:00:07. > :00:14.Welcome to the BBC sports Centre, today we are looking at Gaelic

:00:15. > :00:18.football. Ireland's biggest sport despite still being an amateur game.

:00:19. > :00:20.And we will see whose prayers were answered in a very special game of

:00:21. > :00:44.cricket. This is Saturday Sportsday. Let's take a look at some of today's

:00:45. > :00:48.sporting headlines, we start with Formula One, Lewis Hamilton will be

:00:49. > :00:52.looking to claw back more points from his Mercedes team-mate Nico

:00:53. > :00:55.Rosberg. Qualifying for the Singapore Grand Prix takes place in

:00:56. > :01:00.just over an hours time and we will be there later on in the programme.

:01:01. > :01:05.Saint Helens are the team through to the semifinals of the super league

:01:06. > :01:10.play-offs after thrashing Castleford Tigers 1-0 last night. Today

:01:11. > :01:14.Warrington play Widnes whilst Leeds take on Catalan Dragons. And police

:01:15. > :01:18.are investigating the abuse Andy Murray received on social media

:01:19. > :01:22.after declaring his support for the yes campaign at the Scottish

:01:23. > :01:23.referendum. They have confirmed they will take action against those

:01:24. > :01:25.involved. The pinnacle of the Gaelic football

:01:26. > :01:28.season takes place tomorrow with the All-Ireland final at Croke Park

:01:29. > :01:30.- between Donegal and Kerry. The players are household names

:01:31. > :01:34.there, yet none of them are paid - despite the game's popularity both

:01:35. > :01:56.in Ireland and now It has existed for over 130 years

:01:57. > :02:01.but Gaelic football continues to grow. Tomorrow's all Ireland final

:02:02. > :02:07.will be watched by a global audience of millions. But unlike other sports

:02:08. > :02:14.and despite the money flowing into the game it remains strictly

:02:15. > :02:18.amateur. This is Croke Park, home of 82,000 spectators but they are not

:02:19. > :02:23.here to watch millionaire sports men, they are instead watching

:02:24. > :02:27.teachers, bricklayers and students. Today they are superstars, tomorrow

:02:28. > :02:30.they go back to work. In many respects Gaelic football is

:02:31. > :02:36.professional, apart from the fact that the players are not paid. In

:02:37. > :02:41.April they signed a multi-million pound worldwide television deal, the

:02:42. > :02:45.governing body consisting 86% of all revenue goes back into new stadiums,

:02:46. > :02:51.supporting clubs and grassroots. But it will not go into players pockets.

:02:52. > :02:57.I think the FO 's is firmly amateur, there is no movement to change that.

:02:58. > :03:02.In the next 100 years it will remain amateur. The key to this is the

:03:03. > :03:06.culture of the sport, unlike football there are no transfers,

:03:07. > :03:11.players can only play for the club and if good enough the county of

:03:12. > :03:16.their birth. Ehrlich football is intrinsically entwined in Irish

:03:17. > :03:20.life. You think of the most important thing in your life right

:03:21. > :03:26.now, work, family, whatever. You double that and add some then you

:03:27. > :03:32.get to the point of what Gaelic football means to people in this

:03:33. > :03:38.country. You want to win for the guys you go to school with, the guys

:03:39. > :03:47.you socialise with, I think if we added money, it would water down

:03:48. > :03:52.what it means to us. And all Ireland winner with Armagh in 2002, today he

:03:53. > :03:56.is coaching where it all started, back to his roots, routes he

:03:57. > :04:01.believes will not blossom into professionalism. If the game goes

:04:02. > :04:07.professional as it did with rugby that would be the death knell for

:04:08. > :04:10.all clubs. It was the death knell for a rugby clubs in this country

:04:11. > :04:15.and it would be the death knell for all clubs. The teams were at Wembley

:04:16. > :04:25.giving London at taste of Gaelic football. Gaelic football has indeed

:04:26. > :04:31.travelled along way from humble beginnings and even if you don't

:04:32. > :04:34.quite understand the game you can't fail to grasp the Passion.

:04:35. > :04:36.The rivalries in Gaelic football, like most sports,

:04:37. > :04:39.go back for many years, but there's a fairly new one that's grabbing

:04:40. > :04:43.Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg will battle it out

:04:44. > :04:46.The Singapore Grand Prix takes place tomorrow,

:04:47. > :04:48.and qualifying gets underway in just over an hour's time.

:04:49. > :04:56.Suzi Perry and David Coulthard are there for us.

:04:57. > :05:02.Welcome to Singapore, all the action happening under floodlights as it is

:05:03. > :05:08.an eight race against the stupendous Singapore cityscape. Six races to

:05:09. > :05:12.go, what a prospect this weekend? This has become a Grassick Grand

:05:13. > :05:18.Prix already on the calendar, -- classic. The battle between the

:05:19. > :05:25.Mercedes drivers, a circuit which makes it Red Bull, Ferrari showing

:05:26. > :05:29.pace, a lot of unanswered questions. Just 22 points separating Nico

:05:30. > :05:33.Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, who has the momentum moving forward? Nico

:05:34. > :05:36.Rosberg has been leading the championship for most of the year so

:05:37. > :05:41.you have to say he has the momentum but you just feel Lewis Hamilton has

:05:42. > :05:46.got that little bit of speed, Nico Rosberg is a great driver with great

:05:47. > :05:51.intelligence but Lewis Hamilton on our role is someone that can be very

:05:52. > :05:57.difficult to beat, it will be fascinating to watch. And double

:05:58. > :06:02.points in Abu Dhabi as well. We have factories closing down on Mercedes

:06:03. > :06:06.this weekend, teams that could take points away from both drivers, a

:06:07. > :06:08.tantalising prospect and you can catch all of the best bets on BBC1

:06:09. > :06:18.at five past 10pm. -- ten past five. Lewis Hamilton is known to pray

:06:19. > :06:21.ahead of important races and plenty of sportsmen and women from time to

:06:22. > :06:24.time wish God was on their side. And if ever there was

:06:25. > :06:27.a match where that might actually be the case - it was yesterday

:06:28. > :06:30.at Canturbury, as for the first time ever, the Church of England

:06:31. > :06:33.played the Vatican at cricket. Our man Joe WIlson

:06:34. > :06:37.was there to watch. Canterbury 's Cathedral, the mother

:06:38. > :06:41.church of the worldwide Anglican Communion, a place of thought,

:06:42. > :06:46.praise and utility. All of which are also frequently found at Canterbury

:06:47. > :06:52.'s cricket ground. Two teams united and abided by Christianity for this

:06:53. > :06:56.was Vatican against Aberdeen, all players religious practitioners or

:06:57. > :07:05.at least trainees. -- against Anglican. There is obligation to

:07:06. > :07:15.take the umpire 's decision as final, to walk off or get on with

:07:16. > :07:20.the game. No denominational -based sledging? We were joking, saying we

:07:21. > :07:28.don't understand sledging so that is probably a good thing. We will play

:07:29. > :07:37.in a good spirit today and enjoy it, but we will certainly play to win.

:07:38. > :07:40.The Vatican elephant is made up almost entirely of South Asian

:07:41. > :07:46.theological students who are training in Rome. It is, as they

:07:47. > :07:52.say, a broad church. In their 20 overs the Vatican elephant made 106,

:07:53. > :07:56.this match had been arranged to highlight the global effort to end

:07:57. > :08:02.human trafficking and slave owning, I united front across faiths and

:08:03. > :08:08.borders. But nobody forgot there was a match to win. 12 runs off the

:08:09. > :08:13.penultimate over gave victory for the Archbishop 11. And who arrived

:08:14. > :08:20.in time to see them do it? The man himself. It was a very good match, a

:08:21. > :08:25.very good match, evenly balanced, it could have gone either way. Do you

:08:26. > :08:33.think this could be a permanent fixture? A rematch in Rome? I see

:08:34. > :08:37.this level we do it again. -- icy display hope we do this again.

:08:38. > :08:40.Well Warwickshire could do with some divine intervention at Lord's -

:08:41. > :08:47.battng first in the final of the One-Day Cup against Durham

:08:48. > :08:52.You can get the latest on 5 live Sports Extra and

:08:53. > :08:56.That's it from me and the Saturday Sportsday team.
