0:00:12 > 0:00:22The rugby World Cup. Everything to play for. The pressure is on. After
0:00:22 > 0:00:25
0:00:25 > 0:00:30four weeks only eight teams remain. Wales book their quarter-final date
0:00:30 > 0:00:37with a win over Fiji in Warren Gatland's home town. Now it is all
0:00:37 > 0:00:40about Ireland, O'Driscoll, O'Connell. O'Gara. There's going to
0:00:40 > 0:00:44be some excitement, being in a quarter-final of the World Cup
0:00:44 > 0:00:49stage but Gatland will do a good job of keeping our feet on the
0:00:49 > 0:00:54ground. Good evening. Welcome to the Scrum V Rugby World Cup special.
0:00:54 > 0:00:58Coming up, the final word on Wales'' sizzling win over Fiji.
0:00:58 > 0:01:04Thanks, jet Wales are in the quarter-finals. Tonight, we look
0:01:04 > 0:01:09ahead to the Ireland game which has been described as epic, utterly
0:01:09 > 0:01:13epic. First, a few thoughts from a Scrum V per favourite. All right,
0:01:13 > 0:01:17Scrum V? Nice to see a. It is good to be back. Congratulations to
0:01:17 > 0:01:20Wales. I did not think they would make it to the quarter-finals or
0:01:20 > 0:01:25further but they are looking very smart at the moment and iron super
0:01:25 > 0:01:28impressed. I have to say the little thing about the joke Ron Scrum V,
0:01:28 > 0:01:37dimension if was null and void if Dan Carter was out. I'm feeling
0:01:37 > 0:01:47nervous. Joining us on the sofa tonight. Jonathan Davies. Tom
0:01:47 > 0:02:10
0:02:10 > 0:02:19Welcome to Scrum V. Welcome to Scrum V. Paul Wallace, ladies and
0:02:19 > 0:02:23gentlemen, here he is. So, here we are, Paul, the stage is set. It was
0:02:23 > 0:02:27always going to be a quarter-final, wasn't it? Yes, a lot of talk about
0:02:27 > 0:02:32it already. Two sides who are probably the form sides from the
0:02:32 > 0:02:36northern hemisphere and we have shown that we can match with the
0:02:36 > 0:02:38Tri-Nations sides as well and for once I think both sides are going
0:02:38 > 0:02:44into quarter-finals with a realistic chance of getting to a
0:02:44 > 0:02:49final. Tom, Can you believe this was dubbed the Pool of Death?
0:02:49 > 0:02:54and not as good as they were four years ago. I would say that.
0:02:54 > 0:02:56Looking back, you look at the Six Nations and how Wales played last
0:02:56 > 0:03:00year or this year and it was totally different, are totally
0:03:00 > 0:03:03different side. It is crazy what confidence and momentum does to a
0:03:03 > 0:03:08team because they look totally different, brilliant performance
0:03:08 > 0:03:12today. Lynn, 23 tries so far. What do you think of this team that
0:03:12 > 0:03:16Warren Gatland has moulded and assembled? It is fantastic, it has
0:03:16 > 0:03:20really grown and if it carries on as it is at the moment it could be
0:03:20 > 0:03:24the best team we have had for 58 years since we beat the All Blacks
0:03:24 > 0:03:28in 1953. We need to keep the momentum, we are growing, we're
0:03:28 > 0:03:31getting better, confidence is there and we have had fantastic
0:03:31 > 0:03:37performances. Everybody is delighted to get up in the morning
0:03:37 > 0:03:41out. The best team in 60 odd years? If they get to the World Cup final,
0:03:41 > 0:03:44it will be a great achievement and I don't see why they shouldn't. Was
0:03:44 > 0:03:48there the Irish saying they can get there, the French and English
0:03:48 > 0:03:52thinking they can get there, they're not the playing very well,
0:03:52 > 0:03:58there are confident sides, everyone is free of injury nous so selection
0:03:58 > 0:04:03will be a problem. Why not? It has been a very successful pool stage
0:04:03 > 0:04:07Forres and in a way the South African is out, we showed a lot of
0:04:07 > 0:04:13potential and maybe we lacked the confidence to turn South Africa
0:04:13 > 0:04:16Rover so if we meet them again, no worries at all. There is bedded
0:04:16 > 0:04:26talk about. More in a moment. Gareth Lewis has been talking to
0:04:26 > 0:04:26
0:04:26 > 0:04:31Really contented. I thought in difficult conditions watching on
0:04:31 > 0:04:37the TV, even watching from the stand, could not underestimate the
0:04:37 > 0:04:40conditions, wet, slippery ball. We showed a lot of composure in
0:04:40 > 0:04:48tackling and defence. The players can be really happy with the result
0:04:48 > 0:04:52as well as the performance. After last year we have had -- we have
0:04:52 > 0:04:56been close to good performances and we have had a short distance to the
0:04:56 > 0:05:00team clicking. Things are starting to happen for Rose and the fifty-
0:05:00 > 0:05:05fifty is going our way. You need luck but at the same time last two
0:05:05 > 0:05:12games we might have overplayed, handling errors, trying too hard,
0:05:12 > 0:05:17so a few creases we need to iron out but it is not too bad. We spoke
0:05:17 > 0:05:21about it before the game. Warren had spoken to some and a couple of
0:05:21 > 0:05:26backs saying if we are in a situation we want to go through
0:05:26 > 0:05:31some situations, if we are up in the game and a drop goal situation
0:05:31 > 0:05:34is mentioned and a yellow card, if that does, hopefully it won't in
0:05:34 > 0:05:39terms of our discipline in the next game but if it does come to
0:05:39 > 0:05:42fruition it would be good to defend 14 men or go for a drop goal
0:05:42 > 0:05:48situation, that is what we implemented in the last eight
0:05:48 > 0:05:52minutes. Warren is a tough -- Ireland has a tough challenge. They
0:05:52 > 0:05:54have great players. They have the one big performance in the man with
0:05:54 > 0:05:58the quality they have got, the British Lions, they could do it
0:05:58 > 0:06:01again. We have to make sure we are really switched on for that game.
0:06:01 > 0:06:05Some people might say we have achieved something getting to a
0:06:05 > 0:06:09quarter-final, coming up out of the Pool of Death but I know we have a
0:06:09 > 0:06:17very ambitious quality group of players and I suppose ultimately it
0:06:17 > 0:06:26comes down to their performance next week. So that is the verdict
0:06:27 > 0:06:30from Sam Warburton and Rob Howley. We are in the quarter-finals. This
0:06:30 > 0:06:40was supposed to be the group of death. Wales have galloped out of
0:06:40 > 0:06:41
0:06:41 > 0:06:44it alive and kicking. Let's look at The set piece was very strong. 112
0:06:44 > 0:06:49tackles, a professional commitment in both tackling and defence and
0:06:49 > 0:06:52look at that, no points against. There are two players I would like
0:06:52 > 0:06:57to draw your attention to. Outstanding performers, George
0:06:57 > 0:07:02North and Jamie Roberts. 14 defenders beaten in four game spy
0:07:02 > 0:07:06George, tremendous. Without him we would not be a successful. Jenny
0:07:06 > 0:07:11Roberts, 27 carries, thundering at the opposition time and time again.
0:07:11 > 0:07:21We must not forget he took every squad member -- each and every
0:07:21 > 0:07:25Terrific statistics. A Wales team for confident. A yes, massively.
0:07:25 > 0:07:28George North, unbelievable today. He has got better and better. It is
0:07:28 > 0:07:32interesting, it seems to me that Rhys Priestland is bringing out the
0:07:32 > 0:07:38best in Jamie because he seems to be hitting great angles of him,
0:07:38 > 0:07:44going through the game, every opportunity. He has really captured
0:07:44 > 0:07:47his form from 2009. We have Gethin Jenkins coming back. He texted me
0:07:47 > 0:07:51after the game saying he has blown out of his backside after 20
0:07:51 > 0:07:57minutes and did he seek -- and denies the his kick? As for the one
0:07:57 > 0:08:00before but two kicks this game, a try from 40 metres out, he is
0:08:00 > 0:08:08pushing for 15, I think. What do you think about Rhys Priestland at
0:08:08 > 0:08:11ten? He has done really well. He plays very flat, he has got great
0:08:11 > 0:08:16awareness and it was lovely to see Jamie Robert Hirst offloading in
0:08:16 > 0:08:21the tackle because he is not only a battering ram. George North
0:08:21 > 0:08:24bringing him down the middle, a great weapon for us. I'm sure Ronan
0:08:24 > 0:08:30O'Gara will be watching videos of them over the next couple of days.
0:08:30 > 0:08:35One statistic not picked up was tying opponents in 22. Wales were
0:08:35 > 0:08:39six minutes, Fiji were 11. If you put Ireland, they will come away
0:08:39 > 0:08:43with points and so will the other sides. That is a worry. Gatland
0:08:43 > 0:08:46mentioned it, that the clearing out of rucks, that was a week this
0:08:46 > 0:08:49today as well. When you play against Fiji it is not a problem.
0:08:49 > 0:08:53When you play against Ireland with their back row it is a problem
0:08:53 > 0:08:57because they have to tackle the contact area and it will be more
0:08:57 > 0:09:00aggressive or the turnovers will hinder us. Can I ask you what the
0:09:01 > 0:09:04coach, you heard Rob Howley saying about the decision to play with 14
0:09:04 > 0:09:08men in the last ten minutes. Tom has talked about a confident the
0:09:08 > 0:09:11team are. You get the feeling they are supremely confident and they
0:09:11 > 0:09:16have an unbelievable trust amongst each other. Confidence is fantastic.
0:09:16 > 0:09:19There is a thin line between complacency and providence and
0:09:20 > 0:09:24historically we have come complacent. I don't think this
0:09:24 > 0:09:27group will become complacent. Confidence is growing, it is
0:09:27 > 0:09:32infectious. I have played with 14 in the last five or ten minutes,
0:09:32 > 0:09:39there is no issue, it is a sensible thing to do a bit tests everybody,
0:09:39 > 0:09:43puts extra pressure Ron. -- it puts extra pressure on. It is a good
0:09:44 > 0:09:49idea. Let's get an Irish man's view. We are going at the moment. What do
0:09:49 > 0:09:53you think? Very nervous until Ireland performance after Wales
0:09:53 > 0:09:57with regards to the best attacking team I have seen outside the
0:09:57 > 0:10:03obvious candidates of New Zealand and South Africa, probably. One
0:10:03 > 0:10:07thing I have been very impressed is the Lions running and support play.
0:10:07 > 0:10:10Everyone is on the shoulder, there is that telepathy you get, normally
0:10:10 > 0:10:15after playing for a few seasons together but this is pretty much a
0:10:15 > 0:10:18new bunch of players and very impressive. One thing I would say,
0:10:18 > 0:10:22they did open up a lot of doglegs especially in the second half
0:10:22 > 0:10:27against Fiji at Fiji handled the ball a bit better, they could have
0:10:27 > 0:10:31been more damage. Also if the game is a bit tighter than it is going
0:10:31 > 0:10:34to be a different test -- another different test. It is not going to
0:10:34 > 0:10:38be a free flowing try first. They will come out a small, little
0:10:38 > 0:10:41things aren't the breakdown will be a massive area. There was another
0:10:41 > 0:10:45significant moment. Ryan Jones tried to put the ball out of play,
0:10:45 > 0:10:49they took the line-out, Jonathan Davies had the option to take it
0:10:49 > 0:10:54into touch, he kept going and got it into the try. That is the
0:10:54 > 0:10:58confident. I was screaming at them to kick it out because I don't want
0:10:58 > 0:11:01to the injuries. We have seen how other nations have lost key players
0:11:01 > 0:11:05and I was worried someone would get injured in the last ten or 20
0:11:05 > 0:11:09seconds when it wasn't needed. They played, they kept hold of the ball
0:11:09 > 0:11:14and scored a try. That has been Wales all the way through.
0:11:14 > 0:11:19penalty count, four penalties conceded in South Africa, 14
0:11:19 > 0:11:23against Samoa, ten against Namibia, 16 against Fiji. You do that
0:11:23 > 0:11:27against Ireland, they will punish you. Yes, that is going to happen.
0:11:28 > 0:11:32I don't know what the reasons were forehead but Ireland has a
0:11:32 > 0:11:37different game now. They have to prepare for it differently. If you
0:11:37 > 0:11:43look at their front row they have strengthened a lot with Healey at
0:11:43 > 0:11:47the back five is exceptional with Ireland, but I think if we can use
0:11:47 > 0:11:52on midfield to go over the gain- line, they will be trying to close
0:11:52 > 0:11:55us down and if they're on the back foot with their back-row it will
0:11:55 > 0:11:59not be as efficient. It is one of these things, you look at every
0:11:59 > 0:12:03game and you analyse way were weekend you have to work on that.
0:12:04 > 0:12:08You have to work on your weaknesses and work on your strengths as well.
0:12:08 > 0:12:13I think their selection will be key for the Irish game. We will talk
0:12:13 > 0:12:17about selection later. Warren Gatland described his team as
0:12:17 > 0:12:22ruthless. That perhaps has been missing over the last two or three
0:12:22 > 0:12:24years, especially against Africa? Yes, when there is a fifty-fifty
0:12:24 > 0:12:29chance Wales took them today and supporting lines, everyone is
0:12:29 > 0:12:34chasing the ball, because they know there is a try in the offing. As I
0:12:34 > 0:12:40said, it is growing, it is getting better and to become the best in
0:12:40 > 0:12:44the world you have to be ruthless in every department, no prisoners.
0:12:44 > 0:12:49One key especially a Wales's performance, it has been. You can't
0:12:49 > 0:12:52forget how important line-out and scrum-half. They have got it right
0:12:52 > 0:12:57in the World Cup and it is a platform to attack. Once you get
0:12:57 > 0:13:01over the gain-line, in previous seasons Anneline has been a
0:13:01 > 0:13:04shambles and because of that we have been playing off the back foot
0:13:04 > 0:13:08and we looked ponderous and no tempo in the game. Now we have the
0:13:08 > 0:13:14basics right that is why we can compete with any side in the world.
0:13:14 > 0:13:18The young players have brought exuberance. Yes, there is. If there
0:13:18 > 0:13:22is 20 seconds left and you have to keep the ball in play, but is easy
0:13:23 > 0:13:27when it is 59-nil. Youth play without any fear. They don't
0:13:27 > 0:13:30respect anything. They are having a go. A contemporary player, they
0:13:30 > 0:13:36have lots to offer, so often in the past we have been guilty of going
0:13:36 > 0:13:39over the top with experience, give the young boys a chance and this is
0:13:39 > 0:13:45what Gatland has done, he has been fantastic in his selection and it
0:13:45 > 0:13:48has paid dividends. -- dividends. You get experience by playing. This
0:13:48 > 0:13:50is the World Cup, I don't think we can think that way because the
0:13:50 > 0:13:54players who were playing exceptionally well at the moment
0:13:54 > 0:13:57are there because they are having a run of games. We come from a
0:13:57 > 0:14:01different school, we wanted to play every week that the training is
0:14:01 > 0:14:05different. When I was playing well I wanted to play every week.
0:14:05 > 0:14:11Because I felt confident and I would try things. I did not want to
0:14:11 > 0:14:14rest. Now, Warburton has been injured in the past but he is
0:14:14 > 0:14:18playing and getting used to situations, George North looks
0:14:18 > 0:14:22indestructible. People are bouncing off him. Jamie is playing with a
0:14:22 > 0:14:32lot of confidence, a little tweak on his shoulder, he would
0:14:32 > 0:14:32
0:14:32 > 0:14:38One person who has been key at set pieces is Luke Charteris.
0:14:38 > 0:14:43Unbelievable. It shows you are a run of games will do. He has been
0:14:43 > 0:14:48outstanding, phenomenal in the air, and Wales have liked this in the
0:14:48 > 0:14:52past, its solid line-up form. have to be like that against
0:14:52 > 0:14:59Ireland with their set roads. have you got tonight? A man who
0:14:59 > 0:15:04knows exactly what it is like to play against Fiji in the World Cup.
0:15:05 > 0:15:09Alex, do you think the ghosts of 2007 were laid to rest today?
0:15:09 > 0:15:13think they were, the boys played well and got the result they wanted.
0:15:13 > 0:15:19It has been building up over four weeks and each performance had been
0:15:19 > 0:15:24very good. Thank God they did the result today in style. What is your
0:15:24 > 0:15:32take on the impact being youngsters have had? Great players have come
0:15:32 > 0:15:37in. Georgian North is playing very well, Jamie Roberts is back to his
0:15:37 > 0:15:39form of 2009 -- George North. Rhys Priestland is controlling the game
0:15:39 > 0:15:44well and putting the players and the team on the front foot and
0:15:44 > 0:15:50playing on the right area -- in the right area of the ground. How much
0:15:50 > 0:15:54of an achievement has it been? great, four physical teams and they
0:15:54 > 0:16:01have used the squad very well and players have come in and out. They
0:16:01 > 0:16:06are performing very well. Frankie. Plenty more still -- thank
0:16:06 > 0:16:16you. Plenty more to come, we look ahead to Ireland.
0:16:16 > 0:16:17
0:16:17 > 0:16:21How will it go? I Ireland are going to kick... Sorry! I think it will
0:16:21 > 0:16:26be a very, very hard game and I think we could be back down to the
0:16:26 > 0:16:30old traditional one kick separating us. Back to the Rugby World Cup in
0:16:30 > 0:16:36a moment after we round up the latest action.
0:16:36 > 0:16:43There was a new face on parade for the Dragons, South Africa own
0:16:43 > 0:16:49player -- the South African pair showed blistering pace. -- player.
0:16:49 > 0:16:59It was a well deserved went. Riley en for his second try of the
0:16:59 > 0:17:03
0:17:03 > 0:17:06home side who took an early lead. Barry Davies rounded off the
0:17:06 > 0:17:11counter attack to score a first try after six minutes.
0:17:11 > 0:17:18The visitors had several chances to draw level and captain Gavin Duffy
0:17:19 > 0:17:25squeezed over for the first of his two tries. Man of the Match Dan
0:17:25 > 0:17:29bigger set up the second try with this high free-kick. A lucky bounce
0:17:29 > 0:17:35off the shoulder of the skipper sent it over the line. Connaught
0:17:35 > 0:17:40could only finish with a losing bonus point.
0:17:40 > 0:17:50The Scarlets went on the back of a three-match losing streak to
0:17:50 > 0:17:50
0:17:50 > 0:17:55Treviso and fell behind at half- time. The Scarlets stuck back
0:17:55 > 0:18:01straight after the break, a good angle from the fly-half Aled Thomas
0:18:01 > 0:18:08and Williams crossed to bring the score level. But it was another
0:18:08 > 0:18:14Williams Treviso flyer he settled the match. -- who settled. He gave
0:18:14 > 0:18:19the Italians a second successive victory.
0:18:19 > 0:18:24It was the battle of the Blues at Cardiff City Stadium and the home
0:18:24 > 0:18:30team looked to end their run of two defeat. But Glasgow's struck first.
0:18:30 > 0:18:36Colin Grega scampering over for the first try, as Man of the Match.
0:18:36 > 0:18:41Sweeney set up the centre to but a home side ahead for the first time
0:18:41 > 0:18:49in the match. -- to put the home side ahead for the only time in the
0:18:49 > 0:18:53match. The visitors were in control and they secured a bonus point win
0:18:53 > 0:18:59to secure their second win the season. The Ospreys are the only
0:18:59 > 0:19:09unbeaten side with five out of five. The Dragons move above the
0:19:09 > 0:19:15
0:19:15 > 0:19:19The moment we have been waiting for, it is the thunder from Down Under!
0:19:19 > 0:19:28We have all heard the news about Stan Carter, how are people taking
0:19:28 > 0:19:32it? -- Dan Carter. Of very well, it is going really good, thanks!
0:19:32 > 0:19:36Everybody is feeling great! Is it true there have been used flashes
0:19:36 > 0:19:41in the middle of programmes about the state of the injury of Dan
0:19:41 > 0:19:48Carter? Every ambulance and the country has been mobilised! People
0:19:48 > 0:19:52are heading to hospital, at some have gathered at Clive's to throw
0:19:52 > 0:19:58themselves off at midday, the country is in disarray -- at
0:19:58 > 0:20:02clifftops. I am here to calm things in tough times. It is a massive
0:20:02 > 0:20:06blow for the prospects of New Zealand winning the World Cup.
0:20:06 > 0:20:11the prospects of New Zealand making Wednesday, I do not know if you
0:20:11 > 0:20:16have to understanding of the gravity of this. Room as art Tony
0:20:16 > 0:20:22would cut is not feeling great Ivor -- the rumours are that Tony
0:20:22 > 0:20:30Woodcock is not feeling great Ivor. Is it is not very good to get one
0:20:30 > 0:20:35on the nose. It was a small car collision last night. A Canadian
0:20:35 > 0:20:40leading with a Ferrie bomb Pat! the big result at the weekend was
0:20:40 > 0:20:45Tonga beating France can make you must be pleased. I am happy with my
0:20:45 > 0:20:52Pacific island cousins. I like the way they operate, they leave the
0:20:52 > 0:21:00party now but, wait, who is this? They stride over to the French,
0:21:00 > 0:21:10grab them and smack them up over the knows. And Tonga lead the party.
0:21:10 > 0:21:11
0:21:11 > 0:21:16Brilliant! Fantastic as ever! Let's continue the discussion about
0:21:16 > 0:21:21Dan Carter. I remember being at the Millennium Stadium in 2007 went he
0:21:21 > 0:21:26went -- when he went off and look McAllister came on, the energy went
0:21:26 > 0:21:30out of the New Zealand players -- De Luca palace stuff. Brilliant,
0:21:30 > 0:21:36he's not the captain but he steered the ship and without him, they are
0:21:36 > 0:21:41not half the team. South Africa I think can now make the final
0:21:41 > 0:21:45against Wales. They will miss him that much. This new guy coming in,
0:21:45 > 0:21:52has not played much rugby and is not on the level of Dan Carter.
0:21:52 > 0:21:57and Garrard rumours about Richie McCaw also. -- and thereof. He is
0:21:57 > 0:22:01the leader and the captain and such a -- and such an influence on the
0:22:01 > 0:22:07game. But New Zealand have an army of new players coming through.
0:22:07 > 0:22:10Dan Carter makes them tick. He is a great player and it will be sad not
0:22:10 > 0:22:15to see him on the world stage because she want the best players
0:22:15 > 0:22:20and it would be a shame not to participate. -- you want. Ever
0:22:20 > 0:22:25since the last World Cup, they have talked about him getting injured
0:22:25 > 0:22:30and now they know he is injured and out, they have to react. They will
0:22:30 > 0:22:36have to gel together and say, we are still favourites. And they have
0:22:36 > 0:22:40enough players. If they react positively... I think it is an easy
0:22:40 > 0:22:45position coaching the All Blacks, you have the best players in the
0:22:45 > 0:22:49world, allegedly, so they should be winning everything. Now we will see
0:22:49 > 0:22:53how good the coaching staff are when you have to pick up the side
0:22:53 > 0:22:58and put in somebody very inexperienced. I have not heard of
0:22:58 > 0:23:02the replacement, so he is not experienced a. It will either work
0:23:02 > 0:23:08one way, they were just giving it up are they will just gel and go
0:23:08 > 0:23:13for it. It could be a big psychological blow. Everybody is
0:23:13 > 0:23:17talking about Nick Evans, he was the ideal man. And from well before
0:23:17 > 0:23:24the tournament, we said what about the chances of stopping the All
0:23:24 > 0:23:29Blacks? Injury is the key. The two key players have gone up. He is a
0:23:29 > 0:23:33great attacking player but if he comes into a claustrophobic game
0:23:33 > 0:23:39where the South Africans are on top, they will struggle. Smith will have
0:23:39 > 0:23:45to play a big part because he is the brains in the back line. They
0:23:45 > 0:23:54now become human beings instead of super! And nobody expects them to
0:23:54 > 0:24:00win now so they will be dangerous. They have two good ball players.
0:24:00 > 0:24:04How Enry has described Dan Carter as the navigator. You need another.
0:24:04 > 0:24:14England, controversy is false -- controversy is following them, if
0:24:14 > 0:24:14
0:24:14 > 0:24:19you do you have any sympathy? - do you have. Such it is Ireland
0:24:19 > 0:24:24against Wales and this is the preview. -- so it is.
0:24:24 > 0:24:28He would have thought it will come to this, we go 12,000 miles to
0:24:28 > 0:24:33fight our neighbours? It is just five months since this took place
0:24:33 > 0:24:39in their! Wales have scored!
0:24:39 > 0:24:47To be fair, it could be said we owe them one!
0:24:47 > 0:24:53With one of his own! Here he goes, Ronan O'Gara, he has
0:24:53 > 0:24:58done it! To get deeper analysis, and need to
0:24:58 > 0:25:03talk to a man who has been in the next. Through the internet, I will
0:25:03 > 0:25:10talk to the man, the myth, the more let!
0:25:10 > 0:25:20Wales, Ireland, he would you pick? I think it is still up in the air
0:25:20 > 0:25:21
0:25:21 > 0:25:28and I am just weary of the fact because of what we did too
0:25:28 > 0:25:34Australia. You owe us one, we did a number on new. Will that come into
0:25:34 > 0:25:38play? Is there any handover? Would you like to hang on to that
0:25:39 > 0:25:45resentment from the try that should not have been a try in Cardiff?
0:25:45 > 0:25:51Only in the sense that you use it as a positive, as a motivational
0:25:51 > 0:25:55think. There is not any be gradually. The teams are so evenly
0:25:55 > 0:26:03matched that the game could go either way. The quarter-final could
0:26:03 > 0:26:06be like that. Be have an incredible pack and always have had. O'Brien,
0:26:06 > 0:26:13Wales are emerging with a back row, how impressed have you been with
0:26:14 > 0:26:19the likes of Sam Warburton and younger Toby Faletau? Where did
0:26:19 > 0:26:25Toby Faletau come from? He has been brilliant. Tonga, we do not like to
0:26:25 > 0:26:29talk about it! He has a great attitude. It is just really direct
0:26:30 > 0:26:35rugby. The way I have always described the attitude of Sean
0:26:35 > 0:26:40O'Brien is that he ignores the first haggle and wants to get past
0:26:40 > 0:26:44it and that guy is doing it also. It is belonged time we said a game
0:26:44 > 0:26:49between Ireland and Wales will be decided by the back row. I have to
0:26:49 > 0:26:53come to your area of expertise, the front row. I can say this because I
0:26:53 > 0:26:58am 200 miles safely away from you, you have been getting away with
0:26:58 > 0:27:08murder in the front row for a decade! How dare you? Can Wales
0:27:08 > 0:27:13target you upfront? Ireland only has one strong scrum. If Mike Ross
0:27:13 > 0:27:21got injured, where do you go? prediction and the score? How will
0:27:21 > 0:27:26it go? Ireland will kick the... Sorry! Somebody is ringing me with
0:27:26 > 0:27:31the results! I think it will be a very, very hard game and I think we
0:27:31 > 0:27:36could be back down to the old traditional one kick separating us
0:27:36 > 0:27:41and probably last minute and Ronan O'Gara at just after coming off the
0:27:41 > 0:27:48bench will try to get the kicking goals and waiting for that, and you
0:27:48 > 0:27:52will be waiting to chase him down. I can see it's now! -- I can see
0:27:52 > 0:28:01it's now! Whichever way it goes, there will be a big party, one
0:28:01 > 0:28:11there? As always, with the Welsh, absolutely!
0:28:11 > 0:28:12
0:28:12 > 0:28:17What a guy! Now with his luck had Iron going to try to second-guess
0:28:17 > 0:28:20Warren Gatland's selection. It is not about dropping people. To
0:28:20 > 0:28:28secure a probably the most important result in Welsh rugby
0:28:28 > 0:28:33history. Let's look at the back Byrne is not back to where he was.
0:28:33 > 0:28:36I think Halfpenny will make it. Williams will be in if he is fit. I
0:28:36 > 0:28:41think Hook may coming because of his wonderful skills when he has
0:28:41 > 0:28:45got ball in hand. They will be watching Robert sand North.
0:28:45 > 0:28:48Stopping them will be stopping Wales. If Hook was there he can
0:28:48 > 0:28:52create trouble for the Irish. I believe Stephen Jones will be taken
0:28:52 > 0:28:56into consideration. An outstanding experienced ten having played
0:28:56 > 0:29:01against Ireland on many occasions. They will have to happen -- it will
0:29:01 > 0:29:05have to happen up front. These guys have to do their job. Almost picks
0:29:05 > 0:29:11itself. I feel Lydiard may come into the line up because he is
0:29:11 > 0:29:16excellent in the tackle area. Faletau, 47 carries, 46 tackles,
0:29:16 > 0:29:21not one missed tackle. Superb statistic. It is in that area that
0:29:21 > 0:29:25this game will be won and lost, given that the front five create a
0:29:25 > 0:29:29platform for both respective sides. Six outstanding players, that is
0:29:29 > 0:29:33where it will happen, in the breakdown and carrying the ball.
0:29:33 > 0:29:40Let's look at combine statistics. The Irish line-out has always been
0:29:40 > 0:29:43strong, we know that. Wales not far away. Ireland missed tackles, North
0:29:43 > 0:29:49and Roberts take note. An outstanding statistic to take note
0:29:49 > 0:29:53of. We have had 19 turnovers to their 14. We have dealt with the
0:29:53 > 0:30:00physicality of the Springboks and Samoa. We have no reason to fear
0:30:00 > 0:30:10the Irish. We can go out there and Did you hear that? We can go out
0:30:10 > 0:30:19
0:30:19 > 0:30:23You can be beaten. The Aussies said that as well! Nice. Look, for the
0:30:23 > 0:30:27last few years there has been nothing between those sides. Wales
0:30:27 > 0:30:31have had the better for coming in to the tournament, also the early
0:30:31 > 0:30:35stages. Ireland are really only just getting themselves going. We
0:30:35 > 0:30:41have a couple of things up our sleeves. We have to choke tackle
0:30:41 > 0:30:45which could well -- work well against Wales, very upright runners.
0:30:45 > 0:30:51Two or three guys running and hold up. It stops the offloading. If
0:30:51 > 0:30:55Wales don't get the offloads going the game will stall, it will become
0:30:55 > 0:31:00stop-start and Ireland can dominate, they are more physical back row,
0:31:00 > 0:31:05Ferris has been exceptional. He has hit O'Brien as well, with the
0:31:05 > 0:31:10yardage he's gets. It gets us on the front foot. One issue about the
0:31:10 > 0:31:14Irish side is our attacking combinations and Bowe has come in,
0:31:14 > 0:31:22you talk about the try that should not have been a try against Wales
0:31:22 > 0:31:28for Ireland last season, but it was Caplin, twice today Tommy Bowe...
0:31:28 > 0:31:34Is at an issue in Ireland? No, it isn't, today, two tries. One was a
0:31:34 > 0:31:38penalty try and a first-half try. He was rubbish! He is well off our
0:31:38 > 0:31:42Christmas card list. Let's talk about a battle of the back row. It
0:31:42 > 0:31:48is an impressive Irish back row. That Welsh back row, especially if
0:31:48 > 0:31:54Dan Lydiate is fit and comes back is the match? It is a match, it is
0:31:54 > 0:31:59going to be a huge contest. I don't know, I can't see which way it is
0:31:59 > 0:32:04going to go. You have a little bit more experience and there is is a
0:32:04 > 0:32:10world class rugby player and Edu have established world class rugby
0:32:10 > 0:32:14players in this side -- Ferris. The choked tackle, one things Wales
0:32:14 > 0:32:18have done and addressed from four years ago, that is how high they
0:32:18 > 0:32:21play the game and with Wales when they are carrying the ball into
0:32:21 > 0:32:25contact they do get low and underneath tackles, they do get
0:32:25 > 0:32:28week shoulders and they get that so over there and they have taken it
0:32:28 > 0:32:33on board and everybody is playing that could height and technically
0:32:33 > 0:32:37Wales are very good. What do you think of the selection, James Hook
0:32:37 > 0:32:42if he is fit and outside Centre? think you have to rotate the
0:32:42 > 0:32:46centres, enough footballers to play not out, left and right, I would
0:32:47 > 0:32:51pick James Hook if he is fit. I would pick Rhys Priestland up ten.
0:32:51 > 0:32:56He has played well, bringing boys into play. If we use George North
0:32:56 > 0:33:00and Jamie Roberts it is very difficult with the choked tackle
0:33:00 > 0:33:03because if we had a dummy run as it is two or three making the tackle,
0:33:03 > 0:33:08if you have dummy run as it takes the defenders away and it is
0:33:08 > 0:33:11difficult to make the choked tackle and if they focus on going down the
0:33:11 > 0:33:18middle and going on those two, you need the passing ability of James
0:33:18 > 0:33:21Cook to release Shane and Halfpenny. Also a bald the three quarter
0:33:21 > 0:33:26finals New Zealand are going to be -- beat Argentina, the other three,
0:33:26 > 0:33:31whoever plays best on the day. That is how close the three are. They
0:33:32 > 0:33:36haven't got a spare system number seven. Since Wallace' brother got
0:33:36 > 0:33:42injured they haven't got a number seven. If we play wits with those
0:33:42 > 0:33:45two players, Warburton has a massive match advantage. They are
0:33:45 > 0:33:51world-class players but it is a specialist seven you need if you go
0:33:51 > 0:33:57wide. What do you make of the selection? I would not played James
0:33:57 > 0:34:02pork, 13. He hasn't played 13 all through the world cup -- Hook. I
0:34:02 > 0:34:05would play him at 15. I was fifty- fifty over Scott Williams and
0:34:05 > 0:34:10Jonathan Davies, I would go with Jonathan Davies because Irish backs
0:34:10 > 0:34:14are very Dade -- dangerous. 13 is a difficult position to defend. You
0:34:14 > 0:34:18need the best defenders on the pitch. Scott has been a little bit
0:34:18 > 0:34:23untested, playing Namibia. started singing the praises of Rhys
0:34:23 > 0:34:27Priestland. What happens then? It is a difficult balancing act, does
0:34:27 > 0:34:32he go with experience of the young double stock I don't think he can
0:34:32 > 0:34:36drop Rhys Priestland. No way. has come under pressure, new to
0:34:36 > 0:34:39international rugby as well. He takes the right options. But put
0:34:39 > 0:34:43Stephen Jones on the bench because he is very important as well and if
0:34:43 > 0:34:48things do start to go wrong maybe bring Stephen on to control the
0:34:48 > 0:34:53game. What is the coach's perspective of youthful exuberance
0:34:53 > 0:34:59against experienced against Ireland? This is where Gatland is
0:34:59 > 0:35:03going to earn his money. It is what he gets paid for. It is very
0:35:03 > 0:35:08personal selection. They will put a plan together and they will fit a
0:35:08 > 0:35:12team around it. There is a debate, do you go for Priestland, who has
0:35:12 > 0:35:17played well so far, or Stephen Jones who has experience, who has
0:35:17 > 0:35:27played Ireland a million times and knows how to manage game. I'm on
0:35:27 > 0:35:29
0:35:29 > 0:35:34offensive. Get off it! Either way. Go on! Say it. No. Stephen Jones.
0:35:34 > 0:35:39I'm a big fan a Stephen and always have been. He's a great player,
0:35:39 > 0:35:44steady, you know way well with him. For this match I would tend to go
0:35:44 > 0:35:48there. Thank you. The problem is at the moment all the Welsh players
0:35:48 > 0:35:52seem to be playing well so Gatland doesn't know his best team and it
0:35:52 > 0:35:57is a good problem to have. Who do you pick? So many different
0:35:57 > 0:36:01combinations you can pick. If you getting dog fight with Ireland I
0:36:01 > 0:36:05fancy them. I fancy Ireland in a dog fight because if you get -- if
0:36:05 > 0:36:09you look at the old Magners League and the Heineken Cup and Munster
0:36:09 > 0:36:14and Leinster, they seem to know how to close the game off. It is a
0:36:14 > 0:36:20little bit wider round we bring our runners in, the young kids, I feel
0:36:20 > 0:36:30that we could get away from them. Thank you very much. Time to catch
0:36:30 > 0:36:33
0:36:33 > 0:36:43up with Eddie Butler and the latest It is Saturday morning and we are
0:36:43 > 0:36:48
0:36:48 > 0:36:53Devonport is very quaint, it is full of cafes and delis and cafes
0:36:53 > 0:37:01and Delhi's. This is where we are going, Mount Victoria. It is a
0:37:01 > 0:37:06volcanic dome. It is steep. This is called the disappearing done, so-
0:37:06 > 0:37:12called because after it was fired sank on a bed of compressed air to
0:37:12 > 0:37:18be reloaded. In fact it was only ever fired once in 1899 and it
0:37:18 > 0:37:27broke every pane of glass in the area! 13 turns, 80 inch calibre, it
0:37:27 > 0:37:33I was going to do this from the top of Mount Victoria and beautiful
0:37:33 > 0:37:36spring sunshine. It's freezing today. Yesterday Samoa played South
0:37:36 > 0:37:40Africa on and off shore. It was a fantastic game and it showed that
0:37:40 > 0:37:45some hour in every year there World Cup would have been good enough to
0:37:45 > 0:37:50beat Wales, I think, but Wales have been playing so well at this World
0:37:50 > 0:37:56Cup that far from being the Paul de at the death they are going to go
0:37:56 > 0:38:01through and they have yet to play Fiji relatively comfortably. The
0:38:01 > 0:38:07other great issue of the week has been Jonny Wilkinson and the balls.
0:38:07 > 0:38:11You've got to laugh, haven't you? Only England keep on slipping on
0:38:11 > 0:38:16these banana-skin, the most professional outfit in the world
0:38:16 > 0:38:26keeps on hurting themselves to stop off course the two were the guys,
0:38:26 > 0:38:30
0:38:30 > 0:38:36they took the rap. They would never Well, that was excellent against
0:38:36 > 0:38:41Fiji. Here we are, in the last-day tend not so long ago that was
0:38:41 > 0:38:47almost as far as we expected to go, but he we are. People out here Iraq
0:38:47 > 0:38:52dipping as the Grand things. Just a cautionary note. England today have
0:38:52 > 0:38:57been fending off questions about more scandal, more Mike Tindall,
0:38:57 > 0:39:01more on the three boys back in the hotel. They have had the balls
0:39:01 > 0:39:05disaster with Jonny Wilkinson. Everything England do has been
0:39:05 > 0:39:11dogged with misfortune but they're in the last eight as well. Wales
0:39:11 > 0:39:14today are saying we don't drink at all. By think we ought to be
0:39:14 > 0:39:19careful about how pay as we get because we are Rome want -- we are
0:39:19 > 0:39:22only one buggy ride away from falling off the wagon. I started
0:39:22 > 0:39:30this with the big guns and disappearing, so we've got to be
0:39:30 > 0:39:40careful but fingers crossed this is looking very, very good. From the
0:39:40 > 0:39:45
0:39:45 > 0:39:48Let's stay in New Zealand and get Justin Marshall's thoughts on rugby
0:39:48 > 0:39:51-- on Wales Rugby World Cup campaign so far. Wales have been
0:39:52 > 0:39:55very efficient, very effective in what they are doing, completely
0:39:55 > 0:39:58assured. When you think about the way they have progressed and the
0:39:58 > 0:40:02way they have implemented the game plan, the game plan is different.
0:40:02 > 0:40:07It surprised me. I didn't think they had it in them but they have.
0:40:07 > 0:40:10They're not persisting with the same attack. They have a variation,
0:40:10 > 0:40:13ball runners causing aggravation for every team they come again
0:40:13 > 0:40:17stand more importantly they are really good at breakdowns as well.
0:40:17 > 0:40:21You have to say something about the defence as well. Something is
0:40:21 > 0:40:25working there very effectively. They are looking very good. I must
0:40:25 > 0:40:28say I am surprised. I did not think they would be this good and they
0:40:28 > 0:40:33have come through this Paul was considered T's. Players that had
0:40:33 > 0:40:39impressed you? I have impressed by -- I have been impressed by North,
0:40:39 > 0:40:44he is a book with the ball in hand. He is scoring and creating tries.
0:40:44 > 0:40:48Roberts in fine form. Priestland for me, he -- I was so pitch --
0:40:48 > 0:40:52suspicious about whether he had the goods. The way he is implementing
0:40:52 > 0:40:55the game-plan, directing the team around the field, he is doing that
0:40:55 > 0:40:59very well and that is helping Wales, they are assured and know what
0:40:59 > 0:41:03they're doing and combine it with the raw talent of somebody like
0:41:03 > 0:41:06Warburton who has been immense as a captain, they are looking good at
0:41:06 > 0:41:16powerful up front, a well balanced side at the moment. Justin Marshall
0:41:16 > 0:41:47
0:41:47 > 0:41:53there. We're down to the last eight This is how the quarter-finals look.
0:41:53 > 0:41:57They have met twice in the Pool stages, Wales winning in 1987,
0:41:57 > 0:42:01Ireland in 19 native -- 1995 and they meet again in Wellington on
0:42:01 > 0:42:11Saturday. England take on France in Auckland. On Sunday, South Africa
0:42:11 > 0:42:16take on the 1999 winners Australia It has been a dramatic change from
0:42:16 > 0:42:22Declan Kidney's performance and now look at them. They are happy camp I
0:42:22 > 0:42:25think. They have relaxed once they got down to New Zealand, they have
0:42:25 > 0:42:31confidence and players like O'Driscoll don't want to peak. It
0:42:32 > 0:42:35is not the warm-up games. They concluded on and Ireland seem to
0:42:35 > 0:42:40have done that, against Australia it may be worked in our favour that
0:42:40 > 0:42:44we mugged them on the day. Hopefully you were doing the same
0:42:44 > 0:42:47here in Wales and you were in good form and it is helping you think it
0:42:47 > 0:42:51might be an easier game against Ireland. I think Ireland are going
0:42:51 > 0:42:55in the right direction, the fact they are supplying quick ruck ball
0:42:55 > 0:42:59and the backs are beginning to click and run-off shoulders. I
0:42:59 > 0:43:04think Ireland have a slight favourite. Let's get your
0:43:04 > 0:43:09predictions. Wales win. It is going to be a positive camp, it is a
0:43:09 > 0:43:15positive camp. There is momentum and it is key. It is going to be
0:43:15 > 0:43:20tough. One or two points in it. I think Wales are in a good position.
0:43:20 > 0:43:25They're tight. It is all on the day. They will be scratching the bookies
0:43:25 > 0:43:29and the best side on the day will go through. Now it is down to
0:43:29 > 0:43:33selection and motivating the players to believe that they can
0:43:33 > 0:43:38win this, not just going to the final, believe and motivate them
0:43:38 > 0:43:43that they will go all the way. one to win it. I have put a bet on
0:43:43 > 0:43:47it. It is a tough call, really close. Sam Warburton man of the
0:43:47 > 0:43:52match and Wales to win. Please join me in thanking Jonathan Davies,
0:43:52 > 0:43:58Gwyn Jones, Paul Wallace and Tom Shanklin will stop that is it from
