0:00:14 > 0:00:43MUSIC PLAYS Good morning and thanks for joining

0:00:43 > 0:00:48us at this ridiculous hour. It is England against Papua New Guinea in

0:00:48 > 0:00:53the quarterfinals of the 2017 World Cup. And joining us for this one are

0:00:53 > 0:01:02- oh. What do you mean? They're still in bed? OK, bear with us.

0:01:02 > 0:01:06Getting ready for bed at a regular time is one of the most important

0:01:06 > 0:01:13habits you can learn.Goodnight, David.Goodnight, sis.In sleep the

0:01:13 > 0:01:18muscles of the body are relaxed. It's the most perfect way to relax

0:01:18 > 0:01:33that we have. Dreams are normal, too.It's... PNG going for another

0:01:33 > 0:01:37three. Papua New Guinea, 15. England's interest in Moore

0:01:37 > 0:01:47continues. Both David and Martin have learned good sleeping habits

0:01:47 > 0:01:53help you get the most out of every day living.

0:01:57 > 0:02:02There's nothing like a great comedic acting at half four in the morning,

0:02:02 > 0:02:05and that was nothing like great comedic acting. Don't shake your

0:02:05 > 0:02:12head at me. Here are the three - former England captain Kevin, former

0:02:12 > 0:02:16Great Britains internationals Jonathan and David. As you can see,

0:02:16 > 0:02:21only two of them have done their hair. So, it is half past three in

0:02:21 > 0:02:25the afternoon, at the moment, and England are gonna take on Papua New

0:02:25 > 0:02:32Guinea for the right to play Tonga in the 2017 rugby league World Cup

0:02:32 > 0:02:36semifinal. Despite winning twice in the group stages Wayne Bennett will

0:02:36 > 0:02:40be looking for a significant improvement from his England side

0:02:40 > 0:02:45today. And despite the world rankings, Papua New Guinea will be

0:02:45 > 0:02:48no push overs. They've been impressive so far, haven't they,

0:02:48 > 0:02:52Papua New Guinea. They won't be pushovers for England today.No,

0:02:52 > 0:02:56it's a dangerous game. I think they've been outstanding, getting

0:02:56 > 0:03:00out of the group. It will be different for them today being in

0:03:00 > 0:03:04Melbourne rather than Port Moresby, but I think they will cause England

0:03:04 > 0:03:08some problems today. Hopefully England will turn up, I think we

0:03:08 > 0:03:14have been building nicely. And I think we're ready to explode into

0:03:14 > 0:03:18this competition now. Seem to have spent a lot of time

0:03:18 > 0:03:21during the tournament talking about performance rather than result. Now

0:03:21 > 0:03:26only the result matters.Yeah. I think looking back at their pool and

0:03:26 > 0:03:31the way they played they'll have to recreate the cauldron. It will be

0:03:31 > 0:03:35totally different playing in Melbourne away from the home crowd

0:03:35 > 0:03:40because they were absolutely crazy. They created an -- a magnificent

0:03:40 > 0:03:44atmosphere. I have a feeling that the England, in the knockout round,

0:03:44 > 0:03:50New Zealand, and I think England will really turn up. I'm quietly

0:03:50 > 0:03:54confident they'll win comfortable. And all -- I'll show you the results

0:03:54 > 0:03:58in many in a moment, but in many ways what's happened in the other

0:03:58 > 0:04:03quarterfinals will - is quite useful for England isn't it?Yeah, a

0:04:03 > 0:04:07motivational tool or just as an awareness. Yeah, big results can

0:04:07 > 0:04:10happen that the stage, and the perceived weaker nations, the

0:04:10 > 0:04:15Pacific Islands, you know, they're really strong, and causing the

0:04:15 > 0:04:18bigger sides some problems. For Papua New Guinea today, one thing I

0:04:18 > 0:04:23expect from them is chaos. They thrive on chaos, on the being being

0:04:23 > 0:04:27in play, off loads, playing quickly and the key to the game for England

0:04:27 > 0:04:34is controlling it and making it more structured.John who said to me off

0:04:34 > 0:04:38air is keen to get questions from people who are up at this time of

0:04:38 > 0:04:45the morning and what they'll ask. Hashtag BBCRL. Might get a couple

0:04:45 > 0:04:50away Toll him before kick-off at five o'clock. Let's show you the

0:04:50 > 0:04:54quarterfinal results so far. No doubt Fiji's narrow win over New

0:04:54 > 0:04:59Zealand was the shock of the tournament so far and the Kiwis have

0:04:59 > 0:05:04exited before the smiles for the first time since since it beige a

0:05:04 > 0:05:10knockout turnment in 1995. Australia cruised through Samoa but Tonga

0:05:10 > 0:05:15squeezed last Lebanon 24-22. That was yesterday. The teams arrived not

0:05:15 > 0:05:21long ago. Wayne Bennett decided to stick with the half-back combination

0:05:21 > 0:05:26of Brown and another. That he used before. Gareth Widdop agains plays

0:05:26 > 0:05:32full-back. Big Sam is back after missing two games through injury.

0:05:32 > 0:05:37Josh Hodgson is recalled to hooker, Ben Currie to the bench and the

0:05:37 > 0:05:40Papua New Guinea side includes familiar faces from super league and

0:05:40 > 0:05:45they have the standout full-back as well in Brisbane's Mead. We can show

0:05:45 > 0:05:49you the team. Are you happy he stuck with Gale and Brown as the

0:05:49 > 0:05:55half-backs, Kevin?Yeah, I think so. We all discussed it last week, and I

0:05:55 > 0:05:59think it gives us the continuity. Just how we played first half in

0:05:59 > 0:06:02particular against France last week, we just seemed to create

0:06:02 > 0:06:06opportunities for Widdop and I think Brown brings a calming influence and

0:06:06 > 0:06:11I think we started to see the best out of Luke Gale as well. So, I

0:06:11 > 0:06:15think it's the right move today.I think it looked a better balanced

0:06:15 > 0:06:20side. We have the creative in midfield, Lachlan as well. You need

0:06:20 > 0:06:22that. We mentioned it.

0:06:22 > 0:06:22midfield, Lachlan as well. You need that. We mentioned it. We needed

0:06:22 > 0:06:31that kind of finishing power and as the competition to -- progresses to

0:06:31 > 0:06:36release the wingers as well. To give you two credit, you picked

0:06:36 > 0:06:39your team for the quarterfinals after the win over France and you

0:06:39 > 0:06:43both had Widdop staying at full-back although not not necessariably

0:06:43 > 0:06:48thought Wayne Bennett would go that. That's what you had.I think in this

0:06:48 > 0:06:51game Brown and Gale combined beautifully and created some space

0:06:51 > 0:06:55for Gareth Widdop. And for me Gareth Widdop's biggest strength is his

0:06:55 > 0:06:59running game, and England used Kevin Brown and Gale to get Widdop the

0:06:59 > 0:07:03ball in space. England have loads of tools in their attacking sort of

0:07:03 > 0:07:10tool box. In the middle of the fool and -- field -- field and in the

0:07:10 > 0:07:15hall backs who are able to play square. And I thought Widdop is

0:07:15 > 0:07:19probably the best placed to take advantage Hoff that space. He also

0:07:19 > 0:07:23has the ability to use his skill as half-back in that position which is

0:07:23 > 0:07:28a great asset to have. By you two saying Gale and Brown

0:07:28 > 0:07:31created space for him, are you saying he didn't do enough when he

0:07:31 > 0:07:34was at half-back himself?I think it's a different challenge. I think

0:07:34 > 0:07:39Gale and Brown are more comfortable on the ball. When I say that they

0:07:39 > 0:07:43want the ball in the hands to create space for other people. I think

0:07:43 > 0:07:49Widdop is a better player in space. So I think there's enough tools in

0:07:49 > 0:07:53Lachlan, Graham, Gale and Brown to get Widdop the ball 234 space. And

0:07:53 > 0:07:58look at Zach, he was named on full-back, and the way he attacks

0:07:58 > 0:08:03out wide is what England need. Also he has a kicking game at full-back.

0:08:03 > 0:08:07He's the vision of the side. If they need a kick early when under

0:08:07 > 0:08:12pressure from the forward. He had to be more vocal, clear and kick early.

0:08:12 > 0:08:18As I said, it looks a better balanced side, and that, I think, is

0:08:18 > 0:08:21a great threat which you need in the latter stages.

0:08:21 > 0:08:28I think what's interesting is we're debating this now, but we probably

0:08:28 > 0:08:31need to realise Lomax isn't 100% fit that. Would have come into the

0:08:31 > 0:08:35equation. You think that has in some ways forced Wayne Bennett's hand?I

0:08:35 > 0:08:39think we agree it's the way to go today but the fact somebody isn't

0:08:39 > 0:08:44quite 1 Melbourne Cup % fit, it makes the decision for you. You want

0:08:44 > 0:08:47everybody out there firing fit.I would have still gone with Widdop?

0:08:47 > 0:08:50Yeah. He's the form player so you put him

0:08:50 > 0:08:55in.Jonny Lomax can do a lot of the things Widdop do but Widdop got the

0:08:55 > 0:08:59opportunity.You talked to him last week so don't try and make it up.I

0:08:59 > 0:09:01got to inside track about the injury.

0:09:01 > 0:09:05Oh, yeah. But for England... If you're in possession of the shirt

0:09:05 > 0:09:08and you're in form, then it's gonna be difficult to dislodge that

0:09:08 > 0:09:13person.That's the risk if you let somebody into the team and they play

0:09:13 > 0:09:18well, they more than likely keep the shirt. For England, there's

0:09:18 > 0:09:22continuity. They have people in key positions and they haven't had that

0:09:22 > 0:09:27all tournament. When you're in the knockout stages as the team progress

0:09:27 > 0:09:33through the games know, it's probably unlikely you're gonna get

0:09:33 > 0:09:37in unless somebody has misfortune and gets injured. While the team

0:09:37 > 0:09:42continues winning it's stuff. -- it's tough.Let's show you how

0:09:42 > 0:09:46England made it to the quarterfinals. Played three opening

0:09:46 > 0:09:51games, lost to Australia, but beat Lebanon and France. Wayne Bennett as

0:09:51 > 0:09:56I acknowledged the improvement -- acknowledged improvement is needed

0:09:56 > 0:10:00although one man has been sensational during the tournament

0:10:00 > 0:10:04and that's Germaine and he's been talking to our correspondent.To

0:10:04 > 0:10:10McGillvary.McGillvary comes back in on the inside.Jermaine McGillvary

0:10:10 > 0:10:17scores again. Jermaine McGillvary! Nine tries in nine successive test

0:10:17 > 0:10:23matches in an England shirt. You're causing quite a stir over

0:10:23 > 0:10:29here. The Aussie media seem to love you a lot. What is it, nine tries in

0:10:29 > 0:10:33nine internationalsYeah, somebody said that. I thought it was seven

0:10:33 > 0:10:38games but I worked it out. It's nine in nine, not a bad record. But I'd

0:10:38 > 0:10:43swap that for a World Cup any time. There was bit of a cloud in this

0:10:43 > 0:10:47World Cup when you were accused of biting by Robbie far are and that

0:10:47 > 0:10:51rattled you a bit.The things they were saying in the press I was

0:10:51 > 0:10:55basically guilty already, so it rattled me a bit. They were saying I

0:10:55 > 0:10:59was guilty, I could miss the rest of the World Cup. And I worked all my

0:10:59 > 0:11:04life where to be where I am now. I worked really hard and to see it

0:11:04 > 0:11:09could all disappear in one incident. Yeah, I was pretty rattled but I

0:11:09 > 0:11:14kept quiet. Once I had my say, it took them what, two, three minutes

0:11:14 > 0:11:18to make a decision. Yeah, we're over it. The incident has been put to we

0:11:18 > 0:11:23move on. You tend not to dwell on your try

0:11:23 > 0:11:27scoring but you dwell more on what you do at the other end of the field

0:11:27 > 0:11:33don't you?Yeah, for me anyone can can score a try, but what else can

0:11:33 > 0:11:38you offer the team? My yardage coverage of my career, I have tried

0:11:38 > 0:11:42to help the team as much as I can. You're a rugby league story, you

0:11:42 > 0:11:46were reasonably late to rugby league weren't you?-- weren't you? Yeah, I

0:11:46 > 0:11:50started off eight to 11, high school age. Then you meet a lot of new

0:11:50 > 0:11:55friends when you get into high school. I was a bit small, getting

0:11:55 > 0:12:01tired of the code and getting pashed up a -- bashed up a bit so I thought

0:12:01 > 0:12:07I'd quit. I bumped into a player cos I was doing labouring and I looked

0:12:07 > 0:12:14pretty big for my small frame and he said I could down to the hudders

0:12:14 > 0:12:18field Giants academy, give it a go. I put the hard work in, people put

0:12:18 > 0:12:22faith in me and here I am.So it's all been worthwhile?Definitely.

0:12:22 > 0:12:28Sacrifices. -- sacrifices. I have had to cut a lot of things out of my

0:12:28 > 0:12:32life.What would it mean to win a World Cup with England? It would

0:12:32 > 0:12:36mean everything. Like, there's a lot of quality world-class players who

0:12:36 > 0:12:41have tried in the past and failed. For us as a group of people, if we

0:12:41 > 0:12:45were to succeed, you know, it would be legendary for England. We need to

0:12:45 > 0:12:51put it all together and hopefully when it matters we do.

0:12:51 > 0:12:56He comes across as such a nice lad doesn't he?Yeah, he's been

0:12:56 > 0:13:00sensational hasn't he? I think no wonder the Australians are talking

0:13:00 > 0:13:03about the NRL competition. He's been doing that for a number of years

0:13:03 > 0:13:07now, and he has been the standout for England I think. Carries in the

0:13:07 > 0:13:13back field for us in particular, I have - enable your Grahams,

0:13:13 > 0:13:17Burgesses, Curries to get back on side, get back in the play. He's

0:13:17 > 0:13:22been devastating. As he alluded to in his interview there, he said he

0:13:22 > 0:13:27wants to give more to the team, and he's trying hard to do more for the

0:13:27 > 0:13:31team than just score tries. He said anyone could score a try, but you've

0:13:31 > 0:13:38got to do more.In super league what he does consistently is carry the

0:13:38 > 0:13:42ball early in sets, gets Huddersfield on the front field and

0:13:42 > 0:13:47makes 200m. As a number it doesn't mean anything but it enables other

0:13:47 > 0:13:53men not to get bar and far behind the ball. Creating fast place from

0:13:53 > 0:13:58the yardage. He's been doing it throughout the World Cup as we see

0:13:58 > 0:14:02here. Often falls on his front. Defensively he's been smart, picked

0:14:02 > 0:14:07up a nice position there put the ball out. There is -- there is what

0:14:07 > 0:14:13McGillvary is about.He's nice, as a kicker it's easier for you if you're

0:14:13 > 0:14:18kicking the ball on the halfway line. And he gives a set a really

0:14:18 > 0:14:22good start. Hall has been doing it all his career. If you look at those

0:14:22 > 0:14:26two, they're as big as maybe some of the forwards, just a little quicker.

0:14:26 > 0:14:30I think his strength of character has been unbelievable in this

0:14:30 > 0:14:37tournament. See him scoring another try here against France. I think the

0:14:37 > 0:14:43make here today is Papua New Guinea is made up two threes including

0:14:43 > 0:14:47David Mead and two wingers in Lo and another. England will have to deal

0:14:47 > 0:14:51with two wingers similar to McGillvary, who will carry the ball

0:14:51 > 0:14:55hard, almost a jack in the box, bounce around, be very strong.

0:14:55 > 0:14:59I don't want to depress Huddersfield fans this time in the morning but do

0:14:59 > 0:15:04you think they have to fight to hold on to him inIn two years he's gone

0:15:04 > 0:15:07to the NRL. I can't see anything other than Jermaine McGillvary

0:15:07 > 0:15:11playing in the NRL in two years. This the best winger for me in the

0:15:11 > 0:15:15world at the moment. I think another is fantastic. I think there's

0:15:15 > 0:15:20argument for maybe two or other wingers, Valentine put in five tries

0:15:20 > 0:15:23for Australia but Jermaine McGillvary, from personal

0:15:23 > 0:15:26experience, is probably one of the most different players to handle.

0:15:26 > 0:15:30They're -- he's the one they're talking about. Ian Mill will tell

0:15:30 > 0:15:35you in commentary last week that everybody knows he's got two years

0:15:35 > 0:15:43left. They're circling.That's what it's about, though. In my day if you

0:15:43 > 0:15:47played well against Wigan they'd bite you.Funnily enough you didn't

0:15:47 > 0:15:52sign for Wigan.I was in contract. They couldn't afford me, sorry.

0:15:52 > 0:15:58That's what you do. That isn't a bad stage - playing against the best in

0:15:58 > 0:16:02the world, you're out there, playing in their back yard. They're banging

0:16:02 > 0:16:06on how God their players and wingers are, and all of a sudden he's

0:16:06 > 0:16:10getting all the mention. It's brilliant for him and also for I

0:16:10 > 0:16:14think the English game. I thought at the start of the

0:16:14 > 0:16:17interview was interesting. Go back to the Lebanon game and after the

0:16:17 > 0:16:21wards -- afterwards we were saying it wasn't a bite, it would be fine,

0:16:21 > 0:16:25but those couple of days doubt he would have had and thinking as he

0:16:25 > 0:16:30said, "I have worked for this all my life. This is what I wanna do." That

0:16:30 > 0:16:33uncertainty for that 48 hours must have been very hard to deal with.

0:16:33 > 0:16:38Yeah, it would have been tough for him, the whole He's been that good.

0:16:38 > 0:16:41It's not like any other indiscretion, do you know what I

0:16:41 > 0:16:49mean? Catch somebody high. It's a late shot, but a bite a -- is a

0:16:49 > 0:16:54tournament, looking at a 12-week ban.Biting and gouging.

0:16:54 > 0:17:00Isn't it funny he's a winger and if he was missing heed be the biggest

0:17:00 > 0:17:05miss in the England's game. It's a reflection, if he was missing it

0:17:05 > 0:17:10would affect how England would day. -- play.Especially when they have

0:17:10 > 0:17:13two out. Now to Papua New Guinea, won all

0:17:13 > 0:17:18three of their group games, beating Wales and land and won the game

0:17:18 > 0:17:24against the USA. All of their games have been in front of their

0:17:24 > 0:17:28passionate home support in Port Moresby, a cauldron is how Jonathan

0:17:28 > 0:17:32described it. It will be different in the cooler climate of Melbourne

0:17:32 > 0:17:38and Dave has been inside their training camp. It's our national

0:17:38 > 0:17:43sport. We have tribal possibles, politics, but when it comes to the

0:17:43 > 0:17:48national team, everybody is behind, everyone supports that one thing.

0:17:48 > 0:17:53Yeah, that's how crazy it is. Segeyaro will race away to score and

0:17:53 > 0:17:57Papua New Guinea go to go in for number three. This is probably the

0:17:57 > 0:18:01most consistent we've been. As an organisation and you can just feel.

0:18:01 > 0:18:07You can see it now. So hopefully in continues and I'm excited to go into

0:18:07 > 0:18:10this game. There is the half century, Papua New

0:18:10 > 0:18:16Guinea, 50.We got -- we got players who can score tries from anywhere in

0:18:16 > 0:18:20the football field. If we stick to our game and go out there with the

0:18:20 > 0:18:26right mindset it shouldn't be a problem.Burgess rips over, and

0:18:26 > 0:18:30slamming Sam! I think he'll help them be a

0:18:30 > 0:18:34stronger side. There's no doubt Wayne's obviously a very good coach

0:18:34 > 0:18:39with a good record. He's a big boost for England as well. Hopefully we

0:18:39 > 0:18:43spoil the pear for them Sunday afternoon. We expect them to be

0:18:43 > 0:18:47really tough in Melbourne. As we know, they got experience all over

0:18:47 > 0:18:52the park there. All we want is to go out there and compete well against

0:18:52 > 0:18:58them. That's been our goal throughout the the week and the past

0:18:58 > 0:19:04few weeks. There's a lot of belief in the team currently that we have,

0:19:04 > 0:19:08this is probably one off our best squads we have put together over the

0:19:08 > 0:19:13past many years. We started building this team up from 2016. Last year,

0:19:13 > 0:19:17till this year. To get to the quarterfinals, you know, it's really

0:19:17 > 0:19:22good.What will it mean to beat England in a World Cup qualifier?

0:19:22 > 0:19:26Oh, man. Yeah, well, we'd make history again. Definitely be making

0:19:26 > 0:19:31history for our country and making our families and our country very

0:19:31 > 0:19:35proud, and, yeah, there's no reason why we can't, and I'd love to be

0:19:35 > 0:19:40part of that team. They're more than just a team who

0:19:40 > 0:19:45can turn it on in their home nation aren't they. That would be slightly

0:19:45 > 0:19:47disrespectful to them.Find out today.

0:19:47 > 0:19:54Well, yeah. Very good point.I think it's... If people haven't

0:19:54 > 0:19:58experienced Port Moresby, it is one of the places you will ever visit as

0:19:58 > 0:20:03a rugby player. Whenever you go, there's people screaming and

0:20:03 > 0:20:07shouting, we throw our boots out of the minibus just to get them away

0:20:07 > 0:20:11from the minibus. They are everywhere. In hotels they come and

0:20:11 > 0:20:17turn up. I remember David bishop threw his Jersey out on the tour,

0:20:17 > 0:20:211990, and two days later this guy turned up in the hotel wearing his

0:20:21 > 0:20:25Jersey. He must have been the hardest guy in the village, and he

0:20:25 > 0:20:30won it. It was two sizes too small for him. That's the way it is. When

0:20:30 > 0:20:34you play there, the crowd understand the game. They travel days to come

0:20:34 > 0:20:42and watch it. I think that's gonna be their toughest task. Creating

0:20:42 > 0:20:44their own atmosphere in that stadium.

0:20:44 > 0:20:51Guys, and I take all of that, but I suppose I'm also - they've got

0:20:51 > 0:20:55talent there as well. It's not just about atmosphere and the conditions.

0:20:55 > 0:21:00Today is one thing it's going to be very physical. It's gonna be really

0:21:00 > 0:21:05aggressive in the middle and I think we mentioned last week, myself and

0:21:05 > 0:21:09John played in a 2008 World Cup against Papua New Guinea and I think

0:21:09 > 0:21:12we were sore for the rest of the competition the -- competition from

0:21:12 > 0:21:17the game. They can hit and hit you as hard as they can. What I -- they

0:21:17 > 0:21:20have got, two trios, the back three, who are very dangerous and a

0:21:20 > 0:21:25combination of three hookers who are on the field at the same time -

0:21:25 > 0:21:29Segeyaro, Baptiste and another. When those three are on the field I think

0:21:29 > 0:21:33it tells England where they'll come up - up the guts, the middle. Try

0:21:33 > 0:21:37and move our big men around and try and pick off the bigger boys.David

0:21:37 > 0:21:41Mead.Yeah, he's genuine international quality. Not only

0:21:41 > 0:21:45that, I think his leadership in this tournament has been exceptional. I

0:21:45 > 0:21:49have liked what he said behind the scenes for Papua New Guinea. But a

0:21:49 > 0:21:56bit like Widdop, finds himself in space. If he wants to win the ball

0:21:56 > 0:22:00now he's genuinely quick and he can score tries. Positionally he's been

0:22:00 > 0:22:04exceptional at full-back. He's constantly sniffing out

0:22:04 > 0:22:09opportunities. Doesn't seem to be much happening here. Bit of

0:22:09 > 0:22:12footwork, through the line, try. He's genuine star quality. I think

0:22:12 > 0:22:16in their team you look at it and there's maybe three or four guys who

0:22:16 > 0:22:20they need to have the best games for Papua New Guinea. David Mead is one

0:22:20 > 0:22:25of them. Segeyaro, the hooker who Kevin pointed out is crucial. That's

0:22:25 > 0:22:29where you think Papua New Guinea can hurt England, out of dummy half.

0:22:29 > 0:22:34Yeah, because they're dangerous. In this sort of instinctive running

0:22:34 > 0:22:37style. Chaotic environments like this where you have athletic people

0:22:37 > 0:22:41in open spaces. If England are playing in a game and it looks like

0:22:41 > 0:22:46this, it will be more difficult than if it's structured. Little off

0:22:46 > 0:22:49loads, support play from Segeyaro. This is where Papua New Guinea get

0:22:49 > 0:22:54excited. Dummy half play I think will be crucial. Kevin said about

0:22:54 > 0:22:58the three dummy halves. If the game gets quick and the dummy halves get

0:22:58 > 0:23:02control of the game it will be a much more difficult day for the

0:23:02 > 0:23:06England middles.I think the biggest improvement is - you know, as I --

0:23:06 > 0:23:10as I watch -- thems that organisation. They've got players

0:23:10 > 0:23:14who can control games. The kicking game is a lot better so it is gonna

0:23:14 > 0:23:19be difficult. Looking at the Ireland game, when Ireland fronted up

0:23:19 > 0:23:23against them and ire London could have won that and should have won

0:23:23 > 0:23:27it. That's the real, you know, test for them, can they step up again,

0:23:27 > 0:23:31and England will be far more physical. They'll be bigger, far

0:23:31 > 0:23:35more organised than Ireland and better players. That's why I'm

0:23:35 > 0:23:39thinking is this now - can they step up the next level and we'll have to

0:23:39 > 0:23:45wait and see. Speaking about - do you ask some

0:23:45 > 0:23:50questions, one said, it's kind of on those lines but from an England

0:23:50 > 0:23:54perspective. Given he's in such amazing form would you have started

0:23:54 > 0:23:59James Roby?Yes. And Hodgson on the bench. Yes. I think the beauty of

0:23:59 > 0:24:05Hodgson on the bench is he covers both half spots and plays the and

0:24:05 > 0:24:0913.James Roby did something simple which we probably overlooked. He got

0:24:09 > 0:24:13the ball in the right hands of the people at the right time and

0:24:13 > 0:24:18executed it well. Hodgson is a fantastic player, huge fan, but he's

0:24:18 > 0:24:24looking to create more out of dummy half. James Roby will fire a crisp

0:24:24 > 0:24:28pass to Brown, put the ball in the right people's hands and I think

0:24:28 > 0:24:31would have benefitted England. Callum says he has done an all

0:24:31 > 0:24:37Englander - nighter so can England win. A lot are the same vein. "What

0:24:37 > 0:24:42time did you go to bed, John?" Is that relating to how I look?

0:24:42 > 0:24:47Sully follows that. "What moisturer does Kevin use? He's the only who

0:24:47 > 0:24:54doesn't look like he's been up all night."No stress.We didn't have

0:24:54 > 0:25:00make-up, we have special effects. I think the lighting's very

0:25:00 > 0:25:03favourable on Kevin's.It's that magic button.

0:25:03 > 0:25:09Right. Let's hear from Sam Burgess how he's back today after two games

0:25:09 > 0:25:16out injured. And this is what he said pre-match.Obviously you've

0:25:16 > 0:25:20said you'll be back for the game with a knee injury. Have you trained

0:25:20 > 0:25:23without any problems or nursed it through? No, it's been fine, trained

0:25:23 > 0:25:28the whole week with the team. Extremely confident with the work

0:25:28 > 0:25:32we've done over the past two weeks. Pull through fine tonight. Big

0:25:32 > 0:25:35challenge today, the Papua New Guinea boys have been extremely

0:25:35 > 0:25:40physical and dominant It will be a good game to come back in.

0:25:40 > 0:25:43Your character has shone through the sidelines when out injured. What

0:25:43 > 0:25:46have you made of England's performances against Lebanon and

0:25:46 > 0:25:52France last week?I think each good without being brilliant. I think he

0:25:52 > 0:25:55started both games particularly well, got points in front and

0:25:55 > 0:25:59probably not executed as well as we'd like in the back half of the

0:25:59 > 0:26:03games. Different conditions today. Great weather, nice and dry out

0:26:03 > 0:26:06there. Hopefully it will keep the ball a bit better and finish the

0:26:06 > 0:26:09game stronger. Not sure how many preparation has

0:26:09 > 0:26:14watched around watching videos of the Kumuls, but watch -- won three

0:26:14 > 0:26:19games at home, big support. What worries you about them?A lot of.

0:26:19 > 0:26:24They're physical, carry the ball strong. They're a passionate team.

0:26:24 > 0:26:27Seen two previous quarterfinal results passion goes a long way at

0:26:27 > 0:26:33this level. Tonga, both Fiji, two tight games. It will be a great

0:26:33 > 0:26:36battle for us. It will be a great test match.

0:26:36 > 0:26:42Great to see you back. Play well. Thanks, mate. Cheers. What have

0:26:42 > 0:26:49England missed whilst he's been out? I actual Ben Currie was outstanding

0:26:49 > 0:26:52last week but I think what you miss is his personality, character. He's

0:26:52 > 0:26:59a leader. Last week when Lachlan and game Graham came off the same time.

0:26:59 > 0:27:03We missed somebody grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck in the

0:27:03 > 0:27:07middle. He has ha lot of experience, the boys look to him. They'll be

0:27:07 > 0:27:11buoyed by the fact he's in the dressing room with him. You'll be

0:27:11 > 0:27:15nervous going into the game but you look around and are comforted that

0:27:15 > 0:27:20Sam is there.He's a player when you need a big hit, big run, he'll turn

0:27:20 > 0:27:25up and do it, and I think that hopefully - they use him today as a

0:27:25 > 0:27:29decoy. We mentioned this last week. He is a massive star in the NRL and

0:27:29 > 0:27:34all these Papua New Guinea players will be in awe of him. They all want

0:27:34 > 0:27:38to have a on him, pile in. That's where they've got to use him as a

0:27:38 > 0:27:42decoy. Sometimes, one fault he has, he tries too hard. He tries

0:27:42 > 0:27:48everything. All of a sudden he'll turn up on a last tackle and try and

0:27:48 > 0:27:54kick it. It's not his job. He has to do his job, use him as a decoy,

0:27:54 > 0:27:58hopefully they'll get some holds. Sam does the simple things really

0:27:58 > 0:28:02well. He hits hard. His contact and defence is probably up there with

0:28:02 > 0:28:06the best in the world. He's a leader, carries the ball strong. And

0:28:06 > 0:28:09heel bring leadership and direction to the England pack.

0:28:09 > 0:28:20Not long till kick-off. Let's hear from both of the coaches.Working

0:28:20 > 0:28:24with a really good group of blokes. Getting to the cutting edge now. It

0:28:24 > 0:28:28will only get better we hope. Everyone in the UK wants to see how

0:28:28 > 0:28:32Sam has been. He'll take the field. How is his preparation? He's ready

0:28:32 > 0:28:36to go?Yeah, he is. He's done really well with injury, worked really hard

0:28:36 > 0:28:39on it. Staff have been great with him. He's 100% fit.

0:28:39 > 0:28:44It's been a really good campaign for you guys so far. Are you confident

0:28:44 > 0:28:50going into today's game?Yeah, we go through weeks of playing in Papua

0:28:50 > 0:28:54New Guinea, now to Melbourne. Had a good week. Looking forward to the

0:28:54 > 0:28:58match. Did you watch the game yesterday,

0:28:58 > 0:29:01amazing result with New Zealand and Fiji. Think you can do something

0:29:01 > 0:29:06similar?Yeah, I believe we can. We have the side and do the best for

0:29:06 > 0:29:11our country.Gareth is back to full-back. He was solid last week. I

0:29:11 > 0:29:18guess there's real quality back in the team today.Brown does a good

0:29:18 > 0:29:23job as full-back. Lomax had an injury, didn't play. Gareth did

0:29:23 > 0:29:27well. Hope he can do it today. How did the boys adjust, three home

0:29:27 > 0:29:32games, and now to Melbourne. Are they ready to go today?I think we

0:29:32 > 0:29:39sort of left early on Monday. We come a bit more like weather is at

0:29:39 > 0:29:43home but, yeah. You highlighted the chaos that Papua

0:29:43 > 0:29:48New Guinea can thrive in. Is it important for England early tonne

0:29:48 > 0:29:52make sure there's none of that, be controlled.Yeah, I think the first

0:29:52 > 0:29:5520 minutes are crucial. Get a foothold in the game. I think

0:29:55 > 0:29:59there's joins in the -- points in the game for us. Papua New Guinea

0:29:59 > 0:30:03have only conceded two tries in the competition but I think Ireland gave

0:30:03 > 0:30:08us a blueprint of how to play. Keep it quick, keep the ball in play,

0:30:08 > 0:30:12keep turning around. Make them come off the goal line. Like I said, the

0:30:12 > 0:30:16I think the first 20 minutes is crucial.Defensive discipline for

0:30:16 > 0:30:19me. For England their defence has been great for the majority of the

0:30:19 > 0:30:23tournament. Focus on really controlling the speed of the

0:30:23 > 0:30:26play-the-ball. When that gets quick Papua New Guinea will be dangerous

0:30:26 > 0:30:30and they'll run out of dummy half, spoke about their dummy half

0:30:30 > 0:30:33runners. Disciplined, defensive performance will allow England to

0:30:33 > 0:30:37attack well. With the attack we want to see them execute. I think that's

0:30:37 > 0:30:41crucial.I think England can win this by 20. Yes, they're dangerous,

0:30:41 > 0:30:47playing well. But I think the quality in the England side, if they

0:30:47 > 0:30:52play as I said the first 20, good kicking game, aggressive defence.

0:30:52 > 0:30:55Play in the right areas, comfortable win for England I hope.

0:31:17 > 0:31:18today. You wouldn't miss this. Come on, England, rugby league. Good

0:31:18 > 0:31:32luck, boys. I couldn't put it better myself. The teams are out. Welcome

0:31:32 > 0:31:37to our commentators now.I'm not sure what the complaints are about

0:31:37 > 0:31:42getting up in the morning, because we had no problem this morning. The

0:31:42 > 0:31:47sun came through the windows nice and early this morning. The

0:31:47 > 0:31:52quarterfinal, the fourth of this quarterfinal weekend. We've already

0:31:52 > 0:31:56seen some humdingers of games. England are hoping this is perhaps

0:31:56 > 0:32:02not quite as close and as tense and as upsetting as one or two of the

0:32:02 > 0:32:10other matches have been so far. We will pause for a moment for the two

0:32:10 > 0:32:17national anthems.

0:34:33 > 0:34:47# God save our gracious Queen # Long live our noble Queen # God

0:34:47 > 0:34:58save the Queen # Send her victorious # Happy and glorious # Long to reign

0:34:58 > 0:35:19over us # God save the Queen.

0:35:19 > 0:35:23How English this crowd is here today. It's virtually a home match

0:35:23 > 0:35:31for England. 80% of the people inside this ground, I'd estimate,

0:35:31 > 0:35:34have travelled and they are here

0:35:34 > 0:35:35inside this ground, I'd estimate, have travelled and they are here to

0:35:35 > 0:35:35inside this ground, I'd estimate, have travelled and they are here to

0:35:35 > 0:35:39see Sam Burgess back in the side.

0:36:06 > 0:36:13Swept along on a tide of emotion have Papua New Guinea. Boas is a

0:36:13 > 0:36:19real star and his brother Watson sulongside him in the halves.

0:36:19 > 0:36:23Sell-out crowds cheering them on. The question is can they keep that

0:36:23 > 0:36:28emotion going into this game? McGillvary looking to continue a

0:36:28 > 0:36:32very impressive record in this World Cup. In his international career as

0:36:32 > 0:36:39well. This will be his 10th appearance and in his previous 9 he

0:36:39 > 0:36:45has scored 9 tries. There's confirmation that Chris Hill plays

0:36:45 > 0:36:50after that cramping issue. He looked a bit down a couple of days ago in

0:36:50 > 0:36:57training. Congesture he might not be training but he is -- conjecture he

0:36:57 > 0:37:04might not be training but he is. James Child, just to add to the

0:37:04 > 0:37:05English.

0:37:13 > 0:37:20Everybody's ready. And in the breeze the ball just falls off the tee.

0:37:20 > 0:37:24Well, it is a clash of cultures. England expecting to make World Cup

0:37:24 > 0:37:29progress. Papua New Guinea daring to dream about making World Cup history

0:37:29 > 0:37:37today.

0:37:45 > 0:37:50An estimated quarter of the population in PNG will be watching

0:37:50 > 0:37:56this game. Lots and lots of people crowded in front of televisions,

0:37:56 > 0:38:01hoping this side can make a little more history again. You'd have to

0:38:01 > 0:38:08make England favourites. Let's hear for the first time from the two men

0:38:08 > 0:38:13alongside me, Ian and Brian. There will be a little bit more than biff

0:38:13 > 0:38:18and bash from the Papua New Guineans. They've managed to get

0:38:18 > 0:38:23themselves some structure. England need to be borg and structured. A

0:38:23 > 0:38:27tip for our viewers watching is the fact I think England will try and

0:38:27 > 0:38:30exploit opportunities on the fringes. To do that they've got to

0:38:30 > 0:38:36get the the right parts of the field.Totally agree with you. I

0:38:36 > 0:38:41agree with you on the edges. When they're vulnerable it's on the

0:38:41 > 0:38:52edges. They expect Hall and McGillvary some tries.

0:39:06 > 0:39:12The referee will stop the game here. The pass, it would have been a try

0:39:12 > 0:39:20surely.A little subtle play. But the big thing here, I'll back to

0:39:20 > 0:39:30this play again. Burgess, back rower able to throw the ball. Gareth

0:39:30 > 0:39:34Widdopp will create many -- Widdop will create many threats. I've seen

0:39:34 > 0:39:39this team play a lot in the Queensland Cup. When they become

0:39:39 > 0:39:44vulnerable it's on the edge. Getting their splits from the full-back and

0:39:44 > 0:39:53this will not be helped here if David Mead is out. They picked him

0:39:53 > 0:39:57full-back to try and get their numbers in defence better. If he's

0:39:57 > 0:40:02knocked out the rule is he has to come off.The captain will come off.

0:40:02 > 0:40:09He's reluctant. The man on the touchline, Amean, is studying to be

0:40:09 > 0:40:18a doctor. He might be out there and be great because he's a doctor.

0:40:18 > 0:40:22David Mead made his international debut in 2008 in the World Cup

0:40:22 > 0:40:27against England. Not the best of starts for him here. You can see

0:40:27 > 0:40:31that reluctance but the medical staff insisting he has to come away.

0:40:31 > 0:40:36It was one heck of a clash, wasn't it?A terrific start from England's

0:40:36 > 0:40:39point of view.

0:40:45 > 0:40:50Papua New Guinea celebrating a defensive moment. It might just be

0:40:50 > 0:40:56relieving the pressure for them here. They were gone. Great play on

0:40:56 > 0:41:01the other side of the field. They've numbered up. Rallied across and

0:41:01 > 0:41:06stopped the final play from the English. They were dead and buried.

0:41:06 > 0:41:11The injury to Mead got them out of trouble. There was no need to

0:41:11 > 0:41:18off-load the ball. Really lack of composure there by Watkins.

0:41:26 > 0:41:31Quite a few of them with NRL experience. Martin is one of them.

0:41:31 > 0:41:36He's predicted to be the next big thing in the next couple of years

0:41:36 > 0:41:38with the Bulldogs.

0:41:49 > 0:41:52Safe enough with the catch.

0:42:01 > 0:42:05Hall should have passed.Look at the size difference between the two

0:42:05 > 0:42:12teams. All across the board, England by far bigger in every position than

0:42:12 > 0:42:19the Papua New Guineans.A warm-up game in the Four Nations the last

0:42:19 > 0:42:26time they played in Auckland. I think the most momentous memory of

0:42:26 > 0:42:31that was a player scoring four tries. A match that England would

0:42:31 > 0:42:39want to forget. That's not the best kick.Remember the restart from the

0:42:39 > 0:42:4620m.One thing they have lacked the Papua New Guinean tome is their

0:42:46 > 0:42:55enterprise coming out of their half. Kick early and utilise it. They

0:42:55 > 0:43:00don't pose many problems coming out of yardage.I wouldn't worry about

0:43:00 > 0:43:06kicking early. Just assure them that England are prepared to do the tough

0:43:06 > 0:43:18stuff as well.Totally agree.Played one game for insterge a couple of

0:43:18 > 0:43:29years ago. Segeyaro wouldn't mind a return to Leeds. I'm not sure Leeds

0:43:29 > 0:43:42would be as keen. What chance that was. Ottio spills it.We were

0:43:42 > 0:43:47talking before, their two biggest players, their two centres, and he

0:43:47 > 0:43:58was able to climb over the top of Gareth there. He's a former

0:43:58 > 0:44:02international volleyball player, Ottio. Maybe that gives him the

0:44:02 > 0:44:11ability to leap. That's smart. Two 6 foot 4 people on the fringes and you

0:44:11 > 0:44:20kick to them. The referee moved off the mark. Used to be a penalty back

0:44:20 > 0:44:21in the day.

0:44:29 > 0:44:41Really?The tackle was complete. Is that not a penalty? England fans are

0:44:41 > 0:44:47not happy.I wouldn't be.I wouldn't be either. Normally you'd come back

0:44:47 > 0:44:51and play the ball.The tackle can't be complete because he's still

0:44:51 > 0:44:58moving.The ball has to touch the ground. There's that jump. Gareth

0:44:58 > 0:45:03got a little pinkie in there to release the ball. Big call there by

0:45:03 > 0:45:12the referee on the English.Bumped into Smith earlier, who has for the

0:45:12 > 0:45:18last 10 years -- bumped into Russell Smith earlier, who has for the last

0:45:18 > 0:45:2310 years been in charge of the referees.

0:45:47 > 0:45:52England's defence has been pretty good in this World Cup so far but

0:45:52 > 0:45:54it's being tested here.

0:46:10 > 0:46:15Well done, Gareth Widdop. That's smart play.What skill and

0:46:15 > 0:46:24anticipation to read that.Watkins will bring it clear. It's a great

0:46:24 > 0:46:30noise in here. Great atmosphere inside this stadium. It's a very

0:46:30 > 0:46:33English accented atmosphere. Thousands of Englishmen and women

0:46:33 > 0:46:38pouring into this city. Every cafe you go in to, every bar and every

0:46:38 > 0:46:52rest -- restaurant. England will get the tap. Ten metres away from the

0:46:52 > 0:46:58PNG line.Come on, boys, got to attack here.

0:47:20 > 0:47:25You can see how close they are.

0:47:35 > 0:47:40This is have to be clinical. It's about catch and -- where England

0:47:40 > 0:47:45have to be clinical. It's about catch and pass. They can't afford to

0:47:45 > 0:47:49keep letting them off the hook. Isn't there some space on both the

0:47:49 > 0:47:53left and right? They've got numbers and there's going to be some

0:47:53 > 0:48:04opportunities. You got to nail them, but.Chants of "England, England"

0:48:04 > 0:48:10echoing around the stadium. If you're wondering about the name

0:48:10 > 0:48:15Meninga, there's relation, but their dad changed the family name to

0:48:15 > 0:48:16Meninga.

0:48:24 > 0:48:30Papua New Guinea are living up to prematch expectations here. They're

0:48:30 > 0:48:36providing a challenge.

0:48:49 > 0:48:55He had to do that. It would have been a try.Good enterprise from

0:48:55 > 0:49:03England. McGillvary breaks two or three tackles. Watkins on the

0:49:03 > 0:49:12outside. He's just got to go over the top. Just finger tips, wasn't

0:49:12 > 0:49:19it?You know you see Papua New Guinea kick early and the great race

0:49:19 > 0:49:23on Widdop but when England got the ball they were gone conditionwise.

0:49:23 > 0:49:28They were puffing out the back. They couldn't back it up with a good

0:49:28 > 0:49:34defensive set. There was space. They tried to them and out pressure but

0:49:34 > 0:49:39the defence couldn't back them up. This game has been entertaining so

0:49:39 > 0:49:44far. I know a lot of you are getting up very, very early back in England

0:49:44 > 0:49:48to watch this and Scotland and Wales and Ireland no doubt. Hopefully

0:49:48 > 0:49:54you're enjoying what you're seeing and it's been worthwhile so far.

0:49:54 > 0:50:02Penalty to England. Are you taking the two here? No, no. Play on.

0:50:02 > 0:50:07They're just making easy metres. Papua New Guinea look gassed. It's

0:50:07 > 0:50:12been quick for them. They've had a big score last they haven't had a

0:50:12 > 0:50:17tough group to -- last game. They haven't had a tough group to play

0:50:17 > 0:50:27in.Papua New Guinea beating Wales and USA. They had a tougher game

0:50:27 > 0:50:32against Ireland but got through that one.

0:50:40 > 0:50:47Papua New Guinea feet on the line but hands in the tackle after it was

0:50:47 > 0:50:58a repeat set here.-- complete a repeat set here. Hit your back

0:50:58 > 0:51:11rower, Burgess, when you get confused. The defence spooked Gale.

0:51:11 > 0:51:19It's going to be yet another try for McGillvary. Double figures for

0:51:19 > 0:51:23appearances, double figures for tries now. 10 out of 10 in both

0:51:23 > 0:51:28respects. England have the lead. Look at the skill. The ball is out

0:51:28 > 0:51:33in front. Gives them time to deliver the pass. All the technique you'd

0:51:33 > 0:51:37want to see in skilful players. The other thing is stripping numbers.

0:51:37 > 0:51:42Everyone knows their role. They're not running overs like they were

0:51:42 > 0:51:48early in the tournament. The big difference is Brown and Widdop.

0:51:48 > 0:51:53These two wingers must love playing at the back of these two guys at the

0:51:53 > 0:52:01moment.I was thrilled. Bringing Brown into the gamy thought that's a

0:52:01 > 0:52:07good decision.Sometimes a player steps up for internationals and he's

0:52:07 > 0:52:11just suited to that. But his season hasn't been great but the experience

0:52:11 > 0:52:16and the way he squares up and lets the other players do the work around

0:52:16 > 0:52:21him, has let him come to this arena. He may be burdened at Warrington

0:52:21 > 0:52:28with a lot of issues that he may have to deal with. When you have

0:52:28 > 0:52:34Burgess on the flank and Whitehead, they just have to run some good

0:52:34 > 0:52:43lines. They can mix and match so many variations. Widdop was doing a

0:52:43 > 0:52:47lot of kicking practice yesterday. It's not come off on that occasion.

0:52:47 > 0:52:52The reason I wanted to point out that passing and the way the ball

0:52:52 > 0:52:58was in front, we expect elite players to do that and you've got a

0:52:58 > 0:53:03situation where you've got numbered. You haven't have a pass going behind

0:53:03 > 0:53:09you or catching it on your test. The reward was a try. That's what we

0:53:09 > 0:53:12mean when we're talking about execution and the discipline. This

0:53:12 > 0:53:18skill. And the big games when you've got the big teams, it might be one

0:53:18 > 0:53:24opportunity is just the difference. We're looking at this stat.

0:53:24 > 0:53:28McGillvary was the fifth best metre-maker. That's going to improve

0:53:28 > 0:53:32because this is the final game of the weekend. So he can only go up

0:53:32 > 0:53:46that table. Here's Watkins. Holding down.They're struggling with

0:53:46 > 0:53:53thepede of England, Papua New Guinea. They are. Definitely.

0:54:34 > 0:54:41I've been really critical of Hodgson during this tournament. He's been

0:54:41 > 0:54:47not giving the ball to other players.I can live with that if he

0:54:47 > 0:54:51completes the play but he messed it up.

0:55:14 > 0:55:21The final play in the set. It's put high. A decision here. There might

0:55:21 > 0:55:29be a penalty. Penalty for Papua New Guinea.I think England can cure

0:55:29 > 0:55:35that easily. Get more aggressive out of dummy half. The kicker is kicking

0:55:35 > 0:55:41for free at the moment. Hodgson nearly got there. They're definitely

0:55:41 > 0:55:47targeting Gareth. They're getting through pretty easy too. The chasers

0:55:47 > 0:55:53have to be run off also.

0:56:40 > 0:56:47He's dropped on eventually by Hill. I reckon they're having a crack at

0:56:47 > 0:56:52John Bateman's side of the field.

0:56:58 > 0:57:03Eninga doing the job from an -- Meninga doing the job from an

0:57:03 > 0:57:06offside position.He will have a talk to the captain here. That's

0:57:06 > 0:57:16about five penalties in a row there. Just trying to slow the ruck down.

0:57:16 > 0:57:24He didn't miss him, did he? He brought his porridge up from this

0:57:24 > 0:57:27morning.

0:57:54 > 0:57:57He hits the line.

0:58:16 > 0:58:23It's a second try here for McGillvary. The referee is having a

0:58:23 > 0:58:31look. He's going to give it. What a pass. And a great finish by

0:58:31 > 0:58:47McGillvary.Go to the right side. This is a one on one here. Just has

0:58:47 > 0:58:51to finish it, McGillvary, which is easier said than done. That's the

0:58:51 > 0:59:02money ball. He's flicked it all out there. What he's doing is this runs

0:59:02 > 0:59:08are dragging defenders over the right-hand side of the field. The

0:59:08 > 0:59:14right-hand side to go back to on the England side. Even Widdop, I thought

0:59:14 > 0:59:20he was going to throw the ball long. Watkins got on the outside of his

0:59:20 > 0:59:25centre. Burgess is digging in here and taking defenders. And all of a

0:59:25 > 0:59:33sudden it's all numbers for them. A nice start by England.I've been

0:59:33 > 0:59:42banging on all week about what Burgess brings. Just getting a bit

0:59:42 > 0:59:44spooked, isn't he there?

1:00:00 > 1:00:05Widdop didn't rush. That's world skills. We know it from watt kins.

1:00:05 > 1:00:11He's a world-class player. He backs it up with height and the right-arm

1:00:11 > 1:00:15flick. A person made the point he loves playing to the back row. In

1:00:15 > 1:00:20the NRL he plays in the middle, 13, because it gives him the chance to

1:00:20 > 1:00:24play 80 minutes and run and get time to have a break during the game.

1:00:24 > 1:00:26That's a brave catch from Widdop from the kick-off.

1:00:26 > 1:00:31We have seen David Mead on the touch line. I'm assuming he's ruled out

1:00:31 > 1:00:34for the next of the game because it's over 15 minutes since he went

1:00:34 > 1:00:39off for the head test. Presumably, one of their inspirational players,

1:00:39 > 1:00:43Papua New Guinea, is not coming back.If he does, does he become a

1:00:43 > 1:00:46substitution? Yeah.

1:00:56 > 1:01:01Looking to do what the right side has been doing, but they ain't

1:01:01 > 1:01:05joining the dots correctly on that occasion. As much as this left-hand

1:01:05 > 1:01:09side has been niggling, they've come up with three errors on this side.

1:01:09 > 1:01:15Hodgson once, Hall and with Bateman. That's just a lack of concentration.

1:01:15 > 1:01:19Maybe he's thinking, "OK, it's man on man, I'll have to catch it and

1:01:19 > 1:01:25step back on it side." Got to catch the ball first. For an experienced

1:01:25 > 1:01:28player that's not good enough. That's the difference between

1:01:28 > 1:01:32building pressure and putting the sword to the opposition. That's

1:01:32 > 1:01:35where Wayne continually keeping harping on to England about

1:01:35 > 1:01:38concentration errors which cause ill discipline in their game.

1:01:38 > 1:01:43I well, I'm with him on that one. We're looking for a stitched up

1:01:43 > 1:01:47performance today because there's a bigger challenge hopefully to get

1:01:47 > 1:01:50through this game next -- get through this game to next week.It

1:01:50 > 1:01:54was wow and double wow yesterday wasn't it, the other two

1:01:54 > 1:01:59quarterfinals, Tonga pushed all the way by Lebanon, 24-22. And then that

1:01:59 > 1:02:05epic Fiji-New Zealand game, not a try scored but Fiji winning 4-2. All

1:02:05 > 1:02:08the hymn singing, all the celebrations that goes with both

1:02:08 > 1:02:12Fiji and Tonga means next week's semifinals will be emotional

1:02:12 > 1:02:18affairs. If England win this, they play Tonga in Auckland. It's gonna

1:02:18 > 1:02:22be amazing! Sixth tackle coming up.

1:02:26 > 1:02:34Has McGillvary got there? I don't think he did. It's a handover.Ottio

1:02:34 > 1:02:38caught it but couldn't do anything with it. Must be a little bit of a

1:02:38 > 1:02:42breeze there, because that ball's holding up isn't it?

1:02:47 > 1:02:57Seeking a path on the inside. Wind's picking up a little. It's not

1:02:57 > 1:03:01excusing Chris Hill for dropping that, though. He was rushed at the

1:03:01 > 1:03:05play of the ball. Hodgson was subsequently cramped and misfires

1:03:05 > 1:03:09with the pass to Hill, gets his timing wrong. Those little things,

1:03:09 > 1:03:14pick them up, boys. Pick those things up. That's five errors in 23

1:03:14 > 1:03:18minutes. Every coach talks about he never likes them to get to double

1:03:18 > 1:03:24figures but normally seven the most you want in a game. That's the most

1:03:24 > 1:03:29-- there'll be some work to keep it at under seven in this game.

1:03:29 > 1:03:33Sam Burgess -- Tom Burgess on the field. James Graham has come off.

1:03:33 > 1:03:37Yeah, getting a massage to our left. And Alex Walmsley is about to come

1:03:37 > 1:03:43off.Probably the difference with the teams, Papua New Guinea -- that

1:03:43 > 1:03:47Papua New Guinea have been playing there'll be no rest in and around

1:03:47 > 1:03:52the middle for their players. Here he's Amean, bigger minutes than

1:03:52 > 1:04:01he was expecting due to the injury to Mead. Inside of Minoga, of the

1:04:01 > 1:04:06PNG Hunters. Kato Ottio is making bit of a nuisance of himself.

1:04:12 > 1:04:17A penalty for too much by O'Lachlan in the tackle. Might have been a

1:04:17 > 1:04:21case of trying to play-the-ball before you were in a position to do

1:04:21 > 1:04:27so, but the penalty has been given to the Papuans way.Oh, dear! Picked

1:04:27 > 1:04:33the wrong man out there, picked the wrong mountain to run at.

1:04:33 > 1:04:37Bet you glad you picked that sentence to say, aren't you?

1:04:37 > 1:04:42Here's Segeyaro, ten metres away. Running towards this middle of the

1:04:42 > 1:04:48park. Has Luke Gale got the gas? They're chasing after him. They get

1:04:48 > 1:04:55there and Gale is thrown to the ground. A white flag came flying out

1:04:55 > 1:05:01of that flurry there for a moment. England now progressing. Brown,

1:05:01 > 1:05:05dodging and weaving. He's been absolutely smashed. Absolutely

1:05:05 > 1:05:13smashed there! Kevin Brown.Well, he's out. I don't think there's any

1:05:13 > 1:05:17need for the second one. I'd look at this again.

1:05:17 > 1:05:22Well, he's had one or two head injuries in his career hasn't he,

1:05:22 > 1:05:31Kevin Brown? We're -- we always worry. Have a look at this. Bang!

1:05:31 > 1:05:40Head, shoulder. And Kev's gone. And the drop. Is that Ase Boas, as he

1:05:40 > 1:05:45came in. As you said, no excuse. He came in with the elbow there, Ase

1:05:45 > 1:05:52Boas. But the job has already been well and truly done.Trying to work

1:05:52 > 1:05:56out whether it was a shoulder charge or trying to wrap his around around.

1:05:56 > 1:06:00Oh, that's cheap.It's a low act.

1:06:05 > 1:06:09Well, his chance of getting away with that one on the 15 because he's

1:06:09 > 1:06:13trying to get his arm wrapped around. The second one, I just don't

1:06:13 > 1:06:23know what he was thinking. The good news is Kevin Brown is on his feet.

1:06:23 > 1:06:27Brown's instincts when he got banged, he knew he was in a bad

1:06:27 > 1:06:30spot. Listen to this for a minute.I don't want players from both sides

1:06:30 > 1:06:33rushing in. Just let us control it. It's tackle two leer.

1:06:33 > 1:06:38Well, there's no penalty. He's not seen it as foul play, either the

1:06:38 > 1:06:41first tackle which presumably is first enough. But the second effort,

1:06:41 > 1:06:58not so sure.Referee: Kevin. A player has been called forward to

1:06:58 > 1:07:03play-the-ball. I hope he's OK. Because his career has been littered

1:07:03 > 1:07:06with playing on after moments like that.As you say, just

1:07:06 > 1:07:11play-the-ball, Kev. Bringing him out to complain. Got hit too hard, man.

1:07:11 > 1:07:17Stop it. So he plays and England play on.

1:07:17 > 1:07:23Here comes Walmsley. Right man, right situation. Hodgson is at dummy

1:07:23 > 1:07:29half. Hodgson measures up here.

1:07:35 > 1:07:39See, that's already. He attracted four defenders there.

1:07:39 > 1:07:48Penalty. Oh, no, he's given a knock on against Sam Burgess here. Papua

1:07:48 > 1:07:52New Guinea finding some delight in the crowd. There's quite a few of

1:07:52 > 1:08:02them. Yeah. Fair enough.Yeah, it's fair enough. As much as there was an

1:08:02 > 1:08:06arm in there, he has to keep control of that ball.

1:08:06 > 1:08:13There's Wayne Bennett. Somewhere in there. That reflection.

1:08:17 > 1:08:21Coincidentally, when the Papua New Guinea last had the great World Cup

1:08:21 > 1:08:28run back in 2000 they were coached by Wayne Bennett's brother Bob.Does

1:08:28 > 1:08:32he have a brother called Gordon? If Papua New Guinea win today then,

1:08:32 > 1:08:38yes. That's been lost. England have it back straightaway. two knock on

1:08:38 > 1:08:43-- England have it back. Two knock ones in there, but the first was

1:08:43 > 1:08:47from Papua New Guinea. England have the head and feed.I feel some of

1:08:47 > 1:08:50those errors coming from - they're trying to upload their defence.

1:08:50 > 1:08:54They're hitting hard but they can't back it up. They haven't played

1:08:54 > 1:08:58enough games where they've had to do effort on effort. It's shown on

1:08:58 > 1:09:01their body language where they've had to come up with the tough

1:09:01 > 1:09:07moments, they're a little loose at the moment, aren't they?Yeah.

1:09:07 > 1:09:11You've seen some England produce some pretty good scrum plays at the

1:09:11 > 1:09:15moment, certainly last week.Gale's feed. Kevin Brown inside for Kallum

1:09:15 > 1:09:20Watkins.

1:09:27 > 1:09:30Driving nit hard, and England pause here. Five away, two tries already.

1:09:30 > 1:09:33They'd love a third here.

1:09:37 > 1:09:41Last gasp reach for the line, doesn't quite get him to where he

1:09:41 > 1:09:46needs to be. Walmsley will fly in there. That's a big effort from

1:09:46 > 1:09:50Papua New Guinea in defence to keep that big fella away. Hodgson comes

1:09:50 > 1:09:59back again. It's a knock John, I think, reaching for the -- knock on,

1:09:59 > 1:10:04I think, reaching for the pass. It's interesting when they go the right

1:10:04 > 1:10:09side England. They give them a bit earlier ball. When they go to the

1:10:09 > 1:10:13left, Gale goes really deep and gets undecided who he should give it to.

1:10:13 > 1:10:18It was moving there, big Kevin. He wanted the ball and wanted to

1:10:18 > 1:10:22transfer it. The ball ended up in front of him, across the body. We

1:10:22 > 1:10:25don't know what the hit earlier took out of him.

1:10:25 > 1:10:29I hope he's OK.Me, too. Just wonder whether there's a duty

1:10:29 > 1:10:34of care to actually take a player off.No.

1:10:34 > 1:10:43-- off.No.No. If he's hurt, take him off.Here is a chance now for

1:10:43 > 1:10:49the Papua New Guinea people. To burn up a bit of yardage down the middle.

1:10:49 > 1:10:55It's Garry Lo, who well be seeing a lot in -- who we'll be seeing a lot

1:10:55 > 1:10:59of in super league next year.

1:11:09 > 1:11:14Stanton Albert. His brother Albert is -- his brother is in the squad

1:11:14 > 1:11:17but he's not involved today.

1:11:23 > 1:11:29Widdop has another save for England. And that's a great save. He's been

1:11:29 > 1:11:33pretty much Johnny on the spot on the kick throughs from Papua New

1:11:33 > 1:11:37Guinea. Right place at the right time. He's read that one.

1:11:45 > 1:11:49Looking at McGillvary's yardage at the moment, up to about 50 but he's

1:11:49 > 1:11:55been well beaten by Luke Gale, he's the biggest metre maker at the

1:11:55 > 1:12:04moment for 95. Here is Gale. A probing kick to -- kick to put Papua

1:12:04 > 1:12:08New Guinea on to their back foot. It's been lost again, and England

1:12:08 > 1:12:13should have it back. Couldn't quite pick it up but they'll take the

1:12:13 > 1:12:19first knock on.Walmsley takes that and it's a try.If he picked it up,

1:12:19 > 1:12:22yeah. England's head and feed.This is

1:12:22 > 1:12:27twice on play one from a scrum and kick return they've come up with an

1:12:27 > 1:12:31error. He's lost it before he got to the defender. You've got to give

1:12:31 > 1:12:37Gale a wrap. He -- rap. He's kicked the ball, he's the first one down

1:12:37 > 1:12:41there, forced the error. Now Walmsley gets a chance. Kallum

1:12:41 > 1:12:47Watkins adequacy sweating next to him.You could hear the crane of his

1:12:47 > 1:12:52backbone going. Couldn't quite get his hands down there to pick it up,

1:12:52 > 1:12:56could he? We weren't watching - went swimming

1:12:56 > 1:13:00with sharks in an aquarium, and he was one of those who took part was

1:13:00 > 1:13:06Alex Walmsley. And he had to come up early to get a fresh oxygen tank

1:13:06 > 1:13:09because he used so much oxygen.Big lungs.

1:13:09 > 1:13:16Yeah, huge lungs.I reckon the shark would be scared of him.England have

1:13:16 > 1:13:21the discipline of mind. They're making metres but they've had a

1:13:21 > 1:13:24couple of results from the kick chase. And especially after the two

1:13:24 > 1:13:28wingers have had the early rucks because they're bending them

1:13:28 > 1:13:31backwards and making three or four tackles.

1:13:31 > 1:13:35Here comes the play you're looking for, and they're out in the open.

1:13:35 > 1:13:38There's no disguising which way they're going here is there?They

1:13:38 > 1:13:41might be. There's nobody down that blind side

1:13:41 > 1:13:46at all. Every single England player not in the scrum is standing to the

1:13:46 > 1:13:49left including Brown and Sam Burgess.

1:13:58 > 1:14:02I think Alex Walmsley might have got there. The referee also thinks he

1:14:02 > 1:14:08might have got there. And he thinks he has got there but he wants

1:14:08 > 1:14:11absolute confirmation here. Alex Walmsley, is this his first

1:14:11 > 1:14:14international try? Video referee. Looking for grounding there, thanks,

1:14:14 > 1:14:17Alex.

1:14:23 > 1:14:27See the ball this, Benny. Can't see it yet. There it is. Got the ball.

1:14:27 > 1:14:30In possession.

1:14:33 > 1:14:38OK, it's got to the line. You got something from head on, mate, a

1:14:38 > 1:14:45little quicker for us. Yeah, something from the other corner

1:14:45 > 1:14:48perhaps.

1:14:58 > 1:15:07So they're our best angles, Alex? Go back to the first one, mate. We'll

1:15:07 > 1:15:15make a call on that. So you can see he's in possession here. And ball

1:15:15 > 1:15:20gets to the line. Just follow it through so we can see the ball

1:15:20 > 1:15:24again. There it is there. OK, got a decision. Go to the board.

1:15:34 > 1:15:41Confirmation. Alex Walmsley, third international appearance, first

1:15:41 > 1:15:44international try, and England lead by 12-0.Well, that's just

1:15:44 > 1:15:48relentless. That's the difference between the teams of Papua New

1:15:48 > 1:15:51Guinea have been playing in these earlier rounds and this

1:15:51 > 1:15:54quarterfinal. They will get no rest in the middle because you take

1:15:54 > 1:15:58Graham and Hill off the field and here corporals Alex Walmsley and the

1:15:58 > 1:16:04other Burgess who is a man mountain himself, and as Graham -- game as

1:16:04 > 1:16:07they are, the Papua New Guinea forwards have to aim up for the

1:16:07 > 1:16:11whole 80 minutes and it's just too much for -- pressure for them.Yeah,

1:16:11 > 1:16:15it is. I reckon you'll get Wayne at half time talk about what you were

1:16:15 > 1:16:19talking and sort of preached a little bit. Kick early. The power

1:16:19 > 1:16:23and execution and skill on the edges, them defending 20m out, won't

1:16:23 > 1:16:27be good enough for Papua New Guinea. They need to get away from the

1:16:27 > 1:16:31battle of getting out their half. Get the wingers in early, kick

1:16:31 > 1:16:34early, chase early and force errors. The blueprint was there in that set

1:16:34 > 1:16:40of six. So 14-0. We've got about 6.5 minutes

1:16:40 > 1:16:46of the first half remaining. England satisfied with outcomes so far.

1:16:58 > 1:17:06Graham back on the field. Sam Burgess might be the next man to go

1:17:06 > 1:17:14here. Here he comes. Relentless at the moment. Papua New Guinea's tanks

1:17:14 > 1:17:22being drained by England's workload. So we've had Walmsley, Graham.

1:17:22 > 1:17:26Burgess, Walmsley again. It's almost inevitable that they give a penalty

1:17:26 > 1:17:31away just to try and slow things down.Well, they're hanging on.

1:17:31 > 1:17:34Certainly Walmsley has got great ruck speed. So he's not only

1:17:34 > 1:17:38crashing into the line, he's getting up and playing the ball quickly.

1:17:38 > 1:17:40It's just a little too hard for Papua New Guinea.

1:17:40 > 1:17:49Gale sets for touch and finds it. -- searches for touch and find it. Only

1:17:49 > 1:17:54about 15m away from the line where the tap will be taken. Whitehead

1:17:54 > 1:18:00hells -- helps it on its way to Tom Burgess. Another Papua New Guinea

1:18:00 > 1:18:02player on the floor.

1:18:23 > 1:18:31They got it in the end.You get to a point in the game where

1:18:31 > 1:18:35opportunities become obvious, and so the tempt aches to go away from the

1:18:35 > 1:18:43plan and take the metres that are in front of you. Whilst it leads to a

1:18:43 > 1:18:51little disjointedness. There's Garry Lo. Prolific last year

1:18:51 > 1:18:55for Sheffield, 33 tries in 28 appearances but that was at

1:18:55 > 1:18:59championship level. Superleague next year, World Cup right now, very

1:18:59 > 1:19:06different levels all together for him. Slowly making progress here,

1:19:06 > 1:19:12Papua New Guinea. But it is slowly at the moment.

1:19:17 > 1:19:22It bounces kind for Widdop but it also put him in line for Watson

1:19:22 > 1:19:26asbestos boss to hit him with a shoulder.What I love about Widdop

1:19:26 > 1:19:29he attacks the ball. He's not thinking about what's in front of

1:19:29 > 1:19:34him. His main thought is, "I need to get the ball quick."He's been

1:19:34 > 1:19:37brave.

1:19:41 > 1:19:47England allowed to keep possession here.

1:19:55 > 1:20:03Forward pass, was it? The near-side was shouting "forward" wasn't he. I

1:20:03 > 1:20:09was going to say it was very flat. England very often flat.Scary thing

1:20:09 > 1:20:13for England is, last game completion rates. We look at the replay on that

1:20:13 > 1:20:17and it is marginally forward. He was thinking about Gareth back on the

1:20:17 > 1:20:24inside. We talk about most coaches want a minimum 75% completion rates

1:20:24 > 1:20:32but England are 57%. That's not good enough. They're not force -- forced

1:20:32 > 1:20:36errorings, they -- they're lazy errors - not concentrating on the

1:20:36 > 1:20:37ball.

1:20:53 > 1:20:58Baptiste with his fifth Papua New Guinea cap today. Offers it up to

1:20:58 > 1:21:07Rod Griffin, one of the most senior members of the PNG -- group. There's

1:21:07 > 1:21:14a real appetite for defending from Burgess and Graham. Looking for a

1:21:14 > 1:21:15way to slip through.

1:21:21 > 1:21:25Last play in the set here for Papua New Guinea. Baptiste goes down the

1:21:25 > 1:21:29blind side. There's a challenge on here for England's left-side

1:21:29 > 1:21:35defence. They're up to it and Olam is prevented from getting too close

1:21:35 > 1:21:41to where he wants to be.Having a crack at the short side. They were

1:21:41 > 1:21:48well aware of that, England. Held on to it comfortably. That's been a

1:21:48 > 1:21:53feature of the tournament, goal-line defence. A real trade match of Wayne

1:21:53 > 1:21:56Bennett - deny them. It's one thing people are talking

1:21:56 > 1:22:00about in Australia. They've only conceded two tries in the whole

1:22:00 > 1:22:03tournament so far, the Australians but England haven't conceded here

1:22:03 > 1:22:08yet. They conceded one against the French, couple -- couple against

1:22:08 > 1:22:12Lebanon, and only three against Australia and one was right at the

1:22:12 > 1:22:15end of the game, so they'll be pretty happy with things -- with the

1:22:15 > 1:22:20way things are going. Hodgson couldn't get a kick away because he

1:22:20 > 1:22:28got entangled with a team-mate. He's dropped the ball. Head and feed,

1:22:28 > 1:22:37Papua New Guinea. Just kicked the back of Luke.I can't stress it

1:22:37 > 1:22:43enough, 10 errors in the first half. A completion rate of 55%! If you had

1:22:43 > 1:22:50hair it would be pulled out by now. Here's Bosa with a kick and a chase.

1:22:50 > 1:22:55The short play on the very first play. They're after it and I think

1:22:55 > 1:23:01he might have got there. Kato Ottio celebrates what he thinks is a try.

1:23:01 > 1:23:06Referee deliberates with the touch judge.Is there a penalty involved?

1:23:06 > 1:23:15Did he push Widdop? No try. He says "no try".Looking for the

1:23:15 > 1:23:20push and grounding. Let's hear from the video referee.

1:23:20 > 1:23:23Get them onside and then we'll go through and look for a possible

1:23:23 > 1:23:35push. OK, chase is good on the outside. Follow through from there.

1:23:35 > 1:23:40Just slow it down here. Slow it down here. Yeah. Not liking the first

1:23:40 > 1:23:49angle. Show me another one, mate that, would be great. OK, nice and

1:23:49 > 1:23:55slow here. OK. Something from the back's better if you've got

1:23:55 > 1:24:05something closer. OK, so you can go shoulder to shoulder here but he

1:24:05 > 1:24:09can't push in the way he does there. That's as far as we need to go,

1:24:09 > 1:24:17mate. We've got a decision. Well, hate to disappoint the Papua

1:24:17 > 1:24:20New Guinea fans who are jumping out of their seats and celebrating,

1:24:20 > 1:24:24because they heave seen the ball touchdown in play. They're going to

1:24:24 > 1:24:30be disappointed here. They're not happy.Well, it's the right call.

1:24:30 > 1:24:33You're allowed to go shoulder to shoulder with somebody when

1:24:33 > 1:24:37competing for the ball but you metre allowed to push somebody and watch

1:24:37 > 1:24:41the hands on the replay. There's a bit of a push there on him isn't

1:24:41 > 1:24:46there? -- isn't there?Well, there's about 50 or 60 Papua New Guinea fans

1:24:46 > 1:24:51below us. Their party had started. And suddenly it had all finished

1:24:51 > 1:24:54again. SIREN SOUNDS

1:24:54 > 1:24:59Make sure you tell them the referee made the decision.

1:24:59 > 1:25:04Let Dave explain why the try wasn't good. It was the final act of the

1:25:04 > 1:25:07first half as Watkins carries the ball out of play. England with three

1:25:07 > 1:25:12tries, leading by 14-0. Jermaine McGillvary with a couple. What a

1:25:12 > 1:25:16World Cup he's having, what an international career he's having.

1:25:16 > 1:25:20Alex Walmsley with his debut international try. I think we're

1:25:20 > 1:25:25gonna be hearing from Kevin Brown as well, as they come off the field.

1:25:25 > 1:25:30Ryan is going to be grabbing hold of them -- him, I think, so we can have

1:25:30 > 1:25:35a chat with Kevin. Let's hear from Kevin Brown with Ryan down there on

1:25:35 > 1:25:49the field.Bit of a scrappy first half but you have a good lead, 14-0.

1:25:49 > 1:25:53Yeah, we gave them too much ball, turning over too many times and made

1:25:53 > 1:25:57it difficult. They're playing hard and we expected it.What will Wayne

1:25:57 > 1:26:01be happy with from the first half? Defensively we ripped in. He won't

1:26:01 > 1:26:04be happy about the errors. We have a lot to improve on.

1:26:04 > 1:26:08Good luck in the second half.Cheers -- thank you, cheers, mate.

1:26:08 > 1:26:12Pauly. Gave away way too many opportunities in the first half and

1:26:12 > 1:26:16they made youYeah, definitely, mate. Playing against a world-class

1:26:16 > 1:26:21side like England you can't to do that. We have to tidy up the second

1:26:21 > 1:26:26half to give ourselves a chance. You must take confidence out of the fact

1:26:26 > 1:26:30every time you get the ball you look dangerous.Yeah, definitely. We like

1:26:30 > 1:26:34that, but the ball security and lazy penalties, we can't afford to do it.

1:26:34 > 1:26:39Good luck in the second half. The Thanks very much. There are the

1:26:39 > 1:26:44stats from half time. England 14 -- 14-0 up. But as Kevin Brown said, I

1:26:44 > 1:26:49think Wayne Bennett will be looking at the completions, 13 out of 25,

1:26:49 > 1:26:54and the fact, Jonathan, England have made 12 errors alreadyft first half.

1:26:54 > 1:27:00Yeah, the score, 14-0, it looks good for England, but Papua New Guinea

1:27:00 > 1:27:05had some loose carries. Near their own try line, and I think too many

1:27:05 > 1:27:08errors, they weren't clinical enough. I think they'd be

1:27:08 > 1:27:12disappointed it's only 14, I think the game should be over. They should

1:27:12 > 1:27:16be at least 20-odd points in front. Is that going to be a disappointed

1:27:16 > 1:27:21dressing room at half time, because of those errors and because of the -

1:27:21 > 1:27:26they're only 14-0 up or do you look at it from Kevin Brown also saying

1:27:26 > 1:27:29the defence is very positive.Look, our defence for this whole

1:27:29 > 1:27:37competition has been outstanding. How far we go in this competition

1:27:37 > 1:27:41will be based on that, but we can't afford to making errors like we're

1:27:41 > 1:27:47doing. I don't think we're learning enough lessons week after week

1:27:47 > 1:27:50especially the ones coming out of our own England. We're inviting

1:27:50 > 1:27:53Papua New Guinea to attack us. Thankfully they've made a lot of

1:27:53 > 1:27:57errors themselves, missed a lot of tackles. We need to be better. I

1:27:57 > 1:28:02think we can come out again and stay in third gear and we'll get the job

1:28:02 > 1:28:06done and be comfortable but we want more than that. We've got Tonga next

1:28:06 > 1:28:11week.Yeah, bigger games to come for England and they can't do what

1:28:11 > 1:28:15they're doing today I don't think. One thing for me is they're not

1:28:15 > 1:28:18making errors playing and overplaying. Sometimes in rugby

1:28:18 > 1:28:22league matches the different types of errors, ones where you're

1:28:22 > 1:28:26throwing the ball around, trying to create something, pushing things,

1:28:26 > 1:28:30and there are errors that run -- that are unforced -- unforced,

1:28:30 > 1:28:34little errors around the ruck, scratchie, knock on there, and those

1:28:34 > 1:28:37kinds of errors are dangerous because nay stop you playing when

1:28:37 > 1:28:40they should. England will get an opportunity to play now. If they go

1:28:40 > 1:28:44cautious, let's not make errors there's a risk they'll go into their

1:28:44 > 1:28:50shell.I think if you look at it and you look at us, irrespective of who

1:28:50 > 1:28:53they play, they're professional, clinical and they concentrate.

1:28:53 > 1:28:58That's what Wayne Bennett will be looking at. It's those stupid little

1:28:58 > 1:29:03mistakes and lack of concentration at crucial times. Yes, they got away

1:29:03 > 1:29:06with it in this game. Against Australia you don't get away with

1:29:06 > 1:29:11it. That is the level Wayne Bennett wants them to get up to.When they

1:29:11 > 1:29:15did execute things and when they did get things right, they scored

1:29:15 > 1:29:20points. In the first half, when England got width off the

1:29:20 > 1:29:24play-the-ball to Gale or Lachlan got his hands on the ball, McGillvary

1:29:24 > 1:29:27scores try in the corner and a great line here out from Elliott

1:29:27 > 1:29:34Whitehead.Yeah, brilliant line. He comes in, holds. Ottio is if weak

1:29:34 > 1:29:38link defensively, number three. He is in no man's land. He's had a

1:29:38 > 1:29:43shocking first half. They go down the right-hand side, hold them up.

1:29:43 > 1:29:46This is brilliant from Kallum Watkins. He's ball watching, number

1:29:46 > 1:29:523.Yeah, see it on this angle. Number 3 coming up with nothing.

1:29:52 > 1:29:56Kallum Watkins falls to an outside shoulder, gets the ball in one hand

1:29:56 > 1:30:00and he can do that all day can't he? Yeah, there's two tries we have

1:30:00 > 1:30:05scored here. This is England - how England play. There's 10 England

1:30:05 > 1:30:10shirts moving there. On some occasion when three and four were

1:30:10 > 1:30:14putting ball down, it's probably worth noting it looks warm. What

1:30:14 > 1:30:18happens in these types of games, the ball gets greasy and full of sweat.

1:30:18 > 1:30:22Absolutely.I'm not trying to make an excuse for England because we

1:30:22 > 1:30:26have to be better with the ball. If the ball is greasy and full of

1:30:26 > 1:30:28sweat Kallum Watkins deserves more praise.Absolute.

1:30:28 > 1:30:34You say not to take anything away from McGillvary but he fancied his

1:30:34 > 1:30:40chances of scoring. And saw movement from Watkins, instinctive centre

1:30:40 > 1:30:43play and something we're not seeing on the other side of the field,

1:30:43 > 1:30:48Bateman, playing in centre. Watkins' movement off the ball, what he does

1:30:48 > 1:30:51without the ball in his hands defines how he's able to get the

1:30:51 > 1:30:57bass away. That's intricate centre play. I played with Matt Gidley, one

1:30:57 > 1:31:01of the best centres we have had in the game. He always moved off the

1:31:01 > 1:31:04ball. I see a lot of that in Watkins.

1:31:16 > 1:31:20Whilst our right side are making opportunities like that, we should

1:31:20 > 1:31:26be OK.Most peep of strength are going -- people of strength are

1:31:26 > 1:31:32going right to left. Because he's not a natural centre, one of these

1:31:32 > 1:31:40second row-centres, they don't have the depth. He's not taking it off

1:31:40 > 1:31:50the ball carrier. We have a guy who is fundamental to everything England

1:31:50 > 1:31:54does and that's O'Loughlin. This was important for two reasons. It set

1:31:54 > 1:32:00the tone of England in attack and it took out PNG's best player. To put

1:32:00 > 1:32:05it bluntly.Hands on the ball. Really subtle. He can carry the ball

1:32:05 > 1:32:09like a prop and go into the line and create space for people around him.

1:32:09 > 1:32:13And I think throughout the tournament, every time O'Loughlin

1:32:13 > 1:32:16touches the ball for England, especially near the opposition's

1:32:16 > 1:32:20line, opportunities are created. We saw it against Australia, France,

1:32:20 > 1:32:24Lebanon. The consistent thing is O'Loughlin's proficiency on the

1:32:24 > 1:32:28ball.He should be involved all the time in an attacking position. He's

1:32:28 > 1:32:34a big man. I don't know if he's going to carry it or pass. He picks

1:32:34 > 1:32:39the right decision most of the time. Just cutting down on the mistakes

1:32:39 > 1:32:46and the errors. That's all they need to do.He's got everything. He's a

1:32:46 > 1:32:53big man who can carry the ball. He can kick. He can hit like a lot of

1:32:53 > 1:33:01big men out there. He's been fantastic. As our captain and

1:33:01 > 1:33:14leader, a big voice in the dressing room, he's been outstanding.Another

1:33:14 > 1:33:21try after an error. Walmsley crossed the line.They probably haven't

1:33:21 > 1:33:25taken advantage of the mistakes. He grounded the ball and we had a few

1:33:25 > 1:33:33looks at this. You can eventually see that he grounds the ball. It's

1:33:33 > 1:33:36like trying to tackle scaffolding fired out of a cannon. He's awkward

1:33:36 > 1:33:47is what that means. Awkward to tackle. He's a big rangy guy.I

1:33:47 > 1:33:50think we probably need to reset where we are in this tournament.

1:33:50 > 1:33:54This might be as good as it gets in terms of performance for us. This

1:33:54 > 1:33:58might be what we dish up in the final. It won't win the final this

1:33:58 > 1:34:02for us. How we're playing at the minute we'll have enough to beat

1:34:02 > 1:34:06Tonga but to beat Australia, we're not ready for that yet.Do you think

1:34:06 > 1:34:10you're all trying to balance this, it's good, a quarterfinal. England

1:34:10 > 1:34:15are winning. But as you have done for most of this tournament, you're

1:34:15 > 1:34:23looking at the bigger picture. We talk about you need a performance.

1:34:23 > 1:34:27The most important thing but going forward this side is capable of

1:34:27 > 1:34:35doing more. I think cutting the errors out, then the performance

1:34:35 > 1:34:39will improve dramatically because they will be in more control of the

1:34:39 > 1:34:44game. They'll be in the right areas. They'll be dominant. If you look at

1:34:44 > 1:34:51the English forwards, they're going great. Everyone is doing their job.

1:34:51 > 1:34:57Burgess and Walmsley. It's easy yards for them. The control should

1:34:57 > 1:35:03be far greater from the halfbacks. It was smart kick. Papua New Guinea

1:35:03 > 1:35:11weren't creating much. Ottio has had a tough day defence and had a few

1:35:11 > 1:35:17errors. -- defensively and had a few errors. That's comtitian for the

1:35:17 > 1:35:24ball for me. Again, look, it's down to interpretation. I think that's a

1:35:24 > 1:35:29fair challenge. England's defence has been great all tournament.

1:35:29 > 1:35:34They've defended things like this very well. In the PNG dressing room

1:35:34 > 1:35:38they have to look to unlock this team.I can't understand why they

1:35:38 > 1:35:43switch off there. You're in the last minute. One of the options is to

1:35:43 > 1:35:49kick through in the last minute. Widdop is caught. Where are the back

1:35:49 > 1:35:543 communicating to cover that kick? Yes, they all stand up. You've got

1:35:54 > 1:36:00to watch, if that's an option - excuse me - they've got to cover it.

1:36:00 > 1:36:05If you had been Gareth Widdop you'd have been annoyed if that try was

1:36:05 > 1:36:10given?I'm not sure. Like John said, I think he's gut a right to

1:36:10 > 1:36:16challenge for that ball. The ball is bouncing. I don't think he's made

1:36:16 > 1:36:21too heavy contact there. Gareth has chased back. That's a big positive

1:36:21 > 1:36:33for me again today. Our defence has been outstanding. We're a chance.

1:36:33 > 1:36:41We're looking for improvement. Tonga, they'll be loose and chuck

1:36:41 > 1:36:46everything at us. The next step against Australia you can't make

1:36:46 > 1:36:50those mistakes.Speaking of putting bodies on the line, and concussion

1:36:50 > 1:36:56in sport is a huge issue, head injuries sahuge issue. Arguably

1:36:56 > 1:37:00rugby has led the way and British sport with concussion. Should Kevin

1:37:00 > 1:37:09Brown have gone off here for a head injury? We saw David Mead, Papua New

1:37:09 > 1:37:14Guinea's best play, leave the field. Kevin Brown was clearly concussed

1:37:14 > 1:37:18there and should have been removed from the field. This is a challenge.

1:37:18 > 1:37:22You need everybody to buy in to it. Sometimes it's down to

1:37:22 > 1:37:27interpretation. If you watch enough rugby you'll understand Kevin Brown

1:37:27 > 1:37:31had lost consciousness briefly there.Every player wants to stay

1:37:31 > 1:37:37on.The physio comes on. Looks after Kevin. Kevin says, "I'm all right."

1:37:37 > 1:37:44It's not his decision. The physio has to say, "Get off. Check it. If

1:37:44 > 1:37:50you're OK, that's fine."The melle that ensued after covered him up.

1:37:50 > 1:37:56There was 22 bodies on top of him. The guy who hit him as well should

1:37:56 > 1:38:01have gone off.The Women's World Cup kicks off last Thursday. Let's show

1:38:01 > 1:38:12you how that has been going. Here are all the results:

1:39:11 > 1:39:17Both teams are back out in Melbourne. England 14-0 up on Papua

1:39:17 > 1:39:22New Guinea. Let's bring in our commentary team once again, shall

1:39:22 > 1:39:24we?

1:39:30 > 1:39:35Halfway there for England in this quarterfinal - 14-0. We just had a

1:39:35 > 1:39:40joyous half-time. The entire stadium was up doing the YMCA dance which

1:39:40 > 1:39:44was terrific. There's a great atmosphere, really friendly

1:39:44 > 1:39:48atmosphere in here. As we said earlier I reckon 80% of this crowd

1:39:48 > 1:39:53are English supporters and there are thousands of them in Melbourne.

1:39:53 > 1:39:58There's a good bunch of Papua New Guinean supporters.They were

1:39:58 > 1:40:04wondering what was going on when you were doing the YMCA.Great

1:40:04 > 1:40:11atmosphere. Really friendly. I think everybody inside here is enjoying

1:40:11 > 1:40:14this, this occasion, with the exception at the moment of the Papua

1:40:14 > 1:40:18New Guinean players who are finding themselves trailing 14-0. Without

1:40:18 > 1:40:24their key man or one of their key men, David Mead. To keep their dream

1:40:24 > 1:40:28alive never having reached a World Cup semifinal, they'll have to do

1:40:28 > 1:40:32something very special in this next 40 minutes. From an English point of

1:40:32 > 1:40:36view, a lot of English fans will be hoping England do something very

1:40:36 > 1:40:41special in this next 40 minutes to set up what remains of this

1:40:41 > 1:40:46tournament.I think they'll be disappointed with themselves in the

1:40:46 > 1:40:50way they firstly controlled the ball. I think they're clearly a

1:40:50 > 1:40:56better team than Papua New Guinea. They know that. I think the Papua

1:40:56 > 1:41:01New Guineans are becoming aware of that. Coach Bennett will be

1:41:01 > 1:41:12disappointed about how much ball is spilled. He had to come a long, long

1:41:12 > 1:41:21way to claim that. One of the great names of this World Cup is Amean. Of

1:41:21 > 1:41:26all the thousands of English people in this stadium, yours is the most

1:41:26 > 1:41:30optimistic voice, the Australian voice, about how England were going

1:41:30 > 1:41:36to perform today. They'll be helped with a moment like that.They have

1:41:36 > 1:41:40the ammunition to go deep in this tournament. They have to cut out the

1:41:40 > 1:41:45errors and their poor completion rate, then they'll do really well in

1:41:45 > 1:41:48this tournament.

1:42:09 > 1:42:17He had him but he was shaken off momentarily. It's a new set here. A

1:42:17 > 1:42:27new set of 6 starts there. Sam Burgess looking for the middle.

1:42:34 > 1:42:40A real St Helens flavour to that little move.

1:42:43 > 1:42:51Held up. Off they go. Quick play the ball and was he given that?Forward

1:42:51 > 1:42:58pass.Forward pass. They caught Papua New Guinea cold there, haven't

1:42:58 > 1:43:08they? He was in.Everything is pretty simplified when Roby comes on

1:43:08 > 1:43:15the field. That is forward. Just got a bit anxious, James. When there's

1:43:15 > 1:43:19space on he picks the ball up and runs. He doesn't pick the ball up

1:43:19 > 1:43:24and look what's on. He has two decisions - early ball or best

1:43:24 > 1:43:29space. That's one of the reasons that set was so quick. Normally

1:43:29 > 1:43:32Hodgson is scanning what's happening, what should he do? James

1:43:32 > 1:43:37is black and white - either run or pass. It's a subtle thing you point

1:43:37 > 1:43:41out but it's a huge thing in the rhythm and momentum of this England

1:43:41 > 1:43:51team. It's just about being efficient with the ball. Whilst it

1:43:51 > 1:43:55looks slick and fluent and clear, do the boring stuff from your own end

1:43:55 > 1:44:01of the field, as well as being prepared to kick and chase. Coach

1:44:01 > 1:44:10Bennett would have instructed his players to do that.

1:44:18 > 1:44:26A bit of treatment for that earlier head knock there.

1:44:56 > 1:45:02Preplanned. You made the point earlier, more pressure on the

1:45:02 > 1:45:14kicker.McGillvary, a good carry again. Made another five or six

1:45:14 > 1:45:25yards. Collected by Roby. Burgess came on quick. But he's lost it. A

1:45:25 > 1:45:37simple knock-on, the referee says. We raved about Widdop last week

1:45:37 > 1:45:43about his attacking prowess and timing. He's come up with big plays.

1:45:43 > 1:45:51In his defence.That's as good as a try, isn't it?

1:46:00 > 1:46:04In the shadows of this England performance and on the field.

1:46:04 > 1:46:17Looking to emerge here. Here they come in the shape of Ottio. Matched

1:46:17 > 1:46:23and met and they're on the final play. A little clumsy. It's gone

1:46:23 > 1:46:31backwards. Wasn't sure what he was going to do. England back with it

1:46:31 > 1:46:39again.You can handle the run from Papua New Guinea and keep your line

1:46:39 > 1:46:48intact there. A bit of pressure on their attack. They've struggled to

1:46:48 > 1:47:01regroup on this defensive set. They can't get back on side.Still got a

1:47:01 > 1:47:06couple of tackles to go before before they even think about the

1:47:06 > 1:47:08kick.

1:47:21 > 1:47:32It's OK. No. It's the referee says that bobble -- it's not. The referee

1:47:32 > 1:47:38says that bobble was a knock on. You'd be doing your head in if you

1:47:38 > 1:47:43were coaching England at the moment. Where is the error? There isn't one.

1:47:43 > 1:47:47I can't see the error. He made a movement with his foot to play it

1:47:47 > 1:47:55and the bloke hasn't dropped it. What country is that referee from?

1:47:55 > 1:48:01Officially England have now made 13 errors in this game. Papua New

1:48:01 > 1:48:20Guinea just 6.Wow. What a hit by Burgess.Well, he would have

1:48:20 > 1:48:26expected and hoped for better, Hall. Rocks and diamonds from Sam Burgess

1:48:26 > 1:48:34there. Ehe smashed the error there for Papua New Guinea. Here is the

1:48:34 > 1:48:38first one. Get that into you. He drops the ball. England get the

1:48:38 > 1:48:47ball. Attacking position. Sam Burgess on the fly straightaway.

1:48:53 > 1:49:01He hasn't had many opportunities in this World Cup, Hall.

1:49:09 > 1:49:13An early start for a lot of you. Some might be late to us and might

1:49:13 > 1:49:23have missed the story of the game. McGillvary with two triesism-r. --

1:49:23 > 1:49:31two tries. Papua New Guinea have had a try ruled out by the video

1:49:31 > 1:49:39referee. Nobody 32 play the ball. England get it back.

1:49:43 > 1:49:47England's performance has been more than good enough to beat Papua New

1:49:47 > 1:49:54Guinea but I don't think Tonga and certainly Australia if they decide

1:49:54 > 1:50:03to move through to the final. An attempted break here and England are

1:50:03 > 1:50:08looking at the back of this. There might have been a hint of an

1:50:08 > 1:50:12obstruction but everyone's happy.

1:50:55 > 1:51:02The pass was meant for Amean. He wasn't expecting it. No advantage.

1:51:02 > 1:51:06England can't keep doing this to themselves. Clearly they are hoping

1:51:06 > 1:51:10to click a switch and not do the same things they've been doing.

1:51:10 > 1:51:15Sometimes when you play a team below average you make more metres and are

1:51:15 > 1:51:19trying to push the ball. But they've had to defend real well on the back

1:51:19 > 1:51:24of the breaks.Look at all that size upfront in the forwards. They have

1:51:24 > 1:51:29one of the best benches in the World Cup. All you've got tew do is keep

1:51:29 > 1:51:34it really simple, and create space on the edges. It's like everyone

1:51:34 > 1:51:38gets a bit excited and they want to be part of something. Instead of

1:51:38 > 1:51:42being part of something, building pressure should be the key. Papua

1:51:42 > 1:51:46New Guinea have been no better now. They weren't too bad in the first

1:51:46 > 1:51:53half. They're up to nine errors also.They brought their A game to

1:51:53 > 1:52:00this today, Papua New Guinea. With the quality of the England team,

1:52:00 > 1:52:06when you're looking at the build-up and the difference in quality. You

1:52:06 > 1:52:11take the emotion out of the question and...I know we can talk about the

1:52:11 > 1:52:16errors and the completion rate, but I think the scoreline doesn't do

1:52:16 > 1:52:22justice how much England have dominated with the ball. At will, if

1:52:22 > 1:52:33they wanted to go forward, they make metres.

1:52:38 > 1:52:45The leap is good. And the tackle was in the air the referee decides.I

1:52:45 > 1:52:52think he hit him.He makes contact in the air. Watch his right

1:52:52 > 1:53:01shoulder. He can't do that, can he? He's saying I don't want to tackle

1:53:01 > 1:53:05you. Well, get out of the road.

1:53:26 > 1:53:33A collision down the middle between two big men. There's been big

1:53:33 > 1:53:36collisions, hasn't there?

1:53:40 > 1:53:46Luke Page calls himself the white Kumul.

1:54:03 > 1:54:09I think he was looking for the sideline and didn't find it but had

1:54:09 > 1:54:13plenty of willing runners.

1:54:21 > 1:54:27He's hopping an extra yard or two. Now he's going backwards.

1:54:42 > 1:54:53That was not a good kick. A poor one.He should have found some

1:54:53 > 1:55:05space. Gives him a clear shot at the field. We were watching the

1:55:05 > 1:55:09Australians the other night. And Cameron Smith doesn't make mistakes

1:55:09 > 1:55:17like that. His kicking game is always exemplary.

1:55:46 > 1:55:51England back to the halfway line.

1:56:00 > 1:56:08BrillThat will be a popular -- brill That will be a popular --

1:56:08 > 1:56:14Brilliant. That will be a popular try in the camp. That's called play

1:56:14 > 1:56:23what you see. Play what you see. How easy are England getting out of

1:56:23 > 1:56:32their half? Widdop saw the space. He knew there was no full-back. How do

1:56:32 > 1:56:41you get the ball there? He has a great kicking game. He placed third

1:56:41 > 1:56:47in the Dally M this year. He's great at making space. I love the way they

1:56:47 > 1:56:56get out of their half. I wish England were more patient. Their

1:56:56 > 1:57:04impatience is taking away their inability to not get the bonuses. We

1:57:04 > 1:57:10talk about their back 5 and Roby has joined the orchestra here in the

1:57:10 > 1:57:14second half. This is ideal for England because there will be so

1:57:14 > 1:57:17much space around the ruck. He's the one that can utilise that. Me

1:57:17 > 1:57:23personally, I'd love to see Roby start for England. It compliments

1:57:23 > 1:57:26the team so much more.

1:57:47 > 1:57:51We know the result is about performance now.We don't know too

1:57:51 > 1:57:55much about the numbers on the result but England need to be dominant at

1:57:55 > 1:58:02the end of this game and into positions that they can ex -- game

1:58:02 > 1:58:06and dominate and get into positions that they can do well. England are a

1:58:06 > 1:58:14good team but need to fix a few things up in my mind.

1:58:41 > 1:58:52He can't connect. Another England mistake. PNG have it back again.

1:58:52 > 1:58:57Another mistake but I can live with that one.

1:59:19 > 1:59:271999 at the Burleigh Bears, and they stumbled to victory against the

1:59:27 > 1:59:34Burleigh Bears did England.

1:59:39 > 1:59:48He's over to score! It's a picture of delight for the Papua New Guinean

1:59:48 > 1:59:57supporters here. Fans will be smiling at that. He's taken his

1:59:57 > 2:00:03chance exquisitely well. They have taken their opportunities and just

2:00:03 > 2:00:09waiting for one bloke. An opportunity to go into the corner.

2:00:09 > 2:00:14From that distance, we've seen all year with the Sheffield Eagles and

2:00:14 > 2:00:20now with Papua New Guinea, he's going to score.Play three England

2:00:20 > 2:00:24steam-rolled their way out of the half. Whitehead makes a break and

2:00:24 > 2:00:29can't deliver the pass that will have put them in for a try. The

2:00:29 > 2:00:34Papua New Guineans like to get in front of you and bounce a lot in

2:00:34 > 2:00:39their tackles which causes you to get space when you get all that.

2:00:39 > 2:00:47They won't give in. -- when you get off like that. They won't give in.

2:00:47 > 2:00:51They will finish confident and go into the next round on top of your

2:00:51 > 2:00:55game. That's the key for England. They must finish strong to go into

2:00:55 > 2:01:01the next round. The next 10 minutes are really vital here.I would love

2:01:01 > 2:01:19to see them complete a set.Only making his seventh international

2:01:19 > 2:01:27appearance today. A relative newcomer to the scene. He's found

2:01:27 > 2:01:36his kicking boots. Terrific. 20-6. They have some hope here. Something

2:01:36 > 2:01:48to cling on to, Papua New Guinea. It's a big Butler it lingers still.

2:01:48 > 2:01:54They won't die wondering. They've cracked the line. They'll try and

2:01:54 > 2:01:55find some space.

2:02:16 > 2:02:24England haven't had much ball or any ball in this second half. This

2:02:24 > 2:02:29attacking third area, they have all made breaks. So they just need more

2:02:29 > 2:02:34ball down there to execute some of the plays that they're clearly

2:02:34 > 2:02:41capable of.That's a good off-load. England are having to scramble a

2:02:41 > 2:02:48bit. They have to quell a little bit of this emotion that's growing

2:02:48 > 2:02:58amongst the Kumuls at the moment. He's found a way through. Off he

2:02:58 > 2:03:11goes.How good is he? It will be over 100m surely. 112m it is.

2:03:37 > 2:03:41He's not going to get that ball away.

2:03:52 > 2:03:56Papua New Guinea will get the ball close to their line.England have

2:03:56 > 2:04:01got the ball up the right part of the field. Now it's about keeping

2:04:01 > 2:04:07Papua New Guinea here. They need the discipline of mind to keep

2:04:07 > 2:04:10everything in order.

2:05:10 > 2:05:18He's hurt himself.I think he was worried about the shepherd.It's

2:05:18 > 2:05:24that what it was? He's had those knee problems around the years. I

2:05:24 > 2:05:38was worried there might be something there but there's clearly not.

2:05:38 > 2:05:44That's a really good kick. A terrific kick. There's nobody back

2:05:44 > 2:05:53there for the play the ball.

2:06:05 > 2:06:10They haven't still all got back behind the ball, Papua New Guinea.

2:06:10 > 2:06:15If they survive this, England should go for the throat here this next set

2:06:15 > 2:06:21of 6.That's been my point most of the game, New Guinea wouldn't be

2:06:21 > 2:06:28able to go arm in arm in relation to the kick game.I'm surprised they

2:06:28 > 2:06:37haven't slowed the game down to the tempo that would suit them.

2:06:53 > 2:06:5915 minutes of the game remaining. England looking to complete the job

2:06:59 > 2:07:04in style.

2:07:11 > 2:07:23He's lost the ball. Error 17.Sounds like a band - Error 17.A band.A

2:07:23 > 2:07:29music band.They won't be very good though, would they?Not if you were

2:07:29 > 2:07:36singing, no.They've got a bit of a break here. They're taking some

2:07:36 > 2:07:45water on.MacDonald has come flying across. O'Loughlin had all players

2:07:45 > 2:07:49outside him. We're not just talking about making the tackle, we're

2:07:49 > 2:07:53talking about awareness of the numbers. Do I need to ease up just

2:07:53 > 2:08:00so I can catch? Catch the ball and turn into him. Sitting above here

2:08:00 > 2:08:09and watching those numbers, not utilise them, it's criminal.What is

2:08:09 > 2:08:12the Tongan coach thinking about this? We saw that fantastic

2:08:12 > 2:08:16performance they put on against New Zealand in the group stages but a

2:08:16 > 2:08:21rather flat performance against Lebanon and only just hung on.You

2:08:21 > 2:08:26bust believe they'll be up for next week. -- best believe they'll be up

2:08:26 > 2:08:29for next week.

2:08:35 > 2:08:40By the way, we're going to ask you to set your alarm clocks early again

2:08:40 > 2:08:46next week. It's another early kick-off but you do not want to miss

2:08:46 > 2:08:52which is almost certainly England versus Tonga in the semifinal. The

2:08:52 > 2:09:01England fans are here in numbers. The occasion will be wonderful. Here

2:09:01 > 2:09:09is McGillvary. Off goes Watkins. Is he going to be caught? No. He's not.

2:09:09 > 2:09:16Macdonald can't get close. He gets over the -- MacDonald can't get

2:09:16 > 2:09:24close. He gets over the line.If I'm Wayne Bennett, I'd take McGillvary

2:09:24 > 2:09:29off the field now. He's been sensational. Their back three have

2:09:29 > 2:09:37been England's best players by a mile. He's been unstoppable today. A

2:09:37 > 2:09:48bit of fatigue in the New Guinea camp.A couple of times today he has

2:09:48 > 2:09:52anticipated McGillvary would break someone. He's had the situation

2:09:52 > 2:09:55where there's two people in the tackle and you think he will have to

2:09:55 > 2:10:00find the ground here. He busts through. He looks so powerful. If

2:10:00 > 2:10:05you look at him and Holmes, they're the two best players in the

2:10:05 > 2:10:10tournament. McGillvary has made the same impression on this tournament.

2:10:10 > 2:10:17But the way he eats up metres, it's just not a normal sort of run. It's

2:10:17 > 2:10:23a run that's so balanced.Between the two wingers you have 300m in

2:10:23 > 2:10:28yardage. For our viewers at home that is impress ev. It makes a whole

2:10:28 > 2:10:33lot of difference to the big blokes in the middle. They don't have to

2:10:33 > 2:10:38come back as far. It's unbelievable. Before a game starts you want your

2:10:38 > 2:10:48full-back and wing get 100-plus. McGillvary gets 200-plus.

2:10:52 > 2:10:56343 wingers the two wingers have done between them. Astonishing,

2:10:56 > 2:11:09isn't it?That's what makes it a little bit frustrating. We're trying

2:11:09 > 2:11:14to explain to our viewers. The back three are laying an an unbelievable

2:11:14 > 2:11:21platform to go on with it and find some more structure and shape. It's

2:11:21 > 2:11:25easier to say it than do it. They're all great footballers the England

2:11:25 > 2:11:36team. They wanted to push through and find their way.A kick-off here.

2:11:36 > 2:11:41A short kick-off.

2:11:48 > 2:11:59It's a penalty here. Hopefully you see that, top of the table, the

2:11:59 > 2:12:03World Cup running metres. We got that on our screen here. Hopefully

2:12:03 > 2:12:11you got it on your screen as well. No-one has gone more metres than

2:12:11 > 2:12:17McGillvary at this entire World Cup.

2:12:36 > 2:12:47They cut England in 2. Did they do it illegally here?Let's have a look

2:12:47 > 2:12:54here.A possible obstruction there.

2:13:28 > 2:13:34He comes back through that same hole. We're going to the board with

2:13:34 > 2:13:44a decision. In Lebanon's potential match-winning try against Tonga is

2:13:44 > 2:13:50ruled out the way it was, that had to be as well. No try twice Papua

2:13:50 > 2:13:57New Guinea thought they had scored. First half and now second half.A

2:13:57 > 2:14:23good decision. Clearly ajuticated he was impeded.Nine minutes to go.

2:14:23 > 2:14:28England looking to fill their boots in the last minute of the

2:14:28 > 2:14:39quarterfinal.

2:15:00 > 2:15:09The referee again just wants a second view of this. They just have

2:15:09 > 2:15:14to make absolutely sure.

2:15:31 > 2:15:38All the chasers are on side. A clean catch. We do have contact in the air

2:15:38 > 2:15:52there. So we'll play through. Something tight on that. Nice and

2:15:52 > 2:16:00slow. Nice and slow. Have you got something from the corner? Nice and

2:16:00 > 2:16:05slow here. OK.

2:16:17 > 2:16:25Set your alarm clocks, we're off to Auckland next week off the back of

2:16:25 > 2:16:38another Watkins try. Some satisfaction from this job today.

2:16:38 > 2:16:51They'll be pleased they're flying to Auckland tomorrow. The old days if

2:16:51 > 2:16:56any part of your body touched the corner post it was a no try. If you

2:16:56 > 2:16:59touched it before you put the ball down. Now the corner post does not

2:16:59 > 2:17:09come into play. All that matters is you stay in the field of play.Took

2:17:09 > 2:17:16100 years to get the technology to judge it. Back in the day a man was

2:17:16 > 2:17:21there and we'd be waiting for two weeks to get the result. If it had

2:17:21 > 2:17:27been no try it would have been a penalty to England as well. When

2:17:27 > 2:17:36they kicked the defender contested the body in the air. You're not

2:17:36 > 2:17:41allowed to contest when the player is in the air. There have been

2:17:41 > 2:17:46several wow moments and most of those have involved Tonga. England

2:17:46 > 2:17:50are playing Tonga in that semifinal next week. We know there's going to

2:17:50 > 2:17:54be thousands of England fans there. We know from the pictures we've seen

2:17:54 > 2:17:59from New Zealand the last couple of weeks, there is a fanaticism for

2:17:59 > 2:18:06that Tongan side. That game next week is going to be sensational.

2:18:06 > 2:18:09There's a World Cup final at stake to add to all those ingredients.

2:18:09 > 2:18:13Make sure you're there next week for that match. England's performance is

2:18:13 > 2:18:18scratchy today but more than good enough to get them there.Rocks and

2:18:18 > 2:18:23diamonds today. We will have to have all the diamonds next week. Take the

2:18:23 > 2:18:28juice out of the Tongan team. Kick the ball behind them. Make all those

2:18:28 > 2:18:31big players go back and stitch that performance together that we're

2:18:31 > 2:18:39looking for.The four best teams have made the play-offs - Australia,

2:18:39 > 2:18:43Fiji, Tonga and England. The four best teams are through to the

2:18:43 > 2:18:50semifinals. I can't wait for it. We've always talked about the big 3

2:18:50 > 2:18:54- England, Australia, New Zealand. I think we have a big five now,

2:18:54 > 2:19:01haven't we? Tonga and Fiji joining the party. The tackle wasn't

2:19:01 > 2:19:09complete there. The referee is saying play on.

2:19:14 > 2:19:22An injury there. He's OK. He's getting back to his feet? He's a

2:19:22 > 2:19:28little in strife here. You can see him running back into the defensive

2:19:28 > 2:19:42line. It will be a major concern.He got a bit of a stinger. A nerve on

2:19:42 > 2:20:00your shoulder. Had contact on it. Makes the arm very sore. He's so

2:20:00 > 2:20:04composed as a person on and off the field. His experience, he's been

2:20:04 > 2:20:08through many, many victories as a club player and a representative

2:20:08 > 2:20:17footballer for a long period of time here now. He is the try captain for

2:20:17 > 2:20:25England.

2:20:36 > 2:20:42A big character who has caught the eye of one or two in the NRL in the

2:20:42 > 2:20:49last week or so or the last month or It's a penalty. -- month or so. It's

2:20:49 > 2:20:55a penalty. Offside. England's penalty.Looking at the completion

2:20:55 > 2:21:01rate - 53% or something for England. I think sometimes we get a bit

2:21:01 > 2:21:05negtev, it's not because we've want to be negative on them, because we

2:21:05 > 2:21:09expect this team to go back. We think they'll make the final against

2:21:09 > 2:21:12Australia. They are a very, very talented team. If they put it

2:21:12 > 2:21:16together there's no reason they can't win this World Cup.Maybe the

2:21:16 > 2:21:20encouragement is they have yet to put it together. We're at the

2:21:20 > 2:21:33business end of the tournament. Roby is over but held up. They'll have to

2:21:33 > 2:21:40go back ten metres to play the ball again.

2:22:13 > 2:22:28England will get it back. They will get the advantage.Job done for

2:22:28 > 2:22:35England. Big game next week. Big game. I'm getting punched in the

2:22:35 > 2:22:43ribs here by Brian Noble. We are really looking forward to that. It

2:22:43 > 2:22:47was all planned out to be New Zealand-England in the semifinal.

2:22:47 > 2:22:51That's what the form book suggested. This World Cup has not necessarily

2:22:51 > 2:22:56been about form books. They've enjoyed themselves the Papua New

2:22:56 > 2:23:00Guineans.

2:23:09 > 2:23:17A chance to finish things off for Hall. 35 international appearances

2:23:17 > 2:23:21now and that's his 34th international try.They put all

2:23:21 > 2:23:26their numbers from the scrum here. Widdop's ability to stand the

2:23:26 > 2:23:30defender up and go the outside. You can't give these wingers half a

2:23:30 > 2:23:36chance these days. They're very acrobatic. Papua New Guinea not

2:23:36 > 2:23:40getting off the line as hard as they were earlier which gave them a

2:23:40 > 2:23:46little bit more time. They tried that a couple of times from scrums.

2:23:46 > 2:23:53The key dominance in all their tries on an edge is Widdop. He has the

2:23:53 > 2:23:59ability to sum the situation up as well. He knows who to commit to

2:23:59 > 2:24:04create the space. He's a good player. He has time.There will bow

2:24:04 > 2:24:08a head check on him this week. If they decide he cannot play, do you

2:24:08 > 2:24:14bring Williams in at six and keep Widdop at one or put Widdop back in

2:24:14 > 2:24:20at six again and put Lomax if he's fit at one?Williams is a runner of

2:24:20 > 2:24:24the ball. He would rather get the ball and run the line himself and

2:24:24 > 2:24:29not create a lot on the outside as much as Brown very much works within

2:24:29 > 2:24:34a system here. You couldn't move Widdop because there's no-one better

2:24:34 > 2:24:42in the squad. Lomax has had one game. He's got it.He has found it.

2:24:42 > 2:24:48We just watch this try again here. So many attributes Widdop has. He

2:24:48 > 2:24:56has time with the ball Lomax when he gets -- ball now. Lomax when he has

2:24:56 > 2:25:00the ball, he doesn't have the evasion and tempo in his run. In

2:25:00 > 2:25:06international rugby league he doesn't have that physicality. He

2:25:06 > 2:25:13seems to be a little bit hypo when he gets the ball. You can't change

2:25:13 > 2:25:28him.There's the hooter. Walmsley was thinking about going the 90m.

2:25:28 > 2:25:34England fans in raptures. Many thousands inside the stadium have

2:25:34 > 2:25:39enjoyed that result 36-6. It's a win for England. Job done. This stage of

2:25:39 > 2:25:44the tournament, it is not so much about the way you play, it's the

2:25:44 > 2:25:49result on the board at the end of the game and that is the big thing.

2:25:49 > 2:25:54England will have one or two things to fix up, I'm sure, between now and

2:25:54 > 2:25:59Tonga next week. There's two semifinals confirmed - Australia

2:25:59 > 2:26:03against Fiji in Brisbane on the Saturday. Tonga against England on

2:26:03 > 2:26:09the Sunday in Auckland. We're going to be hearing from one of the

2:26:09 > 2:26:16England players in just a few moments. Ryan Girdler is there. Mark

2:26:16 > 2:26:26out of 10?Probably 5. Way too many errors. Not a structured win. They

2:26:26 > 2:26:31understand the stakes next week. I'm expecting a full performance we've

2:26:31 > 2:26:35been wanting from England. I still think the three things I've been

2:26:35 > 2:26:39banging on about - the kicking game needs to improve. And their

2:26:39 > 2:26:42insistence on providing a kick at certain stages of the game, to get

2:26:42 > 2:26:49players down to the other end of the field. Their execution is and their

2:26:49 > 2:26:53displan, England need to stick to that complete performance together.

2:26:53 > 2:26:57They have power and size:

2:27:13 > 2:27:19That's a stat that will be troubling camp. 18 errors they made in that --

2:27:19 > 2:27:22the England camp. 18 errors they made in that game:

2:27:25 > 2:27:30I'm not sure we're going to get anybody at the moment. Let's go back

2:27:30 > 2:27:35to the guys in the studio. England winners here by

2:27:35 > 2:27:35to the guys in the studio. England winners here by 36-6.

2:27:35 > 2:27:40to the guys in the studio. England winners here by 36-6. Yeah, thank

2:27:40 > 2:27:43you very much to the commentary team:

2:27:58 > 2:28:04Is 5 out of 10 a bit harsh?Yeah, I think so. I would have probably gone

2:28:04 > 2:28:156 out of 10. 36-6, it's job done. Job done. I think we have enough to

2:28:15 > 2:28:21beat Tonga by playing like this. I know we made a lot of errors, but

2:28:21 > 2:28:27Australia, if we can turn up in a final in a fortnight's time and

2:28:27 > 2:28:31those errors don't happen, we're in with a really, really good chance.

2:28:31 > 2:28:36We're playing really good stuff. We just beat a team 36-6 who have

2:28:36 > 2:28:40scored 128 points in the last three games, scored 21 tries. They scored

2:28:40 > 2:28:48one try today.Look, 36-6 is a great scoreline. But I think you can't

2:28:48 > 2:28:52give Tonga those opportunities because they're powerful and big. If

2:28:52 > 2:28:56you make mistakes in the wrong areas, they will capitalise. They're

2:28:56 > 2:29:00a different quality from Papua New Guinea. Maybe a bit lax against

2:29:00 > 2:29:05Lebanon. But you've got to cut the errors out. You can't give Tonga -

2:29:05 > 2:29:09you need to be disciplined. Because the big Tongan guys will not want to

2:29:09 > 2:29:14carry the ball from their own 20. If you make mistakes in their own 20

2:29:14 > 2:29:18they'll come at you all day. There's a massive Tongan contingent in

2:29:18 > 2:29:22Auckland. They'll be up for it. Maybe they beat New Zealand, yes,

2:29:22 > 2:29:27that's one thing. But England will have to be far more disciplined and

2:29:27 > 2:29:32clinical against Tonga.But there are positives?Yes. Without doubt.

2:29:32 > 2:29:39When England do actually get the ball in the right hands, they look

2:29:39 > 2:29:43exciting and the challenge is to reduce the number of errors and

2:29:43 > 2:29:47that's something you can do quickly. It's not structural or a bigger

2:29:47 > 2:29:52thing, it's errors. You can get a bit obsessed with it and consumed by

2:29:52 > 2:29:57errors and talk about it too much. It's almost a self-fulfilling

2:29:57 > 2:30:04prophecy.Everyone is compared to the Australians. They don't make

2:30:04 > 2:30:08many mistakes. The things they have done badly, England, they can

2:30:08 > 2:30:12rectify easily. It's not about creatiskty or organisation, it's

2:30:12 > 2:30:18just a stupid lack of concentration. When the opposition gets better,

2:30:18 > 2:30:19your constitution levels get better.

2:30:30 > 2:30:32was going to say. You may have a lap of -- lapse of concentration against

2:30:32 > 2:30:37Papua New Guinea and be fine, but against Australia, all of a sudden

2:30:37 > 2:30:42that changes things. It focuses the mind. The only negative about

2:30:42 > 2:30:46England for me is that they have periods where they have lapsed with

2:30:46 > 2:30:51their attention to detail in every game. Although I appreciate, and I

2:30:51 > 2:30:56agree, there is more to come from England, you would like to have seen

2:30:56 > 2:31:02more throughout the tournament.I think they are just getting ready to

2:31:02 > 2:31:09be getting people and putting it together. I think the plan after the

2:31:09 > 2:31:13Australia game was to build back up for Australia and I feel they are

2:31:13 > 2:31:18doing that. I think next week we will improve again and we know if we

2:31:18 > 2:31:22play ten out of ten against Australia we can defeat them.Like

2:31:22 > 2:31:26we mentioned last week, they did the same thing in training. You focus on

2:31:26 > 2:31:31short sharp no errors in training. Whatever you do in training you

2:31:31 > 2:31:38replicate in the match. The intense and so this will all be on no matter

2:31:38 > 2:31:43how tired you are, you have to focus on complete your sets and put

2:31:43 > 2:31:47Australia in their own quarter. The man of the match award was given to

2:31:47 > 2:31:52Kallum Watkins. Here he is. congratulations. Into the World Cup

2:31:52 > 2:31:56semifinals.I think Wayne Bennett will be happy. yes. Happy. The

2:31:56 > 2:32:00performance was scratchy time, especially in the first half, but

2:32:00 > 2:32:06full credit to PNG, they are a physical side and it is hard to

2:32:06 > 2:32:11match. Was called some nice tries in the second.Your combination on the

2:32:11 > 2:32:16right side. Are you happy with how that develops? It is going well. We

2:32:16 > 2:32:20played together last year with internationals and Jerry does a

2:32:20 > 2:32:29great job of carrying the ball. His -- ears carrying it superbly. It is

2:32:29 > 2:32:34just a great win for us. Semifinals and really excited to do continue

2:32:34 > 2:32:41the journey.Have you seen anything of Tonga next week?They had a great

2:32:41 > 2:32:46result against New Zealand and against 11 on yesterday. They got

2:32:46 > 2:32:56through that, it will be exciting. It should be a great day and a great

2:32:56 > 2:33:01battle.Good luck next week. Looking at all Watkins McGillvary

2:33:01 > 2:33:06partnership in a moment. Constant negative comments from the media

2:33:06 > 2:33:13cannot be doing our game any good. It is interesting listening to the

2:33:13 > 2:33:15England players talk in interviews, beat full-time or part-time, they

2:33:15 > 2:33:21are using the words scratching. They are not 100% happy with their own

2:33:21 > 2:33:28performance.I feel they have been positive, actually. I still believe,

2:33:28 > 2:33:33and I ask all the people out there who support England, to believe. I

2:33:33 > 2:33:36believe we are capable of winning this. The boys will be critical.

2:33:36 > 2:33:43They are professional. They will pull every little detail out of the

2:33:43 > 2:33:46performance and analyse it and there will be things and areas where they

2:33:46 > 2:33:49wish to improve. It is not negativity. It is picking up little

2:33:49 > 2:33:56things that make big differences. I think they have won convincingly

2:33:56 > 2:34:00today but if you step up the performance to the semifinal and the

2:34:00 > 2:34:03final and you need to remove the errors because I think that the key

2:34:03 > 2:34:13player for me is Widdop. He has an The X Factor. More than McGillvary.

2:34:13 > 2:34:18McGillvary does he is job and he is brilliant. The combination with

2:34:18 > 2:34:25Watkins. But The X Factor player, when nothing is on and you need to

2:34:25 > 2:34:33score tries, Widdop is your man. User during the second half, John,

2:34:33 > 2:34:35McGillvary is going into the stratosphere. That is usually

2:34:35 > 2:34:40positive.He has literally gone to a different level. I think is the best

2:34:40 > 2:34:45player in the tournament. A couple of reasons - his try scoring

2:34:45 > 2:34:49ability, there is no doubt he can finish. Is big, strong and balanced

2:34:49 > 2:34:55and playing with Kallum Watkins, it is a huge benefit to him that these

2:34:55 > 2:35:00carriers that I love. There are no winners who can do this, I don't

2:35:00 > 2:35:05believe. Here is so strong. He gets England on the front foot and is

2:35:05 > 2:35:11absolutely crucial to England playing well. Watkins instinctively

2:35:11 > 2:35:15supporting McGillvary knowing that he can make a break and Watkins and

2:35:15 > 2:35:22if it is. Picking a man of the match but for me, it was McGillvary. You

2:35:22 > 2:35:26go to a stage in your career where you just feel that anything you do

2:35:26 > 2:35:30comes off and I think McGillvary is going through that stage at the

2:35:30 > 2:35:37moment.If you're going to be in the form of your life, is good to do at

2:35:37 > 2:35:45the World Cup.I think he has been outstanding in this tournament and I

2:35:45 > 2:35:50think we have an idea of exactly where we need to play. You mention

2:35:50 > 2:35:55Widdop, I think he is having his best Widdop -- England tournament. I

2:35:55 > 2:36:03believe we can grow and get better. James Roby when he came on, he was

2:36:03 > 2:36:11brilliant. It seems, he seems to make the right decision everytime.

2:36:11 > 2:36:19The good thing is to have variety. Some are more entertaining than the

2:36:19 > 2:36:26others were as James Roby is solid. I am a great admirer of him. I want

2:36:26 > 2:36:34to come onto Ruby Hodgson bubble in a moment and also how of Tonga made

2:36:34 > 2:36:38target McGillvary but let's get more reaction now from Melbourne and

2:36:38 > 2:36:46Gareth Widdop has given us his thoughts.Certainly one of the most

2:36:46 > 2:36:53physical games? They are a great team and a great success.You had a

2:36:53 > 2:36:57great view from the back.80 think your boys performed? I am pleased

2:36:57 > 2:37:05with the wind. We need to fix up many of our errors and ball control.

2:37:05 > 2:37:10We're not doing that well enough. How about yourself? Potentially you

2:37:10 > 2:37:15play fullback next week. Where would you like to be?Wherever I am put I

2:37:15 > 2:37:20am happy. I want to go out there, try my best and do my job. I will

2:37:20 > 2:37:25wait to see what the coach decides. Let's return to James Roby and Josh

2:37:25 > 2:37:32Hodgson. Ian Wilson says quite simply, Ruby has to start for

2:37:32 > 2:37:36England next week. Someone else says that England looks so much better

2:37:36 > 2:37:41with Roby on the field. I thought Hodgson started the game well the

2:37:41 > 2:37:48James Roby is a different player and when Bennett has to decide what is

2:37:48 > 2:37:53best for the England team...I would start with Roby and when he loosened

2:37:53 > 2:37:57up a little bit and I would bring Hodgson on. But I would start with

2:37:57 > 2:38:02Roby.They are both fit guys and they both instinctively want to

2:38:02 > 2:38:08play. Neither a comfortable being spell that but I think James Roby, I

2:38:08 > 2:38:13can tell you what he offers. He offers honesty and integrity with

2:38:13 > 2:38:16his actions and he is a dangerous running thread with the ball. Josh

2:38:16 > 2:38:21Hodgson controlled the game magnificently well and I think when

2:38:21 > 2:38:25-- Wayne Bennett is showing his hand. Earlier it was said that this

2:38:25 > 2:38:33is the team, pretty much, assuming that some players come through the

2:38:33 > 2:38:39concussion protocol, I think it would be gale, Laughlan, Hodgson and

2:38:39 > 2:38:44Widdop. We spoke about McGillvary, for me he is a forward. I think sure

2:38:44 > 2:38:49no Laughlan has been exceptional this tournament. Everything good

2:38:49 > 2:38:53they do with the ball comes through him. He and McGillvary are very

2:38:53 > 2:38:58important now going into the big game.A look at this try that Roby

2:38:58 > 2:39:06was involved in.Like I said he just seems to make the right decision,

2:39:06 > 2:39:09Roby, and he finds and offloads. This is rate vision from Gareth. He

2:39:09 > 2:39:16makes himself a space, sees a gap. A little kick and then Currie does his

2:39:16 > 2:39:21job. That is what Widdop brings. A little bit of magic on the edge. Is

2:39:21 > 2:39:25in the right position, he gets things right and he makes the calls

2:39:25 > 2:39:30on things and comes up with plays like that.He has a decision making

2:39:30 > 2:39:36ability of a half-back. Roby created an opportunity for him but the

2:39:36 > 2:39:39decision making and execution was exceptional and against really good

2:39:39 > 2:39:44defences, as we know. Sometimes it takes something off the cuff,

2:39:44 > 2:39:48playing literally the hand that is in front of you, that is where

2:39:48 > 2:39:53having, and, actually, Lomax can do that as well Widdop executes it

2:39:53 > 2:40:01perfectly.If it is Australia and they are up against Johnathan

2:40:01 > 2:40:07Thurston or Cooper Cronk, we are all saying how great he is. That is a

2:40:07 > 2:40:13fantastic skill. As I said earlier, an The X Factor. When you get to

2:40:13 > 2:40:17take the matches, you need someone to do something special, to win you

2:40:17 > 2:40:21a game. And I think he is your man. That's here now from the England

2:40:21 > 2:40:27captain. Sean, job done and as captain, what you make of the

2:40:27 > 2:40:36performance?It was a bit scratchy at times and there is a lot to work

2:40:36 > 2:40:39on but quite pleased to be progressing in the competition. Your

2:40:39 > 2:40:46back free again were immense today. yes. Outstanding, I thought. There

2:40:46 > 2:40:49was a bit scratchy across-the-board was a lot of ball turning over. We

2:40:49 > 2:40:53did that a lot in the second half but the back free goddess out of a

2:40:53 > 2:40:59lot of tough situations.Gavin Brown took a heavy knock on the first

2:40:59 > 2:41:11half. Was that the reason he set out the second?I think so. -- Kevan

2:41:11 > 2:41:16Brown -- Kevin. And how about next week? Tonga will have massive

2:41:16 > 2:41:20support.You will be a heck of an occasion. The boys are looking

2:41:20 > 2:41:25forward to it. To be in a Serbian -- semifinalist special so we want to

2:41:25 > 2:41:33make the most of it.There are many rugby league fans pleased to be in

2:41:33 > 2:41:36the semifinals and then you hear the players and they are downplaying

2:41:36 > 2:41:41things. Tariff said it was a good job, England, let's look at

2:41:41 > 2:41:49positives rather than errors in it there is a real...We can analyse

2:41:49 > 2:41:54the performance in depth. Ultimately what was crucial about the

2:41:54 > 2:41:59performance was winning and they did that. England did the job. But we

2:41:59 > 2:42:02are talking about two different things the. We're talking about the

2:42:02 > 2:42:07level we want England to be out and the level where they are. There is

2:42:07 > 2:42:10certainly an element of growth in this England side. They are

2:42:10 > 2:42:13definitely... There are a lot of positives we can talk about.

2:42:13 > 2:42:19Ultimately, Wayne Bennett at the start of the tournament, he focused

2:42:19 > 2:42:24on errors and made everyone aware of the issue. It would be remiss of us

2:42:24 > 2:42:28not to reference that when we analyse the game, I think.As a

2:42:28 > 2:42:37supporter you look at it and say 36- six, great scoreline. As a pundit

2:42:37 > 2:42:43you look and you say OK. And a player, a player wants to know how

2:42:43 > 2:42:48to approve -- improve next week. I think Ian Millward said it is the

2:42:48 > 2:42:51level of concentration throughout the game. You cannot switch off and

2:42:51 > 2:42:57have unforced errors. Because that's when you hand the ball over to

2:42:57 > 2:43:01someone with the quality of Australia and they scored.Ian

2:43:01 > 2:43:05Millward said in commentary, didn't he, that you would look of the coach

2:43:05 > 2:43:09for seven errors.I think it would seven. I have never heard seven

2:43:09 > 2:43:14referenced before as a randomly generated number. I would work on

2:43:14 > 2:43:22under ten errors.Look at this. He does not need to throw a path there.

2:43:22 > 2:43:28They could have been out of sight in the first ten minutes of the second

2:43:28 > 2:43:32half.Were told last week or the week before about our identity and

2:43:32 > 2:43:37what we stand for as a nation and how we play. I think our errors, in

2:43:37 > 2:43:42particular in this game, are not from overplaying or getting the

2:43:42 > 2:43:45balance right. I think they are individual errors and mistake.Such

2:43:45 > 2:43:51an easy fix.That they are fine margins, aren't they? Without a

2:43:51 > 2:43:55doubt.The great thing is that we have gone through and made a shed

2:43:55 > 2:44:02load of errors that our fences much stronger. Like I just pointed out,

2:44:02 > 2:44:06bubbly in New Guinea scored 21 tries in the last three games. We kept

2:44:06 > 2:44:12them to one.It is good practice, isn't it? You give them a lot of

2:44:12 > 2:44:16ball, make a lot of tackles and become efficient at defending.

2:44:16 > 2:44:19England's defence has been exceptional. Let's be honest, they

2:44:19 > 2:44:23will be more demanding about what they can get from their attack but

2:44:23 > 2:44:29we are in the semifinal and we get a chance to attack. From there we got

2:44:29 > 2:44:33a chance to probably play Australia in Brisbane and that is a huge

2:44:33 > 2:44:37opportunity.Another early start next Saturday for England. It will

2:44:37 > 2:44:41take me until then to recover from today. You are not alone. Let's hear

2:44:41 > 2:44:51from one of the England coaches. You have won the game, how satisfied are

2:44:51 > 2:44:55you with the performance?Very satisfied. They scored six points.

2:44:55 > 2:45:02We scored 36 on a 50% completion rate so all we need to do is raise

2:45:02 > 2:45:09that completion rate we know we need to get better. The objective was to

2:45:09 > 2:45:15get to Auckland and then to get to Brisbane. Is an element of the level

2:45:15 > 2:45:18of opposition that you are up against in our lack of concentration

2:45:18 > 2:45:22at times that maybe when you play the better teams that concentration

2:45:22 > 2:45:27will improve?I think so. They were good today, PNG. That is the best

2:45:27 > 2:45:30they have played. They had a good game against Ireland and they played

2:45:30 > 2:45:36well today. They were getting off the line, the contract was hard.

2:45:36 > 2:45:40There were physical and they ran the ball hard. They turned it into a

2:45:40 > 2:45:45tough game for which was always going to be a good lead into a game

2:45:45 > 2:45:48against Tonga. That went down really well. We were sloppy ties with the

2:45:48 > 2:45:51ball. We allowed them to make it messier which suited them. But we

2:45:51 > 2:45:56scored some fantastic tries and we kept them down to one try which is

2:45:56 > 2:46:00always a positive.How about Kevin Brown? A heavy knock on the first

2:46:00 > 2:46:04half.Is there any concern? I think it will be fine. We're waiting for

2:46:04 > 2:46:09the doctors to report. They were just showing proportion at half time

2:46:09 > 2:46:13to having set out the second half and we saw we were in a stronger

2:46:13 > 2:46:17position to James Roby out there and move Hodgson to the halves. We will

2:46:17 > 2:46:24see what the doctors do.It is they are called. Familiar territory next

2:46:24 > 2:46:32week?I'm looking forward to being in Auckland again, been a while.

2:46:32 > 2:46:36Having a look at some of these pictures now. If Kevin Brown is not

2:46:36 > 2:46:43available next week, Jonathan, how would you reshuffle? Because you

2:46:43 > 2:46:51would want to leave Widdop, wouldn't you?I would want to leave him at

2:46:51 > 2:46:55full-back and I think if it is George Williams, you stick him in.

2:46:55 > 2:46:58But fingers crossed everything will be OK. I would definitely leave

2:46:58 > 2:47:06Widdop at full-back. I think he can step up, as they said before, if

2:47:06 > 2:47:16Gail is under pressure he can bring in his X factor. From what Dennis as

2:47:16 > 2:47:19saying that, from seeing him on the sideline, they are just trying to

2:47:19 > 2:47:24after him and these smart. Menu at half time that the game was job done

2:47:24 > 2:47:28and it was a smart decision. He will be right, I am certain.Although as

2:47:28 > 2:47:32we said at half time and, the responsibility is to protect the

2:47:32 > 2:47:39player.Yes. A responsibility to protect the athletes and as a rule

2:47:39 > 2:47:44we have sent the benchmark of how that is done. It was good to see him

2:47:44 > 2:47:48not come back onto the field after a good nasty had not. He will be fine.

2:47:48 > 2:47:56Lomax will be back fit. I am sure we will discuss meeting this week. But

2:47:56 > 2:48:00even if he is, why would you change something...I don't think we will.

2:48:00 > 2:48:04It is likely they will have a meeting to discuss the team and I'm

2:48:04 > 2:48:09sure he will be discussed as an option. I think the team is settled.

2:48:09 > 2:48:19I am excited that they have so much more to give and like was said, they

2:48:19 > 2:48:25are not being overbuilt. Burgess keeping bests expectation suppressed

2:48:25 > 2:48:36nicely.We had to attend the final, we have defeated Australia wants.

2:48:36 > 2:48:42We've just been tweeted all in capital letters, I fancy us to win

2:48:42 > 2:48:47this. Let's hear from Jermaine McGillvary. You have your supporters

2:48:47 > 2:48:55here.I do have a couple of people in the crowd. I was welcoming the

2:48:55 > 2:48:59support. I think there is more and more supporters for US is cup those

2:48:59 > 2:49:06on. 11 tries in ten appearances? Yes. Not a bad record. Still not a

2:49:06 > 2:49:14complete performance by us but it is something to work on.Still a lot of

2:49:14 > 2:49:17improvement. Is that a slight concern that the mistakes are still

2:49:17 > 2:49:21being made and it has not been slowing as it have been?Possibly.

2:49:21 > 2:49:26We are still getting victories. We need to be better than next weekend.

2:49:26 > 2:49:33Pushing onto the final as well and we need to be a of a lot better.

2:49:33 > 2:49:38Next week has got to be a huge, emotional and physical challenge. It

2:49:38 > 2:49:42steps up every week. Tonga are outstanding and we are looking

2:49:42 > 2:49:50forward to it. Props to PNG. They were physical but could not hold on.

2:49:50 > 2:49:53Hopefully next week we will fix that up. And the England fans, they have

2:49:53 > 2:49:58been travelling with you?The number of England fans who've travelled

2:49:58 > 2:50:05over is also on. It helps us immensely. They did benefit, didn't

2:50:05 > 2:50:10they come from playing in Melbourne and not in Papua New Guinea which we

2:50:10 > 2:50:14touched on last week. The would have been nice for the tournament.A

2:50:14 > 2:50:19massive benefit. I think you look at the tournament and think the game

2:50:19 > 2:50:24should have been in Port Moresby. If you were a co-host, which there.

2:50:24 > 2:50:29There should have been a quarter-final in PNG. It played into

2:50:29 > 2:50:32England's hands and... You look at the Stadium and did not being

2:50:32 > 2:50:38packed. You knew it had been packed out in Port Moresby. And people in

2:50:38 > 2:50:42Auckland would have been trying to climb the floodlights which would

2:50:42 > 2:50:45have been fantastic but from an England point of view it is job

2:50:45 > 2:50:49done. It was almost a home for us there today and many English fans

2:50:49 > 2:50:54have gone out now so the business end.One try we have not shown you

2:50:54 > 2:50:59from the second half is Ryan Hall's tried. We have been talking a lot

2:50:59 > 2:51:05about McGillvary. Call has been quiet but amazing for work there

2:51:05 > 2:51:10from Widdop. To have that little space and to do this with your

2:51:10 > 2:51:18footwork. Stand-up, the defender and then a trademark finish. A great

2:51:18 > 2:51:23finish. He will get confidence from that because it has been a difficult

2:51:23 > 2:51:27tournament so that side of the field. Through no fault of his own,

2:51:27 > 2:51:32probably. And yes. Tricky getting used to different combinations. He

2:51:32 > 2:51:37has had to adapt. Up on southern McGillvary said in his interview,

2:51:37 > 2:51:41said that their quality shone through in this game. And I think

2:51:41 > 2:51:45that is what has got England through the games. Really, they have had

2:51:45 > 2:51:52more quality in their side than the opposition. And against a side like

2:51:52 > 2:51:57Tonga or Australia were the quality is equal of an execution comes in

2:51:57 > 2:52:02and for me that is where we are demanding. I have been demanding

2:52:02 > 2:52:06these guys to go in and execute. If we execute against Tonga and execute

2:52:06 > 2:52:11against Australia, our quality in the execution will dictate if we

2:52:11 > 2:52:24win. You have Alex, of the and making a huge impact.I think

2:52:24 > 2:52:31Laughlan has a special... It is a loose forward play which Australia

2:52:31 > 2:52:36doesn't have. They have Cooper Cronk, Carmichael -- and Billy

2:52:36 > 2:52:47Slater. If they can do the job, that is something where will we be

2:52:47 > 2:52:52labouring the fact, mistakes. Cut the mistakes out and they are equal

2:52:52 > 2:52:56to anyone in this competition. That's why ex-players and current

2:52:56 > 2:53:02players are saying but that is the difference. Well, yes... Sort of

2:53:02 > 2:53:04halfway between the two.In Purgatory. You still have a

2:53:04 > 2:53:15contract. He is in preseason.Us what you are going to come in. No, I

2:53:15 > 2:53:20think we are talking about Australia and England. They are probably

2:53:20 > 2:53:27yelling at pictures of players right now. Tonga have a part to play in

2:53:27 > 2:53:34this.It will be heated. They are brutal and they will be up for this.

2:53:34 > 2:53:42It will be like playing in Tonga in Auckland and they are called the

2:53:42 > 2:53:46friendly isles... They are not. On the field they are not. What will

2:53:46 > 2:53:51England have learned from what love and an did against Tonga yesterday?

2:53:51 > 2:53:56When they had coaches meetings and team meetings and looked at the

2:53:56 > 2:54:01Tate, what will they see as the weight to get a Tonga?Keep the ball

2:54:01 > 2:54:10in play. Come off our own goal line. To those two things. They are a big

2:54:10 > 2:54:14risk, they will not want to get behind the ball, they will not want

2:54:14 > 2:54:21to bring it out of there in.Keep the ball on the field. Don't give

2:54:21 > 2:54:26them an inch, don't allow them to Brive. When they are fresh they are

2:54:26 > 2:54:30as dangerous as anybody in this competition. If you starve them of

2:54:30 > 2:54:33energy and possession and field position, they are different animal

2:54:33 > 2:54:39altogether. Exhaust on. Grind them down. Is what we can do.Kicking

2:54:39 > 2:54:45game is crucial. Everyone of them would put their hand up in the

2:54:45 > 2:54:50English half but when they are in their own 20 metre area, they are

2:54:50 > 2:54:56not as keen.Did you see that today? Against Papua New Guinea?I did but

2:54:56 > 2:55:00I think we did it in a different way today. I think Papua New Guinea

2:55:00 > 2:55:03looked to me like they had overtrained during the week and were

2:55:03 > 2:55:07dead on their feet after ten or 12 units. I don't think we did anything

2:55:07 > 2:55:12impressive during that spell. I think what we were talking about, if

2:55:12 > 2:55:17you want a technical term, we need to outlast played so we finish on

2:55:17 > 2:55:24their goal line a lot more. Actually, when we watch the

2:55:24 > 2:55:29Australia game in the first group, the difference in the first half

2:55:29 > 2:55:32from starch and field position was huge. Australia were starting

2:55:32 > 2:55:36virtually on the halfway line, England were starting on their own

2:55:36 > 2:55:39goal line. That can be exhausting. Exactly did it we were fortunate

2:55:39 > 2:55:45because we had two main at the back who are bringing the ball back

2:55:45 > 2:55:53superbly. I think... I mean... John mentioned in earlier. Off-camera,

2:55:53 > 2:56:01but we think that possibly, will target germane and put some high

2:56:01 > 2:56:05ball so that as soon as it catches they tackle him and they may not see

2:56:05 > 2:56:10him carrying the ball. There was a tall left winger in the Tongans...

2:56:10 > 2:56:15He will try to get over the top of him and not his confidence a bit. In

2:56:15 > 2:56:19a given time to run back. But looking at Leven on, maybe they had

2:56:19 > 2:56:24gone in, maybe they got through to the quarter-finals. Leven on and not

2:56:24 > 2:56:33the strongest. They may have dropped their focus.I think England are in

2:56:33 > 2:56:36a great place. Things that probably should not happen are happening

2:56:36 > 2:56:39which points to the fact that we need to keep believing. You would

2:56:39 > 2:56:43not expect Papua New Guinea's bass player to go off injured after two

2:56:43 > 2:56:48minutes and not return. So the fact that the quarter-final was not in

2:56:48 > 2:56:52Port Moresby, the fact that the Kiwis got to feed and by Tonga early

2:56:52 > 2:56:58on. The path we seem to be following at the moment, the fact that Leven

2:56:58 > 2:57:02on nearly defeated, over the weekend to shows England that if we play a

2:57:02 > 2:57:08decent brain -- brand we will get a win.Things may happen in English

2:57:08 > 2:57:15sport. There is a lot of things we benefit from usually. And England

2:57:15 > 2:57:23Fiji final? We could hear from England had coached here is Wayne

2:57:23 > 2:57:38Bennett.That was the good the bad and the garden today. Some good

2:57:38 > 2:57:44defence and nice buildup with some of the play. What was the bad? The

2:57:44 > 2:57:53lack of discipline with the football. It was ugly to watch. How

2:57:53 > 2:58:00about the second half?It was a whole half to look... I thought this

2:58:00 > 2:58:07morning we were due to regain where we have not been at our best. Was

2:58:07 > 2:58:11not been perfect but we have been pretty good. I think we had that day

2:58:11 > 2:58:37today.inaudible. It is not often in a press conference where you see the

2:58:37 > 2:58:40press talking more than the interviewee. The questions were

2:58:40 > 2:58:46longer than the answers. There you go. There are the two semifinals.

2:58:46 > 2:58:50Australia against Fiji. Highlights next Friday lunchtime at one o'clock

2:58:50 > 2:58:58on BBC Two. England will play, in Auckland at 430 on BBC One next

2:58:58 > 2:59:07Saturday morning. Kevin, let's just go back four years. The last

2:59:07 > 2:59:13semifinal we were in was so built up that the pressure got to us. I'm

2:59:13 > 2:59:18glad everybody is playing a downward again next week is going to be.Is a

2:59:18 > 2:59:25fair comment? I don't think so. To have a home World Cup was special

2:59:25 > 2:59:31last time. As tough as it was but when I look back now and think about

2:59:31 > 2:59:37where we are now, we probably did not deserve the last time. We will

2:59:37 > 2:59:41probably not ready to play in the World Cup final. It has been 22

2:59:41 > 2:59:45years since England was in the last final. I think we are ready this

2:59:45 > 2:59:49time. I think we are in a great position. What Steve McNamara has

2:59:49 > 2:59:53put in place and Wayne has grabbed hold of, I think it is all about the

2:59:53 > 2:59:57players. We are doing business at the moment.Steve McNamara does

2:59:57 > 3:00:04deserve a lot of credit because there was there was a lot in the

3:00:04 > 3:00:07setup behind the scenes of England. He deserves some credit. Wayne

3:00:07 > 3:00:11Bennett has certainly taken the reins but England are a great spot

3:00:11 > 3:00:15here. Take everything that has happened thus far, even I can be

3:00:15 > 3:00:23back, you take a.And, also, the key players have stayed injury free.

3:00:23 > 3:00:28Today, I don't think there injuries at all. That is important when you

3:00:28 > 3:00:34are in a tournament, to keep your key players fit. And a key player

3:00:34 > 3:00:38who was injured is now back and wrested from not playing those two

3:00:38 > 3:00:43games. Darren Burgess is back and refreshed. You don't eat into those

3:00:43 > 3:00:49games. If you look at the side and you look at the squad, there is a

3:00:49 > 3:00:53side and a squad capable of winning a World Cup and they know that.

3:00:53 > 3:00:58Darren Burgess was big today. His big everyday. He is a big man. He

3:00:58 > 3:01:02was fantastic. Carried the ball strongly and got England going

3:01:02 > 3:01:05forward. Came up with a big hit as well to the gate at an's

3:01:05 > 3:01:11performance.Safe trip to those of you flying out. Will talk to you

3:01:11 > 3:01:18later. Let's end with a positive tweet. Stephen says this is

3:01:18 > 3:01:22potentially the best England site we have produced with some world-class

3:01:22 > 3:01:25players. All teams make errors, including the Australians. Not many

3:01:25 > 3:01:30errors in defence, however. We can do this. Thank you to John and

3:01:30 > 3:01:33Jonathan. Is safe trip and we will see you next Saturday morning for

3:01:33 > 3:01:35the semifinal, England March on.
