:00:00. > :00:11.Hello and welcome to the BBC sports centre. Over the next 15 minutes we
:00:12. > :00:18.will have all the latest news, previews and interviews ahead of a
:00:19. > :00:29.busy weekend. This is Saturday Sportsday.
:00:30. > :00:36.Hello. Here's what's coming up: On the Eve of England and Wales at
:00:37. > :00:40.Twickenham in the Six Nations we look back on the same classic
:00:41. > :00:45.fixture 40 years ago and meet the Irish referee who made a decision so
:00:46. > :00:50.controversial it was immortalised in song. Sport and culture on
:00:51. > :00:53.International Women's Day, we will be finding out why girls from some
:00:54. > :00:57.of the world's poorest countries are visiting the UK. And you know the
:00:58. > :01:02.phrase you are never too old? When it comes to athletics, it's true. We
:01:03. > :01:06.visit the pensioners in track and field. All that to come. First,
:01:07. > :01:12.let's look at some of today's headlines.
:01:13. > :01:23.She was on the show last week and now she's won Great Britain's first
:01:24. > :01:26.medal of the Winter Paralympics. Jade Etherington finishes second in
:01:27. > :01:33.the downhill this morning. We will have more in a few minutes.
:01:34. > :01:40.Northern Irishmen Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell and Wales Jamie
:01:41. > :01:48.Donaldson are one shot off the lead in the Golf Championship in Miami.
:01:49. > :01:51.And as game set and match for the new doubles partnership as the two
:01:52. > :01:57.Wimbledon champions claim their first win in round one of the Indian
:01:58. > :02:00.Wells Open. Lots going on today. Let's start with the Winter
:02:01. > :02:04.Paralympics and that first medal of the games for Britain's Jade
:02:05. > :02:10.Etherington with the aid of her guide Caroline Powell. She has taken
:02:11. > :02:13.silver in the visually impaired downhill skiing.
:02:14. > :02:17.An incredible achievement by Jade Etherington and her guide Caroline
:02:18. > :02:21.Powell. Silver on the opening day. You couldn't ask for much better.
:02:22. > :02:25.Let's put that into some perspective. She's from
:02:26. > :02:31.Lincolnshire, which isn't exactly renowned for its snowy mountains and
:02:32. > :02:35.she also has glaucoma, she effectively has only 5% vision,
:02:36. > :02:40.travelling at speeds of over a hin kilometres an hour -- over 100
:02:41. > :02:45.kilometres an hour must make for a scary experience. Together with her
:02:46. > :02:50.guide they were fantastic together. They came down in second position,
:02:51. > :02:54.got that silver medal and understandably were delighted when I
:02:55. > :02:59.spoke to them later. It hasn't really sunk in yet. Hopefully today
:03:00. > :03:04.when we get the medal it will be when... Yeah, I am really excited
:03:05. > :03:07.and I am an official proud Paralympian now, it's a great
:03:08. > :03:12.feeling and it's good to get the flowers and get into that and I am
:03:13. > :03:17.proud of me and Caroline working together today and our performance
:03:18. > :03:20.and hopefully we can continue. Understandably delighted after that
:03:21. > :03:23.historic achievement. Kelly Gallagher was also in action in the
:03:24. > :03:27.same event but finished 6th. On the bright side she does have her
:03:28. > :03:34.stronger events to come later in the week. Let's talk about curling. In
:03:35. > :03:37.2006 the wheelchair curlers won silver in Italy. They're going for a
:03:38. > :03:42.medal here in Sochi. It hasn't got off to the best start. They lost 6-3
:03:43. > :03:48.to Canada. It's worth pointing out Canada are the two-time Paralympic
:03:49. > :03:53.champions and a medal favourite here at these Games in Russia. An
:03:54. > :03:56.incredible achievement for Jade Etherington and her guide, they'll
:03:57. > :04:01.hope they can carry that momentum to their next event, they have four
:04:02. > :04:12.more to come and it could be the cat alist for further -- catalyst for
:04:13. > :04:16.further success for Great Britain. Nick Hope there in Sochi and you can
:04:17. > :04:19.keep up-to-date on all the latest from the Winter Paralympics by
:04:20. > :04:22.checking out the BBC Sport website. Now when it comes to sporting
:04:23. > :04:26.rivalries they don't get much bigger than England against Wales in rugby
:04:27. > :04:30.union. This Sunday the two will go head to head again - in the last but
:04:31. > :04:33.one round of the Six Nations Championship. It's always a huge
:04:34. > :04:36.game with plenty of needle, but 40 years ago a certain Irish referee
:04:37. > :04:40.made a decision in the fixture against Wales - so controversial it
:04:41. > :04:42.was made into a song. Patrick Geary went to meet him.
:04:43. > :04:45.It's Twickenham in 1974, the great Welsh team of the era are looking
:04:46. > :04:47.for a win that would give them the Five Nations championship and John
:04:48. > :04:51.West, a young referee from Ireland is making his debut. To be appointed
:04:52. > :04:54.to a match like this is absolutely brilliant. Obviously I would be
:04:55. > :05:01.heightly nervous and pumped with adrenalin. -- highly nervous. The
:05:02. > :05:09.game is in the balance when Williams sees an opportunity.
:05:10. > :05:19.The referee has awarded a 25. The whole of Wales is up in arms. Wales
:05:20. > :05:25.lost and an entertainer named Max Boys immortalised West's performance
:05:26. > :05:31.The sunshine... A blind Irish referee. All these years on and with
:05:32. > :05:36.perfect eyesight West has no regrets. I don't spend a time
:05:37. > :05:39.turning at night saying, oh, I should have done this and that. You
:05:40. > :05:43.make a call, you back your judgment to make a call. How rugby's changed.
:05:44. > :05:49.Now John would be able to refer to any number of angles to check
:05:50. > :05:56.important decisions. He now uses video to spot stamping and other
:05:57. > :06:00.dangerous play as a commissioner. The players are aware they're under
:06:01. > :06:05.surveillance. It's probably cleaner than when we were doing it when
:06:06. > :06:10.almost - they all had a psychopath lurking around in the background.
:06:11. > :06:13.Now they tend to be identified a little quicker! As well as bad
:06:14. > :06:17.behaviour referees can check a number of decisions during the game
:06:18. > :06:26.using video technology. Can it be used too often? I was at a game
:06:27. > :06:29.recently and I think there was 57 minutes for the first half which was
:06:30. > :06:34.ridiculous. They were asking all sorts. The guy could just make up
:06:35. > :06:37.your mind, you know. There wasn't as if they were critical decisions or
:06:38. > :06:46.anything. This weekend John is back at Twickenham Twickenham. What does
:06:47. > :06:57.he think when he hears that song? # A blind Irish referee... I must get
:06:58. > :07:01.the royalties! Ireland play Italy in today's action and then Scotland
:07:02. > :07:05.take on France, both are live on the BBC. That match we have been talking
:07:06. > :07:12.about at Twickenham gets under way tomorrow at 3.00pm.
:07:13. > :07:15.Something tells me the score there will be a bit closer than the
:07:16. > :07:19.women's Six Nations result yesterday - where England beat Wales 35-3. And
:07:20. > :07:22.we're sticking with the women and rugby theme because today is
:07:23. > :07:25.International Women's Day and to mark it a unique project is going on
:07:26. > :07:28.involving nearly 100 girls from India, Africa, South America and the
:07:29. > :07:32.Carribbean - all from deprived areas - all coming together to play rugby.
:07:33. > :07:36.Our Correspondent Joe Wilson was there when they met up in London.
:07:37. > :07:39.There are millions of children in the world with next to nothing, a
:07:40. > :07:42.few have a rugby ball in their hands. From eight of the most
:07:43. > :07:46.disadvantaged communities around the world teams of young rugby players
:07:47. > :07:52.have descended upon London and they are all girls. They're here to
:07:53. > :07:58.express themselves through sport, through dance, to find Common Ground
:07:59. > :08:02.and find confidence. Already there is a change, confidence, which they
:08:03. > :08:06.didn't have at home. They can freely speak. They can freely talk to
:08:07. > :08:11.anyone which they didn't have. I think something good coming out. All
:08:12. > :08:13.the girls are being hosted by schools in and around London and
:08:14. > :08:18.staying with local families. The idea is that they exchange ideas,
:08:19. > :08:23.exchange culture and then next week they'll play a rugby tournament. Who
:08:24. > :08:29.is the best player in the team? I am. I am also the Captain of the
:08:30. > :08:33.team. Most Mostly we try our best to try to win. We will win on the day.
:08:34. > :08:37.The charity running the project is called Tour Aid and the value of
:08:38. > :08:43.coming on tour will be felt when the girls get home, that's the idea.
:08:44. > :08:47.They should go away as ambassadors for their generation because they
:08:48. > :08:52.are representing their generation. What I will say is that it is OK
:08:53. > :08:58.when they get back they will feel different because the change must
:08:59. > :09:04.come from within. Young players today, global role models for the
:09:05. > :09:10.future? Those are big aspirations and young girls having fun. Good for
:09:11. > :09:12.them. We're halfway through the World
:09:13. > :09:16.Indoor Athletics Championships - which is going on in Sopot in Poland
:09:17. > :09:20.this weekend and it's been a pretty good day for Britain so far. The
:09:21. > :09:22.BBC's Phil Jones and Colin Jackson have been watching this morning's
:09:23. > :09:24.action. Fascinating morning on day two of
:09:25. > :09:32.the World Indoor At yet licks Championships here -- Athletics
:09:33. > :09:39.Championships. Colin can talk about this It's
:09:40. > :09:44.important to get the outdoor champions that people know,
:09:45. > :09:52.recognisable faces to come indoors and Shelley san a big personality.
:09:53. > :09:56.It's the only sprint title she hasn't won. It will be a serious
:09:57. > :10:04.challenge. She had her game face on through the interview area, you know
:10:05. > :10:08.she means business. Veronica Campbell Brown coming badge from a
:10:09. > :10:12.drugs suspension -- coming back from a drugs suspension. A long way off
:10:13. > :10:15.her personal best. For all of us wondering why she choose this to
:10:16. > :10:22.return, but she is the defending champion, so she is having a go. It
:10:23. > :10:26.was a good morning for Britain, it gave us as boost over
:10:27. > :10:29.disappointments yesterday especially in the hurdles, your event. It was a
:10:30. > :10:34.successful day for us, both our athletes in the hurdles, Andy and
:10:35. > :10:37.Will ran personal bests and you can't ask for much more. That sets
:10:38. > :10:40.them up nicely for tomorrow's semifinal. Thank you very much
:10:41. > :10:45.indeed. There was good news from a British point of view for the relay
:10:46. > :10:49.teams, the men's and women's teams are through to tomorrow's final. We
:10:50. > :10:54.have had an enjoyable morning Colin and I and hopefully you can join us
:10:55. > :10:59.again for BBC2 coverage that starts at 5. 10pm.
:11:00. > :11:02.What happens when those athletes Phil was talking about retire from
:11:03. > :11:06.the top level? Well, just like in tennis and golf, there's another
:11:07. > :11:09.world of competition for them once they get to a certain age. It's
:11:10. > :11:12.called Masters Athletics but it's not just for the ex-pros. Alex Webb
:11:13. > :11:27.went to meet some track veterans ahead of this weekend's British
:11:28. > :11:32.Masters Indoor Championships. Inspire a generation, that was the
:11:33. > :11:36.slogan of London 2012. Perhaps we shouldn't just be looking at schools
:11:37. > :11:40.or youth clubs to uncover our nation's talent. They're younger
:11:41. > :11:49.than me! There are other generations breaking records and winning medals.
:11:50. > :11:53.Angela is a relative newcomer to the world of athletics. I wanted to
:11:54. > :11:57.raise money for heart research. I run the marathon on my 60th
:11:58. > :12:00.birthday. You are never too old to do anything. You can start slowly
:12:01. > :12:03.but I have to say I did feel embarrassed going out running when I
:12:04. > :12:07.first started training for the marathon. I used to go out in the
:12:08. > :12:11.dark. We need to be more switched on. Around half of us fail to do the
:12:12. > :12:15.recommended weekly amount of exercise. Inactivity is having a
:12:16. > :12:20.negative effect on our economy. We tend to do less and less physical
:12:21. > :12:24.activity as we get older. With an ageing population events like this
:12:25. > :12:30.could be the answer. Angela has gone on to become the best marathon
:12:31. > :12:34.runner in the world in her age cat combree -- category and only came to
:12:35. > :12:38.the sport seven years ago. Some athletes here competed in their
:12:39. > :12:44.youth. I have raced a lot of names going over the years, Colin Jackson,
:12:45. > :12:49.Tony Jarrett. All the top hurdlers. Later this month some of these
:12:50. > :12:55.athletes will be travelling to Budapest to the championships. They
:12:56. > :13:02.might find themselves up against a former Olympian. It took me six
:13:03. > :13:06.years or so before I really became any good. Don't expect quick-fixes
:13:07. > :13:14.but if you keep at it and you have to work and train hard, you have to
:13:15. > :13:20.train night nightly, train just like athletes. Whether it's track and
:13:21. > :13:24.field, cross-country or marathon running there is a world of
:13:25. > :13:29.athletics to get involved in. It's never too late to reach the very
:13:30. > :13:34.top. Time to tell you about this
:13:35. > :13:41.lunchtime's football. Arsenal are beating Everton 1-0. Raith Rovers
:13:42. > :13:44.are drawing with St Johnston. It's 0-0 with West Brom and Manchester
:13:45. > :13:50.United. There is full coverage on the BBC Sport website. I am back on
:13:51. > :13:56.Sportsday at 6. 30pm on BBC News. Bye.
