:01:37. > :01:47.bricks and mortar of the Six Nations. Eccentric. Dependable.
:01:47. > :02:11.
:02:11. > :02:18.Larger than life. None longer players on the stage, just watching
:02:18. > :02:28.in the wings like you and I. Out with the old, in with their new.
:02:28. > :03:03.
:03:03. > :03:09.Some things will never be the same So the World Cup came and it went
:03:09. > :03:14.rather more quickly than most would have liked. Here we are with the
:03:14. > :03:19.13th incarnation of the RBS Six Nations. It begins in Paris in less
:03:19. > :03:23.than an hour and ends at Twickenham on St Patrick's Day. The only
:03:23. > :03:29.certainty is the uncertainty born of so many changes of personnel on
:03:29. > :03:35.and off the field. And of course the weather. Europe blanketed in
:03:35. > :03:39.snow and it is heading inexorably this way. This is back to the Prix
:03:39. > :03:44.global warming days of the Championship when nine changes to
:03:44. > :03:49.an England team was almost commonplace. And the team and a new
:03:49. > :03:53.man at the helm. England have turned to Stuart Lancaster. A new
:03:53. > :03:58.coach with new values. I am focusing all my energy on the
:03:59. > :04:02.process of helping the team the wing as opposed to actually what it
:04:02. > :04:10.means to be the head coach of England. If I did that, I probably
:04:10. > :04:15.would not sleep. Three Debbie dance starting, five on the bench. The
:04:15. > :04:21.most experienced centre pairing for 40 years, and the captain with just
:04:21. > :04:28.a single cap. Scotland have remained loyal to Andy Robinson, in
:04:28. > :04:33.charge until the next World Cup. He would love to start this cycle by
:04:33. > :04:39.beating England. We look forward to this as our first challenge.
:04:39. > :04:42.Potentially new look England side. We have got points to prove. Of all
:04:42. > :04:47.Scotland have only once won their opening Six Nations game, England
:04:47. > :04:55.have not won at Murrayfield for eight years. Nobody is predicting
:04:55. > :05:00.the outcome of this. Before that, the French and the Italians. Two
:05:00. > :05:04.more new coaches. The World Cup finalists favourites to win the Six
:05:04. > :05:08.Nations this year, determined they will be no repeat of last year in
:05:08. > :05:14.row. It is a good job the Czech Republic
:05:14. > :05:20.are not in the Six Nations. It has been -36 the there today. Equally
:05:20. > :05:26.good job that Rome is not the venue this weekend. It is blanketed in
:05:26. > :05:32.snow. We start in Paris and in Dublin, and here in Murrayfield.
:05:32. > :05:41.The first match is at the Stade de France at 2:30pm. The evening kick-
:05:42. > :05:46.off here. Then we are off to Dublin tomorrow for Ireland against Wales.
:05:46. > :05:49.We did plan all sorts of excitement for you at the start of this
:05:49. > :05:56.programme outside. But quite frankly, it is freezing out there
:05:56. > :06:03.and it would get colder by the hour. -- it will get colder. Brian Moore,
:06:03. > :06:10.Andy Nicol and Jeremy Guscott decided to stay indoors. The last
:06:10. > :06:16.Six Nations, or Five Nations game, to be postponed by snow was? I had
:06:16. > :06:21.some guys are talking about it on the plane. I'm sure they mentioned
:06:21. > :06:25.it was a Ireland against Wales in the Eighties. 1982. That is what
:06:26. > :06:33.you call proper research. How much more exciting is this Championship
:06:33. > :06:40.of the back of the World Cup? It is almost a clean sheet of paper. A
:06:40. > :06:44.hugely exciting. New coaches, new players. We don't know how some of
:06:44. > :06:49.the teams will play. There is a lot of uncertainty but huge excitement.
:06:50. > :06:57.I don't think there is a any link between the two. England, as an
:06:57. > :07:01.example, are a completely different unit. It will be interesting to see
:07:01. > :07:04.how the Irish and the Welsh, who showed a lot of promise in at the
:07:04. > :07:14.World Cup, whether they can maintain that and take a further
:07:14. > :07:15.
:07:15. > :07:22.step onwards. This is how the Championship finished the last time.
:07:22. > :07:26.England, despite losing to Ireland, ended up has Six Nations champions.
:07:26. > :07:33.It's set them on route to a World Cup that promised so much. But the
:07:33. > :07:38.wheels fell off the chariot as never before. England have won the
:07:38. > :07:46.Six Nations title but not the Grand Slam. Very disappointing. That
:07:46. > :07:49.would be Jonny Wilkinson's worst- ever performance for England.
:07:49. > :07:58.Tindall and other players were photographed in bars after their
:07:58. > :08:08.win over Argentina. The RFU said Tindall was relaxing. The Scots
:08:08. > :08:11.
:08:11. > :08:17.were heroic in defeat. Chris Ashton, Dylan Hartley and Dallan Armitage
:08:17. > :08:23.were reprimanded. -- Delon Armitage. A bitterly disappointing day for
:08:23. > :08:29.English rugby. England out of the World Cup. There will be a review
:08:29. > :08:36.of England's performance led by Rob Andrew. Two-line the jump off the
:08:36. > :08:45.ferry. It was an extremely dangerous thing to do. - Mick --
:08:45. > :08:48.It will be Michael. I understand that if I had not made its somebody
:08:48. > :08:58.would have made it for me. national team is in turmoil once
:08:58. > :09:00.
:09:00. > :09:04.again. Danny Care has been dropped following his arrest on New Year's
:09:04. > :09:09.Eve for drink driving. Delon Armitage has been suspended by the
:09:09. > :09:13.RFU. Today is about looking forward. But
:09:13. > :09:18.we can look forward without looking back. -- cannot. How did England
:09:18. > :09:25.get themselves in the mess they did? Because a few of them were
:09:25. > :09:33.have we did idiots. You exonerate the management? No. They were not
:09:33. > :09:40.strong enough. They thing is, when you look at them as a litany, one
:09:40. > :09:44.after another, you'll have to question people's sanity. You were
:09:44. > :09:49.getting quite depressed watching that. I am a person who puts things
:09:49. > :09:58.behind me. But looking at that again it just reminds me of how
:09:58. > :10:02.many people got in so much trouble. Wales went through their problems.
:10:02. > :10:10.They have tidied up. I hope England Under Lancaster, and whoever else
:10:10. > :10:16.comes in after that, does what Wales did. As an impartial observer,
:10:16. > :10:22.what did you make of England? was quite remarkable, just the
:10:22. > :10:27.number. There were 12 or so different examples there. That
:10:27. > :10:33.clearly meant there was a lack of discipline within the squad. A lack
:10:33. > :10:37.of strong management. In many ways they got to the quarter-finals in
:10:37. > :10:46.spite of everything that happened. They won all begins they had to in
:10:46. > :10:52.the group. Despite everything, they did not play well. Their won the
:10:52. > :10:58.same number of games as Ireland and Wales. Do you feel the problems of
:10:58. > :11:03.the past have been pushed aside? hope so. You cannot go forward with
:11:03. > :11:07.things like this around you. All England supporters want England to
:11:07. > :11:13.start afresh and just played. So we can talk about the things we really
:11:13. > :11:16.want to talk about, the things on the field. He has set the tone by
:11:16. > :11:21.getting rid of the guys that were unlikely to get to the next World
:11:21. > :11:27.Cup. Danny Care has had his problems. He has done. Armitage, he
:11:27. > :11:30.is gone. They can be without any doubt that if they do anything off
:11:30. > :11:36.the field that reflects on them being unprofessional, they will be
:11:36. > :11:42.gone. Stuart Lancaster has been ruthless. He has got the job on a
:11:42. > :11:45.caretaker's basis. Who knows after that? A these days the
:11:45. > :11:55.Mediterranean training camp is out the window. Nowadays, they go to
:11:55. > :11:56.
:11:56. > :12:01.How does someone who helps out with the Under leavens on a Sunday, end
:12:01. > :12:07.up cutting England? -- elevens. Good question! Sometimes I lie
:12:07. > :12:11.awake at night and think of myself. I started my journey as a teacher.
:12:11. > :12:18.I have always been passionate about improving people and helping people
:12:18. > :12:22.get better. That led to Academy level. That was a great starting
:12:22. > :12:29.point. To come through as a director of rugby at Leeds, to get
:12:29. > :12:34.the opportunity to work with England. I broaden myself as a
:12:34. > :12:37.coach with the Saxons. I did not think I would end a up up this
:12:37. > :12:41.opportunity. Obviously it is a great occasion
:12:41. > :12:45.for me to announce the first England side under my role as head
:12:45. > :12:49.coach. I do not feel daunted. I am
:12:49. > :12:54.focusing all my energy on the process of actually at -- helping
:12:54. > :13:03.the team when. If I thought about being the head coach, I would
:13:03. > :13:07.probably not sleep at night. You will not be a familiar face to
:13:07. > :13:12.some England fans. How would you win them over if you had a chance
:13:12. > :13:17.to have a beer with them? I think because I am the person who sits at
:13:17. > :13:23.the bar and has a beer with them, that his me. I have a beer after
:13:23. > :13:28.training. I'm a rugby fan. That is where Mackie come from. Sometimes
:13:28. > :13:36.when you do not have that massive rugby pedigree behind you, you have
:13:36. > :13:41.to work harder. You watched some of England's World Cup matches. Is
:13:41. > :13:45.that a painful experience? Clearly. There were a lot of things we did
:13:45. > :13:50.not get right on and off the field. Part of the confident I have got in
:13:50. > :13:53.terms of getting us back to where we need to be, is because I
:13:53. > :14:02.understand the culture, I understand the environment, I
:14:02. > :14:06.understand what went on. Would you have sent Mike Tindall home? Every
:14:06. > :14:11.decision you make is contextual. The best coaches have an intuitive
:14:11. > :14:18.sense of making the right call at the right time. I have certainly
:14:18. > :14:20.got no freer end making a tough call. Without becoming the
:14:21. > :14:24.disciplinarian a teacher, there are standards and values you need to
:14:24. > :14:32.have as a rugby player. If you do not want to abide by them, I will
:14:32. > :14:37.get somebody who does. Any hint of arrogance among your players?
:14:37. > :14:42.And if there was it would be stamped out. When I have come from,
:14:42. > :14:47.you have worked hand-crafted. That is the fundamentals of what makes
:14:47. > :14:52.people successful. My challenge is to get us from where we were,
:14:52. > :14:57.selecting a new squad, and exciting squad, and creating an environment
:14:57. > :15:03.where people feel ready connected with the team. That is why we train
:15:03. > :15:13.at the Yorkshire club. We do not want airs and graces. We want a
:15:13. > :15:19.team of hard rock -- hard-working, And Andy Nicol played alongside
:15:19. > :15:27.Stewart Lancaster. He was a hard- working and a diligent player and
:15:27. > :15:37.you can't see that coming out in his coaching. When he became even
:15:37. > :15:41.
:15:41. > :15:46.temporary coach, you dig into your background. But the thing about him,
:15:46. > :15:52.I got the impression from the squad that there were just excited, a lot
:15:52. > :15:59.of the young players, to be there. It made me think, if only I could
:15:59. > :16:04.be that age again, it would be wonderful. But you also need a bit
:16:04. > :16:12.of experience. When you look at the England team, one or two people
:16:12. > :16:17.have been around the block, charlie Hodgson, for example. I think what
:16:17. > :16:22.Stuart Lancaster is saying and trying to instil is going back to
:16:22. > :16:28.the basics, honesty, hard work and respect. And every single one of
:16:28. > :16:34.those players have been selected on form. So there is where you have
:16:34. > :16:38.the respect. All that Stewart has done so far is to talk and he has
:16:38. > :16:43.done that well. Now we have to see it that is actually doing the
:16:43. > :16:48.business. If you look at the England team, this is only two
:16:48. > :16:58.years ago, they are the only two players to survive from that
:16:58. > :17:04.starting field in 2010. Well if you look at the players about to take
:17:04. > :17:11.to the field, it is potentially a much better back line than we had
:17:11. > :17:18.then. They had a lot of experience, most of the players this afternoon
:17:18. > :17:23.will not have experienced the atmosphere of somewhere like
:17:23. > :17:30.Murrayfield and experience of that kind is a big thing. Howl important
:17:30. > :17:37.is to date, for Scotland, just in terms of the game going forward?
:17:37. > :17:42.is massive. Scotland have won two games in the past two years. There
:17:42. > :17:47.has been a lot of farmers. I have sat here thinking they are going to
:17:47. > :17:52.have a good Six Nations but they have only won one game each time.
:17:52. > :17:56.There is pressure on the players, they need to win this time. Add a
:17:57. > :18:02.good season for Scotland I think should be winning three games.
:18:02. > :18:06.Let's go to the Scottish dressing room to meet with another famous
:18:06. > :18:10.Scottish international. It is a privileged to be here. Everything
:18:10. > :18:16.has been laid out beautifully so that when the team arrived it is
:18:16. > :18:26.all there for them. There is the No. 5 Jersey. Some of the grapes that
:18:26. > :18:28.
:18:28. > :18:32.have won that over the years beneath. -- the greats.
:18:32. > :18:39.How does it feel to be back in the Scotland dressing room? It is
:18:39. > :18:46.strange but it is lovely. There are a lot of good memories here. The
:18:46. > :18:51.preparation is unbelievable. They are all having different drinks,
:18:51. > :18:56.the game has changed and I believe the Scotland team has been together
:18:56. > :18:59.now for two weeks preparing for this game. We got three days!
:18:59. > :19:09.you played against England eight or nine times. You never managed to
:19:09. > :19:19.beat them? Fate you very much! Yes, it is special. It is great to be
:19:19. > :19:21.
:19:21. > :19:27.involved, the crowd, there is a lot of hospitality behind the scenes.
:19:27. > :19:32.And a lot of great memories as I say. But I would have paid a lot to
:19:32. > :19:38.beat England! Of course Stuart Lancaster is coaching England these
:19:38. > :19:46.days. You played with him before. Did you ever think he was a
:19:46. > :19:56.potential England coach? Definitely not, all that time ago. It was
:19:56. > :19:56.
:19:56. > :20:02.ironic that Stuart Lancaster played for Scotland. But both will want to
:20:02. > :20:12.prove a point, both coaches. Who is going to win? Scotland, without a
:20:12. > :20:21.shadow of a doubt. I have to explain, I had an
:20:21. > :20:26.argument with the very sharp knife! But well enough to be with us
:20:26. > :20:30.throughout the Championship. To talk about the Championship,
:20:30. > :20:34.nowadays the RBS Six Nations goes out to more than 100 countries
:20:34. > :20:38.worldwide. And every year the parliamentary rugby kit committee
:20:38. > :20:46.at the House of Commons have a get together to honour some of the
:20:46. > :20:51.biggest names in the game. They get given its fantastically lavish
:20:51. > :20:57.jackets in the most sumptuous of surroundings and they reflect on
:20:57. > :21:07.the game in the context of the world.
:21:07. > :21:07.
:21:08. > :21:12.This is my first time in the House of Commons. It is so real, the
:21:12. > :21:20.things that we talk about is completely out of my comfort zone.
:21:20. > :21:25.But I'm just enjoying the experience. We have seen Wales as a
:21:25. > :21:28.rising team, their performance in the tournament was fantastic.
:21:28. > :21:34.England obviously disappointed a lot of people but there were not
:21:34. > :21:44.far off. There's not much difference between getting out --
:21:44. > :21:47.
:21:47. > :21:51.getting knocked out and playing in the World Cup final. The French
:21:51. > :21:58.team are going to have a little more focused and discipline whiffed
:21:58. > :22:03.their new coach. Ken Newell point to a youngster who might be coming
:22:03. > :22:07.through to fill the boots of Shane Williams? We have got a lot of
:22:08. > :22:12.talent coming through at the moment. I will keep a close eye on the
:22:12. > :22:21.winners. George North has been around for a long time now and is
:22:21. > :22:27.one to watch out for. Owen Farrells took to the stage as a kid at
:22:27. > :22:33.Saracens, just a chip off the old block. His professionalism has been
:22:33. > :22:43.phenomenal. If I had to let you down and say who is going to win
:22:43. > :22:44.
:22:44. > :22:49.the Six Nations in 2012, what would you say? I think it will be France.
:22:49. > :22:57.I love watching the French claimed rugby. If they can really turn it
:22:57. > :23:02.on. The Irish team is ageing a bit more. The Welsh are exciting.
:23:02. > :23:07.Scotland are always there fighting. But I think perhaps England could
:23:07. > :23:16.be the surprise. I do think that Wales could win the Six Nations
:23:16. > :23:20.Championship. There's no way you're going to say anything else!
:23:20. > :23:28.Welly have jumped ship because he is joining us as part of the
:23:28. > :23:35.commentary team next week. If we can move want to talk about
:23:35. > :23:39.Wales in Dublin tomorrow. Would you think Wales are, post-World Cup?
:23:39. > :23:48.think they were brought down to earth by that defeat to Australia
:23:48. > :23:54.in December. They have gone back to Poland, just to get themselves back
:23:54. > :23:59.together, get some players back from injury. The balance looks good,
:23:59. > :24:06.it looks good on paper. But there for players from the front five
:24:06. > :24:11.injured. It is a tough place to go. It is a great game, Ireland start
:24:11. > :24:19.as favourites, but if Wales get their set-piece right. Their back
:24:19. > :24:25.line is massive at the moment. have to have the ball there.
:24:25. > :24:31.have to have the ball but a set piece international rugby, that is
:24:31. > :24:39.what the difference was in the World Cup. So it is exciting and a
:24:39. > :24:44.great Challenge to start in Dublin. If we show you that sending off
:24:44. > :24:51.again, do you still think it was a bad decision? Yes, a dreadful
:24:51. > :24:55.decision. To the letter of the law, OK he was going. But for
:24:55. > :25:02.consistency in the World Cup, that was the only send it off and it was
:25:02. > :25:08.totally ridiculous. I'm all right about the red card, to be honest. I
:25:08. > :25:12.lost my grandad before Christmas so I know what is important in life.
:25:12. > :25:21.There are more important things that can happen in life, worse
:25:21. > :25:24.things. And we will hear more from Sam Warburton tomorrow. That Wales
:25:25. > :25:31.- Ireland game, arguably the best game in World Cup, some tremendous
:25:31. > :25:35.action. It was very physical. I thought Almond were going to win it,
:25:35. > :25:41.frankly. Because of how well they have played against Australia and
:25:41. > :25:46.Italy. But it was more of the physicality in that game. Mike
:25:46. > :25:51.Phillips was outstanding. And Wales fully deserved to win that.
:25:51. > :25:58.what happened in that game needs to happen in the game tomorrow, but
:25:58. > :26:06.the front five match the Irish front five, enabling the quicker
:26:06. > :26:11.welshed back road to stop O'Brien. That is what they did. They looked
:26:11. > :26:18.of the game against Australia and how the Irish defenders kept the
:26:18. > :26:23.Australians up off the floor. So then will signal will fight the
:26:23. > :26:27.defensive element of the Irish back row. Is there a danger from the
:26:27. > :26:36.Welsh perspective that there is too much optimism based on the World
:26:36. > :26:43.Cup? What is new! Warren Gatland mentioned it, it is managing
:26:43. > :26:47.expectation. That is always tough in Wales. But going to arm and
:26:47. > :26:51.first of all, it there is a sense of reality. Especially after
:26:51. > :26:56.Australia. Now they need to recapture that form. If we get the
:26:56. > :27:01.set piece right I'm sure we will do well this year. Well Let's Talk
:27:01. > :27:05.about Ireland. So much promised in the World Cup and they fell short.
:27:05. > :27:15.Therein without Brian O'Driscoll with a sport that is older, but
:27:15. > :27:16.
:27:16. > :27:22.certainly wiser. -- a squad.
:27:22. > :27:28.Our performance against Australia this year, that was the standard I
:27:28. > :27:33.think we aspire to. But the last 30 minutes against Wales just was not
:27:33. > :27:41.good enough. Defence is a big strength of ours but we conceded
:27:42. > :27:51.two tries and that was sloppy. We failed to convert opportunities.
:27:51. > :27:56.And I don't think you can do that in that type of competition.
:27:56. > :28:00.It has been unusual not having him around the changing room. It is not
:28:00. > :28:04.ideal to be missing one of the best players in the world. But I think
:28:04. > :28:12.we are up in a better position than we have been in the past to deal
:28:12. > :28:17.with it was DUP we have a superb captain. He is not lacking in
:28:17. > :28:24.experience. And the way this team is run, there are other leaders
:28:24. > :28:27.around the place as well. Did you take the urge to get out the Brome
:28:27. > :28:36.a little? It was quite a conservative selection. There was
:28:36. > :28:44.never any problem picking the team, the problem is who you leave out.
:28:44. > :28:50.Because the guys I have picked are also playing well and looking at
:28:50. > :29:00.the back line, for example. Darcy is only the one probably in the
:29:00. > :29:05.
:29:06. > :29:09.realms of missing out on the next World Cup.
:29:09. > :29:16.Luckily for us we are well looked after and got a bit of time off
:29:16. > :29:20.after the World Cup, after Christmas. And I think it showed in
:29:20. > :29:26.the Cup performances. The players were fresh, they were in good shape
:29:26. > :29:30.and they were hungry. If you look at the provinces, qualifying, it
:29:30. > :29:34.was great for the guys. You're expectation in the next few weeks?
:29:34. > :29:38.We are better when the focus one game at a time and that is what
:29:38. > :29:43.we're doing. We are focusing on this Welsh game and playing to our
:29:43. > :29:50.potential. We have to make sure that we play to our potential in
:29:50. > :29:54.this game and if we do that, we have a great chance of winning.
:29:55. > :29:59.This is a winner takes all. We were lucky to get away with a win in
:29:59. > :30:05.Rome last year. We need to come out of the blocks faster than in
:30:05. > :30:14.previous years. And we will hear from Johnny Sexton before the match
:30:14. > :30:24.tomorrow. Without O'Driscoll, how much worse are Almond of? -- island
:30:24. > :30:24.
:30:24. > :30:34.Massively. He has been a big pleader. O'Driscoll always does it,
:30:34. > :30:36.
:30:36. > :30:43.he always delivers. He does not play badly in important games. With
:30:43. > :30:48.O'Driscoll being out, O'Connell has been a monumental. Leave the
:30:48. > :30:52.captaincy aside, as a player he is back to when we were putting him
:30:52. > :30:57.alongside Martin Johnson. The Irish team are playing well. The
:30:57. > :31:04.provincial teams are doing brilliantly. Ireland should be on a
:31:04. > :31:10.roll. The winner of the Six Nations will be? France. It will not be
:31:10. > :31:16.easy. The first weekend is crucial. As Declan Kidney said, you don't
:31:16. > :31:21.want to be chasing the game. If Scotland win, they go to Cardiff.
:31:21. > :31:28.The Ireland and Wales game is played as well. 3 home games for
:31:28. > :31:33.Wales. If Ireland keep their first 15th it, that is a very strong side.
:31:33. > :31:42.I don't think they have the strength in depth that France have.
:31:42. > :31:48.They also have to go to Paris. I think France will win it. I am
:31:48. > :31:52.going for Ireland. The provincial sides playing incredibly well.
:31:53. > :31:59.Individually they are on form. I think they will bury that French
:31:59. > :32:09.Monkey in Paris. That will be a fantastic game next weekend. The
:32:09. > :32:16.Ireland matched tomorrow, against Wales, that is at 2:30pm on BBC One.
:32:16. > :32:23.That is it from us for the moment. IAEA back at 4:30pm. We have all
:32:23. > :32:29.sorts of pyrotechnics. -- we are back at 4:30pm. We have got the Red
:32:29. > :32:37.Hot chilly pipers on the field. We should have Coldplay! We are
:32:37. > :32:42.heading to Paris to join Gabby Logan. We had heated BBC questions
:32:42. > :32:52.to Keith everybody warm out there. The RBS Six Nations is just half-
:32:52. > :33:01.
:33:02. > :33:11.The biggest win in Italian rugby history! The Grand Slam champions
:33:12. > :33:19.
:33:19. > :33:22.Hello and welcome to the Stade de France. It is hard to believe it is
:33:22. > :33:30.only three months since France were a drop goal away from becoming one
:33:30. > :33:33.champions. This will be edge-of- the-seat stuff.
:33:33. > :33:37.When France played badly on the Marc Lievremont, the coach could
:33:37. > :33:46.never hide his feelings. Traitors and cowards he described the team
:33:46. > :33:54.last season. So at the World Cup after on tidy wins over Japan and
:33:55. > :34:01.Canada, there was always going to be tension. The players wanted the
:34:01. > :34:06.coach to shot up. The ball -- the boot of Yachvili laid down policy.
:34:06. > :34:16.Then came the selection show- stopper. Morgan Parra would play
:34:16. > :34:19.
:34:19. > :34:29.outside Yachvili. Francois Pandu caused dropped. -- Francois Trinh-
:34:29. > :34:31.
:34:31. > :34:35.Duc. France limped into the quarter finals. They beat England. In the
:34:35. > :34:40.semi-final they beat Wales. They should not have but somehow did.
:34:40. > :34:47.France were in the World Cup final. The worst team, it was generally
:34:47. > :34:53.felt, Evra to go so far. This could only go so far. Except France
:34:53. > :34:58.should have won. They received no help from the referee. That may be
:34:58. > :35:03.what sometimes happens to an awkward squad at the World Cup.
:35:03. > :35:08.Thierry Dusautoir was out of this world. He was magnificent. You can
:35:08. > :35:12.call them anything they like, but they remained an impenetrable law
:35:12. > :35:19.on to themselves. Some story. Ready for the next
:35:19. > :35:29.chapter? These three are. Keith Wood is braving the elements.
:35:29. > :35:33.never worn here. You need a big cold. Lawrence Dallaglio, are Croke
:35:33. > :35:40.Italian -- our Anglo Italian stallion. And Michael Jekyll has
:35:40. > :35:50.joined the team. Guided Leinster to the European Cup in 2009. Plenty of
:35:50. > :35:58.
:35:58. > :36:03.He was nicknamed the pig as a player, can Philippe sold on
:36:03. > :36:09.dribbling home the bacon for France? -- Philippe Saint-Andre. We
:36:09. > :36:15.will hear from the new Italian coach, Jacques Brunel, and Sergio
:36:15. > :36:22.Parisse. Can Italy draw inspiration from last year's inspirational
:36:22. > :36:27.victory? Both teams arrived full of
:36:27. > :36:34.expectation. Coaches, new caps, some familiar faces and great
:36:34. > :36:37.leaders. For Philippe Saint-Andre, the adventure begins. How well he
:36:37. > :36:42.restored the balance to this French squad and get some consistency
:36:42. > :36:47.while keeping that flair and excitements we have grown to love?
:36:47. > :36:51.They are still favourites. Keith, it has been unbelievable for France.
:36:51. > :36:56.Who would have predicted they would be a point away from becoming world
:36:56. > :37:00.champions? The World Cup put everything on top of its head.
:37:00. > :37:05.France were rubbish for the whole thing and were magnificent in the
:37:05. > :37:12.final. To lose by a point with virtually everything going against
:37:12. > :37:15.them, it threw everything into the air again. Michael, it is always so
:37:15. > :37:25.interesting of the back of a World Cup, because it is the time to
:37:25. > :37:32.experiment, isn't it? Obviously new players put their hands forward.
:37:32. > :37:37.The coach has also spoken about continuity. He has not had a long
:37:37. > :37:42.time. I think he has done well. He has integrated some new players, he
:37:42. > :37:48.has taken some risks. He has kept some continuity. I think they will
:37:48. > :37:52.perform well. Jacques Brunel has got a job on his hands.
:37:52. > :37:56.certainly has. Honda Nick Mallett the highlight was that victory last
:37:56. > :38:00.year against France. -- wonder. Italy were in a tough group in the
:38:00. > :38:05.World Cup but they were disappointing. It is back to basics.
:38:05. > :38:10.He has picked some new players, brought some back. He has got a lot
:38:10. > :38:20.of experience as a coach. He will not be intimidated by the job at
:38:20. > :38:23.hand. France favourites? I think so. They have a fantastic team. Under
:38:23. > :38:27.Marc Lievremont they never had consistency. They never had
:38:27. > :38:31.consistency of selection, they never played consistently. They
:38:31. > :38:36.have some of the best players to have ever played. They could really
:38:37. > :38:44.deliver. I think the same. They have 22 at the 30 of the word Cup
:38:44. > :38:49.squad. He has brought in some new players. The nucleus of the team is
:38:49. > :38:55.very experienced. They are heading in the right direction. Let's learn
:38:55. > :39:00.a little bit more about Philippe some corn trade. We saw him play.
:39:00. > :39:10.He was such an flair player. Willie deliver that same kind of flair as
:39:10. > :39:44.
:39:44. > :39:52.Philippe Saint-Andre is back there. Running over half way. He is going
:39:52. > :39:56.to score again. Saw him play many times. He hasn't
:39:56. > :40:02.aged that much? He's looking very well. He has got some great
:40:02. > :40:07.experience at club level. I think he takes quite a pragmatic view. He
:40:07. > :40:11.has put together a very big French pack. He has put Yachvili at a
:40:11. > :40:18.scrum-half. It is nervous for him. It is his first game as French
:40:18. > :40:25.coach. He will look to expand. is interesting looking at the
:40:25. > :40:29.manner in which he played. He was such a flair player. With Toulon it
:40:30. > :40:34.was all about kicking. It was not a traditional French flair. Lets hear
:40:34. > :40:40.from the man himself. You had an illustrious career as a
:40:40. > :40:49.player. Now you're back as coach. How proud I you today? Are of
:40:49. > :40:58.course, when La Marseillaise will be on they will be a lot of emotion.
:40:58. > :41:03.I think we had a good week. Now it is about 80 minutes. We always say,
:41:03. > :41:08.I wonder which French team will turn a up today. Is the key for you
:41:08. > :41:13.to add some consistency? We tried to have a good week. To be very
:41:13. > :41:22.professional. I hope it will be a very good French team this
:41:22. > :41:28.afternoon. They're a physical, very focused. Wait and see. We hope. We
:41:28. > :41:32.work well all week. We just need to show over 80 minutes. I know it is
:41:32. > :41:37.freezing but I hope it will be warm on the pitch. France came within a
:41:37. > :41:44.whisker of winning the World Cup. How have the players responded to
:41:44. > :41:49.that disappointment and to that new challenge? Yes, it was hard and the
:41:49. > :41:57.World Cup. We should have been out during the Pool stages. We need to
:41:57. > :42:03.be focused and me to concentrate. We need competent. We can have some
:42:03. > :42:06.confidence. First we need to be very precise on the set piece. In
:42:06. > :42:11.the rock. The Italians are very physical.
:42:11. > :42:19.Michael, is that what you know of him? You have taken on his team at
:42:19. > :42:23.Toulon. Precision, he likes his kicking number tens? I think the
:42:23. > :42:27.French team will see a contradiction in terms from the
:42:27. > :42:36.last coached to the new coach. Philippe Saint-Andre will be very
:42:36. > :42:40.based around set pieces. He will bring a lot of values back. He
:42:40. > :42:46.coached will contain have Toulon. That is the type of game he likes
:42:46. > :42:52.to play. Dominate the opposition. That is what we will see. Is his
:42:52. > :42:57.biggest asset that he is not Marc Lievremont? I think he has met that
:42:57. > :43:04.is part of that. The French public and supporters do not want to see
:43:04. > :43:08.turgid rugby. You can to stamp that out completely, can you? No. With
:43:08. > :43:13.the talent he has in the back line, he will try to get the blend right.
:43:13. > :43:18.He will try to bully teams in the first 25 minutes. After that people
:43:18. > :43:23.want them to have a flash. Marc Lievremont lost the dressing room
:43:23. > :43:28.at the end. He has to manage that situation. There are certain key
:43:28. > :43:32.figures he will have to manage? he will have to manage the
:43:32. > :43:36.personalities. That is one of his strengths. He has always been close
:43:36. > :43:40.to his players. He likes to know what is going on in the dressing
:43:41. > :43:45.room. I don't think he will have a problem. Harinordoquy is on the
:43:45. > :43:52.bench. He has got so much experience to choose from.
:43:52. > :44:00.Dusautoir, Nicolas Mas, William Servat. Incredible experience.
:44:00. > :44:04.has gone for combinations of players as well. 10 players coming
:44:04. > :44:10.from Claremont and Toulouse. Warren Gatland did the same when he took
:44:10. > :44:13.over Wales with Ospreys. Is that significant? That is the logical
:44:13. > :44:19.progression for the team. They are the two most dominant teams in
:44:19. > :44:24.France. They should be represented. One thing that is interesting in
:44:24. > :44:28.relation to what the coach wants and what actually happens, he will
:44:29. > :44:33.want to play the bullying game. That is good. The natural flare in
:44:33. > :44:41.those guys will take over. He should get a nice blend. That
:44:42. > :44:45.sounds perfect. You hope so! Let's not forget at the Stadio Flaminio
:44:45. > :44:52.last season, Italy produced the biggest shock in Six Nations
:44:52. > :45:02.history. Italy have never beaten France in
:45:02. > :45:02.
:45:02. > :45:49.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 46 seconds
:45:49. > :45:54.Italian at thoughts resting with The referee has blown the whistle.
:45:54. > :45:58.The biggest win in Italian at rugby history!
:45:58. > :46:03.It was an amazing day, incredible atmosphere. Of course they still
:46:03. > :46:07.finished bottom of the table but psychologically how important is it
:46:07. > :46:11.for the Italian players to know that they can get to the World Cup
:46:11. > :46:21.final? I think they have been phenomenal. People want them to do
:46:21. > :46:30.well. They have improved all the time. They had a lack of
:46:30. > :46:35.consistency which did then disappear. Winning so many kicks
:46:35. > :46:43.against France and delivering on such a large stage, which they
:46:44. > :46:51.normally do not, they delivered in time. 12 of the starting players
:46:51. > :46:57.today from just three of the biggest clubs. That must be a
:46:57. > :47:01.source of comfort to the Italian union that they are producing
:47:01. > :47:06.players like that? Won into the first came into the Six Nations
:47:06. > :47:12.they were encouraging their players to go overseas and now it they are
:47:13. > :47:20.bringing them back to Italy and trying to grow the rugby in those
:47:20. > :47:30.two provinces in particular. It will be interesting to see if
:47:30. > :47:33.
:47:33. > :47:39.Brunel is able to tack -- to tap An outstanding turn around.
:47:39. > :47:45.Absolutely fantastic. We are starting a new history with
:47:45. > :47:52.Brunel as coach. We do not have so much time to train before the Six
:47:52. > :47:56.Nations. But he arrived with a lot of enthusiasm and ambition. And
:47:56. > :48:06.this is good for the team and we are looking forward to doing well
:48:06. > :48:06.
:48:06. > :48:51.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 46 seconds
:48:51. > :49:00.For sure he has another style, at another mentality. As a French
:49:00. > :49:07.coach he is for sure different. We want to be more dangerous when the
:49:07. > :49:17.play against teams. To put the other teams under pressure. We must
:49:17. > :49:46.
:49:46. > :49:52.In this game we have four new players, young players. So I'm
:49:52. > :49:57.really happy and in the next four years we are going to have more
:49:58. > :50:02.young Italian players coming into the first team. You're young, you
:50:02. > :50:11.want to play and you have a coach to give you the conference. It is
:50:11. > :50:16.going to be good for Italian rugby. Brunel of course coached Perpignan
:50:16. > :50:21.to the title in to those non- line. What will he bring to the game?
:50:21. > :50:30.is Clare from his comments that what he's trying to bring to the
:50:30. > :50:40.team is a winning identity. That is what he did before. He is making
:50:40. > :50:50.all the right noises early on. They have a lot of important
:50:50. > :50:53.
:50:53. > :50:58.players. I think the captain is just getting better and better.
:50:58. > :51:02.That and the fact that a lot of these players are in the same
:51:02. > :51:07.league together, it is going to be more and more competitive for the
:51:07. > :51:15.Italian team as it goes on. Weather showed us last season that they can
:51:15. > :51:21.beat anyone on their day. They have struggled with the 9th and 10
:51:21. > :51:25.players. They have, they have not been able to capitalise. The full
:51:25. > :51:33.works have not got too much of the ball. Just in the last few
:51:33. > :51:42.campaigns, they have had five per number tens. They started well in
:51:42. > :51:47.the Championship of course. Then they had a hard act to follow. It
:51:47. > :51:51.is a new chapter, their new coach. They really need some direction
:51:51. > :51:59.because the forwards are putting in all the work and they want some
:51:59. > :52:06.reward for their efforts. I keep going back to open now, he reminds
:52:06. > :52:11.me a lot of Martin O'Neill. The ability to bring teams that are
:52:11. > :52:17.unheralded, and absolutely extract the most out of them and get them
:52:17. > :52:24.to deliver. He has set it out, he wants to do it in two or three
:52:24. > :52:28.years' time. His expectation first DOE League will be pretty high, but
:52:28. > :52:38.publicly he's saying, in a couple of years, letting them find their
:52:38. > :52:44.
:52:44. > :52:51.own way. It is a new era under the new coach.
:52:51. > :52:55.What impression did the French squad make a new? Very good. With
:52:55. > :53:01.the weather like this, they looked confident. There really focused on
:53:01. > :53:06.the game today. And what impact do you drink the coach will have on
:53:06. > :53:16.the French side? I think he is going to bring some profession
:53:16. > :53:22.
:53:22. > :53:32.nullity to them. He once to see the Blair has been focused. -- he wants
:53:32. > :53:38.
:53:38. > :53:44.to see the players focused. He has his assistants who also good
:53:44. > :53:54.coaches and I think they will bring some good strategies for winning
:53:54. > :54:00.
:54:00. > :54:10.the game. It sounds like it is collective responsibility.
:54:10. > :54:11.
:54:11. > :54:21.It is not warm here today, and cannot impressed that I knew enough.
:54:21. > :54:29.I would not have fancied training outside in this weather!
:54:29. > :54:34.Hopefully it will for all out before next week, but we will see.
:54:34. > :54:44.It is interesting some of the changes that have been made in the
:54:44. > :54:48.
:54:48. > :54:56.French side. To a big centres. Wesley Fofana has been well hidden
:54:56. > :55:01.under at the radar. He went into the academy system at Claremont. As
:55:01. > :55:08.part of what is a very good bunch of youngsters coming out of their
:55:08. > :55:11.at the moment. Very difficult to tackle and it very fast footwork.
:55:11. > :55:17.And to have the knack of being in the right place at the right time
:55:17. > :55:22.as far as support is concerned. is a great place to be in his first
:55:23. > :55:32.game, put sin bin beside every Ian Rougerie. It is the right way to do
:55:33. > :55:36.
:55:36. > :55:42.it,. Who is going to win it? comfortable win for France. They're
:55:42. > :55:47.coming out now so let's handover to our commentary team. Lawrence is
:55:47. > :55:57.down there alongside Eddie Butler. down there alongside Eddie Butler.
:55:57. > :56:18.
:56:18. > :56:28.forward to lead out his country. In very difficult conditions was DUP
:56:28. > :56:44.
:56:44. > :56:52.and Sergio Parisse, the captain of the Six Nations is under way.
:56:52. > :56:58.very exciting afternoon. Very exciting for both coaches as well.
:56:58. > :57:08.Lionel Nallet, the former captain. We thought he might go into
:57:08. > :57:29.
