0:00:20 > 0:00:25Welcome to the 2013 ARR Craib Scottish Rally Championship.

0:00:25 > 0:00:29The season began in February with the Arnold Clark Snowman Rally

0:00:29 > 0:00:31in the forests around Inverness.

0:00:31 > 0:00:34But that was abandoned after the tragic death

0:00:34 > 0:00:36of a spectator on stage one.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38It's a rare occurrence in rallying,

0:00:38 > 0:00:40but reminds everyone that it is a dangerous sport

0:00:40 > 0:00:45and the safety of fans, drivers and crews is of the highest importance.

0:00:45 > 0:00:48Organisers, competitors and spectators agreed

0:00:48 > 0:00:51that rallying was unimportant compared to what had happened

0:00:51 > 0:00:53so the Highland event was called off.

0:00:55 > 0:00:58That meant the first round of the 2013 calendar

0:00:58 > 0:01:01was the Brick and Steel Border Counties Rally in Jedburgh.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06Although most of the usual suspects would be competing,

0:01:06 > 0:01:09there had been one major change since last season.

0:01:10 > 0:01:14Sensing his title might be under threat from a number of quarters,

0:01:14 > 0:01:18four-time defending champion David Bogie had thrown down the gauntlet

0:01:18 > 0:01:23and moved up from his trusty Evo IX to a Ford Focus World Rally Car.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26I don't think it'll be the fastest driver that'll win today.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29I think it's a case of keeping it on the road

0:01:29 > 0:01:30and keeping out of trouble

0:01:30 > 0:01:32and the result at the end could be a very strange result.

0:01:32 > 0:01:35But, of course, with the previous round being cancelled

0:01:35 > 0:01:37we're still in the first round of the championship

0:01:37 > 0:01:39so I would be more than happy with a podium.

0:01:39 > 0:01:43Perennial runner-up Mike Faulkner had also traded in

0:01:43 > 0:01:45his Evo VI for a more powerful Evo IX.

0:01:45 > 0:01:47A little bit more anxious than normal,

0:01:47 > 0:01:49obviously we've not had any running in the car.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51We had a problem with the engine again,

0:01:51 > 0:01:53we tried to get a few miles a week ago,

0:01:53 > 0:01:56and had a problem with the engine so we've not really done any miles,

0:01:56 > 0:01:59and it's not the ideal conditions to be learning a new car,

0:01:59 > 0:02:01but we'll give it a go.

0:02:01 > 0:02:05In the Scottish Rally Championship, drivers get 30 points for a victory,

0:02:05 > 0:02:0828 for second, 27 for third,

0:02:08 > 0:02:1326 for fourth and so on down to one point for finishing 29th.

0:02:14 > 0:02:18The Brick and Steel would prove to be a supreme test of ability.

0:02:18 > 0:02:22Snow and ice had made conditions in the stages very unpredictable.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24I really like the snow. You can push on the snow,

0:02:24 > 0:02:28but snow tyres are easily punctured so you need a decent amount of snow.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30I don't think there's quite enough for that,

0:02:30 > 0:02:32so you've got to take the gamble.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35In the mixed surfaces, you could get lots of late braking in on snow

0:02:35 > 0:02:38and then you get an icy patch downhill, just carry you straight on

0:02:38 > 0:02:41into the trees so it's reading the road the best you can

0:02:41 > 0:02:44and softly, softly whilst going as quick you can.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47Picking the right tyres could be the difference between winning

0:02:47 > 0:02:49and losing.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51And the conditions were affecting the confidence

0:02:51 > 0:02:53of even the best in the field.

0:02:53 > 0:02:56As you can see, its more ice than snow so you're not going

0:02:56 > 0:02:58to get a tyre working on ice so we'll just have to take it easy.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00I'm not looking forward to it.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02It's iced over today and its marbled over,

0:03:02 > 0:03:06so it's looking for a bit of grip, but we'll see what happens.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08We're on a snow tyre.

0:03:08 > 0:03:10I think Euan behind us there is on a gravel tyre.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13In all honesty, I don't know what the right tyre decision

0:03:13 > 0:03:15will be for this, but I'm sure the time will tell.

0:03:15 > 0:03:21The weather had made safety the most important consideration for event organisers.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24So they put the four-wheel drive cars in first,

0:03:24 > 0:03:27to make it easier for the smaller engined vehicles

0:03:27 > 0:03:30to get through the stages.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50Quintin Milne, who'd won the final round of the 2012 season in Perthshire,

0:03:50 > 0:03:52didn't get off to the best of starts...

0:03:57 > 0:04:01..only managing 17th position after a spin on the opening Hyndlee stage.

0:04:06 > 0:04:11But a few of the other pre-rally favourites put in encouraging performances.

0:04:11 > 0:04:15Barry Groundwater and Neil Shanks in their Evo IX

0:04:15 > 0:04:18were fifth quickest of the SRC registered crews.

0:04:18 > 0:04:23They were only one second slower than David Bogie and Kevin Rae in their new WRC.

0:04:25 > 0:04:29Lack of seat-time in their Evo IX didn't seem to have slowed down

0:04:29 > 0:04:34Mike Faulkner and Peter Foy, who were third quickest through Hyndlee.

0:04:34 > 0:04:36There was a very impressive performance

0:04:36 > 0:04:39from Duns' Dale Robertson and Paul McGuire

0:04:39 > 0:04:41coming in second on the stage.

0:04:44 > 0:04:47But leading the standings with a stellar drive through

0:04:47 > 0:04:52the snow and ice were Euan Thorburn and Paul Beaton in their Focus WRC.

0:04:54 > 0:04:58Maybe this was their chance to emerge from the shadow of Bogie and Rae.

0:04:58 > 0:05:02Jock Armstrong and Kirsty Riddick were an early casualty,

0:05:02 > 0:05:05going off the road in their Subaru Impreza.

0:05:05 > 0:05:07Keep left over crest.

0:05:09 > 0:05:14Stage two, Wauchope, was defining for three of the leading contenders.

0:05:14 > 0:05:19Euan Thorburn lost time after a spin and slipped down to eighth overall.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21First one, we had a fairly good run.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24There wasn't much grip, but you could feel for it.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27Second one was much the same until we had a spin

0:05:27 > 0:05:30maybe halfway through, just a second gear left hand corner,

0:05:30 > 0:05:33just got the power a bit too early and it just half spun in the middle

0:05:33 > 0:05:36of the road, but I couldn't get reverse so it cost us a lot of time.

0:05:36 > 0:05:37I think we dropped a minute and a half.

0:05:37 > 0:05:41But it was a different story for Barry Groundwater.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44He was 46 seconds quicker than Dale Robertson

0:05:44 > 0:05:47and took a deserved lead in the event,

0:05:47 > 0:05:50while Robertson had slipped down to third place.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52I thought my times weren't all that great.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55second stage was quite good, but certainly first one we were

0:05:55 > 0:05:59really on and off but, ah, happy to still be here so far anyway.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03Very, very slippy, you're just a passenger sometimes.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06I would say we set a good time in the first stage,

0:06:06 > 0:06:08we've taken it really steady cos we got a big scare in the end

0:06:08 > 0:06:11of the first stage, so we taken it really steady in stage two, there.

0:06:11 > 0:06:14We lost a wee bit of time, but we'll have a push again later on.

0:06:14 > 0:06:17Wauchope was really all about Quintin Milne.

0:06:17 > 0:06:21He scorched through the stage an astonishing 27 seconds faster

0:06:21 > 0:06:23than Barry Groundwater.

0:06:23 > 0:06:26That elevated him 15 places into second overall,

0:06:26 > 0:06:30just nine seconds adrift of the Stonehaven driver.

0:06:30 > 0:06:31I felt like a passenger on one,

0:06:31 > 0:06:34and I spun it and had a couple of moments.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37I was really not getting any feel for the car, the car was sliding out

0:06:37 > 0:06:40but on stage two the snow tyres were really working and biting in.

0:06:40 > 0:06:45And I pushed hard, I felt like I was on gravel. So, yeah...

0:06:45 > 0:06:48It felt light in there and at times I've shown that.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52And what of the defending champion?

0:06:52 > 0:06:55David Bogie was lying fourth after two stages

0:06:55 > 0:06:58and blamed himself for his position.

0:06:58 > 0:06:59Very difficult.

0:06:59 > 0:07:01We went in to the first stage on a snow tyre

0:07:01 > 0:07:03and there was no snow at all, it was just ice.

0:07:03 > 0:07:07So, right from the first corner, we could tell we were on the wrong tyre choice.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10It's a difficult decision to make, you're either right or wrong,

0:07:10 > 0:07:11and in that case we were wrong.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13We got on to a gravel tyre for the second stage,

0:07:13 > 0:07:17but clearing the lines, clearing the snow banks out of the way,

0:07:17 > 0:07:18just struggling a bit.

0:07:18 > 0:07:22But, as I say, I don't think it'll be the fastest driver who'll win today,

0:07:22 > 0:07:25but it's just a case of getting to the end and we'll be happy.

0:07:25 > 0:07:29Deep snow drifts in Craik forced the organisers to cancel stage three,

0:07:29 > 0:07:32giving crews extra time in the service area.

0:08:00 > 0:08:04On stage four, Bewshaugh in Kielder Forest,

0:08:04 > 0:08:06Milne again posted the fastest time

0:08:06 > 0:08:09to take him into the overall lead.

0:08:09 > 0:08:11Braking now, protect the side wall,

0:08:11 > 0:08:14and then caution, press the second left seven,

0:08:14 > 0:08:18David Bogie was second quickest and moved into second spot.

0:08:20 > 0:08:24And although Barry Groundwater was also experiencing tyre problems,

0:08:24 > 0:08:28his time kept him in with a shout of a podium place,

0:08:28 > 0:08:33third, a minute and one second behind Milne.

0:08:33 > 0:08:36Donnie MacDonald and Andrew Falconer from Inverness were making

0:08:36 > 0:08:39a late charge up the standings and were lying fourth.

0:08:41 > 0:08:44Mike Faulkner and Peter Foy in their new Evo IX

0:08:44 > 0:08:48had suffered a puncture earlier and had slid down to fifth.

0:08:50 > 0:08:54But they were a minute and a half down on third-placed Groundwater

0:08:54 > 0:08:58and they were really left fighting for minor positions.

0:09:00 > 0:09:04The final stage, Riccarton, was all about whether Milne

0:09:04 > 0:09:07could keep his nerve and take the first victory of the 2013 season.

0:09:10 > 0:09:13He could and he did, coming in six seconds faster

0:09:13 > 0:09:17than the hard-charging Barry Groundwater, who'd put his tyre woes

0:09:17 > 0:09:21behind him to record a very impressive second position.

0:09:21 > 0:09:24But there had been some hairy moments for the Banchory ace.

0:09:24 > 0:09:28Went clean through after flat out crests in fifth gear,

0:09:28 > 0:09:30clean through into some ditches.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32There was one moment we took out a couple of camera pods.

0:09:32 > 0:09:34Fortunately I didn't damage the guy's camera,

0:09:34 > 0:09:37but he's got some good footage, we were bouncing into ditches.

0:09:37 > 0:09:39But you need a bit of luck sometimes and it held today

0:09:39 > 0:09:41and I'm grateful of that.

0:09:41 > 0:09:44When we came out of service and I saw tyre marks going up the side

0:09:44 > 0:09:47of banks and ditches where Quintin had been,

0:09:47 > 0:09:50I knew he was pushing hard. That was the difference.

0:09:50 > 0:09:54I wanted to get to finish, I wasn't taking the risks that he was.

0:09:54 > 0:09:56He was, fair play to him, he was doing very well today,

0:09:56 > 0:09:59but he was driving the doors off that car today.

0:10:00 > 0:10:04David Bogie had been quietly going about his business

0:10:04 > 0:10:06without setting the heather on fire.

0:10:07 > 0:10:09Wrong tyre choice early on had set him back,

0:10:09 > 0:10:14but surefooted drives in the final two stages had moved him into third.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17Very happy just to get to the end of this rally, the conditions

0:10:17 > 0:10:21are probably the most difficult conditions I've ever driven in.

0:10:21 > 0:10:24Just happy to get to the end, no damage, happy.

0:10:24 > 0:10:28Event sponsor John McClory, with David Hood on the notes,

0:10:28 > 0:10:32took top Group N class honours in his Subaru Impreza.

0:10:33 > 0:10:35Cousins Kieran Renton and Carin Logan

0:10:35 > 0:10:38won class four in a Ford Fiesta R2.

0:10:58 > 0:11:01A normally challenging event was made much more so

0:11:01 > 0:11:02by the weather conditions.

0:11:02 > 0:11:05There couldn't be snow and ice at the next round,

0:11:05 > 0:11:08the Granite City in Aberdeen? Could there?

0:11:10 > 0:11:14As it turned out, the snow and ice in Aberdeenshire had melted

0:11:14 > 0:11:17in the week or so leading up to the Coltel Granite City rally.

0:11:17 > 0:11:22But that meant the drivers were still unsure how the stages would perform.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25We had the test day on Thursday,

0:11:25 > 0:11:27but it didn't use parts of the stage we were using in the rally,

0:11:27 > 0:11:30but it was fairly good, it was fairly soft under the trees.

0:11:30 > 0:11:33But most of the stages are quite exposed so the wind and the sun

0:11:33 > 0:11:35has got to them and dried them out a fair bit,

0:11:35 > 0:11:38but we'll just have to watch under the trees where the snow has been

0:11:38 > 0:11:41and it has melted and made it soft, but it'll be the same for everyone

0:11:41 > 0:11:43so looking forward to it.

0:11:43 > 0:11:45I'm just glad that the Border Counties is out the way

0:11:45 > 0:11:48and we can start looking forward. We aren't going to have the same conditions.

0:11:48 > 0:11:51It might be slippy in places, but I think, on the whole,

0:11:51 > 0:11:54stages will be very good and I think it'll lead to a good clean fight

0:11:54 > 0:11:57and hopefully it's the quickest driver who wins today.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59After his non-finish in Jedburgh, Jock Armstrong had taken

0:11:59 > 0:12:02some extra steps to improve his performance.

0:12:02 > 0:12:06So we've cut the tyre just to see if it'll help the grip in the back,

0:12:06 > 0:12:10and see if it'll steer itself round the corner a bit easier.

0:12:10 > 0:12:14We're willing to try anything today, not saying I'm grabbing at straws,

0:12:14 > 0:12:17but its one of these scenarios where you're thinking,

0:12:17 > 0:12:21"If it helps, it helps," and that's what it's all about so look out.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24Quintin Milne's cavalier win in Jedburgh has forced many people

0:12:24 > 0:12:28to take him seriously as a title contender this season,

0:12:28 > 0:12:31although some have suggested curbing his swashbuckling style.

0:12:31 > 0:12:34A load of folk have tried to give me advice to do that,

0:12:34 > 0:12:36but I'm a firm believer in fortune favours the brave.

0:12:36 > 0:12:39It doesn't always work out for you, but when you're up against machines

0:12:39 > 0:12:42with launch control and stuff like that, you've got to go for it.

0:12:42 > 0:12:45It's my home rally so if there's any one I don't mind bending it

0:12:45 > 0:12:49on up at the front end of the field this is it. Not that I want to bend it, of course!

0:12:49 > 0:12:52Mike Faulkner had his problems at the Border Counties

0:12:52 > 0:12:56and there was another hitch at Aberdeen before he even got to the start line.

0:12:56 > 0:12:59Main shaft in the gear box broke and spat all the bits out

0:12:59 > 0:13:03the side of the casing so at one point we thought it was job over.

0:13:03 > 0:13:06I got a call, I think it was on Thursday night quite late

0:13:06 > 0:13:09saying that one of the cars, after trials, had broken parts

0:13:09 > 0:13:12and had to get some parts urgently from Preston overnight

0:13:12 > 0:13:14on Thursday, get them going again. He's sitting waiting to go today.

0:13:14 > 0:13:17Barry Groundwater lent us his shed

0:13:17 > 0:13:19and Wayne managed to locate the bits for us and get them

0:13:19 > 0:13:21across to his dad who took them out to the motorway

0:13:21 > 0:13:23and met an ARR Craib night truck coming up the road,

0:13:23 > 0:13:25dropped them off at Dave Weston's

0:13:25 > 0:13:28and Dave got them to us for nine o'clock in the morning yesterday

0:13:28 > 0:13:31and Wayne built the box, we put it in in the afternoon,

0:13:31 > 0:13:32and made scrutineering.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34So we're here to fight another day.

0:14:00 > 0:14:04Faulkner and Foy didn't get the start they were looking for.

0:14:04 > 0:14:06A spin in the middle of stage one, Fetteresso,

0:14:06 > 0:14:10lost them around 20 seconds and put them into ninth spot.

0:14:13 > 0:14:15Into reverse, into reverse.

0:14:17 > 0:14:21Local drivers were taking advantage of their knowledge.

0:14:21 > 0:14:25Barry Groundwater from Stonehaven was lying eighth after the first test,

0:14:25 > 0:14:27tied with Banchory's Bruce McCombie.

0:14:27 > 0:14:30Very good stage there, really fast going.

0:14:30 > 0:14:34I had a few moments, especially at the very last corner there,

0:14:34 > 0:14:36it's very deceptive, but it's been OK.

0:14:39 > 0:14:44Portlethen's Chris Collie driving an elderly Evo VI and Dave Weston Jr

0:14:44 > 0:14:49from Aberdeen in an unfamiliar Evo IX were a further three seconds ahead.

0:14:53 > 0:14:56Donnie Macdonald had recovered from a close call with a bridge

0:14:56 > 0:14:59in the opening stage to stay in contention in fourth.

0:15:06 > 0:15:09Quintin Milne from Banchory with Martin Forrest on the notes

0:15:09 > 0:15:14was consolidating his win in Jedburgh. He was third overall.

0:15:16 > 0:15:18I was giving it everything she's got there

0:15:18 > 0:15:20and half of this stage is familiar for me,

0:15:20 > 0:15:22I used to go through it on my bikes years ago.

0:15:22 > 0:15:25I couldn't have gone harder in there but, uphill, world cars have got it on me,

0:15:25 > 0:15:27but it's a long day and we've got a couple of stages

0:15:27 > 0:15:30where we hope to risk some high speed stuff where we may

0:15:30 > 0:15:32have a bit of an advantage so keep in there. Cheers!

0:15:34 > 0:15:36But a real battle was developing at the top

0:15:36 > 0:15:40with Jock Armstrong and Kirsty Riddick in second spot.

0:15:43 > 0:15:46I nearly ended the rally.

0:15:46 > 0:15:48We came to a... We had a lot of grip in the back

0:15:48 > 0:15:50and we came to a left two, left three corner

0:15:50 > 0:15:52and thought we're going to have to straight line it,

0:15:52 > 0:15:55but luckily there's a right two so we just went right down

0:15:55 > 0:15:58into deep ditch and carried us nice, it hooked it and that's where

0:15:58 > 0:16:01- we'd won the rally nearly. - That's where you nearly lost it!

0:16:01 > 0:16:03Definitely, nearly lost it as well!

0:16:03 > 0:16:07Armstrong was just five seconds behind David Bogie and Kevin Rae

0:16:07 > 0:16:09who seemed to be getting to grips

0:16:09 > 0:16:12with their new Ford Focus World Rally Car.

0:16:19 > 0:16:22An early casualty was Duns' Euan Thorburn,

0:16:22 > 0:16:24one of Bogie's main rivals.

0:16:24 > 0:16:28- Euan, do you know what's happened? - No power.

0:16:28 > 0:16:30Halfway through the stage the power just went.

0:16:30 > 0:16:31Don't know what it is.

0:16:36 > 0:16:39Turned out Euan had hit a rock which had flattened

0:16:39 > 0:16:42the exhaust on his Ford Focus World Rally Car.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45Game over for him and co-driver Paul Beaton.

0:16:52 > 0:16:56Bogie and Armstrong traded times in stages two and three.

0:16:58 > 0:16:59The Castle Douglas man

0:16:59 > 0:17:03took three seconds out of the two-time Granite City winner

0:17:03 > 0:17:04to reduce the deficit at the top

0:17:04 > 0:17:07to just three seconds after Drumtochty.

0:17:08 > 0:17:11But in stage three, Glenfarquhar, Bogie hit back

0:17:11 > 0:17:14and increased his lead at the top over Armstrong to 12 seconds.

0:17:21 > 0:17:24Quintin Milne was hanging on in third.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27But his position was under increasing threat

0:17:27 > 0:17:30from a sure-footed Chris Collie with Lisa Watson navigating.

0:17:32 > 0:17:34Long right one.

0:17:34 > 0:17:37He was gradually eating away at his opponent

0:17:37 > 0:17:40and after the third stage he was only six seconds adrift.

0:17:42 > 0:17:46Over the past, my rallies, I've got quicker in the afternoon,

0:17:46 > 0:17:48just get a few stages under the belt.

0:17:48 > 0:17:50So, get the car up to service, have a look,

0:17:50 > 0:17:53see what condition the tyres are in and I think I fancy a wee push

0:17:53 > 0:17:56if there's only six seconds in it.

0:17:56 > 0:17:59After his solid start, Donnie MacDonald had slipped to fifth.

0:18:04 > 0:18:06I can't believe we're still fifth, honestly.

0:18:06 > 0:18:08So what's your plan for the rest of the afternoon?

0:18:08 > 0:18:11Just try and get that 15 seconds back for third place,

0:18:11 > 0:18:12in all honesty it's there.

0:18:12 > 0:18:14The podium's there for a lot of boys, not just me, but honestly

0:18:14 > 0:18:17I'm only interested in myself so just try and get that podium back.

0:18:17 > 0:18:22The Invernesian was destined to finish the event in sixth place,

0:18:22 > 0:18:26but Mike Faulkner was putting his first stage woes behind him

0:18:26 > 0:18:28and had climbed from ninth position into sixth.

0:18:30 > 0:18:35Going into the service halt in Aberdeen, it was getting very tight.

0:18:35 > 0:18:38Bogie held a 12 second lead from Armstrong.

0:18:38 > 0:18:40You're always greedy for the win aren't you?

0:18:40 > 0:18:41We'll put him under a bit of pressure,

0:18:41 > 0:18:45give him some psychological warfare as they say and get on with it.

0:18:45 > 0:18:47Jock's a very good driver

0:18:47 > 0:18:50so to lose two seconds in a stage is fine with me.

0:18:50 > 0:18:53We had a pretty good run through stage three,

0:18:53 > 0:18:56some of the notes just didn't come together very well but, as I say,

0:18:56 > 0:19:00the more rallying you do, the more you expect everything to be perfect

0:19:00 > 0:19:03and it's not just there yet, but happy and feel comfortable.

0:19:03 > 0:19:07Only 25 seconds separated Quintin Milne in third

0:19:07 > 0:19:10from Barry Groundwater in ninth place.

0:19:10 > 0:19:13The only thing we can do is push harder and see if we can get away

0:19:13 > 0:19:17with it, but really, it's so quick, there's no error for mistakes.

0:19:17 > 0:19:20I thought we were pushing well in the morning,

0:19:20 > 0:19:22but certainly we need to do a bit more.

0:19:39 > 0:19:41What was shaping up to be a close-fought battle

0:19:41 > 0:19:45at the front between the two south-west of Scotland competitors

0:19:45 > 0:19:47came to an abrupt end.

0:19:47 > 0:19:50- There's something wrong. - I know there is.

0:19:50 > 0:19:52Left four, 100.

0:19:52 > 0:19:56- Right eight, what is it?- It's a turbo blue or something, Kirsty.

0:19:56 > 0:20:00- End of. We're out.- Aww, Jock. - We blew it.

0:20:00 > 0:20:03A mile into stage four, Durris,

0:20:03 > 0:20:07the engine of Armstrong's Impreza blew up and split in two.

0:20:07 > 0:20:09I'll switch the engine off, the oil light's come on.

0:20:09 > 0:20:10Something's blown up.

0:20:12 > 0:20:14Bogie, though, went from strength to strength,

0:20:14 > 0:20:17won the stage and stretched his lead over Milne

0:20:17 > 0:20:22who'd climbed into second position by virtue of Armstrong's retirement.

0:20:24 > 0:20:29Chris Collie made up the top three with another competitive performance through Durris.

0:20:31 > 0:20:35But it was on stage five, Swanley, at 12 miles the longest in the event,

0:20:35 > 0:20:39that the most dramatic manoeuvrings took place.

0:20:39 > 0:20:42Milne, who'd begun the test in second,

0:20:42 > 0:20:45crumbled and he dropped down the order to finish fourth.

0:20:47 > 0:20:50An inspired drive by Mike Faulkner propelled him

0:20:50 > 0:20:54into third position, a result he'd have bitten your hand off for

0:20:54 > 0:20:57given his pre-event gearbox problems.

0:20:59 > 0:21:03And what a performance from Chris Collie in his home event.

0:21:03 > 0:21:07He and navigator Lisa Watson held off Faulkner's challenge

0:21:07 > 0:21:10and claimed their first ever SRC podium place.

0:21:10 > 0:21:12Still coming to terms with it, to be honest.

0:21:12 > 0:21:14It's a day when it's all went well for me,

0:21:14 > 0:21:17rode our luck a couple of times in some of the stages,

0:21:17 > 0:21:19lost a little bit of time in the last two stages as well

0:21:19 > 0:21:23with some wide moves on the corners and stuff.

0:21:23 > 0:21:26I thought I might have dropped down a couple of places,

0:21:26 > 0:21:28cos I knew it was so tight,

0:21:28 > 0:21:31so to find out we were second is unbelievable.

0:21:31 > 0:21:35There was no doubt about the winners of the 2013 Granite City Rally.

0:21:35 > 0:21:38David Bogie and Kevin Rae were fastest through Swanley

0:21:38 > 0:21:43and came in almost a minute and a half ahead of the rest of the field.

0:21:43 > 0:21:46It was made easier, obviously, with Euan's retirement

0:21:46 > 0:21:49today in the first stage and Jock's retirement towards the end.

0:21:49 > 0:21:51That's not what we like to see, we'd rather we were all there

0:21:51 > 0:21:53battling and the fastest man winning.

0:21:53 > 0:21:55So, we'll go to the Jim Clark,

0:21:55 > 0:21:58hopefully we'll all get a good clean run and let the fastest man win.

0:21:58 > 0:22:02It's early days in the 2013 ARR Craib Scottish Rally Championship,

0:22:02 > 0:22:06but after two events, defending champion David Bogie

0:22:06 > 0:22:08has a slender lead over Quintin Milne.

0:22:10 > 0:22:14Group N honours went to Wigtownshire duo Fraser Wilson and Steven Broll

0:22:14 > 0:22:18who limped home after driving the last nine miles of the final stage

0:22:18 > 0:22:23with no exhaust, power steering, water pump or alternator.

0:22:25 > 0:22:28And Glasgow's Grant Inglis and Robert Gray

0:22:28 > 0:22:31were winners of the 1600 class in a Honda Civic,

0:22:31 > 0:22:34finishing 20 seconds ahead of their rivals.

0:23:04 > 0:23:07The Jim Clark Reivers event is always one of the stiffest tests

0:23:07 > 0:23:10in the Scottish Rally Championship calendar.

0:23:10 > 0:23:12It's also the only contest in the series

0:23:12 > 0:23:14where public roads are closed.

0:23:19 > 0:23:22The SRC drivers aren't used to rallying on tarmac

0:23:22 > 0:23:25so their all-round skills and adaptability will be tested

0:23:25 > 0:23:28to the maximum over the four different stages,

0:23:28 > 0:23:30each of which is used twice.

0:23:30 > 0:23:33The sun's out so there's going to be lots of grip out there.

0:23:33 > 0:23:36Good completion again so looking forward to getting back out

0:23:36 > 0:23:39and if I can hang around about the top ten then I think

0:23:39 > 0:23:41that's a good achievement today.

0:23:42 > 0:23:46Euan Thorburn had successfully defended his National Rally title

0:23:46 > 0:23:48around the same roads over the previous two days

0:23:48 > 0:23:52so he was in blistering form going into the Reivers.

0:23:52 > 0:23:55David is always going to be really quick, Jock, Mike, everyone else

0:23:55 > 0:23:58will be fast so we're going to have to be on our game.

0:23:58 > 0:24:01But after yesterday, confidence is high so hopefully we can push on.

0:24:01 > 0:24:04Thorburn and David Bogie would be contesting the event

0:24:04 > 0:24:07in matching Ford Focus World Rally Cars.

0:24:08 > 0:24:11Bogie went out of the Clark after stage one last year,

0:24:11 > 0:24:14but you couldn't discount him in his new motor.

0:24:14 > 0:24:17We made a lot of suspension and diff' changes so, as I say,

0:24:17 > 0:24:20we did a few miles last week in the car, not too many.

0:24:20 > 0:24:23I would have liked more, but the initial feeling was very good

0:24:23 > 0:24:27so we'll just have to get the first two stages out the way and really assess the job from there.

0:24:36 > 0:24:40The Reivers is the one event where two-wheel drive cars

0:24:40 > 0:24:42can compete with their four-wheel cousins,

0:24:42 > 0:24:44if the conditions remain dry.

0:24:45 > 0:24:48Steve Bannister in a Ford Escort

0:24:48 > 0:24:51was top SRC competitor on the tarmac in 2008.

0:24:51 > 0:24:55And he and Louise Sutherland were once again on sparkling form

0:24:55 > 0:25:00pushing hard in a slightly less competitive historic version of their Mark 2.

0:25:00 > 0:25:03By the end of the event he'd pulled up to ninth

0:25:03 > 0:25:07and finished as the leading two-wheel drive competitor.

0:25:07 > 0:25:10The Inglis brothers, Alistair and Colin, from Angus

0:25:10 > 0:25:13put in a fine start to their day, lying eighth

0:25:13 > 0:25:16after the first two tests in a Mitsubishi Evo V.

0:25:17 > 0:25:20Two and flat left two narrows and tightens to three, OK?

0:25:20 > 0:25:24Barry Groundwater from Stonehaven's had a dream start to the championship

0:25:24 > 0:25:28and he was doing his chances of another good points haul no harm

0:25:28 > 0:25:30in fifth.

0:25:32 > 0:25:35Groundwater was three seconds behind Rory Young and Alan Cathers

0:25:35 > 0:25:38who were taking part in their first event of the season.

0:25:40 > 0:25:42Jock Armstrong, with Kirsty Riddick on the notes,

0:25:42 > 0:25:45was 12 seconds in front of Young in third.

0:25:47 > 0:25:48100.

0:25:52 > 0:25:53Three right minus.

0:25:54 > 0:25:57Keep in. Three right plus.

0:25:57 > 0:26:01But, as expected, the fight for ultimate supremacy was between local

0:26:01 > 0:26:05favourite Euan Thorburn with Paul Beaton in the navigator's seat.

0:26:08 > 0:26:12And defending champions David Bogie and Kevin Rae.

0:26:13 > 0:26:16Bogie stalled his car on the start line of stage one.

0:26:19 > 0:26:21Conceding the advantage to his rival.

0:26:25 > 0:26:28Their times were dead level around stage two.

0:26:34 > 0:26:36So, going into the first service halt,

0:26:36 > 0:26:39- Thorburn held a 16-second lead. - There's lots of chicanes

0:26:39 > 0:26:41in these stages and it's easy to make a mistake

0:26:41 > 0:26:45and 16 seconds sounds a lot, but not when you've got all these things

0:26:45 > 0:26:48in front of you. So, we'll see what happens, we'll push on.

0:26:48 > 0:26:51The launch control stalled on the start line on the first stage.

0:26:51 > 0:26:53The second went a lot better.

0:26:53 > 0:26:56Only regret, the soft compound tyre, should've been on a hard compound,

0:26:56 > 0:27:00but we'll change tyres now and hopefully it'll be onwards and upwards for the rest of the day.

0:27:00 > 0:27:04Chris Collie, who'd done so well in the previous round,

0:27:04 > 0:27:08had a nightmare start in Bothwell, snapping one of the drive shafts

0:27:08 > 0:27:11and almost being caught by Donnie MacDonald.

0:27:11 > 0:27:15He still managed to limp into service,

0:27:15 > 0:27:1718th of the SRC registered crews.

0:27:18 > 0:27:22The shaft into the rear hub sheared so we had no drive at all really.

0:27:22 > 0:27:25We had to go right up the gears to get any drive,

0:27:25 > 0:27:29and without management service between the two stages,

0:27:29 > 0:27:33I had to go back round and do stage two again with the snapped shaft.

0:27:33 > 0:27:36I lost a lot of time there, but we have a spare shaft

0:27:36 > 0:27:40that they're fitting and hopefully there's no more damage done,

0:27:40 > 0:27:42we can get back out in the afternoon.

0:27:42 > 0:27:46But Chris's driveshaft problems didn't end there.

0:27:46 > 0:27:52Two more came to grief which made his final position of 12th in the SRC all the more remarkable.

0:27:55 > 0:27:58Mike Faulkner had high hopes going into the event.

0:27:58 > 0:28:02But his race was run in stage one when he hit a cattle grid.

0:28:02 > 0:28:04It started really well, we had good times,

0:28:04 > 0:28:08split times were good. We got to about three quarters through,

0:28:08 > 0:28:10over a cattle grid with a bump

0:28:10 > 0:28:13and it pitched the car into the side of the road,

0:28:13 > 0:28:16which is quite peaty and boggy, and it broke the oil cooler

0:28:16 > 0:28:19and meant we lost oil pressure and that was the end of that.

0:28:44 > 0:28:47Langton may be less than two miles long,

0:28:47 > 0:28:50but the stage has more hazards than most others in Scotland,

0:28:50 > 0:28:53including the famous water splash.

0:29:07 > 0:29:11Jock Armstrong picked up a puncture in stage four

0:29:11 > 0:29:15and lost two minutes. Effectively ending his challenge in the Borders.

0:29:15 > 0:29:17Disaster. Got a puncture at the front left

0:29:17 > 0:29:20only two or three miles into the stage after Langton

0:29:20 > 0:29:22which would be...whatever it is.

0:29:22 > 0:29:26I had to do about four or five miles on a puncture.

0:29:26 > 0:29:31Jock ended the day ninth of the SRC registered competitors.

0:29:32 > 0:29:34I'm not laughing. End of.

0:29:37 > 0:29:39By the end of the first run through Edrom,

0:29:39 > 0:29:42the battle for the podium positions was narrowing.

0:29:44 > 0:29:47Andy Horne in his Metro was just outside the top three,

0:29:47 > 0:29:50lying fifth, but going really well.

0:29:50 > 0:29:52We are happy with fifth, it's a brilliant place.

0:29:52 > 0:29:55We came here hoping to get into the top ten.

0:29:55 > 0:29:58If we can maintain fifth, I'll be delighted, really pleased.

0:29:58 > 0:30:02After making the wrong tyre choice at the start, Quintin Milne was

0:30:02 > 0:30:06knocking on the door in fourth and asking questions of the top three.

0:30:06 > 0:30:10- How was that?- Sweaty! Really great stages in this,

0:30:10 > 0:30:13some mixed surfaces with some mud and stuff like that.

0:30:13 > 0:30:15These tyres are right now, it's heating up.

0:30:15 > 0:30:18It's a harder compound, but it's coming together now. We're having great fun.

0:30:18 > 0:30:20I don't know where we're sitting, but it's all good fun.

0:30:20 > 0:30:23Barry Groundwater had moved into third and was consolidating

0:30:23 > 0:30:27that position, 13 seconds ahead of Milne.

0:30:27 > 0:30:30Very quick, yeah, just no time to stop and think,

0:30:30 > 0:30:31that's the thing, it's all go.

0:30:31 > 0:30:35Thorburn and Beaton were still the crew to catch.

0:30:35 > 0:30:38They'd actually extended their lead over main rivals Bogie and Rae

0:30:38 > 0:30:42to 21 seconds with a repeat of the three-stage loop to come.

0:30:42 > 0:30:46But it hadn't been plain sailing all the way.

0:30:46 > 0:30:49Car reliability has been a recurring issue with Thorburn

0:30:49 > 0:30:52and once again, he was facing problems.

0:30:52 > 0:30:54We've got the electrical problem with the car,

0:30:54 > 0:30:56but we got another intercom which is battery powered

0:30:56 > 0:31:00which is separate to the car so we can hear each other now which helps.

0:31:00 > 0:31:03Had a fair push through the last few and had a bit of problem there,

0:31:03 > 0:31:06we ran wide and hit a bank and the wheel filled full of muck

0:31:06 > 0:31:09and it gave us a real bad vibration through the steering wheel

0:31:09 > 0:31:11and I thought we had a puncture for a while.

0:31:14 > 0:31:18Bogie had hurt his back on a jump over a bridge in Blackadder.

0:31:18 > 0:31:21The four-time Scottish champion had recovered,

0:31:21 > 0:31:24and he wasn't giving up on overhauling Thorburn.

0:31:24 > 0:31:27The back's OK, it was just jolted for a short period of time.

0:31:29 > 0:31:31It was a seriously hard landing,

0:31:31 > 0:31:33in all honesty, I should never have taken the bridge flat.

0:31:33 > 0:31:36I wasn't really thinking clearly at the time, I don't think!

0:31:36 > 0:31:39If we carry on at this pace then there's every likelihood

0:31:39 > 0:31:41that one of us will make a mistake.

0:31:41 > 0:31:44It can switch round very easy so hopefully it's not me.

0:31:44 > 0:31:46The top three positions remained the same

0:31:46 > 0:31:49after stage seven, Blackadder.

0:31:49 > 0:31:52Barry Groundwater held onto third after the final test

0:31:52 > 0:31:55for another podium finish.

0:31:55 > 0:31:59But there was a dramatic twist at the top of the leaderboard.

0:31:59 > 0:32:02Euan Thorburn emerged from Blackadder

0:32:02 > 0:32:04still 20 seconds ahead of Bogie.

0:32:07 > 0:32:11Yet again, he was undone by a mechanical malfunction.

0:32:11 > 0:32:16A hydraulic oil pipe had broken in his Ford Focus WRC.

0:32:17 > 0:32:20With the car repaired but not fully functional,

0:32:20 > 0:32:23Thorburn lost 30 seconds in the final run through Edrom

0:32:23 > 0:32:26and had to settle for second in the event.

0:32:29 > 0:32:31Aye, we're gutted, we should have won today,

0:32:31 > 0:32:33we can't take it away from him.

0:32:33 > 0:32:36But, David drove well and he wasn't far away from us

0:32:36 > 0:32:37and he picked up the spoils.

0:32:37 > 0:32:40We'll go to the Scottish and try and win there and see what we can do.

0:32:43 > 0:32:47Bogie and Rae recorded their fourth Jim Clark Reivers Rally victory

0:32:47 > 0:32:48in the last five years,

0:32:48 > 0:32:53and their second win in succession in this year's Championship.

0:32:53 > 0:32:56We're very happy with the car, very well set up for tarmac.

0:32:56 > 0:32:58The reliability so far has been very good, so...

0:32:58 > 0:33:03Last year we used the Metro and we retired with gearbox failure

0:33:03 > 0:33:07on the first stage so to come back in a new car and first tarmac rally,

0:33:07 > 0:33:09it's really good to get a win again.

0:33:09 > 0:33:12The top three in the championship remained the same after

0:33:12 > 0:33:14the third event.

0:33:14 > 0:33:16But Donnie MacDonald's seventh place in the Reivers

0:33:16 > 0:33:18boosted him into fourth.

0:33:20 > 0:33:24In other classes, Dumfries and Galloway crew Iain Haining

0:33:24 > 0:33:27and Mairi Riddick had a trouble-free run on their way

0:33:27 > 0:33:32to a third consecutive SRC victory in Class 3 in their Vauxhall Nova.

0:33:34 > 0:33:38And Group N honours went to Conon Bridge driver John Morrison

0:33:38 > 0:33:41with Elgin's Susan Shanks on the notes.

0:34:08 > 0:34:10The RSAC Scottish Rally in Dumfries

0:34:10 > 0:34:13was a return to home ground for David Bogie

0:34:13 > 0:34:17and a chance for him to extend his lead in the championship.

0:34:17 > 0:34:20But he'd be facing a big challenge from Euan Thorburn

0:34:20 > 0:34:24who lost out to Bogie in his back yard at the Reivers.

0:34:24 > 0:34:26We need to start our championship today.

0:34:26 > 0:34:29We need to get a win, if not a good podium position,

0:34:29 > 0:34:33We need to score in every round now, it's all about finishing

0:34:33 > 0:34:35and finishing well now, for us.

0:34:35 > 0:34:37We're out to win today, that's what we're here to do.

0:34:37 > 0:34:40I've got a lot of friends and family around here,

0:34:40 > 0:34:42I'd like to put on a good result for them.

0:34:42 > 0:34:44Although it's my local rally,

0:34:44 > 0:34:47I'm in these forests once a year, the same as everyone else,

0:34:47 > 0:34:51so I would know the stages in Aberdeen or Elgin for example as well as here.

0:34:51 > 0:34:54Jock Armstrong's another local favourite

0:34:54 > 0:34:57and he DOES believe knowing the stages is a bonus.

0:34:57 > 0:35:00It definitely gives the local drivers an advantage

0:35:00 > 0:35:02as you can walk round about and tyre kick everyone else's car

0:35:02 > 0:35:06and just go, "I'm one up on you". So, psychologically, it should be.

0:35:06 > 0:35:10Stonehaven's Barry Groundwater was lying third in the championship

0:35:10 > 0:35:13and was delighted with the way his season had been going.

0:35:13 > 0:35:17You know, we've had a few good results so far.

0:35:17 > 0:35:19I think today might even it out,

0:35:19 > 0:35:22we've got really strong competition today,

0:35:22 > 0:35:26so it's going to make it more interesting to see where we stand.

0:35:43 > 0:35:48The two world rally cars set a cracking pace right from the start.

0:35:48 > 0:35:50Bogie and Rae, who were looking for their third win

0:35:50 > 0:35:54in the Dumfries event, set the second fastest time.

0:35:54 > 0:35:56Just 0.7 of a second behind

0:35:56 > 0:35:59stage winners Euan Thorburn and Paul Beaton.

0:36:00 > 0:36:04There was an interesting battle going on behind THEM as well.

0:36:05 > 0:36:07Northern raider Quintin Milne

0:36:07 > 0:36:10was 13 seconds adrift of the leaders in third.

0:36:10 > 0:36:11Left two.

0:36:11 > 0:36:14Keep right for bad jump. Big jump, I suppose.

0:36:14 > 0:36:16Left two, keep right over jump. Right, right, right.

0:36:16 > 0:36:20His swashbuckling style's a real crowd-pleaser!

0:36:23 > 0:36:27Milne was keeping Jock Armstrong and Aberdeen's Chris Collie at bay.

0:36:28 > 0:36:30They recorded exactly the same time

0:36:30 > 0:36:34to put them into joint fourth after Windy Hill.

0:36:34 > 0:36:36Barry Groundwater, with Neil Shanks on the notes,

0:36:36 > 0:36:38knew he'd have to up his game

0:36:38 > 0:36:41after coming in eighth of the SRC registered crews.

0:36:43 > 0:36:45At just under 14 miles,

0:36:45 > 0:36:48Stage two, Ae West, was the longest test in the rally.

0:36:48 > 0:36:52Thorburn went into warp speed to take almost a second a mile

0:36:52 > 0:36:56out of Bogie and give himself a lifeline into the title race.

0:36:56 > 0:36:59Euan, talk it through. You must be quite happy at this stage?

0:36:59 > 0:37:01Yeah, coming from Jim Clark back on to Scottish,

0:37:01 > 0:37:04on to gravel, it took a bit getting used to on the first stage

0:37:04 > 0:37:07but we had a good push through there and the second stage,

0:37:07 > 0:37:10we had a go at it and took some time out of David. Going well so far.

0:37:12 > 0:37:15You must have analysed every detail?

0:37:15 > 0:37:18Can you pinpoint anything at all that's not gone quite to plan?

0:37:18 > 0:37:22As I say, just a couple of errors, braking late into junctions

0:37:22 > 0:37:25and when I slide the car round and losing a bit of time

0:37:25 > 0:37:27we could probably have went for a better tyre choice,

0:37:27 > 0:37:30but it's all ifs and buts. We just need to focus on this afternoon.

0:37:30 > 0:37:34Milne was performing admirably increasing his lead

0:37:34 > 0:37:39over Armstrong and Kirsty Riddick to almost nine seconds.

0:37:40 > 0:37:43Chris Collie was hanging on in fifth. But he was having to fend off

0:37:43 > 0:37:48the challenge of Barry Groundwater who'd moved up a couple of places.

0:37:48 > 0:37:51I got a slow start this morning coming from the Jim Clark, being a tarmac rally,

0:37:51 > 0:37:54just trying to get my braking and it's been difficult

0:37:54 > 0:37:57to get back into it again, it's just been holding us up.

0:37:57 > 0:38:00Nothing really other than driver error at the moment,

0:38:00 > 0:38:03but we've got the likes of Quintin who's absolutely uncatchable today

0:38:03 > 0:38:06so I'm just going to have to do my own thing today.

0:38:31 > 0:38:34Heathhall is a big favourite with spectators.

0:38:34 > 0:38:36It's less than a mile long, but there's plenty of action for fans.

0:38:40 > 0:38:43Despite driving the short stage with his boot lid up,

0:38:43 > 0:38:45Thorburn still outpaced his rivals

0:38:45 > 0:38:49and increased his lead slightly going into stage four.

0:38:52 > 0:38:55Bogie was second overall and looked to be safe in that position,

0:38:55 > 0:38:59unless he had a major mishap on the final two tests.

0:39:03 > 0:39:06Jock Armstrong and co-driver Kirsty Riddick upped their pace

0:39:06 > 0:39:10from the morning and began to claw back time from Quintin Milne.

0:39:10 > 0:39:14After Shaw Hill, the Castle Douglas driver was less

0:39:14 > 0:39:17than two seconds behind Milne with an 11-mile stage to come.

0:39:27 > 0:39:30Yet again Thorburn was fastest through Shaw Hill

0:39:30 > 0:39:34and before the start of the final test, he was 19 seconds up on Bogie.

0:39:36 > 0:39:38Further down the field,

0:39:38 > 0:39:41Chris Collie was hanging onto fifth from Mike Faulkner.

0:39:41 > 0:39:44While Barry Groundwater appeared to have blown

0:39:44 > 0:39:48his chances of a top-five finish by dropping down to seventh -

0:39:48 > 0:39:51a full 23 seconds behind Collie.

0:39:51 > 0:39:55But, things do have a habit of changing around

0:39:55 > 0:39:59on the final stage of an SRC event, and so it proved again.

0:40:02 > 0:40:04Collie, with Lisa Watson navigating,

0:40:04 > 0:40:06had a nightmare end to their day...

0:40:06 > 0:40:08You've not got control, man.

0:40:08 > 0:40:11..getting a puncture and snapping a driveshaft

0:40:11 > 0:40:14four miles from the end of the stage.

0:40:17 > 0:40:19It put paid to their hopes

0:40:19 > 0:40:22and they dropped down to seventh in the standings.

0:40:22 > 0:40:24The Aberdeenshire pair were leap-frogged

0:40:24 > 0:40:26by Mike Faulkner and Peter Foy.

0:40:28 > 0:40:32And, crucially for their championship, Barry Groundwater

0:40:32 > 0:40:35and Neil Shanks finished the Scottish in fifth -

0:40:35 > 0:40:39guaranteeing Groundwater third place so far in the title race.

0:40:41 > 0:40:44Quintin Milne just managed to hold off the challenge

0:40:44 > 0:40:47of Jock Armstrong to confirm third place -

0:40:47 > 0:40:51another podium position to add to his win in Jedburgh.

0:40:51 > 0:40:54To swap times with someone as talented as Jock means a lot to me,

0:40:54 > 0:40:56so I feel like I'm getting somewhere.

0:40:56 > 0:40:57Probably came for the first time,

0:40:57 > 0:40:59and I should have done this before, my dad's advice,

0:40:59 > 0:41:02cos he used to rally many years ago, was go testing.

0:41:02 > 0:41:04Went down to Wales and did set-up for the first time,

0:41:04 > 0:41:07up until now I've been using a base Proflex setting

0:41:07 > 0:41:09from Alistair McRae's days, just a general click

0:41:09 > 0:41:13that a lot of people start off on, and it's all I've ever known.

0:41:13 > 0:41:16So, did a few little changes and, if anything, it's helped.

0:41:16 > 0:41:19Or it's just a bit of luck today, either way, I'm delighted.

0:41:19 > 0:41:23Not surprisingly, the two world rally cars dominated the event.

0:41:23 > 0:41:27Bogie and Rae finishing second in their home rally.

0:41:27 > 0:41:3019 seconds behind Thorburn and Beaton.

0:41:30 > 0:41:33Bottle of water at my feet there, right from the stage start,

0:41:33 > 0:41:34it was rolling about the pedals.

0:41:34 > 0:41:36- This was?- That's the very one.

0:41:36 > 0:41:38That was a bit frustrating.

0:41:38 > 0:41:41To be honest, before we went into that stage,

0:41:41 > 0:41:43we knew we were going to beat the Bogie time,

0:41:43 > 0:41:46I think we've taken 15-20 seconds off it, so it's no gain at all.

0:41:46 > 0:41:50That's interesting though. This thing stopped you driving properly

0:41:50 > 0:41:51because it was stuck at your feet.

0:41:51 > 0:41:54Yeah, it rolls underneath the brake and accelerator pedal

0:41:54 > 0:41:56and the speeds in that stage are so, so quick

0:41:56 > 0:41:59so it was a bit frustrating, but a lesson learned.

0:41:59 > 0:42:02It was Thorburn who triumphed.

0:42:02 > 0:42:04His first win of the season,

0:42:04 > 0:42:08and one he desperately needed to keep his championship hopes alive.

0:42:08 > 0:42:11We had a big push this morning, took a bit of time off of David

0:42:11 > 0:42:14and we've held on to it. We've added it to every stage since

0:42:14 > 0:42:17and we had a good push through there so I can't complain, good win.

0:42:17 > 0:42:19What's been going right for you?

0:42:19 > 0:42:21I don't know, we've had a run of bad luck

0:42:21 > 0:42:24and things went against us. We've always had good pace,

0:42:24 > 0:42:27today we got round, clean run, no issues really.

0:42:27 > 0:42:29Yeah, enjoyed it, been brilliant.

0:42:29 > 0:42:31- How pleased are you?- We needed this today, obviously, to get our

0:42:31 > 0:42:35- championship back on track so delighted to get the win.- Well done.

0:42:35 > 0:42:39Stewart Davidson with Breagha Dobney on the notes took

0:42:39 > 0:42:43the Class-5 victory in a Ford Escort.

0:42:45 > 0:42:48In the 1,600 Two-Wheel-Drive category in Dumfries,

0:42:48 > 0:42:51Alasdair Graham from Paisley, co-driven by Laura Stuart

0:42:51 > 0:42:54picked up his second consecutive class win.

0:42:58 > 0:43:02At the halfway point in the 2013 ARR Craib Scottish Rally Championship

0:43:02 > 0:43:06the leaderboard is beginning to take shape.

0:43:06 > 0:43:08Quintin Milne's put in a superb performance

0:43:08 > 0:43:11and is hot on the trail of David Bogie.

0:43:12 > 0:43:15And it's been a strong effort too from Chris Collie

0:43:15 > 0:43:19who might have been higher had it not been for mechanical problems.

0:43:19 > 0:43:22So, a win for Euan Thorburn takes us neatly to the end

0:43:22 > 0:43:26of the first four events of this year's eight-series championship.

0:43:27 > 0:43:30We'll see you again for more thrilling action

0:43:30 > 0:43:32as the 2013 title race heats up,

0:43:32 > 0:43:35starting with the Speyside Stages in Elgin.
