:00:00. > :00:13.Hello. Welcome to the BBC Sport Centre. I'm Karthi Gnanasegaram.

:00:14. > :00:16.Over the next 15 minutes we'll look ahead to the weekend's sports action

:00:17. > :00:29.with the latest news and interviews. This is Saturday Sporstday.

:00:30. > :00:34.Coming up on the programme: Six birdies for Bubba gives the American

:00:35. > :00:40.the lead at the halfway stage of the Masters. Exhilarating, dangerous and

:00:41. > :00:44.back in the UK. One of London2012's most popular sports returns. We'll

:00:45. > :00:48.preview the BMX World Cup with World Champion Liam Phillips. And the

:00:49. > :00:51.emotional story of the teenager who's left the traumas of Helmand

:00:52. > :00:52.for a new life in leafy Buckinghamshire where he's training

:00:53. > :00:56.for tomorrow's London Marathon. But before all of that let's take a

:00:57. > :01:09.look at today's sports headlines. Rotherham United's failure to beat

:01:10. > :01:12.Bradford last night in League One means Wolverhampton Wanderers will

:01:13. > :01:17.be promoted to the Championship if they win at Crewe today. Burnley

:01:18. > :01:19.could secure promotion to the Premier League later too.

:01:20. > :01:22.Superleague leaders St Helens maintained their 100% record this

:01:23. > :01:25.season, winning their eighth game in a row coming back with three late

:01:26. > :01:29.tries to beat second-placed Castleford 30-28.

:01:30. > :01:34.And Great Britain added two more gold medals to their tally at the

:01:35. > :01:37.Paracycling Track World Championships in Mexico winning both

:01:38. > :01:41.the men's and women's kilo time-trials. More on that in a

:01:42. > :01:48.moment. But let's start with golf's first Major of the year, the

:01:49. > :01:52.Masters. The 2012 Champion, Bubba Watson, has a three-shot lead at the

:01:53. > :01:55.halfway stage of the tournament. It wasn't a great day for Rory McIlroy

:01:56. > :01:59.though, who only just made the cut. Hazel Irvine is at the immaculate

:02:00. > :02:05.Augusta National course for us with the details.

:02:06. > :02:07.Yes, one of the great must see events in any sporting year, and

:02:08. > :02:12.this was the look of the leaderboard heading into the weekend. And it was

:02:13. > :02:15.Bubba Watson, trying to become only the 17th man in history to win the

:02:16. > :02:23.green jacket twice after his victory in 2012. A three shot lead above

:02:24. > :02:26.John Senden of Australia then came the Scandinavian challenge, Thomas

:02:27. > :02:30.Bjorn and Jonas Blixt, and then the defending champion, Adam Scott.

:02:31. > :02:39.Jordan Spieth giving a great account of himself in his first Masters.

:02:40. > :02:46.Henrik Stenson is one over par. But so many in the mix here. Former PGA

:02:47. > :02:53.champion, Mr Paul Azinger is with us. You speak from experience. What

:02:54. > :02:56.is the difficulty of being a Major champion, having to try to replicate

:02:57. > :03:01.the success, as Bubba Watson is trying to do? It can be tough and

:03:02. > :03:04.challenging. There's a lot of demands on your time and sometimes

:03:05. > :03:09.it is hard to say no, but you have to capitalise on the fact that you

:03:10. > :03:13.are a Major champion. If you lose a little focus on your game and start

:03:14. > :03:17.to focus on capitalising, monetarily, on what you have

:03:18. > :03:23.accomplished, but Bubba Watson seems to have turned it around. A couple

:03:24. > :03:25.of second places and a victory, and now a three shot lead. How'd you

:03:26. > :03:30.like the look of the leaderboard going into the weekend? It's pretty

:03:31. > :03:37.good seeing as there's no Tiger Woods. You have the future of golf

:03:38. > :03:41.with Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth. The story is beginning to unfold. John

:03:42. > :03:46.Senden in that last group with Bubba Watson, they are polar opposites.

:03:47. > :03:51.John Senden is very steady, not a great part. Bubba Watson can

:03:52. > :03:54.overpower a golf course. An unpolished player, never had a

:03:55. > :03:57.lesson in his life, he's leading the Masters and has a chance to win it

:03:58. > :04:02.for the second time. It's remarkable. What should we expect on

:04:03. > :04:07.the third day? What changes out on the course? I think Saturday is more

:04:08. > :04:10.difficult. It seems like the locations are more challenging. The

:04:11. > :04:16.first two days, they were pretty tough. On Sunday, they saved the

:04:17. > :04:23.whole locations and create all type of excitement. I just can't wait for

:04:24. > :04:27.it to unfold. Yes, and it will unfold shortly, because we will be

:04:28. > :04:33.on the air with highlights from the second round on BBC One. Then live

:04:34. > :04:38.coverage of the third round, on BBC Two tonight, from 7:30pm. Tomorrow,

:04:39. > :04:45.the all-important closing round. So, this weekend, staying in is the new

:04:46. > :04:49.going out. Catch you later. I will definitely be watching. Let's move

:04:50. > :04:51.from Georgia to Glasgow for the latest from the British Swimming

:04:52. > :04:54.Championships. It's the final opportunity to qualify for this

:04:55. > :04:57.summer's Commonwealth Games where it's hoped the sport can restore a

:04:58. > :04:59.little pride after disappointing Olympics and World Championship

:05:00. > :05:04.performances recently. Nick Hope reports.

:05:05. > :05:09.Welcome to Glasgow where this week the fans and the athletes alike have

:05:10. > :05:17.been getting a little taster of what to expect. Scotland's Olympic silver

:05:18. > :05:23.medallist won here in the 200 metres. Mike Jamieson won't it all

:05:24. > :05:27.his way over 100 metres because Ross Murdoch went quicker than him ahead

:05:28. > :05:32.of the final. Fran Halsall is one of the strongest Commonwealth prospects

:05:33. > :05:36.and she will go for gold in her 50 metres freestyle race later. Look

:05:37. > :05:41.out for the former medallist George Davies of Wales in the hundred

:05:42. > :05:45.metres backstroke final. -- Georgia Davies. There is live coverage from

:05:46. > :05:49.6pm. 5live Sports Extra will also bring

:05:50. > :05:56.you commentaries of this season's Women's Super League which starts on

:05:57. > :06:00.Wednesday. There have been some changes to the set-up of the WSL

:06:01. > :06:03.this year. Emily Croydon has more. The big new talking point has been

:06:04. > :06:07.the introduction of Manchester City into the top flight. Like their male

:06:08. > :06:11.counterparts, they have been investing heavily in the top talent.

:06:12. > :06:16.They have signed for England internationals, including the new

:06:17. > :06:19.England captain, Steph Horton. Manchester City want to do

:06:20. > :06:27.everything properly, but we have to be realistic. It's our first season

:06:28. > :06:31.together -- Steph Cowton. It is a new season, new staff, but we have

:06:32. > :06:34.to take it as it comes and see how we go and progress, but the last two

:06:35. > :06:39.months we have trained really well and prepared for season well. City

:06:40. > :06:43.are not the only new team in the top division. Lincoln Ladies have moved

:06:44. > :06:49.to Nottingham and will play as Notts County. But it is the introduction

:06:50. > :06:53.of the second level that is the big change, which brings promotion and

:06:54. > :06:58.relegation the first time since the creation of the league in 2011. It

:06:59. > :07:00.all gets underway next week, and City's trip to play Liverpool is the

:07:01. > :07:06.highlight. Great Britain claimed two golds and

:07:07. > :07:09.a bronze at the Paracycling Track World Championships overnight. That

:07:10. > :07:13.takes the team's haul at the midpoint of the competition to four

:07:14. > :07:18.medals. With more details is our reporter in Mexico, David McDaid.

:07:19. > :07:29.What a day it was here, two gold medals for Team GB and two world

:07:30. > :07:32.records as well. First we saw Sophie Thornhill take nearly three seconds

:07:33. > :07:38.off the previous record in the time trial in their first-ever event. To

:07:39. > :07:43.think this is our first event at Maine Championships, win it, it's

:07:44. > :07:49.still not really sunk in. Can't believe it at the moment. Neil

:07:50. > :07:56.Fachie and Pete Mitchell got the first ever sub minute tandem time.

:07:57. > :07:59.It's been very hard to break it, but it's very special, and we can

:08:00. > :08:04.treasure it for ever. Jon-Allan Butterworth also took a medal in the

:08:05. > :08:09.pursuit, and we could have more British medals to celebrate later

:08:10. > :08:10.today, because Butterworth, Jody Cundy and Sarah Storey are all going

:08:11. > :08:15.in their strongest events. Those Paracycling World

:08:16. > :08:19.Championships are a good indicator of form with two years to go until

:08:20. > :08:22.the Rio Games. And on Friday, it's the first round of the BMX

:08:23. > :08:25.SuperCross World Cup which starts in Manchester and doubles up as a 2016

:08:26. > :08:29.Olympic qualifying event. Liam Phillips finished eighth at the

:08:30. > :08:30.London Games, but went on to become World Champion in 2013. He's been

:08:31. > :08:41.speaking to Tim Hague. One of the highlights of the London

:08:42. > :08:47.Olympics is coming back to Britain. The sport of BMX visits Manchester

:08:48. > :08:54.for the World Cup. And the best male rider in the world will be there.

:08:55. > :09:02.The champion of the world is Liam Phillips of Great Britain! Last year

:09:03. > :09:05.was a remarkable season. It's the best season I've had for the

:09:06. > :09:09.duration of my career, and I'm hopeful I can continue that, moving

:09:10. > :09:12.forward. Obviously with the first World Cup being here, in my

:09:13. > :09:16.backyard, that's a good place to start a season. It's only when you

:09:17. > :09:20.are up here that you realise how intimidating the start of a BMX

:09:21. > :09:24.races. Eight metres above the ground and plenty of jumps to keep you

:09:25. > :09:35.occupied as well. It looks great fun, but it's not without danger.

:09:36. > :09:38.And the only man to win a gold in Olympic BMX says he gets scared, so

:09:39. > :09:42.you know it is frightening. When you are there in the final, all nervous,

:09:43. > :09:50.you ask yourself, why am I doing this? Why do I need this? But when

:09:51. > :09:54.the gate drops, you don't even think about it. You just forget about

:09:55. > :09:58.everything. If somebody says they don't get nervous, they are lying.

:09:59. > :10:04.We all do. It's just part of the sport, part of any sport. So, nerves

:10:05. > :10:07.of steel are required, even for a double Olympic champion, but that

:10:08. > :10:12.fear factor has not stopped many a youngster hopping onto a BMX. It's

:10:13. > :10:18.one of the fastest growing sports in the UK, and Liam Phillips thinks he

:10:19. > :10:23.knows why. I believe that there is not a better entry-level cycling

:10:24. > :10:26.sport than BMX. It gives you everything you need. The kid gets to

:10:27. > :10:31.12 or 13 and decides he wants to race on the track, or on the road,

:10:32. > :10:32.or do any form of cycling, the grounding that BMX gives that kid is

:10:33. > :10:39.second to none. In terms of numbers getting involved

:10:40. > :10:42.on a weekly basis cycling is in Sport England's top three sports.

:10:43. > :10:50.But when it comes to participation and inspiration, you can't get much

:10:51. > :10:54.bigger than the London Marathon. Around 30,000 runners take to the

:10:55. > :10:57.streets of the capital but the story of a teenager from Afghanistan's

:10:58. > :11:05.decision to do so is a particularly emotional one. The story starts in

:11:06. > :11:13.Helmand. It was the 20th of August, 2009, presidential election day. My

:11:14. > :11:18.brother and I were riding in town, trying to go and see the election

:11:19. > :11:26.process, and suddenly we got hit by a Taliban rocket, and I got hit in

:11:27. > :11:32.the eye with shrapnel. I was unconscious, but I survived. My

:11:33. > :11:36.brother didn't. He had a bigger piece of shrapnel go into his head.

:11:37. > :11:43.This whole head was taken away. Very shocking. So...

:11:44. > :11:52.This is Najeeb Afghan, and five years after tragedy struck him and

:11:53. > :11:55.his family in Helmand. After a brief return to Afghanistan, the chance of

:11:56. > :12:01.a scholarship in England to study for his A-levels presented itself.

:12:02. > :12:05.He is now studying at Stowe School, and it's on this track where he

:12:06. > :12:08.discovered his passion for running, breaking records in the

:12:09. > :12:11.steeplechase, and now he has a target of completing the London

:12:12. > :12:14.Marathon. His hard work and dedication have been a source of

:12:15. > :12:21.inspiration for those here at school. We are terrifically proud of

:12:22. > :12:25.him. He has really raised our global awareness of the issues in

:12:26. > :12:32.Afghanistan. It is really powerful. And it brings home to us what is

:12:33. > :12:36.going on there, which when it is something in the newspapers or on

:12:37. > :12:40.the television doesn't quite convey the reality of being there on the

:12:41. > :12:43.ground. Najeeb Afghan has set himself the ultimate test. His

:12:44. > :12:47.athletics coach is someone who knows that the hard work and determination

:12:48. > :12:51.he has put in will pay off during the marathon. I am absolutely full

:12:52. > :12:55.of confidence that he will get around the court and complete the

:12:56. > :13:01.marathon. I think he might be in for a bit of a surprise when he gets to

:13:02. > :13:04.the 30 kilometre mark, but his only run up -- as any runner will tell

:13:05. > :13:09.you, that doesn't really start till you've done 20 miles, but he is

:13:10. > :13:13.determined and he brings that sort of attitude to his training in

:13:14. > :13:18.particular, but to everything he does in his life. Najeeb Afghan will

:13:19. > :13:22.take it all in his stride, but what would give him the greatest

:13:23. > :13:24.satisfaction is completing the marathon and knowing that he has

:13:25. > :13:29.helped other children in his situation. I can imagine myself

:13:30. > :13:41.jumping into the, shouting, thank God, I am done, I have achieved this

:13:42. > :13:44.-- into the air. I will be happy for the good cause, to get these

:13:45. > :13:52.children's education. It will be amazing. Good luck to Najeeb and all

:13:53. > :14:02.of the other runners. That's all for now. Goodbye.

:14:03. > :14:04.Probably not seen as the most popular job.

:14:05. > :14:06.When I say I hate them, I mean I hate them.

:14:07. > :14:07.Who put that on it? Where's he gone?

:14:08. > :14:11.If there's one thing that drives us all crazy... This is wrong!

:14:12. > :14:14...it's parking. Just take your heart out and leave it at home.

:14:15. > :14:17.For some people, yellow lines are the end of life as we know it.

:14:18. > :14:22.For heaven's sake, this is a Sussex village!
