:01:00. > :01:05.we have grey skies above Ascot Racecourse and for Ladies' Day -

:01:05. > :01:10.Gold Cup day here at Royal Ascot, umbrellas are up. That may be where

:01:10. > :01:15.most of the colour is from. The queen has a personal message in the

:01:15. > :01:20.race card. She says "as I reflect on the past 60 years much has

:01:20. > :01:25.changed for Ascot Racecourse. The eyes of all those who love horse

:01:25. > :01:30.racing are upon these beautiful surroundings upon this special week

:01:30. > :01:32.in June." The wind has been stronger as well. The four

:01:32. > :01:37.kilometres of bunting have been blowing about in the breeze. For

:01:37. > :01:44.many here, with hats and umbrellas, it may be a tricky time ahead. I

:01:44. > :01:50.suggest a big hat pin as well. People are looking magnificent. So

:01:50. > :02:00.many book their day off years in advance. There is Bruce Forsyth.

:02:00. > :02:03.

:02:03. > :02:10.Sir Steve red -- Redgrave as well. This, the prize for the best stayer

:02:10. > :02:16.on show today - that the statue of Yatess. The first and the only

:02:16. > :02:26.horse to win the Gold Cup four years in a row. Now safely retired

:02:26. > :02:27.

:02:27. > :02:32.at stud. Fame and Glory has a touch of class

:02:32. > :02:38.about him. He knows how to do this, having won it last year. This is a

:02:38. > :02:48.great day's racing and of fashion as well. This has everything.

:02:48. > :02:49.

:02:49. > :02:55.One of the most prestigious days in racing. For over 200 years, we have

:02:55. > :03:01.gathered for this distinguished race.

:03:01. > :03:08.What brings us here? The prestige. The horse racing. The fashion.

:03:08. > :03:18.The winning. Stilettos and muddy earth.

:03:18. > :03:21.

:03:21. > :03:31.The sound of hoofs past the post. Gold Cup's day. Ladies' Day. When

:03:31. > :03:34.

:03:34. > :03:38.women, like angels, like sweetly divine.

:03:38. > :03:48.Not thinking about fashion though is Hayley Turner. She has a big

:03:48. > :03:48.

:03:48. > :03:53.task ahead. She's on board a horse for the Queen in the Ribblesdale.

:03:53. > :04:03.Dettori has won the Gold Cup four times. He has picked Colour Vision

:04:03. > :04:05.

:04:05. > :04:15.from the team. Murtagh is on board Saddler's Rock.

:04:15. > :04:20.

:04:20. > :04:30.William Buick's came yesterday. He's the new ban in the Godolphin

:04:30. > :04:32.

:04:32. > :04:42.team he's on board Opinion Poll. Ryan Moore is in front. Just in

:04:42. > :04:47.

:04:47. > :04:51.jockeys are looking at. They don't really care about the crowds or the

:04:51. > :04:57.photographers and certainly not about the fashion. It is all about

:04:57. > :05:02.riding a winner? It is. For some of the top lads, the likes of Frankie

:05:02. > :05:07.Dettori, who has won winners in the 40s here, he will be desperate to

:05:07. > :05:11.get his name on the board. You are judged on your big successes. He

:05:11. > :05:17.would have experienced that feeling you get when you ride a winner on

:05:17. > :05:20.the bigger stage. He will be desperate to get it. The jockeys

:05:20. > :05:25.have been presented to the crowd. An effort being made that jockeys

:05:25. > :05:30.have a higher profile. Like swimmers and I guess motor racing

:05:30. > :05:37.drivers, - all their work is done with with helmets on and goggles.

:05:37. > :05:44.It is hard for them to forge an identity in the way that golfers do,

:05:44. > :05:49.in so much as face-time. It is great that people get a chance to

:05:49. > :05:53.see them. I think for all the lads as well a little bit of a higher

:05:53. > :05:57.profile can only help their earners. It is not glamorous, in terms of

:05:57. > :06:01.when they arrive, a lot go to the sawn that and try to sweat down to

:06:01. > :06:06.the weight they need to do today. There is someone who has come out.

:06:06. > :06:09.They will study the form. Obviously having a chat. There's a good

:06:09. > :06:13.atmosphere in there. It is serious work, this. It is very serious.

:06:13. > :06:19.Like I said, you are judged on your successes on the biggest stage.

:06:19. > :06:24.Trust me, stages don't come any bigger than here at Royal Ascot.

:06:24. > :06:28.There's Neil, he'll be happy to have a winner.

:06:28. > :06:31.Unlucky yesterday, horses didn't run up to the mark. Murtagh - no

:06:32. > :06:36.winner at this meeting. It is amazing what goes on in your head

:06:36. > :06:41.as a jockey. You have so many things to sort out - you have

:06:41. > :06:45.travel arrivals. People asking for badges. These sort of things. All

:06:45. > :06:49.you want to do is ride a winner. That is all you can think about.

:06:49. > :06:53.For you, at home, I hope you feel as if you have a badge and the best

:06:53. > :06:56.seat in the house. We are here on the BBC until the end of racing

:06:56. > :07:02.today across the three networks. This is what we've got in store for

:07:02. > :07:06.you. Tickets have been sold out for

:07:06. > :07:15.months because this is Ladies' Day - the day in which women

:07:15. > :07:18.traditionally wear their biggest, boldest and most fashionable outfit.

:07:18. > :07:22.Stamina for anyone in high heels, but for the horses negotiating the

:07:22. > :07:28.two-and-a-half miles of the Gold Cup. We sent off two ex-jockeys to

:07:29. > :07:35.test out the track. In charge of the ground, for the

:07:35. > :07:39.past 16 years here at Ascot has been Gilly, he retires after 46

:07:39. > :07:45.years in total as a groundsman. We pay him tribute.

:07:45. > :07:48.We'll will taking you to Ireland, to the yard of John Oxx to ask him

:07:48. > :07:52.and Jimmy Murtagh about the chances of Saddler's Rock in the Gold Cup.

:07:52. > :07:56.The horse talks to the camera as well!

:07:56. > :08:03.And we will ask those who ride and train runners what makes Royal

:08:03. > :08:13.Ascot so special? Six races in total. The first of

:08:13. > :08:46.

:08:46. > :08:51.them for two year olds at 2.30pm from now until nearly 6pm.

:08:51. > :08:57.A few non-runners since the declarations were made.

:08:57. > :09:04.Complicated is out of the first race.

:09:04. > :09:08.Anaconda and Star Board non-runners. Let's find out about the state of

:09:08. > :09:11.the ground after that overnight rain.

:09:11. > :09:16.We had eight-and-a-half millimetres of rain overnight. The going

:09:16. > :09:20.description yesterday was "good", today, it is good to soft. I have

:09:20. > :09:24.walked the straight course here. The perception is the straight

:09:24. > :09:29.course rises quicker. The timings yesterday suggested good to firm,

:09:29. > :09:33.as as close as you can get. The straight course will ride quicker

:09:33. > :09:38.than the round course. The round course is where the Gold Cup takes

:09:38. > :09:43.place this afternoon. Last year there was rain before Fame And

:09:43. > :09:47.Glory won the Gold Cup. Although there is some moisture on the round

:09:47. > :09:50.course I believe Fame And Glory will cope with conditions fine.

:09:50. > :09:55.Different conditions for horses on the round course this afternoon,

:09:55. > :10:00.for the horses and riders, indeed. It is a different day for the

:10:00. > :10:05.fashion. Let's find out about that now. We will not let the weather

:10:05. > :10:10.conditions deter the fashion today. The accessory of the day may be the

:10:10. > :10:17.umbrella. I will talk to top milliner steefpb Jones later on and

:10:17. > :10:21.ask him to share my broadcasting duties. Eve Pollard is with us

:10:21. > :10:26.today. It is lovely to be back, having done this gig for 23 years.

:10:26. > :10:30.You can talk us through some changes. I am sure it's very

:10:31. > :10:36.different now. In some ways it is. In some ways it's the most

:10:36. > :10:40.wonderful show on earth. The women look fabulous and even the men look

:10:40. > :10:44.more handsome in their penguin suits. In their finery. We will

:10:44. > :10:49.examine that later on. And also everybody trying to find a

:10:49. > :10:54.win and go home in profit, if they can. Nick opened his race card,

:10:54. > :10:57.pointed to a horse's name and said, this will win. You better share it

:10:57. > :11:06.with everybody. I am full of confidence after my display

:11:06. > :11:13.yesterday. I like the horse trained by Mr C oorbgs x. So Reckless

:11:13. > :11:20.Abandon in the -- --. Cox. Reckless Abandon.

:11:20. > :11:23.Hoping to do better? I am the substitute. He could not tip

:11:23. > :11:26.wheelbarrows yesterday afternoon. You have some predictions for us

:11:27. > :11:36.this afternoon. It is difficult. It is the most competitive racing in

:11:37. > :11:38.

:11:38. > :11:43.the world. What have you come up with. In the first Reckless Abandon.

:11:43. > :11:47.Cay Verde is the favourite, but I am going with Reckless Abandon. I

:11:47. > :11:52.think this ground may make the difference to the favourite. The

:11:52. > :11:57.second race is The Fuge. That was unlucky before and you would think

:11:57. > :12:02.she would have a good chance. This is like a rerun of the Oaks.

:12:02. > :12:05.Fame And Glory - this is the horse that I don't think will be beaten,

:12:05. > :12:13.especially now that if rain has come.

:12:13. > :12:18.It has scuppered the chances of a lot of his dangers. Then you have

:12:18. > :12:23.Fast Or Free. The Haggas horse, he has won twice. He's an up and

:12:23. > :12:26.coming horse. I think you will see the best racing he's run so far.

:12:26. > :12:32.Tales Of Grimm is in the Tercentenary Stakes. He's the horse

:12:32. > :12:36.I think will be winning there. It ran very well at Sandown last time.

:12:36. > :12:46.Michael Stoute has not had a winner so far. He will hopefully here

:12:46. > :12:47.

:12:47. > :12:57.today N the last race is a horse I bred myself, in the king -- King

:12:57. > :12:59.

:12:59. > :13:08.George Stakes. He is badly drawn. You have Fitzgerald to beat. I hope

:13:08. > :13:12.I get one to beat the Mick. How did you enjoy your first day at

:13:12. > :13:18.Ascot? I didn't place any bets. I think I will today. That 100,000

:13:18. > :13:20.bet yesterday was not me. It was a bit scary. Kate will help us

:13:20. > :13:26.through through the royal procession and keep you informed

:13:26. > :13:33.with all her historical tip bits about the Royal Family. Not just

:13:33. > :13:37.about our present Queen, but about monarchs from years gone by. These

:13:37. > :13:42.are the shots approaching the gates at the top of the racecourse. Very

:13:42. > :13:46.brave n the conditions, given that showers are forecast. Still we have

:13:46. > :13:50.the open carriages, so that if crowd here can get a clear look at

:13:50. > :13:55.the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. For those who have had bets on the

:13:55. > :14:05.colour of the queen's hat - mint green is the winner. The Queen

:14:05. > :14:10.wearing a pale mint green and that hat by Rachel Trevor Morgan. In the

:14:10. > :14:20.first carriage we have the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. Joining

:14:20. > :14:24.

:14:24. > :14:34.them today Sir Peter O 'Sullivan. His last commentary coming on the

:14:34. > :14:42.

:14:42. > :14:49.about that leading carriage, between them at the age is over 320

:14:49. > :14:53.years, which is not bad! It really is not. Fantastic to see them

:14:53. > :14:58.looking so well. We will be talking about Her Majesty the Queen in more

:14:58. > :15:01.detail when we have seen the other carriages. In the second carriage,

:15:01. > :15:10.we find a Royal Highness the Princess Royal. Princess Beatrice

:15:10. > :15:16.as well. The Page of Honour to the Queen between 1985 and 1987. An

:15:16. > :15:24.officer in the Welsh Guards. And also Jeremy Richardson. For many

:15:24. > :15:30.years he ran at the injured jockeys Fund. And the Princess Royal is

:15:30. > :15:34.Britain's representative on the International Olympic Committee.

:15:34. > :15:40.She competed in the Olympics, as did Captain Mark Phillips, and now

:15:40. > :15:50.their daughter, Zara Phillips. In the third carriage, we have the

:15:50. > :15:52.

:15:52. > :15:57.Duke of York's younger daughter, Princess Eugenie. Edward Toll Bar

:15:57. > :16:06.Marsh, a godson of the Prince of Wales. At the inquiry to the Queen.

:16:06. > :16:10.Charles Richards, in a black top hat. Luckily, the winds seem to

:16:10. > :16:18.have died down, otherwise hands would be to hats to keep them in

:16:18. > :16:28.place. And in carriage four, the chairman of the Hong Kong Jockey

:16:28. > :16:30.

:16:30. > :16:35.Club. His colours are well known in racing. Read Jazz, one of his, and

:16:35. > :16:41.his wife is also in there with him. You will be very familiar with

:16:41. > :16:45.those faces, Mr and Mrs Middleton, also in the carriage. The mother

:16:45. > :16:48.and father of the Duchess of Cambridge. Prince William

:16:48. > :16:55.celebrating his 30th birthday today, so he and his wife are not at the

:16:55. > :16:58.races. They got married on 24th April last year in front of 24

:16:58. > :17:02.million people watching in the UK alone. But billions worldwide

:17:02. > :17:06.watched the royal wedding. Absolutely, especially in the

:17:06. > :17:10.United States. It was an incredibly popular occasion. The romance, the

:17:10. > :17:16.beauty. It has given a massive boost to the royal family's

:17:16. > :17:20.popularity. William is number two in popularity behind the Queen. It

:17:20. > :17:23.is fascinating, a big change. Crowds young and old gathering to

:17:23. > :17:32.watch the royal procession, making sure they get their position to get

:17:32. > :17:36.a really good look. We are not daunted by rain! The Queen

:17:36. > :17:40.deliberately carrying a transparent umbrella, and actually matching the

:17:40. > :17:46.mint green. The umbrella matches everything. She has thought

:17:46. > :17:52.carefully. I have to confess I have not brought a purple umbrella. We

:17:52. > :17:56.have had an awful lot of queries for you. The more information

:17:56. > :18:01.people get, the more they want to know, which is fantastic. The Duke

:18:01. > :18:06.of Edinburgh being very animated. bet he is telling some good jokes.

:18:06. > :18:11.I think they are waving at the people on bicycles. Peter

:18:11. > :18:15.O'Sullivan deep in conversation with John Warren. The Queen today

:18:15. > :18:22.with a runner with a good chance, not necessarily a guaranteed winner.

:18:22. > :18:26.But moment Terry has a good chance in the second race. -- Momentary. A

:18:26. > :18:31.question for you, was Queen Victoria interested in racing?

:18:31. > :18:35.Queen Victoria was very keen on it. She first came to Ascot after she

:18:35. > :18:39.became Queen. Then the winner was put up on a great big blackboard so

:18:39. > :18:46.that everybody knew. She had big success with horses but she did not

:18:46. > :18:53.attend Ascot after the death of Prince Albert. She was mourning him.

:18:53. > :18:58.Was there no royal procession? It was really until her son, Edward

:18:58. > :19:03.the Seventh, became King. He instigated it again. He loved tie

:19:03. > :19:06.society. He was desperate to get out of his mother's shadow and he

:19:06. > :19:10.brought back the glamour and glitz. He would have loved Ladies' Day.

:19:10. > :19:15.There was nothing that he loved more than good-looking ladies in

:19:15. > :19:18.hats and umbrellas! Giving your study of monarchs over the years,

:19:18. > :19:28.how have the female monarchs Dyfed in the way they have presented

:19:28. > :19:32.

:19:32. > :19:39.different? The Queen Mother said that the English like queens, and I

:19:39. > :19:42.think we do. If William and Kate have a little girl, she will

:19:42. > :19:46.inherit the throne in the same way as a little boy would have done.

:19:46. > :19:50.Some of our favourite monarchs have been Queen's, including Elizabeth I

:19:50. > :19:55.and Victoria. It is a difficult job to be Queen. On the one hand you

:19:55. > :20:05.have to be a great ruler, you have to be successful, but you also have

:20:05. > :20:05.

:20:05. > :20:09.of modesty. When Elizabeth I gave that famous speech about having the

:20:09. > :20:13.body of a woman but a heart and stomach of a King, that was very

:20:13. > :20:16.important. You have to have both. Queen Victoria lost Prince Albert

:20:16. > :20:20.relatively young, and the difference is that the current

:20:20. > :20:24.Queen had the Duke of Edinburgh by her side. She is the longest

:20:24. > :20:27.married monarch. She was in love with him at the age of 13. He said

:20:27. > :20:34.they should go and jump the nets at Dartmouth Naval College. They did

:20:34. > :20:38.that and she was in love with him, no change. Jump the next? Yes,

:20:38. > :20:42.tennis nets, at 13. They were splendid. She wanted nobody else,

:20:42. > :20:49.even during the war. She had a photograph on her mantelpiece, and

:20:49. > :20:57.they were telling her that was too obvious so she disguise him with a

:20:57. > :21:01.beard. A brilliant story! Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall

:21:01. > :21:06.are meeting the Dalai Lama, so they are not here. They have had many

:21:06. > :21:10.conversations over the years. Dalai Lama is here on a ten-day tour.

:21:10. > :21:16.Prince Charles himself has made a lot of suggestions that he should

:21:16. > :21:20.be defender of faith, rather than defender of the faith. That is very

:21:20. > :21:23.interesting. I presume they are planning a great big cake for

:21:23. > :21:28.Prince William with dancing girls to jump out of it, now that he is

:21:28. > :21:38.30. Their great milestone. I have heard that they are having a low-

:21:38. > :21:41.

:21:41. > :21:44.key celebration. Were you invited? No. They lost our invitations! In a

:21:44. > :21:54.few moments we will hear the national anthem from the band of

:21:54. > :21:55.

:21:55. > :22:48.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 53 seconds

:22:48. > :22:52.its way of the racecourse. They have come up the middle. They have

:22:52. > :22:59.now got a good feel for what the ground might be like. A little bit

:22:59. > :23:03.soggy. Actually the royal procession makes sure that they

:23:03. > :23:08.plough a different furrow every day, as it were, it so that they do not

:23:08. > :23:12.wear particular trap on the course. The Queen understanding racing as

:23:12. > :23:17.deeply as she does, she knows that the carriages could be turning up

:23:17. > :23:22.the ground if they went on the same spot every time. There would be a

:23:22. > :23:27.track that you could see for miles away, especially on a day like

:23:27. > :23:32.today when the ground is softer. The royal family have always loved

:23:32. > :23:36.the rain. Queen Victoria was always dragging out the ladies in waiting

:23:36. > :23:46.in the rain. The only day the Queen does not like the rain is today,

:23:46. > :23:47.

:23:47. > :23:51.Royal Ascot. So much enthusiasm and energy, not just for the sport, but

:23:51. > :23:57.also for the entertaining side of it. The guests that appear in a

:23:57. > :24:03.royal procession Orrell by invitation personally of the Queen.

:24:03. > :24:07.asked how I can get into that, but it is just personal invitation from

:24:07. > :24:11.the Queen. She has relationships with lots of people because she

:24:11. > :24:15.just loves racing. She loves to talk about horses. Ever since she

:24:15. > :24:18.was a little girl, some of her best friends were other little girls

:24:18. > :24:22.that loved horses. It is important to her and it is marvellous that

:24:22. > :24:27.she can invite people to Windsor Castle and have a marvellous chat

:24:27. > :24:32.about horses and racing. Who knows what she thinks about Black Caviar

:24:32. > :24:39.at the weekend. That will be hugely exciting and so much interest from

:24:39. > :24:42.Australia in the fortunes of black caviar, unbeaten in 21 races so far.

:24:42. > :24:45.Hot favourite for the Diamond Jubilee Stakes, where the Queen

:24:45. > :24:54.will make the presentation, as indeed she will do after the Gold

:24:54. > :24:59.Cup. The candour of Wessex is here. -- the Countess of Wessex. She has

:24:59. > :25:02.been here every day. She is genuinely beginning to get to know

:25:02. > :25:08.people in racing quite well and enjoying it more and more.

:25:08. > :25:13.Absolutely. I think she really does enjoy it. She can enjoy it for

:25:13. > :25:18.herself. I think the royal family, many of them, are never happiest

:25:18. > :25:26.than when riding horses. Lovely to see Princess Beatrice and Princess

:25:26. > :25:31.to Janey becoming regular attendees at Royal Ascot. Striking out on

:25:31. > :25:34.their own, as they do in their own right. Princess Beatrice has

:25:34. > :25:38.finished her degree and she can look at charities and her work now.

:25:38. > :25:42.The younger generation of the royal family are coming to the fore,

:25:42. > :25:46.becoming more publicly obvious. Now the Queen it can take a back seat

:25:46. > :25:53.and give more jobs to the younger royals. The Duke of Edinburgh has

:25:53. > :25:57.been going out the pace of a 30 year-old. -- at the pace. As well

:25:57. > :26:07.as being a tremendous honour and privilege to ride in a royal

:26:07. > :26:08.

:26:08. > :26:12.possession, it is also great fun. I Sir Peter O'Sullivan is in the lead

:26:12. > :26:16.carriage, having commentated for so many years. It began with George

:26:16. > :26:21.the 4th in 1825, as a way of rewarding some of his friends. It

:26:21. > :26:25.is so important to Queens. Royal Ascot was thanks to Queen Anne. She

:26:25. > :26:30.went out riding one day and thought it was a good place for horses to

:26:30. > :26:35.go racing. The first one was in 1711 and the horses ran around

:26:35. > :26:40.bearing 12 stone, pretty heavy. It is thanks to our Queens that we

:26:40. > :26:44.have got Royal Ascot. And in her Diamond Jubilee year, the Queen is

:26:44. > :26:47.really seeing it at her best. she had a personal message in the

:26:47. > :26:51.front of the race card this year, extending a warm welcome to

:26:51. > :26:55.everybody attending Royal Ascot. She says that the best horses can

:26:55. > :26:59.be near, trained and ridden by the best in their profession, and

:26:59. > :27:03.increasingly we have competitors joining us from all over the world.

:27:03. > :27:07.That is rubber-stamping the policy of Ascot to go out and actively

:27:07. > :27:10.seek people from Australia and France and all over the world. We

:27:10. > :27:14.have often had runners from France, Ireland, Hong Kong, but

:27:14. > :27:18.particularly the Commonwealth nations. So having an Australian

:27:18. > :27:22.interest makes it even more significant. You are so right. The

:27:22. > :27:27.Commonwealth is so important to the Queen. The father saw himself as

:27:27. > :27:31.the King of an empire but she is the Queen of the Commonwealth. As a

:27:31. > :27:34.little girl she used to line up of was is outside our bedroom every

:27:34. > :27:38.night. She used to feed and water them, take off their saddles,

:27:38. > :27:41.polish them and play on her rocking-horse. She was an

:27:41. > :27:45.incredibly enthusiastic rider right from a child. It was a dream come

:27:45. > :27:48.true. When she was little she said that she would make sure that

:27:48. > :27:58.forces had arrest on Sundays and nobody should dock their pony's

:27:58. > :28:02.

:28:02. > :28:08.tale. -- horses had a rest. And she is right. Horses never race on

:28:08. > :28:14.Sundays. Thank you, cake. The horses are making their way into

:28:14. > :28:19.the paddock itself. And we have the horses lining up for the Norfolk

:28:19. > :28:24.Stakes. In terms of the big race, they have two-and-a-half miles

:28:24. > :28:34.ahead of them for the Gold Cup. Who better to assess what jockeys

:28:34. > :28:46.

:28:46. > :28:51.should do over that distance? Mick also start for the sprints, and it

:28:51. > :28:54.strikes fear that it is very uphill. This is a stiff racecourse.

:28:54. > :28:59.Especially with the sprint races and the two-year-old. It climbs all

:28:59. > :29:04.the time so you have to hang on to your horse and not let them run to

:29:04. > :29:08.three. It dips down from the 3.5, for about three-quarters of a

:29:08. > :29:14.furlong. Then it gradually climbs all the way to the winning post.

:29:14. > :29:18.This is a stiff at six. What about the draw? It does not really matter.

:29:18. > :29:23.You want to be drawn where the race will unfold, whether pacemakers and

:29:23. > :29:27.best horses of. The ground itself is nice and level and there is no

:29:27. > :29:33.bias. It is where the race unfolds. Enough about the sprints. What

:29:33. > :29:43.about the Gold Cup? Does the draw make any difference? No. Get your

:29:43. > :29:50.

:29:50. > :29:56.horse relaxed because it is two- the course, how important is it to

:29:56. > :30:00.have your horse balanced? You want to keep as close to the fence as

:30:00. > :30:04.you can. It's a long way around. Going down the hill here, this is

:30:04. > :30:08.where you have to get your horse nice and relaxed. Running down hill

:30:08. > :30:16.is easy for him. As you can see, it is a fair little drop down there

:30:16. > :30:23.and it keeps dropping all the way. When you get down there the ground

:30:23. > :30:30.starts rising again. Lowest point of the course - here

:30:30. > :30:34.at the sixth. What's going through your mind? This is where you have

:30:34. > :30:41.kept your horse relaxed. And you start to think jockey stats coming

:30:41. > :30:46.in. You think, can I wait longer or do I make ground? This is when it

:30:46. > :30:51.starts coming in. What about the Carson route? When the ground gets

:30:51. > :30:56.soft - you see all these trees here, they suck the moisture out of the

:30:56. > :31:00.ground. One race I went down there on, I went on Barry and the race

:31:00. > :31:10.stayed over there on the soft ground and I ended up winning the

:31:10. > :31:13.

:31:13. > :31:17.race. Lucky, wasn't it? This is a long bend. How do you

:31:17. > :31:21.ride it? It gos to the two-and-a-half in the

:31:21. > :31:26.straight. Basically, what you video to do is keep as close to that rail

:31:26. > :31:33.-- what you have to do is keep as close to that rail, because that

:31:33. > :31:38.will save ground. That is what the brave jockeys do. They get to that

:31:38. > :31:43.tro-and-a-half. Then they go and find out and go and -- that two-

:31:43. > :31:51.and-a-half, then they go and find out and go and win the race.

:31:51. > :31:55.So far in the week, headliner on Wednesday was Frankel. Today at

:31:55. > :32:02.3.45 it is Fame And Glory who bids to repeat his success of 12 months

:32:02. > :32:07.ago. We can look at that now. The Derek Smith colours - the purple

:32:07. > :32:12.and white. Similar conditions as we have this afternoon. A little bit

:32:12. > :32:16.of moisture in the ground. As we watch the closing stages of this,

:32:16. > :32:21.they are all to the end of their stamina limitations. It is class

:32:21. > :32:28.that gets him through. There's no doubting that.

:32:28. > :32:34.It shows you what this horse is capable of. He's quickened up in

:32:34. > :32:37.the hands of Jamie Spencer. From here on in he's plugging on. A lot

:32:37. > :32:43.of people may think he does not stay as well as some others, but

:32:44. > :32:51.look at the rest, they are trailing. There is Opinion Poll. He renews

:32:51. > :32:56.rivalry today. Yesterday he said he wanted the rain we've had overnight.

:32:56. > :33:03.What about Saddler's Rock, briefly? You are quite impressed by him?

:33:03. > :33:09.was. I just love his attitude. The worry would be the rain for him.

:33:09. > :33:12.Jimmy Murtagh, he wants genuine fast ground. He won at Doncaster

:33:12. > :33:18.last time around. There are a lot of horses in the race that deserve

:33:18. > :33:22.a mention. They do. 3.45pm. The big race today. A race that lots of

:33:22. > :33:29.horses over the years have come back and won again. Fame And Glory

:33:29. > :33:35.is favourite today and is trying for his second Gold Cup. A strong

:33:35. > :33:42.headwind which will make it harder for all those horses.

:33:42. > :33:47.The Norfolk Stakes bell going for jockeys to get their legs up.

:33:47. > :33:52.It let's take a check on the line- up for the Norfolk - our opening

:33:52. > :33:56.race of Gold Cup day. And for a change, Clare, we don't

:33:56. > :34:01.have as many runners. If you have had a bet it's been desperately

:34:01. > :34:05.hard to sort out winners this week. This is also because of the ground,

:34:05. > :34:08.a ground with ease in it. From here in the commentary position, I'm in

:34:08. > :34:15.the best place, I think, to see right down the course and to see

:34:15. > :34:22.all the action. I think we've got blenty today. The Ribblesdale, a

:34:22. > :34:32.very interesting race. Second and third in the oaks. In the mean time,

:34:32. > :34:32.

:34:32. > :35:18.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 53 seconds

:35:18. > :35:23.Is he the horse he has chosen? has ultimately chosen him. I would

:35:23. > :35:28.not split them. Mister Marc was very good. Had he chosen him he

:35:28. > :35:33.would be a 7-2 chance. They both have a very good chance. Which one

:35:33. > :35:39.- I know you said it is difficult to split. If someone asked to back

:35:39. > :35:46.one, which one would you tell them to back? Honestly, I don't know. I

:35:46. > :35:51.hope Annunciation goes well. Mister Marc, he's very fast. I honestly

:35:51. > :35:59.could not split them. I know I say that, but I could not split them.

:35:59. > :36:05.Back both of them? You do a dual- forecast. An exacter. I don't know

:36:05. > :36:07.which way around. Thanks for talking to us. Thanks. What a

:36:07. > :36:17.cracking renewal for the Norfolk Stakes.

:36:17. > :36:43.

:36:43. > :36:50.Craig Williams. Channon is the trainer. Mick thinks the world of

:36:50. > :36:56.this colt. He thinks it is the best he has trained. They are all very

:36:56. > :37:00.happy. Craig Williams gets the ride. I believe it's because the owner

:37:00. > :37:04.would like him to ride this horse, because he's done so well for him

:37:04. > :37:07.back in Australia. This owner, who is going to be the

:37:07. > :37:13.big thing in English racing, he's buying a lot of horses and you

:37:13. > :37:16.would have to think that they're going to be one of the big powerful

:37:16. > :37:21.stables in the future. It is interesting, they have two runners

:37:22. > :37:26.in this race T other one being Ahern. These colours will become

:37:26. > :37:36.very well known and the Qatarry Royal Family putting their

:37:36. > :37:36.

:37:36. > :37:40.financial and emotional effort behind British racing. They'll have

:37:40. > :37:45.hundreds of horses in a very short space of time. At the moment they

:37:45. > :37:50.have just started. They have horses in a lot of stables. They have not

:37:50. > :37:57.really, basically they haven't got a number one trainer... Yet, so far.

:37:57. > :38:05.Obviously, at the start of things, that will happen. Possibly get a

:38:06. > :38:09.lot of their horses. It is very exciting for British racing that

:38:09. > :38:14.the Qatary Royal Family are having horses here in England and enjoying

:38:14. > :38:21.it so much. All we can do is, I hope they have a very good time

:38:21. > :38:25.with the sport of horse racing. there is a horse to beat, either of

:38:25. > :38:29.the horses it may be Reckless Abandon, tipped by Willie Carson

:38:29. > :38:34.and Mick Fitzgerald. He clearly knows he has to get a shift on.

:38:34. > :38:39.Unfortunately down on the way to the start. That is a fair bit of

:38:39. > :38:43.balance from Adam Kirby. He is one of the taller jockeys. His weight

:38:43. > :38:46.shifting over there, as he struggles to keep Reckless Abandon

:38:47. > :38:53.under control. That is what happens with these babies. They have been

:38:53. > :38:56.taught to go flat out, as it were. It's always a big job with the

:38:56. > :39:01.paddock. His second ever time. There are a lot of people here

:39:01. > :39:06.today. You can see he's relaxed now. Where he is now, Clare, is very

:39:06. > :39:10.quiet down there. We get all the hustle and bustle and the noise up

:39:10. > :39:15.by the stands. When you get to the two furlongs and down to the six,

:39:15. > :39:21.it is very, very quiet. These two year olds will walk this last

:39:21. > :39:25.section. We will pick up a few other runners. This is Cay Verde -

:39:25. > :39:31.this is the favourite. A little shifting coming up. We'll have loot

:39:31. > :39:36.look at it. As Craig Williams just said, right, we'll trot down

:39:36. > :39:40.beautifully, lovely trotting style. He's letting the horse dictate to

:39:41. > :39:47.him when he wants to break into the trot and canter. Let the horse do

:39:47. > :39:52.it on your own and you will go down there slower. Those are very smart

:39:52. > :39:56.colours. The smartest and the most prestigious colours to wear are the

:39:56. > :40:02.colours of Her Majesty the queen. They will be carried by Hayley

:40:02. > :40:08.Turner. Hayley Turner will be the first

:40:08. > :40:18.women to bid to ride a winner at Royal Ascot for a since a long time

:40:18. > :40:29.

:40:29. > :40:36.last time the queen won the Ribblesdale stake was 1995, Dettori

:40:36. > :40:43.was on board. What chance do you think you'll have today? She has

:40:43. > :40:47.great form, obviously from Newbury - a messy race. A lot of fillies

:40:47. > :40:52.that ran in that race have come out and tried to prove themselves again.

:40:52. > :41:00.A lot could put a line through it. No, her form is there. She's fresh

:41:00. > :41:04.and well. She's - yeah, there's no reason why she couldn't. What is it

:41:04. > :41:08.like donning the royal silks in jubilee year? It is a huge honour.

:41:08. > :41:13.I am very lucky to have been associated with the filly from the

:41:13. > :41:18.start and get a ride on her. I am hugely grateful. Are you used by,

:41:18. > :41:23.by you, seeing Her Majesty in the paddock and chatting with her or do

:41:24. > :41:28.you get butterflies and on your Ps and Qs? Yes, obviously. It is very

:41:28. > :41:33.nice to be out there. She is very relaxed and loves to talk about her

:41:33. > :41:43.horses. She's very knowledgeable. I have met her a few times now. I'm

:41:43. > :41:52.

:41:52. > :41:58.getting into a routine. I disturbed mention Annunciation, not because I

:41:58. > :42:04.think he has a big chance, but also because he was bred by the students

:42:04. > :42:07.of Oxford Brooks. It is their graduation day today. They will be

:42:07. > :42:14.watching and cheering on Annunciation. Not without a chance

:42:14. > :42:20.either. As we've heard from the handling

:42:20. > :42:25.camp, they don't know which is the best horse. That is always in the

:42:25. > :42:35.race ing - if you cannot choose which one is the best, it means

:42:35. > :42:35.

:42:35. > :42:44.both are none good. Joesy O'Brien on board Gale Force Ten.

:42:45. > :42:54.It is his second runner it since 2007. Not a race he often targets.

:42:55. > :42:57.

:42:57. > :43:02.It is unusual, the breeding of Gale Force Ten. By Oasis Dream and

:43:02. > :43:06.Kirkwell was a mile-and-a-half. You have to think when it gets to six

:43:06. > :43:15.and seven and one mile, it will be a better horse. He ran over six

:43:15. > :43:21.last time. He's dropping back in distance today. I would say, on its

:43:21. > :43:25.pedigree, they are taking a chance running it over five furlongs. This

:43:25. > :43:31.shower of rain will help its cause. Look at the neck and shoulder on

:43:31. > :43:35.Mister Marc. Strong. He look like a three-year-old in the paddock. Very

:43:35. > :43:39.mature for his age. Another one dropping back from six furlongs to

:43:39. > :43:43.five. They have to be sharp off the mark here, because with a lot of

:43:43. > :43:49.two year olds some trainers do it more than others at home in terms

:43:49. > :43:52.of putting them in the stalls but in Australia they have barrier

:43:52. > :44:02.trials, so they work out of stalls before they get on a racecourse and

:44:02. > :44:10.

:44:10. > :44:15.start having money put on them. you make of this race, Jim? Well, I

:44:15. > :44:22.think Clare, that Cay Verde will be the one to beat. The reports are

:44:22. > :44:27.very, very good. The winner of his last two starts,

:44:27. > :44:37.and purchased by the Qatar racing Limited. So, they are moving

:44:37. > :44:43.

:44:43. > :44:50.forward. The last couple for this Ahern. Storm Moon on the near side

:44:50. > :44:55.in the early stages. In the centre, followed by Mister Marc. Further

:44:55. > :45:00.back in the field, Jubilee Brig. In that bunch is Gale Force Ten.

:45:00. > :45:06.Change of colours on Ian's Dream. Tracking them is Ahern. On the near

:45:06. > :45:15.side, the leader of his Cay Verde. In the black cab in the centre is

:45:15. > :45:19.Reckless Abandon. They start to merge, the two groups. Coming up to

:45:19. > :45:27.a furlong and a half. Gale Force Ten is in a look. Reckless Abandon

:45:27. > :45:33.running erratic live. Cay Verde, Morawij. It is Reckless Abandon, in

:45:33. > :45:42.the centre. Down the far side... They hit the line and it is very

:45:42. > :45:47.close. Riders abandon and Gale Force Ten and Ian's Dream. Just

:45:47. > :45:52.behind them Ahern and Cay Verde. Further back Ocean Applause. Storm

:45:53. > :45:57.Moon. Annunciation at the tail of the field. This caused ran so

:45:57. > :46:02.erratic live. Look how wide apart they are. Near side, he has won

:46:02. > :46:09.comfortably in the end and you can see it from this angle. That is

:46:09. > :46:13.Reckless Abandon. He has won over Gale Force Ten. Close third is

:46:13. > :46:21.Ian's Dream. Different colours to what was shown in the Racing Post.

:46:21. > :46:31.In green. On the near side, Morawij in the yellow. Bertie Aherne miss

:46:31. > :46:31.

:46:31. > :46:39.the start of his run. Cay Verde was on the wrong side, really. They

:46:39. > :46:49.were clear of Ocean Applause. Mister Marc has not run his race

:46:49. > :46:50.

:46:50. > :46:55.today. He was very close to the others previously. Clive Cox has

:46:55. > :46:59.trained the winner. That is Reckless Abandon. He raced so

:46:59. > :47:05.erratic live. Goodness knows how far he would have gone if he had

:47:05. > :47:13.gone straight. He was violently to his left. Adam Kirby, being

:47:13. > :47:23.congratulated by Clive Cox. His 9th win of the season. Adam Kirby's 14.

:47:23. > :47:37.

:47:37. > :47:44.Reckless Abandon was the 4-1 winner. Fours, 16th 8. This is the first

:47:44. > :47:47.Royal Ascot winner for Adam Kirby. It is the first time Clive Cox has

:47:47. > :47:50.been successful in a two-year-old race. This colt has lots of ability

:47:51. > :47:55.but stop look at him veering to the left, despite Adam Kirby having the

:47:55. > :48:00.whip in his left hand. He is trying to keep him straight. He does not

:48:00. > :48:03.get any further to the rail. When he came across the front of Neil

:48:03. > :48:07.Callan, it was a worrying moment for those that have backed Reckless

:48:07. > :48:13.Abandon, following the advice from Willie Carson and Mick Fitzgerald.

:48:13. > :48:17.They were right. Yes. He did exactly the same when he beat

:48:17. > :48:22.Annunciation at Doncaster. This is a bigger track than Doncaster, so

:48:22. > :48:29.we have to go across a little bit. Adam Kirby with his stick in the

:48:29. > :48:36.left hand. He cannot go over the rail now because he is right hard

:48:36. > :48:40.up against it. I believe it is an American stallion. He is from a

:48:40. > :48:47.mare that is all his speed. He is bred to be a five or six furlong

:48:47. > :48:52.horse. I imagine this horse will be taking it very fast in two-year-old

:48:52. > :48:59.races. An amazing performance. We will talk later about why horses

:48:59. > :49:04.might do that. We will look at that with our analysis team. Adam Kirby

:49:04. > :49:11.coming in on board Reckless Abandon, still full of running. No energy

:49:11. > :49:21.wasted there! Just nervous. His heart rate will be very high at the

:49:21. > :49:26.

:49:26. > :49:32.moment. That time is actually 2.24 seconds slower than the Queen Mary

:49:32. > :49:41.yesterday. That indicates exactly how the rain has got into the

:49:41. > :49:46.ground on this course. When they are wide apart like that, it looks

:49:46. > :49:51.like it is much closer, of course. They were all over the shop there.

:49:51. > :49:55.They were stretched right across the track in a furlong. Eight of

:49:55. > :50:01.them in a line. Two of three different groups and I do not think

:50:01. > :50:06.it was helping the inexperienced youngsters. Especially the winner.

:50:06. > :50:16.If he had had a bit of company, he might have won by further.

:50:16. > :50:17.

:50:17. > :50:21.Certainly company for longer. He needed it. He really did need that.

:50:21. > :50:31.Let's check the full result of our first race on day three, the

:50:31. > :50:32.

:50:32. > :50:41.Norfolk Stakes. Good weather for Clive Cox. Reckless Abandon wins.

:50:41. > :50:45.There was a 5,000 bet on Reckless Abandon and well done to them.

:50:46. > :50:52.Force Ten has run well on the far side. Ian's Dream not far away as

:50:52. > :51:02.well. Morawij finished 4th. Another one that needed a bit more company

:51:02. > :51:06.

:51:06. > :51:12.for longer. Cay Verde was another one. It did not help that they did

:51:13. > :51:17.not have these for long enough. Reports from jockeys that have come

:51:17. > :51:23.in, saying it is on the soft side of good. I suppose that time

:51:23. > :51:31.indicates that as well. Clive Cox is the winning trainer for a good

:51:31. > :51:35.team. He is here now. Yes, his third Royal Ascot winner. This has

:51:35. > :51:40.given you some butterflies in the closing stages. Just a bit! He did

:51:40. > :51:44.it on his first start. He is still a bit green. In a normal spring he

:51:44. > :51:48.would have had a couple of runs. Over the moon. A great team effort

:51:49. > :51:51.to have the horse here in this kind of order. I'm delighted for its

:51:51. > :51:58.Stephen Farrow and Julie dead men, because they have been great

:51:58. > :52:02.supporters. The ability that he has shown, winning despite wandering

:52:02. > :52:06.about, it gives you encouragement and excitement for the future.

:52:06. > :52:10.is talented, very talented. This guy has done a grand job on him on

:52:10. > :52:15.both counts and we are very proud of him. He is doing a good job.

:52:15. > :52:21.Well done. You hang on to run in the closing stages. What happened

:52:21. > :52:25.on your perspective? -- you hung on to home. I just felt him. I just

:52:25. > :52:29.felt him. I had my stick in my left because I wanted to bring him over

:52:29. > :52:33.to the right to keep him away from the crowd on the left. When you won

:52:34. > :52:39.last time he just runs around. He is just a big baby. He just ran

:52:39. > :52:45.left straight away. It was very special. Is it possible to work out

:52:45. > :52:50.just how much ground his erratic behaviour cost to? Too much!

:52:50. > :52:55.too much for the horses behind you. He has given away a lot of ground

:52:55. > :53:00.when he does that. But it will be sorted, yes. How much improvement

:53:00. > :53:05.does he have in him? In it is just being green. Most of my horses

:53:06. > :53:09.improve with racing. He has that tendency. He knows that we are on

:53:09. > :53:12.the track again. In a normal spring we would have had a couple of runs

:53:12. > :53:19.under our belt, but this year we have had to come here a little bit

:53:19. > :53:24.more, you know, that is the way we are. Your first win at Royal Ascot.

:53:24. > :53:30.What does it mean? A lot. I thought he was coming here with a great

:53:30. > :53:37.chance. Now that he has won, I am delighted. Well done to both of you.

:53:37. > :53:43.Congratulations. A very fast pace in our first race of the day. One

:53:43. > :53:47.of them missed the start and got hampered. Ahern comes here. He

:53:48. > :53:54.jumps around. There is a slight concertina effect. The horse in

:53:55. > :54:01.nine it comes out. He shifts to the left of your screen. It just means

:54:01. > :54:09.that a whole bunch of them get in front of Ahern, which is his chance

:54:09. > :54:13.gone. Yes. There is no comeback in these speed races. He is only a

:54:13. > :54:21.young horse. Only his second racecourse appearance. This is him

:54:21. > :54:26.in the closing stages. This is Morawij. Neil Callan on the extreme

:54:26. > :54:30.right. He gets slightly hampered. Both of these, one furlong further,

:54:30. > :54:34.you still want to be interested in them despite defeat today. I spoke

:54:34. > :54:38.to Neil Callan when he came back in. I think his face tells the story.

:54:38. > :54:42.He is gutted because his horse ran an absolute blinder and got beaten.

:54:42. > :54:47.He thought he was getting the upper hand with the horse on his right,

:54:47. > :54:50.but when they came across it did not help them. He just felt he was

:54:50. > :54:54.unlucky on the day. And he is marooned in the middle. He has

:54:54. > :54:58.nothing to raise with. The horse is trying its best. He might be able

:54:58. > :55:01.to find a bit more but there is no reason to do so because there is

:55:02. > :55:09.nothing to get past. The winner had the rail to guide them all the way

:55:09. > :55:13.home. Morawij and Ahern, beaten today but they still have futures.

:55:13. > :55:17.An extra furlong might help them. The presentation is being made by

:55:17. > :55:25.Katherine Jenkins, who sang the national anthems are beautifully on

:55:25. > :55:30.Derby day. Stephen Farrow, the owner of Reckless Abandon.

:55:30. > :55:32.Receiving that trophy. Clive Cox paying tribute to them in terms of

:55:32. > :55:36.supporting them through the training career. That always helps

:55:36. > :55:40.when you have got owners that can cope with the bad times as well as

:55:40. > :55:45.the good ones and are fun to be around. Katherine Jenkins, only 23

:55:45. > :55:50.when she signed her UK classical recording deal. The biggest deal

:55:50. > :55:55.ever done. Was it? What about that hat? Would you like one. It is like

:55:55. > :56:01.an umbrella. I would like one like that. We can get you one as well

:56:01. > :56:05.and you can make, it's just like that with the fashion team! News

:56:05. > :56:14.just in with Frankel. They have given him a new rating. 140. Well

:56:14. > :56:20.done! In a modern day ratings, the highest ever was 141. Frankel could

:56:20. > :56:26.set a new record. I think he will. Black Caviar might be impressive on

:56:26. > :56:33.Saturday, and her racing will go up as well. She was four behind him,

:56:33. > :56:37.134 when he was 138. She cannot skip him. She cannot but it is

:56:37. > :56:41.really impressive. The competition in the race is not good enough for

:56:41. > :56:48.her to go up by that amount. They will have to do the ratings on what

:56:48. > :56:53.she beats and by how much. I would say on the race on Saturday, the

:56:53. > :56:57.competition is not as strong as people like myself would like. We

:56:57. > :57:00.would like her to be up against the real stars. We have got confirmed

:57:00. > :57:06.runners for the Diamond Jubilee, 15 of them, and Black Caviar are drawn

:57:06. > :57:12.15 of 15. We will talk about that race later in the afternoon. Let's

:57:12. > :57:16.look at the fashion with Suzi Perry. We're just looking around the Royal

:57:16. > :57:21.Enclosure, which is a bit different. None of this was here when I was

:57:21. > :57:25.doing this. It was all fields. weather is being kind. It is. For

:57:25. > :57:31.many years I did it addressed perfectly from top to bottom, with

:57:31. > :57:37.Wellington boots at the bottom! -- dressed perfectly. Let's have a

:57:37. > :57:44.look at how it was when you were here. Helen looked delightful, too,

:57:44. > :57:51.in one of the big colours of this year, blue. An Austrian effect with

:57:51. > :57:55.an embroidered back and a big bow. I hope that is somebody that he is

:57:55. > :57:59.closely related to! The Leopards in effect and the disco effect. I

:57:59. > :58:05.rather like the outfit on the right. A belt with bullets like she is

:58:05. > :58:12.going on safari. This is the Spanish look. She could take off

:58:12. > :58:16.any of those different levels and shorten and length and her dress.

:58:16. > :58:22.Do you know what a are a is? It is a short skirt like the Mini skirts

:58:22. > :58:27.of the 60s but with frills. It is based on the cheerleaders of

:58:27. > :58:33.America. They are short. That is what interests most men but they

:58:33. > :58:38.are very fashionable. I love that! It is straight out of Dynasty.

:58:38. > :58:45.you can see, I was prematurely blond! The fashion was so different.

:58:45. > :58:49.Bobbies do that was the 80s. shoulder pads, the power dressing,

:58:49. > :58:53.then it in skirts, all made for a spot, if you think about it. This

:58:53. > :58:57.is black and white. That is traditional for Ladies' Day. You're

:58:57. > :59:01.quite cheeky with your comments. was so different then. No cameras

:59:01. > :59:07.were allowed at ground level because so many really nice uncles

:59:07. > :59:10.took their very pretty nieces and did not want to be filmed at Ascot.

:59:10. > :59:15.Everything was shot from the road. You could not actually go up to

:59:15. > :59:19.somebody and say hello. When I say I hope that man is related to her,

:59:19. > :59:23.there were all sorts of naughty things going on. You had to

:59:23. > :59:29.broadcast for 10 or 15 minutes on your own, just commenting on what

:59:29. > :59:34.you saw. Idea of heaven, most women's idea of heaven! You can say

:59:34. > :59:38.what you like. The BBC said to me before I started that I was not to

:59:38. > :59:43.get them sued. So if somebody turned up in pink and screaming

:59:43. > :59:48.white, and green spots, I had to say it was very brave. At the

:59:48. > :59:52.beginning, when I started, there were no DVDs. Nobody really saw

:59:52. > :59:55.what you were doing. Their friends might have seen it at home. Ones

:59:55. > :00:05.everybody got videos, they all watched and then they said the next

:00:05. > :00:08.

:00:08. > :00:13.day, I love what you said about my there, Ascot, apart from the racing

:00:13. > :00:18.which is so terrific - it is about people watching? And behaving very

:00:18. > :00:23.badly. For example, jockeys. I don't want to go into this too

:00:23. > :00:28.deeply about why women might fancy jockeys, but they did. I would go

:00:28. > :00:32.to many of the great jockeys at the time and they were sent button

:00:32. > :00:36.holes and the more expensive and rarer the orchid, the richer the

:00:36. > :00:44.woman was or maybe her husband was. They were pursued. Really quite

:00:44. > :00:49.interesting. They had their own stalkers? Absolutely. At the time

:00:49. > :00:53.people would dress up to get photographed by the papers. For a

:00:53. > :00:58.while, Ascot is where you came if you wanted to get your picture in

:00:58. > :01:05.the papers. You would dress up and all the film stars would come, even

:01:05. > :01:10.ones from America, to be filmed here. Did you find, even then,

:01:10. > :01:15.there was a commercial aspect, that people would dress up to advertise

:01:15. > :01:23.things. Sometimes not subtlety. There were a raft of girls who came

:01:23. > :01:31.in St. Trinian's outfits, that is when they got strike, as they have

:01:31. > :01:37.-- strict, as they have this year. Julian Wilson, who worked here for

:01:37. > :01:42.many years - it's his birthday. Happy birthday. Her Majesty, the

:01:42. > :01:51.Queen has made her way into the paddock and will chat to the

:01:51. > :01:59.trainer of movement movement. Her runner in the Ribblesdale.

:01:59. > :02:06.Whatever any filly does this week, the superstar mare of the week is

:02:06. > :02:16.Black Caviar. On Saturday it is a six-furlong sprint. We have 15

:02:16. > :02:17.

:02:17. > :02:20.runners for it. The odds-on- favourite is Black Caviar.

:02:20. > :02:30.Moonlight Cloud is the second favourite. We have last year's

:02:30. > :02:37.winner, Society Rock, at 9-1. They are very good, consistent

:02:37. > :02:41.trainers. They are 20 and upwards because Black Caviar is such a

:02:41. > :02:48.short price. I wonder if she will shorten up? I will hand you over to

:02:48. > :02:58.John. He has a man who knows all about Black Caviar.

:02:58. > :02:59.

:02:59. > :03:03.You are from Australian TV. What is Black KaveVy yar -- -- Caviar.

:03:03. > :03:08.is the best in our part of the world. She's up there with the best

:03:08. > :03:14.horses in the world. A great effort by the team to binge her to this

:03:14. > :03:19.Royal Meeting. She's won 21 on the trot. Going for 22 on Saturday.

:03:19. > :03:25.When did the Australian public realise they have a superstar?

:03:25. > :03:29.or six runs in. It was the whole package, the trainer, the jockey

:03:29. > :03:35.and the significance of the colours, of the names. It's quite a unique

:03:35. > :03:44.experience. She's becoming a punting phenomenon back home as

:03:44. > :03:50.well. How much have they had on? Sydney one-and-a-half million

:03:50. > :04:00.Australian dollars. Some of the biggest punters in Australia are

:04:00. > :04:01.

:04:01. > :04:06.taking the shortest ods, as short as 20-1. Keeping tickets as

:04:06. > :04:13.momentos. It goes back to the industry. There's the Federation

:04:13. > :04:23.Square, is it 1am? 12.45am. This morning in Melbourne, it was

:04:23. > :04:24.

:04:24. > :04:29.snowing in the other suburbs. Three Celsius. People will be cheering on

:04:29. > :04:37.watching here. There is a black cab? He has called it the Black

:04:37. > :04:43.Caviar. He has been taking owners around the functions here. Back

:04:43. > :04:51.home in Australia you see the trend-setting. 2-7 - that's luxury

:04:51. > :04:55.odds. Will she win? She will win. It will not be a Frankel-like

:04:55. > :05:00.demolition it doesn't have to be. Make sure we cap off this wonderful

:05:00. > :05:07.week. On to her at the weekend. 7,500

:05:07. > :05:11.Australians here with tickets. They would think 2-7 is the most

:05:11. > :05:16.attractive price. The last starts she's been 20's on. An

:05:16. > :05:20.extraordinary price. I can't wait to see it. Nor can I. We will learn

:05:20. > :05:30.more about her when we see her on the racecourse here in the UK for

:05:30. > :05:31.

:05:31. > :05:41.the first time. She's won 21 races in a row. She's unbeaten. She's

:05:41. > :06:10.

:06:10. > :06:14.broken the ten second barrier. I would not necessarily... I could

:06:14. > :06:19.get called Nelly the elephant, before anyone else says it.

:06:19. > :06:22.said about going to the beach. That's quite normal for a lot of

:06:22. > :06:27.Australian horses because they train near the sea and it's hot

:06:27. > :06:31.weather. A lot of trainers do like to take their horses down and, you

:06:31. > :06:36.know, to the beach and let the horses have a paddle. Some horses

:06:36. > :06:41.do swim. They go for a swim in the sea. They do enjoy it. You saw that

:06:41. > :06:47.shot of her there in the Lycra suit. You might have wondered what that

:06:47. > :06:57.was, that is what she travelled over in. It is like wearing the

:06:57. > :07:02.

:07:02. > :07:08.socks on the plane for deep vein. Momentary has a great chance. The

:07:08. > :07:13.Queen's filly, who will be ridden by Hayley Turner. There she is, in

:07:13. > :07:23.the Queen's colour. Now she has got those famous colours on. Talking of

:07:23. > :07:23.

:07:23. > :08:03.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 53 seconds

:08:03. > :08:13.colour, this is what it looks like deal's stakes.

:08:13. > :08:14.

:08:14. > :09:24.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 53 seconds

:09:24. > :09:31.here for this the Ribblesdale. The owner, for whom she is riding - Her

:09:31. > :09:36.Majesty the queen and John Warren and Hayley Turner explaining what

:09:36. > :09:46.she thinks might happen in this race and the trainer of this filly,

:09:46. > :09:52.whose form is turning out well. Shirocco Star lines up again today.

:09:53. > :09:59.It is the Irish filly... My word - that was bad positioning from me,

:09:59. > :10:03.right next to the bell. That is the signal for Hayley Turner to leave

:10:03. > :10:11.that gathering. There are the princesses there and the Princess

:10:11. > :10:16.Royal, all hoping this filly lives up to expectations. Ran as well as

:10:16. > :10:19.Charlton House yesterday. Amongst the opposition, Michael Hill is

:10:19. > :10:26.making his way through there, riding for Charlie. He's looking

:10:26. > :10:36.for his first Royal Ascot winner. Very famous colours here.

:10:36. > :10:41.Roger Charlton going across to give Pat Smullen, sorry James Doyle,

:10:41. > :10:46.James Doyle doing so well. A lot of how these fillies look on

:10:46. > :10:51.the day. It's been a very difficult spring because they are sensitive

:10:51. > :10:55.to the weather changes and with so much rain around and not enough sun

:10:55. > :11:00.to bring their coats out, the best clues are from what they look like

:11:00. > :11:10.in the paddock. We start by talking about The Fuge,

:11:10. > :11:14.who is wondering around us now. -- who is wandering around us now.

:11:14. > :11:20.Normally the Oaks fillies are normally tired. We have an extra

:11:20. > :11:26.week this year... 20 days. They have an extra bit of time to get

:11:26. > :11:31.over their exertions at Epsom. And The Fuge, she is, well we saw what

:11:31. > :11:34.happened, she finished third in the Oaks. Everybody said she was so

:11:34. > :11:38.unlucky because she met interference after a furlong-and-a-

:11:38. > :11:48.half. Everybody will think she has a great chance. I do myself,

:11:48. > :11:51.

:11:51. > :11:55.actually. OK, a horse who has ability, number six, Kailani.

:11:55. > :12:00.looks disinterested in what's going on in the paddock. There's another

:12:00. > :12:10.one who ran at Epsom in the Oaks and found interference and they

:12:10. > :12:18.expect a belter run. Number 14, Vow. They said she did not handle Epsom.

:12:18. > :12:21.She looks in great nick. She is small, she is stocky, strong and

:12:21. > :12:31.she looks in good order with herself.

:12:31. > :12:38.What about this for a musical line up Lord Lloyd Webber and Catherine

:12:38. > :12:44.Jenkins. The big question is - what is The Fuge? A musical... The Ascot

:12:44. > :12:50.authority does not give us a piano here when we could have

:12:50. > :12:56.demonstrated it. I backed it any way. She did look unlucky in the

:12:56. > :12:59.Oaks? Well, who knows what happens there. One's lips are sealed. It is

:12:59. > :13:05.a strong field today. I would be really pleased if she does all

:13:05. > :13:09.right. It is fantastic to see you. You are becoming a regular at the

:13:09. > :13:15.races? It is my first time on Ladies' Day. I have brought my mum

:13:15. > :13:23.and sister. We're having a brilliant time. You will watch this

:13:23. > :13:28.with Lord Lloyd Webber. I will. She's my talisman. The favourite

:13:28. > :13:35.for this race is The Fuge. We will look at two bits of film. The first

:13:35. > :13:39.bit is the reason she lost the race. She is in the centre there. You see,

:13:39. > :13:44.she has at this stage basically four horses ahead of her. In the

:13:44. > :13:50.next eight seconds, that is about to go horribly wrong. The Fuge

:13:50. > :14:00.becomes the meat in the sandwich. She is squeezed out. You can see

:14:00. > :14:07.

:14:07. > :14:11.William Buick does well. She almost unbalanced and she's at the back of

:14:11. > :14:14.the field. Now, the thing to remember, for all of these horses

:14:14. > :14:18.in the Oaks, this is and will forever be the biggest race of

:14:18. > :14:21.their lives. So nobody's giving anybody any inch of ground. Here

:14:21. > :14:26.she is now having to make her ground, coming from the back there.

:14:26. > :14:29.There's star star star and there is Vow. They are all renewing rivalry

:14:30. > :14:34.today. Here is how far The Fugue is back and how much ground she has to

:14:34. > :14:40.make up. She's having to make ground all the time in the race.

:14:40. > :14:50.This is a crucial point in the race where the camera is at its worst

:14:50. > :15:00.

:15:00. > :15:05.position. She gets unbalanced here. Epsom but this was particularly so,

:15:05. > :15:10.got stopped twice. Shirocco Star is ahead of her there

:15:10. > :15:14.and Vow in the light blue in the next position. She won three races

:15:14. > :15:21.in the space of five weeks though and now she's back here so it's not

:15:21. > :15:31.an easy task. It's not. Let's see how she gets on.

:15:31. > :15:52.

:15:52. > :15:55.It's sometimes dangerous to assume that when a filly looks unlucky in

:15:55. > :16:02.a race she'll turn around the form with the ones that finished in

:16:02. > :16:06.front of her. If you take her win, she has good form and she looked as

:16:06. > :16:12.though she'd finish closer. She has the most beautiful long stride. A

:16:12. > :16:20.lovely filly. Might look a little bit lighter than at Epsom, but her

:16:20. > :16:24.win at York was very, very good when she won there. Her form in the

:16:24. > :16:30.Guineas as well. She wasn't beaten too far in. That is class form, you

:16:30. > :16:33.know, a classic. Then she was unlucky, not beaten too far at

:16:33. > :16:39.Epsom. Let's have a quick look at Vow. Good form here coming from the

:16:39. > :16:47.Oaks in which she finished fourth. Won her first two start bfrs that.

:16:48. > :16:54.Bred by Brian Haggis, the father of William who trains her -- before

:16:54. > :16:57.that. They won this race once, a 20-1 shot. She's looking up there,

:16:57. > :17:02.she must have spotted a plane coming out of Heathrow. Spotted

:17:03. > :17:08.something in the air. But she's a very attractive filly, very strong.

:17:08. > :17:18.What are they doing here? Putting on the Monty Roberts. Oh, yes to go

:17:18. > :17:26.in the stalls. This is Pink Damsel. She's clearly got loose - oh, no,

:17:26. > :17:30.looks as if Jamie Spencer's there with her. A saddle problem or

:17:30. > :17:35.leathers. He's doing something with his lethest. That's the

:17:35. > :17:39.photographer helping out. They are only by the furlong marker there --

:17:39. > :17:45.leathers. His leather's obviously come out of the pin. It's OK now.

:17:45. > :17:49.Now he needs to get a leg up now. Oh. He doesn't want to get a leg up.

:17:49. > :17:57.I think he's going to run along with her. We may have a little bit

:17:58. > :18:03.of a delay here. Here we go. Here's the head girl for Roger putting him

:18:03. > :18:10.up. She'll sort him out, tell him what to do. She's a tough girl.

:18:10. > :18:16.Whoops. Let's join Rishi. We have the chance to get a word with the

:18:16. > :18:19.trainer of Kailani now. A disappointing performance in the

:18:19. > :18:25.Oaks but were there mitigating circumstances? Everything went

:18:25. > :18:31.against her, we thought it would be a nice pace. We thought the

:18:31. > :18:37.decision was to ask her when was the right time to finish. They were

:18:37. > :18:41.just slow, it didn't work. We will just forget that race, yes. How has

:18:41. > :18:45.she been since then? Is she over her exertions from Epsom? Yes,

:18:45. > :18:55.she's in good form and doing everything in the right way and I'm

:18:55. > :18:55.

:18:55. > :19:02.really happen by her. She worked well last week. This filly still

:19:02. > :19:07.has the class. We always believe that. She's shown something. She

:19:07. > :19:10.deserves a chance today. When she won aleyed race at Newmarket, she

:19:11. > :19:16.won it in soft ground, so the overnight rain very much to her

:19:16. > :19:22.advantage? Yes, I agree. To be honest, if she's good, she'll so us

:19:22. > :19:27.today, no excuses there. Thank you very much. All the best.

:19:27. > :19:34.A quick update on Pink Damsel. Safely there but clearly quite

:19:34. > :19:39.wound up, suiting and got herself in a state. Let's have a look at

:19:40. > :19:45.Shirocco Star. She finished closest to the winner. She's got herself a

:19:45. > :19:51.bit fractious. She's always like that, Clare. She's a bit of a girl

:19:51. > :19:55.and she gets herself very excited. This is very normal for her so I

:19:55. > :20:00.wouldn't worry too much about this. I remember Rishi said things at

:20:00. > :20:10.Epsom about her getting too excited. Complete contrast in attitude and

:20:10. > :20:12.

:20:12. > :20:17.temperament, Momentary being very calm and she looks a sweet filly.

:20:17. > :20:26.Her Majesty the Queen bred this horse and Hayley Turner is trying

:20:26. > :20:31.to be the second lady to win a race at the Royal meeting. A few more

:20:31. > :20:35.going forward now. In terms of how you think the race will pan out,

:20:35. > :20:39.Willie, how do you read it? Interesting to see what the jockeys

:20:39. > :20:42.do in this case. I don't think they'll pile down on the inside

:20:42. > :20:46.rail because the ground on the round course will be a lot slower

:20:46. > :20:50.than it is on the straight course. So I would imagine the ground's

:20:50. > :20:55.going to be soft where they are going down. They might fan out a

:20:55. > :21:03.little down the hill here. They won't all piley on to the inside.

:21:03. > :21:12.Interesting to see what they do. There's Princess Highway, the Irish

:21:13. > :21:19.filly. They're expecting a big run from her. Her mother won this race

:21:19. > :21:26.many years ago. The Fugue will be one of the last ones in. Let's go

:21:26. > :21:33.to Jim for the race. Can Hayley Turner do this? They're

:21:33. > :21:43.set, ready and running. In the centre first away is Twirl going

:21:43. > :21:49.

:21:49. > :21:54.very fast. Out deep. Dinvar Diva. Hazel Lavery. Salford Art. Deep on

:21:54. > :21:57.the track, Dinvar Diva now starting to try and improve. Well back in

:21:57. > :22:01.the field, Momentary. Hayley Turner in the centre. Trapped very wide of

:22:01. > :22:06.the rear is Princess Highway. Not going fast enough for some of these

:22:06. > :22:11.back in the pack. On the inside next is Pink Damsel. Followed by

:22:11. > :22:19.Kailani out the back with Chella Thriller. It's Vow on the inside

:22:19. > :22:25.that shows the way from Shirocco Star. Dinvar Diva. Tucked away,

:22:25. > :22:31.Hazel Lavery. Twirl. They race down into Swindley Bottom, followed by

:22:31. > :22:41.The Fugue, who's travelled on the inside here. Further back in the

:22:41. > :22:43.

:22:43. > :22:48.field, Inchina. Princess Highway. Pink Damsel. Momentary's been

:22:48. > :22:53.shuffled back from Kailani and last is Chella Thriller. Pulling up

:22:53. > :22:58.towards home and Shirocco Star the runner-up at Epsom kicks on by two

:22:58. > :23:04.lengths. Dinvar Diva is second. Three lengths in advance of Vow.

:23:04. > :23:07.Behind them is Twirl on the outside. Followed by Kailani being pushed

:23:07. > :23:16.along. Hazel Lavery. The Fugue is getting the run at the centre now.

:23:16. > :23:23.With six lengths to make up. Princess Highway to the outside.

:23:23. > :23:28.Kailani. Inchina. Dam dam Pink Damsel. They now straighten up for

:23:28. > :23:32.home. Shirocco Star's slipped the field, gone about five lengths in

:23:32. > :23:35.front. Vow. Princess Highway down the outside and The Fugue getting

:23:36. > :23:42.into the clear as well. They race up inside the two furlong marker

:23:42. > :23:47.now and Shirocco Star's still there. They are starting to close and

:23:48. > :23:54.Princess Highway is sprinting to the lead. Three lengths in front.

:23:54. > :24:01.Shirocco Star. The Fugue. The Fugue running fairly well. It's a win for

:24:01. > :24:10.Ireland in the Ribblesdale as Princess Highway wins by about five.

:24:10. > :24:16.Tight second, The Fugue and Shirocco Star in a photo. Twirl and

:24:16. > :24:23.Vow. Kailani was well back. Followed by Hazel Lavery. Kailani.

:24:23. > :24:28.Out the back, Inchina, followed by Pink Damsel. So far behind if

:24:28. > :24:36.others, Chella Thriller -- the others. And Dinvar Diva. No doubt

:24:36. > :24:46.about the winner, number 9, Princess Highway. Trained in

:24:46. > :24:47.

:24:47. > :24:57.Ireland at the Curragh. Ridden by pat mulen. It's won by a street. --

:24:57. > :25:00.Mullen. Looks like The Fugue has second. Holland in fourth. Salford

:25:00. > :25:07.Art, Paul Hanagan and a gap to Twirl who was up there for most of

:25:07. > :25:14.the way and then got a little bit weary. Let's check the others. Vow

:25:14. > :25:22.couldn't go on at all. And then a gap to Kailani who also didn't

:25:22. > :25:29.figure. We were saying how unlucky she was at Epsom. Hazel Lavery who

:25:29. > :25:36.got tired Inchina wasn't quick enough. Still the others are coming.

:25:36. > :25:43.They were so far by hind. There's Pink Damsel. Momentary was well

:25:43. > :25:49.back. So too Chella Thriller. But Dermot on the near side chatting

:25:49. > :25:59.there and a man who's travelled the world and also trained a winner of

:25:59. > :26:13.

:26:13. > :26:18.the American triple crown carrying back -- Smullen coming back.

:26:18. > :26:28.Fantastic job. She's blitzed them and made it a winning hat trick.

:26:28. > :26:32.

:26:32. > :26:41.In doing so, this filly follows in the footsteps of her dad. Her

:26:41. > :26:44.daughter does the same now. We pick it up now. Making stealthy progress,

:26:44. > :26:49.smulen hasn't had to go for the whip here. The Fugue has run well,

:26:50. > :26:56.not well enough, and this winner is a very, very creditable and fair

:26:56. > :27:04.winner of this race, don't you think? Very good winner of the race.

:27:04. > :27:11.Maybe the ground would have gone for her, it's a very good family.

:27:11. > :27:17.She won the race, the same race as another horse who won the race last

:27:17. > :27:24.year, so at the same... Also didn't she beat... And third that day was

:27:24. > :27:34.the filly who won our Oaks. This form is very good and that's the

:27:34. > :27:34.

:27:34. > :27:41.reason why she's won a long way. Second and thirld were very close

:27:41. > :27:48.together. Salford Art finished well, you know. Yes, Shirocco Star's run

:27:48. > :27:55.a great race. Strong staying stallion. That's why they rode her

:27:55. > :28:00.for Stam nafplt it just didn't work. This filly is very, very good

:28:00. > :28:04.indeed -- stamina. You saw the celebrations there, Smullen

:28:04. > :28:13.remaining calm but the owner absolutely thrilled. The distance

:28:13. > :28:17.is six lengths and a short head. The time 2.33.67. That was around

:28:17. > :28:27.about 3.67 seconds slower than Racing Post standard and well

:28:27. > :28:28.

:28:28. > :28:35.outside the record. It's not a day for records. Dermot

:28:35. > :28:41.Weld talking to pat Smullen. A successful partnership for many

:28:41. > :28:50.seasons now. Dermot Weld no strange tore success internationally. A

:28:50. > :28:56.couple of weeks ago he was away with a runner. He's won a couple of

:28:56. > :29:03.Melbourne Cups. Viewers in Australia would know that. And he's

:29:03. > :29:08.won so many big races worldwide. Let's check the full details on

:29:08. > :29:13.this Ribblesdale Stakes with Princess Highway, the winner with

:29:13. > :29:23.John. She's a fresh and improving horse.

:29:23. > :29:28.

:29:28. > :29:32.Princess Highway wins the let's have a word. Congratulations

:29:32. > :29:36.exyour 15th win here and of course it's all kept in the family, the

:29:36. > :29:40.dam you trained to win the same race? Yes, it's NHS to win the same

:29:40. > :29:45.race with her dam. She's been a backward filly, progressed well

:29:45. > :29:48.during the spring. She beat the winner of the Epsom Oaks

:29:48. > :29:53.convincingly last time out and I thought this was an excellent

:29:53. > :29:58.renewable of the Ribblesdale so we had to improve today and she's done

:29:58. > :30:02.it. How come she didn't take in Epsom and you decided to come here?

:30:02. > :30:06.Ascot's always been lucky for me. She's a late developing filly, I

:30:06. > :30:12.thought that Epsom might come a little soon for her and it gave us

:30:12. > :30:17.more time to come here today and go on for the Irish Oaks. Do you

:30:17. > :30:20.believe she's the best one-and-a- half filly of her generation?

:30:20. > :30:26.proved it. She was running last Sunday but we decided to come here.

:30:26. > :30:32.My only concern was in case the ground was slow for her. They went

:30:32. > :30:42.a very true pace. Pat took his time on her and rode brilliantly. Great

:30:42. > :30:51.

:30:51. > :30:57.said, our only fear today was that the ground was too soft for her.

:30:57. > :31:02.She handled it extremely well. It's not too bad. I think she would

:31:02. > :31:10.prefer better ground. The boss was saying she is probably the best

:31:10. > :31:15.staying three-year-old filly around. She beat the Oaks winner. The form

:31:15. > :31:20.was there. I fancied her strongly today. She's

:31:20. > :31:26.an extremely good filly. She stays the mile-and-a-half and she

:31:26. > :31:36.quickens. Thank you. Thank you very much. Just a word on the owners and

:31:36. > :31:38.

:31:38. > :31:44.breeders. It was wougt by Walter Heffner, she was born in 1910. He

:31:44. > :31:48.was born in Ireland. He lives in Switzerland. I am not too certain.

:31:48. > :31:52.Any way, that filly, the latest of theirs and will go on to greater

:31:52. > :31:56.things, I am sure. We are about to switch to BBC Two. When you join us

:31:56. > :32:00.there, we will find out whether Fame And Glory can follow up his

:32:00. > :32:05.success in last year's Gold Cup and become one of the many horses to be

:32:05. > :32:08.successful more than once. It's a race that rewards the fan over the

:32:08. > :32:15.years because you get horses coming back again and again to have a

:32:15. > :32:21.crack at it. The most famous being Yates.

:32:21. > :32:31.Have you noticed how their manes grow longer than normally.

:32:31. > :32:32.

:32:32. > :32:41.Yesterday So You Think's mane was long.

:32:41. > :32:46.Maybe Fame And Glory has a similar propensity to grow hair. There is

:32:46. > :32:51.Mr O'Brien. We had 14 races so far at Royal Ascot. 14 different

:32:51. > :32:55.jockeys have been successful. one trainer has trained two winners.

:32:55. > :33:00.The Gold Cup at 3.45pm. We will switch to BBC Two and we will see

:33:00. > :33:07.you there in just over a minute. The spots of rain are starting to
