0:00:15 > 0:00:20Travelling to Twickenham in the '70s held no fear for the Welsh.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23In 1976, England were holders of the wooden spoon

0:00:23 > 0:00:27and the rivalry was becoming increasingly one-sided.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30The men in red had lost just once to their nearest neighbours

0:00:30 > 0:00:33in the previous 12 meetings.

0:00:33 > 0:00:36That solitary defeat was in 1974,

0:00:36 > 0:00:38it was a match that JPR Williams missed,

0:00:38 > 0:00:43thus keeping his undefeated record against the old enemy intact.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46I was very fortunate, having spent most of my rugby career

0:00:46 > 0:00:51living in London, that my best record was against England.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54Not only had I played against them at Under 15 and Under 18 level,

0:00:54 > 0:00:56as a junior, and never lost,

0:00:56 > 0:00:59I played at senior level on 11 occasions

0:00:59 > 0:01:01and came out with 11 Ws.

0:01:01 > 0:01:04MUSIC: "Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult

0:01:07 > 0:01:09The previous year we'd had six new caps over in Paris

0:01:09 > 0:01:12and managed to win against the odds.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16The charge downfield from Graham Price.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21Price. This could be a dramatic score.

0:01:21 > 0:01:25They'll never believe it in Pontypool!

0:01:25 > 0:01:28The great strength, to me, I think it's the same in all teams,

0:01:28 > 0:01:30really, is your strength in depth.

0:01:30 > 0:01:32We had lots of very good players

0:01:32 > 0:01:36who could not get near the international side.

0:01:38 > 0:01:43Most of our play was off the cuff. We practised a lot.

0:01:43 > 0:01:46We were very confident in each other's ability.

0:01:46 > 0:01:50There was a lot of good running off the ball.

0:01:50 > 0:01:52At the end of the day,

0:01:52 > 0:01:54it was just a self-belief.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56There was no telling off of players who did things

0:01:56 > 0:01:58which the coach didn't agree with.

0:01:58 > 0:02:02You were allowed to have a free hand and if it didn't come off,

0:02:02 > 0:02:07then that was just bad luck, but if it came off, it was great.

0:02:07 > 0:02:11Wales were the reigning Five Nations champions

0:02:11 > 0:02:14and the key to that success was stability.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17We had a settled side at the time.

0:02:17 > 0:02:21Having Gareth Edwards at scrum-half certainly gave the team

0:02:21 > 0:02:24a tremendous confidence.

0:02:24 > 0:02:27And apart from a few occasions,

0:02:27 > 0:02:32it was virtually Barry John and Phil Bennett throughout the '70s.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35Windsor throws, Mervyn Davies, again.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38We had very good forwards who were mobile as well,

0:02:38 > 0:02:41but we had the half-backs

0:02:41 > 0:02:44to bring the best out of the outside-backs.

0:02:44 > 0:02:48It's going to be another try for JJ Williams. He's made it.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51Virtually the same, that same team stayed together

0:02:51 > 0:02:54although there had been a little bit of a furore in Wales

0:02:54 > 0:02:57that Phil Bennett was demoted to number three

0:02:57 > 0:02:59in the outside-half position,

0:02:59 > 0:03:01but fortunately, from Phil's point of view,

0:03:01 > 0:03:04John Bevan and Dave Richards were injured, so he came in

0:03:04 > 0:03:07for the first game in '76, which happened to be England at Twickenham.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10England was never an easy game,

0:03:10 > 0:03:15although it was a very lucky ground from my point of view.

0:03:15 > 0:03:20They're a very good pack of forwards and David Duckham

0:03:20 > 0:03:24and John Spencer in the backs, but I think probably their weakness

0:03:24 > 0:03:28was they could never settle on a half-back combination.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31I played with them against a lot of the English players

0:03:31 > 0:03:34and they should have been a better team than they were.

0:03:37 > 0:03:41The referee, the little Frenchman George Domercq,

0:03:41 > 0:03:46town mayor of Bellocq, and this is his third major international match.

0:03:46 > 0:03:50Mr Domercq has a reputation for keeping play moving,

0:03:50 > 0:03:52for playing the advantage law to its limit.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55And I'm sure everybody here hopes that's how he'll referee

0:03:55 > 0:03:57this match today.

0:04:02 > 0:04:04Wales, they have won the toss.

0:04:04 > 0:04:08It's Martin Cooper to kick off for England.

0:04:08 > 0:04:12And the match gets under way with Cooper's long kick,

0:04:12 > 0:04:14up to his opposite number, Phil Bennett.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22And what a heart-warming welcome for Phil Bennett

0:04:22 > 0:04:27as he made his first good, clean catch and his lovely touch kick.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29His partner there, Gareth Edwards,

0:04:29 > 0:04:33the most capped scrum-half in the world. 42 internationals.

0:04:33 > 0:04:35Tony Neary wins the first line-out.

0:04:35 > 0:04:37Beaumont drives on the peel.

0:04:37 > 0:04:39Back it comes to Lampkowski, to Cooper.

0:04:39 > 0:04:44Cooper, his kick half charged down by Bennett into the Welsh 25.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49John Williams saves for Wales.

0:04:54 > 0:04:56John Williams, who has the arm strength of a forward,

0:04:56 > 0:04:59but losing it. Lampkowski, Cooper, along the line.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02Maxwell, David Cook caught by Fenwick, gives it to Squires.

0:05:02 > 0:05:05Squires trying to run past JJ Williams. Good tackle, there.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08Kicked on by Maxwell.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18Bobby Windsor with the first throw-in of the match.

0:05:28 > 0:05:32And there's a chance for a try there but the referee was unsighted.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35The referee undecided.

0:05:35 > 0:05:39Peter Wheeler dashing through there, Andy Ripley there as well.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47And the large English contingent here calling for all the poundage

0:05:47 > 0:05:50that the English pack can put into this scrummage.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03Lampkowski tries to get the scrum straight.

0:06:03 > 0:06:05Wheeler wins his first strike.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08The Welshman managed to turn it, but good work by Ripley.

0:06:08 > 0:06:10Cooper, missing a man.

0:06:10 > 0:06:13This is a great chance for Hignell.

0:06:13 > 0:06:14Interception by Fenwick.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20England still as close as that.

0:06:22 > 0:06:28And a penalty for, I think, going round in an offside position.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37Found by Allan Martin. Edwards. Phil Bennett.

0:06:37 > 0:06:40The big man, Gravell.

0:06:40 > 0:06:43Gives it to Evans, the Swansea flank forward.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51Out there to Fenwick. Tries to give it to Cobner.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54Bobby Windsor has it and he's got Ripley as well.

0:06:54 > 0:06:57Cobner feeds it out to Bennett. What a marvellous catch.

0:06:57 > 0:07:01Out there to Gravell. The kick through meant for Gerald Davies.

0:07:01 > 0:07:05Hignell. Hignell caught there by John Williams the full-back.

0:07:05 > 0:07:09That's Lampkowski in front of the English posts.

0:07:09 > 0:07:13The red jerseys have massed quickly, there. Ball held.

0:07:13 > 0:07:16Wales not responsible for the stoppage.

0:07:20 > 0:07:24That's the England 25 and Martin Cooper signalling to his backs

0:07:24 > 0:07:26to move forward.

0:07:26 > 0:07:30See how England's backs are lined level with the rear feet

0:07:30 > 0:07:33of the scrummage, which is the offside line,

0:07:33 > 0:07:36knowing that Wales have the put-in and that their backs

0:07:36 > 0:07:39will probably attack. Mervyn Davies caught in the pick-up.

0:07:39 > 0:07:41Drive away, there, by Lampkowski.

0:07:41 > 0:07:43Maxwell out to Cook.

0:07:43 > 0:07:47Cook with Squires outside him. This is Squires. Over halfway.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50Running past Gareth Edwards. There's support, there.

0:07:50 > 0:07:53What a fine bit of running. Maxwell's up there, too.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56And eventually it's Phil Bennett who clears.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03And the crowd here really lapping up every moment of this

0:08:03 > 0:08:07tremendously exciting opening ten minutes or so.

0:08:09 > 0:08:13You can see the big men, there. Mervyn Davies, number eight.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16Further on you see Allan Martin, once he straightens up, number four.

0:08:16 > 0:08:196 ft 6, pretty near.

0:08:19 > 0:08:21And with a great jump capability

0:08:21 > 0:08:23but it was Mervyn Davies, Edwards, Bennett.

0:08:23 > 0:08:25They've missed out Fenwick.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28Get through to John Williams from Gravell.

0:08:31 > 0:08:35This is John Williams, who sets a new Welsh record today.

0:08:35 > 0:08:3834 caps, the most capped Welsh full-back,

0:08:38 > 0:08:42beating the great record of Billy Bancroft of Swansea

0:08:42 > 0:08:44way back in 1890-1900.

0:08:46 > 0:08:48And Wales have cut the line-out to four.

0:08:51 > 0:08:55Charlie Faulkner, number one, Geoff Wheel, Allan Martin, Mervyn Davies.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58Great jump by Martin. Edwards.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01Gives it to Graham Price. Price, what a good move!

0:09:03 > 0:09:07And there you saw the aggression of those Pontypool forwards,

0:09:07 > 0:09:11much to the liking of the Welsh section of the crowd.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13Graham Price, number three, the tighthead prop,

0:09:13 > 0:09:16getting to within a couple of yards

0:09:16 > 0:09:18of the English line.

0:09:22 > 0:09:25Bobby Windsor, one of the seven British Lions

0:09:25 > 0:09:27in the Welsh side, throwing in.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30Meant for Mervyn Davies.

0:09:30 > 0:09:34Cobner was going through, Lampkowski got in well, too.

0:09:42 > 0:09:44The whole of Wales calling for a little bit extra, here.

0:09:44 > 0:09:46It's England's put-in.

0:09:46 > 0:09:51Wales probably opting for an eight-man shove or for a turn.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56It certainly is very dangerous for the English

0:09:56 > 0:09:58because there's their goal line.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00You can see the rear feet,

0:10:00 > 0:10:03erm, Ripley's feet are only a metre away.

0:10:03 > 0:10:05Oh, it's a score, there!

0:10:05 > 0:10:07What a tragedy for the English,

0:10:07 > 0:10:10but what a bit of quick thinking by Gareth Edwards.

0:10:15 > 0:10:18And Gareth Edwards the toast of Wales at this moment.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23It really all looked so simple.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26You can see how the ball stuck there, and Gareth Edwards,

0:10:26 > 0:10:28who needs no second invitation,

0:10:28 > 0:10:31was over in a second with that great strength of his.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37Ripley trying to hold it in to catch someone offside.

0:10:37 > 0:10:40Lampkowski straight back to Hignell.

0:10:41 > 0:10:44The catch there by Gareth Edwards,

0:10:44 > 0:10:48and it was a penalty for a mile offside.

0:10:48 > 0:10:50George Domercq, the referee, of course,

0:10:50 > 0:10:53waiting for the possible advantage, you never know,

0:10:53 > 0:10:54Edwards might have got it away

0:10:54 > 0:10:57and someone might have run and scored a try.

0:10:57 > 0:10:59But they didn't.

0:10:59 > 0:11:06Allan Martin from about 45, 45 metres.

0:11:13 > 0:11:17Martin hit it well, looks good. It is good.

0:11:28 > 0:11:32No wonder those Welshmen are absolutely delighted,

0:11:32 > 0:11:37because Wales have suddenly stretched ahead by 9-0

0:11:37 > 0:11:40with 20 minutes of the first half over.

0:11:43 > 0:11:44Cooper restarts.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50Fran Cotton in there, but Allan Martin offside.

0:12:00 > 0:12:06And Alastair Hignell asked to try another penalty goal,

0:12:06 > 0:12:09and I suppose at this stage, Welsh hearts are very happy indeed,

0:12:09 > 0:12:12and it will take a really good goal kick like this

0:12:12 > 0:12:14to lift England just a little bit.

0:12:14 > 0:12:18Those were two real hammer blows within four minutes by the Welshmen.

0:12:20 > 0:12:24And it's astonishing how one really good goal kick

0:12:24 > 0:12:28can lift the confidence of a side.

0:12:28 > 0:12:30CROWD SINGS

0:12:30 > 0:12:32Although Alastair Hignell having to kick through

0:12:32 > 0:12:35this great volume of song.

0:12:35 > 0:12:37Hignell.

0:12:37 > 0:12:40Oh, long and far! What a goal!

0:12:49 > 0:12:53Bobby Windsor checking up every time on the signal.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00Allan Martin beats Wilkinson to it,

0:13:00 > 0:13:03but Tony Neary makes a great break through.

0:13:03 > 0:13:06What a drive by the English skipper. Great control of the ball.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09In goes Peter Wheeler. Wheeler setting it up beautifully.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12Lampkowski to Cooper, to Maxwell, to Cooke. Out to Squires.

0:13:12 > 0:13:14Squires has Hignell outside him.

0:13:14 > 0:13:17Hignell, almost up to the 25.

0:13:17 > 0:13:19Tackled by Bennett. Inside there to Keyworth.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22What a move by England, and great cover by the Welsh.

0:13:29 > 0:13:31Peter Squires the injured player,

0:13:31 > 0:13:34and this will be disappointing for England

0:13:34 > 0:13:37if he has two retire altogether,

0:13:37 > 0:13:39because he's snapped up a good few tries,

0:13:39 > 0:13:42seven altogether in international matches.

0:13:42 > 0:13:44Peter Squires of Harrogate and Yorkshire,

0:13:44 > 0:13:49and England a man short as Phil Bennett lifts it high to Hignell.

0:13:49 > 0:13:54Hignell in. Evans takes it on. Feeds out to Gravell. Gerald Davies.

0:13:54 > 0:13:56Davies trying to come inside Duckham.

0:13:56 > 0:13:59Good tackle by Duckham, and a touchdown by Lampkowski.

0:14:02 > 0:14:05Number 16, the replacement, is Peter Preece of Coventry,

0:14:05 > 0:14:08who's no stranger to the international arena.

0:14:08 > 0:14:11This will be his 12th international match.

0:14:13 > 0:14:18There are the boys at the tail, Mervyn Davies and the big man,

0:14:18 > 0:14:20Ripley, marking each other, great rivals.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23Lampkowski tackled there by Mervyn Davies.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26Oh, what a great bit of number eight play that was,

0:14:26 > 0:14:30the tackle and the robbing, and the making the ball available.

0:14:30 > 0:14:32Gareth Edwards again.

0:14:37 > 0:14:40Gareth Edwards seems to have a road map of every ground

0:14:40 > 0:14:45in the British Isles, showing him little spaces in between the bodies.

0:14:45 > 0:14:46Once again, an Edwards kick

0:14:46 > 0:14:49puts the pressure on England.

0:14:49 > 0:14:54The hooker throwing in, of course, is really like an extra flank forward.

0:14:54 > 0:14:56You see Peter Wheeler there. When he throws in,

0:14:56 > 0:14:58if Wales gets the ball,

0:14:58 > 0:15:01he's got the shortest cut, really, to the Welshman.

0:15:10 > 0:15:13The first bad pass from Lampkowski.

0:15:16 > 0:15:18Oh, great scrummage thrust by England.

0:15:18 > 0:15:21Nonetheless, from Mervyn Davies to Edwards, to Bennett, to Fenwick.

0:15:21 > 0:15:24They've missed out John Williams, the full-back. JJ.

0:15:24 > 0:15:25This is John Williams now.

0:15:25 > 0:15:30Can John Williams score his third try against England? Yes, he can!

0:15:36 > 0:15:40It all came from this feed by Mervyn Davies.

0:15:40 > 0:15:42And then the slick passing,

0:15:42 > 0:15:45and the crucial pass was this one here by Fenwick,

0:15:45 > 0:15:48missing out JPR Williams and giving it to JJ.

0:15:48 > 0:15:53Then did you see that marvellously improvised pass inside by JJ?

0:15:53 > 0:15:57And this is JPR, who used all of his 14 stones

0:15:57 > 0:15:59and his acceleratory power to get there.

0:16:01 > 0:16:04A real battle between those two hefty young giants

0:16:04 > 0:16:06standing number two in the lineout.

0:16:06 > 0:16:10Geoff Wheel. There's Billy Beaumont, with the sideburns.

0:16:10 > 0:16:12Two great, hefty lads they are,

0:16:12 > 0:16:15and they get that fast ball that's so difficult to control.

0:16:17 > 0:16:19Edwards.

0:16:19 > 0:16:20David Duckham.

0:16:24 > 0:16:29Not a great pass. Maxwell in trouble. Cooke as well. That's Peter Preece.

0:16:31 > 0:16:32Back goes Phil Bennett.

0:16:39 > 0:16:42Yes, they'd love that one down at Stradey.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45Phil Bennett marvellous in that cover position

0:16:45 > 0:16:47and absolutely secure with the kick.

0:16:56 > 0:17:01England using the tail. Ripley getting it to Beaumont.

0:17:03 > 0:17:05Trying to tie in the Welsh flankers.

0:17:09 > 0:17:12And again going round, I think, on the wrong side.

0:17:21 > 0:17:25Once again, then, a chance for Alastair Hignell

0:17:25 > 0:17:30to repeat his feat of the earlier stages with his penalty goal.

0:17:42 > 0:17:44Hignell...

0:17:44 > 0:17:46Long, far, drifting in.

0:17:46 > 0:17:49Oh, another beauty!

0:17:53 > 0:17:54Hignell.

0:17:57 > 0:17:59WHISTLE

0:17:59 > 0:18:03The referee's whistle has gone for half-time.

0:18:03 > 0:18:08And Wales have reached this interval stage leading 15-6

0:18:08 > 0:18:12having had the satisfaction of scoring two very good tries.

0:18:12 > 0:18:15One an opportunist affair and the other one created.

0:18:18 > 0:18:19We just got together and said,

0:18:19 > 0:18:22we've weathered the storm, the first 20 minutes.

0:18:22 > 0:18:25We're in the lead now, Albeit by not a great margin.

0:18:25 > 0:18:29Let's up our game second-half and finish them off, basically.

0:18:29 > 0:18:33Erm, and, so Merv was a man of very few words,

0:18:33 > 0:18:38but he tended to lead by example, and we just followed him, and erm...

0:18:38 > 0:18:40As they say, the rest is history.

0:18:40 > 0:18:41HE LAUGHS

0:18:41 > 0:18:45Phil Bennett, then, starts the second half.

0:18:46 > 0:18:48Charlie Faulkner tries to collect it in.

0:18:57 > 0:19:02I'm sure Tony Neary made the point to the English side that they

0:19:02 > 0:19:05need an early score, really, to bring them right back into this match.

0:19:05 > 0:19:08Lampkowski to Cooper.

0:19:08 > 0:19:10Cooper angling the kick,

0:19:10 > 0:19:13but John Williams the full-back well positioned.

0:19:14 > 0:19:18That one through the gap and Cooper there covering his own...

0:19:18 > 0:19:21not very good kick.

0:19:21 > 0:19:23Hignell himself coming up to help as well.

0:19:28 > 0:19:29Wheeler throwing.

0:19:29 > 0:19:32Lampkowski taking them on again, this is his forte.

0:19:32 > 0:19:35Cooper almost through on the crash ball.

0:19:35 > 0:19:37Mervyn Davies rescuing again.

0:19:37 > 0:19:40Evans the flanker out to Cobner.

0:19:40 > 0:19:43Cobner feeds on there to Edwards. Great stuff by Wales.

0:19:43 > 0:19:45Fenwick, JJ Williams.

0:19:46 > 0:19:50JJ Williams, will he score another kick-ahead try?

0:19:53 > 0:19:56Hignell again saving for England.

0:19:56 > 0:20:01But JJ Williams showing how absolutely lethal he is...

0:20:03 > 0:20:06..in the narrow space and with that deft little chip kick of his.

0:20:06 > 0:20:10It's brought him so many tries. He really is a past master at that art.

0:20:12 > 0:20:16Gareth Edwards trying to get them straight.

0:20:18 > 0:20:21Bobby Windsor has won the strike. Mervyn Davies holding it in.

0:20:22 > 0:20:24He's going for the pick-up, but the boot got to it.

0:20:24 > 0:20:28Edwards to Phil Bennett. That's Gravell, the big Llanelli centre.

0:20:28 > 0:20:32Trevor Evans the Swansea flank forward.

0:20:32 > 0:20:35Edwards, there must be a score here. Fenwick.

0:20:37 > 0:20:39Fenwick trying to charge his way over.

0:20:41 > 0:20:44And it's back again to Gareth Edwards.

0:20:44 > 0:20:47Edwards held out just a yard short.

0:20:49 > 0:20:54One thrust after another by the Welshman. And superb English defence.

0:20:54 > 0:20:56They really blocked the gaps there.

0:21:02 > 0:21:06England again showing excellent scrummage control.

0:21:06 > 0:21:10This front row is very powerful. Lampkowski to Cooper.

0:21:10 > 0:21:13Cooper through into space. In comes John Williams.

0:21:15 > 0:21:19John Williams would make a marvellous flank forward, I must say.

0:21:19 > 0:21:23Was a great thrust. See how the ball is made available.

0:21:23 > 0:21:27Evans the flanker caught by Ripley. In goes Lampkowski.

0:21:29 > 0:21:33This is Peter Preece, out to Cooper. Cooper to Cooke.

0:21:33 > 0:21:36Cooke gives it to Maxwell. Maxwell half through.

0:21:36 > 0:21:40David Duckham was outside him on halfway.

0:21:40 > 0:21:42Gives it to Cooke.

0:21:42 > 0:21:44Cooke coming inside, showing great resolution

0:21:44 > 0:21:46in his first international.

0:21:50 > 0:21:53Tremendous roar from the England support here.

0:21:54 > 0:22:01They realise that an England try would cut the gap dramatically.

0:22:01 > 0:22:04And they enjoyed that little bit of neat play by the English

0:22:04 > 0:22:06midfield and outside.

0:22:08 > 0:22:12And those sides have just got the 15 minutes left.

0:22:13 > 0:22:15Wales know that one more score would seal it.

0:22:15 > 0:22:18England know that one more score would give them

0:22:18 > 0:22:21great heart for the concluding stages.

0:22:21 > 0:22:25Tony Neary stood off that scrummage in a sort of stand-off position.

0:22:25 > 0:22:29Now Lampkowski has stayed clear, and there's his service to Cooper.

0:22:29 > 0:22:32Oh, and the missed field there and the pick-up by Bennett

0:22:32 > 0:22:34and a real chance for JJ Williams.

0:22:34 > 0:22:36Who's going to get there first?

0:22:36 > 0:22:39It's going to be David Duckham. That was a great chase.

0:22:51 > 0:22:55The Welsh forwards almost destroying that one, but not quite.

0:22:55 > 0:22:57Lampkowski, Cooper.

0:22:57 > 0:22:59Oh, what a ricochet for Peter Preece!

0:22:59 > 0:23:05Out there to Maxwell. Maxwell getting clear. It's Maxwell and David Cooke.

0:23:05 > 0:23:07And back goes Phil Bennett.

0:23:12 > 0:23:16Andy Maxwell perhaps kicking just a couple of yards too far.

0:23:16 > 0:23:18If it had stayed short of the line

0:23:18 > 0:23:20he might have had more chance.

0:23:25 > 0:23:28Bennett with a drop-out. Beautiful kick.

0:23:28 > 0:23:31Up goes Bob Wilkinson as he's tackled there by Graham Price.

0:23:31 > 0:23:36But the referee deciding that Graham Price had tackled Wilkinson

0:23:36 > 0:23:38who wasn't in possession.

0:23:41 > 0:23:45There will be a lot of argument about the likes of that because, you know,

0:23:45 > 0:23:47you go in for the tackle, I think,

0:23:47 > 0:23:49assuming that the fellow has the ball.

0:23:49 > 0:23:52And if he doesn't catch it, of course, he tends to be knocked over.

0:23:52 > 0:23:56But it's a penalty to England and a lot of the crowd whistling

0:23:56 > 0:24:01because I think they'd rather see England going for the try.

0:24:02 > 0:24:03Hignell.

0:24:05 > 0:24:06That looks better, and it is.

0:24:08 > 0:24:1115-9, then, for Wales.

0:24:12 > 0:24:16With the four-point try, of course, that means that England just need

0:24:16 > 0:24:18one try and a goal to draw level.

0:24:18 > 0:24:20They haven't long.

0:24:22 > 0:24:24Wales within 10, 12 yards.

0:24:25 > 0:24:28Leading there by six points.

0:24:28 > 0:24:30And almost into injury time.

0:24:33 > 0:24:36Edwards goes to stand-off. Now it's Bennett.

0:24:36 > 0:24:40JPR the full-back, is he going to get his second try?

0:24:40 > 0:24:43Oh, what a killer blow for the Welshman!

0:24:43 > 0:24:46JPR Williams the full-back scores the try

0:24:46 > 0:24:48that must sew it up for Wales.

0:24:51 > 0:24:56That's his fourth try for Wales against England.

0:24:56 > 0:24:591970, '72 and two today.

0:25:02 > 0:25:05And he appeared from absolutely nowhere.

0:25:05 > 0:25:07Notice him coming in there.

0:25:07 > 0:25:10Notice how he runs across from left to right

0:25:10 > 0:25:12and takes the little scissors pass.

0:25:12 > 0:25:15And how he straightened through a gap as wide as a barn door

0:25:15 > 0:25:18and just kept charging on.

0:25:18 > 0:25:20His strength eventually took him over

0:25:20 > 0:25:23despite a tremendous effort by David Duckham.

0:25:24 > 0:25:29That was a great try. And Fenwick puts the finishing touch to it

0:25:29 > 0:25:31by kicking the conversion,

0:25:31 > 0:25:34his third successful kick of the day.

0:25:37 > 0:25:38Gareth Edwards.

0:25:41 > 0:25:42WHISTLE

0:25:42 > 0:25:47The referee's whistle goes for the end of the match.

0:25:47 > 0:25:51And Wales have stretched away to that handsome victory.

0:25:51 > 0:25:54by 21-9.

0:25:54 > 0:25:57Their biggest victory ever here at Twickenham.

0:25:57 > 0:25:59The previous best was 12-3.

0:26:02 > 0:26:04We have the try scorers of the match here.

0:26:04 > 0:26:07JPR Williams got a couple for Wales and Gareth Edwards.

0:26:07 > 0:26:11John, look, have you taken medical advice on your face today?

0:26:11 > 0:26:12Let's have a look.

0:26:12 > 0:26:15It's not a very pretty sight, I'm afraid, Frank.

0:26:15 > 0:26:16I think I'm getting a bit like...

0:26:16 > 0:26:20I'll be renamed the Henry Cooper of rugby. I seem to be cutting easily.

0:26:20 > 0:26:22This side, of course, that's last week's.

0:26:22 > 0:26:24That's last week. I'm trying to hide it.

0:26:24 > 0:26:26I've had those stitches out today after the game.

0:26:26 > 0:26:28I collected a couple on the other side.

0:26:28 > 0:26:31So I'm not having the best of luck at the moment

0:26:31 > 0:26:34although I was quite pleased with a couple of tries today.

0:26:35 > 0:26:38The victory that day at Twickenham was the first step towards

0:26:38 > 0:26:43a quadruple Triple Crown and paved the way to a Grand Slam season.

0:26:43 > 0:26:47They followed it with a comfortable win against Scotland in Cardiff.

0:26:47 > 0:26:51Trefor Evans. Does what he did against the Scots last year.

0:26:53 > 0:26:55And then they piled on the points

0:26:55 > 0:26:57during a record win over Ireland in Dublin.

0:26:57 > 0:27:00Space there, Edwards, will he get that record try?

0:27:00 > 0:27:03Has he got it? It's given.

0:27:03 > 0:27:06Gareth Edwards with his 18th try.

0:27:06 > 0:27:08It's a penalty.

0:27:08 > 0:27:12That result set up a tantalising finale against France which

0:27:12 > 0:27:14included another memorable JPR moment.

0:27:16 > 0:27:20John Williams puts it in to touch at the corner flag.

0:27:24 > 0:27:28# Ain't no stopping us now... #

0:27:28 > 0:27:32But it showed what a great side we were at that time

0:27:32 > 0:27:34and that we were able to absorb pressure.

0:27:34 > 0:27:36And a lot of the games that we won in the '70s

0:27:36 > 0:27:38were in the last 20 minutes of the game.

0:27:38 > 0:27:42And that, I think, showed our fitness, our skills,

0:27:42 > 0:27:46and our temperament as well, because nobody ever panicked.

0:27:46 > 0:27:49Even if we were losing, 20 minutes to go,

0:27:49 > 0:27:53there was an innermost belief amongst the players

0:27:53 > 0:27:57and as part of the team that we still could come out on top.
