:00:22. > :00:27.Beware the Springboks are here, and have laid the gauntlet down.

:00:28. > :00:35.We try not to talk too much about it, I would rather walk the walk and

:00:36. > :00:40.talk the talk, you know. We will have all the weekend's rugby

:00:41. > :00:44.action, as the battle for Pro12 supremacy rages on.

:00:45. > :00:50.And we remember one of the most remarkable achievements in Welsh

:00:51. > :00:53.rugby history. All of New Zealand know about

:00:54. > :01:00.Newport, because they beat the all Blacks.

:01:01. > :01:07.Good evening and welcome to Scrum V. Jonathan Davies, Hugh Bennett and

:01:08. > :01:09.Shawn Hartley are all here to discuss the heartbreaking defeats

:01:10. > :01:13.against South Africa into a hopefully famous win next weekend.

:01:14. > :01:17.We will also have all the action and analysis from the Pro12, and we will

:01:18. > :01:23.begin with the Scarlets against Ulster.

:01:24. > :01:36.Ulster arrived at a blustery pitch on a six-game winning streak.

:01:37. > :01:43.Phil John War the skipper's armband for the Scarlets.

:01:44. > :02:04.Was it forward? I think so.

:02:05. > :02:09.This is one he can kick with his eyes closed, straight and true, no

:02:10. > :02:20.problem. That is a great break from Josh

:02:21. > :02:21.Turnbull up to the 22. Gareth Owen, one pass will do it for the

:02:22. > :02:27.Scarlets. The Ulster cover is a bit bare on

:02:28. > :02:40.that far side. It is a penalty.

:02:41. > :02:42.Penalty given, Steven Shingler is still going. They will come back for

:02:43. > :02:51.the penalty, though. Steven Shingler gives it a fair old

:02:52. > :02:56.whack. That is the best thing to do in the wind, no problem, 3-3.

:02:57. > :03:02.Now, can the Scarlets finally get over the line this time?

:03:03. > :03:09.They had success earlier with the old rolling maul.

:03:10. > :03:15.Ulster crumble and the Scarlets have got the first try.

:03:16. > :03:23.Thomas with a little dink through. Inside for Turnbull and this is a

:03:24. > :03:28.good chance for the Scarlets. Can Gareth Davies find support?

:03:29. > :03:50.It is a penalty, this could be a yellow card, it has to be.

:03:51. > :03:55.It was on David McIlwaine. No problem, and the Scarlets are up

:03:56. > :04:09.to 14. He was grabbed -- cropped then,

:04:10. > :04:23.wasn't he? He was cropped by Roger Wilson, that will be worth a yellow.

:04:24. > :04:29.Ulster are a man down, remember, now they have a chance to drive it.

:04:30. > :04:37.As long as they have monitored, the referee will be happy.

:04:38. > :04:44.The arm was out. Rob McCusker, the water boy, really

:04:45. > :04:53.cheering his forwards on. And he has nailed it. A great kick

:04:54. > :05:07.by Aled Thomas. To Amanda the players outstanding,

:05:08. > :05:13.and you cannot ask for more than that when you are playing against a

:05:14. > :05:16.quality team like Ulster. We got everything and controlled everything

:05:17. > :05:21.really welcome and we more than deserved result.

:05:22. > :05:30.Yes, Simon rightly lavishing praise on his players after escaping from

:05:31. > :05:34.jail last week against Zerbre that was significant.

:05:35. > :05:41.Yes, you would expect them to finish in the top four. They are toughing

:05:42. > :05:44.it out, really. The Scarlets forwards this year have really

:05:45. > :05:50.surprised everyone. The set pieces have been good with them. It is just

:05:51. > :05:53.a question of playing the game and the right areas and toughing it out

:05:54. > :05:58.and getting the result and getting off the field for a cup of tea or

:05:59. > :06:02.something! Yes, dreadful conditions across the

:06:03. > :06:06.UK and Ireland this weekend. The bread at ice played a part

:06:07. > :06:12.yesterday, but we have seen in the last few weeks the Scarlets'

:06:13. > :06:17.forwards asserting themselves in a way that is very untypical.

:06:18. > :06:22.Yes, we all know that the Scarlets can play an open and expansive title

:06:23. > :06:33.of ten, but this particular squad has to learn.

:06:34. > :06:36.Last night it was about the conditions and the forward play, and

:06:37. > :06:43.conditions dictated the style of play.

:06:44. > :06:48.Temani was named as a big player on the night, but it ironically was the

:06:49. > :06:51.old player, Phil John, who had a great game. He was the captain on

:06:52. > :06:57.the night and had a big, big game. It wasn't just in the loose. Watch

:06:58. > :07:01.the Scarlets, they had this one out style of play, playing around the

:07:02. > :07:05.corner. The gap Gareth Davies, looking for the short side playing

:07:06. > :07:10.against the grain the other way. That was very effective on the night

:07:11. > :07:15.with people like Jake Ball, who is coming to the fore. With the new

:07:16. > :07:19.scrum laws, they have been imposing themselves against the likes of John

:07:20. > :07:24.Afoa. We are starting to see driving more from the Scarlets, something

:07:25. > :07:28.they don't have a reputation for. This example as early on and leads

:07:29. > :07:31.to some points and ultimately manifests itself in them getting

:07:32. > :07:36.themselves over the line for the score. It is a great forward effort

:07:37. > :07:39.and a lot of credit to those boys and the coaches.

:07:40. > :07:45.Martyn Williams said a few weeks back that Phil John's form had put

:07:46. > :07:52.him on selection at the grand old age of 32. Are these guys benefiting

:07:53. > :07:55.from the new laws? Yes, Phil has reacted to the

:07:56. > :08:00.captaincy well, but my argued it would be that he is a veteran of the

:08:01. > :08:05.scrum and the laws suit him. The older guys love to play the new laws

:08:06. > :08:09.and he is there in the action now. You can see the knock-on effect on

:08:10. > :08:14.the rest of his game. Because they have changed the laws on the scrum

:08:15. > :08:19.he has confidence in the scrum. He has been a good player, but this

:08:20. > :08:22.year he has been brilliant. The scrum has been very aggressive from

:08:23. > :08:26.the Scarlets. It is bringing back the art of

:08:27. > :08:33.scrummaging. Some of the players playing

:08:34. > :08:37.professional rugby are used more to the kit and Jess, whereas he

:08:38. > :08:41.relishes the technical aspect. All of those skills from ten years ago

:08:42. > :08:43.he can bring back into the game! He has added a few more years into his

:08:44. > :08:47.career. Let's turn our attention to the big

:08:48. > :08:54.one, the South Africans have arrived in Cardiff this afternoon ahead of

:08:55. > :08:58.next Saturday's big Test. Last month they came agonisingly close to the

:08:59. > :09:01.rugby championship beating New Zealand but fell at the final

:09:02. > :09:02.hurdle. Next week they will look to take out their frustrations on Wales

:09:03. > :09:14.for sure. When the Springboks come to town, we

:09:15. > :09:24.all know what to expect - bullying, brutality and pain.

:09:25. > :09:32.We get brought up playing a hard, physical game. You need to be tough

:09:33. > :09:42.when it counts. Guys go into the game with a mindset like that. They

:09:43. > :09:45.are relying on you to step up your game, not just from a tactical and

:09:46. > :09:46.technical point of view, but from a physical one.

:09:47. > :09:50.You generate that confidence when you put the Springboks shirt over

:09:51. > :09:54.your head. It is almost a bullet-proof feeling when you put

:09:55. > :09:58.the green and gold over your head. Especially against the northern

:09:59. > :10:03.hemisphere sides, we do approach the game with a lot of confidence.

:10:04. > :10:06.But despite their unshakeable self belief, the Springboks, who have

:10:07. > :10:11.been training in Johannesburg this week, have more than a little

:10:12. > :10:15.respect for the next opponents. The thing that makes Wales such a

:10:16. > :10:20.difficult team to play is there are no witnesses there. They are a very

:10:21. > :10:25.balanced side. They have lot of good forwards, a lot of big backs, speed

:10:26. > :10:28.and skill. It is difficult to get a game plan going against them and

:10:29. > :10:31.they have a good kicking game, as well.

:10:32. > :10:38.They have won the Six Nations twice in a row. They were the dominant

:10:39. > :10:42.team. We are tapping very well and we know what is coming and the boys

:10:43. > :10:47.will be up for it. Whales are very physical, they have

:10:48. > :10:52.a very big pack. They have big wings, centres, you know, so it will

:10:53. > :10:55.be tough. The conditions, it will be raining, hopefully the roof will be

:10:56. > :10:59.closed at the stadium, but it will be physical.

:11:00. > :11:03.It doesn't matter what happened with the Lions. We believe we have grown

:11:04. > :11:07.as a team and this is a totally different challenge, different

:11:08. > :11:11.mindset in the way that you play. But they are a quality side, and we

:11:12. > :11:15.respect them. It will be a huge battle.

:11:16. > :11:20.The manager has been in charge for 21 games and are slowly putting his

:11:21. > :11:23.mark on the squad. South Africa's reputation as 1-dimensional bashers

:11:24. > :11:27.and kickers is receding. In the recent championship they scored more

:11:28. > :11:31.points per game and made more metres than any opponents. They are the

:11:32. > :11:35.most incisive, making more clean breaks per match than anyone else.

:11:36. > :11:38.Marry this with a more disciplined approach and we're looking at an

:11:39. > :11:42.altogether more sophisticated Africa.

:11:43. > :11:50.The old game plan has changed in the last couple of years. The manager

:11:51. > :11:55.came in in 2012 with his own set of ideas and principles. We have been

:11:56. > :12:03.stereotyped as a conservative playing side, kicking at the right

:12:04. > :12:07.times and playing for territory. If an opportunity comes around South

:12:08. > :12:13.Africa will take the opportunity now.

:12:14. > :12:16.You can definitely see the way it has changing the way we approach the

:12:17. > :12:20.game. There has been a lot more attacking intent even from deep in

:12:21. > :12:29.our own half. We have been scoring tries, especially against the all

:12:30. > :12:31.Blacks. It is looking well for South Africa in terms of the overall

:12:32. > :12:35.approach to them. Ultimately, it is the physicality

:12:36. > :12:40.that remains the calling card. Whales have their hard men of their

:12:41. > :12:43.own right now, who are every bit as fierce.

:12:44. > :12:46.These guys are enforcers in their own right, but this will be the

:12:47. > :12:53.first chance a lot of the Springbok players will have had against them.

:12:54. > :12:58.The first game away is at the home of Welsh rugby against a strong

:12:59. > :13:03.side, so you have to perform. The guys have to live up to it. We

:13:04. > :13:07.try not to talk too much about it, you -- we would rather walk the walk

:13:08. > :13:09.and talk the talk. You are not scared of Alan Jones

:13:10. > :13:19.then two we will see! Alun-Wyn Jones, he has become known

:13:20. > :13:26.as the enforcer but doesn't like that tag. Are you scared of him?

:13:27. > :13:30.I don't want to give too many cliches, but he is a natural leader

:13:31. > :13:34.of men and has the right to do so, as well. When he is in that role he

:13:35. > :13:37.is not afraid of putting the cat amongst the pigeons. If he thinks

:13:38. > :13:42.something is right for the team he will do it and wants the team to

:13:43. > :13:46.follow in. That is where he ends his respect. Anyone can say they are a

:13:47. > :13:56.leader of men, but they follow him. He is the right guy, maybe not

:13:57. > :13:59.captain on the field, but he is a leader of the guys and they will

:14:00. > :14:00.follow him. He is in that position because he has earned the right to

:14:01. > :14:02.be there. He is an intelligent bloke, an

:14:03. > :14:05.intelligent player. When he was made captain against

:14:06. > :14:10.Australia everyone was surprised. But they didn't know him. I thought

:14:11. > :14:14.he was a natural captain. He has been brilliant the last couple of

:14:15. > :14:18.years. Though he has not had the captain behind his name tag, he has

:14:19. > :14:23.been as much an influence as any of the captains.

:14:24. > :14:31.Knowing Alun-Wyn Jones personally, there is no one that will do that

:14:32. > :14:35.extra bit of analysis more. He gets respect, and when I say he

:14:36. > :14:39.is a natural leader of men, guys will naturally want to follow him.

:14:40. > :14:43.Let's bring this back to the box, we talked earlier about the narrow

:14:44. > :14:47.defeats in the last four times Wales have played them, losing by no fewer

:14:48. > :14:52.than five points. The last time was in the World Cup, 17-16 was the

:14:53. > :14:55.score, we could have beaten them but for a kick.

:14:56. > :14:59.Tell us about their brutality, the fact they are allegedly the toughest

:15:00. > :15:03.team to play against. Is that how you find them?

:15:04. > :15:08.Definitely. The guys even talk about it on the video themselves, they

:15:09. > :15:11.pride themselves on being big, physical men. They know that and

:15:12. > :15:15.elected to use it. It is not just physical, but mental. They like to

:15:16. > :15:22.go out and they are individuals in the squad. Look at the inclusion of

:15:23. > :15:27.some of the players. You will see them when they come out before the

:15:28. > :15:30.game, they are sticking their chests out, but during the game they are

:15:31. > :15:36.doing all the niggling things trying to wind people up.

:15:37. > :15:40.All of the legitimate stuff, and off the ball stuff?

:15:41. > :15:43.Exactly. Of course, they know their strengths, but it is about

:15:44. > :15:47.controlling what we do. That's what will win the World Cup. We know they

:15:48. > :15:52.will, you physically and when you up off the ball, but cogitate on your

:15:53. > :15:54.role, make sure you are doing your things right.

:15:55. > :15:58.As Michael concentrate on your role. They are going to run at us, they

:15:59. > :16:02.have different dye mentions to the game but at the end of the day the

:16:03. > :16:05.focus is one runners crossing the game line.

:16:06. > :16:11.I am glad you brought that up, because we talked about how the game

:16:12. > :16:17.has involved and they are perhaps a little more subtle and sophisticated

:16:18. > :16:23.than they used to be, but ultimately their game has changed.

:16:24. > :16:27.I spoke to Stephan blanch about how they are preparing. It is the first

:16:28. > :16:33.stop on the tour, don't forget. They want the tour off and running. A lot

:16:34. > :16:37.of the young guys are thinking about the World Cup. It will be a game of

:16:38. > :16:40.attrition. Warren Gatland takes pride in his word being physically

:16:41. > :16:43.fit and powerful so it will be a physical confrontation. I think the

:16:44. > :16:48.Springboks will come the only way they know how. We have some footage

:16:49. > :16:58.of them last autumn. It will be very direct from set pieces. They have

:16:59. > :17:05.called JP Peterson back on the wing. Just defensively, they have this

:17:06. > :17:14.sort of Greenwald that loses constant -- confidence, almost

:17:15. > :17:18.arrogance. They will take you down. Louw for me as one of the players at

:17:19. > :17:23.the heart of things. This is where they will push the scrum, they will

:17:24. > :17:27.drive it and you can see that Louw is at the heart of everything. Very

:17:28. > :17:29.direct, very physical and confrontational and it will be an

:17:30. > :17:33.epic first match. You could have taken those clips

:17:34. > :17:45.from any game in the last ten years. It is just the same. They will come

:17:46. > :17:49.and they will bully you. You And you don't have to be nasty, but you

:17:50. > :18:02.don't have to take a backward step. There are too many cameras now. But,

:18:03. > :18:12.there have to be aggressive. They have got a couple of new players. If

:18:13. > :18:21.the ball is slow, they will kick off it. They will not change their game,

:18:22. > :18:31.but they are very direct. In the World Cup, we should be on them. I

:18:32. > :18:37.think they are a better side now. Let us talk about Wales. The Welsh

:18:38. > :18:43.15 Margie picks itself. A few positions are up for grabs. Would

:18:44. > :19:01.you stand on that? It is a tough one. Dan Biggar is playing well. It

:19:02. > :19:05.is very difficult. It comes down to whether you want to play the whole

:19:06. > :19:17.scarlet in midfield. They all know each other. Whoever he picks, he's

:19:18. > :19:49.picking from form. I thought Dan did exceptionally well last season. I

:19:50. > :20:03.think he deserves a place. I would start with Dan. Maybe bring Rees on.

:20:04. > :20:15.I think Dan should start, I think you are right. The big talking point

:20:16. > :20:24.is probably with Alex Cuthbert out. Whoever we play, we are happy. We

:20:25. > :20:35.will talk a lot about this on extra time. Let us go back to the Pro12.

:20:36. > :20:39.The ospreys took on Munster. The highlight in a few moments. First,

:20:40. > :20:56.the blues against Treviso. Robert Barbieri was making his 100th

:20:57. > :20:59.appearance. The Cardiff Blues deprived of nine Welsh

:21:00. > :21:10.internationals. They were led by Josh Navidi. He has gone straight

:21:11. > :21:23.through the middle. Richard Smith arrives. Lewis Jones looks around.

:21:24. > :21:38.He tried to get the pass away. The Blues have a penalty. Gareth Davies.

:21:39. > :21:42.Like a banana, but safely. Good position for the Blues. Not the most

:21:43. > :21:46.comfortable of scrums. Andries Pretorius as well. Edging forward

:21:47. > :21:56.towards a Treviso try line. Lewis Jones waits patiently as the

:21:57. > :22:07.forwards take it on. The scrum-half gets it. Kristian Dacey is over. Sam

:22:08. > :22:24.Hobbs. That shows how strong the Windies.

:22:25. > :22:51.Matt Berquist. Two Michele Campagnaro. A superb

:22:52. > :23:00.Treviso try. Good-looking scrum for Treviso. Lewis Jones tries to drag

:23:01. > :23:17.him back. He has just lost it at the last second. Good pressure. Back

:23:18. > :23:26.comes Dafydd Hewitt. Lewis Jones to Dan Fish. Andries Pretorius is over

:23:27. > :23:30.in the corner. That is a great try. Oh, that is very harsh. Tobias

:23:31. > :23:51.Botes. Lovely running from Dan Fish. Lewis Jones waits. Sam Hobbs and

:23:52. > :23:58.Josh Navidi together go over. It puts the Blues back ahead.

:23:59. > :24:11.The wind was tough. What we managed was controlling the territory.

:24:12. > :24:33.The ospreys travelled to Munster with confidence.

:24:34. > :24:45.Good work by Lewis. They win a penalty. Matthew Morgan succeeds.

:24:46. > :25:10.The ospreys are back into it. He is over by the post. Was that a

:25:11. > :25:16.proper scrum? It was incomplete. I wonder what the decision will be

:25:17. > :25:23.this time. It is not a try, much to the crowd's dismay.

:25:24. > :25:29.Bishop again. Richard Fussell in support. That is a Munster try line

:25:30. > :25:41.in the background. He is about to meet a short. What

:25:42. > :25:46.will a decision be? Did they cross the line? Let us have another look.

:25:47. > :26:05.I think there is a double movement there. Yes, the referee confirms

:26:06. > :26:17.that. They move it up to the left. Possibly a late tackle the. Hanno

:26:18. > :26:25.Dirksen. This is the substitute, JJ Hanrahan. That opens it up. We are

:26:26. > :26:33.into the last few seconds of this game. Can the Ospreys salvage

:26:34. > :26:41.something from it? A penalty kick is coming, I think. Matthew Morgan, in

:26:42. > :26:50.what will be the last kick of the game. Can he kelly teen? Yes, he

:26:51. > :26:57.can. Munster will stay top of the table.

:26:58. > :27:05.Perhaps we have picked something up. Whether we deserved it, I don't

:27:06. > :27:15.know. Not much will be on display. Conditions played a part. A losing

:27:16. > :27:21.bonus point. I think it will be precious. You have two pick-up point

:27:22. > :27:27.anywhere. Particularly with Munster. Remember, the Ospreys have lost a

:27:28. > :27:42.lot of players to the internationals. I would be thinking,

:27:43. > :27:58.I don't fancy that fixture. It is a tough time for the Welsh region. If

:27:59. > :28:05.you look at the other side, it is tricky. When I looked at the Blues

:28:06. > :28:11.sheet, with all the youngsters, and then the Italians, there have

:28:12. > :28:24.realised, you have to tough it out a little bit. The Blues will be happy

:28:25. > :28:31.that they did have a young squad. They will be very happy. When you

:28:32. > :28:38.played the way to a weakened side, what is the mentality of a younger

:28:39. > :28:47.set of players? Do you just go thinking, damage limitation? It is a

:28:48. > :28:54.time for younger guys to put their hands up and claim their position.

:28:55. > :29:04.Maybe from a coach's point of view, you have to go there and try to pick

:29:05. > :29:14.up that bonus point. Great credit to the guys on the team. Woman onto the

:29:15. > :29:24.premiership now and a round-up. - - moving on.

:29:25. > :29:35.They came from behind to secure a win.

:29:36. > :29:42.Swansea were hoping for a win. Brian Thomas's yellow card proved too much

:29:43. > :29:56.for the visitors. Newport got a much-needed win

:29:57. > :30:07.yesterday, piling on the pressure from start to finish. One yellow

:30:08. > :30:21.card and one red card further added to the misery for Bridgend.

:30:22. > :30:29.Crisp and field scored the first here. Carmarthen's lead at the top

:30:30. > :30:50.is further cemented. The back to the Pro12 and highlights

:30:51. > :30:54.of fried 's game between dragons and Leinster.

:30:55. > :30:59.The defending champions arrived at Rodney Parade without 17 of Irish

:31:00. > :31:03.internationals. The Dragons made eight changes to

:31:04. > :31:04.the team that lost to the Ospreys, with Lewis Evans captaining the

:31:05. > :31:20.side. John Cooney was then placed back

:31:21. > :31:26.under pressure and then taken by Richie Rees.

:31:27. > :32:05.Dominic Ryan was the one who came down in a deep -- in a heap.

:32:06. > :32:15.REFEREE: that was dangerous play and it's a yellow card.

:32:16. > :32:22.But to be aggressive, not passive. John Cooney tries to do. Under.

:32:23. > :32:29.There is an injured man, Leinster are a man short.

:32:30. > :32:45.It could be what -- it could well be Aaron Dundon who led that charge.

:32:46. > :32:50.Noel Reid - they are just starting to look a little bit more

:32:51. > :32:55.threatening. The Dragons have not been able to do

:32:56. > :32:59.numbers. Zane Kirchner, men outside, and Noel

:33:00. > :33:10.Reid canters through. That is a very, very well worked try.

:33:11. > :33:23.The crowd are celebrating, but it was early, because the whistle had

:33:24. > :33:43.gone, clearly. Pressure from John Cooney, again it

:33:44. > :33:48.is available. It has spilled out and the chance has gone on for Dragons.

:33:49. > :33:54.Leinster only have to clear the decks, John Cooney does, and the

:33:55. > :33:59.Dragons have gone mighty, mighty close.

:34:00. > :34:02.The guys are very disappointed, they have worked hard I have thanked them

:34:03. > :34:10.for their effort and that is all you can ask. It is up to you how well

:34:11. > :34:16.you play, and unfortunately unforced errors was what did for us tonight,

:34:17. > :34:21.which was unfortunate. Elsewhere this weekend, Glasgow got

:34:22. > :34:25.back to winning ways with a hard-fought win over Connacht at the

:34:26. > :34:40.sports ground, and it backing behind to beat Zebre at Murrayfield.

:34:41. > :34:48.Sean, we were at Rodney Parade on Friday night, and the manager looked

:34:49. > :34:51.pretty despondent there. Given what you said earlier about

:34:52. > :34:55.internationals being away, would the Dragons have targeted when win

:34:56. > :34:58.there? Definitely, their home form has been

:34:59. > :35:02.very good. They have been rubbing their hands at the time of year they

:35:03. > :35:07.have been playing Leinster, and really it was a run fault. Handling

:35:08. > :35:12.errors were too high on the night. As Michael it was their own fault.

:35:13. > :35:16.They were suckered into that yellow card for Adam Jones and the one

:35:17. > :35:21.chance Leinster had, they took it. That is what the good teams do, even

:35:22. > :35:24.in the autumn period. The pick-up points on the road and that is why

:35:25. > :35:28.it is important to home form is good enough.

:35:29. > :35:31.it is important to home form is There was a special dinner at muddy

:35:32. > :35:35.parade during the week to celebrate one of the most remarkable

:35:36. > :35:41.achievements in Welsh rugby. -- at Rodney Parade.

:35:42. > :35:48.It is autumn in Wales, the time of year 20 come from a long way away to

:35:49. > :35:50.give us a beating. There has been the odd highlight. Llanelli beat New

:35:51. > :35:58.Zealand, though they hardly mention it. 50 years ago to the day,

:35:59. > :36:04.somewhere near this very spot, John Uzzell dropped the goal that beat

:36:05. > :36:09.Wilson Whinneray's All Blacks. Gathered in that room up there, the

:36:10. > :36:14.class of 63 have come to celebrate that magical day.

:36:15. > :36:22.For the first time ever, and All Blacks side have gone down to

:36:23. > :36:25.Newport. Inspired by their captain, Brian

:36:26. > :36:30.Price... 50 years, and it's my birthday. I

:36:31. > :36:36.have every reason to remember my birthday. What I great present I had

:36:37. > :36:40.in 1963. Fly half, David Watkins!

:36:41. > :36:44.To be part of the side that was to play against them was incredible. Of

:36:45. > :36:47.course, to win the game at the end of the day was sensational and has

:36:48. > :36:52.always lived with me. Right centre, John Uzzell.

:36:53. > :36:59.Don Clarke, Colin Meads, Wilson Whinneray, Kel Tremain... They were

:37:00. > :37:04.full of stars. To play against the All Blacks was a dream, really.

:37:05. > :37:08.It was a midweek game played on a Wednesday afternoon, and they

:37:09. > :37:12.streamed down from the valleys to support their boys.

:37:13. > :37:15.No room at Rodney Parade this afternoon.

:37:16. > :37:20.I didn't go to work that day, that shows how important it was. I had

:37:21. > :37:28.the day off to play in this match. Everything was focused on that day.

:37:29. > :37:31.I actually remember quite a lot about it. Funny about New

:37:32. > :37:37.Zealanders, we remember the losses more than the wins.

:37:38. > :37:40.History told us that there were no easy games in Wales.

:37:41. > :37:45.This is it, the famous war dance, the Hakka.

:37:46. > :37:49.We just did not fire a shot on the day and were well beaten. We were

:37:50. > :37:54.probably a bit underprepared for what was going to hit us. The Welsh

:37:55. > :37:57.passion and the way they play the game.

:37:58. > :38:02.And through come the new port forwards, there is one of the props,

:38:03. > :38:07.David Jones. Dai Watkins cut a few keepers even

:38:08. > :38:16.in the muddy conditions. As only he could do. -- cut a few capers.

:38:17. > :38:21.Right then into the 25... His job was to put the ball down the

:38:22. > :38:28.diagonal, meeting Don Clarke run towards the touchline, and David

:38:29. > :38:33.steps to it for all of 15 minutes! After 15 minutes he set off on his

:38:34. > :38:39.own 22. Here goes Watkins on the outside

:38:40. > :38:43.break! Of course, now we were running

:38:44. > :38:49.forward and the All Blacks had to turn, it meant that we won the rock.

:38:50. > :38:55.Bob Prosser took the ball, ran with it and threw it out to me.

:38:56. > :39:01.The next thing I looked, years stepping inside, what is he doing? !

:39:02. > :39:06.And I had just dropped the ball, it was just instant.

:39:07. > :39:11.Everybody was anticipating, is it going over or not two everyone for

:39:12. > :39:15.that split second stood and watched this poll wobbling its way towards

:39:16. > :39:21.the crossbar. It wasn't until I heard the crowd I

:39:22. > :39:25.realised the ball had gone over. He had probably cleared it by about

:39:26. > :39:29.six inches. Instead of me going across and

:39:30. > :39:31.giving it a rocket for not putting Dennis in the corner, I had to slap

:39:32. > :39:49.him on the back and say well done! All of New Zealand know about

:39:50. > :39:55.Newport, because they beat the All Blacks.

:39:56. > :40:00.A magnificent achievement from Newport, and if you want to see more

:40:01. > :40:07.of that there is an extended version of that feature online.

:40:08. > :40:11.Jonathan, where does that rank in the annals of history?

:40:12. > :40:16.It is up there with the best. Even in Llanelli?

:40:17. > :40:24.To beat the All Blacks, right, all international players have tried.

:40:25. > :40:29.Whenever anyone beats the All Blacks, they have a celebration.

:40:30. > :40:32.That is how special it is, because it is very rare.

:40:33. > :40:35.Still talking about it 50 years on, and rightly so.

:40:36. > :40:39.We haven't got the All Blacks for Wales this autumn, South Africa next

:40:40. > :40:43.as we mentioned earlier. We have a few moments to talk about selection

:40:44. > :40:48.headaches, one which will be giving Warren Gatland some sleepless nights

:40:49. > :40:52.is Gethin Jenkins, probably the man in possession. Your old colleague,

:40:53. > :40:59.Paul James, possibly a better scrummage option?

:41:00. > :41:01.Yes, Gethin Jenkins is Warren Gatland's number one. We talked

:41:02. > :41:07.earlier about Warren rewarding players for what he'd -- they do.

:41:08. > :41:14.Paul has to play out of his skin in bat so he can be there. Especially

:41:15. > :41:20.with the power of South Africa. -- play out of his game in Bath. I have

:41:21. > :41:25.watched Paul this year, and I think the loose-heads are in a fitting

:41:26. > :41:29.more so than the tape heads and he is taking advantage.

:41:30. > :41:33.He is a good tackler, so I think Paul would be my choice.

:41:34. > :41:36.The bench have been important. Gethin Jenkins on the bench, he

:41:37. > :41:40.comes on and is a world-class player.

:41:41. > :41:45.The good thing is, both guys are on form, both deserve to be there, so

:41:46. > :41:48.if one comes on, it'll just strengthen the team.

:41:49. > :41:54.It is the same with the fullback, Cuthbert is out. You try someone

:41:55. > :42:00.like Walker, or Williams, someone who is playing well?

:42:01. > :42:03.He has played on the wing a lot of times for Wales.

:42:04. > :42:08.There are only two specialist wingers in this squad.

:42:09. > :42:15.They have to put width on it, that is what they have to do, move and

:42:16. > :42:18.spread the side about. The All Blacks captain said even in

:42:19. > :42:25.the championship this year they are massive, but if you move about they

:42:26. > :42:28.do blow-up about ten minutes into the half. It will catch up to you,

:42:29. > :42:33.if you are about to size it will catch up to you. Wales have to play

:42:34. > :42:39.the basics well, they have to move well, and I think outside the number

:42:40. > :42:41.13 channel, the fullback has to hit lines and ask questions of the South

:42:42. > :42:46.African midfielder. It will be very interesting.

:42:47. > :42:50.One thing we have not picked up on, the timing of the season. For them

:42:51. > :42:53.it is the end of the season, for our guys it is the middle. There will be

:42:54. > :42:58.a couple more niggles in their team, they will be tired, they are looking

:42:59. > :43:01.to get these games out of the way to have their time. We have to exploit

:43:02. > :43:08.that and start strong as we have done in the past, we did it in 2010.

:43:09. > :43:14.Are the battle hardened or tired? Yes! They are battle hardened, you

:43:15. > :43:20.have to watch it. You see these boys in training and it takes its toll.

:43:21. > :43:24.Sam was saying he has felt the best since the World Cup.

:43:25. > :43:29.We have a second row, Ian Evans has not played for a while, he must be

:43:30. > :43:32.fresh. They are second best in the world,

:43:33. > :43:37.and they will take some beating. If we play well we can beat them.

:43:38. > :43:41.We have to leave it there, but we will continue this debate in earnest

:43:42. > :43:45.on Scrum V extra time, which starts as soon as this programme finishes.

:43:46. > :43:49.Make sure you tune in for more rugby chat and next Saturday all eyes will

:43:50. > :43:55.be focused on the Cathedral of Welsh rugby. Good night.

:43:56. > :44:05.It is that time again. Every year we come. A pilgrimage. Because, in this

:44:06. > :44:07.earth, we believe. In this errors, our dreams are harvested. We are of

:44:08. > :44:20.this land. Wherever we sit, we are behind them.

:44:21. > :44:28.And on this soil, side-by-side they stand, rooted like giant trees.

:44:29. > :44:33.And the earth beneath these men vibrate to the rhythm of the beating

:44:34. > :44:36.heart of a land and people ready to unite. Around this piece of our

:44:37. > :44:39.earth.
