:15:48. > :15:58.here, Sheikh Mohammed has stumped up the cash, as it were, to
:15:58. > :16:04.
:16:04. > :16:09.supplement Kailani. Barzalona takes this filly today. But she has
:16:09. > :16:14.certainly got the class. There is a real buzz around here because
:16:14. > :16:19.everybody is so excited. The classics are the races that matter.
:16:20. > :16:23.You only get the one shop, and that is what makes it exciting. This is
:16:23. > :16:28.interesting because on the left we have Andrew Lloyd Webber, his wife
:16:28. > :16:32.having a conversation with John Magna, Rachel Hood is the wife of
:16:32. > :16:38.the trainer, John Gosden. Lord Lloyd-Webber with his first real
:16:38. > :16:43.chance of winning The Oaks, courtesy of The Fugue. She is off
:16:43. > :16:49.favourite at the moment. Madeleine is hugely excited as well, because
:16:49. > :16:52.she bred this filly and has done so well at the stud. Those of the
:16:52. > :16:57.human faces that are building up towards this race. What about the
:16:57. > :17:02.horses themselves? We are having a close look at the fillies in the
:17:02. > :17:06.paddock. As you'd expect for a race of this quality, many good-looking
:17:06. > :17:15.ones. This is Betterbetterbetter. She's coming from a family that has
:17:15. > :17:23.done well in this race. Yes, look at the range. She has the ringgit,
:17:23. > :17:28.which is quite a severe bit with a vulcanised snowfall. She is a filly,
:17:28. > :17:34.she looks as though she will cover a lot of ground when she gallops.
:17:34. > :17:44.Horse number five is Kailani. Her mum won The Oaks. For Frankie
:17:44. > :17:51.
:17:51. > :17:57.Number seven, Maybe. Have a look at her tongue. You were chatting about
:17:57. > :18:02.that. I said, but Tongue is over that it, he said, don't worry. She
:18:02. > :18:08.does that a lot. There's a question about whether she will stay the
:18:08. > :18:11.trip - what do you think? decides what side -- it depends
:18:11. > :18:17.what side of the pedigree you look at. She is related to so many
:18:17. > :18:24.horses. Her grandmother bread last year's winner of The Oaks. Her
:18:24. > :18:29.great grandmother read Dr devious. You would have to think that this
:18:29. > :18:35.filly is going to stay a mile and a half. She has got the class. She
:18:35. > :18:40.only ran once this year. She has finished third in a classic. You
:18:40. > :18:45.would have to think that she is the one that most of them have to beat.
:18:45. > :18:50.The 12 jockeys have entered the paddock. Joseph O'Brien, he is a
:18:50. > :18:55.jockey who could have an excellent weekend here. Richard Hughes writes
:18:55. > :19:01.one of the outsiders in this race, Devotion, a filly that I think
:19:02. > :19:07.might one about her prize. A horse that we really like the look of was
:19:07. > :19:13.number 13, Vow, who is unbeaten and represents the had his team.
:19:13. > :19:20.ran across the track a bit at Lingfield, but she looks lovely.
:19:20. > :19:24.She is not as rangy as some of the other fillies, but she is a very
:19:24. > :19:31.likeable filly. You were talking about Joseph it. He could win the
:19:31. > :19:34.Triple Crown. Three big races. is the hardest race for him. If he
:19:34. > :19:38.gets this one under his belt, he is nearly there. This is the most
:19:38. > :19:45.competitive of the top races this weekend. There are three fillies in
:19:45. > :19:50.this race that you would have to say are very competitive. We
:19:50. > :19:54.haven't seen Garston's filly yet. There she is there. This is the
:19:54. > :20:01.first chance we've had to see her in the flesh to date. She picked up
:20:01. > :20:08.a Nick after her run at Newmarket. She came back out and she ran in
:20:08. > :20:15.the Guineas. A fantastic run. Finished behind Maybe. She finished
:20:15. > :20:25.fourth. Went on to York. She won that very well. Let's get an update
:20:25. > :20:48.
:20:48. > :20:56.bookmakers, 30,000, a 3-1 for Maybe up. 10,000 each-way at 25-1,
:20:56. > :21:01.Was. The Fugue now a joint favourite.
:21:01. > :21:05.Back in the foreground, in the bright blue, that is Madeleine's
:21:05. > :21:08.mother. They are living in a fractured family, because they were
:21:08. > :21:12.in opposite ends of the restaurant before and have not been talking to
:21:12. > :21:18.each other in the paddock but have clearly made it up now. Another man
:21:18. > :21:23.with family interest in this is Hughie Morrison. Culprit is co-
:21:23. > :21:28.owned by your mother and aunt. pressure is on. They are quite
:21:28. > :21:32.realistic, they are pleased to be here - I think! I thought she might
:21:32. > :21:36.have a chance each way. You don't know when you run a horse,
:21:36. > :21:42.especially a filly a week before, if they're going to improve. She
:21:42. > :21:50.needs to improve another 10 macro like she does in every other race.
:21:50. > :21:59.She is top. You've also got Shirocco Star. Is this the first
:21:59. > :22:09.time you've had two runners in the classic? No, last year... It's the
:22:09. > :22:09.
:22:09. > :22:16.first time in The Oaks. It looks an open race. Yes. There is good form.
:22:16. > :22:26.There's a lot who've got form, The Fugue, Maybe, Vow. Then there are
:22:26. > :22:28.

:22:57. > :23:02.struggling to cope with the tension. Every Philippe except one is
:23:02. > :23:06.handling these preliminaries fantastic. Horse number nine.
:23:06. > :23:10.Shirocco Star. She is jogging around the paddock, getting warm.
:23:10. > :23:13.She's got fed up of walking around the paddock, she just wants to get
:23:13. > :23:17.on with it. She's not doing anything wrong, but she is a
:23:17. > :23:23.filly... When you say she's not doing anything wrong seriously, if
:23:23. > :23:31.you have backed her bat you'd be wishing her to get on with it. But
:23:31. > :23:35.she's still got to parade round here. Race ulcers - not resources
:23:35. > :23:42.of high octane fuel inside. If you are looking for a negative, it's a
:23:42. > :23:47.negative. But come on! She's a race horse! What horse is impressing you
:23:47. > :23:55.at the moment? Quite a lot have impressed me. As a breeder, you'd
:23:55. > :24:04.like to take them all home. You are right. They have this belief. She
:24:04. > :24:09.is lovely. -- the Haggas filly. She is not too long in the back. She is
:24:09. > :24:15.a lovely animal to breed horses from. There are a lot of fillies in
:24:15. > :24:19.this race this year that are very tall and lanky. You would imagine
:24:19. > :24:28.with long it strides. Is that the right thing for Epsom? What do you
:24:28. > :24:36.think? I don't know, sometimes it isn't. Maybe is a big filly,
:24:36. > :24:46.Kailani is a very big filly. Betterbetterbetter is a big,
:24:46. > :24:50.striding filly. The horse at the bottom, number 14, Was. It is a big,
:24:50. > :24:57.tall Ofili. Lovely Walker. Uses herself. But I would have loved to
:24:57. > :25:01.have been the breeder of her. She cost 1.2 million. All about the
:25:01. > :25:04.money. Let's go and find out who Clare has got with her.
:25:04. > :25:08.I have a man who can probably say that among his great achievements
:25:08. > :25:14.in life, not just as he played for England and captained England
:25:14. > :25:19.football, he has won many races over the world and has now won a
:25:19. > :25:24.Classic. Congratulations on winning the Guineas. Yes, it's nice to win
:25:24. > :25:28.one. It's been a long time coming. People will say it's got the monkey
:25:28. > :25:33.off my back. I'm very pleased for everyone. Not just me. It's not
:25:33. > :25:38.just about me, it's about the whole team. It's the same in any sport.
:25:38. > :25:48.I'm obviously very pleased and proud. Mick Shamin is the name on
:25:48. > :25:49.
:25:49. > :25:53.the board. What chance of a Nayarra? There's no chance in that
:25:53. > :25:59.case. We've never been frightened to have a go. This filly has got
:25:59. > :26:04.some form. I'm sure she will get the trip. It was a total mess at
:26:04. > :26:13.Goodwood the other week. I begged them to let me run it, which they
:26:13. > :26:17.have done. Betfair are all flying on now. She's got a great attitude.
:26:17. > :26:26.She's a real professional. She will handle the track. I think she will
:26:26. > :26:32.get the trip. I think there's a very false price. It will be
:26:32. > :26:42.interesting to see. I think she is a good filly. We will let you get
:26:42. > :26:50.
:26:50. > :26:54.into the grandstand and get a good order and leading the parade is
:26:54. > :26:57.Shirocco Star. She's been a bit fractious in the paddock and they
:26:57. > :27:03.must have asked for permission to do this. She clearly is quite
:27:03. > :27:13.highly-strung. Darryl Holland getting his sixth the ride in the
:27:13. > :27:29.
:27:29. > :27:35.who was pipped close home in the Cheshire Oaks last time. She's a
:27:35. > :27:43.half-sister to three fillies that have been placed in this race.
:27:43. > :27:48.we have Colima. Jim Crowley is quoted as saying he thinks he will
:27:48. > :27:56.turn the tables on the winner. Number three is Coquet. Robert
:27:56. > :28:01.Havlin having his first ride their for Hughie Morrison. We can see
:28:01. > :28:07.here Devotion. You wonder is it in here to set the pace up for some of
:28:07. > :28:13.these others. You never know. Kailani I suspect will be ridden
:28:13. > :28:19.with more restraint by Barzalona. She is unbeaten in two starts. She
:28:19. > :28:25.was supplemented for this and she won the pretty Polly on soft ground.
:28:25. > :28:32.Then we have Maybe. This horse, I was really impressed. I saw this
:28:32. > :28:40.horse going and loved her. question with her - will she stay?
:28:40. > :28:50.Then we have Nayarra. There wasn't a single person who would begrudge
:28:50. > :28:50.
:28:50. > :29:00.Shannon that win last weekend. we have The Fugue coming through. A
:29:00. > :29:02.
:29:02. > :29:06.very worthy favourite. This is Twirl. Pat Smullen is Aidan
:29:06. > :29:11.O'Brien's relation. They are countering -- cantering almost
:29:11. > :29:17.immediately. The ones at the back, almost as soon as they come out
:29:17. > :29:23.onto the course, they are into a canter. They are out very quickly.
:29:23. > :29:31.Everyone is giving big thumbs up to Was in the paddock. A bit and
:29:31. > :29:36.exposed, only had a couple of runs on smallish tracks. It merits
:29:36. > :29:42.respect. William Haggis, who is in such good form, a really jovial
:29:42. > :29:47.character. Saying, well, I'm going to try and be to your five with my
:29:47. > :29:57.one. How have you got a 100 % record in Epsom Classics, because
:29:57. > :30:19.
:30:19. > :30:25.having a good look at the runners. The horses that you really liked,
:30:25. > :30:29.or one that you particularly liked? I do like Maybe. She has a pedigree,
:30:29. > :30:36.absolutely made for Epsom. She was sweating in the loins right from
:30:36. > :30:42.the word go. But she never got any different from that. She was
:30:42. > :30:49.saddled up. She never lifted her legs up. Of course, the Haggas
:30:49. > :30:53.filly... 13, Vow? She was absolutely beautiful to look at.
:30:53. > :30:59.Lovely mare, strong, very well behaved. Maybe and Vow two
:30:59. > :31:03.positives. One horse that we thought, or I led you into
:31:03. > :31:10.thinking... You press people always want to be looking for the
:31:10. > :31:14.negatives! You found one. negative was? Shirocco Star. She
:31:14. > :31:24.got fed up of walking round here. Just wanted to get on with it.
:31:24. > :31:24.
:31:24. > :31:27.Hopefully, she will get to the start in good piece. Thank you.
:31:27. > :31:34.Three local ladies are having trouble picking a horse. Who are
:31:34. > :31:39.you going to go for? We are going to go for Maybe. Why? Well, I think
:31:39. > :31:45.last time we bet on a good race and we bought a bottle of champagne to
:31:45. > :31:55.support. You have had a winner. Not long to go to put your bet on so
:31:55. > :32:01.
:32:01. > :32:11.you better go. Good luck! The Fugue 11-4 favourite, 3-1 for
:32:11. > :32:17.
:32:17. > :32:22.favouritism. So they canter to the start. There
:32:22. > :32:27.is the favourite, 10 The Fugue, William Buick. She is nicely
:32:27. > :32:32.settled, nicely relaxed. Shirocco Star, who the lads were talking
:32:32. > :32:37.about earlier, she was some way ahead of them and still seemed to
:32:37. > :32:45.be a little on edge. The whole occasion has got to her. Look at
:32:45. > :32:49.The Fugue. Beautifully relaxed. That is Nayarra on the near side.
:32:49. > :32:59.Martin Dwyer has won this race before. William Buick no stranger
:32:59. > :32:59.
:32:59. > :33:08.to classic success. There is a nice slow-shot, super-slow-mo of 7,
:33:08. > :33:18.Maybe. Joseph O'Brien in the saddle. I don't think she ran her race at
:33:18. > :33:24.Newmarket, the ground came against her. That's them as they pass the
:33:24. > :33:33.stand. Look at Joseph. Joseph O'Brien, 19 years of age, he is a
:33:33. > :33:37.tall lad. Look at those legs! Just in a relaxed mode as they make
:33:37. > :33:43.their way down the last two furlongs before they reach the
:33:43. > :33:49.start, or the stalls for the start of the Investec Oaks.
:33:49. > :33:54.He is Joseph, not just a very fine jockey, but a very fine horseman,
:33:54. > :33:59.and you could see it there with his feet kicked out of the irons. Mick,
:33:59. > :34:04.you spent some time with him. How much did he impress you with his
:34:04. > :34:08.attitude? I was really, really impressed. I expecting to see a
:34:08. > :34:18.young lad, OK self-assured in the saddle, but out of it he is mature
:34:18. > :34:20.
:34:20. > :34:24.beyond his years. He is 19 going on 29. He has already won the 2000
:34:24. > :34:27.Guineas this year. She has been causing a fair bit of trouble,
:34:27. > :34:32.Shirocco Star. She is still very buzzed-up with Darryl Holland.
:34:32. > :34:42.Proving quite a handful and that is clearly somebody from the yard that
:34:42. > :34:44.
:34:44. > :34:50.has been sent down there to meet her. Clare, she's been like this
:34:50. > :34:59.all her life. This is not - it's a long time for this - to be in the
:34:59. > :35:05.paddock and before the start. She's always been a tricky filly. Is this
:35:05. > :35:12.-- this is why this is the ultimate test of the racehorse. Absolutely.
:35:12. > :35:16.This is the test. When you go to post, when you are on a favourite,
:35:16. > :35:20.all the public are shouting at you. As soon as you get near them, they
:35:20. > :35:26.start shouting your name, or they shout the horse's name. It is, as
:35:26. > :35:30.you say, it's the ultimate test. used to be worse? Oh yes. When you
:35:30. > :35:37.went down the start, you have to go through the fairground? You had to
:35:37. > :35:41.go through the gypsy camp. You had ponies tethered next to the fence.
:35:41. > :35:49.You didn't really want that. The gypsy kids playing football.
:35:49. > :35:57.Sometimes the horses had to do a Mick Channon! John Gosden there in
:35:57. > :36:02.shot, the trainer of The Fugue. Bred by Madeleine Lloyd Webber,
:36:02. > :36:06.owned by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Winner at York in impressive style.
:36:06. > :36:11.If she were to reproduce that sort of length of stride and that
:36:11. > :36:16.beautiful balance and that way of running here, she will most
:36:16. > :36:21.definitely be there in terms of the finish. She has a huge chance. What
:36:21. > :36:27.a beautiful filly she is. Lovely. The amazing thing was she ran such
:36:27. > :36:35.a good race in the Guineas. Here is another key piece of past form.
:36:35. > :36:39.This is Vow winning the Lingfield Oaks Trial and beating Colima. Some
:36:39. > :36:45.people worrying that she did hang a bit to her right? When she got to
:36:45. > :36:53.the front, he tapped her and she ran all over. She's only had two
:36:53. > :36:57.races. And she's - she ran green there. The horses at Lingfield on
:36:57. > :37:04.that all-weather, they have a tendency to do that. What was the
:37:04. > :37:13.thing you thought in the paddock, Mick, about the whole look? The one
:37:13. > :37:17.that hit me was The Fugue, she looked amazing. I know Clare was
:37:17. > :37:21.not as impressed with Maybe. There is still a fair amount of
:37:21. > :37:26.confidence in Maybe. She is there as second favourite. The Fugue
:37:26. > :37:31.looks like she will go off favourite. What hit me is how tall
:37:31. > :37:36.most of these fillies were. There was a lot of them and the only
:37:36. > :37:40.compact filly was the Dunlop filly and, of course, William Haggas, who
:37:40. > :37:46.I would have said was the pick of the paddock, the most beautiful-
:37:46. > :37:55.looking racehorse. She was the strongest, the deepest and she just
:37:55. > :38:05.looked amazing. FANFARE Vow with the protective rug on to help her
:38:05. > :38:14.go into the stalls. She has a good partner on board in Johnny Murtagh.
:38:14. > :38:18.What a record he has in classics. He can ride a race from anywhere.
:38:18. > :38:23.He just understands the course. Just a quick thought on Aidan
:38:23. > :38:29.O'Brien having five runners in the race. Is that a sign of strength or
:38:29. > :38:35.weakness? Weakness, possibly. good question! I would say strength.
:38:35. > :38:38.OK. Differing views here, Jim. There is the great man.
:38:38. > :38:43.Joseph O'Brien, a heavy responsibility resting on young
:38:43. > :38:48.shoulders. 19 years of age. Set to go. The Investec Oaks - they are
:38:48. > :38:53.off! In the centre, Nayarra, Betterbetterbetter is up there as
:38:53. > :38:56.well, going up on the inside, too, into a prominent position is Was
:38:56. > :39:04.and Vow is showing out of the centre as they settle into stride.
:39:04. > :39:14.They are followed by The Fugue who is back in the field, then Shirocco
:39:14. > :39:15.
:39:15. > :39:24.Star and Colima. The front rank as they head uphill now is Nayarra
:39:24. > :39:28.from, in second place, Twirl, Was, Vow on the inside, half a length to
:39:28. > :39:34.Shirocco Star, Colima on the inside, The Fugue is right in the centre,
:39:34. > :39:38.followed by Coquet and Maybe and to the rear of the field is Kailani.
:39:38. > :39:43.Just a bit of buffeting back there. Mickael Barzalona getting a buffet
:39:43. > :39:46.in the centre between the two Ballydoyle runners, Devotion and
:39:46. > :39:53.Maybe. They race up now to the highest point of the course and the
:39:53. > :40:00.leader is Nayarra by a length-and- a-half to Twirl, then a length in
:40:01. > :40:05.advance of Was, followed by Vow who has a perfect run in fourth. They
:40:05. > :40:08.are followed by Colima, from Shirocco Star, further back is
:40:08. > :40:13.Betterbetterbetter, followed then by Coquet, The Fugue is well back
:40:13. > :40:17.in the field but travelling kindly. Then on the inside Devotion
:40:17. > :40:23.followed by Maybe and Kailani is last. As they steady now and start
:40:23. > :40:28.to run down Tattenham Hill, Nayarra is the leader in the Oaks by a
:40:28. > :40:32.length to Twirl, followed on the inside by Was, further back in the
:40:32. > :40:38.field then coming into fourth and nicely poised is Vow, followed then
:40:38. > :40:41.by on the inside Colima. They run down Tattenham Corner from Shirocco
:40:41. > :40:46.Star, Coquet giving them a start with Betterbetterbetter, The Fugue
:40:46. > :40:49.is ten lengths behind the leader from Devotion, Maybe and Kailani.
:40:49. > :40:55.The leader on the far side is Nayarra, but here come the
:40:55. > :41:00.challenges. On the outside Twirl, Was, followed by Shirocco Star,
:41:00. > :41:06.further back in the field then Coquet with nowhere to go, The
:41:06. > :41:10.Fugue has launched her run, Was takes the lead from Vow. Here is
:41:10. > :41:17.Shirocco Star putting in giant strides and The Fugue right down
:41:17. > :41:24.the outside. Was is the leader with 100 yards to go. Shirocco Star and
:41:24. > :41:34.The Fugue, holding on is Was and Was will win the Oaks! Was has got
:41:34. > :41:42.there from Shirocco Star, Vow, Maybe, Kailani, Coquet,
:41:42. > :41:50.Betterbetterbetter, Colima, Nayarra. The winner is this beautifully-bred
:41:50. > :41:56.filly, 14 Was. 20-1, one of the Quinn tent trained by Aiden - --
:41:56. > :42:01.quintet trained by Aidan O'Brien. Second is Shirocco Star. Has got
:42:01. > :42:05.within a neck of the winner. What a run. Third The Fugue. Came from
:42:05. > :42:08.well back at Tattenham Corner. Has run on well for a very gallant
:42:08. > :42:16.third. In fourth was Vow, who was beautifully-poised throughout.
:42:16. > :42:21.Hasn't really picked up as much as expected. And they were followed by
:42:21. > :42:26.Maybe and then Coquet, the one in the white cap, Kailani got into all
:42:26. > :42:31.sorts of bother in the early stages of the race. Got into a sandwich.
:42:31. > :42:38.On the inside is Betterbetterbetter. She couldn't emulate her sisters.
:42:38. > :42:42.Further back Colima, who was handy throughout. Then Devotion for
:42:42. > :42:49.Richard Hughes behind them. They were followed by Twirl, who was up
:42:49. > :42:59.there for most of the way. The early leader, Nayarra, has finished
:42:59. > :43:01.
:43:01. > :43:09.behind them. The time 2:38.60. The record is 2kph 31.33. So they have
:43:09. > :43:15.run about seven and -- 2:31.33. So they have run about seven-and-a-
:43:15. > :43:25.half seconds outside that record. Aidan O'Brien, he saddled five
:43:25. > :43:28.
:43:29. > :43:32.runners in the end. He decided not to go with Kissed. Was is the
:43:32. > :43:38.winner. The winning jockey with Rishi Persad.
:43:38. > :43:43.Take us through that run down the inside rail. I had enough horse to
:43:43. > :43:48.take two lengths when I needed it! You are receiving congratulations
:43:48. > :43:52.from Derek Smith, whose colours she's in? I have been very lucky in
:43:52. > :43:58.these. I thank the owners for having trust in me. How brave was
:43:58. > :44:04.she when the runners were coming at you? I had plenty of petrol. When
:44:04. > :44:09.you have plenty of petrol, you can go where you like. Enjoy that
:44:09. > :44:15.classic win. Thank you. This is a fourth success in the
:44:16. > :44:20.Oaks for Aidan O'Brien. For Seamie Heffernan, it is the first time he
:44:20. > :44:24.has won this great race. There was a lot of incident in the race. The
:44:24. > :44:28.Fugue has run on brilliantly from the back. What a run from Shirocco
:44:28. > :44:38.Star who came there cruising and looked like she might just take the
:44:38. > :44:44.
:44:44. > :44:53.Aidan O'Brien. Seamie has done a really good job. He's kept her down.
:44:53. > :44:56.He's gone one of the shortest routes, whereas Shirocco Star, they
:44:56. > :45:02.ran a great race, looked as though they might be able to pick up a
:45:02. > :45:08.furlong. But Was was just that little bit stronger. The Fugue was
:45:08. > :45:16.on the outside. Obviously went four five wide and covered that little
:45:16. > :45:23.bit extra ground. Seamie Heffernan, he has Road some big group one
:45:23. > :45:31.winners in the past. He is a great second string and lovely stable
:45:31. > :45:35.jockey. Here I am with the runner up, Darryl Holland. I don't think
:45:35. > :45:40.she was unlucky today. The way the race was run, it was a big tactical
:45:40. > :45:43.for Epsom. The winner had the rail and just kept hassling me towards
:45:44. > :45:49.the end. The was there any moment you thought you were going to get
:45:49. > :45:59.that? I thought at the furlong marker. But he just repelled me and
:45:59. > :46:12.
:46:12. > :46:16.the man in a Panama hat. The winning rider, Seamie Heffernan.
:46:16. > :46:24.Congratulating the onus for having so much faith in him. There is Paul
:46:24. > :46:29.Shanahan, one of the executives. Very happy scenes. Seamie Heffernan
:46:29. > :46:33.is a man who has been entrusted with quite a few good mounts over
:46:33. > :46:39.the years from the team. They always stress that it is a team
:46:39. > :46:44.game. So many good jockeys involved there. It is not just about J P
:46:44. > :46:50.McManus just going through a shot as well. If you look back at the
:46:50. > :46:55.results of the Irish Derby, Seamie Heffernan won on a soldier of
:46:55. > :47:00.Fortune and Frozen Fire there. He has been entrusted with a filly.
:47:00. > :47:10.She is going to be one of the most valuable fillies in Europe. She is
:47:10. > :47:15.
:47:15. > :47:20.out of a half-sister to New and one of the coal owners. Jim is
:47:20. > :47:27.saying she could be the most valuable filly in Europe. You are
:47:27. > :47:33.saying, really? 1.2 million. A great thrill. Very good. We quietly
:47:33. > :47:39.thought she'd run a big race. could be a huge two days we do.
:47:39. > :47:46.Coming into this meeting, you were sitting on 97 group winners in your
:47:46. > :47:49.colours. The team... I now have 98 group one winners on the Flat.
:47:49. > :47:53.could get to 100 if St Nicholas Abbey wins tomorrow and Camelot
:47:53. > :47:58.wins the Derby. Those sorts of dreams don't happen but that is
:47:58. > :48:03.what we will be dreaming of. Part one has come in. She has got such a
:48:03. > :48:08.lovely head. She seems to have a lovely attitude, very calm. Look at
:48:08. > :48:13.her bottom lip. She is a picture, isn't she? How has it changed your
:48:13. > :48:17.life to be part of this set-up? It's made me 10 years younger. I've
:48:17. > :48:21.enjoyed every minute of it. It is fantastic. My grandson has come
:48:21. > :48:27.from America today. We all get together a lot more often. It's
:48:27. > :48:33.fantastic. I'd better let you go. Your son is there, unique to be
:48:33. > :48:37.part of the photo. When Derek's name comes first it means they run
:48:37. > :48:41.in his colours. That is true of the Coronation Cup and also true of
:48:41. > :48:45.Camelot, who is hot favourite for the Derby. It means Aidan O'Brien,
:48:45. > :48:49.for the fourth time, comes home victorious in The Oaks. Well done
:48:49. > :48:55.to you. I guess it is true, you didn't know which one was good
:48:55. > :49:02.enough to win. They are seriously well-bred fillies. Anything is
:49:02. > :49:08.possible. Seamie gave her a lovely ride. We are delighted. She is not
:49:08. > :49:12.very big, but what a great, but the attitude she has. She is a very
:49:12. > :49:16.good looking filly. A great pedigree. Seamie Heffernan running
:49:16. > :49:18.down there to go back into the changing room to receive the
:49:18. > :49:23.congratulations of his fellow jockeys. It's great for him because
:49:23. > :49:31.he's been one of your foot soldiers for many years. It's great for
:49:31. > :49:38.Seamie. He knows all of the horses Inside Out. Nobody deserves it more.
:49:38. > :49:41.Maybe finished fifth in the end. She ran very well. But maybe
:49:41. > :49:50.dropped back. Maybe a mile-and-a- quarter is as far as she wants to
:49:50. > :49:55.go. A brief word on tomorrow, all save with Camelot? So far, so clear.
:49:55. > :50:02.Astrology could run really well. Absolutely. Delighted since Chester.
:50:02. > :50:06.Hopefully. The press are now assembled. They will feed on Aidan
:50:06. > :50:09.O'Brien's every word, as they swoop in and ask him to reflect on the
:50:09. > :50:14.victory of Was and also the question I was asking about Camelot
:50:14. > :50:18.and tomorrow. Despite the fact Aidan O'Brien has had so many
:50:18. > :50:23.runners in classics, it is still a big deal. As he says, still 24
:50:23. > :50:28.hours to go. He's got to keep Camelot and Astrology safe and
:50:28. > :50:31.sound, and turn up tomorrow to try and do the same again. This filly
:50:31. > :50:36.has made it three-up of free as far as classics are concerned this year
:50:36. > :50:40.but Aidan O'Brien in Britain. He won the 1000 with a homecoming
:50:40. > :50:46.queen. He won the 2000 with Camelot and now The Oaks with this filly,
:50:47. > :50:56.Was. Could it be four out of four in 2012, when Camelot steps out
:50:57. > :51:18.
:51:18. > :51:23.this morning. Well done to the favourite, The Fugue, almost on the
:51:23. > :51:28.deck early on. Here she is, pink jacket, William Buick riding. This
:51:28. > :51:33.is the early part of the race. How she stands up here. Very lucky. You
:51:33. > :51:38.can see Holland on the outside. He is keen to get in as tight as he
:51:38. > :51:44.can. There are five horses trying to fit into a slot that can only
:51:44. > :51:52.fit three. We will take a look from another angle. You see her here. As
:51:52. > :51:58.we run this on, the last three, Maybe and Richard Hughes' course,
:51:58. > :52:03.they tend to ride each other's horses for part of the race.
:52:03. > :52:09.meat in the sandwich gets thrown right up. Maybe just totally knocks
:52:09. > :52:18.her off her stride. The Fugue gets hampered also. It's just one of
:52:18. > :52:23.those things. The three at the back... Just have O'Brien giving no
:52:23. > :52:27.ground at all. A rough race at the back. Unfortunately, Mr Barzalona
:52:27. > :52:37.got squeezed out. Those were the moments at the beginning of the
:52:37. > :52:48.
:52:48. > :52:53.race, certainly The Fugue the Become not to the presentation for
:52:53. > :53:02.the Investec Oaks, what a thrilling finish there. On the podium, from
:53:02. > :53:07.Investec to make the presentation, they make the presentation to the
:53:07. > :53:17.owners of the gutsy filly, Was, who has belied odds of 20-1 to come
:53:17. > :53:33.
:53:33. > :53:39.home in front of battle all the way indeed, John's wife, Sue, have
:53:39. > :53:41.enjoyed so much success over the years. Thanks to the brilliance of
:53:41. > :53:45.a trainer who could end up doing the classic double at Epsom,
:53:45. > :53:49.because he had the odds on favourite, Camelot, in tomorrow's
:53:49. > :53:59.race. For now, he can savour and celebrate his fourth win in The
:53:59. > :54:07.
:54:07. > :54:11.Oaks. The winning trainer, Aidan part of the team at Ballydoyle, and
:54:11. > :54:19.always there to offer support and advice, now is his moment in the
:54:19. > :54:22.sun. His first win of the Investec Oaks, Seamie Heffernan. Many
:54:22. > :54:27.congratulations to the whole team involved in this beautifully bred
:54:27. > :54:37.filly, who we now think is the most valuable filly in Europe. Was is
:54:37. > :54:39.
:54:39. > :54:47.the winner of the 2012 Investec final stages. It was got through on
:54:47. > :54:57.the inside. Vow can't find any more. Shirocco Star has run so
:54:57. > :54:59.
:54:59. > :55:04.for early positions took place. Very lucky to stay on her feet.
:55:04. > :55:09.This filly, I do not joke when she -- organisation could be the most
:55:09. > :55:17.valuable in Europe. She is by Galileo, who is the horse who has
:55:17. > :55:24.underpinned all the success in recent years of the Ballydoyle team.
:55:24. > :55:29.A great moment for Aidan O'Brien and for Seamie Heffernan. Galileo
:55:29. > :55:39.is the daddy. He won the Derby in 2001. His legacy is just so
:55:39. > :55:49.
:55:49. > :55:53.Obst one. Seamie Heffernan in the the European Championships will
:55:53. > :55:59.come live from Epsom Downs. They have lots in store for you,
:55:59. > :56:03.including a performance from Ashley and Pudsey. The winner of Britain's
:56:03. > :56:08.Got Talent. But the football will be discussed! Straight after that,
:56:08. > :56:13.from 12:50pm, we will be live with the first official event of the
:56:13. > :56:20.Diamond Jubilee, the Investec Derby, in which Camelot is the shortest-
:56:20. > :56:30.priced favourite. That is since Entrepreneur. Entrepreneur didn't
:56:30. > :56:32.
:56:32. > :56:39.penalty kick. Who would you want taking it - Stuart Pearce or Wayne
:56:39. > :56:44.Rooney? What do you mean by that? What I mean is, who's going to take
:56:44. > :56:49.the penalty kick? Joseph is because he's on board. Let's hope Joseph
:56:49. > :56:53.can do it properly. Light one and not like the other. There is a
:56:53. > :56:59.Seamie Heffernan celebrating his success. One of the outsiders of
:56:59. > :57:02.Aidan O'Brien's five that he ran in The Oaks. You said is that a sign
:57:02. > :57:08.up strength or weakness, and you said strength - you were right.
:57:08. > :57:16.Don't forget, this filly, it comes from the stud in Northern Ireland,
:57:16. > :57:22.Seamie Burns. He is just like Aidan O'Brien. He is basically one of the
:57:22. > :57:26.best Paredes that has been. He has been producing Classic winners
:57:26. > :57:29.year-end, year out. He's had his family for about 30 years. Aidan
:57:29. > :57:37.O'Brien is on the phone and chatting to somebody who has been
:57:37. > :57:41.watching it on television, or Pat Keating. It could be his mother a.
:57:42. > :57:46.Or his mother. Aidan O'Brien is victorious here again in winning
:57:46. > :57:51.the Investec Oaks. He could be celebrating again in the Derby
:57:51. > :57:55.tomorrow. They have the hot favourite for that again in St
