:00:22. > :00:27.Sportsday. On the show today we are talking hockey and skeleton, and as
:00:28. > :00:31.football remembers the Paris attacks with the French national anthem to
:00:32. > :00:33.be played at Premier League and Scottish Premier League fixtures,
:00:34. > :00:43.we're looking at how what happened last Friday in the French capital
:00:44. > :00:49.has affected sport. So, just over a week since the world was rocked by
:00:50. > :00:56.the terror attacks in Paris. Alongside the bars and the concert
:00:57. > :01:00.hall, the other target was the national stadium. For many, life
:01:01. > :01:08.will never be the same. But how has it affected sport? 9:20pm local time
:01:09. > :01:14.in Paris. France are playing Germany. A Bond goes off outside the
:01:15. > :01:19.Stade de France. But for the actions of a security man, the blast would
:01:20. > :01:25.have been inside the ground. As bloody chaos swept across the city,
:01:26. > :01:38.both teams are kept inside the stadium after the match. What
:01:39. > :01:41.happened that weekend was clearly an attack...
:01:42. > :01:45.Silence as a charity match organised by David Beckham to raise money for
:01:46. > :01:59.a global children's charity. Back played in Paris two years ago.
:02:00. > :02:04.-- David Beckham played in Paris. I've got so much love for Paris,
:02:05. > :02:08.it's a special place. These things happen all over the world and its
:02:09. > :02:12.devastating to see. We pass our condolences on to people who have
:02:13. > :02:20.lost loved ones. For three days after the attacks, France was in
:02:21. > :02:26.mourning. Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert chose to pay
:02:27. > :02:33.their respects at the O2 in London. Herbert wanted his tennis to send a
:02:34. > :02:39.message. We play for what happened in Paris. Our hearts are with all
:02:40. > :02:44.those people. Even more incredibly, the France team that had been so
:02:45. > :02:49.close to the horror when to get with -- went ahead with their friendly
:02:50. > :02:51.against England. Not all of them had wanted to play. The FA turned the
:02:52. > :02:58.game into the friendliest of friendlies. French colours, French
:02:59. > :03:03.values. The French anthem sung by a list man as well. La Marseillaise
:03:04. > :03:09.will Claye Premier League rounds but the focus is on security as well as
:03:10. > :03:13.solidarity. The policing ahead of England against France may not be a
:03:14. > :03:18.one-off. The cancellation of two international friendlies in the week
:03:19. > :03:22.due to security concerns shows the mood. The government's advice to
:03:23. > :03:26.those coming here to the Etihad Stadium and other sporting venues
:03:27. > :03:31.this weekend is to be alert but not alarmed. Premier League clubs have
:03:32. > :03:36.been briefed about security. Nothing has changed officially but going to
:03:37. > :03:41.a game will feel -- may feel different. Sport maybe escapism, but
:03:42. > :03:48.it can't change everything. Great Britain's hockey teams are aiming to
:03:49. > :03:51.finish 2015 with a flourish. Great Britain women's team are the
:03:52. > :03:58.champions come but in Argentina it is Team GB who take part. The men's
:03:59. > :04:03.team are also in action. This is vital preparation for next year's
:04:04. > :04:10.Rio Olympics. One last effort for Britain's hockey players before the
:04:11. > :04:14.end of the year before the Olympics, to test themselves against the
:04:15. > :04:19.world's best, like they will have to do in Brazil next summer. Both the
:04:20. > :04:26.men and the women have already qualified for the Olympics, but this
:04:27. > :04:30.time the preparations for Rio really begin in earnest. Not only that but
:04:31. > :04:34.competition for places in teams in Brazil also begins. The men's squad
:04:35. > :04:41.really does have a fresh look to it, with eight regulars missing the trip
:04:42. > :04:45.to the subcontinent. Guys who have played a lot of international hockey
:04:46. > :04:49.over the last few years, we've left they few of them at home. We're
:04:50. > :04:53.looking at other players and see we could potentially use them in the
:04:54. > :04:56.Olympics next year. One of those hopefuls has over 90 Scotland caps
:04:57. > :05:04.but only made his GB debut last month. That is the reason I started
:05:05. > :05:08.playing hockey, to try and represent my country in the Olympics. I think
:05:09. > :05:11.the main thing is to focus on this tournament and try to make myself
:05:12. > :05:18.better and get involved more in the team, and never say never.
:05:19. > :05:29.The women's squad is more settled, but one addition already has Olympic
:05:30. > :05:33.experience. Krista Cullen retired after winning that bronze in London
:05:34. > :05:39.and now she is back for a shot at gold in Rio. -- Crista Cullen. I've
:05:40. > :05:43.and now she is back for a shot at given myself a little short window
:05:44. > :05:48.to try to get myself back into the squad. Obviously I wanted to be part
:05:49. > :05:51.of that, even if it is just making selection more competitive or
:05:52. > :05:54.whatever it may be, whatever I can give to make sure this team can
:05:55. > :05:56.genuinely compete for a gold medal in Rio, because that's what it's all
:05:57. > :06:04.about. Good luck to Crista Cullen. Now
:06:05. > :06:10.commits Britain's most successful Winter Olympic sport, and when this
:06:11. > :06:15.season's skeleton World Cup gets under way, there will be no Lizzy
:06:16. > :06:25.Yarnold, taking a year out, or Shelley Rudman, on maternity leave.
:06:26. > :06:33.Now the sport's hopes lie with the horse rider turned skeleton athlete
:06:34. > :06:36.Laura. It's just like riding a roller-coaster over and over again.
:06:37. > :06:40.You just hope you don't hurt yourself too much on the way down.
:06:41. > :06:43.You need to be able to think quickly with a really clear head when
:06:44. > :06:49.everything is going crazy around you. Many find skeleton exciting,
:06:50. > :06:53.but only if you can excel. Laura has already shown that she has huge
:06:54. > :06:56.potential, winning medals last season, but her career could have
:06:57. > :07:06.been many different. -- very different. I got into skeleton in
:07:07. > :07:09.2009 off the back of the project Girls for Gold. I was event riding
:07:10. > :07:13.professionally. To make the transition was quite tough because
:07:14. > :07:16.it meant letting a few people down who had put a lot of trust and
:07:17. > :07:20.effort into what I was doing. I remember watching skeleton and
:07:21. > :07:30.thinking this is pretty crazy but I want to have a go at it. Deas did
:07:31. > :07:40.not qualify for the Winter Olympics in sorry, where Lizzy Yarnold took
:07:41. > :07:44.gold. She is now taking a year out, but... It's really good to give
:07:45. > :07:48.other athletes a chance to perform at their best. Just like I did. I
:07:49. > :07:50.was the rookie and I performed, and I
:07:51. > :08:01.was the rookie and I performed, and as well. They train here in Bath
:08:02. > :08:05.just like Laura Deas. She is determined to become the sport's
:08:06. > :08:07.next superstar. It's a really environment acrobatic space
:08:08. > :08:13.inspiring environment to be in because you believe you can deliver
:08:14. > :08:16.a medal at the Olympic Games. Lizzy Yarnold is taking a year out and
:08:17. > :08:20.we're not sure if Shelley will come back. How much do you want to see
:08:21. > :08:24.them come back? What this programme does really well is breed strong
:08:25. > :08:29.internal competition. From that respect it would be really good to
:08:30. > :08:32.have them back. And also they are relieved good friends of mine, so it
:08:33. > :08:40.would be nice to have them back on the circuit! Laura Deas of Great
:08:41. > :08:44.Britain! Just to remind tennis fans that in an hour's time here on BBC
:08:45. > :08:49.One there is live coverage of the World Tour Finals, Djokovic against
:08:50. > :08:53.Nadal. And there has been a goal in the early Premier League Dickov,
:08:54. > :09:01.Manchester United leading Watford 1-0. Memphis Depay with it. From all
:09:02. > :09:12.of us can whatever you are doing this weekend, make it a good one.
:09:13. > :09:17.They're somehow making our eyes skate right over it.
