:00:31. > :00:36.A warm welcome to Melrose, home of rugby sevens. It was back in 1883

:00:37. > :00:40.that the first game of sevens happened right here in this town.

:00:41. > :00:45.Since then the sport has developed into a worldwide phenomenon and this

:00:46. > :00:50.year it will make it all in big debut. We are here this afternoon

:00:51. > :00:52.for five hours of live sevens rugby and if it is anything like last year

:00:53. > :01:12.we are in for a treat. Oh my goodness me. It is all

:01:13. > :01:25.Warriors. Great try. Through he goes. Lovely try for Glasgow.

:01:26. > :01:34.Scores a try. He will be a proud man. It has finished with a real

:01:35. > :01:47.display of passion. It is a wonderful day for a game of

:01:48. > :01:51.rugby and the action here got underway at 11:30am, we have

:01:52. > :02:03.completed the first round and this is what you have missed so far.

:02:04. > :03:07.just a reminder of the first-round results so far, Howe of Fife out of

:03:08. > :03:22.the competition, knocked out by Edinburgh Accies.

:03:23. > :03:37.Watsonians won this competition 20 years ago and through to next round.

:03:38. > :03:48.The first match in the second round, Edinburgh Accies ahead against Ayr.

:03:49. > :03:51.They won 33-17, coming back from being down, fantastic match, great

:03:52. > :03:59.performance, disappointment for a very young Ayr team. Good to have

:04:00. > :04:05.you with us, the weather is sensational. Fantastic day for

:04:06. > :04:08.rugby. I am joined by the former Scotland sevens coach, the first

:04:09. > :04:14.round already complete, some surprises as well? Yes, great to see

:04:15. > :04:22.Marr coming and getting a victory, it will be intriguing to see how the

:04:23. > :04:27.Invitational teams get on. They knocked out Stirling County, they

:04:28. > :04:30.have never done particularly well here but some invitational sides

:04:31. > :04:34.that we will talk about during the course of the afternoon but you know

:04:35. > :04:37.how important this competition is for Southern truck bid, you played

:04:38. > :04:44.around the world as a coach and this is where it comes from. This is by

:04:45. > :04:49.far the best club tournament in the world and it's great to be here,

:04:50. > :04:54.sunshine and a wonderful atmosphere. The rugby does not stop here, you

:04:55. > :05:02.will see it all on BBC Two Scotland and the next match is Boroughmuir

:05:03. > :05:10.against Gala. COMMENTATOR: Gala to the left of the picture, 0-0 in the

:05:11. > :05:15.opening seconds. Lovely conditions. It's perfect for southern side

:05:16. > :05:18.rugby. Some of the tries you have seen in the build-up to the

:05:19. > :05:26.afternoon showed how easy it is for teams to get a good footing on this

:05:27. > :05:33.task. Doddie Weir is alongside me resplendent in multiple colours of

:05:34. > :05:37.tartan and it's been great so far. Yes, some great sevens played so

:05:38. > :05:42.far, great weather not only for the players but the spectators as well.

:05:43. > :05:47.There we go, looking splendid, shirt and tie and everything. Setting the

:05:48. > :05:56.standard. And setting the standard on the field, some great play. The

:05:57. > :06:02.pictures been a bit damp. -- the pitch has been. We have seen people

:06:03. > :06:12.slipping when trying to sidestep. Look at this, the opener for Gala.

:06:13. > :06:19.The assistant referee keeps the flag down, does that everyone forward? He

:06:20. > :06:27.does but the try is given. That is the opener in this tie which is the

:06:28. > :06:33.second of Round 2. Width on the ball, Graham Spiers, you can see how

:06:34. > :06:44.in today's game, you also have an end goal referee who awarded the

:06:45. > :06:51.try. All the conversions attempts in sevens are from the drop-kick. Would

:06:52. > :06:56.you believe it, he has got it, what a wonderful touchline conversion.

:06:57. > :07:04.His father would have been proud of that. I think a lot of people would

:07:05. > :07:08.have been proud of that, a fantastic effort right from the touchline. Two

:07:09. > :07:14.points could be valuable at the end of this game. Gala get it underway

:07:15. > :07:25.again. Lovely cake by Andie Rose for Boroughmuir. -- lovely cake. Picked

:07:26. > :07:35.up by Walker. Trying to bustle his way through. Comes out along the

:07:36. > :07:42.line. He has the flyer outside him on his left, right. That is Gavin

:07:43. > :07:51.Welsh. But they are going the other way. Giving the ball lots of space,

:07:52. > :07:56.back to Andie Rose. Playing from one side to the other at the moment,

:07:57. > :08:01.going from one standard to the temporary stand, just to try and

:08:02. > :08:09.find some space. Plenty of space, that's the sort of thing that can

:08:10. > :08:13.frustrate the players. The knock-on. He will be frustrated because it's

:08:14. > :08:21.hard enough to win the ball without giving it away with an easy knock-on

:08:22. > :08:31.like that. Big tall lad, the perfect athletic build for southern aside

:08:32. > :08:41.rugby. The Grand National, might be heavy going and it looks heavy going

:08:42. > :08:47.out here. Here come Gala, another flyer on the field, Craig Robertson.

:08:48. > :08:57.Ewan Scott. Sidestep, look at the exhilaration, and a lovely little

:08:58. > :09:02.step of the right and followed by that on the left, hand off like a

:09:03. > :09:11.boxer 's punch and he goes over for the second try. Delight on his face,

:09:12. > :09:16.he used to play rugby for Jedburgh before coming to play for

:09:17. > :09:25.Galashiels. Watch the build-up to this again. You would think, nice

:09:26. > :09:31.little sidestep, two, lovely quick of foot, making it difficult for the

:09:32. > :09:35.opposition to tackle. You have to make the first line tackles, if you

:09:36. > :09:39.don't that is what happens. Well done Ewan Scott. He's quite a big

:09:40. > :09:50.chap, did well under the posts. The most perfect setting for

:09:51. > :09:57.southern aside rugby, the Eildon Hills in the background. I have been

:09:58. > :10:01.up those a few times in my lifetime but not today, the place to be is

:10:02. > :10:11.where the 11,000 are today, seated around the Greenyards in lovely

:10:12. > :10:15.conditions. Interested in seeing how well Gala doing because it's their

:10:16. > :10:18.first game in the competition, and year have already played so you

:10:19. > :10:26.would have thought they would be a bit more together. -- Boroughmuir

:10:27. > :10:33.have already played. Another breakthrough, Steve Cairns. Suddenly

:10:34. > :10:47.taking matters into his own hands and he is off. And there goes the

:10:48. > :10:51.flyer, Gavin Welsh. He has tremendous pace, scored a barrel of

:10:52. > :11:00.tries at the Galashiels sevens last weekend. The crowd enjoying that.

:11:01. > :11:03.That was good play, Galashiels on the front foot but sometimes they

:11:04. > :11:10.have to pass can be quite cruel at times, good play from Boroughmuir.

:11:11. > :11:16.Could have been a food fight to write to the line but Gavin Walsh is

:11:17. > :11:24.a runner, he took the ball and put it right between the posts which

:11:25. > :11:30.makes a very exciting game. 14-7 at the break in favour of Gala. They

:11:31. > :11:34.don't get all that long to take on water but they need it because in

:11:35. > :11:38.these conditions, we are warm in the commentary box but down on the field

:11:39. > :11:44.in the direct sunshine and all that running around the players will be

:11:45. > :11:46.feeling the heat. Not only that but it's a different game, boys have

:11:47. > :11:51.been playing fifteens most of the season, different fitness required

:11:52. > :11:56.for sevens. You have to get your stamina, your fitness is different

:11:57. > :12:02.to what you have been used to. Looking forward to the little break,

:12:03. > :12:09.try to get as big and as well break as they can. Good crowd already,

:12:10. > :12:17.this is the second game of the second round. Already the people

:12:18. > :12:23.have flooded in, they have come by train, by bus and mortar car, and

:12:24. > :12:29.they have walked of course from the neighbouring villages. Always a

:12:30. > :12:36.great, festive party feeling to this competition. It is the blue-ribbon

:12:37. > :12:40.event on the Scottish circuit. The Melrose medal is the one that all

:12:41. > :12:48.the players covet, the one that they want. The second half under way.

:12:49. > :12:53.Didn't go the ten. They come back for a free kick at halfway and Gala

:12:54. > :13:01.have the advantage of possession and the free kick. Did the right thing,

:13:02. > :13:09.just half a yard of the ten yard line, let it bounce to see that it

:13:10. > :13:12.would go but it didn't. This lad usually plays as a centre at

:13:13. > :13:25.fifteens but is big and broad enough to play as a forward in sevens.

:13:26. > :13:28.Along the lines it goes. Gala playing a bit of cat and mouse,

:13:29. > :13:37.Frankie Robson with the ball, used to play at Kelso but now is with the

:13:38. > :13:50.Galashiels team. Along the line it comes. He has Robertson outside him.

:13:51. > :13:56.Back it comes on the Boroughmuir side, that's a good turnover. Very

:13:57. > :14:01.good turnover, very important as well, have to protect the ball going

:14:02. > :14:08.into the tackle. Boroughmuir have to watch. Frankie Robson was tackled

:14:09. > :14:12.and released the ball but played it before getting back on his feet

:14:13. > :14:22.which is why the penalty has been awarded. Sam Johnson for

:14:23. > :14:31.Boroughmuir. Good bustling running. Up the touchline, infield it goes.

:14:32. > :14:36.Mark Walker, the kick ahead and the chase by Gavin Welsh. He has to be

:14:37. > :14:46.careful not to overdo it, that's the pick-up and in he goes. Second try

:14:47. > :14:50.for Boroughmuir. Well worked try, against the run of play again.

:14:51. > :14:53.They've not had the ball all that often in attack but when they do

:14:54. > :14:57.that is the man you don't want having the ball in front of him.

:14:58. > :15:02.Good bit of footballing skill as well. Just a little pick-up, one of

:15:03. > :15:10.his easier tries because Gala didn't quite chase it down. Boroughmuir,

:15:11. > :15:15.when they have got the space, they make the most of it. The conversion

:15:16. > :15:29.just going to the left side. This is the little tap, it is

:15:30. > :15:34.control that is needed, picking up the ball as he was rolling away from

:15:35. > :15:37.him, it's a very difficult skill and more often than not you will see

:15:38. > :15:48.knock-on is. But he chanced his arm and came good. The little break, the

:15:49. > :16:00.missed tackle by Gala. Gala in possession on the far side. Comes

:16:01. > :16:03.infield, Simon Fairburn. Gala monopolising possession at the

:16:04. > :16:10.moment. Coming out along the line. Parker goes. Parker is strong as you

:16:11. > :16:20.another sprinter. Brought down that time. Boroughmuir need the turnover

:16:21. > :16:26.but they don't have at this time. Along the line it goes, Graham

:16:27. > :16:29.Spiers looking for runners. Not a problem. Sauntering in and touching

:16:30. > :16:49.down. Good strong running. Just had to

:16:50. > :16:59.stroll in. It was all made by the lovely break up the wing. I think I

:17:00. > :17:02.could have scored that one. Not sure if I would have been there in the

:17:03. > :17:08.first place but I could have finished it off for them. Would you

:17:09. > :17:10.like to put on a Galashiels Jersey? As a Hawick man I would have to

:17:11. > :17:28.think about it very long and hard. Almost well caught, almost caught.

:17:29. > :17:37.And the interception by Graham Spiers, he's away again. His second

:17:38. > :17:42.in this game. Galashiels's fourth. Also simple and so annoying for the

:17:43. > :17:46.team giving away the interception. This is a big thing which isn't

:17:47. > :17:50.being done as much as it should be, you have to hustle the ball carrier,

:17:51. > :17:54.get up there and have some contact to put the opposite team under

:17:55. > :18:00.pressure. He's done that exceptionally well, Graham Spiers.

:18:01. > :18:08.He has been the man who has stood out and is working well for Gala.

:18:09. > :18:12.That's the view people have from the main grandstand just on the halfway

:18:13. > :18:19.line, you can see the substitute sitting there and biding their time.

:18:20. > :18:29.Frankie Robson for Galashiels again. Perhaps a slight knock: upon receipt

:18:30. > :18:34.of the kick-off. The referee has been fantastic so far, speaking to

:18:35. > :18:40.the players. Which has been helping the players continue the game, keep

:18:41. > :18:43.the game flowing. Playing quite a bit of advantage which is quite good

:18:44. > :18:50.because you don't want to stop and start play. Into the last minute of

:18:51. > :18:53.play in this game, the Boroughmuir scrum-half running away up the far

:18:54. > :19:04.side but he won't get away from Parker. Parker just had the gas to

:19:05. > :19:17.get there and put in the covering tackle. Gave him the outside, got

:19:18. > :19:24.him right to the touchline, and got the throw. They are allowed to do

:19:25. > :19:29.lifting in the line-out of course. Good ball for Gala, Parker again,

:19:30. > :19:34.Graham Spiers, look at the acceleration! Beautiful running by

:19:35. > :19:38.Graham Spiers. Sam Johnson tries to cut him off in the corner, just a

:19:39. > :19:48.bit late. Another lovely try for Gala. Graham Spiers with yet another

:19:49. > :19:54.try, his third in this game. That's the final whistle. Galashiels the

:19:55. > :19:56.winners over Boroughmuir, comfortable winners in this second

:19:57. > :20:28.round tie, 33-12. You don't get any easy ties here.

:20:29. > :20:31.Very pleased. This tournament is special to most of us involved in

:20:32. > :20:37.Scottish rugby but how important is it for you boarders teams together

:20:38. > :20:39.good show? Massive, I was lucky enough to win this competition as a

:20:40. > :20:55.player. Good luck in the next round. This could be a cracking game. On

:20:56. > :21:03.the left it is Jedburgh, some familiar faces in Fraser Harkness

:21:04. > :21:10.and Gregor Young. Some quick, tall runners, Selkirk on the right who

:21:11. > :21:17.are receiving. What are the tactics? The key starting point is the

:21:18. > :21:21.restart and Selkirk have the ball. Selkirk away already, Ross Nixon was

:21:22. > :21:33.playing well in the earlier round. Keep your eyes out for Wellman, the

:21:34. > :21:40.flyer. He is pointing and ushering, gives it deep to Nixon. In terms of

:21:41. > :21:50.how they have to play the game, is with key? -- width. Yes, Selkirk

:21:51. > :21:53.trying to keep a hold of the ball and look for space and only have

:21:54. > :22:02.created an opportunity on the outside. Good one-handed pass, Nixon

:22:03. > :22:08.again involved. Davis, Marshall, McDougall and Welsh in the Selkirk

:22:09. > :22:14.team. This is one of the young brothers who have plenty of pace.

:22:15. > :22:17.They have three players who have played international sevens in the

:22:18. > :22:21.Jedburgh team but if you don't have the ball it's very difficult and

:22:22. > :22:28.Selkirk have had the monopoly in the first minute and a half. It's one of

:22:29. > :22:36.the most beautiful settings. Nice little pass, backhanded flip. No

:22:37. > :22:47.corn, got the ball to Marshall but it will be a scrum -- knock-on. The

:22:48. > :22:51.scrum will be important, Selkirk have played a tie in the first round

:22:52. > :23:01.so Jedburgh will be looking to set the tone. Just to give you an idea

:23:02. > :23:07.of some of the teams coming up, a French Invitational team and the

:23:08. > :23:14.Belgian national team who are pretty impressive. Some great sevens stars.

:23:15. > :23:19.Harkness comes here every year, Fraser Harkness, everything about

:23:20. > :23:26.him shout that maybe he should be able to do what he is able to do but

:23:27. > :23:31.he's an incredible sevens players. Very good patience by Jedburgh, went

:23:32. > :23:37.wide of the scrum and Fraser identified the space. He is

:23:38. > :23:48.deceptively quick with a very good rugby brain.

:23:49. > :23:55.This was a cracking try, tells you everything you need to know about

:23:56. > :24:00.how to play the game. And look at this crowd, 11,000 people, a

:24:01. > :24:04.beautiful spring day, are happy and contented crowd. They came here by

:24:05. > :24:09.train, they have driven down from all over the country to be here to

:24:10. > :24:17.watch one of the great sporting events in this country of ours.

:24:18. > :24:24.The referee picking Jedburgh up for not releasing the tackled player and

:24:25. > :24:30.Selkirk looking to try and play quickly.

:24:31. > :24:46.Good break by McDougall. Stays strong. Selkirk, we noticed early

:24:47. > :24:54.on, Selkirk have good technique at the breakdown. Little break by Mikey

:24:55. > :24:59.Davies but he was cornered. We have seen Welsh stride out in the first

:25:00. > :25:05.round. Interesting that the now at this stage don't play again for

:25:06. > :25:10.another two hours. Yes, it's a long break so they know they can give it

:25:11. > :25:18.their all for 40 minutes, it's the recovery strategy afterwards.

:25:19. > :25:27.Wellman smashed by Tywyn. Again the Selkirk technique over the ball. --

:25:28. > :25:33.by Tywyn. John Welsh is collared and the fitness of Jedburgh looks good.

:25:34. > :25:39.The ball squirted the back. The exhaustion starts to creep in. The

:25:40. > :25:44.outside channel, play between the 15 metre line and the touchline on both

:25:45. > :25:49.sides, that is critical. The team that can get numbers there, what

:25:50. > :25:50.Jedburgh dead was applying pressure at the break and Selkirk could not

:25:51. > :26:04.numbers there. Selkirk against Jedburgh, Jedburgh

:26:05. > :26:15.in the light blue on the left. Lots of gas in this Jedburgh team if they

:26:16. > :26:19.can get the ball to them. Harkness. Another penalty. Harkness could see

:26:20. > :26:22.an opportunity, he has Reddy scored one try, exit long. -- he has

:26:23. > :26:42.already. -- kick it long. Wellman, the quick man, but he's not

:26:43. > :26:44.had much space. Jedburgh have marshalled him very well, they will

:26:45. > :26:51.know each other from playing last weekend at Gala. An international

:26:52. > :26:58.sevens team would be very wide that when a club team gets tired they are

:26:59. > :27:00.quite narrow. The speed of organisation is very intense and

:27:01. > :27:16.both teams feeling the effects of the heat. Lewis Young, we know they

:27:17. > :27:25.can run. Up against the Selkirk fast man but he has man and ball, it is

:27:26. > :27:31.all so unless he can get it to the ground it will be a scrum to

:27:32. > :27:34.Jedburgh. Identified Selkirk didn't have a sweeper, quite often teams

:27:35. > :27:38.will play with six on the front line defence and a sweeper in behind and

:27:39. > :27:43.he recognised the sweeper was not there and put a kick in, but to be

:27:44. > :27:49.fair Wellman did well to get back on the ball. But a turnover opportunity

:27:50. > :27:55.and a scrum for Jedburgh. No identification of anybody at home,

:27:56. > :27:58.but the good try by Chisholm. Jedburgh score their second. Ian

:27:59. > :28:07.Chisholm profiting from some loose ball. That was a great score.

:28:08. > :28:15.Straight from the scrum, picking up and going through. If we go back to

:28:16. > :28:20.the kick from Lewis Young, the vision and understanding of the

:28:21. > :28:23.space in the game. This space can be through the middle, around the

:28:24. > :28:27.outside or in behind and that opportunity it was in behind.

:28:28. > :28:31.Unfortunately I missed conversion. It's a good game, Jedburgh are

:28:32. > :28:51.dominating. Half-time. Let's join Hello. I heard you saying on BBC

:28:52. > :28:55.radio Scotland that playing in the Melrose Sevens was on your bucket

:28:56. > :29:01.list so you must be pleased to be here. The crowd are amazing, the

:29:02. > :29:04.weather is nice as well and the turnout for a one-day tournament of

:29:05. > :29:09.Rugby sevens is unbelievable. I think we will give it our best to

:29:10. > :29:13.give the people who came for the show a good game. The German

:29:14. > :29:18.national team came here last year and surprised a lot of people by

:29:19. > :29:26.going all the way to the final. Had you got similar targets for the June

:29:27. > :29:30.team? From the beginning we played a second division team so we grew

:29:31. > :29:35.together and last year we beat them very narrowly in the European

:29:36. > :29:39.Championship and we know they are a big quality side, so we tried to do

:29:40. > :29:44.even better and get as far as they have. As you can see, the quality on

:29:45. > :29:49.the pitch here is really good so it will be a tough competition.

:29:50. > :29:54.Aberdeen first up, best of luck in the tournament.

:29:55. > :30:00.Thank you. That was the Belgian captain talking to Andy Burke. Steve

:30:01. > :30:05.Gemmell, you have watched some of these Belgians played before. Let's

:30:06. > :30:11.just watch this. This could be a try for Selkirk. They have Mikey Davis

:30:12. > :30:21.on the ball now. Out to Nixon. Out to Wellman. A nice cut to Hendry.

:30:22. > :30:29.Young on his own try line. A knock-on. This could be a hand in.

:30:30. > :30:35.What an unlucky gesture. Josh Welsh takes the advantage of that little

:30:36. > :30:40.sloppy knock-on. That came from the restart. A wonderful restart, just

:30:41. > :30:46.onto the ten metre line for Selkirk, gave them the possession and came

:30:47. > :30:50.wide in the wide channel. Jed managed to get it back and then

:30:51. > :30:57.unfortunately an error at this level and this type of game is punished.

:30:58. > :31:03.We have seen some incredible tries already, I think we have seen some

:31:04. > :31:07.great tries. What happens here? Craig Cowan looks up and just

:31:08. > :31:13.spilled the ball. You look up and think you have 95 metres to run and

:31:14. > :31:19.that adds pressure. He lifted his head and dropped the ball,

:31:20. > :31:23.unfortunately. Tell us about the restart. What is happening? What you

:31:24. > :31:29.have got to do is give your attacking players the chance if

:31:30. > :31:35.there is height on the ball, it gives your team the chance to get

:31:36. > :31:42.under it and win the ball back. Possession in sevens is critical.

:31:43. > :31:46.Lots of good pressure from Selkirk. Selkirk have been good at breakdown.

:31:47. > :31:52.All these Jed bodies around the ball. It will be a penalty to Jed.

:31:53. > :31:59.They need to get the youngs and Harkness on the ball. It took Jed a

:32:00. > :32:06.while to get up from the ground. It was Chisholm I think when that ball

:32:07. > :32:09.in. This will be a try. It is indeed. As many as are of the

:32:10. > :32:12.opinion, say "aye". To the contrary, "no". I think it was Robert Hawke

:32:13. > :32:15.who came in on that line. You see the speed of the game that Jed from

:32:16. > :32:16.that quick penalty wanted to play the ball quickly, brought it back to

:32:17. > :32:35.the mark and the referee. Chisholm was not going to be caught.

:32:36. > :32:41.There is Jed extending their lead. They look pretty comfortable. I

:32:42. > :32:44.think he is feeling the heat. Believe me, John, you never feel

:32:45. > :32:50.comfortable with only a 14 point lead. At the moment, Jed seemed to

:32:51. > :32:56.be maximising the opportunities they have with the ball. Selkirk, to be

:32:57. > :33:01.fair, had some possession but have not been able to turn it into

:33:02. > :33:06.points. A great afternoon's rugby in prospect. That is another mistake

:33:07. > :33:12.were it does not make the ten metres line. That will be punished. Gives a

:33:13. > :33:33.free kick in the centre. Nixon, pointing and cajoling. To

:33:34. > :33:39.Robertson. Robertson to Davies. Knocked down deliberately says the

:33:40. > :33:50.referee. Our apologies if you were lip-reading earlier on. Apologies if

:33:51. > :33:57.you were offended. It was going to be called back for the knock-on.

:33:58. > :34:02.Stevie, what is interesting here is that Jed are having to work for the

:34:03. > :34:10.tries, aren't they? A lot of what they are doing is from their own 22.

:34:11. > :34:19.They have some players, the two Youngs. Davies seems to be the

:34:20. > :34:31.playmaker. Everything is going through Mikey Davies. A tackle by

:34:32. > :34:35.Young. It will be a Scrum V. That his white line fever we often talk

:34:36. > :34:40.about in rugby where probably one pass would have been a guaranteed

:34:41. > :34:48.score. Good defence to hold them up there by Mr Young again. Ross Cohen

:34:49. > :34:52.was coming round the defence. It could have been a try. Good

:34:53. > :35:03.snaffling. Harkness is on the ground as well. How tiring is sevens?

:35:04. > :35:09.Extremely tiring. This is a critical stage. Two minutes to go. Selkirk

:35:10. > :35:19.know they will have a chance to get the ball back.

:35:20. > :35:27.Selkirk still on the attack. Lots of little mistakes. Wellman just spins

:35:28. > :35:39.round. It might be too little, too late. A good try. Yes, it was an

:35:40. > :35:45.excellent try. Well worked from the penalty. A simple pass, good finish.

:35:46. > :35:50.You would think Selkirk need to be rushing to take this kick. Even if

:35:51. > :35:57.they get this, they need a converted score. Unfortunately, that dropped

:35:58. > :36:07.shot. Very difficult now. A minute to go. A two score game. We are into

:36:08. > :36:14.the last minute. It has been a really good game this one. That was

:36:15. > :36:21.another mistake. Harkness, I think one of the great playmakers. Young

:36:22. > :36:26.just steps on the gas. This is the stride length of genuine talent,

:36:27. > :36:29.Lewis Young, followed in by his brother Greg Young, who is the

:36:30. > :36:40.captain and Young with that vital score. They chose not to go to the

:36:41. > :36:49.kick-off and it went straight into the hands of Lewis Young. There is

:36:50. > :36:54.the final score. A good game. Just to remind you the time in the top

:36:55. > :36:59.left-hand corner is our time but the referee has his own time so we are

:37:00. > :37:04.playing by that time. We are going to get some great games later on.

:37:05. > :37:10.Let's join Andy Burke again. Thank you. I have got the Jed head

:37:11. > :37:22.coach with me now. Are you happy with what you saw? It was a good

:37:23. > :37:28.win. They are tough to beat. We were scoring tries. Have you set your

:37:29. > :37:32.side any targets about how far they can go? We want to go all the way.

:37:33. > :37:46.We are not just here to make up the numbers. Best of luck.

:37:47. > :37:53.Out in the middle of the field is today's referee for this tie. To the

:37:54. > :38:00.left of the picture, Belgium, the visitors. To the right, Aberdeen. I

:38:01. > :38:07.think we are in for an exciting game here. We had Belgium beat Germany

:38:08. > :38:12.who got to the final last year. Aberdeen in the first round beat

:38:13. > :38:15.Glasgow Hawks. Both teams can play and looking forward to this type,

:38:16. > :38:22.especially the guest side of Belgium. This is a very good start

:38:23. > :38:32.here by the Belgians. Lovely running. It is a tribe for the big

:38:33. > :38:37.man. The big lad with the beard. He is away over six foot seven. Look at

:38:38. > :38:44.him, you would never think he was the kind of person to play sevens.

:38:45. > :38:58.That is the type of try you used to like dodgy. It was by distance. --

:38:59. > :39:08.Doddie. Here's the ball extremely well. So far, within a minute, which

:39:09. > :39:14.is quite interesting because the players don't have a clock so they

:39:15. > :39:21.don't know how many minutes have played but we do. Clever players may

:39:22. > :39:26.be able to see the clock on the old stand. This is the first of the

:39:27. > :39:31.foreign guest sides we have seen. This is Belgium in the yellow, black

:39:32. > :39:33.and red of their national colours. And Aberdeen on the right of your

:39:34. > :39:44.screen. The big fellow Verscelden is a

:39:45. > :40:12.handful. The referee says you cannot do that,

:40:13. > :40:25.that is a penalty. Aberdeen on the attack.

:40:26. > :40:30.I spoke to referees beforehand, I still don't understand the Lawes.

:40:31. > :40:34.What the referees are doing very well if they are explaining that

:40:35. > :40:39.quite well but that was not going back ten yards. You have had a

:40:40. > :40:51.lifetime of not understanding the law Ayes of rugby, Doddie! -- the

:40:52. > :40:59.laws. If you play well you could put yourself... Look at them go for the

:41:00. > :41:09.corner. That is a SuperDrive. That levels it. It is 5-5. Delighted with

:41:10. > :41:19.his effort. -- a superb try. Weighing up the options. When you

:41:20. > :41:27.get out of that straight line, you do sometimes create a space. A good

:41:28. > :41:31.effort there. That made the drop kick over the post a lot trickier

:41:32. > :41:37.but you could see the referee with his flag in the air which is a

:41:38. > :41:43.tremendous notch for an extra two points. Alex Haggart with the

:41:44. > :41:48.conversion so to 7- 04 Aberdeen Rugby. What a good start for them.

:41:49. > :41:54.The clock at the top will give you an indication roughly of where we

:41:55. > :42:00.are in the game. There is a chance here for the Belgians. I watched

:42:01. > :42:03.them training yesterday and again, I thought they were very good handlers

:42:04. > :42:08.of the ball but I have not seen them in contact until now. They are still

:42:09. > :42:12.going to have their handling skills but they still have to accomplish

:42:13. > :42:19.that when they are fatigued. Very much, Bill. Belgian caught the ball

:42:20. > :42:24.from the kick-off. Aberdeen anticipated that would pass. Belgium

:42:25. > :42:29.took it on but forward past. Good play here stop a lovely run around.

:42:30. > :42:37.A chance here. That was a good try for Belgium.

:42:38. > :42:52.Good team work there. That could easily have gone the

:42:53. > :42:56.other way. That could easily have been an intercept. That is how

:42:57. > :43:06.exciting the game is. A lovely try there.

:43:07. > :43:14.Mr conversion there, two points on this. That could be vital at the end

:43:15. > :43:30.of this game because Aberdeen are playing well.

:43:31. > :43:36.Well taken there by Aberdeen. One of these we study forwards at the

:43:37. > :44:01.middle of it. There was a knock-on by Aberdeen

:44:02. > :44:09.there. Number three puts his team under a little bit of pressure. You

:44:10. > :44:20.don't really want to throw the ball high in the air. The Belgian team is

:44:21. > :44:26.coached by Nicholas LaRue who used to play seven asides for France. He

:44:27. > :45:03.is a Frenchman. He played for Stade Francais in his 15 aside days.

:45:04. > :45:11.The captain just did that little dummy as if he was going to do a

:45:12. > :45:17.little step. It made the defence checked and allowed Loic Lechlen to

:45:18. > :45:23.go right in the corner. So half time here at the Greenyards. Here we are,

:45:24. > :45:26.tie number four in the second round. We are gradually working our way

:45:27. > :45:32.through to the real business end of the competition. There are the

:45:33. > :45:39.Belgians, and that man Loic Lechlen, he has done some good running. Here

:45:40. > :45:51.is one of his tries. See that little dummy. That allowed Loic Lechlen to

:45:52. > :45:57.run into the corner which I think even you could do, Bill. What I

:45:58. > :46:03.think is exciting is the way that the Belgians are looking quite good.

:46:04. > :46:12.They are not bad. I thought they might have some more pace about

:46:13. > :46:18.them. They are leading. Big Alex Hagood in the middle. He is giving

:46:19. > :46:27.his team words of wisdom and setting out the pattern for the next seven

:46:28. > :46:29.minutes half of rugby. The next 7.5 minutes of rugby determines whether

:46:30. > :46:47.they go into the quarterfinals or not. And that big culture and player

:46:48. > :46:56.Mathieu Verschelden, he scored their first try -- that take lad. Here

:46:57. > :47:05.they go, bringing it to the side. A little change of tactics.

:47:06. > :47:25.It is interesting in this line-out you have the little man being

:47:26. > :47:44.lifted. This lad is a leading runner. He is

:47:45. > :47:51.not the fastest but I think he is difficult get hold of.

:47:52. > :48:05.Another try for the visitors. There is a smile on the face of the

:48:06. > :48:09.foreigners. They have got their second breath and they are enjoying

:48:10. > :48:16.Melrose Sevens. They certainly are and they are enjoying sevens rugby

:48:17. > :48:20.as well. It is all about support. Coupe, with a name like that, you

:48:21. > :48:26.would expect him to be running very fast. I think we will see a lot more

:48:27. > :48:33.from him in the later ties. We are a minute and a half into the second

:48:34. > :48:37.period of play. 22.2 seven. Belgium are leading Aberdeen. They have

:48:38. > :48:45.worked very hard for it, this Belgian side. Aberdeen have

:48:46. > :48:48.travelled a long way. How did they get on in that first type? They beat

:48:49. > :48:50.Glasgow Hawks in their opening tie this afternoon. They have not gone

:48:51. > :49:02.away entirely empty-handed. A chance here for Mathieu

:49:03. > :49:09.Verschelden. The big lad is away again. Vincent heart is in at the

:49:10. > :49:16.corner. Yet another try for the visitors. They show their faces now

:49:17. > :49:17.as they put their game together. Vincent heart. They make it look

:49:18. > :49:34.quite easy at the moment. Still a bit to do. Come on, Doddie,

:49:35. > :49:44.tell me about great sidesteps you did in your career. I don't think

:49:45. > :49:48.there is any footage of that, Bill. We talk about sidesteps as well but

:49:49. > :49:53.another thing we saw today which is nice to see if a player of today

:49:54. > :49:59.carrying a ball in two hands. In our day it was one hand round the back.

:50:00. > :50:03.You can see the captain just behind the ball at the kick-offs, he is

:50:04. > :50:07.giving some kind of signal to his players, and it is working

:50:08. > :50:13.exceedingly well. They have won the ball back again. Here is this big

:50:14. > :50:21.strong runner going through now. That is another great try. He is

:50:22. > :50:27.another one of these Belgians who can run a bit and he is strong with

:50:28. > :50:33.it. No messing around when he gets a sniff of the whitewash, as they say.

:50:34. > :50:37.He is strong, Bill, because he is allowed to be strong. Aberdeen are

:50:38. > :50:42.not making their tackles at the moment. If you do not make tackles,

:50:43. > :50:48.you will be punished. The scoreline tells that tale. You can see it was

:50:49. > :50:57.well competed, not offside. The ball is forward there. One missed tackle,

:50:58. > :51:04.no support, no runner behind. It is a different type of kick-off. A low

:51:05. > :51:12.bouncing kick-off. They have to come back and Aberdeen have the restart

:51:13. > :51:28.and away they go. What a good piece of running here stop they have got

:51:29. > :51:34.the try. That is just reward for a fabulous individual effort. That is

:51:35. > :51:42.worth seeing again. He is certainly the man of Aberdeen at the moment.

:51:43. > :51:46.He was going forward and forward. He had the whole of Belgium on his back

:51:47. > :51:51.at one stage but still managed to roll over. Nothing on here. No

:51:52. > :51:56.support around the bottom. Just himself and the Belgian team in

:51:57. > :52:03.front. A great bit of sidestep and shimmy. You can see how he transfers

:52:04. > :52:08.the ball from left to right hand. A magnificent try. There we are, the

:52:09. > :52:15.man of the moment, Jollands with that lovely try. The Belgian side

:52:16. > :52:21.are well ahead. The thing about sevens is you do not get any VAT

:52:22. > :52:28.replay which is why there is a touch judge to give the nod. He must have

:52:29. > :52:46.been happy with that. -- the key replay.

:52:47. > :52:54.The Belgians swamped that area. Another component of sevens, you

:52:55. > :53:00.have got to be a bit quicker on the ball. Aberdeen are a bit sluggish.

:53:01. > :53:05.The referee is smiling away in the middle but he does not have to do

:53:06. > :53:09.the running and tackling. I think he is showing off a little bit as well

:53:10. > :53:15.because I think he is speaking French did the Belgians which is a

:53:16. > :53:22.nice touch. Back infield it goes, Redmond with the ball, a great

:53:23. > :53:27.tackle there. Aberdeen playing some nice rugby when they get half a

:53:28. > :53:37.chance. When out on that far touchline, spreading the ball.

:53:38. > :53:41.Gilmore on the deck. There is the referee's Whistle indicating

:53:42. > :53:46.full-time in this tie. It is a comfy win in the end for Belgium. They

:53:47. > :53:53.have beaten Aberdeen. There is the scoreline on your screen. The

:53:54. > :53:59.referee just congratulating the players on their efforts and wishing

:54:00. > :54:05.them well for the next round. Belgium go through and they will

:54:06. > :54:12.meet Jed in the second quarterfinal. Yes, an excellent start. I am joined

:54:13. > :54:17.by one of their players. You must be pleased with how your team

:54:18. > :54:21.performed? It was very tough. It was an aim to get into this match and

:54:22. > :54:25.feel the atmosphere here in Aberdeen for the first tournament in Melrose

:54:26. > :54:30.so we are really happy. Tell me what it means for you and your Belgian

:54:31. > :54:36.team-mates to be here as part of this historic tournament? It is a

:54:37. > :54:39.real privilege to take part here will stop it is really a pleasure

:54:40. > :54:50.for us. Best of luck for the next round.

:54:51. > :54:59.Another of the invitation or sides now, it is the French up against the

:55:00. > :55:02.Watsonians. French peripatetic players. Many of them not sevens

:55:03. > :55:16.players, playing for clubs. The Watsonians are away

:55:17. > :55:40.straightaway. Rory steel keeps it alive to

:55:41. > :55:46.Ferguson. Watsonians no respect of reputation at all. The ball went

:55:47. > :55:53.forward but it will be offside said Mr Dickson, and that was a good way

:55:54. > :56:07.to start. Absolutely. Difficult for the French guest team. Bertram just

:56:08. > :56:12.ashes his way through to pretty ineffective French tackles, it has

:56:13. > :56:17.to be said. He just crashes across the line. Mark Bertram with the

:56:18. > :56:22.first try for Watsonians. They won last weekend and did not expect to

:56:23. > :56:26.make it look this easy. It is always difficult when you are dealing with

:56:27. > :56:30.a French team, whether it is the French national team or these

:56:31. > :56:36.invitational teams. The games suit how they play with 15th but it does

:56:37. > :56:44.not always transfer. Here is the try coming in. Bertram easily broke

:56:45. > :56:52.through two tackles and under the post. Conversion means it is 7-0

:56:53. > :56:54.now. OK, Drummond, Miller and Bertram

:56:55. > :57:13.already had an impact. A hard tackle by Rory Drummond.

:57:14. > :57:21.Seventise, let's see what they are made of. Lambert has it back.

:57:22. > :57:33.The French will have to be stung into some kind of action.

:57:34. > :57:36.Interesting when you saw the defence of Watsonians, because there was no

:57:37. > :57:40.contact area, some of the players were in the eye line of the French

:57:41. > :57:47.attacking teams, as they look to come back from left to right. The

:57:48. > :57:51.Watsonians players were setting up. That created the opportunity. The

:57:52. > :57:58.French have it. The ex-Stade Francais player passes

:57:59. > :58:23.it. It will be one of these games, it is

:58:24. > :58:26.as usual, you want the big invitational sides to show you

:58:27. > :58:31.something, you don't really want them to win. You want the local lads

:58:32. > :58:36.to beat them. If Watsonians can keep their act together, they have every

:58:37. > :58:40.chance. They are very well coached, with Andrew Kerr, an ex-Scotland

:58:41. > :58:49.sevens player as the manager and the next sevens player as the coach.

:58:50. > :59:03.That will be a scrum to Seventise. We know the first quarterfinal will

:59:04. > :59:10.be Edinburgh Accies against... This is one of the treats for the eye.

:59:11. > :59:16.Look at the TV spectators have in this competition which has been

:59:17. > :59:19.going in from 1883. It was this brand of sevens invented purely to

:59:20. > :59:22.make some money back in the olden days but it has been one of the

:59:23. > :59:30.great exports from this part of the world.

:59:31. > :59:37.that was almost man and ball but Watsonians showing a lot of patience

:59:38. > :59:43.building in their own 22. Nice step. The French seem to have upped their

:59:44. > :59:53.game, Davidson is collared, helped back by Ewan Miller. Keeping the

:59:54. > :59:59.ball alive. Bit more pressure. That was going backwards but the break is

:00:00. > :00:08.on. Drummond in support. Not enough people helping as Rory Steele it

:00:09. > :00:15.was, but he's earned a penalty which will be taken quickly by Ewan

:00:16. > :00:22.Miller. The ball into backhands. -- in two hands. Some of these tackles

:00:23. > :00:34.are close enough is good enough I think. Davidson. Does his best. Four

:00:35. > :00:41.against two if they keep their heads together. He has already scored a

:00:42. > :00:48.try, beyond one man, big handoff and that is the second. Against all

:00:49. > :00:55.expectations, taking on the glamour team from France. What you are

:00:56. > :01:02.seeing is a well-organised team, Watsonians playing as a team. He

:01:03. > :01:07.takes off, has a go at the sweeper, good handoff, dummy to create enough

:01:08. > :01:13.space and the final handoff to get over the line. Good individual

:01:14. > :01:16.finish but a team try. Had the patience to keep the ball under

:01:17. > :01:20.pressure in their own 22 and eventually gone the length of the

:01:21. > :01:27.field to get the score. At the moment it is advantage Watsonians.

:01:28. > :01:35.On the field, Parker was called up to the Scottish development squad I

:01:36. > :01:38.remember Keith Robertson telling me that pre-season training at Melrose

:01:39. > :01:46.was runner-up that hell, head left, run up the other one come back down.

:01:47. > :01:53.This view is stunning. -- run up that Hill. You can see how it

:01:54. > :02:00.nestles in such a beautiful location, this ground. Has a handoff

:02:01. > :02:07.like a piledriver, little forward pass and it is half-time. This is a

:02:08. > :02:14.game that Watsonians who won last week are dominating. You can see the

:02:15. > :02:22.invitational team have come together as an invitational team and are

:02:23. > :02:32.playing more as individuals. Watsonians are seeing this as a real

:02:33. > :02:40.focus, two, to Melrose and try to win the title -- to come to Melrose

:02:41. > :02:50.to try to win the title. These are the tries. Bertram with his fast,

:02:51. > :02:54.going through, no, this is the second, handoff on one, handoff on

:02:55. > :03:00.the second, keeps the ball alive and goes over the line. People watching,

:03:01. > :03:08.you are the former coach, what is the general tactic, is it about

:03:09. > :03:11.getting wide to wide? Watsonians are playing what I would call a

:03:12. > :03:16.traditional game of sevens, stretching the opposition, when they

:03:17. > :03:21.go into the wide channel they have got a runner coming short, trying to

:03:22. > :03:25.drag in an extra defender, if the defender doesn't come they will put

:03:26. > :03:31.a player through the space. If the defender does come they will pull it

:03:32. > :03:38.out and play the other way. Watsonians playing the traditional

:03:39. > :03:45.brand. We should say hello to all the youngsters from Ballymena rugby

:03:46. > :03:49.club, got to meet them in the hotel last night. What a break this is,

:03:50. > :03:58.Drummond all the way through. I cannot believe that try. Actually it

:03:59. > :04:05.was Scott McKee, went left-to-right -- Scott McLean. It came from the

:04:06. > :04:14.restart, Watsonians kicking off and winning the ball, came out to McKean

:04:15. > :04:17.who backed himself. To be fair it was a poor tackle by the French

:04:18. > :04:28.defender but the great finish by McKean. Unfortunately conversion

:04:29. > :04:33.drops to the right-hand side. We should not say this, but the

:04:34. > :04:39.tackling has been poor, the French tackling, you want to put somebody

:04:40. > :04:42.on the ground if they are attacking. France are renowned for the ball in

:04:43. > :04:46.hand and having the player, you would think sevens would suit them

:04:47. > :04:51.but 50% of the game is defending and they don't look keen to be doing

:04:52. > :05:01.that. This could be the first try by the French team. Gavin Parker, from

:05:02. > :05:09.Exeter, did well to take it up that right-hand side. You feel the

:05:10. > :05:18.French, for the sake of pride, have to get back into this match. Long

:05:19. > :05:26.ball. Just held up. Quick ball. Could this be a run in? Fraser,

:05:27. > :05:29.there is the try. Cambridge University, playing for the French

:05:30. > :05:34.invitational team, gives them a little bit of pride. It was a good

:05:35. > :05:46.take by Gavin Parker down the right-hand side, good defence by

:05:47. > :05:51.Watsonians. Managed to score that try, now it's interesting, 17-7 with

:05:52. > :05:57.five minutes to go, if the French team score next it's all to play

:05:58. > :06:02.for. Went out to the left, tackle, held up, manage to get the ball

:06:03. > :06:10.back, good ruck, comes to Fraser, the little outside break. In between

:06:11. > :06:15.two bodies. For in a half minutes left and the kick-off, you can hear

:06:16. > :06:29.his team-mates not happy. It's the Watsonians Dolly -- tap. Has handed

:06:30. > :06:37.the momentum straight back to Watsonians. Seventise On the

:06:38. > :06:52.ascendancy with the score, the restart but it go straight out.

:06:53. > :07:11.Fraser comes off, the try scorer. Watsonians. Too slow.

:07:12. > :07:28.Not happy. This is the chance for revenge, the big man who thinks he's

:07:29. > :07:31.just been punched. Ways it off. Some or urgency, I think the French

:07:32. > :07:40.thought this would be easier than it is.

:07:41. > :07:48.He's isolated. This could be trouble. It will be a penalty. You

:07:49. > :07:53.have spoken about this a lot, if you go into contact by yourself you are

:07:54. > :08:03.going to get turned over. Yes, we spoken about it before, it's

:08:04. > :08:06.invitational team, Seventise. Here Watsonians are well organised bids

:08:07. > :08:13.were and putting them under pressure and the French are struggling to

:08:14. > :08:27.deal with it -- well-organised defensively. Lambert. The number

:08:28. > :08:33.six. Callum Black, of Edinburgh Accies, give it out wide, penning

:08:34. > :08:38.his ears back and if you get under the posts he gives his team a

:08:39. > :08:45.chance. Two minutes left, this will be 17-12, if the conversion goes

:08:46. > :08:52.17-14. They have totally changed their attitude. They have had the

:08:53. > :09:02.ball in hand and looking as though they are now up for the game. Good

:09:03. > :09:05.finish by the big man. Conversion, 17-14, all to play for in the last

:09:06. > :09:12.minute and a half. The kick-off is clinical. Good knee left, could not

:09:13. > :09:21.be caught and put the ball between the posts, vital kick-off now. Too

:09:22. > :09:24.far. Giving the ball straight back to Watsonians so they are in

:09:25. > :09:34.complete control. Taking it into the wide channel. Why do you want to

:09:35. > :09:37.play in the wide channel? Because it stretches the defence and it starts

:09:38. > :09:44.to create opportunities, Bertrand coming through on an inside line.

:09:45. > :09:49.Lazy pass away, Watsonians had everything in their grasp. Lambert

:09:50. > :09:56.with the kick and chase, this could be a turn up, gives it away. The

:09:57. > :09:59.French, this could be one of the great turnarounds in Melrose rugby

:10:00. > :10:06.because they looked as though they were a team here relaxing and now

:10:07. > :10:13.they are in the lead. Watsonians contributed to that themselves.

:10:14. > :10:18.Great vision, the kick through and the off-loads and well finished.

:10:19. > :10:24.19-17 with the conversion to follow and probably not enough time for the

:10:25. > :10:27.kick-off. You don't want to be too critical but it was their way

:10:28. > :10:32.Watsonians came out with the ball, they were not aggressive or decisive

:10:33. > :10:35.enough. You either need to go forward or keep hold of possession

:10:36. > :10:42.by backing off. Got caught doing neither and were punished. The game

:10:43. > :10:44.is not over, Watsonians have two win this and keep it. Taken up by Ewan

:10:45. > :11:09.Miller. Rory Steele. Out to Bertram. This is an incredible game.

:11:10. > :11:14.Ewan Miller. Wide channel, to wide channel. Bertram, halfway through,

:11:15. > :11:20.this could be incredible! They thought they were going to lose the

:11:21. > :11:26.game but Watsonians in the dying embers of what has been a bright

:11:27. > :11:32.match have sent the French out, the French superstars going out in the

:11:33. > :11:41.last move of the game. Great finish by Bertram, showed his power, real

:11:42. > :11:45.patience and discipline. Came wide, created the opportunity, back in,

:11:46. > :11:50.have a gap Bertram and he used his strength and power to go through and

:11:51. > :11:57.clinch the winning score. What a game that was and there are more of

:11:58. > :12:07.them to come. Seventise, the French invitational team are out. Let's

:12:08. > :12:13.join Andi Burke track-side. I have representatives of both teams, we

:12:14. > :12:19.will start with the French team manager, must be disappointing? Very

:12:20. > :12:27.cruel, they did a great job in the second half, very disappointed for

:12:28. > :12:31.the boys. Watsonians at a very good team so good luck for them for the

:12:32. > :12:38.rest of the tournament. Contrasting emotions, your boys pulled it out of

:12:39. > :12:42.the bag? We worked hard together, we knew they were going to be a tough

:12:43. > :12:46.opposition, it was about having the belief to work hard for each other.

:12:47. > :12:51.The defence was pretty solid and we got through towards the end luckily.

:12:52. > :13:01.Happy with the result, have to just keep working. Well done.

:13:02. > :13:05.COMMENTATOR: This is the sixth of the eight times in the second round,

:13:06. > :13:33.Melrose, the home side in white. A dropped pass right away.

:13:34. > :13:42.If pieces have gap he likes to have a go. Absolutely, he has got pace,

:13:43. > :13:46.determined to put on a show. Currie have played an earlier game and can

:13:47. > :13:52.use that to their advantage, Melrose coming in a bit cold and have been

:13:53. > :14:02.caught cold at the moment. Great run by big Travis Brody. Not quite

:14:03. > :14:16.making it. Ali Miller, if memory serves me correctly is a Scotland

:14:17. > :14:25.under 20 cap. Bruce Calderwood the throw, the man who calls the song,

:14:26. > :14:31.where he goes, he will have to go, but that was a very good chase back

:14:32. > :14:37.by Carrie. Particularly by Cameron Gray, using all his pace to get back

:14:38. > :14:45.and slow the Melrose attack. Out again along the line. Wild pass at

:14:46. > :14:51.the end, it breaks down when they pass goes slightly off target.

:14:52. > :14:55.Disappointing finish, good break by the Scotland sevens player, did not

:14:56. > :15:02.panic when he got in behind. Retained possession, good recycling,

:15:03. > :15:10.out wide, but unfortunately a poor pass to Ali Miller. Lovely line-out

:15:11. > :15:18.work again by Travis Brody, the big Auckland. Going back to New Zealand

:15:19. > :15:25.next week to continue his life as a police man in the Auckland police

:15:26. > :15:37.service. Lovely footwork. Good covering by Melrose. I have to say

:15:38. > :15:43.the Melrose guys were back very well, trying to get the line

:15:44. > :15:50.organised. Look at the wee man with the sidestep, look at him go. Almost

:15:51. > :15:57.through. Despairing tackle by Bruce Colvin. Good running again by

:15:58. > :16:06.Currie. Here goes big Brody, inside, outside. What a try for Currie.

:16:07. > :16:12.Lovely passing and teamwork in the build-up to the try. Very good

:16:13. > :16:19.patience by Charlie Shiel when the ball came out to that wide channel

:16:20. > :16:24.and he had nowhere to go. I would wide to big Brody, very strong, ball

:16:25. > :16:30.back inside and great support by Harvey elms to pick it up and a

:16:31. > :16:45.great finish. The conversion goes wide.

:16:46. > :16:54.This will be a great memory for him to take back to New Zealand, playing

:16:55. > :17:09.in the Melrose sevens. Melrose have the ball. Beautiful running. Nice

:17:10. > :17:14.stuff. I out to Colvin. Way he goes. Listen to the crowd getting behind

:17:15. > :17:23.the home team. Lovely linking up, Irvin Hess puts the foot down and

:17:24. > :17:34.away he goes. Lovely driver Melrose. -- lovely try for Melrose. Samper

:17:35. > :17:47.the conversion follows. Great finish. Interesting challenge, both

:17:48. > :17:54.of these teams playing fifteens last weekend in the play-offs and trying

:17:55. > :18:01.to transition quickly into sevens. Pace and power to go under the

:18:02. > :18:05.posts. It's the little burst of pace which takes you away from the

:18:06. > :18:09.incoming tackle which is very important. Nice restart, Melrose

:18:10. > :18:17.will get it, or will they? Yes they have. Early are knock-on by Melrose,

:18:18. > :18:29.they come together for the scrummage. Great aerial skills by

:18:30. > :18:37.Neil Irvin Hess. Harvey elms quickly down on the ball. Scrummage to

:18:38. > :18:50.Currie, chance to attack. He is Harvey elms again. This boy can run.

:18:51. > :18:56.Kind bounce for Currie, got them out with a bit of trouble. Look at that.

:18:57. > :19:12.Under pressure gets it back, here they come again. Melrose almost

:19:13. > :19:22.there. The try in the corner. Ali Miller gets the touchdown. Easy

:19:23. > :19:28.finish for Ali Miller, three or four metres, again, good work. Couple of

:19:29. > :19:38.turnovers by Melrose to Currie, Currie tried to play out of their

:19:39. > :19:45.own 22 and made them a mistake. Backed himself, the ball in two

:19:46. > :19:54.hands. Interesting, tackled, letting the ball go, picked it back up some

:19:55. > :19:55.made another few metres. And that is half-time. Ali Miller in the

:19:56. > :20:07.picture. Back to the studio. I am not in the studio, I am at the

:20:08. > :20:13.side of the pitch with Melrose legend Doddie Weir, Melrose ahead

:20:14. > :20:19.will make the crowd happy if they go and win? I think so, especially

:20:20. > :20:26.people from Melrose. Lovely to have a Borders team, there are many

:20:27. > :20:32.Borders team still in the competition which helps the

:20:33. > :20:34.atmosphere. Let's talk about the invitational teams, the Belgian

:20:35. > :20:39.international team look impressive, the French did not have it. They

:20:40. > :20:44.didn't, but Belgium did look very good, the way they are playing, they

:20:45. > :20:49.understand the game very good and had a great win in their first game.

:20:50. > :20:54.The French were just a bit under par but saying that Watsonians have done

:20:55. > :21:00.very well in the competition. They are on the way up at the moment, so

:21:01. > :21:03.they were against a hard team, no disgrace. The crowd were behind them

:21:04. > :21:08.but unfortunately they take no further part in this competition. I

:21:09. > :21:14.am not allowed to ask you about you winning this competition back when,

:21:15. > :21:20.the 1700s? I do have the medal, and I think I am winning the best

:21:21. > :21:26.addressed today. You think? Let's enjoy the second half. LAUGHTER

:21:27. > :21:38.COMMENTATOR: Would you listen to those two? The game back under way,

:21:39. > :21:42.Bruce Colvin gatherers. In the bright sunshine which has been with

:21:43. > :21:49.us all afternoon, no corner by Currie but the referee plays

:21:50. > :21:56.advantage. -- knock-on by Carrie. Change of pace, Harvey elms did

:21:57. > :22:01.well. Lovely running. Dropped it. Isn't that just like the thing, got

:22:02. > :22:10.in the clear and it squirted out of his grasp. I think he was thinking

:22:11. > :22:27.about how he would celebrate. On the deck, the vision to off-load it.

:22:28. > :22:37.I think George Taylor is the Melrose hooker in the middle of all that. He

:22:38. > :22:43.is back, just a young lad. You quite often get that, backs in fifteens

:22:44. > :22:49.will play in the forwards to try and get a bit more pace in there. Currie

:22:50. > :23:11.earned a penalty on halfway. Back it goes to Ainslie, the

:23:12. > :23:20.handoff. Currie building up patiently. This is better, three

:23:21. > :23:28.times he's been involved in this movement, McPhillips. Back it comes,

:23:29. > :23:34.Charlie Shiel, can he get another one, great score, great scorer for

:23:35. > :23:37.Robbie Neilson. Perfect teamwork, support play and not panicking under

:23:38. > :23:42.pressure. Keeping the ball alive and not allowing a contact point for

:23:43. > :23:49.Melrose to apply pressure. You saw Stephen Ainslie with some very good

:23:50. > :23:53.footwork, stepping inside twice and keeping the ball alive, Charlie

:23:54. > :23:58.Shiel with the dummy and then the great insight support. The difficult

:23:59. > :24:00.support line to most defend in sevens. Defenders tend to get lazy

:24:01. > :24:15.and nobody picked it up. Curried the game underway. -- Currie

:24:16. > :24:26.get the game underway. Floated pass almost intercepted. Handing off like

:24:27. > :24:37.Frank Bruno with a straight left. David Colvin if I am not mistaken.

:24:38. > :24:47.Melrose trying to find the gap. There is one. The man who will

:24:48. > :24:56.exploit it, Richard. Great off-load to keep it alive. Melrose have

:24:57. > :25:01.reorganised. Ali Miller can use it. He is strong and fast and look at

:25:02. > :25:08.him go, will he need support? He doesn't. Great piece of running by

:25:09. > :25:12.Ali Miller, trying to get behind the goal post for the easier conversion,

:25:13. > :25:18.he touches down just before he goes out over the dead-ball line. Good

:25:19. > :25:25.angle by Ali Miller to come on that line through the middle.

:25:26. > :25:29.Interesting, the under 20 number eight against the under 20 number

:25:30. > :25:52.scrum-half. The ball spinning past the left-hand

:25:53. > :25:59.upright, still a 5-point advantage for Melrose. Currie opened the

:26:00. > :26:08.scoring in the second half but Melrose have clawed their way back

:26:09. > :26:17.with two and a half minutes to go. This is a crucial time in this game.

:26:18. > :26:23.Travis Brody gets it. Trying to blow away a couple of would-be tacklers.

:26:24. > :26:33.Out to the left, out of a wide left-hand side. Bring it back again,

:26:34. > :26:44.chance here. They can go, Brody is the but Ainslie decided to go on his

:26:45. > :26:48.own. Penalty. Excellent tackle and got back to his feet over the ball.

:26:49. > :26:55.Currie did not fully sit there for a penalty and a chance for Melrose to

:26:56. > :27:00.slow things down a little bit. Only one score between the sides, it

:27:01. > :27:05.could go either way. This is David Colburn. Bruce Colvin. Ainslie has a

:27:06. > :27:25.flap with the tackle. Ainslie goes down with one hand like

:27:26. > :27:30.a big digger tried to pick it up. It's a fine line, did he need to try

:27:31. > :27:35.to off-load the ball? He's just given possession back to Currie with

:27:36. > :27:44.one last opportunity. Richard Smith and is on. -- Richard

:27:45. > :27:53.only got 50 metres to go, and you go. Here he goes, he will have a go

:27:54. > :28:02.at it. Such a big man. Currie lacking any real pace, having to

:28:03. > :28:06.work hard to create the score. It went forward, that was crucial

:28:07. > :28:10.because they have scored tries through very patient and long

:28:11. > :28:17.build-up and that was another one in the making. A real balance between

:28:18. > :28:25.team tries and individual tries, individual tries are great because

:28:26. > :28:27.they give you relief if you are attacking team. Unfortunately Currie

:28:28. > :28:32.don't look like they have the players, all the tries they have

:28:33. > :28:39.scored have been real team effort. Charlie Shiel at stand-off. Nelson

:28:40. > :28:57.at centre. And that's full-time, too late for a

:28:58. > :29:02.Currie, a win for Melrose. The host team go through into the

:29:03. > :29:05.quarterfinal. They will meet the winners of the previous tie, they

:29:06. > :29:11.will meet Watsonians and that will be a cracking game.

:29:12. > :29:19.I'm joined by the Melrose coach. John, the supporters will be very

:29:20. > :29:25.happy with that result? Yes, it's always a difficult tie. Currie were

:29:26. > :29:31.very good especially defensively and they'd make Mac -- they made us work

:29:32. > :29:37.really hard. Does it bring any added pressure, being the home side? It

:29:38. > :29:40.does, a lot of supporters come up to Melrose and they are not here for

:29:41. > :29:44.the rest of the year. We can probably start to relax a bit after

:29:45. > :29:48.that performance. Good luck in the next round.

:29:49. > :29:52.STUDIO Absolutely fantastic day here.

:29:53. > :29:58.Beautiful weather, lots of people there in fancy dress having a

:29:59. > :30:03.wonderful time. It's all going off here at the Greenyards. Lots of

:30:04. > :30:23.rugby today. COMMENTATOR: This is Marr against

:30:24. > :30:29.Herriots. This will be an interesting tie. They have played

:30:30. > :30:36.some good sevens, to be fair to them. This will be a good challenge

:30:37. > :30:54.for Heriots. Showed a bit of pace in the opening tie. Baird. Angus

:30:55. > :30:58.Johnstone. Then Johnstone with the scrum cap. Twins, I would have

:30:59. > :31:04.thought. Some big beef from the Heriots side. Tom Wilson is at

:31:05. > :31:17.scrum-half for Heriots, he has played here for Melrose in years

:31:18. > :31:22.gone by and he also had eight spell with... They are still attacking

:31:23. > :31:29.towards the 22. Colin Sturgeon just trying to wrong-foot -- wrong-foot

:31:30. > :31:34.the defence. Referee Neil Patterson says the ball has gone forward.

:31:35. > :31:42.Heriots ball. That is how close they are to be Heriots try line, only

:31:43. > :31:47.seven or eight metres away. They have had a really good season in the

:31:48. > :31:48.second tier of Scottish rugby and they are looking forward to a

:31:49. > :32:09.play-off, Wilson with the put-in. They have got Harry Boisseau out on

:32:10. > :32:18.the wing and he is a flyer. Great tackle, great covering tackle by

:32:19. > :32:25.Bickerstaff. Smith now, gives it to Mulligan. Mulligan with a sweatband

:32:26. > :32:32.on. A bit of defensive distress there but that covered back well.

:32:33. > :32:38.Heriots with the patient build-up. He goes through on his own, he's

:32:39. > :32:48.just made it! Not the tallest of men but he got the vital touch, first

:32:49. > :32:56.blood to Herriot. -- Heriots. A good break from their own half and

:32:57. > :33:04.finished strongly here. It takes a lot out of you, even running from a

:33:05. > :33:11.few yards in. Out on the field, very warm indeed. Certainly wasn't the

:33:12. > :33:16.best drop kick conversion there, a missed conversion, a 5-point ball

:33:17. > :33:22.game with Heriots going to restart and very interesting to see what

:33:23. > :33:26.they do with possession here. Tom Wilson just got a sniff of that half

:33:27. > :33:32.gap and he was through it just like that. Lovely view there. Looking

:33:33. > :33:38.from behind the goalposts down towards the River Tweed and. At the

:33:39. > :33:46.back is the big marquee, which hosts a lot of festive tea is and

:33:47. > :33:53.partying, Post-sevens partying. Bickerstaff gives it back to Baird,

:33:54. > :33:58.he is a wee wiry customer. Looks like they're going to have to pin

:33:59. > :34:04.him down and shackle him. They get it wide, good line. The Johnstone

:34:05. > :34:10.boys are there, Angus and Ben. Both of them wearing the black scrum

:34:11. > :34:13.caps. You will hear that a lot from the referees, tackle, release. When

:34:14. > :34:19.you make the tackle, you must release the ball to allow them to

:34:20. > :34:26.play the ball. Here is Fraser Grant. He thought he saw a door opened but

:34:27. > :34:30.the door closed thinly in his face. Bickerstaff with Johnstone outside

:34:31. > :34:34.him. This is a chance for Bickerstaff on the left and

:34:35. > :34:38.Johnstone will get the touchdown. That is the equaliser. They've

:34:39. > :34:44.obviously got a lot of support in this Melrose crowd, because that has

:34:45. > :34:51.raised a huge cheer. Lovely try. 5-5. Good finish, there. Pace and

:34:52. > :35:04.power down the outside. Good last-ditch tackle. It was Angus

:35:05. > :35:12.Johnson, number one, who got the touchdown. -- Johnston. That clock

:35:13. > :35:16.gives you a rough idea of how far they have to go, but look at the

:35:17. > :35:28.lay-off there. It might have been a bit of a wing and a prayer but Angus

:35:29. > :35:34.Johnston was there to take it. Some big men on this team, take a lot of

:35:35. > :35:52.stopping. There is Chris Mulligan. Heriots again working the ball into

:35:53. > :35:58.the space. Light footwork and acceleration, now Rae again, chance

:35:59. > :36:06.for Marr. A lot of tired bodies out there for Marr defensively. Great

:36:07. > :36:11.footwork but unfortunately the ball didn't get a hand and now a knock-on

:36:12. > :36:19.in their own 22. Stevie was speaking about Premiership rugby for the

:36:20. > :36:24.Heriots. It's a difference in what they have experienced as 15 A-side

:36:25. > :36:27.players in the season, but obviously Marr throwing all caution to the

:36:28. > :36:39.wind here and giving as good as they get. They have done themselves and

:36:40. > :36:43.their club proud, Marr, being here. Tom Watson forced into touch. The

:36:44. > :36:52.referee wants them to take that throw again. Three men in that

:36:53. > :37:00.line-out, sometimes they just have a couple. The throw in by Grant Baird,

:37:01. > :37:10.back it comes to Baird again. A change in tactics.

:37:11. > :37:20.Boisseau is back covering. Heriots have their chances. Wilson trying to

:37:21. > :37:24.size up their options, on the Heriots ten metres line. There is

:37:25. > :37:31.Carmichael, a long ball to the far side. He glides and just sort of

:37:32. > :37:42.slips through gaps, Mulligan. Didn't fancy bringing it this way.

:37:43. > :37:48.Boisseau looking for runners. A very good tackle. It was on Rudy

:37:49. > :37:52.Carmichael and he will know all about that one. Mulligan trying to

:37:53. > :38:03.break the tackle. Well played to Fraser Grant. Marr have not released

:38:04. > :38:09.the tackle, they have conceded the penalty. That was tight. Didn't

:38:10. > :38:17.release the ball when he was at the back of his feet and now it is a

:38:18. > :38:26.penalty. Here come Marr again. Wilson, the wee playmaker. Smith is

:38:27. > :38:35.on the inside. Clarke Smith, can he get there? After some very patient

:38:36. > :38:41.build-up work, Heriots get the try and that puts them ahead. You look

:38:42. > :38:44.at the body language of the Marr players now and they are very tired,

:38:45. > :38:53.looking forward to the half-time break. Rehydration is very important

:38:54. > :38:57.in any game, whether you are in the wet or the dry but particularly on a

:38:58. > :39:07.day like this. The players are perspiring a lot and it is very warm

:39:08. > :39:17.out there on the field. Played up through the middle, good off-load.

:39:18. > :39:25.It comes to the man on the outside. There is that inside pass, difficult

:39:26. > :39:30.to defend. It is a good score. He's such a big man. By the time you've

:39:31. > :39:36.tackled him two or three times your beginning to feel pretty tired.

:39:37. > :39:41.Looking at the crowd here, having a beautiful day, just in front of the

:39:42. > :39:44.main stand, the sun is shining, all enjoying themselves. They're not

:39:45. > :39:49.only enjoying what they are seeing on the pitch, they have got

:39:50. > :39:55.beautiful surroundings, as I said before. And the opportunity to be on

:39:56. > :39:58.television for them. There is a big television monitor, a huge screen

:39:59. > :40:05.down the way to the left. They can all see themselves on it but you can

:40:06. > :40:15.see they are enjoying it, sunglasses on and basking in the warmth. We are

:40:16. > :40:21.at 20 to four in the afternoon. This is Heriots kicking off in the second

:40:22. > :40:26.half against Marr. It is Marr's scrum half, Grant Baird, who gets

:40:27. > :40:30.the ball. Out it goes along the line. Doesn't quite have the

:40:31. > :40:40.blistering pace needed but he is persistent. Look at that, where are

:40:41. > :40:45.you? Get out the road! This wee lad, Grant Baird, knows what to do. This

:40:46. > :40:51.is a very good try in the making for Marr, if they can get there. Kyle

:40:52. > :40:56.Vallance, did he go into touch? There is Kyle Vallance, who has

:40:57. > :41:08.appeared as a sub. Well, did he make it or not? That is a big decision.

:41:09. > :41:14.The high tackle has prevented what would have been a definite score

:41:15. > :41:21.given. As a result, Neil Paterson has gone under the sticks and it's a

:41:22. > :41:25.penalty try. Five points to Marr, and Herriot 's may rue that, because

:41:26. > :41:35.the original try would have been out on the touchline but now' Marr has

:41:36. > :41:44.an opportunity to extend their lead. Colin Sturgeon with the conversion,

:41:45. > :41:51.14-10 to Marr. Here it is. Talk us through this one, then. Vallance has

:41:52. > :42:00.just come on, high tackle, no grounding. That's an interesting

:42:01. > :42:08.decision. That is obviously what the touch judge and the referee decided.

:42:09. > :42:17.They try would probably have been scored. The decision was correct.

:42:18. > :42:27.I'm sure there will be a debate about it later on. Now, what can

:42:28. > :42:33.they do? There are some tired lads out here. This wee fellow, Grant

:42:34. > :42:46.Baird, has really given a tremendous performance. Ben Johnston, as strong

:42:47. > :42:52.as a horse on the touchline there. You see the pressure starting to

:42:53. > :42:59.mount an Heriots, two breakdowns and two penalties in a row they have

:43:00. > :43:07.given away. There is a nervous looking Marr bench. He will be a bit

:43:08. > :43:13.worried. With his team leading by these four points. It is still a

:43:14. > :43:22.long time to go in seven aside rugby. Marr have got it again, Grant

:43:23. > :43:33.well tackled by Carmichael. The ball went back, or did it? The referee

:43:34. > :43:39.says it went forward. Not an thereby a Marr player, Bickerstaff I think

:43:40. > :43:43.it was. You just see that Marr are starting to get tired, no depth in

:43:44. > :43:46.their attack outside the original breakdown. You look at the Marr

:43:47. > :44:02.bench and they will be anxious. Here is Wilson, with the put-in.

:44:03. > :44:11.That is on the Heriots 22. The wee number ten at stand-off with the

:44:12. > :44:19.yellow boots, there he is. Marr pressing up. They have to make their

:44:20. > :44:24.tackles count. Patients may tell, as Mulligan puts it out this way. In

:44:25. > :44:33.field they go, Jordan Webster with deep as in. Mulligan. Marr doing be

:44:34. > :44:39.passing. They have got to get the ball back. Not this time, Heriots

:44:40. > :44:44.have done very well to get it out to Wilson. They have got 80 metres to

:44:45. > :44:50.go, a long way to go. They do, they are hoping for one piece of magic or

:44:51. > :44:54.one missed tackle. To be fair, Marr have defended really well but they

:44:55. > :44:57.have got to hold out. I bet with your time as Scottish coach you have

:44:58. > :45:05.been in a similar position, hoping for a piece of magic. Great tackle

:45:06. > :45:11.by Johnson on Mulligan. Marr takes his time and picks it up. Good

:45:12. > :45:19.tackle by the fresh lad who has come on. Difficult time here for Marr,

:45:20. > :45:24.they have to be very careful not to concede the penalty. That was Angus

:45:25. > :45:29.Johnston, out to his brother. Here they come again, the brothers in

:45:30. > :45:34.harmony. Come on come he says, get alongside me. As he got the legs to

:45:35. > :45:40.get there? Yes he has. What a brilliant piece of play by Angus

:45:41. > :45:47.Johnston and his brother Ben. Brilliant running by the Marr boys.

:45:48. > :45:50.That has put them ahead by 19 points to ten. You can see how much they

:45:51. > :45:58.enjoyed that, the two brothers together. Willing the other to go

:45:59. > :46:04.and keep running. No, you have it back, I'm not running 40 metres!

:46:05. > :46:13.Long strides by Angus Johnston, difficult to tackle. Suddenly it is

:46:14. > :46:17.21-10. You get folk who don't like to run the long distances but they

:46:18. > :46:22.are excellent playmakers. Neither of my brothers enjoyed running long

:46:23. > :46:29.distances playing rugby, either at school or when they were men! It is

:46:30. > :46:35.a long way away, 80 metres in front of you and one defender. That is a

:46:36. > :46:43.very comfy lead, 11 points, for Marr. Heriots up against it. Into

:46:44. > :46:47.the last minute. Out it comes to Boisseau, he might produce the bit

:46:48. > :46:56.of magic. What he taken out? I think so, penalty. Boisseau trying to

:46:57. > :47:09.create something, but the kick ahead and I think the two Marr boys just

:47:10. > :47:18.closed the gap. You want it as far up the field as possible. Simmons is

:47:19. > :47:24.the wee playmaker. John Ray in the middle of it. Putting unnecessary

:47:25. > :47:31.pressure on Tom Wilson, here's the captain. Can he score captain's try?

:47:32. > :47:37.A wee sidestep and a shimmy, lovely play. Great stuff from Boisseau,

:47:38. > :47:45.what a pass. Out the act door it went. That was a beautiful piece of

:47:46. > :47:46.play by Heriots. Brilliant work by Wilson, the captain. Stepped back

:47:47. > :47:56.inside. The score was converted and it looks

:47:57. > :48:01.like the referee is going to give them time from the restart. Well,

:48:02. > :48:06.we've seen some ties today which have been won at the death, so to

:48:07. > :48:12.speak. Will this be another one? It's going to be about the last

:48:13. > :48:21.play. Heriots have got the ball and that is what matters. The referee

:48:22. > :48:24.was very close to calling it as a maul and that would have been a

:48:25. > :48:32.turnover but they managed to get possession. I think they could have

:48:33. > :48:39.fought a bit harder to hold them up. Here come Heriots. Knight picked up

:48:40. > :48:45.by Mason. Going to feed it out. He has got Wilson out wide! The pass

:48:46. > :48:54.went all over the place! This is an important tackle. In the corner...

:48:55. > :48:57.Big, powerful lad. Heading for the corner. Heriots with the upper hand

:48:58. > :49:04.although they are trailing on the scoreline. There goes Webster. Out

:49:05. > :49:13.it comes, that is a vital tackle by Marr, and another couple of tackles

:49:14. > :49:17.by Marr. Oh! They have won their turnover but they have conceded a

:49:18. > :49:22.penalty. Great tackle but then they went off the field which did not

:49:23. > :49:31.allow Heriots to play. Unfortunately it's a penalty, so they are playing

:49:32. > :49:41.away. Heriots have had two chances and both times they have messed it

:49:42. > :49:46.up. Is Rae going to go through? Not if Marr have anything to say about

:49:47. > :49:50.it. What a catalogue of errors, what a pantomime. This is more like it,

:49:51. > :49:58.Webster in the corner for the winner! Is there! He has got it. He

:49:59. > :50:08.has got it! 22-21. What a finale to that tie. Look, it can be a cruel,

:50:09. > :50:16.cruel game. Marr would have thought they had the game won, Heriots

:50:17. > :50:21.scored that try and converted it. They have got possession back and

:50:22. > :50:28.they have retained it. Great off-load round the back. Great

:50:29. > :50:36.finish. So there we are, then. By the narrowest of margins, Heriots go

:50:37. > :50:41.through, having beaten Marr by 22 points to 21. That was a great tie.

:50:42. > :50:49.STUDIO Yes, real skin of the teeth stuff,

:50:50. > :50:53.Heriots through to the next round. Glasgow not here, they won the last

:50:54. > :50:58.two years and this was them in the final last year against Germany.

:50:59. > :51:07.They won that match 36-21. Absolutely fantastic side it was as

:51:08. > :51:13.well. Glasgow not there, but can Edinburgh do the same thing as

:51:14. > :51:21.Glasgow? The other pool team in Scotland. Can they do that here at

:51:22. > :51:24.the Greenyards? Direction GHA will have something to say about it!

:51:25. > :51:36.COMMENTATOR: They sure will. It's going to be GHA on the left. They

:51:37. > :51:40.have got Damien Hoyland, who can run rings past most people. That was

:51:41. > :51:49.some game we just watched, because we had both written Marr off. Very

:51:50. > :51:54.cruel game, John. You've got to go right to the end. A bit disappointed

:51:55. > :52:01.the referee played so many minutes at the end, but that is the game.

:52:02. > :52:05.We're on for a very exciting game. It's going to be interesting,

:52:06. > :52:08.because acrid temp too had a good game in the first round and they

:52:09. > :52:15.have got a game under their belt and Edinburgh are coming in what we call

:52:16. > :52:19.cold. Chris Dean, sevens player, has Hoyland outside him. The cow much

:52:20. > :52:28.more quickly the professionals are onto the ball. Old Scotland under 18

:52:29. > :52:32.player, great player in his day but now a physiotherapist. You've got

:52:33. > :52:35.the classic case here of the professionals up against the

:52:36. > :52:37.amateurs and everyone expects Edinburgh, as Glasgow did the last

:52:38. > :52:42.couple of years, to blow everyone away. But they going to have to win

:52:43. > :52:54.these games if they are to do that, as well. Watching Edinburgh last

:52:55. > :52:59.week, their defence, they are sharp. A bit of pace and a bit of

:53:00. > :53:04.confidence to play with. Dean just knocked on, nothing quite going

:53:05. > :53:10.Edinburgh's way. Beautiful day here at Melrose, sunny day. The perfect

:53:11. > :53:14.menu for what is the perfect game in the modern era now, the Olympic

:53:15. > :53:18.sport of sevens. Look at that, you cannot beat that shot, 10,000,

:53:19. > :53:24.11,000 people here basking in the spring sunshine. Edinburgh are the

:53:25. > :53:26.exception but a lot of the other teams here today will not have

:53:27. > :53:30.played in front of so many people and that just adds a wee bit of

:53:31. > :53:37.confidence, a wee bit of showboating. Good running here. That

:53:38. > :53:44.is an incredible break by the former sevens star himself, and the two

:53:45. > :53:48.brothers are on the field and he just went right the way through some

:53:49. > :53:55.pretty slack defending by the professionals, and the first try to

:53:56. > :54:05.GHA in the first two minutes. Very silky running. He was the stand-off

:54:06. > :54:13.at one stage in the Glasgow setup. There is a lot of rugby in Peter. As

:54:14. > :54:21.you mention, GHA are an amateur team. Good step, there. A bit of gas

:54:22. > :54:26.as well. That's what you need, a good combination of those things, a

:54:27. > :54:33.step and a bit of gas and able to hand off if required. But also,

:54:34. > :54:40.playing against a professional side, that sometimes obscure game by ten

:54:41. > :54:49.or 20%. Taken by Baird, who is on the ten metre line. That was George

:54:50. > :54:55.Turner. We saw George Turner play a great game down at Wales. Dean

:54:56. > :55:00.straight back into it. The power of Chris Dean, the captain, just too

:55:01. > :55:04.much strength for GHA. Turner started it and then Dean, the

:55:05. > :55:14.captain, eight good sevens player and making his name in the Edinburgh

:55:15. > :55:20.team. He has played a game and scored a try at the near post and

:55:21. > :55:29.that is what he'd deserved! Good goal! But that goal gets no points

:55:30. > :55:32.in this game, young man. Is that payback? Are you saying that's

:55:33. > :55:38.payback because he wasn't playing the game by the rolls, by the

:55:39. > :55:46.spirit? This is Turner. And there is the off-load, to Dean. Striding

:55:47. > :55:52.through the tackle. This is where Edinburgh support of the ball,

:55:53. > :55:58.running with the ball in hand. They are now into their stride, aren't

:55:59. > :56:02.they? Sam Baird. I think they are saying enough is enough and we will

:56:03. > :56:09.let you have the one try. They have got the likes of Baird and all these

:56:10. > :56:16.players, and there is the drop-kick. Edinburgh looking pretty comfortable

:56:17. > :56:22.now. Time off for injury at the moment. Sometimes this is what

:56:23. > :56:27.happens, strong running. We talk about it quite often hear on the

:56:28. > :56:32.commentary, it's the support that scored a try and they are certainly

:56:33. > :56:36.doing that well at the moment. Some strong runners breaking the first

:56:37. > :56:42.line of defence, the second one coming on at pace, at speed. Good

:56:43. > :56:50.angle taking the ball. Just too quick for GHA. Let's not forget...

:56:51. > :56:54.Oh, that's bad news. That is Grant Nielsen coming off. No one likes to

:56:55. > :57:01.see an injury and let's hope he's fine. Let's hope it's just a short

:57:02. > :57:10.time off from the game. Hoyland can really fly. Oh boy. Outside, that is

:57:11. > :57:15.pace. That just shows you, when you know you have got someone who can

:57:16. > :57:20.fly on the wing, beautiful try by Edinburgh, round the outside. Pace

:57:21. > :57:26.and power in abundance, there. Very simple, along the line, not much on

:57:27. > :57:30.and backing yourself, the ball in the correct hand for the handoff

:57:31. > :57:34.twice. There's nothing much you can do apart from make the tackles.

:57:35. > :57:42.Acrid temp to have got to not let their heads go down too much or this

:57:43. > :57:51.could be a big score. We have seen him as a good kicker in the

:57:52. > :57:57.fifteens, and Nathan Fauliss can run and pass and he has got a good route

:57:58. > :58:01.on him. The defence is good in the fifteens for Edinburgh, they won't

:58:02. > :58:04.miss too many tackles. Saying that, the first three minutes they were

:58:05. > :58:07.struggling. They have just found their pace.

:58:08. > :58:21.He goes through the pros again. Needs support, quick ball. Oh!

:58:22. > :58:26.Another break by Dean. Hoyland comes up the inside. He can dance on a

:58:27. > :58:34.sixpence. He looks up and found Turner, Turner there as well to

:58:35. > :58:38.break. Baird, going to be a penalty. Given back to Dean. Dean, the ball

:58:39. > :58:43.in the one hand, he skipped three people and off-loads. Straight

:58:44. > :58:51.through and Edinburgh again just showing enough class to put GHA a

:58:52. > :58:55.bit to the sword in this first half. The first half of this really key

:58:56. > :58:58.game. I think everyone will be watching, wanting to see how

:58:59. > :59:01.Edinburgh can do, will they be the same as the Warriors? They will be

:59:02. > :59:15.very confident in what they do. The drop outs have been spot on, his

:59:16. > :59:20.running and passing and his awareness. But that last try was set

:59:21. > :59:26.up by Strauss, he understands the game. Able to see where the ball was

:59:27. > :59:36.and able to win the ball back for Edinburgh Accies score. I am here

:59:37. > :59:42.with the Heriot's coach, his team sneaking through, you must have been

:59:43. > :59:46.relieved? The boys did well, just kept going, looks like we ran out of

:59:47. > :59:52.gas a little but kept going until the end which was pleasing. We think

:59:53. > :59:58.you might face Edinburgh, what have you made of their performance so

:59:59. > :00:02.far? They are being pushed all the way by GHA, they scored a good try

:00:03. > :00:06.at the start but Edinburgh look pretty strong. A lot of good

:00:07. > :00:11.ballplayers with pace and power. If it is Edinburgh we will have to try

:00:12. > :00:15.and match them. But it's not over yet, GHA are giving them a run for

:00:16. > :00:21.their money. Thank you for joining us.

:00:22. > :00:28.GHA playing right to left, the professionals against the amateurs.

:00:29. > :00:33.Coming up to 4pm here at the Greenyards, little venue. --

:00:34. > :00:48.beautiful little venue. That's what you do, you praise

:00:49. > :00:52.somebody, and just as we were seeing how well he is playing, and he has

:00:53. > :00:59.played really well, but just put that one straight into touch.

:01:00. > :01:11.Edinburgh ball. Cracking short ball to turn, brought to ground,

:01:12. > :01:16.knock-on. It will be a scrum to GHA. That's the difference in the sides,

:01:17. > :01:19.Edinburgh Accies in a lot of opportunities for themselves,

:01:20. > :01:22.understanding the game a little bit more, being more creative as well

:01:23. > :01:26.because they are offering space and when they come onto the ball they

:01:27. > :01:39.come on with power as well. But they do make mistakes. GHA have the ball.

:01:40. > :01:43.Straight out to the side to Tom Galbraith who is dumped by Turner.

:01:44. > :02:04.Penalty for not releasing. Up to half way almost. Grant Suttee

:02:05. > :02:08.cannot compete. You have two stay up, you cannot just Bridge in,

:02:09. > :02:11.cannot just dive in and put your body beyond the ball. Another

:02:12. > :02:30.penalty to GHA. Lots of running in him. Leeds

:02:31. > :02:34.helpers off the shoulder. -- needs. Straightens up and sees the posts,

:02:35. > :02:44.gets dragged down, beautiful off-load. This is GHA with the good

:02:45. > :02:50.fight back. That is the way to do it. Come on at pace, when you get in

:02:51. > :02:58.the tackle off-load. The referee allowing the pass off the ground,

:02:59. > :03:03.good supporting drive. It's all about the support. If you have the

:03:04. > :03:19.support in sevens you go on to score points. This time using his boot to

:03:20. > :03:28.good advantage. Just supported the ball carrier. We reckon 10,000,

:03:29. > :03:29.11,000 people of all ages, all well-behaved, enjoying this great

:03:30. > :04:00.spectacle. he started it and he finishes it at

:04:01. > :04:08.the other end for Edinburgh, great team try. Very good team try. Direct

:04:09. > :04:17.running at some stages by the big men but when they want to open it up

:04:18. > :04:24.they can. The hard work done 50, 60 yards by this man. He has been

:04:25. > :04:36.instrumental in making Edinburgh win this tie at the moment. 29-14, three

:04:37. > :04:44.minutes left. Too much power and pace, he started it and he finished

:04:45. > :04:51.it. When you were playing, you could think you were back in it, we

:04:52. > :04:57.thought GHA were back in it, but one try puts that distance and the heads

:04:58. > :05:00.go down. But they have still got a chance. I know Gregor Townsend says

:05:01. > :05:08.you don't count the try until really... I think he might be

:05:09. > :05:18.nicknamed Krakatoa because that was and there is the knock-on... This is

:05:19. > :05:23.when you get hit to win you don't know where it's coming from. He can

:05:24. > :05:29.see where it's coming from because the ball came from his left and the

:05:30. > :05:35.tackle came from blindside right. You also have to thank the person

:05:36. > :05:43.who passed you the ball! The hospital pass. Yes. Too easy, he's

:05:44. > :05:50.already scored one and look at the power. Just drifted out, ball to his

:05:51. > :05:57.right hand side, hand off with the left and he looks like a good

:05:58. > :06:08.player. He does and he is. Makes it so easy. I don't know about you but

:06:09. > :06:12.I think Edinburgh look like the best team so far. Belgium worked OK.

:06:13. > :06:17.Melrose will be fighting tooth and nail to stay in the competition. But

:06:18. > :06:23.so far Edinburgh look the most complete team, with that be fair? I

:06:24. > :06:27.would agree with that. You have stars in the side, people who can

:06:28. > :06:33.run, people who can handoff, people who have a lot of understanding in

:06:34. > :06:39.the game. Belgium could come into the game as well, that would be

:06:40. > :06:43.quite exciting and the Borders sides will be playing with grit and

:06:44. > :06:58.determination. This is the last second round game. Some very good

:06:59. > :07:13.teams in the quarterfinals. Makes his man turn, just too far to go.

:07:14. > :07:19.Well rescued. Strauss picks it up. David to Dean and he knows if he

:07:20. > :07:21.just keeps going, this is good courage by some of these GHA

:07:22. > :07:35.players. Chasing back. They can take some heart, the GHA

:07:36. > :07:41.players, not giving in. Behind but playing right to the final whistle.

:07:42. > :07:46.The only arbiter of time is the referee, I don't think he is hooked

:07:47. > :07:53.up to our time, it is his time they play too. They have just been told

:07:54. > :07:57.that is it. Edinburgh Castle winners, 36-14. -- Edinburgh

:07:58. > :08:08.comfortable winners. STUDIO: Edinburgh look like good

:08:09. > :08:12.winners, the most impressive teams so far. The second round is

:08:13. > :08:34.complete, the quarterfinal coming up very soon indeed.

:08:35. > :08:40.Watsonians won this competition 20 years ago this weekend, and they are

:08:41. > :08:47.going very well, knocking out the French side fairly comfortably.

:08:48. > :09:07.Heriot's getting through by the skin of their teeth.

:09:08. > :09:13.It all carries on to the live-action, people sitting in the

:09:14. > :09:18.sunshine and enjoying some fantastic play and you are enjoying it here on

:09:19. > :09:22.BBC Two Scotland. Stay with us all afternoon, this is the first of the

:09:23. > :09:33.quarterfinals, Edinburgh Accies against Gala. Gala last won this

:09:34. > :09:44.competition in 1999. COMMENTATOR: Both teams looking to

:09:45. > :09:50.get their name on the couple because they've not done it for some time.

:09:51. > :09:56.Trying to get away from you and Scott.

:09:57. > :10:09.Lovelier running. He's a very willowy runner, gliding through the

:10:10. > :10:16.gaps. Talented player, played full-back for Scotland under 18 's

:10:17. > :10:24.last year. Accies building up very patiently. Looking good. Just been

:10:25. > :10:30.forced out into the corner. That was a great tackle by James Parker. Look

:10:31. > :10:40.at the muscles on that guy. He is all power. It was that power which

:10:41. > :10:47.forced the touch in the corner. Great cover tackle by Jamie Parker.

:10:48. > :10:54.Looking at both the teams, slightly different, Gala look a lot more

:10:55. > :11:01.physical than Edinburgh Accies. There might be a contrast in styles

:11:02. > :11:14.here. Long throw over the tale came to nothing.

:11:15. > :11:23.Jack Patterson in the distance. One is a prop the other is the winger

:11:24. > :11:30.today. Chance for Accies up the narrow side. That could be him in at

:11:31. > :11:39.the corner. Good try for Accies. Came from a messy scrummage. Was a

:11:40. > :11:48.bit of turnover. Good vision by the former Scotland sevens player. Great

:11:49. > :11:56.food work, stood up the last defender and stretched out for the

:11:57. > :12:02.scorer. -- footwork. He's done it from the touchline. Young Ben

:12:03. > :12:11.Appleson adding another couple of points. He gets the try and he

:12:12. > :12:18.converts it. Great conversion from the touchline, great start for

:12:19. > :12:27.Accies. They're well having another one if Gala not careful. Scrummage

:12:28. > :12:35.five metres out. Ewan Scott to the rescue. This is identical position

:12:36. > :12:38.that the last score came from so interesting to see what Gala do to

:12:39. > :12:44.try to counter Accies on this occasion.

:12:45. > :12:56.The ball comes out again. Was it knocked on? I think it was.

:12:57. > :13:01.Interesting, Gala reckon may have the upper hand in the scrummage and

:13:02. > :13:05.had a go at the Edinburgh Accies scrum, pressure applied, some

:13:06. > :13:14.uncertainty as the ball came out. Didn't get down on the ball quick

:13:15. > :13:21.enough, turnover, Gala scrum. Here is Scott, he is a strong laddie.

:13:22. > :13:26.Lovely play, Craig dogs. The flick of the wrists to get the ball out to

:13:27. > :13:34.the far side, James Parker, crashing tackle by jack Patterson. Little

:13:35. > :13:47.shimmy and wiggle but not enough. Here is Scott. Accies backtracking

:13:48. > :13:50.as they get into space. Robson. He is either kicked it ahead or had it

:13:51. > :13:52.knocked out his grasp, could not quite see that the referee says play

:13:53. > :14:03.on. Seize the gap and goes through it,

:14:04. > :14:11.he is away. He can relax a little bit, but he doesn't know that. There

:14:12. > :14:18.we are, touching down under the crossbar. There we go, another try

:14:19. > :14:24.for Edinburgh Accies. Just shows the way the game can swing. Gala

:14:25. > :14:34.struggling, their pace man out injured for this tie. Got the ball

:14:35. > :14:43.in his own 22, stepped inside, saw the gap and managed to go 70, 80

:14:44. > :14:56.metres. Adds the conversion, full points again, 14-0. There is no

:14:57. > :15:04.substitution for pace in this game. Accies have got a few players who

:15:05. > :15:10.can go the length. Accies have won the penalty. It's all about

:15:11. > :15:14.possession, and angry words to the referee, back ten metres. Off they

:15:15. > :15:36.go. Gala having to do all the tackling.

:15:37. > :15:44.Accies in command and control. That is known as the agricultural belt in

:15:45. > :15:51.the Borders. Young Ben Appleson backing himself, straight through

:15:52. > :15:56.the gap. That is a high tackle. Brilliant running and a terrible

:15:57. > :16:01.tackle by Ewan Scott. An absolute shocker. It was high and

:16:02. > :16:07.unnecessary. Probably in the heat of the moment he's got to go. Correct

:16:08. > :16:14.decision by the referee. Ben Appleson making the break, just

:16:15. > :16:21.blindsided high tackle. Not for the faint-hearted. Rightly so the

:16:22. > :16:27.referee has dealt with that in the appropriate fashion. Two minutes in

:16:28. > :16:31.the sin-bin. Very difficult defending with six players, believe

:16:32. > :16:38.me. Good to see Ben Appleson backed up. Gets a round of applause from

:16:39. > :16:44.the spectators and an opportunity with the extra man for Edinburgh

:16:45. > :16:52.Accies. Clean through. Without the extra man, without the seventh man,

:16:53. > :16:56.the Gala defence is a bit leaky. 19-0 with the conversion to come

:16:57. > :17:00.from in front of the posts. Accies are striding away with this and we

:17:01. > :17:06.are still in the first half. The first of the quarterfinals.

:17:07. > :17:11.Difficult enough defending with seven players let alone six. What

:17:12. > :17:13.will be disappointing for a Gala is they did not make Accies work for

:17:14. > :17:24.the scorer. He is a great wee player, Alex

:17:25. > :17:36.Glasheen Eden. The extra two points are so

:17:37. > :17:41.important as well. Absolutely, we always said in sevens, 22 points was

:17:42. > :17:47.the key number, if you could get more than three scorers away. Gala

:17:48. > :17:55.in the huddle, they will be questioning how do you get back in

:17:56. > :17:59.this game. You have seven minutes, Accies have shown you can score

:18:00. > :18:03.three tries in seven minutes so Gala will be looking to get hold of the

:18:04. > :18:07.ball and set the tempo. Accies now the next score is critical survey

:18:08. > :18:12.will be talking about getting their hands on the ball, getting the next

:18:13. > :18:23.score and taking the game away from Gala. Gala have done most of the

:18:24. > :18:30.defending and it's a lot harder than attacking. As you can see from that

:18:31. > :18:35.glorious shot the weather is still holding here in Melrose. Ewan Scott

:18:36. > :18:42.who was sin-binned for a couple of minutes for a head high tackle. And

:18:43. > :18:49.that is the man who scored the last driver Edinburgh Accies. -- the last

:18:50. > :18:53.try for Edinburgh Accies. I don't think anybody would have thought

:18:54. > :18:57.this would be the score at half-time, Gala have it all to do

:18:58. > :19:02.but they have got runners and some good rugby players in the team.

:19:03. > :19:14.Parker is one of these runners. Patterson has him. Big tackle there.

:19:15. > :19:19.On Stevie Cairns. The touch judge has his flag up, good defence by

:19:20. > :19:27.Edinburgh Accies. Parker trying to use his power to breakthrough but

:19:28. > :19:39.solid defence, lineout for Accies. Lovely take by Accies. Jack

:19:40. > :19:44.Patterson, tackle by Robson, interception by Graham Spiers. Here

:19:45. > :20:02.come Gala. William tackle there. It was a tries -- try saver. Robson not

:20:03. > :20:07.quite sure which way to go. Tries to give the runaround but can't. The

:20:08. > :20:11.head goes back and the disappointment and exasperation.

:20:12. > :20:17.Work hard to try and create space because they are a man down. That's

:20:18. > :20:25.him coming back on now. Looks as though Ewan Scott will remain off

:20:26. > :20:36.the field. Dwayne Burrows replacing him. They are back up to full

:20:37. > :20:45.complement. Edinburgh Accies able to capitalise on Galashiels being a man

:20:46. > :20:51.down. Simon Fairbairn is on as number ten. Noted

:20:52. > :21:01.little sidestep. Brilliant interception. Gala still have,

:21:02. > :21:11.Burroughs, big and strong and relatively fresh. Here they come,

:21:12. > :21:16.Graham Spiers with pace. Lovely try by Graham Spiers for Gala. That is

:21:17. > :21:20.their first try in this quarterfinal, they need another two

:21:21. > :21:30.to get level or anywhere close to Edinburgh Accies. Good finish by

:21:31. > :21:46.Graham Spiers. Just over four minutes to go. 21-7, two converted

:21:47. > :21:56.tries in it. Just another short. It was a magnificent conversion. It was

:21:57. > :22:00.and they are critical as we said. What is a centre doing in the thick

:22:01. > :22:07.of that? He will be wondering that himself. That's the beauty of

:22:08. > :22:09.sevens, you need to be interchangeable, every player on the

:22:10. > :22:21.field needs to be able to deal with the kick-off. Takes it up, tackle by

:22:22. > :22:27.Craig Keddie who has come on as a replacement for Galashiels. Here

:22:28. > :22:33.goes Ben Appleson, that is brilliant running. The change of pace, little

:22:34. > :22:39.wiggle and one goal and then the change of pace. That surely has

:22:40. > :22:48.sealed Galashiels fate? What are try. Outstanding, tucking it on the

:22:49. > :22:55.left-hand and a little goose-step and under the post. His father

:22:56. > :23:02.played sevens for Scotland years ago and he will be proud to see that.

:23:03. > :23:07.He's a very exciting young player. Played for Scotland under 18's last

:23:08. > :23:11.week. Great to see him coming out here and expressing himself. And

:23:12. > :23:15.having the confidence in the senior game to do that sort of stuff is

:23:16. > :23:20.tremendous. Granted there is more space but he has the confidence to

:23:21. > :23:26.do it. What can Galashiels do now because that was a ball out of the

:23:27. > :23:35.blue. Accies have stolen the ball again. The whole of Gala waiting for

:23:36. > :23:44.them. Evans has come on for Accies, number ten. That looked as though it

:23:45. > :23:51.might have gone forward. Gala with advantage. Accies with the ball.

:23:52. > :24:00.Here they come again. Trying to get outside.

:24:01. > :24:08.Good pick-up, Graham Spiers, that is the right tactic, kick and chase.

:24:09. > :24:13.Graham Spiers has the pace you see. Evans doesn't. It's a long way, well

:24:14. > :24:21.the ball bounced kindly, watch it closely, he is there. Another great

:24:22. > :24:30.try by Graham Spiers for Gala. That might be a lifeline. Gala turned the

:24:31. > :24:43.ball over, Graham Spiers with great vision, knew the sweeper wasn't at

:24:44. > :24:51.home. And then great pace, and converted, 28-14 with a minute to

:24:52. > :25:01.go. Here, Gala again. Has to release. Just a rush of blood to the

:25:02. > :25:07.head. Very good defence by Accies to get over the ball. Had ago, got

:25:08. > :25:17.isolated, had no support so held onto the Accies got over the ball

:25:18. > :25:25.and that is probably the game. Accies again taking their time and

:25:26. > :25:34.working this ball the way they want. Gets the ball back cleanly, look at

:25:35. > :25:38.that, out it goes. They have a decent margin between them and Gala,

:25:39. > :25:45.so they bring on fresh legs to try to keep the tempo up, not do

:25:46. > :25:55.anything silly. Put down in a thumping tackle but Accies going

:25:56. > :25:58.away at the far touchline. Little one round the back. I don't think it

:25:59. > :26:10.was what he meant, penalty coming Accies way. Penalty out and a good

:26:11. > :26:14.victory. The Gala defender taking the Accies player without the ball

:26:15. > :26:19.so that was a penalty. Great victory for Accies, they are a young team

:26:20. > :26:30.but looking strong. Very convincing for Accies.

:26:31. > :26:40.Impressive style, is that your team in Top Gear or is there more to

:26:41. > :26:47.come? Hopefully there is more to come, second half of the first round

:26:48. > :26:55.proper we played really well, that was exceptional sevens. Half that

:26:56. > :27:01.team are under 20, just young boys, a couple of 17-year-olds, it's been

:27:02. > :27:06.great. Ben Appleson was very impressive, you look to have a

:27:07. > :27:10.special talent there. Looks like it, has just come back from Wales,

:27:11. > :27:13.playing under 18 is for Scotland, talented kid. Best of luck in the

:27:14. > :27:26.semifinals. Thank you. COMMENTATOR: Welcome to the second

:27:27. > :27:33.semifinal, a small borders town, Jed-Forest from Jedburgh playing

:27:34. > :27:39.right-to-left in the iconic blue up against Belgium in their national

:27:40. > :27:48.colours. This will be a great game because Belgium look good and to be

:27:49. > :27:52.fair Jed looked good as well. Strike runners are very important in the

:27:53. > :27:57.game of sevens, we are on for a very exciting game. You could also see

:27:58. > :28:13.that Jed was a country in its own. Back inside to Lewis Young, what a

:28:14. > :28:17.break. Just commanding display. I've seen him play here a few times and

:28:18. > :28:22.if you've not seen him play before, Lewis Young, he's got everything

:28:23. > :28:28.sevens player needs. Size and crucially he has and vision. Belgium

:28:29. > :28:32.went from a big hit, didn't wrap the hands around him, let him go and

:28:33. > :28:38.when you do that against this kind of man, the talent he's got, he's

:28:39. > :28:44.only going to go one way, to the line and score. Sometimes you can

:28:45. > :28:47.get mistaken for his brother, they look very alike and Campbell run.

:28:48. > :28:57.Luckily they have different numbers on their back.

:28:58. > :29:07.That was Lewis Young who played really well last year too. It is Jed

:29:08. > :29:17.up against the Belgians. The shadows just lengthening, as the ball goes

:29:18. > :29:28.skyward. They showed enough power to get through Aberdeen Grammar. Some

:29:29. > :29:41.really good tries in the early game the Belgium. Jed just making it

:29:42. > :29:45.difficult for the Belgians. He got the spark going for the Belgians in

:29:46. > :29:53.the first half and he did exactly the same there. Great tackle by

:29:54. > :30:04.Jedforest. You do that just to try to stop that off-load. Stop the

:30:05. > :30:17.strike coming in. A big front row for the Belgians. Into this wide

:30:18. > :30:24.expanse that Jed love so much. Just called for obstruction there.

:30:25. > :30:29.Harkness just looks on. The Belgians are powerful players but it's all

:30:30. > :30:40.about sevens expertise and it is Jed playing right to left. Hogg, It was.

:30:41. > :30:48.Out to Young on that right wing. Harkness always available. This is

:30:49. > :30:56.him now. Look at that, the ball in his left hand. Inside pass by

:30:57. > :31:12.Chisholm. Inside to the big front row.

:31:13. > :31:21.Off-load. That could have been a high tackle too. That is a couple of

:31:22. > :31:33.silly high tackles. Not moving away too quickly. A couple of high

:31:34. > :31:40.tackles and Vermont not happy at all, as is his right. He was just

:31:41. > :31:48.taken out. It is inexcusable there. No excuse for that whatsoever. His

:31:49. > :31:56.reaction is maybe not quite as quick as they should be but there was no

:31:57. > :32:05.excuse for that. I think they were trying to get the maul. It's going

:32:06. > :32:12.to be a Belgian ball. I think he was tackled early, going to be a penalty

:32:13. > :32:20.to Belgium. It's going to be a sin-binning. I think this was just

:32:21. > :32:34.tackling before the man had the ball. That just gives Loic enough

:32:35. > :32:55.space to get the Belgian try number two. He has been on the try sheet

:32:56. > :32:59.already. Jed have got a man in the sin-bin for two minutes, make the

:33:00. > :33:14.advantage count. He seems to be taking his time, Loic Lechien. Well

:33:15. > :33:22.spotted. Here is the penalty. Five and a half minutes gone, Jed 5-7

:33:23. > :33:27.Belgium. This is the try. It all came as the man was heading away,

:33:28. > :33:34.through the man, good try by Lechien, just taking advantage of

:33:35. > :33:44.the extra space. Young had his eyes on the kick. Lechien. Confident on

:33:45. > :33:51.the ball. He keeps changing pace, changing direction. Now to the big

:33:52. > :34:03.man on the far side, huge man. This could be over the line again and it

:34:04. > :34:10.is all Belgium now, isn't it? Is another's sin-binning. This is

:34:11. > :34:17.extraordinary. This is going to be Jed down to five men for two cynical

:34:18. > :34:28.penalties. The big man goes for it, well tackled. Hold him up, don't let

:34:29. > :34:39.the ball out. Justifiably a yellow card. That is two men down. This is

:34:40. > :34:44.the playmaker. Knocked on by the Belgian. Harkness. Can Jed conjure

:34:45. > :34:49.something out of real adversity? Dancing behind their own try line.

:34:50. > :34:52.This could be weight of numbers, Belgium trying to get the ball. This

:34:53. > :35:01.is extraordinary, five against seven. Five against seven, I have

:35:02. > :35:11.never seen this before in my life. This is Loic Lechien, Harkness, his

:35:12. > :35:18.side two men down. He can afford to waste a bit of time! If ever there

:35:19. > :35:22.was a bit of time to waste, putting the ball between the posts, this is

:35:23. > :35:27.it. He's been sporting he's put the ball down now. He's been there and

:35:28. > :35:41.done it before, he knows what it's all about. So,

:35:42. > :35:56.Jed two men down and winning at half-time against Belgium. Finding

:35:57. > :36:04.quick man but when you have got five players against seven, you can

:36:05. > :36:12.afford one against one. Belgium should be kicking themselves for

:36:13. > :36:16.that one. I'm sure they will be. It has been a nice warm sunny day and

:36:17. > :36:23.we have got some great games coming out. Edinburgh Accies through to the

:36:24. > :36:28.semifinal. Next up, what Sony and against Melrose. And then an all

:36:29. > :36:34.conquering Edinburgh side. We will bring you the final. This is one of

:36:35. > :36:39.the great tournaments in the world. One of the is that we don't have

:36:40. > :36:49.though many of the all conquering overseas teams who come here, it's

:36:50. > :36:52.much more to do with clubs like Jed, Melrose, bringing your Edinburghs

:36:53. > :37:02.against an international team like Belgium. Aljamaaheer fought a good

:37:03. > :37:12.time, it gives the local clubs a chance. You can see the supporters

:37:13. > :37:16.like that, they love the minnows. What is exciting, we mentioned

:37:17. > :37:19.before, the fact that we have had five hours of rugby and they are

:37:20. > :37:25.still keen to keep watching and excited. Your point before the match

:37:26. > :37:32.was, you could watch this all day. Look at the crowd, it's a different

:37:33. > :37:36.menu every time. Two teams come on and play different ways. It's a

:37:37. > :37:50.different menu. A very exciting menu it is as well. Gregor Young. The

:37:51. > :38:00.ball taken back. Jed trying to turn this over, the big man sends it out.

:38:01. > :38:07.Van Trappen Hands off one man. It's going to be a scrum to Jed, they

:38:08. > :38:16.will just take their time and tried to run down the clock. Now six men

:38:17. > :38:26.against seven. He's coming back like a scalded rabbit. There he is.

:38:27. > :38:33.Jed... I've never seen that before. Five men... Belgium have to look at

:38:34. > :38:45.the way they are playing and how they allow that to happen. Every bit

:38:46. > :38:51.of the game is important but we are entering into an important phase

:38:52. > :38:58.now. If Belgian get a try now, they are right back in the game. If Jed

:38:59. > :39:05.can get back on the pitch, it's doubly difficult. It does, and also

:39:06. > :39:14.the conversion. Try and keep them in the corners. He has a Mac!

:39:15. > :39:28.-- he has a mesmeric sidestep, Harkness. One of the great sevens

:39:29. > :39:31.players. We've got to stop praising players sometimes like that because

:39:32. > :39:41.when we do, they make a massive mistake. My friend to the left's

:39:42. > :39:49.heart is going... This is good, this is a good game. We talked about

:39:50. > :39:57.Fraser Harkness before and you mention it, not built for sevens but

:39:58. > :40:06.it's lovely to see from a sevens player. Van Trappen steps inside,

:40:07. > :40:15.the Belgian has got a try back. So, Belgian, it was 12-7 and it is now

:40:16. > :40:18.12-12. They are on the second grade circuit, aren't they? Some of these

:40:19. > :40:24.players are pretty good and they were a bit overawed by the start

:40:25. > :40:32.that Jed had, but they are fighting back. Unfortunately there is no real

:40:33. > :40:42.creation there. Van Trappen did very well. But it was just a loose tackle

:40:43. > :40:48.by Jed and they can't afford to do that at this level. If you do, this

:40:49. > :40:52.is what happens. I remember the Glasgow Warriors coach would say you

:40:53. > :40:57.can coach anything, but in rugby it comes down to a dropped pass or a

:40:58. > :41:02.missed tackle. Most turnovers are a dropped pass or a missed tackle. And

:41:03. > :41:23.we saw there, that try came down to a missed tackle. Chisholm. Young.

:41:24. > :41:28.Harkness is on the right wing. Here he is, Fraser Harkness. He needs a

:41:29. > :41:38.moment of magic. Lovely, brought in three men.

:41:39. > :41:48.Callan, it was. Two Lewis Young. It's going to be a try. The

:41:49. > :41:55.speedster on the left wing just flying in. That is a cracking way to

:41:56. > :42:02.get back into this match. You thought the boy Young was going to

:42:03. > :42:08.take it on but no, someone faster than him by the looks of things. He

:42:09. > :42:21.has certainly shown he can move. It's been exciting, hasn't it? In

:42:22. > :42:27.the pink and white, very noticeable. And it is between the posts, 19-14.

:42:28. > :42:35.Roscoe showing a real turn of pace down that left-wing. A couple of

:42:36. > :42:41.minutes left, a 5-point game. Belgium could -- if Belgian could

:42:42. > :42:47.score one goal and convert, they would be in the lead. Can they get

:42:48. > :43:00.this ball, man on ball? Well jumped. Well read, though. I was about to

:43:01. > :43:08.say... Turnover by Harkness! Gregor Young just tackle, what a tackle

:43:09. > :43:15.that was. Unfortunate because Gill was just inside him. Write down the

:43:16. > :43:20.wing, there we go. Stole the ball, Harkness they're called for it,

:43:21. > :43:30.great tap tackle to save the day for Belgium. I tell you, I think Jed's

:43:31. > :43:36.broken field players very good. Lewis Young to the flyer again and

:43:37. > :43:42.another try this time from Roscoe, his second in a couple of minutes.

:43:43. > :43:46.Jed stamping their authority on this tie, extraordinary turnaround. You

:43:47. > :43:51.have to wonder what he was doing in the first half. He must have been

:43:52. > :43:58.looking at the crowd or something. He didn't start the game, that's

:43:59. > :44:03.maybe why. They brought him on at half-time! Great move, great

:44:04. > :44:08.substitution there, because he certainly changed the game. If he

:44:09. > :44:18.has got the ball, he knows the way to go. That will be beyond all doubt

:44:19. > :44:23.now and as Stevie Gemmill says, you cannot beat pace. That man has run

:44:24. > :44:34.into try is. Watch this. Still work to do. The Belgian winger had the

:44:35. > :44:38.pace. Great to see a player run round the outside, have the

:44:39. > :44:46.confidence to do that. Belgium can't win this game now. Harkness just

:44:47. > :44:52.winning the tackle. Well done Jed, through to the first semifinal, they

:44:53. > :45:02.play Edinburgh Accies and that will be a cracker. Van Trappen goes down

:45:03. > :45:11.that wing. Edinburgh trying to get the ball back and they do. The

:45:12. > :45:19.Georgian player. Big, strong handoff.

:45:20. > :45:31.Belgium just trying to salvage a bit of reputation. He is at the heart of

:45:32. > :45:35.everything good that Belgium have been doing. It would be fitting if

:45:36. > :45:42.he got the last try. Could be, with a chip through. The referee will

:45:43. > :45:47.bring this game... That is a great game because that is great for the

:45:48. > :45:53.competition, a local team, Jed, beating a country, Belgium.

:45:54. > :46:02.Well, there we are in this incredible tournament. Jedforest

:46:03. > :46:06.24-14 Belgium. STUDIO

:46:07. > :46:10.A fantastic win for Jedforest up against Belgium. Stevie Gemmill has

:46:11. > :46:14.joined me. What has been particularly impressive about the

:46:15. > :46:18.quarterfinals we've seen so far? Pakistan a very young team.

:46:19. > :46:24.-- Edinburgh Accies are a very young team.

:46:25. > :46:32.We see him here, individual skill, gas, everything. Great runner. Two

:46:33. > :46:36.Hanson early on to draw the defence on and then when he decided to go,

:46:37. > :46:40.he put the ball in one hand. Exciting player and it's great like

:46:41. > :46:45.somebody -- that summary like that can come in and perform on this

:46:46. > :46:50.stage. One thing really impressive about Jed's performance, they were

:46:51. > :46:55.two players down at one point and they managed to score a try. Very

:46:56. > :47:00.unusual. Unusual to have two sin-bins in a game but very unusual

:47:01. > :47:07.to score when you are two players down. Great for them and great for

:47:08. > :47:11.the town to beat a country. Absolutely. Looking forward to this

:47:12. > :47:19.one. What Sony and is up against Melrose.

:47:20. > :47:32.-- Watsonians. Look at that, what a handoff. Is that Rory Drummond? It

:47:33. > :47:40.is. That is the 117th try of the competition. Tries are the great

:47:41. > :47:49.coinage of rugby and my goodness we have had a feud this afternoon. -- a

:47:50. > :47:55.few. Good start by Watsonians. Not even a minute on the clock. Melrose

:47:56. > :48:01.back to wearing their traditional black top. They won't be happy with

:48:02. > :48:10.that. That is the problem sometimes, you just go to tackle that bit too

:48:11. > :48:22.hi, you just get the shoulder. Trying to fight off Drummond,

:48:23. > :48:27.Drummond coming a bit higher. Just a bit of a mix-up. Trying to find a

:48:28. > :48:39.loophole in the Watsonians midfield defence. That is at the Melrose ten.

:48:40. > :48:43.Colvin. To the far side. This is George Taylor. Melrose have changed

:48:44. > :48:49.their jerseys and their numbers, their numbers are much easier to see

:48:50. > :48:55.this time, I have to say. This might just be the opportunity they have

:48:56. > :48:59.been waiting for. Talking about the numbers on the jersey, that might

:49:00. > :49:11.just be a sign of age, young man! Chance here, great running by Ali

:49:12. > :49:16.Miller. Try, surely? Down in the corner and Evan Hess gets the

:49:17. > :49:24.touchdown but Miller did all the donkey work. Good assist, possibly

:49:25. > :49:28.makes up for his initial weave when trying to tackle. Going too hi in

:49:29. > :49:46.the tackle. Evan Hess in the corner. The conversion attempt, you can see

:49:47. > :49:52.the packed ranks of spectators. There is Richard Milne, who was

:49:53. > :50:00.unsuccessful with that kick, and Hess who got the try. This is where

:50:01. > :50:07.it came about. Not sure whether it was his man or not. Good running

:50:08. > :50:14.through the first phase. Look at this! This is tremendous running.

:50:15. > :50:19.This is Scott McKean, for Watsonians. That is a bullion piece

:50:20. > :50:25.of rugby sevens from Watsonians. Now, has he got the ball down? -- a

:50:26. > :50:28.brilliant piece of rugby Evans. The drive is given. The drive is given.

:50:29. > :50:39.-- the try is given. No sooner do Watsonians strike than Melrose

:50:40. > :50:45.strike back. That is the sign of a really good team. I'm not sure where

:50:46. > :50:58.it came from. Oh yes, just not quite taking the kick-off. Can't dispute

:50:59. > :51:05.that one. In sevens, there is no video to go to, no slow Mo. We have

:51:06. > :51:10.it, but the referee doesn't. That is the point you're making. That is the

:51:11. > :51:18.point, yes. We can see it but he can't. The end goal judge was quite

:51:19. > :51:23.adamant that the try had been scored. There is another knock-down

:51:24. > :51:27.from Watsonians, from the kick-off. Trying to re-gain possession. This

:51:28. > :51:33.is going to be a great 14 minutes of seven aside rugby. Melrose want to

:51:34. > :51:36.stay in this game, they've got to tighten up their kick-offs. That is

:51:37. > :51:53.two very slack ones so far. Mark Bertrand polices him very

:51:54. > :52:03.closely. Miller, Godsmark. Into trouble and then ran out of it

:52:04. > :52:11.again. Hess. Colvin. A wriggle from Godsmark outside on the left. And

:52:12. > :52:19.the referee is bringing them all the way back for some misdemeanour, a

:52:20. > :52:26.high tackle. I wonder if we can see that again, but that was the saviour

:52:27. > :52:30.for Melrose. That would have gone the length, one would have thought.

:52:31. > :52:40.A high tackle. All the same, penalty, ball to Melrose. Colvin is

:52:41. > :52:47.the mastermind of all the attacks. A change of direction. This is George

:52:48. > :52:53.Taylor. Taylor is away. Taylor is away for Melrose, the posts. A great

:52:54. > :52:59.try from the youngster. This is going from end to end, the pendulum

:53:00. > :53:02.is swinging back and forward, and George Taylor has got Melrose back

:53:03. > :53:08.into this game and these folks on the terraces are delighted. They

:53:09. > :53:15.certainly are and so are we in the commentary box to see them going

:53:16. > :53:23.well. Well done, good try. Came at the right time. Good, strong

:53:24. > :53:27.running. Coming up to half time, seven minutes each way. They will

:53:28. > :53:34.play a ten minutes each way final. Richard Milne popped it over, it is

:53:35. > :53:47.12-12. Here is the man who converted that try. He just has a look at the

:53:48. > :53:54.opposition and then sizes them up. The sidestep was magical and that is

:53:55. > :54:01.brilliant rugby! They should replay that time and time again because the

:54:02. > :54:09.sidestep is out of this world. Going to make the most of the opportunity

:54:10. > :54:15.there. I think we missed the sidestep, just before that. Still a

:54:16. > :54:20.lot to do but he comes across well. Well done, over in the corner.

:54:21. > :54:24.Fights will try just before half-time. Lovely try, the

:54:25. > :54:30.opposition could do nothing once he sidestepped here. He has had a thing

:54:31. > :54:35.with this left-hand goalpost today, he has put the ball past it several

:54:36. > :54:37.times but he won't be too bothered about that at the moment because the

:54:38. > :54:44.scoreboard shows that as a result of this try, Melrose are leading at the

:54:45. > :54:48.turn by 17-12. There it is, look at that. Like a ballet dancer.

:54:49. > :54:55.Beautiful balance and over he goes. What a score. There we are. They

:54:56. > :55:01.needed the breather at half-time after all that effort, do they not?

:55:02. > :55:10.They certainly do. Very important to score just before half-time. I have

:55:11. > :55:19.to say, the two points could be vital. At the moment Melrose are one

:55:20. > :55:24.point in front, the home team. It could be vital at the end of the

:55:25. > :55:29.second half. The lad who has impressed me with the convergence

:55:30. > :55:35.today, he has scored a lot of very difficult ones. Mark Bertrand,

:55:36. > :55:39.number three, just off to the writer of the shop, he has been one of the

:55:40. > :55:55.main players, strong runner, good tackler. The cat that backdrop, is

:55:56. > :56:00.that not just perfect? They have had a lot of hard games and they are

:56:01. > :56:05.certainly in a hard game against Watsonians at the moment. They are

:56:06. > :56:10.in deed, and Watsonians to get the game under why and he does just

:56:11. > :56:17.that. Almost caught, there. Goodness me. That was Euan Miller, who was

:56:18. > :56:26.right in for that one. He was almost clean through. Certainly, you can't

:56:27. > :56:29.allow teams to come forward and get confidence like that. Melrose have

:56:30. > :56:33.been a bit disappointing in the way they have challenged and received

:56:34. > :56:40.kick-offs. That was just unfortunate, that knock-on.

:56:41. > :56:48.What has he got left in the tank after that fabulous last try? Not

:56:49. > :56:56.much at the moment. It is the week kick past. Ali Miller, only 80

:56:57. > :57:04.metres to go, lad! Can you do it? Let's just watch. Continuity, here.

:57:05. > :57:12.Melrose playing some very good rugby. It is Watsonians who get the

:57:13. > :57:22.penalty and away they go again, Ferguson. Drummond. The big guy who

:57:23. > :57:30.opened the scoring. Chalmers, Andrew Chalmers. Rory Drummond, big Fifer.

:57:31. > :57:42.That is a big knock-on by Rory steel. Having a little tete a tete.

:57:43. > :57:45.That's not allowed in today's game but it's nice to see sometimes

:57:46. > :57:53.because it means quite a lot. All handbags at dawn. It's funny when

:57:54. > :57:58.you see all the wee boys come flying in from the outside. I could imagine

:57:59. > :58:08.they would go the other way, but the game resumes. Colvin, Godsmark. What

:58:09. > :58:13.can he do out here? He's being policed very carefully by Scott

:58:14. > :58:18.McKean. Milne doesn't have the pace of yesteryear but he has got the

:58:19. > :58:26.head. Here is Miller, he's got the lungs, he's got the engine! So has

:58:27. > :58:30.Evan Hess! Look at this for Melrose. This gets them further ahead. That

:58:31. > :58:38.is a great try, engineered by Richard Milne but finished off by

:58:39. > :58:43.Evan Hess.. Brilliant domination. Worked well in the first half and he

:58:44. > :58:51.has done well in the second half. He is finding the gaps well. You find

:58:52. > :58:55.there wasn't enough space on the outside, cutting inside, off his

:58:56. > :58:59.wing. Being able to talk to each other. The combination was an

:59:00. > :59:06.classic here. He knew exactly where he was and it was just an easy run

:59:07. > :59:11.in. To plenty of time for Watsonians to get back into this game. Richard

:59:12. > :59:19.Milne popped over the conversion. You can see at the top of your

:59:20. > :59:26.screen, Melrose lead 24-12. Melrose last won disc in 2011 when they beat

:59:27. > :59:34.Hamilton in the final, 35-17. -- last won this competition. Scott

:59:35. > :59:35.McKean, the flyer, up the left touchline. Back infield. Cagey staff

:59:36. > :59:47.at the moment. This boy is a good player, Ewan

:59:48. > :59:57.Miller. Can he off-load and get it back? There it is. Fergusson, along

:59:58. > :00:03.the line. McKean with the sidestep, look at this. That is one of the

:00:04. > :00:08.great glories of seven when you see somebody with a burst of pace taking

:00:09. > :00:13.it away from the defence. Credit where it is due, you could see the

:00:14. > :00:17.turn of speed he had, but credit where it is due, space in the

:00:18. > :00:23.Melrose defence but they managed to get a handle on. Nice sidestep then

:00:24. > :00:30.the afterburners go on. That is what happens when you have player behind

:00:31. > :00:33.the first line of defence. Even just enough to slow him down allowed the

:00:34. > :00:40.rest of the Melrose team to grab a hold of him and not allow him to

:00:41. > :00:48.play the ball backwards. It was McKean, number seven, he scored a

:00:49. > :00:53.hat-trick in the final at Galashiels sevens last weekend when Watsonians

:00:54. > :01:02.beat Jed in the final. Plenty of pace and Gyle. And Melrose, Madre

:01:03. > :01:09.McAndrew, number 14 on the back of his Jersey. Melrose will be quite

:01:10. > :01:13.delighted, there has been a bit of an issue getting the ball into the

:01:14. > :01:21.scrum because the clock keeps ticking.

:01:22. > :01:30.This is a great run by Fergusson and that might be an even greater

:01:31. > :01:44.tackle. Did Fergusson get it down? The referee has given the try.

:01:45. > :01:53.Conversion to come. 17-24. Well made from a mistake from Melrose. I gave

:01:54. > :02:03.them the kiss of death. And the conversion goes over from wide out

:02:04. > :02:07.on the touchline, 19-24. One try between the sides. This lad

:02:08. > :02:16.Fergusson is strong and fast and good enough to beat the last gasp

:02:17. > :02:18.tackle. Here come Watsonians again. Dangerous times for Melrose, what

:02:19. > :02:47.can the home side produce? here they come again. Fergusson out

:02:48. > :02:57.to McKean. This guy can run, Rory Steele. So can this man, Bertram.

:02:58. > :03:06.He's away. He's in for what could be the killer blow. 24-24 with the

:03:07. > :03:15.conversion to come. Bertram coming on as a replacement, big, powerful

:03:16. > :03:19.lad, strong runner. Good play by Watsonians, we thought they were out

:03:20. > :03:25.of the game. One little mistake by Melrose let them back in for one try

:03:26. > :03:33.and know they need this very important kick to put them in front.

:03:34. > :03:36.He has pulled it past the uprights. They are into extra time for the

:03:37. > :03:45.first time in any tie this afternoon. 24-24. Five minutes each

:03:46. > :03:49.way. Good interlinking, good playing, we thought he was going to

:03:50. > :03:54.go all the way. Important to make your tackles. Bertram, we thought he

:03:55. > :04:00.would put it down but understood he had to get as close to the posts as

:04:01. > :04:05.he could to make it easier but I'm fortunate late he didn't get it. --

:04:06. > :04:20.unfortunately. Here we are, and minutes rest and

:04:21. > :04:29.then these guys have to do it all again. It's all on a knife edge.

:04:30. > :04:39.These young ladies having a grand time this afternoon. Are they out of

:04:40. > :04:55.your corner of the woods? Sudden death is it? Any score? The game

:04:56. > :05:02.stops. On a knife edge. Bruce Colvin, perhaps kicking it too far.

:05:03. > :05:13.Easy position to Fergusson. Chalmers pops it out. McKean is like a little

:05:14. > :05:18.firefly. Safe hands by Watsonians. Think they might come up this side

:05:19. > :05:21.but they are not entirely sure. Ewan Miller bashing into the opposition

:05:22. > :05:41.and sapping their strength. Then the clever stuff. The ball went out.

:05:42. > :05:45.Knocked forward, penalty. Talking back to the referee saw a scrum

:05:46. > :05:50.becomes a penalty. Language is not tolerated in rugby map that's what

:05:51. > :05:56.happens. If you see a few harsh words to the referee in the wrong

:05:57. > :06:04.manner, penalty. Here come Melrose, remember, first try wins. Melrose

:06:05. > :06:13.slinging the ball around with abandon. Needs a bit longer stud in

:06:14. > :06:19.his boot. I think he's held onto that too long after the tackle. The

:06:20. > :06:27.referee thinks the same. Too long on the ground. Bertram trying to blast

:06:28. > :06:36.his way through. Off your feet, I think they were holding on, down off

:06:37. > :06:46.their feet. What the tie this is. Almost through. Chance for Ewan

:06:47. > :06:54.Miller. This could be the winner for Melrose. Not yet. He's got held up,

:06:55. > :07:03.it is held up. Oh my goodness. What defence by Watsonians. Unbelievable

:07:04. > :07:07.stuff. Very exciting stuff. If you have got a seat you are out of it.

:07:08. > :07:25.Almost there, might have made it himself. Perhaps he should have died

:07:26. > :07:35.to score -- dived. You are getting excited. He is through! That the one

:07:36. > :07:39.which puts Melrose through. They are into the semifinal. Much to the

:07:40. > :07:50.relief of the crowd and the rest of the players. Joy, excitement and

:07:51. > :07:54.relief. Good scrum, solid scrum. Not the best defence from Watsonians at

:07:55. > :08:05.the side of the scrum, well ban that man. Made a little mistake in the

:08:06. > :08:08.first half but made up for it there. Watsonians played well last week,

:08:09. > :08:21.played good rugby but Melrose are through to the next round.

:08:22. > :08:29.A very happy home support in Melrose after that result, sensational

:08:30. > :08:34.stuff. Melrose through against Watsonians. Everyone is happy, look

:08:35. > :08:42.at this, loving their day as are we here on BBC Two Scotland. Heriot's

:08:43. > :08:55.against Edinburgh Accies the final match of the quarterfinals.

:08:56. > :09:05.After this it could be two Borders teams because Edinburgh playing

:09:06. > :09:12.right to left against Heriots. Lazy kick. That was some game wasn't it?

:09:13. > :09:15.And believable, jack Fergusson will have been disappointed to miss that

:09:16. > :09:24.last-ditch conversion but great credit to Melrose. This will be

:09:25. > :09:28.interesting. Having worked at the Thais previously would have too

:09:29. > :09:36.fancy Edinburgh but anything can happen. -- having looked at the

:09:37. > :09:37.games previously you would have to fancy Edinburgh but anything can

:09:38. > :09:48.happen. They are going to try and get

:09:49. > :09:49.through this Edinburgh defence, the professionals on the right, the

:09:50. > :10:03.amateurs the left. Trying to get past Andrew Strauss,

:10:04. > :10:06.the Centre for Edinburgh but a little break by Tom Wilson, the

:10:07. > :10:17.captain. Switches inside. Edinburgh Accies be looking for

:10:18. > :10:31.possession, good little pass out to the left from Mulligan.

:10:32. > :10:40.Both teams sizing each other up. Yes, just a bit of physicality in

:10:41. > :10:43.the breakdown, Heriots having to commit players at the breakdown,

:10:44. > :10:50.Edinburgh comfortably defending with one player there. Applying the

:10:51. > :10:57.pressure and a mistake by Heriots leads to Edinburgh possession with

:10:58. > :11:07.Sam Beard. Strauss to the highly capable Turner, the hooker.

:11:08. > :11:25.Edinburgh are just looking to smooth, they have an extra gear.

:11:26. > :11:30.Yes, and the skill set as you'd expect from is excellent. Josh

:11:31. > :11:41.Turner going in at scrum-half, he's normally hooker, Damien Hoyland back

:11:42. > :11:46.inside. When you see it played like that it looks very simple but it

:11:47. > :11:49.needs all the skills to come together. But Edinburgh at the

:11:50. > :11:52.moment just have better skill set, more physicality and the

:11:53. > :11:57.professionalism is coming to the forefront. It will be a good team

:11:58. > :12:00.who give Edinburgh are real challenge. As you have said all

:12:01. > :12:05.afternoon and it's about stamina and speed. You can see the arm strength

:12:06. > :12:10.of these Edinburgh boys as well. Full-time professionals. Dummy from

:12:11. > :12:33.the big South African. Wilson, to Carmichael. Good scramble

:12:34. > :12:44.defence from Edinburgh. This is a good break. Tom Wilson, the captain.

:12:45. > :12:53.It will be a penalty. Long way to counterattack. Beard stepping

:12:54. > :12:59.inside. Turner goes ahead of him. Damien Hoyland. He is told the goal

:13:00. > :13:06.left but gives it right. -- he's told to go left. Forward pass by

:13:07. > :13:25.Edinburgh but a good break by Wilson down the touchline. Nathan. To what

:13:26. > :13:30.extent would Edinburgh, would be relaxed in a game like this thinking

:13:31. > :13:35.they should beat Heriots? They might be a little bit like that, Heriots

:13:36. > :13:39.will be well up for an opportunity to play against professionals.

:13:40. > :13:43.Edinburgh shouldn't be too lax that they will be thinking if we just

:13:44. > :13:49.play our game we will be better than they are. Just like this. Good take

:13:50. > :14:02.by third. Turner playing scrum-half. The ball right to left. Damien

:14:03. > :14:15.Hoyland. Good turnover by Heriots. That was a bit too lax. You can see

:14:16. > :14:24.the tempo can get into the game. Great defence by Heriot's, great

:14:25. > :14:25.turnover. Edinburgh making it difficult for Heriots. It will be a

:14:26. > :14:44.scrum. There has been some great rugby,

:14:45. > :14:56.Edinburgh is coming from 17-0 down to beat Ayr. Some excellent rugby.

:14:57. > :15:06.We are now into the business end of the game. Heriots pinned on their

:15:07. > :15:13.online. It's like Edinburgh have them in at struggle hold. They have

:15:14. > :15:23.to think how do they get away from this part of the pitch. That is well

:15:24. > :15:30.played by Strauss. Was it Strauss? Dean. Just shows you the

:15:31. > :15:32.physicality, Dean street in over the ball and cannot be moved. --

:15:33. > :15:58.Straiton. He's shown the way. Did he get the

:15:59. > :16:05.ball down? I am not sure he did. He was shown outside and he was always

:16:06. > :16:10.going to take it. No try. He was shown the way and he took it but

:16:11. > :16:16.what happened? He has got the ball in what you would class as the wrong

:16:17. > :16:20.hands and it was knocked down. For a professional rugby player, that is

:16:21. > :16:25.critical, not acceptable, to make a mistake like that. Just needed to

:16:26. > :16:31.transfer it into his left hand and he would have scored. Edinburgh

:16:32. > :16:36.living dangerously here at Greenyards, this is Melrose sevens,

:16:37. > :16:39.glad to have you with us. The Edinburgh team getting some words of

:16:40. > :16:46.encouragement from one of the great sevens players, Roddy Grant. He's a

:16:47. > :16:52.great guy, I had him as my captain of my squad, he was with me at the

:16:53. > :16:55.Commonwealth Games in 2014. Great person to have around. Really

:16:56. > :17:04.genuine and a real sadness that he's had to retire through injury. But

:17:05. > :17:07.he's turned his hand to coaching. He will be bringing his experience to

:17:08. > :17:13.the forefront to those players who are trying to quickly transition

:17:14. > :17:18.from fifteens into sevens. Cannot be many places in the world that are as

:17:19. > :17:26.beautiful as this. You have an event with a great sport like sevens in a

:17:27. > :17:31.natural amphitheatre surrounded by hills. And you know this is where

:17:32. > :17:35.the game was invented, it is special because this is where it all

:17:36. > :17:39.started. It's a wonderful event, when you travel the world as I was

:17:40. > :17:43.fortunate enough to do and you speak to other coaches and players they

:17:44. > :17:47.all talk about Melrose. They are all aware of the history of the game and

:17:48. > :17:54.it's a wonderful event. The cavalry is on bread-and-butter. -- is on for

:17:55. > :18:11.Edinburgh. Just extensive stride length. That's

:18:12. > :18:14.good defence, but if Edinburgh get beaten in this match it's the

:18:15. > :18:19.biggest upset because they look casual. Probably trying to do a

:18:20. > :18:24.little too much themselves rather than operating as a team. Credit to

:18:25. > :18:33.Heriots they are making the one-on-one tackles and making life

:18:34. > :18:45.difficult for them. Runs right into Strauss and is dumped back words.

:18:46. > :18:49.Turnover. Good play. Inside two Fowles, eight minutes gone he

:18:50. > :18:54.doubled the lead. Edinburgh gone through a quiet patch but when they

:18:55. > :18:55.have enough notice to turn the ball over they are going to be hard to

:18:56. > :19:19.beat. I think those posts to the right,

:19:20. > :19:26.might be an optical illusion because people keep missing. Dean inside to

:19:27. > :19:31.Fowles. You keep talking about the inside pass being hard to defend.

:19:32. > :19:34.It's where defence ten to get lazy. It's easy to say that if you

:19:35. > :19:37.disconnect because you've done hard work around the breakdown and you

:19:38. > :19:45.don't keep working the space be there. Nine minutes gone, penalty to

:19:46. > :19:52.Heriots. They have not had much attacking time, Heriots.

:19:53. > :20:02.Good tackle by Damien Hoyland. Carmichael. Damien Hoyland have

:20:03. > :20:06.handed off by Johnny Ray but he's back there battling. The ball is out

:20:07. > :20:16.says the referee, Edinburgh have lined up to the left. Strauss

:20:17. > :20:21.inside. I think Fowles has played well today, he has been everywhere.

:20:22. > :20:29.Played well last week in Gala as well. He has played sevens

:20:30. > :20:35.previously. He's got a good game understanding and enough pace to

:20:36. > :20:40.have an impact. Turnover ball in the white channel, Damien Hoyland making

:20:41. > :20:44.a great tackle, back to his feet, Dean wins the ball, a couple of

:20:45. > :20:50.passes and suddenly they are scoring under the posts. Edinburgh are just

:20:51. > :20:57.comfortable, too much power. Everyone of them can do that, the

:20:58. > :21:00.in. It's the same as we saw last year with Glasgow Warriors. The

:21:01. > :21:06.physical elements of the game, being able to win the battles. That's an

:21:07. > :21:11.incredible kicking style, he just punches it through and he gets

:21:12. > :21:21.height. It in the perfect location where you know it will be hard work.

:21:22. > :21:28.Not all sides as the referee. -- not offside says the referee. I think

:21:29. > :21:33.that was a surprise for the player as well. You talk about the restart

:21:34. > :21:41.with Nathan. We will see it here, great ball drop, head down over the

:21:42. > :21:45.ball, gets his right foot straight back down and it shows you the angle

:21:46. > :21:49.he has got, getting his foot fully under the ball, concentrate on

:21:50. > :21:55.getting the height rather than the length which is great. Edinburgh

:21:56. > :22:02.comfortably going through their routines, 17-0 ahead. Heriots will

:22:03. > :22:07.be on the ball, they look like if they could mount a couple of attacks

:22:08. > :22:10.they might give Edinburgh fright. The Edinburgh manager will be

:22:11. > :22:13.disappointed with them losing that line-out. Wilson on the ball for

:22:14. > :22:22.Heriots, he's been very influential for them, Johnny Ray. Pressure from

:22:23. > :22:25.Edinburgh. Making the mistake. A lot of intent from Heriots in terms of

:22:26. > :22:37.what they are trying to do but they are looking up and Edinburgh are not

:22:38. > :22:41.giving them the opportunities. Scrum for Edinburgh. Fowles to put the

:22:42. > :22:45.ball in and they will be happy to run down the clock. We have had a

:22:46. > :22:50.few years were the weather has been terrible but today we been very

:22:51. > :22:56.lucky. Damien Hoyland. He can probably skin most of these players

:22:57. > :23:01.if he wants to. He's away again. Three or four hand office. Up to the

:23:02. > :23:06.five metre line, Dean providing forward impetus. Damien Hoyland

:23:07. > :23:14.around the corner and finishing off the movie started. Plenty of speed.

:23:15. > :23:21.Damien has been playing a lot of seasons on the World Series,

:23:22. > :23:26.prolific scorer and he's come back, positioned well into the fifteens

:23:27. > :23:34.and using his power and pace. Has the ball in the right hand this

:23:35. > :23:41.time, Dean takes it on, Damien has enough understanding to speak around

:23:42. > :23:49.the blindside. And here's this kicking style. Wind left-to-right as

:23:50. > :23:54.we look. That is different. It's that punching kick to get the

:23:55. > :24:03.height. You can see when he takes the restart how much he gets his

:24:04. > :24:08.foot underneath the ball. Trying harder to get some length, here we

:24:09. > :24:11.go with the restart. Beautiful height, great restart. We can

:24:12. > :24:18.promise people some great games to come. Two semifinals and the final

:24:19. > :24:28.coming up. Edinburgh may be looking to put icing on the cake. Dean. Good

:24:29. > :24:36.tackle. Picked up by Smith. Heriots trying to attack from long range.

:24:37. > :24:40.Johnny Ray. Could be man and ball. You don't want to expose your ribs

:24:41. > :24:49.with that kind of pass but he's done well.

:24:50. > :25:01.And that brings that to the end, good game, we have some cracking

:25:02. > :25:07.matches to come. Things will heat up, we have three excellent games

:25:08. > :25:16.still to come at the wonderful Melrose sevens.

:25:17. > :25:51.Fantastic stuff, brilliant, Edinburgh looking really good. Some

:25:52. > :25:56.of the stories from the quarterfinals, Jed-Forest knocking

:25:57. > :25:59.out, the little village knocking out the country, fantastic. Real drama

:26:00. > :26:09.for Melrose getting through. But let's talk about Jed, out of five

:26:10. > :26:12.men at one point against Belgium. You mentioned that it's great to see

:26:13. > :26:19.the town of Jedburgh coming through against the country. This man came

:26:20. > :26:26.on, I asked where he was in the first half, he wasn't on which is

:26:27. > :26:31.why we didn't see him but when he came on what presents he had. What a

:26:32. > :26:35.turn of speed. Being critical he has the ball in the wrong hand but he

:26:36. > :26:40.had the confidence and pace to go outside. Came on at the right time

:26:41. > :26:45.and scored two important tries. But talking about the yellow cards, I

:26:46. > :26:48.don't think we've ever seen two from the same team. Belgium must be

:26:49. > :26:52.kicking themselves because they should have made more of that than

:26:53. > :26:58.the dead. Melrose, the hosts are through as well. Watsonians had it

:26:59. > :27:02.in their hands to go through into the semifinal and just didn't take

:27:03. > :27:09.it. This is a great try just before the end of the match, talk us

:27:10. > :27:15.through it. This was the last 30 seconds of the game, very important

:27:16. > :27:21.for what Sony ends, -- for Watsonians. The player got as close

:27:22. > :27:31.to the posts as he could in scoring the try and they are, the sweeper,

:27:32. > :27:38.this was extra time, sudden death. Great nailbiter but Melrose through

:27:39. > :27:41.which is great for the home crowd. It is Accies against Jedforest, the

:27:42. > :27:52.first of the semifinals. There should be a cracker. COMMENTATOR:

:27:53. > :28:02.Ready to get this first half underway. The first semifinal. Ian

:28:03. > :28:14.Chisholm gets it. Trying to get away on the outside. Deciding better of

:28:15. > :28:19.it. He's a bit of a sprinter. Lewis Young does the running, Harkness

:28:20. > :28:29.gives it to Gregor Young. In at the corner. The first try of this first

:28:30. > :28:36.semifinal. Jed go 5-0 up. This side of the draw is interesting because

:28:37. > :28:41.this is the two, Accies against Jed, I think if Jed can feed the likes of

:28:42. > :28:46.Harkness they can win this match. The breakdown has been good for Jed

:28:47. > :28:51.led it was from Selkirk early on, some good players. I think these

:28:52. > :28:53.games are important as the superstar games, the club games are what makes

:28:54. > :29:03.Melrose. Chisholm was just wide to the left

:29:04. > :29:11.with a conversion attempt, so five points to nil. Chris doing the

:29:12. > :29:16.running and setting up the try. The beauty was that he kept it alive, he

:29:17. > :29:21.didn't wait for the runner. He chipped it back and then Harkness

:29:22. > :29:25.was alive to it. It is that whole thing of keeping the ball alive.

:29:26. > :29:31.When you see that, the young boys with pace, they have got genuine

:29:32. > :29:38.pace. Lovely because the ball was thrown in crooked, so they will go

:29:39. > :29:42.for the scrum and Jed will have the put-in.

:29:43. > :29:53.Here it is, right on the Accies 22 metres line. Jed got through to this

:29:54. > :29:57.stage by beating Celtic in round two and then they had a ding-dong battle

:29:58. > :30:05.with the Belgians in the quarterfinals which they won. Accies

:30:06. > :30:12.Pete Gala in the quarterfinal. This is Ian Chisholm. Feeding it out to

:30:13. > :30:22.Lewis Young. Chisholm can go as well. Young again. It is good the

:30:23. > :30:30.way they keep width. Touchline to touchline. Robert Hogg. Usually a

:30:31. > :30:36.centre or a winger, but he played sevens. Penalty against Chisholm

:30:37. > :30:39.there, just handing the ball back in that situation. I think sometimes

:30:40. > :30:43.teams would rather give away the penalty than give away the try

:30:44. > :30:48.because you can always get the ball back. I like the way Jed play.

:30:49. > :30:56.Left-wing, right-wing, in the blink of an eye. It's great the way they

:30:57. > :31:08.transfer the ball. Gregor Young gets caught. The Accies in very quickly.

:31:09. > :31:13.Hanging on, Jed come away again. Long ball. Guillen can't take it.

:31:14. > :31:26.Harkness might be there, he is strong enough. Just held short of

:31:27. > :31:32.that, that is the five metre line. Accies are having to do all the

:31:33. > :31:38.defending. That is try number two for Jed. The important thing is what

:31:39. > :31:41.you don't see off the ball. The defence has to go wide and if

:31:42. > :31:48.someone wants to go straight, they have to run straight through. It

:31:49. > :31:56.could have been ape at, the gap opens up, in you go. And Lewis Young

:31:57. > :32:00.pops over the conversion. So, Jed are 12-0 ahead against Edinburgh

:32:01. > :32:04.Accies, who haven't really got into this game so far. Here we are with

:32:05. > :32:12.some four and a half minutes of the game played. Chisholm skips through

:32:13. > :32:16.and it's a lovely breakthrough. However, having scored the try, you

:32:17. > :32:20.have to then restart the game and you have got to win the ball back.

:32:21. > :32:29.Lewis Young tried to drop it on the ten. That's all right, that's in

:32:30. > :32:31.touch, and that is an Academical florin.

:32:32. > :32:44.The referee did not allow Jamie to take a quick throw in, there. A wee

:32:45. > :32:46.bit pedantic about that, what do you reckon? I just remember his father

:32:47. > :32:57.walking out in 1990, grand slam. McGlashan. Going along the line, the

:32:58. > :33:07.big winger, Paterson. Look at him go. This is more like it from the

:33:08. > :33:14.Accies. They have had a bit of the ball now. Chased by Gregor Young. A

:33:15. > :33:19.fight for possession, you see. They have to put the tackling and then go

:33:20. > :33:23.for the ball. These teams are both good at holding their width. Look

:33:24. > :33:28.how wide they are. That opens up the midfield for this kind of thing.

:33:29. > :33:31.This is clashing! He was almost through. Blenheim, tackled by Gregor

:33:32. > :33:42.Young. Max love again from scrum-half. This

:33:43. > :33:49.will be a try from the big glad. Oh! He got it, just. Five points from

:33:50. > :33:52.the Accies. I think one of the big differences this year is the

:33:53. > :34:02.breakdown technique of all these teams. Look at Jamie Sole taking out

:34:03. > :34:06.players in front of him. Every team today has been good at the

:34:07. > :34:10.breakdown. They have all been capable. Stevie Gemmill talks about

:34:11. > :34:14.keeping the width, and all these teams now are keeping men wide and

:34:15. > :34:20.moving the ball. Just looking at these players, they are all

:34:21. > :34:33.struggling. It has been a long, hard day for them. They are tired. This

:34:34. > :34:41.is Accies's fourth tie, but only Jed's third because they had a bye

:34:42. > :34:48.into Round 2. The sun is just dipping away a bit. A little breeze

:34:49. > :34:56.freshening up. Up goes Gregor Young. Love gets the ball out. Here goes

:34:57. > :35:00.Melvin Fat, Splash in again. He is the orchestrator, the guy who makes

:35:01. > :35:09.it all happen, keeps everyone in June. So strong. Harkness will have

:35:10. > :35:13.to get him. Chance here again, lovely running. Alex loved up the

:35:14. > :35:18.touchline, they chase between Chris Gillon and Alex loved and I think

:35:19. > :35:22.Guillen got the touch, so they will go back to the 22. That is half-time

:35:23. > :35:26.and it just shows you when the players go from end to end and there

:35:27. > :35:34.is a lot happening, time goes past very quickly. This is a good game

:35:35. > :35:38.too. Still close, 12-5. I think that Jed look as though they have got

:35:39. > :35:42.more in the tank, haven't they? They've got a bit more in terms of

:35:43. > :35:50.overall gameplay, but Edinburgh Accies, with the likes of Jamie

:35:51. > :35:55.Sole, they have got plenty of speed around. Every game today, there

:35:56. > :36:00.hasn't really been a game that has been a runaway victory, has there?

:36:01. > :36:05.Edinburgh might be the only team. But Jed beat Belgium. Some good

:36:06. > :36:08.games. Fraser Harkness, the number three. He doesn't have the pace he

:36:09. > :36:15.had when he was at his peak, because he is in his very early 30s now.

:36:16. > :36:22.But... I think the first time I saw him play was for fifteens. He could

:36:23. > :36:29.make people fall over just by looking at a different way. He could

:36:30. > :36:31.have the ball in his hands, look one way and they would just drop. Like

:36:32. > :36:47.camp -- like Campese. A very busy and

:36:48. > :36:55.engaged crowd here at the Greenyards fore this Melrose Sevens. I wonder

:36:56. > :37:04.if he is thinking, did I start all this off? Wow. Did Gala steal the

:37:05. > :37:10.posts? Here is the kick-off in this first semifinal and again

:37:11. > :37:21.Academicals have won the ball. He is a powerful lad. Harkness tries to

:37:22. > :37:27.get up but he won't catch Melvin Far, or will he? Guillen is the

:37:28. > :37:35.sweeper at the back. Lovely take. Almost an interception. Still the

:37:36. > :37:41.Academicals have it. Melvin Farr again. This is a chance for max

:37:42. > :37:46.love. He is in in the corner. Good try for Edinburgh Accies. Very good

:37:47. > :37:52.try. They just decided let's play the original couple of breaks. I

:37:53. > :38:01.think that is Peter Drennan's son, he used to play for Accies. This is

:38:02. > :38:06.a nice try. It goes left-to-right. Clever little outside break. The

:38:07. > :38:11.last pass just blocking the defender. Here is Alex clashing and

:38:12. > :38:18.he is wide out on the touchline. It see if he gets this. It's not bad,

:38:19. > :38:23.just going to crawl past the right-hand upright. No further

:38:24. > :38:31.points there from the Academicals. 10-12 is the scoreline. Can you

:38:32. > :38:35.imagine what it must be like to do all this running all day and then

:38:36. > :38:44.take on either Melrose or Edinburgh, that is the next semifinal. You have

:38:45. > :38:45.to be hugely fit. Here is Alex clashing, former Scotland sevens

:38:46. > :39:11.player of course. -- Alex Glashan. Back east just

:39:12. > :39:20.stood still -- Accies stood still and lead Jed do all the fancy stuff.

:39:21. > :39:32.Brilliant tackle by Paterson. He is a tough nut. Young goes in and gets

:39:33. > :39:39.it away. Hogg again. Hogg is in for the try. Robert Hogg gets the score.

:39:40. > :39:47.Jed get onto it harder than Edinburgh Accies. He went through

:39:48. > :39:54.between two defenders. Half tackle, got up and then kept going. At the

:39:55. > :39:59.moment it looks as though Jed are hitting the gain line harder and

:40:00. > :40:07.just hammering it. Lewis Young stroking over the conversion,

:40:08. > :40:13.another couple of points. 19-10. He was half tackle and then decided he

:40:14. > :40:19.was not half tackle. That is a bullet of a handoff.

:40:20. > :40:27.I think he has played his part in this game, he is subbed off. Lewis

:40:28. > :40:34.Young gets the game under way. Another of these kicks, which are

:40:35. > :40:41.kind of lazy but they are a sign of fatigue as well. The wind is going

:40:42. > :40:46.left-to-right. He just misjudged it enough to make it come right back on

:40:47. > :40:51.him. Accies will want to score from this. You want to score when you get

:40:52. > :41:00.possession of the ball. Chisholm puts in a vital tackle on Melvin

:41:01. > :41:06.Farr. In goes Lewis Young! Look at the pace of this laddie, right

:41:07. > :41:12.through the Academical midfield. He just left them for dead and he

:41:13. > :41:18.scores another try put Jed. 24-10. At the moment it looks as though Jed

:41:19. > :41:25.are set for the final. This is just... You don't want to criticise

:41:26. > :41:34.players but Melvin Farr went by himself, made a break by himself and

:41:35. > :41:39.then a good appeal from the Jed players... It is a good piece of

:41:40. > :41:43.play by Melvin Farr, but he got caught. For five players saying

:41:44. > :41:52.penalty, rest, penalty Camara. Tap and go. That is very good play. You

:41:53. > :41:56.hear the crowds roar as the sprinters go through. People love to

:41:57. > :42:03.see the pace of these players. Chisholm gets the job of getting the

:42:04. > :42:10.game under way. Gregor Law has come on the Jed. A number seven on his

:42:11. > :42:19.back or is it a one? I'm never sure with these modern numbers. Max love

:42:20. > :42:32.trying to come up this side. Melvin Farr, great weaving. Lovely run

:42:33. > :42:37.again by Jamie Sole. So powerful. Evidence is there, but Alex Glashan

:42:38. > :42:46.goes all the way for a lovely try for Accies. It is that width, isn't

:42:47. > :42:54.it? Alex Glashan saying get back, get back, get back. He's trying to

:42:55. > :43:03.get the game moving on. Great play. They've taken the ball to the right

:43:04. > :43:07.wing. Two big passes. He leaves the open space and Alex Glashan goes

:43:08. > :43:13.through. I think the game has changed over the years. I agree

:43:14. > :43:19.completely, there is more of that and less of what we used to call the

:43:20. > :43:28.jiggery-pokery. Everybody can ruck, everybody can tackle. There is Tom

:43:29. > :43:36.Drennan, and Jamie Sole on the far side of him. The scrummage is an

:43:37. > :43:47.-- and Accies put in. Guillen goes in and pesters the life out of Alex

:43:48. > :43:52.Glashan. Guillen again doing very well. Chisholm come out it goes to

:43:53. > :43:58.Lewis Young. There is the wee fellow, going through. He is away

:43:59. > :44:06.again. Rate piece of running. Oh! Fabulous stuff. Great running.

:44:07. > :44:15.Chisholm took the final pass from Craig Howard, but that was great.

:44:16. > :44:21.Again, that is all to do with keeping width. He came back in, the

:44:22. > :44:26.cut through the middle, and that is the end of the game. There we are,

:44:27. > :44:31.so it's Jedforest to go through into the first semifinal. Here is that

:44:32. > :44:38.last try again, Craig Cowing getting it through to Chisholm and he goes

:44:39. > :44:49.in behind the posts. Jed through to the final. We are here with the Jed

:44:50. > :44:52.coach, Ross Goodfellow. You said right from the start you were not

:44:53. > :44:57.here to make up the numbers and now you're in the final, you must be

:44:58. > :44:58.delighted. I'm delighted. We still not clicked yet but we've done what

:44:59. > :45:09.we need to do to reach the final. Your team have got one more per big

:45:10. > :45:14.performance in them? We've done what we needed to do but I think we can

:45:15. > :45:21.play well again in the final. My goodness, who will he play, Melrose

:45:22. > :45:26.or Edinburgh? Stevie Gemmill here in the studio. Delighted to have you

:45:27. > :45:29.with us. Melrose against Edinburgh, Edinburgh super strong but Melrose

:45:30. > :45:36.they showed amazing resilience in the game. Rate character to come

:45:37. > :45:39.back and win it in extra time and it will be interesting to see how much

:45:40. > :45:43.that has taken out of them for the next game. They will come out all

:45:44. > :45:49.guns blazing a big crowd, home advantage. In 2011 you were here and

:45:50. > :45:53.it was a great victory and the place went absolutely wild. Do you think

:45:54. > :45:57.they have it within them to beat the pro players of Edinburgh in this

:45:58. > :46:00.semifinal. And what I've seen, it will be difficult for them to do

:46:01. > :46:05.that. Don't take anything away, it's a home game for them at that will

:46:06. > :46:08.incentivise them 20% or 30%. The crowd will be behind them because

:46:09. > :46:13.they will be the underdogs in this game, without a shadow of a doubt.

:46:14. > :46:19.They are here for a reason, because they are winning their games, but it

:46:20. > :46:25.will be a pretty big game and a hard game for them. Melrose knocked out

:46:26. > :46:31.by Germany who got into the final against Glasgow Warriors. Today they

:46:32. > :46:35.play in the semifinal as well. Bill and John are still in the commentary

:46:36. > :46:42.box. COMMENTATOR: The second semifinal,

:46:43. > :46:46.this for a place in the final of the 127th playing of the Melrose sevens.

:46:47. > :46:51.They would meet Jedforest. Richard Milne, with ball in hand. Waiting

:46:52. > :47:04.for the queue to get this game going. Some very fast runners in the

:47:05. > :47:10.Melrose team. And off we go. They win the ball back. Baird. This is

:47:11. > :47:15.Highlanders. Highland is like an express train compare to some of

:47:16. > :47:20.these amateur players. Melrose didn't put anyone in the rucks

:47:21. > :47:29.either. Was that a knock-on on Strauss? Yes, it was. Gets a bit of

:47:30. > :47:35.a jeer from the crowd for that. If Melrose win this, it's a big upset.

:47:36. > :47:38.Let's not beat around the bush. Edinburgh should win this, the

:47:39. > :47:40.professionals. I think everyone will be cheering on Melrose to try to

:47:41. > :47:56.beat the city slickers. Here we go. Look at this, into the

:47:57. > :48:01.corner! What a score for Melrose. Have they got it down in time? That

:48:02. > :48:10.was a great piece of running. Has he done himself an injury? Concern on

:48:11. > :48:16.the face of Richard Milne, but that was great stuff. He took the

:48:17. > :48:25.Edinburgh sevens specialist on the outside. He goes to the outside.

:48:26. > :48:30.That is an incredible try. That is a statement of intent by Melrose. This

:48:31. > :48:36.could be an incredible conversion, if Richard Milne puts it over. But

:48:37. > :48:42.he is swinging across his body a bit rather than straight through. First

:48:43. > :48:52.try for Melrose, they lead five points to nil. It was a nice piece

:48:53. > :49:03.of running by Godsmark. Just to check as well. The inside man was

:49:04. > :49:06.vital. Chris Dean wins it. They can't afford to fall off a tackle

:49:07. > :49:12.because if they do, these professionals are so fast they will

:49:13. > :49:15.be through in the blink of an eye. Here is the man they've got to stop.

:49:16. > :49:40.He won't get past Godsmark. It is like the United Nations out

:49:41. > :49:52.there at times. Back it comes to Strauss. This is what they plan to

:49:53. > :49:57.do, just tire them out. That Melrose defensive line are not being tempted

:49:58. > :50:06.up by individuals. That was brilliant linkage by Chris Dean. A

:50:07. > :50:16.super try for Edinburgh, which levels it, once it touches down.

:50:17. > :50:21.Five points each. Good play by Edinburgh. Just been told to put it

:50:22. > :50:22.down. It is deemed bad sportsmanship if you take your time and waste your

:50:23. > :50:33.time. Full-time professional players don't

:50:34. > :50:36.lose too many rucks. All you folks at home can just about catch this

:50:37. > :50:42.ball as it comes to you through your television set. This is a good

:50:43. > :50:51.defensive line. He just made that break and attracted to macro-people.

:50:52. > :50:55.They had the width. It is the ability to keep the ball and move

:50:56. > :50:59.and attract to macro-people and keep it wide and send somebody in.

:51:00. > :51:05.He has been capped seven times for Tonga at international level, a very

:51:06. > :51:18.competent rugby player. Some great running in that previous

:51:19. > :51:22.tie. Here is Godsmark. Well shepherded there and well taken out

:51:23. > :51:26.by Strauss. Strauss doesn't miss many tackles and Rob Dickson, the

:51:27. > :51:33.referee, indicates penalty to Edinburgh. They are shouting holding

:51:34. > :51:41.sir, holding, sir. Attract the referee's attention that the Melrose

:51:42. > :51:46.man is holding the ball. Let's see what Nathan does with this one.

:51:47. > :51:53.Edinburgh have kind of kept the pace quite slow in this one. Risk being,

:51:54. > :52:02.Sam Beard. He thought he was going through. Men out wide. Strong as you

:52:03. > :52:12.like and a sidestep. In for his second. That is 12-5 now that

:52:13. > :52:19.Edinburgh lead. The sound of an aeroplane engine overhead

:52:20. > :52:30.well, he is just too strong. The aeroplane is advertising something.

:52:31. > :52:32.Just as you said Edinburgh taking it slow, they are, but they have got

:52:33. > :52:41.the power to go through you. This man... I think in Edinburgh he

:52:42. > :52:45.is the man that seems to unlock everybody. Breaks with one tackle,

:52:46. > :53:13.goes through the next. Lovely pass by Godsmark. Galbraith

:53:14. > :53:16.is the hooker and here is Milne, the playmaker. That was almost a

:53:17. > :53:26.hospital pass. That's better. Colvin. Almost made Chris Dean go.

:53:27. > :53:34.This is better running. Godsmark on that far side, shouting for the

:53:35. > :53:43.referee. Roddy Grant, the Edinburgh coach looking just a bit concerned.

:53:44. > :53:48.He shouldn't be, they are winning 14-5 and coming up to half-time,

:53:49. > :53:53.they have got the game in hand at this juncture. No one so far has

:53:54. > :53:59.looked like they can unlock Edinburgh. No one has shown the

:54:00. > :54:06.guile and pace. Look at the width they have got. They have got people

:54:07. > :54:13.on the left wing. Look at the holes in the white defence. There is Katoa

:54:14. > :54:20.brilliantly tackled by Richard Milne. Chance to break out of a

:54:21. > :54:26.rather difficult situation. That was George Taylor, the young Scotland

:54:27. > :54:32.under 20s player. Now, what can he do? He has really impressed me, this

:54:33. > :54:41.guy. That is a lovely pass by Colvin. Taylor goes, Colvin is our

:54:42. > :54:48.way! Chased here Strauss won't get him. Good score from Melrose, just

:54:49. > :54:53.under the posts, on the stroke of half-time. It couldn't have come at

:54:54. > :54:59.a better time. Katoa is still down this end of the pitch. He was on the

:55:00. > :55:02.attack, didn't get the try, really a lazy off-load so couldn't get into

:55:03. > :55:06.the defensive line and eventually Melrose were up against six

:55:07. > :55:13.defenders. Katoa is still running back as this conversion is being

:55:14. > :55:16.taken. Only two points between the sides as we reach half-time in this

:55:17. > :55:24.second semifinal, between Melrose and Edinburgh, with Edinburgh

:55:25. > :55:28.leading 14-12. I can't see how Melrose can unlock them but goodness

:55:29. > :55:33.me, they are getting closer and closer. That was a try they scored

:55:34. > :55:36.from their own try line. The one thing about Melrose, they don't give

:55:37. > :55:40.up. We've seen enough games that you know because they are playing this

:55:41. > :55:43.lot on their own territory, they might be half a bunch of

:55:44. > :55:51.professionals but they have got that pride. Just in the left of that shot

:55:52. > :55:55.you can see they are in that white jersey, that looks a long way to run

:55:56. > :56:00.from one end of that field to the other! If anyone has walked on an

:56:01. > :56:05.international pitch before a game, it feels short, 100 metres feels

:56:06. > :56:09.short. But ten minutes into a game, 100 metres can be 100 miles. If

:56:10. > :56:13.someone gives you the ball and says 80 metres to go, your heart sinks.

:56:14. > :56:20.That's why the fitness in the legs of the Edinburgh players really

:56:21. > :56:24.comes into its own. The Melrose coach was giving his chapter and

:56:25. > :56:28.verse there and saying leaving yourselves, play your game. He's

:56:29. > :56:35.doing great things with the under 20s. He's on his way up as a coach.

:56:36. > :56:39.I saw the under 20s play two games, the first against England, when they

:56:40. > :56:45.really wiped them out, they were magnificent. Some very good play.

:56:46. > :56:48.However, here we are, back at the second semifinal, with Edinburgh

:56:49. > :56:55.getting it under way and Melrose winning the first possession. They

:56:56. > :57:03.have got to be considered and calm and energetic as well. The referee

:57:04. > :57:14.indicates advantage for Melrose. Melrose are up for this, well done.

:57:15. > :57:22.Bruce Colvine. Almost through the gaps. Strauss just sussed him out.

:57:23. > :57:25.Richard Mills doesn't have the legs to get past Damien Hoyland, but

:57:26. > :57:34.someone else might on the other side. Look at the width, as you

:57:35. > :57:38.said. Galbraith, handing off paired. Strong laddie. Chance for Miller.

:57:39. > :57:49.Chris Dean is there, that was a great tackle for Edinburgh. Packer,

:57:50. > :57:55.running on empty. Yes, it's there! The change of pace took him through

:57:56. > :58:04.and he has put Edinburgh behind and Melrose ahead! It is Melrose 17-14

:58:05. > :58:11.in the lead. If they win this, if Melrose win this match, that is one

:58:12. > :58:14.of the big results. You can hear the referee talking to Edinburgh too,

:58:15. > :58:20.there have been a couple of high shots. Great play by Melrose.

:58:21. > :58:26.Richard Milne makes no mistake with this one. 19-14. Edinburgh need a

:58:27. > :58:31.converted try. The question is, what will the reaction be to this? That

:58:32. > :58:38.is a step and a half. Just came off his left foot. Stepped off his left

:58:39. > :58:40.foot, right through the gap. He's been as quick as any professional,

:58:41. > :58:47.hasn't he? Richard Mill, in the middle of the

:58:48. > :59:08.picture, getting the game under way. This man is such an experienced

:59:09. > :59:14.player. And away he goes, and the knock-on by George Turner. He gave

:59:15. > :59:20.the -- gets the biggest cheer of the afternoon from the Melrose crowd. A

:59:21. > :59:26.pitch rueful from George Turner, a bit full of relief from Godsmark.

:59:27. > :59:31.They know each other very well. This is a good break. Firing on all

:59:32. > :59:38.cylinders. You can hear the crowd just going, oh! Just had wreaked out

:59:39. > :59:48.to the front. That would be nervous for John Dalziel. His nails are away

:59:49. > :59:57.up to his wrist, gnawing away! Richard Mill, who put in the

:59:58. > :00:03.fabulous tackle, oh, referee! That maybe his membership of the Melrose

:00:04. > :00:08.club cancelled! No longer will he be welcome!

:00:09. > :00:21.I wonder if we can see Rob Dickson's face. The referee will be right!

:00:22. > :00:24.I think the referees have been very good today. They have been fair. No

:00:25. > :00:39.patronising or condescending. Sam Beard, this live from New

:00:40. > :00:55.Zealand is going to be Dragons next year. That'll be a great score. That

:00:56. > :01:00.level cert at 19-19. -- levels it. This big lad has made an impression

:01:01. > :01:10.since he came on, fresh legs, of course. A big kick, this.

:01:11. > :01:24.This is about 35 metres. Has he got it? All the way! 21-19, Edinburgh go

:01:25. > :01:34.in the lead. What a con version. -- conversion.

:01:35. > :01:40.The gap opened up to take the pass. That is the highest kick-off of the

:01:41. > :01:57.day. Richard Mill has played every minute

:01:58. > :02:08.of every tie and has been an absolute rugby. He might just go,

:02:09. > :02:19.there is the off-load. Almost over the shoulder of Pecquer. Godsmark on

:02:20. > :02:27.the far side. The referee says player on. That is what you get from

:02:28. > :02:34.the professional. There he goes, has the energy and the gas. That puts

:02:35. > :02:44.Edinburgh 26-19 ahead. Let's watch that again in a few seconds. I think

:02:45. > :02:50.a bit of verbal. But it was the kick through the ruck, it came back in.

:02:51. > :02:58.So often, if you sneak up that side, there is not the defender. I would

:02:59. > :03:10.have had a go as well. No, you would not!

:03:11. > :03:21.I can't get over Fowles' conversion, it was just textbook of a drop-kick.

:03:22. > :03:24.Headstone, lovely, rhythmical swing. John, you and I were on about

:03:25. > :03:30.jiggery-pokery earlier, but that break-up was exact the what we were

:03:31. > :03:35.speaking about. It is the old school sevens vision, spotted a gap down

:03:36. > :03:38.the narrow side. In years gone by, the Melrose crowd is used to thrill

:03:39. > :03:58.when the players were doing that. Fowles will have to go. Get up on

:03:59. > :04:02.your feet, the crowd shouting! Colvine is there, what a scrap for

:04:03. > :04:13.possession, they are fighting each other. Penalty. That is almost a

:04:14. > :04:21.yellow card. No, don't score there. Irvin Harris gets the try, 25-26. My

:04:22. > :04:27.goodness, we are in stoppage time, it all depends on this conversion.

:04:28. > :04:31.That is the issue. You want to get the converted try. They are all

:04:32. > :04:37.looking around, I will just score the try, and he leaves the kicker,

:04:38. > :04:43.Richard Mill, an incredible kick. If this goes over, this is a result.

:04:44. > :04:51.You will jump out of this commentary box if it does! It is good for the

:04:52. > :04:57.tournament if it goes over. Look at Richard Mill. Rob Dickson is

:04:58. > :05:03.watching carefully. Oh, it is wide on the right. And that is full-time.

:05:04. > :05:10.That is a great climax to a wonderful semifinal, Edinburgh have

:05:11. > :05:14.beaten Melrose by one point, 26-25. What they wanted to do was move the

:05:15. > :05:18.ball into the middle of the pitch, score the try, get the conversion,

:05:19. > :05:24.but they took the try and they will feel aggrieved, they came so close

:05:25. > :05:30.to beating the professionals. Melrose, in the likes of Pecquer

:05:31. > :05:40.they are as quick as some of the professionals. Unlucky. Jed-Forest

:05:41. > :05:48.learn from that? Stick at it and anybody is beatable. These

:05:49. > :05:54.professionals could be beaten by Fowles. STUDIO: The professionals

:05:55. > :05:57.are into the final, but by the skin of their teeth. Roddy Grant is in

:05:58. > :06:04.charge, into the final, but Melrose gave you a run for your money? They

:06:05. > :06:08.did, we always knew they would. They beat Edinburgh last week at a gala,

:06:09. > :06:14.good structures, they have a good history here. We knew we were in for

:06:15. > :06:18.it, but really pleased for the guys hanging in at the end. A feud

:06:19. > :06:23.gaskets were blown but the guys did well. A lot of emotion from the

:06:24. > :06:30.Edinburgh bench jeering the match, it means a lot to you? It means so

:06:31. > :06:35.much. The guys are competitive, they want to win. It is such a great

:06:36. > :06:41.empress to just tournament, it is a really good bunch of guys, the squad

:06:42. > :06:46.is really tight, no difference to us as a sevens side, the guys today, we

:06:47. > :06:51.really want to win. You are through to the final, congratulations.

:06:52. > :06:56.Roddy Grant very happy indeed. The Edinburgh side he has coached will

:06:57. > :07:01.play Jed-Forest in the final. We have the former Scotland sevens

:07:02. > :07:05.coach this afternoon. That semifinal was unbelievable, Melrose were so

:07:06. > :07:11.close to potentially knocking at the professionals? Absolutely, scoring

:07:12. > :07:21.straight after that. Unfortunately for Melrose, that was right in the

:07:22. > :07:26.corner and Richard Mill could not converted, but credit to Melrose.

:07:27. > :07:30.Some benefit to Jed looking forward. Jed have the extra ten minutes to

:07:31. > :07:33.rest, there is only 20 minutes between the end of that match and

:07:34. > :07:38.the final, will that make a difference? They are professional

:07:39. > :07:43.players in Edinburgh, but Jed will have that time to think? The ten

:07:44. > :07:48.minutes' breather will make a difference. When you get to the

:07:49. > :07:52.final, you play seven minutes each way and the qualifying but ten

:07:53. > :07:55.minutes each way in the final, that might put the advantage back on

:07:56. > :07:59.Edinburgh, you would expect them to be fitted because they are

:08:00. > :08:05.professional, but very sad for Melrose not to get there. As Steve

:08:06. > :08:08.said, you have to have 18 that is thinking more and is more

:08:09. > :08:13.experienced, Melrose will take heart from that, before hand, we didn't

:08:14. > :08:18.give them a chance, they played out of their skins, but they need that

:08:19. > :08:26.now is and they need to move on and score. Not to be, they are not in

:08:27. > :08:33.the final. The Aberdeen Asset Management final is coming up,

:08:34. > :08:37.Jed-Forest against Edinburgh. We are kicking off in about 17 minutes, or

:08:38. > :08:40.thereabouts! Let's talk about the fact that this is the first year

:08:41. > :08:49.that run sevens will be in the Olympics. How big a deal is that for

:08:50. > :08:54.the game? It started in Melrose in 1883, now it is a massive sports, a

:08:55. > :08:59.huge thing, the Hong Kong sevens are happening this weekend, now Olympic

:09:00. > :09:06.recognition? It is massive for the sport, for Rio and Tokyo. If you

:09:07. > :09:10.look at some of the names, Bryan Habana back for South Africa,

:09:11. > :09:15.Williams playing for New Zealand, it would be the pinnacle of a lot of

:09:16. > :09:18.players' careers and great for developing the game, globally. We

:09:19. > :09:22.have remembered about the Commonwealth Games and will talk

:09:23. > :09:26.about that in a moment, but the idea of this being an Olympic year, do

:09:27. > :09:30.you think potentially some Scottish players could make it into Team GB?

:09:31. > :09:38.Stevie probably knows more about that. But I just think it is a

:09:39. > :09:43.fantastic arena, the sevens. You talk about the Commonwealth Games,

:09:44. > :09:50.200,000 people went to watch that. The biggest crowd ever for any

:09:51. > :09:55.sevens tournament. Which is what it is all about. It is exciting to

:09:56. > :10:00.watch, but the players are there to take on the glory of Melrose or the

:10:01. > :10:05.Olympics. But for the players and the spectators, it is wonderful to

:10:06. > :10:09.watch, very exciting. Memories for you, Stevie, you were the coach of

:10:10. > :10:13.the Scotland team during the Commonwealth Games. This is at

:10:14. > :10:18.Ibrox, the noise in the stadium was fantastic? By far the best

:10:19. > :10:26.experience in atmosphere I have had as a coach. We chased New Zealand

:10:27. > :10:30.down at giving them a 17 point start, and then we had a critical

:10:31. > :10:35.game against Canada to get into the quarterfinal. Mark Bennett has been

:10:36. > :10:38.mentioned in terms of possibly being involved in the Olympics, he has

:10:39. > :10:44.done extremely well every time he has played. I think there is a real

:10:45. > :10:47.opportunity for Scottish players to be involved, you need to look at the

:10:48. > :10:51.competitiveness in the World Series, they lost to England and

:10:52. > :10:58.fortunately, today, in Hong Kong, but they have previously beaten and

:10:59. > :11:01.-- they lost to England, unfortunately. Do you think people

:11:02. > :11:06.like Stuart Hogg might be in with a shot? Sign a name has made it clear

:11:07. > :11:16.that he will select the best squad he can. -- Simon Amor has. It is not

:11:17. > :11:20.easy to transition from 15s into seven, Stuart Hogg came into the

:11:21. > :11:25.Commonwealth Games and did very well, he came off the back of a

:11:26. > :11:29.Scotland tour. Simon has identified a number of 15s players in each

:11:30. > :11:34.country, there is work going on to make sure that if he wants them, we

:11:35. > :11:37.can get them made available. One of the great memories of the

:11:38. > :11:40.Commonwealth Games was the final, New Zealand against South Africa.

:11:41. > :11:44.New Zealand had never lost in the final of the Commonwealth Games,

:11:45. > :11:52.South Africa managed to beat them, but what a game? It was exciting, so

:11:53. > :11:56.many people are watching, there are 12,000 people here today. It has

:11:57. > :12:00.been nonstop rug Eid, great action. Supporters want to see the ball in

:12:01. > :12:06.hand, the passing, this printing, the support play, the overhead pass.

:12:07. > :12:10.With that, the underdogs were probably South Africa that day, New

:12:11. > :12:15.Zealand were scooping a lot of prizes, it shows you what it is like

:12:16. > :12:20.to win, whoever wins the Melrose Sevens as well, we will probably see

:12:21. > :12:23.that. In terms of the Olympics, do you think New Zealand and South

:12:24. > :12:29.Africa could potentially be the teams who will be in it? Australia

:12:30. > :12:36.will be there, Team GB, potentially? You look at the World Series, New

:12:37. > :12:40.Zealand, Fiji, South Africa, Australia, they all have really good

:12:41. > :12:44.squads. It will be tough for Team GB because they have not played in the

:12:45. > :12:48.series together, but the preparation will start in earnest after the last

:12:49. > :12:54.two World Series tournaments, Team GB have three tournaments to

:12:55. > :12:58.prepare. We have seen it here, anybody is capable of beating

:12:59. > :13:02.anybody, there are only 12 teams in the Olympics, everybody has a

:13:03. > :13:07.chance. It will be very exciting, no doubt, let's hope some Scottish boys

:13:08. > :13:09.get into Team GB for the Rio Olympics.

:13:10. > :13:15.In the Greenyards, we are talking about the final coming up,

:13:16. > :13:25.Jed-Forest against Edinburgh. This is Jed's route to the final.

:13:26. > :13:30.The quarterfinal against Belgium, the town that knocked out the

:13:31. > :13:33.country! And a fantastic semifinal performance against Edinburgh

:13:34. > :13:36.Accies. I would imagine that it will be

:13:37. > :13:40.quite nervy in the dressing room, they know they are up against

:13:41. > :13:46.Edinburgh, a test team. Andy is there now. I am joined by

:13:47. > :13:50.the Jed coach, Ross Goodfellow, and captain, Gregor Young. You know you

:13:51. > :13:54.will be facing Edinburgh, a professional team, but you felt that

:13:55. > :13:57.if you are going to win this you'd probably have to overcome them? You

:13:58. > :14:02.had to play the best and beat the best, we will go out there, give it

:14:03. > :14:07.what we have. It was a tough game, they look like they are fatigued, we

:14:08. > :14:10.will just have to C. Gregor, how much would you enjoy testing

:14:11. > :14:15.yourself against these professionals? It is a chance that

:14:16. > :14:20.everybody has to take. You want to play rugby, be the best, paid

:14:21. > :14:24.professionals, we have to give it our all and hopefully the trophy.

:14:25. > :14:28.Melrose and Edinburgh very close, what did you learn from that, if

:14:29. > :14:33.anything, about how you can cope with them? They are both good side

:14:34. > :14:39.is capable of scoring from anywhere. But I feel like we are the same.

:14:40. > :14:44.People will be hurting. Both teams were really struggling because of

:14:45. > :14:48.tiredness. Hopefully we had enough in the tank to win. How are your

:14:49. > :14:54.legs, Gregor? One big performance left? These legs would usually start

:14:55. > :14:58.to be getting knackered now, but this is the Melrose Sevens final, so

:14:59. > :15:02.the boys get the extra boost. I am sure it'll be great, good luck.

:15:03. > :15:07.We had better get out of dressing room before the condensation closes

:15:08. > :15:13.the camera down! Lots of steam and excitement. They have been

:15:14. > :15:18.fantastic? Yes, they have some real sevens experience, Ross Goodfellow,

:15:19. > :15:22.the coach, Lewis and Gregor Young, both former Scotland international

:15:23. > :15:26.'s. They have a team capable of beating Edinburgh if they all

:15:27. > :15:29.perform, the big challenge will be if they can cope with the

:15:30. > :15:34.physicality that Edinburgh will bring. And the fact they are a

:15:35. > :15:39.Borders side, and here in Melrose, winning here is all the sweeter?

:15:40. > :15:45.Very much. I did it a while ago, you forgot to mention examination mark

:15:46. > :15:49.1993, a long time ago, one of my biggest parts of rugby winning, very

:15:50. > :15:54.special, these boys know that. They have said in the footage has special

:15:55. > :15:57.it is to win at Melrose. They will have confidence of how well Melrose

:15:58. > :16:01.competed against Edinburgh and they will come into the final a little

:16:02. > :16:07.bit more confidently than they would have done. It will be a pretty

:16:08. > :16:11.ding-dong final. Let's look at some of the tries that Jed have scored on

:16:12. > :16:16.their way to the final. This is one in the second round. This is when

:16:17. > :16:19.they had a spring in their steps earlier in the afternoon, this

:16:20. > :16:26.fellow has been scoring lots of tries this afternoon. He is a big

:16:27. > :16:30.range runner, Lewis is the same. They will fancy their chances. They

:16:31. > :16:34.have both been professional sevens players previously, they know what

:16:35. > :16:43.it takes, they know they can compete. This man made a big

:16:44. > :16:51.difference when he came on, Doddie? It is nice to have him on the bench,

:16:52. > :16:54.too, when he did. Going right through the defence, making space.

:16:55. > :17:02.The other thing is that it is a team game. The support is vital in this

:17:03. > :17:07.game. Yes, the young boys might make space, but you have to have the

:17:08. > :17:11.balls backing up, Jed-Forest have done it extremely well so far.

:17:12. > :17:14.Nudges the support runners, but having the awareness and the

:17:15. > :17:17.wherewithal to make sure you know where they are, passing over the

:17:18. > :17:22.shoulder and stuff going on, lovely to see? People think it just

:17:23. > :17:26.happens, but they train together all the time. They have played a lot of

:17:27. > :17:31.sevens over the last number of seasons together as a team. As

:17:32. > :17:35.Doddie said, they are a very proud group of players. The big question

:17:36. > :17:39.will be whether it means more to Jed to win the Melrose Sevens than

:17:40. > :17:44.Edinburgh? The only people who know that will be in the stress in ruins.

:17:45. > :17:50.The fact that it is here, Jed have an opportunity, I think it will be

:17:51. > :17:53.interesting. It will be very interesting, Jed play Edinburgh,

:17:54. > :17:58.let's remind ourselves how they manage to get here this afternoon.

:17:59. > :18:02.They had a very comfortable win against GHA in the first round, then

:18:03. > :18:06.Harriet, who got through in their own match in the last minute, to get

:18:07. > :18:12.into the quarterfinals, they were knocked out by Edinburgh. I did not

:18:13. > :18:17.semifinal, just unlucky for Melrose, they pushed Edinburgh close but they

:18:18. > :18:21.are through to the final. Earlier, Roddy Grant was very happy. Andy has

:18:22. > :18:29.run across to their dressing room. Yes, I have. I was wondering, head

:18:30. > :18:33.of the final, Glasgow Warriors have won this for the last couple of

:18:34. > :18:37.years, does that give an added incentive to take the box for Adam

:18:38. > :18:43.Brook? Not really, to be honest. We all just really want to win this. --

:18:44. > :18:49.to take the box for Edinburgh. We are all really tight, it would be

:18:50. > :18:55.great for the boys, they have played so well so far, to win. How

:18:56. > :19:00.impressed had you been by Jed? They have done well, traditionally they

:19:01. > :19:04.have always been good, they have played sevens very well, which is a

:19:05. > :19:08.completely different game to 15s, they have played well in this

:19:09. > :19:13.tournament, but the young brothers have got good engines and they are

:19:14. > :19:17.all really good players. Damian, you have played in the sevens for

:19:18. > :19:28.Melrose, has special would it be to come away with the winner 's medal

:19:29. > :19:36.for Edinburgh? I am Chris. Arican he is hiding! I have been in a final

:19:37. > :19:43.before. It would be great to get the win. A tough day, short turnarounds,

:19:44. > :19:46.hopefully we will win it. Do you expect the professional fitness

:19:47. > :19:50.levels to work as an advantage later? It is probably perceived to

:19:51. > :19:56.be so, but it is a very different fitness. I know from doing sevens

:19:57. > :20:02.that it is tougher on the old lungs, but hopefully we will have more in

:20:03. > :20:05.the engine, we will go out and see. Roddy, you recently made the

:20:06. > :20:12.transition into coaching, it would be a nice win in your CV to pull

:20:13. > :20:17.away as a winner? It would be awesome, any player all coach, to

:20:18. > :20:23.get a Melrose winners' medal is some thing special. Many thanks to Roddy

:20:24. > :20:26.and Chris, I am sure they will give a good account of themselves in the

:20:27. > :20:31.final. STUDIO: Roddy Grant clearly very

:20:32. > :20:35.excited. Edinburgh have been very strong, the professional players,

:20:36. > :20:43.the extra elements of fitness on the fact that they are training every

:20:44. > :20:46.day? -- and the fact. They have had their own fitness, but they also

:20:47. > :20:56.have Highland and Chris Dean, they have a very, very good brand. Nathan

:20:57. > :20:59.Fowles has pulled the strings. I think it will come down to whether

:21:00. > :21:04.they can play as a team and bring their strengths in terms of

:21:05. > :21:13.physicality and getting the ball to Jamie and Highland. -- Damian

:21:14. > :21:20.Hoyland. Nathan Fowles has been very oppressive, he has been scoring

:21:21. > :21:26.tries as well. -- very impressive. He has been special. He has been a

:21:27. > :21:35.big part of Edinburgh, but how much diesel is left in his time? -- tank?

:21:36. > :21:40.Edinburgh are a good side, we saw that in the first game. There are

:21:41. > :21:46.areas of the game that may not be as sharp as they would like. Melrose

:21:47. > :21:53.came back into the amateur side. They competed well, it went on to

:21:54. > :21:57.the last kick. This is one that Jed-Forest will have to have a

:21:58. > :22:02.reward for, but they have a number of stray crooners. Great speed,

:22:03. > :22:07.great awareness. He was injured in the last game, Katoa, I don't know

:22:08. > :22:12.how bad it was, if he was involved it could be tricky. It is

:22:13. > :22:18.interesting when you see a couple of games prior, hopefully the coaches

:22:19. > :22:24.can analyse who are the strike runners, Fowles is one of those, if

:22:25. > :22:32.you can slow him down, they have a chance, but Edinburgh will do the

:22:33. > :22:39.same to the Young boys. Stevie, Jed are the underdogs, have they got it

:22:40. > :22:42.in them to beat Edinburgh? Undoubtedly, but whether they have

:22:43. > :22:46.the physicality to match what Edinburgh will bring to the table, I

:22:47. > :22:51.am not sure. The evidence will suggest not, based on what

:22:52. > :22:56.professional sites at and in previous years. It would be great to

:22:57. > :23:02.see Jed do it. If Jed can make it a game of sevens, which sounds simple,

:23:03. > :23:04.they give themselves a chance. If it becomes individual battles, the

:23:05. > :23:09.physicality and professionalism will come to the fore.

:23:10. > :23:14.Let's get to this final of the Aberdeen Asset Management Melrose

:23:15. > :23:20.Sevens 2016. It is Jed-Forest, the team who knocked out Belgium

:23:21. > :23:27.earlier, against Edinburgh. Glasgow Warriors won eight for the

:23:28. > :23:33.last two years, can be other professional Scottish team take it

:23:34. > :23:39.through? The ladies club is the trophy they will be playing for. The

:23:40. > :23:43.audience has enjoyed a festival of rugby. There was a slight

:23:44. > :23:47.disappointment when Melrose went out in the semifinal, but Edinburgh have

:23:48. > :23:52.been impressive. Edinburgh Accies were knocked out by Jed-Forest in

:23:53. > :23:57.the semifinal. Jed have been playing fantastic stuff. The way they have

:23:58. > :24:01.got together as a team, had strike runners going, they have done very

:24:02. > :24:06.well. As have Edinburgh, the professionals against Jed, Jed are

:24:07. > :24:12.desperate to win the trophy. The last time an amateur team won in

:24:13. > :24:18.Melrose was in 2011, won by the home side. Can Jed-Forest be the first

:24:19. > :24:21.amateur team to win for five years? Edinburgh really want this. As Roddy

:24:22. > :24:26.Grant said earlier, and we can get to the final now, Jed-Forest against

:24:27. > :24:30.Edinburgh with Bill and John in the commentary box.

:24:31. > :24:35.COMMENTATOR: The crowd are well dropped -- well wrapped up, the

:24:36. > :24:41.temperature has dropped a little. It is quite cool, the slightest Rizal,

:24:42. > :24:44.but not much. A spot of rain in the air. There is Melrose Abbey in the

:24:45. > :24:50.background, what a backdrop for the Greenyards, which is just laced with

:24:51. > :24:55.history about the seven aside game. When you think about 100 and jeers

:24:56. > :24:59.ago when it started as a fundraising event as to what it has become in

:25:00. > :25:04.Melrose and further afield in the expanse of the world, I'd essay that

:25:05. > :25:09.Ned Haig would be a very, very happy man. The Melrose committee would be

:25:10. > :25:16.happy with the size of the crowd. And if you think about rugby, the

:25:17. > :25:20.sevens as a tool for selling the game, America is getting franchises

:25:21. > :25:24.up and running, it is an Olympic sport, it is because of the sevens.

:25:25. > :25:30.It is an Olympic sport with Olympic funding. This game is the contrast

:25:31. > :25:34.between a sevens team in Jed who play sevens shape, up against a team

:25:35. > :25:38.of professionals who are stronger and probably quicker. I think the

:25:39. > :25:58.key guys are Katoa and Tofilau. This is your

:25:59. > :26:03.team, but I think almost everyone is supporting them against Edinburgh?

:26:04. > :26:16.But we are always neutral when we come to finals! Here are the

:26:17. > :26:21.line-ups. Some well-known names. Niall Paterson has the honour of

:26:22. > :26:25.refereeing this Melrose final. Nathan Fowles will get proceedings

:26:26. > :26:32.under way, ten minutes each way with a break of a couple of minutes at

:26:33. > :26:36.half-time. Edinburgh, the professionals, against Jed, the

:26:37. > :26:40.amateurs. Nathan Fowles with a kick that does not reach ten metres, but

:26:41. > :26:43.Jed play first, and the game goes on. I was going to say that was not

:26:44. > :26:50.professional, but Jed will not mind! A very strong tackle by Sam Beard,

:26:51. > :27:07.he knew what he was doing. There is the handoff, brilliant

:27:08. > :27:15.tackle. That was Katoa who put the tackle in common here is Harkin is

:27:16. > :27:23.doing country dancing. In touch. What a start! I just think Harkness,

:27:24. > :27:26.he has got an ability to beat a man. Look at the difference in stature

:27:27. > :27:30.between him and the professionals, but when it comes to rugby there

:27:31. > :27:35.will be nobody who can play better than him, in terms of individual

:27:36. > :27:46.skill he is as good as anybody. Years of sevens experience. Gregor

:27:47. > :27:57.Young jumped at the back, Strauss got it.

:27:58. > :28:13.They have men out wide. Four to one arm outside, engineered brilliantly.

:28:14. > :28:21.And there is Otulea Katoa, the seven times capped Tongan. Not a happy

:28:22. > :28:26.boy. This was dangerous, they suddenly launch the attack. Katoa

:28:27. > :28:30.was coming, he was thinking of coming, I am going to hedge right,

:28:31. > :28:34.but the pass went to him as if he was still running. Roddy Grant, the

:28:35. > :28:39.danger with the ten minutes each way in the final is that the stronger

:28:40. > :28:45.team naturally survives a bit more, so Jed had to get points on the

:28:46. > :28:50.board. Jed last won the final in 1974, last year they went out in the

:28:51. > :28:58.semifinal to the Warriors, who beat Germany in the final.

:28:59. > :29:09.Here they come with another wee one around -- runaround, as they call

:29:10. > :29:16.them. Hogg, trying to get outside them. No one on the right, come back

:29:17. > :29:21.to the left. The ball into Hanson. Hogg again. Edinburgh quite

:29:22. > :29:25.composed. It's a tight game of cat and mouse, John. Look at the

:29:26. > :29:28.Edinburgh defensive line, those red and white jerseys, it will take

:29:29. > :29:41.someone to go in between them like that. Chisholm, Gregor Young. Over

:29:42. > :29:45.the top. The wise old owl. He just stabs his feet a bit like a Cossack

:29:46. > :29:52.dance and then he passes the ball. Chris Gillon. Edinburgh quite keen

:29:53. > :29:57.just to let Jed have possession, they're not seeming to go anywhere.

:29:58. > :30:02.They're just coming up together, keeping that four or five metres in

:30:03. > :30:10.between. Oh! That is good. There is the pace. Gregor Young to Lewis

:30:11. > :30:17.Young, and Lewis Young opens Jed's account in this Melrose Sevens

:30:18. > :30:21.final. First blood to the team from the Borders. 5-0 and a lot of

:30:22. > :30:25.rejoicing in the terraces, I can tell you. They're not just running

:30:26. > :30:30.at professional players, they're trying to open them up. It was

:30:31. > :30:36.inside, everything was hand to hand to hand. Didn't go for contact. They

:30:37. > :30:42.went for the gap and the off-load. Lewis Young pops over the

:30:43. > :30:48.conversion. 7-0 Jed lead. A long way to go, of course. It has been a ten

:30:49. > :30:52.minutes each way final, so they have got over five minutes to play in

:30:53. > :30:57.this first half, and the crowd, which has stayed right to the end,

:30:58. > :31:03.between ten and 11,000 people here, engrossed in this. And who knows

:31:04. > :31:13.who's going to be the winner. Lewis Young with his kick right into the

:31:14. > :31:18.hands of Nathan Fowles. Andries Strauss, he has played over 100

:31:19. > :31:23.games in Super 15 rugby in South Africa. Very knowledgeable player.

:31:24. > :31:33.What a sidestep by Nathan Fowles. Showing a lot of class, there. Will

:31:34. > :31:45.Helu comes up on the right but what a fine tackle by Ian Chisholm. Dean,

:31:46. > :31:51.Sam Beard. Highland! Hoyland had it, but knocked on. A forward pass. Jed

:31:52. > :31:54.breathe a sigh of relief. Dangerous moments for Jed, because Chris

:31:55. > :32:03.Gillon is injured, so they only have six people playing. I just saw the

:32:04. > :32:07.physio, but we can't see the video. He wants to get him off the pitch

:32:08. > :32:12.although he doesn't seem to want to get off the pitch. What is good

:32:13. > :32:15.about Jed is that scrambled defence. Edinburgh were through them twice

:32:16. > :32:24.and they just applaud them back. Nathan Fowles was through. That was

:32:25. > :32:30.a loose pass. Sam Beard was through. One of the young boys, I think it

:32:31. > :32:34.was Gregor Law, was there, just in case Damien Hoyland tried something

:32:35. > :32:35.fantastic. Chris Gillon on the touchline receiving a bit of

:32:36. > :32:50.attention. But Fraser Harkness puts in. Back it

:32:51. > :32:58.goes to Ian Chisholm. This is Lewis. If you're wondering how I know which

:32:59. > :33:02.is which, I'm dammed if I remember! It's hard to separate them. I think

:33:03. > :33:08.it's to do with the numbers on their jersey! It's partly that. And there

:33:09. > :33:24.is another way. However... Here goes Craig Coward. To Hogg. The pass went

:33:25. > :33:31.behind. Away it goes, Helu. It is Helu and goodbye really, isn't it?

:33:32. > :33:35.There we go. That has opened the professionals's scoring tally, but

:33:36. > :33:44.he has injured his shoulder. Yes, just moves that lose pass. Just as

:33:45. > :33:48.long as it wasn't Helu Dolly. A good score but he has been tackled, right

:33:49. > :33:54.on his right shoulder. He has crushed his left shoulder, he's not

:33:55. > :34:03.happy. Edinburgh getting in behind the Jed defence. On the touchline,

:34:04. > :34:08.Helu is here, and I just wonder if Alan Solomons is thinking about his

:34:09. > :34:13.battle ravaged squad being thinned out even more. That is a conversion

:34:14. > :34:17.which is successful, so it's all square, as Nathan Fowles adds the

:34:18. > :34:24.two points and Helu gets a bit of treatment from the medics. It's

:34:25. > :34:31.easy, isn't it, because it's just a loose ball? Helu beats two or three

:34:32. > :34:37.people and that is that. His shoulder... He's just not happy. You

:34:38. > :34:42.can hear the crunch. That is a drop out by Nathan Fowles. Jed have won

:34:43. > :34:49.possession. Back to Harkness. Up comes that red and white line.

:34:50. > :34:59.Strauss and Harkness in a little tete-a-tete on the far side. Here he

:35:00. > :35:05.comes. Almost away. Lewis Young there to help. Gregor Young in at

:35:06. > :35:11.scrum-half. Penalty against Sam Beard.

:35:12. > :35:15.Was that forward? It almost looked like it. Ian Chisholm. See the

:35:16. > :35:29.wheeze Well, they're not counter rucking.

:35:30. > :35:30.Up against Sam Beard and he's not going anywhere fast against Sam

:35:31. > :35:35.Beard. This is Chris Dean now, and Hoyland.

:35:36. > :35:54.And the big lad. Deliberate knock-on. Strauss. It is

:35:55. > :35:57.locked at 7-7. Five-minute is to play in this final. I beg your

:35:58. > :36:05.pardon, they have got just under a minute to play in the first half. I

:36:06. > :36:12.was thinking of a 14 minute tie. Katoa come away at the touchline.

:36:13. > :36:17.That was a great tackle by big Robert Hogg who just has another

:36:18. > :36:27.look at his victim, so to speak, and just walks away. Got him by the

:36:28. > :36:39.ankles, just hauled down the big Samoan. Someone has lost a boot away

:36:40. > :36:42.at the far end. There was a wee pause in proceedings because just at

:36:43. > :36:49.the other end as we see it, I think it's George Turner. He has been

:36:50. > :36:55.pretty influential, Turner. He's a physical hooker. Edinburgh starting

:36:56. > :37:00.to win the collisions, aren't they? Helu is making ground, Katoa is

:37:01. > :37:06.making ground. You look at the Youngs and there are a couple who

:37:07. > :37:11.can unlock them. At the moment it seems to be swinging towards

:37:12. > :37:19.Edinburgh towards half-time. Sam Beard, along to been. Hoyland, the

:37:20. > :37:24.danger man. Chased by Lewis Young. Who has got the pace? Sam Beard has

:37:25. > :37:29.got the strength. Young has got the pace and Sam Beard gets the ball.

:37:30. > :37:34.That is a penalty to Jed. They needed it because the pendulum had

:37:35. > :37:36.kind of swung back in Edinburgh's favour. Here is Craig Coward. Gregor

:37:37. > :37:47.Young. Harkness at the back. Here is Sam Beard, just general link

:37:48. > :37:59.everything. Chris Dean with a wee bouncer for

:38:00. > :38:05.Strauss, who picked it up well. Katoa. Look at him go, this big

:38:06. > :38:10.Tongan. Lovely running and then an injection of pace. Look at the

:38:11. > :38:14.gritted teeth going over the try line. Edinburgh go-ahead for the

:38:15. > :38:20.first time in this game, Jed 7-12 Edinburgh. I was just thinking that

:38:21. > :38:26.so much whether you get a pro contract is down to luck. Look the

:38:27. > :38:31.two Young boys, you can't say they're not as good as some of the

:38:32. > :38:38.others, until you watch this man. All that pace, all that strength.

:38:39. > :38:43.Not many local players can do that. But he will be won in 1000. Nathan

:38:44. > :38:51.Fowles. Long-range conversion attempt. It has gone wide. That's

:38:52. > :38:56.half-time in this thriller here. A 5-point lead for Edinburgh and there

:38:57. > :39:06.is the man who scored the last try, Otulea Katoa. Edinburgh lead 12-7 at

:39:07. > :39:10.the turn. I think if Jed can keep the ball in wide spaces and use the

:39:11. > :39:14.likes of the Young brothers. I don't know which one it was but one of

:39:15. > :39:18.them hauled back Sam Beard. There are not going to be many people in

:39:19. > :39:21.the Edinburgh team Miles quicker than them, but Edinburgh going to

:39:22. > :39:25.win the physical battle. The try that came in the first half for Jed

:39:26. > :39:31.was because they kept it out of context and kept the ball alive.

:39:32. > :39:35.Edinburgh don't have that raw abrasion as the game goes on, so

:39:36. > :39:40.they are going to have to be smart. If they win this game, it will be a

:39:41. > :39:45.big upset. I just like the way they played. Very organised, very good

:39:46. > :39:53.young players. The Young brothers, I don't know why they're not

:39:54. > :39:59.professionals. Well, there is Chris Gillen, having another wee word with

:40:00. > :40:04.the physio. He wants back on. If it's a blood injury, he will get

:40:05. > :40:15.back on. Here we are, ten minutes to go. What is he, his manager? I don't

:40:16. > :40:19.know, he's one of the coaches. But a man who gives such wise coaching

:40:20. > :40:23.help to the team. There is good fellow, who is the sevens coach, on

:40:24. > :40:37.the touchline. This has together ten. Ten minutes to go. Edinburgh

:40:38. > :40:42.leading. How you tell -- I worked out how you tell the Young brothers

:40:43. > :40:49.apart. Different colour boots! Correct. That's the only way I can

:40:50. > :40:56.sort them out. Here is Turner. Strauss out to Hoyland on the far

:40:57. > :41:02.side, Lewis after him. They must feel that the Young boys have got

:41:03. > :41:06.the pace. This is a chance for Jed, they have to take it. What a tackle,

:41:07. > :41:18.what a thumping tackle by George Turner. That was a great tackle. He

:41:19. > :41:24.smashed them. And then watch this, he just gets straight back up and

:41:25. > :41:30.straight on board. Did he let go of him? I don't think he did, but he

:41:31. > :41:36.hammered into them. It was a winner of a tackle, a winning tackle. Here

:41:37. > :41:43.I am again, he says. Just a little bit of edge in that. Strauss wide,

:41:44. > :41:47.he has got Nathan Fowles and he has got Katoa as well. Nathan Fowles

:41:48. > :41:53.wants to go! Look at the Excel oration. The ball coming back

:41:54. > :41:59.beautifully for Edinburgh, three men out wide. There they are, one, two,

:42:00. > :42:05.three, Hoyland and then Sam Beard. Try for Edinburgh. Beautifully

:42:06. > :42:12.worked. Beautifully worked. Simple, simple, simple. Take the ball as far

:42:13. > :42:17.as you can using Katoa up the left wing. Nathan Fowles is at the heart

:42:18. > :42:21.of everything. It is his long spin pass. This is Hoyland, he just

:42:22. > :42:27.brings a man onto them. That is a run in. It's clever, isn't it? Find

:42:28. > :42:40.somebody out wide... Oh dear. Well, we are just waiting for Nathan

:42:41. > :42:43.Fowles to take the conversion, while a gentleman is escorted from the

:42:44. > :43:02.field. Nathan Fowles. It has gone wide. So,

:43:03. > :43:09.Jed 7-17 Edinburgh. Some people look on horrified, some people look on

:43:10. > :43:16.mildly amused, but I think most people look on disappointed.

:43:17. > :43:25.There is Sam Beard, who scored that last try, just trying to stay away

:43:26. > :43:28.from all of that. You can see the yellow jackets away in the distance,

:43:29. > :43:34.with this gentleman being escorted away.

:43:35. > :43:46.He will get his name in the papers, but for all the wrong reasons.

:43:47. > :43:57.Right. You want to add the score. You want to add the score quickly,

:43:58. > :44:03.get back in this game. They need to do it pretty soon. That is great

:44:04. > :44:07.from Nathan Fowles. It bounced away from Harkness. With his bulk, he

:44:08. > :44:14.managed to put Sam Beard on his backside. Goodness me. That was just

:44:15. > :44:19.about a hospital pass, there. Knocked on by Edinburgh. You can see

:44:20. > :44:25.Jed under pressure and Chris been almost got in for that, for an extra

:44:26. > :44:31.try. That really would have sealed it. It is still open at the moment.

:44:32. > :44:39.There is still a chance. Harkness at scrum-half, as Edinburgh apply a bit

:44:40. > :44:44.of oomph in that scrum. He has two boot it long downfield and now there

:44:45. > :44:49.is a foot race on. Lewis Young down there by Chris Dean. That is a

:44:50. > :44:55.penalty. He's got to stay on his feet. He's got to be careful. You

:44:56. > :45:05.shouldn't argue with the rest, either. He wasn't on his feet. You

:45:06. > :45:09.can't just go in and tackle him. A wee break in proceedings here as

:45:10. > :45:21.somebody gets a bit of treatment. There is Neil Patterson, quite happy

:45:22. > :45:27.with that decision. Sasa Tofilau It is coming on for the Edinburgh side.

:45:28. > :45:42.He is another of these big South Sea Islanders. He is Samoan. Over in

:45:43. > :45:49.Scotland at the moment. You can hear him saying 13 minutes. It will

:45:50. > :45:54.finish in the 20th minute, so quite a long way to go. A real contrast in

:45:55. > :45:57.styles all the way through this tournament. You look at the way

:45:58. > :46:09.Edinburgh play and they are happy to use their arm strength and muscle.

:46:10. > :46:18.Harkness is the free man but he is caught by three men. This is Andries

:46:19. > :46:22.Strauss, up the narrow side. Hoyland trying to break away, and an

:46:23. > :46:26.off-load to Nathan Fowles. Nathan Fowles has been one of the strong

:46:27. > :46:32.runners for Edinburgh in this competition and he's done it again.

:46:33. > :46:37.Seven points to 22 now and Edinburgh beginning to open up a sizeable gap.

:46:38. > :46:45.They are beginning to make the little breaks, aren't they? You are

:46:46. > :46:51.drawing in a couple of men, Hoyland with that last-minute off-load.

:46:52. > :46:55.Edinburgh, you know what? They've played the game quite slowly. But

:46:56. > :47:02.when they sniff a gap, they are right through you. Hoyland has

:47:03. > :47:08.played quite well but I think Nathan Fowles. Jed got to the final in 2012

:47:09. > :47:15.and they went out to the Saracens professional team by 50 points. Here

:47:16. > :47:19.is Fowles with the conversion. It seems to be Jeff Maggert last

:47:20. > :47:24.misfortune to meet a professional side in the final. That is what they

:47:25. > :47:30.are all playing for, the beautiful Melrose Trophy. Look at it. And of

:47:31. > :47:34.course the medals are what the players all want to get their hands

:47:35. > :47:38.on, because that is the most prized possession in Scottish rugby sevens.

:47:39. > :47:44.Jed desperately need to get a try now. The we spark that was there

:47:45. > :47:48.from them has gone and they need to get it quickly. To be perfectly

:47:49. > :47:51.honest, it's difficult as an amateur player and you mentioned the word

:47:52. > :47:56.professional, you go to work probably ate until six everyday and

:47:57. > :48:01.training probably an extra night, to play against somebody who turns up

:48:02. > :48:04.every day at Murrayfield as they do, lifting weights and practising being

:48:05. > :48:09.professional rugby players. The fact that they can score some tries is

:48:10. > :48:15.great. He puts a wee kick infield and it bounces right into the hands

:48:16. > :48:26.of Strauss. Fowles has all the time in the world. There is Sasa Tofilau,

:48:27. > :48:31.with Hoyland lurking. Chance here LEXI needs to get in behind the

:48:32. > :48:38.posts. He has got there, he has got the try. 12-24, Roscoe with that

:48:39. > :48:46.burst of pace up by the grandstand, and five more points for Jed. He has

:48:47. > :48:53.got pace, Combe he's definitely a flyer. Two more tries by Jed,

:48:54. > :49:03.unlikely, but if they do then you have a completely different ball

:49:04. > :49:10.game. He almost got him, but not quite. So, Jed line up and there is

:49:11. > :49:19.a quick restart, there it is. Just evaded Harkness. Would you believe

:49:20. > :49:26.it? Jed 12-24 Edinburgh. There is the scoreline. Three and a half

:49:27. > :49:31.minutes to go. A bit of a miracle, I think, if Jed could score two tries

:49:32. > :49:41.and concede none, but you never know. Gregor Law is the man at the

:49:42. > :49:45.front of that big Jed line-out. It goes right over them all. Callum,

:49:46. > :49:53.Chisholm, Lewis Young. There is a gap. Trying to bash his way through.

:49:54. > :49:59.There we go. Come on, Roscoe, do it again, he says. Hoyland puts the

:50:00. > :50:06.tackle in. Chisholm goes, he is away! He could do it. As he got the

:50:07. > :50:13.legs? He is there a! He's got the try. 17-24. Is this the beginning of

:50:14. > :50:17.a miraculous recovery? I tell you what it is, it's brave. Look how

:50:18. > :50:22.exhausted these players are. They've been playing all afternoon, they had

:50:23. > :50:26.to wait two hours between games at one point, and Ian Chisholm, you

:50:27. > :50:31.think about how they have built this game... Lewis Young is about to slot

:50:32. > :50:43.this if he can. They need the two points. Long and straight between

:50:44. > :50:47.the sticks! It is a one scored game now, only five points between the

:50:48. > :50:52.sides, and a couple of minutes left. Plenty of time. Plenty of time for

:50:53. > :50:58.Edinburgh as well, John, is there not? Well... There is that fatal

:50:59. > :51:04.error of the kick-off not going ten and Edinburgh handed possession. You

:51:05. > :51:11.would never have said five point gain, would you? With a minute and a

:51:12. > :51:20.half left. Chris Bean with the ball. He's wasting time. Get on with it,

:51:21. > :51:29.just get on with it, son. -- Chris Dean. There we go. That was Tom

:51:30. > :51:33.Galbraith. Chris Dean is caught there, almost. Galbraith, a very

:51:34. > :51:39.strong lad. George Turner. Chance here. What a tackle by Fraser

:51:40. > :51:54.Harkness! Brilliant, brilliant stuff! Galbraith! This is

:51:55. > :52:01.excitement. Sasa Tofilau... The ball goes wild. And wide. Very exciting

:52:02. > :52:09.up here in the commentary box as well. Good running there, that was

:52:10. > :52:13.Andries Strauss. Sasa Tofilau. Can anybody stop this giant? He just

:52:14. > :52:23.bashes his way to the line. He's got it. He's got it. 19 - 29. Sasa

:52:24. > :52:31.Tofilau goes in for the try that may save Edinburgh. I think you're

:52:32. > :52:38.right, I think that's the try that makes it. What's that, 15 seconds

:52:39. > :52:43.left? Sasa Tofilau, you said he is the big, strong lad. Young thinks

:52:44. > :52:48.he's got him. Young isn't happy at the end of this. Sasa Tofilau

:52:49. > :52:57.through the middle, through the middle. Yet, I would call that a

:52:58. > :53:06.try. -- yes, I would. In the end it is a win for Edinburgh over Jed.

:53:07. > :53:10.Federer the winners, 29-19. STUDIO

:53:11. > :53:19.Be professional team proved too strong in the end and glorious

:53:20. > :53:27.scenes here in Melrose. They were good, weren't they? All credit to

:53:28. > :53:35.Jed-Forest, they got themselves back in the game. Gave the ball back to

:53:36. > :53:43.Edinburgh with a minute ago and they showed their class to finish with a

:53:44. > :53:45.try. Let's hear what Andy Burke as to say, he is on the pitch right

:53:46. > :53:56.now. We will try and get hold of him as

:53:57. > :54:01.soon as possible here. Obviously mayhem down on the pitch at the

:54:02. > :54:05.moment, lots of noise going around. As you can see, all the fans are

:54:06. > :54:15.delighted with the way it has gone. You have to feel a bit sorry for

:54:16. > :54:20.Jed-Forest. You do. There is Chris, the captain. Edinburgh came and did

:54:21. > :54:24.a good job. Jed-Forest went right to the end and little touches within

:54:25. > :54:29.the game could have gone either way, but credit to Edinburgh, they looked

:54:30. > :54:35.the dominant side from the start. They played some pretty good stuff

:54:36. > :54:40.as well, didn't they, Edinburgh? They did. They played a mixture of

:54:41. > :54:46.good sevens and what you class as more typical fifteens rugby. They

:54:47. > :54:50.are a good blend of local players and the Southee Islander boys coming

:54:51. > :54:55.to the fore. It's not easy coming here as favourites. Everyone

:54:56. > :55:03.expected them to win but they have dealt with that pressure, to be fair

:55:04. > :55:08.to them, and won it well. Their players were so exciting and

:55:09. > :55:12.dynamic. Other guys back it up. We talked about it all through the

:55:13. > :55:18.afternoon, the support runners were very important. Fowles got past the

:55:19. > :55:22.first tackle and the rest of his team worked off him and did very

:55:23. > :55:26.well. The whole team did remarkably well but the gap wasn't that much

:55:27. > :55:30.and Jed-Forest can take a lot of heart because they are professionals

:55:31. > :55:36.and they train pretty much every day, so they should be a lot better.

:55:37. > :55:40.Jed-Forest gave them a very exciting final and Edinburgh just won it in

:55:41. > :55:45.the last couple of seconds. Do you think perhaps the fact that Glasgow

:55:46. > :55:50.have won this for the last two years, now Edinburgh are here,

:55:51. > :55:53.another Pro team winning it, is that the way it's going to go? If you

:55:54. > :55:58.continue to invite professional teams, you're going to give them a

:55:59. > :56:02.real opportunity. But the local sides have got closer on a couple of

:56:03. > :56:05.occasions and that has given them great heart and they will look

:56:06. > :56:11.forward to the rest of the season in sevens. Roddy, that was eight

:56:12. > :56:19.special final and a special victory for your team. It was. Special is

:56:20. > :56:23.the word. Sanguine comes to mind. Just so proud of the guys, such a

:56:24. > :56:29.good feeling and just so, so proud of them. The effort was visible to

:56:30. > :56:37.me. I'm sure the whole crowd felt it as well. They rang you really close.

:56:38. > :56:40.The good thing about sevens is that it is a completely different game to

:56:41. > :56:47.fifteens, different fitness, different athletes. They both played

:56:48. > :56:53.incredibly well. They are both unbelievable sevens teams. You came

:56:54. > :56:56.out on top, congratulations. STUDIO

:56:57. > :57:02.Roddy Grant, clearly a very happy man. No doubt about it, they played

:57:03. > :57:06.the best rugby and they are the champions Melrose 2016. From all of

:57:07. > :57:09.us, thanks very much for your company. For now.

:57:10. > :58:10.# Who do you think you are kidding, Mr Hitler,

:58:11. > :58:17.# We are the boys who will stop your little game,
