0:00:12 > 0:00:17In 1994, the bitter war in the Balkans was still raging.

0:00:17 > 0:00:19Tony Blair became leader of the Labour Party,

0:00:19 > 0:00:21the Channel Tunnel opened,

0:00:21 > 0:00:26and in South Africa, Nelson Mandela was sworn in as president.

0:00:26 > 0:00:29At home in Wales, times were tough in the sporting world.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32The football team narrowly missed out on the '94 World Cup,

0:00:32 > 0:00:36while the rugby team was going through a period of mixed fortunes.

0:00:36 > 0:00:39Mike Rayer of Cardiff played through these uncertain times.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41The low point came in November '93,

0:00:41 > 0:00:45when they lost at home to Canada. A late Al Charron try,

0:00:45 > 0:00:48converted by Gareth Rees, gave the visitors a famous win.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53It was a good game to miss.

0:00:53 > 0:00:56The autumn of 1993 we lost to Canada,

0:00:56 > 0:00:59which was thankfully nothing to do with me, cos I was sat on the bench.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03It was obviously a huge shock at the time, it was probably

0:01:03 > 0:01:08difficult to take in the following weeks and months,

0:01:08 > 0:01:10there was a bit of time between that

0:01:10 > 0:01:13and when the Five Nations started, so obviously

0:01:13 > 0:01:18we had time to re-gather, and I guess it galvanised us to a certain extent.

0:01:18 > 0:01:21The man responsible for turning Wales' fortunes around

0:01:21 > 0:01:24was head coach Alan Davies.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27Now in his third year of the job, he was beginning to feel the heat.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29He came in during the World Cup,

0:01:29 > 0:01:31and we weren't sure how long he was going to stay,

0:01:31 > 0:01:34but I thought he brought a breath of fresh air with him,

0:01:34 > 0:01:40and he stayed for several seasons, rightly so.

0:01:40 > 0:01:43Rugby was just months away from turning professional,

0:01:43 > 0:01:47but in 1994, the amateur ethos was still very much in place.

0:01:47 > 0:01:51Used to train on a Monday evening, re-gather on a Wednesday,

0:01:51 > 0:01:54have a session Wednesday afternoon, couple of sessions Thursday,

0:01:54 > 0:01:58one session Friday, so, erm...yeah, the good old days really.

0:01:58 > 0:02:00Rayer was competing for the fullback slot

0:02:00 > 0:02:03with Swansea's Anthony Clement.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05A great rivalry, but a friendly one as well,

0:02:05 > 0:02:08we got on very well off the field as well,

0:02:08 > 0:02:12but it was great at the time, we kept pushing each other on,

0:02:12 > 0:02:15and obviously he got the nod for the Scotland game.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18With Clement selected to start, Rayer was on the bench.

0:02:19 > 0:02:23You never know at any stage what time you're going to come on,

0:02:23 > 0:02:28and unfortunately, Nigel Walker decided to tackle with his chin

0:02:28 > 0:02:32rather than his shoulders, and I was lucky enough to get on the pitch.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38Neil Jenkins gets the game under way,

0:02:38 > 0:02:42to that great roar from this huge crowd.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46And Scotland immediately pushed off that ball, but it went forward.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49A Welsh hand knocked it forward,

0:02:49 > 0:02:50but it looked very loose,

0:02:50 > 0:02:53and Wales seemed about to take advantage of it.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59Wales slightly the heavier, but as I say,

0:02:59 > 0:03:03today it's about technique and getting a good grip with the feet.

0:03:03 > 0:03:05Gavin Hastings in the stand-off position,

0:03:05 > 0:03:10that's a huge crossfield ball, taken on there very well by Ian Jardine.

0:03:14 > 0:03:16And that was the lay back by Shade Munro, good for a new cap

0:03:16 > 0:03:18to get into the game so quickly.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21It's one of those nightmare visions of international rugby,

0:03:21 > 0:03:24when the first high kick goes up and nobody is anywhere near catching it.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28Ten metres outside the Welsh 22.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32Moon gets a ball that's well protected.

0:03:34 > 0:03:37Clement, the fullback, good touch.

0:03:42 > 0:03:44REF BLOWS WHISTLE

0:03:44 > 0:03:47It looked to me as if a Welsh hand knocked that forward,

0:03:47 > 0:03:48and right away...

0:03:50 > 0:03:55Well, this is absolutely ridiculous, of course tension is high,

0:03:55 > 0:03:56passions are high,

0:03:56 > 0:04:01but that's the last thing you want to see on a rugby pitch.

0:04:01 > 0:04:06Iain Morrison comes in to try and settle people down,

0:04:06 > 0:04:08Neil Edwards took exception to something,

0:04:08 > 0:04:09and so did the rest of them.

0:04:12 > 0:04:17We've two French touch judges of course, Joel Dume and Didier Mene,

0:04:17 > 0:04:20both of them on their international panel.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23I think it's Garin Jenkins who attracted the attention,

0:04:23 > 0:04:25there's number two.

0:04:26 > 0:04:28He doesn't stop now.

0:04:34 > 0:04:38There's Shade Munro, of Glasgow High Kelvinside, the new cap in the side.

0:04:38 > 0:04:40Beautifully from Llewellyn,

0:04:40 > 0:04:45that's Nigel Davies, Davies caught by Turnbull, Scottish 22...

0:04:45 > 0:04:48Wonderful play by the inside-centre, Moon again,

0:04:48 > 0:04:50Jenkins - the drop goal...

0:04:50 > 0:04:54He was a bit late with it, Wainwright with the charge-down.

0:04:54 > 0:04:59Picked up by Nicol, Nicol caught by Walker and held on,

0:04:59 > 0:05:01it's a penalty in front of the Scottish posts.

0:05:04 > 0:05:06Neil Jenkins with the penalty.

0:05:06 > 0:05:07Straight through.

0:05:10 > 0:05:123-0 Wales lead.

0:05:16 > 0:05:18Ken Milne's throw, Munro got hands to it,

0:05:18 > 0:05:22that's Edwards sweeping and driving, Nicol, Chalmers...

0:05:24 > 0:05:26Oh, lovely run there by the fullback Gavin Hastings,

0:05:26 > 0:05:29coming off Jardine, inside the Welsh 22,

0:05:29 > 0:05:32another lovely ball for the Scots, Chalmers going...

0:05:32 > 0:05:34Chalmers half through.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37Deep inside the Welsh 22.

0:05:38 > 0:05:41That was a great drive by the Scots, Nicol once again,

0:05:41 > 0:05:45out there to Stanger, Stanger within seven, eight metres.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51And that was an awkward ball for the Scots, Llewellyn

0:05:51 > 0:05:53may have been offside.

0:05:53 > 0:05:57Craig Chalmers swapping direction at the last minute,

0:05:57 > 0:06:01breaks one tackle, Emyr Lewis with the saving tackle really,

0:06:01 > 0:06:04because on the right-hand side everything started to open up.

0:06:04 > 0:06:06Scotland decide to keep going the same way,

0:06:06 > 0:06:08and it's Stanger against Nigel Walker,

0:06:08 > 0:06:11I think Walker gets a flick there, in the face from a stud.

0:06:13 > 0:06:15Nigel Walker the injured player,

0:06:15 > 0:06:19this is the lad who took part in the 110m hurdles

0:06:19 > 0:06:24at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in '84, got to the semifinal.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27A late entry into international rugby

0:06:27 > 0:06:30but he scored a very good try against France at the end

0:06:30 > 0:06:32of last season in the Parc des Princes,

0:06:32 > 0:06:33and not a lot of people do that.

0:06:33 > 0:06:36But that looks like a concussive thing.

0:06:36 > 0:06:40And if that is so, the lad would have to stay off for three weeks.

0:06:42 > 0:06:43And meanwhile, Mike Rayer

0:06:43 > 0:06:46will be getting ready to come on to the pitch.

0:06:46 > 0:06:48- CHEERING - And indeed it is, Mike Rayer of Cardiff

0:06:48 > 0:06:50coming on for his 12th international.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53Another of the very versatile players,

0:06:53 > 0:06:55although he's normally the fullback.

0:06:57 > 0:07:01Neil Jenkins, the favourite son of Pontypridd at the moment.

0:07:01 > 0:07:02Edwards goes down.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06Ken Milne got it, Nicol, to Chalmers, this will be

0:07:06 > 0:07:10the high one across the forwards, but a loud blast for offside.

0:07:10 > 0:07:14And this is also eminently kickable, even on a day like this.

0:07:19 > 0:07:20Hastings then.

0:07:20 > 0:07:24He's pushed it wide again - oh, but he hasn't, it's come in!

0:07:24 > 0:07:27For a moment I thought it had gone past,

0:07:27 > 0:07:32but in fact, it's in, it's 3-3, and they've played almost 14 minutes.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38Moon, Jenkins, Davies.

0:07:41 > 0:07:42REF BLOWS WHISTLE

0:07:42 > 0:07:45That was Scott Quinnell who made the drive for Wales,

0:07:45 > 0:07:48but they went over the top and have been penalised.

0:07:50 > 0:07:53Think the problem there was isolation.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56All around he's got blue shirts, not a red shirt in sight,

0:07:56 > 0:07:59all because of slow, static ball from the second phase.

0:07:59 > 0:08:02Iain Morrison is the injured player,

0:08:02 > 0:08:05he's had a lot of trouble with knee injuries, in fact he's got

0:08:05 > 0:08:10little bolts and washers and things in his knee from away back.

0:08:10 > 0:08:12What a season he had last season,

0:08:12 > 0:08:14played in all four championship matches.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18And so Doddie Weir comes onto the field,

0:08:18 > 0:08:20and Scotland are lucky to have such an experienced player,

0:08:20 > 0:08:22because although he's only 23,

0:08:22 > 0:08:24this will be his 20th international match,

0:08:24 > 0:08:27and it gives Scotland an extra line-out option.

0:08:32 > 0:08:35That was done by Emyr Lewis near the front, Nigel Davies,

0:08:35 > 0:08:40out to Hall, Rayer's angle of running good, up to halfway,

0:08:40 > 0:08:42taking it back to his forwards.

0:08:42 > 0:08:48Out there to Jenkins, Jenkins out to Hall, Hall going all the way,

0:08:48 > 0:08:50very good tackle by Wainwright.

0:08:50 > 0:08:54Scotland's 22, Moon goes, very unlucky to trip there,

0:08:54 > 0:08:57Emyr Lewis drives on, caught by Turnbull.

0:08:57 > 0:09:00A great bit of Welsh rugby, and it's not finished yet.

0:09:00 > 0:09:02Along the line once again to Jenkins,

0:09:02 > 0:09:05to Rayer, Rayer to the fullback, Clement was in there.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08Wainwright knocked out the road, Moon once again,

0:09:08 > 0:09:12Jenkins switching, marvellous rugby this by Wales.

0:09:12 > 0:09:14Into the Scottish 22 once again,

0:09:14 > 0:09:16Ricky Evans got in there first for the Welshmen.

0:09:16 > 0:09:20Now it's Moon once again, and Ken Milne did the...

0:09:20 > 0:09:22BOOING

0:09:22 > 0:09:24Well, he did the necessary there for Scotland,

0:09:24 > 0:09:28but it's going to be a penalty to Wales for holding on.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32But that was a wonderful passage of Welsh play.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38A study in concentration, looking for rhythm, Neil Jenkins...

0:09:40 > 0:09:43It works.

0:09:43 > 0:09:47Everybody waited, they weren't sure, but it's 6-3 to Wales.

0:09:48 > 0:09:5027 minutes gone.

0:09:53 > 0:09:57That was nicely done by Edwards, but Wales pillaging well.

0:09:58 > 0:10:02They're foraging, they're pirating and they're succeeding.

0:10:07 > 0:10:11French touch judge has brought Patrick Robin over.

0:10:12 > 0:10:17Obviously seen a bit of foul play, and it looks as if it's a Scot,

0:10:17 > 0:10:20and Peter Wright is the man who's being talked to.

0:10:27 > 0:10:29Peter Wright just arriving from the right-hand side now

0:10:29 > 0:10:31Left-footed, in he goes.

0:10:31 > 0:10:33Clear-cut bit of stamping.

0:10:37 > 0:10:40They left it to Quinnell, Quinnell recovers it,

0:10:40 > 0:10:43he did well, the youngster. Was he held?

0:10:46 > 0:10:49Moon tackled there by Turnbull, a penalty to Wales.

0:10:51 > 0:10:54Offside against Derek Turnbull.

0:10:57 > 0:11:01A good bit of salvaging by Wales from a situation which went wrong.

0:11:01 > 0:11:04A set piece move between Scott Quinnell

0:11:04 > 0:11:05and Mike Hall came to nothing,

0:11:05 > 0:11:08but Wales recovered well and improvised well,

0:11:08 > 0:11:11and that's a major difference from their last outing where,

0:11:11 > 0:11:14if plan A didn't go well, they seemed to have no plan B,

0:11:14 > 0:11:16but that's excellent play, excellent recovery work

0:11:16 > 0:11:19by the Welsh, Derek Turnbull clearly offside.

0:11:19 > 0:11:21Jenkins again.

0:11:21 > 0:11:23Oh, it sneaked in very well.

0:11:24 > 0:11:29He hit it absolutely plum. Wales 9-3 ahead.

0:11:31 > 0:11:32Nine minutes to go to the break.

0:11:34 > 0:11:38Gareth Llewellyn at number four, opposite Shade Munro,

0:11:38 > 0:11:42but it was the old master Phil Davies who made a great jump there.

0:11:44 > 0:11:47Moon, Jenkins...

0:11:47 > 0:11:50that's a big one. Logan waits.

0:11:51 > 0:11:53Gavin Hastings.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57Oh, that's a huge lick he's given that one.

0:11:58 > 0:12:00There goes Mike Rayer.

0:12:00 > 0:12:01Just saves it.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06Anthony Clement, two fullback rivals together there,

0:12:06 > 0:12:09but team-mates today. Quick throw in.

0:12:10 > 0:12:14Nicely taken by Gregor Townsend, good thinking by the youngster.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16The drive on, with Rob Wainwright in the van.

0:12:16 > 0:12:20Almost up to the Welsh 22, Nicol going,

0:12:20 > 0:12:23Chalmers, change of kick that time.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26But the call and the mark by Emyr Lewis.

0:12:28 > 0:12:31Some people look upon Emyr Lewis as a bit of a bash,

0:12:31 > 0:12:35he's called Tarw - "The Bull", but he's a very good footballer,

0:12:35 > 0:12:36as you can see from that.

0:12:36 > 0:12:38Something of a kicker actually,

0:12:38 > 0:12:41one punt led to a try by Ieuan Evans against England,

0:12:41 > 0:12:44he dropped the goal to win Llanelli the cup final,

0:12:44 > 0:12:46and here he is making a mark and clearing into touch.

0:12:48 > 0:12:52And the Welsh forwards really thundering on,

0:12:52 > 0:12:54they're almost up to the Scottish 22.

0:12:54 > 0:12:57Now it's Moon, out to Jenkins, Davies to Hall,

0:12:57 > 0:13:01there's a real chance here, it goes to Rayer, Rayer going

0:13:01 > 0:13:07for the corner, Rayer still, help there by Perego, right on his elbow.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10Chance still for Lewis - he's caught.

0:13:11 > 0:13:14Back from Ricky Evans, Moon misses out

0:13:14 > 0:13:18Jenkins, Nigel Davies, Nigel Davies of Llanelli still,

0:13:18 > 0:13:20caught there by Ken Milne.

0:13:20 > 0:13:22They're 15 metres from the Scottish line,

0:13:22 > 0:13:26and a penalty to Wales in an eminently kickable position.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32Excellent driving play by the Welsh forwards.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34They need really quick ball here, it's just held up a fraction

0:13:34 > 0:13:39of a second there, but even so, it's going Mike Rayer's way.

0:13:39 > 0:13:43Great one-handed take, there it is.

0:13:43 > 0:13:45Perhaps he should have just transferred it to the hand

0:13:45 > 0:13:47and gone for the outside,

0:13:47 > 0:13:49but it's still excellent play by a fullback playing at wing.

0:13:51 > 0:13:54Grant Fox all over again.

0:13:54 > 0:13:56Jenkins straight and true.

0:13:56 > 0:14:00Four penalty goals by the 22-year-old,

0:14:00 > 0:14:03Wales are in the lead 12-3.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07Just to see us in a huddle there in the middle,

0:14:07 > 0:14:11having our half-time oranges as it was, was quite surreal really.

0:14:11 > 0:14:14But in many ways it was great - couple of minutes,

0:14:14 > 0:14:18I never tended to listen too much to what was going on,

0:14:18 > 0:14:22just focusing on my own job within the team

0:14:22 > 0:14:26and before you know it, the second half was under way.

0:14:26 > 0:14:30It really is, there's a real chance here now for Wales to open up.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33They're playing with immense confidence,

0:14:33 > 0:14:35wouldn't think they'd been beaten by Canada.

0:14:36 > 0:14:42And certainly seeking to reinstate themselves in pride and prestige.

0:14:42 > 0:14:46Again from Moon to Jenkins. Was he outside his 22?

0:14:46 > 0:14:48Back there goes Ken Logan.

0:14:50 > 0:14:54Logan's kick, taken by Jenkins.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58Thundering on, Scott Quinnell.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01He really is so fast for a big man, young Quinnell,

0:15:01 > 0:15:03only his second international.

0:15:05 > 0:15:10Pick up and drive by Lewis, they're almost up to Scotland's 22.

0:15:10 > 0:15:12Scotland have pinched it, Andy Nicol has kicked,

0:15:12 > 0:15:16but actually there was a chance to have handled there.

0:15:17 > 0:15:21Clement goes back. Once again a huge return.

0:15:22 > 0:15:26Gavin Hastings, he's going to open out to Wainwright.

0:15:26 > 0:15:29Wainwright felt the space was blocked,

0:15:29 > 0:15:33Townsend did well to take and give, Tony Stanger now,

0:15:33 > 0:15:35on to Burnell, Hastings

0:15:35 > 0:15:37- good tackle by Mike Rayer.

0:15:37 > 0:15:39He stopped the ball as well.

0:15:39 > 0:15:40REF BLOWS WHISTLE

0:15:43 > 0:15:50"Stay on your feet." Patrick Robin penalising Scotland for diving over.

0:15:54 > 0:15:57Turnbull threw quickly, but very well away to Jenkins,

0:15:57 > 0:16:02this is Hall, Hall straightening up, magnificent run by him!

0:16:02 > 0:16:05Up to the 22, tackled there by Townsend

0:16:05 > 0:16:08- look at the red jerseys arriving in such numbers!

0:16:08 > 0:16:14Out to Moon, the pick up by Jenkins, on to Lewis...

0:16:14 > 0:16:20and that is another beautifully manufactured kick by Emyr Lewis.

0:16:21 > 0:16:24As I say, he's such a skilled footballer.

0:16:25 > 0:16:29Neil Jenkins under pressure here, Wales are just shipping the ball on,

0:16:29 > 0:16:30but there's the change of angle,

0:16:30 > 0:16:32good acceleration off the mark by Mike Hall,

0:16:32 > 0:16:36and now he just seems to run out of support, he's looking for it

0:16:36 > 0:16:38and just can't get that final pass away,

0:16:38 > 0:16:40everybody a little bit distant from him.

0:16:41 > 0:16:46Nicely lobbed. Phil Davies, on to Perego, Quinnell batters on.

0:16:46 > 0:16:50They're up to within 10, 12 metres of Scotland's line.

0:16:50 > 0:16:53Moon again, out there to Phil Davies, Emyr Lewis,

0:16:53 > 0:16:55this is Jenkins...

0:16:55 > 0:16:58And that was a crucial tackle by Andrew Nicol.

0:17:00 > 0:17:05Jenkins almost home. Emyr Lewis, number six there.

0:17:05 > 0:17:09Once again, Turnbull getting in that time and got hands to it. Nicol...

0:17:11 > 0:17:15..Chalmers, great burst, Wainwright.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20This is the important bit here.

0:17:21 > 0:17:25Moon going, great run all the way by Moon,

0:17:25 > 0:17:28back inside to Ieuan Evans, just got hit with a high tackle

0:17:28 > 0:17:31but not deliberately, cos Ieuan Evans went down.

0:17:33 > 0:17:36On once again, Quinnell driving.

0:17:36 > 0:17:39They're within ten metres of Scotland's line.

0:17:39 > 0:17:42A chance here - Jenkins, Nigel Davies, Hall,

0:17:42 > 0:17:43out there to Clement,

0:17:43 > 0:17:45it's a marvellous try for Rayer!

0:17:45 > 0:17:50Mike Rayer the scorer, it was a brilliant score.

0:17:52 > 0:17:5717-3 Wales lead, 12 minutes of the second half gone,

0:17:57 > 0:18:02and that was beautifully created and marvellously finished.

0:18:02 > 0:18:06The whole of Cardiff Arms Park is on its feet here...

0:18:06 > 0:18:08for what was a great try.

0:18:08 > 0:18:11Just for a moment I thought Wales had taken the wrong option,

0:18:11 > 0:18:13but Scott Quinnell had the strength to set it up,

0:18:13 > 0:18:15and it was his drive that set it up for the three-quarters,

0:18:15 > 0:18:18Anthony Clement so nearly dropped it,

0:18:18 > 0:18:22but Mike Rayer, on as a sub, scoring his try.

0:18:22 > 0:18:25Douglas Wyllie is about to come on to the field,

0:18:25 > 0:18:27as Chalmers goes off injured.

0:18:33 > 0:18:36And Gregor Townsend has gone to stand-off for Scotland,

0:18:36 > 0:18:38Wyllie filling in at centre.

0:18:39 > 0:18:43Nicol, Townsend, it's quite a useful one,

0:18:43 > 0:18:46Wyllie slightly obstructed as he went for it.

0:18:48 > 0:18:52Ten metres outside the Welsh 22, Ken Milne feeds.

0:18:52 > 0:18:55Nicely out to Townsend, to Wyllie, Gavin Hastings drives.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59Ricky Evans in on the tackle there - that's the Welsh 22.

0:19:00 > 0:19:02Nicol again,

0:19:02 > 0:19:03Townsend with the drop goal!

0:19:05 > 0:19:07I don't think the referee was sure,

0:19:07 > 0:19:10he was very well away from the posts.

0:19:10 > 0:19:13Just have a look at this, he had plenty of room and time.

0:19:13 > 0:19:18Now, he didn't hit it quite right, it was, eh...

0:19:18 > 0:19:19Well, it looked a good one to me,

0:19:19 > 0:19:21should have been three points, I think.

0:19:23 > 0:19:27Jenkins...Doddie Weir, they weren't sure who was going to take it.

0:19:30 > 0:19:34Wainwright has managed to rescue it for the Scots, Nicol, Townsend...

0:19:36 > 0:19:38Nice bit of play by the Gala youngster.

0:19:44 > 0:19:48So, Scotland realising, as we come towards the last quarter

0:19:48 > 0:19:50of the match, that they need a score,

0:19:50 > 0:19:54and indeed they need a try and a conversion

0:19:54 > 0:19:58to really give them the feeling that they could pull this round.

0:19:58 > 0:19:59Kenny Milne got through.

0:20:01 > 0:20:04Nicol burrows. A penalty.

0:20:06 > 0:20:11Ken Milne is the link man. They're just looking for ruck ball.

0:20:11 > 0:20:14Now it's Nicol, on there to Wright.

0:20:17 > 0:20:23Nicol going, almost through, tackle there by Phil Davies.

0:20:23 > 0:20:25That's the Welsh goal line.

0:20:28 > 0:20:33And Wales have won a ball, as Mike Rayer feeds it out to Jenkins.

0:20:33 > 0:20:36And that was absolutely vital for Wales.

0:20:36 > 0:20:39How they pinched that ball, I'll never know.

0:20:43 > 0:20:46Scotland held that one better, on to Turnbull from Wainwright,

0:20:46 > 0:20:51pick up by Nicol, there's Townsend, there's an overlap to Hastings,

0:20:51 > 0:20:53back inside to Wainwright

0:20:53 > 0:20:56- marvellous tackle by Perego!

0:20:56 > 0:20:58And Tony Stanger tackled as well.

0:21:00 > 0:21:03Out from Nicol, penalty there by Phil Davies.

0:21:05 > 0:21:08He says, "I was retiring", but you're still offside.

0:21:09 > 0:21:11That's the best angle any outside-half

0:21:11 > 0:21:13has run onto the ball all day, Bill.

0:21:13 > 0:21:15Gavin Hastings then, he's scored

0:21:15 > 0:21:1758 points against Wales

0:21:17 > 0:21:19in eight matches,

0:21:19 > 0:21:22and he's got another three, he's struck that well.

0:21:24 > 0:21:25His second penalty of the day.

0:21:27 > 0:21:32Nicol again, Townsend, on to Jardine,

0:21:32 > 0:21:34well tackled by Nigel Davies,

0:21:34 > 0:21:38another ball for the Scots, Gavin Hastings on halfway,

0:21:38 > 0:21:40tackled by Rayer.

0:21:43 > 0:21:46And Phil Davies going in there, Turnbull held him,

0:21:46 > 0:21:48and Garin Jenkins took exception.

0:21:51 > 0:21:54A penalty for a punch, Scots have taken it quickly,

0:21:54 > 0:21:58Nicol may have gone the wrong way, Wales hadn't retired the ten metres.

0:22:01 > 0:22:04Townsend still.

0:22:04 > 0:22:09Townsend to Stanger, good acceleration, the drive on.

0:22:11 > 0:22:14Nicol, Townsend, missed out everybody to Wyllie,

0:22:14 > 0:22:19on to Jardine, inside the 22,

0:22:19 > 0:22:23he was held and it may be a penalty against him.

0:22:23 > 0:22:26Referee, is he waiting for a Welsh advantage?

0:22:28 > 0:22:29It's Nicol again,

0:22:29 > 0:22:33Townsend along the line to Jardine, Jardine half through,

0:22:33 > 0:22:37on to Townsend, Townsend to kick through, but it had gone forward.

0:22:41 > 0:22:44And one or two examples of Townsend's flaring pace

0:22:44 > 0:22:46in this match since he went to stand-off.

0:22:46 > 0:22:49Absolutely, ever since he went to replace Craig Chalmers

0:22:49 > 0:22:52the game has suddenly changed, and he's orchestrating things

0:22:52 > 0:22:56in the Scottish midfield, and it's looking very dangerous.

0:22:56 > 0:22:59Big hit there by the Welsh back row, knock forward,

0:22:59 > 0:23:02but Scotland look suddenly very dangerous.

0:23:04 > 0:23:06Wales have pirated once more.

0:23:06 > 0:23:12Moon, Jenkins, an overlap here, out to Hall, Ieuan Evans,

0:23:12 > 0:23:14and back there goes Douglas Wyllie.

0:23:18 > 0:23:21Think the crowd felt that Ieuan Evans was taken out.

0:23:21 > 0:23:23I think it was just the pass is delayed,

0:23:23 > 0:23:27the ball is so slippery they had to just delay the passes.

0:23:27 > 0:23:29I don't think there's a...

0:23:29 > 0:23:32Kenny Logan committed there, no late tackle.

0:23:35 > 0:23:37A fairly happy Welsh captain though.

0:23:38 > 0:23:42Three minutes to go, Wales deep inside Scotland's 22,

0:23:42 > 0:23:45Phil Davies goes charging on.

0:23:45 > 0:23:47A wonderful run there, the forwards are all up.

0:23:47 > 0:23:50And there's a drive over,

0:23:50 > 0:23:52the referee saw the ball going forward I think.

0:23:52 > 0:23:55But the Scots know they've been under pressure

0:23:55 > 0:23:57at the scrummage almost from the start.

0:23:57 > 0:24:03Moon however, out to Jenkins, Clement, super tackle by Wyllie.

0:24:04 > 0:24:07Moon was on again, and Moon to Jenkins,

0:24:07 > 0:24:09a try again for Rayer!

0:24:09 > 0:24:11Mike Rayer's second try of the match.

0:24:11 > 0:24:16That's the one that clinches it, 22-6 Wales lead,

0:24:16 > 0:24:22they've only a minute to go, and it was another superbly created try.

0:24:22 > 0:24:27The key is that they don't use the bashing run from first phase

0:24:27 > 0:24:28as the try-scoring thing,

0:24:28 > 0:24:31the key thing is to get quick second-phase possession.

0:24:31 > 0:24:34Anthony Clement, that's the pass that made it, out of the tackle.

0:24:34 > 0:24:37Nigel Davies has to wriggle a bit to make that ball available,

0:24:37 > 0:24:39but now the try is always on.

0:24:39 > 0:24:42Excellent ball from the first-phase situation,

0:24:42 > 0:24:44Mike Rayer, try number two.

0:24:46 > 0:24:47Jenkins...oh,

0:24:47 > 0:24:49it looks a very good kick indeed.

0:24:52 > 0:24:56Need I tell you? His fifth successful kick of the match.

0:24:56 > 0:24:5824-6 Wales lead.

0:25:01 > 0:25:05Meant for Weir, Nicol, Townsend, Jardine...

0:25:07 > 0:25:10Ian Jardine has taken it to the forwards virtually every time

0:25:10 > 0:25:12he's got the ball. Ken Milne, nicely out to Townsend,

0:25:12 > 0:25:15this is a chance here for Gavin Hastings.

0:25:15 > 0:25:18Great tackle by Neil Jenkins again,

0:25:18 > 0:25:20what a game the young stand-off has had today.

0:25:20 > 0:25:25That's the hoof on by Mike Rayer, back there goes Ken Logan.

0:25:26 > 0:25:31Logan again tackled by Neil Jenkins, look at the red jerseys there.

0:25:31 > 0:25:35Moon's got it, it's a chance for Wales again, Nigel Davies,

0:25:35 > 0:25:39he's kicked for Ieuan Evans, Gavin Hastings against Ieuan Evans!

0:25:39 > 0:25:43But Evans could well get there - he's scored!

0:25:44 > 0:25:49His 13th try for Wales, the captain is delighted.

0:25:49 > 0:25:53It was a superb score, because the kick was perfect.

0:25:53 > 0:25:56Two tries in about a minute-and-a-half,

0:25:56 > 0:26:0229-6 Wales lead, they've played two minutes into injury time.

0:26:02 > 0:26:05There's a happy captain for you.

0:26:09 > 0:26:11The key is whether Nigel Davies should have kicked,

0:26:11 > 0:26:14but I think Ieuan Evans was screaming for him to do it

0:26:14 > 0:26:18because he knows he's got the pace on anybody on the field.

0:26:18 > 0:26:20Great try for Ieuan Evans.

0:26:21 > 0:26:26The whistle goes for the end of the match, and Wales have won

0:26:26 > 0:26:33a thoroughly-merited victory by 29-6, with three magnificent tries.

0:26:34 > 0:26:38Just to get on the field is a great feeling,

0:26:38 > 0:26:41but to get over for two tries is superb.

0:26:41 > 0:26:43Because you'd warmed up for it in the first half with a

0:26:43 > 0:26:45little run on the other side.

0:26:45 > 0:26:47Yeah, I managed to get the ball in my hands a couple of times in the

0:26:47 > 0:26:49first half, I think it was the intention

0:26:49 > 0:26:51of the team starting out to

0:26:51 > 0:26:55get the ball to the wings and play a little bit from there.

0:26:55 > 0:26:58It wasn't as if...

0:26:58 > 0:27:01I was a bit cold out there, I tried to get involved as much as I could.

0:27:01 > 0:27:02It was Ireland up next,

0:27:02 > 0:27:05and this man scored all the points in a tight victory.

0:27:05 > 0:27:06Neil Jenkins!

0:27:06 > 0:27:08Yes, he does, gets there.

0:27:08 > 0:27:12We went on to play France, Scott Quinnell's game really, and it's

0:27:12 > 0:27:16the first time I can remember the crowd really playing a part.

0:27:16 > 0:27:17We used to try and block them out,

0:27:17 > 0:27:21but actually, on that day the crowd were amazing.

0:27:21 > 0:27:24Now then, one more pass? Yes, and he got it!

0:27:26 > 0:27:31Nigel Walker - just look at this!

0:27:31 > 0:27:35Oh, dear me! The place goes wild.

0:27:35 > 0:27:40Going on to play in a Grand Slam game against England at Twickenham

0:27:40 > 0:27:41was another memorable occasion.

0:27:45 > 0:27:48That first half they really blew us away,

0:27:48 > 0:27:51and they probably should have been more points ahead.

0:27:51 > 0:27:55Space here for de Glanville, great pace from de Glanville,

0:27:55 > 0:27:57what a try this will be!

0:27:57 > 0:28:01Rory Underwood, gloriously done by England.

0:28:01 > 0:28:04And yes, his mother was there.

0:28:04 > 0:28:09Suddenly there's a little movement, greater purpose,

0:28:09 > 0:28:14and gaps are opening, Ricky Evans, one more might do it...

0:28:14 > 0:28:16We dug deep, we came back strong.

0:28:16 > 0:28:22It was just through sheer belief and will of the team at that stage,

0:28:22 > 0:28:24we had great spirit there.

0:28:24 > 0:28:25It just wasn't enough.

0:28:27 > 0:28:30Not the best pass.

0:28:30 > 0:28:35Sensibly done, as some forwards get in a tangle, and that's it then,

0:28:35 > 0:28:39that's the end of the Five Nations Championship from 1994.

0:28:39 > 0:28:41It's been won by Wales.

0:28:41 > 0:28:45It's a shame when you look back, it's not a regret I suppose,

0:28:45 > 0:28:48but one occasion that perhaps got away from us.

0:28:48 > 0:28:51It would have been nice to be sitting here having actually

0:28:51 > 0:28:52achieved a Grand Slam,

0:28:52 > 0:28:55unfortunately we had to settle for the championship,

0:28:55 > 0:28:57which was kind of a bittersweet moment really,

0:28:57 > 0:29:00but nevertheless a great achievement for that team and that time.
