:00:17. > :00:26.When the day of judgment provided, would East Bravo ale would Westby
:00:27. > :00:35.best? Great play from the full-back, what a try.
:00:36. > :00:43.When the curtain fell, two Welsh regions were left standing. The
:00:44. > :00:46.season is heading for an explosive climax.
:00:47. > :01:04.Good evening and welcome to Scrum V. It's been a record-breaking weekend
:01:05. > :01:09.the regional rugby. 70,000 fans in the principality Stadium, two
:01:10. > :01:18.cracking games of rugby and a hat full of tries. Please welcome Doctor
:01:19. > :01:24.Gwyn Jones. Mr Phil Davies. And a very special cameo appearance
:01:25. > :01:29.tonight from Doctor Jamie Roberts. We'll catch up with all the guys in
:01:30. > :01:34.a few moments, but first let's rewind 24 hours to act one of
:01:35. > :01:38.judging each -- Judgment Day, The Blues against the Ospreys.
:01:39. > :01:45.A place in Europe was at stake for both teams with the losers knowing
:01:46. > :01:50.they'd be out of the race. The Blues stuck with their policy of 37s in
:01:51. > :01:56.the back row and Summerhill was a late replacement on the wing after
:01:57. > :02:02.Tom James's wife gave birth to their first child. Rhys Webb retained the
:02:03. > :02:06.skippers are banned for the Ospreys. Three sixes were picked. King,
:02:07. > :02:16.Lydiate and Cracknell were all packing down in the back row.
:02:17. > :02:28.Picked up by King. And scored by James King! Straight from the back
:02:29. > :02:34.of the scrum. That is exactly what the Ospreys wanted. They've had all
:02:35. > :02:38.the pressure early on. He refused to go fig goal, but from that scrum,
:02:39. > :02:44.James King gets the first try of the afternoon.
:02:45. > :02:52.Matthew Rees to Dan Fish. Isaacs. A big gap for him. He's through the
:02:53. > :02:57.gap. He has support either side, but takes the hit from Dan Evans. Good
:02:58. > :03:02.hands by Ellis Jenkins because that was fired back at him. Had Isaacs
:03:03. > :03:09.linked up, there could have been danger. Rey Lee-Lo! The tap just
:03:10. > :03:21.stopped him. Daryn Smit tries to keep it alive. The Blues so, so
:03:22. > :03:27.close, but couldn't finish. Pressure is still back on the Ospreys. The
:03:28. > :03:33.defence is scrambling to get into position. Navidi charges forward.
:03:34. > :03:38.Not held so he goes again. No full-back sweeping because
:03:39. > :03:42.defensively Dan Evans has been left short. There is no one at home for
:03:43. > :03:46.the little grubber if they look at it. They have a free play further
:03:47. > :03:54.penalty as well. Earlier they worked! And skim straight over the
:03:55. > :04:00.whole of the Ospreys defence. -- and skim. The Blues get their first try
:04:01. > :04:04.and they strike immediately. You could see James King trying to get
:04:05. > :04:09.the position and everything disintegrated in front of him. A
:04:10. > :04:14.pass for Jarvis almost puts him over. Right on The Blues try line.
:04:15. > :04:24.Great ball to Dirksen, who has the strength to make the corner.
:04:25. > :04:37.Watkin slips the tackle. Still going. Dragged down by Anscombe.
:04:38. > :04:47.Look at the numbers left, it has to go quick. A little chip. Awkward
:04:48. > :04:58.bounce the Tom Isaacs! Watkin... He's given Dirksen another present.
:04:59. > :05:10.Fish. Great off-load. Williams. Could be on. Navidi still going.
:05:11. > :05:15.Navidi! All the way, Josh Navidi! Slides over the try line. In a
:05:16. > :05:26.seesaw game, The Blues are back in front. Blues try line in the
:05:27. > :05:34.background. The Ospreys are looking for a bonus point try. Advantage
:05:35. > :05:36.them as well. Web to Underhill. Underhill! The Ospreys have got a
:05:37. > :05:58.bonus point. You knew exactly what you were
:05:59. > :06:05.doing. Why on earth would you do that? It's opened up with loads of
:06:06. > :06:10.rugby in the second, but the stakes are playing their part as well. That
:06:11. > :06:18.mistake from the Ospreys has given the lead back to The Blues. Here it
:06:19. > :06:24.is for Biggar. Straight out to Dirksen, looking for a hat-trick in
:06:25. > :06:33.the corner. No, just held short. So, so close. Webb tries to sneak over
:06:34. > :06:39.in the corner. He thinks he may have got there. They will have to have a
:06:40. > :06:54.look at it. Has Rhys Webb kept Osprey hopes alive? He goes. Try.
:06:55. > :07:02.Web picks the ball up and Rhys Webb makes that salute Leasure that the
:07:03. > :07:07.season for the opt Ospreys those down to the last Saturday. --
:07:08. > :07:12.absolutely sure. We needed to score five tries to get into the top six.
:07:13. > :07:18.We'll was had the belief we would score five and a win. We came out
:07:19. > :07:22.firing in the second half. I thought we played some good rugby, we
:07:23. > :07:27.controlled the contact area for the majority of the game and got a lot
:07:28. > :07:32.from that area. If you scored 27 points, you should win. Before we
:07:33. > :07:36.get stuck into the game, a quick welcome to Jamie. You've played in
:07:37. > :07:42.some of these big games at Twickenham with over 70,000. Great
:07:43. > :07:47.day yesterday. How do you think that compared? A fantastic day, first and
:07:48. > :07:53.foremost, for the Welsh regions and all the fans. 68,000 people. Just
:07:54. > :08:01.jealous! I would have loved to have played. The rugby was awesome. All
:08:02. > :08:05.four teams playing with intent. Blues against Ospreys, two team is
:08:06. > :08:11.hell-bent on scoring tries. The Ospreys took the spoils. A humdinger
:08:12. > :08:14.of a second half, it went back and forth. The Ospreys got the win and
:08:15. > :08:19.the bonus point so their European hopes are still there, hanging by a
:08:20. > :08:23.thread. From The Blues perspective, will they be kicking themselves
:08:24. > :08:28.after surrendering a ten point lead? They will be. For parts of the game
:08:29. > :08:40.they looked in control so they'll be disappointed. They seemed to have
:08:41. > :08:42.turned a corner from the start of the season and they had some
:08:43. > :08:44.momentum, but they came up against a good, determined side with very good
:08:45. > :08:47.players. They are showing what they can do now. It was typical Ospreys.
:08:48. > :08:50.Ten points behind and it looked like they would lose, but they are the
:08:51. > :08:55.most bloody-minded of all the teams in this league and they never roll
:08:56. > :08:59.over, even when the chips are down. They don't, they were excellent.
:09:00. > :09:07.Before their game there was a lot made of The Blues, the 37s. Navidi,
:09:08. > :09:15.Ellis Jenkins and Sam Warburton. Early on, the three sevens are
:09:16. > :09:19.together. They get a penalty from Nigel Owens. They were good all
:09:20. > :09:26.afternoon. But the Ospreys were clinical at the breakdown. Jenkins
:09:27. > :09:29.just about to go into the tackle. Lydiate and Nicky Smith clear the
:09:30. > :09:35.tackle and produce quick ball for web. They did this all afternoon.
:09:36. > :09:40.They got into the Blues 22 and they were clinical. A good drive in play
:09:41. > :09:46.through the middle. They sucked all the Blues forward around that area.
:09:47. > :09:51.Adam Beard was earlier targeted. He's back on his feet and he sees
:09:52. > :09:56.the mismatch. He goes at Tom Williams. He carries out, which
:09:57. > :10:00.makes it harder for Ellis Jenkins to make the tackle. You can see
:10:01. > :10:05.Underhill coming around. Tom Williams has to tackle the big
:10:06. > :10:10.forward again. Webb season coming around the corner and bang. A great
:10:11. > :10:15.score. They did that in the last 15 minutes and they were very clinical
:10:16. > :10:18.in The Blues 22. They were creating mismatches, they know what they were
:10:19. > :10:26.doing and they took their opportunities. I think playing in
:10:27. > :10:31.the back row is a good thing. It's becoming a trend. Hooper and Pocock,
:10:32. > :10:36.World Cup, created problems. The Scarlets have been playing Barkley
:10:37. > :10:40.and John Davies. We have three number sevens in the back row with
:10:41. > :10:44.The Blues and it causes trouble. I wasn't a big fan of it initially,
:10:45. > :10:50.but at the beginning of the end of the season, the pitches are dry, the
:10:51. > :10:55.rugby is faster, more recycling and more tackle areas. They are having
:10:56. > :11:00.a". It's causing teams headaches. The Blues destroyed the Scarlets a
:11:01. > :11:03.few weeks ago doing that. The Ospreys are probably the best team
:11:04. > :11:07.in contact in Wales, but they struggled against the three sevens
:11:08. > :11:11.and struggled when Warburton went off. We have to consider how that
:11:12. > :11:15.changes in the future and also the applications it has on whether you
:11:16. > :11:20.pick another six and what the job of the mother six is. It's a good
:11:21. > :11:26.point. The Ospreys have obviously thought about it. They were a hell
:11:27. > :11:29.of a threat in this game. What the Ospreys did well, their first
:11:30. > :11:32.support play to the ball-carrier, his job was to get rid of the
:11:33. > :11:38.tackler and that's what you saw them Lydiate doing with Warburton. The
:11:39. > :11:42.job of the second player was to secure the ball, which Nicky Smith
:11:43. > :11:50.did well against Gethin Jenkins. With The Blues, you haven't got
:11:51. > :11:54.three tacklers. You've got four. The Ospreys had thought it through and
:11:55. > :11:59.they did a reasonably good job. The point about Warburton was crucial.
:12:00. > :12:04.In the last 15, he's brilliant at sniffing out the key turnovers in
:12:05. > :12:09.tight situations. Stepping out turnovers. Sniffing up tries, Rhys
:12:10. > :12:13.Webb, no better player. He's arguably a better player after
:12:14. > :12:19.injury than ever was. He's fantastic. There's a clip which
:12:20. > :12:25.shows him manipulating Defendi is. He's as good as Will Genia was in
:12:26. > :12:32.his prime. He gets the Ospreys over the gain line. Dirksen, he sets
:12:33. > :12:35.Tommy Isaacs down. Look at this. Sam Davies does a brilliant job. Talking
:12:36. > :12:41.about creating space for your friends. He's holding Tommy Isaacs
:12:42. > :12:48.back. Webb identifies this and sneaks over in the corner. A cheeky
:12:49. > :12:55.five points. That was arguably the crucial score. Creating space for
:12:56. > :12:59.your friends, a euphemism! I think The Blues contained Rhys Webb for
:13:00. > :13:04.about 60 to 65 minutes and in the last quarter of an hour his glass
:13:05. > :13:12.showed. Around the rucks, he's very good at minute collating defenders.
:13:13. > :13:16.-- manipulating. When you have a few players manipulating that channel,
:13:17. > :13:20.it's very difficult to defend and the Ospreys obviously worked on that
:13:21. > :13:24.and saw it as a weakness. Blues against Ospreys were sacked one of
:13:25. > :13:30.Judgment Day. Act two was Dragons against Scarlets.
:13:31. > :13:36.The Dragons had nothing but pride to play for, but arrived in positive
:13:37. > :13:40.mood after their strong showing against Montpellier. Langman was
:13:41. > :13:46.making his 50th appearance for the region. Davies and O'Brien lined up
:13:47. > :13:50.at half-backs. The Scarlets new win was vital to keep their semifinal
:13:51. > :13:54.hopes alive. They were boosted by the return of vice captain Scott
:13:55. > :13:58.Williams, who made his first appearance all season for the
:13:59. > :14:00.region. Liam Williams switched to the wing to accommodate Michael
:14:01. > :14:14.Collins at full-back. Off the top, good hands by Davies.
:14:15. > :14:21.Support from Samson Lee. Down the blindside. Very good pass from
:14:22. > :14:29.Davies to Evans. Still they go. Card is down in the middle, he looks
:14:30. > :14:36.unsteady on his feet. Williams off-loads. A little step inside. He
:14:37. > :14:40.will go over for the try! What a welcome return for the man. Back
:14:41. > :14:50.from injury. Dream start for the centre. This is the past. No one has
:14:51. > :14:51.to check stride. The return ball from the full-back, great support
:14:52. > :15:11.from Scott Williams. Davies. Short ball. Still going.
:15:12. > :15:21.Dragons fly out. Langman makes the tackle. Shingler steps inside. He's
:15:22. > :15:24.over! The referee was right on the spot and the rangy outside-half used
:15:25. > :15:35.all his height and got over underneath the sticks. Great ball!
:15:36. > :15:40.Parks into a little bit of space. Flicks the ball over the top. A
:15:41. > :15:44.break by Collins, insightful Williams. They really heart having a
:15:45. > :15:53.field day, the three quarters line for the Scarlets. Samson Lee takes
:15:54. > :15:57.it on. It's on. Davies, he'll go himself, surely. Almost an off-load
:15:58. > :16:01.from Davies, using all his sevens skills. Couldn't quite get the ball
:16:02. > :16:06.to Steph Evans. That was an opportunity gone begging. You have
:16:07. > :16:16.to say it was a good cover tackle from Charlie Davies.
:16:17. > :16:24.Great work from Langman and Fowler towel following up. An
:16:25. > :16:28.opportunity... Talk about an individual try. That came from the
:16:29. > :16:33.hard work of the second row, Ryan Langman. 50th game for the Dragons
:16:34. > :16:39.today. A great opportunist try by the Dragons, digs at the what they
:16:40. > :16:44.needed to get back into this game. Fallow tower at the back will push
:16:45. > :16:51.that across to Davies and finds Hughes. Joe Bryan. Warren. Tackled
:16:52. > :16:58.by the opening try scorer, Scott Williams. An opportunity now...
:16:59. > :17:03.Couldn't get the ball inside. Rate attack from the Dragons. -- great
:17:04. > :17:16.attack. Talk about getting two passes in.
:17:17. > :17:22.That could have worked with Scott Williams. Players outside, what does
:17:23. > :17:26.he do? Off-loads. It will be Evans who will go over early doors in the
:17:27. > :17:32.second half. Scott Williams scored himself in the first half, this time
:17:33. > :17:38.he's the provider. The simplest of passes to his left winger.
:17:39. > :17:47.A little dummy from the scrum-half. Well marshalled by Evans. Knock-on,
:17:48. > :17:53.advantage blade. Can the Scarlets clear this? Players are racing back
:17:54. > :17:58.to get into position. Shingler hacks the ball downfield. Only goes as far
:17:59. > :18:07.as Carl Meyer. He will run it, a long way to go. Great play from the
:18:08. > :18:13.full-back! Over the line! What a try! Great play from Carl Meyer.
:18:14. > :18:15.He's got on the outside and caused the winger to step in. Shows his
:18:16. > :18:26.power from five metres out. Barclay pulls it back behind to
:18:27. > :18:31.Evans. A mismatch. Can Evans get through? Good tackle coming across.
:18:32. > :18:38.Scarlets close to the line. Plenty of support. Thomas comes in. Davies
:18:39. > :18:46.waits. Barclay close, spins. Excellent tackle from Warren. They
:18:47. > :18:50.go again. He's over! Just to keep the pressure on, Gareth Davies, who
:18:51. > :18:57.hasn't been on that long, but knows his way to the try line. Very happy.
:18:58. > :19:01.We achieved a couple of goals we set for ourselves this season.
:19:02. > :19:06.Qualifying for Europe was a big one. It's good to get that off our backs
:19:07. > :19:09.with the game to go. When we went 14 points down our response was
:19:10. > :19:15.fabulous and we came back into the game. The same at the death, we came
:19:16. > :19:20.into it, but we've come away with nothing again. The losing habit has
:19:21. > :19:22.to change. A handsome victory for the Scarlets which has confirmed
:19:23. > :19:28.their place in next season's Champions Cup. What does it tell us
:19:29. > :19:33.about the character of the Scarlets to come back from those two soul
:19:34. > :19:38.destroying defeats against Glasgow and The Blues and do what they did
:19:39. > :19:42.yesterday? It's been an up and down season for them. They've been good
:19:43. > :19:46.during the World Cup and the Six Nations. They've had bad lows in
:19:47. > :19:49.between. They showed some determination that they didn't want
:19:50. > :19:53.to finish the season like that. It would have been terrible to go into
:19:54. > :19:58.freefall and lose out on everything if they had played badly again. Good
:19:59. > :20:02.that they are back. It's important that we have representation in
:20:03. > :20:07.Europe and they still have a chance of top four. I want to talk about
:20:08. > :20:13.Scott Williams. We've talked about this -- Rhys Webb. Williams making
:20:14. > :20:16.his first start since the World Cup in September. He looked like he'd
:20:17. > :20:21.never been away. Fantastic performance. Cruciate knee ligament
:20:22. > :20:29.injury is difficult to come back from. Making one of his trademark
:20:30. > :20:39.breaks on the outside. This is a 21. Fantastic at executing that. -- two
:20:40. > :20:44.on one. To do that after seven months out was pretty impressive.
:20:45. > :20:49.Great to see Jack Dirksen back as well. He's been out for a while.
:20:50. > :20:52.We'll talk about New Zealand and a bit. With that New Zealand tour
:20:53. > :20:56.coming up, so great you have guys coming in through our fresh and
:20:57. > :21:00.haven't had a season of being battered in domestic opticians and
:21:01. > :21:06.have come into it fresher? Certainly. Leigh Halfpenny as well
:21:07. > :21:10.has been injured. He's had a setback with his injury. Somebody like
:21:11. > :21:14.Scott, he's had seven months of pre-season! He'll be going into the
:21:15. > :21:21.last few weeks fresh. It's great for the Scarlets stab someone like that
:21:22. > :21:23.back as well. Especially with what was on the line yesterday.
:21:24. > :21:28.Conversely, Scarlets looking for a semifinal, the Dragons consigned to
:21:29. > :21:32.the lowest place Welsh region, 10th in the table, just four wins all
:21:33. > :21:37.season. What needs to change for them to become contenders? Pretty
:21:38. > :21:43.stark reading. 26 points behind The Blues. People have been, rightly
:21:44. > :21:48.perhaps, questioning the value of the Italian teams in the league. The
:21:49. > :21:52.Dragons have won the same number of games as zebra. Over the last 11
:21:53. > :21:58.seasons they've been the bottom Welsh team. Unless something
:21:59. > :22:01.changes, this cycle of existing from hand to mouth and reproducing the
:22:02. > :22:06.same cycle each year, something will have to change. They are obviously
:22:07. > :22:12.looking for a benefactor to come in, but at the moment no one is in
:22:13. > :22:18.sight. Whether they change their philosophy and become more of a
:22:19. > :22:22.development region. They are losing 18 games per season in the Pro12 so
:22:23. > :22:25.why don't they change their philosophy and become like a
:22:26. > :22:30.Connacht model? Bring players through, take the under 20 stars,
:22:31. > :22:34.give them an avenue to play rather than sitting on the bench in other
:22:35. > :22:40.regions. Look at Connacht. They are the model. They are doing well in
:22:41. > :22:45.the top four. The other thing is, do they need to become more regional in
:22:46. > :22:51.their outlook? Incorporate other clubs. It's the biggest regional
:22:52. > :22:57.area. Something has to change otherwise it will continue. I think
:22:58. > :23:03.it would be bad -- it wouldn't be bad to be more developmental. We'll
:23:04. > :23:09.get views from the fans in a moment. You've been a coach of two of the
:23:10. > :23:14.regions. You know this regional game inside out. Has he got a point or
:23:15. > :23:18.would that lead to the kind of dwindling insignificance of Welsh
:23:19. > :23:22.rugby in the wider Pro12? They are good points because this to
:23:23. > :23:28.statistics bear out what he's saying. It's trying to strengthen
:23:29. > :23:34.our playing numbers and in that we need four strong regions. With the
:23:35. > :23:39.Dragons, for me, it is a bit about continuity. Do they look for a
:23:40. > :23:44.broader identity? Gwent has already produced fantastic rugby players. We
:23:45. > :23:50.mentioned the under 20s. When we coach them, the first squad we
:23:51. > :23:58.picked, 54% were from the Dragons region. James Thomas was at the
:23:59. > :24:02.forefront of that group. It's just consistency, continuity and giving
:24:03. > :24:07.them an opportunity to grow and to become stronger. They need a
:24:08. > :24:11.stronger squad, they have an amazing spine of young players. Dixon,
:24:12. > :24:18.Morgan. They have a really good spine of players and it's about
:24:19. > :24:25.trying to grow and support them. It's not long ago we were talking
:24:26. > :24:30.about Connacht being poor and look how successful they've been. I don't
:24:31. > :24:34.think the Dragons are fall off. Connacht have had more investment
:24:35. > :24:39.from Irish would-be union. As it surprised you, as someone who used
:24:40. > :24:44.regularly play against Connacht, how much they've transformed themselves
:24:45. > :24:50.recently? Yeah, but you have a core of younger players. We talk about
:24:51. > :24:54.Jack Dixon and Tyler Morgan... There are some quality youngsters and you
:24:55. > :24:58.just have to give them time. It'll maybe take a couple of years, but
:24:59. > :25:03.these guys will go on to be leaders and people will follow them.
:25:04. > :25:04.Connacht, you look at their younger players, and they've stepped up and
:25:05. > :25:14.delivered this season. Final four? Unless something
:25:15. > :25:18.changes, the Dragons will be the poor relations. They are spending
:25:19. > :25:21.the whole play a budget on their players, and they are scratching
:25:22. > :25:23.their heads why that is not happening. You complain about the
:25:24. > :25:27.standard of players but you don't spend the money on your budget.
:25:28. > :25:30.Unless that changes, they will stay as they are. Of course we want the
:25:31. > :25:35.four strong regions but we haven't got them and we haven't for some
:25:36. > :25:40.time. Let's make some changes to get four regions in the future, and
:25:41. > :25:44.let's be perfectly honest, there are some journeymen in that side who are
:25:45. > :25:49.not Welsh who are contributing very little to the future of Welsh rugby.
:25:50. > :25:53.OK, we always come to Scrum V for strong opinions. Let's have a word
:25:54. > :25:57.with some of the fans. Just under 70,000 in the stadium yesterday and
:25:58. > :26:08.we have a few in the bar with us. Some controversial thoughts there.
:26:09. > :26:18.What is your take? Just that that basically the Dragons played good
:26:19. > :26:24.rugby at times and I just think they need to work better on their kicking
:26:25. > :26:29.game and closing out the game as well. Would you still go and see
:26:30. > :26:32.them if they were a development region? I definitely would, but I
:26:33. > :26:37.don't think a lot of fans would be keen on the development side of it.
:26:38. > :26:42.A die-hard fan there. A Blues fan, and a mixed bag of this season, poor
:26:43. > :26:45.start but then you had all the Irish regions away while the World Cup was
:26:46. > :26:49.on and a better end to the season although you didn't make it into the
:26:50. > :26:56.Champions Cup. As the glove Haas MD or fault? Half empty. We had a lot
:26:57. > :27:01.of hard work -- is the glass half empty or fall? Hoping for a good
:27:02. > :27:06.finish next week in Edinburgh and have a good finish. Positive signs
:27:07. > :27:09.and positive roots. Let's speak to an Ospreys fans, and we said they
:27:10. > :27:13.were the bloody-minded region, and they got through the last challenge
:27:14. > :27:16.yesterday and they've never not been in the Champions Cup before. Fancy
:27:17. > :27:22.your chances against Ulster? Of course. We are desperate to win,
:27:23. > :27:27.aren't we? With a bit of luck we will go out and win a bonus point
:27:28. > :27:30.and we will have the five points and hopefully the Scarlets can win
:27:31. > :27:35.against Munster and deny them the bonus point and we will be there. An
:27:36. > :27:39.intriguing situation you've just described. You, my friend, will be
:27:40. > :27:46.supporting the Ospreys next week and vice versa? It's going to be
:27:47. > :27:50.difficult. Needs must. It's going to be tough for us going to Munster to
:27:51. > :27:55.try and win there, but if the Ospreys can do as a favour and we
:27:56. > :27:59.can win out there, who knows? Who'd have thought Ospreys and Scarlets
:28:00. > :28:03.sitting together and supporting each other in the Pro12. We have done all
:28:04. > :28:08.the maths on the permutations and this is the Pro12 round-up.
:28:09. > :28:15.It was a record making -- record-breaking night when Glasgow
:28:16. > :28:23.running ten tries. One of ten players leaving the club scored a
:28:24. > :28:27.hat-trick. Another lever clinched a first-half try bonus point and
:28:28. > :28:32.Glasgow have now won nine league games on the trot and secured their
:28:33. > :28:36.fifth successive semifinal spice. It was also ten out of ten for Duncan
:28:37. > :28:43.Weir who converted all of the tries, including his own. He moves to
:28:44. > :28:50.Edinburgh next season. Edinburgh took an early lead as Jason Toney
:28:51. > :28:54.scored 16 of their sides points, including his only try of the game.
:28:55. > :28:59.But Simon zy both finished off the move of the match as he crossed for
:29:00. > :29:04.Munster. Edinburgh kept the pressure on the Irish before a late score
:29:05. > :29:05.secured the try bonus point and took Munster into the Champions Cup
:29:06. > :29:16.places above Edinburgh. The shock of the night came in
:29:17. > :29:19.Treviso where Connacht needed just a point to ensure a play-off place in
:29:20. > :29:24.the first time and they soon will run up 14 unanswered points. But two
:29:25. > :29:28.quickfire tries from Treviso brought the game to life before Jayden
:29:29. > :29:43.Hayward's winner put them in the Euro spot.
:29:44. > :29:48.Ulster dominated this all Irish affair. A penalty try in the first
:29:49. > :29:53.half gave them a narrow lead before Jared Payne crossed early in the
:29:54. > :29:57.second half. The game was made safe when Paddy Jackson intercepted and
:29:58. > :30:01.ran 80 metres, but they couldn't get the try bonus point that might be
:30:02. > :30:07.crucial. The wind does guarantee Ulster European Championship places
:30:08. > :30:12.ahead of the final game against the Ospreys next weekend. So it is all
:30:13. > :30:17.over for the Blues on the Dragons. They have nothing to play for, but
:30:18. > :30:21.every other team does on the last weekend fixtures. So this is what it
:30:22. > :30:26.all. Glasgow travel to Connacht with the winner guaranteed a home
:30:27. > :30:30.semifinal play-off. A win for Leinster over Treviso would probably
:30:31. > :30:34.give them a home semifinal. The two Italian sides are still fighting it
:30:35. > :30:37.out for their one Champions Cup final, and Edinburgh need a bonus
:30:38. > :30:42.point win over the Blues and hope that the Scarlets beat Munster by a
:30:43. > :30:46.big score to reach the top six. The two West Wales regions will be in
:30:47. > :30:49.the unusual position cheering for each other next week. The Scarlets
:30:50. > :30:53.are away to Munster are looking for a top four finish to reach the
:30:54. > :30:57.play-offs. Two bonus points could be enough for the Welsh region of the
:30:58. > :31:00.Ospreys do them a favour by beating fourth-place Ulster. While the
:31:01. > :31:04.Ospreys need a win over Ulster as they chase a Champions Cup place and
:31:05. > :31:10.hope that the Scarlets beat Munster and preferably deny them a bonus
:31:11. > :31:14.point. That is about as simple as we could make it, and Gwyn and I tried
:31:15. > :31:17.to do the other permutations and gave ourselves a headache. We won't
:31:18. > :31:21.get bogged down other than to say that the Scarlets and Ospreys still
:31:22. > :31:25.have prizes on offer but their destiny is in either of their hands.
:31:26. > :31:28.They are relying on results from elsewhere. All the Scarlets can do
:31:29. > :31:34.is go away to Munster and win. No mean feat. And hope the Ospreys do
:31:35. > :31:37.them a favour. Can they do it? Of course, they can. A magnificent
:31:38. > :31:40.winner probably their best performance of the season away at
:31:41. > :31:44.Ulster earlier this year so they can do it. It will be tricky. They are
:31:45. > :31:48.in Europe and there will be some tough games in the top four and
:31:49. > :31:53.there is more in the balance for Munster and their tradition. They
:31:54. > :31:56.might get something out of it and I don't know if they will win it but
:31:57. > :32:02.they will give it everything. You've been there many times, very
:32:03. > :32:06.vociferous home crowd, the cliched 16th man but they are not quite the
:32:07. > :32:10.force they were in recent years. Are they there for the taking? I think
:32:11. > :32:13.so. The Scarlets have got quality and I think they showed at the
:32:14. > :32:17.weekend when they get the attacking game right they are a formidable
:32:18. > :32:20.team. No doubt about that. I think they can go in with confidence. They
:32:21. > :32:24.know what they have to do, go out there and impose their attacking
:32:25. > :32:28.game. Munster have not been the team of previous years and this is a
:32:29. > :32:32.great chance for them. Interesting they will be cheering on the Ospreys
:32:33. > :32:37.and vice versa. Bizarre, utterly bizarre. Phil, a losing bonus point
:32:38. > :32:40.could be enough depending on the results but the Scarlets, and we
:32:41. > :32:43.have number crunched this, they've scored more tries in the opening 20
:32:44. > :32:47.minutes of their games than any other team in the league. Is that
:32:48. > :32:51.what they have to do? Go out and look to score from the off and play
:32:52. > :32:55.attacking rugby? When you go away from home you have to be positive.
:32:56. > :32:58.You have to win the territorial battle and when you get in their
:32:59. > :33:02.half you have to be accurate. I think they will be looking to get
:33:03. > :33:06.out of the blocks, and it is in their DNA to start quickly and get
:33:07. > :33:11.points on the board. With Scott Williams back in the form he has
:33:12. > :33:15.come back in, they have every chance. The Ospreys, slightly
:33:16. > :33:20.different scenario in that they are four points behind Ulster but their
:33:21. > :33:24.fixture is at home and they have scored three bonus points in the
:33:25. > :33:28.last few games, so they are on a roll. They are on a roll and no one
:33:29. > :33:36.would want to play them at the moment. I think they rely heavily on
:33:37. > :33:40.one player to drag them through the start of the season and they got
:33:41. > :33:43.some form back. They develop confidence in Europe but now you can
:33:44. > :33:49.see they on a different trajectory and they are a tough team to beat. I
:33:50. > :33:53.think they will win that one. Ulster smashed Leinster and opposed them
:33:54. > :33:56.from the top of the league. Yes, the league is pretty competitive. You
:33:57. > :33:59.look at the top six and it's brilliant it's come down to the last
:34:00. > :34:03.week for the clubs and supporters and I think the Ospreys will not
:34:04. > :34:08.lose at home. I think they have too much firepower, talking about Dan
:34:09. > :34:14.Biggar and Alun Wyn Jones, you have leaders and behind them as well.
:34:15. > :34:17.Somebody like James King, Rhys Webb, these are top international players
:34:18. > :34:22.and guys who can fly the flag even without those other guys. A strong
:34:23. > :34:25.team and I don't see them losing. Very interesting next week, super
:34:26. > :34:28.Saturday and all the games on the same time so we will have the
:34:29. > :34:33.calculators ready. Onto something a bit different, as football is known
:34:34. > :34:37.as the beautiful game but perhaps not when it's played by an ungainly
:34:38. > :34:44.retired rugby players, as Beth found out. To all of you loyal rugby fans
:34:45. > :34:48.and Scrum V viewers, may I apologise for what you are about to see,
:34:49. > :34:53.football. But it's football and a great cause. It's great to get all
:34:54. > :34:58.the boys here but the ultimate thing is to raise money and it's a great
:34:59. > :35:03.effort by Gethin Jones to get all of these people here. A ragtag outfit.
:35:04. > :35:08.A little bit disappointed with the professionalism. We asked them to
:35:09. > :35:11.stay in, and you can see by the performance they didn't do well. If
:35:12. > :35:15.he is the manager, and we haven't heard him say a word, I'm putting
:35:16. > :35:21.all the blame on him. You just have to survive. The boys are doing not
:35:22. > :35:27.too bad at the moment. Have you been a manager before? In any sport? I
:35:28. > :35:35.don't think I have. Maybe a social manager somewhere. It is hard work
:35:36. > :35:40.for them football players, but it's a good cause and a great day. Lots
:35:41. > :35:46.of people saying that the rugby players are faster than the
:35:47. > :35:49.footballers. I'm not sure what game they are watching. Yes, there's some
:35:50. > :35:53.really good athletes on the pitch. But not on the rugby side at the
:35:54. > :35:57.moment. I think they are struggling. I keep telling everyone it doesn't
:35:58. > :36:02.matter, it's about a fantastic cause and we are very happy to support it.
:36:03. > :36:07.To be honest I didn't think it would be as comfortable as it is today. A
:36:08. > :36:10.few men trying to take me out, like Gareth Thomas, and I wasn't happy
:36:11. > :36:16.about that. But it has been great fun. Do you watch rugby on the TV?
:36:17. > :36:28.It's all big hits, trying to have each other's eyeballs out, but apart
:36:29. > :36:32.from Shanklin, he's a mess. I expected a bit more action. I can't
:36:33. > :36:35.play rugby. If they got me on a rugby field, they would get their
:36:36. > :36:41.own back on me in seconds, but it was a good day all round. We were
:36:42. > :36:47.really enthusiastic or ten minutes, and then the energy levels were zero
:36:48. > :36:50.and you can tell a lot of them have had no physical activity in three or
:36:51. > :36:55.four years. Good fun and we've raised money that's what all about.
:36:56. > :36:58.When you see somebody like Craig Bellamy, a proper footballer and you
:36:59. > :37:03.think you are half decent, but you are not. You are terrible. It is
:37:04. > :37:06.good that Craig has given us some feedback. Something to work on and
:37:07. > :37:07.we have 12 months to put it right. A few training sessions before next
:37:08. > :37:16.week. Jamie, you were involved in that,
:37:17. > :37:19.drafted in as a late replacement but you manage to avoid actually
:37:20. > :37:24.playing. How did you dodge the bullets? Sam got injured yesterday
:37:25. > :37:27.and he was meant to manage the all-star team and I got the call to
:37:28. > :37:31.come in as a last minute replacement. Fantastic event, great
:37:32. > :37:36.charity and a lot of money raised for a great cause. It was hilarious
:37:37. > :37:39.at times. We had a few Olympic athletes running rings around the
:37:40. > :37:46.old rugby boys but a great turnout and really funny. We won 9-1. A 9-1
:37:47. > :37:50.victory for the ex-footballers and some of the rugby players showing a
:37:51. > :37:57.total lack of skill. A little clip from Andy Powell. Can you critique
:37:58. > :38:08.this from the opposition standpoint? A bit of an overhead bicycle kick?
:38:09. > :38:13.Blame it on the pitch. Blame it on the studs. Back to the serious
:38:14. > :38:45.business and you can't get much more serious than a tour of New Zealand.
:38:46. > :38:52.It gets our blood pumping, -- and it must get your blood pumping, Jamie
:38:53. > :38:56.as you're going. Do you approach it with trepidation or fear or a
:38:57. > :39:02.mixture? Both and excitement. You play against the All Blacks and they
:39:03. > :39:05.are the trendsetters in every facet of the game of rugby. That is why
:39:06. > :39:09.they are world champions the last two times and certainly when you go
:39:10. > :39:13.out there and you play New Zealand at home, it's one thing, but to go
:39:14. > :39:18.out there is probably the toughest tour you can go on. As a squad and
:39:19. > :39:22.group of players, we know that anything short of our best won't
:39:23. > :39:24.even come close out there. That is the challenge. That's where you want
:39:25. > :39:27.to be as a professional rugby player, going on a tour like that
:39:28. > :39:30.knowing where you stand in the pecking order. We get to play the
:39:31. > :39:36.world champions and that a fantastic opportunity. There are Wales fans
:39:37. > :39:39.who might be worried about the injury to Sam Warburton yesterday as
:39:40. > :39:43.he went off in the first. We spoke to the Blues today and they have
:39:44. > :39:49.reassured us that it's not a serious injury as first thought. He has been
:39:50. > :39:53.assessed and scanned and the Blues will be checking him out when they
:39:54. > :39:57.are back in camp. That raises the question, if Sam Warburton does Mr
:39:58. > :40:03.tour, and we know Justin Tipuric is out of the tour, so there could be a
:40:04. > :40:08.vacancy for the openside berth. Good job we have a few good sevens in
:40:09. > :40:13.there. We are blessed. I think Sam is going to be OK from what we
:40:14. > :40:15.understand. Obviously we have Ellis Jenkins and James King from
:40:16. > :40:23.yesterday and there is James Davies playing very well. James Davies
:40:24. > :40:27.might be tempted by a tour to New Zealand for midweek game and to hold
:40:28. > :40:31.the tackle bag, but he has the opportunity to be an Olympian this
:40:32. > :40:35.year and to go to Rio, and I would really hope that Warren Gatland sees
:40:36. > :40:39.the bigger picture and the personal development opportunities for James
:40:40. > :40:44.Davies to go and spend time with the rowers and athletes and the cyclists
:40:45. > :40:48.and learn and develop what the best athletes in all disciplines across
:40:49. > :40:52.the world do. Who knows? Britain might have a chance of a medal,
:40:53. > :40:58.rather than playing a midweek match in New Zealand, become an Olympian
:40:59. > :41:04.and do all of that. I would encourage him to go, but I would
:41:05. > :41:08.encourage. You are renowned as a guy who made the most of life, you when
:41:09. > :41:12.to Quins, Cambridge University, France, every opportunity that came
:41:13. > :41:17.your way and that is a tough dilemma if he is faced with it. He has to go
:41:18. > :41:19.with his heart and his gut instinct and whatever decision he makes is
:41:20. > :41:26.the right one because it's what he wants to do. There is no doubt he
:41:27. > :41:30.will be in potential to go to New Zealand and there is the alembic
:41:31. > :41:33.opportunity, but I'm sure he has thought about it and spoken to his
:41:34. > :41:38.brother about it -- Olympic opportunity. I'm sure he has. What
:41:39. > :41:43.about other boulders on this tour? Gatland will have to take a bigger
:41:44. > :41:48.squad and he will need a separate 15th in a midweek game. Anyone who
:41:49. > :41:50.saw on Judgment Day yesterday, billed as a Wales trial, that might
:41:51. > :41:57.have caught the eye for Warren Gatland? Whether he will go with it
:41:58. > :42:04.I don't know, but I like Rory Thornton who has been in the under
:42:05. > :42:10.20s. He was on a jewel contract. Adam Beard went off yesterday having
:42:11. > :42:15.played quite well prior to departing the field. I'd like to see one of
:42:16. > :42:20.those two guys going. At the backs, Adam Hughes played quite well for
:42:21. > :42:23.the Dragons yesterday. We know lad from under 20 coaching days and he's
:42:24. > :42:28.really committed rugby player and very busy. He can play centre, the
:42:29. > :42:34.wing and he gives you versatility. They are young players. There is
:42:35. > :42:38.another seven around, Ollie Griffiths, and I like him. He has
:42:39. > :42:42.been billed as a young Sam Warburton and he is another killed -- kid who
:42:43. > :42:46.firmly in the future who will be a hell of a player. We have some good
:42:47. > :42:50.players to come through. You talk about the ultimate challenge of
:42:51. > :42:53.going to New Zealand, Jamie, and you will be a senior player on that
:42:54. > :42:57.tour. What is it like for the younger players who might be having
:42:58. > :43:04.their first taste of international rugby? I remember going in 2010, the
:43:05. > :43:08.year before the World Cup, and as I said, it's a chance to test yourself
:43:09. > :43:13.against the best. I remember the first test we got blown away really
:43:14. > :43:18.by 30 points and in the last game at Carisbrook, and then in the second
:43:19. > :43:22.test we conceded a last-minute try and it killed the scoreline a bit,
:43:23. > :43:29.but we felt better in the second one. A lot of players came of age on
:43:30. > :43:33.that tour and went on to feature in the World Cup in New Zealand later
:43:34. > :43:39.on. It's a great place, not just for the guys who start, but the guys who
:43:40. > :43:43.travel as well and that experience, that midweek game against the
:43:44. > :43:47.Chiefs, they are on fire. Again, that's a great opportunity. There
:43:48. > :43:53.are those that say it's a good time to go. No Dan Carter, no Richie
:43:54. > :43:57.McCaw, no Conrad Smith. Do you go along with that? No, I don't. No
:43:58. > :44:04.doubt that they have planned for that. There will be a succession
:44:05. > :44:10.plan. Players like Kieran Read, Ben Smith, Aaron Smith, these guys will
:44:11. > :44:14.step up as senior players. As I said, you have to give them the
:44:15. > :44:18.utmost respect. They just won the World Cup may have been the best
:44:19. > :44:21.side in the world for a decade. That is the benchmark. If anyone has a
