:01:00. > :01:07.It's the start of Ireland's traditional autumn Rugby 7's. A new

:01:08. > :01:13.international season and a new coach for island. That brings new

:01:14. > :01:19.expectation. The new era starts today in Dublin at the Aviva Stadium

:01:20. > :01:22.against Samoa. That afternoon. It's the first of three November

:01:23. > :01:26.internationals live here on the BBC. Australia and New Zealand are coming

:01:27. > :01:33.up in the next fortnight, Ireland will hope to give their coach a good

:01:34. > :01:41.start. Eddie O'Sullivan and form astray Liam International Ryan

:01:42. > :01:45.Constable join me. What is the first international game like fora new

:01:46. > :01:50.coach? Nerve racking, to say the least. They need a good start and a

:01:51. > :01:57.good win. It is in at the deep end. I suppose this is the problem, this

:01:58. > :02:02.game is not as easy as it seems. People think we can beat Samoa but

:02:03. > :02:07.they are ranked above us. They have nothing to lose today. This is their

:02:08. > :02:12.big game so it is a tough one. Joe Schmidt has been a very successful

:02:13. > :02:17.provincial coach with two Heineken cup victories. It is much different,

:02:18. > :02:23.though, coaching an international team. He was the popular choice. But

:02:24. > :02:29.he was also the right choice to take this team forward. He will be used

:02:30. > :02:33.to a season-long preparation, but now he has limited preparation, P

:02:34. > :02:37.has his own ideas is trying to bring on that group of players, and he has

:02:38. > :02:41.to do it quickly. It is all about results. There is huge expectation

:02:42. > :02:47.around his arrival which needs to translate into winning performances.

:02:48. > :02:49.Optimism is one thing they have. The last time these two teams met was

:02:50. > :02:57.back in 2010. The skipper at 42 years of age is

:02:58. > :03:12.going to lead to this one. Well, the traditional sirens start

:03:13. > :03:18.didn't strike fear into Northern Ireland -- into Ireland. It wasn't

:03:19. > :03:29.long before the Samoans hit back with a try of their own.

:03:30. > :03:42.Wonderfully creative! Stringer and O'Gara got a hard-fought victory.

:03:43. > :03:49.What do you make of Joe Schmidt's first selection? It is interesting.

:03:50. > :03:59.He hasn't got full strength. He has got a very strong bench. Healy,

:04:00. > :04:04.O'Brien, you would expect them to start. This is an opportunity to do

:04:05. > :04:10.some experimenting. This is his only chance for that. We have a couple of

:04:11. > :04:15.selections we didn't expect, but at the same time, you've trying to

:04:16. > :04:22.balance that with the result. Do you think the coach will need that

:04:23. > :04:24.firepower like O'Connell and Healy to get Ireland over the line? We've

:04:25. > :04:29.seen the nature of the game. to get Ireland over the line? We've

:04:30. > :04:35.Some of the changes are going to be enforced. With Samoa, some players

:04:36. > :04:38.will need to come off. Tactically, you will make substitutions in the

:04:39. > :04:43.different parts of the game to capitalise on opportunities so it is

:04:44. > :04:50.a 23 man game, and I expect him to use all of the resources he has at

:04:51. > :04:56.his disposal. Here are the thoughts of the new coach on his Number Ten.

:04:57. > :05:01.I've been impressed by him. He is independent, he is quietly spoken.

:05:02. > :05:06.He's pretty strong minded at the same time. He does his homework. He

:05:07. > :05:14.knew exactly what we were doing this morning. He had the guys following

:05:15. > :05:18.his lead. And that is a good small step before he takes a grand stride

:05:19. > :05:24.this weekend. I think we are a work in progress but the work ethic is

:05:25. > :05:34.great. Hopefully, with the hard work, you will see some continuity,

:05:35. > :05:40.some ability to utilise the ball and space. And, hopefully, that will

:05:41. > :05:47.lead to a great performance. An massive opportunity for Paddy

:05:48. > :05:56.Jackson. His form has been great, he has played great. He needs

:05:57. > :06:00.experience. We all assume guys are the finished product but you never

:06:01. > :06:05.are. At his age and experience, he needs to get into his own and get

:06:06. > :06:11.something else under his belt. Is his goal-kicking erratic? He has

:06:12. > :06:15.missed a few, but we forget that the best players weren't consistent so

:06:16. > :06:20.he needs time to bed in. You don't get a lot of time but you've got to

:06:21. > :06:25.back him with this. He might miss a couple but he will get better and

:06:26. > :06:28.better. It was criticised Lott after his international debut when he

:06:29. > :06:32.missed a lot of kicks. But he took it on the chin and he really has

:06:33. > :06:39.matured as a red player in the last 12 months. That's the thing. He's

:06:40. > :06:43.relating back but he's very mature. He is very good, but he doesn't

:06:44. > :06:52.listen to people when they say he is good or bad. He is very self

:06:53. > :06:57.critical and analytical and he knows what he needs to do. It is about

:06:58. > :07:02.work ethic. If you identify weaknesses, you get better. He has

:07:03. > :07:06.applied himself certainly, and we have seen some wonderful kicking

:07:07. > :07:12.performances through this season. Let's take a quick check on the

:07:13. > :07:16.Samoan team. Whatever 15 they pick, we know they are going to be

:07:17. > :07:23.abrasive and physical. Yes, they've matured as a team. If you go back a

:07:24. > :07:30.few years, we expected the big hits. One of these guys are now playing

:07:31. > :07:34.professionally, they are playing more structured, so they know how to

:07:35. > :07:37.control the game better than they used to. They will bring the

:07:38. > :07:42.physicality. They are missing some players but you can be sure that

:07:43. > :07:51.that team is very balanced. Very few guys over 30, a lot of them playing

:07:52. > :07:55.professionally. That is solid. Eight of them today help beat Wales last

:07:56. > :07:59.year so they will be a tough that to crack. It is quality. Not only are

:08:00. > :08:08.they playing in Europe but for the top teams. You've got them at

:08:09. > :08:14.Northampton, Toulouse. These are guys being exposed to the top end of

:08:15. > :08:18.European rugby and they will look to bring that experience through to the

:08:19. > :08:22.international arena, lose the struck -- use the structures they've got

:08:23. > :08:27.and combine it with the power and pace. For the Samoans, this is their

:08:28. > :08:35.one big game in the Autumn Internationals. They then he got one

:08:36. > :08:38.nation they've got to play. They will play the French Barbarians,

:08:39. > :08:43.which will not matter to them, and they will play Georgia, so this is

:08:44. > :08:47.their big game. Thank you for the moment. Time to see how Ireland will

:08:48. > :08:53.fare against this Samoan team who have beaten Scotland, Wales and

:08:54. > :08:55.Italy in the last 12 months. Reggie Corrigan and Jim Neilly are

:08:56. > :09:10.the commentators. It is a very warm good evening. It

:09:11. > :09:16.is cold, crisp and dry. We will have a minute silence in memory of Peter

:09:17. > :09:22.Faialofa who died earlier this week at the age of 54. And straight into

:09:23. > :10:51.the anthem of Samoa. A fairly decent number of Samoan

:10:52. > :10:57.supporters at Lansdowne Road. More than 40,000 seats occupied. The

:10:58. > :11:20.biggest attendance here for what is a good time.

:11:21. > :12:32.Come the power and the glory. We have come to answer our country's

:12:33. > :12:35.call. From the four proud provinces of

:12:36. > :12:45.Ireland. Ireland, Ireland.

:12:46. > :12:49.Together standing tall. Shoulder to shoulder.

:12:50. > :13:11.We'll answer Ireland's call. Ireland, Ireland.

:13:12. > :13:22.Together standing tall. Shoulder to shoulder.

:13:23. > :13:36.We'll answer Ireland's call. We'll answer Ireland's call.

:13:37. > :13:46.Jamie Heaslip takes his top off, as does Rob Kearney, they are Lyons

:13:47. > :14:39.players. A great looking back 34 Samoa.

:14:40. > :14:49.Looking at the replacement panel for Ireland, the pitch is in fantastic

:14:50. > :14:55.condition. The Irish team line up and wait for the challenge which

:14:56. > :15:01.will be laid down by the Samoans. It is their version of the Haka. The

:15:02. > :15:10.skipper, over ten years ago when Ireland beat Samoa, you remember

:15:11. > :15:15.that day well. I do indeed. Memories, good memories, slightly

:15:16. > :15:20.different conditions to this. It was about 33 degrees over there with 98%

:15:21. > :15:27.humidity. It was a hot day. But it is a beautiful evening. This is the

:15:28. > :15:32.really only serious game the Samoans have at the moment. And they are

:15:33. > :15:35.number seven in the rankings. Should France and Wales both lose,

:15:36. > :15:45.Testament the Samoans could move up to fifth. Pressure to get results

:15:46. > :15:49.today, but the Samoans are justified in their rankings and they will

:15:50. > :15:54.create a big challenge even though they are missing players. A big test

:15:55. > :16:01.for Ireland. A great four Nations tournament in June, they beat South

:16:02. > :16:05.Africa and Italy. They are fielding ten of the side that played against

:16:06. > :16:09.South Africa so this is a very good side. A couple of players missing

:16:10. > :16:14.and not available and players injured. They will lay down this

:16:15. > :16:18.challenge to Jamie Heaslip and his Irish side. And they have brought

:16:19. > :16:55.along their own leader of the Haka. They are obviously not feeling the

:16:56. > :17:04.cold and they have no sense of emotion, Brian O'Driscoll and this

:17:05. > :17:14.Irish side. The Schmidt era gets underway. When Barnes and Luke

:17:15. > :17:19.Pierce are the officials -- the assistance. And the Commissioner is

:17:20. > :17:26.from Scotland. The referee is Steve Walsh. Conditions are perfect.

:17:27. > :17:30.Ideal, and from an Irish point of view, they would want good

:17:31. > :17:37.conditions to get off to a good start. It would have been nothing

:17:38. > :17:40.worse than wind and rain. But it is absolutely perfect here at the Aviva

:17:41. > :17:52.Stadium and hopefully it will lead to entertaining. The kick-off by

:17:53. > :17:57.Ireland. Tusi Pisi was born in New Zealand and he and everybody else

:17:58. > :18:03.would prefer it if they could be supplied with a football! What are

:18:04. > :18:08.they doing? Where is the football? It has been handed to somebody in

:18:09. > :18:15.the sidelines who wants to hang onto it. Steve Walsh are saying, can we

:18:16. > :18:21.have it in the middle of the park? -- is saying. An element of fast!

:18:22. > :18:32.They have overcome those difficulties now. -- farce. Has that

:18:33. > :18:36.gone to ten metres? It has not, but Ireland have swept it up. The

:18:37. > :18:41.referee has decided Ireland knocked it forward. That is very

:18:42. > :18:45.interesting. The ball did not make it over the ten metre line when it

:18:46. > :18:50.was played so I thought it would be brought back for a scrum. Steve

:18:51. > :18:55.Walsh seemed to come up with a different interpretation. Unless the

:18:56. > :19:02.laws have changed, that should have been a scrimmage back in the middle

:19:03. > :19:08.of the park. Once they play at, they have to go for the ball. But Ireland

:19:09. > :19:17.had the intent is to play so they have gone for the scrum. A big day

:19:18. > :19:22.for 24-year-old Leinster prop Jack McGrath. A first cap for him. He has

:19:23. > :19:31.worked very hard. That is good by Ireland. It is going to be a scrum

:19:32. > :19:36.for Ireland. A superb start for Jack McGrath, perfect body position.

:19:37. > :19:43.Power came through and he absolutely destroyed his opponent. He has given

:19:44. > :19:49.away two kilos to his opposite man but that did not affect him. He has

:19:50. > :19:53.a strong case for that position. Cian Healy, on the Irish bench, will

:19:54. > :20:06.be thinking, what have I let myself in for? Jack McGrath did very well

:20:07. > :20:12.against the Tigers. That is a solid looking Irish scrum. Slipped away to

:20:13. > :20:33.O'Driscoll. In the middle of the park is Ole

:20:34. > :20:37.Avei. The hooker for Samoa. Ireland get the penalty, so a good set

:20:38. > :20:42.piece. A pressure produced on the early penalty. We are seeing a lot

:20:43. > :20:48.of power in the Irish pack. A scrum have been excellent. A fantastic

:20:49. > :20:52.setup, everybody is organised and in good positions and getting the drive

:20:53. > :20:57.one. Before this game, the that would be crucial would be the set

:20:58. > :21:01.piece. If they could dominate the line-out and set piece, but the

:21:02. > :21:05.scrum was going to be questionable but they are dominating that area.

:21:06. > :21:16.If that continues and they invite that kind of quality, it could be a

:21:17. > :21:26.long way for the Samoans. Paddy Jackson. And Joe Schmidt does not

:21:27. > :21:29.give much away. All eyes on the 21-year-old Paddy Jackson. His fifth

:21:30. > :21:44.Irish cap. He struck it nicely. It did not look

:21:45. > :21:47.easy. Such a lot of pressure on goalkeepers and Paddy Jackson has

:21:48. > :21:52.but Ireland ahead with just over three minutes played. It is

:21:53. > :21:56.important for Paddy Jackson to get that cake and get his confidence

:21:57. > :22:01.where it needs to be. That will settle him into the game nicely.

:22:02. > :22:08.Already, we are seeing intent from the Irish team. If they get that

:22:09. > :22:15.quality ball from the scrum, the Irish team could do real damage in

:22:16. > :22:22.that area. Gordon D'Arcy has let that loose. Just not concentrating.

:22:23. > :22:28.His opposite number Johnny Leota comes through. And this is the

:22:29. > :22:38.hooker. Ole Avei. Good solid work at the breakdown by Henry. Teofilo

:22:39. > :22:46.Paulo, good work by him. And that has given the Samoans a chance. But

:22:47. > :22:59.nudged forward by the men in blue, Viliamu Afatia comes through. There

:23:00. > :23:05.was a mix-up is Johnny Leota came through. Just got knocked on. The

:23:06. > :23:09.Samoans are not afraid to have a go. A mistake was punished very quickly,

:23:10. > :23:14.the Samoans were on the ball and looking to move it when they got the

:23:15. > :23:19.opportunity. After five minutes gone, this is the sixth game between

:23:20. > :23:27.these sides. Ireland have won four, an impressive win in 1996. 40 points

:23:28. > :23:37.against 25 at Lansdowne Road. The old Lansdowne Road. Much loved.

:23:38. > :23:40.He thought about the pass and changed his mind. That was rather

:23:41. > :24:10.awkward. Taken in by Samoa. This is Tii Paulo, he likes to run.

:24:11. > :24:16.A good wraparound and that is well done. There is a big gap. The right

:24:17. > :24:20.wing had come right across the wing, this is good stuff for the visitors

:24:21. > :24:27.and it shows what they can do and the game they like to play. Good

:24:28. > :24:33.tackle by Mike McCarthy. Jack McGrath thought better of putting

:24:34. > :24:40.his hands on. A penalty against Mike Ross. He got himself offside. That

:24:41. > :24:44.is what happens if you are struggling and the defensive line is

:24:45. > :24:53.broken. Too easy from the Samoans with a simple wraparound pass which

:24:54. > :24:57.caught everybody out. I am watching the way the Samoans are setting up,

:24:58. > :25:01.they are putting very few layers into the breakdown area so there are

:25:02. > :25:07.plenty of opportunities in the backline with big men taking balls

:25:08. > :25:11.and running at smaller men in the Irish backline. And when the Irish

:25:12. > :25:16.defence is scrambling, they find themselves offside and that was Mike

:25:17. > :25:24.Ross slow getting back onside and now the Samoans have a great chance

:25:25. > :25:33.to equal the scoreline. Concern in the Samoan camp about their tight

:25:34. > :25:36.head prop. Logovi'i Mulipola seems to have done something to a calf

:25:37. > :25:42.muscle and is having that heavily strapped. But he is under severe

:25:43. > :25:49.pressure in those scrums. He is turning game because the pressure is

:25:50. > :25:55.coming in from Jack McGrath on the outside and he may well have injured

:25:56. > :26:03.his calf muscle. Tusi Pisi in front and he makes no mistake and we are

:26:04. > :26:07.back to level pegging. I am not sure the tight head prop will be able to

:26:08. > :26:11.continue, he is hobbling very badly. Ireland's inability to make

:26:12. > :26:18.something of the restart kick has cost him dear and he is going off.

:26:19. > :26:21.That is not good for Samoa because they already struggling, you have do

:26:22. > :26:24.imagine if that is the first choice that the second choice might also

:26:25. > :26:30.find it difficult against Jack McGrath. It will be interesting to

:26:31. > :26:38.see in the next scrum how that affects the Samoans. A sympathetic

:26:39. > :26:44.round of applause for the player from the Leicester Tigers. And the

:26:45. > :26:50.player coming on is James Johnston, easier to pronounce! And here comes

:26:51. > :26:55.Brian O'Driscoll. It did not go to anybody in particular. The ball is

:26:56. > :27:01.all over the place and Jack McGrath could not control it. James

:27:02. > :27:09.Johnston, number 18, all over it. The referee is playing advantage to

:27:10. > :27:16.the Irish knock forward. Kahn Fotuali'i trying to organise his

:27:17. > :27:19.troops. Ireland and Rory Best try to hold them up, no advantage to the

:27:20. > :27:25.men in blue. We will see how Mr Johnson gets on. It will be

:27:26. > :27:29.interesting. The Samoans are going into the contact area very high and

:27:30. > :27:34.that is playing into the hands of the Irish team. The Irish or expert

:27:35. > :27:43.poachers and they are good at holding the man up and avoiding them

:27:44. > :27:47.going to ground. -- or expert. The Samoans are facilitating that so

:27:48. > :27:58.they need to get to ground quicker and provide a better scrum-half

:27:59. > :28:03.Hall. Another -- ball. Another injury.

:28:04. > :28:10.Brian O'Driscoll is shaking his head, not happy about that flick

:28:11. > :28:16.which did not know to anybody in particular. When they work, they

:28:17. > :28:20.look wonderful. But if they are out by the smallest amount, it creates

:28:21. > :28:25.an opportunity for the opposition and the Samoans were quick to react.

:28:26. > :28:30.They got there in numbers. Samoa will not want to lose another

:28:31. > :28:34.player. They have had to make a late change in the replacements panel and

:28:35. > :28:48.the coaching staff looking anxious. But happy enough with the scoreline,

:28:49. > :28:53.three each. Ofisa Treviranus played for several seasons with the men

:28:54. > :29:04.from the West. How it works out, I do not know. The man on the right

:29:05. > :29:11.wing is the brother. Samoan genealogy is not my strong point! I

:29:12. > :29:15.would not be able to help you! The Samoans are trying to get the height

:29:16. > :29:19.and trying to lock down the right-hand side but they seem unable

:29:20. > :29:29.to do that with Jack McGrath and Rory Best opposite. Difficulties in

:29:30. > :29:38.the scrum for the Samoans. Somebody is playing drums. This is new for me

:29:39. > :29:43.at Lansdowne Road. That is another good scrum from Jack McGrath. The

:29:44. > :29:49.human -- the Samoan scrum under huge pressure on -- and if Jack McGrath

:29:50. > :29:55.stops now and comes off, he will be happy. It started with Jack McGrath

:29:56. > :29:59.at Mike Ross on the tight head side, and this is the most difficult

:30:00. > :30:04.thing, but his side of the scrum up, got the power, and the three

:30:05. > :30:10.combining brilliantly together. To see that power reading from the

:30:11. > :30:14.tight head side, it does suggest that as this game goes on and

:30:15. > :30:20.tiredness comes into it, the Samoans will be under massive pressure at

:30:21. > :30:27.scrum time. Has the new sequence made a difference? I think it has

:30:28. > :30:46.made things different, there seems to be less collapse.

:30:47. > :31:03.The new scrum Lawes are set up to hurry this up. Free kicks could come

:31:04. > :31:48.aplenty. Conor Murray, his 20th cap this evening.

:31:49. > :31:56.Inside the 22 of the opposition. And across the line they go. The

:31:57. > :32:03.Samoans, I have a feeling, will get a scrummage. That was a nice little

:32:04. > :32:07.sequence. It was. I am very interested to see the Samoans are

:32:08. > :32:11.committing nobody at the breakdown. They are allowing Ireland to have

:32:12. > :32:14.free ball, to move it as much as they want. It is an indication they

:32:15. > :32:21.fear the backline and they are worried about them getting past

:32:22. > :32:24.them. But they need to compete at the breakdown. They need to slow

:32:25. > :32:30.down the quick ball. If Ireland continue in this vein and the iron

:32:31. > :32:34.out all those little errors, you'd have to imagine it is only a matter

:32:35. > :32:40.of time before they start to break down the Samoan defence. Kahn

:32:41. > :32:52.Fotuali'i wasn't able to go to the four Nations tournament in June. A

:32:53. > :32:58.slightly better scrum. That was an interesting dummy. There they go.

:32:59. > :33:10.That was a wonderful tackle by O'Driscoll.

:33:11. > :33:24.Well, O'Driscoll, still plenty of pace in those 35-year-old legs. Cut

:33:25. > :33:27.him down beautifully. It was McFadden he gave the penalty

:33:28. > :33:33.against. He released himself from the tackle and went back in, and

:33:34. > :33:36.according to the referee, he lost his footing and wasn't supporting

:33:37. > :33:43.his own weight at the crucial moment as he put his hands on the ball. You

:33:44. > :33:47.can go in and compete, he is in a good position originally but loses

:33:48. > :33:49.his feet. And a penalty given against them, some might say a

:33:50. > :34:19.little bit harsh. That's knocked forward by Samoa. The

:34:20. > :34:59.referee decided otherwise. The crowd have disagreed with him.

:35:00. > :35:13.What a piece of acceleration there. Good tackle. Johnson is in the

:35:14. > :35:19.middle of that. Ireland will be relieved to get that penalty.

:35:20. > :35:24.There's all sorts of gaps opening up but the Samoans are creating those

:35:25. > :35:30.gaps. And in particular George Pisi is creating them. He's taking on the

:35:31. > :35:40.defence of Ireland, and he has got through a number of tackles. He is

:35:41. > :35:44.making a real impression. They are bringing in their players back on

:35:45. > :35:50.the inside and it has caught the Irish on two occasions. The Irish

:35:51. > :35:54.defence seemed to be standing off and a little bit naive in the fact

:35:55. > :36:03.he is coming into the line. He almost got away there. A bit of a

:36:04. > :36:11.stoppage, some tension -- some attention to Jack Lam. It's

:36:12. > :36:17.interesting watching the Samoans. In attack, they look confident, they

:36:18. > :36:21.are happy on the ball, but the opposite is true when they are in

:36:22. > :36:25.defence. The defensive line is just waiting for the Irish to run at

:36:26. > :36:29.them. They need to change that around. They need to get off the

:36:30. > :36:34.defensive line, both forward and get in the faces of the Irish backline

:36:35. > :36:38.and put them under pressure. If they stand back and if they let the Irish

:36:39. > :36:45.move the ball, they will be in trouble. A lot of them have been

:36:46. > :36:50.playing in the Rugby 7's circuit. The style of game they play, they

:36:51. > :36:56.are very confident going forward. Often, the defence lets them down

:36:57. > :36:59.because that is an aspect that needs to be looked at. That's got to

:37:00. > :37:24.change because they will be punished by this team.

:37:25. > :37:34.After that early setback, Samoa are gaining in confidence.

:37:35. > :37:43.That was a clever kick by Paddy Jackson.

:37:44. > :38:00.He's more annoyed at the fact he didn't manage to take that ball

:38:01. > :38:05.because it was a very bad ball from Pisi which almost went behind him.

:38:06. > :38:11.McFadden was in a good position, but he was in the end unfortunate that

:38:12. > :38:21.he wasn't able to hang onto it. That was a let off for the Samoans. Jack

:38:22. > :38:26.McGrath is having a word about the scrummaging law. You can expect some

:38:27. > :38:29.pressure from this scrum. Every scrum now for Ireland, both

:38:30. > :38:34.opposition and their owner, is going to be ones they will attack. All the

:38:35. > :38:42.back row is standing down on this one. A serious surge on this one.

:38:43. > :38:48.If the Samoans can win this, they might think of running this. A

:38:49. > :38:57.slightly better scrum by the visitors.

:38:58. > :39:11.They might have turned that one over. Well, they haven't, but that

:39:12. > :39:16.was great work from D'Arcy. Everyone was in there. That is the thing with

:39:17. > :39:19.this Irish team and the way they play. If they see a sniff of an

:39:20. > :39:24.opportunity the ball can be turned over, they are counter rucking,

:39:25. > :39:28.going back through the middle and driving the Samoans back off the

:39:29. > :39:32.ball, which is what you want from your team. Interesting enough, in

:39:33. > :39:36.that phase of play, the Samoans had about five players walk on the

:39:37. > :39:39.left-hand side to the island three in defence. If they could have found

:39:40. > :39:44.some quick ball, Ireland could have been caught out but because of the

:39:45. > :39:49.rate work at the breakdown and D'Arcy in particular, you can see

:39:50. > :39:55.those two arms going up in the air to show the referee you're legally

:39:56. > :39:59.going in. That work alone got the turnover for Ireland. Luckily

:40:00. > :40:02.enough, as I said, because of the overlap on the left-hand side the

:40:03. > :40:11.Samoans had created. Initially, that was a great tackle by Paddy Jackson.

:40:12. > :40:16.He has picked up that loose ball, made some ground, he has kicked

:40:17. > :40:19.cleverly, kept the ball in play, it wouldn't be their intention to put

:40:20. > :40:26.the ball out. He has deliberately kept the ball in play.

:40:27. > :40:36.So, so far, a very good start from Jackson. Still three apiece with

:40:37. > :40:47.almost 19 minutes gone. They've got to man out to the far side, D'Arcy

:40:48. > :40:55.and Bowe. O'Connell looking directly back from the scrum. If they can get

:40:56. > :41:03.quick ball, this is an ideal situation where a team would look

:41:04. > :41:10.for a ball straight back to the number eight's feed. The defenders

:41:11. > :41:17.are split. They've got D'Arcy on the right side and Bowe to worry about.

:41:18. > :41:22.There are also looking at Heaslip. Jackson has options on the inside

:41:23. > :41:35.and the outside as well. The way defence is going, the scrum has been

:41:36. > :41:40.won and the penalty has been given. At the edge of Paddy Jackson's

:41:41. > :41:46.range. He might be asked to put it in the corner. We will see. That was

:41:47. > :41:51.a good scrum and I think he will go for three points. The important

:41:52. > :41:58.thing to do in a game like this is to try to get points on the board,

:41:59. > :42:03.push away from the Samoans, if possible, and put out into their

:42:04. > :42:07.minds. As the game progresses, you might find gaps in the defence. You

:42:08. > :42:13.don't need to score tries at this early stage of the games by forcing

:42:14. > :42:18.it. The opportunity is there to take three points, and that is a wise

:42:19. > :42:22.decision. Paddy Jackson was the only source of points when Ireland played

:42:23. > :42:38.in the Six Nations. He struck that nicely. That is a

:42:39. > :42:45.very good kick by Jackson. That is a confidence boosting kick for Ireland

:42:46. > :42:49.and Paddy Jackson, and for the fans. That was a great kick. The

:42:50. > :42:57.interesting thing is that there was at least ten metres to spare on that

:42:58. > :42:57.kick. So, you know, he wouldn't be renowned for his distance kicking,

:42:58. > :44:15.Knocked forward by the Samoans. The initial knock forward was by the men

:44:16. > :44:22.in blue and it is an Irish scrummage. The differences the

:44:23. > :44:25.Samoans are committing a lot more people to the breakdowns. They are

:44:26. > :44:29.securing and getting ball. That means they don't have the same

:44:30. > :44:34.numbers and run as they did have for those opening 20 minutes. And just

:44:35. > :44:38.at that point, they pretty run out of numbers. It was a bad mistake, a

:44:39. > :44:41.knock on that shouldn't have happened. It was well marshalled and

:44:42. > :44:47.probably would have been driven back into tackle. It is very difficult

:44:48. > :44:52.for the Samoans. What do they do? Commit less to the breakdown and not

:44:53. > :44:57.get to the ball? They really need to be committing three to four players

:44:58. > :45:03.maximum to every breakdown so the players have to make sure they are

:45:04. > :45:16.making an impact. Well, there is the view the referee is getting. Ireland

:45:17. > :45:22.are just inside their own half. Peter O'Mahony captained the team in

:45:23. > :45:31.the USA. A both of those teams -- both of those -- they won both of

:45:32. > :45:36.those games. I am surprised Steve Walsh has not taken a stand on this

:45:37. > :45:45.area and has not started giving free kicks because it is a bit messy.

:45:46. > :45:51.Chris Henry and Jamie Heaslip are looking to their right to see what

:45:52. > :46:03.is going on with the Samoan defence. It is about winning a Queen ball. --

:46:04. > :46:08.a Queen ball. -- clean. That had to be able penalty and he is giving

:46:09. > :46:17.them a severe warning. Johnston is taking that down, no question. It is

:46:18. > :46:20.clear to anybody, the tight head prop is on his knees before the Wall

:46:21. > :46:27.has come in. When you see the shoulders topping the low height and

:46:28. > :46:31.the head dropping to the ground, it you know what the problem is. A good

:46:32. > :46:37.kick by Paddy Jackson has put Ireland in a good position as we

:46:38. > :46:43.approach 25 minutes. Samoa have conceded four penalties. Both of

:46:44. > :46:48.those have been at the scrummage. A bit of damp weather and Rory Best is

:46:49. > :47:00.making sure there is nothing damp about the ball. Well taken by Devin

:47:01. > :47:06.Toner. Chris Henry has it. Ireland shunting forward, they have got a

:47:07. > :47:11.head of steam. Samoa are coming in and making no attempt to disguise

:47:12. > :47:16.that. The referee has his hand out for the penalty, can Ireland

:47:17. > :47:19.complete the job? Henry is in the middle. They seem to be over the

:47:20. > :47:34.line! The referee has given the try. Conor Murray at the bottom of it but

:47:35. > :47:38.it is Peter O'Mahony who has got his first Irish international try. Well

:47:39. > :47:43.worked all the way. You could see the Irish team, the forward players

:47:44. > :47:55.together as the kit went into touch, a good touch by Paddy Jackson. --

:47:56. > :48:00.kit. -- kick. It is important to have total upfront between the

:48:01. > :48:05.forwards. Get yourself going and they set it up perfectly. The

:48:06. > :48:10.important thing is they were patient. They had a penalty but they

:48:11. > :48:17.did not get frustrated, they did not get overly excited and nobody went

:48:18. > :48:29.on their own. A good try, a good start. A 20 metre shunned by the

:48:30. > :48:34.Irish pack. -- shunt. A tight angle by Jackson. No conversion. I think

:48:35. > :48:42.George Smith will be pretty pleased. There has been decent backplate I

:48:43. > :48:51.Ireland. -- act play by Ireland. -- back. They have worked on those week

:48:52. > :48:56.after week. A lot of experience. Nobody better than a Munster man to

:48:57. > :49:03.know how to get over the line. Peter O'Mahony, 24 years of age, the

:49:04. > :49:08.Munster captain for this season. Playing his 13th game in a row for

:49:09. > :49:17.Ireland. Let's see if Ireland can gather this again. Well taken by

:49:18. > :49:25.Fergus McFadden. Outside the 22. Murray is looking to kick. That was

:49:26. > :49:31.well gathered by the Samoans. Good strong work. That was by 35 macro.

:49:32. > :49:47.Good stuff by the men in blue. A good switch of direction, to CPC

:49:48. > :49:59.-7 macro. Well tackled by Chris Henry. Taken on by Jack Lam, that

:50:00. > :50:04.was nudged forward. I think that was called for Steve Walsh. A slight

:50:05. > :50:08.nudge in the contact area, a good call by the touch judge that was

:50:09. > :50:21.missed by the referee. Tried to get that flowed and a slight knock-on.

:50:22. > :50:29.-- that flowed. -- off-load. As the Samoans try to launch the attack,

:50:30. > :50:35.Tusi Pisi is winning -- is running sideways towards the line and is

:50:36. > :50:42.putting on pressure. He needs to get the past slightly earlier. It is

:50:43. > :50:49.about primary possession and Samoa have very little coming up to half

:50:50. > :50:59.an hour played. Steve Walsh is going to have to take a more acerbic view

:51:00. > :51:05.of this. I think you will, he has already given a penalty against this

:51:06. > :51:12.-- a think you will, he has already given a penalty against the Samoans.

:51:13. > :51:13.Unless he does, we will watch a number of resets at a time and that

:51:14. > :51:27.is not what we want. Devin Toner is almost seven feet

:51:28. > :51:39.tall, the tallest man to play for Ireland by some distance. A lovely

:51:40. > :51:45.pass, Brian O'Driscoll is back inside. That was well read by the

:51:46. > :51:53.blue defence. Mike McCarthy steps it up. Chris Henry, did he come in from

:51:54. > :51:59.the side? He did not, but somebody went over the top and prevented the

:52:00. > :52:05.ball from coming back, it might have been the Irish try scorer. A lovely

:52:06. > :52:14.pass by Jackson. Very well read by the Samoan defence. He just mind it

:52:15. > :52:21.up perfectly and for a moment, I thought McFadden was gone. A

:52:22. > :52:29.brilliant defensive tackle. Offence and Steve fans as they call it. --

:52:30. > :52:32.defence. I thought the Samoans were going to kick the ball into the

:52:33. > :52:41.corner but they went for more points on the board. If this is

:52:42. > :52:44.successful, this could be a converted try. They are doing a

:52:45. > :53:08.Mexican wave. They will be dizzy! Tusi Pisi has given that a decent

:53:09. > :53:18.kick and that is a very good kick. He plays outside half for

:53:19. > :53:25.Wellington. He is on -- he was born in Apia. The Samoans need to keep in

:53:26. > :53:30.touch with the game. They cannot afford to let Ireland get away too

:53:31. > :53:38.much. Not the most orthodox style, what it went over. The referee is

:53:39. > :53:47.happy enough to play on. It came back on the Samoan side. Kahn

:53:48. > :53:52.Fotuali'i is complaining and Ireland giveaway another penalty. A lack of

:53:53. > :53:57.discipline. A clear call by Steve Walsh, a green release. I think he

:53:58. > :54:03.gave the penalty against Brian O'Driscoll. Held onto it to one.

:54:04. > :54:10.O'Driscoll shaking his head, -- held onto it for too long. That is a good

:54:11. > :54:18.kick to set up a decent field position, courtesy of Tusi Pisi?.

:54:19. > :54:23.You mentioned the Mexican wave and people getting involved, it has gone

:54:24. > :54:28.a bit quiet in the stadium. There is an expectation for fans they were

:54:29. > :54:32.going to see intrinsic backline moves that we have seen Joe Smit

:54:33. > :54:37.bring to teams before -- Joe Schmidt. There has not been much

:54:38. > :54:43.penetration at the back end, they have not been able to get past the

:54:44. > :54:47.Samoans as much as they thought they could. That is a free against

:54:48. > :54:59.Ireland, taken quickly either Samoans. That climate takes it

:55:00. > :55:16.forward. This is Tii Paulo, from the Cardiff Blues. A good sidestep by

:55:17. > :55:26.Jack Lam. Mike Ross stands firm. Good work by Mike McCarthy. But

:55:27. > :55:29.Ireland have given away the penalty. That was given against McCarthy.

:55:30. > :55:34.Steve Walsh has been very clear in his directions. He is ordering the

:55:35. > :55:40.players away and he is calling out the numbers. You can clearly hear

:55:41. > :55:46.him saying that. But Samoa on making ground in that area. They do not

:55:47. > :55:50.have many options outside. The back seem to get tied up and it looks

:55:51. > :55:56.like everything is broken down but somebody takes it up. I am

:55:57. > :56:00.particularly impressed with the hooker. When they take that direct

:56:01. > :56:02.route, they make ground and penalties like this, suddenly they

:56:03. > :56:14.are only two points behind. Getting a bit of treatment, I think

:56:15. > :56:19.that is Chris Henry. And that is of the post! McFadden takes it from

:56:20. > :56:38.Devin Toner. Good support from Rory Best. Another

:56:39. > :56:49.man who has captained Ireland. That is not a bad kick by Tommy Bowe. And

:56:50. > :56:54.the Samoan fullback had no option but to step into touch. He did not

:56:55. > :56:59.even gather the ball and it was a clever decision. Ireland keeping the

:57:00. > :57:04.ball in play, that is putting pressure on Samoa. That pressure is

:57:05. > :57:09.present because of the good chasing wine. He could feel the green

:57:10. > :57:15.jerseys breathing down his neck and he knocked the ball into touch.

:57:16. > :57:25.Ireland have lost Chris Henry so that means a reappearance by Sean

:57:26. > :57:34.O'Brien. A bit of a trip, I think that was accidental. The crowd

:57:35. > :57:38.disagree. Well is issued by Rob Carney. -- well-positioned. A good

:57:39. > :57:51.strike with his left foot. That is moved out wide to 25 macro.

:57:52. > :58:07.-- 25 macro. Just brushing off Sean O'Brien,

:58:08. > :58:14.which does not happen too often. A good forward ball by the Samoans.

:58:15. > :58:21.Jack Lam goes on his own. Good work in the breakdown by Ireland. Gordon

:58:22. > :58:27.D'Arcy takes his weight on the feet. The referee says, play on. Good work

:58:28. > :58:35.by Jack McGrath. A good steel. And he has won a foot in the scrum. I

:58:36. > :58:39.have been watching him play at various junior levels and they are

:58:40. > :58:45.playing a lot of rugby for Leinster and he has worked hard at his game

:58:46. > :58:51.and his fitness and his strength. Everything you have said is correct.

:58:52. > :58:54.He is really committed to making it as a professional rugby player and

:58:55. > :59:00.he has made sacrifices to get to this level, he deserves to be there

:59:01. > :59:08.on his form and he has held his own today in the scrum. He has been very

:59:09. > :59:16.good. And in the loose. Three and a half minutes remaining. After the

:59:17. > :59:19.try by Peter O'Mahony, Ireland are taking the foot off the gas. They

:59:20. > :59:26.would dearly like something before the interval. A lot of mistakes by

:59:27. > :59:31.Ireland. Going into contact. I am sure that is something Joe Schmidt

:59:32. > :59:34.will talk to them about at half-time, cut out the mistakes. A

:59:35. > :59:52.good Irish scrum. McFadden passes for word. The palace

:59:53. > :59:57.was forward but every single Samoa on this side was offside, so as he

:59:58. > :00:02.tried to run into the area, there is nothing but five players in an

:00:03. > :00:08.offside position. It should be a penalty to Ireland in that situation

:00:09. > :00:17.because it was almost forced forward pass because of the wall of blue in

:00:18. > :00:25.the way. The referee wasn't looking and his assistants were not looking

:00:26. > :00:30.either. Well, Ireland have made more and missed more tackles. The Samoans

:00:31. > :00:34.have been outstanding in terms of the carries. Statistically, Samoa

:00:35. > :00:40.have had the better of the first half so far. But the school board

:00:41. > :00:48.does not reflect that. They should have had three points. There wasn't

:00:49. > :01:01.one player following up to get the rebound off the post.

:01:02. > :01:14.Sean O'Brien, first game at this level since the Lions tour.

:01:15. > :01:28.Referee has given a penalty, or scrummage? There was an off-load,

:01:29. > :01:34.but he was under a lot of pressure as he was receiving that ball.

:01:35. > :01:55.Joe Schmidt, with his first half of international rugby under his belt.

:01:56. > :02:04.Still a very tasty Irish bench to be unleashed. The scrum has gone down

:02:05. > :02:50.but the referee is happy to play at. McFadden can't quite make it. Touch

:02:51. > :02:54.judge puts his flag up. O'Driscoll denied one of his trademark close

:02:55. > :03:01.range schools. The referee will bring them back to have a look.

:03:02. > :03:14.There may have been a legal tackle after the ball was passed. I missed

:03:15. > :03:21.that one myself. I was busy looking back at Johnny Leota. He was trying

:03:22. > :03:32.to make the tackle, and Steve Walsh made a great tackle. Great off-load

:03:33. > :03:37.by Ireland. O'Driscoll did his trademark move, but good defence

:03:38. > :03:44.from the Samoans, just managed to keep them out. I think it was a foot

:03:45. > :03:52.in touch. He didn't get across the line but we will have to see if

:03:53. > :03:58.there was an offence before that. Now, what was the problem? The ball

:03:59. > :04:10.was passed. Oh, that is dangerous. Now that is dangerous. I am pretty

:04:11. > :04:14.sure that was George Pisi. I expect there will be action. There will be

:04:15. > :04:18.action taken against that. They have come down very strongly this year

:04:19. > :04:36.against anything which looks like that tackle. Is it a penalty only?

:04:37. > :04:45.His whole upper body was lifted way up the and the horizontal and he was

:04:46. > :04:54.dumped down. I think it could be a yellow card. He has asked for a

:04:55. > :04:59.recommendation. I don't know what the delay is because there it is up

:05:00. > :05:06.on the screen. There is the tackle. Up he goes, down he came. That was

:05:07. > :05:12.dangerous. He eased off just as Bowe was reaching the ground. It looks

:05:13. > :05:18.pretty bad. He has made his decision now but it looks like he flicks the

:05:19. > :05:23.legs up into the air. The issue is he got up, he was twisted and he

:05:24. > :05:33.wasn't put around safely. It is a yellow card. -- put to ground. That

:05:34. > :05:38.is pretty good of the referee. There is clear guidelines on it, everybody

:05:39. > :05:43.knows the dangers. You can see the twist in the tackle and that is the

:05:44. > :05:48.giveaway. And then the legs come up so quickly into the air. There was

:05:49. > :05:52.no care to bring the player down. Even if you've made that mistake,

:05:53. > :05:56.you don't need to do that, and you got to try to control the player.

:05:57. > :06:01.There was no control, that is a yellow card and it is a big blow.

:06:02. > :06:09.They know what they are doing at this level. He could have tackled

:06:10. > :06:16.Tommy Bowe. He chose to do the uplift. As you say, the ball was

:06:17. > :06:24.gone, there was no need for the tackle. He had gone past it at that

:06:25. > :06:36.stage. This is going to be the last of scrappy first half. That is a

:06:37. > :06:43.lovely kick. A fine kick by Paddy Jackson. Ireland will not be

:06:44. > :06:58.altogether unhappy. It has been a scrappy start from Joe Schmidt as

:06:59. > :07:08.the brand-new Irish coach. Ireland lead at Lansdowne Road, 14-6.

:07:09. > :07:17.It has been a stop start first 40 minutes. The Samoans threw down

:07:18. > :07:21.their traditional challenge, Paddy Jackson answered it. He has kicked

:07:22. > :07:28.pretty nicely in the first half. Ireland rumbled over for the only

:07:29. > :07:36.try of the half. Peter O'Mahony with the touchdown. The Samoans have kept

:07:37. > :07:39.themselves in the game thanks to Irish indiscipline. Although Paddy

:07:40. > :07:42.Jackson opened up that 8-point lead with that excellent penalty before

:07:43. > :07:50.half-time. What has been a pretty first half.

:07:51. > :07:54.It has been scrappy. It is down to the tactics more than anything.

:07:55. > :08:01.Ireland have kicked a lot of ball away. Samoa have been in possession

:08:02. > :08:05.a lot, running around. They did have to defend for a long period, but

:08:06. > :08:12.Ireland have kept their shape, they've done a good job, they've won

:08:13. > :08:17.a lot of turnovers. So there has been a lot of scrappy play. Was that

:08:18. > :08:22.the first half Joe Schmidt had imagined at the start of his

:08:23. > :08:26.tenure? Not as fluent as they would have liked, which is a clear tactic

:08:27. > :08:32.from Ireland. They are not playing in their own half, and that is

:08:33. > :08:36.unusual to see a team struggling so much at set pieces have such a glut

:08:37. > :08:40.of possession. That's come from their kicks and they've had a lot of

:08:41. > :08:44.ball in hand, but it has been that defensive work at the breakdown that

:08:45. > :08:49.has allowed Ireland to come out on top. Lots of scrums, very few

:08:50. > :08:53.line-outs, but from one of them Ireland scored that excellent try.

:08:54. > :09:00.Yes, I think they were always going to take the ball. The Samoans were

:09:01. > :09:06.always going to struggle against the Irish drive. It is classic, they

:09:07. > :09:10.kept their composure, their discipline, and you can see the

:09:11. > :09:18.Samoans falling off and Ireland keep their shape. They were in penalty

:09:19. > :09:24.territory as well. Here is good execution. They've done very well.

:09:25. > :09:29.That is the one set piece play they executed well and it led to the

:09:30. > :09:34.school. It lays down a marker against a team which prides itself

:09:35. > :09:38.in its physicality. It does. Technically, they are a team who

:09:39. > :09:43.have struggled come set pieces. The scrum has been the prosaic --

:09:44. > :09:47.pervasive feature in this game and Ireland are on top. A couple of

:09:48. > :09:50.line-outs, they have fared better in that aspect as well, so expect to

:09:51. > :09:56.see Ireland look to exploit that advantage they have there. They

:09:57. > :10:01.played a controlled game, they don't want this to get loose and the

:10:02. > :10:06.Samoans love to play with wit and tempo. Ireland have managed to

:10:07. > :10:10.control that but they will need to focus on those areas of strength in

:10:11. > :10:16.the second half. What about Paddy Jackson? He has done very well. He

:10:17. > :10:18.has made the tackles, he has also kicked well. He's missed

:10:19. > :10:25.conversion, it wasn't easy but he has been solid and he has got the

:10:26. > :10:29.backline moving. I think he is in control, he is calm and collected.

:10:30. > :10:34.He is doing what Ireland need him to do. He has kicked well but his game

:10:35. > :10:41.management has been good as well. That is one of the extracts of its

:10:42. > :10:49.game. -- that is one of the strengths of his game. We see

:10:50. > :10:54.defensively he's very brave. No area of weakness in his game. It is these

:10:55. > :10:59.refinements, this long click, real confidence builder, and overall,

:11:00. > :11:02.he's managed the game well, he is performing his role, and his

:11:03. > :11:07.distribution has been up to the mark. You surprised Ireland have

:11:08. > :11:13.kicked so much ball away in the first half? I am surprised. I would

:11:14. > :11:18.say that Joe Schmidt would say about the accuracy of the kicking. Joe

:11:19. > :11:21.Schmidt likes kicking and he uses it effectively at Leinster, but you

:11:22. > :11:26.don't kick the ball away loosely. That is a loose kick. The Samoans

:11:27. > :11:32.will run back. If you click loosely, this should be in the stand

:11:33. > :11:37.if you are playing Samoa. It hits the grass, Samoa will come back. And

:11:38. > :11:43.they are a team that thrive on this open field broken play situation.

:11:44. > :11:52.O'Driscoll gets picked up, they come back. What is the key? You've got to

:11:53. > :11:55.make them go back to their defensive line-up. You've got put it out of

:11:56. > :11:59.play because their line-out has struggled. The reason we've only had

:12:00. > :12:04.to make line-out is because we haven't kicked the ball out of play.

:12:05. > :12:09.With Samoa, you've got to create the tempo and not create those broken

:12:10. > :12:13.field situations, where they thrive. Probably Joe is saying, let's

:12:14. > :12:19.control our kicking more, let's create some opportunities. The scrum

:12:20. > :12:24.isn't glamorous part of the game. And we have seen plenty of it. It

:12:25. > :12:31.has been very effective for Ireland. Whether in a tackled offensive.

:12:32. > :12:37.Technically, they are very good. That scrum comes around, and once

:12:38. > :12:45.you get the dominance, those 50-50 calls tend to go your way. Ireland

:12:46. > :12:50.certainly have got the upper hand in that facet of play, and it is giving

:12:51. > :12:54.them possession, albeit they are not utilising it. With so much dominance

:12:55. > :12:58.there, should they have more points on the board? They shouldn't, in a

:12:59. > :13:07.way, because what has happened is that they've kicked their possession

:13:08. > :13:12.away. Most of our set pieces have been in our own half. The tactic is

:13:13. > :13:17.not to run out of our own half but kick out of our own half.

:13:18. > :13:23.Territorially, we haven't done well. So, you know, I think we need to get

:13:24. > :13:27.more field position and when we do that, we will score. Unfortunately,

:13:28. > :13:32.we have dominated the scrum but it has not been comfortable to watch.

:13:33. > :13:38.As you say, when you kick the ball away, we will take a look at the

:13:39. > :13:42.example of this, of what's Samoa can do when they get the ball.

:13:43. > :13:46.Individually, they've got the ability, the power to push through

:13:47. > :13:51.the tackle to create possession. And they like to play with wit. They are

:13:52. > :13:55.making some clean line breaks, unable to finish it off, but they

:13:56. > :13:59.are able to breakdown defences but they rely on that front foot

:14:00. > :14:04.possession which creates uncertainty defensively, which they can exploit

:14:05. > :14:07.with their power and pace. I suppose, important penalty on the

:14:08. > :14:13.stroke of half-time from Paddy Jackson. Ireland start the second

:14:14. > :14:17.half with a man up as well. They start against 14 men, they need to

:14:18. > :14:24.get some field position, grind out some scores. And the game could be

:14:25. > :14:29.over. If they don't take advantage, when Pisi comes back it is going to

:14:30. > :14:33.give them a lift. The first ten minutes will tell us a tale of

:14:34. > :14:37.whether this game will be one comfortable yet or whether it gets

:14:38. > :14:40.more difficult. That penalty at half-time certainly tips the

:14:41. > :14:45.advantage towards Ireland in a major way in the fact that Paddy knocked

:14:46. > :14:51.it true. It will also give him confidence. This next piece, it is

:14:52. > :14:55.time for a little nostalgia. Exactly 30 years ago, the British and Irish

:14:56. > :15:00.Lions toured New Zealand. The manager was the great Willie

:15:01. > :15:04.McBride. The team included a host of Irish players, including David

:15:05. > :15:09.Owen. He decided to reunite the whole squad for a night of

:15:10. > :15:21.celebration. And he invited us along to take a look back at some of the

:15:22. > :15:28.great memories. Great recovery! All the way!

:15:29. > :15:34.We all made a great effort to get there and they are having a ball. It

:15:35. > :15:39.is important. It is fantastic playing rugby but the friendships

:15:40. > :15:46.you make TV more important. -- or even more important. It could have

:15:47. > :15:51.been 30 days ago, it is like we never parted. There are some guys

:15:52. > :15:58.here I have not met for 30 years. But it has been handshakes, hogs,

:15:59. > :16:14.and the conversations have just continued on. -- hugs.

:16:15. > :16:19.Queen round him. -- clean. I played for the first test and it was the

:16:20. > :16:22.pinnacle of my rugby career, to represent the British and Irish

:16:23. > :16:28.Lions, it was fantastic. Going for the first try and getting

:16:29. > :16:33.it, beautifully done. The guys enjoyed it. A lot came back

:16:34. > :16:40.much better players and most would agree with that. But it is always

:16:41. > :16:48.tough to play well in New Zealand. Erwin... Never had a chance.

:16:49. > :16:55.A lot of people will remember the successful tours, but the 1983 tour

:16:56. > :17:00.was successful in many ways. They did not win the series but they are

:17:01. > :17:07.the same effort in as those who won in Australia in the summer.

:17:08. > :17:17.Paxton, the driving run. Chasing, what a tackle! But the try is given.

:17:18. > :17:22.Wonderful to see the guys, a privilege to be part of this fine

:17:23. > :17:25.body of men. Some of the boys, I have not seen for 30 years so it is

:17:26. > :17:33.fantastic and we are enjoying beers together.

:17:34. > :17:39.Great to see Campbell, one of my big sporting heroes. When you watch the

:17:40. > :17:44.old actions, does it surprise you how much rugby has changed? The

:17:45. > :17:55.physique of the players is the first thing. It has changed dramatically.

:17:56. > :17:59.I suppose it is a different era. Which is still admire what they

:18:00. > :18:04.achieved what they went through and they played phenomenal rugby. This

:18:05. > :18:09.is the start of the Joe Schmidt Iraq, what do Ireland need to do to

:18:10. > :18:16.close out this game? -- Joe Schmidt era. Performing the basics with pace

:18:17. > :18:19.and precision and getting possession in opposition territory. They have

:18:20. > :18:24.not gone through many phases with ball in hand. If they can get

:18:25. > :18:28.decision into kicking contest for the ball in the air and get

:18:29. > :18:31.possession in opposition territory to build phases and score tries,

:18:32. > :18:36.they are clearly dominant at the set piece, they need to use this

:18:37. > :18:42.platform to accelerate. What would you like to see more of? Controlling

:18:43. > :18:47.the pace of the game and building field position. You get a feeling if

:18:48. > :18:51.Ireland can get more schools on the board, Samoa will drop and the game

:18:52. > :18:57.could be one comfortable in. But the longer we spent in our own half and

:18:58. > :19:01.have to spend long amounts of time defending and depending on winning

:19:02. > :19:05.at the breakdown, it could be a long and difficult game. I do not ring we

:19:06. > :19:11.will lose but we could make it easier for ourselves with more

:19:12. > :19:17.control -- I do not think. And to cut out the lack of discipline?

:19:18. > :19:20.Without a primary possession, it is difficult to get possession in

:19:21. > :19:26.general. Ireland needs discipline at the break down and they need to

:19:27. > :19:30.exert their game plan proceedings. Thank you. Not a great game so far

:19:31. > :19:36.but a great atmosphere at the Beaver Stadium. Let's see what Ireland can

:19:37. > :19:40.produce in the second half. -- the Aviva Stadium.

:19:41. > :19:50.No changes from the players that left the field at half-time. But the

:19:51. > :19:58.Samoans are down to 14 men. Their centre. George Pisi is in the

:19:59. > :20:09.sin-bin. Paddy Jackson gets the second half under way. Taken in by

:20:10. > :20:25.26 macro, who plays his rugby in Japan. -- Faatiga Lemalu. Well

:20:26. > :20:30.covered by Ireland and Paddy Jackson. This man has made an

:20:31. > :20:34.impressive debut for Ireland, Jack McGrath.

:20:35. > :20:43.Well taken down and well read by Jack Lam to squeeze them towards the

:20:44. > :20:50.touchline. Rory Best at scrum-half. Shorn of Ryan will be a bit annoyed

:20:51. > :20:56.that he got brushed off in a tackle before -- Sean O'Brien. And Ireland

:20:57. > :21:00.were slowed to discover they had no scrum-half and the ball was pinched,

:21:01. > :21:13.this could be interesting. What a tackle by Tommy Bowe! The referee

:21:14. > :21:18.says to play on. What a tackle by Tommy Bowe! He took a gamble and he

:21:19. > :21:23.had to because Ireland were found wanting on the wing. Tommy Bowe

:21:24. > :21:29.decided to come in early and to wrap up that tackle. And he effectively

:21:30. > :21:37.forced Samoa to knock-on that ball, so good decision from Tommy Bowe to

:21:38. > :21:51.come in. A huge cheer. The Samoan right-wing was hit in the back by a

:21:52. > :21:59.paper line. -- plane. If you had done that at school, you would be a

:22:00. > :22:04.hero for ever and a day! First scrum of the second half and a free kick

:22:05. > :22:11.against the Samoans. They did not study the scrum. A lovely pass. A

:22:12. > :22:18.good sidestep by McFadden. He gets help from Jackson. This is better by

:22:19. > :22:25.Ireland. That was well done by the Munster skipper. Swallowed up by

:22:26. > :22:35.Samoa. A great opportunity and he needed somebody closer. Ireland

:22:36. > :22:42.managed to put in the choke tackle. Peter O'Mahony is quite a talent.

:22:43. > :22:47.That was a great run. He used McCarthy as his catapult. He used

:22:48. > :22:51.his own man to catapult forward. A brilliant run and the Irish had a

:22:52. > :22:57.job to catch up and offer the support needed. If we are looking at

:22:58. > :23:02.what has happened in the second half, the message seems to have come

:23:03. > :23:08.from Joe Schmidt that the tempo and the speed of the delivery needs to

:23:09. > :23:12.be increased, and in particular the back row offering themselves as

:23:13. > :23:17.runners. Coming on to the ball at pace to tie in the defenders quickly

:23:18. > :23:23.and released the backline, something we did not seek in the first half.

:23:24. > :23:31.Samoa still have a man in the sin-bin. Can Ireland capitalise?

:23:32. > :23:37.Somebody may have said something and they have been marched back ten

:23:38. > :23:42.metres. Advantage still going to Samoa. It could be a full penalty.

:23:43. > :23:46.He has marched them back another ten metres. I think somebody said

:23:47. > :23:50.something to Steve Walsh at half-time because we were looking at

:23:51. > :23:57.too many resets and we have already had to Pisi kicks. So I think a word

:23:58. > :24:09.was had in his ear. -- two free kick. -- kicks. It is a free kick

:24:10. > :24:15.and they have taken the option of the scrummage. Replacement prop

:24:16. > :24:23.James Johnston came on the early on for the Leicester Tiger player who

:24:24. > :24:30.went off with a nasty cough injury. -- calf. Ireland were able to put

:24:31. > :24:42.pressure on the scrummage in the first half. Better scrum by Samoa.

:24:43. > :24:45.Reduce the width of the park. -- a good use of the width of the park.

:24:46. > :25:17.Good Irish tackling. That is good work by Ireland and

:25:18. > :25:26.good work by McGrath again. And I think they have turned that over. A

:25:27. > :25:31.good switch of direction. A huge amount of space down that far side.

:25:32. > :25:37.That has bounced awkwardly, a chance for Ireland. Here comes McFadden!

:25:38. > :25:50.Jamie Heaslip in support. Taken by Brian! He is over! He has scored! --

:25:51. > :25:55.O'Brien. That is what the game needed and that is what Ireland is

:25:56. > :25:59.needed. That came from a brilliant kick by Paddy Jackson, a turnover

:26:00. > :26:05.ball originally, Samoa ran out of support players. They ran out of

:26:06. > :26:11.steam. A good turnover by Ireland. Rate work at the break. Rory Best

:26:12. > :26:16.gets in. -- great work. Quick thinking from Jackson. As he kicked

:26:17. > :26:22.it down, a piece of brilliance from Brian O'Driscoll, he flicked the

:26:23. > :26:27.ball between his legs. The Irish team kept it alive and kept it in

:26:28. > :26:31.field, a quick ball to the centre and Sean O'Brien came onto it with

:26:32. > :26:38.nobody in front and he was never going to be stopped. Great strength.

:26:39. > :26:45.You can tell by the mod on Paddy Jackson that he put his head where

:26:46. > :26:52.people would not put their feet. -- mud. And he rounds it off and

:26:53. > :26:58.Ireland are more comfortable. That was the kick, and only Brian

:26:59. > :27:04.O'Driscoll would think of doing that. Look at the determination of

:27:05. > :27:09.Sean O'Brien. It really was the quick thinking of Paddy Jackson.

:27:10. > :27:13.With a turnover ball, coaches often say, move it along the line. Jackson

:27:14. > :27:17.saw the space behind, they got fortunate with the bounds, but

:27:18. > :27:34.clever thinking. -- bounce. Samoa still down to 14 men and you

:27:35. > :27:39.need to be scoring at least six, ten points if the opposition are

:27:40. > :27:44.short-handed. That is not a good pass and it puts pressure on. Tiny

:27:45. > :27:56.-- Tommy Bowe. He has been outstanding, this player, for Samoa.

:27:57. > :28:10.He plays his club rugby in France. Second row, 26 macro. -- Faatiga

:28:11. > :28:19.Lemalu. That was good technique by McGrath. A good job of placing. And

:28:20. > :28:24.it is going to be an Irish scrum. It is amazing what a try does to lift

:28:25. > :28:31.the atmosphere. The supporters were waiting for something like that. The

:28:32. > :28:36.Samoans are now forcing everything. They feel they have to run from

:28:37. > :28:41.everywhere, there is little pattern, they are not going through phases.

:28:42. > :28:45.The green jerseys are able to line out and to wait. They can organise

:28:46. > :28:50.their defence and they can come forward. And because they are coming

:28:51. > :28:55.forward in numbers and in a straight line, it is forcing mistakes from

:28:56. > :29:02.Samoa. I think we will see more of that as Samoa start to tyre out and

:29:03. > :29:11.Ireland will get the ascendancy. -- to tyre.

:29:12. > :29:32.Murray again, it for by O'Mahony. Lovely hands by the Munster skipper.

:29:33. > :29:38.-- that was beautiful by O'Mahony. And he gives the penalty away. The

:29:39. > :29:44.referee is saying, number six. He has been consistent, Steve Walsh, he

:29:45. > :29:48.gave penalties earlier in the game for losing his footing at the

:29:49. > :29:57.crucial moment, and a penalty has been given to the Samoans.

:29:58. > :30:11.They have conceded ten points since George Pisi was in the sin-bin. The

:30:12. > :30:18.importance of having discipline. From a needless tackle when the pass

:30:19. > :30:30.had been made and wasn't going to affect the play.

:30:31. > :30:41.There are going to be a number of replacements made. The number 24 is

:30:42. > :30:52.coming on. I have no idea who number 24 is! It is a Tekori. He was played

:30:53. > :31:24.here three years ago. The Samoans penalised, their

:31:25. > :31:27.left-wing, Brando Vaalu. They've got to slow the Irish ball down. If

:31:28. > :31:34.Ireland get quick ball, they're going to be caught out. We've seen

:31:35. > :31:39.great movement in the Irish back. Probably could've done with McFadden

:31:40. > :31:43.coming inside to create that space and get away from the touchline but

:31:44. > :31:47.the Samoans are getting in at the break and they are trying to slow

:31:48. > :31:56.the ball down. They are giving more and more penalties away as the game

:31:57. > :32:00.progresses. No sign of any Irish replacements in the second half. Two

:32:01. > :32:07.pretty tough games coming up for Ireland. The Australians in a weeks

:32:08. > :32:15.time, and then New Zealand in a fortnight.

:32:16. > :32:21.Ireland haven't got the momentum for another try. Samoa are threatening

:32:22. > :33:07.to come in from an outside possession.

:33:08. > :33:18.Ireland are being patient. And giving away the penalty. And, again,

:33:19. > :33:23.just going in off their feet. Mike McCarthy was guilty of that. At the

:33:24. > :33:27.time when they need to have composure, keep the ball, they are

:33:28. > :33:30.in the ascendancy. Watching the backline, they are moving along,

:33:31. > :33:36.switching players, and although it looks good, they are not making much

:33:37. > :33:40.ground. There are defensive pair is waiting for them. I don't know.

:33:41. > :33:45.Maybe the players need to becoming a little bit deeper and trying to cut

:33:46. > :33:49.back the line. Somebody like apartment Mac coming from a blind

:33:50. > :33:54.position, cutting the angle back would serve better than switches in

:33:55. > :34:03.that outside channel. -- someone like Kearney.

:34:04. > :34:13.I'm glad that is O'Mahony and not me! That looks very sore. I wonder

:34:14. > :34:20.if he has broken his nose. Probably not for the first time. He has

:34:21. > :34:25.probably inflicted the same thing on one or two people. The clock has

:34:26. > :34:37.stopped with 13 minutes gone in the second half. Ireland were 40-6 up at

:34:38. > :34:45.the interval. -- 14-6. There is a raw in the throats of the Irish

:34:46. > :34:51.supporters. One of the modern greats of Irish rugby is about to come on

:34:52. > :34:58.after a break of 18 months. He has had an unfortunate couple of years,

:34:59. > :35:07.lots of injury for O'Connell. Here he comes, and what a warm welcome

:35:08. > :35:09.for Paul O'Connell. They are giving O'Mahony every opportunity to come

:35:10. > :35:17.in to the game when he can. McCarthy has played in the back row

:35:18. > :35:49.down the years. Much more lively stuff from the men

:35:50. > :35:52.in blue. 15 points adrift, that could all change. Great turnover by

:35:53. > :36:20.Ireland. There will be a lot of sore Irish

:36:21. > :36:47.bodies tonight. Some of these tackles are immense.

:36:48. > :36:56.The pass was judged to have gone forward to Rory Best, just when he

:36:57. > :37:01.had done brilliantly to juggle it. He gets in there, gets his hands on

:37:02. > :37:08.the ball, turns it over. Again, I think it was Paulo who came in for

:37:09. > :37:18.the Samoans. He just tried to play it out into the contact area. Again,

:37:19. > :37:24.it was good work from Devin Toner to get the ball back for Ireland. Now

:37:25. > :37:32.the Samoans have got the ball back from that forward pass, but it was a

:37:33. > :37:36.tough call. They have got all their backs here and also a back row

:37:37. > :37:46.forward, they have got Jack Lam lurking. If they go around that, I

:37:47. > :37:52.would be very surprised. Can they make this extra man work? No, they

:37:53. > :37:57.can't. That collision looked nasty. The referee has blown the whistle

:37:58. > :38:05.straight away. No foul play, head-on head collision. Lots of blood there

:38:06. > :38:12.already. It was accidental, but it was Vaalu who flew in. One of them

:38:13. > :38:20.was his own man. One of the Irish defenders as well. Oh, yes. It was

:38:21. > :38:29.Pisi, got smashed in the face by his own player. Vaalu got a nasty one to

:38:30. > :38:40.the side of the head. They got a thumping. It was accidental, they

:38:41. > :38:46.were both coming in at an angle. As Pisi gave the ball, he got a shunt

:38:47. > :38:51.from the Irish defender, and catapulted him into his own player.

:38:52. > :38:57.Not nice to see these stretch is coming on and to see all that blood.

:38:58. > :39:03.Absolutely not. It's been a tough game, as we'd expect. The Samoans

:39:04. > :39:11.have had a mixed physical, but this is unfortunate. They will be losing

:39:12. > :39:14.two players. It's not just a single impact, it is a double impact,

:39:15. > :39:22.because both of them are very slow to get to the ground. Pisi, their

:39:23. > :39:27.main playmaker, that would be a huge loss. They are going to bring on

:39:28. > :39:46.Jeremy Su'a, a scrum-half. The worrying thing is that Pisi

:39:47. > :39:59.seems to be out cold. Sporting a brand-new goatee beard, the

:40:00. > :40:10.formidable Cain Healy. The bounce to the ball was awkward. Slippery

:40:11. > :40:15.surface, the undoing of the Samoan. From that range, a brick wall was

:40:16. > :40:26.not going to stop Sean O'Brien. You see the speed. Heaslip got over it

:40:27. > :40:34.quickly, perfect ball from Murray, flicked it away, and Sean O'Brien

:40:35. > :40:45.brought it in. Well, we can see that Tusi Pisi is up on his feet again.

:40:46. > :40:49.Hello, everybody, back in Samoa. He certainly looks groggy. We are more

:40:50. > :40:56.concerned for his colleague who's going to require a stretcher to

:40:57. > :41:06.remove him from the field. So Jeremy Su'a will be coming on and Fautua

:41:07. > :41:11.Otto will be coming on. Su'a is with Worcester, Otto is with Bristol.

:41:12. > :41:15.There is a buzz all of the ground. When you have a one-man advantage,

:41:16. > :41:21.you need to press it home, and Ireland got the penalty just before

:41:22. > :41:25.half-time, and then Sean O'Brien got that try. Joe Schmidt will be

:41:26. > :41:29.looking for more from this side. I think there could be some changes

:41:30. > :41:35.made on the 60 minute mark. We will see him playing some other players

:41:36. > :41:39.from the bench. But it has been a bit of a stop start affair, not

:41:40. > :41:44.great continuity to the match, which is affecting the team, the Irish

:41:45. > :41:50.team, they can't get into their patterns. The scrums were messy in

:41:51. > :41:54.the first half we were looking at recess. There is no doubt that as

:41:55. > :41:59.you are trying to bring in new patterns, it's important there is a

:42:00. > :42:06.flow to the game, and that there is a continuity, and that there are

:42:07. > :42:09.off-loads. It is a perfect day for rugby, but it hasn't come into the

:42:10. > :42:13.type of game that the Irish would have wanted and it has affected

:42:14. > :42:18.them. Again, we are seeing stoppages and play. Every time they get

:42:19. > :42:24.momentum, it breaks down and stops again. A frustrating day for Joe

:42:25. > :42:29.Schmidt, and he is wondering how exactly you can get that level of

:42:30. > :42:34.continuity back. Ireland have got a number of players waiting to come

:42:35. > :42:38.on. Declan Fitzpatrick is down below us, and number 21 is Airedale Air

:42:39. > :43:05.Conditioning. A very generous round of applause

:43:06. > :43:27.for the Samoan players injured in that clash. It is a long way from

:43:28. > :43:32.the canvas stretcher carried on by two men. Player safety is everything

:43:33. > :43:38.these days, and they are so well looked after. But it is a very sad

:43:39. > :43:44.sight seeing a player go off. It's the last thing you want to see, the

:43:45. > :43:52.sight of that medical card. The skipper is going to have to

:43:53. > :44:08.readjust. Fotuali'i has gone to the outside half position.

:44:09. > :44:47.Su'a is the replacement hooker. Su'a, good work from him.

:44:48. > :44:57.Johnson into Mike Ross. Devin Toner hangs onto him. Nicely presented

:44:58. > :45:05.either Samoans but Ireland have slowed it down, aggressive I Jack

:45:06. > :45:10.Lam. Tackled by Jack McGrath. Good work by Jamie Heaslip. Kahn

:45:11. > :45:16.Fotuali'i. There was an overlap but they brought it into the middle of

:45:17. > :45:23.the park. Kahn Fotuali'i, that has come loose. A good tackle by Conor

:45:24. > :45:34.Murray. The referee has played on, no knock forward.

:45:35. > :45:42.Samoa are trying all sorts but nothing is coming together. This is

:45:43. > :45:51.the enormous Johnstone. And they get the penalty. Good piece of

:45:52. > :45:55.continuity by the Samoans. But a needless penalty by Ireland. It was

:45:56. > :45:59.a penalty, you could see the hand of Jamie Heaslip. He came in on the

:46:00. > :46:05.side of the tackle and it was in the long enough to delay the ball, there

:46:06. > :46:11.was no need. There was no threat, the defensive line is organised for

:46:12. > :46:13.Ireland. They would be happy to let the Samoans have the ball and stiff

:46:14. > :46:16.and defend the corner but now they are under Russia with a line-out for

:46:17. > :46:32.Samoa -- under pressure. Cian Healy I can see down below. You

:46:33. > :46:38.wonder if Peter Mahoney -- Peter O'Mahony has come off and will come

:46:39. > :46:43.back on again. Jack Lam tidies up with a good forward tried by

:46:44. > :46:55.Ireland. A good piece of different -- aggressive defending. Paolo, the

:46:56. > :47:00.tackle by Mike Ross. Isaia Tuifua. Ireland have stolen that, Rory Best

:47:01. > :47:18.in a game, he is the master of that. And D'arcy. A quicker ball, well

:47:19. > :47:24.away. McFadden. Disappointing. That was nearly away. Another great deal

:47:25. > :47:29.by Rory Best, that is three, possibly four he has been a part of

:47:30. > :47:35.and created the opportunity for Paddy Jackson. They got fortunate

:47:36. > :47:42.with a bounce before. For the try that Sean O'Brien got. The bench has

:47:43. > :47:50.unloaded and everybody is coming on. Mike Ross, Conor Murray is coming

:47:51. > :47:56.off. Tommy Bowe has gone off. Jack McGrath, who has had a splendid

:47:57. > :48:07.debut, has come off. McCarthy has come off the field. Peter O'Mahony

:48:08. > :48:13.is back on the field. Untidy by Ireland at the outset but well Paul

:48:14. > :48:28.Den by Declan Fitzpatrick. -- called in. -- pulled. That was given just

:48:29. > :48:32.about the right amount of weight. Waiting for advantage and non-will

:48:33. > :48:44.come for the Samoans. The men in blue will get a foot in the scrum.

:48:45. > :48:49.And who wearing green has come on? That is Eoin Reddan. That will be

:48:50. > :48:53.the difference between these sides, the quality Ireland have on the

:48:54. > :49:00.bench to bring on. They certainly have strength and depth on the bench

:49:01. > :49:05.and that will be the difference in the last 20 minutes. They will bring

:49:06. > :49:10.a freshness and real contribution to this team and up the tempo. And I

:49:11. > :49:18.think we might see some different style of play from the Irish. Chris

:49:19. > :49:27.Henry has a hamstring injury. I hope it is not a tear. We do not know how

:49:28. > :49:32.serious the Samoan scrum is. Has he overcooked that? Straight into

:49:33. > :49:38.touch, very unfortunate and disappointing for him and his side.

:49:39. > :49:49.Now you can really seep Paul O'Connor and Brian O'Driscoll came

:49:50. > :49:54.in. -- see. There was real purpose about getting something organised.

:49:55. > :50:00.They could try to move it out to the backline. Definitely some strong

:50:01. > :50:04.words throughout the team. A knock-on from Gordon D'Arcy,

:50:05. > :50:11.unfortunately. Referee is still playing advantage to the Samoans.

:50:12. > :50:17.Dave Carney, wearing 23, has come on for his first cap. This is opening

:50:18. > :50:24.up a bit and the more loose this is, the more it will suit the Samoans.

:50:25. > :50:32.Great strength by the dreadlocked replacement. An opening tackle by

:50:33. > :50:51.Isaia Tuifua. The referee had a hand-out for the penalty. Here come

:50:52. > :50:58.the Samoans. Jeremy C A sit on. -- Jeremy Su'a. The penalty has been

:50:59. > :51:05.given against Ireland. Great credit to the Samoans. That man has been so

:51:06. > :51:12.ambitious all day. He has tried things. A good break from him. You

:51:13. > :51:17.have to give the Samoans credit. They have come here to play, they

:51:18. > :51:21.are having a go. Ireland will be so disappointed. They got into a

:51:22. > :51:27.position to put pressure on the Samoans, they had a line-out, the

:51:28. > :51:35.back row rocked of the line-out. -- dropped off. The past to D'arcy was

:51:36. > :51:41.so low that he not get on and the whole thing broke down. -- he

:51:42. > :51:47.knocked it on. Those mistakes are too common from Ireland. Kahn

:51:48. > :51:54.Fotuali'i, in the absence of his partner, has stepped up to the kick

:51:55. > :52:05.for goal. Still about 16 minutes of this game

:52:06. > :52:10.remaining. The Samoans might be looking for a successful kick to

:52:11. > :52:19.provide a chip with the back foot. It is just about perfect! 21-9 in

:52:20. > :52:23.Ireland's favour. The Samoans have something to cheer about in the

:52:24. > :52:28.second half. And with a number of replacements, the Samoans have had

:52:29. > :52:34.to make a couple as well as they lost two men because of a nasty

:52:35. > :52:40.midfield collision. Paddy Jackson to get this game underway again. That

:52:41. > :52:45.was not forward. The ball has come loose. The referee is playing

:52:46. > :52:51.advantage to Ireland. And Ireland will get the scrum. A good kick by

:52:52. > :52:57.Jackson, he has played well today. Everything he has been asked to do,

:52:58. > :53:01.he has done perfectly. He has kicked well, except that one that hit the

:53:02. > :53:06.post. He can be happy with his performance so far. Ireland have to

:53:07. > :53:10.think about this. The set piece, they did not concentrate and they

:53:11. > :53:16.messed it up. The scrum has been dominant all day, perfect position,

:53:17. > :53:22.we must see some decent first phase attack ball from this. It is an

:53:23. > :53:26.Irish forward pack with five British and Irish Lions on the most recent

:53:27. > :53:34.tour in it so they should be pretty comfortable at this. That is a good

:53:35. > :53:41.scrum. Got the back nice and parallel. McFadden, a good angle.

:53:42. > :53:47.Inside to D'arcy, this is better. D'arcy is still going. Good support

:53:48. > :53:53.from Sean O'Brien. Ireland within touching distance of the line. Cian

:53:54. > :54:02.Healy. Good presentation, eight Whickham ball. -- a quicker ball.

:54:03. > :54:08.Carney! It is pretty close! What a moment for the Carney family! The

:54:09. > :54:13.53rd set of brothers to play for Ireland. And Dave might just have

:54:14. > :54:17.marked his debut with a try in the corner. There is no doubt

:54:18. > :54:23.whatsoever, he definitely got over and got the touchdown before anybody

:54:24. > :54:29.was anywhere near the touchline. We can see it again. No question

:54:30. > :54:36.whatsoever. A great try and a brilliant pass from his brother. You

:54:37. > :54:40.will have two wonder afterwards when they are having a chat if that was

:54:41. > :54:50.deliberate! -- you have to wonder. Williams skills. Winning your first

:54:51. > :54:54.cap is always extremely special. -- valiant skills. Scoring a try is the

:54:55. > :55:00.icing on the cake and Dave Carney gets his first Irish try on the

:55:01. > :55:04.occasion of his first Irish cap and he can hardly contain himself. He is

:55:05. > :55:10.delighted and like -- and rightly so. It was inevitable, it came from

:55:11. > :55:14.a solid set piece. Jamie Heaslip got the ball away, a great run by

:55:15. > :55:19.McFadden. Changed direction and a brilliant off-load to D'arcy who

:55:20. > :55:25.they could not tackle. He kept going. He was able to set it up and

:55:26. > :55:31.Paddy Jackson provided another great conversion. Great continuity from

:55:32. > :55:36.Ireland to set that try up. And McFadden is in the middle of it.

:55:37. > :55:42.D'arcy showed immense strength and great footwork and when the ball was

:55:43. > :55:52.released... The dancing was perfect and the finish was exquisite! And a

:55:53. > :56:04.first Irish try for Dave Carney in his first Irish appearance. We still

:56:05. > :56:11.have about 13 minutes remaining. The Samoans will not hold back, I am

:56:12. > :56:17.sure. Well taken by Devin Toner. Eoin Reddan. Rob Carney. That was

:56:18. > :56:51.well gathered by Kahn Fotuali'i. That was well set up by Samoa. Cian

:56:52. > :57:00.Healy with the tackle. Paulo divides the cover. He slipped up a big bump.

:57:01. > :57:10.But he has made it available and this is a good chance.

:57:11. > :57:19.Bounces off four defenders. The momentum is with Ireland. That was

:57:20. > :57:26.not offside. This is Dave Carney, is he going to get two on his debut? A

:57:27. > :57:31.breeze is starting to pick up and the crowd getting excited. Rory

:57:32. > :57:40.Best, who has had another wonderful day, on the ground. Cleverly done by

:57:41. > :57:48.O'Driscoll. Cleared by the Samoans. That will be an Irish line-out, and

:57:49. > :57:52.a very good position. Jamie Heaslip picking himself up slowly after that

:57:53. > :57:58.challenge. I did not think any arms were used in that tackle when they

:57:59. > :58:05.went in on that which Jamie Heaslip and he certainly seemed to get

:58:06. > :58:24.smashed in that tackle. -- with Jamie Heaslip.

:58:25. > :58:35.Another Samoan is down at this stage. Paul O'Connell was named at

:58:36. > :58:40.captain even though Jamie Heaslip is captain, what do you make of that?

:58:41. > :58:43.Paul O'Connell was coming back from injury so the right decision was to

:58:44. > :58:48.put him on the bench and let him find himself into the game. They

:58:49. > :58:53.need him to get gametime with Australia and New Zealand, got. I do

:58:54. > :59:01.not think there is major issues with that. -- and New Zealand coming up.

:59:02. > :59:15.Well taken at the back by Jamie Heaslip. Rory Best to his old friend

:59:16. > :59:22.Cian Healy. Beautifully done between the two Leinster man. Nice switch.

:59:23. > :59:25.The Samoans are offside and the referee is playing advantage to

:59:26. > :59:33.Ireland. They will looking for a fourth try. And the little brother

:59:34. > :59:37.will not thank him for that pass! Having thanked him a lot for the

:59:38. > :59:41.first, but they have to come back for a penalty. And Ireland may think

:59:42. > :59:50.about the scrum beside the post at the three points on offer. Dave

:59:51. > :59:58.Carney, a grin on the face. Not far away because of the pressure coming

:59:59. > :00:02.on Carney. Rob Carney, because of the pressure, he had to get the past

:00:03. > :00:04.away quickly and he went slightly forward as it made its way to his

:00:05. > :00:20.brother David. So, Rory Best has come off the

:00:21. > :00:31.field. Brian O'Driscoll has come off the field. That was his 155th cap.

:00:32. > :00:40.One more, he will be level with the Ronan O'Gara.

:00:41. > :00:55.So, Madigan comes on, Sean Cronin as well. They have taken Brian off to

:00:56. > :01:00.make sure... He hasn't had a lot of game time coming into this game, so

:01:01. > :01:06.asking him to play the whole game would have been too much. He needs

:01:07. > :01:09.to be ready for next week. I am sure he would have lasted another ten

:01:10. > :01:15.minutes. Ireland have gone for the option of the scrummage directly in

:01:16. > :01:25.front of the Samoan post. A solid looking scrum.

:01:26. > :01:42.Oh, it is going to be a trifle McFadden! Island's fourth of the

:01:43. > :01:47.afternoon. A great try. And McFadden gets over for a try. He deserves it.

:01:48. > :01:53.He has been very industrious tonight. I thought it was given to

:01:54. > :01:59.early, the pass, but it was brilliant. The defence had to check

:02:00. > :02:04.him, and because they had to check, he was able to off-load. The way he

:02:05. > :02:10.steps, that brings the winner in because they are worried about

:02:11. > :02:13.D'Arcy, which releases space for McFadden and he gets his just reward

:02:14. > :02:22.because he has been very industrious. D'Arcy has had a very

:02:23. > :02:26.great second half. He has committed it all in the second half. He has

:02:27. > :02:39.played a role in a number of the Irish tries. Oh, he has done it

:02:40. > :02:46.again. Well, 15 points the Paddy Jackson this afternoon, he has only

:02:47. > :02:58.missed one click. That was a fine finish by McFadden. Paddy Jackson

:02:59. > :03:02.has put Ireland in a good position today. He looks happy, he is happy

:03:03. > :03:07.with the players around him, and he has given a good quality

:03:08. > :03:16.performance. And he is only 21, don't you hate him?

:03:17. > :03:32.Interesting to see if the foot wasn't in touch. I wonder who would

:03:33. > :04:08.have been looking to try to get some support and off-load.

:04:09. > :04:20.That was an interesting kick, but it might work. Dave Kearney, thinking

:04:21. > :04:24.about the first try, doing some juggling fare. Six and a half

:04:25. > :04:32.minutes remaining, Samoa will be happy about the second half. --

:04:33. > :04:36.Samoa will not be happy. The game has certainly changed. We've got to

:04:37. > :04:39.give credit to Samoa. They were affected badly before this match

:04:40. > :04:44.with five of their front starting players unable to play which is a

:04:45. > :04:48.big disappointment for them. They had targeted this game as the one

:04:49. > :04:53.they wanted to put-in a big performance for, it being the only

:04:54. > :04:57.frontier team they are up against on this tour. They wanted to target

:04:58. > :05:07.them and have a go. Injuries prior to the match and during the game, it

:05:08. > :05:23.has affected their game badly. It was out of their control, really.

:05:24. > :05:40.Good work off the back by the Samoans. They couldn't get a

:05:41. > :05:42.regulation shirt to fit Joe Tekori, so they have had to get an enormous

:05:43. > :06:15.one. Can Ireland create something from

:06:16. > :06:41.this? He very nearly got to it! I think he

:06:42. > :06:47.torched it -- touched it. It is a Samoan line-up. He was so close.

:06:48. > :06:51.McFadden does this so well. He is not the biggest guy in the world,

:06:52. > :07:00.but he never gives up, always compute. He just got his fingertips

:07:01. > :07:05.to that. I think he has done very well today, McFadden, he has been

:07:06. > :07:09.very industrious, getting himself involved. Out in the win, you can

:07:10. > :07:16.wait all day and not see the ball, but he has gone searching for it.

:07:17. > :07:27.Ireland have some versatile players who can adapt to the winner.

:07:28. > :08:01.That was not the cleverest things that Kearney has ever done.

:08:02. > :08:06.Good defence by Ireland, Samoa looking for the late try just to

:08:07. > :08:08.take the bad luck of the thing. They haven't played badly at all. But

:08:09. > :08:43.injuries haven't helped them. Ireland's defence looking pretty

:08:44. > :08:45.solid. Now, they've turned it over. Here comes Madigan. He is still

:08:46. > :09:02.going! Reddan gets it, here is Kearney. The

:09:03. > :09:08.brothers give it to each other. Reddan checks. He's done it again. A

:09:09. > :09:15.second try for Kearney. Can you believe it? Two tries on a debut?

:09:16. > :09:22.They might be checking upstairs to make sure there was no forward

:09:23. > :09:27.passing. But it has been given. Great combinations there. I thought

:09:28. > :09:40.that Madigan may have released earlier. But great support played by

:09:41. > :09:48.pretty much all the backline. And Kearney was there at the crucial

:09:49. > :09:54.moment. Two tries! There was a danger they had overcooked the whole

:09:55. > :10:00.thing. It was looking as if it was easy to score, and then they were

:10:01. > :10:04.making a meal of it. But that was a great try. The referee was pretty

:10:05. > :10:11.happy, his touch judge was pretty happy. And I am sure that Dave

:10:12. > :10:18.Kearney is pretty ecstatic, too. It all came from a turnover ball in

:10:19. > :10:28.their own half. Paddy Jackson has managed to miss. Here it is again,

:10:29. > :10:36.great interplay. Nice little checks, plenty of support. And there is

:10:37. > :10:41.Kearney, and what a debut for him. Reddan did very well. The defence

:10:42. > :10:45.had come over to cover him. A lot of players would have been bundled into

:10:46. > :10:52.touch, but he took the step, handed off the player, had the composure to

:10:53. > :11:00.wait, and then gave the past. -- the past.

:11:01. > :11:11.Sean O'Brien showing plenty of Bothell, but it is going forward.

:11:12. > :11:14.The 80 minutes are up. I'd be surprised if you'd doesn't blow the

:11:15. > :11:21.whistle to signal the end of the game. He's not going to surprise me

:11:22. > :11:26.at all, it has been a great day for casual tea-mac, but an even better

:11:27. > :11:31.day for Dave Kearney. -- Jack McGrath.

:11:32. > :11:43.This has been a splendid debut for Dave Kearney, the man who scored the

:11:44. > :11:54.first try, O'Mahony, played in the first half. Tries from Sean

:11:55. > :11:59.O'Brien, two from Kearney. It wasn't perfect, there were mistakes.

:12:00. > :12:00.Overall, a good result, eight half game to get out of the way and a

:12:01. > :12:14.good start. -- a tough game. Well, a comfortable win for island

:12:15. > :12:22.in the end but no doubt the new coach Joe Schmidt to will have

:12:23. > :12:26.plenty to dissect. O'Mahony got island in the lead in the first half

:12:27. > :12:33.with a try, but then it got better from Brian O'Driscoll, Sean O'Brien

:12:34. > :12:45.with a touchdown, Dave Kearney with two tries, and McFadden also with a

:12:46. > :12:49.try. Eddie, give us your assessment of Joe Schmidt's first game in

:12:50. > :12:55.charge. They got the job done in the end. They took advantage of the

:12:56. > :13:01.start of the second half. Once they got control of the game, the Samoans

:13:02. > :13:05.struggled. Then they took full advantage. And you can't argue with

:13:06. > :13:09.the scoreline. The executed very well in the end. They took full

:13:10. > :13:15.advantage of the opportunities they got. You can't argue with the

:13:16. > :13:19.scoreline, but for the first 60 minutes, Ireland were put to Gilly

:13:20. > :13:24.do is appointing and frustrating to watch. That is interest --

:13:25. > :13:29.international rugby. You will be confronted physically with Samoa,

:13:30. > :13:33.they had complete dominance at the set piece, at the breakdown, and in

:13:34. > :13:38.the last 20 minutes, they got the fruits of their endeavours. Their

:13:39. > :13:44.kicking game improved, they had possession, and there were some

:13:45. > :13:48.clinical finishes. Some hard work done in that first 40-60 minutes but

:13:49. > :13:54.once they tweaked a few things in terms of their kicking, that

:13:55. > :13:58.dominance they had started to tell. That clinical finishing, one of the

:13:59. > :14:02.big positives in that second half. It was a change of tactics in the

:14:03. > :14:05.second half which paid off. We didn't kick the ball as much, and

:14:06. > :14:13.when we did, it was much more strategic. So, we didn't create the

:14:14. > :14:19.opportunities that Samoa did in the first half, and even, that said,

:14:20. > :14:23.Samoa did tried to run more possession, but Samoa couldn't hold

:14:24. > :14:26.on to the ball in the breakdown which led to all sorts of trouble.

:14:27. > :14:30.If you're going to run with the ball, you should hold onto it.

:14:31. > :14:36.Ireland really punished them. Some of the scores came from turnovers,

:14:37. > :14:40.from Ireland being destructive turning the ball over, and using it

:14:41. > :14:43.effectively and efficiently and accurately, to put the knife in.

:14:44. > :14:53.Let's take a look at some those tries. It was some great play from

:14:54. > :14:57.Sean O'Brien. It felt like we were waiting for Ireland to get an

:14:58. > :15:04.opportunity. This turnover, you can see that choke tackle, and then Rory

:15:05. > :15:08.Best gets the ball. Some clever decisions after that. The kicking,

:15:09. > :15:12.which we have said was a feature that needed improvement, they were

:15:13. > :15:16.finding space, it was a fortuitous bounce. And then it is good

:15:17. > :15:21.decisions from there and composure. Keeping the ball in hand, making the

:15:22. > :15:27.right decisions. And then, against the retreating defence, a very good

:15:28. > :15:31.line taken. It is very difficult then defensively to get your men in

:15:32. > :15:38.position and identify the strike runners, and it all comes from this

:15:39. > :15:46.turnover. That was superb from we best. Every breakdown. He must have

:15:47. > :15:50.picked it up four or five turnovers, putting your body on the line. He

:15:51. > :15:55.gets a pounding but he just gets on with it. That was a big factor in

:15:56. > :16:01.Ireland's dominance in the second half. The Fed of what they achieved

:16:02. > :16:09.in the first half and they fed off the Samoans. Let's hear from the man

:16:10. > :16:15.of the match. It's easy, this international rugby

:16:16. > :16:19.walk! We played well and the substitutes

:16:20. > :16:24.did well when they came on. From the start, you seemed on top. We worked

:16:25. > :16:30.hard during the week and we set out a plan we wanted and it came off

:16:31. > :16:35.quite well. What did Joe Schmidt say at half-time? It was tight. They are

:16:36. > :16:41.dynamic boys, we have to keep grinding them down. They are tough

:16:42. > :16:48.and we have two keep at the 60 minute -- have to keep at them for

:16:49. > :16:51.60 minutes. How did you find the atmosphere on the occasion?

:16:52. > :16:56.Brilliant, the atmosphere was savage! People in their seats, that

:16:57. > :17:01.is what you want. It is a great honour to represent Ireland,

:17:02. > :17:05.especially in front of a packed crowd. Massive week is coming up,

:17:06. > :17:12.have you given Joe something to think about? -- a massive week. All

:17:13. > :17:16.I can do is my best and it is up to him. I am happy to play any role.

:17:17. > :17:23.Congratulations. Jack McGrath, man of the match, on

:17:24. > :17:30.his debut. And the scrums were a big speech and Ireland had the upper

:17:31. > :17:36.hand. Samoa were not comfortable and they were in big trouble in the

:17:37. > :17:44.first half. You have got to see what they will give you and they are --

:17:45. > :17:49.and it was obvious early in the game Samoa were in trouble. But Ireland

:17:50. > :17:53.kept the scrum Square and this is a feature of watch Joe Schmidt likes,

:17:54. > :17:57.set piece defence and -- set piece possession when you have a lot of

:17:58. > :18:00.peace to attack. That is what we want to see and we saw it

:18:01. > :18:07.particularly in the second half with the possession. Is not a bad debut

:18:08. > :18:12.for Dave Carney! That is what you want for your windows, set up by

:18:13. > :18:24.clinical work in the inside work -- windows. -- wingers. Ireland moving

:18:25. > :18:27.forward. We see a defence of line that is retreating once again. And

:18:28. > :18:34.good decisions are made. Identifying the space, good work in the contact

:18:35. > :18:40.areas, and speed of recycling creates the overlap. Brother to

:18:41. > :18:46.brother, pretty nice. The origin of that came from the scrum, a set

:18:47. > :18:51.piece. And the incision of the first strike did the damage and Samoa

:18:52. > :18:55.could not recover from that. It is not just the finishing by Dave

:18:56. > :18:58.Carney, it is the turn of the first and the great build-up play to the

:18:59. > :19:06.try which Joe Schmidt will be happy about. Yes, this is probably Samoa's

:19:07. > :19:11.best rugby of the game. They held onto the ball for many phases but

:19:12. > :19:15.Ireland held their shape and Samoa could not hold onto the ball. That

:19:16. > :19:22.is a turnover. When Ireland get it, it is one pass and we are into the

:19:23. > :19:27.back straightaway. When that line break happens, it is hard to

:19:28. > :19:33.recover. New Zealand, they gauge their game on that, at the breakdown

:19:34. > :19:37.and able to move forward like this. You have to win that breakdown

:19:38. > :19:42.battle to win his opportunities. What New Zealand have been good at

:19:43. > :19:46.is performing the basics better than anyone else, they then create

:19:47. > :19:50.opportunities. But once they create opportunities, they have the skill

:19:51. > :19:53.set and decision-making to finish them off and get points on the

:19:54. > :19:59.board, that is what islands did in the last 20 minutes. Created

:20:00. > :20:07.opportunities and finished them off. Like McFadden, great execution. You

:20:08. > :20:13.could go left or right, a slight decoy run to the right, then he goes

:20:14. > :20:20.left. And Samoa scrabbling, it is three players on two. Samoa panicked

:20:21. > :20:26.a bit. It is an easy run in the end. In the build-up to the game, the

:20:27. > :20:32.coach came under criticism for his selection of D'arcy in the centre,

:20:33. > :20:35.but he had a good game today. He did very well, started at three on two

:20:36. > :20:41.and they drifted initially, but D'arcy was able to draw two

:20:42. > :20:44.defenders and that created space on the outside. He has the feet and the

:20:45. > :20:49.experience, a good off-load. When defensive players are under pressure

:20:50. > :20:54.in a retreat, they have to make quick decisions and often as we have

:20:55. > :20:58.seen get them wrong. But it is the pressure created by the continuity

:20:59. > :21:02.and speed of recycling that puts them in the defensive position. We

:21:03. > :21:10.can get more reaction from Jamie Heaslip.

:21:11. > :21:15.As expected, it was brutal, what is your assessment?

:21:16. > :21:20.As a squad, we took a small step in the right direction. We can take a

:21:21. > :21:31.what more steps but we laid good foundations. -- a what more steps.

:21:32. > :21:42.Two players got their caps. It is boyhood dreams come true. A proud

:21:43. > :21:46.moment to lead two boys out but we have a lot to work on. We are chest

:21:47. > :21:54.heavy in tackles and we have to work on that. The set piece was good. We

:21:55. > :21:57.launched a lot from the scrum and line-out and we have to try from one

:21:58. > :22:03.of the line-outs and the scrums, so that is a bonus. We will have a lot

:22:04. > :22:11.of work on Monday. The breakdown was a big focus, a couple of silly

:22:12. > :22:16.penalties. We were a bit sloppy around the tackle. Not being

:22:17. > :22:20.decisive in the tackle and not dominating that collision zone and

:22:21. > :22:24.falling on their side of the ball and not getting awake quickly

:22:25. > :22:34.enough. But annoyed the referee and he had enough. As well as trying.

:22:35. > :22:42.Macro we got good turnovers we gave easy outs to them. The ball focus,

:22:43. > :22:47.we turned it over six times in the first half. These are things to work

:22:48. > :22:53.on and we have to be better at by next week. Good luck.

:22:54. > :22:56.The turnover ball will be disappointing but the turnovers

:22:57. > :23:04.Ireland produced today was one of the reasons I got the win. -- they

:23:05. > :23:09.got. They know Samoa hold onto the ball and time after time, Samoa

:23:10. > :23:14.could not win the ball. That is Rory Best against stealing the ball. The

:23:15. > :23:21.situations are crucial. If you can move that ball, that is Ireland on

:23:22. > :23:26.the run again. It is that dominance that allows you to create tempo.

:23:27. > :23:32.Very damaging, those turnovers, to reorganise your defence. You are

:23:33. > :23:37.moving into a defensive alignment, very difficult. Rory Best again

:23:38. > :23:41.here. Ireland have used the choke tackle very well in the past but it

:23:42. > :23:45.is that aggression and control it did so well on today. Let's hear

:23:46. > :23:52.from the new man in charge, Joe Schmidt.

:23:53. > :23:58.One game, one win, what is the emotion after that? Relief. We were

:23:59. > :24:03.a bit untidy. The cohesion was not as good as it should have been, we

:24:04. > :24:07.made a lot more tackles than they did and I do not think you can

:24:08. > :24:11.afford to give sides as much ball as we gave today. The scrums started

:24:12. > :24:20.strongly, the first line-out drive. Draw. And we got a couple of good

:24:21. > :24:26.tries. -- the line-out drive was top drawer. But it was patchy. Two

:24:27. > :24:35.massive games coming up. We have some guys out there I do not know

:24:36. > :24:43.well and we have some with mileage, I would like to get Paul O'Connell

:24:44. > :24:47.out, Sean O'Brien, that was fortunate for Chris Henry. He was

:24:48. > :24:52.really excited about his opportunity today and he started really well and

:24:53. > :24:56.got a turnover in the first ruck and started well but I think it might be

:24:57. > :25:03.a hamstring injury. Hopefully it is not too bad, but it is great to get

:25:04. > :25:06.Dave Carney out to get a of tries. The first different from his

:25:07. > :25:15.brother. A nice night for that household! Are you happy with Paddy

:25:16. > :25:18.Jackson? He directed us around the field really well. I thought he

:25:19. > :25:22.kicked the goal really well. Not just Paddy Jackson, we were a bit

:25:23. > :25:30.wayward with some of the kicking game. And again, I do not think we

:25:31. > :25:35.can afford to do that next week. If you do that against New Zealand,

:25:36. > :25:38.they will run the ball back at you and we could be under pressure if

:25:39. > :25:44.the kicking game is not correct. What is your primary focus on Monday

:25:45. > :25:49.morning? We will look at how best we can attack them. We will look at how

:25:50. > :25:55.we attacked tonight and make sure there are things we tidy up. I felt

:25:56. > :26:02.we were a bit untidy, we lacked a bit of cohesion we would have liked.

:26:03. > :26:07.I suppose as an appetiser, the victory tastes all right but the

:26:08. > :26:17.appearance on the plate was not so good! We look forward to next week!

:26:18. > :26:22.A very very assessment. It is the starter with two big courses to come

:26:23. > :26:28.with Australia and New Zealand. -- a very fair assessment. It will be a

:26:29. > :26:31.big week, no question. He recognised we cannot kick that loosely to

:26:32. > :26:38.Australia or they will punish us and we cannot see dividends defensively

:26:39. > :26:42.because Australia hold onto the ball better. That dynamic could change

:26:43. > :26:46.the game a lot. Australia will hold onto the ball more carefully and

:26:47. > :26:50.they will be more precise in their attacks. What do they need to

:26:51. > :26:56.improve on to beat Australia next week? Their structure in the first

:26:57. > :27:01.40 minutes in terms of what they did with the ball. And the execution,

:27:02. > :27:05.maybe the tactics were to kick the ball out of the first half, the

:27:06. > :27:09.execution was not right across the pitch. Easy to make this adjustment

:27:10. > :27:13.on a Monday morning on the back of a win without the pressure from the

:27:14. > :27:18.media about a poor performance. It was a fair assessment. The threat

:27:19. > :27:23.from Australia will be from the back three but set piece game will be the

:27:24. > :27:27.key focus for Ireland. It is not a strength of Australia and if they

:27:28. > :27:30.can get dominance in that aspect allied with a good performance at

:27:31. > :27:36.the breakdown, they will be in a position to win that game. Did you

:27:37. > :27:41.see enough today to be positive about the future for Ireland under

:27:42. > :27:45.Joe Schmidt? I think so and his assessment was honest upfront. We

:27:46. > :27:49.will be looking more for precision from that set piece and we will see

:27:50. > :27:54.more of Ireland holding onto that ball from more faces rather than

:27:55. > :27:58.kicking away. Thank you very much. Let's look at some of the other

:27:59. > :28:10.results today. Australia eat Italy by 50 points against 20.

:28:11. > :28:19.-- beat. Front against New Zealand kicks off in a couple of minutes. We

:28:20. > :28:25.have a lot more rugby over the next couple of rugby. Next Saturday, it

:28:26. > :28:28.is the second Autumn International, Ireland against Australia. And the

:28:29. > :28:37.following week, we have a double helping of live rugby. Join me at

:28:38. > :28:44.Ravenhill as Ulster continue with their campaign. And then Ireland

:28:45. > :28:48.against New Zealand. Improvement will be needed if Ireland to beat

:28:49. > :28:52.New Zealand for the first time, but the new coach got off to a winning

:28:53. > :28:54.start today. It is goodbye from everybody here.
