:00:56. > :01:05.I know that space is a hostile environment, but Murrayfield, the

:01:06. > :01:10.old Calcutta Cup, that's a different matter. This great old rivalry has

:01:11. > :01:15.none to match this. Scotland has fire a in their belly, you could

:01:16. > :01:26.hear their rage from up here in space. As for England... After the

:01:27. > :01:31.darkness comes the light, a fresh start, new faces and hopes

:01:32. > :01:37.rekindled. Dylan Hartley has been named captain ahead of the Six

:01:38. > :01:42.Nations... Here we go. England shirt, check, and somewhere out here

:01:43. > :01:53.I'm sure there is a set of bagpipes so may the best team win.

:01:54. > :01:58.Don't mention the World Cup, a brave new world for English rugby stars

:01:59. > :02:02.here. The normally quick talking, wisecracking, winning, smiling Eddie

:02:03. > :02:09.Jones arrives stern faced at Murrayfield as England's Australian

:02:10. > :02:12.saviour. Rarely has a Calcutta Cup been so eagerly anticipated, with

:02:13. > :02:17.Scotland resurgent but also seething after the World Cup heartbreak. For

:02:18. > :02:23.New England, Murrayfield today is not the final frontier, it is the

:02:24. > :02:27.first. It is the second match of the RBS Six Nations of this

:02:28. > :02:31.championship, and the first was extraordinary. The Italians would be

:02:32. > :02:39.kicking themselves if they wouldn't miss, but France snuck a victory, it

:02:40. > :02:43.was wholly undeserved. 23-21, meaning they are the leaders at the

:02:44. > :02:54.moment. There are so many talking points on this match here today,

:02:55. > :03:00.with our panel of experts. Jerry, how excited are you about what Eddie

:03:01. > :03:03.Jones' regime might bring? I'm excited to see what he's doing

:03:04. > :03:08.differently because essentially it is the same team that was under the

:03:09. > :03:11.past management regime so we are seeing what is he doing

:03:12. > :03:16.psychologically, what ownership of the game is he giving to this squad

:03:17. > :03:21.of players. Comes with a huge reputation and we want to see a

:03:22. > :03:27.transformed into this English squad. Tim Peake spoke about Scotland's

:03:28. > :03:32.ambition, the frustration obviously, but the ambition, is it based on

:03:33. > :03:37.solid foundations? We saw an attacking game in the World Cup that

:03:38. > :03:41.was good and a real togetherness in the squad. In the circumstances they

:03:42. > :03:45.got knocked out of the World Cup there is a real for Scotland should

:03:46. > :03:49.have been in the semifinal so this is the first time they can go back

:03:50. > :03:56.out there and prove it wasn't just a flash in the pan, and they are

:03:57. > :04:01.forced to be reckoned with. Mike, what is it that separates this game

:04:02. > :04:06.from other matches? It is a unique atmosphere. You talk about when you

:04:07. > :04:12.go to New Zealand, it is uncomfortable to go and walk around,

:04:13. > :04:17.it is sort of like that in Scotland. The players might go out for a copy,

:04:18. > :04:21.you can see people having a snide comment at you, you are going to

:04:22. > :04:26.lose today. That is what you deal with north of the border, there is

:04:27. > :04:33.that hostility, the edge on and off the field. I have had a lot of bad

:04:34. > :04:37.times here, a Grand Slam lost here, it is difficult. Scotland will raise

:04:38. > :04:41.their game, and they will be tough to beat. If you look at the facts

:04:42. > :04:46.and figures surrounding this much there's not a lot of consolation for

:04:47. > :04:53.Scotland, not least in their opening performance of the Six Nations. They

:04:54. > :04:58.have lost 15 out of 16 matches so that is cold comfort at the very

:04:59. > :05:04.least. Anyway their coach is now with Sonia.

:05:05. > :05:08.The nature of the Six Nations means winning your opening game is

:05:09. > :05:13.important, how optimistic value given how strong Scotland finished

:05:14. > :05:19.in the World Cup? There's no guarantees we had a reasonably

:05:20. > :05:23.satisfactory World Cup. England have something to prove and they will be

:05:24. > :05:27.tough to beat today. We want to play a reasonable game of rugby, we think

:05:28. > :05:33.this team can improve. It doesn't give any guarantees but the players

:05:34. > :05:37.are excited about today's game and it will be what it will be I

:05:38. > :05:45.suppose. Have you encouraged the players to park the pain of losing

:05:46. > :05:50.or channel it into the Six Nations? Obviously they will channel it, it

:05:51. > :05:55.is just what you learn from most types of situations and how you move

:05:56. > :05:58.forward. You cannot do anything about the ones you lose but you can

:05:59. > :06:06.do something about the ones you would like to win next. You said the

:06:07. > :06:11.nature of the Six Nations was a surprise to you so what do you think

:06:12. > :06:15.is in store for Eddie Jones today? They will be getting behind the

:06:16. > :06:20.players and the team, and hopefully we can keep it close and the crowd

:06:21. > :06:26.will help. The luck today. We saw the match in

:06:27. > :06:31.Paris this afternoon that goal-kicking can still win and lose

:06:32. > :06:38.matches and if this game is tight goal-kicking can be key, and Greig

:06:39. > :06:50.Laidlaw has an outstanding 80% success rate. It is the kicking that

:06:51. > :06:55.still haunts the Scottish captain. It has come off an Australian

:06:56. > :07:01.player! Australia have got this much now under their control. We put so

:07:02. > :07:04.much effort into the game and to lose like that was heartbreaking for

:07:05. > :07:09.everyone concerned from the Scottish perspective. How do you turn that

:07:10. > :07:16.into something positive going forward? Concentration is important

:07:17. > :07:21.to us because sometimes we feel we lack concentration for the full

:07:22. > :07:29.match. Is it important we treat this as just another game? It isn't just

:07:30. > :07:32.another game, it is special but I believe you need to distance

:07:33. > :07:38.yourself from some of that stuff and it is a good opportunity to run out

:07:39. > :07:42.in front of the fans. At the World Cup they gave such great support and

:07:43. > :07:47.to play at home in Murrayfield there is no better feeling. We need to

:07:48. > :07:53.harness that, go out there and express ourselves. When we get to

:07:54. > :07:59.the end of this championship, what would mean success to you? The last

:08:00. > :08:05.time we finished bottom, we are desperate to avoid that this time.

:08:06. > :08:10.We cannot look past the first game, it is so important regardless who it

:08:11. > :08:13.is and this time it is England. If we concentrate on ourselves and get

:08:14. > :08:21.that right, we feel we will be in the hunt to win games. Outline

:08:22. > :08:32.Scotland's cautious optimism. It is a high-quality side. Maybe they have

:08:33. > :08:39.been overlooked in the controversial way Scotland got knocked out of the

:08:40. > :08:46.World Cup. Their defence has not been great. Only Italy have conceded

:08:47. > :08:53.more on average per game. If you are conceding 23, that is a difficult

:08:54. > :08:58.way to win games. The last three games, they were conceding an

:08:59. > :09:05.average 34 points. You will not win games conceding that. There is some

:09:06. > :09:08.optimism for you! Glad I asked that question. But they have the

:09:09. > :09:15.attacking game which they hadn't had. They have the attack, they can

:09:16. > :09:20.easily get the defence back and if they do that today they have the

:09:21. > :09:28.whole package. You concede 23, it means you have got to score 24 or

:09:29. > :09:34.31. With Bennett, does Scotland have that cutting edge that they haven't

:09:35. > :09:39.had in years gone by? We will be watching closely Joseph against

:09:40. > :09:44.Bennett, both attack minded, both can score tries, both able to beat

:09:45. > :09:50.defenders and that brings another edge to Scotland's game. Scott and

:09:51. > :09:53.Bennett are forming a really good partnership that can take them into

:09:54. > :09:59.the games like this with much more confidence. Let's move on to England

:10:00. > :10:04.for a moment. I don't know how many interviews you have seen about Eddie

:10:05. > :10:08.Jones in the last few weeks, but you haven't seen an interview with him

:10:09. > :10:13.on match day, which is coming up in a moment, but here is how we got to

:10:14. > :10:18.the situation. These are the changing faces but not the changing

:10:19. > :10:25.hairline of Eddie Jones, through being the mastermind of South

:10:26. > :10:29.Africa's World Cup in 2007, then Saracens, then to Japan, and of

:10:30. > :10:35.course you find yourself in charge of England.

:10:36. > :10:42.You are an old hand at test rugby but what are the emotions today?

:10:43. > :10:48.Pretty excited. It was nice driving in the bus today with the Scottish

:10:49. > :10:55.supporters giving us stick! You have picked a team that looks remarkably

:10:56. > :11:00.like the old one so what different can fans expect today? Hopefully we

:11:01. > :11:06.will see a more attacking mindset, we are looking forward to the game.

:11:07. > :11:09.You have resisted temptation to Lord newcomers, what does that say about

:11:10. > :11:21.what you are expecting from Scotland? -- blood newcomers. We

:11:22. > :11:28.have picked our best 23 and the young players will get their

:11:29. > :11:37.opportunity later on. And you came here yesterday to watch some players

:11:38. > :11:40.kicking, what was that like? They are very dedicated players. Clearly

:11:41. > :11:49.Dylan Hartley will be a very central figure, educated in Sussex, 66 caps,

:11:50. > :11:51.lots of suspensions, England captain.

:11:52. > :11:58.Your appointment has been controversial, did you know it would

:11:59. > :12:04.be? Of course, of course, why wouldn't it be? There's plenty to

:12:05. > :12:10.talk about, isn't there? Dylan Hartley has been suspended for two

:12:11. > :12:21.weeks... Northampton hooker Dylan Hartley... 12 weeks for biting, 11

:12:22. > :12:31.weeks for swearing... Are you surprised Eddie Jones chose you?

:12:32. > :12:39.Yes, of course I am. But if you strip it back again, I can see maybe

:12:40. > :12:44.why. I've got experience doing the job at club level, I know how to

:12:45. > :12:49.lead a team. I have no regrets. My career is my career, it is my life

:12:50. > :12:53.and all these things that have happened, they are life lessons that

:12:54. > :12:57.made me the person, the player I am. I like to feel I am pretty

:12:58. > :13:02.resilient, otherwise I wouldn't be sitting here talking to you. To be

:13:03. > :13:10.back is hugely satisfying because I knew I could get back here. Is this

:13:11. > :13:17.the biggest week of your career? I'm trying not to think that, I'm trying

:13:18. > :13:20.not to get caught up in this, in the whole captaincy, I'm just trying to

:13:21. > :13:26.worry about myself and be the best player I can. Who is the real Dylan

:13:27. > :13:37.Hartley? Because a lot of people don't know you. The perception is my

:13:38. > :13:42.own fault, I am smart enough to know that, I have created that. I keep

:13:43. > :13:48.pointing over there to the rap sheet, it is not there, the left

:13:49. > :13:52.side of the brain, the memory! And I understand that. All I can do is

:13:53. > :13:59.worry about myself, and when I meet people like you, try to change

:14:00. > :14:04.perceptions. What's the point in playing for Northampton or England

:14:05. > :14:08.if you don't want to when? I just love it, but then off the field

:14:09. > :14:14.there is two different sides. I don't know what the real one is, it

:14:15. > :14:21.is just one person, competitive. For want of a better option, let's

:14:22. > :14:25.talking about compromising with the confrontational hookers. Do you

:14:26. > :14:31.think this is a good appointment from the England perspective? It is

:14:32. > :14:38.a risk, but misses Dylan Hartley's last chance. If he gets this wrong,

:14:39. > :14:44.he won't get picked again. -- this is his last chance. Eddie Jones has

:14:45. > :14:48.put faith in him, he has shown leadership in that sense, and now

:14:49. > :14:54.Dylan Hartley has got to do the same. It is simple really. Mike you

:14:55. > :14:58.have played with him and against him on numerous occasions, is there a

:14:59. > :15:05.bit of Martin Johnson in him in terms of the over the top follow me

:15:06. > :15:13.leader? I think so, as he tried to get across there, he is not very

:15:14. > :15:20.well understood character. On the field, no retreat, and that is what

:15:21. > :15:24.I want in a hooker. But at the same time he has got to show he is

:15:25. > :15:29.developing with that. He has got to deal with the fact he has had his

:15:30. > :15:34.concussion, he hasn't played much rugby, he has got to put a

:15:35. > :15:39.performance down first and foremost. In the World Cup England's rugby was

:15:40. > :15:44.criticised, he statistically the best hooker we have got. Is this

:15:45. > :15:51.really a risk or is it media inflation? Media inflation 100%.

:15:52. > :15:58.England know that when Dylan is around in the scrum, it is robust,

:15:59. > :16:06.in the line-out he nails it. He has more to worry about in terms of

:16:07. > :16:12.keeping his spot, not the captaincy. Jamie George is having a fantastic

:16:13. > :16:18.season. He is not focusing on the captaincy. He is a leader anyway, he

:16:19. > :16:24.has captained Northampton how many times, he just needs to focus on

:16:25. > :16:28.doing his job. From the Scottish perspective, when you look at the

:16:29. > :16:33.England team, do you think meet the new boss, same as the old boss?

:16:34. > :16:40.There's not many changes. England have moved six or seven around from

:16:41. > :16:47.Haskell, Robshaw, different position same players. There is a real battle

:16:48. > :16:51.on the back row today. There is so much history about this game and any

:16:52. > :16:58.excuse to trawl the archives so let's do that now with one of

:16:59. > :17:07.Scotland's's finest. Gavin Hastings, full-back. 61 caps for Scotland.

:17:08. > :17:14.Scotland versus England, passion, brilliance, and the atmosphere. You

:17:15. > :17:18.really didn't need to motivate yourself at all for any England

:17:19. > :17:22.game. Seeing the red rose on the left breast of the England shirts

:17:23. > :17:30.and the pristine white jerseys and all you wanted to do was make sure

:17:31. > :17:35.you made them as bloody and muddy as early as possible. A Scottish

:17:36. > :17:41.victory over England in the Calcutta Cup is a special thing. My first

:17:42. > :17:46.season, we won 33-6, on that occasion I kicked eight out of

:17:47. > :17:55.eight. That was just an amazing occasion. Of course I suppose the

:17:56. > :18:08.game that people still talk about, the 1990 Grand Slam match, it was an

:18:09. > :18:14.amazing game. At 13-7 it was very, very close. It was a heck of a night

:18:15. > :18:19.and even now people come up and pat you on the back, but my goodness 26

:18:20. > :18:22.years ago is far too long and it would be nice to think another Grand

:18:23. > :18:29.Slam is round the corner for Scotland. That's the scene just a

:18:30. > :18:37.few moments before kick-off here at Murrayfield. Jerry, you have many

:18:38. > :18:47.memories of Calcutta Cups don't you? Yes, Gavin missing a penalty,

:18:48. > :18:51.scoring the tries, you didn't show that on those Beattie 's but Gavin

:18:52. > :19:01.was a world-class player and he is asking for a little bit more with

:19:02. > :19:09.the Scottish Grand Slam. -- on those Beatties.

:19:10. > :19:14.The fantastic noise, and intimidating noise as Mike Tindall

:19:15. > :19:19.was saying a few moments ago. I suppose from the point Andy was

:19:20. > :19:24.making a few moments ago, it is not an experience that hardly any of

:19:25. > :19:31.those English players have not been through many times before. Exactly,

:19:32. > :19:36.there are hostile places to go and play, Wales being one, Murrayfield

:19:37. > :19:41.being another. They know what to expect, you know what cauldron you

:19:42. > :19:46.are going into. You know that if you don't start while the pressure will

:19:47. > :19:49.build on you. They are professional athletes, they are prepared, you

:19:50. > :19:54.have done your training, you have just got to go and deliver. One of

:19:55. > :19:58.the great traditions of this fixture is that a member of Mike Tindall's

:19:59. > :20:05.family meet the teams before the game and that will happen here, the

:20:06. > :20:15.Princess Royal. From a Scottish perspective, two years ago this was

:20:16. > :20:19.a shocking spectacle. People were saying they were too emotional, they

:20:20. > :20:25.had almost played the game before it had kicked off. How do you take the

:20:26. > :20:31.emotion out of a fixture like this? You need to keep some in, it is

:20:32. > :20:36.finding the balance. You want to be on edge, you want to be up for it

:20:37. > :20:41.but not over the top. That means your decision-making is poor, you

:20:42. > :20:45.are going into things, over committing in defence sometimes just

:20:46. > :20:50.because you are so excited to make an impact. It has got to be calm,

:20:51. > :20:58.with control, making sure you do the right things early on. From my

:20:59. > :21:02.perspective, you look at Scotland in full tracksuits. How I would handle

:21:03. > :21:08.it, walk away, take your time, take off your tracksuits, start from

:21:09. > :21:14.there and then fire up your emotions, then kick-off. For one

:21:15. > :21:18.player in particular, today is almost a chance to rebuild

:21:19. > :21:22.themselves, and that is Chris Robshaw. So much written about him

:21:23. > :21:26.after the World Cup about the captaincy decisions made during it,

:21:27. > :21:32.he is now being picked effectively on merit as a player. How big an

:21:33. > :21:37.occasion is this for him? I think the monkey of captaincy is off his

:21:38. > :21:43.back, he can concentrate on how he plays. His work ethic is second to

:21:44. > :21:49.none. His tackles, the ball carrying he does, and the passing to keep the

:21:50. > :21:55.ball going. He is the Silent worker in the side, and you need that. You

:21:56. > :22:00.need the person to keep the team thrusting forward, to keep the

:22:01. > :22:06.momentum. I hope he has a good game for his country. Hopefully what a

:22:07. > :22:14.difference in number will make, the relief of not wearing the number

:22:15. > :22:19.seven, the comfortable hug of the number six jersey. Let's hope he's

:22:20. > :22:25.not at sixes and sevens! How optimistic are you, Chris? I

:22:26. > :22:29.have listened to the comments so far and I'm encouraged by what Scotland

:22:30. > :22:32.did during the World Cup but ultimately it ended in defeat.

:22:33. > :22:39.Scotland have a settled side with good decision-makers at number nine

:22:40. > :22:44.and ten. It will be interesting to see what they were saying about

:22:45. > :22:49.Chris Robshaw, but Scotland's battle in and around the breakdown is

:22:50. > :22:56.always key to whether they win or lose. It is important for them to

:22:57. > :23:04.get on the front foot and get Scotland's attacking game going. If

:23:05. > :23:10.they do a good job on the breakdown, Scotland will need a plant be that

:23:11. > :23:14.they have not had to go to recently. We haven't mentioned Danny Care at

:23:15. > :23:19.number nine, England's playmaker today who has gone from third to

:23:20. > :23:25.first in the pecking order. How influential could he be today? He is

:23:26. > :23:32.everything. A couple of seasons ago he was absolutely brilliant, then he

:23:33. > :23:39.was dropped to nowhere. He has been playing really well for Harlequins.

:23:40. > :23:44.It was a strange selection for me because Ben Youngs is a better

:23:45. > :23:50.kicking scrum-half, whereas Danny Care is quick to go to breakdown. It

:23:51. > :24:02.sets a tone of how England want to play. In the autumn you could see

:24:03. > :24:07.they picked the best, Wigglesworth and Hopkins. Danny Care will be

:24:08. > :24:12.sniping around the corner. Danny Care will set the tempo. And his

:24:13. > :24:16.attitude, it is another example of Eddie Jones bringing a player with a

:24:17. > :24:23.bit of edge to him, a bit of attitude. He is confrontational and

:24:24. > :24:27.I think you will see Danny Care get into people's faces today. The

:24:28. > :24:34.winner for you, Gerry? Scotland, just. You have changed your mind

:24:35. > :24:40.completely! As I have just picked myself up the floor, I will go

:24:41. > :24:47.Scotland as well. The time is right for them to get the victory in the

:24:48. > :24:53.opening week of the Six Nations. My thigh blood still runs red so I am

:24:54. > :24:58.going England all the way. It is the oldest international fixture of them

:24:59. > :25:03.all, dating back to 1871, and here is the latest instalment, which you

:25:04. > :25:08.can share with our commentary team after the anthems.

:25:09. > :26:15.# Your wee bit hill and glen # And stood against him

:26:16. > :26:29.# And sent him homeward # Tae think again.

:26:30. > :26:34.# And autumn leaves lie thick and still.

:26:35. > :26:51.# Proud Edward's army # And sent him homeward

:26:52. > :27:22.What a way for these rivals to begin the Six Nations. The World Cup ended

:27:23. > :27:29.for both of them in different kinds of frustration, the passions are

:27:30. > :27:40.running high. There is a new man steering the way for England, and it

:27:41. > :27:46.is a settled side for Scotland. Nel, the cornerstone of the scrum. Denton

:27:47. > :27:53.train to offer more than just his big ball carrying at number eight.

:27:54. > :28:13.Bennett is recovering from a shoulder knock, and a lively back

:28:14. > :28:17.free, -- three, Hogg at full-back. Forget the numbers, says James

:28:18. > :28:24.Haskell, it is all about the balance. In the back's scrum-half,

:28:25. > :28:36.Danny Care comes back in from the cold. Joseph was leading try scorer

:28:37. > :28:48.in last year's championship. Outside him, very young wings in Watson and

:28:49. > :28:57.Nowell. Look at the replacements as well, so important in modern rugby.

:28:58. > :29:08.Three possible debuts for England in Hill, Clifford and Devoto. The noise

:29:09. > :29:17.continues to grow, and England will kick off. They won the toss and

:29:18. > :29:22.decided to do that. It really is as keenly awaited as any Calcutta Cup

:29:23. > :29:35.match in the last 20 years. The referee for this one from Ireland is

:29:36. > :29:41.John Lacey. We hope this delivers unmatched to equal the anticipation.

:29:42. > :29:45.The Calcutta Cup 2016 is under way. Good conditions at Murrayfield, and

:29:46. > :30:00.a good take early on from Seymour on the wing.

:30:01. > :30:08.A lot of chatter to the referee already.

:30:09. > :30:21.These are the feverish, mad moments, as well. You are just looking to

:30:22. > :30:23.settle in. You are. They coped with the kick-off, and got around. Taking

:30:24. > :30:49.the ball in the air, and safely out. Did it go backwards? The referee

:30:50. > :30:55.looked and said it was fine. The whistle-blowers, there was a

:30:56. > :31:02.knock-on and England have the scrum and a bright start. A well executed

:31:03. > :31:16.line-out. Vunipola hit a get hard up the field. A good challenge. Owen

:31:17. > :31:28.Farrell. This will be an interesting area. The England scrummage, before

:31:29. > :31:32.and during the World Cup was awful. Scotland's Nel had a great World Cup

:31:33. > :31:51.and it is for him to do a job on Marler.

:31:52. > :32:14.You are supposed to be completely still before the ball comes in. A

:32:15. > :32:15.statement from Dylan Hartley. The sound around Murrayfield, it is

:32:16. > :32:40.English singing at the moment. It went straight to Robshaw's feat.

:32:41. > :32:46.Scotland responding. John Lacey said, use it. A bit of a mix-up.

:32:47. > :32:51.Almost stolen, but forward it went. The first knock-on by English

:32:52. > :32:55.handss. Scotland will have the scrum. The England attack not

:32:56. > :33:06.working. George Ford knocking on from a stable scrum. Bringing in

:33:07. > :33:13.Jonathan Joseph. Trying to fix the quick defence from Scotland then.

:33:14. > :33:20.England are confused. Are they going for a penalty in the scrum, are they

:33:21. > :33:24.going for all from which to attack? They seem to go for the former and

:33:25. > :33:36.hat to accept the secondary. Better to do one or the other.

:33:37. > :33:58.Danny Care's feed. Backslaps all round. Maitland has galloped into

:33:59. > :34:03.say a hearty congratulations. Such a strength, in the Scotland World Cup

:34:04. > :34:14.campaign, that front row. If you are a clubmate... You can spend time,

:34:15. > :34:17.and the familiarity is important because when the pressure comes on

:34:18. > :34:27.you know exactly how people are just. Stern Vern Cotter. He is

:34:28. > :34:31.actually quite a smiley fellow. He hides it beneath the surface. The

:34:32. > :34:42.first line-out test for Scotland. The Gray brothers. Laidlaw sending

:34:43. > :34:49.it down the wing. Launchbury was their for England. Browne tried to

:34:50. > :35:01.skip his way through. Taken down well by Matt Scott. Nervous moments

:35:02. > :35:06.for England. You have played these games, this has got the typical

:35:07. > :35:12.hallmark of a frenetic Calcutta Cup, the first ten minutes where everyone

:35:13. > :35:16.is trying to do things at 100 mph. You need to settle down and play in

:35:17. > :35:23.normal fashion. At the moment people are rushing things. And the

:35:24. > :35:37.atmosphere is electric. We can hardly hear each other.

:35:38. > :35:47.Into touch and quickly taken by England. Will this open something

:35:48. > :36:00.up? There was no way through for Mike Brown. The penalty to England.

:36:01. > :36:07.A good chance to clear. That is frustrating for Scotland. It needs a

:36:08. > :36:14.calm head and Danny Care took the quick throw. England trying to play

:36:15. > :36:19.at tempo. I am quite surprised. I have no problem with England playing

:36:20. > :36:24.with ambition. But you have to play sensibly. If you give away penalties

:36:25. > :36:28.for things he would ordinarily avoid, in the first game, which is

:36:29. > :36:44.so important, ambition has to be tempered. Taken well by George

:36:45. > :36:49.Cruise. Anthony Watson stumbled. A bit of life in the England attack.

:36:50. > :37:02.Dangerous players and dangerous backs. England are trying to get

:37:03. > :37:15.their hands... More decoy runners. Tommy Seymour, the left wing, a lot

:37:16. > :37:25.of space out wide to attack. Ross Ford, his 95th cap. REFEREE: Both

:37:26. > :37:32.sides need to respect space. Calming words from John Lacey. Gray V

:37:33. > :37:37.Younger. Not straight, says John Lacey.

:37:38. > :37:50.He was marginally. Straight. -- not straight.

:37:51. > :38:01.The scrums are absurd in the put-ins but occasionally the referee world.

:38:02. > :38:15.The tight head has two lead in. That means the right-hand prop for both

:38:16. > :38:33.packs needs to be in front of the hooker.

:38:34. > :38:40.Jack Nowell, maybe a first receiver, an option. Scotland with the initial

:38:41. > :38:50.shove and then England comeback. Vunipola gave it to Nowell. Standing

:38:51. > :38:54.up to the challenge from Laidlaw. Robshaw piling in. England making

:38:55. > :39:01.ground. That was picked up well by Haskell.

:39:02. > :39:05.Vunipola, the mighty man at number eight. England came in numbers

:39:06. > :39:27.again. Danny Care, again. Launchbury is under pressure.

:39:28. > :39:33.England punched back for just a moment. A stout Scottish defence for

:39:34. > :39:49.now. England bide their time. Through the phases, into double

:39:50. > :39:57.figures. A drop goal attempt from Ford. It looked good for a moment.

:39:58. > :40:02.The booing turned to cheering. It was almost as if running out of

:40:03. > :40:09.ideas and a chance to get across the gain line. You don't want to do with

:40:10. > :40:13.what has happened, come away with nothing. Three points is a

:40:14. > :40:20.reasonable reward and they should have got that. It was pretty close.

:40:21. > :40:28.Credit to the Scottish defence, keeping discipline. Mike Brown took

:40:29. > :40:45.the restart. Ford, dummying away to his heart's

:40:46. > :40:47.content. Wide to Nowell. Chipping and chasing it down himself. Hogg

:40:48. > :41:02.under pressure. A five metre scrum to England.

:41:03. > :41:08.Stuart Hogg praying, please get over the line before I have to touch it.

:41:09. > :41:14.Nowell did well. Really well done. So sharp. A fantastic player.

:41:15. > :41:22.Dangerous with ball in hand. There was space on the left for England to

:41:23. > :41:30.attack. An important part of the game. England have had three, four

:41:31. > :41:42.minutes of good pressure. If England go over it will be reward and if

:41:43. > :41:49.Scotland keep the map, -- keep them out, that is a psychological boost

:41:50. > :42:17.for them. As good a position as England have had.

:42:18. > :42:26.Dan Cole and Alasdair Dickinson are pre-engaged. Tim Peake is explaining

:42:27. > :42:34.that to his Russian and American colleagues! Five metres. What a

:42:35. > :43:00.position. No quarter given by either side.

:43:01. > :43:11.Vunipola! England still have it. George Cruise gets hold of it for

:43:12. > :43:15.the drive. -- Kruis. Forward pressure and power from England

:43:16. > :43:22.brings them the first squaw and George Cruise is the man to get it

:43:23. > :43:30.down. -- Kruis. As soon as Vunipola gets beyond the back foot. You can

:43:31. > :43:35.see the Scottish second rows. They get out in time but they are not

:43:36. > :43:43.quite aided. Actually, they were in position, they missed the tackles.

:43:44. > :43:49.Richie Gray. As Kruis gets low. Driving towards the line. That came

:43:50. > :43:52.from a quality set piece and clear understanding of the role that after

:43:53. > :43:58.the initial set piece you get around the corner. What England have

:43:59. > :44:05.demonstrated, they know what they want to do. It may not always work.

:44:06. > :44:10.What they did not do in many World Cup games was play with an air of

:44:11. > :44:17.certainty and they are doing that at the moment. Farrell, and the extra

:44:18. > :44:24.two points. Kruis win his first international try, much to Eddie

:44:25. > :44:32.Jones'... Not obvious delight, but it is in there somewhere. Richie

:44:33. > :44:40.Gray is a big man. He did not get low enough in the tackle. Looked

:44:41. > :44:47.like the Japanese scrum we saw in the World Cup, solo and tight. It is

:44:48. > :44:49.important now for Scotland to register something fairly quickly

:44:50. > :44:58.because they have been under pressure for two thirds of the game

:44:59. > :45:05.so far. Stuart Hogg, stopped by Watson.

:45:06. > :45:25.Advantage to Scotland. Penalty. It is some distance out.

:45:26. > :45:37.It is really important. An important counterattack, as Brian Moore said.

:45:38. > :45:42.Robshaw. He is trying to get out of the way, but he knows where he is.

:45:43. > :45:50.The benefit of the doubt, in that situation, should not be given to

:45:51. > :45:54.the defensive player. Talking about how both these sides have superb

:45:55. > :46:03.kickers. Farrell. And this man, Laidlaw. Not the longest kicker.

:46:04. > :46:11.Scotland needed to get points. How often do teams do this? Penalty

:46:12. > :46:13.straightaway. Has it cost England? It has, it was a sweet, sweet

:46:14. > :46:31.strike. It was a beautiful strike. He has

:46:32. > :46:44.kicked at 93, 94% in the Six Nations.

:46:45. > :47:06.Brown taken down by Matt Scott, but England still win it. It was a good

:47:07. > :47:10.take, in the end, by Ford. Russell. Just about stands his ground.

:47:11. > :47:17.Vunipola and Farrell having their full attention.

:47:18. > :47:25.Three or four England defenders. The pace of the game is brisk. Gaps

:47:26. > :47:36.almost appearing. Given to Denton to do his

:47:37. > :47:57.destructive thing. Still with Scotland and the pace is

:47:58. > :48:12.picked up. Laidlaw feeding it out wide. Advantage again to Scotland.

:48:13. > :48:21.Laidlaw flinging it out, hopefully to Maitland.

:48:22. > :48:29.Hogg scrabbling on and there is the penalty. No real advantage coming as

:48:30. > :48:35.they went through the phases. From just about the same position,

:48:36. > :48:41.another penalty for Scotland. That was clever play from Scotland. They

:48:42. > :48:46.held onto the ball. Mike Brown was back there. Vunipola has been back

:48:47. > :48:54.there, so they knew giving the ball back to England was not the thing to

:48:55. > :49:02.do. A tight angle. Not going for goal. He tried to give himself an

:49:03. > :49:12.angle. Scotland have the line-out just outside the England 22.

:49:13. > :49:37.Taken down by Jonny Gray and back in play. To within five metres. Hardie

:49:38. > :49:43.feeds Jonny Gray. The crowd is rising to a roar. It is lost and

:49:44. > :49:53.England have it. The noise dies away. England have the penalty. That

:49:54. > :49:58.is what... You talk about discipline, it does not mean not

:49:59. > :50:04.belting people, it means being accurate, not spilling the ball and

:50:05. > :50:07.not giving the opportunity for things like this to happen.

:50:08. > :50:18.Scotland, in attention has cost them a lot. A wonderful tackle.

:50:19. > :50:28.Then going back on the ball. Within the turnover. He is on the ball. He

:50:29. > :50:39.realises his right foot is in the air. You let go. Where did he go?

:50:40. > :50:50.Over. -- oh. I think England were lucky. All sorts of covert misdeeds.

:50:51. > :51:14.A good opening quarter of the match. A slip in the Scottish defence. The

:51:15. > :51:26.ball bounced high over Hogg. Under all sorts of pressure. Taking a hit

:51:27. > :51:32.around the shoulders. Cries of discipline amidst the chaos.

:51:33. > :51:36.Scotland deep in defence of work. Mike Brown is there. He takes it and

:51:37. > :51:53.plays it. Not given a chance, and a boot is

:51:54. > :51:59.lost. England again. Nowell is out there. Mike Brown cuts in and a

:52:00. > :52:28.penalty. A side entry. Penalised again for the side entry.

:52:29. > :52:34.It is so obvious. When you talk about all-round skills, full-backs,

:52:35. > :52:42.it is also being effective in the breakdown. It is being able to

:52:43. > :52:47.handle in tight areas. When England have kicked, it has been in the

:52:48. > :52:52.opposition half and they have kicked well and chased well under attacking

:52:53. > :53:03.situations. They have moved the ball reasonably, as well.

:53:04. > :53:28.Scotland again with territory. Barclay is playing blindside flanker

:53:29. > :53:41.today. Penalty to England. Both sides are

:53:42. > :53:56.guilty. If you decide to switch direction on

:53:57. > :54:05.the hoof, the people supporting, they are off patent. Only a second,

:54:06. > :54:11.these days and you are in trouble. Andy Dickel, your thoughts? The game

:54:12. > :54:15.has burst into life in the last ten minutes and both sides are trying to

:54:16. > :54:21.get the ball to the strike Carruthers. Watson, Nowell, Hogg,

:54:22. > :54:30.Maitland. Scotland have been sloppy in the contact. They need to control

:54:31. > :54:35.back. It is building up to a good game. We got a glimpse is of the

:54:36. > :54:43.newer members of the coaching staff then. Including Steve Borthwick, who

:54:44. > :54:45.is working with the forwards. The line-out did not go according to

:54:46. > :54:55.plan but Robshaw was there. Kruis, trying to lay it back. But

:54:56. > :55:27.all sorts of mayhem. Russell thought he saw space over

:55:28. > :55:34.the head of Watson and that was a beautifully directed kick from Finn

:55:35. > :55:38.Russell. That is the balance of the guys in the studio talked about

:55:39. > :55:43.before the game. Really well caught by Stuart Hogg but the workrate from

:55:44. > :55:52.the players off the ball for Scotland to get back.

:55:53. > :56:03.They need to augment lactic by being properly competitive. Both line-outs

:56:04. > :56:08.have been secured. The forwards need to do their job and challenge

:56:09. > :56:16.successfully the ball. Dylan Hartley the best line-out record in the

:56:17. > :56:22.Premiership, 93%. Without players like Tom Croft. And you look at the

:56:23. > :56:23.Gray brothers, a daunting prospect. But the England line-out so far is

:56:24. > :56:31.very impressive. Hogg was waiting again. Seymour

:56:32. > :57:08.chasing it down. The penalty to Scotland. That was a

:57:09. > :57:16.good kick and good chase. It was a correct penalty. Ford was brave but

:57:17. > :57:27.after taking the catch he was under pressure from Seymour. Here he is

:57:28. > :57:34.with the tackle. Hogg came in. We can watch George Ford. Trying to buy

:57:35. > :57:39.himself time. What Hogg did well, quite often you see players rolling

:57:40. > :57:47.over the top, but he fought hard so that did not happen.

:57:48. > :58:15.He overcooked it. Come the end of the game, these may well prove

:58:16. > :58:24.invaluable. I do not think he realised it missed! People now! --

:58:25. > :58:29.he will now. Just a little bit too quick, maybe

:58:30. > :59:06.that one. Everyone taking a breather on the

:59:07. > :59:11.half-hour mark. A try from Kruis. A penalty for Scotland from Laidlaw,

:59:12. > :59:25.but a rare miss. It was not the easiest kick. Ford taking V-22

:59:26. > :59:33.restart. -- the 22. It looked like a late hit from Hardie.

:59:34. > :00:19.That was sent long, taken by Ford. Watson.

:00:20. > :00:31.A little bit of space. Hardie straightens things up. He thought

:00:32. > :00:37.about the offload. Nel was read by Haskell. Russell delayed and gave it

:00:38. > :01:07.to Jonny Gray. Laidlaw just bides his time. Slower

:01:08. > :01:17.ball to play with, just teasing it back. Laidlaw with the box-kick, and

:01:18. > :01:30.Brown waiting and fielding so well, casually lays it back to Danny Care.

:01:31. > :01:35.It found its way back to touch. Mike Brown just runs onto it, galloping

:01:36. > :01:54.forward, taken down by his opposite number. Curious passage of play,

:01:55. > :02:04.Vunipola. Care complains, then feeds Marler.

:02:05. > :02:16.Haskell decides to give it to Vunipola again. The turnover is

:02:17. > :02:20.good, says John Lacey. Stolen by Scotland, then a long pass might

:02:21. > :02:29.bring dividends. It floats to see more.

:02:30. > :02:39.Back they come for the first knock-on, which is Scotland's. Some

:02:40. > :02:44.messy bits in there as well but both sides breathing hard. So many

:02:45. > :02:52.turnovers back and forward, back and forward. One interesting thing that

:02:53. > :03:01.has come out for me, the breakdown is really messy but the ball carrier

:03:02. > :03:05.has given time in attack. They are coming at a more gradual pace and

:03:06. > :03:15.allowing the passes to be given. Also usually the centre forward

:03:16. > :03:27.hairs up, at the moment they are just saying we don't want to get out

:03:28. > :03:33.worked on the flank. It is traditionally safer on defence.

:03:34. > :03:52.There have been some big hits. Greig Laidlaw. John Hardie comes in as

:03:53. > :03:57.well, such a hard hitter. His knock-on was a deciding factor to

:03:58. > :04:03.hinder that phase. A couple of injuries to players who are back

:04:04. > :04:10.with us. John Lacey, just muttering away to the front row. When you look

:04:11. > :04:16.at those semilegal hits, they are not much as you see there but if you

:04:17. > :04:22.choose as a player to go that high, if it goes against you you cannot

:04:23. > :04:28.complain. Let's see how the scrum fares. It is pretty evenly

:04:29. > :04:34.contested, England getting a squeeze. Laidlaw comes in, tries to

:04:35. > :04:40.get a hand on it, and the penalty goes to Scotland. Vunipola thought

:04:41. > :04:45.he still had the ball in there and as Greig Laidlaw came in he was

:04:46. > :04:50.obstructed and there is the penalty. He is pointing to his shoulder, and

:04:51. > :05:03.the binding in the scrum as to be with a shoulder and arm, it cannot

:05:04. > :05:19.just be with the hand. A kick to touch, it looks like a pretty decent

:05:20. > :05:26.one. Good work by Laidlaw. It briefly disappeared outside his hind

:05:27. > :05:38.foot there. That is all it needs. Denton takes it down, with Scotland

:05:39. > :05:44.trying to get a maul. We haven't seen too many in this game. See more

:05:45. > :05:52.coming in off his wing, and spilled at the end and England will have it.

:05:53. > :06:02.Watson did really well there. Enough strength to rip it, way down. Yes,

:06:03. > :06:08.it was another example of the English defence not racing up. You

:06:09. > :06:14.can see the English players conceding yards but it was Joseph,

:06:15. > :06:21.wasn't it? Big part of the game, if you do tackle high target the ball,

:06:22. > :06:30.tried to free it from the grass. You can see frustration on his face. It

:06:31. > :06:41.was a quick ball from there, on the front foot. Joseph is so elusive and

:06:42. > :06:46.sharp in attack, a good decision. A lot of these errors are symptomatic

:06:47. > :06:50.of the first game in the championship, aren't they? When you

:06:51. > :06:56.get to the third and fourth games, those moves on both sides will be

:06:57. > :07:00.much sharper. It is beautifully poised, and looking at the territory

:07:01. > :07:06.of possession it is far more even than it was. England have the ball

:07:07. > :07:24.here, but inside their own 22. Four minutes to go.

:07:25. > :07:34.It is a big squeeze coming from Scotland this time. Vunipola just

:07:35. > :07:42.grabbed and went. He could sense his scrum was in a bit of bother.

:07:43. > :07:52.Scotland have the penalty, they are right in front of the posts and the

:07:53. > :07:56.decision hanging on that ball. From that point, Vunipola retreating from

:07:57. > :08:15.the scrum did his job. Yes, he is doing well there.

:08:16. > :08:19.England's second two players from breakdown after Vunipola didn't do

:08:20. > :08:24.their job properly. That second player was actually George Ford,

:08:25. > :08:43.then Bartley came and drove them off it. -- Barkley. Laidlaw draws his

:08:44. > :08:47.side to within one point, as we near half-time here at Murrayfield.

:08:48. > :08:56.England are leading but that is the most slender of Leeds now. He has

:08:57. > :09:06.made eight yards, nine yards. George Ford isn't quick enough. Is there

:09:07. > :09:26.time for one more score for either side in this half? Laidlaw has a

:09:27. > :09:35.look and gives it to Barclay. Into the final two minutes in this first

:09:36. > :09:40.half. Vunipola waiting for this one, Seymour is there. The ball is

:09:41. > :09:46.bouncing around, the crowd are crying offside. Who did it come off?

:09:47. > :09:56.We have seen that passage of play before. All I would say is if I was

:09:57. > :10:08.him I wouldn't even take that risk, if I was Dan Cole. He just wanted to

:10:09. > :10:13.have a little chat, the referee. There is time, it has gone into the

:10:14. > :10:23.final minute. Russell will try to bite away in the England half. It is

:10:24. > :10:30.ambitious. It is a beautiful kick. A fantastic kick. Only six metres from

:10:31. > :10:39.touch. Scotland are taking their time. It is a big target. If you go

:10:40. > :10:44.in with the lead having been seven points down, this will be a huge

:10:45. > :10:52.fillip for them. The final passage of play may well be Scotland's. It

:10:53. > :11:03.goes to Richie Gray, and Scotland to change the angle of attack.

:11:04. > :11:15.It is Hardie looking for support now. Closer still, Laidlaw having a

:11:16. > :11:20.look. Scott is there, the ball is loose. Still with Scotland, the

:11:21. > :11:23.clock is red. The final act of this first half. In the shadow of the

:11:24. > :11:41.posts. Jonny Gray. Nel, told to get out by Laidlaw.

:11:42. > :11:48.Scotland trying to remain calm in these final metres. Wide it goes,

:11:49. > :12:03.Dickinson, big hit from Haskell. Not yet thinking of the drop goal,

:12:04. > :12:10.getting it forwards, to Richie Gray. He is there now. Drifting back for

:12:11. > :12:17.the drop goal, to Russell now. It is a wide one, an ugly one. One minute

:12:18. > :12:23.over the allotted 40 minutes, and a bit of a groan from most inside

:12:24. > :12:34.Murrayfield. That has been the one drive from George Kruis. Then this,

:12:35. > :12:40.look at it, he looks disgusted with it. I don't think either coach will

:12:41. > :12:46.be particularly happy, there is a lot of things they can improve on

:12:47. > :12:51.but no disaster for either side. I'm sure both coaches will say keep more

:12:52. > :13:01.of the ball and stop making errors. An enthralling second half in

:13:02. > :13:04.prospect. It is 6-7. It is certainly a compelling

:13:05. > :13:08.confrontation, everything we could have hoped for. England are

:13:09. > :13:21.certainly not in cruise control, and it is Kruis' try that keeps them in

:13:22. > :13:25.control. It has been a game that is switching all over the place with

:13:26. > :13:31.people losing control of the ball, it has actually only been nine and

:13:32. > :13:38.it is fairly even Stevens. In fact a lot of those statistics are 50/ 50.

:13:39. > :13:42.That is reflected in the score. Yes, England were the best in the first

:13:43. > :13:50.20, Scotland were the best in the second 20. It is a very even game,

:13:51. > :13:56.just as we thought we were going to get. From England's point of view,

:13:57. > :13:59.they will be gutted, eight penalties in the first half. As an

:14:00. > :14:04.international marker you try to keep it below ten in the game. There has

:14:05. > :14:10.been talk about discipline before, it is the stupid penalties they give

:14:11. > :14:16.away. I have been enthralled by what is going on, particularly the

:14:17. > :14:26.breakdown which nobody seems to be dominating in any way. You have

:14:27. > :14:34.Barclay and Hardie, racing like hairs. England had the best first 20

:14:35. > :14:41.minutes, then Scotland came back to make it equal. A lot of kicking.

:14:42. > :14:46.Yes, particularly from England. I don't like this in this position,

:14:47. > :14:57.Watson does so well to beat the players. He is in space, straighten

:14:58. > :15:01.up and let it go. That ball has got to stay in field. If you are going

:15:02. > :15:11.to hit that kick. This one on the other hand, he has kept it in the

:15:12. > :15:18.field of play and get what he wants out of it. He is a bit more of a

:15:19. > :15:22.footballer than Watson, but Watson is high on confidence, I just wish

:15:23. > :15:29.he would back himself with ball in hand. As a coach, I would want them

:15:30. > :15:35.to be going let's look at phases. He has just beaten two guys, he can

:15:36. > :15:41.either go to line himself or tried to get this ball to Jack and have a

:15:42. > :15:45.go down the edge. It is edgy, isn't it? A good kicking game can put you

:15:46. > :15:55.in a position which ultimately leads to a try and that's what happened

:15:56. > :15:57.for England. Yes, we have this edginess we were talking about

:15:58. > :16:02.between the two scrum-half spot. Yes, Greig Laidlaw gets sucked in

:16:03. > :16:08.with Danny Care. This is just the missed tackle, Richie Gray on his

:16:09. > :16:20.opposite number has got to make this tackle but he doesn't. Great power

:16:21. > :16:27.by Kruis. Danny Care comes back in, there is a little push. Greig

:16:28. > :16:34.Laidlaw gets himself into no man's land, and it allowed Vunipola to get

:16:35. > :16:40.the front foot, it may be allowed Kruis to get the front foot, and it

:16:41. > :16:44.was a missed tackle, simple as that. People are talking about blocking,

:16:45. > :16:51.but you can go round the inside or the outside and he has picked

:16:52. > :16:55.poorly. Greig Laidlaw was the reason he went round the wrong side, you

:16:56. > :17:01.went in to have that confrontation. At that stage of the game England

:17:02. > :17:05.did seem to be in control. Scotland were on the back foot, how did the

:17:06. > :17:11.game shift to give Scotland the impetus? Because they had some good

:17:12. > :17:21.scoring opportunities. They got the ball. It is. The line-out was pretty

:17:22. > :17:25.good, to be fair. John Hardie gets his way down the outside. Look how

:17:26. > :17:31.close he is to the try line, now it just needs to be recycled. Vunipola

:17:32. > :17:40.gets in a good position. By taking his hand off it, the ball skips out

:17:41. > :17:46.the side. You can argue both ways depending on what Kolarov sure you

:17:47. > :17:51.wear. He has got to let go now because he's not supporting his body

:17:52. > :17:56.weight. The hand comes off, and Jonny Gray probably helps the ball

:17:57. > :18:01.come out the side, it is just unlucky. Here is another opportunity

:18:02. > :18:07.as well, a great tackle by Joseph. Yes, you are hoping Farrell will

:18:08. > :18:14.make that chop tackle anyway, but he has his arm a good place. With the

:18:15. > :18:21.new laws, that ripping from Joseph is no longer seen as a knock-on. It

:18:22. > :18:26.is fashionable. Now it has just disappeared, it is one of those

:18:27. > :18:30.inconsistencies. Seymour was looking to off-load it and there were a lot

:18:31. > :18:35.of blue shirts coming through but by doing that he negated both things,

:18:36. > :18:41.it was very good defence by Joseph. At moment I took my headphones off

:18:42. > :18:45.and listen to the crowd. Any time Dylan Hartley is involved in

:18:46. > :18:50.anything there is a measure of booing, he is the pantomime villain.

:18:51. > :19:01.What Richie Gray and Dylan Hartley, nearest here of that ruck and he's

:19:02. > :19:05.saying sorry. He is literally whiter than white! He knows he has the

:19:06. > :19:10.spotlight on him, he is doing the right thing at the right time which

:19:11. > :19:16.is great. He has hit every line-out, he's been really good in that

:19:17. > :19:23.regard. It is so tight, what is the key area then needs to shift to

:19:24. > :19:27.determine the outcome? England were possibly over kicking, they need to

:19:28. > :19:31.reaffirm that and get back down in the right areas, then play their

:19:32. > :19:39.usual game. They are looking like they want to play that powerful

:19:40. > :19:42.game. Scotland have had England with a few problems. Hopefully the

:19:43. > :19:45.Scotland management will look at that and say we need to be

:19:46. > :19:55.exploiting England in the second half. It could be the inspiration or

:19:56. > :19:59.it could be a mistake, that's how tight it could be. Obviously this

:20:00. > :20:06.game is balanced on a knife edge and the game in Paris was as world

:20:07. > :20:19.today, it was three tries to two, and France sneaked it.

:20:20. > :20:35.COMMENTATOR: Great tackle. He has opened France's account in his first

:20:36. > :20:43.test. The first try. France have men on the floor and this could be set

:20:44. > :20:53.up for a very swift try... Try for Italy!

:20:54. > :21:16.Deliberate knock-on? It was. Taken quickly. And the try is scored. He

:21:17. > :21:25.goes for the line and he is so close. That is a great tackle! It is

:21:26. > :21:30.try for the man of the moment! Real chance now for France. Cracking up

:21:31. > :21:41.inside the 22. It is a try for the French winger.

:21:42. > :22:03.This was the key moment. Parisse was man of the match, and

:22:04. > :22:08.then he is penalised for playing the ball on the ground. You could argue

:22:09. > :22:13.it was a high tackle. What a kick from the halfway line to give France

:22:14. > :22:21.the lead. We have played many minutes of added time now, two and a

:22:22. > :22:27.bit, Parisse for glory with the drop goal. He would never be the villain

:22:28. > :22:31.of the piece, he had an amazing game but Italy will be kicking

:22:32. > :22:36.themselves. Their kicking game throughout was horrendous really,

:22:37. > :22:42.and France won with a very narrow margin so they are currently top of

:22:43. > :22:48.the table. Tomorrow it is Ireland versus Wales. It is also worth

:22:49. > :22:51.saying we have the return of Rugby Special on BBC Two at seven o'clock

:22:52. > :22:55.tomorrow night when you can see the best moments of the game. If you

:22:56. > :23:01.have ever wondered why Wales have been so hard to beat in recent

:23:02. > :23:12.years, you need look no further than their defence coach, Shaun Edwards.

:23:13. > :23:17.It is the Edwards stare, you don't want to get it as a player or an

:23:18. > :23:21.interviewer. After eight years with team Wales,

:23:22. > :23:26.Edwards remains an enigma. Terrifying to some but he does have

:23:27. > :23:29.a soft side. Being a code is a little bit like being a parent but

:23:30. > :23:35.sometimes you have got to give love and sometimes you have got to set

:23:36. > :23:39.rules, it is that simple. Sometimes coaches don't get close to the

:23:40. > :23:43.players and that's their prerogative, I'm not saying that's

:23:44. > :23:49.the wrong way round but I consider a lot of players as close friends. Is

:23:50. > :23:56.that a difficult line to struggle, as are made on one hand and

:23:57. > :24:04.someone's boss on the other? No. Easy? Yes because they know I am

:24:05. > :24:07.only trying to help them. I only ever give constructive criticism.

:24:08. > :24:11.From the outside looking in, I think a lot of people see you as this

:24:12. > :24:17.aggressive, hard-nosed taskmaster who doesn't take any messing. Is

:24:18. > :24:21.that too simplified view of Shaun Edwards? I'm not a great judge of

:24:22. > :24:29.myself so I will let other people answer that question for you. What

:24:30. > :24:34.I'm trying to get to is are there hidden depths we don't see? You are

:24:35. > :24:40.more likely to put an arm round player than maybe be someone who

:24:41. > :24:43.shouts and gets angry? I shout sometimes but the only time I would

:24:44. > :24:49.shout at a player as if I was really cheesed off with them and they

:24:50. > :24:53.didn't give 100%. If they give 100% and they are studious and they want

:24:54. > :24:58.to get better, I will put time into them and help them become better

:24:59. > :25:02.rugby players. Players have mentioned before things like the

:25:03. > :25:08.Shaun Edwards wall of shame where you will put their name on the board

:25:09. > :25:12.if they missed a tackle. Never if they missed a tackle. I would give

:25:13. > :25:17.quite stinging criticism if it was a repeat error coming up all the time

:25:18. > :25:21.in the game. At first I would try to help them but if it happens four

:25:22. > :25:33.times on the trot, they are not listening. Who are the favourites?

:25:34. > :25:38.England are the bookies' favourite, is that justified considering they

:25:39. > :25:47.have a new coach? I have no idea on that. Thanks, mate.

:25:48. > :25:51.Cheers. I have that as a score draw on my coupon, but only just. Ireland

:25:52. > :26:09.versus Wales tomorrow at 2:30pm. The red button forum follows this

:26:10. > :26:13.broadcast, so if you have any thoughts on this game at

:26:14. > :26:22.Murrayfield, which is balanced on a knife edge, give us a shout by all

:26:23. > :26:28.the usual means. England take the field then with the

:26:29. > :26:34.narrowest of Leeds by 7-6. Jeremy, your thoughts? Scotland for me, less

:26:35. > :26:39.is more. Territory is the winning currency at the moment and they need

:26:40. > :26:47.to play more in England's hard to do that. I agree with that, but have

:26:48. > :26:51.the belief. Try to be error free, no missed tackles, take the chances,

:26:52. > :26:55.get the breakdown competitive. The scrum has been really good, try to

:26:56. > :27:09.BA was accurate as they come in this half. They have got to play their

:27:10. > :27:13.territory. Yes, and roll reserves -- reversal for England, they have got

:27:14. > :27:17.to get back into their own half, play the rugby they want to play.

:27:18. > :27:24.Nobody has taken the game by the scruff of the neck. First raindrops

:27:25. > :27:30.starting to fall at Murrayfield, conditions may or may not come into

:27:31. > :27:34.play over the next 40 minutes, but on Saturday tea-time this is the

:27:35. > :27:45.most compelling of entertainment. Let's go back to Andrew Cotter.

:27:46. > :27:51.COMMENTATOR: No changes at half-time. It really is a

:27:52. > :27:56.beautifully poised game, and so much energy inside Murrayfield. Russell

:27:57. > :28:04.starts down the middle, and confusion there as Dylan Hartley

:28:05. > :28:09.instinctively took it. There is a gift at the start of the second half

:28:10. > :28:22.for Scotland. Out to Bennett, who hasn't seen too much of the ball.

:28:23. > :28:37.Loose ball. John Barclay. A little bit of neat interplay brings Richie

:28:38. > :28:49.Gray into it. Still with Scotland, into the 22 they come. Still with

:28:50. > :29:05.the Grays, and Jonny this time. Russell again. Still Scotland move

:29:06. > :29:19.through the phases, and England shuffle that defence from side to

:29:20. > :29:26.side. Laidlaw to Hogg. Then the spin from Seymour coming in, and Scotland

:29:27. > :29:32.getting closer now. With every inch and yard, the decibel level rises.

:29:33. > :29:44.Laidlaw feeds Russell, slammed back by Dan Cole and Kruis. And penalty

:29:45. > :29:48.at the end, phase after phase, and a shake of the head from Greig

:29:49. > :29:52.Laidlaw, billowing from the crowd, but well earned from the defence. We

:29:53. > :30:01.saw Dylan Hartley applaud his team-mates. It was after a terrible

:30:02. > :30:02.first attempt at the restart and restarts are very important in

:30:03. > :30:14.games. They kept the line well. They won

:30:15. > :30:21.the penalty. Matt Scott came off his feet. Not allowed a fair contest of

:30:22. > :30:26.the ball. Scotland getting three passes away, the England line speed

:30:27. > :30:31.is far slower. That must be deliberate. That was a good clearing

:30:32. > :30:42.kick from Farrell. Kruis slapped it back to Vunipola

:30:43. > :30:51.and it worked well in the end for England. Danny Care and the referee

:30:52. > :31:05.flapping their arms at each other. An injection of pace. And up to the

:31:06. > :31:20.heavens it goes. Hogg hat to check himself.

:31:21. > :31:30.Penalty to Scotland, so again from one side to the other, the

:31:31. > :31:41.infringements. Dan Cole is penalised. He is targeting a man

:31:42. > :31:50.here. See when it comes into the replay. Right-hand side. Not

:31:51. > :32:07.entirely sure what is wrong with that. Jonny Gray. He is still part

:32:08. > :32:19.of the ruck. That was frustrating for Dan Cole to give away. Dylan

:32:20. > :32:29.Hartley is having a chat. The conversation was short. Vunipola has

:32:30. > :32:37.been impressive in attack. He is retreating there. That could have

:32:38. > :32:45.been a breakdown several yards the other side of the England gain line.

:32:46. > :32:59.One of three vice captain as an aside, Vunipola. Bill Beaumont

:33:00. > :33:05.watching. Owen Farrell is another vice captain. This is the attacking

:33:06. > :33:17.position for Scotland again. Longer line-out. Miles not straight. Again

:33:18. > :33:19.to Jonny Gray. The offence not to be not straight, it is the knock-on.

:33:20. > :33:33.England have the scrum. That is a couple that have been

:33:34. > :33:52.squint from Ross Ford. When you look back and think, where

:33:53. > :34:00.should we have made ground, done things better? These are things that

:34:01. > :34:08.cost a lot. The scrums have been an even contest so far. England is not

:34:09. > :34:25.giving way. Vunipola again. The strength of the man. Just buying

:34:26. > :34:26.Care a little more space. Three tackles, still going, Stuart

:34:27. > :34:38.Hogg. Great ground made. The turnover is good and Dan Cole is

:34:39. > :34:47.in their for England. Plaintive cries from Maitland. Nobody back

:34:48. > :34:55.there. Hogg is getting across. Watson upon him. Hogg did well. No

:34:56. > :35:02.angle to play with. A fine clearing kick under pressure. He has been

:35:03. > :35:08.Scotland's standout back for a while and that shows you exactly why.

:35:09. > :35:12.Courtney Lawes is ambling on. Joe Launchbury is done for the day.

:35:13. > :35:26.Courtney Lawes has been struggling with a hamstring strain. Courtney

:35:27. > :35:39.Lawes has a huge amount of strapping on his leg. A fine clearing kick

:35:40. > :35:45.from Haag, but still in good's attacking position. If anything goes

:35:46. > :35:49.wrong with Lawes, you will have to reshuffle and probably put Haskell

:35:50. > :35:57.in the second row and Clifford in the back row. Haskell would probably

:35:58. > :36:13.relish that. They get the penalty and advantage. The maul breakdown.

:36:14. > :36:32.That was under the referee's knows. Good outcome for England. -- nose.

:36:33. > :36:39.That is where the pressure came on. During the World Cup, one weakness

:36:40. > :36:45.for Scotland was defending against a maul. It is very difficult to

:36:46. > :36:54.actually defend when the ball is sealed properly. Most of the work,

:36:55. > :37:01.before it has even got going. I'm kind and unnecessary brewing

:37:02. > :37:11.which is the way for opposing teams at Murrayfield -- Boeing.

:37:12. > :37:22.-- booing.. It was sweetly struck but it drifted wide. You were an

:37:23. > :37:29.extraordinary kicker, Chris. I am sure silence would be more

:37:30. > :37:39.unsettling than booing. . It does not bother you as a kicker. It's

:37:40. > :37:46.never bothered me. We saw Mako Vunipola coming on for Marler.

:37:47. > :37:47.Changes at loose-head for England. A missed opportunity there. Both sides

:37:48. > :38:22.have had a missed kick. Ford sending up to Tim Peake's

:38:23. > :38:26.territory. England with a real opportunity. A standstill from Dan

:38:27. > :38:55.Cole and Haskell in tandem. England making ground. Softening up

:38:56. > :39:01.the defence. Jack Nowell for the corner. What a try for England! Know

:39:02. > :39:02.all again. He scored last year in this fixture. England have a second

:39:03. > :39:24.try. It was coming. Wonderful from Mako Vunipola, the

:39:25. > :39:31.softest hands. Just drops it in. Back to Ford. Before that, his

:39:32. > :39:36.brother made four, five yards. He had a ten yard carry. That is what

:39:37. > :39:45.they are constantly looking for. Players able to do more than they

:39:46. > :39:49.currently. Two defenders. Turned inside. It was a good finish by

:39:50. > :40:02.Nowell. Singing Swing Low, Sweet Chariot

:40:03. > :40:26.again. Not to be. But Vunipola, at the

:40:27. > :40:33.heart of that, fresh on the field for a Jack Nowell's tribe. He has

:40:34. > :40:45.great handss stop moves to the inside. Makes Hardie come in. Drops

:40:46. > :40:52.the ball back out to delve. -- Nowell.

:40:53. > :40:57.A knock-on from Scottish handss gives England the ball, but they

:40:58. > :41:18.have it anyway. Nowell and Joseph quickly upon that

:41:19. > :41:37.but good work by Seymour, writing himself and laying it back.

:41:38. > :42:02.Jonny Gray hit hard by Vunipola and Haskell. Mako Vunipola steps in. A

:42:03. > :42:08.fair contest, says the referee. Ford comes in. Denton, no chance to build

:42:09. > :42:14.up a head of steam. This is hard work from Scotland for

:42:15. > :42:34.not too much yardage. Laidlaw, just a breather. And a

:42:35. > :42:41.pond. Banged up she goes. Brown coming forward and takes it down

:42:42. > :42:46.beautifully. Maitland trying to make sure he is seen to get out of the

:42:47. > :42:50.way. The penalty is given. Not rolling away, says the referee. You

:42:51. > :42:59.really have to make it obvious. Almost impossible. That was from

:43:00. > :43:02.English defensive pressure. Running out of options. Put the ball in the

:43:03. > :43:14.air and see what we do. Scotland have some fluency but in

:43:15. > :43:19.the end they did not have the power to get the ball back consistently

:43:20. > :43:28.quickly. Great from Mike Brown. Having to fight hard. He did make an

:43:29. > :43:34.effort that you have to make a clear effort.

:43:35. > :43:49.All the changes early are coming for England. Danny Care is off and Ben

:43:50. > :43:55.Youngs is on. Ben Youngs offers an attacking threat.

:43:56. > :44:04.Here comes the ball. Scotland struggling to defend. A little

:44:05. > :44:11.chance for Watson to create something. They have the penalty

:44:12. > :44:18.coming. Which they will get now. Two penalties coming from the maul. What

:44:19. > :44:24.you are seeing is the influence of Steve Borthwick. How long the tale

:44:25. > :44:27.was on the England driving maul, typical Saracens. People say it is

:44:28. > :44:42.illegal, it probably is, technically. I apologise.

:44:43. > :44:54.That was a big call. I think it was the right one from the England point

:44:55. > :44:58.of view. They are abandoning any thoughts of going for three points.

:44:59. > :45:04.They think they can drive their way over. It went to Billy Vunipola.

:45:05. > :45:20.Youngs gave it to Watson. Watson almost overran it.

:45:21. > :45:32.Did not work directly from the line-out.

:45:33. > :45:49.Carried in by Lawes. Within five metres.

:45:50. > :46:04.Scotland's defence being stretched out wide. The ball has slowed down.

:46:05. > :46:15.Mike Brown, almost straight through the middle. England looking to turn

:46:16. > :46:24.the screw. All the ball and all the territory. Youngs. Interception. The

:46:25. > :46:31.chase was on for the kick, but into touch. It looked as if Scotland

:46:32. > :46:39.might be away. If it had gone to a slightly quicker man the bustle. I

:46:40. > :46:45.do not think he Hogg was there. Perhaps an instinctive route from

:46:46. > :46:50.Finn Russell. Taking it from Joseph. Stuart Hogg was racing up on the

:46:51. > :47:01.outside. Ford reacted. Hogg on the outside. You would fancy Stuart Hogg

:47:02. > :47:05.in a foot race against most. He was so surprised to get it he did not

:47:06. > :47:09.look left because he did not consider anyone else would be there.

:47:10. > :47:15.Scotland making the changes with Gordon Reid coming on. Loose-head

:47:16. > :47:21.for Alasdair Dickinson. Finn Russell read that so well. He saw the ball

:47:22. > :47:28.the whole time. But he could not get to that man, Stuart Hogg. Blair

:47:29. > :47:35.Cowan is also getting ready to come on.

:47:36. > :47:48.Nowell and Brown are there. And Nowell takes it deep inside his own

:47:49. > :47:57.22. The clearing kick was quickly taken by Scotland. Jack Nowell. He

:47:58. > :47:58.times passes well, but this time the timing was good, the pass was a

:47:59. > :48:17.fraction forward. Blair Cowan. Coming on for John

:48:18. > :48:30.Barclay. Still a couple of opensides in the front row for Scotland. John

:48:31. > :48:33.Barclay has worked hard to disrupt the English ball, as will Blair

:48:34. > :48:48.Cowan. No doubt that England are, in the

:48:49. > :48:54.field of the game, in the ascendancy. Before kick-off we

:48:55. > :49:09.talked about the Hardie and Haskell battle but it has not turned out

:49:10. > :49:13.like that. Different front rows. Gordon Reid against Dan Cole, in

:49:14. > :49:26.scrummaging terms, a tough contest for Gordon Reid.

:49:27. > :49:37.Dan Cole was delighted that the ethos was going to be for England to

:49:38. > :49:42.get back to scrummaging power, which was not there in the World Cup. It

:49:43. > :49:43.has been a good battle today and not too many resets. It has been

:49:44. > :50:08.managed. Scotland, what do they need to do to

:50:09. > :50:12.pick this up? Stop the momentum of England. Since they got the second

:50:13. > :50:20.try they have controlled territory and momentum. You get the feeling

:50:21. > :50:24.Scotland are holding on. They need to shift the momentum, which could

:50:25. > :50:26.come from a good kick or chase or a big hit in defence. We take into the

:50:27. > :50:44.final quarter. The fresh shirt of Ben Youngs,

:50:45. > :50:51.getting ready to feed the scrum. The scrum has lost a bit of stability

:50:52. > :50:57.with the changes. Billy Vunipola rubbing his hands together. Even

:50:58. > :51:01.though it did not go anywhere, you can see that at least the ball is

:51:02. > :51:10.right back at the number eight's feet and there are options. It is

:51:11. > :51:16.not left in the middle. Billy Vunipola's stats are impressive.

:51:17. > :51:31.Breaking the gain line time after time.

:51:32. > :51:45.Some trouble on the far side for Scotland. England have the penalty.

:51:46. > :51:51.Income feedback slap is -- the back slap is.

:51:52. > :52:00.England were going forward. They had options and that is why it came. The

:52:01. > :52:05.problem is, whether it is the tight head sending in the loose-head, when

:52:06. > :52:09.you get Gordon Reid at that angle, it was the same with Marler in the

:52:10. > :52:17.World Cup, once he gets parallel to the goal-line, they only pin one

:52:18. > :52:23.player. Farrell has the distance for this. There is a little bit of

:52:24. > :52:30.breeze. The flags are not doing too much. This is a big kick for Owen

:52:31. > :52:32.Farrell. He has missed two admittedly wide out kicks. But you

:52:33. > :53:00.do not want to miss three in a row. He has made the adjustment. It was a

:53:01. > :53:06.beautiful strike. Owen Farrell. England are moving away from

:53:07. > :53:10.Scotland. It underlines his quality as a fantastic goal kicker under all

:53:11. > :53:17.sorts of pressure. Nice tempo and rhythm. Just a fraction to the

:53:18. > :53:23.right. You can see what Dylan Hartley thinks of that. He

:53:24. > :53:30.celebrates. Nowell has had a very good game.

:53:31. > :53:43.Hartley suggesting he was molested around the face.

:53:44. > :53:54.Youngs sends it high. And into touch. There is certainly plenty of

:53:55. > :53:59.believe around the England side, because this is a new regime. There

:54:00. > :54:03.would have been nervous coming into this, about how to play under the

:54:04. > :54:08.Eddie Jones system, but they seem to be growing in confidence. This is

:54:09. > :54:15.one reason he picked a team with experience, because they should know

:54:16. > :54:19.what to do in these situations. In the internationals when they have

:54:20. > :54:25.played well, away from home, they should know how to close this game

:54:26. > :54:29.out. Everything that should be done by Scotland now, they know how to

:54:30. > :54:40.counter. Scotland need to get ball and territory. They cannot secure

:54:41. > :54:47.the ball and Mako Vunipola got it. Just as Scotland thought they might

:54:48. > :54:48.have a fat form to try something. Seymour coming forward. Knock-on.

:54:49. > :55:04.England's ball. England have gone there two or three

:55:05. > :55:12.times in Scotland have struggled to deal with it under pressure. Seymour

:55:13. > :55:16.normally so good. These mistakes are not allowing Scotland to get

:55:17. > :55:27.possession or stop momentum. The line-out did not go well. McInally

:55:28. > :55:31.is on for Ross Ford. Scotland have only lost two line-outs and had one

:55:32. > :55:33.is stolen, but the crucial line-outs, when the tide is against

:55:34. > :55:47.you, you want to get. A reminder that tomorrow, Ireland

:55:48. > :55:57.against Wales at the Aviva Stadium is on five live sports extra. And

:55:58. > :56:05.Rugby Special returns. I do not know if we are doing the theme music. Is

:56:06. > :56:13.there an updated version? And on the red button, as well. The time this

:56:14. > :56:17.is taking is shifting momentum away from Scotland. England are managing

:56:18. > :56:27.this particularly well, setting the time of the scrum.

:56:28. > :56:34.A good look down from the overhead camera. Folding in on itself. The

:56:35. > :56:45.decision this time, penalty to Scotland.

:56:46. > :56:48.Mako Vunipola. That is certainly where it is pointed. We will see

:56:49. > :57:03.with the replay. Mako Vunipola, going down, towards

:57:04. > :57:15.the ground. They have to score next. It is as simple as that. Scotland.

:57:16. > :57:20.Scotland got a slight surge. Once you get going forward, the referee

:57:21. > :57:25.will assume, probably rightly, beside going down is to protect the

:57:26. > :57:32.drive, the ball. And a penalty is accordingly given. Duncan Taylor is

:57:33. > :57:37.coming on for Seymour. He has been flying for Saracens, Taylor. Made

:57:38. > :57:45.such strides in his game. Tommy Seymour is. Duncan Taylor is on on

:57:46. > :58:06.the wing. Good defensive work by England. The

:58:07. > :58:20.referee said it did not go forwards. Bouncing off Joseph. Laidlaw, a kick

:58:21. > :58:24.in the eye, inadvertently. Scrabbling around, trying to secure

:58:25. > :58:26.it and Matt Scott did that. But Scotland, when they have the ball,

:58:27. > :58:50.they are pinned backwards. Hogs, again. Not quite making his

:58:51. > :59:03.way past Courtney Lawes, and not many do. Deep it goes from Scotland.

:59:04. > :59:14.That sums up the Scotland attack. England took it quickly. Giving

:59:15. > :59:16.Scotland another chance. More space for Haag. He tried to skip his way

:59:17. > :59:40.through and lost it. A penalty. 19. Courtney Lawes. A penalty for

:59:41. > :59:50.Scotland. What do you do? Take the points? Yes. Take the opportunity of

:59:51. > :59:55.three points. If he kicks this, 15-9, there is not a lot in it. And

:59:56. > :00:01.the number of turnovers, the game is fractured. All it takes from

:00:02. > :00:10.Scotland is one of those breaks. So many turnovers. We have spoken about

:00:11. > :00:17.the pressure. Just after this kick, Jack Clifford is going to make his

:00:18. > :00:18.debut. Harlequins' back row. But this is a big kick for Greig

:00:19. > :00:38.Laidlaw. He has his fair share of booing as

:00:39. > :00:49.well. Scotland back within six points, back within a converted try.

:00:50. > :00:54.Nel is coming off for Scotland as well so a couple of changes. We

:00:55. > :00:59.always talk about receiving the kick-off after scoring points and

:01:00. > :01:05.this is really crucial for Scotland. But it only being a 6-point game,

:01:06. > :01:11.and you are at home with the pressure of England, it is really

:01:12. > :01:18.important to do the basics well. Scotland haven't scored a try

:01:19. > :01:32.against England at Murrayfield since 2007. There we are, the restart, and

:01:33. > :01:34.Hogg comes forward and takes it. There is some distance in that, but

:01:35. > :01:55.Ford takes it. Fagerson is on for his first cap,

:01:56. > :02:00.there he is. He is the youngest man to make the front row to play for

:02:01. > :02:09.Scotland in 60 years, so here's one for the future. That was madness on

:02:10. > :02:17.the kick there. I don't know why it is not a penalty. He actually got

:02:18. > :02:26.back in front, didn't he, so it is OK. It was a big kick for George

:02:27. > :02:31.Ford, and he has a slight tendency to run. He resisted the temptation

:02:32. > :02:39.and they have got the reward. They are sneaking on the replacements

:02:40. > :02:47.now, Swinson is on. Ten minutes to go, six points in it but England are

:02:48. > :03:05.in a very strong position. Haskell has moved over. Vunipola gives it

:03:06. > :03:10.onto Youngs. Laidlaw getting up quickly but Watson secures things

:03:11. > :03:19.again for England. This is fierce defence from Scotland. England being

:03:20. > :03:30.punched back now. Mako Vunipola. Dylan Hartley trying to get in there

:03:31. > :03:40.but punched away. Kruis, with the very early try. And Youngs. It is a

:03:41. > :03:49.well-placed kick, but Hogg have just enough time to call the mark. With

:03:50. > :03:59.an enormous boot stones -- sends it into the east stand. Good catch! It

:04:00. > :04:10.was a good catch but the kick was probably a little bit too long.

:04:11. > :04:15.Hogg, that's the man Scotland want to get the ball to when you are six

:04:16. > :04:22.points adrift with nine minutes to go.

:04:23. > :04:32.There is preferred, and England have the advantage. Youngs gives it on to

:04:33. > :04:36.Ford. Watson waiting out there, advantage over says the referee.

:04:37. > :04:51.Good strength from the winger. Eight minutes remaining. And England come

:04:52. > :04:53.again. Mako Vunipola. The tackling, as it has to be from Scotland, is

:04:54. > :05:19.fierce. Youngs gives it on to Nowell. The crowd do not

:05:20. > :05:38.appreciate it and Farrell apologises to Murrayfield as a whole.

:05:39. > :06:01.I think Greig Laidlaw for a minute thought it was going to be in

:06:02. > :06:07.England line-out. It is a Scotland penalty. Let's have another look at

:06:08. > :06:18.that, if we can get a chance. Russell first of all to try to get

:06:19. > :06:22.Scotland out of the danger zone. You can see the ball here. He didn't

:06:23. > :06:34.have to move out of the way, no reason for him to move. What are

:06:35. > :06:39.your thoughts, Brian? I suppose it depends if the ball has crossed the

:06:40. > :06:41.player or the line. I don't think there is a huge amount in its, to be

:06:42. > :07:11.honest. Scott, almost through. Making a

:07:12. > :07:23.little bit of ground here, Scotland. Denton again. Tries to slap aside

:07:24. > :07:31.Kruis. Russell, inside his own 22 and Mike Brown waits. Watson

:07:32. > :07:39.watching, and he sliced it badly. Is this an opening of the door for

:07:40. > :07:45.Scotland in the final minutes? It will be deep, but they have got to

:07:46. > :07:50.have patience. There's five or six minutes left. Quality ball, keep it.

:07:51. > :08:02.They haven't had enough territory, they haven't had enough ball. The

:08:03. > :08:10.crowd are certainly behind them, and Humphreys, the coach, with his head

:08:11. > :08:32.in his hands. Slapped back by Richie Gray. Denton damages the line again.

:08:33. > :08:38.Taylor, just inside that England half. A rare adventure in this half

:08:39. > :08:47.for Scotland to find themselves this far up the pitch. Fagerson Full is

:08:48. > :09:02.to Gordon Reid, hit back hard by Hartley. Russell did well to keep

:09:03. > :09:06.the ball just about in his clutches. Just over four minutes remaining

:09:07. > :09:10.here at Murrayfield, six points in it. Scotland with no way through

:09:11. > :09:18.that white line of defence at the moment. Scott, just skirted around

:09:19. > :09:25.Dylan Hartley, and does well again. Russell gives it to Denton,

:09:26. > :09:31.straightens up, and Russell still lost, England's scrum to come and

:09:32. > :09:38.time is running out for Scotland. We said at half-time it is the

:09:39. > :09:47.mistakes, the turnovers that have hammered Scotland's attack hopes

:09:48. > :09:52.today. Scotland were beginning to build momentum and pressure. The

:09:53. > :10:01.line speed has improved with Courtney laws coming on. Just a word

:10:02. > :10:11.on the hooker, Dylan Hartley today? I think he has done well. Jamie

:10:12. > :10:19.George will not weaken the scrum. He has done what has been asked by

:10:20. > :10:26.Eddie Jones. Eddie Jones chose Dylan Hartley and he has played well. It

:10:27. > :10:31.almost looks like a sigh of relief from Dylan Hartley, he has got the

:10:32. > :10:40.first one out of the way as the captain. He has performed well.

:10:41. > :10:44.Farrell has taken on the captaincy duties, one of three vice captains

:10:45. > :10:51.in the England squad. Just about three minutes to go. Scotland are

:10:52. > :10:59.only one converted try away from a win. A penalty is coming from

:11:00. > :11:08.England, no doubt about it. The scrum has gone for Scotland, and in

:11:09. > :11:23.comes everybody again. Here's my -- he is a mightily impressive player,

:11:24. > :11:34.Jamie George, as well. The scrum dynamics have certainly changed.

:11:35. > :11:41.England's penalty, and the clock is now very much England's friend. And

:11:42. > :11:45.in no hurry of course to come to the line-out, as is their right.

:11:46. > :11:54.Wandering forward to the sound of the chariots swinging low. Final

:11:55. > :12:11.couple of minutes, and Scotland try to get in there. Courtney Lawes,

:12:12. > :12:17.securing it for England. Scotland needs something magical, England

:12:18. > :12:22.just need to see this out, but looking for another try. Vunipola,

:12:23. > :12:35.what a strength he has been, and his brother, bracing the ball. And

:12:36. > :12:42.Haskell again. England just have to control this here, beware of

:12:43. > :12:55.anything silly. Scotland eager for anything, some sort of interception,

:12:56. > :13:07.but Billy Vunipola again. McInally hanging onto him. England growing

:13:08. > :13:13.with every second that passes. Brown comes in to play scrum-half and

:13:14. > :13:22.Vunipola is there again. Mako Vunipola this time, and now they can

:13:23. > :13:26.see out the clock. Courtney Lawes. It is a suffocating, dominating

:13:27. > :13:32.performance from England in the final five minutes here. Good hands,

:13:33. > :13:46.good continuity. No mistakes through ten, 11 phases. Seconds remaining.

:13:47. > :13:54.Is there time for a scrum? It is England's scrum. Let's quickly talk

:13:55. > :13:58.about the man of the match, Brian? It is quite obvious, there he is, he

:13:59. > :14:03.has been an outstanding figure today. Not just in attack as well,

:14:04. > :14:08.he has defended well but his carries at times have been phenomenal. Head

:14:09. > :14:14.and shoulders, I would say, head and shoulders the best player on the

:14:15. > :14:28.field. So the RBS man of the match is this man, Billy Vunipola. What a

:14:29. > :14:39.power he has been. Some fans heading for the exit, and a cruel sound for

:14:40. > :14:45.Scottish fans inside Murrayfield, again only English fans singing. And

:14:46. > :14:51.the captain waits for his first victory in the Six Nations. England

:14:52. > :14:56.still have it, out it will go. England have won, they have scored

:14:57. > :15:03.the tries, they have won the Calcutta Cup once again. Victory for

:15:04. > :15:08.Eddie Jones' England, and his start as the code to claim one of the

:15:09. > :15:14.oldest and finest trophies in sport is no mean feat. He was pragmatic,

:15:15. > :15:17.he picked a team to do the job, they came and did it. They don't need to

:15:18. > :15:22.do anything else, they need to develop in future but this is what

:15:23. > :15:31.they needed to do. Simple as that really. England came and played the

:15:32. > :15:36.right game. From Scotland's point of view, huge defensive effort but it

:15:37. > :15:42.didn't allow them to get the continuity of the game. England go

:15:43. > :15:47.away with the Calcutta Cup. From a coach in Japan to being a coach for

:15:48. > :15:53.England now. All other celebrations for England, it opens up for them

:15:54. > :15:59.now, they go on to play Italy. For Scotland it doesn't get any easier,

:16:00. > :16:03.they go on to play Wales in Cardiff. Small consolations for the

:16:04. > :16:09.supporters. It finishes here at Murrayfield, victory again for

:16:10. > :16:17.England in the Calcutta Cup, 9-15. And a very similar game to Stuart

:16:18. > :16:24.Lancaster's first game in charge four years ago. And it is 504

:16:25. > :16:29.minutes since Scotland scored a try against England here at Murrayfield.

:16:30. > :16:35.Dylan Hartley vindicated as England captain today, he had a good game.

:16:36. > :16:39.This man had an even better one. Willie, post-World Cup how much did

:16:40. > :16:45.you want to reassert yourselves and eraser memories of the past with a

:16:46. > :16:48.win? Massively. It was tough to start off with but we have the same

:16:49. > :16:53.experience last year and hopefully we can carry this on through the

:16:54. > :16:58.tournament. Eddie Jones has set great store by getting the scrum

:16:59. > :17:02.right, how much did you want to assert yourselves up front?

:17:03. > :17:06.Massively, that was one of the biggest challenges, proving the

:17:07. > :17:12.critics wrong. The World Cup has gone now, we drew a line under it

:17:13. > :17:18.and we are just having fun. What impact has Eddie Jones had that we

:17:19. > :17:23.might have seen today? He is a great guy, I say this with only two weeks

:17:24. > :17:28.in but I hope we stay on the good side of him because he's very funny

:17:29. > :17:33.and personable, I really like him. We have Dylan Hartley to your left,

:17:34. > :17:40.captain today of course. A winning start, how much does that mean to

:17:41. > :17:47.you? Amazing, good start. It wasn't the prettiest but it was physical

:17:48. > :17:50.and the result mattered. It was chaotic, helter-skelter at times,

:17:51. > :17:56.why do you think England couldn't quite get control on the game?

:17:57. > :18:03.That's exactly it, we do something good but our discipline cost us.

:18:04. > :18:08.Fair play to the guys, they stuck to it. It was physical, there's a few

:18:09. > :18:14.sore bodies there today but we are happy to get the results. We will

:18:15. > :18:19.enjoy tonight and focus on next week come Monday. The win gives England

:18:20. > :18:25.chance to build momentum in the Six Nations tournament, how much more is

:18:26. > :18:28.there to come from this team? We have had two weeks together, I'm

:18:29. > :18:33.just pleased we got the victory. There is so much to work on come

:18:34. > :18:43.Monday. There is loads to work on and we will look forward to Italy.

:18:44. > :18:48.How proud moment was it lead England out? Huge. I am chuffed to be here

:18:49. > :18:59.with the guys and part of such a good team. Well done. Thank you.

:19:00. > :19:12.Greig, you couldn't separate these teams at half-time, why do you think

:19:13. > :19:15.England fell short? Looking at the second half there was probably

:19:16. > :19:21.momentum shifts when we coughed up eyeballs, that was a poor area for

:19:22. > :19:25.us and we lost about three line-out. In the first half we were causing

:19:26. > :19:30.England problems and we were right in the game. It is disappointing

:19:31. > :19:34.because we have been working on concentration. We certainly made it

:19:35. > :19:38.easier for England in the second half. What is it about England at

:19:39. > :19:51.Murrayfield that you don't seem to be able to score tries against them?

:19:52. > :19:55.That is a tough question to answer. We would score at the phase and then

:19:56. > :20:05.cough it up, it is a really simple game at times.

:20:06. > :20:14.Hard lines. Two games through the way of this Six Nations

:20:15. > :20:20.championship. France beat Italy 23-21 earlier. Wherever you are

:20:21. > :20:28.watching, I hope you enjoyed that match. A long way away, that man

:20:29. > :20:34.will have enjoyed it, I'm sure. A long way away in space, Tim Peake in

:20:35. > :20:38.his England shirt. Andy, you have been very frustrated. Sitting next

:20:39. > :20:44.to you at many matches at Murrayfield over many years. And as

:20:45. > :20:53.we see Dylan Hartley about to receive the Calcutta Cup made out of

:20:54. > :21:01.Indian rupees, a century and more ago. The Princess Royal there.

:21:02. > :21:05.Taking it in good heart but frustration from her part as well.

:21:06. > :21:12.With every year that goes by, Andy, I can feel the fire burning within.

:21:13. > :21:22.Opportunity knocks and goes away again. There's no place I would

:21:23. > :21:28.rather be than here, but now I wish I was with Tim Peake in space! There

:21:29. > :21:33.was not much between these two sides here today, we know that, but that

:21:34. > :21:38.was an opportunity yet again that Scotland haven't been able to

:21:39. > :21:42.convert to victory. There was a lot between these two teams. The

:21:43. > :21:48.scoreline reflects that it was close, but in terms of shape of play

:21:49. > :21:54.and strategy, England had it all. When Scotland got into a position,

:21:55. > :22:00.which was rare, to get a try or a penalty, they lost their shape and

:22:01. > :22:04.didn't really apply themselves well enough. That sums it up, when you

:22:05. > :22:08.look at the penalty counts, how this swing from Scotland not keeping

:22:09. > :22:13.their composure, suddenly they have gone from 8-3 down to all square on

:22:14. > :22:18.the penalty count. It shows they were chasing the game a little bit.

:22:19. > :22:22.And here is the man of the moment with Sonia.

:22:23. > :22:28.What about the performance? It was always going to be a difficult game,

:22:29. > :22:32.we knew we had two weeks together, a new team doing new things but I was

:22:33. > :22:37.really pleased with the application in the second half. There were some

:22:38. > :22:42.really good individual performances. It was often chaotic, do have any

:22:43. > :22:51.concerns about George Ford's control? At all. First half we

:22:52. > :22:54.couldn't get any scrum balls but I thought George did quite well. You

:22:55. > :22:59.have been evangelical about wanting to get the set piece right, do you

:23:00. > :23:05.think you got that today? Definitely, it's won us the game in

:23:06. > :23:12.the end. Our scrum really came to life. Dan Cole showed why he is the

:23:13. > :23:19.best tight-head prop in the world. Billy will be on the team sheet next

:23:20. > :23:25.week? He is pretty handy, isn't he? Good curries, good defence, I also

:23:26. > :23:32.thought Haskell was good. Dylan Hartley, what did you make of his

:23:33. > :23:35.first opportunity to lead England? I think he did well. We got penalised

:23:36. > :23:39.six times when we have the ball in possession which is extraordinarily

:23:40. > :23:45.high so it was a difficult game for him as captain, he did really well.

:23:46. > :23:51.You looked really calm watching on, but what was the reality in there

:23:52. > :23:55.knowing you wanted to get off to a winning start? In all honesty I

:23:56. > :23:59.always thought we were going to win the game, the only way we wouldn't

:24:00. > :24:04.win the game is if we did something silly. We wanted to move the ball

:24:05. > :24:10.more, we have been practising that. We weren't able to do that and we

:24:11. > :24:14.just had to play a different way and that is pragmatic football.

:24:15. > :24:21.Well done. He looked very stern on the way here but he has that big

:24:22. > :24:25.Eddie Jones smile on the way out. He makes a point, we wanted to play a

:24:26. > :24:30.more up-tempo game. That team performance today was more about

:24:31. > :24:34.power than subtlety, and it was about position rather than

:24:35. > :24:40.possession and that is where they beat Scotland today. It was very

:24:41. > :24:45.dog-eared, they were clinical. Basically they had two opportunities

:24:46. > :24:51.and scored two tries. If you turn the clock back a decade to the

:24:52. > :24:56.genesis of the England World Cup winning team, you were pragmatic. Of

:24:57. > :25:00.course, you have got to find that balance. You create a structure that

:25:01. > :25:04.keeps you protected but at the same time you have got to have the

:25:05. > :25:08.ability to bring your game to the opposition half. I still think

:25:09. > :25:13.England will go away, and watching the game do I really know what their

:25:14. > :25:27.shape is and what they are trying to do? Probably not. It looked like

:25:28. > :25:33.today they came in and won and did it the right way. Whatever the

:25:34. > :25:40.colour of your shirts, text us, tweet us. We have a read button

:25:41. > :25:44.forum coming up. If we talk about the opportunities that Scotland had,

:25:45. > :25:48.certainly at the start of the second half, you felt the momentum was with

:25:49. > :25:54.them but they weren't able to convert what they had. Why? It was

:25:55. > :25:58.good defence but when the opportunity is there, it is

:25:59. > :26:09.identifying, scanning. Russell never quite got free. You have identified

:26:10. > :26:14.this here. Four on three, you identify one defender and pick them

:26:15. > :26:19.off and go. It was no heads up rugby, they need to be smarter and

:26:20. > :26:25.show more composure in those situations. I think Russell

:26:26. > :26:33.struggled, he was complete -- completely stood on his own. It is

:26:34. > :26:39.difficult if you have no one supporting you. It should be like

:26:40. > :26:43.clockwork, the Scottish backline. This might be irrelevant but I don't

:26:44. > :26:47.know if you noticed on the clip, when the presentation was taking

:26:48. > :26:51.place Russell had all sorts of instructions written on his hand.

:26:52. > :26:59.Which can't have been when I get the ball, throw left, so what was that

:27:00. > :27:04.about? It will be trigger words to focus his mind. He has a good mental

:27:05. > :27:11.in Gregor Townsend and it will be things they worked on. It won't tell

:27:12. > :27:17.him to kick or pass, you won't find anything out of the game plan for

:27:18. > :27:26.it. It is the Super Bowl tomorrow, he has his players on it, he has

:27:27. > :27:32.been watching too much Super Bowl. This was a very comprehensively

:27:33. > :27:36.worked out move by England. This is the advantage of having two

:27:37. > :27:50.playmakers in your backline of Ford and Farrell. Fantastic sleight of

:27:51. > :27:56.hand. Seymour was in no man's land. This was incredibly well worked. I

:27:57. > :28:01.think Seymour comes in, he doesn't think it is going to be the

:28:02. > :28:06.wraparound. As soon as you come in defensively you will be done with

:28:07. > :28:14.this pace outside. If you put yourself in Seymour's shoes, he

:28:15. > :28:19.should know he will have cover from Russell on the inside. It is another

:28:20. > :28:24.disconnect. Not only are they disconnected in attack but also in

:28:25. > :28:32.defence. That's in the backline, so I'm surprised considering they play

:28:33. > :28:36.for the same district. There is a happy coach here tonight but rather

:28:37. > :28:40.disappointed New Zealand one. Can you describe the mood in the

:28:41. > :28:46.dressing room you have just walked out of? It is pretty easy to

:28:47. > :28:52.describe, very disappointed players. Why do you think Scotland ultimately

:28:53. > :28:59.fell short? If we had got the drop over and gone ahead... I thought we

:29:00. > :29:03.created opportunities, we didn't finish them off, and we weren't

:29:04. > :29:09.accurate enough. There's a lot more to come from the team I think. They

:29:10. > :29:16.are disappointed with the way they let those opportunities pass. It

:29:17. > :29:21.will be quickly identified and put the frustration behind us. We can

:29:22. > :29:28.look towards the next one. When Scotland suffered disappointment,

:29:29. > :29:34.what do you say to the team to keep the belief there? We can do better

:29:35. > :29:38.than that and we know we can. We cut down a few basic errors, became more

:29:39. > :29:45.accurate, we started believing again. That game was there to be

:29:46. > :30:00.won. That is the hard, cold facts of the situation. Those will be the

:30:01. > :30:03.basics of moving forward. Thank you. We have talked about this once

:30:04. > :30:08.already, it is going back to a similar point. There were other

:30:09. > :30:11.opportunities Scotland hard to get into scoring positions but it comes

:30:12. > :30:18.down to making the right call at the right time.

:30:19. > :30:26.The problem was not being in a position to penetrate. We call it

:30:27. > :30:31.coach killer if you run into touch. You have to either be able to step

:30:32. > :30:38.on the inside and go through... Then we carry on again and it is the same

:30:39. > :30:44.thing. They have had the ball, probably 15 phases in possession.

:30:45. > :30:48.Look at the stats, getting over the gain line. Sometimes you have to

:30:49. > :30:52.recycle and move on. It is disappointing. Scotland's only

:30:53. > :30:59.attacking threat was Stuart Hogg and he had a good game. But if your

:31:00. > :31:04.threat is at 15, that is easy to defend. Mark Bennett had a quiet

:31:05. > :31:10.game, may be feeling his way back. Finn Russell needs to regroup. He

:31:11. > :31:15.will. He has a good temperament. What was going through their minds

:31:16. > :31:25.making those decisions? I would suggest nothing. Jack Clifford came

:31:26. > :31:31.on for the last 15 minutes. He may be one of the stellar figures for

:31:32. > :31:36.the next World Cup cycle. Possibly the next game they will want to

:31:37. > :31:39.introduce him. The addition of an experienced player will not lose

:31:40. > :31:45.them any shape. We have more rugby to come over the next 24 hours on

:31:46. > :31:49.BBC television and also looking ahead to next weekend. The red

:31:50. > :31:54.button forum is coming up to talk about what we have seen today and

:31:55. > :32:00.what is coming tomorrow, Ireland against Wales. Highlights on rugby

:32:01. > :32:03.special, which is back by popular demand, 7pm tomorrow on BBC Two. And

:32:04. > :32:23.these Super League show on Monday. Next weekend we will have Wales

:32:24. > :32:28.against Scotland. When Eddie looks at the video, what will he give them

:32:29. > :32:33.out of ten? Seven. They came for a win and got it. I think you are

:32:34. > :32:44.right. Seven. They did not impose their shape. A solid seven. And the

:32:45. > :32:45.weight goes on for a Scottish try against England at Murrayfield. Good

:32:46. > :32:49.night.
