0:00:51 > 0:00:56Murrayfield, scene of autumnal triumphs, cast today at a theatre of
0:00:56 > 0:01:03redemption for a Scotland team dismembered last week. Take heart
0:01:03 > 0:01:09with these words, victory is always possible for the person who refuses
0:01:09 > 0:01:16to stop fighting.
0:01:16 > 0:01:18to stop fighting.Scotland is far more optimistic than I have seen
0:01:18 > 0:01:23them for a long time. The players are full of confidence, there is an
0:01:23 > 0:01:29expectation.The players they have got and the form they are in...We
0:01:29 > 0:01:35cannot wait to put what we have done in training onto the field. The six
0:01:35 > 0:01:45Nations once again. And it is a try for Wales. What a start for the home
0:01:45 > 0:01:54side.Who will believe what they are doing is the right thing? Is there a
0:01:54 > 0:02:00way back for Scotland?Penalty to Wales. Half-time seems a long time
0:02:00 > 0:02:08ago. They did not have any variety, they did not have a plan B.Wales
0:02:08 > 0:02:12are going towards victory here. You cannot lose the physical battles
0:02:12 > 0:02:18like they did today all over the field. The free scoring Scots have
0:02:18 > 0:02:25been neutered. That is trying number four.We did not play the way we are
0:02:25 > 0:02:32capable of.Scotland can take one small thing from this match. It was
0:02:32 > 0:02:38a sobering experience.I said to the players I think we will better them.
0:02:38 > 0:02:42They were complacent in their own defeat. We did Pooley and we are
0:02:42 > 0:02:48working out why that was the case.A week is a long time in rugby, before
0:02:48 > 0:02:52the opening match is both the side harboured ambitions of being
0:02:52 > 0:02:56championship contenders and now it is about making the most of what is
0:02:56 > 0:03:00left, putting together a winning run and hoping England and Ireland
0:03:00 > 0:03:04falter. And for Scotland it is about telling the sporting public that the
0:03:04 > 0:03:11nation does not go away. That live shot will do wonders for the
0:03:11 > 0:03:16Scottish tourist board. Edinburgh is sparkling on a golden but freezing
0:03:16 > 0:03:22Sunday afternoon. As the camera keeps panning from right-to-left
0:03:22 > 0:03:27from the castle all the way across this magnificent city we find
0:03:27 > 0:03:32ourselves there, at Murrayfield where, on a day like today, this is
0:03:32 > 0:03:36the most magnificent stadium. Keeping the faith for Scotland is
0:03:36 > 0:03:42Andy Nichol. Olivier Marteel EA is here with us, one of the great
0:03:42 > 0:03:49French players of all time. Andy, Scotland, over the last week or so,
0:03:49 > 0:03:54what is the general consensus?A huge disappointment in the
0:03:54 > 0:03:58performance and everybody wants to see this team come out here today
0:03:58 > 0:04:01and play with the aggression and physicality and tactical awareness
0:04:01 > 0:04:05they did not show last week and show everyone this is a good team that
0:04:05 > 0:04:12had a bad day last week. From a French perspective, OK they lost to
0:04:12 > 0:04:15Ireland in dramatic circumstances, but were the French public
0:04:15 > 0:04:19encouraged by the French performance?Yes, they were happy
0:04:19 > 0:04:24about the attitude of the team. Of course we were disappointed to lose
0:04:24 > 0:04:29in the last minute against Ireland, but Ireland deserved to win. They
0:04:29 > 0:04:35have started to build a new spirit and a new attitude, built by Jacques
0:04:35 > 0:04:40Brunel, and they will show it as we can.It is the first time you have
0:04:40 > 0:04:45been here as a spectator, what are your impressions of this?I imagine
0:04:45 > 0:04:50if you are Scot playing here, and it would be fantastic. If this was
0:04:50 > 0:04:54taking place one week after they played Australia, everybody would be
0:04:54 > 0:04:58looking forward to it and thinking Scotland were going to win. Scotland
0:04:58 > 0:05:02are still a good team. Just because they had a bad state last week does
0:05:02 > 0:05:08not mean that they will play badly this weekend. Rarely do they play
0:05:08 > 0:05:14badly twice in a row. I expect them to come back this weekend. There
0:05:14 > 0:05:17were two games yesterday. In one match it was raining tries and in
0:05:17 > 0:05:22the other match it was just raining. There was a TMO decision that will
0:05:22 > 0:05:29be talked about for years to come.
0:05:29 > 0:05:38And it is Henshaw again. Can anyone get him? Henshaw on the line. He
0:05:38 > 0:05:44felt something. Has he done something to his arm? A penalty to
0:05:44 > 0:05:52Italy, quickly taken. The pass was given away and it is a race. Can he
0:05:52 > 0:06:05go himself? He will score again.
0:06:05 > 0:06:11Anthony Watson followed up well. Owen Farrell puts boot to it and
0:06:11 > 0:06:18Johnny May is going to the race.
0:06:20 > 0:06:24Johnny May is going to the race. Try awarded, Johnny May of Leicester.
0:06:24 > 0:06:34That was just after two and a half minutes. It has gone along. An
0:06:34 > 0:06:41inside pass and a second try for Johnny May.
0:06:46 > 0:06:53He knows there is an advantage.
0:06:53 > 0:07:01REFEREE: We want to know if it is a tried, yes or no?
0:07:01 > 0:07:05tried, yes or no?What does this come off? It looks like it was off
0:07:05 > 0:07:18his knees so far. The ball is in goal. Who gets to it first?
0:07:18 > 0:07:23goal. Who gets to it first? He could have beaten Anthony Watson to it.
0:07:23 > 0:07:28REFEREE: The ball has come off any of the Welsh player but it has not
0:07:28 > 0:07:36been clearly grounded. Therefore it is a scrum five metres back.So no
0:07:36 > 0:07:45try?I can't hear you clearly.No try. I go back to the penalty?
0:07:45 > 0:07:53Correct. I still cannot understand why that is not a try. I think in
0:07:53 > 0:07:58the wording there was something about not being clear on the ground.
0:07:58 > 0:08:03You can see he has got his hand on the ball and he gets there first and
0:08:03 > 0:08:09grounds it. It is a big moment in the game, particularly in front of
0:08:09 > 0:08:1282,002 get the decision wrong. We will be looking for clarification
0:08:12 > 0:08:18afterwards.It was a tough game, full credit to Wales, they played
0:08:18 > 0:08:21really well. I am sure they will claim they were unlucky and maybe
0:08:21 > 0:08:27they were, but there is a team up there who makes the decisions. Was
0:08:27 > 0:08:34it a try or no try?I do not make the decisions. The TMO made that. It
0:08:34 > 0:08:39was down to pressure. How big a turning point do you think it was?
0:08:39 > 0:08:45We do not know. It was not a try, so why speculate? The momentum seem to
0:08:45 > 0:08:49be with Wales at that moment in time and it could have been a very
0:08:49 > 0:08:56different score. You guys know more than us. I would not suggest that,
0:08:56 > 0:09:01but tight games can turn on these margins, can't they?We have a team
0:09:01 > 0:09:05up there to make those decisions. He has got all the time in the world to
0:09:05 > 0:09:13make the decision and he makes it. An impasse between Sonia McLauchlan
0:09:13 > 0:09:17and Eddie Jones. This is how the table looks at the end of the second
0:09:17 > 0:09:23weekend. England and Ireland have two victories. We are having
0:09:23 > 0:09:29difficulty getting hold of a graphic.
0:09:29 > 0:09:33Tried or no try? It was a try and I think he got it wrong. We have seen
0:09:33 > 0:09:39the evidence that he got there first. It was a huge core and the
0:09:39 > 0:09:43TMO was brought in to get those decisions right and that is what was
0:09:43 > 0:09:49disappointing.Sam?I feel for the Welsh boys, I completely agree with
0:09:49 > 0:09:56Warren Gatland.Livio?
0:09:57 > 0:10:02Warren Gatland.Livio?It was a difficult decision, but they
0:10:02 > 0:10:08deserved to win as well, the Welsh. You think by and large England were
0:10:08 > 0:10:14the better side? They showed a bit more firepower in the first half and
0:10:14 > 0:10:18Wales came back in the second-half. Had Wales got that tried, they still
0:10:18 > 0:10:25would have been trailing. Be brutally honest perhaps they just
0:10:25 > 0:10:29edged Wales in that game. What about the opportunities got Williams had
0:10:29 > 0:10:36to score?I recognised him coming through a few years ago. The amount
0:10:36 > 0:10:42of ground he covers. He is on the right-hand side the screen. He has
0:10:42 > 0:10:47an incredible workrate.
0:10:47 > 0:10:51an incredible workrate. Because he was in the second half, it was more
0:10:51 > 0:10:57significant perhaps than in the first-half.It was wet with the
0:10:57 > 0:11:03rain, so he almost went to low and Sam Underhill did that as well. That
0:11:03 > 0:11:07was a huge part of the game as well because there was real momentum
0:11:07 > 0:11:13there. I thought Wales with Gareth Anscombe at ten brought their
0:11:13 > 0:11:16attacking game and they were finishing stronger. Probably England
0:11:16 > 0:11:23deserved it.When you score a match when there is 30 points between the
0:11:23 > 0:11:27sides, you are never sure if one team played well or one team played
0:11:27 > 0:11:32badly. Let's get a view on this Paul O'Connell.
0:11:32 > 0:11:36He is with Lee McKenzie. It was interesting because it was against
0:11:36 > 0:11:40Italy but it was a commanding performance by Ireland. What pleased
0:11:40 > 0:11:46you most about that?It was a very clinical performance. Ireland were
0:11:46 > 0:11:50really organised and they opened them up with some very clever
0:11:50 > 0:11:56playing and classic Jo Smith plays. Then there was creativity as well.
0:11:56 > 0:12:01The turnover ball and some fantastic tries. They conceded 19 points which
0:12:01 > 0:12:07they will be disappointed with, but Italy has very good players as well.
0:12:07 > 0:12:13An excellent performance overall. The big thing is Andrew Porter, the
0:12:13 > 0:12:17young tight head, adding some strength to the squad. Jordan
0:12:17 > 0:12:21Larimer is well getting some game time. It was a really good outing
0:12:21 > 0:12:26for Ireland. Robbie Henshaw is really important and the injuries
0:12:26 > 0:12:31will be a worry. But overall it was great to see.Ireland have the
0:12:31 > 0:12:35talisman of Johnny Sexton and Finn Russell will be under the spotlight
0:12:35 > 0:12:39today and you have been looking at him closely. He is a fantastic
0:12:39 > 0:12:44player and I played against him at the end of my career. He is good at
0:12:44 > 0:12:48picking slow, old forwards out in the defensive line. He sees the game
0:12:48 > 0:12:53a bit quicker than everyone else. He got some criticism during the week
0:12:53 > 0:12:57because he was enjoying himself. He is a player who needs to be relaxed,
0:12:57 > 0:13:02said there is nothing wrong with smiling and being relaxed. You need
0:13:02 > 0:13:09to lead the team a bit better than he does. Johnny Sexton and Owen
0:13:09 > 0:13:12Farrell pick and choose their moments brilliantly for Ireland and
0:13:12 > 0:13:16England. I think Finn Russell was trying to pull out a magic play
0:13:16 > 0:13:20every time the other day. He is amazing and he needs to let it
0:13:20 > 0:13:25happen at the right time and do the right thing for him and his team.
0:13:25 > 0:13:32This turnover was one of many and it led to the final Welsh try. I think
0:13:32 > 0:13:36it will be a big learning experience for him at the weekend. I expect a
0:13:36 > 0:13:42much better performance from him today. He is quite like the young
0:13:42 > 0:13:45Gregor Townsend. Gregor was quite mercurial at the start of his
0:13:45 > 0:13:51career.You want someone who wants to play and certainly the way
0:13:51 > 0:13:56Scotland play, he is ideal for them. But he just needs to pick and choose
0:13:56 > 0:14:02his moments a bit better. Sometimes when the defence are on the top it
0:14:02 > 0:14:07is part of rugby, and you probably need to go kicking. There are
0:14:07 > 0:14:16moments when you can have a crack and there is no better time when you
0:14:16 > 0:14:21are on top in the six Nations. It is about choosing your moments. We have
0:14:21 > 0:14:27now located the table!
0:14:33 > 0:14:38It is fair to say that the loser of this match here today at Murrayfield
0:14:38 > 0:14:47can kiss goodbye to any hopes of being champions. If most of the away
0:14:47 > 0:14:51fans travel more in hope than expectation, not the French because
0:14:51 > 0:14:55this is a very happy hunting ground for them. Although the conversation
0:14:55 > 0:15:01today will have centred on why the game last weekend could not have
0:15:01 > 0:15:06ended differently.
0:15:07 > 0:15:13ended differently. France, an old coach.
0:15:13 > 0:15:18coach. Simple, old-fashioned and worryingly frequent knee injuries.
0:15:18 > 0:15:24As for the rugby, little more than this, a one-man source of pent-up
0:15:24 > 0:15:30opportunities.You were not onside when you played that ball.And a
0:15:30 > 0:15:34one-man machine. France is never out of touch. But was this another knee
0:15:34 > 0:15:44injury? After 70 pretty forgettable minutes of rugby in the ring,
0:15:44 > 0:15:54suddenly and memorable finale. A conversion, a penalty and a final 40
0:15:54 > 0:16:04phase build-up. Everything leading to this. I Johnny Sexton special.
0:16:04 > 0:16:15Two small point the difference. But what a difference.
0:16:15 > 0:16:20They were talking about the French Number ten, having mentioned Finn
0:16:20 > 0:16:32Russell and Johnny Sexton and wearing the number ten
0:16:35 > 0:16:42jersey is Lionel Beauxis. Is this inspired or desperate?I think it is
0:16:42 > 0:16:49more desperate. The best number ten 's are foreigners. It is difficult
0:16:49 > 0:17:00for us to find. I think it is a mistake for Jacques Brunel giving it
0:17:00 > 0:17:07to Lionel Beauxis. He is a good player, maybe he can do something to
0:17:07 > 0:17:18help the French team. At the moment we are not looking forward to the
0:17:18 > 0:17:24future, we are just looking to win. It is a today selection and not a
0:17:24 > 0:17:28tomorrow's election. Last week, France against Ireland, and this is
0:17:28 > 0:17:33a real stat for the rugby nerd. The most tackles ever made in a single
0:17:33 > 0:17:37six Nations match last week by France against Ireland. The top five
0:17:37 > 0:17:42of those tackles are all against Arlen. I don't know what you read
0:17:42 > 0:17:47into that. Does that mean that the French defence last weekend was
0:17:47 > 0:17:54outstanding or that Ireland could not break it down?I would be saying
0:17:54 > 0:17:58why did they make that many tackles? Is it because France could not turn
0:17:58 > 0:18:04the ball over in defence? Did they not keep it in attack? You need to
0:18:04 > 0:18:09look a little bit deeper than the initial statistics.Clearly France
0:18:09 > 0:18:14can tackle. How do Scotland get away from them?France were very good
0:18:14 > 0:18:18around the rock and their forwards are very aggressive and they defend
0:18:18 > 0:18:20quite tight and they come off the line very fast.
0:18:24 > 0:18:28I don't think Scotland will want to take on France in these exchanges.
0:18:28 > 0:18:36On this occasion Ireland do not have enough numbers to go wide. Outside
0:18:36 > 0:18:41in that channel there was a lot of space and they did not follow up
0:18:41 > 0:18:48that defence. Ireland went pretty narrow and not wide. This means they
0:18:48 > 0:18:55can regenerate their whole backline.
0:18:55 > 0:19:02Ireland have got numbers to go wide on this occasion. They go wide and
0:19:02 > 0:19:11expose the channel. This is what Scotland are good at.
0:19:12 > 0:19:14Scotland are good at.Scotland will have to get the ball in that space
0:19:14 > 0:19:21as he has identified very well. This is the loudest PA system at any
0:19:21 > 0:19:24international ground. Is this part of the Scottish tactic? We need to
0:19:24 > 0:19:30try everything. The Scottish fans who went down to Cardiff last
0:19:30 > 0:19:35weekend had a long and dispiriting journey back home. Worth it
0:19:35 > 0:19:41performances in the autumn against the all Blacks an illusion? Today
0:19:41 > 0:19:44will not be easy because Scotland have only beaten France twice in the
0:19:44 > 0:19:52six Nations. There is a sense of expectation here at Murrayfield that
0:19:52 > 0:20:03we have not enjoyed for a while. And they score! Extraordinary. Surely
0:20:03 > 0:20:15they must score? And they do. Scottish pandemonium. There will be
0:20:15 > 0:20:19no French grand slam.France in recent times have dominated this
0:20:19 > 0:20:24fixture.
0:20:25 > 0:20:32fixture.A try for Scotland! And Duncan Taylor reaches for the line.
0:20:32 > 0:20:41What a try from Duncan Taylor. And France hit back.
0:20:43 > 0:20:49France hit back. What a finish! A win for Scotland.
0:20:50 > 0:20:53Apart from a couple of Scottish calamities here at Murrayfield in
0:20:53 > 0:21:002004 and in Paris a year after that, this fixture is hugely entertaining.
0:21:00 > 0:21:07Gregor Townsend is with Lee. After that tough weekend in Cardiff
0:21:07 > 0:21:11last weekend, the players are using phrases like redeem themselves and
0:21:11 > 0:21:17right the wrongs. How much pressure is on the Scotland side today? We
0:21:17 > 0:21:24probably do not focus on the pressure. We are focusing on the
0:21:24 > 0:21:28French speed, what they do at set pieces, but we demand a lot of
0:21:28 > 0:21:31ourselves and last week was no good enough. We have a chance to what we
0:21:31 > 0:21:37are good at and what we can do very well and what we are about. What was
0:21:37 > 0:21:42it like at the camp this week?Very good. The first half of the week is
0:21:42 > 0:21:46finding out why certain things happened and what we would do
0:21:46 > 0:21:49differently. The second half of the week is building up and producing
0:21:49 > 0:21:54our best performance. The French team will pose different questions
0:21:54 > 0:22:00and Wales. What is the biggest threat from them today? They are
0:22:00 > 0:22:03physical team, so the set team is where they pride themselves in that
0:22:03 > 0:22:08area. The scrum, the line-out ball. In the last few games they have
0:22:08 > 0:22:14defended very well and they compete very hard. Having picked a kicking
0:22:14 > 0:22:17stand-off, maybe they are looking for their defence to play a bigger
0:22:17 > 0:22:22role. We have to make sure that we are accurate and we work hard and
0:22:22 > 0:22:28take our chances.Six changes to the side, Greg Laidlaw stars. What do
0:22:28 > 0:22:32you expect? He is an excellent player and he is back in form and in
0:22:32 > 0:22:36full fitness. His role at number nine is important and it will ensure
0:22:36 > 0:22:44we get quick ball away. But also what he does is his experience and
0:22:44 > 0:22:49his leadership will help us a lot. Thank you very much. In Cardiff last
0:22:49 > 0:22:53week the first question I asked you was, it is already a big call
0:22:53 > 0:22:57picking Ali Price at scrum-half and he said it was an obvious thing to
0:22:57 > 0:23:04do. Is this a big call?Ali Price has been almost his own
0:23:04 > 0:23:08personification of Greg Laidlaw's tactics and how he wants to play. I
0:23:08 > 0:23:13felt last week he struggled on the tactics. Greg Laidlaw has been
0:23:13 > 0:23:18brought in for his leadership and his game management and the ability
0:23:18 > 0:23:22at times to control Finn Russell. Let him play, because that is what
0:23:22 > 0:23:27Scotland want him to do, but control him and play him in the right areas
0:23:27 > 0:23:36and just have that calm voice around him. Last week Cornell du Preez, Ali
0:23:36 > 0:23:41Price and Finn Russell, Huw Jones, they have changed three out of four,
0:23:41 > 0:23:46so to control Finn Russell and with Greg Laidlaw it will allow him to
0:23:46 > 0:23:52play his game and let the others be almost the tactical awareness, the
0:23:52 > 0:23:55game management. Almost to put the handbrake on him at times and then
0:23:55 > 0:24:02take it off as well. You want Finn Russell to play his natural game.
0:24:02 > 0:24:07Peter Horne is equally important. Either side of that he can allow
0:24:07 > 0:24:12Finn Russell to play his game and let these guys control what is
0:24:12 > 0:24:16happening around him.Do you think the French will target Finn Russell
0:24:16 > 0:24:21today? Are they hoping he will have an erratic game again?I think
0:24:21 > 0:24:25France is more focused on what they want to do and Jacques Brunel is
0:24:25 > 0:24:31looking for the confidence. He wants them to be clear with the set piece,
0:24:31 > 0:24:40the line-out. Maybe they will be waiting for the turnover to
0:24:40 > 0:24:44counterattack and score. At the moment France is not able to play
0:24:44 > 0:24:56like we like to see them play. But it will be step-by-step.We have to
0:24:56 > 0:25:00be patient. Turnovers are very key and the Scottish back row showed
0:25:00 > 0:25:05changes from last week. What do you read into this?Scotland struggled a
0:25:05 > 0:25:07little bit at line-out against Wales.
0:25:11 > 0:25:17You want to have a success rate of 90% plus. Brian Wilson is a very
0:25:17 > 0:25:21good line-out option. He is a very good leader in the Scottish team and
0:25:21 > 0:25:28he is aggressive as well.It is all about the passion and getting the
0:25:28 > 0:25:32emotion right. He carried the ball very well in the last five minutes
0:25:32 > 0:25:39last week. I think he has been brought in to spice up the pack. He
0:25:39 > 0:25:42has got the right attitude to be the leader upfront to take this pack
0:25:42 > 0:25:56forward.A quick thought about the French front row.
0:25:56 > 0:26:01French front row. Tell us about Guirado.I think he is one of the
0:26:01 > 0:26:05world's best hookers. I thought he was brilliant last week and he is a
0:26:05 > 0:26:10real go to man for France. How much is today about the mind given what
0:26:10 > 0:26:16happened last week for Scotland? The start is very much about the mind
0:26:16 > 0:26:20because the physical then has to take over. I want Scotland to come
0:26:20 > 0:26:24firing out of the blocks from the changing room and play with that
0:26:24 > 0:26:29real attitude and passion in the first ten minutes and take France on
0:26:29 > 0:26:33physically. They cannot do that the whole game because France are big
0:26:33 > 0:26:37side, but then allowed their natural game to evolve. It is a beautiful
0:26:37 > 0:26:43day, can we see some running rugby from France today?I don't think so.
0:26:43 > 0:26:51I don't think we are able to play that kind of game. I don't think
0:26:51 > 0:26:57they want to go too fast. They have some new players, it is a new coach.
0:26:57 > 0:27:01Many things have happened over the last few months for France. I think
0:27:01 > 0:27:08we have to wait before we see a new French team.New coach, new French
0:27:08 > 0:27:13team, two sides waiting in the tunnel as you can see. Final word
0:27:13 > 0:27:18from you, Sam. What kind of a game might this be? Can Scotland afford
0:27:18 > 0:27:24to throw caution to the wind?It is perfect whether to do that. I hope
0:27:24 > 0:27:27Scotland stick to what they can do over the last few months, just play
0:27:27 > 0:27:32rugby.
0:27:33 > 0:27:36rugby. I am going to go with home advantage today and Scotland will
0:27:36 > 0:27:42win.Scotland loved playing at Murrayfield, the atmosphere is great
0:27:42 > 0:27:47and they have had a good record here recently. Let's hope they get their
0:27:47 > 0:27:54campaign back on track. Some great pictures in this stadium on a
0:27:54 > 0:28:00glorious afternoon and there is a huge French contingent. You can hear
0:28:00 > 0:28:07them in Murrayfield, there is a beautiful, blue sky. Polo,
0:28:07 > 0:28:11Glaisdale, crisp, numbing, it may not be South Korea, but we need a
0:28:11 > 0:28:15match that is heart-warming and heart stirring because it really is
0:28:15 > 0:28:22a bit party. But here we go with the third instalment of the second round
0:28:22 > 0:28:30of the six Nations in 2018. Paul O'Connell, Chris Pattinson and
0:28:30 > 0:28:34Andrew Cotter are your commentators.
0:29:13 > 0:29:21# Marchons, marchons
0:29:23 > 0:29:31# Qu'un sang impur Abreuve nos sillons #.
0:29:33 > 0:29:41CHEERING
0:29:41 > 0:29:46Ladies and gentlemen, led by a lone piper, please remain standing for
0:29:46 > 0:29:53the national anthem of Scotland.
0:29:53 > 0:29:57# O flower of Scotland
0:29:57 > 0:30:04# When will we see your like again
0:30:04 > 0:30:08# That fought and died for
0:30:08 > 0:30:11# Your wee bit hill and glen
0:30:11 > 0:30:15# And stood against him
0:30:15 > 0:30:20# Proud Edward's army
0:30:20 > 0:30:24# And sent him homeward
0:30:24 > 0:30:28# Tae think again
0:30:28 > 0:30:32# Those days are passed now
0:30:32 > 0:30:39# And in the past they must remain
0:30:39 > 0:30:43# But we can still rise now
0:30:43 > 0:30:46# And be the nation again
0:30:46 > 0:30:50# That stood against him
0:30:50 > 0:30:55# Proud Edward's army
0:30:55 > 0:30:58# And sent him homeward
0:30:58 > 0:31:05# Tae think again. #
0:31:08 > 0:31:12The sound of Murrayfield for the first time in this championship and
0:31:12 > 0:31:16where last week much was expected of Scotland this week agreed deal is
0:31:16 > 0:31:19demanded and these are the players who tried to deliver. Simon Berghan
0:31:19 > 0:31:25returns from a ban maybe not the strongest scrummager but he brings
0:31:25 > 0:31:29bulk and ball carrying. Greater size in the second row with Grant
0:31:29 > 0:31:34Gilchrist in Fort Ben Toolis. The main change that scrum-half in the
0:31:34 > 0:31:39backs, Greig Laidlaw is different to Ali Price, still no Alex Dunbar in
0:31:39 > 0:31:45midfield, Huw Jones moves back to outside centre, Sean Maitland is in
0:31:45 > 0:31:52for Byron McGuigan. Not so many changes for France, Kevin Gordon is
0:31:52 > 0:31:57out so number eight is Marco Tauleigne. A powerful front five.
0:31:57 > 0:32:00The front row will expect to make their presence felt. Two changes in
0:32:00 > 0:32:10the backs, Geoffrey Doumayrou comes in at centre and the biggest talking
0:32:10 > 0:32:17point, the return after six years of Lionel Beauxis at fly half. On the
0:32:17 > 0:32:21bench, for Scotland Dave Denton returns to bring energy to the back
0:32:21 > 0:32:26row and Blair Kinghorn could make his debut. Louis Picamoles is back
0:32:26 > 0:32:33on the bench for France. The conditions are near-perfect if
0:32:33 > 0:32:39somewhat chilly. The stage is set, a lot of French supporters in who have
0:32:39 > 0:32:44been making themselves heard but it is a home match for the Scottish
0:32:44 > 0:32:51point of view and a welcome home match. There is Lionel Beauxis. A
0:32:51 > 0:32:55very different type of game they are expected to play with him, he will
0:32:55 > 0:33:01try to take and control, Chris. He will look to kick and kick
0:33:01 > 0:33:05contestables to get this big forward pack into the game. John Lacey will
0:33:05 > 0:33:13have his work cut out.The final game of the second weekend underway,
0:33:13 > 0:33:18the message has been clear from Scotland, they will try to play a
0:33:18 > 0:33:25creative, high paced game. Fewer errors and a bit more direction.
0:33:25 > 0:33:29Hamish Watson was one of the ball carriers last week but you can hear
0:33:29 > 0:33:34the French fans and immediately wide from Scotland but Maitland has no
0:33:34 > 0:33:42way round Teddy Thomas.
0:33:42 > 0:33:53way round Teddy Thomas. Jonny Gray a blend -- upended.
0:33:53 > 0:33:59blend -- upended. Taken well by Palis but Huw Jones gets to him. An
0:33:59 > 0:34:02opportunity and immediately Vakatawa will try to punch holes in the
0:34:02 > 0:34:10Scottish defence. Guirado goes out why to Teddy Thomas and good hands
0:34:10 > 0:34:18to Lamerat and he just get it back to Thomas. Machenaud again.
0:34:18 > 0:34:21to Thomas. Machenaud again. Good defensive work by McInally but
0:34:21 > 0:34:27smuggled back and hit at pace and good work by Doumayrou. The La
0:34:27 > 0:34:31Rochelle centre taking his chance well in the opening moments. Some
0:34:31 > 0:34:39power from Camara. The turnover was good but lost and France get an
0:34:39 > 0:34:42opportunity once more.
0:34:45 > 0:34:54Contest on the floor. France have it once more. Machenaud to Yacouba
0:34:54 > 0:35:00Camara, the Montpellier flanker. The French fans making noise again.
0:35:00 > 0:35:11Palis trying to find a way past Laidlaw. Into the Scottish half come
0:35:11 > 0:35:19les Bleus.
0:35:19 > 0:35:25The pass eventually comes to Teddy Thomas and he slips past Finn
0:35:25 > 0:35:29Russell and the is there again and he is doing it once more! Teddy
0:35:29 > 0:35:38Thomas! Deja vu at Murrayfield! Teddy Thomas as he did in Paris,
0:35:38 > 0:35:42does here again at Edinburgh and what a start for him and France.
0:35:42 > 0:35:47Incredible start the ball was in play for two and a half minute an
0:35:47 > 0:35:50enormous identical try from last week from Teddy Thomas. His
0:35:50 > 0:35:55confidence must be high, he shrugged off Finn Russell and turned on the
0:35:55 > 0:36:03afterburners. A fantastic try and he seems to be in good form.
0:36:04 > 0:36:07seems to be in good form.As Paul says, two and a half minutes and not
0:36:07 > 0:36:12ticked at all by the French. A bit scrappy at times, Thomas had it all
0:36:12 > 0:36:16to do but he got on the outside of Russell and he could have passed it
0:36:16 > 0:36:20but he decided to take on Hogg and had the power and strength to get
0:36:20 > 0:36:25over for his seventh try. So electric with ball in hand. We all
0:36:25 > 0:36:28thought the French would kick but they have come to play.We have
0:36:28 > 0:36:32heard from the French camp, letting messages slip out, it'll be a game
0:36:32 > 0:36:40with Beauxis, one game plan and then another. It looked like he was
0:36:40 > 0:36:44trying to take but John Barclay got at him and stopped him but the rest
0:36:44 > 0:36:47of the Scottish team had to react to that and shut it off.Conversion
0:36:47 > 0:36:57attempt for Maxime Machenaud.
0:37:00 > 0:37:08Accompanied by the Marseillaise from the stands. Scotland gave away an
0:37:08 > 0:37:11early try in Cardiff last week and have done so again here at
0:37:11 > 0:37:14Murrayfield and what a finish. It was a good finish but it was one on
0:37:14 > 0:37:21one tackles missed. The bounce pass is often the best in rugby! It puts
0:37:21 > 0:37:26the defence on their heels.Scotland will look for a response but France
0:37:26 > 0:37:30already looking lively.
0:37:33 > 0:37:39Machenaud sends up the box-kick. Wenceslas Lauret chasing for France
0:37:39 > 0:37:49but taken well enough. Barclay feeds Ryan Wilson.
0:37:52 > 0:37:59Simon Berghan, brought in for some ball carrying. Hamish Watson,
0:37:59 > 0:38:08deceptively strong. Russell once more to Jonny Gray. Gordon Reid and
0:38:08 > 0:38:14Wilson lend a hand. Russell again. Hugh Jones spills in the contact,
0:38:14 > 0:38:23French ball again. French scrum.Big first scrum Fort Simon Berghan. He
0:38:23 > 0:38:28has not played in six weeks after his suspension over Christmas. This
0:38:28 > 0:38:32is a part of the game that was weak for Scotland certainly towards the
0:38:32 > 0:38:38end of the game last week against Wales. A big moment for the Scottish
0:38:38 > 0:38:42scrum. It France sent weakness here, they could go after them all day.
0:38:42 > 0:38:49Looking at the front rows, Slimani is one of the best scrummagers in
0:38:49 > 0:38:52the world come up against Gordon Reid and Guirado is a good
0:38:52 > 0:38:56scrummager as well, and Jefferson Poirot against Berghan but an injury
0:38:56 > 0:39:04at the moment. That was the bounce pass. It puts the defence on their
0:39:04 > 0:39:09heels, Thomas is first to react and he is so quick also get outside Pete
0:39:09 > 0:39:12Horne and his team-mates would have been frustrated if he did not make
0:39:12 > 0:39:17it but he had all the confidence, his second try in two weeks and that
0:39:17 > 0:39:21is what it means, scoring within two minutes. Scotland wanted and needed
0:39:21 > 0:39:26a good start after last weekend but Teddy Thomas and France got it.It
0:39:26 > 0:39:31takes the sting out of the home crowd when you travelling team, if
0:39:31 > 0:39:36you can silence the spectators. The first scrum and as Paul said, it is
0:39:36 > 0:39:42a big moment because France should have the upper in this department.
0:39:58 > 0:40:01Machenaud not happy and John Lacey will let them do it again.I need
0:40:01 > 0:40:10your height up.He is a tall pop, Simon Berghan. Scrummaging is not
0:40:10 > 0:40:16his forte but he is getting better. Richard Cockerill as talk about that
0:40:16 > 0:40:21at Edinburgh. He is coming back from a six-week ban and up against
0:40:21 > 0:40:24Jefferson Poirot.
0:40:30 > 0:40:34Penalty to France is the result of the first scrum. Back slaps all
0:40:34 > 0:40:45round.Very hard to see from here. John Lacey was saying that Gordon
0:40:45 > 0:40:50Reid went down to his knees early will stop it is hard to tell but it
0:40:50 > 0:40:56is still an important moment. This is one place where forwards can
0:40:56 > 0:40:58influence territory. If you give away penalties in the scrum or in
0:40:58 > 0:41:05the ruck, you can get 40 or 50 yards down the field and you now have the
0:41:05 > 0:41:11French running at the Scottish. Guirado and sent back beautifully
0:41:11 > 0:41:17and a chance for Remi Lamerat to carry for a moment and then
0:41:17 > 0:41:29Jefferson Poirot. France with a direct approach here.
0:41:29 > 0:41:32direct approach here. Machenaud take the loop around and the kick is half
0:41:32 > 0:41:40charged down. Scotland secure possession and will try to get some
0:41:40 > 0:41:51go forward. Berghan setting it back. Gray and Gilchrist and Watson and a
0:41:51 > 0:41:55penalty to France. Scotland yielding possession again. A familiar tale
0:41:55 > 0:42:02for those who watched last week.I think it was sealing off.A good
0:42:02 > 0:42:06poached by the French. It is amazing to see them take the line-out of the
0:42:06 > 0:42:09top and into the middle of the field, putting their forwards around
0:42:09 > 0:42:16the ball.It was Wenceslas Lauret who got in first and over the ball.
0:42:16 > 0:42:31Strong.Rabah Slimani is not looking at all good at the moment.
0:42:31 > 0:42:38What does John Lacey mean by transferring weight? Slimani is key.
0:42:38 > 0:42:43Is he setting his stall out early on because the first scrum was a
0:42:43 > 0:42:47penalty to underline his position? It is a very hard part of the game
0:42:47 > 0:42:52to referee. I know John Lacey, he used to play for Munster and he
0:42:52 > 0:43:00lives very near me and he does a lot of work refereeing the scrum and he
0:43:00 > 0:43:05referees the Munster training for the scrum and Irish training.
0:43:05 > 0:43:13Machenaud with his second kick at goal. Ideal start for France, ten
0:43:13 > 0:43:18points within ten minutes here at Murrayfield. Scotland looking to put
0:43:18 > 0:43:23right the wrongs of last week but so far it is all France. The penalties,
0:43:23 > 0:43:27the one from the scrum that allowed France to get field position and
0:43:27 > 0:43:30then Scotland turn it over and got penalised again and two minutes
0:43:30 > 0:43:36later it is 10-0 already.
0:43:44 > 0:43:51Up it goes from Maxime Machenaud. Yacouba Camara almost got to it but
0:43:51 > 0:43:57a little knock forward so Scotland will have the scrum. These aerial
0:43:57 > 0:44:04battles are so important, we saw them yesterday at Twickenham. A lot
0:44:04 > 0:44:11of teams using the box-kick with the wind chasing and you need a solid
0:44:11 > 0:44:20full-back orc winker under the high ball is -- or winger. It can hold up
0:44:20 > 0:44:25in that channel by the East stand, almost blows the ball back infield.
0:44:25 > 0:44:35And Tamara is so good in the air and athletic -- Camara. The scrum under
0:44:35 > 0:44:40scrutiny, Nigel Owens on the touchline. Scotland holding firm but
0:44:40 > 0:44:47away it comes through Wilson and now with Russell and out wide and a
0:44:47 > 0:44:53chance for Scotland. Chasing that is Tommy Seymour and Teddy Thomas plays
0:44:53 > 0:44:57a bit of football and he whacks it into the West stand, try scorer and
0:44:57 > 0:45:03last man covering for France. Excellent kick by Stuart Hogg, it
0:45:03 > 0:45:06was perfectly weighted to make France put it out. Scotland bought
0:45:06 > 0:45:11five metres out and it is a real try scoring opportunity. It was good
0:45:11 > 0:45:14from Scotland to apply the pressure because the scrum had skewed the
0:45:14 > 0:45:19wrong way. That was the space that Sam Warburton was on about.Space on
0:45:19 > 0:45:22the edge to attack France. The line-out did not go well against
0:45:22 > 0:45:29Wales. Gilchrist is the line-out call and now the whole of
0:45:29 > 0:45:36Murrayfield calls for a drive but not going anywhere at the moment.
0:45:36 > 0:45:39Laidlaw points and Scotland make their way to the line but the ball
0:45:39 > 0:45:45is still back at source. Everybody lost for a moment. Back at the feet
0:45:45 > 0:45:52of Gordon Reid. He carries himself with Barclay and Berghan. Scotland
0:45:52 > 0:46:06had to come again. The French event in the starting blocks. Jonny Gray.
0:46:06 > 0:46:12-- French defence. Through comes Iturria and a good counter ruck by
0:46:12 > 0:46:16France but it is now Hogg with some space to run and tried to step
0:46:16 > 0:46:19through the heavy traffic.
0:46:22 > 0:46:26Jonny Gray bounces off one man, Machenaud felt that Gilchrist and
0:46:26 > 0:46:32Russell gives the past and it is Maitland for the try! Scotland
0:46:32 > 0:46:36working well and Maitland finishes it and Scotland hit back at
0:46:36 > 0:46:42Murrayfield.Fantastic carry from Jonny Gray, he gets outside the
0:46:42 > 0:46:50defender, off-loads to Gilchrist. He puts Finn Russell away who puts
0:46:50 > 0:46:55Maitland in. Fantastic try and very sensible from Scotland, to get into
0:46:55 > 0:46:59the corner, the five metre Drive, they don't score from the drive but
0:46:59 > 0:47:04hang on to the ball and that was the important thing. That was the big
0:47:04 > 0:47:08carry from Jonny Gray, the pass from Gilchrist allowed space to be
0:47:08 > 0:47:13attacked on the outside and Russell delivered it. That was Machenaud,
0:47:13 > 0:47:18the smallest man on the field, a tough number nine but the second row
0:47:18 > 0:47:23and Scotland get it free on the edge of the patient build-up after the
0:47:23 > 0:47:27initial line-out drive that was well defended by the French but Sean
0:47:27 > 0:47:30Maitland keeps his width and scores in the left corner. And for Byron
0:47:30 > 0:47:36McGuigan who had a hamstring injury, Maitland has now scored a few tries
0:47:36 > 0:47:41for Scotland, this is his seventh and right in the corner. A tough
0:47:41 > 0:47:49kick and the man taking the kicks today is Greig Laidlaw.
0:47:49 > 0:47:56He has done very well indeed. It looked a bit tired as it reached
0:47:56 > 0:48:01halfway but it made it and from that angle it is a wonderful conversion.
0:48:01 > 0:48:05It is, it is a strong wind in the far corner. Gilchrist shifting it
0:48:05 > 0:48:12on. They were expecting the second row to carry but another look at the
0:48:12 > 0:48:16conversion which just made it over. Extra two points for Scotland.
0:48:16 > 0:48:18conversion which just made it over. Extra two points for Scotland.
0:48:18 > 0:48:19Lionel Beauxis with length on the
0:48:19 > 0:48:21Extra two points for Scotland. Lionel Beauxis with length on the
0:48:21 > 0:48:26restart but that kick is charged down, it is a big in-goal area. The
0:48:26 > 0:48:32ball is dead. Hogg was ready to send that the length of the pitch but a
0:48:32 > 0:48:41good charge down. Both kickers have been caught. Lahmert charged it in
0:48:41 > 0:48:52the shins, it must have been low from Stuart Hogg.
0:48:53 > 0:48:57The restart from Russell. He gives it some height and a bit of
0:48:57 > 0:49:07distance. Geoffrey Palis gathers it in. Beauxis finds Sebastien
0:49:07 > 0:49:11Vahaamahina. The mountain on the move.
0:49:18 > 0:49:25Lamerat tries to slip it to Thomas, John Lacey said it went backwards.
0:49:25 > 0:49:32Lamerat was able to salvage it.
0:49:42 > 0:49:47Machenaud onto Remi Lamerat again. He keeps his hands free, thinking
0:49:47 > 0:49:50about the off-load.
0:49:53 > 0:49:59Teddy Thomas is at it again come almost. It was Barclay and Berghan
0:49:59 > 0:50:05who got to him as Vahaamahina goes into Gilchrist. That goes out
0:50:05 > 0:50:11sideways and Scotland have a chance to counter. Hogg had to check and
0:50:11 > 0:50:16take the pass and quickly taken down by Doumayrou.
0:50:17 > 0:50:31Barclay into Lamerat. Simon Berghan feeding Gilchrist. He goes into
0:50:31 > 0:50:39Arthur Iturria. Scotland creeping forward. McInally and Watson, well
0:50:39 > 0:50:51met by Guirado. Russell with a low kick and Palis has time. That is a
0:50:51 > 0:50:56good-looking kick as well, just stays infield for Stuart Hogg. He
0:50:56 > 0:51:05sends it high. Vakatawa take it well, powerful winker. He decides to
0:51:05 > 0:51:11feed it on but the pass from Marco Tauleigne is beyond Teddy, but an
0:51:11 > 0:51:19opportunity still for Lamerat -- Teddy Thomas. A great charge by
0:51:19 > 0:51:24Iturria, it goes to Scottish hands though. Quick thinking by Machenaud
0:51:24 > 0:51:30in defence. Russell with the long pass to Barclay and Hogg now with a
0:51:30 > 0:51:38little step to delay and he feeds Jones who is taken down by Vakatawa.
0:51:38 > 0:51:42Still on the Scottish side.
0:51:49 > 0:51:56Russell, that was half touched and goes to French hands and forward
0:51:56 > 0:52:00comes Geoffrey Palis. A message
0:52:04 > 0:52:04--
0:52:10 > 0:52:13Stuart Hogg decides to take and there is huge space back there and
0:52:13 > 0:52:21Vakatawa seems in no hurry. All the players tiring. Vakatawa prize
0:52:21 > 0:52:28defines speed but was taken down well. -- tries to find. It is a
0:52:28 > 0:52:35wrestle on the ground but France still have possession. Machenaud
0:52:35 > 0:52:41taking a quiet moment to himself. He gives it on and Poirot with a little
0:52:41 > 0:52:48rumble.
0:52:52 > 0:52:56Some players are hands on knees, it has been a tiring passage of play
0:52:56 > 0:53:00and the French fans are trying to lift their team. Russell coming
0:53:00 > 0:53:07forward and take that well. Attention from Beauxis. Laidlaw to
0:53:07 > 0:53:09Berghan.
0:53:13 > 0:53:17A bit of thunder from him over the ten metre line. McInally is what
0:53:17 > 0:53:25they can buy Slimani and Camara. This will test the fitness of both
0:53:25 > 0:53:34teams. Palis deals with that and steps around Jonny Gray.
0:53:35 > 0:53:38steps around Jonny Gray. France is trying to add some direction through
0:53:38 > 0:53:48Tauleigne. It goes to Beauxis. Once again, it is Russell Fielding. A
0:53:48 > 0:53:56little hitch kick but Teddy Thomas gets to him. Penalty to Scotland.
0:53:56 > 0:54:05Everybody can finally rehydrate and gather and take stock.Similar
0:54:05 > 0:54:10penalty to the two John Barclay gave away just after half-time last week
0:54:10 > 0:54:13where the French number four Iturria put his hands onto the floor before
0:54:13 > 0:54:18he got to the ball but very long periods of play and I think that
0:54:18 > 0:54:24might suit Scotland. I think they are fitter. France made 253 tackles
0:54:24 > 0:54:29last week in the Irish game which was a Six Nations record so there
0:54:29 > 0:54:35will be a few tired bodies and I think those long period will suit
0:54:35 > 0:54:41Scotland and picked out a few tired French forwards eventually.Line-out
0:54:41 > 0:54:47to Scotland. McInally goes to Gilchrist again and did well to take
0:54:47 > 0:54:53that. Horne reaching for that one.
0:55:00 > 0:55:08Penalty France. It was Doumayrou who got over the ball in the outside
0:55:08 > 0:55:11channel and that is what France want, they give you the space on the
0:55:11 > 0:55:16outside. Sean Maitland got possession behind the Scottish line
0:55:16 > 0:55:20as John Lacey has a couple of words with John Barclay who is trying to
0:55:20 > 0:55:22clear up what happened.
0:55:22 > 0:55:28France put massive pressure on the breakdown. Scotland already
0:55:28 > 0:55:35conceding three penalties.
0:55:35 > 0:55:42Beauxis finds touch. This was the tackle by Vakatawa and Doumayrou was
0:55:42 > 0:55:47over it straightaway in a really stronger position. Barclay and I
0:55:47 > 0:55:55think it is Finn Russell cannot clear him out.
0:55:58 > 0:56:01That penalty came in the first phase, similar to last week with
0:56:01 > 0:56:06Scotland when they had good first phase possession.Already ten
0:56:06 > 0:56:11tackles missed by Scotland, just two by France but their line-out is
0:56:11 > 0:56:18stolen and Berghan goes up. Hamish Watson again, one of the smallest
0:56:18 > 0:56:26forwards but one of the strongest as well. A wrecking ball. Russell over
0:56:26 > 0:56:32the head of Vakatawa and out on the full and a groan from the crowd.
0:56:32 > 0:56:37Nobody is more frustrated than Finn Russell himself. It was the right
0:56:37 > 0:56:41option but the execution let him down. There was space. Scotland were
0:56:41 > 0:56:47moving backwards, but similar to the penalty before that, conceding
0:56:47 > 0:56:51possession and one or two phases after winning it back. It is
0:56:51 > 0:56:56difficult to put pressure on the opposition.Plenty of his future
0:56:56 > 0:57:01Racing 92 team-mate in the French team, Russell heading there this
0:57:01 > 0:57:06summer.
0:57:06 > 0:57:10Vakatawa tries to go past Huw Jones, make and tried to strip him but
0:57:10 > 0:57:15still with France.
0:57:15 > 0:57:23Machenaud is being told to use it. There is a healthy debate he is
0:57:23 > 0:57:33having with John Lacey. He eventually does use it.
0:57:42 > 0:57:45Beauxis just drops his head into the knees of Jonny Gray and a little
0:57:45 > 0:57:52spill forward and Scotland will have the scrum.
0:57:52 > 0:57:55the scrum.Beauxis has taken a lot of contacts, I think Scotland are
0:57:55 > 0:58:00trying to fly up on his outside to force him back in and most of the
0:58:00 > 0:58:07kicking is coming from Machenaud and Palis.Jacques Brunel knows Beauxis,
0:58:07 > 0:58:12he played under him at Bordeaux, big sis. They could about Trinh-Duc,
0:58:12 > 0:58:20Jules Plisson, but Beauxis got the shot today. The French first phase
0:58:20 > 0:58:24looks quite good but after that they have not been so good and that is
0:58:24 > 0:58:30where Scotland can pressure them. They have not had a lot of time with
0:58:30 > 0:58:34the coach. The first phase is quite easy but after more time with the
0:58:34 > 0:58:40code, that might help. Not many scrums sober in the game. Scotland
0:58:40 > 0:58:47ball but they have felt the pressure in the last one. -- not many scrums
0:58:47 > 0:58:55so far in the game. That it was well placed and Palis is under the cosh
0:58:55 > 0:59:00and Maitland and Hogg tried to hold him up and move him towards touch.
0:59:00 > 0:59:09Palis has done well with a bit of help.
0:59:11 > 0:59:17Rolling forward, Wenceslas Lauret and picked up by YouGov camera.
0:59:17 > 0:59:21Beauxis and Tauleigne and France coming again. Slimani, good
0:59:21 > 0:59:28handling, Guirado bounces into Berghan. France into the Scottish
0:59:28 > 0:59:38half again. Good play to Marco Tauleigne. Rabah Slimani. Ambitious
0:59:38 > 0:59:43pass to Guirado but the captain does well.
0:59:48 > 0:59:54Yacouba Camara again, wrestled down by Jonny Gray. Beauxis gives it deep
0:59:54 > 1:00:00to Lamerat and to Doumayrou add on to Teddy Thomas again. The chip and
1:00:00 > 1:00:04chase and three French men chasing it and Laidlaw and it bounces for
1:00:04 > 1:00:14Teddy Thomas! Try number two for France! Teddy Thomas once again. It
1:00:14 > 1:00:19was great work across by Greig Laidlaw to cover the chip but just a
1:00:19 > 1:00:23horrible bounce of the rugby ball did it and it is all going to Teddy
1:00:23 > 1:00:27Thomas's way. I thought Scotland had that cupboard and is not the first
1:00:27 > 1:00:31time we saw it. Last time against Wales, when teams go wide against
1:00:31 > 1:00:37them they seem to struggle.YouTube the camera set up the first one and
1:00:37 > 1:00:42he was prominent. The ball is moved to the outside again. France are in
1:00:42 > 1:00:46total control because there was space to attack and Stuart Hogg as
1:00:46 > 1:00:50to come up and it is a foot race between Greig Laidlaw and Thomas and
1:00:50 > 1:00:56it is the cruellest bounce, the lack of bounce that does Laidlaw. This
1:00:56 > 1:00:59man is the X factor so far this afternoon and it was the same last
1:00:59 > 1:01:03week with his counterattack try against Ireland. He got fortunate
1:01:03 > 1:01:07there but the execution of the chip at full pace and his effort to get
1:01:07 > 1:01:11on the end of it gets the second try.Great to see some French
1:01:11 > 1:01:15off-loading as well from their forwards, playing some old-style
1:01:15 > 1:01:19French rugby which we thought we would never see again. Some exciting
1:01:19 > 1:01:24play from them and confidence is high now.Machenaud once again, a
1:01:24 > 1:01:36little bit breezy out there. His most straightforward kick so far.
1:01:36 > 1:01:43And Machenaud is on target once more and the try of Teddy Thomas is worth
1:01:43 > 1:01:49seven points and France are leading by ten.It is his eighth try, and he
1:01:49 > 1:01:53is getting space on the outside channel. Those are the most
1:01:53 > 1:01:56difficult tackles to make when he is out there but he is taking advantage
1:01:56 > 1:02:00of the space with his fast footwork and skill level.
1:02:03 > 1:02:11Marco Tauleigne takes that well and carries it in.
1:02:12 > 1:02:21Machenaud sending it high in front of the East stand again.
1:02:21 > 1:02:26The turnover is good, says John Lacey. Once again possession lost by
1:02:26 > 1:02:33Scotland.
1:02:35 > 1:02:40Camara pushes Stuart Hogg out of the way and picks and goes himself.
1:02:40 > 1:02:45Turnover this time and a penalty for Scotland.A lot of poaching going
1:02:45 > 1:02:51on. I think the ball carrier needs to work on the floor a bit more, a
1:02:51 > 1:02:57little twist and turn and place the ball longer and make the poacher go
1:02:57 > 1:03:04off his feet. And then overambition from the penalty. We saw this last
1:03:04 > 1:03:09week from Finn Russell. As a forward you get so excited about this
1:03:09 > 1:03:12opportunity, you think you're going to be walking down into a drive six
1:03:12 > 1:03:17or seven metres down and it is so deflating when you see it go dead
1:03:17 > 1:03:21like that. That was the wind you were talking about. He was too
1:03:21 > 1:03:26ambitious, you can only get the line-out on the fibre line but the
1:03:26 > 1:03:29wind comes off that stand and blows it back in but he knows that and
1:03:29 > 1:03:33should be making sure.It ends in a scrum to France back on their ten
1:03:33 > 1:03:40metre line.
1:03:40 > 1:03:48It is a good view. These are the angles that are so interesting.
1:03:48 > 1:03:50angles that are so interesting. The loose head for France up against
1:03:50 > 1:03:59Berghan. Slimani up against a read.
1:04:02 > 1:04:10The crowd says it goes forward. We keep saying it, but that is not what
1:04:10 > 1:04:15we expected from France at all. A scrum deep in their own half where
1:04:15 > 1:04:19you would imagine there would be a contestable kick. Good ambition,
1:04:19 > 1:04:27good execution. This is where the play has been happening. Pretty even
1:04:27 > 1:04:36in that. Scotland get a chance to come again.
1:04:36 > 1:04:43Maitland tries to get something going from a standstill.
1:04:48 > 1:04:55Simon Berghan has been useful in the loose so far.
1:04:56 > 1:05:00loose so far. The chance that Laidlaw could not quite take. And
1:05:00 > 1:05:05then he was held back a little bit as he tried to gather at the second
1:05:05 > 1:05:13attempt, but France send it long anyway. Stuart Hall around the
1:05:13 > 1:05:18outside and he gives it to Hamish Watson. Scotland are far enough into
1:05:18 > 1:05:19the 22.
1:05:27 > 1:05:34It was a good hit by Doumayrou one Gilchrist. And through the gap goes
1:05:34 > 1:05:44Huw Jones under the post! Try for Scotland and Huw Jones does it
1:05:44 > 1:05:52again. He finishes, but the whole team was involved.A wonderful
1:05:52 > 1:05:55off-load at the back door and he carried it really well and he stayed
1:05:55 > 1:06:02on the left-hand side and cut a clean, superb angle off Greg Laidlaw
1:06:02 > 1:06:09to score under the post.We saw in the middle of the line of Scotland
1:06:09 > 1:06:15tried to go as quickly as they could. They tried to take quick
1:06:15 > 1:06:19tempo line-outs. The ball carrying of the Scottish forwards has been
1:06:19 > 1:06:26excellent. Watson and Gilchrist, carrying bought at the French and
1:06:26 > 1:06:33generating quick ball as well.Huw Jones has eight tries in 13 caps.
1:06:33 > 1:06:37The easiest of convergence brings Scotland to within three points. One
1:06:37 > 1:06:42of the things that is making it a great game to watch is both teams
1:06:42 > 1:06:46struggled to defend when the opposition go wide with the ball.
1:06:46 > 1:06:52That is what we love as viewers. We saw it with Robbie Henshaw yesterday
1:06:52 > 1:06:58as well. But you are right, both teams want to play today, the
1:06:58 > 1:07:05conditions are good and with quick possession it is great to see.It is
1:07:05 > 1:07:08the slowest wander back to halfway for France to restart the game.
1:07:08 > 1:07:16Scotland have more of a sense of urgency.
1:07:20 > 1:07:25That is the way Gregor Townsend wants them to play. He wants them to
1:07:25 > 1:07:30play with pace. It suits playing against the French team as well.
1:07:30 > 1:07:33They struggle when they are off the pace and you take them through
1:07:33 > 1:07:40phases.The initial tackle was OK, but the second body was not there in
1:07:40 > 1:07:45order to slow the ball down. The last French line-out was pinched,
1:07:45 > 1:07:48but this one was taken down simply.
1:07:53 > 1:07:59This good malt may well end in a penalty, but it is a good drive.
1:07:59 > 1:08:04Taking it out of touch is Scotland's early friend at the moment. And a
1:08:04 > 1:08:12penalty to Scotland.A big moment for Scotland. Gregor Townsend said
1:08:12 > 1:08:19he was expecting a good set piece from France in the maul. The
1:08:19 > 1:08:22Scottish drove them towards the touchline and a big tackle drove
1:08:22 > 1:08:28them back and got the penalty. That is psychologically a big moment in
1:08:28 > 1:08:32any game. When you expect something like that and you deal with it as
1:08:32 > 1:08:40well as the Scots did, it is a big moment. This was in the build-up to
1:08:40 > 1:08:47the tribe. The town overcame and France kicked away their advantage
1:08:47 > 1:08:48and eventually Huw Jones got his score.
1:09:07 > 1:09:14Scotland getting on the front foot again.
1:09:17 > 1:09:22Scottish advantage, a penalty coming. Just try a shot to nothing
1:09:22 > 1:09:29here perhaps. And it was nothing, but back they come for the Scottish
1:09:29 > 1:09:35penalty and a chance perhaps to knock it into the corner again. You
1:09:35 > 1:09:41cannot kick the ball forward out of rock. You can it back. Finn Russell
1:09:41 > 1:09:47has to get this right. These are the moments where he cannot get excited.
1:09:47 > 1:09:53The ball going into the 22.If you were a cautious man, this would go
1:09:53 > 1:10:00in on the 22 and that is where he has gone for it. Teddy Thomas with
1:10:00 > 1:10:07some acrobatics. It was a cracking effort. Did he have his goalkeeping
1:10:07 > 1:10:12gloves on? It was a bit wobbly from Finn Russell, but it is the outcome
1:10:12 > 1:10:17that Scotland were looking for. With the noise inside Murrayfield he is
1:10:17 > 1:10:21struggling to be heard. Gilchrist has taken over the line calling
1:10:21 > 1:10:29today.
1:10:29 > 1:10:34Hamish Watson in the scrum-half position. A good challenge and
1:10:34 > 1:10:41instead it was taken by Iturria.
1:10:44 > 1:10:47France with an opportunity to clear in the final minutes of this
1:10:47 > 1:10:49entertaining first half.
1:10:56 > 1:11:01Scotland will have the line-out again. Good line-out defence from
1:11:01 > 1:11:05France. We saw problems from Scotland's last week against Wales
1:11:05 > 1:11:10in the line-out and they are repeating it here again today.
1:11:10 > 1:11:18Gilchrist was making it clear that it is not always the hooker's fault.
1:11:18 > 1:11:21They had to reach across to take that, but it works well for
1:11:21 > 1:11:22Scotland.
1:11:28 > 1:11:37The French defence is good. Maitland goes into the French 22. France will
1:11:37 > 1:11:42earn the penalty, the ball not coming back. Horne complains, but it
1:11:42 > 1:11:53was good work by Tauleigne. Machenaud looks as if he has hurt
1:11:53 > 1:12:02his shoulder. He had the tackle around his legs. He was in a good
1:12:02 > 1:12:09position.I think the ball carriers could do more work on the ground,
1:12:09 > 1:12:13twist and turn and make the poacher go off his feet and over his centre
1:12:13 > 1:12:19of gravity.Looking at the tries so far. Teddy Thomas very early in the
1:12:19 > 1:12:27game. Poor defence perhaps, but try similar to the one he got in Paris.
1:12:27 > 1:12:31Those tackles are the most difficult to make because there is so much
1:12:31 > 1:12:37space. That was Scotland's first tried by Maitland. That bounce was
1:12:37 > 1:12:45unfortunate for Greg Laidlaw. And this is Huw Jones. It was delayed
1:12:45 > 1:12:51pass from Greg Laidlaw. That was after another long phase play.
1:12:51 > 1:12:55France are three points ahead, but it has been a cracking first half.
1:12:55 > 1:13:06Machenaud has been treated. Teddy Thomas, what a talent he is.
1:13:06 > 1:13:10And the touch is found and a couple of minutes remaining in the first
1:13:10 > 1:13:19half. The defence coaches look as if they are not enjoying it, but it has
1:13:19 > 1:13:25been entertaining from that point of view. Gregor Townsend will have a
1:13:25 > 1:13:32few things to talk about at half-time.
1:13:32 > 1:13:38Camara took it down for France.
1:13:41 > 1:13:47Advantage to France, a penalty comes and arrives and an opportunity to
1:13:47 > 1:13:54France to finish the first half with a score.
1:13:55 > 1:14:04a score. He is having words with the French hooker and captain, Guirado.
1:14:04 > 1:14:12It was five plus one in that case. It is tough when you lose these big
1:14:12 > 1:14:20moments. They are into their own 22 now and the pressure is on.That was
1:14:20 > 1:14:28a good kick as well. YouTube cam has had a very good opening first half.
1:14:28 > 1:14:35He is a crucial man in the line-out as well. The sound of Murrayfield
1:14:35 > 1:14:41turns French as well.
1:14:51 > 1:14:58Jones will be brought back for a penalty to France.
1:14:58 > 1:15:01penalty to France.Jonny Gray just bounced off the French jumper in the
1:15:01 > 1:15:06air.
1:15:07 > 1:15:13air. A penalty as well because the infringement was in the line-out.
1:15:13 > 1:15:16Maxine Machenaud comes forward and says he will take the kick and
1:15:16 > 1:15:21France will try and end with three points. A sensible decision.Yes,
1:15:21 > 1:15:28there is a swirling wind. That was a clear penalty. You could argue he
1:15:28 > 1:15:33was contesting for the ball, but you cannot make contact in the air at
1:15:33 > 1:15:41all. This is a big kick for Machenaud.
1:15:41 > 1:15:50A minute ago it was possession for them in the French 22.The wind will
1:15:50 > 1:15:55be coming into his face. The last touch of the first half to Maxine
1:15:55 > 1:16:01Machenaud.
1:16:03 > 1:16:08Or his kicks have been good so far in the first half. It stretches the
1:16:08 > 1:16:13lead to six points. Two tries apiece in this very entertaining first
1:16:13 > 1:16:17half. 20-14 to France.
1:16:27 > 1:16:30Hugely entertaining first half of rugby. Does about good enough to
1:16:30 > 1:16:35make you forget how cold it is and how important that try from Huw
1:16:35 > 1:16:40Jones is, his eighth in the 13 caps. Although obviously there was a
1:16:40 > 1:16:45penalty from Machenaud in the last play of the match and France have a
1:16:45 > 1:16:546-point lead.
1:16:55 > 1:17:01It strikes you as being a fairly level match, much more entertaining
1:17:01 > 1:17:06from the French perspective.
1:17:13 > 1:17:19And Olivier Magne, you did not expect them to play like that. They
1:17:19 > 1:17:27got confidence with a very early try at the beginning of the match. It
1:17:27 > 1:17:31was a very good first half for France.Having conceded a try very
1:17:31 > 1:17:38early, are you consoled that there is almost parity at half-time?
1:17:38 > 1:17:44Scotland rode the ebbs and flows out. It was not a good start. Some
1:17:44 > 1:17:50of the things we saw last week came out here. The inaccuracy with the
1:17:50 > 1:17:54picking. But they produced good rugby. It is a tight game, it is
1:17:54 > 1:17:58entertaining and I think the second half will be more of the same.
1:17:58 > 1:18:04Sound. I thought France at the beginning looked physical. They have
1:18:04 > 1:18:10a threat from out wide with Teddy Thomas and he looks a threat. But
1:18:10 > 1:18:14for the first 30 minutes the ball was in play for so long. That will
1:18:14 > 1:18:19have an effect on the less physical team in the second half.Scotland
1:18:19 > 1:18:25need to keep the tempo like the game had in the first 20 minutes.Thomas'
1:18:25 > 1:18:32try here was the first time that the ball was out of play. It was two
1:18:32 > 1:18:38minutes and 23 seconds before he tried his score here and it was
1:18:38 > 1:18:43almost an exact replica.
1:18:43 > 1:18:47almost an exact replica. That came out of many phases. When he picked
1:18:47 > 1:18:51the ball up there, you thought there was no chance that he would score at
1:18:51 > 1:19:00that try. Finn Russell is on him. He goes past Finn Russell. We know how
1:19:00 > 1:19:04quick he is. But Teddy Thomas just to get the angle. It was an
1:19:04 > 1:19:11opportune try really.Scotland were not that bad, they just missed
1:19:11 > 1:19:16tackles. Normally if they were structurally all over the place, you
1:19:16 > 1:19:21would have concerned. But you go into the second half and you say,
1:19:21 > 1:19:26you cannot afford to do that missed tackle at international level. When
1:19:26 > 1:19:35France have players like that why do they not use them more?
1:19:35 > 1:19:38they not use them more?We went through a very difficult series of
1:19:38 > 1:19:44defeats. You can lose confidence very fast. It is very slow to get it
1:19:44 > 1:19:49back. Of course we have to choose the player to play like we want them
1:19:49 > 1:19:59to play and to play for the international level. That is the way
1:19:59 > 1:20:03we have to play if we want to exist in the top four of international
1:20:03 > 1:20:12teams. But I agree with Sam. Are we able to play like that in the second
1:20:12 > 1:20:16half? To maintain the tempo and physically to be like that all
1:20:16 > 1:20:21through the match? That is a good question. It is interesting what you
1:20:21 > 1:20:25say about confidence. France have not won a match in their last seven
1:20:25 > 1:20:29internationals and they are desperate to win a game. Greg
1:20:29 > 1:20:33Maitland's try was key to get Scotland back in the match. In many
1:20:33 > 1:20:37ways this is what Scotland is all about. This was a much better setup
1:20:37 > 1:20:43than in Cardiff last week. Tommy Seymour in that wide channel created
1:20:43 > 1:20:48fantastic field position. Watch Jonny Gray here. That was a
1:20:48 > 1:20:53mismatch. That is Machenaud and he goes in there physically and pushes
1:20:53 > 1:21:01him out of the way. That allowed the passage of play to go to Gilchrist.
1:21:01 > 1:21:05It is a two on one and a simple try and it was very good play for
1:21:05 > 1:21:14Scotland.John Barclay in the middle of the week said how they needed to
1:21:14 > 1:21:18win their set pieces. They have a solid enough scrum where they
1:21:18 > 1:21:21eventually got a line-out. They won the line-out and it led to this and
1:21:21 > 1:21:25that is why set pieces are so important, they give you a platform
1:21:25 > 1:21:32to launch your attack. This is a final look at the Maitland tried. It
1:21:32 > 1:21:37is worth talking about the way the French are playing. With Beauxis
1:21:37 > 1:21:43playing his first international for France for six years and 26
1:21:43 > 1:21:47combinations have been tried in the intervening period. We expected him
1:21:47 > 1:21:53to get the ball and boot the leather off it. He has not done that today.
1:21:53 > 1:21:58He has not. International rugby has changed so much. He is controlling
1:21:58 > 1:22:05everything. He looks a bit tired. But he attacks the line and he gets
1:22:05 > 1:22:09the Scottish defence going back. This went through a couple of phases
1:22:09 > 1:22:15and he is still calling and talking and controlling it. Then watch this
1:22:15 > 1:22:22long past. This sets up the try out wide. Structurally Scotland's
1:22:22 > 1:22:26defence is good. Greg Laidlaw is in the right position. But the rugby
1:22:26 > 1:22:32ball can sometimes just bounce like that. Beauxis set that up by
1:22:32 > 1:22:37dairying his play. He is a class act even though he has been out of the
1:22:37 > 1:22:44international game for six years. He is good with his head, not only with
1:22:44 > 1:22:50his kick. But the start was very important because France started to
1:22:50 > 1:22:57play with their hands and they got the confidence by playing this way.
1:22:57 > 1:23:01That is maybe why Beauxis did not kick a lot. Maybe the second half
1:23:01 > 1:23:07will be different and tactically Beauxis needs to restore that to the
1:23:07 > 1:23:12game. I am not sure we are able to follow this rhythm all throughout
1:23:12 > 1:23:16the match.Huw Jones has an amazing try scoring record. I am not sure
1:23:16 > 1:23:25where the gap appeared, but he took the chance brilliantly.Beauxis is
1:23:25 > 1:23:29out opposition. You want a two or three forwards outside of that rock.
1:23:29 > 1:23:34You do not want the number ten to be the first guy out of that rut. Finn
1:23:34 > 1:23:41Russell caught the ball and he threw it straightaway to Stuart Hall. Get
1:23:41 > 1:23:47Stuart Hogg running at the defensive line. They made a lot of yards and
1:23:47 > 1:23:54then Huw Jones saw the gap. He saw Beauxis out opposition and he ran at
1:23:54 > 1:24:00his blind spot.Well done, Scotland. That is just instinct, having that
1:24:00 > 1:24:04sixth sense where the gap is. We have seen players over the years to
1:24:04 > 1:24:09have that ability. Huw Jones looks so much more comfortable in the
1:24:09 > 1:24:14number 13 shirt than he did in the 12 shirt last week in Cardiff.
1:24:14 > 1:24:19Half-time report on Finn Russell. Mixed. I think he has changed his
1:24:19 > 1:24:23game too much. He has tried to kick more in this first half and
1:24:23 > 1:24:30sometimes quite badly. It is finding that balance. Just getting the
1:24:30 > 1:24:35variety. Some of his kicks are bit aimless. And then sometimes he is
1:24:35 > 1:24:39looking for a little grubbers and that was aimless. He is trying to
1:24:39 > 1:24:45mix up the game which is one of the things he had to do, but it is the
1:24:45 > 1:24:49execution again. His kicking is good, but it has to be accurate.
1:24:49 > 1:24:53This is what we saw last week. This is criminal. Our hard earned
1:24:53 > 1:25:03penalty. But then the tactics and the change in selection with Peter
1:25:03 > 1:25:08Horne. He has got a left footed kick. It does not all have to go on
1:25:08 > 1:25:14Finn Russell's shoulders. I would say it has been mixed so far, but in
1:25:14 > 1:25:21attack he has got Scotland going which is good.Finn Russell was torn
1:25:21 > 1:25:24limb from limb by Clive Woodward about his performance last week. How
1:25:24 > 1:25:28much can that get to a player and how much will he have been conscious
1:25:28 > 1:25:34of that today?Personally if it was me I do not read anything that is
1:25:34 > 1:25:40going on outside of my camp. You want to hear about things directly
1:25:40 > 1:25:44through friends and team-mates. I think players when they are playing
1:25:44 > 1:25:49for an international test match it is water off a duck's back. You are
1:25:49 > 1:25:53only worrying about your job and the opposition. He will be aware of the
1:25:53 > 1:25:59comets, but I do not think he will have read anything into it.What do
1:25:59 > 1:26:06you make of that first half performance?From a neutral
1:26:06 > 1:26:10perspective, this game has been brilliant. The weather has been
1:26:10 > 1:26:14great and both teams want to play. It is turning out to be a great
1:26:14 > 1:26:21game.We will talk more about this in a second, but we are two fifths
1:26:21 > 1:26:30of the way through the women's six Nations.
1:26:39 > 1:26:47# Welcome to your life.
1:26:56 > 1:27:07# You will always sleep # You will find you being on your
1:27:07 > 1:27:15best behaviour, turn your back on mother nature
1:27:15 > 1:27:23# Everybody wants to rule the world. Here is all the extra rugby
1:27:23 > 1:27:28programmes that you can watch on the BBC, radio, iPads, whatever you want
1:27:28 > 1:27:35to do over the next few days.
1:27:47 > 1:27:54There is the week of next week. Scotland and England are back here
1:27:54 > 1:27:58in a fortnight's time. How much do Scotland want to win this match to
1:27:58 > 1:28:04set the England
1:28:05 > 1:28:10set the England match up as a firecracker. And then there is this.
1:28:10 > 1:28:16Guys, guys.
1:28:16 > 1:28:27Guys, guys. Let's get some milk.You have the softest hands.
1:28:27 > 1:28:33have the softest hands. You know what? I take my
1:28:35 > 1:28:38what? I take my coffee black.France have a 6-point lead at half-time in
1:28:38 > 1:28:43the game at Murrayfield between France and Scotland. We are
1:28:43 > 1:28:47delighted to welcome for the first time today Olivier Magne to our
1:28:47 > 1:28:51punditry panel to relive the golden days of Olivier Magne. I say golden
1:28:51 > 1:28:56because that is partly the colour of your hair in those days. These were
1:28:56 > 1:29:01the great days when France used to run all the time.About the hair, it
1:29:01 > 1:29:12was a bet I lost with my club. This trike is a great try because it came
1:29:12 > 1:29:19far from our side and many players touched the ball. It is the way we
1:29:19 > 1:29:22liked to play. We gave a lot of happiness to the people who were
1:29:22 > 1:29:31watching us play. That is why right now when you finish your career, all
1:29:31 > 1:29:35the people think about this and they thank you for everything you did
1:29:35 > 1:29:41with your French team. What was that celebration about? It was about some
1:29:41 > 1:29:48people who had said I was not the Olivier Magne of years ago. So it
1:29:48 > 1:29:51was to prove to them that I was still there and ready to play for
1:29:51 > 1:29:58the French team.We had a couple of tries like that today, which was
1:29:58 > 1:30:03fantastic. There are elements of the old France today. Can they keep that
1:30:03 > 1:30:09going for the second half?I hope so. But they have to maintain the
1:30:09 > 1:30:20rhythm like that. It is clearly a battle of ten.
1:30:20 > 1:30:26battle of ten. Between Finn Russell and Beauxis, who will win the match?
1:30:26 > 1:30:32France has a good chance and it will be very close. If this match opens
1:30:32 > 1:30:37up in a big way in the last quarter and if the French team does tire,
1:30:37 > 1:30:42which people think they will do, is this the day for Stuart Hogg and the
1:30:42 > 1:30:48other players at the back to win this match for Scotland?Yes, and it
1:30:48 > 1:30:51could be that Ali Price comes off the bench to make a difference. It
1:30:51 > 1:30:56has been a good 40 minutes from Scotland as a reaction to the last
1:30:56 > 1:31:0280 minutes in Cardiff. Now they are about to go out and make this next
1:31:02 > 1:31:0640 minutes about winning, that is what it is all about now.I think
1:31:06 > 1:31:10France would look at this and say they need to score the first points.
1:31:10 > 1:31:18They will be more than a trite ahead. Scotland will say they have
1:31:18 > 1:31:23to get on the
1:31:29 > 1:31:36COMMENTATOR: Baptiste Serin it on to replace Maxime Machenaud. Serin a
1:31:36 > 1:31:42very experienced scrum-half. Machenaud was the kicker as well for
1:31:42 > 1:31:52France. We will see what they do in that department but Serin has played
1:31:52 > 1:31:58a couple of times against Scotland before.
1:32:00 > 1:32:02before. Gilchrist hands that onto Gordon Reid and Berghan, the two
1:32:02 > 1:32:08props working hard.
1:32:08 > 1:32:15Scotland with the first chance to attack.
1:32:18 > 1:32:28McInally straight into Vahaamahina. The switch from Russell to Gray.
1:32:30 > 1:32:37Ryan Wilson doing plenty of hard work in the carrying department. So
1:32:37 > 1:32:46is Berghan. He is a big man to stop. France being told to leave it.
1:32:46 > 1:32:51Wenceslas Lauret was the culprit.
1:32:57 > 1:33:03Jonny Gray, Scotland just pondering for a moment. Again, the French fans
1:33:03 > 1:33:15inside Murrayfield making some noise as Hamish Watson goes into Camara.
1:33:15 > 1:33:18Hurled back by Vahaamahina. Scotland battering away around the ten metre
1:33:18 > 1:33:30line. Horne, around Slimani and Iturria. Camara was the end of the
1:33:30 > 1:33:40journey. Grant Gilchrist punching a side Serin. He laid it back for his
1:33:40 > 1:33:43second row partner, Jonny Gray, and now Scotland have some momentum but
1:33:43 > 1:33:48good work, I was going to say good work by France but then the penalty
1:33:48 > 1:33:56is given to Scotland. It was Baptiste Serin.Camara was locked on
1:33:56 > 1:34:02on the poacher but the reason was because Serin had stopped the
1:34:02 > 1:34:06Scottish cleaners from getting into the ruck and I think it was a bit
1:34:06 > 1:34:10lucky for Scotland. Good ball from the top of the line-out but very
1:34:10 > 1:34:13ponderous for eight or nine phases. Grant Gilchrist has carried really
1:34:13 > 1:34:18well. I don't know if he was picked for his ball carrying but he has
1:34:18 > 1:34:24done well will stop he is an aggressive ball-carrier and he will
1:34:24 > 1:34:29run honest, hard lines all day.Ben Toolis is a bit more dynamic and
1:34:29 > 1:34:35explosive, they both play for Edinburgh, but Gilchrist. He is a
1:34:35 > 1:34:41thickset lock and he has carried well.Heavier man, he was named as
1:34:41 > 1:34:45captain for Vern Cotter and then broke his arm and had a series of
1:34:45 > 1:34:50injuries but he has played well today. Greig Laidlaw with the shot
1:34:50 > 1:34:55at goal.
1:34:55 > 1:35:00He is a man who seldom misses and Scotland within three minutes of the
1:35:00 > 1:35:04second half beginning, have made a good start.Something we have seen
1:35:04 > 1:35:08from the French before, if they can hold onto the ball -- if you can
1:35:08 > 1:35:12hold onto the ball, they will give away penalties. That is an important
1:35:12 > 1:35:17three points to start the second half for Scotland. We saw them
1:35:17 > 1:35:20conceding six point straight after half-time last week and almost put
1:35:20 > 1:35:24the game beyond their reach.Much more deliberate move back to the
1:35:24 > 1:35:30halfway line to restart for France and Beauxis send it long. Ryan
1:35:30 > 1:35:37Wilson gathers and goes straight into Guirado, good strength. Laidlaw
1:35:37 > 1:35:45gives it to Berghan. He has had a good game around the park. So has
1:35:45 > 1:35:54Hamish Watson. The ball is lost but stripped back illegally. Scotland
1:35:54 > 1:35:57with the penalty and France with a couple of errors, Slimani
1:35:57 > 1:36:01complaining to no avail and a chance for Scotland to move up the field.
1:36:01 > 1:36:05It is exactly what we spoke about, I don't think any of that was
1:36:05 > 1:36:08spectacular from Scotland and I don't think France were under
1:36:08 > 1:36:14pressure...It is just a missed touch, good work by Beauxis to keep
1:36:14 > 1:36:18it in but Finn Russell has done it again. They will have to come from a
1:36:18 > 1:36:27lot deeper now. Stuart Hogg try to use his pace but there was some
1:36:27 > 1:36:30illegal blocking of French defenders. Hogg is frustrated but it
1:36:30 > 1:36:36was quite clear, the crossing, and France with a penalty.I think it
1:36:36 > 1:36:39was Ryan Wilson engaged in a contact. If he had not made any
1:36:39 > 1:36:44contact, he eventually pushed the French defender, Hogg would have
1:36:44 > 1:36:49been cables of you talk about error compounding error, muscle missing
1:36:49 > 1:36:55touch and suddenly France have a shot at goal. They have been the own
1:36:55 > 1:37:01worst enemies. Indiscipline by France and France give them a way
1:37:01 > 1:37:07out. They compound it. The missed touch and this silly penalty,
1:37:07 > 1:37:12probably a bit unlucky, France probably make a bit of a meal of it.
1:37:12 > 1:37:19But you cannot put yourself in the position to give those away.It is a
1:37:19 > 1:37:23ticking scrum-half in Baptiste Serin who has replaced Maxi Machenaud and
1:37:23 > 1:37:34he is taking this tick --
1:37:35 > 1:37:42kicking scrum-half.
1:37:45 > 1:37:49That is a fine strike from Baptiste Serin. The wind is blowing around
1:37:49 > 1:37:54Murrayfield but it does not put him off. Perfect kicking record so far
1:37:54 > 1:37:57today and a penalty apiece in the second half and France have their
1:37:57 > 1:38:03lead back to six points.
1:38:04 > 1:38:06lead back to six points. It was a pretty harsh penalty but the error
1:38:06 > 1:38:15from Finn Russell initially.Farming Nina had to do well there. He
1:38:15 > 1:38:23stretched and got it back and Wenceslas Lauret has it. Penalty
1:38:23 > 1:38:30from one side to the other and Scotland have the chance to hit
1:38:30 > 1:38:35back. -- Vahaamahina had to do well. That is something Rajitha been asked
1:38:35 > 1:38:43to look out for, tackling players beyond the ball -- referees have
1:38:43 > 1:38:50been asked to look out for. Both teams are determined to help the
1:38:50 > 1:38:55opposition as much as they can! It is the kind of place you just don't
1:38:55 > 1:38:59need to give away a penalty. France were always going to kick to exit
1:38:59 > 1:39:07and clear their lines. It is almost three metres passed the ball,
1:39:07 > 1:39:11wrapping the arms. Stuart McInally has been cleared at the ready, no
1:39:11 > 1:39:15need to follow through. He just needed to let him go, three metres
1:39:15 > 1:39:20beyond and he was still wrestling with him and the referees are very
1:39:20 > 1:39:27sharp on that now.Laidlaw looking to make it four out of four.
1:39:30 > 1:39:34Again it is good and Scotland move to 20 points. So little in this
1:39:34 > 1:39:39game.
1:39:39 > 1:39:44game. There was try scoring from both sides in the first half but in
1:39:44 > 1:39:50the second it is a couple of penalties apiece. You're looking for
1:39:50 > 1:39:53your leaders to step up, it is in the balance, both teams helping each
1:39:53 > 1:39:57other with the discipline and you need your senior players to take the
1:39:57 > 1:40:05game by the scruff of the neck. Beauxis has placed this well but
1:40:05 > 1:40:11Gilchrist clutches it from the air. Laidlaw staring down the French
1:40:11 > 1:40:21defence. Maccarinelli takes it forward. Laidlaw shapes to kick.
1:40:21 > 1:40:27Challenged in the air, fair contest, Geoffrey Palis came forward for
1:40:27 > 1:40:31France but it is back on the Scottish side and running on to add
1:40:31 > 1:40:34page is Stuart Hogg skipping his way around Lamerat and past Thomas and
1:40:34 > 1:40:44still going. Laidlaw feed it out to Russell who delays for a moment. He
1:40:44 > 1:40:52decides to set it back. Huw Jones trying to gather. He spills and
1:40:52 > 1:40:57French scrum. It is so frustrating to watch. In fairness, Brilliant
1:40:57 > 1:41:04exit from Scotland having the aerial ball and you could see Stuart Hogg,
1:41:04 > 1:41:07but Huw Jones takes his eyes off the ball ever so slightly. You could see
1:41:07 > 1:41:13Stuart Hogg was tempted to off-load once or twice but he decided to keep
1:41:13 > 1:41:17ball in hand and do the sensible thing and put France under pressure
1:41:17 > 1:41:21because if you can play in their half they will give you penalties.
1:41:21 > 1:41:25Just a shame disease Scotland putting the ball down and facing
1:41:25 > 1:41:34another scrum now.It has not been a match of too many scrums.
1:41:34 > 1:41:37match of too many scrums. The Scottish scrum stood up reasonably
1:41:37 > 1:41:43well last time. Serin ready to feed.
1:41:43 > 1:41:52Decent scrum from Scotland. Geoffrey Palis straight to Stuart Hogg. Again
1:41:52 > 1:41:59the buzz from the crowd. Onto Seymour who goes into Serin and not
1:41:59 > 1:42:07held and still going. Not any more. Scotland striker to secure it but
1:42:07 > 1:42:10good counterattacking from France, it somehow comes back. Maccarinelli
1:42:10 > 1:42:16again.
1:42:16 > 1:42:19again. Scotland with pace now. Russell and the times did well to
1:42:19 > 1:42:22Horne but a great tackle by Iturria.
1:42:25 > 1:42:29Down the blindside. Barkley and Wilson.
1:42:36 > 1:42:45Gilchrist onto Gray. Slowed down and a penalty to France. It was Iturria
1:42:45 > 1:42:50getting the applause this time. For such a big man he is very good over
1:42:50 > 1:42:55the ball, he is like a number seven. I think that might be his second
1:42:55 > 1:43:01penalty and he got a turnover as well. The really good poacher, a
1:43:01 > 1:43:05skill you normally associate with the shorter number sevens, the likes
1:43:05 > 1:43:09of Hamish Watson or Guirado is very good as well. Super play by the
1:43:09 > 1:43:17second row.Brooks is for touch and France will have the line-out. --
1:43:17 > 1:43:22Beauxis.
1:43:22 > 1:43:25Beauxis. Just a few tempers getting stretched out there.There was a
1:43:25 > 1:43:32little off the ball here, Stuart Hogg and Doumayrou. Having their own
1:43:32 > 1:43:37game on the touchline. Stuart Patterson, the physio, lends his
1:43:37 > 1:43:46weight.France with a good position and taken down well by Camara as
1:43:46 > 1:43:53they get the rolling maul going with Guirado at the back. Serin having a
1:43:53 > 1:44:02look. It gets some momentum once again. France making good ground.
1:44:02 > 1:44:09Serin with the chip for Vakatawa to chase. Comfortable enough for
1:44:09 > 1:44:19Russell.Excellent maul defence from Scotland, you could hear the referee
1:44:19 > 1:44:25shouting to the French to use it. No penalty conceded, really good
1:44:25 > 1:44:35defence.That is Bernard Laporte in the centre.
1:44:35 > 1:44:43The Scottish Rugby president on the left.Who is that walking across?
1:44:43 > 1:44:48Finn Russell getting his boot back on. It was not a bad option from the
1:44:48 > 1:44:54driving maul, the kick. Just a bit too heavy from Serin, who has been
1:44:54 > 1:45:00busy since he came on. He had a good penalty kick and he has been
1:45:00 > 1:45:03industrious in defence. Quite a slight number nine but hugely
1:45:03 > 1:45:14talented.Iturria upended but by his own man. France coming again with
1:45:14 > 1:45:24Camara.
1:45:24 > 1:45:27Camara. Wenceslas Lauret tries to set it back. It is there for France
1:45:27 > 1:45:32again.
1:45:32 > 1:45:39again. Beauxis do Camara and Palis gathers at the second attempt.
1:45:39 > 1:45:48After Iturria again. -- Arthur Iturria. The little pass to
1:45:48 > 1:45:51Vakatawa, so strong, the Fijian on the wing will
1:45:52 > 1:45:57the slide move does not work initially but Teddy Thomas was there
1:45:57 > 1:46:06to gather it up. Gilchrist clinging on for dear life! France moving
1:46:06 > 1:46:09forward well now.
1:46:12 > 1:46:20Vakatawa again. Again, the power of the wind meeting Jonny Gray. -- of
1:46:20 > 1:46:30the
1:46:30 > 1:46:38winger. Doumayrou into V-22 and he set it back well.
1:46:42 > 1:46:45The Scottish defence being sorely tested once more. Jefferson Poirot
1:46:45 > 1:46:52makes a couple of yards. It slows down for a moment and Serin looks at
1:46:52 > 1:47:03his options. The forwards in a pod. Rabah Slimani. Still therefore
1:47:03 > 1:47:13France. Advantage to France as well with Iturria once more. Still
1:47:13 > 1:47:18advantage to France and a free attack as Russell makes the tackle.
1:47:18 > 1:47:29Still playing with the penalty advantage and to within ten metres.
1:47:34 > 1:47:38The forwards still trying to make something of it. A bit of pace and
1:47:38 > 1:47:43that is Vakatawa again knocking down Russell, still holding onto the ball
1:47:43 > 1:47:49but they will now come back for the penalty. The only result really that
1:47:49 > 1:47:53Scotland could be happy with because the penalty was always there.I
1:47:53 > 1:47:59thought the advantage was over.
1:47:59 > 1:48:01thought the advantage was over. But some good attack from France on the
1:48:01 > 1:48:08right wing. I was confident Scotland could defend that series, we are
1:48:08 > 1:48:12looking at it from a pipe and France don't seem to have great shape in
1:48:12 > 1:48:15attack and Scotland look quite organised in defence. I don't think
1:48:15 > 1:48:19they need to give away those penalties. The defence is very well
1:48:19 > 1:48:25organised, not a lot of room for France to attack. The damage is in
1:48:25 > 1:48:29missed one tackles. Vakatawa was involved two or three times and he
1:48:29 > 1:48:32is dangerous around the contact. This was the penalty given away.
1:48:32 > 1:48:39Hands in the ruck. There was more concerted pressure from the French.
1:48:39 > 1:48:45I thought at one stage Beauxis would drop into the pocket to take the
1:48:45 > 1:48:49three.That is the French coaching team, Jacques Brunel at the back and
1:48:49 > 1:48:57the glasses, Sebastien Bruno as well. The Marseille is once more
1:48:57 > 1:49:04being sung. About to be made by France, Picamoles about to come on
1:49:04 > 1:49:12along with the front rows. And they will come on with a six point lead
1:49:12 > 1:49:16for France as Serin knocks it through and France Harper doesn't
1:49:16 > 1:49:21want. Changes for both teams with Scotland bringing on Ben Toolis in
1:49:21 > 1:49:28the second row and Jamie Bhatti in the front row. The French
1:49:28 > 1:49:32replacements, Louis Picamoles coming on in the back row and Eddy Ben
1:49:32 > 1:49:36Arous in the front row along with Cedate Gomes Sa. There is Ben
1:49:36 > 1:49:41Toolis. Coming on for Grant Gilchrist and Jamie Bhatti is on for
1:49:41 > 1:49:48Gordon Reid. That was Slimani going off and Marco Tauleigne who has been
1:49:48 > 1:49:52replaced by Louis Picamoles. A glimpse of Jamie Bhatti on for
1:49:52 > 1:49:57Gordon Reid.
1:49:58 > 1:50:00Gordon Reid. Straight into things, Louis Picamoles, what a man to bring
1:50:00 > 1:50:09on.
1:50:09 > 1:50:15on. What height on that from Serin, chased by Camara but taken well by
1:50:15 > 1:50:20Hogg. He lapped and plucked it from the sky and carried on by Jamie
1:50:20 > 1:50:31Bhatti. The Glasgow loosehead. Scotland flinging it wide. Huw Jones
1:50:31 > 1:50:36with good strength to get past Remi Lamerat and he has made an extra ten
1:50:36 > 1:50:40metres. Laidlaw complaining and advantage to Scotland as Eddy Ben
1:50:40 > 1:50:46Arous gets over it but it is a Scotland penalty coming. Horne takes
1:50:46 > 1:50:52it in. They know they have the advantage. There was a long
1:50:52 > 1:50:58advantage played for France last time as Maitland keeps it alive. You
1:50:58 > 1:51:03have to keep checking as a player if the advantage is still alive. That
1:51:03 > 1:51:16was Ryan Wilson. John Lacey saying it is still advantage.
1:51:16 > 1:51:23Scotland making good ground through Russell. Laidlaw down the blindside
1:51:23 > 1:51:29and Horne into the French wall. That might be the end of it but no, still
1:51:29 > 1:51:36advantage. Toolis into the 22 and they will now come back for the
1:51:36 > 1:51:44penalty.I think Scotland will be happy to take that. When you get
1:51:44 > 1:51:48into those higher numbers of phases you can struggle to attack, struggle
1:51:48 > 1:51:51for energy particularly at this stage of the game and a penalty in
1:51:51 > 1:52:01that position in the such a tight game.
1:52:01 > 1:52:04game.Just a look at Louis Picamoles and he fell out of favour in terms
1:52:04 > 1:52:09of selection with Jacques Brunel and only came in because Kevin Gourdon
1:52:09 > 1:52:14was injured but a tremendous player. He's a big impact player. I would
1:52:14 > 1:52:19not call relentless, that is the only problem. He has big moments but
1:52:19 > 1:52:24he can go missing for periods of the game. Some players might not offer
1:52:24 > 1:52:29you the big moments but they keep showing up, defensively and in
1:52:29 > 1:52:34attack.Greig Laidlaw's last three kicks have been pretty much from
1:52:34 > 1:52:40this position as we head into the final quarter of the match. And the
1:52:40 > 1:52:46game is still so close, three points in it going into the final quarter.
1:52:46 > 1:52:52John Lacey was quite clear speaking to the French, telling them to let
1:52:52 > 1:52:57go of the ball. And that was good because even in that phase, Scotland
1:52:57 > 1:53:01were able to attack much better and fluently when the ball was quick and
1:53:01 > 1:53:05it's definitely suits them and the French know it. They will put
1:53:05 > 1:53:10pressure on the breakdown but it has to be legal. What a 20 minutes we
1:53:10 > 1:53:15have, who has the deeper squad and the greater fitness? Ryan Wilson
1:53:15 > 1:53:20carrying in the restart. Both teams are so desperate for a victory.
1:53:20 > 1:53:27France with no win in seven. Scotland off the back of that heavy
1:53:27 > 1:53:32defeat in Cardiff. Picamoles now full speed ahead.
1:53:40 > 1:53:46Vakatawa once more. Not taken down at the first attempt and into Hamish
1:53:46 > 1:53:54Watson he goes and Watson wins 1-0. But still with France and seven, a
1:53:54 > 1:54:00little blind pass and risky, through the feet of Picamoles but a hand in
1:54:00 > 1:54:04there as well. That was risky from France and it give Scotland the
1:54:04 > 1:54:09scrum right in the centre of the field. We want to see France playing
1:54:09 > 1:54:13that kind of rugby, off-loading, but they will give you opportunities.
1:54:13 > 1:54:18They can give away penalties and throw silly off-loads and put each
1:54:18 > 1:54:22other under pressure. If Scotland can remain disciplined when they get
1:54:22 > 1:54:27the ball...The good thing about that from Scotland, the defence kept
1:54:27 > 1:54:32coming up on the outside. Sometimes you can set off on the outside and
1:54:32 > 1:54:37the ball does not get put under pressure further out. That was hard
1:54:37 > 1:54:42for Picamoles to pick up.Three different men in the front rows, two
1:54:42 > 1:54:46are different props for France and one for Scotland, Jamie Bhatti on
1:54:46 > 1:54:50the loosehead so how will that change the dynamic of the scrum?
1:54:50 > 1:54:56Pretty even so far. Scotland just moving forward a little bit and they
1:54:56 > 1:55:01have the penalty so a free attack. Laidlaw but it refer the chase but
1:55:01 > 1:55:08they will come back for the penalty. A lot of these French props got
1:55:08 > 1:55:12their first caps last week, Gomes Sa against Ireland, they are big men
1:55:12 > 1:55:17and powerful scrummagers but that was a massive penalty for Scotland.
1:55:17 > 1:55:22It will be a shot at goal, a little further out but right in the centre
1:55:22 > 1:55:27of the field again and a chance for Scotland to draw level. Such a tense
1:55:27 > 1:55:34match now. You have all the free entertaining stuff in the first half
1:55:34 > 1:55:39and then people realise it matters quite a bit!It almost looks like a
1:55:39 > 1:55:42first half and then the second half and it is down to the pressure,
1:55:42 > 1:55:48Scotland needing to win after last week and France only winning five
1:55:48 > 1:55:53out of their last 20 with 14 losses and a draw. The nerves and pressure,
1:55:53 > 1:55:57especially in the condensed format of the Six Nations, kicked in at
1:55:57 > 1:56:02this state and it is the championship minutes.
1:56:02 > 1:56:07-- at this stage. The penalty count is going against France now. Let's
1:56:07 > 1:56:15see if Scotland can capitalise. He rarely fails and Laidlaw brings
1:56:15 > 1:56:19Scotland level. 16 minutes to go at Murrayfield and nothing in it
1:56:19 > 1:56:24between Scotland and France.You feel Scotland have a great
1:56:24 > 1:56:30opportunity, they just had to be solid, their set piece as to be
1:56:30 > 1:56:33solid, scrum and line-out, when they are in their own half they have to
1:56:33 > 1:56:37get out sensibly and not play the ball too much. France will give them
1:56:37 > 1:56:40opportunities. If they can get the ball and the French half, France
1:56:40 > 1:56:45will give them penalties and turnovers.Finn Russell and John
1:56:45 > 1:56:49Barclay coming off so I imagine Pete Horne is going to fly half. Ali
1:56:49 > 1:56:59Price is on. Laidlaw can play fly half. A knock-on from Linard
1:56:59 > 1:57:08Beauxis! The frustration and a howl into the Murrayfield evening. His
1:57:08 > 1:57:15mistake met by a roar from himself and the Murrayfield crowd. He knows,
1:57:15 > 1:57:20doesn't he? Never nice to see anyone. He has played well. He has
1:57:20 > 1:57:24put a different game to what you would imagine but that was a basic
1:57:24 > 1:57:28error and pressure building again in the last quarter.Talking about the
1:57:28 > 1:57:32change of fly half 11 of Greig Laidlaw's first 13 caps came at fly
1:57:32 > 1:57:41half.He gives a lot of control. Maybe a note about what Paul said,
1:57:41 > 1:57:43getting to territory and winning penalties and converting them and
1:57:43 > 1:57:49applying pressure.
1:57:49 > 1:57:51applying pressure.Secure from the scrum and Price feeds onto Horne
1:57:51 > 1:57:58full sub Hogg of the outside of the boot. The mark is called by
1:57:58 > 1:58:02Doumayrou and that's not the right option as Doumayrou comes away with
1:58:02 > 1:58:11possession given up by Scotland. Serin De Gendt looking to feedback
1:58:11 > 1:58:17but under pressure and Beauxis slips it away! Palis get it away but only
1:58:17 > 1:58:24to Ryan Wilson. France now beginning to unravel a little bit. Price
1:58:24 > 1:58:31looking for it and feeding it onto Toolis. Driving forward on the back
1:58:31 > 1:58:36of a wave of noise and Denton is on the field as well carrying Scotland
1:58:36 > 1:58:41to within 15 metres. Crash ball again and it is Jones but France
1:58:41 > 1:58:46read it this time and bring him down. Carried in by Maccarinelli
1:58:46 > 1:58:49this time, France trying to hold it up and they might have done well
1:58:49 > 1:58:56here. France I think we'll get the scrum and they do, good work by the
1:58:56 > 1:59:01French defence. The French turned that tackle into a more so they
1:59:01 > 1:59:07don't have to release when it goes to ground -- into a maul. Scotland
1:59:07 > 1:59:11do not have do pull a rabbit out of the hat, France are doing to do it
1:59:11 > 1:59:17for them. One of the things you spoke about before the game, this
1:59:17 > 1:59:21was good, disciplined pressure on their exit. You're got to giggle,
1:59:21 > 1:59:27his previous touch was a knock-on and then he juggled the first one
1:59:27 > 1:59:33and thought, I wanted to throw it out the back door.Take it easy,
1:59:33 > 1:59:41Lionel! The crowd are enjoying it and the game is tied up with 13
1:59:41 > 1:59:46minutes to go, great drama at Murrayfield. One thing to worry
1:59:46 > 1:59:49about for Scotland was the scrum but beats of situations, it has been
1:59:49 > 1:59:58good all day but they have worked in their favour -- the substitutions.
1:59:58 > 2:00:02They don't need to give away penalties, just disciplined exit
2:00:02 > 2:00:09pressure.Dave Denton came on rather unannounced, back in a team for the
2:00:09 > 2:00:13first time in a couple of years and he made a big hit on Serin feeding
2:00:13 > 2:00:18it back which led to the mistake from Beauxis and Denton brings a
2:00:18 > 2:00:22certain amount of dynamism and power. And a big carrier as well,
2:00:22 > 2:00:26especially at tired French defenders who might get loose. With Gilchrist
2:00:26 > 2:00:30off he is a good addition to carry the ball.It is French ball about
2:00:30 > 2:00:41six or seven metres from the own line. Serin with the feed.
2:00:41 > 2:00:48He has bought an extra five or six yards for the clearing kick. He does
2:00:48 > 2:00:57have a big boot. That is a wonderful clearing kick from Lionel Beauxis.I
2:00:57 > 2:01:02thought the French may be went off their feet there, but that is on his
2:01:02 > 2:01:06own goal line under all sorts of pressure.Quickly taken and Scotland
2:01:06 > 2:01:11have done the right thing by not giving France time. France are
2:01:11 > 2:01:13looking to slow things down now.
2:01:25 > 2:01:33Scotland getting back to where they were.
2:01:37 > 2:01:41Go through the phases and perhaps wait for something to be given to
2:01:41 > 2:01:46you.
2:01:47 > 2:01:51Huw Jones away again. Again driving into the 22.
2:01:57 > 2:02:00The French players are breathing hard in defence now and Scotland is
2:02:00 > 2:02:03trying to get that ball back.
2:02:08 > 2:02:16Some width on it now for Scotland. Advantage says John Lacey. A penalty
2:02:16 > 2:02:21is coming for Scotland. They want more than three points now. They
2:02:21 > 2:02:28will take the penalty, but they are getting closer.
2:02:28 > 2:02:34getting closer. They will come back for that penalty. It is pressure
2:02:34 > 2:02:39building, Paul, from the Scots. It almost looks as if the French are
2:02:39 > 2:02:43playing and defending as individuals. They have got huge
2:02:43 > 2:02:46commitment and character but they are not working within the
2:02:46 > 2:02:52structure.One thing you do not want to show is weakness. There are a lot
2:02:52 > 2:02:57of French players with their hands on their knees, bent over, not
2:02:57 > 2:03:02talking to each other and encouraging each other. I know I am
2:03:02 > 2:03:06banging the same drum, but they will give you opportunities. This is the
2:03:06 > 2:03:10line-out that Scotland has been doing. They play it as quick as they
2:03:10 > 2:03:15can and it is a simple play. Peter Horne just puts his head down and
2:03:15 > 2:03:25goes.That was the offside. They gave away the penalty. Ten minutes
2:03:25 > 2:03:30to go and Gregor Townsend still busying himself. But Greg Laidlaw
2:03:30 > 2:03:34has a chance to move Scotland in France for the first time in this
2:03:34 > 2:03:40match.
2:03:46 > 2:03:52It was not an easy one but it goes through and Scotland are in front.
2:03:52 > 2:03:58It has taken them 70 minutes, but they lead. The French are going to
2:03:58 > 2:04:04give you opportunities and penalties. He is now seven out of
2:04:04 > 2:04:09seven and that is massive for team. You wonder with Finn Russell
2:04:09 > 2:04:14kicking, you wonder if Greg Laidlaw had taken over, that he is so
2:04:14 > 2:04:25reliable. A change at fly-half for France.
2:04:37 > 2:04:51Vahaamahina has been replaced. There was nobody there to take it.
2:04:51 > 2:05:00was nobody there to take it. France looking to build a position.
2:05:06 > 2:05:11There was a spill and it went forward. Yes, says the referee, but
2:05:11 > 2:05:17Scotland have it anyway. A scrum advantage. He sees Stuart Hogg
2:05:17 > 2:05:23wandering around and no advantage there.Good defence from Scotland.
2:05:23 > 2:05:36They keep coming forward. That was a bad pass by Fall.Stuart Hogg did
2:05:36 > 2:05:40not want to kick, but as soon as you kick, you kick away your scrum
2:05:40 > 2:05:48advantage. Quite sensible play there as well. You do not want to invite
2:05:48 > 2:05:54any counterattack opportunity, especially from the French.Clever
2:05:54 > 2:06:02play from Stuart Hogg to not lose the advantage for the team.
2:06:11 > 2:06:16The clock ticks away, but Scotland are not safe yet. But they have the
2:06:16 > 2:06:24momentum. Again a lot of different personnel in the scrum. France would
2:06:24 > 2:06:27have expected to have the edge in this gram, but they have not had
2:06:27 > 2:06:32that today, it has been pretty even.
2:06:38 > 2:06:48In the scrum.
2:07:18 > 2:07:24The France defence keeping Scotland back. But again it was an illegal
2:07:24 > 2:07:29manoeuvre from France and a penalty to Scotland. France are making bit
2:07:29 > 2:07:34easier Scotland now.It is a sensible attack well managed, not
2:07:34 > 2:07:39trying to much, keeping it fairly close in the wide channels as well.
2:07:39 > 2:07:45It is a mature end to the game for Scotland.I am sure Gregor Townsend
2:07:45 > 2:07:50would love them to be playing more freely and openly, but sometimes you
2:07:50 > 2:07:55have to just take the obvious opportunities the opposition are
2:07:55 > 2:08:02giving it. A super kick from Stuart Hogg.It is deep inside the French
2:08:02 > 2:08:0622 and now you start to think of the minutes to go rather than the
2:08:06 > 2:08:11minutes passed. Scotland can take a big step towards victory here if
2:08:11 > 2:08:16they can find another score. France has conceded seven penalties.
2:08:22 > 2:08:33That went to Ben Toolis. It is held by Stuart McInally, the hooker, and
2:08:33 > 2:08:39Scotland are beginning to creep forward. With every inch gained, the
2:08:39 > 2:08:45noise will grow inside Murrayfield. The referee is telling them to use
2:08:45 > 2:08:57it. A penalty advantage to Scotland. No time for the advantage. You can
2:08:57 > 2:09:02see it was difficult for him to get out of there. To put yourself in
2:09:02 > 2:09:08there in the first place and you put yourself at risk of the penalty.
2:09:08 > 2:09:12Denton has got involved in absolutely everything. A
2:09:12 > 2:09:16conversation between Greg Laidlaw and Stuart Hogg. There is no other
2:09:16 > 2:09:22decision than to take the opportunity to kick for three. What
2:09:22 > 2:09:27you spoke about in the first half, Paul, was working a bit harder in
2:09:27 > 2:09:30contact on the ground so the French players could not get in and over
2:09:30 > 2:09:37the ball.Sometimes you can be isolated. But sometimes you have to
2:09:37 > 2:09:42find a solution and buy some time. It was also good play by Denton
2:09:42 > 2:09:46because the malt got a bit messy and the referee asked them to use it and
2:09:46 > 2:09:51they were in danger of getting turned over, so Denton took off from
2:09:51 > 2:09:58the back. Ideally you would love to get the penalty off the malt, but at
2:09:58 > 2:10:03least you still have the ball from five or six metres.Once again, all
2:10:03 > 2:10:10eyes turned towards Greg Laidlaw.
2:10:11 > 2:10:17All those tries in the first half, four, and it has all been penalties
2:10:17 > 2:10:25in the second half. Now Scotland lead at Murrayfield. It has been a
2:10:25 > 2:10:29nervous second half, but Scotland settled down into it. They figured
2:10:29 > 2:10:39out France would give them plenty of opportunities.
2:10:39 > 2:10:42opportunities.That was like a sevens restart, hanging on the ten
2:10:42 > 2:10:47metre line.
2:10:56 > 2:11:04That was a wonderful take a full-back and stumble.
2:11:07 > 2:11:12Three minutes to go, and still an opportunity for France, no doubt
2:11:12 > 2:11:17about that.
2:11:17 > 2:11:27about that. The penalty was there. France have the advantage, knowing
2:11:27 > 2:11:30they might be putting this into the corner.
2:11:38 > 2:11:43They will come back for it. Just over two minutes remaining and six
2:11:43 > 2:11:49points the difference and an opportunity for Belleau to put it
2:11:49 > 2:11:57into the corner. Some poor tackling technique put Denton on the wrong
2:11:57 > 2:12:03side. He did everything he could to get out of it.A lot still to
2:12:03 > 2:12:12decide, but the man of the match is? To be honest it is Greg Laidlaw. He
2:12:12 > 2:12:18has won 600 points for his country. He has taken over the captaincy, he
2:12:18 > 2:12:25has controlled the team. Thomas had two outstanding tries, but the man
2:12:25 > 2:12:33of the match is Greg Laidlaw.
2:12:34 > 2:12:41Brought down by the blues, so no penalty and Scotland have the scrum.
2:12:41 > 2:12:46Good defensive work by the home side. Just a minute to go to see out
2:12:46 > 2:12:52victory over France.France had to win it at the front, it is probably
2:12:52 > 2:12:59the easiest ball in terms of defence to win.
2:12:59 > 2:13:06to win. Stuart McInally does a great job. He stopped the malt. An
2:13:06 > 2:13:14absolutely huge moment. You have to have courage as well. All the
2:13:14 > 2:13:19technical stuff, but you know it is about working hard.It is making
2:13:19 > 2:13:23them win the ball at the front and then it is mindset, putting your
2:13:23 > 2:13:30head down and working hard. Now Scotland will try to seek out this
2:13:30 > 2:13:35clock. France are desperate for a win in their wilderness today. For a
2:13:35 > 2:13:40long time it looked as if they might. France has to put everything
2:13:40 > 2:13:45into this scrum to challenge the Scottish ball. Ali Price. Scotland
2:13:45 > 2:13:51crumble. The ball is out and picked up by Ryan Wilson. Seconds
2:13:51 > 2:14:01remaining. They cannot yet kick it out. France try and turn it over. A
2:14:01 > 2:14:09penalty to Scotland and the win will be bears. The clock goes red. It is
2:14:09 > 2:14:14time to see it out says Greg Laidlaw. The fans are already
2:14:14 > 2:14:24celebrating.They have to tap the ball first before they kick it out.
2:14:24 > 2:14:31No need for the line-out. The victory goes to Scotland. It was
2:14:31 > 2:14:35entertaining with some tries in the first half, but in the second half
2:14:35 > 2:14:39this was a win of character for Scotland to come back after that
2:14:39 > 2:14:44something in Cardiff and they have their first win in the six Nations.
2:14:44 > 2:14:47An excellent win. It was almost back to front with all the glamour in the
2:14:47 > 2:14:55first half. But Greg Laidlaw got all the penalties in the second half.
2:14:55 > 2:15:01Scotland have answered all the questions asked of them after the
2:15:01 > 2:15:06defeat in Cardiff. Both teams were their worst enemy at times, but
2:15:06 > 2:15:13Scotland were the wiser team.
2:15:13 > 2:15:17They just played penalty rugby and let France shoot themselves in the
2:15:17 > 2:15:21foot and that is a really big win. To come back from where they were
2:15:21 > 2:15:29last week, that is a really big win. France lead at half-time, but
2:15:29 > 2:15:35Scotland lead at full-time and they win by 32-26.
2:15:35 > 2:15:39Wiser and smarter and only the third time that Scotland have ever beaten
2:15:39 > 2:15:45France in the six Nations. Andy Nichol, all is well that ends well.
2:15:45 > 2:15:50Absolutely, it was the reaction to last week's game in Cardiff. There
2:15:50 > 2:15:54is a lot to work on, but that is so important for the development of
2:15:54 > 2:15:59this team to get that point immediately after all the
2:15:59 > 2:16:03allegations last week. And the man of the match not surprisingly is
2:16:03 > 2:16:09down on the pitch. Read Laidlaw, what a great win for
2:16:09 > 2:16:14Scotland. It was tight at times, particularly after the first half.
2:16:14 > 2:16:21We knew it was going to be tight. Sum up the emotions. It is hard to
2:16:21 > 2:16:26describe, it is unbelievable. It was not pretty at times, but that is
2:16:26 > 2:16:32rugby. You have got to respect the French, it was an incredibly tight
2:16:32 > 2:16:36match. I am proud of the whole team and they dug in deep in the end and
2:16:36 > 2:16:42the forward pack were great in particular. Was there more passion
2:16:42 > 2:16:46today after such a long lay-off. It was against France where you got
2:16:46 > 2:16:50injured last year. This is your first start, it is hard to believe
2:16:50 > 2:16:56it.I am not great that watching it to be honest. I am sure my wife will
2:16:56 > 2:17:00tell you that. It is great to get back on the pitch playing in this
2:17:00 > 2:17:09jersey in front of these people.
2:17:09 > 2:17:11jersey in front of these people. Ali came on and speeded the game up and
2:17:11 > 2:17:18we closed it out.England next. How do you feel about that?It has been
2:17:18 > 2:17:22a few years since we turned them over, so hopefully we can this time.
2:17:22 > 2:17:30You are the man of the match.Let's bring in the vice captain. That was
2:17:30 > 2:17:34a great performance, but it was so tight throughout the whole match.
2:17:34 > 2:17:41Yes, we made it hard. We got off to a poor start. At half-time we were
2:17:41 > 2:17:46six points down, but we were still excited and we knew if we kept the
2:17:46 > 2:17:50ball we would cause them problems. Every time they got the ball in the
2:17:50 > 2:17:55second half, we came away with points. We were more accurate than
2:17:55 > 2:17:59last week, that we are still not there. How much pressure was there
2:17:59 > 2:18:06on this side after last week? There are only five games and if you lose
2:18:06 > 2:18:11your first one and you are serious about doing something in the
2:18:11 > 2:18:15competition, the maths is simple. We knew we had to put together a good
2:18:15 > 2:18:19performance after last week. We get a week off now and we can build
2:18:19 > 2:18:25towards England. You must be pleased that these were well worked,
2:18:25 > 2:18:29patient, team tries. That is what we have been doing in the last 18
2:18:29 > 2:18:34months, holding onto the ball, making sure the team works hard,
2:18:34 > 2:18:37that is how we train. It did not come off in Wales, but it has come
2:18:37 > 2:18:46off today.Well done. Thank you very much. As dusk descends, this is how
2:18:46 > 2:18:53it looks at the end of the second round.
2:18:59 > 2:19:04France play Italy the next time around in Marseille. Let's get a
2:19:04 > 2:19:09French perspective on this. How disappointed are you after the hope
2:19:09 > 2:19:18of half-time?I am disappointed a lot. I was very excited after the
2:19:18 > 2:19:23first half. I thought the French team would be able to maintain the
2:19:23 > 2:19:36speed and the tempo to match in the second half. Of course,
2:19:36 > 2:19:38second half. Of course, the top team is not prepared to play at that
2:19:38 > 2:19:42tempo. We can play 40 minutes at a good level, but the second half was
2:19:42 > 2:19:49too difficult for us. We were very tired and it gave the Scottish team
2:19:49 > 2:19:55a lot of penalties. In these conditions it was not possible to
2:19:55 > 2:20:00win this match.John Barclay is about to receive the Auld Alliance
2:20:00 > 2:20:08Trophy. It is the first time that has been played for. It is being
2:20:08 > 2:20:13contested for the first time to mark the 52 French and Scottish
2:20:13 > 2:20:17internationals who died in action during the First World War and the
2:20:17 > 2:20:22two captains of the last match before the conflict, Eric Milroy and
2:20:22 > 2:20:28Marcel Bergin, I named on that trophy. It is a lovely, poignant and
2:20:28 > 2:20:33tragic story about Eric Milroy. His mother hated them playing rugby and
2:20:33 > 2:20:37told him to look after himself and hang around at the back and not get
2:20:37 > 2:20:42involved in trouble. In his last letter home before he died in the
2:20:42 > 2:20:46song he wrote, we are in some slight trouble tomorrow, mother, I am
2:20:46 > 2:20:51warning you, there will be no keeping back. That was his last
2:20:51 > 2:20:59letter home. His name is on that trophy that John Barclay is
2:20:59 > 2:21:01carrying. It is interesting when we talk about French rugby and Olivier
2:21:01 > 2:21:08was talking about it just now. Playing at this level and this
2:21:08 > 2:21:16intensity, we mentioned that France 253 tackles last against Ireland.
2:21:16 > 2:21:20Today they had a relentless surge of Scottish players coming towards
2:21:20 > 2:21:24them. How do you not give away penalties because mentally and
2:21:24 > 2:21:30physically you are getting tired? Sam? It is hard because Scotland
2:21:30 > 2:21:36came out in the second half. When you are in the attacking team, you
2:21:36 > 2:21:41want to play against a team that is tired. If you have a quick first
2:21:41 > 2:21:46half, the second half does not have to be that quick. Then you might hit
2:21:46 > 2:21:5060 minutes and you might crash. The first half took its toll on the
2:21:50 > 2:21:55French boys and that is where they gave away penalties. This is an
2:21:55 > 2:22:02example of how penalties win test matches. In the Six Nations you kick
2:22:02 > 2:22:07three points and you win three games and Greg Laidlaw kicked six in a
2:22:07 > 2:22:11row. Every time they went near the French 22, they came back with
2:22:11 > 2:22:19points.It was not one fence, they were all different offences, taking
2:22:19 > 2:22:24the defender out way past the contact, there was a variety and it
2:22:24 > 2:22:28was that discipline. It was a momentum that Scotland were able to
2:22:28 > 2:22:35create in the last 15 minutes. Exactly that. At 65 minutes with
2:22:35 > 2:22:43Greg Laidlaw, he kicked it straight at France and Beauxis missed it and
2:22:43 > 2:22:47kicked it on. That was the turning point for me. From then on Scotland
2:22:47 > 2:22:52played with a lot more energy and they saw the game out. That was the
2:22:52 > 2:22:57turning point for me.What do we make generally about Greg Laidlaw
2:22:57 > 2:23:03being moved to number ten. Is that a massive snub to Finn Russell? It is,
2:23:03 > 2:23:08but I think it is a brave call by Gregor Townsend. Looking at Greg
2:23:08 > 2:23:12Laidlaw's interview I am not sure how prepared that was. He said it
2:23:12 > 2:23:18was a real surprise. That was a big call. Finn Russell will come
2:23:18 > 2:23:22bouncing back, he has got a brilliant temperament. You get
2:23:22 > 2:23:28setbacks playing in that position. But I thought Greg Laidlaw and Peter
2:23:28 > 2:23:32Horne were outstanding today. They delivered. How much was that
2:23:32 > 2:23:36decision based on this match in the end and the last 50 minutes was
2:23:36 > 2:23:40about winning and that was all that mattered? That is what it was all
2:23:40 > 2:23:45about. Six Nations is all about winning, you do not get points for
2:23:45 > 2:23:52playing with flair. It is all about winning and Scotland did that today.
2:23:52 > 2:23:57I think we are going to hear from a happy man, Gregor Townsend.
2:23:57 > 2:24:03You are very happy man, aren't you? Happier than last week. What pleased
2:24:03 > 2:24:08you most about the performance? The resilience, the effort it takes to
2:24:08 > 2:24:12win a test match is huge. When you have to do it after being behind
2:24:12 > 2:24:17most of the game that shows the character in squad. Parts of the
2:24:17 > 2:24:21game were not working for us in the first half, a credit to France for
2:24:21 > 2:24:25that. We improved those areas and we were more direct and we got our
2:24:25 > 2:24:31rewards.I said to John Barclay that it was interesting to see it was not
2:24:31 > 2:24:36just one person scoring tries, it was very much team efforts. Is that
2:24:36 > 2:24:41something you have been working on? It is nice to score a try, but we
2:24:41 > 2:24:47were up against a very good defence and it takes a huge effort. In
2:24:47 > 2:24:51amongst great defensive pressure as well, France were excellent at the
2:24:51 > 2:24:55breakdown. They did go off their feet, and they were penalised, but
2:24:55 > 2:25:01the willingness of all the carriers in the team to get involved, Stuart
2:25:01 > 2:25:04Hogg, and then you have got the forwards who had a massive game at
2:25:04 > 2:25:08set pieces and did very well. They were willing carriers right to the
2:25:08 > 2:25:14end of the game.At which point did the plan to move Greg Laidlaw at ten
2:25:14 > 2:25:19happen? He sounded surprised? It was mentioned during the week and he ran
2:25:19 > 2:25:27a couple of plays dead this morning. It was really seeing how he was. Ali
2:25:27 > 2:25:32brings so much from the bench I thought he would have the pace and
2:25:32 > 2:25:36Greg's kicking was good. Keeping him on and getting Ali onto the ball was
2:25:36 > 2:25:44positive for the team.Does that give you some pleasant headaches
2:25:44 > 2:25:49before the English match how Ali played and how Greg played? They
2:25:49 > 2:25:53were much better this week and I thought France was a very good team.
2:25:53 > 2:25:57They would trouble any side in the world and to get back into the game
2:25:57 > 2:26:00and to be much more accurate than we were last week was very pleasing.
2:26:00 > 2:26:07Well done. You can get all the penalties in the
2:26:07 > 2:26:10world, but you still have to kick them and Greg Laidlaw has been
2:26:10 > 2:26:16metronomic over the years. Not a lot of them were straightforward. He has
2:26:16 > 2:26:21done it so often for so many years and it is the confidence. The team
2:26:21 > 2:26:26knew, the fans knew, I knew, when he stepped up he was always going to
2:26:26 > 2:26:31knock them over. These are the ones you expect an international kicker
2:26:31 > 2:26:35to get over. But when the game is in the last few minutes and you are
2:26:35 > 2:26:38three points down and you are chipping away, you have still got to
2:26:38 > 2:26:43execute.From a Welsh perspective when we come to Murrayfield we say
2:26:43 > 2:26:48we cannot give away penalties in our hearts when Greg Laidlaw is playing
2:26:48 > 2:26:53because he will convert them. That is what France did not do. Greg
2:26:53 > 2:26:59Laidlaw is a very high percentage kicker in international rugby.With
2:26:59 > 2:27:02Leigh Halfpenny playing behind you, you know if you get a penalty, you
2:27:02 > 2:27:08have a chance of getting it over. But last week against Ireland if
2:27:08 > 2:27:11that simple penalty had been kicked with three minutes to go, France
2:27:11 > 2:27:16would have won the match. We did very well and the first ten minutes
2:27:16 > 2:27:23was awesome. But the second half was terrible. This is the difference.
2:27:23 > 2:27:27When you give the opposite team too many penalties at the beginning of
2:27:27 > 2:27:33the match you give them confidence and you lose it. Honestly, again,
2:27:33 > 2:27:41the players gave their best, but it is not enough. You need more
2:27:41 > 2:27:46discipline throughout the match. After last week, and narrow defeat,
2:27:46 > 2:27:51and today and narrow defeat, are you encourage a little bit that the
2:27:51 > 2:27:56French national team is going in the right direction or not?We have to
2:27:56 > 2:28:04have a mix of both matches. We have the commitment last week, but we
2:28:04 > 2:28:12need to be more clever. At times we do not need to give away too many
2:28:12 > 2:28:18penalties. Hopefully next week I hope we will realise and have a good
2:28:18 > 2:28:22game against Italy in Marseille and it is a good opportunity to get
2:28:22 > 2:28:27confidence and to mix all of this. You have asked me that question for
2:28:27 > 2:28:31many years about Scotland when you are on that losing streak. France
2:28:31 > 2:28:37have Italy in two weeks' time. You expect them to win and they will
2:28:37 > 2:28:43start to build from that.Who plays scrum half for Scotland against
2:28:43 > 2:28:48England?Greg Laidlaw. Ali Price came on and did what he was always
2:28:48 > 2:28:52going to do, generate pace, just when they needed it. Denton came off
2:28:52 > 2:28:58the bench and made a real impact. Read Laidlaw, 22 points, he
2:28:58 > 2:29:02controlled everything from both nine and ten. He is back to being very
2:29:02 > 2:29:07important again for Scotland.Sam, you were at Twickenham yesterday and
2:29:07 > 2:29:12you have been here today. How would you assess the key battle areas for
2:29:12 > 2:29:18Scotland and England in a fortnight? If I was Scotland, it will be one of
2:29:18 > 2:29:22the best chances they have to beat England in quite some time. People
2:29:22 > 2:29:28were talking doom and gloom about Scotland going into this game. But
2:29:28 > 2:29:34beating France, certainly if you get a good win against England next
2:29:34 > 2:29:38week, the championship is on. John Barclay said in his BBC column that
2:29:38 > 2:29:43Wales lost their first game in 2013 against Ireland and we played poorly
2:29:43 > 2:29:46and we came back to win the championship. Just because you lose
2:29:46 > 2:29:52the first game that does not mean you are down and out. Scotland can
2:29:52 > 2:29:56dust themselves off and get ready for England and if they can win
2:29:56 > 2:30:01that, the championship is open.In practical terms from what you saw at
2:30:01 > 2:30:06Twickenham, how does Scotland target England? You have got to take
2:30:06 > 2:30:10penalties and that is why Greg Laidlaw is important. Six Nations is
2:30:10 > 2:30:14different when you play in the southern hemisphere, and the games
2:30:14 > 2:30:21are often won by three points. When they are offered three, six, nine,
2:30:21 > 2:30:2612, get the scoreboard ticking over. Scotland played better set pieces
2:30:26 > 2:30:31today and that allowed them to come into the game more. If you have a
2:30:31 > 2:30:35strong set piece and you can do well at kicking, and there is room for
2:30:35 > 2:30:41improvement for Scotland, then they have a great dad.Scotland like play
2:30:41 > 2:30:46at Murrayfield and the game is here at Murrayfield in two weeks' time.
2:30:46 > 2:30:51It has been a great day at Murrayfield, thank you very much.
2:30:51 > 2:30:55Sam, in general terms, after the first two weekends, which is the
2:30:55 > 2:31:02best team at the moment?Crikey, good question. That is a brilliant
2:31:02 > 2:31:08question, you have got me. A bit like France, I think France played
2:31:08 > 2:31:13well in practice, so there is plenty for France to be optimistic about.
2:31:13 > 2:31:19Thinking about it Ireland have been the most clinical.Maybe Ireland
2:31:19 > 2:31:24just sneak it. Thank you to one and all. It has been absolutely bitter
2:31:24 > 2:31:29here, but it has been a great game especially from a Scottish
2:31:29 > 2:31:34perspective. In two weeks' time it is Scotland versus England. Need I
2:31:34 > 2:31:45say more?France is doing it once more. Thomas, deja vu. And it is
2:31:45 > 2:31:52Maitland for the try. And it bounces for Teddy Thomas. Try number two for
2:31:52 > 2:32:01France. And Huw Jones goes through the gap under the post.
