0:00:14 > 0:00:20The Welsh team of 1978 were going in search of an unprecedented goal -

0:00:20 > 0:00:22a triple-Triple Crown.

0:00:22 > 0:00:25This was the most golden of generations,

0:00:25 > 0:00:28a side packed with superstars.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31But, unbeknown to their legions of loyal fans,

0:00:31 > 0:00:37some of the biggest names of all would be hanging up their boots for good at the end of the tournament.

0:00:37 > 0:00:41But for now they were focused on another assault on the Five Nations Championship

0:00:41 > 0:00:45and had started confidently with wins over England and Scotland.

0:00:50 > 0:00:54Now Edwards to Bennett, along the line there to Fenwick.

0:00:54 > 0:00:55The change of tactic.

0:00:57 > 0:00:59CHEERING DROWNS OUT COMMENTARY

0:01:03 > 0:01:05- CROWD CHEERS - Bennett, drawing it in.

0:01:05 > 0:01:08His third penalty of the match.

0:01:08 > 0:01:12150 not out for the Welsh captain.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18Gareth Edwards.

0:01:18 > 0:01:19And it's Edwards again.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21Has he made the score?

0:01:22 > 0:01:25Gravell. Gravell of Llanelli.

0:01:25 > 0:01:27And Gravell is there!

0:01:27 > 0:01:31The presence of so many household names and Wales' recent run of form

0:01:31 > 0:01:35made them overwhelming favourites to win in Ireland.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38The expectations of the media were incredible.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41Wales were going for the triple-Triple Crown

0:01:41 > 0:01:43and I think it was the first time in history

0:01:43 > 0:01:45that a side could win a triple-Triple Crown.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48So, in a way, perhaps quite rightly,

0:01:48 > 0:01:51they were giving plaudits to some of the Welsh team.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53They were saying, "What hope have Ireland got?"

0:01:53 > 0:01:56The great Gareth Edwards, the great Gerald Davies,

0:01:56 > 0:01:58the great JPR Williams.

0:01:58 > 0:02:00If one fails, the other two will come off.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03They really built Wales up into such a team

0:02:03 > 0:02:05that they were almost world-beaters.

0:02:05 > 0:02:07Phil had other things on his mind.

0:02:07 > 0:02:11He'd recently returned from a gruelling Lions tour

0:02:11 > 0:02:14and was beginning to fall out of love with the game.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16Bennett, Irvine.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19He's knocked it on. That surely is it.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21The final whistle goes.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23The last chance has gone.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25'Before the game,'

0:02:25 > 0:02:29I'd been thinking to myself, "I'm missing my family,

0:02:29 > 0:02:31"missing going out with my son on a Sunday,"

0:02:31 > 0:02:35because we used to train in the Afan Lido every Sunday

0:02:35 > 0:02:36before the internationals.

0:02:36 > 0:02:40The Lions tour had caught up with me especially because I was captain.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42I didn't have a very good Lions tour.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44I think we were physically and mentally shattered.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00We realised by the time we got to Lansdowne Road

0:03:00 > 0:03:02how difficult a game it was going to be.

0:03:02 > 0:03:07What will stick in my mind for ever and a day was, we had the team-talk,

0:03:07 > 0:03:10the boys were up for it and I'm feeling fairly confident.

0:03:10 > 0:03:14Knock comes on the door, referee wants you to toss the coin.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17It's Georges Domercq, an old friend of mine,

0:03:17 > 0:03:19and Georges loved a fluent, fast-moving game.

0:03:19 > 0:03:24I'm thinking, "Hang on, do we really need Georges this afternoon or do we want a stricter referee?"

0:03:24 > 0:03:27So we stroll down towards the Irish dressing room

0:03:27 > 0:03:31and the noise coming out of there was almost unbelievable.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33We couldn't hear ourselves talk.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35They were really getting pumped up for the game.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38I looked at the door of the dressing room

0:03:38 > 0:03:40and there was steam coming from underneath the door.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42I thought, "Oh, my goodness me."

0:03:43 > 0:03:46We went on to the pitch first as the visitors

0:03:46 > 0:03:48and the crowd was incredible.

0:03:48 > 0:03:51There were a lot of Welsh supporters out there. Great welcome.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54Then all of a sudden... And you know when a team comes out.

0:03:54 > 0:03:59They absolutely flew out of the tunnel, out into the pitch,

0:03:59 > 0:04:03and were going 100mph and you know a team is pumped up there.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06I can always remember saying to a mate as he passed -

0:04:06 > 0:04:09Fergus Slattery who I toured with for a long time in 1974 -

0:04:09 > 0:04:10"All right, Slatts, everything OK?"

0:04:10 > 0:04:14and I can't say to you what words he told me that very second,

0:04:14 > 0:04:16but something was off.

0:04:16 > 0:04:18Very, very strong words, and I thought, "Oh, my goodness,

0:04:18 > 0:04:20"this is going to be some battle."

0:04:20 > 0:04:22And it did turn out to be a huge battle.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28All await this deciding match

0:04:28 > 0:04:32as Wales challenge for the Triple Crown at Lansdowne Road once again.

0:04:32 > 0:04:36Five times Ireland have denied them. Can it happen once again,

0:04:36 > 0:04:38as Bennett kicks off?

0:04:40 > 0:04:43Wales, from left to right, unchanged from the side

0:04:43 > 0:04:46that has won their first two matches this season

0:04:46 > 0:04:48against England and Scotland.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53So, the first line-out.

0:04:53 > 0:04:56Long for Jeff Squire but stolen at the back by Willie Duggan.

0:04:56 > 0:04:58Ireland run it straight away.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01That's good running there by Alistair McKibbin.

0:05:01 > 0:05:03On the ten-metre line.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06The drive taken on by Harry Steele with Ned Byrne.

0:05:07 > 0:05:12John Moloney over the top of Ward.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15And it's out to McLennan, inside it is to McKibbin.

0:05:15 > 0:05:19McKibbin held by Derek Quinnell on the 22-metre line.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21And what a start by Ireland.

0:05:23 > 0:05:25And the whistle's gone.

0:05:25 > 0:05:27Pat Whelan with the throw. To the middle.

0:05:27 > 0:05:30Moss Keane deflects to Moloney. To Ward.

0:05:30 > 0:05:35The dummy scissors and straight out to Ensor, coming into the line.

0:05:35 > 0:05:37JPR Williams outside the 22.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40Looks inside, is caught, though, by Moss Keane.

0:05:40 > 0:05:45Ireland drive over but it's picked up by Derek Quinnell

0:05:45 > 0:05:50and Bennett leans back, looks for the long touch and finds it

0:05:50 > 0:05:52with a superbly-placed diagonal ball.

0:05:52 > 0:05:57Phil Bennett, the Welsh captain. This his 28th appearance for Wales.

0:05:58 > 0:06:01Moloney. Didn't look straight, nor was it.

0:06:04 > 0:06:09So a free kick against John Moloney for that crooked feed

0:06:09 > 0:06:11and it looks as though Wales will run it.

0:06:11 > 0:06:15Edwards hoists one way across field into the Irish 22.

0:06:16 > 0:06:18Gibson it is.

0:06:18 > 0:06:19Gibson.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21CROWD CHEER

0:06:21 > 0:06:23And listen to that roar!

0:06:25 > 0:06:28To the middle. Martin, two-handed, leaps high.

0:06:28 > 0:06:30Sets it up well on the halfway line.

0:06:32 > 0:06:37And Wales drive on but the mauling in there...

0:06:37 > 0:06:40And it looks as though Ireland have broken away with possession.

0:06:40 > 0:06:43They have through Ned Byrne to Slattery, to Phil Orr.

0:06:43 > 0:06:45Orr flips it up to Harry Steele.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51But the pass adjudged to be off the ground after the tackle

0:06:51 > 0:06:53and a penalty to Wales.

0:06:55 > 0:06:57Eight minutes played

0:06:57 > 0:07:00and a chance for Wales to go ahead through Fenwick.

0:07:00 > 0:07:02It's over. What a superb kick!

0:07:02 > 0:07:04It just carried over the crossbar.

0:07:04 > 0:07:09So, Wales take first blood

0:07:09 > 0:07:12after just eight-and-a-half minutes

0:07:12 > 0:07:15through the boot of Steve Fenwick from Bridgend.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20Edwards, in his tenth match against Ireland.

0:07:27 > 0:07:32And it's a foot-up decision against Bobby Windsor.

0:07:32 > 0:07:34What will Moloney do here?

0:07:36 > 0:07:40Opts for the tapped penalty to Tony Ward.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42Ward's first run is caught by Cobner.

0:07:47 > 0:07:52Inside the 22 and a penalty it is, in front of the posts.

0:07:52 > 0:07:56And Wales had come round offside.

0:07:59 > 0:08:02Ireland trailing by six points. Ward...

0:08:02 > 0:08:04No mistake at all with that.

0:08:07 > 0:08:09So, Ireland's first points of the match

0:08:09 > 0:08:13pull them within three points of the Wales total after 16 minutes.

0:08:13 > 0:08:18For Tony Ward, his 20th point in international rugby

0:08:18 > 0:08:21in this, his third international.

0:08:21 > 0:08:23The tail of the line there with Derek Quinnell

0:08:23 > 0:08:25beside Terry Cobner.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28Windsor it is that throws long for Squire, challenged by Slattery.

0:08:28 > 0:08:32Quinnell on the peel, held by Duggan and Slattery as well.

0:08:32 > 0:08:34Red shirts trying to drive over the top.

0:08:34 > 0:08:35Man and ball together

0:08:35 > 0:08:38and interference by Ireland with the ball.

0:08:39 > 0:08:4319 minutes into the first half, Fenwick again.

0:08:44 > 0:08:47And Fenwick it is again.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49Three out of three for Steve Fenwick,

0:08:49 > 0:08:54taking advantage of Ireland's mistakes and putting Wales,

0:08:54 > 0:08:56once again, six points clear

0:08:56 > 0:08:59as we come up to midway in this first half.

0:09:01 > 0:09:02Tony Ward.

0:09:04 > 0:09:09And the pattern repeated there with Keane and Martin challenging.

0:09:09 > 0:09:11Ireland win it, Moloney to Ward.

0:09:11 > 0:09:12McNaughton.

0:09:14 > 0:09:18JPR Williams waits and JJ Williams covers back.

0:09:22 > 0:09:25That's McLennan.

0:09:25 > 0:09:28Dummies the kick and runs, bouncing off Gerald Davies.

0:09:31 > 0:09:33Wales, the put-in.

0:09:42 > 0:09:47Good surge, channelled and controlled by Derek Quinnell

0:09:47 > 0:09:49as they close in towards the Irish line.

0:09:53 > 0:09:57They win it. Edwards, Bennett, the scissors, it's with Gravell.

0:09:57 > 0:10:01Gravell almost to the line. Held up by the defence.

0:10:01 > 0:10:04Wales still in possession, it's loose again, up from Price...

0:10:04 > 0:10:07Fenwick going for the line, will he make it? He's got there!

0:10:07 > 0:10:08What a try by Fenwick!

0:10:08 > 0:10:11CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:10:11 > 0:10:16So, it was that initial Welsh surge, the control,

0:10:16 > 0:10:19then Ireland holding them up, but back it came again

0:10:19 > 0:10:22and I think it was Graham Price that popped it up,

0:10:22 > 0:10:26and finally Fenwick, seeing the gap appearing on the wide outside,

0:10:26 > 0:10:30really pinned his ears back and sprinted for the line

0:10:30 > 0:10:33and eventually made it for Wales' first try.

0:10:34 > 0:10:38Still that willingness by Ireland to run,

0:10:38 > 0:10:45but Ward not really in harmony with his back row.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50A little slow to support.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53Moloney. Ward switches left to Ensor.

0:10:56 > 0:11:00JPR Williams with McLennan in with the tackle,

0:11:00 > 0:11:02just outside the Welsh 22.

0:11:02 > 0:11:05- The green shirts driving over man and ball... - WHISTLE BLOWS

0:11:08 > 0:11:10Squire.

0:11:10 > 0:11:14Loosely back as Phil Orr and Pat Whelan came through.

0:11:14 > 0:11:17Taken on by Moloney, now it's Orr again.

0:11:17 > 0:11:19Driving up to the Welsh 22.

0:11:19 > 0:11:23Still it's Philip Orr, this powerful prop forward from Leinster.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26Now Moss Keane, Moss Keane on the rampage!

0:11:26 > 0:11:31Five metres out and Ireland ever closer to that Welsh line.

0:11:31 > 0:11:34Finally held up but given a penalty,

0:11:34 > 0:11:37as Wales came round offside

0:11:37 > 0:11:40and maybe that was a gesture from the referee

0:11:40 > 0:11:44of the use of a fist or an arm at close quarters there.

0:11:46 > 0:11:48Tony Ward.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50No mistake at all that time,

0:11:50 > 0:11:55so Ireland taking full advantage of Derek Quinnell's absence

0:11:55 > 0:11:59to pull back three points and cut that deficit to just seven now

0:11:59 > 0:12:03through a second penalty by Tony Ward.

0:12:04 > 0:12:08And perhaps a guide to the strength of this Welsh team

0:12:08 > 0:12:11is that four 1977 British Lions

0:12:11 > 0:12:16number amongst the replacements today,

0:12:16 > 0:12:19together with two who don't even make the 21-man squad

0:12:19 > 0:12:21on duty today for Wales.

0:12:22 > 0:12:26And Wales it is in possession. Gravell.

0:12:26 > 0:12:31JPR Williams up on the burst, looks for support from Gerald Davies

0:12:31 > 0:12:38but the tackle came with the pass from Alistair McKibbin.

0:12:40 > 0:12:43Moss Keane wins it, though, well. Moloney to Ward.

0:12:43 > 0:12:45Straight to McKibbin.

0:12:45 > 0:12:49That was a poor pass to Ensor but he used his sense

0:12:49 > 0:12:53and kept it with his foot as Gibson runs on and chips ahead.

0:12:53 > 0:12:55BOOING

0:12:57 > 0:13:01But obstruction way back against Gibson.

0:13:01 > 0:13:04After he had chipped that ball ahead,

0:13:04 > 0:13:08the tackle was late, the block by the Welshman.

0:13:10 > 0:13:12PIPE BAND PLAYS

0:13:18 > 0:13:21So it's Tony Ward to start this second half for Ireland.

0:13:21 > 0:13:27Ward, having shown odd flashes of that confidence and class

0:13:27 > 0:13:29we've seen in his debut season.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32Wales, though, through 13 points by Steve Fenwick,

0:13:32 > 0:13:36leading 13-6.

0:13:36 > 0:13:39Edwards back to Bennett.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46Wales, challenging for the Triple Crown today,

0:13:46 > 0:13:49happy with that seven-point lead, no doubt.

0:13:51 > 0:13:53Cobner and Quinnell trying to clean it up

0:13:53 > 0:13:57and there's the mauler supreme, Geoff Wheel, leading the way,

0:13:57 > 0:14:01supported by Bobby Windsor and Jeff Squire.

0:14:03 > 0:14:05And still Wales in possession and going forward,

0:14:05 > 0:14:08setting it back now to Edwards.

0:14:08 > 0:14:10Ensor...

0:14:13 > 0:14:15..switches to the open side.

0:14:16 > 0:14:18JPR Williams coming to cover across-field...

0:14:18 > 0:14:24- BOOING - ..and the crowd reacting to that earlier obstruction

0:14:24 > 0:14:28on Mike Gibson by JPR Williams and giving him the bird.

0:14:29 > 0:14:32So, it's Edwards to put in, in midfield.

0:14:34 > 0:14:38And it was a foot-up decision against Windsor,

0:14:38 > 0:14:42giving the free kick to Ireland.

0:14:42 > 0:14:44No direct kick at goal allowed, of course,

0:14:44 > 0:14:47so perhaps we'll see the drop goal.

0:14:47 > 0:14:50There it is from Tony Ward!

0:14:53 > 0:14:55So calmly executed

0:14:55 > 0:14:59but so effective.

0:14:59 > 0:15:05So Ireland, within two-and-a-half minutes of this second half,

0:15:05 > 0:15:08pull back another three points.

0:15:17 > 0:15:19From Martin to Edwards, Bennett,

0:15:19 > 0:15:21now down the line the ball goes,

0:15:21 > 0:15:24Gravell, trying to make the half-break.

0:15:24 > 0:15:26Fenwick under pressure, though, from McKibbin.

0:15:26 > 0:15:28WHISTLE BLOWS

0:15:28 > 0:15:30And the whistle goes.

0:15:32 > 0:15:36Quinnell the first hands on it but Duggan comes through,

0:15:36 > 0:15:38up to the halfway line,

0:15:38 > 0:15:41sets it back perfectly for Moloney. Now Ward.

0:15:43 > 0:15:46- CHEERING - On the line or out on the full?

0:15:46 > 0:15:49It's bounced into touch,

0:15:49 > 0:15:54so good ground made by the diagonal ball from Tony Ward.

0:15:57 > 0:16:01A lone daffodil signifying a band -

0:16:01 > 0:16:04and there are many of them here, too - of Welsh supporters.

0:16:05 > 0:16:08Duggan bursts through, held by Cobner.

0:16:17 > 0:16:20Allan Martin going in with first hand and then boot,

0:16:20 > 0:16:25and the referee not happy with the climbing-in with the boot.

0:16:26 > 0:16:30Wales lead as Ensor tries this goal from the halfway line.

0:16:30 > 0:16:3212-and-a-half minutes into the second half.

0:16:32 > 0:16:35It's a huge kick...

0:16:35 > 0:16:41just dropping short as JPR Williams switches to Gerald Davies

0:16:41 > 0:16:43on the scissors out of defence.

0:16:43 > 0:16:46Gerald Davies weaving another intricate path.

0:16:46 > 0:16:47Finds JPR Williams.

0:16:47 > 0:16:49CHEERING

0:16:53 > 0:16:56Edwards, Bennett, Gravell,

0:16:56 > 0:17:00Fenwick, down the line for the first time completely!

0:17:00 > 0:17:01From JPR Williams to JJ

0:17:01 > 0:17:05and the crunching tackles of Gibson and Slattery.

0:17:05 > 0:17:09Almost a forlorn look there on the face of JPR Williams.

0:17:09 > 0:17:13That's good tackling in defence, the quick line-out taken from Price.

0:17:13 > 0:17:14Edwards to Bennett.

0:17:14 > 0:17:17Bennett on one of those long outside runs.

0:17:17 > 0:17:19Still Bennett going.

0:17:19 > 0:17:22And a touch of an Irish hand of Tony Ward in the way.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27But that was smart, quick thinking by Wales,
