:00:42. > :00:46.Good afternoon and welcome to the most gorgeous day here in Paris. We

:00:46. > :00:53.are at Longchamp for the greatest day of European racing and the most

:00:53. > :00:58.stylish. It is Arc Day and we have a field of 16 lining up for the

:00:58. > :01:02.Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. It is worth 1.9 million to the winner. A

:01:02. > :01:08.tremendous atmosphere and right now in the Winner's Enclosure because

:01:08. > :01:12.because Frankie Dettori has ridden his 500th group winner and he will

:01:12. > :01:22.be coming in behind Willie Carson and myself. It was done in style.

:01:22. > :01:26.We will show you the highlights of the Group 1 races. Frankie, you are

:01:27. > :01:34.guarantee a flying mount. It was so dramatic. He came from last to

:01:34. > :01:37.first on the inside rail. Exrodery stuff. Willie, it has been a

:01:37. > :01:44.sensational day. It has been fantastic racing and we've got the

:01:44. > :01:48.best to come. You have the Queen of horse racing, our next race and

:01:48. > :01:52.then we have the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, the world middle distance

:01:52. > :01:56.championship of the whole wide world and we have got the whole of

:01:56. > :01:59.the world watching this race because there is a lot of people

:01:59. > :02:07.around the world with horses running in this and it means a lot

:02:08. > :02:12.to be winning here in Paris today. The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe one

:02:12. > :02:18.of the greatest races and you are going to see a fantastic race.

:02:18. > :02:28.He is quite a salesman! For those involved, or training it

:02:28. > :02:31.

:02:31. > :02:36.is a tense day. Freddie Head who trained Goldikova. We will be

:02:36. > :02:43.talking to Kieren Fallon. He doesn't have a ride in the Arc.

:02:43. > :02:46.Aidan O'Brien was walking the course earlier with his hole family,

:02:46. > :02:53.Joseph O'Brien, he rides St Nicholas Abbey for his father who

:02:53. > :02:58.has three runners. The other two are Treasure Beach and So You Think.

:02:58. > :03:03.If he won the Arc, he could claim claim to be the best horse in the

:03:03. > :03:08.world. No reason why not and if he does, I might be saying those

:03:08. > :03:13.actual words. Don't say them too soon!

:03:13. > :03:18.Lets look at horses bidding to make headlines in the Arc.

:03:18. > :03:28.Bred in New Zealand, now trained in Ireland, he is the global commodity

:03:28. > :03:28.

:03:28. > :03:38.staking his claim to be the best in the world, So You Think.

:03:38. > :03:41.

:03:41. > :03:48.Ryan scoop Ryan Moore has paired up with Workforce.

:03:48. > :03:58.Galikov, Galikov, a, the half- sister to Goldikova.

:03:58. > :03:59.

:03:59. > :04:03.The most successful man is Andre with seven wins.

:04:03. > :04:08.Globe trotting group one winner, Snow Fairy is a willing and able

:04:08. > :04:16.partner for Frankie Dettori who rides in the race for a 24th year

:04:16. > :04:19.It has been hot back home in the UK. It is scorching out here in Paris.

:04:20. > :04:24.It was hot yesterday and very hot today. And the ground is officially

:04:24. > :04:28.good. There has been concern in the build-up about how quick conditions

:04:28. > :04:33.will be. The clerk of the course at Longchamp, responsible for the

:04:33. > :04:38.conditions, he put 10 millimetres on of water on the course on

:04:38. > :04:42.Thursday evening and that eased things a bit. We spoke to a few

:04:42. > :04:45.jockeys yesterday and some said there was some ease in the ground.

:04:45. > :04:53.Kieren Fallon who rode this afternoon, he suggested the ground

:04:53. > :04:59.was the oned good side, -- on the good side. It helps give the horses

:04:59. > :05:07.cushion and helps retain moisture. The jockeys said because of the

:05:07. > :05:13.heat it will get quicker as the day It is a sensational day. As a race,

:05:13. > :05:18.it looks the highest class. There are so many horses that can win.

:05:18. > :05:23.There are eight horses and they have a chance of winning.

:05:23. > :05:29.Ryan Moore a good story, he rushed back from injury. Just one ride

:05:29. > :05:35.today on Workforce. I wouldn't put that against Workforce, Workforce

:05:35. > :05:45.who won this race last year. He won the Derby and that was on fast

:05:45. > :05:48.

:05:48. > :05:56.ground. So the ground today, we're hearing is good ground. Three-year-

:05:56. > :06:00.olds have a fantastic record in this race. In the last 20-year-olds,

:06:00. > :06:10.three-year-olds have won and there is only one five-year-old won it in

:06:10. > :06:11.

:06:11. > :06:17.20 years. So You Think. Actually, he is not five because he

:06:17. > :06:23.was born in the southern Southern Hemisphere.

:06:23. > :06:32.The crowd not just boosted by French racing fans and English

:06:32. > :06:36.racing fans, but fan fans from Japan.

:06:36. > :06:44.There is scorchmarks on the gallops here.

:06:44. > :06:50.Let me tell you about the races we have coming up live on BBC Two.

:06:50. > :06:59.This race is all about Goldikova. It is her last race in Europe.

:06:59. > :07:07.She won this race last year and she is bidding for a 15th group one

:07:07. > :07:13.success. There is colts, and fillies and mares lining up for the

:07:13. > :07:16.Arc, Nicholas Abbey, So You Think and Treasure Beach. It is a really

:07:16. > :07:22.classy face. They could have a fairytale for the

:07:22. > :07:27.women. They have three fillies that could finish, one, two, three. What

:07:27. > :07:32.price would that be? Four. Some really good fillies in the race.

:07:32. > :07:36.Let's bring you up-to-date on the races so far. We have been showing

:07:36. > :07:46.them live on the Red Button. Here is happened.

:07:46. > :08:03.

:08:03. > :08:08.Here come the challengers. What a performance.

:08:09. > :08:16.For the first race of the day, it is good. Plenty of of horse under

:08:16. > :08:26.me, but when I come through, he had a lot of power. I rode him before.

:08:26. > :08:50.

:08:50. > :08:54.there is nothing in it. Tanning Tangerine tree maybe just. Soul

:08:54. > :09:04.power on the near side. I can't believe it. He progressed

:09:04. > :09:35.

:09:35. > :09:42.all the time. To win that, it is They race up towards the line.

:09:42. > :09:49.Zantinder on the rail. She was really decisive. I mean I

:09:49. > :09:54.didn't know were the others were because I was so biz ki ki keeping

:09:54. > :10:04.her -- busy keeping her straight. It seems she won easy. It was a

:10:04. > :10:21.

:10:21. > :10:31.150 yards left to go. Here come the chasing pack. Right down the mid-

:10:31. > :10:38.

:10:38. > :10:43.side rail, it's Frankie Dettori. Here is Frankie Dettori after

:10:43. > :10:48.riding your 500th group winner? It is an astonishing number. I'm lucky

:10:48. > :10:53.that I rode some great horses. Let's hope there are more coming

:10:53. > :10:57.next. Goldikova will be hard to beat, but if we can get placed I

:10:57. > :11:01.would be delighted. Snow Fairy is one of my favourites, I think she

:11:01. > :11:05.will ride a good race. You were excited when Ed gave her

:11:05. > :11:09.the all clear to run? She is a filly that comes to her own this

:11:09. > :11:12.the autumn. It is a tough race, but I really believe that she has a

:11:12. > :11:18.good chance. You seem to be flying it at the

:11:18. > :11:22.moment? I am now! Every jockey needs confidence and

:11:22. > :11:26.there is nothing more confidence boosting than riding your 500th

:11:26. > :11:28.group winner. There Is a man, when his confidence

:11:28. > :11:35.is high, he pulls things out of the bag.

:11:35. > :11:39.Like you in that sense. Really? When you were riding well,

:11:39. > :11:42.everything else happened. All right. Frankie, when there is

:11:43. > :11:48.the big occasion, there is no better jockey than Frankie Dettori

:11:48. > :11:51.on the big day and when things are going well. He is the, ah, he is

:11:51. > :11:54.one of the best jockeys I've ever seen basically in those

:11:54. > :12:00.circumstances. And what was amazing about that win

:12:00. > :12:02.and you had to pick it up and just what he does, he never picked his

:12:02. > :12:07.stick up. The horse is running for him.

:12:07. > :12:11.He had luck. He did have a bit of luck. But he was very brave in what

:12:11. > :12:15.he did and that's where the confidence comes in. If he wasn't

:12:15. > :12:18.riding with confidence, he he would have said to himself, I better get

:12:18. > :12:22.out of here. I better get my horse into daylight and give him a clean

:12:22. > :12:28.run. If your confidence is not high. When you are beaming with

:12:28. > :12:32.confidence, you sit there longer, you sit there and things just open

:12:32. > :12:38.like they did. Christmas came early to Frankie there!

:12:38. > :12:48.Sometimes in races and particularly when you get to the Arc you will

:12:48. > :12:50.

:12:50. > :12:54.see hard luck stories. Last year it didn't go well for for for Sarafina.

:12:54. > :13:04.Some people are thinking that Sarafina could win the race this

:13:04. > :13:05.

:13:05. > :13:15.We are back at Rc, it has not been the greatest race. We have had bad

:13:15. > :13:15.

:13:15. > :13:21.I was unlucky the day I broke my collarbone. That was two years ago?

:13:21. > :13:28.That was two years ago. I tried to forget this day forever. Then I

:13:28. > :13:35.finished fourth last year and then I finished second. This year,

:13:35. > :13:41.arguably your best chance on Sarafina. How unlucky do you think

:13:41. > :13:46.she was 12 months ago? She was very, very unlucky. You know, when you

:13:46. > :13:52.nearly fall down in the first, most of the time it means you lost all

:13:52. > :13:58.your chances to finish in the first four. She still came back and

:13:58. > :14:03.finished third. In such company, it was a great performance. This year

:14:03. > :14:07.she has a widish draw. What do you feel about that? She likes to wait,

:14:07. > :14:12.to be hidden behind another horse. I think it's not a very bad draw

:14:12. > :14:18.for her. I'm very confident. If I'm not confident with Sarafina, I will

:14:18. > :14:24.never be confident with any horse. Who do you think the main dangers

:14:24. > :14:32.are? I really fancy Snow Fairy because she's a top class horse. I

:14:32. > :14:36.have seen her winning in Japan and then at Hong Kong. She was very,

:14:36. > :14:40.very impressive, especially if the ground is fast and she will like it.

:14:40. > :14:46.She is ridden by Frankie Dettori which is a very positive point.

:14:47. > :14:52.What will it mean to you to win the Arc? For a jockey, it's the best

:14:52. > :14:59.thing that can happen for you as a jockey. Especially because I'm

:14:59. > :15:04.French, of course it is the race that we all dream to win. So I just

:15:04. > :15:08.cross the fingers, I try to do my job as well as possible and then

:15:08. > :15:12.the class will make the difference. You can tell from listening to

:15:12. > :15:17.Christophe Lemaire how much it matters to a French-based jockey.

:15:17. > :15:21.To any jockey, winning the Arc... Any jockey in the world. The

:15:21. > :15:26.Japanese have never won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. I would say in

:15:26. > :15:33.the next ten years, they will do so. They might do it today. They could.

:15:33. > :15:39.We have the first three back from last year - Workforce and Nakayama

:15:39. > :15:44.Festa and Sarafina. Is Sarafina the one that could win? I would think

:15:44. > :15:50.it would be the best of those horses. You have just seen how she

:15:50. > :15:54.was interfered with at the turn. That, I think, made her a very,

:15:54. > :15:59.very unlucky filly. She was further forward than I remembered. She ends

:15:59. > :16:04.up out the back after this interference. You can see he gets

:16:04. > :16:11.interference. You can see he gets snatched up. Look at that. Then she

:16:11. > :16:15.still gets out. Workforce narrowly missed it. He went the other way?

:16:15. > :16:25.He went inside. Workforce got all the luck in the race. You would

:16:25. > :16:28.

:16:28. > :16:31.have to think was he a lucky winner? Of the older horses she is

:16:31. > :16:36.the one? She's had the typical French preparation for the Prix de

:16:36. > :16:40.l'Arc de Triomphe which always seems to work. Only a few races, a

:16:40. > :16:50.prep race, which was a few weeks ago. She is ready to do herself

:16:50. > :16:55.justice. I would think of the French, the trainer has got the

:16:55. > :16:59.three-year-old colt which Reliable Man is another horse that puts a

:16:59. > :17:03.fly in the ointment. He didn't want to separate the two in his

:17:03. > :17:06.interview. You would have to think Sarafina has a first rate chance of

:17:06. > :17:10.winning the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe this year. You have a bug

:17:10. > :17:20.on you! It's a lucky spider. I haven't had a bet yet. You

:17:20. > :17:25.shouldn't have done that! It wasn't a lucky spider. It was a bug.

:17:25. > :17:28.de Royer-Dupre has a fantastic chance of winning. He has the

:17:29. > :17:33.three-year-old colt. He's got the filly who should have possibly won

:17:33. > :17:37.it as a three-year-old last year. Had perfect preparation this year

:17:37. > :17:42.doing into the race. He's sitting - - going into the race. He's sitting

:17:42. > :17:47.in the box seat. It's been a very difficult race for British trainers

:17:47. > :17:54.to win. Michael Stoute did it last year with Workforce. Ian Balding

:17:54. > :17:58.did it 40 years ago with Mill Reef. Michael Jarvis did it with Carol

:17:58. > :18:03.House. So sad to be here without Michael Jarvis. He died in the last

:18:03. > :18:08.two weeks and his funeral was on Friday. Hugely well attended in

:18:08. > :18:11.Newmarket. His death just the day after another racing legend in

:18:11. > :18:18.terms of Ginger McCain, the trainer of Red Rum. A moment or two to

:18:18. > :18:22.reflect on the remarkable careers of both men.

:18:22. > :18:27.The trainer who became a household name, forever associated with Red

:18:27. > :18:30.Rum, the Southport sands and small yard behind a used car showroom.

:18:30. > :18:38.Ginger McCain guided the little horse to three Grand National

:18:38. > :18:43.victories. We thought we would be competitive. When he goes, that was

:18:43. > :18:48.a bit special. Red Rum is going to win the National! At the line, Red

:18:48. > :18:56.Rum has just snatched it! People said he's a one-horse trainer. You

:18:56. > :19:06.are a one-horse trainer. I said, yes. What a bloody good job I had

:19:06. > :19:06.

:19:07. > :19:10.that one horse! Red Rum wins the National! Of course he was my

:19:10. > :19:17.friend. If you gave me the choice between him and my wife, she would

:19:17. > :19:25.have gone very quickly! It's hats off - a tremendous reception at

:19:25. > :19:31.Liverpool. Red Rum wins the National! What do you think about

:19:31. > :19:35.it now? I think it is bloody marvellous! Super. Never in doubt

:19:35. > :19:39.the way I saw it. Not many horses would adapt so well to TV

:19:39. > :19:45.appearances and turning on the Blackpool illuminations. They were

:19:45. > :19:50.both celebrities and there was more to come. Coming across the road, we

:19:50. > :19:54.were going to be a nice fourth. I thought we might have a chance of

:19:54. > :20:00.being third. Then a hundred yards, I thought we are going to win it!

:20:00. > :20:05.Flying down the outside, it might be another one for Ginger McCain.

:20:05. > :20:09.Four Grand National winners, retirement beckoned but not a

:20:09. > :20:14.diplomatic role. You said what about the pressures? There are no

:20:14. > :20:24.pressures. That's a load of (BLEEP). His son quickly added another

:20:24. > :20:25.

:20:25. > :20:29.National to the legend. You have got to give some credit to Donald.

:20:29. > :20:34.Why?! Go on. If I ever meet his father, I will congratulate him and

:20:34. > :20:39.ask him where the brains came from! He was passionate about the Grand

:20:39. > :20:45.National. He spoke his mind. He knew how to write a headline.

:20:45. > :20:54.Ginger McCain was one of a kind. Michael Jarvis won the admiration

:20:54. > :21:03.of fellow trainers and the racing public over a 43-year career.

:21:03. > :21:13.going to be Carol House. In his early days, he led up the winner of

:21:13. > :21:18.

:21:18. > :21:24.the Derby in 1966. He was favourite so we didn't have any fancy prices.

:21:24. > :21:29.I used to put a part of my 14 a week on him, you know. We knew we

:21:29. > :21:35.had something special. Michael's favourite horse was the winner of

:21:35. > :21:45.the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket. Although the English Derby proved

:21:45. > :21:52.

:21:52. > :22:02.illusive, the French version didn't. The best was to follow. Tough,

:22:02. > :22:04.

:22:04. > :22:14.talented temperamental, Rakti. Michael's final classic success

:22:14. > :22:14.

:22:14. > :22:20.came with Eswara. Eswara goes on to win. One of racing's exceptional

:22:20. > :22:27.trainers. It was what I was brought up to do. You get up and you go out

:22:28. > :22:36.and do it. Hopefully, we will have good days, but we had plenty of bad

:22:36. > :22:40.ones. Michael Jarvis was a gentle man and a gentleman.

:22:40. > :22:46.Two very contrasting characters. Very much so. Both of them hugely

:22:46. > :22:50.important to the sport of horse racing? Very much so. The National

:22:50. > :22:55.Hunt, the National, he was instrumental in bringing the

:22:55. > :23:00.National back to life. Quite a few years ago, it nearly never was. He

:23:00. > :23:06.was very helpful in getting it all back. Then you have Michael Jarvis,

:23:06. > :23:14.the stable lad who looked after Charlotte's Town, the Derby winner,

:23:14. > :23:21.dropped the rein and had to run after him. He was the most quiet,

:23:21. > :23:26.gentle, gracious - you would say such a calm person, but everybody

:23:26. > :23:36.in racing loved Michael Jarvis. He was a great sort of cool customer.

:23:36. > :23:41.

:23:41. > :23:48.You know the day they won the Arc here, I was standing behind Michael

:23:48. > :23:54.and he said, "What won it?" And Gay turned round and said, "We did!"

:23:54. > :24:01.He's been ill a long time. Put it this way, it wasn't a shock. No.

:24:01. > :24:04.was a great man. A wonderful man. He inspired such loyalty in the

:24:04. > :24:09.people that worked for him. Phillip Robinson associated with so many of

:24:09. > :24:14.those great horses. Phillip, the day of Michael Jarvis's funeral,

:24:15. > :24:21.the news came through that Phillip Robinson had decided to retire as a

:24:21. > :24:26.jockey. Probably the right decision to make, but the timing was

:24:26. > :24:30.terribly emotive? It was. There we go. We have to get on. We have lost

:24:30. > :24:35.a great man in Michael Jarvis. Phillip Robinson comes to a great

:24:35. > :24:39.career at the end. Now, we've got the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

:24:39. > :24:43.Before that, we have the Prix De La Foret and the chance for French

:24:43. > :24:47.crowds to bid goodbye to Goldikova who is on her way down to the start

:24:47. > :24:53.on the far side there with the white cap. Goldikova, one of the

:24:53. > :24:57.world's great horses and a 14-time- winning Group 1 matter going for a

:24:57. > :25:02.record extending 15th win in a Group 1. Then she will go to the

:25:02. > :25:07.Breeders' Cup in America and try and win the Breeders' Cup Mile for

:25:07. > :25:12.a fourth time. No horse has ever done that. Everything she does now

:25:12. > :25:20.is breaking a record. I have seen her look better in the paddock. Her

:25:20. > :25:24.coat was a bit dull. I have seen her look better. I'm with the

:25:24. > :25:29.trainer of Goldikova. How will she get on today? I hope she does well.

:25:29. > :25:34.We have a leader. She seems well. As well as ever, I think. We will

:25:34. > :25:40.see. Cross our fingers. She looks better today than she did at Royal

:25:40. > :25:46.Ascot? I don't know. I don't know. You can't say that. I mean, maybe

:25:46. > :25:52.she's better in the autumn than she is in the spring. I think she's

:25:52. > :25:59.been good all year-round. She's got such a great fan club. Can you tell

:25:59. > :26:05.people that she is still as good as ever? I am sure she is. The main

:26:05. > :26:09.goal is the Breeders' Cup. Good luck. There is the great matter,

:26:09. > :26:19.Goldikova, Olivier Peslier in the saddle. Let's check the runners and

:26:19. > :26:19.

:26:19. > :27:15.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 55 seconds

:27:15. > :27:22.afternoon so far in terms of records. Kasbah Bliss winning at

:27:22. > :27:25.the age of nine. A tense Group 1 win for William Buick and also a

:27:25. > :27:30.500th Group race win for Frankie Dettori. So what will be the story

:27:30. > :27:34.here? Well, it will be interesting which ever way it goes. Goldikova

:27:34. > :27:41.is the one that everybody is talking about. William Buick gets

:27:41. > :27:46.the ride on Dream Ahead. He looked well in the paddock. Seven furlongs,

:27:46. > :27:50.possibly a bit stretch for him. He seems to be a better horse over six.

:27:50. > :27:55.Goldikova - it's a trial race, but I am sure that is all it will be.

:27:55. > :28:01.It will be a trial for the Breeders' Cup. This guy, who is our

:28:01. > :28:05.champion sprinter elect, Dream Ahead, would like a bit more juice

:28:05. > :28:10.in the ground than he is going to get today. Possibly you won't see

:28:10. > :28:20.the best of him. Dream Ahead the winner of the July Cup and the

:28:20. > :28:32.

:28:32. > :28:36.Sprint Cup at Haydock. Frankie by birth. Marchand D'or a former

:28:36. > :28:46.Abbey horse is going to be the last one in and Jim McGrath is our

:28:46. > :28:48.

:28:48. > :28:53.Goldikova starting from stall two. Second from the camera. That's it.

:28:53. > :28:58.They're ready. Racing! A good line. Down near the inside

:28:58. > :29:03.Flash Dance is ridden hard with the whip to try and lead, but can't get

:29:03. > :29:07.there, Goldikova cruising on her outside. Now striding up is

:29:07. > :29:12.Worthadd. Frankie Dettori now the pacemaker gets into stride and

:29:12. > :29:21.starts to clap on a bit of pace. In third is Goldikova. In the

:29:21. > :29:25.slipstream of the pacemaker. Dream Ahead is on the outside. Tucked

:29:25. > :29:29.away, Dever Dream. Second last is Bewitched and Marchand D'or is last.

:29:29. > :29:34.Racing up the strait towards the home bend, just over three furlongs

:29:35. > :29:38.to go and the second Winning Post. Into the home strait now. It is

:29:38. > :29:43.Flash Dance in front. In behind them is Goldikova going well.

:29:44. > :29:48.Further back in the field Dream Ahead. Further back, Dever Dream

:29:48. > :29:52.has broken down and dropped right now. Half-way up the home strait,

:29:52. > :29:56.Goldikova got through on the inside. Worthadd is challenging and here is

:29:56. > :30:02.Dream Ahead on the outside. Goldikova the champion mare she

:30:02. > :30:08.gets down to fight here. It is Goldikova and Dream Ahead. She is

:30:08. > :30:12.sticking at it. She is a champion. She is just in front. Now a lunge

:30:12. > :30:17.from Dream Ahead. They hit the line. It is very tight. Dream Ahead and

:30:17. > :30:23.Goldikova in a photo. Surfrider followed by Bewitched and behind

:30:23. > :30:29.them is Worthadd and then followed by Marchand D'or and last is Flash

:30:29. > :30:35.Dance and Dever Dream unfortunately has broken down, but this is a

:30:35. > :30:39.championship race and what a champion filly. Two champions.

:30:39. > :30:45.Dream Ahead, far side, the all time champion, if you like, Goldikova.

:30:45. > :30:51.They raced towards the line. She won't give in, the filly, but Dream

:30:51. > :30:57.Ahead maybe just. From Goldikova, it is very tight. It is a bob and a

:30:57. > :31:03.gap then to Surfrider followed by Bewitched and they were clear then

:31:03. > :31:11.of Worthadd and Marchand D'or. And it is very tight. William Buick,

:31:11. > :31:21.maybe his second group one success of the day. He was successful in

:31:21. > :31:23.

:31:23. > :31:30.the race before. He has no doubt that he has won. David Simcock is

:31:30. > :31:33.the trainer. This is a marvellous racehorse. It had to cope with

:31:33. > :31:43.quick ground and has gone to the line with a champion in Goldikova.

:31:43. > :31:45.

:31:45. > :31:50.this. The angle is deceptive and Jim is saying it is tight because

:31:50. > :31:59.the television angle makes it look as if Dream Ahead won more easily

:31:59. > :32:03.than he may have done. Goldikova hitting the front here with her

:32:03. > :32:06.head down. She doesn't get too far off the ground. She is just a

:32:06. > :32:10.racing machine and Dream Ahead coming on the right of the picture.

:32:10. > :32:14.William Buick almost not wanting to take her on too soon because he

:32:14. > :32:19.didn't want to give Goldikova the chance to fight back, but Dream

:32:19. > :32:27.Ahead is confirmed the winner. William William Buick has managed

:32:27. > :32:32.to win this on David Simcock's horse. They denied Goldikova a

:32:32. > :32:39.winning farewell to her French fans. A fantastic race. Our champion

:32:39. > :32:43.sprinter, he had the speed to beat this champion mare, seven furlongs

:32:43. > :32:47.in all fairness, it is not her best trip. It is short of her best trip.

:32:47. > :32:51.It is not his best trip either. I thought possibly he would be

:32:51. > :32:57.better over six furlongs rather than search, but he proved me wrong.

:32:57. > :33:02.He beat the champion, the Queen of racing by the shortest of short

:33:02. > :33:07.heads by the looks of it, but it is his day today. Goldikova, she can

:33:07. > :33:10.go to the Breeders' Cup and possibly once she runs over there

:33:10. > :33:14.and finishes her career on a winning note.

:33:14. > :33:21.Freddie Head was straightforward about the fact that this was a prep

:33:22. > :33:30.race for the Breeders' Cup. He was not necessarily expecting to win.

:33:30. > :33:36.The colours that were carried to Derby success.

:33:36. > :33:43.William Haggas trained him. I was struggling to get his name.

:33:43. > :33:49.Credit to David Simcock, I think he did a fantastic job. They were

:33:49. > :33:52.joint rated. Yes, at two. But to have brought the plans of trying to

:33:52. > :33:57.get him to stay further and to come back and say, "We have got a

:33:57. > :34:02.sprinter on our hands. Six or seven furlongs, we can win group one

:34:02. > :34:05.races at this distance.". It will be interesting to see if they keep

:34:05. > :34:10.him in training and go for all the sprint raceds. There was a -- races.

:34:10. > :34:16.There was a story going around that he might retire. Well, we will see

:34:16. > :34:19.what happens after the race and see if the owner does want to him in

:34:20. > :34:24.training another year, but he is a very, very good horse. The two

:34:24. > :34:28.horses Goldikova and him, they went away from the rest of the field and

:34:28. > :34:36.we were watching. Two magnificent horses.

:34:36. > :34:45.The cameras in the second place were around Goldikova and tracking

:34:45. > :34:49.her through with Olivier Peslier being surrounded with microphones

:34:49. > :34:54.and being asked what happened. What does it tell us for the next

:34:54. > :34:59.race? This guy he needs sponge in the ground. He has gone out there

:34:59. > :35:05.and beat the Queen of horse racing so the ground has got to be all

:35:05. > :35:10.right for the horses in the Arc de Triomphe. The ground is going to be

:35:10. > :35:15.OK for those horses. Brilliant pictures from fench

:35:16. > :35:23.television. -- French television. Racing looks so more beautiful when

:35:23. > :35:33.you can actually see hat horses are doing and the look in their eye.

:35:33. > :35:34.

:35:34. > :35:44.was one of her most courageous performances even though she was

:35:44. > :35:52.

:35:52. > :35:54.beaten. There is Olivier Peslier who rode her. They will go to

:35:54. > :35:57.America with high hopes of winning the Broadmeaders Cup mile. When she

:35:57. > :36:01.actually won two years ago, in 2009, she was third in this race. Last

:36:01. > :36:07.year she won it. So she goes here off the back of a second. She is a

:36:07. > :36:15.fantastic mare. A six-year-old mare. There is William Buick coming back.

:36:16. > :36:22.What a great day and he rides Masked Marvel in the next race

:36:22. > :36:26.coming up on the BBC. William Buick doing something he has become very

:36:26. > :36:34.accustomed and that's entering the Winner's Enclosure after a group

:36:34. > :36:42.one race. Sadly, Dever Dream doesn't look in good shape. She

:36:42. > :36:52.broke down. The attendants are with her. I think Maureen Haggas is with

:36:52. > :37:18.

:37:19. > :37:24.her and Richard Hughes. We will There is huge amounts of of people

:37:24. > :37:31.here in preparation for the Arc. Willie, a really good build-up?

:37:31. > :37:33.have had fantastic racing today. The British horses are doing well?

:37:33. > :37:38.This Arc de Triomphe, there is eight horses in the race, you could

:37:38. > :37:42.say, you could bet. If you said what about? I would say I couldn't

:37:42. > :37:46.put you off because there is a case for all the horses.

:37:46. > :37:51.We will discuss those this a moment or two. You and I are looking

:37:51. > :37:54.forward to two weeks time when it will be the first ever British

:37:54. > :37:57.Champions Day. We're going to have something like

:37:57. > :38:03.this. this.

:38:03. > :38:09.meeting. The best you will find find anywhere in the world. This

:38:09. > :38:12.place is special because it has stood the test of time.

:38:12. > :38:17.For 300 years horses have been racing here at Ascot and the people

:38:17. > :38:22.come because it has a sprinkling of stardust. It is special and

:38:22. > :38:32.historic. There are moments in life when you

:38:32. > :38:32.

:38:33. > :38:39.want to be able to say, "I was William Buick will be featuring.

:38:39. > :38:43.William, a fantastic afternoon. A tremendous horse who you have had

:38:43. > :38:47.to be patient with. David has trained this horse to

:38:47. > :38:51.perfection. He has not been easy the whole way through. There is no

:38:51. > :38:59.point in saying David is a good trainer because everybody knows he

:38:59. > :39:03.is a a fantastic trainer. Everything panned out today. I wish

:39:03. > :39:09.Goldikova wasn't second because she is the people's favourite and I am

:39:09. > :39:15.a fan myself. He was a worthy winner and the best horse won the

:39:15. > :39:24.race and I always said he would be better in a big race and today he

:39:25. > :39:31.went up and he had done enough then. You are being taken away. Good luck

:39:31. > :39:36.with Masked Marvel. A hugely glamorous day and anyone

:39:36. > :39:40.who turns up is wearing a hat and you can get in for free. They have

:39:40. > :39:44.come here to enjoy a social day out as well as the racing and they have

:39:44. > :39:54.been treated to some exciting finishes and for all fans of

:39:54. > :40:01.British racing, it is exciting that the the Prix De La Foret was won by

:40:01. > :40:07.a British horse. You came over with the horse. We

:40:11. > :40:15.announcement that the train was not leaving London because of a

:40:15. > :40:22.technical problem. Has he got home? He is delighted.

:40:22. > :40:26.It is a good omen. Last time Prohibit won Robert Cowell had

:40:26. > :40:30.travel difficulties and didn't make it. I said, "Don't worry, it is

:40:30. > :40:35.fine. We don't need you.". Do you know if he will race on next year

:40:35. > :40:40.or not? You hope so? I hope so, but no,

:40:40. > :40:43.there is nothing official as to what will happen, but we would love

:40:43. > :40:48.to train him obviously because he has been very good to us, very

:40:48. > :40:53.special to us What a see season it has been?

:40:53. > :40:57.amazing. It was a slow start with Dream Ahead, but David had immense

:40:57. > :41:06.faith in him, yeah very special. Is that it for him this year?

:41:06. > :41:11.That's his last run the owner's ownership.

:41:11. > :41:15.There has been some deal done? There was a lot of interest after

:41:15. > :41:18.his couple of runs and there will be an announcement. But it is not

:41:18. > :41:22.my place to make it right now. Well, I won't press you.

:41:22. > :41:26.As your husband is not here to glory in this, what would you like

:41:26. > :41:29.to say about him and the team and I know how hard you work and how

:41:29. > :41:35.strong a part. You came over yesterday with the horse? No, it

:41:35. > :41:43.has been a massive team effort. We started out in 2004, but to have a

:41:43. > :41:49.horse of Dream Ahead's calibre. It is what you dream of of and it

:41:49. > :41:59.makes a difference. And raising morale and attracting support to

:41:59. > :42:01.

:42:01. > :42:05.the to the yard, but they have been our best owners to date.

:42:05. > :42:14.A tremendous effort and what a horse. Well handled by him. I am

:42:14. > :42:19.going to make may way back over to Willie. Snow snow Snow Fairy coming

:42:19. > :42:23.over under the care of Ed Dunlop. She has been off over the world

:42:23. > :42:30.winning prize money. She will be the 24th consecutive ride in the

:42:31. > :42:40.Arc for Frankie Dettori and Ritchie went to Newmarket to see Snow Fairy

:42:40. > :42:44.and to talk to her trainer, Ed Ed Dunlop has been to the Arc

:42:44. > :42:49.before with a filly. He is back there again with another great

:42:49. > :42:52.filly, Snow Fairy who is just behind us. From my untrained eye,

:42:52. > :42:57.she looks magnificent, what do you think? We are happy with her. She

:42:57. > :43:00.is in good form. Her work has been very pleasing and we'll give it a

:43:00. > :43:03.go. She is better than she was last year, but whether that's good

:43:03. > :43:06.enough to be winning an Arc or placed in an Arc, only time will

:43:06. > :43:10.tell. She is unbelievable. She is

:43:10. > :43:15.fantastic. She makes my morning coming in every day, she never does

:43:15. > :43:18.anything, but she likes to have a snarl at you. If you have a packet

:43:18. > :43:23.of Poloes or a carrot and she is your best friend.

:43:23. > :43:33.Can you tell us about Snow Fairy as aierling, it is amazing that she

:43:33. > :43:34.

:43:34. > :43:39.will be running for 1,000 times, This filly was not wanted by anyone

:43:39. > :43:44.and was brought back by the stud for 18 euros. She won over 2

:43:44. > :43:50.million in prize money last year so thank God nobody wanted her. It is

:43:50. > :43:54.pure luck. Aren't we lucky to have horses to get you out of trouble?

:43:54. > :44:00.Snow Fairy, what a ride this is. Snow Fairy wins the Oaks. At the

:44:00. > :44:07.end of last year, Snow Fairy achieved a double by winning two

:44:07. > :44:11.highly-competitive Group 1s in Japan and Hong Kong. I sometimes

:44:11. > :44:21.feel people don't appreciate how significant her achievements abroad

:44:21. > :44:27.

:44:27. > :44:32.were? We were in quarantine. We stumbled and fell over. She scraped

:44:32. > :44:38.her knees. I ended up with ten stitches in my bottom lip.

:44:39. > :44:43.filly ripped her knees open. She spent eight days there. Then she

:44:43. > :44:51.was boxed down to Kyoto and she won. We then took her to Hong Kong and

:44:51. > :45:01.she won the Hong Kong Cup beating the colts. Snow Fairy races up.

:45:01. > :45:03.

:45:03. > :45:10.What a season for the British three-year-old filly! Ouija Board,

:45:10. > :45:15.she kept going. This filly stays in training next year. That is great

:45:15. > :45:22.news for us. Is she better? I don't know. I think this filly is

:45:22. > :45:26.probably tougher. She is more aggressive than Ouija Board was.

:45:26. > :45:31.Ouija Board's Arc run was seven years ago. What do you remember of

:45:31. > :45:36.that afternoon? She was very unlucky. She got too far back.

:45:36. > :45:39.Could happen on Sunday. She finished third. It was a

:45:39. > :45:46.finished third. It was a frustrating day. Cherry Mix on the

:45:46. > :45:52.far side. Ouija Board coming now. Baigo wins the Arc. Snow Fairy

:45:52. > :46:01.warmed up for this year's European showpiece on the back of her best

:46:01. > :46:04.run ever losing out to So You Think. She is back to her best now. She

:46:04. > :46:10.feels fantastic. I would love her to win. One of the exciting things

:46:10. > :46:17.about when you have a runner in a big race, we enjoy replaying the

:46:17. > :46:19.moment of celebration. Those few moments seem like... A bit of a

:46:19. > :46:24.football hooligan! Apologies to those who don't like the way we

:46:24. > :46:30.celebrate. If we won the Arc, it would be the biggest day in my

:46:30. > :46:37.training career. Good luck to the whole Snow Fairy team. Among those

:46:37. > :46:40.looking forward to the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is Bo Derek.

:46:40. > :46:44.She's over here promoting the Breeders' Cup for this year and

:46:44. > :46:49.hoping to get as many European runners as possible to add to the

:46:49. > :46:53.glamour of that occasion. Horses are not here yet. So we can give

:46:54. > :47:03.you a full rundown of the runners and riders with Jim.

:48:14. > :48:18.brought out in front of this fantastic crowd here. That is like

:48:18. > :48:22.a... There is Sarafina, the favourite. That is like a

:48:22. > :48:27.collecting ring. After they get saddled they get into their right

:48:27. > :48:33.order and before they come out to parade around the paddock they

:48:33. > :48:36.always come out here together in their race card order. That's like

:48:41. > :48:48.thoughts as well for connections and horses to remain as calm for as

:48:48. > :48:53.long as possible? Yes. It is the most beautiful paddock and

:48:53. > :49:03.situation here at Longchamp with all these nice trees. The trees

:49:03. > :49:11.

:49:11. > :49:16.turning to all the different colours of brown. Andre Fabre there.

:49:42. > :49:46.The Japanese contingent fancy both their horses. I think they think

:49:46. > :49:51.Hiruno D'Amour might be the one. Because he is working so well.

:49:51. > :49:59.Since he's arrived here, he's had his trial race. He's improved on

:49:59. > :50:06.his trial. He's given out his wellbeing by galloping and working

:50:22. > :50:26.second to Workforce last year. the preparation with this race in

:50:26. > :50:31.mind. He will run, obviously, better than he's run since the race

:50:31. > :50:35.last year. He will do a bit better than he did last year. That is what

:50:35. > :50:40.the Japanese will be hoping. I don't know who that guy is, do you?

:50:40. > :50:48.I don't know. I guess he is famous. Here is another famous person.

:50:48. > :50:53.is the most successful trainer in Arc history, Andre Fabre. Meandre

:50:53. > :50:58.is not a bad substitute? Exactly. He showed similar form on good

:50:58. > :51:03.ground. So I think he will have a fair chance. How do you assess the

:51:03. > :51:06.quality of the race? There's a lot of question marks in this race. The

:51:06. > :51:09.quality of the three-year-olds compared to the older horses, to

:51:09. > :51:15.the females as well. A lot of questions. It looks quite an open

:51:15. > :51:20.race. In terms of your confidence coming into it, compared to the

:51:20. > :51:25.other winners of the Arc, how are you feeling? He is more of a hope

:51:25. > :51:32.than a certainty. He has a big heart. He likes the fast ground.

:51:32. > :51:36.I'm - he will run a good race. Thank you. Andre Fabre. And the

:51:36. > :51:39.horses still haven't appeared from the saddling boxes. They get

:51:40. > :51:43.saddled up down in the cool over here and get led out by a show

:51:43. > :51:48.horse almost. It is quite a performance, quite dramatic. It

:51:48. > :51:52.also means that most owners and trainers are still down there with

:51:52. > :51:59.their horses and the crowd waiting to get their first glimpse. They

:51:59. > :52:03.won't come round very many times, so keep your eyes peeled. Let's

:52:03. > :52:13.take a look at two of the main protagonists for this race. In a

:52:13. > :52:17.moment, we will have a look at the form guide. Sarafina going round

:52:17. > :52:24.the paddock again. Sarafina, Willie owned by the Aga Khan. He tends to

:52:24. > :52:30.retire them at three. He was determined to keep her in training

:52:30. > :52:35.for this particular day, to take revenge for what happened last year,

:52:35. > :52:39.or avenge what happened last year? Yes, she's the favourite. You would

:52:39. > :52:43.have to think she has a first rate chance of winning this race this

:52:43. > :52:53.year. But there are a lot of animals in the race with great

:52:53. > :52:54.

:52:54. > :53:01.chances. Hasn't he got a lovely beard?! The walrus. Two of the

:53:01. > :53:09.horses were seen in last year's Eclipse. Snow Fairy ends up being

:53:09. > :53:15.beaten a long way. How good a race was this? He was committed to go

:53:15. > :53:18.early, Workforce, and try and take the sting out of So You Think. He

:53:18. > :53:25.wasn't able to do so, So You Think had just that little bit of turn of

:53:25. > :53:30.foot that he couldn't repel. There you can see that this Australian-

:53:30. > :53:34.New Zealand bred horse, a champion, a big superstar that he is, won the

:53:34. > :53:42.day. Snow Fairy there, she finished quite a way back. She was having

:53:42. > :53:47.her first run for quite some time. She would improve. That's when she

:53:47. > :53:52.went to Leopardstown. She got a lot closer to So You Think. So if she

:53:52. > :53:56.improves again, that cloudys the picture even more. Yes, it does.

:53:57. > :54:01.Workforce, though, people will say that he is back to the trip that

:54:01. > :54:07.suits him best, the mile-and-a- half? It definitely will. He will

:54:07. > :54:12.be suited by that. What about So You Think? So You Think - I would

:54:12. > :54:20.have preferred a mile and a quarter with him. I definitely know that he

:54:20. > :54:24.is the best horse. That's over a mile and a quarter. So You Think

:54:24. > :54:27.will be running in the colours of Derek Smith, as will St Nicholas

:54:27. > :54:30.Abbey and Treasure Beach. Is it luck that the three of them are in

:54:30. > :54:35.your purple and white? Absolutely. That is the way it goes. It is

:54:36. > :54:41.great to have the choice to choose the colour hats. They are three

:54:41. > :54:46.talented horses. How do you sum them up? Well, Treasure Beach, he's

:54:46. > :54:51.done nothing wrong this year. Wins the Irish Derby. Wins in America.

:54:51. > :54:56.So You Think, his reputation goes before him. St Nicholas Abbey, I

:54:56. > :55:00.suppose a champion two-year-old. Didn't make it last year. This year,

:55:01. > :55:04.ran some solid races. We are hoping for the best. We wish you luck. The

:55:04. > :55:10.horses have come into the parade ring. They are headed by Workforce,

:55:10. > :55:15.last year's winner, who looks very relaxed and very cool. It is an

:55:15. > :55:20.extremely warm day here. So interesting to see who is sweating

:55:20. > :55:27.up and who is absolutely fine. 2 is St Nicholas Abbey. We were talking

:55:27. > :55:34.to his owner. He is a fine-boned horse. Not much of him. 3, the grey,

:55:34. > :55:39.that is Silver Pond. Then we have Hiruno D'Amour followed by Nakayama

:55:39. > :55:44.Festa who was second in the race last year. Here comes the big beast,

:55:44. > :55:50.So You Think. Pat giving us a wink. He is enormous! He's got the tattoo,

:55:50. > :55:55.the numbers that you see on New Zealand-bred horses. He did all his

:55:55. > :56:01.racing in Australia. He's only been beaten once in five starts since he

:56:01. > :56:08.joined Aidan O'Brien. This looks as if it is Treasure Beach. It is. He

:56:08. > :56:13.is getting a bit warm. That is Meandre. Then we have Masked Marvel.

:56:13. > :56:18.He has been supplemented in the race, a St Leger winner. Now we

:56:18. > :56:23.have Sarafina. So we will have a whole string of fillies. That is

:56:23. > :56:27.Snow Fairy and then with the sheepskin nose band we have Shareta.

:56:27. > :56:37.Testosterone here. I think that is a bizarre name for a filly. I have

:56:37. > :56:47.to say, -- I think that is a bizarre name for a filly, I have to

:56:47. > :56:50.

:56:50. > :56:53.say. Danedream and then Galikova. We are going to try and find the

:56:53. > :56:59.Workforce team. Ryan Moore coming back after his very serious injury,

:56:59. > :57:07.which saw him out for two months with a broken thumb and a broken

:57:07. > :57:13.shoulder. Obviously, Workforce have been concerned about the --

:57:13. > :57:19.obviously workforce - the team have been concerned about the ground.

:57:19. > :57:25.Sir Michael Stoute in the grey suit right in front of us. Remember,

:57:25. > :57:33.this is a big price for a horse that won the race last year but won

:57:33. > :57:37.the Derby in a record time. If you pan down for me, Prince Khalid

:57:37. > :57:41.having a look at Ryan Moore's thumb and hand and checking with him if

:57:41. > :57:46.he is all fit to go and he is saying he very much is. Came back

:57:46. > :57:53.on Friday with two rides on Ascot and said after that there will be

:57:53. > :57:58.no problem, and the Arc and riding Workforce in the Arc was very much

:57:58. > :58:04.the catalyst for the speed of his return. He wouldn't have bothered

:58:04. > :58:11.for just any old race or horse. But this is the one that he wanted to

:58:11. > :58:15.be here for and just - Michael? Can I ask you one thing? Can I ask you

:58:15. > :58:25.one thing? Ryan is all set to go. Is the horse all right? Are you

:58:25. > :58:28.

:58:28. > :58:36.suitable as last year, but yeah, he is in good shape and he travelled

:58:36. > :58:46.well. Yeah, in good nick. Alain de Royer-Dupre Has two

:58:46. > :58:48.

:58:48. > :58:53.runners and both are fancied. You can see Christophe Lemaire with

:58:53. > :59:00.his arm around Christophe's shoulder.

:59:00. > :59:06.You can see the cameras. They are all focusing on the owner. He has

:59:06. > :59:11.had so much success over the years as did his grandfather and it is a

:59:11. > :59:18.race that he doesn't just ask his trainers to train horses for, he

:59:18. > :59:24.breeds them to try and win the Arc and Alain de Royer-Dupre talking

:59:24. > :59:34.through what they might be trying to do with Sarafina. Last year we

:59:34. > :59:34.

:59:34. > :59:42.saw how unlucky she was when Midas Touch came through the field.

:59:42. > :59:46.Sarafina has an outstanding chance and Shareta too.

:59:46. > :59:52.The jockey in the foreground is the man who I suspect will set the pace

:59:52. > :59:59.and decide how fast they're going and that is an important part of

:59:59. > :00:06.the scene. Let's dive over here and have a look and she if we can find

:00:06. > :00:10.John gas den who has -- Gosden who has Masked Marvel in the race.

:00:10. > :00:16.William Buick must be bursting with confidence because it has been a

:00:16. > :00:20.good afternoon for him already and John Gosden advising the owners to

:00:20. > :00:25.pay the 100,000 euros to supplement Masked Marvel as a late entry into

:00:25. > :00:29.the Arc after he won the St Ledger and he won the St Ledger in record

:00:29. > :00:35.time so he is a horse who can stay, but he has plenty of pace as well.

:00:35. > :00:40.He has a turn of foot and they are happy to take their chance. And

:00:40. > :00:46.William Buick going to get a leg up. Some of the jockeys are on board,

:00:46. > :00:51.Workforce who is watchdoging behind John, he -- walking behind John,

:00:51. > :01:01.Ryan Moore won't get on until he gets to the exit. Let's look at the

:01:01. > :01:01.

:01:01. > :02:04.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 55 seconds

:02:05. > :02:10.Just getting on her toes. Snow Fairy is cool and Frankie is cool

:02:10. > :02:14.as well. Galikova with Olivier Peslier. Olivier and Frankie are

:02:14. > :02:22.both trying to win the Arc for the fourth time which would put them

:02:22. > :02:26.among a list of record winning jockeys in the race including

:02:26. > :02:32.Freddie Hett. Now here comes Ryan Moore on Workforce. You can have a

:02:32. > :02:37.look. He has this Australian nose band on, the orange one and a cross

:02:37. > :02:40.nose bnd over that -- band over the top of that to keep his mouth shut

:02:41. > :02:47.and he can hold him in the early stages. It is a warm day and I

:02:47. > :02:51.don't think he looks too bad. He looks well in fact. Joseph O'Brien

:02:51. > :02:56.gets his first ride in the Arc on St Nicholas Abbey. He is a

:02:56. > :03:01.difficult ride. He is warm. He is a fractious horse, but Joseph has

:03:01. > :03:05.ridden him already in top class company and I think actually will

:03:05. > :03:15.just ride him with full confidence and probably drop his hands on him

:03:15. > :03:20.

:03:20. > :03:27.and try and relax him and say, "If you are good enough, go and do it."

:03:27. > :03:31.Here is So You Think. He must be 100 kilos heavier. Behind him,

:03:31. > :03:36.Treasure Beach is dripping with sweat. It looks like he has bubbled

:03:36. > :03:42.over and that's the problem, you know, yes, OK fine to sweat when it

:03:42. > :03:47.is this warm, but if you get that geed up, you will expand energy and

:03:47. > :03:57.negate your chances. All right, Frankie. He is so relaxed. He is so

:03:57. > :03:57.

:03:57. > :04:01.happy. "look at me." He says. So really exciting Arc de Triomphe. A

:04:01. > :04:09.great race in prospect. Sarafina looks calm and collected

:04:09. > :04:14.and unlike a few in in this field, Willie. It is a very hot day, but

:04:14. > :04:19.if there is one horse who did look a little bit warmer than most which

:04:19. > :04:24.was Treasure Beach. He was just sweating a little bit too much and

:04:24. > :04:29.of course, the other filly who is sweating is Galikova. She is

:04:29. > :04:34.sweating a bit more than you would like. She only ran in her group 1-2

:04:34. > :04:40.weeks ago and she had a toughish race that day. It is not the ideal

:04:40. > :04:44.thing to be running in a group one as the trial for another group one

:04:44. > :04:51.against older horses and colts as well.

:04:51. > :04:56.Well, the horses are about to come out for the Prix de l'Arc de

:04:56. > :05:00.Triomphe. The best race for three- year-old and over in Europe.

:05:00. > :05:03.Coming out into the course, there is a change of colours, number

:05:03. > :05:06.three, Silver Pond. It will be different to what you're seeing in

:05:07. > :05:10.the papers today, now purple and orange stripes.

:05:10. > :05:17.The runners are coming out on to the course today for the Prix de

:05:17. > :05:26.l'Arc de Triomphe of 2011. A field of 16. There is last year's winner,

:05:26. > :05:31.Workforce. Let's have a look back to St

:05:31. > :05:39.Nicholas Abbey and Joseph O'Brien wearing the black cap. A big thrill

:05:39. > :05:42.for Joseph, 18 years of age and destined to become a jump jockey

:05:42. > :05:45.and savouring every moment of his big opportunity to ride in one of

:05:45. > :05:51.the world's great races. Such a thrill for a young rider.

:05:51. > :06:01.Dropping back to number three, which is Silver Pond, 150-1

:06:01. > :06:03.

:06:03. > :06:08.outsider. Dropping back to Hiruno D'Amour from Japan. One of the of

:06:08. > :06:16.the two Japanese runners second to Sarafina. There is last year's

:06:16. > :06:20.runner-up, Nakayama Festa. A very brave second to Workforce last year

:06:20. > :06:27.and Ryan Moore having to dig very deep to repel this challenger from

:06:27. > :06:36.Japan. He has has been lively since then. So You Think, the New Zealand

:06:36. > :06:45.bred, Australian champion. He is twice the winner of the Copse Plate

:06:45. > :06:51.in Australia. He has come to Europe and won four of his five races. The

:06:51. > :06:55.hopes of many nations resting on this fellow. He was bred in New

:06:55. > :07:00.Zealand and trained in Ireland. Treasure Beach, the Irish Derby

:07:00. > :07:04.winner. That's number seven, that's Sarafinament third last year and a

:07:04. > :07:11.very unlucky third as well and since she has been out and she has

:07:11. > :07:16.come back to racing in good form. She won a race in the summer.

:07:16. > :07:26.They are making their way, a few of them are breaking off. Yellow with

:07:26. > :07:31.the dark blue cap, you will see, the winner over a distance. They

:07:31. > :07:35.have broken away now and they are making their way to the mile-and-a-

:07:35. > :07:40.half start for the the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

:07:40. > :07:44.It is worth 1.9 million to the winner, but for than that, it is

:07:44. > :07:49.worth a place in history. It is one of the greatest races in the world.

:07:49. > :07:59.The greatest in Europe. What a star line-up we have this sear.

:07:59. > :08:19.

:08:19. > :08:29.going to get the better of Seville head towards the line. Sarafina has

:08:29. > :08:31.

:08:31. > :08:36.lengths clear and he is going to win comprehensively. Reliable Man

:08:36. > :08:46.wins. And it is Galikova now who goes on

:08:46. > :08:51.

:08:51. > :09:01.in the St Ledger. And Galikova has Think and Snow Fairy really put it

:09:01. > :09:02.

:09:02. > :09:10.up to him. William Buick wants a go.

:09:10. > :09:19.It is Masked Marvel for John Gosden and William Buickment they win by

:09:19. > :09:22.was Treasure Beach, Hiruno D'Amour and Galikova, I've changed my mind

:09:22. > :09:27.and looking a the them in the paddock, the shortlist as far as

:09:27. > :09:32.I'm concerned is Workforce, So You Think, who looks magnificent and

:09:32. > :09:36.Snow Fairy. I don't know. What do you think, Willie? I would pick six

:09:37. > :09:41.horses to win the race. I'm going to go for Sarafina because she has

:09:41. > :09:47.had the best, not the best, but a perfect preparation for this race.

:09:47. > :09:51.Let's hear from the man who trains more horses in the race than anyone

:09:51. > :09:55.else, Aidan O'Brien. Aidan O'Brien ushered his three

:09:55. > :09:59.three runners down to the start. How are they taking the

:09:59. > :10:02.preliminaries? So far everything seems to be fine. It seems that So

:10:02. > :10:07.You Think is your number one hope. A mile-and-a-half, do you think

:10:07. > :10:12.that that is a trip that will suit him? We have never raced him beyond

:10:12. > :10:16.a mile and a a quarter so you are never sure. He is a horse who has

:10:16. > :10:19.plenty of pace over a mile and a quarter. It will be interesting.

:10:19. > :10:23.His run was in the Melbourne Cup over two miles. Different

:10:23. > :10:26.conditions of a race. In these races, it will be interesting to

:10:26. > :10:31.see. What's the story with Treasure

:10:31. > :10:36.Beach? Clare pointed out that he was getting warm.

:10:36. > :10:39.He does that. He is a sweater. We would be probably be more worried

:10:39. > :10:43.if he doesn't do it. That's the type of horse he is. He comes up

:10:43. > :10:47.for it when the time comes. St Nicholas Abbey is a horse that

:10:47. > :10:50.does that as well? A horse with nervous energy as well. They They

:10:51. > :10:55.seem to be fine. Aidan, best of luck, and hopefully

:10:55. > :11:03.you will be celebrating in a few minutes time.

:11:03. > :11:08.I appreciate that. Joseph O'Brien, you can see how tall his legs are.

:11:08. > :11:13.He wants to be a jump jockey. He is doing very well as a flat

:11:13. > :11:18.jockey. He wants to stick to that. If he can keep doing nine stone,

:11:18. > :11:23.why not keep going especially when he has a daddy with so many good

:11:23. > :11:28.horses. There will be a lot of horses under nine stone and above

:11:28. > :11:32.that he can ride. He could keep going for another year or maybe two.

:11:32. > :11:36.He is riding this horse here today in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. I

:11:36. > :11:43.wonder if he will be one of the horses who will be upfront. He is a

:11:43. > :11:47.horse that would actually he is a stayer and him being up the front,

:11:47. > :11:51.out of trouble, he is not a horse that you could sit in behind.

:11:51. > :11:56.Interesting. I thought they might ride him differently and drop him

:11:56. > :12:00.out. Almost ride him as if it doesn't matter. Yes, but he hasn't

:12:00. > :12:05.got the speed to help him get out of trouble. In the Arc, it is like

:12:05. > :12:09.the Derby, it is rough. Nobody gives you a quarter. Every jockey

:12:09. > :12:12.is looking after themselves. They don't care about anybody else

:12:12. > :12:17.In terms of French betting, he is coupled with So You Think and also

:12:17. > :12:27.with Treasure Beach, but with UK bookmakers you can back them

:12:27. > :12:40.

:12:40. > :12:49.individually and there are the 1. A very good price. Three-year-

:12:49. > :12:53.olds have a good record in this race, the colts and and Alain de

:12:53. > :13:01.Royer-Dupre does think a lot of this guy.

:13:02. > :13:08.It will be an interesting race. You think St Nicholas Abbey. There

:13:08. > :13:16.will be somebody ready to make the running in the Arc. It is very

:13:16. > :13:19.rarely run at a steady pace. They are hoping to get a trouble-

:13:19. > :13:22.free race with Sarafina. All we want is for everybody to get

:13:22. > :13:25.a nice, clean run. It is unlikely.

:13:25. > :13:30.It is unlikely but there is a horse, he looked magnificent in the

:13:30. > :13:40.paddock. His skin was beautiful. looks really well. If he hadn't of

:13:40. > :13:41.

:13:41. > :13:46.hung so badly in the King George, but then he ran stinking in the

:13:46. > :13:55.King George. We're in for a treat. We have a lot

:13:55. > :14:00.of class, classic type mile-and-a- half horses and So You Think

:14:00. > :14:05.possibly, he will give a good account of himself, but obviously

:14:05. > :14:15.will he be as good at mile-and-a- half as a mile mile and a quarterer

:14:15. > :14:16.

:14:16. > :14:21.and if he is, possibly he will be watching their two contenders.

:14:21. > :14:26.Jim? So the runners are in. Only one

:14:26. > :14:31.more to go forward for the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, a mile-

:14:32. > :14:37.and-a-half, Europe's richest race. And the last one going forward now.

:14:37. > :14:40.They are locked away. Ready to go now in the Prix de l'Arc de

:14:40. > :14:45.Triomphe. They are racing! And to the roar of the crowd. In the

:14:45. > :14:49.centre, one of the first away Treasure Beach, up there too

:14:49. > :14:53.Shareta going on with St Nicholas Abbey, just behind them on the

:14:53. > :14:56.inside the Japanese runner Hiruno D'Amour, settles in fourth position.

:14:56. > :15:02.They are followed by Testosterone who is in the centre, Masked Marvel

:15:02. > :15:06.is further back, followed by Reliable Man, Danedream is on the

:15:06. > :15:12.inside, Workforce in the middle of the field. Galikova on his inside,

:15:12. > :15:19.followed by Meandre, Snow Fairy back then with So You Think, in

:15:19. > :15:26.company with Sarafina, Nakayama Festa and Silver Pond is at the

:15:27. > :15:30.tail of the field. Shareta is out in front and Treasure Beach goes on

:15:30. > :15:33.from Shareta, they are two lengths to Testosterone, further back in

:15:33. > :15:38.fourth position is St Nicholas Abbey on the inside of Masked

:15:38. > :15:44.Marvel. Meandre, the white face on the outside, the yellow cap with

:15:44. > :15:47.the yellow colours in behind, Workforce, Snow Fairy further back,

:15:47. > :15:52.Sarafina is very wide. They race now towards the far edge of the

:15:52. > :15:56.course, 1,200 metres to travel, six furlongs from home. Out in front

:15:56. > :15:59.Treasure Beach from Shareta, in third is St Nicholas Abbey from

:15:59. > :16:05.Testosterone, followed then by Hiruno D'Amour on the inside of

:16:05. > :16:12.Masked Marvel, a length-and-a-half to Danedream, further back in the

:16:12. > :16:18.field is So You Think who has dropped to third last, Meandre is

:16:18. > :16:21.about -- has six runners behind him. They are followed by Galikova, then

:16:21. > :16:25.Nakayama Festa, followed by Workforce who is well back again

:16:25. > :16:29.this year. So You Think has three behind him. Silver Pond is one of

:16:29. > :16:33.them. It is now Joseph O'Brien who drives St Nicholas Abbey up in the

:16:33. > :16:36.centre to take the lead as they come to the home turn. On the

:16:36. > :16:41.inside Treasure Beach, they are followed by Shareta who is battling

:16:41. > :16:45.on well. They are followed by Danedream and out wide of them is

:16:45. > :16:49.Hiruno D'Amour, followed by Snow Fairy who is battling on well. It

:16:49. > :16:56.is anybody's race, the Arc. They race up now half-way up the home

:16:56. > :17:00.straight and now Danedream for Germany takes it up, from Shareta,

:17:00. > :17:06.followed by St Nicholas Abbey, Snow Fairy coming late and So You Think,

:17:06. > :17:11.but Danedream goes on to win the Arc. In second place is Shareta and

:17:11. > :17:16.third then Snow Fairy, followed by So You Think, came from nowhere.

:17:16. > :17:23.They were followed by St Nicholas Abbey, further back Sarafina who

:17:23. > :17:29.couldn't get into it, Silver Pond, further back Nakayama Festa and

:17:29. > :17:35.among the tailenders as they pull up Treasure Beach, Masked Marvel

:17:35. > :17:41.and Reliable Man and Workforce is among the tailenders as well. But

:17:42. > :17:47.it's Danedream who has won it for Andre Starke and also for Peter

:17:47. > :17:52.Schiergen. The second German winner of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

:17:52. > :17:56.This filly, who was third in the Italian Derby and winner of the

:17:56. > :18:02.Oaks in Italy has come good and she's won it by a street. Look at

:18:02. > :18:09.this. Danedream has won it for Peter Schiergen. In second was

:18:09. > :18:15.Shareta, who was there for a long way. In third is Snow Fairy. The

:18:15. > :18:18.former Australian champion, So You Think, has come from third last.

:18:18. > :18:22.Then St Nicholas Abbey and Meandre, they go to the line together.

:18:22. > :18:27.Meandre on the near side. Sarafina was trapped very wide early and

:18:27. > :18:32.could never get into it. Three parts of the way then is Silver

:18:32. > :18:37.Pond who ran on from a long way back. Then a long gap to the

:18:37. > :18:45.tailenders. Galikova, Olivier Peslier, Hirlas Horn for Japan, who

:18:45. > :18:52.was up there early. And behind them, Nakayama Festa in company with

:18:52. > :18:57.Workforce. And behind them was Testosterone who was handy early

:18:57. > :19:01.and dropped out. Treasure Beach, who took on a pace making role

:19:01. > :19:06.today, has tired, as you might expect to finish towards the rear.

:19:07. > :19:12.Here is the winner and we said beforehand one of the best

:19:12. > :19:22.collection of horses in Europe seen for many years, a true vintage Arc

:19:22. > :19:24.

:19:24. > :19:28.on paper. This filly, Danedream, has absolutely walked it. What a

:19:28. > :19:31.feeling this must be for you? fantastic. I don't believe it.

:19:31. > :19:38.say you don't believe it. The stands were very quiet. They

:19:38. > :19:42.couldn't believe this filly has come from out of the blue? Yes.

:19:42. > :19:49.This is the best horse that I trained in my life. First German

:19:49. > :19:53.winner since Star Appeal, how special is that for you? A good

:19:53. > :19:58.moment. Thank you. Peter Schiergen, the greatest

:19:58. > :20:05.moment of his life. A versatile filly, this. When she won the

:20:05. > :20:09.Italian Oaks it was fast ground. Here she's come on perfect good

:20:09. > :20:13.ground and Danedream has come home in front and a one-two-three finish

:20:13. > :20:16.for the fillies. Snow Fairy the best of the British coming home in

:20:16. > :20:22.third and she had no hard luck stories, Frankie Dettori got the

:20:22. > :20:25.gaps when she needed them. But an extraordinary race really because

:20:25. > :20:31.Shareta, who was there as a pacemaker for Sarafina, managed to

:20:31. > :20:39.hang on and take second place. Danedream has blown them away.

:20:39. > :20:44.it seems a strange result but this filly has won a long way. This

:20:44. > :20:50.filly has just galloped them into the ground. She's won quite a long

:20:50. > :20:54.way. And the ground is what can be described as good ground. So there

:20:54. > :20:59.is no real excuses. We didn't see horses getting knocked over. It

:20:59. > :21:07.looked a clean-run race. Everybody seemed to keep straight. This filly

:21:07. > :21:12.is obviously a very much improving three-year-old filly. I did say

:21:12. > :21:16.about three fillies finishing one- two-three but not in that recorder.

:21:16. > :21:23.Not those three! Extraordinary, and a three-year-old takes it once

:21:23. > :21:30.again. Real emotional scenes here. Germany will go mad for this. This

:21:30. > :21:36.is a real boost for their breeding, for their racing, for them in terms

:21:36. > :21:41.of sport. It's a long time since Star Appeal... 1975. Of course,

:21:41. > :21:45.German racing is going through quite a bad patch for prize money

:21:45. > :21:52.and keeping the racing going, the betting public are not betting as

:21:52. > :21:57.much as they used to. This will help German racing a tremendous

:21:57. > :22:04.amount getting to win the greatest race over a mile-and-a-half

:22:04. > :22:13.basically in the whole world. you said any one of eight horses

:22:13. > :22:23.could win this? This was not one of them. This filly, only last week,

:22:23. > :22:24.

:22:24. > :22:28.was bought by by a Japanese man, he bought a half share in her. That

:22:28. > :22:33.was money well spent! Obviously, I would imagine this filly will end

:22:33. > :22:37.up going back to Japan to be bred over there. There are a lot of

:22:37. > :22:44.perplexed faces around the paddock. People shaking their heads. One guy

:22:44. > :22:51.went, "I backed that!" Somebody from Germany had told him. There's

:22:51. > :22:59.a lot of jockeys walking in with long faces. They are wondering what

:22:59. > :23:04.the hell went on. Well, what went on was this filly, Danedream, just

:23:04. > :23:11.galloped them into the ground. She is an exceptionally good filly. Of

:23:11. > :23:16.course, she's won her last two races and she's a German filly who

:23:16. > :23:22.is doing well. The German bloodstock, even in England, is

:23:23. > :23:27.doing so much better. Breeders are always buying German fillies

:23:27. > :23:32.because they have oar the years bred -- over the years bred sound

:23:32. > :23:36.horses, horses that haven't had any problems. They are not allowed to

:23:36. > :23:46.breed in Germany unless they are 100% sound. It is all coming out

:23:46. > :23:49.

:23:49. > :23:56.now. There you have it, winning the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

:23:56. > :24:04.winner coming back now and Peter Schiergen who was one of the great

:24:04. > :24:09.riders in Germany - in fact I think one year he had more winners in his

:24:09. > :24:14.successful season than Sir Gordon Richards had in the UK. I think he

:24:14. > :24:19.had 271 winners. He's switched to training and he's obviously one of

:24:19. > :24:25.the key figures in the training ranks in Germany. This is his

:24:25. > :24:35.biggest success. The last German- trained winner was Star Appeal

:24:35. > :24:36.

:24:36. > :24:45.ridden by Greville Starkey. That horse started 119-1. Today, I think

:24:45. > :24:51.around the 27-1, 28-1 mark. The time was exceptionally fast,

:24:51. > :24:57.2:24.49. At the start, let's have a look. Have a look at Workforce in

:24:57. > :25:00.the green colours with the pink cap. He jumped away OK. Now, lying in

:25:00. > :25:03.seventh or eighth position in the centre. This is the point at which

:25:03. > :25:06.they are trying to hold position, trying to establish that position

:25:06. > :25:10.for the rest of the trip, or certainly for the next three-

:25:10. > :25:14.quarters of the race. And just at this point, Ryan Moore, in the

:25:14. > :25:19.saddle, watch him, you can see Reliable Man poking up on his

:25:19. > :25:29.inside. Meandre is on his outside. Look at this, he is the meat in the

:25:29. > :25:37.sandwich. He has had to check back out of that and that is really off-

:25:37. > :25:43.putting. That is So You Think behind him. There is Andre Starke,

:25:43. > :25:51.coming back, the winner of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. A great

:25:51. > :25:55.moment for German racing, as Willie was saying. They breed very, very

:25:55. > :26:00.good stayers, but a blend of bloodlines in recent years has

:26:00. > :26:03.meant they are turning out outstanding racehorses on the

:26:03. > :26:10.world's stage. This is one of them. Frankie Dettori there disappearing

:26:10. > :26:16.from shot. There he is. Getting a pat on the shoulder. He wishes he

:26:16. > :26:21.was there of course! There is Andre Starke, unsaddling Danedream after

:26:21. > :26:27.this memorable victory. She's a filly who has just come good. If

:26:27. > :26:33.you look back at her recent record, two starts ago she won a Group 1

:26:33. > :26:41.there by five lengths. Last time, she won by six lengths and seven.

:26:41. > :26:50.Really in great form. There's the German flag. German

:26:50. > :26:56.punters happy. So they should be. And there is winning jockey. And

:26:57. > :27:02.this is a great international race. It goes around the world. These

:27:02. > :27:05.images will be going everywhere, predominantly Germany. Here is Ed

:27:06. > :27:10.Dunlop, the trainer of Snow Fairy, talking to Clare.

:27:10. > :27:14.Snow Fairy finished third for Ed Dunlop. Slightly frustrating

:27:14. > :27:18.because third again. She's run great? We are very proud of her.

:27:18. > :27:23.She was the leading older horse in the race. The fillies one, two,

:27:23. > :27:28.three, so very pleased. She is very much an autumn-winter horse? Sure.

:27:28. > :27:31.That was only the fourth run of the year. She will, as long as she is

:27:31. > :27:36.OK, she will go back to the Japan for the race she won last year.

:27:36. > :27:40.Maybe the Japan Cup and on to Hong Kong. Let's hear from the winning

:27:40. > :27:44.jockey with Rishi. Take us through the closing stages,

:27:44. > :27:50.that must have been a dream for you? It was a dream for me to ride

:27:50. > :27:55.in this race. I know the filly wasn't a great performance, it was

:27:55. > :28:00.a very competitive race and good horses. In the last two furlongs,

:28:00. > :28:04.she kicked and I was, the last two furlongs I was dreaming. I didn't

:28:04. > :28:11.know what happened. This is a really dream come true. Many

:28:11. > :28:20.congratulations. Well done. Well, this is an incredible time, we are

:28:20. > :28:30.still checking it at the moment. We think this is faster than 1997 -

:28:30. > :28:54.

:28:54. > :28:59.2:24.49. It could be one of the is that and that is confirmed, that

:28:59. > :29:02.reinforces what a terrific performance this is from Danedream.

:29:02. > :29:07.What happened to Sarafina? What happened to So You Think? The three

:29:07. > :29:11.of them are in the line, the second line of horses. Sarafina on the

:29:11. > :29:14.outside, So You Think next to him and Workforce. You saw how he got

:29:14. > :29:18.interfered with early on in the race and we can track them through

:29:18. > :29:23.to see what happened. Sarafina, never had any trouble at all, did

:29:24. > :29:29.she? She came down the outside and didn't have the turn of foot needed.

:29:29. > :29:34.As we now know this was run in record time. So obviously they are

:29:34. > :29:37.going too fast for her and so she has come with her run-down the

:29:37. > :29:43.outside, there you can see her coming, but she is not picking up

:29:43. > :29:48.fast enough. And obviously this filly in front ran an exceptional

:29:48. > :29:52.race today. Something that she has never done before.

:29:52. > :29:56.They are coming into the weighing room and there is always a great

:29:56. > :30:03.reception for the winning jockey of the Arc. They are formally sprayed

:30:03. > :30:10.with champagne and all sorts. And Frankie gives him a big hug as

:30:10. > :30:18.well. It is interesting because Frankie and Olivier are generous to

:30:18. > :30:28.people winning big races. They know how much it means and how huge a

:30:28. > :30:28.

:30:28. > :30:33.minute it is and for someone like Andrew starky. -- Andrew Starke, in

:30:33. > :30:39.two weeks time we will be live at Ascot.

:30:39. > :30:46.You can expect to see Frankel there and Twice Over as well and a line

:30:46. > :30:51.up of stars in different divisions. After this, you can see highlights

:30:52. > :31:01.of the Super League. A fantastic match between Warrington and Leeds.

:31:01. > :31:08.The Grand Final is next weekend and Willie and I both be there.

:31:08. > :31:13.It has been an extraordinary day. I've really enjoyed todayment I'm

:31:13. > :31:17.shell shocked by how good a racehorse that Danedream is. Yes.

:31:17. > :31:20.I can't believe a filly can go and break the track record like that.
