:00:00. > :00:31.Welcome to Road To Rio. This is the show where every month we take an
:00:32. > :00:36.in-depth look at the preparations for this summer's Olympic and
:00:37. > :00:41.Paralympic games. Coming up, Mack they won three medals at London
:00:42. > :00:45.2012. An ABB charge Britain's swimmers to the two better in
:00:46. > :00:53.Brazil? Is British cycling in crisis? Could discover nation
:00:54. > :00:58.allegations affect medal potential? And gold at the qualifiers. One of
:00:59. > :01:04.nine boxes to secure a spot. -- boxes. It is nice to think I'm doing
:01:05. > :01:07.it for my country. I would like to thank everybody at home for
:01:08. > :01:13.supporting me. Let's get that gold in Rio. And we look at the new dish
:01:14. > :01:21.outfits for the Olympic and Paralympic games. -- artist. --
:01:22. > :01:32.British. We start with swimming. The other big trials for the British
:01:33. > :01:37.athletes were held. For some is all delivered under pressure. A few new
:01:38. > :01:44.names also emerged. Here's a round-up of what happened in
:01:45. > :01:51.Glasgow. -- for swimmers. James guy is absolutely world-class! Fabulous
:01:52. > :01:58.swim. He punches the air. Superb there from Chloe. Probably the most
:01:59. > :02:07.anticipated event of the week, the men's brushwork. What a swim! --
:02:08. > :02:14.breast wrote. The main job was just to qualify. I really happy. Superb
:02:15. > :02:20.swim. He has taken 20 seconds off his personal best. This is a girl
:02:21. > :02:28.who missed out on going to the Olympics in London. She got it spot
:02:29. > :02:31.on tonight. It means so much to me. I've been really an emotional, and
:02:32. > :02:36.to come away with the time on my last swim is a massive relief. One
:02:37. > :02:45.of the swim is of his live, you can just -- dust off his passport. More
:02:46. > :02:52.than good enough to get her on the plane. Adam will touch here. Inside
:02:53. > :03:02.the qualification time. Then will be British champion. What an excellent
:03:03. > :03:06.swim. A few surprise results at the British trials. To discuss the
:03:07. > :03:10.implications, I enjoyed by someone who knows a fair bit, Becky
:03:11. > :03:15.Adlington. The trials looked fantastic. Adam and James certainly
:03:16. > :03:20.impress in, but some tough nullification standard set by your
:03:21. > :03:23.old coach. He likes to make things challenging and that is the setting.
:03:24. > :03:30.I understand the reason behind it. It is one of those things a lot of
:03:31. > :03:34.athletes in the past have said it is my dream to make the team, which is
:03:35. > :03:37.great, but it should be a dream to get a medal at the Olympics, not
:03:38. > :03:43.just make the team. It is changing that mentality. It is focusing to
:03:44. > :03:47.try to stand up against the rest of the world and be a country to be
:03:48. > :03:55.feared. We mentioned Adam and James winning last year, and someone who
:03:56. > :04:00.also impressed was Jazz Carlin. I'm so happy she qualify. She has always
:04:01. > :04:04.just missed out, and this he is a brilliant opportunity for her to be
:04:05. > :04:08.the athlete we know she is. Let's look at the full squad. Eight of
:04:09. > :04:13.this woman's got the automatic qualifying times. 15 he be secondary
:04:14. > :04:17.standard. Three were lucky to receive our cards. Who really
:04:18. > :04:23.impressed? Chloe was phenomenal. Close shot everyone. That is what I
:04:24. > :04:27.love about Olympic year -- Quarry shocked everyone. She obviously
:04:28. > :04:34.deserved it. There are so many people that stepped up. You have
:04:35. > :04:39.Matt, Duncan... Loads of people that just did really step up. Is this a
:04:40. > :04:44.team that makes you miss competing? It seems like a good group. No. No.
:04:45. > :04:49.Don't miss the training? Definitely not. This is the whole point of
:04:50. > :04:57.athletes moving on, said the new breeds,. It is their opportunity to
:04:58. > :05:01.shine. My advice to them would be to just keep it simple. Don't walk
:05:02. > :05:05.around the whole village and get totally starstruck by everyone.
:05:06. > :05:09.Sometimes you can get caught up in the event. You just need to keep it
:05:10. > :05:14.simple and remember you just put your goggles on and go for a swim.
:05:15. > :05:19.It is not life and death. Three medals in London four years ago, can
:05:20. > :05:24.the squad better that in Rio? I think the colours is the difficult
:05:25. > :05:30.one to pinpoint on anyone. We have very in Beijing, three in London
:05:31. > :05:38.different colours. We could see four or five if everyone is on form,
:05:39. > :05:41.touch wood. It is a great team and they have got opportunities there.
:05:42. > :05:46.It will be exciting to watch. Thank you. From a sport for the optimism
:05:47. > :05:52.to one plunged into tomorrow. With less than 100 days to go, which is
:05:53. > :05:56.cycling has lost its technical director, Shane Sutton. He quit his
:05:57. > :06:00.post following allegations about his conduct. He was surrendered after
:06:01. > :06:08.claims of and discrimination. An independent review has been modest.
:06:09. > :06:11.He said in a statement as British athletes begin final preparations
:06:12. > :06:15.for Rio it is crucial they can do so without destruction. But the
:06:16. > :06:20.development of his position were becoming that. As sports editor
:06:21. > :06:24.spoke to the chief executive and ask him if the departure would affect
:06:25. > :06:36.written's medal potential. ! Written. Hopefully not. We have a
:06:37. > :06:39.fantastic set of coaches. So no, we don't figure will affect that
:06:40. > :06:45.performance in Rio. It would be great to have shown there, but with
:06:46. > :06:47.the destruction around him at the minute, it would've been
:06:48. > :06:52.detrimental. It is a tough environment. This programme is built
:06:53. > :06:55.on being the best three riders in the world and international success.
:06:56. > :07:02.It is about staying ahead of the world. However, we have to balance
:07:03. > :07:06.that without duty of care as well, and it is our duty of care to
:07:07. > :07:10.everyone in the system. That is why we need to do this independent
:07:11. > :07:13.review. We will keep you up-to-date. We have really shown you how the
:07:14. > :07:17.British swimming team is shaping up. They were the only British athletes
:07:18. > :07:20.to excel. He is a glimpse of what the other Rio levels are up to. --
:07:21. > :08:56.hopefuls. Still to come, Mike Jenkins shines
:08:57. > :09:01.in the Gold Coast Suns. We will round-up the latest from the British
:09:02. > :09:05.triathletes. Any hockey playing brothers who could both be heading
:09:06. > :09:10.to regard and representing different countries -- Rio. The Team GB squad
:09:11. > :09:15.is growing quickly. Now includes nine boxes. That is after the
:09:16. > :09:19.European event held in Turkey where British fighters enjoyed more than a
:09:20. > :09:31.little success. Our sports reporter was there.
:09:32. > :09:39.This is the Turkey Black Sea coast. It may look like a nice place for a
:09:40. > :09:43.holiday, but for Great Britain's boxes, they came here for one of the
:09:44. > :09:50.most important weeks of their careers. With no Brits yet qualified
:09:51. > :09:56.for Rio, there were fighting for Olympic places. Only the finalists
:09:57. > :10:00.in the women division could book births, and Nicola Adams, that never
:10:01. > :10:07.looked in doubt as she eased her way to the flyweight gold medal. The
:10:08. > :10:17.first edition box -- boxer to qualify. I'm on the way to Rio, and
:10:18. > :10:26.it is an amazing feeling. The main three Rio places where on offer at
:10:27. > :10:31.each weight. Five boxes all qualified, winning goal. Obviously
:10:32. > :10:40.you start wanting to become champion. I've been working for it
:10:41. > :10:43.since I was a kid, and now I am here. Never thought in a million
:10:44. > :10:55.years I would be here, but I am right now. Two silver-medallists
:10:56. > :11:07.sealed spots, while a win or bust third fight God and Hanif through.
:11:08. > :11:11.-- got Adam Fowler through. With more chances to qualify in the next
:11:12. > :11:23.couple of months, that number could grow.
:11:24. > :11:30.Despite the qualifying process for Rio already begin under way, radical
:11:31. > :11:33.new proposals have been put forward by the governing body which could
:11:34. > :11:37.see amateurs fight alongside professionals this summer. It is
:11:38. > :11:47.controversial. Let's hear what Anthony Joshua makes of it, and from
:11:48. > :11:58.the President of the Association. Boxing is probably the last Olympic
:11:59. > :12:02.sport, and the lipid medal is supposedly ordered to the best
:12:03. > :12:11.athletes in the sport. I think for me as president, the IOC agenda made
:12:12. > :12:16.it very clear every international federation should consider bringing
:12:17. > :12:23.the best possible professional boxer. It is a good opportunity for
:12:24. > :12:26.people who don't want to rush to become professional and still want
:12:27. > :12:30.to represent the country, but it gives them the opportunity to
:12:31. > :12:34.compete with professionals. It makes for tougher competition, but it is
:12:35. > :12:38.just how it is regulated. It will only grow with experience. Certainly
:12:39. > :12:42.interesting to see what happens there. Time for the mother catch up
:12:43. > :12:47.with what is happening on the ground in Rio. The BBC South America
:12:48. > :12:54.correspondent joins us now. Thank you for joining us. Tell us more
:12:55. > :12:57.about the impeachment scandal and possible removal of the President
:12:58. > :13:02.Dilma Rousseff. It continues to gather momentum. What impact could
:13:03. > :13:07.this have if it happens before the games? It is huge. Everybody's
:13:08. > :13:12.attention is focused on the political crisis in Brazil. And not
:13:13. > :13:15.on the other big games. Dilma Rousseff faces imminent impeachment
:13:16. > :13:20.and suspension overcharges in Congress. The last act as president
:13:21. > :13:24.could be to receive the Olympic torch when it arrives. After that,
:13:25. > :13:27.she may have to step aside and be suspended for the duration of the
:13:28. > :13:33.impeachment trial. It is humiliating for her. It is a big moment for
:13:34. > :13:36.Brazil and has somewhat deflected attention away from the other big
:13:37. > :13:41.games. The problems don't stop. Two people have lost lives as a result
:13:42. > :13:45.of a cycle lane claps billed for the lyrics. 11 people may have died as a
:13:46. > :13:55.result of construction on venues gone wrong. -- cycle lane collapse
:13:56. > :13:59.build for the Olympics. The collapse of the limbic cycleway was a big
:14:00. > :14:03.concern because it may have been rushed. -- Olympics and stop there
:14:04. > :14:09.are questions whether the correct precautions were taken. The pressure
:14:10. > :14:15.to get these finished on time will be round-up and hopefully they will
:14:16. > :14:19.not at corners in terms of safety. Another of events have taken place
:14:20. > :14:25.successfully. Is the general consensus that this went well? The
:14:26. > :14:33.sporting venues around's book to be going well. About 98% of the work is
:14:34. > :14:39.complete and most of the sporting venues are complete. The velodrome
:14:40. > :14:42.is causing problems. The test event had to be delayed and there are
:14:43. > :14:47.problems laying the specific would track in the velodrome. It is not
:14:48. > :14:51.the sporting venues themselves causing problems it is the
:14:52. > :14:55.infrastructure, especially the main Metroline, which is a critical part
:14:56. > :14:57.of linking the city of Rio to a big part. That will be touch and go
:14:58. > :15:09.whether that is ready. Thank you. Weightlifting has had a test event
:15:10. > :15:12.by gigabits were not there. One woman and one man had secured a
:15:13. > :15:13.place in Rio but we don't know who will take up the slots
:15:14. > :15:15.place in Rio but we don't know who will take up the slots yet but the
:15:16. > :15:19.leading contender to take up the women's place is that we Smith who
:15:20. > :15:24.was a London Olympian. Here is her real notebook. I gave up school to
:15:25. > :15:29.focus on the training for the Olympics four years ago -- Rio. It
:15:30. > :15:33.takes over your whole life and it can be really difficult and when
:15:34. > :15:38.weightlifting starts going wrong and it is your whole life, where'd you
:15:39. > :15:44.go from there? What have you got to distract you? It can be tough but we
:15:45. > :15:49.do it for the love of it. The buildup to Rio is entirely different
:15:50. > :15:53.to the buildup to London. For London we had host nation spots so we had
:15:54. > :15:56.five of them in the end. Five people definitely going in and it was just
:15:57. > :16:02.a case of beating a teammate to get to the place where you can go and I
:16:03. > :16:06.did. This time you have to work harder to go and I have had to work
:16:07. > :16:10.really hard to qualify for a space in Rio. The women's team have come
:16:11. > :16:14.on so much and we have got Rebekah Tiler now who is 17 years old and is
:16:15. > :16:18.breaking records left, right and centre and it is amazing to see and
:16:19. > :16:25.I think it is inspiring for many children her age and younger. Since
:16:26. > :16:30.London, women have formed a strong contingent in the UK and have been
:16:31. > :16:35.working so hard. Unfortunately the men's team lost their funding last
:16:36. > :16:39.year so now it is just the women's team. It is great to see so many
:16:40. > :16:45.more women just be in the media for weightlifting. Another sport which
:16:46. > :16:49.has certainly grown over the last Olympic cycle is triathlon. Few knew
:16:50. > :16:52.much about the sport for the Brownlee Brothers began winning
:16:53. > :16:56.medals but Alastair and Johnny are no longer the only headline names
:16:57. > :17:01.for Great Britain. Others have proved themselves on the world
:17:02. > :17:05.straight like Helen Jenkin -- stage. A recent win for her in Australia
:17:06. > :17:16.confirmed her place in Team GB in Rio. Let's look at how the squad is
:17:17. > :17:19.shaping up. Victory. Hollans takes the win in Edmonton. A stunning
:17:20. > :17:24.result and that last Jonathan Brownlee wins. To find a dominant
:17:25. > :17:31.force in world triathlon you don't have to look far. The Brownlee
:17:32. > :17:34.Brothers are strong favourite for Rio but who will join them on the
:17:35. > :17:39.Copacabana? To decide the final women's spot it came down to a
:17:40. > :17:44.shootout on the Gold Coast between Jodie Stimpson and two-time world
:17:45. > :17:47.champion Helen Jenkins. We have one spot and Jodi and are ranked one and
:17:48. > :17:50.three in the world and it is almost crazy that one of us will be going
:17:51. > :17:54.to the games. She's a very hard competitor to go up against that it
:17:55. > :18:00.makes it more exciting and gigabits have got some great athletes. In the
:18:01. > :18:07.race, Jenkins proved stronger and took the wind and a shot at the
:18:08. > :18:11.Olympics. I really feel for her. Just our team is so strong. It just
:18:12. > :18:14.isn't fair that she might not be going to the games. It is an
:18:15. > :18:19.exciting position to be in and they think we are blessed as a country in
:18:20. > :18:25.Great Britain because we have got a great amount of talent. She has
:18:26. > :18:29.pushed them all away. As for the men third-place is still up for grabs.
:18:30. > :18:36.The contenders are Tom Bishop and Gordon Benson. Neither have gold
:18:37. > :18:40.medals but they show the potential in the Gold Coast to support the
:18:41. > :18:46.Brownlee Brothers in Rio. We were still not great come out we need to
:18:47. > :18:50.be the best we can be. While there may be the odd wobble before the
:18:51. > :18:55.Olympics come just ask Johnny, more moments like this are highly
:18:56. > :18:58.likely. It is great to be part of team Great Britain and to be part of
:18:59. > :19:07.the system here. We're going there to make a splash. We mentioned the
:19:08. > :19:10.British swimmers trying to get to the Olympics earlier in the show. It
:19:11. > :19:15.has also been a crucial month for the Paralympic counterparts as their
:19:16. > :19:18.trials were hosted for Rio. A total of 25 athletes made the
:19:19. > :19:23.qualification time over five days of competition. Now we go to our
:19:24. > :19:28.correspondent. It has been a successful five days for Britain's
:19:29. > :19:31.Paralympic swimmers in Glasgow. 25 athletes achieve the qualification
:19:32. > :19:36.standard for Rio and world records have been broken in D 250 metres
:19:37. > :19:43.freestyle and the 400 metres freestyle. Simmons admits even she
:19:44. > :19:49.was surprised by her performance. I am so chuffed. I didn't really want
:19:50. > :19:54.to go that fast that trials, I wanted to try to keep it for Rio but
:19:55. > :19:58.I am really happy and I'm happy to have pushed myself to that time and
:19:59. > :20:03.now I can look back and work towards the things that I need to do in Rio
:20:04. > :20:08.because that is where it counts, not here where you can go smashing get
:20:09. > :20:12.the gold medals. To there are also exciting new talents that have
:20:13. > :20:15.achieved the qualification standard including 12-year-old Abby Kane and
:20:16. > :20:21.teenagers Rebecca Redfern and Ellie Robinson. And the national director
:20:22. > :20:25.is confident that these youngsters will only help strengthen the
:20:26. > :20:28.development of the team. That upward pressure from our development
:20:29. > :20:33.athletes keeps our podium on athletes honest and working hard. It
:20:34. > :20:36.puts pressure on them looking behind them for their place over their
:20:37. > :20:39.shoulder and it is good for us and for team Great Britain to have that
:20:40. > :20:42.happening. The next opera many of these athletes is the European
:20:43. > :20:47.championships in Portugal next week and then it is back to training and
:20:48. > :20:51.if this week is anything to go by, British Paralympic summing is in a
:20:52. > :20:54.very good place ahead of Rio. Athletes born in Northern Ireland
:20:55. > :20:57.can decide who they want to compete for, team Great Britain or Northern
:20:58. > :21:00.Ireland and in hockey this has thrown up the unusual scenario of
:21:01. > :21:04.two brothers from Antrim who could be heading to Rio de Janeiro but
:21:05. > :21:09.playing for different teams. Now we go to our correspondent. Two
:21:10. > :21:12.brothers both born in Northern Ireland but representing different
:21:13. > :21:17.countries and both hoping for success in Rio. But the competitive
:21:18. > :21:21.sibling rivalry started a long time ago. We played all sports when we
:21:22. > :21:25.were younger, not just hockey, cricket and rugby and football and
:21:26. > :21:29.golf and tennis, everything we could get our hands on and every game
:21:30. > :21:35.wound up in an argument. The funny story would be on Sunday lunch when
:21:36. > :21:39.our grandma, you couldn't close your eyes in grace because half your food
:21:40. > :21:42.would be missing. It was over a century waiting for Ireland. Their
:21:43. > :21:50.trip to Rio booked when Australia claimed the Oceania cup. It is one
:21:51. > :21:56.of those situations where you have got relief at the start and it has
:21:57. > :21:59.been such a long wait. And then there was the realisation that we
:22:00. > :22:06.have really done something special here. But then we really have to
:22:07. > :22:10.focus on going there in performing and not just taking part. While
:22:11. > :22:18.Ireland will be metal outsiders: the expectations for Great Britain are
:22:19. > :22:23.much higher. We are a metal target. We have our podium programme. That
:22:24. > :22:27.is the goal for us but I cannot speak for the Irish guys. I'm sure
:22:28. > :22:33.Paul will but we're going there to win medals. You would like your
:22:34. > :22:38.friends and family to be doing well as long as it is at your own
:22:39. > :22:43.expense. A bit of a dilemma for the family if they come against each
:22:44. > :22:46.other. That is just about it for another action-packed show. We will
:22:47. > :22:49.leave you with a look at some of the major Olympic events to look out for
:22:50. > :22:51.over the next month, all of which you can follow here at the BBC as we
:22:52. > :23:45.continue on the Road to Rio. I will start off by giving you
:23:46. > :23:50.a quick sense of what is to come over the next two or three days
:23:51. > :23:53.through the bank holiday weekend. Thankfully, I am sure many of you
:23:54. > :23:56.will say hurray, at last, it will be less cold and there will be some
:23:57. > :24:01.sunshine and less rain at times.
