:00:31. > :00:33.Fancy a trip to Edmonton, Canada, this April?

:00:34. > :00:37.Well, that's the prize in store for the winners of this trophy.

:00:38. > :00:42.A place in the World Championships representing Scotland.

:00:43. > :00:45.Welcome to the Dewars Centre in Perth for highlights of the 2017

:00:46. > :00:52.It's a battle between veteran David Murdoch and a new kid

:00:53. > :01:03.on the block, Murdoch searching for a seventh title

:01:04. > :01:06.against Bruce Mouat, the 2016 World Junior Champion,

:01:07. > :01:08.who was just ten years old when Murdoch won the first

:01:09. > :01:13.With a total of ten teams taking part, the round-robin stages

:01:14. > :01:17.took place over five days, each team playing nine matches

:01:18. > :01:21.to see who progressed to the knockout stages.

:01:22. > :01:25.So, this is how the table looked after the round-robin stage.

:01:26. > :01:27.The first three teams all with the same record -

:01:28. > :01:33.But Team Murdoch topped the standings by virtue

:01:34. > :01:36.of their head-to-head records with Kyle Smith and Tom Brewster.

:01:37. > :01:38.The top four was completed by Bruce Mouat, who beat

:01:39. > :01:45.In the knockout stages, the top two faced off for automatic

:01:46. > :01:47.qualification for the final, with the loser going

:01:48. > :02:01.And it was Team Murdoch who beat Team Smith 4-3.

:02:02. > :02:03.The other semifinalists would be the winner of the page play-off

:02:04. > :02:06.And that was 22-year-old Mouat, who dispatched defending

:02:07. > :02:09.champion Tom Brewster in one of the championship's big upsets.

:02:10. > :02:17.Team Mouat were fresh off a gold medal in the World University Games

:02:18. > :02:20.in Kazakhstan, and they maintained that form for the semi,

:02:21. > :02:22.overturning a two-shot deficit in the final end to snatch

:02:23. > :02:31.a sensational 7-6 victory from a distraught Kyle Smith.

:02:32. > :02:33.So, it's last years' runner-up David Murdoch against Bruce Mouat

:02:34. > :02:37.Now, there's a 16-year age gap between the skips.

:02:38. > :02:45.Team Mouat won their World Junior Championship in Denmark last year.

:02:46. > :02:47.Lead was Derrick Sloan, second Gregor Cannon,

:02:48. > :03:00.I think that David's obviously been around for so long and

:03:01. > :03:05.Yeah, I was ten years old, and obviously I'm really excited

:03:06. > :03:12.Well, you're watching as a kid growing up so it's amazing to be

:03:13. > :03:17.Is it a time for the changing of the guard?

:03:18. > :03:22.Murdoch's rink is the same as the team which took silver

:03:23. > :03:26.Michael Goodfellow the lead, Scott Andrews second

:03:27. > :03:33.I'm not saying you're a veteran by any means but you've won this

:03:34. > :03:35.so many times representing Scotland across the world and

:03:36. > :03:38.done incredibly well, and this young guy who's coming in,

:03:39. > :03:41.and he's hungry and desperate for stuff, right?

:03:42. > :03:46.Yeah, we're still hungry, too, you know, and so am I, to be honest.

:03:47. > :03:49.There's been a lot of hard work been put in to be here for this week

:03:50. > :03:52.and I still crave that win, and my team are desperate

:03:53. > :03:55.to win this as well, so it's going to be a tremendous

:03:56. > :03:57.final and we're excited to get going.

:03:58. > :04:00.The winners, of course, go to Edmonton in Canada.

:04:01. > :04:03.Do you even think about that or is it all about what goes

:04:04. > :04:08.It's all about the next few hours, I'm afraid, yeah.

:04:09. > :04:10.You know, you can't really think about too far ahead.

:04:11. > :04:14.You have to really focus on the job in hand and we've got a good grasp

:04:15. > :04:17.of our strategy for the day and what we want to achieve.

:04:18. > :04:19.Bruce says now is the time for a changing of the guard.

:04:20. > :04:25.No, we'll hang about for a little bit longer, so we'll see

:04:26. > :04:27.This is the last Scottish Championships

:04:28. > :04:31.before next year's Olympics, so a good performance

:04:32. > :04:34.here is vital to be in the frame for Team GB selection.

:04:35. > :04:39.Added pressure, then, on David Murdoch to keep his hopes

:04:40. > :04:43.alive for a chance to repeat the heroics of Sochi.

:04:44. > :04:45.A reminder of the format in the final.

:04:46. > :04:49.Points are accumulated for the stones closest

:04:50. > :04:51.to the T over ten ends, as long as they're

:04:52. > :04:56.Each player takes their two shots in the same sequence

:04:57. > :05:02.Well, it was Murdoch who got the final

:05:03. > :05:08.With the hammer in the first end and seven stones in play,

:05:09. > :05:11.he had a chance for a massive score if he could pull off

:05:12. > :05:20.He couldn't quite convert it, though, and had to settle for a two.

:05:21. > :05:24.Mouat bounced back in the next end with a two of his own and we join it

:05:25. > :05:58.Commentary comes from Bob Kelly and Logan Gray.

:05:59. > :06:00.COMMENTATOR: First stone of the third end under way.

:06:01. > :06:16.Michael Goodfellow's been asked to come round it.

:06:17. > :06:20.Yeah, as things currently stand for Team Murdoch,

:06:21. > :06:22.not too much threat with that guard, not really anywhere

:06:23. > :06:27.Of course the game plan when you don't have the last stone

:06:28. > :06:30.is to try to get them on the centre line and block the path

:06:31. > :06:33.into the middle for the team with the last stone.

:06:34. > :06:36.So a little bit of work to be done here already for Team Mouat.

:06:37. > :06:38.Yeah, and it's a very long guard, too.

:06:39. > :06:41.Big distance between them with the swing there is in the ice.

:06:42. > :06:45.That isn't really acting as much of a guard.

:06:46. > :06:49.Even if Mouat got one round behind he'd be able to play a quiet way

:06:50. > :07:20.Didn't quite curl as much as he'd have liked but got a result.

:07:21. > :07:24.Mm, I think the sweeper's just a little bit keen there on that one.

:07:25. > :07:32.Just took it those few inches extra that weren't required.

:07:33. > :07:43.If he can get past the guard, though.

:07:44. > :07:51.Just down-weight maybe, do you think, Logan?

:07:52. > :07:58.We saw a couple of takeouts in the first end really take off

:07:59. > :08:03.Yeah, just the same thing happened there again.

:08:04. > :08:15.An aggressive call here from Bruce Mouat.

:08:16. > :08:22.Going to try and draw another one in here.

:08:23. > :08:28.I wasn't sure whether it was a guard or a short one he called.

:08:29. > :08:32.Something definitely kind of covering the inside of

:08:33. > :08:42.So they're looking for this one to curl right across

:08:43. > :08:46.It looks like they need something, looking for it in the kind

:08:47. > :09:01.Right, don't need to miss it completely, but...

:09:02. > :09:04.Depends what Murdoch does with this one whether it was right or not.

:09:05. > :09:08.Still room there to get in with a quiet weight,

:09:09. > :09:12.get to the nose or even just stay inside of the red Mouat stone

:09:13. > :09:18.It's one of those ones actually, I'm not a huge fan of that call

:09:19. > :09:20.but I don't know what the right call was there...

:09:21. > :09:23.No, exactly, and I kind of go along with you.

:09:24. > :09:25.There wasn't really a very good one, was there, for him?

:09:26. > :09:27.The stones were sitting quite awkwardly.

:09:28. > :09:29.Yes, it's difficult to say if that was the right

:09:30. > :09:32.time to push the button, but with this result,

:09:33. > :09:34.I think Team Murdoch have a chance to take the upper hand.

:09:35. > :09:52.There's no hit, of course, on the red in the centre...

:09:53. > :09:56.Sorry, the yellow on the centre line there and roll in behind the guards

:09:57. > :09:59.because it would jam on their own stone, so just having

:10:00. > :10:04.Don't have last stone so can't afford to have too many

:10:05. > :10:09.And have to roll away from the cover.

:10:10. > :10:11.But hopefully keep it to beat the other yellow,

:10:12. > :10:27.Oh, they'd love to stick around till lie two here but it's just

:10:28. > :10:36.It might be on the rings but it's certainly not beating

:10:37. > :10:45.Scott Andrews could play a takeout to lie two here but that would place

:10:46. > :10:46.both of their stones behind the T-line.

:10:47. > :11:04.That red at the back is really not a worry

:11:05. > :11:07.That's something that can be removed later.

:11:08. > :11:09.It's not in front of the T-line, more importantly.

:11:10. > :11:11.Something it can maybe rest against later on.

:11:12. > :11:23.Actually comes right out the other side.

:11:24. > :11:26.Chris, now, and his team will be able to play down the right-hand

:11:27. > :11:28.side as we look at it, round the outside of

:11:29. > :11:39.He is looking like following it in, though, Logan.

:11:40. > :11:48.Seen that, so won't have to worry about this one staying out.

:11:49. > :11:51.I think the deciding factor is definitely that we have seen

:11:52. > :11:53.a few stones coming down this line that aren't completely

:11:54. > :11:56.locked into coming round the other side of the guard.

:11:57. > :12:00.Which looks like a more natural way to play the shot.

:12:01. > :12:42.Playing a little bit of a dangerous game now,

:12:43. > :12:47.Which is fine as long as you keep making the shots

:12:48. > :12:50.but when you don't have last stone, if you just miss one

:12:51. > :12:57.Trying to move that red stone just played.

:12:58. > :13:07.A huge swing, as we know, does it get punished?

:13:08. > :13:38.There's nothing between that stone and the stationary guard.

:13:39. > :13:40.But they really pile in with that draw, don't they?

:13:41. > :13:45.It still was going at some angle and the curl was taking it.

:13:46. > :14:12.Once again, without the last stone, just struggling to string

:14:13. > :14:19.Kind of one made shot and then one missed one.

:14:20. > :14:21.That's why they are finding themselves in these

:14:22. > :14:30.Those three yellow stones on the right-hand side

:14:31. > :14:51.Now a chance for Team Murdoch to lie three or maybe even four.

:14:52. > :15:08.Certainly give him three, it could be four.

:15:09. > :15:12.I think that's the shot that Bobby was indicating there.

:15:13. > :15:25.There aren't even any really good multiple takeouts, I don't think,

:15:26. > :15:34.I think he's going to have to draw his way out of this if he's

:15:35. > :15:40.Well, he pretty much did that in the first end, didn't he?

:15:41. > :15:43.He's going to have to do that again here but you wouldn't like to be

:15:44. > :15:46.in this position every time that you don't have the last stone.

:15:47. > :15:52.Because you only have to fail once and the game

:15:53. > :15:55.starts to slip from you, so four stones to come.

:15:56. > :15:59.May need another good one after this as well.

:16:00. > :16:23.Certainly needs to exercise that in this end.

:16:24. > :16:45.Not enough curl and already seen them make a couple of nice

:16:46. > :16:53.takeouts down this line, Team Murdoch.

:16:54. > :16:55.Yeah, I think the takeout's not necessarily worrying Murdoch,

:16:56. > :16:57.it's where he's going to leave the shooter.

:16:58. > :17:05.Confident he's going to be able to get rid of this one.

:17:06. > :17:08.But they want to try and get the shooter into good position

:17:09. > :17:19.Certainly if he can get rid of the red, avoid the back yellow,

:17:20. > :17:21.the one furthest back, he could certainly

:17:22. > :17:25.Just got to watch this back one here.

:17:26. > :17:27.You know, that's almost the best shot.

:17:28. > :17:31.They're certainly looking for a big end, and why not, of course?

:17:32. > :17:38.It means they have to dice a little bit with the guard.

:17:39. > :17:40.But as we've seen before, once these stones in this

:17:41. > :17:43.in-turn start to go, they really take off.

:17:44. > :17:56.So a lot of weight control required here.

:17:57. > :17:58.The amount of curl very dependent on the weight thrown.

:17:59. > :18:08.Played the shot a little bit better, he wouldn't have got

:18:09. > :18:13.These are the shots you really don't want to be playing as a skip.

:18:14. > :18:15.You don't have the last stone lying five against now.

:18:16. > :18:18.Courtesy of this shot by Dave Murdoch.

:18:19. > :18:25.Just pushes it far enough as well, that wide red.

:18:26. > :18:30.Good result for not a great shot, to be honest.

:18:31. > :18:33.Good skipping there by Greg Drummond, to steer the object

:18:34. > :18:40.Now, these are the ones you don't want to be throwing every end

:18:41. > :18:56.They've got to make sure they get it fast.

:18:57. > :19:13.Some sweep there by Cannon not to get that to there.

:19:14. > :19:15.They've had a few of those today, really going

:19:16. > :19:21.Well, we see the resigned look on Bruce Mouat's face there.

:19:22. > :19:34.I think it may be three and a draw for four.

:19:35. > :19:36.I think if he makes this draw three in a measure,

:19:37. > :19:44.I wouldn't expect David Murdoch to miss an eight-foot draw for three.

:19:45. > :19:55.And he's met a little bit of comeuppance here so...

:19:56. > :19:57.Murdoch, anyway, needs to make this draw.

:19:58. > :20:05.I've got a feeling it looks like four.

:20:06. > :20:14.The super's indicating that it's all there.

:20:15. > :20:20.Well, think he's made that one comfortably.

:20:21. > :20:36.The umpire will come on and decide whether it's three or four.

:20:37. > :20:54.It's difficult to tell from here but certainly looks like yellow.

:20:55. > :21:00.Sets the lever down below so it deflect the dial a little bit.

:21:01. > :21:13.Well, it didn't deflect the needle at all so that

:21:14. > :21:15.meant it didn't touch it, so that's certainly yellow.

:21:16. > :21:33.Some good play from Murdoch, some aggressive, chancy play

:21:34. > :21:35.from Mouat not playing off, paying off, rather.

:21:36. > :21:46.Well, the crowd at the Dewars Centre here in Perth are loving this final.

:21:47. > :21:49.Plenty of action still to come, but let's take a brief hiatus

:21:50. > :21:54.and find out just exactly what makes these two skips tick.

:21:55. > :21:58.I'm David Murdoch, I'm the skip of Team Murdoch.

:21:59. > :22:05.My name is Bruce Mouat and I'm the skip for Team Mouat.

:22:06. > :22:07.Being in Perth for the Scottish Championships

:22:08. > :22:16.We're all quite young, we've just come out of juniors.

:22:17. > :22:18.Going to a world championships in Canada would be one

:22:19. > :22:21.of the biggest kind of achievements in our sport, really.

:22:22. > :22:23.It's going to be a real tough game against Bruce.

:22:24. > :22:26.You know, the Scottish final's always a lot of pressure,

:22:27. > :22:32.a lot at stake, and those guys have been doing well.

:22:33. > :22:38.The World University Games Championships recently.

:22:39. > :22:45.This is a new team that we formed this year.

:22:46. > :22:49.We're the University team so we went to the University games at the start

:22:50. > :22:52.of this month and we actually won the gold medal.

:22:53. > :22:54.It's three years since the Olympic Games.

:22:55. > :22:56.Sochi just, you know, it changed everything for our lives.

:22:57. > :22:58.Realising the dream of getting a medal.

:22:59. > :23:00.Just, you know, everyone noticing us down the street,

:23:01. > :23:02.down our local clubs, people being inspired by us,

:23:03. > :23:06.You know, so much interest in the sport.

:23:07. > :23:10.So when I tell other people I'm a curler,

:23:11. > :23:15.normally it's, is that, like, a full-time thing?

:23:16. > :23:18.Normally it's trying to explain to people that you do

:23:19. > :23:23.That opportunity to be at the Olympic Games stars here.

:23:24. > :23:26.We need to win this tournament, we need to go to the world

:23:27. > :23:29.Championships and do well, also gain points to get

:23:30. > :23:33.So still a lot of work to do, a lot of challenges ahead.

:23:34. > :23:35.A reminder that it's 6-2 to Murdoch as we rejoin

:23:36. > :23:39.COMMENTATOR: So a corner guard again here for Gregor Cannon.

:23:40. > :23:46.If you're going to be in there, you have to...

:23:47. > :24:39.They've got around about the 80s, 85, Logan, I would have thought,

:24:40. > :24:41.so that's what they'll be looking at this kind of standard

:24:42. > :24:51.And I think what we're seeing is that Team Mouat is making a few

:24:52. > :24:54.less shots along the way and probably falling a little

:24:55. > :24:56.bit lower than that, so around the 70% mark.

:24:57. > :24:59.Which is quite unusual for a third player.

:25:00. > :25:02.It's just the kind of style of game that skip Bruce Mouat has

:25:03. > :25:12.Trying to get this one right round behind.

:25:13. > :25:19.So they've got one at the front of house one

:25:20. > :25:24.Because there's no run back there, the way the two

:25:25. > :25:32.No chance one of them could go back onto that one.

:25:33. > :25:35.I'm sure the one in the front is reasonably well frozen.

:25:36. > :25:39.I'm sure Greg Drummond will throw a big weight here.

:25:40. > :25:42.Before they get rid of the red and at least one of the yellows.

:25:43. > :25:44.Might even see quite a few stones leaving the premises here.

:25:45. > :25:48.Only just got that one out the rings.

:25:49. > :25:52.I think they were a little bit more cute with that one

:25:53. > :26:01.If he takes the double he can lie two but he's going to set up

:26:02. > :26:04.a reasonably straightforward front to back double for Murdoch.

:26:05. > :26:11.Thinks it's too early to do that so we're going to really

:26:12. > :26:15.try to replace that red just picked off by Drummond.

:26:16. > :26:57.So quite a nice angle on those two stones at the front of the house

:26:58. > :27:02.Very much just leave a double takeout on the two yellows,

:27:03. > :27:15.which is something that they may well have to do later on.

:27:16. > :27:17.I'm not sure we're getting that out of there, actually.

:27:18. > :27:19.I'm not sure we're getting this going.

:27:20. > :27:46.Like, say you came there, not terrible.

:27:47. > :27:51.The good thing is this wee tap, tap, tap, this now aligns with this.

:27:52. > :28:09.Just trying to rearrange this a little bit.

:28:10. > :28:11.Obviously doesn't like it at the moment the way these two

:28:12. > :28:19.So he's going to play a tap of red, to yellow, to yellow,

:28:20. > :28:21.the back yellow one biting the button, which will hopefully

:28:22. > :28:25.leave the other red and yellow lined up on the red on the back.

:28:26. > :29:10.Deftly got enough weight here to move things around.

:29:11. > :29:12.I think that's pretty much exactly what they were looking for.

:29:13. > :29:15.That was well thought out, wasn't it?

:29:16. > :29:25.That big line of stones from the front there,

:29:26. > :29:27.yellow, red, yellow, the second yellow one goes

:29:28. > :29:31.on the red at the back of the four foot, or into the 8-foot, anyway.

:29:32. > :29:36.So Murdoch was trying to make sure that happened.

:29:37. > :29:48.Well, it's changed things round hugely,

:29:49. > :29:57.I think Mouat has to be careful now, obviously setting things up,

:29:58. > :30:01.trying to hope to get a multiple steal, but what he can't afford

:30:02. > :30:03.to do is give up more shots to Dave Murdoch.

:30:04. > :30:06.I think he's got to do something here, make sure he can at least

:30:07. > :30:11.They're definitely going to try to get some granite flying here.

:30:12. > :30:13.I quite liked the suggestion that Bobby Lammie had there,

:30:14. > :30:16.to just try and tap that stone that's in the short position.

:30:17. > :30:19.It's a more difficult shot but it may have had more reward, anyway.

:30:20. > :30:39.That was always going to happen, really.

:30:40. > :30:50.It could make it interesting to see if he does rush

:30:51. > :31:03.He can play a controlled weight, he can get a hit on it and roll over

:31:04. > :31:32.Even if he gets the nose hit, loses the back one...

:31:33. > :31:55.They couldn't have got that one any better.

:31:56. > :31:58.They've completely closed off the right-hand side of the house.

:31:59. > :32:08.Bruce Mouat's going to have to play a bit of an adventurous one here,

:32:09. > :32:24.He called Bobby Lammie to freeze the yellow stones there.

:32:25. > :32:27.It looked really good, but in fact, the shot that Murdoch played

:32:28. > :32:33.It might not do that again in similar circumstances.

:32:34. > :32:36.They are going to try to raise the red stone in the house

:32:37. > :32:39.That's the nominated shot, the one just next

:32:40. > :32:48.Looking for round about a half-stone contact here.

:32:49. > :32:51.Very high level of difficulty on this one, to get both the line

:32:52. > :33:03.We've seen it run a little bit straight over on this side at times.

:33:04. > :33:15.Five tariff shot, executed perfectly.

:33:16. > :33:18.The reward, unfortunately, is just a single point.

:33:19. > :33:23.Gives away the last stone, but reduces the deficit.

:33:24. > :33:31.So after four rounds, it is Murdoch six, Mouat, three.

:33:32. > :33:36.2016 World Junior Champion Bruce Mouat fighting back, then.

:33:37. > :33:40.5,000 miles away in South Korea, the 2017 edition of

:33:41. > :33:50.A Scotland team of skip Cameron Bryce, third,

:33:51. > :33:53.Robin Brydon, second Ewan Kyle, and lead Fraser Shaw made it

:33:54. > :33:56.But they ran out of steam against Norway, going down 3-10

:33:57. > :34:06.in just eight ends to miss out on a medal.

:34:07. > :34:09.Before we focus on the final stages of this match, let's have a look

:34:10. > :34:15.With four players in a team, each has an individual role.

:34:16. > :34:22.Let's find out about them from some of the Scottish curlers.

:34:23. > :34:30.And the lead plays the first two stones of the end.

:34:31. > :34:32.And that's basically, once you've decided your strategy,

:34:33. > :34:36.with your team, it's my job to set it up, to set up the structure

:34:37. > :34:39.for us to be able to execute that strategy.

:34:40. > :34:45.I played the third and fourth stones straight after the lead.

:34:46. > :34:48.They are now trying to produce some opportunities for you,

:34:49. > :34:52.get round the guards, set up a few shots.

:34:53. > :35:00.So they stand on the head while I'm throwing my stones as skip.

:35:01. > :35:03.I'm third, so I play the fifth and sixth stones of the end.

:35:04. > :35:07.I do sweeping as well for the lead and second stones and then,

:35:08. > :35:10.when the skip plays her stones, I go up and hold the brush.

:35:11. > :35:14.I'm actually between line calling, shot playing and sweeper.

:35:15. > :35:25.The skip has to be the guy that has a good day.

:35:26. > :35:27.If your skip isn't doing well, you're not winning the game.

:35:28. > :35:30.As skip, my role is to call the tactics in the game.

:35:31. > :35:33.I will throw the last two stones in the end,

:35:34. > :35:37.They usually either win you games or lose you games.

:35:38. > :35:40.I guess the last decision would come down to myself.

:35:41. > :35:45.If you make the shot then you've won the game,

:35:46. > :35:47.but if you miss that shot, you have lost.

:35:48. > :35:50.So it can be quite a lot of pressure, being a skip.

:35:51. > :36:04.It's the fifth end and Murdoch has a three shot advantage.

:36:05. > :36:08.Even at this early stage, Bruce Mouat and his team will be

:36:09. > :36:12.conscious that that they need to move these yellow stones

:36:13. > :36:16.a couple of times, really, to get into a shot scoring position.

:36:17. > :36:18.So, at least that's started to be a possibility.

:36:19. > :36:25.Couldn't have done much more, really.

:36:26. > :36:30.Now it's clean-up time, just with a single peel.

:36:31. > :36:32.Scott Andrews looking to remove the high one,

:36:33. > :36:43.So we're onto the second player's stones and the free guard zone rule

:36:44. > :36:49.The free guard zone rule really helps the team

:36:50. > :36:52.who are losing in the game, gives them a

:36:53. > :36:55.chance to come back in by allowing them to play into that white area

:36:56. > :37:00.And know that the opposition won't remove it

:37:01. > :37:17.Trying to make the guard here get it back again, got to

:37:18. > :37:34.Yes, we can see the one tighter to the rings, which is

:37:35. > :37:44.the one that is potentially hurting Team Murdoch.

:37:45. > :37:48.It's open so Scott Andrews is going to remove that one.

:37:49. > :37:50.Yes, Gregor being punished there really for not getting

:37:51. > :38:04.You won't see Scott Andrews miss too many

:38:05. > :38:19.They're going to draw around that stone just played with...

:38:20. > :38:22.Not too worried about guarding the stones

:38:23. > :38:27.It's a more usable guard for the skip stones.

:38:28. > :38:29.Yes, one tighter to the rings, takes a bit of

:38:30. > :38:51.Yes, trying to find a balance there really of hiding some of it

:38:52. > :38:53.but also keeping it close to the centre line

:38:54. > :39:15.Still need a miss here from Greg Drummond, though.

:39:16. > :39:20.Well, Mouat running out of stones here in this fifth end and

:39:21. > :39:24.lying two against, so just considering whether this is the time

:39:25. > :39:27.to make a move to try again to a shot position.

:39:28. > :39:33.What about nose at, like, barrier, and

:39:34. > :40:09.Going to spill this on the edge of aid. It is going to be a barrier

:40:10. > :40:15.weighed. Slightly down weight. Just have to get the nose of their own

:40:16. > :40:20.one and take one of the others out. Two reds in the ring. One of the

:40:21. > :40:30.others could spill. It stays in the rings, though. Probably didn't have

:40:31. > :40:34.too many other options, though. The other stones not lying in a great

:40:35. > :40:41.position. The important thing about the final result was to leave the

:40:42. > :40:51.two red stones sell with no real takeout possibility, and they

:40:52. > :40:56.managed to do that. OK, Greg Brom and will move the red and try to

:40:57. > :41:16.hold the shooter. The skip told him it would be fine. -- Greg Drummond.

:41:17. > :41:22.There are, there. High. Did very well, there. Missed the back one,

:41:23. > :41:31.just. Great shot from Greg Drummond. Perfect shot, really. Team Murdoch

:41:32. > :41:38.lying two here. This is how they did it. Just misses that one on the

:41:39. > :41:44.button and rolls into a really nice position. This is the difficulty

:41:45. > :41:50.with that guard being so long and not on the centre line, there is no

:41:51. > :41:59.real bailout draw for team Malik. -- team Mouat. Having to gamble to get

:42:00. > :42:05.stones in play. On the other side of the coin the yellows end up in the

:42:06. > :42:11.rings and they are looking at a two which would not be great for the

:42:12. > :42:16.cause of Team Mouat. Just going to try a little hit and roll, in front

:42:17. > :42:23.of the other? Trying to do something a little bit fancy, here. Going to

:42:24. > :42:27.try to pick the second shot Denly, and roll onto the three across the

:42:28. > :42:38.bottom. Very, very high difficulty shot. And the miss still leaves two

:42:39. > :42:40.yellows. You've got to think that Team Murdoch smell blood once again,

:42:41. > :42:52.here. Well, it can often happen when the

:42:53. > :42:56.team is down, having to take on a gamble, taking on these shots, and

:42:57. > :43:00.if you're just not firing perfectly, which is probably what you move into

:43:01. > :43:12.that trouble in the first place, not surprising they don't come off. --

:43:13. > :43:24.probably why you move. Anything but this. We can see he

:43:25. > :43:30.doesn't want to roll just a bit to the right, as we see it there, to be

:43:31. > :43:35.in front of his own first stone. Because that would give Bruce Mouat

:43:36. > :43:39.something to freeze up against and some cover. Would obviously like to

:43:40. > :43:46.keep this shooter in the rings. Towards his right. Keep three stones

:43:47. > :43:51.in play but leave the middle wide open. So Murdoch's first. In the

:43:52. > :44:19.fifth end. Not exactly where he was going for

:44:20. > :44:24.but they got away with it. Certainly lies three. What are they going to

:44:25. > :44:42.do with this? They are not lined up well from out

:44:43. > :44:45.here, are they, Logan? There's definitely an opportunity to remove

:44:46. > :44:51.all three. Hit the top run across the base of the one on the bottom,

:44:52. > :44:55.then they will quite easily get them all going. But this freeze is really

:44:56. > :45:01.their only opportunity to make a steel, which you feel even at this

:45:02. > :45:06.early stage might well be required. Having said that, the freeze goes

:45:07. > :45:07.wrong and they lose a three or a four, looking pretty bleak, isn't

:45:08. > :45:25.it? I guess they need to weigh up how

:45:26. > :45:28.much more difficult is that draw than the takeout, really. Probably

:45:29. > :45:39.more reward in the core. Slightly more difficult shot. A real key

:45:40. > :45:43.point in the match here, just going into half-time. And they know they

:45:44. > :45:50.can't really afford to fall any further behind. So it looks like

:45:51. > :45:58.they are giving it everything and the kitchen sink on this one. Where

:45:59. > :46:10.not even hearing that, we? Not really, no. We are not. Three

:46:11. > :46:19.losses, had to survive a tie-break previously. They won but the one

:46:20. > :46:26.against Brewster 6-4. So certainly taken a lot. But certainly need to

:46:27. > :46:42.make this one if they want to keep their hopes alive of taking Team

:46:43. > :46:51.Murdoch. Hard line! Long guard looks a bit of a nuisance but they will be

:46:52. > :47:05.too tight anyway. Ooh, just sneaks by. Has it got the running, though?

:47:06. > :47:13.He's in for second shot. A good bit of sweeping to get it that far. A

:47:14. > :47:21.passer-by absolutely nothing and then swept it really well to get it

:47:22. > :47:26.in for second shot. It does look like quite a straightforward shot to

:47:27. > :47:30.school three here, but now that long guard is in a bit of an annoying

:47:31. > :47:34.position for David Murdoch. Should be able to peel it out quite easily

:47:35. > :47:40.but they do need to give it a bit of extra attention. The danger is the

:47:41. > :47:45.straight jam. That could give them one, which clearly doesn't want to

:47:46. > :47:50.do, so he looks like he's going to actually play it off his own. Take

:47:51. > :47:57.his own yellow hearthstone. Might end up only getting a two but gives

:47:58. > :48:06.him a good buffer to extend the lead from three to five. A bit of a

:48:07. > :48:10.veteran call here! I think so. He's probably seen it all before and

:48:11. > :48:14.thinks, no problem. Not even going to take the chance of that

:48:15. > :48:19.happening. Knows the scoreboard, knows where he is, knows what he has

:48:20. > :48:27.to do. And he's going to keep the other one as well.

:48:28. > :48:29.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE So Team Mouat have to gamble a

:48:30. > :48:37.little bit. Not making all the shots. Another three go on the board

:48:38. > :48:43.and that lead is getting pretty large. Fifth end break coming up and

:48:44. > :48:47.it's 9-3. When they came back after the break,

:48:48. > :48:52.Mouat struggled to turn things around. He blanked the sixth end to

:48:53. > :48:56.keep the hammer, and in the seventh, he could only claim a one. So

:48:57. > :49:09.moderate clip by five going into the eighth and we pick up again with

:49:10. > :49:17.Drummond's second stone. -- so Murdoch leads by five.

:49:18. > :49:27.COMMENTATOR: They wanted list top of the T line. Not even going to be

:49:28. > :50:01.shot. All of a sudden a bit more interest here for Team Mouat.

:50:02. > :50:12.Still fully focused on the job in hand despite this large lead David

:50:13. > :50:17.Murdoch has. Can Bruce Mouat get a good one here in the rings, get it

:50:18. > :50:26.covered? Struggled a bit withdraw weight in this game. Started off

:50:27. > :50:33.magnificently. -- struggled with draw weight. Since then, been a bit

:50:34. > :50:43.awry with these. This is coming deep as well. It's going to be second

:50:44. > :50:54.shot, though. Give them room for another one. When David Murdoch

:50:55. > :50:59.misses this one, you mean? Or they hit and roll of it! So, Murdoch

:51:00. > :51:21.facing two. So just three to come here in this

:51:22. > :51:29.eighth end. Two for Murdoch and one for Bruce Mouat.

:51:30. > :51:51.Line's good! Still good! Line's good! Hard! Hard! Not sure if it's

:51:52. > :51:56.past the front one. I think it is. Just rubbed it. Just about gets to

:51:57. > :52:08.where he was aiming for, mind you. Really nice shot. Kills two of those

:52:09. > :52:18.red stones in there and just one to come from Bruce Mouat. So Greg

:52:19. > :52:28.Drummond giving that once somebody English as it went by! Pretty much

:52:29. > :52:38.find the perfect spot in the end. So that game plan for Bruce Mouat of

:52:39. > :52:45.making Team Murdoch face them and it will just be a follow it down job

:52:46. > :52:51.here. A lot of weight and a lot of line on this one. Heavy with his

:52:52. > :53:00.first one and even heavier with this one. So you have to say is a poor

:53:01. > :53:12.shot from Mouat. Well, Murdoch lies one. Got to get it effort, even to

:53:13. > :53:24.spare two. The fat lady may well be about to sing here. She's warming

:53:25. > :53:29.up, that's for sure. Well, they've already achieved their object for

:53:30. > :53:37.the end. You think that would be enough to seal the deal for Team

:53:38. > :53:41.Murdoch to become the 2017 Scottish champions and the representative

:53:42. > :53:50.team for Scotland at the world Championships in Edmonton in April.

:53:51. > :53:56.So, final stone of the eighth end for David Murdoch. Looking pretty

:53:57. > :54:17.happy with it. So is it going to be one or two?

:54:18. > :54:22.Just the one. And the offer of a handshake from Bruce Mouat and team.

:54:23. > :54:25.And a smile on David Murdoch's face. And why not? We have our champions.

:54:26. > :54:30.The men's curling champions 2017. David Murdoch, Greg Drummond, Scott

:54:31. > :54:33.Andrews and Michael Goodfellow. And of course their

:54:34. > :54:34.coach, Ian Tetley. A thoroughly professional

:54:35. > :54:41.and workmanlike performance. Experience prevailing over

:54:42. > :54:44.the youth of Bruce Mouat. David, first Scottish

:54:45. > :54:52.title since 2013. And clearly, you are very,

:54:53. > :54:56.very happy about it. There's so many good

:54:57. > :55:04.teams in this event. And it's a marquee event

:55:05. > :55:07.for Scottish curling, and there's a lot at stake this

:55:08. > :55:10.year, and I'm so proud of the guys. They've just put in so much hard

:55:11. > :55:13.work leading up to this. Greg, give us a sense of just how

:55:14. > :55:18.much work you actually did put in, because this is such an important

:55:19. > :55:21.one for you to get back Yeah, the last couple

:55:22. > :55:24.of years, we've had a tough So it was a challenge for us to put

:55:25. > :55:30.the work in and get that little bit better in order to come here and try

:55:31. > :55:33.and win this week. Also, this young team

:55:34. > :55:35.you are playing against, the world University champions,

:55:36. > :55:37.are coming into this competition in great form,

:55:38. > :55:39.and lots of confidence, as well. You had to get into this game and do

:55:40. > :55:43.well, right from the start. Yeah, we knew that Bruce

:55:44. > :55:46.and the boys were going to come out of the blocks firing,

:55:47. > :55:48.they came through the tie-breaker. They beat the defending champion,

:55:49. > :55:50.Tom, they beat Kyle Smith. As you say, they are the World

:55:51. > :55:53.University Games champions. They are going to be

:55:54. > :55:56.at our toes for the next couple And, Michael, such a good thing

:55:57. > :56:05.to see you guys back here. And the big hug you were giving

:56:06. > :56:07.each other at the end, That was a lot of tension

:56:08. > :56:11.being released there, I reckon. We've had an up-and-down season,

:56:12. > :56:16.an up and down last couple of years, since the Olympics, so it really

:56:17. > :56:19.meant a lot to get back in the World Championship

:56:20. > :56:20.and represent Scotland, David, let's talk

:56:21. > :56:23.about the Olympics. You had that silver medal,

:56:24. > :56:26.of course, and you haven't So you're now going back,

:56:27. > :56:30.you are going to go to Canada and you are going to be flying

:56:31. > :56:33.the Saltire as well. There's no better place than playing

:56:34. > :56:37.in front of a Canadian crowd. Huge crowds, super exciting,

:56:38. > :56:40.and an opportunity for us. We have high expectations

:56:41. > :56:42.and we want to continue our form going

:56:43. > :56:44.into the World Championships. Congratulations, Scottish

:56:45. > :56:49.champions 2017, Team Murdoch! You came into this in great

:56:50. > :56:59.form, but they were in And they punished our

:57:00. > :57:07.mistakes, for sure. But, yeah, I'm really

:57:08. > :57:15.proud of my team. They've played awesome all week and,

:57:16. > :57:18.yeah, I'm happy to be in the final, Great to be in the final,

:57:19. > :57:26.but I guess an uphill battle for You lost a four in the third end

:57:27. > :57:30.and, after that, it's just so Yeah, especially

:57:31. > :57:33.against a team like that. You have to be on point just

:57:34. > :57:36.to get two back in that. So we tried really hard to get

:57:37. > :57:39.the two, but they just What will you take

:57:40. > :57:43.from this final, and the fact that you managed to have such

:57:44. > :57:46.a lot of success this week? We've all really focused

:57:47. > :57:49.on getting this far and So it's just proved

:57:50. > :57:54.that we can dance with So it was experience

:57:55. > :58:01.which overcame youth. And a first taste of victory

:58:02. > :58:06.for these men in their national That was the year before

:58:07. > :58:10.they went on to take So, it's Team Murdoch who will be
