:00:41. > :00:45.Good afternoon and welcome to a sunny but rather windy Hyde Park
:00:45. > :00:49.and the Dextro Energy London triathlon. A sport which is the
:00:49. > :00:52.ultimate test in stamina, strength and skill. This race is a big one.
:00:52. > :00:57.The world's top triathlete have made sure they are here because
:00:57. > :01:01.this weekend is a test event for London 2012. The proposed course
:01:01. > :01:06.for the event at next day's Olympic Games and a stunning setting it is
:01:06. > :01:15.as well. We have got a great crowd going on here. One hour before the
:01:15. > :01:20.name men's grace. Hello, crowd! You are live on BBC Two! Britain's top
:01:20. > :01:24.female triathlete is Helen Jenkins. She was world champion in 2008. She
:01:24. > :01:28.has come third in the past two years but if you were in any doubt
:01:28. > :01:34.help fit a triathlete has to be, look at this.
:01:34. > :01:38.This is heaven suffering a heavy crash in April -- Helen. She got up
:01:38. > :01:48.to finish the race. Since then, her season has really, really
:01:48. > :01:51.
:01:51. > :01:55.Everything has been going really well. My training has been going
:01:56. > :02:00.well, I am really happy with my last two races. It has given me a
:02:00. > :02:04.bit of confidence heading into this weekend. I have always liked the
:02:04. > :02:08.course in Madrid, we have had some bad races there but most of them
:02:08. > :02:12.have been really good. I did not have a great swimmer but
:02:12. > :02:16.I really worked hard on the bike and then run and had one of the
:02:16. > :02:26.best runs I have ever had. I think I ran almost a minute faster than I
:02:26. > :02:30.
:02:30. > :02:39.have ever done on that course Kitzbuhel well is a lovely place,
:02:39. > :02:42.it is always a bit colder, so I am Myself and Sarah Hoskins got away
:02:42. > :02:46.on a bike and I was hoping she would stay with me for the ride but
:02:47. > :02:52.I got caught so I wasn't sure how I would feel. Heading on to the rent
:02:52. > :03:02.after all that work in my legs. My hamstrings were really tight, I
:03:02. > :03:12.
:03:12. > :03:16.If it peters out at the beginning and then it is me and Paula Findlay
:03:16. > :03:22.at the beginning. It is a small margin, four seconds over a two are
:03:22. > :03:25.raised, that is not much but in both races, I gave everything I
:03:25. > :03:33.could and I know there is nothing else I could have done, just hope
:03:33. > :03:38.This is a massive event, the Olympic test event. The setting is
:03:38. > :03:41.amazing. I think doing the full Olympic course, going in front of
:03:41. > :03:47.Buckingham Palace, it will be really interesting to see how it is
:03:47. > :03:49.different. The atmosphere has been great for the past two years. The
:03:49. > :03:56.course isn't a massively challenging, it is pretty flat, I
:03:56. > :04:02.would like it if they would build some holes, that would make it
:04:02. > :04:07.interesting. I could qualify for the Olympics this week and, if I do
:04:07. > :04:10.not, at there are more chances like in Beijing but I want to do it this
:04:10. > :04:14.weekend, get on the podium and make the Olympic team.
:04:14. > :04:17.SONALI SHAH: Qualifying for the Olympics is going to be on the mind
:04:17. > :04:21.of so many athletes here this weekend but it is a gruelling sport
:04:21. > :04:26.and anything can happen. And one man who knows exactly what it is
:04:26. > :04:32.like taking part in a triathlon at the highest level is Richard
:04:32. > :04:36.stamens. Let's talk about Helen Jenkins. Three years on at the age
:04:37. > :04:41.of 27, it feels like she is coming into her own and reaching a peak at
:04:41. > :04:47.the right time. Absolutely, she has totally matured as an athlete. She
:04:47. > :04:54.suffered some injuries but she is working on them and she is working
:04:54. > :04:58.in the gym, making herself solid. Hopefully today another great
:04:58. > :05:03.result. She has already been on the podium this year, that is crucial.
:05:03. > :05:10.It is required as part of qualifications. Who is her main
:05:10. > :05:16.competition in the series? You have got the three Emmas, from Australia.
:05:16. > :05:19.They have already got a try factor. All three of them on the podium.
:05:19. > :05:22.They will look to dominate, they will not necessarily work as a team
:05:22. > :05:26.because they want to beat each other but that only makes the other
:05:26. > :05:31.one go harder. Definitely Australians but other nations as
:05:31. > :05:34.well but have got qualifications in this race to try to get to London
:05:34. > :05:39.2012 and I think they will see Americans, Canadians, all of them
:05:39. > :05:42.having a good. We were here yesterday as well, the crowd is
:05:42. > :05:47.already screening for the athletes running. The atmosphere is so great
:05:47. > :05:52.with only one year to go until the Olympic Games as well. Yes, it is a
:05:52. > :05:56.showcase. It really shows London off but by going down to London and
:05:56. > :05:59.Buckingham Palace, it is a spectacle. And everybody wants to
:05:59. > :06:08.come down and soak up the atmosphere and get as close to the
:06:08. > :06:11.athletes as possible. The triathlon is one of the few events that you
:06:11. > :06:18.don't need a ticket for. Come down next year to watch the race for
:06:18. > :06:28.free. Graham Bell has got your back as well, he has been out scouting
:06:28. > :06:32.out the best vantage points for the It all starts here at the
:06:32. > :06:35.Serpentine, the curving lake in the heart of Hyde Park. It might get a
:06:35. > :06:40.bit busy here at the start so if you fancy something more tranquil,
:06:40. > :06:45.you can come here to the south side of the late to take some tea or if
:06:45. > :06:52.you're feeling brave, have a dip in the Serpentine Lido. The water is
:06:52. > :06:59.bound to be warmer than on Christmas Day, that is when the
:06:59. > :07:03.Peter Pan dip takes place. Once out of the water, it is on to the bikes.
:07:03. > :07:07.It is a flat course but with all the turns and speed bumps, it is
:07:07. > :07:16.technically demanding. They will then cross the Serpentine Bridge,
:07:16. > :07:20.heading towards the south of Hyde Park. the Serpentine Gallery will
:07:20. > :07:24.be opening a new space in time for the London Games. You can then
:07:24. > :07:32.either feast your eyes on the opulence of the Albert Memorial or
:07:32. > :07:34.keep your eyes peeled for the athletes as they head down to Hyde
:07:34. > :07:38.Park Corner. There they pose the imposing
:07:38. > :07:42.Wellington Arch and then just a short sprint down Constitution Hill
:07:42. > :07:50.to the grandest of them all, Buckingham Palace. After that they
:07:50. > :07:54.turn back and raced towards the park, for 7 like laps in all. Then
:07:54. > :08:00.they will go on the run, knowing they are only four laps from the
:08:00. > :08:06.end of the race. A great place to see them is here at Rotten Row, it
:08:06. > :08:10.is a big U-turn towards the lake. This place might be called Rotten
:08:10. > :08:15.but it is anything but. 150 years ago, this is where Londoners came
:08:15. > :08:18.to promenade. It is a place to be seen back then. As they head
:08:18. > :08:27.towards the Serpentine, you can relax by the Diana memorial
:08:27. > :08:31.fountain. It was opened in 2004 at a cost of 3.6 million. If you are
:08:31. > :08:34.not one of the lucky people in the grandstand, you could stand here,
:08:34. > :08:38.right on the finishing straight and cheer the athletes as they sprint
:08:38. > :08:46.towards the line. It is an ideal position and most importantly, it
:08:46. > :08:50.The spectators really well how fantastic access to all the
:08:50. > :08:54.athletes and watching them perform next year at the Olympic Games.
:08:54. > :09:00.absolutely, and the course is so close to the athlete. Behind me, we
:09:00. > :09:04.can see Simon Whitfield, Olympic Games in Sydney champion, just
:09:04. > :09:10.preparing for the race. He is getting ready. You are literally on
:09:10. > :09:13.top of the race. It is pretty unique in that aspect. It is the
:09:13. > :09:17.last time they can test themselves properly on the Olympic course as
:09:17. > :09:22.well, what will they try to learn? It will give them visualisation.
:09:22. > :09:26.They will be able to learn the race for next year, that is so important.
:09:26. > :09:29.As they prepare for the Olympic race, they can visualise what went
:09:29. > :09:37.on today and use that to inspire them and hopefully motivate them to
:09:37. > :09:42.train that bit harder. Who does this course sit? Pretty much anyone
:09:42. > :09:45.because it is not a hard course, the topography is such that you
:09:45. > :09:55.have got a technical course in terms of Benn's but you have not
:09:55. > :09:55.
:09:56. > :10:01.got hills, -- bends. What kind of tactics will afflict be thinking of
:10:01. > :10:06.as they go round the course? They will try to conserve their energy
:10:06. > :10:10.and this win is a lottery. A lot of the time it is won on the run.
:10:10. > :10:14.the race is won on the run. You can set yourself up with a good swim
:10:14. > :10:19.and bike and that is what they will be trying to do. Those with the
:10:19. > :10:23.strength in the front end of the race will look through the bends
:10:23. > :10:27.and through Marble Arch and Constitution Hill and try to attack.
:10:27. > :10:37.Stuart Hayes is the man to concentrate on that. So many people
:10:37. > :10:37.
:10:37. > :10:45.will be thinking about team GB and Olympic qualification, and team GB
:10:45. > :10:54.is talking about using the equivalent of... Do you think that
:10:54. > :10:58.team GB will use the domestics? lot of things have to take place,
:10:58. > :11:03.that will allow the selectors to take place. It is an option and we
:11:03. > :11:11.should not rule it out and we as in other countries use it, for example
:11:11. > :11:16.in Athens. It is a possibility but I do not think we have passing that,
:11:16. > :11:21.we have got the brothers Brownlees, they know what each other are doing.
:11:21. > :11:25.With that in place, the team will gel well. The women is a different
:11:25. > :11:29.side. We have got Helen Jenkins, the only podium finish this year,
:11:29. > :11:33.she is dominant. They may look to was that angle that we have got a
:11:33. > :11:39.long way to go in the selection process. Wouldn't it be good to see
:11:39. > :11:45.someone who would be willing to sacrifice a medal? The yes, but at
:11:45. > :11:49.the same time a lot of things happen, in terms of making the
:11:49. > :11:55.podium and in Beijing, the final in a few weeks' time, it opens the
:11:55. > :11:58.door to athlete. You would think there would be a sit down
:11:58. > :12:03.conversation if people were willing to sacrifice medals. We are talking
:12:03. > :12:08.a lot about Olympic qualification that this rise is also part of the
:12:08. > :12:13.ITU World Championship series which has a seven-race battle, with the
:12:13. > :12:16.final in Beijing. That is next month. Your best four results count
:12:16. > :12:21.towards the World Championship and a lot of athletes have not really
:12:21. > :12:26.shown their hand at the moment. Barbara Riveros Diaz leads the way
:12:26. > :12:31.after a solid but rather unspectacular season. Paula Findlay
:12:31. > :12:33.came to prominence here in Hyde Park and has three wins but is
:12:33. > :12:37.suffering from a head injury. And suffering from a head injury. And
:12:37. > :12:41.Helen Jenkins with two second places, she is currently in six.
:12:41. > :12:50.Your commentators for the women's race are Matt Chilton and Steve
:12:50. > :12:58.COMMENTATOR: They are ready for the start here, Paul Findlay, the big
:12:58. > :13:08.favourite for this race. They did not race in Yokohama in Japan
:13:08. > :13:12.
:13:12. > :13:17.following the earthquake and That is the seen here in Hyde Park,
:13:17. > :13:24.they are way! 67 elite women triathletes diving into the
:13:24. > :13:34.Serpentine. To begin this Olympic test event. The real thing in a
:13:34. > :13:36.year from now. That will be the Olympic medal days here in Hyde
:13:37. > :13:40.Park and for the first time they are heading out of the park and
:13:40. > :13:46.into the streets and onto the streets of London, taking in some
:13:46. > :13:53.of the sites of this part of the world. Already they are beginning
:13:53. > :14:01.to spread. Just one single lap swim, last year they got out of the water
:14:01. > :14:06.and run along the pontoon and died staying in the water for the entire
:14:06. > :14:10.1.5 kilometres swim. Already two distinct groups beginning to form.
:14:10. > :14:16.Interesting there, Emma Moffatt on the nearside has really gone for it.
:14:16. > :14:23.What is critical on this no wet suits when, it will be very
:14:23. > :14:27.difficult to get away -- a no-wet suit swim. It will be a huge
:14:27. > :14:30.advantage... Every single one of these athletes is going to be
:14:30. > :14:36.looking for selection for their countries next year and they will
:14:36. > :14:41.put themselves on the line today. Emma Moffatt has really gone for it.
:14:42. > :14:46.And I know the Swiss athlete who has had a leg injury, and Laura
:14:46. > :14:53.Bennett she has been going on forever, she has got a case full of
:14:53. > :14:55.medals at home. She is in the best form of her life. But is fantastic.
:14:55. > :15:00.Spectacular scene and an early start for the women because of the
:15:00. > :15:10.problem with the road closures in London. The men will start and the
:15:10. > :15:14.afternoon for their race. The water temperature pretty cold in the
:15:15. > :15:20.water. Serpentine Lido open here as well, but no swimming during the
:15:20. > :15:24.past few weeks because of the oxygen levels. It was worrying for
:15:24. > :15:30.the fish stocks, they had to treat the water. Apparently oxygen levels
:15:30. > :15:40.are restored to a normal level now. Swimming has been allowed to resume
:15:40. > :15:44.
:15:44. > :15:51.for the recreational swimmers and In the opening section, just to
:15:51. > :15:58.remind you, 1,500m in the water. A 40, touch cycle, that involves
:15:58. > :16:03.seven laps around the park and streets of London -- 40 kilometres.
:16:03. > :16:13.There was a hint that Paula Findlay had gone early. It was touch and go.
:16:13. > :16:23.If she did go early, all of the others followed have. Ramires the
:16:23. > :16:26.
:16:26. > :16:29.us making a good start. -- Roddy Now the change in direction. A
:16:29. > :16:33.different layout for the swimming course this year because of the one
:16:34. > :16:38.lap stipulation, which is what they want to use in the Olympics. You
:16:38. > :16:43.can see the Serpentine Bridge. The crowd gathered. And a lot of argy-
:16:43. > :16:50.bargy, those that choose to go tight around the inflatable boys,
:16:50. > :16:53.there are a lot of flying elbows. People scramble for position in the
:16:53. > :16:58.water of the Serpentine. The Serpentine was the centrepiece for
:16:58. > :17:02.the celebrations in London in 1814 for the British victory at the
:17:02. > :17:08.Battle of Trafalgar. There are if you battles going on out there as
:17:08. > :17:17.they come around there. Do first sight of Helen Jenkins there. She
:17:17. > :17:21.has had a bit of the at breathing problem. It might be a -- a bit of
:17:21. > :17:26.a spiritual problem, it might be likely to affect her confidence.
:17:26. > :17:29.She is a previous world champion when nobody expected it. She loves
:17:29. > :17:33.the tough conditions. The conditions here today are very
:17:33. > :17:39.pleasant, very little wind, just under 22 degrees in the water and
:17:39. > :17:46.Helen needs to be up there. She just days to close that gap a
:17:46. > :17:51.little bit more on Laura Bennett and Sarah Haskins. With their wet
:17:51. > :17:54.suits, this transition should be lightning-fast. -- no wet suits.
:17:54. > :17:58.should be lightning-fast, they have nothing to think about other than
:17:58. > :18:01.getting on their bikes. You are looking at about 30 people and then
:18:02. > :18:05.there is a break. If you don't get into the first group, you won't
:18:05. > :18:08.make it back. It will be difficult to get back on and I am very
:18:08. > :18:14.surprised there is such a big group coming out of the water together
:18:14. > :18:19.right now. And then the final sprint, the
:18:19. > :18:25.first out of the water equals the first on to the bike for the 40, to
:18:25. > :18:31.his bike circuit. They will exit the park for the first time -- a 40
:18:31. > :18:37.kilometres. Her but the public will have to get used to it many times
:18:37. > :18:40.in they have next 12 months or so, there will be of many road closures.
:18:40. > :18:45.The swimming at the 2012 Olympics will also take place in the
:18:45. > :18:53.Serpentine, so it won't just be the triathlon. The open-water swimming
:18:53. > :19:00.matter and -- marathon also taking place. Approaching 90 minutes and
:19:00. > :19:04.approaching the steps and the run to transition -- 19. There will be
:19:04. > :19:07.a group of seven or eight are bunched together as they come to
:19:07. > :19:17.the steps to take them out of the the steps to take them out of the
:19:17. > :19:37.
:19:37. > :19:47.Lots of British interest here. Helen Jenkins is right up there,
:19:47. > :19:56.
:19:56. > :20:01.get their helmets on. The bikes are pushed to the white line. Then they
:20:01. > :20:10.can get on and they Exeter the blue carpet out on to the gravel. --
:20:10. > :20:15.exit. At group of a 30 potential riders in the first group. A few of
:20:15. > :20:19.the stragglers coming out but it is not too late. Two groups will form,
:20:19. > :20:23.it is likely they will come together to form one large peloton
:20:23. > :20:28.and they will all right together and form a spectacular sight
:20:28. > :20:32.through the park and out on the streets of London. Look at this,
:20:32. > :20:37.the series leader is just getting into transition now. How have is
:20:38. > :20:46.that affected by not having a wet suit? -- how will affected. That
:20:46. > :20:51.has but Barbara quite a way back down. They are on their way. Of 40
:20:51. > :20:56.kilometres. They begin in the park and they also exit the park, down
:20:56. > :21:04.constitution Hill, bisecting Green Park, down towards Buckingham
:21:04. > :21:11.Palace. A group of 30 also riders form in the peloton at the front of
:21:11. > :21:15.the field. I was hoping we would see a breakaway group. 30 is a lot
:21:15. > :21:20.of people and it is very difficult to get a group identity working
:21:20. > :21:23.through. We will see the athletes testing everybody else out. Is
:21:23. > :21:30.there anybody willing to come with me, and if you are, are you
:21:30. > :21:36.prepared to really work hard so we can try and break the field down?
:21:36. > :21:45.That is the scene in the park below us on the right. Sarah Haskins is
:21:45. > :21:49.just one a second clear of Sarah Groff. -- one second. Helen Jenkins
:21:49. > :21:59.is right up there, as is the Vicky Holland, and Jodie Stimpson. Lots
:21:59. > :21:59.
:21:59. > :22:02.of a British interest. -- lot of British interest. The British
:22:02. > :22:12.athletes are working at the front. Alan Jenkins is telling them to get
:22:12. > :22:17.
:22:17. > :22:21.to the front, let's do some work -- have visited London. We go round on
:22:21. > :22:26.a little loop in this part of the city where the road has been closed.
:22:26. > :22:30.Imagine the scene one year from now. This is a free event, there is no
:22:30. > :22:34.tickets required, anybody can come and watch on the streets of London.
:22:34. > :22:38.It is the first time they have been down here and tested the section of
:22:38. > :22:44.the course were the roads closed to traffic. We got our first glimpse
:22:44. > :22:47.of Paula Findlay there sitting happily on the back of the pack.
:22:47. > :22:51.The early attempts to make a break don't seem to have materialised. I
:22:51. > :22:57.think we will see more of that. The British athletes and the Australia
:22:57. > :23:00.athletes, Emma Moffatt in particular, very happy to work but
:23:00. > :23:04.will not do it by themselves. We will see some breaks going through
:23:04. > :23:13.but whether they can stay at the front, it is difficult. But we have
:23:13. > :23:18.somebody going for it here. Carey Lang. The -- Kerry. She is putting
:23:18. > :23:22.a marker down. She is saying, let's have a go for this, let's see if we
:23:22. > :23:26.can break away and get rid of some of the people who may be looking to
:23:26. > :23:32.run us down. Nobody going with her at the moment, nobody accepting
:23:32. > :23:36.that challenge. Very early to be going for it, very brave. Quite a
:23:36. > :23:40.big group here. What is the motivation for actually working on
:23:40. > :23:45.the front? There is a big motivation because there is a pack
:23:45. > :23:48.behind that contain some really good runners, so it even though
:23:48. > :23:52.some are not up in their best running form, they need to push on
:23:52. > :24:01.and make sure that gap from the second group grows. Is anybody in
:24:01. > :24:11.their working has domestic takes? It could be Lang at the front.
:24:11. > :24:11.
:24:11. > :24:20.as domestiques. She is not the best runner, carried. She isn't, but she
:24:20. > :24:26.is a good cyclist. Unfortunately, her running does let her down.
:24:26. > :24:35.This is Paula Findlay, dominant this year, the winner in Sydney, in
:24:35. > :24:45.Kitzbuehel. She has had a problem with her hip in the last few days.
:24:45. > :24:50.We will see if that affect so. -- affects her. You'll see the
:24:50. > :24:54.athletes through and past the transition in a very short time.
:24:54. > :24:58.Morrison of the Republic of Ireland at the back of the group. I think
:24:58. > :25:01.the reflection on their pace of the bikes, I think she was quite a long
:25:01. > :25:08.way down in the swim, and she has taken it all back on the first lap
:25:08. > :25:13.of the bikes. A very strong runner as well, we have seen that. That is
:25:13. > :25:21.the leading a group of four stop back into the beauty of Hyde Park -
:25:21. > :25:28.- that is the leading group of. They can take the applause from the
:25:28. > :25:33.grandstand as they complete the first lap of seven on this bike.
:25:33. > :25:42.would be interested to get a time check on that. We are getting the
:25:42. > :25:47.general confirmations coming up on the screen. Nicola is there, she
:25:47. > :25:52.has been working hard on her swimming. Anja Dittmer is still
:25:52. > :25:59.there, Jessica Harrison. Emma Snowsill is still there. We will
:25:59. > :26:05.check on how many are in that group. We think it is around 35, 40. 32,
:26:05. > :26:09.in fact, is the total number in this leading group. Again, I think
:26:10. > :26:18.if we hark back to the swim, we saw just how hard it was. If we broke
:26:18. > :26:23.this field in half, it is way over 30 seconds. Their pack are trying
:26:23. > :26:27.to get themselves a way, they have to close this gap a very early. So
:26:27. > :26:31.many of the athletes at the front, if they do work hard, they will put
:26:31. > :26:35.a significant a matter of time into the chases. 30 seconds is the
:26:35. > :26:41.difference between the first group of 32 and the chasing pack of six,
:26:41. > :26:46.who are then followed by another dozen. Those two will almost
:26:46. > :26:53.certainly form a hunting pack of 18 attempting to try and bridge the
:26:53. > :26:57.gap to the leading pack of 32. They are in one of the smartest parts of
:26:57. > :27:04.London. You can see the Government close by, you can see the Palace,
:27:04. > :27:08.the primary residence of the Queen. Originally known as Buckingham
:27:08. > :27:15.House. The original building was a large town house built for the Duke
:27:15. > :27:19.of Buckingham. The largest private garden in London. The East front
:27:19. > :27:26.contains that famous balcony on which the royal family judicially
:27:26. > :27:31.congregate. The -- traditionally. Of bought by George the Third as a
:27:31. > :27:37.private retreat for his wife Queen Charlotte, who had 15 children, 14
:27:37. > :27:40.of which were born in Buckingham Palace. I have seen a move by
:27:40. > :27:44.Jessica Harrison, looking to get off the front. Fredriksen is
:27:44. > :27:51.closing with her. Again, it does not look like a sustained attack at
:27:51. > :27:59.all. There is the standings leader, Barbara Riveros Diaz. She has and
:27:59. > :28:04.run a race -- have won a race this season but she has been consistent.
:28:04. > :28:11.And 98 clear of Paula Findlay of Canada, who has won the three races,
:28:11. > :28:15.but didn't take part in Hamburg in mid-July. They go under the archway,
:28:15. > :28:19.the Wellington Arch. What a backdrop that is, the statue on top
:28:19. > :28:28.is very impressive. A chariot come up with the three horses at the
:28:28. > :28:33.front and a winged figure on top of. Built between 1826 and 1830,
:28:33. > :28:41.designed by TSMS Burton, responsible for a lot of
:28:41. > :28:44.spectacular architecture we see this part of London. The chasing
:28:44. > :28:54.group there are just under one minute behind. The distance has
:28:54. > :28:56.
:28:56. > :28:59.concerted effort for this group to get back up there? It is the only
:28:59. > :29:08.way they will get involved in the prize money today. The gap is
:29:08. > :29:13.around 50 seconds or so, with the leading group and the chasers. The
:29:13. > :29:18.leaders, with Svenja Bazlen of Germany taking her time at the
:29:18. > :29:23.front. They will have been given a wake-up call, having seen the
:29:23. > :29:33.distance between this front peloton and the chasing group. Time for a
:29:33. > :29:38.
:29:38. > :29:47.bit of energy. Spirig, are also taking her opportunity. And Anne
:29:47. > :29:53.Laing -- and Kerry Lan has decided there has been enough hanging about.
:29:53. > :29:57.That is her third effort, so the energy expended on that, she hasn't
:29:57. > :30:00.managed to get away but nobody has matched and gone with her. Time is
:30:00. > :30:09.beginning to run out for those people who do want to try and make
:30:09. > :30:13.that break. Backward the chase group. -- back with. They have
:30:13. > :30:17.reduced the deficit by five or six seconds during the last lap. They
:30:17. > :30:27.now need to go again. They need to put some further pace into their
:30:27. > :30:31.
:30:31. > :30:35.efforts to bridge the gap between catching slowly, they are catching
:30:35. > :30:39.up. The second pack are working really well because we saw when
:30:39. > :30:42.they were on the first lap of the bike, it was a one-minute gap but
:30:42. > :30:47.now it is 30 seconds, so that his great work from the second pack.
:30:47. > :30:57.That will take it out of them, Willetts had them on the run?
:30:57. > :31:03.
:31:03. > :31:06.There's a few that are on the front view of London across the River
:31:06. > :31:16.Thames. A trio of British triathlete at the front of the
:31:16. > :31:22.
:31:22. > :31:28.field. Jenkins, Kerry Lang and significantly. The pace has really
:31:28. > :31:36.is off. You can say that two groups are about to become one huge pack.
:31:36. > :31:39.The leading group really eased off over the final section of that
:31:39. > :31:49.penultimate lap and now the leaders... Look at the group we
:31:49. > :31:52.
:31:52. > :31:56.have got here. There must be at the seat of government in Great
:31:56. > :32:03.Britain, Westminster Abbey on the right. The venue of the recent
:32:03. > :32:08.Royal Wedding. There's the London Eye, on the South Bank of the River
:32:08. > :32:18.Thames. They are the top of Constitution Hill for the final
:32:18. > :32:20.
:32:20. > :32:24.time. One of the smartest parts of London, Park Lane leading to Hyde
:32:24. > :32:29.Park Corner with the Ritz hotel not far away at the Dorchester Hotel,
:32:29. > :32:35.plenty of other high-class establishments in the vicinity.
:32:35. > :32:40.They will be back into Hyde Park, through the gates for the final
:32:40. > :32:46.time and then they will start to prepare for the arrival in
:32:46. > :32:50.transition. Look at that now, the jockeying for position. A single
:32:50. > :32:56.line now with less than one kilometre or a go, everybody
:32:56. > :33:00.sprinting around the edges. We see the hands and fingers going down,
:33:00. > :33:07.loosening in the FT and the shoes, the bare feet on top of the issues,
:33:07. > :33:13.the issues still clipped into the paddles. They want to get out. They
:33:13. > :33:18.may lose around 15, 20 seconds which is a long way going into the
:33:18. > :33:24.run. A couple of hundred metres to go until transition, a group of 60
:33:24. > :33:31.or so riders locked together in combat here. Just biding their time,
:33:31. > :33:35.some looking for some daylight over on the Ryders' right of the track.
:33:35. > :33:40.This could be spectacular. It could also be very chaotic with such a
:33:40. > :33:47.massive group coming in to hang up their bikes. There is a disbarred
:33:47. > :33:51.line. The leaders are there. They are getting off the back. They have
:33:51. > :33:55.rehearsed this. Lisa Norden in first. She will look for the place
:33:55. > :33:59.where she has to place the bike. Lisa Simpson, the first of the
:33:59. > :34:07.British riders, Helen Jenkins is through as well, she will be
:34:07. > :34:11.looking for a fast, effective transition. Sarah Haskins is
:34:11. > :34:17.through, and there's Emma Moffatt, the Olympic bronze medallist, she
:34:17. > :34:27.is on her way out. In it has turned into a running race. My money is on
:34:27. > :34:31.
:34:31. > :34:35.an Australian called Emma. There's 3 m as to look on. -- Emmas. One of
:34:35. > :34:38.them has got a huge confidence going into this race and also Paula
:34:38. > :34:48.Findlay, we know she has had a few injury niggles but she is world
:34:48. > :34:54.
:34:54. > :34:57.class. She is in with a great involved at the start of the lead
:34:57. > :35:00.group, that makes things very interesting. Helen Jenkins of Great
:35:00. > :35:09.Britain on the right of the screen, Emma Moffatt of Australia on the
:35:09. > :35:14.left. Jodie Stimpson just behind her. It is wide-open here. Nicola
:35:14. > :35:19.Spirig is there as well. She has been injured and running and
:35:19. > :35:24.swimming a lot, general fitness is very, very good but I think she has
:35:24. > :35:34.done an awful lot to get out there with Emma Moffatt. A big group out
:35:34. > :35:35.
:35:35. > :35:40.there with contention. We will see a big dropping off, I am sure.
:35:40. > :35:44.These have no bearing on what will happen with so many good runners.
:35:44. > :35:48.It is wide open here in Hyde Park and it is beginning to spread, that
:35:48. > :35:58.gives you an idea of the gap between the leading group which is
:35:58. > :36:01.
:36:01. > :36:07.now down to around 12 with a gap of about 10 metres to the next five.
:36:07. > :36:11.But the stretch beginning, I think that lead group of the 17 will be
:36:11. > :36:18.coming down one by one as the sheer pace of the run will force them off
:36:18. > :36:23.the back. Emma Snowsill has been left, a kick at the beginning of
:36:23. > :36:27.the field while we were watching the chases, a group of two or three
:36:27. > :36:34.started to inject some pace into the race. You can see there are
:36:34. > :36:40.free. I think Jenkins and Jodie Stimpson and Jackson are there and
:36:40. > :36:43.one other. That is certainly Jackson in 4th place. Let's check
:36:43. > :36:52.through, that is Helen Jenkins leading through. Helen Jenkins,
:36:52. > :37:02.Jodie Stimpson... A Emma Jackson, and the Japanese runner. Paula
:37:02. > :37:10.
:37:10. > :37:15.British woman has won in Hyde Park. Jodie Stimpson is on good form,
:37:15. > :37:25.Jenkins has come third. Ai Ueda of Japan has joined the leading
:37:25. > :37:27.
:37:27. > :37:31.quartet. That also includes Emma Jackson. We have a break away group,
:37:31. > :37:39.things really hotting up in the park. Be gathered by Helen Jenkins.
:37:39. > :37:45.He wants to get away from Paula Findlay. -- big effort by Paula
:37:45. > :37:51.Helen Jenkins. Jodie Stimpson looks up, she has got to cover... Emma
:37:51. > :37:58.Moffatt really falling behind there. Along with Paula Findlay. Those two,
:37:58. > :38:04.we know Paul Findlay -- Paula Findlay we know she's having injury
:38:04. > :38:09.problems. Helen is looking good. She is looking outstanding. Without
:38:09. > :38:12.Paula Findlay been on form, it has got to beat Helen's grace. Helen
:38:12. > :38:18.and Paula have battled it out in the past two World Championship
:38:18. > :38:21.Series races. We know that Paul has been injured so a very good chance
:38:21. > :38:27.that it is Helen's day today. COMMENTATOR: They are halfway
:38:27. > :38:34.through the run. Five kilometres Dan, five kilometres to go and the
:38:34. > :38:41.leader is Helen Jenkins from Great Britain. For twice a third here in
:38:41. > :38:45.the past and an hour and 43 minutes of swimming, biking and running
:38:45. > :38:55.with five kilometres still to go. Jodie Stimpson has been dropped
:38:55. > :38:55.
:38:55. > :39:03.down to around 6th position now. With a significant move being made
:39:04. > :39:08.by an your -- Anja Dittmer. We are just seeing a clear gap for the
:39:08. > :39:12.first time now. Alan Jenkins is not giving it at all and nor is Emma
:39:12. > :39:16.Jackson, she is chasing it through but the five-second gap may be up
:39:16. > :39:21.to eight seconds now. We must be closing in on around four
:39:21. > :39:25.kilometres to go but they have just drawn away from everybody else.
:39:25. > :39:30.Anja Dittmer she started relatively comfortably on the run and just
:39:30. > :39:34.beginning to break through but the first two, the leaders, really are
:39:34. > :39:40.getting a significant gap on the rest of the field. A shot over the
:39:40. > :39:50.Serpentine Bridge shows you the lead that Helen Jenkins has over
:39:50. > :39:52.
:39:52. > :40:01.her next-best rival, formerly Helen Tucker. Third twice on the podium
:40:01. > :40:11.here in London but never Victoria's. Possibly today. -- never victorious.
:40:11. > :40:15.
:40:15. > :40:18.Emma... Jackson beginning to lose her way. There she is with the end
:40:18. > :40:22.in sight, Helen Jenkins and the crowd beginning to show their
:40:22. > :40:32.appreciation. She has got a huge advantage now. Will it be enough to
:40:32. > :40:33.
:40:33. > :40:40.see her through this final lap? She has swum solidly. Now she leads
:40:40. > :40:44.with one lap to go. Look how easy it is for Helen Jenkins with 1.5
:40:44. > :40:49.kilometres to race, she is full of running. Enjoying this moment now.
:40:49. > :40:54.She can sense success at last in Hyde Park having twice finished in
:40:54. > :40:58.third position. Today, the victory is theirs. She will look over cross
:40:58. > :41:04.the like on the far side of the Serpentine from our commentary
:41:04. > :41:09.position. Going away from us but she will cross again and head back
:41:09. > :41:13.towards the blue carpet and the finishing line and fingers crossed,
:41:13. > :41:17.victory just a few minutes from now. Helen Jenkins leading the way still
:41:18. > :41:22.in Hyde Park and the battle for second and third continues.
:41:22. > :41:27.hammer went down there, didn't it? She opened the gap, Emma Jackson
:41:27. > :41:31.had gone back into the group, may be a bit of a second wind for Emma
:41:31. > :41:39.Jackson, the two Americans, Emma Snowsill fighting her way through
:41:39. > :41:45.and up now with Anja Dittmer, look at that. Helen Jenkins with about
:41:45. > :41:55.one kilometre to go. She looks so strong. Absolutely focused. Who is
:41:55. > :42:03.
:42:03. > :42:12.that in second place? That is... think that is when of America Gwen.
:42:12. > :42:17.That gives her selection. The Union flags are flying proudly in Hyde
:42:17. > :42:27.Park. Helen Jenkins has run an heroic race in the park today and
:42:27. > :42:28.
:42:28. > :42:32.has kicked away with fantastic timing. Jenkins will win in Hyde
:42:32. > :42:40.Park and will win comfortably. A massive margin, she has picked up
:42:40. > :42:44.her fight, she is beginning to celebrate. Jenkins cruising home
:42:45. > :42:50.now and starting to appreciate and savour the victory. Jenkins wins in
:42:50. > :42:56.Hyde Park, just over two hours, her time. What a win for her. Helen
:42:56. > :43:03.Jenkins, twice third in the pack wins today with America in second
:43:03. > :43:11.place and it is Anja Dittmer of Germany who comes in in third place.
:43:11. > :43:16.Jackson just pipping Emma Snowsill, the third Australians in 4th and
:43:16. > :43:21.5th. But from a British perspective, it is all about Helen Jenkins who
:43:21. > :43:26.has come close twice in the past but with one year to go as the
:43:26. > :43:31.Olympic countdown continues, Helen Jenkins is at the top of the table
:43:31. > :43:38.in Hyde Park. She will return as one of the favourites, fitness
:43:38. > :43:43.permitting, in 12 months from now to go for Olympic glory and gold.
:43:43. > :43:48.Helen Jenkins steps up to the highest point of the podium to
:43:48. > :43:58.accept her gold medal today. Will she be on the Olympic podium in 12
:43:58. > :44:38.
:44:38. > :44:46.months from now? Picking up an A day that Helen Jenkins will never
:44:46. > :44:49.forget. And I took it really easy, trying to get rid of the cold and I
:44:49. > :44:58.wasn't sure I could pull it out today, but the crowd were fantastic.
:44:58. > :45:02.They were so good shouting for me. I was shaking for you, everyone was.
:45:02. > :45:10.Ahmad last lap, I thought I was going to blow up. I was pushing
:45:10. > :45:15.right till the end. Better are so hard. There did you think coming
:45:15. > :45:23.into today, you would have such a big lead on a lap? Her idea that if
:45:24. > :45:33.it all went my way I could when, but I felt awful on the bike -- I
:45:33. > :45:37.had an idea. The first lap of the run, I was not sure. Then I got the
:45:37. > :45:43.lead and my husband was screaming at me, just keep going. We have
:45:43. > :45:49.done training sessions together and, so I was just used to him yelling
:45:49. > :45:53.at me to go faster. It is a real, it is a huge honour, I can only
:45:54. > :45:57.credit my coaches, my team-mates have helped me out as well.
:45:57. > :46:00.wasn't sure if I still had it in me because I am not of the youngest
:46:00. > :46:04.any more but I have lots of experience, and I don't know, I
:46:04. > :46:14.just pulled it together on the day when it counted the most this year,
:46:14. > :46:15.
:46:15. > :46:18.and I am just so happy. Happy with your performance today? Yes, apart
:46:18. > :46:23.from the last five killermacro, but everything else was moving in the
:46:23. > :46:27.right direction. --kilometre. what a joy impression of the
:46:28. > :46:33.course? It is phenomenal, but the spectators make this course and
:46:33. > :46:36.every year it gets better and today top it as well. I was running
:46:36. > :46:46.around Buckingham Palace, and a half of the people there were going,
:46:46. > :46:48.
:46:48. > :46:53.what was going on? You we have got Javier Gomez just setting up his
:46:54. > :46:58.transition spot. In -- we have got Javier Gomez.
:46:58. > :47:01.Richard, it was great to see the British winner at Hyde Park a year
:47:01. > :47:07.before the Olympics. It you couldn't ask for a better result.
:47:07. > :47:10.That is what we wanted to see. Helen was certainly after that. But
:47:10. > :47:19.she has come third twice and now she gets the wind while but said,
:47:19. > :47:23.it is the best preparation. -- she gets the wind this time out.
:47:23. > :47:28.she is not a big fan of the course, but she showed that it suits their.
:47:28. > :47:32.She struck out there in the run and stayed there. -- suits have.
:47:32. > :47:35.said in interview she wasn't feeling well, if that is how on a
:47:35. > :47:40.bad day, I look forward to seeing how in 12 months. They she said it
:47:40. > :47:46.really had. It is always going to. It might be hurting during the race
:47:46. > :47:50.but when you crossed the line, you forget about the pain. Obviously
:47:50. > :47:55.there was something wrong but even on a bad day, she is a win a four-
:47:55. > :48:00.star she fits the qualification criteria for the Olympics. -- she
:48:00. > :48:03.is a winner. She fits the qualification criteria. They put
:48:03. > :48:07.people forward at the end of September and Helen will be one of
:48:07. > :48:11.those people. If there are no more podiums in Beijing, they may not
:48:11. > :48:15.put anyone else forward. But Helen is almost certainly going to go to
:48:15. > :48:20.the Olympics. Of but we cannot categorically say that until the
:48:20. > :48:23.end of June next year, and tear goes forward in front of the
:48:23. > :48:27.National Committee. We will have to wait until that period where there
:48:27. > :48:34.are three names for the event going forward and they are accepted.
:48:34. > :48:40.are going to be the girls getting under way of Helen next year? Paula
:48:40. > :48:50.Findlay wasn't have to fit. If we look back at the last Olympic Games,
:48:50. > :48:53.it could be anyone. If he -- Paula Findlay wasn't to fit. There wasn't
:48:53. > :48:58.a bad back but there were a couple of contenders, but if we are going
:48:58. > :49:06.to form, it could be anyone. Helen has certainly set herself up
:49:06. > :49:10.brilliantly, but the Australians, Emma Moffatt and Emma Snowsill, and
:49:10. > :49:15.a host of other athletes. So it will be interesting to see what
:49:15. > :49:19.happens, who comes out. Paula Findlay from Canada, not on form at
:49:19. > :49:25.the moment with an injury but she has so she can win. If you are
:49:25. > :49:30.Helen, how would you spend your winter so you know you are at your
:49:30. > :49:37.best? The pressure is off have. She has done all she can do to get in
:49:37. > :49:40.the team, -- off her. She will be selected, it is pretty much 99%.
:49:40. > :49:46.She is now focused on staying in the best shape that she can, the
:49:46. > :49:50.best shape she can for the next 12 months. I spoke to her husband and
:49:51. > :49:54.his words were that she is bullet proof in the gym. So she is in
:49:54. > :49:59.their everyday, looking after that body and keeping all of the muscles
:49:59. > :50:02.working, -- there. That will reduce the chances of injury and she will
:50:02. > :50:06.work harder this winter and going to the Olympic year in the best
:50:06. > :50:15.shape. There are the other British girls who could get an Olympic
:50:15. > :50:19.sport? We are looking at Jodie Stimpson, she is on the way up. She
:50:19. > :50:24.ran a race a week ago, Olympic distance, she won that race and she
:50:24. > :50:29.has backed it up with 14th on the Olympic course. She is really
:50:29. > :50:33.stating her case. But to be honest, the criteria as such, she needs to
:50:33. > :50:39.get on the podium. That is the case for all of the goals. They have to
:50:39. > :50:45.get on the podium at the World Championship race. That will put
:50:45. > :50:49.them in contention. If a British win has but -- inspired you to get
:50:49. > :50:59.into the water, here is how you can get involved.
:50:59. > :51:06.
:51:06. > :51:14.Kerman. The big splash, everyone is doing good. To find out more, busy
:51:14. > :51:16.at the BBC website. It is not every day you see George Alagiah in
:51:17. > :51:20.goggles, and not every day that world champions and gold medal
:51:20. > :51:25.hopes have to sit opposite their main rivals get the breakfast table,
:51:25. > :51:32.but that is beat Beal at the Brownlee home. The last time we saw
:51:32. > :51:36.them here, we witnessed a very different story. Johne was
:51:36. > :51:46.sprinting have out of the shadow of his brother, and Alastair falling
:51:46. > :51:46.
:51:46. > :51:51.away. They have spent the last winter taking stock.
:51:51. > :51:54.Javier Gomez wins the London triathlon. Jonathan Brownlee has
:51:54. > :52:02.come past his brother do takes second. What has happened to
:52:02. > :52:07.Alistair Brownlee? I had no memory until I woke up on the bed. Of I
:52:07. > :52:11.had no -- a shocking day. Terrible side, Alistair Brownlee gave it
:52:11. > :52:16.absolutely everything and more. Just a bit wary now, because I know
:52:16. > :52:23.you can be as fit as you can be and a tiny thing goes wrong on the day
:52:23. > :52:28.and it has massive consequences. The brothers preparations began in
:52:28. > :52:33.November, heading to Lanzarote. It may have been a sunbathing weather,
:52:33. > :52:42.but there was little time for preparation and rest. It is quite
:52:42. > :52:46.windy, it doesn't feel heart. It feels nice. -- hot. One of the best
:52:46. > :52:52.things about being here is it doesn't get dark before 4pm. It is
:52:52. > :52:57.nice having a bit more daylight. But by the new year, there was no
:52:57. > :53:00.escaping the British climate. have got to learn to adapt to the
:53:01. > :53:04.conditions. You get the training in Bucher don't worry about making it
:53:04. > :53:10.too hard for yourself, it is counter-productive -- but you don't
:53:10. > :53:14.worry. A persistent ankle injury was hampering his training and
:53:14. > :53:18.affecting his mental preparation. It is do not knowing that is the
:53:18. > :53:24.worst part, you don't know what the injury is. Once you know what it is
:53:24. > :53:27.and how to Hewitt, it is getting all right. Alistair Brownlee was
:53:27. > :53:32.still the man to beat but it was clear his brother was a quiet be
:53:32. > :53:38.confident of a strong year to come. He was the world champion in 2009,
:53:39. > :53:43.he keeps on improving but I have to believe I can beat him. Belief can
:53:43. > :53:49.take you long way. At the opening World Championship Series event in
:53:49. > :53:54.Sydney, Jonathan had a very good day. Unlike his brother. In the
:53:54. > :53:58.race, everything seemed to go wrong. I punctured at the end of the bike.
:53:58. > :54:04.I got around the run and I fell over and I thought, can anything
:54:04. > :54:10.else go wrong? Jonathan came in second in Sydney behind reigning
:54:10. > :54:17.world champion Javier Gomez. It would be the Template for his year.
:54:17. > :54:27.Sydney was absolutely shocking. After that, it picked up of. I one
:54:27. > :54:27.
:54:27. > :54:33.in Madrid and Jonathan was second. -- I won. Alistair Brownlee will
:54:33. > :54:39.take victory for the second time here in his career. I seem to
:54:39. > :54:44.always be second. At I will start their World Series, I have gone up
:54:44. > :54:47.to number 55, and that I would say goodbye to him and say I will see
:54:47. > :54:52.you down the line, but now I am getting used to be rain to bid
:54:52. > :54:56.higher. I am really pleased with my season so far -- to be in the ranks
:54:56. > :54:59.for a bit higher. Spain was the backdrop for the European
:54:59. > :55:04.Championships. It would be the final chance for the brothers to
:55:04. > :55:08.assess their form before London. And it was good. Despite a puncture,
:55:08. > :55:14.Alistair Brownlee dragged himself back into contention thanks to some
:55:14. > :55:22.Tour de France style orders and some brotherly love. Another family
:55:23. > :55:27.one, two, with Javier Gomez way After their Spanish adventure, it
:55:27. > :55:30.was time to sample the restoring air of the Swiss Alps. It is a
:55:30. > :55:35.really nice place to train at this time of year. It is altitude as
:55:35. > :55:40.well, which is important. It hopefully get she that bit fitter.
:55:40. > :55:44.But the training camp was hopefully at -- as much about attitude as
:55:44. > :55:48.altitude. With the chances of Olympic qualification grown nearer,
:55:48. > :55:53.this was a time to reflect and focus on what would be needed for a
:55:53. > :55:57.year a head. Every race we have done since Sydney was break
:55:57. > :56:00.complete success, so I think we are learning more and more about how to
:56:00. > :56:04.train and how to recover and get ready for races. It is something we
:56:04. > :56:10.have both got a lot better at. Preparing for races and being at
:56:10. > :56:14.your best on race day. Alistair Brownlee has such a
:56:14. > :56:19.fantastic record in the series so far. He has won nine out of the 12
:56:19. > :56:23.races he has competed in. It is amazing, an outstanding record. The
:56:23. > :56:29.other athletes are looking at him. He has had a couple of hiccups, one
:56:29. > :56:33.of them being here last year when a stomach upset caused him to fade in
:56:33. > :56:38.the last kilometre of the race. But he is a force to be reckoned with.
:56:38. > :56:42.And there isn't just one of them, there is two of them, and that is
:56:42. > :56:47.the scariest thing for the rest of the world. You are taking on one
:56:47. > :56:52.and then another pops up. John of them came second here last year, it
:56:52. > :56:56.feels like he is coming into his own -- Jonathan. It is because they
:56:56. > :57:00.train together, and that is unique in triathlon. I can't think of any
:57:00. > :57:06.other siblings that have worked it together quite like this. They feed
:57:06. > :57:09.off each other. Rather than being a hindrance, it is a help of. They
:57:09. > :57:19.are almost communicating telepathic Kate. They know what the other is
:57:19. > :57:24.doing. -- Papa thickly. We saw it at the European Championships.
:57:24. > :57:28.then Alastair went and beat Jonathan into first place! They
:57:28. > :57:33.probably sat and greed that once they got to the bike ride, it is a
:57:33. > :57:36.free for all -- agreed. I think what we will see other the next
:57:36. > :57:42.year's is Alistair Brownlee dominating but Jonathan coming up
:57:42. > :57:46.to him. Bash over the next year's. We could have a great scenario for
:57:46. > :57:50.the British team where both of them are going head to head. It is the
:57:50. > :57:54.unique dynamic but you think that Jonathan is almost sacrificing
:57:54. > :58:00.himself to help his brother? You think he will start winning on his
:58:00. > :58:05.own? They are going to look to help each other. Alistair Brownlee will
:58:05. > :58:10.help Jonathan Brownlee and vice versa. When a third British person
:58:10. > :58:14.gets into the men's team, I think they will work as a team naturally.
:58:14. > :58:19.They are so close that the next member of the team will just have
:58:19. > :58:24.to gel and work with that. Britain has such a strong field in the
:58:24. > :58:27.men's triathlon. Why has Team GB failed to convert the success in
:58:27. > :58:30.the World Championships in to the Olympic medals? There is a
:58:30. > :58:34.statistic out there that Great Britain are one of the strongest if
:58:34. > :58:39.not the strongest a major go back to World Championships, at any
:58:39. > :58:43.distance or any age group within this sport. We haven't converted
:58:43. > :58:52.that to it at a Olympic medal yet. The elusive Olympic medal. It is
:58:52. > :58:57.not something that you can easily prepare for. We had a great result,
:58:57. > :59:01.the finishing 6th, but it has never gone to form, apart from that one
:59:01. > :59:04.Emma Snowsill victory. The other medal seemed to have come from
:59:04. > :59:09.nowhere and you are not quite sure what is going to happen. That is
:59:09. > :59:12.the thing about the Olympics. Hopefully this time, it will be the
:59:12. > :59:16.exception proving the rule, but the Brownlee brothers getting on the
:59:17. > :59:20.podium. They are the stars of the British triathlon but they are not
:59:20. > :59:30.guaranteed success today. There are a lot of other names to watch out
:59:30. > :59:30.
:59:30. > :59:36.Don Tim Don is the old man of the British team but it is too early to
:59:36. > :59:40.write off the 2006 champion. still love the sport, and I would
:59:40. > :59:46.love my daughter to come and watch me next year in 2012 and tell their
:59:46. > :59:49.grandchildren that her dad was an Olympian.
:59:49. > :59:53.Triathlon's Mr consistent over the last five years and they've
:59:53. > :59:58.reigning world champion, Javier Gomez of is the Brown the brothers
:59:58. > :00:05.strongest competition. A grinder rather than a sprinter, watching
:00:05. > :00:09.try and break the field early on. - - watch him. Everybody is motivated,
:00:09. > :00:13.all of the athletes are trying to do their best here. It is going to
:00:14. > :00:18.be an interesting race. The it has been a breakthrough here
:00:18. > :00:25.for Great Britain's William Clarke. He secured his first world senior
:00:25. > :00:29.series podium place in Hamburg. have got probably the hardest team
:00:29. > :00:34.in the world to qualify, so I am trying to try my hardest and try
:00:34. > :00:40.and get prepared enough and will hopefully produce a good
:00:40. > :00:50.performance. The German was a surprise when at
:00:50. > :00:52.
:00:53. > :00:58.the Beijing Games but he is no one- My motivation is unparalleled and I
:00:58. > :01:02.think that is my biggest advantage. SONALI SHAH: And make it about five
:01:02. > :01:06.minutes to go until the race. We have seen will Clarke and the
:01:06. > :01:10.Brownlee brothers make their way down the transition area to go on
:01:10. > :01:14.to the pontoon for the start of the race, what will be going through
:01:14. > :01:18.their heads? They are focused solely on what they are doing. A
:01:18. > :01:25.massive cheer went up for both will Clarke and the Brownlee brothers.
:01:25. > :01:29.If that was this year, what will it be like next year?! We have got 10
:01:29. > :01:36.dom walking down, he looks pensive, he wants to race faster -- we have
:01:36. > :01:38.got Tim Don coming down. They have been into the warm-up already so
:01:38. > :01:47.they have had the visualisation process going in and some of the
:01:47. > :01:51.athletes will be getting a bit cold so they put these jackets on. This
:01:51. > :01:57.guy from Germany coming down, he is not called at all. This is not a
:01:57. > :02:02.wet suits when so they are just in their triathlon suit. That can
:02:02. > :02:12.affect athletes in certain ways. Strong swimmers prefer the no wet
:02:12. > :02:12.
:02:13. > :02:16.suit swim. The Brownlee brothers, will Clarke and Stuart Hayes all
:02:16. > :02:22.prefer that. They earlier we saw the transition spots getting ready,
:02:22. > :02:26.how important is that part of the race? I have heard that described
:02:26. > :02:34.as the 4th race. He get, the four of discipline. It has got to be
:02:34. > :02:38.slick. -- the 4th discipline. You will see less than a second
:02:38. > :02:43.separating the fastest and slowest among the athletes, but you can
:02:43. > :02:47.lose the race in transition. You got to make sure that as you, in
:02:47. > :02:51.from this one on to the bike, super-fast on to the back. And then
:02:51. > :02:59.on to the run, the trainers: Quickly and you are plough back in
:02:59. > :03:03.contention. -- the trainers, on quickly. It is it highly detailed,
:03:03. > :03:07.the transition was back yes, that should the night before the race,
:03:07. > :03:13.they use elastic laces on their trainers and will be sliding them
:03:13. > :03:21.on and off. They will have a routine for left or right foot
:03:21. > :03:24.first. Just go for it, somebody else might be right and then left
:03:25. > :03:28.thought, some other athletes might be the other way round. If they get
:03:28. > :03:33.that done correctly, they have got a good chance on to the run. What
:03:33. > :03:37.will be going through their minds now? Probably just this one at the
:03:37. > :03:42.moment. Not about the whole race? don't think so, they may be running
:03:42. > :03:47.through that quickly but really, the start of the swim is so
:03:47. > :03:54.important. At first minute, minute and a half when everybody on the
:03:54. > :04:03.track starts to fast, and when I am coaching, I say don't start fast,
:04:03. > :04:08.but at the level we are at here, they have to start fast. And then
:04:08. > :04:13.later in the race they can begin to get their breath back, they haven't
:04:13. > :04:19.got to get a good position to take it by the scruff of the net. As we
:04:19. > :04:23.mentioned earlier, this is one of the seven races in the ITU series,
:04:23. > :04:26.and as it stands no, they don't necessarily reflect he will
:04:26. > :04:29.necessarily win after the Beijing Grand Final next month. That is
:04:29. > :04:34.because athletes are quite strategic about which raised they
:04:34. > :04:38.choose to take part in. As it stands, Javier Gomez won here last
:04:38. > :04:48.year is the leader of the pack but has not been up to usual high
:04:48. > :04:49.
:04:49. > :04:55.standards lately. Consistency has paid off for Wiliam Clarke and the
:04:55. > :05:05.Brownlees sticking together in 7th and 8. We handed to our commentary
:05:05. > :05:11.
:05:11. > :05:14.downpour of rain happened earlier and above us, there are clouds
:05:14. > :05:22.which may provide some precipitation as the race unfolds.
:05:22. > :05:27.But the elite men are lined up on the pontoon ready to dive into the
:05:27. > :05:33.Serpentine for a 1.5 kilometre swim followed by a 40 kilometre bike
:05:33. > :05:42.ride and 10 kilometres run to round things off. The Brownlee brothers
:05:42. > :05:49.at the extreme right of the pontoon. They are getting set, silver of
:05:49. > :05:59.Portugal as well. 7 and 8 worn by the Brownlee brothers, eight for
:05:59. > :06:09.
:06:09. > :06:15.Jonathan, seven for Alistair athletes. This is the elite race of
:06:15. > :06:22.the day. The crowd is ready and the helicopter up above. Now they step
:06:22. > :06:26.forward and the way they go. Racing in the Serpentine, 1.5 kilometres
:06:26. > :06:31.in the water, not as warm as yesterday but still no need for wet
:06:31. > :06:36.suits and they are scrambling for positions early on. Time to say
:06:36. > :06:40.good afternoon to Steve Trew. afternoon, a fascinating race and
:06:40. > :06:43.the women's grace was absolutely tremendous. What a fantastic
:06:43. > :06:48.victory by Helen Jenkins but the men I think will be just as
:06:48. > :06:53.exciting. I wonder if you will see the same tactics. We had a fairly
:06:53. > :06:58.slow laid-back bike yesterday, I think with the men we may be seen
:06:58. > :07:04.attack after attack after attack. I am told there are 112 turns on the
:07:04. > :07:08.bike course and with that, that is pretty exceptional. Interesting to
:07:08. > :07:13.see where Alistair Brownlee and Jonathan put themselves in the swim,
:07:13. > :07:18.they will want clean water and also interesting that we had Simon
:07:18. > :07:22.Whitfield, the Olympic champion and Chris McCormick getting on to the
:07:23. > :07:32.pontoon relatively late because their current rankings at world
:07:33. > :07:38.
:07:38. > :07:42.level may be at a bit of a France at the front. We have seen
:07:42. > :07:47.him in the past that he could lead swimmers out of the water but
:07:47. > :07:56.falling away as they get on to the bike. This is a look back at the
:07:56. > :08:02.start, clean start for both of the Brownlee brothers. The way they go
:08:02. > :08:05.into clean water, looking for clear water at every opportunity. It is a
:08:05. > :08:11.different course in the Serpentine this year. In the past, they have
:08:11. > :08:15.come out of the water after 750 metres and dive back in. The
:08:15. > :08:19.Olympic specifications don't allow for that so this year, as it is an
:08:19. > :08:24.Olympic test event, they will stay in the water and swim in this
:08:24. > :08:29.direction and come back and swim past the pontoon towards the
:08:29. > :08:38.eastern end of the Serpentine before returning and exiting via
:08:38. > :08:44.the carpeted steps running towards their bikes. Bent and -- then
:08:44. > :08:47.another new element is towards Park Lane, through the Wellington Arch
:08:47. > :08:51.and down Constitution Hill all are barely a hill there, past
:08:51. > :08:55.Buckingham Palace, round the Victoria Memorial and back up
:08:55. > :09:01.towards the park. A few dark clouds around. We had a burst of rain a
:09:01. > :09:05.while ago, the forecast has suggested that we may get more. The
:09:05. > :09:10.arrowhead with the leading swimmers cutting through the clean water and
:09:10. > :09:18.the others jostling for position, where they need to avoid elbows and
:09:18. > :09:21.arms at the forthcoming term. Raphael leading there and I was
:09:21. > :09:28.expecting the Russians to get out on the lead and that is quite
:09:28. > :09:37.surprising. We have talked a little bit about team tactics before.
:09:37. > :09:43.Possibly wondering whether to bring in David Hauss, we are also looking
:09:43. > :09:53.at another of the German athletes, he did not make the German team for
:09:53. > :09:54.
:09:54. > :10:02.the Olympic Games last time that he onto the Serpentine with the crowds
:10:02. > :10:06.four deep there. This is the first term. Raphael is the first through,
:10:06. > :10:11.and brings get a bit interesting behind him. It is carnage out there
:10:11. > :10:16.sometimes, it can be really painful. Swimming goggles can be lost and it
:10:16. > :10:19.can be a kick in painful parts, a real Scrabble which we have seen in
:10:19. > :10:25.the past, some of the elite athletes have been fished out of
:10:25. > :10:30.the water by the men in kayaks. It can be very dangerous sometimes.
:10:30. > :10:34.Interesting watching this one has come past. Past the first turning
:10:34. > :10:39.point and Alistair Brownlee was not in the top 10, you can see how
:10:39. > :10:44.difficult it is as they go past the third point and I was fascinated to
:10:44. > :10:48.see how the Brownlee brothers chose their starting position. They had a
:10:48. > :10:55.good choice and they chose to go way over on the right hand side.

:35:28. > :35:32.ride but looking to get the good position going into the third
:35:32. > :35:35.discipline. Alistair Brownlee, 23 and educated at Bradford Grammar
:35:35. > :35:40.School and then gained a place at Cambridge to study medicine and
:35:40. > :35:48.decided to give that up and attend the University of Lydd where he did
:35:48. > :35:52.a psychology of sport degree in 2009 -- University of Leeds. He put
:35:53. > :36:00.in a big effort in Beijing but maybe spent too much energy then.
:36:00. > :36:04.He was young then, and the winner in 2009, taking pictures in Madrid,
:36:04. > :36:11.London in Hyde Park and the Gold Coast. The umbrellas are up but the
:36:12. > :36:16.spirits are not dampened yet. The front of the field sees union flags
:36:16. > :36:24.worn by Alistair Brownlee and Jonathan Brownlee as well. Jonathan,
:36:25. > :36:31.the younger of the two, educated also at Bradford Grammar. Studying
:36:31. > :36:41.history at Lydd University. He did well in Lausanne, but that is
:36:41. > :36:43.
:36:43. > :36:53.coming up on the BBC shortly as they are. We are not getting the
:36:53. > :36:53.
:36:54. > :36:58.big move. We had never be seeming to be willing to go out and push.
:36:58. > :37:01.Maybe a bit of slowing down because of the weather conditions. Most
:37:01. > :37:07.unpleasant for spectators. Very unpleasant indeed for the cyclists
:37:07. > :37:11.out there. They have got the sunglasses on, wearing shades and
:37:11. > :37:15.they will get drops of rain on them. If they are not wearing shades, but
:37:15. > :37:19.will make it is even worse. They will get the wind and rain coming
:37:19. > :37:24.into their eyes. Making it tough out there on the bike. Making the
:37:24. > :37:31.general group psychology thinking that they should just get through
:37:31. > :37:36.it. They don't want people going out of contention. Maybe a little
:37:36. > :37:42.bit of confidence for the run later on. Under the arch of the second
:37:42. > :37:48.time. A chariot drawn by four horses, not three as I said
:37:48. > :37:51.yesterday. A relatively new addition to the arch from 1912. It
:37:51. > :37:58.symbolises the Angel Of Peace descending on the chariot of war.
:37:58. > :38:08.And apparently it is the largest bronze sculpture in Europe. They
:38:08. > :38:10.are going down Constitution Hill for the second time. Try to keep
:38:10. > :38:16.the sunglasses trouble wherever possible. The rain is coming and
:38:16. > :38:20.going. Quite intense two minutes ago but it has eased off now.
:38:20. > :38:24.Stuart Hayes we saw there, adjusting his glasses. Good news
:38:24. > :38:28.for the Brits. We thought he was in the lead pack but we are just
:38:28. > :38:32.waiting for confirmation coming through and we can confirm that now.
:38:32. > :38:39.No news still on Tim Don, but with the two packs joined together, Tim
:38:39. > :38:49.Don will have been in the regroup. Five British athletes in there. We
:38:49. > :38:55.
:38:55. > :39:04.have not seen Alastair or and Jonathan Brownlee go towards the
:39:04. > :39:08.back of the front group. Kris Gemmell we caught earlier on, we
:39:08. > :39:14.will see if anyone is willing to go with him at the front. His team-
:39:14. > :39:19.mate at 37, another New Zealander, and the I love London signed on
:39:19. > :39:29.that umbrella. It does make a fantastic backdrop for this
:39:29. > :39:36.
:39:36. > :39:41.Well into their second lap of seven now. 37 has been joined by seven,
:39:41. > :39:45.37 is James L Murray, he has made a bit of a break and has been joined
:39:45. > :39:49.by Alistair Brownlee on his side. These two are putting pace into the
:39:49. > :39:56.front of the field. That looks to be significant because Alastair is
:39:56. > :40:02.looking behind, he is worried about whether it will be Jonathan
:40:03. > :40:08.bringing the chase. The New Zealand are getting out of the saddle.
:40:08. > :40:15.Doing his bit of work now. Will we be seeing a reaction from the first
:40:15. > :40:21.group? Second group closing very quickly. You can see how damp it is
:40:21. > :40:25.now with the rain getting on to our camera lens. That is at the back of
:40:25. > :40:32.the second group. We are approaching 50 races. The New
:40:32. > :40:36.Zealand are closely shadowed by Alistair Brownlee who is about to
:40:36. > :40:39.be joined by a Alexander Brukhankov of Russia. The Russian has made it
:40:39. > :40:46.3 at the front. And these are watching them go off into the
:40:46. > :40:49.distance. Will they respond and when? Well, well, well, we have a
:40:49. > :40:53.group of three going away. Interesting that Alistair Brownlee
:40:53. > :41:01.going away, and Jonathan Brownlee has not attempted to bridge the gap.
:41:01. > :41:05.At the start wandering when you talk about team tactics, you are
:41:05. > :41:11.wondering if the message get out, whether they hold out and wait and
:41:11. > :41:19.see. And also criteria for selection is getting on the podium
:41:19. > :41:26.here and the other race that is significant which is Beijing. Maybe
:41:26. > :41:29.Jonathan Brownlee is putting his place at a bit of risk. With the
:41:29. > :41:34.big man and Alexander Brukhankov working hard at the front, you do
:41:34. > :41:39.seem to have a bit of time now between those three and the big
:41:39. > :41:44.pack. I make it about 10 seconds. That is the early gap and there's
:41:44. > :41:49.Tim Don, in for position leading the chases through. Not the best
:41:49. > :41:59.swimmer so always taking a bit of time to get involved but he now
:41:59. > :41:59.
:41:59. > :42:04.will get encouraged. Now we see the sun come out and we always see Tim
:42:05. > :42:10.Don encouraging his competitors around to take their turn to put in
:42:10. > :42:16.the work and he will be say that they cannot afford to let that trio,
:42:16. > :42:22.the New Zealand athletes, Alexander Brukhankov and Brownlee get away.
:42:22. > :42:31.Tim Don is such a good athlete. He is not too happy and confident at
:42:31. > :42:35.the moment, we have seen that earlier this year and in a one off
:42:36. > :42:41.race, he is still putting a lot back. For five laps to go with a
:42:41. > :42:44.threatening dark cloud in the background, will it dumps
:42:44. > :42:48.significant rainfall on this course? That should liven up this
:42:48. > :42:53.already enjoyable section. The main pack coming through and encouraged
:42:53. > :42:57.by the crowds who have come out. In the tens of thousands. Alexander
:42:57. > :43:06.Brukhankov, the first man through. Getting a check on the other names
:43:06. > :43:15.making up this large chasing group. Sandwiched between them, Alistair
:43:15. > :43:20.Brownlee of Great Britain between Brukhankov. It will not be an easy
:43:20. > :43:24.group to break without a concerted effort. I guess a bit of disquiet
:43:24. > :43:30.in the pack, a bit of uncertainty with the rain coming through. We
:43:30. > :43:34.saw everybody adjusting sunglasses. People backing off the speed a bit.
:43:34. > :43:37.With the bravery of the three getting away, that has made a
:43:37. > :43:41.difference. You take your chances and if it works, you have got a
:43:41. > :43:45.significant gap and you can build on that for the run. It was the
:43:45. > :43:53.Charles the first he changed the nature of Hyde Park. Completely
:43:53. > :43:57.when he opened it to be public. Thousands of Londoners fled the
:43:57. > :44:03.city and camped in the park in the hope of escaping the Great plague.
:44:03. > :44:09.A bit of history for you there. A different sort of event going on
:44:09. > :44:13.here today for the thousands of Londoners who have watched this in
:44:13. > :44:23.anticipation of the Olympic triathlon, the 4th one to take
:44:23. > :44:24.
:44:24. > :44:30.place, on 5th August. A constant checking with Alastair Brown are
:44:30. > :44:36.looking behind. Two things going through his mind, is my brother
:44:36. > :44:39.there and other making inroads on the pack? Alexander Brukhankov
:44:40. > :44:43.sitting at the back, he did so much work getting into the lead back
:44:43. > :44:50.when he has put down the hammer. He is a big, strong man but they are
:44:50. > :44:59.working so well together. I stick my position, I love to see the
:44:59. > :45:09.athletes getting up front, -- I stake my position on this. Brownlee
:45:09. > :45:17.
:45:17. > :45:20.37. James. He is the meat in the sandwich. These three have really
:45:21. > :45:27.widened the gap and there will be concern in the chasing group that
:45:27. > :45:32.it does not grow too large to counter. I think I read that right,
:45:33. > :45:37.17 seconds, the gap on that. I am watching Alistair Brownlee's feet
:45:37. > :45:41.to turn around on the pedals. And he seems to have opted for a
:45:41. > :45:44.slightly smaller deer and the Russian and the Kiwi and if he can
:45:44. > :45:49.maintain his position, that will make his legs feel a bit fresher
:45:49. > :45:54.going into the run. He is not using the big here that will take a lot
:45:54. > :45:57.of the impact but turning over that much faster, he will be in a nice
:45:57. > :46:05.position if they can maintain his breakaway. There's the massive
:46:05. > :46:09.chasing group. Almost all of the remaining 67 starters are in the
:46:09. > :46:19.group. The trio out in front and there's a concerted effort from one
:46:19. > :46:20.
:46:20. > :46:28.of the Australians now, and that would be Kahlefeldt possibly. He is
:46:28. > :46:32.trying to bridge that gap under the Wellington Arch trying to make an
:46:32. > :46:38.attempt on this lead held by these three who are already going down
:46:38. > :46:44.Constitution Hill, the sight of three unsuccessful assassination
:46:44. > :46:49.attempts against Queen Victoria. That was during her reign. Sir
:46:49. > :46:54.Robert Peel wasn't quite so lucky, thrown from his horse and succeeded
:46:54. > :46:57.the Duke of Wellington. He was thrown from his horse on
:46:57. > :47:00.Constitution Hill and died three days later, when he was Prime
:47:00. > :47:05.Minister. There's Helen Jenkins, the winner
:47:05. > :47:08.of yesterday's race. Seeing herself on the big screen smiling broadly
:47:09. > :47:18.and taking a break from the commentary, and have a word with
:47:19. > :47:21.
:47:21. > :47:27.actually trying to help Alistair Brownlee during this race. Alistair
:47:27. > :47:31.is off the front, that small pack of a three, and any time somebody
:47:31. > :47:35.attacks that pack, Jonathan Brownlee will sit on the wheel of
:47:35. > :47:39.of the person next to the attack and make no effort to make a turn,
:47:39. > :47:44.and eventually slower the pack down. So the brothers are working
:47:44. > :47:53.together, but we can't see the real evidence, it is hidden within the
:47:53. > :47:57.race itself. Interesting, Richard Stannard's take on that. We will
:47:57. > :48:00.see if the gap widens significantly. We did see one of the Australians
:48:00. > :48:06.going off the front, obviously getting fed up with Jonathan
:48:06. > :48:09.Brownlee's tactics. Maybe he is trying to counter it. Alistair is
:48:09. > :48:15.making the most of this opportunity and these three are working really
:48:15. > :48:20.well. Brukhankov coming past. They are chopping and changing with the
:48:20. > :48:25.hard work at the front and taking time to refuel. It is a good little
:48:25. > :48:34.trio. She it is, and they have stayed away for a long time, no
:48:34. > :48:40.significant breaks like the women - - it is. Tim Don is in the chasing
:48:40. > :48:44.pack. It is something they have committed now, and once they have
:48:44. > :48:48.make that commitment, to fall back into the pack, they are going to
:48:48. > :48:56.beat at a disadvantage. You very rarely see an effective brake
:48:56. > :49:00.staying away. They have got to try and stay awake. As Richard said, at
:49:00. > :49:04.the team tactics are beginning to come into play, the brotherly
:49:04. > :49:10.tactics are beginning to come into play, with Jonathan Brownlee
:49:10. > :49:13.covering every single move. So if somebody was stronger after the
:49:13. > :49:17.getting away, he will be taken up as well, but not giving additional
:49:17. > :49:21.help to a lone breakaway. He will not be in a position where he will
:49:21. > :49:25.breach that group and take them back to the leaders. They really
:49:25. > :49:29.heavy rain has stayed away for the moment, it is drying up again now,
:49:29. > :49:36.although there is a cloud above the Serpentine. Pick looks rather
:49:36. > :49:42.threatening. That is the gap between the leading three. You
:49:42. > :49:46.could see from the helicopter, it was quite clear. That looks like
:49:46. > :49:53.Jonathan Brownlee again at the front of the field. William Clarke
:49:53. > :49:59.is five or six behind him. Tim Don is not far behind. All sorts of
:49:59. > :50:05.very this and runners, with good chances going into the final
:50:05. > :50:10.section. There is a man between the leading three and the chasing group.
:50:10. > :50:15.Somebody is trying to bridge that gap. Do you think that is Gomes
:50:15. > :50:19.coming through? It looks like the Spanish colours. They are all going,
:50:19. > :50:26.come on, let's get up there, and Jonathan Brownlee says he is more
:50:26. > :50:29.than happy to chase behind but I'm not going to do the work. So the
:50:29. > :50:33.big chase group, one in the medal has made a big effort by himself,
:50:33. > :50:38.but we still have those three leaders out there, including
:50:38. > :50:44.Alistair Brownlee of Great Britain. You are right about the Spanish
:50:44. > :50:54.colours, but it is not Gomes. It is rather, another former world
:50:54. > :50:58.
:50:58. > :51:03.champion, with another excellent pedigree -- Rana. And with just
:51:03. > :51:12.under five laps to go, it is Alistair Brownlee first, with
:51:12. > :51:20.Brukhankov. Others are making an effort to close the gap as well. 16
:51:20. > :51:24.seconds between them. 17 seconds officially, between the front for
:51:24. > :51:29.back row and the chasing pack. Coming through transition again.
:51:30. > :51:34.Bash the front four. It is not significant enough. We had
:51:34. > :51:38.anticipated around 17 seconds would have stretched on the third lap,
:51:38. > :51:42.but it hasn't happened. Maybe coming towards a critical part of
:51:42. > :51:48.the race, if we have that commitment absolutely going down by
:51:48. > :51:50.the leaders, or do we have a different sort of commitment, where
:51:50. > :51:54.the chasing pack finally get themselves together. They are going
:51:54. > :51:59.to have to ignore Jonathan Brownlee, who is more than happy to sit in
:51:59. > :52:02.there. The other Brits have to make a decision. Again, that huge spread
:52:02. > :52:08.on the road with the weak and it looks as though nobody is going to
:52:08. > :52:11.commit. -- with the width. You can understand the mind said, if you
:52:11. > :52:16.are looking for Olympic qualification, you will rest your
:52:16. > :52:21.legs and try and pick-up selection in the run. So many mind games
:52:21. > :52:25.going on. Always different things happening a, and that really is the
:52:25. > :52:31.absolute beauty of triathlon. Alistair Brownlee just checking on
:52:31. > :52:36.the time to see what sort of lead they have got on the chasers.
:52:36. > :52:44.L very, Brukhankov, Alistair Brownlee, now joined by the
:52:44. > :52:49.Spaniard at the back of the group of four. Brukhankov get an energy
:52:49. > :52:53.bar of some kind down him. Trying to maintain his base. Then there is
:52:53. > :53:00.the Spaniard, the form here world champion, he won in Cancun 10 years
:53:00. > :53:05.ago -- former. He has been so good, almost the same age as Tim Don.
:53:05. > :53:10.What a brave effort to come through. Another thing we need to talk about,
:53:10. > :53:13.another fact that, that is because the lead four are going so fast,
:53:14. > :53:18.even with the big group chasing through, they will be working hard
:53:18. > :53:23.as well. So it is great tactics by the front for and if anybody thinks
:53:23. > :53:27.they are going to be resting their legs in the chase back a, they need
:53:27. > :53:32.to think -- make sure they don't get to the front, because they are
:53:32. > :53:36.going to be called on to do some work. It looks to be closing, but
:53:36. > :53:45.the camera shortens it for us. have another breakaway group of
:53:45. > :53:55.three. Stuart Hayes is in there. I am pretty sure he is the third.
:53:55. > :54:00.Stuart Hayes is at the back of that group. He has covered up his arms
:54:00. > :54:06.so I can't get a look at his number. Is that Stuart Hayes? Or is that
:54:06. > :54:09.William Clarke? I am going to call that as Stuart Hayes. He has been
:54:09. > :54:15.brave in the past on loan breaks. But they haven't managed to get
:54:15. > :54:21.away. We want to find out what the gap is between the leaders and that
:54:21. > :54:25.this chase back. Those three that attempted it were quickly reeled in.
:54:25. > :54:32.They four that did succeed in getting away now have a significant
:54:32. > :54:37.lead -- the four. That has totally spread. 17 seconds on the last time
:54:37. > :54:42.check, I would say it is way over 20 seconds there. Maybe 25 seconds.
:54:42. > :54:48.It is such a fast pace, it hasn't slowed down at all. And credit is
:54:48. > :54:52.due to the athletes up there making it so hard for everybody else.
:54:52. > :54:58.Everybody taking care on the damp surface now, the rain is back again.
:54:58. > :55:03.It is the third burst of rain that we have had. No need for sunglasses
:55:03. > :55:07.at the moment. I umbrellas going up. I wonder how much longer the
:55:07. > :55:11.helicopter can fly before we get a real burst of rain from the cloud
:55:11. > :55:19.that is threatening at the moment. The helicopter might have to take
:55:19. > :55:29.cover. Back at the front of the field. Alistair Brownlee ahead of
:55:29. > :55:35.Brukhankov. They don't spend long in front. They are back in the park
:55:35. > :55:40.there. Just 10 or 15 seconds before they move out and let somebody else
:55:40. > :55:45.set the pace. The distance out between the leaders and the chase
:55:45. > :55:53.pack is 30 seconds. 30 seconds between the leading four and the
:55:53. > :56:03.chasers. It doesn't look like it is shrinking at all at the moment. Out
:56:03. > :56:10.
:56:10. > :56:14.in the wet, difficult conditions on in the park, but not by the Palace.
:56:14. > :56:19.So it is very localised, the weather. It is dry here, but it is
:56:19. > :56:25.certainly reigning in the park at the moment. I am sure that will
:56:25. > :56:29.change -- raining. It is a huge gap, that opening from 17 seconds to 30
:56:29. > :56:33.seconds. We are looking at those four athletes at the top, not very
:56:33. > :56:37.pleasant conditions with the water being flicked up from the wheels in
:56:37. > :56:41.front, but a lot more pleasant than it he was sitting in the middle or
:56:41. > :56:47.at the back of a chase back. Then you will have the cold water coming
:56:47. > :56:52.all of the or racing costume, going into your eyes. -- all over your
:56:52. > :56:57.race in costume. So those weather conditions up front, that is maybe
:56:57. > :57:03.contributing to opening up the gap from 17 up to 30. Gavin noble is
:57:03. > :57:07.off the bike. Represented Ireland in the Commonwealth Games -- Noble.
:57:07. > :57:12.We may have had a bit of a crash there, because some athletes are
:57:12. > :57:17.down as well. We will try and get another look at that. Two men down.
:57:17. > :57:23.We will assume there was a coming together. We can see the aftermath
:57:23. > :57:33.of it from the helicopter. The Irish rider's race is done, I think.
:57:33. > :57:38.
:57:38. > :57:43.Irishman. I think he will attempt to get back on his bike and close
:57:43. > :57:48.the gap but the damage may be irreparable. That is tough on Gavin,
:57:48. > :57:55.he is a very strong athlete, he has done a lot of work to establish
:57:55. > :57:59.himself as a real player. If we go back to the action at the front,
:57:59. > :58:03.they are still working so hard. The bike section has been tremendous
:58:03. > :58:07.and I guess mentally, they are thinking it it is tough for us at
:58:07. > :58:12.the front, it is a lot more difficult for those at the back.
:58:12. > :58:16.And once that gap has opened, again we talk about the mindset, there
:58:16. > :58:20.will be almost unconsciously a backing of of effort. Let's wait
:58:20. > :58:25.until we get into transition and but all the work in on the bike.
:58:25. > :58:34.Bad plays into the advantage of these leaders. Bash at that. Every
:58:34. > :58:37.single turn, of 112 -- that. We see them backing off slightly, moving
:58:38. > :58:43.away from each other, they are not taking any risks whatsoever. They
:58:43. > :58:47.will not risk touching wheels and been brought down. Four are ahead,
:58:47. > :58:56.the chasers are spreading. You can hear some breaks squeaking as they
:58:56. > :59:01.make the right hand -- brakes. In transition where we are, it is dry
:59:01. > :59:06.at the moment, so the weather is moving around. Dry in places and
:59:06. > :59:11.wet in others. It is dry under those trees, certainly. It is
:59:11. > :59:19.Alistair Brownlee followed by Brukhankov. 24 years of age, second
:59:20. > :59:29.last month behind Alistair Brownlee. Also second in Sydney last year.
:59:30. > :59:32.
:59:32. > :59:35.course, there are other bonus prize funds before finishing each lap...
:59:35. > :59:39.Some athletes will think if they are not going to be in contention
:59:39. > :59:43.on the run, they will put some effort in on the bike and and some
:59:43. > :59:49.money anyway. Here they come again through a transition, the leading
:59:50. > :59:54.quartet of riders. Let's get a check on the distance between the
:59:54. > :00:04.four at the front and the chasers, with three laps to go. It is
:00:04. > :00:08.
:00:08. > :00:18.transition area with a massive peloton of riders approaching. A
:00:18. > :00:20.
:00:20. > :00:30.huge group. 26 seconds, and that is officially the gap. We will have
:00:30. > :00:47.
:00:47. > :00:51.another word with Sonali Shar and SONALI SHAH: there's the very big
:00:51. > :00:58.chase group. What tactics are you seeing, Richard was back the French
:00:58. > :01:02.pack working very well. And with the surface changing all the time.
:01:02. > :01:11.We have seen so much rain so far. You can see the rain. But this end
:01:11. > :01:15.it is dry. You have got a van rather taking a year out -- Ivan
:01:15. > :01:20.Rana, and hint works well in the pack. We saw Johnny Brownlee, ever
:01:20. > :01:30.the bodyguard if you like. He is like a bodyguard, loch nothing
:01:30. > :01:34.
:01:34. > :01:43.anybody through. -- not letting As the chasing group trying to work
:01:43. > :01:51.out this puzzle. Lots of talented runners in that group. We have seen
:01:51. > :01:57.a huge gap close down on the final section but they have got work to
:01:57. > :02:03.do. We will follow the front four from up above. Changing as they
:02:03. > :02:13.swap around taking their turn to lead and it is Ivan Rana who has
:02:13. > :02:17.
:02:17. > :02:22.Sonali said, took a sabbatical from by a while ago. Elvery comes so,
:02:22. > :02:28.Rana drops back down between Brownlee and Brukhankov. We are
:02:28. > :02:31.looking at the athletes in the chase back, you have to ask how can
:02:31. > :02:36.you are rung Alistair Brownlee when he has proved on the World Cup
:02:36. > :02:40.series how strong he is. It has been Alistair and Jonathan and also
:02:40. > :02:44.to a large extent Gomez going through as well. I am surprised
:02:44. > :02:49.that Javier Gomez is in the back and has not made any attempt to go
:02:49. > :02:55.through. We are not hearing anything it of injury coming
:02:55. > :02:58.through from the Spanish camp but we are looking around, we are way
:02:58. > :03:06.into the second half of the bike section and if we do not make an
:03:06. > :03:12.impact now,... Just as we say that, somebody is making an effort for it
:03:12. > :03:18.and will we have anybody brave enough to put down a substantial
:03:18. > :03:22.lead. It closed down to 25 seconds but it has spread out again.
:03:22. > :03:29.leading four on their way back down towards the palace again. Under the
:03:29. > :03:36.Wellington Arch. The roads closed off and the traffic has been
:03:36. > :03:40.terrible but all for a good cause. Here's the chasing group, a half-
:03:40. > :03:46.hearted effort a moment or two ago to break away but that has been
:03:46. > :03:50.stand down now. I know we are not getting full time cheques coming
:03:50. > :03:54.through but having a look at the helicopter view of that, it has
:03:54. > :04:00.stretched out to a lot more than 30 seconds judging on the previous lap
:04:00. > :04:04.going through. We have got a lone rider, is that Gomez? No, it is one
:04:04. > :04:09.of the Russians... We will check on who that is. Somebody trying to
:04:09. > :04:13.bridge the gap to make the four a five? Looks like some elite is,
:04:13. > :04:20.somebody having a go working their way towards the front of the field
:04:20. > :04:30.to join the front four and I can tell you that it is a Swiss
:04:30. > :04:35.athlete... No, it is another Russian. Number 29 who is going it
:04:35. > :04:39.alone. Making it down Constitution Hill in an attempt to close the gap
:04:39. > :04:44.but he is having a really good gapped. I is a brave man. Going by
:04:44. > :04:47.himself and I am sure he has made that decision by himself and nobody
:04:47. > :04:51.has done with him. You can understand why Jonathan Brownlee
:04:51. > :04:55.has decided not to but why is nobody in that chase pack thinking
:04:55. > :04:58.I have got to do this and put myself in contention? The four at
:04:58. > :05:02.the front, the further they get away, the more difficult it will be
:05:02. > :05:06.to close down. We have got a totally different race situation as
:05:06. > :05:10.we saw with the women, the big slowdown in different pack that
:05:10. > :05:15.enabled everybody to get back and enabled young Emma Jackson from
:05:15. > :05:19.Australia to get back in contention but we are getting towards the end
:05:19. > :05:24.of that, it will not happen here today. Were have got a retirement
:05:24. > :05:28.here, the Austrian athlete has clearly come a cropper out on the
:05:28. > :05:33.road and I am not sure if it was what that did for him. The problem
:05:33. > :05:36.with his right arm is apparent and he is free wheeling slowly in it to
:05:36. > :05:43.get some medical attention at the transition, that is the end of his
:05:43. > :05:49.race here. 13.8 kilometres of the bike to go. We have got a leading
:05:49. > :05:55.group of four, we have got a Russian athlete trying to close the
:05:55. > :06:00.gap and 30 plus athletes still fairly tightly bunched together
:06:00. > :06:07.coming round the Victoria Memorial now. The Russian has just about
:06:07. > :06:10.half the gap so about halfway to his target area. Great effort. You
:06:10. > :06:16.have got to feel for the Swiss athlete, whenever anything goes
:06:16. > :06:20.wrong on the bike, it is the collarbone or the rest. It looks
:06:20. > :06:25.like he is suffering from a broken wrist. A tough call. But you have
:06:25. > :06:31.to deal with those conditions. It is the summer now, one year on and
:06:31. > :06:36.it will be the Olympic Games, it will be similar then. Similar
:06:36. > :06:42.weather conditions. These men have made his commitment and I keep
:06:42. > :06:46.saying, you have to admire them, it is so easy to say they will stay in
:06:46. > :06:52.the pack and go on for the running legs but these guys have gone for
:06:52. > :06:57.it. Not too long before we get into the final lap on the back. Alistair
:06:57. > :07:02.Brownlee leaves the way, Alexander Brukhankov his second, James Elvery
:07:02. > :07:07.is third, then Ivan Rana, former world champion his 4th at the
:07:07. > :07:11.moment. These four working well together and they have established
:07:11. > :07:20.a very handy lead. Certainly favours Alistair Brownlee. We know
:07:20. > :07:25.how good he is, Ivan Rana is a good run as well but will he focus just
:07:25. > :07:29.on cycling, will it affect his running capabilities? It looks good
:07:29. > :07:37.for a Brownlee gold to make it a double for the British team
:07:37. > :07:41.following Helen Jenkins' victory yesterday. A lot of work already
:07:41. > :07:45.done, and no easing up off the pace at the front whatsoever. Beginning
:07:45. > :07:49.to see the chase group stretching out now, maybe something is
:07:49. > :07:59.happening there. We cannot give this away entirely but with five
:07:59. > :08:01.
:08:01. > :08:06.people off the front, Olympic selection at there for grabs. The
:08:06. > :08:13.if other athletes are relying on the positions, it is difficult with
:08:13. > :08:17.the four athletes plus the other one getting away. James Elvery has
:08:17. > :08:23.done so much work on this. And a brave performance by Ivan Rana to
:08:24. > :08:28.back that up. As you say, Matt, Rana a bit of time away from the
:08:28. > :08:38.sport. Fresh coming back in, but he has lost the run fitness.
:08:38. > :08:48.
:08:48. > :08:56.around 12 seconds. The Russians should be the next man through, his
:08:56. > :09:05.time difference is around the mid- twenties. He is on a 24 seconds, he
:09:05. > :09:12.has done well but can he close the gap further in this next lap? Two
:09:12. > :09:19.laps to go. James Elvery, Brukhankov, Brownlee and Rana and
:09:19. > :09:23.then the Russian. And then the rest of them, a 43 second gap. It is
:09:23. > :09:29.going all the time. Surely now there will be an effort from this
:09:29. > :09:39.huge group of riders to make inroads into the lead of the fund
:09:39. > :09:40.
:09:40. > :09:44.for? -- the front four? Otherwise it will be too far and Brownlee
:09:44. > :09:47.will be gifted a victory. Others in the pack will be thinking that
:09:47. > :09:54.maybe Alistair Brownlee is out of sight but we are not too sure about
:09:54. > :09:58.Ivan Rana, but do I fancy my chances against the big Russian man,
:09:58. > :10:01.Brukhankov and McIlroy as well? Still podium places up for grabs
:10:02. > :10:06.and you have got to think that maybe Jonathan Brownlee is thinking
:10:06. > :10:12.he is a strong runner, he has proved that already. Maybe he can
:10:12. > :10:19.push his way back on to this. Still no letting up of pace at the front.
:10:19. > :10:24.Still trying to going out from the 15 seconds initially to three times
:10:25. > :10:29.that now. The hesitation was beginning to appear in the traced
:10:29. > :10:35.back, not wanting to close that down. By a brave effort by Rana to
:10:35. > :10:43.come up and now the Russian try to bridge the gap on his own as well.
:10:43. > :10:53.Elvery leading Rana. And brother Jonathan Brownlee is in the group
:10:53. > :10:55.
:10:55. > :10:59.the helicopter above with the motorcycle camera alongside and
:10:59. > :11:03.this is the way it has been for the majority of the race since the
:11:03. > :11:07.three and then finally four went away. We have got three-quarters of
:11:07. > :11:12.a minute lead over the chasing group, they have worked effectively
:11:12. > :11:18.together. Sharing the workload evenly and fairly. Nobody has done
:11:18. > :11:24.more than anyone else, the Russian is hoping to join them but he has
:11:25. > :11:29.the disadvantage of working alone. And that will not help him. He has
:11:29. > :11:32.got no one to share the workload with. A with the four at the front,
:11:32. > :11:40.there is an element of trust, and they will not allow anyone to sit
:11:40. > :11:46.in there. So making that commitment is there an importantly, it is the
:11:46. > :11:49.time element. They have got to stay with this, however hard it is. And
:11:49. > :11:54.however much it may take it out of your legs going into the run, you
:11:54. > :11:58.have still got that as well. 43 seconds at the moment but perhaps a
:11:58. > :12:04.bit more going in and to try to close a one-minute gap on the run,
:12:04. > :12:11.there are some people who are capable of doing it that such
:12:11. > :12:16.strong runners as Rana at his best and also Brownlee as well, that
:12:16. > :12:21.will be tough to do. For they are heading now once again under a
:12:21. > :12:29.constitution Arch or Wellington Arch. The chases behind, plenty of
:12:30. > :12:36.them have done a pretty much nothing. The Portuguese up for it
:12:36. > :12:39.at the back, he is a good runner. Minimal work-rate were acquired at
:12:39. > :12:43.the back of the pack and hoping that the pace is solid enough at
:12:43. > :12:48.the front when they come to transition of the second time, they
:12:48. > :12:51.can move forward and make a run. It is a bit of a gamble. I know we
:12:51. > :12:57.don't get a true impression when comparing the small group of four
:12:57. > :13:00.and a huge group going through, but it looks like there is not impetus
:13:00. > :13:04.in the big group. People able to sit up and freewheel for a bit and

:14:22. > :14:25.leading riders knowing that their a good position going for a run.
:14:25. > :14:31.For there's the man who had tried to make the break to join the

:44:28. > :44:33.Laurent Vidal and uses, and then Jan Frodeno, the Olympic champion.
:44:33. > :44:37.Will Clarke coming round the hairpin now. Maik Petzold for

:45:04. > :45:07.chance here and now we are seeing Jonathan Brownlee getting away from
:45:07. > :45:12.Javier Gomez. The first time we have seen a significant gap coming
