:00:09. > :00:14.Hello and welcome to the BBC Sports Centre. Over the next 15 minutes, we
:00:15. > :00:20.will have a look to the weekend's sport, including the latest from the
:00:21. > :00:32.third Ashes test. This is Saturday Sportsday.
:00:33. > :00:39.Manchester City against Arsenal has just kicked off. We will keep you
:00:40. > :00:44.updated. Also coming up, frustration for the swimmers at the European
:00:45. > :00:48.Short course Championships. They will have another tough test ahead
:00:49. > :00:52.against America. Jumping over the gender divide, the
:00:53. > :00:56.Japanese teenager leading the way at the Winter Olympics now that women
:00:57. > :01:01.can begin ski jumping. Ross Hutchins was last year by those
:01:02. > :01:20.with Hodgkin's inferno. This year he's coming back before that, I look
:01:21. > :01:27.at the day's sport headlines. Justin Rose bogeyed the final hole at the
:01:28. > :01:32.Austrian open. He is now five shots off the lead of Sergio Garcia.
:01:33. > :01:38.And Anne Williams, who campaigned to overturn a verdict of accidental
:01:39. > :01:45.death of her son at Hillsborough, is to be posthumously honoured at the
:01:46. > :01:50.sports personality awards tomorrow. Now look at the second day's play,
:01:51. > :01:53.where England's cricketers are trying to avoid defeat against
:01:54. > :02:00.Australia. It has been a decent day by recent standards. At the close of
:02:01. > :02:04.play, England are 180-4, trailing by 205 runs. Joe Wilson has the
:02:05. > :02:10.latest. After two days of the third Test,
:02:11. > :02:15.here we are not reflecting on Australia regaining the Ashes yet.
:02:16. > :02:24.But it feels" another day with England feeling frustrated. They
:02:25. > :02:27.would have been satisfied with a start they made. But at the end of
:02:28. > :02:30.the day they had lost four wickets, partly due to technology,
:02:31. > :02:33.the day they had lost four wickets, partly but Australia got Kevin
:02:34. > :02:38.Pietersen out in the way they would expect to. An ambitious shot trying
:02:39. > :02:41.to hit it over the head of Mitchell Johnson at mid arm, athletically
:02:42. > :02:47.caught. Michael Carberry played his part. But when he spoke to us at the
:02:48. > :02:52.close of play, naturally he was reflecting on that dismissal.
:02:53. > :02:59.Hanging on in there is a dangerous terminology when you bat. You are
:03:00. > :03:04.out there to score runs. Kevin is positive player. That is what has
:03:05. > :03:10.made him successful. He does things that not many of us can. It is a
:03:11. > :03:19.shock many of us have seen him play time and time again. It is
:03:20. > :03:26.disappointing, but for him and asked, we want people to play
:03:27. > :03:31.naturally. -- and asked. At the close of play, I grabbed a word with
:03:32. > :03:36.Australia's waited ever fast bowler. The point I raised wasn't just a
:03:37. > :03:40.case of individual Australian bowlers being outstanding again
:03:41. > :03:46.today. It was the fact they bowled as a unit, effectively keeping to
:03:47. > :03:51.their plans. They have been impressive this series. They have
:03:52. > :03:56.executed their game plan is very well. They have put a lot of thought
:03:57. > :03:59.into it. They have got different plans for different batsmen. And
:04:00. > :04:05.they are working. They are getting results. That is what you want. To
:04:06. > :04:10.see something so effective, it has been brilliant. It suffocated
:04:11. > :04:15.England. Wickets haven't been falling, but other times they have
:04:16. > :04:24.been dropping them cheaply. I have never seen a match where I wanted
:04:25. > :04:28.the other team to win. You don't want to see England come over here
:04:29. > :04:33.and not really shown any heart. You want it to be a good, hard contest,
:04:34. > :04:40.hopefully with your team coming out.
:04:41. > :04:45.England will resume behind. Ben spokes -- Ben Stokes and Ian Bell
:04:46. > :04:49.are at the crease. There is still time to fight. But if they are going
:04:50. > :04:54.to make Amini for contribution, they need to do it on the third day here
:04:55. > :05:00.in Perth. -- a meaningful contribution.
:05:01. > :05:04.And for more Ashes analysis, Close of Play is on the BBC News Channel
:05:05. > :05:07.at 1.30 this afternoon. Now, Team GB had their most
:05:08. > :05:11.successful Olympics at London 2012, but no gold medals were won in the
:05:12. > :05:13.pool. This weekend, at the European Short Course Championships in
:05:14. > :05:17.Denmark, Fran Halsall has missed out on a medal again, finishing fifth in
:05:18. > :05:20.the 100 metres freestyle. After Denmark, Halsall joins a European
:05:21. > :05:23.team to take on the United States in swimming's equivalent of the Ryder
:05:24. > :05:25.Cup. Nick Hope looks ahead to the Duel in the Pool.
:05:26. > :05:29.For British swimming, London 2012 will be remembered for tears rather
:05:30. > :05:34.than triumph. Rebecca Adlington claimed two bronze medals. But there
:05:35. > :05:44.were countless near misses, none more so than with fun house all. --
:05:45. > :05:48.van with Halsall. I trained for years to get a medal, so it hit me
:05:49. > :05:54.right afterwards, that is done. It was a massive lull. I felt numb,
:05:55. > :05:58.really, afterwards. I had to get out of the country. I didn't want to
:05:59. > :06:03.hear about anything to do with Olympics. It was challenging to then
:06:04. > :06:09.get back into the water and not be scared of coming forth again. After
:06:10. > :06:09.months, Halsall arrived at the World Championships with renewed
:06:10. > :06:23.condiments. -- confidence. It was a bit of relief. It was a bit
:06:24. > :06:31.like, oh, I can do this. I am all right at this swimming lark. In the
:06:32. > :06:37.long-term, she aims for medals at the next Olympics. Next week she can
:06:38. > :06:41.see how well she is progressing. I am really excited about this. I have
:06:42. > :06:50.done two already. I went to Atlanta and did one on the American turf,
:06:51. > :07:06.which was hard. It is fabulous, my kind of swimming. Are you going to
:07:07. > :07:09.beat the Americans? Definitely! And you can follow the European
:07:10. > :07:13.team's progress at Duel in the Pool on BBC Radio5 Live next weekend. One
:07:14. > :07:16.of the final barriers for female competitors at the Olympics is
:07:17. > :07:20.falling. For the first time, ski jump will be open to both genders at
:07:21. > :07:23.next year's Sochi Winter Games. The favourite for that first gold medal
:07:24. > :07:27.is a Japanese teenager who is just four foot 11 inches tall. Ollie
:07:28. > :07:29.Williams has been to meet the petite prodigy at the Ski Jump World Cup in
:07:30. > :07:33.Lillehammer. It has taken years and a court
:07:34. > :07:38.battle for woman to win the right to ski jump at the Olympic Games. Now
:07:39. > :07:44.the fight has been won, a new one begins. The favourite for gold in
:07:45. > :07:53.2014 is one of the youngest keen -- skiers around. She is just 17.
:07:54. > :07:57.TRANSLATION: I am lucky to jump at a time when things have got better for
:07:58. > :08:01.us. Female ski jumpers have had to overcome all kinds of challenges in
:08:02. > :08:05.tough times to get to where we are. It is thanks to the female ski
:08:06. > :08:13.jumpers before me that I can be so happy and who I am today. Women's
:08:14. > :08:15.ski jump is new for 2014. This is the most important season in the
:08:16. > :08:20.lives of the athletes jumping behind me right now. Their first chance to
:08:21. > :08:24.win Olympic gold is in just two months. Whenever people write about
:08:25. > :08:33.you, they always mention your height. Does it bother you? I do
:08:34. > :08:38.wish I were taller. But you can't change the way you were born. What I
:08:39. > :08:44.am trying to do is make the most out of what potential I have. Japan has
:08:45. > :08:52.an impressive history in men's ski jump. They won team gold in 1998.
:08:53. > :09:00.Now fans at home expect the same from her. TRANSLATION: She was the
:09:01. > :09:04.overall champion at last season's World Cup. She is top of
:09:05. > :09:09.everybody's list when it comes to gold medal candidates. Lots of fans,
:09:10. > :09:16.well, the public have high hopes for her. If I were to win a gold medal,
:09:17. > :09:19.it wouldn't just be my gold medal, it would be a gold medal for all the
:09:20. > :09:30.people who have supported me up to now, all the people who have cheered
:09:31. > :09:32.me on, and everybody around me. Olympic bronze medallist Lutalo
:09:33. > :09:36.Muhammad and European Champion Aaron Cook both eased into the last 16 of
:09:37. > :09:39.the World Taekwondo Grand Prix in Manchester this morning. Britain
:09:40. > :09:42.already has a gold after Mahama Cho claimed a sudden-death overtime win
:09:43. > :09:48.over Brazil's Felix. He says it's great preparation ahead of the Rio
:09:49. > :09:53.Olympics. It is a great start. We have got to
:09:54. > :10:01.keep up the performance. 2016 is my dream. It is everything that I want.
:10:02. > :10:04.I will be working for it. British tennis player Ross Hutchins
:10:05. > :10:08.is preparing for the start of the tennis season at the Brisbane Open
:10:09. > :10:11.later this month. Hutchins and Colin Flaming have reached two Grand Slam
:10:12. > :10:14.quarter finals and won three titles together. They're aiming for more
:10:15. > :10:18.success in 2014. But as David Ornstein has been finding out, being
:10:19. > :10:27.on court is a world away from where Hutchins was this time last year.
:10:28. > :10:33.I don't know how many of you know the story... My best friend ever
:10:34. > :10:38.there, Ross Hutchins, was diagnosed with cancer. He has dealt with it
:10:39. > :10:41.incredibly well. It was a summer he will never forget. He conquered
:10:42. > :10:45.cancer and Andy Murray won Wimbledon. But Hutchins has a
:10:46. > :10:53.remarkable view on which meant most to him. The fact he has been wanting
:10:54. > :10:55.it for so long and it has been a 26 year dream, now it had come through
:10:56. > :11:02.commit was the most incredible moment of the year. The cancer, the
:11:03. > :11:06.treatment, you forget about it. The triumph came in the same month that
:11:07. > :11:11.Hutchins was given the all clear. A year previously, it was very
:11:12. > :11:15.different. Hutchins was playing through severe back pain and soon
:11:16. > :11:21.knew it wasn't a normal injury. It was that Christmas when the bad news
:11:22. > :11:29.arrived. As soon as I spoke to the doctor, I knew it was cancer. I held
:11:30. > :11:35.my brother. There was a moment when I told my mum. That was it.
:11:36. > :11:40.Literally five seconds of tears and emotion and it was, this is reality,
:11:41. > :11:43.get on with this. This is life. You are going to have to do something
:11:44. > :11:48.here to get in the right frame of mind to beat this thing. He expected
:11:49. > :11:50.a two-month course of chemotherapy but the cancer was more advanced
:11:51. > :11:58.than first feared. The treatment would be longer and more intense. It
:11:59. > :12:04.is almost like car in your body. -- tar. You realise this is the thing
:12:05. > :12:10.that is going to put you on the mend. That place is here, back on
:12:11. > :12:14.the court and preparing for the new season with his partner, Colin
:12:15. > :12:20.Fleming. They are aiming to become the world's number one pairing. It
:12:21. > :12:24.was here at the National tennis Centre in Roehampton that the
:12:25. > :12:27.comeback began and has rapidly gathered pace. Having won the
:12:28. > :12:33.biggest fight of his life, Hutchins can now resume his battle from the
:12:34. > :12:37.baseline. And now we can go back to normal waves. We can get focused to
:12:38. > :12:44.try to be successful on the tennis court. All these things are so
:12:45. > :12:50.exciting because I knew -- know how different it can be. Now I am back.
:12:51. > :12:54.I couldn't be happier. Just before we go, a quick update on
:12:55. > :12:59.the early kick-off in the Premier League, Manchester City against
:13:00. > :13:01.Arsenal. It is still 0-0. 13 minutes gone in that game.
:13:02. > :13:03.There's commentary over on BBC Radio5 Live.
:13:04. > :13:06.And finally, it's the 60th anniversary of Sports Personality of
:13:07. > :13:09.the Year tomorrow night. The show is live from Leeds. We'll leave you
:13:10. > :13:11.with the ten sportsmen and women who are looking to succeed Sir Bradley
:13:12. > :13:20.Wiggins. Goodbye. Henry Cooper. Princess Ann. Nick
:13:21. > :13:50.Faldo. Paula Radcliffe. David Beckham. Ryan Giggs. Mark
:13:51. > :13:54.Cavendish. Bradley Wiggins. Here are the contenders for 2013.
